This was a really nice beach. Though the parking lot was full, the beach itself did not seem busy. Soft sand and snorkeling was great.

Beautiful beach.Yes. However it was a very hot beach when we went. Flp flops WILL NOT help you if you want to walk around in the sand. The water was beautiful but the waves were high. So we just walked from one side to the other. Walked with our feet in the water in the really shallow part of the beach as it had strong tides that of course got us wet. Decided to walk on the sand on our way to the car .Very bad idea as the sand was super hot even with the flops on! With that being said it was well worth the effort to find this gem of a place.

Big Beach is a beautiful beach. It's really huge with picture perfect sand and crashing waves. There were a lot of people, but the beach is big enough to absorb them. It was very hot when we visited though and there was little in the way of shade or provided facilities so you need to be reasonably well prepared if you plan to spend time there. For us it was just about seeing the place and scrambling over the rocks to the similarly picturesque, though nudist-frequented, Little Beach.
Definitely worth a trip if you're on that side of the island.

We love the view from Big Beach. Soft sand, blue water, islands in the distance. I could sit at this beach all day soaking up the sun and relaxing!
The waves at Big Beach can be quite dangerous due to the shore break and current. Therefore, I do not recommend this beach if inexperienced ocean swimmers or children would like to swim in the waves.
This beach has lifeguards. There are no plumbed washroom facilities but they do have porta-potties.
Will return to this beach some day!!

One of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. Uncrowded and so much sand. No buildings in the way, just nature. Lifeguards on duty during the day, I watched one rescue a young woman who was trapped in a rip current close to shore. Excellent work!
Not for little kids to play in the water due to rough shore break. Perfect for older kids and adults.

Big Beach at Makena State Park is gorgeous. We go there on every trip to Maui. The water is very dangerous since the waves break at the shore and the guards do not want you in the water. Numerous people have to be rescued each day. However, it is so pretty that we like to visit the beach for a long walk and relaxing.

If you're looking to lay out and stare at mesmerizing jewel-toned waters, only wanting to get about your calf and down wet, not wanting to struggle to find parking, and enjoy the natural secluded beach look over the condo filled look, set your GPS to Makena State Park and go.
If you want to ignore the "Dangerous Shorebreak" signs because you see other people frolicking easily and then get knocked upside down by a wave just to be repeatedly pushed back and forth on the sand like a kid's forgotten boogie board, then go in waist deep and stare too long at the scuba diver who resembles a shark instead of watching the waves. I'm not brave enough to venture far enough out after the waves break (because again, I'm always thinking about sharks), so this isn't a good beach for sissies. It is, however, a gorgeous beach to sunbathe at and stare at the waters. Don't bother bringing a book because you'll only stare at the water.
And yes, it's a very big beach.

Loved big beach. Brought body boards. Surf available.
Watch little kids closely, saw a few get pummeled in the waves.
Great mix of local and tourists. Must see on a Maui visit.
Aloha.

This is a favorite beach for locals and visitors. It is located at the south west end of Maui close to Makena Resort. Not a lot of parking but if you are willing to walk a minute or two, parking is no issue.
This is a big beach with nice fine sands but the waves usually very strong. Many locals come here to body surf. It is a good place to learn body surfing. No place to change or clean up. I did not see any washroom facilities. Not suitable for families with small children.

Great beach! Public parking and a lifeguard and bathrooms nearby! This beach was amazing. We enjoyed the waves (they were smaller) and the beach offered plenty of room to spread out! The sand is just amazing and there were no rocks in the water! The waves can be nasty, but our trip was perfect! My favorite beach on that side of the island!

A bit away from the resorts and harder to reach, so quieter. Superb, soft sand; crystal clear water and fairly gentle surf equals a fantastic beach for swimming and snorkelling. Small car parks but plenty of space along the road to park.

This is a gorgeous beach. However the water had quite an undertow and big waves. It's not for swimming. But it was beautiful

We enjoyed our time at Big Beach and never even got in the water! (so unlike us) There was volleyball going on, sand walls to play on, people playing music, dogs playing frisbee, and skim boarders to watch all day!

Big beach is a long white sand beach without any hotels or houses along its length. Very picturesque. If you are looking for somewhere laid back and tranquil, this is your beach.

Beautiful soft sand beach, very clear and turtles swim right by the shore. Awesome views! You need to get there early for parking. Great beach for the kids, thereās a lifeguard on duty.

We crossed this beach to go to little beach. Very wide and amazing sand, with trees that would provide morning shade. Unfortunately we leave today or I would go back.

This is indeed a big beach, it seems to go on forever. Safe area to swim and shallow but the tide can pick up the further out you go. Free parking and temporary / portable toilets on site. In December the weather wasnāt the best but on a clear evening this is a good spot to watch a sunset.

I just shattered my leg in the waves at this beach. Do not swim. My whole trip was the hospital and Iāll need multiple surgeries to fix my leg.

This is one beautiful (and big) beach. There are two parking lots that now charge $11, but there are a few short trails to the beach at the southern end where you can park for free along the road. The water is clear. It often has some of the largest surf in South Maui and is popular with boogie boarders. It is a nice beach to walk but the sand is not as hard-packed in places as some other beaches, so it could be more tiresome for some. A short climb over the bluff to the north leads to Little Beach, popular with nude bathers. Little Beach is sometimes closed due to excessive partying. On Big Beach, there is plenty of shade at the south end. This beach is worth a visit if your only interest is just to see it.

Beautiful soft sand and gorgeous water. The waves get strong in the afternoon. Not a crowded beach . There are lifeguards there.

Nice stretch of white sand and beautiful blue waves! Go early as the parking lot fills fast and I've never been when clouds don't come overhead to block the sun. There's a taco truck in the parking lot, porta potties and a lifeguard. If you're up for a hike, Little Beach is a short but strenuous hike over the hill!

the beach was clean, big and some crazy waves. the waves were 10-15 feet that day. We still went out in the water and had fun but be careful, it could seriously hurt you. Down the beach there were tons of surfers. I would come back here every day. PS- we went on a Sunday and little beach was directly next to big beach, do your own research on little beach on sunday!!!!

Great beach. Really popular but really big so I've never seen it too crowded. A little far away from the shops and hoThe coolest parts to me are on the two ends. The waves can get big and slam you into the sand so be careful:)9

This was one of our last beach visits while in Maui. This beach was gorgeous as you walk a short path through a forest to get to the beach. Great for photos, but even at 8am the waves and under tow were too strong for me and young kids.

I shattered my leg here three months ago and had three surgeries to repair it. I am a local resident who knew the beach and am STILL in a wheelchair. I knew the beach was dangerous and thought I was smart enough to avoid injury. It just happens so fast. Go swimming somewhere else.

Makena beach / Big beach is a bit of a drive and then a bit a walk but maybe one of the prettiest beaches in Maui. Yeah it has big surf and undertow but the sand is amazing. As long as you are not being stupid you should stay out of trouble. Bring some extra bottles of water to clean the sand off.

This beach is off of Wailea so it is pretty convenient if you are near the area. We drove there a few times from Lahaina and it was a long drive but worth it.
Parking is annoying - there are two parking lots, one on either end of the beach almost. They were very often full and then you have to just keep driving back and forth hoping someone will leave. You cannot really park on the mountain road leading to the beach because it is one lane either way so you would end up blocking the road.
Once you are actually on the beach though, it's really lovely. A long wide stretch that was never crowded the times we were there. Pretty clean and there were portapotties on either end that you pass to and from the parking lots. A bit of a hike if you are laying on the beach right in the middle though.
One thing I will point out is the waves were noticeably stronger there than on the west side of the island where we spent most of our time. Not tall waves or anything suitable for surfing. But just stronger in comparison as in I was knocked over several times at Big Beach by the waves compared to zero elsewhere.

I got there 7 am , had the whole beach to myself for an hour . The water is crystal clear and the sand soft and warm. Absolutely beautiful

Hard to believe only 11 people have rated this beautiful beach. Beach is large, lots of space and shady areas.
Jawz Food Truck sits between the parking lot and the start of path to beach. Porta potties available and were clean the day we visited.
Life guards are diligent about making numerous announcements about the dangers of the shore breaks, they are wicked. I am a strong and good swimmer and would not recommend swimming at this beach.
Pack lunch and enjoy the view and the sound of the crashing waves.

Didn't go swimming due to high surf ('if in doubt, don't go out!') but loved the view from hiking up the cinder cone.

We've been coming to Maui for years and this is one of our top beaches by far. Stunning beach about mile and a half long. Be careful of the waves, they're stronger than they appear. Try the far end of the beach as well.

Our party of 11 visited this beach last week. It is beautiful! Not too difficult to find. BUT, don't plan on swimming for fun here. The lifeguard even came on the PA system and said, "Big Beach is NOT for swimming!" I was the only one in our party who successfully navigated the waves and break to get past it without getting tossed, either going out or coming back. It is NOT for the faint of heart. In our defense, the lifeguard didn't say it wasn't for swimming until AFTER most of us got tossed around. He even called out one couple who ignored the warning and then turned their back to the waves to try and not get crushed. Yeah, that doesn't work...
Nice to see, but probably far out of the way of most people, and it's a long way to drive to find out you can't really swim there.

big beautiful beach with lots of room for everyone. Fine sand and nice waves to play in. Great beach with lots of great sand. Good snorkeling along the right side lava rock.

On a recent trip to Maui, our family wanted to go swimming in the ocean and had heard that Big Beach was a great place to do that. So we went there, and it was beautiful, but the waves were very powerful and tossed some of our family members around as if they were rag dolls. Also, the three females in our family who went swimming there said it took them three days to wash all of the sand out of their hair from swimming there. My adult daughter said her neck was twisted by a wave. Later we heard that some people have been killed there by the waves. So, beware! Also, there is no place there to shower or change, so unless you bring something with you to wash the sand off your feet, you will be tracking sand into your vehicle.

Big beach is just that, Big! Beautiful sand, life gaurds, restroom facilities and a food truck in the parking lot and out on the highway as you come in. Big Beach BBQ is on the highway about 1/4 mile before you get to the beach entrance. Tyhe parking is ample but it fills up fast especially on the weekend. The surf here can be treacherous, it's nice to watch but be Carefull if you go in, rip tides. There is some shade back against the trees. When we are in Maui we always go here for at least one day during our trip.

What a wonderful white sand beach, you can stay there the entire day looking at the green water, bring your towel and umbrella it gets really hot. bring your own food or snacks or walk to the parking lot and eat delicious fish tacos for about $7 for 2 small tacos per person. Great beach!

We went there when the waves were really high due to a tropical storm about 500 miles off shore, and it was really a spectacular show. The beach is big, the waves are big, and they peak and crash big.
This is a great place to check out and view some super wave action, then head a short way up the coast to a safer beach for a swim. You really need to be a strong swimmer and experienced with the waves and surf break to play in the water here.

A beautiful place to relax and watch the surfers and paddleboarders!
The local kids have this game where they run with a boogie board and slide down the wet dune and slide into the water just when another wave rolls in. It was great fun watching them.
If you continue walking south past Big Beach, you'll come to a hidden gem; Wedding beach. It's small and beautiful, so much so that many people come here to get wedding photos taken.
And sunsets are breathtaking here. You can see Molokini, Kaho'olawe and Lanai on a clear day!
Do yourself a favor, go there on your next trip! But get there early or you may find parking to be fairly limited.

As the name implies, the beach is a big one with a wide stretch of beautiful sand. It is not too crowded, it has lifeguards and food trucks in the car park. You should also know that the currents are quite strong, the waves are quite big and it gets deep quite fast. There are also some trees where you can sit in the shades and on one side of the beach you can climb on top of a small cliff which separates Big Beach from Little Beach (a nude beach).

The beach is beautiful, the water is perfect but the waves are no joke. This isnāt water you are going to sit and float in. Heed the warning signs that are posted all over. Keep Small children close. My 16 year old son and nephew did great in the water. After talking to one of the lifeguards he filled me in on some of the injuries that have happened there. Some earlier in the week, broken arms, dislocated shoulders and broken necks. Which is the other name the beach is known by. If you respect the ocean and listen to the lifeguards you will have an amazing time. Just be smart.

This beach has crystal clear water, excellent snorkeling, an amazing view and waves big enough to boogie board or surf depending on the swells. There are lifeguards here, but no bathrooms. (port-a potties). There is often a food truck during the lunch hour as well.

Great large beach, was not super crowded had life guard stations.
Access to little beach with a hill climb. Only port-a-potties.
**FOOD TRUCKS two were right there "JAWS" great food need to try it.

Big beach, entrance sign Makena State park, 2nd entrance (not to be confused with the first entrance to little beach, clothing optional), is appropriately named for its size at well over half a mile long. It's stunning clear blue water and soft powder like sand will delight any visitor to this beach. It never feels crowded due to its size and there is plenty of parking. There is a public bathroom but it's a Johnny on the spot. On the down side, no foot wash, but we all make due āŗ. You can climb the black Mountain and hike. It's also an access to little beach, but I would not recommend going barefeet as I've seen some undertake. Think black rock, hot sun!! Just sayin'. Be cautious in the water here. It is beautiful but can be dangerous getting in and out. Stay safe and enjoy.

Big Beach was beautiful, they have a lifeguard which is nice. Not crowded and a taco truck stops by so you can grab some food during the day. Across the rocks is a path to little beach, a lot of the surfers were on that beach, which was nice since no surfers were on big beach. Little beach is also clothing optional, so just in case you dont want tan lines :) Both beaches were stunning and relaxing.

Beautiful beach with great sand - even has a Life Guard station. When we were there the waves were pretty big with tremendous backwash - so had to be careful. Also worth noting that Little Beach - just a bit to the north over the hill - was clothing optional.

Me and my 2 kids drove from Lahaina to Big Beach. Left at 9AM and arrived a little after 10AM. We took the 2nd entrance and the parking lot was about about 2/3 full. First impression is that its a huge beach. But whats great about it, is it doesn't feel very crowded at all unlike the smaller beaches around Maui. Waves here can definitely get a little rough. The closer you are to Little beach (north/west) the smaller the waves. You can also see Molikini from the beach which was cool. We will be back again.

I was quite disappointed. This beach is super crowded and not even that beautiful.
Yes, it is a big beach but you won“t find a remote place and it“s simply a common yellow beach. Not very special and not like the beaches I expected to see on Maui.

We enjoyed our visits to Big Beach even though it always seemed to be cloudy there... The waves are big but fun to play in! It's nice and big so you don't need to worry about being close to others when you're laying in the sand.

we used the third entrance and were able to have a spot in the shade. even if the parking looks packed at all three entrances still tons of room here so no worries. great sand and great waves.

I fell in love with Big Beach. The sand is soft, golden and clean. The sunset views are wonderful. There are decent waves but they break right on shore, called "shore-break" as the lifeguard explained to us. Be weary they will tip you over and roll you around right on the shoreline and fill your suit with sand! It can be quite comical, just not so much if you are a little one. Worth spending a day, or two on this beach, truly stunning!
Of note, you have to walk about 10 minutes from the parking lot, but it offers food trucks!

When we got there 4-5pm the beach wasn't crowded. the sand was a super almost gold color. great place to sit a read a book, we even saw a few whiles breaching out in the distance.

This was our second trip to Big Beach in the past 5 years. It is still our favorite beach in Maui.
We were lucky enough to catch the sunset on this beach and took a bunch of photos that turned out amazing. You can also see Molokini in the distance.
The beach was not that busy when we visited but that could have been because the time of the day (sunset). We will be back.

Great beach! Frequented by locals. be sure not to leave valuables in your vehicle if staying for the day. Enjoy.

This is a huge beach with lifeguards. The lifeguards are there for a reason. The waves look deceiving in a manner that they crash hard on the shore. I lost my glasses and hurt my back here from trying to surf it. While searching for my glasses (the water is crystal clean and easily swimmable 15 feet out) I found someone else's just laying there between coral 10 feet down. The current could easily take you though. I had to actually help a girl out to get out of the water. Remember to leave in a diagonal she said. I also saw a man with a baby in the crashing waves and he lost his grip for a few seconds. Nothing happened but the guards were warning that this is not a children beach or for weak swimmers!

Tonnes of parking spaces, an easy walk to the shore, and you face the wide open wonderful fierce Big Beach. I've read this described as waves big enough to knock tourists over, and I have to say that on a windy day, if you are not a confident swimmer in open water or waves, do be careful. We saw many people who looked unsure being violently dumped - luckily there is a lifeguard station but use some judgement. Even if you don't go in the water, you can people watch, picnic and admire the scenery. Plus its not far from there to La Perouse (separate review) so bundle it up and make a day of it. (From memory there were portaloos at the beach carpark too so another plus).

Truly called Big Beach for a reason! I've never seen such an expansive, beautiful, clean beach. The cliffs right behind you are amazing too. Water was blue and the waves were huge when we went. Hopefully I'll be back soon!

This is Very nice public beach. They do have lifeguards. Beach was not too crowded. Pack light though- packing in cooler, chairs, umbrella is a bit tough.

Big Beach is in Makena State Park on the south side of the island. There are two entrances and the first seemed to get very busy (expect when raining). The second entrance was practically empty when we went. Granted, we were there in October, when the crowds are smaller anyway.
The beach is gorgeous, stretching for what seems like forever. It's also has depth to it, so there is lots of room to stake out a place in the sand to hang out. The shore breaks here are very strong and can be dangerous. There are tons of signs posted speaking to this, but you only need to watch for a few minutes to see the power of the waves. There are life guards present, but you still need to be careful.

Visitors be advised! I'm a new maui resident, proficient swimmer, and lover of the beaches here. On 7/6/15 I was tossed by a wave on Big Beach and shattered both of my legs. Upon arrival to the ER, the doctor mentioned I was the "lucky one" as he had 3 spinal cord injuries prior to me.
To the Maui Memorial Hospital staff, Big Beach is known as "spinal cord" beach. The force of the waves that crash so close to the shore results in daily injury and sometimes death, as a vacationer and mother of two broke her neck and died a few short months ago i was told. It is a beautiful beach and "maui revealed" book calls it a real gem. If you go to BIG Beach experience the beauty, but there are so many other safer beaches to swim in. I have a long road to recovery after 12 hours of surgery but if I can prevent another person from being injured that is the purpose of my post. I love maui and all the beauty there is. DO NOT SWIM AT BIG BEACH!!

Not for snorkelling it's a surf beach, huge rolling waves, did not even swim,
May change but life guards are on duty three towers.
Watched some very skilled bodyboarders, huge waves the day we were there
King tides.

If you like to get naked, go here, go right (to the end), climb over and you're at Little Beach. Good vibe, not weird like many nude beaches.
If you snag the front end of your rental car on a root and need someone to pop it back on for you. Well, I can't really tell you who will fix it, because their not supposed to work on rental cars. I'd look for an auto body shop specializing in "Collision" and I'd look in Lahaina.

This was a beautiful beach with silky sand and some trees for shade cover. It is at the Makena State Park, which is free. There are lifeguards and porta potties available. We found the perfect spot under an old tree where the water would rush almost to our feet on occasion. The waves would vary about 20 feet where we were sitting. The current is quite strong and was beautiful to watch. We saw boogie boards but I wouldn't recommend swimming here. We walked the beach, watched the ocean, read, buried the kids in the sand and stood in the waves. Definitely watch the little ones. Just north of this beach, over a rocky pass, is a clothing optional beach. I think they call it Little Beach. There was a gal that wandered her way over to our parking lot topless and my adult daughter saw her. I don't know how often that happens but staying on the south end of the beach might avoid that. It really is a beautiful, picturesque beach!

Stunning Beach and true to it's name it is big with lots of space so it doesn't feel crowded. The water was too choppy for us to swim here though.

This a large famous beach with a tide that breaks right at the beach. If you take the kids make sure you help them out in the water. Otherwise, hang on the beach, get some sun, play games and have a great time. Not a whole lot to see for snorkelers.

So, in most of the books I read, the have other places with snorkeling reefs to view. I went today to Big Beach, and the snorkeling was amazing! When you get to Macena State Park (at the bottom of the South Shore), turn into the free parking lot at the sign. Walk 500 feet at the end of the parking lot and you are right there! The best snorkeling was on the north side (or to the right when you are on the beach). The shore is very sandy and shallow when you enter, but just a little ways out, the bottom drops far (40-50 feet!). At the bottom are rock formations that houses hundreds of fishes! It's like being in a giant aquarium. The depth of the water might scare new comers, but the sea turtles, parrot fish, and others are worth it! Enjoy!

Beach is huge, sand is great. Pack a couple beach chairs, an umbrella, and a cooler. Try to get there before 10AM or you'll be parking a ways back.

We went to this beach with our 2 year old and as you walk up to the shore line youāre hit with a beautiful beach! The most amazing beach Iāve seen! We were excited to jump in the amazing blueish, green waters but quickly realized the waves are massive. They can range from 2 feet to 6 feet and larger because the Pacific Ocean breaks the waves right at the shore line so thereās some huge power behind them. Once you swim out a little bit you can avoid the large waves but itās not a very child friendly beach. Stick to Weilea beach or the in town beaches.
We loved the sand because itās very different from the other beaches in town, itās almost too nice. Itās very sticky and doesnāt come off very easily and worst of all thereās no showers there to wash the sand off.
Other than that, itās a must see beach!

It's beautiful beach on Maui! Dreaming of laying out in the sun and enjoying one of many Big Island Beaches? š“ "I think 'Yes!".. Just stay there and enjoy it yourself!

We went to several beaches but this was our favorite. Not too crowded. Really large beach. Massive and aggressive waves. Love it.
The currents here are extremely strong so always be aware and do not turn your back on the ocean. It's almost a full-blown workout to stay on your feet and get up before the next wave comes to pummel you.
Highly suggest you do not lean into it with your back because it will mess you up.
We came back twice just to get away from crowds and for the fun waves. Must visit

We're from New Zealand so know a thing or two about strong currents and big waves but we don't experience shore breaks like they have in Maui. Our two boys (14 and 12yrs) absolutely loved it, being thrown around and both being pretty savvy in the water and understanding the ocean having grown up in and around it, they were confident but still careful. I am a big swimmer, it takes rather a lot for me to not go in and here I did not. I didn't fancy my chances of not breaking something being slammed onto the sand so I sat and drank in the view from my towel. We sat at the far end (away from Little Beach) under the lovely low trees there. I loved that this seemed more of a local beach. We purposely stayed away from Wailea Beach as that was just full of folks staying at the Resorts which always seems like a less natural environment to me.

The most beautiful beach for sunning and walking that we encountered in Maui. The vista was uninterrupted nature - green mountains, gorgeous views of the ocean and islands, amazing soft sand - no resorts or condos in sight. Shade was at a premium, so be sure to bring an umbrella or situate yourselves along the tree-line as you enter the beach. Didn't see any facilities like showers or bathrooms, but the large parking area had food trucks offering fish tacos and cold drinks.

I loved this place. The sand is to die for, it is a bit of a drive to get to but well worth it. just go prepared with snacks drinks and whatever else as i didnt really see anything there to buy stuff at. water is awesome with big waves but also good water on shore for the little ones. Its a must visit

This spot is straight out of a travel magazine. Itās gorgeous with the perfect waves crashing on the shore. Sand is fine grain and itās a great spot to relax. That said, do not swim. Do not have your kids play in the waves either. The break causes some strong waves to crash on the beach and it can cause injury and at times has a strong current that can drag you out. Itās one of the most beautiful beaches in Maui, but if you want to swim there are a ton of options besides this beach.

We came here twice during our stay on Maui and loved it. It wasnāt as busy as some of the other beaches, had lifeguards on duty and palm trees for some shade

Beach is great, sand is good! Waves break at shoreline so the locals call it Breakneck beach... it's a pretty good description. Be very cautious around the shore!

Beautiful. Soft white sand. Great for body surfing. Stunning blue water. My very favourite beach on Maui.

This was our first trip to Maui, and we discovered that we missed the wide sandy beaches of Oahu. However, Big Beach offers plenty of room and a wide, sandy expanse. The views are top notch. The surf was rough the day we visited, and the lifeguards were warning about dangerous shore break, but there were plenty of people on boogie boards and others playing in the surf. Tip 1: Change before you arrive. There are no changing rooms. Tip 2: Bring your own food and drinks. Tip 3: Parking can be difficult.

The lifeguards come on the PA every so often and announce the dangerous shore breaks and how people have broken their necks/backs. A lifeguard using the phrase 'threat of permanent paralysis' is not something I want to hear at a beach. Search for the beach online and you'll see the news stories. Beautiful to look at and you can sit under the shade of trees, but not worth the risk to actually swim in.

Visited in December 2014. We found this beach in a large book at the rental we were staying at. Beach lot is packed and we had to circle to get a parking spot. Beautiful golden sand beach. Long stretch to walk along. We sat and enjoyed the sun for a while. After that we went for a walk along the beach and dipped our toes in at times. Lots of room to spread out. It was busy, but not overly crowded along the sand.

Big beach review starts at second paragraph. Unknown name but awesome snorkeling beach first paragraph.
We went to a black & red sand beach (pictures attached) by the 4 Seasons and Grand Wailai Hotels which is a very nice area. This beach was located by a yellow gate about 50 yards before the entrance to Big Beach. If you were on big beach facing the ocean, there is a huge rock mountain on the far right, this beach is on the other side of that mountain. You can park all the way along the side of the dirt road, just make sure that that cars can get by. There are only about 10 actual parking spots at the end of the street, but like I said, this is a hidden gem and there were maybe 5 other tourists there over the 4 hrs we spent here. Now there is "supposedly" a nude beach near big beach, but either this was not it, or we went on the wrong day! It was very secluded and not many people on this beach at all. This had awesome snorkeling, but there was a lot of coral reefs immediately when you entered the water so it isnāt a good swimming location, but lava tubes and great fish! There are locals that free dive and spearfish in the caves between this beach and Big beach. If going in to the water, wear water shoes and go in the water straight down from the end of the dirt road.
Afterwards we went to Big Beach on the other side of the rock mountain (by the 4 Seasons and Grand Wailai Hotels) which is a very nice area. The 1st entrance was for most of the tourists and the 2nd entrance was where most of the locals went. This beach was amazing. It had soft yellow sandy and had life guards, but the waves were very big and break close to shore so it was a little dangerous. While we were there, there was a sting rip current w/ undertow. There were a lot of surfers and boogie boarders at this beach. But I recommend only very experienced boogie boarders enter when conditions are rough.
The first 5 pics are from the first beach, then last 5 pics are from big beach. Some of the free divers brought in some octopus that were the strangest thing I ever felt in my life!

If you are looking for a stretch of sand that will make you feel you are only one of a few there, then Big Beach is the spot for you. I suppose it is quieter than most of the others in the area because there are no bars or restaurants here and that makes the difference. There is lots of free parking, the waters strong but safe to swim.

It's a beautiful looking beach but not always the best to swim in (maybe to your waist). Not the best for kids either. The waves and the undertow are a bit of a risk but it is a beautiful beach to look at and have a rest on the sand. The water is clear and blue. The area is what you expect from a postcard of Maui. Located down the south east corner of Maui. There is a good sized carpark that I expect would fill quickly on weekends. There is also a lifeguard on duty and restrooms. No food outlets.

We visited this beach both times we visited, nice and big, plenty of room and shade (watch for thorns under the trees though). Be careful, can be serious waves/shore breaks that can knock you down if you're not careful!

I had a list of beaches to visit while in Maui. I visited this one first and came back a few times it was so beautiful. The water has an amazing color and the beach was pretty big and not crowded at all. You can also see Kaho'olawe and Molokini from here.

We visited Big Beach after a day of 'beach hopping' so we didn't actually swim in this beach, however, the whole family had fun with lots of sand drop offs to jump down and burn off more energy.

Soft sand and beautiful view!
Our favorite beach of Maui out the many we visited during our trip.
Not biggest beach, so unsure where the name came from, but well worth your time to go spend a day (or even half a day) to go check it out!

We got to play in the water, rest walk around and wonder at the marvels of nature. This place is pretty amazing!!!! There's a huge beach! Lifeguards are on duty, you can catch some waves or just swim. You do need to bring your own umbrella and chair and there are no services but it is a must see sight, it is simply beautiful and there is a food truck in the first parking lot in case you work up an appetite, as an added bonus-entry and parking are free!

We decided to go to Big Beach for a beach day and we were not disappointed. This was our favorite beach so far, and may be of the whole trip. The beachfront is wide and long, so there is ample space. The water is fairly warm. The sand is oh so soft!!! There isnāt any shade, so he sure to bring an umbrella and lots of sunscreen. Today there was a taco truck at the entrance; I donāt know if theyāre always there or not. Thatās the only food or beverage in the vicinity, so be sure to bring in lunch, snacks, and drinks. There are some porta-potties at the entrance as well. There are no other facilities. The kids did some boogie boarding, and we were able to see some unique fish while snorkeling. The setting was peaceful and serene - a perfect beach day!

This was our favourite beach on Maui for swimming in the waves. Big waves and a beautiful long sandy beach make for a ton of fun. But this is not the beach for someone with young children looking to swim, or anyone who is not a good swimmer. Constant announcements from the lifeguards warn swimmers to be careful. We got tossed around a lot and watched more than a few people who weren't really good enough swimmers to be in the surf get tossed around too. But the beach is beautiful. There are two parking lots you can use, and the second one further down the road tends to be less busy.

Enjoy the beach? This is the place for you!!! We loved it here. Such a great place to visit. Well worth your time to come here and spend the day!

This beach is worth the experience. As with all Maui beaches go early to fit into the parking lot & take lots of sunscreen. This is great for families too. At one end of the beach (if you are facing the water- it would be on your right hand side) there is a rocky cliff leading to another beach called little beach which is one of the places in Maui that you can see lots of overweight naked people if you are into nude beaches. Another nude beach is secret beach that they tell all of the tourists to go to it, but don't tell you it's a nude beach. Their are no signs so just be prepared--can't un-see some of it! Kind of spoils the view for the rest of us but big beach is all about families and really beautiful. Not so amazing for snorkeling but for body surfing, swimming, etc. it's spectacular. This whole area is also called Makena Beach.

I wish I would have read the reviews and knew more about this beach before we went. We had heard very good things about this beach and thought we'd try it out during our last day in Maui. The views from the beach didn't disappoint. However, the waves were very dangerous and after just a few minutes of being in the water we decided we should get out. Unfortunately a massive wave decided to throw us out before we could leave on our own accord. I ended up with a dislocated shoulder and my wife ended up with a concussion. The life guards on duty are very attentive and awesome; however, they're not allowed to help relocate shoulders. Also, come to find out the urgent care clinic in Wailea is a cash-only clinic; don't accept insurance. $1400 later my shoulder was put back in place. If I ever go back it will be for the views ONLY. I've read too many horror stories since then that make me grateful that I only hade a dislocated shoulder. It could have been much, much worse.

No doubt it is a big beach. It is real nice and since so big really does not get crowded but it is a long way from pretty much anything. It is not as if Maui is short on great beaches but if you are out that way worth a stop.
If you see people climbing up and over the rocks to the right (facing the ocean) that is the path to little beach which is a clothing optional beach - you have been warned

Absolutely gorgeous huge beach south of Wailea!!! Water was breathtaking and the view to Molokini crater and the other island were spectacular! Beautiful views if u walk down to the end and around the cove area with all the lava rocks!!!

FUN. Is long sandy beach. Waves crash and break close to shore makes for easy entry body surfing..... It can be bit scary and you will get tossed , flipped and disoriented. Sand truly everywhere for days.... However lots of fun with the kids. Can be crowded. We went late afternoon and it wasn't to bad I. In terms of numbers. A lot of fun!!!

This is part the Makena State Park. It's a very long area of beautiful sandy beach with several parking areas. The water is crystal clear and snorkeling is very good on the rocky outcrops. On the main parking lot entrance it has portable toilets but no water spigot to clean off the sand or drinking water. It does have a lifeguard and a Taco truck.. I felt the car was safer at this spot. This beach is not good for little kids because the wave action on the shore can be strong. It's a wide beach for the sun lovers. If you climb over the hill to the right, you find Little beach, which is not so little and has a lot of shade trees. However, Little Beach is a nudist beach but many people keep their suits on. The rocks to the right offer beautiful snorkeling. There's a trail over the rocks that offers beautiful coastal views. If you visit Big Beach on the other parking areas, you have less people and more shade trees. This is one of the best beaches in Maui.

This is my favourite beach here and we have been to a lot!
It has so much going for it. Easy access, long, clean, sandy beach that isn't over crowded. The view is amazing and during whale season you will get quite a show!
The waves are awesome but not too big that you can't enjoy going in the water, it's just so much fun here for every age!
There is a good food truck in the parking lot, but it's cash only.

Can't believe that they NOW charge for parking, which is understandable, but also JUST TO ENTER? $10 to park your car plus $5 per person = $20 per day for a couple. Beaches should be free for all of the human race.

This beach is beautiful!! It is not crowded though....why?? Well because it is dangerous! We didn't know this in advance and a group of 6 of us decided to spend the day. I am very familiar with the ocean and a strong swimmer. This didn't matter at Big Beach.
We tried snorkeling (not much to see) and our whole group was in and out of the water most of the day. Getting out of the water is tricky because of the very powerful shore break. There is no coral reef out in the water to help break the waves coming in and the literally break right on shore. Towards the end of the day, my friend and I were exiting the water. We were careful and watching for a break in the waves to do so. On our way out, a wave came out of nowhere and threw us both to the ground. I tore my MCL and was rendered helpless in the water. The wave beached me, dragged me back out in to the water and beached me again. I couldn't even get out of the ocean without help from my friends because the lifeguard hadn't gotten there yet. My friend broke her wrist.
The lifeguard was very helpful. Offered us a ride off the beach in the 4 wheeler and some ice packs. He also said the locals call this "breakneck beach" and we were lucky to have only injured our knee and wrist. He said in October alone there were 3 spinal cord injuries to swimmers on this beach.
Enjoy the beach from the beach. I didn't think something like this could happen in such a beautiful place, but it is very deceiving!

One of the most amazing beaches I've ever seen. It's no wonder they call it Big Beach. We stopped here in the evening to watch the sunset and it was nearly empty. The sand is sugary soft and stretches forever. I couldn't stop commenting on how clean it was. I can't speak to the roughness of the water, because we were there in the evening and it was pretty calm, not many swimmers.

The first beach we spent time on was Big Beach. As its name suggests - it covers a large area and has 2 lifeguard towers. We were there on a Tuesday and earlier in the day there was a lot of space but by the afternoon - while there was still room - the beach was much more busy. This beach is ideal to get your feet wet but it seems that unless you are an experienced ocean swimmer, you may not be swimming much here. The day we were there the lifeguard kept saying they don't recommend body boarding and to be careful because otherwise, you may break your back or neck. I found one of the parking lots and as someone mentioned there were a couple food trucks there during the day. This beach was beautiful and I would recommend it as one of your beach stops in Maui - keeping in mind that you may not get a lot of in the ocean time!

Great beach for swimming and riding a boogie board. Today the waves were quite large and a little rough, but overall it was a wonderful experience. My husband and I spent time out in the delicious water, In February!!!. :-) While we were there we saw a sea turtle meandering through the area and the beach was not at all crowded!

Worth the drive to experience the beauty and ruggedness of Big Beach. Be sure to take the hike to little beach which has sweeping views.

We got to this beach around 9am and found only a couple others who were there for body boarding. A beautiful open sand beach with trees and rock surroundings. A short walk under the trees from the parking to the beach front. Lifeguards on duty. Warning signs permanently posted about strong currents and breaks near shore. They also verbally reminded everyone that there are a lot of life-changing injuries that occur in the conditions this beach presents to inexperienced beach goers. We were joined by many others by 11am. This is not a beach for young children. We spotted a couple of whales. There are Kybo-type outhouses near the parking lot.

This was probably my very favorite beach on all of Maui and I'm surprised it doesn't have more reviews. It's a bit of a drive down to it, but don't let that keep you away. This beach is beautiful with great sand and great rocks at either end. I loved climbing up on the rocks on the north end and being able to look down over the whole beach. It's an easy climb of about 20-25 feet up. The view is great. Just be careful. If you keep going you'll end up on Little Beach which is a MAJOR nude beach. There's no road access to Little Beach, so people have to walk thru Big Beach to get there (they are clothed mostly when they do though). The parking to Big is great with 3 large parking lots. Loved this place and could have spent days on it. Yes, I know there are lots of great beaches on Maui, but this one is worth driving a bit more south for.

We spent some time on Big beach and little beach which was interesting to say the least. The best part was the shaved ice we bought from the food truck. Many other options to choose from.

The shore break might be a bit rough for some, especially children and elderly, but itās still exhilarating without being overly dangerous for most adults.
The views are incredible with Molokini and Kahoāolawe in the background. Thereās a short trail to the right which takes you to Little Beach (clothing optional) and is worth the hike to the top for the aerial view even if you donāt go down to LB.
The sand is some of the softest on Maui. However, a massive amount of sand gets kicked up in the shore break and will get in your bathing suit. Also, thereās a food truck serving tacos at the first of the three entrances to Big Beach.

The beautiful amazing Big beach. This beach offers beautiful scenery with water and island on the horizon and mountains behind. There is a lot of space to make a day here, get your umbrella (there is no rental service here), get your chairs, picnic cooler and enjoy the day. There are several food trucks around, but if you ask me I would recommend not to eat there, the food is not good at all. The water is pretty calm, so you can enjoy swimming.

I visited Big Beach in April 2016. The beach itself look wouderful. But as you see in other articles: The waves are sometimes dangerous. The Shorebreak is in a water depth of 3 feet. Means it could smash you on the ground.
During my stay I broke my neck (C7/TH1) on that beach. In the hospital, they told me, that this happens 40 times a year.

We have been coming to Maui for a number of years, and stumbled on Big Beach while exploring this area in the southern part of the island. It is a short ride from Wailea to this area, designated as Makena State Park. There is a decent parking area, including handicap spaces, and there are portable toilets on site. Several Lifeguard towers are along the beach, with lifeguards on duty during the day. The beach is beautiful and curves slightly, from a wooded area at one end to a big hill at the other. Surf is active, water is very clean and clear. Signs warn of a shoreline drop off, so use caution in those areas, especially during active waves and surf. But oh man, what a pristine and wonderful beach. Check it out!

Awesome sandy beach with a lot of room for everyone to enjoy the views of the south part of Maui.
The shore break is wicked if there is south swell, so be careful if you aren't savvy in the ways of entering and exiting a heavy shore break.
To the north you can go over to the nude beach.
Best parking is the 2nd gate entrance.
Great place to watch the locals hit some waves on the south part of the beach.

Really nice sand. The water was nice, although the waves were a little intense... not bad, but not best for people who aren't strong swimmers.
Beautiful scenery.
Parking lot is not huge, so best to get there early.

Stunning view when you climb up the rock between Big Beach and Small Beach. Waves were so rough when we arrived there about 2pm. We decided not to get in the water and we were glad with that decision coz there was a man hurting his hip when jumping into the big wave. Lifeguard team had to take him to hospital as he couldnāt move at all.

We went on a Saturday afternoon. We had a family member with mobility issues and they were able to make it down to the beach. The lifeguards told us we can always come down and ask if they can give them a ride if they arenāt busy. They gave her a ride back to the car when we were leaving. Very nice!!!
The water was very clear. Beach is very soft sand. The water had a VERY strong current. My husband got washed up a few times and lost his water shoe to the ocean. We had fun body surfing. The guards didnāt recommend boogie boarding due to water conditions. I wouldnāt recommend this beach for any inexperienced or small swimmers. The water would flood the beach. Waves were unpredictable and very strong. We had a blast and are going back. It was about 1.25 hours from Kaanapali area.

We drove over an hour to get there and the lifeguard said the waves were out of control and he suggested we go to a different place. There were SO many people there and it was NOT worth the drive. Find a special spot on your own and go somewhere else.

Probably one of the most breath taking beaches I have been on.
Beautiful sand....and amazing surf!!! The day that we visited Big Beach, the surf was high and I'm a chicken in rough water, so we didn't go into the water past our ankles. We only ended up staying a few hours since it was a HOT day on the beach with no way to cool off.

Beautiful beach BUT Hawaii State beaches now charge $10 per car AND $5 per person. There is a lot attendant to help you.
The good part to the fees... the beach and parking lot are empty.
Still our favorite beach.

There is a fair bit of parking but always a good idea to show up early to ensure you get a spot.
This beach can be windy and waves can be unpredictable so pay attention to your surroundings - don't turn your back to the waves even if you're not in the water as they can still attach you unexpectedly.
this beach has life guards who like to keep fit and work out on the beach - nice scenery ;-)

My wife and I and another couple visited Maui in early February for 10 days, our second trip there. This trip I wanted to visit some the non-main attractions, and Big/Little Beach was one I had researched and planned on seeing.
The parking lot is 1-200 yards from the actual beach, which you arrive at walking along a sand/gravel path through an open woodsy area. When you emerge from the trees the beach opens up in both directions, looking like a little slice of paradise. There is a rocky cliff to the right, over which you climb to arrive at Little Beach (which is clothing optional).
Big Beach is in fact quite large (deep) compared to most I have seen on Maui, with a large amount of space to set up for the day. The main beach today at least was several feet higher than the water, and then there was a small, 2-3 foot, drop off and then 15-20 feet to the waters edge. There was a lifeguard on duty, and as we settled in an announcement came on for several minutes warning everyone about the extremely strong surf. He explained that the bottom dropped-off quickly after entering the water, and that this caused the waves to build and crash heavily right next to shore. If you stood/walked in this shallow waters edge a wave could (most likely would) hit/unbalance you and throw you to the ground, possibly injuring/breaking and arm or you back. This happens every year according to the life guard.
I did enter the water later, quickly swimming out past the drop-off and I found the water calm and relaxing. You do need to be careful and plan well when getting out later.
We watched some teenage boys skimboarding into the waves as they came ashore, and they seemed pretty capable. So, I guess if you gain some experience (and have the agility of a 15 year old) the risk is lower...
Two of us made the climb up and over the Little Beach. It was definitely challenging, and I wouldn't recommend barefoot or in flip flops. The surf on that side seemed milder, and there were a number of people out swimming there. I won't add much about the view, but needless to say it would be a fun adventure for the open-minded.
On the way back out to the car there was a food truck in the parking lot with great fish tacos.
*One last note, the waves/surf was extremely high on the entire western coast of Maui that day, and many excursions were canceled. So it is likely that the surf danger at Big Beach that day was not normal.
If we ever go back to Maui again I will definitely try to find time to spend an afternoon there again.

This is an absolutely gorgeous beach - long, picturesque and when we were there (on a Saturday in winter) it was surprisingly quiet. The big excitement for me was being able to watch whale breach as we walked along the water. The sand here seems much more white than other beaches in Maui. Loved it!

Love this beach. Strong waves for boogie board surfing. Wave breaks can knock you down so little kids, old people need supervision..

Wow! The Sand is warm, the surf is dangerous, this is a must for breathtaking views of one of the most beautiful beaches created!

This is a very beautiful beach, but also incredibly deceiving at how dangerous it can be. I'm an experienced ocean swimmer/surfer and went out for a bit of body surfing here. The waves didn't seem large at all, and I must have not noticed the warning signs as you enter the beach. The first wave I caught, I dropped down and hit the bottom. My back was a bit sore, but luckily I was otherwise unhurt. I immediately exited, and shortly afterward the lifeguards started announcing all the various injuries that regularly occur here.
If you go here, just admire the beauty from the sand. The shore break here is no joke.

This is usually my favourite beach to spend time walking the length of the beach, climbing the cliff or looking a the World War II pillbox or lava rock on the south end. The waves on our one visit this vacation were very strong, and the undertow had my wife caught up in the sand, just about losing her lower bathing wear and needing a hand to pull her out of her predicament. I managed to get out to the deeper water safely that day, but we wound up going to a beach in Wailea the rest of our vacation.
On a calmer day, I have been able to float in the calm water and watch sea turtles swim nearby.

Be careful when you go to this beach. The waves crash right on shore, and depending on the day, you could be seriously injured. That said, this is the most beautiful beach on Maui. The clearest water, long stretch of yellow sand, view of molokini in this distance, and great for playing in the waves. Great place to watch the sun set too. My son (13) had a blast playing in the waves. I wouldn't take small kids here though, the waves are just too dangerous.

A good beach to get sun, and hang out doing beach stuff.
Nothing too see as far as snorkeling goes though, and parking can be a pain, may have to walk a bit to get to the shore.
The sunset is wonderful, you won't be disappointed in that if you enjoy a good sunset.

This beach is by far my favourite in Maui!! Waves are bigger than right in Kihei so you need to be a decent swimmer. Water is crystal clear and has amazing views. There is also a lifeguard here, and food trucks for quick lunch!! The only thing missing is a shower to rinse the sand off when leaving.

This is a gorgeous beach. A long stretch of white sand and turquoise waters. It does look like a postcard beach. The downfall is that very often thereās dangerous shore break which kept us out of the water, but itās so beautiful. Well worth the drive for a beach stroll or some nice pictures.
Lifeguards on duty, port a potties, no showers though.
On your way there stop by the coconut stand, delicious!

This beach is huge and there wern“t many ppl around. But we found that it was rather cloudy, so we switched for a much sunnier beach just a few k“s up the road.

When we went there were very big waves and the lifeguard was warning people to be very cautious. That being said, the boogie boarding was crazy haha

Big Beach is a public beach in Makena Beach State park. For our visit today we chose to go to the 3rd entrance. The entrance itself is not marked and their is not a parking lot, but parking can be found on the side of the road. A short walk on the path will lead you to the beach. If you are looking for a relaxing spot away from tourists, then this is probably a good choice. Their are no facilities (restrooms or rental) here so it keeps some of the crowds away. The water is fairly calm. Enjoy!

Always lots going on at big beach. Hardly any waves today but be careful when they are pounding in. Lots of room here and always lots going on. Take a walk to little beach for some sight seeing (nude beach). Very nice fine sand. Lifeguards and washroom at big beach. Three entrances to the beach. I like the third entrance Best.

We went to this beach and the sand is soft and rehabilitating. The water is stunning. You will need to get 10 to 15 yards off shore to get outside the shore break. This is a very dangerous beach for hanging in the break.
If you feel adventurous then head over the volcanic rock and explore Little Beach....do not take the kids as Little Beach is where swimsuits are optional.

We had to come here to see this beautiful beach, there are lifeguards there and they warn you that the beach is not user friendly, that it breaks necks and backs! We listened for sure, the surf was unreal here, it was so strong and so big, Iām not sure why you wouldnāt listen and just watch or stand on the edge! Even standing at the edge where the water comes in you can feel the strength and current as the sand washes out from under your feet. It was so beautiful there! We saw red cardinals on the patch leading down to the beach, it was magical! Highly recommend checking out this beach! Loved it!

Visited today and loved the uncrowded and natural, rugged feel of this beach after the overly manicure ones in Wailea.
Waves incredible which added a gear frisson to the whole affair and water crystal clear which was lovely - fave beach so far for Maui
Rob

We drove down to see Big Beach. It was a lovely beach, although I probably wouldn't drive really far out of the way to visit.

Strong current, so not suitable for younger kids unless they just play in the sand. Waves are fun though, especially for some boogie boarding. Spectacular views of whole beach from cliff that connects big beach and little beach. Sandals or shoes recommended to climb up the path. Little beach is clothing optional, so be prepared!

The beach, located just south of the hotel strip in Wailea is a nice respite from "tourist central" and provides the perfect place for those who like to walk on a beach. It is 1.5 miles long with nicely packed sand near the water. This was our second visit -- we were here two years ago but between the heat and the wind didn't spend as much time as we'd like. this time, the temps were in the mid-70s and there was only a light wind. Although the parking lots gave the impression that the beach would be crowded, once on the beach we found it fairly sparse in terms of people. It was a great walk -- 3 miles in total, taking about an hour in the sun and salt air. For beach walkers it is a great find!

Great beach, the waves are wild and you have to be on your toes if you have small children with you. They come at you from two sides. So much fun.

Great beach for the whole family with a lifeguard on duty. Plenty of parking and a good truck as well. Restrooms are portapotties.

Nice beach with soft sand and plenty of space. Waves are kinda strong though...
If your lucky you might see dolphins in the water. We saw some and the couple next to us told us, they witnesses how a whale gave birth once, just at this beach...

I love this beach! Be aware of the current and the crashing waves and may not be the best for poor swimmers. We love watching the whales and people trying to maneuver in the surf! It is in Makena State Park and at times can get busy depending on the time of year. Only port-a-potties.

The waves at the south end of big beach are huge and there is a strong undercurrent. We did venture in to ride the waves but this isn't a swimming beach, at least not when we visited. The south end has trees so some shade but when we visited there were a lot of weeekenders smoking dope and the language wasn't family friendly so be careful where you setup up, especially if you have children.

this was my first time to this beach, and it's now my favorite on the island, but I haven't seen them all yet. the parking is limited so make sure you go early.

Nice soft sand perfect for sandcastles...beautiful aqua blue water...box jellyfish warning today...other riptide warnings posted...swimming not so good for Littleās.

Watching the kids and their boogie boards is a lot of fun. Great waves and decent snorkeling are right here.
As is a great location for just sitting and enjoying the spectacular beauty of this island.
One very nice thing about it is most tourists do not go to the trouble of finding thse beaches , so the locals are there and the space available to visitors is impressive.
Great spot

We visited around 10-12 beaches while in Maui for two weeks, and this was near the top of our list - and my kids. Raw beautiful everywhere - almost a mile long, almost a 100 yards deep of soft, deep sand. Views of multiple islands. Water here is very clear and blue/green. But as many other posters mention - be careful of the surf. This is a steep shoreline - and depending on the surf conditions that day it could be very rough. I have three kids age 9 - 15 and I made us all scoot down the beach to be directly in front of one of the lifeguard stations. Do not become complacent and turn your back on the ocean - occasional rogue waves do hit - and you will know it! Use good judgement - if the surf is up being in the water with your kids or in front of the lifeguard stand may not necessarily be enough should a big wave come in. You cannot stop your kids from being picked up, tossed around and drug back out just because you are out there with them (or yourself for that matter!). One day was calmer - was great for body surfing. One day was too much - moved family north to a calmer beach. Just port a potties here by the road - no facilities. To my family - best views of all the beaches we went to, and most what we had envisioned Maui beaches being like. Note - be forewarned - should you venture up the trail on the north side of the beach over the lava outcropping you will most likely be greeted by a nudist or two on the adjacent Little Beach. If that's not for you - just give 'em the shaka sign and head back.

Visited Big Beach twice at sunset. Such beautiful scenery! Beach is not crowded at sunset. The sand is soft and fine. Eady walk in from parking lot. Food truck in parking lot. Lifeguards on duty.

We took the whole family here and enjoyed the beach and ocean. It was a nice day and the water was nice. We all enjoyed the time together here and had a small picnic while relaxing.

Lots of beautiful soft sand! Lifeguard present. The waves were great for boogie-boarding. No shower facilities, restrooms are outhouses and it is remote. Make sure to pack whatever you need for the day, but there can be a bit of a walk from the parking lot, depending on how busy it is.

We walked along the beach in late afternoon. Sand was soft and deep. Not a lot of people, but great scenery. Water was a bit too roughy for snorkelling today.

This is a large beach with soft white sand. It's the typical beach that people go to when vacationing it seems, this is located very close to the resorts that most vacationers stay at on the island and it's rarely cloudy here. It's a beautiful place to be and enjoy when relaxing, depending on the day, can have breathtaking views. There is a lifeguard at this beach, which is also a perk. One major warning for people though is that this beach can be very dangerous if it isn't respected. The shore break is VERY rough and routinely grabs people, tosses them and then drops them out directly onto the sand. Working in healthcare, I have seen many injuries, some of which are very serious/life threatening to broken bones, this is definitely somewhere that should be respected when enjoyed and watch the shore break before going in as well as dive under the break, not try to make it over it because it's deceiving.

My wife and I were in the area and decided to check it out. We walked the short hike from the parking lot and found a truly humongous beach. It seemed fairly clean and spacious, and there is sometimes a lifeguard on duty. The waves were pretty rough, even right at the shore, which is not something Iām used to seeing.

This beach was recommended to us by our hotel concierge - I understand it's one of the most famous beaches in Maui but it is completely unsuitable for a tourist family with children / teenagers. The wave break is extremely dangerous. The lifeguard saw us walking up with our boogie boards and immediately announced that it was advised as too dangerous for boogie boards or body surfing, because of dangerous (10 ft+) wave break, which results in injuries including dislocated joints, broken back and broken neck. We asked if there was anything unusual with the conditions - no, that's just how Big Beach usually is. There was hardly anyone else in the water. We went in briefly and a huge wave smashed me (6'2'', 200 lbs) into the ground. We left and went a short way to Po'olenalena which was great for boogie boarding and snorkeling. If you are a tourist, especially with children, SKIP BIG BEACH, it's too dangerous.

Came to Big Beach (Makena) twice in our 8 day Maui vacation. First day was mild but still strong undertow making it unsafe for children under 14-15. First visit entered via Beach access 1, which has ample parking, but is a long walk through trail and deep sand to the beach. Overall, still a great time but must stay with and give personal attention to any young ones. Second visit left he children at home and entered via Beach lot #2. Less parking available but probably 1/4 the distance to the action. Get here by 10am and parking should be ok. Waves were totally wild this time with the waters unsafe for all but good, experienced swimmers who are paying attention. On numerous occasions the life guard via PA system warned everyone to get out of the water due to sudden reef breaks, the undertow and incoming sets of waves over 15 ft high. One second you were 20-30 feet from the water on dry ground and the next you were knocked off your feet. Definitely not a place for anyone alone or under 16 who isn't strong in the water and waves. Chairs and belongings had to be rescued by many people who did not heed the warnings. Overall, a great time with 8 seconds between the loud crashing surf that hit up to a 1/2 mile section of beach simultaneously. The surfers gather at the south end and park on the main road for access. The good ones had a great time in the large surf, but only experienced borders should apply, with rocks and coral outcrops at this end. Overall, one should not pass up seeing this magnificent force of nature when in Maui, but leave the children at Wailea Beach or the pool.

We were staying in Kihei and would find ourselves at this beach almost daily. The sand at this beach is amazing. It's a very long beach and lots of room. Water was warm. Lots of people go to this beach and parking can be limited if you don't get there early. We generally would arrive around 10:30 am and stay the day and would find a pretty good spot to park. Just over the hill is Little Beach. This is a beach for nudists. You can't see if from Big Beach as it's over a hill.

State Park. $10 for car and $5 per person if not a resident. Parking. You can also park for free at road -100 or so yards.
Nice small consistent waves. Locals and tourists alike. Small beach on the other side of a large rock outcropping is a nudist beach.

Big Beach is by far the most natural beach without a gazillion hotels surrounding it. You want natural Hawaiian beauty? Go here. GREAT snorkeling along the reef by the trail to Little Beach. I couldn't encourage you more to go here. GORGEOUS. QUIET. BUT BEWARE OF THE SHOREBREAK! If it's a hard breaking day, it can break your neck.

I absolutely loved going to this beach, however, it is not ideal for small children or even body boarding. My husband and I enjoyed hanging out in the waves, but if you want a nice relaxing time this isn't the place for you, unless you stay on the sand.

This was a great beach to go to. Thanks to COVID, there were only about 20 people on the entire beach. The surf was fun to play in and the views were great!

We have been to Maui on numerous occasions. This by far our favourite beach. May not be as great for families with very young children as the water can be a little rough, especially when the trade winds come in.

The name says it all, itās a big beach. And because of its size, finding space to sun and relax is easy. Parking can be a challenge as it is limited; also adding to ease in finding beach space.
There is a large beach patrol station. The life guards use megaphones to remind swimmers to be careful. This is not a beach for young children as the waves are large, powerful, and unpredictable.

This beach has sooooo much room for everyone to spread out and enjoy the surf and sand. The vast beach has to be seen to be believed. Spend the afternoon here!

Just below Wailea, this beach offers some great views and water fun. Around the bend is Little Beach. There are facilities and a couple of different parking areas.

This beach is one of the largest and most beautiful beaches of all the Hawaiian islands! The views of Kahoāolawe and Molokini are astounding from here. Big Beach GREAT for swimming, surfing and boogie boarding⦠but do TAKE CARE. There is an intense shore break, quite characteristic to this particular beach. If you are a strong swimmer and wise to the ways of the ocean, you will have da kine time :-)

One big gorgeous stretch of beautiful beach with seriously fun waves - huge! Food trucks, toilets, lifeguards, etc. Byo shade and have a great day.

Big Beach is awesome! We started bringing our son and his cousin here years ago and this beach is terrific AND popular. Usually a food truck on the way and at the park gate. Parking can be tricky, but keep trolling. Fun people watching and you'll see whales here too. Be careful in the surf, it can be pretty big. Sometimes some trash and foot hazards on the way to the beach. Have fun!!!!

We became creatures of habit and set up for sunbathing, relaxing, and reading at Big Beach. It is a great place to relax and soak in UV rays. It is a truly beautiful spot but it is not a recreational beach. Stay attentive to the shore break which can be quite violent when you venture into the water. We always had tons of space to ourselves. I was surprised that pets were allowed on the beach as neighboring sunbathers brought their dogs and let them wizz and dump on the beach...not cool.

Huge crashing waves. Not a good place for young children but the beach was beautiful. We just stopped to look then moved on.

This is a lovely sandy wide beach near the nature sanctuary. Good snorkeling. There are multiple parking lots so avoid the crowds at the first one. There are lifeguards and all the safety equipment.

Large beach with easy access. No changing rooms or running water, but porta potties available. We had great water, gentle surf and thinning crowds in the late afternoon. First beach we would go back to on Maui!

Great beach. It wasn't very crowded. They need to build restrooms. The ports a potty are disgusting and filthy.
You will have a Great sunset view. There are other beaches near by with bathrooms.

Yes this beach was very big but the one thing that we did not do was get in it. The waves were just to big and even the life guard was warning everyone. He would say that they did not want you to break your neck, they wanted us to enjoy our families and our trips. Do not get in if you are standing in front of the waves. You have not gotten in do not do it. Very big beach but not happy for the waves coming and sticking everyone down.

this is one of the most scenic beaches to visit. ok to swim if low surf. if surf's up it is not safe for children and unprepared adults.

Went here back in 2007 really had a great time when we went the waves were kinda tiny. But we had a great time. A little bit of a walk from parking lot to the beach but that was ok. Not a good place to snorkel if that's what u are looking to do....

Four points only because there are no sanitary facilities on the beach, only three portable toilets, which unfortunately were all very dirty and stank unbelievable. Otherwise, very nice beach (without shadow, however) with a bit of rocks and perfect waves. And we saw whales! Very close to the beach, a really great spectacle of nature and without disturbing the animals with a tour boat in their natural environment.

This beach is NOT for children or the elderly or pregnant or inexperienced swimmers. The waves come fast and hard and can toss you around like you are nothing. Beautiful wide beach with shade trees and no crowds. Lifeguard on duty, frequently warning people not to body surf or stay on the shore break.

Though not creative, this beach is aptly named. :) It's huge! The day we went was gorgeous weather and the beach was amazingly uncrowded. On the day we went, wind was calm and surf mild. The most perfect swim of my life. The whole family loved it.

This beach is BEAUTIFUL with lots and lots of sand! It's great for sun bathing and relaxing. The shore break waves here are dangerous though. The water was really rough when we visited. We only stayed for a little while because the water was too rough to boogie board. There are no showers or running bathrooms here. Just a port-a-potty.

We spend a half day at this beach and had a great time, the sand and water were fantastic. The one thing you have to worry about is the waves crashing onto the beach. They are not genital waves, they hit hard and can injure you. There are life guards on duty and will let you know when the waves are dangerous. There was two food trucks close to the beach and a couple more just outside, we brought our own food. This was a great way to spend a day on Maui.

Two different days two different experiences. The waves are peri calm one day. The announcements from the life guards are few and far between. We had no issues getting in and out of the surf safely. The water was clear and the waves did roll so you still had to keep an eye on them and respond accordingly. The next time they were a little bigger but still considered rather calm. The announcement were coming from the life guards in a regular basis including call outs to specific Beach goers who were not adhering to the instructions for a safe swim. We did see a number of people, young and older, knocked over and tumbled by an unsuspected wave.
We wandered from end to end, enjoyed the surf, enjoyed people watching, had a picnic and would love to come back again.

I enjoyed strolling on the beach. There were people peppered along the beach but it in no way felt crowded. Lots of people on boogie-boards playing in the waves, families and pets.
Parking was very challenging to find and several people were observed getting stuck. Use common sense and be patient.

While we stayed on Maui we did look at a few beach's but Big Beach was the one for us.Its huge, clean and the sand is second to none. The place is just fantastic. There is limited parking in the two park lots but we never had to leave because of not finding a spot. There is two lifeguard stations on the beach but no other facilities like washrooms or eats...The one caveat is that since its on the same line as the Haleakala Volcano the clouds from it seem to build up over the day and by afternoon obscure the sun.Not every day but it does happen fairly often. Also the shore break is larger here than nearby beach's so be careful when entering the water you can get pounded by a wall of water!!

Sorry this is NOT a swimming beach for all you novice or even amateur swimmers. This is a serious surfer only beach. They warn about the dangers over a bullhorn and they are not kidding. The waves can be up to 20 feet high and the pounding of the surf is phenomenal. Great for pictures but don't be dumb- stay clear of the surf!!!!! You can walk up the cliff to little beach or get a fantastic view of the big beach. Beware though for people with faint hearts or small children for little beach is a nudist beach. Pictures of this little beach can show more than you wish to see

Even in the pouring rain, this is a beautiful place to visit. You can walk for miles to the south, see lava outcroppings with cool tidal pools.

We visited on a Sunday afternoon and there was plenty of space. Some people set up a volleyball net and everyone was welcome to join. Nice views from the nearby cliff but try not to creep on the nude beach.

High and violent waves. We had a great afternoon trying not to fall. Of course we failed!! But we had a really good time. There are no facilities (no shower, no Cafe, no rental staff). Few people. Unforgettable.

One of our favorite Maui beaches south of Maalaea. The beach itself lives up to itās name ... itās a big beach; expansive with sand warm and clean and inviting (describes most south beaches really). The shoreline, although spectacular, has a steep rapid shore break to it. The surf is best suited to skim/boogie boarding if thatās you thing. Our grown sons swam out past the shore break zone and into deeper water. They are strong swimmers and commented after they felt a bit uncomfortable. Lifeguard stations do dot the beach and were manned by diligent lifeguards during daylight hours, thankfully. There is ample parking in the area, and port-a potties line the parking lot area.
Lazing in the sun and sand, admiring the coastal view and people watching the boarders was worth the stop for us.

Big Beach is a great place to spend an afternoon relaxing by the ocean. Uncrowded and peaceful. Good for snorkeling. Food truck is a plus!!

This beach is beautiful!!! BUT...Be very careful!!! I thought I was being careful and safe, but it isn't really possible at Big Beach with the powerful huge waves pounding you to the shore! I was relaxing on an intertube and when the Lifeguard said "Unless you are a very experienced swimmer, you shouldn't be in the water," I tried to exit the water safely, but just when I last suspected it, a huge wave pummeled me into a boulder just underneath the water on the sandy shore. My arm was instantly throbbing and injured from the elbow to the wrist. It soon became a huge bruise and it looked like I was wearing a purple sleeve for the rest of my trip. : ( I'm still recovering and it still hurts. The doctor said there aren't any broken bones, but there are three lumps that really hurt, so it might turn out there was a hairline fracture. This happend the week of June 2-8. Thank you, Nice Lifeguard Lady, for giving me an ice pack! It helped tremendously!

I loved the beach but it seems incredibly surprised that there were no signs about the danger and the sharks around. I am still freaking out after reading the reviews about the lack of information when you get to the beach. I understand each one has to evaluate the danger !

The far south end of this beach is primarily locals. IF you are EXTREMELY comfortable in water its a great spot. The first parking lot tends to be visitors, w/lifeguards constantly shouting warnings for silly but dangerous ocean behaviors. Beach has long lava bed running the length. Locals having boisterous boogie board impromptu "contest" & when swell picked up great surf for experienced. My daughter was told by lifeguard if she ventured out the locals would let her "have" 1 wave...if she caught it, they'd "allow" her to stay & catch more. She said the gave her the stick eye...but we're very nice once she caught wave. This beach is in Makena.

It's fun to play with the waves and we saw even some whales playing in the front of the shore.
We've been there on a sunday and the beach was pretty busy but still ok.

This is a gorgeous spot and wasn't busy when we were there. Unfortunately, we were unable to go into the water due to the massive waves and breaks. It would have been a beautiful spot to swim for sure but not the day we were ther. Good parking and there is a lifeguard in duty. I would definitely check this lace out if you're looking for a beautiful Maui beach.

NO ONE sees to note that Hawaii has recently put the Big Beach as well as the Black Sand Beach as Malena (?) State Park and charges a ridiculously expensive entry and parking fee. Entry fee $5 per person and parking fee $10 per car. So for a car with 3 people, it is $25, for a beach. Not cool. It is a great beach, but it is simply not the same as Diamond Head or Waiʻanapanapa. Find a beach closer to your resort and just enjoy that.

A great beach! Slightly off the usual beaten track of Maui's many beautiful beaches. Plenty of people there but not crowded at all. Try the fish tacos in the parking lot or at the food truck just before the entrance to the parking lot.

Big Beach is located in the Makena area of Maui, just south of a cinder cone on the coast. As the name implies, it is relatively large sandy beach. There is at least one parking lot to use to access the beach. But unlike the other sandy beaches in the Makena/Wailea areas, this one has a very dangerous shore break that has caused numerous spinal injuries. There is no snorkeling off this beach as well. According to a news article about the latest injury that nearly killed a man, the time between wave sets at this beach can be long, giving the impression of a calm beach with no waves. But when the sets do come in, the surf they produce strikes with enormous force. Look but don't go in the water. The other beaches in the area are much safer.

Long and beautiful beach with very soft sand. I can confirm the strong and high waves, so decide on swimming only if you are a decent swimmer. Lifeguards are on duty, free parking along the street is possible if you come early (approx. before 9 am). Entrance fee is 5 USD per person (October 2022), parking at the beaches parking lot is 10 USD per car (plus entrance fee).

If want a HUGe stretch of beach that's not crowded at all, go here!! They had turtles lay eggs and helped 200 of them get to the ocean safely.
Hike up a small rocky cliff on the left side and you will find small beach. (NUDE BEACH) Do not bring your kids over there, it is a nudest beach. It is isolated so no worries bumpin into it by accident. However, if your adventurous like us, without kids you'll find hanging out there for a day the best experience ;)

Your best to feeling like you are on a more natural less developed beach on Maui. After visiting Kauai and loving the solitude of their beaches, this was the best option. There were lots of wake boarders and people along the beach but you had the luxury to be a little more spaced out than some of the other well known and highly visited beaches on Maui.

This beach is in the Makena State park. There are at least three places to park, but finding a spot is always difficult. But, it is worth the effort. This mile long beach is great for walking or sunning, and it is never crowded.

Big beach in Makena is a must see! Beautiful golden sand and crystal blue waters, what Hawaiian dreams are made of. Be sure to drive down ahead to LaPerouse bay, may see dolphins at sunrise! Climb over the black rock at big beach, this is the most beautiful view you will ever serš little beach has a great vibe, yes, itās a nude beach, but not what you think. Clothes are optional, this is where youāll find some true characters! From 75 year old nude surfers, to hipsters. Very chill place, didnāt see anything weird, faint smell of mauiwowie never hurts snyineš“ just wear dark glasses and let the entertainment begin. Sunday night is drum circle and fire dancing... may even see Steven Tyler!

This is Makena State Park. There are three parking areas all of which are usually full and people end up parking along the road. Restrooms and/or port-a-potties are in the parking lot. Food trucks if you don't bring your own.
The beach is beautiful golden soft sand and you can walk about a mile up and down the beach. Shorebreak waves are just mesmerizing. Good thing there are lifeguards as too many people don't understand the danger of those waves.

Beach is clean and awesome. The day we went waves didnāt seem to be that big but it knocked me down. We had lots of fun. Suggest bringing your own food. Trucks just outside beach are expensive and food isnāt that good, unless you like lots of lettuce.

This beach is populated by a few families, a lot of couples, and a good mix of locals and tourists.
The sand is soft and the water is clear which makes it a perfect resting spot. There is also a lifeguard on duty until 4:30pm. But there are no showers on running water, so be sure to bring provisions.
Feeling adventurous? Climb the rocks on the north end to Little Beach (The Nudist Beach).
Our biggest piece of advise is to be wary of the shore breaks. This beach leads the nation in injuries to the neck, back and spine. The shore breaks can often build and roll over with immense power. We watch numerous American tourists completely ignore the advice of the lifeguard who urged them to swim past the break. Instead they threw themselves into the breakwater and found themselves repeatedly slammed into the beach, laughing without concern for how dangerous that really is.
Overall, it was our favourite spot on the island and a great spot to watch the sun go down on a perfect day.

This beach has a top 5 all-time great color combination of coral sand, tropical ocean and brilliant sky. It is staggeringly bright, beautiful, romantic and expansive. It opens your mind to amazing color. Plus, there is usually a cool group of skim boarders to watch perform their off the lip trips. The beach is huge, so you can go off and find a private spot, if you want. The water is usually fine for all ages of swimmers to enjoy. We love going there for the afternoon. The lifeguards are diligent, too

This is the type of picture perfect beach you imagine when you dream of coming to Hawaii! The sand is soft and golden, and the water is various shades of blue and aqua. This is a rough beach with crashing waves and a strong undertow. They do not recommend snorkeling here, but it is fun to wade in and just walk the shoreline. We arrived about 10 AM on a Wednesday and the parking lot still had plenty of spaces and an attendant there to help direct you. There was a small parking fee which then allowed you to access big beach and little beach. In order to get to the black sand beach (there are three beaches in McKenna State Park), you do have to re-park down the street. But big beach is by far the main attraction. There are life guards

Big Beach is on the southern tip of Maui a few miles south of Wailea. There was lots of Parking. Unlike the beach in Lahaina which is basically right in the town, Big Beach (and Little Beach) is fairly out of the way so it's quieter. The Beach is huge and there are no bars or restaurants which can actually be a good thing. Very quiet and peaceful. The waves can be quite big so be careful with the kids. Speaking of kids, you may not want to scale the little hill at the end of the beach which leads you to Little Beach unless you don't mind nudity.

Did not stay here, was very hot, not place to get any shade, No place to get extra water, Not very safe for kids
This beach was amazing to see, inspiring but very hot, waves were very strong, lots and lots of people. Water was at the beginning of the trail so a long walk if you needed some. Bathrooms were quite a hike also. IF you want to go here please please prepare, you will need to have lots of sunscreen, things for the kids to do and hide them from the sun as there is not place to hide.

Fun, big beach with the family. When we visited this beach, the surf was easy last November. It lives up to its name - It is a big beautiful beach in Maui!

We went there for the Sunset! Very beautiful and quiet! This beach is a gem! Nice place to swim and have a bar be que!

After a short walk from the parking lot, this beach is vast. Far from the water's edge is a line of trees for some shade. There is a lifeguard on duty. The waves break hard here. Not the beach for you if you just want to hang out in the water. But for sunning, it's a perfect beach.

Beautiful beach that slopes down to the water, super strong currents, that can knock you down and pull you under. Be cautious and aware since that can happen when you least expect.
If your in de ent shape and up for a bit of a climb, you can hike over to Little beach, clothing optional but, incredible water without so much danger in currents.
There is a lifeguard on Big beach when our world is normal, none now though.
Parking can be a struggle when itās high tourist season, there is a $10 fee for parking (residents are free) and the car will be towed if not paid. There are kiosks to pay at with a credit card. You can park outside the lot and walk in with no fee.

Big beach is just that. A very expansive beach that provides great views of both Molokini and Kahoāolawe. We had no problems with parking, but we arrived at about 1030 on a Tuesday morning. The day we were there, the beach was not crowded, but there were more folks north towards the lifeguard tower. A great beach for just lying out and relaxing. Surf was a little rough so if you are not a good swimmer just beware.

This is one of the best beaches in Maui for families. It is very long and wide so there is always plenty of room. It gets a lot fewer visitors than the more centrally located beaches. The water is not particularly safe for young children but teenagers should have fun in the surf.
Big Beach is part of a fairly isolated State park so there aren't many facilities there, apart from a few food trucks. Be sure to bring your own food, drinks, etc. There are Porta-Potties but nothing fancier than that.
The lifeguards are very nice and a great source of knowledge about local conditions. Be sure to ask them any questions you might have.
The walk to Big Beach from Kihei or Wailea is very nice for the more energetic types. My wife and I have done it a number of times. Budget about an hour and a half each way. The route is easy to figure out: just stay on the beach path or whichever road is closest to the ocean.
For cyclists there is a cycling lane nearly the entire way on Wailea Alanui and Makena Alanui.
Parking is available but can get tight on weekend afternoons. This beach is very popular with locals.
Stick around for the amazing sunsets.

Used to be far off the beaten path. Now itās easy to access. Actual paved parking lot with occasional food truck.
Water can be a bit rough at times, but in general itās a great beach with lots of room.
Be careful about walking barefoot as you move inland or Mauka the trees have thorns and the branches fall into the sand. Thorns are strong enough to pierce through cheap flip flops

The Big Beach is relaxing, clean, with super soft sand. This was the softest sand I have ever experienced. Just beautiful.

We met a local in a fishing store he worked at and he met us at this beach to teach us how to catch different species of fish in Hawaii. My bf had an amazing time and the beach was really beautiful! The waves were pretty big by the end of the morning and I bet itās a great place to surf!

It's very crowded and overrun with tourists. It has larger waves than on most Maui beaches but a dangerous shore break...be careful.

This beach was great! We got there early (before the crowds) and almost had the beach to ourselves. The waves were good, but got rough throughout the day! Excellent sand real estate!!

Best beach Iāve ever been to. Water was literally crystal clear. Shore break can be rough, so watch for lifeguard posted signs. Very small crowd, so plenty of room. Hike up the cinder cone if you can, and youāll see Little Beach.

Even if you are staying up in Ka'anapali, Big Beach is well worth the drive. Beautiful long and wide/deep beach. Lifeguards present but very spaced out along the beach. Heed the flags and never turn your back to the ocean, waves here mean business! If you are lucky like us, you will catch a surfer photo shoot! Parking can be a challenge and be prepared for port-a-potties instead of a running water washroom

Big Beach is vacation tradition for our family. We dedicate one day to a visit here.
It is only a short drive from the Shops at Wialea.
We go to ABC Stores and buy boogie boards for the children and beach chairs for us (which we later leave behind at the hotel) In addition, we stop at Island Gourmet Markets for great freshy sammies, gourmet wine and cheese. (I don't know if alcohol is allowed on the beach...but no one ever asked to see whats in my water bottle bahahaha) Sometimes there are food trucks there with some pretty yummy eats.
The beach is HUGE! The sand is PRISTINE! The views are EPIC!
This is such a romantic place at sunset. LOVE LOVE

Beautiful beach recommended in multiple books and sites, but be very careful of the undertow and shore break. The waves look small but the break is very powerful.

We were turned back because of a Shark sighting the day we went. So we had to go somewhere else and not get into the water.

Nice beach, was relatively quite when we were there. The waves are big and not safe for body surfing or boogie boarding. Thereās food trucks along the way to the beach that are delicious and they have life guards on duty.

Although parking can be hard to find, well worth the effort. Nice sandy beach, but watch the little ones as the waves can be large with strong under currents. Take umbrellas as there are few areas of shade. There are life guards. We had a sting ray swim by us as well as a sea turtle. There are portable restrooms near the entrances, but no changing areas.

An easy 5-star rating normally, but we visited in late Dec, and at the first (northern most) beach entrance parking lot, the 3-4 porta-potties were DISGUSTING (the horror... the horror...). Look, I'm a guy and I've been in lots of these so I'm not grossed out too easily, but these were truly awful. Here's hoping the company that is subcontracted to do this, actually does their job in future. I know December can be busy for people visiting Maui, but this point really spoils an otherwise incredible site. Anyhow, for those who have not visited here, don't let this deter you, the beach is phenomenal, though more so for boogie boarding, etc in winter, since the waves can get pretty high. Also note, the slope of the beach is greater than most others in South Maui, Also bring your binoculars if you have 'em, since the whale watching can be terrific during the winter months...

Be prepared to get sand in your suit!! It was so much fun, the beach is long and the waves were great! We walked quite a ways and checked out little beach that is up over the rocky hill hike. That was a site to see!

My wife and I went every morning! We would take a walk at our beach, go get a cup of coffee, drive 20 minutes and then setup at Big Beach for the morning.
The view is breath taking! The beach has life guards and is a wonderful place to read. They do warn you about a dangerous rip tide at this beach so I don't recommend swimming. Most of the injuries at beaches on this island have happened at this beach because of the waves and rip tides, so be careful.
We rented a beach umbrellas and chairs for the week and just relaxed!

This is a BIG beautiful beach! However, there can be a nasty break to the surf. This is a locals beach and you may not feel welcome.

Gorgeous beach, but watch out for the shore break!!! Life guards repeatedly warn about broken necks and backs. If you can time it and get out there is some amazing snorkelling out there!!!

It's size alone would make seem as if it were not crowded and like just about every Hawaiian beach, the views here great.

Big beach is amazing. Easy parking, beautiful beach, clear water, good snorkeling at both ends of the beach. The waves are inviting, but this is a shore break - as mentioned the locals call it breakneck beach for a reason. Now...if you want good body-surfing, take the trail over the rocks at the north end of the beach to Little Beach. This is a much better, bigger and safer break - on a "clothing-optional" beach. Don't be surprised, many of the locals exercise this option. We go around 7 am and have the beach and waves to ourselves for an hour and a half before the locals start showing up and showing off.

Though all of the beaches on Maui are awesome this one was our favorite. Simply beautiful and clean. I could sit and watch the surfers do their thing for hours.

If you are in the Kihei area, it is worth taking a drive south to see some of the interesting beaches in the area. We drove down Makena Alanui Road to get to Big Beach. We drove past the 2 parking lots for Big Beach and parked on the side of the road near the south end of the beach. We then walked through a path in the trees for a very short time to get to the beach. We wanted to go in on this end to see Secret Cove later. Big Beach lives up to it's name. The information I looked up on it stated that it was 100 feet wide and 2/3 of a mile long. It certainly looked to be true. I don't think that I have ever seen such a long beach. There were people sunning themselves and very few in the water. With the size of the beach, I can't imagine that it would ever get close to being crowded. The waves were too rough for us to swim that day, so we just waded in the water and enjoyed the very soft brown sand. There were lifeguards and some portable washrooms, but they were not clean. We saw some food trucks along the way, but didn't stop.
We walked to the south end of the beach and found Secret Cove. There was a wedding planner there with a couple when we arrived. Apparently it is a popular wedding spot. It was very pretty, with lava rocks all around and bougainvillea trailing down. There was a sandy cove, which would be where the weddings take place. This is a nice spot for photos.
Little Beach is north of Big Beach, but we didn't go there. Several people told us that it is a nudist beach and there are some odd characters that hang out there.

Went for a beach day from Lahaina, which is about an hour drive or less, very easy to find, this beach is at the Makena State Park. Big beach serves the name right, it's big! The sand is fine and white, ocean is calm-ish, it was a bit windy the day we went but I imagine when it's not the water must be super calm. My bf and a friend did some snorkel there and they saw a couple of turtles so you will most likely see them there so take some gear, he said one of the turtles was huge and there were lots of fish as well. There is also plenty of parking, a couple of food trucks and port-a-potties. Also, you must stay for the sunset! Aloha!

A very beautiful but busy beach. The sand is gorgeous and the waves amazing. It stands up to its name as being big.

Beautiful day at Big Beach and climb over the hill for a gander at Little Beach small rain shower in morning ended up with beautiful rainbow

Truly great views and pounding waves. Lifeguards on duty to watch, but you better watch yourself out there! A little walk from the parking area. Locals have this place covered! Huge cliffs...no climbing!

The views are incredible and the rocks and cliffs are inspiring. The surf is warm. The beach is moderately busy, so go enjoy some solitude.

This is one of our favorite Beach locations. You must respect the water with High tide so careful with little ones. But to wade out in the water it has a wonder sandy bottom

One of the larger sandy beaches on Maui. Great for a day of tanning or wading into the water to cool off. Parking wasnāt an issue as we parked on the side of the road that runs parrallel to the beach. Beach wasnāt overly crowded when we went. Next time weāll bring a beach umbrella and cooler. Warning: donāt turn your back on the waves. Some of them are quite large/powerful. Be safe. Daily news reports frequent tourist drownings in the waters here. We would definately return next time.

Together with the small (nudist beach) just next to it, these are the prettiest beaches in the Kihei/Makena area. We walked along the coastline in the forest and rocks. Very nice view on Molokini island.

This is an amazing beach - long, sandy, and wild! The waves match the stature of the beach, which makes it a super fun place to play in the waves. Facilities are rustic, but there are outhouses. As an added cultural "bonus", Little Beach is worth a side trip, simply for human interest.

Coming from Southern California where all the beaches are crowded, it was great to find a beautiful beach in Maui that was not crowded. I think this is due to the limited parking. We stayed in Maui for a week and came back to this beach 3 times. The waves can get aggressive but it was great to boogie board. Be careful, with the breeze, you may not feel your skin burn so remember to reapply lotion. The beach only has portable toilets, unlike some other beaches but I did not stop me from visiting.

My fiance were riding in the area and come upon this beautiful beach. We parked the car and walked over to what was almost an empty beach. There were maybe 10 other people at this beach during our visit. I'm not sure if we just happened to show up at a time when not many people are hanging out at this beach but we would definitely reture to this beach if looking for a quiet, not crowded beach. There was also plenty of parking. So that was a big plus. Beautiful beach and worth a stop.

A beautiful beach with a very wide sea shore. Lots of room to spread out and never felt crowded. There was a food truck in parking lot if you got hungry, but I'd pack a lunch in a cooler and take it to the beach instead. Port-a-Potties located beside parking lot. Water is beautiful, but be careful of the shore break! Lifeguards are on duty!

Definitely the most beautiful beach in Maui! Itās huge, you donāt need to sit on your neighborās towel, itās away from the massive hotels. The sand is powder like, so pure, the water is crystal clear⦠only the sun can hurt you!

After a morning trip to Haleakala crater, we decided to spend the afternoon at Big Beach, Makena. Our friends like this beach as they enjoy "bobbing" in the swells out beyond the surf. We parked at the second lot, somewhat crowded, and made the hike down to the beach and near an old tree. For a Tuesday afternoon, it wan't very crowded; perhaps one reason was the surf. It was a large and breaking strong. You had to time your entry and exit to get out beyond the breakers. The life guards were very alert for anyone with questionable swimming ability. One in our group was told that "if you can't swim, you shouldn't be out there". Well she could swim, the surf was just rough. The beach is long and wide, good for walking even in the soft sand. I'll go back the next time that I am in Maui.

The undertow and current is STRONG and has caused many neck/back injuries. This is not the beach for snorkeling or swimming. Perfect beach for walking, sand castles, and views. I think over the rocks is a nude beach as well.

We really enjoy Big Beach, it is not very busy and you can walk for miles and miles. It has gorgeous views and soft sand for beach strolls.

My husband and I traveled to Big Beach at the recommendation of others who had recently stayed in the AirBnB that we were staying in, and absolutely loved it. We went first thing in the morning, and felt as if we had the place to ourselves. There were *maybe* 50 other people spread out across the beach from end to end, which allowed us to have an incredibly quiet and tranquil experience. The snorkeling was fantastic - tons of fish and sea turtles! Absolutely beautiful and highly recommend. Bathroom situation is less than desirable, but that wouldn't stop me from visiting again!

Probably the nicest beach in our visit to Maui. Wide, sandy, clean, very relaxing, not crowded, good views. Backed by a nice lightly wooded area if you prefer access to shade while still being on the beach. We only had one day available but I could have gone there many times. There were primitive "facilities" (outhouses) back by the road.

the water is crystal clear blue (makes sense cmon now), waves in some areas crash 10 feet over you, but there is little danger of being pulled out to sea as they just keep coming. you can get quite a workout just fighting the waves. this is not for little kids and the lifeguards tell you that over the loudspeaker but dont interfere with your fun in any other way. also important is there are no rocks here, none. no danger of stepping on coral, or the dreaded rock bed 10 feet out, just a perfect beach for fun times and stunning views, as always in maui, all around

Big Beach has a lot of beach area, and not a lot of people. Be careful, the day we were there the surf was big, the waves were awesome! Not a place for kids (that day).

While staying in Kihei, we took a day to beach-hop. The directions to Makena area and Big Beach are not the clearest, but, wasn't too difficult to locate. The beach has a good amount of parking and portable "facilities". The walk to the beach from the parking lot is close and not hilly. The beach at Big Beach is amazingly beautiful. The water is so clear you can see your toes wriggle when you are neck deep in the water. only downside would be that it gets deep rather quickly so larger waves break at the shore - so getting in and out would not be good for little kids or anyone with ambulation issues. It was a perfect day at Big Beach - the climb over the hill to Little Beach is a bit to undertake.

ā¦..ALTHOUGH ANOTHER BEACH DOES.
BIG BEACH was my favourite on MAUI to the point where I visited 4 times over a 2 week period despite it having difficult access (for me personally). And judging by the crowds of locals and visitors even on non-weekend days itās also a lot of othersā favourite beach.
We are talking a long (1km/1100yards) and wide white/yellow sand strip bookended by low headlands and backed by nature ā no hotels or strip-malls behind this one. Such is the size that even on a nice Sunday when the northern carpark was pretty full (there are 3 car parks)) the sand did not appear crowded.
There is a bit of shade in back of the beach from trees but otherwise bring your umbrellas. The green-blue water appeared pretty clean.
BEWARE THE SURF ā all my visits saw fairly small surf. However this beach is known for bigger swell and the nature of the steep swash area means the shore-break is often mean. Iām a strong surf swimmer with 60 yearsā experience; thought I was pretty good at negotiating shore-break but even in the small conditions I got crunched. A review a few pages down mentions scary injury stats. Inexperienced people: TAKE CARE. And KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON YOUR KIDS. I reckon best bet is to park yourself in front of one of the 3 lifeguard towers which seem to be located adjacent each car-park (latter are sizable, have portable toilets and food trucks).
In the small conditions I noticed no dangerous rip currents but once the swell gets up they will be present: rips are natureās way of getting all that wave water back out to sea. Life guards are expert at warning rip locations.
A BONUS ā LITTLE BEACH ā making a visit more interesting is clothing-optional LITTLE BEACH a short, steep <5 minutes over the southern headland, particularly SUNDAY AFTERNOONS when the DRUM CIRCLE gets going. This is probably the islandās major SCENE ā and for the shy, the ratio of nudists to ātextilesā is 1:4 (3:1 at other times).
TRIPADVISOR has a special page on LITTLE BEACH with more details.
A BIT ISOLATED FOR PEOPLE WITHOUT A CAR ā BIG is at the southern end of the 9mile/14km long KIHIE-WAILEA-MAKENA beach strip in the islandās central-south. Unfortunately itās 5miles/8km from the nearest bus stop which is bad news for bottom budget travellers like me. I walked both ways once, walked/hitched two visits and got the bright idea of riding a rental bicycle the 22miles/36km from my NORTH SHORE (Wailuku) hostel one visit ā the most that can be said for that is it sure was good exercise.
However I donāt down-rate BIG BEACH on this: I figure most readers will have a car.
MY RATING: Only 4 stars for the best beach on the island? Well Iām a beach nerd ā got a website with over 3 million hits ā travelled many countries the past 30 years and seen thousands (no exaggeration) of beaches. So I reckon I can differentiate EXCELLENT from VERY GOOD from AVERAGE. And MAUIāS average beach is pretty nice (and thereās heaps of them) so it takes something special to be lifted one class (4 STARS). It takes something WORLD CLASS to get 5 stars ā BIG BEACH doesnāt make it: itās not to the standard of the WORLD'S BEST beaches Iāve seen. But itās at the very top of the half dozen or so MAUI beaches I rate 4 stars ā maybe 4.9.
CONFUSION REIGNS! So how come I give another MAUI beach (RED BEACH at HANA ā see TRIPADVISORāS separate page) 5 stars? Because it has A WORLD CLASS GORGEOUS SETTING. But itās not my personal favourite on account itās isolated - I could only manage one visit.
TIPS
- In the unlikely case of all 3 parking lots being full thereās plenty of parking on the main road. This has more FOOD TRUCKS, which seem popular.
- If you make a long trip from elsewhere on the island, research other attractions along the KIHIE-WAILEA-MAKENA strip. I particularly liked the WAILEA BEACH WALK.
- Bus 10 (hourly) from KAHULUIāS bus exchange will get budget travellers closest. $2 ā correct money, no change given. If you are doing other bus trips the same day get a $4 DAILY PASS.
- Buses have a free bike rack ā I used it to beat the horrific headwinds for 20km of my return trip.
- Non-car tragics will find KIHIE has several bicycle-hire joints.
- BUDGET TRAVELLERS might take advantage of the north shoreās BANANA and ALOHA SURFāS free Sunday guest excursions which include several hours on BIG BEACH.
- TRIP ADVISOR has another page on this beach with more reports/pix ā search āMAKENA BEACHā, its official name.

Located in an area of less rainfall, this is a good beach if Lahaina weather is poor. Parking is paved, free, and has a food truck from about 10:30 on. Port a potties are cleaned daily. The lot is closed after sunset, so be careful not to get locked in. Waves are often dangerous; care is required. Views are great and whales are often sighted, according to the season. Be careful around the trees as the giant thorns can penetrate flip flops.

THis beach was awesome! Great fun body surfing but yes, you need to pay attention. The sand is beautiful. We just wish we would have found this beach sooner then our second to last day. A must try when coming to Maui.

Strange to be welcomed to a beach by a lifeguard on a bullhorn telling you the many reasons why you shouldn't go in the water. He went on and on about they have a heavy short break and out how it has broken backs, necks, and carried children out. Beach is gorgeous and huge, great place for sunning . Not ment for little ones in the water.

We have been to this beach several times and never with incident the last time was however different very strong riptides close to shore making it dangerous when the lifeguard came on speaker advising necks, backs could be broken and could be swept out in ocean but then said numerous times its only the visitors this happens to never the locals Hawaii major source of revenue is tourism while I appreciate the warnings lifeguard even said donāt know how you all missed all the signs posted it is abundantly clear āvisitorsā are not welcome here or maybe just by that particular lifeguard. Most people could tell just by looking at the waves crashing that it wasnāt a safe day and there werenāt many in the ocean I do understand and welcome the warnings even repeatedly just not the tone of them. I will return to Hawaii just not this beach likely.

Great place to spend the day and bodysurf the waves. Incredibly strong break and current. Be prepared to take some sand home in your bathing suit.

Big beach has big waves! It is paid parking for out of state residents. The cost was $30 for the four of us. There are porta potties near the parking lot. No lifeguard on duty. No restroom facilities or shelter available. There is little shade here. Most of it was occupied by the time we arrived. We stayed about three hours. Bring plenty of sun screen! You will have a nice view of Molokini and Kahoolawe from Big Beach. It is a lovely beach.

We were the same day as the review below us. We have been to this beach several times but never ventured out further than getting our legs wet. The waves are brutal but beautiful. We typically view big beach then head over to Little Beach for adult fun.

You ever see those preloaded computer screen savers that pop up after a period of inactivity? Well, you might see this beach on one of those! Now, I'm not positive that it is, but it easily could be. This is the most beautiful beach I've ever been to. You might have been to some better ones, but you won't be able to argue that this beach and its views are breathtaking. Golden sand and crystal light and dark blue water that paints in to view the Molokini Crater & Kaho'olawe island. You can walk along this beach to a cliff that separates Big Beach & Little Beach. Be careful though because 1. It's a pretty tough trek up and the sand is hot 2. Little Beach has a lot of nude people. Don't worry though, you have to walk down a little path to actually see people, but just be careful. Also, the water is rough so I wouldn't recommend standing too close while walking the beach because it can easily take you out.

Fantastic beach with life guards. Beautiful fine white sand over looking Molokai and molokini crater. Lots of space even with big crowds. Pretty strong surf; great place to boogie board. There couple of food trucks just at the entrance serving delicious fish tacos amongst others. There are also port o potties as well. All in all a great place to spend the day in or out of the water.

Beautiful sandy beach that is very deep and long! Plenty of space for the kids to play, and even to play beach volleyball or throw a frisbee. Not much shade, so bring beach chairs, a beach umbrella, sun hat, and sunscreen. Also, bring your own food, snacks, and drinks as there isnāt anywhere to purchase these items except a food truck. In fact, avoid getting food from Jawz food truck, you will be disappointed.

And not only the beach, also the waves are huge - at least when we were there. The courageous few did surf, the rest of us tried to catch the humpbacks breaching off shore.

Great wide, white beach near to Wailea...less crowded easy access. Be careful of the strong undertow. NICE WAVES

This beach is beautiful! The sand is nice, golden, and fine. The beach is very big so you can easily find a spot to yourself. There aren't really any hotels close by so it's not very crowded either. The waves looked a lot smaller here that at the West side beaches we had gone to before that so we went swimming. There were still some 10 foot waves every now and then that crashed into us and knocked us down though. I thought this beach was the definition of paradise.

Nice beach with great sand, not rocky at all and very swimmable. Plenty of people but pretty well spread out. Awesome little fish taco food truck in the parking lot which also carries water!

Big Beach is as 3,000 ft long stretch of soft and near water pounded sand with shade trees back of the hundred foot wide sand beach. Great place to swim, snorkel and boogie board. The breakers can get high with undertow at certain times. There is less traffic here at Makena State Park and a trail to the secluded clothing optional Little Beach. The views are unreal here of the islands, mountains and seas in this dry, rain shadow side of Maui. Highly recommend this great , quiet beach in a no-resort more rural setting.

Beware! This is a beautiful beach but the waves and brake wall can be very dangerous . The lifeguard will announce the dangers and say more people brake necks and bones here than any other beach in Hawaii. We were there yesterday and my husband and I got caught in the surf. Very scary to be tossed like a rag doll and smashed into the sand. The undertow is so strong itās very hard to get out, it took us 3 smashing breaks before we could get back to land. thankfully not broken bones. Do NOT take your kids here. The life guards are great but they have a very hard job at a very lovely but dangerous place

This area is accessed by going south on the main road in Wailea. There is no loop, just one road in and out. If you enjoy exploring the island, this is a great drive. The beach is indeed big and rough as described by others. We walked along the beach but left the waves to the locals. Great opportunity to enjoy a local spot far removed from the big resorts. Don't go back yet. Visit the beach then drive on to the end of the road which goes through an old lava field. It was fascinating, remote and isolated. There is a spot to turn around after a few miles driving through the lava field.

During the day we spent at Big Beach it rained off and on (no fault of the beach of course) and the surf was pretty crazy, so we didn't end up going in the water. That said, the beach was beautiful. What I really liked was that it was so expansive and other than the life guard towers there is not a building in site. Although there are a couple of parking lots and a fair bit of parking this beach is popular so try and arrive in the morning. Really, this is good advice to follow if you are travelling to any popular beach in Hawaii.

Went to Big Beach today; used the 2nd entrance, which is shorter walk to the sand and less people. Watched some Big Beach rookies in their 20s go head-long into the surf break on boogie boards and quickly get pounded. One came up holding a shoulder, the other was scratched from being tumbled onto the rough-sand beach. Neither re-entered. The lifeguard at the north end, where more tourists were in the water, used his loudspeaker to warn people to stay out of the surf unless they knew what they were doing and even then to be careful. He listed the type of injuries that are common here, from neck compressions to broken bones. "Don't be the unfortunate one today," he says, and it's true. If you've got little kids, go to one of the Kam park beaches in Kihei. Big Beach is a great place to soak the sun and watch locals who know how to handle their boogies and skimmers, and for alert people who can read the water and get in and past the surf break for a dip, and back out without getting flipped.

Down in the edge of the island near Wailea youāll find Big Beach.
Somewhat hidden off the road but worth the trip.
Beautiful sandy beach.
The biggest waves on the island

Big Beach is part of the Makena State Park.
PARKING:
There are two parking lots because the beach is that long. Gates close at 7pm though not necessarily on the dot.
THE BEACH:
The sand is soft and white, with lots of square footage so it never feels crowded. The waves are generally big which is great for body/boogie boarding but not for anything else. If you haven't gotten slammed by a wave here, you've never experienced Big Beach lol! It's fun to watch the bodyboarders do tricks and catch waves. There are lifeguards on duty now, thankfully. Shade on the sand is non-existent though there are a few tables under the thorny kiawe trees but it's a bit far from the water.
TIPS:
The only restroom facilities are the port-a-potties near the parking lot.
There are no showers or BBQ grills.
There is a taco truck serving out of the north parking lot but I haven't tried them yet.
OVERALL:
Great for boogie/bodyboarding and people-watching.

I am not a chill on the beach kind of guy, but this is the one beach I will relax at.
Its big and wide with beautiful sand, waves that crash right on the beach and views that are the reason people travel from all over the world to see Maui!!

This beach is almost at the south end of the island and as a result there are less people. Beautiful Crescent shaped beach. The sand is fine and multi-colored. The sand is a bit of pink and white. If you walk to the southern end of the beach and walk through the little sand path among all those lava rocks, you will reach the little hidden beach. Not to mistaken with the little beach which is at the north end. Now if you want a bit more adventure, you could then climb through those lava rock on the south end to reach the Secret Beach or Makena Cove. If you want a beach almost by yourself, this is a place to go. This is also a popular place for wedding pictures. Those lava rocks are sharp. I was able to manage the path without a scratch. However, worth the risk :)

If you have limited days to explore beaches, do this one first. Beautiful, uncrowded, just awesome. Next time I come to Maui, I will stay close to this beach.

Wonderful beach, golden Santa, blue and transparent water. Ideal for a family day. Be sure to bring food and drinks for the whole day.

I like how the beach is so big that you can always find a spot to lay out. The stretch of beach is a quarter mile or more. Just beware of the big waves that crash here. They took me for a tumble a few times, so it might not be an ideal place on some days to float or snorkel.
Still on most days it's picture perfect and worth a visit if staying in southern Maui.
Parking wasn't too bad and there's food trucks scattered around the area so bring cash.

Perfect beach setting. It's a short and easy ride from the resort area in Wailea. We especially liked this beach because it had a more natural feel than the resort beaches. The views are stunning and you don't really see anything manmade from the beach. While there are a decent amount of people at the beach, it's by no means overcrowded -- just don't expect your own private beach. The surf can be a little rough, as the lifeguard will warn, so be careful with kids and/or inexperienced swimmers. We found parking here to be pretty easy, and it's free. They had a food truck in the parking lot, although we didn't try it.

I gave it a very good because I take pictures and this is an amazing beach for wave pictures. This was a 6th time to big beach, but first time staying for the morning and getting in the water. There is a reason they call this āBack Breaker Beachā. It is not safe to boogie board, wave jump or anything with small children. My husband took my 15 year old out past the shore break and made sure she got in safely. I wouldnāt have let her the water otherwise and she is a great swimmer. It is not a swimming beach. The waves are nice to watch, but the shore break can cause serious injury.

Great big beach good sand, water a little rough with under tow. Beautiful place to see the sunset into the ocean, not on a neighboring island.

We drove out specifically to spend time at the beach. The beach itself is absolutely beautiful, but the wind really rolled the ocean to the point it's tricky on and off the beach into the water. That being said, lots of fun to be had in the surf if that's your thing - boogie boards welcome! However, scant things to see snorkeling on the day we were there. The sand reaches so far off shore that you really have to go far out to see anything, and even then it's pretty sparse.

Great beach on the island . wave are a little big for little ones . sand is very nice . great place to spend the day at .

Beautiful long deep soft sand beach. At least two big parking lots, colorful waters and waves. LOTS of room on beach for masses and still feel space. Wonderful walKing beach wherever you are staying. We parked at second lot, it was emptier and beach less crowded.

This was our favorite beach on Maui. The water is warm and beautiful. We had so much fun boogie boarding in the big waves all day! Sand was soft and clean. It was also nice that they had life guards on site.

My family of five loved Big Beach (all adults). The expanse was perfect and less crowded than other beaches. We stopped at Leoda's to bring sandwiches and banana cream pie for a great lunch on the beach. Be aware that the waves do act up and the undertow can be strong so be careful.

My husband and I visited Big Beach shortly after sunrise since we couldn't get to Haleakala, and were so pleasantly surprised by what we found! It was almost empty and SO beautiful! The sand is so soft, the water is so blue, and the lava rocks on the sides of the beach add a nice Hawaiian touch as well. :) We went twice and didn't pay for parking either time, so I'm not sure what we did differently from the other folks who went here? Regardless, it was probably our favorite beach we visited in Hawaii. Even saw some turtles the second day we came.

Beautiful beach but beware if the waves. They can get extremely high and overtake you. The beach itself is clean and the bathrooms for being portable were being cleaned out while we were there.

My husband and I have been coming to Maui since 2008 - we visit Big Beach every time. YES, the signage saying the shore break and rip tide is dangerous are TRUE. You must respect the ocean, your level of comfortability with swimming/treading water, AND timing getting in and out. This beach is NOT ideal for body surfing or boogie boarding!!! We have witnessed many people seriously injuring themselves here. We do go in the water every time we are there, however it is short lived, and we are VERY cautious the entire time. There are plenty of beaches on Maui that allow for all these activities without as much danger. This is a lovely beach, but definitely one you must appreciate from a distance (if you are not absolutely confident in the ocean)

This was our favorite beach of the ones we visited. Beautiful long stretch of sand. But be warned the shore break here is no joke. It crashes hard and big! If you get 15 or 20 feet offshore it's fun to ride the waves but I'd you hang out at the shore you will get punished. Heard lots of stories of broken backs and necks and I totally believe it.

This is a nice sandy beach that is easy to get to. Plenty of parking and a few trees for shade. When we were there was a large shore break. A lifeguard is on duty on this long beach. We actually got rained on and then headed south beyond the Ahihi-Kinau volcano flow and got out of the showers.

Me and my daughter went swimming here. Once you get out past the breaks its not too bad. But getting out there and back can be a problem. I got slammed twice getting too close to the shallow and hit the bottom once. Afterwards I get out and I find out that people has had severe spinal chord injuries. So be warned of the dangers here.

Donāt go in the water!! You could break your knee, shoulder, neck ect or even worse!! You vacation can end and fly home early with 35k surgery within 7 days after entering!! Talk to life guards, beautiful beach but not worth broken bones. Maui Hospital says the beach keeps them busy⦠so sad.
The life guards are friendly, and helpful. We spent hours there just enjoying the BIG BEACH!! šŗš š Great sands and lots of huge places to hang out in. We totally enjoyed this place! š¾āļøš lots of gorgeous views and happy families! Big Beach gets our vote!
