1 of 10 Best Attractions in Ludlow

Gorgeous pools of fresh spring water and falls with hiking trails that are great for snow shoe and ski. Very pretty spot.

This was a pleasant surprise. There are 3 falls and all of em are worth going to. It is a quick ride if your are in the Ludlow area and something to do. Great photos

Just took a quick peek at lower falls with kids during stick season. Not much to do outside of that and unmarked paths were not something I was going to tackle by myself with two little ones. You just park on the side of the road.

The hike wasn't rigorous at all. It was easy with our 5 yr olds and an infant. The trail from lower fall starts where there is a signage board of the park. The trail wasn't marked at all but one will not get lost as you keep following the river upstream. There were some parts of the trail where one needed to exercise caution but that was very easy. It took less than 30 minutes to get to the upper falls from the lower fall with stops along the way. There are three falls and not very scenic ones as described by some. (there is no view - I was expecting it to be high and overlooking a valley). The water volume was great but it wasn't clear I guess due to previous day's heavy downpour. There were several people with their dogs taking a swim. The area was not crowded at all. For just hanging out on the big rocks (basking in the sun) by the water fall and the swim area, the upper fall is better if you can get on the other side but since we had infant and small kids we could not go across to the other side. If one has time constraint and do not like to hike at all, you could drive till the road end and park the car there and couple of steps walk, you are right at the upper fall of the Butter milk falls. Enjoy

What a great place to take kids. Even a nice spot up by old bridge where it's not as deep for young kids. Can get busy but was quite and peaceful when we arrived around 4pm on a weekday.

Buttermilk Falls offers a scenic hiking area, with 3 waterfalls and plenty of areas to swim and even cliff jump near the bridge at the upper falls. Anytime a year Buttermilk is a nice spot to visit.

It was a pleasure to discover the Buttermilk Falls in Vermont. The water was low and there were ample places to put down a towel and walk through the shallow pools of water. I hope to return when there is more water flowing and enjoy the deeper pools and falls.

If you are within range of these and want to have a cool swim in one of the several pools or just jump off into the deeper areas ... well worth a few hours stop off and of course its free. Quiet'ish, beautiful, small, take your wet shoes if the kids don't like climbing over rocks in pools and beach areas.

been here many times and it is always a delightful place to swim and cool down. used to be a nice little secret spot but not anymore. still great though

Many beautiful falls and wonderful swimming holes. Nice trail meanders through the woods along the river and past many picturesque waterfalls.

Not being much of a hiker and petrified of heights, even I was able to navigate Buttermilk Falls ... Even in the rain! Such a beautiful sight! Not sure what the parking is like one nice day, but in the rain it was easy.

Nice walk with several waterfalls. Some great swimming holes, our dog enjoyed them all. Water shoes are a great idea as the swimming holes are quite rocky.

We went in January 2011 and really wanted the view the falls. We used our snowshoes to hike around the fall area, which made it much easier to navigate in the snow. The falls were almost completely frozen, and it looked amazing! I've seen photos of it in the summer (obviously unfrozen), so I was interested to see what it looked like in the winter. It's right off of rte 103, there was a sign for "Buttermilk Falls Rd) or something similar. Even though it had just snowed, the road was plowed up to the entrance to the park. I bet it would look great during all the seasons, so definitely worth a visit. Very short walk to the falls, so you can quickly go & have a look without needing to devote a lot of time.

These were nice fall despite the water being low due to little rain. The water was very clear. I can see these being chilly to swim in.

We were looking for an hour to kill so we decided to drop by the falls. The 'hike' from the side of the road was a little steep for my daughter, so we stood at the roadside and could see the falls fine. Took some very nice pictures and were gone in ten minutes.
Like I said - my kind of attraction.

This is a great spot for a quick little hike. I did see several people swimming, but I decided against it after hearing several rattlesnakes. Beautiful scenery, but don't expect to stay too long - the trail is short.

we enjoyed our hike into buttermilk falls, found the lower falls easy, then walked up to see the upper falls, could not find them or they weren't running, but the hike was interesting saw a quite a few washed out roads and bridges

This is a Norman Rockwell and National Geographics photograph rolled into one. Outstanding natural beauty used as a swimming hole. The white noise from the falls and rushing water, feels like the whole planet's gone away. Tree roots and rocky paths keep the visitors few. Quite an experience.

Had a great picnic between the two falls. The scenery is beautiful and the sound of the falls is quite peaceful. Easy to reach with a nice swimming hole/jumping platform from a big flat rock next to the falls!

Beautiful and easy to hike or walk. I could have spent all day lost in mother natures beauty. It was say to find but out of the wy Nd not crowded. We went in fall but would probably be really nice in summer when you could dip your feet in.

Owner of the Timber Inn where we were staying suggested we go see these falls. It was a very easy hike in & the falls were still running with some icing as well. Great photo opts :)!

This is truly a lovely spot where you can just take a stroll along buttermilk falls road, or walk along the more difficult path right next to the falls. Near the end of the road is the swimming hole. It's deep enough so you can jump off one of the rocks if you are brave. Be sure you are safe and jumping in the right spot. If it is your first time there I recommend seeing where people are jumping. You can also sit under the falls which is very refreshing. The water is cold but very refreshing in summer and the kids seem to be able to stay in for hours. Bad reviews were related to low water levels but I have never seen this and I think they may not have been to the swimming hole as I think that is never too low to swim. If you want a good hike, you can reach the Catamount trail, just up a hill near the old bridge.

Lovely and easy to walk. People were actually swimming in the water Wish I could!
easy walk from car and we are moderately healthy 60 = year olds.

We visited in July, and did not expect to see much water flowing ( for the time of year), but with all the rain this year, it was impressive. The lower and middle falls were more accessible than the upper falls, and presented good viewing and photo opportunity. The Upper falls require an agile climb down from the street/parking area, but for us it was worth the effort; taller falls, more water, more photo ops.

Off the beaten track. Mostly locals go there. Great for a picnic and to get your toes wet. Very pretty especially in the fall as the leaves are changing.

The falls are just a short hike from the Okemo State Forest sign which is towards the end of Buttermilk Falls Road Turn - just north of the center of Ludlow off Rt. 103. The area is very picturesque and easy to access even for inexperienced hikers.

This was an easy hike for the older set. We were here for the fall foliage. This beautiful walk to and around the falls was a nice addition to our trip.

The friends we were visiting took us to Buttermilk Falls to see the falls and the state forest there. It was a great attraction and fun to climb on the rocks to get to different areas of the falls. Some more adventurous people were diving off the rocks into the pools by the falls!

We were in VT for a few days during extreme heat. We spent quite a bit of time here with our kids and dog cooling off. The area is very scenic and it was so much cooler here.

Lovely stream and falls. Easy to access. Several viewing areas so you can take a longer or shorter hike. Possible to swim in the pools beneath the falls.

Wow ! What a hidden gem ! We were visiting Ludlow VT and saw this fall . Kids wanted to enjoy water and this was a perfect choice for us . The water was colddddddddddd though. Ufff . Very cold . The first dip was tough ! Later once you get use of it , it felt a bit better .
Pathway was a bit crazy , in some places .it is about a 2 mile walk but we just went not too far : .. the lower and middle falls is also accessible from car parking lots outside . Parking is outside and sometimes you have to park 5-8 mins away from the falls . Not much of restrooms around . Lots of dogs in the water :) It was an amazing tint though ! Loved it . 5 stars !

Nice easy short hike. Falls are beautiful. Pay attention when driving to buttermilk falls as it comes up quickly. It was too cold to swim there when I went, but you can swim in a couple of the water holes. Nice easy walk. Takes about and 1 to 2 hours depending on how long you look at the falls. There is 3 of them.

Easy hike for any ability in summer. Can be a bit tricky with hills in the winter with ice. Be careful as it is difficult to tell where water is during the winter months. Totally worth going though! Fantastic swimming hole in the summer as well.

There is an upper, middle, and lower falls. Well maintained and the water was very cold!! Great place to hike.

These falls are close to town and easy to reach. The falls themselves are beautiful and surprisingly peaceful and uncrowded given how close they are to the highway. If your adventurous you can even swim in the pools that have been created at their base. I really liked the woods that surround them. They have a mystical feel to them with very little undergrowth. You can wind your way along the river without having to fight your way through the brush. That doesn't mean the area is easy to negotiate. The Upper Falls are tricky to get down to. Anyone who isn't sure footed may have difficulty. Some of the trees around the falls were in full color but were even more impressive down river. They are definitely worth your time and energy to visit.

I visited during the off-season, and even though it was chilly there was absolutely no one around (though I heard in the summer it can be very busy, especially with children). The falls are a very short drive from the main town, and are right off a small road, with a VERY short trail to the water. There is the potential to make this a more difficult walk, by going through/over the falls as I did, but you can experience the beauty without this.
I went here two separate times during my weekend here because it was so easy to get to!

Pretty falls; clear pools to swim in. Dog friendly. Crowded in spots. Parking along road. Clean area.

Easy to find, drive to the top of the road and park. Walk down a moderately steep trail to the little pools. Multiple levels for wading. Some people were jumping off the rocks into the water, not recommended. Wonderfully cold and refreshing water. Feels amazing.

Good place for taking a cool dip in the summer. Very refreshing / cold mountain stream with nice waterfalls and deep swimming holes. The paths are not well marked or well developed, but just park a the Okemo Forest sign and head to the water. Very popular place when the temperature heats up.

A short ride from the Inn at Waters Edge. However we had a hard time finding it as it's not marked. The GPS was a godsend as otherwise we would never have found it. We had to search for the trail to see them but it's not paved , it's surrounded by tree roots and trees and loads of leaves so you could easily miss the trail to get a view of the falls. I've seen tons of other waterfalls and these are just okay - nothing spectacular .

Nice little spot with a decent amount of space to hike. Lots of little waterfalls along the way. Enjoyable. Can get a bit busy so I'd avoid on the weekends if possible. Always a refreshing stop & really close to town. Pet and people friendly!

The top fall was breathtaking. The middle and lower falls were pretty. We enjoyed the sites and adventure we had.

The scenery and tranquility in this area are perfect to have a retreat getaway feeling. The hiking is not hard and the falls are worth the trip.

Nature at its best! Beautiful fall with nice hiking area. Best place to be with kids for relaxing and having sone fun. The fall and the second "pool" is awesome. Highly recommended

Amazing! So happy a local told us about this place! It was wonderful! The water was a little chilly, but we enjoyed hopping rocks and taking in the scenery!

We’ve been to Buttermilk several times. The last few visits have not been great. Lots of people drinking and rowdy. And twice we’ve had the same male watching our group of young girls. We left immediately. Okemo should keep better watch.

Easy hike, beautiful scenery. The falls were not spectacular but very beautiful. This is an easy hike with no definitive trails. You can just go at your own pace and make your own path. We were fortunate it was a gorgeous spring day when we visited.

The falls are pretty but, not well marked and with no real parking available. Be careful with GPS instruction as the road has been blocked, off.

I am serious. It is off a beaten up road but you can get to it by car. I believe hurricane Irene had alot to do with this paved road getting torn up. But, buttermilk falls is so delightful, peaceful, and serene. Don't miss it. I love waterfalls.

As we were staying near Ludlow, I had put this on our schedule as a "check it out whenever time permits" item. We drove back after visiting some places to the north, and were passing this around 4 p.m. so we checked it out. This was in early October and the sun was just starting to go down. Though it was pre-dusk, it would be better to visit this site in full sunlight.
There are 3 separate falls (the creatively named upper, middle, and lower). You access them from the main highway via a side road that starts as paved but soon becomes (good) dirt/gravel. The total length is less than 2 miles. You first get to a wide spot / parking area from which you can access the middle and lower falls. A trail leads down a hill where you must choose which falls to visit.
The middle falls is impressive. It is probably the easiest one to access. The area from which you have the best view is a bit rocky, but navigable. It makes for nice photos.
The lower falls appeared accessible from a side trail that descended a bit more steeply. You can also see it from above (somewhat) without descending. It appeared smaller and less photogenic than the middle falls.
We then drove another 1/4 mile up the road (to its end) to check out the upper falls. There is a sharp short descent from the road to the top of the falls. It appeared to have a fairly large pool at the bottom and a flat dirt/sand area where some people had laid out a blanket for a picnic. The light was fading more so we skipped walking down the relatively gentle slope to check it out further.
If you are in the area and have time, this is a nice spot to visit. It is within 3 miles of Ludlow. I cannot comment on what the swimming is like, but I saw references to that online (during summers, I guess).

Nice place to walk to, but not grand in comparison to others. It's a good point to walk to if you are camping in the area.

An easy walk down to the falls. Pretty views and fun for the children to climb on the rocks and, apparently, good place to swim on a warmer day.

Friends and I stopped to just see this beautiful waterfall, very easy, short walk off the road to the falls. Kids were jumping off the rocks into the obviously deep water, air smelled of pine, what a wonderful relaxing place to take a picnic and read a book.

Great little hike, though do be careful the rocks can be slippery( I fell in!) local swimming hole. Clean water!

Buttermilk Falls is easily accessible off a side road from Route 103 near its intersection with Route 100. You can park your call just a few yards away, then duck down into the falls where it's shady, cool and gorgeous. Just listening and gazing at the falls is quite therapeutic and a great way to relieve stress. You can even swim there, if you like cold water. Further hiking is there if you wish. Neat gem.

My family and I make sure to visit Buttermilk Falls whenever we're in the area, especially during the summer. We love to swim and jump off the rocks! It was a little crowded, but since there are 3 waterfalls and lots of area to explore in between, it's not hard to spread out. I would recommend it to any family, with younger or older children. (It's not far from the Green Mountain Sugar House, which sells amazing maple ice cream. If you have time, stop there afterwards!)

Stopped by here while staying in Ludlow. It was an easy walk/hike to one of the waterfall spots. The view was great and relaxing. A great short trip.

Excellent hike. Beautiful scenery. Beginner hike. Wear bug spray. There is a beautiful waterfall at the end. Bring a swim suit. people sqim int it. The water is cold.

We came here with our 2 and 6 year old sons in July. After reading some of the other reviews, I was worried we would have difficulty finding the entrance path, but that was not at all the case...the cars parked along the right side of buttermilk falls road were a clear indicator! We stopped at the lower of the three falls and then worked our way up to the top, stopping all along the way to swim in wade in the water. At the top there are several spots where some older kids were jumping from rocks to the water below. My 6 year old loved exploring the rocky nooks and crannies that surrounded the swimming holes. The water was cool and refreshing and the setting was beautiful. It was also not really crowded at all, despite it being a sunny July day. Highly recommend!

We liked the falls even though they were low because of the lack of rain. There are three levels of the falls. All beautiful. I would go again.

Several nice chilly water holes, enjoyed on a hot steamy day. Kids enjoyed jumping off the rocks into the freshest water around. Very refreshing.

Easy to find, good parking, paths to all 3 falls, nice place to visit and dangle your toes in the cool waters, If you are daring, a cool dip on a hot day. Enjoyed a picnic lunch and the sound of the falls.

Easy to get to the end of the road from Ludlow. The path down to the creek is pretty rugged and it is hard to get to the swimming pool but is it a very beautiful spot. The falls are fun to sit and watch. Even on a warm August day the water was pretty cold.

There is parking very close by and it is about 50 yards walk to the falls on relatively level ground. My wife and I were up early and arrived at the falls around 8:00. Very peaceful and beautiful.

Photographers...a short walk from the road with gear..always a plus! Lovely cascades with varied rock textures and colors. Fall foliage time should make for lovely images...too early for our visit last week. There are 3 falls, upper, middle and lower...we didn't see upper but the other two are worth the visit.

Great swimming place in the summer, fun to jump off the rocks when its deep enough. It will be cold at all times, be advised

The falls are beautiful, but very cold. Great spot to pack a lunch and hangout for a few hours. Water shoes would be a huge help as there are a lot of rocks and they are very slippery. People jumped off the rocks, but the water isn't that deep so I wouldn't recommend it.

Pretty but not a hike. It’s a very short walk from the road. I don’t know if it’s because it’s summer but the falls weren’t very big. The swimming holes had lots of people in them. Too touristy for me. Not our type of crowd. I’d say it’s probably better for younger kids, ages 4 to pre-teen.

Too crowded with too many out of state cars- no one respecting the COVID virus- no masks or social distancing. Lots of younger kids all crowded together. Falls were very small - unimpressive.

very beautiful small waterfall...PROBLEM IS it's not marked. make sure you get good directions from someone before you adventure to go see it...well worth it thou

dead end and trails not accesible because of Irene

The walk to see the falls was not far at all. Simple for any walker. My 3 year old loves it!
The water was clear and fresh. To get to the falls, you just need to walk a short way using the roots as your steps. Very neat place.

One of the best natural spots in VT. If you like climbing and jumping off of rocks, do not miss this spot. It has many levels of falls and swimming areas. Not to be missed.

Very close to the entrance of Okemo Mtn Ski resort off Buttermilk falls road with limited roadside parking adjacent to short trail to see one of three sections of moderate falls. Need to ride or walk some distance to see the three distinct sections , top and middle worth the effort. Also walk beyond top parking area for more hiking on wilder side on Catamount Cross Country ski trails , entrance on the right 200-300 yards, think boots not sneakers if not skis /snowshoes gets feisty in short order for a nice hike

Beautiful hike through the trees while the falls are tumbling down the rocks. Many accesses to see the falls. Fun to swim there also.

This was a very easy walking trail (mostly flat) with 3 small water falls and a swimming hole. Very pretty scenery.

I made a special trip to see these falls. No real markings--thank goodness TripAdvisor told me to look for Buttermilk Falls Rd. and the Okemo Forest sign. The walk was very short--but also very steep where we parked (at the top of the road at the dead end). I agree better shoes than flip-flops are recommended, though my 11 y.o. made it down ok! The falls were nice, but nothing very special in themselves. The real attractions here are the watering holes to swim in. Nice to stop by if you are close by.

Buttermilk falls is a beautiful find off the main road leading into Okemo Mountain and Jackson Gore Inn. Walkable from Jackson Gore across the street, its truly a perfect swimming hole for all. Small waterfall on-site toward top of the hill. Easy walk- mini hike

This attraction consists of three small falls over about 1,000ft. All but the upper falls are easy to get to. There are deep pools that excellent for cooling on a hot day. The road to the falls is in tough shape, so don't drive fast!
Unless you plan to swim or picnic, plan on less than 2 hrs.

This a lovely spot close to Ludlow and easily hikeable in an hour or two. Surprise-able in its seeming remoteness yet right off the road. Bring your trunks and bath in the pools then sun on the rocks. Avoid going in black fly season (May/June) or take your bug spray (like everything else in VT). The teens may proliferate on a hot day, but fun to people watch.

Wonderful falls to hike on. We went with family members who are not experienced hikers or walkers and they loved it. Great if you have water shoes so then you can go in the water. Water is cold in summer, but that is too be expected. Will go again next time.

The hiking is tough, but the scenery is spectacular.

Very nice falls just off the road. There are three falls very short distance from each other ( lower, middle, upper) and plenty of options for a quick dip. Only issue I see with this is if you have kids is as usual with these spots it attracts everyone and with it the strong aroma of marijuana. Still worth the visit but something to be aware of.

Very small falls and water pool. Little hard to access for elderly or physically challenged. We actually fell asleep on the rocks in the sun with the sound of the water.

Very nice spot to stretch your legs, get a few pictures and enjoy a small waterfall. Very short walk from the parking area.

This views were great, but the water was ice cold! We visited in July and could barely enter the water!
So not for the faint of heart! There were plenty of kids who were swimming, but only for brief moments.

We started at the top and hiked through the sometime narrow paths from one fall to another. We enjoyed the experience and the beauty.

I'm glad we stopped but the parking was crazy, so we didn't stay. The rocks may be a challenge for someone with any mobility issues. Lots of people swimming or hanging out.

This is A Great Place to visit. When we went it was not really warm enough to go swimming, but I did put my feet in the water. The path going down to the Falls is a little steep. I was wearing Sandals and decided to change to sneakers to be on the safe side. It is just a short pathway. Once you are down there you can walk out onto the rocks. We Sat on the rock for a while, just soaking up the atmosphere and listening to the water. It is very tranquil and Peaceful. It is a worthwhile visit and it is free. You can't beat that.

I own a cabin on Okemo and have been going up to Ludlow for 25 years now. I heard about these falls from my grandparents as they used to go there many years ago. There are several different falls you can discover. Whats great about these falls is that after the waterfalls, there are usually a good size pond. They are relativly deep as well. The first falls actually has a giant rock of which you can jump off of into the water. Ive heard people say its too cold to go swimming but everytime I visit the falls I have to take a dip. After the initial shock you dont feel how cold the water is anymore. These falls are great if you have little kids as they can sit or stand under the falls and its also great if you have a puppy. I used to take my golden retriever up there with me and she would have a blast swimming.

Please note there are two entrances several miles apart. Entering from Elmira road gives immediate access to the main beautiful falls. If near Ithaca, do not miss this!

Off the beaten path, nice - quiet place to swim and relax. A few 12 ft to 15 ft high rocks to jump off if you're willing.

This was one of our best hikes in the Ludlow region, although a short one. The swimming holes made for wonderful places to sit and relax with the lovely waterfalls sounds. These are not large waterfalls and there’s not a lot of water in October but the fall colors make up for it. To get between the waterfalls you walk in the forest and I always find that better than walking on concrete paths.
As other people have mentioned, they are tough to find. We were able to find them by driving to the end of the road. We parked in front of where there is a walking bridge crossing the river. We walked back down the road and looked very closely to the left where there hidden paths people have used to get down to the river (not clear paths, but you can tell there’s been foot traffic in areas so look closely). There are several, some very steep and others not as steep. From the top waterfall you can then walk to the other lower waterfalls following the river.
We went on a Tuesday so it was very quiet.

Well, it's vacation week and our children are bored. First we started at Buttermilk Falls in Ludlow, Vermont. It's off Route 103 across from the Jackson Gore Inn. Go to the end of the road and park. You will see paths leading down to several waterfalls. There are different paths for different waterfalls. It's too cold to go swimming, but it's a beautiful and peaceful walk through the woods. Packed a picnic and ate on the rocks.

Good trip. We arrived at approximately 5:30 pm and made our way to the entrance of the trail. The trail was very easy and only consisted of a several minute hike before we reached the waterfall. The waterfall was small, however the environment was very relaxing and peaceful.
Tip: I recommend spending 15 minutes here if you truly want to see everything.

Very nice to walk thru the woods, climb rocks and dip in the swimming holes. The grandchildren really enjoyed it.

Great little falls and one can wade and swim around the area. It does get crowded but worth a trip to see.

LOVED these falls! Kids love going up and down and crossing the river when possible! Very easy to access from the road! Varied terrain for all levels.

a really easy and short hike will take you to a nice, cold and refreshing swimming hole. A few basins to choose from. Not too hard to navigate. a great way to spend a hot afternoon!!

Nice place for all! Couples, families. Saved us while looking for things to do with a toddler and teens. The teens enjoyed jumping off the rocks (too scary for me). You can relax and just sit on a rock while little ones take a dip. Shady and a little walk down to the water, a little bit steep so wear sneakers are decent shoes - flip flops are okay in water, but walk down - not so good.

This is an easy to get to series of swimming holes. We started at the lower falls and "hiked" up and around to the top falls. Kids and adults were jumping off rocks into the water. The water isn't very deep but is cold and clear.
Some families had brought picnics and others were just sitting around enjoying the warm afternoon.
We brought our dog (and kept him on the leash) who loved swimming in the cold water, too. There were a few other dogs there, too, all well behaved.

When it hot out side the falls are refreshing. I love this place year round. Nice easy hike through the woods around a few falls.

There's so many naturally beautifully sights to see in Vermont that it's hard to rate them as they are all amazing. However, compared to some other places we went on this trip, this was slightly less memorable.

Nice place to go swimming. Fun and pretty. You have to drive down a little road w/the same name and park where you can and walk into the woods just a tad to a beautiful hole and river to swim in

Quiet, beautiful area. You can sit and be mesmerized by the water or explore and walk on the rocks. Great place for peace and quiet and unspoiled nature.

My nephew from Vermont took us to this great swimming hole. It was very hot this year in Vermont and this was a welcome break. The water is very cold and the area in and around the water is very rocky you will be lost without some type of water shoes. There was a safe place to jump off a rock cliff into the water if you are able to scramble up the side. There is a small waterfall you can stand under for fun. Maybe hard to find ask a local.

the waterfall is very beautiful if you can find it!!!
It needs better markings and signs...for us tourists is hard to find without a locals tips! Thankfully we had Carmen, the castle concierge explain us how to find it otherwise you can drive and drive and look and still miss it...

We loved this spot! just a hint to the town, please mark this beautiful waterfall...it's very hard to find...luckily we received great directions but for all travelers that like to discover the area on their own would be almost impossible to find

Stumbled upon this watering hole in the evening. Perfect spot for a dip. The water was still very cool, but it was so beautiful we couldn't resist.

The falls were very easy to hike. They had different levels where you could swim and jump from the cliff. We had kids ranging from 9-17 in our group and they all had fun.

We enjoyed seeing Buttermilk Falls today. But we were lucky to find it. There was a small green sign on the main highway, a sign we missed and had to make a u-turn to see. Then there were zero signs on the side road to point us to the parking areas. We barely saw a board (out of the corner of our eyes) that was about 30 yards in the woods. That was the trail to the middle and lower falls.
The upper Falls are completely unmarked. We parked at the dead end and walked down the steep, slippery path to what turned out to be beautiful Falls.

Buttermilk Falls is one of the natural wonders of the area. Clean, refreshing and absolutely invigorating, it is a great swimming hole to cool off in. The water is cold and it might take your breath away but it is worth it!

I don't know if my kids will ever forget this place! They had so much fun jumping off the rocks that they want to go every summer now! From hesitant adults to scared little ones, everyone built up their confidence and had a great time!! Beautiful, and while swimming is widely accepted but not legally sanctioned, the park department maintains the area so well, its great! Make sure you drive all the way to the end of the road-I think the sign is purposely toward the lower falls, but the deep ones are further up. They built a staircase in one spot, but it is steep climbing otherwise for bigger kids. The lower area is great for the smaller ones and you are within walking distance either way. Will definately go back!!

Within fifteen minutes of Okemo Mountain ski resort you will find this beautiful waterfall, in the middle of a local forest. You can see it, and also swim and sunbathe, enjoying a bit of the Vermont natural charm.

The view of the waterfalls is very nice but there was no hiking involved. Takes less than 10 min to see everything.

We only went in the middle fall water, and even with a beautiful mid 80s Sunny day, the water was brutally cold! Must take a dip and very refreshing but scary cold at first. The larger fall is bigger with many more families and a rock to jump from.
The falls are just a few steps away from the road

Absolutely gorgeous. Very close to the road. Such a peaceful stroll (it's not a hike, about 3-4 mins max). Definitely worth a visit!

Buttermilk Falls is really easy to get to, has several jumps into the water - some a few feet others about fifteen feet. A great place on a warm day to take the kids. Good for about one to two hours but not much more.

My family and I regularly visit Buttermilk Falls. It's a serene and beautiful view. What a great way to connect to nature! Don't forget to explore on the rocks!

These falls are advertised as being a great place for families to sit, relax and swim. I don't think so. If you're used to visiting places in NH, you will be disappointed. It was a nice little area for my husband and I to walk to the "falls" where we met 4 senior citizens painting. Must have been a class and we thought that was a nice place to paint. We then walked around to find this swimming area but never did. The water level was low, very low for swimming. I don't know if it was an unusual lack of rain but I could not make out any area where you could swim or have any more than your ankles covered with water. It was a nice place to look at and take some pictures. There were even what my husband called, Buttermilk Stonehenge. People had stacked and created sculptures from small and med sized rocks. If I could post pics under this review, I would. I would not recommend this place for families or even to spend a day.

We stopped for a swim after reading others reviews in Tripadvisor. Thank goodness for the detailed instructions to find this place. But itis well worth the extra effort. The falls are pretty and empty into deep clear pools, perfectNew England swimming hole experience.take pick of the three pools, all are lovely

Very close to Castle Hill in Ludlow. Went with my family ( 15 and 18). Park on the side of the road. There are three falls. Seemed like the Middle Falls was the least crowded. Almost like our own pricing Swimming hole. Rocks are slick. Bring water shoes if you have them. You can swim in the pools by the falls.

Takes you back to the old days of the swimming hole. Bring your bathing suit and a towel and take a swim in the beautiful, tranquil piece of Vermont!

Great way to spend an afternoon! Hiking, swimming in water holes (very cold) and beautiful waterfalls 👍🏼👍🏼

We were visiting Vermont and normally when I visit places, I am looking for lighthouses.....so this time, being away from the coastline, I decided to look for waterfalls. ... what fun. We are not hikers, so I followed the directions from a local hiker who said this was an easy walk and his directions were spot on! ( I would love to give him credit, but I can't find the information) Take 103 North out of Ludlow, maybe 1.5 miles ..watch for a street on your right called Buttermilk Falls, take that right. Approx. 1 mile up on the right ( road turns to dirt and stone) watch for the sign that says Okemo State Forest....take the path into the forest. The path forks....to the LEFT is the falls, to the RIGHT is a basin of moving water. This is an easy trek BUT very buggy so WEAR bug spray! And kids can do this walk as well, it is not far in and with supervision kids will do well. When you are visiting, you will notice a number of "stone people" that have been created....leave your creation if you like, we did! This is not a huge waterfall, but it presents as you would think...with the noise and atmosphere of something greatly created....have fun.

The waterfalls were very pretty. Easy to climb up and down for beginners. Can picture it being an awesome swimming hole in the summer months. Just wish there was a clearer sign posted for the trail.

A beautiful location "off the beaten path." Bring your camera but be careful of poison ivy. Also, the name of the road leading to it is Rte. 100 north to Gun Club Road.

Very easy and scenic walk from lower to middle to upper falls. I would love to go back in the summer and cool off in the deep pools!

Lovely spot, had no idea that Vermont is full of waterfalls. This is easy to find and a lovely walk.

Really need location.. we visited Sept 16 and water level was low. Still a nice afternoon... wading vs swimming. With higher water levels would have been really great.

We decided to try and find the falls after seeing them on the local map of the area. Driving there we weren't sure if we were on the right track, since there aren't many signs to point the way. The paved road up the mountain turned to a gravel/dirt road and we wondered if we should turn around. But, a few cars passed us on their way down, so we pushed on. We finally came up to cars parked on the side of the road and we could hear excited voices coming from the woods. There's a trail sign for the Okemo Forest that we followed. But, mostly we followed the sound of the kids having fun. Wear your hiking shoes, but bring your water shoes and swimsuit. The Buttermilk Falls were pretty and they run down the mountain creating a lot of clear pools to swim in. So, now we know! And next time we'll bring our towel and get our feet wet!

13 members of my family, (Age 3 - 60), were there July 16, 2017, it was amazing. Would have loved to have been able to spend more time there. Nice little hike from. Would definitely do this again, and bring a picnic lunch with us.
You would probably want to be bring water shoes with you, for walking in the water as the bottom is very rock, plus they would give you better traction on the rocks.
If you're an adventurous person, check it out.

Hey people. I live on Buttermilk falls road. It runs through 20 acres of my land where my husband and I transplanted 40 years ago. Yeah it’s really pretty. Used to be a local swimming hole. Still is. Especially when people take their trash out with them. With the internet we get 800+ cars up and down all day. It’s a dirt road. We all have pets and kids and grandkids. So please drive slowly. There’s no hurry in Vermont. Just saying

This is a very small place but good time to spend in afternoons. The place is full of rocks and hence people need to be very careful during swimming. There is also a diving point but if you land in wrong spot you can be easily injured by surrounding rocks.

Spent about an hour playing around the falls. Must see. Only about ten minutes of walking each way that’s going slow. Very cool.

Unfortunately not much water flowing at the end of August, however, a pleasant walk in the woods, and still plenty of water for swimming in the pools. Can enter the trails from the road at any of the three falls. Very pleasant spot to enjoy the day or just take a walk. Not much else to do in Ludlow at the end of August. Enjoy!!

Nothing more beautiful than hiking the falls. Wear grippy water shoes and take your time. Go slow. A t-shirt or wet suit shirt is good even in hot wether as this water is ICEY. Great for dogs! Bring a towel and leave your phone and money in the car locked. All you need is a towel.

The falls are right off the road, just a short drive from town. Beautiful and easy to access. A short hike down. Well marked. No real parking. You have to park on the side of the road. But it is so worth the trip!

There are upper and lower falls that run along a road
You walk in shade on well defined path. Not long but charming

Cute little hike, very short but pretty and easy to maneuver for the lower abd muddle falls. Higher up us a little tricky if you are a Senior

This is a hidden gem up the road from Okemo mountain. Near the end of Buttermilk Falls Ed there is parking for either Okemo State Forest, or at the dead end as well. The waterfalls are beautiful and a ton of fun if you have a dog. Some great short trail hiking, but this area is mainly for the amazing water running throughout the Forest.

Great place for a hike or a swim! We traveled from out of state, for a first time visit two days ago. While hiking everyone was wearing masks. While swimming, obviously no masks. The place has three parts to it, room for safe distancing. We noticed a few dogs, always leashed unless swimming. Our group had a lovely time and would definitely go back.

With one exception, it is perfection. The only issue is the lack of signage and promotion by the state. It is a glorious spot and easy to get to (if you know where it is). Most states would have signage and advertise such a spot.

The road to get here is located right across the street from the Jackson Gore access road. Parking is on the side of the road. We entered through the lower falls and not having bathing suits, opted to hike over the rocks to the upper falls area. Though there were "swimming holes" all along the hike, the upper falls area seemed like the best choice. Definitely worth the visit for a hour or so. Just make sure you check out the message board at the entrance of the lower falls area before jumping in. High e coli levels are sometimes an issue and notice of those levels are posted.

My wife and I stopped by Buttermilk Falls on a trip to VT last weekend. The area is beautiful and charming. However, I couldn't give it 5 stars, because there was a MAJOR mosquito problem. Don't get me wrong; mosquitos are a part of life in the summer, and I'm from more humid climes (MD), so I wouldn't fuss about a bite or two. However, I literally got more mosquito bites in about 5 minutes here than I have in an entire day any other time in my life. I am glad I saw the falls, but can't say I'd go again without an ample supply of mosquito repellent. If you proceed with proper preparation, it is a very lovely place to go!

My kids enjoyed Buttermilk Falls immensely........ I highly recommend taking your friends and family there.

Great spot for jumping off rocks. It is easy to find and get around. It is right off the road. Be careful and keep an eye on young children

Buttermilk Falls are about a 30 minute walk from Jackson Gore Inn. The falls are maybe 200 -300 feet off the road. The falls are not very tall but the area is nice. On the upper falls people were diving off the rocks into the water below. It was humid the day we were there so were a lot of mosquito. Over all its nice but not a must see location.

I packed water shoes and towels for the kids. They had a great time in the water. The town checks the water every Wednesday.

This is a small stream with small waterfalls and a pool area big enough for swimming. The water tends to be cold, the rocks tend to wet. Be careful of young kids becoming too active in the area as it is too easy to slip on the rock and the pool is deep enough to drown in. If you want a lovely natural VT scene without the presence of tourists this is an ideal spot. But, beware, to swimmers - don't dive in - it's not that deep!

Very beautiful and very easy to get to. Just off the road. Great for people who can't walk or hike too far

The Falls are hidden down a small path. Just park at the end of the road and the path is just off the road. Very pretty, cool and relaxing

Beautiful summer spot, especially for the young crowd. Many different levels of pools and falls. Perfect for cooling off. Just don't be surprised if the teenagers don't pick up after themselves.

Great waterfall, awesome cliffs to jump, water temp is invigorating! Bring your waterproof camera and smile!!!

As described in other reviews, nice natural swimming hole, cold water, different depths, easily accessible, on the negative side, it gets crowded on warm days, toooo many dog poop on the ground give way to nasty smell with heat and humidity, rocks are a challenge to small kids to cross.
Best time to visit is mid morning to avoid the crowd and the nuisance by teenagers.

My teen cousin and I went to hike at Buttermilk Falls in July of 2011. From reading about it, I believed that the hike to the falls would be longer and more strenuous, but in reality, the falls at this location are nearly visible from the street, and the trail made getting to the water really easy. This proximity in no way takes away from the beauty of the falls, which were breathtaking. My 13 y/o cousin could easily navigate across the water to the rocks on the other side, and climb up the steep include to jump into the pool below on her own. We traveled with a person recovering from foot surgery, and he could easily (slowly) navigate the path through the woods to the water, but had some difficulty with the rocky beach. The current, rocky shoreline and slippery rocks in water would make it difficult if not impossible for a younger child to navigate alone. Our dog had a hard time finding places to step, but still enjoyed swimming and sniffing in the woods at this location. There is no sand beach, grass, or smooth water's edge, so you feel like a mountain goat climbing around on rocks....unless you sit on a rock somewhere, there's no place to lay out or sit. That being said, this is a teenager's dream swimming hole, and the forest around was great for hiking. There are more than one set of falls here also. The biggest is at the top, but if you follow the water's edge through the woods, you will come to other, smaller pools and falls...all with the same "rockiness". We liked this place so much, that we went twice. Everyone we met there was more than friendly, and the water was fine!
To get here, follow Buttermilk Falls Road to the end and park your car. The trail is not marked, but can easily be found...plus you'll hear the falls, and know where to go! My suggestion would be to wear water shoes to protect your feet, its REALLY rocky and slippery!

Pretty, fun but very cold water. Of course!!! there are 3 areas to explore, the lower, middle and upper falls. All with there own personalities. I liked the upper falls best. None are high falls more multiple levels of cascading over rocks of different heights with wading pools and deep pools. Don't miss this.

Not a large or dramatic waterfall, but river flow formed some pleasing S curves for photography. Nice winter scenes and looked like fund place to visit in summer with quiet stream to cool off in.

Beautiful, free, easy to get there, lots of space, clear water, but cold, but worth it to jump in. It was an adventure, our whole group enjoyed it.

This is a great place to go take in the beauty of the outdoors without having to do too much strenuous exercise. Quick to get to and really pretty.

It was rainy and no one was around. It was a quiet, easy hike. It doesn't take much time and worth a look.

We live in W. Mass. It took over 2hrs to arrive to the falls , we made a stop at the Vermont Country Store for lunch. Super yummy sandwiches, truffle cheese , nice area with tables and shade. We continue to the falls enjoying the views and on our way, some antique stores. Chester town had a couple of nice stores. Near Okemo we parked on the side of the road, there were plenty of cars nevertheless people seem to dilute, on the extension of the place, we managed to find a nice spot in the middle falls. It was completely awesome one of the best crystalline and pristine swimming holes i had visited this summer, there were little tiny fish. We hiked a little trail to the upper falls. It was crowded, with youngsters jumping from a main rock, and some families with their children, at some point a worrier mamma on the edge become a barrier, and was full of anxiety, as no one was wearing their masks, i feel pity as I empathize with the fact the 6 foot personal space was difficult to save when people trying to step around the hole, yet it was a must for me to cross, and she had to understand i needed to reach my seven year old daughter. My chil dare to make the jump from the 6 feet rock, my heart was pounding, she was exited, I scouted the area and give my approval, the hole is enough deep, yet children had to be very careful not to slip, I was waiting her in the water, some youngsters doing acrobatics and summersaults at the bridge cliffs, to much risk for my taste. We loved the place, it felt safe, it was a nice sunny afternoon. In our wayback we stopped at Brattleboro Grafton Village Cheese Factory to stretch a little more the legs as the hike was not great of a deal. I would love to return.

very cool area with some mini falls and places to sit or swim. a little hard to find and out of the way but that's part of what makes it so nice. not really any place for easy access to get in and out, so i wouldn't recommend for small children or the elderly. also went on a nice day in the summer so that helped.

Easy to get to. Lots of locals on a very hot VT summer day…as there should be! An excursion for us. Just north of Ludlow…Okemo area.

Beautiful and a must see. The falls were beautiful especially with the foliage. Hubby and I parked at the top and walked down. A few of the paths were pretty steep and rocky but well worth the effort.

A nice little hike though the woods ( on a path ) gets you to three nice little waterfalls with swimming hole right there so bring you bathing suits and towels and enjoy..

An easy walk off road short hike and well worth the effort. It is a beautiful, scenic area. If it had been warmer I would have dived right in!

Love going here. The rock formations are fascinating, and the multiple falls make for a handy shower if you overheat on the riverside trails, or a semi-private pool to splash around in.
This is not a place to traipse in sandals. Steep, and lots of tree roots to walk over.

Just like a postcard that you see of Vermont and very easy to get to for those of us who are not experienced hikers

Lovely place to paddle about in the pools and clamber up the rocks. Kids had a great time and dog enjoyed it too!

A wonderful place to cool off on a hot summer's day. We usually drive to the end of the road to the upper swimming hole, because it is a little less crowded, but one day we will explore the others. Our dog loves it!

Easy access from Route 103 with large boulders to climb / sunbath on. A flowing 23 foot waterfall that is 15 feet 9 inches high. the area is washed bedrock 90 feet wide ending in a short cascade and a large pool of water. Downstream is a second smaller cascade around a small rock island.

Five stars if you're comfortable with jagged, undeveloped rocky streams. I only put four stars as a warning for the young and elderly who may not be as comfortable with the approach.

This place used to be a locals secret, and how some of us don't mind sharing our beautiful state and sights for the most part but recently there has been overcrowding here, I used to go to this secret swimming hole as a child and tried bringing my children here this past summer but there was just too many people. There used to be maybe 2 or 3 cars but there was so many I couldn't even turn around. I know our little town thrives on tourism etc and I guess they were right you can't go home again.

beautiful falls. Went on a cool summer day. Nice that its not a long walk from the car. Wear good walking shoes! rocks and ground can be slippery

In the old days in PA, before it was over populated and over built, there were lots of places like this. Its a shame you have to drive 8 hrs to show the kids unspoiled nature.
This is not an easy access area. We did it top down which required minor rock climbing and lots of care. The gorge is beautiful, water clear and cold. No bears or snakes. Only negative is that the stream is dead, no trout or bait fish.

We enjoyed checking out buttermilk falls. Beautiful natural pools and surrounding forest. Only drawback is that it’s gotten a bit too crowded. Many families and a group of like 40 campers were tromping around. Not the serene family experience we anticipated.

My sister, daughter and I came to explore the falls when the others were skiing on New Year’s Eve Day.
It wasn’t much of a hike because the trails were snow covered and some were icy. Plus, my five year old daughter wasn’t interested in hiking. The falls were very pretty and the chunks of ice and icicles were beautiful.
If you aren’t a skier, check out these falls-or check them out after a day on the slopes. They are less than a five minute drive from Okemo.

Easy off road access with good swimming. Clear clean water with deep pools for swimming and relaxing.

A nice place to sight see. Nothing big, but had a few small waterfalls. Can't hurt to stop and see though!!!

Great place for adventurous families willing to traverse the unmarked trails. Best to ask someone walking out best routes in and which of the upper or lower holes best based on water level. We found upper better in late summer.
BEAUTIFUL AND RELAXING SPOT!
The waterfall is small but beautiful. Given the overly warm temperatures this fall, people were still swimming here in September!!! must see for sure!!!
