The best Farmers Market you could ask for! Plus a tour of downtown Madison! Plan to spend a lot of time and NOT a lot of money!!

Wonderful farmers market! It truly must be one of the best markets in the US. The sidewalks along the Capital are filled with vendors. Beautiful produce, flowers, breads. A must see if you are ever in town on a Saturday morning.

This is the largest farmer's market in the state and is very reasonable. Our family does not miss a Saturday on the square. PS... do not forget your spicy cheese bread.

Fresh fresh produce
Nice day strolling the square, sit in the shade on the Capitol lawn, go have a beer at one of the outdoor cafes. Great day

If you are in the Madison area on a Saturday, I would recommend the Dane County Farmer’s Market. There is a huge selection of local produce, meats and cheese. Don’t skip the spicy cheese bread and the pastries and cookies.

The Dane County Farmer's Market held on the Capitol Square has to be one of best in the entire country. Great selection of vendors, reasonable prices, wonderful setting! Just one warning if you don't like crowds, get there EARLY.

Great place to visit. All fresh vegtables & strawberries, raspberries and more fruit! Bery clean place!

There is something for everyone at the market - enjoy the farmers, their produce and the overall wonderful atmosphere of outdoor shopping for healthy food with a friend!

It is fun to walk around the Capitol with your family. There are many booths. Most of them are selling vegetables and flowers. You hit the jackpot with your kids when you find Stella's. This is is great place to grab a delicious breakfast. Kids will love the rolls and cookies. Moms and Dads will love the empanadas. A must for the whole family is the spicy cheese bread. Yum! Don't skip it. You can sit and eat it all on the Capitol steps.

You can make a whole morning out of this Farmers Market. This is much more than just fresh veggies and fruit, this is an experience. There is music playing, food to enjoy, and crafts to buy. There is parking around the area. There's a public garage that is $5.00 for the day. My advice is to get there early, bring a cloth bag to carry your goodies. Use the restroom before you go because I did not see any portable bathrooms. My guess is that there are public bathrooms in the courthouse that is open during the market. Also noted it's hard to find a garbage can. The cans have a canvas lid over them so you can't throw away your garbage, perhaps this is to minimize the amount of bees. The market covers the area around the court house. You step into the flow of people traffic and enjoy. You will see people eating their way through the Market. Some people brought a picnic lunch and picked up a few goodies and then ate on the shaded part of the lawn. I found their prices to be fair and quality of veges excellent. Feel free to price shop, but honestly, there wasn't a huge difference in prices. They do have fresh flower bunches for $5.00 that were gorgeous. The fresh cheese curds are worth the drive alone! Some booths have free tasting. You will see some duplication, but understandable in a market that large. Go and enjoy!

Stroll around the capital and enjoy a walk while seeing lots of foods to sample. Good place to buy cheeses.

The Dane County Farmers' Market takes place every Saturday morning from April to November on Capitol Square and is a local tradition that must be experienced. I first visited in the summer of 2016 and had to go back when I returned to visit family in 2017. It is billed as the largest producer-only farmers' market in the country with over 300 vendors, but to me it is a must-see and do for visitors to Madison even just to people watch. Speaking of which...it can get oppressively crowded, i.e., barely room to move -- it's like a slowly moving people glacier -- but as long as you're prepared for this going in you won't regret it. Naturally, the produce is unsurpassed. Don't miss Stella's hot & spicy cheesy bread -- it is, itself, a favorite of Madison residents and visitors alike -- but be prepared for long lines. It's worth it. Wisconsin's world-renowned dairy farms are well-represented. For fresh cheese curds there's no comparison to any place in the country. We love the multi-flavored varieties at Murphy's. Numerous vendors carry various cheeses as well as curds and sampling is allowed at many. Of course, not only are the fresh fruits and vegetables a must, but there are meats galore, pastries, flowers, and just about anything that can come from a farm. Skip the supermarket and stock up at the farmers' market. But get there early (by 9 am) if you want to avoid the crush.

This market is a must. Try it once and you're hooked! Fantastic veggies, cheeses, bakery goods, and so much more! Grab a coffee and sample some of the goodies.

It's cool that this takes place at the capital steps. Lots of beautifull fruits, veggies, flowers and crafts. Have yet to go when it wasn't insanely busy, if you don't like crowds don't bother. Great shopping, and eatting on State St, good venders

This is held on Saturday mornings. I goes on the 4 blocks surrounding the capitol building. Great vendors of all sorts of produce and baked goods. We spent about 2 hours going around. There were quite of few things we could have gotten if we were not on the road. A great place to buy produce and baked goods.

I have been to a lot of farmers markets around Madison, WI and it is truly one of the best. A lot of variety and good prices too. Besides what is in season there also sell bakery, herbs, plants, cheeses and meats. I only go for what is in season, my fav meat place is D&G processing who have the best bacon around. My husband & sister love the meat sticks-Colorado & Sportsman. Along with 4 blocks of crammed tents, you have the capital and state street and all the other benefits of downtown Madison. And the hours are perfect. I always go first thing as it does get very, very busy about 10am.

First of all it is very nice to have a market with using produce locally. All vendors are this way. Though it was somewhat difficult to find any coffee or food trucks. We walked around for two hours and sure had some samples, saw a large array of produce...but very rare to get food other than some bread, or cheese. So we ended up leaving the area and finding food. The vendors all said food trucks were not allowed. I have to think that there was some area that served food. We must have just walked away from that. It was really nice area. A lot of people and the vibe was very up beat.

What a treat. Visited the market and the only disappointment was that I can't take anything home with me since I have to fly back. Gorgeous wild flowers, beating produce, wonderful mushrooms and yummy baked goods and fried cheese curds. Definitely a visitors or locals premier destination!

We've been to farmer's markets all over the world and I can definitely say that the Madison Farmers Market is the best. therefore it is probably also the most crowded, you feel like you're just in a line all day

The farmer's market surrounding the capital was a charged atmosphere of all sorts of vendors; beautiful flowers, excellent vegetables and on some of the surrounding streets there are jewelry vendors, coffees and pastries. It couldn't be a better location. My only suggestion is to get as early as possible as it was so crowded it was difficult to make your way around. I would never miss this if I were in Madison on a Saturday.

We took our grandchildren to the Madison Farmers Market. They loved the fresh cheese curds, fruits and veggies.

I get why people from out of town get so horny for the spicy cheese bread, I'm from a small town, I get it. But if you're into a peaceful market experience and a casual Saturday morning I urge you to stay so far away from Madison Farmers market. It's really bananas down here on Saturdays. REALLY BANANAS.

Variety and quality is impressive. Fruits and vegetables are from real farms sold by real farmers, there are cheese and honey samplers and varieties of cheesy breads. Smells good and there are sweets and pies and coffee. Extremely crowded, I was unable to move, but it was the morning of game day ( Badgers football) as well as UW Madison parents weekend.Very large market in a nice location around Capitol building which is the heart of Madison.

This is by far one of the best farmer's markets I've been too. Plan to spend a great portion of your morning at the market. The people, the food, the atmosphere is Fantastic. I would highly recommend doing this if you are in Madison. Come hungry!

In a state where there's so much to love, here's one more reason. The State Capitol belongs to the people. Not some stuffy building given over to offices and committee meetings and stonewalling legislators, Capitol Square in Madison occupies the center of town, where kids play on the grass and run up and down the stairs and the citizens of Madison walk and bike around the square on Saturday mornings, thousands of them! They play music and preach politics, buy flowers and crafts and veggies and snack from all kinds of food trucks, take pictures and fly kites and toss frisbees, pull kids in wagons and bring the dogs too! Climb up the stairs and catch a beautiful view of the lake- I never know which is Monona and which is Mendota-all within the shadow of that beautiful dome, and celebrate one of the best places to be in this unique, quirky, walkable city.

Extremely large (goes all the way around Capitol Square) market with a huge variety of selections from meats and jerky to honey to vast arrays of vegetables/fruits!! Make sure you circle the square in the correct direction (counter-clockwise) or you will definitely be fighting a losing battle. Many of the bakeries have unique and tasty items to munch on as you walk the "market trail", and many of the restaurants on the other side of the street offer coffee or other items on the street. All-in-all it is a great experience and well worth the time! Usually really crowded from about 8 am through noon, if you want a quick trip go early, 6-7 am!

This Saturday market is in a great location around the capital. Very picturesque but it also adds to the vibrant downtown scene. Lots of variety of food and products. Lots of baked goods and fresh fruit for out of town folks with no opportunity to cook. Coffee shops and cafes around the square offer a good seat for people watching.

I was visiting with my family from NJ and we met up with some friends in the area to walk around the Farmer's Market. It's a nice walk around the Capitol, with lots of fun produce, flowers, and of course, many flavors of cheese curds to sample. I'd definitely recommend it.

Full disclosure - I'm a farmer vendor at this market.
Best assortment of farm stuff you will find anywhere. Beyond the produce, there are lots of cheeses, meats of all kinds, jams, jellies, maple syrup and bakery. ALL has to be grown or made by the person selling it.
In the summer, the market is an experience. Many people cruise the whole square several times and even have a bit of a picnic with goodies purchased that day. I'm there every Sat from 6 AM til about 2 PM from late April til early Nov. See you there.

The farmers market is a great morning to enjoy food flowers people coffee, parking can be tricky but is an enjoyable event. I love buying the spicey cheese bread and eating it right on the spot! Watch out for strollers.

There was amazing food, great local produce, cheese and breads! Also a great flower selection and god several jams!

You name it you can find it at the Dane County Farmers Market - fresh fruits, vegetables, garden plants, hanging flower pots, fried cheese, sausage, chicken, beef, pork, spices and the best cinnamon rolls in the Midwest. This is only a partial listing of what's available at the Madison Farmer's Market. Plus you are surrounded with some of the best coffee shops in the nation. Only the side walk separates you from the most majestic State Capitol Building in the U.S.A. which is surrounded by a lovely lawn that allows children to run, play, nap and snack. After the Farmers Market venture down State Street which is lined with vendors with their lovely hand made jewelry, scarves and wearing apparel. Don't miss this Midwest treasure whether you have an hour or an entire day.

Wisconsin is a great place for farmer's markets and Madison is a crown jewel of one. The runs the sidewalk area that surrounds the square around the capital building. This makes it a much larger than most markets.
There's vendors from all over, with cheese, honey, meats, eggs and fruits and veggies. Pretty much whatever you's want in one loop.
The challenge is people come from far to be there and turn it into a scene. It can be hard to get around the strollers but if you make it a game it's less irritating.
There's food you can buy and eat there or you can wander down one of the side streets to grab a meal after.

If you are visiting from out of town during the summer, you should take advantage at least once, just to tell the folks back home about it. If you are serious about food shopping for the week, I would go to any of the other Farmer's Markets doted around Madison. (I've found going to the outlying Farmer's Markets is cheaper for most things.) For me, it is too crowded. Add in the parents who bust out their enormous four wheeled shopping cart contraptions that holds their children and purchases and you've made an already tight squeeze on the sidewalk even tighter. The lawn quickly fills up with families, so good luck finding a place. It may be if you get there when they first set up, it will be better. Otherwise, it is not worth the struggle.

Have spent many a Saturday morning walking around the square and picking up plants, flowers, food items. Love the Stella's cheesy bread.

If in Madison the best way to spend a Saturday AM. Go early and enjoy your choice of coffees, fresh juices and pastries of all kinds. Walk around the Capital Square where you will enjoy fruits, vegetables, baked goods, flowers, plants and beautiful people. Such a great morning for all ages to enjoy. I have been going for years with family.

I have fond memories of visiting relatives who live in WI and or favorite stop was always the Farmers Market. Now that I live close by I love taking my kids! So many great memories there. Many of them start and end with grabbing a favorite treat like a potato donut or the hot n' spicy cheese bread from Stella's, sitting on the Capitol lawn & enjoying life, love n family:)

The place is cool and a lot of things can be found from legumes to meats. Most part of the products are organic. Unfortunetely, there were not many options of fruits available.

The Farmer's Market (spring, summer, fall) is held on the State Capitol Grounds, a beautiful site all on its own. It is crowded, but you adjust your pace--if you want to go quickly, go before 7:00 am. The variety is wide--fresh produce, organic meats and eggs, flowers, baked goods, all beautifully displayed and sold by friendly, knowledgeable people. If you want to talk to them, go before 7:00 am or after 2:00 pm, because they are BUSY! Every corner has something going on, or several somethings going on, usually political. There are street entertainers on the outer sidewalk of the Square, as well as non-food vendors and food carts. There are excellent restaurants all around the Square. State Street shopping, the Capitol building, The Wisconsin Historical Museum and Wisconsin Veterans Museum. If you go home hungry or not entertained, it's your own fault.

Dane Country Farmers' Market was always on my must-visit list. This market is located all around capitol and offers fresh fruits, veggies, cheese, food stalls and all range of meats. We bought some fresh apples including honey crisp (my favorites now), tasted some different cheese flavors including the herbs and jalapenos and bought some fresh Cheese Curds from Farmer John’s as well, had Pumpkin Muffin and Raspberry Scone from Chris & Loris Bakehouse...

I always enjoy the Madison Farmer’s Market! I am gluten free due to celiac and there are now 3 bakery option! This week I bought mushroom, English cucumbers, cheese and tomatoes. Yummy!

It is a truly community event. You can meet your friends, neighbors, co-workers, classmates there without an appointment. The music, the political signs always will give you a good morning greeting there.

I assume due to the pandemic the location is now at the Alliant Center which seems like a good change anyway, there would appear to be plenty of parking which might not exist downtown. Though I suspect there will be more vendors later in the year, was still a nice stop. Enjoyed looking at the selection and though we couldn't take any fruits or veggies with us as we were traveling though many looked good. Did get some good pastries however.

If you are in the Madison area on a Saturday morning, treat yourself to a yummy experience. Sure, you can buy vegetables at any Farmer's Market, so treat yourself to the unusual. Baked cheese, Emu meat, popcorn, beautiful flower arrangements. Need a break from the crowd? Go into the Capital Building and lay in the floor to view the Beautiful Rotunda ceiling. Be sure to act like a native and walk the Square counter-clockwise. Enjoy the treats.

My wife and I have been going to the market for about 40 years. We have always enjoyed the atmosphere and the variety of products offered. No matter how hard we try, we always end up going home with more than we had planned.

You must get here very early otherwise it is quite difficult to move through the crowds and do any actual produce shopping. You also need to shop around (again, difficult once it fills up) for decent prices as a lot of stuff is very expensive. I call this one a 'fancy' farmers market. Everyone raves about the spicy cheese bread which gets more and more expensive every year... I'm sure it's amazing. I can't afford it!! Same goes for the food trucks it's nice they're around to give folks hot food options, but they are a bit expensive. I'm used to farmers markets with a little more affordable crops (hence my low-ish rating). It's great to bring visitors, but bring LOTS of cash, and get there EARLY. (note that parking also costs $$ so I try to bike in)

If I offered one tip on the market, it would be to go first thing in the morning. That way you beat the crowd, while being exposed to all that is offered. The market has everything - fresh cheese curds, vegetables, beef sticks, honey, bakery, flowers and plants, herbs, popcorn, and much more. Can’t beat the cheese bread.

This is the best rated farmers market in the state! Fresh fruit, veggies, coffee, bakery and much more!

This is by far the most amazing farmers market I have visited, and reason enough to go back to Madison

Prior to our first visit years ago people told us about the farmers market and how great it was. I was doubtful until I had my first experience. I would encourage all to check out at least once. Parking in the ramps makes it a short walk. Bring lots of dollar bills to make purchasing product easier for the vendors

I went with my husband and 2 kids. It's in a beautiful location right by the capital. For me there was so much to look at and enjoy. If I were going again I would leave the kids at home, because there isn't much for them. There is a lot of variety of fruits, vegetables, flowers, and more.

This farmers' market is a Madison institution. The market stretches around the scenic Capitol Square, a truly wonderful location. Vendors offer locally grown produce, bakery items, cheese, garden plants, meats and more. Those hungry can grab a bite at one of the many good carts.

Simply one of the best farmer's markets I've been to. This is a must for any visitors to Madison. There is plenty of variety in market stalls and there are lots of food trucks parked around the outside of the square (that is if you don't fill up on amazing pastries from the market itself).

The Madison Farmer's Market surrounds Capitol Square every Sat am. It kicks off around 6am. My favorite time to arrive is no later than 6:30...with an early arrival you can get around the square with a great cup of coffee and minimal crowds. By 8:30...CROWDS and I am long gone. The produce and flowers are great buys. The Amish pies...oh my...try the cherry rhubarb...fabulous! Then hit Stella's bakery booth for the best cheesy bread, warm and OOOOHHHHH so yummy (get two, as you will eat half a one the first time you taste it before you hit the car!). Parking is fairly easy when you get there early...lots of lots just a block or two at most away. If you go early, you can easily bring kids in a stroller or wagon. After 8:30...forget it. People will hate you and you will hate yourself for even trying it. People watching is fun too! Do not miss this. (In winter it moves indoors).

The market around the capitol building is filled with fresh grown produce, baked goods, flowers ... it is incredible. And try the spicy cheese bread ... it is to die for and no butter or other dressing required - just eat it straight up (and don't forget to try the cheese curds too!

If you are in Madison on a Saturday, attending the Farmer's Market is a must. The sights and smells are wonderful, people are polite and it's a great way to spend a part of your day. Locals and visitors enjoy this event.
It can get very crowded but people are patient and you can always take a break on The Capital lawn to people watch.

I'm not a farmer's market type of guy. However, our friends wanted to show us this place so I went. It was very large and very crowded. You could find all varieties of plants and herbs and produce. If that's your thing, you will love it.

Seriously a huge market, wraps around the whole square. Parking can be found pretty close down side streets next to the square. We try to make it this several times a summer.

The farmers market is held on Saturdays. It is large and one can buy a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables. You can also buy food that you can eat there as you visit. There have a system of helping people on EBT by fruits and vegetables.

We typically visit for the atmosphere more than anything else. However, we always get the spicy cheese bread. Some other things offered are fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, corn, honey, salsa's, bakery items and more. Go early as it can get very busy in the later morning and difficult to fight the crowds.

Such wonderfully fresh food, flowers, and pastries. Good people, and great atmosphere on the Capital Square!

For personalized food and plants, it's hard to beat, There are sellers from all over the county and beyond and each have a story of what they have grown or made or cultured. It's best to get there early in the morning, like around 7:00. By mid-morning, there are literally hundreds of customers, all walking slowing around The Square in the same direction, and all buying for their present larder and their future menus. There is one stand that sells only garlic, and many kinds. Another stand seems to have more kinds of cheeses than I thought existed. This kind of wonder is, literally, everywhere.

This is actually the Dane County Farmers Market. It is huge! So many veggie, meat, cheese and bakery stands. Walking around the Capitol square seeing all the produce was a delight. Very crowded.

We enjoy coming to this market if we are here on Saturday. There are so many vendors selling baked goods, vegetables, honey, cheese and flowers. The prices are reasonable.

Fun to buy all the locally frown produce, etc. but it's pricey and very crowded... Try to leave the dogs and strollers at home if you can

Great variety, products, and people. We have a great time every visit. Highly recommend the cheesy bread! The lines can be long but move quickly.

Great Market you can cover in a hour if you'd like. Walk the square surrounding the beautiful capital building and enjoy the fresh produce from the locals.

Such a cute place to bye things. From plants and vegetables to rings and cute baskets to put some stuff. Recommend to eat the cheese bread, so damn good! I don't know where in the square they actually are, they use to move.. But normally in the corners. Relax you will find, since people make long lines to get the bread!! Other little "store" they have free samples of cheese, all types you want! Go in the morning like 9h 10h because they close 12h 1 in the afternoon. Enjoy because you will love! Many people in the square!

The farmer's market on the square surrounding the Capitol in Madison is a happening every Saturday morning from spring through fall. There are great selections of veggies, baked goods, cut and plantable flowers, and craft made cheeses and sausages. The crowd - made up of all ages, genders and political persuasions - ambles amicably in a counter-clockwise rotation (entirely appropriate for the Mad City) stopping to sample or buy veggies, cheese, salsa and various other wares. If you are inclined to grab some veggies and go, try to get there between 7 am and 9 am as the places gets increasingly congested as the morning wears on. This is a fun way to spend an hour or two on Saturday morning and bring home some fresh veggies, cheese and a loaf of unique home baked bread. I always bring my grandson, now 10, and he has loved it for years.

This is a destination farmers market, always a great selection and fun - with literally 1000's of shoppers.

I go to this farmer's market every year I visit Madison. It's so much fun. Most vendors have samples. If you are a cheese lover, this is the place for you! There are so many cheeses to try and they are DELICOUS! There are kohlrabi as big as your head; they are so good! But my very favorite and the best food to buy and a must have is the spicy cheese bread from Stella's bakery! OMG! It is to die for! It's freshly baked and when you get it, it's HOT! And the cheese is melty and wonderful! I love that they don't allow pets which makes it easier to get around. Make sure to pick up a bag of popcorn from Tietz Family Farms. The red is the best!

Madison Farmer's Market is a great time for the whole family. There are so many unique, locally grown foods, flowers and crafts that everyone has to come to the Farmer's Market at least once. Our family parks off the square and then walks around to find our favorites. I love the fresh produce, honey, pickles, and cheese I can't find anywhere else. We stop and get a sweet roll or cookie and sit on the lawn to people watch. Every year we try to stop 3-4 times during the summer.

Nothing better any time of the season than to walk around the Capitol and enjoy all of the fresh food offered! Sip on Java, listen to music, and eat your way around the Square!!!

I recently went with friends to the Farmer’s market for the first time. There are a ton of different vendors spread out around the whole perimeter of the capitol building. Stella’s bread is a must-stop, as well as Taco Cat for cat lovers. Definitely get there early, though because it started getting very busy around 9:30ish.

Madison was a great place to live in and raise kids till about 5 years ago. Union Terrace was a fav place to go. But over time, despite much remodeling of the terrace, the city stalled in what to do about weed and algae growth in the lakes. Result: hikes along shore to picnic point were no longer pleasant due to smell in summer. Madison has many great restaurants and lots of music and nightlife. Farmers Market is the best. But the influx of people and urban sprawl has transformed the place. We left for a small mtn town in the west and love it. Madison has become a fun place to visit in many ways, but I wouldn't want to live there.

We've been there twice now, both times all the people customers and vendors are nice and pleasant to be around. Even though it can get crowded people seem to roll with the bustling atmosphere and enjoy looking for something good to eat or to buy. If you want Stella's spicy cheese bread make sure you get there early enough!

I've been to many farmer's markets but the has to be one of, if not, the best market I've been to. This is a producers only market so there is nobody selling jewelry, essential oils, scarves, etc. This market is fresh produce, flowers, home grown landscape plants and veggie starts, and baked goods. It is a beautiful market surrounding the Wisconsin Capitol buliding. If you're around, put this on your list to visit for sure...be sure to bring cash.

We always seem to find what we are looking for. My husband has found hard to find ghost pepper plants in the spring. You can literally eat your way around the market. It is the best one I have found around the state.

I have never been at such a fantastic farmer's market. The sights, sounds and smells are all incredible. Very orderly and excellent place to people watch. Plenty of food to eat like squeaky cheese curds, huge donuts and spicy bread.

The madison farmers market is a wonderful and free event every Saturday morning at the square surrounding the Capitol. Park nearby on the street or in any of the nearby ramps ($2-4 to park in a ramp, bring quarters for street meters) and enjoy the sights, sounds and smells. Heavily organic based, you will find over a hundred tents selling seasonal and usually family owned farms. Lots of great cheese, bakery items, flowers and plants. Be sure to try the spicy cheesy bread - a local institution. On the outside ring you will find dozens of madison food carts with great tastes. Traffic flows one way around the Capitol and if you don't stop along the way it's about a 30 minute stroll.

The market - on a Saturday from 6am to 2pm - surrounds the perimeter of the Capital on a mostly shady road. There is a large variety of stalls selling produce, honey, bakery goods and various refreshments as well as flowers. I expected more arts and crafts type stalls as there are very few. There are some interesting musical offerings as you walk through the market. In one street close the market, they were prepping for a loud street festival. In another, they were celebrating Indian independence day with Bollywood music and on an opposite corner an old man was playing a violin. As we left the market in the early afternoon, several wedding parties were converging on the Capitol and its expanse of lawn and trees, for wedding photos.

This is a great way to start a Saturday morning. Lots of variety and everything is affordable and very tasty. Even the kids will enjoy this.

We've been to the Farmers Market a few times and always find something new to try, and lots of stuff to bring home. Definitely will visit Madison Farmer's Market again,

You cannot go wrong hitting this market. Tons of great stuff. Produce, crafts, honey, food to eat on the go, fresh meats. It was quite the spectacle.

Not only is the Farmers Market a wonderful place to purchase so many different items...but it is also a great experience even if you do not buy a thing! But I dare you to leave there without a purchase...it would be incredibly difficult!

This is where I try to get all of my vegetables from in the summer! Aside from vegetables, there is a vast array of things that are available. From honey, bakery items, cheese, etc, you can expect delicious local options at a fair price.
The best time to go is earlier in the morning around 8am. Otherwise, you will hit the rush.
The farmer's market runs from 6am until around 1pm on Saturdays during the summer and fall.
If you are in Madison for the weekend, head on down to the Capitol Square and enjoy the Farmer's Market.

Outdoors Spring through Fall and then indoors, the Dane County Farmers Market is a must-see (and buy) tradition in Madison. Be sure to visit the Hook's Cheese tent along the Pinckney Street side of the Capitol Square for some of the finest cheese anywhere!

By far the best farmers market I have experienced besides St. Paul. Second time visiting I felt a little more comfortable with browsing. I went in May and now August. I support Hmong farmers at this market. They tend to have great stuff and great prices. Plus they negotiate if you try. Highlights the bee man and Stella's. Bee man has raw and unfiltered honey for $2. Stella's because of the hype. Downfall. No security . It is safe but seems weird.

A great time. Parking is terrible but very worth it. I love going to the farmers market. It is a beautiful walk around the court house with so many things to see. Definitely a great way to spend a few hours of your morning.

So many local businesses. Sad we weren't able to purchase many fresh items due to having no where to store them but it was a fun environment and we had perfect weather to browse the tents!

I just love markets. And this one was really good. Lokal food. Lokal people. Great atmosphere. As a turist I could't by much but I did get a great lokal fresh lunch

The farmer's market offers a great selection There is a wide selection of baked goods, fruits and vegetables, meats, maple syrup, flowers, and of course Wisconsin cheese and more. It makes for a very wide selection of goods and great people watching. Great way to spend a Saturday morning.

If you're in the area on a Saturday morning, do yourself a favor and visit the Madison Farmer's Market on the square in downtown Madison. Grab a coffee at one of the multiple local coffee shops, then take a nearly shoulder-to-shoulder waddle around the Capitol building (the official speed is less than 1/4 mile per hour). Snack on the best cheese, pastries, and pick up some organic local produce. When you're done, or if you want to take a break from waddling, pop into the Capitol building for an amazing view. The Capitol is particularly fantastic on a hot day.
I recommend parking at any local ramp on the outer loop. It will pay to find the ramps on Google Maps ahead of time if you're not familiar with the area. Locate the entrances on Street View as many market-goers don't realize there are often multiple entrances to each ramp. My preference is for ticketed ramps and not the metered ramps. Parking is extremely cheap in Madison compared to other large cities, including Milwaukee.
Another fun addition is to rent a B-Cycle bike and cruise down State Street, an amazing way to see the downtown area. You'll see them everywhere and rentals are very simple.

I'm a huge fan of a great farmer's market. Luckily happened to arrive in Madison before the market closed on Saturday. Setup is surrounding the Capitol on all four sides, so there's a ton of vendors to see.
Highlights: several great cheese vendors, GORGEOUS flowers, lots of produce variety (including some more unusual varieties of chiles and produce popular in Asian cuisines), several bakers, meat vendors, and gourds.
We ate our way through the meat, cheese, and baked goods, thoroughly enjoying the trip. Didn't purchase produce as we were in a hotel, but lots of great options if you're local or staying a while. If you're in town during the summer/early fall on a Saturday, highly recommend a visit.

I've been going to the farmers market in Madison now for about 20 years. In that time I've had the chance to visit a number of other markets around the mid west. The Madison market is the biggest and best. A great diversity of people, produce and politics. Since it takes place on the capital square you can be assured that someone will be promoting one political view or another, it's just part of the fabric of the event.
Make sure to take a few minutes to head down to state street for the art fair that pops up there each week in conjunction with the market.
Tips: go early, it starts at 6, but if you make it by 8 it's not too crowded, after 9 it's a bit of a mob scene. You can opt to go late and scoop up some bargains on what remains, but the options thin out pretty quickly.

Multiple vendors, variety of concessions, veggies, cheese, jams, fruits, herbs, etc. Plenty to choose from. Go early and easy access parking, close by. Always plenty of things to choose from.

The market is unique as it requires the owners / growers to sell the produce so you can get a first hand experience while chatting with the farmers

We were delighted by this local Farmer's Market. The selection and prices during early September were fantastic! We wish our local market had such great pricing and choices. The food looked so healthy. They have veggies, cheese (of course), flowers, breads, meats, and lots of friendly people. We heard you could tour the state capital after we had left. It is a cool building. We had a great day in Madison with the market being a highlight. Lucky Madison to have such a great market. Saturday morning only, I think.

There is a great selection of produce, flowers, fresh cheese curds, and bakery items, but it comes with the cost of cramped sidewalks and not a lot of room to move. Bring your own bag and cash to make it trough quicker.

Visited with family while on vacation. The place was packed making it hard to maneuver, however, all the products being offered were fresh and very tasty. Prices varied from stand to stand.
I especially liked the Cheese Empanadas at the Spicy Cheesy Bread stand!
The market is surrounds the Capital building which has great architecture!

I've been going to the Dane County Farmer's Market regularly since I moved to Madison over 15 years ago, and it's never disappointed me.
If you want prime pickins', you need to get there early (7am or earlier), but even those who like to sleep in a little should have no problem finding all sorts of tasty seasonal things to eat all summer long.
I challenge myself and find something I don't eat regularly to try out at least a few times a summer.
Raw fruits and veggies are the norm, but there are also a number of meat vendors, many with baked goods and preserves, dried seasonings, and a couple honey vendors as well. At the top of State Street, there are also a number of art and craft vendors with beautiful, handmade wares for you to purchase (I was one of them for six years!) - from jewelry and glasswork to handmade soaps and clothing.
The crowds can get a bit crazy, especially during peak hours, so don't plan on trying to push a stroller or large cart through the main thoroughfare (your fellow shoppers will thank you, and your frustration level will drop exponentially.)
The market officially closes at 2pm, but don't plan on going late -- most farmers are sold out of their goods and packing up by a bit after 1pm, depending on weather and crowds.

The family liked to view all the people and different foods. The donuts were huge! Down side was that the sidewalks needed to be bigger as it was very crowded.

Love the Madison Farmers market. We bought a ton of veggies. Also you have to buy cheese curds. We bought jam and maple syrup.

What a great way to spend a Saturday Morning! Definitely recommend the hot cheese bread or spinach epinada from Stellas, and just a couple stand down from them is fresh from the farm cottage cheese, which is out of this world.....Buy 2, because the first container will be gone by Sunday night!

By far the most wonderful farmer's market I have visited. Get there early to beat the crowds and for the most amazing flower bouquets for $5. The selection of veggies was also wonderful.

Best farmers market! We visit Madison often to see family and the farmers market is a must do. Good eats, beautiful flowers, fun crafts, etc.

Best Farmers Market I was ever at. It has a bit of everything and at fantastic prices. Stop at Hooks to get great cheese and the bouquets of flowers are beautiful. Great way to start off a Saturday in this fantastic city!

We spend a beautiful fall morning walking around the Capital enjoying the Farmer's Market; wonderful selection of fall produce and flowers; and of course, cheese and bakery items. Also bought a wonderful local yarn presented by the producer. Also found wooden products and jewelry, but locally crafted and reasonably priced.
Plenty of parking nearby,

Did a somewhat quick tour as it was starting to pour. A wide variety of beautiful produce (some things I haven't seen before) and farm fresh meats, honey, maple syrup, etc. This is not a craft fair. The prices were great and especially the beautiful bouquets for sale were a bargain!

We love the Madison Farmer's Market. The vendors, the crowd, the setting, and the ambience are all perfect. From the first market in the spring to the last market in the fall, there is always something for everyone. From fresh flowers to plants, cheeses, fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, and, of course treats, anything and everything can be found. It is a locavore's dream! We have been to markets all over the country and around the world, and this is one of the very best to be found. Visit and you will understand.

I lived in Madison for 6 years, and the Farmer's market was a favorite activity. There's something for everyone - fresh fruits and veggies, flowers, baked goods, cheese (with free samples), and of course the hot and spicy cheese bread. If you live in Madison, consider opening a CSA with one of the farms, and you can pick your veggies up after exploring the market.
Be prepared to walk quite slowly, and consider making a full loop before purchasing anything. You can often find the same item for less at a different stand. Also note that pets are not allowed except service animals. Bring some water and a hat to beat the heat, and enjoy the experience!

The Saturday-morning Madison Farmers' Markets are renowned for the variety and quality of food that is available. In addition to staples such as lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and green beans, you can find meat sticks, pastries, exotic vegetables, flowers, honey, and pickles. I especially like the large variety of peppers later in the season, as well as the many different kinds of greens. When they are ripe, you can find heirloom tomatoes and apples--even smoked fish. There are dozens of vendors, who-if they are not too busy--are willing to offer cooking suggestions. Some people come early (7:00 to 8:00 A.M.) to avoid the crowds; others arrive later (around noon) to see if they can pick up bargains. This is one of the largest and best farmers' markets in the country and well worth a visit. It also a great place for candid photography and people watching. It is also a great place to have breakfast or lunch. (Capital Square is ringed with cafes and restaurants.)

Lots of veggies to choose from, some breakfast options and just the place you want to be at on Sat mornings.

I LOVE the Madison Farmer's Market. Now, I will warn you... it is crowded. So if you don't like crowds, this event might not be for you. Other than that, this is a great weekly happening that brings the community together around fresh food, cool plants and funky food trucks.
It really is a must-see if you are visiting Madison!

I live in Madison and we have visited the Madison Farmer's Market on numerous occasions. This market is well worth your time and effort. It is true that parking can be a hassle but just be patient and you will be fine. The market is very large and has hundreds of vendors of all kinds. They give out many free samples so you can actually fill up on your visit around the square! Madison is a very beautiful city and I'm sure you will enjoy your visit! The cheese here is incredible.

Madison Farmer's Market is always a pleasure way to start your Saturday. we start with coffee and walk the street. first things you impression with is the clean area and the quite and polite way the crowd and the farmers create. usually "market" means load and intensity but here is the perfect combination that create this calm atmosphere. the food is always fresh and in great presentation

Farmer's market in Madison occurs every Saturday morning 8-1. It surrounds the State Capitol Building. The largest farmer's market I have seen. Seasonal organic fruits and vegetables, grass fed beef, cheeses, baked goods and more. Plus musicians and as always a bit of Madison politics. Always friendly sellers and customers.

This is a real farmers market-produce, fresh baked goods, flowers, meats, cheeses, etc. Not someone selling imported clothing, resale clothing, etc that I have seen in some cities. Crowded, even on a cool drizzly late October morning.

Was surprised by the number of vendors wrapping around the state capital. Wonderful selection of vegetables, flowers, cheeses, sausages, honey, baked goods.

This is one of my favorite places to stroll. Venders are rich with vegetables, fruits, honey, popcorn, meats , flowers, cheeses, breads, pastries and any other food item you can imagine. We go hungry and feast on hot cheesy bread, fruit, and coffee. We also buy enough to get through the week and freeze or can. Surrounding the Wisconsin capitol, it is great for people watching. This truly is one of the best farmer's markets in the country.

Hilariously so Wisconsin.
Everyone walks in one big square in the same direction.
Bought some silver queen corn...ate it last night...so good.
Bought some Canna bulbs and a Dahlia, all the flowers were high quality.

Great Market and we enjoyed the visit. Recommend it highly a must see when in Madison. Go and you will not be disappointed

Took out of town guests to the free Veterans Museum right across the street from the market. Good variety and a lot of it! Rainy day? Take your umbrella!

From the vegetable grower to the beef raiser to the flower vendor to the jewelry maker...they are all at the famous Saturday Morning Farmers Market on the Square. Here's what's funny about this one: People go around the Capitol Square (with the beautiful Capitol Building in the middle) and STOP when someone ahead of them stops. Kind of hilarious except that you'd expect that here...it's Wisconsin Nice. People from elsewhere have marveled at the lack of pushing and shoving. We all just go around like sheep, enjoying the view, the people-watching, and the interesting zucchini in front of us. Gotta love Madison, gotta love Wisconsin. We will love you too, so come on and join us. Buy some honey or a bouquet of radishes or some perfect pumpkins, depending on the season. Just get here. Because it's an experience. It will make you smile.

The Madison Farmer's Market is an experience you won't soon forget! It is the largest market I've ever seen and they do not lack in variety of wares to sell and even taste test. The setting (the Capitol lawn) is gorgeous! I must warn you that the crowd is equally as impressive! If you have children, go early. As the crowd grows, it can be overwhelming for children, not to mention a challenge to hang on to them. It's an experience you must do once while in Madison, but that one experience will suffice for a lifetime.

If you want to go to an artisanal farmers' market this is the place for you. Despite the somewhat high prices this is still one of the better farmers' market in the US but if I lived here I could not imagine doing much shopping here on a regular basis. Too crowded and a narrow selection of products offered. Though there is a good selection of fresh cheese curds.
Make sure that you walk counter clockwise around the Square or you will be given the stink eye!

Get there early for the best selection. There are lots of selection: fresh produce, flowers, cheese and food vendors. Plenty of crafts and plenty to eat. Wear comfortable shoes and bring cash.

Stopped in today and it was really nice. Glad we decided to visit and I would recommend for anyone to visit as it’s a good way to kill time before a football game on Saturday.

The place to be on a Saturday morning in summer. Go early or late if you don't like crowds BUT crowd watching is part of the fun! You can buy fresh produce and other foods PLUS have an elephant ear and coffee for breakfast!

We have ben dedicated shoppers at the Madison Farmers' Market ever since they opened up, several decades ago. In season, there is no other venue where you can purchase such a variety of fruits and vegetables, home grown in Wisconsin. Some of the tomatoes and red peppers that you see there are not even available in supermarkets, which specialize in 'industrial produce' that are grown to last several weeks, but are tasteless. Prices, however, are on the steep side, especially when you consider that the money goes straight to the farmer, and not to the store owner and other intermediaries, as is the case with supermarkets.

While there are great vendors and produce available here, this venue is SO crowded that it takes 2 hours to get around the square. And forget about trying to sample the foods that are offered, there are so many people standing squarely in front of those booths gorging themselves that one can't get near.
Then there are the parents who think their strollers (even double wide on the sidewalk) are for their purchases. If your kid is walking, leave the stroller at home for pities sake!
If I lived in the area, I would go at the very earliest hour possible and run away as soon as possible (before the tourists get there).

Flowers, fresh and organic produce, meats, cheeses, jams, baked goods line the entire Capitol square. Street performers including dancers, musicians, and artists add to the fun. Great food carts too! Something for everyone and all at fantastic prices.

I love to go to the summer Farmer's market on the square. It has great items ranging from edibles to plants. Fresh bread is there also. On Wednesday a min market is held on MLK in front of the city county building.

This is by far the best Farmers Market. The whole square surrounding the Capitol has vendors selling their goods. Fresh vegetables, flowers, plants, baked goods, popcorn and many other items. A must see when in Madison. We will definitely be back!

Go early. This is one of the biggest that we have encountered in all our US travels, and probably the loveliest setting, in the square around the beautiful WI state capitol building. Parking is a nightmare though. Lots of metered parking, but much of it is 25 minute or one hour max, some 2 hour max, but all must be paid even on Saturdays. They are also starting a Sunday market, so perhaps parking and crowds will not be so bad then. If you are willing to walk 4-6 blocks and are lucky, you might find free all day parking. There are also parking garages, but that was not an option for is in a small RV. Plenty of food vendors, produce, soaps, meats, etc and on the perimeter are food trucks of every description. Don't eat before you go so you cam eat there! The vendors must vacate the streets by 2:00, so many start to pack up at 1:0O, some even 12:30. Fo see the capitol building afterwards...free tours.

Whether you want to sample breads or buy plants, this is the place to be on a Saturday morning in the summer. You'll probably have to find parking a few blocks away and walk, or use the city ramps (if not full). This is a very popular offering in Madison. We like to take the grandkids; they like to pick out and sample things along the way.

Great vendors with delicious farm grown foods. Veggies, cheese, honey and meats that make for a great sight and stroll around the Capitol. Only gave it a four because depending on when you go, the crowds are huge.

So much to offer from our local farmers! They have cheese, flowers, plants/herbs, honey, hot sauces, meat, bakery items, veggies, jellies, freshly made kettle corn and the list goes on! To market right, you should start with a cup of coffee in hand and bring a backpack or bag for all your goodies. If you go early, it's one of the best ways you can start your Saturday. After 8:30/9 it gets too congested to enjoy and there are a lot of groups who organize to share their opinions, political view points and other randomness- in my opinion takes away from the market experience. Once we've made the rounds and gathered up our goodies, (Stella's Hot Spicy Cheese Bread is a must), we cop a squat on the capital lawn and enjoy eating some good/fresh food and people watching.

One of the largest independent farmers markets in the country. You can eat your way around the market while enjoying great people watching. Best way to start a Saturday morning. If you can, avoid the peak time between 10:30 and11am.

We went to the Dane County Farmers Market on the Saturday of a Badger's game. There was a lot of parking available, and the crowds weren't so heavy. The market is the largest one we've been to, and offers many good options.

Absolutely wonderful. The quality of the produce is amazing and the flowers are unbelievable. Everyone is so friendly. It's best to get there as early as you can for the best selection. It can get pretty crowded towards the end but that's because they have so much to offer. I will be going back to the's market every chance I get!

It was nice to take in the Capitol as we walked around it & checked out the vendors made 2 laps we got there when it opened so the crowd wasn't bad at all. Lots of fresh produce to choose from, many cheese stands, many honey stands, lots of bread to choose from , flowers galore if that's what your looking for, many apple stands. It was good but my local Waukesha or Brookfield has more variety of different things to choose from this had a lot of repetition of stuff. I think I have it good living where my local one. It is nice to check out others though.

this is by far the best farmer's market I've ever seen! Such a variety of produce, flowers, crafts and local delicacies. Every time I go I want to load up on everything! Unfortunately, I am just a visitor and can't, maybe a good thing. We make a point of going every time we visit, there is something for everyone! Don't miss it if you are in the area!

As you work your way counter clockwise around the Capitol square, don't go the wrong way, there are amazing food and flower vendors. Plenty of cheese to sample! Don't go home without some fresh cheese curds that squeak when you bite them. Bring a small cooler with an ice pack to bring home a variety of local cheeses at great prices. It's hard to stop buying all the aged cheddars and really awesome Danish blue cheese.
Really good prices on the flower bouquets. Our daughter had her wedding flowers provided by one of the local vendors.
A great way to spend your morning. Also recommend stopping into one of the great restaurants in the area and don't forget a trip into the state Capitol building.
It is an awesome setting for a farmer's market. The selection of vegetables is outstanding.

Come to Madison just for the Saturday Farmer's Market. Get a coffee and walk the square to see the vendors from flowers to cheese. People watch or engage in conversations.
Vendors spill into State Street as this markets just gets better every year. Great jewelry, crafts, music and food wait for your appearance.
While you are there, visit the state capital. Inside are rest rooms and water fountains.

Visited the Madison Wisconsin Farmers Market on Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. The market is located at the Capital building and encircles the entire block. Stands include, cheeses (of course), meats, flowers, garden plants and spices, soaps and much much more.
Parking is an issue as it is only street parking and many of the meters are for 25 minutes. Sunday and Holidays you won't need to feed meters but regardless, get there early or you'll be spending your time looking for parking and fighting the crowd.

wonderful atmoshere and great selection of veggies. great cheese at good prices. many things to look at and buy nice health products

Madison's downtown farmers market is a must do for anyone visiting in Madison. Come and experience a large farmers market for yourself. Vendors are so friendly and always happy to answer your questions. Its also a great place to people watch if that is more your thing. The products are of good quality and fresh. There is also a huge assortment of vendors here so no matter what you may be looking for you may just well find it at this farmers market. If you would rather not deal with the crowd, come to the one of Wednesday's on Martin Luther King Drive as it is a bit smaller and not nearly as crowded.

I've been going to this market since 1980. It's wonderful and full of surprises. Extensive produce and products, all grown and/or made in Wisconsin. It takes place around the Capital Square in Madison. The walking time on a Saturday morning could be as long as two hours or even more if you are a serious shopper/looker. The only drawback to this market is that it is crowded not only with regular area shoppers but also with a lot of tourists. It's hard to walk around if you don't get there at an ungodly early hour in the morning on Saturday. The Wednesday market is an abbreviated version of the Saturday market. Much smaller but still good. I always take out-of-town visitors to the Saturday market. I go with visitors, friends, or alone, depending on who is around.

We randomly stumbled across this market on a road trip with mixed feelings and ended up leaving with bags of cheese, honey and other gifts and goodies. Live music, great little venders and everything you would expect from a farmers market. A little crowded but no big deal.

An amazing walk around Madison's beautiful capital square. But get there early and by that I mean 7:30/8:00. After that the crowd gets unbearable and moves slower and slower until there is no movement at all because some millenial thinks it's cute to stop right in the middle of the walkway with her/his giant baby buggy only to gaze at the sky for whatever reason--I don't know. The moral of my comment is, if you don't like crowds, go early and have breakfast afterwards.

I love the market, however it is very very crowed after 9:30-10 am. Good prices, decent variety of products.

This really is the greatest farmers market, on all four blocks around the capital are filled. If you don't like crowds, get there early, by ten you have to walk slowly and go with the rhythm of the crowd. There are baked goods for sale and lots to see. Best to bike, bus or cab downtown, parking is challenging for Madison.

We took two trips around, one to look and sample, a second to purchase. We got there around 7am, some of the vendors were still setting up and the vendors on state Street got there around our second spin. Lots of cheese, meats, veggies. Some prices were great other just so-so. Definitely worth it. Loved the flowers!

The Dane Co Farmers Market has all the benefits of an average farmer's market - local food, local people, etc - but also the buzz and excitement (and crowds) of an "event".
If you're going for the take-home, grocery-type food that is the standard at all farmer's markets, I suggest you go early - before 9 am.
If you're going to experience Madison, then you can go any time. Aside from grocery food there's plenty of ready-to-eat food that makes for a great breakfast or brunch. There's also coffee stands and several stands sell juice or cider. So come hungry and stay awhile. Capitol Square connects to State street, which is another local Madison attraction, and both are generally hoppin' during the Farmer's Market.

Dane County Farmer’s Market
The Dane County Farmer’s Market is a gastronomic event, a phenomenon, an experience you can’t help but enjoy. Thousands of people will come out on a Saturday morning to troop counter-clockwise around the square. (Yes, it has to be counter-clockwise or you’ll annoy everyone.) And believe it or not, you will find some fresh produce this early in the season. Some of the farmers have covered beds or even greenhouses to bring things in ahead of the normal growing season. There was a one-sheet inserted in the Wisconsin State Journal for Apr 13 that gives you an excellent list of what is in season. It also has a list of all 24 of the farmer’s markets in the county and the days they’re open. By the way, this is one of the only markets that requires people to produce what they sell.
An overview:
The main event is almost three hundred producers from around the state. They will set up their stands around the “inside” of the Capitol Square come rain or come shine. Our market is unique in that the marketers are all required to sell only what they produce. They can’t have stuff shipped in from elsewhere to sell.
The four corners of the square are usually occupied with political groups intent on getting you to see their way. Fortunately, even though our politics are usually rough, they are usually quite civil and will leave you alone unless you engage them. The outer circle is across the street from the marketers. This is catching on as a place for street musicians and performers. Some folks are showing up in onesies and twosies to sell popcorn, hot dogs, etc. as well. They tend to be scattered all around the square. The State Street corner is the busiest of the peripheral vending areas. Artists, potters, jewelers, and others set up booths to sell their wares. This group is getting larger every year and is starting to spread down State Street.
I say “rain or shine” advisedly. A few producers will go home but many of them have tarps and awnings to protect their wares and their customers. Lightning and severe wind will drive everyone away, though.
What days:
Rain or shine, Dane County Farmer’s Market in 2016 will open on Saturday, April 16 and run every Saturday until early November. Their secondary market will run every Wednesday from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm in front of the courthouse on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard during the same months.
What time:
If you are intent on getting the finest produce, flowers, starter plants, bakery, etc., you should show up early. While they open at 6:00 am, part of that time is setting up their stalls so 7 am is probably a good time for your shopping. If you are there to browse and impulse buy, it’s OK to come later. My wife and I usually show up around 8 in the morning because part of that is dragging me out of bed on a Saturday. The official market hours are 6:00 am to 2:00 pm. By noon, most of the best produce and flowers have been picked over and the crowds are beginning to dwindle a little.
What you’ll find:
Produce of all kinds – and not just the common stuff. You’ll even find some out of the ordinary things if you’re on your toes. Then there’s bakery. You can eat your way around the square. There is honey, jams, jellies, and all sorts of preserves – all of this sold by the people who made it. You’ll also find some of the finest beef, bison, pork, chicken, and fish in the state. There are also the plants: houseplants, hanging plants, bedding plants – you want it, they’ll grow it. On the last weekend in May, my wife and I are always down there early so she can get her heirloom tomato plants (six to ten varieties). We haven’t missed once in the last fifteen or so years. My wife will have planned out what plants to get this year and the farmer always has something new to try out. She’ll be lucky to come home with half of the varieties she planned on and eager to try out the new varieties the farmer had for her.
How to be hated:
Push a stroller or pull a wagon. I’m a big person and hard to miss but I hate to tell you how many times I’ve been hit by careless stroller drivers or wagon pullers. People are so busy looking at the display tables that they aren’t watching where they’re going much less what they are pushing or pulling. The double wide, or double long strollers are particularly irksome; so are strollers with screaming, tantrum throwing kids. And did I mention bicycles? Really? In a crowd of thousands?
How to save your arms:
Bring an empty backpack to hold your purchases instead of a stroller or wagon. My pack has straps on the outside for sleeping bags and other camping gear. They are very handy for hanging bags of purchases that won’t fit in the pack itself. The vendors will be happy to hang your purchases on your own back if you are alone. Or, if you are cunning, you can bring your spouse along as a pack animal. When my wife goes for her heirloom tomato purchases I’ll usually have a full pack festooned with 5 or 6 bags hanging on the outside.
Where the bathrooms are:
The Capitol opens its doors every Saturday for the public. Be forewarned!! It can be a bit of a hike, so plan ahead.

Took wife here. Always a treat. This Saturday was very cold and windy for 1st weekend in November (just had 8 inches of snow) so crowds and vendors down a bit. That being said, to see the mix of earth muffins, students, tourists, locals, and farmers is worth it alone. Then add on the produce, baked goods, meats, and cheeses! O.M.G. 10 days later, as I type this (yes, this Florida boy finally thawed out) I am grawing on beef sticks and cheese curds from there. Had blue popcorn I bought there during the Packer game yesterday!
Just do NOT check your cholesterol for 3 months after visiting Wisconsin!!! ;) Enjoy!

The large Saturday farmers' market on the grounds of the state capitol building highlights the state's agricultural products with a section devoted to crafts. Pleasant to peoplewatch and wander with the crowds even if you don't purchase.

One of my favorite places to go on Saturday in Summer. Its one of the best Farmer's Market I've even been to AND in Madison area. Come early and come hungry. There's plenty of good food and plenty of space to sit and enjoy your food. Bring family. Buy some good quality vegetables. Check out my video reviews on YouTube Channel. Link in my profile.

The streets that surround the capital building is the stage for the farmers market. There is great fresh veggies, hormone free meats , Wisconsin cheese, fresh bread, wonderful fresh flowers to name a few items. There is a lot of people but the market is well worth the visit. There are a lot of great places to eat. Check it out.

We visit the outdoor Madison Farmers' Market nearly every Saturday during the season. You will find a tremendous variety of locally grown and produced items, everything from the expected asparagus, tomatoes, apples and squash, to specialty items such as heirloom fruits and vegetables, exotic mushrooms and asian vegetables, and multiple varieties of garlic. Plus local chicken, beef, pork, sausage, trout, bacon, eggs, syrup, jam and jelly, pasta, and of course delicious CHEESE. All kinds of fresh baked goods, both sweet and savory: bread, cookies, pies, biscotti and empanadas. The market is also a visual treat, with vendors vying for most beautiful display and many types of plants and flowers for sale, all around the beautiful state Capitol, lawns and gardens. Surrounding the market there are more vendors selling a variety of wares and great coffee and tea to go with the scone you just bought. You will enjoy the Farmers' Market - bring lots of bags!

We loved our morning just circling the market, sampling cheese, smelling herbs, people watching and of course, buying fresh food!

Lots of interesting vendors, music and food. A Wisconsin tradition. Street musicians of all sorts of types and flavors adds to the fun of the experience

This was definitely one of the largest farmer's markets I have ever seen. My son brought me here for the experience and to buy cheeses, crackers, fruits, and vegetables for two picnics we were planning to take that week.

So this is undoubtedly one of the best places to get produce in or around Madison.
Here are the cons/stuff you need to be mentally prepared for:
1. EVERYONE knows this is the best place to get produce. There is a mob. It's a polite, considerate and overall well mannered mob that moves steadily and makes room for people who join late or who linger at a booth, but it's a lot. of. people. in very close quarters.
2. Serveral booths are similar. This makes sense because it is a producer only farmers market, and different farmers may be farming similar things. But these similar booths are priced differently.
3. There are essentially no returns. So either you get there early enough to check out all the booths, and buy on the second circumlocation, or you resign yourself to a bad deal here and there -- but I will remark that I have never had a BAD purchase, merely a more expensive one than it had to be. Which, when you think about produce and how many ways it can go wrong, is remarkable in itself.
For one circle about, without the crowd, estimate about 40 minutes. For with the crowd, more like an hour or an hour and 10 minutes. For two, double that. For food, add about 30 minutes to the trip.
There are several food/pastry/breakfast type booths. These have enormous lines because a) they are delicious b) eating from them is part of the experience. If you want the complete experience, by all mean stand in line. If not, shop, and then walk to one of the several excellent breakfast/brunch places within reach and eat there.

There's nothing like eating a scone and some cheese before tailgating for a Badgers game. The square around the capitol is great on Saturday mornings. Everyone is wearing Badgers red and the vendors are incredibly friendly.

This market (usually held on the Capital grounds) was held in the senior citizen's center because we visited in the early spring and it was snowing. Many vendors were there with a large selection of cheese, fresh produce and baked goods. Music was provided by two bands-----one band played Cajun music!! Great way to spend a Saturday morning!!

The market spans the scenic Capitol square and is packed with produce, bakery, cheese, meats and more from Spring to late Fall. It is a happening place, so getting there early in the morning is advised. This is a great place to people watch, meet friends and shop for top notch products.

Madison's Farmer's Market has everything you could possibly want in a market,
including herb plants, flowering plants, veggies, bakery, honey, jam, seasonal fruit, the list goes on.
Off the Square in the 100 block of State Street a few vendors sell crafts and often there is live music.
Warning: it does get crowded, so go early, 7:00 am or enjoy the "stroll" thru the market which is on all 4 sides of the Capitol.

We enjoyed this farmer's market, and would have bought lots of things except we were traveling by air. So we settled for consumable items that we could eat up right there. We went on a gorgeous sunny day in October, and it was crowded, but if you went with the foot traffic flow, it was fine. We stayed in a hotel that was walkable to the market, so didn't have to worry about parking.

I'm enjoyed a variety of fresh foods. Many good cheeses, fresh milk and juice, organic vegetables,...etc, Like the feeling of market, good location and beautiful scene of the Capital building and church behind.

Limited to WI products, you will find seasonal produce, honey, jerky, cheese, clothing, artworks and snacks. Great for people watching

Phenomenal variety all summer long. Only downside is the dense crowd on nice days. Go early! Don't miss Hook's cheese, the great coffee and croissants outside Graze restaurant, and awesome selection at Ela''s Apples.

can be busy but so worth it, sit on the lawn take a break and people watch. All the booths are great I usually alway get the cheesy bread from stellas ..its warm and amazing. Everyone is friendly ..please at least go once for the experience

I just going to shop the farmers market. Can never get there enough. Nothing like drinking a coffee, buying some fresh bakery or fresh cheese curds, some honey, maybe beautiful flowers, fruits or veggies. I'm sure I'm missed some wonderful things. Always beautiful walking around the square and maybe step into our beautiful State Capitol.

Wonderful farmers market! Lots of parking in ramps and lots surrounding the capital for $5. Be patient and keep an eye out for all sorts of great produce, cheese and hand made items.

I love Farmer's Markets and this one is great. Nice variety and something for everyone. We bought mini pies on our last visit and they were so good. Everyone is friendly and pleasant. Monroe is a wonderful downtown and so is their Farmer's Market. Definitely worth a visit. You will not be disappointed.

Something free to do in the city and there were TONS of booths. We loved how you always knew where the good stuff was because of the crowds around that booth. Music on every corner. We bought honey, spicy cheese bread and taste tested hot cheese. It only took us 45 minutes to finish the loop to see all the booths.

Our first visit to the market and would definitely return. Many local vendors with awesome produce. It was hard to limit my purchases

Fun Saturday morning thing to do. Very very busy! Don't go if you like to walk fast! Dogs are allowed ONLY in the street or the outside circle of the square. Dogs are also allowed on State St. Downtown Madison is the best!

I really enjoyed my outing. There were so many organic vendors to buy from but since I was flying home I couldn't take advantage of them all.

Best farmer's market around. You can also tour the Capital as part of the experience. Sample the fare, buy the great produce. It is amazing!

Went to the market on opening day. It was huge with lots of great options. They have the flow going one way, and tthe first leg was definitely the most crowded. As you keep going it's less crowded and prices are generally lower.

We did not expect much because it was mid October but we’re pleasantly surprised by the number of “booths” occupied and still selling late in the season

One of the best farmers markets in the country. A pleasant walk around the capitol square while vueing wonderful local grown produce, flowers, and meats localy grown.

A must take in event even if you are not wanting to buy the outstanding produce, incredible flowers, exquisite jewelry, and more. I encourage one lap around the square to take everything into account and then a second slow walk to enjoy the Wisconsin food offerings. You will be amazed at how many people attend this family friendly Saturday event.
Go early if you want to beat the sure to be crowded walk!

The Madison Farmers market is over the top. First all the food is grown within the state, no bananas, oranges, crafts, etc. It's about the farmers food from their fields to your table. Second, it is on the grounds of the State Capital. You can walk through the Capital, use the facilities and marvel at its beauty. Third, it's the food!!!!!!!!! IT is a must if you are in Madison on a Saturday during the summer.

Refreshing to see on a saturday morning. Lots of colour smell and sights of produce. Samples offered by vendors to try. Not hard to be coaxed to buy fair and reasonble priced products and produce.

Of course the farmers and food are great but the experience is not. Too many people, too many choices make me crazy. The crowding is insane, if the weather is nice you just end up shuffling along in a whole packed line of people, very unpleasant. It's like it's not about the wonderful food anymore, it's about the experience. Just way too big, I'd prefer a smaller market with about 10-15 vendors max like the ones I've been to in other cities or even the other ones around town.

The food choices and people watching are great -- but be prepared for crowds. If you want to shop (as in get your veggies and supplies) -- get there early. If you want to stroll and nosh, then later is OK.

We were walking around the downtown area and ran into this. It was really nice - but really crowded so be prepared. U fortunately we were traveling so we weren't in a position to buy any vegetables or cheese or anything but it looked great. We were able to buy and sample some good snacking stuff as we wandered through and some of the baked goods were outstanding. If I lived in the area, this would be a regular visit!

Even though it is extremely crowded it is worth the trip for some of the finest locally grown food and flowers in the country. There are strict guidelines for vendors. This event cannot be beat. Crowd watching is amazing and the smell of fresh coffee brewing will keep you going round and round the square. It may get a little political at times, with some people pushing but this is Madison. You will go home with fresh fruit and vegetables that cannot be beat. Maybe a little crowded for small children as the morning wears on.

For the second year in a row, we went home empty handed from the Farmer's Market. We joked that it was because we came prepared with a cooler and ice packs from the Milwaukee area. The radishes weren't big enough. The emu place was set up but no one was there. There wasn't any goat. Many things were very over-priced. We did stop at Stella's and I got a gooey sweet roll and my husband got a small hot and spicy cheesy roll at Stellas. Mine was delicious and his was a little dry. But despite the disappointments, it is still fun to see all the food, the colorful, friendly vendors and the shoppers. It's great people watching. It was a gorgeous morning and we were there before 7am and it was already busy even though some of the vendors were still setting up.

A fun place to visit if you are near the capitol on a Saturday. The vendors are lined up on the square surrounding the Capitol Building. Mostly fresh produce, some meat, cheeses, and baked goods. Have to try Stella's Cheese Bread, it's warm and delicious!

Great start to a weekend! You can browse all the stands with free samples! Please don't be the person that just goes for samples without intentions of buying!

We've been fans of this farmers market for 30 years. How we have missed it since we moved away about 10 years ago. In town for a wedding, this was a must on our list of places to visit "for old time's sake." Although getting there early is very helpful if you don't like crowds, we got there about 11 am and found a literal river of people. But everyone is polite and helpful, so the slow walk around was pleasant and a good part of it is in the shade! The booths were spectacular whether you were searching for produce, plants, cut flowers, or a snack. The market actually surrounds the entire capitol building on all four sides. We usually made it a point to take a quick detour into the capitol for a refreshing, soul enriching break, which we did once again. We couldn't keep any produce, unfortunately, but we did bring home a charming bouquet of dried flowers. Many people even stopped and asked me where we had bought it as we were wending our way around the Capitol Square. I've never seen another farmer's market to compare.

This is a really fun experience to see so many vendors wrapped around the Wisconsin Capitol on Saturday morning. Things you can find include vegetables, fruits, flowers, herbs, plants, cheese, honey, baked stuff, soaps, and some craft artworks. This is also a good place for people watching on Saturday morning: locals, visitors, parents with kids on the strollers, runners, students, and activists are all packed on the sidewalk. Some even have picnic on the grass. Visiting this lovely, vivid and colorful farmer's market on a sunny day is definitely one of the most enjoyable thing to start your weekend.

We always stop at the farmer’s market if we’re in Madison on a Saturday! So much produce, bakery, flowers, and more! Usually pretty busy so can be hard to shop

This farmers market is one of the largest and most diverse in the region. It has local produce, flowers, and food. Check the local calendar to find special weekends for various events like the art on the square. Get to the farmers market early (before 9) to beat the crowds then enjoy one of the great brunch places on the square.

The best farmers market. So much to choose from. You always find something new. Love it. If you don't want to hit the crowd go early or just before it closes.

The farmers market has decent produce, but is overpriced and all stands are similar. The pastry and bread stands are a treat and the areas around it are gorgeous with the Capitol right there. The art stands are almost more worth it then the produce.

The Farmer's Market on Madison's Capitol Square is always worth a couple hours of your time on a Saturday morning. Fresh veggies, meats, bakery items, flowers, plants and a great place for "People Watching". Bring a cloth shopping bag or two and just wander along with the crowd. Take your time. Relax. And pick up some of the freshest foods you'll find anywhere. If you want to shop a little more quickly, with a smaller crowd, arrive on The Square earlier...like at 7 AM. And check out the array of food carts along the way. Madison's Farmers Market is a real treat and not to be missed whether you're in town for a weekend or a whole week. I live in Madison and the Farmers Market is a very regular stop for me and my friends.

The Madison Farmer's Market held on the Capitol Square each Saturday morning from mid-April through the first week in November, is the largest producer-only farmers' market in the U.S.
For most visitors it is probably more about noshing some pastries, gawking at some of the crowd and just plain socializing with others in an absolutely beautiful setting, than it is about buying veggies for the week.
Returning to Madison for an all-to-brief visit, there was no way that we could miss this signature event. We prefer to start early, ridiculously early, shortly after the 6:15 opening of the market. The market is open until 1:45, but most of that time the crowds are so huge that we shy away.
In addition to farmers sharing their produce, crafts people sell their wares and local music groups perform for the crowds.
There are also numerous people dedicated to various political or social causes handing out literature and being engaged by members of the public who agree or disagree with the view points being presented. In other words, the market is
democracy in action.
The event is free and open to everyone. There is NO need what-so-ever to pay for a tour of this event.
This is a MUST DO introduction to the wonderful city in which it is held!
We Recommend it MOST HIGHLY.

Great experience! If you are going to the area it is a must do. All kinds of seasonal fruits and veggies. The whole market goes around the whole capital building sidewalk. Plenty of room and good food. Come hungry because there are also all kinds of pastries, cheese and more!! The vendors are all friendly and ready to help and tell their story.

Heard they are not dog friendly to non-service animals. Very crowded- but lovely and many of the same venders are still there from the time when UW was home. Prices are not ridicules. Lots of choices. Red popping corn. But hey- it's the capital- a little K9 civil disobedience with a friendly dog should always be expected in a mad city.

You just cannot beat the Madison Farmer's Market. All products are grown by the vendors themselves, who come from all over the state to sell everything from vegetables, cheese, honey, and plants to breads, gourds and mushrooms. The quality is high, and we rarely leave the square without staggering under a load of fresh stuff. Get there early, as crowds can make the market a challenge by mid-morning. Additionally, many vendors sell out quickly.

This is the best farmers market in the state. Also love street performers and food trucks. The whole square is full.

We were in Madison for graduation and visited the farmers market and had a great time in spite of it being cold and raining. People are friendly and one of the largest farmers markets I've been too. Local shops are open, so there is plenty of shopping available. Absolutely had a great time. Highly recommended for entire family.

The Farmer's Market was a great experience. There is definitely a natural flow to traffic so we just fell in line and walked around the capital once. Easy to go back around a second time if you want to go back for something. Lots of fresh flowers and vegetables. Some baked goods, smoothies, and of course, cheese curds!

First time visiting the market. Can be a little overwhelming but lots to shop at. Would love to come back during peak season and see what other things I could find. Highly recommend!

We had a great time. A hundred vendors. All home grown fruits and vegetables. Most were on the expensive side. The side walks were too small for the number of people. Loved the food we bought. Fun to talk to and see many different people.

One of our favorite Madison things to do. Make sure you bring your walking shoes and a hat. If you don't have much time to spend, then get there early. Check out the great WI cheese and baked goods!

The best part of this was the city shuts down the roads around the capital building and you walk around the square block and shop at various vendors. We came away with a lot of bags of good stuff

On Capital Square Saturday mornings, wide range of organic and fresh vegetables as well as meats and of course many cheese vendors. plan on 1-2 hrs

It's kind of fun to people watch, get a fun snack and be downtown but overall I find it too crowded and the items are expensive. If you get sick of the crowd you can sit on the Capital lawn. It's nice grass and shade. Lots of families will be doing this and the kids enjoy running around.

Head to the Capital Square on Saturday morning from Spring through Fall for fresh produce, meat, fish, cheese, honey, jelly, bakery, plants, flowers, and to enjoy the abiance of shopping around the state capital. Other venders set up at some of the intersections such as State Street selling fresh coffee and other wares, and street musicians add to the atmosphere.

This is a huge farmers market with everything you could wish for. I especially like the cheese curd samples and fresh baked goods. They also have artsy booths on State St.

As an annual visitor to Wisconsin every year, this is one event we never miss. The cheese venders are the highlights for us with plenty of tasty samples. Great fresh vegetables that can be a little pricey. Purchased several products from a Chili stand including dips and dressings that were incredible. Parents that bring their young children should think twice about their children as they certainly don’t seem to be enjoying themselves.

Came looking for something unique, and while all products are local this was a typical farmers market you would find in my hometown. I did get some yummie cheese and jerky. Butch other than that I wouldn't make it a destination.

Totally awesome farmers market. Local goods of every kind imaginable. Huge number of stalls. Great veggies, and the best cheesy bread anywhere (although at new price of $10 a loaf, not such a bargain!). Lots of things to taste, including every kind of squeaky cheese curd imaginable. If you are in Madison on a Saturday in the Fall, it would be a crime to miss this Famers Market!

It is a privilege that the Dane County Saturday Farmer's Market is in Madison, along with all of the other local farmer's markets and winter markets. I love getting to know the local farmers, growers and bakers and buying from them. It adds to my own gratitude practice when I eat my meals. It is a popular event, so be patient with parking and knowing that you will stroll at a gentle pace around the square. Every season there are special treats to enjoy at the Market. I highly recommend a trip if you live near Madison and if you are visiting for the weekend!

Saturdays are the best for the farmers market..Fresh everything.
Plus you get to see the local chefs picking out their produce, meats and cheeses.

I grew up and have lived in the area most of my life but never went to the farmer's market. I'm so glad I finally got a chance to go! I had a great time even though the weather wasn't very good. Great deals and you can meet some rest people in the process. Highly recommended!!!!

The best of urban and rural Wisconsin meet in a cheerful and vibrant atmosphere in downtown Madison. Farmers selling everything from fresh fruits and veggies to home-baked delights to honey or maple syrup to exquisite Wisconsin cheeses and beyond gather on the square to sell their goods to throngs of folk of all sorts and from all over. Local Madisonians enjoy making the Farmer's Market a regular part of their summer routine. For out-of-towners, it's a fantastic way to begin the day - food, family fun, and even some local entertainment - all centrally located making it very easy to enjoy all the quirks and fascinations of downtown Madison, or to travel to anywhere else in the city. Prefer something a little more low key? The Downtown Market may get the most press, but Madison boasts several other markets throughout the city and on various days of the week. Some, like the Hilldale Farmer's Market operate in the winter months as well!

This is one Farmers Market you do not want to miss. They have everything. This Saturday market goes around all of the parameters of the capitol(every street).

We have a fantastic farmers market in my town, but this one blew ours away. DEFINITELY pay it a visit. It goes all the way around the square in front of the capitol.
And, of course, soooo many squeaky cheese curds ;)

The Madison Saturday farmers market around the Capitol Square is something to experience. The variety of produce, cheese, meat, and other foodstuffs, much of it organic and locally produced, is amazing. It's really great for visitors or local foodies; the best stuff is gone by 10 or so, so gotta be there early. Later on, as others have mentioned, the crowds are intense, friendly but slow-moving. For locals, if you're claustrophobic and not into early rising, there are a variety of other, smaller, farmers markets every day at various locales throughout Madison.

Especially before covid, the farmers market is a must do on a saturday morning. The large variety of different produce and crafts can make you spend all day there

This Farmer's Market gives the amazing ones out in California a run. The size, flowers, fresh produce were great. While I am a huge fan of the independant artists, it was nice to not be overwhelmed with crafters and artists and just focus on the "food". Would make a point to come back when driving through town again.

Lots of vendors and a great assortment of products. Vendors are nice. There are fruits, vegetables, flowers, baked goods, prepared food, meats and miscellaneous farm goods. The prices are very reasonable.

This long time market is always worth the trip. Fall is my favorite time to go. Many regular vendors offer a great variety of goods, from produce to pasta to honey and baked goods. It gets crowded as the day progresses. Go early, if you can. If you are in Madison on a Saturday, it should be on your list!

I have been to other farmers markets, Madison's is one of the best. Very diverse mix of vendors and the local exposure is great. Many of the local restaurants can be seen buying for their patrons here as well. An added bonus is it surrounds the Madison capital

I have traveled and lived all over the country for my job. I have been to farmer's markets in each of the 10 cities where I have lived. I thought the Charleston, SC market was the best until I moved here. All selections are not necessarily organic, but the quality of the vegetables is awesome. At least one of the growers must be at each stand every Saturday so you can ask questions of them. They are all very knowledgeable about food preparation, storage, etc. They can also tell you when fruits and vegetables were picked so you know how fresh they are. Much of the selection is duplicated from stand to stand, but there are many unique things like shiitake and oyster mushrooms, beef, pork, chicken, and lamb, jerky, eggs, cheese curds, and honey. There are also plants and flowers for sale. Bring a large bag and be prepared to buy a lot. Many people bring wagons or rolling carts to carry their purchases. Parking is on the street or in lots, and there are food trucks and restaurants open for a bite, if you need one.

It is such a massive and awesome farmers market - If I lived there i would rarely shop in the grocery store. So many different vendors from plants to veggies to the cheesy hot bread!

This was our first time to Madison's Farmers Market. If you're in the area, looking for something to do I highly recommend you go down and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. We walked away with some hot and spicy bread, (it was gone before we left) jam, cheese curds, fresh veggies, corn, and empanadas. The flowers were amazing! We came across these candy corn flowers that were beautiful.
Perfect place to grab a bite to eat and have lunch on the lawn around the capital. (=

When visiting Madison in the summer, you can’t miss the Saturday morning farmers market. It’s downtown by the Capitol and full of tempting goodies. The cheese, of course, and especially the cheese curds are a must. You will also find tasting stations of everything you can imagine, from sausage, gourmet flavored popcorn to fresh local produce and bakery items. I was glad I hadn’t had breakfast before I went so I enjoyed tasting every thing.

While visiting from Denver, my friend and I went to the Madison Farmer's Market because she knows I love supporting locally grown businesses. I was just sad that since I'm visiting I couldn't buy anything to actually cook a meal! There were so many fruit and vegetables available, some I had never actually seen and it would have been so easy to buy a lot of food and make a feast!
The farm fresh vegetables were surprisingly cheap, as I'm used to bundles in Denver being $10 or so, but here the average cost was $1-3 depending on what you were looking for. There are a lot of flowers to purchase as well and the colors are so vibrant, you'll want them all! Be sure to pick up the "Squeaky Cheese" and enjoy a pastry while you wander around the capitol!
Local artists even have jewelry booths, art booths, and other fun things to purchase on the fringe of the market, so be sure to support the local artists as well!

We've been here several times. You have to fall into the crowd flowing around the square. That's part of the scene and part of the fun. There are plenty of farm stands as well as people with all sorts of messages and stories. There are wonderful choices for food to buy, and food trucks if you get hungry. (The Korean beef tacos were really popular.)
Definitely come, but you may want to miss the mid-morning crush.

Bring lots of cash and empty out the fridge before you come. There are vendors with farm fresh veggies, cheese, eggs, meats, flowers, and baked goods all the way around the courthouse. We got farm fresh portobella mushrooms, asparagus, two kinds of fresh wisconsin cheese, eggs, & bacon. We even found vendors selling cat grass & catnip for our pet. We seek out farmer’s markets everywhere we travel. Don’t miss out on this one. Enjoy, we did!

The Farmers Market is very good. It is a true farmers market and has only food and plants, no trinkets. It is at the Sate Capital and if you like these markets it is worth a trip

I love going to the Farmers Market; yes it can be crowded but that is part of the experience. Go early if you don't like crowds. Make sure you got the hot spicey cheesy bread. Lots of people bring blankets and sit on the Capitol lawn. It's a fun thing to do, especially in the fall. I always make sure I stop by Starbucks before making the trek around the square.

It's the best farmers' market because someone who actually produced/grew/made/baked the product has to staff the booth.
Lots of shoppers, and yet no one complains that it's too crowded. The crowd is half the fun.

We go to the farmers market as often as we can in the summer. The food vendors are endless. We like to play in the grass around the capital after having coffee and croissants from Graze.

This was the biggest farmers market I've ever seen, was well set up and had everything you could possibly want! The vendors were amazing and it was fun to walk around and find what you needed!

This is one of the largest farmers markets I have had the pleasure of seeing. Every kind of vegetable except lettuce was available when we were there. I even found non-GMO, organically raised Corn and that is hard to do in this day and age. (Pox on you Monsanto). When it got too hot we ducked into the capitol building to cool off and admire the beautiful architecture inside.

Great produce, great people watching, excellent cheese curds, great variety, all local and you can visit the capitol!!!

This market has drawn national recognition because it is that good. Excellent variety of baked goods, produce, cheese, honey and more can be found at the market that extends completely around the Wisconsin State Capitol square in downtown Madison. Park at one of the city owned ramps and it's an easy walk to and around the market. If you have a young child a stroller or wagon will come in handy. The market prefers no pets and frankly it's rather crowded and hot for dogs, I always feel sorry for them. There are excellent places to eat all within walking distance of the market or take your purchases and sit on the capitol lawn for a picnic. If you still have the energy to walk some more, stroll down State Street and shop and if you make it all the way to the Memorial Union on the UW campus, sit out on the terrace by the lake and take in the view, have some ice cream or a cold drink. It's the perfect way to spend a Saturday morning and afternoon in Madison.
Tip: Should you find yourself needing a bathroom break while at the market, go into the State Capitol building. Nice restrooms/clean and the building is a great place to cool off and look around at the interior- very neat!

I love farmers markets and this one is huge compared to where I'm from you can easily spend an hour or two walking around and trying all the different cheeses and produce, don't forget to get the spicy cheesy bread.

Best farmer's market ever!
Make sure you come on a day when you have time to see everything once, or twice! The selection is incredible. All the fresh foods come from farms all over the Midwest, the choices are excellent! You can find any number of fresh and organic fruits and vegetables. Best looking onions and heads of lettuce! The market also features sellers of local honey and maple syrup! We were able to also purchase farm fresh eggs, cheese (of course!), and meats. Some vendors at the market offer baked goods and breads. There were even selections of gluten free baked goods!
The prices for items are also fantastic! You can easily fill your fridge and not break the bank!
Be sure to also check out the vendors just outside of the market. They offer food and market related items as well. We picked up a few reusable market bags to help us carry our items!
Pro tip: bring cash! Might be a no-brainier for most farmer market veterans, but it is worth reminding. Many of the vendors do not take square!
Also, parking in the area is a little tricky. We paid $5 to park for the morning. Worth every penny!
Can't wait to visit again next spring!

I wish the weather had been better, it was packed and very hot. We got some great cheese, Stella's cheesy bread is a must. Baked goods and lots of flowers.

It's a Farmer's Market in the traditional sense, with locally grown crops and food products from around Dane County, but it is really so much more. On Saturday mornings from April through October, the entire Capitol Square is transformed into a celebration of all things "Madison." The crowds are enormous, but so are the number of vendors and their offerings -- everything from cheese curds to maple syrup or venison jerky to fresh fruits and vegetable of every stripe and color.
Beyond shopping opportunities, there are groups pitching their political viewpoints on the Capitol grounds, carts selling drinks and ethnic cuisine along the perimeter sidewalks, and occasionally bands or other street performers, including the UW Badger Marching Band. It is the place to see and be seen in town, and a must for any first-time visitor to Madtown.

Whether with friends, family or even on your own, I'd ever in Madison, the Saturday farmer's market is one thing you should not miss out on. It is all around our state capitol building, best location ever. Always friendly atmosphere great produce, breads, sweets, cured meats, organic meats, eggs, jams, pasta, coffee, cider, cheeses, jewelry, t shirts, art, the list goes on. There are also food trucks ready to provide great tasting food. This is where to spend your Saturday morning even is not buying anything else just to watch people having a great time. You can go as early as 7am and up to 2 pm. You can not miss out, multiple parking ramps available all around the market.

It consists of a longline of stalls on four sides of the square with the beautiful backdrop of the Capitol Building in the centre.
Great produce; lots of cheeses, many fresh vegetables and fruits even wooden toys. A time, well spent with some bargain food.

Anytime on a Saturday morning in season, head down to the Capitol Square for the best farmer's market in the Midwest! Local produce, meats, cheeses...all top notch. And in football season, come in your Badger gear to join the sea of red! This is also one of the best people watching spots in town.

Amazing... it's the biggest selection of fruit and vegetables at a farmer's market, at about a third of the cost as in Chicago. The Saturday market winds around the beautiful state capitol building -- which we visited to view Madison from atop the observation deck.

I have always wanted to do this. I heard many good things from other people. I went last weekend and had a chance to go again this past Saturday. The market is set up around the Capital square. you walk around the square and a vendor was set up in majority of the spots. There is everything from famous Wisconsin cheese to fresh garden floral arrangements, smoked fish, meats, tastily bakery, organic garden produce, fruits and more. There are also food trucks across from the market and many restaurants in the square area so you can stop and get coffee or a whole meal. The whole cheese bread is a must. You can get it in roll or bread sizes. We did the loaf and eat it as we walked. It is crowded but all are welcome. I saw young families to college kids to seniors on wheels. It is a great way to enjoy Wisconsin weather. It is a wonderful area to see and very clean and open. A must see.

On Saturday, October 19 we visited the Farmers market. We were visiting from Orlando to see my son who moved to Madison in July. He raved about the market and it was fantastic. Bought fingerling potatoes, green onions, gourds, garlic, cinnamon rolls, and cheese bread. All home grown and homemade items. Huge amount of wonderful things for sale. Beautiful bouquets of amazing flowers. Special yarns and crafts. Many tasty cheeses and beef jerky choices. Perfect weather too. What a stunning location around the Capitol building. Madison is such a great city with so much to offer. Highly recommend the Market.

Get there early to avoid the massive crowds. Too many people to really enjoy. Crowds four deep trolling one way around the square. There are many good farmers market vendors with excellent produce. However, be prepared for a crush of humanity. We would much rather enjoy other local farmer markets in the area.

Saturday mornings, on the huge square that surrounds the Capitol Building. We did some Christmas shopping! Lovely preserves, interesting popcorn, flowers, honey, maple syrup, and tons of other organic food that we couldn't use (hotel stay).

I always try and go early in the morning because it draws a huge crowd by mid morning! Something for everyone!

This market has simply grown too big and too crowded. Surprised how much cheese curds and how little good cheese was for sale. Vegetables were abundant in this mid July visit, but corn was just starting to come in. Really enjoyed the empenada and Curtis sold by cart on the SE corner of the Square.

Plan to make this event your entire morning. Grab coffee and fresh pastry as your starter... then meander your way around the Capitol picking up all your fresh produce, cheese and meat. Feel free to price shop, however there isn't a huge variance in cost. Enjoy your day....

I love the Dane County Farmers' Market! Made my first trip of the season there last weekend and I plan on returning again in a few weeks. As the vendors are local, the selection of produce available changes as the summer progresses. It was a beautiful day at the Capitol and I picked up some delicious veggies and cheese. Just be aware that Madison is a liberal city and the naked bike riders made a circuit around the square while we were there so if you're easily offended or don't wish your children to see that sort of thing, you can pop into a store around the way to avoid them.

Best farmers market around! It's a favorite pastime for Madison residents, especially if you are a fan of amazing cheese, fresh produce, delicious bakery and beautiful flowers!

beautiful location to walk around the captiol building. super crowded! hard to stop, but we enjoyed just getting out and stretching our legs and taking a look at everything they had to offer. lots of delicious baked goods and if you lived there, you would have fun cooking with some of the produce they had.

Truly a great experience. A must do in Madison in the Summer time. Great variety of products that include meats, bakery, honey, coffee, entertainers, and prepared food items along with every kind of fruit, flowers, and vegetables that you could imagine. A really fun weekend activity and don't miss Stella hot cheesy bread.

The Madison Farmer's Market is simply wonderful. It is VERY large and involves a fair amount of walking just to make it around the Capital Square. Every kind of vendor you could imagine, delicious food, wonderful smells, beautiful flowers...everything a Farmer's Market should be and then some.

The market was impressive. Everything from cheese, bread, vegetables, fruit and flowers. The market is very busy. You can find anything you want for a great meal.

If you are in Madison on a Saturday morning, you should definitely go to the Farmers Market. It's huge, wrapping all the way around the Capitol building. Very colorful, with all kinds of cheeses, vegetables, fruit, and flowers. Definitely worth seeing. Combine it with a tour of the Capitol building.

What a beautiful market where everybody is so friendly. You'll find a lot of cheese, curd, flowers, honey and other local products. Even if you don't plan to buy anything it's worth the visit. The view on the Capitol is nice.

Always a good selection of fresh produce and baked goods. Great mix of people for people watching. Street musicians and hot coffee available to sit and enjoy the weather and great views of the capitol.

Great variety of fresh food to buy and fun to be part of all the activity. One of the fun activities is people watching.

Having traveled the world this is a farmers market that should not be missed. Be sure to sample the grilled cheese chunks! Only in Wisconsin...mmmm..

This is a great market, great vendors, just way too many people and then they bring the strollers and wagons and just stop anywhere, block the paths of others trying to get to a certain place.

I've been coming to the Farmers market for going on 20 years now and it's still as much fun as ever. The quality found there is unsurpassed and there are great bargains to be found as well. I've gotten to know many of the growers who bring their merchandise and developed friendships with them. Thankfully, not all good things come to an end.

One of the best markets in the country! Surrounding Wisconsin's beautiful Capitol. I would suggest getting there earlier as it does get crowded and if you are impatient, people and strollers might get the most of you. Sometimes, if I get there late, I'll walk around the backside of the vendors and pop in at my usual vendors. Highlights - Spicy cheese bread and fresh cheese curds!

Lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Beautiful plants. Great food. Get there early because the vendors start packing up around 1230.

This is one of the busiest Farmer's Markets I have ever been too. Walking through the crowds suck and trying to push your way through to a booth is bit trying at times. The wonderful smells and colors are amazing. All friends who live in Madison told me I have to try Stella's hot and spicy cheese bread. Amazing, they were delicious. I had the original and my sister had the spinach and cheese. The were $5.00 each and very filled. You can definitely split one. Many wonderful vendors to purchase all kinds of goods. My recommendation would be to get their early and get what you need and go. One of Madison's summer events to see.

I have been this this serval times and the number of vendors and variety of items available is mind blowing! This surrounds the entire capital building square, fun, fun, fun!

Madison's Farmer's Market is a must-do on a Saturday morning. Casual walking, lots to see and buy from flowers to baked goods to fresh vegetables in season. It goes all the way around the Capitol, so put your walking shoes on!

We went to the market and a Wisconsin football game. Our daughter is finishing her residency here and we spent just about s whole day downtown at the market. Cheeses of all sorts and types, meat, jerky, vegetables , jams& jellies, flowers, music, and best of all. ..samples of alot of new things. We had the best time!!

Fun experience, tons of things to look at. But be forewarned actually getting to the vendors booth to buy things may be tough, just be prepared to push your way through the crowd.

I had never been to the capitol before, so I didn't know just how large this farmer's market would be! I later found out it's the largest producers-only farmer's market in the United States, and I believe it. There are so many vendors selling all manner of food, from produce to cheese to breads and pastries, and its all delicious. There are also craft vendors around the outside with cool wares for sale. I would definitely come back.

Go earlier than later. It gets crowded and you wont enjoy it as much juxtapositioning for samples. Overall a sweet sweet farmer's market. Eclectic and fun something for everyone. Take your time, sit on the Capitol grass and let the kids play. Sample the warm cheese bread, buy flowers for your bestie, and get some fresh squeaky curds.

There was such a variety of items, and great prices and everyone was so nice! Even the people at this cheese stand we went to not knowing anything about "squicky cheese" just a wonderful experience, def worth waking up early to go to!

Incredible farmer's market! Gorgeous flowers and nice variety of veggies, fruits, cheeses, meats and other goodies.

My wife and I always enjoy the Madison Farmer’s Market! Get there early for the best selection and a MUCH calmer experience for browsing and purchasing. Great selection of in-season local produce, meats and baked goods .... including gluten free items. We have been to many Farmer's Markets when traveling and nowhere have we found a greater selection. PLUS the setting is beautiful and educational.

Neat idea but it seemed like all were only selling flowers and one of two types of veggies. I was looking for more fruits and veggies especially since I have picky kids. Check out the Capital Building while you are there - it's free and a neat piece of history.

An outstanding Market with a decent variety of food. Needs more vegan goods, peanut butter ... A lot of duplication ... but necessary given its size. Should not have traffic around the square. Lacks a clear vibe like we experience at the Troy, NY market.

So many fruit and vegetable booths, you'll have a hard time deciding who has the freshest veggies. Don't hesitate - I didn't find any of them to be lacking. Flowers everywhere. Sample some cheeses, spreads and baked goods. You won't find any jewelry booths at this market.

A great place to get fresh local products.. Weather it be vegetables, cheese, fruit, flowers or bread.. Also great people watching..

Coming into the fall is a great time to visit the market. Al ot of great items from both summer and fall. Always come up just for this.

This farmers market by far is the best I've been to period. For one it's the largest outdoor farmers market in the country. It's supposed to rain this labor day weekend, saturday, but I'm going anyways. Beautiful selection of Great Organic food and I know you will make it back to thos wonderful farmer's market again and again. I live an hour away but its worth the drive. 😄😄😄

Came here one day. The sights, the sounds, the smells. This place makes me smile. People watching is fun here, too.

Beautiful Farmers Market...so much to choose from...lots and lots of vegetables...
Great Cheese Curds and beautiful flowers...beautiful setting in front of the state capital. A must see on your visit to University of Wisconsin

It was a soggy, rainy day but we had our hearts set on going. The dangers market is nice to wander, taste local flavors, and chat with the dangers who have a passion for good food.
The drizzle that we meandered through kept the crowd small, so it was almost better than fighting the crowds on a sunny morning. The only negative was due to the rain there weren't too many artist booths out.

The farmers market is all around the capital building. When we were here there were also old timey cars on display all around the streets so those were fun to see, not sure how often they do this. This farmers market was great, lots of variety of items and very good quality items. They had flowers, fresh produce, tomatoes, asparagus, mushrooms, onions, peppers, honey, jams, all kinds of sauces and dips, baked goods, breads, brownies, cookies, fresh meat, beef jerky. I am not sure of the exact vendor name but we got some peppered beef jerky and it was amazing, I was sad I didnt get more.

The food here is fantastic, all of it. The street vendors are great, and the selection at the stalls is always good.

Don't pre-judge the Madison/Dane County Farmer's Market based upon your visits to other farmer's markets. Trust me, this one is like no other in terms of size, variety of offerings, quality of offerings, accompanying enterainment and setting. When I take people to the market during a visit from out-of-town, they are ALWAYS amazed when they experience it. Highly recommended!!
Always Interesting
The Madison Farmer's Market is a huge event held every Saturday through Spring, Summer and late into the Fall. There is so much to choose from -- anything from homegrown veggies and fruits, to baked goods, to meats, to flowers and plants. There is always entertainment too. The only drawbacks are it is very crowded and parking can sometimes be a bit of a problem although there are parking ramps in the immediate area. Nothing bad enough to dissuade a person from going and enjoying the event though. It is held on the Capitol square and the Capitol building is usually open so why not check out the lovely architecture of the building while you're in the area! Ask the Capitol guards about the observation deck. You can get a great view of downtown Madison from up there as well as a nice overview of the Farmer's Market.
