A Surprise Destination in the middle of Wine Country

By Bicki153 |

A great way to start the day before the wineries open. The docent/volunteers are friendly and helpful. They are clearly committed to this museum which was started about 25 years ago by two people. Amazing what they have accomplished. There is a nice array of planes and an automobile collection as well as an indoor museum. Definitely worth a trip.

Gem of a Museum

By scpenry |

We had a great time visiting the Warbirds Museum. Our plane/military/car obsessed preschooler bonded with docent Dave Highland and Mr. Highland took lots of time to talk to him and answer ALL of his questions. The museum has the best collection of military vehicles (land & air) the I've seen. The attached Woodland Car Collection is also a treat. Take the time to visit. Make sure to check open days.

Better than expected

By G4gene |

As air museums go, it's about a 5 out of 10, but I enjoyed it and if you're in the area, its a nice diversion from wine tasting, etc. By warbirds, they mean mostly 60's and more recent. About a dozen old jets on display.

There is also a car museum attached, which I would rate even better than the air museum.

We went for an hour and stayed three.

Great Museum and Event Venue

By Pasogurl O |

I've been to many events at the Warbird Museum. Every year they do an airshow in October, it's a great local event and it's fun to see the old planes. When the weather is nice, it is a great place to attend events. I went to a dinner/ auction in October that was really fun and the view of the planes is beautiful.

Pleasant surprise

By Brigitte C |

Exhibits were very well done and very interesting. Definitely worthwhile to stop for a visit. Highly recommend to supplement wine tasting!

MILITARY MUSEUM

By QUESTIONSGALORE |

We happened upon this interesting museum while staying at a nearby hotel. Being a military family, my husband enjoyed showing our daughter & husband so much of the military equipment and ancillary exhibits from his long career. There's a great hall full of racing and classic vehicles, while outside offers a wide selection of larger military equipment and aircraft. Also a nice gift shop to purchase souvenirs and many books covering a wide range of military events plus local history. Both the gift shop clerk and docents shared many interesting stories and even took photos with us.

Air and car museum tucked between vineyards!

By EvyLee |

Need a break from wine tasting? Want to show your kids (and yourself!) some cool old planes and cars? Head to the Estella Warbird Museum. It's a short trip from downtown Paso Robles--maybe 15 minutes off the 101--and well worth the trip. The museum is divided into sections for planes and war memorabilia, and antique vehicles. The collections are well displayed, and there are a number of knowledgeable and friendly volunteers around, eager to answer questions. Some planes are outside,so if it's a hot day, be prepared. We spent about two hours there but if you are really a fan, allow yourself more time. There is a lot to see!

Well done place

By JimmyJackk |

Lots of great displays from various services and conflicts. Lots of aircraft and vehicles. Also an extensive auto section as well.

A Veterans Day visit

By Dave B |

Great collection of Warbirds and Great Automobiles in one place. Two brothers with similar interests really enjoyed the freedom of being able to touch these familiar Aircraft.
The road leading to the museum is a little rough but well worth the bumps. Gift shop prices were a bit high in comparison to other museums.

ESTRELLA WARBIRD AIR MUSEUM

Awesome museum

By dwata |

This museum is beyond what you would expect for one of it type and size. The extensive number of aircraft, military vehicles, military munitions, race cars, classic cars, and military history displays is incredible. A must see for adults and children!
Great work by all the museum personnel and volunteers!

A hidden gem in Paso

By Joan J |

We have spent many weekends in Paso Robles and had never visited this unique museum. I only wished we had had more time as we arrived an hour and 15 minutes prior to closing. The museum of artifacts from WW I through the Vietnam War was fascinating. However, the most fascinating part of the museum was outside where the old planes and helicopters were there to admire and some to even enter (ex. an Vietnam era helicopter). They also house a large antique car show which, unfortunately, we had to rush through. We also discovered that for $20, it is possible to spend 1/2 hour in the flight simulator. We will have to return!

Wonderful museum!!

By Bobby31225 |

Was visiting Morro Bay for 4 nights and drove up to see this museum in Paso Robles. Really glad I did!! What a wonderful museum!! I spent about 4 hours there looking at everything. The planes were neat and the car museum building was really nice!! Cars are immaculate!! $10.00 to get in for seniors and $12.00 if your not. Well worth it!! Times: Thursday- Sunday 10 am to 4 pm. I would highly recommend seeing this at the Paso Robles airport.

Great collection from the past

By Tourtheworld32 |

I have been to several museums such as this around the world and this is truly one of the best. It has a very large collection of historical documentation, transportation vehicles, war memorabilia, etc. in a very compact space and yet if feels like it goes on forever. I would definitely take the time away from wine tasting in the area to visit this great find. Seniors do get a discount and it's worth every penny even if you don't.

Interesting

By tucsonk8 |

Married to an Air Force veteran, I've visited many air museums. This small museum is excellent, with items I've never seen anywhere else. Loved the old race cars, and fun to see early pix of NASCAR superstar Jeff Gordon. Recommend

Super interesting surprise

By Wilma45 |

Lots of historic aircraft and artifacts. If you're at all an airplane buff, take advantage of this gem. Cold war planes and even a Titan missile. Great for kids to get up close.

Excellent Display

By OldBigBob |

This museum is small when compared to other air museums, like the San Diego Air & Space Museum and their incomparable collection, but it is quite nice. Very interesting displays Well worth the short drive to see both historic aircraft and automobiles.

Great Museum in the Middle of Wine Country

By Cari F |

There is so much to see here. From WW1, WW2 the Korean war and Vietnam. From articles to read guns to see. Ammo to see. Outside there is also many planes used in some of these wars to see. There are tanks and other vehicles. In one building they have a great collection of beautiful cars. Lots of different things to take you back in time. Very interesting to see. You are able to take pictures of everything. I would recommend a visit.

Spent the day here....

By slosammie |

We arrived at 9:45 awaiting their 10:00 A.M. opening. Our first visit was booked through the Lifelong Learners of the Central Coast...taking advantage of their group tour offering. There were 18 of us, we were split into groups with a docent for each. Our docent was Pete and we signed up for a ride in the simulator where we piloted a plane at the end of our tour. What a fun day!!! We plan to go back. There are areas we didn't see and others where we want to spend more time. This is a worthwhile walk back in aviation history, we viewed planes used in the Korean an Viet Nam war eras, there were tanks and ground vehicles used in WWII (including Pattons Army). The bonus was the car collection...there are several rooms of pristine vehicles from the early part of the century forward...then there are racing cars connected with famous racing drivers...this alone is worth the trip.
The museum is well run, beautifully maintained and the docents are well versed in their craft. A thoroughly delightful day we will repeat ...it is a not to be missed venue.

Really positive surprice

By Jukka M |

There was older gentleman who told many things about this museum and planes. We also had a change to talk about WW2 histroy with him. Indoor exhibition has lots of model aircrafts, weapons, uniforms, etc. Big planes are of course outside. There are many legendary aircrafts, such as F-14 "Tomcat", Bell UH-1 "Huey", etc. Addition to planes there are few ground vehicles and cannons. Few planes are also under restoration so assumably the exhibition will grow.
Beside Warbird Air Museum there is also Woodland Auto Display that has many vintage, military and racing vehicles. In the same building there is also old radios, military ammunition and missiles.

Awesome

By Kittieca |

Seeing these planes make me feel very appreciative for what our veterans endured..
If in the area, so see!

Old Guys checking Out Old Planes

By Don H |

The museum has some awesome memorabilia from all branches of the military and wars. The staff is very knowledgeable and brought a level of realism to what we saw. It is definitely worth a detour or intentional trip to Paso to see Warbirds.

Cool for a short day visit

By Momof4crazykids2014 |

There were quite a few planes and old cars, military and war stuff. Pretty cool for a half day outing. Our children ages 12, 10, 5 and 3 all enjoyed it

Comprehensive collection!

By Baywalk827 |

Fascinating place! Worth your visit! Detailed collections of various war aircraft, tanks, guns, and huge amounts of other US military WW1, WW2, Korean, Vietnam, Gulf and likely more. I happened to visit with a plane fan who raved about the many real and model aircraft on display.
A HUGE bonus was the excellent adjacent car museum. Kudos to the curators and collectors!

Hidden Gem!

By Cynthia P |

The museum has a large selection of old military planes and vehicles in addition to a large selection of classic cars and other vehicles. There is also a nice display of artifacts from multiple wars. The admission is perhaps a bit pricey for what is there but still well worth the visit. The museum is supported by the admission.

Incredible, Amazing, Awesome

By its_Marci |

Fantastic staff that guides you through a hidden gem in Paso Robles. Forget the wine when in Paso, search out this museum for an afternoon of amazement viewing military history, aviation history, and vehicle history. Don't miss seeing the auto museum on the tour - incredible exhibit. You can even sit in the old planes and get a true "pilots view" from the cockpit; they eve have a Saturn Rocket engine you can see and touch.

Lots to see

By Sindi M |

We had a great visit on a special event day. Lots of planes and aircraft. You can find food at the hanger, see lots of memorabilia, history at this smaller museum. We recommend you plan a day for your visit.

Fantastic Display of historical aircraft and cars

By Tenorvossa |

Very knowledgeable staff - and great to see many of these rare items up close. Great grounds. Hope new generations take advantage to see this and preserve a piece of our military history as well as classic cars.

Tired of drinking wine and eating? Go see the planes and cars and then go back to drinking and eating...

By SusanLaughs |

Somehow, I am on an air museum roll. Went to see Castle Air Museum earlier in the week and now this little hidden gem in the midst of wine country. Worth every bit of the 10 bucks it takes to get you in. Nice collection of a variety of planes with an info plaque in front of each plane. I also liked the attached military museum that gives you the opportunity to view grenades, radios and artillery up close. The big surprise was the depth of the car collection. I loved the REO Speed Wagon (the rv not the band) and the jalopy that really was part of the Southern California car culture in the 1950's. Look for the letter Clyde Barrow wrote to Henry ford. In this museum I liked the cars more than the planes. As usual with these places, the docents are knowledgeable , friendly and have forgotten more about planes and cars than you and I will ever know.

A must see at least once!

By pinkkid |

If you are a local and have not yet been here to the Estrella Warbird Air Museum, shame on you! Especially come during the Wings, Warbirds & Wheelies event every May when everything is open, and free!! Such a neat cool place with awesome historic cars, planes, war stuff, vintage stuff, nascar & racing stuff... the list goes on! Spring Break is also a great time to check it out with the kids & family. Minimal fee is charged during normal hours but so worth it and all the money is put right back into the museum and it's events and adding more memorabilia! I look forward coming here each year in May with family & friends!

A museum worth visiting!

By Lynette51 |

Not sure how big or what this museum had on display, when we arrived the docent told us to expect to spend at least 2 hours here. She was not kidding. There is a lot to see and it just keeps going on and on. You start off in the Vietnam era museum with all the artifacts, then head outside where there are numerous jets, tanks, etc from all branches of the armed services. There is a separate area where a number of volunteers donate their time restoring planes, helicopters, etc. They are there to answer any questions you may have. There is a building that houses numerous old restored vehicles which are beautiful. This is definitely a must see when in Paso Robles. Numerous docents throughout that are very knowledgeable. Lots of parking and great for families as well as anyone interested in military memorabilia.

totally neat place

By Evilshig |

This is a great off the beaten path place. If you like old war planes, and other military artifacts then this is a must see.

Install Barker engine for display.

By Laurence V D |

The best auto and Aero museum in the western United States. Has a large collection of airplanes outside and a great little museum inside with history of aviation. Auto has one of the best and most interesting collections of cars and related automotive engines and parts. Many famous race cars and American classic cars.

Worth a stop if you like cars or planes.

By wubbuwu |

Wow there is a lot to see here. Husband went for the planes, I went for the cars. But he was in heaven seeing the ‘55 Mercedes 300SL gullwing.

The staff are wonderfully knowledgeable and friendly. But they won’t engage if you don’t want them too.

Sorry it took us so long to get here.

If you're a history buff and want to know more about the battles

By vinojeff |

You can easily spend a couple of very interesting hours in Paso Robles at this nonprofit museum for only $10 per person. Not only the written and photo history of US involvement in wars of the 20th century, but a filght simulator you can use, a large collection of war planes, and a terrific collection of well-maintained cars, cycles, etc. Worth the time after you've been to the wineries.

Neat place to take kids

By troydawson369 |

Took my 5 year-old. He wasn't mature enough to appreciate all that was there. However, he did like the jet fighter simulator.

Wow, what a pleasant surprise.

By bigroman |

I seldom offer a review unless it's an extremely bad experience or an extremely good experience. This was a great. I would have never believed that such a complete array of warplanes, military vehicles, weapons, and as a bonus beautifully restored automobiles and race cars would be on display at one location. The people that run the museum are friendly and helpful. The place is spotless. We never expected this type of world class museum in a small friendly town like Paso Robles. Can't wait to bring our friends to visit the museum. Thank You.

Amazing!

By David S |

Never realized how many aircraft the military have used in the past. Really shocking. And next door is a very extensive collection of classic cars and other motorized toys

history buffs heaven

By vwhusband |

many old wwII era aircrafts and vehicles the cars and motorcycles are amazing too. they often have events at the airport so that is the best time to go,

A trip back into Aviation History

By 2flyers_13 |

Very well organized selection of memorabilia with different wars.
Well thought out glass cases of mementos, authentic uniforms,
weapons, letters, photos, etc. Outside good display of older airplanes. We ran out of time, but plan return soon to see auto display.

A great find!

By Christyinca |

So happy our hotel in SLO had brochures on the Estrella Warbird Air Museum when we stayed there the other day. We had no plans for our drive back home on Sunday and decided to stop by for a visit. What a great collection of military, plane and car history they have there! The volunteers there are very friendly and knowledgeable and there was so much to see. Was definitely worth the stop and we plan to come by with the kids sometime soon too.

A memorable day

By Cheryl B |

This is a museum that everyone will enjoy. Walking around the planes and armoured vehicles outside was fascinating . The inside museum walks you through our war history with videos, pictures, old newspaper articles and much more.
The auto display was excellent. In addition to great examples showing the history of the development of the automobile they also have an extensive display of racing cars. I loved the sprint cars which I had never heard of.
This Estrella museum is manned by volunteers who have a passion for preserving our military aircraft and vehicles and our war history for WW1, WW2 and the Korean War
The Woodland Auto display is manned with volunteers who are eager to answer any questions and their passion for cars is infectious

Fun for all!

By Rachel L |

MY son whos 11 really enjoyed being able to get inside tanks and planes. My husband really enjoyed all the classic cars. I loved all the World War II displays. Great price for admission just check the hours not open all week.

What a gem in Paso Robles

By jlp651 |

I am impressed with the incredible collection of military history that has been assembled. a small museum that has a lot to offer. Very interesting displays of planes, military vehicles and a great car collection from Dick Woodland from collectibles to race cars. The breadth of the collection is astounding and for a small place in the country. If you have interest in military historical items, this place is for you.

Bigger than it looks!

By Halle H |

Perfect covid spacing! They have done a great job! Docents and guides are helpful and friendly! Plan a couple of hours, plenty to see!

History For Families

By Dan Payne |

My wife and I and our 2 kids had a great learning experience here.
Plenty to see for 1 to 2 hours. Opportunities for kids to get in and on some historical capital equipment. Friendly and knowledgeable volunteers. Also a great car museum.

Not a history buff but enjoyed anyway!

By Morag C |

Lots of interesting planes and vehicles. Great history and information with each exhibit. Many different war periods.

Fun find for car buffs and all things airplane/war related

By Diane D |

After noticing a sign next to our RV park, we decided to take a look. My husband worked 25 years at LAX so airplanes were a major part of his past. His father was a car racer so we enjoy recalling some of his history. The airplanes are mainly in an area with a well paved pathway that meanders among the many hands on displays. Because of the heat, we toured the outside first and then took a look at the cars. Even for someone who is not "into" cars, the walk down memory lane was fun and all the museum volunteers were very friendly and helpful. The last section was the war memorabilia room which was displayed with great care. We ended up buying a few things in the gift shop as a memory of a fun stop. $10 each to enter.

Amazing car collection and Military collection of vehicles, etc.

By LoveBigBear411 |

We had a lovely morning exploring through the museum. The volunteers are extremely knowledgeable and very helpful. Enjoyed the visit and well worth a trip.

Great way to spend a day

By Jocko H |

This is a hidden gem, if you like military planes and vehicles as well as antiue cars and race cars, this is your place. The wife and I spent over 4 hours wandering around this place. Everything is right there, up close and very impressive. Most of the planes are cold war era jet fighters including the F14 Tomcat (Top Gun), but there are also some helicopters and prop planes on display. Military vehicles, military artifacts, Naval ship models, and a very impressive car collection with a lot of one of a kind antique specimines. My wifes favorite was an REO Speedwagon motorhome. Some of the cars are owned by the Warbird Musium, some are on loan and the bulk of the car collection belongs to Nick woodward & family. Lots of Stock car and sprint car history here as well.

Great/Interesting Museum!!

By Jerry C |

This museum is a gem. The docents are very helpful and knowledgable. You can plan on a few hours looking at planes, war stuff, and an excellent car museum. You can also fly an F-18 Jet in the museum's simulator. Cost is good at about $10 per adult. Plenty of nearby wine places also. Great downtown to visit also in Paso robles.

Intimate Museum Experience

By mark8man2015 |

The Estrella Warbird museum offers lots of intimate experiences for visitors, from the military aircraft to the library. One can get up close to several planes and military vehicles that have been restored or in process. The library staff is very helpful, check-out the WWI (1918) newspaper catalogue on display. It's one of three in the US (the other two are in the Smithsonian). The private car collection is very cool to visit (classics, race cars (NASCAR/Formula 1/Offroad). It's great for all ages and very reasonably priced.

History on review

By john e |

Great old warbirds on display, memorabilla from wwii to present. Military vehicles along with restored autos and race cars.

An underrated attraction !

By Kay R |

This museum is much more than one might expect. Not only is the large exhibition of wartime aviation excellent, but the auto collection is terrific. You could easily spend a few hours here. We learned a great deal in a calm, comfortable setting. Highly recommended.

Don't go in the summer...Infested with wasps!

By Robinelechat |

Sadly we couldn't really enjoy most of the exhibit because everything outdoor was infested with wasps. I've never seen so many wasps in one place. We couldn't stop and look at a plane for fear that one of the many wasps around it would attack. The lady who work there said she thinks wasps that build nests and some of the planes. I would say in every one of them!
Simply horrible! And stressful!
The indoor car museum was cool and it did not have wasps inside. But trying to walk out any of the doors, wasps everywhere!

Decent planes, great car collection

By Zonker |

Warbirds is well worth the stop. It's about $10 to get in. They have a decent collection of vintage military aircraft though most are in poor condition. Inside the building is a nice collection of ordinance. By far the best part of this attraction is Dick Woodland's car collection. Must be close to 100 vintage cars in excellent condition. Good docents to explain everything.

The Estrella Warbirds and Car Museum are Worth a Trip

By Jeffrey M |

Paso is known for its wine scene. Add one more item to the list of reasons to visit...the Estrella Warbirds and Car Museum is a phenomenal gem on the Central Coast. Lots of great exhibits to explore and a docent crew that is extremely knowledgeable make it a fun experience regardless of your age.

Air Museum with Artillery and Old cars

By Orchard Orchid |

Loved this Museum. It was organized, clean and the staff were so friendly and knowledgeable. The old aircraft could use some tlc, but it was so nice to be able to take a step back in time.

Larger Collection of Old Planes

By ken d |

We were quite impressed with the quantity of older war planes Also a collection of older and not so old cars and military vehicles . A special treat was a Lowheed Flighing Fortress that was at the nearby airport. Rather causal setup , wewwre /3 of the way through the buildings when the check in person caught up withus and had us go back to pay the miminal entrance fee. He also had to unlock a few doors since they were locked and it was near closing tme

A hidden oasis!

By Lieselbee |

We found a leaflet for this attraction and were very pleasantly surprised when we arrived to find so many aircraft, rare vintage cars and WW2 memorabilia. Truely amazing! Very well presented. Pristine buildings, excellent displays, immaculate toilets, and very helpful staff. There was a range of fighter jets, tanks, weapons, armoured vehicles through to rare vintage cars (including racing cars). An absolute must see for history buffs and car fanatics! My 2 boys and husband were in awe of the wonderful things to see and many photographic opportunities. An air worthy Dakota is quite a sight to behold. A shame we are not here when there are shows....imagine that is definitely worth a visit!

Nice Museum

By bloren3433 |

If you like old planes you will like this museum. Community support and volunteers work hard to keep this place alive. History in front of your eyes!

Of Historical value

By PETER S |

This is a most wonderful place to visit on a 13 acre facility. From a rare collection of vintage Korean and Vietnam era fighter aircraft, working military vehicles of WW1 and 11, including some of the actual RED BALL EXPRESS vehicles of General George Patton, weapons collections, and a classic and race car museum that's not to be missed. It is a hidden treasure in Paso that's definitely NOT TO BE MISSED. Great stuff for kids and adults for sure.

Great Collection

By _dt_arch |

For anyone interested in military aircraft, vehicles and history this is a fascinating place to spend an afternoon. The displays are well curated and the docents are friendly and knowledgable. There is also a sizable automobile collection which includes vintage autos, race cars and related memorabila.

Best Experience & Price In Town!

By Christopher L |

While traveling down the highway my son and I saw a sign for the museum and decided to check it out and boy oh boy we were not disappointed. For only $10 each we got to experience not only an air museum (US and other countries) but military vehicles and an auto museum that was one of the best that I've visited.

What I also like was being able to not only get inside the aircraft and military vehicles but sit inside and picture yourself flying or driving them. Also included was a section showing drones and shells used by infantry, aircraft but ships as well.

The auto museum was another wonderful presentation of not only classic vehicles but all sorts of race cars as well. What I really enjoyed was the Rio bus that was bound for the scrap heap and turned into a camper for a local winery.

cars and planes

By James E |

Very nice collection of Cold War era aircraft, plus a variety of vintage automobiles and military vehicles. Reasonable admission fee, friendly & helpful staff, plus extensive indoor displays.

Ok but not great

By Amy A |

Interesting planes and memorabilia from the past wars.
There are also old cars. Nice tour but short.

Amazing

By Debi Y |

What an incredible museum this is. So much to see and well displayed. Much larger than we anticipated for the area. A true must see if ever in this area.

Found during a Motorcycle Ride

By giff64 |

We found this place during a MC ride with friends. It was amazing to see all the history tucked away in this out of the way spot. They had a large assortment of War period collection from uniforms, gear, educational information and planes. They also had a really nice Antique car collection. If you like history, planes and cars this is a must see spot.

We will be back

By Erika W |

Surprised my husband to a day at the museum and we were welcomed with amazing volunteers with so much knowledge. The walk on your own tour was well put together. They have a flight simulator that you can ride in for an additional fee, which is worth it! My husband is a Marine Corp Vet and was welcomed free of charge and we spent a good 3-4 hours here! Left with full of knowledge on our countries history. We will be back!

Hidden gem of Paso

By ral513 |

Unexpected find in the middle of wine country! This place has a great display of war planes and memorabilia, plus fantastic car museum -classics, sprint cars, etc. Loved it!

The best air museum!

By voltagefam |

We took the family to this museum and really enjoyed the collection they had. There were so many photographs and memorabilia inside. There were also so many planes outside to discover and we all enjoyed the car collection inside! The facilities were clean and the staff was friendly.

Car yes,planes no

By Darel M |

If your coming here to see planes you will probably be disappointed. However if you like hot rods race cars of different type then you will enjoy it here.

It's a gem!

By Scott C |

I was amazed at how well done the museum and it's displays were. The number of displays including old aircraft and cars was incredible for something not as well known. If you go, I'm sure you'll be surprised at the value!

set up with pride

By DianaW44_13 |

Volunteers are very proud and eager to share information about the planes and the history of the men who flew them

Warbirds on display

By Mike M |

Small museum but worth visiting. Lot of military memorabilia, plans, ground vehicles and weapons. Also have the Woodland vehicle display of antique cars and a lot of race cars.

Very much enjoyed our visit.

Husbands loved it...wives had free time for J Lohr and Eberle Wineries.

By winediva59 |

Liked the fact that it gave hubby something to do for 3 hours. He said it had a great collection and a friendly docent!

Like planes? Like history? Like old cars?

By SledMan |

This is a must see if you are in the area. Go out to the airport, turn Right on Old Creek Road before you get to the air terminal. Admission is cheap, and you can easily spend a few hours checking out all of the cool planes, cars, and history displays. A couple of times a year they have large events (Warbirds over Paso) and the place gets packed.

By Karen W |

This museum is well worth the time. The breath of military items and antique cars on display is amazing. You need lots of time to get the full measure of the experience. We'll go back next time we're in the area.

War, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing, but visit if your are in town...

By ataraxis |

We visited the Warbird Museum with my 90yr old Grandpa (who fought in WWII) and his wife who is 100% German. To visit a place like this and hear some of their stories really makes it feel like you have had it easy all of your life. I can't imagine going through any of that.

There is a lot to see here and there is also a car museum on the property. I don't think they have much of a budget so any support you can give them is welcomed. I especially liked the restored army vehicles indoors. The dripping grease and oil told me these beasts are still alive.

I rate Estrella Warbird Air Museum 4 "circles". I took one away for not having much in the way of interactive exhibits.

Why doesn't TripAdvisor have a visit type of "Family (adults)"? Its infuriating so for most of my reviews, including this one, I am selecting "Friends". Please keep in mind that is code for "Family (Adults)". Again, "Friends" = "Family (Adults)", thank you.

Hidden Gem!

By urban_girlie |

This place was an awesome find for anyone who enjoys American war history or classic cars! There is an extensive, well thought out indoor display of all kinds of memorabilia. The jeep collection was especially impressive! The old planes & helicopters were fun to walk around and some you could even climb into! I thoroughly enjoyed the few hours spent walking around and taking in the various collections. A must see if you are in Paso Robles! Knowledgeable and very friendly staff love to chat and answer all of your questions. Two thumbs up for Estrella Warbird Air Museum!

Fantastic Museum - make a weekend of it.

By YardSaleLdy |

This is such a BIG SURPRISE museum wise!!! My guy & I went to see one thing @ this museum & could not believe how fantastic is was!!!! Over the top--- First rate military vehicles & war-birds - many in the outside yard. There are uniforms , ammo displays. The people who volunteer are great & the other museum goers were alot of fun! It took us 4 hours to drive there & we plan to go again!!!!

Interesting place to visit!

By Amie K |

We came here based on other reviews. If you are interested in vehicles of any sort - fighter jets, automobiles, army transport vehicles - then this is the place for you. Outside you can see a variety of jets used by the military. Then there is a huge automobile collection with a variety of beautiful and interesting cars. Also, they recently opened an exhibit with vehicles from the Red Ball Express Motor Pool which are also very interesting to learn about. In addition, there are docents available for questions and they are eager to share what they know. Great place to visit!

Gr8 museum!

By travelingCAgal |

Came here with a group of cousins. First of all, I love WWII history. The museum is comprised of several hangars/buildings with various military vehicles and equipment. I enjoyed the WWII history and looking at the older planes. They also had a nice collection of vintage (non military) vehicles.

The past of our fathers

By JoAnn H |

Take a Break from Drinking Wine

By Jake J |

Excellent collection of WWII aircraft and military transportation in all states of repair. Really enjoyed the car collection as well, although heavily geared to racing. A good break from wineries!

local military museum

By Cathy M |

Step into the past as you look at many planes, helicopters & military vehicles. Enjoy talking to the volunteers, many who have 1st person accounts of their military service & use of the vehicles.

Lots of military

The museum has a very large collection of Military items, Aircraft, vehicles, memorabilia and Collector Cars.

History and education and cars and planes

By DrMHS |

This is a destination for car buffs and anyone interested in airplanes. It is an educational opportunity with amazing airplanes and docents who love what they're doing. Do not miss this. There is also a simulator for armchair pilots and real pilots updating rusty skills.

Excellent day out

By PNEMad |

We visited here expecting the planes and helicopters but we weren’t expecting the cars!!! The gullwing Mercedes worth 3-5 million dollars....Steve McQueens Indian bike and sidecar!! The f15 flight simulator as well was the icing on the cake

Love this museum

By Harvey W |

Not a huge place but for us that was good, we can't walk too far. Very detailed displays of military planes, vehicles and more. They even have a classic car museum. The entire place was put together by volunteers and funded by donations. A real tribute to present and past military, but primarily WWII, Korea and Vietnam era. If you want to really study all the displays and details you could spend hours here. Everything is staged and presented very well and easy to navigate. Even if you're only a car buff, you must see the Woodland Auto Display. Some cars there you won't see at normal car shows. There are concrete sidewalks outside to navigate between the buildings, planes and vehicles. Sitting tables are strategically placed to find rest in the shade. Planes and vehicles are accessible for viewing the inside of some of them. Nice gift shop, very friendly staff. It's a bit off the beaten path but worth the drive. Entry is $10 each.

This is an interesting place

This is an interesting place with interesting historical airplanes, jeeps, etc. It also has some classic cars and other historical items. I would have to say that if you like WW2 memorabilia, you will find it worthwhile to visit!

Wonderful Musuem or War Memorabilia and Great Auto Musuem.

By lovetotravel92630 |

This Museum is like two for the price of one. There are several buildings of war memorabilia and war related vehicles. Then there is an out door area of a wide variety of planes, prop and jets. In a separate buildings is one of the more fascinating private auto collections you will experience. It is over the top and requires some time to read about each of the autos. For a local museum this is a 5 star experience. I suggest going through one section such as the War memorabilia, in its entirety, then go through the autos.

Definitely come visit

By OHCatLady |

You'll find war planes, weaponry, tanks, personal memorabilia, cars (antique and muscle), all sorts of neat stuff. We spent two hours looking around, but didn't come close to seeing and appreciating it all. Make sure to chat with the docents. They put a human face on the realities of warfare. And have some really funny stories.

Wonderful Trip Back in History

By nippon703 |

The Estrella Warbird Air Museum is wonderful especially for those of you interested in military history. In addition to many warbirds, there is a building full of military vehicles and another with uniforms, firearms etc. We fully enjoyed our time there. The facilities are meticulous and the price of admission was very reasonable $8.00 for a senior pass. Included in this past was a huge warehouse full of antique cars of all types and antique race cars. We enjoyed them as well. Encourage anyone interested in planes, WWI and WWII to visit the Warbird Air museum.

What a collection at Estrella Warbird Air Museum

By LincolnOsiris |

Estrella Warbird Air Museum has an absolutely amazing collection of military planes, photos, uniforms, vehicles, firearms, artillery and even a classic car wing. We did not expect the number and size of items on display. For military and/or history buffs, this is a must see.

Weekday Visit to Estrella Air /Car Museum

Off the beaten path - enjoyed our visit overall

So Many Interesting Artifacts!

By themandylove |

First of all, I do not recommend going on a very hot day just because when you inevitably go outside to check out the planes and vehicles on display in the gravel--you won't want to spend as much time checking them all out as you would if it wasn't so hot outside. Nevertheless, they are all SO AWESOME! And the majority of them you can climb/look inside, which just offers a whole new perspective.

Upon your arrival, you might be thinking that there isn't going to be much to see, but looks are deceiving and there really is quite a bit. If you truly enjoy history (and don't have any younger ones with you who want to get done with this outing as quickly as possible), then I highly suggest really taking your time to look at and read some/most of the artifacts on display in the main room. There is also a munitions exhibit in one of the warehouses, which is a real treat. And, of course, you MUST check out the Woodland Automotive Display. Even if you're not an automotive buff, but at least a history buff, there are so many amazing restored vehicles there. My favorites are the 1929 REO Speed Wagon Camper (now known as a motor home) and the 1930 Packard Model 733. They also have a lot for racing fans such as the evolution of racing seats and some actual race cars.

When we were there at the end of July, they were working on some restoration for another exhibit opening in the future, so it will be really interesting to see what they're going to add. Overall, I think this museum was a pleasant surprise and if you happen to be in the Paso Robles area or not too far away, you should definitely spend a few hours here and check it out.

Plane Lovin' It

By Denise K |

If you have someone military in your family, this will bring back some great memories. Unlike most museums, these planes are loaded - many still have their tailhooks, armaments and even the fuel line for inflight refueling. Lots of planes from the different services, but also some interesting vehicles and a full line of missiles and weapons. Loads of history in one of the buildings - uniforms, stories and more. If you are rated, you can fly some of the historic planes. And if not, or simply want to try something crazy, you can sign up to fly a very complex simulator and even land on an aircraft carrier (or not. Not everyone can do it). Spend at least a few hours here. It's worth it and wonderful.

Amazing collection of wartime memorabilia

By Margie W |

This museum is definitely worth the time if you're in the area. It is full of wartime memorabilia, planes and military vehicles. My father was a Marine in Iwo Jima and I was able to see the supplies he carried, the weapons that he used and the vehicles that transported him to the island. A must see for history buffs and a great educational place for kids!!

Little-known gem

By Andrew W |

On a recent trip to Paso Robles, we had researched all sorts of things to do but the Estrella Museum had not made our list. On a whim and at the advice of our hotel's front desk man, we decided to check it out. What a surprise. It is a top notch collection of not only some fascinating aircraft but also some amazing classic cars. The displays are thoughtfully created to be far more than just an old vehicle sitting there in front of you, but more like a glimpse into the past. Trust me, DON'T MISS THIS MUSEUM if you make it to Paso Robles.

Hidden Gem for History Buffs

By SeekingVines |

My husband is a history buff. We scheduled this visit between two wine tastings; we need tasting breaks. The museum features historical aircraft, military vehicles, and other vehicles (from NASCAR to Packards). Well-staffed by volunteers who obviously enjoy being there. Plenty of opportunity to wander around, ask questions, and learn. A volunteer even escorted us to a hangar that was off-limits to visitors; my husband had some questions about an aircraft in that hangar so they arranged for supervised access. If World War II history is of interest, highly recommended. Allow 2 hours minimum. Plenty of photo ops!

Great mitary historical items

By heritagedocent |

Nice bit of military and aviation history housed in few buildings and on ground.Neat to see planes upclose. Learned stuff I didn't know happened during war.Auto display was great.Nice chat with docent.Voted for the bumper car.

Cool museum in the middle of no where.

By KellyLLouisee |

This is not only a museum of airplanes there is a full hot rod and war memorabilia hanger. This museum is a site to see when in town. Great for kids to see a glimpse how planes, and cars have changed. Highly recommend.

By CryptoTracker |

This place has done a amazing job collecting and preserving a wide variety of planes, military vehicles, race cars and memorabilia from a wide range of history! A must see place for anyone that loves planes or cars ! A great place for a family trip to learn a little history and to see amazing things that shaped our country!

A Must

By CAGrapeGrower |

We both are pilots and have seen several air museums. This one is an "A." But the "knock-your-socks-off" is the Car Display. Neither of us is a car person, but both were astonished and happy we saw. An "A+."

An unexpected find

By RichardMcKee1000 |

this museum has a large collection of military equipment covering many years, everything from World War 1 uniforms to air to air missiles. I was particularly intrigued by the old fighter jets and military vehicles. The Woodland Auto Display is at the same location and is even more impressive.

War Memorabilia and More

By Indyblonde |

We stumbled on this place while looking around for wineries in the San Miguel area. It's definitely not the Smithsonian, but it does have a lot of interesting WW I and WW II artifacts. Old uniforms, maps, weaponry, personal photos of men standing in front of their airplanes. And of course, the airplanes (mostly a little more modern), tanks, personnel carriers, etc.

And then next door to it and even better is an small auto museum called Woodland Auto Museum. Even more fun. It's definitely checking it out and as others have said, it's a nice break from wineries.

One item that was interesting at the auto museum was a framed letter to Henry Ford complimenting him on his "dandy car", signed by Clyde Barrow and date stamped 1934.

Great Collection of Aircraft (and Cars)

By David S |

This museum has an extensive collection of aircraft and WWII-related materials. It also has a classic car collection with many fine vehicles. Definitely worth a visit!

Warbirds and Car Show

By Fred G |

Entered my Shelby in the War birds and Wheels Car Show. Old war planes, military trucks and equipment set in displays of bygone times in cool air conditioned buildings. We walked around and looked for hours. The car show was awesome with 100s of cars shined up and proud on the tarmac and around some of the static planes.

Great time.

By timothy m |

Had a great time. Exhibits are amazing. I've never been so close to planes like this. Staff are a wealth of knowledge. Peter in the car exhibit was great.

Most Improved Award

By Peter R |

I went to the Estrella Warbird Air Museum in 2004 and it was an interesting neighborhood museum. Now it's an incredible collection for a small town museum. I went with friends on a cold rainy day and was really impressed by the size of the collection and the access to the planes. There are indoor and outdoor displays of real planes and military vehicles. You can walk around most displays and some you can climb up to or into. With the attached auto display, it makes for a fun couple of hours or whole afternoon.

Fine place and well function museum

By hjalni |

We planned a visit and get more of what we expected. The staff was friendly and the museum stuff was fine.

Varied

By Donna D |

I love a museum where the docents are knowledgeable in the info the museum is offering, & this is most definitely that sort of place! This gem had some coverage of each war the U.S. has been involved in since WWl. There is also a most interesting display of instruments of measurement from WWll. That was my favorite part!

A must for any history buff.

By DrRexT |

You can walk up to actual warbirds and see how big they really are. They have aircraft, armor, artillery, uniforms, artifacts from all the great wars. Every rifle ever fired by the military. All actual military items. Many of the warbirds actually fly for air shows and other events.

Awesome

By Verdis U |

It is one of the best museums I have been to in a long time. if you are World War II buff this is a must. Everyone there is very friendly a lot of restoration is being done on planes. Lots of hand on

Top Gun Revisited

Our car show was held on the side tarmac and what a wonderful spot. The staff was very accommodating and helpful. Plus we got to tour the museum and planes.

Small, manageable, excellent plane and car museum

By yolyfe1215 |

This is a great place for kids and families. War plans, a tank, vintage cars and motorcycles, war memorabilia exhibits, etc. Not cost prohibitive, nice docents, doesn't take hours to see.

Airport Airplane Museum

By PilotMichael |

Yes, there is an airport in Paso Robles used by private planes on a regular and frequent basis. Also at the airport is this extensive museum of many antique warbirds. Opens at the public and definitely worth a visit if you're into airplanes, history or the military.

Learned a Lot!

By Carlota S |

Toured the museum and flew in the mock cockpit! Docents were very informative.
The old classic cars were superb. Great Fun.

Dusty Planes & Shiny Cars

By wordjanitor |

First you're driving down a rutted road that looks like it probably ends next to a cow in the middle of a field, but just after you slow down and consider making a u-turn, you notice that there might be an airplane next to those warehouse-y looking building.

If you're not into planes, vehicles, and military memorabilia, you probably won't have all that much fun checking out this place -- unless you're into classic cars, especially sprint cars. If neither planes, nor cars float your boat, you're probably out of luck. (Because there aren't any boats...)

But if you are into planes, jeeps, helicopters, tanks, and all of those good things, you'll have plenty to see. They have a neat collection of military aircraft from different times and places. Granted, they're outdoors, kinda dusty, and in various stages of restoration, but it's an interesting flock. This isn't the Smithsonian, it's Paso Robles.

You (or your kidlets) can sit in a Huey helicopter or tank turret trainer, which is especially fun if you're the kidlet. The main museum is mostly uniforms, models, and such with another building housing vehicles and ordinance displays. My son loved all of it.

The building with cars has a private collection of some pretty amazing restorations -- including quite a few sprint cars, midgets, super-mods, and other open-wheeled racers. The "big" cars include a beautifully restored REO Speedwagon and Packard.

A Perfect Family Visit

By dtgtyo |

This is a gem of a spot for a family visit because it has aircraft, autos and period memorabilia. There should be something of interest for the whole family.

worth the time

By wendy144 |

great experience, the volunteers were amazing. so wonderful to honor our country's history . my teenage children enjoyed the museum

Nice little museum

By Plus8 |

Good restorations of aircraft, mainly from WW2, plus a few nice cars and an excellent pick-up truck. The air strip operates, should your want to fly in.

Airplanes Plus

By MadMaxie40667 |

My son and I are airplane buffs from way back. My wife puts up with it. We decided that having an airplane museum so close by it had to be visited. Not only do they have great aircraft on display, but they also have military vehicles form the first and second world wars. On top of that they have vintage cars as well as vintage NASCAR and other vintage race cars.

All in all a great take and one of the cleaner privately own museum of its type that I have visited.

great family outing! Great way for the kids to learn history in a fun way.

By Leah W |

This is a fun great activity for family's. the kids love the history and it's great to see all the different car's and plans. A fun way to spend a afternoon.

So much to see!

By pasomaggie |

Plan to spend several hours here if you want to see it all. Planes, cars, and military vehicles as well as displays highlighting military history from WWI forward. Fascinating!

Great place to visit before wine tasting

By Charlie S |

A fantastic place to visit off the beaten path. The auto museum is fantastic. Race cars and historical cars. All in fantastic shape. From a model of the first Mercedes to the last studabeckers. Cars to die for if you grew up mid century. Then air craft from a DC 3 to F 16 that are great to look at and then the hall of freedom that has WW2 gear. Great day to spend several hours.

Interesting museum

By c g |

We thought this museum was very interesting and had a lot to see.
If you like military stuff you need to see this. Will go again and will attend a monthly dinner they offer.

What a treasure!!

By SkiBumwantabee |

Fantastic auto collection AND wonderful displays with WWI and WWII memorabilia.....oh and don’t forget the Warbirds on static display. What a treat.

We always try to visit aircraft museums when we travel and were very glad we stopped here for a couple hours.

Stunningly beautiful

By Slimmingleanne |

Great great collection of planes well thought out of the placing of them, great knowledge of the docents.
and as an unexpected bonus there is also a car museum. The cars have all been donated by a single donor and although not really our thing were stunning and beautifully kept.

Don't Miss This One!

By Boopy1062 |

We are very glad we spent time in this museum. Not only are there a collection of airplanes but there is also a great collection of antique cars, jeeps, etc.

Excellent

By Jana V |

Great museum. We only had a couple of hours but could have spent several - numerous cars and a large array of airplanes and historical military items!

Sobering

By KSSeaB |

I'm glad my friend knew about this place and suggested it, as my husband and I are 'museum people.' Meaning, we do enjoy going through museums when we travel.

The Dick Woodland Car Collection is at the same site as the Estrella Warbird Air Museum, and you pay one entrance fee to see both, BUT the Car Collection is listed as a separate attraction here on Trip Advisor, and I reviewed it separately.

OK, there are several sections of the Warbird Museum. The first is the Gift Shop with a few displays. Then there is the main room, which goes in chronological order from WWI to WWII to Korea to Vietnam to the Gulf Wars. In this section, some attention is paid to women warriers. There is a smaller display about the Tuskegee Airmen. Then an even smaller (almost non-existent) display about the Navajo Code Talkers.

The 'warbirds' are on display outside. My friend, who is a pilot, enjoyed the display. The other three people in our group chose not to do so. We visited in August AND there was a heat wave. Just too hot. My husband and I are returning in February. We'll probably check out the war planes at that time when the weather is cooler. Do bring a visor or ballcap and wear sunscreen.

Then there is a room with military vehicles. Then, finally, is the room in which weaponry is displayed. Every where you look, the weapons developed by people and designed to tear other people apart. I found it sickening to think about what those weapons do to the human body.

I do think it is a worthwhile place to visit. It is a reminder that war is hell. Whoever leads our great nation should be someone who takes sending 'troops' into harm's way very seriously because 'troops' is military-speak for your sons, your grandsons, your husbands and sometimes your daughters, sisters, mothers and wives. You know, real people. It reminded me that the USA is still the only country in the world to have used nuclear weapons on our enemies. It's sobering.

So much fun! 7-14-2016

By Sarah K |

Came here on the way home from Solvang, hubby wanyed to stop here for his birthday. We had so much fun here looking over all the aircraft and vehicles here! We were so excited around every corner! Though it was hot while we were here (about 99) we had a blast!! We belong to our local air museum and are lovers of all military history, it was also a nice bonus to see the car museum as well, we were here a good 2 hours, we had a very long drive home, otherwise we would have been here longer.

More than just an aviation museum

By Brad H |

A well kept secret at the end of Paso Robles Airport. Tons of aviation and military history in the museum, especially WWII era. Great P-38 Lightning exhibit and video. Excellent assortment of Cold War era aircraft on the ramp. Another museum holds motorized military vehicles and armaments (especially missiles/rockets) from WWII/Cold War era. For car buffs an additional interesting museum holds some vintage, beautifully restored cars from the 20th Century including a 1954 red corvette in mint condition. Great value for $12 admission!

Amazing Surprise

By SanFranciscoVoyager |

We went here just because it was near the concert venue we were attending. It was a surprisingly well done museum. We both enjoyed it a lot. We would return.

Well worth a visit

By Katherine P |

An excellent collection, very well presented, of artifacts and aircraft that illustrates life in the military during various eras, as well as an impressive display of ammunition and ordnance. Special note: The Woodland Classic Car Collection, and retired Nascars that have been driven by famous drivers, are on the same site, as well as a working ham radio station.

fun with friends

By CheapEats019 |

Surprised to find such and interesting museum...short hours during this time...would have liked more more time...will go back.

A great military, classic car and munitions museum.

By johntello |

Visited this Warbird Air, military and classic car museum with my son and grandson. We were all impressed with the displays of military aircraft, vehicles and weapons/munitions as well as classic cars. Excellent layout, nice staff and impressive amount of items on display, both indoors and outdoors. Open Thursday through Monday. Don't miss this museum when you go to Paso Robles.

History Lesson

By kenzapal |

Loved seeing all the old warbirds and other WW2 things on display. I enjoyed the self guided tour. If you like this museum also try the Commemorative Air Force Museum at Camarillo airport. They have at least 6 WW2 warbirds that still fly on a regular basis including a P-51.

Take a Break

By BoboTravlr |

After a few days of wine and distillery touring we wanted to do something to break the pattern. The Warbirds museum was just what we needed. This museum is surprisingly large with multiple buildings housing military artifacts, armor, ordinance, vehicles and cars and of course planes and helicopters. The displays are well designed and the docents/volunteers are really helpful and clearly dedicated and passionate about their efforts. A must do when in Paso.

A must see

If you're a military history buff you'll enjoy this self guided walking tour. Personally i wish there was a guide or a recorded guide to listen too... would have been much better. Biggest Surprise Of The Trip

By JohnFromSantaClara |

On the way home from a family vacation in SLO we decided to stop by the Estrella Warbirds Museum. My boys and I play a lot of board games with a military theme so they have learned most of the vehicles used in the various World Wars. After driving down the paved barely two laned road we pulled in. The museum was well air conditioned and well staffed. The staff were extremely friendly and gave us the lay of the land. After explaining the various buildings and areas we roamed around on our own.

The boys LOVED it! :D

They climbed on many of the vehicles that were open. My wife reminisced about her days programming for the F14b. I gushed when I saw the Intruder.

Our only gripe was that the car museum was really not for kids. They should have put up signs warning parents to watch their kids. Anytime the kids touched anything...even simple displays (i.e. not cars) they got chastised by the museum staff member.

The price was only $20 for a family. Wow...great. :)

This was the surprise hit of our trip. Awesome.

Interesting Place

By Mark M |

Anyone into U.S. history, WWI, WWII, the Korean, Vietnam or Gulf wars will appreciate this place. They have a good collection of warplanes and helicopters outside along with lots of other cool artifacts (a tank turret!). We visited in mid-August and it was very hot so we didn't spend a lot of time studying the aircraft this trip. The indoor exhibits are really good. Everything from uniforms, weapons and all kinds of other stuff is on display. The best part are the docents. Veterans all, they know their stuff. Leave a generous tip in the jar! In other outbuildings are military vehicles, and personally owned vintage planes being restored or maintained. And there is a good sized car museum on site too! The only down side, and it's a nit-pick, is that the place isn't air conditioned. I didn't deduct anything for that because I appreciate that they sink the proceeds back into improving and maintaining the exhibits. Plus is would cost millions to air condition such a big place. Don't be discouraged because there are plenty of fans to circulate the air.

Hidden Treasure

By Sammie63 |

Very nice!! So many things to look at, from old uniforms to weapons to aircraft! We spent two hours there and could have stayed longer. We showed up on a Tuesday and it was closed, (they open on Thursday ), but they opened for us and then more and more people showed up. They ask for a donation of $10 per person, and it was well worth it. They also have a great car museum on the property. Will go back again when in the area.

Outstanding

By ThreeTree |

Came off PCH1 at Cambria for the 45 min drive here. There is a great water park at the top of the road (we visited also) to drop the "non interested" family members. Because believe me guys you deserve this.

This is the BEST I've visited, the reason is simple, it's run with the passion of volunteer veterans. We met founding member Gary who showed us a shot down Japanese fighters machine gun that had probably fired on US aircraft. Many of the exhibits are the personal equipment of serviceman. There is a genuine working US Navy fighter F18 simulator you can try, Steve its operator, gave some great coaching.

My only complaint is that I didn't schedule enough time here, along with the car exhibits I reckon a good geek could get 4 hours out of here ( that is without baggage if you know what I mean!!!). I traveled from Ireland for this, took a chance of breaking the driving tradition of doing the full costal drive. But Paso Robles is an interesting drive with a European feel from the surrounding vine yards and the water park acts as a great incentive or let's call it what is; a bribe!

Besides the friendly staff of Estrella Warbirds, The fighter exhibits reminded me not to mess with these people, the good people of the USA!

Visited for an old car parts swap meet

By Steve S |

An excellent place to visit if you interested in vintage race cars. Also on site are many vintage airplanes and written history about each

very cool museum

By dkecklund |

Lots of stuff to see here from the many airplanes of various vintages to the many rooms of displays. The F-18 simulator is very interesting and it was great to see an ex F-18 pilot being challenged by it. The car museum is perhaps one of the best things there.

Worth a sightsee if you need to see old aircraft and vehicles.

By Grahame M |

Not a big site, but worth a visit for the history. The museum cars were a bonus with 500 series also. Can be very hot there, but well worth the visit.

A dignified and exciting museum

By Eva |

It was an unpretentious stop on the way to Santa Barbara and we loved it. An authentic museum full of history and respect. He deserves the stop. Best seen and I've seen several in Florida. Magnificent collection of military cars and aircraft and race models of shell and classics.

Each item had an informative plaque next to it.

Time well spent.

This is a Hidden Gem

By JC1064 |

Most people are in Paso Robles for the wine tours - we decided to do this tour instead - its about 4 miles from downtown - and easy to find - entry is $15 per adult and for that you get as much time as you want to wander around all exhibits on site in your own order at your own pace - there are old fighter jets, titan missile, tanks, military vehicles and a massive selection of cars from the model T onwards to include nascar cars and all sorts of racing cars and classic cars. In addition there is an exhibition covering WW1 WW2 and Vietnam exhibits, uniforms and equipment. We spend about 4 hours here wandering around and they have some fascinating and great staff. We are glad we avoid the wine tours and went here instead.

Nice Museum

By LA A |

Very nice and welcoming staff. All engaging, and know their history from Military to race cars. Enjoyed my visit very much.

Awesome place for the whole family.

By lilymaviace |

We have lived in Paso Robles for over a year now and have visited this museum at least once if not twice a month. My two young sons love the airplane exhibits aswell as the one of a kind cars. I have never encountered a rude person even when my boys become rambunctious. The employees/volunteers are always very helpful and friendly. My children ask to visit this museam by name. Prices are great, but remember to bring water and tennis shoes. Also some advice try to visit Fri, Sat, or Sun since the airport is very close and you can take five on the benches outside and watch the airplanes at the airport fly in and take off.

Impressive Items for a small museum

By SunnyK944 |

My husband, a Vietnam Veteran, really enjoyed the museum. He saw alot of items used in Vietnam. The tanks and planes outside added alot to the experience.

Esxcellent examples of Military Power

By beebo122 |

Amazing museum in the middle of "nowhere". We stumbled upon this gem on Hwy 46 East heading to Airport Road. Everything you've always wanted to relive the WW I and II experience including a simulator. Clothing, weapons, habitats, plus another building is dedicated to antique cars. Really don't miss this amazing outdoor/indoor venue. Even a Blue Angels cockpit! I am a female and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Subtle and powerful

By Adina R |

This amazing museum ran primarily by volunteers is a friendly and casual visit into military history. There is a flight simulator. You can walk around planes and see intricacies. The seperate auto museum provided by the Woodland collection provides wonderful examples of automobile diversity and history.

Well Worth the Trip

By Mark M |

Great place if you like learning about our country's history. Tons of interesting things to see here in addition to all the vintage and more modern airplanes and military hardware. The docents are wonderful. It is just a mile or two off Hwy. 46 East and well worth the trip. I look forward to my next trip to Paso Robles just to see what additions have been made, because they are always improving the place.

Wonderful collection of military resources and Cars

By traveltarot |

Great combo of historically important military planes - from WWII to Vietnam wars, rounded out with a mock up of a field hospital, Communication equipment and various resources used.

The car museum had far more cars than expected...
A great side trip in wine country. Highly recommend.

Warbird Museum worth the visit

My husband and I were visiting the Paso Robles area and decided to check out the Estrella Warbird Air Museum. It provides an impressive history of aircraft, with a comprehensive array of visuals. Outside there are plenty of planes to inspect and to the delight of my husband, he found the plane his dad flew in WWII. We didn't know about the car museum also located here, and found that equally as fascinating. The docents at both museums were knowledgeable and interesting and made the visit more enjoyable.

Planes and flying history in the middle of wine country.

By Paul B |

If you like vintage airplanes and history of aviation then this place will fill you interest. Worth the time spent seeing planes that are not only historic but many still fly. Its not uncommon to see a P-40 or the like wafting by in the air around Paso Robles, Atascadero and Templeton.

Pleasantly Surprised

By ALC181 |

Having lived in Paso Robles for 10 years, this was my first visit to the museum. I was very surprised by how many planes that were there. In addition, there is an auto museum that was equally impressive.

Great collection, definitely worth a stop

By Milocat007 |

Shares grounds with a car museum; one fee gets you into both. Either are worth the price, even if you're not a car or airplane nut.

interesting and informative

By Johannapnc |

We spent a few hours touring the inside and outside of the museum, it was very interesting and informative, the staff was very knowledgeable.

This history must NOT be lost!

By BlancoBabe |

We spent hours at the museum and soaked up the sights, the memories and the facts, all while imagining the thrill of flying in these machines. Walking among the planes, the cars and the displays was all quite exciting and educational.

Take time and review history

By RadEng80 |

This museum was created and maintained by veterans and volunteers along the central coast. You will see things from private collections that you will not see anywhere else. Don't expect a govt funded extravaganda. Talk to the people around the museum; you might be speaking with a test pilot from Edwards AFB, a skunk works engineer, a navy nuke, a Hughes executive, or any other amazing resource. They also have an excellent aircraft resource library. The EWM recently opened an auto museum also (Woodland Auto Display). Check their website at www.ewarbirds.org

Great museum

By Kat42373 |

We went here as there was a Huey my Vietnam Veteran husband wanted to see. We got much more than that as there is a war museum plus a great car museum.

A great experience

By auctionguy1 |

We have driven past the Estrella museum sign for years, but never seemed to have the time to stop. Well today we did and we were pleasantly surprised. The staff was very freindly and informative. There were a lot more classic cars than expected and a good amount of military aircraft. Flight simulator was also dun and worth the money. A great experience we had stopping here.

Multiple slices of history

By Steve B |

Excellent collection of military aircraft. Inside you will find military artifacts nicely displayed with informative descriptions.Try the flight simulator. The automotive collection is a nice companion display. You will need a couple of hours to really enjoy all this museum has to offer. The volunteer docents are pleasant and provide a wealth of information.

An Enjoyable Visit

By Al B |

Our party of 7 adults and 3 children visited the war bird museum and had a very enjoyable experience. The children had a great time checking out the army and marine vehicles along with the aircraft and racing museum. There was a variety of Air Force aircraft primarily from the Viet Nam era forward but there were also some older ones such as the C-47. The inside displays were very interesting along with the various uniforms and flight simulators.
All the museum volunteers were very friendly and helpful in answering questions. I would estimate we spent 1 and a half to two hours there before the children ran out of gas. I would recommend a visit if you enjoy checking out historical aircraft, military vehicles and vintage passenger cars along with racing vehicles.

Military History and Car Exhibits in Paso Robles

By Susan H |

Nice little museum near the Paso Robles airport - we just didn't allow enough time. Air museum has a lot of history, model airplanes and war memorabilia. Enjoyed the military vehicle section too. The Woodland auto display is INCREDIBLE!! Classic cars and racing section - kids would probably really enjoy this area.

Welcome Surprise

Surprisingly interesting and informative museum in an out of the way place. Spent a couple hours here. Small gift shop.

Educational!

By mjharris805 |

Lot's of things to see and learn about. Planes, cars as well as military vehicles. It is so easy to spend several hours there looking around! Make this one of your stops in Paso Robles.

Birthday fun

By ArtSocial 805 |

I took my son and a bunch of his friends here for a birthday party. They let the boys sit in the planes and wear helmets. They got to try the flight simulator and even had a place wear were could snack on some pizza.

Estrella Warbird Air Museum plus a Car Show

By krk44 |

This museum has a lot of interesting WW 1 and WW II items and a small car collection. Outside are aircraft and other types of military transportation placed around the buildings which are near the runway. There is an admission charge but in May on the day of the "Estrella War Birds and Wheels Car Show" the museum, planes and the cars entered in the show are all free to see. Also available is a ride in a vintage airplane for those who want to pay the price which is not cheap but I have been told that this is one of the best prices to ride in the older planes. We were there for the car show with our 1966 Mustang and it was a fun day. We were located next to the tarmac so got close up views of the pilot and his passenger where the planes were taking off and landing. The only bad thing was a record high temperature of over 100 degrees and with no real shade it was pretty miserable so I would advise you to check the weather before going if you have trouble with heat. Other than that there was something for everyone to enjoy from young to old.

Old planes, new memories

By ZMANsays9 |

Take a long walk down memory lane walking around these old warbirds from our distant wars., Space capsules and experimental flying machines, as well

Second visit ............

By Simon H |

We first visited here in 2013 and were so impressed we just had to go again; we were glad we did as there have been several additions since our last time here. Again the Exhibits were many and varied with more on the army since before.

The reason for an average rating? Well on arrival we were informed if our son wanted to use the F/A18 simulator there was a $20 cost for half an hour - no problem with that but when we tried to get him into the simulator towards the end of our visit we were told by the curator operating the simulator that we had to buy a ticket from the reception desk (this wasn't mentioned when we purchased our general entry tickets) and then having presented the ticket to him he would see "if he could fit us in". Seeing there was no-one else this did somewhat surprise us. The visit was spoilt by the attitude of this person who seemed more interested in "playing" on the simulator himself and showing off to younger visitors.

Central Coast Air Museum

By catie194 |

We enjoyed seeing all the aircraft and auto museum. The displays are excellent with staff always eager to answer any questions you may have.

I enjoy a good museum.

By Craig F |

We moved to Paso Robles 13 years ago and we visited Estrella at that time and it was ok not great but ok. They hosted a car show this year and we attended. World class, we were impressed. We saw everything and then went back the next Thursday and spent all day there. Thank you

Casual and fun

By Ntsbitawdojihh |

We enjoyed visiting this museum. It’s laid back feel let our kids learn and enjoy at their own pace. They especially loved sitting inside the planes.

surprisingly good museum

By frogmanslo |

rather large plane, military vehicle, sprint car and classic car museum. Quite large given the size of town it sits in.

Great break on your wine tasting tour

By michellemF4338YS |

The Estrella Warbird Air Museum is an educational and fascinating walk through history. If you're in the area wine tasting and you have the kids it's a perfect stop. Not only is it a visual walk through aviation, but is also a destination for car buffs so you might just catch an antique car show or swap meet. It is easily accessed just off Airport Road, and within a mile or two of The Ravine Waterpark, downtown Paso Robles, several wineries and some of the best RV parks in the area. All the makings for a great family vacation!

Must See!

By Sean K |

If you enjoy aviation history - especially the WWII period - this is a "must see" museum. Collections include both aviation and ground support vehicles. Each lovingly restored and maintained.

This is one of several medium sized collections around the country that don't get the attention they deserve.

Annually they are host to a major Paso Robles air show. Combine a visit to the air show with a visit to the museum for a great trip. Add on an extra day to stop by the many wineries in the area for a full package trip that can keep the whole family entertained - air show, aviation museum, wineries, spas, hotel & pool, and lots of great restaurant options.

About 2 1/2 easy hours South of San Jose.

Great legacy of our military service men and women!

By O380LPdavec |

Our two and a haft hour visit to The Estrella warbird museum was a great step back in time to a period my parents participated in ; as well as ; a time my generation lived through. The aircraft , the vehicles and equipment on display are artifacts that exhibit the production of a nation that can pull together in time of need.
The peoe staffing the museum are another fantastic asset. Their knowledge and dedication to the exhibits were refreshing and genuine ! Thank you!!!

Great Addition to Aviation History

By Jerry H |

Loving airplanes of all types and all ages, I was totally fascinated by these aircraft. As a 16 year old high school kid in 1956 I bought a 1941 Luscombe Silvaire, with fuel injection engine to support aerobatics, though all I did was chandelles and lazy eights. I became an officer in the Air Force hoping to extend by flying skills, but alas the flight surgeon found a chorioretinitis scar on the retina of my left eye. Thus I spent my first two years as an intercept director then passed some sort of test and wound up teaching computer systems to AF officers my last two years - 1965 through 67. Though I wound up as a computer analyst in Sunnyvale in 1968, my love of airplanes continued unabated with DC-3s and F-16s still found to be fascinating.

Surprise Gem in Paso Robles

By Sylvia |

The Estrella Airbird Museum was a nice surprise. My husband and I love museums about America's history.
One of the indoor buildings features information and memorabilia about the different World Wars. Two more buildings have the different vehicles used in past wars. Outside there is a Great Display of Combat Airplanes.
In the last building there is an extensive display of Classic Cars.
We thoroughly enjoyed this Museum.
The entrance fee is $15, but it is well worth the price of admission to support and keep this private Museum open
The Museum has various events each year too. They were getting ready to have a Mothers Day event.

The Planes & Cars

By JRP |

Wonderful museum with knowledgable docents who were passionate about ever exhibit. Great place to take children for living history experience

Great museum with lots of variety.

By Reggie A |

I know you are expecting to see old planes and jets, but there's a lot more at this museum. I saw old cars and not just military issue although those were there also. There were race cars, there were uniforms, there was all kinds of various memorabilia. I took my dad when he came to visit and he's an amateur pilot and I think he really enjoyed it.

Planes and Cars

I've been meaning to stop here for years and finally did. We planned one hour and stayed three. War planes, Higgins Boat, tanks, jeeps, stock cars, military memorabilia, old cars and motorcycles, on and on. A great place with nice people. I'll be back.

Collection of Planes on Display

By Gaz1941 |

It will cost you a fistful of dollars for admission, but they do have a small museum assembled by the volunteers as well as a fairly large collection of airplanes on display outside. I heard that most of their vehicles are privately-owned, but they're well kept up. Pretty nice gift shop too.

A bit of plain/plane history!

By Jackie H |

Great place to spend an hour. Men will especially enjoy it for all of the machinery. Good for kids too. Well done!

Amazing what volunteers have done.

By harold b |

This restored aircraft exhibit is definitely worth seeing, despite being a bit out of the way.

Indoor period rooms (mostly WW2), hardware and history themes. Large outdoor aircraft and even rocket display area, adjacent to the PR airport strip.

Limited hours, small entry fee.

Amazing Collection

By Christina C. |

We really loved visiting this museum. The collection of war birds, weapons & other war era items is immense. The bonus for my husband and me was the classic car collection. There were a lot of cool vintage cars. We definitely will be back because i know we didn't see everything.

We took a peek, but it was closed and very hot that day!

By waterwoman1 |

This is for real die hard vintage military aviation guys. It's not really a "museum" but a collection of stuff and guys rehabbing old aircraft.
Located on the south end of the airport. Catch it in between wineries.

Very much worth a visit

By DonaldYokum |

Many Viet Nam era aircraft represented, fairly large collection. Car museum has some real classics, including a Mercedes 300 SL gull wing and a large number of race cars. A really nice collection!

Great collection of planes and cars

By Ed F |

Spent 2 hours viewing and learning about aircraft/ armament used in our various wars. They also have a fabulously maintained car collection. Worth a visit.

Stand next to (or under) these incredible airframes.

By drrext2018 |

Many modern and older military aircraft extending from prior to WWII to the present day. Helicopters, jets, piston engines, transporters, tanks. All free to visit and wander among these warbirds. It's amazing to see how big even the nimble fighters are when you stand under them. A great way to spend the afternoon. You can also visit the WWII museums for 6$ (?)

Be sure to allow enough time

By Carolyn B |

This is a fabulous museum with something for everyone. They have the war room, warbirds, incredible restored cars, and stories to tell. The docents are very knowledgeable and more than happy to share.

What A Surprise ! Awesome Collection

By bccrab |

We visit Paso frequently and do the winery thing but this time I decided we should try some new places. I found this on a map and decided to check it out. It is a truly remarkable place with a collection of military aircraft and vehicles that was much more extensive than I had expected . In addition there are weapons collections and communications devices as well as uniforms and other military gear . As a bonus there is a collection of cars on display that is awesome . Antiques , racing cars and lots of other memorabilia . We visited just this morning and had the place almost entirely to ourselves . Great place very close to the Eberle winery off route 46.

Warbird Museum Memorial honors donor

By Carol C |

Wonderful variety of displays, including war planes, tanks, rocket stages. There was a memorial being held for one of the major supporters of the museum, and the military parts of the event were touching (missing man flyover, transport plane flyover). I'm sorry for his family's loss but glad the museum could so honor him.

Great Place

By TexasGloworm |

This was an unexpected surprise. We took a day from wine tasting and visited this small museum. If you are into history this is the museum for you. We really enjoyed looking at all the planes. They also have an antique car section. All the cars were awesome. This is a great place to take your kiddos as well.

Warbirds and much more

By Kari M |

This museum in absolutely worth a visit if you happen to be in the neighborhood. Besides warbirds you will find military vehicles. There is also a separate section with lots of veteran cars, including La Salle, the car Archie Bunker sang about!

Planes, Cars and Guns Oh My! - Well Done!

By CharleySays |

I am impressed with the incredible collection of military history that has been assembled. The breadth of the collection is astounding and for a small place in the country. If you have interest in military historical items, this place is for you, from the collection of vehicles to the collection of missiles, and the collection of different shells, it is a real learning experience!! - Just went on another visit to this museum and it is growing and the maintenance continues to increase the quality of the displays. The number of planes continues, slowly to increase and this is a really educational museum. The kids will be engaged just to be near the planes and the displays!
The Woodland Auto display is also part of the museum. The display includes cars from NASCAR, Sprint, CART, and a group of samples of street and collector cars. It is a packed museum and I was told more hangers are being constructed to increase the number of vehicles on display! Well worth you time!

Great war planes and flight simulator

By kidvacation |

This is by far my son's favorite museum in Paso Robles. He loves going into the planes and tanks and trying out the flight simulator. If your lucky you might even get a tour by one of the wonderful vets that serve as docents. They are extremely kind to the kids and share lots of wonderful stories and information about the artifacts in the museum. Even after 3 visits the Estrella War Bird Museum is enthralling and a highlight of our trip.

Worth checking out

By denniss529 |

I can't wrap my head around where to start, sure you will see some airplanes, and helicopters, but there are all kinds of other stuff. My favorite is the tank trainer turret. You can climb in and sit in the various seats. It is utilitarian and claustrophobic, and made me thankful for all the tankers who have served this country. Many jeeps are restored, as well as a cool Vietnam era "gun truck". Attached to the museum is the Woodland Auto Display, which has a variety of autos as well as a large number of early Sprint cars.

A fun stop

By Don W |

The museum is a fun stop for the whole family, with an unexpectedly large collection that you can "Get up close and personal" to. Great for aviation and automobile buffs, including the kids.

Interesting and full of history

By KMargason |

Took the grandkids here and had a great time. So much to see. We went on a weekend when the museum was hosting a car show, so there was a lot of activity, including live music. Kids enjoyed the war exhibits and the planes and the exhibits of the uniforms that were worn by our military over the years. We had a great time.

Great way to do something in the area other than wine taste

By Reg9000 |

This Museum is a hidden gem for such a rural area, lots of vintage stuff for all to see and history to learn. Surprisingly well stocked for being in a small town.

A great place for kidos to run around and be active, lots of space and a few outdoor things to see also.

A nice break from wine tasting (not that that is not also a fun day), just another reason to visit the area.

Hidden Gem

By Ron B |

If not for Trip Advisor we would have missed this. It is out of the way at the small airport but is a big museum. They have so many items and there is a store for all of it. Only open Thursday to Sunday. If you enjoy military history this is the place with all the displays. They have many aircraft also with several army vehicles. The group is restoring other aircraft that you can view also. The Woodland car museum is another plus for this site. Don't miss this one

Fascinating!!

By Mrs. L |

Wow! This place is so well kept, staff are knowledgeable and friendly, huge array of amazing aircraft. A must see!!

The coolest experience on the central coast

By Jessica B |

Estrella Warbird and Auto Museum is THE place to go! Recently hosted a guided tour and flyover for a birthday and it was even better than we could have imagined. Kids and parents both enjoyed every bit. Staff was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and extra helpful in helping us execute our day. Letting us use outside space to picnic helping store the cake and everything inbetween. You could spend days here and still find and learn something amazing about the history and events. Definitely a place worth going out of your way to explore!

What a Great Museum!!

By IMBITTN |

We spent a couple of hours this morning on a tour of the Estrella Warbird Museum. It was one of the most interesting and informative tours that we have taken. It is so important that people (volunteers in this case) are spending hours to refurbish and maintain artifacts that provide information about the past history of the United States. I highly recommend that you take the time to visit the museum if you are ever in the area.

VERY NICE SMALL COLLECTION OF WARPLANES AND CARS

By crazyaboutravel |

As part of a coastal vacation we went to this museum and it was very nice clean and orderly with war memorabilia and vintage cars, planes, uniforrns, and other such items. It was worth the trip to see. I believe we paid 10.00 which was about right for what we saw.

Local Treaure

By Janice M |

Great collection of airplanes and helipcopters, military memorabalia, and a new wing of cars including classic cars, race cars, and lots of memorabalia. They have done a fantastic job assembling all of these vehicles, airplanes and artifacts. Looking forward to going again.

Husband and son loved museum!

My husband and oldest son loved this museum! Very interactive, could climb in and on many of the pieces, lots of interesting stuff to see! Great for history buffs like my husband.

Intresting war items and beautiful cars

By drderhammer |

A good spot of all ages to view well restored aircraft , war items and classic cars. We took our children and grandchildren and they enjoyed it all. We spent several hours there and nobody complained of being bored.

Great afternoon history lesson.

By danielj9706 |

A really nice small museum with really well taken care of exhibits. Friendly stall that seemed to have an answer for every one of our questions. Enjoyed that the kids could get some hands on fun and enjoyment.

Great collection and excellent customer support

By WWglobal |

They have very knowledgeable staff there to walk you through all the exhibits, one of the best experience we have (and we have visited a lot of museum of this nature). We thank them for giving us a great experience.

Nice family outing

By TurkeyPotPie |

A decent collection of planes, autos and military memorabilia. Both the children (ages 5-9) enjoyed this place.

Small, but worth the visit!

By Debra E |

I had to drag my husband out of here... lol! He absolutely loves military planes, and memorabilia!! They have a nice assortment of planes, and really cool historical vehicles/uniforms on display.

American military history and very classic cars

By panamajack94 |

I have been going here for years and every time I see something different. The self paced walking tour where you can take in lots of posted history or take the time to do an internet search for more in-depth detail and photos. The docents have a great deal of knowledge to share as well. The inside static displays are detailed and well lit and the outside displays are eye opening. So much to see and learn. The team there seems to be always restoring craft for land, sea and air... they do it all. My hat is off to the crew and volunteers of this museum.

Wonderful Car Collection

By OldBigBob |

It is known as the Estrella Warbird Air Museum, but, to me, the superior attraction is their historical auto collection. From period Packards to Jaguars, and so many others, their extensive collection is well worth a visit. The racing vehicles displayed were particularly special. There is much to see, so budget time to enjoy all they offer.

Good fun

By Christopher S |

We live in the area, but we've never been to this museum before. We took our 9 and 5 year olds and they had a blast. The planes, the tanks, the cars. Their eyes were wide and didn't want to leave. I'm sure we will return soon.

A Visual Walk Through History

By william b |

Estrella is a combination of a huge interior display of military items and an outside display of various aircraft. DOCENTS are there to explain their area of specialty (military vehicles, military uniforms, military aircraft, etc). Each display has an information listing that details the uniforms, photos, awards, accents, and equipment. There is ALSO A COLLECTIBLE CAR DISPLAY that brought back memories. Estrella is a must stop for information and collectible memories by displaying authentic items.

Excellent!

By Party! |

Wonderful planes and cars. Every family member is certain to enjoin the museum. Friendly, helpful staff.
