D1: Chengdu - Yibin
We departed at 2:00 PM and arrived in Yibin around 6:00 PM. We stayed at a business hotel in Yibin. The journey was 330 kilometers. The road was in good condition, all on the highway.
D2: Yibin - Shuifu - Zhaotong - Huize - Kunming
We departed at 8:00 AM and arrived in Kunming around 6:30 PM, where we stayed overnight. The 570-kilometer journey was generally good. The section from Yibin to Shuifu to Maliuwan was all expressway, with good conditions. The section from Maliuwan to Zhaotong was a provincial highway, requiring us to cross the Five Peaks. The mountains were foggy, and the road above the Five Peaks was full of potholes and ice, making it poor. A section from Zhaotong to Kunming was still a provincial highway, with the rest being expressway, and generally good conditions.
Day 3: Kunming - Anning - Chuxiong - Dali - Baoshan - Longling - Luxi (Mangshi) - Ruili
We departed at 9:00 AM and arrived in Ruili around midnight. We stayed overnight there, covering a total of 730 kilometers. The road conditions were good: the route from Kunming to Anning, Chuxiong, Dali, Baoshan, and Longling was all expressway, with good conditions; the route from Longling to Luxi (Mangshi) and Ruili was a winding provincial road, with average conditions.
D4: Ruili - Tengchong
We joined a local tour group for 300 yuan per person for a one-day trip to the China-Myanmar border. We departed at 4:30 PM. Due to our inexperience and our reliance on the GPS, we took a long, abandoned mountain road and arrived in Tengchong around 1:30 AM. We stayed at a hot spring hotel in the suburbs of Tengchong. The route from Ruili to Luxi (Mangshi) to Longling was a winding provincial road with average road conditions. The route from Longling to Tengchong was a combination of a provincial road, a winding gravel road (suspected to be the original Stilwell Road), and a provincial road, and was in particularly poor condition. Tip: A local Tengchong guide later suggested that the route from Ruili to Tengchong should be Ruili-Longchuan-Yingjiang-Lianghe-Tengchong. While the distance might appear to be significantly longer, this route is entirely on provincial roads, and the road conditions are much better than our previous route, taking only about three hours.
D5: Stay at a hot spring hotel in the suburbs of Tengchong
Charter a car to visit the Volcano Geological Park - Western Yunnan Anti-Japanese War Memorial Hall (Tengchong City) - Heshun Ancient Town. The chartered car is a business car and payment is made after the tour. The chartered car fee is about 500 to 600 yuan.
D6: Tengchong - Baoshan - Dali - Chuxiong - Kunming
Departing at 8:00 AM, arriving in Kunming at 10:00 PM, we stayed overnight in Kunming, covering a total of 650 kilometers. The Tengchong-Hangzhou-Ruili Expressway (Longling-Baoshan section) is a winding provincial road with average road conditions. The entire expressway route, via the Hangzhou-Ruili Expressway, continues to Baoshan, Dali, Chuxiong, and Kunming, all in good condition. We exited the expressway at Dali (Xiaguan) and stopped on Binhai Avenue for lunch and a view of Erhai Lake, staying for 2-3 hours.
D7: Kunming - Yibin - Chengdu
We returned by the same route, departing at 9:00 AM. We encountered a traffic accident and were stuck in traffic for nearly four hours, arriving in Yibin at 9:30 PM. We split into two groups: one stayed in Yibin and returned to Chengdu the next day, while the other arrived in Chengdu around 1:30 AM that evening. This represented a total of 900 kilometers. A special reminder: The sun was still shining in Zhaotong, but by the time we reached the foot of Wulian Peak (around 5:00 PM), the sky had turned dark, with thick fog and visibility around 500 meters. Please drive carefully.
