Sights in Sanya

People flock to Sanya for the legendary blue sea and sky. However, Sanya's beauty is not just about the passionate ocean. The green tropical rainforest and ancient cultural sites are also the essence of its fascinating beauty.

Wuzhizhou Island

With visibility ranging from 6 to 27 meters, Wuzhizhou Island is home to countless colorful tropical fish and captivating coral reefs, making it a top diving destination in Sanya and even the nation. The island also boasts the whitest beaches in Sanya and a rich tapestry of flora. The dragon blood tree, dating back to the age of the dinosaurs, is the oldest tree left on Earth. If you stay on the island, be sure to visit Guanriyan Rock in the morning to watch the sunrise, the best spot to see the sunrise in Sanya. This spot was also the filming location for Feng Xiaogang's film "Private Tailor," and the romantic row of white viewing seats facing the sea is now one of Wuzhizhou Island's most popular attractions.

The End of the Earth

In people's minds, Tianya Haijiao is synonymous with Hainan. Here, turquoise waters and blue skies blend seamlessly, and a forest of unique rocks stands tall. Giant rocks inscribed with the words "Tianya," "Haijiao," "Nantian Yizhu," and "Haipan Nantian" (Southern Sky Pillar) stand majestically on the seashore. Coming here feels like reaching the end of heaven and earth. Many poignant love stories have taken place here, and today it's a popular destination for people to reminisce about the past.

Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone

The Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone is a large park showcasing traditional Chinese Buddhism. Key attractions include Nanshan Temple, the Nanhai Guanyin Statue, the Unrivaled Dharma Gate, the Guanyin Cultural Garden, the Tianzhu Sacred Site, the Buddhist Scenic Spots Garden, the Ten-Direction Pagoda Forest and Guigen Garden, the Buddhist Cultural Exchange Center, and a vegetarian shopping street. While the Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone boasts numerous attractions, the spectacular 108-meter-tall Sea Guanyin is undoubtedly one of its highlights. Furthermore, the Golden Jade Guanyin, currently the world's largest gold and jade Buddha statue, costing 190 million RMB and renowned throughout Hainan as its "island treasure," is also located within Nanshan Temple.

Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park

Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park served as the primary filming location in Hainan for the film "If You Are the One 2." A diverse array of tropical plants blanket the park, shading the sun and serenely serene with the chirping of insects and birds, creating a vibrant and wild experience. A ride on the park's electric carts to the summit reveals a sea of clouds or mist sweeping across the sky. Longtouling is a great spot for watching the sunrise over the sea, while Hongxialing, the main peak, offers unique views for both sunrise and sunset.

Yanoda Rainforest Cultural Tourism Zone

Yanoda Rainforest is located 18 kilometers from Sanya's Haiyu Middle Line (from Sanya to Baoting), 35 kilometers from downtown Sanya. Dense rainforest blocks out the sun, while cascading waterfalls create a natural oxygen bar. From the scenic area's observation deck, you can overlook Haitang Bay, Wuzhizhou Island, and Nanwan Monkey Island. Don't forget to experience the park's signature "waterfall-walking" activity, which is absolutely thrilling.

Yalong Bay is the most picturesque of Sanya's three major bays (Yalong Bay, Dadonghai Bay, and Sanya Bay), boasting the bluest waters and the whitest sand. Numerous luxury hotels line the Yalong Bay coastline, offering floor-to-ceiling windows in sea-view rooms that offer Sanya's most stunning views. Of course, accommodations come at a premium. Although located approximately 28 kilometers from downtown Sanya, Yalong Bay remains a popular marine paradise for tourists. Visitors to Sanya often make a day trip to Yalong Bay, often taking in other nearby attractions.

Yalong Bay

Yalong Bay, located 28 kilometers southeast of Sanya City, boasts crystal-clear waters, with temperatures consistently above 23°C year-round and radiant sunshine year-round, earning it the reputation of "the best bay in the world." Its wide, flat beach boasts white, soft sand, surpassing even the earliest developed Dadonghai and Sanya Bays in quality. Yalong Bay is also home to a cluster of high-end resort hotels, each boasting its own private beach within walking distance. There are also paid public bathing beaches, allowing visitors to enjoy the paradise of Yalong Bay even without staying at a hotel. The towering totem poles in Yalong Bay's central square are a landmark, while the nearby Shell Museum and Butterfly Valley are perfect for family outings.

While the water quality at Dadonghai isn't as good as that at Yalong Bay, it's still crystal clear with excellent visibility. However, the beach area is considerably smaller. Hotels near Dadonghai are more affordable than those in Yalong Bay. It's also closer to the city center, offering convenient transportation, shopping, and dining options, making it a popular choice for travelers. The duty-free shops near Dadonghai have relocated to Haitang Bay, but the area remains bustling at night, with barbecue stalls and bars along the beach often staying open late. While there aren't many nearby attractions, Dadonghai serves as a hub connecting the city with Yalong Bay.

Dadonghai

Dadonghai is Sanya's oldest developed tropical coastal resort area and the closest bay to the city. Resort hotels in Dadonghai are concentrated in a small area along the beach, offering accommodations significantly cheaper than those in Yalong Bay. The area is moderately priced and bustling at night. While the beach and water quality in Dadonghai aren't as good as those in Yalong Bay, they're much better than those in Sanya Bay. Visibility is high, attracting many sunbathers. Public swimming areas offer rentals of lifebuoys, parasols, and lounge chairs, though freshwater and locker rentals are charged separately.

Luhuitou Mountaintop Park

Luhuitou Park, themed around "love culture" and "ecological exhibition," is known as the "Mountain of Love in the South China Sea." It offers a commanding vantage point for gazing at the sea, watching the sunrise and sunset, and is also a prime spot for admiring Sanya's nightscape. Every Mid-Autumn Festival, the park hosts a variety of celebrations and activities.

Sanya Bay, known for its coconut-lined coastal promenade, is the closest of the three major bays to downtown Sanya. While the water and beaches here are far inferior to those of Yalong Bay and Dadonghai, the Coconut Dream Promenade remains quite popular at sunset. It's a popular spot for locals, and the beach is often filled with children playing and elderly people strolling. Accommodation in the Sanya Bay area is very affordable, with some hotels and inns costing just over 100 yuan per night. It's also close to the First Market, and scenic spots such as Tianya Haijiao, Xiaodongtian Caves, and Nanshan Temple are all located around Sanya Bay.

Sanya Bay

Sanya Bay, located close to downtown Sanya, boasts a 20-kilometer-long coconut-lined coastal promenade, home to the famous Coconut Dream Promenade. While the water quality and beaches of Sanya Bay aren't as good as those of Yalong Bay and Dadonghai, its proximity to downtown and Phoenix International Airport offers convenient transportation. Watching the tide at sunset, with the rhythmic sway of coconut trees and the rich afterglow illuminating your face, is a truly romantic experience.

Coconut Dream Corridor

The Coconut Dream Corridor is a scenic coastal avenue built around Sanya Bay. Coconut trees neatly line the roadside, creating a stunning backdrop against the beach and sea. The Coconut Dream Corridor is a great spot for watching the sunset. On clear days, the golden glow of the setting sun fills the entire corridor. A few gentle clouds create a rare phenomenon called "fire clouds." At low tide, the beach on one side of the corridor creates a dazzling "light beach" under the setting sun.

Big and Small Caves

The Xiaodongtian and Dadongtian Tourist Area, centered around Taoist culture, is known as "Qiongya's premier scenic spot." The mountains within the area are lush with vegetation and offer stunning scenery, including nearly 30,000 dracaena trees (Nanshan immortal pines). The mountains offer clear springs and a variety of wildlife. Below, a winding seven-kilometer coastline is dotted with rock formations, including the South China Sea Dragon King, Xiaodongtian, the Millennium Immortal Pine, and the South China Sea Divine Turtle.

West Island Tourist Resort

Located off the southwest coast of Sanya, two small islands stand facing each other. Due to the abundance of sea turtles near these islands, they are known as East Daimao Island and West Daimao Island. West Island, also known as West Daimao Island, boasts water clarity exceeding 10 meters and abundant aquatic resources. Located within the Sanya National Coral Reef Reserve, it is a popular diving destination. The area boasts scenic spots such as West Island Amusement World, Niuwang Island Ecological Park, and Ximao Fishing Village. West Island Amusement World offers a variety of water activities, and sea fishing and diving are popular among visitors.

Wuzhizhou Island (see pages 6 and 8 for more information on Wuzhizhou Island), formerly known as "Guqizhou" and also known as Lover's Island, lies 2.7 kilometers northeast of Sanya City and boasts the highest water visibility in Sanya. No visitor to Sanya can truly experience the beauty of Sanya without diving at Wuzhizhou Island. Haitang Bay, surrounding Wuzhizhou Island, is also a beautiful bay undergoing development. Numerous high-end hotels have opened, and a large duty-free shop has recently relocated from Dadonghai.

Haitang Bay

Haitang Bay is actually just a "half bay," located at the junction of Haitang Town in Sanya City and Yingzhou Town in Lingshui Li Autonomous County. Due to administrative divisions, the once complete bay was split in two: the half within Sanya is named "Haitang Bay," and the half within Lingshui is called "Tufu Bay." The two "half bays" have a combined coastline length of 25 kilometers. The coastline is breathtaking, with a network of rivers, oases, and lush greenery. Not only is it home to numerous natural wonders, it's also home to a concentration of high-end hotels, and the world's largest single duty-free store is also located in Haitang Bay.

Besides the captivating scenery of the three bays and Wuzhizhou Island, Sanya boasts numerous popular attractions worth exploring. Some are no longer within the city limits, but remain easily accessible. Some of the more famous attractions include Yanoda, renowned for its tropical rainforest scenery; Nanwan Monkey Island, home to adorable macaques; and Binglang Valley, showcasing Hainan's indigenous ethnic culture.

Nanwan Monkey Island Ecotourism Area

Nanwan Monkey Island, located on the Nanwan Peninsula, approximately 14 kilometers south of Lingshui County, Hainan Province, is the only island-based macaque nature reserve in my country and the world. In addition to its pristine natural environment, home to nearly 400 species of tropical plants, nearly 100 animal species, and over 2,500 macaques, a nationally protected species, it is nicknamed "Monkey Island."

Betel Nut Valley

Binglang Valley, known as the Ganshiling Binglang Valley Original Ecological Li and Miao Cultural Tourism Area, is located within the Ganshiling Nature Reserve at the border of Sanya City and Baoting County. The area is so named because of the steep forests on either side and the betel nut valley stretching for several kilometers in the middle. It is a multi-ethnic, multicultural, and diverse tourist attraction encompassing several scenic areas, including the original Ganshili Village, the pristine Miao village, and the mysterious rainforest. Here, visitors can learn about the history of the Li ethnic group, the Miao people's "Chiyou Culture," and the breathtaking scenery of the Ganshiling Mountains.
