This Cathedral Basilica is used mainly for weddings. It is spectacular to look at. And we asked the decon for a history lesson, It was fascinating to hear.

For those who have never been, Christmas caroling in the cathedral will be a delightful surprise. For us, who have participated many times , it is something to look forward to every year. Enjoy.

This gem of a building is adjacent to Branch Brook Park... and well worth a visit. The architecture is imposing, the stained glass and adornments luminous, and the people very welcoming. It is a wonderful place to exercise your spiritual self... whether that means Catholic mass, praying,or meditating. Tours are given the first Sunday of the month after the 12 n service... and a digital tour is offered on the website.

this is a beautiful cathedral, Pope John Paul ll visited when he came to NYC, this is a mini look of St Patrick's cathedral of NYC,

By 82bernicel |

Entering the basilica you will catch your breath at the height and volume of the space. Even if you are not Catholic or religious you will appreciate the old world design and craftsmanship. The woodwork is ornate, intricate and warm. I suggest trying to arrange a tour if possible to learn the history of the cathedral and meaning of the religious elements. A visit during a religious service is even more impressive. A treasure in the Newark area.

By paul3776 |

May be the largest church in New Jersey & certainly one of the most beautiful. We have attended religious services here as well as a Confirmation and a funeral, all of which were very moving and impressive.

By nack1949 |

I grew up near the cathedral and enjoyed going there often . I also went to school right next to it. so i was able to just go in and pray or just marvel at the architecture wonder. it took a long time to complete, bit it's one of the most tranquil places I've been.
Also , I gave my wife her engagement ring on Christmas Eve midnight mass in 1966

This Cathedral is phenomenal the high ceilings are a sight to see. The structure of the building itself is an amazement. The church is kept beautiful inside.

By travelingrm |

I just attended a Christmas Carol Concert at the Cathedral. The Cathedral Choir and Orchestra were extraordinary. The architecture and lighting defy description. The holiday decorations and candelight setting were breathtaking. This beautiful basilica is a must see. Attending a concert here is an unforgettable experience.

The basilica has amazing stain glass windows and a wonderful chapel hidden away. The grounds are kept in remarkable order. It is a diamond in the rough.

By Carole l |

Part of a day tour , we enjoyed a full tour of the Cathedral and recommend any group, large or small be guided through.

This majestic cathedral is seen from across one of the most beautiful parks in New Jersey. It's majestic among older urban houses and business.

By AMD1155 |

Went for a Christmas concert and an unofficial tour another time. Actually got to see the catacombs underneath, shhhh! All the side chapels are just as beautiful.

By Cager H |

The Church is Massive and Beautiful!! A Gem in The Naborhood, and Outside of Branch Brook Park.. With Easy Access To Both Highways and Public Transit

By thor2705 |

It is a great church, nice stained glass, big Gothic interior and exterior expected more from a cathedral in Europe that one in USA. Nice mass on Sundays. Take care where you park and not to be alone the area is not very secure.

By podrozniczka60 |

This magnificent building is simply beautiful . The interior is neogothic with tall walls of the main nave. Looks great when all lit up, very distinctive. It is one of the largest cathedrals in US. It makes it also for a very beautiful landmark on the skyline of Newark.

By Tinamarie A |

Quality time is always spent there on Sundays with my babes Holly. My #1girl. Also I love it cause it creates l a calm atmosphere all around the area.😊

By Cristina Gómez |

Beautiful place. Excellent human warmth. I had the immense blessing of attending two Sunday masses. I left comforted.

By Allen V |

This place is so beautiful. The art, the archetecture, the organist and choir were magnificent. We were at a deaconate ordination in May and we left edified.

By rutansh |

Actually I went to see cherry-blossom in nearby park, but I was to early for the blossom ;-) So, I went to check out this cathedral one Saturday morning, without any background. And I was amazed by the beauty of this place!! This is really a huge cathedral. They decorated the insides with fresh spring flowers for Easter Sunday. Very nice paintings and glass-windows all around the church. Even though I belong to different faith, I could feel presence of the almighty there.

It was one of the most peaceful places I've ever been to. John Muir once compared Sierra and Yosemite with god's grand cathedral...after visiting Yosemite, Grand Canyons etc. and now this cathedral - I can understand him better.

A very beautiful and highly unexpected church in the Newark neighborhood known for its nefarious activities! Must visit

By Pavlonia |

The day I went there, there happened to be a wedding. The photo ops were pretty incredible for the bride and groom. I was there that day for a baby christening. Photos were taken in the nearby Branch Brook Park of the baby with the church in the background. It looked like a shot of some European medieval cathedral!
The inside of the church is incredible. There are grottos dedicated to Saints. The one we were in was dedicated to Saint Rocco whom I had never heard of before. Not coincidentally that was the baptized infant's name.
Just look at the architectural features inside and out. Really beautiful.

By Lamouria B |

The inside is grand and beautiful, comparable to any world-class Basilica. The grounds and neighboring Branch Brook Park have undergone a significant renovations which provide scenic photographs in Spring, when the Cherry Blossoms bloom and Autumn, during the Fall foliage changes.

By Judy S |

I have traveled throughout the world & have seen many churches & Cathedrals. Sacred Heart is one of the most beautiful. The stained glass windows are magnificent. We happened to stop in on a day when a wedding was taking place & the sound of the organ music was angelic.

By narayanan a |

The cathedral in Newark is worth visiting for its Gothic architecture.Looks like Germans have made this as a part of heritage and reminds one of Cologne. The prayer here on a Sunday and then step out to the nearby Park was resuructing our spirits. The park is a donation by Prudential insurance co Japan.Spring gives out Cherry Blossoms in this place. With a small poolside water spring delighting us we end up thanking Hindu Gods.Tolerance is haal mark of Hindus. and sacret hearts live here in Cherry blossoms.Donated by the devastated Japanese to captolists USA.We saluted the spirit.

By eervin996398 |

I was able to see the archbishop and take photos during the Easter break. It was amazing! My family enjoyed the outing.

By Suzette200 |

Well worth the visit. We were there during a mass so were unable to explore the church fully. The rose window and other stained glass windows were magnificent!

The Cathedral Basilica in Newark is stunningly beautiful, inside and out, and a fine example of French Gothic Revival architecture right here in New Jersey. From the marble altars to the intricately carved woodwork in the ambulatory to the sculptures throughout, fine artistry is on display here. So, too, the beautiful stained glass windows — including the enormous rise window at the end of the central nave — the soaring columbs and the vaulted ceilings are outstanding examples of the artisans’ crafts. Individual chapels, dedicated to different saints, ring the ambulatory. And one chapel — dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes — contains the kneeler used by Pope John Paul II on his visit to the church in 1995. The exterior architecture, reminiscent of Paris’s Notre Dame, is also stunningly beautiful. There is so much to see and enjoy here, whether viewed as a serene, active place of worship or as an outstanding gem of art, architecture and history. The Cathedral Basilica is well worth a visit. Stop by the office (accessible through the canopied entrance at 89 Ridge Street) when you arrive. There you can get a brochure to help on your self-guided tour.

By elitetrav |

In the middle of the urban landcape in Newark, Sacred Heart's spires loom in the distance. A guided tour of the Cathedral can be arranged through the Archdiosian office. You can call and set up a tour which will give you the history of the Bascillica from the architecture, the builders, the inspiration, and the visit from the Pope. It is truly worth a tour and can also be enjoyed if you attend one of the many musical performances that the church offers. There is no fee, but a suggested donation is welcome ( $2.00 per person)

By Ron S |

The Basilica is a cultural center for New Jersey. A great place for Catholics for mass or for weddings, it is also home to great music and other performances. Pope John Paul I visited here, and so did I! Loved it (and I'm not Catholic).

By LouiseOrrock |

I think this is the church I saw from the outside and took a photo of, although I didn't go inside. It is one of a number of hotels in the area.

By LoveToTravel061203 |

over the years, i have visited the cathedral basilica of the sacred heart dozens of times and its beauty never ceases to amaze me. i've been to weddings, funerals, masses, etc there and have always come away feeling wonderful. i could see the cathedral basilica from my office window and it was always a source of comfort and awe.

the church i attended as a child and young adult was similar but not as large. both now exist in not so great areas of town but both can boast of parishoners who come back year after year and people like me who visit occasionally but just can't seem to stay away for too long.

By HermanTheGerman-inTX |

beautiful architecture, tough to find parking around her on a Sunday (of course). Take a walk around the lake and enjoy the cherry blossoms too.

By RickyLeeca |

My wife and I had the pleasure to attend Sunday Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, New Jersey. It is an absolutely beautiful place to visit and worship. There is also a lovely park with beautiful gardens located across the street.

By KaryAr5 |

Beautiful architectural work, when inside you just feel like you are in one od those awesome european cathedrals. Peace and spiritual connection while visiting. A must see of Newark.

Your breath is taken away when you enter the cathedral. The architecture is outstanding and the feeling is surreal.

What an AMAZING Cathedral Basilica – one of the largest French Gothic-style places of worship – right in Newark, NJ!!

The Basilica is on The National Register of Historical Places.

It took a long time in the creation of this masterpiece. The Cathedral was proposed by the Bishop of Newark in 1859, six years after his appointment. Construction began in 1898, plans for the Gothic style were accepted in June 1913, and it was not completed till 1954. In 1995, Pope John Paul II celebrated evening Mass here and elevated it to a Basilica.

Its staggering size makes it the 5th largest Basilica in America. It is 365 feet long, and 165 feet tall. Its two towers extend 265 feet into the sky. It has the largest Pipe Organ which includes 9000 pipes, 54 stops, and is playable from two consoles.

The cavernous interior is very well maintained and is spotlessly clean. The architecture, the carved wood, the Chandeliers, the stained glass Windows, the marble Carvings, the Statues, ornate Doors, and the 14 Mosaics depicting the Stations of the Cross, were all so magnificent that it made our jaws drop. The Altar made of Italian Marble is stunning.

A stop at this place has been on our bucket list for way too long, and we were thrilled that we finally made the time to come here. Tons and tons of spring flowers beautifully arranged near the Altar for Easter made our visit doubly memorable.

A ā€œMust Visitā€ place.

By paul m |

If you have never been here then you are missing one of the most amazing places in newark. It is literally right off branchbrook park. the inside is on a scale almost the equal of St Patrick's in New York. The archeticture is amazing, and so is the Stained glass. There is a 7:30 am and PM mass daily in the back chapel. this is in addition to the weekend schedule. there is a reason it is called a basilica and not a church. Go see for yourself.

By victor |

Ask for the the tour person (is not every day), very nice Cathedral, grandiose organ, nice historical building.

By 87ivettet |

Attended a graduation there. Beautiful space, truly impressive. The altar is breathtaking and the acoustics are amazing. Grandiose structure, regardless of your religious affiliation, this is an amazing space to reflect, meditate, pray or whatever you choose to do. It can be seen from miles away from the highway and it sits by Branch Brook Park and its beautiful cherry blossoms and ponds.

By Kenneth P |

Went there for services years ago and it is really beautiful choir and all. If you’re in the area and have the time stop in and visit

By Jeremy T |

I was in Branch Brook Psark yesterday. After walking through this extensive park we drovw to the end to see the fountain area. I saw this Cathedral sitting majestically high up a hill I thought with iflags flying from ts spires it looked like something out of King Arthur's Court.

By Eric Inigo |

Thought we would do something different in this NJ trip. Visited cathedrals and discovered this beautiful Sacred Heart Cathedral - 5th largest cathedral in North America. Very solemn place and quite timely that the Holy Door was still open. Magnificent facade, altar and overall architecture. Check out the Blessed Sacrament and say a little prayer. Make sure to also visit the restrooms at the top floor and note the stained glass.

By ChrisDCarlson |

The Pope has visited. This is as close to the "old world" Cathedrals as it gets. It is a working church however, not just a sight seeing destination. Having said that, you will find the care takers warm, informative, and inviting. It is a long look. Be respectful, but look, walk around. Pick out the Stations of the Cross. Admire the stained glass. Examine the stone workmanship. Walk around the outside also. It is what it is suppose to be.

By maldomi1 |

This cathedral is very beautiful inside. Go and get a tour!! From buried priests below to the gold statues behind the altar! The architect in the church is amazing. A great place to visit for all!!!!

By lholmok |

This Brasilia is one of a kind. It is awe inspiring and beautiful. Plan ahead and see if you can get a guided tour
The stained glass windows are breathtaking and so is the main and side altars

The Homily was on accepting others, loving your neighbours and always being humane in your community.
This Cathedral is shared between the Spanish and the English Parishiners.

The church is very beautiful,we visited last month and it was time of cherry blossom, the surrounding was very beautiful.I was not knowing that such a beautiful place is near my location.Along with this we visited the park near by, it was great time with family.

By barry m |

I have stopped to take a look sometimes a take pictures.
This is one of the largest cathederals on the East coast, from what I have read about it.
There are nice Italian restaurants and bakeries nearby. This was once a major Italian neighborhood at one time.

By Nakia D |

great church for the holidays and regular service. it is also very very big amazing location for weddings and a huge park right down the street to take more pictures

By raybyerley |

It was a nice evening for a walk up the hill to see this beautiful cathedral.

A very nice lady let me go in even though the sign showed only open to 5 pm on Monday. I got there at 6 pm

Beautiful Cathedral in Center of Newark. In French late Gothic style with many beautiful details. Attend the sunday service of noon. Once in the Month a guided tour is offered to the participants of ther service right after.

Gorgeous church besides the Vatican in Rome 2nd biggest cathedral ive ever seen. Just dont book your wedding there. 2 or 3 year wait. and they want a very big Donation

By BonV20152015 |

with its 100s of candles lighting the basilica, it is most wonderful Christmas concert with instruments and choirs anywhere, whether Protestant or Catholic, there is none better. Not to be missed.
It is going to happen 12/16 and 12/17. I went a previous year and that choice isn't available.

By Ccari01 |

The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart is the seat of the Catholic Archdiocese of Newark. My husband and I went for a church visit on Good Friday .We were still wary about crowds so we went before the scheduled services.Parking was not an issue.Entry was thru a side door. The interior was gorgeous but subdued .Whether you are religious or not,you will appreciate this stunning Gothic French architectural gem in North America.

If you come to see the Sacred Heart Basilica in April, you'll be in for a double-treat. Fantastically interesting large basilica in the middle of Newark's cherry tree festival. The basilica is quite vast and very impressive, with its large organs and stained glass windows. The cherry trees generally bloom from late March to mid-April - a must see for anyone visiting the basilica, or the city of Newark and its environs.

By Jennifer E T |

I am a lover of architecture, so for me this building s a treasure. If you didn't know that you were in the City of Newark, you might think that you were in a Vatican Building.

By CDF17 |

A great Cathedral and Branch Brook park with its Cherry blossom trees blooming in the spring is right across the street.

By Joey D |

One of the best hidden secrets in Newark..........The Cathedral's architecture is magnificant......At night you could see it lights fron Route 280.... seconds away from St. Lucy's Church & St. Gerard Festival........ If it is good enough for a Pope to visit..........

Joseph Dondyire😪 would go here on Sunday's to worship. I followed him there a few times. šŸ˜†

This Newark landmark combines the solemnity of history with exquisitely beautiful art and a location that is visible from most parts of the city.

By jjkam91 |

The inside of this church is amazing!!! The architecture is like one of a kind. I would suggest a visit here. I went Christmas Eve to the midnight mass and I had a very happy experience. I've gone to other events they have and always enjoyed my time here!! It is worth the drive if you do not live near Newark. And it does not matter if you are not catholic because I am not either but it was a nice service and the church is beautiful!!!

By Zimminaroundtheworld |

The Basilica in Newark is simply beautiful! I flew into Newark, and stayed the night mainly so I could see the Basilica. It reminded me of many cathedrals I've seen in Europe. Both the interior and exterior are gorgeous. Upon entering, you need to sign in, but are free to walk around and explore. You can walk to the second floor and get great photographs from above. The surrounding area is a bit sketchy, but there is a beautiful park nearby that is safe. When visiting Newark, make the Basilica your number one attraction!

By Elaine S |

The cathedral was beautiful and the singers beautiful. The pews are a bit hard for a concert but the concert is a beautiful Christmas event.

By Vladimir P |

I discovered this Beautifil Basilica on my way to Branch Brook Park to see cherry blossoming and was shocked by the beauty of the Cathedral made in French Gothic Revival style. The history of the construction is long - more than fifty years. Its a must to see the inside also. Basilica reminded me a lot of Nothe Dame de Paris tragedy due to lookalike style.

By ViennaSunflower |

Breathtaking! The choir is OUTSTANDING! I had no idea this place was in Newark, I would have visited years ago. The architecture, the statues, the stained glass windows, and more. So much beauty to take in. Needed more time.

By duck8to |

Construction began in 1898 but it was not completed in the French Gothic Revival style until 1954.Pope John II celebrated evening mass here upon his visit to the U.S. in 1995, where upon it was elevated to a Basilica. Located in the Forrest Hills section of Newark's North Ward, the Sacred Heart shines as a beacon when traveling on Route 280 at night. In the spring the Basilica is a perfect accompaniment to the cherry blossoms of Branch Brook Park It is the 5th largest Basilica in North America at 365' x 165' with two towers (232') and a spire at (260'). The interior has stained glass windows, 14 mosaic stations of the cross, an Italian Botticino marble alter and wonderful carved arched windows. As grand as the architecture is the experience of the mass is equally as grand. The priests are warm caring individuals and the doors are almost always open. Come for a mass, listen to the Basilica organ and talented canters. There are also free organ concerts and the Christmas candle light concert is exceptional. Guided tours are available after the 12 o'clock Sunday Mass. The Basilica is on the National Registry of Historical Places.

By careertutor |

matches anything in Manhattan. Have enjoyed their Christmas concerts, and hear they are still as glorious as ever. Oldest date I can enter is a year ago, but it's been several since I've been inside the cathedral, which is easy to get to from the downtown Newark side of Branch Brook Park.

By thismike |

It's really an impressive sight. Architecture is amazing. The neighborhood is a little bit questionable but everything on the grounds is really nice.

By JCC46 |

A bit of Europe in the heart of Newark. Not to be missed. Historic Landmark visited by Popes and world leaders.

By P F B |

WOW! What a beautiful cathedral. Having visited the National Cathedral in DC, and St Patrick's Cathedral in NYC - this is up there and worth the visit. This is beautiful inside. And unlike St Patrick's Cathedral where the tail buildings block out the sunlight from lighting up the stained glass windows, the sunlight brightly illuminates the stained glass windows here.

By G S W |

As a long time resdient of Newark, I very often pass by this facility. I've even brought friends visiting me by there to see it. They were amazed!! On another visit by other friends visiting I decided to go inside for a tour. I, along with my friends were BLOWN AWAY!!! It is a magnificent facility!!

By njfcu |

Went to get Mass Card and service was fast and courteous. This church is very enormous and has very beautiful colored stained glass windows.

By sanju_222323 |

This building is the fifth largest cathedral in North America, roughly the size of Westminster Abbey, stunningly beautiful, inside and out.

It is 365 feet long and 161 feet wide. The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark. It is located at 89 Ridge Street in the Lower Broadway neighborhood of Newark, New Jersey. We were there on a silent quiet day, got the street side parking. We had recently come from the Europe trip and after seeing this, we are like " this church can compete with any famous church in Europe" and it was in the backyard of our county and we were not aware of this.

It has the largest Pipe Organ which includes 9000 pipes, 54 stops, and is playable from two consoles.

Perfect and exact example of French Gothic architecture in the Western Hemisphere. The Cathedral Basilica is well worth a visit.

By phvi2617 |

Sacred Heart Cathedral Basilica is a magnificent church built in a splendid French Gothic style. The striking interior is filled with beautiful sculptures, carvings, mosaics, and stained glass, including three gorgeous rose windows.

It's one of the largest cathedrals in the country, and you immediately feel a sense of awe when you walk in. Outside of mass, you can visit the basilica by checking in at the rectory (89 Ridge Street). The staff is very welcoming. Definitely worth a visit!

By Richard Elias Pinto |

My favorite part about this enormous church are the stained glass windows. So pretty. You can visit during the day time, and even the mass is very short and well dne. The grounds are well maintained. We went here often on weekends when the kids were younger, as it was very accessible.

By Sonja C |

Wow, that is all I can say. Absolutely beautiful and so huge!!!! Reminders me of the Cathedrals that you see in Europe. Unfortunately when I was there you could not enter.

By Mitch M |

This was the most gorgeous cathedral I've ever seen! We went the day before Easter Sunday and they were busy setting up flowers for the Easter service. The architecture is stunning, everything about this cathedral is marvelous. Whether you want to see a service or just see a beautiful building, this cathedral is a must-see if you're in Newark!

By Mary Ellen N |

I have attended a number of the Seton Hall University graduations at this cathedral and find it to be just a magnificent venue. Worth going to just to visit. Coming off Rt. 280, the ride is not bad and parking is relatively easy in the middle of the day, in the middle of the week.

By henryg12345 |

This is a majestic building edifice that is amazing inside and out and overlooks Branch Brook Park. It is very impressive and one of the finest houses of worship in the U.S. and is probably one of NJ's most beautiful buildings.

One of the bigger churches in the east. Nice windows. If it is cherry blossom time, drive through the park next to the church.

By Artsyfran |

There are so many wonderful things to see and learn about this Cathedral Basilica it would be difficult to absorb it all during one visit. Multiple visits are highly recommended and an organized tour is a must. I've visited St. Patrick's Cathedral in NYC and had no idea New Jersey had such a magnificent Cathedral until I moved to NJ seven years ago.

By Juan Jaramillo |

I'm into photography and happened to go today to this place with my gear. A wedding was taking place and once everybody left I asked permission for a few pics and it was granted. I had a fest with my camera given that this place cathedral is majestic and beautiful.

By Phil G |

This is a beautiful Basilica and the architecture is awesome. The interior can take your breath away

By Peter U |

This is a work of art; as cathedrals go. It is a very valid cathedral; big vaulted ceiling, large stained glass windows, great organ. It's next to a large beautiful park with cherry blossoms that equal Washington dc.

By Jrugburn |

Stunning. The renovations were well worth whatever was spent on it This cathedral is loved By the Catholic community in the surrounding towns, they would not visit Newark otherwise. The sense of awe that cloaks you upon entry,is only quickly overpowered by the rush of emotions that succumb you to his presence in this wonderful building. I have been visiting this cathedral for 30 years or so and the same thing happens to me ever time I enter.I visit at least once a year otherwise it's tough to get in with the amount of worshipers during the observed Feasts. stunning architecture ,lofty ceiling, A wonder of an altar. If you've never visited, you must, Catholic or not. surrounding area not too pleasant, park in the cathedral's parking lot

By laverita |

What a gem in Newark's history. It is so worth a visit as the architecture, statues, altars, and length and breath of it are outstanding. It is like the baby sister of the Basilica in Washington which is absolutely gorgeous.
It took dozens of years to be built mostly by Italian immigrants. Go and be impressed.

By Joann K |

Such a beautiful and holy place. Been here many times to attend Red Mass in September and for wedding ceremonies.

By Bradt255 |

This is a large beautiful cathedral done in a French Gothic style. The style is not the typical American cathedral style but it is beautiful and very welcoming. The mix/contrast of colors is eye catching. It reminds you of a cathedral in France and other parts of Europe. It's in a nice & safe neighborhood and is very close to Branch Brook Park. Parking is not a problem.

By morr316 |

A really beautiful cathedral. Really shouldn't miss it if you're in the area - great craftsmanship and an incredible atmosphere.

By vtarch823 |

Timeless church with a storied history, worth the visit.. Open for services most days, but the beauty of the church is well pleasing.

By Anthony S |

I live in the area so I've been to the basilica a few times but the last time I was there it was for a tour, the Cathedral is a must-see the architecture the statues how clean it is the history it's just an amazing place to see. There is not much else to see around the Cathedral so that should be your only trip there to that area. The Pope was there a bunch of years ago and made the Cathedral a basilica which there are not many in this country which are both Cathedral Basilica.

If you are traveling in the area I would find a way of contacting them to see when they have another tour there free or attend a mass on Sunday which I have never done there.

By EVELYN T |

Very beautiful and safe church with security inside and outside beautiful church.I love it when I go together with my family!! Best Church in Jersey!!!

By Carole S |

This may be one of the largest Cathedrals in the world. Up till 20 or so years ago, masses were performed in Latin. It contains a fine organ and concerts are performed there. Across the street is Branch Brook Park designed by Olmstead who also designed Central Park in NYC.. Couples who are married in the Cathedral most often have wedding photos taken there.

By saltesh |

One would think you are in Europe. The stained glass windows are second only to Notre Dame, the music throughout the year impeccable in every way, the Stations of Cross are breathtaking. You must take the tour by the priest and learn the history. The chapels are beautiful, as well. FREE.

By Noemi N |

Great building, condusive to worship. Great choir, especially during the Holy Week. I always go on Good Friday night when they sing a capella. On Wednesday there are concerts.

By IndyOne |

I had some time in Newark and needed some place to go while waiting to check into my hotel. When driving through Newark this place definitely stands out. The sheer size is impressive. It is so peaceful and quiet inside. The stained glass and architecture are beautiful. If you have 30 minutes and want to see a beautiful cathedral, stop here. The literature said it is the fifth largest cathedral in North America.

By jonson |

Each time you enter this cathedral feels like the first. It's stunning and beautiful and mystical. You can wander around and discover the huge interior and let your soul ascend. Yet going there for mass or just to sit also feels warm and intimate. Its friendly and everyone feels at their best. The purpose of a cathedral is to soar and let in the light and be a total experience of soul and church and christ consciousness. We love visiting the cathedral and surroundings. It's inspiring and all about community..

By Mike R. |

I was visiting Newark and this cathedral calls for attention since downtown that I saw it. It is beautiful; it has a unique structure to other cathedrals. Definitely recommend it; it's very beautiful! It's next to the Brook Branch Park!

By Ken T |

I visited the cathedral during my lunch break from work and it was time well spent. The architecture inside and out is amazing. It is a free experience. However, I opted to buy the pamphlet (A Short Tour of The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart) for $4. I recommend that you bring your camera.

An absolutely beautiful church in Newark, near Branch Brook Park and Route 280. No need to be Catholic to appreciate the beauty of this building. As a place of worship it is awe inspiring.

By Winggal222 |

This historic cathedral is as beautiful as it was when it was built. You will adore this structure inside and out. Look in every nook, ceilings, floors, Windows..each inch designed perfectly. If you go during a holiday season, the altars are draped with thousands of plants. You can feel the spirit when you enter this holy building.
Be careful. The neighborhood is no longer safe. Park in front. Try not to walk any distance. Be alert and be safe.

Great History of the Cathedral with history and explanation of type of structure and stained glass windows.

By Janice L |

Stunning architecture makes the Cathedral Basilica of The Sacred Heart wondrous! It officially received the title "Cathedral Basilica" once Pope John Paul II blessed it and performed a high mass there. A glorious setting for weddings and special masses, it is not to be missed if one is visiting the NY/NJ area.

By BK Song |

Every stone catch my eyes! this is not only about beautiful architecture but also all about prayers. Just dont let your mind hold on visible things.

My daughter and three grandchildren were visiting from Florida and I took them roller skating at a near-by park. As we passed the cathedral, I mentioned that my Mom & Dad were there many years ago to renew their vows on their 5th wedding anniversary and that I had not been there since, over 50 years ago, even though I pass it several times a months on the way to the East Orange VA Hospital. We decided to go in for a private prayer. We were all amazed at this majestic building as we went up the front stairs. Then we were blown away by the number of small chapels surrounding the main altar. It is hard to describe the magnificent beauty of the Rose and other stained glass windows. I have been to Italy and, while it doesn't quite compare to St. Peter's, it is among the most magnificent buildings of its kind in the USA, comparable to the cathedral at Notre Dame. It is quite difficult to believe such a magnificent building in such a so-so neighborhood in Newark. The landscaping around the building is superb. We said our prayer and were quite enthusiastic about this experience. I have stopped in several more times since.

Whether you are religious or Catholic or not the amazing architecture is to be admired. The building is open and the church building can be toured for free.

Hold on to your heart and jaw they are about to drop. Beautiful cathedral and always nice services. The organist is amazing. Sounds like the heavens are opening and you are about to walk amongst the clouds and angels. Great to see or join for service!

A tourist attraction . An incredible landmark in a not so great area in the heart of the city of Newark.
Especially with Branch Brook Park in the background during spring when the Cherry Blossoms appear.

By Jerry D |

This national landmark has been to Hell and back, literally, but still remains the gem of this part of New Jersey.

The pope has visited here... My uncle sang Ave Maria at the mayor's daughter's wedding decades ago... And the stained glass rosette window is unmatched by any other Church in the area.

Just spending a few Quiet Moments there will do well to dispel any negative thoughts you may be feeling.

By Lou S |

Visited for a graduation Baccalaureate Mass... Hard to put in words the beauty and detail in this stunning building! A MUST SEE!

By kh9 |

Simply. If you are in Newark then you have to see this cathedral! It's not easy to get there from downtown (I used public bus) and it's not easy to find right doors but it's definitely worth seeing.

By lolo c |

i recommend going on a sunny day day so you can walk around the cathedral and take pictures. don't go at night because the area is dangerous. so beautiful on the inside. it's cool in the winter and hot in the summer inside so dress accordingly if you're going to service or a wedding. they don't make them like this anymore

By carl_a46602 |

A jewel in Newark, NJ. I take my out-town guests to see this beautiful cathedral. This
cathedral is comparable to those in Europe.

By Leonhkny |

We are quite surprised with the beauty of the cathedral. The architectural style is a hybrid of English and French styles, making it a combination of York Minster and Notre-Dame. Very outstanding facade. Unfortunately it was not open when we arrived.

By Livan L |

If you're from out of town or even a local, I highly recommend visiting this Cathedral whether you're Christian or not.

Beautiful structures inside with a mini-type of museum towards the back with a small chapel and relics on display.

A once in a lifetime experience.

Enjoy!

On a trip back home to Newark, NJ from California we stopped by to show my kids, wife and mother-in-law the church. My mom would always go to Christmas service here even though we are not Catholic.

By Nelson M |

Please make it a point to stop by and take a look at this beautiful basilica. It is one of the most beautiful churches in the USA. You won't be disappointed.

By Michael A |

I love church architecture and layout. It's rare, especially in the crowded life of the Tri state area, to find a church that is both majestic inside and out, along with the immediate area around the church to flow properly and accentuate the church. This church is simply magnificent. I am sorry, cathedral. If in Newark for work, visiting, or for a day trip...check this place out...will not disappoint.

By FILET2U |

I was here many years ago for my Aunts Wedding and since then I have been there for friends weddings and Gov. Christie's Mass when he first took office. My feeling when waking in there is something that was similar to when I walked into the Vatican. Great place to spend a quite moment or a mass. Make it a stop in NJ if visiting.

By m0ta17 |

Place is spectacular. Wish I knew about this one earlier. Beautiful cathedral, nice pics, quiet place to pray and easy to find. To enter, go to side entrance, not main door as it is locked. Truly recommend it! šŸ‘šŸ‘ŒšŸ‘

By Richard C |

This is a majestic edifice that is amazing inside and out as impressive of many of Europe's finest.

It can be seen from miles away and is probably NJ's most beautiful buildings.

By CrankyRob |

One of the most impressive places of worship I have ever visited.
Although not constructed in the classic sense it is a wonderful space in a most unexpected location.
Very much worth the time for a visit.

By leon l |

Ask anyone who lives in New Jersey where the great cathedral is and they will look at you dumbfounded. "There's a cathedral in Newark?" Yes, and it is modeled on the one in Rouen, France. Needless to say, it's magnificent. Where do you find it? Where do they place all great cathedrals - on a hill. Just look up and you will see it. It's not easy to get in. You have to enter by a side door and not be dressed in shorts and ball cap.

By dlelonek |

The is one amazing piece of archutecture. It is a masterpiece in the middle of a rundown area in Newark. It is well kept with glorious stain-glass windows. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. It is very well worth visiting.

By paul3776 |

The Basilica is truly amazing & beautiful. While it's not St. Patrick's or any of the other famous churches in the world it is definitely a destination that's worth visiting. We have been their 3 times in the past 6 years for a 1st Holy Communion, a funeral & a Confirmation & each time it was awe inspiring.

By scenic2015 |

When in Newark, it is a must visit. Breath-taking Cathedral!

I went there on a week day to pray. A wonderful experience everyone should have. The decor will leave you standing and looking for a long time.

By Raree18 |

What a spectacular architectural dream. So much marble and stained glass. It is a beautiful cathedral. Take time to just sit, immerse yourself in old world beauty and don't forget to say a prayer!

By mauinokaoi1973 |

this is an amazing place, to bad it isnt really used much, architecture is amazing, location is so so though

By NewarkTraveler1949 |

For those who like an adventure in architecture with some spiritual aspects, take a break and visit this place. The off-hours entrance is from Ridge Street where there is a person with brochures and any information you want. Go for a stroll inside and be mesmerized by a church that started construction in the 19th century and finished in the mid-20th century. This place beats St. Patrick's any day. Go inside the park and get a view of the cathedral from across the lake inside Branch Brook Park with fountains going and restored landscaping in the foreground...

By Teddy H |

It was built with the donation from the early Italian immigrants. Hence it matches the best they had in Europe. You have to walk around the inside to appreciate every little details. I've seen enough churches, basilicas but this is one the of the best....and it's in our back yard!

By KisssableKate |

What an amazingly beautiful church. Boyfriend & I did not go inside, but the view from outside took our breath away. If you appreciate works of art, this masterpiece will leave you speechless~~~~~Phenomenal Architecture!!!

By vaev123 |

If you enjoy architecture, then this attraction is for you. The church is amazing on the outside; so much detail on the doors. The inside is even grander and even more detailed. Not only are you surrounded by stained glass windows depicting many saints, there are also reliefs and mosaics. Don't be surprised to see stained glass in the restrooms too! A small elevator takes you to the third floor, up to the choir loft. From there you get a better overall view of the church and the altar, not to mentione the huge organ. I went on a Friday before noon, no one was there. It was a serene place.

By Marina C |

If you can't get to Europe or even St. Patrick's Cathedral to take in gothic architecture, just go to Newark. Even if you're not Catholic, this beautiful cathedral is worth checking out.

By Ben G |

Beautiful French Gothic architecture. Their Sunday service at noon has a full choir (September through May). Even if you're not Catholic, you need to hear it.

By papasmurf5069 |

The building is magnificent. The stone work, the wood work, the stained glass are as fine as any I've seen in Europe or Mexico. When the choir is singing it is truly a wonderful spiritual event. There are choral, organ and other music presentations throughout the year. The Christmas Carol Sing Along is fantastic. The finale combines the choir, orchestra and congregation singing Silent Night in nothing but candlelight. Magical.

By Ankur Jagetiya |

I visited this place with my family and son. Cherry Blossom was at its fullest and the nature was at its best at this time. Had a great time at this place and enjoyed a lot.

By Orlando M |

This church is beautiful and huge, this is a must see if you are in the Newark Area, Parking is a challenge in the area though.

By jhatwo |

an awesome structure,,,,sure to amaze all visitors ,it was just across the street from my high school, but you never saw it as common nor ordinary. a perfect setting for weddings

By kittenfaye |

I flew into Newark on business and decided to do something for me. I always wanted to see the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Just like anywhere you travel in the world that has a beautiful remembrance with unimaginable architecture it may be in an area that is not a brand new neighborhood. I felt and was perfectly safe there. This is well worth your time to go view and to create a forever memory for yourself. Thankful that I went.

By lurdes8 |

Even more beautiful than Saint Patrick in NYC. Beautiful rose window and other stained glass. Stay for noon mass on Sunday and listen to the choir. They are great.

By kagraceb |

It''s really really beautiful inside. The outside has,so much detail including the doors. But when you go in your jaw will drop.

By spdar0ca |

The basilica is so beautiful and even more so at Christmas. The architecture and art work are unparalleled and surprise a lot of visitors who would never think they would find such an amazing basilica in Newark.

By ssg47 |

I grew up in the next town over and came here a few times as a kid. Recently returned for Christmas Eve service. The Basilica was lit up at night and very impressive. There were poinsettias and wreaths all around. The choir sang. The acoustics were beautiful. I spent more time gazing at the architecture than I did paying attention to the service, wondering how the heck could they build something so beautiful way back when. It truly is an architectural marvel. I didn't know they had tours and concerts, so thank you to those of you that posted that information. There was plenty of police in the area near the parking lots so we felt safe leaving the car and walking to the Basilica. This building is truly spectacular.

By csilva42017 |

You will be so surprised to drive though Newark and find this jewel. It is just breath taking. I love going in the spring when the flowers are in bloom and the trees are popping.

By Dean V |

Great sight to see. The building and craft that would have went into this building is incredible to see. We walked from the prudential center area just to see it and it was worth the walk.

By OnAir826161 |

One beautiful memorable Sacred Heart Cathedral, the fifth-largest cathedral in North America, is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark.

By taurus044 |

What a way to spend Christmas Eve! The basilica is stunningly beautiful. I'm in awe of all the architectural details in every nook and cranny. St. Patrick's Cathedral in NYC is magnificent, but this takes my breathe away. The choir puts the icing on the cake during the midnight mass. They all have angelic singing voices.

I travel 20 minutes to attend this mass every year and it is a must-do! It will truly fill your heart with the spirit of Christmas. It starts at 10 pm, where the choir sings for approximately one before mass begins.

By larigot |

This cathedral, the fifth largest in the US, will make you feel as if you'd caught a plane to France. There are so many beautiful stained glass windows, statues and carvings that you should plan to spend a fair amount of time in the basilica. The organ, one of the finest on the East Coast, is used for masses and concerts. On some Wednesdays at Noon, there is an organ recital, followed by a guided tour of the building. Call or check the website for the specifics.

By Richard W |

This is one of the most beautiful churches in Newark. I was there for a Christmas concert last December and had a wonderful time. Close to Branch Brook Park, the neighborhood isn't the best, but it was good enough for the Pope to visit a few years back. Beautiful architecture.

By jbmathusek |

I took a friend to the Cathedral recently because he had never been here and is a Catholic. I was so impressed by the size and beauty. I am not Catholic but I was very impressed.

By Nyctransit2013 |

It’s so amazing .... you can approach the from when is close and take pictures and videos always parking available safe neighborhood the state police station on the corner and is next to Branch Brooke park

By elcentro1 |

it is one of the nicest Catholic diocesan cathedrals that I have ever been to, and I have been to several Catholic diocesan cathedrals here in the US. Massive and absolutely beautiful.

By D8571YFmargaretb |

The cathedral is beautiful the best ever in and out back in 93 when Pope John Paul II came to Newark.NJ took my children to see him The most exciting experience for me and my children

By joseph o |

A GREAT EXAMPLE OF FINE church architecture better than most basilicas safe place to visit you will be glad you stopped and took the time to visit

By Robert C |

As beautiful a church as you'll find anywhere. Particular favorites: (a) the two front towers are rotated 45% (a very unusual element; (b) the brass front doors have Old Testament scenes and New Testament evangelists; (c) the Stations of the Cross are made of mosaics and are beautiful. We caught the organist practicing for a recital. My oh my, how beautiful.

By wajtv |

It is hard to believe that such a wonderful place of worship has survived all the violence that Newark has suffered.

By Theleitners |

Remember when my families law firm was in the city in the 50's. A destination then and now. truly old school

By somersetequipmen2018 |

We have attended the candle light Christmas service here, as well as, the Messiah. It is a lovely venue, and the sound is incredible. A perfect spot to experience religous music.

By papasmurf5069 |

One of the most ornate and beautiful churches in the world. If you can make it to one of the annual Christmas Carol sing along events you will not be disappointed. Make a day of it by attending mass then lunch at one of the many great Ironbound restaurants.

By RPC633 |

I was a tour guide here for many years and, in my humble opinion, its exterior is far more beautiful than S. Patrick's Cathedral, in NYC. The faƧade of the cathedral is flanked by 2 soring rectangular bell towers on either side of the front, with the towers slightly "turned in" as if they're looking at each other. A huge piazza (plaza) is in front of the cathedral, which is laid out in the form of a Latin cross, e.g., "t" (i.e., the long, vertical "beam", known as the nave, is where the people sit and is much longer than the horizontal transepts (or arms) of the cathedral. It's one of America's largest cathedrals, measuring 365 feet in length (btw, a football field is only 160 feet long). The interior is filled with gorgeous stained glass windows, marble and wood-carved statutes, and an altar cross whose corpus (i.e., body of Christ) is carved from a block of light pink Italian marble and is nearly life size. The rose window over the door is 36 feet in diameter, the 2nd largest rose window in the western hemisphere. Remember to visit the side chapels, which honor different ethic groups (and their saints) who built the cathedral -- one chapel each for the Irish, Italians, Germans, eastern Europeans (Poles, Czechs, etc.), and newcomers to our shores (Asian and Hispanic Americans). Trust me: This cathedral is far more beautiful than Notre Dame in Paris. There is a tour on the 1st Sunday of each month, after the noon mass. If you visit on a Sunday from mid-Sept. until early June, the cathedral's superb choir always sings at the noon mass. Attend the service -- even if you aren't Catholic, but enjoy great choral singing - and then explore the church. Take the elevator (at back of church) to get a great 3rd floor photo of the interior -- the ceiling is 10 stories high!

By NJWil |

The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart is a fine example of a Gothic-style cathedral, but you don't have to go to France to experience this magnificent architecture, just go to Newark! The cathedral is, unquestionably, the most beautiful building in Newark, and is a familiar aspect of the Newark skyline (you can see the cathedral from some distance, for example, from the Belleville Turnpike in the Meadowlands or from the Passaic River drawbridge on Rte. 280). Besides offering a beautiful venue for Masses, the cathedral also hosts cultural events such as concerts. While visiting Newark, consider also its really nice museum and perhaps lunch or dinner at the Spanish Tavern in Ironbound section.

By micp1274 |

You want old world Europena cathedral charm, you found right here in Newark. The seat of the local diocese. Visited by John Paul II. Nest to Branch Brook Park, very scenic photo spot.

By s1jag |

I have visited cathedrals all over Europe and Sacred Heart, although quite a bit newer than most is as beautiful as most. It is the third largest in the US and is absolutely breathtaking in its grandeur. Plus, it is right on the edge of famous Branch Brook park of cherry tree fame. Allow at least an hour to really take it in. If the main doors are locked, go to the back on the park side to get in.

By stoliman |

I was so pleasantly surprised with the beauty of this cathedral. If you have a chance it is worth your while to experience this

By ChALUTCH |

More people need to find out about this cathedral. When we travel we usually visit a famous cathedral in a big city, but we had never been to this one ,right in our backyard.Beautiful in every detail, huge, with several altars, this is a masterpiece.

By John Vincent D |

Spectacular architecture and spiritually moving place. You would never expect to find this where it is located. Contrary to what others have said I did not find the neighborhood unsafe. It is just not in a rich area. It is in a working class residential area adjacent to the beautiful Branch Brook Park.

By Jonathan W |

Inspiring! A masterpiece of history. Its exquisite external beauty is complemented by a a majestic interior seamlessly adorned with meaning. There is ample parking space. Across a lake, it overlooks Branch Park which is ample dotted with many cherry trees the bloom of which is celebrated yearly by tourists and locals.

By Jose Lejin P J |

Beautiful architecture. Nice interiors and ambience. It has a large pipe organ. Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart is the seat of the Archdiocese of Newark. Cathedral Basilica holds concerts open to the public throughout the year. Good parking space.

By Stefano |

Just attended a wedding here. The most beautiful cathedral I have seen in the US. Absolutely spectacular.

By Talia M |

This cathedral is a historical landmark and one of the most beautiful churches I have been to. Even if you are not interested in attending a mass it is worth going to marvel at the architecture and detail.

By Kathleen B |

Beautiful, very large church with 3 gorgeous rose windows. We were there to hear the organist explain the huge pipe organ (over 9000 pipes), its history, how it works, how they maintain it, and listen to a piece he played. It was part of an organized tour, so not sure how often available, but it must be magnificent to go to Mass there.

By eatlocal1ofakind |

What a beautiful spiritual place. Tip: enter through the office doors since main entry doors are closed. Pay attention to the saints represented. they are patron saints of the countries citizens who settled Newark in the 19th and 20th centuries.

By SharonNDanny |

If you want to enter for religious or spiritual reasons, or want to capture the great architectural features of the Cathedral, it has many different features to choose from.

By animal9800 |

If you have been to Europe and seen the amazing Cathedrals, then that gives you an idea of how crazy beautiful this Cathedral is. Highly recommend a visit! Unfortunately the area of Newark where the Cathedral is so-so, but there is ample street parking right next to the chuch and a church lot. All doors are locked, so need to go to the rectory with the green awning to gain entry. Most beautiful church I have seen in this country.

By TwavelingTweedies |

I went on a tour several years ago and was greatly surprised at this gem in Newark - very interesting and reminded me of some of the great Cathedrals I had visited in Europe.

By Frank T P |

This Basilica is magnificent. The main altar is spectacular. You cannot help but feel at peace when you walk into this holy place. I would recommend it to anyone.

By Paul P |

You don't have to be Catholic - or even religious - to visit (we aren't). This is the kind of cathedral you go to Europe to see, but it's right here in Newark with easy parking and a great location next to the beautiful (especially in spring) Branch Brook Park. It's worth visiting.

By Ashley I |

This church is amazingly beautiful, the stained glass and high ceilings had us in awe.
We visited the church early on a Saturday morning. Only 1 door was unlocked which lead to the main office, we asked if we were allowed to look around and they happily said yes. We walked all around the church (which was completely quiet and empty) and took pictures. It is completely free to walk around and take pictures, but we placed money into the offerings box at the exit.

By Trini Traveler |

In all my years traveling to New Jersey, I never knew about the Basilica. I was completely blown away when I arrived and saw this majestic building rising in front of me. The Basilica has a number of small chapels surrounding the main altar with daily Mass said at 7:00AM in the Lady Chapel directly behind the Main Altar.
The Parishioners at the morning Mass are friendly and welcoming. This church is so suitable for a quiet private prayer. I also enjoyed the diversity of the Priests who said Mass each morning. You can catch the number 41 bus from Broad Street directly to the Basilica.

By pertyle |

A beautiful huge popular church. Does look like St. Patrick's Cathedral in NYC.
Been there a few times. Very nice.

By Rest-and-Romance |

We met the kindest people here, both their desk staff and their priests! We made friends with one of the priests and he was exceptionally kind to show us some locked areas (choir room and the baptismal). My husband is a reverend, so this was such a valuable experience for us. This place is uniquely beautiful and you can feel the presence of God there. Every detail is in consideration of the reverence of God.

By Sunshine34500 |

Attended a wedding, as regal as can be and it was magestic from start to finish. Guests were in awe of its’ beauty, stained glass windows, choir and clergy service. Not to be missed are the paintings, wall tapestries and historic artifacts. Tours are allowed, but you need to call ahead.

By newjerseyvagabonds |

The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart rivals any of the hundreds of cathedrals we have seen throughout Europe. Begun in the late 1800s it was completed in the 1950s. The two rose windows (stained glass) are breathtaking as is the exquisite workmanship both inside the building and out. Call to find out what hours the building is open. 973-484-4600. We happened to be there just before a wedding and, hearing the musicians warm up gave an idea of the incredible acoustics. There are concerts from time to time so go to their website for more information. www.cathedralbasilica.org.

By aldonewark |

Majestic, Grandiose on par with the best in Europe and the best part is that is here in Newark, New Jersey, USA.

By AREEN7 |

A peaceful place to walk quietly and take in the draw dropping beauty. No tripods or big camera lenses alowed. Try to visit on a bright sunny day so the stained glass window colors "pop".

By hvcriq |

We went to the cathedral during cherry blossom time. We attended the noon-time concert series. The concerts are for about an hour and are quite delightful. Tours are given following the noon time concerts. An informative tour is given by the pastor, and you have the freedom to explore the cathedral at your leisure afterward. Great historic information about the cathedral.
