Excellent Hike So Close to D.C.

By Kent H |

This is one of my favorite hikes in the Washington, D.C. area. It crazy rocky. Up and down over big rocks. Can't use hiking poles because you need your hands to grab the rocks as you climb about like a Billy Goat. I parked across from Old Angler's Inn and got on the Part A of the trail as it is the most exciting and challenging. After the hike, the beer garden at the Inn is a delightful way to end the day.

Best Hike on the East Coast.

The Billy Goat Trail is along the Maryland side of the Potomac River in the Cand O National Park, Great Falls MD, just outside the beltway. We usually park in the park (take MacArthur Blvd to the very end), pay the $5 and then you get bathrooms, easy parking and if you are lucky the grill is open.

There are 3 sections of the Billy Goat trail, all are well marked and begin and end on the canal trail. Section A is the best and hardest. It is a HIT with kids & cub scouts as young as 5 years old, scrambling over huge rocks, walking along cliffs, beaches, mud - it great entertainment. The kids I take have thought it looks like Middle Earth or New Zealand. They always want to come back. Dogs are not allowed on section A. It takes 2 1/2 hours to do the Section A loop from the parking lot and back. Bring a bottle of water and a small snack, you'll want to rest along the way at least twice. In the summer, when it is hot, bring lots of water! I always leave a cooler of sandwiches and water at the car for a treat when we finally make it back to the car. If I don't have food, you can purchase food and water at the grill, but it seems more closed than open.

This is a great Monday afternoon activity when the schools get out early, or when you just need to keep the kids occupied for an afternoon. Easy access to DC and suburbs. You are a hit with the kids (or your date) when you do this. Two hours of hard exercise followed bt easy walking and water and food. Back home in time for dinner or a nap.

There are usually hundreds of other hikers on the trail. I once saw a Vietnamses dad in flip flops carry his young sleeping infant, and he was still smiling when we passed him going the other way on the canal trail 2 hours later - and the kid was still asleep. I have done it in Tevas a few times, sneakers are good, hiking boots are probably safer. If the dads or kids get worn out or cranky, there is an trail marked "emergency exit" that takes an hour off the time.

Section B and C are much more tame. The National Park Service has the maps and literature on line, Wikipedia has a small blurb also. Just go and have a great time!

What could be better?

This is another great spot next to the Potomac River and the C&O Canal. While not a long walk, it does require navigating rocky trails. The only downside of this spot is that so many others have discovered it; hence it easily gets too crowded. Particularly on weekends and especially when the weather is perfect. Our suggestion is that you think of the Billy Goat trail when you want to hike on a cold or rainy day -- because the area will still be great.

Close-in wilderness

By Fred P |

I have done this hike, with and without kids, about a dozen times and it's been amazing every time. It gets a little crowded on good weather weekends, but it's hard to imagine more beautiful scenery (and a fairly challenging hike) only a couple miles upriver from downtown DC.

Fabulous place close to DC for a rigorous hike

By krista k |

This is one of our favorite hikes in the DC area. You need to have sturdy shoes and be able to climb over large rocks if you want to hike the whole trail. The trail travels alongside the river and there are lots of places to stop and take in the river scene. Often you can see kayakers on the river.

Great hiking with scenic views along the Potomac

By Maureen G |

Several sections of this wonderful trail to choose from, readily accessible from the C&O towpath. I usually park across from the Old Angler's Inn, head toward Great Falls Park (MD) along a very scenic section of the towpath, and access the Billy Goat Trail at the "covered bridge" and hike back on the challenging terrain back to my starting point -- a comfortable 2+ hours' outing. Sturdy shoes a must for the rocky, uneven "path" - which is often a scramble over boulders, including one very steep incline (or descent, depending on where you started out) with footholds along a crevice between the rocks. Not for those with vertigo or serious joint issues....Great for families with kids who can hold their own on steep terrain for a couple hours, hikers who like variety and views, and the occasional dog with long legs (leave your dachshunds at home.) Take a picnic, and of course, water - there are stretches along rocks in the open sun.

Section A

By SB1123 |

My wife, sister and brother-in-law (ages 57, 55, 55 and 48) loved this trail. If you're fit, sure of foot, and not afraid of heights, this is a great challenge that rewards you with some wonderful views of a beautiful part of the Potomac River. Others have talked about all the wildlife they saw, but I expect that must be more in the early morning and late afternoon, not in the mid-day heat when we went.

Beware that this hike involves some climbing and clambering that are not for the faint of heart, but it's all doable if you take your time. We saw quite a few people along the way who did not look well prepared, many of whom looked a bit overwhelmed by the tasks in front of them; more than a few turned back.

I strongly recommend that you do not try to do Section A in anything other than hiking shoes or sneakers with a good grip; that you not bring your dog and expect they'll be able to negotiate it all on their own; and that you not bring small children unless you're very certain of their ability to do some very difficult rock climbing. As other reviewers have said, people get seriously injured here frequently, and there are a few deaths every year. There are other very nice hikes in the park you can do without the danger.

By the way, we arrived at around 3:30 on a Sunday afternoon and found that there was no issue with parking. Section A of the Billy Goat Trail was pretty crowded, though. Bathrooms are much nicer than in many parks.

Don't neglect to take the relatively short walk to the falls overlook before or after your hike (easily accessible for those in your group with mobility issues). It is gorgeous!

A must do

By Derek S |

Fabulous place for the views and to get a workout. Through the woods, along the river, on top of the boulders. Bring a picnic if you like and set up on top of a cliff. Really special.

Wonderful walking, biking & hiking trails

By Lauren B |

Absolutely loved visiting Great Falls Park in October. The colors were amazing and while a lot of people were out on the trails, it wasn't horribly crowded. There are flat trails for walkers and bikers but are also more challenging trails for hikers. It's a great place to get some fresh air and beautiful views close to D.C.

Not Just Your Everyday Hike

By Fitness_Guru_8 |

I hike the Billy Goat Trail every year to make sure that I can accomplish it. I'm 60 years old. Wearing hiking boots are very helpful. Lots of rocks and roots that can twist your ankle. I carry one stick for balance and just in case I trip. The trail has places that require u to climb rocks. There are many scenic spots and places to sit and have a snack and drink will sitting on the rocks. If you get too tired there is a 1/2 way point that you can leave the trail and return to the tow path.
Have fun

Awesome hike

By Brandy J |

We did the Billy Goat Trail A on a Monday- my kids were off school for a teacher workday. The trail was uncrowded and we only saw a few people. My kids loved it! The 6 year old had no problem scaling rocks and climbing trees. My 11 and 12 year olds declared it the best hike ever. I'm definitely sore and got a great workout. The wall that you climb is pretty easy. There were other places in the trail that were more challenging. Pretty sure any other hike will disappoint. We did trail c in late June. It was more preschool age friendly. Some rock climbing but nothing compared to A!

Good hiking trail just north west of Washingtion DC.

By cameo S |

Having grown up in this area, the Billy Goat trail is a local favorite. Split into three sections off of the C&O canal, section C of the trail offers some of the best views of the river. Not a difficult hike, but not rated for families with young children because of the close proximity of the raging river and the danger of veering off of the trail onto wet slippery rocks. Section C, is a 1.7 mile loop off of the C&O canal.

Good for responsible young adults and older.

Favorite challenge

By mgrb2014 |

My family loves the Billy Goat Trail. My teenage children like Trail A which is the most challenging. I enjoy them all and the views are breathtaking. You feel like you are on a vacation when it is only 15 minutes or so from home. Great hiking and a great place to walk dogs.

Awesome views of the river gorge and canal and nice work out at the same time

By CodyDC |

The A trail is 1.7 miles, but seems longer when you get to the rocky portion of the trail. The hike along the river has great views of the river gorge and with it being late autumn the foliage was minimal to provide unobstructed views of the river. I would recommend the trail during the work week as the weekends can become crowded on the trail. The trails are marked with blue markers so you cannot get lost. The backside of the trail is on the canal tow path which becomes a nice relaxing hike back to your car.

Great Trail

By Lincoln117 |

It's a great trail and at one place quite a challenge. Bring water especially in the summer. Great view of the Potomac.

Great trail for any level of hiker

By Susanj453 |

I have walked only parts of the Billy Goat Trail, but the sections I have hiked are very scenic. The views of the Potomac River are fabulous. The trail is very accessible and has many options--half day hike, a couple of hours, or a comfortable 1-hour walk. I am lucky to live close to the trail so I walk it often.

Beautiful views...fairly tough hike be prepared if you go

By viaggiareconpoco |

This trail is accessed via the C& O trail & leads up & down quite difficult terrain. I wouldn't personally hike this trail without boots, a map, bug spray, water & a snack. IF you hike a lot this is not tough but for someone who is unfamiliar with rocks, ledges, hiking through brush along the way then I would recommend sticking to the C&O trail along the canal. You do get some spectacular views along the way but beware anything that has ROCKS & Water is slippery & dangerous....

Go in the morning for some excellent scenery!

By Joey Mõ Mõ |

I've lived in the area for the better part of 30 years and have seemingly always overlooked the trails around Cabin John. On the recommendation of others, my wife and I tried the Billy Goat Trail (sections A & B) this past weekend and LOVED it. To put this review in perspective: My wife and I are enthusiastic day-hikers & campers, but have not done backpacking or trekking.

The Billy Goat Trail consists of 3 sections all under 2 miles (each) in length on the Maryland side of the Potomac River. Easy parking is to be had at Great Falls Tavern Visitor's Center (Not Free) or across from the Angler's Inn (Free). Section A starts near the tavern and is the most frequented trail. We found it full of rock hopping and excellent scenery, and at 0800-- full of really friendly trail-goers. There are several sections of worn slippery rock and lots of area begging to twist an ankle. Those hiking this trail should genuinely consider wearing boots or well-laced sturdy shoes. Section B is leaves a majority of the rocks and views of the Potomac behind in favor of wooded trail and wildlife. Not much excitement on B, but still a nice hike. Section C we didn't hike this go round, so I can't comment on that :)

On the recommendation of others, we started our hike early. Lots of good views as the sun comes up as well as beating the crowd. By the time we finished our circuit (11:30), the parking lot was full as was the trail. Get there before 8:00 for some alone time with mother nature.

The bottom line: GREAT 1/2 day hike. Lots of other trails to connect and expand on your plans. If you are accustomed to Shenandoah, this hike will be a bit tame but still worth it for the view. This is a definite "do-again" for us. Oh, and be mindful of your footing. Some poor lady fell and dislocated her knee five minutes into her hike... yikes!

Perfect time of year for Billy Goat trail

By Tom L |

Blue blaze trail markers are set often, generally easy to see, but many parts of the hike will be very slow rock / boulder fields. I loved this, but it may not be for everyone. Great views of the Potomac, plus short walk on the C & O trail to see Great Falls.

Best hike in the DC Area

By TravelingGuy4400 |

The Billy Goat Trail is definitely one of the best hikes in the DC area; its a challenging hike, so come prepared with water, athletic gear, and be ready to climb/scramble. Parking can be challenging on crowded days.

It's a challenge

By Charles M |

This is not your ordinary city or suburban hike. Although only a few miles from DC, this is a strenuous journey. Allow a few hours, even if you are an expert rock climber. After all, there will be traffic jams at some spots. Gorgeous views.

Adventurer thrill!

By AVV |

loved this trail! There were three routes and we took the hardest one. Unfortunately no dogs are allowed but it is so intense and you have to use your hands to climb so much I wouldn't have wanted to bring my dog along. So cool and full of adventure I believe it's the most adventurous one to take so you feel like you're literally scaling up the side of the mountain, hills!

lots of scenic views, the only downside was you're not allowed to get in the water. And we went on a super hot day so it was like 90 degrees!

Great hike even during a thunderstorm

By CCC_wanderlust |

I've hiked all three sections of the Billy Goat Trail numerous times, with groups of friends and with my teenage nephews.

Paid parking is available at the Visitor's Center. Free parking is available on the side of the road, by Old Angler's Inn. Park at your own (towing) risk at Old Angler's Inn.

If hiking section A, be prepared for a bit of rock scrambling, especially up a cliff face along Mather Gorge. During peak season, this section of the trail can get backlogged with people going up and coming down.

Hike section B or C if you want a less strenous activity.

I've hiked section C during a thunderstorm. The only thing I wish I had with me was a plastic cover for my backpack, where my camera was. Otherwise, there was something peaceful and zen about hiking in the pouring rain.

Wildlife seen in the area include turtles, Canadian geese, and a garden snake sunning on the rocks.

I highly recommend the Billy Goat Trail.

Almost technical and fun rocky trail along the Potomac

By Lyman777 |

The Billy Goat Trail is a local favorite for adventure seekers looking for a fine trail alongside the Potomac River below Great Falls. It is in the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park near Potomac, MD. It is rocky most of the way. There are some tricky spots on the trail that require a little use of your hands.

The full trail consists of 3 sections, which total 8 miles. Section A has the technical parts. Section B is rated "strenuous". C is easy. I am amazed every time I trek it when I see folks with street shoes out on the steep rocky parts. Running shoes are just barely OK if you are fit. Otherwise, hiking boots are the way to go. There are some fine views of the river in the little canyon alongside Section A.

NPS has a good page that I recommend you view before attempting any part of the trail. Have fun!

Fun Hiking Trail..... just be ready to be like a goat.....

By Phil F |

Great hiking trail that is located along the Potomac River on the Maryland side. It is a great work out but be careful because portions of it can be dangerous and/or hazardous. Enjoy!

By Becky M |

We chose this part of the trail because we had our dog with us. Pleasant easy trail with great views. Kids could have been more challenged but the dog couldn't have done the A trail. A few rock scramble opportunities.

Good hike to begin a weekend

By ShahPriyanka00 |

Lovely hike, moderate level.
Great serene views of mountains and water, you can find people kayaking and canoeing at a distance.
You climb the mountain, pass through narrow routes, cross the water, hang onto the tree branches etc. Its a fun experience for both adults and kids.

Take some food and relax on the flat stone mountains if you like a leisure hike. Good to go with a group or alone.

Incredible hike less than 15 miles from the White House

By chipsbird |

How can we have such beautiful natural and wild beauty so close to urban Washington, DC? We are so very lucky. I have hiked the Billy Goat Trail (parts A, B and C) many, many times and it always is different. Part A is the most challenging but has the most spectacular views overlooking the Potomac River and Great Falls of the Potomac. There are numerous rocky overlooks where you can look down on kayakers and over to the Virginia side of the Potomac. Be prepared for a challenge, take your time, stop for a picnic and to take photos. Please wear proper footwear when hiking the BGT! The other sections also provide great hikes but Part A is the one I do over and over again. You can access the trails by parking across from Old Anglers' Inn on MacArthur Blvd. and walking west on the towpath to the trail entrance. To get to Parts A and B you would walk east on the towpath. Or you can pay to enter Great Falls Park (national park entrance fee) and walk east on the towpath to the trail entrance to Part A. Don't forget to walk out to the scenic overlook of the falls which is near the Old Tavern that is the history center of the park. It is amazing to see the whitewater sweep under the little bridges and then be up close to the falls at the overlook. I took my mother out to the overlook when she was in her 80s so anyone can take that walk. But, only go on the BGT if you have some hiking experience.

Great Hike, Great Views but with some Challenging Sections!

By OhJackieO |

On a gorgeous Sunday morning - the first this winter - 14 of us set out to conquer the Billy Goat Trail. We were a mixture of adults (ages mid 40's to early 50's), a few teenagers and five 10 year olds!! We went into the park entrance, paying $5 per car. We waited in line to enter the park for about 5-7 minutes at 10:45am. When we left at 2pm, there were 100 cars - YES! 100 cars waiting to enter the park, so arriving early is wise!

There is a small museum, water fountains, and nice bathroom facilities. You can get up close and personal to the locks and there is a replica boat to look at.

Make sure you take the path to see the falls. It's exhilarating and you can feel the power of the water rushing. Don't forget your camera as this is just the first of many gorgeous locations for photos. Onto the start of the actual Billy Goat Trail.

The trail starts off easy walking on paths through woods. It was peaceful even though there were lots of other folks around. It doesn't take too long before the terrain gets more challenging and you find yourself on top of rocks, near to the edge with the River flowing fast down below. It's a bit dizzying, really, so if you're not fond of heights, you may want to find a path further from the water's edge. I was nervous and yet eager to keep going. My husband and my son helped me with some difficult parts and I sat down at other times. There comes a point when the path takes you up a cliff and it almost looks like rock climbing. Everyone was able to do this part although the 3 women chose not to attempt it and took another way around. (I'm going to try it next time though!) Everyone enjoyed this section of the trail but I think it's a bit extreme for the average person. Shortly after the "cliff", you have the option to cut back to the tow path or go another .75 of a mile over some moderate terrain. We chose to cut to the tow path as we were getting hungry. The walk along the path is lovely and we saw a crane catch a fish and try to eat it, but alas, the fish got away!

Most in our party are not in great shape although the kids are! I'm not sure how to caution others because we all did it and had a great time. We were challenged at times and very nervous at others but the overall experience was fantastic. It was a really fun way to spend time with the kids, exercise and get some fresh air. I think you can stick to the tow path for an easier walk in a lovely setting.

Tip: Bring lots of water and a snack and remember to sunscreen. Also, you may want to plan time in your schedule to have lunch or brunch at the Old Anglers Inn!

Kick butt trail in Potomac, MD

By Alm16advisor |

Billy Goat trail offers you a great way to spend an afternoon hiking on its challenging course. You definitely need good hiking shoes as the rocks tend to get slippery. The trails have large boulders, jagged rocks and narrow passages so you're ankles get a work out moving 180 degrees just to keep you from slipping. BGT will wear you out if you're not at least a novice hiker. We saw unprepared teenagers, older couples and less daring people turn around within the first 30 minutes of the trail. If you can overcome your fear factor its really a great time and excellent exercise. The views of the Potomac are amazing and the attached pics tell it all. No need to keep writing just enjoy the pics along the hike. P.S. There is a parking fee since the BGT is part of Great Falls National park so they charge $5 per person in each car. The parking lot is huge, they also have a small outdoor restaurant and public restrooms. They have a ferry boat that takes visitors to eat at one of the nearby restaurants. Not sure of the cost but you can google it. Overall it was a great afternoon on a cool sunny pre-fall day.

Challenging hike - but so worth it!

By aapenney |

We hiked Trail A, the most challenging trail. We are not regular hikers or climbers but we are in decent shape. It was a great hike, the perfect blend of challenge and reward, the challenge being climbing some of the rocky areas, the reward being the beautiful views.
There were plenty of other people on the trail, but it never felt too crowded, and everyone was very nice, considerate of others and helpful.
I would recommend this hike for anyone looking to push themselves a bit.

Totally Surprised! In a good way.

By arflynn23 |

Who would have expected such a rugged hike could be so close to DC proper. Not only is this a hike, it's almost bouldering. What a neat way to get out and get some exercise. But fair warning. Small children would need to be watched pretty closely as this hike could be dangerous!

Rugged adventure that's easy.

By William F |

Very easy access, part of the Potomac Gorge, close to DC but one of our country's great natural wonders. The really rugged part is short, but sufficiently adventurous to satisfy any hiker, and so easy to get to any average walker can enjoy it. Just wear good shoes and take it easy.

Billy Goat Trail, Great Falls Md

By Karin O |

Several years ago my husband and I hiked 2 trails at Great Falls. The Billy Goat Trail, Trail A is a bit challenging, due to the areas that have numerous rocks to climb over. One spot in the trail had a 50 ft cliff. We were able to climb it with a bit of assistance from each other, though we had no special gear. I would not recommend this trail if you are not fit. There are also easier, flat trails and lovely views of the Potomac and rapids. We spotted a heron, turtle, and Canadian geese with babies. There were other visitors climbing on cliffs with gear. Overall, an interesting and lovely area to hike. I've included some photos to give newcomers an idea of what to expect.

Absolutely amazing views and quite a workout!

By Brian |

This hike is not for everyone - it's quite rugged and, if you go on weekends when throngs of not-so-skilled hikers show up, it can be a bit dangerous. Try to go early, arriving by 8 a.m., to avoid crowds, and you will have an amazing time! This strenuous hike is only about four miles, but half of it has you traipsing along boulders and gawking at spectacular views of the Potomac Gorge, so give yourself at least three hours to take it all in. Also, if you do go during a crowded weekend, make sure you watch out for cyclists along the two miles of trail that runs along the C&O Canal tow path. I was there in August and got run over by a biker who refused to slow down to pass hikers returning from their exhausting stint along the rocks. My tip - bring plenty of water and trail snacks!

one of the best, however not for faint heart folks

By Shashikant B |

Being in Maryland we started now regularly (After 20+ years staying here 😡😡) to go for this trail. You should go early morning, before 8:00 AM to get good “free” parking spot and also less crowd.
The trail can be started from either end. Typically we walk far side of the trail and enter from that end and come back to entrance closer to parking lot.
During the trail you will need to climb, walk on small ledges of stone and make sure to balance yourself.
Good hiking shoes and small backpack which can hold your Water bottle (highly recommend) is essential so that your hands are free. Depending upon your ability to hold off hunger you may carry small snack in the backpack.
Approximately the trail it self is about 3+ miles and you can enjoy the quietness of nature along with Potomac river at the bottom.
Typically Spring and Fall morning are best. In Summer try to avoid going for hiking during hot/humid days as the trail can be exhausting. Keep you cell phone in your backpack for emergencies.
We have seen people from all ages doing the trail, kids as small as 3.5 year to older folks above 75 are going on trail. As long as you follow the trail path and in reasonable good health you should able to complete trail, else there are emergency exits at half way to the trail.

Hiking in the Woods - C&O National Park

By Marcia P |

Monday morning went on an early morning hike on Bill Goat Trail B, not C, won't do that again, you have to climb boulders on that trail. B was lovely, walking through the woods, listening to early morning birdsong. The path parallels the Potomac River and there are view from above but its more fun when it dips near the water. The river was swollen, banks no longer in view, and tree trunks underwater.

In two places the path were underwater so we clambered over hills strewn with rocks, it was great. We sat atop one hill on a large square stone and had breakfast that we had brought along. It was 56 degrees when we started with a breeze but we soon warmed up with the hike.

Do remember that the 1 1/4 mile hike turns into 2 1/4 when you take the tow path back to your car. We saw turtles, great blue herons, a little green heron and a frog. Lots of birds around but can never find them in the canopy of leaves.

Short, difficult, worthwhile

By AfricaAsiaTraveller |

The trail, as notices make clear, is not for strollers. In some places you have to leap from rock to rock, with deep crevices in between. In one place I (age 70) had to instruct a young woman (age 30) in much better physical condition than I, on how to address a steep rock face where one must study and then anticipate the series of hand-and-footholds. This is not to make it sound impossible, we met lots of people in varying physical states undertake it successfully. But the Park Service does have to medivac several people each year, so consider before you undertake it.

Got Engaged Here

By runnybunny15 |

We love this easy hike. There is one rocky part where you have to scale a wall, so I don't recommend doing the whole trail with small children.

Great trail! Beautiful!

By worldtraveler013 |

We hike this at least twice a month during the year. It is nice to see the colors and wildlife change though the various seasons. Often we take our kids who love it. They cannot do all of Billy Goat A so we usually leave 2/3s of the way through via the emergency exit. It's just enough for our 4 & 6 year old.

Trail A is definitely worth a visit

By Vadim S |

Billy Goat is divided into 3 sections and most interesting section (A) is easiest accessed from C&O Canal park on MD side by walking less than half a mile on C&O canal. My kids enjoy rock scrambling and have been making full loop ever since they hit age 5. Many sections require good balance and jumping between rocks so more difficult for little kids who cannot jump that far.
If you are adventurous, bonus climb is a bit off the official trail - in the place where trail turns and curves away from the river inland, proceed forward through a small trail and try to climb the cliff ahead - it is fun, and if you make it you can see kayakers playing on MD Chute (or make it back to Anglers Inn lot if this is where you parked the car).

Hiking and a Trip Back in Time

By Thomas H |

If you want to see magnificent views of the Potomac River, marvel at the power of the water rushing through Great Falls, watch mules pull a 19th century barge through canal locks AND hike one of the best short trails near Baltimore/DC, then go to Great Fall National Park just off the DC Beltway. The hike can be anywhere from a couple of hours to all day depending on how many of the trail segments you decide to take. On the A section there is lots of rock scrambling and the trail in some sections is more of a leap from boulder to boulder as the blue markers guide you high over the river with impressive views of the western slope and the river upstream and down.

Look for good trail maps on the Internet to show you all of the options and if you are there at mid-day on the weekends you will be able to experience (and ride on) the old canal barge that moves slowly from lock to lock in the way it has for over a hundred and fifty years.

Have fun and brings lots of water on the trail.

First-Time Billy Goat Hike - Trail A - Phenomenal!

By FancyNancy |

Woke up, checked the weather, and packed up to hike! What gorgeous views! Wow! In hindsight, I should have packed lighter and probably should have taken a friend. There are some challenging parts to maneuver over rocks. Wear proper shoes. Hiking poles would only get in the way. I loved it! I took my time and enjoyed every moment. I only scraped my leg once. As I was leaving, the ambulance was arriving to help someone who reportedly "fell off the rock". Yikes! They said "it happens all the time". Have fun but be careful!

pretty sly

By ronnyveezer88 |

This place has some pretty scary spots. If you fell off of the cliffs you would die. that would not be fun. There are also copperheads. They will kill you. You may ask my good friend Matt.

Very challenging

By smerk44 |

Before I took this trail I was advised it had “some rocks” - no, it is ALL rocks. And there’s no way to get out of them. Not for anyone without sure footing or older people. It had too many rocks to really be enjoyable.

More Leaping than Hiking

By Joe W |

Yes, do this. We stopped to stretch our legs on a long summer road trip. I am a capable hiker but I'm not any sort of expert. I took my two girls 12 & 13 and we did the "A" part of the trail & it was fantastic. Very little flat trail ground to walk on. Almost all boulders and jumping from rock to rock. The 50' climb was a surprise when we first saw it but my kids were so proud when they got to the top. If you're anywhere near this trail you need to do this hike.

I was challenged...

By gcolon58 |

I recently hiked the Billy Goat Trail A, with an experienced hiker. My first time hiking! Did wear hiking boots...glad I did...had some slippery moments that would've caused a sprained ankle. Toward the end of the trail, I dehydrated (no fun), but I hung in there and completed Trail A. Was still sick when done...I did have plenty of water, but it really didn't help me much. I should have researched the "do's and don'ts" of first time hikers. Regardless, I would do it again...it was a lot of fun and challenging.

MUD!!!

By KathyZanoff |

As long as the weather holds it is a wonderful hike, however if it has rained in the last 24 hours, it mud and mush land. Wear good hiking boots!!

By 58leon75 |

fun, fun, fun...wonderful views, good exercise, challenging in a few spots, but manageable...and I'm in my late 50s. OK to sit on your bum and slide a bit if need be... :)

Not for ones who are out of shape!

By Bill B |

BGT was on my bucket list. I did it with my GoPro Camera and iPhone camera. Got over 100 great shots which I look at often. When the trail turns rocky or steep on section A, you really have to take care to avoid falling! Would I hike again, absolutely? Just requires care and fitness to complete especially on the boulders and especially if you are a senior! Bill B. Oakton, VA.

The billy goat B trail kicked our butts!

We came to visit our friends in virginia and my friend said we would take our kids to great falls for a "nice walk"... It ended up a 4 hour hike with a lack of water and 4 tired and hungry kids!! The billy goat trail
we went on was supposedly "easy"... But it was anything but easy... ESP for myself with plantis fasciitis....so while it was a beautiful place, I recommend making good plans for time, water, and length of your walk.

If you survive, it is great

By Skipper090 |

This is one of the most deadly trails in the U.S. because ordinary hikers try it without training, experience or water. In the Summer it can get really hot, and when you are half way in it is a long way out to get out - people die every year of heat stroke and/or dehydration. If you are a good hiker, good at rock climbing, and very careful, and no one in the crowd ahead of you does anything stupid to knock you down, this can be a very fun trail with great views. If not, you may die. There is limited cell phone coverage, and medvac requires a helicopter and thus any rescue is very slow. Note that only parts of the trail are dangerous, so get a map to show you what you may want to avoid (and help you stay on the trail).

A great spot

By David G |

Although one can take a casual stroll on the C&O Canal's tow path, the Billy Goat Trail does require decent hiking shoes and some willingness to climb. There are two trails, each with two entrances. A good hike with great views of the Potomac River. A great close-in to DC visit with nature. Very crowded on nice weekends, but you'll have it to your self M-F.

Awesome hiking trail

By Dave C. |

We visited here while in the DC area and it was fantastic. My wife and I have three girls ages 9-14 and they did fine on the trail. But, if you have young kids, you need to be extremely careful where you're stepping. You are essentially walking from one rock formation to another and there is some climbing involved. They don't call it the billy goat trail for nothing. There were a few moments when we asked ourselves if we made the right decision, but it worked out fine. I will say that we only did part of the hike - at the halfway point, there is an option to get back on the main trail back. It took us about 1 1/2 hrs to do half, but we took our time.

The views are very scenic and definitely would do it again. If you're not looking for a good workout, do a different trail. If you want a little adventure and some awesome views, make sure you go on the Billy Goat.

Best Trail in Maryland!

By Michael B |

This trail never disappoints. This has rocks to climb, places to chill out, great views, trees, and even ends near the Great Falls overlook. If you are in the area and want a great day outside getting exercise, this is the trail. Good for people of all ages, but they will need to do some basic climbing to get through the full trail.

Beautiful scenery and lots of rock climbing

By kleinsa |

We have often hiked this trail alone or with our kids. It follows the Potomac River over buck rocks and boulders and through easy woodsy parts. It is fun, close to town, and often crowded with people and dogs on the weekend.

Slippery Trail

By Naren S |

I went on the trail with several friends. We were constantly trying to navigate rocks up and down the trail. You have to be very cautious since the trail can be very slippery . Potomac River views are great

By fragglesfriend |

Being a good deal lighter and fitter than previous visits to DC area, this time we decided to try the Billy Goat trail at Great Falls. There are three trail sections to choose from, all leading off the tow path by the canal. We opted for trail A which is described as 'strenuous' - you follow blue marks 'blazes' on rocks and trees to find your path, which involves negotiating your way over and around rocks of all sizes, including one steep cliff which is quite a challenge but looks way scarier than it is - no rock climbing skill or equipment needed, plenty of hand and foot holds. The trail took us just over 3 hours including the walk on the tow path to and from the car. Really felt we'd achieved something at the end. Highly recommended.

Bring your hiking boots and your camera

By 30POP |

The trail starts out along the towpath of the canal, then heads off to the river's edge with lots of rock to climb. There is not much elevation, only up and down the rock surfaces. You don't need equipment, only agility. The views are worth the effort. If climbing doesn't appeal, the towpath is easy to walk or bike along.

Can't get enough, wish I could go every day! So much fun, and absolutely GORGEOUS!

By DrPepperT16 |

There are multiple Billy Goat trails at Great Falls, but my favorite by far is Trail A! If you are up for an adventure, surefooted, and at least in decent physical shape, (you don't have to be insanely fit or anything, but keep in mind that it IS strenuous and can be VERY dangerous if you are not careful) than this is the place for you! As I mentioned earlier, there are multiple trails there, as well as an overlook of the falls that would be good for anyone at any level, but Trail A is such an adventure! (There are also signs warning you of the more dangerous areas as well if you are trying to avoid the more challenging areas, just make sure to pay attention when you go and only do what you feel comfortable with!)
Trail A will take you on an adventure like none other though, and you will TOTALLY forget that you are just a few miles outside of our nation's capital, and feel a WORLD away from everything. There are paths and trail markers, but you can kind of go off of the paths if you want and check everything out, just be careful! You will go through a period of rock/ boulder hopping, and also up a pretty sheer rock, but again, if you are in decent physical shape and fairly surefooted, you should be good to go!
Bringing some water and snacks is a definite must, as there is only one snack shack at the entrance, and the trail will take you a couple of hours. Make sure that you bring a backpack or something that you don't have to actually hold, as you will need your hands free to climb at certain points, and purses REALLY get in the way. Also, don't jump off the rocks into the water, you will get yelled at, there ARE park rangers along the way watching out for things like this. We watched a group of teens learn the hard way once, haha. You will get to some areas where you can dip your feet in the water and freshen up a bit on hot days, so that's nice. I think the park entrance fee is only like $5 per car too, totally worth it! It can get a bit crowded in the afternoons, (especially on weekends) so I also find early morning hikes to be the best. If you haven't tried this yet though, and you live anywhere in the DC area and are up for a bit of adventure, it's a definite must, you will thank me later! Also, don't forget your camera for the great views!! :-)

Hands down best trail in DC area

By tom g |

This is an incredible wilderness hike only a few miles from the city. Even kids who hate hiking dig the boulder hopping and rock scrambles. My seven year old's favorite part is the free climb up a fifty foot cliff alongside the Potomac. Only drawback is that the trail is far from being a secret. On weekends choke points develop at narrow or steep sections due to the large number of people on the trail.

Fun Hike

By VIP7844 |

Great hike. Trail A requires you to climb over and around rocks most of the time so it may be difficult for those with knee or feet problems. Take plenty of water. Great views of the river all along the way. You can see across the river to the Virginia Great Falls where there are people rock climbing.

Walk back along the normal walking trail along the canal to see wildlife.

Outstanding and Challenging

By Trish L |

Have done this trail twice and found it equally challenging each time. Lots of huge boulders to climb over, and with breathtaking views along the way. Not for the unprepared or out of shape as it is considered "difficult."

Nothing even close to this within 75 miles of DC!

By racecar69 |

I am a regular. That means I've been doing the Billy Goat "A" Trail since 2001. As of 2014 Its been guesstimated that I have over 1000 legs of the "A" Trail from end to end. There are times I will do a "Double" or "Triple" or "Quad". The Double is my regular. Yes there were a couple years I did not make it out here and I have never gone "Billy Goating" in February. Lack of daylight and ice will get you in trouble.
What to expect...
Piliated Woodpeckers laughing and sounding like jackhammers
The foxes are watching you... always
The deer own this place after sunset
Little toads under your feet just after sunset
Single passage many places
If you see a black snake... you can't catch it, they're too damned fast over this terrain
The lizards/skinks.. other than the blue-lined, there appears to be a variation of a "Plestiodon" where the colour varies between the east end and west end of Bear Island (although I am not a herpetologist)
Avoid going off the trail into the center of the island. (The only place I have ever found ticks or poison ivy.)
In season, during the day... Purple Horse Beach is a sauna bath, don't stop there, it will sap your energy
Sand under your shoes is like a million micro ball bearings
Under the canopy after sunset... it goes black fast out there. Sunset hits, get out FAST!
Remember, no matter what your skill level or conditioning, you are never more than 20-25 minutes from and exit in daylight (darkness and rain... you will be lost!)
Do's and Don'ts...
PLEASE... never more than 4 or 5 to a group
much of this is single passage - don't make others wait because you don't know how fragile this ecosystem really is. Large groups are inherently slower and have a tendency to wander and spread. They are also louder and cause animals to go to cover. You end up missing half of what you came out here for.
Before you enter the trail... evacuate yourselves (yes, that is what I mean, stress and heat will take its toll)
There is really no need to take lunch and meals out here. There are no garbage cans,
PLEASE, "Leave No Trace". (several of us regulars on occasion will bring garbage bags and pick up behind the visitors) We shouldn't have to.
Romantic couples are exempt, there are a couple of private places they can take meal together... but then they already know these things. ;) (don't bother them)
Out here, stay hydrated.... and remember,
There are not 2 flat spots next to each other... if you've been here less than 10 times, you will slip or trip.
Shoes are more important than water. You can exit thirsty, but not with a broken ankle!
Its too easy to turn an ankle out here, if your hiking shoes have ankle support, Wear Em
As for water, I do a 12 oz bottle per leg. In the heat I carry an extra 8 oz coconut water.
(all of which are frozen when I start, do this if you can)
for 5 years I used a camelback... really isn't necessary, 1 frozen water in each pocket
suffices for the last 10 years... just a guideline... adjust for your needs
Never let your weight and momentum get in front of your feet! Nothing good can happen!
When climbing or descending rocks, Step on the pointy parts. You can pivot and stop.
These rock formations have been here for 200 million years. It will not move today!
Flats can cause you to slip. Sand will make you slip, Wet will make you slip!
If you slip, there is a good chance you will hurt yourself.
When on the Traverse or Purple Horse Beach, a hand is as good as a foot.
A butt is as good as 2 feet.
Ascending the Traverse, use All Fours, just like a Billy Goat.
Descending the Traverse, feet in front, right hand on the wall.
When you complete the Traverse, you have earned your "Billy Goat Wings"!
STAY ON THE ISLAND! Do not go into the water... It is Federal Violation and $500 FINE!
Half a dozen to a dozen people are lost out here each year, and its getting worse!
They will ticket and or arrest you. Don't be ignorant, please! Don't ruin it for the rest of us
Cabin John River Rescue gets over 100 Emergency calls out here a year.
I have seen them on 3 separate calls on a single Sunday in May.
Don't bring the whole family out here with Aunt Pearl, Grandma and Uncle Sanjay!
Take them to an air-conditioned restaurant.
Church groups, please don't bring a busload of members out here.
Your leaders really don't know this terrain and a group of 20 or 30 all at once does more damage to the ecosystem than 100 individuals throughout the day.
And it is just rude to others who have to wait for those stragglers to pass, or tie up the Traverse for 30 minutes. Baptizing out here is not allowed. Please leave the copperheads alone. This is not an Appalachian church.

I love this place. There is nothing comparable inside of 75 miles of DC in any direction.
you are just 13-14 miles upstream from downtown Georgetown. Here you can see the pileated, heron, beaver, copperheads, blacksnakes, hognose, foxes, raccoons, dear, eagles, owls, snappers. It is challenging. I live on the Virginia side, that is for tourists, the Billy Goat keeps you aware, This is reality. You can get hurt, you will get sweaty and exhausted and scraped. You will love this place. Typically, give yourself 90 minutes, don't stop too long at any one point. It will change your pace and timing. If you do become overheated or tired, stop at TM (Trail Marker) 2. it is the coolest spot on the trail, plenty of places to sit. And it is only a 3 1/2 minute hike back out to the Towpath along the Emergency Exit.
Many people do plan only to do a Half Billy Goat and this is where they call it a day.

If you see me out here, say hello. I'll show you the cactus, the Seneca Red Sandstone, Spitzbergen, The rock that does not belong (along Mather Gorge), the old Indian Trail, the Sunset Split, the Mark of Zorro, the D channel, the rain gully, the traffic circle, the arc, the rock-tree split, the traffic circle and the old trail. I show you the fallen trees across the paths and tell you when they came down or rotted away. I may even show you the water stash which I always keep at least 2 bottles supplied out here above ground and about 30 people know about it and use it.

This is a good hike, but not for the feint of heart

By slaterinde |

We hiked this trail as part of a family outing (3 people) and really enjoyed it! Our daughter had been there quite a few times, but it was my first time (I think my wife had done it once before). It's as challenging as you want it to be with plenty of options to bail out if time or effort is a constraint. We arrived at around 9am on a Saturday morning and it was relatively crowded already; go early if you can to avoid the crowds.

Terrific hike and views

feel like you are in the Western United States. Great views of the Mather Gorge. Nice loop hiking and great kayaking.

Strong ankles required Trail B

By Carol B |

Rocky path makes this trail fun but not too difficult, however, much of the way, you must make some wise decisions on which rock to step on, so take your time, stay off your smartphone (I need to heed my own warning), and enjoy the INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL river views ! Approx. 3 miles which my walking app registered as 6400 steps !

A tough trail

I loved this trail, I enjoy a challenge and this certainly provided it. If you go bring good shoes and plenty of water.

awesome exercise

This can be a very challenging hike, or a good solid hike that kids could do if you quit at the half way exit point.

Wonderful Park and Great Trails

By Fufina514 |

Really beautiful park with easy long walking path, side paths off to overlooks of the raging Potomac River and 4 different Billy Goat Trails. Hike Billy Goat Trail B which was through woods and over rocks. Great half day spent at the park. Make sure to keep an eye out for turtles.

Adventurous hike

Beautiful and adventurous hike along great falls and Potomac river, the rocks make it but strenuous, but over all great hike section A, highly recommend.

Most Fun trail I have ever hiked

By Doc G |

I have never had so much fun on a hike before! I will definitely do this again, I certainly want to bring friends with me. Families were on the trail, some with children as young as five or six years old. They can do it, with help. Very highly recommended! The walk back on the tow trail is flat and easy. Lots of history and Great Falls itself is a huge bonus!

Challenging, but scenic and fun

By alanthesam |

This trail nestled in Great Falls, on the Maryland side is a tough trail to hike, but well worth the effort. The views of the river are amazing, and there are plenty of opportunities to rock climb ... for any level of experience

Awesome

We want to go again, we love it. We went with friends and we had a great time. Good to ride bike. Beautiful views.

Excellent place to hike near Washington DC

By NaveenNJ |

Just got back from there today...wow!! it was an exhilarating hike and well worth my 2 hour drive to get there. It was very hot and humid today and most parts of the trail have at least some shade - but do bring your sun glasses, hat and sunscreen. The rock hopping was fun. Views of the river and rapids are wonderful but just not breathtaking. If you want solitude your only option is to arrive early on a weekday or on a "not the best outdoor weather" type of day - for this place is packed with people otherwise.

Bring fluids and be prepared for a physically strenuous hike. If you are physically even somewhat fit, you shouldnt have any real trouble getting through the day. However the rocky terrain and humidity could challenge you if the weather was like today. There is however always the option to do only the less strenuous sections of the hike (trail B and C) if you like.

I spotted a few great blue herons, fish (carp), turtles and eagles if you enjoy animals.

All in all - a must do for any outdoor enthusiast.

What a workout...hope you like jumping from and climbing rocks!

By julesnu |

This was a tough hike for people who are not used to exercise. But the views and history are worth it. Here's more of my adventure: http://www.learnliveandexplore.com/2012/06/live-billy-goat-trail-on-potomac.html

Great in dry weather and with good fitness

By maggieMD |

Have done the trail twice. Both were on great fall days. It could be dangerous if it was damp or wet. Pretty easy to follow. You hike to it from Great Falls where it costs $5 to park. It takes a couple of hours at least.

Gorgeous views

By billygoathiker |

I regularly hike the Billy Goat A trail. Round trip from the Tavern parking lot is 4.5 miles and takes 2 1/2 hours usually. This is a challenging, but short, technical hike with a bit of rock scrambling and a climb up a 50 ft rock wall. Billy Goat A is the only hard trail of the 3 Billy Goat trails. It is also the only one in a protected area of the park- therefore no pets are allowed. If you have a dog or are not an experienced hiker do yourself a favor and hike the B trail instead. B is also much less crowded. If you hike A, wear hiking boots or at least tennis shoes with good rubber soles, bring water and a camera.
Highlights:
- Gorgeous views of the Potomac River, particularly Mather Gorge (I would also take the Olmsted Overlook which has a boardwalk trail- 15 minutes, best views of the river).
- Very well marked. Follow the blue blazes. Hiking off trail is prohibited as it damages fragile plant life and exposes you to ticks and a greater chance of meeting with snakes.
-Herons, turtles, woodpeckers, turkey vultures, deer and lizards can be frequently spotted. Especially in the mornings.
- Only part of this National park that is actively patrolled by "Billy Goat Trail Stewards". They are likely the 1st people to help you if you are injured or accidentally off trail.

Lowlights:
-Very crowded on weekends, holidays & free park days.
-Many people on this trail do not belong here. Don't come here unless you are an experienced hiker and willing & able to stay on trail. Otherwise you are ruining it for the rest of us.
- This is a trash free park. So if you have any trash take it home with you.
-Copperheads and northern water snakes.

Beautiful Hike

By Maria O |

Love hiking along the Billy Goat Trail. Several routes, from easy to medium (a bit of climbing over rocks). My dog loves the trail (and occasionally jumping in the canal or splashing in the Potomac. Very pleasant way to spend a few hours. Parking across from Old Angler Inn (revamped with casual area added), and public restrooms in the parking lot.

Get off the beaten path

By Max v |

Bumper-to-bumper on nice weekends, but you can forge your own trail. Down near MM3 there are some great places to explore and try your hand at running rocky slopes up-and-down. Highly recommend the overlook trail as the final leg of the loop.

lots of rocks

By mad155 |

Did this hike this weekend. From the parking lot and through all sections of billy goat and back along the tow path almost 5 miles. a couple of folks were trying to run it. i dont recommend that because there are a lot of rocks and some hopping around. we did the hike during some sprinkles and after a heavy rain. the rocks are slick when they are wet. It was a cold, wet hike so it was not crowded. but as we were leaving the crowd was beginning to show up because it was getting nicer out. there is a snack shop there that was open but we were off to another place for lunch in Potomac. Fun hike, might be tough for little legs, i.e. kids, but adults in decent shape will have no problems.

GREAT VIEW! YOU SHOULD GO WHEN YOU HAVE GREAT WEATHER!

By Shannon Y |

Come to the Billy Goat Trail in Potomac, Maryland! The Billy Goat trail is a hiking trail alongside the C&O canal. There are many rocks and a gorgeous river that gives you a magnificent view. If there is bright sun, make sure to bring extra sunscreen and bug screen since it does get quite buggy around there and the hot sun will be very strong as you are walking around the paths. Water is a must. You will need extra hydration even if it is cloudy, since you will get easily tired of walking or running. When I went hiking on the trail there were many sloped rocks that could be difficult for children under the age of 4. There was one point on the trail where I had to cross between a small pond river, which might be scary for some younger children. If you are interested in bringing a friendly pet on your journey, remember that you can only hike around Trail B and C. Make sure to stay on the left or right if a biker, runner, or a family using a stroller is coming through the path. Hope you have an amazing time on your journey through The Billy Goat Trail!

Best trail in the DC area

Good decent hike, B+

By riva9129 |

I495 to exit 41 left on McCarthur Blvd leads u to the parking areas. I parked across from the visitor center near the bathrooms which were super clean!
So parking here u kinda do the Billy Goat Trail in reverse, meaning the Marker #s go from 3 to 1. The Trail has some really great pic opportunities looking out over the Potomac. On the other side u can see rock climbers on the cliffs. Really neat, the other side is Virginia.
The Trail is marked with blue lines spray painted on rocks every once in a while. Just look around and u will notice them. The Trail was a little harder than I thought it would be but nothing crazy. I brought 1 bottle of water and it was fine for me. Maybe a lot smarter to get a CamelBack or like a small backpack.
After the Trail ends it dumps u onto the canal road which is packed dirt:gravel. So maybe 80 minutes on the Trail and 30 minute walk back following the canal. Def got sweaty but today was 84 degrees.
Get there early when I left there was 0 parking and kinda a lot of people. Sunday today.
I would go again. Oh I saw Turtlea and a decent amount of fish which was a bonus.
Safe safe clean clean area!!!!

Did not know we had these great trails so close to home!

By greatatrip!! |

Husband and I are both in our mid 60s. reasonably fit but not the fittest.
We started with section B, then C the easiest and today we ventured on section A.
All lovely. Section A is challenging, we started on the river side and thought we would turn around when we got to the climbing section. But we did it! We felt great afterwards. A little scary at times but if you take your time, have good shoes and are prepared to use your hands it is doable.
Did not make it all the way to the end. There is an "emergency trail" to the towpath and we took that, decided to leave the rest for another day since it was also too hot with risk of storm and we had enough.
Free parking near the Tavern with NPS card for seniors. I am not sure if you can park at the other end for free and walk from Anglers inn parking.
Bring water.

Nice challenge

By T_L_H34 |

Challenging hike in beautiful setting. Have to do some scrambling over rocky portion. Part of the Great Falls Park. You should also go to the Great Falls overlook.

One of the Best Hiking Treasures Around

By Elaine H |

We've tried all 3 Billy Goat Trails and each in its own way offers delight, challenges and priceless views of the Potomac River in all seasons. It would be difficult to select a favorite, but each is do-able though the "A" trail seems more of a challenge. You can select any one or do part of one; you can walk along a moderately flat path or scamper over boulders; you can stop to watch the rock climbers, the kayakers or sit and gaze over the waters. You can climb up to the heights of some flat boulders and spread out a picnic lunch. Whatever you do, however long you wish to spend, however great the exercise you aim to achieve, it's all there on any of the Billy Goat Trails -- A, B or C.

Hike well worth doing

By Explorer1904 |

The Billy Goat Trail along the Potomac River has three sections, A,B and C. Access is from the C&O Canal Tow Path. I have done all three sections but did section C yesterday. Section C allows dogs and is the closest section to DC. Parking is easier at Carderock for this section than trying to park across from Old Anglers Inn, parking there on a nice day is terrible any time after 10 am. Section C also has fewer hikers, we saw only 6 people and you hike by Carderock climbing area where most nice days someone is climbing. The hike took 2-3 hours to complete and is relatively flat and easy. Section A and B are a bit more challenging and you need to be careful! I recommend taking a picnic lunch and eating on the shady boulders over looking the slow moving river.

Great Hike with some Bouldering

Great views as you hike along the Potomac's rapids and cascades. Some bouldering but not too difficult unless you have small ones or elderly that have difficulties climbing/jumping.

Great hiking along the Potomac

The trail was great, though not recommended for those in flip-flops, old/young, or not-too-stable [the tow path followed by the boardwalk out to the falls are best for the later].

See the Dramatic Potomac Gorge, Visitors Center & Falls

By JohnAnnColumbia_MD |

We visited the Billy Goat Trail on Sat. 27 Oct. 2018. Park in the free lots across from the Old Angler’s Inn on MacArthur Blvd. Checkout the trail map and info board in the lot and follow the trail about 700’ to cross the bridge over to the other side of the C&O Canal. Follow the towpath & canal northwest about 1,500’ where it meets the south end of Widewater Lake. Proceed on the towpath for another 500’ looking left for the start of the Billy Goat Trail. The trial heads west 440’ to terrific views of the Potomac and up and down the cliffs that define the waterway. It’s another 1.4 miles from here to where the trail once again joins the towpath. From there it’s just 1,500’ to the trail on the left that will take you to spectacular views of the dramatic Great Falls and cascades (The views from MD are much better than from the VA side.) From the head of the overlook trail go another 1,600’ up the towpath to the Great Falls Tavern and Visitors Center with restrooms and drinking fountains at the small white building just beyond. There is a nearby concession stand with picnic tables in the shade. The visitors center has great static displays but the informative movie shown in the back room of the Tavern is especially informative….DON’T MISS IT! Composed of movie clips from 1917 it showed scenes of the operation of the 180 miles of the C&O canal from Cumberland to Washington. It mades you feel like you had experienced its entire length.
It is easy to spend an hour and a half seeing the falls, visitors center and a restroom break. It’s a 2.1 mile walk (about 45 min.) back south along the tow path to return to the Old Angler’s Inn. Total time for the 5.5 mile circuit hike is 2+ hours plus time spent at the Great Falls park. Hiking shoes & poles recommended.

Good hiking and great views

By stempster |

It's hard to believe that this hike is so close to DC. I've hiked the trail starting when my kids were very young -- it is a great family activity. Parts can be strenuous (especially on a typical hot and humid summer day in DC). The best part is getting out on the rocks overlooking Great Falls on the Potomac River. A great way to spend a couple of hours.

Spectacular view after climbing boulders and rocks.

By SusanfromMaryland |

Billy Goat Trail is one of the most spectacular hikes in the Potomac area - but one of the most challenging. After venturing down what appears to be a flat trail, suddenly the hiker is climbing small rocks, then larger, then scaling up and down boulders and large climbs that can require one to hang on tight and to walk carefully while holding on. Not for the faint of heart but the rewards are an outstanding view of the Potomac, Virginia climbers, kayakers and nature. Definitly worth the climb. It takes about 2 1/2 hours and is crowded on the weekends. Go early for the best hiking!

Fun Trail outside DC

By Justin P |

Billy Goat Trail is a series of trails along the Potomac River on the Maryland side in Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historic Park. As the name suggests, you need to be part mountain goat to hike this trail! There are actually three Billy Goat Trails, but I've only done Section A. This section starts from the towpath at the stop gate between locks 16 and 17, about a mile south of the Great Falls Tavern. The trail heads out onto Bear Island and runs along the rocky cliffs above the Potomac River in Mather Gorge. Initially, the trail is pretty flat and easy, though the entire trail is very rocky. Good hiking boots with ankle support are recommended. As you progress down the gorge, the trail becomes more difficult with lots of climbing and scrambling, up over, around, and under huge rocks and boulders. At one point roughly in the middle, you will have to climb 30 to 40 feet up a cliff. There's a big crack down the middle to give you a foothold and it's not really as hard as it sounds - no ropes or harness required, but not recommended for those with a fear of heights. After the cliff, you'll come down to river level at Purplehorse Beach with great views of the river and gorge. Soon, the trail loops back around and ends at the towpath near Widewater. Although I've never done them, I understand that Sections B and C are much easier. Section A, however, is great fun, albeit somewhat challenging. I would consider it similar to Old Rag in Shenandoah for comparison. If you're in good shape, not afraid of heights, and used to rock scrambling, the Billy Goat Trail is a great adventure, just 15 miles outside Washington, DC.

What fun!

By Deborah F |

Billy Goat Trail - section A - what fun! I've lived within an hour for several years and can't believe I put off going. With a little scrambling experience - or just common sense and careful foot placement - you can easily get through the sections marked difficult. They rate at about a V0 for those who boulder. Do use care in deciding when to arrive; this is an extremely popular trail, so early is good ... but it is indeed a boulder scramble in the middle, so you don't want to be out when it is icy.

If you wish, you can easily add a trip over to the Great Falls for viewing as well. Those in good shape may want to do it twice.

As a suggestion, start on the "further" end (closer to the Great Falls overlook). This will enable you to climb up the steepest section rather than climb down. Also, if you find yourself going "down" the steep section ... consider turning around so you face the rock, rather than going down as you would with stairs. That way you can grip the sides and you'll find the going easier (and safer). Enjoy!

I Love the Billy Goat Trail!

By landc2015 |

I have been on the Billy Goat trail numerous times of the years and it is a wonderful experience. Please note, however, this is real hiking and involves rock climbing. In other words, this is not a trail for flip-flops and it is not a trail to go on without water, etc. Be smart. I must admit that I also take some pride in being a 55 year old who can still do the trail as I have noticed that I am now on the older side of people I encounter there.

Great hike

By VLMaryland |

The billy goat trail is quite possibly my favorite hike and certainly the one I have visited the most. The hike is the perfect combination of strenuous and fun.The rock scrambling part is particularly fun.I would recommend this hike for anyone except families with toddlers. Overall this is an incredible hike.

Great Trails

By Angus Ogg |

There are 3 trails each with a different level of difficulty. C is the easiest, just flat rail, B has some climbing required, A if for experienced climbers that are properly attired

Wear sturdy boots if you're not a goat!

By noori_8 |

I've been hiking this trail for years. It's always a pleasant walk and I'm often surprised at how challenging the trail can be. The trail name is pretty accurate: a goat would easily be able to roam the rocks and crevices. Not so easy for humans. Because this is such a popular urban escape, there seems to be an assumption that this is an easy stroll along the river bank. Not so. This is a rugged trail that demands respect, hiking experience and sturdy footwear.

The rewards are many along the Billy Goat Trail: views of the river, Great Falls, rock scrambling and just plain fun. Afterwards, it's nice to get a refreshment at the nearby Old Angler's Inn.

Beautiful views of the river below.

By luv4phood |

This is a super fun trail! Lots of great overlooks to the river below. Apparently, this trail has the reputation of being "difficult" but maybe it is just a more difficult trail for the area. Just take your time and stay on the trail and all should be fine.

Best Hiking Trail around PERIOD.

By D_Kirk2013 |

This is my favorite trail and has been since I was about 5 years old. With children of my own now I just can't wait to let them experience this. Best days to go are overcast and slightly cool. The trail has many options for the virgin hiker to the novice.
Its sad to see that people actually don't go here as much as when I was a kid. Literally you could not park in the lot most days now there are plenty of open spaces.
When I was a kid they use to run boat tours down the barges man that was the best. They don't do that anymore due to funding cuts but it was amazing to watch. If you are visiting the area for a tour of DC I would defiantly check this place out. There is more to life than man made structures and beauty to be found even in this big city.

Billy Goat Trail

By TiltedFlipCurves |

If you want any degree of solitude, go off peak or do another section. But setting aside the human fauna, this is a pretty spectacular trail section for a place that can be reached by urban transit in the northeast corridor.

A most worthwhile detour from the main trail!

By Mark G |

Plan on taking this detour deliberately. The views are terrific, and it's just enough off the beaten path to be pleasantly quiet. Signage keeps you where you headed where want to go, and there are plenty of wide spots along the way to stop for a rest and enjoy the forest and views.

Very fun and challenging trail!

By thehungryjack |

We have been wanting to make the trek to the Billy Goat trail for a long time now. I live not to far from Great Falls Park in Mclean, VA; so we had always just ended up hiking there. We ended up doing a loop (found on HikingUpward) of about 8.5 miles that did all sections of the Billy Goat Trail (A, B & C). Section A is by far the most challenging and is VERY rocky. Lots of rock hopping and also a climb up a fairly steep 50ft traverse. It is by all means doable for most people who are fairly athletic, but would not recommend section A for people with bad knees or who are not used to hiking at all. Make sure to wear good, study shoes or boots and bring lots of water and some snacks if you are going to do all 3 trails. I had my 1 year old daughter on my back the entire time; so it may have seemed harder for me than it actually was:-). This is definitely a great place to stop; check out the Visitors Tavern and learn the history of the Canal. I think it was $5 to park, but it was definitely worth it.

Beautiful Trail

By Travelingbear1000 |

One of the most beautiful trails. Parts are more difficult than others so people should check before they hike a more difficult part.

Awesome Hike

By Sarah C |

We hiked Section A of this trail and it was spectacular. I was disappointed by the number of visitors not paying attention to trail signs and avoiding steep sections (the main draw to the trail). Beautiful views of Mather Gorge and the Potomac. Definitely take time to hike this trail if you can handle the terrain.

Great trail

By Alfred J |

I live across the street from the trail which is on the Potomac River. I go there very often as part of my exercise routine. It is a place for tranquility and place away from it all. The Potomac River is a wonder place to vacation even if only two minutes away.

Bring a camera and small binoculars

By Holson67 |

Excellent hike, lots of birds and wildlife. Great views across gorge of serious rock climbers and repellers. Make sure you bring lots of water, I downed 2 liters and could have used more.

A must-do if you're in the Washington, DC area; just make sure you have appropriate shoes for the hike!

By Justin A |

Another fantastic reason why the DC area is one of the best for tourism and sightseeing - the free access to not only world-class museums, but wonderful national parks is what makes Washington the great city it is. Take some time to hang out on the Billy Goat Trail and appreciate the beauty of the Mid-Atlantic. I guarantee you won't regret it!

Beautiful yet Challenging hike.

By MarylandSpartan |

My husband and I have hiked here many times with our girls. It is not an easy hike, but if you can manage it there are some stunning views. There are a few places where you need to climb cliffs, balance along rocks, and hike through rugged terrain. It is a great hike and I would highly recommend it. Just know what you're getting in to before you begin.

Trail C of the Billy Goat

By Nikzleez |

We parked in the Carderock lot which is the closest to trail C. Surprisingly sparse for a Saturday morning compared to the severely packed lot for trail A (most popular). Nice views, but I have nothing to compare. Did not realize there was a West and East portion, but used the towpath once we exited one, to get to the other. Hiking sticks were helpful. The hike was mild and doable for a newbie.

Billy Goat Trail- Beautiful Views of Potomac River

By NatAug |

Great half day hike. Amazing views of Potomac River, very unique geology! We did all 3 sections of the Billy Goat Trail. Section A is moderate/strenuous and requires some rock climbing. Section B and C much easier and less strenuous. If you decide to hike Section A (strongly recommend because of amazing views of Potomac River) make sure you wear proper shoes or hiking boots. In section B and C we saw some wildlife. Most of it pleasant like deer, frogs, turtles, different kinds of birds but we also saw two copperhead snakes, so please be aware of its presence, watch carefully steps, and stay on the trail. The whole trail is very well marked. If you have some extra time I recommend to stop at the Visitor Center and the Museum to learn about Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. Enjoy your hike and don't forget to take a good amount of water.

1 of USA's best Trails

By Agupta20854 |

It's simply one of the best trails. Next to a roaring river, rocks, hills, trees, has it all. It even has a separate biking trail, and camping sites.

Beautiful active hike

By Maya B |

Our family has been going on this fun hike for years. My kids like the big boulders that you need to use your hands to climb. The setting is amazing, the Potomac river, the green forest and the blue sky are beautiful. There is one cliff that you need to scale, so it is not a good hike for people who are afraid of heights or are not in good physical shape.

The Billy Goat Trail is parallel to the gravel tow path, so there is a less strenuous option for the return trip.

There is a park at the one end where you need to pay a nominal fee and has some services.

Never Gets Old

By LadyPhade |

I am lucky enough to have Great Falls in my area to escape to nature when all else fails. Love this place. I have come here more times than I can count and each time my adventures are memorable and fun! Exploring the trail and beyond is a good day waiting to happen. I sometimes bring a blanket, snacks and music and stop half way through to have a picnic chill session on a rock somewhere right on the water..on hot days in my bathing suit catching some rays before my hike back. Make sure to factor time when your doing this trail..a couple of times the sun went down on me and even a storm came through with heavy rains leaving me lost somewhere in the trail. Great place to visit and explore. Follow the blue marks to stay on trail. Pretty easy trail.

Lovely trail

By aandn2015 |

Part of the c&o canal trail. Many parts of this tail have camp sites. Historic and picturesque in nature.

Always love this hike!

By traveller3321 |

I live in the area, and this is one of my favorite spots to get outside and hike. Be aware that some of the loops get crowded on the weekends.

Billy Goat Trail

By savvytraveler506 |

Lots of fun for avid walkers and hikers rewarded by a beautiful views of Great Falls of the Potomac River. Avoid if you have balance issues or issues walking on uneven surfaces and rocks.

By Rhabib13 |

Billy goat trail section 1 is by far my favorite hike in the Maryland area. It combines rock scrambling (or climbing if you bring your bouldering gear) with beautiful views of the Potomac. There are ways to make it easier but we took the more difficult routes and had a blast. Makes your heart race and forehead sweat. Bring snacks to refuel and fluid to hydrate well, in a light hiking backpack. Wear soled shoes with a pointed toe (approach shoes would work great) but also have good traction. I wore my Hiking boots the first time I completed the route but found they were too clunky for this balancy climb, my keen hiking sandals for the 2nd time and they were too slippery on the rocks. The 3rd time I wore my Nike "hiking cross training" sneakers and they were the perfect balance so I stick to them. Bugs were not a problem for any of my hikes. Do not plan to wade in the Potomac...the current is too strong and they are strict on this no swim rule. Bring $5 cash for the state park parking fee. Great way to enjoy nature, escape the city and yet have a workout. Make sure you end the hike with the stroll to the scenic lookout (entrance near the parking lot) to see the falls and to wave at the Virginians because it's well worth the extra 10 minutes and is an excellent way to cool down from your hike. My favorite time to start the hike? 3-4 pm so that it's less crowded and I can catch the Beautiful sunset on the scenic outlook!

Great trail, but bring lots of water

By Brendan S |

The Billy Goat Trail is a challenging hiking trail in Great Falls Park, more a series of rocks and boulders than a "trail." The Park warns how challenging and difficult it is, but really, if you are in good shape and have reasonable balance, you'll be able to finish the trail; if you are in poor health or unsteady, it really is dangerous.

One problem with difficult trails like this is that you have to be constantly watching your feet and miss the scenery, but the Billy Goat Trail has multiple overlooks where you get a chance to see amazing vistas of the Potomac River from far above it. It's a really good route. It is a long and slow hike, but fortunately, you don't have to re-traverse the route to go back - there is a flat towpath at the end that you can use to return to the visitors' center and parking lot.

We hiked the Trail on a blazing hot day, and there is no water or other refreshment at any point on the route. We each drained two bottles of water by the end of the trail and still had to walk a few miles back on the towpath without any water, so stock up with enough to last for several hours.

Beautiful and exerting trail

By millybu2000 |

This is an amazing and fun trail. Requires lots of jumping, scrambling and climbing which makes it even more exciting. My advice is to go early so you can avoid the crowds.

Hidden Gem Outside Washington DC

By atravel2 |

If you are reading this review you may be looking for things to do on your visit to Washington DC. If you have a couple of hours and a car then drive to the Maryland Great Falls Park. At this writing the entrance fee is $5. Close to the parking lot, about two hundred or so yards to the left is path to the the Great Falls (Maryland side) overlook. Don't miss it. I live in Maryland so am fortunate to go there frequently. At the park HQ ask about the very scenic Billy Goat trail but that will require a longer hike, good shoes, but the views are amazing. Enjoy this hidden gem right outside of DC and its worth the trip if you have overdosed on museums:).

When to visit:? anytime but prettiest time of year is May-mid November.

Expect to be surprised and delighted

By Gary B |

We are regulars although as we've gotten older we go less often, but send friends for a hearty hike as the rocks along the Potomac pop up to make it interesting.
When we sent a hiking friend there he came back with a big sigh and a grin that this was one of the more challenging hikes he'd had.
We usually walk back to our parked car after a 2 mile or so treck

A bounty of spring ephemerals

By FJGonzalezG |

We like all sections of the Billy Goat trail, but at this time of the year we gravitate toward the southernmost section, Section C.

Depending on when you visit, you'll see different things. On our last visit in the middle of April, bluebells and spring beauties were almost ubiquitous. There were also lovely clumps of wild blue phlox, may apples, white lilies, spring star flowers, golden ragwort, and assorted asters.

Near the north end of Section C, we saw evidence of beaver activity on a couple of dozen trees.

Due to the stay at home orders at the time, there were more people than usual on the trail on a weekday. Though not enough to make it feel crowded, and folks were mindful and polite about maintaining safe social distancing.

A Harder Hike

By Larry F |

This trail is not for the beginner or anyone with physical dis-abilities. It is a trail for amazing view of the fall line Potomac River at its wildest point within 25 miles of downtown Washington DC. It is a long side trail off the the C&O Canal path. Herons, ducks, geese and Ospreys can frequently be seen along with Vulture and various Hawks. Wear good shoes with real support. Be prepared to scramble up and down some boulders. Nothing too hard but stay alert.

Awesome but Difficutl Hike

By GT in DC |

not a place to commune by yourself with nature, but the rocks, river, and views are an exciting change of pace from words and politics. Bring water, wear sturdy shoes----for most people this could be the most difficult hike they will do. Fit, disciplined and adventurerous third graders on up can do it. Dogs are not allowed. wi

Awesome trail & view

By FitihA |

I just have to say I loved this trail which is just 20 minutes off the Capital Beltway from Silver Spring. I know there are many good reviews on this but I would like to give u a tip or two. First of all if you put the Old Anglers Inn on your navigation, you have the advantage of avoiding parking fee. There are at least three pockets of parking just across the inn. You can also park on street. The second advantage is you have the option of avoiding the big rock climb in the middle of Trail A. You just have to descend down going northwest. It is best to start from this area. Your hike will be faster and fun. A lot of people asked us if they were closer to the end (but they were not) we guessed b/c it was hot and tiresome to start from the visitor center and mostly you have to climb.
If it is summer dont underestimate this hike. carry a lot of water as there is exertion and a lot of sweating. Of course you have the option of taking your rest on the big rocks now and then and enjoy the great veiw.

Super fun trail that requires scrambling

By Yi-Shin S |

It is not your ordinary hike and don't bring your pet with you unless your pet is a mountain goat (hence the name!). You should only attempt it when the weather is nice, because it would be diffulcut and dangerous to scramble over and around huge boulders in raining condition. I only did the loop A (the most strenuous section), it is about 4.7 miles. The trail is well marked (look for the blue color mark on trees and rocks) so it is almost impossible to get lost. There is a section where a steep climb along a cliff is required - it is definitely doable, there are lots of places to secure your hands and feet. After the cliff, there are more boulders. Overall, highly recommended! It is so much fun hiking on Billy Goat because the bouldering terrain makes it so interesting. However, not recommended for people who are afraid of heights or have balance problems. Although I haven't done it, but there is also loop B and C that are less strenuous to hike if you still have energy after loop A.

Great adventure

By 936Dave |

This is a bit of history. This trail follows the Maryland side of the Potomac River, along Great Falls, just north of Georgetown, in DC. The trail is in Maryland, but part of the C&O canal National Park, which runs from Georgetown in DC north west to Cumberland, MD. The trail is rough, not for the fashionable. Wear good hiking shoes, not flip[ flops or sandals, and dress for the weather. take along any food, since there are no places to buy food. Just commune with nature.

Fun, technical hiking close-in to DC

By Acadia1112 |

This is a classic trail not far from DC. The A Section features rock scrambling and great views of the river. B and C are less technical, easier and better for trail running. There is one section on A that requires some fairly steep climbing that may be challenging for small kids or older adults.

GREAT TRAIL, JUST BE PREPARED

By globaltrekster |

This trail is rated difficult for a reason. It is nothing but rocky and slippery. The incline of the traverse is very steep. Bring plenty of water and wear good shoes. I do not recommend the hike for little children.

A must for the Billy Goat in all of us.

By winxalot |

Close to D.C. but still gives a feel of the outdoors. Do wear sensible shoes. It is not called the Billy Goat Trail for no reason. Early morning will give you a less crowded experience. Great for children of all ages who are not averse to scrambling over a few small boulders here and there. But if you are looking for more distance and dolomite, you'll want to go to the George Washington National Forest.

My running spot

By Pepinodicapri |

Here's where I do my jogging almost every weekend when I'm in town, love the trails and they are kept in good condition. My dog loves the water and swims there in summer, you'll see other dogs too. It's a good place to enjoy nature.

Great scenery, fun scrambles

By SouthernMotoMama |

This isn't the easiest of hikes, but man is it worth it! If you like a little light rock scrambling (nothing a pair of hiking boots can't tackle), this is a great hike. The path follows the river most of the way, with some parts near the canal. Fun for the whole family - I've been hiking this trail since I was little!

Great workout and beautiful scenery

By travelsecondlove |

Begin your hike from Anglers Inn (free, limited parking)south of the trail or from north of the trail (near the park entrance) This is a fairly strenuous hike and you'll work up a sweat. Suggested for 8 year old and up. May not be good if too cold (icy)

excellent views and rock scrambling (section A)

By j p |

We last visited section A of Billy Goat trail (1.75 miles) during the week and early in the morning - simply fantastic! Although there were a few other folks out by 9:30 AM, before this it was relatively quiet. All in all, a great day hike!

There are some difficult and challenging sections, but I did see some older folks (60+ years) and younger ones (looked to be 6 & up) having a good time so this trail is certainly OK for most ages of healthy folks.

Surprisingly rugged and beautiful family hike

By Andrew Lowenthal |

The Billy Goat Trail is one of the regions best trails, especially in the C&O canal/Great Falls MD area. It is fun for the whole family but there are a few surprisingly twisty places that could cause some anxiety with the youngest or least experienced hikers. Go during the week if you can and have the mighty Potomac River all to yourself.

Quite a strenuous hike

By Randy C |

A hike that involves climbing over large boulders and up and down hills. I enjoyed the challenge of it all and the pride in finishing the adventure. It is NOT for those of us who are physically challenged or those with heart problems. Also, plan to do this on a cool day!!!!

By Koplaski |

The stair steps blasted into the rock cliffside, going down (or up) depending on where you start, with the Potomac below you.

Beautiful hike

By vaofva_8 |

This hike is beautiful, but it is named "Billy Goat" for a reason. A good portion of the trail is very rocky--if you have knee or hip problems, it can be very uncomfortable. If you can comfortable hike uneven or unstable surfaces, you will enjoy it.

Keeps you young!

By Danièle A |

Be prepared
Good walking shoes are a must
Fun,beautiful views, avoid the larger crowds after brunch
You will be so proud you made it

Great walk with the kids

By CTE |

Convenient and adventurous for the 7-10 year olds scrambling on rocks along the Potomac River. Beautiful environs. If you park at Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center during the winter there is no charge, otherwise $5 (I think).

3 different trails

By lanegurel |

There are 3 different sections which are loops when you consider that access is mostly on and off the C&O Canal. Go south on the Canal from Great Falls ($5 admission per car) or north from Carderock off of Clara Barton Parkway. Old Angler's Inn is near the middle. It's rocky with lots of roots which makes it a rigorous hike. But, at the same time, it's not difficult. The views along the Potomac are worth every step. It's a great trail but often crowded. The Ford's Mine Trail is much easier and not many people seem to know it's there. It begins and ends at the far north end of the Great Falls parking lot.

Fun and challenging walk!

By Vicki A |

If you are looking for a little more adventure along the C & O Canal, this is for you. Over rocks and through lots of trees. Why not. Take the time to go on this trail!

Great Hikes for all

By Chris T |

From our 6 year old son to 50 year old dad, we all had a great time. My 20-something nephews found more ambitous off-shoots and we all had a great day hiking.

Awesome time

By sakflva |

So we did part a and b today with a 9 year old and 4 year old. I worried about the traverse with my 4 year old. With two adults it was fine, when my son couldn't climb the part we picked him up and moved him up. From the parking lot at great falls and back it was about 5 miles. The kids love climbing over rocks and we had a blast. Can't wait to go back!

Waterfalls, trails just outside DC - who knew?

By Pat O |

Hiking up the Potomac on the Maryland side, from Old Angler's Inn to the Park is a wonderful way to spend a weekend afternoon with the family. We took kids, dogs, backpacks with drinks and snacks, dressed in good walking shoes, ready for mud, a few scrapes and knicks, and headed out. What a great view of the river and the falls. And a walk on the granite sides of the river - big rocks and boulders to go over or go around - following the blue blazed trail - is an awesome family (or couples) activity. We need to restart the tradition with our grandkids... Have a great time and enjoy this gem just outside the city.

Great for Photos and beginner hiking

By Jamadalama |

I went on the Billy Goat for my first time hiking. The trail on the Maryland side is very moderate with the exception of the rock wall which was fun. If you are new to hiking it is definitely a great one you could do relatively quick and by yourself.

The trail difficulty aside there is no shortage of great photo opportunities as you can see in the pictures posted. The Potomac River and Trail overlooking it provides great photos anytime of year.

best hike close in to DC

By jinxminx |

The signs say don't park on the side of the road, but you may have to park on the side of the road, because this is a very popular trail. The access is across the street from the Old Angler's Inn Restaurant; there are a couple of parking lots but they fill up quickly. From there you are on the towpath of the C&O Canal, which is nice in its own right. There are multiple hiking trails off the towpath, including Billy Goat Trail sections A, B, and C. A is the best if you like rock scrambling. You will be hiking over rocks and you will need to use your hands at some points to get through.

The river is just gorgeous here. There is a lot going on - tons of rocks to climb on and look at, moss, lichen, pools, vistas, forest. It's great for families once your kids are old enough to climb and hike safely. Great for photographers. Really just amazing in terms of natural beauty close to DC and the suburbs.

Section A = Rocks

By jehenson81 |

So my review title has two meanings. The section A portion of the trail is super fun and a great workout however it is extremely rocky with rugged and slick patches. I recommend coming from the north as the traverse is easier to climb up than to climb down. You need really good shoes and to have your hands free to grip rocks and trees and you make your way over the outcroppings. Now there are two places to park. I used the national park service lot which costs ten bucks. The other place to park is the Angler's lot which is between sections A and B (has the Billy Goat Trail signs along the road). However be warned, you need to get there before ten to get a parking spot. Do not park along the road as I saw a very nice police officer giving tickets to a few dozen cars that ignored the no parking signs that are a constant along the side of the road. It is cheaper to park at the NPS lot than to pay a parking ticket. Section A is also the most popular trail and the most difficult.

Challenging and Fun hiking

By Rtwodogs |

This is not a walk in the park. :). this trail is fin, and challenging in areas. Grab a map, your hiking boots, gloves, and water and enjoy a great day with friends and family. Should have stability and stamina to hike this trail.

Best nature hike in the DC metro area, hands down.

By susan f |

The Billy Goat trail is a 2 -4 mile hike starting at Great Falls Park in Potomac, Md. The falls are impressive and can be seen year round from a 1/4 mile walkway at Great Falls. But the real gem is hiking the Billy Goat trail, about 1/2 mile down the C&0 canal towpath. It winds above the canal, with gorgeous views of the Potomac river. At times the paths are narrow and you may end up clinging to outcroppings or going downhill on your tush. Difficulty is moderate and it's a lot of fun. It's composed of two separate trails, each about 2 1/2 miles in length so you can control the timing and difficulty. This is a favorite for denizens of DC and a great find for tourists.

Great Rock Climb Trail

By McDmeister |

Billy Goat has three sections: Trail C is closest to DC and the easiest; Trail B is just down stream from the Old Anglers entrance to the C&O Tow Path and is best for geasers and kids; Trail A is a level 5 rock climbing trail. All three trails are about 1.5 miles long and start and end on the C&O Canal. Access to BGA is from the Old Anglers Canal entrance (free parking) and Great Falls National Park (all on the Maryland side).

While the walk is strenuous the views of the Great Falls gorge are worth the effort.

GO!

Picturesque water views and large terrapins, turtles, and other wild animals abound

By Shaun J |

If you ever find yourself in the Washington DC area and have an urge to stretch your legs, then I would highly recommend a trip to the Billy Goat Trail. Whether running, biking, or hiking, you can't go wrong. I used to regularly run 8 miles on this trail back in the late 2000's and still rank it highly on my favoured, local scenic runs. Calm and wild water views, large turtles, and other wild animals abound! Comfortable and flat as a pancake terrain. Get yer boots on!

Enjoyable!

By Susan and Phyl T |

We went to Billy Goat Trail this past weekend to get in a good hike, and did we ever! We decided to park in the lot for trailhead A and then take the shadier path on Berma Road, which was a good idea considering how flat it was and how hot the day was. It's a lot less hassle than the actual Billy Goat Trail A and much shadier too. There were lot of people there who were all going to Trail A and the Berma Road hike was much less populated. We thoroughly enjoyed it. It passes by a small lake, some of the old buildings on the canal, and eventually gets you to the Great Falls of the Potomac observation deck on some of the rocky islands in the middle of the Potomac, which is absolutely gorgeous. Definitely worth visiting and spending a couple of hours! Easily accessible by wheelchair too. It's probably a good idea to do the Billy Goat Trail A early in the morning when the sun is not out and there are not so many people.

Great walk but PLEASE respect the one way trail and follow the rules.

By Kimberley P |

Always an excellent walk...however, people - please read the "Do not enter" signs. The trail now is one way and several folks ignore this...this is one way...so please respect trail rules! Other than this - the trail is an awesome adventure all the time!

Best trail near DC

By TexOlly |

I pretty much do this trail every weekend with my son - love the scenery, the ever changing climate and foliage, and the great exercise we get from it. Highly recommend it, although not for small kids and people challenged with standing on top of rocks.

Challenging hike

By NewMexBound |

It was a challenging hike over a continuous series of rocks. Lots of hikers on the weekend day we were there. We did the full loop. This was overkill from my perspective. If you are coming from the Great Falls area, head back to the Towpath on the mid-hike cutoff. You will have done all the exciting stuff by then.

On the edge of Potomac

By Kong C |

Section A is my favorite, although it is typically crowded on weekends, especially when the weather is nice. The view is wonderful, and the hike is nothing you would expect to find in a big city on the US east coast. Dress light (if it is not too cold), and good hiking or trail shoes are a must. Give yourself plenty of time. Parking at the lower lot gets filled early; but Great Falls Park has plenty of parking spaces. Last time on the trail, I saw a person with a prosthetic leg and walking poles. Really inspiring! So get out there, but do stay away from some of the cliffs that hangs of the river (no guard-rails)!

Makes me feel my age

By Stan G |

At 71 years old, I decided to do this again. I used to do this a fair amount 2-3 decades ago but hadn't since. Frankly, I had mixed emotions about this. I do yoga and go to the gym and consider myself in good shape for my age (who doesn't). I put extra padding in my tennis shoes as I remember how jumping down jarred my body and I'm glad I did. I started at the top end. My only break was a few minutes eating a granola bar. I drank as I hiked. I absolutely wasn't trying to rush but when I finished I noticed it took me only 1.35 hours. I always followed the path markers taking the hard parts and not trying to find easier paths.

It made my day!

Come on seniors, if you're in good shape (don't kid yourselves on this) do it.

Awesome Trail

By BobRoll57 |

I'm never disappointed by this hike! I've hiked this trail at least 5 time a year for the past 15 years and there's always something new to see. It's my favorite day hike in the DC area. It gets very, very crowded on a nice weekend day. It's best to go on a less than perfect weekday early in the morning or later in the day. If you are going to visit more that 4 times a year, it pays to get the annual Great Falls pass which costs $20 and is good for both the Maryland side and the Virginia side. You can also park for free across from the Old Angler's Inn if there's space.

Excellent hike

By tikidream |

This is one of our favorite hikes. It is a moderate to strenuous hike with some rock scrambling. In the summer bring water and year round bring a snack and enjoy the scenery.

Great hike for all!

By Tarek H |

The billy goat trail is a wonderful start to the weekend. Get there early to beat the crowds and you can enjoy hiking through the rock scramble, or walking along the gravel path. Either way you'll enjoy the sights of this beautiful outdoor destination.

A staycation on the weekend!

By RoriESQ |

Having a national park so close to home is a blessing. There's nothing we enjoy more as a family and hiking on the weekends when we find ourselves with a block of time. It's worth getting the annual pass if you plan on visiting more than once. It's gorgeous and fun and can be whatever you make of it. If you do the Billygoat Trail wear proper footwear and know that the parts of it are really difficult but doable by anyone in reasonable shape.

Fun, challenging hike along the Potomac River

By JWUSA |

The hike has some challenging parts - best to wear hiking or non-slippery shoes for some parts that require climbing. Beautiful views of the Potomac River.

Rugged trail

By 1101Traveler |

The Billy Goat Trail offers stunning views and a strenuous climb on the Maryland side of the Potomac River. This is a rugged trail, perhaps best tackled with a guide or someone who has already hiked it. Dress for the season. Carry water. Wear rugged shoes.

Public safety hazard!

By DMWW12 |

Hikers are constantly getting injured on this trail, typically requiring heroic rescue efforts by first responders. Stay off this trail unless you are experienced and appropriately equipped!

Walk carefully!!!!my niece fell 80' into the Potomac last week. She survived. Such a beautiful place but focus on more than the beauty.

Rocky Fun

By goneagain2 |

Several friends hiked Billy Goat A trail. The hike began on the C&O trail with a brief stop at the Great Falls Overlook. The views were beautiful of the Potomac, rushing water and rocky areas. Billy Goat is properly named; rocky, uneven, gaps, and wonderfully scenic. Then there is the rockface. We climbed up which in my opinion appears easier than climbing down. Photos also make it look more difficult than it is, just go slow and carefully find hand and foot holds. Great area and great hike.

Great Way to Experience the Potomac River

By Paula A |

The triail is a 1.75 mile loop below the falls. If it's hot, bring bottled water, use the facilities before you start, and wear good shoes. The hike is rigorous if you are not an experienced hiker as you spend most of the time climbing through and up or down large rocks with deep crevices between them. The reward is the incredible views of the Potomac, the change in topography from rocks to sandy beaches and inlets, and the hike itself, which is fun! During tourist season (summer, school vacations) it's much better to hike on a weekday as weekends are so crowded, making the experience less fun as there can be a wait to climb or descend the rock wall, the most dramatic part of the trail.

Nice trail

By Shadi A |

Took my 8 years daughter onto the billy goat trail, she had fun walking on the rocks and looking over the water.

Some parts of the trail was closed due to some work but the open track is enough to let the explorers out of children.

Recommended when visiting the great falls.

Wonderful hikr

This trail is just wonderful, lots of wild nature, very close to the Potomac river, some rock climbing but well manageable!

Hard to believe that this much "nature" is within a bike ride. easy car drive or long hike out of the City. An incredible natural resource we should all enjoy and preserve

Hiking

By Naren S |

Went hiking with friends on the trail. It is a good one time experience . The rocks can be slippery do I recommend wearing appropriate shoes for hiking . The trail is part of the C&O canal hike and is quite scenic. Do not go when it has rained because it would be extremely slippery at that time

Great hike with good views of the river; no dogs, bring water!

By Elle P |

I finally hiked Billy Goat Trail A after many visits to Great Falls Park. Trail A is the most athletic of the hikes available and there are no dogs allowed (for good reason, unless your dog knows how to rock climb).

To access section A you can park in two different places. If you are coming from Maryland, park at the Old Anglers Inn. Do NOT park in an illegal spot on the road. Go to a real parking space in the lot. Many people have recommended getting there before 10am to get a spot. That's great if you're an early riser, which I am not. The 8am-ers have to finish the trail at some point and leave. I was able to park 2 cars in the lot at noon with no problem. Be patient, someone will leave! If you are coming from VA, park at Great Falls Tavern. Both of these locations save you the $10 park fee. There is a restroom as well.

From the Anglers Inn, you will enter the trail and head to the right. My recommendation is to start the trail at the stop gate entrance (closer to the VA side). There are several access points to the trail before that...but don't take them! No matter what, you will walk on a flat path next to some still water for about a mile-your choice whether that is at the beginning or end. The hike is better when started from the stop gate as the rock scramble on this hike going up is much easier and more fun. Everyone is annoyed at the folks coming down the opposite direction.

My friends and I are pretty athletic and we stopped and took a lot of photos. Total time was 2.5 hours door to door. I recommend bringing water and something to carry it in when you need both hands to climb the rocks! As far as difficulty- if you're a west coast hiker, this is nothing. If you're new to hikes, it could present a challenge!

Beautiful!!!

It's like being out and far away from any city. Great views of rocks and waterfalls. A fantastic way to get fresh air, exercise and outdoor therapy.

4.7 glorious miles including rock scrambles and breathtaking Potomac views

By EileenUSA |

Billy Goat Trail A is not an easy hike. Make sure you wear shoes with treads and bring plenty of water and some snacks for mid-hike refueling. We went early (8 a.m.) on an August weekday. There were absolutely no crowds, but halfway through we were dripping with sweat. There were 7 of us, all athletes, and it was a workout. There are also treacherous stretches, so take special care with children and anyone with balance issues or a fear of heights. All that said, this is a glorious 4.7 miles with breathtaking views. We couldn't stop taking pictures. Read up on the C&O Canal before you go; it makes for a more meaningful experience.

Awesome Hike and Rock Scrambles

By Ron Harris |

I did Section A (Billy Goat Trail) early morning @730am September 30, 2021. Only a few cars in the Visitor Center Parking Lot. Nice cool cloudless morning and no one on the trail.

The trail was moderately difficult. This is subjective as it depends on your fitness level.

I had a great time on the 1.7 mile rocky section; especially the climb up the cliff. Outstanding!

Wear a good pair of hiking shoes or boots. Took a 700ml Smart Water bottle and a light snack and it was more than enough. Just pay attention to the blue blazes. Some are faded on the rocks.

Spectacular Hidden Gem

By ReallyMeC |

This is a favorite. The trail is challenging enough to get your heart beat up (going down a section on all fours because it's that steep) but not so challenging that it's intimidating. The views along the river on top of huge rock formations are phenomenal. The walk back along the canal is flat and allows you to recover and let your mind wander. Amazing to be this immersed in nature so close to the busy city. Treat yourself to a beer, sandwich or meal at the Old Anglers Inn near the entrance. Rest rooms on the parkland site. Pretty decent parking availability if you arrive early enough. Bring some water for the hike. And enjoy!

Billie Goat Trail - Section A

By DottoWest |

National Park!!! Great trail. Well marked with blue blazes. Roots, rocks, and beautiful views. Recommend bringing water to drink. Take your time and enjoy.

If you are not much into being a billie goat, there is a GREAT FALLS Overlook trail that is stroller, wheel chair, and knee friendly as well as the C&O Canal tow path.

Best hiking in DC area.

By Rezinsky |

Three are 3 trails: A, B, and C. A is most difficult. C is easiest. All provide great view of Potomac river. A has a few amazing on top views. If you are lucky, you see Nationals Guard choppers fly through the gorge. You actually see choppers blades from the top.

Kayakers are always amazing to see when it has rained a lot and water is high and rough.

Go have a blast with your family and friends. You won’t find any better place than this in Washington DC area.

Bring your hiking shoes

By Fran S |

So close to DC, it's a great feeling to get out on a hiking trail along the mighty Potomac River and feel like you are worlds away. The trail is rocky, with some climbing and descending on uneven terrain. Even on a cold day, locals and visitors alike can be found on the trail. Peek out at the river and you may also see kayakers running the rapids.

For Those Who Can Climb Like A Billy Goat

By Dena D |

I have been on this trail many times and tend to visit when I want to get a good workout for all of my muscles. If you want to go to the Falls, this is not the trail, but if you want to climb up and down and all around, then you are on the right trail. If you park at the lot near the Old Anglers Inn it is free and the closest to the trail. You can get a beer afterwards in the beer garden at the Inn. l.

Been hiking the Billy Goat Trail for many years —- always fun, full of people of all ages, with varying degrees of difficulty and great views.

Great trail for city folk

By SirShanman |

Very nice trail, class 1, can be done as a loop. Parking fills quickly. Bathrooms available.

Trail markers easy to find and reliable.

Great for kids of any age. There are stroller accessible portions nearby - but Billy Goat trail itself is not stroller friendly.

Great trail run training trail.

Perfect for family or grown ups

By Moblaney |

This is a beautiful rocky place to enjoy nice views, peaceful surroundings and commune with nature. When my kids were teens a few years ago we used to come here because when we were climbing they would " talk " . When they were elementary age, it wore them out and made them feel proud. This is not a place for the frail or handicapped. It is easy to stumble. I have seen people climbing with babies in Baby Bjorns but I don't recommend it. Don't bring great grandma unless she's in good shape. Dogs adore it but must be leashed. It's a great way to spend an afternoon except in rainy or icy weather

Great Views, Great Exercise

By Tim M |

A great way to get exercise while looking at beautiful scenery. The trail may be too challenging for those with physical challenges though. Follow the recommendations on the trail guide.

Great walk any time of year.

By Abash40 |

Energetic walk, beautiful scenes, water falls, wildlife - deer, historic sites including a lock from the old canal days, easy parking. Crosses the Potomac - rapids.

Fun and challenging

By Tinghua |

As a 50+ hiker the Billy Goat Trail is fun but challenging. There are some great views of the water and the Virginia side of Great Falls but you have to be careful with your footing. You must climb over large boulders in some places and jump down from others.

Beautiful and challenging hike

By pamelabD3964BR |

The Billy Goat Trail is made up of three sections - an A, B, and C section. All sections require a bit of climbing on the rocks. So, wear comfortable, climbing shoes and be in pretty good shape to hike on these trails. Absolutely, beautiful views of the Potomac River.

Awesome and beautiful

By Rebecca C |

The billy goat trail is wonderful! Definitely not a dog friendly trail seeing as you need to climb around rocks and down a fairly steep slightly difficult rock wall. But the views from this trail and the fun you have climbing and searching for the trail marking is fantastic. I would go here again in a heartbeat.

Good luck on weekends!

By MtJester |

I have no idea why I thought that I could hike the Billy Goat Trail last Saturday and have a peaceful commune with nature. Instead, there were so many people on the trail, in front of me and behind me, that I never lost sight of them. Not to mention the fact that everyone was yakking, shrieking and drowning out the bird songs. The only place that was peaceful and unmarred by humans was below the cliff and on the river- a stunning view with colored leaves and clear blue water. The last straw was a passing hiker who had a boombox strapped to his back, followed by a gaggle of giggling teenagers taking selfies and holding up the line.
This trail ( Section A ) is mostly moderately strenuous rock scrambling. I would suggest good grippy shoes for boulder hopping, and water - you'll need it! The many off-trail lookouts on the cliff edge overlooking the river below are easily accessible from the trail. If you want to avoid the crowd go when the park opens at am. Also, if you are planning on going there on the weekend mid-day, there is usually bumper-to-bumper slowly moving traffic going into the park entrance which can add unexpected time onto your trip. Crowds or not, the hike is fun and the scenery is beautiful!

Slightly challenging but well worth it

By Theresa D |

Parts of the trail are very rocky with a few steep climbs but totally do-able. Stunning views. Very family friendly. Saw some experienced hikers with their entire families, including infants. Probably not the best hike for little ones though as some of the trail is rough and very rocky - large boulders. A bit crowded but we were there on a saturday on a gorgeous weather day.

More challenging than expected

By Gary B |

What we thought would be a pleasant riverside stroll through the woods was actually a challenging and thoroughly delightful hike and rock climbing adventure.

A natural conversation with the Potomac River

By PacoCM |

For the intrepid hiker and walker, this gem on the Maryland side of the river and within the Potomac/Bethesda area is a walk into nature with rock climbing, beautiful vistas of the Potomac river and more. When not too busy (mornings during the week) it is a near perfect communion with nature. Great place to climb to the top of the island and bask on the rocks catching the sun as the turtles do on the rocks below you in the river and the canal. After a virtuous and exhilarating 3 to 5 mile trek, you can reward yourself by a delicious outdoor lunch in any of several restaurants in the Potomac area.

Make sure you go in the the head end!

By Kerry M |

LOVED this run. Only thing I did differently is I entered in from the exit side of the trail which made it tough at times to make progress, as the crowds started to enter in from the head trail.

Amazing views

By buchy123 |

Love this place. The trail can be a challenge (rocks, etc. ) but the toe path and "boardwalk" provide options for the more casual walker. I lucked out with awesome weather. The earlier you get started, the better - for parking and for peaceful experience.

Beautiful and challenging!

By MimiAdvise |

The Billy Goat trails offer a variety of hikes in different levels, sections A, B & C. I have hiked all 3 trails and they are all scenic, enjoyable and worth the visit. You should select your trail according to your skill and conform level and allow enough time to traverse the trail and back before sunset. The most challenging and to me, the most rewarding trail is section A. You should engage this hike only if you are physically fit, wearing the appropriate shoes and gear, confident in your footing, not weary of climbing or heights and it is probably not suitable for small children. There are frequent reports of injuries on this hike. That being said, I have taken my son on this hike numerous times without incident over the years. I find all of the Billy Goat trails exciting and I am eager to traverse them often!

I am getting too old for the A trail....

By xTruth |

The A and B Trails are great.....Give you a good workout...plenty to see and keeps you on your toes.......B trail is our family's go to local trail for a quick hike....

Excellent Views, Nice Trails

By NACview |

Its a leisurely and worthwhile trail. It is not too difficult but just enough of a challenge for the weekend's outing.

Commune with nature a skip and a hop from the nation's capital

By FJGonzalezG |

This is one of our favorite local outings, since we live in nearby Carderock. We regularly see Great Blue Heron, owls, geese, ducks, and once we saw a beavers. (You can see their marks on trees along the trails.) The river, whether quiet or roaring, is always a great sight.

By enlarge the trail is well-marked with light blue blazes and has three sections: Section A of the trail traverses rough and rocky terrain, including a steep climb along a cliff face along the Potomac River's Mather Gorge. At another point in the trail, hikers have to scramble over and around huge boulders. Sections B and C are less strenuous. Section B requires only one brief scramble, and section C has none.

The three sections of the trail do not connect directly with each other, but are connected to each other by the towpath along the C&O Canal. From time to time, one or more of the sections are closed due to flooding.

Section A can be accessed from the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center. Section B and Section C are best accessed from Carderock, Maryland. All sections of the trail are free, although an entrance fee is charged when entering and parking near the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center. No fee is charged when parking near Carderock.

Dogs are not allowed on Section A, nor on Olmsted Island (Great Falls Overlook), but are permitted on a leash at all times everywhere else in the park.

Love this place!

By keerstn |

Great trail, great day, fun experience. This is not your typical walk on a bike path - so be prepared. I wanted to take my dog and when my friend advised against it, I didn't understand. NOW I do. Don't take your dog unless it's used to climbing boulders! Great time.

Great hiking trail

One of the area’s best and most senic trails. Parts are a little rugged, but you can shorten it to avoid.

Best Hike Ever!

By violet k |

Hands down the best hike in the DMV. I have hiked this trail 4 times and very time I find MIT breathtaking and worth every bit of the two hours! There is a cliff you have to climb but worth every bit.

Amazing hike along the Potomac

By SoraciSauce |

This is a great hike with beautiful views along the Potomac river. It has some true rock climbing so be prepared to be on all fours. There is a 50 ft wall at one point. I would not recommend it for anyone elderly, and dogs are not allowed on the trail along the river. There are too many rocks, and several parts where you really have to scramble. The entire circuit can run over 7 miles, or there are 2 other options for shorter hikes. All in all, be prepared for a great workout that will go by fast and be very enjoyable. There is easy parking across from the Old Angler inn, and a proper bathroom available.

Great Hiking Trail

By srldiver |

I did the Billy Goat Trail - A. It is one the most scenic trails that I've been on, but it's not for the faint of heart. It's an intermediate level trail with a decent amount of elevation variation which gets the heart pumping. Overall, It's not too bad with a few rock scrambles where you'll be on all four. Definitely one of the best trails in the area and you won't regret it.

Spectacular views on Potomac

By Rainer Schroeter |

Extremely nice trail with challenging parts where you really have to climb. Please make sure you have proper shoes on and enough water, specially in hot summer days.

By LadyAboutTown |

The Billy Goat Trail is just that, something that takes careful walking. It's in a great location and it's a lot of fun to take the trail and enjoy the views.

A fabulous and beautiful challenging walk.

By prontoeli |

The trail is winding and rocky. Suitable for billy goats and agile hikers. You are walking along the Potomac river, in one of it's most majestic and powerful sections. The trail is challenging; there are many parts where you need to concentrate on where you are placing your feet. A great workout in a beautiful place. Make sure you take the time to walk the easy trail to the falls afterwards - they are not to be missed.

One of my Favorite Hikes

By Jeff P |

I grew up on this trail. My father would bring me and my brother to hike this trail frequently as a child and I continue that tradition with my kids. The trail has become its own worst enemy because it has become so popular. I would not try and hike it on a weekend or you will literally find yourself in a conga line of hikers on the trail. Park in the parking lot by the Old Anglers Inn and walk north on the Burma Road. Cross the bridge and you will find yourself at the trailhead. Follow the trail south and you will exit the trail at the wide water on the canal. Walking south will bring you back to the parking lot. Bring water. The trail has a 50 foot traverse up a rock face that is challenging to some.

A Challenging Hike with Rock Climbs and Water Views and Serenity

By josephci |

This is a lovely and rigorous hike off the C & O canal. I've done it several times and experienced a scrape or two, but each time was a positive experience. If you have bad knees, I would not advise doing some of the climbing that's necessary. Walking along the canal trail is very lovely and invigorating itself. The Billy Goat Trail will raise your heart beat!

Craving Wilderness in Washington

By nathancyoung |

The Billy Goat Trail comprises three major sections, A, B and C. A, the westernmost section is about 1.5 miles in length and is by far the most challenging and the most crowded. It contains stretches of bouldering, and crevices that present sufficient challenges that dogs are banned. This section may be most easily accessed through the main Great Falls National Park parking lot. Persons with limited mobility or fitness should be extremely cautious. It is definitely an adventure. On one occasion I have seen fresh bear tracks in the sand along the river.

Sections B and C, while still challenging, are dog and children friendly. With the frequent occurrence of unleashed dogs, children should be prepared for bouncing canines. Each of these trails hugs the river, offering beautiful views, if not the spectacular rock cliffs available on section A. On weekdays and winter weekends, you may be all alone. There will be no indication you are in a city.

By Leslie B |

Fun. Easy walk with great scenery. not too crowded, stopped for a brief lunch. Plenty of great opportunities for photos.

This is a great trail hike - my sister just had her wedding nearby and arranged a hike there for guests staying nearby. You need to wear good walking shoes (there are some tricky parts, like rock hopping) and hikers should be in decent shape (esp. if the weather is warm) - bring sunblock and water! A fun excursion for couples or groups/families.

Billy Goat trail offers hikers deeply panoramic vistas overlooking the Potomac Tiver at various places that are simply stunning. There are a few rocky challenges here and there but nothing a basic to intermediate hiker can’t handle. Potomac is located in what is often called the world’s greatest urban wilderness. And it sure feels like your sons away from the DC trips when you’re alone here. Pure heaven.

A Deceivingly Tough Hike Up and Over and On The Rocks

By Lee F |

Don't be turned off by the warning sign unless you're totally missing the Billy goat gene. Just go slow, be careful, and follow the blazes. You'll have a lot of company. High fives and a cheer when you finish. I went with my 70-year old younger sister, she loved it.

There isn't much elevation gain, it's just a mile or two of climbing up and over and on boulders. Helicopters and river rafts patrol the area if you do run into trouble. We were told that sprained ankles happened.

A Washington Insider's Workout Experience

By Ronald S |

Sturdy, non-slip hiking, running, or walking shoes a must. Also, dress and pack very lightly for this exhilarating, but lengthy workout. You need both hands free for balance and climbing over rocks, etc. Whatever you do, never wade into the water even a few inches off-shore. Take water and a fitness snack or lunch. We typically stop mid-way on the small sand beach to rest and have a snack/bite to eat, unless the water is too high. Personally, I prefer starting from the north end of the trail, up farther away from the parking area, because then you get to climb up the rock-face, cliff path at one point, rather than down. Kids love this, but they need to be able to climb on their own and recognize/observe obvious danger points. And, yes, there are occasional, seemingly harmless snakes, so longer socks help the squeamish. This walk/hike/run is not for those who are out of shape. People do bring occasional dogs, but I wouldn't recommend this for small ones. The dogs love it as much as the people! A cell phone is also smart in case anyone turns an ankle or needs any other assistance, although coverage at this spot along the Potomac can be spotty.

Great Fun Hike

It is a wonderful oasis so close to the hustle and bustle of the city and suburbs. You never know what you will see, but you can count on great views of the Potomac.
It is amazing that it is so close and offers so much. It is a fun hike for the family, just remember to bring water and wear the right shoes.

Section A

By Les M |

The Billy Goat Trail has a reputation as one of the toughest trails in the DC area, so I was keen to check it out. It is inside a national historic area, so it costs $20 to get in for the day. The C&O canal that runs along the Potomac river was really cool to check out as I was there too. I know the Potomac just having seen it from DC. The Potomac river at Great Falls is completely different - its a fast moving, dangerous river so I was excited to get on the Billy Goat Trail.

The trail is marked with blue blazes, so its easy to stay on the path. The first half is mostly just dirt/sandy trail with some rock hopping thrown in. The last half of the trail is where you have more technical terrain. But it wasn't as challenging as I would have hoped. The "crux" is a 50 foot traverse up a cliff. It looks scary in the pictures, but when you get there, you can see its really a pretty straightforward scramble up a big crack. There is an exit trail shortly after the traverse that takes you back to another trail that runs along the canal. Or you can continue on to section B and C. There were storms moving in, so I took the exit trail and made it back to my car just as heavy rain started to come down.

The loop was about 3.25 miles and took me about 1:15 to complete. The park is very pretty and the scenery along the Billy Goat Trail was fantastic. Don't let the "rock hazard" scare you away!

Must see for all visitors

By Andrea S |

No excuse - lots of parking. There is a 10$ car fee, but WORTH IT! We went in the off season and there was a decent amount of people. I dont like crowds, but this did not bother me.

Walk the cement trail to the trail that leads to the right. It is cement and handicap friendly. It has many bridges that go over falls and rapids. We even saw some kayakers in class 5+ rapids! They were awesome to watch. Endless views, falls and rapids. I could have taken a million pictures. Even if your just passing through take 2 hours and $10 and do this. This is a special place. Laid out to be visitor friendly. Good for kids, strollers and all ages. Highlight of my trip.

Annual hike

This is one of our favorite trails in the area. Always due a Spring, Summer, and Fall hike. The seasons are amazing along the river. It can be somewhat difficult at times. Wer conditions are very crowed. We try to go off peak times. During the week or kid day. Sights are great and never know what type of wildlife you may encounter. This is a good trail for the whole family. Give it a try!!

Good morning for hike a little overcast. Great views of the river. Some tough areas to climb to hike. It took about 2+ hours to complete.

Take lots of water!!

By YourStorybookSmile |

I went here with my teenage son to have a relaxing afternoon and get in some exercise. You need to be decently fit (I'm not!) and sure footed as you climb up and over large rocks. Take more water than you think you will need. We drank all our water by the halfway point and it was so hot I had to stop. My son went back on another day with my husband and they were able to complete the hike. The C&O tow path is very family friendly both for hikers, bikers and walkers so you can expect it to be PACKED on weekends especially when there is a nice weather day after months of winter. You can pay to enter off MacArthur Blvd but there are so many small free parking lots all along the way that there is really no need to start in the paid lot.

My husband took me here on one of our first dates, so I can definitely say it's good for couples! You'll have lots of opportunities to hold hands and steady yourselves! Every time I do this trail, I think of great memories and enjoy the changing seasonal scenery.

Great hike

I have hiked Billy Goat trail for many years. It’s challenging but fun and great views. Kids can start doing it at age 8 or 9

Fun!!

Billy Goat trail is Awesome!! We did in one day the 3 sections and although was exhausting we were absolutly happy!!. Section A is super fun with a lot of climbing and rock hooping. Section B is nice too with some rocky parts but mostly trails. Section C is super romantic and secluded. All of them have wonderful views of the Potomac and there are some sandy part by the river to rest and refresh. We started the hike from the Tavern and we did the way back thru the Towpath. The Towpath is also very special and consider that it was around 7-8 PM the view of the canal and Widewater was beautiful. There are bathrooms between the Section A and B and also in the campground in the section C. We saw a deer, several families of Canadian geese, a lot of birds and ducks. We started at 2 PM and finished at 9 PM. Go for it!!

Great get away, close to DC

Great Falls and the Billy Goat Trail is a wondrous place that is a short drive (or even bike ride) from downtown. It feels and looks like your out in the Appalachians even though your pretty close in to the city. The trees are awesome, the rocks and trails are awesome. You even see an occasional bald eagle.

Enjoyed the walk climb, great views, sunny day started cold warmed up quickly as we did. Lots of traffic going both ways. Loved the easy walk back to parking along the canal. Took about 2 hours.

Do not be decieved by the name..this is a difficult train

By ABLUE60 |

My only issue with this trail is that by its cute name and lack of warning, many people try it without proper equipment or experience. Several people a year need to be rescued of this trail because it was more than they could handle

What’s the Hiker density lately?

Can anybody give some information about how many people are going to billy goat trail during October days? I.e. how crowded is it there? Is it pre-Covid crowded or is it sparse now? I’d like to go but I don’t want the kind of crowds I saw at Scott run or Great Falls. Thanks !

Scenic Panoramic Views of the Potomac River

By Outbackdad |

Probably the best hiking trail within fifty miles of Washington D.C. Be sure to wear good shoes as you will need them. On hot days be sure to pack water. This trail goes up and down quite a bit. It goes along large outcrops of rock and along cliffs with unsurpassed views high above the river. On weekends and holidays it can be quite crowded. Allow up to two hours to do the complete trail.

Challenging beautiful hiking trail

By pthang |

It is about an hour and a half trail. Very beautiful scenery and well worth your time to go. But there a small steep rock climb a little risky has to be careful. Enjoy the trail

I thought it was a difficult hike, but I loved it!!!

By SharonfromPotomac |

There are different trails, A,B,C,D..the higher the letter, the more difficult. We tried to park near the Old Angler, but there were no spots so we parked further down. Entered the hike, and began the trail there. There was no rock climbing, just a clear path.

Awesome!

"Awesome!" That's what the two 9 yr. olds repeatedly said upon completion of our hike. Section A of the Billy Goat Trail filled our afternoon with photo opps, exercise and thrills. The trail is occasionally strenuous and seeing the 50' wall almost caused me to about face... but I didn't. For a 60ish woman, getting to the top was a wonderful experience. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water. I highly recommend it.

Baaahhhhhkkkk to Nature

A fun hike with great views, scrambling, stream crossings and nice trails. Such a glorious way to spend a couple hours with someone you like. Wear good shoes, take some water and a few nuts and prepare to enjoy one of Maryland's most scenic spots.

Great hike

This is a great way to explore some of the Potomac river banks. Trail is not for faint of heart, in some places actually rock scrambling at edge of river. Good walking/hiking shoes a must. Can get very crowded on warm days.

Hiking in the rocks next to the Potomac

By James V |

This is a lower difficulty walk or hike. It is beautiful and has some of the better views of the river. I wouldn't bring small children unless you are experienced with that hike Roth the kids gear and responsibility. Crowded as the weather gets nice and lots of ppl on holidays and weekends. Not a good idea after heavy rain.

It is very exciting and challenging

We have been on this trail 3 times. We enjoyed the experience. However, we did not go all the way when it became very challenging. On the third time, we went from the other side and stopped again and returned when we got to the very challenging point.

Hard work...but well worth it

By kbdelapaz |

This hike lived up up to every warning regarding its difficulty - but I would do it all over again tomorrow. The entire park is beautiful and the views of the river are spectacular. We hiked the "A" portion of the trail and found it very challenging - but very doable. We left tired - but very happy with our experience. Can't wait to visit again!

Very Good Running area

By JSCKDC |

This is a very good running area with wide trails and narrow more rustic routes as desired.

Recommned parking at the lot across from the old angler inn and saving the $10 park fee...

Great Trail for Mobile HIkers

This is a challenging and beautiful trail marked by many views of the Potomac River and lots of opportunities to go off-track bouldering. Do not attempt this trail if you are have mobility problems.

My favorite Washington, DC activity

By iblaurajc |

We live in the DC area and whenever people come to visit we take them on the Billy Goat Trail. My brother and his 4 kids, 9-15 came last year from Fla. They said it was the favorite part of their DC trip. They arrived yesterday for this year's visit and today we did half Billy Goat Trail A again (starting from Old Angler's and ending at the marker (2?) that heads back up to the towpath. It was about an hour and 20 minutes. The sign at that point said 1 mile to the trailhead at the falls. But it was 12:30 and we were hungry. Before they leave I think we'll park at Great Falls and hike the other half. I agree with the other comments - water is key.

Fabulous vistas, challenging trail

By Marcymar |

Living about 1 mile from the C&O canal, I have traveled over many parts of the Billy Goat Trail. It is gorgeous in any season, with fantastic views of the Potomac River and Virginia cliffs. The three-part trail sits on the narrow piece of land between the canal and the river so you can get on and off the trail easily. Some parts are very challenging and you can expect to have to use your hands to climb and support yourself. These parts do not allow dogs as they make it hard for other hikers to pass in the opposite direction. On a nice day, you will see lots of wildlife, including deer and turtles. This is a migratory path for birds. We have seen eagles, barred owls, great blue herons, blue birds, kingfishers and more.

Billy Goat Trail

October 2024

Amazing. I went to Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park, MD in October after I heard this place isn't too far from my home. I did section A and took me around 3 hrs. (only 1.75 miles one way including stopped a few time for taking a photo). I will be back there for sec B and C one day.

The trail isn't too difficult for amateur hikers - route sign is quite clear. Anyway there are some challenges along the route among beautiful scenery such as climb up/climb down, hopping, crawling or jumping. So make sure your body is ready and hiking shoes are recommended if you want to try and safe.

But they also offer towpath for people who only wants to take a relax walking. I used this path when I was on the way back to the starting point and it has nice scenery too.
