This show was nothing like that of years passed.
The backdrops looked like small cheaply made posters or ads. Fewer live actors were used - Fewer still interacted with audience /walked out of art. Left close to last act
* If this is your first time you’ll think it’s awesome.
* The singers were amazing

The Pageant is totally unique, a must see at least once in a lifetime. The Pageant is a re-creation of paintings, sculptures, posters, etc. using live actors and accompanied by an orchestra.. The art works are achieved with special lighting and other special effects. There is a theme around which the program is created. This year it is The Grand Tour and the narration is very well-done. It flows well and holds your interest. Don't miss this.

Attended on a Friday night July 13. There is a free shuttle to get there, but we had a car and drove. It is very busy but we were able to park, $20.00, not far away across the street easy walk. I had ordered my tickets in March. We did arrive early about 6:30, which I do recommend.

We had eaten beforehand so cannot comment on restaurant there. There were many people at tables eating, I believe they are reserved not sure or at least first come first serve.

There are lots of like edges where people could set up a picnic. We sat next to a mother and daughter and they had a nice picnic and wine set up so that is a good option.

I particularly enjoyed the Children's Art Exhibit ages preschool to 12th grade, some were very good. There was also a band performing so it is a really nice atmosphere to relax and enjoy.

I only rented binoculars I don't think you need cushions. They do hold your drivers license to return them after the show.

I absolutely loved the show, so amazing and the work put into it. One set up they actually show you how it is put together really something. They made it so entertaining and the orchestra was great also and narration.

They have exhibits on the side and people up on the hill.

They ended with the Last Supper as is their usual. I loved every minute of it.

I was so glad to be able to attend the Pageant of the Masters.

You must see this. It is a lifesize portrait or sculpture on stage to make you think you are right there

My husband and I go to Laguna Beach every other year to attend the Pageant of the masters. It is always a magical and breathtaking experience to see famous works of art recreated using real people. We've never been disappointed and this year's Pageant was particularly excellent. We highly recommend this unique performance art experience!

This is a very unique show experience geared toward adults and mature teens. Held in an amphitheater with great sight lines.

By diane q |

The pageant really must be seen to be understood. Live people recreate famous artworks from paintings to sculpture to pop art. The theater is set in the Laguna canyon just inland from downtown Laguna Beach. They serve wine and beer and small food.

After attending the Pageant for the past 10 years... this show was very disappointing ... based upon the lackluster applause by the audience ... they seemed to agree with us. The best part of the evening was our dinner at Terra ... We are questioning whether we will continue our annual tradition to attend the show.

When buying tickets suggest getting Center, and A row in the Center section. When getting closer to the stage, you can have trouble seeing all the side shows. So if you have neck issues, this would be the best.

Take customs and blanket. The seats are wood ones similar to the ones you find at Dodger stadium Take field glasses to see things close up. They allow wine and food in the theater.

Meals in the event are normal for this type of event. Water if $4.00. Wine is $9.00....

People bring in their own meal baskets. Finding a place to seat can be an issue if you wait until 6pm. The event opens at 7:30pm and starts at 8;30PM or there around. We were late starting. Seems like there was no door closing since we saw many people coming in after the event started.

Going during the week there is less people traffic as a hold.

I went thirty years ago and loved it. It is such a unique experience. Now, it has progressed a bit with the technology and it has enhanced the experience. Great night!

Pageant of the Arts is a 90 minute evening that is unique. Masters of the art paintings are shown in tableau form as a full orchestra plays music related to the period piece and a grand tour of a narrative is told. Even with binoculars it is difficult to tell who is the real character from the one on the painting. It is a must to see. Leave hours before to experience the jurie art show on the premises called The Festival of the Arts.

This place is great we go once a year spend all day there and watch the show the five art show is fantastic this is an awesome building and so many things to see hear a lot of art exhibits a definite must if you are into this kind of thing

We attended Patent of the Masters tonight and even though the show was enjoyable, it was not as good as we remembered it. This was our 3rd time attending. We started many years ago and remember how they used to have the people in the picture walk on to the stage and move to their places and then freeze, the lighting would change and you were amazed that it looked just like an oil painting. They used to do this also on the last picture of the evening for The Last Supper but this year it was just pre set up. We were disappointed that so many pictures looked like the outfits were made of cardboard and just the head was showing. This is not like it used to be.

It was the 85th Anniversary of the Pageant and the presentation was as enjoyable as my first one 30 yrs. ago. The facility is tucked into a canyon and very pleasant, so arrive early to wander thru exhibits housing a myriad of art forms on display for sale with many of the creators on site to answer questions.

We took advantage of the early bird special to dine in the on-site, "Terra" restaurant amid old trees. Our salads were fresh & flavorful and the braised lamb shank with kale & cauliflower mashed 'taters was excellent. It was $24 for our"early bird special" but setting & service were excellent.

The performance is hard to describe, but the statues and live "bronze" actors were incredible and the illustration of how the process is put together very informative. The incredible lighting brought the numerous "paintings" to life and were worth the trip.

We went with "Day Tripper" and the bus service and guide made it effortless.

This is my third Pageant and if you are staying in Orange County during the summer, it is a MUST. The extraordinary sets and cast PLUS the orchestra truly make it unique and hard to top year after year. The 2018 Pageant was more contemporary and very enjoyable since it was a tribute to its origins......don't miss it next year!!

This event is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced as people become part of an actual painting and you try to figure out which figures are human versus paint. Be sure to take a strong pair of binoculars or rent them at the venue. We were far back at the venue and needed them to have a good experience. Per the website FAQs we took seat cushions and you can BYOB as long as it’s not in glass.

Allow time before or after to view the art exhibited on site. It’s worth every penny!

There is nothing like seeing art come to life. Real life actors portray the artworks we are so familiar with in such a creative way!

By ShavaunR |

Most awesome experience!!!! This is the most wonderful show. Visually captivating!! Not sure how they can do this year after year so well, but happy they do!

By tiogapass |

We have been attending the Pageant for about 10 years. It is even better this year than before. As you may have read, costumed actors are placed in painted backdrops which are then framed and lit so perfectly that the tableaux appears flat - exactly like the original work of art. Or, actors may be covered in body paint and hold a pose as a statue. Each image is held for about 90 seconds. If it is a statue, it might rotate. Since many statues are nude or nearly so, we are amazed at the athleticism of the actors holding some very difficult poses and not appearing to breathe.
Each year's program is organized around a theme, so we get to learn something about art and history. Each year, a new show runs all summer. A live orchestra accompanies the show and a live narrator guides us through the program.
There are multiple areas of the stage that open to reveal art as well as displays at the sides and even in the hillside around the theater, so there is always some work of art coming or going.
Before the show, you can browse the art on the Festival grounds, have a meal and listen to live music. In all, it is a lovely experience.

Great entertainment. I’m sorry not read all the bad reviews. I’ve never been before but thoroughly enjoyed it.
I read complaints about the seats. My husband didn’t come because of the bad seat reviews. The seats are just fine.
I think some people just like to complain.
I thought it was an interesting history of fashion.

First, let me qualify my rating this year. We've been multiple times, like others, so we have some basis for comparison. If this had been our first visit, of course we would have rated it "excellent". We still would highly recommend to those that have never been, to please see this marvelous reproduction of art in live form. Second, this year for the first time we enjoyed the picnic area with family while watching a pretty good band play on stage. Since this was our first time experiencing the picnic, we would rate this by itself "excellent", and would do this again. We understand that this area has been renovated in the last year or so, but it was all new and nice to us. It was quite a refresher from the day's battle down on Laguna Beach between the alt-right and left. Give yourself at least two hours early arrival to find a nice picnic spot.

So, our review is strictly about this year's "Grand Tour" presentation after the picnic. The Pageant always has the main presentation of art in the first half. After the intermission, they switch gears to some other theme (this year it was "the Wild West", including the Buffalo (or was it Wild Bill?) Cody Show w/ Annie Oakley and the Indians. Of course, it always ends with the "Last Supper" (which this year we left early and didn't see). We did that to avoid the mad rush out of the entrance and to parking. We would recommend you stay if you are a first time visitor to really take in the finale of the "Last Supper".

The first half of the show was not so bad, but the art pieces seemed to be less than before and not as impressive. This time they had a gondola piece that was off stage and a little off-putting. The Cody presentation was more Hollywood/Disneyland than art and goes beyond the stage format. Granted, it probably is entertaining for families and children. That aside, it can be quite hokey and a little embarrassing.

I'm sure it didn't help that there was a constant noise distraction this night from the helicopters overhead due to the demonstrations in Laguna Beach. We might return and I never thought the day would come when we would say "might".

While I included photos, there are none of the actual presentation because they are not allowed. So, be forewarned.

We have attended The Pageant of the Masters every year, for several years l. I am not sure what changed? The whole production was horrible, very disorganized and amateur, messy production. The production consisted of crookedly placed photos on the screen, with no apparent theme . With high priced tickets and difficultly parking, we were expecting a beautiful show, as in we have experienced in the w. This show was nothing like we expected. It was horrible. Poorly done. And definitely not worth the ticket price and effort . Did we pay the high ticket price to view crookedly placed photos of fashion on a large blurry screen. The Last Supper, was a blurry crookedly placed photo misplaced on the screen! The whole production was painful to sit through, as we kept watching, hoping it would get better. It just got worse! HORRIBLE!!!

The Pageant of the Masters Live Art on Review is part of the Annual Laguna Beach Art Festival. It highlights what is perhaps the finest collection of new and established contemporary artists from around the world. But you don’t have to be an artist or even understand art to be impressed by this mesmerizing event.
For decades the Pageant has been drawing in crowds to see the magic and wonder of their creation. Living Breathing art. Paintings. Sculpture. All created at a human scale and done so with a level of artistry that defies the imagination and challenges perception.
There truly are no words to express this one of a kind event.
So if you have never been, are thinking about going, have put it off, or wondered if it is worth the effort and cost. Let me say without hesitation, don’t wait till next year, get your tickets now.

Advice for first time travels:
Parking is at a premium. Do your homework and know where you are going to park in advance. The POTM Website has links to the city’s Event Parking.
You are going to need a jacket. This is an open air arena at the bottom if a valley just blocks from the ocean. It gets cold at night, even on the hottest days.
Picnic baskets are welcome just follow the rules.
Food is available at the Art Festival but it is expensive.
Go early and enjoy the art and music at the Art Festival @ 1 to 2.5 hours is plenty of time but allow yourself 30 mins for parking and transport to the event.
The Pageant has no set run time but the show runs late into the evening @ 2.5 hours start to finish.

Plan ahead, Buy tickets well in advance. There are no bad seats. And take binoculars for every one.

Enjoy!

We try to see this as often as possible, it’s an amazing show! We have seen many of them, some are better than others, some don’t wow you as much. The theme changes from year to year so you never know what you are going to see and be excited by.

This year’s was a little short on the wow factor but when you see how they do it and what they present you are amazed all the same. Always worth the drive over from AZ to see it, such a fun night out!

Parking is a nightmare so Uber to the grounds if possible, it makes things much easier! Or get there super early and check out the festival first. There is also an art show inside you can wander through.

And you can eat inside or just get a glass of wine so make an evening of it!

It's pretty wonderful. There is a narrator & a storyline & lots of surprises. The outdoor venue is great, lots of interesting art to view & good food & great music (we saw Quatro Four) while you are waiting for the doors to open. Go!

By Karen P |

I was amazed at the talent and expertise of this pageant. The orchestra was a highlight in addition to the talented actors who perform the art. Truly a feast for the senses and well-named "Pageant."

We haven't come to this in several years so for my Birthday
Trip my husband treated the 3 of us to this. We were so looking
forward to it and talked it up to our son who was looking forward to this as were we.

I have to say, we had great seats, could see everything clearly, it
was a beautiful night, so all would have been perfect. About 45 minutes into it,our son was falling asleep, my husband & I were very disappointed at this event. Granted it has been 15 years since we saw it last. We expected some changes, but not like the ones we saw this evening.
There was more video being used to show the story with only
1-2 live performers in the painting. This went on for the rest
Of the night seeing more photos on the large screen with
live figures walking outside of the painting that was up on the screen. The largest disappointment to us was the Last Supper.
We remembered several live performers in the scene several
times that we have seen this before. This time there were none.
We noticed many patrons did not return after the intermission including our son. We remembered they would ask the actors to move before taking the scene off, then you can see how many there were, and where they were located, you could see yes or no where you thought.

Bottom line we will try to remember the way it was in many
years prior

For those who have never been here before they may be very
happy with this.

Suggest ticket purchase with box office and pick up at will call.
Saves you many dollars!

After going to Laguna Beach over the years we finally decided to check out the pageant of the masters! So glad we did! What an amazing show. It takes you a while to realize/believe those are really people in the paintings! I'm so glad they demonstrated how the paintings are put together, to give you a perspective of what goes on behind he scenes. I look forward to going again!

Fascinating to see life-size works of art on stage. More incredible to see who these recreations are done. Nice breeze blows through this small outdoor theatre. Parking can be difficult, so plan to arrive in plenty of time to park, walk to the theatre, view the art in the outdoor "lobby" and get into your seats before the show begins. You will want to see every second of the show.

This is our annual trip to Pageant of the Masters .... we have been attending the event for several years, and each year it is a special treat. We went to ‘Broadway by Amar Santana’ for dinner before the show and returned for dessert and coffee after. As always both the artwork viewing before the performance, and actual show are a real treat. We always especially look forward to the closing ‘Last Supper’ tableau which is so wonderfully executed. This year the theme was pure Orange County... fun. Can’t wait to be back in ‘19.

The Gala this year was just another fun performance of one of the greatest shows on earth. We started our evening game with a live intimate concert by Steve Tyrell ala fresco.
We them ate dinner under the stars with the stars ( local celebs) who come to join this fun evening in this wonderful art colony.
Best for last is watching but maybe not believing what your eyes are seeing, local talent framed in the works of maters looking like real life painting. If they didn’t show you show they did it, you wouldn’t believe it.

My lovely wife pictured with Joe from Criminal Minds and Dallas Rains, local TV weatherman

Thank you 85th Pageant

I Absolutely loved it. The variaty. The High class of artists and talent. Lots of different things to see and explore.

An unbelievable experience of art coming to life. A tremendous amount of care and detail goes into this presentation of famous works of art come to life. My second time there and I will certainly make it an annual pilgrimage from Arizona. Captured my attention for the entire 2 hours. Breathtaking, heart pounding depictions of art that make the mind smile.

By racornett |

This is one of the most amazing things to see. The live creation of art, including paintings, sculptures, even Valentine cards one year. It's well worth the cost of tickets.

By s a |

Full of outdoor art paintings. Plus a life art exhibit, real people inside a painting! Creative idea plus speaking of the history of laguna beach .wonderful! Dont miss it. You will love it.

By Specialk |

If you have never experienced live art, this is a show not to miss. This years Pageant is full of art history from all over Europe. In those days that is how someone was educated in the arts, they toured the continent to learn... the US was not part of the Grand Tour. It was a nice to have some of Americana included in this Grant Tour, to include Buffalo Bill, Annie Oakley and Dizzie Gillespie to represent us.

in case you did not know, the piece of art models are volunteers; two weeks on; two weeks off! Cheers to the dedicated bunch that is working this season.

Keep up the great work. BTW they remodeled the grounds, and it has LOTS of STEPS... although it's beautiful, the steps are the pits.

The Pageant of the Masters is famous picture recreated with people as the pieces good time to go your ticket gets you into the sawdust festival for free

By whickidd |

Have been attending for 14 years now and would be so sad to miss a year, everytime is different and exciting!

By Jean H |

If you love art, music and theater you will love this one of a kind program. Come early to enjoy the art show with A list artists. Meet them, and purchase amazing original art all summer long. Come for the live music, bring your own picnic, or eat on site. Terra the sit down restaurant was booked way out, so get that reservation when you order your tickets. Park in town and walk or take the city trolly for free. The show starts after sunset at 8;30, and you sit outside for a 90 minute mind blowing show. Bring seat pads, and binoculars- but if you don't they rent them there.

By Sarah S |

It is a difficult event to describe, because when you say that real people get dressed up and posed to look like famous paintings, it's sounds boring. But it is one of the most fascinating things I've ever experienced. The presentation combines narration, along with stunning visuals. My favorite part is when they show bits an pieces of the behind the scenes and how they create the life-size poses. Getting to see the people "break" out of the artwork is phenomenal. PLUS you get to wander through an entire out door art festival which includes live music and great food!

By sgec1105 |

The Laguna Beach, Pagent of the Masters was amazing, they take famous pictures and make them life size with real people in them, with each famous picture they reproduce, they tell a short story. Binoculars and warm clothes are a must for this amazing outdoor theater event. Come a bit earlier to look at the art show that is located at the entrance of the pageant. If you are an art lover, this event is a must do!

By Alan K |

First time seeing this. Just wonderful and amazing, the Grand Tour. A visit to Renaissance art with live people in the art. Truly amazing. One surprise after another. A place to go back to. Different show every year. Close by other art events.

By Diane A |

I've been to about 5 Pageant of the Masters over the past 15 years and I still enjoy going to see the show. This year's was the best as the history of the Pageant and Laguna Beach was presented in such a thoughtful and fun manner. I'll keep going back whenever I have the opportunity.

By John P |

We go every year. Each year is “different” and yet special. It is hard to describe the detail and talent that goes into each and every “painting” or “statue” presented. This year, there were so many different presentations. And the live orchestra deserves all the applause they get for making beautiful music to surround the people and the presentations. Don’t miss it!

By Cynthia S |

What a wonderful outdoor evening. It is amazing to sit and realize that these fabulous works of art have been recreated with such detail and beauty. This event is a must for anyone vacationing in the southern California area in the summer.

By zarielcreative |

I headed to the pageant for 6:00 pm in order to see the art and grab a bite to eat before the show. The open air gallery is lovely, with small artist stalls and some amazing work!

I was so impressed with the art area where you (and the kids) can do small projects for a donation fee. What a great idea!

The show is impressive and I particularly liked the works on the sides of the stage that were sculptures. I can't get over how so many people can stay so still in their poses.

You definitely want to spent the money and get to the front of the middle section. I was in row R (second to last of the middle) and felt I was about 20 rows too far away to comfortably see - even with binoculars.

This is totally something to see if you are in the Laguna Beach area but be warned the show goes to nearly 11 pm!

By Metcalfe01 |

I realize with the while Covid issue caused the cancellation ; However I bought $876 dollars worth of tickets for friends that I need to refund, and it wasn't until the cancellation that I realized they were not refundable. I did respond to an email where they agreed to the refund. However now their thicket line is disconnected and they are not answering emails. Could this be embezzlement?

By DLG0 |

That is the question you will hear murmured during the first 20 or so minutes of the performance. I must admit I too was skeptical until a behind the scenes demonstration showed just how much detail went into each work of art. The Pageant of the Masters should be on everyone's cultural bucket list.

By TrippieA |

Pageant of the Masters used to be one of our favorite summer activities. We went to see every couple of years and recommended it to many friends. We went again last night and what a shocking disappointment! There is a total new direction and the artistic nature and quality has been replaced by a school play of dancing characters etc. The little bit of what the Pageant used to be about is not worth paying for. My husband and I left after first act. Never again!

By rrkkjones |

This was my first time to go to the Pageant of the Masters. I did buy the tickets a tad late hence, I didn't get the seats I would have wished for (at least the price range I want). The tickets I bought were $50.00 each (Main Center, Row N). Our seats were great.

Note, while looking for tickets, I noticed that Goldstar and Groupon were selling discounted tickets, but they were selling tickets only for the side area (not center area - main tier side and director's tier). I think it was $28.00. Since it was my first time, I wanted center sears. Note, the main website seems to run promotions as well. There was a coupon discount during mother's day that I missed, and there was a discount today posted on FOAPOM website for this coming Sunday's show.

The one advantage of being seated on the right side area (facing the stage) or closer to the stage is that it is easier for you to leave when the show finished. (Pretty much, people exit from that side only - thus you have to wait for people ahead of you to leave.) Hence, for me, if I can get discounted tickets for seats on the side--particularly right side facing the stage, I wouldn't mind purchasing those tickets. Some of the art displays were presented on the sides rather than on the stage. My recommendation is to buy seats as far as the Main Tier only (center or sides). I think Director's tier will be a bit far.

Things to bring: Binoculars, jackets, and snacks.
Binoculars - my friend who regularly attends this event, highly recommended it. Glad we did bring binoculars. It substantially enhances your experience. You can rent binoculars at the place for $10 each/seat cusion $3.00 each. Blanket $8 for purchase.

It gets cold... bring a Jacket or blanket.

Going to buy snacks during intermission -- I don't think you would have enough time. So bring snacks and drinks with you. But you can always buy them before the show starts.

We parked at Lot 16. Paid I believe $7 for a whole day parking. There is a free trolley that will bring you to the theater and to downtown. (Free trolleys in the general area). This area where the festival is held is a nice area. If you are coming here, stay overnight or at least come early to enjoy the place. Nice beach, nice restaurant, and shopping areas.

We took the trolley to the downtown/beach area. Had some coffee and did some light shopping. From the beach we just walked to the theater. It is an easy walk.

When the show ended, we took the trolley back to the parking lot. By the time we exited, trolleys were all lined up ready to bring people to the parking lot. Very well organized. We reached the parking lot at 11:00 pm.

Brought my teenage son and girlfriend - they also enjoyed it.

This is a definite must do, and something that we are planning to do again next year and future years. But next time, we will stay overnight or come early in the morning.

We’d heard about Pageant of the Masters for several decades and finally had the opportunity to attend on a Monday night. In addition, the outdoor Art Festival and property was an amazing pre-event experience.
My wife and I were completely in awe of how well these works of art are recreated with live human beings. It’s truly worth every penny, even if purchasing through a ticket agency at an elevated cost. Be sure to experience this amazing pageant at least once in your lifetime!

By MinnesotaFamily2 |

This is an annual event in Laguna Beach. The actors on stage recreate masterpieces of painting and sculpture. We went many years ago. Still a wonderful production. Compared to the past, this year the story thread is better developed, but we missed the "reveal"--where the actors come out of the paintings. Tips: the breeze can be cool (so bring a light jacket), binoculars are nice, some brought seat cushions (but we don't think that's necessary). Food and drink available at "attraction pricing "

By Northern_Traveler00 |

First time for us at the Pageant and Art Show. We got discount (25% off) tix from the official site a couple days in advance. We were in the back for $40 or so each, PLUS TEN DOLLARS EACH PROCESSING, which is kind of cra&&y.

Bring Binoculars if you want to see the people in the art and you aren't up front. They do present dozens of famous and less famous works of art with local actors/models/volunteers taking the place of the figures in the works. If you are far away sometimes you can't tell what is live and what isn't as They Just Don't Move A Muscle. A couple pieces called for the actors to do a little moving and that was fun. Would be nice if they had a "how we do it" video you could watch and maybe a piece you could walk up to to see the tricks.

Show started at 8:30, intermission was at 9:40 and resumed at 9:55 and ended at 10:30. It gets a bit chilly there, so bring a jacket. The art show was well presented with many different genres, and most of the artists were there on a Friday night

By genny k |

If you like at this is a must see! I've been to the show twice now (every year is different) and have not been disappointed. I would recommend bringing or renting seat cushions and binoculars. It is an outdoor theater and the seats are hard. If you want to see the details binoculars are a must. But you can enjoy the show without them. They also allow picnic baskets (must fit under the seat) so you can bring your own snacks out a full dinner 😊

By Debbie H |

Hadn't been to a Pageant in several years. The art show area was spruced up nicely, rest rooms amble and nicely done, theatre seating fairly comfortable. They rent cushions, binoculars etc. but you can bring your own. The show format has changed, less art modeled and more action. To me that detracted from the pageants original intent to bring art alive with people. But I guess audiences need more 'action'.

By Emily W |

My frinds and I go at least once every summer. They have new themes every year. I have injoyed all I have see. Depending on the time of summer bring a light jacket case it can cool down at night.

By gomccall |

Get center back row Loge seating for the best view. This year's show was incredible adding an opera singer, more action and the Tissot paintings were incredibly well represented. I am very happy with the new and improved tableau vivant show. Bravo!!

By Rich379 |

Very disappointing. Left at intermission. Attended 2 years ago and loved it. The format change with singers and dancers and even a boat that moves across the stage seemed very cheesy. Go back to the original format of living art. It's great when they "take you behind the scenes" and show how a "painting " is constructed. It's also great when someone deliberately moves at the end of a scene. However in 2023 they turned the festival into sort of a variety show. Terrible overall. Go back to the original approach.

By Jim M |

This is absolutely stunning. Not great for little ones who may get bored, but the artistry and gorgeous tableaus are amazing. You can dine in town and walk over very easily. There is nothing like it!

By Lynne H |

For anyone traveling to the Laguna Beach area in July or August, this is a MUST SEE. It is magic set in a a mini canyon with bougainvillea and lots of greenery. The tickets are very reasonably priced ---- not a bad seat in the house --- you can get your tickets on the internet beginning in Feb [I think]. In addition to the magic, the grounds outside the venue have fabulous artists displaying gorgeous art work, jewelry and furniture. You couldn't ask for a better experience.

By Jedimasterkush |

This year I traveled in town to see my 4th Pageant of the Masters event. Even though it was the first time back since 2007 all the magic still remained. It is quite a thing that they do here every year and really everyone should experience this at least once in their lives. It is a different way to look at art and to more deeply appreciate all of the fine works on display in such a unique way year after year. Come early listen to music, grab a bite to eat and check out some local artists. Make plans for next year and buy tickets for Christmas for your loved ones when great seats are still available to the public. By the way the Sawdust festival which is on the same time of year across the street is something to come see also. Make a day and night of it.

We were very happy with the beautiful presentation of Artist's, technicians and full orchestra. So much work goes into this performance! Nice intermission with a nice outdoor theater setting.
We were somewhat disappointed that more people did Not come to life or step out of the paintings.
I was hopping that The Last Supper more folks would come to life and take a bow.
Never did happen. But a wonderful night under the stars.
Art display also nice.

My 3rd time attending this amazing show. Words cannot describe the experience. A huge outside amphitheater. Several stages all around. A story narrated about the great painters back to DaVinci. These paintings are brought to life by humans inserted into the framed paintings.
There is a real horse and canoe that moves across the stage. Annie Oakley shooting targets, buffalo bill, a huge British wrapped air balloon, Indians, marble famous sculptures, all depicted by humans that are painted, dressed and frozen in time. The positioning of their arms, hands, and legs is simply breathtaking.
No cameras allowed inside.
Beautiful local artists displays for purchase outside in the courtyard. A wine bar and food service also available in the courtyard.
It is worth it to pay a bit more for closer seats. The detail is mesmerizing. I sat in the third row on this visit

I had never been before and was looking forward to it. It was entertaining, but from what I heard they have partially abandoned their basic idea. I was told that they used to display the paintings and then the figures would move or walk out of the painting to show you where the figures were real people. With a couple of small exceptions, they do not do this anymore, You just guess and it is not nearly so dramatic as I imagined.
There was some additional entertainment that was OK, if perhaps a little PC directed. The orchestra was very good.
*
At the beginning they tell people not to take pictures but the jerk in front of us started doing it with his cell phone in the second half when I guess they could not throw him out at the intermission. It was very disruptive to the people behind him. At the least , I think the second half should also start with a warning.
*
*I would not bother going again, but if you have not been it is OK.

This is a must see to appreciate. Trying to explain it does not even come close to the wonderful beauty of this art. My fourth time and every time different.
Exhibits prior to the show are high end and not just anyone can par take in purchasing.

After a 2 year absence we returned to share the PoM with friends experiencing it for the first time. They were impressed! And we enjoyed it as well. However, we were disappointed that the usual demonstration of how each scene is staged was not included this year, especially after explaining to our friends how much this would add to the presentation.
The other highlight we missed was Massenet’s “Meditatation” from Thais that always accompanied the final scene of The Last Supper. The new song was nice but left us feeling unfulfilled. As the program’s signature piece, The Last Supper is a long standing tradition. Why not continue the tradition with the powerfully beautiful & evocative “Meditation”, that underscores the beauty of the art and leaves one contemplatively reflecting on that scene & the entire experience?

By skip B |

My family had been many times but they wanted the Dad to go. Reluctant I went. Cannot wait until next year to do it again. It is magic. Like nothing else.
Go and make plans to have dinner in town and then take a free bus to the outdoor theater.

Visiting friends and they suggested this. Paintings are recreated with people. This years theme was "Under the Sun" which encompasses all things California. It could have been titled, "We're Laguna Beach & California and this is how we got here." We enjoyed it. Some reviewers were saying it was different from past years, and we wouldn't know. But this show was well produced and uses a live orchestra to accompany the narrator. Once the "painting" is presented you have at least a full minute, if not more, to take it all in before they move on to the next presentation. Rent the binoculars. And go early to find parking. There is a large art festival going on as well. Two thumbs up.

By Roger H |

Full disclosure. My wife really liked it. I was nodding off before intermission. Maybe I was expecting more, but the overall production was a little to Disney for me and I am not sure how we started with a European Tour in 1780 and ended up with Buffalo Bill.

By jland0001 |

This event is a must. The real-life portraits are so real and done so well, you will think you are actually viewing art. the art show before is a good event as well

By EvelinaWanderlust |

We took our youngest son, and we loved it. We had a great time. Just wished I had taken seats closer to the stage for a better view. But more important, the presentation and work they all put together is out of this world...not sure of any other experience like this nearby. We were excited and very glad we were there.

By Bryce J |

Program was fantastic. Unfortunately, 5 women (30 ish) behind us were talking loud, cat calling and fingers in mouth dog whistling during event. It truly hurt our ears. I guess they thought the event was a stripper "Thunder Down Under" show. I think they were inebriated. We will go again next year and hopefully have respectful neighbors.

By rlaikin |

I had heard a lot about the pageant from friends of mine in LA. None of them had been recently but all recommended it. The idea of "live models" in classic paintings was something I certainly had never seen.
The seating was VERY crushed. I am quite large and the pleasant lady next to me remarked that she felt she was sitting on my lap.
Being originally from England the notion of the evening featuring "the Grand Tour" of a young man of substance traveling through Europe, was of great interest. The narration was in perfect English and followed an interesting line.
There were several surprises around the amphitheater which kept our interest. But in the second half it changed to the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show, complete with "BB" on horseback , Annie Oakley etc. no real connection to the Grand Tour.
Strangely, the event then returned to the end of the European tour. A bit disjointed.
I guess anyone who likes a night out ought to go once: I may return in the 2020's.

Attended during The Festival of Arts. Wonderful evening and the Pageant of the Masters a must see. It’s a good idea to bring binoculars.

By xxtrasafe |

We have been going every year for the last 13 years. We love sitting outside in the evening and feeling that cool coastal breeze come in. The announcers voice is great and everyone should experience this at least once in your lifetime. You will believe what you are seeing,, enough said.

Tips: bring warm clothes, binoculars, seat cushions and arrive with plenty of time to find parking.

By Jayden F |

We bought tickets approximately three weeks before the show from PageantTickets.net as the box office was already sold out of good center main seats on the Saturday night we wanted, we were able to find third row center main level from this company. Service was excellent, pricing better than stubhub (after all the check out fees) and they shipped the tickets immediately, and followed up to make sure we enjoyed the show. I would highly recommend them. Excellent show, a must see!

By HappyJana |

I wish we had paid for better seats. This is definitely a bucket-list worthy event- MUST SEE. Amazing. Hard to describe and do it justice.

By JenJen1865 |

My first time and I loved it!! The production of this show was so much more than I expected. The cast and crew did a fantastic job. The orchestra was so enjoyable. Go early to check out the artwork, bring binoculars, a seat cushion, blanket and no bottles. If you want to bring in drinks put them in a travel mug. You may bring in food too. No pictures allowed. Don't miss it!!!

By Fuzzy K |

I have seen Pageant with my family for five or six years in a row. You can explain to people that the Pageant recreates famous art work using live models, but they can't really understand it until they see it.

The orchestra is always terrific as is the narration. Each year there is a different theme with different works of art, except that it always ends with The Last Supper.

Parking can be difficult as the near lots fill up quickly. But there is a not-too-remote parking location with shuttle.

It's good to arrive early because there is a big art show on the Festival grounds. There are also two other arts & crafts fairs in short walking distance. There is usually a live music performance before the show.

There is food on site, but I recommend that you come early and check out any of the number of restaurants in the area.

By Nina W |

It is an annual event for a group of friends. We were very sad that last year was cancelled but we were back this year and it was amazing as usual. It was particularly meaningful this year as it celebrated MADE in AMERICA and featured many diverse artists from the beginning our our history!

By Kitleyash |

We've been to the Pageant a dozen times over the years and we are still amazed at the quality of the presentation...and to think it is primarily a volunteer cast. Really not a bad seat in the house but binoculars are a must if you're in the back...but it's still an amazing show

By Pam I |

THE most unique presentation of art in human form. Great works of art are depicted on stage... but the figures in the works of art are people striking the pose! Each year's theme is different and many mediums are represented. My favorites are always the sculptures. Advice: take binoculars!!!!! And a seat cushion. Cough up the cash and sit in the Center Loge section. And you might need a light jacket, as the evenings by the ocean can be chilly.

By NormKeith |

For years I have wanted to go to the Pageant of the Masters and for some reason I always found out about it after it saw over. I received a phone call from friends a said they had two extra tickets would we like to go. Would we, yes indeed. Oh my goodness what a fantastic evening it was everything I expected and more. Every frame, every statue, all the narrative and story as well as the live moving production and live orchestra was amazing. If you are not familiar with the Pageant it is a gallery of famous paintings and statues using live people. It amazes me how they are able to stay still for so long. Taken from their program nearly 500 people donate their time totaling over 60,000 hour to make to make this production what it is.

By elosie |

The Pageant of the Masters program is one of a kind. It has become a tradition for many people who seem to follow the show year after year. Without giving away all of its secrets it has history and significance in the art world and hits a very high note with visual effect, lighting, great make-up and customs and very creative set design. There is a full orchestra beneath the stage and you sit in a very open bowl under the stars. If you ever been to the Hollywood Bowl it has a similar appeal when the lights go down. Make sure to bring warm clothes, even a blanket and binoculars, because its usually a bit chilly or damp when the sun sets. The lights go on and the show opens. There is a story line and lots of humor but art pieces come alive and are recreated before your eyes.

By Chris C |

Have been to the show for years and years and it has always been spectacular.
In 2023 however, it was the absolute worst performance I've ever attended. No "life" to the show. No movement after they've "set". An utter waste of performance space and stage work talent that provided am underperformed art exhibit.

By donnademar |

I have attended many years ago and then started going each year for the last 5 or 6 years! I love this event. It amazes me.

By Brenda B |

This was a once in a lifetime visit for us as we are from Ohio. We were not sure how we would enjoy it since we are not big “art” people but boy were we wrong! We enjoyed it very much and what a lovely outdoor setting. You really can’t believe how good it is. Really enjoyed it but the highlight was the finale “The Last Supper”. Very enjoyable and highly recommended!

By Jim |

The presentation has changed from my last visit, which I very much enjoyed. This had singing and dancing and was not that entertaining. My wife and I left at intermission. Most people stayed, but we were not the only ones leaving early.

By walkero2016 |

Been the second time to the Pageant of the Masters and it did not disappoint! The theme, “Under the Sun”, was so fitting for Southern California-exemplified the history and lifestyle of SoCal! It was a wonderful experience!

By Susie A |

This was my second time to the pageant - both times have been amazing! It is incredible to think about how much time these performers and volunteers put in to making this a one of a kind experience.

Make sure and plan your outing so that you can spend time perusing the art show on the grounds before going into the amphitheater - the artists that are selected to display their art are very deserving of the opportunity.

Tip: make sure and take a wrap in case it gets cool in the evening during the show.

By Charles S |

Hard to believe what you are seeing. The presentations appear to be a painted picture and even with opera glasses you couldn’t tell it was populated with real people. Then they set up a picture in front of the audience so you could see how they did it and it became more impressive

By Trek-Always |

We had not heard of this having always lived in the East. Some CA friends invited us during a visit, and it was wonderful. Hard to explain but terrific in person.

The food, music, and exhibits ahead of the performance are also first class.

This is a must-do. Now we will need an excuse to visit again so as to attend future performances!

If this review is helpful then please indicate so below.

We just experienced the Pageant again. We view it every few years.

This year was the best ever focusing on the city of Laguna Beach and its past history. Not only was it educational, but the paintings which memoralized Laguna were fabulous. They didn't do a lot of the old masters, but performed a lot of great paints and some bronze sculptures. It is also narrated and accompanied by appropriate music. This is a great experience for any age family member, except maybe a crying baby.

If you've never been it's a reenactment of oil paintings, but live people are in the paintings. You would never know this. They do show how the paintings are set up.

No photography is allowed.

If you'e never been you need to go this year or next.

By Bob B |

We attend each year & invite friends from around the company to join us. This unique art exposition brings live depictions of well-known paintings which include characters. It's one of the events you just have to see to understand. The event takes place on the grounds of the annual Festival of the Arts. The show starts just after dark and last 90+ minutes. You can't miss with this which started July 5th and goes to early September. Tickets available online.

This annual pageant , where volunteers recreate famous works of art, is a must-see! I'd recommend you take binoculars (no picture taking allowed

I purchased 17 tickets for The pageant of the Masters this season. That was done months ago. since the covid-19 virus it's been impossible to get customer service from this organization. I've sent several letters to them about getting a refund for my group.the first few letters got no response at all. Then I got a letter telling me how short-staffed and busy they were. A month after the cancellation was announced I sent them another letter requesting a refund. With no response. I recently received a letter from the president David Perry basically stating the same thing I've heard in the past. They're working as quickly as on processing refunds. I've been waiting for a refund 3 months now and that is absolutely unacceptable. Today I have sent them six emails and still no results. I have a responsibility for my group just as the pageant of the Masters has a responsibility to me as a customer. Up to now they are totally shirking their responsibility. I have asked several times for someone to just pick up a phone and give me a call but no response. I am absolutely convinced that this group has no regard for its patrons or members. Even those of us who've been attending for years.I have lost all faith in this organization's management and I will never attend an event at this venue again.I will also never have a positive word to say about anyting associated with the pageant of Masters. You have definitely showed your true colors.

Longtime summer event in So Cal that draws viewers of the art work that comes to life! Great show with a live orchestra and very talented performers who stay still in the painting until it's time to make the reveal.

By MartyandJim |

We go to the Pageant every summer. The production is excellent and there is always a new twist every year. Snack bar is mediocre but you can probably find something you like. Only complaint is the seating. The seats are metal old-style theatre seats which is ok since the Pageant is outdoors. The problem is they are too small so you’re elbow to elbow with your neighbor, and you have to stand up to let someone pass.

By citygirltravels |

I’ve seen this a couple of times before 2020 and I read the negative reviews from this season 2022 and would completely disagree with those reviews. It was just as good if not better than the previous years. I took two friends and both were wowed just like the first time I saw It . This show is must see and if you are Laguna Beach DO NOT miss It . * please get the binoculars, It makes the experience better even if you get close seats.

By TheRTWTraveler |

Twenty plus years ago I saw Pageant the masters and was highly impressed. I remember myself audibly saying things like “oh my GOD” and “wow”. My recent experience left me thinking who destroyed the brilliant show that was created so many years ago? Currently you see the artwork made up of human beings and are hardly able to discern that it’s not just an enlarged piece of artwork. They used to show you the scene with two types of lighting, one would let you see the three dimensional human beings in the scene and then the second amazing transformation would occur when the lights would switch and the other lighting flattened the image out and made it look like a picture or painting. I was so excited to bring my girlfriend who had never seen pageant of the masters, and wanted her to have the experience I had many years ago. Unless things change, I will never go to see the show again.

By James Weaver |

The premise of the night was a couple, possibly H.G. Wells himself use the Time Machine to visit artists and their art throughout the centuries. Forward and reverse through time they traveled. At one point coming face to face with another time traveler, Marty McFly and his Deloran. This is not the old Pageant of the Masters, where no movement was expected for the one minute of the piece being shown. Movement and spoken words, song and dance are nearly in every minute of the Program. As I said to the others with us, I am glad we went for the good seats. If you are planning on attending this year or next, get the best (Closest) seats to the stage you can, stretch the budget. It is worth it. Sitting far up in the Irvine Bowl, you loose sight lines. Bring or rent binoculars otherwise.

By Kurt1966 |

The closer you sit in the stadium the better! otherwise, bring binoculars. A one of a kind event that's been around for decades. Pretty cool!

By NoblesseOrBleach |

A different type of show -- as another reviewer said, it helps to like art to enjoy the Pageant. A movie I saw recently about a rags to riches business owner had his children saying to be more popular there should be more moving parts -- totally agree for this show as well. It's quite impressive the amount of effort that goes into the production and the long history behind its evolution and community involvement, but it's a bit long and the seats are plain metal, stadium-style seats with no cushioning unless you bring your own. Pay the highest amount you're comfortable with (some discounts are on the main website if you wait 1-3 days in advance), bring binoculars if you're seated further away. Expect to park further away for the most economic parking (we parked in public parking lot #13, covered spaces at the bottom of the steepest hill I've seen in southern California -- less than a 10 minute walk and 1/2 to 1/4 the price of closer lots -- was just $5 for the whole day on the weekend). The other art festivals are smaller, but worth a visit (the artists seemed a lot more accessible as well). Budget 2-3 hours in advance for the other festivals. Sawdust has discount coupons on their website and Art A Fair is free with Pageant tickets (as is Festival of the Arts for the whole season)!

By David W |

I thoroughly enjoyed my day in Laguna Beach but my expectations where probably greater than my reality. I highly recommend the Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters along with excellent dining and a beautiful walk on the beach. A couple warnings, I attempted to order tickets a month plus in advance and found nothing available except through re-sellers. I wanted good seats which ended up being third row main section, not front section. I paid on StubHub $143.63 per ticket plus a $46.07 service fee per ticket or $379. for tickets which cost $50 direct from FAOPOM. Yes, I felt taken.
We had an excellent casual pub style dinner at the White House. When I called for reservations the gentleman who answered the phone couldn't have been more hospitable. We found free parking on the street by the school as opposed to many lots which charge up to $30. There are free trolleys if a good walk is a concern.

By Baltimore48 |

This year's production was unique in that it featured the history of Laguna Beach in its paintings. If you haven't been, the venue offers recreations of classical works of art using live actors. It is remarkable to see in that you absolutely cannot tell that the paintings are 'live'. It is all accompanied by a narration and music. For the price of the Pageant you also get to attend the art show. A very worthwhile evening!

By geraldwm2014 |

"On each evening of the Festival of Arts summer schedule, ticket holders are amazed and enchanted by ninety minutes of tableaux vivants (living pictures), incredibly faithful recreations of classical and contemporary works of art, with real people (all volunteers) posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original pieces." There's nothing else like it and you must see it to understand how amazing it is!

By Tracy B |

I have come year after year bringing family and friends. They have always been thoroughly impressed. This is one of the most enjoyable and unique art entertainment theater shows that you will ever see. The talent is beyond belief, especially knowing that almost all of it is done by volunteers. This has afforded Laguna Beach it's art school and many many other things related to the art World here. You will not be disappointed.

By Dee S |

I have wanted to see the Pageant of the Masters for over 40 years but things never fell into place until a friend organized us in connection with Day Tripper who provided the transportation, tickets and snacks. They need a great review of their own! I was impressed with how the pageant organizers allowed the audience to get a glimpse of how everything is staged. I loved watching the characters get into place, especially the finale, the Lord's Supper. This is definitely worth the effort. The weather could not have been more perfect. Be sure to make a reservation for the large outdoor restaurant to start your evening. It was a great night and experience to share with friends and family.

By DorisV660 |

I didn't know what to expect from this evening. It was all very beautiful. However, l was surprised how many people there were and parking was really painful.

By kbsartori |

Arrive early (5:30) & bring your own or buy wine w/ dinner or snacks as you sit & listen to famous musicians while waiting for the Pageant of the Masters to begin at 8:30. Meander through amazing art displays too as you sip your wine. When the Pageant doors open you’re in for an amazing extravaganza of live art through the ages, accompanied by themed video & an amazing orchestra. Famous paintings are depicted using live human models who pose so still you’ll never know they’re alive! (Be sure to bring your binoculars to enjoy every detail!) This Pageant is truly unique—you’ll never see anything like it anywhere but at Laguna Beach, California!

By ElmoSanDiego |

Magical. This time I bought tickets off a reduced ticket site and they were way up but in the middle and they were great. Bring binoculars but I still saw everything clearly. Two years ago I was down a section and paid three times the amount and didn't see as well. Be prepared---- tickets are expensive! The show is wonderful. I explained it to my friend that it is like a Power Point presentation and it slides from presentation to presentation. It is like nothing you have seen before.

By dontravelenuf |

this was one of the most fascinating shows I've ever seen! Live art at its best!
I took my teenage grandchildren, and they too enjoyed it.
highly recommend.

By Denise B |

A 90 minute show of “living pictures” under the stars and in the cool evening ocean air in the Irvine Bowl is always a summertime pleasure. Check their website for seats that are 25-50 percent off. Every seat in this theater is a good seat. This pageant is well known for its uniqueness. What you are viewing are re-creations of works of art with real volunteers posing (and not moving) for 90 seconds to depict those individuals in the original works. This year, the first half of the show, before intermission, we learn, depicted thru art, about this wonderful town of Laguna and how it rose up through the centuries to what it is known for today—surfing and art. The most amazing piece depicted was the bronze sculpture, Ultimate Challenge by Edmund Shumpert which is located in Huntington Beach. Right before intermission, a theatrical rendition of surfing USA is performed along with beach balls tossed into the audience. Fun for some—cheesy for others. Upon returning to our seats, we were treated to re-creations of art done by Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin, John Singer Sargent, and of course, The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci.

The free, pre-pageant nightly music event is from 5:30-7:30 and held outside of the theater but on the same grounds. Different genres each evening. However, this year you have to pay to reserve a chair at a table ($20 to $35). Otherwise, you can sit along the wall or on the fake grass along the back. Don't bring a blanket to sit on the grass—that is against the “ house rules”. A walk around the outlying artist displays is always interesting along with the free “do it yourself” art events. Your purchased pageant ticket stub will get you into these events FREE for the rest of the pageant season.

Undescribable. You can try to tell people what this is but honestly they won’t understand it. Every summer Laguna Beach puts on this magnificent show. Don’t miss it. Art comes to life.

By chris92651 |

There is nothing else like this in the world. Living, breathing art made before your eyes with sets, makeup, costumes and a trick with lighting.
If you are in Laguna during festival season this is a must see for you bucket list.

By Cristina C |

If you’ve never experienced Laguna’s iconic Pageant of the Masters, you will be blown away. It’s so completely different and so realistic that it’s almost impossible to believe that you’re looking at actual human beings and not paintings! I can’t recommend it highly enough.

By travelshooter71 |

They really stepped up the performance this year...Impressed with how organized the place is...as much as I like a drink and offering of one...Too many people had way too many

By Carina Cristiano |

Although the Pageant of the Masters, is a must see, I enjoy the art display show best. It is wonderful to learn about the art time periods and history through the show, but truly I can say, the breaks in between to go see the artists featured is amazing.

They also have a Sawdust Festival across the street and in conjunction with the show time season.

My understanding is that all the artists must live within the local community so if you fall in love with a piece, you can continue to see updates by your favorite local artists.

I think that is pretty cool. This venue is steps away from one of my favorite beaches in California as well as some really great eateries. If in So California during the summer, do try to put this on your bucket list. More for adults than children.

I write this review with an admitted bias. My mother, June, began as Don Williamson’s assistant and eventually became Casting Director. Myself and 3 siblings were cast in the show from 1968 and on for many years. My memories are priceless. I attended the Pageant this past weekend full of excitement. Great memories came back as I entered the grounds. Wandering the Festival grounds, exploring the bowl, backstage, urging Thurl Ravenscroft to say “They’re great”! for the umpeenth time. I wanted to love the show, truly. But, the “live action” so diminishes the classy aspect of it. I appreciated the history of Laguna, but this is and was created as the Pageant of the MASTERS. No Masters until the second half. And then, only 3. I’m sad that apparently the Director et al, felt the need to make some cheap, hokey version of what it once was. If you want to see a unique, funky kind of show you may like it. But, Pageant of the Masters it is not. Don Williamson would be sad.

By Phil A |

Unbelievable, was totally amazed. Plus Laguna Beach runs a free trolly service to and from the Pageant to all over the area. So, we left the car in the hotel parking lot for our entire stay and enjoyed exploring the Pageant and town without the hassle to fighting traffic.

By AliaImam |

The show is absolutely amazing !!
I loved the choice of the paintings, the lighting and the music. Loved the part where they explained how those paintings are produced and come to life.

By Luana L |

Art, history, fun, friendship, juried crafts... its all there! Tips: get a pillow to sit on, bring a blanket, arrive early to shop both inside and outside of the event (you can shop in both the other craft area down the street and the local stores.

By Suanne S |

Canvasses alive with people?? A full rich orchestra? A history lesson to boot? Outdoors on a balmy night with others equally enraptured and NO CELLPHONES IN YOUR FACE?! It must be the Pageant of the Masters. It is so much a part of the California identity and culture, so unique and compelling..intrinsically linked to the remarkable Sawdust Festival, an extraordinary summer adventure. I encourage you to read about it, talk to someone who's been & do yourself a favor...go once. Just once. You'll be so glad you did.

By Kelly R |

Pageant of the Masters is an unique event. Human recreate the paintings of renown Artists. This is the third time we go and it is always wonderful. The only "But" I may say is that between them, there is a long time to wait. Never the less - it is an experience.

By Christy G |

If there's one thing that should be on everyones bucket list it is the Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach. This show is always spectacular and the music is beautiful. It is always changing and never disappointing. I am still mesmerized by the talent and work that goes into the performance, from the paintings chosen and the participants on stage all well as those in the audience and on the sides of the ampitheatre. It is easy to get lost in the way life is breathed into the statues and paintings presented. Someone reviewed that they were in row J and bored. We were also in Row J on the right side on opening night and they were awesome seats! Don't miss the art exhibits before and after the show. An enchanting evening you won't soon forget!

By ebonyinkspot |

A must see! Absolutely amazing transformation of “actors” into works of art. Different theme every year. Sit up front and see if you can see the actors move..

By Allan S |

This is a summer-long event that changes every year, and basically is a series of twenty or so tableaus that depict famous paintings, sculpture and scenes using live actors/models as the art subjects. Through lighting, makeup, and inventive stagecraft, the experience is impressive and sometimes outstanding. There is also a show of very talented local artists, food and music.

By bernicone |

This was the fifteenth year that I have attended the Pageant and still amazed at how much your eyes can play tricks on you with the manipulation of light. Over all it was still great, though I didn't care as much with the theme of the first half. Other years they have portrayed works of the master painters through out, but this year they featured works connected with Laguna Beach in the first half and some masters in the second half. As usual, the last portrayal was that of The Last Supper, which seemed to be exceptionally done this year with a look at the actors from the rear before rotating the set-up to see the front of the painting.

By Su25bag |

Forget the circus, this is the greatest show on earth. Fabulous music, incredible sets and a unique approach that cannot be seen anyplace else. The grounds are beautiful and the art in Laguna makes the entire experience worth a trip from anyplace. Bring a sweater. It really cools off after the sun goes down. Blankets for sale if you need one.

By Kirsten T |

I've been to see the pagent of the masters many times. This is an experience that is difficult to capture and describe. You sit out under the stars, you listen to beautiful music, and pieces of art are displayed that then come to life. It is unbelieveable what they do with costume, makeup and lighting. I highly recommend getting tickets early as this sells out.

By gmgOc |

They changed the Pageant this year making it much more entertaining. In the past my favorite part was when they showed you how they put the parts of the painting together They would only do this once a show. To be honest, I do go to the Pageant every other year but try to get out of it because I found it a bit boring. Not this year. They put many of the pictures together in front of you, had some live characters and music. You definitely appreciate the pieces more when you see how it goes together. I went with another couple from Orange County who hadn't been to the Pageant in 10 years. They found this year so entertaining, they returned later in the season with friends. I hope they continue with this model in the future

Wow! Pageant of the Masters is totally awesome! I remember when I was younger, my mom went to Pageant and I asked her what it was like. She said, "I can't explain it." That's an understatement. It's like a mix of art, a narrative, a little opera, a live orchestra, a gondola and a horse! I'm serious! I highly recommend going if you enjoy new things, art, an evening out in perfect weather, and or any combination of the above. Did I say that people are art? It's incredible.
I will also add that prior to the production you can enjoy a picnic lunch on the lawn with live music, peruse the excellent art, and speak to the nicest artists! Very high end artwork for sale, and all of it quite beautiful. Lovely venue that I heard had been remodeled recently and easy access via trolley from the parking lot. (Parking cost $5 paid at a kiosk machine).

We have been to the Pageant several times. The show was unique and interesting. The artwork area was wonderful. There is fast food and an outdoor restaurant. There is a band and plenty of tables and chairs outside. There is an orchestra for the show.

You MUST SEE Festival of Art of Laguna Beach CELEBRATING ITS 90th year among the finest Juried Art shows in the United States.

Laguna's phenomenal two months of art shows and the stunning Pageant of the Masters is now open. If you visit southern California don't miss the festival it is epic. While in Laguna the best dinning includes Terra on the festival grounds, Sapphire and Lumberyard. Use the Trolly to get around town. Park just out of down town and save your money for fun.

This was my 3rd visit and I recommend this wonderful experience to all. You can google this event but nothing can prepare you for the presentation of master painting you will see in this unique style. It will become an annual event. Some tips are:
1. Go early and have dinner at Alissa’s. Parking in town or the Pageant lot is easy even with crowds.
2. Go an hour early and peruse the wonderful exhibit and sale of local art before the show.
3. Take water as it is outrageously expensive, $5.00 a bottled.
4. There are restaurants inside the theatre, but pricey. Might as well get a great meal in the village.
5. No photography equipment. They are serious about this.
6. You don’t need the most expensive tickets as the viewing is good in all seats. However, binoculars are good even if close to view the details.
7. If you come to the show from the south, PCH (the coast hey fir you non natives) is a good choice when exiting. The Toll Road is also good but that can back up as most people use that.
8. Bring a jacket, yes it is California, because you are in the coast and the show gets over at 11:00 PM. It gets chilly!
I’m sure you will enjoy the show and make it an annual event. I think it runs Tues thru Sunday most of August into September, check this on the web where you buy your tickets. Also, be sure to get your will call tickets outside before entering. Enjoy snd see you next year!

By Andrew L |

Be prepared to be blown away the first time you experience this event! I have been attending annually for over 30 years and I have brought many "first timers" and the response is always the same; "oh my god"! Tickets are difficult to get but certainly worth the effort. Come earlier in the day and enjoy the art show, it is amazing too.

My wife drug me to one of these shows about 12 years ago. We have been going ever since, I am still in awe every time. The transformation of people into works of art is pretty dang amazing. Tips, go early, park your car, walk around town, get something to eat or go to the park area with your own snacks and drinks (Yes they will allow you to bring wine into the venue) Bring binoculars, bring a seat cushion if your but can't stand sitting for a long time, check the temps and bring a blanket or light jacket as it can get chilly. Get LOGE tickets if you can afford them, don't sit in the first three or 4 rows as it's too close to appreciate the art on stage at that range and you will miss some things that happen on the sides of the stage. Don't show up late and try to find your seats, it will frustrate you and really irritate those who have to be interrupted in the opening moments of this great show.

By Tricia F |

We attended the closing show of summer 2018 and we were not disappointed in the least bit. Our seats were in the main section, center row L seats 20,22. Very good location that didn’t break the bank. We brought binoculars to really see the detail. Also didn’t need a jacket but a light sweater was comfortable once the sun went down. It was a spectacular night.

This year's Pageant of the Masters focuses on Laguna Beach--it is, after all, the 85th Pageant and the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Laguna Art Museum. Each year the creators of the Pageant bring in something new--this year, there is historical vignette getting you in the mood at the start, and then they focus on the oldest known Laguna history, the Native Americans who occupied Laguna 5000 years ago.

The Spanish then arrive, and you see art from that period. This continues through today, when you have the chance (at the start of the break between the first act and the second) to go to a "beach party" that includes skateboarders (very talented) and local kids dancing and having a great time.

As always, of course, the focus is on the art--plein aire painting is a Laguna tradition, and the plein aire painters get their due. Surf's up in several of the paintings and sculptures, and we have time for a patriotic moment with Raising the Flag at Iwo Jima.

There truly is something for everyone in this show--from young kids (I suggest age 6 as a low end cut off) to teens (the surfing is super) to those who only remember the place they grew up (wishing, after this show, that that place had been Laguna!)

Of course the finale is The Last Supper.

**Do I need binoculars? If you are in the Loge (front set of seats going back about 20 rows) or the first half of the Main Tier (through about row G) I do not believe binoculars are needed and may actually detract from the show. Further back (you really should have bought betters seats if you could get them), binoculars are going to be useful.
••How do I dress? Warmly--dress in layers so that if it is cold you will be warm, and if it is warm you can peel down. Every night is different, but adapting to that is the difference between a great experience and one that is awful.
**When should I arrive? Early--there is great music and a wonderful picnic area (bring your food and wine--you can have a great time). Walk around and enjoy the art--it's for sale, but there is no pressure to buy--looking is a great sport.
**How long does it last? The show starts at 8:30; first break occurs about 9:45; and the show ends at 10:30.
**That recorded music sure sounded great! Sorry, you just listened to a live and very talented orchestra, and the announcer announces live every night.
**I'm going to get a lot of pictures to remember this! DON'T. It's not only against the rules, but they are (appropriately) aggressive at enforcing this.
**Come on, those aren't real people in the pictures! Wait until about picture 8, when they build it for you. You will understand the magic.
**I'm going to get really close parking! Probably not. There is a really good set of shuttle busses in Laguna, and lots of (relatively inexpensive) parking. Your chances of finding a "really close" parking spot is about as good as your chance of winning the lottery. It happens, but not very often. Your chance of getting adequate parking and taking a shuttle bus is 100 percent.
••I'm handicapped--I need a seat for my wheel chair. They have them. Call in advance (you want row MW).
••My seats are 17 and 19. But I want to sit with my partner! Odd seats are on one side of the midline of the theater, evens on the other. You are next to your partner with adjacent odd or even numbers.

By Barbara M |

Impossible to really describe the beauty! For about an hour and a half (one intermission) you are in awe of how they can possibly do this. So much fun. Bring binoculars and come early to park (there's a lot directly across the entrance but it fills up quickly). They have a wonderful restaurant Terra which was delightful. I had a vegetarian Tuscan Primavera which was outstanding. It was well worth a cross country trip!

The worst performance I have ever paid to see. Fake settings of famous masterpieces and campy bad music.

By tkttoride |

i have attended many performances of Pageant of the Masters over the years and was looking forward to 2017's take on "The Grand Tour." While I fully understand why those who are new to the experience enjoyed the show, for some of us old timers, it was baffling and disappointing. In the past the Pageant was predictable - a series of artworks were gorgeously recreated on stage, prefaced by expert narration, and set to live music. At some point in the show, the audience was given a narrated peek at how one of the pieces was put together. It was always lovely. This year the works of art often took a back seat to actors acting out a thin uninspiring storyline which became a bit of a mess. This show doesn't need a live horse, a gondola, people gyrating on hillsides, or opera singers. The art should be enough. Go, enjoy, but beware that you will not see the traditional Pageant as it was presented for many years. This is a new, but not necessarily improved, version.

Our whole group thoroughly enjoyed this! It’s absolutely incredible what these volunteer performers can do! Dress for a chilly evening and get ready for an amazing show!

Had a Amazing time.. The show was Fabulous. The detail in the art they replicate with people it's just incredible Would like to go and see it again.

The Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach is a wonderful way to spend a day and evening or just a part of the day.
The Art Fair is unique, but the Pageant Show is truly original, unique and full of surprises.
It is art that comes to life, and you must see it to believe it. It is a wonderfully produced show with music and a great way to become "art enriched".
Before the show(which is in the evening), you could dine at the Pageant restaurant on the grounds. It is outdoors and the food and service is excellent.

By Carly1Esq |

This Summer was the third time that I have seen the Pageant. The first time was the best... really extraordinary, surprising and original ! After your first visit you will want to return to see it again and introduce a friend to the experience.
Get close to the stage seats so that you can see the paintings and sculpture up close.
Watch to see if their eyes blink !
Its an extraordinary evening that has been produced for the last 85 years !

By Pabtravels |

I enjoyed the Pageant. I expected the art to be presented and then the real
People posed to step out to reveal what otherwise appeared to be part of the large painting of a specific artist. However there was just a bit of that in this years. I was part of s group many of which have gone for as many as 35 years -some at least 2 and others numbers in between. Many missed that more traditional vignette and did not care for the movement that has been introduced in ways. However the PR person spoke with us and towards capturing younger audience and given the demand of coming up with fresher ideas each year movement appears to be a new feature
The live orchestra was wonderful.

Worth my time. I am not a big collector of fine art and jewelry at this stage of my life so had too much time to kill between dinner at Tivoli.
But it was a good dinner. Not exceptional but it's not a permanent restaurant just during Pageant otherwise used for special events.

By Vernon E |

Hard to believe it was real people imposed into the art works! wonderful outdo ambiance. Great entertainment!

By lynnetravels2017 |

This was our first time going to the pageant and we loved it! It was an terrific experience. It is a must see and we are definitely going back! Go early and view all the incredible art.

By jhuckestein |

Tickets are a little pricey. So we were a little further back than desired. Bring binoculars to see the details as they are amazing. Definitely a bucket list, totally a real work of art, live.
Don’t miss this.

By susan J |

A truly unique 90 minute show of music, story and tableaux comprised of living models embedded in famous works of art. Famous artists from every period are included. You will be truly amazed and delighted. New show grounds include an art show by very accomplished artists in every media and a junior art exhibit for artists pre-K to 12th grade. Stunning work by very young artists.
A stunning show in every respect except the food. Eat before you get here.
Pay to park or walk 1/4 mile from town trolley depot.
No ASL devices. Reserve text tablet & read the show in advance. its all they have.

By Stephanie G |

With so many glowing reviews, I'll just take a couple minutes and give tips to the 'uninitiated.' If you spring for the Loge seats, I'd suggest Row E or a bit higher because there are mini stages on both right and left sides and you won't have to crane your neck so far to see them. Food at the Tivoli Terrace was excellent. Make time to see all the art and talk with the artists (and buy something!). They are juried in and are happy to describe their work. Highly recommend seat cushions & binoculars, available onsite. No photos or videos allowed during the show.

By L.L. |

The only reason I'm giving this rating is the restaurant experience we had at the pageant. Do NOT eat at the restaurant on the grounds of the pageant. It was by far the worst restaurant experience we had while we were visiting S California. Service--0, Food--1, Price--0. We were served EXPIRED (by 7 months) cans of coke (2 times!) When the "good" coke finally came out, those who ordered it were done with their meal. Two in our party ordered Ceviche, and when they came out, they were 2 different sizes! Three people of the 8 people arrived a few minutes later than the others, and sat there over for over 1/2 hour before they were given water. I ordered iced tea--they were "out". The salads were mediocre at best. We ordered an appetizer of meatballs (3), wedge salad, pasta, and one drink. The cost was $105, and we didn't even get the option of the tip amount. I. know it wasn't the waitress's fault for the kitchen issues, but her service was abysmal. The manager wasn't much better. He stood around talking while ignoring the issues at our table. I truly expected a quality experience given the atmosphere of the Pageant of the Masters. The Pageant itself was very good, though I was disappointed they didn't do more statues. The jewelry depiction at the end was awesome. The artists and artwork were amazing.

I thought this year’s first half was way too slow a bit of a mess. Some of the new projection ideas weren’t such a bad idea, but they were way too clumsy. The cartoon stick figures jerking awkwardly along the giant maps were childish and silly and just slowed up the flow of the show. Their scale also took away from the real art and frankly added nothing that a good narrator couldn’t provide and keep the focus. The projections tended to overwhelm the living tableaus, which is the whole point of the show. Going from a giant volcano erupting to focus on the small Pompeii Ventti house on the left where she just lies down was a bit of an anticlimax. Even the Moors on top of St Mark’s clock tower suffered as they were badly under lit, compared to the giant projection below them. And that big Emma Hart/Hamilton section was far, far too long about a very minor lady who danced and slept her way to the top. The first act’s finish was pretty good, but it just didn’t tip the scales for me, so we bailed and got the early trolley back to the hotel.

By Debbie |

I've seen the show quite a few times, but this one was very entertaining and exciting! My friend didn't know (before she saw the first show) that real people make up the paintings and sculptures, so this show demonstrated well how they put it together. Great job!!!

By B. Darst |

I recently attended the Pagent of the Masters and this is a must-see!!! The experience of being outside and watching people transform into works of art is simply breathtaking. Make sure to get there early and enjoy the local artists who are displaying their work. You can also listen to live music, enjoy dinner and a glass of wine or cocktail. This was a wonderful evening and if you are into theater and art this is an absolute must!!!

By Mark H |

I've been going to the POTM every year since 1984. Never missed a year except for that one year they shut down because of Covid.

This Years show was the worst show ever. We left at intermission.

There was no real art, just a giggling gen-z flashing her smartphone, lots of cheap & poorly produced video and a red car.

Is the Pageant over? Is this what the Pageant moving to Vegas looks like?

The Reader's Digest version is save your money and your time. A lot of the "art" on the grounds was county fair type material.

Very disappointed. Heads need to roll.

By SueCrew |

We haven't been in 15 years and the experience still takes my breath away. It is an amazing spectacle enhanced by the fact that over 500 volunteers spend a year putting it all together. It was great to see people of all ages enjoying it.

By vikast_11 |

The Pageant of the Masters is a Southern California icon - having been established during the Great Depression. Over the years, the show just keeps getting better and better.

As other reviews mention, the concept of the show is to recreate famous art pieces with living people. The french is "tableau vivant", but it is better expressed as "living pictures". The concept is hard to describe in words, so one really has to experience it to understand how well they mimic famous art works with real people. One may wish to view the Wall Street Journal video or the Jimmy Kimmel video (available on You Tube) regarding the Pageant of the Masters to gain a better appreciation of the concept.

Over the years, the Pageant has become more like a show. The last time I went was about 20 years ago and they simply recreated some art pieces. That was impressive enough.

Last night, we went to the Pageant and they had a full show. The theme of the Pageant was "Under the Sun", which is an ode to California / Laguna beach life. As a result, they had modern art work like the graphic poster from "The Endless Summer", songs from Jan and Dean ("Surf City") and the Surfaris ("Wipeout"). Prior to the intermission, they had a beach party with beach balls and people dancing from the 60s style. After the intermission, they concentrated on impressionist artists and paintings and ended with the "Last Supper" by Leonardo Da Vinci.

Prior to the Pageant, there are about 140 artists who put their work on display for sale. Walking around the artist booths can easily take an hour to spend some time looking a the art.

The Pageant also has a sit down restaurant, a fast food counter and a wine bar. Food and beverage prices are not cheap; however, they are more reasonable than other outdoor concert / sports venues. For example, Gluten Free pizzas were about $12. A glass of wine ranged from $10 to $16. There are so many great restaurants in Laguna Beach, that one can easily have a great dinner nearby and walk to the Pageant.

In summary, the Pageant of the Masters is an outstanding experience. If one has the faintest interest in art, theater or just want a wonderful relaxing night under the stars, then the Pageant should be on one's bucket list.

By Kathlene H |

Mind boggling! Beautiful venue - come early to shop the art venders, enjoy live music & quality snacks/dinner. Rent binoculars - its worth the $10. You'll pay for parking or use the trolley shuttle.

By Sylvia H |

I love the Pageant and go with my friends every few years. It's just amazing how they can recreate the art with real people and make it look like the original art! I have sat in various sections of the stadium and the closer seats definitely do make a difference!! Also, it is an outdoor venue and does get chilly at night, so it's a good idea to bring a sweater or a blanket!! Enjoy!

By travel4fun111 |

The production is well done and entertaining as well as educational. The artist displays are classy and a nice way to spend time beforehand. Bring your own binoculars as the rentals are poor quality.

By leeek |

I have seen the Pageant at least once every year since 1973. I have been in it for five years and my husband was in it for seventeen. I'm in awe every time I see it. The lighting, costumes and sets are so well done, it's hard to believe there are real people on stage. They do a "builder" every year, showing people climbing into the set under normal lighting, being posed by the crew, and then lights out and bringing up the incredible stage lighting that flattens the cast members into a "painting". You have to see it to believe it.
The Pageant is a must for summer visitors to Laguna. Every seat in the Irvine Bowl is a good seat.

By csatths |

My third consecutive visit to the Pageant did not disappoint. A spectacle that exceeds many Broadway shows. The attention to detail and history in the Laguna Bowl is an experience I will look to attend annually. A must see for even the novices of history in the arts. Incredible! Spectacular!

By ppickering |

This was our 16th time to attend the Pageant of the Masters. We enjoyed this event as much as we did the first time in 1992.

By Megan S |

If you are in Laguna Beach, or the surrounding area, in the summer, you must check this out! It is in the middle of an outdoor art festival, in an open-air theater (of course!) - it truly was amazing and a spectacular feat of art.

By AL50 |

This year was my 3rd in a row. I was wowed by the 2017 production and even more so by the 2018 production, a celebration of Southern California and the history of the Pageant. I think the Laguna and Pageant history should be addressed in all productions, as it is so unique and new to so many, and those who attend regularly will appreciate that connection. Also feel that showing the audience what is happening- individual in the “painting” comes out to the stage and costume is slightly rearranged before going back to painting (2017) or having someone in the painting make a slight move, adds not only a touch of humor but also reminds you that these are people, not just a projection of a famous painting. I was so excited for this year’s performance, but was profoundly disappointed. The “Time Travelers” in their vehicle did not make a connection, nor did the 50’s dancers whose performance seemed to go on and on and on. I guess it was still worth seeing, if not for comparison to the far better productions, but overall, it fell flat for me and others with whom I attended.

By TERI K |

Over the years, the Pageant of the Masters has had terrific themes and beautiful presentations of quality and gorgeous art exhibiting paintings by Masters. The past two years the show's appeal has plummeted in its choice of both art, and the poor musical numbers (2022) that I felt had little to do with the Pageant and art. This year, we saw mural art of L.A. that wasn't much above graffiti, as well as a Laguna artist which was mostly unknown and had little appeal. It didn't really seem like the theme of "Art Colony" was followed in a way that was appealing to the Pageant's audience. After two disappointing years (following many good ones in the past), I won't be back.

By Heatherina |

You just see this to understand how amazing it is... It's hard to describe. Go go go, it's fantastic Esp good for little ones to teach them about how to be creative and to think out of the box. Only complaint... Since you can't take pictures, I purchased the program and asked prior to paying for it if there were pictures of the art that was in the show, as in their presentation and she assured me there was. Well I felt duped, it was just pictures of the originals and a bunch of ad's. Note to the powers that be. If you want others to go out and share how amazing POM make it easy to do so.

By Laura P |

Every year, the Pageant of the Masters, comes up with unique ways to display masterpieces where the story teller reveals each art form and the Pageant makes it come to life. We always stay for the final masterpiece.

By mamiefiere |

Went to view, discussed with various people and came to the same conclusion, too much video. You go to see art come alive, what very little did was moving, but not enough.

By Connie A |

A group of us attended the Pageant on Sat night. One of the women had volunteered in the past and described how amazing the performance was with all volunteers as cast members. I was disappointed that the cast did not move at the end of the display time to let us really see where they were posing. I loved it when they did show before and after. It made it so much more amazing. The woman in our group that had helped in the past said that was how it used to be. Too bad.

By CsC |

My sister had an extra ticket and invited me to go with her and the boys. What a great show, very talented people!

By Larry B |

When you can...do not miss this fabulous show! The Paintings transform before your eyes like magic! I will be going back to see another performance in the future. I really enjoyed it!!!

By Nora W |

I can’t even say I visited, but I did drive 2 hours , spent 30 minutes looking for parking that wouldn’t close before 10pm, turned around and went home!

Most of the parking was reserved for vendors and festival workers.

WHERE WERE THE EVENT PEOPLE ON THE STREET TO DIRECT VISITORS???

By Slosaul |

We had very good seats 4th row center ($95). We got there about 7pm and browsed thru the crafts. Very beautiful stuff but way too expensive for me.

We ate dinner at the Lumberyard but there is plenty to eat at the Pageant - there is an upscale restaurant and a food court

Doors opened at 8 pm and show started at 830. Show was outstanding. Much better than the last time we saw it. After got a free shuttle right at the gate. Took us right to our hotel. Wonderful evening.

By Carol P |

Fantastic performance put on by volunteers. This year's theme was the "Time Machine". Weather was perfect and so was the show. This is a must see at least once in a lifetime if not more often as the theme changes from year to year.

By Coleenmb |

I have been going to the Pageant for many many years. Though I think the layout of the fine art is not as easy to navigate as it used to be; the show was fantastic. In my opinion, the best show I have seen in 10 years.

By Alicia N |

I truly enjoyed it the first time I went, 10 years ago or so. Not as impressive this time, I thought it was due to the fact that I've seen the show before so I knew what to expect. But my friend didn't look that impressed either and this was her first time.

By caspernl |

Incredible, one of a kind program. Hard to even explain what it is, just go and be amazed! Beautiful outdoor ampitheater, and great live orchestra music.

By ColoradoCareBear |

Second time I've attended the Pageant. My first time was 1990, and it's as spectacular as it was 28 years ago .. maybe more so because they now show more 'behind the magic' than they did back then. Simply amazing!

By Oma44 |

So unique and well done. This unique pageant is difficult to explain. It features local residents standing with no movement for 90 seconds in front of backgrounds of famous paintings and sculptures. The performers are in costume and make up as in original works of art. All this as you sit outside in the beautiful Laguna Bowl on a pleasant night. It's wonderful!

By Greg W |

We’ve been going to the pagent for over 30 years. We have a block of 12-14 seats in the middle of row 3 of the second level. What more can I say than it’s something anyone who appreciates art and music will enjoy.

By Tammy S |

This is a show like no other! Always a fun time and so much talent and time goes into this show to make it the very best!

By llarsLosAngeles |

I am a long time pageant attender. This year's pageant, I would term "unfortunate." There were far too many distractions---people riding horses, opera singers, and a thin storyline. At times, I felt I was in D-land rather than a cultural event. As previously mentioned, I have attended at least 8 Pageant of the Masters. "The Grand Tour" was a huge disappointment.

By 764fredap |

Actual paintings, most of them famous/familiar to most people, are showcased using REAL PEOPLE! Lighting, costumes, makeup background, everything is true to the paintings with details. It is jaw-dropping. I don't know anywhere else in US this is done. Totally worth a trip to the truly happening Laguna Beach. A free open air shuttle bus picks up at several places along the PCH. Seating people in an outside auditorium, the event is so beautifully created, you will want to return every year.

By gzau |

The Pagent is a very unique experience. It has an associated art show which is more like art for sale. The show replicates favours painting on a large scale with real humans inside the painting. It is almost impossible to see them even with a binocular. Well worth seeing as it's unique.

By JDinLA |

I've lived in So Cal for 50+ years and this was my first visit...but it won't be my last. Went with a friend and it was a perfect night. Bring a sweater and a light blanket, but you won't freeze no matter what! My only regret is that we aren't allowed to take photos, but I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much if I could. Bring binocs too!!!

By HeleOnHawaii |

The first time I attended the Pageant, I did not know what to expect or how huge the theatre was, so did not enjoy the show at all. However, being more knowledgeable this year, I bought a ticket much farther forward with a good view of the stage, & brought a seat cushion & binoculars. Get on the email list so that you will get notice of reduced price tickets several times during the season. Be sure to get there early to enjoy the art exhibits.

WORST EVER - DON'T GO!!!
If you haven't purchased your tickets for this year's Pageant of the Masters - don't bother or at least reconsider. If you have, I feel badly for you and anyone accompanying you. What you will be experiencing will not be what you expect from years' prior or what you may have heard from seasoned Pageant fans.

Most all attendees from our performance on the 25th of July (including us) never clapped at anything we saw, none of it was worthy of any praise or performance recognition. At least one-quarter of the attendees left at intermission (including a couple from San Diego seated to our right who have faithfully attended the Pageant of the Masters over the last 40 years and are now considering never returning). We stuck it out thinking the performances couldn't get any worse, we were so wrong. I should have taken note of the fleeing audience and fled with them - we could have at least salvaged part of our night.

What could have been an intriguing premise (fashion beginning from the Greco-Roman era through the lens of master portraits and sculptures) devolved into a poorly executed live 60's "no fashion" runway show, strange live performances with a poorly clad Edith Head, weird poorly choreographed dancing scenes, disconnected and ridiculous slide shows of the 60's London street scene, still photos of the Queen of England and well as the current King that were totally unnecessary, as were the frozen (no movement at all) tableau performances of the old masters.

Going to the Getty Center and/or the Getty Villa or any other museum followed by dinner and drinks overlooking the ocean in Malibu (or even Laguna Beach) would have been infinitely more enjoyable.

This year's Pageant of the Masters was a huge disappointment to say the least! Like so many other 1-star reviews on other sites, I also want my money back! Forget the 5-star reviews, they are most likely paid influencers or family members/friends of the Board, cast and crew. Look to the real 1-star and 2-star reviews for an objective opinion. I'm sorry I didn't do that before we purchased our tickets - and I promise you I will never make that mistake again.

I loved the original Pageant of the Masters - it was a feast for the eyes. The curtain would open revealing a perfect replica of an old master - frame and all - then after a few minutes of allowing you to study the old master it would literally come to life with a slight movement or repositioning of the people in the portrait who would then move back into the position as painted by the master painter (take your pick, Michelangelo, da Vinci, Rembrandt, van Gogh, Vermeer, etc.) - it was fascinating to watch and to listen to the clapping and cheers of the audience! You were in awe of each scene. Why and how the Pageant devolved into this lackluster, disconnected, disrespectful, fashion disaster is beyond belief... I just wanted to see old masters come to life, not some off, off, off, off-Broadway poorly written poorly cast slide-show filled play.

We traveled from the Bay Area just to see this year's Pageant and may never go back again, it was that awful. I will forever remember the 2024 performance as the "Pageant of the 'NO' Masters". I hope the board that approved this year's theme and those that executed it step down they deserve no accolades and certainly earned none.

This was our fourth or fifth year to come to this production. Unfortunately this year didn’t measure up to our previous experiences. The extent to which the artwork pieces ‘came to life’ was much reduced over previous years. We love pieces like when the lady with the parasol moved/came to life near the end of that selection. The ‘oh….ah…’ across the audience is audible in those great scenes. There wasn’t enough of that this year. We felt the entire production was not up to the level of previous years. Artwork selection, music selection, movement in the artwork - all lacking. We’ll come again, hoping the quality returns to what we have experienced in years past. If not, we’ll hold on to fond memories from the past.

By FunintheOCsun |

This is such a fun and relaxing night... It doesn't change much, but has a new theme each year. It's something that could be seen every 4-5 years, to be fully appreciated.

By genenalbandian |

It is an attraction that people from all the come visit and see. There are 200 volunteers that are dressed to recreate the most prolific and contemporary artist with scenes that are pantomimed to recreate the original paintings of the artists.
There are beautiful scenes throughout the amphitheater that deficit live actors using animals to enlighten and expand the scene and meaning of the painting
The program is one and half hours that keep your imagination alive.
There is Art Show in congunction with the pageant, entertainment and music that makes this one of the entertainment venues in the USA.

By Joel Z |

Our fourth visit to this almost 90 year old iconic festival where hundreds of volunteers recreate classic paintings, sculptures and other pop art.
It is simply impossible to see any individual moving or otherwise damaging the visual perspective. Buy tickets well in advance as this outdoor theater holds about 2500 people. Get as close as you can afford to pay.
And enjoy the fabulous art show on display in the waiting area.

This is the reason we come to Laguna year after year. It's nice to spend the day at the beaches and then come see the show. Parking and traffic can be tough, but well worth it! We recommend taking the public trolleys to save on walking!

This was my third visit to see the Pageant of the Masters, and my husband's first. Thankfully he loved it! We had a wonderful meal at the restaurant, enjoyed meandering through the art exhibits, and finally were stunned by the Pageant of the Master's show with the live orchestra!

Bravo!

By TonyFi18 |

Pageant of The Masters is a one of a kind experience in the entire world. A blend of recreating renound works of art, blended with world class live orchestra in a beautiful setting in one of the worlds top rated beach resort cities. This year the theme is The Time Machine". See it through August. Also the art festival throughout the city is top shelf.

we went last year and this show was everything people have talked about for years. So interesting and entertaining

By Chris O |

We have gone to the Pageant of the Masters many times during the past 20 years and it never disappoints. This unique experience is a must see for everyone. Bring binoculars....it's not that the venue is that large, but it's fun to see the details up close.

By Julian V |

This is a true bucket list excursion. My wife and I attended a program and it was amazing. From a distance you really can't tell if you are looking at a real painting of people in various positions and appearances. We would do this over again!!

By t0ky0m0m |

I had heard great things about this show from other locals so admittedly my expectations were high. The atmosphere before the show around the festival of arts with the art, the food and the music is so beautiful and relaxing. Again, more high expectations for the event of the day. The show started well with a fun theme - HG Wells Time Travel. Unfortunately, the theme was extremely hard to follow as it jumped around between time periods and the artwork was agonizing to watch as we all waited, and hoped, for the people to move or twitch. The highlight came when one leg in the artwork started dancing to the beat of the music - the crowd roared! If there were more moments like that it would have been so much more fun. Talking to a friend later I found that there is usually a detailed explanation of how the artwork was created which would have been interesting and, I believe, it is absolutely necessary to have to make the show work. It ended up being a somewhat confusing story with interludes of artwork that could have had people in them, maybe not, probably did - but frankly I didn't really care by the end of the show. For almost $200 a ticket, I was let down.

We experienced a Pageant of the Masters performance a number of years ago and I thought it couldn't get any better. I was wrong. This year's performance set a new bar. Brilliant production, fabulous music, sets, costumes, and volunteer actors! There is not one bad seat in the audience.

By gdeakins |

Impressive in so many ways. Attention to detail is amazing. Combination of visual effects, costuming and live music make for an enjoyable evening.

Rent or bring binoculars to enhance the “wow” factor. Bring an extra layer as it can get a little cool.

By mlstowe |

Very impressive production in beautiful outdoor setting. Food at the snack bar is not great. Loved it!

By Charley |

A great performance for folks from Mississippi! Couldn’t believe we needed light sweater and blanket - glad we listened to local advice. Enjoyed outdoor setting. Early music. Browsing the arts.

By KarenaSoto |

We had seats too far to see we’ll. The show had a slow start, very informative and had some magical moments. The art gallery was amazing.

By Tiffany M |

Sat in the middle. I would recommend going if you like art and are a stickler for detail. Great date idea.

By P S |

We have been members for 25 years and have attended the annual event each year. The remodeled venue is very nice and the art vendors did not disappoint. That is where it ended in 2023.

This 2023 show was nothing more than a mainstream media spectacle of the minority of political opinions. It was all about addressing every item on the political agenda. It was absolutely atrocious, distasteful, and frankly shocking.

Art is about expression. In this venue the show primarily highlights paintings and sculptures from all around the world from century old artists of every ethnic background and culture to more recent artists using live models, beautifully designed sets and magnificent lighting.

In all of our years as members, donators and paying guests, we have never been more disappointed or shocked. We had brought guests with us to attend, as we do each year and this show was a complete embarrassment to the organization, community, donors, members and guests. When art becomes nothing more than a spectacle to put checks in a box for unpopular views because of mainstream bullying, it is no longer art. It’s a comedic side show and not worth a penny to be part of.

Pageant of Masters and Festival of the Arts a a must see at least once in a lifetime but caution, you go once you'll be hooked for life. We have been for 30 years.

By ianshamshey |

I was in San Clemente visiting friends and they had purchased a ticket for me to attend new installation at the Festival of Arts-Pageant of the Masters. It was called the Time Machine. They were patrons of the festival for a number of years and had always said how much they liked attending. It was a nice night and since they were members, we attended on Members night and they had live music as well as food and drink. This was my first time at this event. Prior to the show, artists from the area exhibit their artwork for the public to peruse and potentially purchase. There was a lot of talent there that night. The pageant runs the course of the summer. Artwork is chosen based on a theme and volunteers are placed as part of the artwork [full makeup, costumes and scenery] It is quite an undertaking and they have already begun to prepare for next year's program. We also took a tour of the scenery used, where volunteers stand on the scenery, and where makeup and costumes are done. For me it was very interesting but my friends were disappointed in the overall effort since in years past, they told me the exhibit was spectacular.

By shayfree |

We ordered our tickets over the phone and two tickets cost $201.38. When we picked up our tickets the price said “$25”. DUH. We were pretty high and on the far right side — somehow, someone took gross advantage of us.

It was, however, an interesting show, but we were so far back, we couldn’t really appreciate the vignettes of all the paintings.

If you go, be sure to know where you want to sit, be sure you’re getting a fair priced ticket, and be sure to sit as close as possible to the stage.

By 4CaliGals |

Friends went the other night and sat in Row J. It was the slowest, worst performance I have ever seen in my life. I don't understand why or how so many people enjoyed it. One word - BORING! I think if you are closer to the front, it may have been a little better. Don't get seats beyond the first several rows. All of us were so happy when it ended. Never again! Checked off the bucket list to never return.

By Sharon G |

This festival, which runs for 2.5 months, is a unique event that really wowed us. Even after watching several youtube videos about it, I can't really see how the people created the art which really looked two dimensional. Since there are things on the side, I would avoid the seats in front. And yes, bring binoculars. We used them regularly.

By Daniel C |

What happened? I have LOVED and been amazed in the years past. Would have said it was one of the most amazing things to see in the world, definitely something to put on ones Bucket list if they had not seen it. This year OMG YUCK we left at intermission with floods of other people leaving too. Someone new in charge? What happened?

By Linda M |

This is a wonder of the art world. People in still pictures remaining absolutely still so that the picture seems one dimensional and if you didn't see it with your own eyes you wouldn't believe there really people in the pictures. And it's all done outdoors on a big screen in Laguna Beach. I loved it!

By Maria D |

This is an amazing and unique event . It’s hard to describe but it is an reinactment of paintings and sculptures using people who are painted to look 1D. It’s an amazing feast for the eyes under the stars in an open amphitheater . Don’t miss it !

By Jeff B |

Having attended the Pageant several times in the 1970's I was somewhat dismayed after bringing my wife and some friends to this years show when it didn't seem as wonderful and amazing as I remembered it. My first inclination was to doubt my memory but after reading some of the reviews here on TripAdvisor I now see that my impression regarding the show in the present iteration may not be far off the mark. Unless I am wrong, it seems that in shows past most of stage was used to depict the artwork and there were far more live models used in each scene. Also, unless I missed something by sleeping in art history class I certainly don't remember Buffalo Bill, Annie Oakley and Dizzie Gillespie being subjects of any of the Old Masters, but then what do I know? I do see how first time visitors may be delighted with the present show when they have not had the privilege and good fortune of seeing previous peformances.

By Michele K |

Every year amazing and unique. If you are a local, this year was for you.
Love checking out the art prior to the show. Seeing the students' submissions and talent makes me hopeful for the future.

By Nadene R |

In preparation, I read about this show as well as watched several UTube videos! Nothing sufficiently prepared me for this spectacular show. I was impressed with all the models bringing art to life! The story line and music was very entertaining. Afterwards I was simply in awe.

By devotees108 |

Every year, the Pageant chooses famous paintings which are depicted by people dressed in the same costumes as the ones in the paintings. With special stage design and lighting, the audience perceives the paintings to be paintings until they get a demonstration on how it is done. A live band plays beautiful music during the showing.

By ryantravelor |

The Pageant of the Masters is a must see live art performance in an outdoor amphitheater. It is an event you will want to experience at least once in your life and remember for the rest of your life. Each year the theme changes and makes you want to return the following year. Get there early as you want to see the art exhibit of all the local artists.

By Aleta w |

This is one of those events that you have to see because (to my knowledge) it cannot be found anywhere else in the US! The venue is an amphitheater. The sets are outstanding. Additionally, they use the whole space with actors appearing in the bushes on both sides and they even have set pieces that appear on the roof of the stage. I understand that every year is different.

This years theme was set in the 17th and 18th centuries and was based upon a "grand tour" which is a cultural tour of Europe undertaken by a young man of the upper classes as a part of his education. His "tour" was described through various "master" pictures. The pièce de résistance was that the artwork usually had a live person standing as one of the characters in the artwork. Sometimes they had the person step out of character and come towards the audience.

The reason why I did not give the show 5 stars was because it was not always clear if the artwork actually included a live actor. So my suggestion for improvement is for each live actor to make some movement so the audience will be able to separate the real from the unreal. The actors are what make the show special and they should not be hidden.

As others mentioned, you absolutely need binoculars to see the details of the art and a seat cushion is nice... both of which can be rented onsite.

Note that the Masters is held in conjunction with the Festival of the Arts which is handsdown the best art show outside of museums in the US. The Art Show even rivals many US museums.

You need to allow 2 days to view both events. Plus there is outstanding music in the art area. The Festival also provides a good selection of food with several tables scattered around the art area. They have a full service restaurant where we had planned on eating, but the food in the art area were excellent and fast.

I highly recommend a visit and be sure to get your tickets early.

By IanL62 |

It's difficult to understand why? Why spend the enormous effort and time to create these totally bizarre pastiches of works whose grateness can never be matched? Why gasps of amazement usher from the gullible audience? I suppose that the Disneyfication of art is inevitable in a country whose history post-dates most of the work being reproduced in this most bizarre event. Unique indeed and I think I Can see why.

By 48Buddy |

You can never quite envision this show experience until you attend it. The descriptions can't adequately convey what the show is. You will be in an outdoor amphitheatre with live music and a stage show. The art comes to life with actors taking positions in classic works of art.
Be sure to go early before the show to see the Festival of the Arts work displayed and for sale. One of our favorite exhibits is the children's art featuring student works from kindergarten thru high school.
You can rent binoculars for the pageant for $10, or bring your own if you have them.
This is a very unique and special art show that you should really see once in your lifetime.

By shadowwalker6 |

Go and try something new. This will be a great place in time. You will be taken away to far off lands and a different place in time. You will see new and old things but good with an open mind. Spend some time and relax and enjoy the company.

By jerjon |

This was our first time at the Pageant. It was very enjoyable and the artistry was amazing. I was glad we had bought binoculars. I wasn't sure what exactly to expect; the whole show was entertaining. I wish we had come a bit earlier to enjoy more of the art. Next year...

By James Weaver |

25 years ago, you would still have had trouble getting a ticket for this summer event. Now with an entirely new layout and overhaul of the grounds, with better food, faster service, tables to sit down and enjoy, music too, do you think it is easier? I was extraordinarily lucky to be invited by a member who had ended up with 2 extra tickets. With the best seats I have ever had, row H, the Pageant takes on a new meaning in sight and sound. The Orchestra is wonderful, the closeness allows better sight lines to the sides, which I had never before had. If you have the opportunity, my recommendation is to find yourself in this situation. Otherwise, purchase tickets as early as possible. Once, as I was in line at the ticket booth, the man in front of me had a brief case, which he was quickly filling up with tickets. Astonishingly, I watched as he filled it and left. I wondered for a moment if any were going to be there for me to buy. Many years ago it was just still and silent reenactmentments, now movement is allowed, and speech. This was a welcome change to many and a disheartened few grumbled of another tradition lost. Having seen both, and observed them, I hope I understand equally each side. It remains to me a wonderfully glamorous night out.

My wonderful GF suggested that we tool down to Laguna Beach for a Pageant performance; I hadn't been to one in decades, and I was totally taken by the idea. We drove down in the afternoon, got a room at one of Laguna's many inns, had a lovely dinner, and caught the trolley to the Pageant in time to wander through the art exhibits at the entrance. The show begins at 8:30, and it may get a bit cool, so bring a light jacket. The theater is in the open, seats maybe 2 or 3 thousand, programs are $10 (worth it!). The theme this year was The Grand Tour, presenting works of art that a 17th century young English gentleman might encounter during his first exposure to the continent. Each work is represented on the stage by a fully developed representation of the art work, including human figures played by real people in costumes of the period. It's all done to a high degree of perfection, with wonderful musical accompaniments from a live orchestra. A major attraction to me was a segment devoted to the life of Lady Emma Hamilton, who posed for a number of renowned artists, and wound up as the mistress of Admiral Horatio Nelson. If you love the arts, you shouldn't miss this, it's a trip to Never-Never Land!

By John_in_LB |

It is a nice show, certainly different than anything else. However, it should cost $15 to $50... not the $100+.

By rsenteno |

This is an absolute must do for everyone it does not matter if you like art or not it's a world renown show that is not to be missed

It's turned into an annual summer tradition

By Genie D |

We’ve have attended the Pageant for the past 10 years
and it’s truly a feast for the eyes. It’s different every year
and always amazes with the different tableaux representing the masters. There’s a restaurant, snack bars , and local art work on the location if you wish to eat and stroll around before the performance. I would suggest bringing binoculars if you are not sitting towards the front. It can get crowded so be sure to give yourself enough time to park. There is a very efficient shuttle tram that runs from the parking lots to the Pageant site.

By Cynthia W |

Must see to appreciate the amazing life art and story. Music prior with beautiful art work that is not in every ones price range.
The fake grass they add approx 2 years ago took away a little of the beauty of the grounds.
Music prior to the show so be sure to show up early.

By NorthStar11325175843 |

We were able easily park on Monday on the road with paid meter 15 min before performance. Have seen 2 times in past years, and this was my favorite. Love the film themes, Hitchcock film history. Theme was art of fashion. Fascinating history. Well written. Live orchestra is great. Weather was great. Keep in mind staff will shine a flashlight on you if they see your lighted phone during performance. Reccomend binoculars really helps one appreciate the details. Did not need blanket maybe a light jacket. The models volunteers are working hard for your entertainment!

By Elaine S |

The last time I had been at the pageant was 25 years ago with my mom. great show. My only complaint is the seats-very small and uncomfortable.

By Jay B |

This year they did Time Travel and had a replica of HG Wells time machine. They traveled back to Leonardo Da Vinci and visited everything from that time to the present. The part where they celebrated the moon landing was my favorite part. It brought me back to my childhood.

By Cappie G |

I absolutely love Pageant of the Masters. I plan this trip with Girlfriends as often as possible.
When going be sure to walk up the street to Sawdust, the best display of art.

By dkgirvin |

It is always fresh and amazing, that is why I have been going for the last 30 years. It is always interesting to talk with people that are seeing it for the first time, the oohs and has
are great.
It is a must see for it is impossible to describe it.

By NYCMama12 |

We didn’t know what to really expect, but was pleasantly surprised. Our teens thought it was something different to see and invoked a discussion afterwards about art and history. Win!

By Dancinkwn |

Friday night at the "Pageant of the Masters" in Laguna Beach, CA where Art comes alive! My first time! What an amazing theatrical, live full orchestra musical/theatre performance where they recreate famous artwork as a narrated, live-Theatre performance. "Live" bodies recreate the artwork down to the finest details on stage in a huge amazing outdoor canyon theatre. I particularly enjoyed the "statue" art; live people painted like statues, standing very still. Surreal! I've never experienced anything like this in my life! Such Splendor! Such Beauty! Such Grandeur! Lots of God-bump moments including the final piece, "The Last Supper". There is also an Artist Show where the vendors show their beautiful pieces of incredible art before and after the show. Come early and stay late. There's so much to see! Wow! Thank you! (Taking photos during the show is not allowed.)

By jam5180 |

The Grand Tour is a deviation from the previous PM programs. It was done with a good deal of imagination using today's technology but included art mediums from the era.

By easy22 |

What a strange idea theoretically. But in execution, so amazing! People dressing up as paintings and statues and even jewelry???? This year was the best one ever and I have seen many of them.

By Luiv2Vacation |

This show is like no other! I think everyone should experience this at least once. I brought my mother from Chicago because it is so amazing! I love this production company, they are so unique.

By GardaGal0912 |

This is only my 2nd visit to the pageant , but I regret not going every year because it is so amazing and unique and every year a different theme. The weather was especially perfect on the night I was there, but take a wrap just in case.

By Double_Indemnity |

Middle America might love this but I didn't This series of tableaus is really an immense waste of time. I kept checking my watch for it to end 15 minutes in. Wait... there was an intermission! Over 2 hours of people standing still on stage. The premise that some things popular in the 19th century might still be entertaining to people in the 21st is a legitimate one. This "show" is not.

While the effects of seeing a painting occupied by living people is interesting for about three seconds, it is also very corny accompanied with the narration and flag-waving music. And believe me I am patriotic and love this country but this is an anachronism. I could not believe how crowded the amphitheater was. And expensive. Save your money and time. btw - Went in August 2016 (not an option on drop-down menu.

Hint - if you do go, -don't go with teen children unless you want to constantly hear, "Can we go now." Wait...maybe that is a good thing.

By Kristin M |

Beautiful setting and facility. High quality production value.
Not riveting. Seemed perfect for the people in front of us that were very high. Sort of odd story/approach. Wanted the actors to do or say something rather than just be the masterpiece.
Glad we went and glad we only stayed for half of it.
Art festival was nothing special.
Food and drink situation was pretty good.
Expected more overall.

By Bonnie G |

Imagine a famous painting on an outdoor stage with lighting and full orchestra. This beautiful venue recreates famous paintings with volunteers stepping into the painting, the lights fade to black and the curtain opens to a beautiful life-size masterpiece. This year marks the centennial of Laguna so you also get a historical narration of the area. This should be on everyone's bucket list. This is what put Laguna on the world map!

great evening of wandering the art venue, listening to live music and being amazed by the show. Again, a wonderful presentation and artistic expression of Laguna Beach and it's art history

Visiting friends in California is always a blast as we do something different/quirky each visit

This year it was the Laguna Festival of the Arts and Pageant of the Masters.

What a great night out. Gorgeous displays of local art works, lovely places to sit, relax and have a drink or snack.

Then into the main outdoor theatre for the show and what a show it is.

I still don’t know how they kept their poses seemingly without breathing

Excellent

Absolutely one of the worst experiences I've had for a Halloween themed event, EVER. Paid 25 per adult and 10 per child plus a 20 dollar service charge weeks in advance for the "Pageant of the Monsters" at this venue. Here is it:

1. They over sold the event. This resulted in huge crowds, lines, and long waits. I'm talking Disneyland-like lines. It opened at 6 pm and admission to the "maze" inside was to begin at 6:45. You are instructed to "visit the side-shows" while you wait for your tour time for the maze (more on that later). Anyway, we arrived at 6 pm and the line to get in snaked along the street. When we finally got to the gate, are very rude staff member scanned our 4 tickets and we received our "fast pass" which was not a fast pass at all. It had a time of 8:25 to enter the maze!

2. Rude and totally inept ushers and staff. Many of the staff are older and not patient at all. When you have a venue with crowds and paying customers to direct, it helps if the staff do not add to the exasperation. There didn't seem to be anybody who was responding to the chaos of the crowds with patience and organization. Instead, the staff attitude just added fuel to the fire.

3. Rude adults. This is supposed to be a family friendly event. I brought my two sons, 8 and 13. After waiting 45 minutes in the "Alien Autopsy" side show, we made it to the tent with the autopsy. We were ushered in at the back end of the group. Probably about 30 adults in front of us at the autopsy table where everyone was directed to learn forward and get a good look. The staff member who ushered us in stated several times to let the children to the front of the group as they are "vertically challenged". OK so at least he gave it a try. Well, after 3 attempts the staff member left us and none, not a single freaking one of the adults in front, would move to allow the kids to view the table.

4. Imaginary "lines" on the ground? After the issue with the adults at the Alien Autopsy, we left the area and asked the staff member if we could go with the next group so we could get a better position to view the display. He rolled his eyes and asked me to step past the line. I looked down and saw no line...no line, no sign, no roped area...nothing indicating a division between us and anything. At this point staff are letting the next group rush in and it's a total mess. We just left.

5. What was left to do? The other side shows and services were hard to locate due to the crowds. There were lines all over, but for what? The signage indicating the entrance to each show was done by hand in ink on white paper. People kept asking what each line was for. A total mess, organizationally.

6. Maze be damned. At this point we still had an hour and a half to wait and enter the maze, which was the whole point of coming. The lines for popcorn, refreshments, and other "side shows" were ridiculous. It's very sad that the venue placed revenue over a quality family experience. I will never attend Pageant of the Masters/Monsters ever again. Total ripoff and cash grab. I was so pissed I threw the tickets for the 8:25 entry to the maze on the ground and left to go home and carve pumpkins. It was only 7 PM. Pageants, go eff yourselves.

The singing and dancing!!! The best Pageant I have seen. So creative and beautiful. Congratulations to the team and orchestra.

The Pageant is always superb, outstanding and extraordinary when you learn what goes into producing! i Have sat in the very top row from cancellation tickets, the last one.I wouldn't do that due to rats behind us! Remember it is in a canyon. All the other sits are great.I don't advice sitting to close or you begin to see eye movements breating etc.from mid section it is amazing.Looking at Life size Master Pieces! Pack a picnic incl. wine, yes, they allow you to bring your own.You must go early though, asham they have less grass space than before.Check ahead. There are also plenty of food options to buy!

By Lisa H |

We loved the whole experience, from the festival before the show, the ambiance and of course the pageant itself. We loved how they brought the story together and used the whole venue as part of the show. Next time I will bring my own binoculars or rent them at the beginning of the pageant, you definitely will want them the whole show!

By BratNorv |

If I had not seen the way the art was put together, I would never have known that the canvas was "alive". Well worth the drive from Arizona and the price

By ricki k |

I have never seen a show quite like this. They show paintings and statues of the old masters. Then they give you the history of that painting/statue.
There is actors in some presentations. The music adds a lot to it.
A must see. There is also a restaurant in the art gallery for a quick dinner before
You may want to bring a sweater as it does get cool in the evening. The show is two hours with a fifteen minute intermission.

By Anastassia L |

Completely agree with some of the people. Waste of time and money. Not like it used to be. I was there last night. Very disappointed. I recommend to my friends and they bought tickets already. I hope they can return them.

If you love art and want to see it literally come alive, this event is perfect for you. The artistry and effort of recreating masterpieces with live models is just incredible. It really is a program with very thoughtful transitions between art pieces and incredibly interesting stories weaved throughout. It was like traveling through a museum but you stay in your seat and the art, history, and education come to you. Absolutely bring binoculars or rent them while you are there, the level of detail is extraordinary and you will want to see it up close. Wonderful event to pack a picnic and listen to live music and stroll through local artists exhibits. There is food on site and a wonderful restaurant if you don't have a picnic in hand. It's worth paying the $10 for parking nearby!

By Helen A |

It's been 4 years since I wrote a rave review of the entire event including the pre-show art exhibit, and I must say, it's still impressive, especially to first time visitors who went with me. We took the trolley from the satellite parking lot and arrived at the grounds ata 6 pm. Unfortunately, it's now so crowded that if you don't arrive early enough, there is no where to sit with your picnic. We (party of 5) were lucky to find the last space on a low wall to sit on, near the restrooms, The former grassy area where one could spread a blanket did not exist. There were some tables but not enough. I suppose one would have to get there when it opens, say 5 pm, to grab a table (or a wall!). Hopefully added seating next year would improve the pre show experience to the level it was previously. Not being able to picnic comfortably was a disappointment. Even if one bought the food for sale, which is exorbitantly expensive, where would you sit? The art exhibit in the grounds is impressive and it's fun to talk to the artists about their work, as well as visit the gift shop. As to the actual Pageant show, over the years it has added more technology to enhance the experience, and the special effects are very well done. Before one sees any actual tableaux vivants, however, there is an entertaining lead-up that seems to take too long. We were there to see the tableaux and patiently waited for the pre-tableaux part to be over. Due to the unique nature of the show, the Pageant was just as awe-inspiring in the days of the simpler production when it didn't cater so much to the trend for special effects which seems to be for the purpose of attracting a younger audience. This is a very old tradition in Laguna Beach and all the bells and whistles that have been added to the presentation over the years, have become somewhat of a distraction from the focus on the tableaux that in themselves are enough to provide an awe inspiring presentation. Great to see a fake flying saucer rising over the hills, the audience gasped, the kids loved it, but what has that do with the tableaux and the amazing presentations that really don't need additional distractions to impress the audience. The wonderful tradition of the Pageant should not be diluted by special effects that apparently are meant to liven up an experience that does not need to be radically changed. We come to see the traditional experience and to introduce the younger generation to the skills and artistic appreciation of a simpler time. It's sad to think we can't appreciate it without it being presented with spectacular side shows of present day technology. There's an expression 'guilding the lily" and I think this was an example of it. Loved the tableaux and appreciate all the work and care that went into this year's production.

Outstanding experience at the 2025 Pageant of the Masters! Absolutely wonderful. Fun. Festive. Amazing artists on display beforehand and the Pageant itself was AMAZING this year.

I’ve been many times before but this is probably my last due to incomplete employees. We were late because we walked there. No biggie. It just started. Yet because of the acts and respect to the audience it takes 10 minutes to get to where we were told these were our seats. Alas there isn’t actually two seats available so I’m asking the people in our seats to move. However the employees told me wrong. It was the wrong row and only one seat. Then I got scolded by one employee taking out my phone to show her my tickets so we can get to the correct row and they don’t even look (it’s two employees guiding us btw) and we’re guided to a second row and guess what. It’s one seat instead of 2. Again. And the wrong row. Again. It’s not a problem if it happens once, but twice with two people guiding us? If the employees don’t know the alphabet or venue maybe don’t let them guide patrons to their seat?

Then, it gets worse. We’re seated behind a family with little children who immediately start complaining they can’t see now that the seats in front of them were occupied by my wife. Not my problem, but the kids could use some manners because they kept talking until intermission which was ok. The wife on the other hand was directly behind me and repeatedly kicked my seat. 9x that I counted, each too forceful to be an accident.

At intermission I asked her to stop kicking my seat. She doesn’t apologize but she goes on the offensive and tells me not to show up late if I don’t know my seats! They were mad at me for showing up late and not knowing my seats, and the the 10 year old daughters were mad there were people in front of them. I guess the employees disrupted their experience by attempting to sit us in the wrong row twice, but I was guided by employees who read my tickets who either can’t read the rows or can’t read. Yes, I was late, at least I knew my seat numbers and wasn’t kicking people in front of me for sitting in their correct seats.

But it gets way worse, because then her husband gets all aggressive at me for requesting his wife stop kicking my seat. Which is fair; we all came to have a good time and spent good money to be here. Her husband came to ruin the experience, however and proceeds to get angry. Then he disappears hopefully to cool off bit returns with security to get us to leave. A trashy move from a loud, seat-kicking family upset their daughters had to sit behind occupied seats. Maybe they should buy front row seats next time? Pageant of the masters needs better people working for them, and should work to prevent talkative audiences who kick seats and who attempt (successfully) at ruining the experience for everyone else. I won’t be back next summer.

Flawless. Enough said! But there were no problems whatsoever exchanging the authorization for tickets.

With the best seats I have ever had, row G, the Pageant takes on a new meaning in sight and sound.

You won’t see another show like this anywhere!! Absolutely beautiful !
Don’t forget your binoculars if you aren’t close to the front . We will definitely come back and see again

We've been to the Pageant several times and have always enjoyed it. This time was a little disappointing. There was a lot of video. Not much "Masters". The California artists highlighted were interesting as was the history of Laguna Beach. It is still amazing to see how they set up a painting and then light it so that it looks 2D. If you've never been, it is worth a trip. If you have been, don't expect the older versions of the show.

Unbelievable re-creations of the Master's works of art. You do have to see it to believe it. Last year was only my second visit and I only wish I had the time and the cash to make it every year. Take a look at there website to get a better idea. Book early if at all
possible, to get the best selection of seats. But worry not, there are always some last minute offers-just show up early morning of- and see what tickets have been turned back or are still open (sometimes at reduced prices). Plan to go early and enjoy the included Art Show and you can bring a picnic meal or purchase food there. Pageant tickets allow you to return to the Art Show all summer long.

By JSTravels |

I have gone twice and definitely plan to keep going. The art show is filled with talented artists. The pageant is an amazing show you will not see anywhere else. Live actors recreate notable artwork onstage in a way you can’t imagine until you see it.

This year the Pagent focuses on the history of the Pagent. It was very interesting to learn about how it got started, while also seeing the beautiful art we are accustomed to seeing at the Pagent of the Masters. We took the free Laguna Beach trolley back to the hotel!

By Jbka6863 |

The Pageant is always amazing. The way they have people stand so still and paint them and the backgrounds to look like paintings is, always, a site to see, However, this year the theme covers how Laguna started, the art history, surfing and then impressionism art. The live orchestra is always appreciated, but with the surfer songs this year and all the live singing and dancing entertainment inserted..... I think Im going back for a second time!!!
HUGE FAN OF THIS YEARS PAGEANT!!!

We attended the Pageant of the Masters during it's last week: typically runs first week of July through end of August. My wife had attended many years ago (more than 20) but my son and I were first timers.

We booked quite early in the year. Spent a little more for tickets so we could be close up. More importantly we stayed in Laguna Beach a day before and day after our evening at the Pageant. Not having to drive into town during peak hours, park, or deal with any of that headache was a major positive: highly recommend it.

The Pageant was a wonderful mix of magic (many moments of "how did they do that"), flawless music, some history, and a great feeling of live performance under a warm summer night.

If you like theater, or art, or history, or art history, or performance art, then this experience is a must.

Make sure to arrive early to enjoy the many art exhibits. I was surprised by the number of booths and the mix of art to enjoy (and by if so inclined!)

Last note, our teenager was wholly against this prior to going. We marveled at how much he enjoyed talking with the artists in their booths at intermission, the live orchestral music, and more importantly the pageant itself!

I had only seen this on TV. In person, is so much better! It is an amazing show and I am glad that they show you behind the scenes so we can appreciate it even more. This year they are celebrating their 100th year. They are featuring the history of Laguna Beach and the art scene. Laguna artists were showcased. It is a must see if you are in the area. From my understanding, they only do these shows during the summer months. It is an outdoor theater, so I recommend bringing a sweater or blanket because the evenings can get cool.

By Torlus |

This is unlike anything else I have ever seen. It is unique and almost impossible to explain. When you do explain it, it just sounds silly.
A must for anyone who appreciates and / or love art. Though not just for connoisseurs, amateurs will appreciate it too! It is also light hearted so not just full on art lovers meaning children with an interest in art can also enjoy it.
Tickets are not cheap so I dont know that I would do it year after year but it is well worth it!
Seats as far forward as you can afford. We were in the 2nd section and could see quite well. Not sure binoculars are as important as some say. Just look with your eyes and enjoy it. No need to zoom in on every single piece.
Seats are surprisingly comfortable.
Arrive early and have dinner in Laguna there are lots of restaurants and once you enter the area of the event there are loads of stalls and exibits.
Had a great time!

I've been going to the Pageant for many years and this year I was disappointed in the theme and lack of classic art. The first half was mostly about Laguna Beach and its history. So it was just a different experience all together than previous years.
I brought friends with me this year who were first-timers and I could tell they were a bit disappointed too. I will return however, as the Pageant of the Masters brings an unexplainable joy to my soul!

By David H |

Our S-I-L plays guitar for this spectacular masterpiece showcase of artistic talent. The program, actors, and musicians are all world class! The art displays at the event's entry area are also very interesting and enjoyable. This was our first time to visit Pageant of the Masters, but it certainly won't be our last. Bravo ... very well done!

By TheSeaIsForMe |

It’s hard to know where to start with this review, because there’s a very cool gimmick that makes the performance, and I don’t want to give it away! I will say it’s very entertaining! This was our first visit, but the locals tell me it’s gets better every year.

Let me also say this, you should make a full day of your visit. There are three Art festivals that are typically going on during the performance season in Laguna Beach.

Start with the Sawdust, move on down towards Laguna Beach, to experience the Laguna Art A-Fair, enjoy a nice meal in Laguna Beach (there’s a ton of cool places), make time for the Festival of Arts, and finish your evening with the Pageant of the Masters performance. Tickets are a must.

If you can fit in a visit to the Laguna Art Museum, it’s great.

Tips: Make liberal use of the shuttles, parking can be a challenge, but the shuttles are great. Have a meal up near the top of the cliff. There’s a couple of good restaurants up there, and the view of the Pacific is awesome. Some of the fairs share tickets, so do your homework to save some money.

By 376PMD376 |

Purchasing tickets through TripAdvisor was seamless and the performance was “timeless”. Truly enjoyed the music and singing, too. Parking in City Lot #16 and taking the free trolley worked out well. We hope to go again next year and take in the Sawdust Festival also.

The Pagent of the Masters is an annual summer event in Laguna Beach. It is a unique and inspiring event only found in Laguna Beach. Plan to buy tickets for next summer as soon as they are on sale. We love to go early and see all of the amazing art, have dinner on the festival grounds and then see the show. Really wonderful experience.

By Mary H |

this is a very artsy part of orange county . arrive early there are lots of art and crafts to see. you can also walk down to the sawdust festival and see arts and crafts. At the pagenant of the masters you can buy a light dinner and listen to a musical group. if you get there early you can park farther out and take a shuttle into the pagnent.

Since I live in California, I've attended the Pageant of the Masters every year for over 25 years. It is a show with tableaux of living art. Live people are used to depict different artwork - e.g. paintings, sculptures, jewelry, ceramics, posters, and other mediums. The highlight of the show is when you get see a example of how they put together the scene and the actors/actresses are assembled onto the stage. You have a hard time believing that those are real people on the stage. It only runs in July and August and the theme changes each year so plan your trip to California accordingly and buy tickets in advance. Dancing, singing, and other interesting vignettes have been added to the show.

By Terri H |

We took our children here over the summer and they all really enjoyed it. It was wonderful to see all the beautiful and unique art work before the show. The show itself was like something I have never seen before. It was mesmerizing and gorgeous and I couldn’t keep my eyes off the stage. It was a perfect evening. I suggest sitting close to the stage so you can see everything close up. We saw older adults as well as young children in the audience. It is an enjoyable event for all ages.

I remember seeing the Pageant as a child in the '60s and since then the production has improved in many ways with the introduction of a live orchestra, digital projection effects, and expansion of the facility to incorporate more features and amenities. This world-class attraction sets the bar for efficiency, ease and enjoyment -- online ticketing, entry, and seating are all expertly handled. There is nothing in the world like the on-stage live capture of works of art from leading museum collections, woven into a captivating story through staging, narration and special effects. If you didn't pack binoculars, be sure to rent them at the entrance to fully appreciate the human dimension and dimensionality in these stunning depictions. Truly a memorable experience.

By birkeebabe |

This show is so hard to explain, you need to see it. It was our first time going. The painting that come to life. A must to do if you are visiting in the summer. The art festival was wonderful as well. There were so many great artists displaying their work. The whole evening was just perfect.

By Linda L |

This is simply a magical experience. The artist are cutting edge and true masters. Lots of variety. The musical entertainment is superior. We heard a Brazilian jazz singer and ensemble. Beyond fun. Experienced picnickers brought lovely picnic food—-salads and fresh fruit and lovely wines galore. We nibbled on concession food which was tasty too.
Then the presentation of the masters began. We were in total awe of the precision involved. Each replica more stunning than the next. The voice of the moderator was intriguing and robust.
A gentleman behind us participated over 50 years ago as a young boy. He clarified how the actors were trained and poised. It’s a DO NOT MISS. ONE OF A KIND EVENT.

* If you are going to the Pageant of the Masters, try to get the seats as close to the front of the Irvine Bowl as possible. My wife and I splurged and purchased great seats for just a little more money on StubHub.
* If you are sitting more than 1/3 of the way up the theater, bring or rent bionoculars for each person. Part of the game is to catch a person moving and you cannot do that if you share or don't have bionocluars.
* While it can be 80 degrees when you enter the Festival of Arts facility - it gets really cool to cold after 9 PM - so bring a warm jacket or blanker.
* Sit back and enjoy the show as there is nothing else like it.

I have been going to the pageant since I was a kid in 60’s. This is the first time that the lighting or makeup wasn’t up to snuff and you could see the models clearly and the image was more 3 dimensional rather than 2, and that detracts from the idea of living art. It was a great show this year, the content was great but the images presented were not as good as previous years. Still worth seeing though.

By Ken B |

Make sure you look at the seat map carefully and you might score a great seat for $60. Try to sit on the left side in the front but right on the edge of the pricey seats. Also this is near the exit. Very large audience. The show is really amazing considering the use of real people, kind of hard to believe. It's a long show and I'm guessing once is enough. Book in advance and if you book a table at their restaurant It makes it a pretty easy night. We were able to eat and park downtown and it was an easy walk.

By caneguy |

Hokey? Overhyped? Yea, that is what I thought for many years before I went this year for the first time. Results? I went again to see what I could not believe the first time. The production of this event is amazing. I had seats in the back area and with poor binoculars I thought that the first few sets were just pictures not the live settings. Boy was I fooled! Went early and walked around looking at the artwork on display. Loved the student section with some amazing talent on display from students starting in Kindergarten. Did the same thing on the second visit but had much better binoculars and the show/production was even better. One of my favorite sets was when they showed you how they set it up and then do the lighting, changed the whole scene! The music that is played with each set and during the show is first rate, excellent orchestra is first rate. Next year for sure will look for discount pricing for better seating, But even with back row, with good binoculars you are in for a special treat.

This years show is much different and very good. It felt like a NY Broadway Show. Very unusual from previous years but the 4 of us really enjoyed it. We always go early for the Art outside the theater than we go in and enjoy. This show is so unusual every year because we have never seen anything like it throughout the world. You have to see it at least once but will want to come back to compare from others.

By Linda M |

Nothing like it. It amazes every year how they take noteworthy art and recreate it with people posing. Young or old it doesn't matter. All are entranced. And of course, you are right there in Laguna Beach which is an A1 experience/attraction of its own.

By joseph d |

This is a very cool live art show there is also a very nice restaurant here and they do concerts all the time and also there is a ton of art to see and buy at this place definitely a must to see one time they also have a lot of other things going on also

By markI5153NG |

Just doesn't work for youngsters, so just don't try. We have with kids that generally like art, but this takes another level of patience that they just don't have. So don't make the mistake we have made - twice. But again, for adults its really, really unique.....

By Whimsicalartist |

It is hard to say that when live people are painted to bring a Master work to life each year in a form of a documentary, you must see it for yourself and describe your impression.

By Joel G |

Well-establish pageant of "living art"--painting and sculptures with human figures.Excellent production quality, sound and music accompaniment. Outdoor amphitheater. If you haven't seen it, then GO! Ticket entitles you to view the extensive high-quality art show on the pageant ground.

By T A |

What a total FLOP. As one reviewer said, it was like watching a school play. It used to be amazing, and I took a friend who has never before seen it, so she had no comparison, but we both wanted to leave, so at intermission, we did. Along with a large number of other audience members. It was a mass exodus!

All of this singing and prancing and the juvenile skits, it was embarrassing to see what it has become. Such a shame. It used to be amazing. The Master's paintings look like the same graphic artist used the same color palette to make a digitized version of what used to be real people replicating Master's works. It was very disappointing. Will not return..

By Suanne S |

Next year will sit closer and come earlier to really check out the art display. I've wanted to come for years and finally decided to celebrate my birthday there. I thought it was amazing & compelling. I would loved to have seen a bit more movement into & out of the stationary installations...I think it would be even more miraculous. Such a great learning experience as well...

By geomoffat |

All done by volunteers, this is the most unique "show" you will ever see.
Sets are created so that when the actors appear on stage (staying completely still for a couple of minutes) a painting (for example) is faithfully rendered in 2D. How this amazing illusion is created is sometimes shown when the set is slightly illuminated before the actors come on or just before they leave.
A wonderful evening not to be missed.

By Ree1949 |

I've been attending for about 30 years and it's always a special treat.
Love, love it! What a great area to have the pageant. Love the art affair and all the local bars and restaurants.

By Gypsybam |

I have come to the Pageant of the Masters/Festival of the Arts for years and became a member because I believe in what they do. Each year I bring family and friends, get a VRBO and enjoy! Over the years I have loved the history I learn about art pieces....last year I got the full scoop on Nellie Bly! I loved it all. We come and bring wine and a charcuterie and enjoy the live music. Then we enter the theater which is always magical with the stage, full orchestra and narrator. The 1 st time I ever came, the narrator was the voice of "Tony the Tiger". What fun! I appreciate all the artists and those in the pageant. It is a special time each year.

Bring binoculars and you will truly enjoy Art and the WOW factor

I have been twice and it's one of my favorite things to do IN LIFE. It's unique and magnificent and almost impossible to describe. Takes your breath away.

By Sundancer93003 |

The pageant has been going for 80+ years. I have gone the last six years. Having real people recreate famous art is such a unique concept. Also, the creativity of following a different theme every year is very interesting.
The Festival of the Arts has become very disappointing. We used to be an able to come early with a picnic basket, find a table and listen to live music. Now you have to pay to reserve a table in the area in front of the stage. More and more it is a venue for wealthier people. I am sad, but probably won’t go back.
