If you are an AQHA enthusiast than you don't want to miss this.
You can spend all day viewing the history of the American Quarter Horse, and the people associated with them. A nice gift shop on location as well.

By LauraAlbuquerque |

Very neat place with lot's of history and information. It takes you back in time reading all the biographies. If you are a horse/history person stop by. Beautifully done. Very grand.

By Steve P |

This is really a good value visit. Very modern and very interesting. Even if you have no love of horses it holds some interesting facts and displays. If horses are your thing, you have probably found heaven.

Every year this show gets better and better! It is almost indescribable the talent that is displayed in the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame and Museum in Amarillo, Texas! Jack Sorenson, Edgar Sotelo, newbie - Joshua Sorenson and the amazing Tyler Crow! Go see this before it is over. Plan on seeing it next year! You will be entertained with good art and a great museum tour.

By Dave C |

I'm not a horse person but I like museums, and I had time to kill.. Military discounts, and senior discounts start at 55. Super well done, the history of the Quarter Horse and the association is shown via exhibits on a timeline of American culture, actually pretty neat. Lots of interactive things for the kids, just well-done, clever, and interesting. Super clean and a professional staff as well. If you're going through Amarillo, this is worth a stop.

By okcoxg |

It didn't take as long to go through as I though. It was still very, very impressive. Lots of wonderful history about the American Quarter Horse and their versatility. We are members and it a pleasure to see our money help build the classy place. .

By GrandJan |

Our tour group stopped here on our way to Albuquerque. We all learned a lot about quarter horses and enjoyed the exhibits. There were three areas, one being a hands-on, interactive area that young ones would enjoy.

By ncbiscuit |

My 11 year old daughter rides horses so this was a stop we had to make between Oklahoma City and Albuquerque. It was a vey nice museum with a lot of interesting displays. Our son, 14, even enjoyed the hands on exhibits. This was a nice museum!

By Vanessa P |

Outstanding museum experience. From the history to the archeological to the art... a must-see for any horse-lover!

By AmericanExplorer8500 |

If you are a true horse lover you will love this place. Fascinating collection of history. Great gift shop too. Cheap admission. A nice hour and half of our trip.

By mark s |

Very informative about the history and breeding of the American Quarter Horse, if you ever had one or an interest in one then this is the place for you. Finally had to drag my wife away after about 3 hours, she could have spent the day but we were traveling.

By JoAnn LeBlanc |

Took a toddler, he was very entertained with all there is to see. For the adults, it is also very educational.

By Frank P |

I have a much love and respect for this amazing horse and a vist it the AQHA was a deam come true. Take your kids and take your time to understand and appreciate the contribution this wonderful creature has made to our world and our way if life.

By Dana E N |

If you are a horse enthusiast, this is a good one. Wonderful art, great information about the history of the quarter horse, as well as their use in rodeos, ranching, and racing. There was also an extensive history of their genealogy.
Very interesting experience.
There is an admission fee, but it did not seem to be outrageous.

By Jamie U |

Even if you are not a huge horse fan, this is a great gallery! It is beautiful and well done. They have constantly changing exhibits and art work. Very nice place to visit.

By CDM49 |

Take your time and enjoy the history of local quarter horses. Good presentation and easy to get around. Cost is reasonable and parking is available. Museum is on Interstate 40 and very easy to locate and get to.

By acrotser |

This is a good place if you like hoarse and people history. It was ok. The gift shop was overpriced. Like $60 for a picture frame that cost like $10 to make.

By lopenlead |

Learn all about the Quarter Horse and how they have evolved in recent years. It is a very worth while tour to enjoy photos and memorabilia of the Quarter Horse

By Tracy A |

Great place for those that love horses and want to get out of the heat. Mechanical horse to ride and a 10 minute movie to watch. We learned a lot.

By escape42 |

As Quarter Horse owners and riders in Australia, this was a focus for our visit to USA. We were not disappointed. We were especially welcomed, as visitors from Australia, and had a great time at the museum.
Our visit to the AQHA Headquarters was an amazing experience. As Australian AQHA members, we were afforded VIP status, and experienced a guided tour of the AQHA headquarters. We have many great memories of our visit and wish to maintain connections with some special people we met on our visit there!

By JoMKess |

Not terribly impressed by the contents, but the facilities are among the best I've ever seen. Some excellent learning about horses for those not completely in-the-know, and the timeline is unique, but not a go-again place.

By DianeC-Harper |

lots of history for American Quarter Horse people, lots of collections and things to see. some horse stuff for kids that is hands on

By TexasTravel59 |

Good points:
The architecture of the building is outstanding, particularly the great hall.
Good educational exhibits for quarter horse neophytes like me.
Impressive art work with background on each western artist.
I particularly enjoyed the display on how to read brands.

Bad points:
The video in the theatre could use some updating. It is not worth waiting the ten minutes between showings to view it.

A point that needs addressing ASAP:
We visited on a hot August afternoon when the temperature was 103 F. On exiting the museum and returning to my just cleaned car, I found it completely covered with baked on hard water spots. I suggest adjusting the timing of your sprinkler system to operate at night when evaporative losses are minimized and guests to the museum (like me) don't leave with a very negative impression. I would also suggest adjusting the sprinkler heads to water the grass rather than the parking area.

By uphill69 |

This is a true tribute to quarter horses and the people throughout history that made them what they are today. Very classy.

By June W |

Although I am not a quarter horse oe horse rider this was very interesting none the less Well worth a visit

By Paula C |

This Museum was a stop in a group tour that we took. I can say I have little interest in horses, but we thoroughly enjoyed the museum. You can tour at your own pace. My husband enjoyed all the items pertaining to the cowboy era. Even bought a few items in the gift shop.

By Darlin_Doll |

It is very pricey but interesting. A good time for horse lovers.

By jennifer c |

If you are interested in horses, not just quarter horses, its a must see.

By M F |

Was great fun for the whole family. The kids loved the childrens area, puppets, and the how many hands high are you. Take your camera and have some fun.

By Arlon M |

I guess this would be a venue anyone who likes horses should stop and see if anywhere in the area. It is a really nice facility. We only stopped to see the special exhibit about the "Buffalo Soldiers". This exhibit was better than expected.

By TheGoBird |

At $7 per head it is not worth it but our hotel gave us a brochure with a buy 1, get 1 free coupon. The museum portion is a good primer for those who know little about horses. The extensive hall of fame was way more than I - a person with little horse knowledge - found of interest.

By carlos p |

Lots of history about horses and the owners over the years. A gift shop to take something home. They also have a seniors discount of admittance.

By Valerie R |

This Museum has a lot of history when it comes to our Cowboys and Cowgirls. The place is well kept and very clean. A lot of pride went into this. Very nice experience. Their shop as a lot of nice things to purchase and toys for the kids. Its a place to visit while your here visiting or if you live here!

By Tucker1575 |

If you are into horses or just thinking about horses, and you are traveling to the Amarillo area, make this a stop on your trip. Magnificent art work, bronzes, paintings, fantastic history of the American Quarter Horse and blood lines. Plan to spend about 2 hours. The main foyer is spectacular! Huge bronze plaque, blood lines carved into the floor. We documented history of breeding of the quarter horse and time line overlapped with other historical events. Whole section on the first floor dedicated to learning about horsemanship and horse care, geared toward children. Excellent attraction. Can't say enough about it.

By JAC039 |

I had no interest in Quarter Horses until I visited this lovely museum. Now I am a fan. Wonderful art and exhibitions.

By Huracas |

I'm not interested in horses but I found the history, facts and educational section regarding horses interesting. I thought the museum was laid out well and displays were good but I'm not sure if I would go back.

By wildswanDelaware |

An impressive & extensive Hall of Fame & Museum of historic & recent American Quarter Horses...great educational section on horse care/feeding/equipment and the important role of these horses, breeders & riders in the West. Nice shop, too.

By Debbie R |

WE took our grandkids for a rainy day activity. They enjoyed everything about it. It is very child friendly and the staff were nice to kids and adults alike.

By chipster45 |

Nice for a quick visit, but not much to it. A little horse information, but more about the former AQHA presidents than about horses.

By NCCowboy |

The American Quarter Horse Museum is very informative and a must see for horse enthusiasts. There are a Plethora of Gear from so many famous Horses and Riders from Roping to Racing English to Western. The Development of the Horse was covered to the T. I Think everyone that owns or is thinking of owning a horse should go just to get some in depth knowledge of their horse. The Facilities are top notch. I recommed bringing your Camera for photo ops and the kids for the interactive attractions such as the talking horse and Doctor. The visit should take an hour to hour and a half unless you like to take in every detail then your really in for it.

By Tracy I |

Really neat museum of the history of the American Quarter Horse. Kids 5 and under are free. The even have an interactive area for kids.

By kentwharris |

Definitely worth the trip if you have any interest in the history and heritage of the American Quarter Horse. The people and horses that shaped the breed we know and admire today are all on display.

By A B T |

Main level was awesome & would have earned a "5" rating. Excellent information about horses & their care with some hands on items.
Upstairs definitely showed the political slant of the owners/operators. The sad thing is that it took away from the displays.
We have passed through Amarillo numerous times for the past 20 years & this was our first visit. It is highly unlikely that I will want to stop again.

By Florabunda |

They have a short movie explaining the quarter horse that is nicely done. The first floor has a hands-on exhibit explaining "horse" life, how to care for a horse, what veterinarians do for horses, types of horse riding competitions, saddles, and feed. Directed toward children but I still learned something. Upstairs is all about the professional rodeo cowboy - not an explanation but instead a museum showcasing each riders gear and ribbons.

I don't follow rodeos and had no appreciation for the rodeo museum.

They also have a nice gift shop and the staff was friendly.

By Texas Style C |

great stop for all the family. It is well worth the time to stop by and check out these panhandle icons

By maddiemae81 |

Maybe it's not the AQHA's fault I didn't like this place at all. I was expecting a smaller version of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, with a focus on the quarter horse. In full disclosure, I own two quarter horses, so it's not that horses aren't an interest of mine. To me, this seemed like the AQHA spent its membership dollars on a place for their foundation to have beautiful office space and fundraising events, rather than a place to honor and memorialize the quarter horse. People in the history of the quarter horse were well honored, but the horse itself, not as much as the people. We won't stop again, sorry.

By dovewood |

Seeing the best Quarter horses, reading about the history of American Quarter Horse Association was a treat. We also enjoyed the free QH movie.

By ironhorse_10 |

Fascinating displays, film shows, interactive exhibits for children. Amazing collections of artefacts and memorabilia. Quite emotional if you love Quarter Horses. Very highly recommended.

By dennis n |

I decided to stop by not sure why because I'm not into horses. As you pull up you can't be nothing but impressed by the sculptures outside. They are beautiful. This continues inside with an impressive array of sculptures, painting and numerous displays. The US a large area for children to keep busy. This industry pays due honor to women in a seperate section. A must see especially for horse lovers

By P J B |

Wow, so much information in a great setting. The murals, statues, and the stories were so interesting. Loved that the images of these horses show how versatile they are. So interesting!

By bansterref |

I love horses, this was a beautiful experience. I learned a lot oh history about the American Quarter Horse.

By 547stacyb |

Love all the photos, statues and reading material in the museum. Its great for kids and adults alike. The special family events are always a hit.

By StalinWasRight |

This is a OK Place, Bur Again, It's kinda Boring just a little bit, Idk maybe I just expect more out of the place honestly idk.

By nanookdalla2 |

One of the best museums we have been to. All about horses. Watch all the videos. Staff was very friendly and gave us insight into the operation of the museum and the foundation.

By Elo G |

We went a couple of years ago, excellent place to go with family and if you love horses, is a place that every visitor to Amarillo should go.

By Casey K |

I liked the bottom level more than the top level: there were a lot of fun attractions downstairs. Upstairs is a bit tedious, too many things to read in my opinion. However, it was a really nice place, worth a stop!

By mhans4 |

This was a surprise. I learned so much about the quarterhorse. It has an interactive section reared toward children. It also has an audio option to a self guided tour that offers a very in depth look at the people who were a big part of the American Quarterhorse industry. Like any interest people have they are very passionate about what they have done and continue to do make this a respected sport. Great job!

By LVOldTimer |

Everything you every wanted to know about Quarter Horses and the old west. Wonderful museum and a place to spend some time as a break from traveling. It would be possible to spend a few hours if the time permits.

By Eileen L |

I am most impressed by this museum. The building itself is very well designed and fun just to be in. The information on the Quarterhorse was detailed and informative in an interesting way. I love horses but really have no real connection to them so I recommend this Museum for horse lovers as well as those who are curious and willing to learn something new.

By Mr A |

Stopped here with 3 adults, 1 child (6 yrs) and 1 infant. The fee was $10 for each adult and I think both kids were free. The only thing I knew about quarter horses and racing was from 2 Hollywood movies that I saw several years ago, so I expect to learn a lot going here, but I left knowing nothing new and was not impressed by my visit at all! In summary the whole place was about very, very rich folks who owned a multimillion dollar horse that won a race; there’s almost no mention of the horse trainers or even the jockeys that actual rode the horse to winning. There’s very little history about horses in the US and much more to be desired on how the quarter horse breed plays into things.

By gjj |

A great museum with lots of exhibits to see. Very interesting for anyone interested in learning more about the American Quarter Horse!

By Chris M |

So it was raining buckets when we arrived and I was thankful that we were able to park close enough to run in. The first floor area is perfect for small children to interact and touch the various tools and material involved with not only horse racing but with the equine business in general. The second floor has an amazing collection of history of the AQHA and its roots in America.

By frequentflyer121 |

I love visiting here! So much history and it's put together thoughtfully. The gift shop is gorgeous. This is a must see for anyone who ever loved horses!

By agertojl |

My husband has a long history with quarter horses so he enjoyed all the historical information and could identify with the horse lines and owners. It was an education for me since I do not have the same history. This facility is so beautiful and upscale. Nice gift shop.

By Texans615 |

This facility is a true tribute to the American Quarter Horse. It has pictures and statues of famous horses and people associated with the breed. A first class place with very friendly people. There are even interactive exhibits for children to enjoy. They have special events for the whole family to educate people and let kids interact with live animals. Amarillo is very lucky to have this nice facility.

By CATravelogger |

This is an extraordinarily well done museum. I never knew the quarter horse was so important to the history of the American West, or how just a few dedicated families have devoted so much of their lives to preserving the breed and blood lines. The facility is modern and impressive, and the timeline is very educational. They even have a section of a real starting gate from a quarter horse racetrack, which was extremely cool to see. Definitely worth our 90-minute visit, and very easy to find just off I-40 in the heart of Amarillo.

By txgirlfriday7678 |

Went in on a Saturday afternoon because I was in town for work, but had the weekend off. I spent two or three hours there just browsing around. It wasn't busy at all. Wish the gift shop had more to choose from, but it was nice.

By B. P |

Very nice place to visit if you like or have horses. Gives details of the history of the horse in America and Famous horses and breeding lines.

By Brenda M |

Loved this place, but I have owned quarter horses. For children there are good educational exhibits. Nice gift shop. Worthwhile stop forus.

By JeayPay |

We took our daughter because she is crazy about horses! We were surprised by how much we learned. The museum does an excellent job of sharing the immense history of quarter horses.

By vinvert1974 |

I've always wanted to visit when we've gone through Amarillo before. There are some great photo opportunities outside. Inside has a great genealogy chart. History of horses (current exhibit), horse anatomy, upstairs has the hall of fame and history about quarter horses through the years.

By Rosanne52 |

If you love horses you will love this museum. It's done extremely well. We enjoyed it very much. Well worth the price.

By equusigns |

Was disappointed to see so much focus on people and not horses. Beautiful facility. Many videos did not work and we weren't told this at entry. Nice children's area. Expected more historical focus in movie instead of marketing. Could not find a single thing of interest in gift shop. People at next door corporate office were fantastic.

By DrPhyxit |

This small museum on the east end of Amarillo just off I-40 displays a cool historic time line related to the history of the American Quarter Horse. Inexpensive and worth the trip.

By imanoutdoorgrl |

This is a nice musem dedicated to the American Quarter Horse. Lots of interesting facts about Quarter Horses and their lineage that coincide with American history. There's some neat stuff to keep kids busy.

By Sherry R |

There's a charge to visit this museum but the money goes to support the AQH association. Lots of beautiful tack, historical things and more to see. Well worth the price.

By Luckypink48 |

Fantastic facility! Friendly staff. If you love the history of horses you can get it here. Displays of Hall of Famers, trophies, saddles, pictures, etc. Allow one and a half to two hours if you want to read everything.Good gift shop.

By Bill D |

We've been past the museum many times and always said we should see it. Needing something to do while visiting family we decided to see what was on offer. We were not disappointed and were very glad we pulled the trigger. The building itself is attractive inside and out. The Great Hall is well done in a variety of stone. The link between American horse culture and Mexican charro culture is explored in detail and is of great interest. The museum has great flow from exhibit to exhibit and the gift shop is worth a look. You do not have to be a liver of horse flesh to enjoy the museum and the price is very reasonable.

By Jess5K |

Horse raising and racing has been an American institution since the first horse was brought across The Pond by the Spanish. This wonderful compendium of knowledge of this sport/pastime is a joy to take in and learn all about the true American Pastime. :) I visited when I went across the country from Maine to Phoenix, AZ. It was great seeing all the breeds of Quarter Horses, the various tools, saddles, and implements used to train horses to race, and many other aspects of horse racing. I am a fan of history and museums, and this was a great attraction to hit on the way across Main Street, America.

By Paige F |

Although I've been in Quarter Horses many years, the museum showed the wide range of jobs the Quarter Horse has handled over the years. It was so interesting to see the great horses of the past, and their many achievements.

By David S |

This is a great place if you want to learn about Quarter horses and their history. Anyone over 55 also gets a senior discount! Very nice and informative. Free parking also

By Mike B |

We enjoyed spending time in the museum and plan to go back. Learned a lot on the history of the quarterhorse.

By Exploration821996 |

A great museum to give the history of the quarter horse and some beautiful art work. Also an additional exhibit on the Mexican cowboy

By jacqueline s |

great historical representation of evolution of organization. Would not miss it if you are into horses

By joyceanncook |

This is a beautiful facility for all horse lovers. Children will enjoy the interactive exhibits and learn while having fun.Adults will find the art and exhibits worth the time. We were even able to trace the blood lines of a quarter horse we owned when we were first married.

By krcorbin |

If you are western horse oriented, then this is the place for you to go. Beautiful facility with excellent staff and exhibit.

By Robert C |

Kids would have a hard time staying tamed in this place. Just a bunch of history and reading. Din't mind it myself, but wouldn't bring rowdy kids in there. Great history information though!!!!

By Stephanie S |

This is a beautiful showcase for the American quarter horse. The building is gorgeous, and the sculptures were a marvel, I loved the history of the bloodlines and seeing the evolution of the breed. Absolutely recommend stopping for a couple of hours if you are anywhere around Amarillo.

By Catherine M |

This museum is part of the American Quarter Horse Association, whose headquarters are in Amarillo, so naturally there's a lot of neat stuff about quarter horses. A big part of the AQHA mission is to acquaint people with how versatile the breed is, from roping steers and herding cattle to pulling buggies to competing in hunter-jumper classes. It's a mission this museum totally achieves. But even if you aren't a died-in-the-wool horse lover, there are a lot of fascinating exhibits. Horses played such a role in American history, from Paul Revere's ride to the opening of the west, and even in World War 1. A painless way to brush up on your U.S. history! Plus some of the exhibits, such as the parade saddles, are awesome for their artistry.

By Tamieko B |

This was a refreshing educational experience. The cost was $6, which is under priced for the amount of education and experience one can obtain. One could spend hours reading and admiring the exhibits as well as the art displays. The museum has plenty of room for all to enjoy the beauty of each section for as long as they like. There is also a gift shop that even has a "basically give it away" clearance section for valuable gifts. This is definitely for all ages to enjoy.

By Paul S |

This was my first trip to this museum and I was very impressed. This museum is a great tribute to the men, women and horses that have made this breed the largest in the world. This is a must see for horse lovers young and old.

By Vlangov |

My husband and I had an unexpected layover in Amarillo and decided to go to the QH Museum. If you grew up on a farm, enjoy horses or are just a person who enjoys horses, don’t miss this museum. It is very interesting and weaves social happenings and stories of different eras with what was happening with Quarter horses. It was worth the 2 hours we spent. We could have stayed longer. Great interactive things to learn for children who are interested in a career with horses.

By vinvert1974 |

We arrived too late to visit the inside but there is lots of info and photo opps outside. We really love horse racing and consequently really enjoyed this place; someday we're getting inside to check it out,

By Kay E |

This is a must see even if you don't have a horse. The beautiful artwork, wall of Fame and gift shop will be enjoyed by all.

By Cherrykay |

This was a really cool place a lot of history and beautiful horse pictures

By Anita R |

There is so much history of the "West" that is incorporated in the many displays. Beautiful sculpted horses and riders. The attire of the riders as well as the horses and how it has changed over the years.

By johnmcd2 |

Quarter horse center is a great day trip for small to elementary age kids. They have a great history lesson on the quarter house and its contribution to the Texas panhandle. Lots of small hands on items for young kids to do.

By doankd |

The museum was so full of interesting materials and exhibits. For a small and specifically focused place they had plenty to learn and see. The cost of $7 for adults was a great price for the amount of information you got. Even if you are not familiar with the breed or horses in general it was worth visiting. It was such a fun way to learn history of the Amarillo area and so much more. With fun activities areas I would think this place would be a great family adventure.

By donnalorrig |

Had always wanted to see this and was glad to be able to when we were passing through Amarillo. Right of the Interstate, reasonably priced, can be a quick stop if you are in a hurry or nice to take your time through if you have some time to kill.

By TexasTravelers02 |

Very nice museum with a great exhibit for children or those of us who don’t know much about these majestic animals!

By neilajones |

A horse that is bred to race a quarter of a mile. Did you know that? If you come from the US you probably do but we didn't. The building, the museum, the Hall of Fame are there as a temple to these wonderful creatures which are the workhorses of the ranches as well as the more glamorous racing circuits. Very interesting indeed. Worth going to Amarillo just to see this

By Got Keried Away |

They have a cool quarter horse hands on exhibition for kids. They can interact with lots of educational stuff. They also had an art exhibition for local teen artist which was inspiring & interesting.

By ksmyws |

A must see for horse buffs of any kind. As you enter the grand hall the feeling is beautiful. Many different sights to see. The staff was very pleasant, and gives you a warm welcome upon your arrival.

By badabing9504 |

The massive foyer was like a chapel.......no one wanted to speak above a whisper! The displays were truly informative and the artwork was phenomenal.

By Tresa M |

If you are into horses there are plenty of educational opportunities and a great little gift shop

By SB S |

Beautiful building inside. Historical information, displays of racing and western riding items, donations have made this a nice national museum for us who are horse lovers, especially the quarter horse.

By Evecat |

Excellent museum honoring the American Quarterhorse. Outdoor arena lends itself to interesting demonstrations for those uninitiated to the horse. Love it.

By Sebbyboy |

The American Quarter Horse Association is headquartered in Amarillo along Interstate 40 East. Adjacent to the AQHA office building is an absolutely stunning AQHA Heritage and Museum Building. Even if you are not a Quarter Horse Buff (or any horse breed), do visit this museum. I was born and raised in Amarillo but have not lived in the area for 40+ years. My wife and I visited the Museum for the first time in June 2018 with two of our grandchildren, boys ages 5 and 7. Some of the history and photographs of all the important people in AQHA history may be boring to the casual attendee, there are plenty of exhibits (some interactive) to captivate children and non-horse owning adults. Admission cost is reasonable and parking ample. Elevators available and I do think the building is friendly to strollers and wheelchairs. Restrooms are of course available. Gift shop??

I highly recommend a visit.

By Amanda C |

Downstairs is a lot more kids oriented, which was well done but I wasn't there with children. Upstairs, though, had an awesome several room, elaborate, timeline of horse influence in American history that I found fascinating. They tied in what was happening in mainstream culture at the time (loved all the Disney movie releases) so it wasn't just reading meaningless dates, and then showed the 'hoof-print' quarter horses were making at the same time. Very cool!

By Helen S |

They redid this museum in 2010 or 2011. There is not as much for kids to do now. It is mostly photos, etc.

By 204barbarak |

We have been to Amarillo a lot of times; and didn't even know about this museum. It was very interesting and informative of all the winning horse and riders. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable. Also, gift shop in lobby.

By texasrepublichistory |

The first word that came to mind as I entered the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame and Museum was "Classy". I would rate this museum as one of the best in Texas and really tells you everything you would ever want to know about the American Quarter Horse. Beautiful inside galleries and excellent art work and sculptures outside. The short film is a great introduction to the museum and the special exhibit on the famous women of Quarter Horse raising was very interesting. I noticed the kids in the museum had a great time also. Highly recommended for anyone who loves horses and the history of Quarter Horses in ranching and racing.

By Linda D |

We were only in the area for a couple days and unfortunately numerous things we had hoped to visit were closed on Sundays. There are nice horse sculptures outside the museum. Be sure to check museum hours.

By Cusinario |

We are horse lovers so this venue was of particular interest to us. However the beautiful building and professional displays make it a must stop for everyone. I would say it probably isn't going to be something the kids would enjoy.

By Virginia D |

The museum is very nice and houses alot of interesting history of quarter housed. It is easily accessible from the interstate.

By Theresa O |

Stopped by for about an hour and a half. Kept a teenage girl interested the whole time. Great collection of memorabilia!

By Michael O |

The quarter horse is an important part of the American west and these exhibits will inform both the novices--with horse facts, and the aficionados--with equine geneology.

By classof62 |

Not a horse lover but found it very interesting and I was in awe at the building itself. The displays were very well presented.

By mastarmed |

I'm not a horse person, but guests of mine are and they wanted to go. I had a good time. It is interesting and you learn alot. Be sure to look at the bloodline wall.

By Todd R |

We have quarter horses so wanted to see the Hall of fame. The center is basically a series of pictures of horses in the hall of fame with their story and stories of owners. Seeing the story of some of the foundation horses was interesting. I guess i wanted to see more than just a picture with a story under it.

By Manatee27 |

Anything you want to know about quarter horses you will find here. Nicely arranged exhibits. Nice gift shop also. Also local history.

By Keith R |

This is a must see museum if you are at all interested in horses. The staff is welcoming. The museum is fun for everyone . . . kids as well as adults. The location is easy to get to.

By MAKEY222 |

Such an impressive museum and Hall of Fame. We learned so much about quarter horses. They had beautiful oil paintings of horses... saddles, trophies, etc. This place is a must for travelers... whether you know a lot about horses or are novices like ourselves.

By Incognito |

We are not “horse people” but we thoroughly enjoyed the high quality presentations and links to other happenings in concurrent timelines. The staff were friendly and accommodating.

By Kay M |

I agree with most of the other reviews that this museum is especially wonderful if you are truly into horses, but there is somethings no here for everyone. We love bed seeing the chuck wagon and the original starting gate. Also, there were some fun facts listed here and there, and the one we left fed best was that Ulysses Grant rode a quarter horse Duro no the Civil War, and his horse’s name was Little Jeff Davis. There were many interesting facts we learned about the breed as well as some great artifacts. The video was disappointing as was the gift shop.

By Sue P |

My husband is the horse-lover in our family, but even I enjoyed the exhibits! The live demonstrations are great to watch, too!

By Rose T |

I watched this place being built when we lived in McLean, TX., just a few miles east on Rt. 66. It's dedicated to just Quarter Horses ( The American Breed). It's FASINATING!! 2 floors of beautiful statues, paintings, history & lots of visuals! Kid love it, Adults love it, and you will too. Take your time its expansive. Just ENJOY!!

By MO8ball |

Stopped as part of a bus tour. Not too interested in the horses, but the museum was beautiful inside and out. Displays were well done. Definitely recommend to those interested in quarter horses.

By stevesV906CP |

I enjoyed seeing the write-ups on all the Hall of Fame horses and horsemen and horsewomen, many of whom I was personally acquinted. Those that I was not familiar with, I was able to learn about. I have never been to a museum that I enjoyed as much. Thanks to the great people at the AQHA and the great horse men and women that have come before us.

By Monica P |

Looking for something to show our 5 year old and this museum has nice kid friendly exhibitions as well as lots of info regarding horses and Texas.

By mbei33 |

I had time on my way out to the airport to stop and tour the AQHA Museum. Interesting to look through the place, lots of history. I thought the bloodlines display on the floor in the main hall quite interesting. I paid $7 for an adult admission.

By Tamerra J |

There isn't really much interaction or deep information about quarter horses. Mostly filled with time lines and a memorial to those involved in the AQHA association. Would not recommend for children.

By Mary Jo C |

Unless you are a real horse lover, this museum is a waste of your time. You can see the best part of it outside, by viewing the various bronzes.

By Travelingwideandfar |

Nice display of basic horse care and types of riding competitions. Upstairs the displays of highly awarded riders and their gear wasn't that interesting, I liked the Cowboy Museum in Oklahoma much better.

By pricetamer |

I recommend this to anyone. It would be a great place to take kids and grandkids. Lots of educational info for both adults and children. Lots of history. Interactive stations for kids.

By Lyn |

For anyone who has an interest in horses and the role they’ve played in our history, this is a great stop. There are horse themed fine art offerings for sale, museum exhibits, and a photo hall of memorabilia and people who have contributed to the breeding of these gray animals.

By Robin M |

While on a Senior Citizens bus trip, we stopped at this museum. This museum told us the story of Quarter Horses in the US. There was a lot of information on horse facing throughout the years. There were also many beautiful paintings in this museum. I think this museum was well worth the price of admission.

By richardderose |

We spent a couple of hours looking at all the displays. You could easily spend longer. If you are into horses this is a must see.

By Cowgirlb12 |

This place is very interesting, lots of history! Make sure you make enough time, there is a lot to see!

By LeslieA |

This was an interesting little museum for a short (air-condiitoned!) stop. The admission clerk gave us some tokens for the kids' mechanical pony ride, which my little girls adored. My older tween & teen found the exhibits interesting, including the orientation video. The gift shop was well-stocked with horse memorabilia also.

By armand s |

Great muesum if you are a horse lover , ranch lover.. worth the stop. Horses were big part and still are in West Texas.

By Karen Stephens |

the cost of entering the musium is very reasonable at only $6 per adult. it is a small but beautiful building honnouring the american quater horse and their riders. the exhibits are very repetitave and become boring very quickly. outside are some stunning statues of horses and the shop is very expensive. check with the amerillo vistor ctr because they have voutchers for buy one get one free entry and savings on any thing bought in the shop.

By vkingta |

Learned alot about the Quarter Horse - 2nd fav breed (me), 1st for wife. :) Wife is advid rider and sort-of a "horse whisperers" and this place made her happy. Nuff said..

By donwoj2014 |

Have owned quarter horses , so that is what sparked the interest . But had no idea of the history and tradition of the breed.
Would recommend to everyone not just horse lovers.

By gwandeleanorf |

The American Quarter Horse Headquarters and Museum provides a very pleasant way to spend an afternoon. If you know what a quarter horse is, no explanation is necessary. If you don't, you will soon find out here. The quarter horse (so named because it is among the fastest creatures on earth for a quarter-mile) is the legendary mount of cowboys everywhere. There are tracks throughout the southwest where these magnificent mounts race. But here at the museum, all the lore of past and present are available to the senses, in a venue that breathes CLASS. Everything you've always wanted to know about horsemanship is available here, and the place is full of surprises. If you love museums, this will be among your favorites. If you don't, prepare to reconsider. A great plact to spend an afternoon.

By jdav584 |

The price was reasonable. The museum was extremely informative. The bathrooms, exhibits, and museum itself were well maintained. It's definitely a must see for anyone interested in the history of the quarter horse. The museum is jam packed with information to absorb.

By Pat W |

Museum is neat, lots of interactive things for younger kids. We learned many new things reading and looking at the exhibits.

By SoonerJJ |

I have 2 boys ages 9 & 13 who are fascinated by horses. They enjoyed looking around. Also, very quick but informative info easy to follow

By tessabear2010 |

I am uninformed regarding quarter horses or any horse for that matter. It was very interesting reading and learning about the bloodlines. The statues are stunning. The next day as I toured the canyon on a quarter horse I remembered so much of the historical info I saw and read.

By Dean D |

If you are wanting to learn about the history of the American Quarter Horse, this is the place to go. It is a beautiful place filled with lots of pictures and history of the American Quarter Horse and a very professional and informative staff to assist you. A great place to take the entire family.

By JAE37 |

Anyone interested in horses, history of American quarter horses and especially famous horses will find so much! Since I grew up in Alaska and had never seen a horse until visiting the lower 48, I really appreciated learning something about the family business after I married the "Texan". Displays are very attractive and interesting.

By staceyge |

Very nice museum. Had an interactive part that was fun. Mostly just pictures and tropheys though. Mostly just about breeding, showing and racing. Kinda disappointed that there was not more about rodeo or roping aspect of the American Quarter Horse. Plus there could of been more about the horses and less about the people. The charro exhibit was super nice.

By Pam S |

The new AQHA museum is a wonderful tribute to the great Quarter horse breed and the men and women who have worked hard to maintain and promote this majestic animal. I visited the old museum many years ago; the new facility is so much better! Whether you are a horse owner or not, this museum has something for everyone, including a fun, hands-on area for kids. Don't miss out on this one!

By Relf C |

Very concise history on these horses. It's probably best for real enthusiasts and not for the smaller kids as the history boards are just filled with facts that will make your head spin. It'll be a once only trip for us but this history is what made Amarillo and Texas so colorful so in that respect it deserves to be visited by all at least once.

By NinaMarie R R |

This museum is a must to see in Amarillo! If you love horses, you'll love them even more when you go there. Lots to see..photos, saddles GALORE, and the family tree in the main corridor is awesome! It's majestic!

By ransom007 |

The museum has free parking as does the American Quarter Horse Association in the building next door (the street is one way, so you will see it first). The association is an office facility and not a tourist attraction. Back to the museum, the staff is friendly and informative. The museum has many exhibits including the hall of fame which includes both two-legged and four-legged members. An educational way to spend a couple of hours or more if you wish.

By Suzanne H |

If you like horses and ranching. You will love this place. Great gift shop. Lots of history. Things to keep the kids interested. Different special events, check out what's going on when you will be visiting.

By dogsgone1 |

There is always new exhibits and beautiful artwork! The gift shop has great gifts and clothing.
The day of the cowboy is always a fun packed day.

By snerd45 |

Well set out and appointed, staffed by friendly and helpful people that live their work. Well worth a look.

By debrasam |

Excellent Museum with great service from staff. Fun place for the kids and excellent place for Horse lovers. Great information and fun to see the life of how horses became such a big part of our cultural.

By mdav0305 |

According to my son this museum absolutely exceeded his expectations. He's 9 years old and he was very grumpy about having to go to a stupid horse museum. However, he really loved the place, it's very informative and child friendly. They explain general horse related topics in a child friendly way and there's a lot of interactive stuff. He said it was one of the best museums he'd ever been to.

By Texaspainter |

I like the presentation of the history of the Quarter horse and the many exhibits. It has a very good gift shop too.

By Nicole A |

Interesting and informative museum. Friendly staff. Very clean and bright. Wheelchair accessible and stroller friendly. Clean restroom. Affordable

By Barbara G |

It was very educational and enlightening. A great place to take children especially ones that do not know much about horses. A lot of history.

By Jan R |

Took a group of third graders there a few years ago. Great if you're into horses or have young kids that are all about cowboys.

By Daniel A |

If you are a Cowboy or not, you need to visit here. The upstairs is amazing. Lots of history. If you are a horse person, this is a MUST Stop.

By Chris C |

Nice place , definitely a must see when in Amarillo

By Chris N |

Learn the ropes on QuarterHorses. Some engaging interactive exhibits for children.
Lots of info on the unfolding of the quarterhorse in America. Well crafted place - fairly captivating. If with kids maybe take an hour. If just adults could spend 3-4 hours here.

By Michael H |

Great museum. This place is first class it must have cost a fortune to build as nothing looks 'off the shelf'. Great displays of both horses and the people who made Quarter Horses what they are today. Make sure to stop and look on the floor of the Grand Hall as the blood lines of modern QH are traced back. When I was there, today, there was a display of art and sculpture that was for sale for fund raising. Very tempting as the works were beautiful and very reasonable.

By StevefromMesquite |

This museum is handy off and on to Interstate 40 while traveling through Amarillio. The museum is not too large. We covered it thoroughly in about 90 minutes. If you want to stretch your legs for an hour after a big meal before getting back on the Interstate this is a comfortable, somewhat interesting place. I am a former member of the AQHA and some of the exhibits were interesting. There were several exhibits geared toward children if you are interested in that. There were some excellent sculptures outside. Much of the space is dedicated to the people who founded and supported the AQHA. Those exhibits I am certain are much more interesting to their families than to travelers.

By jacob254 |

This place was great. There was many great places to see and kept my attention the entire time. Great place to stop if your interested into these kind of things. The best part for me was all of the trophies.

By Missy B |

I've always wanted to visit the AQHA museum and finally got the opportunity to do so.
What an amazing place. The history and pieces there are too much to inhale. I could stay for hours looking and absorbing all the information.

By UncleRoy1 |

Awesome place for teaching young folks about Western Heritage and culture.

The kids (age 12) loved the interactive displays.

By KittyKuotes |

This is truly a must see for anyone who loves our American Quarter Horses. The chapel like entrance hall memorial, the wonderful displays of Quarter Horse racing artifacts, and the homage to the Western horse. There is also a great exhibit of horse education (everything you need to know before you buy a horse. Aimed toward young people but great for everyone). A beautiful art galley with paintings, drawings and sculptures for sale is also in the museum. There is so much to see you simply have to go. Admission is only $6.00 per adult. A great bargain.

By BWWC87 |

Awesome museum with lots of photo and gift options. Don't miss for history elements of the West, the horse and specifically for racing and Quarter Horse fans. Whether you like horses, racing or history it's a must see.

By Jenny B |

Took my grandkids to a day of roping, barrel racing, craft activities. Included horses rides, and fun foods. Kids enjoyed it. Museum is interesting for adults but rather boring for 10 and under kids.

By Bill B |

The museum pays homage to the old boys and girls that developed the racing end of the AQHA. The backyard horse people that world wide support the AQHA are given little recognition. There is so much more about the AQHA that is missing from the museum than is there.

A movie is included with admission but the theatre was closed for common people the day I visited so some important people could use it for a meeting. The AQHA has a large office building next door. Why couldn't the important folks meet there?

The museum displays were well done and for an extra fee an audio tour is available that gives in depth explanations on the many greats of AQHA racing with a little bit on ranching and showing. Other museums would do well to learn from the AQHA audio tour.

By josephbarbknecht |

Have been here before and it was a nice side trip . They do this place well. Surprised more people do not attend

By Mekhali P |

Best place you can be FEE is minimal I Love it.This place need to advertise more, lot of people do not know about this place.

By Rebecca G |

I feel like I would've really enjoyed this place if I loved horses. It is really nice to look at though; you can tell a lot of work was put into the museum. Even though I'm not a huge fan of horses, this museum trip was still fun.

By bronzepalmtree |

Great nostalgic event for the bloodline enthusiast. Timelines to follow throughout the building leading through qh history from origin. Some kid stuff on level one that's neat for young ones. An art room that has on display for sale art mostly oil/pencil/charcoal/bronze sculpture, fascinating talent in that room. The building itself is beautifully made. My favorite display is actually the wall outside with the running horse shadows across it, would've like to seen it lit by the lights at night. Non-members $10/each entry fee. There is a store inside as well with nick nack/ qh clothing, etc.

By BrakiWorldTraveler |

We visited this museum as my daughter is a big fan of horses, so she insisted.
The museum is well displayed, but kind of boring, even she was bored and disappointed after 30 min. It depicts the horses role and great impact on inhabiting the west and US history which we all, more or less know.

By markbonnett |

This was a great stop on our tour and we really enjoyed the building and statues. Easy location and friendly people.

By bjaytaylor |

My dad was a breeder when I was growing up so it is very hard to say anything bad about this place. The only problem was I wish there was more.

By theagateer |

Very interesting museum about quarter horses and racing! Be sure to also watch the brief movie. The gift shop also features many great books and items.

By mini |

We went to the American Quarter Horse Heritage Center & Museum.

We loved it as we have relatives who are very much into horses.

There are nice statues in front of the museum.

Inside the museum there is the Hall of Fame on the first floor. I also liked the historical time line and notable people on the 2nd floor. There is also a display for the 2017 inductees into the hall of fame.

There are also beautiful artwork featuring the Quarter Horse.

There is a very good movie on horses. It was nice that the movie included scenes both from Texas and California. The exhibits focused on Quarter Horses Notable People and events in the USA.

We also liked the various displays on horses.

If one likes horses, its a fabulous way to learn more about he history of the organization. Its something that is nice to learn about and school age kids to seniors will like it if they have an interest in the American Quarter Horse.

The museum is beautiful. There is a gift store.

Staff is very nice.

Price is very reasonable for this quality of museum. Staff is very nice.

By Julie87508 |

Hadn't visited here for many, many years, when we took our horse-crazy daughter here. Still great, even if you aren't a horse enthusiast.

By Cliff C |

What a great tribute to the American Quarter Horse. The facility itself is amazing and very well done. The history of the horses and the people is top notch all the way. The staff could not be more friendly.

By JudyTheGypsy |

The American Quarter Horse Heritage Center & Museum far surpassed my expectations. As a Quarter Horse owner and lifelong fan of the breed, I expected to enjoy the museum. However, I was not prepared for beautiful buildings, both inside and out, plus the vast collection of historical information and artifacts contained therein. It was fascinating to follow the history and evolution of the breed and association.

I suspect this museum may not garner the same level of respect and admiration from the non-horse lovers, but for the price of admission and close proximity to Interstate 40, I would highly recommend it to anyone traveling through Amarillo.

By Cynthia P |

We are not horse or horse racing aficionados however we enjoyed the museum and Hall of Fame. Worth a stop if you're in the area.

By Pam L |

Beautiful buildings and art. Too bad we didn't have longer to enjoy it. We were only able to see the outside because we arrived after hours, but thoroughly enjoyed what they had to offer outdoors.

By NXTTRP |

Especially if you know nothing about quarter horses, this is a great stop to learn and appreciate. A very well done museum with lots of info, there’s something for everyone.

It was raining when we stopped, but clearly there are times when quarter horses are on hand for demonstrations. Lots of pictures and hands on exhibits. The history of the breed is well chronicled by the use of a timeline of world events.

The museum is easy to find, it literally overlooks the Interstate. Parking couldn’t be easier.

Of course there’s a gift shop. Very well done!

By Anna H |

We really enjoyed this historical museum on the American Quarter Horse. We learned a lot we never knew.

By Ccccranberries |

My fiance is the horse expert, but even with my ignorance, this was an incredible museum. They have a vast amount of information regarding horses and history of horses. They had a wonderful art exhibit--photos mostly--that was beautiful as well.

By Road_Fun_Fam |

We had a buy 1 get 1 coupon and one of our kids got in free so the total price was cheap. It is a very nice facility with some hands on exhibits for kids. But overall to get the most out of this museum you really need to be into horses or better yet quarter horses. Worth one visit but not for repeats for this family.

By azbullrider |

so much history and great things in here loved seeing the all the displays and such, i am huge racehorse enthusist so i enjoyed beign here

By sandyaqh |

Even if you're not a horse person, you will enjoy visiting this terrific site. Outside the museum, there are life-size bronzes of famous American Quarter Horses and their owners and/or exhibitors. Upon entering, you will be treated to a life-size bronze of the Dogwood Horse, a sculpture by famous western artist, Mehl Lawson. Inside the lofty rotunda, the floor is etched with the heritable lines of the breed, tracing back to the earliest known ancestors. On the right side of the great hall is the art gallery, with walls lined with western art by many famous as well as up and coming artists. The displays change periodically. Downstairs is also an interactive display that will delight both young and old members of your family. Upstairs, you will find a time-line of the history of the American Quarter Horse paralleled with a history of the world. This is a place that you don't want to miss!

By John H |

Anyone who admires the American Quarter Horse should enjoy this experience. Museum is very clean, has excellent displays and a wealth of quarter horse information.

By stellacadente |

I love riding and I found this museum very interesting; Amarillo is the country where this beautiful horse is born. Here there are a lot of informations about quarter horse, there are pics and descriptions of the most famous riders and horse. And there is an interactive part where you can really learn about saddles and harnesses. I loved it.

By George623 |

I'll be honest, the only reason I went to the museum was because I had a family member in an art contest there, but really enjoyed the museum and the gift shop as well. I was pleasantly surprised. If you love horses or western art you will love this place.

By sndman62 |

I took my niece, who is crazy about horses, here and she had a very nice time. I would imagine it could be a bit dry for someone who didn't have a background in horses but then it is what it is. The gift shop is execellent and the admission cost is very affordable. There are some interactive displays for children and the facility is clean and modern.

By jamesoI9320SY |

This is the home and museum of the American Quarter Horse which was developed specifically for the unique requirements of cattle herding 100 years ago. These horses are extremely quick and agile for relatively short distances which is what was required when moving cattle over long distances. Very unique experience and a fun visit.

By Larry-Bronco-Billy |

For people who love horses, especially cow horses, this is a must see. They have beautiful exhibits and much information. There is just something about horses, especially Quarter Horses that 'grab a holt of ya by the heart and soul' and this is a great place to indulge. They have 'hands on' exhibits for kids that are interesting for us big kids as well. Cowboys - Texas - Home On The Range - if you just want to reach out and touch it, stop by and reach out.

By prizepkg |

Even non-interested folks will gain an appreciation for the history, versatility and love of the American Quarter Horse. My husband and I visited because we had some free time in Amarillo. Think of it as a temple to the quarter horse-beautiful building, great interactive interpretive exhibits, lots of history, beautiful art and a good gift shop. I loved every minute and my husband said as we left, "I never would have gone there on my own but I really enjoyed it and I'm glad we did this."

Don't miss it!

By Steven H |

Always relaxing and enjoyable, AQHA greets visitors warmly. The facility is one of the most peaceful places in town, and features many exhibits reflective of Quarterhorse history. Amarillo doesn't deserve a place this nice.

By marycg |

Enjoyed a couple of hours looking and reading about the history of the American Quarter Horse. Building was beautiful and museum was full of interesting facts.

By Ronnie M |

Visited this Heritage Center and although I am not very knowledgeable about quarter horses, I still found it to be an interesting visit.

By Ellen D |

We used to own quarter horses so it was a wonderful trip and to learn about the new technologies along with the history was great

By ned4me |

For the horse lover this place is superb, but I can see it appealing to anyone if you like to learn about history. We only stayed about an hour looking at the artwork & reading the historical information. The gift shop was a typical over-priced museum gift shop but it was neat and arranged nicely. I would not recommend this location for young children as there isn't much to do other than look and read, but adults / teens should enjoy it.

By Brian V |

This place was a fun place to visit. We went during a recent open house and enjoyed it. There isn't too much for young kids and the whole center could be walked in an hour, even with kids. The open house was free, which is nice because to me the normal tickets are beyond what I'd expect to pay for such a small exhibit.

By HeatIsOnII |

If you are a horse enthusiast it's great n even if not the history of this magnificent animal is ver detailed and some of the old photographs leave you amazed.

By 261foodie |

a fun family place - small but good short film and things for kids to see and do without spending a lot of money

By The Jackalope Man |

I didn't know quarter horse people had put up so much money to build such a beautiful facility. Most major cities would be happy to host this place. It's obviously only for a narrow slice of the population.

By sandyaqh |

The Hall of Fame and Museum offers the history of America's breed, the American Quarter Horse through artifacts and a world history time-line. The American Quarter Horse is the largest breed registry in the world, with over 8 million horses in their data base. See works of art offered by famous western artists, as well as engage in learning experiences through interactive displays. There are life-size bronzes by some of America's greatest sculptors! Don't miss the opportunity to walk through history with the American Quarter Horse.

By William J |

This was our first time to view the museum and had heard a lot about it. The building is beautiful and well staged. We were disappointed that it did not contain more history and information on the horses.

By Jay Lankford |

We enjoyed a quiet, but thorough visit at the Quarterhorse museum along with the Buffalo Soldier exhibit as it pertains to their use of the Quarterhorse breed.

By dalichandler |

Very interesting. All the horse displays are worth the visit.

By Galee78 |

Expected to see more horse statues than saddles otherwise displays were interesting.

By Louis F |

Cool museum shedding light on a literal workhorse that helped build the country. There is a lot of cool memorabilia and history on display.

By bearnstar |

A lot of history. Nice interactive area for kids to learn about the American Quarter Horse care and history. The 2nd level has hundreds of pictures and stories. A little too much reading and kids would be bored out of their minds. Bottom floor is worth the $5 admission.

By Joanna F |

Wow! If you are into horses, no matter how much, this is your place! From the moment you step in, you are a part of horse heaven. The entrance hall is so grand...on the floor, carved in stone, is a tree of the entire quarter horse blood line. These are names that stick in your memory, like Steel Dust. Imagine that! Steel Dust for a name.

Detailed history of the quarter horse, a mighty horse in all its right.
Also there are things for the kids to do, like learning about different parts of the horse, how to ride a horse, and several movies that I stopped to watch. You must go!

By Double D |

Cool place to hang out for a while. Young kids might get bored, but there is a lot of information and displays for adults.

By MJSwanson1022 |

We chanced upon the AQH Hertitage Museum by accident. What a gem! The building is beautiful, the staff wonderful, and so much interesting information. We only spent an house, but wished we'd had the whole day! Highly recommended!

By Barbara S |

I enjoy horses, but my daughter LOVES horses! Not only does the museum offer excitement to the horse expert, but it has exhibits for children, and a timeline of historical events to give context to each famous racehorse. Additionally, there is an art museum. Very interesting.

By s w |

We stopped in Amarillo TX on our way to Vegas. Visited this museum and it was very educational plus informative. Whether you have a love of horses or not still a great place to visit

By Brenda K |

I love horses, but my breed is Arabians. This museum was interesting. If I I knew more about the history of the breed, I would have appreciated it more. There is an especially good educational section about horses and their care in general which would be useful to children.

By Paul T |

There's lots of different things to look at in there. From the history of the quarter horse to the anatomy of the horse. Well worth seeing it, especially for the price.

By alphawolfie |

This is the story of the quarter horse. The lower level has a diagram showing the start of the quarter horse by sires. There is a rotating exhibit on the lower level and when we were there it was for the Charro cowboys and girls. Charro is the Mexican and South American cowboys. Displays were well thought out, interesting, and explanations were easy to follow. Then the children's part is behind the rotating exhibits. Children have interactive exhibits. But the upstairs really shows the development of the quarter horse. It is sectioned off into years and each section shows people and horses that influenced the years it covers. Really interesting to see when Star Trek was first on television and the horses that were winning big at the same time.

By OleMissTexas |

This is a great museum for horse lovers. The exhibits and art are very well done. The only drawback was that they concentrated the majority of the Museum to professional racing side of the quarter horse legacy. They had some, but very little content on how the working quarter horse had a major impact in America, the impact in rodeos, etc…

By Ray M |

Any one into horses will want to stop here for sure. Great stop for young and old alike. I never miss this stop when I am in town.

By Ruleena |

The AQHA Museum and Hall of Fame is SO beautiful; I think it is the prettiest bldg in all of Amarillo. The museum is very comprehensive and does a great job walking thru the history of the breed. It is, however, probably a museum for horse enthusiasts as the information is pretty detailed (which is what makes it so great for horse people) and might not be for everyone. Loved the "Hard Work and Horsepower" exhibit. Staff was nice though I was disappointed that they don't have much of a gift shop (items have since moved to the online gift shop). And while i can appreciate the online presence, it doesn't seem like it should come at the sake of actual gift store (again, esp for those horse enthusiasts visiting the AQHA museum for the first time--we are looking for money to burn!).
Tip: Def ask to go next door and visit the AQHA Headquarters. We dropped in unexpectedly and in about ten minutes the staff rounded up someone (pun!) to gie us a tour. The average person would probably be shocked to see how big AQHA business really is; touring their bloodline databases/records and international department was great. If you are a horse person, def take a tour---you'll be super impressed.

By Stephen J |

I'm not a horse person, but I wanted to kill an hour during my business trip and see the sights. It's a small, but nicely furnished museum. There are a couple of educational exhibits for non-horse people like myself, so you can easily spend an hour here. The videos were a bit dated, and could use an update - but I'm assuming they are there for nostalgia. Horse people probably know the old people in them. There is an art gallery inside also for those interested in that. In my opinion, the best time to visit would be when they have a live outdoor demonstration.

By m j |

Interesting history of horses. Great exhibits. Lots of places inside nd out where you can take pictures.

By SharnLW |

This place is an amazing museum and a very inexpensive place to visit. Only $16 for a family of 4. Some websites show they are closed on Saturdays but they are open 9-5. Very interesting horse history for those that love horses as much as we do! This is a must see!!

By Schanuzer |

Grand halls filled with past statesmen and stateswomen memorabilia.
Ostentatious buildings that are quite spectacular, but quite over the top.
We love our Quarter Horses and this is remarkable.

By Morris Weisbart |

It was on my must see list but was a bit of a disappointment. A great deal of time and space was spent on AQHA the organization and people behind it instead of the actual horses that provided the foundation. I really expected more genealogy from the past up to the present but it wasn't there.

By David B |

A great insight into the history of the American Quarter Horse. Well worth a visit.

By Amanda V |

We had a little bit of time to spend while in Amarillo over the weekend and our 8 year old daughter really wanted to go here. We all had a nice time but we were in and out very quickly, definitely weren't inside anywhere near an hour. Also, a lot of what we looked at wasn't quarter horse specific. For what we were wanting, this was a nice stop, but I think I'd have been disappointed had I driven into town just to visit here.

By Marcy M |

Great place to go and learn all about Quarter Horses. Lots of art and pictures. This is a very nice place to visit. They also have a gift shop and sell some really nice clothing there.

By Michael D |

This is a rather large museum. It is very well laid out. Two floors. I went because I have always been a horse lover. On & off throughout my life, I have been involved with horses. This museum ignited a simmering flame within me! If you even just "like" horses, you gotta go! Admission prices are very reasonable. Clean. Large parking area. Part of the displays are set up chronologically. This brought back so many wonderful memories! Go & enjoy!

By joancQ4915FD |

Great museum. Full of information regarding US history that occurred at the same time as Quarter Horses. Interactive displays and gorgeous art depicting the Quarter Horse.

I have been a quarter horse rider for almost 40 years. Having the opportunity to visit the history and heritage of this great American horse was wonderful. You must watch the film about the quarter horse then visit the time lines on the second floor. There is also an area for children to explore with hands on activities. Plan to spend about 2-3 hours if you read all the history.

Grand exhibits honoring hall of fame people and horses. Well-curated to give you context chronologically. Lots of fotos and artifacts. A 10 minute film shows how the horses halter and perform
Be sure to read banner at entrance to main floor exhibit hall — explains the difference between thoroughbred and quarterhorse

Don’t miss the outstanding sculpture pieces on the entrance plaza

I have been to the AQHA museum twice now and have loved it both times. I am a horse person and AQHA member so I was able to recognize a lot of the people and horses in the displays so of course that was fun to go through. My husband knows much less about the breed but he loved it as well. It is an amazing facility, clean, quality displays, overall a great place with a lot of history on a great breed.

This is an absolutely beautiful museum...however...if you know nothing about quarterhorses...this museum probably will be over your head. I had to use my smartphone to find out what the definition of a quarterhorse is. So....for the believers and lovers of the quarterhorse..this is mecca. For those who know nothing..hoping to learn...it assumes a level of knowledge. So...its a great special interest museum. Great for some....not so great for others.

If your into horses this can be a good stop. A lot of history about the breed. Nice gift shop too. The statuary around the building are beautiful.

As you might guess, you will benefit most from a visit to this spot if you are really into Quarter Horses. There's obviously a lot of money in the Quarter Horse enthusiast ranks. Donations to build this were substantial and The Quarter Horse Association is right next door which may have provided the bulk of the funding. They've got 4 million members so membership fees alone generate a huge annual revenue. With that said, you can be assured of a quality visit to a quality facility.

And decided to check out this museum, after all who doesn't like Horses? The outside of the building is impressive with the life size sculptures and the inside was also well structured. There are a lot of horses and owners, trainers honored within the walls. Also a lot about the history of the American quarter horse. I enjoyed my 90 minute visit very much, especially the real chuck wagon display on Exhibit! Well done AQHA!

I am a cattle rancher near Amarillo that uses Quarter Horses in the daily operation of the ranch. I seldom have guest come to Amarillo that I don't take or send them to the AQHA museum and headquarters. It is a very update modern facility that is changed on a regular basis with new and different "stuff". If you are interested in Horses, their history, Western Art, Cowboys this is a "must see" if you are in the Amarillo area. A gift shop, well stocked with Western attire and other gift type items is also worth the time to stop and luck! There are many other attractions in the area such as Palo Duro Canyon, the live play "TEXAS" and the Museum in Canyon, TX (located on the West Texas A&M University campus). Several days should be planned to see and enjoy the sites and fabulous eating places!

This is a unique place and I really don't want to come down on it too hard because I don't think it's really aimed at me. If you have any interest in horses and the history of the Quarterhorse then this is probably a magical place. It is certainly a great celebration of that history. But if you're not into all this then, like me, you're probably being dragged round by your better half.

It was nothing like I expected. It was boring and a big disappointment for us all. My grandson had wanted to go there for such a long time, so we took him last fall and he was bored.

We just stumbled upon this place. The sculptures outside are gorgeous. The art inside is incredible. There are many hands -on displays good for all ages. We especially liked listening to and learning from Doc and Two Bits, the horse. Very inexpensive admission, worth every penny. $6.00/senior

A real gem, was amazed at the time and effort that they had put into this place, very informative, my sister and I spent 2 hrs in there before we had to leave for our next stop on our Route 66 adventure, sure wish we had at least 6 hrs. to spend here as it is a wonderful place to visit and a credit to the people who set it up!!

We got there too early to go inside, but the statues and the outside of the grounds were truly beautiful and well done in their own right. Will come back again for sure

Learning as a child how to ride a horse bareback as a child has always been a wonderful memory-(thank you Kay). So over the years growing up I have always been amazed by the amazing grace of horses. The American Quarter Horse Heritage Center Museum located at 2601 E I-40 in Armarillo, Texas was not on my list of places to stop at while on my trip, BUT I am so glad I did! If you have a love for horses then this is the place to go. The $6 fee for adults is worth it, the AAA discount card or the AARP card takes it to $5. Even if you don't have a love for horses just stopping to see the outside wall is an amazing . The way it has been created, you can just picture the horses running across the open wild. The main hall is massive and constructed beautiful in gold tones,

We thoroughly enjoy horses of any sort, and were excited to be in town to make a short stop here. The statues outside and the main entrance hall are remarkable. There are things for kids and adults to enjoy. Not an all day stop - just an hour or two.

I explored this wonderful piece of Americana with my sister and bro. We covered every inch of what this wonderful museum had to offer. The displays and all the educational information was excellent...A++++ I will always recommend this place to see, especially if you have cowgirl or cowboy in your blood!

Great place to learn about the American Quarter Horse. Awesome displays! Great hands on for kids and fabulous art. Loved seeing all the tack and history!

I wish we had more time as we were travelling through with horses. Lots of information to read. Fascinating if you own a Quarter Horse and know its breeding.

Nice place to unwind and visit with the family. Adults, older kids, and even little kids have a place to learn about horses, cowboys, and history and have some fun. Only takes about 1-2 hours to get through the exhibit.

Just came from there. Not well done. Most of it would be of interest to avid quarter-horse folks who want to see some famous saddle or read about their favorite jockey. There was a "newbies" section, which was the best part, but it was a small part overall. Many pictures and horse-related items on display, but how many saddles or spurs or neckerchieves or cowboy hats do you want to see?

And do not waste your money on the audio tour. There were like 5-6 indications to use it, and most are just an overview of what you are about to see. Very shallow, very little information. Waste of $10 for the two of us.

I was really hoping it would be an interesting, informative look and education into quarter horses, but it wasn't to be. I can not recommend it in its current state.

I did learn what "quarter" means, in this context....but I could have Googled that for free.

Take time to visit this museum just off the interstate. Very well presented for those of us that know little about horses. We enjoyed looking around and talking with the cowboys in the corral.

There is much to see and learn from in this museum. The memorabilia and museum display pieces were quite numerous and significant for the quarter horse and American West enthusiast. There are interactive activities for kids and adults. Take your spurs off at the door, and enjoy!

Great museum to see the history of the Quarter Horse and Ranches who were & are involved making them what they are today. I read about my horses ancestries and some trainers I knew of. I knew of the stallions and mares but mostly off my horse’s papers. To see them in pictures in a museum with their achievements is truly heartwarming.
If you love horses, especially Quarter Hoses, go visit the museum.
