Love this market!

By flt587 |

The Capitol Market is one of my favorite places to shop and browse during all seasons. The restaurants are great and the people are so nice in the shops. Nice, clean restaurants. My favorite is to go through the outside vendors and chat:))

I will always come back

By Holly J |

Absolutely love this market the whole set up down to the check out .. A lot of different items and great people
All with different great food

Interesting place

By Cheryl D |

They have lots of products from the local area. Interesting foods and the people were very helpful and friendly.

Great Visit!

By Justin C |

Just wanted a quick trip but we found so many great products we stayed a little longer than planned. Fresh produce while a little more expensive this year, we both prefer to spend the money where it goes directly back to the farms. Grocery stores charge outrageous prices. Highly recommend! Coming soon again in the fall for pumpkins!

A "Must See" When Visiting Charleston WVA! Veggies, Flowers, Shops, Coffee Bar, Restaurants, Gifts, & More!

By MariefromGeorgia |

This place has so many different specialty shops that you can spend hours enjoying all that it has to offer. While there are veggie and flower shops outside, they also have veggies inside in a spot called The Purple Onion Fruit & Veggie Co. Spending time at the Capitol Market would be perfect for either a rainy, cold day or a blistering hot one as well. My friend, Allison and I started at one end(The purple Onion)and slowly walked all the way to the end where the ATM, Bathrooms, & SOHO restaurant is located. We saw Hollis Swiss Chocolatier fine chocolate shop, Johnnies Fresh Meat Market, Visitor's Center, Sushi Garden, The Fresh Seafood Co., The Wine & Cheese Shop, WVA Market Place(Blenco & Ron Hinkle glass, local & WVA products), and Mea Cuppa Coffee Bar. That is all that I can remember, there may have been more inside. I did not even get time to go outside to look because we had to get ready for her son's graduation. You could easily spend half a day here enjoying all that it has to offer, eat lunch, grab a cup of coffee, and pick up some fresh flowers & veggies as well. It is not far from the Civic Center , Public Library, and that mini museum for Shoney's Big Boy at the end of Kanawha Blvd. If you decide to visit the Big Boy, look across the street and you will see Drug Emporium & attached health food store, Healthy Life. This place is amazing and also has a wide variety of items from a health food, pharmacy, garden items, clothes, to sketchers shoes!

I worked right down the street at the Capitol building

By sweetymoss |

I worked right down the street at the Capitol building. Love going there had the best produce an interesting items

By Bluebarnman |

This is a great seasonal outdoor open air market, the local vendors are top notch with their products. You can find just about anything at this market if it is in season. I visit weekly for the best finds. Some weeks it is bedding plants or fresh greens. The next it might be fresh herbs or local berries picked in neighboring counties. And when sweet corn comes in there are always so many choices.

Neat place

By kagatlin |

Nice place to visit for shopping or lunch. They have fresh fruits and vegetables as well as plants and flowers. There are several shops selling all manner of food stuffs, gifts and frufru.

Wonderful places to visit to eat, buy homemade WV goods, awesome farmers market & fresh meats & seafood.

Good place to browse and spend some time

By Matt S |

The Capitol Market is a great option to spend a little bit of time, browsing through the goods and shopping area. There is a great coffee place within the market that also served a fantastic cup of brew. When we were there, it was still early spring, so there were no outdoor vendors; however, our assumption is that when there are the vendors during warmer weather, this is even a more attractive place to spend some time.

Great place

By WVherd82 |

This is a great place in Charleston! There are many vendor selling things right out of the garden. They also have an inside that has a variety of foods.

Gourmet food, wine, fresh local produce. My monthly go-to place!

By sherri r |

Friendly local service, knowledgeable staff. Everything you want to prepare fresh, healthy dinners, under one roof. Fresh herbs, mushrooms, carrots, and superb wine prices ad selection. Seafood, steak, chicken, lamb, chops, you name it. Prices and quality are unmatched. I tell all my friends: the meat and veg stays fresh in your fridge LONG after that you would get at nearby chain stores. It's Local, with Prideful standards that show, not from sub-standard, remote, distributors. No wonder our local chefs buy here, in bulk. For thirteen years, I've shopped for my kids and husband here, no less than once each month, because I trust what I'm getting and the faces who bring it to me.

Wonderful place to spend the afternoon!

By Debra L |

This place is great. If you are looking for flowers or fresh produce this is the place to go. There are also several options for a good place to eat or grab a cup of coffee.

Fresh, local, and homegrown

By rwj5752 |

A great farmers market but also food / meat /fish market, restaurants, and WV made wines & crafts. A nice complex with a laid back atmosphere and special events every month. Ever changing variety of products according to the season. Springtime flower selling season is especially beautiful and the vendors are pleasant and helpful.

Neat old market

By PAHumaneOfficer10 |

Cute market but nothing like where I live in Amish Country(PA) Its more of "vendors" then a "market"

Nice place to check out

By Melody42390 |

The place is a redone train depot and looks really cool. Although the outside is basically all produce, the inside had a cool coffee bar, sandwich shop, seafood and meat market, among other things. We grabbed a coffee and sandwich, both were really good. Definitely worth a pop in, if you’re in the area.

What a great place!

By Michelle C |

This place is really a gem. Makes me want to live in Charleston! The market is set up as one large warehouse with many little shops inside. I loved the uniqueness of the purple onion - you can purchase grocery items that you can't in a regular store like one of a kind jellys, spices, soup mixes, dressings, dried fruit, pasta, peanut butter and other groceries.

The sushi place was outstanding!!!! I tried the spicy mango and the dynamite rolls....sooo good I couldn't decide which I liked more!!!!

Had some homemade chocolate with gave free samples and convinced me to buy more to take home....mmmmhmm delicious!

Lots of wine to choose from though we didn't buy any and loads of other things like a meat market, fish market, glass items, homemade soap etc. You have to check this place out!!!

Farmers Market

By wake57 |

Omgoodness- what a fab place to visit and shop or find a cozy outside seat and relax with the sights of a Farmers Market
Inside you will find food, beer, wine, sushi, meat market offering organic selections, fish, fresh chocolate delights, market fruits and veggies and dried beans , spices, wv crafts, glassware and wv food products——-just to name a few of the indoor offerings.
Outdoors are local farmers with their booths filled with fresh products, micro greens, flowers and herbs, icecream by Ellen’s icecream , at times music and activities, seats to enjoy delights and relaxation, and a restaurant at one end that offers outside seating.
It is like a little city encased in this wonderful market.
A definite must see while visiting Charleston

nice market

By annette t |

The flowers and plants were abundant this week end. Inside the Hall chocolates were to die for. The raspberry truffles were my favorite. Rest rooms were clean and well stocked.

Passing through

By Ron_Sage |

Found this Market, by chance, looking for the Information Center. Who knew it was in the middle of the Market building. Looking around, it is not like a 'market' like with the big box stores....no no. The 'fresh' meats, wines, seafoods, sushi, and fruits/vegetables were just out of this persons world. Reminds me of some of the more affluent markets like up in Seattle. The Restaurant there, SOHO, was phenomenal! The atmosphere, bar, tables were just...perfect. The wait staff was off the charts informative with meal selection and wine pairings. Just a great experience, just catching this on a pass-through.

Something for everyone

By Leshia H |

If you are in Charleston, you have to go by the Capital Market. Lot of veggies, fruits and flowers outside and when you go inside the building, you can find unique foods. yummy

Great Market!

By Lula W |

This is the best place I have found for fresh fruits and vegetables. They have a very large variety to choose from. Especially in the summer when every thing is ripe. I could walk around for hours looking at the produce. And then make my way inside for a great fish sandwich and cold drink. I don't recall the name of the fish place, just let your nose guide you to it!! Great place to spend the day!!!

You Must Try Capitol Market !!!!!!!

By Melinda S |

Love this place all year round. Love the purple onion and the outdoor market Spring through Fall. I buy all my summer plants there...the best vegetables in the summer and fall...❤️❤️❤️ this place... 😊

Such a great little market!

By Sightsee200237 |

Such a great little market! We purchased several fresh fruits and vegetables and we were pleased with the quality. It has a nice atmosphere and a variety of goods. Fun to stroll through and there's even a public piano just outside by the ramp. The people are super friendly, especially at the chocolate shop. we enjoyed the dark choolate samples and the conversation about the area!

Ceean wade

By Ceean2 |

Fresh meat and seafood are the best in town! Fresh veggies and fruit in season. Flowers to plant and hanging baskets in spring and summer.

fun to shop

By smgm1952 |

I have been there a few times and my experiences have always been good. Friendly people, all kinds of beautiful flowers and vegetables. Just a great way to spend some time on a Saturday, a most see and do experience.

Prices are high here but did like the reuben at soho's

By blackriverwoman |

My mother and I stopped here for lunch and split a reuben and another sandwich at soho's. The reuben was excellent. Parking at the market is free. The place seems clean. We saw some apparent homeless people but they didn't harass us like in other parts of Charleston. You can find fresh produce, meats, wines, cheese, candy, etc. but the prices are high, so we didn't buy anything even though we could have used some fresh fruit and meat.

Really cool place!

By Gerald S |

A real step above a farmer's market, Capitol Market features locally grown produce and other products in a nice, covered, open-air setting. Free parking close by. Outdoor market is open April through Sept. but the indoor section has several year-round shops and restaurants (Fresh Seafood served an excellent crab cake sandwich on a big croissant-highly recommend!.) The chocolate shop was irresistible. We also really enjoyed the Purple Onion, a "foodies" store with a large selection of bulk foods, sauces and spices, all at decent prices. A great place to spend a couple of enjoyable hours with actual West Virginian flavor.

Great place to visit

By cryoung2 |

This market has fresh vegetables, several resteraunts and coffee shops, a cheese shop and a nicely stocked wine shop. This is in addition to the candy shops and several shops selling locally prepared a packaged speciality foods. In the summer there is a large outdoor market as well. Great place for an unrushed stroll as you look at the offerings.

Cute!! Beautiful flowers!

By lunchlandqueen |

Nice, fresh produce and gorgeous flowers at very reasonable prices. Inside market has individual shoppes ranging from delis, wines, bakery, grains, etc. something for everyone.

Great place for quality variety

By dafacct |

Depending on the season one can go to the farmers market and get everything from scrumptious garden delicacies to plants to grow in the garden. From watermelon to hydrangeas the Capitol Market is the place to go. Every season brings new items to the market and a fresh source of those things that cannot be found in the box stores. Highly recommend........for all seasons

Great place to pop in

By Jim D |

The Capitol Market always has something to see. In spring, it comes alive as the local greenhouses fill the place with spring flowers, herbs, and garden plants. Summer brings the farmers with truckloads of fresh local produce. Fall has the bountiful pumpkins and fall flowers. When the holiday greenery arrives, close your eyes and imagine your in an evergreen forest. Thats just outside, inside you can enjoy some of the finest chocolates, have a great fresh fish dinner, sushi, coffees, cheeses, shop for fine wines and craft beers. You never know who may be there. Stop and see.

Great place but price is getting out of hand!

By Dean D |

I love the Capitol Market but won’t be visiting as much. I don’t know if the rent has increased or just greed. I love to eat at the fresh fish market/sandwich shop but it is way too pricey! The plants and vegetables are getting too expensive to buy. Again, a great place but needs to kept affordable for working people!

Delightful find

By Brian S |

An attractive market in a converted rail station within walking distance of the attractions of downtown Charleston. The range of goods available was impressive, from boutique coffee and wine shops to crafts and fresh produce. Great place for people watching and photography.

Capitol Market

By sharondodson |

I love all the shops at the market. Especially the Purple Onion, Fresh seafood and Johnny's meat market

Small but Great

By bkgj8181 |

The market has a little bit of the good stuff. Fresh food, local farmers and florists. Great wines, cheese, meats and seafood. The restaurant at the end was disappointing.

Skip the Grocery Stores!

By Bryson P |

This is my favorite place in Charleston to shop.

Visit Chrissene at Johnnie's Meat Market for the best, freshly butchered meat in town.

Go see Alan at the Purple Onion for fresh produce, specialty foods and West Virginia favorites.

Check out Tony at the Seafood Market and get a Big Fish Sandwich.

Vanu and the gang at Mea Cuppa will who up the best coffee and chai drinks in town.

Holl's Chocolate... The Wine Shop... Soho's Restaurant and West Virginia glass, sauces, momentos, and a whole lot more.
This is a must for anyone living in our visiting the Kanawha Valley!

Lovely stop for lunch and fresh produce!

By Leslie553 |

We have visited this wonderful place several times on our travels and love the selections of fresh fruits, produce and eateries. Easy on/off 77-Great place to stretch your legs and have a healthy meal-plenty of options available and wonderful choices. Would definitely chose this gem over fast food any day!!!

Wonderful place to browse and find local items

By dsaxe1114 |

I enjoyed walking around the market. So many local made items. I’m enjoying local made fudge, wine and honey. A must do while in Charleston!

We stop by on each visit

By MickyO |

Every time we go to Charleston, we go to the farmer's market. The selection of fresh vegetables just wonderful. There are multiple vendors so you will be able to find what you want and pay the price you are looking to pay. There are a large variety of plants and flowers available as well. Inside, there is a great meat shop, seafood shop, local crafts for sale and more. There is enough to keep you busy for a while. Plus, the restaurant is very good for table service. We love to stop by the market to see what is in season.

Nice Place To Shop and Stroll

By WVTip |

A nice place to eat at one of the several resteraunts or food stands. Produce and meat markets to buy to take home too. Wine and beer vendor has imports and local selections. Outside tables too. Farmers market outside in summer with many vendors with fruits and veggies and plants to choose from. Within walking distance from mall and parking can get crowded on busy weekends.

Fun stop and shops

By Morgantowngirls |

Cute farmers market with multiple shops, crafts and places to eat! Worth a stop and would even be better in summer with outdoor markets!

Great market in Charleston.

By jgbtravels |

For a city this size this is a great asset to the community. My town is much larger yet doesn't have anything like this. Not only is there a restaurant inside(Soho's) there are other nice shops to buy meat, wine, foods, etc. in an attractive environment. Outside you can buy flowers, produce and now during fall you can purchase done nice pumpkins, etc. If nothing else it's a great place to browse or enjoy a beautiful day. Oh, there is free parking also.

Fish market is the greatest

By Karen S |

You have to try the big fish sandwich. It is 3-4 pieces of fish on a crescent roll. It is the greatest!!!! They also have great lemonade.

Stop here for sure

By ddallas1969 |

Cool market! Spend some time here looking around. They have a little of everything. Great produce, flowers, local items. We enjoyed our time here.

Cute spot

By Ashley R |

Very cute place, has a little bit of everything. Cool spot to walk through and check out. Got my kids some cool stuff for gifts. Nice to check out if in the area

Beautiful flowers and Great food!

By teresaaI5742YP |

The variety of flowers, vegetables and food to purchase is unbelievable! There are so many variety of flowers, it is hard to choose. There are several restaurants that serve many different foods, which is also hard to choose if you come hungry - lol. Love it!!

Love the Market!

By 153carlaa |

This is a great stop! Full of seasonal flowers, produce, unique gifts, along with sushi, seafood, meat market, coffee shop, beer and wine shops. And a nice restaurant Soho's.

Overpriced, big business not local growers

By AirForceTraveler |

At one time we had a wonderful street market that let local growers market their quality, inexpensive vegetables and fruits. Now it is a big business for big business to charge high prices for many items imported, very few items from WV. We have grown to hate this place because of the lack of WV while using our state and our city to profit when stuff isn't from our state. Over priced garbage.

Great Market With Fresh Foods, Bar B Q, and Cool Gifts

By Toni T |

This great low key market offers several outdoor garden vendors with plants, herbs, flowers, vegetable plants and beautiful tomatoes. I found a cool lawn decoration

Old Train Station - the "Capitol Market"

By VisitWV4Fun |

Capitol Market provides beauty and gourmet foods. Beauty in the flowers, veggies and fruit freshly grown in West Virginia. Beautiful people from town and country with wonderful experiences and knowledge to share. Inside shops provide a variety of selective lunch and dinner menus, plus wine and cheese as well as chocolates and fresh fruits. I always leave with a smile.

My favorite place Charleston!

By pt10000 |

This is seriously my favorite place to go in Charleston! I make sure I go there every time I'm in town! First, there are great indoor markets! Wine, beer, fish, meat, cheese, a small grocery store, west Virginia-made items! Places to eat within the Market area and Soho's restaurant! Then, in the summer months, there is the most wonderful outdoor market, filled with the most beautiful produce! Bring your coolers!!

Authentic

By TWB |

This is a fun place to spend part of a day with family, friends, or solo. The flower and produce selection in the large covered area outside was full and looking beautiful and delicious. Inside, there were a handful of shops (one with Swiss chocolate) and a restaurant, SoHo's. My travel companion said she could spend the day in one of the big wooden chairs on the sidewalk because they were so comfortable. Local and community vibes. Free parking.

growers market

By SUSAN H |

It was a bit out of the way to visit but we found it.
Outside you get all the local growers selling all kinds of fruit and vegetables.
Inside you have small shops.
The wine shop did not have any prices on the bottles.
The purple onion shop sells all types of flavoured nuts which were really nice and different.

Love this place!!!

By Anna J |

I thought the overall market provided a great amount of diversity as it relates to foods, drinks, healthy items and location. The overall experience was great and every restaurant was very tasty.

Good shopping

By klay36 |

A mixed variety of cooking supplies, fruits and veggies, wines, snacks, wv arts and crafts, food benders, etc....the outdoor market was also great, flowers looked great.

They have it all.

By TurfLion72 |

If you like to buy your food and goodies all in one place, this is it. They have seafood, beer, candies, baked goods and a craft shop. During the seasons the outside of the market changes. They sell flowers, pumpkins, trees, etc. in the outside market. This farmers market is open year round and offers plenty of options for your kitchen needs.

Excellent Food and Service

By N8TVWARRIOR |

The setting is perfect for a nice lunch. Sitting among the flowers and plants with a very casual atmosphere was refreshing. The food and service was quick and very memorable.

Lunch

By kruzinkev |

There are several places inside the market to have lunch.....All are wonderful. Our favorite is the seafood restaurant.

Great place for visitors

By AQueenB |

We stopped here on our vacation and it was a one stop shop. Local produce and plants and artisans. They even had the salt from the local salt mine. It was a fun stop.

Local shopping

By jamesag2016 |

A unique outdoor and indoor market with lots of local vegetables and plants in the outdoor market. Indoor markets offer good and other items for sale.

This is the place to get fresh foods and unique gifts.

By JamesDR1117 |

My family loves this market! We go several times a year from Fayette County. We live all the seasonal fruits and veggies. Their flowers can't be beat. They have a wide selection of about any you are looking for and all at reasonable prices. The vendors are so helpful and friendly. They usually have something unique that we just have to get. Right now they have a LOT of different pumpkins to decorate with. They have some that are really unique and you can't get anywhere else. There are other fall items now too from decorative corn, fodder shocks, gourds, and even hand made fall bows and ribbons. The WV peaches were in and I couldnt pass them up either. If you want a fantastic lunch or dinner, then thisbisbthr place for you. From a quick bite to elegant fining, its all here in one location. They have upscale foods at Soho's with multiple dishes to choose from. There is the Purple Onion marker that has fresh made to go foods. They have salads, sandwiches, wraps and other fresh made items that are always great! I never miss going here when at the market. They have frsh fruots and vegetables. They also have bulk foods. From spices, soup mixes, chocolates and candies, cocoa mixes and so much more! They also sell unique kitchen utensils and items that can't be found elsewhere. I try to always keep room for a lunch or dinner at the Fresh Seafood Company. They have fresh seafood and you can also get the best hotdog in the city. Their Big Fish sandwich is always a favorite. They have other dinners like flounder and crab cake dinners. This isn't all but there are a lot of choices. You can also purchase some fresh seafood to take home and cook. If you have any questions about how to prepare it then just ask the nice folks there and they are more than pleased to give ya their years of knowledge for making it here at yourself. There is also a Holl's Chocolatier inside. Great Vienna, WV made chocolatss. Multiple choices and various boxes to enjoy. The Sushi Garden makes bankrolled fresh sushi while you are there. It's a great lunch and take some home for later. Its so good. If you want fresh cut meat or poultry then Johnnies Fresh Meat is the place to get it. Hand cut meats hand cut to order. If you are looking for a unique gift or WV item then The Market place is where to get it. They have WV made salsa, jellies, and other tasty WV made items. They have WV made Blenko glass items, WV books and great basket making items to give for a birthday or Christmas. Make sure you drop by because this is a great time of year to visit for fall items and Christmas is a great time at the market.

I miss the original market

By LadyRedRider |

This is just an overpriced mess. Just another business. I loved the original market under the bridge where I could get fresh produce from local farmers without the government causing jacked up prices and big businesses taking the space. I miss the "local" feel and the people that once sold local goods. I have tried several times, including recently, to shop here but just found it a mess of uppity ups and over priced stuff. Just a big city feel and snooty atmosphere.

By Holly2185 |

Small tucked away, you could miss it if you did not know about it. It is a nice ridden gem in the city, fresh coffee, sandwiches, salads, bulk nuts, snacks. And a beautiful outdoor market with tons of flowers.

Lunch

By Kat B |

I love the Capitol Market - you can find almost everything you could ever want in plants, trees, and fresh vegetables. Fine dining to simple open air lunch dining. Specialty coffee shops, to fine Wine stores and everything in between. A very nice place to visit & shop.

Great selection of everything!

By svc782018 |

Excellent Market with a variety of selections. Soho’s is one of Charleston’s best restaurants. The Purple Onion has a wide selection of fresh produce, delicious salads and desserts, and numerous other unique food choices. The outdoor market offers a huge selection of flowers, plants and produce. The Wine Shop and Holl’s Chocolates offer great selections!

By infojunkie00 |

We love to go here in the summer and buy fresh produce and flowers. If you go, it is good to browse a bit before buying, because the prices can vary quite a bit between stalls. I also like the Purple onion, good prices on organic food and has items hard to find elsewhere.

Perfection!

By Morris N |

Have been here before, last time was a different time of year, late summer I think. Then it was overflowing with a dazzling array of fresh produce. This time it was early Spring and it had an outstanding selection of plants and flowers. Will go there again, that’s for sure!

Nice little market lots of interesting things

By Kevin L |

We usually go to the FM in Milton. This on is not as big but a very nice one. Lots of interesting things. Some indoors and out.

Restrooms are clean and people are friendly.

lots of vegetables, beautiful flowers, great indoor shops

By Marsha B |

I loved everything! The parking was easy, the location was easy to find..people so nice. If you visit you need to try SOHO's restaurant located right there. Wow so good. They have someone playing music every Saturday and it was very good as well! Chris Reese was unbelievable.

Boring

By Tisha B |

I saw great reviews so I told my friend we should go. We've been to farmers markets in Ohio and Michigan and this was the worst. Not much there and way too expensive. $10 for a small seedless 🍉!

Must Visit

By torrethetourist |

This is a must visit for anyone coming to Charleston. The Capitol Market is full of local food and local vendors. They also have a great outdoor section where they sell seasonal plants and vegetables.

None compare

By delfordc |

I have shopped farmers markets in cities all over the Eastern United States. NONE compare to Capital Market. Nashville has a nice building but not much in it. Others have barely enough room for farmers to park their pickup trucks and sell from them. Capital Market is in a class all by itself.

Great Place to Eat and Shop

By Dee S |

This is an amazing attraction in my home town. You can purchase almost everything you need. It offers an outdoor farmers market, and indoor shopping from unique produce items at the Purple Onion, wonderful gifts at the West Virginia Shop, fresh meats at Johnnie’s Meat Market, and you can even have lunch at a few of the local restaurants inside the Market.
A must see and visit fir everyone who comes to the city.

A Little Bit of Everything

By WVKim |

This is my go to place to buy presents for out of town friends and associates to give them a piece of West Virginia. The West Virginia Store, the Wine Shop and Holl's Chocolates all offer great gift options. Plus while I'm shopping I can treat myself to coffee at Mea Cuppa.

Contemptuous

By Joe G |

The outside market is filled with genuine, hard working people selling great produce at incredible prices.

The inside is filled with pompous, over inflated businesses who are disingenuous and over priced.

Worth a stop when you're in Charleston, WV

By WVMountaineerinIL |

Be sure & buy some Holl's chocolate when you are there - delicious! There is a fairly large wine store that has some West Virginia wine. The flowers at the market are beautiful!

Lots of fresh products!

By mustafina |

It is not of that big of an area but it does have all the necessities you are willing to purchase. You can find all sorts of vegetables and fruits outside in the tented area. Coffeeshops, a supermarket , a florist and a butchery all serve you up to your standards..

Beautiful Shots

By Rekko P |

Spring is in the air, along with the sweet smell of flowers. Mother's Day is a good time, but shouldn't be the only time to buy her flowers. She gave you life!! Pick up some WV Holl's Chocolate and a bottle of wine, from the Wine Shop. Soho's is the best place to sit at the bar, have a drink, and wait while the flower shopper in your life looks and looks, looks at all this beautiful flowers to choose from. Tell Joey and or Travis, Rekko sent you!!! Love those guys!

Fun place to visit

By Sheila N |

I decide to walk from my hotel to the Capitol Market. Just few blocks and I really loved. Nice fresh produce, a really good honey from the mountain state, a West Virginia Maple Syrup and few biscuits for my dogs. Kind of expensive but is good stuff. I noticed was a free parking very close. On my way back to the hotel I discovery this bakery, name; Charleston Bread on the 601 Capitol St.The pastries, breads, croissants, was out of this world! I will go back to those 2 places every time I go to Charleston.

Great Place to Stretch Your Legs

By Mary Jane T |

Right off I-77 and exit 100, this is a good place to stop and stretch as well as get a bite to eat. There is an array of items from bulk foods, fresh produce, garden items, kitchen items, beer, wine, seafood and WV souvenirs.

Charming open air market

By Luke R |

Nice place that the whole town seems to love. Delicious west Virginia apples in the fall. Kind of crowded and kind of bad walk there. Sketchy area around it though

Visitor information center

By Curiosity24402635444 |

We stopped by here to visit the visitor information centre. The help we recieved, tips, advice and plans were fantastic! Great advice and help and the market was also great.

Brunch at Sohos

By Kristen R |

Always enjoy this place. I enjoy walking around outside looking at the flowers. We ate brunch at Sohos. I had the frittata. It was really good. The staff was pleasant. The prices were reasonable. It was not crowded.

Produce and Flower Shopping

By alytay |

The Capitol Market offers a wide variety of fresh produce in season from local farmers. A great selection of fish, wine, cheese and specialty items featured in our state.

Nice & clean.

By Shelia D S |

The finest meat in the Charleston area. I buy the meat package & it is always fresh! I love the thick cut steaks & the staff is always so nice and courteous. This family business has been around for a very long time.

Nice market

By Jesse E |

We visited the market on a weekday when there weren't a lot of vendors outside. It was still very nice. My wife bought a nice plant at a great price. Inside was very nice and handicapped accessible. Prices were a little steep but the selection was great. We got a nice bottle of local wine and some jam. There is a restaurant, a meat and cheese market and several local vendors inside. Very good overall experience.

Spend your time outside

By LAURIE S |

We found the outside stalls more reasonable and less frou-frou than their inside counterparts. Sealed alcoholic beverages cannot be consumed on site. There are western bathrooms available. There is something from everyone at this market underneath highway overpasses.

A fun place to walk & browse

By Monello99z |

Stopped to see the Capitol Market. Was able to find close parking right in their lot. Walked around and saw the sights. Various food and items for sale. There is a tourist kiosk for visitors inside. The gal manning the desk was very helpful. I got some tarallis which are a hard to find item in most stores.

Wow! Great market!

By scubabob50 |

After visiting Taylor Books, we walked over to Capitol Market. This is a very cool place to shop for foods and is unlike any other we have seen. It is located at a former train station. The old platforms shelter local produce sellers, while indoors there are several small prepared food sellers. At the end there is Soho's which is a really nice restaurant. We only stopped in and had some wine, but were liked the selections offered as well as the service.

great place to visit and look around

By dalefromohio |

Lots of indoor shops and even more outside. Pretty much all food oriented. We enjoyed looking at all the many offerings. The wine shop had a very large selection, including some beers. Lots of fresh fruit, vegetables and other things outside.

Quaint and friendly market

By Debi G |

Find unique gifts, food items, and be greeted happily by the people who work there. I found some Amish popcorn that is very good.

Whenever I'm in the area.

By Leigh Ann O |

Whenever I'm in the area I make sure to visit. Yesterday I stocked up on produce and meat. They have high quality products at reasonable prices. There is also a wine and cheese shop. In the spring I will stop to pick up my flower and vegetable plants. In the fall there are pumpkins and other decor. I've also bought holiday wreaths and even gifts there. Easy access from interstate.

Awesome place to go grocery shopping

By Jackie_0913 |

This place was huge compare to most farmers markets. Also their ice cream was amazing, the ice cream outside in the farmers market area I didn't try the one inside the market.

Very nice

By menbx5 |

Great little market.
When we visited in May, there were many outdoor stands set up and it was wonderful to wander and look at the amazing selection.
I feel that the outdoor selection is far greater than the shops that are set up inside of the Market.

Great Place for Local Produce and Meat

By atukaj |

Was a great place to stop and get some local peaches, melons, and sweet corn and the meat shop even had venison and duck in addition to the grass fed beef.

Great place to visit!

By Bluejava1968 |

I love visiting the Capitol Market when in Charleston. I frequently visit the Purple Onion for their delious salads; my favorite is the chicken salad, its the best I've ever tasted! They also have fresh produce, homemade desserts and a large variety of salads. Additionally I love Fresh Seafood; their seafood platter is delicious and very reasonably priced. They even have fresh seafood you can take home to prepare. The Wine Mart has fabulous wines. It's usually the only place I can find my favorite red blend 1443. Additionally, you can find WV made products and Soho restaurant that has wonderful food and wine. Be sure to try the minestrone soup and the grilled eggplant open faced sandwich; yum!

Lots to see

By travelteacher4 |

We walked through the market which has an outside and an inside. On the outside there were multiple booths with fresh fruits and vegetables and other booths with plants , flowers and fresh herbs. Inside there were areas with meats, seafood, wines, specialty foods and crafts.

Capitol Market is open with social distancing.

By West Laurel |

When we visited in July, 2020, we were glad to see that Capitol Market in Charleston WV is open with social distancing. We visit at least once every time we're in town. (And sometimes more than once, for coffee in the morning at Mea Cuppa and dinner at Soho's in the evening.)

I like to check out the West Virginia shop, with local books, Blenko hand-blown glass, and local foods.

The Market, at the end of Capitol Street, is in an and around an old railroad freight warehouse. Outside are farmers markets, selling food and flowers. Inside are shops, restaurants, and a grocery store.

Love the market on any season!

By Cyndi A |

The Capitol Market is a true gem in Charleston. We are so lucky to have fresh farm vegetables, a traditional butcher, a sushi shop, Holls chocolates, a seafood stand, the wine shoppe and SoHos restaurant all under one roof— and the flowers Spring through summer are gorgeous, and winter brings evergreens in all forms!! Don’t miss visiting here if you are in Charleston!

Great Little Market

By David G |

If you have some spare time in Charleston, I would recommend a visit to the Capitol Market where you will be able to pick up some local produce, meats and products or to just a have a good meal. There are several vendors offering everything from great sandwiches to sushi to Italian which will not disappoint.

Nice day

Wish there were more places like this in our area. It's beautiful to see all the veggies and fruit. Love to by locally ❤️ great friendly people. I enjoy the inside also!

Shopping Really Can Be Fun

By Kenneth M |

It's amazing. Such a variety under one roof. The variety & quality of food items there is top notch. This place is really worth the trip to check it out all 4 seasons of the year. They have ample parking but the place is so popular, don't be surprised if you have to spend a little time hunting a parking spaced. Everyone I ever encountered working there was pleasant.

VERY CLEAN LOCAL MARKET

By SUNILDASWANEY |

Very clean, tidy, well stocked and very well stocked local market with a very good variety of local produce and merchandise. However
prices were a bit pricey.

Capital Market. -

Spring is coming to Charleston and the capital market will be full of bedding plants for gardens and annuals for containers. Herbs will go into gardens and color will return to window boxes. Local farmers will begin to sell lettuce and small bushes for early planting. Great place to go on a weekend. Get there early for the best selection and a parking place.

Anything you need

Great community market supporting local. We spent a couple hours on a Saturday morning when in Charleston for a girls trip and found chocolate, wine and coffee to take home. We will definitely visit again when in Charleston!

A fun place to walk around and browse. If you like collecting local finds during your travels, this is a great place to go!

By Chelsie H |

I have never really bought much here to date, but it is a very cool place to visit. It's nice to have a local market with fresh produce, and the locals that work here are so pleasant and patient. I never felt any pressure to make a purchase.

A Great Place to Visit

By GinaWestVirginia |

The Capital Market is a wonderful year round Farmer's Market with flowers in the spring, fresh produce in the summer, pumpkins and squash in the fall and Christmas trees and wreaths in the winter. Most cities have a Saturday Market. Charleston WV has a 7 day a week Farmer’s Market. The local farmers bring wonderful produce, plants, trees, fruit, honey, etc. There is a great Italian restuarant with outdoor seating to enjoy the flowers. There is a wonderful fresh meat market and fish market. Local West Virginia arts and crafts are sold there as well as an excellent wine and cheese store is there. West Virginia chocolates are sold there as well as a great coffee shop is on site. Finally there is an indoor produce store that sells farm fresh milk and eggs and cheese as well as regional pasta and bulk nuts and beans and various jams and sauces. It is my favorite place to go and just chill out for a few hours. I have been to many large city farmers markets and most do not compare in terms of atmosphere. You just need to experience it yourself.

Worth a stop

By Kim A |

Stopped in here originally to visit the Visitors Center which turned out to be a bust - media driven kiosk. Not many brochures. No one to answer questions.

But, we did take time to walk through the market inside and out. Lots of lovely gourmet foods for foodies. Outside, plants for every garden. Both vegetables and flowers.

Spend your time here browsing and feeling the vibe of Charleston, WV

By SusanTalib |

We stop here often to get some fresh meat from Johnny's Meat market.. We also like to stop by the Purple Onion for some fruits and veggies. During the warmer seasons we love to buy the white peaches from the farmers. Yummy! In the Spring you can buy any type of flower, tree, or plant for your garden. Summer they have fresh fruits and veggies being sold by farmers and in the Fall you will find 100's of pumpkins, squash, mums and fall flowers. November and December you can buy any type of fresh Christmas tree!

Enjoyed seeing the Capitol Market both inside and out; the inside is located in an old train station with a fish market, meat market, wine store, crafts and fresh produce plus restaurants. The outside stalls are just beautiful all year round with glorious fruits and vegetables, mums in the fall and Christmas trees and wreaths in December. Definitely worth a trip; we couldn't resist buying way too much stuff!

Love this place! Johnny’s meat market, Purple Onion, great food. Local vendors selling unique items throughout .

Popular Stop For Tourists And Locals Alike Offers Wide Variety, Free Wi.Fi, Visitor Center Inside Too

By MariefromGeorgia |

My Goodness at the various items and shops found in this one place. I wanted to pick up some fresh tomatoes and onions for a dish I was preparing for my girlfriend and she took me here. Upon pulling into the parking lot and going thru the gate, I noticed fresh fruits, pumpkins, and beautiful fall mums outside. Then I heard a man playing a piano outside the indoor shops. We went into the market and I saw a Visitor's Center inside, butcher shop, chocolates, a wine & cheese area, fish market, and the very thing I was looking for....a place that sold Blenko glass items. My friend extolled the virtues of fine glass and she said that she only owns a few choice pieces of Blenko. That the one souvenir I should remember WVA for should be a piece of Blenko glass and I found the most adorable little turtle that is now home safely with me in Georgia. The smell from the Italian restaurant had my mouth watering and my stomach grumbling! There were numerous places to eat and small bistro type tables and chairs to sit and enjoy a bite while using the free Wi.Fi. This market is a great little place to shop outside or inside and the smells are so varied but I zeroed in on the Italian place! Soon it was time to gather our onions and tomatoes and other goodies and get back to her house so I could prepare a special meal for my dear old friend that I had not seen in over 10 years. I must do this again sooner!

Small market, worth a visit

By CovingtonCat |

Inside you'll find several vendors selling a variety of mostly local goods. The Purple Onion sells dry beans and a variety of jarred items, including some from Amish Country and Cape Cod. There's a meat market which also sells sandwiches, a small seafood market where you can also get prepared meals and sandwiches, a wine shop with a good selection, a chocolate shop, and a vendor selling all things West Virginia, including items from one of WV's best glass factories. There's also a restaurant at the far end. You can pick up brochures at the visitor's center that will give you good ideas for things to do during your visit to the area. Outside, the space is taken up by many local garden centers/nurseries. I wish this was near me. It would've saved a lot time when I was planning my garden this spring. One-stop shopping for plants and flowers. Parking is free but during busy times you may have to wait for a spot. Don't be discouraged if there appears to be a line of cars waiting. Just turn the other direction to access parking a little farther back.

great place to visit, great place to shop

By Stephanie253 |

Because I live in Charleston it's a little difficult to evaluate the Capitol Market from a visitor's perspective, but if you're just dropping in to see what's what, there are 4 places to grab quick and well made eats (deli sandwiches, sushi, fried fish dinners, salads). There is also a coffee shop, which is second to none with friendly service and a shop selling Holl's chocolates, made here in WV. If you plan on an extended visit there is also a wine and cheese shop, a gift shop with WV made products, a meat market selling superior quality beef/chicken/pork products, a restaurant and indoor produce market. It is hard to over state the pleasure of strolling among the outside vendors selling plants, fruits/veggies and locally made ice cream. As a local I shop here often and could not be more pleased that my small city has a place like this.
(If you're willing to walk an extra block or so, the Charleston Bread Company is located on Capitol Street, a short walking distance away. If you love bread, you will not regret making the trip).

Sweet market, worth a visit

By helloMs |

After spending the night in Charleston to break up a long drive, the Capitol Market was the perfect morning stopover for a tasty cup of coffee and healthy provisions for breakfast and lunch. Though December meant reduced offerings, the venders were well-stocked and I found quality chocolate (relatively inexpensive) and half-price handmade Christmas cards for next year. Friendly folks made the visit fun, and they are proud of this attractive market built in what used to be a railway loading platform. The experience recommended Charleston as a whole, a scrappy city that honors its roots as it innovates; I spent more time in the city than intended and found myself cheering them on.

Enjoyable but I guess I was expecting a bit more...

By Danielle M |

I'll lead with this admission: I'm from Cincinnati where we have the fantastic Findlay Market, so by comparison, I was a bit disappointed in this place. However... I will say the produce I bought was fresh and the market atmosphere itself was clean, safe and enjoyable. Met some very friendly people, others not so much. I wish I had the name of the lady who was so rude to my pleasant friend, she may never agree to return.

Quaint

By shd499 |

The chocolate store inside is delicious. Lots of food and wine to choose from. Love this place! and farmers market outside.

Cute little market to walk around

By OurDogLucy |

Visiting Charleston for about two days and needed a few things to keep us busy. This little market was great, especially if you live in Charleston or are planning to stay a little longer. They had nice produce, an AMAZING selection of wine, and some fabulous plants. I hear the ice cream is phenomenal as well!

Cute stop!

By Katrina H |

Stopped here for lunch before going to the airport and got some local souvenirs. Great selection of plants, produce, and food!

What a fun couple of hours!

By jg2rd |

Take your time and talk to the locals. They are funny and very knowledgable. The coffee guy is a kick! The locals items all from WV is great for tourists. Get lunch here... Seafood, sandwiches... Then go outside and see all of the local plants and produce. The corn lady will let u try her corn and tell you about it, raw corn? Who knew! Ice cream is also available. Worthy stop!!!

Nice little market

By devinh513 |

Good variety of vendors all of whom were very nice and helpful. My wife and I got soft shell crab sandwiches from a seafood vendor that were very good.

By CharlotteBuckeye |

Lovely market located just of I-77. Great little wine shop, fresh produce stalls, and a neat historical book stall. Super clean environment. Wonderful restaurant on site -- Soho's. Prices range from $15-23 per plate at dinner. They had live jazz the night we were there. An eclectic mix of patrons -- to those in Crocs and shorts to a more dressy crowd.

Visited here last Saturday

By Schizodoc |

You really have to watch the prices-some of the produce could be purchased at Kroger for less. Did get some super sweet corn and fresh peaches. Almost every vendor that we talked to seemed rude and not interested in helping us. Only visited the outside booths-not in the building.

Foodie Heaven

By Dawn M |

Small but terrific!

I search out locally produced cooking ingredients wherever I go. This marketplace had an amazing selection of unique foods - blue cornmeal, red cornmeal... They offered local honey, jams and mixes for all kinds of things.

My favorite vendor was Purple Onion, the one offering spices. I picked up impossible to find Ceylon cinnamon and the other rare 4.5% oil cinnamon - $2 and $1.54 for a generous supply.

Inside, pick up lunch or packaged foods. Outside, choose fresh produce (cheap!).

Everyone is friendly and helpful. Parking is free and plentiful.

I got home and kicked myself that I didn't buy more.

Charming Downtown Marketplace

By Catherine W |

Love going to the Capitol Market when in Charleston WV. A variety of vendors and market items as well as a couple of great eateries make this a great place to while away some time in the city and pick up something you'll love. And it has a wonderful atmosphere and vibe. It can be hot in the summer so go early to beat the heat. Walk through their wide offering of live plants and have a crab cake sandwich at the little seafood eatery! They also offer fresh produce and foods, wine, chocolates and books. Recommend visiting! Enjoyable!

Enjoyed

This place has flower and food. We enjoyed going in and looking around. We found it interesting to see all these markets in one spot. We would love to have something like this in our city

great local stop

Loved the choices. The fresh food to choose from along with the choices to eat. Had a great variety of spices and snacks. The chocolate store was exquisite. The seafood market had a great selection and the fresh meat market had plenty to choose from. Everything was packaged nicely and is a great stop for anyone local or not.

We always try to get to the Capitol Market when in town, everything is fresh both inside at the year round shops and outside with the local produce vendors.
This weekend they were painting pumpkins with the local kids, the Charleston bike patrol was there with nike helmets for the kids it was great to see everyone out and about.

Don’t miss this!

Large produce and food market

By Keep Life Simple Allan |

The Capital Market in Charleston WV is a nice market. It is mostly produce and food items with a restaurant sohos on the far end. It is open air and inside vendors stop in what looks like a old train station. There is even a wine shop.

Nice Market

By David K |

Free parking on both sides. There is an outdoor market where you can buy spring plants for you garden, different produce, pumpkins/gourds, Christmas trees, all depending on the season. There is a nice bottle shop for beer and wine, nice coffee shop, Swiss chocolatier, nice butcher, and on one end nice Italian restaurant (Sohos) for dinner, or The Fresh Seafood place for a big fish sandwich for lunch. There are other stores with WV products and other specialty items.

A Must Stop

By WildWonderfulWander |

There is something for everyone here. Grab fresh organic produce inside and out. The Purple Onion is great year round for groceries, but during the summer you can get local produce from the farm that come to sale what they've grown. In the Winter, they have Christmas trees, and in the spring they have flowers, seeds, and plants from the local farms. The WIne Shop is where I go when I want something I know I can't find anywhere else. They will give recommendations if you don't have any idea what you are looking for. Get some food at The Fresh Seafood Co or Johnnies Meat Market. Both have delicious menus as well as seafood and meat that are better than any other in Charleston. You can buy WV made items in the market place. Just go and admire all the Blenko glass they have. Grab some Coffee or Chocolates. Whatever you need they will have it hear. Check their webpage and Facebook page for events. There is always something going on. It is worth a stop. The only negative thing I can say about the Capitol Market is the hours of operation. They close at six PM on the weekdays. This makes it hard for someone who doesn't live in Charleston to make a trip there after work. Regardless, stop by.

Shopping with the locals

By Carina Z |

Not a bad little market complete with produce, meats, seafood, spices, wine and eateries. Clean and organized. Staff are friendly and helpful. Place does take cards as well as cash.

Great spot!

By Annie H |

I love Capitol Market! I buy a lot of fresh produce from the farms outside in the summer and fall. This year I got some herbs for my garden from the "Grown in Roane" booth that were INCREDIBLE when I got them home and planted. Inside, there are shopping options for meat, seafood, produce, chocolates, a coffee shop, and WV-made items, as well as a sushi counter, SoHo's restaurant, and a wine and beer shop with a cheese case.

I have visited every vendor at Capitol Market and haven't had a bad experience. The Purple Onion is one of my favorite places to buy spices, lentils, and beans.

Great place to stop

By MSgt-G |

A great market, in and out doors and a great variety of different eateries! A nice destination. It's worth a stop on your way through Charleston.

Easy in and out

By mon m. |

I went on a Sunday afternoon and there were not to many outside vendors. I did get some really good produce at a couple of them. I especially liked the Gritts farm stand from Midway. I felt that the inside venders were a bit expensive as I seem to get better deals in my local markets. It was nice to walk around a bit and I did like the ease of parking.

Worth the Visit

By WVWire |

Was presenting at a Conference recently in Charleston and took 3 friends to the Capitol Market. The market has a large indoor area including meats, wines, cheese, vegetables, salsa's and much more. Outside is the traditional farmer market with plants, vegetables, trees and more. Look for the exotic plants! We bought an African mask and was very intrigued with a plant that has balloon shaped petals with a lid. Insects crawl in the plant and it fills up with water and the lid closes and the plant drowns the insect then eats it! Worth the Trip to Capitol Market!

awesome fresh fruit veggies and wine

By Judith R |

You can purchase fresh fruit and veggies and get a salad to go at purple onion. wine, unique gifts and more. SoHo's restaurant has an awesome lasagna and other great dishes. I always go there each year for my flowers. Also the big king fish sandwich is my favorite and Holl's chocolates are to die for.

Wonderful market to browse

By Sassy-girls |

I usually hit the market once a week. I love the products you can find. They have the Purple Onion market, visitor center, meat market, sushi bar, chocolatier, coffee bar, wine and craft beer section and fresh sandwiches. They also sell jams, jellies, decorative ware, salts and other goodies. The outside sells seasonal produce, flowers, plants and assorted other things like ice cream from Ellen's.

If you love the atmosphere of an open market, then this is the place. I stop first for a coffee then browse the inside and out. No doubt, I'll be there this weekend checking out all it has to offer.

Small Well Stocked Market

By wetravelalot007 |

We wandered this place for about an hour on our recent trip to Charleston. We purchased some decorative pumpkins and gourds. The market had a great selections of fruits, vegetables and plants for sale at great prices. We also wandered the inside section of the market as well. There were a couple of interesting stalls that caught our eye and we lingered at... This place is more for the locals than geared for tourists. But we were content to spend some time here.

this is a great place

delightful place to visit and find local treasures

By Kimka7 |

No matter the season, this quaint market is one of Charleston's finest places to visit. Outside, you can find fresh flowers, plants and produce in season from many local vendors. Inside, you'll find delicious food at the SoHo restaurant along with several local shops with locally-made wines, cheeses, fresh meat, seafood, books, West Virginia souvenirs and some of the finest chocolate you will ever eat (Holls). The Purple Onion is the perfect place to find fresh, reasonably-priced produce and other interesting food items.

By Cindy A |

We spent a couple days in Beautiful Charleston, WV. It was suggested to visit the Capital Market. For fresh produce, the selection with outdoor vendors was outstanding! We bought produce and beautiful plants. Inside we enjoyed the fresh seafood. The specialty items from the Purple Onion were fabulous. We really enjoyed our visit to the market!

Don't miss if in the area

By SoCalFoodie_2B |

Love this market with both indoor and outdoor places for vendors. Truly has something for everyone. This time of year was just indoor but still great mix of fresh produce and fruits. Generous assortment of Appalachian foods mixed with other vendors, nice wine assortment, some local craft beers (for take home only). Meat market section had great prices; sushi chef had beautifully tasty rolls; cheese vendor offered fun suggestions, and more. Recommend this stop for true taste of West Virginia as well as gifts.

Smaller than I expected

By ownedby4cats |

This was more like a farmers market, there was a lot of great produce and plants from the outside venders. The inside vendors included wines and chocolate (gave a free sample - supper yummy) I was expecting to spend hours poking around and we saw everything within an hour. It's worth a visit, but it won't take all day to see everything.

I enjoyed browsing but was kind of pricey!!!

By rmaxey |

I was able to find a great parking spot, but I think I expected it to be more than it was, but overall it was a cool little place to visit.

I found few veggies but an explosive market of West Virginia flowers. There were many eager folks who had their arms and buggies full! What a good Saturday at the Farmers Market in Charleston!

Okay

By Katibug53 |

We felt as a visitor & traveling, this was a waste of our time however for people living in the area this would be a great farmers market. Sine we couldn't take plants or food with us n the road it really wasn't what we expected. The store & market everything seemed to be very expensive.

Variety and Choices Abound

By Rob P |

I've not been disappointed dining in any of the places in this Market. Wish I could take home more of the Farmer's Market "stuff". I would rate this as a must stop place if in the area. Glad it is within walking distance of my work location.

By Jack j |

When your in Charleston don't miss the Capitol Market. Plan to enjoy lunch as the food at the vendors is marvelous! Also the produce outside was wonderful when we were their in early july so plan to stock up.

A great place to visit and shop!

By fpalmer321 |

When the fresh veggies are coming in from all over the state, this is the place to go! Not only are you supporting local growers, but you get the freshest veggies - better than the grocery stores. If you want to eat healthy, shop here. The stores inside are open year-round, featuring many WV products.

Great Produce, Grocery, Restaurants

We were in Charleston for the Mountain Food Tour( will review this when we are done!), so we had the day to look and see! We went to Capitol Market to shop and look! It was such a place to look and see fall! Pumpkins, mums, gourds were everywhere! All the veggies that were there made me want to gather them up and go cook! There is an Italian restaurant there, but we got sandwiches! I got the cheesy blt!! YUMMM! My husband got the Italian!! Very good sandwiches and we do d buy some things for snacking at our cabin later! It's a good place to stop, whether you just sight see, buy or eat!!!

Such a wonderful quant market tucked away under the interstate. I've gone to other markets like this across the country and this one by far just has that simple charm. If you're in the Charleston area for whatever reason make capital market a visit on your list.

a good place for locallly sourced foods.

By Janet Z |

good place for locally sourced food, particular during the summer. They have a decent wine shop, coffee shop, There is a quality meat shop there, where you can also get lunch. You can pick up WV gifts there.

Wander for less than an hour

By ceceliainDC |

Fun way to spend the afternoon and find some local produce or canned fruits, jams. They also have a shop devoted to beer and wine. But there weren't many options for grabbing a meal.

Charming

By RialbTraveler |

I have some extra time before my flight in Charleston and decided to see some of the local flavors. This is a charming local open air market. You name it they probably have it. My only regret is that I wasn’t allowed to buy a bunch of stuff to take on my flight back home. Their are fresh fruits and veggies of all varieties. Beautiful selection of plants and flowers. The shops inside are charming as well. If you’re visiting or if you live near by make it a point to stop by.

Always a Great Visit

By mark s |

In the old train station, markets that are from some of the best chocolate to local art and sauces, jams, honey, etc. Stroll all year long and then when the weather is warm hit the outside market. A must visit.

Worth Checking Out

By Jason G |

If you’re just perusing you won’t need very long here as it isn’t as big of a market as you’ll find in larger cities. However, there are definitely some nice local products to be found here, so if you’re looking for some local things to take home, give yourself a little more time to look around. In terms of dining, we only ate at Bogey’s which had tasty meats, but average sides. Plenty of free on-site and convenient parking, so it’s easy to visit which I would definitely recommend doing as part of your Charleston itinerary.

Local feel and great company

Great place to get home grown produce along with support the local community!! It has an outdoor and indoor section that is great if you enjoy a cozy feel! It's in the middle of the city but does not feel that way! It was my first time and I would go again!

Quaint and Upscale, But Mainly For Locals, Not Tourists

By Carol H |

Located beneath an elevated roadway at the north end of Capitol Street, this rehabilitated former Kanawha and Michigan Railroad depot is touted as one of Charleston's most appealing shops. It's offerings include beautifully displayed fresh produce, chocolate's, wine, flowers and cheeses.

While I rate it Very Good because it is quaint and upscale, and offers a few moments of diversion, most tourists, such as my spouse and I, can only look. After all, what would we do with our purchases in a hotel room?

Nice quick visit and grad a lunch

By Aurora09 |

It’s a nice market, not very big, but there is fresh produce, flowers, and specialty food. There is also a seafood market, meat market, and a Italian Restaurant. We got lunch here from both the seafood and meat market. The fish and the meat were both good. Nice place to spend an hour or so.

Love this place

We go here throughout the year but this is my favorite time to go. It is a fantastic place to get wonderful, unusual Christmas gifts. Anything from food products to wine to woodwork crafts. Highly recommend a stop here anytime of the year!

Great Farmers' Market

Lots of fresh produce and Fall decorations at very reasonable prices. I was hoping for more WV craft and artisans.

Very nice market!!

A fun time at Capital Market!! My wife enjoyed the quaint Capital Market in Charleston WV - make sure you check out Halls Chocolates for a free sample - you will love it!!

Wish I lived there

By Mark J |

This was a great farmers market and gourmet food and wine market. It was fun to walk thru and everything looked delicious but I was staying in a hotel so I didn't need these items. We did eat at the Soho restaurant which was delicious.

Nice for lunch

By Heather C |

Nice place to eat and shop lunch crowd goes around noon so eat early or around 1 for parking and dinning. Weekends may be less crowded but the Market has a nice fish place and sandwich shop that also has great hot dogs. I enjoy Soho's for more of a upscale lunch or dinner. Outdoor seating and indoor. Indoor shops have WV crafts and foods along with Holl's chocolates and produce. Outside booths are seasonal beautiful flowers and produce and fall months offer mums, pumpkins and winter pick out a fresh cut Christmas tree or wreath. They have sleigh rides in the winter. I love capitol market a A+ stop just inside Charleston.

A must visit in Charleston

By lillylewis |

This market has so many offerings including outdoor local fruit and vegetable vendors and indoor local products as well as a butcher shop, coffee shop, wine shop, restaurants and year round produce. Take time to enjoy it all.

Nice Market & Vendors

By RD_Ohio |

This market is full of vendors selling wine, meat, chocolates, vegetables, breads, and plants. Beautifully laid out and a great thing to experience. We stopped back before leaving to pick up produce.

Very Nice City Market!

By James D |

If you are staying for a few days in Charleston, the Capital Market is worth a visit. They have wonderful fresh fruits & vegetables outside & multiple vendors inside with fresh meat & seafood. They are open 7 days a week.

Don't Forget to Shop Inside!

By TSKWVU70 |

I have been a fan of the Capitol Market since it opened and each year it's just a little different than it had been the year before but in many ways it's stayed the same!

As much as I enjoy the seasonal shopping outside (flowers in the spring, produce and fruit in the summer, pumpkins in the fall and trees for Christmas), the inside shops are open year round.

You can get one of the best hot dogs in Charleston at the Fish Restaurant, sample some of the best handmade chocolate in the world, and always find good produce and other kitchen items (I just stumbled onto bulk popcorn with 4 varieties available.

IF the restrooms were more centrally located inside (heaven help you if it's an emergency because they are far in the back of the building) I would give them 5 rating...so the architect doomed them to no better than a 4 in my book...if you are more forgiving, you will find that it really is a nice place to shop, inside and out.

A Must Visit in Charleston

By kendellbrink |

Recommended by our concierge at the Marriott lounge, this is a great opportunity to enjoy the sites, crafts, and tastes of WV. The vegetable, flowers, and seasonal pumpkins were beautiful. Inside we visited the wine shop, chocolatier, and grocery….time was limited but looking forward to our next visit to the area.

Hidden Gem

By Mike K |

A must stop for a Capital City visit. Both an open air and enclosed market offering true West Virginia made products.

An excellent restaurant is available for lunch

Allow 60-90 minutes for a visit. Parking is available

Disappointment

By Northcountrychick |

Not really a market! An art display by local artist and very overpriced.... We were there years ago and loved it, but it has changed.... Do not look for food there....

Charming shopping venue in the middle of the city!

By MidwestKathM |

Visiting Charleston WV for the day while on a longer roadtrip. In search of lunch, we stopped by the Capitol Market. While there is a restaurant in the Market, and the option to carry out some ready-made sandwiches and other dishes, we didn't find anything that met our needs at the moment. Still, I could see being a customer of the Market, if I lived in the area. Shopping for produce, meat and seafood, wine, gourmet items, gifts, and such at the Market would be a regular event! Free parking onsite. And open air market for the summer!

By Awaywithyou |

Beautiful flowers, plants, vegetables, fruits for sale at reasonable prices. One of the cleanest farmers markets we have ever shopped! Plenty of options for prepared meals too! Well worth your time!

Great Market Place All Year Long

By Earl S |

Capitol Market is a fun and interesting place to shop and dine all year round. A fish market/restaurant is available inside which has excellent quality seafood. There are shops selling books and local WV made products. Another shop specializes in quality chocolate candy. There is an awesome fresh sandwich shop and much more. In the spring and summer, outdoor fresh fruit and vegetable vendors compete for your business. Quality fresh WV produce is available in great variety and quantity. The various WV peaches are a delicacy in summer and last until the late summer/fall arrival of the delicious apples. My wife and I frequent this outdoor portion of the market at least twice weekly. This is also a great place to purchase hanging flower baskets and other flowers and plants for indoor or outdoor use. Ellen's delicious homemade style ice cream is available on weekends. The Capitol Market has something for everyone and will keep you coming back!

Seasonally scrumptious!

By Eddie L |

Lots of free parking. Outdoors with veggies & flowers. Inside - expresso to ice cream & sandwiches. Glad we stopped!

The most beautiful flowers

By manomeal |

If you need flowers, plants, vegetables , you can get it all at Capitol Market. Worth a drive, just get there before 6pm. Don't forget to get lunch or dinner at Soho's!.

Best Market in WV

By asnedegar |

This market has something for everyone.. Outdoor vendor's with plants, fresh vegetables. Even Christmas trees in December. Inside is the purple onion. Fresh vegetables, great salads and wraps. Also visit Holls Chocolate's, the best you will ever eat. Great wine shop. Great place to eat is Soho's. Wonderful coffee shop. Also a meat market. And a fish market. You will not be disappointed.

Large/local farmers market

By harv2u |

The fresh fruits, vegetables, and flowers are just great to walk around. The inside shops of the old train station were nice. The visitors center in the old train station was also a good place to get information about the area and had some good restaurant recommendations.

Great local everything

Local produce, good wine, great gifts, chocolate, sea food, coffee shop, sushi, ice cream... Soho's restaurant and charming area - GO

Good representation of WV

By _soulembrace |

If you're looking for a place that showcases the best of what WV has to offer, this is it. Delicious food, beautiful flowers, fresh produce, local artisans and vendors...the Capitol Market has it all. I actually happen to work close by and frequent Johnnie's Meat Market for lunch. I've never had a bad meal there, or the Fresh Seafood Market for that matter. Highly recommend!

Capitol Market

By Brian O |

The Capitol Market has everything you need to create superior meals. Johnnie's Meat Market consistently has superior cuts of beef and the best bacon I have found, including New York and Philadelphia. Other shops offer fresh, seasonal vegetables. Other shops offer fresh seafood and even superior sushi. The local growers bring in fresh flowers and vegetables. Across the street there is a superior bread bakery. There are seating areas indoors as well as some seating outdoors overlooking the actual fresh flower and produce market. Parking is sufficient, but requires some patience on a Saturday morning. Easy to reach from the central business areas of Charleston. Safe and clean. Also a good wine and cheese shop for the more refined palates. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming

Nice market,friendly people!

Since we generally enjoy seeing local markets when we travel we stopped in for morning coffee before leaving town so we could check this one out. It's located in the old train depot just off the interstate as you near downtown.
It was a Tuesday morning (Halloween actually!) so it wasn't bustling but I can only imagine how busy it must get on weekends. They do open every day except holidays. Hours might vary though.
Despite it being a Tuesday there was a good selection of produce, they even had an enormous pumpkin on display,it weighed in at 1050 lbs, never in my life had I seen such a pumpkin! (Of course we had to take a picture!)
Inside there was a little of everything but most products seemed more on the gourmet side, and they also had quite a selection of local goodies such as jams, jellies and honey. We bought a few jams and a honey to take back home to give as gifts. It dosent compare to Philadelphia's Reading Terminal Market or Manhattan's Chelsea Market in size but given that Charleston is not a large city it wasn't bad at all,and vendors all were very friendly greeting us as we walked by their stands without pressuring us to buy. So if you enjoy local markets or want to pick up some local food items to take home with you then I would definitely suggest checking it out!

Nice place if you have time

By cfb410 |

If you want a variey and just a light bite, this is the place for you. it also has a lot of items for sale; outside has garden stalls.

Great Foodie location

By Sidecar Rich |

We found this new market in Charleston, WV, it has Fresh seafood, butcher shop, wine and cheese shop, coffee shops, gifts, sauces, outdoor flower and plant shops all located in an old restored warehouse and docks. They also have cooking lessons! http://www.capitolmarket.net/

Nice Market

By Baba L |

I hear you should wait for the weekend (I haven't gone during the week, yet) Prices are comparable to supermarkets. Be careful, as not ALL produce is organic or local. Some vendors are offering same produce found in the big boxes. The meat market has the best prices and was told all meat is local raised. Lots of plant, flowers, succulents for good prices. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. Tomatoes, melons and peaches were some great buys for me.

Urban Farmer's Market

Great place to get flowers for planting, Christmas trees, fresh high quality specialty meats, fish market, and fresh produce.

Charleston, WV Market

By Tourist538132 |

Very quaint, outside and indoor market. Vegetables, fruits, dry beans, cheeses, wine, spices, fresh seafood and locally made items, such as meat rubs, sauces, etc. Small restaurant inside, mainly sandwiches. Some items a little pricey, but worth the visit.

One of the better things in Charleston.

By jgbtravels |

I love coming here to check out the produce, flowers and other products in Charleston. For the size city that Charleston is its great that this market is here. The fall is my favorite time to come here to see all the pumpkins and mums for sell. Let’s not forget the vendors inside the building, too. Plus Soho the Italian restaurant resides in the friendly confines of the market that adds to the value of this market. Free parking is a huge plus to boot.

Great Place to Shop

By ThomasTCat |

We came here a couple of times while we were in Charleston because there was so much to see. Loved the atmosphere and appreciated the free parking that was available. They had everything from fruits, vegetables, books written by local authors, gourmet Swiss chocolates, and the list goes on and on. We would have loved to eat at Soho's because the menu looked extensive and the prices were so reasonable. Unfortunately we weren't there during lunch or dinner time and never made it back to enjoy a meal there.

A GREAT place to shop summer or winter.....

By DaveVWV |

We had an hour to kill during a visit to Charleston so we went to Capital Market. We have been during the summer when there are many farm direct sellers with great stuff to sell. We were surprised at what all was available during the winter months. While not near the fresh fruit and veggies the indoor stores still had lots of specialty food items and we picked up some fantastic apples and fresh made cookies. While late summer is the best time to visit even the middle of winter is great.

So Many Choices

By A T |

If you need fresh produce, they have it. Wine and cheese, chocolate and lunch they have that too. This market is inside and out with parking on two sides of the building.

The market is well organized with a large selection of items for purchase. It was fun walking around and seeing everything the vendors had to offer. It is open daily and I would highly recommend a visit.

Entertaining and a lot of options, even on the weekdays

By Echolynn |

It was fun to stop in and explore the market after work one afternoon. Since it was a weekday there weren't really a lot of stalls outside, but the indoor market was pretty cool. There's a LOT of local treats, foods, souvenirs, etc. Every single shop owner that I interacted with was very friendly and helpful. And the produce on display looked REALLY good. If I were a local, I'd definitely be getting all of my fresh foods there.

Celebrating WV

I love the fresh grown vegetables, the homemade ice cream, WV made products and the wonderful food and atmosphere at Sohos! I can never leave there without supporting multiple vendors! I love it

Great midtown market

By joycea217 |

This is a great farmers market with good plant and food selections. Interior market has a nice wine shop and restaurants.

Great little market

By vanomad |

Stopped by this place while in town due to the rave reviews. Went in the old brick building and was in awe. Such a neat vibe. Walked into the Purple Onion which is a gourmet food market of sorts. Lots of items you can’t find in your local grocery store. Produce, jams, candies, seasonings and spices were great. Prices weren’t bad either. Went on down the market into a wine store, a couple restaurants and another store with locally made glass items. There was a store with beautiful fresh meats and cheeses, also seafood. The only thing that makes me not rate this excellent is that there just wasn’t enough of it! Definitely stop in if your in town. Great eclectic market.

New to Charleston...a organic/fresh foodie must!

By Dreama B |

I had a church friend that was afraid of downtown Charleston... OK...she was from a small town in WV...it is a different world. So we started at the Farmer's Market for lunch... Johnnie's Boars Head Meat.. can not be beat.. she even treated her husband to a lunch date a few days later. Such a sweet stopping point... Seafood...Big Fish and premade salads... don't forget the coffee shop. The question was ...does this place have a bar... they do sell wines from WV/world.. and SOHO's Italian Cafe is there.

Lots of variety

By Mdub90 |

Loved the variety of vendors inside and the outside market was great. Prices outside were very affordable and had I had more room in my car, I would have traveled home with a lot of outdoor plants and decorations! Coffee vendor inside was amazing.

Great Products!

By johnnyfrazier |

Love the Purple Onion, and the Wine and Cheese Market, The Seafood Market!! All of the Shops are 5 Stars!

It is a good place to buy stuff. I recommend coming for easter.

By hjadfkhgafhgkafs |

You can buy snacks for the kids and some cheeses and others. I recommend the chocolate shop. It has great chocolate. You can also bring the kids because it is a kid friendly experience. If you want to bring home some food on a trip you don't get better than this.

Girls trip/ nice stop to take a break on a road trip

By krisc93 |

We made this a stop to and from Pembroke VA from Ohio. Very nice little market. We made our purchases in the way home and the produce was some of the best I’ve ever had. Very nice selection. A few places to have lunch inside. The little shops have some unique items. Fairly priced.

Great place to visit.

By Sherry V |

Bountiful flowers and produce outside with a nice indoor hall. We had great coffee from Mea Cuppa and chocolate from Hills.

Low Priced Fresh Produce

By Darren Ami B |

This is a great place to get low priced fresh produce. We bought the cherry tomatoes and the cucumbers and they were really good. The vegetables are sold outside, inside there are vendors that sell a variety of candies, jams, jellies, seasonings, rubs and much more. There's also places where you can order food - we tried the seafood place and it was good, but the oysters didn't taste right and the fish was chewy, the french fries and the crab cakes were great though. The Big Fish Sandwich (on a croissant) was their specialty - it was good, but tasted a little dry and needed tartar sauce.

We did notice that the vendors that we visited were not very friendly so I wouldn't expect to be greeted with smiles and kindness.
