I climbed with my 90-year-old grandmother, my parents and younger brothers in their 60s. There was not much steep slope (the stairs to the last observation deck are steep) and it was fun like a hiking trail. It was a good memory to see a panoramic view of Waikiki Beach and a hollow where your name used to be a deity.

Reservations are required to enter. There are restrooms and a small gift shop before you begin your hike up the hill. The trail to the top starts out on a paved walking path. It then changes to an uneven rock path and has a lot of steps towards the top. There is a tunnel part way up. When you exit the tunnel on the way up you have the choice of going right up a lot of stairs or going left. Left is easier but you will still encounter stairs towards the top. We made the loop by going left and then coming down the steep staircase before re-entering the tunnel on the way down. The views at the top are beautiful.

This hike is not easy in my opinion and I consider myself fit as I walk 5-6 hours every week for exercise. I urge you to bring water and wear sturdy footwear. There is a long stretch of the mostly uphill trail that is rocky. It would be very easy to slip or trip. Take care.

The hike was strenuous, but well worth it for the experience and bragging rights! Family of four on Christmas holiday, two seniors and two young men.

Whoo-Hoo, we did it. We wanted a challenge and we got it. We had a rental car and didn't want to deal with the on-site timed parking lot. We decided to park for free at Queen Kapiolani Community College and walk to the entrance. Diamond Head was not at all what I expected, which made it all the more interesting. Grab some water and give it a shot. The views of Waikiki at the summit are amazing. BTW, my husband is 68 and I'm 66. If we can do it, you can probably do it too.

We were kicking ourselves for not climbing Diamond Head during our first visit to Oahu, and made sure to plan for it this trip, and the end result easily breathtaking!
We wanted to watch the sunrise out of the ocean from the top of the crater, and after a substantial hike that transitioned from paved walkways to washed out trails snaking up the mountain (still very walkable) to climbing the final concrete steps, we were rewarded with a spectacular sunrise and incredible views of eastern Oahu and Honolulu. It was well worth the effort, and will do it again to greet a new day in an incredibly spiritual manner.
Quick tips, running/hiking shoes are a must to maintain good footing; bring water for the hike; and would recommend doing this at the start of the day, before the day gets too hot. In terms of effort, it is approximately 10,000 steps total both ways from the gate, and you are climbing ~ 700 vertical feet, so pace yourselves. The reward is definitely worth the effort!

A very busy and well-appointed hike, almost too sanitized. The trail is simple, secure and accessible to everyone, even beginners. The panoramic view of Waikiki at the top is clearly worth a visit. What to do if you are looking for a short walk with a nice reward on arrival. Attention: you must remember to book in advance, access is regulated.

I would get reservations early in the day. We had a 6:00 am Dawn patrol, and to my surprise, there were a lot of headlamps (or iPhone flashlights) on the trail above us at 6:00 for the sunrise.
Parking is effortless with your reservation.
Lights are key after the first 10 minutes due to the uneven trail, if you get the Dawn patrol times.
The stairs are steep, so that is good to plan for. The tunnel is very cool and leads to your final spiral stairs. Then, you will come out of a bunker ans make your way to the outlook of the crater and sunrise. It is a loop, so you can make your way down with seeing all.

If you enjoy scenic views and are in moderately good shape, this is a must-do hike.
Don't expect a bucolic experience; even with the reservation system there will be a steady stream of people chugging uphill / downhill.
In less than a mile you get a variety of experiences - paved trail, rocky trail, metal stairs, and a tunnel.
The summit outlook is the prize, but there are a couple of other observation decks partway up which are also worth checking out.
Be sure to make online reservation in advance. You have to pick a one-hour entry window.
I took the public bus from Waikiki. It stops near the park entrance road, then you walk approximately 10 minutes to the staging. are. I saw quite a bit of misinformation online, implying it was difficult to get to the park without a car. Use Google maps, look for the entry road and you can see which bus routes service the nearby stops.
There are restrooms, benches and picnic tables near the staging area.

Must do it was a gorgeous reward once you got to the top. Moderate Hike the stairs at the end were intimidating, but we made it. You need a reservation to do this hike only available online, so make sure to do that. We took an Uber .

Great value for money. Basic facilities only, no cafeteria. Crater path is narrow & gets busy with lots of people climbing

Very nice little hike.
Good views to take some good photos.
Remember to spend some time looking around and learning about the place.

The views were amazing. We made it to the top! Its a long trip up the mountain but take it slow and anyone can make it. It is windy at the top so don't wear hat or visor or it will blow off. bring water and good walking shoes. Definitely worth the trip. It wasn't too expensive but reservations are required. There is a bathroom at the bottom by the parking lot.

Love love the experience but you better be ready to hike if you are in shape… lol great experience for my husband and I. Would do it again.

Was a great hike but a bit more difficult than expected . Had the 4-6pm slot and it was very warm. Expect uneven paths and steep inclines including the stairs! The views at the top are absolutely amazing and worth the pain in the legs!

If you are staying in Waikiki, you can't miss it. The unmistakable Diamond Head State Monument. On our previous trip to Hawaii, we saw it, but unfortunately missed out, due to Covid restrictions. This time, we were committed to hiking this iconic landmark, and we are sure glad we did. This is more than your usual hike. It's challenging, but not overly so. It has spectacular vistas for incredible photo ops. And, of course, lots of history. More than 300,000 years of it.
Must admit, after watching some of the videos on its website, we were wondering if we were up for the challenge. However, if you are up to it, it's worth it. We are not what you would consider superfit, expert hikers, but we do like to hike and trek about. We would classify it as moderate difficulty. The path is well marked with plenty of places to take a rest. The beginning is paved, wide, and only a slight incline. As you progress, the path grows narrower, and less smooth. Your ascent has plenty of switchbacks to ease the vertical rise. At points the path narrows to a single person width, and is pretty rough, but passable on foot with a good walking shoe. Everyone talks about the tunnel, which is pretty cool, and offers some great video options. Once you exit the tunnel you can choose a very difficult path to the top, or less difficult. We took the less difficult. At the very end is where you encounter the most challenging part, with steep climbs and stairs. However, plenty of people make it, and you are rewarded with some of the most outstanding views of the Pacific, Waikiki, the Mountains, and the crater floor. There's even some war era pill boxes to explore. Definitely worth what's really a short moderate hike. We did it in just over 30 minutes, and weren't rushing, but we weren't stopping often either. We spent about 2 hours total, but most of that was at the top.
Once at the top, we could see how people could get in trouble. It was busy, but not crowded the day of our visit. Some acted like they were walking around their house. While generally safe, we always have a healthy respect for nature, and the toll it can extract if you are not aware and careful. Unfortunately, we did see some folks walk around fences and take risks to get that perfect photo. Not only to risk harming the monument, you risk seriously harming yourself. Fences and signs are there for a reason. Rant completed.
Recommend doing a little research on Diamond Head and the surrounding area before going. It will help you gain perspective, and add to the experience. Understanding the volcano and how it was formed, the cultural significance to native Hawaiians, how the name changed from Le'ahi to Diamond-you can thank the colonizers again, its use as a military installation during World War II, then ultimately transitioning to a landmark and state monument.
They do offer a trail map at the entrance and there is a small visitor hut, with retail, water and restrooms. Some other tips include - get your entry ticket online, early. They limit the number of visitors each day. Most advise going early to avoid the mid-day heat. We went mid-day, and while hot, it wasn't unbearable. Though it wasn't at the height of summer, either. There is little shade. Lather up with sunscreen and take water. The last water station is at the visitor hut, bring enough to last. Sturdy walking shoes are fine. The path gets rocky and uneven, but you won't need hiking boots, unless that's what you want to wear. Hang on to your hat. It gets windy, and you can see a few hats on the side of the mountain. Take your time, take your lunch, and take in the view. We enjoyed hanging out at the top having lunch. Trash cans are sparse on the trail, so plan to bring your trash out with you. The hike to the summit isn't for everyone, but there are other accessible trails with some decent lookout points for those with limited mobility .
Diamond Head is well known, and most people will make it a part of the Hawaiian stay. We found it enjoyable, busy, but not overcrowded. While a matter of personal taste and preference, we did the hike up the Makapu'u Point Lighthouse trail as well, and found it equally, if not better, in the spectacular views category. It's a great no-cost alternative.
One thing that made it extra special was Taco Tuesday so I stop by in this Mexican grill restaurant on situated in Wikiki Boulevard and got me a couple burritos and 2 bottles of watered my lunch was delicious with incredible views, needless to say everyone look kind a jelly lol
so keep that in mind and TAKE YOUR TRASH when you leave this awesome park.

You’ll spend about 2–3 hours there. Parking charges are $25. 🚗 Mostly stairs! ⛰️ It takes about 30–45 minutes one way, but picture-taking takes longer. 📸 The view from the top is beautiful — you can see the entire Honolulu skyline with the ocean. 🌊🏙️ It's a nice, short hike and definitely one of the must-see spots in Hawaii. 🌺 It’s an old, extinct volcanic mountain. 🌋

This experience was worth every drop of sweat and mud on my shoes. The breathtaking views at the top of Diamond Head are well worth it. I personally would encourage those that want to have this experience to book the 6-8am time slot directly from the Hawaii State website.
What is nice about the 6-8 am time slot is the following:
1. There is a large population of folks entering at the same time. While it is dark, plenty have flashlights and headlamps to guide the path. We used each other as motivation to make the trek.
2. It takes 30-40 minutes to get to the top of you move at a casual pace. Doing so allows you to get into position for the sunrise.
3. As of December 2025, sunrise is at 7am. This allows you to get some brilliant photos and videos.
**** Be mindful of the bugs at the top of the volcanic crater. Im still itchy four days later. Maybe wear long sleeves****
4. The trek down is in the sunlight and allows you to take your time and grab photos you would t have been able to get on the way up.
I enjoyed this hike. It was moderate in difficulty due to the recent abundance of rain. However, I would do it again in a heartbeat. Wear waterproof shoes and be mindful of the uneven terrain.

I see a lot of people complaining about needing to purchase tickets in advance, but it makes the walk so much better. We walked Diamond Head in November, which is supposed to be low season and there were constant lines of people walking up and down the mountain. I hate to think what it was like before they introduced the ticketing system.
It is an easy walk for those with moderate or above fitness. People kept talking about how hard the 100 stairs were, but we never found any stairs that were hard. The rocks are slippery even when it is dry so make sure your footwear has good grip.
The top gets very crowded so bring your patience and you will get your photo opportunity.

We reserved our parking and tickets to Diamond head a few weeks before we arrived to Oahu. We had the first morning spots which I’m so glad we did as we didn’t feel heat exhausted at all. It wasn’t too busy on the hike up. Our 21 year old daughter got to the top in 25 minutes flat and that was waiting on me in a few places. The rest of us made it at 28 minutes and it wasn’t a race for us just a nice pace as we stopped to take photos along the way. We are early 50’s now and felt it was easier today than our last trip 10 years ago. There are 75 steps at one point and then you reach an area where you can go up 99 steps to the right or take the easier route to left which still has some steps but is more walking and not steep incline. We went to the right with the steps and then came back down the easier route at the top. The views are great of Waikiki and the lighthouse. We passed a lady in her mid 70’s who was going up at a nice pace and she was determined to get to the top. Reserve your ticket and parking in advance. Restrooms at bottom of hill where you begin the hike. Take water to drink at top before you head back down the hill. Lots of people (tourists) to take your group photos at the top. Everyone helps each other get a memorable picture.

I bought the tickets about a month prior to arrival for the 6-8am slot. It was still dark when we arrived just before 6am. People had flashlights or used their cellphones for the first 10-15 minutes of the hike before it got bright enough to not need them. We got near the top in about 1/2 hr but it was almost a stand still because everyone was hanging out to see the sunrise. Unfortunately, it was a bit cloudy so the sun went into the clouds shortly after we saw it in the horizon.
It started raining a bit on our way down but the rainbow that emerged after was worth getting a bit wet for. It took us about 40 minutes to make it back to our car. A lot fewer people were hiking up when we were going down. I think the sunrise hike must be popular.
The views at the top, on the way up and down are spectacular. This hike isn't very difficult but there are uneven areas and quite a few steps. It didn't get hot because by the time we were done, it was still 7:15am.

Hiking Diamond Head was an amazing experience! The trail was a bit challenging, but the stunning panoramic views of Waikiki and the ocean made it all worth it. The summit offers a perfect spot to relax and take in the scenery. Outdoor lovers go visit there !

During our time on Oahu and the Honolulu area, we decided to rent a car (Turo) rather than pay a tour agency. Our rental car day was under $150. We visited the North Shore with great surf, BUT this review is about Diamondhead. It is worth noting that an online reservation is needed to visit this park ($10 + $5/person). The reservation has a 2-hour window & durarion. While many people take the hike to the top of Diamondhead, we elected to enjoy the views from inside the Caldera with our grandmother. The weather was great and the views equally spectacular. Whatever method you choose to get to the park, be sure to take the hike to the rim to fully maximize the adventure in gathering those Kodak moments.

A solid family outing that requires exercise and rewards you with a fantastic 360° view at the summit. Must reserve ticket entry online in advance and we found it easier to Uber where we were dropped off right before the tunnel to the Visitor Centre. Definitely wear good, solid walking shoes, sunscreen, hat, etc. because we could feel the heat rising as soon as we got there (9 am entry). Bring your bottled water -- there is a water fountain where the clean washrooms are at the bottom. Definitely take your time and enjoy the views. It was crowded but everyone was respectable in giving each other space along the pathways and taking turns taking photos in spots at the summit. If you don't like heat, go earlier in the morning. We walked back to Waikiki which is doable as it is a downhill and there was a breeze.

This is a must do experience if visiting Honolulu. It is a challenging climb but worth the effort. Book ahead is a must, the trails and stairs can be crowded. Catch the 2, 2L or 23 bus out of Waikiki makes it a cost effective experience.

This was a mildly difficult hike. The path is uneven and is easy to lose your footing. Most of the path has a handrail and there are several spots to stop for a quick rest if needed. The views all the way up are beautiful. Once to the top it is truly breathtaking from all directions.

We booked a reservation 2 weeks in advance for an early morning hike. (Reservations are required for out of state residents.) Morning is best to avoid the crowds later in the day and the heat. (Take water, wear a hat or visor, and go to the bathroom BEFORE you start the climb.) Some have tagged this as an "easy" hike, but I do not recommend it for people with mobility issues. Also, sneakers/hiking shoes are strongly encouraged. There were 4 of us, with the youngest being 18, and it took our group about 45 minutes to reach the top (we stopped along the way to rest and take photos). The park was clean and the view from the top was well worth it - absolutely beautiful!

The hike to the top is strenuous but worth the view. My husband has arthritis, so he didn't climb. He found a nice bench under a shady tree as I enjoyed the climb. It took me 50 minutes to reach the summit and 35 to come back down. The hike back down was tough on your toes because you are coming downhill the whole time so it puts a lot of strain on your toes. Make sure you take a water bottle with you! Not recommended for anyone with arthritis in their feet, asthma or heart conditions.

It is so cool to see. The view from the top is amazing. It is an exhausting hike up. It isn’t ideal for those not in good shape for that reason (some elderly as an example). The trail is bumpy and there are lots of stairs. There is a bathroom.

The hike; although not far is definitely uphill. Paved or partially paved most of the way and then the stairs to the top. Take your time and rest along the way. The Views are absolutely amazing and worth the effort.

What started off as an enjoyable walk turned into a nightmare queuing at the top. We waited nearly an hour to have our photo taken at the top - had we known how longvthe wait was we wouldn't have queued. Too many people taking ages to take pictures (and the usual instagramers'!) They could do with someone at the top to limit the time people get at the top - or have a sign advising how long wait is from a particular point (like Dusney). View of Waikiki/Honolulu was great but disappointing wait.

Find out some of the history of the crater then climb up to the top, with breathtaking 360 degree views! Bring water!

Amazing place! Travel through a tunnel to reach the crater of an ancient volcano. You have to book in advance to be able to take a hike through the crater and up the slopes.

Definitely not a trek for the faint of heart. It was a steady and sometimes steep incline over the approx mile. The view is rewarding and hike down is much easier, but be prepared to sweat and be exhausted if you are somewhat out of shape.

This was a surprise for us to experience.
Did you know in January 2025 the park closes at 2 p.m. for repairs?
How about the knowledge that making a reservation is recommended at least a day ahead of time?
Consider arriving a half an hour early with phone ready screen of your confirmation!
It cost around $31 for four adults. Note it took 22 minutes for our 38 year old son to walk to the summit at a good pace. There is uneven ground on the path. It's a two directional path; you meet people and
People pass you. Kids run around you. Most of the path has a hand rail. You can choose to walk steps to the summit. If you are afraid of heights consider your options. You can turn around at any point. There are a few places to stop and rest. Be sure to take your time to enjoy nature ( birds, etc,) . You will not find any water supply from the first starting spot to that same ending spot. The bathrrooms were clean. There is a small gift shop. No strollers, wheel chairs, etc recommend. At the bottom area there are nice picnic tables and a park.
What to wear, bring:
Hat
Wear sunscreen
Good traction closed tied shoes
Water bottle

If you're on Oahu, you should absolutely take the hike up Diamond Head Crater. The hike isn't bad at all, so you can bring the whole family!

Diamond head was beautiful, the views are phenomenal. Booking the tour made everything so easy, they picked us up and dropped us off at our hotel, the hike up is a bit tougher than I thought it was going to be, but we survived. I highly recommend going early morning and take water. Dave and Barbara Hughes , Basehor, Kansas

Went up on a Sunday morning. Very busy already when it opened. I wasn’t able to get to the very top because other visitors were camping spaces and weren’t moving at all. It was a very easy hike up and down but give yourself time if you aren’t used to rougher unpacked surfaces. The light was out in the tunnel but not a problem with a cellphone light.

Simple hike, good to see the city and the ocean at the top, but not a lot of shade or unique sites on the way. It's not too long, but there's very tall stretches of stairs, too thin to rest on the side during, so make sure you're comfortable with those. Reservations required, $5 per person, you can enter till 4:30pm.

If you are in Honolulu, you must climb to the top of Diamond Head. It's just a thing you must do. You will need to make reservations in advance to make this hike. Once there you show the rangers your reservations and they wish you well. The hike is about 2 miles round trip but keep in mind the first half is all up hill. The hike starts out at the bottom on a nice walkway but shortly up the hill it turns into a rough well-worn path of uneven rocks, staircases, and even a tunnel. The path is also narrow, and people are going both ways so be careful passing each other. The higher up you get the windier it gets, and the mountain side is littered with hats, and anything people didn't tie down. But if you take your time, you can make it to the top. Be sure to wear sneakers or hiking shoes. No flipflops, heels, and so on. The view from the top is amazing and well worth it. Hike took about 1.5 hours total round trip with several rest stops along the way.
Definitely a must do if you're in Honolulu/Waikiki

Steep hike but so worth it. Uneven ground, lots of stairs. Recommend go early before the sun starts blazing. We are in out 50s and okay shape and took us an hour.
There is a brief tunnel you had to walk through. I have claustrophobia but I was able to come through it okay. You can stand and walk through it, but it is narrow.

This is amazing! We booked a carpark for when they opened (6am) and paid entrance online, which made entering seamless. We arrived just after 6am and did the walk up the trail. You do work up a sweat but even though we got there as the park opened it was still quite busy. I would not want to arrive much later than that as it was getting very busy at the top as we were leaving. The views are spectacular, so worth the effort walking to the top. It was also good to avoid the heat by getting up early, we had with us 4 kids late teens/early 20's, who did complain about getting up early but was glad we did when we got to the top and it was relatively tourist free. I have a bad feeling it would be queueing all the way up and down in busy times, which isn't my kind of thing.

We took a Viatorsunset cruise from Waikiki. This cruise was timed to first see the Hawaiian Waikiki coastline and then to see Diamond Head before returning to see the sunset.
We got ample viewing of Diamond Head and the coastline but the cruise lacked a coherent commentary of facts and figures. For example no mention was made on the pros and cons of doing an actual climb of the monument.
The sunset was good but being a cloudy day this was not as spectacular.
The next day we saw a better sunset from the Executive Lounge of Prince Waikiki hotel.
Munir Daya

Lots of people at the summit but a great view non the less!
Scenery and the bunkers really helped the steep climb

I’m solely writing this review to shame a school and their chaperones for the awful experience I had hiking the diamond head crest trail. It was a gorgeous hike, many places to stop off and take a rest and take pictures. The summit was breathtaking. Lots of other hikers, but that was so be expected. On the hike back down there was some kind of a school field trip happening where the students were singing the “99 bottles of beer on the wall” song over and over and over. They did not relent. I thought my brain was going to explode. It was so distracting and obnoxious that my experience was sufficiently ruined and it’s still all I can think about. I can still hear the song. At one point we paused to let them pass us and I asked them politely to stop and they did not. Down the switchback was one of their chaperones who dominantly stated “It’s okay, they’re with me.” I don’t know why he thought that was important to say. Maybe he was the king of diamond head. When I explained my unease he then encouraged the kids to sing LOUDER. It’s been almost 12 hours and I can still hear it playing in my head. Many people save up money over the course of months to afford a trip to Honolulu and want to take a scenic relaxing hike, but that was stolen away from us and many other patrons who just wanted to enjoy nature. And instead we got an unsolicited concert from a parade of bratty teens and their overconfident body guard. Please do the hike, it is stunning. But please also remember to think of the hundreds of others along the ride with you. My general distain for children has been refreshed and renewed today.

This is truly the way to experience the real Hawaii hiking adventure for those of us who do not hike all the time. The views are remarkable once you get to the top. Please keep in mind, this is not an attraction that offers a short cut up to the top. This is not a hike that you should worry about what you are wearing for your selfies. Wear walking shoes not flip flops or cute sandals. Bring a full bottle of water and wear sunscreen. You will need to go on line and reserve a time slot.

Love love love this gorgeous hike. Good level of difficulty. I couldn’t go through the tunnel because I get uncomfortable in closed in spaces but my family went and loved it. They also said I could have easily made it.

A very easy and chill hike with amazing views! It was pretty busy because it is a popular tourist attraction but that didn't bother us at all! Most people were very nice and respectful to each other. Since there were so many people, it meant that there were a lot of people who were willing to help you take photos! We didn't need to have a reservation and got in for free because we go to UH, but I would consider it worth the money if we had to pay. You can see Waikiki, UH in Mānoa Valley, and Koko Head Crater too! You even get to walk through tunnels and bunkers! I think if you have the time, Diamond Head is a great hike to do for people of all ages!

I woke up in the morning and thought, "Let's try climbing Diamond Head!" I searched the reservation website and found that reservations were available from the afternoon of the day, so I made a reservation for 3-4pm. I decided to take the 2pm bus and go for now. There didn't seem to be many people coming in the evening, so I was a little worried because I didn't see many people from the bus stop to the entrance, but when I arrived at the visitor center, there were a few people there, so I was relieved.
The group of young Western women who checked in before us didn't seem to have made a reservation, and they seemed to have paid in cash at the reception. (Maybe because it was a quiet time...)
As I was about to start climbing, I started walking down the path from the visitor center to Diamond Head, and was surprised to see a mongoose!
*On the way back, I encountered another mongoose. (Are there many of them??)
It was quiet, so I was able to climb slowly and take lots of photos, and I thought it wouldn't be so bad in the evening.
On the way back, the bus heading towards Waikiki took a while to come, so we had to wait a little, but there were 4-5 other groups of people who had finished climbing and were waiting for the bus, so I was able to wait with peace of mind.

Went around 1230 have to book in advance on park web site which I did the day before with no parking. We took Uber there. I’m 56 in decent shape and was harder than I thought. Bring water better yet go earlier. Top was amazing and at least I can say I did it . One and done for me!

Diamond Head State Monument, Oahu's iconic volcanic crater offers exciting hikes through lush vegetation and rewarding peak views of Honolulu and the Pacific Ocean

We hiked Diamond Head during our trip, and the views from the top were absolutely worth it. The trail is often described as “moderate,” but to us it felt a little more than moderate with quite a few stairs and some steeper sections near the top.
It is definitely doable if you take your time and bring plenty of water. I recommend going early in the morning to avoid the heat and the crowds.
The panoramic view of Waikīkī and the coastline from the summit is spectacular and makes the effort worthwhile.
If you are up for a bit of a climb and want one of the most iconic views on Oʻahu, Diamond Head is a must-do.

A great Hike to do with the key. As others have said, lovely view of the island at the top, go when the sun is low in the sky. Plenty of rest stops along the way to catch your breath. I'd bring lots of water and a towel to wipe your face if prone to sweating.Be sure to be out of the park by 6pm to avoid being locked in. 35mins to the top

Even at 3 p.m., the road was still sunny and shadowless, so it was quite hot.
Steps, tunnels and hills lead to a wonderful view.
I think it was good to go.

This was an incredible hike! Don’t forget to make a reservation, you’ll need it to gain access to the park. After researching before going, I knew it would be a challenging hike. The trail to the summit is a fairly short .8 mile hike on a mostly paved trail. The stairs are what kill me, but It was well worth the effort, the views at the top are incredible! Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. It was quite hot the day we hiked, and we started at 8am, but there was a nice breeze which helped. Take the time to check out the World War II bunker near the summit!

A well kept national park. The hike is challenging, especially in the humidity, but very very well worth it.
The views are absolutely spectacular and the feeling of achievement is amazing!

Sort of an easy hike. Took about an 1 hour return. Spectacular views from the top. If you're not local, you'll need to make a reservation to do the hike

The wife and I walked from downtown Waikiki to get to the walk we had booked in. The walk up to the top was excellent even for a fat unfit person like me.
Totally enjoyed the whole experience and the views and photos were worth it.
We had a 9am walk booked in and found it to be a great time.
Tips we would suggest -
Wear appropriate shoes as it is very uneven ground you are walking on, lots of people in thongs, crocs etc. were slipping and tripping everywhere - very unsafe be smart and use joggers or enclosed shoes with grip.
Take water as it is a decent hike if you are only moderately fit or below that level like me.
Lots of older people we seen really struggle, and this was due to their size/fitness, be prepared for a tough couple of hours if you are unfit or overweight. I am overweight and found it tough at times but there were a lot of bigger, older people than me doing the walk and they were really suffering.
Wear clothing that is loose and comfortable like shorts, shirts, singlets, no need for long pants etc as it gets quite hot doing the walk.

As lovers of the outdoors this was one of the many hikes we had planned. You will need a reservation to get into the park and while you can do it when you get there- it’s just easier to do it ahead of time. Wear hiking shoes, bring water and pace yourself- it’s a moderately tough hike but you’ll see all ages and abilities hiking. It can be a bit crowded but it’s worth the views along the way.

I had a reservation at 1400-1600 and didn't really think about it as it said I had to be there by 13:30 because it was a rental car. I arrived after 14:30 due to traffic, and he looked a little nasty, but fortunately it was Monday, so he let me in. There are no toilets on the mountaintop. If you climb it normally, it's a little over 30 minutes.

beautiful trail! I was able to reserve a slot only two days in advance during christmas week, but it sold out soon after according to families I met at the entrance who were turned away without a reservation! so plan ahead and book your slot! the hike itself is moderate. it is short but uphill, with uneven rocky terrain and stairs. There was a railbar to hold onto which i really appreciated for my mom who is not a hiker at all. the hike was easy for me, doable with breaks for my mom, so use your own judgement. there are benches and lookouts to take a break, and lots of other people taking breaks so i would recommend going up even a little to see for yourself if you are unsure in your ability, you can always head right back down since its one path taken up and back down! busy trail with a super diverse crowd from little kids to older adults - very friendly/welcoming. the view at the top is gorgeous and you can see the geography of the island so well. the bottom of the trail (inside the crater) is also a beautiful open space, perfect for a picnic or to relax. bring a hat and sunscreen! it gets hot!
tips: you can bus directly from waikiki , but it does add half a mile or so of a walk to the trailhead versus parking/ubering in. there are taxis waiting at the parking lot at the trailhead in case you do need a ride. water fountain/bathroom/gift shop at trailhead.

We had an amazing time at Diamond Head. It was a hard trek for this fluffy girl but with lots of rests I made it to the top for the beautiful views. Would definitely recommend everyone have this experience if they are in Oahu. My only recommendation would be to have a water refill station at the top, it is hot and carrying lots of water makes the trek that much harder. We just sipped our water bottles on the way up and then once at the bottom we refilled and grabbed a Gatorade and juice from the vending machines which were reasonably price.

Don't miss this! A great opportunity to accomplish something fun and make a family memory. Our group was a young adult and two parents in our 50's and it was very do-able...as long as you're relatively fit and take breaks as needed. We reflected that my 80+ year old father (who is fit) would have a difficult time getting to the top if he didn't take a LOT of breaks...but we think for healthy folks up to 75 or so it's do-able.
I recommend, if you're flying in from the mainland, to plan this early your first or second day on the island, so you can get the cooler morning temps while you're still on the mainland time zones!

Moderate hike, definitely need to be in decent physical condition but worth the effort for the views!

Outstanding boutique hotel. Close enough to walk to Waikiki Beach and the busy Honolulu shopping area, yet away from the tumult, across from a nice park, and beautiful views of Diamond Head from our balconies. Excellent & responsive staff. Beach chairs, filtered water dispenser, and bikes at no charge. We’ll be back here!

We climbed Diamond Head! Fantastic views from look out spots! The climb is a bit strenuous and after the initial starting sidewalk it is an uneven walking path but very doable with a hand rail a long the way. You can stop as you want if you need to catch your breath and people will go around you. Very interesting also to see how the military used this during WWII as a lookout station. And again, amazing views especially at the top!!

That was a good short hike up a monumental site with my family. It was a good way to exercise and see a beautiful view of downtown Waikiki and the Pacific Ocean. The lookout point was a unique opportunity to experience the military's viewpoint during WWII.

This was a great hike. It is a little more challenging then it looks. The views are amazing so worth it. Rough terrain in some spots a fair amount of steps. The tunnel was pretty tight. Make sure to get your reservations made before arriving if you want to park on property. I would do it again.

Diamond Head State Monument offers a fantastic hike with breathtaking views of Honolulu. The trail is well-maintained and suitable for most fitness levels. The panoramic view from the top is worth every step. A must-do when in Oahu!

Awesome views climbed the trail to the top, it took about 1 hour to get to the top. The climb was challenging, but doable for most abilities.

A beautiful hike to admire a crater.
You have to have a little physical condition and good shoes to climb to the top.
The price of parking is $7

Climbing to the top of Diamond Head to watch the sunrise is an excellent experience to do in Hawaii! Just go to the Diamond Head State Monument website and make a reservation for the first time slot! The cost is 5 dollars per person and 10 dollars for parking! The ideal is to arrive before the scheduled sunrise time! The climb is easy despite being steep in some points! I highly recommend it!!

Great lookout spot, entree to the visitor center tunnel was closed…. Would have been nice to have seen Honolulu from the other side. Maybe next visit.

Incredible adventure to climb the side of the crater and see the military bunker and the city and ocean views at the top! The first part is paved and stops with benches to rest before deciding to pursue the rigorous path of potholes. There are rails to use the entire way. Thank goodness there are reservations required so that the trail is not overrun by aggressive hikers. It was nice to take it slow and steady. So worth the trip!

Would recommend everyone do this while in Honolulu. It’s an easy hike and excellent way to start the day if you’ll be spending time in Hawaii.

This was my second time doing this hike. Make reservations in advance to get your desired time. We went at 8am and while there were people, it wasn’t nearly as busy as going later in the day. Hike takes about an hour round trip. I thought it was very easy, but there are a few spots that some people may have a harder time on. Absolutely love the views at the top and there are lots of picturesque views on the way up.

They will not take cash!
Be sure and book online
( seniors not welcome)
Don't get me wrong, the hike is beautiful, but don't show up with legal tender

Great experience with amazing views! It is a relatively easy hike up the mountain. Took us about 45min to get to the top. Bother my 7 year old and 1p year old had no problems hiking up. It was worth it for the breathtaking view. It was not too busy when we went so we were able to take some photos and enjoy the view for a bit.

It was awesome day with beautiful weather and great views! Great exercise. Take it slow and enjoy your surroundings, it’s not long. We had so much fun!

It is a moderate climb. If it is a warm day take a hand towel to dry your face. Water is a must . Need have comfortable shoes! Also need to reserve space in advance for car and people going. Definitely a must if you are in Oahu!

Beautiful views, but I would not put the hike as an easy one. At best it is moderate but worth it once you get to the top. If you are claustrophobic, you may have issues going through the two tunnels.

Our family did the summit walk to watch the sun rise. The pathway is good, though you do need to be a little careful in the dark. The views from the top were incredible, you obviously get to see a great sunrise, but also views of Waikiki, the eastern part of Oahu and out to sea. There was a lot of people at the summit but well worth it. Moderate fitness required.

This hike is a must-do! Although it is steep, narrow, and often crowded, the incredible view at the top makes the effort worthwhile. If you’re somewhat fit, this hike isn’t too difficult. In fact, my 2-year-old was able to hike 80% of the trail by herself. It gets hot, so be sure to bring plenty of water and a hat! It's best to hike early in the morning when temperatures are still cooler.

I wouldn't normally review something like this, because I feel like a nature hike is fairly self explanitory, but this one is for those with a fear of heights on the fence about trying it. I am terrified of heights, always have been. I have backed out midway through hikes before when I felt like they were higher/scarier than I was comfortable doing. When my husband and I were planning our recent trip to Hawaii, i was very much on the fence about making this hike because there wasn't a lot of information out there detailing the parts of it that I was most concerned about. So here you go, folks. The trail starts out on a gentle slope where you can see the ground all around you. For this first portion, you are literally walking on a paved sidewalk. After a short distance, this transitions into more natural, rocky trail. We wore our hiking shoes for this trip, but they're also our regular shoes. At no point on this trail would I say hiking shoes are actually required. You gain elevation quickly on this short trail, but for most of it you do not get the impression you are climbing a steep hill. Some parts are steeper than others, there is uneven terrain, rocks, and some treet roots. You know, nature stuff. As you start getting up higher, you can see over the side and see the land and sea below you. There are rails along these portions and on your other side, you have the mountain. Most portions of the trail are big enough that two people can pass each other or walk side by side, so if the view from up high feels daunting, you can get closer to the mountain. (I honestly was looking straight ahead of me for most of this hike and it helped a lot) There are some stairs that wrap around, again, there is a railing there and there's no need to be on the outer edge unless you want to. Once you reach the tunnel, you know you're nearly to the top. The tunnel is fairly short, and when you leave it, you'll see more stairs. The stairs after the tunnel are probably the worst ones for those with a fear of heights. They are a steep climb, not difficult, but you definitely feel how high you are going up them. There's about 2 sets of these between the tunnel and the very top of the mountain. Go slow, focus on the step in front of you instead of the views around you and then when you reach the top, congratulate yourself by stopping to admire the beautiful views. You will go back the way you came, but somehow those stairs felt less intimidating going back down. All and all, the trail felt easy to us, but we did pass a LOT of people who sounded like they were dying so know your limits and your physical ability before trying any hike. Bring water, wear sunscreen.

After all, you should climb when you come to Honolulu.
It takes about 30-40 minutes from the visitor center to the top.
At first it is a gentle, easy-to-walk paved road, but it is narrow and angled from halfway up.
The view from the top is nice and pleasant with a 360-degree view, so come!

For a very small fee, hiking up diamond head is a must. The hike takes around an hour and is 2 miles to the top and back. The views are at top are amazing as you can see the whole of Honolulu and the crater. The hike is a steep in some parts and much harder in the heat. Overall I would definitely recommend everyone that is able to hike.

The views are unparalleled once you survive the trip to the top. We are in our late 50's and it is a struggle especially when you get to the steps uptop. But push on if you can it is well worth the views.

Diamond Head is an Oahu icon that mixes some of the most beautiful views from mauka to makai, interesting history, good exercise and at the end of the day.. you’re hiking a volcano (how cool is that?!).
Recommend planning ahead with plenty of water, shoes with good traction and sunscreen since you do have to work a little for the summit beauty with a steep elevation gain and you’re completely exposed to the sun almost the entire time. Going in the morning will be less hot, but is usually more crowded.
If you’re local, it’s an easy, cost-free entry at your desired time with your HI ID, but if you’re coming from the mainland or elsewhere, ensure you plan ahead and arrange your entry reservation online and determine your logistical approach (self-park vs. Uber or taxi, etc.) The parking lot in the crater can fill up quick, especially on weekends. Alternatively, you can hike in from outside the crater, but this also means a much longer outing and may fatigue those who don’t hike often.
Bottom line: Be smart with proper preparation and enjoy this Oahu must-see attraction that deserves every bit of its appeal and notoriety.

Diamond Head State Monument is an iconic natural attraction in Honolulu, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline and city skyline. The hike to the summit, spanning around 1.5 miles roundtrip, provides visitors with a rewarding experience, as they ascend through historic military tunnels and bunkers while surrounded by lush landscapes and volcanic rock formations. The trail is moderately challenging, featuring switchbacks and a final staircase climb, but the unmatched scenery makes every step worthwhile.
This historic crater, once a military lookout, is now a beloved destination for both locals and travelers. Early morning visits allow for cooler temperatures and spectacular sunrise views, while midday hikes showcase the clear, unobstructed vistas of Waikiki. While the trail can get crowded, the well-maintained paths, educational signposts, and designated viewing spots enhance the experience. Visitors should bring water, sunscreen, and proper hiking shoes for a comfortable journey.
Whether you're capturing scenic photographs, immersing yourself in Hawaiian history, or simply enjoying the fresh ocean breeze, Diamond Head State Monument remains a top-tier attraction for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and history enthusiasts alike.

Really worthwhile hike. Not overly difficult but a number of steps included. The views throughout the hike make it worth the effort, especially when you get to the top. Absolutely stunning views. Go early to avoid midday sun

Great hike although terrain uneven and multiple stairs, it was not too difficult. Amazing views from the top and on the way up and down. Recommend early in the day because there is limited shade and it’s hot. Book in advance so you can get parking at the base-otherwise parking is challenging and another hike!

Have to do it when in Hawaii!! It is a climb on a narrow but moderate path except for the last stairs-oh so many stairs!! Wear good shoes, light colored clothing, sunscreen and bring water

Just a heads up you do need to book online in advance and pay for this activity but I personally find a short hike like this is one of the best ways to view a city when visiting. Like the Grouse Grind in Vancouver, Canada or Camelback Mountain in Phoenix, Arizona this hike provides amazing views of Waikiki / Honolulu and surrounding areas.
It is going to be busy and full of tourist so if you want a more natural hike there are plenty of other places on the island to hike and experience Hawaii’s nature and views. But for a quick and easy to locate hike from Waikiki this hike is a must. The pill box and tunnel at the top was also very cool and unique.
Also for the runners out there the run from Waikiki around the base of Diamond head was a very enjoyable and challenging run with some hills and scenic views along the coast.

A nice hike ending with a fantastic view of the shoreline and the volcano crater. The hike is can be a bit crowded, and remember to bring water. We did hike all the way from Park Shore Waikiki hotel, grabbed a taxi from the crater to Kahanamoku Beach and walked the boardwalk back to the hotel. A nice walk, but doable even with children.

I've seen some people praise the place a lot, but honestly I didn't find it very funny. The way back and forth seems endless. It's a pretty considerable walk. It has a nice look up there and the bunkers used as military defense are still present on the site. I would not return.

A easy-moderate trail to get a fantastic view of the Diamond Mountains, the lighthouse, the ocean, and the city. Worth the trip. Not much hustle. Absolutely great for new hikers!
We went around 6:30 AM to see the sunrise, and it was very crowded on the top. I imagine it’d be the same case during sunset.

A great classic of Oahu: Diamond Head. There too, no surprise, a paid Reservation necessary. Paid parking, not huge and a lot of tourists. From Waikiki you can get there by bus and then on foot, nothing complicated.
Once you arrive at the foot of the climb, you discover an atmosphere of volcano crater hillsides. It falls well, that's exactly where you are... A few notches higher, you arrive at the top from where you can see Honolulu in its great width or the east side with its hillside constructions.
The little extra resides in the fort you visit from above (watch out, very tight) then you go down the floors to emerge further down. Very nice.
Indeed, this fort was the culmination of maritime surveillance of the south of the island. You can see very clearly the attachments of guns and other weapons.
It's obviously pretty, you'll make some pictures there, for sure, but with all the publicity they do, it's a bit overrated. We had prepared this ascent with trail shoes, picnic & co. Needless to say, in 2 hours it's poutze!
In short, it remains a must of the island you must visit.

I used this site to book a reservation to the state park, your representative sold me a tour with headsets and entrance to the park itself for $5.00 per-person , which there were 12 of us including grandkids. Great until we arrived and were told the vouchers sent to my phone were only good for the headsets !! We had to pay an addition $5.00 per head to enter. I went to the admission both to complain but was informed this has happened before and to cancel the headset, which she said is on record. Then contact VIATOR for a refund ,, I have attempted to get satisfaction but have been getting a big run around. NO REFUND as of yet. Don`trust the VIATOR..

The views were amazing but climbing the trail is not for the faint of heart or out of shape. Take as many breaks as you need going up and take lots of water. There is no medical up there so be sure you are ready for rough terrain. Coming down is easier and make sure you enter the bunker near the top to take the spiral stairs down a way. It is much easier to descend.

Unable to find access, there are no indications, this should be reviewed to allow access to the trail!!

We never use the headphones and should be credited for them at least $17. We did go up to Diamondhead, but we used a different pass to get in because yours would not allow us through. We did not use the auto headphones they put them back. We should be reimbursed thank you

Hiking Diamond Head was an absolutely beautiful excursion! We loved the physicality of the hike (we’re not super athletic) and loved the vistas at the top!

The hike to the top is definitely worth it. The views are spectacular. You can do it quicker than recommended or take your time and take in the views on the way. The paths are slightly uneven but there are handrails on the way. Early morning is best so it’s not as hot.

A nice relatively quick (1-1.5 hour) hike. All paved. Interesting tunnels, decent views. VERY crowded at all times. I'm sure there are better 'hikes', but this is worth doing once. Make sure you reserve ahead of time - you will not be let in without a reservation, and check in at the right location in the parking lot.
We took the trolley from Waikiki, but it only travels every hour. We waited and took it to the farmer's market (Saturday) at 11, knowing the last trolley pick up from the area was noon - to find out the farmer's market was already closed at 11 ! Instead of waiting and staring at the road for another hour, we walked back to waikiki in 45 minutes.

this a very nice park and it offers nice walk up to the top, from which you have a great view over Waikiki Beach and hotel area

A short trek (about 45-50 minutes to get to the top) with a breathtaking final view. You can park directly inside the crater (parking lot $10) and enter with a cost of $5 each. Trekking is very popular precisely because it is suitable for everyone. The course is kept really well. Near the parking lot there are bathrooms, benches and tables for eating. Molto interessante anche poter entrare in un bunker!

Diamond Head State Park was absolutely gorgeous, and the hike was definitely worth the views at the top. The trail is a moderate climb, with plenty of places to stop and take in the views. We went early in the day, and it was pretty crowded, but we were still able to get great photos. At the top, you get to see the whole of Waikiki Beach to Koko Head. Definitely bring some sun screen because there’s relatively no shade on the hike!

Diamond Head State Monument is a must-see in Oahu! The hike is moderately challenging with steep sections and stairs, but the breathtaking panoramic views of Waikiki and the Pacific Ocean at the summit make it all worthwhile. We went early to beat the crowds, which I highly recommend. Wear good shoes and bring water. Overall, a rewarding experience with incredible scenery!

It’s a hike but the views are spectacular. Path is paved for a distance but then the terrain is rocky and uneven, at the end of the hike there are approximately 100 steps to climb. With this being said my 72 year old husband did the hike and was glad he completed it. I stopped at the end of the paved portion, I had just had a knee replaced and was concerned about the uneven terrain, I had also, completed the hike on two other occasions. Recommend making reservations with a tour group since parking and park entrance is very limited. The tour company we used dropped us off and gave us two hours to complete the hike up & back before picking us up, which was an adequate amount of time.

Diamond Head is the most iconic natural feature of O'ahu and it's just a blast to be able to visit it and hike up the crater. The visitor center is located within the center of the crater and you can hike from there to the summit. It's not a super challenging hike, but you have to make sure you have proper sun protection (it is Hawai'i after all) and plenty of water. The views on the hike are spectacular and it's wonderful to be able to look down over the island and to Waikiki as well. This is a very popular hike given that it's so close to the major tourist area of O'ahu and I'd suggest coming on a weekday or early in the day to beat some of the crowds. It's an experience you won't easily forget and it's something I would do every single time I'm in O'ahu.

Quite the spectacular hike. Go prepared with water and food shoes.
Plan on spending a fair amount of time as the hike up is steep.
Make a reservation ahead of time otherwise parking is not available. You can walk in, again you need a reservation.

Once you reach the summit, the views are spectacular you can see the entire coastline, the turquoise waters, and the city of Honolulu in the distance.

The trail is well marked and mostly paved. It was crowded and difficult to get good views due to previous rains. We hiked it approx 1030-1130. Glad we did it.

Amazing views of Waikiki, great hike - go early in the day, it gets hot!
Make sure you make a reservation prior, and taking an Uber is recommended.

Dramatic views were well worth the hike in the dark. We got the parking pass and arrived a little before 6 a.m. Most of the hike up was in the dark, and there were lots of people in a hurry to race to the top. If you want to enjoy the sunrise from the summit, follow this plan.

First of all, pre book your visit on the Diamond head official website. It will give you access with parking included within the time slot you choose (or which is available). For 3 of us it costed 25$ with parking. Bring sun screen, water and hat. I climbed in flip flops, though sneakers would be better, but it was damn hot for them.
From Waikiki it's around 15 min drive.
After the parking lot there's a paved path for the first quarter of the climb. The rest is tougher, with uneven terrain, rocks, stairs,.... You should reach the summit within 40 min.
Once up you have amazing views of southern Oahu coast, with entire Honolulu skyline in front of you.
However, we found the Tantalus lookout better, because from there along with entire southern coast, you also see the whole Diamond head which is a majestic site.

Beautiful view at the top and along the way. Worth the walk. You reach the top quite in good time, the elevation increases rapidly (but not crazy). I almost didn’t want to do this hike but am so glad that I did! Went at the 7:00 slot and the sun was already out, but as we made it to the outlook areas we were greeted with beautiful views of the ocean. We lyfted there from Waikiki and walked back to the hotels at the end. The walk back was great because we were able to see so much of the city and gardens along the way. I’m not a big hiker and I liked it. Highly recommend!

My first review (on Yelp) all things stand true except a few minor changes. I still think this is a must do hike because of the views and the relative easiness due to the paved portions and staircases. Speaking of stairs, there are approximately 200 of them! I counted this time!
Parking used to be a fee, but it's now free for locals with valid ID. It's recommended that you make reservations and the entrance fee is $5 per person. Other than that, there is a limited signal inside the crater before your climb up to the top!

Hike inside the crater and then climb to the top to see the skyline of Honolulu and the whole island very beautiful I in 22 minutes I climbed to try

Wonderful view when you reach the top. This climb Is not for folks who have physical or breathing problems. A lot of the trail is natural so can be challenging if your balance is off. The climb up and back totals 1.6 miles and it’s all uphill so carrying infants isn’t a good idea especially in 80 degree weather.

The hike to the summit of Diamond Head was both exhilarating and a little tiring at times, but there were places to take a break along the way. I definitely would not recommend the hike to the summit for anyone who is out of shape or does not exercise or walk on a regular basis.

Love this walk! We did it when we’re were last staying in Oahu just before the pandemic and did it again when we were back last month. This time around though because it was October instead of December there were not nearly as many people which made it even more pleasant! With the entry fee of $10.00
It also doesn’t matter what time you make your reservation for they will let you in. We learnt the hard way as last time you didn’t need a reservation. We had to drive back out make a reservation online first available one was several hours later but that didn’t matter.

We visited Diamond Head with a tour group (we were traveling as part of a high school music department group), so we did not have to make arrangements ourselves. I cannot speak of the parking or reservation process, since those were handled by the tour company.
We visited Diamond Head in the afternoon, which was not awesome. It was hot and it wasn't long after we had eaten lunch. The hike was quite steep and uneven, so I was glad that I had sneakers on, though hiking shoes would have been better. If you are at all claustrophobic, the tunnel will feel like a little slice of Hell. Admittedly, I am not in the best shape, and I wish I had paused a few minutes to catch my breath before walking through the tunnel. I was starting to panic in the tunnel because I couldn't see the end of it climbing up, as it takes a turn to the left at the end. My younger daughter and I were the slowest in our family, so once we did get out of the tunnel, we both needed time to catch our breath and (in my case) calm down before we could continue to the top.
When I did reach the top, I appreciated the beautiful views, but it was crowded with lots of people and I saw a few teens (not from our tour group) who hopped over the fence to get better selfies or something, I guess. I half-expected to watch one of them fall to their death. Fortunately, that didn't happen, but it was disappointing to see people disregard basic safety rules.
The hike back down was easier, but hard on the knees. There are some lovely shaded spots at the bottom of the trail with benches, so we spent a little time there relaxing before it was time to leave. We saw some birds and a mongoose, so that was pretty cool.
I have hiked up Diamond Head once and that was enough.

Amazing views, worth the hike. Definitely make reservations ahead of time and try and go as early as possible. The trail is not technical or very long, but can be a little uneven. It's very narrow, steep and crowded. The only bathrooms are at the trail head and you can buy and refill water bottles there too.

Nice walk up a small hill with gentle slopes and staircases. I suggest wearing a sun hat because it got very hot when we went. Be sure to reserve your tickets for timed entry through the state park's online reservation system before you get to the park because there is no entry without them. There are nice views from the top of the monument. We did not go through the interior exhibits. The only visitor center we found seemed to be the kiosk gift shop.

This is a great hike with many scenic views. The footing on the trails is very good and hiking shoes are not necessary. Unlike some trails I have hiked on, there are no drop offs which which I appreciated. Even though the trail was crowded, it was easy to navigate, easy to pass people who were going slower, and easy for people to pass us. The hike back down to the bottom was also very safe. Highly recommend the Diamond Head hike while in Oahu!

This is a must-do but it's a really strenuous walk, so take it slow if you need to. I'd definitely go earlier in the morning if possible and take some water with me. The views are outstanding and the air is crisp. It's probably very hot in the middle of the day, so I'd avoid that time if you can. You need a reservation by the way, so be mindful of that as you're planning. Wear comfortable shoes or hiking boots, and just have some fun. It's gorgeous at the top.

Going up and down is easy. Trail is well maintain. Best for youngsters. This is a must while in Hawaii while on vacation. Just Amazing!

Diamond Head is a relatively easy hike if you are young and healthy. It’s about a mile from the trailhead to the summit, about 45 minutes each way if you’re stopping for water and photos. But if you have trouble with steps, are unstable in your footing or have heart issues, this is one you should probably skip. Even at 8:00 am it’s quite hot and there are many, many stairs. The stone pathway is uneven and can be slippery with sand and pebbles, although there are metal handrails most of the way. There are shady areas and a few benches along the way, but restrooms and water are only at the bottom. I did not see any rangers or park personnel along the way, although the trail was quite crowded, so you don’t need to worry about being lost or alone. The views along the way are almost as gorgeous as the views from the summit: you see the entire crater ringed by volcanic crests, plus a nice panorama of Waikiki. One warning: cell phone service is fine up at the top, but nonexistent inside the bottom of the crater, where the trail begins. I took an organized trip from Go Tours Hawaii, which was worth the money because city buses don’t access the site and a taxi or Uber from Waikiki would have been more expensive – and Go Tours also takes care of the reservations and admission tickets. They left plenty of time to hike to the top and back, with extra for resting and refreshments at the bottom. Note that the trolleys are not air-conditioned and have very hard, wooden bench seats.

This is a nice place to visit for a hike up to the DiamondHead crater. The monument entrance area has a visitor center, and park benches & tables for those who don’t wish to partake of the hike and would rather wait for their companions to come back down. Restrooms are also available. Entrance to the monument/hike is by timed reservations online.

Amazing climb for an awesome view. Must be in fair shape as it is cardio intensive. Easiest way is to book online direct and make sure you get your passes and if you have a rental car, book the parking. Will save you some walking before the climb.

Must do in comfy shoes! The trail, the scene, the top, was all amazing! Easy to walk and just plain beautiful! Went on a nice, clear, and windy day so while it was hot, it also wasn't.

Well worth the physical workout getting up to the top. We wish we would have started earlier in the morning due to heat and crowds. We took the trolley up and back to Waikiki. It took about an hour round trip. We were lucky to have a clear time of day where we could see so far out, because most days it will get misty at some point and visibility may be limited briefly. So glad we did this. MAKE RESERVATIONS ahead of time because it is required. $5 great value though.

We arrived from the East Coast US the day before and chose the 8-10am time slot for our reservation, figuring our jet lagged bodies would wake us up in plenty of time!
This worked out well! There were restrooms and water bottle filling stations that we took advantage of before and after our hike! We’re not a hiking family (it was my husband and I and daughters 15 and 12) , but we found this hike doable, with places to rest and hydrate and even a lookout point along the way where we stopped to rest and get a great picture! It wasn’t too crowded when we were there either! There isn’t much shade, but fortunately the 8-10 time slot wasn’t too hot! We got great pictures and we finished the hike in a bit over an hour! We stopped for a sample of Dole Whip topped with fresh pineapple and my youngest got shave ice at the food trucks at the base of the hike!

We read that you should get their early, then wait for the crowds to thin out -- spot-on advice! The walk and climb are not bad, and well worth it

For a small fee it’s definitely worth doing it but last entry was 4 pm so be aware. 2 miles up and down and tough in the heat so plan the time of day you go. Spectacular views and quite busy
Definitely worth doing

It is a long walk with beautiful views. The walkway is concrete, and you will have several stairs to climb.

Bring water, good shoes, a hat, sunscreen and patience! The reward is at the very top but the views along the way are stunning too. We enjoyed a cool breeze as we completed the switchback summit to the peak of Diamond Head. You must make a reservation on the state's website, the State ensures there are only so many entries per hour and the trail closes at 2 due to a current project to reinforce the area. The trail was packed on a Saturday which is to be expected but the fellow hikers were pleasant and patient as I'm not the fastest hiker.
Be sure to wear good shoes and watch were you step! The majority of the hike is paved but as you progress towards the top you find the trail has eroded and it's not a smooth path. There are hand rails and short tunnels that provide relief along the way. The true reward is at the very top where you enjoy a view that can't be beat!

Great hike! I would suggest good tennis shoes or hiking shoes. Buy tickets before you get there, as our time slot was 11am and not as crowded. Some of the terrain was slippery and rugged. If you are afraid of heights, this may be a bit much for you. We enjoyed it!

Need reservations from Hawaii state park srevice! Be prepared to walk up the side of the crater. Great view from the top. Bring water, take your time.

Once you make it to the top the view is amazing and totally worth the climb. A couple of things you should be aware of: 1. You need to book online and pick a time slot. 2. The morning is cooler to climb rather than the afternoon. 3. Take water and a hat 4. Know your physical ability- it’s a good hike but if you’re not fit or have any medical conditions I would reconsider hiking to the top - there are stops along the way but there are also a lot of stairs and can get quite crowded.

Traveled here with my son and his family. We did this hike on our first day (two boys 12 and 4). It looks super intimidating, but as long as you stop and rest and drink water when needed, it isn't bad. It's not a race, so take your time and enjoy the hike. The view from the top is worth it.
There are stairs in places, but mostly it is a rocky trail. Lots of beautiful vistas! Enjoy!

It's always good to go early for the sun. It's not a very heavy hike, but you definitely need to have a bit of condition. You can go at your own pace, so once inside it is good to take your time going up.
We take the green trolley in the morning, which leaves every hour and after departure we also return in it.

This was a great uphill and downhill hike to the peak of Diamond Head. It is a little more strenuous on the morning with the sun beating down on the hillside facing the east and south. Trail gets a little rocky and steep as you get more than 1/4 the way up . Wear good hiking type shoes, bring water , a hat and sunglasses. It does get a little crowed at the top too.

This is one of my highlight of this trip! Fantastic views if/once u reach the top. Not for the physically handicap & no bathroom along the way once u start. It took us approx. 45 mins to reach the peak

Each morning, hundreds of tourists embark on the not-too-arduous but hot journey to this iconic landmark of Honolulu.
That’s a stunning climb and you’d need a QR code (by reservation at the website) to enter. The timing slot of the booking isn’t too strict but I guess you have to go on the same day (but not necessarily the exact hour).
Most guidebooks suggest early morning (to beat the hot temperatures and crowd). I won’t argue but the crater would have been better from photographer’s viewpoint in the afternoon.

Awesome trail/ hike to the top. Gorgeous views. Not too rough but definitely were panting a little! Places to stop and sit along the way.

I went there on Tuesday Afternoon February 20 2024 after booking my online reservation which costs $5 + a fee which makes The price $6.15 for one person & gets you a one hour time slot.It was hot so bring sunscreen & water the trailer gets progressively twisty narrow & vertical leading up to The Top.I recommend that you might want to go earlier as some of the people doing this walk weren't exactly quick or in this best shape.I could've made it up to the Summit & back in about 40 minutes if there wasn't slow people that wouldn't move aside. On a scale I think this is a fair challenge but I think it isn't as tough as going up The Law in North Berwick in Scotland Diamond Head & The Law are both of a similar height Diamond Head is just a bit over a Hundred + feet higher but there's no steps to lead you to the Apex at The North Berwick Law & Hill Of The Cross in Holguin Southern Cuba now those massive steps now those make that a workout & then some on a hot day there.

Another must do for Oahu! Reserve your ticket to get there as early as possible as it heats up quickly after 11 AM! The hike is not that hard and the view, we’ll just wait for it, beautiful!

Unstable route but simple mount. (I recommend not to put new shoes) everything is presented on this route to the top .. To admire the crater, you will have to use a lot of imagination to see it, but the view is very beautiful. Make the ticket online because it will not be possible to do it on site..

This was a great place to take breath taking photos. I suggest going early to avoid the heat of the day. We started outside at the lookout for sunrise then the walk up the crater. It was a great experience.

A great hike for nearly everyone. Highly recommend you do this hike in the early morning as it works be really hot during the day. It also does get quite crowded in the trail particularly at the lookouts and at the top with people wanting to take photos.
A few tips:
- wear sturdy shoes
- bring a hat
- sunscreen is a must
- plenty of water
There are a number of places along the trail to get great photos but particularly in busy areas make sure you get your photos and move on to allow others to take theirs.
When on the trail, if you are a little slower than others then let them pass to avoid any mishaps.
It’s a relatively easy hike but there are parts where it’s uneven footing and lots of stairs towards the top.
Highly recommend you turn left at the T section to see some great sights then head up to the summit. There’s also an old fort that you can go into. At the back there is a spiral staircase that takes you down and leads out to the states at the T intersection to go back down.

I went to THE BUS at number two. However, please be aware that the route may change on Saturdays. If you want to use THE BUS, we recommend you check it in advance on THE BUS website.
"You might think, "It's hard to walk from the bus stop on Diamond Head Rd,"" but it's not that far or up the tunnel to the toll booth, so I think it's OK (my personal opinion)."
Mountaineering has been a long time coming for a fee ($5), but please make reservations online in advance.
Before you start climbing (although it's only a "mountain walk"), it's a good idea to use the public toilet (larger) on your right hand side, past the toll booth. There is also a bench in front of the toilet, so you can start by breathing.
One thing to be aware of is shoes. Sometimes beach sandals are better, but they can hurt your finger groin, so you should definitely avoid them. And water. One plastic bottle per person is all that is needed. It's best to have a towel to wipe off sweat, but that's not such a priority.
There are also benches along the way, so you can take a break and walk.
Through the tunnel, there are two routes: up the steep yellow staircase (tight) or walk around the perimeter (loose). Personally, I prefer the perimeter course because it has a better view.
At the top, there is a gazebo with a space of about six tatami mats above and below.
I think you should watch the 90-minute round trip from the public toilets below to the top and back.
It should be noted that there is KCC (Kapiolani Community College) downstairs and across Diamond Head Rd, and there is a farmers market on Saturday mornings, so you can enjoy both climbing Diamond Head and the market.
I recommend climbing Diamond Head early in the morning, getting off the mountain and eating instead of brunch at the farmers market.

East to get to on the bus and then an easy walk to the park entrance. Don’t forget to pay / buy your park entry beforehand on line. A 45 to 60 minute walk to get to the top to enjoy great views over Waikiki and crater.

A great hike for beginners. Many stunning views of the Waikiki area. I would not bring small children unless you want to carry them part of the way. Go early if you can. It gets hot in the afternoon and you will have to work a little harder. I highly recommend.

The #1 thing you need to know is to get your $5 admission ticket before you go. There are no cash sales. Although tickets are timed on our day the time was irrelevant. We got out ticket using a park employee's Wifi hot spot. (Big thanks to him). Our ticket was for 4.30pm though we entered at about 11.30am.
We walked from Waikiki along Montserrat and it took about 1.15 to get to crater. Our up and back down was about a further 1.15.
Otherwise a good walk and all other advice about good shoes, water, sun block and hats from others is fully endorsed by me.

The views are worth the hike! Just push through the steep hike. The first part of the hike is uneven ground, so watch your footing. The second part is stairs. Take breaks and bring water and a hat. The heat made the hike pretty sweaty. There is a long tunnel you have to walk through before ascending the final staircase. It has little lighting and is fairly narrow, if you have any fears of tight spaces, it’s something to think about. I have terrible knees and managed to get through the hike within an hour (that’s up and down).

This was a wonderful hike with gorgeous views. It was not too strenuous but did require good footing and the ability to climb multiple sets of stairs. There was a good breeze and a lot of friendly folks on the trail with us.

This is a great hike for the family. Our nine year old son had no issues making it to the summit. Great views once you reach the top!

Been a long time since I last hiked up Diamond Head, took wife and kids this time, worth the visit. Make reservations for parking, unless you can walk in or take bus. Take water, its a good hike and had me puffing by the time I got to the top. Great view, people from different countries all hitting the trail.

This mountain is a true test of strength, determination and stamina. It is worth every step!
Don’t give up, the view is worth it.

My fear of heights was never triggered on this hike. There was a clearly designated, safely walled paved path, and fencing at critical points. We booked an 8 am climb on-line. Much of the path was shadowed by the mountain at this time, so we kept cool. I can imagine that a hike at noon would be intense. The gradual incline gave us a sense of how we should probably be working out more - my husband and I, that is - our four daughters, ages 12-20, flew up past us. There was a point, just out of the tunnel, before the final ascent, where one must choose left or right. Right takes the hiker to a very tall set of metal stairs constructed at an incline of 88 degrees. By that point, it was a challenge for me to muster the strength to continue on level ground. So we travelled left for and easier route upwards. I highly recommend this hike. The view at the top, is spectacular!

We went hiking to Diamond Head with my friends and it was so fun. Not too hard but the view from the top was great! The best hiking course in hawaii.

Not an easy hike and I did stop for a few breaks but it was worth the hike and stairs. The view is amazing!! It also is a very busy nonstop hike route with lots of people so let the fast hikers go if you want to go at your own pace. Definitely wear good shoes for stairs and uneven terrain.

Amazing view at the top of the hiking spot. We signed up directly through the diamond head website. You need to wear sunscreen- there is barely any shade on the path. Plus it is pretty long hike up- crossing little water crevices and going on very uneven terrain. Also you must bring water to stay hydrated. If you can, I would recommend booking early in morning/on coolest day you can for the trip! It was worth the journey to the top though!

We got great views and a feeling of accomplishment from climbing to the summit of Diamond Head. It is certainly strenuous, but you can do it if you can walk up a slope and climb stairs. The lowest part of the hike is a paved path. After that, it's a pathway carved into the rock, with occasional stairways. The rock surface is uneven in some places, but there is a handrail, so I never had any problems. We saw all ages, young and old making the climb. On the way up, we met a man of 72, who had reached the summit and was coming back down.
You need to go to the web site of the Hawaii State Parks to reserve a time slot. You will need to show your reservation when you enter the park. I recommend printing a hard copy of the reservations. Most cell phones do not have bars; we had to get temporary wifi access from a ranger. Try to reserve early or late in the day. All we could get was noon to 2:00, when the Sun was highest. There was no shade, so i'm glad my sunscreen was effective!

This amazing view!!!!
I've been to Oahu twice (2013 and 2019) and every time I've seen Diamond Head!!! It takes a good half hour to get to the top. It's not without effort, but you can't just eat and lie on the beach on vacation. The view is definitely more than a reward, and not just of Honolulu, but of Diamond Head itself! Most of the path is shady, so it's a good idea to visit the volcano at lunchtime. Just make sure you have drinks with you.
After the descent, there's a shaved ice stand down below! 😉🍧
I'd love to see a sunset from there, but unfortunately that's not possible because the path is partly unpaved and of course unlit.

It was a great experience. Do the hike in the morning as it gets pretty warm! We saw people from all ages hiking. Older folks had to stop some more and rest, and there were some places to sit in the shade along the hike up. Be aware that parking is first come first served. There were no spots available for us, so we had to go down the street and walk and extra mile because of it. The views were breathtaking!

Hiking Diamond Head is a little challenging but totally doable. Absolutely worth it!!! The views from the top are so amazing.

The hike was very fun and not to difficult. Top to bottom took us a total of one and a half hours. View was great. We arrived 15 minutes before our reservation time but were allowed in. My only negative comment is the amount of trash that people leave behind. We carried out as much as we could, but people need to leave no trace!

The hills and stairs on the way are pretty tight, but you forget all about them when you see the amazing scenery. Thickness measures are essential in summer. Hat, water, towels, etc.

Beautiful place with unreal views and photo opportunities. Would recommend doing the hike early for 2 reasons. 1. Before the crowds, trail is narrow and i assume it slows down because of traffic. 2. The heat, it’s a very uphill climb, best to do it when the temp is reasonable. Be prepared for some steep stairs and climbs. Well worth the effort, and there are lots of places to stop and rest if you need to.

Beautiful climb on the crater...remember to book! As well as parking...otherwise you be can not go home or park!!!! The end is a bit rough but what a panorama on arrival!!!

We actually climbed Diamond Head years ago (on our first visit to Oahu). We are currently on Oahu for Christmas and with the cloudy days, we thought about climbing it again. That’s when we discovered that you have to have reservations. Also, my hubby was reading something about you having to be done with the hike by the end of your reservation. And there are no refunds. So if I chose a time and it was raining (as it did on our first day here- flooded) I’m guessing we’d be out of luck. Also, the reservation time isn’t much longer than the suggested time for the hike. That’s fine, provided the person hiking can do it. What about someone who isn’t in the best of physical condition? Or the person who has had double knee replacement and even a knee revision? That’s me. Back in January, I had knee revision surgery. I can hike it but would probably take longer than the reservation allows. I had my first knee replacement in 2013 and in less than a year, I did the first hike up Diamond Head. I fear these new rules they have in place will stop a lot of people from being able to catch some
breathtaking view from atop this volcano.

Definitely book your spot ahead of time there were several people there being turned away because they didn’t know you had to book ahead of time. I went early on a Saturday (6am) in April and it was great got to see the sunrise and it wasn’t to hot for the climb up but it did start to get hot on the way down. It was a challenging hike up for me but totally worth it for that view.

The hike will take around 30-35 minutes. As an advice, bring at least 1 to 1.5 liters of water and have some sunscreen. Good shoes are also recommended. The view is well worth the 5$ and the ascension

This is a great hike but caution to those who have difficulty getting around. I was there with my daughter & I am a 62 year old that has knee problems but am very active so thought I could do this, no problem. I read the description of the hike & thought I’ll just wear my knee sleeve & take it slow & I’ll be ok. While the description mentions steep stairs what it doesn’t tell you is that sometimes you are walking on rocks (no stairs) & there is not a handrail on both sides so when we were coming down if someone was coming up & using the handrail on their side, there was nothing for me to hang on to. If I visit again (with my husband) I’ll let him do the hike & I’ll wait at the bottom

Diamond Head State Monument was a great afternoon hike. We started at the visitor center and did the crater summit trail. It was challenging for me but I am 61 and in just ok shape. It is listed as a moderate hike. We were advised to skip the last set of stairs and do the longer but more gradual trail to the top. This was good advice! Stunning views and because we did it in the later afternoon we enjoyed some shade on the way down.

Did the hike with some family ranging from 25 to 55 years old. It was a bit of an effort, but so worth it!! The views are amazing.
If you're on the fence about whether or not you can physically do this hike... my wife and I are 55 and 54, and kind of overweight and out of shape and we were able to do it. Not saying it was easy, we were definitely wiped out but we did it. That said, during the hike, I was passed by a pregnant woman in open toe sandals and children running up the mountain lol. So if you are young and fit I suspect this will be even more fun for you!!

it was very busy, but everybody seemed to have a good time it was good exercise, beautiful location, and a nice day. It was cheap fun time.

Not worth the visit, a dry hot place where you have to book in advance to be able to walk around in the volcanic crater. You can drive up to the guard and turn around, which is more than enough

Not a bad hike. Please wear comfortable shoes. Saw too many people in slides or flip flops.
Very crowded at the top, but worth the views!

Went online to book the entrance ticket, usd5 per adult for the 7 am slot. Took Uber here. Then upon checking in, went up the trail. It was a gentle steep climb upwards. Just 10 minutes before reaching the summit, we had to climb up a few dozen steps. That was indeed challenging. At the lookout points, we stopped for a rest and took photos. Beautiful scenery. We also saw the buildings at Waikiki beach area. At the summit, we saw the Diamond Head crater.

We went up around 7:30 a.m. and it was perfect
Quite a few steps but totally doable
It took us 1h30 round trip

Go early! We went on Memorial Day and it wasn’t crazy populated. However, take water and prepare for a steep climb. The terrain is landscaped and you won’t trip.
Coming down the tunnel got backed up and that was a bit claustrophobic, but other than that definitely worth experiencing.

Very particular and crowded place, but once you reach the top, you can enjoy a splendid view that covers 2 coasts of the island.
For the price and the result, worth trying

The climb is doable, but strenuous. Remember to wear sun protection and good shoes, as well as plenty of water. The view is great. Be sure to book your tickets and parking space online beforehand. Otherwise you'll have to turn around and parking spaces are limited. We were there in the morning, around 10 a.m., and had no problems with crowds.

Great Hike with amazing views. Diamond head is, of course, iconic. We hiked up using the city pass to book our transportation and park ticket. We had two hours to complete it. But at a fairly easy pace, we completed up to the top, taking pictures at the top and down again in 70 minutes. My Teen boys said the difficulty was a 4 while my husband and I found a 6-6.5.
Not a rustic trail, uneven surface during the trail so be cautious.
Views were spectacular.

Excellent walk with reasonably good facilities. The track is in good condition and well maintained. Easy to get to but a reasonable amount of fitness required to get to the top. The views are worth it.

People say this is an “ easy “ hike it is in some ways but it makes you work for the amazing views. There are several places to stop and take a water break. Bring water it gets hot going up. When you get through the tunnel go left unless you want to climb 90 stairs almost straight up. The views are amazing.

In my opinion this is a must do if you visit the island.
There are tons of reviews, I just want to add make reservations!!!
I about waited to long and only got hiking passes (barely). I could not get the parking pass. I had to park at the zoo and take an uber in to be dropped off.
There is signal inside the crater so you can get signal out for a return trip. There was also plenty of taxi cabs waiting if you rather do that.
Don’t wait make a reservation by the time i paid for travel I could have bought 4 parking passes. :)
Highly recommend.
Happy Travels.

A must see when visiting Honolulu.
Read first: Book a reservation in advance. It costs $5 / person.
Don’t pay a tour company to take you to Diamond Head. If you’re staying in Waikiki, take a local bus ($3/person/trip). The no. 2 line bus dropped us at teh Leahi Millennium Peace Garden just outside the park. From that drop off point the official park entrance is exactly 1/2 mile.
The hike to the summit is a 4/10 for intensity and difficulty. From where the bus dropped us off and back was 3.4 miles with 682 feet of elevation gain (I logged the hike on my Garmin Fenix 3 watch). If you’re obese or crippled, think about skipping the hike. Wear good shoes and socks. Use sunscreen and wear at hat. Bring 2 bottles of water if you’re hiking at any time other than dawn.
The views from the summit are incredible.
If you like birds and animals pay attention. The cardinals are beautiful and have personality, and you may encounter a mongoose looking for a handout.

We visited diamond head and it was a great hike. Not too hard but very windy at the top. Make sure to hang on to your hat and glasses. The history was great and we made it up in about a half hour. The views were great and picturesque

We completed Diamond Head on New Years Eve with 3 young children. My husband and I did not pack sneakers and other reviews we read warned against wearing flip-flops or jandals or crocs. It was absolutely fine to wear beach footwear for this walk. Wanted to post this here to help others in our position. Took 7000 steps to complete and in just over an hour with a 5 year old, 4 year old and 2 year old. Beautiful views at the top. Just a little crowded. Highly recommend!

This, to me, is a 'must do' activity while on Oahu. I have been hiking Diamond Head since I was a pre-teen (we visit Hawaii often!). As a 50 yr old, it is getting more challenging! But, this is still a great hike! My 12 yrs old had no issues--in fact, she was ahead and waiting for me!
To get to Diamond Head, we took the #2 bus from Waikiki (Kuhio Road). Didn't take too long--maybe a 10-min bus ride. Short walk up the entrance.
Nowadays, one must pre-book a ticket to hike. One hour time slot. Tickets were easy to purchase online. $5 for the hike per person. To be honest, it was ok. I was skeptical about needing to buy a ticket as we used to be able to simply 'show up'. While it was still busy, it seemed less busy. And, that was appreciated. Parking lot was not even full--I have never seen that happen!
There are bathrooms (with flush toilets) at the beginning of the hike. Clean!
The first portion of the hike is paved. The latter portion is not 'paved' and offers some uneven and, at times, rocky terrain. One can hike in flip flops but I would not recommend it. We wore running shoes.
Bring water as it was hot! (Water fountain at base of hike, too.)
This is a steeper hike. Bit tiring. A number of stairs.
The views are worth it, though!
Take your time...and enjoy!
(While one can easily walk back to Waikiki, a bus arrived as we began walking...so, we jumped on!)

This was my second time to hike to the top of Diamond Head. First time I was in my late 30s this time I was 73. It was more difficult this time, but I made it to the top and have pictures to prove it. People along the trail are encouraging others to continue. There are areas to sit and rest and catch your breath. Such incredible views of Honolulu and the Pacific Ocean.

The walk up was not easy but the views were worth the hike. Stop as often as needed to catch your breath and drink plenty of water. It is worth the hike beautiful views at the top.

Bring lots and lots of water. So many reviews called this easy. I'm in decent shape, and I found it challenging in some areas. There is almost zero shade and the benches you can stop at are metal. Everything was hot and I ran out of water fast. If you are claustrophobic, be aware that there is a small tunnel to walk through as well. Overall though, it's worth the view. Absolutely stunning at the top!

We wanted to go on this hike but found out, to my chagrin, that you needed tickets in advance. We were with a rather large group and not enough tickets were available. The group split into two, with one group going at 6:30 a.m. what's the top comment it was spectacular! But be forewarned it is uphill all the way.

This is well worth while. Go as early in the morning as possible due to the heat. Also prebook your time before your arrival online. It is quite annoying getting there & having to book it on your phone we found our cellphone coverage wasn’t great so made it a bit cumbersome & frustrating. The view is magnificent and the hike isn’t too bad. It looks a lot worse looking up from Waikiki than it actually is.

We did the sunrise hike (reservations necessary) and started in the dark. The trail is slightly uneven and tight in places, but overall not too terrible if you're in decent shape. The experience of watching the light slowly appear and then sunrise is beautiful. Summit views are fantastic and well worth the effort. Some tight spaces near the top as well as some crazy stairs. Must do if staying near/in Waikiki.

The views at the top were amazing and it was worth the hike, but it was definitely a make hike. The trail started with flat sidewalk but transitions to uneven rock. There's handrails all the way up. The last leg has stairs. I'm not very fit and had to stop often but people coming down offered encouragement regularly, which motivated me to keep going!

The view from the top and even from along the bottom is amazing, but a couple things to note. Even though I think it is less than a 2 mile hike (either one-way or altogether, I can't recall), a lot of that walk is at an incline. While the hike isn't bad in that there are railings once you start getting to inclined areas, and there are not a lot of stairs until you really get near the top, the hike is mostly at an incline; you are climbing the side of a crater. The incline never gets really steep, but it can be challenging depending on how active/fit you usually are. Sometimes the path is rugged/rocky due to some erosion so make sure you can handle walking on uneven surfaces and if you can, plan to do the hike in the morning before the heat gets too bad. We did the hike at about 8 am and still worked up a sweat between the natural incline walking and stairs. Also pack light, but DEFINITELY pack water. We had about two regular water bottles that we drank during the hike and then got another drink from a vending machine once we had made it back to the parking lot/ gift shop area. Once again, I highly recommend this activity. I, myself, am not usually a hiker and my 69 year-old mother definitely isn't a hiker but we were able to make it to the top of the Diamond Head trail (though I think she'll never quite forgive for making her make such a hike). Definitely a worthwhile activity, just be prepared and ready to burn some calories. Also there is a part of a trail that goes through a tunnel. It is not difficult to go through, but it is dark and it takes a few minutes to walk through the tunnel, so keep that in mind too. Finally, YOU HAVE TO RESERVE A TIME AND DATE BEFOREHAND. You can't just show up to hike whenever, you have to reserve a time beforehand for like $5-$11.

Such a great hike with amazing views the whole hike took about an hour definitely wear good shoes there are several spots where you have to climb stairs but it’s definitely worth it for the views at the top make sure to get your tickets in advance

The consensus here on TA is accurate. It's a bucket-list view. We went for the 9-10 a.m. window, and in late Feb. it wasn't too busy. You'll never be alone on the trail, though.
We were going to take the bus, but ended up in a cab. Good thing: cab took us uphill to the tunnel entrance (some cabs went through) and the bus wouldn't have.
Entering was easy, first part of walk was a good warmup. Then switchbacks to get us really ready for The Stairs. My asthmatic wife had to take some breaks here but was otherwise OK.
There aren't that many of them, and you get a break halfway up. A sign recommends the longer, easier trail to the left for the ascent; we agree - and there are views that way you won't get otherwise.
From the summit, you can enter the bunkers and find the spiral ladder down to the stairs. It's a bit of a squeeze, but 6' 74-year-old not-very-flexible me got through and you can too.
DO follow their advice - take LOTS of water, sunscreen, and a good hat. Maybe a shell in case of a shower (possible) or strong wind (almost certain).
We took the #2 bus back into town. The stop's right there at the base of the hill after you exit the tunnel. Reminder: use the washrooms at the visitor center!

Couple in earlier 30s.
Great climb not too difficult with steps and path full way up.. Great addition seeing the bunkers.
Top views of islands.

Wonderful hike up to the top that will give you the most spectacular views. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and take your time. Starts our paved and then gets uneven. The top will test your cardio, but so worth it.

Moderate hike with some more difficult steep parts. Beautiful views at the top. It is a very busy hike so expect to be surrounded by people often. Also we finished the hike around 3pm and they were already closing the gift shop at the front (which was a shame as we got engaged at the top, and would have loved some memorabilia!). Overall really nice hike

One of the most beautiful spots to get a great view of Waikiki and the coast. The short hiking trail is also suitable for small children. Parking is available on site. Attention - it must be reserved when you want to take the way to the lookout. You then have 2 hours in the timeslot to make the hike and take enough pictures. Toilets are available as are vending machines with drinks.
Vei rain the path can be a bit slippery, suitable footwear is mandatory. Diamond Head always a must on Oahu.

I would recommend going early in the morning before it gets too hot. The hike was very challenging for me. It’s a very uneven and rocky path so you really have to constantly watch your step. I was exhausted about 3/4 of the way up but I sat and rested for a good 10 minutes at one of the lookouts. Then I was able to join my family and finish the hike. The top was amazing.

Fabulous Views! Beautiful Hike! Make reservations and go early. Take your time, Rest when needed, drink lots of water!

What an amazing place! Its a bit of a hike up to the top, but it is well worth it. It is not handicap excessible, there is no ramps or elevators and it is mostly a dirt/rock path. So if you have trouble walking I would not do this hike. There is a couple of different lookouts from the top. One looks down at a lighthouse and the other is a view of Honolulu and it is magnificent. There are bathrooms and a small gift store to buy water/rain ponchoes and snacks, along with t-shirts, umbrellas, hats... I so loved this hike, its a must see if you are in the area. Oh BTW there is a uber/lift/bus stop at the entrance.

The Stairway To Heaven (a.k.a. The Haiku Stairs) may be permanently closed, but there's another way to get there or at least 762 ft in the sky - by hiking Diamond Head.
One of the most spectacular times to hike and arrive at the peak of Diamond Head is just before sunrise - the sight that awaits you will be one of, if not the most memorable during your visit to O'ahu.
The park is open from 06:00 to 18:00, seven days a week; however, I would advise arriving at 05:45 at the latest, as it takes 10-15 minutes to walk from the tunnel entrance to the ticket gate. It costs $5 for a single-entry and out-of-state visitors to Hawaii must make a reservation via The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources website.
The 1.6 miles roundtrip hike will be in darkness (so bring a torch with you), but is safe to do as it begins with a gentle incline on a concrete path, has barriers / hand-rails where needed, and is well trodden. The path gradually gets steeper culminating in 233 steps to the summit! Trust me, the burn is worth it. Once you're at the top, grab your preferred view point and wait for something truly stunning to commence.

Beautiful scenery but tougher than expected. I had done research and was preparing for the steps, heat and sun. The incline is constant and the terrain rough. Be prepared!!

Like many popular tourist destinations, a reservation system was implemented to try to minimize the crowd size. We knew the hike will not be a peaceful one, but that is not what we expected anyway. It is Waikiki, everywhere will be crowded. Got our time slot online, recommendation is to go as early as possible.
It was an easy Uber ride, dropped us right at the taxi stand area. One note on that, cell service is very spotty in the crater, when we called for Uber ride to return to Waikiki, we got off and on service. Luckily we got a ride, and was able to find out pickup is on the other side of the tunnel (short walk from taxi stand)
The hike would be considered easy for us. Starts out paved. Then turns uneven but still a well maintained trail. A lot of shades in the morning, which was a welcomed surprise. Hot hot hot!
Some impressive elevation gain, with steep steps. There is a loop towards the top, definitely follow that and veer to the left. Many stopping points if you need to rest. Lookouts and the view at the top, worth every minute of the hike.
We patiently waited to get to the top platform, amazing photo opportunities indeed! Getting down you duck below a large rock, descend the small spiral staircase. This is not well advertised, at least not to us. We discovered it by accident. Two tunnels somewhat lit, we brought a headlamp to use as flashlight. Your phone will probably do just fine.
Nice bucket list item checked!

WARNING!
you must go on line and secure a reservation to enter the park EVEN AS A WALKER!
I walked 3km from Waikiki looking forward to what had been described as a “must do” locals and tourists alike.
At no stage was I warned to reserve entry so I was surprised to be blocked at the gate.
I had my $5 entry fee (that was the only obvious requirement I could see on the park website) but was told quite rudely by the angry guy on the gate the next available tickets were for Wednesday (today is Saturday)
I politely explained my predicament and explained I was taking a 6km round walk to see the view but again, and this time in a more aggressive manner I would not be allowed to enter.
Disappointed and a little taken aback by the attitude of the guy I walked away.
A couple were approaching with their teenage son and the my enquired what had happened and they explained they didn’t have reservations either.
But, they decided to try band they were admitted!
I approached the gate again and asked if a similar exception could be made to allow me access?
The rude guy replied he wasn’t the guy who the exception and to step away.
Very disappointed and very surprised by the lack of Aloha by the person at the gate.
Be warned!

The view from above is superb!
There were people with sandals and Crocs, but I still recommend sneakers.
We made it to the top in about 30 to 40 minutes, taking a break on the way.
There is also a Waikiki Trolley from Waikiki to the entrance, so it is convenient.

Make reservations as early as possible. Currently the park closes at 2 pm due to some construction projects. The hike can be strenuous; steep grades, lots of steps, a tunnel and uneven rock and dirt trail surfaces. The trail will be crowded going up and down. Wear sturdy hiking ready shoes and take water. The views from each observation area are just stunning! Be patient and courteous as everyone wants to take pictures!

We had a 3:00 reservation for Diamond Head that we made weeks in advance. You will not be allowed to enter without a reservation. There were a lot of stairs to climb to get to the top, but the views were stunning. I guess I had no idea that Diamond Head was used by the military at one time, so I learned quite a bit about that. There is a spiral staircase in one section and some lighted tunnels.

The hike was pretty easy. I saw hikers from all sorts of ages from 4 year olds to people if their 70’s. It seemed like it used to be all paved but over time it has deteriorated but still continues to be a steady and even. There’s no rocks to climb over. The beginning of it is definitely paved and about half way up it no longer a is but still even. I didn’t take my mom because she has bad knees but she definitely could’ve done it at her own pace. The stairs are steep and to get to the look out at top it’s more like a ladder. Both is them are at the end of the hike and if it’s too difficult there’s a lookout just before the stairs and the view is almost at the top and very pretty. You must do a reservation online at the parks website or else you won’t be allowed in. You can reserve entrance per person and a parking space or if parking is sold out you can reserve your entrance only. Parking was sold out when I wanted to go even on a Tuesday at 6am. I parked on the street just outside the park which was just about an 8 minute walk to the park kiosk entrance. We took about an 1.5 hours to hike in and out and wonder around the top fort and visitors center so it’s not a long hike. Easily doable under an hour in and out. Recommend to go as early as possible to avoid the crowds and foot traffic as the tunnels and path are narrow, avoid the mid day heat, and don’t wear flip flops.

Impressive, an incredible view, an adventure with a steep walk but very worth it; historical with nature!!!

The hike is steep but short. Well worth the 360° views from the top and a little piece of History with the bunker at the peak. Highly suggest getting there at 6AM when it opens, if you start at 6 you can get the sunrise on your hike which is as stunning as the views from the peak.
Make sure to make a reservation!!!!

Very fun hike. Plan on a paved trail most of the way. There are stairs that look, at first, to go on forever. Yes, the 360 view from the top is awesome. For extra credit, we hike down from Diamond Head and walked back to our hotel on Waikiki Beach. Worth it!

Diamond Head is a must-visit if you're in Oahu. The hike to the top is moderately challenging but very doable, even for beginners. The trail can get crowded, especially in the morning, so I recommend going early to avoid the heat and crowds. Once you reach the summit, the panoramic views of Honolulu and the ocean are absolutely worth it!
There are a few steep stairs and narrow tunnels, so be prepared with good shoes and water. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the lack of shade along the trail and the limited facilities at the base. But overall, it’s a memorable experience and a great way to see the island from above!

A must do when you are in Hawaii. Most likely you are gonna stay at a hotel on Waikiki. Just a short distance away is Diamond Head and you can actually hike up to the top for some killer views. I do it every time I’m in town. It’s an easy hike for the most part. There are some hard areas, but manageable for most people. I carried my daughter all the way up and a friend hiked up very pregnant. Not too bad. The views at the top are very worth it. If you want to do something other than lay on the beach then this is a cheap thing to do and should do.

Recommend going early, like 6am to escape the heat, but that is also when the peak times are. At 5:45 there was a queue to the parking lot.
You can walk in or take public transport to get there. If you miss getting reservation for the main car park then there are some parks just below which you might be fortunate to get like me. Then you walk through the Diamond head tunnel to gain access which is fun.
I also booked my reservation just outside the gate then walked in. Don't worry if you cant get one for your timeslot as they let you walk in anyway.
Expect about a 1:15-1:30 round trip and also it was heaving with people when I went.
Make sure you turn left at the loop and follow the path down through the bunker and down the spiral staircase for the proper loop of the facilities.
Views are spectacular and you might see a rainbow like I did.

Caught bus 23 that only runs every hour. 15 minutes. Walked thru tunnel to entry. I didn't buy online ticket as I didn't know when I would get there and the rules were if you came late they could turn you aware. 95% had scan code from online ticket. They won't sell you ticket there but you can go onto their wifi and buy and will let you in. $5 entry. It was a hassel there as slow wifi. Go on line and buy just leave enough time. It took a long time to get there because of bus, I must have just missed one. The walk was easy up. Some steps at top. Go at your own pace no hurry. Enjoy. Walked up did the alternative down for a couple hundred yards then it rejoins original trail. Great circular views of the island. Take lots of water especially on a hot day. Enjoy. Sorry my photos not showing so limited.

One of the must do's while in Waikiki. Book ahead with the national parks service as they limit spots both for walkers and vehicles. Moderate level of fitness required as track is all uphill and footing often uneven. Fabulous views and worth the effort. Go early in the morning (park opens at 6am) as the trail will get very hot! Take water and decent walking shoes.

We did this on our own. Definitely get parking and tickets before hand. The parking gets you closer to the beginning of the trail. We had a good time and the views were spectacular, but this hike is not for the feint of heart! If you are not used to hiking, take it slow. It's only about 3/4 of mile up, but it is super steep and the stairs to the last part are even steeper.

The trip consists of seeing the crater of this now no longer active volcano which takes its name from the fact that they found stones similar to diamonds. The bus drops people off on the slopes of this route which takes people to the top of the volcano's ridge. At the top you have a 360 degree view of Honolulu. The walk at a not particularly brisk pace lasts about an hour. There are several flights of stairs to climb, a first long and narrow tunnel and the path is a bit bumpy. At the end of the tunnel you have 2 options, either a gentler climb with other stairs or a long straight staircase, then a spiral one and you come out onto a bunker built during the war. From there a few more steps and you reach the panoramic terrace with a wonderful view. We did without renting audio guides, which in our opinion were superfluous. I really liked it and recommend it.

There are several look out points and lots of history. This is a great hike that people of all ages were able to do. Once in a lifetime experience!

Moderate hike with fantastic views along the way and at the top. The historic bunkers are very cool. The first 0.6 miles is pretty easy, low incline pathway, with uneven ground. The last 0.2 miles are the stair cases and tunnel, which we found tiring. Plenty of people stop for breaks along the way though. I don’t recommend a stroller, but plenty of young kids were climbing up with their parents.

I know I’m in the minority, but I think this hike was overrated. Admittedly, Waikiki isn’t my favorite part of the island, so walking to get a great view of a bunch of hotel buildings and condos along the coast wasn’t my thing. It was difficult for my young children as well, and it is very crowded. Go in the morning to avoid crowds and heat, and make sure you book online ahead of time or you might not be able to get in at the entrance. I will still give it 4 stars for cultural significance because it is so beloved, and it was great to say we did it. One and done for my family though.

The park literature says .8 miles each way. I'm a step counter, and actual distance to the top, based on steps, was 1.3 miles. A lovely hike, worth every step - but don't plan on .8 miles. We reserved the 4-4:30 spot and while it was warm out, the sun was low and the heat was not a problem. Glad we did it!

I am not sure that I would call this a "hike" because the entire path is paved and very crowded, even with the reservation system in place. Portions of the hike are very narrow so you have to go at the pace of the crowd in front of you which can be frustrating at times. You do have nice views of Waikiki from the top but the highlight for us was exploring the pill box (bunker), perhaps because it was a respite from the heat as there is very little shade on the entire trail. I would go early in the day to avoid it. I think there are way more rewarding hikes on the island but this one is just ok if you want to stay close to Waikiki.

Did the hike to the rim of Diamond head. I'm 68, in pretty fair shape, did well on the climb. Take a bottle of water, you'll need it. Had to take a break half way up the 99 steps but was so worth the views! Went at 9 in the morning, was pretty warm until we got up and out of the crater where there were more breezes. That was definitely better. Not sure I would want to do it if it were much warmer later in the day. Lots of places to takes rests on the way up if you need to. Don't hesitate to go, just take your time. We saw all ages from toddlers to folks older than I. Uneven terrain so watch where you step.

We started the hike at 3:30 p.m. There weren't many people around at that time.
It was still very warm, but the constant wind made it bearable. Trainers or hiking shoes are a must. We really liked the panoramic view. At the end we were able to admire a beautiful rainbow.

Great walk. Worth doing. Walk throught the tunnel that goes under the edge of the crater to access the interior and visitor centre. Admition is $5. We'll worth it. I recommend the self guided audio tour. It explains the military history of this site.

I made a reservation to hike Diamondhead on my first day in Hawaii. It was an easy hike so to say and the views of Waikiki Beach are breathtaking. Definitely bring water and protein bars and hike accordingly but it’s not a hard hike. You do need to make a reservation and it’s just minutes away from downtown Waikiki. Definitely a recommended site to visit if in Honolulu

Love doing the Diamond Head every time I come to Hawaii. We decided to do it at opening: the earliest time slot. There was a nice breeze and there wasn’t much sun. Best views of Waikiki!

We hiked Diamond Head on a weekday morning in January. It’s very popular all year so be sure to make a reservation. It took about 2 hours round trip and that was with taking pictures and following behind other hikers. The views are spectacular!

What an amazing walk to the top of Diamond head
The views are breathtaking and wonderful.
Definitely worth a visit , when you visit Oahu.

Beautiful view, highly recommended. My husband (70) and I (68) hiked it. Book early and try to go earlier in the day. There is not much shade. We saw people with small kids starting the trail, but none at the top of the crater.

Loved the hike up Diamond Head trail for the most beautiful views of the ocean and Bay of Waikiki and Honolulu! It’s the best way to get exercise with pretty steep elevation throughout the .8 mile hike up with lots of stairs at the top to burn off all the calories while vacationing! Great views!

We got to Diamond Head at 5:45am so we could hike when the day was cooler. The hike up is a little strenuous, but don't give up because it is worth it to see the view from the top.

We went on a cloudy day and it was still hot. I can tolerate heat well except shirt was sticking to my back. Trails are uneven and narrow in lots of places. Very few benches to sit and rest. I believe you can see the same view from roof top restaurant. Nice workout if you have nothing else to do.

Beautiful view. Depending on your fitness level and time of day of the hike, this is an easy to moderate hike. I followed the recommendations and took a later time slot and it was perfect.

Took the bus from Waikiki, so 20 mins and had to walk up from the base so that made it longer and more challenging (or rewarding depending on your perspective).
We went through a few bottles of water each. There’s a refill station in the park before you start the climb. It’s completely walkable with some gravel/potholes along the way.
At the top hang a left vs the stairway which looks brutal.
Did the hike at noon so that made it more difficult, try to get an early slot

Loved the hike here. Such wonderful views from the summit and along the way. Don’t forget to make your reservations, and make them for as early in the day as possible, as you will get hot and sweaty. there are various
Benches/places to stop and sit along with way. I was happy to see there is a small concession stand to buy beverages and snacks. Fun for all ages!

The view is amazing you can see the everything in Honolulu its also a very romantic place to take in the sun rise with person your in love with.

Visited here a few times. It is definitely worth your time of you want to get a view and your exercise on. Went the first time with just family and invited in-laws the second trip. Definitely worth the view.

Unforgettable experience, perfect for both seasoned hikers and beginners looking for a challenging yet rewarding adventure. This iconic crater stands as a symbol of Hawaii’s natural beauty, offering sweeping panoramic views of Honolulu, the Pacific Ocean, and the lush green landscapes surrounding the area.
The trail itself is well-maintained and moderately difficult. The ascent begins with a paved path that gradually becomes steeper and rockier, leading you through tunnels, steep stairways, and narrow pathways. Although the climb can be strenuous at times, the effort is absolutely worth it when you reach the top. At the summit, the breathtaking 360-degree view showcases the vibrant city below, turquoise waters, and rolling hills in the distance, making it an ideal spot for a photo op.
The hike is relatively short, but it can get hot, so bringing plenty of water and wearing sunscreen is essential. The early morning are the best time to avoid the crowds and the heat. We visited at 7am which was perfect.
Overall, Diamond Head is a must-do for anyone visiting Oahu, offering both a great physical challenge and some of the most stunning views on the island.
Note: Be sure to book your reservation in advance to guarantee your time and entry, as it tends to fill up quickly.

What a wonderful day completing the trek all the way to the peak of Diamond Head.
Definitely worth a visit when you come to Oahu .

This review has nothing to do with the hike itself. It's the requirements that the Hawaiian government put on tourists. First, you have to make the reservation in advance and pay online. You can't just go there and pay. Note that this rule only applies to tourists. Hawaiian residents can walk in. Then parking is so limited. You have to park far at the foothill before even getting to the tunnel. We've been to many hikes in the U.S. but never have to make a reservation in advance except for camping. There are other hiking trails in Honolulu that are free.

Highly recommend doing the hike to the top of diamond head. Take your time., take in the sites and enjoy the views.
Recommend going early in the morning when the park opens at 6 AM, otherwise it makes for a hot hike. don’t forget water and sunscreen.

Make reservations on website ahead of time and reserve parking spot if needed. Pretty easy hike, but if you need to take breaks there are places to stop along the way. Go early since it gets hot.

I loved hiking diamond head trail. The views up top were incredible! I recommend this as a great family activity. It took about 30min to reach the top

When you go to Diamond Head, reserve your time slot in advance or you won't get in.
We went by public transport from Waikiki to Diamond Head (3 dollars per person, pay the exact amount - bus 2, 23 or 24).
After the tunnel you arrive at the entrance, where there is a visitor center with a free toilet.
Then the climb begins. If you are in good condition, it is easy to do. A hat against the sun is nice. The path is uneven, so if you have weaker ankles, make sure you wear good walking shoes!
At the top you have an amazing view of the crater, but also Waikiki.
When you return, a delicious pineapple smoothie across the road is highly recommended!

We walked from our accommodation 5kms in Waikiki to the park entrance and then walked up the mountain. Fun walking through the tunnel to the walk start. Please book at least 2 weeks out your time slot. Very enjoyable walk. Path can be narrow and rocky in places but well worth the views from the top. Interest that you start in a volcanic plug and walk up the inside of an extinct volcano. You can take it slow and not rush, suggest you take a walking pole/stick. Took us 45mins with 2 rest/water stops - I am 66 and my partner 74. Lovely island and water views. Stunning views of Waikiki. We then walk back around the outside of the base - turned right onto Diamond Head Road, walking path all the way - another 4kms. Some stunning beaches - Kamasutra Beach Park, Le'ahi Beach Park, Makalei Beach Park- some historic homes and interesting architecture on the way plus we saw a mother seal and cub on Kaimana Beach. We started out 8am and retured at 1pm - nice half day and having a seim at the beach is nice if hot.

I had a great time hiking at Diamond Head State Monument in the afternoon. We began at the visitor center and followed the trail to the summit. It was a bit challenging for me, since this is our first time hiking mountain. The views from the top were amazing!

A must-visit place if you come to Hawaii
Oahu City, the sea, and nature come together, making you think that this is Hawaii.
Advance reservation is required
Good for light trekking, sneakers are sufficient.

Definitely worth the time to climb to the top of Diamond Head. Be sure to book in advance on the website.

This Diamond could be a walkers best friend , not a challenging climb to the top with three options to choose from either will reward you with outstanding views and sweet Atlantic air.

Took my electric board around diamond head it was a pretty fun ride 😁 but great spot to hike and take photos also 😉 wish there was a spot to post a ham.moc over night.

We were able to book online for the hike. Be prepared for stairs and is a constant climb to the summit. The views are spectacular and even at almost 90 degrees the breeze made it pleasant.

Quiet climb in the morning. I'm not fit, nor do I have any type of training and I climbed in 35 minutes. The greatest effort is made on the last stairs. Every step was worth watching the sunrise from the top of Diamond Head.
Alert for traffic at the entrance at 5.30 am.

I had no problem with the reservation system. We were able to get a 4p.m. to 6 p.m. hike time. I also booked the audio tour. When we got to Diamond Head we found out the last audio tour allowed was 1:30 p.m.?? I did ask why the online reservation system allowed me to make a reservation they had no intention of honoring. They had no answer. I wasn't overly impressed with Diamond Head. I have been on better hikes in other states. For the money they charge those from out of state I expected better signs along the way explaining the history etc of Diamond Head. I also found that the employees from the parking attendant to the visitor center kiosk employees to be less than happy to see visitors.

Gorgeous pull over spots. Informational plaques. Views of Waikiki and Honolulu. Chance to spot whales in Dec thru Feb. amazing!

Fun hike...not technical, but steep climbs. Pretty views, but very crowded. Plan for @90 minutes. Also, advanced reservations are required if you are not a resident of Hawaii and they cost $5 per person.

It was very congested on a Saturday morning but overall something that was a must see. We enjoyed doing this adventure through a guided path to the top.

Amazing views. Loved the bunker at the end. We love photographer and the entire hike was a photographers dream. So many fantastic pictures. The hike was pretty reasonable. Try to remember to bring water as it does get hot if you are bringing your equipment with you. We did not bring a tripod and wish we did.
Make sure you book this before you go. You can go online but we did see a lot of people hiking into the park on foot. This would have made it a considerably longer hike if we didn't get into the parking lot.

A hiking trail to do absolutely. No need to be a great sportsman, the climb is gradual and allows to take breaks if necessary. At the top of the crater, the view is 360°. Honolulu and its Waikiki beach are contemplated in all their grandeur.

The views amazing and the hike was a nice challenge. I was disappointed with the amount of people that were on the trail. It was crowded in certain spots, particularly at the top.

To be honest…we went to Diamond Head to see it up close and never thought for a second we would be hiking it! Lol
After we arrived there we decided since we were there we should go ahead make the hike to the top! It took us a couple of hours…we stopped along the way to take breaks! We finally made it and the views from the top made it absolutely worth the hike! We are happy to say we did it and we got the t-shirts to say we did!! lol
Once in a lifetime experience for sure!

Great hike to the summit of the crater to be rewarded with wonderful views of Oahu. I went with my brother, sister in law and 11 yo niece during the 10-11 time slot and we were dressed to hike, carrying water and used plenty of sun protection which is the way to do it. The steps are all towards the summit be prepared for those and there is a reasonably sized tunnel following a steep flight of stairs what would not be suitable for anyone who suffers from claustrophobia. There were people walking through trail in flip flops I wouldn’t recommend this for footwear. The hike is classed as moderate but I would suggest that if you don’t have a decent level of cardiovascular fitness you’re going to struggle. Well worth the $5 entry fee and a must do for visitors to the island.

Overall a beautiful hike with helpful information posted throughout and unique vies of the crater. It only took 1 hour but if you stop and take more pictures or do it a bit slower it's probably 1.5 hours.
First, you need a reservation. When I looked the morning of, I was only able to get 2-4:00 PM because everything else had been booked. That being said, because most people don't like that time (I assume heat!) I think it was less crowded than other reviews seem to imply.
I think this is a hike for most abilities because it is mostly paved and the most difficult part is stairs. At the top you can actually go up a steep flight of stairs to ender the fire station and then climb out to the top which was very cool (but easy to skip for those who are a little less comfortable on stairs). The view at the top of Waikiki is really beautiful and a nice reward!

Beautiful view. Enjoy the morning hike with my teenage kids. Definitely a must do activity if you are in the area. Breathtaking

Simply shameful!
Deny access to this site because we didn't have a QR code and didn't want to go through this Reservation System.
Drive thousands of miles for nothing.

Great hike that everyone can do (there are spaces to stop if needed) with absolutely stunning views from the top! Super cool going through the bunkers too.

The views from the top of the crater are amazing, looking both to the East coast and of Waikiki. The hike up is a little steep, including 100 steps at the end, but even if you are old or young, just take it slowly. Be aware, however, that reservations are now needed to enter the park and there is a charge both for parking and for each person.

This hike was beautiful, but definitely not for beginners or kid friendly. I wouldn’t recommend young kids, saw them having a harder time.
My husband who has a mild disability had a hard time and my 9yr old both couldn’t make it up.

This was a tough hike, but worth it! We are in our 70's and in good shape. We walk 2 miles almost every day, but not uphill. These paths were sometimes paved and sometimes very uneven. Wear good closed toed hiking shoes, carry water and be prepared for warm weather. There are steep stairs at the very end and I wasn't sure I was up to them, but I didn't want to miss the summit views. I counted the steps 27 to a platform, another 27 to platform and 32 to the top. It was definitely worth it. The views were breathtaking 360 degrees. Incredible. I thought coming down would be easier. It was still pretty rugged coming down but my heart was full from making it to the top. I bought the t-shirt to prove I made it!

The views are amazing but I am going to say that it was a struggle for a fluffy girl. For reference, I am under 40. Also, the reviews that say anyone can do it is a stretch because there are a ton of stairs and one person with us had to stop halfway and wait for us to come back down. At the top I definitely felt that the hike was worth it but when I thought I was dying going up the stairs I wasn’t so sure. I would do it again, just not today. I would have given 5 stars but my lungs wouldn’t let me due to the recent abuse.

A tough climb but worth it for the views. Get the No 2 bus from Waikiki but be aware it drops you way short of the entrance to the Park (a further 15 minute walk.) And then once in the park, a steep uphill climb to the summit. Allow a two hour turnaround for the whole visit once inside the park. And you need a reservation. Get it online at Diamond Head State Park.

Great hiking experience. Great view when you reach the top. 360 degrees infinity view of ocean and city. The diamond head is must go place. You will enjoy.

This is a relative low distance hike 1.6 miles....it is not easy however. It is basically straight up hill and straight back down....can be done in an hour...your pass will allow for 2.
Wear good walking shoes minimum, we saw people in loafers, boots, one guy with a cane (god bless him) and many others in what seemed to be not very good overall health....all were making it, so all can....just be prepared for a leg workout.

This is probably a must do for the sweeping view you get at the top of the hike of Honolulu, and the surrounding volcanic mountains (often decorated with a beautiful rainbow). Reservations are needed and we booked the 2-4pm slot online a few weeks ahead of our visit. We did the trip from our hotel to the park using Uber ; note that Uber, as well as buses, stop a bit far from the park entrance so you’ll have to walk 10-15 min to get to the check in gate where they scan your QR code. Once inside, you can buy bottled water, or aluminium bottles that you can fill at the water fountains. After the hike starts it’s just a long, winding path up to the top with some stairs at the end. While the site marks it as a moderately difficult climb, it depends on your physical condition so if you feel tired, make some breaks in between as the last leg is mostly stairs. The experience on the way and once at the top makes it worth it with lots of good memories and pictures to bring back home.

The hike to the top of Diamond Head offering spectacular views of Waikiki Beach and Honolulu was one of the highlights of our trip to Oahu. Try to make the hike on a day when the sun is out and there is blue sky as the setting is amazing. It does require at least some moderate fitness to make the climb. Most importantly make a reservation in advance for entry as well as parking. Parking is $10 and entry is $5/person. Entry slots are at 2 hour intervals beginning at 6am. You need to arrive within the first 30 min of your 2 hour entry slot as it is expected that you will leave by the end of the time slot. I booked 8-10am which was perfect. This keeps you ahead of the crowds and heat of the day. I also rented the audio tour which I thought was worthwhile

Gorgeous views, a moderately difficult hike. It gets very windy at the top of the hike but worth it. Bring water and sunscreen. Nice gift shop at bottom near the parking lot.

Make sure you pre book your visiting time. All non-residents need to book a time slot to visit the park. It is recommended that you do this several days in advance to ensure you will get in. It is quite the hike, mostly up-hill with many stairs as well. If not in good shape, I would not attempt. Go early and you can catch the stunning sunrise.

Iconic O’ahu landmark. About a 40 minute walk to the visitors’ centre from Waikiki, then a 30 minute walk up to the summit. 3/4 of the climb is a relatively easy gradient but the last 1/4 is steep.
You need to reserve a time slot in advance. Easy walk from Waikiki, despite Google Maps saying it can’t find a way there!

The views are beautiful but I do not think it was worth it.
We went at 9am on a Thrusday and it was so crowded! I've never been on a hike that there were so many people. It honestly was like walking down a city sidewalk. I only wish the path had been as wide as a sidewalk.
There are multiple sets of steep, narrow, steps. You ascend and descend on the same path/stairs. It's not a leisurely little hike. Unfortunately, I spent the following 2 days in agony as my calves were so knotted up.

Go early if you can but anytime before 10am will be crowded, especially on a weekend. Take good shoes with traction if it's raining. Once you are out of the tunnel, go right for a workout up the massive stairs, or go left and take in more views. Don't forget to touch the summit marker otherwise the hike didn't count!

Diamond Head State Monument is a must to see while you are staying in Honolulu.
We went there by bus and then took the trail. It was a really nice walk with a magic scenery! What more can I say?
Just Great!

This was my second time doing the Diamond Head Trail. For some reason, it seemed more difficult than the first time. I wouldn't call this a full day excursion. Maybe a half day. This time, I made reservations early in the day for two reasons. One, it would be cooler and two, so we could check out the KCC Farmer's Market. The Market seems to draw quite a crowd and it's easy to see why. They have all kinds of fresh bread and vegetables along with things like stands such as Aloha Elote, which serves Mexican Street Corn. There are also Keith's Cookies, Mexican Food Gourmet Burgers, Ono Kettle Pop (Different flavours of popcorn), Kukui Sausage, Honolulu Burger Company, Papi's Empanadas, you get the idea. A good place to grab a quick bite (And maybe a drink) before you do the Diamond Head Trail.

Amazing experience. A must-do item if you are in Honolulu or Waikiki. We took an Uber to the Visitor parking inside the park, but you can also take a bus to the entrance of the park and walk up 10 mins to the start of the hike. Would recommend that you wear sneakers or boots because some parts are a bit slippery. Also bring a bottle of water, wear sunscreen, and bring sunglasses. Views are phenomenal all the way up. When you get to the fork, follow the recommended path and go left. Do NOT go up the right side (very long staircase) since that will take you to the bunker and you will bypass a number of amazing views. You can always loop back that way down, but we went down the same way we went up. Entire hike up and down took about an 1-1.5 hours.

We had a great time during our vacation, I really liked the service in the restaurant, I would especially like to thank the guy named Hasan, great service, smiling, friendly and very sociable, everything is super!!!! everything is great!

Hiking Diamond Head was one of things I really wanted to do on our first trip to Oahu. It didn’t disappoint-incredible views and a wonderful memory! Make your reservation for tickets & parking one month before. And bring water-we were in the 8-10am time slot and it was pretty warm. We’re not in the best shape & in our mid-50’s but it was a doable hike. Pretty steep and uneven terrain at times but worth it! It took us 1 hour & ten minutes round trip & we took some rest & photo breaks-about 45 minutes on the way up.

Easy access, beautiful views. Very organized and tidy trails. It was very congested at the top with tourists taking photos so it needs a better system to promote smooth flow. I visited from Canada and needed to book and pay on-line in advance. C'mon, it's a state park, why can't I pay at the gate??
Best view on Wikiki 👌🏻
Perfect view over Waikiki. The hike up can be completed in 30-60 minutes depending on your fitness level. You should reserve a parking space because there are not many parking spaces available at the top. Currently costs $10.
Entry is $5, but you have to do it online because you have to enter your details there. Payment only by credit card. No cash payments on site!!!
