I'm going to get my only complaint out of the way first. The fee to enter the park is higher ($9 per car) than most parks I've been to and no discount for seniors or military, only a $2 discount for Indiana residents. However, we hiked several trails and I actually found them to be a bit easier than the trail map indicated. We saw 3 waterfalls on our hike. If you plan to go through the railroad tunnel, be sure to take a good flashlight. It's very dark, rocky and wet! We were allowed to drive through the campground to check it out for future use. We was even given a map and encouraged to mark our favorite spots. Very nice looking campground. Another nice thing about the park is its location. Just minutes, like about 5, from the historic district.

I live in northern Indiana where it is flat everywhere you look. I needed a change of scenery in the worst way so I drove to the park after having lunch with a friend in Indianapolis. It did not disappoint. I did a solo hike over a few of the trails. Altogether I hiked about 4 hours. Trail 8 was pretty grueling but I made it and the breathtaking views were well worth the uphill battle. It was well worth the 3.5+ hour drive to get back home. I definitely want to go again...perhaps in the fall.

We stayed overnight in the Inn (see separate review) and hiked in the afternoon and the morning. The trails are well marked and provide a lot of variety and beautiful scenery. Some thoughts from our time there: Trail 2 through the creek bed was a fantastic hike IF the bed is relatively dry (as it was for us) and you don't mind a more rugged trail (you walk on rocks the whole time). This trail had an incredible view of the big falls at the end of it. Trail 7 gives the easiest access to view the two main falls. My kids liked Trail 5 the best. It's moderately rugged and winds along the canyon side. But the highlight is the tunnel through the side of the canyon. It's pretty easy-going as far as caving. You have to bend over if you're over 5 feet tall for about 1/3 of the cave. I'm 6'2" and I made it with relatively little inconvenience. The whole cave takes maybe 10 minutes to go through and you can see the light for one of the two entrances MOST of the time. In the middle you will need a light of some sort however. We used our cell phone flashlights which worked fine. No bats in the cave.

Hiking is invigorating along some beautiful trails up steep hills. Trails 5 and 6 are especially challenging with some beautiful views of Clifty and Tunnel Falls.

When the park removed the stairs down to the bottom of the falls for safety reasons the charm and beauty of the visit was eliminated. That is too bad. Someone just lacked the creativity and expertise to keep what could have remained a fun visit to a dull one.

Visited Clifty Falls State Park by Madison, IN this past July 2019. It is a quiet beautiful park just north east of Madison, IN. There a e hiking trail and easy to get to falls and more difficult. Very picturesque with many photo ops. The lodge is in the middle of the park with great rooms and fine dinning. For some it might seem a bit on the pricy side but well worth it for the person wanted quiet and close to nature.

If you want a nice place to relax around the water falls and brooks, this is the place.

Not to mention the gorgeous views of the river and Kentucky from high above.

What's great about Clifty Falls is you don't have to walk very far to see the falls themselves. There's a view of the Big Clifty Falls within walking distance from the parking lot and another more distant view from an observation point along the road. There are also views of Madison and the Ohio River from the lodge at the south end of the park. One of the more beautiful state parks in Indiana.

My family and I took a few hours off to visit and hike some of the trails, and ended up staying the whole day! We were very impressed with the beauty of this State Park.

We went on two different guided hikes with a ranger, who was very friendly and informative about the area. I would highly recommend attending a ranger program while visiting, it will only improve upon your stay.

There is actually a lot of hilly and rocky terrain here, so much we were surprised at all the steep ups and downs. So much so, the ranger told us that hikers come here to train for the Appalachian Trail because of the elevation changes. Bring your broke in hiking boots and water, you're going to need them!

Many people go to see the waterfalls. The park’s waterfalls change depending on the season and weather, cycling from a gentle mist to a roaring plunge, and in wintertime, a frozen titan. Winter and spring are the best time to view them.

The ranger also told us about the very scientific, but interesting, history of Cliffy. The creeks in Cliffy's stony water beds are littered with fossil remnants, telling of a long vanished marine ecosystem that was teeming with life. Want a free history lesson? Go here!

By far, we had the most fun in the 1852 Railroad Tunnel. This was our second guided hike, and our favorite. I highly recommend going to the Tunnel, but I also highly recommend wearing shoes that you don't mind ruining, as the floor is normally very wet, slippery, and muddy. Plus, it's very slippery, and VERY dark. Bring a flashlight, you really can't see anything! The Tunnel is open to the public from May to the end of October. The rest of the year it's closed to protect hibernating bats from "WNS" (White Nose Syndrome). It's really sad how many bats are dying because of this horrible disease. The least we can do is take precautions to help stop it from spreading.

We would reccomend this State Park for everyone!

I'd heard great things about Clifty Falls but I was disapointed. To start with its $9 entrance fee if your out of state. I recommend getting a map before you come as the one they give you is a very poor copy and hard to read. Some of the trails look like they connect when they dont. If you just take the trails to see the waterfalls the trail is pretty short but if you try to hike between them it can be very rough trip. The trails are very rought with rocks and lots of tree roots sticking up. You will need some more durable hiking shoes or your feet with be hurting. The trails are also very steep in places. Even what they considered moderate were pretty tough. The falls all were unspectacular with very little water flowing. It rained about a week ago but they must drain off quickly. I also could not find a way to the base of any of the falls and the view from above was pretty far off or blocked by tree's. I think you have to take trail 2 to get to the base and that is a longer rougher hike acording to the map. If you live close its a nice forest to get out but I wouldnt make a long trip to get here. I did not have any trouble reading the maps but I ran into a few people who did and were far from where they thought they were as well as several people making the long trek back up the road because they did not want to hike back up through the rough trail. Make sure to remember how far you go that you have to get back to the parking lot. There is also a nice view of the Ohio river from the observation tower but its somewhat ruined by half the view being of a coal fired power plant at the base of the park. Probably the most fun was walking through the tunnel. It can get wet in the middle so again good shoes and a flash light but it only takes about ten minutes to walk through.

Great park lots of well marked / maintained trails. Definitely a lot of ups and downs - wear sturdy shoes - lots of photo opportunities

Had Thanksgiving dinner at the Inn. The dinner was great w/a large variety from salads to dessert. Spent the weekend camping. The camp ground was peaceful as only a handful of others were camping as well. Great scenery

We spent three nights camping with friends at Clifty. Stayed in sites 33 and 32 which are both on a loop which provided some privacy. Restrooms/shower house was clean but the shower curtains aren't long enough to keep water from getting by so place your items at the far end of the bench. Hiking trails were rough in spots, but we love a challenge! Wear good shoes and remember that the soil has clay in it and can be slippery. Be certain to take a flashlight with you so you can pass through the old railway tunnel. Look for salamanders, spiders, toads and a possible bat or two in the cave. Save your hike for a day after rain so the falls will show their true beauty. Be sure to drive into Madison to see the architecture, visit the antique shops and the other historic sites.

great park also has lodging although we did not stay. nature center & observation tower. four waterfalls great hiking but not much water right now. has a very dark tunnel where bats hybernate they suggested to walk thru but we didn't i'm not a fan of bats.very large park you drive to each fall then hike down good trails lots of picnic areas

Especially after a good rainfall, Clifty Falls State Park is the perfect place for an easy hike to see multiple waterfalls. Situated above the Ohio River just outside Madison, this state park is easy to get in and out of in that it has two entrances/exits, one atop the hill and one below. One of my favorite places to visit in the Madison area.

Spent the night at Clifty Falls Inn. The staff was friendly & welcoming. The room/bed was comfy and the Inn amenities were great. I got the room w/ breakfast included option. The restaurant was excellent, with scenic views of the Ohio River out every window. The wait staff was friendly and welcoming and the food was cooked to order and delicious.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Clifty Falls and our stay at Clifty Inn! Mother Nature at its best!

By Brian M |

First let me start by saying as you are pulling into the entrance there is a power plant across from the entrance with smoke pouring out. So I was a little nervous to say the least at that point. I pull in and was charged for parking even though I had a reservation to camp there. After that you drive along wooded roads and cliffs which was beautiful. I finally get to the campgrounds area and the attendant was quite rude while checking in. I get to the campsite that I reserved and it once again was a beautiful area. An hour after we were there we were informed the bathroom right by us was closed due to flooding sewage (this was one of the reasons we reserved this spot). She went on to say that they would have it fixed in the morning and we should use the other bathroom which was about a 1/8 of a mile or so. That sucked but wasn't the worst thing. We then bought wood from them which is what you have to do since you can't use yours. It of course is expensive for what you get but it's camping so that happens. I try to start a fire with the wood I bought there and it was horrible wood which was moist from the plastic wrap they had it in (which kept the moisture in). So that was a waste of money. Then I go to use the grill that each site has and at the lowest setting of the grill is a couple of feet at least from the ground. Threw a half bag of charcoal under there and lit it but since it was so far from the grill it was completely useless. More money wasted because I had to throw the food out after a couple of hours trying to cook it. Yes I have been camping plenty of times before and know how to start a fire and grill. So we decide to go to bed early to get a fresh start in the morning. There were dogs barking till 4:30 in the morning non stop. Yes this does happen while camping but mixed with the other issues it was intensified. So we finally fall asleep around 4:30 and at 7 am one of the rangers was driving around on a gator/4 wheeler to check permits on each camping post. No big deal usually but what he was driving was the loudest 4 wheeler imaginable. Going back and forth for an hour or so. So we decided to go into town to get some breakfast and some grocery shopping done. We get back around 11 and the bathroom still isn't fixed and wasn't going to be fixed and now they have no idea when it would be fixed. We finally had enough of this and I went to the check in gate to ask if this was typical and she responded by being rude as can be. So we checked out 12 hours after getting there even though we had 3 more days reserved. I would never go back (even to see the beautiful area and waterfalls) and would definitely not recommend due to the way things were run and the ignorant people that worked there.

Not much water going over the falls today, but great park and lots of good hiking. Make sure that you give yourself plenty of time to do all of the trails. Well worth the admission.

By Nita S |

Perfect place to have peace and relax. We did stay in the newer part and on the ground floor with a patio. The "stacks" on the river do make noise. But the view is incredible. Love seeing the fog over the river in the evenings. Totally love the hot tub and pool. The food is pretty good too.

Went here for a day visit and only hiked one trail, but had an enjoyable time. For the time of year we were there, there was no fee to enter.
When you go in, there is a shop that also has a hotel and restaurant. We didn't buy anything or stay at the hotel or eat at the restaurant.
The park seems very clean, with nicely paved roads, good signage and some nice waterfalls.
It is one or two day activity.

By bnauman495 |

This was a great pit stop on the way to Louisville. We were able to see all 4 waterfalls within an hour or so. none are too bad of a hike from the parking areas, even less if you move the car around. I would recommend going after a day of rain, that way the falls are flowing well.

10/29/25 We camped 1 night in site 40 which was a little short for our 32 ft. camper and dually pick up truck but we made it work. The guy at the main gate gave us great directions to get to the campground, "take 2 Louie's and a righty-tighty". LOL Since we were just staying here 1 night on our way to TN, we went for a hike. We parked by the playground at the North Gate and started at the Trail 8 trailhead. It was a quiet rugged with lots of stairs, mud and tree roots. We turned left onto the trail that took us to the Creek by Trail 2. When we reached the creek, there is a sign over the creek giving directions to the trails. It didn't help us much. We turned left onto Trail 2 which is actually the creek and since the water was high, we had to jump from rock to rock to make it up stream. Coming back to the sign over the creek where we started, we were looking across the creek for Trail 5. We couldn't find it! We hiked all over in the brush looking for it for 30 min. The map is not right. It looks like you can go across the stream and to the right a little to get to Trail 5. That is not the case. So if you go back to where trail 8 arrived to the creek and you are standing on Trail 8, and you are looking at the creek, you need to turn right and walk the creek, and at the Y in the creek, take the 90 degree turn to the right. Keep walking down stream on the creek and eventually you will see Trail 5 on your left. There are no signs. The water was high so we had to get our feet wet to cross. We found lots of FOSSILS in the creek! We followed Trail 5 slowly climbing upward - there were a couple splits in the trail without signs but we luckily took the right ones. We did see a sign and followed it to the LEFT to the tunnel heading north. We came to the tunnel and even though it was closed due to a rock slide, we chose to explore. We found cave salamanders, frogs, newts and made our way to the other end. This is where there was a massive rock/mud slide and it basically blocked the other entrance. We walked back through the cave to get back to the trail. Bring a flashlight!
We found the beautiful Tunnel Falls - was nice to take a break and enjoy the sound. There is a little wooden ladder we climbed down and continued on Trail 5. We had to walk in the water to get across the creek. Eventually it turned into Trail 6.
Here is where it got really confusing again. The paper map is not right again. Thank goodness I had my Map My Fitness app going and it helped us navigate taking a LEFT onto Trail 7, crossing the creek many times, staying to the right and the many Y's, and finally making our way to back to the Playground parking lot. Our hike was 3.7 miles and it took us 2 hours 45 min (but some of that was us being lost and walking back and forth). The trail was very hilly and very tiring. But well worth it! The leaves were all changing, the creek was beautiful, the waterfalls were flowing, and even though it was raining, we truly enjoyed this hike.

This park has plenty of trails, s lodge, and a restaurant. There are shelter houses and charcoal grills for outings. Pay the$7.00 ($9.00 out of state) fee and enjoy a day or two.

By Lia B |

This park is amazing. The paths are easy to follow but some are a little narrow with steep drop offs. Wear good shoes but expect the walk to be worth the view. The overlooks and waterfalls here are just beautiful. I would be cautious with young kids but teenagers and adults will love it !!!!

By JStarkey |

We pretty much went just to see the waterfalls and unfortunately they haven't had much rain in the area, so there wasn't much to the any of the falls. It is a great place to hike, but the trails are really rugged, narrow and many roots to navigate through. There are many steps to most of the falls. The main falls was the easiest to get to, not far from the parking lot and paved. It actually had the most water running at the time. We didn't make the trek to the bottom. We saw it from the overlook near it and another pullover spot down the road where you could see more of it from a further distance. We did manage to hike down to the uncompleted railroad tunnel, but it seemed way too low to walk through, but I did hike to both ends. The north end seems a lot shorter to get too and seemed a little more scenic. I wish there was more information on the trail signs and there were no brochures to be found. We had a great time, even though it was warm. Bring plenty of water, some of the trails are long as well as rugged. Overall, a really nice park. I would just recommend scheduling your visit in the spring or you're sure the area got a good rainfall.

By jdub510 |

If you like to get eye level with giant belching smokestacks, this is the place for you! Since the waterfalls were less impressive than a garden hose, it pains me to say the ludicrous smokestacks were more noteworthy.
The woods and canyons are pretty for sure, but placing this odious eyesore next to such sylvan natural wonder is the stupid sort thing I thought we only did back home in Illinois.

By Addie B |

Site 8 good at least it was not swampy as we did have rain on Fri eve and Sun early am. Restrooms (Women's) not enough toilet paper within the time frame
of cleaning, otherwise they were clutter-trash free. Breakfast at Clifty Inn was very good, a little pricey for the Buffet ($15.99) but all was hot and fresh! View was amazing of the Ohio River from the dining area while we ate. We will come back. :) Falls were also breathtaking!

By laurabelle2003 |

This park was lots of fun to walk around, see the views of falls and nature. The trails were nice to walk on but not smooth. Lots of up and downs but great paths! Beautiful!

By GML2014 |

Southern Indiana has so much to offer. This park has nice trails, waterfalls, pavilions for events, etc... Great place to have a great time!

By Richard F |

This is a wonderful State park and it is very close to Louisville so it is an easy drive over to spend a full day. We took a picnic lunch and spent the day walking some of the trails and hiked over to see the Falls. It was very pretty and the hike was fairly easy to manage. They have some clean picnic areas with tables so be sure and take advantage of them. Check out their website before you go as you will get information and a downloadable map. We plan to return again soon.

This park is a switch from driving through corn fields across Indiana. It has a narrow valley and sheer cliffs. We were going to hike to a waterfall but the hikes were listed as rugged or very rugged. We are more of the easy to moderate hiker types. We did do a short, easy hike through the woods just to stretch our legs. There are 4 o5 5 different falls. It is a pretty drive around the park. There is a swimming pool and an Inn. You can hike into the gorge but be aware because water can be released from dam. There is a campground and a picnic area.

My family rode up to Clifty Falls State Park last weekend and it was a very relaxing place. There are trails for every level of ability, playgrounds and awesome places to picnic! You will find people of all ages , walking, playing in the parks and just taking in the spectacular views!

We had a great day at Clifty Falls State Park. I was able to push my wife's wheelchair on trail 7 that is handicap accessible. She had a great view of the falls that was full of spring rain water. It was gorgeous!!!

By RockSteam |

My wife and I spent about five hours hiking through the park during a weekend getaway. The weather was perfect, and we enjoyed the hiking trails very much. Note that if you go that many of the trails (but certainly not all) would not be suitable for young (under 10?) children. The "rugged" and "very rugged" trails are just that with significant hikes either down into the creek valley or out of it. Some of the natural stone steps are a couple of feet apart and a good challenge for an adult hiker (in reasonably good shape).

We hiked parts of Trails 2, 5, 6, 7 & 8 which was a great workout. I would recommend making sure that you have water with you (especially if it's above 70 and sunny). The waterfalls were somewhat underwhelming from a volume perspective, but that experience would likely be different after a good rainy period. I will say that the fall heights were impressive at 60-80 feet.

Although we didn't stay on property both the lodge and campgrounds looked very nice, and we may head back to camp later in the season.

I think you can hike all the trails with a weekend stay, but can get a good sampling of the trails (as well as a good workout) with a four hour visit.

Suggest staying at the Inn in the park. Awesome, with beautiful view. Nice rooms, great restaurant, elevator, gift shop, plenty of parking. A very nice indoor pool with ramp, and a jacuzzi.

By Barbara and Dav... D |

I was finally (weeks ahead of time) able to secure a room at the inn. We walked a trail the first day (very nice) and shopped in Madison the next day. Lots of history in this area. Fun state park

By BMWilson723 |

We were a little bummed about the burn ban when we visited and the complete lack of falls at Clifty Falls, but the park was still beautiful and completely enjoyable! We’ll definitely plan to go back when there’s water in the falls.

The camp sites were a bit too manicured for my taste. The plots were grass covered and mowed with very little tree coverage. We’ve got a list of better covered plots for the next time and we may even reference the satellite view of google maps next time.

By Ken |

We were most impressed by the beauty of Clifty Falls park. The steep hills and the rock outcroppings give it a feel unlike much of Indiana. The trails are a bit rugged, but make for excellent hiking. The park is clean and well maintained. The Falls were nice even though the water level is a bit low this time of year.

By AaronFWA |

We drove through the park but too hot to take a trail. Could not see the falls at all. Nice restaurant though

By Mary C |

Although, we were in the park during the dead of winter, the park still holds some natural beauty. The falls were frozen and it was a very dreary day when we drove through the park but we enjoyed the scenery. We saw two deer and the cliffs were interesting. There are many lookout points for pictures.

By Shucker73 |

If you’re going to stay at the Clifty Inn, spring for the river-view rooms. The view of Madison and the Ohio River are excellent. It was a little foggy when we stayed which gave Madison a “post card” look. Just ignore the IKE plant to the right. Notice how clean the smoke is from this coal burning plant is. Clifton Falls has great roads for bike riding and trails for hiking. The deer and turkey populations are much higher than I remember from my youth. The food at the lodge is just ok, in my opinion. I wouldn’t make a trip just to eat there. The rooms are slightly outdated but very clean. Staff was friendly. I’d definitely go back.

By blueskies285 |

Nice inn and dining room at the inn. Park is a great place to hike. Everyone eats at the buffet because the dining room was only staffed by 2 waitresses and it was full of people. It would be a nice family trip..

By Nicole J |

Great camping facilities (showers, toilets, firepits, and tables all readily available)! Nice hiking and overall good atmosphere. Would return!

By Missy L |

We came in on Friday, hiked about 9 miles. The park was spectacular. We got up on Saturday after a large amount of rain, hiked 6 more miles. The falls were just gorgeous. We will definitely be back.

By Sandra D |

Love staying at Clifty Inn State Park. Very clean and nice inn. Food is great and the staff is very nice. We go there quite often and always enjoy our stay. Also, lots to do in the area with historic Madison and Charlestown State park and Louisville only 1 hour away. Has nice trails for hiking and can bike ride this park, not real hilly.

By SMJ |

The trails to see the falls is short and often crowded, but worth seeing once. The other trails to the smaller falls are great and have some beautiful scenery. Trail 2 (which runs up the creek) is great. We only hiked a bit of it but I'm looking forward to going back on a hot day and hiking all the way up to the falls.

By KEC13-2 |

My husband and I have wanted to go to Clifty Falls for the last 10 years and finally made it this weekend. The trails are VERY rugged, especially #2. The park is beautiful. We want to come back soon. Hopefully we can stay at the Inn.

By BreezySummerIII |

December was not a good time to visit. No water, no falls. I think we'll give it another try this spring.

By Mike B |

Absolutely beautiful area. Great camping. Hiking, shower house very clean park. Playgrounds for kids. Swimming pool.

By Bengalsroar |

Greta campground with many sites to fit all needs. Bathrooms are very clean and updated. Greta place to stay when visiting functions in Madison Indiana along the river.

Love this park! Miles of interesting and challenging trails with a lot to see from waterfalls to caves. We highly enjoyed our visit.

By Kathy V |

This is an Indiana State Park with a lovely, cozy Inn looking out on the Ohio river. We watched barges pass by as we had our meals. There are falls to view and many hiking trails. The Inn's restaurant has delicious home cooked style meals. The Inn is about 20 minutes from historic Madison IN were we walked along the Ohio river where hydroplane races have been held. We had a Chinese meal as we walked the streets of downtown Madison. There are many other restaurants as well as shops to stop by and take home a treasure or two! Our favorite state park is Spring Mill but Clifty Falls comes in at a close second.

By Chris R |

We booked two nights here, wondering if there would be enough to do for three days. There is! The hiking trails were great even though the time of year means that the falls don't have a lot of water. The creek did have plenty of water but the creek trail was accessible. The park restaurant featured a BBQ night on the patio, choice of bbq sandwich or ribs, cole slaw and fries, and one beer-local. What a great idea! Those who didn't want to do this could eat in the main dining room but this was such fun, and different from just eating in. This time of year the park is fairly empty which is nice for seeing animals at dusk. The property is well maintained and beautiful, great views of the the Ohio River, trails are easy to follow.

There are just two problems. The Nature Center seemed never to be open and there are no hours posted on the door. We never did get in there. Disappointing. And their "free wifi" does not work very well with iphones. It finally kicked me off and I could not get back on. Prior to that, if I stopped using my phone for a time I had to go through the whole process again to get back on. While we were not there to stay on phones for sure, we did need to keep in touch and it was tough with this wifi. They need to fix this.

By Steve M |

We've been to this park many times. Always enjoyed the hikes. This time it has rained for several hours and the falls were the best we have ever seen them. Hiking was real cool, slippery, and rainy, but better than work any day.

By MrSmithJr |

The park is well kept. We were very happy to see that the trails were very clean. The tunnel was pretty awesome! There are some really good views of the falls from several places. If you like to hike, do it! Some of the trails were nerve wrecking with a three year old in tow but with hand holding and some carrying it worked out just fine for us

By Sarah J |

My husband and I took our three kids to cool off and enjoy our Sunday.. we got there and immediately felt unwelcome and uncomfortable because of the lifeguards… there were two woman lifeguards who were beyond rude and had a weird entitlement complex.. at one point the lifeguard yelled at a handicapped child for holding onto the rail, then said “DO I NEED TO SPELL THIS OUT FOR YOU” the child didn’t understand and it was sickening to watch.

By Sara Jean |

I absolutely love hiking here, camping prices are expensive but it's a nice get away and just relax with nature

By Bluejsong |

We showed up looking to see a lil wildlife (birds mostly) and get in a nature walk. What we found was a great drive around that also offered places to stop and trail walk. Keep in mind the park name is Clifty Falls and cliffs and falls are what you will find. In fact you could fall if not paying attention at times. The cliffs naturally weep so I imagine the amount of local rain determine the falls size at the time of visit. To fully enjoy the park one MUST be prepared to go up and down a LOT of steps and stairs! While in very in awe of the beauty I encountered I was also very sore the next two days. The better in shape you are physically the better off you'll be. I didn't get a chance to check out the campgrounds but loved just spending the day there with my family.

By mrjonesii |

This was a little disappointing for me. Especially since I saw Niagara Falls the summer before visiting here. I think I still would've been disappointed. Space to park. Lots of trials if you love nature. There was a pretty nice size shelter where we parked. I "think" there was a restroom as well.

By dkoscher |

Clifty Falls has everything you want in a state park. The waterfalls are beautiful! This state park has quite a few hiking/walking trails. Be careful though, some of the trails are for expert hikers. We learned the hard way!

By CAR |

We love staying at the Clifty Falls Inn. The rooms are updated, with very comfortable beds, microwave and frig so you can bring some of your meals. The breakfast in the dinning room is standard but quite good and affordable.

It is a bit disconcerting to look out and see that huge coal smoke stack. Gosh, what's in the air anyway? Benzine?

We are hikers and Clifty has some of the most rugged trails, if not THE most rugged trails of any of our state parks. You aren't rock climbing, but you are walking on rocks and gravel, so going down can be treacherous, especially if it has rained. One of us slipped and fell right on a knee. And we are all in shape. It is easy to get yourself in trouble if you are thinking you'll just go down a trail for an hour or so. You have to come back up.

If you sprain an ankle, I would not know how they'd get you out. Wear sturdy hiking boots, not sneakers or even running shoes.

We've seen people going down trails in flip flops. NOT a good idea.

I don't think dogs should be allowed on the trails. I like dogs but they get in the way, easily distracted and may pull you down if they want to go after something. When you are trying to stay balanced, holding a dog leash is dangerous. We were on a trail when two families with three dogs were coming down. The dogs were all barking and lunging at each other, and with the kids trying to get out of the way. Really idiotic to think your dog has to go with you everywhere.

Stayed in the campgrounds wonderful staff, walked on several beautiful trails. Falls had a lot of water coming over it which was picture perfect. Definitely will go back.

Very nice park with beautiful views. You can see really nice views of falls and canyons without a rough rugged hike. However there are some long hikes to take if you want to see more views of the park.

By NewillDB |

If you can be so lucky as to visit shortly after a good rainfall, then the falls are nice, but otherwise just a trickle of water over the cliffs. Also note the trails are changed - so you really cannot get close to the base of the falls in most cases - in fact one path was walled off! Be prepared for some rocky paths, we actually ended up hiking back from 8,7,6 on the road !

Beautiful State Park! Different levels of hiking. We enjoyed Trails 6 & 7 not too rugged. On the way back we took the moderately rugged trail 7 (not up all the stairs) and loved the scenery. Took a little longer but was well worth it!!!

This is a pretty big state park with good youth camping facilities and also sites with and without electric. Great trails to see the waterfalls as well. Good place to see some nature and still be close to Louisville for day trips.

My husband & I camped at Clifty Falls State Park for the first time June 6 - 10, 2024. Madison Indiana is a charming small riverfront town just outside of the park. We decided to go in to town to look around & have dinner Saturday night. Dinner was pizza & loaded fries with a side of dill ranch at a local restaurant called The Red Pepperoni. While the pizza was good, the loaded fries were the winner for us. Yum! We also toured the Lanier Mansion. Beautiful home with interesting history! Our tour guide was wonderful & we had a great time. We also went to the Lanthier Winery. It was very small, but we enjoyed tasting some delicious wines & strolling through their small, but very lovely garden with beautiful flowers.
Clifty Falls State Park, while very pretty, isn't for everyone. The hiking trails were all very difficult. We were unable to do any real hiking as I have health problems that keep me from doing things that are strenuous. The trails are also not marked very well once you got past the main signage that indicated the trail number. Hubby & I have ebikes so we did ride those but they do not have any specific biking trails for those of us who like to ride but aren't into mountain biking. Though we did ride our ebikes to the trailheads, we found that only 2 of those trailheads had bicycle racks to lock your bikes. We also did not see any waterfalls flowing while we were at this park. The only time you'll be able to see the waterfalls may be right after it's rained.
The campground is pretty far back into the park, which was alright, but it is uphill to get into it. Once at the campground, we found that the sites were, for the most part, pretty spaced out & most appeard to be fairly level. However, as the sites have no water or sewer, only electric in our loop, another loop has no electric, one would expect the bathhouses to be multiple & useful. While there were 3 bathhouses, 2 on the electric loop & 1 on the non-electric loop, the 2 on the electric loop, that we used, had issues. The 1st of the 2 bathhouses was very old. Usually that is not an issue, however this time it was as the shower stalls looked horrible. Paint was falling off the walls, the lighting was terrible & it just didn't make you feel comfortable. We took 2 different showers in this bathhouse because it was the closet to us. The 1st time we had lukewarm water for about 5 minutes. We thought that the next time would be better, however, the 2nd time we had NO lukewarm water, but instead had a nice cold shower. Ugh!!! I believe this was the fastest I've ever showered in my life! The next two times we showered were in the 2nd bathhouse, which was newer and each shower was a separate door on the outside of the building. They lacked locks that indicated the showers were in use which results in people listening to the door to know if anyone is inside, or knocking on the door, both of which are not fun when you are trying to shower. Luckily, my hubby 3D printed us doorknob signs just for this occasion to put on the outside of the door. As for the actual shower itself, we had high hopes that, as this appeared to be a newer bathhouse, this shower would be much better. Unfortunately for us, we immediately realized that wouldn't be the case. I will say that the water temp was great. However, the drainage was not working so the floor of the room filled up to the door jam with water, the shower heads were painful on your skin, & you had to push a button to make the water come out EVERY 8 SECONDS!!! That's not enough time for the water to get hot before having to push the button again. Before I could even get my hair wet to shampoo, yep, I had to push the button again. And again. And again. I've been to paid bathhouses that are better. At least you get continuous warm water for 4 - 5 minutes straight & you can always add a little more money for more time. At the very minimum, Clifty Falls State Park campground needs to allow campers at least 3 - 5 minutes of water uninterrupted.

All I wanted to do was get a few pictures of the falls on our way through to Louisville. It was $9 to get in and I honestly was fine with the cost of just passing through, we weren't planning to spend more than 30 minutes in the park, and we didn't. I am glad that it appears the money you pay to get into this park actually goes to the upkeep. We were on a motorcycle and I appreciated that the roads were all recently black toped. So we had a pleasant ride through the park. Didn't have to worry about ditching pot holes or uneven pavement while negotiating all the turns. We pulled off the road at trail #5 and hiked down to the falls. Took a few pictures and headed towards the tunnel. We weren't really dressed for all the hiking so we didn't go too far into the tunnel before I bailed and we headed back up to the bike. Again, beautiful park.

Loved the sound of the falling water. Great views of several waterfalls. Trails can be steep for some. Lots of steps, mostly are well maintained.

By sljtba |

This is beautiful park. The views are stunning. There is really something for everyone here: rugged hikes, easy hikes, walks, wide open spaces, playgrounds, campground and an inn with a lovely restaurant.

By MrSimpleMan47150 |

Highly recommend the state park. Lots of hiking trails at different degrees of difficulty. A view of Clifty Falls is definitely worth the trip!

By 723leishac |

We could not have picked a better weekend to go in January. We took advantage of the 2 for 1 stay at the Inn and had an amazing time. The falls in the park were beautiful this time of year with very little traffic to deal with. We took numerous pics of the birds and turkeys in the park. We enjoyed putting together puzzles, the fireplaces, watching the sunrise, exploring the Inn which was all decorated for Valentines Day. The staff, room and cafeteria were great. The Ohio river was active with barges we could watch from our room. The activity all around the smoke stacks was interesting to watch. We will return to Clifty Falls.

By ret1sg82abn |

We hiked to all four falls and had a really good time. Only $7 a car for residents of Indiana. We drove by a very nice pool if you've got the time, also the Inn looked very nice. The trails were well marked and this is a really nice place to spend time in the woods. Great place to exercise as there are a good amount of stairs also.

By David R |

I can deal with kid noise, I can deal with a little noise but this place is out of control. A large group of campers had closed off the roadway, had music blasting. What happened to a quiet evening around a campfire. I can deal with quite a bit of distractions but this is ridiculous! I’d have a more peaceful night in a Walmart parking lot!

By Shelly H |

Went out to the Amish store yesterday, decided since I was so close I would drive on out to Clifty Falls to see its beauty. I got there, paid seven dollar admission. Which was cheaper if you are in Indiana resident. Which I am. I have never been so disappointed. The trees are so grown up, there is literally no view to be had. Can’t see anything through the trees. There was no way to go to the base of the falls. It was so disappointing, and sad. For the price of admission they should at least be able to keep the undergrowth to a minimum and the overgrowth thinned. After all what is a park with a view of the falls that has no view.

By Cynthia K |

This is a state park in Southern Indiana, close to Madison. It's close to the Ohio River, but not next to it. It was established in 1920, so it has good infrastructure.

There's an inn with a restaurant, picnic areas, & trails. The loop drive around the park is beautiful!
The nature center used to be a saddle barn until the 1970s. A tornado went through the area & destroyed a lot of buildings. Trail 1 leads from the nature center to a tower that gives you a view of the power plant & the river.

Camping : 106 electric sites, 63 non - electric. The non electric side gets the beautiful, new bathhouse. Electric sites get 2 dingy old buildings that haven't been updated since the 1960s. They're somewhat clean, but I would definitely wear some sandals when showering. The campground is nice, but small. Make reservations.

The trails: range from moderately rugged to rugged to very rugged. There's 2 that are easy & moderate, but you don't see anything, so why bother?
If you're fit, Trail 8 down to Trail 2 makes a 7.5 mile loop. Trail 2 is up the creek (literally!), so can only be taken when the water's low.
Many of the trails can be made into loops. We did trail 5, parking at the Tunnel Falls parking area. walked down to Trail 4 to Hoffman Falls. To Trail 3 to loop back to trail 5. Maybe 2 miles, but very rugged.

The falls : Well, the summer isn't usually a good time for them, but it rained the night we got here, so they weren't that bad. The problem is, the trails along the canyon don't really give you a very good view. Tunnel Falls is probably the best. If you took trail 2, you might get a better view of Clifty Falls. If you're not a hiker, you may be disappointed.
This is a good state park in Indiana. Definitely in the top 10.

I was just passing through, but stopped at the Inn and visited the gift shop, then found a trail near the nature center to take a short hike and some photography. Staff in the Inn were very friendly and helpful. The first leg of the trail I chose ended at a watchtower overlooking the Ohio River; the view was gorgeous.

Hope to go back to take advantage of some of the other trails.

By darkeyes |

A beautiful state park.
The trails are basically in a canyon to which you have to go down several sets of wooden stairs making Clifty Falls one of the more difficult parks to maneuver for this 67 year old out of shape woman! Most of the state parks I have visited are not so difficult. But for those who can handle it, it's great for hiking.

By John S |

There are 4 waterfalls at the park. One is over 80 ft tall. If you like hiking up creek beds, this is the place for you! The lodge is very nice an has a beautiful view of the Ohio river below. We camped in an RV. The sites are very large with plenty of room between.

By Tom T |

My wife and I decided to add this to a trip to SE Indiana. We are so glad that we did. We went on the guided tour of the falls. The guide was excellent. The group was well over 50 people and she managed it very well. We really enjoyed the Clifty Falls and the Tunnel Falls hike. The scenery, the park and the staff were all great.

By Dan |

What a great park to lose yourself and forget your worries! Very well marked trails. From rugged to easy trails to the falls it is truly a wonderful place to be!

By Teena S |

Even though the falls were very slow everything was beautiful. The nature house was very nice and very friendly and helpful workers.

By Sarah C |

Wonderful time with my teenage daugters. We hiked all the trails successfully and enjoyed trail 3 4 5 7 8 the best. The map was easy to follow but we hiked them faster than we thought the map described

By Lisa K |

The state park was nice, nothing to write home about though. Easy hike to the falls. Not that impressive though. Maybe better after a good rain.

By T_and_J_traveling_journeys |

We visited Clifty Falls State Park for a long weekend. Every staff member we met was very friendly and helpful! The campground was peaceful and quiet, even though it was busy. The campground restrooms were clean and nicely maintained. My only feedback for improvement is two fold: 1) the campsite photos and descriptions don’t quite seem accurate (we picked ours specifically since it said mostly shaded but it was mostly full sun) and 2) the hiking trails could use some better signage, especially around the Hoffman Falls area. We look forward to coming back this fall to see some beautiful foliage.

By Kevin K |

We love to camp at Cliffy Falls State Park. Hiking trails are rugged so a walking stick is helpful. The showers in the campground bath houses were too hot. The water was way too warm. I would not have taken a child in there for a shower. It would have scalded their skin.

By Michael C |

Clifty Falls State Park is one of the best state parks in Indiana. Beautiful scenery, excellent hiking trails, and good place to camp. Clifty Falls has many opportunities for people to experience. There is a nice lodge, hiking trails for many different levels, and the scenery is hard to beat!!!

By Deceived |

This is a very well maintained park. Some of the trails are rugged, but the scenic experience is worth the effort. There are several waterfalls that are very scenic. Some of them go dry or meager in the drier seasons, but when there has been decent rainfall, they are exceptional in their quiet beauty.
You will want to come back here again. Spring and Fall are the best seasons.

By Mary M |

We rented one of their great shelters for the reunion. Wide open space, plenty of tables also a fireplace for those cold nights (we do June). Parking area is huge, a little playground is right their for the little ones, open fields for playing soccer and games. Very reasonable rates. Book early.
Only complaint, NO trash can, No place to take trash to. really ...? Does not make sense to me.

By Susan B |

This park is one of the state's gems. Very beautiful and it has great hiking trails. We were there after Labor Day, so it wasn't crowded.

By jazzy472021 |

Lovely state park. There is a fee- $9 for out of state guests. There are 10 hiking trails that range from moderate to rugged. Parts of the trail(s) have wooden walkways and steps. There is a campground, picnic areas and playgrounds. We hiked to both Big and Little Clifty Falls…you can’t go wrong being out in nature and listening to a waterfall or stream.

By Susan C |

We took a drive from the Evansville area and met friends from Henderson, KY for a 3 day weekend of RV camping. The campground has trees around the periphery but very few trees in the middle. Bath houses are basic, but we didn't use them much. The end of October is popular at the park for leaf peepers, so I found the trails to be a bit overpopulated for my liking, thouh the mordifficult trails were not as crowded. It was pretty dry and we enjoyed the hiking, though some of it is moderately difficult with rocky paths and some steep inclines. We enoyed the tunnel (which was wet and dark!) and the firetower. I would like to return and do the longest hike all the way around the park. It was off season for swimming, but there is a large pool. We went into Madison for a few hours and it is a charming town with many unique shops and eateries, worthy of a full day or two to explore.

By Trisha M |

If you are into camping and hiking just downwind from a power plant this is the park for you. It can be very disconcerting to be hiking down a trail that ends in the attached photo.

By MJS |

Great views of many falls if you can hike it. Only one was accessible, that I recall. Many, many staircases, most of which were just recently redone, were nice. There is one caveat. I'm only 5 ft 3 inches tall on a good day, not terribly short, but not tall. The stairs, even the old ones are built with the first step that is meant for an 8 ft tall person. Most came up to my mid calf and a few almost to my kneecap! For the life of me, I've never seen anything like it. One I had to kneel and pivot to get it up it without a step stool! The park is hard enough with the hills the way it is, why make it harder? Please add a few more steps for the vertically challenged people of the world!

By Justin P |

We visited Clifty Falls to hike with our dog and see the waterfalls. It rained heavily the night before and so the waterfalls were raging, which is good and bad. While the waterfalls were certainly looking their best, the water was way to high to hike in the gorge (trail #2). The view of the waterfalls from the trails along the rim are not very good (mostly blocked by foliage), so ideally you want to visit in moderate water levels, high enough so the falls look good, but low enough that you can hike in the gorge. But it was still a fun hike and we did catch a couple nice seasonal waterfalls that wouldn't normally exist. The old railroad tunnel is pretty cool as well, bring a flashlight if you want to walk through. Overall, a really cool place and I'd like to return when I can hike in the gorge.

By ptnp02 |

Small but very pretty park - most of the trails were rated rugged to very rugged so if mobility issues be aware - we were able to see a couple of the falls without too much exertion

By Sue J |

$9.00 entrance fee, with no discount for seniors, National Parks Pass or even AAA, and not a single waterfall flowing. Highway robbery
Hikes extremely difficult.

By Robby N |

Really enjoyed the scenery in late October. It was our first visit but will be sure to return. Mostly checked out the overlooks but did view the fall from the cave trail.

By candace m |

I’ve been visiting Clifty Falls State Park since the 1979s and I it is a ‘Must Do’ anytime I’m in southeast Indiana! I’ve hiked trails in many National and State parks around the United States and Clifty is one of my favorite. This park is a gem. I visited again this weekend and was very impressed with the maintenance of the trails and facilities. The drive through the park is gorgeous and has several pullouts for observation so even those not interested in hiking can enjoy the scenery and wildlife. Do not miss an opportunity to visit Clifty Falls State Park!

By utwila |

We did a semi-rugged trail #7 to both waterfalls. Was just right for two senior citizens, three young adults and three small boys. We all loved it. The falls are really nice. We would have done more trails but didn't have the time. Nature center is really nice, also, and was open even though it was December.

By weens5 |

Natural wonder!! Lodge is very nice, good food, good people, easy to work with them. Great place to meet and visit with love ones. The view is spectacular.

By Bill D |

Been coming here for over 50 years that should say it all. Excellent hiking, wild life is good and the piece and quite is wonderful ..( note there is a hum from the power plant...lol)

By Ron L |

This is not the biggest park in Indiana, but it is one of our favorites! Lots of hiking on peaceful trails and lots of wildlife to see. We have been going there since our honeymoon in 1970! Great for families, too!

By Rachel H |

First time visiting. Hiking trails were good, falls and park were beautiful! We did trail 7 which was listed as moderately rugged, I thought it was accurately rated. I couldn't imagine a your child walking this trail though, some of the hills and steps were steep and slick in spots.

By Cincyboymom |

We took our boys for a short weekend in late October in hopes of seeing the fall foliage. Unfortunately for us the colors didn't decide to change until a week or so later. It is a very nice park with well-marked hiking trails (about 10 in all). There are varying levels of difficulty and supposedly multiple waterfalls. We loved the varied landscape, the canyons, the tree and river views, & vistas. We were a bit disappointed in the little trickles that were supposed to be the waterfalls but thought perhaps we had just arrived at a drier time of year. Be warned if you have young children that some of the trails have very narrow stretches (2 ft or less) right near steep drop offs, sometimes where rocks are wet and slipping is a possibility. We chose not to proceed on one trail for this reason. My kids did love hiking through the tunnel/cave which is about 600ft in length and requires flashlights & (for adults) bending over at times to avoid hitting head. We also loved climbing the fire tower and seeing the views. All in all a great park!

By mamabear3111 |

You should allow yourself several hours to view falls and trails. We did drive to Hoffman Falls. I walked from parking space along road to viewing platform. You have to climb up 2 large rocks (boulders) to get to platform. It is very difficult to see falls from this platform as my one photo demonstrates. You need to follow trail all the way downhill to riverbed for good view. My other photo shows steps back to car from platform area. Even though this is listed as easier trail, it isn't for anyone with any mobility issues. I did look at inn which is in nice setting and has good views of Ohio River.

By Nan V |

This is a beautiful State Park. Clifty Falls is wonderful. They have a lodge in the park that you can eat there, but just driving through, bringing a picnic and enjoying all the natural beauty of this park is definitely a must to do.

By Albert B |

We enjoyed a weekend stay in river view. Yes- there are smoke stacks however, river view rooms are angled for a view of Madison, Ind. Rooms (bottom level) have patios. Level 200 room are actually on the first floor. Attractive and comfortable furnishings. Very nice for extended family (3 generation) stays.
Very clean!

By Tony Dorman |

Nice waterfall. It's a small hike to the bottom but worth the walk. The top can be viewed, the only problem is if you're from out of state, you have to pay a park entrance fee.

By Pamela B |

A beautiful afternoon for a short hike to the falls. It was a little late in the season for the leaves. Enjoyed some time visiting the Inn in the park- nice gift shops, great views out the windows, taxidermy animals from the area. Nice fireplaces to warm up by. Worth the stop.

By John E |

The park is worth the $9 entrance fee. We hiked most of the day on difficult (Trail 2 is miles on a rocky stream bed - with numerous water crossings) and moderate (Trails 5,4,3) trails. The 600' tunnel requires a flash light. Tunnel Falls were prettier than either Clifty Falls. The observation tower did not have interesting views. The nature center is interesting and had helpful volunteers.

By mightyoaks91 |

Wonderful trails, nice nature center, great waterfalls, close to Madison, IN. There is a very nice lodge here to stay out but I always camp.

By DuncanRipple |

Expected to spend the day hiking with family (grown children), knowing it would have quite a bit of elevation change, and be challenged a bit. But, found the trails to be a bit more challenging than anticipated. Glad we were somewhat prepared...also for heat and humidity. Trail 2, which is mostly in the creek bed, was most challenging. You have to pick your steps amongst the rocks. I really wanted to jump in the few pools of water it was so humid. We did find some young kids doing so. So, took a break at the nature center - thankful for the air conditioning. Then off to do trail 6 & 7. Also can be challenging. Just a great day.

The park has a nice Inn and a pool. Also, many picnic areas.

By tcsaw |

Absolutely loved this Park. We hiked every trail we could that day except trail 2 which we attempted but it is much more rugged and mainly along the river. We lost the trail part way through and turned back to finish the loop and rest of the trails. I'll be visiting again someday with my family.

By Thom P |

Weekend getaway with some hiking and dining in Madison. We stayed at the Inn in the park. Very fun trip. Highly recommend it for a quick get away

By Iheartindy |

To me- this is a must in Madison. I love hiking (recreational) and waterfalls, even if they are small. We did the “Four Falls Challenge,” which was not real hard, but not real easy either. It’s two separate trails and it took us about 2 hours. We hiked it with just a water bottle in hand and in our tennis shoes. No problems. Definitely go through the Tunnel. We went through with just our phone flashlights.

By Eric T |

Since the weather was going to be perfect, we decided at the last minute to head down to Clifty Falls. It's a beautiful park. We couldn't believe how nice the campground was. While on the trails, they weren't marked very well in some places (and the map didn't help much) but it allowed us to see really cool things we wouldn't have otherwise. The trails all led back to the same place anyway, so it worked out. We are excited to come back here. This is a new favorite!

By Marcia G |

This loop was perfect for our 2 and 5 year old grandsons. Beautiful views but safe enough for little guys who like to run around and climb.

By E B |

Dept of Natural Resources staff were very helpful with info when we arrived. Breathtaking scenery on the trails and roads through the park, great hort walk on Trail 10. Trails are rated for difficulty and length one way is listed in the brochure. We went back for the pool...it was amazing, had a water slide, diving area, graduated depth access area, perfect for families with little ones, and a general area for everyone. Well managed with lifeguards on duty. $3/pp entry fee in addition to park entry fee. There were scenic outlook areas with parking and info posted about each, also picnic areas and a modern Inn with many guest rooms.
Highly recommend!!!

By granof03 |

Well maintained park. We camped here and enjoyed some hiking. Some of the trails can be very challenging. Trails 3, 5 and 7 are good trails for short hikes that have nice views of the falls. A section of trail 7 is paved and ADA accessible to Clifty Falls overlook. We did not get to check out the tunnel as it was flooded. We saw deer, wild turkeys and bunnies. We had a pull through site and it was not private so if you want some privacy pick a site that backs up to the woods. The showers were barely luke warm. Nice nature center and trail 1 by it takes you a lookout that has a nice view of the Ohio River. Looking forward to visiting this park again.

By Climber81954 |

We enjoyed hiking some of the trails at Clifty Falls State Park. There are a number to choose from which made it nice. We also enjoyed eating at the lodge then sitting in rocking chairs taking in the view.

If you have never been here you must at least go once and I promise you will return. Absolutely beautiful view and fine dining as well at their Clifty Inn.

We went camping over Memorial Weekend, and were quite impressed with how quiet the campground was! What a pleasant family camping experience it was! The restrooms were well supplied and kept clean. A raccoon visited our campsite one night, and we saw some deer within the campgrounds. The sites have nice fire rings, and a picnic table. Ice and firewood is available for sale. Everyone at the gates were all very friendly and informative. The swimming pool has a nice slide that even the younger kids can enjoy, but must be with an adult. Pool was not too crowded, and it is only $3 for admission. The trails were not in the best of shape, due to all the rain, so didn't take advantage of many of them. Plus, the heat and humidity was a big factor that weekend, too. We visited the nature center, and it had a lot of interesting animals. They have an Inn, if you don't want to camp there. A bit on the pricey side, but it looked like a very nice place to stay. They had a nice gift shop, too. Very nice state park. Would love to camp here again.

By Tantima |

Lots of trail to hike on. Many areas suitable for biking just have to make sure to enter on the North side of the park. Trail to the water fall is relatively hard. Nice facility and if you want a good breakfast, Clifty Inn, located in the park, offers you a nice buffet breakfast on the weekend.

By Heidi_Lynn99 |

We made this a planned stop on family vacation while passing through the area. Lovely park, but no waterfalls to be seen, as the area had been without rain, and all 4 of the named falls, as well as (apparently) 18 other smaller falls are all seasonal. We did some hiking nonetheless, taking Trail 5 to an old man-made tunnel that was abandoned before completion. You are able to go into the tunnel during part of the year (it's closed during the winter months to protect hibernating bats), but one of my kids chickened out, so it was a no go for us. The trail was listed as .875 miles and rugged, and has a very steep staircase (downhill) at its start at Lilly Memorial. My kids (ages 10 and 8) tackled the trail just fine, but take note that there are multiple places that have a straight drop off on one side, and there are no handrails or fences. The majority of the trail is narrow.

Staff was minimal, but pleasant. When entering the park, I asked for a park map and was told by the ranger that he'd been out of them for a couple days, but nobody had replenished them. (Uh, okay...) He did tell us we could find one at Clifty Inn, which we did, along with some very clean bathrooms in the lobby.

Overall, a very nice park, and only a handful of people around when we were there (late afternoon on a Wednesday). Look for deer, as we did spot a young deer along the road near the entrance. We all agreed we'd like to go back when the falls are flowing.

By culinairian1964 |

This is a very special place within a very special place. The trails can be easy or challenging and take you past vast nature reserves, beautiful waterfalls and abundant wildlife. After your hike you are a close distance to Historic Madison’s Main Street which is chock full of wonderful shops including Blush women’s boutique, Wow! What A Find - a great resale designer furniture store with antiques and great home decor, Dittos - all sorts of accessories, Fountain Alley Soaps and many art galleries. In addition there are some nice restaurants with one more we hear is opening soon!

By watersma |

The park was great, very pretty. Stayed at the Inn overnight, the service was fast and friendly. Down side the air conditioning was not working so it was a little hot in the room but we received a discount at check out which made it worth while. I Would recommed anyone to stay

By Itinerant_Foodies |

It had snowed a few days previous to our visit and the temperature was in the low 20's but we went anyway and had a great time. The waterfalls were still running and with only one or two other cars seen the entire time we were there, we had the run of the place. In addition to the waterfalls, there were quite a few very large red headed woodpeckers that were only a bit shy so we got great pictures of them as well. The staff was great and helpful when we arrived. The trails were relatively clean of snow so even going down stairways to to the waterfalls was not overly treacherous. We'll have to return in the spring.

By Brooke W |

Good trails with lots of steps and rocks to climb, but the views are worth it. Nice picnic and play areas too!

By Michelle A. |

We were given a map with information about the park that was helpful. The grounds were lovely, the roadway through the park was wide and a fun drive, and the trails were fairly wide also. There are guides explaining the rock formations, and interesting facts about the park and local area. There are nice little spots for pictures too.

By Wanda R |

When we picked up our trail map I was instantly disappointed. There's something about the word Rugged in trail descriptions that is discouraging. However my hubby figured out how we could see Clifty Falls and Tunnel Falls so I am passing these on. To view Tunnel Falls park your car at the parking lot where Trail 5 ends. Take the steps from the parking lot to the falls. After you view the falls if you walk just a little further down the trail you can get a different falls view. Return the same way you entered the trail. To view Clifty Falls and Little Clifty Falls drive to the parking lot near the Playfield at the park's north entrance. Walk towards the bathroom building. The trail to the upper view of Clifty Falls is to the left of the bathrooms. To access the mid level view descend the staircase from the upper view of the falls. This trail is part of Trail 7 and is very manageable both through stairs and a boardwalk which takes you to the middle viewpoint. To view Little Clifty Falls continue on Trail 7 to Cake Rock Point. Continue to next staircase and descend to view top of Little Clifty Falls. You can then return the same way you came in from the parking lot. I hope this has been helpful. This allowed us to view the falls which were very pretty. The park is extremely clean which is quite impressive as I didn't see one trash can anywhere. The roads appear to be recently asphalted and were in excellent condition. We did see a couple of deer while in the park. We were here the week before Easter. The red bud was in bloom. The other trees were just starting to bud. Beautiful. For my reviews on the Inn and Restaurant please go to those sites.

A state park with great hiking trails and views of four different waterfalls. Although I haven't yet visited all of the Indiana state park, this one os my favorite thus far. Plenty of hiking that takes you up and down the cliffs and you get to see the man made cave. Tons of fun!

By Kelly F |

Unbelievable how big this park is! Very well kept and maintained. No litter blowing around and lots of trails to explore that are well marked. Picnic areas with grills throughout the park.

By annemilliron |

Park is beautiful. Lots of trails. The lodge was a little disappointing. Pool water was awful cold. Hot tub nice, but only 2 allowed in at a time. Room average. A little pricey for what you get. And charging $9 at the gate to enter the park was odd. The entrance that we needed for our convenience was closed. Had to take the long way to the historic district.

We absolutely adore Clifty Falls State Park. Our family has stayed in the Inn as well as camped here and love it every time. The trails are gorgeous and the hospitality is wonderful! It’s located just down the road from even more fun, restaurants, and shops in downtown Madison. You just HAVE to make a trip in the fall... so stunning and the town has so many fun events (for adults and kiddos alike).

By Momoftwoboysinohio |

Over all great weekend. Campgroud grass needed to be cut very high. The restroom shower water was cold all the time, a one point they decided to clean the restroom at 9am very disappointed in that. Our camp site had no table. Ask one of the workers at the gate house of the Campgroud about a trail and they had no clue what I was talking about very disappointing
Hiking trails very well maintained with all the rain.

We love going to the State Parks, this one did not disappoint. We had a great stay at the Inn, and really enjoyed the trails.

By 812RW |

Clifty Falls State Park offers many trails ranging from easy to difficult. Many nice shelter houses for family outings and events. A nice restaurant and a nice looking hotel, but living nearby I have not stayed in the hotel.

By Pasoporaqui |

Yes, there are some beautiful waterfalls in Indiana. We went in the winter, but it’s just as gorgeous as the summer. It’s just different. There were very few people there which made it even more enjoyable.

By Renee M |

We stayed overnight for a girls' trip. The park is beautiful with wonderful views of the river. There are many trails, even one that is accessible and overlooks a beautiful falls. The rooms were roomy and nice, although not luxurious. After all, why would you want to stay in the room when there is so much to do?! The breakfast buffet was good and reasonably priced. Service was not great, but you don't need a lot of service for a buffet. There is a nice game room and the gift shop has lots of reasonable, interesting items.

By 2 Up Cruiser |

The property here is absolutely gorgeous and it appears that the trails are pretty good. My wife and I didn’t go on the trails due to me having bad feet. We are very disappointed with the falls. They are very narrow and when we were there, they were barely a trickle.

By Alleah A |

We loved this park, there are so many trails and beautiful views. We only had about 2 hours to explore but could have easily spent the whole weekend. Trail 2 goes through the actual river bed so good ankle support shoes are pretty important. You can take this all the way up to Clifty Falls or break off to other trails. Because of time we split off and walked up the Hoffman creek bed. There are trails along the side but most of it is climbing over and under rocks, limbs, etc. about half way up there’s a small waterfall which was a nice place to take a break. Trail 7 also takes you to Clifty but you don’t have to do the whole trail to see them. Additionally on this trail their are a lot of board walks and stairs vs free trails. If you have time after your visit, check out “Goat Milk Stuff” about 25 minutes away. You can feed and play with baby goats- check out the review.

First visit to the park. Trails were well maintained and challenging in a good way, but I found them hard to navigate with the map. I'm sure it would be easier with more visits. I saw an inn with restaurant, although we did not eat. The pool wasn't open yet but looked very nice. I will return to see the rest of the falls. We did hike with our dog. Leashed dogs are allowed. If you do plan to hike, there are many rocks, elevation changes and steps.

By Candy M |

Clifty Falls offers a place to getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It offers the rugged beauty of the creek and canyon, numerous hiking trails ranging from easy to very rugged, and a series of four waterfalls overlooking the Ohio River. If you're not a hiker, you can drive the winding roads throughout the park and stop to appreciate the scenic views. If you want to see the waterfalls at their best, plan your visit in the spring or the winter.

By Bradley M |

Just steps from downtown Madison IN this park is like stepping into the wilds. Featuring four beautifully waterfalls which you can walk down to. There is a fee per vehicle but the park is more than worth the cost. Get the skinny on the various trails from the Indiana State Parks website. We hiked trail 7 to see the big and little cliffty falls. Only trail 2 will get you to the base of the falls. The park has a public pool and plenty of camping as well as a lodge and restaurant. Trust me - if you hike you could easily spend all day here.

By robinreed1987 |

We went here as a stop on the way south. We saw a couple falls which were beautiful. They had one fall which could be seen without to much walking which was appreciated because someone in my family has mobility issues. However the rest of the park requires a lot of walking

By deedeeh34 |

Clifty Falls State Park has many trails. The one to the main waterfall is easily accessible. The nature center is fun for kids & adults alike. The Inn has a nice restaurant & the biscuits & apple butter are delicious

By Kathy A |

Wonderful park. The Inn is cozy and what you think of as a state park. Wonderful view of the river, great hiking.

By Tracee G |

We stayed here at the inn the room was nice and spacious (we had a park side suite) would have preferred a river view but they were all booked. Nice lodge with what you'd expect at a state park. We enjoyed seeing the falls which were easy to see with short walks, lots of stairs but not long rugged paths. We checked out the campground but was not impressed, won't be taking the camper there. The lots were too close and in the wide open not many trees. Beautiful views of the river but the power plant kinda took away from the nature experience.

By Cindy B |

We really enjoyed this park. There is a 7$ gate fee for Indiana residence, and 9$ for non resident. NBD, most state parks have entrance fees. The rugged hikes were not really rugged at all, lots of stairs, but the views worth the steps. Cant wait to come back in the spring when the waterfalls are flowing better.

By Stelz1 |

We spent time at the nature center (very nice), walked to the tower, and to the falls. Wasn't expecting much water to be flowing, but we were pleasantly surprised. We didn't have time for any of the other trails. Another day!

By Jaime Allgeier |

The sites are nice but they do not enforce the speed limit and the hosts are not friendly as well as people at the gate. We complained about a car tailgating because we were doing the 15 mph speed limit and the people at the gate did nothing. DNR rides around the camp ground speeding when it is passed 15 mph. This park is a joke when it comes to rules. We camped by the host and that was a joke as he never returned a wave. I would not came here again. I am done with rude people that do not follow the rules. The state needs to reevaluate this park and the people taking care of it.

By Keith M |

Nice state park for hiking. Stayed the day and did a lot of hiking. The park does cost to get in. It was 9 dollars for out of state. Only problem we went when there has not been rain so the falls were dried up or the falls were small.

By Joshua B |

My family recently visited Clifty Falls State Park. The park is very clean and well up kept. We hiked several of the trails and really had a good time. Definitely enjoyed our time and can’t wait to go back!!

By Matt M |

Our family made its first trip to Clifty Falls. What a beautiful setting hidden in the SE corner of Indiana. The hiking provided a day full of exercise. Most of the trails are some category of rugged. For a nice challenge, take Trail 8 and then hike the creek bed (Trail 2) back toward the trail head. The park is pet friendly. The only disappointment was the lack of rain since late summer which resulted in bland colors in the trees and the waterfalls being trickles. The observation tower provides a beautiful look at the river but unfortunately a coal plant is in between. The park offers a lodge if you want to stay overnight (we did not use this). There are observation decks for each of the falls, including a bridge across the top one of the them. It is a short walk from the parking lots to the decks. There is also a tunnel you can walk completely through. You will want a flashlight or your phone for that walk. There are several picnic areas and some spacious flat areas. It would be easy to spend the whole day there.

By Jonathan T |

One of Indiana's top state parks, we find ourselves amazed that landscapes like this can be found in Indiana. We would rank this one along with Turkey Run and Brown County as the must-do parks. Almost every trail provides opportunities to see waterfalls from 60-over 80 feet in height and canyons. Even in the fall water was still cascading on each and of course fall allows for lots of color to be seen. Our favorite trails are 5, 6, 7, and 8 and #2 when it is dry enough to traverse.

On our most recent trip, we decided to eat at the lodge for lunch and found the service friendly and food quite good. And the views of the Ohio River from the dining room are really lovely.

By robkat1828 |

There is so much beautiful scenery to see here , the plants and animals . The way this park was formed and the hills and valleys . Then there is the many waterfalls and a tunnel . The Inn is on a hill overlooking the Ohio river ,and many other overlooks to see all the beauty of this park.

By Joshua C |

I love this park the trails are beautiful. Around every turn is a new beautiful waterfall. This is a great place to hike at all levels. The pool is very nice but not heated.

By LMA4444 |

We stayed just one Thursday night at the historic Lodge. Clean, comfortable, affordable.
We hiked some, but not too much water was running in the falls.

Breakfast in the huge dining room was filling and tasty.

I would like to come back sometime and camp; we would have enjoyed a campfire and a swim in the lovely pool.

By dc8Louisville |

We camped out for two days, the campground was very nice except for the showers, while they were clean there was low water pressure and the shower head was only about 4 feet tall

By lynn o |

Great falls and hiking trails. Trails are well marked. Stairs in good shape. Rough trails are marked. Some trails are moderate and easy. Defiantly try them out.

By da120757 |

Not sure that I liked having to pay a nine dollar fee to get in the park or any park in Indiana but I know they have to keep up the maintenance for their guests. The falls were flowing while we were there but we did not take the trails maybe someday

By Joshua B |

We spent the weekend camping and hiking at the park. First off the hiking was spectacular if you like rugged terrain! We have 3 very active boys and they loved the challenge of climbing, jumping, and scaling the steep trails in and out of the gorge and the riverbed at the bottom. Granted we haven't hardly had any rain the last couple of months so the falls were not very awe inspiring with the lack of water, but I could imagine it is something to behold when water is raging through the not 1 but 4 sizable falls in the park. The whole park is beautiful from one end to the other.

The only reason it didn't get a 5 start from me is the campground. 1) There is no camp store for basic supplies. Granted there are any number of big stores within a 20 min drive, but would be nice to hit up the camp store for basics and small souvenirs. 2) the campground itself had relatively few sites compared to most state parks we have camped which would explain why we always have had trouble finding a spot. 3) The bath houses while nice were not very accessible without hiking through rather tall often damp grass this time of the year. The sites were large and relatively leveled and we still enjoyed our stay immensely.

Overall we loved this park, but word of caution, most of the hiking isn't for the faint of heart, it was real work, but we very much enjoyed it.

By Dufus77 |

Wife and I stayed in the Inn. We enjoyed the park and it’s many hiking trails. We walked part or all of every trail. Inn was clean and comfortable. The dining room offered great food

By PaRlehr |

It rained the 2 days we were there and didn't get to hike the trails. However, as we we leaving, we stopped to see the 4 waterfalls which are located near parking areas. The rains had added fuel to the falls...they were awesome. We'll have to come back on a sunny day.

By katherinemV9931JD |

Personal at hotel suggested we spend time at the state park. So glad that we were in town for 3 days..

By ro13 |

This park was well labeled for trails and sight seeing spots. They also have a nice gift shop and an inn you can stay at overnight. We did not stay overnight but visited the gift shop and it was very nice. Very well kept up park.

By John P |

We came up to Madison to visit family here. We love hiking and went on 4 trails. The trails were very well kept and the falls were beautiful. I recommend going on the trail with the tower it is awesome my kids loved it. We took our kids to the pool one day and it was one of the best pools I have been to. The pool was very clean and they let you borrow lifejackets for the little kids. The lifeguards were very attentive and helpful. The lifeguards were great with the kids. They had tadpoles in a cooler and were talking to the kids about the tadpoles. I have never been to a pool with tadpoles, the kids thought it was so neat.

By Ann M |

It’s a great park but tons better when there has been a lot of rain. The waterfalls add to its beauty!

By Kati P |

Very nice state park. 4 stars because the “falls” are really not that exciting. Also, one trail was closed that was on the way to one of the falls, but it wasn’t marked as closed so we had to turn around. Cake rock is really cool, and there’s a tower that has an amazing view of the Ohio.

By donnadonchev |

We visited the state park as a part of a road trip. Getting to the falls was an easy hike. Very beautiful with the typical for Illinois and Indiana scenery.

By tsheetz |

We had a wonderful time walking to the falls. The views were spectacular! We hope to come back when it is a little warmer but we enjoyed the Fall colors.

By Christina C |

This park was really nice with the many beautiful waterfalls and comfortable hiking trails. Don't forget your water in the summer!

By Lynne F |

This park has some rather challenging hiking trails that aren't always well-marked -- we got lost and ended up hiking much further than intended which was fine except we didn't have enough water for the extra time and effort. (I would recommend downloading a good trail app to mitigate that -- which is what we did at the time to find our way back to the car.) The falls are modest but quite pretty and make for good stopping points and photo ops. A warmish day in April is an excellent time to go because the green is there but the undergrowth and insects are not in full force yet. There are other hikers on the trails but it's not crowded. Because of the rapid elevation changes of a few hundred feet, some of the trails are more challenging -- but that is also what makes the park so especially lovely.

By Jerome H |

My wife has always wanted to go French Flirty Falls, so We got a balcony room facing the river, we drove over 3 hrs to get there, we got an extra night there, we got into our room it was nice but we've stayed at other State Park Inns, and they were more rustic than the Inn there, also once we got to our room we walked out to the balcony, and saw that there was a big power plant, blocked most of the view of the river, and that you could hear it. We enjoyed our stay there, but We spent more time in Madison, than we did at the park,, since about all you could see was the power plant, who ever thought that putting a power plant that close to a State park, well I did go see some of the park while we were there, but we enjoyed ourselves more in town, and if we do go back, we'll get a hotel room in Madison.

By SaltLife03 |

We travel about an hour to make the trip to Clifty falls. Our 3 girls and miniature dachshund love walking the trails. It's always best after a good rain, but the trails are muddy. We like to pack lunch and make a day of it. Keep in mind the bathrooms at the north entrance are closed thru the winter season (end of March and still closed)

By Sarah K |

There are so many lovely trails and views. This is a great park to hike. The pool is also our favorite in the summer. It's a great pool for little ones.

By Beachcomb_33 |

Imagine flipping through a magazine and you come across a beautiful waterfall with green foliage all around.....that was my reason for wanting to visit. However the real thing didn't hold up and yes I understand that one must take in the amount of rain in the days preceding but regardless I was not impressed. Due to tree growth the majority of the falls were hidden and could not be seen. I understand that happens so maybe in the early Spring would be better before things start to grow and take over. However...starting out bring water! What was intended to be a short trail hike turned into hrs. The trails are not marked very well at all. I don't know how many people we passed that were lost or though they were on one trail when they were on another. Just confusion all around among many. The trails can be rough and tiring so be sure your physically able before heading out. There are steep steps and climbs. If your looking for adventure this maybe your place, Have Fun!

By JCKimmer |

We love this place! Plenty of level and shaded camping spots close to the bath house. It’s become our favorite spot to spend time with friends. There’s a fun little Nature Center that kids enjoy. And a great variety of trails. Trust the map when it says “Rugged” or “Very Rugged.” Enjoy finding fossils on Trail 2! If you’re hiking, plan on 2-4 hours. And definitely keep a map with you.

By Robyn S |

Our trip there was only long enough to drive through this HUGE park, yet the beauty and variety of trails was apparent. Many lookout spots and trail markers revealed miles of trails. A quaint nature center with live animals and bird-feeding station added value. They boast a large inn and a great swimming pool in the summer. We'll be looking into camping there soon! :-)

By Nicole P |

This park is wonderful, lots of trails with all levels of difficulty. My kids (7 &12) loved being in nature, navigating the trails, and seeing Little and Big Clifty Falls. There is a tower located close to the Inn with a wonderful view once you climb up.

By Larry R |

Clifty Falls has a great convention meeting area overlooking the river. Great food for lunch. Nice place for a group meeting with accommodations for staying overnight. The park is large nice with water falls

By Scott R |

There’s so much to do here! A lot of trails, waterfalls, views of the Ohio River, a pool, camping, great restaurant and hotel. A must visit!

By David E |

Only problem was that the water heater for the pool was not working. but they gave us a discount. It was a long weekend so lots of kids had come to stay and use the pool.

By Cyndy K |

We had a wonderful time hiking ALL of the trails. However because it's been very, very dry, there were no "falls" to speak of - just trickles of water. All the trails are 90% shaded EXCEPT for trail #9 - out in the open. Maybe it's the time of year were were here (last week of Sept.), but they could use more port a pots all through the park. But my biggest question is WHY do they charge you to get into a STATE park? AND if you are NOT from IN., you have to pay $2.00 more being out of state. Guess they don't want out of state people in their parks? Come to OHIO - ALL of our STATE parks are FREEEEEEE!!!!!

By Tom D |

Clifty Falls is a great place to hike and enjoy nature. The Inn is clean and comfortable but nothing special, if fact, a bit pricey for what you get. Heating system is noisy and the showers in the older part of the building are hard to regulat

By campfield |

We have camped here often, It was wonderful every time. We have eaten at the lodge, food and service was good. We have also went to ride bikes, or just have a picnic. The park is beautiful.

By TimfromMadison |

great place to hike and spend an afternoon
trails vary from easy to difficult
wildlife everywhere
fall colors great

By FindBeautyInNature |

Must not have had enough rain in the area lately because the falls were just little drips, so that was disappointing, but enjoyed the hiking. Hiked trail 5 down to the creek bed and then trail 2 to big clifty. Lots of loose rock, some rugged areas. Hiked several other smaller trails throughout the park. Went through the tunnel. Disappointed in the lack of wildlife, except for squirrels and chipmunks. But I did see several woodpeckers, which was cool.

By Stacey M |

Clifty falls does have beautiful scenery and an amazing pool. The only thing I can really say is that the prices are a bit exorbitant for general admission and for season passes with is for only half a year since in the cooler months they don't charge admission.

By Carol49426 |

The park is beautiful with winding roads up and around a small canyon. The trails are well marked. They have lots of stairs and hilly, somewhat rocky, areas but are not particularly challenging. The waterfalls were, for us, a bit underwhelming. The streams were not very full leading to a mere trickle of water in one case. Overall, though, it was worthwhile.

By K F |

My wife and I went down on a Monday and it felt like we had the place to ourselves. The trails are well marked and the views of the waterfalls are outstanding.

By Wheels282 |

The inn is very modern and nice. We had a river view room and we spent a lot of time watching the barges or the street traffic in downtown Madison all from out room. The view at night is really nice. We try to get walking exercise every day. I was able to get over 11,000 steps in the park one day. We walked trail 9 to the pool and back. It was kind of muddy, so we walked on the road in the park. We drove to tunnel falls and walked trail 5 to see the falls. Trail 5 is very rugged and needs repairs so after about a mile we turned around and went to big and little clifty falls up by the North gate. We walked some of trail 7 and it is really neat.; There is a big parking lot up by the North gate. The restaurant at the Inn has really good prices and great views of the Ohio river. If you want to see wildlife like deer, drive around the park at dusk. They were not charging admission to the park when we were here.

By AworldAwayFromHome |

My husband, 5 year old daughter and I hiked trail 7 from Lookout Point up to the parking lot by Clifty Falls at the north end of the park. It was a perfect length hike (about 1.25 miles) for all of us and starting where we did it put the bathroom and playground right in the middle of the hike- a perfect break for our daughter. The terrain is moderately rugged (as labeled on the map). It was fall but even though most foliage remained on the trees we could see the falls well. They were fairly small but I guess we hadn't had a lot of rain recently. There were a few places I was nervous for my daughter because of the steep edge along the trail but we just held her hand in these places and we all did fine. The playground was simple but fun for her. We also hiked down to Tunnel Falls from the parking lot at the North end of trail 5. It's a short hike to see the fall then re-trace back to the parking lot. It is a bout 100 stairs down though so avoid if you cannot handle stairs. (Trail 7 has a decent amount of stairs too). We stopped in the Clifty Falls Inn to look for postcards in their gift shop. They did not have what we were looking for but it did have a nice selection of other things. The view from the Inn is pretty if you ignore the power plant nearby. The staff was friendly and helpful. Our daughter fell off a chair while enjoying the river view and a staff member at the front desk happily got her a bag of ice and asked to be sure she was ok. We would go back to the park as long as it wasn't rainy as the trails might be a bit too slick.

By John Ozzy Williams |

A lot of the services were limited due to Covid 19. Overall, staff was very friendly and place was clean.

By Jack H |

Very pretty state park on the Ohio River. Hiked to two water falls which were running well due to lots of recent rain. Went on a Tues with ideal sunny and 70 degree weather, yet there were few people in the park, probably due days of heavy rains recently.

By rjcvg |

We stayed at the campground and was not a bad park. No water hookups however. You have to bring in water on your camper or fill your tank on the property. Kind of a pain. Have to watch your usage. Electricity went out 3 times in three days. It was off for 5 hours one time. Pathetic.
They charge $9 for out of state guest on top of the campground fees.
The $9 however is a onetime fee if you are camping.
The park has many hiking trails. More hard than easy. There looks to be a nice lodge in the park. The Clifty Falls Inn.
There is a pretty nice pool in the park. $3 per person.

By Jo M |

We had such a nice time hiking here. The waterfalls were beautiful! We went through the tunnel, which was really neat. We also climbed the fire tower and the view from the top was amazing!

By Kari P |

We camped here in the middle of a week in June. I think that's the only thing that saved us. The lack of people. Clifty Falls is a beautiful park. We were able to switch our campsite when we got there because our was short and in FULL sun! Many are. We liked our 2nd pick much better and the gatehouse attendant was very nice about switching. The pool is spectacular, $3 per person. One thing that irritates me about camping at Indiana state parks is that you have to pay the entrance fee even when you camp. It seems like they should waive that. And we had 2 vehicles so we paid $14 to get in. We enjoyed the hikes. We ate breakfast in the inn one morning ($15 for buffet, yikes). It was good. Beautiful view of the Ohio River and Madison from the Inn. I read a couple reviews and there seems to be a consensus for the campground. THE BATHROOMS REALLY NEED HELP! The whole push button water thing was downright ridiculous and so annoying. Overall we enjoyed our stay and being there in the middle of the week made it even more enjoyable as we aren't really people persons! We would probably return.

By GWK |

Stayed a couple days at the inn and hiked the park. Great experience, nice staff. Visited in February. Might come back in the summer. Not much happening in Madison in the winter.

By alexysabroad |

My wife and I took a day trip with our dogs last month. The admission was free that day (Monday), so that was a bonus! We saw plenty of beautiful waterfalls and even ventured down to the creek. The creek was one of our favorite parts of the park because of how quiet and peaceful it was. There was a small swimming hole, rocks to climb on, and lots of little waterfalls. The trek to the creek was a bit rugged, considering how steep it was, but we made it down there...with our dogs! We saw all four major waterfalls, hiked almost every trail, and made it down to the creek in just one afternoon, so I'd recommend seeing everything! One of Indiana's finest state parks, if not the finest!

By Tina C |

The beauty is so worth the easy hike to the falls. If you want to get a good hike in there ill be a lot of steps you will need to take. The waterfalls is beautiful and can be seen easly by the pull off without any hiking involved. Beautiful pines everywhere as you drive through the lush florest.

By Joseph T |

Very quiet campground.

Both of our campsites were pull through and large enough to keep our trucks attached.

Enough tree coverage at our sites, clean but dated rest room facilities as are many State parks.

Plenty of trails for walking, nice for bicycle riding, plenty of open area's and dog friendly.

Close to Madison Indiana so always something to do in town. This was the weekend for the Madison Regatta so it was a vibrant and busy weekend.

Will definitely return to camp here.

By Workingindymom |

Clifty Falls offers a very nice array of day hikes suited for reasonably fit to very fit folks. We hiked on 3 different trails for a total of 2 1/2 hours of hiking with our 2 dogs on leashes. We plan on returning, perhaps in the fall, to tackle the longer hikes. Even though we hiked from 11-2:00 and it was in the mid-80's and humid, it was comfortable hiking through the forest as the trails were almost 100% shaded. Bring lots of water and lunch as the only place to eat in the park is at the lodge. The south entrance was also closed making it impractical to zip into Madison for lunch. Also, be prepared to pack out all your garbage: there are no garbage cans in the park.

By HNally |

......great space to enjoy the gifts from Mother Nature! Check out the Nature Center for activities and anything special that might be going on while you are there

This is an amazing place! If you have not been you need to go! I grew up going to this amazing and fabulous campground!!!

By debbyR700 |

The trails range from easy to challenging. Get a trail map, because you will need it to figure out where you are at the many trail intersections. The falls can be viewed from trail 7.

By George J |

We were there on a hot day. The trails were not marked properly, you could easily get lost. So with my experience in the woods, find the road and walk back to the car. Some places in the park was dangerous. DO NOT TAKE YOUR KIDS THERE!

By BoePHilroe |

We hiked to all of the falls. They are nice trails and well maintained. This is an excellent place for short hikes. They can be looped together for a longer experience. It is a terrific place to spend a day.

By rogersober |

Drove to the lodge through the park and enjoyed the wind on the ridges. The office entry was closed and confusing about entry payment.

By Mark W |

Excellent views. We went shortly after the winter snow so still had a lot of ice and mud to navigate. The biggest issue was navigating the maps and trail markers could have been clearer. Overall we were very pleased with our visit and look forward to coming back when the weather is better for more hiking.

By Gary B |

Beautiful Park! Unfortunately we couldn't see all of the falls. You have to hike to some. It was a very hot day, and we have some medical issues. Will definitely be back, and hopefully we can see all the falls.

By malia perkins |

It was good at first until i start getting stares because i was an african american it was very difficult to deal with , with the muggs and stares from staff and ect.

By brendabeit |

They have a beautiful lodge with a great restaurant. They have a look out tower over the Ohio river. They have a nice nature center, lots of picnic spots, beautiful scenery.

By CALewis |

I participated in the 5K walk through this park. It is beautiful. This fall has been very dry so Clifty falls was a mere trickle. Beautiful park.

First we walked trail 8 to the lower falls then took the rough path, cause we had 4 kids with us (ages 12 -5) we walked the road back to the area we started. When they say rough thats what it means. We were climbing over rocks, it was a little difficult for the children. After that walk we had a picnic lunch, this was nice excpet one thing - THERE SEEMS TO BE A SHORTAGE OF TRASH CANS. We looked at several picnic areas and there were grills but no trash cans at any we could find. We took our trash with us and by the end of the day in a warm car smelled quite lovely btw. After the picnic we decided to hike to the tunnel - yeah that was an experience with children too. They did end up liking the tunnel and we saw bats. However it was very muddy in the tunnel, one kid lost a shoe in a mud puddle so trying to find it was a flashlight was a little crazy but all was well. We had never walked that trail before. After this trail we went to the pool for an hour to cool off. This was nice -bigger kids spent all their time on the diving board. There needs to be a small water slide in the kiddle area. The 5 year old with us really wanted to do a slide but isnt the strongest swimmer yet and was scared to try the big white slide. A small one in the 1 or 2 foot area would be good for toddlers and preschool children.
Took the kids to the playground after the pool. It was nice and clean.
Overall it was a nice day. We spent $28 the whole day(the pool was $3 a person) and we were entertained the whole time.
Btw - WE DIDNT PAY TO GET INTO THE PARK - OUR LOCAL LIBRARY HAD A INDIANA STATE PARK PASS THAT WE BORROWED FOR FREE FOR 7 DAYS WHICH COVERS THE ENTRANCE FEE. So really if we didnt want to go swimming we could have had a nice day for free! See you again soon Clifty!

I was able to visit on a cloudy day, and unfortunately didn’t allow myself enough time to enjoy the hiking trails... most everything is accessible from the parking lots; however the view of Big Clifty Falls would have been much better from Trail #2 compared to what I saw from Trail #7. The Tunnel Falls were closed to protect hibernating bats (two thumbs up!)

If you visit the four falls by car, with very little traffic (a cloudy Friday afternoon in January, e.g.), I would allow around two hours; I wish I could report how much time is advisable for exploring the trails; alas, I needed to leave too soon.

I love to visit Clifty Falls in the spring. The redbud and dogwood trees are beautiful and the moist soil is great for wildflowers. Many trails are rugged, but there are level paths near the Inn.

By mpeacock_10 |

I really loved how many different areas there were to hike. They actually had 4 waterfalls inside this park. I hiked every area available. I even hiked the Tower which had a birds eye view of the river..

Snow's on the ground, but the sun's out. Grab the boots, hats, and gloves and enjoy the views at this beautiful state park. Deep ravines, limestone cliffs, and frozen water. Very few other visitors, except some deer. Day-long smile!

By balloonlady21 |

With all the rain we were able to walk and see the falls.Be sure to wear good walking shoes. Trails were muddy but so worth the walk to the falls.

By PK45238 |

The water falls are nice, but they've put stupid decking all over the trails and this makes it extremely treacherous if they are the least bit damp. The processed wood and fungus on these treated wood walkways is like walking on ice. Everyone in our family slipped and took falls-and not minor falls. Mine was down a flight of stairs. I have an excellent pair of hiking boots and even these were no match for these stairs. Both my feet went flying out from under me. I thought I broke my back it was so bad. I have been laid up for 3 days with extreme back pain. If you're going to put these stupid walkways in everywhere, you ought to maintain them or glue some sandy grit to them for safety.
Also, the town put these giant power plant towers right in front of the park. What an eyesore.

A beautiful place to hike, sit, and relax. Great trails and beautiful rivers to explore. The town of Madison is a great little spot for lunch.

Indiana state parks are excellent destinations for just an afternoon or an extended visit. Clifty Falls is home to the most beautiful scenery, great camping and the best hiking trails. The waterfalls in the canyon are incredible, there's an abundance of picnic areas and the Visitors' Center has much to see and learn about wildlife in the park. With two entrances, access is easy but the hills and valleys make traversing the park challenging at times.

By Bouffie |

More rugged hiking than we are used to in Pokagon State Park & Indiana Dunes. Similar to Turkey Run - so if you're looking for some challenges, here it is. Has been a fairly dry spring so the falls weren't especially full - but still enjoyed the setting. Spotted deer, turkeys, Pileated woodpeckers and a few other small animals. We like to hike early and late which generally increases your chances of seeing wildlife - and avoids the rush of people.
Grounds are well maintained and clean. Trails were well marked. Trails range from 3/4 mile to over 4 miles in length. We only had time for 6 of them - would like to go back and finish them. The Inn was an excellent place to stay and has been newly renovated.

There was little or no falls because of the lack of water. Very beautiful drive and scenes. Would recommend it

What an amazing spot this is with so many waterfalls in such a small park. A real jewel in the Indiana State Park system.

By Jessica S |

Came in from Cincinnati. Enjoyed the trails. Really enjoyed the tunnel but if you are going to do it bring a flashlight. Got there at 9 nature center did not open till ten. After hiking on a hot day if you want to swim at the pool you can pay $3. To swim all day. Wish we would have known.

By Lee T |

The park was so much larger than those that we are used to. it was clean and well kept. We were shocked at how much less crowded it was compared to other State Parks closer to us. We would definately return!

By tromba61 |

We drove up to the north side and hiked to see Big and Little Clifty Falls, which are pretty dried up now. Trails were challenging but doable for fit people in their 50s and early 60s.

By Cheryl S |

The Inn is updated and the river view rooms worth the extra money. Trails for hiking are numerous and there are trails for every skill level - many with views of the various falls. Both an outdoor and indoor pool are available (slight extra charge for outdoor pool). Hot tub is also included with the indoor pool. If you like camping then there are spots for either a tent or camper.

By Michael F |

We have been to Clifty Falls State Park several times and never fail to come away with new appreciation for the site. Trails are well maintained. Don't expect to see huge volumes of water cascading over the falls unless you come between December and April, but there is plenty to appreciate, including a deep canyon carved by Clifty Creek, historical structures created by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and a failed railroad building project evidence by stonework which remains more than 160 years after the effort was abandoned. The park provides a challenge for the dedicated hiker, along with proximity to population centers and a size which should not prove too daunting. Park maintenance is very good. We always have a great time here.

By Itinerant_Foodies |

Our second visit, this time camping for three nights so that we could explore the park and nearby town of Madison. The campground is good but quite open so it's easy to see all hundred-or-so campers nearly at the same time. Lucky for us we stayed through Sunday so the campground had mostly cleared out by the afternoon and was nice and peaceful. We had a spot (26) on the outside edge of the campground road which was good (and shady) but the spot had a severe slope to it making it difficult to level the RV and making some of the spot not very usable for sitting and relaxing. The hiking trails however, were quite nice and we explored several that led to various falls, which were running pretty well after a good rain the day before. Highly recommended if you're in the area.

By Boliermaker |

It rained two inches the night before we were here and the four waterfalls were really running big time. Just beautiful for this time of year. Great view of Clifty Falls with only about a 100 yard walk from parking lot that is wheel chair accessible. Other views take some stair climbing.

By kiagranny |

We had our Family get together there this year we were not disappointed. Lots of hiking trails with beautiful scenes in the park. Picnic areas were clean well maintained and we really enjoyed ourselves. This is a no brainer if you enjoy hiking and beautiful trees and gorgeous looks at the falls this is your place. If you are in the market do not be afraid to try the park for picnic and hike.

By teamsnardy |

Enjoyed the rugedness of the trails complete with the scenery of the creeks, falls and tunnel. Fairly well marked and well kept. We stayed at the Inn so cant review the campgrounds. Summer month leaves help disguise the bigger than life power plant nearby. Enjoy

By Nancy Y |

there is a beautiful lodge there but we over heard a lady say it was quite pricey. nice gift shop in the lodge. it's an ok place to go to see Clifty Falls but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it again

By DDHinthorn |

It is not a huge state park but it is well kept and a peaceful place. This is a great place for those that enjoy hiking! Numerous trails, waterfalls and great scenery!

By moosemom |

Well maintained, relatively new Inn. Park is pretty with good hiking trails. Opt for the river view rooms for the extra money; but all seem comfortable and updated. Dining room serves very good meals. River view from the patio and dining room is exceptional. Staff is friendly and helpful. If you are a history buff; Madison, Indiana, will be to your liking. Great river walk and many old homes of interest.

By travelqueeny1 |

Worth taking the time to visit here. We stayed about two hours. Visited the Clifty Inn and gift shop and walked Trail #1 to the Observation Tower overlooking the Ohio River. It wasn't the time of year to enjoy the four major waterfalls but if you love to hike this is a great place to visit.

By Ronald K |

Very nice State Park with 6 trails to go on. Some are ez and some are harder, but all are fun. The are very nice after a rain, can be slow after a dry spell.

By Melanie L |

Very beautiful park with many trails to choose from but only one that is easy. Worth the effort to hike to falls. Many shelters for picnics. Restaurant food just average.

By leatha77 |

Visited Clifty Falls with my husband and was pleasantly surprised. We are big state and national park fans and visit them where ever our work travels take us. It has a tower that you can climb to get an amazing view of the Ohio River and the much of the park. It has a few beautiful waterfalls and many trails to hike. I definitely will be back any time I am in town.

By njl1949 |

We did some hiking here recently, and enjoyed it very much. Most of the trails are rugged or very rugged, so good hiking shoes are necessary.

By shrngoss |

We kind of spur of the moment decided to get away for a couple days so we took advantage of the BOGO rooms at the Clifty Inn. Not much activity because of the weather but everything was very clean and comfortable. Because of the weather we couldn't do much outdoors. The restaurant was only available for to go items so that was kind of a bummer. We had taken breakfast food with us and there are plenty of good food options downtown. A really relaxing, laid back two day after a three hour trip from Indianapolis. The best road the whole trip were after we got in the park. Thank you DNR.

By melissa w |

All sites have a picnic table and fire ring. However, many of the picnic tables are very short which is fine as long as you have a small group or family. The fire rings are very nice and have a good grill grate. Bathrooms/showers were typical: moderately clean with luke cold water. Tent sites were decent (we were pleased with site 117). Some offer a little more privacy than others with brush growth and trees. RV sites offered less privacy but I was pleased with the separation between the tent and RV sections of the campground. The wood they sold was great and they also have ice for sale. The trails were crazy packed the second weekend in June so we didn't do much hiking (however, we've hiked the entire park trail system in the past and really enjoy it). The park is relatively flat so biking is a fun activity. They charge you to enter the park an additional 7-9$ even if you already reserved camping. A huge bonus is Madison, Indiana nearby (4.5 miles away) which has a couple of wineries (and restaurants) and you can also walk along the Ohio River. Overall, I would tent camp here again.

By Blackhawk42Actual |

This Park has some nice trails that range from short to several Hours. There are nice areas for picnicking with well maintained playgrounds. There is a pool with lifeguards that costs $3. Good for a day outing.

By gazooby |

This has been on my to-do list forever, and I am glad we finally made it. The waterfalls are lovely. There are about a dozen hiking options in a fairly compact area. That means you can do more than one trail in a day. But be forewarned that some of these are possibly the steepest trails in the state, meaning you will make up in effort what you don't accomplish in distance. For my spouse and I, who are solid amateur hikers with ageing knees, we created a loop of Trails 7>6>2>8 which allowed us to do a loop rather than in-an-out, and park just once at the North Lot. It took us on both sides of the canyon, past multiple falls, and was lots of fun. HELPFUL TIP: Go to the Nature Center if you need help picking a trail. The rangers there knew the terrain. The receptionists at the Clifty Inn do not know the trails. GENERAL PLEA: Please wear your masks when you are within six feet of others on the trail (basically means you should pop the mask on whenever you pass somebody!!).

By Ldrake97 |

My husband and I visited the park with another couple and hiked several trails in the park. It was a great way to spend the morning! We hiked to several beautiful water falls and even went through a 600 ft cave! The trails are very nicely kept and have lots of stairs where needed as well as well placed look outs and bridges. The views are gorgeous especially after a good rain. The foliage was so green. We went on a perfect spring morning, cool crisp air about 65-70 degrees. We want to come back for a weekend with our teenage kids who would love this place!

By Sevencee |

Nice park, many trails, I would have liked to see the trails better marked so one knows what trail he is on. Falls were running very little in July so they were not real impressive to see. Very warm, muggy and humid for hiking in July. I am sure fall would be very scenic and much nicer temperatures.

By Stanley W |

We just moved to Madison and had not driven around the state park yet so we went through there on our way to Hilltop. It was about lunch time and we stopped and had soup and salad. Everything was spotless and food was fresh. A good selection with two soups. A great view of the Ohio river.

By kimmieguy |

This park is gorgeous and very peaceful. The trails we hiked were relatively easy but provided breathtaking views of two of the falls. We will be back.

By Maryjane10893 |

We stayed in Madison for the night so the next morning we drove through this park. No admission this time of year. We stopped at a few of the trail/view points and took some pretty pictures.

By Dave M |

I have visited Clifty several times and always love going back. Lot's of hiking trails and scenery any time of the year.

By Adam N |

Super cool park with a few nice hikes and trails. The ranger we talk to was super helpful. It is $9 for an out of state vehicle. Lots of small but nice waterfalls

By Elaine T |

Beautiful park with a beautiful inn. We camp, but was not camping this weekend. We were just visiting. Drove around, went in the inn, looked at the campsites. Most are flat, but a little crowded.

By Kathy L |

Your covid destination for social distancing in southern Indiana. Challenging hiking trails to waterfalls, tunnels that you can walk thru and rugged scenery. The state park has implemented all the proper precautions at the Inn, campgrounds etc

By BKINDToday |

We chose the rugged trail and it was just that! Steep hills, valleys, narrow trails, rocks, crossing over brooks and steams, it had it all! You can also choose a easy or moderate path if you prefer. At the top of the park you will see the falls and mini falls and the views along the way are really pretty. I want to go back in the fall as I’m sure it would be breathtaking!! There are several places to park so you can pick up trails at different points in the park depending on how far you want to hike. Plenty of places the picnics with pavilions if you have that need as well.

By Beverly L |

Had a very enjoyable stay at the park. Was concerned that the trails would be too rugged for us. There were lookouts we could drive to. Paths to Clifty Falls, Hoffman Falls and lookout tower were ok for even an older person. Even though many trails are rugged, park could be enjoyed by older or disabled people.
Nature Center was small but nice. Nice inside area to watch wildlife and birds feed. Staff knowledgeable and friendly. Some children activities also.
Plenty of picnic tables and play equipment. Outside pool but we didn’t visit. Campground also.

By Vicki F |

Clifty Falls State Park is amazing! However, staying at the Inn is another story. The room was ok, but the dining there is horrible. Years ago we dined there for breakfast and it was not fit to eat. My husband ordered eggs over easy, they came out burnt to a crisp. This trip July '25 was no different. Our waitress acted like she didn't care 2 flips if she waited on us or not. My husband ordered sweet tea, she came out with it and said you might want to taste it, I think the girl in the back gave you unsweet tea. Yep, unsweet tea. I tried to order something off the menu, she came back, and she said they were out of the cauliflower tacos; they sell out fast. Really? My thoughts they didn't want to fix them. Ordered plain mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, and coleslaw. Plate came out with gravy on the potatoes. The food was cold, so she reheated it. We were to get rolls with our dinner, nope, no rolls. So, by this time we just gave up.
Rate my experience: A big fat 0. Hire people that care and get new cooks!

By Mark R |

If you want to see the waterfalls, make sure you go there while it is pouring down raining, otherwise, not much water. The falls drain very quickly. The State Park though is really huge and beautiful. Just remember, if you are out of state, there will be an admission charge. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

By Laura W |

We enjoy the trails, the wildlife we get to see and the restaurant at the lodge is delicious! The Sunday morning breakfast buffet had loads of choices. We have gone on holidays too and they really put out a spread!

By jgbtravels |

We have come to appreciate Clifty Falls State Park the last few years as a peaceful and enjoyable way to spend time outdoors. The spring and fall are probably the best times to visit as the weather is much more pleasant. Clifty Falls and Little Clifty Falls are generally the the highlights of this park with paths that loop around the falls. Just be careful when it’s wet as the paths become slippery and watch out for rocks and roots that may trip you up. After a day of hiking and enjoying the scenery do visit nearby Madison, Indiana with its quaint shops and restaurants plus the historic homes/mansions.

By MarkL001 |

We enjoyed some very beautiful walks around trails and looking at the falls. The boys loved walking and then getting to play on the playground.

By Vacation_Commander |

This is officially the second-best state park in Indiana... right behind Turkey Run. The trails here are amazing. I recommend taking the one that follows the creek bed if the water is down. We also went through the cave and saw most of the falls (even though the water level was down).
Our campsite was also very nice with some of the best shower houses I've been to.
Clifty Falls, may become one of our yearly visits from now on.

By Clara A |

We planned a weekend trip here to see the waterfalls and take some pictures in the park. We hiked several of the trails but I was disappointed in how far away we were from the waterfalls. Also, the size of the waterfalls are small compared to our waterfalls in West Virginia--but I'm biased.

It's a nice enough park but I wouldn't plan on going again.

By Rikki C |

We stayed for two nights at the inn. The rooms are large and have beautiful view of the Ohio river. Very peaceful. Rooms and area very clean and staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The restaurant food was alright. Little expensive for the quality of food.

By Eva J |

I visited in July, and from the state of the waterfalls in the park, there hadn't been much rain lately. Each of them was barely a trickle of water. That being said, I loved the trails along what would be a river. If you get the chance, peek into the cave where the bats hang out.

By lc183370 |

We had a blast at Clifty Falls State Park. From the Nature Center, to the hiking trails, to fossil hunting, to the Geocaching....we had a fun-filled day! This park is gorgeous.

By johnrH3920FW |

One of Indianas jewels. 3 of the top falls in the state. Well designed nature center. Seasonal pool. Camping and Inn on site. Extremely rigorous hiking. Views of the Dragon breath fill the valley at dawn.

By Refusmojo |

Great place to visit in the Fall. It's so peaceful and beautiful. I want to stay at the lodge and enjoy the view of the OHIO River.

By 2disland |

We are so fortunate to have such a beautiful park in Madison. We have been enjoying driving through the park while enjoying all of the beautiful winter scenery as well as dining at the inn. If visiting the Madison area, a drive through the park is a must. Be sure do walk a trail and see the waterfalls. They are spectacular!

By thefamily3 |

Camped here and enjoyed a meal at the inn! So pretty there to look over the Ohio river and watch the barges! Their food and service was great! The trails there are mostly rugged so take your hiking stick!

By mammadeluca |

This gem of a place was fun to explore. The trails are well marked. Some simple, others a little more challenging. The fee to get in is reasonable...you do pay a little more is you are not a resident of Indiana, but still a reasonable price. The falls were just at a trickle on the day we visited and leaves barely starting to change. It was still a fun place to explore and get some hiking in. It isn’t like the hiking in the Adirondacks though.

By WestSideGal |

We enjoyed 5 days in this state park. We camped in a travel trailer and enjoyed our site. It looked as if most sites in the campground were level and roomy. Shower houses/restrooms were adequate but older.
Hiking trails were well marked and led to great views of falls/cliffs. I heard people complain of all the steps but I appreciated them versus crawling over rocks.
Great view of Ohio River from the lookout Tower. Inn offered a juice lunch.

By Ivy C |

Beautiful surroundings. A lot of long hard trails and some that are easy if you want to just see the falls. There is a lot of stairs to decend and climb. The views from the lookout are amazing. Some of the walls overlooking the falls are about 4 foot tall. Being somewhat afraid of heights, I had a hard time looking at the views. I did, however sit down and then look :)

By Jeff V |

Very beautiful scenery with several good trail hike options available. Park and trail signage could be improved, especially for first time visitors to the park. Once we found the park office and obtained a trail map, there were plenty of places to pull off and park at the trail heads. You'd be smart to take the trail ratings at face value; very rugged means just that, with steep sections and many tree roots waiting to trip you up. But the scenery was worth the effort, and there wasn't even that much water going over the falls on our visit.

By Brad B |

The water falls are beautiful. The park is clean. Clifty inn is a beautiful place to stay with great view of the river. Highly recommend for a fun family afternoon

By jgbtravels |

I have been coming to Madison for many years but have failed to visit Clifty Falls State Park for twenty some odd years. I realize what a mistake that was today. Sure, it’s summer and there not as much water flowing from the falls but the trails are lovely and I can only imagine how spectacular the colors are in the fall. Just driving the narrow two lane road from the south entrance to the north entrance is charming. I was also fortunate enough today to go on a docent led tour of checking for bluebirds. They have 8 bluebird boxes that the birds use for nesting. OK, 7 of them were empty but the last one still had a recent nest. The children on the tour seemed to really enjoy it plus we all learned something today. Remember if you are an Indiana resident the entrance fee is $7 as opposed to $9 for nonresidents. Don’t forget to stop by at the lodge where you can get a view of the Ohio River from the hill it’s perched on.

By Katelain H |

We really enjoyed our hike. We did little clifty because we had the kids with us and didn’t have a ton of time that day. We plan to return and do big clifty hike and camp. The waterfall was pretty and we all really enjoyed it. Nice place!

By David Shinn |

Very nice state park inn. The staff was wonderful and the room was super clean in these COVID-19 times. The restaurant had spaced out the tables and the food was good!

By Lee Ann B |

The Inn itself is charming. Typical decor of all Indiana Inns. We were given a queen bed on main floor in the older area. The newer rooms were more expensive. We paid an average price for a room as any hotels but no breakfast is included. When we entered our room noticed carpet was old and stained. The only chair in the room was ripped in two places. We had a loud continious gurgling sound coming out of our register on celing. No place in bathroom to put anything by sink and no extra plug ins anywhere. These rooms are very dated and in need of an update. If you are going to charge prices compared to all other hotel chains you need to spend money on room updates. You stay at these inns for the ambience of the inn itself and the great outdoors. Did not get to see if the other rooms at the other area where they had added on were worth the extra $ but will definately consider them next time as these old rooms are not worth the $$. The staff was very friendly.

By wagnekk |

Not breathtaking water falls, but interesting and worth a day trip. Easy to get to the main attractions if you don't like to hike or have little kids. Lots of nature and some geological information provided. If you are a hiker or avid nature explorer, you could easily spend all day here. We will go back later in the year once the flowers bloom.

By ctc10s |

Originally heard about Clifty for its fall color. There wasn't much color when we were there, but was still pleasantly surprised by this park. There are hiking trails to 4 large (60-80') waterfalls, observation tower, a lengthy tunnel carved through the rock. Don't forget a flashlight, or at least a flashlight app, for the tunnel as its long enough in the middle you can't see light from either end.

By Tonya B |

Such a beautiful park. We always enjoy ourselves. My husband and I have picnics there every spring and summer. The trails and falls are amazing.

By Angela K |

We did 3 short hikes to stretch our legs during a long road trip. Beautiful park, well mapped trails and enough trails to explore for days.Deducted a star because we couldn't locate park staff for information, but the park office provided nice maps outside the door. What a gem for the people if Madison!

By Indiana has corn |

Had a great time lots of climbing and sites to see. Ground at camp site was a little more uneven then it should be. Lots of wood lated down to make it even for RV. Give this place all stars

By Johnamcfadden |

Went because it was the thing to do in Madison. The falls were just a trickle and it was difficult to take pictures of the falls at any angle. Hiking trails are good but the stairs in several trails are a little dangerous. Not good for small children or people who aren’t able to climb.

By cjs |

this park was overall a nice visit. depending on when you visit .. the waterfalls wont have as much water as expected. but still beautiful views near the water falls and easy park to drive around in.

By Spataki85 |

I come here all the time. Indiana has a lot of great state parks but this is the best. Beautiful scenery, great hiking trails, and not overly crowded.

By Ray K |

It was below zero and snowing, roads closed and the park bare trees.

Bundled up and walked anyway. Pretty and I see the attraction of the place. Would lime to come back in Spring or fall.

By ajcongrove |

We love Clifty Falls. Beautiful hiking with some challenging trails. Our middle school and high school kids loved it. We stayed at the Inn and loved to atmosphere. Hard to get a reservation but worth it.

By Vickie D |

This was our first visit to this beautiful park. Coming from the flat northern part of the state, I enjoyed the “mountains” and winding roads through the park. The falls were a bit disappointing, as they weren’t super visible from the trails. There was some water tricking in them though. I’d love to return in April when foliage doesn’t obscure views and there’s more volume to the waterfall. The gate attendant was super friendly on our arrival.

By Fnpfritz123 |

We are on a quest to visit all of Indiana's state parks. The trails are amazing. We did hike several of the trails on a very hot and humid day. We hiked the moderate and difficult trails. Loved the scenery and the difficulty of the trails. We got a great workout.

By TarotMary |

It's a nice place to visit. But $9.00 just to drive through the park is a bit much. We went to the restaurant at the hotel there first. So if you're a guest at the hotel, you have to pay before you even get there? We managed to climb down the steps to one of the falls and it was completely dried up. Disappointing.

By faithbow920 |

its beautiful year round We have hiked every trail and camp there often. its a very clean peaceful get away.

By Tarebear6464 |

Spent the day walking the trails. Very nice and peaceful. The Cost is $7 per vehicle for Indiana resident. There is a hotel and restraunt on property. While in the area check out the town of Madison. Very cute historic town.

By Angela E |

My family stayed at the Clifty Inn for a few days in the past week, hiked some trails, and visited some family who were camping in the campground. All of the grounds were beautiful, and the facilities were well-kept and inviting. Most of the trails are moderate, rugged, or very rugged and require the ability to go up and down a lot of stairs or rocky and hilly terrain that can be slippery when wet-- especially if coated in wet fall leaves. Not all of the trails are good for kids; some of them are too rugged for younger kids. That said, the views of the falls and canyon are worth it. The scenery is breathtaking. The Clifty Inn also has gorgeous views of the Ohio River, with some rooms having a patio overlooking the river. The restaurant at the inn was good. Local eateries seem to have taken a hit from the pandemic and aren't all open reliably for dine-in eating. So, plan ahead well for your meals. Overall, a great escape into nature while still having typical hotel amenities.
