One of the best views in Sedona

By Relish The World |

Beautiful hike, definitely worth the effort. Wonderful views at the top. Make sure to arrive early in order to capture those coveted parking spots. We got there at 8:15am on a cold end of November morning and there were only a few spots remaining. I would classify it as moderately difficult. There are so many people around, that one feels a sense of comfort if something would go wrong, as the people we met were friendly and very encouraging. Make sure to wear hiking shoes / boots, though half of the people were just wearing running shoes, and watching them slipping and sliding gave me the heebi jeebies haha. That's the kind of excitement I don't need. Have fun!

Go To The Ledge

By familyis4ever |

I’m no hiker. This was my first real climb. It was daunting at first, but easy and so worth it. When you get to the top, there is a photo op you’ll see people taking. The ledge is much wider than it seems and wasn’t near as scary as watching others do it. Do it,

By land and air

By Baileyh0 |

Beautiful. Can be seen from several area's.Helicopter,Holy Cross Chapel. Even the road. Really shows the color changes in the rock

Amazing Hike!

By #lifetravels |

You must do the hike! Very satisfying, medium difficulty in some areas. I would avoid holiday peak periods though. We had trouble finding parking which delayed our day's schedule.

Beautiful sunset for a quick yet difficult hike

By RainyReverie |

A fun hike full of scrambles and steep climbs. The sunset is gorgeous with the famous ledge for a one-of-a-kind photo op. Be sure to leave some time for the way down otherwise it’s hard to slide down in the dark! It’s doable but just have to take your time.

Unbelievable!

By Donald S |

What a fantastic view. You see the same roc formations from a different angle and you’re looking at a whole new view. This is a must see area.

Beautiful vistas near the TOP of this beautiful Rock

By Fred F |

We enjoyed the energetic hike/climb up Cathedral Rock. The views are breathtaking as a rain storm was visible in the distance creating beautiful columns of light accenting the nearby formations. Beautiful. We were about to stop about 1/2 way up when a crevasse required a few special techniques to get up it. A friendly fellow hiker/climber encouraged us to continue on up the rock. We Did and arrived at the top with welcoming cheers from our new friend, congratulating us on our success. This is not a hike for the faint at heart, although I don't believe there was significant danger. Just a little scary. The climb down was a Lot Easier and faster ...

Beauty of the Rocks

By Robert H |

Hike, go out and enjoy this place. Go early. Take water and snacks. Be cautious when climbing on the rocks. Young kids need to be watched as they walk along the path. From moderate to hard hiking areas. Wear good hiking shoes and appropriate clothing.

incredible site

By LightPacker777200 |

Just spectacular views, it must be seen, pictures dont do it justice. So you can drive by and take pics, drive to the location get out and take pics, or hike the trail and get up close and personal. If your hiking, be prepared! this is not a casual hike, and has many very steep areas. I would avoid hiking later in the day, you will want every bit of light for this challenging hike.
That said... Dont miss this location. It's worth the time, even to just walk around and take in the views

Amazing, but we prefer other trails

By cepeterman |

First off, it’s a Sedona hike/climb, so the views are spectacular. That said, our expectations were probably too high, which left us a bit disappointed. One, it was 50/50 hike/climb, and we prefer more hike. Two, there were lots of visitors, which adds to noise, delays, and yes, litter. Three, it was relatively close to the road and new homes (spectacular themselves), so we didn’t get that “lost in nature” feeling. Fourth, I paid $5 for parking on-line, but didn’t need to because parking was closed and we had to take a free shuttle from a remote lot. No big deal - happy to make a donation. Fifth, we were looking for some kind of a vortex feeling but never found it. Again, it was spectacular, but quite a few other Sedona trails have been far more enjoyable for us.

Great Sunrise Hike in Sedona. Short but Strenous.

By TravelingSoccerLoon |

Great hike. Relatively short hike but pretty strenuous with lots of rock scrambling and near vertical sections. Amazing views along the way and at the top. Anyone who is in at least moderate shape and wearing good shoes can do this. Took me about 35 minutes to reach the top. Lots of work going up but somewhat scarier coming down. No true trail but the climb is well marked with large rock cairns to guide you along. I arrived about 20 minutes before sunrise. Only 1 other car in the lot and I felt like I was the only one on the trail which made the experience. Many more people making the climb up as I was descending shortly after sunrise.

Never seizes to amaze

By 54tomas |

We took a couple trails and managed to get our workout and more. Well maintained trails and the weather was just wonderful. Although the site was busy rarely ran into a human, did see a couple of mule deer.

Incredible!

By jslukens |

A picturesque, somewhat challenging hike. The location is beautiful and the view at the top is spectacular! We would hike it again!!

Good hike but takes longer than alltrails app suggests

By Mreareus |

From Yavapai vista parking ( parking permit required) take hermits trail a short way to templeton that will take you to amazing views. Many suggest doing the loop back, EasyBreezy but its an intermediate not easy and mostly through forest. In retrospect i would take templeton back and get the views that way. Take plenty of water even with air temperature of only 60, the direct sun gets you feeling much hotter. I’m slow due to knees, took me 4 hours

Beautiful hike and worth it

By Ramesh A |

The Cathedral Rock Trailhead was one of the beautiful nice hikes we did in Sedona. The parking lot was full do we used the shuttle bus, probably a mile away. There are plenty of shuttle busses running. There were a lot of trail options. Remember to pack water bottles and get hiking shoes. We did the easy breezy trail about an hour and a half. It was worth the hike, which took us through a lot of scenery. There were lots of places to take pictures, and everyone enjoyed the hike and calmness once you got closer. If you want to have a very short 15-minute hike, just climb stairs as you exit the shuttle bus.

Don't miss this place. You probably need at minimum 2 hours to enjoy this place.

Amazing views!

By NCRogers |

Gorgeous site. Challenging and the day we went was very windy which made being at the top quite scary. But, totally worth it at any time, but especially sunset. The trail is well marked by rock stacks so you don't get lost getting to the overlook.

Cathedral rock trail scary but fun

By ProctorParquette |

Parking on a Wednesday was easy but we noticed the trail head parking lot was closed later in the week.

Trail to the top started steep and just got steeper. Towards the end we were scrambling straight up with few hand holds and steep drops. Not for the faint of heart!!! We came down those parts on our butts! I don’t think hiking poles would have helped. You needed your hands to grab the rocks!

That said the thrill of bouldering to the top and seeing the view was worth it.

We did this our first day in Sedona and could feel the effects of the elevation on our lungs.

Amazing

By ebrocklesby |

Travel the upper red rock loop rd and went into Crescent moon ranch. Easy walk to the base of cathedral rock. Many people on a vortex there. Beautiful spot for a picinc

always pretty

By Gary |

Been here about 11 times, always amazing view and flowers. Park at the top if you dont want the steep walk.

Access through the park off 89A!

By Rich M |

This is best reached by driving into the park on the west side, as opposed to the south side that the signs point you to near Bell Rock. Through the park you need to cross the creek, which is usually easy, but why bother when you can hang out in the shade next to the creek, it is a gorgeous energy and within range of the "rock" itself.

Worth every step!

By Jenn H |

Used Alltrails since TH's are packed as soon as the sun came up. The alternative routes to get there are worth the extra steps.

Hard but worth every minute!

By EBtravelerNj |

We got there early because everyone kept telling us the parking was going to be a problem. I guess because of the time of the year we had no problem. The hike was fantastic but not for inexperienced hikers. Be sure to bring plenty of water and have sturdy hiking shoes. The entire hike up is rigorous. There’s a few spots where you have to scramble and use hands and feet to get up. Take your time and you will get to the top for magnificent views. There are plenty of places to stop along the way so that you could catch your breath and all the other hikers were incredibly friendly and in the same boat as you. It’s a relatively short hike However you need to be able to take your time. We did it in three hours. But it was only about a mile and a half.

Great hike with teenagers

By FjordFan |

Awesome family hike with teenagers. It’s really more rock scrambling than a hike, which the kids loved. Took us a half hour to get to the top and a half hour to get back down. But definitely spend time at the top— continue past the “end of trail” sign to the left to get even higher for some amazing views. Then go back to the right to get that iconic photo on the ledge.

BEWARE OF CROWDS - Go early!

By MarkFL-USA |

It was spectacular, but we couldn't park and had to leave. On the way back to the main road, the police had actually closed off the area. This was around 10AM. You need to go early! We'll try again when it's not holiday season.

Beautiful

By NeilAA123 |

Awesome. Fabulous views. Well marked and maintained trails. Good for easy/medium hiking. Really enjoyed visiting this spot.

Amazing View

By Amanda P |

Amazing views. Worth the climb. Do not expect to find parking close by, we gave up and settled for the shuttle bus which ran consistently,

See it from Red Rocks State Park

By Travelers Voice |

Red Rock State Park has a very nice view of Cathedral Rock from along the Javelina trail. The trail is accessible from the visitor center. Access to the park is $7 per person, 8-5pm.

Challenging and rewarding

By Mackenzie D |

Going in to this we had no clue what was in front of us. With that being said everything was worth it. Good traction shoes definitely recommend but multiple people wore tennis shoes too. It’s more of a climb rather than a hike but it’s again so rewarding

Don't Miss This Hike!

By erickson2 |

I traveled to Sedona for a short hiking trip and chose Cathedral Rock as a day hike. Fun rock scramble up! Would recommend hiking shoes with good grip! Great photo opportunity near the top with sweeping vistas! Bus shuttle service to the trailhead was helpful and no worries about finding a parking spot.

Enjoyable Hike!

By PhlegmMaster |

Parking for the Cathedral Rock Trailhead is just off Back O Beyond Rd. It's a moderately challenging hike, perhaps a bit tricky because there are points where the rocks are pretty smooth, and if you are not careful, you could easily slip and fall. There are also some parts where you will be going up (and then coming back down) at a steep angle, so make sure you have shoes with good traction, or some quality hiking boots.

Enjoy the exercise & the fabulous views!

The View

By Ted Luehs |

What a view for a church setting. Off the highway about a mile. Parking at three different levels. Trails nearby.

Not to be missed

By Jose KN |

Totally worth it. Went to the top and back in around 1hr. Appropriate shoes make all the difference. Going up easier than coming down. The view is fantastic, the journey is fun, very rock.

Best short hike

By jgosset |

Best views ever!
Short but strenuous with amazing payoff
Once at the top spend time exploring in between the spires, find the hidden cave.

OK. So we saw it.

By Daniel M |

Nice. So you're here. Might as well go see. Many beautiful areas and extra time so it is better than sitting in a bar.

Beautiful spot. Don't miss.

By mikehayscounseling |

Beautiful, but do this at sunset. The hike doesn't take long, maybe 40-50 minutes with a huge payoff at the end. The climb is not hard, but there are some steep, slick boulders to traverse. There are not any spots for those who are afraid of heights to worry about. Make plans to linger at the top. Its a great contemplative spot. There was a wedding going on when we were up there, if that says anything. There is a ledge to walk out on (to your right as you reach the lookout) that looks more precarious than it is, and there are some rocks that you can scale(behind you as you reach the lookout) that are also less treacherous than they look from a distance. Both make for great pictures. This is a great family hike.

So pretty

By mdgipsy |

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a bad hike in Sedona. Get there early enough to be able to find parking !

Wow, what a hike!!

By Meli |

I read a lot of reviews and some reviews talked about passages where you had to use your hands to climb and I confirm!!
You don't have a rope so we make do as best we can, hands for the climb and the seated version for the descent - so take good shorts/pants😉
Very little space in the parking lot even at 7:30 we are extremely lucky to have a place: come very early because the path is popular and there is no shade.
No water point for your water bottles so take a good quantity because you attack the climb and come back down the same way.
Your reward will be the view from both sides of the mountainside!!
I do not recommend it for children who are too young or for parents carrying children, the risk of slipping is great and I have seen many couples turn around.

Not Fantastic

By tbl152 |

Cathedral rock trail is really for beginner hikers who are like my self, and out of shape. It’s very short and kinda surprising when you get the the end, you’re like “this is it”? Don’t get me wrong, the views are of course, fabulous but it’s not all the cracked up that it was supposeD to be.

Amazing Hike

By teniseetraveler |

We took a morning hike on the Secret Slickrock Trail. it was just breathtaking! The views were just amazing!

Don't miss this hike!

By washington_wahine |

a fun, scenic hike. Don't let the crack stop you - if this senior citizen can do it, so can you! views from the top are rewarding. Go super early in the morning - we went just before dawn - and you will not only get parking but will also skip the (unmasked) crowds.

So Many Ways to See the Cathedral

By procmom |

We hiked a trail near the high school and were able to view this unique place and enjoyed the wide view. Then we drove down into the local neighborhood and saw an even better view, which I know the local community is not to fond of-but worth the drive and -I wish the development around the rock would stop.

Awesome hike!

By Trish |

We started at the Baldwin trailhead and did Cathedral Rock from there. It’s was a major challenge in the 95 degree heat and totally worth it! A stop at the creek for a swim on the way back made it a perfect day.

Beautiful view but is a challenging hike!

By Orlandolawyer |

This hike was fun and the views are unmatched but it is challenging! I looked at many blogs that listed this as a family hike! It is and my teens loved it BUT you are using handholds and footholds and climbing in small crevices to get up! I made it but it was a lot tougher than I expected. I had to crawl slide down some rocks on the way down!

In the end the view is worth it! Stunning!

Great hike

By Dmd5190 |

Great hike but pretty strenuous in spots! Lots of scrambling type climbing. Beautiful views all around! It’s worth it to go all the way to the top even though there are a few tough spots along the way. Trekking poles really help with the hike-especially going down! Highly recommend this hike!

Cathedral Rock Vistas

By TahoegpSA |

Originally planned to hike only to the first level; then, we were captured by the beauty all around and continued on. Beautiful area with good trail signage. Remember to get the parking pass from the kiosk at the parking lot and come early; as the lot fills fast.

Cathedral Rock by Darren Chaker

By DarrenChaker_CA |

Gorgeous views and an easy hike for many parts of Cathedral Rock in Sedona. The views are majestic and sunsets never duplicate themselves but are always gorgeous. Safe travels to all, Darren Chaker.

Cathedral Rock is beautiful

By cindyp_nola |

The hike to the top of Cathedral Rock in Yavapai County is very strenuous. It's a beautiful place, but very hard to hike to.

Beauty and the Scramble

By Laura Daray |

While AllTrails rated this hike as moderate, I would say it’s sorta moderate but quite intense in some parts - I don’t feel some reviewers have articulated the rock scrambling involved for this hike. It can be somewhat frightening, especially the middle very steep part. So, heads up is what I’m saying, and be prepared (proper hiking shoes) for rock scrambling. The view at the end is certainly worth it, and great news, the path down comes much easier than up!

Cool to see irl

By tavaroo |

One of my favorite things in the park. You're not allowed to take dogs however so if you're traveling with them just be aware.

What a view

By RonT53 |

The view is breathtaking. I have not seen so many beautiful mountains and valleys in my life. I suggest anyone coming this way to detour and go through Sedona and drive through some of the canyons all the way up to Flagstaff. It is unbelievable.

It's a hike

By Wendy D |

Well worth the hike. The views are amazing. It's a ways up and some parts are a little tough but in the end its beautiful!

Awe-Inspiring Views!

By Kind Traveler |

We spent time at Cathedral Rock two evenings in a row. The sunsets were outstanding, as were the star displays. It it conveniently located close to town, but far enough out to enjoy dark skies and quiet at night, Cathedral Rock is stunning and the photos don't do it justice.

Not as hard they say...

By Eric P |

Short uphill climb. Great way to take in a sun set or sunrise because you don't have much to travel to get to your destination.

When you reach the sign that says "End Trail," look to your left. If you walk all the way to your left and stay to the right you will find some more opportunities for exploration.

A fun short up hill climb will lead you to some possibilities and twisted trees were the energy is more dense if you're able to tap into it.

If you choose this path, it does have the potential to circle back around. Explore and have fun.

Trek to Cathedral Rock Sedona

By Gajinder |

Trek to the Cathedral Rock must form part of your itinerary while visiting Sedona. The start point of the trail is about 20 minutes drive from downtown with a parking area which may get crowded on the weekends. The trail is about a mile and a quarter long along a rocky track with little or no vegetation. The track is not maintained well and is very steep at places requiring a certain degree of physical fitness and stamina. Do ensure to wear proper comfortable clothing and training/hiking shoes as there is possibility of slipping on the rocks. Also carry water and some eatables as you are definitely going to feel thirsty and hungry. The entire trail offers beautiful scenic spots with wonderful views but the icing on the cake is the top of the trail which is a saddle-like feature offering the most amazing valley views on the sides. One of the best highlights of my trip to Arizona.

Thunderstruck

By TrMarek |

Cathedrals are religious works of art & this is the outdoor equivalent. This was our first of three hikes & it had everything we are looking for in a hike: relatively short (1 hour up, 45 min down), great views all the way up, diverse terrain (some rock climbing) & summit with character. The gigantic rock pillars make it feel like your in the middle of some kind of Cathedral from a Thor movie! Wish we had more time to enjoy the view but thunder & lightning forced us to descend. Maybe Thor was there after all? Don't forget to purchase your $5 parking pass and place it on your dashboard of your car.

Sedona, Arizona takes my breath away

By RDH2017 |

Words cannot express the beauty of this wonderful masterpiece. The best way to describe it is that it looks like the Grand Canyon turned upside down. Sedona has some amazing rock formations. Cathedral Rock is probably one of the most well known for its awesome details. Take a trip to Sedona; you will not regret it.

Incredible!

By Dawn A |

Cathedral Rock was my absolute favorite hike/climb! There are a few tough spots but, totally worth it! The views are simply breathtaking!
Get there VERY early ( by 7:00am or earlier) if you don’t want to wait for parking. Plus, if you get there super early, you will see an amazing sunrise!

Beautiful

By Tricia K |

Amazing hiking here!! We went back twice and saw so many different things here! It is so pretty and the view from the top cannot be beat! So worth it!

Spectacular at sunrise

By michael w |

Arrive early! Only on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday is the road open during the day. I arrived at 6:00 AM and very few spaces were left in the first parking lot. I started hike at 6:30 and all parking spaces were full. You must buy parking permit at trailhead with credit card. Wear your stickiest boots as years of hikers have polished the rocks. Sticks are useless going up but if you no longer have the reactions you had at 25 they may save your life coming down. Blue jeans may be best as some parts require a knee down to keep from taking one step forward and sliding two steps back. Not a hard climb, not technical but if you are a low lander expect some heavy breathing. If height bothers you this probably is not your climb. Took me 30 minutes to ‘trail end’ sign but I did stop 10 minutes to let yammering women get out of ear shot. NOTE that best views are to the left of the ‘end’ sign. Go left and follow the lesser trail to the right of the rock tower. Then find another uphill scramble. If your lucky you will not have to listen to women discussing probiotics and skin hydration there. Coming down expect a little butt slide time here and there and you will be glad to have sticks if you are my age, 74. Upon return peeps will be begging for your parking spot.

Arrive Early

By rkitek |

After several attempts and finding a full parking lot, we arrived at 5:00am and were the first in the lot. If you want to guarantee yourself a spot, arrive before 6:00 am. By 6:30am, the lot will be full. Arrive in time so you can watch the sunrise from the high on the rock.

Thrilling View at the Top

By Wayfarer247 |

Amazing view at the top! This is a steep hike in some areas, especially at "the crack". The crack is a steep scramble up a small portion of the trail. It's doable if you are in decent shape.

The parking situation is really a shame. There are only two small lots at the trail head which only hold about 15-20 cars each. You need to get there around 7 am on the weekends to park with out waiting. Sometimes there is a police officer that blocks the entrance because the lot hits capacity quickly and the neighborhood is nearby.

They really need better parking and infrastructure to support the popular demand among hikers.

POV of a person with a fear of heights

By Khim Y |

We wanted to go to Bell Rock and just do the easy hike around the base. However, after circling the parking lot a few times and having no luck, we drove down the street just when a spot in the parking lot opened up at Cathedral, so we decided to heed the vortex and just go.

I could tell that some people really enjoy this hike, and logically I could even tell you why - it’s got a great view at the top, it’s relatively short, and you’d feel proud when you get to the top. But trust me - it’s not for everyone. As a non-athletic, short legged middle-Agee with a fear of heights, that climb was most certainly not worth it for me. I made it to the top, and made it down again without much mishaps, but there were many times on the way up that I thought not only was I not going to make it to the top, I would never see my family again. I hated the smooth rocks at an incline that some people could just walk on while I had to climb on all fours with nothing to hold on to. I hated every moment of it, even when I got to the top. I didn’t even enjoy the scenery at the top at all because I was so scared. I did Devil’s Bridge the day before and that was a piece of cake compared to this.

Most hikers/climbers were young adults, though I saw older children, older adults, and some dogs too. I think the hike won’t be bad as long as you don’t have a fear of heights, but if you do, then don’t do it. The view is why everybody loves this hike, and if you can’t enjoy the view from that height then you’d be better off enjoying it from the base of the mountain, where it’s equally stunning. And leave your precious energy to visit somewhere else like the Devil’s Bridge.

BTW, bring plenty of water. There’s a restroom at the trailhead, and caged cairns to mark the path along the way. Lots of people regret going up near the top, but it’s also too scary to turn back. Coming down was surprisingly easier than going up, you just slide down little by little and it’s a slow slide with lots of friction, which makes me think that it’ll be hard in the rain or when it’s slippery!

For parking, we got there at around 10:30 and there were a couple of spots available because I guess the first wave of people just left. There’s a nice man at the entrance letting cars in if the lot is not full. When we left at 2, the lot was full again.

Favorite 360' View from the top!

By Anya Cameron |

We absolutely LOVE Cathedral Rock and although it's a short hike, it is steep near the end, but totally doable & worth the climb!

Unique Challenging Hike

By Jeri Jo S |

Very unique hike. Quite difficult in some parts so wear good hiking shoes. Short but steep so a great work out. The views from the top are stunning.

Sunset at the top of Cathedral Rock

By Fei L |

I had so much fun watching sunset at the top. It was hardest climbing I have done: in some sections it is vertical and it was hard to find a place to hold feet up. There were so many nice people helped me up and down. A couple was taken photos up there as well. Yes, there were a lot of people up there.

Best/Coolest hike (climb) I've ever done.

By Michele K |

This hike is amazing! It is so beautiful at the top! Totally worth the anxiety some experience. It seems like more of a climb than a hike. One of group had to turn back because of height fears. Also, if you have any physical limitations, this hike is not for you. We got away with some tennis shoes, but make sure your shoes have good grips on them. I wanted to go back again the next day but we had a different hike scheduled. Great spot for a picture if you are brave enough to venture out on the ledge to the right side of the top of the trail.

Beautiful hike

By Lori |

Fairly easy hike. You can go as far as you are comfortable. Beautiful scenery at every level. A little hard to find, but worth it.

Nice hike on a cool morning

By Shari M |

We are not avid hikers but enjoyed the first part of the Baldwin trail. It is not well demarcated and ended up missing the loop to go back and ended up doing a more vigorous hike. The views dont change that much so chose not to go further. We got amazing photos from so many vantage points. We were only is Sedona for 2 days, and did other hikes which we enjoyed more (Fay Canyon, Boyton and Bell). It is very hot on the Baldwin trail,,, so either go very early or very late in the day,,,Bring water, hat and sunscreen. Hiking boots would be helpful too!

It’s a climb!

By Szy29 |

This is a must do, it’s a hard but short climb. Scrambling up boulders and climbing make-shift stairs. When you get to the top, take a left and keep climbing- spectacular views!

Good hike

By MXA70 |

Hard to find parking, steep, not too long but awesome views once you get to the top. Trail is good for the most part, rocky areas are hard and steep but so worth it. Beautiful

Fun

By Melissa H |

It was fun. I watched other people walk up a 90 degree vertical wall of rock in a section at a certain point. I couldn't do it. So what we ended up doing was taking the nice trail that circles around but doesn't go up. I'm not used to climbing. I like to hike but I didn't know I couldn't until I tried. I was to scared of sliding and getting hurt. I'm glad we went. We started our hike around 5am. There was very little light but was doable. There were already 4 cars there by 5am on Saturday.

Found the Hike Difficult

By Jim F |

AllTrails rated the hike moderate but my wife and I both stopped about half way up as the way up footed was dangerous we thought and if somebody above you lost footing it would not end well. Also you’re need to pay for parking and the parking lots are small with no street parking.

Inspiring

By Kate B |

Parking is extremely limited at the trailhead. Either get there very early or try and hit the mid day when the morning hikers are leaving. Beautiful hike. Gorgeous views.

Nice Views

By duranie |

We went sightseeing and on our list was the Cathedral Rock. We did not climb the rock but enjoyed the pretty views from a far. We got a really early start but I would suggest going in later in the morning when the sun is up high so that you can take in the colors, and the sun is moved to the side and not behind the rock.

Beautiful

By Jen |

Beautiful. Trail not too busy and plenty of parking around 10:30am. Great for pictures and is an short but somewhat steep hike.

If not staying in Sedona uptown or west do not bother. Will be impossible to park near trails.

By Flordeloto1989 |

We stayed in a hotel in Cottonwood and drove to Sedona on December 26 and 27. Was impossible to find parking near the trails. If you plan ahead rather get a hotel in Sedona within walking distance from a stop to catch a shuttle to the trails. Otherwise you may not get to see the most common attractions.

Views for days!

By theahartfamily |

We loved our hike here to see the beautiful rock and we were there on a clear day so we could see forever. Love this area.

Killer views, tricky hike

By Norb G |

Really fun hike, but definitely more challenging than described online. Views are worth getting to the top, but there are some climbing spots requiring appropriate footwear and stamina.

Amazing, Must do hike!

By HowIJourney |

First off, Google sent us to the wrong location. To get here, you need to navigate to Back O Beyond road, sitting on the roundabout across from the Sedona United Methodist Church. Once you are on Back O Beyond Road you will run into the trail head on your left hand side.

We visited here on a Monday morning at 7:30am and got the last parking spot in the lot, you cannot park on the road so getting a spot is key. Be sure to go early to avoid the crowd, sun and heat. This hike is less than a mile but quite challenging you will be going up and up, literally climbing rocks along the way. Do not attempt if you feel you aren't physically fit to climb up or are afraid of heights.

Make sure you wear hiking shoes or sneakers with good grip, I twisted my ankle on the way down because I was not wearing the correct shoes.

If you want a slightly easier hike take the "easy" route noted on the sign at the entrance (go left) and try to remember the way, it is quite easy to get lost going back down.

Once you get to the top, you will see a sign that says "end of hike", make a left and continue around and up the mountain a few extra feet for incredible, secluded views.

Cool views, too many people

By mngirl152 |

One of the most popular hikes in the Sedona area and it shows. We were on the trail by 6am and the parking lot was almost full. By the time we were on our way back down, we had to wait in certain spots. If you want solitude, this hike is not for you. Also, if you have issues with heights or climbing, this hike is not for you. A lot of the trail is fairly vertical and requires scrambling up and over rocks.

A Special Sedona Hike!

By HSpanbauer |

Super fun hike with easy, moderate and challenging portions including scrambling up crevasses and boulders. Fantastic views along the way and especially from the top! We parked in Baldwin Lot and took the Baldwin Trail to Templeton to Cathedral. Absolutely beautiful change of terrain as the Baldwin/Templeton trail follows Oak Creek for a while, and the deciduous trees are currently in full autumn splendor. Wear good hiking shoes for the scrambling at the top, and bring plenty of water and a snack. Fellow hikers were happy and encouraging. A very special place in Sedona.

Gorgeous

You can't miss this impressive formation that provides the backdrop for Sedona. This history and geology of Cathedral Rock is fascinating.

Vortex and Views

By Rebecca S |

An amazing hike and rock scramble worth the views. Said to have one of the strongest vortexes in the area - you decide! Moderate to difficult depending on your fitness level but do t recommend for people who can’t scramble and climb rocks with ease or small children / baby carriers.

Steep hike with stunning

By Melissa U |

Visited last week of October 2020.

Parking available at the start of trail. $5 for the day.
Arrive before 8a as lot gets full.
Hiking shoes with good grip highly recommended if you plan to hike up the rock.

The hike is an easy nature walk from the parking lot to the base of the rock. Then it’s a steep incline where you’re looking for grip on the face of the rock to pull yourself up at some points.

It’s challenging for someone who doesn’t hike often, but not perhaps not so much for experienced hikers. There were 5 year olds doing it, so...

Coming down is a bit scarier. I was on my butt in some places due to steep decline carefully sliding down instead of stepping.

There are white arrows in the sides of rocks to show you the way.

I recommend water IN backpacks instead of side pockets as our kept falling out the sides. Dress in layers. It was in the high 40s when we arrived. Mid 70s by the time we left.

Picturesque the whole way through. Sweeping vistas at the top.

Take this tip for young kids or those unsure!

By Sarah G |

It is worth everything to come experience as its one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen!! The experience and views cannot be described.

However, speaking as a mama and experiencing this firsthand, especially as my husband had to turn back less than halfway to take our little girl back, it is not suited for young kids or for any who are not physically prepared, its more of a vertical and extremely steep rock climb up to the top, some steps are present but few in comparison to the climbing portion in very rocky areas going straight up, the rocks are also smooth so sliding can happen.

Even with a child in a pack or something I still wouldn’t feel comfortable until their old enough to hold their own so to speak and can safely climb themselves because you also are going to have climb down the way you came and that takes some maneuvering and sliding through some spaces very steep as well. You’ll need to be hands free to safely do this I feel.

Its listed as moderate when I looked this hike up, I would say based on our experience it’s difficult and intense but with older kids and those physically able its worth your time to do this absolutely beautiful hike!!!

Last note its best to start early, sunrise I’m sure is beautiful, we got there around 7:15-7:30 and were done by about 9:00 in the morning! Parking fills up quickly!

Stunning Formation

By Kenneth S |

Cathedral Rock is one of the many extraordinary rock formations to be found in Sedona and the surrounding area. Only the most daring and accomplished climbers would seek to scale to rock, but the views from various places around the area give one a full appreciation of this beautiful formation. It draws its name from elements of the formation that resemble spires on a church or cathedral.

Truly Special Hike

By rdrees |

Please note: this is a pretty strenuous hike and is quite steep, with lots of clambering up fairly sheer surfaces with hands and feet. But the experience is exhilarating and the views are unmatched. This is a truly special hike.

Great climb

By B H |

This was the most difficult and challenging of all the hikes in oak creek, the views are unreal. This is a must climb/hike

Worth it but hard and little scary at times

By Chumkee A |

Amazing views at the top during sunset but this hike was hard for me! I am only 5ft and there was at least one time during the hike that I needed a stranger's hand to hoist me up while doing some "rock climbing" - there was just no way I would have gotten enough purchase on the rocks without someone's help based on how tall I am. I also took multiple breaks but it was worth it. While going up, I was nervous about how hard coming down would be but coming down was fairly easy - I scooted a few times but otherwise is was okay. Definitely worth it! Need a red rock pass to park in lot but not on the side of the street I don't believe.

One of our Favorite Hikes in Sedona

By Sun-Sand-Surf-Golf |

Definitely recommend adding this to your list of hikes, while you're in the Sedona area - it's worth the time and effort ... great views in all directions

Great Hiking and View

By lljjbb |

When exploring Sedona Valley, we knew this would be one of our hiking stops. Signs weren't the greatest on the trail, but we made our way up to the pillar red rock formations. Enjoyed this area very much and would recommend. If limited time, this is a key spot to at least visit to view.

Amazing

By Anne C |

Just a beautiful view and amazing rock formation. Don't miss it when visiting Sedona. You really can't miss it as you can see it from the road/paths.

Beautiful!

By Michelle R |

The energy was really strong for me I couldn't go the whole way back the trail. What I did see was amazing though.

Great hike!

By Rosie |

Lovely views at the top, go around to the left where the end of trail marker is for more great views. It is a challenging hike but not very long. Try the parking lot even if they say it’s full!

Incredible / can’t miss

By Alex V |

This is the most incredible hike to do around sunset. It’s not very long but is a fairly steep incline (partial scramble). Parking at the trailhead is slightly limited so be aware that early morning or later towards sunset might be the best times to go to guarantee a spot.

Very impressive hike and views

By wade a |

Very popular and crowded and for good reason... so fun and challenging.... great experience for those that stay near the base or those that reach the top and anywhere in between... back o beyond road is always full didn't even attempt getting in main lot. . We parked at Baldwin and took Templeton to get there.. lots of options

Worth the Effort!

By csmacht |

We enjoyed our hike to the top of Cathedral Rock! The hike was harder than we thought for this group of inexperienced ladies (age 18-62) but we were glad that we stuck with it. The hike is only 1 mile but parts of the hike are narrow with a steep incline. This hike is definitely doable and worth the effort. It was easier for the younger and more fit people in the group. There are places to stop and rest on the way up. The views at the top are worth it! We advise that you get a backpack water bottle because you will need your hands. Also pack a snack to enjoy at the top while you rest for the journey down. The hike was 45 minutes up, 30 minutes down plus extra time for rest stops. Be sure to use the bathroom before you go.

Breathtaking!

By Charleen W |

Took my breath away. Loved this. A top 5 experience! The colors are breathtaking!!! I'd recommend this for sure.

Gorgeous view

By abillings |

Well worth the hike! Fun scramble at times and plenty of spots to stop and take in the view. Parking can be a little tough at times, so get there early.

Strenous and tiring but worth it

By John |

The trip is worth it, take your time on the parts that are closer to vertical, water is must and maybe Gatorade. If you are out of shape or your idea of hiking is walking a packed trail you might have issues because you will be using muscles you've never used before, so make sure you stretch before, during and after the hike. The parking sucks, there is no way around that, get there early or be prepared to park on the road, unless you get extremely lucky. The view from the top is amazing though and well worth the effort

Great Energy

By Happy Lady |

Love visiting this site every time we come...great energy here! Expect that parking will be a mess so get there early or just at dinner time ... it's worth the effort!

Awesome Hike

By Christy M |

I’m 63 yrs old and tried this hike. I almost make it but it was well worth the try. I had a knee replacement 3 yrs ago and was just afraid that if I fell, I would regret going up higher. I was a .1 from the summit. Try it. It was a lot of fun.

Serene scene

By roopq |

Take a hike to this area. Great views from the slick rock area. Play in the river, soak up the sun and definitely take your camera!

Almost obligatory excursion to Sedona

By Aga1963 |

Excursion suitable for anyone who does not suffer from vertigo: the very well-marked path is just under 2 km long round trip with a difference in altitude of 227 metres.
Be careful when descending the section that passes over the rock (to be avoided if it is wet because it is slippery).
The view once you get to the top is very panoramic and scenic.
In summer it is advisable to leave at dawn both to avoid the heat of the following hours and because the car park located along Back O Beyond Road is not very large (be careful to display the Red Rock Pass or America The Beautiful Pass on the dashboard).

Get There Early!

By BillSong |

Even though it was off season, the first parking lot was full so we had to take a shuttle from a further lot to get to the trail. The hike up to the Cathedral rock started off relatively easy and there were lots of people on the trail. The total distance was less than 2 miles so I thought it would be a short hike but as we continued the climb, it got more and more difficult. Parts of the hike was more rock climbing than hiking. The crowds thinned out rather quickly as we ascended. Making it to the top felt like a real accomplishment and we were rewarded by a magnificent bird's eye view of the rock formations. I am used to hiking on the east coast and have never seen anything like this before. It was like being on another planet!

Very Gorgeous Rock Formation

By TheExplorerFamily |

The start of this trail is located in a residential area, and the street is the “Back O’ Beyond” Road – right off Route 179. Our GPS took us to the wrong location a few blocks down from that, and some nice neighbors guided us to the correct place. Apparently, that happens to a lot of people, so now there is even a funny sign about the error (see my photo).

When we arrived at the parking lot in the afternoon, there were quite a few spaces available – which indicated that this particular trail was not as popular as the several others around. A group of people getting ready to go up warned us to take it slow because this hike can get a little difficult in some spots. So, given the time that we had at our disposal, we opted not to go, and spent time in the downtown area instead.

We did pause, however, to take a bunch of photos of the magnificent rock formation. Just Wow…!

A beautiful reward for a challenging hike

By Keeley B |

I don't have much experience with hiking but I knew being in the Arizona heat I needed to have a Camelbak and I figured some hiking boots would be a good idea. Glad I had those things when we hiked the Cathedral Rock trail. There were a few times I wasn't sure I'd be able to continue, but I pushed myself through it and I tell you it was well worth it. A few stops to catch my breath added a little bit of time onto the trip, but it only took about 1:45 to hike to the top. It's much easier on the way back down, even though it doesn't necessarily look like it. I would highly recommend this hike to anyone whose bodies are able.

Fabulous!

By BritishAmerican92 |

Cathedral Rock is a strenuous climb, but the views from where the trail ends are breathtaking. It does pay to go early if you don't want to be climbing with hundreds of others, and it also pays to use the Sedona Shuttle, since parking at the trailhead is limited and fills up quickly! Would highly recommend this hike, but it isn't for the faint of heart!

You can do this! I believe in you!

By Mike X |

TIPS: Arrived at 7am on Sunday and both lots were full already with 3 cars already waiting in line. Forget that noise and just drive to Yavapai trail point parking lot early (before 8am). It's a MUCH longer walk to get to Cathedral Rock trail but the views of the rock formations along the way are the BEST. Yavapai trail links up to Templeton trail (via smaller trails) which links up to the cathedral rock trail.

As for the climb, yes it's a bit challenging. That being said, my wife is a big chicken and she still made it all the way to the top. We saw the elderly, young children and various out of shape people beast mode up that one infamous section so you can do it too. It's more a test of your mind than it is of your body. You can boost your confidence with getting rock climbing shoes and making sure you have both hands free during the climb to brace yourself and crawl.

Once at the top (trail end), go to the right and strangers take turns taking each other's pictures out on the ledge. Then go to the left of the sign and climb up even further to get an even better view.

Good and not-so-good

By Mariah S |

This particular place is beautiful (5 star!) but it is almost impossible to find a parking spot due to limited parking. We ended up having to get there just as the sun was coming up to park. By the time we finished our hike, the lot was overflowing.

Climb to Cathedral Rock

By goldengator42849 |

My son took us here, and it looked quite daunting to see the figures going up the side of the mountain.

We took it slow, and being afraid of heights I was very careful to stay focused.

I’m 74 but with his coaxing I made it to the top between the towering wall on one side and the rocks on the left.

We were just after official sunset, however the afterglow in the clouds was beautiful. A storm was coming (it’s July “monsoon “ season) so we left with the rest of the sunsetters.

It was actually easier for me going down although I stayed focused on the trail and path in front, frequently sliding down on my butt.

I made it, and did get a sense of accomplishment as well as beautiful views.

easy to mild difficulty most of the way. Dangerous trails to the top, more dangerous (we felt) than Cathedral

By Lisa D |

nice hike but you may want to go with the expectation that you will not make it to the top, especially if you are with kids.

Sunrise on Cathedral Rock

By dwater578134 |

We arrived at 6:30am so, plenty of parking. As we reached the first plateau of the rock, the sunrise crested the hill from across the valley, striking Cathedral Rock and casting a golden hue on it's massive, tall, spires. It was awe-inspiring. As we looked down towards the other end of the plateau, we could see a bride and groom, standing on the edge of the plateau, having just completed a wedding ceremony. Can you imagine? Sunrise wedding on Cathedral Rock. Looking towards the other end of the plateau, we spied two colorful hot air balloons rising up in the sky and heading towards us. Magical!

Beautiful

By debbies378 |

We did not hike, didn't have the time but it is visible from the parking lot. It was beautiful, I bet at sunset even more so!

Favorite hike I've done in the past 12 years

By Alexander D |

I've been hiking all over the US and in a few other countries and this was my favorite hike for the experience at the top. It is the most peaceful experience I've had at the top of a trail.

Breathtaking!

By Kyle-Kayla |

Absolutely a must see! It wasn’t very crowded (we were there on a Monday). We tried the easybreezy trail but somehow ended up the same place as the regular trail. Once you get up there the views in front and behind you are amazing. We are not avid hikers but made it half way up. Definitely bring water, sunscreen and comfortable shoes.

Overwhelming beauty

By Cara |

Overwhelming beauty. Did his hike was a little more challenging for us, as we would consider ourselves a novice in hiking however so worth it. We liked the challenge. Coming down was a little hand, foot and bottom but again, a really great day and hike.

climb it

By Scott S |

not a long hike, but has enough scramble to make it fun. View from the top cant be beat. Watched the sunset from the top.

Incredible Geology

By NoMossHere |

impressive -- what's not around Sedona- and some great trails. The neighborhood nestled on the road into the trail head is not too shabby to look at either.

Breathtaking summit

By Alicia C |

An excellent hike! A little strenuous but totally worth it! It's short though - about 2.5 miles out and back, but definitely you put in the work to get up there. The views are next level and you feel super accomplished in the end. Wear hiking shoes since you're definitely doing a bunch of scrambling along the way. But it's breathtaking and that's what you're there for!

Worth the hike

By Travel123 |

Parking is AWFUL. Seriously awful. Unless you are there at 6 am the lot is full and the police are manning the entrance to the neighborhood and will not let anyone through.

With that being said, we enjoy hiking and found another trail to take in from the backside and see cathedral rock. It was beautiful and breathtaking. The last 100 yards are straight up with people going up and coming down. You are at the mercy of finding the right foot hole and coming down you basically have to crawl on your bottom. My husband made it the last 100 yards but I am 6 months pregnant and got too scared about the coming down process as someone fell while we were there.

Would definitely do it again recommend finding alternate routes and not going in via back o beyond road. Also, if there during the week go on a weekday or get ready to be around a ton of people.

Overhyped

By Nadina P |

It might be because I had done Bell Rock earlier and maybe I needed more protein, but I thought this was overhyped and not really worth the challenge--and it IS a very short but VERY challenging hike. Maybe I would have felt differently if it had been my first site of the day. It's still nice to check the box, but if I go back, I'll check out another trail in this area, maybe head down to the creek.

Also, everyone kept saying the part where you have to climb near the bottom of the trail head was the worse part, but I didn't feel that way at all. Sure, it looks intimidating, but I was far grouchier every step of the way past that. For such a short trail, it really felt like it would never end.

Warning about parking

By Richard |

The hike is great BUT - the parking is very limited and - as I learned the hard way - they not only ticket but they TOW. The worst part is that it is not well marked and I thought I was "OK". I got back from the hike in time to take this photo. The police offer informed me that if you park anywhere on or off the road past the signs that say no parking past this point (the signs are just beyond the entrance to the second set aside parking area) - you will be ticketed and they are towing as many people as possible. I showed top as my car was being driven away.

This is so amazing, so glad we did it!

By liz |

I would break this hike into thirds, walking, scrambling, hiking, in that order, you get to do each third both on the ascent and the descent.

When you get to the scrambling section its super important to have hiking boots with good treads. You need the grip on some of the near vertical rocks. There are several foot and hand holds, especially in the crack portion where you’re climbing nearly vertically, less of them on the rocks where the good tread is needed.

We saw many people ill prepared for this hike, even though the distance is short, it’s the elevation and the angle of the elevation that is challenging. Pls bring enough water for each person, and hats. Wear proper clothing.

Follow the rock cairns wrapped in wire and the white spray paint for the trail through the scrambling sections.

Once you reach “end of trail,” head left until the rock wall, and down about 5-7 feet, before scrambling up another 20 feet. HERE is where the views are amazing!! Thank you to the locals who showed up how to go this way, without watching them go and then not return we wouldn’t have known it was possible to continue on this new route back to the trail. The scramble down this portion is more steep than the trail up and there are some crevasses that you could definitely get stuck in. The views though, were better than what was at the end of the trail.

This trail back to the main trail isn’t as clear, after your initial scramble down just head slightly down and left back to the main trail.

We slid on our butts down some of the scrambling spots on the way down, the ones where the rocks are nearly vertical with no hand or foot holds. One teen ripped her pants, the rest of us faired fine.

We met several people along the way back who couldn’t continue and their party went on without them, they either couldn’t scramble up, or weren’t dressed properly, etc. We told them to seek shade while they waited as it was getting busier and they’d be waiting a little while for their parties to return.

Views are Breathtaking

By Devin F |

The views on the hike up to Cathedral rock were breathtaking. If someone is in Sedona I would recommend carving out a couple hours to hike around this. The scenery is absolutely amazing.

Made it to the top!!

By Bryan W |

Had to ride the free shuttle to the trail head. The park and ride lot was packed and had to wait to park till a shuttle came back. The hike was great, views awsome. Wear good hiking boot!! It is a difficult scramble but worth it.
Just a heads up they are doing construction on the trails Wed - Sat now through sometime in April 2024. Can't go to the top wed - sat. Can go to the top on Sun - Tue only.

1 of top 2 favorite hikes in Sedona!!

By ctaylor0159 |

Solo hiked Cathedral Rock. Arrived on a Thursday around 2pm and there was parking available. Had a Red Rock annual passed that worked for parking. From the parking lot, the hike starts consistently steep and gets a little steeper as you go. There are definitely a few parts where you are climbing on all fours (up and down) but it is totally worth it. I didn't feel 100% comfy by myself at a few spots so I waited and climbed with some folks who were hiking behind me. Did that a couple times at the two or three more hairy spots. Wasn't crowded but I was happy not to be alone either. Views are amazing, highly worth it. Many people didn't go to the top but stopped along the way which is a nice option for those that can't finish. Still nice views for those people too.

When driving there, don't let GPS lead you astray!! Put in the address, don't just search by the name or you'll end up in a neighborhood like I did! (and a lot of other people too)

WOW, this was Hard

By Mary C |

Cathedral Rock is, at least for me, a very hard climb, but darn, it is worth it. This is a short, steep climb into the saddle points of Cathedral Rock. The towering side rocks keep the saddle points shaded and breezy, but the lower portion of the trail is bare red rock with total sun exposure. I would not suggest this in the heat of the summer. If you decide to do it, be with others and carry water.

It is not a long climb, but it is not an easy one.

It is so stunning. It is in beautiful Sedona.

You will need to be able to use your hands to climb up some of these rocks. This is not for someone wheel chair bound, sadly.

Once you make it to the top, you'll see the "End of Trail" sign. It is s stunning view.

You must have proper shoes or you could get hurt. My not so great hiking boots did the trick, but next time I am going to R.E.I. to get the best. My ankles are worth it.

Parking is a bear. I suggest the shuttle.

if you are way out of shape just walk a bit and enjoy. Believe me, I have been there, done that. To get to the top you really are at times almost on all fours. Wear gloves. And don't forget you have to get back down. If for any reason you are having a hard time, ask for help, there are other hikers and everyone is super nice. Carry your cell.

You will love it.

Best View in Sedona

By travelsizejenn |

Incredible view! My favorite climb in Sedona. But definitely the most challenging one also. Some sections are vertical and you need to climb a bit.

Great family hike

By laurie3499 |

My family loved this hike—clearly marked trail with beautiful scenery. My kids (6, 8, and 10) easily kept up. There is very limited parking, so plan accordingly.

The Most Iconic Rock Formation in Sedona. A Photographer's Dream, it's ideal for Sunsets.

By MaryEllenM27 |

You can so easily spend the afternoon through sunset at Red Rock Crossing/Crescent Moon Ranch. Begin with a picnic and then take a stroll along Oak Creek at least as far as Buddha Beach. That is where families and children build hundreds of rock cairns.

At the end of the day meander back to the creekside behind the first restroom where you first entered the park gate. Down there is the classic view with Oak Creek in the foreground. Watch the afternoon morph into Sunset and enjoy. You should plan at least an hour before the actual sunset hour to watch the changing light on Cathedral Rock and the Creek.

Your photos turn out great because the setting sun will be behind you lighting up the area softly. Soft light at that angle accentuates the colors your camera will pick up.

*Sunrise there is NOT all that great for photography because you and your camera lens will be facing right into the sun.

Great hike

By akpicc |

Great hike with friends. I'm not much of a hiker, but I really enjoyed this hike. It was very grounding.

Hiking adventure

By Clarissa T |

Great hiking adventure moderate difficulty. Parking lot is small and a very popular trail, so quickly gets full. We had to park at a church about 1/2 mile from start of trail and parking area. Definitely worth the time and experience to do this hike. The views were spectacular. About 1hr 30 min round trip starting from church Parking lot.

Beautiful place

By Carolina G |

It was really hot but if you go early in the morning, 7 am, it's great. The trail is perfectly marked.

Scramble up those rocks!

By Karekey |

Spectacular! Short but steep trail which requires some scrambling so be aware of your limitations. Parking was at a premium and we waited 15 minutes for a spot. I am always surprised at people who have no idea what they are in for! Saw a lady in high heels carrying her purse! And another elderly lady who said “ i thought this was easy trail!” Needles to say both turned around. Hike as far up as you can and still enjoy the views and the adventure. At the top take the photos then continue to the left of then” End of the trail” sign around the corner and more scrambling for different views! Be respectful and quiet of others who may be meditating at this sacred vortex site. I sat quietly and felt my fingers tips all start to tingle! As with all Sedona hikes take plenty of water and arrive early. After I finished my hike a lady at the bottom gave me a bouquet of flowers! I passed them on to other ladies on my next hike.

Cathedral Rock

Cathedral Rock with Serene and beautiful. The energy was palpable. Take the time to meditate and be a quiet piece. Majestic.

Easy hike if you don't go to the top

Amazing views!!! We surely be back to o enjoy such a majestic places. Our trip to Sedona has been one of our favorites. There’s not a single place we dislike

Is it a vortex? Who knows. But it's awe-inspiring

By Lydia O |

We walked out from Bell Rock parking lot down the creek to connect with Templeton and then on to Cathedral and beyond. We're experienced hikers and, unfortunately, when we were there (March 31, 2023) Cathedral was crawling with tons of people, many of whom seemed to be putting themselves and others at risk. We took a pass on summiting, and admired the beauty from the base, as well as all along Templeton and back on Easy Breezy. Check out AllTrails for more technical info. This isn't for inexperienced hikers or folks not in good shape.

Moderate hike with great views

By Papadoc529 |

The parking area requires a fee or a national park pass. Once parked, you are close to the trail head. There are some forks in the trail but the trail is well marked. Hikers should pay attention to the signage. The trail is not difficult except near the summit, it steepens. Trekking poles are recommended as you near the summit.

Love this climb

By Greg S |

Absolute must do, but the climb is not for the faint of heart. Although rated at moderate, I think it’s at the upper end of that designation. The views are amazing— you’ll feel great when you reach the top. It takes just under an hour to get to the top, and about 30 minutes for the return trip when trekking at an average pace, stopping along the way.

Could not go, no parking, no access

By darrell r |

I wanted to go to Cathedral Rock but we couldn't go. No parking, no public transportation provided from Oak Creek or Sedona to get there without walking a long distance.

No Words

By DontStopExploring |

There are no words that describe this hike perfectly. It was a beautiful morning and we were able to find a spot right away at 8:20. This was a weekday so very few people. This is a mentally challenging hike. Physically it’s not too bad. More people on trail coming down and beautiful at the top.

The view is stunning

By tucson2403 |

The best views are at Red Rock State park, but get there early because it is very popular. A short walk up the creek will take you to the Vortex and the classic photo op with the reflection of the rocks in the creek.

Fun climb

By timlockk |

This is a great, moderate hike. It gets the blood pumping, challenges you in spots, and offers a fantastic reward at the end. We waited about 20 minutes for a spot to open up in the parking lot (around 12pm on a weekday). Took us about 45 minutes up, and 30 down. You can't go wrong here. It's a lot of fun.

Sedona Is Majestic {Climb Cathedral Rock}

Challenging hike, amazing views

By Laura |

This only took us about an hour round trip and we took our time at the top taking pics. This one involved some real climbing, like using hands and kind of crawling at several parts. I enjoyed it and it was challenging but never to scary. Even if you don’t want to climb, it is worth going to the base just for the views. The trail is marked with white paint and rock markers. It only cost $5 to park. Probably my favorite hike of our trip.

The Cathedral Rock

By minimize940314 |

The classic cathedral rock. There are some rock formations that look alike this rock, but I think this particular one in Sedona stands out due to the vibrant red color. I only got to see during afternoon, but I cannot imagine how beautiful this rock would have been if I had seen it during sunset or sunrise.

Worth the Hike

By Tim and Tara B |

The hike to Cathedral rock was fun and challenging. You must use the shuttle service to get there. The shuttle was free.

Fun and challenging rock scramble to beautiful views

By KBHobby |

Cathedral Rock trail is a fun and somewhat challenging climb up a red rock formation in Sedona. The view from the top is amazing and worth the trip. It is not a very long trial, so you can climb up and back in less than 2 hours. A lot of the trail is a very doable rock scramble, but there is one section that is a bit hairy. You essentially have to go up through a crack/crevasse and really need to watch your footing. It is easy to be a little scared, but you can get through it. Just wear shoes with good grip. We also suggest going early in the morning to avoid crowds. If you go in the summer, this is going to be a super hot place, there is no shade and you are on rock the entire time. Bring water. And by the way, coming down is a lot easier than going up.

Few days

Wow! What an incredible hike! This was one of the shorter hikes, but more strenuous. It does require to sometimes be on all fours, but anyone is capable. Once you hit the top, the views will take your breath away! We stayed for sunset and walked down after dark. I highly recommend this, especially on a night with a full moon! Bring a snack, pack a water for sure and don't forget your camera! Best hike I've ever done!

Beautiful & Better With Preparation

By laurasK1091GF |

Beautiful location; Trail signs are a bit confusing and not marked well. Be prepared to have enough water; sunscreen or hat when making the trek. A smart phone wouldn't hurt either. Moderate hiking level.

Best sunset hike ever

By UNCDAVE |

I am 65 and it was a challenging hike but it was truly a great experience and the sunset was unbelievable. I would highly recommend it.

Castle rock is so pretty

Beautiful red rocks in the area. View it from different angles and time of day changes it. Wonderful destination for a relaxing trip with awesome scenery.

Sunrise on Cathedral - avoiding shuttle on weekends

By namabeer |

This is my third time to hike Cathedral. Still my top or near top hike in Sedona. Quick, and great bang for the time and effort you put in. I did discover the hangover trail this time and it sort of topped Cathedral. But if you have limited time Cathedral is the one to do. Sedona has become so busy now that road closures and shuttle buses have been introduced. You cannot enter the back & beyond road to the TH from Thur to Sunday now in the offseason. The shuttle is not far and goes quite frequently (every 15 min). Ok so the trick if you want to see the sunset and avoid the road closure is to got before shuttle starts so 7am. I got there at 6am (bit early) in the dark and was able to park in trailhead but had to wait til like 6:45 am when it started getting a bit light to catch the 7:16am sunrise.

We were the only dummies there but it was worth it. As we went the week after thanksgiving in Dec - it was strange and we had Cathedral Rock all to ourselves for 2 hrs. Lucked out.

Not too difficult hike if you are used to slick rock and not afraid to use all 4 s sometime and on your butt. It's a short hike like 3km or 1.5 mile. You pass a dried up river bed then up to 2 open mesas which give great view. You get the narrow scrabble which can get bottledneck at busy time. Then you are near the top. Note lots of juniper trees along the way. When you get to the saddle it says end of trail but that's not the end. 2 more options. Go to the extreme right for your instagram ledge shot or go to the left and climb up to the VOREX between 2 peaks.

In total depending on how much you spend sitting and enjoying the view, it can take from 2 hr to 3hr in total.

Hope this helps your planning but do go early or late as this is the most popular, iconic hikes in Sedona.

Other hike i did this time included

Hang over trail - highly recomm if you got like 5hrs or so
Boynton Canyon to Subways
Birthing Cave
Broken Arrow to High on Hogs/hogs wash
Fay Canyon Arch
Tea Pot
Bell rock climb for sunset
Soldiers Pass

In prior visits i did

Devils Bridge (which i heard is a nightmare just to get photo now)
Broken Arrow to Submarine rock to Chicken pt
Doe Mountain
Soldiers pass
Cathedral
Boynton Vista
Airport mesa
Slide rock state park

etc...

A Must-Do Hike for Couples in Sedona

By Kevin |

My wife and I recently spent several days in Sedona, and hiking Cathedral Rock was easily one of the highlights of our trip. This iconic landmark is a must-see for any visitor to the area, and it's especially romantic for couples seeking adventure and breathtaking views.

The Hike:

The Cathedral Rock trail is relatively short (just 1.2 miles roundtrip), but don't let that fool you – it's a steep and challenging climb! The trail gains about 740 feet in elevation, and there are some sections that require scrambling over rocks. However, the effort is absolutely worth it. The views from the top are simply stunning, with panoramic vistas of the red rock formations, canyons, and verdant valleys.

Tips for Couples:

Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon: This will help you avoid the crowds and the midday heat.
Pack plenty of water: Staying hydrated is crucial, especially in the desert climate.
Wear sturdy hiking shoes: The trail can be rocky and uneven.
Take your time and enjoy the journey: Don't rush the climb. Stop to admire the views and take photos along the way.
Share the experience: Help each other out on the challenging sections of the trail, and celebrate your accomplishment together at the top.

Our Experience:

My wife and I hiked Cathedral Rock early one morning, and we were rewarded with incredible views and a sense of accomplishment. We took our time on the climb, stopping to admire the scenery and take photos. At the top, we found a quiet spot to enjoy the panoramic vista and soak in the beauty of Sedona. It was a truly magical experience that we'll never forget.

Final Thoughts:

If you're looking for a challenging but rewarding hike with stunning views, Cathedral Rock is the perfect choice. It's a great activity for couples who want to connect with nature and create lasting memories. Just remember to go early, be prepared, and most importantly, enjoy the journey together!

Beautiful place

By Stefan S |

Beautiful rock, feasible with kids. It's sad that all the esoteric people interpret stuff, when it's just a beautiful landscape created by God.

Great Hike

By Kim S |

Park at the Baldwin Trailhead for this hike and you get a beautiful 2ish mile hike to the first plateau that is WAY easier than basically hiking straight up from the main Cathedral parking lot - which fills fast (by 7am) and they WILL tow your car if you park on the side of the road, so Baldwin trailhead is the way to go. We got there shortly after 7 and there were plenty of parking spaces. By the time we were done around lunchtime - Baldwin was full too. $15 dollars for parking that is good for a week at all of the trailheads or take your America the Beautiful Park pass and hang it in your window.

The Hike : from the Baldwin parking area take the Templeton Trail to Cathedral. Then you can either climb up higher on Cathedral - lots of vertical scrambling and gets crowded or you can continue on Templeton around Cathedral and hike up one of the dry riverbeds (not a marked trail) and look down on the people on Cathedral. When we were done at Cathedral, we went back the same way and added on the Baldwin Loop with was an additional 2 miles which was also an easy hike. Definitely go early and take plenty of water, it does get hot by mid-day. Also hiking shoes or sneakers are best, I wouldn't recommend flip flops or crocs (even though we saw a lot of them).

Amazing view

By degrawm |

By far a breath taking view. We hiked less than a mile to get to a good photo spot to take pictures. The fall foliage just increased the viewing pleasure making the pictures even more majestic. Wish I spent more time here.

Wow! Wow! Wow!

By kbkhkh |

Wow! Wow! When you arrive, unless you are an avid hiker, the hike will seem daunting. Please take one step and a time. You can do it. We stopped, took photos, and eventually made it. The shuttle driver said that it is a half hour each way - we’ll it took us an hour each way. But that’s ok! Do it! It’s a must see.

nice hikes

By Sallys44 |

There are seveeral hikes to select from. We did the one trail that was about a mile and half loop and our grand kids did the steeper more difficult one to the top. All enjoyed the hike. My opinion of the easier one (Baldwin I think) was a little more difficult than I thought the rating suggested.

Worth the hike.

By OdettaDangerous |

Breathtaking views along the way. Definitely wear appropriate hiking shoes with tread. Gloves also helpful. A bit of scrambling to the top.

Stunning!!!

By Tannet T |

Absolutely breathtaking!!! Seeing in person is incredible more beautiful than in the pictures. If you visit Sedona don't skip visiting any of the beautiful scenarios.

Photo op #...well it's all photo ops in Sedona.

By Holly W |

There are no bad views. The nature and majesty of Sedona is beyond words. You can see much of it by car and get up close and personal with hikes.

A beautiful spiritual experience

By Connie T |

This was a beautifully situated chapel set in the rocks with awesome views from all directions. Guests are invited to sit and meditate in the chapel. The whole thing was an inspiring work of art.

Majestic peace!

By DocMary1 |

Sedona is best enjoyed in a quiet meditative state. Watching the sunrise or sunset, hiking the trails near cathedral rock or just soaking in the sun/nature/quiet. You don’t need to climb. Just get near and let the majesty and good energy wash over you.

32 year anniversary hike

By Sean A. |

My wife and I decided to do this hike while in Sedona on our 32 anniversary. It was challenging in couple sections, you did have to crawl up a crevice and really test your climbing skills. We took our time and were able to safely navigate the terrain and climb. We were able to reach the summit and take in the awesome views on both sides of the valley. Worth the hike.

Gorgeous

By DeannaMarieBardo |

What a view. A must. It is a great drive and you visit other scenic spots near on your way. This was amazing.

Face your fears for the view!

By Maddie M |

My family and I (50s and 20s) hiked this on our trip to Sedona and it was totally worth it! The hike itself is a bit challenging. We are not very experienced as we are from Chicago, but those who are locals here admit is it a more challenging hike. It is only about 2 ish miles and does not take long however you are pulling yourself up on rocks and having to scoot down. There were some that brought new borns, kids, and dogs which I would not recommend. There is a vortex further past the top which we did not go to however would recommend going or going to some others that are less challenging like Airport Mesa Vortex!

One thing is the parking is very limited and cars are just waiting in a line for people to leave. We however parked at Little Horse Trail and it was less than a mile away. We walked down a little trail to the roundabout and walked down the road that lead us to the parking lot where cars were still waiting. We hiked Cathedral and then went to the Eazy Breezy Trail which took us on a few other short trails right back to our car at Little Horse! This entire hike from the parking lot to top of Cathedral and back to our car took about 3ish hours. I would definitely purchase the red rock pass that is $15 dollars for 7 days and allows parking at any of the sights.

Cathedral Rock Hike

By CareyRit |

Cathedral Rock was one of our top hikes in Sedona. Go early. We took the 8:00 am shuttle on a Thursday. It was 80 degrees and manageable in terms of heat. The trail is fairly well marked. There is one section which I would call the "Crux" but it is very doable. (Use your feet in the crack). We wore Hoka sneakers with good tread. Make sure you have a sun hat and water (hands free). I used my hands in a few places going up. Beautiful views from the the top. When the sign says you are at the end, you can actually continue up to the left and around the corner further up for another amazing view. This is a doable hike for a kid if they are sure footed and an experienced hiker. Have fun. Be safe.

Put it on the to do list for sure!

By Loretta E |

This was an awesome hike, one off our highlights of our trip! Yes parking is a problem, so not sure how to get around that. We were fortunate as two of the six of us did not want to hike so they dropped us off and picked us up. If you are visiting and considering doing the hike I would say yes! The hike can be strenuous if you aren’t used to the lower oxygen levels (we are from SC) but once your lungs adjust your fine. I loved it! It had some easy parts, some steep parts and some rock scrambles. I thought everyone was really nice and helpful on the trail. I think we might have been lucky with crowds too because I didn’t feel overwhelmed with people. At the top, it is just beautiful! Amazing views! There is a little ledge that you can walk out and get a photo, Not recommended if scared of heights.

Must do in Sedona

By Alex N |

Absolute must do in Sedona. It was a great hike and the views are spectacular. Not extremely difficult. A healthy individual would have no problem.

Beautiful

By Robert P |

Unfortunately having limited mobility, hiking was not an option. We took offroad, but still couldn't experience the beauty.
My friend did hike. Her reply "AMAZING ".

Hike

By Sebrina N |

Cathedral rock trail is one of the best hikes! Also recommend going to red rock crossing at sunset to view cathedral rock. It is the best time to view it given how the sunlight hits the rock.

Glorious

By Gil S |

Just a drive around the Red Rock loop is an eyeful, but I bet hiking in the park is a real treat. Weather is of course a factor.

Scrambling and stunning views

By Lori S |

I did not realize this trail went all the way to the top (the saddle between the spires.) we had a fantastic time scrambling and hiking and climbing all the way up. This is a *hugely popular* trail so be patient waiting for a parking spot and for your turn up the narrowest climbs. If you get intimidated during the climb, You can cease your ascent at any time and just enjoy the view. But, there are probably just 2 really frightening spots to hoist yourself up. The map says .7 miles to the top but my pedometer said it was more like 2.6 round trip. Took us about 2:20. Saw lots of hikers of all ages - babies, dogs, seniors. Not only are the views of Cathedral Rock itself amazing during your climb, but so are the views across the valley to Courthouse, Twin Buttes, Chicken Point, and the rim beyond Sedona. Don’t miss this hike!!

Challenging and Amazing

By jamesaI3832SQ |

Cathedral Rock propwrly earned its reputation. One needs to get mentally prepared for this hike. Several sections of this hike are challenging and requires hands to be placed on rocks to aid progress. The challenges in the hike make it all the more worthwhile. The proper gear is necessary, including good shoes. The shuttles work very well. They appear to have the flow down well. The drivers are very helpful and even offer free water. Water is definitely needed during the hike.

you must do this hike/climb!!

By sharonn874 |

do not be intimidated by this hike/climb - it is amazing and the views are beautiful - it was our favorite hike but don't get freaked out by the climbing part - it is so worth it!

Great Vortex Energy

By Valerie M |

This is a special place to visit and meditate. However, if you can’t hike up onto the rocks, you can only stand to see it. There are no sitting areas or special viewing points. Since I was unable to hike, I was limited in my experience.

The Best Hike!!! A must do.

By Emily S |

This was our favorite hike in Sedona. It’s steep but manageable. Hiking boots are key because you need the grip on the rocks due to the incline. The view from the top is amazing. Go to the right at the top and take photos on the ledge - so beautiful. Parking can be tough so go at an off-peak time. We first tried around 3:30pm on Friday, not knowing it’s a big sunset hike. There was no parking anywhere. We went back around 11am on Saturday and only had to wait a few minutes to find a spot. There are two small lots and street parking.

WOW- what a climb and view!

By Kimberly N |

I highly recommend that you go for the sunset. Bring your water, and first aid kit in case you run into a cactus and don't forget headlamp and use your "All trails" app to navigate. Enjoy

Finally made it!!

By Tami C |

Hiked the rock a couple years ago from the front and was overwhelmed at the beauty. This visit, we hiked the trail from Back O Beyond Rd along the creek and IT WAS STUNNING!
The kids had a blast along the trail and were amazed at the change of scenery from the creek to the rock.
And this time....we made it to the top! The views are unmatchable.

An excellent climb

By Nan L |

The climb wasn’t as hard as I thought, but it is challenging and fun. It took us 1.5 hrs up and down, including picture time and exploring the extra climbing to the left once you reached the trail end. We arrived at 1:30pm and waited about 15 min at the parking lot before there’s a spot became available. Just be patient and there are always people coming back down at any time. The view on the top is spectacular. You may get warm climbing up. I’d recommend this one over Bell Rock.

Between top in the USA

By mark |

2 times I go, it's certainly not cheap, but I recommend replacing Vegas with this destination, very interesting trials

Challenging but worth it!

By Julie K |

This hike is not for the faint of heart. There is a section in the middle that is a steep incline up a crack in the rock, and there is quite a lot of elevation gain toward the end, but if you can handle that, I highly recommend! The views at the middle and the top are incredible. Also, if you want to avoid the shuttle and don't mind adding about 3 miles roundtrip to your hike, consider starting at the Baldwin Trailhead and take the Templeton Trail, which eventually merges with Cathedral Rock Trail.

Perfect trail

By Tita Elvie |

Amazing hike and views. Highly recommend this trail and hike. We did a loop around and went up Cathedral Rock in the middle of it. The loop was runnable and beautiful.

Highly recommend.

Awesome hike, great views!

By NieceyLyn |

Loved the climbing and challenge of reaching the saddle! Beware there is some vertical climbing. You should be pretty fit and WEARING PROPER HIKING SHOES. Not appropriate for “littles”.

Sunset

By W4MPS |

Park in the Crescent Moon Picnic Area, walk down to Oak Creek and get ready for the best sunset ever. Get there 1 hour before sunset.

Great way to start the day,

By jfoxworthy |

Got to the parking lot at 530 and was able to grab a spot...The lot was half full, The hike up was a lot of fun challenging in some spots but worth all the effort. We were able to get to the top in time to watch an amazing sunrise.

Must do, good fun for family, challenging but fun

By Drdomore |

5 out of 5. Based on online reviews, this felt daunting. Make sure you have good shoes, plenty of water, comfortable hiking clothing, sunscreen and a camera (I used my iPhone). Gorgeous views. When you get to the top, keep going on the left side. There is another bit to hike for even better views.

Pro tip: There is no parking allowed at site. You can take an Uber, which will drop you off at trailhead. Private cars are not allowed but Uber and shuttles are allowed. Wish I had known this before

Very impressive

By John S |

We drove by Cathedral Rock on as many sides as possible, entranced by its beauty. If we hiked, we would have gone closer. This is worth seeing.

Strikingly Beautiful

By bpjj |

This is one of the memorable red rocks of Sedona that happens to have a name. Be sure to take some pix of this one, as well as nearby Bell Rock and Courthouse Rock.

1 hour hike 7/10 for effort... and sunset is totally worth it

By Shreyansh182 |

We went in mid NOV evening. Mildly cold and a bit windy on some parts. Totally worth it so definitely go. Here are the tips:
1. Unless you are a serious hiker, plan for an hour to get to top.
2. Parking is hard. Reach well in advance.
3. Don’t be an a&&hole blocking everyone else view for your own Instagram.
4. Carry water and a light jacket at least.
5. Real hiking shoes highly recommended for your own safety and others.

Worth the climb!

By aemarrin |

Scary at first if you are not a fan of heights. The view is so worth it. Wear proper hiking shoes and bring plenty of water. Its a short hike, but does involve quite an incline and a bit of climbing.

Felt the vortex!

By Amber M |

We did a hike just before the sunset rush. It was quiet except for the wind rustling and whistling and we truly felt that vortex energy. It was an incredible experience.

We love it

By Alfredo C |

Try to go . Take care because it is not an easy ride. Nice views. But you need to be in good shape to climb to the top

A beautiful butte!

By TravelerTrecker |

Cathedral rock is one of the 4 most important Sedona rocks to visit (The others are Bell Rock, Snoopy, and the Courthouse). The Cathedral rock is 2 miles from Sedona's downtown. There is a small parking lot at the base. There is limited parking space and the parking area closes when is full. If this happens, you just have to wait and drive around; the parking spaces become available very often. You have to pay 5 dollars for parking although there are some days that parking is free. It is not clear to me which days are these and apparently this is determined by local authorities.

To climb the Cathedral is somewhat challenging. We did not fully climb the Cathedral butte as we found it somewhat risky. Regardless, the views are beautiful and there are several easy trails around the base that are very quiet and put you in contact with nature,

You may spend the whole morning or the whole afternoon at this site.

Fantastic view

By Kausar786 |

Sedona is full of surprises. Cathedral rock is one of them. Nature marvellously carved the shape of the sandstone millions of years ago, first by water then by winds. You need to climb thrus stairs to get the best view. Again better in cooler weather

Good views

By Peter B |

Wonderful rock formation around Sedona, the rocks appear to change colour as the day goes on, on of the 'must see' places in Sedona

Power Spot Up on All Fours

By a.nishi |

Cathedral Rock, one of the four Vortex and power spots in Sedona. I went there at about 8:30 in the morning and passed someone who had already come down. It was February and the temperature was low, but it was quite hot up there so be careful how you dress. There are also some places where you have to get on all fours, and if you're not sure about your physical fitness, you may be able to turn around halfway. The view from the open rock on the way is also wonderful. But once you get to the top, you'll be very satisfied with the sense of achievement and the view. Going down isn't so scary if you're going down with your butt on.

Gorgeous views!

By DancerGirl47 |

This was one of my favorite hikes from our trip to Sedona! It’s short but not easy- requires quite a bit of using your hands and sliding as it gets steeper at the top. I would suggest hiking shoes. I did it in running shoes and took my time. Have fun

Cathedral Rock is special

By ramblinggirl67 |

This is a challenging, strategic hike for the beginner/average hiker, which I am. I've been doing easy to moderate hikes, but this was a whole different beast. It was worth it! I went alone as a solo female and there were some times I thought I was going to have to stop because I just didn't know how to do certain sections, but I always ended up figuring it out. Getting to the top was totally amazing and gave me a natural high that lasted for days. Cathedral Rock will always have a special place in my heart. I went early in the morning and did my hike as the sun started to rise, which helped beat the heat and also provided gorgeous lighting as the sun hit the rock formations. Highly recommend giving this hike a shot.

Zoo

By David J |

Parking is a total pain, some folks walking nearly a mile to get to the trailhead, we got lucky. But the place was a total zoo, we should have got there earlier but people wearing flop flops, so many groups all taking pictures blocking trail. We didn't go to the top but turned right along some wonderful trails dropping down into the valley along river, now that was fun

Every step is a postcard

By Holly W |

Walk, hike, stroll....just enjoy the scenery. Whether you are an avid outdoorist or just enjoy beautiful scenery at a slow pace, the trails of Sedona are always spectacular. No equipment required but always bring water.

Beautiful but not easy

By shiftchick |

We had read that the climb was for families and was easy. It is not. After a short, easy, climbing trail, you need to sheer up the rock with hand/ foot holds. Not for the easy hiker. Views were great, but difficult climb

Must climb if you can

By Dana K |

This is a great hike to feel like an accomplished hiker.
It’s tough, you having climbing with your hands, and some time need to use your bum.
Not for the faint at heart with heights, not for anyone with balance issues.
The views are stupendous. Take your time and enjoy each level you climb.
Hope that helps. Only go with dry weather, the rocks are slippery when damp.

Worth the long, steep hike

By Cindy P |

We aren’t climbers but this was about a 60-minute hike up to the top. Some spots were difficult for us, but we’re glad we persevered. A favorite hike for sure.

Absolutely amazing and breathtaking

By Chris W |

Literally stole the breath from my body, never felt more alive - best hike I've ever done in my life. I need to find another one in the future. I don't know if any would compare.

Gorgeous Views after a challenging bit of a rock climb

By KimCarey |

We picked this hike because of how short it was. It was amazing...bit of a cardio workout going up, since it was mainly all uphill. The rock scramble was more than I imagined, but made me feel empowered after getting through that part! A friend of ours was scared of heights and he made it to the top. We were all so proud of him. I do wish we would have had someone take a pic of us in the ledge from the area you first come up in. That would have looked more amazing.

Busy place! Great views

By Maren R |

We had to almost fight people for a parking spot here it's crazy. The entire way up is a hard climb but spectacular. The valley is so pretty every direction. We came here a little later in the day and it was crazy busy. Lots of waiting because of narrow paths and many different skill levels trying to get up and down. As with many other challenging hikes you should know your limits and don't push it.

Easy to challenging hiking

By intinerant |

Close to Sedona, easy to challenging hiking on well marked trails, up an amazing red rock! Only challenge is very limited parking...

Amazing viws

By limabean |

It is rated a medium hike but I would rate it probably closer to a strenuous even though short. Tremendous views from the top. Not for beginners.

Just amazing!!!

By Quantummottle |

This is a Spectacular hike with amazing views. It is certainly not for the weak hearted. Also you need to be pretty fit to climb up to reasonable locations. Some places are pretty steep. Strongly recommend

great hiking but get there early

By John D |

the view was amazing but if you don't get to the attractions early such as 7am, parking is limited or you end up parking down the road a mile or two. there is also an option to take the shuttle bus.

Go, but never on a weekend

By luvt0teach |

Went to Sedona to see the fantastic geology. That part was great, but do not, I repeat DO NOT go on a weekend. We could not hike to Cathedral Rock or get to Slide Rock because parking was closed off. Traffic through Sedona took forever due to the continual backup of stop and go traffic. It was worse than driving through New York.

Majestic Sandstone At 1514 Metres

By Oldjack |

Cathedral Rock is one of the many beautiful sandstone formations in Sedona. Located about 1.6 KM west of Route 179 it can be seen from various locations. One of many beautiful vistas to see and visit when in Sedona. Been there many times and never disappointed. It reaches 1,514 metres in height.

Sedona

By Suzanne S |

The mountains in Sedona are always beautiful but other aspects are not. We got there from the Sedona exit off 17 and then got stuck on 179 for an hour and forty minutes trying to get to 89. Note that during peak seasons this is the norm ( and the reverse going to 179 from 89. We did the birthing cave, Rachel’s Knoll day one. We hiked around Cathedral and up the mountain on Tuesday. We also did the Big Park Loop around Courthouse to Bell Rock in the afternoon. Our last day we did Soldiers Pass to the pools the cave, and around Brins Mesa -we climbed the mesa- and around to the parking lot. Our last hike that evening was Boyton Canyon.

Unreal and stunning

By Alina M |

Quite likely one of the most profound experiences, once you realize and accept what you’re up to. For me, I thought I’m coming to a beautiful hike along the red rocks of Sedona. It turned into a quest of challenge, perseverance, and conquering of the ego - all the things I did not expect of this experience. The hike is challenging at times, you must make a connection with the mountain to conquer it. The sunset at the top is the most rewarding and beautiful things I have ever seen.

Breathtaking!

By Maria 🪷 |

Cathedral Rock is a must-see for everyone who visits Sedona! I actually gasped when I got my first full view of it. Highly recommend to anyone looking to experience awe in Sedona!

Adrenaline Rush Hike

By Jen N |

Wow, this hike turned out to be quite challenging even for avid hikers. Beautiful trail with all kinds of red rock formations and old carved trees. The climb started 15 minutes into the hike, fairly intense rock scramble to the top! Hiking shoes with good traction recommended. We saw many dogs on the trail and hikers of all ages. At the top there is a ledge you can walk out on for awesome pictures. Also a short trail to another viewpoint.

Make it to the top!

By mia a |

What can I tell you that others haven't? All I can say is this is a must do if you are in Sedona. But beware, this is not an easy hike (if you are older and not in shape ;-) ). Not for the faint of heart and a challenge if you have a fear of heights but oh so worth it to overcome those fears!

Don’t miss this stop on the scenic byway!

By Karen G |

This is one of several red rock formations on the scenic byway. It is just huge and photos certainly don’t do it justice. You have to see it to believe it. Lots of great parking and hiking trails.

Magical!

By vacationauthority |

I put this up there among one of the most beautiful spots on earth. The vortex of energy is abundant and the collective connection of all who travel it can feel this underlying gust of wind which is actually the energetic fields presenting themselves to be spiritually swept up in. There are no words to describe the experience which I think will be different and shaped by each individual's own spiritual journey. LOVE LOVE LOVE

Cathedral ROCKS!!!!!

By Traveler792723 |

We hired Jonathan as a guide from "Red Rock Treks" to help guide us up Catherdral rock. It was a mind blowing experience. We came up the Baldwin trail traversed along the creek and switched back up the side to Cathedral. A must!!!! Do not leave Sedona without this experience.

great view from the top.

By TBBLACKWELL |

a little hard in places, but worth it. we did it as part of the longer HiLine trail. Very hot after noon. A little crowded as the trail is only a mile from a parking lot.

Fantastic!

By RonnyS_12 |

Did the rock at daylight on a Sunday. Was a fun climb to the top, really enjoyed it!
It’s pretty steep and a little slippery from the dust so just be warned.. I’m 61 and had no problem making the climb, but I hike all the time.

Fabulous views

By mpharveyco |

We stopped in on 4/5/21 about 2. We were just in time for the hike because the parking lots were crazy when we got back. We did not go all the way. In fact one of use stayed back to catch up with the Dead on Sirius. Anyway, easy hike to the midpoint and gets harder then as you go. Nice views, and well worth the visit.

Great rock scrambling

By kukiimnzta |

Enjoyed this trail very much! My boys (ages 7 and 9) enjoyed it as well. There is a lot of rock scrambling and some tight spots. Super windy up top, watch your hat/cap!

Great View from Anywhere!

By OhioArubaLovers |

I hiked this area from three different viewing points and every time the views were stunning. A no brainier when in Sedona!

Wear hiking boots!

By Louise M |

The description for Cathedral Rock hiking trail called it medium difficulty. My personal opinion was that this trail was challenging. Not the actual trail, but the portion where you start scrambling up rocks to get to the vista was a little too scary for my 62 year old body. I had good tread on my athletic shoes, but all it would have taken is one mis-step and it could have ruined the rest of my vacation. That being said, the hike is beautiful, and not strenuous so much as possibly dangerous. We got pretty near the top but decided it wasn't worth risking a fall so we took our pictures and came back down. We purchased an all day parking pass and were able to take several hikes that day with minimal difficulty parking. We went around 7am.

Best hike in Sedona!

By superflipilotguy |

Best hike in Sedona! Great, quick hike! If you’re averagely fit, like me, it should take you 45 min or less to get to the top! It’s pretty much strait up, not too many switchbacks. This was my sixth or so time going up; but first with 100°+ temps. Great views of the other side atop! The parking lot is small, so show up early. There is now a kiosk to purchase a red rock pass on property. You used to have to goto the Ranger Station in downtown Sedona to purchase one, often delaying your hike while the temperatures rise - not anymore!

Some steep scrambles

By vacationgrl2010 |

We started started this hike around 7am in order to beat the July heat. Bring water and a backpack as you will need your hands for some of the scrambles along the way. Great hike with fantastic views! Worth the climb

Beautiful but a little hard

By deadchef |

Very steep. A little scary for anyone who is scared of heights. Beautiful views. Sandstone is grippy with good hiking boots.

Beautiful sight without hiking

By DLP |

Scared of heights so no way I would do this hike. I understand the views are amazing, but the view of cathedral rock in general is amazing. You do not need to do the hike to appreciate Cathedral Rock. Took in the sight of cathedral rock from different locations and it was always impressive. Swimming at Crescent Moon State Park with Cathedral Rock as the view was incredible.

nice views and hikes

By abmilw |

As with all popular trails, parking is in short supply and trails could be better marked. Need to pay to park. This can be easy trail if you do the walk around, challenging if you want to do hike up. Bell Rock has walk around turns into Cathedral Rock trail. Could be better marked, alltrails and gps helps.

Harder than moderate IMO

By Dilla |

This is listed as a moderate hike but I would scale it a bit harder than that. Wear good hiking shoes/boots and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty/scuffed up. It is steep so if you have knee issues, you may want to wrap/brace/tape up. The views going all the way to the top are stunning. We went at 11am on a Wednesday and had to wait 30-40 minutes for a parking space to open up. It is $5 to park. There is one bathroom at the parking lot. It is very busy.

Most memorable hike in Sedona sections are difficult but can be done

By Brown_Samantha |

We arrived at the parking lot very early in the morning to make sure we get a spot. Several groups took off in the dark with head lamps, must have been hiking to see sunrise. It is located at the end of a residential street Back O Beyond Road, very limited space with dry facilities. We waited and had breakfast in the car, got rewarded with the most colorful sunrise over the horizon. It was beautiful.

The start of the trail is very easy, if you have limited time or cannot hike far, the view to Cathedral Rock is stunning even from the bottom. While the distance is only 0.6 mile each way, it does get very steep with parts that will require all 4s. Several groups stopped at the big steep "platform" section. There is no rule you can't just stop there and turn around.

The most important tip: wear nice and sturdy hiking boots with gripping soles. You will definitely need it going up and coming down. Certain portions if you have short legs or not as strong, you will need to pull yourself up by grabbing rocks, or have someone give you a "pull".

We took our time, stopped to take in the view and take photos. It took us almost an hour to ascend and 1/2 hour to descend. There is a section where you go up single-filed, step foot over foot in this rock crevasse. It felt safe, despite how steep it was. Bring a light backpack so you can have hands free.

Once you get to the "End of Trail" sign, you will see why it is such a popular hike. The view is simply stunning. Some people walked along to the right to go out to the ledge for that "bragging" photo. One of us in the group did, while one with fear of cliffs and ledges did not. :o)

This was our favorite hike in Sedona.

Cathedral Climb

By KLGourley |

My wife and I made it to the end of the Cathedral Rock Trail. While the trail itself isn't really that long, it is a fairly intensive hike because of the steep incline in places. In a couple of sections, it is more of a rock climb than a hike - these few sections can feel a bit intimidating if you have a slight fear of heights. If you mare making this trek in Summer, I strongly suggest you bring plenty of water and take short breaks every time to come to a little bit of shade to prevent dehydration.

Don’t miss this hike!!

By Jessica J |

Go the whole way!! You will be so glad you did!!!
We took our three teenagers and the said it was the best hike they have been on, and we had already done two hikes into the Grand Canyon!!

Great hike/climb

By rrosendahl |

I loved this hike! Great views and the steep climb was quite fun! As to be expected, lots of people. The parking lots were full by 7:20 AM and we got lucky snatching one of the last parking spots, so arrive early.
On the way back down, there is a nice trail off to the side to explore some more and make it down to the river.

Very busy

By Shelly C |

We had to take the shuttle and it took a couple times at the parking lot to find a space. We got there in the afternoon but we’ll worth the trip and the wait. Just wish it was a little easier to do. The views are exceptional.

Number one destination in Sedona

By a h |

No wonder it is the number one tourist destination in Sedona, an amazing track, and great photos at sunset and sun rising.

Beautiful views make this hike totally worth it!!

By Angela N |

My husband and I hiked this trail between 10-Noon. Despite the warm temperatures, we were surprised to see many people traversing it that day. Being from the east and not as familiar with hikes in the west, it was challenging but the trail was clearly marked. We were glad to have sturdy hiking shoes, plenty of water, hats and sun glasses. The hike was done within 2 hours with plenty of time to see the sites. Hiking poles are not needed, but we did need to use hands and feet in some places. Some hikers chose to slide down the rocks on the return hike.

We were caught off guard with the shuttle only running Thursday-Sunday, but found sufficient parking at the trail head. There is a parking fee. Some annual park passes work in place of the fee. Check the website.

Spiritual Wonder

By Eric V |

A must visit if you come to Sedona, especially if you are Catholic. What a great view. Warning-parking is tight, but there is handicap parking at the top of the hill. It is a bit of hike up the hill from most parking, but worth it.

Red Rock views breathtaking

By Cindy W |

5 🌟 Great red rock views from everywhere in Sedona, Az. Great hikes to see up closer. Devil's Bridge best challenging hike.

Extremely difficult

By snpkelley |

My son loved it but it was too much for me. I struggled between a 4 star or 3 star review but I really feel it's not adequately advertised as a pretty intense rock climb. This is not really a hike. I wish I had not taken a back pack. It only took us 1 1/2 hours so a backpack wasn't necessary
Take water and wear good climbing/ hiking boots/ shoes. I took a professional camera too which was too much to carry.

Easy parking and great views

By Becky V |

Easy to get to and great views, try to go near sunset! Had other take our picture and it will be pour Christmas card this year!

Red Rock Crossing

By Jason B |

We took in the view of Cathedral Rock at Red Rock Crossing at Crescent Moon Ranch. It cost $11 to park. Go early. We got there at 8:00 AM, and there were still parking spots. The view of Cathedral Rock is pretty, but there are so many kids and families running around and swimming that it takes away from the beauty. Be prepared to walk through water for your picture. Must-see on our trip, but we didn’t stay very long.

Glorious views

By Kityayma |

Stunning day, beautiful walk, glorious views . Some guides say the walk takes 2 hours but it was more like 3 for us. Not everyone will want to do the last scramble up to the steps that lead to the platform but you still get great views from the base or mid level (the bit before the narrow vertical scramble). But the climb to the top is worth it for the incredible 360 degree views and close ups of those magnificent rocks. One section of the trail passes a pretty river and this section is shaded by tall trees. Most other parts are unshaded. You need shoes with tread. Some rocks are very slippery.
When we there they were doing work on the trail and it's only open Sunday, Monday and Tuesday until April 13.

Dont bother unless you are here by 7am

By lquadros |

When you look at the advertisements of Sedona, you literally see everywhere this rock and the the Bell rock. I mean that is the draw for the tourists i.e. to hike or to at least hike around these natural formations, if not on it. Problem is there is a huge parking problem. People scampering dangerously around with their vehicles, circilng around in desperation. And if you are folks like me who came from a different state just to experience these; it leaves you enraged and cheated.

There is a vast expanse of empty land around the parking lot and nothing in the vicinity, so its not that there is a space issue. It's simply lousy planning.

So, unless you get here by 7.00 am, which if you don't stay in Sedona then its not practical, don't bother coming here. You have been warned.

Mesmerizing

By Cindy J |

Go to Crescent Ranch picnic area before dusk and find the creek for fabulous sunset photo opp. Slippery rocks but breathtaking beauty.

Top 5 life experiences!

By ArloSachs |

The climb had its fun challenges and reaching the top was a source of pride! Most beautiful scenery I've seen!

Beautiful!

By esanch1988 |

We did this with our one year old in the Osprey backpack and was a bit worried at first, but if you take your time it’s fine. So glad we went all the way to the top it has an amazing view.

Steep but stunning

By Jai S |

Our family had a fun hike at Cathedral Rock. Some spots on our hike were really steep, and some were moderate. It took us 50 minutes to go up and 35 minutes to come back. We were also walking pretty slow though. The way down was much easier than the way up. At the top we saw an awesome view of the mountains. There was one section of the trail that was narrow, like a crevice, but tucked between rocks so you couldn’t fall. We started the hike at 5:15and ended at 6:40. Even though the sunset was at 6:15 we still had enough daylight to finish our hike. We had an amazing experience at Cathedral Rock hike.

To Climb Or Not To Climb?

By KLGourley |

To get to the trail for Cathedral Rock in June we had to use the free shuttle service, but I found it very convenient. We did make it to the top of the Cathedral Rock Trail, or rather, as high as you can go to reach the end of the trail. It really wasn't what I'd call a hike, it's more of a rock climb. There are some parts where climbing is definitely not for the faint of heart - anybody with a slight fear of heights may find a couple of parts intimidating. However, once you reach the trail's end it is a beautiful lookoff. It is well worth the hike up if you are physically able to do so. Although not everybody does it, I wore hiking books here and I strongly encourage it. Bring plenty of water if you are hiking here in Summer. There is very little shade to shield you from the sun along the way.

Sedona is Beautiful. ❤️

By Stephanie B |

Everyone needs to visit here once in a lifetime. Breathtaking views, perfect for awesome pictures. If you visit this place don't miss to light a candle for your loved ones.

worth the walk

By KandiH63 |

The Cathedral Rock Vortex has a flat path to it, and it such a beautiful walk. We have enjoyed this every time we come.

Very Unique

By Evelina62 |

This is the first chapel I have seen suspended on rocks on top of this gorgeous red mountain. We drove to a parking area just below the hike, and then hiked 20 minutes uphill to the chapel. I had just had a foot surgery a month before, and I was able to do this hike quite comfortably. Spend a few quiet, serene minutes in the chapel and walk around the grounds. The views from all directions are spectacular.

Gorgeous hike

By morbea56 |

This hike was so much fun! There are tricky parts where it’s easier to use your hands but overall it’s a moderately difficult hime suitable for a variety of ages. You are rewarded with an incredible sunset view at the top if you time it right!

Beautiful Scenery

By mparker11 |

This is our fifth time to Sedona and we are always amazed at the beautiful scenery and Cathedral Rock.

Stunning sunset from up top

By Sid S |

Went in the late afternoon and lucked into seeing a gorgeous sunset. The hike up was tricky and required a bit of daring, but it was fun and well worth it.

Beautiful and Challenging Hike

By StackyMaryland |

Beautiful hike if you can find parking as this is one of the most popular hikes in Sedona. The earlier you get there, the better, and be sure to bring water and light snack is it's very hot even in the morning. As I was solo, my only regret was that I wished I had someone with me as a back up and then I could have gone more than halfway up. Hiking up wasn't the problem but my concern was getting back down through the one section of rock you need to scramble up (I'm short and was solo so I didn't want to get stuck with a potential for injury). Regardless, got some great photos and a good workout. Would love to go back.

Sunrise Spectacular

By Runningmom |

Beautiful place to watch the sunrise! A popular place for proposals, as well. Hike was not as difficult as we expected (both my husband and I are in our late 50's). This hike is very crowded. The parking lot fills up quickly and the road gets jammed up because of it, so get there early to prevent frustration. We hiked CR during Covid and were pleasantly surprised that many people pulled up their face masks in consideration of others in the crowded spots. Overall, one of the most beautiful areas in Sedona.

Beautiful, not too difficult hike

By SMC |

My wife and I were in Sedona for our 10th anniversary. This hike was one of the highlights for us. We went to the top after only planning on doing half of it - because it was so beautiful and not too hard. The view at the top was worth it!

Unbelievable views... if you can make it to the top

By Nick B |

This hike, although relatively short, is pretty intense for novices. The terrain is rocky and steep, but views from the top are more than worth the climb. It is absolutely breathtaking. Make the climb near the golden hours and you’ll be in awe.

You have to see this. Its natural formations will make you at a loss for words.

By Kathleen Warren G |

Just looking at a photo fails to do justice to this magnificent formation. Its gradation in colors and ever changing edges and angles demand that you get as close to it as possible. Great photo ops from every corner. You are reminded that Mother Nature is the worlds greatest sculpture and painter.

Beautiful

By MatthiasJ |

Believe the other reviews that suggest you getting there EARLY. I went on a Sunday and this is how I experienced the situation progress:
- 5:30 am: Arrival. Parking lot already half full with several cars pulling in before and after me.
- 7:30 am: Return to car after the hike. At least 10 cars waiting in line on the street for parked cars to leave
- 10:30 am: Driving by after breakfast in town. The police had closed access to the road leading to the parking to everyone except abutters

Specular view

By Gixxer |

Due to being busy and not many parking spots at the trailhead, they closed off Back O'Beyond road which leads to the trailhead. We parked at Little horse trail head just south on 179. Had to walk about 1 mile on Back O' Beyond road down a steep hill to the trailhead. This trail is a little over 1 mile round trip. However it is very technical and very steep with smooth rocks with some heights. Make sure you have good grip on your shoes. One section is very narrow and steep where there is only room for single file either going up or coming down. Take water with you preferably in a back pack so your hands are free. However, once you get to the top and along the way the view is absolutely beautiful. Some say this is a perfect place to see a sunset so it may get busy around that time. Also been known a vortex zone so take a breather and relax once you get to the top. We had to rush a bit since it was around sun set and wanted to get done before it got dark.

Amazing!

By Bruce B |

This was maybe my favorite hike of our entire trip and hands down one of the most gorgeous landscapes I've ever seen. If you can only do one hike in Arizona, this is the one to do!

Beautiful!!

By Crystal C |

We started our trip with this hike. We are not experienced hikers and some parts were definitely challenging but I am so glad we did this.

To visit it I recommend comfortable clothing, tennis shoes and water.

By Ricardo Ortiz G |

We made the mistake of visiting it with small children and it is a lot of walking and climbing, anyway we chose a place where they could play and we had a very good view of the place.

Just do it

By Mrs.Coop |

My husband tried to talk me out of this hike because the photos make it look steeper than it is and I take blood thinners so he was nervous for me but when we got there we ended up going all the way to the top. We arrived on a Wednesday at 6:30. Plenty of parking! And only a few others there. This was awesome because we were able to take our time without feeling rushed by other people. Especially when we got to the harder parts. It took us a lot longer than it says to do the hike because we took our time taking in the beauty of it all. If your on the fence try it. When I got to the top I felt so accomplished and we even hiked up further that the end of trail. If you go left at the end of trail sign. You can get up even further. It was a nice break we ate out snacks up there and then ventured down.

Rock climbing

By DMS94510 |

Parking can be challenging.
Restroom at the start.
Do NOT attempt this trail with a young child in a backpack or vest type carrier.

It's a challenging hike that is more like rock climbing in some areas.

Amazing views! Go for it.

Great for sunset!

By Maggie C |

This might just be my favorite Sedona hike. The payoff at the top is just incredible! The hike itself is a bit technical with some fairly sleek rock faces and some narrow footholds along the well-marked trail. It's just super fun!! Do it. You'll be glad - and proud - you did.

Cathedral/Templeton Trail

By DavidandKathy123 |

Start at the Cathedral Rock TH but when you see the Templeton trail sign, go right, instead of climbing up Cathedral Rock. We did it in the morning and it was actually very cool requiring a hoody. This was a leisurely hike with a small overlook before it heads down to the creek. The rushing creek was absolutely beautiful and since we were there early at about 8am, we had the whole place to ourselves. Great place for pictures. The hike was 2.2 miles roundtrip. I highly recommend this hike.

More than a challenge

By Kerry M |

This is rated as a challenging hike. It is not a hike! It is a rock scramble and it is hard! The views are amazing but go early because it gets hot!

Beautiful hike

By Mark S |

This is a beautiful hike starting on the road. But be aware starting early in the day, the parking lots fill quickly. You will likely have to park pretty far away if you come after 10. It is a family friendly beautiful hike with any number of places to turn around when tired. Not hard.

Moderate hiking halfway up

By txchic |

If you want to get a parking spot at one of 2 lots that hold only about a dozen cars each, you have to arrive around 6:00 AM or after 8:30 AM. The hiking is fairly easy to moderate until you get about halfway up, then it becomes climbing. Great views even halfway up.

Great Hike and Awesome Views

By Karen Z |

Absolutely LOVED this hike and the views over the canyon from the top. Downside is that it is EXTREMELY crowded. (arrived before 7 and no parking so had to come back in the heat of the day) If you can avoid the crazy crowds, this is a must-see in Sedona.

An enjoyable hike with great views

By Rick G |

We did this hike as it was suggested from a hiker who posted his experience on All Trails. All Trails said, as did the reviewer, that the hike was 7.5 miles. THIS IS NOT THE CASE. Looking at the trail map located at the trail head, the hike is closer to 11 miles and it took us (75 and 72 years old) 5 hours to complete. We would rate the hike as moderate in difficulty but we did have to carefully negotiate the downhill portion of Hiline (sometimes scooting on our butts). There are parts of Hiline where you need to find marks on the rock path (light color/white) so you can find your way. The views are wonderful throughout. Even though it was longer than we expected, we enjoyed ourselves. We went clockwise (Yavapai Point parking lot to Kaibab Trail, LEFT on Slim Shady (clockwise), RIGHT on Hiline, Right on Baldwin, Right on Templeton, Right on Slim Shady, back to Kaibab Trail to Yavapai parking).

Beautiful Hike

By Lisa K |

If your looking for an easy hike this is one that you'll not want to miss out on. Beautiful view and easy to get to.

Beautiful colors and rock shapes

By Jean-Marc D |

Beautiful trail to do very early in the morning given the often untenable heat in Sedona between 10 am and 5 pm. Beautiful photos to make for amateurs. Few parking spaces before the Trail Check-out, an extra reason to get up early!

Highlight of Sedona hiking

By Gwen |

If you are a hiker, Cathedral Rock is a must do trail. Go on a dry day to scale the rocks to get to a beautiful view on top.

One of the best hiking experiences in Sedona!

By Photohoarder |

Trails for all levels and killer views wherever your turn to make this one of the best hiking spots in Sedona. If you go during the weekend you can take advantage of the free Sedona trolley and even arrive in the afternoon. Otherwise go very early during the week, parking lot is tiny.

Beautiful View, Challenging Hike

By Make Memories |

This hike is challenging and has a lot of scrambling to get to the end of the trail. We went around sunset and it was worth it from the top. There were several times I didn't think I could keep going, the kids seemed to have an easier time climbing. I would definitely wear hiking shoes b/c the red rock can be very slippery at times and drop offs steep.

Breathtaking

By darenpadgett76 |

The hike up was great. It gets steep about halfway up. But worth it. Should be experienced in hiking and be sure to have hiking boots and water.

Worth the climb but a parking nightmare

By Butch U |

I thought it was a great hike. Good scrambling areas. At the top, not too crowded. Parking is the worst part. Smart move if lots are full is drop off your group at trailhead, and go back up and park at the nearby lot. The ranger will give you the name. It will add about a mile or so each way but still worth it and who knows, maybe someone will give you a ride up the hill to your car. Worth doing

Great Trail. Go early and keep going to the top!

By Mike F |

We got to the cathedral rock trailhead at 6:09 am and the car in front of us got the last spot. We then looked up some options and found the Baldwin trailhead for additional parking. It was about a 15 min drive and there was only one other car there. This adds a couple miles to the trip but was worth it. Took us about 2.5 hours to hike the entire 4 mile trail going to the top of cathedral rock.

This was an easy trail and even the hardest part with scrambling up the rocks wasn’t too hard. Worth the extra effort to get to the top.

Beautiful trail. Must do in Sedona.

By Avijit |

Highly recommended. Go early in the morning to avoid crowd. Be aware that the rocks can be bit slippery. This hike itself is pleasant and it is not steep. The parking lot was closed so we had to park at nearby horsehead trail and walked 10 mins to Cathedral.

Adventure!

By Chad Bauer |

Incredible. Not too long but will challenge you with elevated climb. The views are surreal and unbelievable!

Top Hike — Go For Sunriise

By FoxTravelers |

Based upon recommendations in other reviews, we arrived at 5:30 am and were on the trail at 5:35. There was a group of about 7 people also, but that was it. This is a moderate hike with some climbing using hands and feet,

Extremely Challenging - Please Read

By KevfromKY |

This trail is HARD and a little scary! Your experience will fall into one of these buckets:

- Inexperienced hiker/climber with fear of falling or slipping on rocks: you will most likely stop 1/3 of the way up. But that’s ok, about 50% of the people ended up stopping.

- Inexperienced hiker/climber that can handle fear: you will get scared during the difficult middle section and question yourself, but you will continue and reach the top. You will again be challenged, but you will make it done. You will be proud of yourself!

- Experienced hiker/climber: you will enjoy it and so just fine.

Spectacular

By TS |

Loved it! Definitely a bit of a cross between rock climbing and hiking... I'm amazed at how young some of the kids we saw on the path were (especially at the end of the trail). The trail is well marked and the sights are stunning. Well worth the trip and effort involved! I almost gave up when reaching the crevice that you have to go straight up but after seeing one gentleman with a cane, 2 with sandals, and speaking with a gal that assured me it looked worse than it was - I gave it a shot (she was right!). Closer to the top you get to stairs which I was very thankful for! While going up took effort and mental fortitude, going down took a lot of focus and, for me, a bit of a crab walk/slow scootch down. Others were vastly quicker up and down - it's just not something I'm very used to doing. Overall took us about an hour maybe 1.5 up and down shockingly.

It's beautiful but parking sucks

By Kelly21830 |

I got there a little after 9am and all the parking spaces were already taken. I didn't feel like driving wherever it was I had to go, so I left and hiked around Courthouse Butte.

Memorable hike!

By SoCalluv2travel |

We hiked with my kids 10 and 13. They absolutely loved it. Especially the parts where they needed to use their hands to climb the 45 degree portion. We really enjoyed the views once at the top.

There is one bathroom at the parking lot which was pretty gross. Try and go before you get there!

They close the road once the parking lot is full. My advice is to drive by again. We were going to go somewhere else and when we crossed the road to Cathedral again, it was open. So you never know!

THIS ROCK IS A MUST CLIMB

By HD |

Cathedral Rock is amazing and you must climb it, even for a little bit, If you reach the top, it's an amazing view! You won't regret it. The rock is spectacular!!

Gorgeous!!

By Foodpolice77 |

This was our most challenging hike but it paid off the best also!! Pretty steep trail- probably shouldn’t try it unless your in descent shape. Once you get to the summit it is incredible! Lots of great picture opps. Loved it!!

Beautiful Sedona Views!

By BNCorder |

This was our favorite hike! The view from the top was the best view we saw in/of Sedona. It is a scramble and is not for everyone. The trail is not overly hard, but if you feel unsteady on your feet, this will not be for you. We passed several people who backed out and that is okay! It has several sections where you can start the climb and then just stop and enjoy the view if you do not wish to go further. One section is a small climb up a tighter crevice, but doable for an average hiker. We did see a rattlesnake on this trail. We hiked on a day the shuttle was running. It was very easy and quick to catch the shuttle with barley any wait.
