Fun tunnel experience

By Lisa H |

The tunnel is an interesting experience. You drive about 10 minutes or so on the train tracks to the small town of Whittier. The history of the tunnel and town are interesting - built during the war. It's one-way at the top and bottom of the hour. Check website for times.

Weird but a great thing to say we had done

By Trusstytraveller |

The tunnel into Whittier is one way and you need to wait to go through when the change over occurs. The tunnel is long and tight to drive along but a great experience.

A GREAT PART OF THE "WHITTIER EXPERIENCE"

By YukonBillSusan |

Make sure you plan ahead. This wonderful tunnel only goes in one direction at a time. It switches direction every half hour so you need to make sure you leave enough time if you have reservations for a tour or dinner. It like waiting for a ferry as cars line up while waiting and people mingle about chatting with each other.

An experience

By DMann |

One way in and one way out for $13 per car. It was unique, but know that it is a railroad tunnel and trains have priorities. Nice experience but it takes time so plan accordingly.

Interesting

By tjo |

One lane tunnel shared by Alaska Railroad, and two way traffic! Plan your arrival carefully! Great views on the way to and from Whittier!

fun in a tunnel

By jody m |

only way into Whittier its a blast to travel through set your camera on the dash in the vedio mpod and injoy the rocks and ice formations.

Getting REALLY away from the criwds

By Denalihalibut |

Interesting adventure.. who drives through a mountain on a railroad track?šŸ˜‚it was an adventure! Portage Lake with real BIG icebergs on the Bear Valley side & Prince Willam Sound & Whittier in the opposite side! AMAZING!

very quaint ride

By markopolo57 |

Its a single direction tunnel that motor vehicles and trains use to get to Whittier. Though a long slow drive, the traffic pattern is well organized at 30 minute intervals. It was in a way eerie to follow a train into the tunnel. Not many places in the world offer this experience.

Unique experience

By Cindy C |

Seeing this unique one-lane train/car tunnel and learning about Whittier was well worth the side trip. We would have liked to have explored Whittier more, but it was pouring rain during our visit and we had miles left to go that day.

Most interesting

By George R |

The most interesting tunnel I have ever driven through. I heard that it makes some people claustrophobic. I can see how but still very cool.

A very long tunnel

By CaliforniaHiker_9 |

The tunnel is the only way for the Alaska Railroad and for car and trucks to go to Whittier. It is one lane wide. It seems endless to travel the 2.5 miles, but it actually only takes 5 minutes each way. It is important to check the schedule or you have a very long wait for your turn.

Cool Experience + Visit to Whittier

By GRZ |

If you are driving from Anchorage or Girdwood towards Seward or Homer, you will end up passing this area - considering it takes a moment to go through the scheduled traffic + you want to check out Whittier I would combine it with something else on the road as otherwise it's just not enough time during the day to do it right.

The tunnel was $13 round trip (you only pay towards Whittier, on the way back you just line up and go).

Check the schedule for summer vs winter - basically each side, in summer, runs every hour - so plan accordingly and don't waste time in the line - it's pricey but for passenger cars it's just that $13 so totally worth it + the experience is pretty unique, no need to book in advance, you just show up and pay on the spot

There is not that much going on in Whittier but it's pretty scenic town, with good food + the tunnel drive is a decent "package"

The lines are for each classes so they will tell you on the spot also which one to take

TIP: trains cause some delays as after the ride 15m is needed to vent it, so don't arrive here tight on time

An Adventure Towards my Adventure

By Grammygoz |

To get to my 26 Glacier Cruise with Phillip's, the tunnel provided passage to the port town of Whittier. I was nervous about the process, but it was nothing to be concerned about. We arrived to the booth, paid $13 (included return fee), was directed to a specific lane to wait, and given specific written instructions. There were even clean restrooms available during the wait. I'm not a fan of tunnels, since my experience normally involved NC & Tenn. mountain tunnels, surrounded by 18 wheelers, traveling 55+ mph. This was totally different. The limit was 25 mph, single car line, with no "tail gating". The 2.5 mile tunnel was a good adventure!

The only way to get to Whittier by land

By johnbuoy1 |

Take the same tunnel used by trains to get to and from Whittier. We went there in mid-October and unfortunately it was rainy so long distance viewing of anything was limited.
However, we did take the time while waiting for our turn to travel through the tunnel to take pictures of the mountains and numerous waterfalls that surrounded it. Once you enter the 2-1/2 mile tunnel you'll know when you're near the end because guess what you'll see...the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. Whittier located at the head of the Passage Canal that leads to Prince William Sound. The town proper isn't very big, maybe 200 - 300 people, but because of it's size nearly everything, and I mean nearly everything is located within a 1/2 mile square.

Fascinating

By Rosario_it |

We had a cruise in Prince William Sound and in order to reach Whittier we had to take this tunnel.
The tunnel is one way in an alternate way so you need to wait till it is your turn.
The only downside is that you need to pay to go through the tunnel.
Anyway, there are no other way to reach Whittier by car.

Best Adrenaline Heart Pounding Tunnel Drive

By Luv2hikejulie |

If you are driving this is the only way into and out of Whittier. Because this is a multiuse single lane tunnel they only release traffic in each direction at specific times. Check their website for times. The multiuse part of this is that it is also used by the train. It is the longest tunnel in North America at nearly two miles long.

After paying the toll you are queued up into 6 lanes which they release one at a time once your side is released. They give instructions on spacing between vehicles, max speed, and what to do if there should be an emergency in the tunnel. How exciting.

Remarkable Engineering

By Xanerin |

What an incredible piece of engineering and a very necessary attribute to the transportation industry. This tunnel takes both rail and vehicles - very clever build.

World's longest highway tunnel travels through a mountain!

By YvonneR496 |

I wasn't super excited about going through this tunnel to get to a Glacier boat tour, I can get claustrophobic in tight places. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and despite what I have read in other reviews, I thought it was well lighted. Much better than the pitch black tunnels you go through on the narrow gauge railroad. The history of this tunnel alone is worth going through it, and it is the longest through a mountain at 2.5 miles. It is very narrow but we were on a tour bus and it wasn't bad at all. It is pretty amazing that this is the only way into Whittier by land and that they saved millions by using it for vehicles and trains. The engineering is something to see and you won't see another tunnel quite like this.

Whittier Tunnel

By Barbara S |

Plan ahead. The tunnel goes only one way so going toward Anchorage and one way toward Whittier. At times, you have to wait for the train to go through. It's about 2 miles, maybe a bit more. A bit dark, but not impossible. And it feels smaller than it really is. A unique experience, and you can't get to Whittier without going through this tunnel. Very organized and clear instructions.

drive through a mountain

By JBArvidson |

I've been traveling through this mountain for over 30 years. Time to write a review. This was a train tunnel. It was built during WWII. Throughout my childhood the only way to get to Whittier was to ride the train. Then they updated the tunnel. Now it has been widened and you can drive it. But it is still narrow and just one lane. So they open it one way at a time. On the half hour you can drive towards whittier. On the hour you can drive the opposite. It is two miles, one lane. It is an experience. Longest single lane tunnel in North America. 13 dollar toll is worth the experience.

Day trip from Anchorage....

By wing6rider |

We set out to visit Whittier and discovered the tunnel. This was a neat experience and compared to a long canal boat tunnel we went through last year in the UK. Certainly a highlight. YMMV

Interesting tunnel crossing

By Kay C |

The main way to get to Whittier is the tunnel. It's the longest shared railroad and car tunnel. One way only so you should plan ahead if you are on a time schedule.

Different experience

By STAN49_12 |

A multi use tunnel for trains, cars, busses and trucks. There is only one way out of Whittier and it is through this tunnel. It is only single track so make sure you allow waiting time in your travel plans. We left from Whittier early in the morning and everything was a breeze, but coming back in the afternoon was a different picture. We had to line up with many other vehicles and wait our turn. We did not have to wait too long though before it was our turn. There is only a $13.00 toll when going in to Whittier - none coming out.

This is an interesting tunnel

By wolfcreek850 |

The history regarding this tunnel is very interesting. Look up on the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel website for the times that autos are allowed to go through the tunnel. They stay on schedule.

interesting town

By Ann L |

Such an interesting town with this one way tunnel that has a schedule time, if you could not make it.. you're going to get the next scheduled tunnel time

Interesting

By DPNA |

Road/ rail through the mountain. Only way in or out Whittier by auto or train. One lane. One way traffic every 30 minutes. 2 1/2 mile long.

Interesting

By Donna E |

Very cool tunnel to get the town of Whittier. Definitely an experience. The tunnel is about 3 miles long and is timed. You can only go through certain times depending on whether you are entering or leaving town.

tunnel

By Philipjay |

The tunnel is really cool. Get there early since it is a one way affair! The engineering of the tunnel is amazing and safety is not an issue.

Time It Right

By Shannon M |

Be sure to time yourself right, otherwise you could be missing out. Allow some extra time for parking, with the boats going in and out it can be pretty packed and they local police are pretty quick to hand out a parking ticket. If you get cloister phobic just close your eyes .. there is light (& fog) at the end of the tunnel.

Hole in the mountain

By Nicholas K |

Cool tunnel. one of a kind in my opinion. it is amazing to see what kind of feats could be accomplished with the technology they had at the time. not happy it cost $13 to go through it as it is the only way in or out of Whittier AK

It's a tunnel, but still pretty cool

By 415Cyclist |

It's a tunnel. Not must different than most others, except it's one way and has train tracks down the middle. Inbound to Whittier bottom of the hour, outbound from top of the hour.

Town is very small. I drove around town, visited the museum and checked out a few things within 1.5 hours. Didn't feel rushed. I'd suggest spend another hour, consider lunch at the cafe near the museum, then maybe a walk around town, then catch the next outbound tunnel trip.

This was a day trip from Anchorage. Beautiful drive, well worth the drive and visit to this small but active town.

Unique Driving Experience.

By MRRomanSC |

One lane tunnel which reverses directions on the half hour. You drive on the railroad tracks which are shared by active trains. If you have the luck of being there when a freight train is going through as we did it can be a looong wait. (Bring snack and water LOL). It also throws the reversing schedule off so may have to wait an additional hour.

A Passage to Whittier

By Jimmer22 |

The tunnel is a engineering marvel in that traffic is followed by a train. Well maintained and an interesting experience.

Cool way to get to Whittier

By theresaw |

We enjoyed stopping our car and waiting to enter the tunnel which has only 1 way, so make sure you time it correctly depending on which direction you're headed. Loved how everyone was out of their car talking to each other. Fun experience

Plan ahead

By Karledwards123 |

The tunnel has specific hours of operation and direction of traffic flow. make sure you research when it is open so that you are needlessly waiting to get through. it cost 13.00 per vehicle for a round trip

Tight tunnel

By Usia2014 |

This is a single lane tunnel in Whittier, Alaska that changes direction every half hour. It also has trains going through it as well as cars and buses. We went through it in a bus heading to the port. It was interesting and an engineering accomplishment. But, it felt rather claustrophobic because it was very tight being that close to the walls. Couldn't wait to get out of it really. But, glad we had the chance to experience it.

Spokey but adequate

By Karen M |

This is a one-way tunnel. Go into Whittier on the half hour, out on the hour, the train uses the same tunnel. Cars straddle the tracks. Dark but there are lights.

Almost a trip of its own

By JPG1944 |

To get to Whittier you have to travel through this one way tunnel for 2 1/2 miles. The vehicles go through at specific times each way because the tunnel is shared with the Alaska Railroad

Interesting experience !

By PaulAK2011 |

The combo rail and car tunnel is one of the longest in the world . The staggered directional use seems to work well with to Whittier on half hour and to Portage on hour. Trains will disrupt this at times

WOW!!!

By patilajolla |

This tunnel was amazing!!!!! It seems to go forever and is rough, like they have just finished blasting through. To go to Whittier, you start on the half hour and when returning, it is on the hour. If you are lucky, you will also see the train come through the same tunnel..Regretfully though absolutely everything was closed when we went through. I guess they had just closed for the season.

A unique experience

By Carribeantraveler52 |

This is a 2.5 mile single lane tunnel shared with the railroad. What a job it must have been to bore through that mountain. It is built to withstand high winds, cold temperature and earthquakes.

Most fascinating tunnel ever

By William B |

We experienced this car/train tunnel while on the ARR Glacier Discovery train. Leave it to Alaskans to make the best use of available resources. Try to see it from the dome car perspective if possible.

first time

By jeezweez |

only way to drive in, pretty cool, longest tunnel I've been in, 13.00 to enter, free to leave through, only large enough for one car width, train tracks are what you drive on, have to time your trip right as going in on top of hour, leaving whittier on the half hour

What a difference time makes

By geraldmf |

Years ago you had to ride the Alaska Railroad flat cars into and out of Whittier.
Now you just drive thru the tunnel in your own car.

Cool-ish

By Cori S |

The tune was cool, it cost $13 to drive through and back. Not much going on in Whittier in April. We ate at Whittier Inn and the food and service were great.

When in Whittier, go through the tunnel.

By Eric T |

the is special because it only goes one direction. The direction changes every half hour. It is also a railroad tunnel as well, so when it comes traffic stops. The town of Whittier is not much to see. The tunnel is the best part of the town.

Cool!

By aat226 |

The tunnel wall made with stone, I think it's from the mountain, it's about 2 miles long, but it's interesting to see, It's only one way access, it run every 30mins each way. While you stop waiting, the mountain and Glacier view is incredible. It definitely worth pay $13.00 to get through the tunnel, the tunnel itself already was an attraction!

A real experience

By Anthony W |

This tunnel is one of those once in a lifetime experiences that takes you to somewhere you really do not expect - a town where all most the whole population live in a single building. Well worth the effort. The area has some interesting small coves worth visiting at low tide.

Only way to get to Whittier

By Nocke |

Off the Seward Highway the Tunnel is the only way to get to Whittier. Be sure to check the times when the tunnel will be open to travel in the direction you wish to go. The tunnel is one lane so at any one time cars go only in one direction. There is also a train that shares this space. So check the web site for the times. The system is regularized but expect to wait 15 minutes or so.

Amazing Engineering feat!

By karensSouthernIN |

This is the 2nd longest tunnel in No America and THE longest railway/highway tunnel in No America! It's pretty amazing and cool to drive thru. There are 8 safe rooms built into the tunnel in case of emergency. It took like 8-9 min to drive thru. Be prepared to wait as they have to allow traffic in 2 directions to go thru as well as the Alaska Railroad. There is a cost involved. We paid $22 for our RV. We drove to Whittier so we could check out the tunnel as well as Whittier--not much in Whittier. Mostly just a cruise port with shore excursion companies.

Must see

By Melody G |

Although the tunnel is a short ride I feel like it is a must see. The story for Whittier is pretty interesting and I think if you are in the area this has to be a stop. On land there is only one way in to the small town and it's through this tunnel. The gates close at 11 pm so if you are not on the side of the tunnel you want to be, you are there until the next day. The town is like something from a movie. Anytime we have family visiting we take them to Whittier.

Pretty Amazing Tunnel

By Cassandra |

This is really a neat idea. All transportation using the same tunnel. It's a one way timed tunnel. 2.4 miles long at 25 mph, solid rock that even the train uses. The only other route to Whittier is airplane or boat. Neat experience, the tiny town is scenic as well

Cool experience

By Ann Stone |

When do you ever have the chance to drive 15 minutes on the railroad tracks? This tunnel is great fun. It is well lighted and smooth. It was like a ride at Disney

Fun and interesting - and the only way to get to Whittier by land

By Lori T |

I must start by saying I have ridden the Eurostar train through the 31-mile Chunnel that runs beneath the English Channel connecting England and France, so the 2.5-mile Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel into Whittier was small in comparison. Nonetheless, it was a fun and interesting experience, and I would welcome the opportunity to do it again. We went through the tunnel on the Alaska Railroad - a 5-star ride I recommend to everyone. When we arrived at the tunnel, the train had to stop for a few minutes to get clearance to proceed since the tunnel is shared with motor vehicles. This is the only route into Whittier by land, and the tunnel is closed 10 pm - 7 am, so using it requires some planning.

Historical Tunnel

By Lisa C |

It is a long, very long, tunnel with history behind it. Go to the museum, listen to your guide, or just look it up yourself. It is interesting, will make you look at it. Seriously look at the tunnel, not just go through it.

Interesting drive through a mountain

By Victor N M |

Make sure to plan your trip ahead if you leave late in the evening as the tunnel closes and you can get stuck in Whittier if you dont plan ahead. Its an interesting drive through the mountain to see all of the rock carved away to have access by land to Whittier.

Nice Excursion

By Speedbump555 |

A very scenic drive from Anchorage--less than two hours. The one way tunnel to Whitter is 4km long. Be sure to visit the Prince-William Sound museum.

Only way into Whittier?!

By JulieWhit |

We had no idea that we would be paying to enter such a small desolate place, but ended up enjoying talking to locals at the harbor. The tunnel itself was kind of creepy, all I could think about were rocks falling while we were inside.

Unique Piece of History

By NJ2SC |

My husband and I took the tunnel to drive from Anchorage to Girdwood. It is an 8 minute car ride to drive through the tunnel. The tunnel coordinators run a tight ship as they are very timely. So make sure that you arrive on time, or you will need to wait an hour before you are allowed to pass through the tunnel. The traffic at the bottom half of the hour travels to Whittier while the traffic on the hour travels to Anchorage. The train travels on the quarter and ¾ of the hour. There are huge fans strategically placed in the tunnel to blow out all of the exhaust. The cost is $13 per vehicle for the round trip passage. While you are driving through the tunnel, enjoy the trip and take note of this unique feat of engineering and the history behind this tunnel.

Kinda cool experience

By TJLandof10000lakes |

Fun to say I drove through the longest tunnel in the US!
It was an interesting experience. I wasn’t sure what a 2.5 mile, 6 minute drive through a tunnel with a railroad track running through it would feel like. It went pretty fast and no issues. It was fun to see a train go through it, too.
I got there 20 minutes before the scheduled tunnel transit time, this worked well for early June when Alaska is not that crowded.

One way and narrow

By ArizonaReadytogo |

One way which changes direction at intervals. Narrow, just wide enough for a train. About 3 miles and 6 minutes at 25 mph max. Only land route in and out of the small town of Whittier AK. A $12 toll to go to Whittier and return. We went early for a cruise and had only a few vehicles in line. We ate some dinner in Whittier before we returned to we avoided all the vehicles associated with the cruise.

Great

By Pioneer829001 |

Safety is the first priority over here. Strict speed limits. Cash and Credit card is usable here for the pass.

one way tunnel might take half hour for shuttle to get to go through

By turtlesrus0 |

The tunnel only allows traffic one way. Every half hour, they switch which side of the tunnel gets to enter and drive through. We had an an informative shuttle driver, so it did not seem long. We had about a 17 minute wait.

A historic tunnel

By W W |

Arrived in Whittier and then onto buses to Anchorage. Traffic can only go one way at a time and the train has priority. Once in the tunnel there are special alcoves complete with survival items, in case of an incident in the tunnel. Buses must stay certain distances apart to ensure everyones safety. This is quite an engineering marvel. Built at the height of the cold war.

"This was a really neat driving experience."

By cphilpot |

This is just a really cool driving experience. Driving to Whittier through the tunnel is an experience of and in itself. It is a great experience just to be able to get to the staging area...get in line and wait your turn to go through the tunnel. Going to Whittier the traffic was able to enter on the half hour...coming back from Whittier the traffic was able to enter the tunnel begining on the hour. The day we traveled a train came through on a Trip from Whittier which delayed our entry by about 10 minutes. Once we entered the tunnel we were on a one lane drive through. There are, I believe, seven fresh air, emergency rooms throughout the tunnel. My husband wanted me to drive to experience it for myself since he had driven it previously. The train tracks make it an interesting drive since one must straddle the tracks. At a slow speed..maximum 25 mph.this is not an issue but one must keep eyes on the tracks. The Engineering creativity of the tunnel is most amazing. The wait in line for the opening of the tunnel gave us the time and the pleasure of viewing the many waterfalls on either side of he tunnel. Whittier is a neat place to visit and very beautiful but the journey to Whittier was almost as entertaining as a ride in an amusement park. The fee to drive through the tunnel round trip for a 4 wheel vehicle was $13.00. Well worth it!

Cute afternoon experience

By AllStarMP |

$13 round trip for the longest tunnel in America. The tunnel is a narrow one way road, so plan accordingly. You get to go to Whittier on the :30s of each hour (be in line by :20 of whatever hour), conversely you leave Whittier at the top of each hour (again be in line 10 minutes before the top of the hour).

The tunnel is about 6.5 minutes I drive time, really tight and rocky inside.

The town is a very small cute fishing town. Beautiful colorful waters from the glacier run off. Handful of cute shops and restaurants open during summer season. 2 nice waterfalls and rivers to check out up on the mountain. You can also check out an old large abandoned military building on the edge of town.

Spooky, but cool!

By Leslie |

Grateful it's in such good shape and runs on schedule. Kinda cool to travel through a 2 mile tunnel!

how else do you get into Whittier by land, lol

By Mobile638786 |

crazy-cool, but expect to wait for all the differnet lanes of traffic AND types of traffic, road/tunnel is shared with the RR.. just hoping no ones cloustrophobic, it IS a tight squeeze in there

Quite the experience to drive in a one-way tunnel shared with trains

By BHorst |

This is a one way tunnel used by vehicles from Anchorage on the half hour, vehicles from Whittier on the hour and used by the Alaskan Railway in between!

You have to pay going into Whittier, which includes your trip back out. You line up in lnes like a ferry and stay a couple car lengths apart while driving through at 25 MPH or less.

It takes some planning and you'll need to wait your turn but a unique experience for sure. It's quite long and sort of eerie driving through it.
In the way out of Whittier we were in lots of time for the 6:00 p.m. tunnel opening but had to wait 15 minutes for the train to come through.

A must do while in Alaska

By golfintazz |

This was a great experience going through this tunnel - since it is the only 'land' access way to get to Whitter. It is a shared passage withe the train - so you may have to wait your turn - but fun.

2.5 Miles of Amazing Construction Feat

By Bob S |

Cost of $13.00 for passing through and back is the only way to drive into the Town of Whittier. Straddling the railroad track you ride though the tunnel - love the minute you get through to the other side as the world opens back up !

Taking the Tunnel

By RaeAnne H |

Small long tunnel for access to Whittier. Plan your trips accordingly to not have to wait long for the direction of travel you are going, as this tunnel is one-way traffic only while splitting the time with the train.

Fast Tunnel Trip

By Akfotoman |

While there were 6 lanes full of traffic into the tunnel the trip was fast and orderly. Once leaving the tunnel there are bathrooms along the road and gravel roads to the beach and bay.

A unique experience through the tunnel

By vatchr |

What a fun adventure going through the tunnel. We did our research and planned accordingly to not have to wait too long in either direction. We went through to visit Whittier and spent about two hours in Whittier for lunch and walking around. The drive through the tunnel twice was a unique experience, especially with the one lane and the train tracks.

Best tunnel in Alaska

By Candie G |

This tunnel is stunning with beautiful rock walls and railroad tracks in the road. It's a pretty good bargain to get thru to the other side as hiking over seemed a little more than we could handle in the dense fog and pouring rain. We will definitely use this tunnel on our next trip to Whittier!

Not very on time but a cool tunnel

By Angelia B |

There is a schedule that they say they go on, but both times we went through, they were late. On the way there, they go on the half hour. We didn't go through until 20 minutes late. On the way back, they go on the hour and since a train was coming, we waited for an extra 20 minutes. If you are trying to get to a tour or something, give lots of extra time. But the drive through the tunnel was pretty neat and an experience.

Fun to go through

By Mturner1004 |

It is so much fun to say you went through the longest tunnel in North America, It takes about 7-8 minutes to get through it.

Unique experience

By Deborah G |

We had planned to go through the tunnel for the unique experience. We'd certainly never been through a one way tunnel that is shared between automobiles and a train! It was worth the $13 to experience it. We had planned to hike on the portage pass trail while we were in Whittier, but we were advised against doing this when we stopped at the Begich-Boggs visitor center. Too much snow blocking the trail. So, we went to the town of Whittier and walked around. Seemed very dismal and depressing to us. Maybe party due to the day being gloomy and cloudy. We didn't feel like being there long. So, off we went to get in line to go back through the tunnel.

Amazing!

By coco122815 |

Take the time to do go through this amazing tunnel - our odometer had 2.7 miles at the end - amazing experience to see the work that went into this tunnel back in the 1940's. The $13 fee is a round trip fee.

Great tunnel experience

By I_Like_Cats_12 |

Great to see the longest tunnel in North America. It is a single lane tunnel where trains and traffic take turns. So be prepared to wait. It is $13 to go in and free on the way out.

Not necessary!

By Jill |

We decided to do this since it was such a unique tunnel experience. Not sure I would recommend it to others though. You wait in line, as the tunnel only opens once an hour for each direction. It's a shared tunnel with the rail, so there are also train tracks in this narrow one-lane tunnel. The issue is, once you get to Whittier, there's really nothing to do unless you're getting on a cruise. Read up about Whittier to understand the very interesting way of life in this town.

A weird tunnel!

By BarryH |

The tunnel was my reason for visiting Whittier. It's a 1 lane tunnel shared by cars, trucks, and trains! I had never driven on train tracks before nor had I ever gone trough a tunnel that changes direction every half hour.

It's only a tunnel . . . . .

By B-HNL |

But very different to your usual road tunnels. Abiding to the 25 mph speed limit it takes between 7-8 minutes to pass through this very rare joint road & rail tunnel from Portage to Whittier. As this is a single lane operation this is only open for 15 minutes in each direction, oh and of course the Alaska Railroad passes through as well. This was one of the things I wanted to tick on my Alaska bucket list.

Cool experience

By Expedition471861 |

Make sure you get the schedule ahead of time experience was well worth the time we waited. It’s the only way into Whittier so I definitely need to use the tunnel if you’re going to get there by any means of a vehicle other than a boat.

Starnge but fun experience

By Bigcityeater |

We wanted to visit Whittier and this is one of the few ways to do so. The key is o know the details. Traffic going into the town leaves at half past the hour and cost $13. No cost coming back but traffic leaves at the top of the hour.

Great idea

By Carlos |

One clever idea to share this tunnel since it does not have a lot of traffic. It saved a ton of dollars!

Long tunnel- pretty cool

By Shelly G |

This is a two mile long tunnel that cars go through coming to town on the half hour and leaving town on the hour.

Oh so squeezy

By JanetteE59 |

The only way out of Whittier by road. Drove through in our rental car this trip, much better than doing it in a big tour bus where you can’t see anything out your window. I took a video on my phone going through while hubby drove. Was able to see all the stone inside the tunnel and all the bunkers along the way.

We went through straight off the Aurora ferry from Valdez and as the ferry didn’t have too many vehicles on board we had no issues getting straight through the tunnel with minimal waiting.

Long narrow tunnel

By SDAnnie |

You have to travel through this long narrow tunnel if you want to go to Whittier by land. You pay about $13, if I remember correctly, going into Whittier, but no fee to leave. We did not wait very long either time. Cars can only travel in one direction at a time. Kind of claustrophobic if you don't like caves. Very interesting engineering.

Oh wow!

By Pam B |

This really long tunnel was quite a feat of engineering. Its length rivals the tunnels in South Korea, but this tunnel is shared between rail and vehicle traffic and is not so flashily decked out on the inside as the Asian counterparts. It was worth the toll to see Whittier town at the other end. There are nice restaurants and lodging in Whittier, so you need not return the same day.

Interesting setup

By Elizabeth J |

Passed through this tunnel while on the train from Ancourage to Whittier. Couldn't really see much but was interesting as it was shared by cars (alternating).
While I did not have any delays, something to consider if you are meeting a cruise - it can be shut down temporarily due to problems. there were many cruisers that were delayedabout 3 hours on the other side while a boulder was cleared from the tracks. They almost missed their cruise.

Unique Engineering for a tunnel

By EricLovesToTravel |

This tunnel is the only way in and out of Whittier by train or road. The tunnel is a single lane one direction combination road and train track. Depending on the time of day - either cars or trains use it into or out of Whittier.

Driving through the tunnel to Whittier

By zümi |

To drive to Whittier (Alaska), you have to take the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, which is basically a railway tunnel used by trains and cars.
After you pay 13 USD (one round trip) at gates, you are directed to the waiting lanes where you wait until the departure time is up. Then you move on and can enter the tunnel on green light. You enter via a huge building-gate built against the mountain and you drive on the rails as the lane is single and narrow. The allowed speed is 25 MPH and you have to watch out for cars in front of you. The walls inside are rocky and damp with about 8 safe stations (for emergency situations).
It takes about 20 mins to cross the longest North American tunnel (2.5 miles). The schedule is every 30 mins, later every hour. You exit few miles outside of Whittier village. If you miss the last return time, you have to wait till morning opening.
It is an interesting drive and to see the inside of a railway tunnel makes even exciting.

Very interesting

By kansas046 |

This is in itself worth the trip, an old railroad tunnel made accessible for cars, one way 2. 1/2 miles long.

Creepy but cool!

By Sneakers23 |

Driving from Anchorage to Whittier made the tunnel just in time - pay a round trip fee ($13 I think for cars). Driving through was eerie as it is so long and so damp. Water just drips and runs down the side of the rock walls - no concrete walls here - raw mountain! 25mph - don't speed the Whittier cops pulled people over while we were coming and going.

Fun to drive through

By Jeannie H |

If you want to go to Whittier, you have to go
through the tunnel. Price is a little steep, $13 round trip, so I wouldn't pay it just to see the tunnel. But, if you want to go to Whittier, the tunnel is unique. You can leave Whittier on the hour or enter Whittier on the half hour.

Unique experience

By susanvera |

If you're going to visit Whitter, I recommend reading "The Strangest Little Town in Alaska". It's a great book about the history of Whittier, the first explorers and how they tried to find an overland route and why the Whittier tunnel was built.

Can't imagine driving anything larger than an SUV through it.

By Vger1701 |

This is the way to get into Whittier unless you come by water. One way traffic which changes on the half hour. Its a long narrow tunnel and imo an enginnering marvel. Not good for people who don't like enclosed spaces as the tunnel is over 2 miles long if I remember correctly.

Nothing like this in florida

Just added to the trip.and a bonus we embed up in Whittier where we had a great lunch.got to see great scenery to

Unique train/car tunnel

By Tom-WCT |

This is the only way to enter Whittier by car. It costs $ 13 to enter, no cost when leaving Whittier. The tunnel is 2.5 miles long and has railroad tracks as the Alaskan RR travels through the tunnel. Cars line up in a staging area outside the tunnel. There are scheduled times for cars to enter the tunnel from each direction as the tunnel is only one lane. You drive over the RR tracks (a little to the left or right of the rails). There are a few pullouts in the tunnel for emergencies as there is not enough room in the lane to turn around. It is a very unique experience to drive through the tunnel.

Tunnel Vision

By Shaine S |

It was rainy in Anchorage so we decided to road-trip to Whittier via this tunnel. It was originally built to service military needs, and once in Whittier you can see the giant abandoned barracks there. The tunnel goes in the half-hour, and out on the hour. You buy your round trip ticket before going through to the Whittier side, and can stay as long as you want but be mindful of the tunnel times and closing times (I think the last one ran at 11:30pm while we were there). You drive single-file through the tall and narrow tunnel, built to accommodate trains! It's quirky activity to do, I guess, but I've never done anything like it anywhere else.

No other option but don’t let it stop you going.

By NA- Australia |

It’s 2.5 miles long under Maynard Mountain. It is a single lane, so in half hour increments- for most of a day, it allows traffic in one direction- excepting of course the trains that also use the same tunnel. $13.00 for a car- return- no one-way tickets.
It’s professionally run and a novel experience

On our way to Phillips Cruise

The tunnel was a another amazing view
Driving through a mountain is now something clicked off the bucket list!

Its a very long tunnel, nothing scary about it

By GolfOcalaFlorida |

We waited about 1/2 hour. It is long, dark but it is nothing scary. No passing traffic, one way traffic. Don't miss the last run or you're in whittier for the night.

Neat single-lane, combined auto and rail tunnel!

By Nicole D |

This is the only way to get to/from Whittier by automobile or railroad. It is a single lane 2.5mile tunnel. Make sure your timing is correct with the schedule or leave plenty of time to wait. Traffic flows each way for 30 mins. Not sure in railroad traffic but check their schedule as well if you have a connection to make or flight to catch in Anchorage!

Unusual road experience

By GoAlong2 |

This tunnel offers the only road into Whittier. It is a single lane that accommodates both cars and trains and switches directions every 30 minutes. Drilled under a mountain for several miles, it is a long straight road with a ceiling high enough to allow a train to pass. A toll is paid at the western end on the way toward Whittier. Check the schedule and arrive about 10 min before the half hour to pay the toll and queue up in the parking area before entering the tunnel at the appointed time. The return trip was on the hour with no toll booth. There is a lake and visitor center with good views and information on your way toward Whittier just before the toll both, so you can come early and enjoy the view before gettin in the tunnel line.

Interesting transportation engineering

By Tony K |

Well if you don’t arrive by boat to Whittier and need to go there you’ll no be driving through the tunnel. They have all kinds of different rates for all vehicles. Big staging area at each end and they tell which lane be in for different types of vehicles. It’s not scary or dangerous as speed limit is 25 mph.

The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, longest highway tunnel in North America

By psudino |

You better time your trip well, because apparently a car can wait up to 30 minutes if ill-timed.

Our Alaska train times its schedule to make sure the trains do not wait.

It's a unique tunnel that is one lane, so the cars need to wait for the switch before they ride the tunnel, over the railroad tracks. It was designed this way to save millions of dollars on construction costs.

Through the tunnel

By T W |

Easier to navigate than I anticipated. It is very organized and simple. We took the ferry to Whittier from Valdez and this was one the our favorite days in Alaska

worth the experience. the only down side was the speeding ticket we got trying to be on time to exit the island

Tunnel to Whittier

By luckyr7063 |

This is an interesting and historic tunnel. I would recommend a drive thru even if you don’t have a need to go to Whittier. Our teens even looked up from their devices:) I would recommend a drive thru have breakfast or lunch at the hotel and a drive around town. Check the Website for tunnel times.

Exciting and unexpected!

By Stacy R |

While inconvenient to only be able to go through at certain times of the day, the construction is fascinating.

Amazing piece of work

By Mark&Rosa |

The tunnel is quite an amazing piece of engineering, built by the US Army during WWII as Whittier was seen as having significant strategic interest to the US. But they needed to get to the town without climbing over the mountain every time, so they built a tunnel, 2 and a bit miles long. Traffic can only go one way, so there is a simple (managed and coordinated) process for tunnel access.

Cool tunnel

By CjW9905 |

What an amazing example or craftsmanship. It's a little in-service to think of how many quakes they have in the area.

Quite an experience

By seaturtelover |

Going through this tunnel takes you for an experience. One way in and one way out. 25 mph is top speed. You drive on the same thing the trains drives on. Yep, it’s narrow and you just can’t wait for the light at the end of the tunnel. Driving through a glacier is pretty awesome though. And the only way to get to Whittier

Neat Experience

By lirwin13 |

There is only one way in and out of Whittier (by car), and the tunnel is it. You have to be there for the 15 minute opening each hour if you want to get through. The toll is $13 going in, free coming back out. The tunnel is shared with the railroad, so you drive the length on top of the tracks. A very neat vacation experience!

ONLY WAY IN AND OUT OF WHITTIER

By sage97 |

A very unique experience. On our way to Glacier Bay. This tunnel is the only way in and out of Whittier. (Which this town is also unique, everyone lives in one building.) It is 2 1/2 miles long and only one lane. It is open to vehicles once an hour. So be certain to be on time, if you miss your opportunity you will have to wait for the next opening. The tunnel is shared with the train. You cannot use it at night.

Very interesting tunnel built in WWII

By Susan T |

I have never ridden through a train/auto tunnel before and it was quite an experience. The tunnel was narrow, but high and traffic goes one way, so you have to plan your arrival time so that you can get through when it's the half hour open for the direction you are traveling.

By IRVING T |

Fanstasic feat of engineering, completed in short time, sharing with train longest tunnel in North Anerica
must see to beleive

Very Cool!

By ANCtoEYW |

For $13 you can get a first-hand look at the longest shared train/car "road" in North America. Whittier is a nice little fishing town, but the gem is the tunnel. You can go into Whittier on the bottom of the hour and can return to the Portage area at the top of the hour. Be prepared to wait a while if there is an incident. Today, we were delayed for an hour and a half for what looked like an overturned semi.

Second time as great as the first!

By Chuck E |

This was such a fun experience the first time that we decided to go back. This time was with our daughter-in-laws' parents from the Czech Republic. They were also facinated with "driving" on train tracks and the timing system for alternating traffic and trains. The waterfalls weren't flowing as fast this time, so there wasn't much to see again in Whittier. We loved our glacier cruise with the in-laws also!

Longest combined vehicle-railroad tunnel in North America

We took the airport shuttle bus from Whittier to Anchorage. Our bus driver shared the history of the tunnel. Interesting history and drive through the 2.5 mile tunnel.

Most Amazing Tunnel ever!!

I love tunnels! This one tops my list of best that I've ever been in. Plus if you visit the local museum you can find out all the history of the engineering marvel of how the tunnel was constructed.

It was very interesting traveling through this tunnel on the Alaska Train from Whittier to Anchorage

Truly Incredible!

By Allan S |

I've never seen this long of a tunnel before nor have I seen one that shares the car tunnel with trains. This is an amazing 2+ mile long tunnel with an amazing history dating back to WWII.

Easy to use

By Travellover196650 |

Cool experience. Only way in and out of Whittier on land. Well organized system with an eye on safety.

Nice experience

By Eltzi |

First time i go thru a single lane tunnel. The tunnel open for a single lane for 15 minutes. You need to get thru it if not have to wait an hour.

Very special road trip

By Traveler_from_Alaska |

How often do you get a chance to drive two miles underground on train tracks to a secret Army base? You can here. I love it!

Cool experience, but watch out for the toll ripoff!

By William W |

This is the only way to get into Whittier by land. The tunnel is one-way; top of the hour allows for travel to Whittier, the bottom of the hour for the return. The toll is based on the number of seats in your vehicle. So if you're going in a van in a group, they don't care if it's 1 person or 12 persons in that van; you're getting charged by the number of available seats (which is complete nonsense). The excuse we got was that they're afraid we'll transport people out from the other side. Really?

Freaky!!

By Kekelley528 |

Decided on a side trip to Whittier... and this required a drive through the longest tunnel in North America... it was freaky because train tracks ran through it as well as a paved area for cars... it was a multi purpose tunnel!! it was very narrow. And dark!
Cost $13 round trip!
Everyone in the car thought it was a cool adventure!!

This was an exciting part of our vacation

By Harry D |

My wife and I needed a different route to get to Valdez. We did not want to travel from Seward back to Anchorage and then to Glennalan and then south to Valdez. We were hesitant at first to drive through this 2 1/2 mile tunnel. However, it was worth putting our fears aside and take it. After we went through and wound up in Whittier, we then boarded the ferry that took us to Valdez. A very relaxing 6+ hour ride. I highly recommend it..

Interesting one-way/railway tunnel about 3.6 miles long

By Jeremy C |

We arrived and paid $10 for a ticket and then joined the carline and waited until the one-way became the otherway and then entered the tunnel.

Loooong tunnel!

By Grammaof25 |

The kids loved this long tunnel esp when horn was honked! And they loved knowing trains go through the same tunnel. It is well worth it even if you aren’t going anywhere else in Whittier!

Only way in / out of Whittier

By Stacy K |

This is the only way in and out of Whittier. It is only open to one direction of travel at a time. This includes trains who get priority. Make sure you know the times that it will be open and queue up so that you don't get stuck on the wrong side. There is a toll required.

Tunnel to Whittier

By Dana E |

You have to take this tunnel to get to Whittier. We went there for a glacier cruise. The tunnel is one way ... every 1/2 hr the traffic goes in one direction & on the hour it reverses.

What an experience!

By Arthur M |

This is the first time we have ever driven inside a one-lane tunnel that is shared with trains too!

Coming to Whittier, we had to pay the toll first, directed to a designated lane, lined up around 20 minutes earlier, and there are three dedicated lines for private automobiles, one for buses, others for trucks, and one for overflow.

Coming back, there was a train waiting with us. The train went in first before automobiles did. We drove to the appropriate lane based on the guide that was given to us earlier that day coming to Whittier.

loved it

By tatianare24 |

very historical and beautiful to my matter and also for the kids as well my kids were jaw dropping when we went thru it

Neat experience

By nielmala |

We got there at 1030 exactly and worried we wouldn't make the 1030 crossing. It is very organized and no worries, we made it. Our row didn't actually start going through until about 1050. Very cool drive though :)

The tunnel to Whittier Alaska

By apwilker |

If you are planning on taking a glacier / day cruise out of Whittier, allow yourself enough time to get through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel. This tunnel is the only way into and out of Whittier if you are driving a vehicle or taking the train. It is a one way, one lane tunnel which means that on coming traffic must wait for the opposing traffic to clear the tunnel first. This could be up to a half-hour wait or longer. This is also the tunnel that the train uses to enter and exit Whittier; so you may want to check the train schedule and plan accordingly.
My family and I were extremely lucky in that the longest we had to wait to enter and drive through the tunnel was five minutes. You should also know that this is a Toll tunnel; the cost at the time that we went through was $12 for our car.

Its a long tunnel!

By greeneggs2 |

You need to time your visit as the tunnel only operates one way traffic and the trains need to use it as well, so if you miss the 15min slot for your desired direction it can be a long wait!

Better time it right for the longest highway tunnel in North America!

By psudino |

This is a really cool tunnel and part of our Princess Cruisetour. It is the longest highway tunnel in North America and 2.5 miles.

One-lane is shared between cars going in both directions and the train. It usually needs to be aired out in between trips with jet turbine ventilation. The one lane design saved tens of millions of dollars over the cost of constructing a new tunnel.

It was a cool trip, but I'm glad that the Alaska railroad times their trips so as not to wait long at the tunnel. Apparently a car could wait as much as 30 minutes to get through.

Smokey tunnel and Museums

By J R |

What a thrill this was to go through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel. When we arrived the Alaskan Railroad Train was coming to go through so all traffic was stopped. Once the train came through the tunnel filled with smoke. Not sure if this is a normal occurrence or not but it didn't take long for the tunnels big fans to clear the smoke away and then it was our turn to go through. The tunnel is 2.7 miles long and you actually ride along the railroad tracks. The speed limit is pretty slow so it takes awhile to get through. Once we got to the other side we were in Whittier. Nice little town that is now where most cruise ship depart from. The tunnel is open to vehicle traffic in the hour and half hour, and costs according to vehicle size.

Definitely worth a trip

By Raoul M |

Fascinating experience to drive through a train tunnel and to have to wait for access as the traffic is one way. This is the only way to drive to Whittier and well worth the trip.

A unique experience

By Gitika J |

The longest combined vehicle- rail road tunnel, 2.5 miles long. This opens every half hour from Bear Valley to Whittier, and every hour from Whittier to Anchorage. Check the timings before you travel either direction. The toll is $13 round trip.

If you like tunnels...

By Mike K |

The longest tunnel in North America, over 2 miles! Originally built to connect the Alaska Railroad to Seward, it is now open to autos. It's only one lane so they alternate the direction every 30 minutes. Loved it!

Whittier - here we come!

By NebraskaTraveler_11 |

Driving into Whittier, plan on driving thru this long tunnel. We didn't look at it as an attraction but appreciated the fact that it's available. It's well thought out as cars share it with the RR and tunnel times going in and out of Whittier are scheduled and well run. $13.00 round trip - considered it a good value so we could drive in.

Cool 2-mile tunnel

By Krista E |

With the exception of having to wait to go through the tunnel on the hour or half hour, it was still cool to go through a tunnel that is two miles long. Thank goodness the day we went it wasn't too cold so I got out of the car to take pictures of the area. Then on the other side of the tunnel is a little town called Whittier. Another beautiful area to explore while waiting to go back through the tunnel.

Great tunnel

By Mike P |

Driving through the two mile long, one lane Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel is an interesting experience. The tunnel provides access for Whittier to the road system. Pay attention to the access schedule.

Traveled through the tunnel both driving and in a train

By NHtrailrnr |

This is a tunnel, and a fairly long one at 2 1/2 miles. By car, I was concentrating, not having fun. On the train, it was way cooler, as I hung out between train cars, close to the walls, an enjoying the wind rushing by. It is a tunnel, what more is there to say?

Quick and easy access to Whittier

By Blacksquidie |

Going in to Whittier the tunnel opens on the half hour, we went through at 10.30 for a Phillips day cruise so make sure your timing is good as people missed our boat. The cost was $13 per vehicle and you que in lane 1 and travel at 25km only not stopping...was definitely an experience..the longest shared tunnel in the world. On return to Anchorage we just got the 5pm tunnel opening
Great experience

Anderson Tunnel hole in the mt.

By Paul C |

The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel was a one of a kind tunnel. Travel thru the tunnel is on a scheduled basis. The tunnel is a one way at a time adventure. On the hour, traffic travels from Whittier. On the half hour traffic goes into Whittier. The tunnel is well scheduled. Travelers have to wait their time. Waiting lines are set up to speed traffic thru the tunnel. It is well lit and traffic moves well. You must schedule your travel to align with the opening times of the tunnel or you wait until you time is scheduled.

Great experience

By derflieger2003 |

Our cruise to Alaska ended in Whittier and after another night on board the ship, we were transferred by bus to Anchorage. The only way to go is through this tunnel, which is shared by road and train-tracks in only a single lane being a one way for 30 minutes each direction.

DRIVING THROUGH A RAILROAD TUNNEL

By Roy E |

For many years, the only way to get to Whittier, Alaska, was by train or boat. The state of Alaska decided to convert the tunnel so that both trains and autos, buses, and trucks could use it. It's about a 3 mile drive through the tunnel, with trains and motor vehicles alternating through.

Way too much fun!

By George |

Plan for the tunnel opening for your direction. Take some time and review the tunnel history before your trip.

Awesome Tunnel

By Patmaloney5 |

I’d guess it’s one of a few tunnels like this one. It’s has a schedule and it runs on time. The tour operators in Whittier know which tunnel time you need to make it through. Amazing, it runs one way into Whittier, and back, it’s 25MPH, has a red light to put spacing between cars, and everyone is grouped up , cars, RVs, busses, trucks and follow in a long line. The walls looked carved, chiseled or made the old way, before tunnel boring machines. Then there’s the train. Alaska train passes thru, double decker trains, between the times cars passed. Metal plates on the road keep the cars out of the tracks. Very interesting to pass thru, and the only way to drive to Whittier. Cost varies based on size and what is towed behind.

Time machine Tunnel

By Dai Bussman |

Pretty cool if you want to check a one way tunnel. It feels like you are in a time machine and when you get to the other side you get into a tiny fisherman village from old times.

Fascinating Tunnel

By marta_mil |

On a recent trip to Alaska we had the opportunity to drive through the Whittier Tunnel on our way to take a day cruise on Prince William Sound. The 2 and 1/2 mile tunnel is the longest tunnel through a mountain in the US. It is one lane only so traffic going to Whittier goes through the tunnel on the 1/2 hour and traffic leaving Whittier goes through on the hour. The Alaskan Railroad also uses the tunnel. The inside of the tunnel is not finished with tile on the walls, it is simply raw rock and water drips through it making puddles. It is a very interesting place and it made travel from Whittier to the rest of Alaska much quicker.you must line up in lanes before going through the tunnel and wait for the green light. There is no stopping in the tunnel. Cars must stay 100 feet apart and the speed limit is 25mph.it takes about 10 minutes to drive through it. There is a toll of about $13.00 for a round trip.

A fantastic surprise

By Virginia T |

We chose to drive Alaska and found this wonderful gem. The Anton Tunnel was an excellent experience. Along with sharing a tunnel with a train (waiting our turn of course), learning the history of it along with the history of the town and it's oddities sure added to our trip. I would definitely enjoy revisiting both the tunnel and town. A highlight of the trip.

Long, but cool tunnel. Be sure to know the open times.

By lauralam |

We stumbled upon Whittier on our drive back to Anchorage. What a charming town! Be sure to check the schedule and know that a train can impact the schedule (because there is only one lane to get you in and one lane to get you out). It is a long tunnel and you get incredible views coming into Whittier right as you exit!

quite interesting

By DragonDad |

if you wanna get into, or out of, Whittier you MUST pass through this tunnel... unless you fly or arrive via boat. Because it is just a single lane (sometimes also shared with trains), the direction of traffic alternates on half-hour intervals. The process is quite interesting, actually, and we really didn't mind waiting our turn. It is very efficient, as well. If you are claustrophobic, you may not enjoy the experience because the tunnel is 2.5 miles long and takes approx 7 minutes to drive through (25 mph enforced). Because of the train rails it is just a little bit intimidating. I suggest staying toward right when entering Whittier, and to the left when exiting Whittier.

Crazy Tunnel

By Angela K |

Learning history about a tunnel. After our cruise that ended in Whittier we took a transfer from the ship to Anchorage. This one lane only, one way at a time tunnel services trains and vehicles. It's over two miles at 25 miles an hour, dark and solid rock. It was built for the military, now used by all. It can be and is a wait 40 minutes or more depending on a train or a long line of vehicles that come from the opposite direction. To be on the safe side of scheduling give yourself one to two hours for the tunnel. It really is unique to drive on the same small pathway as the train. It's narrow.

Quirky tunnel with lots of history

By Keith M |

Originally built during WWII, this tunnel makes getting in and out of Whittier a breeze (as long as you time it right). The tunnel is one lane, so traffic alternates inbound/outbound, and trains can change the timing, so check ahead of time. I think it's pretty cool that you can see the exposed rock face and tool marks as you drive through the mountain.

Convenient way to get to Whittier

By Rosetealady |

Be sure to check the travel/pass times for your trip.
The tunnel, while built for WWII train usage, is a short 2.5 mile pass through the man to get to Whittier. It is run very efficiently and will get you to Whittier or home again. The tunnel was not claustrophobic to either of us, and we both tend to be claustrophobic.

Fun Experience

By TravelsWithRuby |

A fun drive through the mountains under Portage Pass to get Whittier. The train uses the same tunnel so you have to go on a timed schedule.

Not nearly as frightening as I originally thougth

By Jennron8694 |

we chose to take the train thru the tunnel ...for a few reasons ...one...to take the Alaska Rail...and two...so we didnt have to drive by car thru the tunnel that shares the road with the train and is on a schedule.. The tunnel was smooth sailing and didnt take nearly as long as i had thought to go thru...maybe 6 minutes..

A great piece of civil engineering

By bron1960 |

Whittier is only accessible through this one lane tunnel which is open for half an hour in each direction. The tunnel is an engineering marvel.

Well-monitored by police - behave!

By JerseyGirl5781 |

I get claustrophobic so this was not my favorite thing though I can appreciate the engineering achievement that it is. This review is more of a warning. We were pulled over on the Portage side for not slowing down enough on the curved approach that slows you to 25mph quickly. Officer was very nice and gave the silly speeding Californians restaurant and hiking recommendations. My partner got off with a warning and we made sure to be very mindful in the tunnel. On the return trip, we were driving behind an SUV with three school aged kids who were having a great time screaming and waving out of their sun roof for the entire tunnel journey. The driver would speed up and slow down making them laugh harder. Not the safest choices but tempting I'm sure. Moments after exiting the tunnel, they were pulled over by another officer.

Drive safely in and around the tunnel!

Fun, unique experience!

By Laura S |

Our family of five with young adults went through the tunnel recently and really enjoyed it! It costs $13 to go through the tunnel into Whittier, the return trip doesn't cost. Vehicles leave the Whittier side on the hour and come into Whittier on the half hour. We arrived 20 minutes early and were first in line. We enjoyed the novelty of how cars line up and it took about six minutes to go 2.5 mi through the tunnel. There isn't much to do in Whittier except enjoy the harbor view and duck into souvenir shops, so you can spend a little more than an hour there and then get back in line to return. It's a unique experience that fits easily into your day. Enjoy!

Longest tunnel in North America

By vanessainsc |

The tunnel is the only way to drive into Whittier. Trains share the tunnel with cars so make sure to check the time table while making your vacation plans.

Light at the end of the Tunnel

By Nikki I |

Very cool experience! Pretty incredible when you think about the fact that everything that comes & goes, by land, has to go through this tunnel. Quite an engineering feat with the delightful charm of Whittier on the other side!

This was FUN!

By Karen R |

If you are claustrophobic, I'm sure it would be anything but fun - but we loved it. Rock walls on the inside are incredible. One way tunnel feels small, but hey, trains go through it so it can't be that small LOL!. We got to see a train come out when we were on the Whittier side - so cool. It was definitely worth the $13.

Beautiful Views on Both Sides, Engineering Marvel

By busymom11 |

The view from both sides in incredible in summer. Well maintained and very organized. A true engineering marvel. Would go again to just enjoy the view and to check out Whittier. Be sure to stop at picturesque Portage Lake. Don't recommend a cruise in the rain, but would check out the dock and town.

Very interesting

By PinkFloydActuary |

OK, so by now you know if you are driving to Whittier, you'll need to go through the tunnel. We paid our $13, got a map of Whittier and were told to follow the signs and speed limit. Number 1 rule here - obey the traffic rules! The guy in the lane next to us must have panicked about sitting for a while, as he tailgated the guy in front of him into the tunnel through a red light. A policeman was all over him and we saw him pulled over on the other side. The tunnel drive itself is pretty calm - 25 mph for a few miles in the dark tunnel, then you are in Whittier!

LongTunnel

By Mike P |

If you drive to Whittier, this is the only access to and from the community. I it is 2 1/2 miles , one way traffic tunnel. Traffic out of Whittier is on the hour and traffic into Whittier is on the half hour. Pay attention to the last tunnel in each direction otherwise you may be stranded in or out of Whittier.

Cool!

We enjoyed this experience...it was very interesting. On the half hour you enter Whittier and on the hour you leave Whittier.

Amazing tunnel!

By Slick5276 |

I’d never heard of this place until getting ready for our Alaska trip. I read up on the history of this tunnel and was excited to see it and experience going through it. It’s a true wonder! 2.5 miles long with a few turnout places in case there’s an emergency. Our bus driver knew the schedule for when we could go through it as the road as shares with the railroad.
Don’t miss this one!

Engineering marvel--kind of cool for the kids.

By Junie L |

The tunnel offers an easy and dependable route via car from Anchorage to Whittier. Has safety turn out, lights, adequate ventilation and all for only $13.00/round trip fare. Easy to drive over the shared railroad tracks. 2.7 miles. Might be hard for anyone with claustrophobia--rock walls are well spaced away from the car, but it is a tunnel.

Historical area

By goldenramoth |

When we disembarked from our Star Princess Cruise we traved by motor coach from Whittier to Anchorage Alaska. The only land entrance or exit from Whittier is through this historic tunnel. It was build by the military during war time. It is narrow with only one way traffic. One direction travels at the top of the hour the other direction at the bottom of the hour. Train tracks run through the middle of the tunnel and motor vehicle traffic stops when a train needs to travese the tunnel. There are pullouts and safe rooms built into the tunnel. It's an engineering feat to behold. I'm glad we went through and enjoyed our motor coach drivers history lessons on the tunnel and on Whittier in general.

Transit to Whittier

By JLWMCN |

Being able to drive any vehicle to Whittier makes life easier. The time slots and hours of operation make it user friendly. The $13 roundtrip fee for passenger cars seems a little excessive but the old alternatives of passenger train or loading vehicles on a flatbed railcar was much more costly in time and $$$

Nice to see

By Spring S |

Nice to see the longest shared tunnel in North America. Remember cash for entry. 2.5 miles approx. Very neat history.

Time Tunnel

By CatG |

We bought our round trip ticket and waited in line to go to Whittier. This was quite an experience. The tunnel traffic goes to Whittier on the half hour and from Whittier on the hour. The train shares the tunnel and goes through occasionally. The tunnel speed limit is 2 1/2 miles long, going 25 miles per hour, 35 feet apart. We thought it would never end! Whittier is like the end of the earth. Not much there at all. We did go on the glacier tour from here. I'm not sure we would do it again.

Narrow Tunnel With Great Traffic Control

By Robin B |

This is an historic tunnel, the only way to and from Whittier if you are driving. It’s very narrow but the control of traffic and collection of fees is very orderly, safe and well organized. Drive slow (25 mph) and stay vigilant or else you’re liable to dent your car/truck/trailer.

You Have to Pay, But You WIll Never Experience This Again

By NTSU1975 |

If you are heading to Whittier, or heading away, you will pass through this tunnel. A unique tunnel that incorporates train tracks and a single lane of traffic on a 30 minute time table. AT the approach, you will be lined up in traffic lanes with cars going first and larger trucks at the end. Heading to Whittier, you will pay the toll and that takes care of the return trip. We did not see a train passing through, but you will encounter the unique placement of the rail in the road system. The tunnel is safe with many safety factors built in to protect both auto and rail passengers. Do check the schedule and plan your trip accordingly.

Fantastic Journey

By Chris H |

This is the only land option into Whittier, Alaska. It does not make it any less impressive. The drive through the tunnel is surreal. You will be wowed by this tunnel.

Excellent Entrance to the Whittier Harbor

By Derekanddoc |

I was being told about the tunnel but you have to see it, feel it and go through it to understand. 2.5 miles of tunnel that trains use as well, but they must wait their turn also! Nice cool entrance to the Whittier Harbor! Excellent. Not too much for cars, more expensive for bringing in a boat and hang onto your wallet if you're bringing in a motor home. $$$$$$$

Interesting

By Arjay_Perth |

It was there, so of course, needed to go through. There is a speed limit set so it's relatively easy to sail on through. Air is constantly being refreshed by turbine engines and there are usually plenty of cars going through. It is a painless experience with not a huge wait and if you do have an extended wait, it is a good opportunity to get out of the car and take photos! Having done it twice - there and back - don't feel the need to do it again.

Unusual experience!

By Pomerols |

The tunnel is a very unusual experience. We had great weather and not very many cars both ways. The tunnel seems quite long because you can't drive at a normal speed. It is limited at 25 and it is easy to understand why. Driving next to or on top of train tracks is a little bit surprising! You need to time your arrival and departure well, as the tunnel is open one way or the other on a specific schedule. On the other hand, we found the town of Whittier to be not worth the detour except if you need to take a cruise or to experience the tunnel...

An engineering marvel

By W W |

After getting off our cruise we drove through here on buses. We had a great bus driver who told us the history of this amazing tunnel. It is only open certain hours and closes at nightime. It is narrow so cars /trains can only go one way at a time. It is strictly controlled. There are also survival alcoves at regular intervals in case of incidents in the tunnel as it is so long. Amazing highlight to the end of our fantastic cruise.

Amazing tunnel..!

By scuba-chuck |

Even if you do not need to go out to Whittier for anything - I recommend taking the tunnel out and back. it is really incredible what they have done with this tunnel - alternating car and rail traffic, in one tunnel - very ingenious.. Whittier itself is not much to see - but grab a bite at the Wild Catch Cafe, when in town, and take the Major Marine glacier cruise - quite fun..!

Interesting Experience

By MountainMama |

Arrive at the tunnel about 15 min. prior to your entering time for staging. It is $13 to go through to Whittier. They did not charge us on the way out of Whittier. They have different lanes for different size vehicles. Smaller vehicles got to go through first, then the larger. The tunnel alternates between road traffic and train traffic every 30 min. so be sure to check the schedule for what time you can come through or you may have to sit a bit.

Interesting engineering marvel

By Steelaway81 |

The tunnel is worth the $13 to go through. Certainly haven't experienced anything quite like it before. Thought I'd be a bit claustrophobic going through, but there is ample room and there is always the emergency safe-rooms located throughout. We enjoyed our trip in both directions.

An interesting experience

By Naseer24 |

We were driving to Whittier not knowing that we have to pass thru this tunnel. You have to pay for using this tunnel. $13 for normal car. The fare includes return trip as well. The speed limit is 25 mph and they do have speed check displays as well so keep within the speed limit. The tunnel has safe houses in case of emergency. The schedule is such that going out every early part of the hour and going in every later part of the hour. The tunnel is closed for vehicles at night (10.30pm I think) because the same tunnel is used by the train. Yes, the drive is on railway tracks. If you planned for something at Whittier, make sure that you arrive earlier at the tunnel at least an hour earlier.

Engineering Marvel

By Bernard W |

This engineering marvel cost $13 to Whittier, but free on the return. Currently the schedule runs on the half hour from Whittier, but verify the time before going. Don’t delay arriving to the tunnel where you wait in line before entering. Not sure if there is a car number cutoff after a certain point. For certain do not arrive late. The tunnel is beautiful and amazing at the same time.

Long long long

By santamonica2006 |

It is an interesting experience to go through the tunnel to Whittier. When arriving look for the sign that will guide you to the right line to buy your ticket. At present it costs a reasonable $13 for a regular car.
When the tunnel is open (.30 of hour to go to Whittier and .00 to come from there) just let the traffic light system guide you. You have one for your line and one that provides a safe distance from one vehicle to another BEFORE entering the tunnel.
Once inside it is very long and the stone walls from the mountain are in each side. Very easy to go through.

If You Enjoy Interesting Experiences

By Bill K |

Even if you don't need to go to Whittier, driving through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel is something you should experience. This tunnel was built for concealment of munitions during WWII. It is now the only land-based transportation route to Whittier.

The tunnel itself is remarkable for its one lane width, emergency safe houses (for earthquakes, avalanches, etc.), and high-powered fans (to push exhaust fumes out of the tunnel). The exhaust fumes still get pretty thick, so we turned on the recirculation function on in our car on the return trip through the tunnel.

Unique experience

By Mr. RPV |

Certainly a unique experience. We went through by tour bus, which eliminates the wait when vehicle traffic can go through. The tunnel has lighting and emergency shelters along its length, and is quite narrow, fitting the width of a single train. It is also an engineering marvel. The organized time sharing of travel in each direction, as well as train vs vehicles is quite an orchestration. But don't miss that last opportunity to get out, or you need to stay the night in Whittier.

So Cool!

By Theresa H |

Ok - I will start by saying I am VERY claustrophobic so am freaked out by all tunnels. That said my family all thinks it is pretty amazing! How they built and maintain it is a great story!

Very NEAT experience

By C Deans |

Just such a cool place! Excellent management of traffic flow! Have never witnessed such an efficient operation - and the booth attendant we dealt with was also friendly and personable.
Be prepared to pay a toll to use the tunnel - rates posted at the website (based on vehicle class and season0

Worth $13 to drive to Whittier!

By janmafait |

If you know the tunnel schedule (you can get it online or tourist center) plan ahead. All the reviews complaining about waiting in line is because they didn't plan a few minutes ahead.
We drove through the tunnel, yes, on the tracks- yikes! The person in the booth was helpful, but it does not prepare you for driving on RR tracks that go ONE WAY! LOL...on the trip back, it was like I drove it many times. That first time was worth the $13. Once in Whittier, we drove around and saw the old Buckner Building, drove to the end of Glacier Ave. to see the waterfall, ate at the Anchor Inn and drove back through the tunnel. It was foggy and cloudy, so our day was cut short.

One Lane, One Way Tunnel

By kjps35 |

This is a one lane, one-way tunnel. It is open on the half hour into Whittier and on the hour leaving Whittier. You must get in line with other vehicles to travel the through the tunnel and only so many vehicles are allowed.

Neat

By Madi H |

Visiting the longest tunnel in North America was pretty cool but it’s just like every other tunnel. Speed limit is 25 throughout the whole tunnel and they have very strict rules. Be sure to arrive a little early otherwise you’ll have to wait an hour to go through (tunnel is only one lane).

The only way to Whittier without a boat

By Donna N |

Awesome experience. A little scary the first time. All kinds of vehicles use this tunnel. Be prepared to wait your turn.

History and entryway.....

By glipham |

The only way in to Whittier by land, this tunnel has a wonderful story. It’s a very important part of the town and if you have a chance to take a drive through it you should absolutely go!

Great fun to drive through

By Doug G |

We drove to Whittier and back to go on a glacier viewing cruise. They operate the tunnel very efficiently, and at the times we went we had few cars in front of us. The tunnel is well lit and it's easy to take a photo or two as you go through.

Drove the camper - no problem

By John H |

Took our pick up camper through the tunnel, no problem. One way traffic, so check the schedule, but the wait is not bad. No problem with our 10.5 foot Bigfoot camper. Only takes about 10 minutes to get through tunnel. Very slick. Cost us $13, which we felt was not bad.

1 lane tunnel

By mennen22 |

We are glad we saw and drove through the tunnel. It was worth the $13 for the experience. However, it is just a tunnel. I want to say it took about 5-10 minutes to drive through it. It is only a one lane tunnel so there is a schedule it runs on. I believe it runs every 30 minutes. We never encountered the train, but did hear the train as priority when traveling.

We'll be coming through the mountain when we come!

By Jean H |

This tunnel is the only access into and out of Whittier. It is a single lane tunnel which accommodates both motorized vehicles and trains. There is a tight schedule for inbound/outbound and rail/vehicle traffic. We arrived in our coach bus and got in line just as an outbound train was coming out of the tunnel. Coach buses were allowed to enter first, then passenger and business vehicles next. Our coach driver pointed out the emergency doors where supplies are kept should people become trapped in the tunnel. It was good to know these were there but even better that we didn't have to use them!

Set timed schedule

By ItchyFeet |

This is the only way to get to Whittier from land (from Girdwood and parts farther like Anchorage. There is a set schedule; you need to plan to be there according to any plans like a boat trip. We entered the 10:30 am south opening and it was right on schedule. Our wait was only about 15 minutes since we knew schedule and planned accordingly. The train goes first, if it is there, then bigger vehicles and cars. It’s a 2 1/2 mile tunnel that you drive 25 mph through and it’s well lit to take a video and photos. Cost is $13 to include both directions. It was pouring rain when we were there so the mountains had tons of large waterfalls. It rained 4ā€ the day before and another 3ā€;the day we were in Whittier so the river and waterfalls were in full action mode!

Vacation

By usraven |

This is truly a man made wonder! Interesting view from the inside and how trains & cars go through at opposite times. So make sure your there early so you can make the Glacier Cruises!

Fun... unless you're claustrophobic!

By Scott G |

My two sons and I enjoyed this long, unique tunnel, which takes exactly six minutes to drive through. I know because I timed it for my wife and counted down the minutes. My wife who closed her eyes and listened to music the whole 6 minutes. My wife who is claustrophobic and knew this was coming, but it still totally freaked her out and she couldn't shake it afterward. In fact, we had two nights booked in Whittier, but we left after only one when my wife found out the tunnel shuts down at night and you can't get in or out of Whittier at all (except by boat). So the entire TOWN made her claustrophobic. Obviously she's pretty badly claustrophobic- she accidentally went down an enclosed waterslide once years ago and the park almost shut the ride down when she exited because she was hyperventilating and basically in shock. So all I'm saying is- if you're claustrophobic think twice before doing this.

Wow the history!!

By mxd2713 |

Read about the history about it and you will be even more amazed that they did what they did in the time period!!! It's a little scary how small it is and that a train uses it also!!!

Long tunnel

By Ich B |

This tunnel has to be used if you want to go to Whittier by car. Interesting old. One has to pay for it

Cool Tunnel

By Mrs-Dash59 |

We basically went to Whittier just to experience the tunnel which was really cool. Once in Whittier we walked around the harbour, checked out some shops and grabbed a coffee and snack. If we would have had more time i would have liked to hike the Portage Hike.

Very cool tunnel, went through single lane tunnel on train and then bus !

By recav8or |

this tunnel leads to the little town of Whittier which is a fascinating little explorable town tunnel is only one single Lane through two and a half miles of rock that closes down every night fascinating, very cool !

A fascinating tunnel

By Momski1620 |

I wouldn't go out of my way to drive through this tunnel. But it is the only way to get in and out of Whittier. This is a railroad/automobile tunnel. You drive on the tracks. You might want to make sure your bladder is empty before entering the tunnel. The entrance fee is $13. You may have to wait as there are certain times you can use the tunnel for going into Whittier, going out of Whittier, and train only.

Tunnel to Whittier

By dl2tall |

We drove a 30 foot motorhome thru this tunnel. It was a great experience. They have 3 lines for cars to line up, 1also for each - motorhomes, semi trucks and oversized vehicles. There are stop n go lights for each line. There is also a light so each of the vehicles are spaced at the right spacing. It was very interesting. Even though it is 2.5 miles long, it didn't seem to take long to get thru it.

Very cool!

By Michelle |

If you are considering going into Whittier... do it. It's a small town with one way in and one way out and it's through this railroad tunnel. 2.5 miles long and worth the $13ish dollars to enter. Where else will you get an opportunity to drive through a railroad tunnel?

Excellent experience

By edge8400 |

Enjoyed the ride through to Whittier. Moderate round trip toll for average cars/trucks, $13. Schedule is posted but can be interrupted (as our return was) by unexpected trains.

Interesting access

By tiredteacher2 |

This tunnel is the only way to access Whittier, Alaska. It runs on alternating half hours. Cars line up in lanes and are released lane by lane to travel through the tunnel. This is also how the train gets to Whittier so you are driving over the tracks for the train. The tunnel is fairly long and dark. An interesting trip.

Interesting

By JCW703 |

It's a one-way tunnel, originally built for rail traffic that is opened in one direction for a half hour and then switched. The only way to get to Whittier.

Riding through on motorcycles is crazy

By Maritta R |

There were 3 of us on motorcycles and it was a crazy experience for sure.
They have motorcycles go last as they are the most likely to have a wreck. You need to be able to ride straight between the tracks for 2.5 miles.
We had lunch in Wittier and a local said it was on her bucket list to go through the tunnel on a motorbike.
Definately check it out!

It's a tunnel...

By GnMe |

A long tunnel. Looks like a tunnel inside, beautiful views of the Chugach on the west end. And Whittier on the east. Interesting drive under a mountain, but the only reason to pay to go through is if you're going on a cruise, or kayaking, or fishing.

So cool

By Bearden23 |

Amazing feat of engineering. Posted schedule was right on time and very organized. Inside was like something out of a movie, a bit scary but so cool.

Mostly on time

By srishti2709 |

The tunnel opens when they say it does. If your tunnel time is 6pm then it will be open for your side of traffic from 6pm until 6.30.. Arrive early if you need to buy tickets (getting into whittier), but getting there anytime should be ok.. We were there around 6.20pm for our 6pm tunnel and just cruised through.. It is an experience in itself.. There may be 2-3 minute delays if a train is passing by around that time, but the delays are short..

Great experience

By Darren S |

Anton Anderson tunnel is the only way to get to Whittier
One way so to Whittier it opens on the half hour and the journey back to Anchorage is on the hour.
13 Dollars for the journey which covers both directions.
Very narrow once you are in the tunnel and can be a bit slippery at times if you are on the train lines.
Don't rush and don't worry if you are a bit on the slow side you will be looking forward to the light at the end of the tunnel.

Something fun to do and see

By KathleenL01 |

You have to wait to get into the tunnel, they let cars go each way every 1/2 hour. It is worth waiting and seeing Whittier, taking a hike and checking out the great view of the glacier.

Cool Rock Tunnel

By Northcoast_Flyer |

This experience probably isn't a good choice for a brand new driver, but it's a great up close look at the challenge of drilling a very long hard rock tunnel. Relax and enjoy the spectacular view while waiting for traffic to move, one direction at a time...into Whittier on the half hour and out on the hour. Don't be surprised if, instead of a camper, a train emerges from the single lane bore you are about to enter. It's all part of the fun.

A unique tunnel

By Dianne T |

A tunnel for both trains and cars with timed entrances for each - I have never seen another tunnel like it. It was build during the second WW by the army to supply Alaska from the base at Whittier.

Highlight of Whittier

By pottsfamily61 |

This tunnel and the timing of the trains and cars is amazing. This was the highlight of a dismal day. Not much in Whittier unless you are catching a cruise liner. Don't go out of your way to see Whittier !

Make sure you know the schedule!

By LandofHopesandDreams |

They have exact times when the tunnel is open in which direction. Make sure you check and plan your trip accordingly.

Through the mountain to Whittier we go.

By DBTraveler01 |

Make sure you know the tunnel hours. Pretty cool to drive through a mountain. Keep a safe distance and you'll be rewarded with a lovely little town.

Neat!

By nuprofessor |

Was very pleased that I waited for the proper time to travel through the tunnel. Interesting to actually share a tunnel with a train (not at the same time!)

You have to take the tunnel to see Whittier!

By Craig A |

Check the tunnel schedule for when traffic flow will be going to and from Whittier to minimize your wait time. The tunnel is not a scary place. It's a tight fit, but the speed limit is 25mph and I never felt a risk driving through it; it's the only way to see Whittier by land.

Plan your trip ahead

By Detourfromlife |

Pretty impressive tunnel that is shared by both rail and other vehicles. It is a one way street and the directions alternate based on assigned time slots.

Really cool

By gr8ful4222 |

The tunnel was originally only built for trains, so it’s extremely narrow, and traffic is only allowed to in one direction at a time. To save time, try to arrive just before the tunnel opens. If you ā€˜re heading into Whittier, taking a car through the tunnel costs $13, and the tunnel opens for 15 minutes on the half hour (e.g. between 1:30 to 1:45, 2:30 to 2:45, etc.) If you’re leaving Whittier, the tunnel is free, and it opens at the top of the hour (3:00 to 3:15, 4:00 to 4:15, etc.). If you don’t time it right, you may have a long wait.

Neat Experience

By Dihizzle |

We had to go across the tunnel to get to our cruise. They were very efficient and it was an interesting little experience.

Cool tunnel!

By Terri R |

Plan ahead! This 2.5 mile tunnel is so cool! You need to line up and vehicles move through one way about every 30 minutes or so. The gal at the toll window said this is the longest tunnel in the us.

Who said Amazing infrastructure!!

By Irving Rangel |

This is by far one of the most amazing examples of infrastructure i have seen!!!
The tunnel extend for a few km with a little of inclination while you travel thru it... which it gives you the sensation that you are descending to the center of the earth!!
Really enjoy the ride (on my rental car), even the waiting time for the cars in this side of the tunnel thru it to the other side.
Well once you get out the tunnel you will enjoy the magnificent view of whittier.

Cool

By Thomas S |

We booked a glacier tour in Whittier and needed to go through the tunnel. We may not have gone through it otherwise.. We drove a 31 foot rv through and it was no problem at all. The cost was not too high considering it is a round trip ticket. It pays to check before hand on what time to be there so you don't have to wait too long. We got there about 10 minutes before the time to go through and it was plenty early. We were there in September so maybe it would be different in July. Anyway, it was a fun little addition to our trip to Whittier and Prince William Sound.

Fun time

By Robyn G |

This is a great tunnel and a unique experience to drive through. Make sure you check the times so you don’t have to wait long.

Fun way to get to Whittier

By Ed B |

Check the schedule so you don't wait, or miss the tunnel opening in your direction. We drove through and then went through it in a train. It does cost $13.00 on the way into town and free on the way out.

Worth the 30 minute wait!

By Yvonne F |

In order to get to Whittier you have to use this tunnel, but it was an adventure all by itself! The tunnel is only one lane so there is a wait to go through. Even the train uses the same tunnel, so you drive on the same place the train travels. I was glad to get to the other side since it was very narrow.

Great driving experience

By Melissa S |

I was a little apprehensive at first, but it turned out to be easy and enjoyable. We went through it once by car and again a few days later by train. It's an incredible feat of engineering and I'm glad to have had the chance to drive through it!

Needs the two way traffic...

By Damiano D |

Went trough the tunnel and I must say that it is quite amazing for the construction. The problem is that it is one way only for trains and cars. This create delay especially if you end up behind a train. As the tunnel operates one way, there long waiting time before the transit. There is also a fee to pay for the transit. But it is the only way to go in and out from Whittier.

Easy Access to Whittier

By Brad G |

Every time we have used the tunnel to Whittier, the trip was on time and without incident. The system they use to get vehicles and boats of various sizes through the tunnel is well established and works very efficiently. Plus, you get to view awesome scenery while waiting to go through the tunnel.

Longest shared railroad auto tunnel.

By Cindy W |

You have to go through this to get to Whittier. It is very cool. One way traffic on railroad tracks through an entire mountain. Do it - it's an experience you won't forget.

It's a tunnel

By gottcoke |

What is there to say. It's a tunnel that is really long. We made it through alive and got on our ship.

Cool tunnel

By Sheamus0104 |

We enjoyed the uniqueness of this long tunnel. We waited from 3:16 pm to 4:30pm to ride through the tunnel. a train "approached" about 3:25pm and by the time it cleared we had missed the 3:30 opening. so be warned if you are trying to catch a ferry or your. We did not care as we were just going to see Whittier and have dinner there.

Fun tunnel experience

By Becky F |

I know it’s silly but it really is fun to go through this long one lane train tunnel where you have to get in line first before entering. So watch a waterfall while waiting. Yes, there’s only one way in and out of Whittier and this is it! So who was Anton?? Princess Cruise ship pierside in Whittier by the poet glaciers (Whittier and Longfellow.)

The tunnel was neat!

By January71 |

We drove thru the tunnel on our way to and from Whittier. It was really neat! It only opens once an hour each direction and you must be in line at that time to go thru. It is one lane on the (smooth) railroad tracks and takes about 5 minutes to drive thru.

Long tunnel

By stephanie303 |

Neat to drive thru. Make sure u plan a head the tunnel is one way in one way out. There is a schedule to check the times, for cars and trains.

Shared Tunnel

By Carrie L |

It was kind of weird to think there was only one way out by car. Don't go if you don't like tunnels, it's about 2 miles through the bottom of the mountain. And you need to know the schedule. It's in or out on the half hour and I guess you have to wait for the train to take it's turn, too.

Amazing Tunnel

By Tori W |

the Tunnel was absolutely amazing to travel through, you are going 2.5 miles through a mountain!! How often can you say you have done that!

Very cool way to get to charming Whittier

By Kelly D |

What a dramatic and unique way to get to Whittier! The line wasn't bad at all and it made the trip for my then 6 yr old more adventurous! This was July 2011.

Marvel of engineering

By fsdukejr |

2+ miles of railroad tunnel through hard rock. Waiting area at either end queues up the vehicles, like waiting for a ferry. When it is your turn, the tunnel is one way in your direction. After the time has elapsed, the line cuts off and the tunnel reverses.

Rude rude rude...

By pilotdaly |

Tunnel was fantastic & the Alaskan people are some of the friendliest we have ever met. Albeit one. The toll collector at the Whittier tunnel was rude and obnoxious. She was obviously disgusted with life and her job. Our recommendation for this native Alaskan... quite and go do something that doesn't involve people.

A very unusual kind of tunnel

By Jo Ellen W |

We were on our way to Whittier for a day cruise and had to go thru the tunnel to get to the town and harbor. We paid our $13 fee to enter the tunnel, and we were told which line to enter. We were in a 25 foot camper. While we were waiting, a train entered the tunnel. Then it was the cars, and then our turn. You ride on the train tracks. It was a fun and one of a kind experience. The tunnel is approx. 2 miles long.My husband had no trouble driving thru the tunnel. Speed is only 25 mph.

Coolest Tunnel Ever

By Steve S |

Never been in a one lane tunnel that alternated direction hourly. Paid 13 bucks for this 2.5 mile journey to Whittier, AK. Well worth the experience.

Very cool

By Becky S |

I find the tunnel awesome every time I go threw it and some of the toll collectors are very nice to talk to.

One of a Kind!

By BerryTN |

Driving through this tunnel was fun! I had explained it to my husband before we went, but as we started through he exclaimed: I’m driving right on the railroad tracks!
Advice: The schedule is deviated from at times due to the trains, so allow plenty of time for delays.

to Whittier, tunnel opens on the 1/2 hour out of town it opens on the hour

By NEofAZ |

title states it all, if you're going to Whittier, it'll cost as of 2018 $13.00 to enter and the tunnel is only open for 15 minutes starting at the 1/2 hour. leaving town it opens on the hour. the interesting things about this tunnel is (1)it is one way, hence being open for only 15 minutes (2) is shared use by the Alaska Railroad and (3) you drive on the railroad tracks. what they have done is paved the road so only the track where the train wheels run are open, the road is narrow and dimly light. speed limit is 25 mph and you must keep 300 feet between your vehicle and the one in front of you. if you are afraid of tight/dark areas then don't go into this tunnel

Loved it!

By karenbX9177QG |

So cool! I was nervous driving through the first time, but the second time was a breeze! Just a unique experience!

Miles through a mountain in a tunnel used by trains - and Whittier at the end

By T9-Orca |

What a memorable experience this tunnel is. It's a single lane tunnel, and something like 3-miles long through the mountains - traffic alternates directions every 15-minutes or so, or comes to a halt when waiting for a train to pass through. And at the other end - Whittier, a super-secret port in World War II, with an Alaska Ferry terminal, and tour boats to visit all the fjords of Prince William Sound, as well as being a departure point for fishing (halibut and rock fish mostly).

Wow! this tunnel is a truly remarkable experience - on the inland side, you're in meadows near mountains and the Portage Glacier, on the seaward side, you're surrounded by high rock walls with only two major buildings, both built during World War II (and one was the largest building in the Western USA for many years) -- one now a condo complex, the other abandoned.

Going through this tunnel is something you'll never forget.

Journey Through the Mountain

By Lynne A |

We trailer our boat to and from Whittier several times throughout the summer. To get from the Anchorage side of the mountain to the Whittier side involves driving through the mountain via a railroad tunnel that accommodates vehicles too. The 2.5 mile tunnel is the longest in North America. Once in Whittier there's lots to do, play in Prince William Sound, hike Portage Pass, dine on seafood, go on an excursion fishing or sightseeing. Going through the tunnel is an experience in itself. If you plan on going through the tunnel numerous times, buy a book of tickets which saves considerable on your pocketbook.

Interesting tunnel

By Lisa C |

It does cost a toll, and depending on when you arrive, you can go through right away or may have to wait a while. It is one way, so very well regulated.

It's a tunnel

By WanderGeek |

This is a tunnel you have to go through to get to Whittier from any other land locations. It is one way so you have to take turns and may have to wait up to 45 minutes if you get there at the wrong time. They are on a schedule. The wait may be longer if there are any problems.

Weeee!

By Nancy-Annette C |

A bit scary, but fun! It leaves for Whittier on the half hour, and returns to Bear Lake on the hour. It's fun to wait in line and chitchat with the other folks traveling back and forth. Get out and meet people!

Very Cool

By Love Travel |

I did a lot of research before our trip to Alaska but did not see this tunnel listed anywhere. What a neat experience. Our cruise ship docked in Whittier and this tunnel is the only way to get to Anchorage. This is a 1 lane tunnel and is shared by motor vehicles and the train so there are set times each can go through the tunnel. It was a really interesting feeling to be driving on railroad tracks in a one lane tunnel. So glad we got to experience this.

Just had to visit and go through while day tripping from Anchorage

By Ginges_revenge |

This was one of the must do's when we looked at things to do while day tripping out of Anchorage with the hire car.
We love watching the Alaskan Railroad show and have wanted to drive through this tunnel and see a train go through as well.
We drove up right on the end of the half hour to go through from the Portage side. We paid the small fee of $13 US and headed straight through.
Its 2.5 miles long and you have to follow the speed limit.
As you enter, you head into the tunnel running under the Maynard Mountain. It took about 8 minutes at the speed limit to go through.
There is an order to go through if you have to line up. Trains go first and they have to clear the tunnel before any other vehicles can go.
The tunnel is dead straight and has break down and emergency stopping bays located at strategic points inside the tunnel. There is speed signs inside the tunnel tracking your speed.
It was just cool to see this in real life and experience driving though.
When we exited out of the Whittier side, there was a train waiting to go through, so we waited and watched it go through the tunnel.
It was a good experience and well worth doing.

It's a tour all in itself!

The construction of the tunnel, pull outs inside and the tunnel times that you have to make or you stay overnight!

The only way into town

By csmith4517 |

This is the only way to drive into town. Fun to drive through. Be careful to note the times it is open. It was only open to drive into Whittier for 15 minutes, beginning at half past the hour. And then only open to leave for 15 minutes at the top of the hour. The last access to Whittier is at 10 pm.

Yup it's a tunnel

By Renae H |

I was a little underwhelmed by this tunnel. Hubby said it's relatively new and I thought that was surprising. You do only get to go through one way every hour so if you have something planned at a certain time in Whittier make sure you get to this at the right time.

Worth the $13 to get to and from Whittier!

By scotthovelv |

My 10 year old son loved going through this tunnel! It's one lane. Need to know you might have to wait so plan your trip accordingly. Costs $13 for the roundtrip through it. Whittier is gorgeous and you need to go through this tunnel if you are driving!

Interesting and Unique Drive

By Ferg42995 |

This is kind of cool. And kind of a pain. Be sure and know the schedule before you just show up. This tunnel is a train track that has a single car lane on top of it that goes 2.5 miles through a mountain to get to Whittier. Because of this, there is a certain time each hour that it opens for 15 minutes to allow traffic. Another time each hour it opens for 15 minutes to allow traffic out. And in between, the train might come or go. It is an expensive toll (currently $13 round trip for a car). It is cool to drive through the inside of a mountain along a railroad track. Where else can you do that?!

New experience

By Julie B |

I’ve never driven through a tunnel where it was a combination vehicle/train tunnel, meaning you had only certain times you could go one way or another. Road was ok, but really can’t expect much different due to its purpose.

Only way in or out by car

By Cindy B |

Trip was quick and painless, truly a unique experience. Well managed and maintained. Weather is quite diffrent on the other side if it's a low cloud ceiling.

Worthwhile experience

By LSUTraveller |

Much more exciting than we originally thought. Had no idea that the train actively ran and shared the tunnel with vehicles - quite unique. Decent fare for a round trip. Something to experience.

IT WORKED -- WE DIDN'T DIE

By DickandDolly |

This is one of the strange aspects of the very strange town of Whittier. A three mile, one way tunnel, shared by motor vehicles and a train. You have to check the schedule to find the time you can pass through, and everything in town -- tours, events, etc., -- works around that schedule.

different experience!

By Anette12345 |

Every half hour they swop and so they take turns in which direction you can drive in the tunnel since you cannot meet in it. Different to build a tunnel so narrow and long!

Loved the multi-model tunnel

By shadowmeboy |

We headed to Whittier and traversed this tunnel both directions. We saw a Alaska Railroad train come through the tunnel after us. Holding areas are outside the tunnel and traffic switches each half hour. Check the schedule before arriving to limit wait times on either side.

Timing

By Lisa M |

So the Whittier tunnel is a one-way tunnel for traffic and trains. It is very well organized and cost $15 for an automobile. We took the 1030am start, there are about 5 lanes. So although it starts promptly it takes a few minutes to move a large group of vehicles. Weekends are busy
The return trip had just a few cars, it's free and it was on time.

Fun day trip hike to portage glacier

Drove through tunnel in our own vehicle. Price by car. Hourly passageway. Eclectic tunnel drive to fun family day activities.

Pretty Cool

By Keith B |

The tunnel was a nice adventure. My wife really liked driving through. We were let through on schedule both going in and coming out of Whittier. Friendly staff. It's a unique experience, that's for sure.

Google Whittier Alaska History!

By Kelly J |

Didn’t realize it’s the only way to Whittier by land. One way tunnel switches direction every 30 minutes. This is Alaska history and is very interesting adding to some crazy history of Whittier.

Amazing

By Jeanne H |

This is an amazing 2.5 mile long one way tunnel that takes you to Whittier, Alaska which is a very small town. It costs $13 for a car to go thru it. Going into Whittier the tunnel is open on the 1/2 hour and leaving Whittier it is open on the hour. Very cute picturesque town.

Quite different driving experience

By TraavelGeek |

It is an amazing tunnel. You drive almost on the rail tracks. Make sure you are aware of tunnel opening timings from both the sides in order not to miss your cruise. The toll fee is $13.

Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel

By James C |

It is interesting that this tunnel is one way. It is used off and on all day long for automobile traffic and for railroad traffic.

Driving through a tunnel can be a travel experience

By AussiePD |

I had read about the tunnel but failed to appreciate the amount of organisation that goes into making sure it all works OK. A single lane tunnel providing access to two directions of both road and rail vehicles, especially in heavy load conditions in peak season has unique issues.Getting in and out of Whittier needs to take these issue into consideration just like a ferry crossing or catching a plane.

Claustrophobic? It shouldn't be a problem in this tunnel! :)

By C4vy579 |

I normally don't like long dark tunnels or places where I feel enclosed, but each time I rode through this tunnel in our rental car, I felt completely at ease. It takes about 10 minutes to drive through it, but there's plenty of room for a car to move through it, and it doesn't feel like it's a tight fit at all. Remember, the Alaska Railroad comes through it also, and the train is much bigger than a car. The rock walls are fun to look at as you travel through, and it's really a fun experience. It costs $13 for round-trip passage for a normal passenger car. You pay on the Bear Valley side and don't pay when you leave Whittier. When you're lining up, you see how many cars and trucks need to go through, and you think there's just no way all of those vehicles will be able to make it through before time runs out and the tunnel traffic is reversed...or the next train needs to pass through...but they all make it through. It's definitely a fun experience if you have the time to travel from Anchorage or Seward to check it out.

If you're going to Whittier you have to go through here.

By RACINMI |

It was a cool experience to get through the tunnel but if you're going to Whittier then you have to make this passage in some way either by train or in a car. Kind of cool to drive a 32 foot RV through here.

interesting tunnel

By FloridaLily |

unusual timed (one way each half hour) tunnel that is the gateway to Whittier, Alaska. Rather dark going thru but interesting to see the vehicles line up to wait for the time as it opens.

North America's Longest Railroad-Highway Tunnel

By lindamE5460KM |

An hour south of Anchorage off Turnagain Arm (Seward Highway), you take the Portage road and end up at the Whittier Tunnel. This tunnel is shared by trains and cars. For $13 you can purchase a round trip through the long tunnel to the waterfront town of Whittier. You literally travel through a mountain to get to this small town. Open year round, this is a gem if you like unique locations, spectacular scenery. Incredible military museum in town across the tracks which reveals history of Whittier and armed forces in Alaska. Comfy restaurant is next door and open year round. There is also hiking to Portage Glacier from Whittier. Whittier is visited by cruise ships in the summer which dwarf the waterfront. There are other sites to see in this small town if you are a history buff.
If you like to fish or visit glaciers, this is a great starting point.

Unique 2.5 mile shared with a diesel train that’s particularly ā€œinteresting ā€œ for motorcycles

By Chris M |

The tunnel is a one way road in ( on the 1/2 hour) and out (on the hour) of Whittier AK. At times the tunnel is closed to traffic to allow the train through. Motorcycles have to ride between the rails for the 2.5 miles through the tunnel; doable, but the rider must stay focused. The tunnel is well ventilated.

What a great experience!!!!

By david s |

Very nice folks that manage the tunnel,

It's 25 mph in the tunnel, 2 1/2 miles long very cool šŸ˜Ž

Great places in Whittier to eat , play , even have there own tow company in Whittier,
Whittier towing

There's about 300 residents in winter

Unique Experience

By Roadmap19 |

Alaska is filled with beautiful scenic drives. This tunnel is just another type of feature that makes driving to Whittier a unique experience. We had read the information online about how the tunnel operates and its construction. We really enjoyed the unusual tunnel. The staging area is simple and fast in our experience. The most difficult thing is of course planning your arrival/departure to coordinate with the tunnel opening. If you are on your way to/from Whittier, you don't have a choice, so just plan ahead and relax and enjoy this extraordinary tunnel.

Tunnel to Whittier

By Jackson_Lim |

A single-lane tunnel through the mountain to provide access to the Whittier Harbour. Road Traffic changes direction every half hourly.

Super Cool Ride

By thelibrarylady2007 |

The whole idea of going on a one lane tunnel for 2.5 miles through the mountain is super fun. And the fact that you start on the Whittier side by basically driving through a little triangle shaped opening makes you feel like you are entering a fairyland or something from a storybook. The tunnel itself is damp and dark, but it completely worth it!
