Good road stop

By lubesdad |

Thor’s well was very cool but it is very hard to get a good picture with people all around it . We didn’t have great water spouts because of the tides.

Beautiful area

By Jasmine38Chichester UK |

Stop in at the visitor centre to pick up a map of hikes and what you can see in the area.

We hiked the moderately steep St Perpetua trail ( 3 mile return) to the overlook for fabulous coastal views - you can see along the coast for 35 miles on a clear day. There is also a short 0.2 mile circular trail at the top where elks and eagles are often spotted, although we didn't see any.

We also hiked the 0.8 mile round trip to Cooks Chasm where you can see the Spouting Horn and drove around a mile to the parking area to walk down to the Devils Churn. Both are interesting but only really worthwhile around high tide.

Love this place.. family resides in Yachats so get a number of times to visit and it always excites..

The magic of the ocean always captures one's imagination. Each visit is unlike the one the time before. Such a treasure we have here in Oregon...!

A must see every time we come down the coast

By Captains_Rum_Punch |

We have been here on several occasions but had never ventured down to the beach. We took the trail down to the cove and found this amazing beautiful beach. The whole are is great for walking and photography.

See for Sure

By Kim1084 |

This was the most amazing area we saw on the lovely Oregon coast. Stop at the first visitor center for map and information. You don’t want to miss this.

Absolutely gorgeous

By dthomaspdx |

I thought I’d seen some of the best views that the Oregon coast has to offer, but Cape Perpetua blew my mind. Tons of hiking trails in the area and gorgeous breathtaking vistas. There is something for everyone here, from the mobility challenged to the expert hiker. Bring your camera!!!

Great Viewing In The Rain

By Bruce V |

Spectacular vistas and the power of the ocean are the draws here. We did this on a REALLY bad weather day in February during a big winter storm, so if you are looking for something to do when the weather is really crappy, this is it. All three sites we visited are within a fifteen minute drive south of Yachats on Hwy 101. We were intending to walk down to Devil's Churn and Cook's Chasm/Thor's Well but the driving rain and hail was too nasty. Fortunately there are marked viewpoints right on the highway that provide good views of both. It also worth driving up to the top of the day use area at the park visitors centre where you get a fabulous view of the whole coast. A great way to kill a couple of hours. The blow holes and Devil's Churn are most active at high tide.

Must See!!

By Dawn B |

Beautiful hikes. Get a tide table. Thor's Well and Spouting Horn are amazing to see at high tide. We also saw lots of sea lions!

Breath taking views!!

By WulfLuvr |

There are a few trails leading up to the spectacular views and the fun Stone Building. The trails are easy with a nice woodsy walk. Definitely made for photo ops!!

The ocean was angry that day, my friend

By Lycosmom |

This is a great place for a hike. The volunteers at the Visitors Center are happy to provide hiking maps of anywhere from 0.5 miles to upwards of 6. Don’t miss the tide pools and The Spout.

We Keep Coming Back and This Fall Trip Was Wonderful

By NTSU1975 |

The fall season was much more relaxed along the road and at the stops than on our previous summer trips. We have never found a spot along 101 we did not like, but this is definitely one of our favorites. There is a great visitor center in one area, and places to enjoy wooded hikes and picnics. We have travelled across the country to see those pounding fall waves, so most of our time was spent in the beach and coastal area. There are many of the famous Oregon coast sites in the Cape Perpetua park, so check tide tables if you want to see all of them at the right time. We are seasoned travelers, so some hikes out to sights are a little more difficult than others. Those you may choose to view from afar.

Oregon Coast Treasure

By TracyS3 |

A stop a Cape Perpetua is a must see on the Oregon coast. The trails are well marked and well maintained. The tide pools are beautiful, populated with anemones, urchins star fish and more. The rock formations including the Devil's Churn and the Spouting Horn are natural wonders and transfixing to watch. Give yourself one to two hours to enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

Breathtaking

By Sandra G |

A gorgeous place to hike and enjoy the natural beauty of forest and sea. The visitors center is a must. There are informative displays of the local flora and fauna and shells and minerals and a history of the Native Americans who made their home here. You can get a free map of the various hiking trails here also. There’s a bookstore with numerous Oregon and Pacific Northwest publications. There are wonderful walking trails to various sights like Thor’s Well or Devil’s Churn. Many are paved, but can be steep in places. It’s worth the short drive from the visitors center to the day use overlook at the top of the Cape. The view is spectacular and there is a rock shelter that was built by the CCC back during the Great Depression. It costs $5 to visit Cape Perpetua or display one of the State or National park passes you might have. They have a photo of the ones they accept.

This place is marvelous.

By Fe T |

A good place for agate hunting and mussel clamming on a low tide. Very scenic and one of the many beautiful spots in oregon coasts.

Wildlife oresentation

By JoAnn C |

Great hiking Trails and their presentations are awesome. Check their fb page for the schedule of upcoming events.

One of the best areas to explore the coastal forests and get superb views of the ocean.

By Diane M |

There are several nice hiking trails, a great visitor center (you can see whales from here when they are migrating), and some of the best views on the entire coast. Trails range from challenging to easy.

Photographer.

By David N |

Great shoot. Fun place to explore. Many great spots. Superbe scenic areas upper hills and at the waters edge. Lots of great trails.

My Favorite Area Along the Oregon Coast

By John T |

This was my favorite stop along our Oregon coast drive. I'd come back here and spend a lot more time. The area has so much to offer: rugged coast line, crashing waves, great tide pools, mountain vistas, nice hiking trails, deserted beaches/coves.

Cape Perpetua

By April K |

Must do - beautiful scenic view. Thor’s well and Devil’s Churn a must see. Bring a light jacket. Lots of trails to go hiking. Love it!

Fabulous Hiking with incredible views

By Mary S |

The Cape Perpetua Visitor Center is well worth stopping to take a look at the displays, experience the incredible view, and to talk with the friendly park rangers and volunteers. Pick up a map and take the numerous trails, including the Sitka Spruce trail which boasts a 500 + year old giant tree. The St. Perpetua trail will get your heart pumping as you climb about 750 feet to remarkable views of the coast-line.
The 6 mile Gwynn Creek Loop trail starts at the east end of the Visitor Center with a steady climb of 1200 feet, through old growth Douglas Fir and then Spruce. A gentle down-hill trail follows the flow of Gwynn creek, then loops back to the Visitor Center.
A must place to visit !

Beautiful trails

By Jeannette E |

Trails for everyone...lovely, clean and peaceful. Lots of places to cMp, many restrooms and you are right next to the Pacific.

Outstanding Scenery and Hiking

By lyleh1959 |

We visited the Devil’s Churn, Cooks Trail, the tide pools, Horn Spout, Cape Cove and the rock outlook. Actually just stumbled upon the area as we were driving the coast highway. Highly recommend as a place to stretch your legs and spend some time exploring!

Best natural setting on Oregon coast

By OKTravel |

Don’t miss this well preserved, gorgeous, natural beauty! Hike above and below visitors centers. Every elevation offers another jaw dropping view.

Spectacular Scenery

By rockhound13 |

The stretch of Highway from Yachats to Florence is ine of the most spectacular in the country. The Devils Churn, Strawberry Hill, Neptune Beach and Bob's Creek are all must sees.

Stay hydrated!

By Kathy H |

It is so beautiful and the constant winds keep it so cool, that you might not realized you're not drinking enough water! We loved walking the trails with our dog, and taking photos of the great views around every bend. It's a perfect spot to get away and have some peace & quiet. I recommend good walking shoes or hiking boots because there are a lot of up and downhill segments to the trails.

WOW- THIS COAST LEAVES ONE BREATHLESS

By srimanone |

A most expansive breathtaking vistas. Plenty of places to atop for day use and walking. Be aware of changing weather and dress accordingly. Have fun on the beach.

Coastal Family Trip

By Foxfire5 |

Wow, more coastal Pacific beauty at its finest. Stopped at Strawberry hill beach and was awestruck by the beauty and power of the Pacific. Found our way to the rocky beach and found ourselves combing for driftwood and rocks aplenty. Was windy and rainy when we we there, but still awesome. We wanted to spend all day there, but had to press on.

Tide pooling spot

By signupscott |

We went tidal pooling here in the morning and saw lots of interesting stuff. Very pretty place in the foggy mornings.

Spent the Afternoon Watching Whales

By Sharon |

I didn't expect to spend the afternoon watching whales but I did. Cape Perpetual was a very fun adventure. The Visitors' Center is beautiful, informative, and well staffed offering programs, movies, hikes. We hiked on the coastal trails, beaches, and tide pools - the whole time watching whales pretty close to the shore. We saw starfish, crabs, mussels. I would recommend this area - it was well maintained, had a variety of trials and things to do.

Highlight of our trip!

By Della B |

We absolutely loved the accessibility of this attraction! You could hike down on very nice pathways, but if you’re not too spry or keen on coming back uphill, then you still get to enjoy everything from the lookout! Be sure to go at high tide, though! Low tide is definitely not the same at all! The spouting horn is like rolling thunder and really great to see! Thor’s Well is spectacular! From the highway, you wouldn’t realize they’re there! Just pull in to the Cape Perpetua Viewpoint (around mile marker 169) and you’re there!

Favorite place on Oregon Coast

By Sarah P |

Stunningly gorgeous. Came at high tide because of Thor's Well, that was super anti-climactic. However, Cook's Chasm, Spouting Horn, Devil's Churn and the hiking and exploring rocks in between all that was AMAZING! The US Forest Visitor Center was fun and inviting. You will not be disappointed!

Beautiful

By Linda W |

Cape Perpetua is absolutely stunning and the hikes from the parking lot are worth the trip. During whale watching season it’s a great viewing area although the Grey Whales hang around most of the year and can be seen at any time. Stop and look if you are I. The area

One of the most amazing views along the Oregon coast

By Sue H |

All of the Oregon coast that we visited was spectacular and Cape Perpetua was a highlight with Cook's Chasm, the blow hole and the visitor's center. Well worth the stop for an hour or so.

Trails, view point, and educational area.

By Kieande |

This is a fun place to stop for the views. The trails are located all around and to varying degrees of difficulty. This is a must stop.

Great access to old lava flows

By porter_osborne |

Loved being able to walk on surf worn lava flows. At some places the mist from waves makes rainbows within sloughs/channels in the rock. Thought we would stop at overlook and be on about our way. Ended up spending an hour or so walking about on the rocks.

Awesome bit of coastal wildland

By Anthony |

It's not a virgin old-growth forest, but it is still a gorgeous and accessible place to wander for a day, with paved and dirt trails to the crashing surf. Wildlife, too!

Gorgeous

By blondi1517 |

Take the drive to the top and you will be rewarded with fantastic views of the Oregon coastline. You can see for miles.

My favorite location along the Oregon Coast

By Utahwoman52 |

Wonderful area with so much to see. Best time to visit the Devils Churn and the Spouts is close to high tide where the spouts really do their thing.

A Scenic Area Where the Forest Meets the Sea

By DoloresJacoby.Let’sTravel.98368 |

This is a beautiful part of the Siuslaw National Forest. The coastline is magnificent with many beautiful stops. It’s also wonderful to drive through the forest area to the east. There are so many beautiful trails (26 miles) to take advantage of. Be sure to stop at both the day use area and the visitor’s center open seven days a week for your National Passports stamp. Forest rangers are extremely informative and helpful. It’s a Marine Garden shoreline and the headline is the highest viewpoint accessible by car on the entire Oregon Coast. Captain James Cook first observed the headland in 1778! Enjoy the views and stops.

Fascinating!

By Heather Gebbia |

Thor's Well is amazing and so fun to watch if you go at high tide. The waves crashing into the rocks were so fun to watch and sometimes the spray was so powerful we would get wet. We walked the trail from the area where Thor's Well is over to the Devil's Churn but by the time we got there the tide had gone out a lot so it wasn't as interesting. I think that would be better to see at high tide also. We did see some whales off the coast during that walk though which was really cool! Parking is limited at both places, but some people just come and look quickly and leave so it seemed like parking spots opened up frequently.

What's Not To Like!

By Nole Man |

Some of the most beautiful scenery along the Oregon coastline. Despite the rainy weather (Hey, it's Oregon!), we enjoyed a great day hiking and visiting some of the main sites in the area such as Thor's Well and Devils' Churn. There's a nice interpretive center and friendly staff to help guide you around the area. A must stop in my book!

A beautiful coastline. We went down to the beach at low tide, and enjoyed ourselves.

By Bill Curran |

There is not much to do at the inland side of the Park, but the beach is awesome. We were there at low tide, and say so much sea-life in the tide pools. There were quite a number of people at each pull out, and it only a short walk to the shore.

A great place to see the Pacific Ocean coastline

By WilliamOAlsip |

Walk beneath the awesome arms of giant Sitka spruce to Devils Churn. Ocean waves careen up the chasm and crash in the volcanic rock thousands of times a day. For a peaceful contrast, continue on to Cape Cove Trail, Captain Cook Trail, Oregon Coast Trail, St Perpetua Trail and Whispering Spruce Trail which is an easy 0.3 mile loop around Cape Perpetua Overlook.
The views are spectacular.

Stunning views and quite hike.

By PatW217 |

Spent half a day hiking to the 550 year old spruce and then to the beach and tide pools. Market trails and not crowded.

Beautiful!

By Victoria R |

We enjoyed a lovely walk here and took some gorgeous photos. This was a place I had been wanting to visit, and now I regret putting it off for so long. Make sure YOU don't wait!

Stunning area

By Barbara S |

We had chamber of commerce weather the 2 days we stayed on the coast & this area was breathtaking! Highly recommend.

Moving here!

By Sara S |

I could stay here forever. This is such a beautiful place. I just can’t even begin to describe how much I loved it here. Pictures do no justice.

Gorgeous

By PAHWestfield |

Gorgeous scenery and lovely trails. Hike the ones that take you up high for some awesome views. Plenty of options for beach exploration too.

Beautiful hike!!!

By Lisa R |

This rates right up there as one of our favorite hikes. Weather was perfect. Could see forever! Steady climb but so worth the view! We saw a couple of whales from several view points.

Variety

By beentheredonethatia |

Visitor center nice. Numerous trails and sites. Nice bathroom. Also, on road by blowing water, great coffee shop. Worth a stop. Be careful.

Dramatic beauty

By Torrie N |

This is a place of wild natural beauty rather than the typical beach crowded with sunbathers. Misty, foggy, craggy, with dramatic terrain and wild surf crashing against the rocky and log strewn sand. Sea spouts, churns, tidal pools, sea creatures, all to explore.
Hike or you can drive up the scenic overlook above the beach among the old growth giant Sitka spruce and huge old Douglas-fir where you can look down on the coastline and really appreciate the spectacular views. We didn't see them but people have seen migrating gray whales. Would recommend sturdy comfortable shoes, cloths you don't mind getting a bit wet, and binoculars if you have them.

Not for those with walking challenges

By indeptravelforus |

We were able to park near overlook to Devils punchbowl . It was at an uneventful time. No drama. Trail is switchbacks down cliff and back up again. We didn’t see spouting horn either. Same walking conditions. Nevertheless We do recommend the visitors center. Quite informative

fabulous views and hiking

By John D |

visited several of the numerous named points of intetest at Cape Perpetua; Devils Churn, Cooks Trail, The Spouting Horn, Tidal Pools. All were just breathtaking. Of special note is the short Whispering Spruce Trail at the top of a high overlook. The view of the Cape Perpetua coastline from the historic rock shelter was unbelievable and the best of the area, in my opinion.

The views from the ridge and the tide pools are magnificent

By Schlepperman |

Wear good shoes when exploring the tide pools. Cooks Chasm is free and better than Devil's Churn (which is nice too). Starfish, clams, crabs, dramatic wave breaks and more.

As always, Beautiful!

By Flare-n-me |

As regular visitors to the nearby coast, we took friends to Cape Perpetual. Even though the day was rainy and foggy, it did not diminish the natural beauty of this area.

This is a stop that does not take too long to visit but is well worth it!

Photo Ops Galore

By ReadLit247 |

Gorgeous views of the Oregon Coast -- Worth the drive up the hill to get the stunning views. Sunset was spectacular!

Amazing

By Campingforlife2019 |

Amazing is the only word I can use to describe this lovely area. Enjoyed our time here. The trails are so much fun and the views are beautiful. Recommend.

Neat Place for a Quick Stop!

By Hannah Davis |

We visited this area (specifically Devil's Churn and Thor's Well) at high tide in mid-August. According to some locals that were also there, it was a particularly calm high tide. Even with this, we saw the "breathing" of Thor's Well and the crashing of waves at Devil's Churn. We took the Restless Waters Trail and saw a unique landscape and some tide pool critters. We also hung around the Spouting Horn area and saw lots of large waves crashing, but did not witness the actual "horn spouting". As many have already mentioned, I would be sure to check the tide tables and try to line up your visit with high tide. We didn't spend a lot of time here, but it was definitely worth the stop.

Lovely Spot

By highpines |

Great Visitor Center with wide picture window view with chairs and binoculars. They also have a short video. There's a $5 fee per vehicle or put national park pass on dash. Nice hike to Giant Cedar tree. Don't take the option to go thru the campground, I think that's just for people staying there and their hike is shortened by about a mile roundtrip. Great view from the highest elevation spot and nice walk out to CCC stone shelter building.

Loved the views!

By becky h |

Super nice visit, friendly visitor center folks and clean bathrooms. The views are excellent. Thor's Well was the highlight of our trip

Hiking Mecca

By danielburd |

Explore to your heart's content in this area as there is a lot to see and hiking trails that range from challenging to a stroll so fun for all ages and levels of experience. Check out Oregon's largest Sitka spruce tree in Cape Meares National Wildlife Refuge... it is at the end of an easy hike and it is well worth the walk... it is a whopper!

Amazement

By kategianny |

This area remains one of the most beautiful areas of the coast. Seeing starfish is a really exciting thing. You just have to check the times of low and high tides.

we stop here every year on our way north and south

By elderlyones |

great forest service campground and interpretive center
really fun tide pools and hikes
we love the area

Gorgeous hikes

By Jeff P |

Walks up or down, or along the coastline. Rock scrambles and easy strolls. Anemones, sea lions, and the ever present weather. The full gamut. Enjoy!

Unbelievable Beauty

By Richard R |

Just south of Yachats is Cape Perpetua, maybe 6 miles. This is some of the easiest accessibility to rugged coastline you can find. There is a very nice visitors center with an easy walk down to the seashore. The main attraction for me is Thor's Well. Be careful with the tide because if you are unlucky, or stupid, you can be swept away and die. If the conditions are right you can get world class photos.

One of the best views on the coast

By Warren G W |

This entire area, with Thor's Well, the Spouting Horn, Devils Churn, the beach and the forest are worth a visit, whether there are storms, fog, rain, or (sometimes) sunshine.

Gorgeous area of the Oregon Coast.

By adventuresof_jade_ |

We didn't have time for Thors well and were there at the wrong time for the Tide being right for it. So Instead we hiked to the Devils churn.
the Devils churn was pretty awesome. Big waves were crashing all over the rocks, I stayed up a little higher, but some people were down on the lower rocks, seemed a little dangerous.
it's fun to watch all the ocean waves churning and splashing everywhere.
This is a Beautiful park that we will be back to.

High winds and a great view

By Mike L |

Do not miss driving to the top of Cape Perpetua the view is breath taking. Be careful in high winds, had to hang on to some benches to stay steady.

Thor's Well and Spouting Horn - a must see at high tide

By KendianaJones |

Thor's Well

My research indicated that Thor’s Well is best near high tides. We timed it to arrive about 75 minutes before a 7-to-8 feet high tide. This was perfect. From the roadside pullout immediately south of the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center, it was a short walk down to a small viewing area with an interpretive sign for the Spouting Horn. But where is Thor’s Well? There are no signs for it, but it was obvious when we were there. From the viewing area straight out to the ocean, there was a group of about 8 people standing on the rocky shore close to where the waves were splashing. We walked down there and I took pictures for half an hour before thundering booming sounds to the north drew us over to another wave-on-rock attraction. Afterwards, we walked over to the Spouting Horn. All in all, we were there for over an hour.

Spouting Horn

The Spouting Horn is somewhat difficult to pinpoint, unless it is close to high tide. From the roadside pullout immediately south of the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center, it was a short walk down to a small viewing area with an interpretive sign for the Spouting Horn. But we still couldn’t tell from the picture on the sign, where to look. The answer, it turns out, is straight south, over the stone wall of the viewing area. Once we found it, we watched for 20 minutes and got some photos. Afterward, we drove north to a roadside pullout past Devil’s Churn (because that parking lot was full). From that pullout, we could see the Spouting Horn blasting much higher than we were there. So clearly the best time to see the Spouting Horn is at full high tide.

Didn't live up to the hype, very underwhelming

By Joseph Robba |

Honestly, I had really really high expectations for this spot along the coast, and frankly it just didn't live up to the expectations we had. There are so many beautiful places to see along the coast, that if you're pressed for time, I might just skip this one. Thor's Well was cool, but outside of that, we really didn't have much luck with finding any cool tide pools, which was one of the draws to coming here. We had much better luck with that at Bandon and Hug Point. We even walked up to the visitor center, and they apparently were closed due to a power outage. In general, I would probably skip this part of the trip and not feel to bad about it in the future.

THE thing to do while in town

By ceceliainDC |

And worth the stop if driving thru. There are multiple scenic trails and great points of interest including a blow hole, the Devils churn, etc. You'll want to have sturdy shoes and a sense of adventure to explore around for a while. Just be prepared to get wet.

Great time!!!

By Sherry F |

Don’t miss this!! There is quite a bit of walking but if I can handle it so can you. It was amazing. There is a lot to do. There are several places to stop to see the tide pools, Thor’s well, devils churn and spouting horn!! Beautiful!!

Staff not very helpful

By lorbay55 |

I was there looking to use the Agents of Discovery app but staff knew nothing about it. I wandered around the visitor centre and found the information myself then took it to the man.....Oh yeah he said....so and so looks after that......Is she in? No!

Beautiful views and a great place to experience the power of the ocean.

By Rzen |

The folks at the visitor center were helpful and friendly and the views are great. We were there on a rainy day in April and got to experience the fierceness of the ocean close up. Be sure to walk the trails along the cost, they're easy and paved. If you can - catch Spouting Horn at high tide and you will be amazed by the power of the waves rolling in and crashing on the rocks. Don't be a dummy or try to impress your girlfriend or whatever by climbing all over those rocks cause one wrong move or big wave and you're fish food. Thor's Well is pretty neat to see in action but I have to say if you walk a little further to the next viewpoint there is a part of the shore with 3 sides of rocks where the waves come rolling through and every now and then they made the biggest, most impressive splash. It made my jaw drop, the water must've sprayed 60 feet up in the air. Maybe this was because we were there during high tide, but I couldn't believe this spot wasn't famous or have a name so I'm going to call it Persephone's Pool! Enjoy!

Great Viewing For King Tides

By Mike P |

Get there at least 1 hour early before the King Tides so you can get a parking spot. Great viewing of the various wave responses.

Worth the stop!

By XUXUXUXU |

This was a beautiful stop for a gorgeous view of the coast. Be sure to take the trail down to the stone building. We spotted a grey whale from that viewing point. Truly a magnificent view.

Devil's Churn, Thor's Well, Spouting Horn all worth some small hikes to see them.

By Lanamamaomaha |

Cape Perpetua Scenic Area has some of the best landforms related to the ocean coming ashore. Thor's Well and Spouting Horn are right next to one another. Devil's Churn is close by just north of the two. There are hiking paths in Cape Perpetua to lead you to them. If you miss one parking area, there is likely another parking area close by that has a path to what you think you have missed. Granted the action of these formations is a lot heavier when it is high tide and/or when the surf is really rough off of the ocean. It can be a little more dangerous to be close to Thor's Well at those high surf times. It is some good exercise and great beauty. Cape Perpetua is definitely worth the stop for both natural wonders and exercise.

Some of the best views on OR coast!

By bshiv44 |

Beautiful area on the coast to visit. We drove up to the scenic area to watch the sunset and it was amazing. We did a short hike to the big spruce tree as well. Short and easy hike through the forest. We stopped at a viewpoint off of the 101 to see the lighthouse and it was beautiful. Lots of sea lions too!

Wild And Fearsome!

By marriott946 |

Visited on a day of thick ocean fog so unfortunately the view was restricted but what could be seen was ferocious water.

The Pacific Ocean like all oceans is a law unto itself.

This is not a place to be in the water!

Amazing view

By Sheldon King |

Amazing views from the lookout on the whispering spruce trail. You walk right along the cliff edge almost the whole trail. On a clear day you could see a long way. Didn't see any whales unfortunately.

Beautiful

By richlee1975 |

Great drive with dramatic views of the ocean beaches. Great walkx can get sand in your shoes or easier walks on concrete paths. Markers are informative telling you about local history or what your viewing.

Beautiful view!

By Nicole C |

We enjoyed the hike up to the top, the view is spectacular! We were fortunate to enjoy beautiful weather the weekend we visited.

Hike the Amanda Trail.

By eliz375 |

You can start the trail at the Cape Perpetua overlook or in Yachats. I started in Yachats, hiked past the bears, and stopped at Amanda's grotto to pay my respects before turning back. The trail had a few maintenance issues--a little overgrown in places and a fallen tree in the grotto--but the 5.5 miles were doable even for an out of shape arthritic woman, and the history of the area and the statue are sobering. Highly recommend.

Great hike up to the top for amazing views

By S B |

There are a few hikes here. Some are easy and go down to the beach/shoreline. We took the more difficult hike up to the top of Cape Perpetua. It's a gain of around 800 feet in elevation over a little over a mile. One at the top the views are well worth the hike.

Atmospheric

By sm1710 |

We visited this area during a period of less than favourable weather. It was still very atmospheric.

The force of the ocean is spectacular, creating some beautiful sites and sounds.

There are parking areas along the route, offering short term, free parking. For those who want to walk down to the shoreline, you would need to buy a day pass.

We were there in the evening, so we avoided any parking/fee issues.

stunning views and guides are available

By Singing Breeze C |

One can experience Cape Perpetua from a safe distance above where there is a wheel chair accessible indoor lookout and easy trails...or one can pull over by HWY 101 and go down to the beach there...but watch out for sneaker waves, they are no joke...also the ledges by the sea are every bit as unstable as the signs say...people have died there from ignoring the warnings

great place to hike!

By marley |

we loved hiking here! the nature is absolutely beautiful and the climate is perfect for hiking - not to hot! the upper area is beautiful too when it is clear. the main visitors center is a great place to start hiking and it's possible to go for miles!

The most beautiful views around!!!!

By Lynn Y |

Thor's well is right there. Then go to the visitor center and get directions to the top!! The most stunning views. And you must do the short walk if you are able. This walk takes you to the Conservation Corps Shelter.

Should be included in your trip

By RunHikeClimb |

The drive to the Cape Perpetua scenic viewpoint is just a few miles off highway 101. The view is good enough to stare at for 15-20 minutes, and the walk around the short trail at the viewpoint is relaxing and a great way to experience the mystic woods of the area

Put this on your bucket list!

By bigthicket |

This was my very favorite stop on Hwy 101 on the Oregon coast. We made a point of checking high tide time before arriving. We hit it just perfect! I could have just stood, watched, and taken video and pictures for hours of Cooks Chasm, Thor's Well, and Spouting Horn. All three are right there together. I would have missed Thor's Well but my husband spotted it first and pointed it out to me and others. After you spot it it's quite obvious. This is a must stop and I highly recommend stopping at high tide!

Hiking Time

By Khristinatew |

Hiking on Amanda's Trail while at Cape Perpetua. The whole Cape is beautiful, the shoreline and east of highway 101 on the hiking trails.

Do the whole trail to see all the attractions

By shewholovestoeat |

There is a visitor center, the Devils Churn (and the snack shack). Thor's well, the Blowhole. Great hike. You do have to pay to park. Was so worth stopping and hiking to all the areas. Beautiful

Breathtaking Views

By Nancy B |

This whole area should be on everyone’s Hwy 101 itinerary. So many gorgeous views. Be sure to stop at the visitors center. Very helpful!

The Oregon Coast has so much and you could spend days here looking at things. This is one of the best areas for viewing and photographs. Loved every minute of it.

Easy hike, big tree

By Kevinandanna |

Enjoyed our time here even though it was raining. 2 mike round trip hike to the big tree but it’s easy. Tree is impressive! We didn’t do much else due to time and weather. Staff at visitor’s center was incredibly pleasant.

Loved it!

By TallahasseeWriter |

Not only did we enjoy the various natural phenomenons along the ocean like Thor's Well and Cook's Chasm, but the hike up the Big Spruce Trail was fun. The big trees in Oregon are wonderful!

Five stars for this entire section of coast.

By ragsdad aka Dusty Katz |

Our first trip to the Oregon coast couldn't have been better. It has to be one of the most beautiful areas possible. We stayed at the Fireside Motel in Yachats and explored this entire area and it was all spectacular. Give yourself plenty of time as there is so much to see and many trails to hike.

Beautiful but not if you are afraid of heights

By FLOGROWNGIRL |

This is a very beautiful overlook and path, however if you are afraid of heights I would not recommend it. You travel quite a distance up on the road. There is a hiking path overlooking the ocean and all of the nature in the area.

Wild Coast with mitigating help from a great Visitors' Center

By AnonymousPSRE |

Our family of four was driving North up the Oregon Coast from Florence that day, this offered a great sequence so we could stretch our legs. After parking the car and stopping at visitor's center to learn great park factoids, we walked a short distance on a steep slope (paved trail) down and under the highway to eventually get to the water's edge. We were there at low tide, so it was good rock hopping along the shore. We discovered pretty rough terrain at the debris-strewn and ocean pummeled shore- so be prepared. This was a surprising and unplanned discovery where we had a full dose of wind, sun, spray, and the ocean's power. Would have taken more time to see Thor's Well and other features but we had to make time further north that day. It was a very memorable stop!

Beautiful Place and One of Our Favorites

By NTSU1975 |

After travelling across the country, getting a rental car, and making the drive to the coast, this was our first stop. If nothing else had happened, our visit here would have still been worth the trip. DO some planning and get your tide chart so you can make the best of your visit. That goes for all of the stops on the coast. We were lucky to have some extra low tides as well as higher high tides, so that made our stops even more impressive.

Plan a Day to Explore, Hike, Tidepool, Whale Watch

By Twinedith |

Cape Perpetua is a fabulous place to spend a day hiking, exploring the visitor's center, tidepooling, whale watching, and watching the sunset. Great food is available a few miles to the North in Yachats. For the adventurous hikers, there is a two mile hike up the side of the Cape that takes you right to the top. (For the less adventurous, a park road will also get you there. At the top are stunning views, both North and South, of the coastline.

Must stop

By JOHN B |

One of best natural life displays at visitor center and very informative and bright rangers. Go to both centers and hike down to beach at beach side center.

Must see

By Bart&Romney |

This has always been my favorite spot on the Oregon coast. Go up to the lookout and walk the trails. the views are amazing.

Beautiful Oceanfront Park

By Carol |

I would recommend this place for nature lovers and explorers alike. Lots to see and enjoy. We're considering camping nearby this summer.

A most scenic beautiful area!

By Narrows51965 |

Never tire of Cape Perpetua!! It is beautiful and the hiking is great! Always look forward to a visit!!

Stunningly unique!

By Rosemary M |

This is a national forest so park passes work. The trail from the visitor center out to Thors Well, Spouting Horn and Devil's Chasm is about 2 miles round trip. We lucked out and hit it at high tide which shows off these special spots well. We found this all very interesting and so different than other beach experiences.

Gorgeous

By Biglaugh |

Gorgeous place to stop and see the beautiful look out inside. They can also help you plan a hiking trip. It was cold and rainy so we just looked around inside. Lots of informative info and local plants etc.

Wow!

By vespadue |

This is a must see if you are in the Yachats area. The views are incredible especially the Cape Perpetua Overlook!

Easy acess to the beaches..

By salmoncreek15 |

We have visited this area over 30 times over the yrs. and there is always something new to see ..Easy acees especially with children.

Wonderful hike.

By Kenneth H |

We took a six and a half mile hike that was wonderful. So much to explore and see. The trees are amazing, with lots of photo opportunities. Will definitely be back to discover new trails.

LIke the Ents from LOTR

By Dianna58 |

The trails at the top are amazing and the trees seem magical as if they should be on a set for LOTR films. I even saw a whale spouting. A Japanese family said they have been coming for years in the fall as a family tradition and had never seen a whale before. It was our blessed day for sure. And a rainbow was off in the distance. Can't get much better. Definitely worth seeing.

Don’t miss!

By PaLuv2travel |

Beautiful scenery. We took a nice hike to the top and were Rewarded when we reached the top. Definitely recommend!

Beautiful

By k8lynindenverco |

We hiked much of the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area during our visit. The forest and shore are stunning. The sea and animal life are fun and interesting to find and watch and the hikes overall were a great workout. The visitors center has interesting information and helpful staff. Definitely a favorite part of our trip to the Oregon coast.

Foggy day :(

By Leilehua |

I rate this as excellent even though we did not see much of this area due to the fog. I take it by faith that it is a most amazing and beautiful place as pictures show. We did do the Whispering Spruce Trail to the historic stone shelter which was a very pretty and easy hike. It took us above the thick layer of fog to clear blue skies and that was pretty amazing itself, like being in a plane above the clouds. We hope to be back to see it all!

Take your camera everywhere!

By Christina G |

great walks, crashing surf -- very dramatic and mesmerizing; be sure to hike to the top for a spectacular view. You can drive up, but that spoils the whole thing. Many opportunities for dramatic photos. Very nice visitors center -- lots of info

Best place for waves on the Oregon Coast

By Lynn A |

Cape Pepetua has great trails and views. The crashing waves here can be stupendous. The drive to the top lookout is not to be missed, 700 feet above the road. Watch young children carefully here and don't get too close to the edge, though.

Great View Hike

By Carlsport |

Good visitor center with knowledgable Rangers. Great array of hikes right from the visitor center, including going down to the water (Spouting Horn and Thor's Well were impressive) and a great view hike up the mountain to the north (about 3 miles round trip). Make sure you go all the way to the top to the little hut built out on the point - great photo ops!

Beautiful Hike

By David R |

Very nice place to hike and enjoy some beautiful scenery! Take the hike to the large spruce tree along a nice mountain stream. Drive up to the top of the cape perpetua lookout stone house built during the depression by the CCC. Also walk out to the coast and see Devil's churn and Thor.

Hiking, views, tidepools, awesome ocean.

By CanineTraveler2 |

Cape Perpetua has a hiking trail network for those who want some exercise along with ocean views and beaches. Combine walks to the shore attractions - Devil's Churn, Thor's Well, Spouting Horn (best when the tide is coming in) and hike to the top of Cape Perpetua for an awesome ocean view. The hike up Gwynn Creek is lovely - not next to the creek but it crosses many little tributaries. When you walk to Devil's Churn you might continue on the trail to a lovely little beach - lots of rugged lava rock for the waves to crash on! Visitor's Center is also worth a visit. Don't forget to take chairs to a nearby beach to watch the sunset.

Fabulous area!

By Navigator46427613664 |

Cape Perpetua has a lot of scenic beauty to offer. I took a stroll down to the beach, camera in hand, hoping to see Sea Anemonies along the shoreline. Unfortunately the tides are too high at this time of year to see any, but I was lucky enough to catch rays of sunshine coming through the lush forest, and thoroughly enjoyed the many sights of the area.

Hiking

By trufflescout |

We have enjoyed 3 different hikes in this area. They all start at he helpful Visitors Center. There are paper maps available for use. The Cooks Ridge/ Gwynn Creek hike was lovely. 6.5 miles, 1200 ft elevation gain. Old growth forest, wildflowers, the last mile is along the ocean with nice views.

Traveling the coastline.....

By carolinejo207 |

One stop on our "let's go see" drive.....was a fun stop, learned a little about the lighthouse/area. Then we continued our drive; short but nice walk and look at lovely views!

The hike to the top is well worth it!

By OAW |

A little difficult in places, but just go slow and enjoy the outdoors! Well worth the couple of hours it takes to hike this trail. Take pictures and see the Giant Spruce and Rock Well. Get the Oregon Coast Passport and go to Heceta Lighthouse the same day!

Gorgeous Scenery

By GracedGirls |

Driving along the Oregon coast is so pretty. The views are unlike those found along the Gulf. Even though the water isn't crystal blue, the greenery and rock formations make up for it.

Magnificent views

By Leslie F |

Took the walk to the Rock Shelter. What a magnificent view of the coastline. Highly recommended. This whole area is really gorgeous

Beautiful

By Kari O |

There are nice hiking trails here with beautiful views. The trails are easy to walk. If you want you can walk down to the rocky beach and search for marine life in the pools in the rocks. There is also a spout here that sprays up water.

Vacation

By CUL8R |

Beautiful area to hike. For those interested in a more challenging hike (strenuous), take the St. Perpetua trail to the top for a stunning view of Oregon's coastline.

Breathtaking

By Carol R |

If you are in the area you don’t want to miss this site. We drove all the way to the top of the overlook and it was an incredible view. Stop first at the visitor’s center to buy a parking pass and for information on the area and the hiking trails. There is a small gift shop and restrooms at the visitors center.

Fun Quick Hike to the 2nd Largest Oregon Tree, Great Views at Whispering Pines Lookout

By beartrax79 |

We spent a few hours here and really enjoyed ourselves. Note that this is a federal park, so federal passes (including the Every Kid in a Park free pass for 4th graders) are valid here.

We took the quick, relatively easy hike from the Visitor's Center to the Giant Spruce tree and really got a glimpse of the overwhelming forest in Oregon. We'd spent so much of our trip focused on the beach, it was great to see how magnificent the forest can be. Note that we didn't notice too many insects - I don't think you even need bug spray.

After, we drove up to the Whispering Pines trail and headed out to the lookout for some spectacular Oregon coast views. Bring cameras and binoculars and just enjoy.

Note that we weren't able to get any cell service on TMobile or Sprint in the park. However, the Visitor's Center has free wifi if you really need it (we needed it to check into our flight for the next day).

Truly a gem of the Oregon coast

By Nancy E |

Sitka spruce, great, simple hikes perfect for families. Wonderful tidepools at low tide, and devils churn is awesome at high tide

Spectacular views

By Donn S |

There are lots of places to view the Oregon coast but this one is a must do. If you have the energy hike down to the water. If not, the views from above are more than enough.
Make a point to see all three turnoffs

Fantastic

By nownow29 |

The settings are amazing. This area has so much to offer.

I recommend go up to the overlook. Take the road for the Cape Perpetua campground and go up the overlook road. It will offer the breathtaking view of the coast. Do take a short walk to the West Shelter. It is worth it.

Outstanding views

By Tim C |

The trails in and around the cape are all excellent, low difficulty treks. You will be rewarded with beautiful vistas and sights. Witness the beauty and fury of the sea at Devils Churn and Thor's Well, with plenty of crashing surf, and incredible spouting horns. Best viewed at high tide, but use caution and stay well back from the break line - strong sneaker waves can be a major risk!

Amazing...Beautiful!!

By Nicole0216 |

Spent a day up in this area, and although the temps were in the low 30’s, the sun was out and it was just beautiful! Photos do not do it justice. The sprouting hole, Thor’s Well, and the ride pools are amazing! We didn’t stop at Devil’s Churn tho...we completely forgot!

You must take a walk and check things out....the power of the ocean is just amazing...and makes for some gorgeous photos! We took our drone out and got some AMAZING videos...if you want to see any, let me know!

Best Place for Seal Watching on Oregon Coast

By Thomas S |

A ways off of Highway 101, but worth the time and effort. Watch all kinds of seals and sea life in a natural setting. Bring your binoculars. And it is free.

We never miss this

By Mary F |

We stop here every time we drive this section of the Oregon Coast. The view is spectacular on sunny days.

Fascinating Tide Pools

By BethfromA2 |

Very lovely area which you can hike in for several days. We went to the Tide Pools at high tide. Very cool.

See Devil's Churn at high tide for photo opts

By Critiqueness |

Highest viewpoint accessible by vehicle on the Oregon Coast. On a clear day you can see over 30 miles out to sea and 70 miles of coastline. There are 26 miles of trails, accessible at the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area. Helpful ranger usually on site. Coffee and snack shop on site, as well as restrooms. Popular stop for viewing Devil's Churn. Open 7 days a week.

Spectacular

By Ppoupore |

We were happily surprised to roll our RV into this amazingly spectacular area of Oregon. Around each bend is more beauty

Easy, paved oceanside walk to view the action of waves and explore tidepools

By Sharon B |

Short hike, along oceanside paved trails to see wave action at high tide and to explore tide pools at low tide. Visitor center and bathrooms. Somewhat limited parking. Wear rugged shoes for walking on old lava out croppings to explore tide pools.

Wonderful access to spectacular Oregon coast nature

By VBGuy43 |

Big parking lot, easy access to trails, and a very helpful ranger staff make this a must stop for exploring the amazing section of the Oregon coast. There are short and long trails, some easy, some moderately difficult. A quick two-hour almost-stroll leads to a 600 year old Sitka spruce through huge groves of huge Sitka spruce and along a beautiful creek. And an easy walk down to the water leads to tide pools which are full of life at low tide. Campgrounds looked great! Fee area, but any of a number of national park passes are valid.

What a Glorious Place to Hike

By taxdestroyer |

The trails are lovely and the trillium were abundant last weekend when I indulged myself with a wonderful afternoon hike. This place has some of my all time favorite trails. Ancient old growth trees. Dramatic views of the coastline toward te end of the hike.

Lots of Things to Do and See

By travelwriter52 |

There is so much to see and do. If you want to see things that are easy to get to, they have them. You want challenging hikes, no problem. You want to see nature at its finest, everywhere you look it is there. You want history, go visit the west shelter. The only warning is that it is not safe to be on the beach when the waves are crashing but very easy to see from a short distance.

Lovely place - awesome views

By TAMAN1951 |

Very relaxing place wit lots of easy access points.

Views are spectacular.

Well worth the time to deviate from a drive down the classic hwy 101.

Stunning!

By Michelle Z |

Lots of trails and viewpoints. At high tide, Thor's Well, Spouting Horn and Devil's Chasm are amazing. However, unless it's a higher high tide you may struggle to see the well and horn unless you hike down to their level (which is what we did). Great tide pools at low tide. And the visitor's center is nice! Loved it!

Cape Perpetua

By Laurie S |

Probably the highlight of the coast for us. Stayed at the Adobe in Yachats, really great. Thor's Well, Horn spout, hike to Hobbit trail and Hobbit trail to Hobbit beach were great. Hike was totally worth the payoff in views and beauty of the coastal forests. The Cape Perpetua lighthouse was very interesting and enjoyed watching the seal lions on the rocks below.

Beautiful coastline and good information

By sheadogOregon |

We spent the morning at Cape Perpetua going through the tide pools and watching Thors well and the spouting Horn. The visitor center is well done with very good educational exhibits and the beautiful picture window with which to view the ocean and spouting Horn. We also went to the day use area where, I believe, it is the highest point on the Oregon coast above sea level. What an incredible view!

Stunning views from the highest point on the coast

By melissawads22 |

We enjoyed several trails within Cape Perpetua National forest this time, including the 500 year old spruce tree!

Nice views of the coast line

By Mina50952 |

A short hike takes you to this scenic spot. Around high tide you can see water spouting from the cracks in the rocks, Devil’s Churn.

Cape Perpetua Scenic Overlook

By Jerrianne W |

You can see for miles and miles up on the top of this scenic drive! If you are afraid of heights, this may not be a lookout for you! I would not bring small children to this spot!

Breathtaking!

By TartanCat57 |

You can't get anymore gorgeous and dramatic than the Oregon Coast and Cape Perpetua is the creme de la creme. Parking, a visitor's center and walks will welcome you.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!

By Shilo D |

Stop by and see spouting horn and Thor's Well. The power of the water is impressive. The whole area is beautiful.....but those are must see places.

The highlight of our trip!

By Donna B |

There were so many things to see and do at Cape Perpetua Scenic Area: hiking trails, watching the spouts from whales, Thor's Well, Devil's Churn - and all of it was free! We checked the tides in advance and were lucky to get parking at high tide when most of the activity occurs. If you have a National Parks Pass, you can use that for parking.

One of natures finest

By eatsleeptour |

Beautiful area! The coastline is so dramatic, & the woods nearby are beautiful- such a contrast in nature. If you go to Oregon, you definitely need to stop and explore this area. It is one of natures finest!

Excellent

By Corinne S |

We had a great time here. Lots of nice paths to hike. Cool beach to beach comb. Once the info center was open the volunteers there were very helpful in directing us to the sites and the best time to see them. We even got great coffee and the coffee spot next door.
We really enjoyed it there.

Great place to spend the day

By Nancy T |

We thoroughly enjoyed our day trip here. We parked in the visitor's center lot, purchased a pass, and took the loop trail that goes to the tide pools. It was only 1 hour from high tide, so most of the tide pools were underwater. But we saw tadpoles in one, and we saw a couple of "holes" where the water "spouts" when a big wave comes in. The trail is paved all the way and lined with beautiful flowers, such as orchids and evening primrose. Then we drove to the overlook, which is the highest point you can reach by car on the Oregon Coast. It is a short walk from the parking area to the overlook. I would have liked to have hiked some of the longer trails, but I foolishly wore flip-flops. Will return someday with better footwear!

Wow!

By Mark C |

As a Michigander I am accustomed to great views of water. But the Oregon coast is beyond compare. Rocks, dunes, cliffs, forests, sea lions, whales, and more. Very cool.

Absolutely Beautiful!

By Kathy M |

This area offers so many hiking trails with scenery that is breathtaking. Be sure to drive the 2 miles up to the day use area and take a few short hikes around the area which reveals awe inspiring beauty. A visit to the visitors center is recommended and we bought a book which was much like a milepost of the Oregon coast that proved invaluable.

Disappointing

By opium05 |

I was excited to see thors well. Sadly there are no mentions of where it is in the descriptions of the trails and only one vague sign. The shelter on the hill was beautiful and a short walk but there was so much fog we could barely see more that 50ft out. The maps are not very helpful and the parking you can miss if you blink. I was so excited, so my recommendation is to not have high hopes and you won't be disappointed like I was.

Beautiful

By Life2Travel |

This area is worth a stop, make sure you start at the visitors center, there will be signs along the road to direct you. They can acclimate you to the area and what to see depending on the time you have and your physical capabilities. At a minimum, take a drive to the scenic overlook near the campground entrance for a panoramic view.

Spectacular Views

By Laura S |

My husband and I enjoyed our time at Cape Perpetua. We hiked the 2 mile round trip trail from the visitor's center to see the large spruce tree. The hike was well worth it to see the large tree. The sounds of the running stream along the path were very relaxing. We also drove up to the top and the views below were spectacular! We could see all the places like Devils Churn and Thor's well that we had done earlier in the day!

Gorgeous views

By Peter F |

When driving out of Yachats, you will pass through the Cape Perpetual scenic area. The entire area is breathtaking. You will want to pull over frequently to enjoy and photograph the amazing sights.

Amazing place!

By N_Seuss |

Well worth the visit! We walked out to Thor’s well, the spouting horn and devils churn. Bring your binoculars and sturdy shoes to maneuver over all of the volcanic rocks. Truly amazing!

One of the most beautiful areas on the Oregon Coast

By Have Camera, Will Travel |

We really enjoyed the Cape Perpetua area. We stopped at Thor's Well, which is amazing, we drove up to the Visitor Center, and checked out Cape Cove Beach. The only place we missed was Devil's Churn as the parking area was full when we drove past and we didn't go back that way when we headed out. The Visitor Center is really good. There is a wrap around deck that gives you some excellent views. You can hike down to the shore, but we did not have the time to do it.

This is a must stop if you are driving by.

The historical content of this beautiful region

By Robby G C |

First of all it is historical. There is an info panel about it.

On March 11, 1776 Captain James Cook with his crew fought against a storm.

Why did James Cook name this place: Cape Perpetus? It was the holy day of Saint Perpetua.

On the other side, it was the ocean and we were able to see its splendor.

Worthwhile to see!

Captivating area!

By Pam D |

There is so much to see here, and you don't want to miss any of it. Make sure you make it up to the visitor center. The volunteers and staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about flora, fauna, and the area.
The visitor center is the trailhead to a very easy 2 Mile RT hike to a giant Sitka spruce. You will be surrounded by incredible greenery and can envision dinosaurs roaming the area.
Don't miss a short walk from the wayside down to Devil's Churn and tidepools.
Just a little further down the road is another turnout with an easy walk down to Thor's Well.
The day use area also provides hiking trails with a great place to view whales.
Some of these areas are use fee areas.
Well worth it.

Cape"A slice of Heaven" Perpetua

By Tracy P |

In my opinion, the most beautiful, spectacular, jaw dropping part of the mighty OC!
Stop at the Devils Churn and pick up an espresso and fresh made brownie by Ky along with many other goodies. Close by is the cape Perpetua visitors center.
Cooks Chasm is a must do, but my favorite will always be Heceta Lighthouse. The most majestic and powerful light on the Oregon Coast. Take a tour... it's free. You can even stay the night at the light Keepers B&B, best views ever and they will serve you a 7 course breakfast. A bit further south is Sea Lion Caves, largest sea cave in North America. And way too many more wonders to list.
Watch out.... it'll steal you heart 💙

Spectacular

By Rebecca G |

This is well worth the stop. We took 2 short walks and were very pleased. We happened to be there during perfect weather.

The Famous Blow Hole

By Amnon F |

the main attraction is the blow hole named after Thor which is hypnotizing as the enters and slides out at the pulse of the sea. the entire area is covered by rocks worn by the sea with beautiful contours

One of our favorite sections of the Oregon coast!

By Jennifer S |

Don't miss this area! Lots of great things to see including tide pools, Thors Well, Spouting horn. Also, don't miss the drive up to the scenic view point and the short walk to the stone shelter. Not many people walk out to the shelter, so you most likely will have a little piece of heaven with one of the best views on the coast all to yourself! Plan according to the tide schedule as some of these sights are best at high tide!

I like to breath but

By leonardc538 |

Cape Perpetua is breathtaking. Look up tides and at high tide are spectacular sprays. This is a place where migratory birds from Japan and New Zealand come to visit, so look up times and bring binoculars!

One of the best hikes we've ever done- the views the deep rich scent of pine- wildflowers- trees- birds- and the ocean!

By Nancy T |

Our entire family enjoyed this tremendously- three young adult kids, and my husband and I. We all like different hiking but this suited all of us-- don't miss ! IT's so beautiful!

Spectacular Oregon Coast Views!

By Debra D |

The entire Cape Perpetua area is just spectacular--from the stunning coastline views, the visitor's center, and the hiking trails from there. During the summer, some gray whales stay and feed in the waters, not making the trip all the way north. We were able to see whales/spouts everywhere we looked. Do not miss this opportunity!

Just go

By Amy H |

It’s amazing! You will not regret it...it’s one of the best views on the Oregon coast. You can hike or drive to the top!

Rugged high vistas

By 6-13-1966 |

Some of oregons most beautiful coastal areas
Lots of pull off view points with wave 🌊 power displays. Worth the time for the hiker or driver 👍👍

Stunning!!!

By GregTrav28 |

There is a lot to see here, go down to the tide pools or Thor's Well.  Hike up part of the mountain and see some stunning views of the ocean or even take an old forest hike to some large trees.  It costs a few bucks but you can easily spend half a day here (or more!) and definitely not less than 2 hrs.  Try and plan out your day so you can be at Thor's Well at high tide for some fun water spouting.  It is some rocky hiking so wear sturdy shoes. This is the best part of the Central Oregon Coast!

Fabulous views, hiking, tide pools

By frequent1 |

First day we parked and hiked to Thors Well and spouting horn. Second day we parked at Devils Churn and hiked all the way around the cape including Amanda's trail. Ended up at the overlook. What an amazing place

Favorite spot

By Philentheos |

For watching surf on rocks, the spouting horn and Thor’s well, arrive at high tide, especially when there are stormy seas. This is one of our favorite areas on the coast.
Also available are beautiful forest hikes, the Giant Spruce and old growth hemlock forest.

Visitor Center closed

By Cynthia K |

We actually drove past & did the visitor center on the way back. Good thing, since it was closed. No reason given why. The bathrooms were open though with flush toilets.
We walked around the visitor center & left.

Definitely stop at Devils Churn & Cooks Chasm. Those 2 areas are worth it.

Must See

By WildHaireAdventures |

We so enjoyed the Cape Perpetua area while driving down the Oregon coast. The sure power of the tide here is amazing. This is a wonderful area to get out and stretch and see some amazing scenery. We loved the tide pools and the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks. Don’t miss this beautiful place.

Amazing! Not to be missed!

By brs054 |

I planned my whole trip around seeing Thor's Well, Devil's Churn, Spouting Horn and Cook's Chasm (all in Cape Perpetua) and I wasn't disappointed. But be sure to go at/near high tide or you won't catch Thor's Well or the Spouting Horn in action. I spent about 2 hours in Cape Perpetua just exploring the natural beauty and taking photos. If you're in the area, this can't be missed!

Beautiful and wild

By annabelle63102 |

We love coming here, and do so at least once a year. The views are spectacular and even when it is raining you can enjoy the big surf. We stop at the visitor center and talk with the rangers to see what is currently happening.

Don't miss the lookout!

By John S |

Just north of Thor's Well and south of Devil's Churn, there is a road with signage leading to the Cape Perpetua Day Use Area. The road climbs up a significant slope, and when you reach the top, there is an incredible view of the coast. You can even see Thor's Well from way above.

The Rocky Headlands of Cape Perpetua

By Wasabi Doggy |

This stretch of coastine, starting in Yachats and south to where the dunes suddenly start, is my favorite. So much drama in the craggy shoreline, steep slopes laced with ravines, and outlooks with paths to secluded beaches below around every twist in the road. Great to explore with the whole family.

Awesome views

By julie632015 |

This was a wonderful hike. Great views, and the trail was well maintained. We drove to the top and parked, hiked down and then back up. There is a small parking area at the bottom of the hike that we noticed when we finished our hike.

Oregon Coast at its best

By Linda C |

The Cape Perpetua Scenic Area includes Heceta Head Lighthouse and the information center between Yachats and Florence. This section of Hwy 101 is a photographer's dream as there are numerous places for dramatic surf, rock and sunset shots, plus the iconic lighthouse. There are plenty of good hikes in this area too. Get a copy of "Day Hiking - Oregon Coast" by Bonnie Henderson (The Mountain Press Books, page 121). If it's your first time here, stop in the Cape Perpetua Interpretive Center to read and see the lay of the land, the trail maps, and history of the place. It's a beautiful center. Then plan which direction you want to take on the trails. Some are easy and some are strenuous, so know before you head out. I recommend the Giant Spruce Trail for people with children, older walkers, and people with less stamina. It's an easier hike than Kittel-Amanda Trail.

Stop and stretch your legs

By dmarun |

Wonderfully scenic area with something for everyone. Coastal wonders, high cliff lookouts, hiking trails and, for those wanting a little less adventure, the Visitor's Center. Do not pass this by on your trip up (or down) the coast.

Well worth a visit

By Kate T |

Gorgeous area with a visitor center! Great hike to the Sitka Spruce. Amazing view from up top. Well worth the fee. We got 5 day pass.

Spectacular views

By Anja |

What a great place to wander about, there are lots of trails with great views! We hiked the trails at Devil’s Churn. Make sure you go during high tide to see and hear the big waves crash on the rocks. Great place! Also great hotdogs at the espresso stand!

Something for all

By Amy H |

Even though it was a cloudy day, we enjoyed all that we saw at Cape Perpetua. Thor's Well, Spouting Horn even the Stone structure did not disappoint. Great tidepools and fun for all of the family to enjoy.

Beautiful day. Can go all the way to the top by car or hike. Clean, beach access. Park ranger was super friendly. Keep your puppy on a leash to protect sea life.

Beautiful and rugged

By SallyinOKC |

Beautiful coastal area to visit. Take hiking boots or shoes with a very sturdy sole or the volcanic rock will bruise your feet.

Spectacular view - walk or drive up

By ccriderYVR |

Wonderful view of the cape. There are trails that go off towards the visitor Center and can be hiked up to the top. You can also drive up to the top and having a picnic or go for short explorations on the trails.

See the map screen shot that I have included to give you an idea of the area. If you drive up the road on the left before the visitor Center, you can go up to the top.

Parking is $5 that you place in a drop box in a self service envelope.

From here you can see down the cost and down to Thor’s well which should also be on your visit list as it is just down the road.

Special Area For Scenery

By Dan W |

The wild Oregon coastline is certainly represented on this stretch of Highway from Yachats to Florence. The views are spectacular and highlighted by The Devils Churn. There is a visitors center which is unfortunately closed to to the pandemic but the deck area is open for viewing into the instant shoreline and magnificent waves.

hiking

By lib22490 |

great hike from either the top of Cape Perpetua or from the base. Wonderful ocean views. The hike is easy in places and mildly hard in others.

2 mile winding drive

By SeattleReebs |

The lookout at the top of the two mile winding drive is well worth it. I took a camper van up and had no problem with the road. And RV could likely do it. Get out, shoot some photos, and journey on.

Excellent Visitor Center with interpretative displays

By Katharine L |

The interpretative display of the local flora was impressive and obviously a significant time commitment by the volunteer who takes it on each day. The trails are well maintained and visitor center staff were out and about and welcomed questions. This is a perfect spot to stop and admire the spectacular views and to learn about the area, and get ideas of where to stop next along the coast.

Do not miss this amazing site

By carlotaTravel4fun |

Park at the visitor’s center and pay the park fee at the visitor’s center. If you have the America the Beautiful Pass, you can use it here. The volunteers in the visitor’s center are very helpful and informative. Thank you to Gladys for answering all our questions and providing advice on the surrounding area. To see Thor’s Well and Spouting Horn, take the trail right outside the visitor’s center. It is clearly marked and will lead you under the highway toward the coast. The trail dead ends and you can go to the right to see the Devil’s Churn, or to the left toward Thor’s Well and Spouting Horn. We had seen the Devil’s Churn the day before by parking in the adjacent lot on Highway 101, so we only went to the left, but many did both. The power of the waves crashing on the rocks was incredible, It is better to see this at high tide as that is when the Spouting Horn lets loose and the water flows through Thor’s Well. The volunteers can tell you when the high tide will occur so you can time your visit. We visited the center after seeing Devil’s Churn, found out the time of high tide, and came back the next day at high tide.

Don’t Miss

By SonomaNut |

One of the highlights along the Oregon coast. Visitors Center closed but maps are at hand. Make sure you do Devil’s Churn, Thor’s Well and hard to find road to overlook, shown as “day use area” on map.

Breathtaking! Loved the easy access to so much raw natural beauty

By Chicogirl2015 |

Be sure to drive to the summit on a sunny day for great views and carefully explore the Thor's well and churn area.

Absolutely beautiful

By Dan S |

Cape Perpetua is stunning and memorable. We spent 4 hours including a drive to the top. Several trails get you ocean or deep forest views- don’t miss the giant Spruce trail. Best seen at high tide if you want to see the wave action at Devils Churn and other wave generated noise makers!

Majestic and Beautiful

By SessieCee |

This view greeted us right off of our balcony. The Fireside Motel has lights that illuminate the breakers at night.

Some of the waves hit the shore with such force they spray straight into the air at impressive heights. One lady sat too close on a rock and got soaked.

Photos don’t do it justice at all.

Great Area to Check Out

By Garfieldluvr |

I wish we would have stayed here a bit longer, but we walked around a got to see most of the main area. This is a beautiful area with lots of neat water features, tide pooling opportunities, and scenic vistas. A must stop on the Ccast.

Fantastic place for nature lovers

By Gunta14 |

We had a beautiful visit to Cape Perpetua Scenic Area. Hiking the trails really adds so much to the experience. We'll definitely be back for more once the season calms down.

Very scenic area

By LisaMNUSA |

The area was very beautiful. We saw a whale here. The sprouting horn and thundering hole were very interesting. We drove to the top of the hill, walked the 0.2 mile loop, the overlook was amazing.

Stunning scenery.

By DawnLez |

This is a must stop on your Oregon 101 road trip. The friendly and helpful staff at the centre will point you in the right direction and there are also interesting exhibits laid out in the centre. Take your camera but also just stand and watch the power of the ocean and enjoy the gorgeous scenic views. A bit of walking involved to see everything but well worth it.

We went for a walk.

By 4duffy2 |

The way I hiked with my friends is not way hiked with the Tuesday Trekkers, but it was all good. We hiked down to the tide pools. We were exploring. It was a great hike.

Beautiful Views of the Coast

By Andrea F. |

We visited at low tide, so we were able to see the tide pools. We did the short hike to the giant spruce, recommended by the nice employee in the visitor center. She was very helpful, and suggested several things we might want to do/see based on our interests. The trip to the top and walk to the stone shelter is a must-do; the views there are incredible! The next time we visit, I will make sure it's at high tide, so that we get the full effect of some of the other sights, like Thor's Well.

Definitely Worth Stopping

By PandaHouston |

The Cape Perpetua Area pertains to different sites (Sprouting Horn, Thor's Well, Devil's Churn). Each one is worth a stop but there might be some issues with parking because the area is quite popular.

There are no Day Use fees for any of these sites and it is worth a stop nor does it require a huge amount of effort. Even when we came on Monday 7/26 in the middle of the afternoon, the area was quite crowded.

Great view

By Kieande |

This is a great place to go and take some scenic pictures and get some sight seeing info. We were told about Thor’s well and how to find it which is just not far from the look out. There is another scenic area the cape perpetua day camp area.

So beautiful, I didn't want to write this review

By SFTraveler009 |

The Cape Perpetua Scenic Area, including the Visitor's Center, Cape Perpetua, Trail of the Whispering Spruce, et al, is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. I hardly want to attract more visitors... Still, I would be remiss in not letting my fellow TripAdvisor readers know what a treat it is to stop in at the Visitors Center, hike the trail of the Giant Spruce, look out at the top of Cape Perpetua and generally revel in the incredible natural beauty. There is no way to go wrong here - you can drive around and take most of it in without too much physical exertion, or you can hike from the visitors center to the top of Cape Perpetua, which is an extreme workout in and of itself.

Beautiful Park, nice trails

By Jerri L |

Great hikes and well marked trails. We spent the late afternoon here and hiked the discovery trail, very scenic through the forest area with glimpses of the ocean. It has a pretty good uphill climb until you get to the high point then it gradually comes back down. There are other trails that branch off and all signage clearly marks distance and direction.

The visitor center had closed while we were on our hike (4pm), but had maps and other information if you visited when it was open. A sandwich board out front had some information on hours.

The trails to the Devil’s Churn, Spouting Horn and Thor’s Well were very nicely paved and clearly marked. These trails had a few steps but were easy to hike.

Breathtaking

By Candace R |

This was wonderful, it’s so worth the drive. So we opted to hike around, doing 7 miles total from leaving to approaching our vehicle. We enjoyed the water, Devils Churn (where we parked), Thor’s Well, and more. We hiked up to the shelter. If you’re older, infirm or otherwise not inclined to hike, there are many places to park along the way to view all the different sites and there is parking at the top to see the shelter. Dogs are welcome, we brought ours along and he loved it. There’s a fee at the parking areas unless you have certain passes, we have the Oregon Coast pass which is honored here so our vehicle was safe and watched over.

After local recommendation

By Helia_linne |

We had not plan to stop there but based on the local recommendation we did. It was good reward for the short side turn from hwy 101.

Beautiful spot

By RestaurantPassion |

It’s always fun to take a hike in Cape Perpetua, even in the mist. And the people in the Visitor Center are most friendly and helpful. Especially neat is to watch the Spouting Horn.

Quintessential Rocky Shores

By ZenDark30 |

Oregon’s Central Coast is known for its rocky shores, meaning great for tide pooling, interesting geology and steep cliffs.

Cape Perpetua, visitor center, managed by the U.S. Forest Service sits atop a cliff with a 360° view. Not open now due to Covid one can still walk around the deck and get the views. There are several short 1 1/2 mile trails that go to high points like the 563 year old Sitka spruce. You can either drive or walk to the stone shelter made by the CCC‘s in the 1930s.

Whether it was the pandemic or winter weather we hardly saw anyone on the beaches and no one on the trails. It’s a good time to go if you want a quiet escape. Dress warm and bring rain gear.

Amazing scenery!!

By Bobby Vilas |

Just an incredible stretch of coastline! Don't let a little fog stop you. Really adds to the drama of the coast.

Cape Perpetua

By Joan34232 |

This is a beautiful place. There's a loop to walk where you can go down to the rocks and explore tide pools. We saw it as the tide was coming in so not the full effect of what can be seen.

The hidden gem of the Oregon Coast

By YvonneP1979 |

My family and I are lucky enough to call this area home! Cape Perpetua is a regular stop for family or solo day trips. This area is majestic to say the least and there is so much to explore in just a few miles. Go to the top and view the most Amazing view from the historic look out or hike down to a giant spruce tree through a magical forest, check out the Spouting Horn on high tide or venture down to Thors Well on a low tide (high tide can be very dangerous to get close)! Walk along the trails and stand in awe of the Native American shell Middens leftover from hundreds of years of gathering from the ocean!

My Favorite

By oek9mom |

This area was one of my favorites of all the coastal scenic areas & parks I visited last year. Make sure to visit this one for sure.

One of the best views of Oregon coast

By CalvinDudley |

Great for full range of coastal experience. All at one location you can embark on multiple hiking trails deep into old growth forests. Home to special giant Sitka spruce. Can. Hike down to waters edge experience tide pools at low tide. A wonderfully educational visitors center. And best of all up on top of Cape Perpetual a wonderful unique view of the Oregon coast...easily accessible. Truly a unique place.

On a clear day, you can see forever.

By srnwood |

Don't be daunted by the drive up the cliff. Park at the top and walk out to the lookout tower. It's an easy path, short enough for elderly or disabled to probably do it without too much difficulty. So, so worth it. On a clear day, you can see forever.

Great view of the ocean

By Michael P |

Highest drive-able point in Oregon, breath taking views and great little hike from the visitor center to the Spruce.

Fantastic Viewpoint

By david92130 |

This is one of the best viewing spots on the central Oregon coast. There is a very good visitor center, and the staff there can give good advice on the best things to see. One important thing to do there is to purchase the Oregon Pacific Coast Passport. It costs $10 and is good for 5 days at most of the state and national areas along the coast. Without it there is a $5 day use fee at each site, so if you will be on the coast two or more days this is a good deal. You can also buy these at other sites along the coast and these can be found on the internet.

Note that there are two entrances off Highway 101 into the area. The one furthest South goes to the visitor center and this should be your first stop. The one further North is the drive to the top of the cape, with the best viewing points and several historical attractions. A map you get at the visitor center will help you find these.

Beautiful stretch of rocky coastline

By SnowyShasta |

The Cape Perpetua Scenic Area is a stretch of the Oregon Coast near Yachats, near the center of Oregon. We spent a couple nights here on a recent road trip. A nice first stop is to drive up to the overlook (about 15 minutes of driving from the coast highway), which gives a panoramic view of the entire area (although be aware that morning fog can turn it into a view of cloud/fog instead).

We also enjoyed spending time exploring various of the rocky features along the coast, including Thor's Well, Spouting Horn, and Devil's Chasm as our favorites. The kids had a good time exploring the rocks and viewing the ocean. We spent several hours wandering various beaches and pullouts and enjoyed the morning.

Let the Visitor Center staff help you find a hike/walk

By 702lv |

In the forest, with ocean views, on the beach, easy or only for seasoned hikers...there is a walk or overlook for you. The kind and patient staff at the Visitor Centers are a great resource. They helped us find out perfect forest hike which we'll do again whenever we return. So many tourists miss how beautiful the coastal forest is.

Awesome Beauty and Amazing Sites

By David R |

We were so glad we made this a part of our Oregon coast tour! The uniqueness of Thor's Well and the lava tide pool area and the coast beauty and hike was great for all levels of hikers.

Outstanding views

By Chris1963 |

You must take the 2 mile drive up to the top of Cape Perpetua and see the view from the stone building. It's unbelievable how far you can see up and down the coastline. It was an easy hike in and out.

Cape Perpetua

By Eileen B |

This is a must see! Powerful wave action that sounds like thunder deep inside the rocks. I’d go again in a heartbeat!

Incredible place

By James c |

This entire area is just breathtaking. This is probably the best stop on the otegon coast. First do Thor's well area where there are tide pools with many starfish. Thor's well is just mesmerizing , as you watch the ocean water rise in and drift out. I could have watched for hours!

There are blueberries and raspberry bushes all along the ground above.

You then drive about an eight of a mile to devils churn which is another geological formation and a wonder in itself. Make sure you have good tread on your shoes for this place especially if you're gonna hike down to the formations. I would come back to oregon just to see this place with sunshine as our day was cloudy and a little drizzle. These weather conditions by no means took away from the scenery

One of the best spots on the Pacific Coast

By relayer |

This was our second time here. Just spectacular scenery everywhere. For the best results, one needs to get explore the area on foot, there is so much to see from the rugged coast line to the Perpetua Overlook that is 800 feet above the ocean.

Cape Perpetua hike

By Tom B |

From the visitor center, take the 2.2 mile round-trip St. Perpetua hike to the top of the mountain to get an incredible view of the Oregon coast. The hike is steep, but the view is terrific. The park is dog-friendly with a number of hikers bringing their leashed dogs with them (as we did). There is also a road that leads nearly to the top, but doesn't offer the same majestic views. There is a $5 parking fee at the visitor center.

Great visitor center and trails

By Donna S |

We drove to the Whispering Pines loop for a 0.3 mile walking loop. It's the highest point on the Oregon Coast that you can drive to. Great views out to sea and up and down the coast. Well worth the drive/hike for spectacular views!

Amazing coastal views

By Vic C |

Driving along the coast here was absolutely breathtaking. Amazing views and so many interesting places to stop.

Don't pass by this great location!

By peter l |

Cape Perpetua offers a wide range of hiking trails, to an interesting surf blowhole (Thor's well) to the Devil's Churn area with impressive surf. Just as a warning, there are a lot of steps to reach the Devil's Churn, but it's well worth the exertion. The Giant Spruce trail is well worth taking, that is indeed one huge tree. You can take the Spruce trail from the visitor's center for a two mile roundtrip or drive to the end of the campground and park there for a half mile roundtrip.

Best as high tide comes in.

By westie2 |

Our introduction to this area was at the interpretive center where we found a spot in the almost full lot. There are several exhibits that proved helpful as were the staff. After exiting the building, we took a 3/4 mile Captain Cook trail to Cook's Chasm where, during high tide, waves colliding with the rocky shore sending spray skyward. Unfortunately, our arrival coincided with low tide though the walk still proved worthwhile for the view. On the day following we took another trail to Devil's Churn to see the waves crashing against the rocky sides. A short drive brought us back to Cook's Chasm where we again followed the trail down to view Spouting Horn and Thor's Well. The tide was rolling in so we got a decent view of each, the former sending a spray skyward each time a large wave came in. The latter was like a 360 degree waterfall filling when the waves came in and emptying as the waves went back out.

Lots to see

By Patricia G |

Beautiful views (even in the fog); whales, seals, birds; a must see; easily accessible; lots of photo opportunities.

Absolutely Beautiful!

By krschoen |

Cape Perpetua is an absolutely breath-taking area! My husband, dog and I spent the better half of a day exploring all the trails and sights, all of which were beautiful. Stop at the visitors center for a map and recommendations, as they were very friendly and helpful. Park fees were $5 per car, and dog-friendly (on a 6 ft leash). If you don’t have the time to do it all, at least check out Spouting Horn!

Beautiful Views

By swearengen |

We took the drive up to the top of the mountain and walk a few of the paths. The view is amazing. The stone shelter was pretty cool as well.

Spectacular location despite the incredible winds!

By Brssjunk |

Being photographers, this is a place that you must see. The coast line is very rough with spectacular features including spectacular waves and water spouts. We parked at the second parking lot which meant that we walked back about 1/4 mile, but there were many wonderful views along the way. Be prepared for the winds though. One person told us that the reason that it was called Cape Perpetua was the perpetual winds. That might not have been the reason, but the winds were significant.

Day in the sun with camera

By Bruce B |

Took the day to see and explore Cape Perpetua on the central Oregon Coast. Was a perfect day to hike and see everything. Easy walks if you have good feet and legs.

Don’t Miss This View

By Michelle008_800 |

Make sure you don’t drive past this overlook. It’s a narrow winding road to the top but worth it. The view is amazing from the top. We sat on a bench and ate our lunch looking out over this beautiful coast. Just stunning!

worth a visit

By Laura B |

Really fun to view the water spouts, from afar, or up close. Just be prepared to get wet! Served as a great cautionary example, for the teen who didn't quite want to believe the parent's warnings about the power of the waves, esp. the "sneaker" waves as tide coming in!

Well worth it to see Thor's well!

By j22445 |

We stopped at this beach to visit Thor's well and it was awesome. Like nothing we had ever seen before. We visited a lot of beaches along the Oregon coast and it was definitely worth the stop. Make sure you walk out and see Thor's well up close if you are able. Expect to get a little wet if you do!

Absolute Heaven!

By medaliaR |

Best at High Tide or storms to see the most incredible action but outstanding exploration any time. So many trails to hike, rocks to climb on and tide pools at low tide. Great area for agate hunters. Go up high to the lookout for an unbelievable view of the coastline. So much too see and do so plan at minimum a full day to explore.

Overwhelming view of nature's power.

By Voyager10958 |

Wonderful personnel at the park headquarters, very helpful. Great hiking trails and the cliffs overlooking the ocean are worth the time.

Wonderful camping trip

By Madeline Cook |

Cape perpetua is so beautiful with its varying landscapes. From lava rock tide pools to smooth sandy beaches and dramatic cliff sides that provide expansive views, it is definitely a place that is well worth the visit. The marine layer (fog) comes in usually in the evening to the early morning and gives a very dramatic and mystical feel.

Highlight of our trip

By Cheyb29 |

We visited at low tide so we got to see tide pools but I bet that Thor’s Well at high tide would be breath taking. I was still amazed by it and Devil’s Churn as well as the view of the ocean. The orange things on the rock are starfish and we also saw crab. It’s gorgeous and majestic and was my favorite stop on the coast.

Simply Amazing

By Koto-Bax |

This place is simply amazing. Do yourself a favor and do some of the easier hikes, it'll be well worth your time. The views are spectacular!

Feels like you're at the top of the world!

By Julie C |

This was an amazing experience. We chose to drive up to the viewpoint instead of hiking it because the weather was raining on and off. You take the turnoff for Cape Perpetua campground, but stay on the road to the left. A couple miles in, you'll see a turnoff to the left for Cape Perpetua lookout. There is a parking area and (not so clean) porta potty, along with some picnic tables. The trail is off the left side of the parking area. There's a couple of branch offs along the trail, but I think they all loop around to the same place. I believe the main trail is called "whispering spruce" and another loop off it called "Amanda's trail". The main trail leads to an old Civil Servant lookout that was used during WWII for a lookout. The trail itself is quite easy, but there are a couple of sections with mossy steps, so not a good plan for anyone with mobility issues. If you want more of a workout, there's a pullout on the north side of the road right after the fork with the campground. You can park there and hike up to where the trail connects with the trail from the parking area. It appears steep and a good physical challenge, although it was a gentleman who appeared to be in his 70's who told us about the trail as he was hiking up it. The view from the top seems endless. It's a much better part of the coast to see than the typical tourist viewpoints along the main highway. Well worth the effort!

Stunning

By Susan612 |

Just love the views at Cape Perpetual. There are also some very doable hikes that leave from the Visitor Center.

Beautiful scenic vista

By Davigeta |

The visitors center is closed, but a relatively short drive takes you to an 800 foot high vantage point, where you get a great look at the coastline south of the Cape. Worth the drive. We did not drive to the nearby giant spruce tree.

Wonderful view

By Tammie M |

We should up a bit late and did not have time to do the trails.
But we able to see the beautiful view on the short trail from the parking lot.
If you are short on time, this is one place to go.
You can see Devil’s Churn from here.

Best views on the Oregon coast

By esconopeles |

I suppose "best" view is a matter of personal choice, but it you are near Perpetua and you fail to check it out, you are missing a spectacular spot. From 800 feet above the Pacific you will think you can see all the way to Japan. I even know Alaskans who claim they can see Russia from there. Come to Oregon and spend all that extra money you are getting from the middle class tax break.

Beautiful tide pools!

By Ldguy1 |

This was on of my favorite stops along the coast. Beautiful views, great trails and amazing tide pools. We stopped and got smoked salmon and cheese and had a picnic lunch. There is a picnic table overlooking the coast and trees which is beautiful. The trail to the tide pools is about .5 miles and is pretty easy. The return is uphill. To see the hood stuff, go one hour before low tide and walk way out onto the rocks to see all the small pools. Lots of beautiful creatures in there.

Awesome place

By rick700raptor |

Incredible views, amazing chasm, best hot dogs ever at the little stand. one of the most scenic spots on the Coast, my daughter called it Cape purpatoota when she was little so the name stuck. LOL

Breathtaking!

By Sheila G |

There are many hiking options here, from short, flat nature walks to fairly strenuous trails with some elevation gain, but whatever you choose you will not be disappointed. The lush greenery, whether you are looking up at the magnificent trees or the dense understory of ferns and mossed covered deadfall, will restore your spirit. Take deep breaths and fill your lungs with the combined smells of the forest and the ocean! And don't miss going to the top of the Cape and looking down on the vast Pacific. Whales can often be spotted here, more easily that from on shore.

Just incredible!

By valueourveterans |

The coastal drive heading south from Yachats to Florence us exceptional! A must drive to take! Breathtaking scenery!

Very exciting at high tide

By Joanne |

Definitely choose to go to this area at high tide. Thor's well - up fairly close, is very beautiful to watch. Each time the water goes back down the well, it is beautiful. Spouting horn is really neat. You do need to be patient to see it really "blow". And devil's churn is awesome. It is fun to climb on the rocks and view it from different angles. It is great to see it at the level of the rocks, not just from the viewing area. High tide is awesome when you witness the power of the sea. Hiking back to the giant sitka tree is also beautiful. It is a mile back to the tree. It does have some changes in elevation. The tree is huge! The scenery along the way is very scenic. Much different from the coastal sites. Fun to see this whole area. The visitor center gives out lots of information too.

Lots of Wows!

A must see and stop on your coastal explorations. This entire area is worth any stop to view and photo.

Cameras are a MUST

By Kate I |

What an amazing area of the Oregon Coast line within the Suislaw National Forest. Short easy walk under the freeway to view Thor's Well, the blow hole and some amazing wave action! A good time to view INSIDE Thor's Well (if you are brave) is low tide (Park Rangers can give you a tide chart when you go into the visitor center) - you can see through the bottom of the well and the the ocean swells that has not quite reached the interior of the well. The BEST time to view is at high tide then you can see the action of the well as the swells are forced up through the well and then drawn down through the opening at the bottom. WAY COOL! The blow hole is pretty neat too. You may have to wait a bit here to get a really good shot of the action! YOU HAVE TO SEE these oceanic features!

Sprink Break visit

By James |

We drove the entire Oregon Coast. This was one of our favorite stops. It's busy and not a lot of parking. So arrive earlier than later. Views are spectacular. Vintage Oregon Coast. What you expect to see when you think of the Oregon coastline.

Hike

By Anita H |

Did the Cape Perpetua hike, up the side of a hill overlooking the Pacific in Cape Perpetua park. The trail starts at the Visitors' Center, goes across a small road, then up. Can be done in either direction. Nice climb, few people, many switchbacks up to an overlook at the top, and an upper parking lot with bathrooms. Well worth it. Spectacular views. beautiful wildflowers, deep woods and open hillside. One of my favorite hikes.

Nice views

By wvillamil |

I hiked with my wife from a neighborhood in yachats to the Amanda statue on the Oregon coast trail, it took about an hour. The views of the coast and forest were amazing

Great views

By fredzelhart |

This is a good place to stop and view the ocean if you are heading down to/from Thor's Well. Good views, pathway down to the water.

Great stop on any 101 road trip

By Lawrence O |

Be sure to check out the lookout at the top of the hill. Turn left toward camping area and go up the hill where you can take a short trail to a rock shelter built by the CCC. Interpretive Center is nice too, although we didn't stop in this time. Low tide is excellent for going across the street to the beach and exploring the rock formations.

An interesting stop south of Yachats.

By Edmund1138 |

Spend some time here and see what the Oregon coast looks like. Be sure and see Captian Cooks Cove and the Spouting Horn, an easy walk and well worth it..

Lovely area of Oregon Coast

By Barbara F |

I loved Cape Perpetual - there is much to see there and lots of trails which are lovely, well maintained and safe for a single woman to hike. I didn't camp but I walked through the camp ground which is right by the river and it was a really good place for camping, better than most, each site seemed well done, fairly private and scenic.

Nice drive, lots of trails

By wolfgirlemt |

There is a lot to see and do here- it's a nice drive around the area and there are tons of trails you can hike. Most of the major sites can also be seen from the road if you are not big into hiking. The lookout point near the visitors center is worth going to visit- the view is really spectacular.

Seals

By evaack2016 |

Many seals to view, so take your binoculars. '

Lots of sleeping seals are viewable with binoculars
Spectacular scenery and extremely interesting visitors.

Captain Cook’s Trail

By JBRetired |

Nice trail some up hill on the way back. Starts at the visitors center. We did see the Spouting horn and a lot of good views. However we were there at low tide better at hgh tide.

Amazing

By Local traveler |

You must stop in this area of he coast, and also visit Cape Perpetua Overlook. Stop by the info booth at the entrance on 101 and get the day or 4 day for the Oregon coast pass. We met an amazing couple (from FL),working the info booth and they suggested we go to the overlook. Probably one of the highlights of the trip

Beautiful coastline and viewpoint

By Karen M |

This is a beautiful part of the mid Oregon coast, with a wonderful viewpoint offering breathtaking views up and down the coast. There are a number of good trails here as well, and the coast offers attractions such as Thor's Well and the Devil's Churn.

The Views with or without the hike

By Global Flavors and Journeys |

Cape Perpetua is one of those Oregon Coast gems that blends adventure and accessibility. Part of a 15-mile trail system, it offers several ways to explore—from rain forest hikes to breathtaking overlooks. But don’t worry if hiking isn’t on your agenda—the main viewpoint is the highest car-accessible point on the Oregon Coast. You can simply drive up, take a short walk, and enjoy panoramic views that stretch for miles.

It’s the kind of place that makes you stop, breathe, and appreciate how beautiful the Oregon coastline is. Whether you’re up for a long trail or just a scenic stop, Cape Perpetua delivers an unforgettable experience.

Gorgeous, Amazing and Relaxing

By Business P |

You must visit here. California’s beaches have nothing on the awesome beauty of this place. Do check seasonal weather though - I bet it’s brutal in the winter. Late summer or early fall is probably optimal.

Wow!!

You are now in one of those areas that words simply don't explain! Every step and every view is just breathtaking! You will understand clearly why Oregon doesn't have a "beach", we have a "coastline"!

Splendour beyond Words

By Sassamatt |

Words cannot describe and cameras do not do justice to the dramatic splendour of Cape Perpetua. Here, visitors can take in the drama of water churning and spouting at Devil's Churn. The visitors's centre is one of the most easily accessible viewpoint for an overview, but finding a place to park can ve a challenge. .

Part of a beautiful drive on the central OR coast

This was on the drive to the hotel - it was beautiful and the sea was angry with high waves. You can drive by and view it or stop and walk around.

Beautiful Coastal Views

By MacRanger |

It’s worth taking the time to hike the trails to Thor’s Well, The Spouting Horn at Cooks Chasm and the Devils Churn. There’s more wave action when nearing high tide. Turn East off of Hwy101 at the campgrounds and stay left (not entering the campgrounds to drive to the highest viewpoint on the Oregon Coast (800 ft). It’s just a short walk from the parking lot to the west Shelter Observation Point which was constructed for WW II. It’s a spectacular view on a clear day.

Lots of wave action on the rocks during high tide or storms

By Jeff G |

My wife and I always visit Cape Perpetua on our Newport stays. One photo is of the Devil's Churn, a short hike from the visitor center. The other photo shows wave action on the rocks near the punchbowl and blowhole, a short hike to the south from the visitor center. Make sure to wear good wind breakers and layer for warmth if it is cold.

Great views from the top of the Cape

By Buck W |

The Cape has many beautiful things to see. Cook's Chasm is a place where the ocean has cut into the basalt formation and created it's own inlet. As the tide and waves rush in at high tide, you can see the spouting horn and hear the rush of air escaping before the water spouts through. To get to the overlook at the top of the cape, there is a road about 200-300 yards north of the visitor center road off 101. After you turn onto the road, take the right fork for a two mile trip to the top of the cape. The views from there are fantastic. There are also several trails. If you approach from the south, you may be able to see people 700-800 feet up at the top of the cape.

Bad timing

We were there at the bad moment (tidewise) to see the chasm and devil thing etcetera but did enjoy all the views, walks and tidal pools a lot!

Amazing Beauty

We stopped by and fell in love with this beautiful area. The views are absolutely stunning. The ocean was a blue-green on this sunny day and the photos we took through the trees amazing!

Must stop along the coast

By Vistaviewer77 |

Many lookout points along this stretch of coast. If you go to the visitor center you will need a rec pass. It had closed when we arrived but nice shady parking and handicap access. Around the center is a level boardwalk with lookouts. Pathway takes you under the highway to access the beach. Stairs lead down from the walkway. This area has it all - crashing surf, tide pools, Thor’s well, whales. Visited at low tide so not sure how far the water gets at high tide. You can see this area from the highway but make a stop to take it all in..

Awesome even during gale force winds

By denise b |

The various stacks, tidal pools and scenery makes a great day. We were out there during "high winds" and while it would have been more comfortable in a warm, sunny day, it was well worth the walk

Big beautiful building with helpful staff

By Ariel S |

The visitors center was much bigger and newer than we expected. There was some very nice interactive displays for children and the whale watching deck was quite nice. The staff were also very helpful and gave excellent tips on hiking, safety (a very good idea during the spring with sneaker waves), and even parking.

Amazing tidal pools

We came up from Florida. I have been here three times. The Cummins Creek trail is a don't miss. Great campground, and the tidal pools are amazing.

Best view on the coast

By siina m |

We always love stopping here for a hike or stroll on their many trails. The best view can be had at the top, at the stone shelter. It's a short walk to an amazing view. Take a coat, it is often gusty and cold.

Views from the cape were outstanding

By tyandjess |

The views were stunning and it was a nice hike down to the visitors center. Lazy tip: have someone drive you to the top and then hike down. The old growth is amazing.

Devils Churn was ok, but my experience might have been limited by the rain and the tide not being right.

Wonderful state park

By mgward3560 |

A great little park just south of Yachats. National Park passes accepted. Some wonderful easy hikes in the main park. You can hike or drive to the top of the cape for some exceptional views. A short little loop trail at the top is well worth your time. Come at high tide to see the Spouting horn and Devils Churn at their best. Give yourself at least 5 hours to really see all that this park has to offer.

Amazing

This is natures wonderland!!! Thors well is a must see, stop at the Visitor Centre for help finding it, the volunteer gave us a lot of information. Loved this stop!!!

Spectacular view!

By kevan j |

There are lots of beautiful places in this area. I recommend driving up to the Cape Perpetua Lookout and making the absolutely amazing short hike out to the stone hut at the Cape Perpetua Overlook. The road up is a lot of fun. Head east for about a half mile on NFD 55 and turn left onto the steep and windy Cape Perpetua Lookout Road. Follow this road for a little less than a mile and you're there. The views from here are spectacular. We hiked the little loop trail out to the stone hut built by the CCC. All along the way, we could look down on the ocean from above with towering vistas both north and south along the coast as well as out to sea. Very few people there...we had it pretty much to ourselves. Highly recommended!

Spectacular

By flametamer911 |

Even though we never saw any whales, it a great vantage point to view out to sea with complementary binoculars. In side the build there were loads of displays and educational material. The staff were ready to help you out with all your questions.

A beautiful place!

By Lisa G |

We truly enjoyed our time exploring this area. There is a scenic walking path, and you can also go down to the shoreline to check out the tide pools. This a great place to enjoy the beauty of the Oregon Coast!

Could spend hours and hours here.

By Cathy B |

We parked at the visitors center and walked the trail to the ocean and then explored all of the trails branching off from that. Thor's Well was amazing and we feared for the lives of the photographers who were standing at its edge! Fortunately, we were there at around high tide so it was pretty dramatic. We'd love to go back when we have more time to hike more of the trails there.

An area with multiple marine attractions

By Robert S |

This is another of the capes named by Captain Cook.
This area is full of explosive waterworks at high tide. So, get your tide charts out, and remember that powerful water on the Oregon Coast can be dangerous.

Beautiful coastline

The hikes are all lovely, and there is something for virtually any activity level. We hiked, saw tide pools, sat in conveniently placed benches, watched seals and more on this picturesque Oregon coastline.
