Cool vista

By Basledder |

It’s a cool spot to take a picture. We drove by the first day there we about 30 people there trying to take pictures (4:30 Friday). We went to monument on the Saturday around 8 am and there was no one at the spot so we’re able to take a few pics.

Mission Complete

By Teena S |

One of the reasons we took our vacation here. We were fortunate in that we stayed up the road in Mexican Hat. We drove through on our way to Mexican Hat and was wondering shy people were standing alongside the road as we passed them by. After turning around and looking out our back window there it was, that awesome iconic view. We went back 2 days to see Monument Valley, and then when back to pick up an item I couldn't live without at Gouldings. The best time of day to get a picture is defintely in the late afternoon as the Sun is going down. But, then you have to make sure it's not very cloudy either or it will be hazy. Loved this place! I could sit alongside the road and look out ahead all day long.

What a view

By Norbert T |

When driving from Monument Valley in direction to Mexican Hat this is a must view. Fortunately parking areas have been installed so that you don't have to worry leaving your car. To take photographs you have to be very careful if you take them from the middle of the road!

Forrest Gump

By Franklin W |

ok, it was good to place yourself in the Forrest Gump scene. not a lot you can say about s scenic pull over

Drive through to say you've been there, try not to run over the tourists

By MizMunce |

Yeah, it's that iconic spot where Forrest turns around. It's also an actual highway, folks. We could not believe the people who stopped traffic to get their selfies, and looked completely put out with us for expecting to actually drive down the road. Sheesh. We were just trying to get to our next destination!

Gump Fans

By Lisa Meow |

Fun photo op and just amazing scenery. If your a fan of the iconic movie, don't miss it! I stayed a night near the entrance to Monument Valley so before we headed into the park we decided to check this off our list first. I had read somewhere that the best place for the photo was on Highway 163 at milepost 13, If you are coming from Monument Valley, just be sure to turn around somewhere at that point, don't do like I did ..LOL...I kept driving until I got to Mexican Hat, trying to figure out how the heck I missed a major piece of landscape!. Be sure to wear your BubbaGump hat!

Iconic view ... don't miss!

By 675randalle |

Made famous in the movie Forrest Gump, this is the spot where Forrest finally got tired of running. With the two-lane road leading straight towards the red sandstone rock outcroppings of Monument Valley, don't miss stopping by. Highway 163, about mile marker 13 ... between the town of Mexican Hat & Monument Valley. Just be careful as the cars that AREN'T stopping for a picture whiz by pretty quickly!!

Souvenir from the film

By Steve Lewis |

I remembered that moment in the Foret Gump film. It is funny to see the same view.

You will find many spots to capture this invité road leading to monument valley

Great photo opportunity! :)

By Ivana Z |

Great views of the monuments and the road leading to them, awesome place to take photos! :) You can’t miss it, all the cars and tourists are parked there taking photos. We found another great photo taking location on the same road but on the opposite side of the monuments where there’s significantly less traffic.

Forrest Gump Fans

By Mark |

If you are Forrest Gump movie buff, this place is for you. The historic monument valley is amazing for non-Gump fans too. You'll end up driving through this area if you are going from Moab to the Grand Canyon. Really great views and picture opportunities. The free range horses are pleasing to watch while driving through the area.

Great photo!

By Janelle V |

We drove through monument valley to get to the turnouts where everyone was pulling over to take photos.
From that direction we pulled into the first one on the right but if you want to see the sign that says Forrest Gump then you need to go into the one on the left which is a bit further down.
Luckily the road was quiet so we could stand in the middle and take a photo with monument valley in the background.
Even if you don't care about the film, it's a good view and photo without having to pay $20 at the visitor centre (which we also did)

Runner bucket list item

By Running Man |

If you are a runner, this is a great bucket list item, if not a runner, great for movie watchers. Traffic is a little congested due the popularity of this iconic spot.

Photo op.

By emptyNest59 |

Looks just like the picture, and you can do it even when the Tribal Park is closed. I went evening and morning and got great pix both times. This is just a spot in the road, not marked, except for the speed limit drops, so don't expect to see signs marking it.

By the way, the picture you see in this experience will be BEHIND you.

Great View To See

By FifiBojangles |

A long way from most places but it's worth it to see if in the area. This view is much better in the morning as the sun is coming up, it shows all the reds in the rocks.

a must!

By sc40sumthin |

definitely a must - a popular stop along the way for a spectacular view. The vehicles do not slow down for all the tourists trying to get photos so be careful out there!

One lonely road

By Lindaliz |

If you are traveling to the national parks in Utah, you should drive through Mexican Hat. Because our trip was during Covid, we couldn't drive through the Valley of the Gods which is on a reservation, but you can pretty much see everything from highway 163. It was very dry and dusty when we when through this area, so at times it wasn't super clear on our pictures, but really worth seeing.

Be a Forrest Gumper!

By Thomas K |

A stop at Forrest Gump Point is a chance to reminisce with our all American folk hero, Forrest Gump. An incredible stretch of highway, magnificent cliffs on the skyline and a historic site where you feel you can mingle with Forrest as he ended his cross country run at this very spot. The countryside remains as dramatic as ever. Definately a worthwhile stop if you are a GUMPER. A new sign replaces the tattered original to the west of the highway. Definately a safer photo op there than in the middle of the road. Happy travels.

Silly, but interesting and fun. Also FREE! But watch for traffic.

By Gary S |

Had Mon Valley as a bucket list item (and it was worth it) but then found out about the scene in FG movie where he stops running. Made it a point to find location, and it's easy - it's the only road from the north. Surprised to see about 20 cars with folks awaiting their turn an a fortunately not busy road. So - different, silly, but fun

Fun little stop

By compton49er |

A fun stop, if you're into hitting movie sites. There's a sign, so you can't miss it. There were several other people there when I stopped so we had plenty of eyes watching the road. If you're standing in the road to take a picture, you need someone watching your back.

Beautiful View of Monument Valley

By Tita T |

We had stopped at a Navajo Jewelry shop on the side of the road to take pictures of Monument Valley in the distance. Purchased a necklace and fried bread which was delicious. There were tourist all over the main road taking pictures with oncoming traffic. I thought they were crazy. Asked where the Forrest Gump sign was and we had already passed it. So we went back to get pictures. It was setting so far off the road that we had missed it. It really needs to be closer to the road.

The Best

By Mikez428 |

Maybe it’s the little things but this was so cool. The view in itself is awesome but to take your pic out in the middle of the road (carefully) where Forrest ended his journey.

You can see why he stopped here

By Greg J |

Tried stopping here a couple days earlier and entire area was covered in dust from high winds. Return trip was clear and perfect. During summer, this is probably much more challenging to park and get photo safely. There are a lot of parking pulloff locations. After seeing this, we had to watch the movie again this past weekend. Iconic scenery.

YES!!!

By Lauren R |

If you are anything like me, Forrest Gump is one of your favorite movies!! To actually see this spot in real life was awesome!! Don't worry, you won't be the only person stopping to take a photograph! We stopped at the 2nd pull off, there are a total of 3 that will work well, the 2nd one got the best background in my husband's opinion. Worked for me, everyone who has seen the photo knew exactly why I stopped!

Fun to pose!

By WImom |

It was fun to pose in the middle of the road at the point that Forrest Gump stopped running in the movie. But beware, as the speed is 65-70 miles per hour on a two-lane highway. It can be best located driving south on Hwy. 163 on the left side in front of mile marker 13. There are two Navajo stands located nearby-one is on the right and one is on the left. I had seen in photos whether there was a small sign signifying that it was the spot that Forrest Gump stopped but it was down on the day that we were there.

Iconic site

By Igorek007 |

This is an iconic site that was seen by everyone on pictures or in movies. We took tens of pictures. People jump, sit, dance on the road, but everyone gets their great picture.

Why not?

By Sharon K |

This is a beautiful view when in the area. I don't think I would go out of the way to see this because there and many beautiful views here. However, since we were in Monument Valley, how could you not do it?

Monument valley

By imagemaker747 |

Hot and smoky from all the fires. Never go here in the summer. October /November , plus to many people.

Quirky place

By Peter B |

One of those places that you just park up, take a picture and that's it, but be careful it can be a busy road, there are good views too of Monument Valley to enjoy

"Run Forrest!"

By Matteo C |

Discovered this place by chance, thanks to the road sign. It was very fascinating and special to photograph the same camera point of view of such a beautiful film!

Do it!!!

By Joannemch |

Short drive from The View or Gouldings Lodge, beautiful country! Give yourself two hours, after your photo op at FG Point continue driving past Mexican Hat....the Hat Rock formation are worth the extra miles. We did this before our afternoon tour of Momument Valley.

Forest Gump run here!

By Tamara Jovanovic |

It can be crowded, but it is a nice view. It’s very picturesque, the nature is awesome and it’s enough to only sit here and enjoy the view ☺️

Scratch this off the bucket list

By John S |

Being a fan of the movie and Tom Hanks, visiting this site was put on my bucket list several years ago and planned into our itinerary of our current cross country trip.

Since we were traveling northbound, we had to watch in the rear view mirror to see the iconic buttes and spires to know when to stop. Actually, it wasn't difficult to tell when we were there because of all the people in the middle of the road trying to take selfies and the cars parked on the side. I stopped at a pullover a tenth of a mile before the top of the hill to get my photos so there would be no other people in the shots.

I find it amazing how a movie can make such an iconic stopping place out of one of many beautiful landscapes of the Monument Valley.

Fun stop for a quick pick

By Rain B |

Nice view. The spot marked is too Far East. Movie shot is further west toward the valley. Morning sunlight was good

Iconic

By Bud E |

Beautiful spot - iconic spot. We found the sign marking the spot but most people were stopped about 50 yards further down so we join them to improve the photos.

Instagram Worthy!

By Timothy Y |

Be patient while certain people take a long time like they're doing a full photo shoot there. It's super beautiful though. It took us about 10 minutes to wait for enough people to get out of the way and for the cars to not drive up on us.

We happy to see the Road Sign: Forrest Gump Hill.

By LightPacker308286 |

In a misty morning, we drove along the highway 163 to Forrest Gump Point. We happy to see the Road Sign: Forrest Gump Hill, Scenic View Area Next 1 Mile.

Over rated

By Andy L |

The location is overrated and other “Scenic Turnouts” closet to Monument Valley are more photogenic. Too many people pull off this location. Now, I can say, been there, done that.

Everyone Needs Their Photo Here!

By BrendaNaples |

This is so cool to see after seeing the movie!
There are pull offs on both sides on the highway and there were multiple folks pulled off and taking photos. Lots of folks go in the middle of the highway to recreate the Forrest run. Traffic is fast, so be careful.
The view is stunningly beautiful - this is a not to miss!!

Neat

By CalamityAz |

We decided to check out Mexican Hat after visiting Monument Valley. So of course you have to stop and get a pic from here.

Majestic View

By Karen Canterbury |

The view here and place Forrest Gump has in cinematic history makes this a popular stopping point. There is a lower speed limit, and a lot of selfie takers darting into the road.
Be aware!

An amazing place to visit and view

By gibosity |

Well worth the drive. About 10-15 minutes from Monument Valley itself. Best to go in the morning so the sunlight shines onto the buttes in the background.

We went in winter, when it was pretty cold. Was the perfect time to go - nobody was there!

C8 Corvette round trip!

By david t |

Drove to Forrest Gump point and it wasn't that busy. People all took turns taking pictures . People even offered to take pictures for you.

The Promise vs Reality

By Michael S |

Regrettably, the photos of this iconic scene are always edited to remove the numerous road signs that clutter both sides of the highway and spoil the view.

Nice view, dirty surroundings

By HatRez |

The view is beautiful and a popular stop on the way from Blanding to Page. But as soon as you enter Navajo land, the ground is littered with beer cans and trash on both sides of the highway... like a sea of garbage. We didn't experience this on any of our other extensive travels throughout Utah. It was disappointing and detracted from the experience. Every three minutes is a stand selling crafts and jewelry but it was very hard to want to support people who don't care for their gorgeous surroundings.

OVER LOOKING THE HIGHWAY TO MONUMENT VALLEY

By 707clayg |

There are several good places to pull over and look down the road to Monument Valley. A nice photo stops.

Go in the morning to get best color of the monuments

By jaycee98 |

We stopped at Mile Marker 13 along with a lot of other Forrest Gump groupies. It was fun to be right where the movie was filmed. We went in the afternoon and the lighting was not good for photos; recommend going in the morning. Watch out for traffic as the cars don't slow down. I understand that it is a road; but it is also a main tourist attraction so people need to watch out for each other.

Perfect shot of Monument Valley

By dinosaursrawk |

There are several pull offs to get the perfect Monument Valley shot on the road. We drove from east to west. When we stopped, we did not see a sign specifically designating it as Forrest Gump Point, but you know it when you see it. The road was not very busy when we were there around 5pm so we were able to get the road picture and take our time.

A part of movie history

By Phil A |

Having left Monument Valley, we turned right onto route 163 and proceeded north west for about 15 miles. The precise location was proving a little difficult to find as we thought we had gone far enough, but as we continued up the road we came across other ‘gumpies’ standing in the middle of the road posing for photos. The GPS location is at 37.101409,-109.990869, and this is the point where Forrest Gump stopped running. There isn’t much more to say about this place other than enjoy the views, pose for your photos, and most importantly … watch out for approaching cars !!!

motorcycle tour

By Phillip H |

Visited this on motorcycle tour of west coast of USA back in 2015, scenery around here is stunning and would recommend a tour of this area

It's exactly what you think it is

By Michelle L |

I mean it's a fun photo op but in reality it's 30 people jumping onto and off an active (and I mean active) highway in the middle of no where. It was a lot busier than I would have thought (with a lot of international visitors which kinda surprised me). There are a couple pull off spots where you can park but you need to be quick getting your picture and probably just accept that there will be other people in picture.

Iconic Sight

By DLP |

If you have seen the Movie Forest Gump, you will recognize the sight right away. It is unmistakable, but more gorgeous in person. Be careful as this is a main road with a steady flow of traffic.

I'll be back for such pics

By BrakiWorldTraveler |

Unfortunately, my pics don't look like the headlining one up and like many other travelers'.
We were 2 days in MV - day 1 was cloudy but OK and we did the loop then and left this for day 2. The second day was a disaster - low clouds, fog, mist, snow...you name it, it was there.

Great Photo Op & People-watching Spot

By K Klasna |

Great place for a photo op, even better place to watch "influencers" and others do ridiculous things in the middle of the road. Highly recommend bringing snacks and watching the entertainment.

Yes we took the iconic picture

By Betsy E |

There's a lot of turn offs on this road to get the iconic Monument Valley picture. Watch out for people as you're driving!

Wanted to get my own screen saver photo

By RockyTops |

Got there mid day in late Nov 2019 and the place was packed with tourist like me. Never could get a photo without other people posing or vehicles in the shot.
Will have to try again in Nov of 2020 on our next snowbird trip.

Fun Time Recreating the Movie Scene

By Julesfromlc |

When planning our trip to Monument Valley, our family decided to have some fun, so we ordered some clothing similar to what Forrest Gump wore at Forrest Gump Point. We also ordered a wig with a beard. It was lots of fun and made for great pictures.

Photo Op!

By John B |

Had to stop here for the quintessential Monument Valley photo post Forrest Gump.
Turnoffs on both sides of highway.
People stand in the middle of the street to take photos.
Drive carefully!!!

It is beautiful.

Without the movie it is still a great place for photos

By AussiePD |

Before we went to Monument valley I had looked this up on the internet and Google Maps so knew exactly where to 'slow down' and look for the sign.
What I wasn't overly prepared for was the number of cars and people standing in or sitting in the road taking 'selfies' and pictures of others.
Given that cars are coming through at 65 its like a game of chicken.
We went through this point early morning going north and there were cars and people stopped at 3 different spots.
When we came back through just before sunset, same deal - at least 4 lots of people taking photos.
Even without the Forrest Gump link this is a logically great place to take photos.

While in the area- you Must stop here

By Kristie P |

This is a quick stop while visiting Monument Valley. The site is marked and you just wait your turn to take the perfect picture.

Iconic photo op in travelling South

By BlueKarAdventures |

Pretty. Iconic. No real place to pull over safely. Get out, snap a photo or two and get back on your way. Best

Couldn't drive by...

By Beth H |

We had to stop. We are all Forrest Gump fans and I am so glad we came this way. Our kids were so excited when we came over the small hill. The view is even more beautiful in person. Take the time to stop and take a picture because it only takes a few minutes out of your day.

Get there early!!

By wanderer |

We did this twice....

Once in the evening and once early morning.

If you are traveling early evening watch for humans in the road. I would recommend getting there in time for sunrise, we did this and no one was around - it was so beautiful and serene

Beautiful part of America

Beautiful!

By Nursegal53 |

This is a must see in Utah. Viewed this in the morning and there were several people who had set up cameras on tripods to photograph the vista during the sunrise. Best view of Monument Valley.

Better view from mile 10

By epicsaga |

You'll see it better from mile 10-12. At the official spot are other people and the rock cliffs are very far away. Make sure to have someone looking at traffic so you don't get run down. Monument valley is much more dramatic

Fun trivial place!

By Michael D |

Came across this by chance & realized what it was when I looked in my rearview mirror! Several other travelers were taking some pictures which brought it to my attention. If you are a movie fan, Forrest Gump in particular, pretty cool to see. Plus great scenery on this whole drive!

A Nice Drive through Monument Valley with a View

By James C |

I departed Mexican Hat, UT via the Forrest Gump Highway through Monument Valley to Goulding’s Lodge. A great drive with a view. Had a pull out to take a few pictures.

What a Surprise Find! Thanks to all those to posted this location in the past!

By patrickmH3714PS |

What a surprise find! Plus a beautiful drive on the way there! Note there are plenty of "turn outs" to get off the highway to take pictures.

Same as the million photos you have seen

By Scott G |

Not really worth the stop, a wood sign showing where a fictional character in a movie stopped running. Sure the movie was very good, but this is a blehhh stop.

Don't kill anyone!

By JoolsReading |

Great views but if I wasn't watching the road I think I'd have run down someone standing in the middle of the road getting that perfect picture.

You just have to get a pic

By Hotpottin |

Iconic spot for a pic that all will recognize. Plenty of spots to pull off. Traffic is light so enjoy your time and take that pic. During summer there are a lot of Europeans traveling the Valley. We help a few take some interesting group pics. Apparently the thing to do is dance or jump in the pics on that spot.

So get after it. Do a jig and make a memory.

Nice view but WTF are some people thinking?

By Barrhaven1 |

Nice pop culture moment and view here. But we saw a couple with a baby standing in the middle of the busy highway to get a photo, with a semi trailer coming down the hill at them. Darwinism at it's best (or worst).

Top location!

By Luisa F |

beautiful place, unique and lovely. recommended a visit to this road that leads to 'entrance to the park of Monument Valley.
It is also possible to take a photograph along the road, but paying attention to the cars that reach from both sides

Fun!

By Joann G |

This was fun, but watch for people in the roadway, seriously. We went in the late morning and the lighting was great.

Fun stop

By Betty |

This was a nice 10 minute fun stop made famous in the Forest Gump movie. Lots of cars pull over to the side here. This is an active road but there are signs telling motorists to slow down. People can check when there are no cars coming, and then take pictures in the middle of the road. Most cars do slow down; however, one car totally was going over the speed limit when we were standing off to the side of the road. Always be careful and you can see when traffic is coming and get off the road. The scenery is beautiful so we can see why they used this road for filming.

Famous landmark

By Prayanak |

We stopped while driving from Mexican Hat on our way to Monument Valley. This is the very famous view that in a sunny day looks impressive as actually the rest of the road going to the entrance of Monument Valley. There is a few places to park aside on the road so plenty of option to get a good photo.

Iconic View

By ohtheplacesyoullgo5 |

One our way to Page, AZ and coming back into to explore Monument Valley we just had to stop at this one-of-a-kind iconic spot to admire and take pictures. There is something about this vista that just puts a smile on your face and have a chance to experience it really made me happy. This spot can get quite touristy because of it's popularity so be prepared for there to be small groups of people. There are places to pull over and park your car. It is very typical to take a picture on the road, just be mindful of traffic (not ever driver is nice). You can also see the Forrest Gump sign which is where he stopped his journey.

So cool

By mth6530 |

Monument Valley was very interesting. Many movies and TV commercials have been filmed here. Suggest paying for the tour to the back areas.

run Forrest run

By Hadley96 |

It still looks exactly like the movie shot. Free off street parking. You can buy some jewelry on the side of the road. People wait in line to take their picture in the middle of the road.

Amazing site and views

By pookybun p |

Well of course when one travels up US163 you just have to stop to take a Forrest Gump re-enactment photo. It is not hard to find as lots of people stop to take similar photos. But really just looking at the view is just amazing, it really would be hard not to like and appreciate the beauty of it all.

Forest Gump Hill

By Tammy G |

Absolutely beautiful. A bucket list trip. If your coming from Utah headed south on 163 there are 3 pull off spots. Definitely do not do the first one! We had a truck come flying by even though there’s signs 45 mph and signs about pedestrians. We went to second pull off spot, then decided to go to the last one because no one was there and it was perfect!

Because I was a runnning!

By Eric N |

Great spot to take a photo op! Be careful as knuckleheads stopping in the middle of the road. There are a few great pullouts.

Bucket list moment

By Paul R |

As soon as I drove up to the top of the hill, i turned to my Girlfriend and said this is it. This is the scene frI’m the Forrest Gump movie where he was jogging and stopped and turned around cause he was tired. Such a surreal view as you stand in the middle of the road staring down the highway at Monument Valley. So glad I decided to go down here for 2 days from Moab, Utah. Gotta go here

beautiful

By Voyage114317 |

Great location for pictures. Awesome view! drive was pretty as well. Must see if visiting monument valley.

Road trip

By Mellyjane |

We travelled to monument valley and on to Mexican Hat, via Forest Gump point. Long straight road, beautiful sun shine, very little traffic... perfect

Monument Valley

By leafee |

Didn't realize this view had a name, but have seen it many times in photos for trip to Monument Valley. People were stopped along this route, getting out of their cars and sitting in the road on the dotted line taking photos. Craziness!

A must-see!

By Katie B |

This place was impressive! After seeing it in films and photos, it was incredible to actually be there in person.
It is located roughly halfway between Monument Valley and Mexican Hat - where we stayed due to hotels in MV being expensive - and takes about 10-15 minutes to get to from Monument Valley.
We got there at about 9am and there was nobody for a while, until one guy - named Forest, yes, Forest - pulled up and we took each other's photos. We went again in the afternoon on our way back to Mexican Hat and it was a little busier, but it is helpful to have people around to take your photo anyway!
There is plenty of room on either side of the road to pull over. Definitely do pull over and take it in; it's so beautiful to see!

Great View Point Near Monument Valley

By Dean B |

Anyone who has seen the movie will remember this view. Monument Valley itself is amazing and this does not disappoint as you can stand in the same spot and take a picture. The sign that many mentioned on line for the point is no longer there. So, look for the turn off on the north bound side.

Spectacular views towards Monument Valley

By Whoami91 |

Stopped here to take a picture at the iconic "Forrest Gump" movie location. You need to be careful as this is a two-lane highway and there might be a lot of traffic during the Summer months. However, we went in late September and we pretty much had the road to ourself. If you go to Monument Valley, you must stop here. The views are phenomenal. The colors of the rocks with the contrast of the sky and the road...just beathtaking. This location is about 20 minutes North of Monument Valley on Hwy 163; I believe it's about MM 13. Trust me, you will be glad you stopped by.

Forest Gump

By Petr Č |

The place is well marked, but there are still a lot of people moving there. It is practically impossible to take a photo. Better photos are taken in the morning. In the afternoon it is against the sun.

Great stop

By Discover637882 |

We drove from Kayenta to Mesa Verde. The scenery was breathtaking and this stop was cute. There is people standing in the middle of the road so be careful! It is a great photo spot!

Breathtaking view

By Jazz Gumbo |

Difficult to capture the view you wish to because many people are also stopped and the clear view you wish for is near on impossible or you are very lucky. A fantastic view though of a magical place.

Treat your inner Gump

By KenProspero |

Not a great deal to say about this. Forrest Gump Point is close to Monument Valley (which is a NOT TO MISS attraction). It's free. But, pleas be careful, so you don't get hit by a car while standing in the middle of he road. (better advice is just don't stand in the middle of the road).

Fun and Scenic Photo Op for Movie Lovers

By CrankingChick |

This is a viewpoint in Monument Valley along US163, the iconic location where cinematic hero Forrest Gump ceased his 3-year cross-country run with the words, "I'm pretty tired... I think I'll go home now". It's located about 8 miles south of the town of Mexican Hat, at mile marker 13. There aren't any official signs or markers, but there are some places you can pull off to park on the shoulder. When we drove through there were people standing in the middle of the roadway, so be cautious as you approach. Native Americans are sometimes selling handcrafts in shelters along the roadside.

A bit of a movie buff spot

By 77smiley |

Not a long stop unless you brave the road and re-enact the movie moment. There is a sign with his wig . Great photo op

very cool place

By blueman66 |

this is a must see, the view is very cool, has a great place to park, there was a lot of places to pull over to see the back ground mountains

Fun extra stop!

By Cat |

Stumbled upon this by accident (we were heading north towards Moab), as the view was behind us after we came through monument valley. A fun little stop if you’ve seen the movie - careful, the road is busy!!

Amazing view

By Jenny M |

Came up here at 5.45pm this week, there was a dark cloud in the sky so we came back at 10am the next day and got a great clear blue sky picture of the backdrop, it's a pretty impressive view. There was only 1 or 2 other cars at the time there so it was great to have the place almost to ourselves. It is a busy stretch of road and cars drive fast (65 speed limit) so you need to have someone watch for cars if you're taking pictures in the middle of the road. Stay safe and enjoy!

Fantastic view

By Michael C |

There are several paved pullouts off the highway so it is very easy to stop and take photographs. The view, when approaching from Mexican Hat, is simply superb, and as good as anything you will see in Monument Valley.

Magnificent View

By hinahina |

This place is well-known as a filming location for famous movies, and the majestic view of the open plains, straight road going gently downhill, and the reddish-brown boulders of Monument Valley was truly spectacular.

When filming, the road was easy to see, but there was quite a bit of traffic, so we had to be careful.

Great view, just like the movie

By cagatravel |

Great drive on highway to this very popular area which many tourists do as stupid does, take photos and pose on a road endangering themselves to get that photo. Be alert and enjoy safely.

Patience and cooperating weather needed!

My experience was marred because it was (what seems the only day of the year) a very rainy day and overcast, so the stunning views were limited. The Forrest Gump Point is overrun by tourists! On this rainy day there were a dozens people dodging cars and trying to take pictures in the road. If you want a "perfect picture" much patience is required.

Unreal!

By KKTraveler |

So we were crazy tourists and did this...it was so much fun. We did not pay the $20 tribal entrance fee to drive around monument valley...you see the highlights from the road. We did stop at the Forrest Gump point and it was hysterical. A bunch of cars were pulled over and we were all waiting to jump into the road to take a picture. Any time of day is fine as you see the skyline of monuments. Definitely do this if heading along the way. We were headed to Four Corners and then Mesa Verde National Park.

Did You Watch The Movie?

By NXTTRP |

It seems that if you didn’t know Forrest Gump Point was at Mile Marker 13, all you had to do was look at the horizon and know exactly where you are. This stretch of highway is as good as it gets in the USA, take your time and drive it with your eyes wide open.

Be careful standing in the middle of the road

By richard s |

Coming from Mexican Hat...you will see many pull outs and people in the middle of the road trying to get "their" photograph. Be careful and slow down. I pulled off in a spot along the road further down then the main larger pull off spots. Worked out great for me. Reminder cars and trucks consider you standing in the middle of the road as "road ornaments" Maybe they will speed up to join you there. Be careful.

Great view of Monument Valley

By Cristiano C |

Iconic view of Monument Valley fast stop for pictures and enjoy the panorama Be careful due to traffic and policeman patrolling the site recommended in early morning light or sunset

A fun place for a photo

By smcdaniel |

We've been here before but it's always a fun place to share with others. Make sure to get a good pic.

Million Dollar View

By Barbara H |

Lots of nice pull off points to not only view this famous stretch of road but to Monument Valley. Never tire of this view!

Great View

By kartikmexico |

Yes, is famous from Forrest Gump film, but it was there and famous much time before the film. The view is spectacular.

If you've seen Forrest Gump, this is iconic

By DWEdwardsson_ |

Great view of the same highway and buttes/pinnacles shot in the scene from Forrest Gump. Original sign marking the spot has weathered to the point of being unreadable. So many tourists walking out on the highway, you need to be very careful driving through.

Very interesting location

By Kathleen O |

Loved the location. Staff very sweet and helpful. Lovely setting to sit outside. The room and bathroom looked like they were working on update. Painting , trim woodwork not finished. Airconditioner looked like it needed a good clean. We did not use it.

What a view!

By WintersInMichigan |

Not only was it so much fun to take a pic in the road where Forrest Gump stopped running (mile marker 13) but it was just a beautiful sight! We were told it was the best place in the area for a sunset, but we were there mid afternoon.

Run Forest Run!

By Krr1975 |

Great photo stop! Run/walk like Forest. Beautiful scenery in the background. Definite photo stop worth seeing!! Several pull off areas around.

it's a photo op

By klausi2407 |

Like southernmost point and other of these places:
stop for a few minutes, take a picture and move on ...

Famous spot

By JimmyJackk |

Our lodge tour stopped here at the famous spot Forest Gump decided to quit running. It’s right on SR163 on long straight away.

Classic photo stop seen world over.

By Dave_W806 |

Stopped here on our road trip from monument valley north to capitol reef national park.

If you are passing it is defintely worth the stop, and getting THE classic road shot, a 2 minute stop.

Yes the best shots are from the middle of the road! - But show some common sense and you will be fine, the traffic is light enough that gaps open up to safely take pictures, and you can see traffic in both direction for a reasonable distance.

Having said that we still saw someone linger dangerously long in the road when a single car approached. They had 2/3 minutes leading up to car arriving and 2/3 minutes after, with no traffic so why cause the car to have to brake as they clearly saw the car. idiot!.

Plenty of space to safely pull off on, likely to be other car pars pulled off both sides.

You are shooting back south, so heading north dont go over brow of rise, stop as you approach the top.

If you are visiting the park from the south and then returning heading back south, im not sure its worth the 15 miles ish north.

Finally DO not just do this stop over touring the park. Its a nice photo stop but nothing compared to the actual park tour. doing a drive by of the actual park would be such a waste

Monument Valley/Forrest Gump Point/Mexican Hat/Goosenecks State Park

By 519dinesht |

We took this route on our way from Grand Canyon to Arches National Park. All along the Monument Valley you can witness various interesting rock formations and stop various scenic points. At mile marker 13 in Utah on US 163 , is where Forrest Gump stops running. Looking for the spot kept the interest in the car going. Since the scenic shot is behind you, I would recommend going several miles past that point and then turning back.
Mexican Hat, as a town and visitor site is OK, but we enjoyed the Goosenecks State Park, which another 8 miles away, a lot more.

I didn't know it....

By PaperogaArchimede |

I didn't know that this spot was the Forrest Gump point but as a lot of people stop there to take pictures I did the same and I found it a beautiful place to shoot some pics. Just do it not in the middle of the day as the light is too much!

Run, tourist, run.....

By dixiepeach |

.....to see this! This is a most iconic spot and you simply must see it. Everyone should put it on their bucket list. Stop at mile marker 13.

Cool view

By Tommy P |

Just a beautiful view from this point. Just like from the movie. Awesome backdrop. Usually locals set up down through there selling jewelry and stuff.

Amazing view!

By shwetha b |

Huge fan of Tom Hanks and Forrest Gump so I couldn't miss this. Mile marker 13 on hwy 161 that's the spot.

Wonderful view of monument valley. Drive from north to south on the highway to have this beautiful view before you.

Spend some 15 min or so here, you will be able to get a photo in the middle of the road.

Iconic

By Cynthia K |

We never did find the wooden sign. We didn't know it was there until after we left. MM13 on Hwy 163. Can't miss the crowds of people doing their photo op.
The best time for a photo with the red rocks is early am. Of course you can get a photo ANYTIME, I thought the rocks looked cool.
Be traffic aware!

Breathtaking Iconic Vista

By John D |

I drove three hours out of my way to get to this spot. There's not signage for the spot, but you won't miss it because there will be a stream of cars pulled over to get the true Gump picture. Two pieces of advice: Try to get there in the morning or early afternoon when the sun is behind you, otherwise you will be trying to shoot your iconic picture right into the sun. Also, be aware this road is a major highway with high speed traffic. Everyone who wants the picture waits by the side of the road until there is an opening, then they run out to snap the selfie or photo, and then try to dash off before the next car arrives. It's dangerous - watch what you're doing - but it's worth it. A fantastic vista!

Classic photo op!

By Lisa B |

The photos tell it all! Yes we were in the middle of the street but there was zero traffic on this Sunday morning! Needless to say please be careful when the traffic is heavier!
Great fun place to stop before entering Monument Valley.
“Quiet, he’s gonna say something”

Makes Me Want To Buy a Shrimp Boat!

By 767NucEngineer |

A "must see" stopping point located between Mexican Hat and Monument Valley. No, I don't really want to buy a shrimp boat!

Monument Valley

By AZmountaingal2 |

It looks just like this. The view is unbelievable and should be done once in the morning and again in the evening.

Bacana

By Mardipp |

We left Williams for Page but made a deviation in the morning to know the location of the
Recording of the iconic scene from the film Forrest Gump
Forrest Gump Point is a famous observation point on Utah's US-163 Scenic Drive, near Monument Valley.
About 10/15 after passing the rotary entrance of the
Monument .
Local is free! The road is public, so you can park to take pictures.
Quick stop about 15/20 minutes.
After we met Forrest Gump Point we went to visit the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park cost of U$ 8,00 per Cover

We were at the end of July 2025

From the film

By Kevin S |

Yes, the road shot famous from the film is available at a roadside stop on HY163. It is a very picturesque location so if you are driving it why not stop?

Awesome quick stop

By lcjt01 |

If you are coming from Monument Valley going north, look for marker 13. That's where this Point is located. The Forrest Gump sign wasn't there when I stopped. There is coming and going traffic but it's not heavy traffic, just watch for cars. Otherwise, have fun at the spot where Forrest stopped running.

John Waynes old west

By J B |

It's almost like stepping back in time. Or like the Robert Earl Keene song, "The road goes on forever and the party never ends". It is a peaceful journey with breathtaking scenery over every rise. Dramatic and beautiful to be shared with friends.

For Forrest Gump freaks

By HaraldF |

I´m one of them. Plenty parking opportunities to get your photos. watch of for the fast drivers. Lots of people. really great to see where they shot the famous scenes.

Asphalt pullout for you to stop

By LoveToTravelTerrie |

We wanted to stop here on our way out of Monument Valley and were a little worried that we might not find it. I had read that it was located at mile marker 13 and appreciated knowing when/where to look. Not to worry as there was an asphalt pullout on both sides of the road for people to safely park. (And I didn't see any other pullouts in the area.) I did not see the Forrest Gump sign but it may have been either "removed" or it was on the other side of the road and I didn't care enough to look for it. This spot is also noted as being in Mexican Hat and that's not quite true. However, in looking at the map Mexican Hat is the closest town that you can use to assign this spot. Just know that it is not literally in Mexican Hat! But I recommend taking a few minutes to absorb the view while watching out for other cars!

American Southwest Landscape

By Russ Lacuata |

The location is known most notably as the spot where Forrest Gump ended his cross country run in the movie. Simply an unbelievable view.

Forest Gump run

By walter g |

Iconic scene from the movie Forest Gump. Monument Valley is pure American West. Scores of movies shot here. A must see for sure!

Beautiful

By OtPot |

What a thrill to see the place that Forrest Gump stopped running. The view is awesome, but there were a lot of other tourists there (as you might expect) having fun. If you were traveling toward Mexican Hat, it would be easy to miss.

Worth stopping for a pic

By AndyB5542 |

We were driving from Mexican hat, so we we’re driving right down this road.

There are several pullouts. You want to be beyond where any else is so they aren’t in your background.

Caution has been advised with traffic.

By Koenigralph ⛑👑⛑️ |

Who doesn't know the Forrest Gump.
And if you are already in the area a must for every visitor. Unfortunately, there are always a few irresponsible tourists who do not care about the traffic. Responsibility and consideration are required. I recommend taking the photo from 17:00 since great lighting conditions
Ambience: funny
to recommend: natural

Awesome

By Road271845 |

Beautiful location. The drive through here is awesome. If you enjoy geology and nature, this is a must see. Don’t think there is another place on earth that compares to this. Very remote and surreal, which is something I enjoy. Very few to no people.

Straight road in middle of nowhere

By François D |

Very impressive location even without Forrest Gump who gives something more to the place . A little bit dangerous to take the photo in the middle of the road with the heavy traffic

Loved this!

By coloradotraveler29 |

This was so cool! Friends had told us about it, and we were excited to see people there when we arrived. Everyone was having fun taking pix, and we joined right in. Definitely worth the stop!

Beautiful scenery

By LCF |

So glad we took advantage of this location to re-create an iconic movie scene. While we didn't visit "monument valley", we were blown away by the scenery driving on US 163 to and around MV.

Worth the stop

By Russell3939 |

We found this to be well worth the stop. We got here at 7:30 p and there was no one there. There is a sign marking the spot or you can put Forrest Gump hill into google maps and it will take you right there. There is no walking to the site. Just park. The views are amazing and definitely worth the stop.

MV

By theoljohnnyboy |

Whether you are a Forrest Gump fan or not, this an outstanding viewpoint along the Monument Valley. I woild drive up and back down US 163 so as not to miss any scenic opportunities to enjoy.

Beautiful View

By Paul L |

This is a great preview to the beauty of Monument Valley. This is the view as you approach from the East and Mexican Hat. If driving from the west it is just a few miles east of the turnoff to the park. Either direction you travel, don't hit all the tourists taking photos in the middle of the road.

Always a special view

By Harrison F. Carter |

Like so many others, just love this spot. Saw the Forrest Gump sign this time, which I missed, or it wasn't there, last time. Just special.

Fun stop

By lulubell742016 |

Great little pit stop for all gumpies 🤗 had a good time taking this road trip the drive to Utah is amazing

Stunning

By No A |

Really amazing views. Traveled in the fall before snows and the colors were amazing. Great area for driving, hiking, climbing or photos. No large cities close by but the small towns are very welcoming. Its pretty far out and a bit of a drive but the area is worth a visit.

Gotta do it....

By madgardener55 |

LOL, we just had to stop on our way out of " Dodge" to get the classic shot of the famous Gump Hill. It is like a party with everyone jockeying for position and shouting warning of the next car coming...Forest would be mortified!

Gump Point

By texasn8tv |

Our group of photographers stopped here early one morning in July. We were NOT the first people on site. :) Sunrise was very pretty and we were able to get lots of good photos and were amused by some "bloggers" that stopped by. Also there were a couple of people there working on a Porsche video for a German magazine. All in all it was an entertaining stop on our tour of the area.

Cool to see, be careful if you're taking photos in the middle of the road!

By Rhi21 |

I stopped off at this site on my drive to Monument Valley. It is a beautiful site and pretty cool to be in a place of movie history. I parked my car and took a photo of the Forrest Gump sign, and then walked a bit further down the road to admire the view. Make sure to take in the view, it is breathtaking. I ventured out in the middle of the road (with no traffic) and had another tourist take a couple photos. I saw other folks sitting in the middle of the road, posing for pictures...my advice is just to be VERY careful as there are cars driving through at 65mph (or more!).

You must stop if you pass by.

By msspss |

You just have to make a stop here if you're passing by.

If you want to have the same view as in the movie, you have to come in the morning.

Overwhelming

By Adventure beyond imagination |

An overwhelming spot for most of the visitors. From my point of view it’s more impressive to drive through the monument valley.

Worth a stop

By Kate |

This is just one of the many astounding views around Monument Valley, made famous by the classic scene in Forrest Gump. The spot is well indicated in advance and really do slow down because there are instagrammers lying all over the road in search of the perfect selfie. Great photo opportunity, worth waiting your turn!

Memories

By swissami19 |

On the way from Mexican Hat to Monument Valley we stopped a couple of times to get the perfect "Forrest Gump picture". We had a hard time finding the exact right spot (our travel guide gave us a wrong mile marker). Watch out for fast passing cars.

Middle of the Road Joy

By CavemanHHH |

Driving down Highway saw all these people standing in the road a mile ahead. I was like “what the hell”? Then I saw the sign Forrest Gump Point. REALLY? Just because of a movie? Well we got out on our way back trough, because there was o one there as early as we were. You can’t help to live the moment. Just be careful and get that iconic picture. It is very much worth the stop.

Wanted to see this for years

By Bewilderdave |

I've wanted to see Monument Valley since I first started visiting America and managed to squeeze it into a road trip this year.

It's definitely impressive but compared to the other destinations on our trip it was second rate.

Bryce Canyon, Horseshoe bend (fantastic) and Sedona all outshone what I thought was going to be my highlight.

Definitely worth seeing if you are passing through or close by but wouldn't recommend spending any length of time there. We travelled from Lake Powell, to four corners which is also worth a visit just for the novelty of standing in four states at once, then did Monument Valley, spent the night in Kayenta before moving on.

Glad I've seen it but there are more impressive places.

Iconic view

By Viggenboy |

You've seen this in every travel show and road trip movie so you have to see it for yourself and it does not disappoint

Forrest Gump fan so had to atop

By Jay W |

It’s not too hard to find the spot, just look for all of the people parked on the side of the road. It is hard to get a quiet shot with good lighting unless you’re very patient. Be careful on the road because the hill blocks traffic view from the North. The Forrest Gump sign is on the West side of the road.

Photo Op

By maldenmusic |

While visiting Monument Valley last week, we stopped here after finding the sign. Sign is faded and hard to find if you're not looking for it. Native Americans were selling jewelry at this spot so after we stopped to look at that, we found the sign. This normally busy road was very quiet (probably due to Covid-19) so we were able to take a few pictures in the middle of the road.

Families in middle of Highway trying to commit suicide

By Sharon S |

First off, great photo op. Many safe pull outs.
The bigger entertainment is all the nut jobs taking pics with their families in the MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, in pursuit of proving they are way dumber than Forest; either that or the family section of the Darwin Awards.
We came over the crest of a hill and could not believe our eyes. What looked to be a road cone in the middle of the road was a teenager with friends, scurrying to get out of the way of our 7,000 lb truck doing 65. People were sitting their kids in the middle of the road. Tourists were setting up camera tripods in the middle of the road. The whole scene is like a morbid Russian Roulette death wish. Sick, but very entertaining.
No where else but here.

Great to visit but watch out for tourists in road!!

By Claire G |

We enjoyed stopping here and got some good photos, but there are lots of people who seem willing to risk their lived to get the shot in the middle of the road. We had to wait ages while some people took about 20 different pictures before they moved out of the way.

Great place to stop

By duffus07 |

We stopped on the way between Moab and Monument Valley.
A real film buff photo op

Watch cars coming both ways its busy!!!

Beautiful Spot

By Michael C |

Found the spot and wife and I each took a picture. Was hazy on that day because of a fire west of there but not too bad. If you ever try it watch out for traffic... not that it's heavy but people tend to fly on the straight stretch.

Not a big fan of the movie but worth stopping for a few pics

By Ziggy W |

Not a fanatic about the movie but why not stop for a few pics? After all it is a magnificent view. Apparently the state kept taking down the sign in years past, due to traffic safety, but looks like they relented now and made a pull off spot. Take a picture with the sign and a few pics of the road. Be careful if you go onto the road, but everyone passing by seems to be a good sport about it and doesn't try to squash you, at least in the off season. The perfect picture is spoiled a bit by the bootleg souvenir shop down the road a bit but a little careful framing of the pics solves that! It's one of those things that you have to do just to say "I bin there, dun that"!

Missed Opportuniy

By Karrst |

We inadvertently stopped here for my wife to buy some Navajo Jewelry. There was no sign and only realised when we were going through some information the day after we left Monument Valley, of where we had stopped. Never mind always next time.
The site does offer some great photo opportunities especially if you want to create the iconic shot from the film, but beware of the traffic.

Nice views

By kagatlin |

If you are visiting Monument Valley, it is worth driving north on highway 163 a few more miles to see this area made famous by the Forrest Gump movie.

Bucket List Item

By Nicole S |

A must-see when traveling to/from Monument Valley. This famous roadway was in many movies but has now earned the title of "Forrest Gump Point." Beautiful!

Beautiful

By Abrianna C |

Beautiful drive! Pass Monument Valley heading towards Mexican hat for the classic photo shot if heading north.

we stayed in View Hotel for two nights, then drove to this point

By rainbowinthesky1230 |

Such a great road trip and we got up early from our hotel we stay ( the View Hotel), then we made right to 163, marker 13 is Forrest Gump running place, Its kind of chilly morning, we pulled over the car on the side of road, make sure its safe to get out from your car, better go in the morning, perfect sun light, I think its so beautiful scenery, we like it very much, I took some beautiful photos

Be safe there, since there are cars in both way

Great views of Monument Valley

By xalx |

It's a good bit of fun, great spot for a photo. There's lots of people stopping and walking on the road but all the drivers were very respectful and going slowly in this area.

Take your time getting there

By Dave L |

This iconic viewpoint willl take you several hours to get there from just about anywhere...its probably easier to find the general location of the mile marker by looking for Medicine Hat, Utah in Google Maps...take plenty of water as well, as there are no structures nearby to assist you...

Supid is as stupid does

By ebgray@disputed.com |

So many people were lying down in the middle of the road paying no attention to traffic. All for the sake of a photo to recreate a moment that didn’t happen in an old film. (FG didn’t lie down in the road, he just stopped running.) Never underestimate the intelligence of people. We saw several near misses with semis who can’t stop quickly.

Stop at the pull off before mile 13

By vaca13579 |

We were coming from Monument Valley and we stopped at the pull off right before the official mile 13 stop. No crowds. Can't tell the difference and its easier!

Great name for a beautiful highway view

By Tom |

This is one of those beautiful sore that makes one enjoy driving through the American Southwest. The view is beautiful and awe inspiring.

Breathtaking

By Kira G |

I didn't realize why all these people were in the middle of the road for this iconic shot....but now I see why. Middle of October was light in traffic...and cloudy, rainy day helped the visual. It's a once in a lifetime experience.

Photo opportunity

By Connie E |

Just a small pullout to have a photo opportunity with traffic going by. We appreciated it for what it was. The spot where Forrest Gump ends his famous run. Took lots of photos coming and going to Monument Valley.

Great photo ops

By FYL003 |

We drove Highway 163 northbound. The photo stop is at mile marker 13, looking backward. For south bound traffic, the mile marker is 14.
There were not too many cars at the pullover stop since it was on a Sunday. There were a number of people standing in the middle of the road taking photos. The driving speed limit is 70 mph and there were cars traveling on the road. A note of caution for both the drivers and vacationers at this stretch of road. The best is to stay on the road side for the photos.

DON'T RUN INTO THE ROAD!

By FrontierJ |

The week before we arrived, two people were killed as they ran into the middle of the road to get their picture taken while jumping in the air. The cars come down this highway at 65 miles per hour and not everyone is paying attention to the road as the views are beautiful. So just don't run out into the middle of the road. Take your picture at the side.

Amazing View

By travel-the-world66 |

I had dreamed about coming to this road for years since I saw the movie Forrest Gump. The location is very picturesque. I couldn't help coming here twice to take photos.

Great View

By Paivar |

Cool spot - obviously made cool for a lot of people from the movie but still such an awesome view looking back down the valley.

A must stop if you have seen the movie

By doodlebugakj |

Loved the movie so of course had to stop and get a couple pictures.. Had my daughter get out and run down the road a bit!!

Nice stop for quick snapshot

By Tantiko |

A quick fun stop on our way to Mesa Verde. There’s a few points along this stretch where you there are some small shoulder bays but the view from each won’t differ much I don’t think, but otherwise stop close to the top of the incline. Being a straight stretch of road, vehicles will come along at speed, so chose your camera settings as much as possible before venturing to the middle of the road to snap your shot.

Awesome!

By WeLove2Travel2345 |

We are big fans of Forrest Gump, so this spot was a must during our road trip. First, this is such a beautiful place on its own, it is already worthy of many stops for photos. Yet with everyone around snapping pics and having fun, and with the movie scene on our mind, it was a blast! We were very cautious and vigilant that this is a highway and that cars and trucks fly on through.

Awesome place to visit..

By neeshah |

We were on visit to monument valley & we stopped by this point to take pictures. The view is worth visiting.

Can’t Resist

By CavemanHHH |

At 1st we had no idea why the speed limit sign said 45MPH ahead (was 65). We started seeing people standing in the road at a distance.
Crazy people? No, just caught up in the moment. We just drove on by going to Gooseneck State park. On the way back to Sleeping Bear Campground we just had to stop. The draw to get out stand in the middle of the highway and do the Forest Gump walk is just too enticing.
JUST BE SAFE, because not everyone understands or care about your moment in the sun. Take the time to get your iconic picture

Great chance for wonderful panorama photos

By idraginlady |

This entire trip on US163 is non stop stopping to click and go "wow". this is a great view. Hope the light is right when you get there to bring out the colors. Cool formations on the right and left as well.

Beautiful Views from this Iconic Location

By mrsjpvan2 |

This location is not marked along the highway but there is a souvenir stand near the general location with parking. Lots of turnouts line this stretch of road, all with beautiful vistas. Watch out for tourists who stand in the roadway to get a photo from this location.

So fun for photo ops!!

By Trisha H |

Just watch the mile markers as you are driving South on Route 163 and you can't miss it. My boyfriend and I had a blast posing for photos here. We arrived at sunset on a Friday night and amazingly were the only people stopped there. Please be careful though! If you are taking pictures in the road, the cars and trucks come tearing down the highway at 70 mph, and because there is a hill you can't see the vehicles until they are getting close.

Iconic Point

By WindyandSun |

This iconic point came from that famous movie. Good to know that Google map shows this point. There're several scenic lookout spots along on the HWY 163, We planned to take photos there during the sunset. The best spot I like was the last lookout toward Mexican Hat. In front of this iconic background, weI saw lots of crazy posts people would like to seal this moments. Watch out for native people who drove on this way asked for money. We met this group twice.

You just have to be there

By Tony M |

A place that I've wanted to see since I first saw it as the cover photo off of 'Best of the Eagles' CD, 10 years before Forrest Gump was ever there.

Unfortunately the day I was there it was overcast and apart from the other 'tourists' there was a set of roadworks just where the road levels out, but it did not stop my enjoyment, and being there should be on everybody's bucket list.

Picture Perfect view

By OziDiver |

This is the perfect view of Monument Valley and has been made iconic in the movie Forrest Gump. Located on 163 north of Monument Valley, you will find several pull offs where you can replicate the famous scene in the movie. There is usually several people all trying to get that perfect picture. The road is perfectly framed stretching off into the distance with the Monument Valley mesas providing the back drop.
There is also a small set of stores selling native American jewelry by the side of the road here.
Worth the stop for that classic photo.

Unanticipated beauty

By Roger S |

We had booked a room on the reservation hotel and were driving and had just passed Mexican Hat when we came to this spot. Wow. It was so exciting to see this spot as I recall the running scene from Forest Gump so vividly.

watch out for traffic

By gxh |

There is no sign, but you will know when you are there because of the people stopped there. about 15 minutes from Monument Valley. If you are leaving Monument Valley, turn right when you get to the highway. It's just down the road and in your rearview mirror.

Standing Where Forest Gump Stood

By Brad S |

Monument Valley is always inspirational. And to stand where Forest Gump stood... It wasn't too crowd and the weather was nice.

Finding Just the Right View

By Steve5863 |

Heading south on Hwy 163, you will certainly recognize this awesome view whether you are a fan of the movie or not. However, you will be tempted to pull over, take some pictures, get back in, drive a bit, and then realize a short distance later that the view was not quite right when you reach the next pullout.

While all the views are nice, the correct pullout, with just the right view, is on the left immediately in front of mile maker 13 and just past a Navajo gift shop on the right. While there is traffic, it is generally not heavy and can be seen coming from a long distance so, if you are careful, it is possible to go to the center of the road to get the exact view and perspective Forest had when he decided to stop running.

Peaceful

By KristinalynRN |

It was a great place to pull off the road and stretch your legs. We hit it when there were no other cars, which was very cool!

Out of Monument Valley by mile 13 marker is the spot. Morning is the best for the sun on the rock. But afternoon give a decent photograph too. You may also be lucky to see the dust storm sweep over it too.

A classic Forest Gump moment. If you've seen the movie, then you'll remember this scene. This place is a striking piece of American scenery.

We nearly missed it if not for the people in the road I am sure we would have. Good arming by the sign but itself not much to see. People sitting in road to have photos taken etc so difficult to get good shot what with traffic etc but is one of those has to be done things

Iconic view of the American desert

By chongcp |

While the only thing to do here is take photos, the breathtaking view will make you stop and stare, and then drive around a bit more to catch the rock formations at different angles.

Great spot for a picture!

By Mike M |

I love this location, always have. It's just south of Mexican Hat on the way to Monument Valley. It's common forpeople to stop and take a picture on the middle of the street. Movies and commercials are often filmed here as well as the popular movie, Forrest Gump. I personally enjoy the incredible view approaching Monument Valley as it always reminds me of how small I am and how vast the world is. Beautiful drive.

Bellissimo, un must

By Giacomo C |

The excuse for coming to this place is the film by Forrest Gump (perhaps only for this it deserves), but the reality is that really from here you can enjoy a beautiful point of view: the classic straight American road with, in the background, the rocky reliefs of Monument Valley. In short, what, in the collective imagination, is a bit the West of the United States.

It's a beautiful chance to take a picture and get run over

By SalfromIL |

We traveled the road many times and it's a hazard to walk into the middle of the road to get your Gump picture. That being said, we did it too.

It's worth 5 minutes if you get there when it's not busy. Otherwise, getting your time alone in the road can be an issue.

Worth the Quick Picture

By amyw2012 |

We are Forrest Gump fans, so we were excited to take a picture here. There was plenty of room to pull off the road. Just make sure you stay safe and are patient.

Famous and gorgeous view point just before arriving into Monument Valley

By Brad 🇭🇰 |

At mile marker 13 on Highway 163 south of Mexican Hat you find the location filmed in the award winning film Forest Gump. This is where Forest was seen running down the road with the buttes of Monument Valley in the background.

As you approach from the North, the Monument Valley butts rise most impressively while the long and straight Highway 163 seems to extend and then disappears into the distance.

This is surely one of the most iconic images of American roads and a place well worth stopping to admire the view and snaps a few photos if you are driving into or out of Monument Valley.

Note, the famous views are facing south towards the buttes. There are 2-3 pullovers where you can get out of your car to take pictures. Best to be a bit patient though. While they might not be much traffic here, everyone else is stopping for pictures as well. Give those in front of you a moment and they will be off. Then you can take your pics.

Scenic view of Monument Valley

By Amy Y |

Thank you travelers who suggested we stop at mile marker 13 for our iconic photo of this beautiful landscape!! We didn't have time to drive around the park, but definitely wanted to take in the views. Coming from the Grand Canyon, I'm glad we knew to look for marker 13 or we would have driven over the hill and missed it completely! There is a pull off on the side of the road, but definitely be on the lookout for cars as it's a well traveled road. A must see stop if you are in the area.

Great photo op

By Mara L |

I stopped here for an iconic photo and was happy I did! It’s a quick stop on your way East from Monument Valley and gives you a great view. Watch for traffic and please give them room. We had plenty of time to get our photos in and let vehicles pass without stopping for us.

Don't be a poor sport

By Steve Zorba |

Yes this is the iconic shot from Forrest Gump but it's also one heck of a drive. We caught the view as we were driving in to Monument Valley (coming from Four Corners). There is plenty space to pull over and take some photos. There is no sign or anything like that but it's pretty obvious when you see it. Also, there will be people walking around trying to take pictures in the actual road. Just be careful and drive slow and truthfully it's a just a minor inconvenience...so don't mind all the complainers posting reviews.

Epic pic moment!

By Duggan7 |

Caught it at sunrise and it was perfect. Easy turnoff points to stop and take this pic. The turnoff stops are located at this exact point of this picture so you will know exactly where to stop. Super easy to figure out.

Fun stop

By FabFamOfFour |

This was on our list of stops along our route from CO to the Grand Canyon. It was so fun. We're fans of the movie, so it was fun to stop and see where this scene took place. Lots of other people had the same idea. It was hard to get a good picture without anyone else in the background. And cars fly down that road fast, so we had to make our time in the road quick. Overall, this was a fun highlight of our trip. Monument Valley itself is amazing and this vantage point is as well.

vacation

By 831patriciar |

this was a fun stop. there are plenty of spots to pull off the road and get out and take pictures in and on the road. this route will eventually lead to monument valley. very colorful rock formations. beautiful drive

A must see if passing by

By Ursus_Polaris |

We passed in the afternoon, at the end of a long drive.

For those who know Forrest Gump, it is a must. Watch out for cars!

A good viewpoint for Monument valley in the dustance

Must stop

By Mark A |

This has been a bucket list item for my wife for years. We stopped on our way from Arches to the View Lodge in Monument valley. You can’t miss it there will be people pulled off the road everywhere. Be patient getting your photo people are on and off the road as traffic goes by. Weather wasn’t too cooperative overcast and very windy but still worth the stop.

Beautiful spot, hard to get good pictures

By Steve9172 |

The pictures you can see tell you need about the beauty of the spot. Be aware that you need to time your visit as the position of the sun makes pictures difficult to get, at least good ones.

More interesting than Mexican Hat

By Raul L L |

If your are near from Death Valley or Mexican Hat you need to take the picture as appears in the photo.
In my opinion it’s no very interesting to visit the Mexican Hat

Fun to see

By HeleneA636 |

The famous stretch where Forrest Gump was recorded and he decided to stop running and go home to Alabama...

It's a little far from Monument Valley, but it has its own unique charm.

By royufu |

This spot was used as a filming location for the movie Forrest Gump, and the straight road and the buttes of Monument Valley standing in the distance create a magnificent landscape.
While the view of Monument Valley in the distance is one of the elements here, there are plenty of viewpoints from which you can see Monument Valley from closer, so if you want to see it up close, we recommend a closer viewpoint.
However, this spot has its own merits as well.

Stunning place!

By InfinityRoad |

Its stunning and iconic place! Much better for me compared to national parks, but it depends what you are looking for.!

I’m pretty tired, I think I’ll go home now..

By Gary_Val_AZ |

Awesome to see..
About 16 miles north of Monument Valley visitors center on Hwy 163 there is a pullout for this famous Forrest Gump stopping point. There’s quite a few people trying to get the same pics as you, but if you just wait it out you’ll get the pics you want. There are cars, trucks and busses traveling on the HWY at 65MPH so be very careful..
So glad we drove to see this!

Love This!

By AvalonGeorgia |

Be prepared for a lot of other cars/people doing the same thing you are. Running out to the middle of the road and snapping a pic then running back before another car comes by. A quirky fun experience with a beautiful photo to remember it by.

Iconic view

By Vickers55 |

Iconic view of monument valley and worth stopping at. Can’t really condone the people who think it a good idea to stand in middle of road for photos

Quick fun stop

By Diane G |

Quick little fun stop on our drive from Page to Flagstaff. There are many scenic pull over spots so you are not stopping in the middle of the road. You get a few pics then move on.

Worth the drive

By DdubaU |

My wife and I drove out to Forest Gump Point after visiting Monument Valley. Other than having to wait your turn to get the scenic photograph, it was worth the drive.

Excellent vantage point

By TeePee |

If you are driving along this road to get to Monument Valley then you must stop to enjoy the view, quiet spectacular. There are little pull-over areas off the road so safe to do so.

Big risks for "that shot"

By Licia W |

There’s plenty see from the road without entering the park, thus saving yourself $20.

Driving along Utah 13 look out for Mile Marker 13 – known as Forrest Gump Point. This is where Forrest Gump ended his cross country run.

Don’t worry if you miss the milemarker, you won’t fail to miss the spot as there will be several tourists lying, sitting or standing in the middle of the road.

There is parking space here, where you can pull off the road. Park up and walk further down the road – that way you won’t get anyone in the background of your photos.
Looking back from the mile marker is a fantastic view of the valley.

Take care when taking and posing for your photos – remember that the road is constantly in use, and those truck drivers don’t care whether you get a good photo or not – get off the road!!

Beautiful Views

By llama |

Everyone does it. You can see the cars pulled off the road and people scrambling to get out of the way of cars.

A small sign says this is the spot, but just look for the crowds and watch out for cars. Yes, I had to run, just like in the movie. But the view.....just beautiful.

Fabulous visit to Monument Valley

By Ken D |

My wife and I spent several days in Monument Valley recently. While we never made the sunrise from Mile Marker 13 we did head North to view the Vistas from that vantage point after a great time in the Navajo Tribal Park (also known as the the View).

stupid tourists getting run over

By Allison H |

yes its a fab view but so many people are either running along it or standing in the middle of the road taking photos, it is just silly. best to go early of late and miss the coachloads. better views from inside the reservation and park.

Forrest Gump Fun!

By getfit40 |

My husband loves the movie and has always wanted to stop here and stand in the road. There were lots of people having fun! Just have to watch for traffic.

Amazing

By Theodora F |

Forrest Gump Point is a must see to add on your bucket list offering Spectacular views especially for photos. The ride to Forrest Gump Point is also very nice and scenic.

Breathtaking views!

By Marina M |

come early in the morning to catch a good light for photos and to avoid traffic and plenty of tourists making pictures

Too many stupid people

By jayo0556 |

We drove through here on the way to Valley of the Gods. There had to be at least a dozen cars on either side of the road. Quite a few of the people were in the middle of the highway trying to get “the shot” with their cell phones. No wonder death by selfie is becoming epodemic

Should you go out of your way to visit?

By Onephzw |

I had to come to this point. Mile marker 13. It's an iconic shot from movies and magazines. Checked.

Take a Soutwest memory picture

By Janka K |

Even if you haven't seen Forest Gump, this place is really iconic. I would say that a picture here might sum up your whole Southwest experience.
Taking the pictures is not that easy, though, especially if you don't want to have other people on your snaps, as a lot of tourists will park their cars somewhere near by. So it's either about skill, or being lucky regarding tourist load at the time when you stop by for your picture.
No tickets needed, this is a regular and used road where you can stop and take some pictures. Count with passing cars, including those with no tourists.

Quick Side Stop

By TextMeLater |

We drove through this area during our trip to the Mighty 5 and did didn’t disappoint. We did not stop anywhere except the famous section of highway where Forest Gump ran up the road. Very cool! We did see multiple dirt devils in the area, which was really cool as well. Be aware of oncoming traffic both ways if you do stop.

With the stop for a phito

By T G |

This long stretch is famous from Forrest Gump through to the eagles album cover.
Stop and grab a photo and take in the scenery.

Iconic

By gina1230 |

My brother in law from Ireland was obsessed with seeing this point. I drove out from monument valley to appease him. I was so glad I did ... we felt we were living not only the Forrest Gump moment but the whole American road trip experience... straight road and an amazing view of monument valley. The photos we took will look great when blown up and framed on a wall... quintessential photographic moment

Catch this View at Sunrise

By Christine R |

This is a spectacular view, but catch it at sunrise! That is the absolute “Wow!” moment to experience.

Awesome

By Red U |

Even the kids new it and it was worth the short drive. Easy to find and many others were there as well.

Stop and take a breathtaking photo !!!

By ArizonaJT |

The view of Monument Valley from Forrest Gump Point is AMAZING !! If you are in the area, you must stop and take a photo. There are no specific signs along the road that say "Forrest Gump Point", so use GoogleMaps to pinpoint the location. There is a paved pull-off on the side of Highway 163 between mile marker 13 and 14. For the best photograph, be there about 1 hour after sunrise for the best lighting. Take a picture of yourself running up the center of the highway just like Forrest Gump.

Iconic View...Sort Of

By AlphaRam |

We stopped to see this iconic view, but the wind was blowing pretty hard and obscuring the view. Also, a lot of traffic to also prevent the iconic photo. Still, if you are in the area, you have to stop here.

Don’t Risk Your Life for a Picture

By Bigredmachine |

As we came over the hill heading west on US highway 163, we saw dozens of people standing in the middle of the road. We thought there had been a horrible accident. As we drove closer, we could see it was just tourists risking their lives re-enacting the highway scene from Forrest Gump. With cars doing 70 to 80 mph down this grade, there is going to be a serious accident here. With that being said, it is a very scenic part of the highway.

Crowded

By Shrike2747 |

Spectacular and beautiful and exactly as it shows on the movie except for the numerous and crazy tourists endangering themselves and others

Cute stop on the way to Monument Valley

By Diane F |

Kind of a must do thing. I stopped by the sign for the photo at Forrest Gump Point. Nice photo of the rocks ahead in Monument Valley.

Great view. Be careful of people in the highway.

By Ed |

Ok. Sure. It’s a cool spot because it was in the movie. And if you’re careful with traffic you can get a great photograph. Also, it’s located on Route 163 which is not the road most people use to see Monument Valley, so you get a different perspective.
The only downside is that it is a five minute stop. You pull over, take the photo and…that’s it.
But it definitely has a cool factor. No doubt.

Great view

By M J |

Forrest Gump Point is between Kayenta, AZ and Mexican Hat, UT is beautiful. There were many pullouts along Hwy 163 so I took lots of awesome pictures.

Run forrest

By bobt354 |

If you go to the visitors centre from the east, its easily possible to miss this iconic landscape. You need to continue on main road for a few miles and you will see people standing in the road and you cant miss it in your rear view mirror.

The Forrest Gump deja Vu point!

By Hosh |

In the spirit of exploration, as we left monument valley to leave toward Utah, I happen to look in my rear view mirror and immediately stopped as something looked very familiar. I had a deja Vu moment but soon recognized this being the famous road Forrest was running on!

It's about 10 miles from monument valley and is an absolute must see!

Run Guys

By diswix |

Brilliant, everyone was helpful waiting and taking each other's pictures. Road quite quiet traffic wise and clear day

Not convenient to stop

By barkus1968 |

This is a novelty item. It is an impressive drive. It’s easiest to see from the car. It’s fun to see the scene.

Got to do it!

By 5cruffy |

There's a pull off at mile marker 13 and if the road is quiet (like it was for us) there is a good view in each direction so you can (carefully) take a picture in the middle of the road. The views are best if you are approaching from the North.

Run, Forrest, run

By logansrun98 |

If you're driving though Monument Valley, this is a fun and quick stop. There are places to pull off; it's around mile 13 but probably there will be people taking photos in the road, so you won't miss it. Please just be mindful of others and get out of the road when cars are coming by.

A must-stop for movie buffs

By BruinDan |

Located north of Monument Valley on US Scenic Highway 163, Forrest Gump Point is the iconic spot where Forrest ended his epic run in the 1994 film, with views of Monument Valley behind him. (NOTE that if you’re using Google Maps to find this location, it’s listed as “Forrest Gump Hill.”) There are large turnouts on both sides of the road (there’s even a road marker) where people pull over and run out into the middle of the road to get a photo or selfie of this famous view.

There are times of the day and year when this spot can be very busy with tourists and photographers trying to get their photo opportunity. Be patient as you wait your turn, have a spotter watch for traffic, and you too will be able to grab a photo of this memorable vista!

Travel records

By Sheryl |

Agan Hill is one of the most touching moments of my journey. Standing by that straight road that extends into the wilderness, as if entering the classic picture of the movie Agan’s legend. The distant red rock mountains intertwined with the blue sky and white clouds, depicting a sense of freedom and loneliness. There are no magnificent facilities here, but because of that pure nature and film memories, people stay for a long time. Despite the constant traffic on the road, many travelers still choose to take photos on the side of the road, so be careful about safety. For me, this is a double feast of mind and vision, highly recommended to friends who love cinema and beauty!

OH MY GOSH

By LuvHaribo |

Super beautiful and shows the beauty of the USA and the open road. Lots of photo opportunities. Would recommend and definitely do again. Worth going out of your way for. Cannot stress how cool this drive is!

Forrest stopped here

By Terence H |

Okay, so the sign is easy to miss but it is essentially at mile marker 13 on a sloped part of the road, Line yourself up with the monuments and you can't miss the spot. They are generally selling jewelry right there as well. It was fun to hit what is likely an iconic or cult location. Just good fun to take a great selfie.

Iconic view

By King Trippy |

A beautiful opportunity for photos. The makers of 'Forrest Gump' did well picking this location for filming. It can be difficult at times with so many people driving by and stopping but well worth a short stop.

Awesome

By pers0nalview |

You can never get tired of the views around Monument Valley. It is one of the most magical scenic areas I have found. Must See!!!!

Gorgeous and Iconic

By GiantScreamer |

Just a small mile mark on the side of the road, Forrest Gump Point is a beautiful view of what Utah has to offer. Even if you're not a fan of the movie, it's still worth a short stop for the view

It's free, so stop and act like a runner with a low IQ.

By John S |

I made my wife take a picture on Abbey Road, so she said for payback, we were going to have to stop and get a Forest Gump picture. There's actually a small turn off on the side of the road and there were 2 or 3 other cars doing the same thing. Even if you don't like the movie, the view is incredible. We waited until the traffic was clear and then my wife ran up the road and I took a picture. Good times. If you're travelling through the area, stop and do it. It's free and now she shows everyone her picture on her phone along with Tom Hanks.

Must do!

By Arkansastraveler74 |

Must do! We caught traffic with no cars which made pictures and video just like the movie! We went home and watched Forest Gump just for this part.. beautiful area!

Nice to say I've been there

By Brie L |

Really cool to identify the spot and then take t in. Beautiful landscapes and views of the space and span of the mesas and we had an incredible view of the storm clouds and lightning taking over the valley.

Iconic American View that never gets tired...

By Mary D |

Life is short...DO pull offroad, take a breather and digest the scenery! Even walk out to the middle of the road (be careful!) to take photos where the vista awaits you and everything that is Monument Valley and elsewhere in the area. This place screams America!!

And please, respect our Native Americans on their land...they were here before us!! ;-)

Well worth the little extra effort to find

By cdpcaca |

Iconic spot. It's a must do if you're going to Monument Valley. Even if you don't know about or don't care about Forrest Gump, it's a fantastic view of Monument Valley. If you come from Kayenta, past the entrance...it's about 10 minutes further up the road toward Mexican Hat UT. Cars are good about slowing down and yielding for people in the road taking pictures.

Why Not ... On your Way to Monument Valley

By Chuck2010 |

By far the best time is early morning with the sunrise ... little or no traffic and the best color due to the sun's low rays

You just have to stop

By Art and Ginny |

If you have seen the movie and are headed to Monument Valley, you just have stop and get a picture. Of course, so are everyone else so be patient and careful as this is an active highway.

A must see

By rich65k |

Stop and take your photo where Forrest Gump stopped running. You will not be disappointed in the view!

A breathtaking view of the Great West

By knishika |

If you approach from the direction of Monument Valley, you'll know because the speed limit will be lowered just before.
(American traffic authorities can sometimes be flexible like that.)
However, it is technically illegal for pedestrians to walk on American highways without permission, so we recommend taking photos from a parking spot on the side if possible.

Epic!

By Natalia B |

Love the scenic view... is very close to Monument Valley, like 20 minutes away. Just go and have fun taking pictures!!!

Iconic Drive

By caribbeantraveler91 |

You’ll know it when you see it. The scene from Forrest Gump will immediately enter your mind. There are several pull offs to stop and get pictures. Many will dodge traffic to get the perfect picture. Fun stop, and won’t take much time.

great photo op

By yogaperson |

we went at dusk and there were tons of people taking photos-even a model-then they cleared out and we watched stars stretch all the way to the horizon. Beautiful desert spot!

Worth the drive

By Jenna |

Iconic location and an iconic movie! The views are incredibly breathtaking! The drive is somewhat long and you will spend an hour or two in “the nothing.” But this view as well as the monuments are worth it all!

Incredible view but 'Forrest Gump'?

By Berkshire_Rob |

OK I know this was a scene in the Forrest Gump movie, however for me it is far more famous as the album cover of 'The Best of The Eagles' album. If you're unfamiliar with it, look it up.

I was staying in Las Vegas with my two sons, and decided to take a couple of days out to visit Monument Valley. Fortunately as it turned out, the hotel at the visitor centre was full, and the nearest alternative I could find was at Bluff, a fair drive to the NE of the Valley. So we set out after spending time at MV, and looking in my mirror, though 'Wow, that's the Eagles'. I pulled over and enjoyed the view.

It is an amazing view, and photos just don't do justice to the vastness of the panorama that is laid out before you. People see the three mountains in the distance with the straight road running towards them, but the whole thing is amazing. Even my kids, usually more interested in electronic games, had to stop and stare.

We were lucky that since we came back the next morning we saw it with the sun in opposite positions. Well worth the visit and it won't cost you a bean.

Perfect scene from the movie

By LWarmwater |

Not sure what other people saw or were complaining about. Maybe it's the time of day I arrived. Got here at 7PM in early August. Knew it was near mile marker 13. I pulled off and found the Forrest Gump Point sign. Then I noticed the people down the road taking pictures. So, I moved toward them.

Yes, it's in the middle of the highway as that's where Forrest was running. Don't make it to be anything more than it needs to be.

And Yes, since it's in the middle of the highway, you have to watch traffic that is coming at you in both directions at speeds up to 80mph.

Yes, you have to "wait your turn" to take your pictures, but wait, it'll be worth the effort.

No, I didn't have to pay anyone money to do this.

And, finally, YES, my entire family enjoyed the 20 minutes we spent (on the road) taking photos.

Stop by, enjoy it.

Great place for a photo

By giwpriestap |

We were travelling from Monument Valley to Four Corners and took the detour to get a photo here. The view is so very nice...as are nearly ALL of the views in the area...it's a good trivia reference...

Poor photo op if that is what you are hoping for.

By Terry W |

There are now so many cars and roadside stands here selling native jewelry, pottery, etc., that you cannot take a nice photo here. I don't want to begrudge anyone the opportunity to make a buck, but why ruin the view??

Family road trip

By Richard K |

Don’t know how it has become Forrest Gump Point. A bit of an insult to a place that was famous long before Forrest (as much as I like him) was even dreamt up. So many westerns filmed with this view, Eagles album cover and probably a lot more. Having said that it’s a great place to visit. Best time is dawn and watch the colour changes that occur over that time. This viewpoint is only minutes away if you are staying in Mexican Hat and that is what I would recommend. First saw this view 30 years ago and several times since then. One major thing now that hinders views and look ugly-far too many road signs advising drivers of pull out points etc. Surely people can work it out as we have over previous visits and remove the ugly and intrusive signs!

"I'm pretty tired, I think I'll go home now."

By Todd S |

Located on UT-163 at mile marker 13. I didn't see a sign but knew where to look and was not disappointed. There is a spot to pull over on both sides and there was a little stand on each side selling something not sure what. I pulled over, got out of my car, snapped two quick pictures and went on my way. The drive up from Arizona was more than worth it without this neat little stop. I continued on my way to 4 Corners and also got to see the Mexican Hat too. What made it better was watching the movie later that night and comparing it to my picture. It's a great stopping point for sure. Anyone even remotely familiar with the movie probably knows this scene and would appreciate the view.

Classic view on the album of "The Eagles"

By Felixstowe2016 |

Stopped here many times always a fantastic picture leading you into the magical Monument Valley. Good place for night time pictures as well.

Cool Stop

By Carl H |

If you are a Forrest Gump fan, this is a must stop. Be careful to choose the right location as there are several pull-offs in the general area, none of which are marked. No matter where you stop, you will get a great view of Monument Valley.

Beautiful

By Irene C |

Iconic and wonderful place, impossible to remain impassive in front of a landscape like this. To do early in the morning, when there are not too many cars and with sunlight in favor.

By jarvo2001 |

Amazing view its different every day depending on the weather. What's more... Its completely free to see. Several safe pull outs

Car Forrest Car

By Paul S |

Life is like a melted box of chocolates- a big gooey mess when run over at 70 mph. Seriously, reenacting a movie scene is fun but not worth your life. I nearly hit a couple of folks who were so intent on their I phones in the middle of the road they weren't watching traffic and walked out in front of me. Missed seeing the actual sign because I was watching the road. Lots of other people were stopped along the way for a couple miles past the actual site. We took in the view at a safer spot closer to Mexican Hat.

Photo Opportunity

By VillagerRick |

This section of highway was made famous in the film. We were on our way through the area, and had to stop with lots of other people. There are a couple of pullouts to get your vehicle off the road, and the traffic has to slow way down to avoid the (sometimes oblivious) picture takers. Not much of a destination, but if you are traveling through you almost have to stop.

Great place to stop for a photo

By diinslc |

This was a fun place to stop on our way to Monument Valley. Lots of people doing the same, everyone getting their own Forrest Gump moment.

No Title Needed!

By MichaelCSammamish |

The place where Mr. Gump stopped running. Not much more needs to be said on this! Awesome place to take photos. Can time it to be able to sit on the highway. Best time is late afternoon with sun starting to set.

Mile Marker 13

By Nan H |

Would have been a 5 if not for the bus-load of fellow tourists who arrived shortly after we did. Be aware that this is a popular site on a well travelled road. Would have enjoyed it more if had been less busy.

By LiketoeatCincinnati |

There are a few scenic places to stop on the road to Monument Valley to see this. This is the classic view.

Iconic picture

By Antonio B |

This is the famous place from the Forrest Gump movie. Usually we have a light traffic so it us essy to take the picture from the middle of the road.

about 15 miles out of the valley

By ldicks0n |

it was cool hunting down the spot, but when i got there, there were numerous asian tourists there dragging the U.S. flag on the ground so they could stand in the middle of the road (nearly getting hit by a semi and others) so they could take a photo with it. Their U.S. tourguide, who was a veteran he claimed, yelled at me when i yelled at them to knock it off. There is a turn off there so its easy access, and Navajo indians there selling jewelry.

Tourist in The Road

By mark m |

As we drove on hwy 163 to Mexican Hat, UT I was looking for the spot on the highway that was shown in Forrest Gump. Approaching the crest of a hill, we noticed 15-20 young people in the middle of the road. We slowed down and parked in a turn out area. We noticed the tourist were back in the middle of the highway taking pictures. The view that we hadn't seen was BEHIND us (facing south back to Monument Valley. It is a nice view of the monuments as we took pictures as well.

Awesome -

By Erika H |

We thought about paying to go into the monument valley, but after reading reviews here, about the road conditions we chose to pass on it. And are glad that we did. We saw the best parts from the state roads - the ones that you see in the movies. We jumped out of the car a couple of times and took pictures on this iconic road.

A Beautiful View

By roziet4422 |

It's a touristy thing to do. Beautiful views, but can get busy with a lot of people crowding the area. Be careful of the traffic while taking your photos.

Complete waste

By 33searcher |

Not sure why people would list this stop as a legit "attraction" . Watched a woman sit in middle of highway with her child taking a picture until a truck horn blasted her and she ran shrieking into the underbrush. Pay the Navajo tribe $20 or you can see these beautiful sights from the many turnoffs on the road.

Great view!

Was very cool to see this view and to be at this spot after seeing it used in so many movies. Totally worth a stop if your in the area.

Beautiful view!!

This drive has beautiful views all around. Well worth stopping to check out “Forrest Gump point” at mile marker 13. Very cool.

be mindful of cars

so have never seen forrest gump, i know weird! but this is apparently the part in the movie where he stops running. i wasnt interested in this because of the movie but rather the scenic view, the monuments in the background and just the stretch of road in the middle. great spot for pictures but just be really careful of cars going by, lucky you can see them easily.

Nice, straight stretch of road

Been here, several times, and keep coming back. For whatever reason, I'm drawn to this entire area (to include alley of the Gods). Keep in mind this is located on the Navajo Reservation, so please respect that. Last time I drove through, all the Native American vendors were still closed; the communities are also still closed to the public.
