Great park!!

By Dawn H |

We mainly went to go to the zoo in the park, but were pleasantly surprised by the rest of the park besides the zoo (which we loved)
They have amazing baseball diamonds, including one that almost looks like a minor league park mini stadium. They have a little train ride, amazing gardens and picnic areas. It really is a great park, you can make a day there by going to their zoo, and having lunch/dinner in the park.

A Gem

By RoyM1336 |

This zoo has really done a complete turn around. While hardly in the same class as the Bronx Zoo or Roger Williams Park it is still a very nice facility. Wide variety of animals in suitable enclosures, reasonable admission, well organized. My toddlers loved it!

Beautiful trails

By Nate B |

Visited Forest Park the last time I was in Springfield. Trails are maintained, the aqua gardens are amazing, and everything was very clean. Very calm and relaxing, a great escape from the city life.

By Niki S |

I have walked here in the morning. Nice walking trails. But when I went looking for a bathroom, the only one that I found was a disgusting port a potty.

Forest Park with the grandkids.

By Neil S |

Great place to see the animals at the zoo with the grandkids, play in the playground and go on the train ride around the park.

Bright Nights nice but needs updates!

By Jim G |

We have enjoyed Bright Nights for many years however the lights haven't been upgraded but the price go up. Considering what's available in this day and age for lighting it would be nice to see some newer styles.

By dianne_tjm |

My hubbys been planning to take me to this park but we never went untill we visitef enfield and finally we drove to this park.the lights are amazing and its really a product of art and good enginering programming.

I enjoy Forest Park

By sweetp9994 |

I know everyone is always down on Springfield, but I really enjoy Forest Park. I feel safe thee, there is almost always a police presence. The people are nice. It is wonderful during the week, less crowded and more friendly clientel. Usually clean, bathrooms could use work and someone needs to monitor the park and playground area on the weekends. Very rough rude kids with no parents. Overall it is clean and well cared for park with a lot to offer,

Forest Park

By priscilla w |

Forest Park is one of the best parks around. It is a great place for a picnic, to see the animals, have a pick-up game of baseball, or frisbee.or just take a brisk walk alone or with your pet. During the holidays Bright Nights is the most beautiful place to see Christmas displays, visit with Santa, and spend time with the kids and family. When you are in Springfield it is worth the visit.

Large park, great place

By Navigator627519 |

This is a great park with lots to do. The playground is a bit old and showing its age, but kids don't really care about that, too much. Parking was easy!

How lucky to live here with affordable housing to deserve such a wonderful park

By katherinec573 |

Forest Park in Springfield, Massachusetts is in super condition lately, it is safe clean and easy access for neighborhood residents. The fall is the best time to take a walk to enjoy the foliage scenery, and the best of all it is a hidden gem, this park is never overcrowded

A Very Enjoyable Four Hours at Forest Park

By Bill M |

We are visiting from out of state. Forest Park was a destination for us in Springfield and we were not disappointed. This park has beautiful natural areas a fine series of aquatic gardens with lotus in bloom, hiking trails, and pave walking paths. We enjoyed it all and so did our old traveling dogs. As a nature photographer I could spend days finding many interesting subjects in this 700 plus acre city park. The small zoo, playing fields, swimming and concession make this a family friendly and beautiful place to relax and spend a few hours or a day. We will be back! The 5 dollar out state entry fee was well worth it.

Beautiful But Long Wait in Stop and Go Traffic

By roughwinter |

The Bright Nights display from Christmas through New Year's is fantastic but the wait in your car in the traffic lines to get to the Forest Park entrance can be well over an hour long. Sometimes traffic spills out onto Interstate 91. I recommend it only for patient people. Bring something to occupy impatient kids while you wait.

By KIM422 |

Wow this was our first time and I really loved it... They do a great job with the Park...I would recommend this to families...

Great park

By Kim L |

While visiting the New England area, we chose Forest Park as a place to meet some old friends. The park is beautiful and relaxing. The kids loved the playground, zoo, "train" ride and duck pond. The snack shack near the zoo entrance had good selection, service, quality and prices. Recommended stop.

A walk to remember

By Jane D |

I go walking in Forest Park often with friends. One day we walked from the duck pond down into the woods then back up and all the way to Barney Mausoleum. I had been there many times in my childhood, but we stopped along the way to read all the signs. It is so historical.

By demaria |

Huge, beautiful park has everything for hikes, walks, duck feeding, pool playgrounds, baseball diamonds! The Zoo fantastic!! Check out the Carriage house. Weather you are alone, or with the family, It's good for the soul. Bright Nights Christmas Lights are a must!!!!

Bright Nights

By Maltipoo16 |

Excellent light display. Absolutely loved how the incorporated the hills the trees and the pond into the display. I’ve never seen anything like that.

Forest park a real gem

By stowe6vt |

Great park with wildlife , walking trails , great picnic areas along streams , little zoo and snack shack

By CM M |

Forest Park is a a gem - with lots of various activities. There are tennis courts, a swimming pool, a children's zoo, lots of birds to feed or view, and beautiful scenery. It's a great place to visit in the fall when the leaves turn color. And between Thanksgiving and New Year's, Bright Nights is a big draw.

Gem of a park in Western Massachusetts

By SnDArmstrong |

Duck ponds, walking trails, tennis courts, playgrounds, baseball diamonds, swimming pool, farmer's market, a great zoo and the holiday Bright Nights... what more could you ask for in a local park?? Great family destination, we take advantage of it year-round.

Bright Nights

By psully015 |

It’s spectacular! So many different themes! So many lights! You slowly drive at least a couple of miles past all the displays. You won’t be disappointed!

Feel Like A Kid Again!

By Donna S |

I am in my 50's and I had a blast. You sit in your car and drive it through Forest Park with your lights out. The displays are very creative and beautiful. I plan on going againt his year and I don't care if I have any kids int h car with me. I had a wonderful time!

By Ashlee S |

I have really fallen in love with Forest Park and can't get enough. The Olympic bars on the baseball fields are my favorite place to work on calisthenics ever! Jogging through is amazing and calming. Picnicking near the duck ponds with my husband is fantastic, and seeing everyone have a genuinely nice time is a wonderful addition to the city. Young or old, there's something here for everyone.

Bright Nights

By BoysMom3 |

Bright Nights is a great light display especially pretty when there is snow on the ground. Visitors drive through the park past many displays. Be prepared for long lines to get in on some nights.

Above average local farmer's market

By Stradinger |

When you're in the Springfield, MA area on a Tuesday, and want to visit Forest Park, be sure to catch the Farmer's Market where you'll find wonderful home grown/produced items.

We especially love Doce Mercer, known for corporate gift boxes and confections, but here at the local market with homemade Portuguese-style breads like English muffins, Portuguese rolls, and focaccia. Michelle and her daughter Martika offer excellent bread goods, and quite affordable, if not a wee bit underpriced in this economy. We're grateful for the good deals, but want them to stay in biz.

We also get our bakery breads from Berkshire Mountain Bakery, because their sourdough breads and pastries are the best anywhere. We find their breads life-changing because they're really breads, made with double fermentation and offering an amazing variety like jalepino-cheese ciabattas, San Francisco sourdough and baguettes. Amazing breads.

Tom's honey products and fresh farm eggs is another "can't miss" vendor, who even with the rising egg prices has kept his product very affordable.

Also we love Plum Island Jams, which have to be the best on the planet. The pineapple coconut is my fav, but there isn't one I can resist.

Of course we love fresh produce, and there are several choices at the market.

Families can also find picnic table where they can enjoy food truck fare from hot dogs to ice cream to pizza and more.

Then there's the park itself offering great scenery and a zoo.

Bright nights

By Tres0309 |

What a beautiful display..it's like being in Disneyworld during the holiday season. Displays are beautiful, well worth the money.

We love Forest Park Zoo & Bright Nights

By Tara M |

We really enjoy Forest Park Zoo. Cool animals that look well cared for. That's important to us!! We luv going to Bright Nights @ Forest Park every year! It's so much fun & really puts us in the holiday spirit too.

Drive Through Lights

By Annemarie C |

What a great way to see Holiday lights! The traffic of cars moves smoothly and slowly enough to enjoy. Large variety of light displays - there's something for everyone! Great job Springfield!

By Santadiva |

I live in NYC and drove the two hours on New Years Eve. We arrived a half-hour after it opened and had the park mostly to ourselves. There is an online coupon that provides a small discount. Even with just two people in the car, the experience was well worth the price and the drive. The illuminations were breathtaking and there were various theme areas such as toyland and Dr. Seuss. The area around the lake was particularly beautiful. There was a refreshment area with a shop, but we didn't stop. I suspect that the illuminations are the same each year, so I wouldn't make the trip each season. Then again, if you do some shopping and go out to eat as well, this would make for a lovely day out during the holidays. I will definitely return and highly recommend making the trip.

Quiet, restful and interesting

By Fran H |

There's a little something for everyone. A great place to walk through or bicycle. A petting zoo for the children. Many gardens blooming throughout the warmer seasons. A great place to recreate, Baseball fields, Tennis and even Bocci.

Beautiful large city park

By Cliff T |

Unexpected beautiful park. Very large with a zoo, gardens, waterfalls and great hiking trails. Spend several hours , here

By jaydynomite |

Forest Park is fairly large, with plenty of picnic and jogging room. There is a tiny zoo and some soccer fields, and you can feed the ducks in the pond. The real draw to the park is the dazzling array of Christmas lights, but lines can be long and Christmas cheer is not always in evidence with some drivers.

Great Lights

By nickamberger |

If you have a family with small children then this is the place for the price to take them . I am certain they will have a fantastic time.

2014 lights

By yanks250125 |

Good show but traffic moved along slower than in years past. The entire way took about 45 minutes. Tons of lights and good displays, but it seems as there's nothing new as I've been going for each of the past 5 years or so. Cost was $21 on weekends but coupons are all over the place.

By Mike D |

The bright lights drive is a show everyone should see. It is a wait for the turn to drive in but just plan ahead. Bring the food and hit the bathroom but tune into the FM station.95.1 and listen to Elf Radio on the way in. It really is lots of fun. Go for it.

By micmaqprincess |

Forest Park is a park that is equipped with picnic spots with grills. 2 ponds with ducks and a big grassy field with baseball diamonds. The zoo is small but is cool to say the least. Afterwards you can play at the playground and ride the train then get something to eat at the parks concession stand. Nice place to visit for the day.

Jogging

By Howard L |

Nice park to Jog to from Longmeadow, i like all the trees around the trails, makes it feel like your own private path. you can take multiple trails, sometimes its gets a little crowded on a nice day but thats typical of a park. Great in the fall too.

By WMAMom |

Forest Park is a great place to spend the day with your family. The park requires a minimal entry fee ($2). The area includes a rose garden, a petting zoo, multiple picnic sites, a pool, a water play area (name for place where water shoots from a cement floor and chidlren are allowed to run through the area?), playgrounds, multiple landscaped ponds at which you can observe and feed waterfowl. Bicycling is allowed. There are parking spots throughout so that you don't have to park and walk the entire place.

There is a separate fee for the zoo. The zoo is well-maintained and the animals apparently well-cared for. A small storefront is on the premises. You can buy proper food for the animals for $1. The store also sells games, stuffed animals, and some baby and toddler clothes with images of animals. I think there are adult-sized t-shirts and sweatshirts, but that is not something to which I've paid much attention.

There is a train which children can ride with their parents, which affords a view of much of the park. The train boards near the entrance to the zoo. There is an additonal charge for the train.

Snacks and beverages are available. I pack food so I don't know the specifics.

My family enjoys a season pass. Not only are there so many opportunities for exercise and play, it is a great place to take pictures. The landscaping is incredible and includes a wide variety of flowers in multiple areas.

Great

By Joseph O |

A winter wonderland, have taken grand kids here over the years. A great family outing, setting all into the Christmas mood.

Local treasure!

By PeaceSalaamShalom |

Forest Park is a gem! Over 700 acres, with ponds, playgrounds, walking paths, a petting zoo, rose garden, and more! Small entrance fee of $3 (MA car license)/$5 (out-of-state) but it's worth it. Many residents have yearly passes. You can also park on side streets and walk into the park for free. NOTE: Sumner Ave. entrance is currently closed (except for access to tennis courts) due to repairs of culvert. Use entrance on Trafton Road instead.

Didn't meet any coyotes

By CatUK78 |

The sign regarding coyotes didn't fill me with excitement!! Luckily we didn't meet any. Kids enjoyed the play area for a while, although some of the equipment was broken. Visited the washroom which was clean for a park..I've seen worse. Overall the park is not a bad place to spend an hour or two.

Wow

By Jim Athas |

What a hidden gem it's a beautiful park take a walk by the amphitheater and walk by the Lilly pads it's very peaceful.

A real gem in Springfield

By citidwel |

Forest Park has really undergone a make over since I grew up in the area in the 60s. The rose garden is back and the duck pond has a beautiful cobblestone path around it. The old zoo is gone, luckily. If you want a great place to have a picnic or take a nature walk or run, this is it. Was surprised that there is an admission fee but it's worth the $5 for an out of state license place.

Great for walks and picnics

By Richelle I |

We visit this park often after medical appt. For my dtr.
Cost is $5/car for out of state license
The park is pretty big. There are different areas to park and walk (sidewalks). The flowers are beautiful.
We like the rose garden area, and the pond best.
This past visit we noticed a lot of trash in the pond.
Bring a picnic, there are lots of little picnic areas
Public restrooms
Fields to play ball or throw a Frisbee
the zoo is an additional charge (kids loved it when they were younger- suitable for older kids too).
The best when they were little was the splash pad area outside the pool area...it was free and there are benches for parents to sit and watch. No checking in....you just walk up to the area.
This is a great and cheap place to visit

amazing

By James T |

forest park is amazing. it is a major part of springfield..the zoo is amazing..the buildings are amazing..the management is amazing..the entire area is amazing

Christmas Lights Plus

By TravelNut004 |

One of the top ten Christmas lights displays in the US in one the largest in-city parsk in the United States (735 acres of everything a park should have). Open from Thanksgiving to New Years Eve it's a drive through Doctor Seuss Winter Wonderland.

Great Christmas Experience

By Frank N |

A great place for all especially kids and seniors. It is a way to enjoy the Christmas season with the family and not be cold doing so.

A GEM!

By JimShultis |

Forest Park is a beautiful park in an urban setting. It's only a little smaller than Central Park in NYC and it has playgrounds, a rose garden, duck ponds, picnic areas, forest paths and smooth walking trails that are excellent for seniors. There's a small zoo. It's not expensive, in fact as a senior resident of Springfield, I got an annual pass for $7. I've found a score of peaceful places to walk and sit.

Magical

By Auntie Nini |

Get there early to avoid crowds of car. Magical ride through the park with loads and loads of lights. Took my mom and niece had a wonderful tim.

Very beautiful

By Tranquility A |

I really enjoyed myself. I was invited to a picnic there. I was quite surprised at how big it is. So pretty and green. Plenty of things to do. I just luv the zoo. My favorite.

Bright Nights a must see

By betsyflowers |

Please come up to Springfield to see the festival of bright lights in Forest Park...it is an amazing display and an annual event for our family!

Beautiful but too small

By Tatej66 |

Great little Zoo in the Springfield area but it is small and it doesnt take long to see all the attractions. If you are planning a day in Springfield you might want to include the museums or the Springfield Armory as well. Activities are geared for a younger group..Clean and well run facility

Great park for activities and families

By deadrock |

My husband and I were married in the Carriage House at Forrest Park so it hold a special place in my heart. It is a lovely park to walk around or have a picnic. There is a small Zoo there to bring the kids and they have playgrounds for the children to enjoy.

Beautiful park

By Cheryl W |

I walk here regularly the scenery is beautiful. There is a zoo and train (seasonal). Ball fields, picnic areas and duck ponds. The winter has Bright Nights.

Sunday Morning Inner Peace

By Erin F |

On Sunday mornings my husband and I go to Forest Park to listen to the birds. I take my camera, and he takes his binoculars. There are red-winged blackbirds, bluebirds, mourning doves, sparrows. The Aquatic Gardens is the most peaceful place in all of Springfield. It builds a peace of mind that sustains us through the whole week of hectic activity in modern life.

Very nice park!!

By Bob G |

What a wonderful, beautiful park. We visited while exploring the zoo. They have beautiful duck ponds, tons of picnic tables, a place to get lunch, baseball field, pool, splash pad, and hiking areas! Spend the day here! So nice!

My hometown park

By gjsbill |

Have enjoyed FP since I was a kid. I like to park the car and walk around the park. There are different sections: the kiddie zoo which is great for people of all ages, the rose garden, the lily ponds where you might spot a heron or two. Nice spot to sit on a bench and relax by the brook. There are picnic areas, tennis courts, baseball diamonds & a swimming pool. Check to see if & when the pool opens. There is a small admission fee.

Very nice when it is not particularly crowded

By Peter C |

This is a very nice park with several different sections, including some very nice water features. Nice for walking, biking, relaxing, picnics. However, lately the park has not been maintaining their picnic tables as several of them are broken and haven't been fixed. It is a shame to pay for park entry and have to hunt for a picnic table in a nice quiet spot that you can actually sit on.

Great City Park

By COTraveller33 |

Multiple activities - basketball, duck ponds, zoo, playground, tennis courts, etc.

Pro
- TONS to do
- easy to get to
- $3 - 5 entrance fee

Cons
- more cost for "out-of-towners"
- needs a bit of cleaning
- needs maps at front gate for those who ask for them

By Alfonse M |

Springfield and Holyoke must have been something great in 1935. Forest Park used to be a beautiful place where people could hike or spend a quietly satisfying Sunday afternoon. Alas, no more. This entire area has economically collapsed leaving very little if anything to recommend it. The poverty and crime rates are among the highest in the country. I wouldn't set foot in forest Park for fear of my safety.

Bright Nights was wonderful

By ramsdesk |

A must visit place during Christmas holidays. The entire park is lit up with various types of decorative lights. You can go traverse the park in you car without getting down.
There are various figurines and holiday themes lighting all over the park.
They charge $21 for entry (you could get $3 discount if you could take the printout of the coupon from their website). It's completely worth the money and time.

This is a beautiful Park

By Kathy T |

Loved our visit to Forest Park. It is one of the few places I remembered from when I was a child and lived in Springfield. It was so much fun to go back. It looks totally different but is still very beautiful! It would be a great place to take the family. There is a nice play ground and small zoo. Call first about the zoo, it was closed the day we visited. Would highly recommend

Great place for familes

By Leo7151 |

Great kid's petting zoo, relaxing place to have a picnic, and a quiet place on the fringe of the city.

Forest Park: Fun for family

By Tomira R |

Whenever I travel to Forest Park in Springfield, Mass, I always visit Forest Park. It's small, quiet and a nice getaway inside the city limits. Parking fee is fair for out-of-towerners like me. I would gladly pay it just to get away for a couple of hours. I can honestly say that Forest Park is one of my favorite destinations when I get away to Springfield, Mass.

Did I mention that it's quiet? I enjoy the peace and the beautiful rose garden. My kids love the playground and Zoo.

I usually go during the late morning or afternoon, weekday. This is the best time for walkers, and moms with kids to enjoy the quiet of the day without distractions.

Bright Nights : )

By Brian |

I visited here with my parents and my girlfriend and we had an amazing time for their great Bright Nights display. If you are not from around this area I would highly recommend checking out this hotspot during the Christmas season. Its a little pricey coming in at $21 a car load but just bring a van with 8 people to ease the cost.

They have a stop where you can also go on a carriage ride through the park as well as buy many winter favorites such as hot chocolate or other food, I would recommend driving an automatic car because you average around 5mph the whole time so it's difficult to play with the clutch for that length of time you are in the park.

You can listen along on a local radio station as you drive through the park. Bring a camera to take tons of pictures while you are on your visit.

Nice park

By GarciaEmelie |

Great specious park to run and walk..in the summer the zoo is open and they also have train. Its must see in Dec for brightnights its a drive thru winter wonderland of lights, they also have a merry go round and santa is there for a few hours for pictures.over its a nice park to visit year around.

a beautiful place, for kids, adults,

By James M |

A place to relax view the animals, it's a great family place to stop by and see. And at Christmas time a just is bright lights.

By SpfldTom |

For those who don't know, this is one of the largest city parks in the country. It was designed by the renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead. Although it hasn't received the investment in maintenance that it deserves it still is a remarkable place to walk, picnic and take pictures. Children will enjoy the ducks and geese on the several ponds. One of my favorite spots is a glorious statue of the Three Graces near the Barney Mausoleum.

Bright Nights - One of my favorite places to visit during the holiday season.

By LovesToTravel716 |

Going out to Bright Nights has become an annual tradition for the last 6 or 7 years. I pick up my advanced ticket at Big Y and it saves a bit of time when arriving at the entrance. For the last 2 years, I have visited Bright Nights with three of my best friends. We've gone in late November on a Monday or Tuesday night and it's been quite pleasant. No long backup to get in and the crowds are minimal. I will never again go on a weekend night! Although the displays don't change much over the years, it's still a nice place to visit to get you into the holiday spirit!

By sarajane4 |

Forest Park is a very beautiful park in Springfield, Ma. It's a huge park. Even bigger than the average person may think after visting it. In grade school we had a program called ECOs where they take us in to the hills and show us around forest and teach us to build shelters and bring some nature to us city kids. It's a huge park. There are several play grounds, a zoo, several gardens, several baseball fields, basket ball hoops, bocci court, tennis courts. a snack bar, a public pool, an ice skating rink, several ponds there is one that was made for feeding ducks, There are several historic monuments, such as statues, a rebuilt carridge house, that is a replica of the man who donated the land to the city and a masoluem. The park is very picturesque, and very beautiful.Definalty bring your camera if your going to be spending your day there. Also in this Holiday season they have Bright Nights and they set up light all over the park and you can drive through, it's really pretty.

Beautiful

By Eric M |

They had a farmers market the day we went. The park is beautiful and well maintained. Bring the kids for the free water park , a picnic,or a nature walk.

This is the best thing about Forest Park

By hat22013 |

Bright Nights is great!!! A lot of fun for everyone. This is the best part of Forest Park. Wish Forest Park was this enjoyable in the summer. Not nice at all in the summer. Very bad quality of people.

Great place to stop on the way through the area.

By Guelphwanderer |

We stayed in Springfield to break up a long drive over two days, and wanted to get a sense of the city while here. Forest Park (and the neighbourhood around it) were a nice detour. The park itself is very charming. We walked through the aquatic pond to spot turtles and frogs, played in the children's area, and then toured the zoo. Initially we had meant to stay for about an hour, but ended up staying for closer to three.
The park is clean, feels safe, and is lots of fun.

Playground was awesome

By Monica G |

We entered this park looking for the zoo, couldn't find the zoo but there are other things to see and do with kids. We had to pay $5 to drive through, didn't receive a map and basically drove in circles for a half hour till we found the playground and figured we may as well play because we paid to enter. We will NOT be back as we can find a free playground if need be

Bright nights

By Tina E |

Was wonderful to go for the holidays just a little bit pricey put the kids did enjoy all the lights love the new mgm light pretty cool

Excellent Daycation!

By Nina H |

When I was young, Forest Park served as my daily "playground" That was years ago ... and things have changed. The once open and free park has been redone. The lions and elephants are gone, but in their place is a delightful zoo for young children, numerous picnic areas, playgrounds, little food stands, and acres of beauty. IT is easy for a family to spend the day and, although I thought the zoo was a little pricey, all in all it was worth it.
I don't live in the area any longer, but I will certainly return!

Christmas lights are amazing

By Jen J |

I have gone for the past 3 years to see the Christmas lights and they are just beautiful. These have to be the best lights around. Worth the money and so much fun for all ages.

Forest Park, best park in Springfield area

By jeffrey c |

Forest Park has a lot of history. The park is huge. It has ball fields, a zoo, cook out areas, a pool, a playground, a duck pond and among many other things a Bright Night light show to drive thru during Christmas time. I've seen it many times. I think I costs a little much, but worth it to see it for the first time.

By Liquid6 |

Worth the ride and every penny. A cool family treat. If you have access to a convertible - keep the top down and the heat cranked up!

Well maintained Springfield gem

By Marie D |

I LOVE taking a casual walk or fat burning jog! Friendly regulars. Great for dog walking. Baseball diamondseason for pick up games.
Great for casual family outdoor gatherings.

One of my favorite local parks.

By amberandy |

For the amount of visitors visiting the park it is well kept and clean. Many trash barrels, recycling bins, bench seats and picnic benches throughout. You can enjoy the zoo, train ride (smaller kids), throw a ball or Frisbee, watch a baseball game, feed the ducks, admire the beautiful trees and flowers, read a book on a quiet park bench, plan an outdoor party with provided grills, or bring some money and buy food, drinks and ice-cream there. They also have a spray park, swimming pool and swan boats (which we have yet to use). Maybe if your lucky you can find a dinosaur track or two. One of my favorite local places to visit in the summer with the family or by myself. Been going for years and always enjoy it.

The Christmas lights are special

By Sally60763 |

The Christmas light show at Forest Park is worth a trip, especially with kids. Beautiful park.

By casperkgb |

we traveled from upstate NY just to bring the kids to a zoo....but we fell in love with the park...its 5.00 a car and worth every penny...bocce courts...ball fields playgrounds...this place was just great to spend a day in...We went for the first time yesterday and are already looking to bring our friends back for a day...

Lovely spot for a walk

By georgeandgracie46 |

We wanted to get a walk in on our way home after a weekend trip. This is a lovely park with ponds and waterways. The entrance fee was reasonable and we were happy to pay since the park is so well maintained.

It is a great spot for an easy stroll or a more strenuous hike.

Wonderful, especially if you went when you were a kid

By SLCohen |

Aesthetically beautiful, large and expansive, amenities include: ball field, zoo, swimming pool, nature walks, tennis.

Brilliant "Bright Lights"

By ceejay01Uk |

We were there to see the bright lights Christmas lights, purely by chance as we were passing. They were the best light show of its type we have seen, superb. A 3 Mile slow drive through a winter wonderland . You can stop for refreshments but we did not. My advice would be to go and see, look out Blackpool and Disney world

Love the animals

By Debra P |

We try to visit Forest Park every time we are in Springfield. We love the zoo and the train ride that takes you around the park. The staff was also very nice, and their is a stand outside the zoo for ice cream. There is a gift shop inside the zoo where the prices are reasonable. It really is a very pretty park and well maintained.

Christmas Lights

By Carol H |

Go Early and the line is less. A great way to start the Christmas season. Drive thru listening to your favorite Christmas songs. Kids loved it and so did I

Vast urban park for relaxing

By Timothy R |

Well maintained park that is a vast area within the City of Springfield. Ample parking with excellent facilities to walk or bike. Nice place to spend time with family. A small zoo is added bonus.

A piece of heaven in Springfield. The zoo needs to go. It's not right to the animals.

By R G |

Clean. Serene. Remarkable. History. A great park. I only hope one day the zoo will not have live animals like they have now. It's cruel no matter how you look at it. Educational for the children you say? You take a look at the animals they have their, the whole zoo is no bigger than a large back yard. An adult can walk the outside perimeter in five minutes. 150 animals. I know their well looked after but what did they do to end up in prison for life. They had a lion at one point. The animal abuse laws are a joke.

Come and see the beauty of Bright Nights!!!!

By luisaR6350FF |

We live half a block from Forest Park in Springfield, and I walked in this beautiful park almost everyday (when the weather is not so bad...) even being so close every year I go to Bright Nights it is sooo magical, if you come try to do it during week days otherwise the traffic jam to enter the park will annoy and disturb you. It is really nice and beautiful, bring your kids, friends, family and enjoy this spectacle of Christmas, you won't be disappointed!!!
They have caneen gift shop and during weekends Santa is tehre to take pictures with the kids. You pay the fee when entering the park then you low your beam lights, set the radio and you are ready to enjoy!!!!

Cool park

By GarciaEmelie |

Very cool for winter bright lights a drive thru Christmas light show,in the summer a sprinkler and a zoo the zoo is extra charge. and there is a baseball field yes u can cookout there are grills but get there early.also you can ride the train around the park for a fee.

Gotta go every year.

By Linda |

It was good the first year, and created much needed money for the city. But after that, its now just a tradition that we have to do. Recently, I don't think anything new has been added.

It’s good in the summer and the winter!

By ButterfliesQueen |

I love Forest Park, designed by the renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted! And it truly shows, I love going early in the mornings before the crowd noise takes over the nature sounds! It’s a beautiful place, not to missed! My boys love it!

Bright nights

By Becky33333 |

Bright nights is a wonderful event we go to at least once every holiday season. It's a beautiful light display that you drive through.

Great City Park, and the Christmas Drive Through is a MUST DO

By JBMartiniguy |

Forest Park has been a city favorite for decades. In the upper park there are fields for sports, a children's petting zoo, and a city pool. To me, the best park of the year round park is the lower areas where the ponds and pedestrian traffic takes a slower pace.

And in the Christmas season, the Suess themed "Winter Lights" are worth the wait at least once..

If you are looking for a quiet place in the city, Forest Park is it

Will never go again

By Cheryle R |

Just got back. Zoo was okay and nice playground but there are no park rangers or anyone else watching what's going on. Went to splash pad and there were kids riding bikes around and threw it. Kids almost got run over. Altercation with people there swearing and letting kids run wild and mistreating a turtle. No one around to do anything

Beautiful hidden gem!

By fivehuskys |

What a pleasant surprise this place was - gorgeous landscaped grounds, ducks to feed and plenty of places to have a picnic. The zoo was closed so I can't comment on the condition of the animals there.

Love it There Year Round

By Becki G |

Bright Nights is a wonderful thing to see , yes indeed! But Forest Park is so much more than that. I love the scenery here year round, but am partial to springtime when the trees are in bloom and flowers bring even more color.

There are duck ponds and trails. You can see geese, swans, and mallards. There bridges and, a little further afield, statues and interesting architecture.

Spend a few bucks and go in their small zoo. They have the usual suspects such as goats and other farm animals, camels, peacocks, and reptiles. But they also have bears, wolves, a leopard, monkeys, and even wallabies.

There are snack bars onsite if you find yourself getting hungry (they're not the best, not the worst, and prices are meh, but they're there if you need them! ) Bring a lunch. There are plenty of benches or grasslands to throw down a blanket.

By outdoorfamily7711 |

I Found the park was very clean and enjoyable. There were swimming pools, tennis courts, basketball courts , lawn bowling, rose gardens, duck pounds, the zoo was among the cleanest I have ever been to . The animals all looked happy and healthy and there was a great variety the kids really enjoyed it.

By Joanne Saltman |

I grew up coming here but it has deteriorated over the years-perhaps a neighborhood group of voluteers could do something to spruce it up.

relaxing

By May Smiles |

It is great to have such a nice open space in a city. The zoo is a great up close and personal experience with the animals. The kids loved feeding the animals. It is so large you really can spend the whole day there. The only downside was the cost of a ride on the train. My son was looking forward to it but it was just too pricy.

A brother/sister of Central Park in NYC

By mostly_happy_camper |

Designed by Fredrick Law Olmsted and very nearly as large as his acclaimed Central Park in Manhattan. Huge. Even a bit more lovely than Central Park, IMO. I have enjoyed both!

Well worth visiting.

Playgrounds, walking trails, easy strolls, and at Christmas -- lighting displays; also picnic grounds, basketball courts, lawn bowling and bocci lanes. A zoo! And more.

Suffering, I think, a tiny bit in step with the late 20th and, now, 21st century, economic decline of this once-important USA city of Springfield. Not enough, though, to not go. (Be aware, out of state licensed cars cost $5 to enter and park; Mass plates $3).

P.S. Lots of other very interesting and worthwhile sites to visit in Springfield. Including -- but only -- the basketball hall of fame, the Dr. Seuss museum, the Springfield Armory (the first in the USA) with an absolutely fabulous collection of military pistols and rifles, the Titanic Museum -- small but very good, and not least of all, the Springfield Thunderbirds hockey games/arena, now affiliated with the NHL Flordia Panthers, formerly the Springfield Indians, a founding member of the AHL starting back in 1925 or 1926. Don't miss a game at the MassMutual Center, a really nice AHL ice arena.

A RELAXING OASIS IN THE CITY

By Ed G |

It is a great place to go with a family. You can have a picnic, get a train ride, feed the ducks and take a leisurely walk. The city did a wonderful job refurbishing the park .There are beautiful gardens and a nice children zoo .I enjoy going there to take pictures of the flowers and various wildlife there.

Great for kids of all ages

By LAP10 |

I've been to Forest Park a number of times. There is a lot to do at the park including picnicing, water sprinklers, swings, and a great zoo. It is worth a trip and the money.

fun..ŕelax

By Maddy A |

Having been born and raised in Springfield, I have long time memories of Forest Park. There are fields for sports,, a zoo, a sprinkler pool for summer, a indoor ice skating arena a train ride around the park, multiple picnic a easy with grills,, a duck pond area, can feed the ducks, hiking trails and biking...and Bright Nights Holiday light display in the winter. There are also a couple of good playgrounds and a snack bar. Yout should go.

pine tree heaven

By bmx47g |

this park is the best in the city with its pine tree forrest, baseball fields, zoo, swimming pool, basketball courts and of course its indoor skating rink

Nothing compares. Worth it

By Getaway607022 |

Oh I missed this!! I used to live in Springfield and we went every year since my son was born until I moved. I lived in NJ and VA since then and none compared to Bright Nights . The deer dancing overhead.. .the Horse Drawn Carriage.. etc etc. Anyone that leaves a bad review? Is the Grinch...

Make it a point to see....worth it. I am an adult and loved it just as much as my son

What a green gem in the city...

By DaryllSS |

Beautifully sculpted lily ponds, fun playscape for kids, the snack shack, THE ZOO, grounds to roam and hills to climb and nooks that are pretty enough for a wedding.

Bright Nights

By ElliesBoo |

We brought our almost 8-year old grandson to see the Bright Nights exhibit at Forest Park, Springfield and found it to be beautifully done. As we drove slowly through, comfortably seated in our car, we marveled at all kinds of Seuss characters, angels, a creche, dinosaurs, reindeer, Santa, etc. etc. all created with lights. My favorite was a toy soldier, about 12 feet tall, on the left side of the road, lowering a match to a cannon, causing a cannonball to fly over the road and hit the ground on the right sight with a big (silent) explosion of light...all done only with lights! And the frog jumping into the pond was pretty cool, too.
My grandson seemed less enthralled. Kids today are SO sophisticated! Perhaps if we had been able to take him when he was younger... I'm sure a 4 or 5-year old would love it and a child with a creative bent might, too, at any age. While our little guy looked at it all in near silence, he did not complain and he did pay attention but his non-response was a bit of a disappointment for us. I think we may have enjoyed it more than he did.

beautiful location

By woody096 |

This park has many features. There is a zoo, ice skating rink, baseball field, bocci,
picnic areas, pond with ducks, flower gardens, playgrounds. I have seen wedding parties there taking photos. There is also a little train(on wheels) for the kids--not sure when and how often it runs. From Thanksgiving to a little after New Years there is Bright Lights--a large light display that is rated as one of the top sights in the country. ty.
Lots of people use the park for jogging and walking. This area used to be owned by the Barney family and was given to the city. There is a large house--the Barney Mansion there and often people use the area for weddings.

By KatieC165 |

Definitely a blast and really cool! There are a ton of different lights and set ups, so it's always fun to see. There is usually a ridiculous wait though, so make sure to plan that in your night as well!

Great Park

By miscrambler |

Springfield's Forest Park is part urban oasis, part playground, part wilderness. Its 795 acres are all worth exploring. I am lucky that my new house is in walking distance. We're there at least once a week. Check out the summer farmer's market -- a knockout. Haven't been to the zoo yet; we're saving that for when our niece and nephew visit later in the year.

Lovely Urban Park

By Alison S |

Springfield is so blessed to have this large, gorgeous park. Many lakes and ponds, accessible to all. Also lots of trails for those who want to get off the beaten path. Ballfields. Farmers' market.

Nice park

By Gail V |

Nice park for jogging or walking but not worth the $5 entrance fee. Perhaps on days that the zoo is open it includes the fee for the zoo? Otherwise waste of money.

Great place for frisbee and people watching

By Kym M |

Forest park is iconic. It has always been a great go to place to take the kids to feed the ducks or see the zoo. It is also a super place to hang out and throw a frisbee, play tennis or just walk around and meet people. I think if you are looking for something to do on a lazy day forest park is always a great spot.

A first class park--well worth the trip

By Lois B |

This park is magnificent. It is said to have been designed by Olmstead who created NY's Central Park. It became run down but I am thrilled to say that it has been restored and is now even better than I remember it as a child.
There are open grassy areas, lakes, streams with little bridges and banks to sit on, trails for walking, lotuses growing in a pond, lovely rare trees, a rose garden, a baseball field, hills, views, places for picnics complete with tables. I would like to just go back and lie on a blanket and read a book, this place is so peaceful
Children can run around and they can feed the ducks. There is a small zoo. In winter the park is illuminated with Bright Nights. There is only one entrance now, from rte 5 in Longmeadow and you have to pay a little bit to get in. But this change in policy has made a difference and the park is now beautiful again and extremely well cared for. Spend a day with the family--it's so pretty and so relaxing.

A local treasure

By Sue R |

- I have gone to Forest Park since I was a child. It is well kept; beautiful year round. So many memories and today the park looks even prettier than it did back then. Small fee; you can picnic, bring charcoal and you can grill; playgrounds, zoo, duck ponds, the Barney House for weddings, ceremonies, sunsets.....beauty in Springfield

Great park

By apeavey |

Winter brings Bright Nights, which is a lovely seasonal event of lights, Santa, hot chocolate, etc. Pretty reasonable and charming.
During the year, the park is a relaxed and very large venue for walking, picnicing, and spending time with kids. Prices are reasonable for snacks, hotdog/hamburger fare and ice cream. The train through the park is a favorite, although I think a bit over priced. Zoo is great for little ones.

By tflaherty72 |

On a recent spring afternoon my young family and I travelled from southern Connecticut to spend an afternoon in Forest Park. We were delighted to find Forest Park to be so vibrant with many other young families enjoying the beautiful afternoon. It was really refreshing to see such a beautiful park being accessed by so many families. On every baseball diamond there was a game, the same goes for the basketball courts. Three- quarters of the picnic tables were being used by families celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, and reunions. Our young daughter really enjoyed the zoo, train ride, and playground area. I had been to Forest Park as a youth and found it even more enjoyable as an adult. The cleanliness of the park was something that we were also very impressed with. I've been fortunate enough to visit some other great urban escapes such as Central Park, Golden Gate Park, and Balboa Park. In my opinion Forest Park ranks among the best.

What a great Park

By Joan K |

This is a beautiful large park that offers walking and hiking trails, a zoo, gardens, fountains and water gardens. It is huge and a wonderful piece of greenery in the city. What a treat for people to stoll, walk, run, jog and view the Holiday Lights were are so imaginative and incredible....well worth the visit day or night

Peaceful and scenic getaway on the edge of Springfield. Leisurely walk through the water gardens away from the bustle and noise of the city.

Bright Nights was GREAT!

By MammaShibs |

On a recent Monday girl's night out we decided to visit Bright Nights. The line was short to get in. Weekday price was $18.00 and they offer a coupon on-line. Price is $21.00 on the weekend and holidays.
None of had been recently and the trip brought back memories of previous visits, including the leaping frog and reindeer jumping over your car!
Great displays of lighting, great job all around!
If you have never been, it is worth the visit!

Brightnights

By Jo-AnnAlbano |

I grew up going to forest park. It has changed alot over the years but I still love it. We go to Bright nights every year. It is great family time. I also like going during the summer to walk the grounds.

Great Park

Beautiful scenery...perfect place to take a de-stressing walk...there is always something going on; baseball games, the zoo, family picnics, etc...never boring inside FP...

By POTCLover |

as long as your 4-year-old can stand waiting in the car line...but once you are in, they love it. His grandparent's also took him sledding there when he was small, and he really enjoyed that as well.

Heaven in green

By David W |

I was born in the city of Springfield and have since lived all over the country. Besides family it is places like Forest Park that keep me coming back and the reason I still live here today. Too many people take this park for granted or don't bother to visit it at all. This is truely one of the great city parks in america. Designed by the same man that designed Central Park in NYC it is a beautiful and relaxing place that has something for almost everyone. If you have a chance come see what heaven might look like in green or come in the christmas season for Bright Nights and see it in white.

Bright nights is well worth a visit!

By Sean M |

We come from out of town every year and drive through with the kids, it is their favorite thing to see. This has become a family tradition and we hope to do it for a long time!

birthday party

By angela b |

took grandchildren to a birthday party, they have a nice pool, play ground, big field, zoo and train you have to pay for, concession stand and lake and nice place to walk

Beautiful light display

By allforuamber |

The light displays are beautiful. The rates are reasonable and it is a great time to go and take it all in with the family. The spirit of Christmas is all around. We take a trip up every year just for this experience.

Great photo opportunities. Bring peanuts and feed the cute black squirrels and friendly chipmunks.

By Cassandra C |

My sister and I come here every time I visit. We get a bag of peanuts in the shell and some bread and we go feed the black squirrels (which are grey squirrels with a mutation), the bluejays, and the chipmunks. There are absolutely great photo opportunities: roses in the summer, foliage in the fall, and ducks and swans, and walking trails all over. It's a nice way to spend the afternoon.

Bright Nights- worth the trip

By Travelers |

So well worth the 2 hour trip, it was amazing, exciting and I agree a little magical, even as a adult visitng, I would recommend it to everyone, you should go and visit this once.

Farmer's Market is a boost to this very old park that still is needed.

By Muncha_Ocala |

Every Tuesday is a Farmer's Market in the "old" Forest Park & admission is Free if you are coming to the Farmer's Market. This park needs the boost because many locals still rely on it for leisure & activities as well as picnicking and swimming in the summer months. The animals are gone & they are known for their Christmas light extravaganza, but during the year there are other things to do here.

Great place for everyone!

By Ftboy07 |

Forest Park is a very beautiful park to visit. There is an entrance fee and if you are not a Massachusetts resident the fee is $5.00. There is a decent size zoo that is at an extra charge but again nothing that'll break the bank. You can bring food into this park and even have a cookout here. If you like walking this is the place for you! Make sure to take a walk up to the house that used to be owned by the original owner of the property who donated this massive park to the city of Springfield. Have a great time.

A wonderful place to unwind

By Martha R |

We visited some museums in the morning. Came to the park in the afternoon and the kids could run and play outside in a good environment with plenty of playgrounds.

A park to remember, not to be missed

Beautiful park, away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Springfield. Could spend hours among the flowers, trees, zoo, picnic areas, and still not see everything.

Best Park around!

Christmas tradition

By karenkaren4242 |

Our family have to go every year! A evening down Christmas pass, childhood memories of Beautiful lights in motion. Worth the money. Just when you think its over there is more! The family can stop to see Santa and get some winter snacks.

By 102Drive |

You should try something new...it seems like the same old stuff every winter. I've been 3-4 times in the past 5 years and It never seems to change.

A Wonderful Place to Visit

By Elizabeth T |

Summer fun in Forest Park could be watching an evening ball game or just a stroll by the ball fields. Maybe you want a great place to hold an outdoor birthday party. My grandson likes to feed the ducks. There are so many things to do in Forest Park. In the Summer there is swimming in the pools, and the Farmer;s Market on Tuesdays. There are many tennis courts. There is a children's playground where families can rest and their children get to play with the myriad of others there. The Zoo is a popular place for children too. During December the park is lighted at night with the Bright Nights Lights, a popular attraction for many. So no matter what he season there is something to do at Forest Park. Oh did I mention, a great place to walk or run.

A perfect place for a walk!

By JJEch1964 |

The park is well-maintained with very little car activity and a lovely place to walk the dog, run or bike. Lots of hills, scenic paths and ponds with lots of water fowl and friendly park-goers. More lively up around the zoo, especially in summer, where soccer, baseball and picnic areas are full of activity. Very lucky to live near such a gem and to have frequented it for the last 25 years!

Eye Opening

By Frank V |

If you have the Opportunity to bring your family to this Spectacular event, it will be an unforgetable experience
Children as well as adults are blown away by the displays and Christmas music playing on the radio, you can stop and visit Santa while driving thru this Magical Place

Great Haven in a City

By SarcasticadaStare |

Forest Park... it's diversified atmosphere is WONDERFUL. There are numerous tennis courts, fields for ALL types of ball playing, Frisbee and kite flying, a swimming pool (seasonal), a benched area for the elderly to socialize and play horse shoes and bocce ball. Picnic tables & grills. Party pavilions and paved roadways for walking. On the other side of the park is a "quiet" area... it's rather a relaxed area. A great place to walk, reading, talk, pack in & out picnicking and general relaxation (my favorite part). Also, Forest Park comes alive during the holidays with BRIGHT NIGHTS ~ a must see light up winter wonderland.
Highly Recommended!!!!!

Beautiful Park

It was a rainy day so we just drove through the park and enjoyed the view.
Its an oasis in Springfield.

yearly trip

By Pamela K |

pretty lights about the same every year. a little pricey for the drive. you can get discounts at local places

great urban park

By efpub |

Forest Park in Springfield is a great urban park, with enough space to let you feel surrounded by the forest but still useful features like baseball diamonds, picnic sites, etc.
Parking the car and taking a long walk through the park lets you take in the different scenery, down to the lake. Even just driving through the park and out again is relaxing. The zoo is a nice added feature (separate admission fee).
(I'm not a huge fan of the Bright Nights light display in the winter, since I'd prefer the park in its natural state, but I know a lot of other people do enjoy it.)

A gem in Springfield!

By Sona H |

Wahoo! Forest Park is a must see in Springfield! I stumbled through it during a morning walk around my hotel and I can't believe how nice it was. Don't go in with a car, have a nice hike all around it and you'll love it.

Nice park for good weather

By tsiong |

We had a cold day. And middle of the week so honestly not much to do. What you could see that in good weather this could be a great destination for a picnic. Park is well maintained and has lots of space.

A gem of a park

By Peter S |

A wonderful place for a walk, picnic, or just spending time with your family or alone in nature. I especially love the water garden section.

Spectacular park to visit - MUST SEE

By Sting89 |

We decided to visit this park that just around the corner from where my son lives during our first visit. It was a pleasant surprise how large and beautiful this park had to offer to everyone. This park has something for everyone of all ages . It charges $3 for MA residence and $5 for non residents per vehicle .

Entertaining

By Raym0914 |

After several years of being in the area, we decided we should go to the XMas display.
It was larger than expected and BEAUTIFUL!! We will probably go again!
It actually helps you get in the Christmas spirit!

Hidden running or mountain biking trails

By Brian W |

Designed by Olmsted, same architect of Central Park, Forest Park has a lot of things besides the more obvious open grounds and zoo. There is only the second eternal flame for JFK here. There is a great facility for parties. There are great hiking trails, especially south of Porter Lake. For me, someone who runs and mountain bikes, I like the trails. For those who prefer roads, there is a simple 4 mile loop that consists of all right turns starting from Converse Street and Park drive. You can add 1 mile and go off-road and into the woods too (my favorite). The cool thing here is that you get a good taste of wilderness and nature although you are surrounded by busy towns.

Lovely Park

By Redhatchris |

Very large park with lots to see. I loved the flowers and the ponds. A great place to walk, makes you forget you are in the city. Kids were fishing in one pond. I have been told that this park is highly decorated for Christmas. A great get away without having to go very far if you live in the city.

Wonderful Sunday morning walk...

By LSNS2652 |

My wife and I have been here many times, but it has been several years since our last visit.
It’s nice the see the park well maintained with nicely updated places like the Environmental Center at Porter Lake. My wife spent the night there, when it was a smaller log cabin, with Girl Scouts more than 50 years ago.
We had a pleasant walk with our daughter, with my wife sharing her remembrances.
Nothing better...

One of the most beautiful parks around.

By Katenagray |

Best place to jog or take a walk in Springfield. Grounds are well maintained. There are plenty of wooded trails for those who prefers a bit of rugged terrain.

A tradition every year even though the kids are grown

By Single Girl |

We started going when the kids were small and now they call and invite me! One year we stopped and took the horse drawn carriage ride, the kids saw Santa, we got hot chocolate. We look forward to it every year!

Best place to relax

By teeter2 |

I'm 63 and I have been going there since I was a child with my Grandmother . Never stopped going. But now with my Grandchildren wither to watch our kids play baseball, go to the zoo or at Christmas the light. They are always working on it and its a park for all seasons.

Family day

Beautiful place to spend the day with your family and have a picnic! Kids loved the zoo! As did us parents!

Start the holidays with Bright Nights!

By newjerseyfamily |

It was our first visit to Springfield and when I saw the reviews for Bright Nights, I felt that was the way to start this holiday. It does not disappoint! For $21 a car load, and having been well advised to get their early, we had a very enjoyable experience driving thru the park after dark. Well done!

Worth the trip!

By Dirk6460 |

What a great memory for our family! Although an hours drive from home it was worth the trip as we made a day of with the BB HOF visit and lunch and dinner in Springfield. I think the kids will really remember all the lights and the pictures with Santa in his shop..

A Popular Family Summer Spot

By DRLx2 |

Summer weekends are VERY busy with families, ball games, swimming, cookouts and children's birthday parties all around the picnic area's.

The snack bar is very popular and I like how the park is regularly maintained and is never full of trash left by inconsiderate park goers.

They have duck ponds that are a real favorite for people with small children, and an onsite zoo as well. But for me and my dog, our favorites are the trails throughout the woods.

I recommend an annual pass, which will pay for itself in just a couple visits.

Peaceful place for walks, picnics, the Forest Park Zoo and other attractions

Forest Park has a deep history in Springfield. The original acreage was donated by Everett Hosmer Barney, the inventor of the shoe skate. It now is considered one of the largest urban parks in the United States in the city's most populous neighborhood.

Memory Lane at Forest Park

By Susan S |

A Springfield native, I enjoy visiting Forest Park when I am in town. Featuring grand roadways, towering trees, wooded picnic areas and a zoo, Forest Park is central city oasis. Admittedly, the park exhibits some neglect - the duck pond, a childhood favorite, is dingy and overgrown. Even so, this a beautifully designed park offering a welcome respite as you tour the Springfield area.

Fabulous Holiday display

Picnic areas, ball fields, small zoo, ponds and lots of trails / roads to walk or bike. True oasis in the middle of the city. Great Farmers Market.

Bright Nights in Forest Park!

By Valerie KJ |

We had a wonderful time seeing the display of lights for Bright Nights! The children were so excited!

Bright Nights and Security Flashing Lights!!

By amberandy |

Took my son to Bright Nights recently. $21.00 and it wasn't worth it. I was passed by a vehicle because I thought I was driving too slow. He approached a security guard in another vehicle with yellow flashing lights. My guess was that something was wrong in the park. While continuing to listen to Christmas music while watching the displays, ANOTHER security vehicle drove toward us (in the wrong direction) with his "bright yellow flashing lights" and seemed to be in a rush! I grew up in Springfield and look forward to coming back to visit when I can but NOT LIKE THIS! Hats off to the police and security guards.....but it ruined our Christmas experience at Forest Park. I will be back at Forest park in the spring but NOT for Bright Nights again.

It’s a nice place to run with pleasant scenery and some hills.

Great holiday light show!

By Madhatter503 |

We tried the rest, this is still the best! We went the first year on Christmas eve when the kids were young. There was about 3" of snow on the ground and a light snow was falling. All I can say is that it was magical! We still go every year. Holiday music is transmitted via FM to your car, if you wish, however it will be drowned out by all the Ouuuuuh's and Ahhhhas!"

Perfect day!!

By Maymay68 |

We just spent a wonderful day in Foest park. It was a perfect place for both my 8 yr old and my 18 month old. The grounds are beautiful and very clean. The staff were Very friendly. Our main visit was for the zoo and we were not disappointed. The variety of anaimals is great. From miniature ponies to birds, monkeys, bears and reptiles. The zoo was kept extremely clean. No overwheling aroma to endure. No it is not as big as the Bronx zoo but it was just perfect when you are pushing around a stroller all day. Plus you will never have to fight your way through the crowd to get to see an animal. The other attraction was of course the pool/spray pad. After we enjoyed a hot dog & ice cream for less tan $5 bucks a person. Yes, thats right, it is not a typo. If we were at another zoo they would have robbed me for double that, I am sure.
We headed over to the pool. Unfortunately the pool itself is only for the locals. But no matter, we had a blast in the spray pad area. After that it was time to pack up our stuff and bring this perfect day to an end. But I am already planning to return before the end of summer! This place is a jewel and I am sure we will enjoy many more visits there.

Many interesting sights to see in this lovely urban park

By USAwalkers |

The park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted (who also designed Central Park in New York). What a beautiful treasure! We walked around and saw ponds, forests, sculptures, a wooden covered bridge, and a lovely rose garden. We did not go into the zoo. A mausoleum, adorned with pink marble columns, sits on a hill. Nicely maintained trails connect the various areas of the park. There is a nominal fee to park.

Magical place

By Julia R |

Is a beautiful park with ponds, picnic areas, a zoo bathrooms and a small food stand. Go for a walk, bike ride, roller blades...check out the rose garden in the Spring/Summer.

Great Park!

By Jamison Q |

Springfield has declined,..BUT the Park is definitely the Jewel in Pioneer Valley. Great place to relax or take a nice hike

Not Badd But Not What It Used to Be

By scarletman1972 |

Political correctness took away the Monkey House where I saw my first lion (and my first gorilla). It still is nice park. Many duck ponds and picnic areas. I don't know how safe it is. The park holds many memories for me. It is a beautiful park with some rough edges -- just like the rest of Springfield.

A Jewel from When They Knew the Value of a City Park!

By CCB2017 |

Frederick Law Olmsted, of Central Park fame, designed this historic park in the woods of Springfield Massachusetts, overlooking the Connecticut River. It is well-maintained and truly lovely to see families of all backgrounds walking onto the grounds for an afternoon of fun and cooler havens. Forest Park has it all: tennis courts (including several clay), splash sprinklers, in-ground pool, ice rink, grandstand baseball field, volleyball courts, shuffle board, bocci greens, several playgrounds, a zoo, duck ponds, creek, bike trails, hiking, historic houses, numerous picnic grounds, large green muti-use fields, snack bar, gazebos, picturesque wedding sites, a three-season farmers's market and the sweetest pine trees you would ever want to sit under! What a spot!

Feels like Christmas

By Angelina Assanti |

This is a family activity we do whenever we are in MA for the holidays. It's really fun and well done.

Great day trip. Remember to bring bread to feed the ducks!

By Marcial52 |

Easy to get to off I91. Lovely well groomed grounds for picnics. We start with a visit to the zoo, and then ride the zoo train. After that we have a picnic lunch, stroll the gardens and feed the ducks. We love the Lotus Blossoms when they are in bloom in July and August.

I expected more

By Brittany B |

But there were a TON of people in the park, most of which were acting obnoxiously. Very loud in most areas and I certainly wouldn't call it relaxing. I had high hopes after seeing so many positive reviews but was not pleased. There were people carrying around alcoholic beverages and people getting into fights in one of the driving lanes. I think that if it weren't for the poor crowd of people then it would have been a nice place.

one of my favorite spots in Springfield

By Martha M |

this is one of the havens in Springfield which can make you feel like you have escaped from the city. It is nice to walk through the park, see the leaves change in the fall, and see the ducks in the ponds. Spent many an afternoon in the park to relieve stress. A lot of walkers, bikers, other sports going on. A nice little concession stand for food. beautiful carriage house. Bright nights is coming up which is always breath taking. anyone looking for a place to see in springfield must come to see the lights and support a good cause

Winter Light Display

By ChicopeeJoe |

Forest Park has a great winter holiday light display but we enjoy the park during other seasons – tennis courts, baseball games, walking or just feeding the ducks.

Fall crisp day

Beautiful walk around the park. I stopped by for the Farmer's Market on Tuesdays. It was a nice place to walk around and take a small hike. Wish I had my dog with me.

Fascinating Dr. Seuss Christmas Celebration

By MARVJR |

Between Thanksgiving and January 1st is a great time to visit Forest Park. The Dr. Seuss Christmas Light Celebration is 3 miles of dazzling fun, music and entertainment for the whole family. Tune your radio to the channel for the music an enjoy a great evening.

Love the park

Recently moved to Springfield and live near park. Run and bike there all the time. Christmas lights are really cool too .

Forest Park & Zoo

By Dajan78 |

Awesome place to bring the family! We were visiting for the weekend and filled an entire day at the park! Excellent places to picnic, bbq, walk and play. The spray park was a great addition to a hot day for our 3 year old.

Not what it used to be......

By khdlr |

What I think they tried to do was get as many cars they could off the roads and into the park for traffic issues...and I get that. There were to many dead spots to keep the kids interested .. They made you go around this huge circle before you even got to see the Start of the lights.. I just don't remember it being like that.... our 7 year old fell asleep ...not sure we would spend the $21.00 to see the same set up of lights, it's the same year after year..If you have never been ..take the ride...:) get a discount at Big Y...we didn't plan on going so we paid full price...

Peaceful place

By Jose L |

Nice beautiful place well maintained!
The day the we went a monkey from the zoo escape, I'm not a fan of this little zoo but is fun for kids. Kangaroo, Camel, little pony, monkey...
Lake area there is some Ducks if you bring bread or cherrios you can feed them, most of the kids love to do it!! Nice place to family picnics!!

Bright Nights

By Larry O |

It was a wonderful experience for the family and I. Seemed like a million beutiful lights all over the park. Will be back next year again.

Very Festive & Pretty!!

By Sandy A |

I think this is a great one time a year drive through. It's very pretty and festive. It takes about 20-25 minutes to drive through. The only issue is that people drive through with their headlights on even though you are told not to. It makes it very hard for the oncoming drivers to see with the headlights in your eyes (there's a reason why you shut them off people). So just be considerate to others and shut off your headlights. But overall very pretty and they do offer hot chocolate and rides for the kids afterwards.

Awesome during the Christmas Season

By Jim G |

I grew up in the area but now live on the other side of earth. The park might perhaps be one of those gems that was right under my nose but because I was previously a local that grew up here I didn’t see it or appreciate it. I couldn’t say one way or another. However, during the Christmas season this place is awesome. I was here in December 2013 and it was my first time returning home in a few years. This was one of the many highlights of my trip.

The bright night’s exhibit is just awesome. The park is all lit up and you drive through their character displays many of which are animated via lights, and Christmas music is playing on the radio on the channel you are asked to tune to. There is also the option to go through it via hey ride, or a horse driven carriage at additional cost. There’s food concessions and a Santa Land too.

Here it is May and I’m already looking at the bright nights website weekly hoping the calendar will open. It is a long way to be in the US so when there I do some traveling too. But I want to make sure I’m in Western MA when Forrest Park has the Dinner with Dickens at the Barney Carriage House, or at the very least their supper with Santa which happen on property on certain nights which can be done along with Bright Nights.

Great park to spend the day in.

By Juan V |

One of the biggest parks in the nation with plenty to do. Park has multiple sport fields and playgrounds including an aquatic one. In the winter the park is decorate with lights for a yearly holiday show.

See the attraction by bicycle

By Bernie O |

The Meetup group that I occasionally bicycles with rides through the park before the cars arrive. However, they only do it on a Saturday or Sunday which means that the weather may not be favorable. Two of us decided to do it on a very mild day. Didn't get the opportunity to hear the music that goes with the attractions but we had a chance to take many pictures during our ride.

Beautiful Park and Zoo

By Mareh132014 |

We headed to the park for the Zoo. How impressed we were with the large well taken care of park we drove through before we reached the Zoo. Had we known we would have planned a picnic lunch. The Zoo was fantastic- friendly staff- wonderful variety of animals and demonstrations. A must see for both.

By DetailMom |

We enjoy Bright Nights at Forest Park every Christmas. Buy your Bright night tickets in advance at Big Y to save $ (or go on the first night Bright Nights opens - Wednesday before Thanksgiving for a $6 per car fee) this is a blessing to area families who otherwise would not be able to afford this annual display.
Fill your gas tank before getting in line. Bring your fun hats roll down the windows of your car, turn down your headlights, when you enter the park, turn up the heat and the radio, sing all those Christmas Carols while you enjoy the lights!

Many things to do

By GeorgeaSpringfield |

If you are planning a trip with the family this is the place. It has grills all over the park, public swimming pool in summer, baseball field all over, tennis courts, duck pond, play grounds, flower exhibits, animal farm, volley ball, basketball, a place to go bike riding and skating. Cost 3-5 dollars to get in per car.

Bright Nites at Forest Park

By Gerard G |

I live in Springfield and think the attraction is very beautiful. It has a little area where you can get hot chocolate and even visit with Santa Clause. You can put your radio on the music channel and
enjoy the lights. Only down fall is the price. I guess its a personal opinion if you want to pay the $21 per carload to view this attraction.

Amazzzing park!

By MAMama100 |

Lots of room to play ball. It has a small zoo that is open in the summer and is nice for young kids. There are also some play structures and an amazing rose garden(seasonal). A summer pool and sprinkles is also a big hit with the kids but it was very busy last summer every time we went.

By wineman99 |

Well worth the wait. We went on a very busy night. It's huge, keeps going on and on...Hint, we came from the highway. I'd drive past it and come from the other side like you live there... the wait is far less!

great park

By Kellypike |

i have been going for years .bright lights is the best time to go. please support our local park this is a great one!

Bright Nights is great for children

By everlastinggifts |

Living in Springfield is a bonus with Bright Nights. The kids love the displays and theres usually something new every year.

A secret Gem in the city.

By Tenbiking |

Forest Park is a wonderful serene get away if you like quiet, solitude, picnic in the woods and lake views. The lily ponds and Japanese gardens are beautiful when in bloom. If you are a family, the playscape, small zoo and train appeal to all ages. If you're looking for a game of tennis while you're on the road there are both clay and hard courts. All of this for less than $3 per car for entry. A gem, which competes with Central Park...in New York.

Farmers market plus more

This is a great family park. My family and I love visiting the farmers market every Tuesday. The park is clean. Their swimming pool is small, but wonderful.

Beautiful place to see Christmas lights! Our kids still love the blow up snow globe and it's become a holiday tradition for my family

Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted of NYC's Central Park fame - 735 acres of eclectic beauty

By JuJu1983 |

I had never been to Springfield's Forest Park and thus wasn't sure what to expect. This is what I found.

Firstly, Forest Park is vast -- 735 acres, (approximately the size of NYC's Central Park.) If you want to experience Forest Park's many different zones, I suggest that you drive in with your car.

The first zone -- if you enter via the architecturally gorgeous Sumner Avenue -- looks like a normal, if high-end city park. It features baseball diamonds, a hockey arena/ice skating rink, bocce courts, lawn bowling fields, tennis courts, and basketball courts. There's also a snack kiosk. When I was there, Forest Park was full of people playing various games and enjoying the day. Around all of these fields are various children's playgrounds and jungle gyms.

Within walking distance, slightly east, are a formal rose garden (absolutely gorgeous) and a sizable zoo. The zoo features tigers, leopards, and even an elephant -- despite its relatively small size, a highly impressive collection and definitely worth the price of admission (which is $5.)

Walking east, you pass a playground dedicated to Springfield native Dr. Seuss. Beyond that is a bluff overlooking a lake, featuring one of the most beautiful views I have ever seen in my life. Truly breath-taking. I saw people fishing by the lake (which was very large for a city park.)

After this I walked back to my car and drove through several attractions, each of which looked interesting; however, I'd spent over 2 hours just in the first quadrant of the park, so I had to skip places.

There's the aquatic park; several Victorian promenades and man-made lakes that have Omsted's fingerprints all over them, including gorgeous ponds, staircases, and bridges; the Prouty Grove (very peaceful, with places for cook-outs and campfires;) the Barney Carriage House, (Barney was a Springfield citizen who invented ice skates,) where many wedding receptions are held.

I stopped by the Barney house where there are many interesting sculptures, including several sphinxes, "the Three Virtues," and the Barney family mausoleum (very ornate.) From what I understand, Barney's mansion used to be part of Forest Park; however it was demolished during the 1950s to construct I-91, which cut off Springfield from the Connecticut River.

After this I drove again to the other end of the park, which features a baseball diamond with grandstands and Peter Toth's sculpture of a Native American head, built like a totem pole. It's a regional landmark.

Across the street, and only accessible by car is King Phillip's Stockade, the spot from which the Agawam Indians prepared to make war on Springfield in 1675. King Phillip (also known as Metacomet) nearly destroyed Springfield in the two year war. In the Stockade there's a sculpture of the Windsor Indian, who tried to warn Springfielders of impending danger.

This is one of the most interesting urban parks in America, in my opinion. It is truly multi-faceted and in each of its facets, successful... I forgot to mention, it features America's oldest public swimming pool (1899,) but thankfully it seems to have been updated since then. Absolutely loved Forest Park.

A Gem!

By karebear70 |

A lush oasis in the middle of the city. So many flowers, trees and foliage surrounding ponds filled with ducks, fish, frogs and salamanders. Paved walking trails and "off the beaten path trails"--bring a meal, find a place to rest and enjoy the beauty. Large grassy areas, picnic tables, grills, a snack shack, a zoo, pool, so much here!!

A three hour wait.

By bikerwarewolf |

Traveling through Bright Nights this year was an experience, even before we got to the park. We waited in line from the exit on 91 North for three hours! An hour of it we sat on the off ramp, where we were certain there was going to be an accident, with people all jumbled around and trying to fit two and three cars (or buses) wide up the ramp.
I went a couple years ago, and I didn't see anything that was really new this time around. I think I'm going to pass on Bright Nights next year. Maybe in a few years they will add some new lights and fix the traffic problems.

Crowded and huge

By Judith G |

This was a lovely park but we got lost walking. We took the meadowbrook loop which became confusing with extensions. Thanks to someone kind who was mowing a lawn we found our car again. The main part of the park was very crowded.

Must see for the holidays

By AdventureGirl007 |

The lights are great, just get there really early because the line of traffic can be ridiculous. We had no idea the first year we went & waited in the line of traffic at least 2 hours & we we're so sleepy by the time we got there it was hard to enjoy. Plan it well.

Beautiful Park

By Lorraine B |

This is a beautiful park! We were so impressed we have to go back even though it's 1.5 hours away. The lay out is wonderful, lots of private areas to picnic. Want to go back and walk the trails.

Precious resource

By Serephem |

Forest Park is well preserved and is welcoming to families. There are limited activities to do there but the space is great for dyi sctivities

Nice park

By Louis F |

Great park with a lot of cool places to check out and plenty of trails for all to enjoy. Ample parking available and multiple entrances to the park.

Fabulous

By Lex H |

You have to see this park. Something for everyone. Water park, baseball, basketball, zoo, duck pond and lots of history.

Hoiiday Tradition

By js2h |

This has become a tradition for the holiday season with the grandchildren. They love identifying the different ighting scenes. The displays are beautiful and the kids are excited with the visit since they know Christmas wil be coming soon.

Nice park with a zoo

By connecticutpoet43 |

This park is a good place to visit when you are looking to kick back and relax, but it can get crowded. They have a zoo, and in the winter around Christmas they have Bright Nights, a themed light show attraction. You pay by the car and drive through and they have a radio station play music for them. If you go for Bright Nights expect to be in line for a long time as it gets busy... sometimes backed up to the highway.

Relaxing day!

By Gilbert N |

Great park to spend a day relaxing. Beautiful park and has plenty of green areas to open a blanket, ride you bikes or toss a frisbee.

Forest Park Review

By Juan Carlos S |

Good park to take your kids. With the small zoo inside, it gives the park more life. It has a side for pool, basketball, baseball and even for pictures.

By Joseph E |

Hosts a variety of family-oriented events throughout the year. I especially enjoyed the car show last summer and the "Bright Nights" holiday lighting display at Christmas time. The grounds are also very well-maintained and clean.

Amazing light display!

By CEG310 |

i have been to this display the last 3 years and every time I go it is a different experience depending on the weather and how quickly or slowly we drive through. But one thing is constant - the Bright Nights display is extraordinary and totally worth the wait and the money. Highly recommend this for all ages!

Fun outdoor time for the whole family

By Nicole S |

Love going there for bright lights in winter. I just learned today that it is also a regular park (I did wonder what all those people were doing there in the spring/summer as I rode by).
From the outside it looks nice and relaxing. I have to find out if dogs are allowed so I could take them for a nice relaxing stroll - if not, oh well! I hear there are many beautiful birds, flowers, and decorations to be seen, I'm a sucker for those! Will update my review once I take a walk in there :)

Love forest park !

By Vjay S |

If you're in western mass, you must stop by Forest park. I mean if you're not from the area, you'll probably think there's nothing spectacular as such but this park is quite beautiful and i have fond memories of this park while living in Western Mass. Its esp more beautiful in the fall but is a great place to walk or run anytime of the year. They do have a christmas lights festival in the winter which is worth going once. Overall i'd recommend checking out forest park.

Convenient from Hartford, Cheap and full of fun

By return2asia |

The Zoo at Forest Park is a gem; small and manageable, and perfect for young kids (under 8). There is a snack bar outside the zoo gates, but we brought our own lunch and had a picnic. The park is lovely with lots of pretty gardens as well as lots of walking paths and nature trails. I wish I had known about this years ago!

Bright Nights

By rickb527 |

We went to see the Bright Nights display last night at Forest Park. We have not been in many years because our children have grown, but were looking for something different to do before going out to dinner. Purchased a discounted ticket at Big Y which saved us a few dollars. Not too much traffic on a Tuesday night, but a good steady flow. Lights are amazing. We had a great ride through the Park and my daughter took many photos and video with her phone. It was a wonderful experience that is not to be missed. Brought back a lot of memories.

Beautiful lights

By wendygD8226LC |

Stopped there at the recommendation of the clerk at our hotel. Park is decorated with lots of lights from Thanksgiving through early January. My family thoroughly enjoyed the drive through the park (even my 24 and 18 year old liked it). Be ready to wait in a long line for the cars to get to the entrance to the park. Search the park website for a $3 off coupon.

Beautiful light Average experience

By ZIMING Z |

We drove about 1 hour to there during Christmas season. In general the light is beautiful. It is a pretty large place and you can see many different styles. My kid likes this place. But the outdoor playground is dark, poor and too cold. The carousel horse has broken bulbs and mirrors and pretty cold without pad. Our experience is just average.

A nice place to visit especially at Christmas.Great light display.

By Tom L |

Park is well maintained and clean. Nice place to take a walk. They have an EXCELLENT light display at Christmas.

A nice afternoon.

By George |

Wether you are there for a kids baseball game, the zoo, walk the lawns , or sit by the babbling brook, you will drive away feeling good. There are picnic tables with fireplaces, splash pad for the kids. If you have a few hours to kill, this is the place to go.

Springfield Oasis

By Peter S |

My son and his family live across the street from Forest Park and each ttime me we visit we spend hours, walking, picnicking and sitting by the lake. There are always folks here who are walking dogs, strolling with babies, playing soccer and baseball and settling in for picnics at dozens of sites around this beautiful Frederick Olmstead designed Park. In just a few weeks is the opening and of Bright Lights, when the park is sparkling with thousands of holiday lights and displays.

Beautiful Christmas light display

By mark of the swan |

Try tripping these lights fantastic! One of the most awesome Christmas light displays I've ever seen. I'm talking several miles here! Beautiful, inspiring, mesmerizing labor of love. Starts out with a patriotic "God bless America" display. 40 foot high Nativity Scene. Huge Menorah. A great family tradition, Bright Nights at Forest Park.

Best park in Springfield but...

By coach-jef |

There are no more decent bathrooms thanks to the vandals. The park is nice but the people that visit there seem to not care about the park.

Bright Nites-Bright Holidays

By Neal F |

My wife read about this attraction on Yahoo, and asked if we could go. We visited Springfield years ago, but never knew about this attraction. Since it was only about a 2 hour drive, we decided to take a drive yesterday. We were not disappointed. The place was amazing despite the line to get in. The light displays were amazing, and we will be going every year from now on! One quick tip is to avoid Saturday nites, when the place is packed. It's better to go during the week, or on Sunday night like we did. It was well worth the drive.

Don't Miss the Farmer's Market

By Alan F |

The park is a wonderful asset for the city and surrounding towns. Walking trails, recreational possibilities, "Bright Nights" have been covered by other reviewers. One aspect that deserves wider acclaim is the Farmer's Market-which is now pretty much year round. During the warmer months it is outside every Tuesday. In the winter months it is twice a month on Saturdays indoors. Some exhibitors are at both, but there are some that participate in only one time period.

The presence of Berkshire Mountain Bakery is reason enough to go; but we try to support many of the local farmers. You will find everything from beautiful organic vegetables, exotic mushrooms, fine goat cheese, fish from the CT shore, organic meats and dairy, fine local honey and Mo's wonderful doughnuts. There is something very satisfying buying directly from the producer.

A MUST!!!

By kkcarter1 |

My family and I have been going to Bright Nights in Forest Park for years on years, it has become a family tradition now. Everyone gets into the car and head to Forest Park pay at the gate and let the show begin! There is a rest stop in the park to get hot cocoa and snacks also. A definite must for friends and family to get into the holiday spirit!

By Tino L |

This is a must do during the holidays if you love Xmas lights....the whole park is decorated in Christmas lights and you stay in the warmth of your car as you drive around 3 miles of lights!!!! A must do and highly recommended!!!! Can't wait till next year!!!

Peaceful Park in the center of Springfield

By Kaitlyn A |

Each time we go walking n Forest Park we are always reminded how beautiful it is. The park is HUGE- I probably haven't even explored half of it! We love to take the pups walking down near the fish ponds- it's so beautiful and well maintained. You totally forget you are in the city! Such a gorgeous, safe park!

Not To Be Missed!

By momwinslow |

This is well worth the admission price. Both young and old will love it. All the strings have been pulled out for this display. Dr. Seuss, and other story book characters as well as traditional Christmas.

Many unleashed dogs that staff does nothing about

By RuthK713 |

Now it costs a fee to enter this park. Maintenance lacking in many areas - saw trash, broken glass etc. It once was wonderful and now is very disappointing. Many unleashed dogs that staff does nothing about.

Great park with lots to do!

By elena111633 |

We have been coming to Forest Park for over 30 years! It's beautiful, with gorgeous flowers, ponds, a zoo, huge fields to play on, and lots of sites for grilling. Good place for family picnics and parties. Nice photo opportunities throughout the park. Great place to walk the dog. We like to feed the ducks and run up the steps of the old amphitheater. There is a pool, a skating rink, food, etc. In the winter, the park is decorated for Bright Nights, which attracts tourists from all over New England!

Bright Nights in Forest Park .. Great ... But ...

By mersee |

Great .. once you got in. You drive through the gates and pay & they give you a radio station to tune in to for Christmas music. Drive slow ... take some pics .. enjoy.

But .... beware ... It was a long ... very long .. wait in line (line of cars) if you go early. I went around 6:30 on a Sat. ... probably not the best idea. I have to say ... everyone waiting was very polite and patient. There is 4 lines of traffic merging into the park. Once inside it turns into one to drive thru the park. We waited 2 hrs in most cases not moving - and some people got out of their cars and ... well pee'd where ever they could pee. Show up later .. closer to closing .. and I bet the line was shorter.

Beautiful park

By AlaskanVagabond |

We spent a few hours walking around this gorgeous, relaxing park. It had forests, ponds, gardens, a zoo, sports fields, a mausoleum, and more. The variety was just wonderful. I wish we had brought a picnic lunch with us.

Forest Park zoo on the go a waste of money

By dhousey |

On Sunday, May 15, 2011 I had a party for my son’s 7th birthday at my home with the zoo on the go program. Unfortunately, the presentation was not as advertised and I am disappointed with the overall quality of the program.

Several months prior to the party date, I looked into the zoo on the go program because my son wanted an animal themed birthday party. The Flyer clearly states that for $200 I would receive an “hour long educational presentation that uses 7 live animals and artifacts”. The presentation at my house from Forest Park was 35 minutes long (from 1:00 pm to 1:35pm) and only included 6 animals. The hostesses were neither engaging with the children nor very knowledge about the animals. The list of animals included in the advertisement is impressive yet the animals that came to my house disappointed the audience.

My son was disappointed with his birthday party and unfortunately I cannot explain to him why we did not get what we paid for. Two-hundred dollars is a lot of money to spend for 35 minutes of entertainment.

Christmas Wonder

By X8184GBcharlesc |

Christmas in Forest Park is a fantasy and Holiday delight, enjoying all of our childhood dreams and the family really enjoy the lights and the holiday music.

Great find

By Stradinger |

Who doesn't love a farmer's market! And the one at Forest Park in Springfield is a wonderful find.

I found goat cheese at Sweet Pea Cheese, homemade kombucha at Lifebooch Kombucha, my most favorite bread in the world at Berkshire Mountain Bakery (which means I save on shipping since I've been buying this bread for three years and mail ordering, and several wonderful produce stands for vine-ripened tomatoes and greens. The duck eggs at Pitchfork Farms was sold out of these rare find eggs, so will catch them earlier next week.

I am so thrilled to find you all.

It's obviously beautiful in December but try visiting in the spring!

By Miss2saint |

I've only ever gone during Christmas because it is a famous attraction but the park is just as beautiful in the spring if not more beautiful!

The zoo at Forest Park is a perfect 1/2 day get-away for a young child. The entry price is $4.50 for adults and even less for children. The zoo area is rather small, but there are numerous animal exhibits - several with monkeys and big cats and many with farm animals. The gift shop sells "crackers" to feed the animals. The zoo is perfect for young children, but might not hold much interest for older children. There is a 25 minute train ride (for $2.50) that leaves from the zoo area. The train travels the entire perimeter of Forest Park and gives a very good view of all the wonderful facilities the park has to offer. Immediately outside of the zoo area is a huge playscape, which is a great way to expel any excess energy before going home. I have gone to Forest Park zoo several times this summer and plan to go back many more! In addition to the zoo, there are numerous athletic fields and picnic areas, which all appear in pristine shape. Pack a picnic lunch and make a day of it - a beautiful asset to Springfield!

Fun Xmas time event to get you into the spirit!

Great place for families any time of the year. Went to a wedding here, food, staff and surrounding were beautiful. At Xmas time the park is lit up and called Bright Nights. It is your typical venue for a drive by Xmas light exhibit but fun and set to music cost runs 15 dollars per car and discount tickets are available though AAA and internet.

A day in the park for family that enjoys being active - walking, hiking, frizbee, baseball etc. Park zoo is superior, but...has a cost. Consult libraries for free passes

Always great

Bright Nights is always a beautiful experience for young and old. I've gone just about every year for the past 20; first with my kids, but also with friends. A truly awesome experience-a Springfield gem.

Bright Nights, 2014

Bright Nights was fabulous, but the traffic was a nightmare! We took I-91, got off the exit, and the park is about a mile and a half off the exit. It took us over 2.5 hours to drive that mile and a half! We planned our trip specifically to go to Bright Nights so we waited, and we had a free pass. We got off the highway at 6:50pm, I thought we were early, but we weren't.

The lights themselves were pretty amazing. We've never gone, so for us it was great! About halfway through the park there is a refreshment area with snacks, bathrooms and Santa, who might very well have been the real Santa! He was great!

I recommend Bright Nights, but you either need to be there right when they open at 5pm, or go during the week! Not sure it's worth a 2.5 hour traffic jam, however!

My friends and I went to visit this zoo several years ago and the horrible condition the animals were kept in has stuck with me to this day. The cages/areas the animals were kept in were incrediably tiny. I have a vived memory of the Black Bear "exhibit": it held 2 large bear in a cage that was maybe 12 X 12ft with a concret floor and about 7-8 ft high, it broke my heart.
There was 1 lonely coyote in maybe a 16 X 16ft cage with over grown grass and a sad little shack for shelter. There was also a large group of about 12 deer in a 20 X 20 ft cage. Like I said it has been several years since this visit so I hope things have changed. But to this day, this zoo has always stuck with me as being one of the saddest experiences of my life.

Wonderful, slow ride through some truly beautiful Christmas Light configurations! Loved the entry point poinsettias, the Nativity, the blue and white carousel, the shining lights on the pond, the jumping/frog, and the jumping-over-the-car reindeer!!

A very cheery, inexpensive way to enjoy the Christmas Season!! (Make sure you get your discount ticket at Big Y!) The kids will love Horton, the Grinch, and Dinosaur Volcano, and Toyland!!

I loved the dark background, instead of a frenzy of lights. Very lovely. Thank you!

Hidden Gem of Springfield

Very pretty and versatile park. A zoo, Dr. Seuss sculptures, garden, sports, fields, many ponds, and several picturesque trails to explore.
