Very steep and winding road to the top but worth it for the super long distance views. You can see for miles and miles and take in all of Lake Chatuge and Hiawassee from the observation deck. Not a whole lot to do at the top but worth a quick visit.

By Brandie M |

A steep and somewhat scary ascent up the mountain (do not go with bad tires or brakes) gives way to what is surely one of the best views in the North Georgia Mountains. I think the painted graffiti on the rocks gives it a unique character.

This is a beautiful view of the lake in Hiawassee. A great place to take a date oe a family. The air is fresher at the top of Bell mountain. Awesome.

By Beth |

If you're looking for beautiful, breathtaking views, and can think of the graffiti as artwork and not destruction of property, then you will LOVE Bell Mountain!

By John M |

If you have never see Lake Chatuge and the surrounding area from any of the mountain areas surrounding the lake, Bell Mountain is the place to go. The road to the summit is a big narrow but it is paved and leads you right to the top of the mountain. The views are spectacular! The day we visited it was overcast and raining off and on, yet we still got a great sense of the beauty and peaceful area. Every visitor and local resident should visit this lookout point at least once!

By pjcruiser |

The views from Bell Moutain ae breathtaking. A wonderful place to take visitors and take on all he beauty of the area.

By Jeff K |

Had no idea that views like this were in North Georgia. Outstanding views of Lake Chatuge and surrounding mountains. Awe inspiring. Yes, there is graffiti on the rocks but I believe it’s allowed. Be sure to use GPS to get there because there is no signage on GA76. Paved narrow road all of the way up.

By g willie |

You ruined this beautifully unique spot with a parking lot and in return you got a bunch of out of shape yankees complaining about the graffiti from inside their air conditioned sedans.

By Gatorartlady |

Wind up the side of a mountain in your car sharing a narrow road with other vehicles. Your vehicle will smell overheated when you reach the top visitor parking area. The view is beautiful on a clear day. There is a wooden walkway up to an obsevation area. It is lots of stairs and no ramps. Lots of people enjoy painting the giant rocks at the top of Bell Mountain but now the park discourages painting. If it is rainy or windy the road up the mountain would be treacherous.

By Happiness00889390799 |

The drive to the top is a little scary, but the views are spectacular! An added surprise, all the graffiti on the rock outcroppings by the parking lot…not a huge fan but it’s interesting…

By Gene S |

WHAT A VIEW!!! However, the ride up was literally a 45 degree climb, not for any vehicle with a transmission problem, brake problem, or a cut back road fear. I read where one person had a issue with the painted rocks there. I didn’t have any problems with this. I just enjoyed the views. Well worth the drive up and back...IF YOU CAN!!! I give it a 5, but my wife give it a 3. Guess who had the switch back fear...

By britravelgirl |

The views from the top of the mountain are unlike anything you have ever seen! And it’s handicap accessible in that the views from the parking lot are still very beautiful. And then for those who can climb the stairs, it is even more stunning up top. This isn’t even a hike hike for such beautiful views, you don’t even need workout clothes. I highly recommend coming here, you won’t regret it. But be careful driving up! And be aware that It’s particularly busy up there at sunset.

By Jerry B |

We went to Bell Mountain with family and the view was amazing! We went at sunset and I couldn’t believe how far you could see. The drive up and down terrified me...curvy and high. Everyone else in our party loved the ride ;-)

By BigFootMidlands |

After a very steep windy drive and a very steep climb up a few yards, followed by some steep steps you arrive at the top of Bell Mountain and it’s so beautiful. It’s hard to believe you aren’t in NZ with the lakes and mountains. It’s a pity about the graffiti on the rocks and over the information boards. Well worth the huge effort to het there.

By Nancy S |

WOW is all I can say. The views are incredible!! The graffiti rocks are so fun to see! Probably one of the coolest overlooks I have ever had the blessing to see! Definitely worth the ride up ro see!

By Lynanne L |

Being a flat lander let’s say it was a unique experience in driving up and back down a one lane road with some turn offs to get out of oncoming traffic! The views once at top and higher platforms were amazing and on that day Cold & Windy! Worth going but only way I would drive up it is in a minicooper! 🤣

By Katie P |

The scenery on top on Bell Mountain is breath taking. It’s worth the winding drive to get to the top. They recently paved the roads in the past couple of years to making driving to the top more accessible if you didn’t have a Jeep. They also built staircases. Unfortunately when these changes took place- it was vandalized so now there’s spray paint EVERYWHERE! To me, it ruins it when people spray paint their names, genitalia, and immature messages all over somewhere natural and beautiful.

By Jkniphfer |

A great place .You dont have to walk far to see wonderful views basicaly drove right to it. There was graffti bit ot added a special charm to the place. Its a good place to take pictures

By eagle4332017 |

My barber told me about Bell Mountain. Took daughter and her husband there and just this week some dear friends visiting from Plant City, FL. The view is magnificent. A well kept secret in Hiawassee.

By Matt K |

The view from the top was amazing. Can view most of the lake and into North Carolina. The road going up is very steep, don’t attempt if your car has bad breaks, or a weak transmission. Was surprised to find such a place covered in graffiti.

By KC14926 |

Some of the other mountains in the area have reviews for a steep drive... This one is the winner for me. Truly a one lane road with no room to pass, very few pullovers if you do meet an oncoming vehicle. Hairpin curves. Lovely views at the top! Would not do this drive ever again. Go to a different mountain with a bit wider road.

By jenned17 |

Boy has the road to Bell Mountain changed over the years. It’s a bit twisty and a bunch of turns to get there, but a paved road and a view that is beautiful! You can drive all the way up or park and walk the last 300 feet up (it’s really not that bad). An observation deck awaits and another higher up (be careful on a few steps that weren’t quite so even). Loved the graffiti that makes the mountain unique and stunning view of mountain vistas and Lake Chatuge. We went before sunset and were rewarded with a beautiful view.

By Martha C |

The views were amazing we take too much photos
incredible 360 degree views of beautiful nature landscapes and lakes

By elfinicole |

Drive is steep and curvy. We walked the last 300 yards to the top while huffing and puffing. However the view was worth it. I also enjoyed all the graffiti in the rocks.

By Rtomascik |

Views from the top of the entire valley. Only drawback is the graffiti all over the stone and stairs/observation decks.

By Precept123 |

We decided to check out Bell Mountain and took the crazy crooked road to the top. It is very narrow and straight up. There are places to pull over to let other cars pass. We made it in a Ford 150 using 4wd. It is especially steep at the very top. But the view is worth it. It was crazy funny to see all the graffiti on the rocks at the top. Great location for some pictures too.

By Deidre C |

Didn't make it to the top. Almost died. But the view was super pretty when I wasn't concentrating on psychically keeping my tire tread contacted to the roadway. Wowza. My little Ford Fusion should be ordained the Sainthood.

By 245marciav |

This is a wonderful place for tourists to see the entire Lake Chatuge area. The drive up is rather precipitous, not for the faint-of-heart driver with narrow lanes, steep hills and tight curves. The panorama from the top is worth the nail biting drive up and down! People have spray painted the rock formations at the top which some find intriguing, others find destructive. Find you way to the edge or walk the steps up to the viewing platforms and enjoy the 360 degree view of a beautiful mountain range and lake . So many photo ops!

By Pete L |

Of course it's steep, it's a mountain, 1377 ft in 2.1 miles! 20 deg incline at one point...not much you can do about that, but good to be forewarned I guess. WELL WORTH THE CLIMB - one of the most amazing views I've ever seen

By Kristen |

The view from the top was amazing and 100% worth the steep climb! The drive up is also very steep and interesting! We even saw a mountain goat at the top. Highly recommend!

By CMM |

The Ride to the Top is the real thrill. It was a cloudy morning, but the Artwork is worth the ride!

By Twinhitch |

Feel so lucky to have found this hidden jewel. Everyone that comes to visit us is taken here to enjoy the beautiful views. We love to walk to the top and just sit and stare out over the lake and forest. Absolutely beautiful. Can get quite crowded on the weekends and traffic up and down the mountain can get a little scary so if at all possible I’d suggest a weekday.

By Deana K |

I was skeptical driving up the narrow road to the top of Bell Mountain but when we arrived at the top, we were speechless. The breathtaking views are more than amazing. And to top it off, it is perfectly legal to paint the rocks!!! Needless to say, we left our marks and we took lots and lots of pictures. We were astonished to look down on hawks that were flying around. We will make the drive just to go back to this magnificent mountain.

By Elly B |

You can drive all the way up and then there are stairs to climb to the top. You have a wonderful view from up there. It is worth the effort

By Shelby O |

Very steep narrow unmarked drive up, be careful and have good brakes. Wouldn’t try it if it rained. Once you get there it’s absolutely breathtaking! No hiking at all, just stairs, platforms and lots of rocks. We spent about an hour just climbing and taking in the views.

By LindaH343 |

We tried to drive up to see this. The road was narrow and twisty. We parked at the first lot and thought we would walk the rest of the way up. Almost a 90 degree uphill on paved road. Just couldn’t do it. Sad to miss the raved about view.

By Campbellsoupkid |

A local shop owner clued us in on this gem when we were heading to Brass Bald Stat Park. It was QUITE a drive up. BUT you can drive all the way up to the top! Kids loved it and the view was spectacular.

By oldag84 |

Of course the graffiti is a turn off, but look the other way and there are simply some of the best views. We almost didn't go because of the graffiti, but we were so glad we did. It's nice for older people or those that have trouble walking as you can drive right to the summit. The road is thin and narrow and VERY steep but not dangerous when driven prudently, so just be cautious.

By Nicky H |

Beautiful views and worth the slightly hair-raising drive. Ugly graffiti on the rocks at the overlook detract from the experience.

By Toni F |

We were lucky enough to go on a Crystal clear fall day. Could see for miles all around. Access road is paved but extremely steep and narrow. Exiting ride !! Worth it for the view

By cusays |

The road up is a little twisty and steep, but the views at the top are amazing. Beautiful views of Lake Chatuge and the surrounding mountains. Don't forget to bring a can of spray paint to leave your mark -- something that is encouraged at Bell Mountain.

By Heather C |

The ride up is terrifying..but it makes getting to the top so much more awesome. I didn’t notice any closed signs because my heart was in my throat the whole way up. Beautiful spot for sure.

By Marlanda T |

We didn't plan to visit this place after reading the reviews about the road, but so glad we did! The owner of the place we rented recommended it so we decided to go. Road is very steep and very skinny. Good brakes and low gear are a must! Once we got to the top, the views were amazing! Truly beautiful! Hate that people painted the bottom of flagpole. Wish they could just follow the rules and keep the paint on the rocks only! This is a very nice place with all the different platforms. Makes for some great photos!

By patandjamie |

Great views. Nice platforms to view the lake. The drive up and down wasn't so bad. I didn't really see any hiking trails. So after 20 minutes, you're done.

By Rebecca L |

Great views of Hiawassee and Lake Chatuge! We even brought a picnic lunch and ate at the observation deck. The road to the summit is very steep and narrow. We parked at the first parking lot and walked to the top - just about 300 feet. Free to the public!

By momabe |

Much different now that it is a park and not a treacherous 4 wheel journey. Paved and very steep to the top. Parking lot and platforms for observations. Most incredible 360 degree views of the area.

By Cathy H |

Beautiful view, to bad that there are 2 permanent bell mountain closed signs posted when they are not closed! It discouraged some people, who come for miles to go, from Going, but we were persistent and hung out and talk to other passer Byers whom said it was open! Poor folks that turned away so sad for them to have missed this delightful Beautiful experience! There is a steep hill climb To drive up and you will experience the smell Of brakes on the way back down!

By Emiliano P |

Very narrow and steep road to mountain. Nice views from top! Did not like the painted rocks, there are signs saying painting is prohibited...
Good Mexican restaurant in town.

By Heidi A |

The drive is definitely not for the faint hearted who are afraid of heights as the road is narrow (single lane) and on the edge of the mountain. We hiked from the bottom (first parking lot) and are both in our 50's and fairly fit and it was a bit of steep hike which made us out of breath. You can go to the next level parking but have to watch for hikers. Once you hike the 100 yards or so up the steep pavement then you have to walk up a lot of steps to get to the very top, maybe 100 or so. But it's worth the beautiful views! There is a lot of graffiti on the rocks, fences, etc. unfortunately which I didn't care for but my fiancé thought it was neat. it's about an hour trip or so.

By Mleggett |

My mother and I went here yesterday. There are a handful of changes from the older posts.

There is no upper parking. There is a gate that is closed preventing you from driving to the upper lot. This may just be seasonal due to not wanting to maintain the road from ice and snow.

The lower “parking” is not traditional parking. It is just a flat spot on the side of the road. Not paved. There are two areas people used for parking. There is about a 10in to a foot drop from the pavement in most spots to park so it is not recommended to take a car. In the two spots to park, there was room for about 10 cars to park.

There is no where to turn around if the parking is full.
The drive to this “parking lot” is not a fearful drive. It takes about 10 minutes. It is curvy and hilly and just about a one lane road. It is all residential though. There are mirrors to help you see around the curves and there are paved pull offs in case of on coming traffic. Put it in low gear and you’ll be just fine.

There are a handful of closed signs but they are permanent signs. I believe this is to warn you that there is no official parking for the park.

From the parking to the top is about a half mile of steep hills so it is not for the faint of heart.

It was a bit hectic when we showed up to find parking, not drop off the pavement, and attempt to drive backwards down a curvy hill since there is no turn around. But over all, we are glad we waited for someone to leave so we could experience the view. This was definitely a must do when you’re in the area.

I had the pleasure of visiting Bell Mountain several times as a child we even camped there in the 70s. I have been back a few times but not in 15 years at least. We went yesterday and the drive was as I remembered scary but fun to the top. The parking area up top was new for me. The WORST part is there is Graffiti everywhere. On every rock ! I cannot believe people would do this to such and amazing place to visit. Broke my heart. Respect has been lost. The view is amazing and still worth the ride. But when it was natural many years ago it was better !

By Terri J |

The views were so pretty. The only other way to get a view like this would be by air. Sad part is all the graffiti on the rocks and signage ect. Some people have no respect! It’s well worth the drive and curvy roads.

By Susanne T |

The views from Bell Mountain are amazing! There is parking and a number of steps to an upper platform, which makes the views even better. The road going up to Bell Mountain is almost unmarked, very steep and for a good portion a one lane road. Drive slowly and be very careful going up and down, but it is totally worth it.

By TravelinGalFL |

While the drive up the mountain is not for the faint of heart, the view from the top is absolutely worth it! You can see for miles from up there. If you can stomach driving up a narrow road that is only wide enough for one car at a time with traffic going both up and down, and having to pull over on narrow shoulders to allow cars traveling in the opposite direction to get by, and you aren’t terrified of heights, then you should definitely make the journey up the mountain.

By Kathy |

Such a fun place to be! Great drive to the top of the mountain & spectacular view! The air is so fresh at the higher altitude.

By Allen C |

The sunset view is awesome - and the scenery, which includes the mountains and lake, was stunning. I was very disappointed by all the graffiti on the rocks.

By Elizabeth M |

Went up after dinner and enjoyed the sunset afterglow and took some amazing pics. Had a jeep take the ride up. Not too bad although did have pull over couple times to make way for passing cars.

By 1Traveler1996 |

The road is now paved all the way to the top. It is very steep and narrow and you may have to pull off some to let other vehicles pass. The view is breathtaking. The graffiti has been there way before the road was paved and the area made into a beautiful visitor area. Its a nice place with fantastic views. We take all of our company there.

By Marturp |

The view of Hiawassee, Lake Chatuge, & the mountains from the top is amazing & worth the trip. I you can drive to the very top if you want, or you can park 300ft down from it & walk that last part.

By suepaulalow |

Driving up very narrow, winding path( barely a road), we were not sure what we would find. We were amazed at the great views the area and the observation tower provided even more. The scenery was very picturesque because of the graffiti painted rocks that enhance the landscape.

By Shuantell D. S |

No words, simply majestic. The trek up Shake Rag Rd narrow road, heading up to Bell Mountain, is worth it!

By Jason F |

Bell Mountain had great views of the lake and surrounding area but all of the graffiti was depressing.

By Ronnie M |

Not too fond of the access road; but it is a mountain road for sure! Great view of the scenery. Understand they have put signs up for no painting graffiti on the rocks since I visited it. They use to allow it. I am glad they have stopped it and hope maybe they have plans to clean the graffiti up.

By Igorek007 |

Amazing views. Great at sunset. Free entrance. Easy parking, but difficult driving, so be very careful, but it’s definitely worth it!

By BARBARA H |

Well worth the trip to top of mountain but the ride up is a thrill and just hope you don't meet someone coming or going. Would go again though as view is amazing from top.

By LoveMyCherokee |

Awesome loooong distance views! Steep narrow paved road leading to summit. Make sure you put vehicle in LOW Gear on descent and prayer helps to calm your nerves.... All kidding aside, a must see for visiting friends/family.

By Tina D |

Bell Mountain is awesome the road is steep but not bad . the view is awesome you can see mountains for a long ways .and the lake is beautiful from way up it as cold the day we went and the wind was blowing and it had snowed the night before so there was snow on the steps going up to the top platform .I would for sure go back ..and the rocks you can paint on them we didn't know till we got there so we didn't take paint with us ..

By Randy B |

This may be a challenging drive for some to reach the top, but the view of Hiawassee and the surrounding area if great. The graffiti was interesting and quite colorful. Signs are posted that advise that it is against the law to paint the rocks, and the area is monitored, but it doesn't seem to matter.

By gagrl2 |

Stunning views. Just stunning. Drive most the way up. Then short walk and lots of steps. Quick place to visit but worth it for the views.

By Cheryl B |

have been to Bell Mountain twice with my boyfriend the first time we went there and it was cold and rainy but yet it was beatiful there were fog clouds all over and i had never saw those before it was so pretty to see, the second time we went it was warmer on a sunny day and even more beatiful we got to see parasailors para sailing.

By Skyarrow1 |

Want to see a great view without any climbing... here is the place. Now if you can do a set of stairs, the view gets even better. If you get there early, might even see clouds/fog in the valley plus not as many people. It was pretty cloudy the day when we were up there, but still worth it. Only one other set of people up there when we were there because we were so early (about 8:30am).

By mark |

Amazingly beautiful vista is the reward for hair raising (near vertical)drive up what is essentially a one lane road

By Bruce M |

This was our third time going up to Bell Mountain. There is no doubt that it provides the best view of the Lake Chatuge area that there is. On a clear day, the view is simply incredible. I think every visitor to Hiawassee should go up there at least once on a nice day just to see the area.

However, if you go, make sure you have an experienced driver who knows how to drive up and down a very steep, single lane road, It would be very easy to overheat your brakes on the way down if the driver doesn't know how to drive such terrain properly.

Also, your vehicle needs to have a good strong engine which is geared properly for ascending the mountain. Last year I drove my Toyota RAV4 with a 4-cylinder engine and had no problem whatsoever ascending the mountain. But this year we drove my wife's Ford Fusion with a 4-cylinder engine and it really strained to make the ascent. Same size engine, but geared differently. It made a lot of difference.

Finally, be prepared for all the graffiti on the rocks at the top of the mountain. This site was used by the local teens for many years as a hangout before the county turned it into a park, and all the rocks are covered with graffiti in a multitude of colors. There is hardly a rock there which hasn't been painted and "tagged" by those who wish to deface the top of the mountain. While we were there, a couple of young people were doing just that up on top of one of the rock abutments. It seems to be accepted that it is okay to do that.

So drive to the top of Bell Mountain and enjoy the stunning view. But don't look around at the rocks, because there is nothing beautiful about them.

By Grady M |

One heck of a climb to get to the top of this mountain. Narrow and steep, and gets more so the higher you go. If you can, go during the week instead of the weekend. Only one other family was there when we went; I understand if gets pretty crowded on weekends, and I'd hate to meet a big truck coming down! Great reward at the top, though. The lower observation deck provides a wonderful panoramic view of Hiawassee and the lake; the upper deck gives you a 360 degree view of everywhere! Those are the upsides.

The downside is all the painting of the rocks. I understand that it's been going on since forever, but vandalism is still vandalism , and it's very distracting and detracting of the beauty of the place. That's the reason this attraction only gets four stars.

By sritter3 |

You can get a beautiful 360o view with lake everywhere. It is a county run park with easy access & good parking

By Rocky161 |

We visited Bell “graffiti” mountain as a last minute quick site seeing venture. Great views. Steep walk up from lower parking lot. Beautiful in its own graffiti way. Didn’t appreciate kid with drone destroying the peace.

By Stacey N |

It is not very hard to get to the top of this mountain. And the views are worth it. Early in the morning, there was a lot of fog over the lake.

By northwoodspatriot |

View is ruined by the local government allowing the painting, drawing or otherwise defacing the rock formations with graffiti. Seeing the disgusting intrusion of human silliness and narcissistic expression by those who know no better makes me not want to recommend this place to anyone. Such a shame!

By Dawn B |

Twisty narrow road to get there, it is paved now. Parked lower parking and walked up the very steep road to top. Too bad there is so much graffiti on the rocks however, the views more than make up for it.

By Adventurer696856 |

This is not an easy drive to the parking lot. It’s very narrow in multiple locations but it is worth the trip to see the views.

By buckeyefamilyof5 |

They just paved it so you are able to drive all the way to the top which makes it very easy for young children and older adults. Take some paint and you are able to leave your mark on the rocks. Beautiful views--don't miss out!!

By Julie D |

This isn't advertised that I could tell but my husband saw it in binoculars from our room. What a VIEW! It felt like we were on top of the world. I am fairly afraid of heights so it took me a minute or two to walk around but it was very much worth the trip. The entire top of the mountain isn't very large so there is a view on ALL SIDES.

By Chaz Parks |

I’ve seen views all over the world from Fiji, Brazil, Spain, Netherlands, Iceland and more. In the moment you’re always thinking this is the greatest view I have ever seen. In the moment when I was looking at the view from the top of Bell Mountain I thought it was the greatest view I had ever seen.

Driving up to the summit makes this opportunity to view this epic overlook easy for anyone. I highly recommend going here to snap some pictures around sunset but then putting your phone in your car and just taking in the moment at peace.

By Noam S |

Best view that i saw in Georgia State , suggest to go on clear day!
i also recommend to go to Brasstown Bald which is the highest point in Georgia and you have also amazing view from there

By Mary W |

Other than the drive up, this is a "must see" site. Beautiful view of of Georgia, North Carolina and Lake Chatuge.

By munidupi |

What an adventure for a senior couple over their 70’s. The road is more than curvy, it’s a one lane two way road with twists and turns that will raise your hair up. Prayed all the time I would not find a car coming the other way which we didn’t. It takes us all the way up to the second parking lot with no problems. (I have a regular SUV with no 4x4 traction) There are 115 steps to the highest observatory point. What a postcard of a view, breathtaking on all 360, the lake, the town, the mountains, the sky can’t say enough beautiful things about the place. The graffiti on the rocks is permitted as long as there are no offensively writings or pictures and you are encourage to leave messages on anything you can find. I did like the graffiti unlike other reviews. One funny thing is as I was looking at the rocks, to my surprise on the top was my flag from Puerto Rico. I recommend this beautiful place, be careful with small children.

By RoverTreks |

Hiawassee, Georgia is a lake town of some renown among travelers from far and wide given the presence of Lake Chatuge that flows through and around the area and the various outdoor activities on offer in the mountains of North Georgia.

Bell Mountain stands stark and tall looking down on the city and surrounding area. If you ask a local where to go, what to do and what to see, they’ll tell you to visit this place.

A narrow one lane road is your path by car, truck or motorcycle up the steep, no shoulder incline. For some, this trek is intimidating.

The views say it all. You can see four states from the summit: GA, NC, SC, and TN. It’s truly quite spectacular and worthy of a visit.

By FLWOOKIE |

Bell Mountain in Hiawassee, Georgia is a great place for people of all ages to go. The views are long distance and there is lots of layers of hills/mountains. The drive up is the worst part, but is paved. I recommend to take an SUV. The stairs and rocks provided some great experiences.

By bbox2015 |

Breathe taking view of City of Hiawassee. Surround view. You have to be careful driving up to the top and it's a narrow road. Be sure to take a camera so you can take pictures. Everyone need to go see it one time.

By Tina A |

A "Must See" area! Keep your car in low gear, both up and down and watch out for oncoming cars. There's a parking area at the top after the warning signs. So worth the effort!

By N2Malinois |

People looking for a great scenic view when they're in the north Georgia mountains should definitely visit this spot. I have to admit that I have mixed emotions about this place. It used to be accessible only by 4x4 vehicles and hikers. To me, that made it more special if you were one of the ones lucky enough to make it to the top. Now that the county has graded and paved the road all the way to the top and made 2 separate parking lots, the trip to the top is not that special anymore, but the view is still amazing. Definitely worth the trip!

By 4034651 |

What a beautiful view!
Thrilling road trip to the observation staircase. Climbed the rocks to the top.
Definitely worth the effort.

By ATLAV8R |

Careful that you don't miss the turn at the bottom of the mountain. Once you start up the road will change into a single lane. I was riding one of our motorcycles with the wife on the back and is is a fun ride to the top. We passed several cars coming down and it is a tight squeeze and I would hate to have two cars try to squeeze by each other. he drive is very steep but the reward at the top is well worth the trip up. The Graffiti on the rocks is actually nice and sets the place off as unique artwork. I would suggest you go late in the day as it faces NW and the sunsets will be something you remember all your life. Would love to fly my Hang Glider here as it s just beautiful! Too Bat TripAdvisor will not allow movies to be uploaded.

By Carolyn G |

We had a little difficulty finding Shake Rag Rd. I don't believe there was anything saying "entrance to Bell Mountain". The drive up is windy and narrow, but it is okay. When you reach the first parking lot, it is a very steep walk up to the viewing area. We started to walk it and then decided to drive up the steep incline. I am glad we did. It was okay. The view is incredible from the top. There are also steps that take you up higher to another viewing area. We did not do that. I would highly recommend the drive...great for pictures.

By Shannon M |

The road up was narrow, barely wide enough for one car much less two. It also had closed signs and no where to park. We drove up, turned around and came back down, didn’t get to see the beautiful view

By DiscoveringDuo |

Bell Mountain is an incredible place. I've visited in both spring and fall and loved it both times. Going to college not too far from here makes it easily one of my favorite little day trips. I do advise you make sure your car is okay with inclines up and down because this is a steep drive up and back down. Once you're there though you can park and walk up a steep part or you can drive all the way up. There are many viewing areas once you arrive and this view is truly amazing. It's essentially panoramic and absolutely a beautiful overlook. This is a must do if you're in the area. Bring snacks or a picnic lunch and enjoy your day or just come for a quick hike up to the top to see the sunrise or sunset. Well worth taking the time to visit here.

By jeff b |

Great place for anyone, what a view! Just make sure your going with someone who is a good driver, Its a steep drive with curves. Anyone can spray paint something nice on the rocks, so bring a can of spray paint. Have Fun!

Anyone who sees this and thinks it’s “cool” or “artsy” doesn’t understand vandalism. There is not a single rock, or piece of wood on the tower that hasn’t been vandalized with graffiti! I was told by a local that this is a tradition for hikers. I don’t know any hiker that would do this. This could have been an amazing place to view Lk. Hiawassee. The drive up is through an impoverished area full of junk yards and unfinished apartment buildings.

By Lori W |

First Time visit with our daughters family -2 young boys who loved running up the rocks. As I was having foot problems loved that we could drive to the top. Loved the view. I found a good Boulder to sit on while the rest of the family climbed the steps to the very top. Beautiful. All the graffiti on the rocks is a bit disturbing wish people would leave things natural. But just look out over the lake for all the beauty. Look forward to returning often to see this view in all the seasons

By Robert B |

Head up 3,400 feet to reach the top of Bell Mountain ⛰ you will be in jaw dropping awe of the 360 degree view! Honestly, you will feel like you we’re almost touching heaven! The views were amazing! If you are near Hiawassee Ga put this on your to do list...oh yes, I forgot to mention you can drive a paved road to the top or park and hike up about 500 feet ...best of all it’s free!

By Wesley W |

Awesome activity with gorgeous views. Be sure to have a reliable vehicle with a strong transmission to get up the very steep inclines to the top of the mountain. Bring water and comfortable footwear

By dianaarrowood |

One of the most beautiful places in Georgia! A must see!! On a beautiful, clear day you can see for miles and miles!

By BobbyD1927 |

For such a great place with such amazing views, the road should be a little more family-vehicle friendly. We made it maybe halfway up in our mini-van and then just about went sliding off the road because of how steep it was and because we lost traction in the leaves on the side of the road, having to move over for another vehicle. Are you kidding me? This was a one-lane road, not two. So ridiculous. Steepest road I've ever seen. We decided the views were not worth our safety.

By Dee22321205 |

Amazing views be careful driving driving very narrow one way curvy roads drive slow very dark road up lots of parking highly recommend

By Ned K |

The road up to the 2 parking areas is rather narrow and steeper the further up you drive. There is a lower parking area, but a steep walk up the road for about 300ft. You can drive up to the upper parking area but wait if you see a car coming down the hill. Once you are at the top there are wooden steps to the observation areas. At one time people would come up and paint the rocks, but now that the National Park Service maintains it and they are trying to discourage the rock painting. Wonderful views of Lake Chatuge and surrounding mountains. Sometimes you may see paragliders launching themselves off the mountain and sailing in the air for 4-5 hours.

By Robert C |

Go see this view if you are in the area. It was breathtaking! Well worth the steep climb through the mountain by car to co.e upon this view!!!

By Marie |

For the local jeeper, this is a treasure... but now it is reachable to the average local or tourist. Very sad that it is now paved and the areas are roped off and now have observation decks... what once was a place to explore is now a tourist trap. No more quiet escapes to watch the sun set, or place for a snack to watch the beauty of nature. THe traffic up and down to the observation deck is heavily traveled and not what it used to be like. I'm glad that many can experience it now, but I"m worried that folks will abuse it or get hurt due to the elevation. Safe travels and enjoy!!!

By Florence H |

A must see! The North Georgia Mountains are the oldest Mountains in the USA, and in my estimation the most beautiful! I can't believe that we waited this long to take the drive....and can't wait to return. This is on the list of Must See places when our family and friends come to visit. It was a rather rainy day today but it was still beautiful...next time will return on a clear sunny day.

By Navigator817230 |

Beautiful place to visit and very creative activity. My 8 yr old climb to the top and loved every min.

By ksocozy |

Great view from the top. The drive up is very narrow and steep. But worth it. There were a lot of nasty bugs flying around at the top of the lookout but were not in the main area.

By Linda T |

Came to Hiawassee for the solar eclipse and learned the County was allowing a limited number of cars at the summit the day of the total eclipse. It was an excellent day spent with many new friends watching from an awesome place.

Major thanks to Towns County for their excellent organization and care for all of our needs. Water and Porta - potties were available, but most impressive was the ambulance response to an emergency at the top. For those who say the road up is difficult in a car -imagine doing it with an ambulance.

Great experience in a great spot!

By Ingo |

The drive up the hill is actually not too bad- be prepared for a serious adventure and take your time. We had a 4WD and made it up the hill without any issues. The views are amazing- worth risking your life. ;-p

By Tanya Nicole |

Well worth the winding road to the top. Over 100 walking stairs to the top viewing area but still a great view from the parking lot. Breathtaking view of Lake Chatuge and surrounding area.

By DianeL |

This is a must see at sunset!! There is nothing like it. The road to the top is pretty narrow, scary at times, and you must pull over for other cars...... but so worth the stress of the ride up. Incredible is the first word that comes to mind. Great views of hiawassee and lake chatuge.

By Wendy B |

This used to be a difficult location to visit but the county recently put in a completely sealed road all the way to the top. There are also viewing platforms across the top of the mountain now. So great views of the surrounding counties including Lake chatuge Hiawassee Brasstown Bald can be seen

By Jay |

Fabulous view even though it was a bit of a hike and a tiny bit slippery! Worth even the sketchy drive!

By MaryLynnMcKenzie |

The drive up is a little shaky when it's crowded. Parasailing off of here is a blast! I hit a rock but then took off, so worth it!

By Fountain's Food Adventures |

Definitely a great place to go when the sky’s are clear, spectacular view as you can see for miles and miles - overlooking Lake Chatuge. The drive up is rather steep and then a very short walk and a number of stairs to the viewing decks - overlooking the graffiti rocks, a rather colorful addition to the top of the mountain - Enjoy the view!!

By Celeste J |

I believe you can see NC Tennessee and Georgia from the lookout. Windy narrow road but smooth and worth the trip. Don’t forget your camera.

By Slmilner |

We were going through Hiawasse and found this jewel on trip advisor. The previous reviews about the drive were spot on. We were in a 4 door sedan but made it up to the “almost” top, very slowly. We parked in the lower parking lot and walked the 300 feet to the top. Realize there was a wonderful parking lot at the tip top too. This place is SO cool. The views are incredible. We saw hawks flying around “below” us! It is well worth the trip up.

By jhvcpa |

It is a steep drive and a lot of stairs to the top but the views are great. Worth driving up to the top. Seems to be a local graffiti spot but it doesn't effect the views from the top.

By Hooty123 |

The view is spectacular, however do not go if you are a nervewous driver. The road is well paved, but very narrow and a very steep grade. Your vehicle needs to be in excellent condition, especially the brakes.

By layton4vb |

A MUST SEE!! Wow what a fantastic view. The road on the way up needs to be upgraded, widened and greatly improved. Very steep in some places and not many shoulders if another vehicle comes up or down. The view from the top is awesome. It was a bit hazy the day we went up there, July 25th, 2018. Bring your Spray paint as you are allowed to spray paint the rocks that are already painted. Do NOT paint anything else.

By Beetle |

I'm sure the veiw from Bell Mountain is beautiful, HOWEVER, I absolutely do not recommend driving to the top. We attempted to drive a van up Shag Rag road and thought we were going to die. It is one lane, mostly no shoulder, cracked pavement, deadly drop offs, and inclines of 50 degrees at least. We got to the point where we were crawling along while stepping hard on the gas. Luckily there was a small gravel shoulder before a sharp turn and an even steeper incline, so we made a very very careful 16 point turn.
Bell Mountain was recommended to us by a local, and we are convinced it's some sort of sick joke they play on us tourists.
Do NOT drive up Shag Rag.
If I could select 0/5 I would.

By Glenda H |

Bell Mountain was the place recommended by the B&B owners, to see the sunset. Highly recommend you make the time to go. The road is extremely narrow and you can drive all the way to the top.

By shellseeker2000 |

The drive up the mountain is wild, but well worth the trip! The road is windy and narrow in spots, so be cautious.
Once you are at the top you will be in awe. From either the landing or all the way up the steps, there are many, it is an amazing sight to behold. This was our 4th trip up and the only disappointment was the graffiti on the STEPS. The rock graffiti has been there forever, the steps were a act of vandalism by foolish people.
None the less, the 360’ view is breathtaking.

By Mickey |

The road is paved all the way to the top. It is very steep and the road is narrow. You may have to pull off some to let other vehicles pass. The view is worth it. The graffiti is not so great, it has its back story. The graffiti has been there longer than there was a true road to get to it. It’s a nice place to see.

By Rodolfo E |

Local friends warned us about the steep road and the need to get out of worn out car to walk the last incline .Wasn’t too bad . Our 2 liter engine worked hard and smelled over heated but got us to lower parking lot . We then walked up the very steep last 400 ft. to the upper parking level with the observation level .

It was an hour before sunset so the sun was hitting us and camera lens from the left . However angling shots and cleaning up on Iphone made photos close to the views we where experiencing . Why wife just stayed seated on a boulder and breathed in the beauty while rambled up Tower to get 360 views.

The graffiti on the old quarry walls were not offensive to us for we have seen urban canvasses in Miami that looked very similar . It is a shame though that urban art mixed in with mountain but it did not get in the way with breathing in the beauty of Lake Chatuge and the mountains

By WhiteX4 |

Amazingly beautiful views of Hiawassee area- the lake, the mountains. Ahhh!
Word of caution, its not an easy drive up there. The road is paved and all but at times it's pretty steep and you have to be constantly vigilant about oncoming cars who may have right of way. If your brakes are subpar, fix them before going up. Use first and second speeds and don't rush - you'll get there eventually.
Its best NOT to go on weekends, because with lots of cars and people parking is scarier than the drive and its best when you have plenty of room to maneuver.
All in all, it is worth the hassle, i cant imagine not being in awe.
By the way, be prepared to see alot of graffiti. Be ready for it and don't let it ruin your mood and experience.

By holp25 |

Perfect little trip if you're in the area. People were paragliding when we went and we noticed people doing it again several days later. Very cool to watch them take off from the top of the mountain. Worth the drive up the mountain and the walk to the top! Don't miss this if you're in the area!

By Vicky A |

We saw this rated as place to visit. The most positive thing I can say, is that we are alive! We attempted this trek in a minivan. We probably made it halfway up when we drove around a very sharp turn and encountered a small SVU that was heading back down. The SUV driver looked as terrified as we were! There was no place to pull over in this section of road. We pulled off the road on the mountain side and the SUV slowly inched past us. We almost got stuck, but were finally able to pull back onto the road, but banged ip our under-carriage a bit due to the large rocks. We thankfully found a place to turn around. This may be great for someone in a Jeep who also loves a thrill. For our family, there is no view that is worth potentially risking our lives. If you have a fear of heights, or of meeting cars on a one-lane road with a huge drop-off on one side, then this is NOT the mountain for you!

By Kathy P |

We went for sunset and were not disappointed! The view from the top is spectacular anyway, sunset made it almost magical. I’m giving it a 4/5 rating only because the road leading up to it is very steep and narrow. With an average 12.5% grade, getting there was a bit of an adventure. Road shoulders were low and obscured by fallen leaves. I’m not even sure they were even there in spots. The parking area is at the bottom of a very steep climb- fortunately it is paved. The view, once you get to the top, is beautiful!

An impressive lake and mountain area in northwest Georgia. Great fishing, boating, and hiking areas.
The North Georgia Mountain Fair.is a music festival, museum of mountain life, and carnival rides for the kids. Extremely adorable.

By MN Girl in GA |

First visit here. Great views on all sides, but the road is a little scary to drive. We parked below and walked up.

By Vick F |

The view on Bell Mountain is 360 and so beautiful. The negative is the graffiti that is all over the rocks; handrails even the plaque giving information about elevation etc. The road accessing the top is treacherous although paved it is basically one vehicle. The lower parking area is 300 ft from top if you walk up from there. You can drive to very top to park if elderly or handicapped. There is no barriers around this area. We went on a weekday about 8 in morning and we were only ones there. They do have different hours due to covid. You won't be disappointed in the view.

By Jeanniemol1 |

A young server had recommended going up to the top of bell mountain, warned us of the curvy roads. If you’re a nervous driver DO NOT GO! I have a small SUV & drove up really slow. There are a lot of motorcycle groups that ride up there. I got to what I thought was the top, parked & there is a 300 foot steep hill to climb up to get to the top. Once I got there, there is another parking lot up there. The view is spectacular!

By nickikim07 |

Officially known as Bell Mountain Park and Historical Site according to the Towns County website but many refer to it online as Bell Mountain. It was once known as Bell Knob. I love Instagram for all active and nature photos. I came across pics of gorgeous views.

Nowadays, I like to do some research before heading out to the location. Mainly because I have a small car. I have gone to trails that were all curvy, narrow, and gravel which didn't make my Camry happy. Plus I also don't like to drive since I am nervous around those curves. Not to mention parking spaces or lack of or even fees. I did my research, talked to a few others who have gone and decided to go.

Bell Mountain is located in Hiawassee, near NC. It may seem like it is far away but since I've been hiking normally in North Georgia, it isn't too bad. The more and more I go towards the NC border area, the more I realized that all the pretty hiking and waterfall places are there.

But because I'm not doing a waterfall hiking trip this time and a mountain. I want a gorgeous view on top! I keep reading about 360 views. I am down.

The trail to Bell Mountain is behind a residential area. You will see signs when you have to make a left or right and the left will say private property and you know you have to make a right, the roads are very narrow here and steep. Honestly, you have to have a good car and drive carefully. There will be another mile until you get to a parking lot. It's all paved and lovely. You can tell the paved road and parking area is new. There are two parking lots. One is closer to the top but the road going up is really steep. Some people park at the first parking lot and walk up to the to parking lot to get some fitness on. That's what we did.

Oh by the ways, it is free to come. Yes, free parking too.

The walk up is very steep think of the most strenuous part at Stone Mountain. Yeah, it's like that. It's short but once you start to see the American flag, you know you are almost there. Once you see graffiti, don't be alarm. You are are at the right place. Bell Mountain is known for its graffiti. It is welcome. You see a sign that welcomes it but has some restrictions. Just don't spray paint on the stairs.

There are stairs to go to the top. There are a few overlooks on top and one on the bottom. Early in the morning, you see nothing but fog covering up the lake. Once you stay a little longer, it will slowly pass and you will see the gorgeousness. The views are breathtaking and totally worth it. When I hike, I'm all about views. 360 degree views of Hiawassee and Lake Chatuge.

The stairs is really not that bad. If you could handle Tallulah or Amiacola, this is a breeze for you. No kidding.

We stayed probably close to an hour just walking and exploring. We even brought our spray paints to leave our marks. I do my research before I come.

I am a fan of Bell Mountain. There is no bathroom at the top though but it's okay. Just know this before you come. If you're a guy, it's no problem for you but ladies, I'm warning you. Oh yeah, no trash can either so keep your trash in your vehicle.

Again, the narrow, steep road leading to the parking lot is a huge incline too. When we got back, two cars overheated and you could smell it walking back to the bottom parking lot. As we left to go back home, we saw a group of people walking, I guess they didn't want to to risk and take a chance to burn out their transmission. I was wondering where they would be parking. I saw a few vehicles parked in a small gravel area right before the turn to the narrow, steep road next to the residential private property.

Despite the graffiti for those who may not agree about it, the views are still totally worth coming for. Just know and be cautious when you come. It is totally worth it.

By SEB |

Bell Mountain is such an interesting place to see. The graffiti on the side of the mountain just gives it more character.
Standing up on the mountain and looking out is amazing how much you can see from up there. Worth the drive to see the views.

By CClemons1 |

Well worth the rather hair raising drive up the mountain on this mostly single lane hairpin turn road! Pay no attention to the two closed signs along the way, they were open! And it was well worth the nail biter ride! You can park in the first parking lot you come to and walk the short distance the rest of the way or drive all the way to the top & park. The views are simply AMAZING! Better than Brasstown Bald mountain! The only let down is all the graffiti! Rather sad really.

By Old Panther |

Bell Mountain offers an incredible view of the surrounding lake and country side. BUT to get up to it be prepared for a (little bit of a) scary ride due to a road for one car traffic with slight pull offs when you DO meet opposite direction cars! Some blind curves along with it BUT all worth it for the view. Basically 360 view if you take the stairs all the way up to the observation tower deck once you arrive at the parking area. Small area at that but was room day we were there. Lot of graffiti on all the rocks but didn’t see any ugly and probably a local tradition since were several 2021 graduate ones. Sort of adds to the allure of it. No facilities at the top. Several steps up observation tower but doable. Again a reward for doing so. Highly recommend this due to the view in spite of the hairy trip to get up there!

By RogerWilco |

Access road goes straight up the mountain; go slow and wait for good weather. Best time to go is early morning.

By Kathy P |

A must see. Gorgeous views. The ride up is scary but well worth it. Seen eagles soaring which was amazing and breathtaking

By caseyHiawassee_Ga |

Absolutely beautiful Vista of Lake Chatuge! Drive up not bad but sometimes really busy.
Parking is limited. The lake is gorgeous.

By Plumamazing |

This place is beautiful. It really is. Its tough on your automobile to get up the mountain, and your glutes, once you hike up 0.25 miles to the view. But so worth it.

One view is mountains with a sunset and the river. The other, picturesque mountains. Pics I've taken look fake with a backdrop. Insanely beautiful.

Great place to take a breathe of fresh air, and think about life, and where you're gonna move your chess piece in life, next.

I wouldn't leave Hiawassee without visiting here. Even a pregnant couple, walked up the small but steep mountain, to enjoy God's Creation.

By Anna R |

We went here yesterday on New Year's Eve and this view did not disappoint. One side you have a overlook of the town/water and the other of the mountain hills. The drive up is very curvy and narrow. Near the top there's a parking lot that has a sign saying you can walk the rest of the way or drive your car at your own risk. Definitely drive your car the rest of the way, it is literally like one turn away and there is another huge parking lot and your there. This should be the number one spot!

By dawg39705 |

REmarkable view of the lake and town area, all the rocks have been painted by the local youth which is somewhat unique

By mgcaekdb |

I was fairly surprised at the entry way to this attraction. For a highly visited place, the way you get there is pretty sketchy. It's a single lane a lot of the way so you really have to pay attention way ahead for other vehicles coming down, and it's pretty steep.

But when you make it to the top, the view is pretty amazing! It's a must see!

I only gave it a 4 rating due to the way you have to get there.

By deboheaton |

Highly rscommend. We walked the 300f ft.to get up there, but you can drive...took many pics. You feel on top of the world!

By Jo RBF |

I'm sure the view is worth the trip ... but our car was not worthy to make the VERY steep climb. The "road" to the top is one lane and is not laid out in a zig zag manner to ease the difficult climb. We're not thrill seekers, so we turned around and went down because it seemed perilous. PS there's not a lot of places to turn around except in a few resident's driveways.

By SunsMcBuns |

The moutain top has one of the nicest views in North Georgia! The views of the lake below and the mountains on the other side of the lake are just spectacular. I really enjoyed the collaborative visitor graffiti at the peak. It really stood out! I can't wait to visit again!

By Terry W |

We wanted exercise, so parked in the lower parking lot and walked up...it was VERY steep, but very doable even for us 66 yr. olds. After resting walked up the 120 some stairs for the spectacular view. Well worth the effort. If you don't want to climb, you can park at the top and view is still awesome without climbing the stairs. We went twice. Clear days are best of course to get the best view. The graffiti didn't really bother us, though makes one wonder what's with people.......

By Ruthanne P |

we took our 2 year old daughter, you can drive to the top or hike. driving was best for us. she was amazed at the view.

By james628 |

This is a hidden off the beaten path gem. One lane narrow paved road to the top so be aware of approaching vehicles while driving up or back down. There are pull offs for passing without any problem. The wide range views at the top were amazing. Many of the rocks on top are spray painted very colorful but now there are warning signs prohibiting painting which seem to be ignored. There are viewing platforms at the upper parking area. Easy but steep drive up well worth a visit.

By Teresa L |

We were staying in a rental on Bell Mountain so early on a Wed. morning it was first on our list of places to go. Well we didn't pay attention to the signs directing us to Bell Mountain Park so we ended up on a private drive/gravel road which I suspect is where MariefromGeorgia, an earlier poster, was before she gave up and turned around. We did finally see the sign and made it to the top. It's paved all the way to two paved parking areas. Though our Honda Pilot made it fine, my husband wasn't real happy about the steep climb and wouldn't drive from the lower parking area to the upper, because of the caution sign. I should have had him walk up, okay it, and I could have driven it instead of putting my poor knees through that torture. The view is awesome and probably would have been even better from the multi-step platform at the top. At that time of day we were the only car on the lower parking and only one car was on the upper. About the graffiti, I'll just quote my grandmother, "People's names and monkey faces are always found in public places".

By Paul W |

A must see if you are in the area. Beautiful views of the entire area and Lake Chatuge. Steep drive up, but well worth the trip.

By Lauriegwen |

While the road up is paved, it is steep and narrow. Drive slowly! Parking is limited, but the view is fabulous. It is unfortunate that the locals have tagged almost every surface with spray paint because the area is unsightly. There is a higher lookout area only accessible by a long flight of stairs.

By Roy P |

Long ride up to the top, but well worth it. Unfortunately the rocks at the top are covered in graffiti. Viewing platform at the very top above the parking area.

By Luschoer |

Beautiful views from the top. Road has been paved to the top - narrow and steep but doable. Graffiti mountain area is interesting and unexpected.

By MChoney |

I don’t know how to rate this. If you can stomach the drive up and down an extremely narrow and two way road that winds up extremely high its an amazing view. I just don’t think I can do it again.

By Trab |

Although the one lane road to the top of Bell Mountain was paved it was not for the faint of heart, but well worth it.

By Dlipp |

The accesses Bell Mountain is a paved blacktop 1.5 lane road. There are several switch-backs, hair-pin turns and STEEP. The last stretch to the top is the steepest. I drive an Tundra and at times I could not see the road ahead of me. With that said, the drive is worth it. The painted rocks and ledges is very colorful (to say the least). The drive down the mountain is less harrowing.

By CurlyQ21601 |

You will not regret the trek to the top! Incredible views. Go at sunset if you can. Parking is limited and the drive up to the top it tight. Be prepared to have to "pull-off" but also don't fall off the side of the mountain. If you don't want to go to the top there is one smaller parking lot about 500 feet or so from the top. Too bad such a beautiful spot is littered with graffiti.

TONS OF STEPS!!

By Joanne L |

The drive is a bit of a challenge, but the view, once you get to the top of the mountain, is breathtaking. You can see three states - Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina. The view of the lake, the land and the mountains is spectacular.

By Shivang B |

If you have 5 people loaded in a sedan you might want to skip this spot. Get SUV if you have decent size group cause the turns and height on this road is crazy. It's hard to believe this size road is for 2 cars. Driving up give way to people coming down as it's harder to brake while downhill. Once on top final stretch gives warning that U SHOULD NOT DRIVE :D but if u have a SUV don't bother. They have done amazing job on this place the graffiti was interesting. Certainly worth the drive and will come back again.

By Jayjay099 |

When and IF you get to the top of Bell Mountain, the views are some of the best in the state of Georgia:) And it's FREE! Getting to the top is the problem:( It's a lane and half at best:( With few areas to pull over if you meet someone coming down:( How steep can it get? A cycle went down going around a curve so I stopped:) Yet, when trying to go again my tires were just spinning:( Had to back up and get a running start near a ledge:( This is NOT for the faint of heart:) We parked at the second level and walked up the final steep 100 yard grade:( There is a sign warning you about driving up the last 100 yards:( But many a car/trucks still do:) Good luckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

By FLBill |

This is a must see. If you can look past the sometimes vulgar vandalism spray painted on the rocks, the views on all sides are truly incredible! It's beautiful anytime but the sunset is spectacular!

By sschass7 |

It takes some effort to get up this very steep windy road, make sure your car is in good order before attempting it.

By Florascope |

Going East of Hiawassee on US 76, take "Shake Rag Rd." between the two filling stations on your left. Drive on the completely asphalted road all the way to the top of Bell Mountain where you will get a spectacular view of Lake Chatuge.
You can climb up the newly built stairs to the viewing platforms on the very top of the mountain. Also notice the pure white quartz rocks around and just before you reach the top. This was the reason the road was originally built over 100+ years ago to mine the very pure quartz rocks.

By RetiredandRoaming53 |

Amazing. The road to it needs some work but from my understanding it used to only be accessible by hiking or jeeps. I will be visiting this place again and again!

By Rachelld66 |

As you plan to visit be aware the access road is short but very steep and windy and basically one lane. After you park there is a paved steep 100 yard road to take you the rest of the way to the top. The reward when you get to the observation deck is a breathtaking 360 degree view. You can look over Chatuge Lake or the mountains of Towns County. Bell Mountain is owned by Towns County and is a Park and Historical Site open during the day for visitors to enjoy. There is no entry fee and no facilities. Anytime is good to visit but sunsets are especially beautiful viewed from Bell Mountain.

By keekin50 |

Heard about this from a local. I am sure they are having a good laugh. The drive up was insane. It is newly paved, smooth, but the angle of the steep grade is crazy. We were in a honda crv and wondered if it was going to make it. Single lane, barely any shoulder, steep drop off. We parked in the 1st lot and walked up the 300 ft hill to the top. There is a parking lot at the top, with an extremely steep grade. Thought we were going to die!!! The view is spectacular and we were there on a cloudy day. Worth It??? Guess from a natural perspective, found the grafitti a little off putting.

By David B |

I️t is a steep drive up but all paved and well worth the short drive. The views I think are better than what you see at Brasstown Ball. There is a lower parking area but worth the last steep drive up to the top parking.

By GolfTango61 |

A newly paved road (Shake Rag Rd) runs off US 76 East of Hiawassee and traverses all the way up to new parking area at the top of Bell Mountain. A beautiful view from the parking lot platform and area, but if you are hardy, take the 110 steps up to the very top of the peak for the best 360 degree view in Georgia. Clearly visible is nearly all of beautiful Lake Chatuge in GA and NC, Brasstown Bald Mtn (highest point in Ga at 4,784 feet), and the other gorgeous towns, valleys and mountains in the GA/NC area.

By Jan |

Was surprised by the graffiti but heard this was from a long time ago. The drive up is very steep but it was worth the drive up for the views. It would be great to go at Sunrise or Sunset.

By Jesse C |

Since this mountain top view has been acquired by Towns County visitors can drive almost all the way to the top. This is great for physically challenged individuals. There is a viewing platform that takes you to the very top which has stairs. The view from the top of Bell Mountain overlooking Lake Chatuge is spectacular. The park is closed late at night and during winter driving conditions.

Wow and wow! First of all the ride to the top is not for the faint of heart. It is a narrow paved road with alot of steep grades and switchbacks. There are actually mirrors posted so you can see around the corners if someone else is coming the opposite way. We managed in a megacab dually truck so you’ll be fine 👍 There are two parking areas at the top. A short climb and your at the top. Then there is a another set of steps to climb with viewing platforms.

The views are breathtaking! Bell Mountain overlooks Lake Chatuge and Hiawassee. We spent about an hour or so taking photos and reading all the graffiti. I have mixed emotions on the graffiti... but there is some cool history on Bell Mountain. Definitely worth the read.

There did not appear to be any flying restrictions, so we got some amazing drone shots and video.

Don’t miss this gem if you’re in the area.

By MrsBrewster |

I decided to make the 3 hour drive to check out the views. I was not disappointed at all. The views from the top are stunning.

I did have a problem with all of the thousands of gnats at the top observation deck!! OMG I couldn’t even get my picture taken due to fanning the gnats from my face.

The drive getting up there is certainly not for those that aren’t comfortable driving on narrow roads. Certain parts of the road is one lane and there are also very deep curves. Some points you’re not able to see nor pull off for vehicles to pass through.

Important Notice Regarding Access to Shake Rage Road, Hiawassee, GA: This road is exceptionally narrow, barely accommodating a small vehicle, and features steep, unguarded drop-offs of several hundred feet. It is strongly advised that only small, preferably four-wheel drive vehicles attempt to navigate this route. Larger vehicles should not proceed. The absence of warning signs at the beginning of Shake Rage Road presents a significant safety hazard. The visit was horrifying and terrifying!

By fsumtnguy |

Towns County has paved the way to the pinnacle of Bell Mountain, and there is ample parking too...just be sure the vehicle you take has good transmission and good brakes. The vista's from the top are simply gorgeous...the spray painted rocks are a tragedy...and that signs invite more vandalism is simply reckless. It fits in with the 40+ thrift and second-hand stores that make Hiawassee the Flea Market capitol of Georgia. Shame for what "could be".

By TouristKat7 |

You have to be careful Driving up to the mountain since the road is really narrow. Park and walk the last quarter mile up. Then you can take the stairs and walk all the way to the top. The views are just stunning!

By Lori W |

For us this is the best view in the area. To see the whole lake is just wonderful. Road is steep but very doable Love it here

By Sylvia C |

Be sure your car is in good working order when you attempt to drive up to the parking lot, as it is pretty steep. From there it is a healthy hike up about a hundred steps to a beautiful new observation deck. From there you will see all the way from the North Carolina mountains as well as Hiawassee, East Young Harris, (North Georgia), including Brasstown Bald, the highest mountain in North Georgia, towering over 4,700 feet. Also sprawled across the landscape is beautiful Lake Chatuge. The breeze is always refreshing and the view is inspiring!

By JimfromGA |

Have been here many times before, but not since the county paved the road. What a wonderful place. You don't need 4 wheel drive now to gain access to one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. (Just a little nerve, it is a narrow one lane road with passing lanes but no guard rails.) You don't want to miss this place, took friends and co-workers that were in town and they were amazed.

By CT |

This was difficult to rate! The views at the top are indeed wonderful, but the drive up (for us) was terrifying! The one lane, narrow road leading up/down has very few turn offs if you meet a car-which we did. The grade is quite steep! Once we got to the top, we were rewarded with a spectacular view. Unfortunately. we couldn't relax knowing what was ahead with the drive back down! It would be a much better experience if the traffic up/down could be monitored in some way to ensure safety and a better experience. I wouldn't recommend this drive because, for us, it was scary! It's safer to just enjoy the pictures. :-)

By JeffBreedlove |

Be warned it’s a narrow road to get to the top and you have to be extremely careful - no joke - but it’s safe if you pay attention

Once at the top the views are stunning - there is a platform 110 easy steps one can also go up - do so - there is also a large area with a few large rocks that people go up

This is a brilliant place

Go enjoy

By Leann S |

Best thing we have done in Hiawassee Georgia. We went at sunset and it was spectacular. Drive was a little steep but would do it again. My husband does not like heights and this was hard for him to get out of car.

By Deb S |

We were staying in Hiawassee and this is such an easy trip up the mountain ⛰. The views are great and worth the walk up the stairs to the top!

By martha j |

Very interesting ride up a narrow steep road but well worth it for the view. The information signage had been defaced so information on the site was not available. So glad we researched available tourist sites. Would never have expected this to be right off the main road.

By Justin J |

As a local who grew up living on bell mountain I can tell you, all the reviews on here complaining about how the graffiti has ruined this "Natural Wonder". Bell mountain is not a "natural wonder", it was once a mountain top that was quarried for mica way back when. Once that closed down it was a destination for locals with enough 4 wheel drive and ground clearance to go and paint the rocks and watch the fireworks on the 4th of July. It was pretty much a tradition that if you went you painted. Now a lot of memorials were painted up there when friends and love ones died. As to the cliff on the backside, to my knowledge at least 3 people have died up there over the years (2 jumped and 1 fell off the backside). If the paint bothers you I suggest returning to Florida.

The county completely ruined it by building those decks and paving the road up there. The traffic on a single lane road is horrendous with people who have no business driving in the mountains (much less on that road) trying to go up there. Mountain LAW, if you meet a car and there is no room to pull off the side, you both STOP, the car facing up the hill backs down the hill to the nearest pull-off. the car facing down the hill then continues past. SLOW DOWN whether you are going up or down DRIVE SLOW and LOOK.

Pro-Tip if you happen to be up there at night or after dark grab the white/pink rocks and smash them together, they will spark/light up.

Insider Tip if you shine a light to the tree at the base of the cliff you will see the reflector of the motorcycle that got launched off there and stuck in that tree years ago,

My wife and I were recently in Hiawassee and since it was a perfectly clear day we decided to visit and are happy we got the opportunity. There is a paved road up (about a mile to the top) which is steep with a lot of twists. It is also extremely narrow. There are very small pullovers provided along the route in the event you meet another car. As you approach the summit you will reach the first parking lot. You can park here and walk up the final 300 yards (very steep incline) to your destination or you can drive up. We drove up and parked (lot is very small maybe 7 cars). There are multiple signs informing you that painting is now illegal but obviously it wasn’t in the past (Interesting Graffiti on all the rocks). At an elevation of 3424 feet the view from the parking lot is fantastic. For an even more spectacular view I walked the additional 150 steps up to the top observation platform. The 360 degree views of Lake Chatuge with the mountains as the backdrop are nothing short of breathtaking. Add to your “Must Do” list.

By Carlo E |

Possibly the most scenic views in all of Georgia. Definitely a must see if in the area. Breathtaking views. Staircases lead to multiple viewing platforms However, be prepared for an extremely narrow winding road to the top. Have no idea what takes place when two cars approach one another from opposite directions. Enjoy.

By Lynn B |

Enjoy incredible views of Lake Chatuge, Towns County and North Carolina. This is a must stop for all those willing to brave the 1 lane steep grade road. These breathtaking views are amazing all day long but there is something extra special about sunsets up there! Leave a piece of your story on the graffiti approved rocks but please, respect this beautiful lookout and keep your paint off of the roadways and lookout deck stairs and decking.

By Gary G |

Not for faindhearted that are challenged by mountain driving or heights but very exhilarating.a one time experience.it helps to have strong motored car.. stay in low gear but stay with it to the top! Or at least to lower parking lot. No turn around places till then.

By Joan A |

Ok, we were told that we needed to see this mountain. There is a paved road all the way to the top. It was middle of the day, so we drove to the topmost parking area. And it's all straight up! We had read a bit about the area and the graffiti, but were surprised at the amount of it. And the view...breathtaking! And that doesn't really describe it. I went to the lower overlook, husband did the 115 steps up to the newer lookout. You can absolutely see for miles! You can see the lake, the town, everything! Amazing, don't miss this. Put the car in lower gear and drive on up! Don't forget your paint, it's okay to add to the graffiti as long as you follow the posted rules.

By Gwen1051 |

This was a crazy scary drive, on a one lane road to the top! But the view is so worth it. We had a little trouble with naps and flyies while there.

By Benjamin M |

I've been to the summit of bell mountain 3 times. Once before the road was paved (that was intense) and twice more recently. If it's not a cloudy/wet day, the drive up, which in and of itself isn't THAT bad as long as you keep moving on the extremely steep inclines. If it's a wet day, do not stop moving or lose momentum or you will definitely spin your tires near the last incline, but that said, you may as well turn around if it's a rainy day. If you have four wheel drive, the drive up shouldn't be too bad though.

All that said, the views are very much worth it on a non-rainy day. Personally, they top the views from nearby Brasstown bald any day of the week. I definitely recommend if you think your car can take it.

By Susan M |

When we first heard of Bell Mountain, it was only accessible by a 4 WD vehicle. We recently learned that Towns County now owns it, made a park at the top and paved the road all the way so that any vehicle can get to the top. I took my sister and cousin up and all they could say was WOW! The views of Lake Chatuge and the mountains are amazing! This is a place I will take all our visitors to!

By alpvy1 |

The trip to the top of this place is an adventure and a thrill ride in itself. The road is only wide enough for one car most of the way up the mountain with a few places where you can pass another one coming down. Several times going up the hill our tires “spun” because it was so steep. (Use low gear on your car, better yet go in a truck or 4x4). I recommend making the trip because once you get there the views are breathtaking in the thrill of making it to the top is beyond FUN!!! Just read the photo plaque attached...

By rdpine |

Make sure your car brakes are working. Drive up is pretty steep. But worth it when you get there. Beautiful views from the top.

By Rhanda H |

It's an amazing view once you get to the top. We decided to drive up until the "drive at your own risk" sign. Then we parked and walked up the steeeeeeeep incline to the top. Once we got there we realized that driving the rest of the way isn't a big deal at all. We should have perserved our energy and drove. The view from the top is AMAZING. Take spraypaint and add your own touch to the masterpiece!

By sschass7 |

Be sure your car is up for a trip UP Bell Mountain! But it is totally worth it. There is a nice parking lot, from which you take about a hundred steps up a new stair to several new decks. The 360 degree view from there is amazing, and you can see North Georgia (including Brasstown Bald, the highest mountain in GA), North Carolina mountains, beautiful Lake Chatuge, and many square miles of National Forest (the Appalachian trail is just to the South). No charge for a great experience!

By Dee22321205 |

Be careful with the drive up and down worth the drive. Bring spray paint best to go while sun is out no street lights and lot of trees blocking natural light

By MLPS315 |

The day we were to visit Bell Mountain was very rainy. We knew there would be no view but decided to take the drive since everything I read said how scary the road up was. Turned out to not be nearly as bad as anticipated, even with the rain. Was very narrow and twist turny in places but we made it to the top with no problem. All we saw were the graffiti rocks and clouds so we promised ourselves we would make the trip again on a sunny day!

By EmeraldLoki |

The view was amazing! The weather was perfect. The graffiti made me sad. Why can't people just leave nature's beauty alone?

By Rachel W |

Well worth the drive up the one way road. Beautiful views from every angle. Great place to watch the sunset.

By shellseeker2000 |

We drove to the parking area before the last 300ft climb, long 300 feet! Almost straight up. Drive if you can, to the top. The view is amazing and well worth the crazy ride to get there. Once you park, walk the steps to the viewing areas, just wow!
Talk your camera and if it is warm, a bottle of water.

By Thoracias |

We've been going up Bell for years, way back before it was paved and it was serious 4WD only. It's easy for even little cars to get there now and the decks they've built are magnificent for the views. Go on a good clear day and you can see for miles!

By Kirb Appeal Homes |

Gorgeous views from the top! It is a very steep and somewhat scary drive up and back down, but it was definitely worth the drive. The 360 degree view was picturesque. There were 8-10 hawks flying around the rock top which added to the serenity. The graffiti is somewhat cool to look at but mostly because you wonder how they got to some of those spots without falling off. There were a few offensive paintings that should be covered or painted over, but overlooking that, our visit was very cool. The steps that lead to the top have landings along the way so that you could rest - which was nice. :)

By Thomas W |

What a view. The old days required a hike to the top but now it’s car access the whole way. Great views of Lake Chatuge. Viewing decks make it more accessible.

By Jersey J |

Great views all around Bell Mountain. Was very steep to climb the road even in a jeep. Motorcycles are not on the agenda of going here.

By Jean K |

This offers a very beautiful view once you get to the top of the mountain. It is a cardio workout to hike the last 300 feet. Or you can drive all the way to the top. I think I would rename it Graffiti Mountain now, because every rock, and even the driveway has been painted. In its own way, the colors are pretty, but what a shame to ruin the natural beauty of Bell Mountain!

By Maureen S |

This was by far the most dangerous and frightening road we've ever ridden on the bike, and we've been riding together for over 30 years. I thank God that my husband has 47 years' motorcycle experience, or I have no doubt we would have wrecked. The road was ETREMELY steep and winding, much, much longer than we expected, with hairpin turns, leaves all over the road, oncoming cars that nearly knocked us off, and NO place to turn around until just before the summit. Even then, turning around was extremely hazardous due the the steepness of the narrow blacktop. The so-called "road" is narrower than most driveways, and definitely NOT safe for any type of cruiser. If you're on a light dirt bike you might be okay -- IF you're a really good rider. But for anyone with a heavy bike, this extremely perilous road is NOT to be attempted. It was utterly terrifying!

By MariefromGeorgia |

The office lady at my lodge told me that Bell Mountain was a "must see" attraction so I left early that morning to locate it. I found Shake Rag Rd and started up that vertical incline. It is gravel, one-lane steepest trail I have tried to follow. I drive a 2015 Nissan Versa built for gas milage and not power so my engine was being taxed from the git go and on top of that my fear of heights, then just 1 1/2 miles into it, to my horror, my car starts to slide backwards! I had just seen the first of the painted rocks and made the first turn around as fast as I could! Now, to be fair, I am sure it has a terrific view BUT, I didn't want to flip over either! I am content to view other people's pics but I just want to warn people with light weight cars that you need some power to get up that steep, gutted out, rocky, tiny, one lane, deep holes, so dangerous-that- there are MIRRORS in almost every driveway of each home up there. Also, if you have a fear of heights like I do(even though I left there and had no trouble driving up to Brasstown Bald, the highest mountain in north Georgia), maybe this "goat trail" is not for you. I can see why it is popular for off road thrill seekers. Thanks but no thanks. From other peoples' pics the views offering 360 degree views of Hiawassee and the beautiful Lake Chatuge(I stayed in their Lodge for TWO nights!). It is covered with spray paint which some say gives it "charm". It may hae been nice to make it to the top, but my nerves and tiny Nissan Versa just could not go more than a mile and a half.

By Debora B |

You can see forever! Paved road and parking lot all the way to the top (years ago you needed a 4 wheel drive to get up there.

By Dave Avery |

Our go to spot for visiting friends and family. Birds eye view of Lake Chatuge and far off lands. No entry fee.

By rtc830 |

Excellent view of Lake Chatuge from summit. Road to summit is narrow, one lane road so be warned. Take can of spray paint with you as you will want to leave your initials on the rocks.

By chiefjack2018 |

Great view from here. I like it better that Brass Town bald because you can actually see houses etc. The road up is very steep and not for a lot of flat landers. It's a real shame that some people have spray painted every thing up there.

By jeffstaples33 |

Breathtaking views of Lake Chatuge and the North Georgia and North Carolina mountains. One of the most beautiful places I have ever visited.

By Aubrey C |

Well worth the drive up the narrow road and then climb up the stairs to see the views! My breath was taken away.

By Pabooboo |

Fun trip to the top of Bell Mountain. Follow the directions posted to get to the top of the mountain..be ready for a tight one lane road that you will need to navigate around other drivers..but it is worth the challenge. Go all the way to the top, it is paved with plenty of parking (state or county did a great job). It is "ok" to tag or spray paint the rocks...and 99% of what is done up there is pretty cool...but be warned that there are some other symbols that would be expected when you let people spray paint. Great views, well designed parking and signage....fun outing for the adventurous...bring a spray paint can and go nuts....responsibly please for the little ones ;]

By Don P |

The road up the mountain was recently paved but it is very narrow and steep in some places. The view is as good as you can get in the area. Very impressive and gives you a perspective of how large and expansive the lake is. You'd never get that from the road view at the bottom.

By R M |

Awesome view. Thanks to the local individual who out of his generosity paved the road and constructed the viewing platforms. Hopefully the people who like to write graffiti will keep it on the rocks and boulders and not on the nice platforms.

By jeaninebox |

Beautiful view of Hiawassee if you can make the steep drive getting to top.Great place to take pictures.

By Momzilla17 |

Locals or visitors, everyone needs to make the drive to the top parking area of Bell Mountain. The view is breath-taking. Park and then take the stairs to the very tip top to enjoy a 360 degree view of all the loveliness that the mountains and lake have to offer. This is a must do!

By KathyJean W |

Awesome site. Worth the trip! Long and winding road, very steep. Be sure the car can handle the incline and curves. Going down was like a natural roller coaster.

By juneayal |

you just can"t visit the area and not go to bell mountain. from the very top you can see 360 degree view which is breathtaking. stay long enough or go several times to see how it looks differnt every time!

By jeannejak |

This is a recently opened county park that is situated in Hiawassee on its' highest peak. It has several viewing pkatforms and views from all are spectacular

By jgwisdom |

This place truly has an incredible view when you get to the top. But, getting there is really an adventure. The road narrows to one lane, and is very steep and has many hairpin turns. If you are on two wheels, be aware this is a dangerous ride up and down. Three or four wheels not really an issue, just watch out in the tight turns. The view is worth it. The last 300 feet is basically straight up, and you are warned to give pedestrians the right of way on that last run. The place is close to being ruined by the excessive graffiti, but you can't spoil the view, just ignore the graffiti is my advice, but know before you go, it is bad.

By I Know Places |

The views were absolutely stunning. I was very disappointed with all the graffiti. My two boys loved walking up and climbing up the rocks.

By Nick D |

We were stunned to find this around the corner from our family house in Hiawassee. The views are better than Brasstown Bald. Worth the trip up the steep, narrow winding road.

By Lily L |

Great experience, this view is a gift from God, I feel my body completely light after being in this majestic place, is it a achievement to get there , Just be careful on the road 😅😅

By Montie S |

We own a home in North GA and have a great view. But, there is an even better view that I will drive straight up a mountain for...Bell Mountain. It is a spectacular view of Lake Chatuge and the surrounding area. It is also lots of fun for kids and teens who like to spray paint rocks - legally.

By Clare g |

Awesome panoramic views and scenery. Drive very steep. Make sure your breaks are good Be very careful

By gatorgirl2015 |

What an amazing view! I've been to Hiawassee many times but never knew about Bell Mountain. I'm so glad i found it and can't wait to visit again.

By shf13 |

The view from Bell Mountain was incredible! The drive to get to it was very scary! It is paved but very steep and curvy with no guard-rails. There are places with very little shoulder and drop-offs of hundreds of feet on a single lane road. It was terrifying in places. The address 220 Shake Rag Road is a bit deceiving also. It is well past 220. Please drive with caution! But the view is incredible!

By Christin K |

My husband, brother, sister-in-law, and mother recently stayed in Hiawassee, and interestingly enough on Bell Mountain. Our rental cabin was just at a lower altitude than the top. After visiting Brasstown Bald, we decided to head up to Bell Mountain.

Be aware that this is a steep one lane road, and pull offs are not readily available. We went on a Thursday, so traffic was light. Our cabin was half way up the mountain, so Friday and Saturday we saw a lot of traffic going up and down as we were traveling.

The view up on top is spectacular. We saw hawks circling right above our heads playing in the wind. The view of Lake Chatuge below is stunning, and worth the drive up.

This is the ugly part of the place. Towns County allows people to put graffiti on the boulders. It's NOT pretty. The locals try to say that it is history. It's not history, it's hideous. Nothing justifies defacing those beautiful rocks that way. If you can ignore the ignorance of people who feel like they have to spray paint nature, it's worth a drive up.

By kathy k |

When you get to the top of this mountain the view will take your breath away. We parked at the first parking lot and walked up the steep hill. The drive is a little dangerous but ok if you drive slow and gear down as you go down the mountain. If you are in the area don’t miss this view.

By AfishnamedArthur |

The views are probably better than that of Brasstown Bald. The one lane road is very steep. The graffiti was extremely unattractive to me but not everyone in our group had the same opinion.

By LiveWire6942 |

What a wonderful day watching the folks parasailing over the beautiful lake Chatuge and the mountains with a 360degree panoramic view.
The road is a steep and curvy one lane so you must take care and I must say that I would not take a large touring motorcycle up the road it is dangerous for heavy motorcycles. Parking is good at the very TOP ! I love it on top of Bell Mountains observation platforms. Take binoculars and water.

By Clint D |

My wife and I were In a local antique shop and was asking the workers things to “see” in Hiawassee. They recommended Bell Mtn!

We decided to check it out (the day prior we had visited Brasstown Bald, and to our disappointment, the observation deck there was closed due to trees being down across the road.

We decided we’d give this a shot. We began driving up “ShakeRag Road” and as you get higher up the mountain, the road becomes more narrow. I would have to say, this is the steepest incline I have ever drive up (I’m not the best with heights)

Once we got to the top, we parked at the parking lot just before you reach the peak. If we visit again we will drive on up to the very top (there are several parking spots at the top).

The day was clear and sunny and you could see the outline of all of Lake Chatuge. It was beautiful! At the top there are two peaks, one has a stairway leading to several observation decks that provide great viewing. The other is basically a pathway people have created.

One thing I found funny is there are signs that read “painting is strictly prohibited “ yet every rock up there has been spray painted. Almost like a joke, but it adds color to the scenery.

If you are in Hiawassee, and have an hour or two, and it is a clear day, you must visit Bell Mountain. You will not be disappointed. We were also told that if we were lucky, which we weren’t that day, but they hang glide from that point. Once you are up there it is easy to see how they could. You feel like you are in the clouds!

By Steve K |

If you want unspoiled nature, this is not the place to visit. The graffiti is obviously controversial, but it is colorful and unique, so we enjoyed being up there and getting to see it. The views overlooking Hiawassee and Lake Chatuge (on a clear day, which it was) are definitely awesome, as is the whole 360 degrees panorama. Somewhat disappointing was the fact that there's not a trail up the mountain, but rather a road up to a parking lot at the summit. Would have enjoyed a hiking opportunity there.

By rafael n |

Excellent view of the lake and town. Top of the hill. Place to relax and enjoy the natural environment.

By Christi B |

Steep, curvy road leads you up the mountain to incredible vista view of the surrounding mountains and lakes. Walk the rest of the way to the top - it's worth it!

By Robbie R |

The view is awesome and well worth the trip. It is also a very challenging ride, two up on a Harley dresser. I would not do it again on the bike.

By MountainOma |

This is a must do for any visitor or resident. The view up here is unbelievable if you go on a clear day. Drive all the way up to the small parking lot then go up a few steps to the observation deck and enjoy!

By ChentallyMallenged |

title says it all, I own a Jeep and the good Jeep trails are disappearing in the southeast. It was better as a Jeep trail.

By tburke2743 |

great view - worth the drive up ya just got to try it - easy to reach, narrow at the top but the view the view the view is awesome

By Spencer Jones |

Very cool and beautiful view of Lake Chatuge. The drive was pretty tough. We have a 3 year old Chevy Traverse and the engine started smoking going from the 1st parking area to the parking area closest to the viewing deck area.

By Kay J |

Very steep uphill drive. Don't try in small car. Very scary in RAM truck too. We're locals that go there several times a year. Sad that the beautiful quartz has been so defaced by tagging. Wasn't like that 10 years ago!

By mikeeagle10723 |

Oh my....the view !!! Don't leave Hiawassee without stopping by bell mountain first. It's a steep drive up and back down so be cautious of that.

By unicycle17 |

A must do when in the area. The drive up is impressive as is the ride down but the view on top is incredible! Make sure you take photos!

By Luther S |

The drive is steep , the road is narrow and with people who should not be able to drive , see Mercedes driver who would not pull over . The view is fantastic , but all the "tagging" is disgraceful ! I just wish that kids would have a little more respect , I know thats asking for a lot but , it's worth thr drive . Views forever !

By S S |

Admittedly had I known what the drive was going to be like, I might not have gone up! It's essentially a very steep, curvy one lane road...I think I prayed all the way up and down! Also other drivers seem to be comfortable just flying around the corners as if there might not be another vehicle...The view at the top is indeed stunning. It appears the local youth enjoy graffitting up the local, which really is such a normal small town thing to do, so nothing shocking there. I mean...I imagine if I had to be raised in a small town, maybe I'd do that too.

By Celeste J |

I was amazing to see all the painting. Worth the trip up there. Walk up the stairs foe even a more spectacular view.

By JoelBTraveler |

I visited Bell Mountain for the first time a few days ago. I have been through Hiawassee many times and never knew it was there. The peak of the mountain has been made into a little park type area with a viewing stand probably 60 steps above the 3,400 ft peak. It overlooks Lake Chatuge and the surrounding mountains with a 360 deg. view. Great for photographers. There is no charge nor are there any attendants.

By Rachel C |

The drive is intense. I recommend risking it to drive through the gated area because that is a killer walk and there is plenty of room to park there. Had I not already been out of breath from the steep incline the stunning view would have taken my breath away. It’s gorgeous. Very peaceful and I perfect place to gather your thoughts.

By beach2mountains2017 |

Scary road to get there, even more so than the regular roads, but absolutely beautiful views. A good place for handicapped to enjoy without much effort.

By sarvapriya |

We were told about Bell mountain by a neighbour, who also warned us about the steep road. The road is steep and narrow, only 1 car at a time. But, the views are fantastic. We could not climb up to the topmost viewing platform, but even from the parking lot the views were great.

By Martha B |

The road going up is one lane, cars coming down have to pull over and there is no good pull over areas. The painting on the Rocks is ugly.

By Angela L |

Amazing view over lake Chatuge. Just note the drive up the mountain is incredibly steep, so if this is something that scares you, or if you have a weak transmission, I wouldn't recommend it.

By Ronda V |

Difficult and steep drive up without 4 wheel drive but the panoramic view was amazing. Too bad so much graffiti though!

By Robert G |

It is one of the most spectacular views I have ever seen in Georgia mountains.. the veiw takes in three states. The veiw if the lake of you are right on top of it.. their are stairs if you want to venture up higher to get a breath taking veiw.. road is all paved but has tight switch backs that are narrow at places. Use low gear for last stretch to parking lot..dont lean over!!!!!

The road is paved all the way to the top. It is very steep and the road is narrow. You may have to pull off some to let other vehicles pass. The view is worth it. The graffiti is not so great, it has its back story. The graffiti has been there longer than there was a true road to get to it. It’s a nice place to see.

We spent a couple of hours up on the mountain just looking at the 360 degree views. Take your camera! The drive up the mountain is a little sketchy in some places, but if you take it slow, you'll be fine.

What a steep road to drive up. There are two parking areas. We parked in the lower area and walked up the steep hill.

Now a county park this attraction has well planned viewing platforms to overlook the lake and surrounding country. No restrooms are on site and the stairs to platforms are steep. Spray painting of exposed rocks is allowed creating a sharp contract between natural beauty and man made sleaze.

It is a harrowing ride up to the two-tiered parking lots via a narrow, winding paved access road with houses on it. Once you get to the first parking area, you can choose to walk up the last incline to the upper lot or you can drive to it, but it is STEEP. Once up there, there are several overlooks and many steps to climb but the view is phenomenal. Lake Chatuge spreads out on one side with mountain views on the other. The only drawback for me was the painted rocks. People are permitted to paint them but it doesn't add to the experience for me. Still, it was a great place to visit.

Having climbed to the summit "Back in the day" before it was paved to the top, it is a little disappointing to see all of the trees cleared and all of the sanctioned graffiti. Nevertheless, you won't want to miss it! We went on a holiday weekend recently, and it was a CRAZY drive up! The road is narrow in spots and requires pulling off for incoming traffic.
