Lots of biking and hiking trails, picnic and swimming spots throughout the upper and lower park. Kite flying, golf, horseback riding, frisbee golf, dog walking, fishing, shooting range and observatory for star gazing, lots of photo opportunities!

There are 2 parts to Bidwell Park. Lower Park is close to downtown Chico. The walking trails are hard-packed and you will find people walking, riding bikes, roller blading as well as riding horses. Several trails are along side the creek. It's always cooler under the trees in the summer heat. The Upper Bidwell also has trails for walking, biking and riding your horse. However, in the summer months get out early before the heat.

It's always great to walk through the park when visiting Chico. It has been closed to traffic on the North end but remains accessible near town with plenty of parking.

We started out around the Horseshoe Lake and hiked the Lower Trail to the Yahi Trail to Bear Hole. Very scenic hike. About 4 miles roundtrip. Bear Hole was beautiful and lots of fun at the same time. The kids loved climbing on the rocks. If it were the summer time, swimming there looks like it would be a blast. You can drive directly to Bear Hole by car, but its on a gravel road. If we had another day here, we would have loved to visit Salmon Hole and Brown's Hole.

I have yet to see the entire park, as it's quite large.
We typically drive to Upper Bidwell, and then hike from near the Observatory parking lot. Hiking back up into the park, starting with Monkey Face outcropping is very nice. I only go here on reasonable weather days. For me it wouldn't be fun on a hot day.
Hike back on the higher trails, for nice views of the area.
Then work your way down the stream and take the trail that runs there back to the parking area.
Great walking / hiking....Enjoy

This is really a spectacular park. The oak trees are incredible. Enjoy this huge park! (and try to figure out where Robin Hood was filmed.)

I take my two dogs off leash several times a week to upper park where they can go swimming in the creek. I also go bike riding through lower park and go walking with a friend while enjoying the shady tree lined paths. It's very relaxing.

Bidwell Park is divided into 2 sections--lower park has a paved road around the flat and level perimeter, picnic areas, playground, and a unique swimming pool made by damming the creek that flows through the park. HUGE trees provide shade, scenic creek flows through, natural beauty augmented by unobtrusive man-made amenities. Fall is especially beautiful with trees changing colors. Upper Park is totally natural and located in the foothills above lower park. Much more open space and areas for hiking, climbing, mountain biking, paragliding, swimming in the creek's holes formed by ancient lava flows. Wildlife viewing (including the wild local college students!), and ability to feel far from civilization. Experience nature at its finest and most preserved. Views, views, views!

It was charming and relaxing, pet friendly environment.. Highly recommended to everyone to visit! Amazing and beautiful as well.

We love Bidwell Park, so peaceful! Perfect spot for a walk in Lower Park or a hike in Upper Park. The fall is especially beautiful!

Bidwell Park is one of the largest city parks in the United States. Today, it is eleven miles long and runs along Little Chico Creek. It was given to Chico by Annie Bidwell, widow of Civil War General John Bidwell. It has a wide variety of things to see and do. At one mile, closest to downtown Chico, there is a natural swimming hole with a concrete bottom and tubes underneath that permit the free migration of Spring run salmon upstream. On its south side are a number of picnic tables and picnic areas for friends, families and groups. Further up the south bank of Little Chico Creek is Caper Acres, a collection of quirky houses, small rises and pipes allowing children to play to their heart's desire. There are multiple slides and swings, enough to exhaust young children in this special place!
On both sides of the creek are paved walking and bike paths. On the north side of the creek are dirt paths popular with joggers and also equestrians. One of the most special aspects of Bidwell Park's history is that it was the location for the filming of much of Errol Flynn and Olivia De Haviland's 1937 classic movie, Robin Hood. So while here, you can enjoy the park's scenic beauty while strolling in Sherwood Forest. This is a special place much loved by Chicoites and a must see destination for anyone visiting Chico

One of the largest municipal parks in California, over 3500 acres of natural beauty ! Great place to walk and bike, as the road is closed to traffic most of the day.Trees, trees, trees. Lower Park has a pool created by the creek running through a cement channel, the water is always moving, untreated, refreshing. Tons of picnic areas, many suitable for groups but the single table sites right by the creek offer rare peace and quiet. Baseball diamond, children's playground, equestrian trails, performance area (Shakespeare in the Park - YAY!) Upper Park is wild and natural, though some recreational development. This is a very special place.

You must check out the great swimming hole with the water that flows through. Get on the bridge that crosses the creek for super photo ops. It's an actual creek flowing through town and this large pool was created. Pretty unique!

Great place to run, camp, picnic, bike, or workout. It's got a running trail, roads large enough for cars to get through, separate bike trails, a giant neighborhood pool, camp sites, tables for picnics, and even a obstacle workout course with different fitness stations along a trail (which I thought was genius). Lots of shade to keep the sun from beating down on you too. Overall, fantastic park.

After Thanksgiving what a nice relaxing walk through a very nice piece of timbered park land. Easy wallking trials down to a nice stream.

This place is so cool, there are walking, bike riding and horse trails. I was told it is approximately 11 miles long...left in a fairly natural state. Picnic tables situated everywhere. Public washrooms that are clean! There is a swimming pool there with a cement bottom and sides that is bigger than a football field and in the summer they divert the water and clean it every Thursday. The pool is fed by a small river so the water is constantly being filled. At the end where it runs out there is a salmon step for spawning fish. The trees are humongous and they look like cement? Apparently they shed their bark and the trees are very brittle at times breaking just from getting so big. This park is in the middle of Chiko and it was donated by a lady for public to enjoy.

Great two family vacation. Enjoyed a hike and kids had fun playing in the water even though the water was cold. Beautiful there, will be back some day.

This place is what movie producers think Sherwood Forest should look like. I very beautiful place to wade, swim, picnic, walk, run, bike ride, relax . . . .

This park is amazing. There is so much to do at this park. I take my boys to play in the huge playground that they have. In the summer time we go swimming there and it's a great place for a great peaceful walk or a nice run on all the trails that have a beautiful scenery.

this is a great place do have a daily walk. And as you walk through the park don't forget to take in the beautiful views.

Lots of trails to choose from. Both paved and unpaved. Dog friendly with off leash options in the morning.

Bidwell Park is one of the largest metropolitan parks in the country in a fairly small town. Chico has a little more than 100,000 people. Any parks larger than Bidwell are in larger cities. It has softball fields, a creek running through it and through the California State University, Chico. During the winter, on raining days, Bidwell creek is more like a raging river.
Much of the park is undeveloped so anyone who likes to hike will enjoy it immensely.
I don't know how to answer the questions below because I've lived within a mile of Bidwell Park for over 30 years when I moved to teach at the university. I play softball in the park all year round. So the answers below are not based on "visits."

Came here to get out and do some geocaching( gps "treasure hunting") also to get some exercise in. This place is amazing for walking running or cycling. It's a bit brutal in the summer months but still worth it if you don't mind the heat.
Review was written January 2017 just saw it was saved as a draft

Stopped in Chico on a Sunday Morning on a trip to Northern California. I was looking for a place to get a run in. Found this park on tripadvisor & decided to check it out. Turned out to be a great pick. It have plenty of good trails ands is a beautiful place. It also has nice bathroom facilities.

If some sleazy corporation owned this they would charge a large admission. Picture-book park with rolling lawns and heritage trees, and a mountain stream framed in like a swimming pool with ladders and life guards. The pool is flushed clean once a week. Come see what America looked like when people like the Bidwells were running the show. My, how have we changed to accept substandard millionaires and corrupt and ignorant politicians.

We were a little out of shape and looking for a long but relatively flat walk. It was a really nice trail alongside the stream/river. The water was clean and clear and further up the river you could swim. There was no trash on the trails and we met nice folks enjoying the walk.

I wish I had more time to walk around Bidwell Park. It was so scenic and the walking path was picturesque. Unfortunately, I was only able to do a short walk. Next visit I hope to take a longer walk.

This park was different from any other place I had seen. The huge natural pool was very interesting. There is a very nice trail you can walk along the water. Don’t go by yourself you my encounter homeless people on drugs in some areas.

Went on a day trip to this park. After reading the description of both Upper and Lower Bidwell, we decided on Upper Bidwell because me and wife are avid hikers and wanted to do something that would be challenging.
We went on the North Rim trail and hiked up... and up.. and more up! It's a fun trail, as there are hardly any switchbacks, so you just go up the mountain. It provides great view of the valley below and many opportunities to take pictures. After about 2 hours, we descended into the valley and that is when we turned back. We spent about 4 hours there.
Beautiful place. Lots of wildlife, interesting plants and not too crowded. I highly recommend it.

No matter if it's winter, summer, spring or fall, Bidwell Parks have something to offer for everyone. From hiking, bicycling, swimming, nature lovers, bird watchers, you can find something to see or do here. Upper Park, Salmon Hole, 1 mile to 5 mile parks. This park has a lot to offer.

A park within Chico and beyond. Upper Park, 5 Mile, and One Mile. All unique, all worth visiting. Some of the film Robin Hood with Errol Flynn, was filmed in areas of the park. The park is filled with hiking trails, bike paths, and horse trails as well. The park is well known for its Nature Center, which sponsors activities for children and families. Be sure to visit all the areas of Bidwell Park you won't be disappointed!

Beautiful Park anytime of the year. Easy walking paths, great place to take your dog for a walk, a dip in the creek or a picnic at many of the benches along the way.

River views, creek, a great variety of birds, extensive area to explore, rest rooms, open and wooded areas. Easy to get to.

We walked the dog in this lovely park. A river runs through it. We were lucky to see an otter hunting some very large fish, possibly salmon. Most impressive were the many huge oak trees and variety of plant life. There is so much beauty in this park that everyone can find something to enjoy. It is also very large with good hiking, bicycling and skateboard paths throughout.

I love Bidwell Park! The place is HUGE with a wide variety of terrain for different levels of fitness. I primarily go for the disc golf which is a killer course with spectacular views. The Park is also great for hiking and mountain biking.

Excellent for family picnics or gatherings....swimming , fishing , camping , barbeque ect.. If you into running , bicycling or walking trails , its the place of your dreams with it being America's 26th largest park..

There are three parts: Lower (tame, picnic tables, pavement, beautiful bicycling), Middle (mostly 5-Mile pool and Hooker Oak playing fields), and Upper (undomesticated creek canyon and volcanic strata. Legendary. Can't go wrong, but do pay attention to the warning signs in Upper Park.

A group of fraternity brothers and wives were in town for a special occasion and we enjoyed a great 2 hour hike in Upper Bidwell Park. Although Lower Bidwell is in the city of Chico, Upper Bidwell is outside the city area and you can enjoy hiking in the hills and by the river. Dogs are allowed to be off-leash in certain areas. It was good to go with a local a the signage, although adequate, might be confusing or inadequate for someone not familiar with the area. The trails (not the main road areas) tend to be rocky and uneven, so good shoes and a hiking staff are helpful.

Over the past few years a number of homeless encampments have developed in the more heavily wooded areas resulting in both safety and sanitation problems.

Beautiful! BUT CLOSED at the Gate due to summer long off and mostly on FIRE conditions. Red Flag Warnings. (Check out Butte Creek Canyon for dog friendly spots a plenty.)
BE CAREFUL AND AWARE of Upper Park rattlesnakes, ticks, poison oak and glass in the creek.
Rules of Bidwell Park include Dogs ALWAYS on leash south of Park Road (the creek side) and are not to be in swimming holes of Upper Park.
There are dog classes on Rattlesnake training provided from local organizations. People visit the ER and prompt care for rattlesnake bites, poison oak, ticks, glass cuts (you can't see the glass when it's in the water). There are bear and mountain lion sightings, check next door and the cameras at the Eco Reserve.
Rangers give tickets for alcohol, dogs off leash and glass.
Fox tails are invasive and abundant they are a plant that enters dogs' noses, they can't work themselves out, they travel and work themselves to the heart of the dog. It's sad, please be cautious and keep your fur babies close and on leash, make sure you know what they are sniffing it could likely be a rattle snake as well.
There are brook lampreys in the creek and leaches at certain times of the year, water snakes too, King Snakes are the black and White ones.
I forgot to even mention the POISON OAK, there are three types or variations, and its rampant. You don't have to touch it to get it either. Lower park has even more. Be careful out there.
CLOSED at the Gate due to summer long off and mostly on FIRE conditions. Red Flag Warnings.
Good spot for dogs- Dogs CAN be off leash along Butte Creek in Butte creek canyon. Follow 99 to skyway, at the light for honey run turn left toward Centerville, the creek and swimming holes and what used to be the covered bridge run along the road there.

Nice paved walking trails for miles. Pedestrians, runners, and bicyclists favor this beautiful park. Lots of trees and a creek with two bridges. Anyone can walk a few minutes to over an hour if desired. In Chico, we need all these trees due to hot summers. It also extends into the hills and lookout point called, "monkey face rocks." Sometimes deer shuffle through the park as well. Worth visiting.

We came up to check out Chico State and the surrounding area. What a beautiful Park for all ages! There were dogs and flowers everywhere!

What a lovely park, there is something for everyone. Good hiking or walking trails which are very scenic. People were riding bikes and skateboarding. Plenty of places for picnics, great man-made free swimming pool with life-guards, lots of swimming holes along the trails. There were many people walking dogs, children playing, nice family environment! We enjoyed the great flowers and the Cedar Grove. There appeared to be many playing fields for different sports. There was also a snack shack for water, drinks and other goodies. We were there for only a short visit, since the park is over a very large area we didn't see everything, but would definitely go back to explore.

This is the must do for any visitor to Chico. A peaceful place yet one of many activities. Walking or bike riding seem to be the primary pursuits. As time passes new discoveries emerge.

A really beautiful course with 1 quirky hole that tests patience more than skill. Having said that the course is well maintained with fair quality greens. Very friendly service at the pro shop. So so service in the restaurant/pub.
Good value and again worth the cost just for the natural scenery - creek, deer, geese, ...

I hadn’t been back to Bidwell Park in many years! It was lovely! We parked near the One Mile area and was able to do a five mile loop. Very shaded. Then we had a wonderful lunch at the Sierra Nevada Brewery. Had a wonderful time at both!

Bidwell Park is a must see while in Chico! As well as the Bidwell Mansion. The natural creek pool will wake you up for sure if you jump into it at 1 mile...but when was the last time you did that? It's huge and pretty! To walk around Bidwell Park, will bring you back to the forests of the origianl Robin Hood! Yes, that movie was shot there! Lovely areas to picnic...right on the creek! You can walk, and ride your bike...and if you have your fur baby with you, make sure you have your leash! Great place to just veg...and make sure you bring you camera! Photo op every turn...are you a birder? Bring your binos and be ready for a treat! Or tweet....Enjoy!

Bidwell park is a must stop something for everyone biking horseback riding swimming children's play area beautiful grounds

A spectacular park with lots of trails through the woods near the stream. Both paved trails and ones on dirt for runners. Upper park has hikes through varied terrain, with some very interesting places to visit along the stream toward the top.

Stay away from lower Bidwell unless you are down with laying in garbage, getting high and joint the merry band of transients who treat the area as a toilet.

This wonderful city park was actually used for a 1930's era Robin Hood movie; it is wooded like Nottingham Forest, or so one could be led to believe. It IS a beautiful park with a creek running from East to West creating the core of the park territory extending right into almost the central part of Chico's business district. Bidwell Mansion is an historic building for the area right on the West end just beyond the park territory proper. In the Spring there are running race events that use the park as their venue, which produces a shaded and wind protected running course. To the far East end of the park is one of the city's golf courses.

We always take time to relax in Bidwell Park when in Chico, it is so grounding. The original Errol Flynn Robin Hood was filmed in and around this park.
Very surprised by three river otters making their way up at 5 mile (as in I almost fell over as I jumped away). This is a big city park with fields, picnic grounds, walkways and swimming in a small town setting. The best place in Chico to relax and connect with nature.

Beautiful and nostalgic❣ The bike trail is awesome, the water hole still the same, the trees were in bloom, the creek was flowing...what a great place to ride and kick back and reminisce!!

Bidwell Park is spectacular! It is huge and so beautiful with diverse terrain. You will find
lush green lawns in lower park with a huge free natural swimming pool that is fresh water fed from Chico creek. This is every ones childhood dream pool, it is so cool. You can stroll, jog, roller blade, etc. along the creek and through the beautiful natural setting for miles. Upper Bidwell Park is more rugged with your choice of many trails to hike and a creek with lots of swimming holes to swim in; check out Bear Hole along the Ishi Trail. There is even a planetarium in the park!

The park go's from a flat oak trees with a creek flowing though the middle of a strip of heaven. The park fallows the Chico creek up into the hills of a canyon with beautiful rock formations, with a trail running alone the rim. The lower park one can drive a car, but the higher you go the road might be closed to auto. A bike is the way to go if you can, paved roads allow easy ride. Also provide are picnic spots along the drive or large spots like One Mile or Five Mile public swimming holes and picnic tables and base ball fields. Hooker Oak park has a play ground and base ball fields, something for any ages to find something to do that's fun. The movie Robin Hood was filmed in Hooker Oak park, so it really looks like a forest too. The park is over 25 miles long in size, not sure how wide. It's a state park now as the city couldn't afford to maintain it. If you like the out doors or to hike, play or swim Bidwell Park is the place to go.

Bidwell Park has something for everyone... a great swimming area, many miles of trails for walking or bicycling, and areas that can accommodate groups.

Bidwell Park is central to Chico culture. We came to Chico to visit family and utilized the park almost everyday. We biked lower Bidwell twice. The roads were so flat and wide and so enjoyable to ride on. We went to Bear Hole to dip into the creek. The water was refreshing and the terrain was more rugged than lower park. Definitely check out this park if you are in Chico. Explore all parts!

We had a visit to Bidwell Park since we were in Chico for the weekend. I was pleased with the park but wished that there had been better signage for the trails. We opted to walk the lower park but the trail had no signage as to crossovers and mileage. That said, I found the park to be very refreshing and relaxing. The path along the creek is perfect for escaping the hustle/bustle. The snack shack at the swimming hole is a great stop for an ice cream after a walk.

Beautiful park located right in the middle of the town. You'll be glad if you take the time to visit. All of the colors were changing for fall, and it was simply beautiful.

So many trails and areas of the park to explore.... It is a HUGE park that is well worth a visit! Take advantage of a nice day and get outside!

bidwell park is the largest city park in the state. you can go hiking or biking, swimming in the creek or in the pool. there is so much to do. great for family parties or just hanging out with friends.

All local growers and purveyors. Hand crafts as well. Very informative customer service. Local kids 4H projects on display.

Without the park, Chico would be a sleepy little college town. Lower park has a road going thru it that is open every day at 11. befoe 11, you can enjoy the road without traffic. there are also running trails. Then you should visit upper park with lots of trails and swimming holes.

The place doesnt look like much from the road, but, get inside, park and walk the 100 feet to the river on the far side. Beautiful foliage, water, PEACE and QUIET. You can easily spend the day thre. And the pool ? what...150 feet across and 1000 feet LONG ? and surrounded by the river ? heaven ! Then, drive the 7 minutes to the upper Bidwell for Horseshoe lake.

This was Sherwood Forest for the Errol Flynn movie version of Robin Hood. It is a beautiful oak setting, and it has a magical, old forest quality about it. Little Chico Creek runs through the park, and the oaks are old and majestic. The park is idyllic, perfect for running, a casual bike ride or running under the cool canopy of beautiful trees.
This is a regular haunt for locals, I have visited hundreds of times. Top marks!

Bidwell Park in Chico is one of the largest urban parks in the United States and directly links downtown Chico to the rugged countryside up the Big Chico Creek in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.
It consists of two very different parts which are connected together in one long, continuous stretch of parkland and open space.
Lower Bidwell Park starts as a narrow strip at the juncture of downtown and the university near Bidwell Mansion, gradually widening as it heads east towards the outskirts of town. It consists of the heavily wooded creek and riparian area, with gentle walking trails as well as swimming area and more.
As the park heads further east out of town, it becomes Upper Bidwell Park, which becomes ever wider and increasingly rugged, again focused on the wooded riparian area of the creek, but with a rugged, rocky gorge and rock outcroppings. It includes more swimming areas and numerous trails along the creek, on the top of the ridges and cliffs, and up to, and on top of, an outcropping of rock known as the Monkey Face because of its resemblance to a face of a monkey or ape. It offers a variety of natural areas and different types and levels of hiking and is one of the jewels of the region. Maps of the park are available in the park, online, and at hotels and other places in town.

As you amble slowly through Bidwell Park in Chico, California, either walking, running, bicycling or driving, the enormity of the Park in the middle of the City is mind- boggling. When I could, I used to run 5 miles daily in the Park, swim at 5 mile or the Upper Park, hike with my dog in the upper reaches of the Park, I could almost feel Errol Flynn swinging through the beautiful trees, many of which have now passed their prime. I am constantly reminded how much I love Chico and the vast history behind this historical landmark that is Bidwell Park, named for the founder of the City, General John Bidwell to whom we are indebted for granting this beautiful land to our City.

One of the reasons I love Chico is that you can never get lost. If you don't know where you are, drive eastward and you will eventually run into Bidwell Park. It is beautiful and well maintained and the residents are proud of it and it shows. While in Bidwell Park Find:
King Richards Return Marker. Hint: Look for the arrows.
at least 5 different Welcome to Bidwell Park Signs.
2 Old Women practicing Tai Chi (separate or together).
Recumbent Cyclist steering with feet, peddling with hands.
The Jackie Treehorn sketch. (Hint: watch The Big Lebowski)

There is everything in the world to do here. Hike, swim, playgrounds, disk golf, golf, baseball, softball, two natural swimming pools, the One Mike Adam and the Five Mile dam, and horseshoe lake for fishing. Great for kids. Lots of picnicking sites. Plus a creek that runs through the park. Robin Hood, the original film, was filmed here. The one with Earl Flinn. A natural wonder. A natural playground.

This park is unique providing fresh water swimming in natural year round creek pools flowing from the Sierra Foothills and springs. This Park also provides one a place for Solitude, Meditation, study, picnicking, Bike riding, walking-jogging, horseback riding, family lawn games, wild life viewing and much more. Some early motion pictures were filmed in this Park; one of the first was "Robin Hood" starring Earl Flynn.

Great place to hang out with the family and folks and to hike in...spring time rocks, with rolling river running thru it and a few places to dunk your selves in to the water

I had hoped the security issues would have improved since my last visit; sadly, this is not the case. Homeless camps along the creek and under the brush in the park have made this a dangerous place to visit, even during the day. Drugs are used openly, panhandling is aggressive, and many of the vagrants appear mentally ill. The park budget is too small to cover the massive amounts of trash deposited daily. Very little police presence and too few rangers to cover such a huge park.

Bidwell Park has an amazing swimming pool that is feed by the river. It has a cement bottom and is cleaned every Thursday. Lots of trails to run, bike and hike throughout the park.

This used to be the best place to go take a walk. To meander along the banks of the creek and look up at the beautiful trees. It was safe and clean, but no more. Chico's rampant homeless population has made this a dirty place. Trash heaps and abandoned tents. Creepy, filthy people staring at you from their camps. Makes you not want to walk alone. I wouldn't ever recommend bringing kids here to play. They've turned it into their personal dump and the city does next to nothing about it

If you want a nice place to walk, run, or bike, look no further. The paved or dirt path from lower to upper Bidwell allows for a wonderful 16 mile turn.
I had no idea that Chico had such a fine park and will return to use it for future training runs.

We took advantage of a bright , sunny day to get our horses out after a long and wildfire impacted winter.
Some of the trails were closed due to persistant muddy conditions, but we still had many miles of riding available.
We even stopped bt the municiple golf course club house for some refreshments, and were warmly welcomed with our horses. The manager said they were planning on installing some tie rails because they like to have equestrian visitors.

Beautiful Park, very clean, no transients, great tour of mansion! Shaded areas to sit, walk or play.

Everywhere we went in this park was pretty and we loved the swimming holes. Great place to bike ride.

Lots of grass, large trees, paths for bikes and peds, not crowded on the weekend. Clean. Very pleasant.

Amazing place, so much sweet single track! Djdjfbdnfnfndjdjdjdjdhdjdjdjdjdjwowowiehshdhfbddhdhdhrhdhdhdhe characters!

Bidwell Park is Chico's crown jewel. Walking trails, bike and jogging paths and acres of natural beauty with a beautiful creek running through it!

It’s just a beautiful place to be during the day. Head home once the sun goes down. Extra scenic points in the fall and spring.

We hiked the upper portion of the park starting from the five mile bridge. The creek was clear and beautiful. This is a great outdoor gem for Chico. We checked out the lower area by one mile pool. That stretch looked inviting, too.

I have been to Bidwell back in the late 1980's. There seemed to be a few new additions including a nature center focused on school aged kids. The walking/running, biking and horse trails are well maintained. It was a pleasure to ride bikes thru this well grown park on a very warm day. It is a must see if you visit Chico.

Beautiful park with swimming, fishing, hiking, group areas, and play equipment. A very large park that starts in downtown Chico and goes out into the country. There are also horse and mountain bike trails.

Not only is the park & its history spectacular but the history of the Bidwell's is also amazing! Just the thought of someone back in those days thinking of preserving this land for Bidwell Park. A MUST walk thru the park and hike in Upper Bidwell Park.

Miles of Park through the center of town with a creek, swimming holes, walking, hiking, running, biking, picnic areas, playgrounds, baseball field, fishing, amphitheater and more. "Shakespeare In The Park" each summer and a year round nature center. .This is a wonderful gift hat this university town has to offer.

Great for long walks, jogging, has many trails and a huge creek-fed swimming pool, or you cal also swimm in the creek.

Have had the opportunity when visiting Chico to hike Upper Bidwell a couple times. Typically go to the parking area near the Gun Club and Observatory, and then hike up Monkey Face and then back into the park to the west. Then nice to work your way down to the river and then follow that trail back to the parking area.
It's a tremendous park, huge in size, with lots of options for hiking, walking your dog(s), photography etc..... In the Upper Bidwell they have one side of the park for Offleash dogs and the other for on lead dog walking. Even when busy, the park is so large that I have found were still off by ourselves taking in the sites. This is a great park to explore.
Lower Bidwell also looks great for a nice walk, although I've not done that. We always drive up to Upper Bidwell and then go from there.
If your in the Chico area and enjoy hiking, don't miss this opportunity.
Enjoy

I am not into the outdoors but this park is tremendous and offers lots of activities for the local crowd.

Young families and grandparents playground. A place specifically mentioned that no adult could enter without being accompanied by an adult. It's fenced and play areas all over. Some for under 2 - 5 years of age and some for 5 - 12.

This is a huge park that gives a lot to Chico residents and visitors. There is a river fed swimming area that has a few life guards. It's natural water fed and there's no cost to the public. I don't think it is chlorinated either. The variety of trees are impressive as the original founder collected many species.

It's a great place for just walking in the park. Bring your Bikes with you Enjoy this beautiful Park. Wonderful place to take your Pet for a walk or run.

'Chico Bidwell Park' - a treasure in the town of Chico. This park is amazing. Originally adopted and cared for by Annie Bidwell, John Bidwell's wife. John Bidwell was a gold miner and a very well-known and influencial businessman in the Northern California area. He buildt Bidwell Mansion in Chico and his wife took on Bidwell Park and nursed and nurtured it until her death. The movie "Robin Hood", starring Errol Flynn with Olivia de Haveland was filmed here in this park.
With so many trees and shrubs it provides an oasis for any travellor coming to Chico - not to mention beautiful Chico Creek running through the park with lots of picknick and swimming opportunities. Stop and enjoy it - you will fall in love!!!

Running miles to the east of downtown, Bidwell, named for the founder of Chico, is an urban treasure. Don't miss a quiet walk among the trees.

My favorite memories from living in Chico are from the swimming holes in Upper Bidwell. I also loved to scan the hills for mountain lions , pick blackberries in both Upper and Lower, and stargaze at the observatory across from the golf course. Man, Bidwell is honestly one of my favorite places I've been to and you gotta visit it.

We spent an afternoon exploring the Yahi Trail, and realized that there is so much more to see here. We'd like to come back during cooler weather and try another part of the park.

What was mostly interesting was the list of animal and bird sightings. Two mountain lion ones listed within months of each other. Wouldn't have known.

Take a walk, swim at Sycamore Pool, cool off in the creek, watch your kids' imagination go wild at Caper Acres, catch a softball game or find a relaxing spot to sit in silence and reflect on all that is beautiful about this place.
Bidwell Park is a very special place to the locals. We love it here. Mainly because it offers so much to our community. We gather here for parties, festivals, races and meet-ups. We bike here; walk here; run here; and stroll here. We sit next to the creek and listen to the running water. We walk our dogs here and meet friends here. Bidwell Park really does offer so much.
Just visiting? Stop here. Get out of the car, stretch your legs and let the beauty wash over you.

This was recommended to us by the hotel staff so we took the kids on a stroll through only a small part. We went past this incredible creek fed pool. It must a joy to swim in there in summer. The playground was fun and the kids saw a squirrel. Plenty of people out and about using this park.

Bidwell park can be divided into two categories, upper and lower park. The canopy covered paths and trails of Lower park meander along Big Chico Creek and are utilized by runners, dog-walkers, bikers, families and commuters.
Upper park, my personal favorite is home to a multitude of dirt trails a favored by mountain bikers, trail runners and those on horses. It also provides easy access to many different swimming holes, easily accessible trails for the less adventurous and hours of entertainment. Upper park is divide into an off-leash side (north side of upper park road) and leashed side (south side of upper park road) for those of you with canine companions.
If you are planning to mountain bike in Bidwell park make sure to check online as the trails do close to bikes in wet and poor conditions.

I've gone to this park most of my life. Sadly the upper park road is closed to vehicles these days. If you can't hike there or ride a bike there you are out of luck for that part of the park. That leaves older folks and those with wheelchairs, etc. out of luck. Lower park is still available to all and a wonderful place for a picnic.

Whether you're a runner, a walker, or meditative, this is the perfect place for all. There a picnic tables stationed throughout the park . There is a sweet creek running right down the middle. It has paved road, dirt paths, and big beautiful trees.

This park has something for everyone. From Caper Acres for the little ones to B-Trail for the mountain bikers and hikers, this park holds many places to explore and get lost in nature. I've played in this park for more than 18 years and there are still new places to be found.

We had a beautiful stroll in Bidwell Park this week. A clean, fun place to check out and go for a swim at 1 mile.

Bidwell Park in Chico CA is the second largest municipal park in the US behind Central Park, and is also a California State Park which means it's protected and clean.
Bidwell Park is rich in history going back to the early 1900's. The park consist of lower Park which starts at what's called One mile in the downtown Chico area.
One mile includes a large cement pool for swimming which is drained and refilled with fresh water weekly. It also includes many recreational areas/spots including play areas for children, bbq pits, horse shoe pits, a baseball diamond, bike trails, hiking trails, picnic areas right on the creek (Big Chico Creek) and more.
You can walk, hike, bike or drive up to five mile which includes more picnic areas, swimming holes, fishing (barbless hooks only) golf, more baseball diamonds and the start of more great hiking.
Move beyond five mile and you now enter what's called Upper Park which is one of the best kept secrets in No. CA. Incredible mountain biking, hiking, swimming, walking, photography, canyons, springs, rock formations, cliff jumping and more. You can spend a day at either lower or upper park. I prefer Upper park as I like to hike along the creek and climb in elevation for incredible canyon views.
Bring water, snacks, a wind breaker, swim trunks and good hiking shoes. Keep an eye out and you may spot deer, black bears, coyotes, bob cat and an occasional Cougar so be mindful that you're in the wilderness.
Awesome place to explore.

Right in our own backyard, Chicoans are so very lucky to have Bidwell Park to enjoy.
If mindfulness is on your agenda, head to the park. If exercise is needed, get out and sweat.
So many trails, landmarks, seasonal changes to enjoy that you get a new sense of enjoyment each time.
Their is both upper and lower parks that allow so many options from picnicking, swimming, biking - family friendly and solo adventures - dog walks and par course - Bidwell Park really has it all.

Beautiful park within city limits. Natural stream which you can swim in. The park is full of native California plants with gorgeous oaks and pines. Great for a walk and picnicking, sports, etc. Like Sherwood Forest. I believe Errol Flynn's Robin Hood was filmed here.

Folks in Chico are lucky to have a place to take day hikes so close to the city. Not too difficult. Nice views. Beware of mountain bikers but they are considerate.

Spent the day at 5 mile floating and playing in the creek. It was so beautiful and relaxing. The park is incredible. 1 mile is my favorite but it was crowded so we headed up to 5 mile ❤️

The park was ok, I think the traffic noises in most of the park are too loud and it distracts from nature.
Also came across homeless people at the pool with their trash all around as well as homeless just finishing their baths and saw a few places where some homeless person decided to leave their garbage behind.
I want to see nature not garbage and homeless people. If this doesn't change I won't be bringing anyone to see this place again.

It's fall in Chico and Bidwell Park. It is beautiful. There are several places to stop and take a nice refreshing walk. You chose how long you like to walk and pick a place, One Mile, Five Mile or one of the numerous openings along the road next to the park. It is a place meant to be enjoyed.

Bidwell Park is a must visit for all in Chico. It is truly the tale of two parks or an extended park journey. Downtown is the classic Bidwell Park . . . The municipal park cutting through Chico and providing cooling relief for all in downtown Chico. The upper park takes you out of town in sorts and upstream to even cooler trails and cooler water features.
Bidwell (lower park) is great for the evenings / afternoons in Chico . . . Upper Park is a joy for a weekend day - picnics, hikes, soaks in the stream . . . It is all good . . . Life is good.

Beautiful outdoor area and is great for anything you may want to do. Games, walking biking, swimming, painting or just seating and just seating and enjoying the scenery.

I have during the past 30 years walked the six mile loop around this park at least 500 times. It is a pleasant, lovely experience.

Bidwell Park is huge. There is lower park which is more like a typical city park and then there is upper park which is totally wild. The only real draw back is the road to the end is closed now.

Really love this park in the early mornings.
Perfect to relax and play.
A lot of people socializing like walking their dogs, bike riding, walking through the trails, and doing picnics. Another one of my favorite things here is the shade from the trees and the beautiful birds singing.

Hiking/biking trails, swimming pools, picnic tables. A calm and cool respite from the hot summer days. Also golf course, horse shoe pits, exercise trail, tec.

This was a very unique hike to a swimming hole, although we stayed up high and enjoyed the scenery rather than swimming. We were the only ones visiting on a Friday around 3:00 pm. While hiking back, we passed two groups, each with dogs and 12 packs of beer (although postings in the parking lot state that alcohol is prohibited). When we arrived at the parking lot, we noted a park ranger and vehicle. The ranger was walking towards Bear Hole with a ticket book in hand. Warning to hikers: Keep your alcohol at home. You would not want to be impaired on this hike; there are broken parts of the walkway and overhangs requiring you to bend down to get to the other side. I saw an article from a local Chico paper written in June, 2015 stating a dog died from heat exhaustion and had to be carried out of the canyon, while another was impaired by the heat. Keep a clear head and enjoy the hike without your dog or alcohol. Stay safe and enjoy this unique hike.

This park is filled with beautiful trees. There is a nice long paved trail to take a nice walk, even a little river too!

Walking distance to downtown - great for bike riding, dog walking, hiking. Very unique - large, creek runs through it. The downer is that the highway also runs through it.

Bidwell Park is in the middle of Chico. So much to see and do. Donated to the city by Annie Bidwell, sife of founder John Bidwell.

Bidwell park is a jewel for Northern California. Swimming, hiking, photographing, picnicking, horse-back riding, and many other activities can be done the park.

This is the most incredible park I have ever been in. There is something for everyone whether you are a swimmer, walker, jogger, bike rider. There are stations along the trails to stop and do special exercises, hidden nooks to sit and read and contemplate life, it is being in the woods without having to leave town.

The park basically covers the watershed of Chico creek. The lower Bidwell park is a nice city park with beautiful trees, shady trails, bridges over the creek, easy walking - nice and peaceful. But if you drive a few miles East, it becomes a much bigger place with ragged trails going over volcanic rocks. While the trails a relatively short with moderate elevation, keep in mind that trails are really rough, so make sure you have good shoes (closed toes a must, sandals won't do it). The views are fantastic! And it's all free.

This is a great spot to sit and think. Lots of quiet nooks to sit in. In the Summer good place to swim and soak.

Bidwell Park has always been a beautiful place in Chico. The park is a big part of Chico life there is swimming, playgrounds, bike trails, horse trails, hiking, and beautiful views all around. Growing up the park is just a part of life in Chico and definitely worth seeing. Booker Oak park has great play areas for little ones. Cute little houses you go into, climb up and slide out of. Great little tunnels, etc.

We are in the park every day and have been for 15 years, minimum ally. Walking the dogs, walks with friends, special events, swimming when it is hot, sitting atop the lifeguard to read when it is cold

Every city would be blessed to have such an amazing gift! I only wish we could have gotten out & enjoyed it more, but it was raining during our stay in Chico. But we got to drive through many parts of the park, and do some short walks in between storms.

Bidwell Park and Upper Bidwell Park offer amazing walking, biking, swimming, and even horse backing trails. The views in upper park in the spring should never ever be passed up. Worth the drive if you're from out of town.

It's huge, natural and has something to offer for everyone who loves the outdoors, from swimming to biking to disc golf to caper acres for little kids. The trails are my favorite, along with the observatory, and Big Chico Creek has many swimming holes - for you and your dogs. Get outside!

Whether it's ONE MILE swimming, Five Mile rustic swimming, caper acres playground for kids (recently and on-going renovations) Bidwell Upper and Lower has it all!!
Bidwell is the heart of Chico

We have spent so much time in Bidwell Park over the last 11 years. There is so much to do here.
Swim in Sycamore pool, or go for a dip in one of the swimming holes in Upper Bidwell. Take the kids to Caper Acres. Rent the Campfire Ring for a drum circle. Play some sports at one of the many fields. Attend a music festival, fun run, fundraiser, movie night, BBQ, or festival. Bike, hike, walk, skate, or board the many trails in Lower or Upper park. Take your dog for a hike. Have a picnic. See the stars, in the observatory. Take your bow to the archery range. Go fishing in the pond.
There are too many things to list. Just get out there and enjoy this unique treasure!

Beautiful well paved bike lanes. Very little street traffic.
Several rest stops with picnic tables spread through the park

Bidwell park offers something for everyone. Accessible by car, with sweet spots for a picnic or dip in the creek. Upper park offers great mountain biking and hiking trails along with epic swimming holes. My buddy from Maine often can't believe it's not a national park!

People living in Chico are very luck to have this park, which stretches from near downtown way up Chico Creek. Our group of six explored the park early in the morning, going all the way up to Horseshoe Lake. We walked around the lake and did some birdwatching, then stopped at various places along the creek. What a great urban oasis.

I always love spending an afternoon strolling along the creek. It’s beautiful and the lack of hills makes it an easy trip for the entire family. Definitely worth checking out if you find yourself with a couple hours to kill while visiting Chico.

The park is divided in two sections, lower and upper Park. Enjoy a bike ride, run or walk in lower park within the city of Chico. Then find a picnic spot by the creek or enjoy a swim at one-mile. Upper park goes into the foothills along the same creek. Great nature walks are easy thanks to the well kept trails. Mountain biking is also available.

Bidwell Park is a world class beauty with its meandering creek, gorgeous flowers and trees whose leaves in the fall spread across the color spectrum. Wild-life such as deer, squirrels, birds of all types, raccoons, and feral cats abound.. One Mile from the Bidwell Mansion, home of the founder of Chico and donator of the park, is a cooling"swimming hole" named simply for its distance from the house. Upper park has even more pristine swimming areas. Colorful river rocks smoothed by the crystal clear streams line the bottom of the pools. Comfortable benches, plentiful bathroom facilities, bar-b-q spits, picnic tables and benches are throughout. Weddings, ball games, swimming, picnics and every sort of family event possible can be held without charge in Bidwell Park. It was donated by Annie Bidwell with the provision that no alcohol be allowed. So sad would she be if she saw the condition which has befallen this magnificent bequest to the folks in Chico! Children need to be chaperoned so they don't come upon sleeping "residents" who resent intrusion into their area, strew their garbage and unsavory paraphernalia or approached them for food, thus tremendously diminishing the availability of the park to families

What a fantastic park! It accommodates many different activities - biking, hiking, swimming, and playgrounds for children.

I spent an afternoon with my teen daughter and my dog, walking in the park. A very nice trail in the shade under the tree canopy. Plenty of places to sit down and have a picnic. If I lived in Chico, I would be a frequent visitor.

Love Bidwell Park! It has so many different areas to visit , upper and lower park! One mile is great, has sycamore to swim in, also 5 mile recreation area ! It also has swimming holes in upper park, bear hole, salmon hole! So beauitful in spring and fall with all the trees! A must visit if you come to chico!

Upper Bidwell Park has a vast amount of trails ranging from flat and east to moderately steep for true uphill hiking. Left of the main road dogs are allowed off leash making this a perfect place for my labradors and I to take weekly hikes up to Monkey Face Rock and around Horseshoe Lake. Further up the main road, you will find swimming holes, secluded fishing access, and shady spots for a lazy afternoon. If you happen to want some night adventures, the observatory just reopened after a massive remodel, however, the general park closes at sunset so time your visit accordingly.

Me and my roommate used to go biking at the lower Bidwell Park on Sunday afternoon during my exchange semester in Chico. We love the trees, river, and quiet atmosphere the place feels. There's also an outdoor swimming pool! What a good old time… I would love to visit again when I can. :)

This is a nice part of Chico history and a lovely area unless it is in the summer on a 95 degree plus day.

Worth a trip to Chico just to see the park. A monument to the generosity and great love of community shown by the Bidwells. Literally days and days of hiking possibilities. There is a small visitor center that, if open, will give a good introduction and orientation. Unfortunately there are too many careless and rude mountain bikers that are doing a lot of serious damage to some ofthe trails.

We had a drive up to a parking lot close to monkey face and took a short trail up to the monkey face. The trail was easy to do even though dressed in "office wear" and not prepared for a hike. It was a beautiful view from there, even though it was late and some moist and fog over Chico. Unfortunately we didn't see much more of Birdwell Park than the drive to the monkey face and the upper part of it. But totally worth a visit this way when having limited amount of time!

Bidwell Park is beautiful!!!! We visited Bidwell Park to take family pictures while visiting family who live in Chico. The pictures turned out beautiful and the time spent with family among the beauty was precious. Bidwell park has to be one of my most favorite parks of California. I am happy to have visited and hope to visit many more times!!!

Went for a 10 mile run in the morning and found the trails and paths to be very open and easy to follow. The scenery was gorgeous and it gets wilder the further you get from town.

Something for everyone here. Ballparks, golf, 500+Ft natural creek swimming pool. Horse, hiking, mountain bike trails. Picnic sites by the creek. Nature Center. Horseshoes. Caper Acres kids special play area. Shooting range. Observatory. This is one of the largest municipal parks in the U.S.

I enjoy coffee weekly for the free wifi, comfortable seating, and newly redesigned outdoor patio. I have not eaten here. The coffee is good, but rarely freshly brewed and bold coffee is usually very mild. However, it is an inviting, lively environment for casual meetings and reading.

Bidwellpark is a great place for family or friend gatherings. I'd say it's also a safe place because I often visit the park alone and feel fine doing so. I have mainly spent time in lower park and appreciate the grassy areas and paved pathways. There are also dirt trails for those who want a more natural setting. The trees are pretty and there are many different types of trees, as the area is known for its tree varieties.

Came here to get out and do some geocaching( gps "treasure hunting") also to get some exercise in. This place is amazing for walking running or cycling. It's a bit brutal in the summer months but still worth it if you don't mind the heat.

We spent sometime walking through Bidwell Park. Enjoyed the lush green trails. Lots of fun. A much do when visiting Chico

My back yard is the park love spending time there. Great place to take a walk have a picnic read a book take a nap

Whether you are wanting to enjoy a picnic, a refreshing swim, or hike the trails, Bidwell Park is a pleasant place to visit. Just sitting under the trees listening to the birds and watching the people is a very peaceful experience. A great place to have fun with the family.

One of the best parks around, love Bidwell, it’s so peaceful and unspoiled. If you get a chance check it out.

Walking or biking is a must here, if you visit Chico. This is a gorgeous park, Chico is lucky to have it. Great for walking dogs too.

What a great area to get away from school. Hang out with friends, school mates, and family. also a great area for pictures.

I loved this park. Bidwell is a beatiful place to be. I used to go to the one mile every year and swim all day long then lay in the grass. Everyone is always friendly there

This park has literally everything. High end, moderate difficulty hiking. Amazing geologic formations along the river. Beautiful scenery. And just when I thought it was over, I stumbled onto an enormous swimming pool made out of a flowing river. if you're in Chico visiting a university student, or if you just want a great short weekend getaway from the San Francisco Bay Area, I definitely recommend visiting Bidwell Park. If it's summer, bring your bathing suit. My short hike revealed a fantastic, highly swimmable River.

Huge, varied in terrain, vegetation, and activities, close in and far out (man), this is the number one attraction in Chico. Without Bidwell Park, Chico would still be nice but not outstanding. The park makes it outstanding. Great for families and people of all ages, the park is well used even in inclement weather. It's wonderful to have a place to escape to that's right in town. Multiple events are held here including running, softball, horseback riding, hiking, nature walks, golf, and the list goes on. If you're thinking of moving to Chico and enjoy being outdoors, look no further. If you're just visiting, it's not to be missed.

last week we there it's really good place for fun. my grandson was very happy. family happy. we stay holidayinn it's very near to hotel. that is the reason we love chico

We are blessed to have this amazing park here in Chico! We went for a walk last week and it was stunning with all the leaves down on ground the the water in One Mile pouring over the bridge. There are many trails and paths to walk on and there are always interesting people to watch too!
I did note that they have some new recycling bins and I would suggest doggie bags for all the people walking dogs here!

The creek through Bidwell Park has been dammed and lined to create a welcome and safe swimming spot in the hot Chico Summers. The park itself is well maintained, trails are wide and inviting and well used by university students and old citizens alike. Near town center it is a treasure.

This is a sprawling part that runs through the heart of Chico. Chico Creek runs through the middle, and provides two swimming area - the one mile dam and the five mile dam. The part is also a wonderful place to ride your bicycle. Only caution is the poison oak.

What a great legacy for the Bidwell Family to leave for all to enjoy! From all the wonderful vegetation to the awesome swimming pool in the dames up creek to the trout in the streams, it was great!

My teens loved the bike trails and the One Mile Pool. There are many picnic places which are private and some which are in the open, a great baseball diamond with benches and there are horseshoe stakes and pits, horse riding trails, babbling brooks, grassy meadows, concession stand and bathrooms. Your family could easily spend the entire day here and not be bored.

A beautiful park , great trails for walking or to jog on. There is a very nice play area for children.

Just love this place
Beautiful park
Great place for your family outing or to ride a bike thru park. Upper Park is great for swimming and hiking too

This is a great 3700 acre park that is both community inspired with the lower park with a pool, trails, and children's fantasy park as well as "wild" upper bidwell with flora and fauna, hills and creeks. Love all of this treasure.

Beautiful park with miles of walking and biking paths to cover. Beautiful mature trees, absolutely gorgeous in the spring and fall- but a wonderful place anytime of year. There is a great playground for the kids called Caper Acres near the large Sycamore Pool, where there are lots of picnic tables and grassy areas to relax and enjoy the day.

Chico is very fortunate to have Bidwell Park and nature right on its doorstep. Outdoors at its most beautful all year round! Come and enjoy this natural splendor when you visit Chico!

Gorgeous spacious park with a creek running through it. Part of the stream has been widened out to make a swimming pool. Lots of shade and paths to walk as well as playing fields.

I love this Park. There are always activities going on and beautiful things to see no matter what time of year. One Mile has a pool that was created from part of the river. Upper Park has a small pond where the wildlife likes to gather and great hiking trails. There is so much to discover in this park, you have to see it for yourself.

I have traveled all around the world but still think this is the best park anywhere. If you want to dream of Robin Hood with the forest this is the place to be. It is a great place for everyone. Place to swim, a place to walk or ride your bikes. Lots of tree covered lanes. Just perfect.

Bidwell Park has a great deal to offer. Paths are great for a bike ride, a walk or a run. Picnic tables follow the creek so if like privacy or if you want to get a crowd together the park has what you need. There is Lower Bidwell park (locals call 1 Mile) there is another section (Called 5 Mile) and then there is Upper Bidwell. The lower parks have swimming areas and the upper park is great for hikes, Mtn biking and horse back riding.
You need to bring your own horse.

We went to snap some photos on Christmas Day. It's a beautiful space with a lot of room to roam. There are some great spots for stunning photography and video. There are public restrooms (though not kept up too well).
If you're looking for a beautiful place to explore nature, then this is a stunning one.

Chico is one of the most beautiful towns to visit. The downtown area is quaint and homey. The one Mile Swimming area is unique in that they concreted a large section of the creek running through Chico, and made it like a swimming pool. However, the creek continues to run through the area Fall until Spring then they lift blockades to make it a regular swimming pool. It is surrounded by lawn and trees. The area right next to the creek is paved and looks just like a regular pool, but very large and wide. Sorry, I don't have a picture of it available right now. You can drive through this area in your car. It goes along the creek, but it is like driving through a far off forest. Upper Bidwell Park is a great place to walk your dog. You can either take the trail up the mountain, or along the dirt road to Bear Hole. There is, also, a trail that goes right along the creek. All this is in the middle of the town of Chico, but when your in the park you feel like your in the middle of the forest. If you like to, hike, walk or ride a bike this is definitely the place to see when your in the area.

I have been coming to this park since childhood. Hubby and I would bar-b-q here when we were first married 45 years ago. After setting up our RV we drove through Bidwell Park to cool down from the 100 plus temps. Now that we are retired, we still enjoy walking through the park or driving around the park each time we visit the area. It's cooler down by the river and so relaxing under the giant trees. A perfect place for a picnic, walking the dog, biking or just driving slowly through enjoying the park.

Absolutely fabulous!
Bidwell Park, the “Jewel of Chico,” is by far the greatest legacy Chico founders General John and Annie Bidwell left to the community. It was John Bidwell’s wish that Annie would give this land to the City of Chico for public use. She did so by deeding 1,900 acres in 1905 and another 301 acres in 1911. This parkland stretched from Upper Park in the east to Children’s Playground in the west. Over the years, additions to the park were purchased by the City of Chico bringing the total acreage of the park to almost 2,300 acres by 1935. At that time, Bidwell Park was the fourth-largest municipal park in the country. In 1995, the City of Chico acquired 1417 acres on south side of Big Chico Creek bringing the total park land to its current 3,670 acres. Bidwell Park stretches nearly eleven miles, straddling Big Chico Creek from the Bidwell Mansion in downtown Chico up into the foothills of Upper Park.

So beautiful! A must see. Hiking and swimming. Old and unique.lovely views in Upper Park. PeAceful with the river running through it.

We strolled around lower Bidwell Park for about 30 minutes. There is a very interesting swimming pool there, fed by the river. I've never seen anything like it. We also drove over to upper Bidwell to take in the views and snap some photos.

Fourth largest public park in the United States. Amazing philanthopic gesture from a true pioneer family to a wild and wonderful community. You would have to see it to understand. Swimming holes in a public space, hiking, biking, ...amazing!

I was born in Chico and have spent countless hours in Bidwell Park…and I never get tired of it. The 'One Mile' or Sycamore pool is probably the first thing many new visitors will see. It is surrounded by a huge park setting, with a paved bike/walking path that leads to a children's park called Caper Acres. I took my kids there from ages 2-8. The creek winds through town with the park on both sides. We call this Lower Park. It ends at 'Five Mile' where there is another pool. Upper Park goes for literally miles and miles of hiking and biking trails. There are natural pools in upper park; Bear Hole, Salmon Hole and more. They are not easy to get to, but on a hot summer day it can be rewarding. Bidwell Park also has a golf course in Upper Park and a new disc course also.
If you only have an hour…park your car at the One Mile and walk the loop that takes you to Cedar Grove. Cross the bridge and head back. It's lovely.

This is a great park for anyone! Lower park at One Mile has a great swimming hole where locals cool off in the summer. There are life guards there which makes it a great place to take kids. There are also picnic areas as well as playgrounds here. If you have kids don't miss Caper Acres! Many trails wind through this park with the lower section being flat and an easy stroll. There is a paved road that is great for roller skating or bike riding. Upper Park is for those who are looking for a more intense hike. Check out the trail up Monkey Face. The view at the top is beautiful.

You can drive along to find your picnic spot. On this road are joggers, walkers and moms pushing a stroller.

Bidwell Park is the 3rd largest city park in the country - it's huge and has something for everyone; kids' playground, swimming holes, mountain biking, golf course, hiking, fabulous vistas and a swimming pool. It's close to Chico State and within walking distance to downtown Chico (if you're in good shape)! Also free parking in several different lots and free entrance.

If you're looking for a great place to get a morning run in and you're in on business, this is the place to go. Convenient, easy to navigate and plenty of people around to feel safe.

I don't know if we went into an alternate entrance, but it wasn't nearly as large as I anticipated. A very pretty park with great natural beauty. There were separate children's play areas with castles, forts, etc. There were senior softball parks and a river. I thought we were going to be able to drive around the whole park to get a feel for the different areas, but the road was blocked and emptied us back into the (beautiful) neighborhood.

The walking/running/biking path is paved all the way through lower park making a great 6 mile loop that has two bridges along the way to shorten the loop at any point. Dogs love to romp in the creek and the wildlife viewing in the early morning is extensive.

Now that the homeless are cleared out, it is a descent place to go. No longer dangerous. You can walk on paved paths or dirt trails near the stream.

My girlfriend and I hiked Upper and Lower Bidwell on separate days. Both of which included great hikes and wildlife. We saw a ton of woodpeckers, a couple fish, and squirrels. There seemed to be more homeless people in lower Bidwell than the Upper. However, both were great and we enjoyed the trees, rivers, and peaceful atmosphere.

It was a beautiful day and was alot fun to step in the water and explore the little fish and plants in there.

Great location for a leisure walk in the lower park near downtown or a more intense hike in the upper park.

My dog and i enjoyed walking the easy trail alongside the creek. Early in the morning (at first light) is the best time in the summer when it gets H O T!!!!

I have taken my children there several times and we have all enjoyed the experience. I plan on taking my grandkids as well.

Beautiful park. One mile to 5 mile park all great. Walk or bike. Then upper park amazing for hilinf, swimming, mountain biking.

Everyone who knows Chico raves about this park, & it's true -- including a walled in very large swimming area fed by Chico Creek, called One Mile.

There aren't many places you can go in the summer for free to cool off. Bidwell Park has a nice semi-built in pool; Sycamore Pool more commonly called 'One Mile.' It is fed from natural creek water and has fish in it. When there is money in the budget, Chico Area Recreation District staffs it with life-guards. This past year wasn't so lucky. Overall the park could use some updating and general maintenance. There are many overgrown trees and weeds along the creek banks and the paved hiking trail. The grass is pretty slim so bring a blanket or beach towel to sit upon. There are many tables and benches, some barbecue facilities, horse shoe pits, small children's park; Caper Acres which was recently updated. Many wonderful events happen at this park throughout Spring and Summertime. They host a full day of events for July 4th in honor of Independence Day. You can drive your car through the park and find small secluded places to picnic. No overnight stays allowed. The park closes at dusk.

Bidwell Park is an under-developed (not a bad thing necessarily) city park perfect for semi-spontaneopus outings, especially with kids. The museum/nature center is quaintly primitive and allows visitors a closeup (but safe and appropriate) look at its wildlife.

Bidwell Park is an amazing place to visit. Lower park offers a great place to run, bike or simply relax. Sycamore pool is one of a kind and offers a respite from the scorching summer heat. Upper park is a great place to exercise as well and is also good for wildlife exploration. It's beautiful all year round but is particularly stunning in the fall when the leaves are changing colors.

It has a wonderful spiritual, peaceful feel about it, it is so big and offers majastic oaks and other trees.....a wonderfulplace to take your family for a picnic, a bike ride on one of the many trails, and it has a wonderful place to go swimming for the whole family, this belonged to the Bidwell family.

We came here from Reno and it was absolutely gorgeous. You could hike for miles on different trails, swim in little water holes, rock climb, fish, etc. We ended up walking around for more than 3 hours and swimming surrounded by dragonflies. Since then, we have gone one more time and are planning to go again this month.

This amazing park manages to preserve a sylvan stream and century old oak trees right in the midle of a busy college town. Several swimming holes, miles of trails, much of it paved, some of it very wild. Best kids area I've ever seen. Something for everyone. And very well used on a sunny weekend morning.

Love the nature. Great for family picnic and visiting. Great for photo shoots and breezy during fall season. You will see some wild animal there and that's what great about it. Love the water flowing they river and rocks.

The trail system at upper Bidwell park is not well marked. We are from out of town so it was a little harder to navigate. We ended up doing a rim hike and really enjoyed it. It was super hot outside so we went early in the am. There were lots of people there and dogs everywhere. We left around 9:30 am and found a swimming hole to cool off in. It was so nice. The whole park is a gem!

very calming and beautiful area. be watchful of dog poop though! great for walking and helpful in relieving stress. the historical aspects are interesting as well.

Bidwell Park ranges from a natural creek area in the upper Bidwell section, with rock climbing and swimming holes, through a mid-area, with trails and sandy shallow wading areas near private picnic spots, to lower Bidwell, with open picnic areas and the Sycamore Pool. The Petersen Memorial Parkway is a beautiful tree-lined drive through the park.

Not only kids climbers, picnic areas and swimming holes, but lovely walking paths. The grandkids loved throw twigs into the creek to see them float away OR rocks, to see who could make the biggest splash! Lovely afternoon spent here for zero dollars!

Bidwell Park is a very nice area that gives a calming effect. It is great for families as well as anyone who loves nature. Walking among the birds and small animals in their natural habitat is fun as well.

Hard to imagine Chico without Bidwell Park. Walking, running, biking, swimming, or just sitting enjoying the peace and beauty it is the soul of the city. From children's playgrounds to remote swimming holes in upper park it is the spirit of Chico. Once the location of Sherwood Forrest for the filming of the Errol Flynn 'Robin Hood' movie, it is what you imagine Sherwood Forest to be.

The largest municipal park in the country, Bidwell Park in Chico, California has something for everyone. Caper Acres offers a world of up-to-date play equipment for younger children. Playing fields of all sorts accommodate organized leagues and pick-up games. Barbeque grills and picnic tables alongside the creek create ideal locations for families or friends to enjoy nature and each other while paths and trails are great for hiking and some roads are closed to vehicles to encourage bike and board riders. Golf and disc golf, a shooting range, and a planetarium widen the variety of available activities. And that's all just in the city portions of the park.
Upper park features wild areas with black basalt swimming holes and trails for mountain biking or hiking. With the addition in recent years of even wilder areas, the park extends well into the Sierra Nevada foothills, wild enough to house mountain lions, bears, and eagles.
If you're in northern California, try to spend some time in Bidwell Park. You too can enjoy this gem.

Beautiful park with a lot going on, we were fortunate to have some sunshine while walking around. This would be a great park to take pictures in, there are many great picture backgrounds. We probably saw 15 dogs while there, plenty of benches and places to picnic or sit for awhile.

Beautiful park!! Huge trees. Lots of people there - many children and families. I remember there were walking trails throughout the park. There were great playgrounds for all ages there.

Chico has one of the largest, most diverse city parks. It meanders from Downtown Chico all the way up into the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas. Grassy parks, walking trails, hiking trails, bike trails, One Mile with it's stretch of creek turned into a pool, picnic tables, BBQ's, ancient Valley Oaks, children's playgrounds, baseball field, wild hiking trails, creeks to play and refresh in. There are numerous swimming holes in a gorgeous rough rocky canyon, golfing, horseback riding, Observatory. A real gem in Chico

As one of the three or four largest municipal parks in the country, Bidwell Park's lower and upper areas are both the lungs for and the rural release valve for lots of the city's residents. If you are in town for meetings or a concert or just dropping the kids off at college, give yourself an hour or two to take in a lower park hike along the creek under the valley oaks; or a more expansive and lung-massaging outing along the rims in the upper park. Mostly this park is jogger, hiker, biker, picnicker turf. But its outfitted to welcome horseback riders, skaters, golfers, shooters, star-gazers, swimmers, frisbee and horseshoe throwers, and even the car-bound among us. With numerous eating and snacking options near 1 mile and 5 mile, you are never far from a latte or a burrito. While you won't encounter crowds most times, its best to be cautious after dusk and before dawn for skunks and the occasional vagrant. But all in all this is a gem of a place to spend time, especially with friends. Four recommended activities: 1) the 11-mile north rim hike including the old Yahi trail; 2) a swim/dip in Salmon Hole in Upper Park; 3) the Thanksgiving morning Run for Food to raise money for chico shelters; and 4) a 6.5 mile bike loop in lower park. The park encourages you to invent your own activities as well.

This is an amazing place to visit. I have seen another swimming hole quite like this its beautiful loved seeing the whole community enjoying this place. So pack your swimsuit and maybe your bike as this is free and there are plenty of bike routes. I loved and so will you.

all kinds of places along the creek for swimming we also take our dog for walks there beautiful trees giant oaks over 80 ft. tall at one mile there is a nice pool area bathroom and changing area swings picnic tables with bbq nearby. they also have free movie night once a month family friendly. there is also a baseball field with a small children play ground also. I have never had any problems with people there. there is so many different groups of trees its fun to explore all the trails. my favorite thing is to go swimming with family and friends.

Love this pool built in the middle of the creek! Lots of nice trees for sitting in the shade. Concessions available. Some people don't like the "slime" on the bottom, but it's part of the natural environment. I love that lifeguards are generally provided and there is no entrance fee! Goes from a shallow end to a deep end, but still no diving.

Bidwell park defines Chico. It represents everything that's wonderful about this town. Stunning scenery that varies from woods, to creeks to wide open vistas of the mountains in the distance. Lower Bidwell includes biking/hiking trails, picnic areas along the creek and the area known as One Mile which includes a fantastic swimming area in the summer months. Upper Bidwell is more wild with great mountain biking opportunities and rugged hiking trails that wind back into the canyon. Nestled between upper and lower park is 5 Mile, where my kids love to swim in the creek and catch pollywogs. It's the perfect outdoor adventure close to home!

5 mile is the big, wide open part of Bidwell park great for exploring, hiking, swimming, mountain biking and whatever other activities strike your fancy for the great outdoors

Grab a friend, a book, a bike, a dog, your running shoes, a bathing suit, a cooler full of cold beer, a yoga mat, or just your thoughts. One of the most beautiful places to get lost in, relax, or be active. Something for everyone. Everytime of the year is gorgeous in it's own way in this park.

Bidwell park is land set aside by John Bidwell for the public to enjoy. There is a lower portion inside the city of Chico and an upper portion outside of the city. These 2 parcels of land have very different personalities.
In Lower Bidwell within the city, the park touches campus. It is tree and plant filled with a stream and an ampitheater. The Bidwell Mansion is also on this property. Sadly, there are now a number of homeless people living on this land.
Upper Bidwell is outside of the city of Chico and has more of an upper desert feel. There are less trees, more hills and awesome hiking paths. Car access is rough in places.
Choose the personality of Bidwell Park you'd like to visit or try both!

This is an extraordinary municipal park. The Lower Park is close to downtown, a beautiful and tranquil place to walk, cycle, jog or take a swim in the large natural pool. Lots of trails and picnic areas alongside the centerpiece of the park — the gurgling creek that runs its length. My wife and I took a 3 mile walk around only a portion of the park; the next morning I took a peaceful run. What a great asset to the city and fabulous refuge for families, The Upper Park is a bit further away and great for longer hikes either along or above the creek one the canyon rims. It is a popular spot for creekside picnics. The park was a highlight of our visit to Chico.

Check out this park at anytime of the year and you will be amazed by its beauty! lower park is located near town and is easy to access for the entire family. Upper park to the East of town offer's a little more challenge for cycling enthusiasts and hikers

This is the greatest park. Walking trails. Tennis. Horseshoes. The real treat is the large swimming stream. Free. Excellent to enjoy time in the park in the water plus sitting on the grass enjoying outdoor time. A true treasure. Bravo Chico to maintain something like this for all to enjoy. Take your chairs, good book, snacks, floats and make a day of it.

Always an Epic visit for hiking, views and photo opportunities.
You can hike the valley floor or the upper rims.

Pretty quiet friendly people. Easy to find bring a box lunch sit by the creek...My dog on leash had lots to rediscover...

This is a very easy and peaceful place to ride a bike. It does get a bit crowded on weekends but not outrageously. People are polite. If you go mid week I am sure you can have the place almost to yourself.

I’ve been here twice, both times have been Thanksgiving weekend. Weather was perfect, fall foliage colors, and amazing scenery along the river.
First day we started at Horseshoe Lake and hiked to Bear Hole and Salmon Hole. Round trip was about 6.5 miles. The black volcanic rock makes this place one of a kind. The kids loved climbing on the rocks. Our 4.5 year old walked about 5 miles. The flatness made it easy and the scenery distracted him.
Salmon Hole was a lot harder to find. You have to scale down rocks, and it isn’t marked by any signs or cairns. Both places would be fun to swim at in the summer time. 4.5 year old was able to climb down with some help.
The last day we rented bikes and biked from the bottom of Lower Bidwell Park all the way up to Horseshoe Lake. The park had plenty of both paved and unpaved roads. It was mostly flat which makes it perfect for kids.
There are bathrooms and porta-potties throughout. Loved this park and hope to visit again!

Good trails for walking, riding horses walking dogs, etc. I liked the bridge over the creek.
We saw people jogging, watching wildlife, going to the golf course, and having picnics.

This park has just about something for everyone. The more tamed west end begins in the Chico city area. There is summer swimming (a pool created by using the crystal clear waters of Chico creek. Picnic areas, summer movies, and an area for plays (theatrical type). There are softball diamonds in several different locations. There is a very cool children's playground (Caper acres). There are miles of trails for horse back riding (and stables near by). The upper park area has a golf course, an observatory, fishing lake, and then you begin the really neat part of the park. There are miles of hiking, running, biking, horseback riding, trails that follow the wilder eastern part of the park, (upper park). The park also includes a disk golf course. Wow I could go on and on. Fly fishing is possible if you get permission in advance, some very lightly fished creek that is in the foothills. You get the idea. Parts are mowed and neatly kept, and parts are wild. Summer can be warm and dry in the upper park area, with the possibility of rattlesnakes, and poison oak. The more heavily visited areas (picnic, play grounds, ball fields etc are snake free. In reality this is a year round area to visit.

16 miles of city park and then more was added on. I believe this is the 3rd largest city park in the nation. Lots of swimming, hiking, frisbee golfing, and even a beautiful golf course in the middle section. Donated by the founders of Chico, this park must remain undeveloped in the upper half. Just not glass, please....

This is actually a series of parks. I run/walk there several times a week year round. It never ceases to amaze me with it's ever changing beauty. Something for everyone here.

Chico is truly blessed to have a huge municipal park. The westerly end is developed for public use with softball fields, playgrounds and a natural creek swimming pool. Head east to Upper Park and you can hike, fish, swim for hours and not see another person. Plus there is an excellent golf course at the entrance to Upper Park (Bidwell Park Golf Course).

If you have the time, I recommend a walk through Bidwell Park. 3,000 acres of trees, creek, paths, etc.

One of the nicest parks I have ever been to.
Great relaxing place fantastic for family gatherings .
It's Wow

Way back in time, I used to live across the street from this park. I remember walking, biking, swimming, going to Caper Acres, watching a baseball game, etc. I have been back numerous times since we moved away, including 2 weeks ago. Went up to the golf course and hiking trails past 5-mile dam this time. Having traveled to many other cities across the country, I easily can say that this is a gem, one that is easily accessible for people of all ages to enjoy. And unlike my visits to Central Park in NYC, I feel safe here. Wish I still lived in Chico so I could enjoy it more often.

Always a nice retreat from a busy day or a quiet pause before that busy day starts. Great place to meet a friend.

Beautiful park with plenty of trails for walking, running, and biking. Found bathrooms at the beginning of Cedar Grove trail area.

We moved to Chico in 2002. Not a week goes by that we do not use the park for recreation. Oftentimes we are there daily. In the hot summer, Bidwell Park provides shade throughout the day for walking, running, and biking. Many picnics are had here daily. The Sycamore Pool at One Mile provides swimming, while anywhere along the creek in Lower or Upper Park provides wading and splashing coolness. In colder weather, Bidwell Park is still full of people exercising and visiting. In any weather, minus the super wet/very muddy times, Upper Park is perfect for hiking, mountain biking, horse back riding, and dog walking. It truly is a gem in Chico.

Beautiful park, takes more than a day to explore all the hiking trails, lots of very interesting history surrounding this park and the town of chico & paradise

Bidwell Park has something for everyone. Lower Park, easily accessible from downtown Chico, is shady and flat, and you can walk, jog or bike a pleasant loop from One Mile to Five Mile on a paved road, some of which is closed to traffic. You are seldom out of sight of the creek, and there are many places with benches or picnic tables and creek access. Couples, families and singles all enjoy this stretch. There are also a number of handicapped-accessible picnic areas, many of which can be accessed on the stretch that is open to vehicles.
Upper Park is wilder and more exposed, with more dirt/rocky trails, suitable for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking. Plenty to do and explore in this area, and if you are up for a challenging hike or technical mountain bike ride, this is the place. The North Rim, South Rim and Guardian trails stand out, but there are many, many more. Great views of the park and river canyon, with lots to explore, including some old Indian caves, and in the spring, outstanding wildflower displays. Dogs are allowed off leash on the north side of Upper Park, so it's also a terrific place to let your pooch burn off some energy, though be aware of wildlife and snakes.
Down closer to the creek in Upper Park, you can follow the Yahi trail, which starts a short ways after the road turns to gravel above the golf course. This trail is shady and gently rolling, leading you from one sweet swimming hole after another.
It would be easy to spend months exploring this park and never run out of new things to discover. Birds and wildlife abound in both parts of the park, and you are likely to spot deer on the golf course any time of day. People fish in the creek and in Horseshoe lake, and there is a good chance of seeing basking turtles, egrets and wild turkeys near the creek and lake as well. I could go on, but this is overlong already. You'll like it, just go.

Bidwell Park is one of the largest municipal parks in the country, running from downtown Chico to the Sierra foothills. It is a wonderful place for walking, running, biking, hiking, swimming, picnicing, or quietly meditating. The park is beautiful no matter what the season.
Chico Creek meanders through the lower portion of the park. At Sycamore (One Mile) the creek is dammed up, creating a wonderful area for swimming.
While Chico, California, offers many great restaurants and activities, in my estimation, Bidwell Park is it’s very best asset.

Bidwell Park is a must see for visitors & locals! It's a city treasure! Beauty, history and who doesn't like magnificent trees and a bubbling stream!

The park is amazing you must to 1 mile pool in the summer enter the park at tē east end of Vallombrosa ave drive down the creek stop at any f the picnic tables take a dip in the creek must have BBQ'S surrounded by tree's take the family for sure

This tranquil park rivals the best green spaces in the nation. This is the ideal place to spend some time in Chico, especially when the weather is nice. There are two distinct sections, Upper and Lower. I only had time to explore the lower section, but is was beautiful.
Peterson Memorial Drive runs for about two miles right through the center of Lower Bidwell Park, and that drive is a fantastic one to make. Every visitor to Chico should at least drive through the park, but hopefully allow enough time to get out and explore it too! For the most part, the park seems wild and rustic, a true gem of natural beauty. There are miles of hiking and biking trails, and the Chico Creek flows through as well, creating a quaint swimming pool at the eastern end of the park.
Overall: Be sure to stop by if you're in town. This is one of America's best urban green spaces.

Springtime in Chico is magical. Taking a stroll up the North Rim Trail in Upper Bidwell Park is a true connection with nature at its most beautiful and a chance to meet fellow nature lovers in the community. Go back regularly or at least several times during the pleasant spring. Waves of wildflowers come and go as the season progresses. First the early Chocolate Fritillary around early February (on the slope by the police shooting range), then the Star Lily and Shooting Star in the meadows, followed by profusion of Yellow Carpet, Tidy Tips, Valley Goldfields, Johnny Tuck, Birdseye Gilia and so much more princes and princesses of nature that warrant our stooping down in humbleness and admire their intricate structures and unsurpassed beauty. Sit down a while and hear the shrill calls of the Meadow Lark, the laughing sounds of Acorn Woodpeckers, and admire the grace of Turkey Vultures riding the updraft.
A few cautionary notes:
1. Beware of Poison Oak with its characteristic shiny three leaf clusters. Google it. Some people get severe contact dermatitis with first contact. Most people gradually become sensitized and suffer rashes with repeated contact. Beware of even the naked fuzzy twigs before the leaves emerge in spring.
2. Beware of Rattle Snakes when the weather turns warmer. Look before you step.
3. Beware of car break ins. Keep things out of sight. A bag of dirty gym clothes can cause you a broken window.
Just be aware.
Bidwell Park is a community treasure. Come and experience the many hiking trails and swimming holes. Your muses will be happy.

Bidwell Park is said to be one of the largest city parks in the country. It consists of lower park that meanders through town with picnic areas, large swimming pools and softball diamonds, and upper park that features water falls, secluded swimming holes, golf and miles of hiking trails. A friend of mine shared a picture of himself on Facebook of him sitting amongst lupin bloom, admitting that he had not visited the park in years. We encourage locals and visitors to take advantage of this gem as often as possible!

I was amazed that this urban park even exists. It is a bequest, a legacy from Mr. Bidwell's widow, Annie Bidwell. It is both beautiful and large, with golf course and shooting range. There's even a kiddie park for the little ones. There is an equestrian arena, a nature center, a native plants garden. There is a Spring run Chinook salmon spawn. One of only two Northern California creeks where this still happens. Large, safe and well maintained. See it. It's a jewel!

Lower park is nice and shady for summer walks, walking the dog, or just a leisurely stroll. Upper park offers lots of interesting trails, north rim and south rim. Great place to watch the seasons change. Hiking upper park in the summer is best for early morning, before the heat starts to bake. Autumn and winter offers more flexible times for upper park climbs. The Yahi trail is good in summer, as it is fairly shaded, and doesn't require a lot of exertion, and it is close to the creek for much-needed dips in the water.

What a beautiful tree-filled park in Chico, CA where it can easily get 100 F. You can swim in the river (they have a blocked off pool area), run on great trails, bring the kids to play areas, bike, and walk. A must visit while in/near Chico State!

Gorgeous natural park with lots of features. Kids play ground, bike paths galore, lawns to lounge on, and the clear Sycamore pool to swim in during the summer.

Rent a bike, ride and feel youself relax in this beautiful diverse park.
Great chuldrens park, bike/walking trail follows the river. Take the time to enjoy this treasure.

Our park is one of the most beautiful you will ever see. It is great for hiking, walking, swimming or biking.

An overall outstanding park for anyone. Lots of paved paths, dirt trails, restrooms, picnic benches. I ride my bike through both upper and lower Bidwell Park 2-3 times per week.

Bidwell park is a wonderful place to see i never seen a park that pig before but i enjoy it in any seson excapt summer because it gets hot you can enjoy the view of the landscape its juat amazing. You can also go to five miles it is in bidwell park and their you can see the river and rid your bike and barbecue. You can also enjoy hiking in upper bidwell park. The only problem i faced their is that dogs are allowed to be without a leash and my kids are scared of them.

Made a quick visit to Upper Bidwell when visiting our college student here. It's a very nice facility, with clean bathrooms, good roads in and out, and plenty of parking at several locations within the park. Lots of hiking trails with a variety of difficulty levels. Really nice place to step away from the bustle of the college town and take a breath.

Plenty of space, they keep the area clean.
Parking good amount of trash containers.
Didn't see many doggy DoDo bags pole's

Park is always excellent. A nice place to bring family and pets. They are renovating children's play area. I have been going for years.

The park is amazing, it start in the middle of Chico with playgrounds, the creek and many wonders, then meanders up in to upper park where you can take dogs off leash, go for a big hike and find intense swimming holes.

Beautiful spot with lots of good walking areas. Great nature center. The whole area is great for photographing.

This is a well kept park great for families and couples. Swimming, laying around, biking, walking and jogging/physical exercise.

Bidwell Park is divided in two. Lower Park has a swimming pool and many barbecue spots alongside Bidwell Creeek for individuals, couples and families. Driving your car is limited. You can ride a bike or walk the whole paved trail. Lower Park is also wheelchair accessible. Not so Upper Park which is much wilder. The road is not paved once you pass the golf course. Still there is a baseball field on the lower part of Upper Park and a planetarium. Once you pass the golf course and planetarium, traffic slows because of potholes and gravel roads. Up here there are trails to Indian caves. There is also the ridge trail that ascends to a butte. There are also favorite swimming holes, notably Bear Hole. Be very careful when swimming here, especially if the water in the creek is high. Large boulders can trap swimmers. Still, it's a beautiful place to visit whether Lower or Upper Bidwell Park.

Trees, trees, trees. Water, water, water. Lovely place to swim or walk. Make sure you visit upper and lower Bidwell Park.

The vegetation was really dry, but it was a nice walk through the trail. A lot of dogs during the weekend. Get there early!

This park offers everything from a large family to a solo athlete. Even when the weather is gloomy you will find folks walking on the vast amount of trails here.

This park was in the original Robin Hood movie! Miles of trails and roads lead through this gorgeous, dense park that follows the creek though the One Mile Swimming Hole and the Five Mile swimming Hole. Great for bike riding. A must if you are in Chico. We lived here for 20 years, my husband for 34 years and spent our summers throughout Bidwell Park. At the north end of the park are several swimming holes called the Bear Hole and the Salmon Hole, but you need to hike a bit to get there.

We wished we had had more time to explore this huge expanse of public space. Besides walking trails, there is access to horse trails, a golf course, a fishing pond, creek, swimming and probably more.

Wonderful walking in a huge natural area. Closer into town (Chico) is more cultivated, but still feels like the great outdoors. Farther away (the park is at least ten miles long) it's more open with rocky canyon walls and a beautiful rugged creek and several perfect swimming holes.

Bidwell Park was the site where the mivie Robin Hood was filmed back in the 1930's. Hooker Oak is now gone, a freeway disects part of the park but One Mile provides a favorite place for the kids to swim. The park's many paths provide biking a running opportunities. A beloved part of the Chico experience, Bidwell Park comes highly recommended!

Wow couldn't be a nicer place🤗Lots of trails following the river. Beautiful rock canyon on sides.. nice swimming holes. A good dirt road to bike ride on.

Bidwell park is beautiful, especially in the spring and summer! There are paths for hiking, walking and running, swimming holes, picnic spots, areas for barbecuing, playgrounds and more.

Nice and well maintained trails in the heart of the city. If you are traveling with dogs and need a place to stretch their legs it is dog friendly (assuming their are leash laws though. I always leave mine on a leash)

We have grand kids and a daughter who live in Chico and we always visit this park for our morning power walks. There's lots of ball fields, a municipal pool fed from the river, playgrounds for the children, picnic areas and lots of open shaded space to relax. Highly recommended.

One of the largest municipal parks in the US, Bidwell Park is a lush forest with Chico Creek running in the center of the park. Many folks flock to the park to run, bike, walk, swim and just escape from life's pressures. The wildlife and wide variety of trees and plants make "Sherwood Forest" a pleasant place to while away time and unwind. The movie "Robin Hood" with Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland was filmed here in Bidwell Park. Lower park consists of the most frequented p[ark with "1 mile" and "5 mile" pools where keeping cool and having fun is a joy during hot summer days. Upper park stretches for miles up the canyon with hiking and mountain bike trials which take you far from the city. Many pools abound where people go to have more private swimming and nature experiences at places such as "Bear hole."
There is also an 18 hole golf course at the entrance to Upper Park - Bidwell Golf course which many golfers (myself included) have spent many an hour in further enjoyment of this park graciously donated by Annie Bidwell one of the town's founders and philanthropist. There is something for everyone at the park. My family visits the park weekly and some weeks daily. Come one, Come all!!

Spent half a day here while our grandson was attending orientation at Chico State. There is a great cement pond on one side and on the other there is a beautiful playground area for the younger kids. It is a beautiful place, to walk, run or cycle too.

There are several major swimming holes here" alligator hole, bear hole, salmon hole, and endless places in between. The river is beautiful and flowing better this year than it has in a while! You can see plenty of fish swimming around your feet, and you can scramble around boulders while exploring. Great place to hang woth friends, bring family, and just have an intimate nature day. My girls and I come here every year.

This park is great! My husband's family is from the Chico area and we make it a point to visit the park every visit. Lower Bidwell is great for younger kids and all ages. Upper Bidwell is difficult terrain for kids, but fun for teens.

Hiking in lower or upper Bidwell is fun with some great views along the river. Easy trails, well laid out.

This is the favorite place to Walk, Stroll, Run, and enjoy the beautiful nature. ,Some of the huge trees are very huge and old. It is cool and comfortable when it is hot in the rest of town. It has a very interesting history, having been given to the community by tha Bidwell family to enjoy. Mrs. Bidwell ruled there can be no smoking while in the park. I have had numerous picnics, where small spaces BBQ 's and tables and benches are provided, along the bubbling creek. One can ride their bikes or horse. Just the place to admire and unwind from our busy and sometime very busy life.

The Bidwell family left Chico a fantastic natural heritage that remains the heart and soul of the city. The lower park has a nice play area for children and a throw-back area where the river has been walled in to create a funky natural swimming "pool". It's a spectacular site for nature walks and to see the leaves changing colors in the fall.

We lived in Chico for a few years and this park was the hardest thing to leave. So beautiful! When we lived here we would take the kids swimming and every weekend ride our bikes all through the park. Having no bikes we walked the park for hours. The park is the 4th largest in the Country. If you have a pet you can take them to upper park where Horseshoe Lake is and just left them run. When in Chico don't miss going to Bidwell Park.

Come visit our local park and find yourself enveloped by majestic trees in a real life Sherwood Forest. Bidwell Park was once used as the set for the 1930's Robin Hood Movie. Lower park is great for a walk or picnic, upper park is great for hiking and swimming and for taking your dogs. This park is amazing, you won't regret visiting!

Bidwell park is great, but there were a lot of issues when I lived there through 2013-2015. The park is HUGE and absolutely beautiful. However, one mile near vallombrosa and the large swimming hole is full of homeless people and college kids. This area of the park is usually full of trash on the ground, and it seemed like every month a new violent crime had happened in the park. Upper bidwell park or lower park on the other side of the creek are much safer, less crowded, and generally cleaner. You meet a lot of nice locals on the paths and trails, and you can really see all the beauty chico has to offer.

This is another place i have been going to since before I became a teenager. Used to go to 5 mile when they had it damned up. Great place for everyone. Nice place to swim, ride bikes, skateboard , picnics, birthday parties . All around beautiful park. If you like the fall the trees are really pretty. All around great place.

Bidwell park is a great place to go for an outing
there is a creek and we also went to uppe rbidwell
you are surrounded by trees and nature

My brother took me here. It is so amazing. You feel like you have stepped into the Enchanted Forest. There is room for an outdoor Frisbee game or a quiet picnic. There is a man-made swimming hole. My brother said that this was the filming location, for the movie "The Adventures Of Robin Hood" with Errol Flynn. I can see why they chose this location.

We went to bear hole, a swimming hole in upper bidwell. there were two areas that you couldf cliff jump with about a 15ft clearance. Very cold water but feels good when its 90 degrees outside. Good family location, easy to get to, picnic perfect

Bidwell Park is one of the greatest urban parks in America. It's also one of the largest, ranking somewhere in the top ten in terms of acreage. The Lower Park is in the city of Chico, and starts just on the edge of downtown. Walk along Big Chico Creek and enjoy all the trees (many planted by John Bidwell). Great for walking, running, and biking. Dogs must be on leash. Cars allowed in some but not all areas. There are numerous picnic tables and BBQ grills. On a hot summer day, everyone enjoys a dip in the creek or you can swim in Sycamore Pool, a freshwater swimming pool with lifeguards in summer.
Upper Park is more rugged and much larger, extending several miles into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. There are numerous hiking trails, shared by runners and mountain bikers. Hikes vary from easy (Yahi trail) to moderate (North Rim or Middle Trails). Dogs can be off-leash. There is also a road that is partially & occasionally open to vehicles, but it is rocky & rugged. Many favorite swimming holes along the creek.
This park is the "jewel of Chico" and not to be missed by visitors. Enjoy!

The Bidwell Park is beautiful and I believe one of the top (size) urban parks in the country. It starts in the center of town and ends in the foothills. A gift from Annie Bidwell that keeps on giving. The original Robin Hood was filled here due to the beauty and magical quality I am sure. Weather you are walking your dog, getting in your daily run or horseback riding, you are sure to enjoy the beauty of our park.

The park is huge and a local attraction. We ran in the annual Almond Bowl Run and it was a very nice place to run. I would go back

It is large with an upper and lower sections of the park. It has everything from hiking, mountain biking, swimming holes, mile swimming close to downtown, parks, walking trails, playgrounds, picnic areas. It's awesome!

A place will give you the opportunity to reconsider the value of nature, went there with my family and two children's.

Fun place to relax with your spouse, watch a ball game. A lot of trees and a stream to cool off. You can always find someone who's walking their dog and everyone remembers the animals name. The park personal does a fantastic job keeping the grounds clean.

For walking, hiking, or biking, this is the best place in Chico. Bidwell Park is one of the largest city parks in the nation. Pretty impressive for such a small town. We can thank Annie Bidwell for that. And if you would like more info about the Bidwell's , I recommend going to Bidwell Mansion on the Esplanade.

Visiting my brother and his wife in Chico, we decided to have a little picnic in the park.
I love Chico because of all its trees and alamedas, especially Esplanade (IMHO: not the correct name for this lovely tree-shaded boulevard). We only visited 1 mile, up to Sycamore Pool, which was like something out of a dream--a huge, non-chlorinated swimming pool enjoyed by multitudes of kids and families and with two lifeguards on duty. We had enjoyed a picnic earlier at one of the many lovely sites alongside Big Chico Creek. My only complaint is that the water in the creek was too warm. I dearly would like to return and enjoy the rest of the park, which is the 24th largest municipal park in the U.S.

Lots of people out for a walk on a sunny afternoon. Paved paths for wheel chair access. No distance markers however-watch your watch.
Bidwell Park is the 3rd largest Municipal park in California
3600 acres of land 2500 acres in lower park and 1100 in upper park. This park is awesome in the winter and cool in the summer with the creek running through it
