My family was in Pittsburgh visiting my freshman daughter at Pitt. None of us had visited before and were blown away by the variety and quality of exhibits. The dinosaurs were great but the gemstone exhibit was too. It was almost too much for one afternoon so we will be back!! It got better with every turn :)

Really 2 Museums in one. Half is art, half natural history. took all day to work through everything. Although it is a very old museum it is clean and very well maintained. A Pittsburgh visit must see. A good value for the money.

We didn't even know about this museum before attending, and we loved that it was "free" during the month we were there. It is a great museum that is set up well with a lot of interesting artifacts and information. I highly recommend this stop when visiting Pittsburgh, even if you have to pay to get in.

Huge museum. We spent 5 hours there, but you could stay the whole 7 hours it was open. All sorts of different exhibits. American Indian, Egyptian, ice age, a bird hall with a theatre where you can sit and listen to birds singing, dinosaurs, rocks and minerals and gems, I liked everything except for the hideous modern art exhibits, which in many instances were no better than the child scribblings I hung on my fridge. It's a shame they wasted so much space on it. But you can just skip those.
For those of you with a ROAM pass you can get in for free and save $25 admission.

Visted here with our grandchildren. They loved digging for dinosaur bones! We visted the Children's Museum last year, and feel the Carnegie Museum is actually more family friendly.

Great museum to visit, especially for kids. My wife and I walked through at a brisk pace, we were tired from the visit to the art museum. Very impressive exhibits, but for us, there was little social distancing with so many kids walking around. I would recommend if you have kids, but not so much for couples.

I’ve never been to the Smithsonian and I don’t have much frame of reference, but this is the best museum I’ve ever visited! Went once and wasn’t sure I fully appreciated it as wife and I were rushed for time. Went back and took time and it confirmed my belief that this place is great! Takes a full day to appreciate, and that doesn’t include the other 3 Carnegie museums. Great area right on the Pitt campus.

It’s difficult to describe everything this museum has to offer. It is a truly stunning collection of antiquities, beautifully preserved, restored and displayed. Tours are available, but the displays are clearly marked and explained. Tours do provide many wonderful additional elaborations. During a more recent tour I was taken into the storage and work areas in the basement. I was surprised to find they have crates of fossils from the Carnegie excavations along the border of Utah and Colorado that haven’t even been opened since their arrival in the late nineteenth century because there are simply too many of them. Ultimately the Carnegie excavations were turned over to the Federal Government for the establishment of the Dinosaur National Monument. While the dinosaur exhibits are pretty incredible, the museum has much, much more to offer.

Wanted to go see the Art Museum and found it was connected to the Natural History Museum! We saw Monets, Warhols and Old Masters along with Dinosaur bones, gems, and architectual replicas. A brilliant experience! Anxious to go back and find more.

Great museum you need at least 2-3 hours. We enjoyed all the gallery's especially gem, architecture, animals and native American galleries.

By Brittany T |

We went with my 5 year old son and 2 year old daughter. Staff was very nice. Our tour guide for the dinosaurs was fantastic and was able to keep small kids entertained. Would definitely reccomend this place for families.

By Kendy M |

It has an amazing exhibits. I love history. It would be amazing for kids/adults to even see. I went on a class field trip here. I loved it.

By Jennifer G |

Easy parking, garage located on site. Lots to see in the museum, the dinosaur exhibits were a favorite of my 4yo. Plenty to interact with and enjoy. Spent about 3-4 hours there.

By Linda K |

Duquesne incline was fun but when we got to the top, it was so foggy, you couldn't even see out the windows or from the observation deck. Fair warning - they don't "compensate" for this so make sure it is a sunny or clear day when you visit. We did go back in the evening and it is amazing in the dark to look out over the city. Parking is $8 for 0-2 hours and is also across the street so be prepared to walk about a block and up three flights of steps to get to the ride.

Pittsburgh zoo is large and very hilly so be prepared. Most of the animals were out but, apparently, their polar bear is quite old and isn't out if it's warm - it was in the 60's and they said it was too hot for him. The aquarium was great and we enjoyed our visit at the zoo.

Downtown parking was outrageous - minimum we saw was $10 for first hour but most were more so we didn't walk the strip area. There was a dance competition and a LaCrosse game going on which probably increased the cost since most of the lots had portable signs that were definitely easy to change.

By SteelCity13 |

Amazing! So much to see and do and just enough interaction for the kids not to get bored. So cool how the dinosaurs got there and history behind collecting them. The gem collection is amazing. The Egyptian room was closed but you could see alittle of the collection in one of the rooms. Overall we spent 4 hours there and didnt get to see everything. Will be back

By Wolf Moon |

I really enjoy this museum. The place is massive, so take your time, don't rush, and explore everything they have to offer. There's plenty of parking on site, and they also have a nice little cafe to keep your energy up during your visit.

By WadeandLori |

This is a very nice facility with great exhibits. But my wife didn’t feel like walking very much and got bored. It’s a great place for children.

By 4FamFuun |

Just Amazing!!! Well worth the time!!
Largest Gem/stones collection I’ve ever seen. It takes some time to make it through, so plan to be there for hours! Worth every minute!!!

By KansasCityBob |

Not family friendly! This is the only museum in the country I've ever seen that has edicts to dictate how you should and should not hold your baby. Hold your child for split second in the "wrong" way, and you will pounced upon by someone in a blue shirt, who will scold you in the rudest way possible. Not one of the rude blue shirts volunteered that strollers were available in the front (selection is limited). Selection of kid-friendly foods in the cafe is also limited. Finally, restrooms are also very limited and poorly marked - my toddler nearly had an accident while we were trying to find one.

By Rhiannon S |

I always start my visit in the ancient Egyptian room because it is one of my favorites. I work my way down to my ultimate favorite - Dinosaurs!!

I love that so many of the exhibits are interactive for the kids. And I plan to bring my kids down for a visit in the near future.

By Nubinskis |

This museum is so huge, we only had time for the dinosaurs. The dinosaur exhibit is well done with nice dinosaur sculptures. I was lucky enough to go through with a docent for a private tour. She pulled out replica dinosaur bones to explain points. It was an excellent, educational tour. I would like to go back to visit the rest of the museum. The dinosaur gift shop had many interesting items for all ages.

By The_Travel_Family |

Came here whilst visiting Pittsburgh. Managed to get a Military discount on the tickets which was good. Dinosaur and minerals exhibit was good.

The entrance was rather odd, we managed to find a map half way around which would have been helpful at the entrance. Find yourself walking through areas to get to others areas, strange layout.

Carrying backpack policy was stupid. You gave to carry in hand or on your front so you do not knock anything over, the whole museum had nothing you could knock over so this rule is just dumb!

If you have been to NYC, DC or London NHM don’t waste your time with this one.

By Jean C. Taveras |

Visiting the Carnegie Museum of Art and Natural History was fantastic. This could take up half your day so plan accordingly. There are lots of areas to cover and it’s definitely worth it.

By KarenAzinger |

The Carnegie Museum of Natural History is a real gem! The dinosaur exhibit is amazing, one of the best in the USA. They even have exhibits of sea dinosaurs. And the Hall of Minerals is exquisite, like a giant jewel box. If you are in Pgh, don't miss the opportunity to explore this museum.

By YetiStuff |

Did you know that this museum has the very first T. rex ever discovered? Well, it does! T.rex 9380 (pictured) was discovered in Hell Creek, Montana by legendary fossil hunter Barnum Brown in 1902. The massive skeleton was shipped to the American Museum of Natural History in NYC. Three years later it was designated the holotype, or name-bearing specimen, of the species Tyrannosaurus rex. Following the 1941 entry of the USA into World War II, the holotype was sold to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh for protection against possible bombing raids. And, now you know.

Love going to visit this museum. Parking is convenient, nice restaurants within walking distance & even in the museum area.

By Wise Woman Wanderer |

This museum is a mini version of the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC. The dinosaur collection was quite extensive, but the rest of the collection was quite impressive, too. Of course, they do not follow the biblical timeline of creation.

By rayroy |

We had a good time at the museum. Especially in the gem exhibit. Now I'm not crazy about rocks but this exhibit was really nice. There were so many different gems from all over the country and world and the list were they are from it was cool. They dino exhibit was cooler when I was younger but it's still really nice and big. Don't know that I would pay the $20 entrance fee but if u go on a weekday after 3 it's only $10.

By misfitfary89 |

Its a busy place, parking is flat rate $7 sat&sun AND If youre an access holder (ebt) you get in for $1 per person up to 4 people. I personally cant afford regular price for 2 adults and 2 kids plus my kids were really only into the added on reptile section of it so im glad it wasnt full price. This is my review based on budgetting and with a 5 and 2 year old!!

By Meredith F |

We only had 2 hours to spend at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History so we focused our time on the dinosaurs and the North American and African wildlife. It was a very interesting 2 hours! It felt like every room was a new adventure. I’d love to go back to see the rest of the museum.

By Jack L |

My visit was to view, read and photograph the dinosaurs, This section is located behind one the museum's gifts, just keep heading straight ahead until 'Dinosaurs In Their Time" First is the fish or sealife fossils that leads to the dinosaurs. I photographed 47 dinosaurs, 26 fish/sea life & 21 mammals which is after the dinosaurs.

One staff member explained that 70% of a dinosaur's skeleton is real with the rest being 30% cast , with the fish fossils being 100% real. The mammals I would estimate 50-50 replica & real. Some of the fish are from Kansa, YES Kansas which was an ocean 100 M.Y.A.-Million Years Ago. The mammals are are 10,00 to 20,000 years ago.

After the natural history I photgraphed the architecture of Greek & Roman sculpture which I estimate to be 4,000 years of age.

There ate two cafes-The Cafe Carnegie located on first floor which is an upper class facility. The second cafe is the Fossil Fuels Cafe, which is located beneath the natural history museum. This cafe is more family-friendly that serves sandwiches, soups, pastries, pizza, & daily specials. This cafe I ate at, which was three large slices of pizza, two slices would have been euough.

The museum is three floors. First floor is mostly natural history. Second floor is more natural history-but only 10,00 years old-that includes Hall of African Wildlife, Hall of Botany, North American Life, Heinz & ScaifiGalleries. Third floor has the Bird Hall, R.P Simmon Family Gallery & the Walten of Ancient Egypt. Each floor has restroom facilities.

At admissions a visitor should pick-up a map that will show all the exhibits on each floor. There are two gift shops. The Art Store has prints, crafted gifts, dedesigner jeweley & books. Second shop is the Nantural History shop, mostly deals mostly dinosaurs & related items.

Parking is located in the rear of the museum, which I think was $10.00. Each visitor hsas to stop at one of two gates attended by a cashier, after the gate drive to open garage, park & drive oot.

I would say this museum would be the second enjoyable natural history behind the natural museum in the city of Wahington. A visit is highly recommended. A see a return visit with floors # 2&3 to visit.

We attended Potterfest as a family with teens, and a family with toddlers. The organization was poor. We stood in a very long line waiting on tickets that we already bought but no one was clear as to where we should be. The staff was few and far between so they were probably feeling overworked which lead most of them being rude. The activities were either not where they were supposed to be at the designated time or the line was super long. Not worth the money, or the drive there.

By chrisarbak |

As a child in the fifties, dinosaurs, rocks, minerals and minerals were my fascination. Unfortunately for me, there weren't many spectacular specimens available to me on the west coast of the US. Many such were collected when Andrew Carnegie was building this museum and are now on display here. Worth the time of anyone interested such things.

By Marybeth S |

We live in the Burgh so we do go fairly often but I admit it has been quite a few months since our last visit. This summer we did a DoDo event there which got us “back stage “ so to speak and showed us some of the many drawers with bird and bug specimens. In January we went with family from New York who frequently visit the Met and they agree this museum is in that family. Well worth visiting more often!

By pittsburgher2012 |

Remarkable collection of dinosaurs, gems and minerals, birds, Egyptian artifacts, Polar World, , butterflies and other insects, fossils, American Indians, and more. Excellent docent tours and gift shop. Pittsburgh is very fortunate to have this museum, which is physically attached to the Carnegie Museum of Art.. ,

There is a little bit of everything here. Ticket is good for the natural history museum as well as the art museum. We only had enough time to do the natural history side spending around 3 hours there. They had an architecture room with casts of various ancient structures and statues, there are dinosaur bones, gems and minerals, 'stuffed' animals in habitat 'dioramas', various insect displays, and much more to explore. There are two cafe areas that we saw, ate at the fossil fuel cafe - was actually reasonable prices. A couple gift shops as well on site. Staff was friendly and helpful. In fact, we asked about a PA teacher/educator discount we heard about at the admissions desk. Apparently, you usually apply ahead of time but they made an exception at the desk and gave us the educator discount for this visit since we were visiting from out of town. Great customer service! There is convenient parking nearby also - a lot as well as parking deck next door, street meter parking, etc. Overall, had a very nice afternoon - definitely worth a visit when you are Pittsburgh.

We had some time to kill before our flight out of Pittsburgh in the evening so we went to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. I was very pleasantly surprised at the size and quality of this museum. The exhibit on dinosaurs and other fossils was great but the mineral exhibit really blew me away. If you are a rock hound this place is a must see. Beautifully exhibited collection of minerals and not just a small room, a huge room and then some. The specimens themselves were also very large. We did a quick run through the Egyptian exhibit and the Polar exhibit which were also very nice. We had to leave for the airport so didn't get to see the rest of the museum or the attached Museum of Art. I highly recommend this museum and will definitely go again next time I'm in the area.

Used our AST membership so admission was free. Our boys 7 and 9 had a great time. They enjoyed the dinosaurs, especially touching a real dinosaur fossil. The gems were amazing as well.

By Meena |

We loved our visit, dinosaurs are always fun to watch, bird hall and stone&gem halls are fantastic, lots of fun activities for children, would have love more elaborated Egypt section but overall very nice to visit.

By lindsay0215 |

Teachers can get a discount! You have to go on their website and fill out some info to get your teacher pass. It’s worth it! Admission is high so having this pass when our kids were younger was great. We could come more often especially during the winter months.

By Brent M |

They share our historic building with Carnegie Museum of Art, and buying a ticket includes access to both museums which is fabulous. The Natural History had lots of dinosaur skeletons and lifesize animals so you could see how really big or small an animal was up close. THe Museum of art had some amazing relics and some wonderful paintings (including a Van Gogh)

By katwithadog |

Can't imagine giving anything less than a 5-star... dinosaurs, cool rocks, a bird hall, and an Egyptian room? What more do people want? Because there is more, and I really wish we'd had more time to see the things we missed! A few of the older exhibits could have had a slightly better setup in terms of lighting and probably accessibility, but it's a great museum with a lot going on.

Other than the main exhibits: We paid $3 extra for a special exhibit ("Monsterfish"), and I could have done without that section. Our group was two adults, so we mostly wanted to look, rather than play with things and interact, but there seemed to be plenty of that, too, for the people who brought kids. The cafe was overpriced but tasty, which I'd honestly expect; they have a solid gift shop. The ticket includes access to the art museum, but we didn't have time. If you're nerdy enough to want to spend your day at a natural history museum, you're nerdy enough to enjoy this one!

By Helen P |

You need a full day to see everything. The gem and minerals were amazing. Kids will love the dinosaurs. The building itself is amazing!

By randy c |

Our six year old granddaughter asked to go to the Carnegie, two days in a row....it's that good and the admission price is reasonable. This is one of the best things in Pittsburgh....easy to get to and hard to leave.

By mariangeua |

Beautiful galleries with lots of kids friendly activities. Great and instructive displays. The best thing is to be able to see scientists working at dinosaurs!

By wirttravelers |

Interesting museum, especially if you are interested in dinosaurs. There are a number of excellent skeletons of dinosaurs, prehistoric fish, and prehistoric mammals. Also interesting are the rocks and gemstones, the Egyptian section, and the life-size dioramas of animals.
With the Carnegie, you get two museums for the price of one. Your admission also gets you into the Art Museum, which doesn't have a lot of spectacular pieces but does have a few familiar names like Monet, Van Gogh, and Rothko.
Great for a couple hours visit and the staff was very helpful.

By advisormomma |

good variety of exhibits. Well layed out. Lots of interactive things for the kids ( and adults). Gem stone exhibit. Right now there is a National Geographic photo exhibit which was amazing. Nice little gift shop. They will validate you’re parking ticket for $5 discount.

By poetessktj1 |

Went with my sister to several of the Carnegie museums. The natural history was not as extensive as we had hoped and most of the interactive exhibits were geared for kids. The geological exhibits were great as was the rock & gem area. All in all an interesting couple of hours.

By mamathoma |

This is a fabulous museum which has areas devoted to many different topics: dinosaurs, birds, minerals and gems, mammals, the arctic, and our favorite the Hall of Architecture. All displays are well done and there is much to see and learn. This building is physically connected to the art museum and you could spend hours between the two buildings.

By James C |

This museum is fantastic. The Dioramas are great. Very interesting exhibits which are well explained. This is a must see in Pittsburgh.

By Normandie1936 |

We keep returning because there is always something to see. The special display which allows visitors to watch staff working on the dinosaur bones is wonderful. Great for kids--and anyone!
The Native American display is outstanding. We'll be back for another visit.

By Linda G |

My husband is a collector of mineral so it was the first things we when and look at o my. Then we slow made our way around the first floor. we came back the next day to see the second floor.

By hokidoki1 |

This museum is amazing. We spent nearly 3 hours here and still did not fully see everything this museum has to offer. It’s fascinating to read about the dinosaurs and to actually see the skeletal remains that were discovered and skillfully put together. The gemstones and mineral displays were beautiful. I enjoyed the Impressionism paintings in the Museum of Art area. The collection in the Hall of American Indians and Ancient Egypt was also one of my favorites.

By Linda T |

This museum is a Pittsburgh gem. It has a wonderful dinosaur exhibit, as well as, a fabulous Egyptian Exhibit. Also, the Hillman Hall of Minerals and Gems is definitely worth a look see!

By Joseph D |

This museum ranks there with some of my favorites, great collection of fossils and minerals with a nice layout.

By mkats46 |

The best is that you are visiting two museums - museum of natural history and museum of art. You can enjoy both part of your minds

By Ekaufee17 |

Plan a few hours to get through the entire building. My wife and I took my son to the museum in the spring, and it was totally worth it. The little man isn't much for art, so we skipped that portion. What he did love however, were the prehistoric fossils, the dinosaurs especially. The Carnegie museum has a ton of variety in this regard. The section that I enjoyed was the Natural history taxidermy section upstairs, with all the native animals. There is also a pretty awesome Native American exhibit, and a really informative area on the ancient Egyptians among many, many others. All in all, it was a fun day, and I would go back in the future.

By Karen s |

We so enjoyed this first class museum! Hadn’t been since our kid was small. As always we were amazed at the exhibits! So much to learn. By far one of our favorites in the United States

By Enthusiastic_Roamer |

Like the Tardis, this museum is bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside! Easily spend hours here. Wonderful art spanning centuries and amazing natural history displays; something for everyone.

By Peter B |

The collection of dinosaurs and mineral crystals is well worth seeing . The art gallery has numerous famous works of art . The Cafe serves good lunchtime meals.

By LaurenEA91 |

We were there for about 2 1/2 hours and didn't get even close to seeing everything. The rocks and minerals were really cool as were the dinosaurs. Especially since for some of them they pointed out which parts were real, a cast, or a speculation. Hall of birds was neat and husband enjoyed the Egypt exhibition.

By johnlU4249YZ |

The exhibits were phenomenal, especially the gem/precious stone collection. It is worthy of mulitple visits.

By Psylocke19 |

We needed something to do that was after 5 on a rainy day & this was perfect. They stay open till 8! They have art & history so you can spend lots of time here. Parking & coffee shop on location. (Grab some coffee before you start your tour!)We had a little trouble finding out where we were supposed to go to start & how to flow through the museum. We were told to start by going through the gift shop! I wish they had signs or people able to help on each floor. Once we figured out the layout we had a great time. Love the giant crystal/mineral collection! Most of the exhibit is dead stuffed animals in behind glass museum scenes. Kinda creepy but we still had fun.

By DCSKV |

This was a great place to spend a day. We did the Art Museum first and then the Natural History. If you have kids go straight to Natural History. The dinosaurs are great. We had a very nice lunch in the cafe. Great value reasonable admission and the parking is very convenient.

By jrweis6 |

In town for a wedding we were had limited time to explore all Pittsburgh had to offer. The Carnegie Museum of Natural History was a great choice. We even had the personal touch from a very knowledge lady who explained to us the history of the development of the museum and how to navigate through the dinosaur exhibit.

By Sandra B |

This was one of two highlights of my trip and definitely the best Museum of Natural History I have ever had the pleasure of exploring. I just wish we had had more time there as two hours was just not enough time.

By ajs |

An incredible natural history museum. An awesome family experience. Each display conveys an important lesson. The Italian Presipio (a Neapolitan Nativity scene) is beautiful, timeless art. The dinosaur displays are world class with detailed lessons, only matched by the gem collection.

By Barbara M |

The gem stone exhibit is amazing. I can only compare the gem stone exhibition to the one at Harvard University. This exhibit is dazzling with displays that enhance tie gem stones.

By Hal B |

We parked in the parking garage next to the Museum and it was close enough for us to also walk to the Phipps Conservatory. I believe it was around $5.00 for 4 hours. The Museum is very interesting and they have a very extensive minerals collection. Of course the dinosaurs are the best!

By E Bear |

The Carnegie Museum of natural history is a family-oriented place for people who want to learn more about dinosaurs, mummies and more. This is also linked with the Carnegie Museum of art.

By Matt D |

Well maintained and expansive museum. Extensive gemstone/mineral exhibits and fantastic dinosaur exhibits. If you go after 3pm on the weekdays you get in for half off. We had no problem getting through the museum in 2 hours. I would recommend it unless you have little ones that don't move too quick :)

By Kjasie |

By far one of the best natural history museums that isn’t busy! So many awesome exhibits. Perfect for ages 2-60+ everyone thoroughly enjoyed it!

By Kathe C |

I used to roam the halls of this museum as a child. Admission was free then, and a friend and I would take the trolley and spend the day exploring. We especially loved the dioramas and dinosaurs. I still get the same thrill visiting today. A marvelous collection!

By Joette C |

We were impressed with the whole collection, especially the dinosaurs. The docents were informative. We will go back!

By Sara |

This museum is housed in the same building as the Carnegie Museum of Art. Admission includes both museums. I recommend 3-4 hours to see everything. Great exhibits on prehistoric animals!

By Deepak the traveller |

One of the best museums in US.This is an excellent place for art lovers as well as history lovers - there are two museums and one must plan a full day minimum to see and explore this great museum!

By Bryan H |

First off, this museum is expensive for many people. But, there's a lot there! We spent hours looking at dinosaurs and such, and also the gem and precious stone exhibit which is out of the world! They have a cafe with good teas and baked goods. There are lockers if you want to stow away your valuables. And there are plenty of bathrooms throughout. Easy to get over-saturated.

By Chris |

We went to the museum on a rainy day, great experience! We spent about 3 hours there and didn't even get to see the whole place. The mineral and gem collection was massive and very interesting, the dinosaur exhibits were fabulous, and we got to see a bunch of other stuff such as art, a National Geographic exhibit, some entomology, and that's about all we had time for. The museum is free, just have to find a parking spot which you will have to pay for. They have exhibits that change, some that don't, you could visit here time and time again and learn something or see something new you never knew existed. Highly recommended!!

By johndavid1945 |

....only smaller. Lots of ancient artifacts and history creatively displayed. Be sure to take the kids.....

By Ryan Schuster |

Always a fun trip. Awesome collection of dinosaurs. If you have a Carnegie library card, you can get free passes to the museum from the library

By Connie V |

Loved our full day at the museum. The museum content is expansive and the building itself is absolutely beautiful. Had many wonderful encounters with the volunteers who were very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. Great dinosaur exhibit. Loved the gem exhibit but please turn up the thermostat in the Polar exhibit.

By Judith A |

The giant dinosaur skeletons are pretty much as I remember the from 60 years ago when I visited as a child. The same goes for the Eskimo, now Inuit igloo and dioramas. Still fun and interesting, but somehow it seems that the museum could have modernized a bit more.

By Maral E |

This place is WOW
Every exhibit has is own unique charm that draws you in!
Of course everyone loves the dinosaur and rock, crystal and gem exhibit. But there's also Roman and Greek architecture, native American and arctic regions history and of course there's a whooole other side to ther museum for arts (didn't hang out there too much, not my cup of tea) it took me 3 hrs to do 3 floors or natural history museum and speed walking round of 1 art floor.

By Sanna |

My companion was thrilled to "see the dinosaurs", despite his mature age. Indeed the fossils are exclusive, but there is plenty to see in the museum. I found the Native Americans section particularly interesting.

By douglas s |

Admission is to both the art museum and the Natural History museum. The Natural History section probably better for kids - the whole place was first class - great collection of art

By RaceTrackHunter1970 |

Went here for the first time ever yesterday. Really enjoyed this museum. The dinosaur exhibit is one of the best I've ever seen. Animal dioramas on floor #2 were very nice as well. Gem and minerals, although not my cup of tea, were impressive and displayed beautifully. Egyptian and American Indian displays were OK, again not my thing. Bird display was huge. All in all spent 4 hours here and enjoyed the vast majority of the displays. Didn't do the art museum portion - never understood "art". Would absolutely visit again.

By Samantha H |

we used to spend our downtime at the museum when we couldn't spend it outside. interesting things for ALL ages, our son really loved the dinosaurs and rock exhibits.

By HotCobbSalad |

Fantastic educational must see in the Pittsburgh area. This world famous mirin is actually 2 museums in one, containing both the Natural History museum and the Art Museum.

The Natural history museum houses an impressive collection of animal specimens including Dinosaurs and animals of all different species all arranged in incredible dioramas. In addition they have an extensive collection of mineral samples and an Egypt exhibit.

Additionally you can watch actual museum staff studying and preserving artifacts.

By DustanDennington |

Lots of dinosaurs place for kids to dig up bones. See them working on new finds during special times. Not very good food would eat before you come. Large display upstairs of native Americans and second floor has some standard animals and a decent hallway full of birds. Food for the kids 3 to 12 I'd say.

By Michael M |

A fantastic museum with several amazing displays, with the highlight having to be the dinosaurs of course. Two genuine T-rex skeletons, an apatosaurus, a diplodocus, and many more: worth admission for these alone. Many other displays as well: some relatively small.

By rabuffubar526 |

I went with my two grandchildren, aged 7 and 2, and both of them had so much fun here. It has a lot of interactive hands on activities for them and so much to see and do. They loved all of the displays and we easily spent 3 hours here and could have stayed longer. Will definitely go back here. The kids loved it.

By JohnandDeb2 |

We only had about 3 hours to see the art and natural history museum. We focused mostly on the Hopi exhibit and it was wonderful. You could easily spend the whole day covering both sides of the museum.

By Sandy D |

You know I remember the museum a lot different than it is now. For me ….it was better before. Especially the dinosaurs.

By William T |

Wonderful compressive museum with great paintings, sculptures, monuments casts, & even dinosaurs! There is so much to see here. Even the dinosaur collection [which we did not expect to visit] is well worth your time.

By Danielle R |

My son loves all things Dinosaur and Andrew Carnegie’s museum did not disappoint. Very cool display of an amazing collection! Parking is located right on premises. It was inexpensive to park and visit. 👍🏻👍🏻

By William F |

This is one of the finest museums. I've been coming here since childhood when everything was free. Some of the meticulously maintained displays have been there as long as I remember. To see everything here you'll need to spend a good bit of time. Renowned for its dinosaur collection that are some of the best in the world. If in Pittsburgh visiting make this one of your stops and don't forget the art collection next door. There's parking for the Museums and street parking as well.

By eileeninseattle |

The Carnegie Museum (pronounced car NEGG ee, btw) is a wonderful museum with incredible, varied exhibits. The dinosaurs are particularly amazing...the Carnegie was instrumental in discovering prehistoric fossils in the early 20th century and the collection is unparalleled. I grew up in Pittsburgh and loved my very frequent visits to the museum; I still love visiting whenever I am in town. The Museum of Natural History is connected to the very good art museum. One admission fee covers both. Go early and stay for the day. You won't regret it.

My family and I visited in June and we cannot say enough good things of this museum. The size of this museum is huge. The items in this museum are spectacular! We definitely need a second trip to fully see all. Their Staff was excellent on answering our questions especially on dinosaurs! I would come here again, it is well worth the trip and time spent.

By Scott A |

The museum is too big to do in one day. If you are hungry eat before you go. The service and food are below average. Not very welcoming at all. In general the staff and people at museum are not very pleasant.

By Karen G |

Whether you like dinosaurs, gemstones, eskimos, mummies, birds, or information on climate change, you've come to the right spot to experience history!

By Kari C |

My 10 year old daughter loved the museum. She spent hours just reading all of the information in the dinosaur exhibit alone!

By Rachel O. |

Our tickets included admission to both the Natural History and Art Museum. We spent a couple of hours here and didn't even touch the art part. Could be an all-day activity to search and explore. Loved the grounds (very nicely kept) and the museum stores where we purchased souvenirs were top notch. Would highly recommend visiting.

By terry1232017 |

We visited with our two and four year old grandchildren. So many hands on exhibits for the little ones. We spent over two hours discovering, playing and exploring and still our grandchildren didn't want to leave because they were having so much fun. We are already planning our next visit. Handicapped accessible with plenty of parking. Cafe offers healthy and child friendly choices. Staff is friendly and helpful.

By ValGary2014 |

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the museum. They have an outstanding collection of mastadons. It was fascinating to view one of the workrooms where they work on the construction of the skeletons.

By Jeffrey C |

Be sure to visit. Great museum, especially the rock and mineral collection. Plan on spending at least on hour.

By Tpaone |

Wonderful experience, so much natural history to see and experience...can easily spend several hours here. Lots for the tots as well to keep them engaged.

By Duane T |

We love natural history and this museum didn't let us down. Very educational and fun. Loved it! The dinosaurs were incredible.

By Carla A |

Awesome place to to visit took my grandson who absolutely loved it. Staff was helpful when asking questions.

By zebramom |

Young kids will love this museum if they like dinosaurs. The skeletons are great. We loved the dinosaur armor exhibit, which costs extra. You pay one admission price for both the Natural History and Art museums, which are in the same building and are essentially one museum. Worth the price, though if you like art and dinosaurs.

By Anna-Claire Myers |

This is one of my favorite spots to relax on a day off! The museum is a (usually) quiet haven filled with information. Also- the museum is surprisingly large and one can easily spend an entire day there. The staff is super friendly and always helpful! I’m lucky to live in a city with so much to offer.

By jpete02 |

Just visited the Natural History museum side of the museum. Elite dinosaur and gem collection on the first floor. Old fashioned, but fun, animal dioramas on the second and third floor. Ancient Egyptian rooms are currently closed and being renovated.

Museum was just the right size for us. Saw just about everything in 4 hours and weren’t exhausted like we have been at other museums.

This museum doesn’t have the depth and size of the collections at the Field in Chicago or the American Natural History Museum in New York but this is still one of the top tier Natural History Museums in the country.

To access the museum parking, drive past the Museum on Forbes and it is on the right hand side of the road. Parking is not cheap and cost $15 for four hours. Admission for family of four is $80.

By Amy M |

Pittsburgh landmark, wonderful museum,. Mix of older, classic exhibits and fresh exhibits. Go at least once a year. Building includes one of Pittsburgh's art museums and a cafe.

By Dede K |

Take a step way back in time…We have been visiting Carnegie Museum of Natural History for many years and it never gets “old” (so to speak) We love the various floors and everything the museum offers. The kids get an education around every corner!

By Jeffrey D |

I had heard a lot of good things about this Natural History Museum and was not disappointed. Highlights for me were the stellar Hillman Mineral Collection and the equally fine fossil exhibits. The dioramas with taxidermied animals were also really well done. The Egyptian and Arctic exhibits were a bit smaller but of very high quality. Unfortunately, I will need to come back to see the art exhibits another time.

By JaneT013 |

Went on a family visit (all adults). We were there on a Friday, and spent so long in the mineral exhibit and the dinosaur exhibit that we missed everything else. The collection of minerals was stunning. The dinosaurs were impressive, and beautifully exhibited and explained. But that was only the first floor. So we went back a couple of days later and looked at the most of the rest. We especially liked the Inuit and Native American exhibits. Still haven't gotten to the art museaum, so will have to go back another time.

By Thrasher82 |

The museum and art exhibits are world-class. it is great that they have activities for little ones to spur their interest in history, science, and the arts.

By James B |

What a fantastic museum. We have been coming here for 50 years and we enjoy it every time. Always something to see.

By JayBee |

Awesome place to visit! They have a large rocks, minerals, and gems collection. Museum is huge and is only $12 per person after 3 pm.

By Joellen V |

We loved the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. The informative and interactive displays were so very interesting.

By Michael B |

There’s enough here to keep most anyone occupied for a full day if not more. It’s also kid friendly and has a very nice casual dining facility.

By FQTVLR |

As far as natural history, museums go, this one is excellent. Very well laid out and some of the best dinosaur bones I’ve seen. This museum is connected to the art museum, and admission will get you into both. We spent about three hours going through the two museums. I would recommend.

By Jessica C |

The mineral exhibit was amazing, with a good history of PA minerals and the coal and steel of Pittsburgh’s past. Compared to other natural history museums, there was not as much interactive areas for learning. They were here and there, not linked throughout. There was more walking and looking around, and not as much immersion in learning. Best part was the microscopes that projected on the wall.

By Patti M |

Very nice museum. Many rooms and exhibits. Particularly loved the animal area. Several floors to peruse. Worth the visit.

By Thomas K |

Fascinating place to explore for many reasons. It's well laid out, there is a history of the efforts by Carnegie to advance knowledge, and the massive skeletons of dinosaurs found years ago.

By E H |

The dinosaur exhibit was probably the showcase here, but I was most interested in the geology stuff. For an educated person like me, the mineral exhibits were sort of a waste of time. Where are the chemical formulas? Information, please! The complex arrangement of floors, elevators and exhibit rooms almost assured I was going to get lost, even with their lousy map. I was literally led out...by a very nice member of the staff. With enhancements, added information and better maps, this could become a comfortable place to relax and explore the many interesting things they have here.

By DIORAMA MAGIC |

Great museum with a great variety of things to look at. Would say this is ultimately a 5 star museum but the NAT GEO River Monster Fish exhibit currently on display seems definitely more child focused and was an overall big disappointment. Great if you have younger kids who need the interactive stimulation, yet wasn’t nearly as exciting as what I’d anticipated as an adult who loves any & all things living in water and we would not have paid the additional amount had we known. The Gem & Mineral section as well as Prehistoric displays are wonderful, not to mention the Art exhibits were interesting. Also loved the Architecture section!

By roxyblue |

Great learning to be had at this museum. Lots to see for children and adults. I would highly recommend a visit while in Pittsburgh.

By Mtb M |

We are from Ohio and visit Pittsburgh every couple of years for the museums. We got a membership because you can use it at the Carnegie Science center and other museums around the US. This Natural History museum has beautiful architecture, marble everywhere, beautiful artwork. Very big, so it doesn’t ever get too crowded. Really nice hands on stuff for kids. If you had to pick this or the science museum I would pick this. My kids had a great time. Ages 5 and 11. Equally great for adults.

By Taraks Travels |

They have a tremendous amount material to view here. From the taxidermy animals to the art, it's truly a good visit, especially if you have kids. The T-Rex skeleton was really impressive and what you would expect. What I did not expect to see was a whale mandible that was 18.5' from end to end! Unbelievable! You could spend hours here reading about everything and we did a fair amount of reading but just walking and viewing was a neat experience.

By Maura M |

We loved the gem & dinosaur exhibits. We are spoiled by being so close to Smithsonian museums here in DC, but Carnegie was a nice adventure even as a small museum.

By amberm619 |

There were a lot of really cool exhibits and things to see. I wish some of them were a little more interactive. You really need to spend several hours here to get it all in. We had to leave about an hour and a half in because they were so strict on wearing masks. We very rarely wear masks in Tennessee so my children especially couldn’t take much of it. They were reminding them constantly to pull them up over their noses. If not for the constant mask harassment, it would’ve been great and we would’ve stayed longer.

By 1mammamia |

The Museum offers plenty of space for parking ($6, not bad). Kids will be amused by the Jurassic section, with the world's most complete brontosaurus skeleton, and a selection of other remains from all over the world.

By Karen s S |

There are so many fun and interesting things to see. I have been there several times and havent seen everything. My favorite are the dinosaurs. Recently I discovered the gem room. It was amazing and beautiful

By Diane B |

This museum is probably on the top of my list of museums to visit. In fact, I am going back to Pittsburgh just because I did not even get through 1/2 of the exhibit or maybe even 1/3.

The history of Carnegie is provided as well as his interaction with Andy Warhol. It’s quite bizarre and there are so many unique sections and art that one could actually get lost for days.

I have never seen a gallery where they have replications of actual models or statues, or tombs of very famous people, places or things.

There are so many galleries, and we only hit the impressionistic gallery in the modern art gallery, as well as the current exhibit which I thought was a bit deflated, and not really representative of the history of Hiroshima on the walls.

This is a must see! And, I am a founding member of the Seattle art museum, and I was allowed to use that pass to enjoy this wonderful venue. So please support your local museums and become members!

By EaglesFan27 |

The admission ticket includes both the natural history museum and art museum which is connected. I mostly wanted to see the natural history museum but did both. I really enjoyed the dinosaur and gem exhibits. The American Indian section was very interesting as well. There is something for everyone here and it's nice that $20 gets you into both.

By Melissa H |

What a great way to spend a cold, rainy day in Pittsburgh! This is a large museum and is connected to the Carnegie Museum of Art - both included in a very reasonable price. Pitt students get in free too! We spent over 4 hours there and didn't even see everything. We ate at the Fossil Fuels Cafe and thought the pricing was reasonable. Great displays and information - I would definitely go back when in the area.

By Grey C |

it is an easy flow from the Museum of Art into the Natural History Museum and very worthwhile, especially if you have been boring the children with all the time you spend viewing paintings and sculpture that they do not like. It is a fine collection of objects even though some of the works are merely reproductions of works held elsewhere, especially the Egyptian pieces.

By CPA Dave |

I enjoyed seeing art from Monet, van Gough and other impressionist. It's nice that the photography is permitted. Impressive dinosaur exhibit too. Price is only $10 after 3pm.

By AlvaroECarvajal@yahoo.com |

Extraordinary fossils collection. Nice set up with lots of children and young adult exhibits.
Only one day here, but I have could spent several days .

By Thomas M |

The dinosaur exhibits are the best I’ve ever seen. There is a currently a fabulous special exhibit on dinosaur armor.

By David D |

This is a tremendous museum. It is obvious that Mr. Carnegie and his foundation spared and spares no expense in their pursuit of excellence. From ancient Egypt to even more ancient tar pits, every section demonstrates the concept of going beyond the norm.

The dioramas are astounding. The individual items on display are clearly identified and explained. And there are a lot of them! The interactive panels are intuitive - and they actually work! There is enough variety and interest in the exhibits to cover a wide range of ages. We saw a lot of thoroughly entralled young children.

We made the mistake of starting later in the day, so there was no way we could make it through the entire place without seriously skimming over a lot of the material. Truthfully, I'm not sure one could make it through everything - and give it all the justice it deserves - even given an entire day. Needless to say, I plan on returning one day.

I've done New York, Chicago, Washington, and a few large university natural history museums, and I do not remember being this impressed with any of them. Like I said, this is a tremendous museum.

By Jenny_from_PA |

We spent a good part of an afternoon here as it really is a large museum. The gems and minerals room was exceptional, and the dinosaurs were great too. Many other areas felt like they had not had been updated since the 1980’s

By Brandy E |

Great way to spend a day. Has something for every age, plus specific kid friendly activity areas. Located in University area, with many beautiful buildings nearby. Room of sculpture casts is really interesting.

By tarao533 |

When ever the work day is getting me down I can run across the street to take in some art, or some natural history. I love this museum, and smile everytime I see our dinosaurs in a movie (Silence of the Lambs). I loved coming her as a child and even more so as an adult.

By Cathy |

I did not know until recently how renowned the dinosaur exhibit was. All I knew as a kid was that it was really 😎 cool!
I think of that exhibit when I see the Curious George story...

By Manningjen |

Thought the dinosaurs would be the main attraction, but the 10-year Minecraft fan really likes the rocks! This is a joint ticket with the art museum & the buildings are connected

By Chelsea H |

Very interesting museum! I was never a huge dinosaur person, so I actually learned a lot.

Other than the dinos, my kids were kind of bored. But to be fair- we had been at the zoo all day, a lot of kid things/hands-on exhibits were closed (thanks COVID) and honestly, do kids really even enjoy museums? LOL

Unfortunately, we did not have a chance to see everything because they were closing. There were some areas I would have liked to have seen. We were there for an hour and a half so I'd allow at least 2 hours.

By ERIC S |

What a beautiful building inside and out. The original part of the building dates back to mid-1850 if my memory serves me right. It is the most impressive to me because of the construction material. I do not believe buildings nowadays could be built to this level of opulence. The exhibits within the building do not fall short by any means either. The collection is well laid out and beautifully maintained. There were school tours being conducted, but it did not at all hinder the experience because of the true professionalism of the museum staff. The entire staff within the museum is professional and extremely well-educated. So much to see, I will have to visit again when up in the "Burgh" next visit.

By Susan P |

Allow more time than you anticipated, Especially if you are going to visit the art museum as well. We arrived in the afternoon and ended up splitting up so we could concentrate on what was all of the most interest. For me that is the birds. Sadly there are a number of taxidermy specimens of the extinct. My husband spent his quality time with the Egyptian exhibit. This museum is in the older section of the main building and even the elevators display their age well. It is well organized and maps are available. If you have walking issues be prepared to cover plenty of territory. There are many benches but also so much to see.

By CharlieS |

I personally like visiting natural history museums for my work involving in the theory of evolution. Each time when I visited this kind of museum, I would connect those fossil I see with my scientist instinct, which is always kind of fun. This museum is definitely a top one.

By Kailey P |

Interesting exhibits . . lots to see . . kept clean and tidy. Very enjoyable for a small family outing.

By Cleverland |

I was not aware of the history of Pittsburgh and the many innovators that are from there. You start at the bottom and work your way up. I’m not sure if it’s a temporary exhibit but the Vietnam War exhibit was excellent. We spent an hour in that part alone before moving upstairs. Though I’m not a fan of the sports teams it includes many sports from high school through the pros. The curator put a lot of thought into the presentation. You learn a lot and there are a few activities that the kids loved. As you continue through the museum you learn about Heinz, Mr. Rogers, slavery, the evolution of glass, and transportation. This is a Pittsburgh gem.

By Boris Vinogradsky, MD |

One word. Fantastic. On par with Washington DC Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Two highlights - the Dinosaur Exhibit and the Mineral Exhibit are out of this world. We did not have enough time to see everything.

By Mike B |

This place is simply awesome. I'm from Pittsburgh, but I have not lived here since 1970. Since then, the museum has gone through a total renovation inside. Most of the old exhibits are still there, including the lion attacking the man on the camel, which was my favorite as a kid. The hall of architecture and sculptures are still there, and the dinosaurs too. There's a polar exhibit, indians, Egypt, mammals, you name it. Admission is not cheap, but there are discounts available. Do it.

By lindadwl |

My daughter loves dinosaurs and never gets tired seeing them at the Carnegie Museum. The museum is spacious and has many things to learn about and see.

By ephesians5 |

The admission to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History includes the Museum of Art, which is a good deal. The two museums are housed in the same building on opposite wings.
There is a lot to see in this museum. The mineral and gem collection is impressive and quite extensive with some very beautiful pieces and could spend an hour in this area. The dinosaur exhibit contains about 75% of original fossils displayed in detailed reconstruction of environments in which they lived in. The Bone Hunter's Quarry is a child favourite area to uncover fossils using brushes and chisels.

The Hall of Native American have life sized and life like human mannequins representing different aspects of their lives, as well as a diverse collection of artifacts for the different peoples groups.

The Polar world, teaches how the Canadian Inuits adapted to their environment with beautiful displays and life size recreations.

The dioramas for the different wild life groups are very impressive with realistic animal's dynamic poses and detailed recreation of their habitats. The Botany Hall recreates several biomes in the U.S. and displays diversity of plants.

For the young kids, the Discovery Basecamp is a hands-on gallery to touch, explore and play based learning.

Overall, this museum is very high quality with attention to details and contains very special collections. We would consider among the best Natural History Museum in North America.

By Dawn M |

I live near the Smithsonian Natural History Museum so I wasn't expecting much in comparison. Boy was I wrong. Their minerals and gem collection is fantastic! Also, their fossils and dinosaur exhibit was among the best.

My only complaint was how hard it was to get out of the building from there. Had to ask directions twice.

By Zorin P |

This place is educational... it’s awesome... The nature section has the most awesome historical info about mummies, native indian and T-rex bones!!! Rad right! :)

By Maria |

This museum is just perfect. It’s my favorite place to just come and let yourself unplug and relax. Some times we do just the history side, sometimes we do just the art side. The store is great, the restaurants are great. There’s security all around if you need anything- they’re also super helpful with advice on what to see and do. The library attached is another immense asset to this wonderful gem. It’s an all-around great place!

By erodrig26 |

Stopped by to specifically see the Egyptian part of the museum. The collection is one of the better ones that I have seen. We also went through the dioramas of the animals from the various areas. There is so much between this and the art museum that you could spend a whole day here.

By Ralph Wise |

Outstanding! As a member with a dual membership I was able to get my sister in for free.Went to visit the T-rex dinisours and the billion dollar gem stone collection.Everything was great as usual.Great experience.

By Augustw02 |

Really cool exhibits and a decently large museum, could take a whole day to go through if you want to be thorough. Would definitely visit again.

By eirebuff |

We spent several hours at the museum and decided to try out the Fossil Fuels Cafe there. We walked in and there was some food in the warmers but no menu signs or idea of how much food was or how it was purchased. Two employees behind the counter were engaged in conversation and seemed disinterested in helping so we just walked out.

By micndav |

There is something for everyone is this amazing museum! From dinosaurs, to birds, to Native Americans, to Egyptian artifacts, you and your family will have plenty of things to see and experience.

By Randi L |

Great family experience. Something for everyone, lots of interesting exhipits.Great food. Clean and friendly employees.

By GoPlacesJudie |

This was a wonderful museum.. I went for the dinosaurs, but loved the mineral and gem room. there was also an art museum but we spent the morning at the Phipps conservatory and ran out of time

By Scouternurse S |

a nice clean museum...loved the gems and minerals displays....also were really surprised by the extensive well designed dinosaur presentation.
the building is clean; but a bit confusing in its layout; we suddenly found ourselves in the art museuem and had to be shown how to get back to the actual history side of the museum....

we're just two seniors but found it fun; kids would really enjoy this, we think

By SMK |

The museum contains everything you would expect to see in a standard natural history museum, but what I liked about it the most is the "quietness". Most other natural history museums I have been too were too crowded and noisy, I think mainly because admission was free. For this one, there is a small charge for admission.

By Travelswithkids17 |

One of our favorite museums to check out dino fossils. Awesome displays and we even got to hold a fossil. The museum offers a ton of discounts ... make sure to check.

By achristy2018 |

This is an excellent museum. The minerals and gems, dinosaurs and Access Ability (temporary) exhibits were particularly impressive. It is interesting for children and adults and makes a good museum day when combined with the art museum.

By Bobby Parise |

A very cool museum that I love. I personally like this museum because so many of the exhibits are life-size and let you feel like you’re there rather than looking at a picture or something through glass! A very unique experience good for all ages!

If I had kids in Pittsburgh the children’s museum is the number one place I would take them, this is number two, and the science center is number three

All great places but that’s the order I would go!

By Tim W |

We visited Carnegie Museum of Natural History to see the gorgeous Italian Presipio (a Neapolitan "Nativity" scene dating to the 1700's) along with the various art inspired Christmas trees. The highlight, however, was the 50 Greatest Wild Life Photographs from National Geographic, which are stunningly beautiful. While there, don't miss the highlighted still life paintings in Gallery One of the Art Museum, along with the Jasper Johns retrospective in one of the main galleries. The Heinz Architectural Hall has a nice display of drawings by Lina Bo Bova (?). Lunch in Carnegie Café was a tasty delight.

By Susan P |

Spent an afternoon at the museum and really enjoyed many of the exhibits - best was the dinosaurs. I was really interested in seeing the Reptiles Live exhibit, but not so interested in paying extra so we skipped that. Overall, a great place for couples, families, and friends.

By Jlundg5413 |

A fantastic blend of natural history and modern art. The ticket is a combo for both Art and Natural History Museum. Great for small children as well.

By Roving812186 |

Very good, the American Indian exhibit was the best part, we did it at the end so we didn't have as much time as we would have liked.

By tosl |

The dinosaur exhibit alone makes this museum a must-see, but it is also attached to the art museum (same ticket). With so few crowds due to the pandemic, we spent the entire afternoon here. The staff is friendly and the museum was careful about safety.
Parking was simple. Besides the dinosaurs, they had good displays on native cultures as well as insects. It will be better when all the interactives are once again available.

By jmbamd2017 |

Amazing place to spend quality time with the family, Awesome Davinci exposition when we were there, Is a must go, do not miss it

By smurtland17 |

Wear comfortable shoes and allot a few hours for this attraction. There is so much to see. The dinosaur specimens and the rock/mineral specimens are excellent! It's all very well done and worth the price of admission.

By pfefmeister |

This museum is included when you pay for the art museum. It is confusing when you look at the floor map they give you. I suggest doing all the floors of the art museum from the top down, the same with the history museum. Don’t try to walk between the two - too confusing. Liked the dinosaur exhibit and the bird hall, as well as the minerals and mammals of Africa and America. Great place for kids.

By JeffreyR411911 |

Excellent displays with good spacing between them, large halls for social-distancing or crowds, bench seating in each hall section for rests or the weary, and reasonable entry fees for all with special pricing for seniors, children, tours, etc.

By David O |

the other being at the Natural History Museum in NYC. Definitely good for kids. You can park for free, just look.

By Hank956 |

It was nice to have this museum for people that love nature.

Great exhibits.

Came early today and there were no crowds.
Definitely do when kids are in school, did not experience any groups today.

Was thoroughly fascinated.

By Bill D |

We visited here recently with a group of family and friends. The museum is nothing short of spectacular with iconic dinosaurs (in most cases, the real thing from the museum's own research work), spectacular minerals, and mammal dioramas that are historic but still impressive. As we entered the Polar World hall, everyone began commenting that they must keep the hall frigid to give you a sense of the environment. By the time we got to the American Indian Hall, it was clear that there was something amiss. The hall was frigid, there was a really bad smell permeating everything, and at the back of the hall there was a device for catching water leaking from the roof. By the time we hastily exited the hall, we were all nearly frozen. This marred what was an otherwise terrific visit. The food in the on-site restaurant was far better than what one finds in most such venues.

By Khoi N |

Loved this museum. You have a great combination of exhibits ranging from dinosaurs, mummys, reptiles, architect, and some new ones as well. The museum admission fee is fairly priced. It may take up to 2 hours to see everything. If you have children this is a great spot to take them as there are some interactive exhibits as well.

By Stingaroo |

First time I've been back and years, and the renovation is incredible....First notion is the cost is high but then as you walk through you realize you got your money worth. This is an excellent place to go solo, with friends, a date, or family with children. Make sure you grab a map to help yourself around. ALSO...HINT....YOU PAY FOR PARKING AS YOU LEAVE THE PARKING LOT AND THE MACHINE ONLY TAKES CARDS, IF YOU WANT TO PAY CASH YOU HAVE TO HAVE YOUR STUB AND PAY FOR IT INSIDE THE MUSEUM BEFORE YOU LEAVE. WE SPEND ABOUT 3 HOURS AND IT COST 7.00. Vending mahines for soda is really expensive so be warned lol.

By Chelsea M |

This is a fantastic museum!  I knew it was going to be cool, but this place exceeded out expectations.  Our young sons loved the dinosaur exhibit and pretty much everywhere we took them in this place.  Honestly, as an adult I want to go back and just spend the entire day there.  It's definitely worth the visit and money!

By viva_la_azurri |

Worth a visit if only for the dinosaurs!!! And I am not even particularly partial to natural history museums.

By fluffnfold |

My spouse and I visited the Carnegie Museum of Natural History (abbreviated at CMNH) on a Sunday afternoon in late August 2019. The CMNH is open from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm on Wednesdays through Mondays (closed on Tuesdays), with extended evening hours until 8:00 pm on Thursdays. Admission to the CMNH also provides access to the adjacent Carnegie Museum of Art (CMOA) (see our separate review).

The Carnegie Museum of Natural History is located in Pittsburgh’s East End/Oakland neighborhood, within walking distance of the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). On-site parking is available, as well as a museum store and restaurants (Cafe Carnegie [see our separate review] and the Fossil Fuels Café). Complimentary docent-led tours are offered throughout the day. Restrooms and coat check/lockers (which require one quarter to use) are also on-site.

Pittsburgh industrialist Andrew Carnegie founded the CMNH in 1896. Its collection includes over 22 million specimens, although only 10,000 of them are on view at any one time. The CMNH is considered one of the top five natural history museums in the country and the third largest collection of mounted displayed dinosaurs (only DC’s Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and NYC’s American Museum of Natural History have more). Be sure to visit the displays on the American Indian, polar world, ancient Egypt, geology, minerals and gems, and birds.

We enjoyed our day visiting the Carnegie Museum of Art and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. We first visited the CMOA in the morning, ate lunch in the full-service Café Carnegie (which provided a great respite during a day of touring), then spent an enjoyable afternoon in the CMNH. Highly recommended!

By poetessktj1 |

This museum was interesting but not as extensive in certain areas as one would have liked. The geological area and dinosaur areas were good, but less interactive for older visitors than it is for young children. All in all a good visit though and a good value for the admission, which allows access to four museums.

By Larry C |

One of the best museums not only in Pennsylvania but the country. Has multiple levels and will take you pretty much the entire day to go through.

By CloseToHomeblog |

Carnegie really did a service for Pittsburg. So many amazing museums and collections here. From DINOS to art work, you can easily spend several hours. We had a docent tour and it was great to see the museum in the limited time we had.

By Brian H |

Wonderful. The only drawback was lack of working outlets to recharge phones. Staff was extremely helpful. Restrooms were clean. Displays were informative. Solid experience overall.

By foodisourlife |

The layout of this museum is horrible. The exhibits were nice but it was a challenge to navigate through crowds. The Natural History museums in Washington DC and NYC were much better.

By Tkdgal41767 |

Second time chaperoning a 6th grade field trip. Great place to visit, so much to see, the students were amazed with everything, they especially liked the gem room, as did I. The gift shop is really neat and not too over priced. Friendly staff, highly recommend for a school field trip or a day out with family. Don't forget to bring extra pennies and quarters for the penny smashing machine, as it is always cool!

By yxcgvhjkl |

I took my kids here. We had a fantastic afternoon. Besides I enjoyed the quiet atmosphere and very informative exhibition. If you want to encounter with dinosaurs way beyond Jurassic park that’s a great place to go.

By 907blaked |

Some in our group thought this was a five-star attraction, while others thought it was a four-star attraction. Regardless, there was a wide variety of things to see. The gems and minerals were particularly nice, and the crowds for that kind of exhibit were nowhere near the levels at the Washington DC natural history Museum. The animal exhibits were good, particularly the bird hall. The bug display was also nice. We were underwhelmed by the Arctic life and the jewelry exhibits. The Hall of architecture was nice, but once you realize that everything is a cast, it becomes a little less impressive. The Hall of miniatures was pretty cool, even if small. We spent about 1 hour and 45 minutes total here, in addition to the one hour and 45 minutes we first spent at the art museum. I liked that the admission ticket gave us access to both the art and the natural history museums for one price.

We were looking forward to seeing the Christmas trees and the beautiful Italian Nativity scene only to find out that we had to walk all the way down to the art museum and up several floors , where the nativity was practically hidden in the farthest room in the gallery!! I asked several workers why it was moved and got several very lame answers!! It is Christmas, so why would you not have that beautiful depiction of Christmas front and center as it always was!!! If the art gallery needs to attract more visitors I don’t think they should do it at the inconvenience of the patrons of the museum!! The Tree room is very empty without its most cherished treasure!
Very disappointing!

The museum had many interesting artifacts. We especially enjoyed the dinosaurs and architectural room. Lots of hands on experiences for both kids and adults.

By futtock21 |

Four floors of stimulation from fossils, model dinosaurs and reptiles, dioramas of wildlife, stuffed birds, botany, flora and fauna, not to mention a special exhibition portraying animals, including the human one, as machines. Plenty of interactive and immersive exhibits for children and adults alike..

By Dasha |

The collection at the Museum was not what one would expect from a museum of such caliber. Also, not every floor had bathrooms, and we asked staff about the nearest bathroom, they send us to one on the second floor even though the access to it was using the stairs (and my husband was on a wheelchair). The only accessible bathroom was on the ground floor.
There is also poor signage throughout the museum without clear directions pointing to various exhibits.
If you are in Pittsburgh, spend your time somewhere else.

A fun day for all! Great interactive exhibits. Really nice and reasonable gift shop. The only two disappointing things were parking is expensive and the Cafe at Carnegie is a lot smaller than I expected for all the hyper over the James Beard finalist restaurant. There was a private event so you can only eat by the bar and it was a limited menu. I had my 5 year old niece and that was not acceptable.

By blackjackmarcy |

This museum was laid out offering both a museum of natural history and art. We spent several hours in the museum and will go back again. Well worth the tip.

By Benzboy06 |

For the price you pay to get into the museum, you get a lot for you buck. Before we went in we said we would only spend 3 hours as we get bored fairly easily; however, I could have stayed longer. While they have a café we wanted something more sustaining so we did cut our tour at 3 hours and went to eat.

I loved the Natural History (animals, dinosaurs, etc) exhibition. There was so much to see that I could have spent the entire time here but my husband loves art so we had to split up the time between that and the art gallery.

There was some amazing art but I realized that I have no understanding of modern art. A blue dot on white canvas, what the heck is that? Oh right, it's art. To each their own I guess.

Anyway, we loved the museum and recommend that everyone go here at least once.

I had the opportunity to visit this beautiful museum that I had not seen since the late 1970's. This museum contains both Natural History and Art exhibits. There are huge dinosaur displays, American Indian History exhibits, a Hall of Sculptures, paintings, interactive area where children can dig for bones, touch fur, preserved animals, etc. There is another area where you can watch people who have worked with archeology tools, etc. I especially liked the rooms with gems from other countries and precious jewels.
The gift shops are nice and there is even a cafe at the museum. There is parking behind the museum{$10} and nearby on street parking. Staff was friendly. Admission was reasonably priced , Would highly recommend for children and adults. There are many benches to rest inside as well as elevators. We were there over 3 hours and didnt see everything so adults probably need 4 hours.

By StigJim |

As I mentioned in my review of the attached article museum the only problem with these two gems is that there is an incredible amount to take in in one visit. There is a wide variety throughout the museum, so it seems like there is some for everyone.

By GoeieWitte |

Visited the renewed Hillman Hall of Minerals. Convenient on-site parking ($$) and access to the museum.
Contactless check in via internet and smart phone. Signage helps navigating the buildings and rooms.
The mineral hall is spacious with attractive displays and mineral specimens. The mirrored 360 walk around displays area literally adds a dimension to the whole exhibition.
Pleased to see Pennsylvania highlights and connection with Pittsburgh' s industrial past and mineral resources.

By Holms11 |

I visited here 15 years ago. I enjoyed at that time. Though almost all the exhibitions have not changed, I enjoyed again.

It is attached to art museum. Going out, I almost lost my way.... Some signs or indications must be needed.

By kimlovesfl |

We had a couple of hours to spare before meeting a friend for lunch across the street. I wanted to revisit a childhood favorite-the dinosaurs and fossils! There is a new location (new for me, anyway), and it was wonderful and interesting, but the best part was a National Geographic exhibit on the 50 best wildlife photos.

By princepn |

My wife and I spent a Sunday afternoon exploring the many interesting exhibits and enjoyed ourselves. Will return.

By toddone1 |

This museum is historic and probably one of the best in the country for dinosaurs and rocks and gems. I came here with my wife and young son and we were blown away by the amount of rocks and gems on display. The dinosaur exhibits are the best we have EVER seen - they have full REFERENCE skeletons for several dinosaurs including the T. Rex, Triceratops, and Pteranodon. The dioramas of various nature scenes are amazing and lovingly built. Price of entry is VERY reasonable, and they have 2 pretty good places to eat. We did not get time to see the art museum, and we went through the pretty decent gift shop quickly. If you have limited time - go to the dinosaur exhibits FIRST!

By vikendall |

One of the best museums in Pittsburg. Children of all ages will love this place. Took my son and grandson. Not a dull moment.

By retireey |

You could live here, prowl the display rooms, tinker in the shop rooms, talk with the animals, then sleep under a bench.

By Indysadie1957 |

We were in Pittsburgh for a couple days and decided to go to the Museum. This was the best part of the trip! It is a wonderful place full of things to see! We had the pleasure of meeting Marijude, a delightful employee who was very knowledgeable and told us some great history! You could tell she loved the place! It is a must see if you are in the area! We enjoyed this place so much! Kudos to the CMNH!!!!!

By Shane P |

Went for the dinosaurs and they did not disappoint. This a huge museum. It was crowded, but since the museum is so large, the large number of visitors was not an issue. We also loved the Hall of African Wildlife, Hall of North American Wildlife, Age of Mammals, Hall of Arctic Life, and Hall of American Indians. All of the displays are extremely well done. There is also an huge and impressive looking gem and mineral display, but since we weren't too interested, we quickly walked past it. An art museum is adjacent to this museum, but the displays I saw through the glass looked to be all modern art, and this did not entice us to enter, so cannot really comment. Would definitely go back again if in the area, just for the dinosaurs.

By MontrealMan |

I expected more for a $25 admission. While this arts and natural history complex is impressive from the beauty of its architecture and fine exterior, the exhibits the, selves were somewhat disappointing, disorganized and dated. The layout is confusing and it’s tricky to move from the natural history exhibits to the arts areas. The modern art collections were average, and while there are some high quality French Impressionists, this museum has room for improvement. One positive note is that for kids, the museum does offer some interesting educational exhibits, plus the museum shop is interesting. If you are looking for an indoor activity, it’s not a bad option, but I do not plan to return.

By Traveledfar2015 |

The vast collections in all the Halls (Minerals,Gems, Fossils,Ornithology, Mammals, Anthropology, Architecture, Statuary) deserve repeat visits. Wear comfy shoes. Don't expect to be able to do all the sections in one visit. Know that even "permanent" exhibits will have treasured materials from the extensive archives displayed to fascinate each time you visit.

Do bring your camera! Selfies with dinosaurs are a must. The museum is a time
traveler's dream from earliest periods through present. Exhibits are so well presented--informative for all ages. There are many hands-on activities including a "dig" to excavate dinosaur bones. You can also watch technicians preparing specimen.

Do visit the museum website before the visit to help plan your day. Exhibits are so well presented--informative for all ages. There are many hands-on activities including a "dig" to excavate dinosaur bones. You can also watch technicians preparing specimen.

Entry fee includes the Museum of Art, also most excellent. All areas are wheelchair friendly and strollers are allowed. Parking is on site. In addition to the cafe and sit down restaurant on the main level of the Museum of Art, find your way to a basement cafe favored by staff, students, and families that has quick, inexpensive lunch items.

Lucky local residents enjoy repeat visits with special interest lectures, classes, children's night in the museum "sleep overs," and special exhibits such as the current fascinating Live Reptiles.

By vegas rocks |

we loved the mineral section of the museum as well as the spectacular dinosaur collection. There are soooo many different types of dinos and the guides are so well versed in their dialogue telling about the history of each one of them. The upper floors have nice displays of wildlife as well as Alaskan and Arctic artifacts. You can get a free tour at 2 pm starting at the hall before entering the dinosaur section. If you have a Bank of America credit card there is no entry fee on the 1st weekend of every month which is also at most museums countrywide.

By john m |

great museum. we enjoyed the gem, natural animals, architectural and Indian exhibits the best. Plan on spending 2 to 3 hours

By Charles L |

This is easily a two hour event. Come ready eager to learn. You’ll be continually surprised by exhibits. Due to Covid most people weren’t there. We had a lot of exhibits to our own. What an awesome experience!

By Shelly H |

This museum is fantastic! Starting with the crystals and gems, through the amazing dinosaurs and the animal exhibits, I was amazed at every new area. I highly recommend visiting this museum.

By lonk55 |

Attached to the art museum (same admission) great prehistoric and Roman/Egyptian exhibits, but the showstopper was the most incredible collection of rocks and minerals I’ve ever seen. I could have spent hours there.

By TBrev |

This is a very good museum, both for the natural history and for the art and architecture. The large architecture room with casts of various cathedral doors and other building details was amazing. The art gallery has a really great collection of Impressionist and modern art. I was delighted to see an Edvard Munch outside of Norway.

By craig j |

We only had one day so we only saw part of this huge museum. We really liked the minerals and gems area, we spend a lot of time there. This museum is great for kids. Very informative and lots of interactive areas.

By anonymoustravis |

What else can I say? The Dinos were seriously impressive. But I think our favorite was the hall of gems and minerals. There are so many different geodes and phosphorescent gems that truly wowed us. Don't miss the cafe which had some really great food options.

By Kamara |

We came to Pittsburgh for the weekend and had a few hours to fill before meeting our group. We decided to visit the Museum. It is Huge! There are so many rooms with such a variety of topics! My favorite was the dinosaurs and their habitats! It was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon!

By chris a |

We went here during a rainy day, sure am glad we did! The minerals exhibit is incredible, the dinosaurs are awesome, and we got to see bits and pieces of other parts. It's free, it's a great place to see something new, learn something new, and all in all, it was a good time with my friends (adult kids). I will definitely go back, there is so much more to see!!

By jtoski |

Most eye catching room was the European casts of architectural wonders. Many pieces we’ve seen in the Louvre and British Museum. Makes high art accessible. Dinos were also cool. We enjoyed all the bird exhibits. My 9 year old enjoyed the legos in the architecture exhibit.

By Watsson |

The Natural History and Art museums share this building and even some of the floors. Our focus was the Natural History sections. The Inuit exhibit is first rate. We loved the African and North American animal diaramas. The dinosaur exhibit, though small is nonetheless top notch. The corrider with the birds is very interesting. And the exhibit on the environment is fabulous. All in all this was an afternoon well-spent.

By Meg W |

I don’t love natural history museums but I do think this has a ton to offer people who do or children who aren’t sure. There were a lot of children very excited to be there.
(The architecture exhibit here, which we sought out, did not meet our expectations.
The taxidermy of a camel being attacked by lions is great.
There are plenty of other taxidermied creatures and dinosaur bones and ancient architecture but the highlight for us was the exhibit “We Are Nature: Living in the Anthropocene.” It is important information presented in a very thought-provoking manner. It is on display through September 3, 2018.
The neighborhood is lovely. We got sandwiches in the little neighborhood up the street and took them to a nearby park to eat.

By Steve C |

We rode our bikes along the Eliza Furnace Trail and then took another trail to the left (you can download the route via several Pittsburgh trails websites) to a trail that runs uphill along the south end of Shenley Park to Boundary Road. The museum is one of the best in the world! They have dinosaurs and geology from some of the world's premiere excavations. And they have an absolutely amazing section on prehistoric people. But the thing that really blew us away was that they also have an extensive section of paintings from classic to modern, including a Monet and a Jackson Pollack. It half price after three! Combine this with a visit to the nearby Art Deco pillar, Cathedral of Learning, which you can't miss You don't need to go inside because it's really just University of Pitt Classroom, but it's worth a look-see from the outside, along with the Heinz Memorial Chapel. We rode our bikes back into town on Fifth Avenue (all downhill!)

By Jared H |

By far one of the best museums in the United States. Excellent exhibits. For one price you get to see the history and the art. This is one of the most worthwhile spots in Pittsburgh to visit. It is great for literally anyone and has something everyone will enjoy. It is so big you could spend the entire day, I could spend days there if I had the time.

By Quattraporte M |

For the region, this is a good museum. The young explorer was excited to get out of the house during the deep freeze to visit the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. He was not disappointed. There is an excellent collection of dinosaurs. The majority are original fossils. It was incredible to see so many skeletons in one exhibit. The only other place I have seen an extensive dinosaur display was at the Natural History Museum in London. The Egyptian Artifacts were limited and really not exciting. The other star of the museum was the spectacular gem collection. On display were gems from around the world. There was enough descriptive information to make the exhibit informative, engaging and educational. If you are pressed for time or have guests with limited time or attention span, the gem collection and dinosaur exhibit should be exciting enough for the visit.
The ticket allows you to access to the Art Museum as well at no additional price. I found the French Impressionist Gallery a pleasant surprise and a joy to experience. Stunning works by the masters: Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, Degas, and Matisse are a delight to view up close. Post Impressionist and Expressionist art by Van Gogh ( Wheat Fields After the Rain), Gaugin, Kirchner, and Munch is also displayed.
Covid precautions are strictly enforced. Timed tickets with online reservations allow limited number of people in the building. Temperature checks are done upon entering and masks are mandatory for all. Best to go early. No food is availabe, so pack a lunch. You can keep the bag in a locker ( rent 50 cents). The Fossil Cafe has tables and can be used by families to eat their packed lunches inside.
Overall, a wonderful experience for the entire family.

By MsBarbara079 |

We truly enjoyed the museum. Amazing dinosaur collection and beautiful art work from many of the masters.

By Sue K |

Two museums in one with art and natural history on differing floors. Got to touch a real dinosaur bone and a rock from Mars...how cool is that? Several of the dino skeletons are real and not casts. World class museum with convenient parking lot.

By 9AlexaMPC |

This was a great museum. It had everything you could want, dinosaur bones, Egyptian artifacts, Ancient civilizations, animals, and gems. It was very informative with several hands-on exhibits and great fun.

By RCM |

We took our children ages 3 and 7 to this museum, especially for the 3 year old to see the dinosaur exhibit. I fully expected that we would only be there an hour or two; however, we were there for several and didn't see everything! If you are a teacher, there is a big discount on tickets as well. That made our visit all the more enjoyable!

By Onlinemother |

My family of four spent the better part our day exploring the museum of natural history and loved it! The crystal exhibit is absolutely amazing. I could have spent the entire day in there! We were also impressed with the dinosaur exhibit as well as the hall of architecture. Great for all ages!

By Samuel O |

Always interesting to visit this museum. This was my third or fourth time visiting. You always see something you missed in a previous visit.

By Kats1986 |

Nice hands on museum mostly for mid teens and younger. But we went primarily to see the Largest LEGO Sculpture Display in the World. Absolutely amazing! Life size people, 2D and 3D art work. WELL worth seeing it. My teen son, who has played with LEGOs all his life thoroughly enjoyed the art and science of the exhibit. The science museum was interesting and we enjoyed the free Science presentation, but missed the free Buhl planetarium presentations. A great day trip with plenty to do.

By bdalessandris9 |

The Hall of the Dinosaurs is a dream trip for all children who are facinated by the size and splendor of a T-rex and want to sit inside a footprint of an ancient giant. The Gem and Crystal collection is gorgeous, and all kids delight in the fossil hunter experience as they scrape and brush away debris to uncover a dinosaur tail, a skeleton that allows them to feel like a junior archeologist. After 3 hours, my 8 year old granddaughter felt like a scientist!

By Mairmi01 |

This museum is excellent. The animal settings are very realistic, and the attention to detail is fantastic. Allow a lot of time to enjoy.

By Mark P |

This is a great museum which offers a fine experience for people with expertise in areas of focus(minerals, dinosaurs, birds and bugs, among other subjects) and those without such expertise. The collection is massive, and the exhibits are thoughtfully displayed and explained.

By sanju_222323 |

It is in the same building (art museum), you just pass through the hall and you are in the history section. It is one of 4 Carnegie Institute museums located in Pittsburgh. If you love dinosaurs, nature, wildlife, and history, then this is definitely the one to put near the top of your bucket list.

The museum's central exhibit is a collection of authentic dinosaur fossils and some reproductions, including a Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops. most well known for its expansive dinosaur fossil collection, an impressive 1300+ piece mineral, and gem collection, and dozens of realistic dioramas spotlighting wildlife in North America and Africa

One of the finest collections and displays of gems and minerals in the world can be found at CMNH.

Entry fee: Adults $19.95, children 3-18 $11.95, under 2 free. At the same fee, you can also see an art museum.
Parking: We did street side parking, its free on Sunday

By chuck21Scottsdale |

From childhood to adult, this museum has not lost its splendor. It is as fascinating today as it was 60 years ago.Still the best T-Rex anywhere.

By 無名 |

...to spend a few hours learning about dinosaurs. We took a two year-old, and he was real excited about it all. I on the other hand am kinda indifferent about dinosaurs; I do remember Dino from the Flintstones though. I was chasing the kid around which was fun in an of itself. They have big room for the kids where they were all playing with the dinosaur toys. Nice family scene which I'm really not accustomed to.

By 660cr |

The Carnegie offers exhibits of art, science, interaction science exhibits and a fantastic model train set up. Adults and children can spend hours in this museum and not get tired of viewing. If in Pittsburgh do not miss this museum

By WatercolorPainter |

This museum is a must see. The Gem and Crystal portion of the museum is incredible. It hosts many specimens from around the world and each specimen is spectacular .
The historic portion of the museum contains an outstanding Egyptian exhibit, an Alaskan exhibit, as well as many many other excellent exhibits .
This museum is an absolute must see.

By Hgtravl |

What a charming museum! While in Pittsburgh, this was a must on our list! Easy parking (large parking lot right at the museum) and easy to navigate laid out museum, we enjoyed our stay! It’s located in the most beautiful historic building which itself is full of history! Lots of stunning hallways, grand halls & exhibits fill this museum. The tickets also grant you access to the art museum which is connected. We spent a solid 3 hours here and felt like there was so much more to see! Some of our faves were the dinosaurs (learned they are real not re created fossils) and the stunning grand hall. They also have clean restrooms and a beautiful gift shop!

By misopiso88 |

I was visiting Pittsburgh and decided to spend the day at the Museum of Art and Museum of Natural History. I was pleasantly surprised that one ticket got me admission to BOTH. Terrific exhibits and lovely architecture. Highly recommend!

By Sam B |

My girlfriend and I had occasion to visit this attraction during my visit to Pittsburgh. Many displays of minerals, birds, other animals and dinosaurs. Although my favorites were the American Indian and Alaskan Peoples areas. We took our time and thoroughly enjoyed it. Well Done!

By Cpwee |

Very decent museum with interesting exhibits - from dinosaurs, minerals, stones to reptiles. There’s a huge activity space for kids to play too.

By 2017D |

Grandson wanted to see dinosaur bones, he wasn't disappointed however I was the Egyptian room was closed.
We spent about 3 hours in the museum.
The people were nice except for the servers in the Cafe area. They were very rude talking bad about people right in front of them.

By Cphym |

Well done, educational and entertaining. I’m no kid but is learned so much! Exhibits are well done and the explanations are clear and helpful.

By confused999 |

This museum is a MUST for visitors to this city particularly those with children. There are somany interesting displays that to single outone would be inexcusable.

By ellen804207 |

We've been here before we love the first floor which has the dinosaur exhibits. My 6 yr old wasnt a fan of the rest of the museum which is basically a bunch of dead stuffed animals.

By Galeda |

My husband and I visited the Carnegie Museum of Natural History last fall and had a lovely visit!

It’s such a plus that the museum is connected to the Carnegie Library and the Carnegie Museum of Art. There is ample safe parking (with a small fee) and it’s easy to navigate to the museum campus via car. From the museums, there is easy walking access to all the sites in the university district (University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie-Mellon). Like all downtowns, there are many one-way streets and higher-traffic areas; Google Maps was our friend. The museums are in a very clean and safe neighborhood.

Because the Natural History and Art museums are connected, the facility map is a little confusing. Color-coding the areas (especially on the second floor) would assist the first-time visitor. However, there are many docents throughout both museums, and they are extremely friendly and helpful; don’t hesitate to ask them for directions or to answer any questions you might have.

Quotes from the community hang along the stairs from the entrance to the admission desk: “I want a museum that. . . .” They were inspiring and very thought-provoking.
The building is a beautiful ornate facility that was built as a museum, so the exhibit areas are well-planned and fit the items displayed. The wonderful architecture enhances the immersive experience of touring the different areas of natural history and art that are presented.

There are so many wonderful exhibits that it would be impossible to list them all, but here are some highlights:
--the dioramas of the animals from all over the world (especially the Arctic and African exhibits)
--the minerals hall with gems and other precious stones
--Native American displays
--Dinosaurs! There is a fine collection of fossils including the reconstructions of several dinos (Tyrannosaurus rex, Plesiosaur, Quetzalcoatl, Brontosaurus)
--The hall of architecture, with full-size pieces collected from around the world
The hall of insects was unfortunately closed during our visit.

We spent several hours in the museum and still felt like there was more to see. It was definitely a highlight of our trip, and we’ll be back on our next visit to Pittsburgh!

By Manningjen |

Combo ticket with the Art Museum. Museum cafe is good. Loved the gems and minerals exhibit. Halfprice after 3 pm (we visited on a Thursday, when it is open till 8 and it was not crowded!)

By Nikkii |

This was the first place my husband and I went when we got to Pittsburgh. It was a very interesting place and we would definitely recommend to others.

By Dexter B |

There is a lot of places to see here, so give yourself 3 to 4 hours. Lots of interesting things to see and I found if you take your time and talk to the volunteers, you'll learn so much more than just reading the plaques.
Here's one of the things I learned from a Volunteer that I would have just passed by the display without even knowing any of this and the story is fascinating and he told it well:
My favorite was learning about Senica Indian named Cornplanter. (Actually KI ON-TWOG-KY). He was half white. He helped in the Revolutionary war and after we beat the British he was given a lot of land for his assistance in getting the Seneca Indians to fight to free the land of the British.
He had houses and other buildings on it. Later, the Government took the land under eminent domain so they could build a dam that would flood his land. They were given a reservation instead in New York. They never replaced his land for another land of his own which he himself had owned.

By Chris B |

We've been to several natural history museums and I have to say that the dinosaur exhibit here is one of the best! The backgrounds and faux plants are really well done and so much better than just bones in a stark white room. The museum is smaller than most though but you get the added bonus of the art museum so I would say the admission price was worth it.

By Janius E |

My 5 year old, dinosaur loving grandson possibly had the greatest day of his life here! The dinosaur section is WONDERFUL, so were almost all of the other exhibits. Allison, one of the guides, spent almost an hour with our grandson. She answered questions and gave him any information he wanted plus described the dinosaurs and the displays. She was terrific. Probably the funniest part of the visit was when our grandson walked into the glass at the African Plains exhibit because the display cleverly continued on BOTH sides of the glass. He thought he could walk right into the Lion display! This museum should be at the top of any dinosaur lover's visit list.

By Exploration149197 |

Awful place, really looked forward to this visit with my family, very disappointed terrible staff follow you around and insist you wear a mask the way they want you to. Mind you it was not busy very few people, I see why now. The displays were nothing but plastic models and boring at that. Waste of money ..would not recommend this at all! Save your money!

By The_Wanderer1992 |

My husband and I explored this museum while in Pittsburgh. We had timed 10 am tickets and had no problems parking or getting in on time. We began in the natural history section. We enjoyed the mineral and gem section and seeing the animals. This museum is huge and will take several hours to see. The natural history museum in New York City is better in my opinion, but this one still holds its own.

By Marv R |

The expanse of exhibits provides the opportunity for hours of viewing, or for returning to see more. The highlight is definitely the dinosaurs. Their arrangement and size is outstanding. It also reinforces how important Pittsburgh was in the early exploration of dinosaurs through Carnegie's generosity. The mineral and gem exhibits are beautiful.

By ATravelingSushi |

Visit on a weekday after 3pm for half price tickets and discount parking. The museum closes at 5pm so you won’t be done exploring in 2h - however one can always return! Great museum with lots of interesting exhibits. Highlights for me were the dinosaur and polar bear exhibits.

By DEBBIE A |

We come every couple of years. There is much to see here. Loved the hall of minerals and gems! My favorite ❤️

By Mary |

This was our second visit first one was great enjoyed it so much we came back but second visit not as good the museum was still great but there was a group touring from a daycare or camp I think and a couple of the older children were very unruly running yelling thru the display and no one seemed to address issue the chaperone didn’t address it other than the yelling and climbing and running the museum is a lovely place

By Linda N |

Imagine not only seeing dinosaur bones but being able to lie next to one; or touching a lion mount! The dioramas allowed my 4 yr old grandson to get a feel for the size of one animal next to another. He especially enjoyed the igloo and seeing the kayak and walrus exhibit.

By Bedazzelle P |

This museum is a must see if you are visiting or from Pgh. My favorite is the gem room with the brilliant diamonds and gemstones! they are so glittery and surreal! It is my favorite in the entire museum. Time to visit again and sparke!

By tabhauser |

If you live in an area that does not have a world-class natural history and art museum, or if you enjoy these things, consider visiting the Carnegie Museum of Natural History or the Carnegie Museum of Art.

They are both under one roof and you can spend an entire day between both places.

The natural history museum has 10,000 items on exhibit. My quick visit included a look at their internationally recognized paleontology section that had an impressive dinosaur collection. Their collection of minerals and gems are exceptional

By Tom M |

Great "Don't Miss" museum. This place is wonderful. So many different and amazing displaces. The dinosaurs were spectacular and the architectural exhibits were also.

By ashleytravels89 |

This place is definitely worth a trip. The boyfriend and I checked it out at 3 pm, so admission was only $10 (admission is regularly $20 but at 3 pm admission switches to $10). There was so much to see we didn’t get to see it all. The museum was very well done. The dinosaurs and Egyptian exhibits were my favorites.

By Austropotamobius |

I was amazed by this museum. The quality of the exhibits from dinosaurs to minerals are some of the best I have ever seen and all set in a building of architectural quality which reflects the affluence of its benefactor.

By GoeieWitte |

Impossible to visit and enjoy it all in one afternoon. Exploring the varied exhibits takes a few days.
Convenient parking in the adjacent paid parking deck.
Easy access and check-in.
Spend a good amount of time in the Hillman minerals halls after walking past the dinosaur exhibits.
Several mineral them exhibits show their age and are falling behind compared to other natural history museums. Great specimens and lighting.
No interactive or educational activities for youngsters in the geo-mineral section.

By BW1122214 |

We enjoyed a full day with the history parts of the musuem. Highly recommend going and seeing the dinosaurs, egyptian history, and carved artworks from history.

By Kim N |

Admission covers this and the art museum! So much to see in both, you’ll need a full day or multiple visits to take it all in.

By Mark M |

There is so much to see -- we spent 6 hours and needed twice that much time to see everything. The dinosaur exhibit is truly fascinating as well as the gem display. It would be a great place to take kids as there are so many hands on sections.

By edvh81 |

We were standing at the top of the Duquesne Incline and debating whether to go to the Carnegie Natural History Museum or the Carnegie Science Museum. Our group of 5 was split and the majority wanted the Natural History Museum. None of us were disappointed with this choice. Parking was available but it’s in a paid parking garage. My brother in law was wearing his Vietnam Veteran hat and they let him in for 1/2 price. A nice gesture. Seniors get a reduced rate.

The museum was fantastic. Display after display was informative and well done. We spent 3 hours touring and only saw a fraction of the Natural History museum and none of the Art Museum which is also included in your admission. We started with dinosaurs and ended with jewelry. There is something for everyone. Employees/volunteers were available and quite knowledgeable and added to the experience. The map of the museum was minimal and not very helpful. Fortunately the layout of the museum flowed nicely from exhibit to exhibit. A great way to spend a day in Pittsburgh.

The Natural History Museum is adjacent to the Museum of Art with one entrance and one fee. We visited three sections of the Natural History Museum (those that supported our interest in the arts) and were impressed by the curatorship, quality and depth of the Arctic and Native American collections. The art objects from many different cultures are provided context; the quality is superb. One can tell immediately that the curators, as mentioned in the exhibits, actively asked for and received the assistance of Native American artists and experts who were able to fully explain the objects. Whether you are interested in the Art or the Natural History, these two collections are not be missed. Best Natural History exhibits we have ever seen.

Took the 61 bus from downtown, easy breezy and safe. Dropped me right off outside the museum doors. And if you are a member, you can have access to all the Carnegie Museums FREE...Worth the $100.....Support the arts! Saw a mini exhibit of Monet and other great exhibits...BUT THE MINERAL/GEM collection. Oh La La..go go go. I spent a good 3 hours in the place, but it was such a great day, I had to get some sun. The grounds around the area are so inviting.

First of all, you gain admission to the art museum and the natural history museum with one ticket. The main hall of the old part of the museum is spectacular. My wife and I spent most of our time in the natural history museum. The dinosaur hall is a definite highlight, with a huge number of skeletons and very nice interactive computer graphics which explain lots of interesting details. There were life-sized dioramas on North American and African habitats upstairs. We also walked through the sculpture hall, which is beautiful, and through an exhibit The Fabricated Landscape showing artistic structure, some that were constructed and some fanciful and imaginary. Our last stop was in the Hall of Architecture, which has over 140 plaster casts of buildings and sculptures from Greek and Roman times to the medieval period. It was amazing.
The facility itself is labyrinthine, so pay attention to your map, or ask someone.

Took our dinosoar obsessed 2yr old for his birthday and he LOVED it! We went through the dino part a could of times. It was very clean and easy to walk around and see everything.

Easy parking to visit both the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and Museum of Art.....easy to navigate exhibit rooms and can take as long as you want to see everything...also grab a quick bite to eat at two different cafes :) check out website for special events

Love the dinosaur exhibit. Amazing to see them up close. Also loved the gem and mineral exhibit. A large part of the museum is taxidermied animals and I am not a fan of that, but it is educational. It is connected to the Art Museum and I loved their Impressionist collection. Very easy to spend 3-4 hrs here. Parking is only $7 in their lot....a bargain for downtown Pittsburgh. A nice place for adults and older kids.

I was disappointed during my visit. There were at least 4 exhibitions closed. Lots of hands on things for small kids. Probably will not come back if I’m honest.

This is a huge museum (2 floors) including dinosaur exhibits, natural history exhibits, african wildlife exhibits, minerals/gems exhibits, cenozoic era mammal exhibits, north american wildlife exhibits, geology exhibits, botany exhibits, artic life exhibits, dioramas, amphibian/reptile exhibits, hands on wild animal encounters and more. All the visual exhibits just made it better. We were there for over 4 hours and enjoyed every minute of it. You get to the art museum by climbing a long staircase at the entrance.

It was very well organized and beautifully done. There are so many visual exhibits kids of all ages will enjoy this place and it will surely keep their attention. My only complaint was the small kids running around in the art museum. One art piece in particular (it was a bit like a fun house mirror) had 3 kids jumping around it, laughing/screaming very loudly, and patting it with their hands. I never did see the parents. It would have been nice if the museum guards had stopped them. We waited at least 10 minutes before we were able to get a picture of it without them in it. They finally ran off to cause havoc in other areas. The museum let me down with this (had to rate it down one star for it) but I still found the museum excellent. I highly recommend it.

If you are hungry I thought the cafe was not only beautiful but our club sandwich (we shared it) was very good. Not a huge beer selection (mostly coffee and wine)
but they did offer IPAs (for my husband) and stouts for me. This was one of our last outings before they started closing attractions due to COVID.

Must visit place in PITTS. For history enthusiasts and art lovers. Great work on display. Amazing sculptures. Simply wowed by the amazing craftmanship of yester years.

Small, interesting museum. Not crowded like museums in NYC. Decent amount of different displays. If you have extra time on your hands it's worth the trip to browse around.

Haven.t been there in years but it.s a great place to visit. The staff from the parking attendants to the technical folks at the exhibits were overly friendly and helpful. If you.re going to Pittsburgh, you gotta stop and see this place. We spent about 3 hours but could have easily made an entire day of it. I had three teenagers with me 14 . 17 . And 19. All were amused and engaged. Lots to see and the lady near the deep sea dinosaur pulled out a jaw bone for some pictures......kids loved it

History. History. History Galore !!! The Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh leaves everyone in awe of History !!! It’s NEVER to late to learn and love historic events, Itens, and the people involved.

Carnegie Museum of Natural History, although lacks some of the spectacles seen in that of other cities, still offers a useful insights into some areas such as Egypt, Polar, and Indians. Some parts were closed during the time I visited but there was also “Live reptiles” exhibition, providing a nice gimmick to the museum. The building is interconnected to Carnegie Museum of Art, which is packaged with the same ticket so visitors can explore both museums in one-go. Worth a visit if you are in Pittsburg for more than a day.

Museum for the first couple of rooms was interesting. After that, it got boring. Not typical History that I thought it would be, but, more from Dinosaurs to Native Americans. Some interesting artifacts. They do not take Discover and you can not take drinks. When we went, we had our Yeti cups and they wanted us to walk the 1/2 mile back to the car to put the cups in there. So, my mother had to stay outside with our drinks while we walked through. It took us about 2 hours to walk through.

This museum has a great variety of exhibits on display. There is something to see for everyone, no matter what age!

An unreal amount of material to walk through.
My favorite sections were the Birds and the Polar World
Please make sure to read the placards, as some of them are quite funny.
There was one where two male elks were displayed fighting one another, with two females in the back eating leaves -- the caption read "Two Cow elk interrupting their late afternoon activity, watch indifferently." It correlated those machismo contests we have seen in bars, all too often.
There was also a display of animals like "Hummingbird; hit by car driven by elderly person" and "Hellbender; choked on marshmallow likely left by a camper" and "Starling; Invasive Songbird first introduced to North America by Shakespeare fans" to name a few.

This was so much better than the others we’ve been to across the country!

The dinosaur, Native American, Ancient Egypt, animal & architecture sections were amazing! Any kid would love this and adults will not be disappointed!

This is an outstanding museum for dinosaur enthusiasts. Lots of the critters and they are so nicely set and displayed. It was great to wander through the dino gallery and imagine them coming to life. Whoever set up the displays had a subtle sense of humor. There is one where a large fish seems to be chasing a smaller one and the little guy has a real look of fear on his bony face.

I liked that this city museum has the art and natural history combined in the same complex. Parking for 4.5 hours in their lot cost us $17. The exhibits were well-spaced apart so you don’t feel crammed like in other cities. It was interesting to walk from one room with abstract art into the next room with impressionistic works, and then there were objects like pottery and furniture blended in with the paintings. I kind of liked that design. Much more modern art than I expected to see here. There were a few Bouguereau and Singer Sargent which were so crisp and beautiful. Dinosaur displays were excellent. Was disappointed to learn the magnificent monastery walls in the Architecture hall were plaster casts, but still amazing to see. Adults $19 and kids $12. This is a definite activity to do (with kids or not) when visiting pgh.

The Carnegie Museum is a 10/10. The location is beautiful, the exhibits are stunning, and the staff was friendly. Parking is cheap at $10 with no time limit and a safe parking garage. This museum will keep you busy for 4 or more hours.

I am a self-proclaimed gem nerd, so the mineral exhibit was why we originally came. The amount of fossils, precious gems, and unique jewelry was mind-blowing. Make sure to check out the fluorescent and radiation exhibits. In addition to their extensive gem collection, the dinosaur exhibits and Egyptian archaeology exhibit impressed us both.

The price of the ticket includes both the Natural History and Art museums. However, we spent over four hours in the Natural History Museum and had no time to check out the art exhibits. Next time we will be sure to check it out!

The only thing the London Museum of Natural History has over Carnegie is the Rosetta Stone. Huge. The exhibit of National Geographic 50 Best Animal Photographs was worth the price of admission alone. Then there were the dinosaurs and the Native American sections were excellent. Great for kids too.

If you're into dinosaurs, this is the place to go. So many to see and we spoke to a lady paleontologist who gave us some insigts to the exhibits. Also saw the Indigenous peoples displays and spoke to a lady in that area. Went through the Egyptian area as well, even though some of it was closed, and that was very interesting.
