You'll have quite a few options when it comes to produce. Our strategy is to do a complete outside walk first to check out the different vendors then go back to ones we showed interest in. Almost everyone accepts card.

I've gone multiple times, with friends and with little kids. Bring about $5-10 for parking, and make sure you have cash for the local vendors. You can get breakfast pastries for $2, local coffee for $1.50, it's wonderful. You'll see a lot of people who bring reusable grocery bags and stock up, and then you'll also see families with wagons just enjoying the trip. I would highly suggest you go, but go early. It gets super hot and super packed after 9 or 10 a.m.

An experience that everyone will enjoy. Food, music, entertainment, crafts and produce of every size and color.

The market is full of great vendors! There are a variety of things being sold from fresh veggies and fruit to fresh flowers to local artists selling their works of art. I enjoy the breakfast burritos, breakfast pizza and egg rolls from various vendors just as much as the selection of fresh foods. The market is dog friendly which I enjoy because I love seeing all the different breeds.

Always fun to visit. Whether to purchase items, people watch, meet friends, or pet dogs. Numerous stands, very good selection, and always busy.

By jpro56 |

Beautiful downtown area kept vibrant with a Saturday morning market that has something for everyone. Fresh produce, food venders, artisans, live music and crafts. Restaurants and bars were even open and doing a brisk business as well. Great to see a cities downtown area doing so well.

Best farmers market I have ever visited! Great food! Great produce! Fun and unique booths!! Fresh flowers!! Just fantastic!!!

Whether you are looking for fresh locally grown produce or just want to people watch, Des Moines' farmers market is rich in experience. From quality herbs, vegetables, stone fruit, locally butchered meats, and unique cheeses to homemade crafts and delightful pastries, attendees will not be lacking for experience or good tastes.
Although dogs are everywhere, if you have a pooch you might consider leaving him home because of the crowded venue and summer heat.

Our Saturdays between May and October don't seem right unless we make our weekly trip to the Farmers Market. We start our experience with a sausage breakfast sandwich at Guys and Gals. The sausage is made special for this sandwich and I also need to mention the 50 cent coffee and fresh muffins. After a leisurely hour people watching from the chairs provided by this vendor we wander down the streets with a stop at Mast Family bakery for a fresh pie or angel food cake. As we wander there is entertainment by street performers and of course occasionally bumping into a friend to visit with. Mao's Egg Rolls are another stop as well as Rhinehart Gardens for fresh produce. Many other vendors attract our attention to pick up garden radishes, onions, cucumbers, and of course sweet corn. When you are in the market for other things you can find jewelry, soaps, clothing, plants, and beautiful fresh flowers. The market also offers more vendors selling a diverse variety of foods and spices. You might need something a little time off your feet so how about sipping on a Bloody Mary at Court Avenue Brewing or Mickey's Irish Pub where you can sit outside and continue to enjoy Iowa's Saturday morning weather. The only downside to this great morning out is the thoughtless dog owners who drag their poor animals along on a leash. This isn't the disgusting part though~ not picking up the "debris" left behind on the sidewalk or keep them from relieving themselves on boxes of produce sitting by the vendors booths is!

This was a great farmer's market with a huge variety of food. There were stands ranging from classic breakfast, smoked meat, baked goods and ethnic foods. I had the breakfast burrito and it was amazing. It's a foodie's paradise.

Go early and spend several hours here. Foods and entertainment from all over. Lots of culture and friendly people

For as long as I can remember, I have loved this Farmers Market. It is huge, covering multiple blocks along downtown's Court Avenue and perpendicular cross streets, and has long been a Saturday morning staple for people in Des Moines. Not only are there endless vendors from whom you can purchase fresh produce, flowers, meat, cheese, clothes and more, but there are also lots of places to get breakfast and coffee. You can choose from vendors set up at the market, or often you can duck in to many of the brick and mortar restaurants along Court Avenue and side streets.

My personal favorite place to stop is a vendor called Saloo's—Saloo and her daughter are there every Saturday making homemade samosas and potato cutlets. I have long been a diehard fan of the vegetable potato cutlet, and would highly recommend stopping by! The other fan favorite is the Farmboys stand, which makes breakfast burritos and burrito bowls to order. The line can get long there but moves swiftly.

In terms of produce, I have been a big fan of Blue Gate Farm, which has everything from salad mix to farm fresh eggs to yarn made from alpaca. Even if you're not looking for produce, it's just such a fun experience to go down and see the Farmers Market. Get there early if you don't want to be totally inundated by the crowds!

Been coming for years now and it never disappoints. Variety and selection of vendors is fantastic, something for everyone. I always bring home something unique.

By TomHurley |

We went for the firet time a few weeks ago. There were many friendly vendors, but I was hoping for a wider selection of vegetables (no fruits at the time). There seemed to be more crafts and prepared food than farms represented. Still a good time and fun for the family.

By GoHawksAnkenyIowa |

A little bit for everyone. Whether it is breakfast, vegetables, pies, meat, lawn art there is a little bit for everyone. Then you can go east to the Principal Riverwalk for a stroll to walk off what you have eaten.

By g_seattle |

Happened to be in Des Moines on a Saturday morning and went to the farmers market. Read some articles/reviews about being one of the biggest and best. This is one of those times the articles/reviews are spot on. Lots of great fruits and vegetable stands with some outstanding product. So many food vendors it made choosing just one quite the challenge.

By Fran S |

Great place to go on Saturday morning. Lots of vendors. Lots of food.. Go early as it gets very crowded. Park on ramp. It's free.

By sharingmyexperi3nces |

I have visited the farmers market on several occasions. The selection is great! Many many items to chose from. Various vendors. Various quantities and it’s all fresh. There are typically neat crafts and various amusements. The people are always friendly. Prices are reasonable. This is a ritual for many folks in the Des Moines metro.

By Redrocker85 |

Several times a year my son and I visit the Saturday Morning downtown farmers market. We go early to catch breakfast and stay for the food culture and music. We almost find something unusual to buy. I would recommend to locals and travelers alike.

By OziDiver |

If you are in Des Moines on a Saturday while the Farmers Market is open, make sure that you get up early and head down there. This is a great place to walk through with loads of interesting stuff to buy.

By Katelynne G |

There is tons of food items to eat while you shop for locally grown produce and local shops. It quite crowded with lots of people and family dogs, but it is enjoyable for a visit once or twice during the summer. Things are a bit pricey, but that is to be expected as it has been locally made.

By cornhusker34 |

No doubt a lot to do and see. Lots of unique products and music going on. Also, bars, restaurants, and stores open up early to take part which makes it even better.

By AshBernadette88 |

This is probably the largest farmers' market I've been to. As with other markets, plenty of fresh foods are available, as well as various food trucks and artisan booths. Unlike other markets, dogs are welcomed at this one, as long as they're leashed.

You should also eat an infamous breakfast burrito when you're there! I don't remember the name (anyone in the area could tell you where the booth is located), but the burritos are made-to-order and are delicious! It's also fun just to walk around downtown and enjoy the atmosphere.

By dancer1989 |

We came for the weekend specifically to go to the farmers market because we had heard such great thing about it! It happened to be pouring rain but we went anyway and I am so glad that we did! I could tell that there are normally more vendors but I was very happy with the vendors that are there. I would definitely recommend buying fresh goat cheese and also the mustard! Such a fun weekend!

By Sylvan S |

Des Moines has one of the best farmers markets! All sorts of vendors and lots of booths! Much larger than we expected!

By Sara R |

Excellent Farmer's market. There are tons of options for anything you could want. Des Moines does a great job bringing in new vendors, and keeping old favorites. You must try the breakfast burrito from the Farm Boys tent (they have a green tent.) I would recommend either going early in the morning to avoid the crowd.

By Carrie N |

The Des Moines Farmers Market has streets of vendors. There is definitely something for everyone! There are crafts, flowers, and food from around the state! Vendors change every week so there is always something new.

By x000n46n |

This place is always crowded and understandably so. If you're looking for fresh items to fix or look to find something unusual handmade item for the home then this is the place to be. the selection and taste of the food is always outstanding and the people are always so kind and helpful. I slacked off last summer and only went once but i guarantee it will be more often next year

By Camille L |

The downtown farmers market is enjoyable on all sensory levels-music for your ears, mini doughnuts for your taste, flowers for your smell, lots of food textures for your touch and people watching for your sight. Great way to spend the morning is Des Moines. Easy to park in free downtown ramps.

By Brad B |

Fabulous farmer's market. July visit saw homegrown veggies of all sorts including the first sweetcorn of the season. Prices are really good, too.

Parking is rough given the popularity of the market and all downtown construction. The garages are free but I recommend paying the $4-$5 to the small parking lots as you will be making several trips back to your car to stash your purchases (avoid steps.)

By Robert B |

If you are looking for one of the top ten farmer markets in the USA, go to the downtown farmers market in Des Moines! Just be sure that you like crowds, because there will be a lot of dogs and baby strollers. Great to bike to as there are plenty of bike rakes available. Recommend standing in line for the breakfast burrito.

By JRSullivan77 |

I lack experience to compare the Des Moines Farmer's Market to FMs in other cities, but we love going to this one! The sole negative is the 12 Noon closing time, so an early start is advised. You can find your breakfast, and your lunch, at the FM. Great people watching, and live music on multiple corners. Use sunscreen and bring a water bottle. Best parking usually in a city garage; walk down to Court Avenue.

By eloisie_3cat |

A variety of produce sellers, mostly local. Some craft sellers. Lots of dogs on leash for the dog-deprived at home.

By jlclone |

There should not be dogs allowed at the farmers market. Too many people, too many kids, not a good mix and too hot for them. The temp was upper 90’s. How hot must that pavement of been on the pads of their paws?
I know you are proud dog owners, but leave the pooch at home where everyone, including the dog, is safe.

By David S |

Great selection of produce (lots of organic), crafts, and artisan foods at competitive prices. Unlike a lot of farmers markets, the walking space was sufficient to handle a pretty large crowd. A very dog friendly place!! Adequate surface lot and garage parking within a short walk of the FM.

By Dawnya C |

I look forward to a fresh, delicious breakfast every Saturday of the Market. The people watching is terrific and I can bring home fresh, seasonal veg for the week too!

By iowaer |

Many people expect Farmer’s Markets to be small and mundane. I don’t think thousands of people would waste time every week if that were the case. Many musicians, food stands, bakeries, wineries and craftsman’s are side by side with all the beautiful vegetable stands. If nothing else, it is a great place to people watch! I recommend going early- before 8. By 9 it can be crowded!

By Luv2trvl41 |

I’m from Minneapolis but this Farmer’s Market was better than any I’ve been to. There was quality entertainment on every block, so many amazing vendors including restaurants, goods, produce, and prepared food. I was honestly so impressed, I’m not sure I’ve tasted fresher goat cheese or more amazing chocolate. Had a blast.

By 881lizp |

There are so many vendors you wont see them all. DART has a bus that picks you up and transports you down to the Farmers Market. You will need to contact Dart to fine the location. ALSO they will pick you up when you have completed your day of fun... Music, all kinds of vendors, lots and lots of people walking around, VERY enjoyable day. Open every Saturday morning.....

By chanda_swetha421 |

I visited farmers market for the first time.. and that too in winter.. there were many stalls most of them were jellys / jams , hot sauces , cream cheese n also a few stalls like wine, locally grown vegetables like tomatoes, potatoes etc... there was one cookie stall they had very different gourmet cookies n I absolutely loved them. Jasmine cookies were awesome ... since it was holiday season the decorations Christmas trees live music n all made my day specially the snow

By Tom V |

The Farmers market had all kinds of musicians playing different instruments as you walked through the market. There was a lot of foods and drinks to taste. The produce from different farms, dairies, and wineries were incredible, and I wound up buying some beautiful Sunflowers for my wife at a very reasonable price.

By 573dk9999 |

A very large market, spanning four blocks with side streets used also. Best entry point is the corner of 4th and Walnut, this puts you at the head of what is used to be the best street for breakfast, although some very good locations are now elsewhere. If you stay at the Renaissance, it is an easy walk. There is a public parking ramp across from the Renaissance which is a good place to park.

My favorite breakfast is a Weisswurst at the Strudl Haus stand, although we have eaten many places, if there is a Bosnian vendor the cevapi is my first choice. One of the side streets has been having a stand selling Salvadorian pupusas, which look very tempting, but we have always eaten by the time we get there and the line is usually 30-40 deep.

There are a number of farm vendors selling artisanal cheeses, honey, garden vegetables, meat and just about anything that can be grown. Other vendors specialize in plants, artwork, tee shirts or a wide variety of crafts. Thankfully the vendors are regulated, or I'm sure you would find tables of junk just like you find in Europe. Maybe that would be fun, but not yet.

Even though we're from out of town, we make a trip over at least once per summer and make a weekend of it.

By Gemgirl6666 |

It was easy to get to from my hotel(Travelodge) It was my first time to a farmers market. I absolutely loved it! Many things to see.

By punkyj1982 |

Most comprehensive and culturally diversified farmers market anywhere! Amazing variety of home grown produce and flowers, food, entertainment, soft goods, jewelry - anything you could want at a farmers market!

By Connie V |

The farmers market is the best one I have been to in Iowa. There are several different wine tasting places and food from different countries there. It's a dog friendly place and fun to see all different types. Lots of places to buy grass feed meat. They have some entertainment going on all the time. It's by the river, so the view is great. The earlier you get there the less crowded it is. Will definitely go back again.

By joann_alumbaugh |

I recommend you go early to beat the crowds because it'll be packed by mid-morning. Lots to see and great food and market items to buy. You'll enjoy it!

By rowensmd2 |

This is really one stop marketing. You can have a sidewalk breakfas experience that has great breakfast burritos. You find wonderful produce, fun collectibles for sale and the best homemade fudge I have ever tasted. A must visit.

By Vjazzywine |

So many varieties of fruits, veggies, meats crafts and food items! A great way to spend a Saturday Morning!!

By April K |

Why did I wait so long to go? This has quickly become a personal favorite! Gorgeous fresh flowers, yummy food, a plethora of hand crafted art. Pottery, soaps, teas, spices...I could go on and on!

By Odus Elex R |

Each time I and my wife have gone we find a number sellers that just buy from wholesale houses and resell at the farmer's market. Even though there are some actual grower to market sellers. A lot of the time you can by a product cheaper at the when they have a sell.

By as3dgfad6 |

We were in Des Moines attending the BMW motorcycle rally at the State Fairgrounds. We also had a wedding on Saturday night so our hotel was downtown. Since it was only a block away we decided to take a short walk through the farmers market on Saturday morning. That turned into a 2 hour plus experience as it was much larger than we expected, stretching almost 6 blocks with each side street extending 1/2 to one block. There were food stands, crafts, produce, and music. Most of the permanent restaurants, bars, and shops either had stands or were open. The weather was great and it was very busy but we were able to keep moving and see what we wanted to see. The only downside was that we were on the motorcycles which limited what we could buy. We will plan another trip when we can spend a little more time and pick up some produce.

By Kathy M |

I shop the veggie stands mostly, but usually find a variety of stands to choose fruits and other tasty things to nosh on while shopping. Lots of people. I love my dog but wish people would leave theirs home , unless a service dog, as streets are very crowded without maneuvering leashes.

By Mike M. |

Get there early for the best selection of the best produce. Breakfast Burritos are definitely worth waiting in line for. 2nd largest Farmers market in the nation!

By AngieP1988 |

Lots of produce, flowers, jewelry, and baked goods. Bring a cloth shopping bag to carry all of it. You can spend hours here. Arrive early for the best stuff and largest selection. Crowded by 10.

By Teri H |

It's wonderful can't say enough good about it. Great food , great music , all fair markets good prices .

By Mlg2 |

If you like farmers markets this is the place to be on a Saturday morning in Des Moines. From jewlery to veggies, from burittos to fruit you can find it here. Such a great way to spend a morning downtown. We love the breakfast burritos. Don't pass up a mug of fresh made rootbeer at the Court ave brewery. So good. And a must have is the kettle corn......

By Connie M |

We arrived around 9:30 a.m. and there were tons of people there (and dogs, too)!! This was our first visit to the D.M. farmers market, and we were felt it was laid out pretty well. We found great produce to purchase, we enjoyed some amazing coffee and found a few new things for our home. All of the vendors that we dealt with were very friendly. We didn't eat while we were there, but some of the food establishments looked and smelled amazing! We will definitely return!

By sconi712 |

Great place to purchase healthy fruits, vegetables and other tasty & delightful treats. Vendors are friendly and helpful.

By Rhonda S |

Its a summer meet with my son and his dog Jax early Saturday mornings when he gets off work at 7am. Not alot of people at that time in the morning so its perfect otherwise it gets pretty elbow to elbow at times. Variety of vendors and nice choices. I do feel that the prices are a little high but if people are paying it they won't bring them down. All in all its a good experience.

By N M |

I've lived in DSM for nearly 10 years now and have been going the the Farmers Market for much of that. It's been fun to watch it go from a busy market to what it is today. (At one time, traffic used to pass through the middle of it)

There's loads of fresh veggies, fruits, and herbs along with fresh baked goods. Arts, crafts, wine, cheese as well. Such a wide selection, and they are all very high quality wares.

The bad thing about it is that it's not a strictly produce market. Probably half the booths are not. Don't get me wrong, the prepared food (egg rolls, burritos, pizzas, sandwiches, etc) are really good. But it really feels like a street festival crossed with a market. Leading to busy crowds, congestion, strollers, dogs.

But that is all a sign of its success. It gets bigger and better every year, and I'm proud to have it a part of our beautiful city.

By Timothy D |

Don't be fooled by all the corn and soybeans of big Ag! Iowa has a growing number of local farmers, often organic. And the food trucks are great, too.

By LaurelF |

Beyond Veggies, there's a great selection of locally made mustards, jams, baked goods ... yum! The street can get a bit congested so plan to be patient.

By Tony H |

Amazing how huge this was. Next time we're skipping breakfast and heading there. Fresh breads and veggies as far as the eyes could see. One of the best I've ever seen.

By Susie |

It gets pretty crowded here. There are also live performances more country as far as genre goes. Great produce available! If you find something you like, I suggest scouting other vendors again. I got sunflowers and regretted them because I saw some at another vendor as I was leaving. They looked so much better for the price! Also great for people watching and so many different breeds of dogs that ppl bring!

By Gerrit82 |

Wife and I go early, getting their before 7:00 when they open. Parking is easy if you go early. Have breakfast, pick up some fresh veggies, and get a Blood Marry and watch the crowd. On the way home before 8:45 or so when it starts to get really busy. It a fun time!

By samanthazrust |

The absolute best market. There’s something for everyone and buying local makes you feel good about your community. Get some coffee and egg rolls and get all your fruits and veggies for the week!

By Indy317T |

My visit was entirely too short-- Lots of fresh produce, creative arts and street music. Definitely work a visit to this Farmers Market!

By kristinsW324GB |

Great place to people watch, get some fresh veggies and fruits and flowers and great place to try new things! The food is great, drinks are great and very family friendly environment. Love the farmers market!

By 1PalapasOnTheBeach |

One of our very favorite farmers market!! I ❤️ Iowa, the FM is a great time to eat, shop & to be happier. This visit it had alot more people. Can not walk without elbow to elbow crowds.

We always buy two yummy pies, from the vendor that has a very large stand. They keep the pies on wooden shelves.

The grilled cheese stand must be yummy, long lines all day.

Many of the vendors do not take CC's. Cash,or all those other apps that I do not have, such as Venmo. Vendors will lose my business, as why should I have to get this app to buy your products. I've heard all about these apps, but no thanks! I'll stick with my CC, I don't carry cash that often.

So now you know your options. Nonetheless it's a great time. One bridge is being rebuilt over the river, close by the FM.

By Tricia R |

We went with our family downtown and were so surprised at all the things that they sell. The fresh vegetables, flowers, clothes, jewelry and the Food!!! We sampled wine and spices. Can't wait to go again.

By Michael D |

Very nice and clean many different kinds of food! Great way to have family time! Easy parking! Fun and a learning experience!

By RLCZ70 |

Large market, wide variety of options - fresh produce, baked goods, shirts, art, jewelry, lots of options for food breakfast/lunch, easier to get around when it first opens at 7 than later before it closes at noon

By torpdo |

Lots of people look forward to the annual Des Moines Downtown Farmers Market. It opens the first Saturday in May (don't go that day --- too many people) and closes the last Saturday in October. It features local farmers, arts and crafts, music and food galore. A great place to people watch. The local parking garages are open and it's free to park (took me several years to learn that fact). It is held on Court Ave from Water St to 5th Ave plus some side streets. Prices are reasonable and vendors are friendly.

By Wanderer38N90W |

We walked to the market from our hotel. Great breakfast options and lots of produce and live entertainment. Several blocks are shut down and the streets are flooded with people. The kids were disappointed it was only there on Saturday. Des Moines has a winner.

By BatGuano30 |

Des Moines is such a great city, so glad my wife can visit yearly. This massive market is one of the joys. So many booths, musician, and dogs. What fun.

By CaribeAzul |

We have visited the Downtown Farmers Market several times. It is a great way to walk around, people watch, have a cup of coffee, some Dutch treats (letters, banquette), shop for vegetables (organic or otherwise), honey, and all kinds of different art/crafts. It is a very fun way to spend Saturday morning, and enjoy downtown. Visit some of the restaurants that serve brunch. You won't regret it.

By Connie J |

Farmers market downtown Des Moines is very nicely arranged and lots of variety to choose from. Fresh vegetables are plentiful. Some awesome clothing outfits. And wonderful food and art.

By floramum |

Great for people watching, eating and picking up your vittles for the coming week. Get there early (7am) for prime pickings and fewer people to navigate around. Plan on finding something yummy for breakfast.

By ead2016103 |

You can also find a booth of someone talking about why you should not believe in God! Surprising? Yes especially in Des Moines Iowa but this is how open the opportunity is. It's one of the best I've ever been to and it goes for 5 hrs every Sat between May and Sep, I think that's when it ends.
It's in the heart of court ave, so you could be sipping you mimosa on the patio of a restaurant. Wherever restaurant you go to, skip Jonny's hall of fame. They tell you that your mimosa has freshly squeezed juice but you're teeth will look brighter than a yellow post it note because of all the concentrate juice! Not call Johnny's. 😒

By Kevin T |

Many vendors to choose from for veggies, flowers and baked goods. We love the breads! The food vendors are hard to pass by with some delicious breakfast offerings like breakfast burritos! Pick a nice morning and you won't be disappointed!

By mistyo73 |

Love the farmers market. Always fresh fruits and vegetables. Nice vendors. Love all the variety of foods to eat and all the musicians. It's just a nice morning activity.

By roger325 |

This is one of the great venues for locally produced products: fresh foods, meats, flowers, crafts, clothing, etc, etc. One of the most pleasant weekend activities is downtown on a Saturday morning. It's a happening place.

By Firekick |

The first time I came, I didn't know what to expect and was blown away by the size, variety and offerings of this "Farmers Market" This is more like a craft show, farmers market and food truck festival all rolled up in one! Its amazing to walk amoungst good ol, kind hearted Iowans, and hear the sounds of music flowing around you as the intoxicating smells of foods from every corner of the world waft enticingly past your nostrils, putting your taste buds and saliva glands into overdrive! The food matches the smells too! amazing. Great people watching and dog petting if you so desire as a lot of people bring a wide variety of dogs on the walk with them. You will be amazed at the size of this! Block after block of it. If you haven't gone, go! If you have visitors, take them, if your loved one needs a uplifting morning, take them to this, you wont be sorry!

By John Earley |

Came by to look at the local produce. Great time watching people and their dogs. Great place to get some steps in.

By Scuba132 |

I went to see how I could walk. Recovering from surgery and to other hospital stays. I watched people with small people and larger people, the same with dogs

By chaser193 |

If you’re looking for a variety of vendors from foods, vegetables, fruits, wines, spices, baked goods, or unique gifts then this is definitely a great place to visit. I had a wonderful experience and would definitely return.

By Mark R |

The downtown farmers market in Des Moines is fantastic. Lots of food, lots of produce and lots of character. We go as often as we can. The market is open 7 AM to Noon from May through October. They also have a winter market that is held inside Capitol Square.

By neverenufftravels |

We like to hit the Farmers Market when ever we can when we are in Des Moines for the weekend. Get there early because it gets crowded! Lots of everything!

By PAT S |

The Farmers Market is a huge happening place. Lively people jostling with dogs and baby strollers stopping to chat or pet a dog, a very social environment. Lots of food to eat on the go and lots to take home. Music on every corner. A must stop on a Saturday morning.

By James C |

The DSM Farmers' Market offers a wide variety of items ... from produce to baked goods to handiwork. The quality is usually always quite good, but don't look for bargain basement prices. Many, if not most items, can be purchased elsewhere for less. There is always a lot to see, but if you don't like crowds, you won't like the FM. Thousands show up most every Saturday.

By patriciagT7771LQ |

Hard to beat- live music on every block, beautiful and bountiful produce and fresh homemade foods to eat now or later! Our favorite is to get a Farm Boy breakfast burrito then work it off by walking and shopping!

By minnesotans4 |

We were staying at the downtown Marriott and heard about the great Farmer's Market. We went around 10:30 and it was packed with people, strollers, and dogs. It was interesting to try different foods and a lot of booths had samples. We felt the food prices were quite reasonable. It was one of the best and largest Farmer's Market I have been attended. Recommend!

By Calvin A |

I love the Farmers market. I can get my morning coffee and breakfast while I roam around getting my produce. There's a judge crowd so come early. Pet friendly. Bring poop bags

By Rodger W |

Have fun walking around and seeing all the different stands. Take home some fresh local grown produce. Get some great ideas from the vendors. Great if you like people watching. Lot's of dogs too.

By Aolisi |

On my own in Des Moines on a Saturday, so I decided to check out the market. Pleasant vibe, crowded but everyone just ambling along, no problem if you’re also ambling. I spent an hour and a half checking out the vendors. The market is large and varied, and prices are reasonable. I’m traveling light, so I only bought a pair of earrings for a gift. Tucked nicely in my pocket and will serve as a reminder of Iowa.

By OklahomaMomOf3 |

Wow! Besides the location being picturesque, the variety of stalls and goods was much bigger and better than I expected! The produce looked great. There were several bakeries with a variety of goods: I got a raspberry and a peach pie to bring home. Both were excellent. And we tried Dutch Letters, which were S shaped pastry filled with almond paste (tasted like almond kringle to me.) There were many places to purchase various types of healthy foods. Different types of musicians were playing in different areas. Lots of different crafts and jewelry, etc. We spent about 2 hours walking the whole thing.

By BigQ81 |

Lot's of vendors and some really great samples and overall a great day of fun get there early as this is a very large market and wear some good walking shoes.

By Deb7556 |

The Des Moines Downtown Farmers Market has gotten so busy it almost isn't enjoyable. The streets are so thick with people it's taking away the enjoyment. The restaurants along the path add to the pleasure as you can sit inside or outside a number of them and watch the chaos ensue. The selection of vegetables is amazing but a number of the booths carry items that have been brought in from other states in boxes. Yet, it remains the GO TO place where all the excitement is on Saturday mornings, with music and breakfast availalbe on the streets of downtown Des Moines. And dogs, don't forget the dogs. If nothing else it's a great place to people watch.

By 394tedm |

I do think name should be dog parade.
It is way too crowded for everyone to bring their dog. Just not the place.

By Mary K |

Lot's of fresh veggies, baked goods, crafts and eats to choose from!! We go almost every Saturday morning. Last week I purchased a Blueberry Fried Pie from the Amish ladies - OH What a treat!! There is also a Jam Lady who has the most yummy jam! Must do.

I heard that this is the #2 market in the US. It is certainly huge with tons of produce options. We did the entire market in an hour, but that was at a pretty fast pace. Parking was a bit of an issue. We ended up parking in a parking garage (which was perfect for our needs). I would go often if I lived in the area.

By SharieN_13 |

I was amazed hat how huge this market was, I could have stayed all day unfortunately I only had an hour. The place is definately crowded but still worth the visit, food was fantastic, coffee great and people were so friendly. I really enjoyed it.

By Daphne D |

It is a bustling, exciting adventure! The art, the food, the art, the food. If you can handle the crowd, it's a do not miss when in Des Moines.

By Sandy N |

The Farmer's Market is a great atmosphere. Go early if you don't like crowds since after 9:00 it is filled with strollers and dogs and lots of people. There are many food vendors, fruits and vegetable booths, jewelry and art booths also. It was extremely hot while I was there so either bring plenty of water or there are plenty of places to purchase it.

By Patti D |

I enjoy going to the downtown farmers market however there are way too many dogs with owners who do not control them. They let them get right up to the stands and sniff and lick produce, food, drink, etc. Also the stands that sell jewelry, pottery, etc need to be on a separate street and away from the food. I will continue to go every Saturday even with the dogs.

By jtboyles |

Best market in the Midwest! Go early for the best selection, as soon as it opens if not before.
Plan to eat and browse!

By Becci W |

Every one of the many aspects make this Saturday AM experience VERY Positive ... something for everyone:))

By Rpod-lady |

This market is epic. There are food vendors galore, local artists, gardeners, vendors selling everything imaginable. Why else do hundreds of thousands show up every week? If you are within 50 miles of the DSM metro on a Saturday in the summer, do yourself a favor and head to the market. If you have a friendly dog, they'd love the market, too. Go early. Parking can be a bit tricky once the crowds amass.

By 2babesandabrew |

We are traveling thru the area and decided to go to the farmers market today. Well I would not call this a farmers market. I would call it a food convention. Very disappointing not many farm stands here.

By jlsixtyeight |

Des Moines is the heart of Iowa, and Iowa's farmers are the circulatory system for the world. You can find all types of wonderful things here, however, don't miss the Giant cinnamon rolls.

By Ha Ha H |

Nice place a lot of people. You would think the as big as the area is there would be enough room to many animals for my taste in a food environment

By Alanda Lanclos |

Went to the farmers market for the first time downtown since I've lived in des moines. It has a nice setup. I have say that they offer good variety and the only thing I wish I could have seen was more fruit but as my husband explained it was probably a bit early in the season for it. I really enjoyed how they offered different food vendors as well as staples like mustards, jams, etc. I will go here again as often as possible.

By museumfan68 |

Get here as early as possible! Parking is an issue because this is so popular. Plenty of great, local produce vendors including chemical free. There are so many delicious food stands to choose from. Dog friendly. Great music at the corners. Flying Frog has some hard to find hostas!

By spanishpeeks |

Amazing variety of egetables, fruits, cheese, crafts, flowers, music, and just a lot of fun. Most locally grown. Get breakfast at one of the many stalls offering international favorites, get fresh juice and coffee, or go into one of the restaurants open on Court Avenue. Sit down for a while and people watch and listen to musicians.

By blandboy |

Tons of venders, plenty of food, big crowds...one of the best! As they say, shop early for best selection (and parking). Seriously, depends on time of year, but you can find pretty much everything seasonal here. Great people-watching, too.

By Tony C |

Excellent experience a real mix of vendors, lot of variety, local merchant resturants fabulous, and parking at the baseball stadium easy close and free,

By Abbeycat |

One of the. Best farmers markets I’ve ever been too! I wish I lived closer it is such a delightful experienc! There is something for everyone! Parking was pleasant!

By Anne |

Always a favorite when we visit Des Moines. Great food and local products and produce. I would recommend!

By Jodi P |

The. Des Moines farmers market is a great way to spend a Saturday morning!! So much food! Clothing, crafts, and entertainment. Kid and dog friendly!!

By aatbender |

We love a good farmers market and this was perhaps the biggest and best I’ve ever seen. It covers a half dozen blocks downtown. The mix of vendors is amazing. A few musical groups were also performing. The most fun part was seeing all the sweet dogs that people were walking. Highly recommended.

By Tonette3 |

Des Moines has one of the best Farmers Markets around. There is something for everyone to enjoy! Fresh produce, local artist from pottery to jewelry, fresh flowers and fresh pastries, local businesses are open. I’d recommend going early! The streets are packed by 10am with wall to wall people. We enjoy it as a family, with friends or just taking time to alone to shop.

By 1PalapasOnTheBeach |

We could have walked from our hotel, nope, took shuttle. Happy we did, requested driver to drop us off at further end so we could walk back to hotel at end of visit. Driver took us for a joy ride around town, a must see. Opposite side of this FM on Friday night they had a Symphony. Near the five gold domed State Capitol. It was getting crowded at 4pm with all the lawn chairs.

Iowa is lovely, I'm in love! Several pubs and dining to find.

Lots of people, all FM are crowded. This one is pretty tight with people, elbow to elbow. Very hard to pass anyone, impossible. Unless you walk out on sidewalk, out of main drag.

Live music, lots of food, lots of fresh veggies which are reasonably priced. We bought greenbeans.

It took us an hour to walk, located on three streets combined of seven blocks approximately. When we saw food sections we turned around and kept walking. Remember to wear good supporting sneakers not sandals, lots of walking. Bring your canvas bags for shopping. Hours are eight to twelve Saturdays.

Parking - you have to pay meters M-Sat.

Downtown Farmer's Market is an amazing place to meet new people, experience new foods, and simply enjoy a day in a festive atmosphere.

By debbmm |

Could not believe how large it is with its gorgeous produce, delectable pastries, great music on every corner, stunning flowers, creative gift ideas... such a fun way to spend a Saturday morning

By Shravan244 |

This is an awesome place to get your vegetables, these are fresh and most of them organic. Sad that they are closed during Winter. :(. But i will definitely recommend buying vegetables from here.

By Joys2011 |

This is a huge market. They offer fresh vegetables, flowers, and plenty of prepared foods to enjoy. There is also plenty of other good shopping and entertainment. The only downside is that it does get very busy. We think it is worth it.

By Jaime M |

We love to go to downtown Farmers Market in the spring, summer and fall! We go for the fresh produce, homemade goods like jams or crafty items, great food stands and lots of friendly people. Whenever my family is in town, they always want to go. We love to support local vendors!

By Cswanson29 |

It is a nice setup and tons of vendors but there are so many dogs, small and huge on extended leashes. One ate part of my breakfast and the owner just laughed. The are also a tone of strollers and pop up wagons. It is too much of a hassle for me. I just wanted to wander from vendor to vendor but it’s just not possible. Some people may love the Disneyland atmosphere plus 100 pound dogs on long leashes but for me it was more irritating than enjoyable. Good luck!

By Cindy W |

The day we went to the market was raining and a little cold but, it kept the crowds down. Lots of variety and something for everyone.
The vendors were very helpful and mostly friendly.
Try the eggrolls! Lots of food and veggies, flowers, art.

By RedMustang56 |

Much larger than expected, this is less of a “farmers” market, and more a series of small venues in downtown Des Moines. Lots of food options, crafts, things to see and do - and some vegetables, breads, and baked goods as well. Easy to navigate to and relatively reasonable parking options.A fun way to spend Saturday morning.

By Bigdog77 |

We visited the farmers market with my son and his family.i expected booths with vegetables. There where these booths, and all sorts of food booths, Live music, art, handcrafted items.it was huge. I mean something for everyone. This was great, I want to go again.

By Jay Y |

The Farmers Market has an excellent offering of farm produce, cheeses, pastured meats and crafts beyond imagination. Also, a great variety of eats are on offer. But, for me, that is a problem: it has grown too large. The crowds are huge to the point you can hardly move on the streets to get to the vendors. If you are looking for a specific product, it is very difficult find the right vendor. Also, parking has become a problem in that the last couple times I went this Summer and Fall, I ended up parking over a half mile from the market.

By millardtl |

Des Moines is a large city selection with small town feel. This Farmer's Market had so much culture variation for food, Lots of live music, and all the fresh fruit and veggies you could want! Very diverse. Very good.

By Frank B |

this farmers market Wanderers down many roads and intersections in the downtown court Avenue District area. There is so much to see and buy everything is so fresh & a great value. I just wish the summer was a little longer so that the farmers market wouldn't have to come to an end every October.

By Tania O |

Vibrant Market with a lot of interesting options.
one of my favorite markets so far that i visited. ended up getting a fresh hot dog which was delicious.

By PhilWise |

The Des Moines Downtown Farmers Market has been rated as one of top farmers markets in the country. As someone who attends weekly, I understand why.

By Gary D |

Iowans are nice, friendly, knowledgeable folks who have one of best Farmer's Markets in the country. Rated second or third nationally I believe. It should be number one. The venue of the FM is fantastic. Variety of food from local farmers, clothing, homemade pies and candy just to mention a few items available. Live music helps create a wonderful atmosphere. Also lots of dogs (non-threatening) that will let you pat them on the head.

By Meron G |

The Des Moines Farmers Market draws quite the crowd from all surrounding areas to enjoy local produce, wine and bakery. My best advice - go early! While the farmers market is quite sizeable, the many blocks continue to fill up by 10am with strollers, children and dogs. Even after experiencing farmers markets in larger cities, I'd say Des Moines' Farmers Market is still my favorite - variety of goods, great deals on fresh produce, and ready to eat breakfast treats!

By sierra876 |

So many great vendors at the Des Moines Farmer's Market. Great fresh produce from May through October. Makes me sad how many people are there for free samples but do not buy from the vendors.

By Beth R |

If you are a local or a visitor, the farmers market is a must on a free weekend! So many vendors, from fruits and veggies, breakfast or lunch, home decor, wine, music and more! It's for all ages, however, on a hot day, young children and older individuals might not enjoy it as much. There are plenty of bars and restaurants downtown to sit at to take a break, or just keep walking around. Bigger groups can definetly go but you might get split up because people will want to stop and look at different booths. We love the Farmer's Market!

By sadieh923 |

HUGE farmers market!!!! We live in Minneapolis. Best farmers market and food I have ever seen and been to. We stayed at the Surety hotel a block away and could see it from our room. We were able to buy food at the market and bring into Pints bar for a bloody Mary and other beverages.
Sat outside and watched people walk by. We tried to make it down to everything the market had but missed a couple side streets.
What a great find on a sunny Iowa September day!!!!

By alicer12 |

This farmers market has something for everyone. Obviously, there is a wealth of fresh produce and farm-raised meats -- many organic or grass-fed for those who are looking for those specialties. Gluten-free options are also available. Artisan cheeses, breads, honey -- and many varieties of delicious foods to eat on-site. Clothes, jewelry, wine, home and lawn decor, plants and flowers..... If you want something, it's probably here. A fun way to spend a Saturday morning!

By Dianne E |

We were recently in town for a Wedding and our hotel was very close to the Famers Market. It was a wonderful experience, many vendors with many different choices of fresh produce, meat, goods, etc. To my delight there was a couple of pastry vendors that had Dutch Letters. If any of you have had the Dutch letters from Pella and crave them...they are a this farmer's market !!! I live out of state now and have not been to Pella since I was in HS many years ago, the Dutch Letters were just as I had remembered them! What a treat!
I am sure that if you attend this Farmer's Market you will NOT be disappointed. Iowa is the bread basket of the world for a reason!

By Iowadutchgirl |

Breakfast burritos, homemade bread, live music, belly dancers, fresh produce, orchids and flowers, jewelry, pastries...something for everyone! Free parking in the downtown parking garages. We arrive by 8:30am and there's plenty left. On the way home stop by Graziano Brother's Italian market at 1601 South Union which is just a few miles away. Quaint, quirky and everything Italian. You'll LOVE it! (Just past the Cub's stadium.)

By Max S |

The farmers market downtown is always a good time. Many vendors cater to all tastes. Farm Bros have great breakfast burritos. You can buy a bouquet of flowers or fresh produce. Dogs are welcome.

By Margie B |

The farmers market in Des Moines Iowa has to be one of the largest there is. You can find just about anything there and have a good lunch as you walk through

By Pamela Cuthbertson |

This market is huge! All the produce and merchandise is great quality and very varied. Also there are a lot of terrific musicians playing in various places in the market. A must do in Des Moines.

By thor2705 |

I always visit the Farmers Market in a new city, if one exist. This one is one of the best I visited. Is having everything that you will expect in a market and even more like clothing and other useful stuff

By Marlabingo V |

Farmers market is always a delight. Tons of music, food, drink, and fun. Highly recommend going before 9 in the morning to avoid massive crowds.

By timiniowa |

I get really irritated when I see a fruit or veggie stand at the downtown farmers market and the produce has UPC stickers on it. A farmers market should only be for farmers.
I also get irritated by the constant nattering of those who say dogs should be banned from the market. You know what should be banned? Strollers. And while we're at it, ban whining kids too.
But I digress.
Look for local produce. Buy craft items from family run businesses. Pick up grass fed and free range meat from the guy with the dirty old industrial coolers. But avoid the corporate stands. Boycott them.
And while you are there grab a sidewalk table, have a bloodymary or three and pet the beautiful dogs as they trot by.

Go early, before 8:30 , to avoid the crush of baby pushing dog haters.

Bring lots of cash, everything is overpriced.

By Megan M |

Always great vendors, good prices and great variety!! Amazing food and vendors are all super nice and great samples. Love buying product and then sitting along the river at The Riverwalk Hub.

By Linda M |

It's is one of the best farmers market so much to see the people have so much to sale with great price and it's so great location for all places

By ILUV2SEE |

Visiting the Des Moines Farmers Market has been on my bucket list for quite some time. This morning I squeezed in a quick visit. What a lovely atmosphere. Live music, all ages of people, their kids and dogs enjoying a wide array of vegetables, fruits, food of all types, art, flowers - you name it! I even saw fresh watermelon:). My purchases included smoked Gouda cheese made in the Pella area and freshly made apple strudel . The market is located in downtown Des Moines- close to the HyVee Hall of Fame (Iowa High School Champions) and the Science center. It's easy to find. I definitely plan to return!

By Adam S |

This is probably one of the largest farmers markets I have ever been to! They have everything from fresh farm produce, fresh eggs, artisan soaps, pastries to food vendors and live music! I tried a pupusas from a local food vendor, and it was amazing! There was also a pep band style group of musicians, with a sousaphone, playing covers.

By Roetter937 |

This is not your typical farmers market...it’s a farmers market on steroids. Amazing produce, flowers, handmade products mixed in with delicious food. Stopped at a stand the had fresh produce and also was serving breakfast. Live music, activities for children. Truly a must if your in Des Moines on a Saturday morning.

By SoccerDad |

We love to get up early on Saturday and head downtown to the farmers market. The kids love to try all of the various samples and we never have any trouble finding something great to eat for breakfast while we are there. The market has such a great variety of fresh fruits and vegetables that we always go home with several bags full of them. I would recommend going early as it does tend to get crowded later in the morning.

By AnnieTigers |

This farmers market is one of the best I've ever been to in my life. Music, food, shopping--just an incredible atmosphere with about anything you want. If you are in there area take the time to visit this.

By 007mom2seven |

Our family spent a couple hours meandering through the stalls lining the streets in downtown Des Moines. The market had a good variety of stuff for sale. They had great produce, fresh from nearby family farms. We bought donuts, egg rolls, smoothies, bread, and home made ginger ale. Every corner had a musicians or singers. We heard an amazing, rocking, electric violinist.

By momoffivekiddos |

We just walked around and visited with some of the vendors on our way to an event downtown. We didn't even realize the market was here and kind of stumbled upon it. It had a great selection of veggies and plants and if we lived in the area (we live out of state) I think we would come here every week.

By Millie1998 |

100+ vendors that sell everything from home grown vegetables, baked goods, new items, lawn art etc. The atmosphere is fantastic as people walk with coffee, their dogs, or children. Don't miss this!

By Kim K |

Spent the morning visiting my daughter and she suggested going to the Farmers Market. We had a wonderful time. Had a great variety of stands, great food, entertainment and very reasonable prices. Was easy to find and we did not have any problem finding parking. Highly recommend taking some time to visit the Farmers Market.

By Squirrel |

We have been coming to this farmers market for years - and I remember how Jaw-dropping it was the first time I went! It’s huge and so much fun! Everything you can imagine and more - all the farm fresh fruits and vegetables you can imagine, home baked goodies like fruit tarts, huge cinnamon rolls, cakes, and cookies. Honey, salsas, wine, crafts vendors, flowers and plants, live music, doesn’t town bars and restaurants, and don’t forget all the breakfast food trucks! Popcorn, coffee stands, balloon animals, ethnic foods, spices, jellies... so much of everything! You have to experience this!

By sallyla63 |

This is one of the best farmers markets I've ever been to. We tend to go almost every Saturday for breakfast. There is always something new to try or purchase. Just a fun way to start the day!

By Amy M |

Best farmers' market around! There are so many options...fresh produce, music, jewelry, meats and cheeses, plants, artist booths, etc. Something for everyone.

By Katherine K |

Such a great Saturday morning thing to do! Fun atmosphere, music, the smell of the fresh food and different cuisines being served. People walking their dogs, children playing, live music. Lots of different crafts as well, jewelry, decorations, seasonal gifts. We really enjoy the Downtown Farmers Market and highly recommend it for your summer/fall bucket list!

By Megan M |

This is one of the top things to do on a Saturday in Des Moines. The food and fresh produce is worth the trip alone. Its a great event to take your dog or pet other dogs. There's great finds for crafts and home goods as well.

By Trvl4vr |

The Downtown Farmers Market is a must see for anyone living or visiting in Des Moines. It is held every Saturday from May through October and the hours are 7 AM to Noon. There is almost everything you could want at the market. There are booths that serve breakfast items, pastries, meats and produce. Many booths sell clothing items or unique jewelry. Approximately 20,000 people attend each week with many more on holiday weekends. I recommend that you make a trip to the Farmers Market whenever you are in town.

By Julie L |

Good time. Lots of variety. Great food at the market and some restaurants in the area. Go early before it gets busy.

By Karen H |

Love the farmers market! Food, art, crafts, flowers. live music. Something new all the time.Great place for any age. You won't leave hungry or empty handed

By Molly-Mayrose |

LOTS of people, LOTS of booths, selling everything from produce to crafts, to flowers, etc. Make sure to grab a cup of coffee and some freshly baked or cooked food, because strolling from booth to booth will make you hungry! Fun, eclectic street fair.

By hazmatt457 |

It's diverse and stretches for blocks. Anything you might want in a farmers market is there. Culinary cultural diversity, great music and a wide variety of wares-pottery, crafts, jewelry, flowers, fresh fruit and vegetables in a great setting.

By Jennifer H |

So much to see, and do! We always eat breakfast Saturday morning at the farmers market! Excellent produce and a fun family day

By Zita L |

I am fortunate to live in Des Moines so I go to the market most Saturday mornings. I have been to many others while traveling. Nothing compares to this one. We are lucky enough to live in the heart of the Midwest and get the best offerings at our market. It is fun just to walk around even if you aren't needing any produce.

By DrC84 |

The biggest farmer's market in Iowa and probably one of the best in the USA. Court St , Des Moines Iowa. Could go to the market and take a walk easily and see the historic Capital of Iowa with its golden dome or take in an afternoon game with the Iowa Cubs !

By Coleen K |

Well organized, super variety, friendly vendors+best farmers market in the midwest, maybe in the US. Definitely a must see!

By lewismarkwood |

Successful choices for food, flowers, fun and families (and their dogs) is the hallmark of the Des Moines Farmers Market. We go as often as possible, spring to Thanksgiving!
Don't miss Farm Boys Breakfast Burritos. Flower choices from freshly cut to orchids are available. Taste international offerings. Dessert? Dutch letters, cinnamon rolls, fruit pies!
Street instrumental or vocal entertainment, balloon artists and face paint entertain kids and their people!

By WER369 |

This is the best farmers market in the Midwest! There is a plethora of vendors from all over the state. An amazing variety of entertainment and lots of delicious food to eat. If you don't come to shop then you should come for the people watching, there are plenty of pets, too. Definitely put this on your list of things to do on a Saturday morning!!

By Januarybride01 |

My son and I thought it was super cool. Hubby said it was too busy and all the booths had the same stuff LOL. There were a ton of amazing options for breakfast - the stuffed fried Italian dough sandwiches and the breakfast pizza (with gravy) looked amazing. Lots of fresh produce. Local honey. Fresh baked goods. Lots of families and lots of dogs. I thought it was great!

By Cindy B |

Lots of fruits and vegetables. Flowers, honey, bakery items, breakfast sandwiches, candy, jewelry, cutlery, clothing, whatever you are looking for, if it is fresh or homemade it may be here. Plus live music. Good way to spend a Saturday morning.

By juliafrey |

Love the size, scope, and location of the Des Moines Farmers Market. Quintessential Iowa at its finest! Farm fresh produce, honey, eggs, meat, crafts, food vendors, and our favorite, the Iowa Coffee Company! Take a morning stroll and enjoy this wonderful community gathering

By Allison K |

Favorites include the burrito stand (can't think of the name), Strudel Haus, Big Sky Bread, Iowa Coffee Company. Also a great location for picking some fresh flowers!

By Linda |

Great variety of items! Homemade goodies and artwork! Wonderful music, friendly market, and fun for all!

By wlamb123 |

Well worth the visit. It seems everyone in Iowa comes to the farmer's market in Des Moines. Numerous vendors, good breakfast options, lots of produce and fruit drinks. The place to be on Saturday mornings.

By ASH5005 |

When family or guests come to town, the Downtown Farmers Market is high on the priority list to take in. It's a free, casual street market, complete with musicians, food vendors, and lots of high quality produce and baked goods. Dogs are welcome, and the tractor pulled "train" is popular with the under 8 set. Court avenue itself is open for business too, and when the stress of buying onions and watermellon become too much, you can step into one of several bistros for a cold beer or a full meal. This is a fun destination for families with small children, or adults. Go see it.

By tish1617 |

I love the Saturday morning downtown Farmer's Market! From the fresh variety of foods, to hot cooked breakfast dishes (burritos is my fav!) to the bloody mary and mimosa stands. The live music. Hand made clothes, jewelry and other goods. Great to see friends and former co-workers. People and dog watching is always fun too.

By DianaKansasCity |

I thought this Farmers Market, held on Saturdays during the summer, was great! It covered 4 streets, and had a great number of booths, with many organic offerings!

By NatureBoo |

This was a fun experience. The booths seemed to go on and on. There was some farm produce but it seemed to be mostly different food booths and other products. My daughter enjoyed an interactive experience with one of the musicians performing on the corner. She was able to play some musical instruments.

By hansen216 |

Many places have samples and great food! Great music as you stroll between the vendors! Great coffee places were an unexpected bonus!

By Nomad815520 |

I have been to many farmers markets around the country, but this hands down has got to be THE BEST! So much to see and do! Buy breakfast, buy treats, a nice bread. Buy cheeses, wine, honey. Listen to live music. Buy jewelry, artwork. And don’t forget to buy the locally grown produce here in America’s garden!

By K9897EIlindan |

Really great outdoor market experience. Wide range of vendors including fresh produce, other home made food products, crafts, and goods made by local/regional entrepreneurs. A must see if in Des Moines. Well worth the drive.

By IowaTraveler22 |

We've been to a number of Farmer's Markets around the country and the one in Des Moines if one of the largest and the best. if you ever think Des Moines doesn't have a multi-cultural environment then one stop at the Market will forever change that image. Great vendors, fresh food and good music ever Saturday from May through October

By mojozenguy |

If you're in town or up for a road trip. GO!
Great food, great entertainment, great produce, great everything! You can even bring your dog.
I promise you, there is something there for everyone. Even if you just want to people watch. Best farmers market I've been to hands down.

By Kelly M |

A fun way to spend Saturday morning. Get there early for a better place to park ! By 1000 the streets are packed with people, strollers, pets and great people watching

By herkiescamper |

Lots of vendors food vendors. We like to getting the Banditos tacos for breakfast. There is lots of free family fun. Usually Market music is playing.

By Worldtraveller21 |

This is a fantastic farmers market spanning approx 4 blocks. There are a wide variety of vendors from fruit/veg, cheese, meat, bakery to arts, wine, flowers. There are plenty of options to eat. This was a really impressive market

By Cello12345 |

Not sure I've ever seen a farmer's market this large or this popular. When we went on a Saturday morning in July, it was 4 blocks long, and spilling out into the side streets on either side. All of the streets had been blocked off, and it was wall-to-wall people! A circular traffic flow had been established - shuffle along with the crowd or you might get bumped into... In addition to actual farm produce, there were crafts, jewelry, wines, condiments, baked goods, a huge diversity of prepared food, and more! Musicians played on nearly every street corner. Definitely an experience to remember.

By Tonya K |

Huge farmers market! A great variety and reasonable prices! We thoroughly enjoyed walking around and experiencing this market!

By Sue L |

Downtown Des Moines presents well with a large Saturday AM Farmers Market. Plenty of samples, arts, flowers, and free entertainment. It gets crowded with strollers and pets. Go earlier for less of that type of traffic. Several local bars also have outdoor entertainment and Bloody Mary drink specials. Feels safe and is a pretty great time for multiple ages!

By Melissa P |

Everywhere. If you are looking for a variety of bloody mary's with some good food and shopping, go down to the DSM farmers market! So fun. The people watching alone is worth it!

By Caryl D |

Beautiful morning to wonder the street venders in downtown Des Moines for locally grown farm produce and hand crafted products. It doesn't get much better than this.

By Jeff O |

This year's farmers market opened today. Many many new vendors. Different music being played. Lots of fresh items and so much food. The breakfast burrito was my favorite. And as usual lots and lots of people and the weather was fabulous

By Kim R |

My wife and I try to make it to the Farmers market in downtown Des Moines at least a few times each summer because it is a great place to get fresh produce, eggs and meat. Sadly, you have to get there very early to get any eggs as those sell out quickly. But just about everything under the sun is available all morning. Crafts, jewelry and many, many food options are always a mainstay of the FM. I was sad to see that Tacopocalypse was not there as I love their tacos. But plenty of other swell edibles were available.
Some people complain about dogs, but I have yet to see any excrement in the street or witness a dog fight, so I say get over it to the dog haters.
If you live here or are just visiting, you have to make a go of the Farmers market just for the experience. It is a Saturday morning well spent!

By mdparker0410 |

Beautiful area couldn't have a better location. Fresh produce and great personalities. EBT is also accepted at the Farmers Market.

By NetteLee |

Des Moines farmers market is amazing! Be sure to visit the Rhinehart farm by the Court House, Storybook Orchard on 4th, and the watermelon Carver in 4th and Court! Look what she made for my sister!

By Penny N |

This market is huge! However, it only lasts until noon and after about 10 it is so crowded you can't see anything. I am not sure if everything is organic and local.Good to see a farmer's market so well supported by a community.

By CraftBeers |

This is a really well done farmer's market. Court Ave from about 2nd street to 4th street is closed off every Saturday morning from 7:00 AM to noon May through October. The street is lined with tents, merchants, musicians and booths. Most of the tables are selling produce and true farm to market food. Surprisingly, there were not many crafts and arts table, which I appreciated. This really is a farmers market.

The whole area can be explored in about 1 1/2 hours. Several booths have musicians set up, so they add nicely to the atmosphere. Other booths do have ready to serve items like coffee, root beer, breakfast muffin, sandwiches and bbq.

If you plan to visit in the heat of the summer, come early. It's hot by 9:00 or 10:00 AM. If you have dogs, bring them. They are everywhere. Parking can be found on all the streets surrounding the market. There is a parking garage at 4th and court. Many of the restaurants are open early or have patios where you can sit and enjoy the crowds and music.

I really liked this market. It has a wide variety of farm to market offerings.

This market has vegetables, fruits, musicians, craft vendors, and food vendors. It is several blocks long. There is free parking available in nearby parking garages. It opens at 7 am in the summer and a little later in the late fall. We were there on September 30th. We arrived about 8 am and had no trouble parking. There were lots of people shopping at the market, but it wasn't crowded. A couple hours later, it was very crowded and people were having trouble finding parking. It is definitely a fun place to do some shopping for produce and crafts. However, you need to come early to find parking and avoid the huge crowds. It is certainly an event that many people attend.

So much to see. So many vendors, great food and great music and great people. Best way to spend a Saturday morning.

Wide variety of products available and fun way to explore optional foods and products. There are also many taste sampling stations of foods, wines and services offered.

I'm up about the time the vendors show up to set up. I've been going for years and live right there. Here's some insider tips... Get there before 10am, both for parking and access to vendors. You can drive around looking for parking, but still costs (even on the street)...I suggest parking garage at 3rd/Court, which is usually $5 cash. Veggies are about the same price or more compared to stores. Sweets are mostly overpriced considering most get skimpy on the yummy stuff...not enough filling in pies, cookies small but expensive....frustrating. I recommend Frisian Farms for your cheese, Mao's for egg rolls/spring rolls and sauce,

One of the nicest downtown settings for a farmers market. Located near the river and is the middle of everything. This market shows off the beauty of this midwest city and the vendors are excellent. There is also live entertainment and prepared food so you can snack and be entertained as you check out the vendor booths. All terrific Iowa produce and some excellent ethnic vendors as well.

After being able to experience the NW version of Farmers Markets, we didn't think we'd see anything at that level. While the DSM version can't compare when it comes to flowers, mushrooms, etc.. it does compare VERY favorably when it comes to the # of vendors and great food. Easy to get to, right downtown on Court Avenue. Many great selections if you want to grab coffee and breakfast as you wander or if you want to put your head down and just shop like mad. If you are a resident or a visitor, take the time to experience it, at least once. It does attract several thousand attendees every weekend, so going early might be the best call... and there is zero shortage of dogs wandering with their owners. So if you don't care for the pups, just be aware.

I live in a city with an amazing Farmer's Market but Des Moines has our's beat by a long way! I loved all the freebie goodies and sips of beer and wine! Great party atmosphere with live music and entertainment and kid's activities. It was my favorite activity during our trip to Des Moines!

By Jerri L |

We live in Johnston and often plan bike outings early on Saturday mornings so that we can bike the 12.5 miles to the market with friends! Once there we check out the vendors, enjoy coffee and breakfast and have a great time then bike home. The bike valet is safe and perfect for parking bikes so we can check out the market! Be ready for long lines and make sure if you have your heart set on a certain breakfast burrito or wrap or other specialty food item you get there early and don't not wait until right before shut down or you might be disappointed because some of the most popular vendors do run out! Cash is best way to pay unless you stop at an establishment in the market layout which accepts credit or debit. There are cash machines as well where you can use your card to get cash but remember most charge a fee if they aren't your bank. Always look forward to market season! Des Moines' market is one of the best and biggest!

This building has so much history and beautiful architecture! Definitely a must see when you visit Des Moines.

By K9087NMjohns |

Get there early because the lines for the good food spots get long. All the parking garages are free on the weekends so that shouldn't be an issue if you don't mind walking from one a little further away because the one on court ave will fill up fast. There is a great variety of shops and you can find something to satisfy anyone.

By Lisa B |

There are so many great vendors to buy from as well as to get something to eat from. Grab a bite and listen to the music from several artists/groups. And don't forget to buy your fresh bouquet of flowers for the week,

By culater123 |

There's lots of produce vendors, all kinds of food offered, and hand-made items made by local artists, music, even dancing. There was also an assortment of emergency vehicles, firetrucks, etc. there for the little kids to see. It's great for the whole family. We were actually in Des Moines for a wedding and someone at our hotel mentioned the market to us. We were able to walk to the market and had a great time. In fact, we had lost track of time and had to make a run for the hotel to change and get to the wedding on time. We could have stayed there much longer than we did. We will absolutely go back.

By Joel H |

Walked for hours. Place was packed and great array of vendors and merchants. Loved the snacks, samples, food and live entertainment.

By NNYL321 |

Lots of vendors and much variety. There was an abundance of fresh vegetables. Every section had a different musical group/genre playing!!

By Neal_is_biking |

This is one of the biggest farmers' markets anywhere. I love the El Salvadoran Pupusas. Pork & Cheese Pupusas are my favorite Saturday breakfast. This vendor is on 3rd St. I regularly get cookies, bread, pie, meat, tomatoes, and greens here.

By missysm0m |

It was very enjoyable! Good to get out when colder weather gets here! Found some good food to bring home and enjoy!

By Mandi M |

There is no shortage of beautiful fruits and vegetables. cheese samples, juicy peaches, and sweet peppers of all colors. It is always an experience to enjoy live music and some of the best barbecue in town. Best to hit the market when they open at 7 am and avoid the crowds.

By jah3560010 |

Great selection of vendors ranging from local produce to crafts. But the best was the food vendors serving their best in 90 degree heat. So many nice, pleasant people. Great to see communities come together and support local stores, restaurants and farmers. Hats off to all that support this wonderful weekly event! Thank you!

By saraschnuettgen |

I have been going to this for the past three years as I go to school in Des Moines. I wish I could go every Saturday as it is just amazing. So many things to see, people, dogs, little children, and yummy food. You don't even need to buy anything you can just walk around for a few hours. I recommend checking it out if you haven't. They have the best lemonade and smoothies around.

By Bonnie F |

An outstanding farmer's market. Lots to see and buy. All vendors were friendly. Places to sit along with the way if you needed a rest. You have to make your way to the middle of the market to find the information booth. The market is dog friendly. Most dogs were well behaved, I did hear a few growl, which was unsettling.

By mnghali |

I just love the this farmer's market. Great prepared food, amazing farmers, wonderful produce. The atmosphere is wonderful. Its always a delight to go there when I go home.

By ShoeConnoisseur |

Love the atmosphere, the different vendors, food selection, arts & crafts, flowers, and ready to eat food. Get there early for best selections.

By hveach |

No matter what season, you're sure to find something you love @ the Downtown Farmers Market. Whether you like to buy fresh seasonal produce, munch your way from one end to the other or just people watch...you will not be disappointed. There is live music on many street corners and fun activities for the kids too.

By Daniel P |

Over the past 15 years I have grown to love the Des Moines Downtown Farmers Market. Great atmosphere, lots of fresh local eats. Always recommend if you are here on a Saturday from May to November.

By DDowler |

Finished up at the World Food Prize and walked through the Farmers Market. The BBQ and Bakery (can't remember the exact name) was probably the best BBQ sandwich I have ever had. If your in town on a Saturday it's worth a stop.

By Gavin S |

Great farmers market. So much yummy authentic food. So many options, great environment. Good music too.

By kymkessler |

Massive farmers market! Beautiful vegetable stands and tons of vendors with art, clothing jewelry, etc.
Musicians on corners playing a variety of music. Plenty of parking. We love it!

By Carla M |

This market does not disappoint. It can be crowded on nice days but worth the trip. In addition to the fresh flowers and vegetables you would expect, there is a wide variety of food, jewelry, clothing etc. Don't let the length of the line at the Farm Boys Breakfast Burrito stand scare you away. It moves quickly and worth the wait. Dog friendly however if your dog is not well behaved, I strongly suggest leaving it home. Come for the morning and stay after it ends at noon to take in many of the other sites downtown.

By Christopher C |

This is one of the things that you must do when you travel to Des Moines. It is one of the top farmer markets in the country and has grown into a larger market. You can find the produce that you need a long with so much more. Homemade goodies a long with food, fun and entertainment.

Going here early is a great way to enjoy more peace and quiet as it picks up as the you approach the noon hour. Find something fun to do with Yoga in the park to start your day about a mile away and then go tour the East Village.

By Johnny t |

Too many people, too many dogs. Rotten parking situation. Fraudulent vendors buying produce at hyvee and fairway then turning around and reselling it. Fraud! Perpetrators of fraud. Lousy experience.

This is a must do when Farmer's Market is in season.
So many great food options for breakfast and lunch.

By Jenny M |

Great variety of different items. Great location. Enjoyed our time there, of course there were a lot of people but we knew that going in. Go early to try and avoid the rush of people. We got there about 830 -9am and it was packed, but okay.

By Randy K |

Although this is the 2nd ranked Farmer's Market in the U.S., and there are a lot of good foods and people watching, I've gone for likely the last time.

I LOVE dogs, but not at the Farmer's Market. Whether on a leash which blocks people or not, they're not good with 70,000 people or so in one place.

Then, there are the people with the double wide strollers. I can see old people walking slowly and accept that. No issues, but when you have three or four or five obese people slooowwwwllly walking side by side and with that many people, I no longer see any point in going.

Really, the only way to get shopping and get out is to be there right at seven, or go on a rainy day, or when it turns cold just before closing for the season.

By Kelly K |

This is one the best farmers' markets in the whole country. Blocks and blocks of vendors selling TONS of produce, flowers, baked goods, jellys/jams/salsas and also homegoods. Beware - it can get very crowded. We had trouble navigating with a stroller. Go early for your best navigation, but be sure to go. It's great!

By ThePinTrip |

I have been to a farmers market is almost every state and this was average - cute little market in downtown Des Moines, very active in the summer time and like others said - theres stuff for everyone to do. Vendors and prices were okay - if you're in Iowa and are not sure what to do over the weekend, this might be a good couples activity.

By promopower |

There's a little bit of everything here, from great food (to go and food to eat while you're here) to flowers and plants to crafts to entertainment to people-and-pet-watching. And it's huge, so plan an hour or more to see it all. And it's appropriate for EVERYONE. Make it a Saturday morning date (why not?), time with the family, or just a chance to wander aimlessly by yourself. We take our granddaughter when she's in town, and it's a high point of her trip (especially the balloon man!). If you live in the Des Moines area, don't just go one weekend - there are different things available as the season changes.

By coldnovember9 |

It's so fun to be able to go to a Farmer's Market nearby with a great view. It's a great size without being overwhelming, and I had my first Dutch Letter ever there. DELICIOUS. I would definitely recommend this if you're able to walk. Dog-friendly for sure. Lots of variety for people to eat and/or shop.

By stone595 |

For the size of Des Moines, this gives even the big city markets a run for their money! Such a wonderful variety of food, produce, and crafts. True Heartland stuff!

By KimberlyT0602 |

You just gotta go! So many vendors, so many plants, so many veggies, so many craft artists, SO much FUN. Stop at a bar along Court St for a cocktail! Or take your own :). Starts @ 7. - get there early. If you don't you'll wish you did.

By RVIDI |

This is not your typical farmers market. I have visited several markets throughout the Midwest. Des Moines is by far the best. It is not a farmers market as much as it is an event. Yes, there are plenty of fresh veggies and jewelry booths but this market (held every Saturday during the spring, summer and fall and runs until noon) has lots of good eats (Farm Boys breakfast burrito is a must try) and entertainment.

The market runs about five blocks down Court Ave with legs that run a block to the south and the north all along the way. On many of the corners, you can find many different musical entertainers.

People watching is at it's best. People just meander up and down the way. Many bring their dogs. Some people do not care for the dogs. Personally, I love them. They all seem very well behaved. A great place to stop and people watch for a while is Mickey' Irish Pub. They serve $5 bloody marys and mimosas. They are really good!

Whether you are from out of town or a local, the Des Moines farmers market is definitely worth hitting. Stop by several times a year as the seasons change, so does the produce.

By init4keeps |

Family friendly. Dog friendly. Lots of different booths, foods, samples. Entertainment. A great morning. Marcydiner tantrum scale of 5/5-no screaming kids.

By 3ternalist |

I have been to the market dozens of times and have learned how to appreciate the market. The key to enjoying the DSM Farmers Market is that you must not be on a schedule. You must mentally prepare for babies, dogs, and shoulder-to-shoulder strolling...yes strolling because there is no walking with a purpose. I would liken this event a giant cocktail party where you slowly move among the crowd watching, talking, eating, and drinking.

Get there early while it is cool and not crowded, then post up and watch people, then around noon stroll over the Mullets for outdoor seating and a nice view of the city OR go to Hessen Haus for a giant German beer OR go to Confluence Brewery if you don't mind walking a couple miles on pleasant path where you can enjoy good beer inside or outside.

Biking to the Market is always great if you can do so by trails.

It is a great Saturday activity if you have the right mindset. Enjoy!

By briegel22 |

I wish I lived closer so I could get breakfast here every week! Great place for breakfast and other local food/crafts! Many stands have samples that you can try and depending on the weather it can get very crowded. We parked for free in one of the garages near by. It's a great way to get a feel for the local vendors. :-)

By Yvonne M |

Great day out with family was music beer and good bought lots of home grown fruit great place to go for free

By lmcjdw |

So much to see at the farmers market, the vendors are all so good and great food everywhere..Everyone should go

By Alanda Lanclos |

Hubby and I went to the farmers market on opening day this year and it was packed!! There were old and new vendors out and we enjoyed ourselves. I think this will be a great year at the market.

By SmhIAvisitor |

We really enjoyed the variety of items for sale. Veggies, flowers, snacks, breakfast, lunch, wine, coffee and pastries. We didn't have a pet with us but you can bring your dog. It was nice to visit with all the puppies while shopping. Parking was a challenge but that's mainly because of road construction in the area. The farmers market is a nice way to spend a few hours of family time.

By Georgena V |

I am from a small town where the farmers market is one block. To see this huge display of goods for sale by private people was quite the experience. The smells, the sites, and the sounds were almost overwhelming.

By off2jamaica |

What a great place to get fresh vegetables and food. However, when you have 20-25,000 people showing up each Saturday morning they need to ban the dogs and strollers. It seems every Saturday I either have a leash around a leg or my ankles get bumped by a stroller because they are too busy looking around and walking without seeing where there dog or stroller is going.

By R W |

The farmer’s market was very large with a lot of vendors a lot of diversity.
It was a fun morning visiting the variety of booths.

By Tom S |

Tons and tons of fresh produce, and unique farm raised specialties as well as crafts a little bit of entertainment and plenty to do

By Mobile214859 |

The downtown famers market is literally a smorgasbord of delightful temptations. There is something here for everyone. It's great for couples, families and even pet friendly. The long lines at some vendors is a tip that something really good is happening there!

By Iowaviking |

DSM Farmers Market has a wide and wonderful selection of products beyond fresh produce. There are metal art, stationary, jewelry, and more vendors. The prepared food booths are great as well from fresh pies and pastries to delicious wraps and sandwiches. The organizers do a good job of selecting reliable, honest vendors who are friendly, knowledgeable and have wonderful products.

By Karen C |

This is the largest and best farmers market we have been to. They have the best selection of produce, and pastries. The absolutely best thing there is the breakfast burritos! I had mine in a bowl-very fresh ingredients, nice people too! I wish I would remember the name of the place but it was at the end of the street, and they put chairs out against the building for everyone to sit on. Had a great time walking around the market. It is supposed to be open until 2pm but everyone starts to pack up at noon.

By Sylwiax3 |

A typical farmers market has a couple booths open. This market had SO many options and items to look at. From plants to food to toys, what ever you wanted you could try. Great place to spend the warm morning supporting small businesses.

By JoAnn A |

A farmer's market with variety. There seems to be a lot of vendors. This was our first time here. There were plants, flowers, vegetables, fruits, breads, coffees and prepared food. A fun atmosphere with some entertainment at each corner and some crafters selling their merchandise.

By Andrew F |

This has been nearly weekly staple for me and my boys. There are so many vendors, musicians and sites to see. It's fantastic. It's a great way to support local business.

By Jeremy T |

Great place to grab some local produce and try other local meats and cheeses. Also look for some local wineries. Sample what your shopping for before you purchase!

By Dave W. |

Great farmers market with a lot more available then you would expect. It can be brutal in the heat of the summer, but it is certainly worth a visit. Great food, many gift ideas, and lots of people bring their dogs, yep, animals everywhere!

By IrmaNova |

From 7am-12pm on Saturdays, take the time to wander through the Des Moines Farmer's Market. There are a variety of vendors with farm fresh produce, baked goods, jewelry and Iowa-made kitchen knives. It's a great place to have a bite and enjoy the best of Iowa's agriculture and products.

By Jody030 |

This is a early Saturday morning great experience. There is fresh produce, fresh meats, wonderful baked goods, crafts, flowers and entertainment and much more. Known as a top 10 rated US farmer's market. Get there early-7:30 am-for the best selection. Always a large crowd with all ages in attendance as well some with their pets. This market covers many blocks in downtown Des Moines and there are over 100 vendors.. The markets begin in April and run through October. There is free ramp and street parking available. There are many beautiful buildings and parks nearby.

By Jeff D |

It has a great variety but as the title says, it is packed and parking is a major headache. Some of the vendors are really expensive, but like all things like this, they eventually learn to have more competitive pricing.

By Froglovinlady |

The downtown farmer’s market has exploded, and there is something for everyone. There are tons of food vendors with all different types of foods. There are all kinds of fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, meats, and other homemade products like jams, jellies and even lots of artwork. The local bars have Bloody Mary and Mimosa specials if you are into that sort of thing, and there are various bands and performers along the area. (I imagine this will only get bigger and better as the river walk is expanded.)

When we told some friends from L.A. who were in the area for a wedding that they should check it out, they laughed and said how many farmer’s markets they have back at home. But they went anyway and could not stop raving about how they had never seen anything like it.

By tosiapuccini |

If you feel like buying home made cheeses, sausages, cakes etc. the Market is the place to go to on Saturday morning. It isn’t cheep but healthy they say! However, what was even more interesting than the selection of foods was the fact the one third of the people brought their dogs with them and what a wonderful sight it was! A lot of pedigree dogs as well as mixed breeds shopping together with the people who love them:-)

By nicolaspino1 |

I really enjoyed Des Moines Farmers Market. The streets are closed from vehicular traffic to allow pedestrian traffic. It was enjoyable to stroll around visiting the various vendors and observing all the people. Very neat event for a Saturday morning.

By Kari S |

I love the Downtown Farmer's Market! So many awesome booths, home grown food, and handmade trinkets. It will definitely not disappoint.

By Joe C |

Huge amount of food, produce and craft stands, extending for several square blocks with street musicians on every corner. Many, many dogs accompany lots and lots of people. This is great way to spend a Saturday morning in Des Moines. Enough free samples to keep you going for a couple hours, if that's what you wanted to do. We had some excellent grilled cheese sandwiches and enjoyed the dogs.

By whitandcheymom |

Great prices and variety of items.
Super hot and a ton of people.
Great food vendors also with really tasty food to eat while walking around.

By Ron T |

As one of the best Farmers markets in the US this holds up to it's reputation. Fun, good food to eat there as well as great fresh food vendors to buy from. We try to go as much as we can when the season hits. Great people watching as well.

By Caleb J |

Love me some fruits and vegetables. This market has a great selection of that as well as plenty of other things. I'm glad I made the stop here.

By debradoodle2015 |

Nice to stroll through farmers market and they're starting to get some gluten free foods but the dogs are taking over.

By Diane A |

This is more than a farmers market, it's really a weekly festival that takes place in the trendy Court Avenue district in downtown Des Moines. Sure, it features the requisite local produce, meets, bakery, cheese, wine, honey, soaps, etc. But you will also find outstanding street food, garden art, crafts, clothing, and fresh flowers and plants. The festival vibe is supported by musicians and other rotating entertainers such as balloon artists and belly dancers located at various points along the way. This is usually a crowded venue frequented by locals who show up (with baby strollers and dogs in tow) to shop, eat, and enjoy the social scene. If you just need some seasonal vegetables and some fresh eggs, you might prefer a smaller farmers market during the week; the Downtown Farmers market is all about people-watching, food-tasting, and street entertainers.

By Dan D |

Court Avenue - Downtown Des Moines. May through October - 7 am to noon.

I've read in some of the local literature (the freebie mags that you find at hotels etc.) that this is one of the biggest in the country. Probably is.

I don't recall paying for parking in a couple of the big parking ramps, but I can't honestly say. Plenty of parking though none the less.

Lots of fresh fruits & veggies. Lots of delicious goodies. Crafts for sale. Buskers. DOG FRIENDLY!

I my wife always hits the cart with the Bosnian food - usually for a cabbage roll. Big Daddy's Barbeque usually has a stand selling their sauce. A couple times a summer, I get whatever their seasonal version of their sauce is. Dennison Mustard Co. has a stand. Twice a summer I'll get a bunch of that. There's a company that sells many varieties of kraut and kimchi - oddball flavors as well as traditional - Southwestern themed, etc.

It really is an extremely popular thing to do. If you don't like crowds (or dogs), maybe skip it. Otherwise, it's at the very least a great way to stretch your legs and enjoy the weather.

By HonestTee2 |

We have been to the Farmers Market a few times. It is very nice, well organized and full of unique items. My biggest complaint is that people bring their dogs. The dogs are HOT and need a drink. I'm afraid of stepping on one or tripping. Dogs should be taken to the park where they can run. not collared to a leash in a tight downtown market.

By Lori K |

Every time we travel we try to search out a farmer's market and have never found one that compares to Des Moines!

By carguy58 |

We always try to allow time to visit when we are in town. Very big with a lot going on. I always have to get a pupusa (from El salvadore) for breakfast. They always have a great selection of food and crafts.

By LittlePaint |

I love the outdoor Saturday market... Such a variety from prepared foods to fresh meat & veggies to handmade goods like jewelry...and live music. People watching is a fun activity, so is eating from one end of the market to the other. And chatting with the vendors is always interesting...especially on those Saturdays when it's not crowded (yes, that does happen!).

But don't forget the indoor Winter Market... November 17-18 and December 15-16 at Capital Square and Kaleidoscope from 9am-1pm. Lots of food, produce, entertainment, and holiday gifts.

By Peter I |

Be prepared to do the market in two weekends. There's no way to do it in one of you want the full experience. If you want to sample wine at 9am on a Saturday, this is the place to be.

By Iamnotmymind |

What a treat! This is the best farmer's market in Iowa. You can't go wrong with the food samples, music, people watching and various purchase options including organic/local produce.

By Nicole B |

Fun set up with crafts, food and fresh vegetables and baked goods to purchase. We bought smoothies, breakfast pizza, coffee, fresh made donuts and some cupcakes. It takes up a couple streets downtown. You can bring your dogs as well. Very enjoyable and lots of people enjoying the goods. Parking is free in one of the parking garages. Get there early as it does get very crowded and parking fills up. Fun for a couple hours of relaxed walking and eating.

By Nancy F |

We live in our motorhome and travel all over the US. This is one of the best farmer's markets we have visited. Of course, we used to live in Des Moines and might be a bit partial. But this has everything and is quite large. It has arts and crafts, it has music, it has kids entertainment, it has Amish baked goods, it has breakfast, it has clothing but what it specializes in is produce and is there ever a variety of produce. If you have never tried something, here is your chance. They sell every type of produce here. We can get our produce for the week here along with our baked goods. Oh, yeah, there's the people watching too. So much fun and entertainment along with the amazing produce. We'll be there.

By rcurry17 |

Lots of farm food, hot food to go, fresh flowers and entertainment on every corner--this is the way to spend a Saturday morning in Des Moines. There were literally blocks of vendors for clothing, soap, homemade jellies, sausages--really, you name it and it was there.

By Dawn S |

I travel with a 12 yr old, a 6 yr old and a 69 yr old... we all enjoy the farmers market. We have a favorite egg roll place, breakfast pizza place, and cheese place. If we are luck gooners is there the weekend we travel to Des Moines from central IL.
Walk the large farmers market and sample wines, cheeses, baked goods, sweets, jerkys and more on the street as you enjoy booths if artists and fresh produce. If you have time check out the new HyVee grocery store. Wow!

By fitness enthusiast and chemist |

The Des Moines Farmer's Market is larger than anyone would imagine. It spans up and down the side roads for nine blocks! You can easily spend a couple of hours, if you want to look at all of the vendors.
The selection of produce is vast, as expected, but there is also a variety of homemade breads and pastries, and a few places to get a morning latte. Other highlights are raw smoothies, homemade rootbeer, delicious "to order" omlets, Dutch letters, and specialty jams, mustard flavors, and wine tasting.
Non-food items include anything from clothing to jewelry (beautiful glass earrings and necklaces) to unique cutting boards and lawn ornaments made of metal and rocks. You can also buy potted plants and flowers and, also, fresh cut flowers for someone special. There are usually 2-3 local musical guests, as well, so that you can always hear music as you walk from vendor to vendor.
Definitely plan for at least 2 hours the first time you go. This market is so impressive that it is my husband's and my "go to" attraction to bring guests to.

By Purnima09 |

The market offers diverse products including locally grown produce, seasonal flowers farm fresh products, fresh baked food items, live music and entertainment.Good atmosphere.

By L L |

Grab a breakfast burrito and an iced coffee and enjoy meandering up and down the venue. Get their early though to avoid the food lines.

By Don S |

Has fresh produce some art and a number of musicians every Saturday in the Spring Summer and the fall. It is a great place to meet friends and people watch. Every week you can find something different.

By Sara R |

This Farmers Market is the best I have ever seen!!! At least 10 blocks lined on both sides with flowers, veggies, fresh. Asked goods, jewelry, yard art, crafts, and even massages. Very crowded, so go early if you can. Totally enjoyable!

The Des Moine Downtown Farmers Market is one of those things you have to see to believe. My wife and I love farmers markets and visit them when-ever we can. This one is huge, yet very well organized and just plain fun. There are a wide variety of booths, fresh farm produce, tasty food, beautiful crafts, and great beverages. Don't miss this if you get the chance to go, you won't be sorry.
