Views all the way

By Ian S |

This is a fairly easy trail, normal hikers will find no challenges here. It's also quite scenic and there are points along the way highlighting what to look out for. For the life of me I couldn't make out the ancient grain store (was that it way up on high?) or a couple of other highlights. The petroglyphs I believe I saw but, personally, I wouldn't go for any of those purported attractions. No, just go for the walk because, naturally, it's quite scenic with, of course, the added bonus of the falls at the end. It's 5km or 3 miles each way and you won't get lost.
Be prepared when you arrive at the falls for other people to be around. Getting that key angle for your photograph might require some patience.

Amazing Oasis

By RangerNate |

Surrounded by the harsh slick rock and hot canyons, this waterfall and plunge pool is a gorgeous oasis. Fed by the waters of Boulder Mountain it is a fun yet challenging hike in the summer.
Always wear appropriate clothing and bring lots of water, never go alone and watch out during the monsoon season when flash floods are common.

Beautiful 5 mile round trip hike

By Glen S |

Hiked here in the late morning and enjoyed the beautiful views of the waterfall and rock formations. This is a pretty easy hike except there are a few places that require going on rocks either up or downhill. There is also a lot of sand which is more difficult to walk in but the views are spectacular and worth it. There is a fee unless you have a US park pass. Be sure to take plenty of water because it is hot and you will be thirsty.

Beautiful hike

By jesmorgan |

We hiked the Calf Creek Falls trail in December and while it was cold, it was still an amazing hike. The views were amazing and we enjoyed seeing the pictographs and granary. The only thing I didn't like was the sand. Most of the hike I through a dried creek bed so it is all sand. It was like walking in the beach. We would definitely recommend this hike.

Very nice falls, hike and Pictograph

By Scott P |

I strongly recommend this hike to see Calf Creek Falls. We saw several people in shorts & bathing suits walking under the falls. Make sure you take binoculars or zoom camera to get a good view of the Native American Pictograph. Part way into the hike if you look closely across the swamp you can see the pictograph on the rock wall.

Go early!

By Mafonia |

We got here around 8am and had the entire trail and falls to ourselves. Trail is well maintained and easy to follow, though once the sun starts getting higher it's pretty much all exposed. Water was ICE cold, but quite refreshing just dipping your toes in.

On the way back we passed dozens of other groups headed in, so I imagine it wouldn't be peaceful at all later in the day. Parking lot was overflowing as well. If you're looking for privacy, get there in the morning and start when it's still relatively cool!

Beautiful Hike into Paradise-Lower Calf Creek Trail

By Dave7787 |

We got a tip that this hike would be worth getting off the beaten path for while traveling through Utah visiting the National Parks, and they were right on! It is just off the highway, easy to miss if you are not looking for it, and has a little campground attached. the hike is gentle along the creek that has been dammed up by beavers, so very lush in comparison to the more stark beauty of the likes of Zion, Bryce and Canyonlands nearby. As we hiked along the 3ish mile hike to the falls we were not sure what to expect, and when the falls came into view it was almost surreal or something you would expect in a movie. So simply beatiful and peaceful. The water is cool, but we had to get in and enjoy the whole experience. This is well worth the half day for travelers of all ages to experience, or if time permits, it would have been great to stay for a couple days.

Lower Calf Creek Falls

By Amber H |

Perfect 6 mile hike. Not hard at all, just distance. Make sure to bring enough water especially during the summer and stay hydrated. Once we got to the fall, we wished we had thought to bring a picnic but we stayed for almost an hour and then headed back. There was a warning for recent mountain lion sightings in the area when we hiked so playing music or talking loudly is recommended on the hike. We did a snake so be on the lookout for wildlife. Have fun!

Wow!

By Topdown77027 |

The hike of a lifetime. Great destination at the end of the trail, a stunning waterfall and cool pool. Great for bird watching, geology and exploring the unique desert environment. Gets very hot and you're fully exposed by late morning. Take lots of water...especially with kids along.

Always a breathtaking site!

By LVBrowning |

This was our third time hiking to Calf Creek Falls. Its a fairly easy hike with a good variety of scenery. We were visiting on Memorial Day weekend and weren't able to get a place to park until Monday. I'm so glad that we were persistent. The falls are spectacular.

Amazing hike, incredible views

By julie248 |

My pup and I did the Lower Calf Creek Falls hike, and I was amazed at the gorgeous views the whole way! Plus the falls at the end are other-worldly. It's a really beautiful hike with a good amount of variety in scenery.

Loved it!!

By SpyglassBeach |

Absolutely beautiful hike. It is fairly long- but the falls are totally worth it. I took my 11, 8, and 6 year old- and it was a hefty distance for the 6 year old. But if your kids are sturdy and you have the patience for it, they'll love it.

Lovely canyon hike

By D. Aaronson |

This is a three mile (one-way) hike down a progressively narrowing canyon. It has considerable sun exposure for most of the hike so consider some form of sun protection. Once at the falls, the temperature is at least ten degrees lower in that sheltered cove. It's a beautiful picnic spot and a fabulous swimming hole if you can tolerate the water temperature.

Hiking paradise

By Kathryn1956 |

Hiked lower Calf Creek Falls.....beautiful. Great little swimming hole. 3 miles in then 3 out....makes for a great half day hike. Highly recommend this hike in addition to others in the Calf Creek Recreation area.

Iconic GS-ENM Hike

By Chris L |

If you have limited time in this National Monument, do this hike! It's a great introduction to the area; if you start early in the morning or do it later in the afternoon/evening, you will be mostly shaded from the sun. Doing this hike in July, we opted for a 7:00 start and were glad we did. The trail was mostly shaded going out at that time. It's very peaceful and there aren't the crowds of other UT National Parks. The falls were stunning, the water clear and refreshing, the bottom a soft, soft sand. The hike back was a bit warm. Wear a hat & sunscreen, bring plenty of water. Most of the trail is either packed dirt or sand which can be somewhat challenging to walk in. I suggest hiking shoes or boots rather than tennis shoes. Toilet and water available at the trailhead.

Great...until the floods came!

By Emilou325 |

We had a great time. The waterfall is beautiful. However, it's a really long hike, so be prepared. We were at the fall when a flash flood came. Being Utah locals, we knew how dangerous being in a canyon like that could be during a monsoon storm. We had nickel-sized hail and the trails turned into a river. Luckily, we got out safely. Just be aware that weather in Utah can change at a moment's notice (the skies were blue when we first got to the waterfall and suddenly turned dark!). Pack lots of water and food. There are no bathroom facilities except for at the trail head, so be aware of that. The trail is sandy, but is a relatively easy trail to hike...It's just long.

take your flip flops!

By joemontana16 |

Just kidding, but about half of the 3 miles route (6 miles round trip) is on sand. We thought we were slogging along a beach. Not too much elevation gain so the hardest part of the hike is the sand. And I presume the heat if you catch this hike on a really hot day. Take plenty of water and you’ll be okay. The waterfall is not the most spectacular you’ve ever seen, but the colors are incredible. I took a photo that will most likely end up on our wall. You can easily stare at the falls for minutes or longer. The pool there is good for wading and swimming if you are so inclined (we saw a few folks fully submerge, but most were satisfied with just wading up to their knees). It’s cold water of course.

Not to Overlooked

By Oliver S |

With Bryce, Zion and the rest nearby, it’s easy to overlook Calf Creek. Don’t. Little Calf is one of the nicest hikes you will ever take-challenging enough to keep you interested, but not unnecessarily difficult. And the payoff is unbeatable!

Drive from Escalante to Boulder will give you a thrill

By stonestacker52 |

We did the hike up to Lower Calf Creek Falls from the Calf Creek Campground. This is a nice hike to some refreshing falls along the river. Lots of birds and some pictographs along the way.

Afterwards we drove into Boulder. This highway ends up going over a hogback ridge with no shoulder on either side of the blacktop and a sheer drop on both sides. Was about more excitement than needed for someone like me who has a fear of heights. I let my wife drive back and it didn't seem so scary. Seriously, worth the drive unless you are totally petrified of heights.

Great Hike - Spectacular Treat

By LeftCoastSnapper |

Driving the Hwy 12 Scenic Byway from Capitol Reef to Bryce Canyon, we stopped to hike the highly recommended Lower Calf Creek Falls Trail. We were not disappointed. This is a perfect hike for those looking for the moderate level hike. The trail head is well marked, just off Hwy 12, between Boulder and Escalante. Some call the hike moderately strenuous, probably because of its length. The round trip hike is about 6 miles in and back. It took us about 3 1//2 hours to complete the hike. Since the hike generally follows the creek up to a fantastic waterfall, there is minimal elevation change. However, there are some stretches of very sandy trail which makes for slightly tougher hiking. The falls at the end of the canyon are a spectacular treat and you will not be disappointed. This is a “must do” hike for moderate level hikers traveling in this part of Utah and it was perhaps, our favorite hike of our entire 10 day trip through the Mighty Five parks in Southern Utah.

Trail to the Falls

By Carol A |

I agree with some previous reviewers that this advertised-as-easy hike really ought to be rated moderate, due to several uneven sections. That being said, it's a beautiful hike through the canyon--you can always hear Calf Creek, and there are lots of trees and birds. Along the way hikers can also view some ancient granaries and 1000 year old pictographs on the canyon wall, evidence of habitations a 6 mile round trip, so be sure to bring plenty of water. That being said, it's a beautiful hike through the canyon--you can always hear Calf Creek, and there are lots of trees and birds. Along the way hikers can also view some ancient granaries and 1000 year old pictographs on the canyon wall, evidence of habitation by the Fremont peoples.
The Falls themselves are lovely, plunging 126 feet into a green pool. Definitely worth the work it took you to get there! This is a great place to rest, have a snack and enjoy your surroundings before hiking back out. This is a 6 mile round trip, so be sure to bring plenty of water, apply sunscreen and wear a hat.

Favorite Family Hike while in Utah

By BAFutbol |

What a hike for a family with a 70+ year old mother in law, 2 young kids and my wife and I. Definitely worth it if in the area.

4-5 mile hike with moderate ups and downs over rocks, but also a lot of rolling type hills areas. Sand in a bunch of places made it a bit harder when it got hot. However, when you reach the falls, it is utterly amazing.

You come through an area of heavy trees with the creek on the right and then bam.. there it is a beautiful large waterfall with a gorgeous large clear pool on the bottom. Time to take off your shoes and get them wet. The water was cold, but so refreshing. Almost jumped all the way in, but only went in up to my knees... a bit cold, but a couple of brave souls did jump in ....
Everyone in our group truly loved the hike... got a little off-trail on the way back (not super well marked in certain places, but easily found our way back.

Hiking lower calf creek trail.

By Roe C |

The drive along SR 12 in Utah to Calf Creek Falls Recreation Area is colorful and has spectacular landscape. There is easy assess to the recreation area and this is the starting point for Lower Calf Creek Falls Trail along with other trails. Lower Calf Creek Falls is an oasis after hiking the desert terrain (RT 6 miles). On hot days this is a perfect pool for a swim. The fall is a photographers delight.

Wear appropriate footwear & carry water

By HK_Leesie |

While this is a relatively easy hike (no big elevation changes or technical skills required), the ground changes a lot -- from rock to packed dirt to loose sand -- and it can get blazing hot if the sun is out. Make sure to grab the hike guide when you pay the ranger/park fee in the parking lot. (Trailhead lot can get crowded. Go early. There are trailhead toilets.) Stopping at the markers along the hike and reading about each one makes this an interesting and informative hike. In August 2016, the guide was wrong (by about 3 or 4 stations) for where you can look across and see the Native American drawings. But, it was fun to witness people on the return hike making sure to point out to people on their way to the Falls where they could see the ancient cave drawings. Put away the smart phones and talk to the people around you! I wish we'd brought swimsuits for a dip at the falls. It wasn't warm when we started the hike and it was mostly overcast, but by the time we got to the falls it was blazing hot and we were jealous of all the people that thought to bring swimsuits. Because of the sand, we didn't want to get shorts and socks soaked and then chafe the whole hike back. We'll plan better next time.

Wonderful hike - go early!

By GreentreeMA |

We visited Escalante in mid-May, and this was our experience at that time of year. Even though it was too early to be very crowded overall, the campground was already full. We got to the trailhead about 7:15 a.m. and were one of the earliest groups to hit the trail. We were the only ones at the waterfall and spent about 20 minutes there, resting and enjoying the beauty. Other hikers appeared as morning wore on and when we left about 11:30 the parking lot was full. One of the other advantages of going early is that the bird watching is great going out. We kept stopping to pull out our binocs and bird book. But there were few birds on the way back, so they’re in hiding by mid-morning. Trail seemed less shady on the way back and it was definitely warmer. No bug spray needed but do take sun cream, a brimmed hat, and a lot of water. The NPS recommends a gallon per person per day so carry appropriate amounts. This was one of our favorite hikes in southern Utah, you won’t be disappointed. Just start out early for the best experience.

Amazing!

By MAR4524 |

Every step of the 6-mile RT hike was surrounded with the most amazing scenery. Fairly easy hike with sandy trails and scattered elevations. The ending waterfall was magnificent. We stopped for sandwiches at the mercantile grocery that served as a perfect picnic lunch reward. Take your time to really see as much as you can. And keep an eye out for the petroglyphs.

Between Escalantae & Boulder

By circusgurl |

This is an excellent place to stop and hike when traveling between Escalante and Boulder. It's only about 5 minutes past Kiva Koffeehouse so stop there to fuel up before of afterwards. I think the hike was about 4 or 5 miles, partially in the sun, then in the shade and then you follow a riverbank with beaver homes and the grand finale the waterfall. Well, worth the time.

One of our favorite hikes

By Marianne D |

Nice easy hike. Start early before the crowds. It takes a few hours. We loved the waterfall. It was beautiful and looks to be a great place to cool off later in the summer. Restrooms in the parking lot. You have to walk in some Sandy spots and that was the most strenuous part of the hike. Petroglyphs on the sheer walls to your right walking in. I think marker 8.
Well worth your time!

Beautiful waterfall

By janeP5724CD |

My kids (10 &12) enjoyed the guided hike with 14 spots labeled along the route that explained special features of each location. It kept them occupied and interested throughout the hike.

Great place, be ready to hike

By Snagadm |

Lower Calf Creek Falls is a very pretty place. The hike isn't too bad, but be ready with the right shoes and plenty of water. I would recommend brining a water filter to refill your bottles at the waterfall in case you need it. Otherwise, I'd bring 64oz in the summer. There is some shade closer to the falls, but not much early and then late in the hike. Plan on at least 3 hours.

Calf Creek is Wonderful!

By Steve J |

Anyone who has been to Calf Creek and the surrounding areas has found an amazing assortment of things to do, all exciting, some challenging and some just beautiful and relaxing. From the not-to-difficult hikes to the Upper and Lower Calf Creek Falls, where the swimming can be anywhere from bone-chilling to just plain refreshing, to the longer, more difficult and challenging hikes to the various natural bridges, fishing spots, scenic view points, you'll find it to be a wonderful place for a relaxing week, week-end, or a family reunion, it does the trick! Check with the National Monument Visitor's Center on the road to Bryce Canyon, at the exit of Escalante for ideas, counsel and directions/maps, etc. Get the information, some hikes can be very strenuous, even dangerous, especially when it 's hot!

Easy family hike

By Jie Z |

The hike is mostly flat and easy, the trail is well maintained. Some sandy areas but overall it was a fun, interesting walk through the wood, up some boulders, along the calf creek. I like the fact that they have trail guide that specify interesting points along the trail. It is very informative and also provides good resting spot. The fall was beautiful. Strongly recommend if you have 3-4 hours to spare along your drive up UT-12.

Excellent Stroll

By Catherine L |

A beautiful walk of Calf Creek to the lower falls is worth the three hours (or more depending on your speed and how long you stay at the falls). The trail leaves the campground and highway very quickly and relatively easy for all ages. Take the brochure with you to catch all the points of interest along the way.

A true Oasis in the desert!

By Della B |

This 136ft. waterfall is never dry. The only way to see it is a moderate 3 mile hike. It is totally worth the hike! The trail through the canyon to get to the falls is beautiful and Calf Creek Falls is stunning!

Beautiful hike

By LAAFood1 |

This is a beautiful stopping point down scenic route 12. Take 1-3 hours to hike the trail (just over an hour will get you to the petroglyphs or 3+ to the falls and back). The hiking is moderate but not to strenuous and absolutely beautiful with lots of different terrains. Don't wear mesh shoes unless you want them full of sand.

Lower Calf creek is beautiful

By Daniel1200 |

We hiked this in just 4 hours round-trip. The trail is quite fun with the different signposts to keep kids interested and looking forward to the next post. Very easy hike and partly in the shade in the morning. The final waterfall is beautiful and a good way to cool off in the summer heat (beware the water is really cold!)

Breathtaking!

By Ludo F |

Visiting The calf creek falls is definitely a must! They are absolutely gorgeous and the pictures don't do them justice! The hike is flat for most of the way and is a really easy hike for people who have kids! :) I highly recommend it!

Strenuous hike

By Harrison_Keb |

I am a 16 year old. This hike was through beach sand 90% of the time. The hike is 6 miles roundtrip. The waterfall is beautiful. The water was freezing cold and slam packed with people. I would rather have done some of the other hikes in the area.

The Hike was worth it!

By ellenc576 |

Started out a little late in the day, but the Hike back was cooler. Too many beautiful spots to stop and still make it to the Falls, so had to stop on the way back to take pictures! Beautiful Falls, nice moderate trail, lovely Hike!

Most Rewarding Hike

By Brendavig |

This is the most rewarding hike I have ever taken. The vistas from this hike are breathtaking with a glorious 120' waterfall at the end of the hike. It's approximately 6 miles round trip. It's a pretty easy hike, however, if you are going in summer, it's best to go early. The trail gets busy with visitors and red sand reflects the sun and it gets extremely hot. You can dehydrate quickly. Carry plenty of water, take your time and enjoy the sites. There is limited parking. We tried to take a stroller that was made for running but this trail is quite rocky in places and we ended up leaving the stroller in the beginning quarter of the hike.

Falls are a treat at the end of the hike

By J G |

A hike with a definitive attraction at the end is very satisfying, and the Lower Calf Creek trail offers that. It was recommended to us by several local experts as a great trail that’s not difficult for someone whether almost of retirement age as well as a college student. It is 90 minutes in, and mostly level, then the very pleasant falls at the end, and 90 minutes out. Nice scenery along the way — take a printed trail guide so you can read about the 17 numbered stops along the way.

Great hike, beautifil snakes

By Tom W |

Excellent hike, easy walking. A fun part is the chance to see a variety of non-venomous reptiles crossing the sandy trail. Beautiful garter snake on the sand. Wonderfully cool by the falls and young people swimming the cold water. A treat in the high desert. Campground not at all for motor homes of larger sizes. Great campground host.

Beauty all the way, not just at the destination

By J B |

We started out on the hike a little before noon, and there were definitely times that we were feeling the heat, but there is also a lot of shade along the way, so you can easily take a break to cool down a bit. As other reviewers indicated, there is a lot of sand, and I was one of those people who took my shoes off and walked barefooted during some fairly long stretches, because it was some of the deepest, softest sand I have ever experienced away from a beach. That in and of itself was a wonderful experience if you are someone who enjoys sinking your feet into soft sand.

The hike was not strenuous, but I do think it deserves a description of moderate rather than easy, because there are a few spots where I think it could pose difficulty to someone who doesn't handle climbs or uneven surfaces very well. It provides beautiful scenery all along the way, and you can hear the water along the way, which just builds the anticipation of reaching that beautiful waterfall at the end of the trail. Once you arrive, it doesn't disappoint. It's like a little oasis in the middle of a desert. Sadly, we had a storm roll in right as we reached the waterfall, so with the wind/breeze, and a drop in temperature even greater than what the water and shade provide, we were just too chilly to spend much time in the water. But we found a spot to sit down, eat a snack, and enjoy the beauty and serenity for a while before we started back.

We used a pack to carry our pup in and out--he's small and young--and we saw several people doing the same. It was fun to greet other dog owners along the way.

Parking is a challenge, because it's a popular spot, but the trail didn't feel too crowded. I would definitely recommend this hike, but be sure to bring plenty of water and something to refuel. I did pick up some trash that someone had left behind. If you go, please pack out anything you bring in so that the beauty of this spot can be preserved.

Trail with Pictographs

By Susan M |

The drive to this site is spectacular. Before you go, stop at the Escalante Interagency Visitors Center and pick up the trail guide. It is numbered and will tell you all about the native American sites along the river. These include a granary and pictographs. You don't have to go all the way to the waterfalls for great scenery --- the trail is varied and not difficult.

This was a fantastic hike that was highly suggested to do.

By Jeff |

This 6 mile round trip hike was very nice. We took off a little too late for the hike in the hot afternoon which was a mistake because my wife got a little overheated. Besides that my family loved the hike and would recommend going when it wasn`t hot.
When you get close to the falls it gets shaded (later in the afternoon) and cooler.
We spent over an hour taking photos at this place and it was one of our favorite hikes on our vacation.

A beautiful experience

By Thomas F |

The hike to Lower Calf Creek Falls is a classic in the area. It's about 6 miles round trip, fairly flat, but it felt longer than that because there are sections that are covered with deep sand. It was also very hot, even in late September. However, the rewards are great: a beautiful green valley, the gorgeous rock formations, an Ancestral Puebloan ruin and pictographs, with the climax the enormous falls. The end of the trail is shady and peaceful. This is a popular hike, and there aren't all that many parking spaces. For that reason and because of the heat, I would recommend starting as early as possible.

3 Mile Hike to an Amazing Falls

By Mindy and Roger A |

It is a 3 mile hike to the falls, but the reward is worth it! The falls is at the end of a canyon walk which is either an "Easy" or "Moderate" hike. There are sections of the hike with rocky slopes and other areas where you trudge through sand. Ultimately the effort is worth the result.

There is a $5.00 admittance which is paid at the billboard just past the parking lot. The admittance charge is waived if you have the "Senior" National Park Pass. Fill out the paperwork, slip $5.00 in the envelope, seal the envelope and slip it in the slot. If you have the Senior Pass, fill out the paperwork, include the Senior Pass number on the bottom of the envelope and slip the envelope in the slot without the $5.00.

If there is no room to park in the parking lot, the host volunteer will allow you to park along the entrance road as long as the road remains passable. There are "Flush" toilets at the parking lot and a water hydrant on the left as you walk to the trail head. Bring plenty of water with you.

Pick up the trail guide at the trail head. The trail guide will identify where to look for Pictographs and ancient storage granaries along the trail. Binoculars or a good zoom lense camera will help locate the pictographs & granaries. The trail to the waterfall is also scenic.

MAGNIFICENT

By TheHappyHikers |

The parking lot is quite small and it gets pretty busy down there, so get there early! Take plenty of water too. An easy almost flat hike along the river. Before you reach the final destination you will know you are near as you can hear the gushin water. A truely maginificent waterfall. Allow 3 hours there and back.

Fairly easy hike

By tukngo |

Hike can be done by most in good shape. Not too long and mostly flat. Recent rains had made the waterfall a little faster flow.

Beautiful out and back hike with stunning falls as the destination

By River_diva_mary |

This hike is an easy to moderate hike with wonderful scenery throughout. It is dog friendly and in April there was water accessible for my dog at many points along the trail. Based upon a recommendation, I went early and was the first to arrive at the falls and had it to myself for about a half an hour. THen there was a steady stream of folks arriving. There is a small pool below the falls that my dog swam in - it was a bit too cold for me although there were others who did go in. A hike I would do again if in the area.

Well worth the effort!

By JDD |

We made camp at the trailhead, lucky to get one of the few spots at the campground. If you’re thinking of doing the same get there early in the day as it fills fast and there’s people looking for sites all day long. We chose to get an early start to the trails given the crowded parking lot the day we arrived. Be sure to grab an interpretive pamphlet at main washrooms, as the trail is marked with numbers coinciding with the pamphlet. Of particular interest on the way in were the rock paintings...very cool. The trail itself is not terribly difficult; generally rearranged rock or solid rock base interspersed with sandy sections (the sandy bits are less enjoyable). We’d give the trail a 5 out of 10 for construction given the rougher sections and rolling grades. No problem getting there as we saw all ages and ability along the way out. Would recommend wearing non-mesh shoes, as the finer sands and dust will seep through the mesh. We managed to get to the site alone, and enjoyed the early morning sun on the Falls...spectacular. On our way out we encountered 30+ fellow hikers on the way in...early is good! The hike is realistically the 3 hours noted in brochures for an average hiker.

Awesome hike with a real reward at the end

By Mark D |

Great hike with lots of great scenery to look at. It was about 6 miles round trip but the waterfall at the end was amazing. I did the trip right after noon. I took my time walking the easy to fallow trail, taking many pictures along the way. Great trail for everyone to take the time to do!

Beautiful hike with a beautiful waterfall

By GlutenFreeFamilyTraveler |

Wow, just wow!!! The waterfall is amazing. The pod below is is refreshing. The hike back out isn’t fun once it gets hot so go early! Plus the crowds starts showing up to “party” around lunchtime.

a beautiful place to some beautiful scenery and oh the water fall is pretty great too

By Sherry G |

in just a couple of hours of hiking you can enjoy a nice hike, some beautiful scenery and a very nice waterfall. We saw ducks and geese and not so far that our kids were going to be mad.

Nice hike with a great prize in the end

By zlsdad |

Let's be clear: this is no walk in the park - it is definitely a hike at a little under six miles round trip. The camp attendant said it was pretty easy with a gentle slope up. So, it definitely slopes up, but depending on your condition, it may or many not be easy. Fit adults, kids older than 5 - no problem. Young kids (under 5) *might* find it a bit long. There is a lot of climbing up and down rock formations along the creek, sandy stretches and a couple of sections where you are literally parting the plant fronds as you are walking along - more so than other mountainous hikes, we made sure to check for ticks because you are in a lot of foliage (we found none afterwards...). Once we got there, there were quite a few people and families enjoying the small lake / pond from the waterfall. You can wade out 20 feet or more and cool off your feet. If you are feeling adventurous, swim out a little further. If you are a strong swimmer, you can get out under the waterfall, but use caution! The force of the water is strong dropping down 130 feet and churns right at the base of the cliff. Overall the hike was a bit strenuous, but satisfying, especially given the reward at the end. Oh yes, if you plan to go swimming, unless you like hiking three miles in wet clothes, be sure to bring some dry clothes to hike back in...

Beautiful hike in Escalante

By Melissa |

This is a relatively easy hike with big rewards! The trail is around 6 miles round trip from the parking lot and mostly flat. The only hard part is that the trail is almost all sand. There is a brochure you can pick up at the beginning of the trail and it tells you about different things, marked with numbered posts, along the way. There are petroglyphs on a far away cliff and a 126 foot waterfall at the end. Definitely worth the trip!

Hike the lower Calf Creek Falls Trail

By Noracd |

Wonderful country to hike through- sheer rock walls, lots of wildlife, and a great falls to rest at. Be sure to go prepared with water and snacks.

Nice trek

By KK |

We had a very nice afternoon going to the falls, it is hot though in the middle of the day. The area is beautiful, and the drive to the trek is also worth it.

Tent camping and hiking

By kingofthenorthlv |

A beautiful first come first serve campground with calf creek running through it. Lucked out and got a spot right next to the creek. Fire rings and a wood or charchol grill and picnic table at each site. $15 a night. Drinking water and a toilet to boot.

The hike to Lower Calf Creek Falls was excellent. Very scenic and the falls runs year round and is amazing.

Camp host runs a tight ship and everything is spotless😀

Beautiful hike

By lynnefc8 |

This is hot in the summer and the footing includes soft sand as well as big steps up the rocks, so be warned. However, the scenery is fabulous. The round trip is about 5.5 miles with no long steep climbs.

Scenic hike to waterfall

By VoyageurOregon |

The hike to the Lower Calf Creek Falls passes through towering Navajo sandstone walls on both sides of the trail. It wasn't crowded when we were there which made for a very pleasant hike with time to admire the pictographs and the beautiful monuments around us.

We stopped here for a picnic lunch while driving Hwy 12 from Torrey to Bryce last fall. We had read about how beautiful it was, so we planned in advance for this to be our lunch spot. If you're not going to hike, if you're just planning to picnic, there are probably other places more scenic along Hwy 12. Don't get me wrong-- for hiking, this would be a great place. But just stopping for a picnic, not so much.

The picnic area is very small, with only a few tables. There are no trashcans! You must carry out all your trash! We ended up sitting at a table right by the parking area, so not as scenic as we had hoped. We did not drive on up into the parking area where you have to pay to park. We stopped right at the entrance for our picnic. Perhaps if we'd gone further into the park, the picnic spots would've been better. Since we weren't planning to hike, we didn't want to pay just to have a picnic.

Just a little info for non-hikers :)

Beautiful Hike!

By Cheree L |

This hike took us about 3 hours round trip. We stayed at the falls two hours, playing in the water and sand. We went during spring break and the weather was beautiful. The water was very cold so no on actually swam. We caught three fish along the journey and the kids tried very hard to catch a few with their hands- but were unsuccessful. This would be a much more difficult hike in the summer with hot weather. The parking lot was crowded in spring, but I'm sure would be overflowing in the summer.

So Much Fun!

By dave k |

Lower Calf Creek Falls in Ecalante Utah... a beautiful (and relatively easy!) three mile hike from the trail head to the falls. Along thew way are beaver, trout, bird of all kind, Petroglyphs, Anasazi ruins and some of the most amazing views you have ever been through.

LOVED THIS HIKE!!!

By Virginia R |

Somewhat flat, interesting hike with an awesome finish waterfall and swimming hole. I wish I bought my swimming suit. The scenery for this hike was magnificent---great rock formations---we even saw a petroglyph. Flat hike so not difficult at all. The finish was awesome with the refreshing waterfall.

Strenuous but amazing!

By Ozzy_trav |

The hike is strenuous because it’s 5km each way mostly on soft sand and 30 degrees celsius over summer so allow 3-4 hours. The falls and the natural swimming pool are just gorgeous but the water is surprisingly freezing! The terrain in and out is just magnificent so if you’re fit and able, it’s a trip highlight!

Worth the hike

By helpinghands001 |

This hike was an easy to moderate hike. The length is what makes it more moderate. There is little elevation and numerous different vegetation & topography to walk through. You walk along the canyons, through tall grasses, along sheer rock faces, through dusty red cliff areas, and dry river beds. The scenery & terrain change a lot making it a very beautiful & interesting hike. The end result of the waterfalls is a spectacular pool area, don't miss this hike.

Totally amazing. Worth the hike!

By mizcayosusa |

Leave early. Sun can get brutal in warmer months. I am a novice hiker and I would give the trail an easy to moderate. Some ups and downs, lots of sand which drags you down. Bring lots of water. When you get to Lower Calf Creek Falls it will be all worth it. This is what I picture Havasu Falls to be like. So much fun (and great pics) to put your feet into that pool of water! Picturesque and romantic! We spread out some plastic and had lunch there. Give yourself 4-5 hours to enjoy the whole experience
about 1 1/2 hours each way + time at the falls!)

Lower Calf Creek Falls trail

By gr8ful4222 |

We hiked the Lower Calf Creek Falls trail in late September. We arrived around 9 am, and were surprised to find the parking lot only half full, plus there were two overflow parking lots. Next to the main parking lot were an information kiosk, flush restrooms, picnic tables, and potable water; but no trash receptacles. Note that there is a day-use fee of five dollars (exact change only) for parking here, but the National Park Pass is also accepted.

The 2.75 mile hike to the waterfall was easy, probably because we started before it got hot. About one mile of the walk is in sand, and the rest on rock or sand, with some rock steps to negotiate but nothing too difficult. There are numbered markers on the trail that correspond to the trail guide; be sure to stop at marker #8 and look for the Fremont-style pictographs on the cliff to your right. What surprised me was how beautiful the hike was even before we got to the waterfall. The trail runs next to Calf Creek so there’s a lot of greenery in contrast to the red rocks, including oak trees, wildflowers, and cactus.

Finally we reached the 126-foot waterfall falling into a shallow pool, and it was stunning. There’s a small sandy beach off to the left of it, plus plenty of room to just sit and admire it while enjoying lunch. Some of the hikers there were wearing swimsuits, but the water was so icy cold, most of us just waded in the pool until our feet became numb.

Hiking back was more difficult because around 11:30 am it started to get really hot. If you do this hike, I recommend starting early and bringing your trekking pole, lots of water and a towel for drying off. This is a beautiful hike with a great payoff.

Wonderful scenic hike

By outdoorgirlnj7 |

Our group picked this hike as we had not tried it before. We were not disappointed. Fairly easy to moderate trail to a beautiful falls and reflecting pool. 6 miles round trip for anyone who is interested.
Our weather was 3 season. Warm then rain turned to sleet and snow then sun and wind!
Made for a very interesting hike. Brought out the smell of all the flowers and bushes, brought such color to the cactus ( purple ) and changed all the colors of the rock walls. Don't think a sunny day would have shown the dramatic diversity of color.

The Falls are worth the hike

By John S |

This is a relatively strenuous 6 mile round trip. There is a lot of walking on sand. It has nice views and the mid point is a beautiful falls. Take note of the local recommendations and set off early.

great half day hike

By shirley m |

Lower falls is a great half day hike through pretty easy terrain. Well marked--no chance of getting lost! Great payoff, as the falls are super lovely! Pretty busy when we were there--LOTS of other hikers, but this may be because all the slot canyons were flooded at the time, so options for a day hike were limited.

Worth Every Step....

By Trina |

The Lower Calf Creek Falls trail is a spectacular 6 mile in and out trail with little elevation change. Parts of the trail are sandy which is more difficult than a packed or dirt trail for hiking. Just a warning that this is a HIGHLY populated hike, so do your best to get to the trailhead as early as possible (and use the toilet facilities at the parking area as there are none on the trail) - preferably go on a weekday if you can. Be aware there is a $5 day use fee to park. This is the ONLY trail within the Escalante area that is man made, clearly marked, and well traveled. It is very easy to follow and there is an interpretive trail guide/brochure at the trailhead. The waterfall is more beautiful than you'd ever imagine and is worth every step of the 6 miles. If in the Boulder or Escalante area, this is one not to be missed.

Beautiful waterfall

By Dawn E |

Wonderful hike to a beautiful waterfall. Allow at least four hours for the hike. It was not too strenuous and had different grasslands and scenery along the 3 mile hike to the falls (6 miles round trip). It is not a loop hike. It's 3 miles in and 3 miles out. There is no water drinking water available once you leave the trail head. There are no garbage receptacles along the way. All garbage must be put in your car and taken with you. There is a map at the trailhead with numbered points of interest along the trail. The maps are located in a metal box at the beginning of the trail. It's very cool near the waterfall after 10 o'clock in the morning as the sun goes behind the mountains and it is in shade. Most of the trails are sand and some deep sand, so you may want to think about the shoes that you wear. There is a lot of water that comes down from the waterfall into a creek and you can cross the creek to another area that has sun later in the day so you need water shoes or bare feet. There are no benches or tables at the waterfall. There are rocks and fallen tree branches to sit on or the ground. The trail goes up-and-down and has rocky areas or is sand.

Very nice !

By kenbob13 |

A very nice hike in & out 3 miles each way. Very pleasant falls at the end of the box canyon. Would of been in the water had the air Temps been warmer...

Easy hike but take plenty of waater.

By Eric T |

Easy trail, brought the dogs and let them go in the stream part way up. Worth the time to see it. Great picttures.

Popular trail in Grand Staircase

By joelovesliving |

Trail walks along Lower Calf Creek to the lower falls. It's 1/3 the distance from Escalante towards Boulder, UT. This is a scenic hike with lots of dramatic cliffs and desert varnish. Falls are in a cool small amphitheater, with pretty colors. Round trip was about 3 hours for us, including a leisurely lunch.

Great hike

By Steve M |

This is a fairly flat six mile hike. Sandy parts of the trail will slow you down but my six year old didn't complain. The falls are great. It took us 3.5 hours round trip with plenty of stops and a half hour at the falls. Take your time! Listen to the birds and watch the rainbow trout swim upstream.

Excellent hike

By Chris-9153 |

Excellent: but involves some rocky and high step areas on trail so not good for mobility challenged people...

hidden gem

By Toni W |

my GPS did not take us to the correct location but instead took us only to the top of the hill. We got info from a local and jus had to drive a bit further to find it. Well worth the hike! Petroglyphs at marker 8 just look across the stream halfway up the rocks. Water was cold but my kids got in anyway!

Easy hike to a beautiful waterfall!

By Amber O |

This was one of the few hikes in the area where we didn't feel completely exposed to the sun. It's an easy, mostly level hike on a paved path to a gorgeous waterfall. Bring snacks, pull up a rock, and enjoy a picnic when you arrive at the falls. And look at the falls from all different perspectives. I was taking photos straight on when I saw someone off to the far left. I went over there and it was a totally different view. Too cold for a swim when we were there but that would have been fun!

Lovely 6 mile hike!

By karenste99 |

Easy trail that leads you to a beautiful waterfall. Wild sage plants are plentiful and smell so good! Lots of places to explore along the path. Good for a run too!

Excellent 4 hour hike

By bugga1949 |

Well marked trailhead on Route 12. Beautiful easy hiking culminating in a beautiful waterfall! $5 day parking fee. Pack a lunch. Recommend continuing your day by turning left on the way out to Singing Canyon on Burr Trail.

Wonderful hike, scenic payoff.

By George H |

Pleasant, easy hike back to Lower Falls. Just gorgeous. Arrive at midday to best photo opportunities.

Excellent hike. Gorgeous falls!

By Csu R |

Please read my blog @ accidentaladventuress.com for complete details about this hike. We hiked in the late afternoon in late September. There appeared to be quite a few people coming BACK from the falls, but when we got to the falls, we had them all to ourselves! The hike is actually a little more difficult than the guide books would lead you to believe; the majority of it is in loose, soft sand which fatigues you quicker. There are also climbs up rocks - nothing too serious (no scrambling) - but the trail is not flat. It took us just under 4 hours, and that was with a 30 minute picnic at the base of the falls. There is also a $5 fee to park at the trail head, and there are no other parking options. Nice, clean REAL restrooms!

Get your hiking legs on!!!

By Guy H |

It's a 3 mile trek through some beautiful country to get to the prize at the end. A 125 ft waterfall awaits, and you can take a dip in the cool water. Just make sure you take plenty of water with you for the trip in, and the trip out.

Easy Hike - Beautiful from Start to Finish!

By Stacey L |

This was one of my favorite hikes! It was overwhelmingly scenic from start to finish, with a beautiful waterfall to enjoy halfway through. It's a great introductory, or cool-down hike. Good for folks of all ages/abilities. Definitely make this a stop on your Utah adventure!

Morning hike

By Mark B |

6 mile hike, moderate due to length, easy as to difficulty, highlight of hike is very nice waterfall, was surprised how heavy the water flow was in October, good for picnics, provided some insight into ancient cultures, highly recommend , must do , if in the Escalante area

Favorite hike

By James B |

Great 6 mile hike that was mostly easy with a couple of moderate spots.
Fantastic views, some good shady spots and the waterfall at the end was really worth the effort to make it to the end!

Beautiful hike

We read good reviews and decided to hike this trail. We were warmly greeted by trail hosts giving directions. We saw wildlife, ancient pictographs and a stunning waterfall. One of our best hikes we did in Utah!

Oasis on the rocks

By Pascal S |

After a couple of hours drive in hot July, our kids especially loved this place.
The Creek forms a nice pool, so everybody could cool down, both parents and kids.
As it does not seem well known, there were plenty of empty pick-nick tables - grills included. Good parking, too.
A lovely green oasis in the middle of beautiful valley scenery.

I felt like I was in Paradise

By YoDenie |

We timed our arrival right at noon, when there were few shadows. The rocks and falls are spectacular! The hike to and had a lot of variety of foilage, ponds, Indian Granary, shady areas. It took us abut 5.5 hours total. You'll want to stay awhile soaking in the beauty of the Falls.

Phenomenal trek to a beautiful waterfall

By ozbound08 |

Absolutely loved this hike! It's not strenuous, though the terrain changes multiple times. You'll walk across sand, over rocky areas, through overgrown brush, past bamboo and it is all amazing! The waterfall at the end is breathtaking. You need to just sit, unpack the snacks you brought and enjoy the sight and sound of it.

Beautiful hike for all ages

By Ziva3 |

Beautiful, fun, short hike. Waterfall was in a very nice area. Cool, shady, sandy. Great place to picnic or have kids run around and play. Very safe grounds. It was very crowded, and parking was kind of limited. The parking area had a day fee. But we ended up parking on the road. It was very crowded on the trail, but it was worth the hike.

Best taste of the Canyons

By Jaisal9 |

An easy 3 miles one way 500 foot gain hike up a beautiful, varied canyon with Calf Creek creating varied riparian environments and the colors and geological and human history very rich and colorful. Well curated. Ending in a beautiful 120 foot waterfall and pool (cold!).

Great hike and waterfall

By Buster0535 |

Nice 3 mile'ish hike into the falls. It gets really sandy so you'll have to pour it out of your shoes a few times if it gets in. Waterfall as awesome. Saw a beaver on the way also. Make sure to grab the trail guide that explains what all the numbers are along the way. Also, if you want parking then get there early. And have cash to pay the trailhead fee if you don't have a parks pass.

Great trail. Beautiful falls.

By Carol H |

Awesome hike to the falls. The falls are absolutely beautiful. Take your bathing suit, the water is cool and refreshing after hiking in. There is shade along the way since the hike follows the Creek.

Gorgeous 6 mile walk in escalante national park takes you to the falls. I didn't do this as didn't have time, but saw other peoples photos and had it recommended to me.

Wonderful hike

By srbeau645 |

this was an easy and gorgeous hike. Scenery featured canon walls, babbling creek and beaver ponds. It was fun to seek out granaries and petroglyphs with binocs.

wonderful hike with some wild life sightings

By thecadean@yahoo.com |

wonderful hike with some wild life sightings.

Easy to find with plenty of free parking at the bottom of scenic HWY 12. Some Billy goating involved a a few chances to make a wrong turn or two but mostly well traveled and easy to follow. Great for the whole family young and old (we're 60). Be sure to bring plenty of water and a snack or two. Enjoy

Hike to a Beautiful Reward

By Matthew C |

The entire hike from the beginning to the falls was a great time. There's plenty to see along the way and the kids didn't get bored at all. Just watch out for the cacti, and even they were blooming.

Great family hike

By wre2018 |

We have hiked to the Lower Calf Creek waterfall at least 6 times, and view this as a 'must-do' when taking family/friends to the Escalante region. No special gear is needed, just comfortable shoes. During weekends and especially in high season, the parking lot will fill quickly. There isn't much shade, so doing this hike in the summer will be a bit uncomfortable if done in the middle of the day. We have always taken our dog, and we take at least 1 quart of water per person.
During one of our visits, there was a light sprinkle as we were hiking in, and then a flash flood started---the water coming over the falls was muddy and at least 10x greater in volume than normal---a minute or so before we got to the pool underneath the waterfall, from what another hiker told us. We quickly took photos, and got out of there. The path, which was dry when we hiked in, was knee-deep in water in places as we were going out. We just waded through the deep spots, but others scrambled to higher ground. Then it started raining hard and water started to flood into the parking area, and we told people with little children to get out pronto.
Lower Calf Creek is well signed, and there is parking. This is not the case for Upper Calf Creek Falls. Access the upper waterfall, which is not as impressive, by driving a bit further up Highway 12 and parking by the road. Then scramble down the slickrock and bushwack to the waterfall. The upper falls hike requires more dexterity than the lower one, and watch out for rattlesnakes.

A Must In Escalante

By William P |

6.5 miles round trip on an easy trail, Calf Creek affords access through a great canyon to a waterfall at its end. Trailhead is in the campground just off HIghway 12. Park there for a nominal usage fee. A great time to do this hike is in fall when the cottonwoods are turning. Take adequate water.

Beautiful Hike

By BlissfulTime |

What a wonderful day we had yesterday at Calf Creek Falls! This hike is good for people of all ages. However is is about a 6 mile hike round trip with some incline. Beautiful, peaceful and fun! I would like to go back again next month.

Well worth it

By Barton S |

This hike is harder than it looks due to a very sandy track, but the payoff on this one is very good.

Desert Waterfall--wow

By Miriam F |

From the Northwest, I'm very used to nice hikes to lovely waterfalls but it was very exciting to hike in sand and come upon this spectacular cascade. Round trip from the trailhead to the lower falls took me about 3 hours. It's not a strenuous hike but I did have a little trouble following the trail at one point on the return. I found it with the help of friendly hikers. When I hung out at the falls I was happy to add back an extra layer of clothing.

Easy hike to a beautiful waterfall

By HeatherH6 |

If you are looking for an easy hike with a nice payoff at the end, this is it. The waterfall is very photogenic.

Very hot and beautiful

By BoiseFam |

Ok, this hike is really pretty, and the waterfall at the end is awe inspiring, but if it is summer time, PLEASE start your hike around 2 or 3 PM so that the sun will be blocked by the canyon walls for most of your way out. It is extremely hot in there, with deep sand to walk through. Bring more water and snacks than you think you need!!!

Too crowded

By Sarah B |

This might be amazing but there were maybe 100 cars there, parked on the highway and a line all the way out. Couldn’t handle all the people even if it was amazing.

Terrific hike

By Excursion640936 |

Lovely hike on sand / rock trail surrounded by impressive rock walls. After a little more than two miles in, you arrive at a crystal clear waterfall and frigid pool. Several brave people were in the water. My feet cramped up from cold within a minute or two.. Great fun!

Amazing waterfall.

By SBM50k |

Started hike midweek before 7am. Cool shaded walk. Stoped along the number signs. Info sheet is outside bathrooms. The falls were powerful even though it was very dry as it has not rained for a long time. We had the place to ourselves. So nice. On the way back we saw groups heading out. Not huge elevation but very sandy trails which made it harder.
Loved this hike!!! Beautiful scenery. Don’t forget to stop at post 8 to see the petroglyphs way across the river.

Walk of a life time

By christinahH5485SU |

It was 3 women and 2 dogs went on this 3 mile hike to find this beautiful water fall, you could see wildlife, drawings on the rocks, and a beautiful waterfall! We couldn't believe our eyes! People were so amazed how the different colors hit the waterfall! Bring plenty of water!

A pleasant afternoon hike, noisy campground

By William H |

We've visited Lower Calf Creek campground and falls three times this year. It's a remarkable area: nice hike and great waterfall in gorgeous deep sandstone canyon country. Just up the road is less visited Upper Calf Creek Falls, which we like even better. The campground at Lower Calf Creek and the Lower Falls seem to be hangouts for local middle school and high school kids. They become noisy like what one would expect at birthday celebration held at a city park

Perfect place for little ones to play for a few hours

By atlas993 |

A local gave us a recommendation to come here with our kids and she was right! We arrived close to noon after a short hike gone wrong and the parking lot was nearly full. It was a little confusing where to go to just get into the creek and let the kids play without being in someone’s campground. After walking around for a bit we found a private area towards the front where we could sit and play in the creek. We were there in early October and the creek was freezing. The kids could care less though and had the best time ever just playing in the water and skipping stones. Definitely a perfect place for the kids to hang out for a few hours. If our kids were older we would have loved doing one of the hikes to the falls, but just enjoying the creek was fun for the young ones.

Lovely hike.

By loisjoy |

Not as easy a hike as I was led to believe but the falls at the end were a great reward. Took us about 4 hours total (there and back) Loved seeing the pictographs, and beautiful stream along the way.

128 foot waterfall

By mrkcjones |

Beautiful, the trail is 3 miles one way, for the area it's a short hike. 6 round trip bring lots of water, the trail is mostly sand.. more difficult just because of that. And it's a flat trail. Beware of snakes on trail.

Great but busier hike

By Mark S |

Hike was hot and dry so bring water but it was a great hike. Little busier than others we had done. The falls at the end were really pretty and great to cool off in

6-mile hike to celebrate our 55th wedding anniversary

By pbnana4 |

The hike was tougher than we expected, and we were under-prepared (did not bring enough water). Wear good hiking shoes for “slick” rock areas. We liked the rule that dogs had to be controlled by leash or voice, which allowed our dog to have a wonderful experience. The creek and falls at the end we’re worth it!

Great Hike

By Ti J |

We had a delightful hike to upper calf creek falls. It is steep so be forewarned but it was well worth it

Hot!

By symanthae |

Amazing hike, beautiful waterfall. The temperature was around 117. We had taken plenty of water and started early. Best to be off trail by noon, or spend all day at the waterfall and hike out in the evening when the sun goes down on hot days. Absolutely beautiful and would go back.

Beautiful 6 mi hike to Lower Calf Creek Falls!

By Bettina G |

A beautiful hike, and probably the most popular of the trails around. The falls in the cove at the end are really spectacular, with the green and gold shimmering walls and fine mist spray over the pool. I would recommend this hike to anyone who can walk the 6 miles. It was still early in the season when I last went, so it wasn't crowded at all, but I know it gets a lot of traffic. I sure hope the $5 day-use fee is for the maintenance and preservation of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (as opposed to some private enterprise)!

beautiful and easy 6 mile hike

By PaigeyPaige |

hike near a creek and get to a great waterfall at the end. Small amount of ups and downs but mostly easy terrain.

Awesome - a Must if visiting Grand StairCase Escalante

By GaytonUSMA87 |

The hike to lower Calf Creek Falls is listed as a 5.8 mile moderate hike. It was a beautiful hike along the creek - with some areas climbing over small rock outcrops, some through woods, some through fields, some through dirt areas and then it finally opens on a beautiful waterfalls where everyone feels compelled to take off their shoes and socks and take a dip. There is a rock face along the waterfall that folks attempt to shimmy up for 30 feet and then end up sliding down into the basin. The water is cold and refreshing after the ~3 mile hike. This is a easy/moderate hike for folks who are looking for a beautiful destination.

Beautiful

By Michael |

Well worth the hike. I would rate it as easy to moderate. Spectacular view at the end of the Lower calf creek trail where the falls are.

Awesome hidden gem - camping too!

By PatMellen |

This is a crazy amazing hike. There is little to no grade but also little to no shade. You can rush and power hike to the falls but if you take your time and look around as you go there are hidden gems to be seen. Like the mama duck hosting duckling swimming lessons. Like all of the wildflowers. Like the trout hiding in the pools in the river. A few tiny lizards. No snakes, which was somewhere between a relief and a disappointment.

I will agree that the falls are amazing. The pictures of the falls you see are accurate. There is room for swimming. The water is chilly tho.

However. This is at least an hour hike each way in good weather and carry LOTS and LOTS of water. Bring sturdy shoes, and be prepared for rocky and/or sandy trail sections. The trail is well marked but once the sun has hit 10am there is not much shade. No potable water sources after you leave the trailhead. Completely worth the effort. Parking gets dicey after mid-morning so come early.

We also camped here, but the 10 or so private spots go fast so plan ahead. The campgrounds are woven into a dense cove of trees in a totally picturesque canyon. There are no showers, just sayin. There is a shallow river with a swimming hole so improvising is a must. The BLM folks take great care of this camp, and it is in pristine condition. The sites are very private other than the group site, which is after all is a group site.

Great hike.

By Myla |

6 miles round trip hike. It takes us 3,5 hours. Very spectacular. We came after 4pm, so it was a lot of shade. The waterfall was beautiful and had a lot of water

Nice hike to break up your drive

By bikingmom |

We stopped here on our way from Capitol Reef to Bryce. Nice hike , definitely more strenuous walking through the sand. We were there on a Sunday so quite a few families and dogs on this hike. The waterfall at the end is very pretty. This hike is mostly in the sun so make sure to bring plenty of water , a hat and sunscreen. A really nice break from the drive .

Hike long but you can still wade

By KimboFlorida |

We visited in mid-July and ended up near the rec area in the early afternoon. The hike to the falls takes a minimum of 4 hours not including the time you spend once you get there. It was over 100 degrees and our youngest would have never made the hike. If you pay the $5 and park in the lot, walk around behind the restrooms in the parking lot and there is a secluded area to wade in the river. The kids spent HOURS there, wading in the ankle deep water, playing with other kids as they showed up and trying to fashion impromptu fishing rods out of sticks and rocks to catch the occasional trout you can see at the bottom. Careful, the algae makes the rocks very slippery in spots. Saw numerous people slip and fall. Great way to spend a few hours.

Wow-so beautiful

By Rich L |

Amazing (mostly flat) 6 mile round trip hike. We took out 2 year old in the back pack and made it to the falls in 1.5 hours (we took our time) Dog friendly trail. Make sure you start early or late as it gets crowded between 10-3pm

Lovely waterfall

By Randy K |

Very enjoyable. We got there around 9:00, and were lucky to find a parking place. The only negative was having to walk through heavy sand in several spots. That made for stronger leg muscles, I suppose!

Lovely hike

By 481989 |

Great hike on a fall day. It was still hot so you needed plenty of water. The hike is mainly in the sun so plan accordingly. It feels great to get wet after a long hike

Hike to Calf Creek Falls

By Alice L |

A three mile hike on a relatively flat trail, through woods, wetlands, sand and over rock slabs leads to Calf
Creek Falls and the clear pool at its base. Birds sing along creek trail and beautiful wildflowers, shrubs and trees make for an enjoyable nature hike. The falls are spectacular with the colored algae and plants growing on the rock wall behind the 130' falls! On a warm day, a dip in the cool pool at the base is perfect! Be sure to take plenty of water, especially if it is in the low 90's like the day we hiked in.
Calf Creek Falls is one of the iconic waterfalls that people love to hike to.

Great Hike with a Gorgeous Waterfall

By 64Aviator |

Hike takes about 3 hours (round trip). This is one of those MUST hikes in the Escalante area. Recommend hiking earlier or later in the day - makes for a more acceptable mix of sun and shade. Be sure to pack your camera, extra water, sunscreen, and a bathing suit. The water hole at the base of the waterfall makes for a nice dip on a hot day.

Tip: Park at the Calf Creek Falls Campground (or if busy, along Highway 12 near the campground). Pack a picnic - there are plenty of picnic tables in the campground. Just down from the main picnic area is a short trail (head east) to the river - there is a fantastic spot to take your kids and enjoy the river and can be done with or without the hike to the waterfall. We spent a couple of hours just letting our kids play in the water. Bring some folding chairs to chill out - there is room by the river to hang out.

Calf creek lower falls hike

By brentgeppert |

This hike is 3 miles into the lower Falls and then three miles back although you're hiking 90% on Sand it is a bit more difficult than normal hard-packed trail. The trail is very scenic but make sure you keep near the creek there are other trails that people have made that can be a little misleading. There are 13 trail markers so as long as you're seeing those markers you're on the right trail otherwise be careful. Make sure to get there early because the parking lot fills up rather quickly. Take lots of water and pace yourself if you're not an experienced hiker. The waterfall at the end is spectacular and the water is very cold but people were definitely swimming.

Great Payoff

By moco421 |

We hiked the lower falls in August and hit the trail around 930. I clocked about 6.4 miles from the parking lot and the hike took 2:50 plus we spent about 20 minutes at the falls. It was an awesome intermediate hike and the falls did not disappoint. My suggestion is to get there as early as possible to avoid mid-day sun in the summer.

Worth the hike.

By VANESSA M |

The hike in was very enjoyable, and was easy except for a few spots where you have to navigate some rocks. The sand is difficult for some. But the Falls were spectacular.

Sandy walk to beautiful waterfall and swimming hole.

By C M |

The hike to the falls is mostly flat as it follows a creek. In many areas the trail is loose sand. There are areas of shade but depending on the time of day, this could be a very hot hike. The falls and the sandy area around the falls are lovely with trees for shade and a great swimming hole. However, because it is in a canyon the swimming hole and falls lose sun early, 2pm in mid-June. When the sun was shining, swimming seemed like a good idea. Without the sun the spray from the falls was very cool and the swimming hole not nearly as inviting. The creek that leads from the falls is shallow and invites wading. You may want to bring water shoes.

Excellent

By Elisabeth R |

We totally enjoyed the hike to the falls. Well worth the 3 miles in and 3 miles out.The scenery was beautiful along the way. Excellent experience.

Worth the hike!

By Carol F. |

What an amazing morning spent at lower Calf Creek Falls! We hiked in 3 miles (6 mile round trip) on a packed dirt trail sometimes sandy, mostly flat - slight elevation here and there. Take at least three bottles of water per person and snacks. We enjoyed our lunch in the shade of a tree by the 125 ft waterfall.

Great hike, easy access from the road

By Laurence H |

Enjoyed the hike, the views, flowers and cactus were in bloom. Easy trail, well graded without a lot of vertical.

Wow!

By Desistarr |

Absolutely delightful hike which meanders through the desert and forest. Fairly easy hike. The destination is worth the hike.

Hiking in a beautiful canyon

By vwsjones |

The trail is about six miles round trip and moderate to simple.
the slick rock walls of the canyon are inspiring and the small creek sounds are comforting. I can get hot in there and take water.

Our Favorite Hike of Our Trip!

By RobInWisconsin |

First off, there are two Calf Creek Falls hikes, upper and lower. My son and I did the upper hike, which does have quite a descent in the beginning portion. I have a surgically repaired knee, and was able to do the descent with little problem. It's a bit reminiscent of the slick rock portion of the Delicate Arch hike at Arches, so be aware for the ascent.

You hike through lots of different types of geological environments, and while the trail is fairly well marked by cairns, there are places where they either disappear or are hard to find. Yes, we got lost twice on the hike, but found our way with no problem. We started off by hiking to the creek at the bottom, eventually hiking in the creek, going downstream. With shoes off, the rock creek bed was quite easy to traverse, and there are some pretty incredible underwater rock formations and potholes. After hiking downstream, we went upstream, and wound up at the waterfall and pool. Amazing! And that water was cold, which was refreshing. After hanging out there for a while, we hiked up to the top of the falls, where there are at least a couple more pools (you have to hike back just a little for the second one).

As I said, this was our favorite hike of the trip. We stayed on state and BLM lands this time to avoid the crowds, and it worked out well.

One tip: if you see that a trail is not well marked, please do set up cairns for those who follow you. Thanks!

Nice hike with beautiful waterfall

By Raymond R |

Reasonably easy 3+ mile (total) hike to a cold and loud waterfall. $3(?) parking fee. Trail into the waterfall skirts a wetland area in the canyon. We saw a large blue heron, various other birds, chipmunks, squirrels. The trail is not a continious flat path. It will require the ability to take rock steps in some places and may require someone with knee problems to have a little assistance in places. Don't let that stop you from enjoying this spectacular waterfall!

Well Worth the Hike--but there is some work involved!

By Jan5775 |

We stayed in Escalante and this hike was recommended to us as easy...I would say it's more of a moderate hike. On the good side it isn't just a straight hike UP, and it goes from sun to shade so you get some breaks. But, do take plenty of water , especially if you are there in warm weather, and be prepared that you are in the sand for a lot of the hike. There are places to stop and rest but it's not like there are benches to sit on. Remember it's about 6 miles for the round trip. It's a beautiful waterfall and you can rest there before you start the trip back.Take a snack with you--but be sure you don't leave your trash. As they say, if you pack it in, you pack it out. I am so glad we did this...it was breathtaking, but at 61 and 71...it was some work! Also, the parking lot fills up fast.

Easy to get lost

By Lisa T |

Interesting hike to upper calf creek falls, but it's easy to get lost and the falls are mediocre. Also, the hike up in the sun is something to plan for. Hiking poles were very useful going down.

Best to start early and not in summer!

By Ruby A |

The hike was said to be easy to medium but for those who don't hike a lot like me IT'S A DIFFICULT HIKE. Some part of the trail is steep and by the cliff with nothing to hold on to. We started to hike early in the morning last September 9 and by the time we're on our way back to the car IT WAS JUST HOT! There wasn't much water on the falls during fall and it was difficult to take a good picture without someone photo bombing your pics.

Beautiful !!

By Ava |

The hike is fairly easy. Well marked. It leads you to an amazing waterfall. The water is clear, clean, COLD, and beautiful. Very COLD. Everyone that went in came out pink, it was so cold. Make sure you wear your bathing suit under your hiking clothing or wear clothing that will dry very quickly. Bring a towel to dry with and of course a LUNCH. You will totally enjoy sitting under the trees watching everyone run in the water. Bring lots of water for the hike, hiking shoes for support. Family friendly.

Hiking

By albertm10 |

We love hiking and to reach that wonderful falls you have almost one and a half hour to hike. Don't miss the oportunity to enjoy the wonderful view and take the time to make yourself fresh after the walk.

Waterfalls in the desert are always so cool!

By Taco84098 |

From the parking lot, the hike to the falls was about 90 minutes. Mostly flat, easy trail, with a few short, steep step climbs. Totally worth it! The falls, even in the middle of August were amazing. Super chilly water though.

Well Worth the effort

By Markobrown |

We spent three days touring Escalante area and our hike to this waterfalls was one of the highlights of our trip. It’s a fairly easy 3 mile hike in with a few places along the way that you need to be careful to follow the trail. The reward is this magnificent waterfall. One of the photos I took, we converted into a canvas print, which now hangs on the wall of our Utah townhome.

Amazing waterfall!

By BD103 |

This is a relatively easy hike with an outstanding reward at the end in the form of a 150ft waterfall! The hike is we--marked and has identifiers along the way so you can learn about petroglyphs, nature, animals and more. It's 5.5 miles roundtrip. Pack a lunch to eat at the base of the falls once you arrive. Be sure to arrive first thing in the morning to avoid people. We began at 9:30am and had the waterfall to ourselves and one other couple for a while. Beautiful hike!

this place used to be amazing, now it is just to busy to have the magic it used to.

By Chance S |

This place has it all fun in the sun, amazing vistas, water to play in, hiking, fishing, waterfalls and camping. But it also has way to many people for such a small area all summer long. The trail is crowded the creek is crowded and the campground is always full. The day use area is crowded, the parking is limited. It's all just way to overused anymore. Wish there were less folks there then it'd be amazing again.

Escalante, Utah offers unparalleled splendor!

By Teasdalegal |

I've been lurking around in the Escalante Canyons for over 30 years, and can never get enough of this country, which is why I moved to Teasdale, 70 mile north near Capitol Reef NP, when I retired.

Nice Walk, But Very Crowded

By Global-Villagerr |

Easy walk up the canyon to a lovely falls. But the masses of large families means you start and stop a LOT along the way.

Fantastic hike!!

By vch343 |

So many things I loved about this hike. I felt that we walked through so many different 'environments' (not sure what to call them). We would walk through a meadow-like area where its low grass on both sides, then we would walk through the 'jungle' where very tall green plants are on either side of you and you only have a 1 foot path to follow. Then you have the canyon walls on either side with beautiful vertical striping and colors. The songs of the birds are beautiful and you see such a variety! We came across 2 snakes during our walk which were small (but long) and harmless (we think). There is a lot of up and down, so sometimes you were huffing and puffing, but overall it was a moderately easy hike. The waterfall at the end was well worth it!!! It was a beautiful waterfall with a pool at the bottom. We started early in the morning - which is what I highly recommend as there were less people and the hike out wasn't as hot.

Parking at the Calf Creek Recreation Area for the day is $5/vehicle, but free if you have the American the Beautiful Parks Pass. It was also PACKED when we got back - so another reason to start your hike early.

Easy hike to waterfall

By Bruce C |

Nice, straightforward 6 mile round trip to waterfall and back. Wear hiking boots to help with sandy parts and traction for rocky parts. We saw several people with tennis shoes slip on rocks. A popular hike, so expect a steady stream of people. Dogs are allowed; unfortunately not all dog owners controlled their pets resulting in lots of barking and some aggressiveness towards other dogs. One dog was in pain after sitting in some cactus. Take lunch or snacks to enjoy by the waterfall as it’s a nice place to relax and enjoy.

Nice Hike, Beautiful Falls

By jimmyv4351 |

The hike was more like 4 miles than the 3 they say, but, it was worth it. Don't miss the pictographs along the way!

Peaceful, quiet falls after a moderate hike.

By Blairian |

The 3 miles out hug the sides of the canyon, passing near the creek that flows through. We saw several types of fish in the clear water, watched many different birds flying through the canyon. We were also able to see the 3 painted petroglyphs on the far wall. (Yes, I know painted ones are not call petroglyphs, just do not remember what they are called). But the payoff is the water fall. The area becomes misty, cool, and green, something a desert dweller like me really appreciates..

Water from the rock

By Paul S |

We first took our kids to Calf Creek when they were 8 and 6 and they made the hike easily as there is not much elevation gain, just a long sandy slog. We have been back a couple times since, most recently on a nippy November day when there were no other cars in the lot or anyone else on the trail. In a high and arid land full of desert varnished cliffs and dry streambeds, it is quite spectacular to see such the high and voluminous Lower Calf Creek Falls. This is one of the easiest and most popular trails in the Grand Staircase/Escalante monument so if you want to avoid people during the summer season and don't mind some exposure instead of following the stream bed, brave the hogback on hwy 12 and take the shorter, steeper trail to the equally spectacular Upper Calf Creek Falls. There is even an upper upper falls beyond that if you are adventurous.

Really neat hike

By Jenagu |

We took our two girls age 9 and 3 and really enjoyed it. The falls are beautiful and we enjoyed the pictographs as well .

Waterfall is great relief after hike

By fiveinalog |

Well worth doing this hike and be sure to plan to go in the very cold clean water. So different from other hikes we did in the area. It may not be labeled strenuous, but not easy either, as walking in the sand adds to the challenge and mostly flat is a bit misleading, in my opinion.

A worthwhile hike!!

By karenpammy2016 |

The hike to Calf Creek Falls is a bit challenging to locate as the exit from Escalante is on the left side -- when you see the sign, follow it slowly going down. They were in the midst to install guard rails along the side of one side of the road; therefore, it was closed to traffic on one side.

Parking is about only for around 50 cars at the most with a $5.00 day use fee per car. You may submit the admission fee in the envelope but if you have the NPS Senior LIfetime Pass, it can be used to pay for the admission fee here to the Calf Creek Falls.

If there is no parking space, wait a while as they will open up as hikers finish, they leave, lot of foot traffic.

Great hike

By lindalewis47 |

A fairly easy hike to an amazing waterfall - grab the guide to get information on the history and flora and fauna as you go along.

Great hike!

By Tammy B |

This hike is awesome! I hiked it with my children in 2007, and again this year with just my husband. It's an easy grade, felt like 3 mi. in and same back. BEAUTIFUL falls and swimming "hole" at the end. True desert oasis! Running stream with birds, fish, ducks. Beautiful desert varnish and a group of petroglyphs. Family friendly!

Lovely hike

By Ellen L |

Although this was probably the most visited attraction, it was also a very nice, scenic, easy hike out to some beautiful waterfalls. It was my favorite activity in Escalante.

Green canyon, colorful rocks, suitable for active families

By thrall |

Lower Calf Creek Trail is one of the few easy-access points into Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and is a very popular stop. Parking is $5 cash for day-use. Moderately strenuous, it's a 6-mile round trip with about 250 feet of vertical in both directions because the trail goes up and down continually in bits. The surface is sandy, sometimes deep and soft, and stone surfaces for clambering over. The creek runs all year, giving the trail a leafy-green, oasis-like feel, but sun exposure can be intense until late in the afternoon when the sun dips behind the western wall of the canyon. Carry plenty of water, and plan on 3-5 hrs. Good for fit and active families but probably not for most kids under 6.

There are Native American (Fremont culture AD 700-1300) anthropomorphic pictographs at trail marker #8 across the creek on the bottom of the eastern canyon wall about halfway through the hike. The plunge pool formed by the 130-foot falls is sandy and suitable for wading/swimming. We did not visit the campground. The trail may be too crowded at peak times for some tastes.

The canyon cuts through the massive White Cliffs of the "grand staircase" with ample red rocks for accent. The thick Navajo Sandstone and Kayenta Formations were originally sands deposited in a 200-million-year-old erg, or vast inland sand-sea, and the swooping textures preserved in the cross-sections through the rocks are slices through towering stacks of ancient, wind-driven (eolian) sand dunes.

hiked in the rain

By chuckChicago |

We hiked about 2/3 of the Lower Calf Creek Falls trail. It was a great change from hiking on slick rock as we did in several other areas. Part of the trail was sandy but that really wasn't a problem. We turned back when a thunderstorm rolled in and got somewhat wet on the way back to the parking area. Even with that, it was a great hike and we really recommend it.

Hike to hearts content

By Arby |

Hike for all with an amazing surprise at the end. Even those with bad knees can do this hike. Does get hot, so might want to go early if heat bothers you to late. But definitely worth doing.

Most pittoresque falls we ever visited

By Ruediger P |

One of the top items of our journey this june. Fortunately, it wasn't as hot as in 2017 when we, too, visited the Escalante area. It's an easy to maybe moderate hike, about three miles one way, the path has some humble ups and downs, it's partly sandy, and you'll walk in the sunlight almost all of the time. Start early, the best time to leave is about 8am, because the falls will be in the shade of the cliffs before noon, and there might be many visitors if you start late. There's a good guide you get at the trailhead, look out for the numbers on the posts on your way, especially for the pictographs on the other side of the canyon.

Easy and Rewarding Hike

By Erik W |

The Calf Creek Falls hike (six miles round trip) isn't particularly taxing and the falls are fabulous. Once at the falls, be sure to take off your shoes, walk on the sandy beach, and wade a bit in the cool (cold?) water.

Must see in escalante

By Josianne D |

Beautiful easy hike with fascinating rock formations and a big reward at the end. We went there early and had the waterfall to ourself.

A great hike to a beautiful oasis in the desert, Calf Creek Falls

By gopherhiker |

This hike starts at the Calf Creek campground about 14 miles east of Escalante right on Scenic Highway 12. The trailhead has bathrooms and a parking lot which can fill up.
The hike follows along the creek through beautiful layered sandstone cliffs and beaver ponds. There is even a spot where you can see some large pictographs across the valley. After about 3 miles you reach the stunning Lower Calf Creek Falls. Under the falls there is a beautiful pond that is swimmable although the water was very cold in April.
This is a spectacular hike with a great payoff at the end and I would highly recommend it.

Fun Walk, Just Reward

By Rose N |

We started this hike around 2-3 in the afternoon. Most people were leaving by then, so we didn't have long to wait to get a spot to park. $5 fee required at entrance to hike, place tab in car window. Fairly flat, almost anyone can do it....even kids. Nice walk. Pretty crowded even in off-season, but it was a Saturday. The falls are very pretty and they are in a 'semi-tropical' cove. Only about 6-10 people there when we arrived, so almost had it to ourselves. Probably wouldn't like it much if it was full of people. It took us about 2 1/2 hours round trip, but we didn't stay at the falls long. Even saw some petroglyphs on the way. Nice day hike, but not stellar. 3.5-4 stars.

The upper falls trek is also good

By Jmcc150 |

I did the Lower Calf Creek trail three years ago. If you have done neither the lower or upper trail, do the lower one. It is a very easy flat trail with a stunning waterfall and cold pool at the destination. The only advice, apart from urging you to do it, is to get there early to get the pool almost to yourself.

This year I did the trail to the top of the falls. The trail head is tricky to find even though I took careful note of the mileage along the road from Boulder.

You descend at least 500 feet. It does take long to get there, though you might take longer on the return.

As with the lower trail, take swimming gear. The jump into the upper pool must not be missed.

Highly enjoyable

Great waterfall

By AAleR |

Great hike to this waterfall - 12 km round trip. Parking is limited, so start early. Spectacular views and well worth the walk.

Desert Oasis

By Jennifer Gardne... F |

Perfect length for an active family, with something for everyone along the way. If it's hot (or even if it's not!) bring a couple sand toys and improvize a bucket or two and your kids will easily enjoy an hour or two on the sandy bank of the waterfall.

Great hike

By JANDDBritinParis |

Brilliant hike to a beautiful waterfall on an undulating track across rock and a sandy path for 3 miles each way (6 in total) . Very informative leaflet for sale at the trailhead for 50cents with numbered points along the way including large petroglyphs on the rock walls across the river and a 1000 year old granary
Slightly busy if you have to find a fault, but well well worth the effort especially if you need some exercise on the drive between Escalante and Boulder which incidentally is a beautiful drive

Amazing waterfall

By SwissMissSpokaneWA |

The hike is a little challenging due to heat and sand. About 50% of the trail is walking in sand. We are active and in good shape. It took us 90 min to go in and 75 min to come out. It's a pretty hike down in the canyon along a creek. Surprisingly green. The waterfall at the end makes it worth it!

Beautiful hike that ends at a waterfall. A must See.

By Dave L |

This is an easy to moderate (more on the easy side) 6 mile hike roundtrip. If the water at the end of the hike is warm enough you should consider bringing a swimsuit. It is at the Calf Creek Recreation Area between Escalante and Boulder.

Hiked to the lower lower falls

By karlruth |

it was a hot day and the hike was fun especially with the falls and cool pool at the end worth the hike.

Worth the walk

By Keith C |

Even on a hot day this is worth the effort. Slightly undulating but not all of track in the sun. The waterfall was wonderful and in a great setting

Lovely hike with a reward of beautiful falls at the end

By Sharon W |

This is a lovely hike through gorgeous mountains and past a river and beautiful yellow trees. At the end you are rewarded with the waterfall. It's an easy walk and I'd recommend taking a little picnic for the end - we sat eating our oranges listening and watching the waterfall - lovely.

Best Hike, long but the waterfall was really great.

By chiefbluehawk |

Prepare to have different footing, but a majority is in deep sand. The State Park if you parked in a certain parking lot or were camping had a charge, which we paid. It was really a neat hike. Make sure you grab a brochure that had 14 points that had markers and told a story. That just enhanced the trail experience. This trail is off Hwy 12 after Escalante towards Boulder Utah-maybe 12 miles. The scenery on Hwy 12 has many great lookouts.

Upper and lower falls both amazing!

By Matt W |

Went to upper falls for the first time have been to the lower calf creek many times. Upper falls is a scary confusing descent straight down that is around a mile in length. Once your down the top part has several huge swimming holes. A short hike from them is upper falls a 90 foot waterfall. Unlike lower falls it's not visited near as much because of the straight down hike. The surrounding area is covered in ferns and tons of trees so it is difficult to take pictures of. Great swimming area and small cliff diving at the upper pools.
Camp ground is nice had a bobcat come through our camp, lots of ants so beware. Caught several really small trout in the stream. Love the area also met discovery channels Matt Graham who frequents the area. Would recommend upper falls to thrill seekers and seasoned hikers with great boots. Kids and people afraid of heights stick to lower falls.

Fun, easy, and scenic hike

By Ross D |

Calf Creek Falls is known for the waterfall at the end but the hike up the canyon is also very pretty! The drive there also has a lot to see whether you come from the north or the west.

It's a hike that is good for kids and people of all ability levels. The trail is fairly well defined and there isn't anything too difficult. It's just around 6 miles round trip with with a slight elevation gain going up towards the falls. There are some side trails that go down to the creek along the way but it's heavily vegetated so there isn't much to see on those.

You start from the parking lot and head up the paved road until you see the trail veer off to the left at a trail sign. I wouldn't say it's the best trail in the area, Coyote Gulch and Peekaboo and Spooky are more fun IMO, but this one is the most accessible and is still a very enjoyable hike. I would definitely recommend it!

Great Family Hike

By Lisa F |

We hiked here in March. The falls at the end of the trail were stunning and totally worth the effort! Go early and take plenty of water and some snacks (or a picnic lunch). Most of the guides will say this is a flat hike and while you may start and end at the same elevation, there are some ups and downs. Not a difficult hike, though.

Worth the slog through loose sand and a thunderstorm!

By Eddieportland |

Nice, easy stroll through the canyon ending up at a cool waterfall. Actually, wicked cold, freezing, bone numbing chilly water flowing over the cliff! Would have been refreshing on a hot summer day!

Nice fairly easy hike.

By Rich-Gail |

The hike into Calf Creek Falls was a fairly easy hike. Pick up a brochure when you sign the trail register and stop at the numbered posts and follow along in the brochure. Lots of cool stuff to see that you probably would miss without reading the brochure.
The falls were beautiful and definitely worth the hike in.

Beautiful Hike

By Sasa |

We hiked the Lower Calf Creek Falls hike at 3:00 pm last week in 87 degrees. The parking lot was starting to clear out so we got a good spot. The hike was long and slightly up and down with sandy places that made walking sloppy. The high slick rock walls on both sides were spectacular. So many colorful wildflowers. The prize at the end of the three mile trek was a tall waterfall and cold pool for wading in a shady lunch spot. We saw a deer on the way back as the temperature lowered which made hiking more enjoyable. I hike a lot and this one was unusually tiring for me. I think the heat and sandy hiking took an early toll. I suggest hiking earlier than 9 am in order to avoid the heat and parking congestion.

First Time returning to Calf Creek Falls, will be back soon

By ParkCityPhotography |

A must for anyone visiting southern Utah, the hike to Calf Creek Falls was easy, but did have some climbing if you are a little unsteady on your feet. Amazing to see so many people making the climb.

Great Family Hike

By Loveoftheoutdoors |

We are not regular hikers and had not done any hiking all winter so we were a little out of shape. We took this hike before taking the steep Queen's Garden Trail in Bryce Canyon National Park because it was suppose to be a flat hike according to other reviews. It is somewhat flat but there are some areas where you do have to hike up a bit. It was the perfect starter hike of the season (March 30).

It took us about 3 hours to hike it round trip. That does not include our half hour lunch break at the waterfall. It was a beautiful spot to sit and relax for lunch. The beach area was clean and so was the water. The water was ice cold so we were not able to enjoy the water pool. If we had hiked this in the middle of summer I know we would have enjoyed a cool dip in the water pool.

We started about 7:30am and by the time we were heading back it was getting pretty hot in the canyon. Make sure to bring plenty of water if you do this hike in the summer. We saw several families with empty water bottles before reaching the waterfall. Do not rely on getting your water bottles filled from the stream. The water looked clear and clean but I would not drink it. There were several people with dogs who were running in the stream. We know dogs won't hold back when they need to go to the restroom.

It was a nice hike and I would recommend doing this one before heading to Bryce Canyon. If we had done this one after having hiked Bryce Canyon I think we would have been pretty disappointed.

Others had suggested arriving early because the parking lot fills up quickly. It was a very good tip and I would recommend the same. We arrived at about 7:30am and there were a few parking spots left. When we left around 1pm the parking lot was full and all along the road from the main highway down to the parking lot.

We had read that there is a $10 day use fee but when we arrived the sign said a $5 day use fee. It is an honor system, you place money in an envelope provided by the trail sign and slip it into the slot box.

Great walk along Creek

By HJO123 |

Nice walk along Creek to reach waterfalls. See some wildlife along the way. Best time is early in the morning, both because of the heat and because there will be a lot of hikers later in the day who you will encounter on your way back on the sometimes narrow path. But still: nice trail.

What beautiful hike

By Renee C |

We hiked into the waterfalls and though it was a long hike it was worth it. The falls were stunning and the water was cold. The hike to the falls was a fairly easy hike, there were a few challenging points but nothing me and my flip flops couldn't handle. I highly recommend this hike if your in the area. It was great for the kids because there was a nice reward (the cold water) at the end of the trail.

Dogs ruined it

By Karen J |

We hiked down to Upper Calf Creek Falls. The hike itself and the falls are pretty. The reason I've rated it only average is because of the dogs. Dogs are allowed in the area but are supposed to be on 6-foot leashes. We ran into three dogs when we were there. None of them were on leashes. And some of them were a bit aggressive. The real problem, though, is that when dogs have the urge to take a crap, they do it wherever they happen to be. And when they’re not by their owners, the owners don’t know what’s happened and can’t clean it up. Even worse, people go to this area to spend time in the water – as do the dogs. Which means that we were all wading and swimming in the dogs’ bathroom. I found it disgusting.

BEST HIKE

By livingthedreampa |

This was a 3 mile hike in and 3 mile out. Well worth the trip. It is for easy to moderate hikers. The falls at the end is worth the trip

This is the lower falls

By Linda P |

There is also upper falls which pops up on GPS a lot. This site is lower at a camping area with bathrooms and well marked trail. Parking fills quickly, very popular. but parking seems allowed all up drive and out to main road. A total of 5 miles is listed (2.5 each way) but it seemed further- the falls and shallow lake at end are worth it, the printed guide explains the route, with wildlife, trout, pictographs, river, and ancient food shelters visible on cliff tops part of walk. Try to avoid the "social" trails made by wanderers- there are markers and arrows. They will lead you off trail to dead ends. We saw three groups having to back track as they got stuck above the actual trail. Sound carries and we could hear them working it out.

Awesome

By donzo1997 |

An easy 3 mile hike (1 way) to one of the most beautiful falls I have ever seen. We started at about 7 am in the morning so we got to enjoy the falls for about 45 min. all to ourselves.

Lower Calf Creek Falls is a must see!

By Robert L |

This is the most popular trail in the area for good reason - the Falls is an incredible oasis and the walk is a fairly easy 6 miles round trip in a beautiful canyon.

Great stop over.

By William P |

I have been wanting to get here for awhile and finally had opportunity. Had a nice site along the stream and camped there a couple of days. The host was very cognizant of who was camping and took good care of the sites. The best part was the hike and the waterfall. After the hot hike the waterfall was extremely refreshing. Definitely worth the time and would visit again.

So beautiful

By danelle68 |

It was a beautiful hike to lower Calf creek falls ! Totally worth the distance. The entire trek was beautiful. You don't see this in New Jersey.
Loved every twist and turn.
Saw the petroglyphs. How amazing !

Good half day hike; Bring $5!!!

By Emergmedpa |

This is a good hike for a half day. The trail is relatively flat, shaded in areas, and well marked. My wife and I arrived mid-morning and made the hike to the falls in about 75 minutes. The fall are a perfect spot for a picnic lunch and shaded siesta. I imagine that in the summer months the water can be quite refreshing.

It's important that you bring $5 for the parking fee. We did not know this in advance and had to scramble to find $5, ultimately borrowing a $1 from another couple. There is a campground host that might have change if he/she is on duty, but that person might also have your vehicle towed if you don't have the money.

Sand Sand Sand then a Fabulous Waterfalls

By C&E |

While relatively a flat trail, much of it is thru 6-12" deep sand, which makes it fell like you're going up much of this time. But the payoff, the falls and pool, are worth it. Only a few brave souls when in above their navel, but many waded to their ankles and realized that was cold enough. The air temp. was in the 80s. Get the trail guide at the trailhead or GSE visitor center and look for the numbered sights. Bring binocs to see the petroglyphs. Moderate usage, about 10-15 people at the pool during my lunch.

Lovely family-friendly hike

By tallmich |

Loved this hike! Elevation gain and loss is small but there is a lot of loose sand to add to the difficulty of this hike. Those in our party who wore ankle socks regretted it because the sand was in their shoes and socks. I wore hiking socks (tall and thick) and loved my experience.

Most of the hike is in the sun and there is not much shade so start early in the morning or late afternoon. Even in the spring this hike can be really hot so be sure you bring plenty of water. Inside the hike register at the trail head are free maps/trail guides to help you understand what the numbered trail markers represent. Bring sandals for wading in the pool beneath the falls at the end.

Bring $5 cash to pay for parking charge. Payment was made by leaving the cash in an envelope and a receipt in your car. There is limited parking and it is shared with the campground users.

We brought a four year old with us and she had difficulty with the hike, requesting to be carried most of the time. Our 8 year old was slow but able to make the full ~6 miles. Only bring kids who are fairly tough and adventurous.

The waterfall was spectacular

By laurelrock |

This hike is often rated easy. I think it's more accurate to say that it's moderate. It's a really fun hike, but the trail is often covered with soft, somewhat deep sand. The last third of the hike back at the end of a warm day I was really dragging. The falls were so beautiful that it was worth the effort, but know what to expect. Also, the parking lot fills up fairly early, so add another half mile to the distance if you have to park along the road.

Pretty hike

By Running4me |

Prepare yourself for a beautiful and relatively easy 6.5 mile hike. The total distance is about 6.5 miles. The path is well defined and there are number markers along the route that identify natural and historically significant features.

Great hike

By TexasTravelers |

Excellent hike. Some climbing, but this was a doable 6 mile round trip hike for older adults at a normal fitness level. Great rock formations, with the creek close by. The Falls is absolutely gorgeous.

A Hike Full of Surprises

By TracyCoe |

My family of four really enjoyed all the different elements of this hike. A beautiful river, diverse hiking path, petroglyphs, and the gorgeous waterfall at the end. My kids (13 and 11) never once complained about the distance or boredom as the informative brochure had us stopping at points along the way to see and learn about the amazing area.

Great waterfall on a hot day

By karen m |

The end of this hike is worth the three mile trek. Beautiful cool waterfall and swimming area. We did this on an extremely hot day and I would recommend that you go either early morning or wait until late day. The hike does not have much shade and a good deal of the trip is in sand.

cool hike, wonderful finale

By mickmimi |

After dinner one evening, my wife and I decided to take an evening hike at Calf Creek Falls Recreation Area. It was a very warm evening (in the 90's) at we started around 7:45 pm. The hike to the falls is very cool It's about 3 miles from the campground parking lot to the falls. There are 14 markers (signs) along the trail; the falls are at marker 14. The hike isn't difficult, but make sure to bring lots of water. It's a cool hike. At times you are walking on the rocks, other times on packed dirt, and a lot of loose sand. Sometimes, the trail narrows, as it goes through the vegetation by the creek. It's amazing as you look up at the huge stone cliffs, and winding creek, and finally, the falls, which must go up 100 feet. We did see a couple deer near the trail, and my wife almost stepped on a snake that slithered on the trail. There are no restrooms along the trail, so just keep that in mind before you leave the campgrounds. It took us about an hour to hike each way, but we did stop and take many pictures. Awesome hike!

Awesome views easy hike

By Raretravelo |

The parking area was a challenge so we parked up top. Restrooms were nice. Hike was easy mostly sandy a few small hills/rocks. We saw quite a few people doing the hike barefooted. 3 mikes in and 3 out. We saw quite a few things going in (ancient graffiti, old car than came off cliff, trout in the stream) and then the waterfall. We left about noon took / ate lunch there and was back to car by 4. It was so beautiful. Definitely do this again if in area

Beautiful Fall, moderate hike

By vanbgiang |

It was 3 miles hike to the fall, narrow trail with little sandy. Very easy to walk, just a few climb on the rock. The view of the fall is the reward for hiker. Water was cold in Oct, but very calm. There is flat area in front of the fall, perfect for picnic

Moderate difficulty hike

By alangBonitaSprings |

The hike to the falls is about 2 hours each way It is a little dicey at the very beginning. However the bulk of the hike is just long and in the heat you have to plan. The falls is just magnificent and the cold water is a treat when you finally get there. It is beautiful country to hike.

More of a Hike Than You Think - But Worth It

By MikeB1952 |

The trail is pretty neat. It’s in a canyon that goes back away from the road. It travels along Calf Creek, a small, pretty little stream. The canyon walls climb high above the creek on both sides. There is some indication of Native American presence. The trail is sandy. Very sandy. Very fine sand sandy. It wasn’t hard to walk on. But certainly took more energy than a solid path. Generally, it wasn’t bad. And for much of the hike the trail ran rather close to the creek. But . . . and this is a big But, the trail ran up and down the sides of the canyon. There were numerous places where the trail climbed steeply over rather tall rocks (always a lot of rocks) where we had to take big steps up and big steps down to get over the rocks. Sometimes it was on solid rock. The steep places were both challenging and tiring. Overall, this was one of the most strenuous hikes we’ve taken in the last few years.

There are numerous features along the trail. BLM has developed a Trail Guide that points out several of them – some pictographs and several granaries all made by Native people long ago.

Oh, and the falls? Really neat. They fall in a mist over the side of the cliff top into a large pond. As one hiker noted, it’s a lot cooler at the falls than on the trail. We were tired. But marveled at the falls.

Fun hike, be prepared

By DaBiZi |

The signs say 3 miles in and 3 miles out. It was probably 3.5. Nice hike, good for teenagers. There are plenty of steps.
It also is at 5500 feet, so take it slow of you aren't from there. Bring water. The main bathroom is closed off season.

Stunning hike

By Beachglass1006 |

Did the 6.5 mi!e, RT hike to the falls. Is a moderate trail With rocks to get over, roots, up and down, slogging thru dry sand, very tiring, but amazingly beautiful, Red Rock canyon walls, Navajo Sandstone, a lush creek bottom to the falls! Can even swim in, but water is cold! Equivalent to a 10k mild obstacle course. No matter weather, bring water, sunscreen and hats! Bring a picnic lunch for at the falls.

Fun family hike!

By mygoodwinfamily |

This is a 6 mile round trip hike that is great for families. There isn't much of an elevation change and the view of the falls was spectacular! Definite must-see for all of the family!

Great family hike!

By Dardi_Girl |

So much fun to have a nice fall and pool to play in during our hike. Was a very popular place but definitely worth the hike.

Never dissapointing

By parisryan |

I love this hike and have been doing it for 40 years. I love the swim to the icy cold falls after emptying the sand out of my shoes. It never gets old and makes me feel like a kid again. The views from the trail are fantastic.

Gorgeous falls at the end of a beautiful hike

By 319MKing |

This is one of the most beautiful hikes I have taken. It is long (around six miles round-trip), but a very rewarding experience. Take plenty of water and stop along the way to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

An amazing hike leads to a piece of paradise.

By jaymb49 |

We went to Upper Calf Creek trail and found the climb down into the canyon and back up again quite challenging but worth the effort.

A little long.

By David E |

Calf Creek is a nice waterfall of cold water at the end of a 4 mils long canyon right off the road. The trail is very sandy and can feel pretty long on a hot day. There can be crowds at the falls.

Lower Calf Creek Falls

By Debbie |

My daughter and I spent a week in southern Utah and we hiked Lower Calf Creek Falls. It was beautiful and an easy trail. We camped there as well. Flush toilets and potable water supply. Nice campsite but pretty chilly in late October.

beautiful oasis in the desert

By Kathy W |

Its a bit of a hot and dusty hike if you don't go early in the day, but it's cool and refreshing when you get to the falls. They are beautiful and a great place to wade and cool off your feet. Parking is a bit of a challenge as the day goes on too so another reason to go early.

Beautiful hike, not as easy as thought

By MSanchez |

Our group of 10 hiked this beautiful trail during our visit in Utah. We were 4 adults, 4 teens/preteen (18, 17, 16, 12) and a 5 and 3 year old. Here's my honest review:
1. Get there early, parking is limited. Place your annual pass on your dash, if you don't have an annual pass, take cash, it's a $5 parking fee.
2. Forget the jogging or any kind of stroller, it won't work.
3. 6 mile round trip hike with the most beautiful scenery the entire time.
4. I wouldn't rate this easy. It's more of a moderate hike. A lot of incline going towards the waterfall, the way back was a lot easier. It took us 2 hrs going and 1hr 10min back.
5. 80% of the hike is on super soft SAND, you will get tired, take it slow.
6. The hike is worth every sweat and knee discomfort you will feel. Waterfall is beautiful!! Extremely cold water to cool you off after hiking in 115 degrees.
Remember, this is the desert. We had a rattlesnake get trapped into the waterfall from above and landed in the swimming hole, luckily, one of the swimmers alerted us all.
Also, 2 days before our arrival, there were signs informing hikers that mountain lions were seen on the trail. Be aware, be safe, keep hydrated, take lots of pix and enjoy this beautiful hike!

Upper Calf Creek Falls

By Globetrekkiegirl |

We had hiked the Lower Calf Creek Falls 3 years ago, which is a level trail with no difficulties. Last summer we decided to hike to the Upper falls.
The parking lot to the trailhead can be accessed between mile markers 80 and 81 of the Route 12. You have to go down (150 m difference in altitude altogether) on some slickrock, so it's best to have sturdy shoes.
The terrain is steep so beware.
On the other hand, there are a lot of cairns on the slickrock, so there is not a good chance of getting lost.
We ran into several people who camped by the Falls and who went up in the morning.
There is also a sandy part during the hike, and no shade at all, be prepared to be hot.
We began to hear the water, and when arriving down, chose to go left, and arrived at the foot of the falls.
We had a break there, enjoying the view, before going back to the parking lot.
We had preferred the Lower Falls, but this one is rewarding too

Worth it!

By Erda73 |

We visited this beautiful waterfall 2 days ago. We traveled from Torrey just to do this hike. Took SR 12, beautiful scenic drive but made me( someone with occasional motion sickness) a bit quesy because of the winding and mostly one lane road. The path to the waterfall was easy to follow and enjoyable. We started our hike around 3 pm, took us almost 3 hours for the hike itself. The weather was around 80 degree, not too bad, the occasional wind and shade made-up for it. Don't forget to bring swimwear.

A great walk in the desert.

By RLHikers |

Lower Calf Creek falls is a beautiful oasis in the desert. Great hike, easy terrain, and a wonderful reward at the end of the trail...a cool refreshing misty waterfall. There as trout active in calf creek easily spotted as you walk on the trail. Tip: get there early in the day or early in the season to avoid the heat.

Don't Miss This!

By Beanie1948 |

This is a spectacular hike through a canyon of beautiful rock formations, some along stream beds and ponds. It was hot in the summer which made it a tad tiring but worth ever step once you reach the waterfall. It was refreshingly cool and magnificent at the foot of the falls. Plenty of room to picnic, relax, play and swim in the icy cold waters. Perfect way to enjoy Nature at her finest!! Go prepared with water, sunscreen, comfortable shoes, a hat and a picnic if you are so inclined. You won't regret making the effort!

Awesome Destination Hike

By LM4U2 |

Its not free, and there are a lot of people, but its still a wonderful experience. 6 mile hike in and out, $5 per vehicle. There is a brochure at the trailhead to help you learn about the area and see pictographs. The trailhead also has several shaded picnic tables, flush toilets, and water. The hike is hot but good for dogs that are used to hiking, because you can dunk them in the river frequently along the way. Please pick up after your dog so dogs can keep coming to this area. At the end, a gorgeous falls, beach, and pool; perfect for a picnic. Return the way you came.

6/19/17 HOT and sandy trail, take lots of water, excellent pond at the end!!

By grboston01 |

This is a long hot trail in the summer, recommend umbrella and lots of water. The roughly 3 mile in and 3 mile out is 75% on deep sandy trail, with very spotty shade. That said this will always be a memorable hike as the beautiful pond and waterfall that awaits you is AWESOME. Water is cold and refreshing. To get the most out of your hike try the short swim to the base of the waterfall, an absolute thrill. Oh yes... DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG in the heat, please, for their sake.

Beautiful hike bring tons of water

By Tim A |

This was my favorite hike during our trips to Zion, Bryce and the surrounding area. The scenery along the entire hike is beautiful with big cliffs on both sides. The hike was fairly flat. Just ups and downs here and there. It is mostly exposed to the sun during the time we started around midday. So in June it was really hot! There are warnings about the amount of water you need - don’t discount those warnings. Bring at least two liters each. Also the trail has a lot of sandy patches and those of us wearing sandals got hot feet so hiking or running shoes are better. Our younger kids, 8 and 11, were worn out after the trip to the falls but rebounded for the trip back which was more shaded because of the time of day.

The payoff was this amazing waterfall. Not only the waterfall was beautiful but the pool was in shade and very cool because of the surrounding cliffs. Everyone cooled down, but not everyone swam because the water was really cold. Our teenage loves the challenge of the cold and swimming against the current to the fall. Have fun on this trip!

Hint: we saw a dog that seemed to be suffering because of the hot sand on its paws so maybe keep the dogs off this trail in the heat of the day.

Beat the heat

By Roy B |

The Campground at the trailhead was full so we stayed in the Boulder mts. We arrived at the trail next morning and began our hike at 8am. All tracks indicated we were the first ones that day. Just so you know, the lead hiker finds all spider webs across the trail. Trail is very sandy with some rocky patches, but not much elevation change. Remember the trail guide, (I forgot ours) so you can reference the numbered posts for facts along the way. Our small dog made the 3 mile walk in with no trouble. Please clean up after your pets. This seems a hard concept for some to understand. Overall the trail was very clean with no trash. I expected to see some, considering the volume of hikers, but all was clean. We did the return hike around 12 and the temp was up in the 80s. Dog made it 1 mile before his feet got hot in the sand. He got a ride. Be sure to bring plenty of water, and maybe even an umbrella. The falls at the end are amazing. A nice cool oasis. Enjoy.

Very Challenging for novice hikers but still doable, bring a lot of water/fluids to drink.

By mbc737 |

We hadn't properly researched this hike and despite bringing a lot of fluids, it still was barely enough for the 3 of us. Our 7 year old started whining straight away. My son loved the falls and was a lot more pleasant and jovial on the hike back to our car. If you aren't a regular hiker it's still do-able. I'd recommend doing smaller hikes for awhile before doing this, though, in order to build up your stamina. If you plan to wear your baby in a carrier you may want to wait until that baby is old enough to hike it alongside you. I just know that for me personally it was difficult enough to hike I couldn't imagine at my current skill level wearing a baby, maybe it's fine if you wear your baby on hikes often and are used to the added weight. I will say as someone who has seen Akaka Falls in Hawaii, this waterfall wasn't as cool as Akaka Falls but it's still pretty.

An amazing hike

By BeckyandScott |

I am speechless about a previous review that said "Also there is very little in scenic value along the way." This hike rivals a hike in Zion National Park, with less crowds. If hiking amid towering, gorgeous rock formations has no scenic value, then I don't know what does.

We saw a few young children on the hike; I would recommend this hike for older kids. It is long, and can be hot. We were there after a spring snowstorm and it was cool and sunny, just perfect, and it still wore us out. It took us 3.5 hours.

Very nice hike, but very crowded

By Woodman1 |

This is an easy interpretive hike to a waterfall. Pay $5 to park in the lot and start the hike from there. There isn't much elevation gain and the views are nice. The only downside is the shear amount of people on this hike. We prefer less popular hikes.

Start EARLY, bring WATER

By HeikeJo |

Late June, we started at 8:15 but should have started earlier. 3 miles in to the falls, not technical hiking but wear open sandals or hiking boots. 30% is fine beach-type sand. Last mile in IN THE MORNING is shaded. Bring enough water. Falls and pool are worth it. Don't do this hike mid-day in summer months. Too hot. Start early.

Very nice walk

By vwmiked |

beautiful walk along the creek. Sand is very hot for dog's feet in summer though! Good swinming at the end!

Amazing hike to Little Calf Falls

By Eric A |

Wow! About three miles into the falls from the parking lot....interesting trail, lots of greenery, beautiful red canyon walls to look at as you walk...eye candy on the way to a beautiful water fall...can't say enough good about the hike! Just gorgeous! Can I give it six stars?

PS - if in summer...heed the warnings about taking enough drinking water..

Clean trail

By Ron R |

Take time to grab a map and enjoy the interpretive part of the trail. If you don't you will pass up the Peytroglyphs and the Granaries.

Lovely Canyon with Petroglyphs

By Kevin P |

The walk is a flat 3 miles each way, so can be done in 3-4h. I'd advise to do this in the morning at this time of the year to avoid the afternoon thunderstorms! We saw a lotta people getting trashed who didn't follow this advice lol.

Along the way there is a series of stations (12?) where the trail guide explains various features. The Petroglyphs, even though they are 400 yards away on the other side of the canyon, are huge! One of the highlights of this walk (plus the falls at the end).

Easy Hike, Amazing Experience

By Panda_Tendy |

Absolutely an amazing view sits at the end of this moderate 5.8 mile round-trip hike through Calf Creek's canyons. A hidden gem I will hike again. Just be VERY AWARE of the very real threat of flash flooding and be prepared to head to higher ground in a hurry. The falls are worth the hike!

Worth the hike

By D Schultz II |

My wife, sister in law and I made the hike to Calf Creek Falls on my 30th birthday. While the hike was over 100* and the terrian rough, the breathtaking views of the falls made it all worth it. The water was sooo cold and refreshing I could only go in waste deep. i would highly recommend making the trip to Calf Creek Falls

Wonderful Hike!

By Elizabeth1756 |

The trail follows Calf Creek to a 126 ft. tall falls. The hike is 6 miles round trip. There is little elevation change, but the trail is sandy, which can prove difficult at times..The steep canyon walls on each side make wonderful views. Once you get to the falls, it's cool and shady and quite a few people were cooling off in the water! We thoroughly enjoyed it!

Amazing hike. Refreshing water fall. Take lots of water.

By Morgan D |

This is not a hike to take lightly. I don't crossfit but I'm also not in bad shape and this was a workout. Much of the hike is over soft sand on the path so it adds to the workout. Take LOTS of water. It gets hot. The trail map gives you details about the markers along the path. They are not evenly spaced so don't use them for distance. Lots to see so the trip up took longer than the trip down. Stop and look at marker #8. You can easily see the pictographs. Early June and the water at the water fall was chilly but there were people swimming. I'm 52 years old so......no! I don't need to prove myself anymore. The walls on the fall side are slippery. Be careful. I did see one guy run really fast and run around the wall and dive in. Got a great slow motion video of this. Go early as the crowds start showing up around noon. We got down about 230 and there wasn't a parking spot to be had. Also, this is not a hike for small kids unless they are used to this kind of hike. I did see many people taking the small ones up but they weren't happy. It's hot, it's long and you may end up carrying them back down. Then you will be unhappy too.

Reasonable hike with surprise at end

By Marilyn B |

The very cool waterfall at trail's end is the reward at the end of this hike. Kids like to take a dip in the pond under the waterfall. Only minus is that about half of trail is in deep sand so if you dislike that, it can be a slog. Much of the hike does offer shady areas from time to time. Nice info guide for numbered markers along the way regarding flora and fauna, petroglyphs, etc. Get there before 11 or 12 as parking is limited and this area is popular.

Lower Calf Creek hike

By Carmen1981 |

What's not to like about this hike? Nothing strenuous, but just enough up and down to keep it interesting. Beautiful peaceful hike and beautiful waterfall! We couldn't have picked a better time. Met one couple on their hike out, then we were at the falls alone for about 15 minutes. Stayed long enough for someone else to come along and take our picture. Water was super cold, but I could just imagine on a hot day how refreshing that would be! Picnic area had plenty of tables for a quiet lunch afterwards.

Busy busy busy

By noparamour |

Summer time it's a very hot hike and very busy. Chances are your great pic will have several other families in it. Well worth nonetheless.
Bring a ton of water. A trick is to wet all your clothes before hiking out. That makes the first mile much cooler.

Worth the time

By Marcine C |

We loved this hike. Although, there is a small parking lot. You need to get here early because of that. There is a picnic area which we took advantage of, too. Get a brochure for the hike because there are some pictographs on the trail on a faraway mountain that you will miss if you don't know they are there. I used my zoom lens to find the 3 figures on the side of the sheer wall. It is a 5 1/2 mile hike that I would consider easy. It is a warm hike UNTIL you get to the falls and it is cold then. I was in shorts and froze at the falls. We took snacks to eat while we observed that falls. A nice place for a snack or lunch. Just take out your garbage, please so that it will stay clean. It was well worth the time.

Hot hike, but very nice

By gogotom |

We didn't know anything about this hike before we set off. It's a nice out and back in a beautiful canyon. The waterfall at the end is really beautiful. There are a lot of interesting things to see along the way. There is a very nice interpretive guide available at the trailhead (where you sign in on the trail).

Wet and Fun

By Jessica W |

This is a family favorite. We (especially my kids 7, 6, 3, 1) love hiking up the creek. It is shallow and wide with trees that reach overhead making you feel like your going through a watery tunnel. You can spot fish rushing past your feet.

Walk to the waterfall

By naturetack |

One of those hikes where you hear the waterfall long before you see it, but the waterfall is so worth it! It's a serene reward to your trek. Great for a morning walk.

Beautiful falls

By gumchain |

The hike out to the falls is about 6 miles round trip and took us about 4 hours to do. The falls is definitely worth it as they are gorgeous! The hike has numbered trail markers and a pamphlet that goes along with it. They show you things like the petroglyphs and granaries along the way. We recommend picking up the trail guide and following along. The trail has some ups and downs, and I would rate it moderate to moderate-strenuous. It is very sunny and warm to hike during the summer day.

EASY TRAIL AND NICE FALLS

By Carlos T |

Drive from Escalante to the trail entrance, and then walk this easy path, along the creek, then reach the falls and enjoy a cool bath on the pool (bring your bath suit); bring drink and food, and relax there.

Easy trail to beautiful waterfall at end!

By Karma&me |

Although the trail was a bit crowded we were happy we explored Calf Creek Falls. The fairly easy walk wove through vegetation and rock with a lovely waterfall at the end.

Beautiful Hike!

By t2abl |

Prepare to walk long distances in sand, but the falls are worth the work. Took some beautiful photos of the falls and enjoyed a picnic lunch there.

Great easy hike to beautiful falls

By Jim I |

Lots of parking at trailhead. Well marked fairly easy trail for a 4-5 Mike round trip hike. Beautiful falls with a nice wading depth pool below is the pay off on a hot day.

Nice walk

By Elad B |

Beautiful canyon, the guide is interesting with numbered posts along the way like in a museum ;-). The fall is impressive too, and don't miss the inscriptions on the wall

Moderate walk and lovely falls

By Chantal P |

We got the tip to hike this trail to the waterfalls and I am glad we did. Go out early. We started around 9 am to beat the heat and the crowds and I can only recommend it. We had the waterfalls to ourselves for at least 30 min. We we hiked back the crowds started to come in and temperature had risen.
We are not regular hikers but the track is in good shape. Some parts have loose sand which makes it a bit harder than an easy track. It's about 1.5 hours one way.

Lovely hike

By marcia h |

This is a must do, if you are in the grand staircase national monument. It is easily accessed and a nice walk for all abilities. We were there on a cool day, but on a hot day the water could be a nice treat.

get there early for a beautiful hike

By john t |

this is one of the more popular hikes in the area. I'd go early, before some of the tour buses arrive, especially if you are a fast hiker. The pay off at the end of the hike (the falls) is spectacular. The path in is fun too--lots of beaver dams and riparian landscape.

A GREAT FAMILY ADVENTURE!

By Gleason L |

This is one of the best hikes in the Escalante Area. It is an easy 6 miles roundtrip hike with something new and spectacular around every bend. The falls are 120 feet tall and have a large pool of refreshing cool water which beckons the weary hiker's feet. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy the BEAUTY all around you. There are no facilities, amenities, restrooms, or trash cans at the falls, so you must pack whatever you bring in, out with you. Check with the Camp Host for conditions on the trail before you hike. There is a $5.00 required parking fee payable at the trailhead. A small campground is also available for those who are looking to stay overnight.

Nice hike

By Connie S |

Beautiful hike and beautiful falls, but of course, heavily traveled. It is a nice easy day trip with a refreshing water fall & pool to relax near for lunch.

Amazing!

By Mark Vetock |

A beautiful 6 mile round trip hike to a beautiful waterfall! The trail is fairly easy but its sandy and some rocks along the way. Make sure you wear good shoes. There's not much parking so plan on getting there early.

4hr hike. Plenty to see. Easy enough for kids

By Brutus R |

Fun time with the kids. Some options for climbing but not necessary to complete the hike. Falls were beautiful. Good hike for a warm February.

A long walk in the hot sun.

By photoguywisconsin |

The falls at the end of the trail are pretty. These are probably the only falls in 100 miles. However, the trail itself is a long walk in the hot sun. There is virtually no shade. Also there is very little in scenic value along the way. You are rarely walking along the creek during the entire hike. The hike involves lots of walking in sand. Much of the trail is sand. If you're going to do this hike on a warm day, hike early or later in the day. I think that Calf Creek is the sort of place one should go if they have time and have never been here before. Otherwise, I think there some other places that provide a better use of your time. I should mention it took us 3-4 hours to complete this hike without any time at the falls.

Great Hike, start early

By Rashell S |

We started hiking around 7:30 am. This was nice as we saw hardly anyone on the trail and were able to spend some time at the falls before the crowds got there. My husband jumped in even though the water was so cold! The falls were beautiful and well worth the hike. The hike took us about 3.5 hours round trip. We stayed at the falls for a little over a half hour. We passed many groups going out and it got hotter as the day went. Pack plenty of water.

Great first hike of the season.

By Colleen C |

We saw this hike was rated as moderately strenuous. However, we would rate it as easy/moderate. I guess it depends on the type of terrain you usually hike. The view of the falls, canyons walls, and river are beautiful. It's a 6 mile round trip easily accessible hike - a good first hike as you begin your stay in the Escalante area.

Nice Hike and Beautiful Waterfall

By David N |

The Meandering Canyon is quite scenic. Wildlife are all around. We saw a few deer, and some unusual birds in the stream. We hiked this trail in the winter when there was frozen ice in the stream, and that made for some interesting photographs. It is a very easy trail for beginners.

Great reward for a mild hike in

By Peter L |

What a great sight! The hike in is moderate due to the fine sand, but otherwise a fairly easy hike to do. Parents had little kids with them and they all managed fine on a 85+ degree day. The falls are refreshing so do not forget to bring a swimsuit in order to take a cool dip.

3 miles hike each way

By Rebecca |

If you use the All Trails app, read the info along the path. Lots of really cool facts including pictographs you wouldn’t really spot otherwise. Hike is pretty easy, sandy path so use hiking shoes not tennis shoes with mesh!!! At the waterfall there are plenty of trees so bring your hammock for a place to sit and have lunch! It’s cold and windy at the water, but not if you go to the far sides. We had a large group, about 30 kids ranging in ages 1-18 and everyone loved it!

Beautiful falls and hike, no water along the way so plan ahead

By ChiquiMonster |

We took my 74 year old father on this hike and it was a little much for him so it took us about 6 hours instead of 3 or so. It's not too hilly but there are some slopes, it's sandy and it's unpaved. And there is no water along the way. But the prize of the falls is totally worth it! Just bring lots of water and plan your time accordingly.

Gorgeous Hike, but can be crowded

By Cynthia H |

This is a must see if you are in the area. The falls are an easy flat hike in. The length of the hike may keep some who aren't used to walking more than 3 miles from seeing the beautiful waterfall. Take water and a hat and sunscreen. Hike early in the day during the hotter seasons. Its a beautiful place even in the winter when the crowds are absent. Wear appropriate shoes!

Great hike

Loved hiking to the falls. Beautiful hot day made it even better to get under the falls.. the hike is in the sun so make sure to go early on a hot day

WORTH THE HIKE

By douieaces |

This review is for normal tourists. Not the young people who walk in sandals, run the trail or hike 10 miles easily and always pass me on the trail.
This trail is not EASY. There are at least a dozen up and down areas over rocks.
I saw a lot of people very ill prepared. No hat, a half bottle of water at the beginning, sandals, no pack. FYI: A 5 year old will have problems here. So will out of shape people. Some dogs did not do well. ( Some dogs were awesome).
All that being said, the end results is really, really cool. So refreshing. Ice water cold and stunningly beautiful.
I highly recommend this trail. Just treat it with some respect and be prepared.

Awesome Waterfall In The Desert Southwest

By photohiker |

There are not many good waterfalls in the desert southwest, but this is one of them. A 3-mile hike from the parking area to Lower Calf Creek Falls. Scenic trail, but not much shade until you reach the falls. Lower Calf Creek Falls is 126 feet tall. A great place to cool off.

Nice hike to Impressive Fall

By peninsulalover65 |

We hiked this early in the morning with our teenage sons. It was relatively a pretty easy hike with little elevation. The waterfall at the end with the pool makes it so worthwhile. Bring plenty of water for everyone because you will need it. About 2.5 miles there and another 2.5 miles back. (Total of about 5 miles round trip) One of my favorite hikes of our vacation.

Nice hike

By Jane V |

Very nice 3 mile round trip hike. Gets a little hot but half way to the falls, there is a creek where you can cool off and get wet. It definitely helps. Bring plenty of water. It's a must. Coming back is easier, especially if you take a dip by the falls.

Be prepared to be astonished at the Falls. Hike had some elevation but doable. Suggest hiking sticks - exposure at times.

Medium hike to nice waterfall.

By Danny R |

I do think this hike is a little over 3 miles each way. It's fairly easy on mostly sand. I went on a rainy day and there are a few slippery spots along the way. With the rain we were lucky enough to see many more waterfalls appear high in the cliffs from the fresh rain fall. Expect to spend half a day for this hike unless you want to be in hurry.

great hike and cool swim

By RP-Netherlands |

We hike to calf creek falls in early June. The hike was a little over 3 miles, without any major elevation. It is easy to find and the path is well worn so you can't get lost. Because we started our hike aroung 11 am, it wasn't too busy when we got to the falls. The scenery on the way was amazing, and the falls were awesome. Due to a lot of rain and snowfall late in the spring, the river was high and the falls were big. The water was freezing, but we just could not leave without a swim. So we did swim, which was refreshing and enjoyable for a short while. Verdict: great hike with a beautiful waterfall as a bonus and a cool swim to top it off.

A Must Do

By noeybear |

The drive to and from this trailhead is crazy! It's absolutely beautiful but there is a lot of steep switchbacks with no railing. On the scenic byway to Capitol Reef, we saw cows in the road, countless deer, moose, elk, rabbits, and a kitten.

Now, on to the lower calf creek falls hike... We arrived to the trailhead about 4:30pm. Our plan was to arrive much earlier but we were delayed. We completed the hike in 2.5 hours. One hour to get there, 30 min at the falls, and then one hour back. We hiked fast and took no breaks. Our motivation was to complete the hike with some daylight left. We only saw few other hikers. Maybe because we started so late? It was very hot and we drank all of our water (3L each). When we finally got to the falls it was very emotional. It was beautiful and breathtaking. I enjoyed this much more than the national parks. It's a must do.

easy to moderate hike with wonderful scenery throughout.

By Terry D |

easy to moderate hike with wonderful scenery throughout.ugged landscape receives far less visitors than the big national parks in Utah, and definitely offers a sense of remoteness. Paved and dirt roads, where a person can drive great distances without ever passing another car, are all part of the attraction of Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. The scenery is a mix of canyons, arches, hills, waterfalls, forest, and scrubland.

This trail is a must do!The scenery is as beautiful as the waterfall! I would do the hike in Am before it’s too hot and take water and snacks.Gorgeous!!!

Decent hike but a beautiful view!

By Stephen M |

My only negative about this hike is that I just despise trekking across loose sand, and there is a LOT of it on this little hike! We were there in april, and on a cool day, but in the summer with heat this could be an uncomfortable hike if not prepared for it. The waterfall at the end, though, makes it all worthwhile! It is gorgeous!

Get out and see some nature

By jenLeCreate |

Entrance located off highway 12. Saw some people parking prior to entering (on shoulders) but we went in and paid the day use fee ($5). Lots of parking inside and on that day there was quite a few cars. Bring a hat, lots of water (not much shade) and good shoes to hike in. The trail follows the water into the canyon - some incredible views. You walk along it sometimes closer than other times. The hike is not very strenuous but does take a while.

Like others have said, hike is about 6 miles. We did not go all the way to the falls as we kept seeing people go by us (you know it is not the destination but the journey) and we thought it would be one of the places that everyone congregates at the end.

We are interested in petroglyphs and pictographs so this was a very worthwhile hike for us. Couldn't find any at first but when the light changed and the shadows came we were able to see the pictographs on the wall across from us. There is a nice looking campground here - we walked around and picked out some sites that we might try if we come back to camp sometime. This would be cool to be able to hike early in the morning or later in the evening before there are many people here.

All in all was a good hike and we were glad we did it although it was a little crowded for our tastes.

Gorgeous, easy hike

By swinka12 |

The trail is marked as 2.7 mi to the falls but it's more like 3.5 miles. Lots to see on the way, easy walk, gorgeous views. I would definitely go there again. Husband went fly fishing while I was hiking and only caught one trout (very tasty!) so I wouldn't call it a good fishing spot.

Calf creek falls

The drive to Calf Creek Trail head is amazing. The trail head is located right on highway 12. Make sure to get a free map of the trail. There are great things to look at on your way to the waterfall. Look out for the petroglyphs on the canyon walls on your way upriver. When you get to the falls, you will find refreshing waters and a breathtaking waterfall. Great hike that everyone in the area must take.

You're Almost There!

By Helen S |

Famous last words indeed. We were mis-informed that this trek would be approximately 3.5 miles round trip. It ended up being more like 7 miles round trip. Well worth it though. I was a hot June day and there are lots of windy, sandy paths. If you have open toed Teva-like shoes, wear them. We had our river shoes but, sand kept on getting inside and wedging our toes. OUCH! If you have little kids, be prepared to have some sort of a pack or carrier for the little ones. It's a challenge for them. My daughter turned 9 and this was her belated birthday trip. She's used to doing challenging hikes, but even for her, this was a long one. You will have to push through a lot of brush, overgrown vegetation mimicking kelp beds that you have to swim through. Hiking sticks are very useful on this type of hike. The deep soft sand can get tiresome for the little ones, even the grown-ups, so you're definitely getting your legs a workout. As we made our way to the waterfall, people seemed to feel the need to tell us, "You're almost there." And, "about 20 more minutes." The 20 minutes were always way off and the "you're almost there" was motivation to keep us going because we had no gauge on how much further it really was. No signs or anything. My daughter got to pay it forward with the "you're almost there" exchange on our way back. Although, she was a bit more accurate on the fact that they were truly, "almost there." Regardless of the challenges on the hike, reaching the waterfalls and swimming hole was nothing short of INCREDIBLE! It was breathtaking, refreshing and such a reward to be able to jump in. Be warned, even with all the sweating and the heat, that water was BRISK! It cooled you down SUPER fast but, it was so nice to be able to enjoy the swim, the sound of the rushing waterfall, the sprinkles from hit splashing against the water and the rocks, and the scenery alone. A MUST-SEE!

Wonderful hike to a beautiful spot

This is one of the most enjoyable and prettiest hikes we have taken in quite a while. This is a must do if you are in the Escalante or Logan Utah area.

Spectacular hike to Calf Creek Lower Falls

By ukulelemama |

If you can hike six miles, this hike is for you. Lovely meander along a river up a red rock canyon. Petroglyphs along the way, and a beautiful waterfall at the end. Carry lots of H20 for hot days.

Beautiful Hiking and scenery!

By Kendra N |

(Lower calf creek falls) This hike took my family and I (all adults over 28 in good physical health) about three hours on the dot and was beautiful. The waterfall at the end of the hike makes the trip worth it! The only reason I did not rate it as excellent is because there were so many sandy areas on the trail. The sand made it a lot harder to hike on and sometimes felt like we were walking on a beach. Sand aside, the hike was very worth it and I am very glad we did it!

Excellent hike!

By PatrickS2K |

Excellent hike! It must have rained just a tad when my family visited as the sand wasn't beach-like so it was a bit easier to traverse. Variety of terrain to hike across but the waterfall at the end makes it so worth it:)

Parking lot can get full quick, luckily we arrived just as the crowds started rolling in so we managed to snag a space. The fee envelopes are at the trailhead on the message board. If you have a National Parks Pass you are not required to pay - you display the fee envelope stub and / or National Parks Pass on your dash.

There are restrooms located at the entrance of the parking lot and there are trail maps up on the wall on the exterior of that building. Pick one up for additional info on the area and so that you may know what the numbered markers on the trail represent.

Check the weather for the area. We received an unexpected, brief rain-shower. Some areas will be slicker to traverse and it may not be obvious which direction will keep you on the main trail without footprints to follow in some spots.

Bring binoculars if you would like to see the petroglyphs. Hiking down was much easier than the hike up. Bring water and remember to pack out all trash.

Wish there was a '6' rating for this waterfall

By Sarah S |

Our group including three boys aged 9-11 walked this (5.5 mile, up and back) trail and it was a total highlight of our week-long trip. The hike was fairly long but quite easy. Be sure to grab a flyer at the beginning so you can read the narration corresponding to the numbered sign posts along the way. There are even some fantastic petroglyphs on the way. Everything pales, however, in comparison to the waterfall at the pinnacle of the trail. I think it was the most beautiful I have ever seen. You just get to be right next to it and the colors are amazing.

Beautiful hike

By Cherie M |

This was a great hike with a beautiful reward at the end. I was expecting the hike to be more difficult because I read previous posts about deep sand like walking on the beach. There are areas where the sand is deep, but they are brief. Most of the trail is packed sand with beautiful views of the canyon. I would recommend starting early because it does get warm by noon.
Make sure you get the map with points of interest located at the trailhead. We were able to find a Native American pictograph and granaries while hiking. It also is informative on how this area formed geologically.
This hike is a must see!

Best hike in GSENM (that we did)

By 213Beaker |

I NEVER expected a falls like this. We were expecting Lower Calf Creek trickle but this was more Hawaii-esqe that Utah-esque. It's a fairly level (albeit sandy) 3.1 mile hike to the falls. Do this hike - well worth the minimal effort

U have to go

By OntarioCanuck1 |

Very popular hike to beautiful 120 foot waterfall, some up and down but pretty level, sand and rock, great views as u hike, wonderful falls but water if VERY COLD.

A sandy hike to a beautiful waterfall

By Heather W |

It's an easy flat hike with enough sand to say you've been at the beach ;) The waterfall is worth the hike.

Great hike with beautiful waterfall

By Sarah G |

We’re SO glad we went on this hike! Juxtaposition of dry canyon with deciduous trees was beautiful. And the falls were lovely. My only recommendation is to be sure to pick up the map at the beginning of the hike so you don’t miss the pictographs and other unique sites.

Beautiful hike

Lower Calf Creek Falls is an easy hike, but it is 6 miles round trip.
We loved seeing the pictographs along the cliff wall across the creek from the trail and lots of fish in the creek too.
