The drive can be done with any type of vehicle. Just use common sense. When you enter the canyon it literally takes your breath away. Just gorgeous. Many pull overs so take a lunch and sit by the water and enjoy the scenery.

This is a beautiful drive, lots to see along the way. Road can be a little bumpy in places wouldn't recommend in a car. This is a must drive for people who love scenery.

Headed south end of the Bighorn Mountains to/from I-25 in the summer (dry) time of year? Then this cutoff is worth the added 30 minutes or so it will take. And that's if you don't stop and walk around in this beautiful narrow canyon.

I drive this uphill (east to west) in July 2016 in a (very) low clearance car, and was able to make it without any difficulty. So perhaps the road is in better shape now than some of the posters from earlier years who recommend high-clearance vehicles only.

This would be a great area to car-camp. Some ORV's were buzzing about the area, from those camping with their small trailers.

We tried the road yesterday. It was no fun for 1 mile and we turned around. We have a 4wd SUV but the road was too rough for us.I am sorry to have missed the rest of the 15 miles, but it was no fun for us.Drivers beware.

I'm a local, and a high clearance vehicle is an absolute must. It's pretty bumpy, but the scenery is absolutely beautiful. It's one of my favorite things to do in my free time.

Well traveled and maintained dirt road through Crazy Woman canyon. Lots of camp sites and breathtaking views throughout. Do not forget your camera or make sure your camera is charged fully because you are going to take a lot of pictures.

1st, no 4x4 needed! The road is rough but not too bad. Saw a sedan down in the canyon. Amazing limestone cliffs with giant rocks in the bottom of the canyon and a clear and cool stream. Take the time and stop several time to get out and see the sights.

I would strongly recommend driving downhill. Just don't tell the rental car company i went off road.

If your in the area and ideally in a 4 wheel drive car this is a must

Absolutely Stunning - we'll worth a walk down onto the stream running through the canyon

This is the kind of "only locals know" place. All seasons will give you an awe-inspiring experience. Fall and spring explodes with color, but don't disregard summer's bliss. Winter may be grand too but I have never been. I will take slippers over snow boots 10 times out of 10. After all, I am a sun sign!!

We drove a Chevy Suburban. The dirt road was challenging in places, but we turned around in the boulder canyon... We just were not willing to commit to the very rough terrain there. However! The drive from 16 West on 33 up to that point was spectacular. Deep blue/purple, yellow and white wildflowers, towering ponderosa pine trees, deer, beaver, rapidly flowing water, boulders, cliffs, etc. There was evidence of primitive camping in several places, and no question as to why... No cell signals and peaceful nature as far as the eye could see! A must-do "rugged" drive.

Such a hidden beauty. It is very slow going but worth it to be able to take in all its beauty. 2018 was our first time there and we are heading back this week! We are making it a yearly trip, taking family and friends who have never seen it before.

Take the time to meander through this canyon. The road can be bumpy but a high clearance vehicle will work just fine. The road is also narrow. Having said that, definitely check it out!! It's beautiful!!

This is a scenic dirt road that goes on for about 15 miles. There’s some camping in the area. The road is not very wide so you might have to pull over to let oncoming traffic get by. There’s a stream that runs along most of the road. It’s pretty neat.

As others have stated, a high clearance vehicle is recommended. When we got to the "bottom" where the huge boulders were, we turned back rather trying to drive over the ruts and rocks for fear of damaging our Honda CRV. We did get out to walk through the gorge so I could shoot photos of the beautiful boulders and creek. Very nice!

Just returned from our Crazy Woman Canyon drive and would recommend anyone in the Buffalo area to go.....it is a little rough in spots and is a little narrow in a few spots with one vehicle bridges, but the canyon wall, the huge boulders, and of course the stream rushing down thru the canyon is awesome. We passed several SUVs while we drove our jeep. There are pull off spots to stop and listen to that rushing water sound. Several kodak moments spots are scattered throughout the 5M trip.

I was apprehensive to take this road since I read the other reviews and I was driving a low clearance car - a Toyota Solara convertible - essentially a Camry body. There are two ways to do this - from Old Highway 87 to Crazy Woman Canyon Road and drive through the canyon and emerge at the end onto route 16, or the reverse. Because the route from Highway 87 to CWCR starts off on a decent dirt road until you get further into the canyon I decided to go that direction and turn back if it got uncomfortable. Note that someone said they got there and it was closed and someone else said the road was better than in the past because they are working on it - there is a sign at the entrance saying it is closed Monday to Friday (I went on Sunday) and I saw at least one piece of construction equipment so they may simply be working on it during the week.

Long story short I made it all the way through without bottoming out once on rocks or ditches, but it wasn’t easy to do that. It required constant attention and mapping out your route through a rocky area. It took me 2 hours to go end to end. I considered turning around at the end and going back through in the other direction since there are always different views but I decided not to push my luck. If you come in from 16 you will hit the worst parts of the road first and be going more downhill.

I would definitely recommend this. Anyone with a high clearance vehicle should have no issues. With a low clearance vehicle it is definitely doable but if you are not careful you will hit the underside of your car on rocks. The views are beautiful - the river practically the whole way. Sheer rock faces. Beautiful trees and fields. I started around 9 and at first the road was empty. By the time I emerged at 11 it had gotten busier. Go early.

There are plenty of turnouts to let others pass.

I have driven through the canyon twice this summer. I saw different things each time I went. The lighting was different at each visit which made different aspects of the canyon pop. We saw several cars trying to make the drive. They struggled. Definitely would recommend taking a vehicle with higher clearance and possibly 4wd or ATV. Bring your camera. It is definitley worth the drive.

I've been down, (and up) Crazy Woman Canyon many times, and I still love it. I like the high rock walls on one side and the tumbling waters of Crazy Woman Creek on the other. Road is narrow, twisting, and rough, there are some one lane bridges so be careful, but you don't need a 4x4 to drive the road. The scenery is awesome, and the drive is relaxing and fairly stress less for the most part. A great side trip in the Big Horn Mountains.

We just drove this for the second time, this time from the top down. Road is narrow and steep in places, but can be done with a regular car if you’re careful, although high clearance makes it more comfortable. Allow a couple of hours to really enjoy it and take time to get out to take pictures. It’s a spectacular drive, and we’ll do it every time we’re in the Big Horns.

The road is a little rough at spots, but mostly not bad at all. Made the ride in a Hyundai Elantra and only had one spot that was a little tricky. Ride make you know how small we really are. Beautiful sites would do again to show somebody the sites.

Great adventure. Canyon is tight and you need a vehicle with some ground clearance. The views are great. From 187 to 16 it’s about 15 miles. Need about 90 minutes but go easy and enjoy the sights

We drove the Crazy Women Canyon road outside Buffalo Wyoming. We took highway 16 west out of Buffalo and drove for approximately 30 miles. The drive was very scenic. The sign for the turn off to Crazy Women canyon road is small but very noticeable. Initially we weren't sure about the road as it was narrow, gravel and rocky, but we kept going. The road follows a mountain stream and travel is slow due to the road condition. The canyon is about 5.5 miles long as you exit to the prairie. Its about 30 mins back to buffalo .

One of the most beautiful canyons we have gone through! If you're going to be in Buffalo, Wyoming, This is a must day trip. I recommend starting off of Hwy 16 and once you are at the end of the canyon, turn around and go back the other way and see the canyon the other way. You won't regret it!

We were looking for a day drive and this was suggested at the info Center, not well posted as at one point your not sure if your on someones private drive. Don't take a car! we were followed by someone in a rental low clearance and they bottomed out on the rocks several times and had trouble on the hills. The view changes with every turn, incurable water falls follow the route, an unhurried pace and you may need to back up for other vehicles approaching which can be interesting. Glad we took the time to explore a little

Just a short drive from Buffalo, Wyoming off from highway 16. Creek meanders through thausands of turns, then cuts it's way through and around many huge boulders towards the opening of this canyoun. Definitely worth the short drive to spend some time and relax.

Drove through Crazy Woman Canton today, absolutely gorgeous!! Would recommend anyone coming past to do the drive! Terrain is a bit rocky and had some slush and snow today, but no issues getting through

Great scenery. Well done the drive from Buffalo. Great area to fly fish the pocket water for Brook Trout. Drive took roughly 1 1/2 hours.

I was hesitant to drive the canyon because I had a Toyota Corolla rental car. Many of the trip advisor reviews said you needed a high profile vehicle to go down the canyon so i didn't think i could see it at first. I stopped at the Buffalo Chamber of Commerce and the woman there explained that earlier this spring they did some blasting and the road was much smoother. She assured me a Toyota could make it down the dirt canyon road.

I would suggest taking the canyon during the daylight, don't drive it in the rain unless you have 4WD. Make sure whatever type of vehicle you have has good breaks, mostly for the paved Big Horn portion of the drive. Know that you will have no cell service so have a full tank of gas and bring some food and water just incase. There are people along the trail who camp so don't feel like if you have car trouble there won't be someone around to help. I drove to the top of the Big Horn mountains and then worked my way down to the bottom of the canyon. Many reviews talked about the road being one and a half car links wide and that there would be pull offs to let other cars pass. This worried me because I wasn't sure how wide the road would be but after traveling the canyon I can assure you there's plenty of places to pull off. You're not driving along the edge of the canyon with fear of falling off you're actually driving at the bottom of the canyon near a river and you will be very safe. Beautiful sites around every turn. Definitely worth it.

I have really wanted to visit this canyon for several years now. Upon arrival to the long dirt road that leads to it, we discovered that it is completely closed. That was on 7/22/22. Someone should have announced this somewhere, in my opinion. I have no idea whether they have fixed that sole access road yet, but what a bummer that was.

Amazing rocks/water. Parking is not easily accessible. Narrow road. Well worth the drive. I’d go again.

By Sisterofmany |

We were apprehensive about driving the road in a low clearance vehicle (Prius) but didn't have any issues - just drove slowly which you kind of want to do anyway since it's such an amazing place.

We went on a early week day morning and there was only one other vehicle along the road. We sometimes got out and walked a bit.

Next time we go we'd maybe park our car at one spot and do a lot more walking.

By olynn2017 |

Really unique canyon - would recommend stopping and walking in at least one spot. There are several pull-offs. Also, canyon itself is about 7 mi long, so we turned around at the end and went back through for a different view. Loved it!

First, this is a fabulous drive, do it if you can.
Previous reviews (and locals) provide (seemingly) conflicting information re: road conditions, perhaps related to which way you drive.
We drove it in a Subaru Outback, no problems with ground clearance.
But... We entered from highway 16 and (while we had no clearance problems per se) the road down the canyon (to the waterfall) very rutted and rough. In addition, the really spectacular scenery is east of the waterfall.
From the waterfall we headed east, the road significantly better in the canyon and the road from the top of the canyon to Old Hwy 87 is gravel but very smooth.

A couple of people had brought a small high-low camper down from the west entry road, but there is limited camping and less room for a pull behind. I'm not sure I would try that. We had a 4 x 4 Explorer, went slow and enjoyed the raw beauty. There are miles of open dirt road you travel before you get to the actual canyon and river. The canyon sits in the middle of a National Forest. It was worth the drive.

A very scenic canyon, highlighted by huge boulders and a stream very near the road. Remote with a narrow road, so a 4WD vehicle is best.

Wife and I went leaf peeping along Crazy Woman Canyon Road Sept. 29,2024. Gravel road. No pot holes or ruts or washouts. No need for high clearance or 4x4. Cars can do it. Didn’t understand all the hipe on needing a 4x4. Maybe at one time it was rough but we saw no signs of road having been repaired or washed out from rains. Definitely recommend driving it.

This was a beautiful detour for us. High cliffs and huge boulders. Slow driving - road is not ideal but we were in an SUV so no problems. Lots of places to get out and explore the creek or boulders. Drive through time depends on how much you want to explore, but you'll be driving really slow. This is a destination road, not a pass through.

Several years ago I was there and I was stepping onto a lichen covered rock when the lichen took off into a cloud of tiny butterflies that swirled around me. It was magical and is one of my finest memories.

The canyon is accessible from Hwy 16 or Crazy Woman Canyon Rd off Old Hwy 87. FR 33 goes through the canyon. It's accessible with all cars. We drove a Toyota Camry during a rain storm and passed up a Toyota Prius. However, weather in the mountains is unpredictable, so check it before you go. The canyon road is all gravel and is five miles long. Most of it follows the North Fork Crazy Woman Creek. There are a few rough spots on the road, but we never had a traction issue and never came close to bottoming out. There are campsites along the side of the road. There is a nice small waterfall and lots of picture spots along the river.

We were here in early May and there was still snow on the ground so we drove as far as we could then hit the road closed sign. So we hiked up as far as we could then drove to the other side and walked back. Very steep in areas so I'm glad we didn't take our vehicle on it, but definitely very crazy beautiful.

By MaryHills |

Not to be attempted in a small car, but any truck or SUV should be OK. The scenery was fantastic! It's truly a beautiful experience - one of the best on my trip West. I absolutely recommend this drive.

If you are traveling through Wyoming possibly enroute to Yellowstone or Grand Teton National Parks, make Buffalo, Wyoming a stop on your trip. Just west of Buffalo in the Big Horn Mountains, take the Crazy Woman Canyon drive to see some spectacular scenery and dip your toes into Crazy Woman Creek. The canyon has several pull outs to get out of your vehicle and take pictures or just feel the fresh mountain air. There is lots of wildlife including deer, badgers, beaver dams and moose occasionally graze the willows. This is also mountain lion habitat so keep your dogs close. This is really a spectacular drive you won't regret.

this was o place off the beaten hyway, but it is a must see. the dirt road the dirt road that went thru it was awesome. alot of different lanscapes. water falls, creek along side of the road. was beautiful

This drive is incredibly beautiful
Different scenery going up the canyon from down the canyon. Many spots are single vehicle width so.watch for cars coming opposite direction.
Should have high clearance vehicle. Few spots to pull off to enjoy the scenery
