While visiting the area, we decided to treat ourselves and take a ride on the Georgetown Loop Railroad. While speaking with the ticket agent (a very nice person), we were told that if we bought the Presidential tickets, we would have great snacks and sit on really comfortable upholstered seats while enjoying the ride. We decided to buy the tickets, and once in the train, we were told to sit at a small wooden table in the back of the car, next to the refrigerator. We asked about being moved, but were told that the comfortable benches were going to be filled up. There were also a few other wooden table sets filled with people who also looked confused and upset about their seats.
The ride was okay, but I wish I hadn't spent the extra money for the special car. On the way out, we walked through the parlor car, and realized that we would have been more comfortable there. I sent a note to the company, commenting on our concerns, but never received a response.
The servers were very nice...I just wish there had not been a misrepresentation about the "Presidential" experience. If you go, I would not recommend spending the extra money.

This was a great trip. Since the pandemic has hit they only have open-air seating, which is actually amazing! The staff was so nice and very helpful. The ride had very beautiful views. My one complaint is that the people who came on the tour bus got to go before us. We got there early and were the first ones in line but still had to wait for a long line of people to go before us. I would highly recommend going on the Georgetown loop, it is absolutely remarkable.

My family rode in coach which imo is the best deal for this experience. You just dont have enough time and the views weren't that impressive from the train to pay up for the fancier options. Cute Christmas decor and Santa was on board talking to the kiddos. Ive done the Royal Gorge which I thought had more to offer views wise. The best part is going over the bridge in the beginning giving a brief view of Georgetown.

Such a nice trip and the views are amazing as well as the history. The ride was smooth and there was plenty of room to sit. Great for families.

Overall, a fun experience. We enjoyed the train ride. If you sit near the engine, make sure you wear a hat as ash will fall on you. The scenery was nice and the ride pleasant. We were a bit disappointed in the Everett mine tour. You only get to see a very small piece of mine. It is more like a talk about how mining was done while standing in a mine. The tour guide was great, she just didn't have a whole lot of mine to show us.

Georgetown Loop was a great experience for our family. I highly recommend the parlor car and the mine tour. The staff were very friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Even our 21 year old and 18 year old had a good time. Beautiful views and a nice trio back in time.

Rode the Victorian Holiday Train on New Year's Eve. We sat in the Parlor car, it was so much fun. The snack was very good and super healthy. (The kids loved the hummus!)
Our attendant, Jennifer, was wonderful with our kids and made our trip memorable. We will be back!

We did the train ride and the mine tour. Everybody was very friendly. We really enjoyed the mine tour. Our tour guid was knowledgeable and friendly. We found this to be very interesting.

We bought the tickets for the parlor car with gold panning and silver mine tour. Very happy we did! The gold panning was a highlight for the kids and the mine tour was actually much cooler than i thought it would be. Thank you to Corey for help with panning & a great tour! Recommend the parlor car for a few reasons, especially with kids - shade, snacks and drinks!

Beautiful mountain scenery, old but sturdy bridges, sightseeing is great and reasonable
Children of all ages are allowed. Gold/silver mine torus are a part of the adventure if desired

The trip is NOT a loop! The train runs up and back on the same rail. We missed seeing the better side scenery of the tour because we believed it was a true loop and would be able to see both sides. Very disappointing.

Loved this little adventure into the hills. Everyone really friendly. A real sense of travelling back in time. Thoroughly enjoyed the hold up and catching the baddies scenario. Weather wasn't kind to us with thunder storms and heavy rain before and after but no one minded that we moved the picnic table under the entrance to the restrooms for shelter, it was at the end of the day and we did move it back again! Didn't do the mine visit (one of our group would not have liked being under ground) but would like to if we are ever lucky enough to be back in Colorado.

What a wonderful half day stop! We did the morning train and added the mine tour. Both were so much fun! Being able to get off the train and tour the mines was a great way to stretch our legs. The staff was friendly and very knowledgeable. Our 2 year old can’t go in the mines so him and I stayed outside playing in the little kids area, walking around and speaking with staff. So much fun! I would highly recommend this stop. Followed by eating lunch in town and exploring that area.

Wasn't terrible but wasn't good. While they did account for 6 feet apart and the people there were very nice, the scenery and train ride did not live up to our expectations. It was tough to get a good view from both sides of the train and there were a lot of the same views of trees and the highway. More than anything, it was about the highway. I can definitely see this being fun for kids who haven't been on a train before, but as a young adult who has never been on a train, this was very underwhelming.

This is one busy attraction considering it was a Wednesday in September. I’d pre booked tickets but it was clear that this attraction gets full all day every day at this time of year. We had good weather so open carriages were not a problem - maybe sit towards the back of the train if you want photos of the front of the train passing over the bridges. I think the platform side of the train getting on a Georgetown has a better view but it's not a big issue. The train will head backwards from Georgetown for a minute to get a run at the gentle incline. The train runs to Silver Plume where the locomotive will move to the other end and pull you back. The "loop" is not a round continuous circuit but because the train line loops over itself to gain height. Good fun for all ages if a little pricey for an hour+ ride.

Such a cool experience! The train ride was fun, with great views, employees were knowledgeable & friendly. If you want to make sure & hear the commentary, sit on the benches near the speakers. We also did the Lebanon mine tour w/gold panning. It really completed the whole experience. Make sure & bring a jacket if doing the mine tour. We had our 9 year old grandaughter with us, and I felt she was the perfect age, for both activities!

We enjoyed the experience very much and recommend it to anyone interested in Colorado history. Add the silver mine and gold panning tour, its very interesting and the guides are great.

What a thrill it was to ride this steam locomotive through beautiful Rocky Mountain scenery! Three generations of our family, ages ranging from 2 to 72, rode the Georgetown Loop recently and we loved it. We sat in the car right behind the engine on the way out; this car then became the "caboose" on the way back -- an excellent way to experience the powerful sounds of the engine and whistle, and then have the relative peace of being at the end of the train. Some of the younger kids benefited from wearing headphones as the sound was a bit overwhelming at first. We loved it and were sorry when the ride ended. For sure we will return!

We went on the Georgetown train to see the fall leaves and fortunately we timed it right as we bought our tickets ahead of time. Pros: It was really beautiful, we all enjoyed the train ride. Cons: You cannot understand what they are saying on the speakers, the trains are packed, I wish that they would spend some money and get new speakers. They charge extra for the Pumpkin Festival, I thought it would be outside and fun to see and maybe get a pumpkin. It's in a dark museum, they give out snickers etc to the kids & the kids get a pumpkin. Just another way to make money.
I would not recommend going if it was not fall, as the train goes by a highway and I don't think it's too scenic, especially when you are paying almost $28.00 ($31,95 for a Pumpkin Festival).

There are three sisters who are the greeters, and they are so cute and friendly. For our train ride, it got down to 41 degrees (in June) and hailed when we were at the other station. Be sure that you use the bathroom before leaving the train station. Take a blanked (even in the summer), because you might wish that you had it.

By Redheadmath50 |

First, the actual train ride is not one hour and 15 minutes as stated on their website. It takes them 20 minutes to get people on and off the train which means you are on the train for only 35 minutes. Second, it is not a loop as described but a ride that goes back and forth between two towns. Third, there should be two lines for tickets- one for tickets purchased on-line and the other for tickets be purchased at the door. Very inefficient use of time. This train ride is a complete waste of time and money! There are much better things to do!

Visiting amazing friends for their wedding weekend, my wife and I were swept away on this rail guided journey! The train ride consisted of many spectacular views, plenty of history, warm hospitality and plenty of complimentary snacks and soft drinks for the adventure. I encourage anyone who is looking for an experience that is relaxing and extraordinary! Our experience was just after a fresh blanket of snow laid to rest adding extra magic!

Field trip for the teens. My son and I had been before when he was younger but I thought it would be fun to ride again. Took his classmate with us as they have been stressed with going to school in a pandemic. We chose a weekday during fall break and encountered little traffic. It had snowed the day before and it was pretty. Unfortunately some riders were unhappy that they couldn’t choose where they could sit and that there was snow on some seats. It was cold and some were unprepared. We had our winter coats and gloves but when the wind blew it was chilly. There were only three groups who added the mine tour as well so we bundled into the car with first access to the platform and off we went. It was amazing. The trees and soaring birds. The sun and the snow on the ground. The rails, rivers and bridges. I love trains and it was fun when the whistle blew. The conductors provided information as we went along and sometimes it was difficult to hear over conversation but i didn’t mind. The ride was beautiful. The mine tour was great. We had the tour guide to ourselves as one of the parties who signed up didn’t come on board the train. So the teens got to ask lots of questions and look at everything without being crowded. Everyone was so friendly. Tip- go to the bathroom at the station before getting on as no restrooms on train. There’s an actual bathroom at the mine stop which was great. The ride was fabulous and informative. For me the best part was how much the kids enjoyed themselves. We will be back. It never gets old.

By Dale R |

Scenic train ride. I would of rated it higher but we did not have a steam engine. That would of made it nicer and more authentic. Because of COVID it was just an out and back that lasted one hour total. We could not get off the train at the turn around. The railroad did an excellent job of spacing people though out the train for distancing although they really did not enforce the mask requirement enough to satisfy me. Once the train got going many people took their masks off. We did not do the mine tour. I believe it would of been a better experience if we were able to do the tour. Yet with COVID I do not feel I would of been comfortable in a enclosed space with others.

Took our group of 29 high school seniors/chaperones on a Colorado Senir Trip... The Georgetown Loop train / Silver Mine tour was such a great all-around experience! The train ride itself was wonderful. The views from the train were breathtaking around every bend, and the commentary and history were interesting and well-done. The sound was very clear and easy to understand. Train staff were very helpful and energetic - you can tell they enjoy what they do.

We did the silver mine tour at the end. It was super interesting!! I learned a ton. Immersive experience with great guides who also love what they do, which makes for an extra fun learning adventure.

This site is so well-run and so well-done. A must!

I was very disappointed with our experience on the Georgetown Loop lighted forest train ride. This was a gift for my in laws and I was hoping for so much more. We were in the parlor car and they had bright lights on inside the train for half the train ride. You couldn't see outside at all with the lights on. They definitely could have been dimmed if they needed to be on. When we got to the lighted forest part of the trip, the outside lights were so so. They need to come to downtown Castle Rock to see how to really decorate a tree nicely. I would be interested in a fall color train trip, but not again on the night train. I will say that the depot itself was nicely decorated and the free hot chocolate and outdoor fire pits were nice.

Georgetown Loop Railroad was awesome ride on train was excellent and the scenery was magnificent very interesting about the mine and railroad lot of history to be seen, I had a beautiful time doing this.

By Natasha M |

We did the Santa train. My kids had fun but were a bit bored. We did coach seating. I would return and do this again, but only if we sat parlor class or higher. Try the roasted chestnuts when you’re done - they’re pretty good!

By Charlie H |

we had an awesome tour of the mine (extended) and train ride. a lot of fun. the only downside is booking through the website crashed and we have been double charged. when we called up there was no remedy. otherwise an excellent tour once we got there.

By Beth R |

Excellent outing. People wonderful. a wonderful day for a train outing. Had lunch in town before riding train. A n K restaurant - excellent as well

By Journey697937 |

The staff at the Georgetown Loop was incredibly rude and made the experience difficult to enjoy. Save your money on the overpriced, short ride and go take pictures of the mountain goats at Mt. Evans or take a dip in the hot water at Indian Hot Springs. Not worth it.

Did the Georgetown Loop railroad ride this past weekend with a 2 year old and infant in carseat. Because the train wasn’t sold out we were able to keep infant in carseat, which was preferred! Beautiful scenery and my 2 year old loved it (once he got over how loud it was initially). We sat in an open air coach train. The train does make two 10 minute stops so have snacks/entertainment ready for little ones if you don’t plan to deboard at the stop. As an adult rider I enjoyed the history that was shared about the railway! Would do again with out of town visitors and can’t wait to go back with my son when he is old enough to enjoy the mining part.

If you are in the Georgetown area plan a couple of hours to take this quick train ride.
The views are amazing and you get a history lesson on the Gold and Silver Rush in Colorado.
We did have to move our seats due to a large family that just talked the entire time.
Find a peaceful place in the cars and sit back and enjoy the ride.

Was at night, so lots of fun to see the holiday decor lit up in the forest. Yummy drinks (adults) and visit from Santa. Buy you tickets in advance online and try to go during off times. We went on a Thursday night and it was still full. The weekend was worse, with everyone coming up from Denver. Was a great trip and I would recommend even if you don't have littles.

Historic steam engine train that is a fun time. This area was minded up until 1951 for silver and this is a very pleasant stop thru the Rockies. Would recommend it to all. Have been here years ago, so I knew what to expect.

By Mary F |

This gorgeous railroad crosses a 100 foot high trestle. The ride between Georgetown and Silver Plume takes about an hour. There is an optional tour of the historic Lebanon Silver Mine at roughly the halfway point on the trip. An excellent way to get off the beaten track in Colorado! Highly recommend.

By Robert R |

The railroad ride is $27.50 per person and it says it lasts a little over an hour. However, they do not tell you that you spend more time waiting at 2 train stops than the ride itself. Extremely expensive for a nothing ride. The views can be seen for free any where in the Georgetown area.

By Jen S |

Our family enjoyed this train ride and learning more about the history of the area. It was worth the stop.

By mike |

My family took the Georgetown Loop Railroad trip in August 2020. Due to Covid 19, we were not allowed to select our seat and we were not able to sit in a covered car. This was a problem for my wife who prefers not to be in the Sun. The conductor did give us some historical information on the second half of the trip, but the narrative could have been much better and more informative.

By Ryan R |

My wife got us tickets for the Georgetown Loop Railroad along with the optional silver mine tour, and we had a great time. The highlight for us was definitely the train ride – it’s scenic, fun, and full of old-time charm. Riding through the mountains on a historic train was a unique experience, and we really enjoyed the views and the relaxing pace.

The mine tour was also interesting, and we learned a lot about the history of silver mining in the area. Just a heads-up – we went in May and it was in the low 40s inside the mine, so dress warm and wear good shoes!

The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and there’s some cool history behind the different trains and cars at the station. All in all, it was a fun and memorable outing that I’d recommend to anyone visiting the area.

Simply stunning scenery! Funny and great staff, well run, organized, on time and unique. Highly recommend for families

By SU |

This was our 2nd time and it was as fun as the first. Fantastic views and a beautiful day. This time we included the silver mine tour which was a really neat experience. It was captivating and enlightening learning about the miners of days past, what they experienced, the tools they used and the risks they took. Highly recommend. Wear comfortable shoes and a jacket...it's chilly!

By Tducey |

It is a very short ride that served the area gold mining industry. Altho the "conductors" were in period clothing and "told" the history enroute it was impossible to hear any of it (perhaps they need online recording you can listen to?) I was disappointed....do spend time in town looking at Victorian architecture still remaining and Copper Creek restaurant is very good! And perhaps if you paired it with panning for gold it would be more fun....but also more $$$$

By Bob Z |

What a wonderful experience. The history of railroad, why it was built, and to actually ride on the same track is incredible. And...the scenery is incredible.

By cathy k |

Fun, comfortable, informative and a beautiful route.
Line for tickets can be quite long so best to arrive a bit early to get in line.

By Kristl S |

I’d recommend this for anyone who can’t hike like kids and seniors. The scenery is beautiful, but if you hike…you’d see a lot more.

By George A |

The scenery was gorgeous and a perfect set-up for our trip up and through Guanella Pass. The guide gave just enough historical info peppered with corny jokes. Heaven for dads.

This attraction is especially great for guests with disabilities. My son uses a wheelchair and the staff were super friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend this.

By B Haven |

Riding the Georgetown Loop railroad is a must for any train enthusiast. We went as a family, which included our 2 year old. The experience was so much fun for our whole family. They offer photo souvenirs and our ride included characters dressed for the old west days. The crew who works the trains is friendly and informative. The loop ride was a little over an hour. We didn't do the mine experience since our son isn't old enough.

By KDove |

This was my second time on the train, and my first time on a tour. I thought our mine tour guide was excellent, and I would have enjoyed even more time in the mine, had that been an option. The train ride was beautiful, as usual. Could have done without the photo hustle (we are from Branson, so this felt a little too much like home). The conductor seemed to take himself a little too seriously and was annoying, and there seemed to be a LOT of tourist-trap/kiddie type activites around (at the Georgetown stop, and at the mine stop). We don't have kids, so luckily we were able to avoid that bit. I really enjoyed the things we DID do, and I'd recommend it. Start out from Silver Plume if you want a more grown-up atmosphere and some awesome pictures of the trains/tracks/depot.

By Bob4922 |

We wanted to take a train ride while in Colorado. This train is reasonably priced and takes you back into the mining history of the state. We took the train ride and the mining tour. Both were enjoyable!

By Chas E |

We were lucky to get the train with the old style engine. Beautiful scenery and interesting historical experience.

By DolomiteMerc |

We had a great experience here. The staff is extremely friendly here at the ticket counter, however, we had tried calling them earlier in the day and they seemed too busy to pick up. Make sure you book the ticket ahead of time online, and collect the physical ticket at the station. Their engines are close to 100 yrs old, and it is so much fun to ride the train even as an adult. Great view. I can imagine it would be even more beautiful in the snow/around christmas. We did not do the mining tour - you could combine it with the train ride if you have the time.

By Barbara D |

Was a very beautiful train ride. The railroad costumed staff was friendly and helpful with my husband who is blind. Nice wooded scenery with flowing creeks. They have open cars and cars with indoor seats the day we rode the glass/plexiglass was taken out except for the end windows. We had the car to ourselves due to the spacing of 6ft apart the train wasn't full.

By 190rayb |

My brothers and sisters decided to take this trip at Christmas and it was a great decision. Yes, it was very cold and snowing burt that made the trip that much more festive to enjoy. They had a chestnuts roasting on an open fire with free samples and you could buy hot chocolate or coffee while you waited to board the train. They had a tent with heaters where you could wait to board the train. Once aboard, they take orders for hot drinks which were complimentary and also had food and alcoholic drinks you could purchase. The big treat for us was Santa 'Claus! We're all parents and grandparents and we had no children with us, but Santa made the day by visiting with our group, taking pictures with us and posing with me as if scolding me for not being a "good boy." We had fun, the ride is about 45 minutes and if you take the train ride during the Christmas season, there are lights along the route. It was fun and I'd certainly recomment you check this out. Bring your kids and you'll enjloy the experience. There is also a gift shop where you can buy souveniors

On Tuesday, October 1, 2024, we visited the Georgetown Loop Railroad in Georgetown, Colorado. This is about an hour west of Denver on the I-70 with “Easy-off, Easy-on” access.

Parking, upon arrival was hectic and we sort of panicked. Within a few minutes the lot went from overflowing to 50% capacity – We had arrived as a previous train run had completed and those passengers were leaving. It is free parking.

The east facility is Devil’s Gate Station and has some informational information. This was also being set up Halloween and special train runs. On the train ride itself we also saw Christmas décor so check the railroad’s homepage for rides and special events.

The train runs you from the east, Devil’s Gate Station, west, to the Silver Plume Station. At Silver Plume you have about twenty minutes or so to visit a rail barn hosting several cars and exhibits and roam the area a bit while the 1926 Baldwin steamer, on our run, got water. Then, board again, and head back to Devil’s Gate.
The leaves were turning, it was in the low 70s with a light breeze so the weather was perfect.

Super ride, kid friendly, very informative narration along the path.
This is high elevation, 8,520 feet above sea level for Georgetown and Silver Plume is 9,118 feet above sea level. Water for hydration is highly recommended. For “lowlanders,” over exertion is easy.

A few spots for picnicking but somewhat limited.

Super visit, super train ride. If we are in the area again, will most likely spend the time again.

The town of Georgetown is small and in the video. Historic, with lots of markers around. The shops are mostly tourist paraphernalia stuff and we found two interesting, to us, items – a “Tea Rex” cup and a hand painted house made in Lithuania – my Wife is 50% Lithuanian. We had never seen that sort of stuff before.

Thanks for watching,
Rex

We really enjoyed this experience. We took the 10am ride and it was beautiful. Parking was easy, picking up our tickets was easy. All of the train workers were friendly. This isn’t really a loop, the train goes up and comes back down. The ride took about an hour. It was very pretty and my kids enjoyed it. The tickets were a little pricy, but what isn’t these days?

By angeleyes27 |

This little train goes as far as a little railroad station where you stop for about 15 minutes and then heads back. I thought it was cute. It's true that it travels the same track back and forth, but run along the highway, but to me, it is fun to experience the old trains and it's nice to see them preserved.

Me and my family took the Georgetown loop in July of 2019, and it was a great experience! There were spectacular views! The train was very open and there were cars for food. The train was 45 minutes long and went up and around a mountain. I highly recommend!

While visiting Denver, we took a ride on The Georgetown Loop Railroad. We rode the 6:30PM, Santa’s Lighted Forest Train. Check-in was fast and easy. The young lady issuing our tickets was very helpful and briefed us on “when and where”, and acquainted us with the facility. The train ride was approximately 1 hour and very scenic, riding through the woods and viewing all of the lights and decorations. We had a visit from Santa on the train. Santa interacted with everyone but especially the young children that were on the train ride. Santa was a big hit! Overall the train ride was worth doing and we enjoyed it. We recommend taking Santa’s Lighted Forest Train Ride!

By judy k |

even for a senior, this was a nice excursion.
interesting information as you ride across a trestle bridge and see beautiful views.
see more info- a mine shaft & other things are available to do

By Mark Clay M |

We love excursion trains, especially when steam is involved, which it was on our train. The train was sold out, and it's first come, first served, but we still got seats right behind the locomotive/tender, where we could hear everything working. The scenery was spectacular, with the look changing around every curve, of which there are many. The many crossings of Clear Creek are beautiful, but the views from the Loop Trestle were unbelievable! The stop at Sliver Plume leaves little time to check things out, but you can always drive back up after the ride. It's only a few miles. I have a YouTube channel and asked if I could go up in the locomotive and talk to crew about it. They did one better and had me ride the locomotive back to the bottom! How awesome!
There is also a gold mine tunnel tour. I passed, but the wife did it and said it was pretty neat. BRING A JACKET as the year round temperature inside is 44⁰F!.
The gift shop at the bottom is well stocked and priced as you would expect a tourist place to be.
This is a must do for railfans, youtubers, and people who just like cool stuff. It was worth every penny!

Recommended #1: purchasing tickets at home before you go; it was popular and filled quickly. People who showed up in person to buy tickets found that there wasn't room on the mine tour. We bought our train ride and mine tour passes about 3-4 weeks prior to our visit. If you just show up to purchase, there probably will be room to ride a train, but likely not room in the mining tour.

Recommended #2: If you are doing the mine tour, wear either tennis shoes, hiking boots, or sturdy sandals like TEVAs. The tour is not terribly rigorous but there is a little mud and some water and you will be glad for sturdy shoes.

We had a terrific time today at the Railroad and Panning/Mine Tour event. Rail trips currently originate from Devil's Gate park on the lower part of the loop. There is a cute ticket booth surrounded by charming little wooden house reproductions and good parking lot at the start of the trip. The originating 'station' was well-maintained and had decent restrooms. The boarding process was smooth and the waiting area was sheltered/shaded. The train cars were a nice mix of semi-indoor cars and fully outdoor cars; not too many of the spots were in full sun. The train trip was just the right amount of time in length; I have done the Durango, CO, narrow-gauge trip before and that took forever and children were bored on that Durango trip by the end. This one is just right for everyone, including the littles.

For those ADA persons: the trains had excellent ramps and looked like they could accommodate at least 3-4 wheelchairs with pretty stress-free loading.

For the mine tour: I am not in the best of shape, carry a few extra pounds, and hail from an elevation of about 4,700 feet, which is half of that of the mine. I was concerned about what the website called a rigorous hike to the mine. The mine was downhill from the train stop and not hard to accomplish. The mine tour itself was well-lit and the grade was easily climbable. for anyone 5'8" or taller, you will find that the mine ceilings are low in spots and may hit your required hardhat. I am 5'10" and hit my hardhat 4-5 times. The hike back up to the train was trickier. I was glad that I brought a hiking pole to aid in the climb. It certainly was a bit of a hike, but not bad and the distance wasn't too bad. I would recommend leaving the mine tour a little early to tackle the climb back up the hill to the train stop so that way you meet the return train on time.

Bottom line: this was a terrific tour and is likely amazing anytime of year. They offer trips in summer but also in Autumn for the foliage tour and a charming Christmas train tour. Worth the money.

By Robert P |

This is a fascinating place to visit. The train trip is short, but the views are incredible, particularly the high level bridge. Sitting in the parlor car eating the provided snacks was a fun experience and worth the extra cost.

By dragonflyfrisbee |

Great day trip from Denver. Went up for the day. The train was a fun ride. Our daughter wasn’t old enough for the mine tour but enjoyed the train. We took the Guanella pass out of Georgetown home for a different way back to Denver. The Sasquatch at the trains were a bit scary for young kids but we still had a good time. Definitely recommend for anyone that likes trains

By Laspafla |

This was a nice, non strenuous activity to experience some history and the outdoors. The cost $39 was reasonable.

By garbagecollector |

This is a GREAT way to experience a mountain train ride without having to spend hours and hours. We did Silverton to Durango once, which is a wonderful ride but it takes hours and it takes hours to get back to your car (return train, bus, or ...). We were with friends this time who had not been to Colorado before, so we wanted them to have at least a short train experience. Georgetown Railway fit the bill perfectly!

We went at 10am and it was sunny and cool. Beautiful ride in August.

By Dawn S. |

We booked the VIP/Presidential car Tahoe and the trip was so disappointing. We were boarded last, and were crammed into a very narrow seating area with a shelf, not at a table as advertised, and therefore we were not treated equally for the same price of $105!!. The snack consisted of one small plate to be shared between two people with 2 slices of apple, 4 grapes and a tiny portion of cheese and crackers, the snack is not per person, and not a VIP experience at all. The "Loop" is misleading - the ride lasted for about 20 mins, stopped, and then returned in reverse on the exact same route with the same views of trees, rocks and the interstate. It's not very scenic (I suggest driving the nearby Guanella Pass Scenic Byway instead). The staff were attentive and tried their best, but it's a really short and boring train ride, and not even on a steam train. I do not recommend this trip, it's definitely over priced and not worth the money.

Omg I can’t state enough how awesome the experience was! The train was great the snacks and people were excellent!

We took the Lebanon mine tour. We absolutely loved the train ride and the tour was so interesting. The water was up and the pictures I got were beautiful. Take the time to go into downtown Lebanon. The old Victorian homes are something to see. Beautiful area.

Right when we arrived, it began to snow. It was like being in a snow globe. This is an experience my wife and I will always remember. Highly recommend.

By World traveler |

This train ride is way over priced for what you get. We spent more time sitting then moving. They say the train ride is an hour but you are definitely not moving the whole time. They had some guy talking on the loud speaker the whole way back but could not understand a word he was saying. It was annoying and the trip would have been better if that was cut out. I would say SAVE your money and skip this!

By TheExplorer |

After all these years, you would think that they figured out a way to get their loudspeakers to be more legible. I thought maybe I was on a New York City subway, which is also notorious for not understanding what conductors are saying. Come on guys, work on your loud speakers. Figure it out.

By Mark L |

The train is very cool. It is a real steam engine, powered by fuel oil. Very scenic views on the train.

I also took the tour of the Lebanon Silver Mine, which is available at one of the train stops. The mine tour was great too, tough I was surprised the tour guide was not familiar with the Lebanon Mucka Mucka man, who is described in the Urban Dictionary.

By Noah S |

It’s a lot of money for a there and back (same route) trip but the scenery is nice. My complaint is that they clearly
oversell the number of seats. People are crammed like sardines and it’s hard to even take photographs. I really didn’t enjoy rubbing butts with the lady next to me and her kid kicking me. I thought the staff was great and I enjoyed the jokes (a la Jungle Cruise).

A fun ride along the rocky Colorado terrain in a cute steam engine. The train travels between Georgetown Depot and Silver Plume, a distance of around 3 miles by road through winding tracks. The scenery is beautiful, and the commentary accompanying the train ride is fun. We booked the train ride that starts from the Georgetown Depot. The depot has a gift shop, from where you can pick up tickets for the train ride and proceed on to the station. The round trip journey takes about 90 minutes, with a few minutes of stoppage at the Silver Plume station for refilling water in the steam engine. There are mine tours available along with the train ride but we did not opt for those.

A number of narrow gauge railway routes were built in the area because of a number of mining operations in the Rocky Mountains. To conquer the steep grade, the engineers devised a longer route with tall bridges and slow elevation gain so that a steam engine locomotive could haul people and freight. It is indeed a marvelous sight to see multiple bridges and horseshoe shaped curves, listening to the chugging of the steam engine. There is some incredible Colorado scenery the train rides through. I would highly recommend riding, at least for a short distance, on the open cars - it is fun! The relatively meandering pace of the train, coupled with the gorgeous mountainous terrain the train travels through, makes good opportunities for some stunning photographs!

While the train ride might certainly not satiate a thrill seeker, riding slowly along the beautiful mountains slowly in a steam train, while listen to the history of mining and railroads in the area, was a memorable experience.

By Ralph Testa |

short ride but worth the trip on this narrow gage steam engine. Its a round trip ride. Only 15 minutes at the stop at the top. Gift shop and gold mine tour.

By RVIDI |

I cannot wait to bring our grandson on this train ride. Do not get me wrong. This is an experience for all ages. What a beautiful, serine ride through the mountains. We happened to do it as the fall colors were starting to show.

Beautiful scenery, for sure. I also enjoyed the history and facts discussed as we made our way. The jokes weren't bad (well, yes they were but I think they are supposed to be) but the timing was off a little. Really, that is the only issue I have.

As the season gets cooler (and remember, you're in the mountains), dress appropriately. You very well may be out in the open.

Take time to get into Georgetown. If you do, carve out enough time to take this train ride. You will be happy you did.

My family (husband, teenage son, teenage daughter & I) went on the historic loop train with extended mine tour. The train was great - beautiful scenery. The mine tour was the big hit though.
Our guide (Josh, I think) did a FANTASTIC job on the mine tour! He was funny and SUPER knowledgeable! We learned so much - it was really fascinating. All of us were very intrigued the entire tour.
The mine is REALLY cold however. It's only about 45 degrees so thick soled shoes or hiking boots would be best to wear, as well as hoodie, sweatshirt or jacket.

By Richard N |

It's worth a visit. The ride up to Silver Plume and back takes an hour and a half. Some of the views are impressive and certainly the engineering of the building of the line itself is to be applauded.

There is plenty of parking available. As a couple of small negatives the commentary on the train couldn't be heard as in my view the speakers are in the wrong place and secondly don't try and communicate with this place by email as they won't reply. This day and age I expected better.

By LoveBoulderCO |

Friends from Morocco were in town for a visit and we took them here. We really enjoyed lunch in Georgetown before heading to the train and Leavett Mine tour. We all had such a good time! The train ride is not long but, in my opinion, it was long enough to feel that I got my monies worth.

By skd22 |

We had a party of 8 with ages 22-82 so we opted outof the mine tour. I think this would have made it a lot more fun. We sat in an open car with a covered tarp and glad we did as it poured about 1/2 way throught the ride. It is not a loop it is an out and back. The narration was easy to hear.

By FrequentFlier662217 |

This is a steam locomotive excursion train. I understand that at times, they may also run an additional train pulled by a diesel locomotive. A 1st class enclosed parlor car is one option, the coach section is 1st come seating, several cars open on the sides with a roof. There are also a couple completely open cars. Arriving at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled boarding time at a covered staging area will insure the best choice of seating in the coach section. Depending on wind and direction, we got a bit of smoke, but only briefly. They now use a Baldwin locomotive that burns recycled motor oil so there are no sparks or cinders. Cars near the front get the best effect of the whistle and engine sounds. At the other terminal, they move the engine to the opposite end as there is no room in the canyon to turn anything around and this is how they keep the engine on the front of the the train for the return. There is a terminal at Georgetown and the other is at Silver Plume. The train can be boarded at either end. There are optional mine tours where those will get off the train for the tour and then reboard a later train for the rest of the trip.

By Chris C |

Lebanon mine was about 15 minutes into the ride so you get your snacks after you come back from the mine tour. Take a jacket to the mine. The tour is about 40 minutes. Guides were informative and friendly. You get a good view of Devils Den Bridge from the Lebanon mine area. I paid for the enclosed car, but the AC wasn't working. Not always an issue but the sun was beating down through the windows and we were hot. Some windows opened, but you have to be seated in front of that window to take advantage of the breeze. We got a drink and some snacks including hummus, cheese, carrots and some crackers. Such a nice touch!! Also got cookies as we left the train.

By Banuwati |

This ride is value, a quick up and back ride. Pretty enough but when we reached the Silver Plume station, there was less than 10 minutes to visit the museum or bathroom.,.seriously. And you’re hawked at both ends …ugh.

By arlene h |

The location of the train is in a really small cute town. Easy to get to and a perfect location. There was a small shop and restrooms on the premises. We arrived about 30 min early and got good parking in the lot before the next group arrived. The choices for seating are nice on the train as it was first come basis.

By DebbieGMadison_CT |

We booked the parlor car in case the weather was bad. It wasn't but it was still great. They gave us snacks and drinks for free (can buy beer and wine). Lebanon mine tour was great (Jimbo was guide and was entertaining and informative). A great trip for families and solos.

We took the Loop & Everett mine tour we were able to do a search & find a 2 for 1 discount. We chose coach which is what all but 1 train car is. For the difference in price it is not worth the upgrade, especially for the length of the trip. For the best seat on the train from Georgetown seat on the side of the depot in the back open cars for the best views & pictures of the train in the curves. Even though it was extra add on, the Everett Mine tour was interesting and you do not go very far into the mine. It was fun learning to pan for gold and everyone get a little bag of sand with gold flakes in it. I was glad I brought my reading glass to see the gold flakes! After panning you are given hotdog, assortment of bag chips & lemonade or water before going into the mine. We learned how the mine where formed, various jobs the miners could do and what the pay was. Some jobs the miners had, such as drilling, came with a $.75 raise but also a life expectance was only 2 yrs. I think that the group size in the mine should have been smaller; we had 21 in our group which made it hard to hear and see while he was demonstrating the equipment. Also the gift shop had nothing on either of the 2 mines which would have been nice instead of the usual train gift shop merchandise.

If you like train rides you will love this one! Our family really enjoyed the trip through the mountains and we were lucky to see some pretty fall colors. If you want to take pictures of the engine be sure to sit towards the back so you can catch it going over the tall bridge. We were too close and it made it very hard to get pics. The loop goes to Silver Plume so you have a chance there to move to a different spot to get different pics. The conductor has lots of jokes and was very friendly. Keep your eyes open for extra sites on the ride - you never know what might show up. We also took the short mine tour and were glad we didn't opt for the longer tour. It is a chilly 40 degrees in the mine and our daughter was glad to get back to the warmth outside. You also pan for gold and get a small bottle of gold to take back with you if your panning skills are good. Hearing the history of the mine and train were interesting. Highly recommend this trip for all train lovers!

We rode the Georgetown Loop Historic Railroad on our way from Denver to the mountains. It was an awesome mid-point break, to get out and up close to the mountains on an exciting ride. My son is a train enthusiast, so he wanted to ride in the open car as close to the engine as possible. Specks of coal and steam blew our way on the ride more than once. It was a sunny day. I would recommend a hat or sunblock. The staff is great. The train goes over a cool trestle bridge. We didn't do the mine tours, but if we ride again we will. The train makes two stops on the loop. Bring your own snacks and water for the ride. I was able to take beautiful photos of the train and the mountains.

By 195barbe |

Steam engines were unique and fun, but the ride itself was pretty sterile. Maybe because we did this near the end of our trip, but it was not full of spectacular mountain views that I expected, or cheesy wild west experiences that would have been fun for the kids.

By Ann S |

Even though it rained we really enjoyed this tour. They were very well organized. The mine tour part of the trip was very interesting.

By tweetydeb |

My grandkids visiting from Texas had a fun time at the Georgetown Loop Railroad. The train and the ride were the highlights but they have other features on the site that they loved too.

By Gail L |

Utter waste of time. Overpriced, complete bait and switch. No scenery the only animals are the plastic tachy ones on the side.
Cheesy narrator. If it rains you are sitting outside in the rain.

By Cynthia A |

The views were beautiful, clear stream ran alongside tracks, lots of green trees and boulders. The open-- air cars gave us a nice breeze even though day was a little warm. The wooden bench seats got a little hard, but trip was not so long I was uncomfortable.

By Kevin P |

A very enjoyable afternoon with the train ride and mine tour. Exceptional tour guides and staff with wonderful, friendly attitudes. We will do this one sgain.

By David A |

I thought the train ride was very interesting and the view was great. the only complaint I had was the speaker system. I could not hear the speaker and what they where saying. DWA

By cindyNE |

This was such a fun experience--and an educational one! All of the staff were very friendly and knowledgeable not only about the Railroad but about the history of the area. I highly recommend you check this out!

By KfromOhio |

This was our second time to visit the Georgetown Loop Railroad. We live several states away but were back in the Denver area visiting family. This visit was the first day that they opened after the COVID closure. They handled all of the recommended restrictions well and it was a pleasant experience. Many attractions that we normal go to when visiting the area were still closed, but we were fortunate that this place had reopened. Definitely could recommend.

By Aaron T |

Took the Lebanon tour with josh m as my guide. and had a great time with friends learning the history and techniques of 19th century miners. The dry humor was great as the mine itself was quite damp. lol 42 degrees inside so bring a jacket with you for some comfort.

By alliebdive |

Please read my review of our trip under Georgetown Loop Railroad. Had a fantastic experience and the best mine tour with Sheri ever. Don't hesitate to do this trip

By Jennifer K |

Always a wonderful excursion. No matter the season don't forget a jacket, it's cold up there. And don't forget your camera!
The mine tour varies, sometimes it's fascinating, but sometimes the tour guide not up to par. It's a crap shoot, but worth the gamble.

By Billie Shaffer |

We have a jampacked Colorado vacation itinerary and a train ride was a must-do. The Georgetown Loop and mine tour was a perfect stop midway from the Denver airport to our first overnight in Granby. The staff and guides are welcoming and knowledgeable and it was just the right mix of education and fun for our 8- and 11-year-old grandkids. Lots of spectacular views along the way, too!

By Hiker01Cypress_CA |

If you like steam trains and great scenery, you will enjoy this. We certainly did.

We also took the mine tour, which was interesting. The kids enjoyed panning for gold.

This railroad is easy to get to. It's right on Interstate 70, about an hour west of Denver. Next time we go, we will budget a little extra time to explore the town of Georgetown. It is full of old Victorian homes/buildings.

By 123txfamilyof5 |

Neat experience if you’ve never been on a steam engine train before. Be sure to switch sides on the way back to get views from both angles. We did the extended Lebanon mine tour and really enjoyed it. I wish we had more time at the Silver Plume depot but had to catch the mine tour.

By Suz C |

Breathtaking views! This was one of my favorite attractions.

I booked our tickets about 6 weeks before we would travel. The day of our train ride there was a massive accident on 70. We tried taking mountain backroads to arrive. I knew we would not make our reserved time so I called and woke with Howard. He was very accommodating when I explained the situation. He moved us to the next train time and had our tickets waiting at will call.

I certainly recommend sitting on the RIGHT side as you head up the mountain. It has all the water views. They were very informative while we were on the train. You should certainly visit!

By Criquett E |

We took the train to the Lebanon Mine and did the extended tour of the mine. How interesting!!! This mine tour is easy for young and old. I can be a little claustrophobic but I wasn't bothered at all. It's chilly in the mine (44*) so wear a jacket. Also, the ground is wet so closed shoes work best. Our guide was excellent and gave us so much information. The staff on the train are in period dress and also narrate the trip as you go. Some have complained that if you sit in a car near the engine you will get some smoke and soot on you and this is true. We sat up front but the soot was minimal. It rained a little and yes, the train still runs if it is raining. We had a blast!

By Tracy w |

Fun steam engine train through the mountain. My 4 year old thought it was great. Recommend if you have young children.

By ebcheshire76 |

What a wonderful experience for our family! We had a teenager who was very skeptical regarding if she would have a good time or not, but she loved it! It’s a great length and there is absolutely beautiful scenery to take in. We paid extra for the cave and gold panning, and thought it was well done. Our guide was very knowledgeable and did a great job. I would definitely recommend this experience!

By UCFKnightsFan |

I did the Georgetown Loop Railroad today at 10:00 AM. Overall I enjoyed it. However, I think it may be a one and done type of thing for me. If I lived in the area it would be a bring relatives or friends type of place.

I was very impressed with the COVID-19 safety steps. Everyone was required to wear a mask and they seated everyone 6 feet apart unless you were together as a group.

I started at the Devil’s Gate station (elevation: 8,615). The train goes to the Silver Plume station (elevation: 9,178) and then back. It was just over an hour train ride. There are parts where it does run along the highway, but it really doesn’t distract you unless you let it. There are two types of train cars - one with a roof and one with no roof. They will assign you your seat. I happened to be in the train car without a roof and it was awesome.
It was a beautiful sunny day to take in the fresh mountain air.

The Front Range of the Rocky Mountains are very scenic. There was not much color due to foliage change yet, but it was still scenic nonetheless.

I definitely recommend doing this if you have not yet!

By BBrown_12 |

If you're a rail fan, don't miss riding the Georgetown Loop Railroad! If you're. not particularly a fan of rail history, don't miss riding the Georgetown Look Railroad! You'll be a fan of the experience either way. This is a fun experience for all ages.

What a wonderful train ride through the mountains . The train cars are open air, and the scenery is beautiful.
A great way to spend a day with family or friends .

It rained shortly after our trip started but it was fine. The mine tour is interesting. All employees are very good w people of all ages.

By Gypsywillow |

We really enjoyed this ride. Right from when we pulled up in the car park as we could see the steam loco on the ridge repositioning. The ticket office was a delight we a mixture of treasures to explore. This was a relaxed rip with lots of scenery. We had a beautiful morning.

By Lisa at Rove and Swig |

While the Durango-Silverton train seems much more popular, I think this 1 hour train ride is just perfect for groups with younger children. We booked the private caboose with cupola which leaves from Silver Plume (not Georgetown) and I felt was a great value and perfect length of time for our group of 8, including two children ages 3 and 5. I don't know the seating limit for the caboose, but it could have held at least 14 comfortably. The caboose is why I'm rating 5 stars. I think if we did general seating it would have left slightly less of an impression. You ride into Georgetown for a 15-minute stop and then ride back, so the word loop is a misnomer to me. There are scenic portions and also a very tall bridge to cross Clear Creek. My goodness, all of the staff looked the part of a 19th century train conductor - the long beards on the guys must be a requirement of employment!

By Freddy |

A nice ride with a scenic view. Great for families and kids. It’s a short ride though. If you are looking for longer rides consider exploring other options.

By Rick M |

We rode on the Santa train. It was awesome. The grand kids 1 1/2 and 10 years old. Don't miss it especially if you have little ones.

After traversing through Central Colorado on I-70 hundreds of times over the last 20 years, we decided to slow down and take in some of the sights during our recent trip. It is somewhat embarrassing to admit that we had NEVER before got off the interstate highway at the historic mining town of Silver Plume.

The dominant tourist attraction in the town is the historic Georgetown Loop Train Ride. This fascinating operation is based on the reconstructed narrow gauge rail line that ran between Silver Plume and Georgetown. The vintage passenger cars are pulled by authentic locomotives through the breathtaking Colorado Rockies and frequently provides the passengers with a view of bighorn sheep and deer on the journey. The cost is reasonable and special packages and theme trips are often available.

In our case, the decision to get off the highway at Silver Plume was impromptu. As luck would have it, the train was pulling away from the station as we walked up. Our schedule did not allow enough time to catch the next train, but was plenty of time to visit the wonderful museum. And it was FREE. The audio-visual presentation was fantastic and the displays were awesome. Time well spent.

We are already planning our next trip to Colorado, and we will make our reservations for the train well in advance. We are hoping to do a winter time theme to make the most of the holiday magic of the Rockies.

By kalynne s |

Was such an incredible experience to not only sight see but have an actual working train be able to take us up into these areas was so amazing!

By Barb34731 |

The only thing realistic and enjoyable is the train whistle and steam from the engine! Could not hear or understand conductor narrating - Old broken holiday decorations cover most of the mountains passed. Spent way too much time at a stop which included nothing more than a rest room and a gift shop. Way overpriced for a 40 minute train ride - Went on more realistic train rides at amusement parks!

By arkiekat2017 |

This is a real steam engine! It rained the day I went but most of the cars are covered so it was okay. I also took the extended Lebanon Mine tour. The train people let you know which stop to get off on for the tour. The extended tour took you into a side branch of the mine that is less touristy. Highly recommend adding the extended part on. There is a large hill to walk back up after the mine tour so make sure you pay attention to the time unless you are in really good shape and can run up it!

By Mark H |

Great views of the surrounding areas and excellent narrative on the train trip, Really great trip to bring the kids on.

By Lori S |

Nice ride on a beautiful day. They did space people out on the train due to the virus. Loved the outfits. We didn't do the mines due to a member with mobility issues.

By Cathie W |

We were on the Christmas Train on the Georgetown Loop Railroad. Santa was on the train with us and even the adults enjoyed the cookies and hot chocolate! It is well worth the price and the memories you make with your family will be priceless.

By Carol F |

Just got back from a delightful 10:00 train trip. Be sure to get tickets beforehand since it was sold out. Friendly staff, majestic scenery and information about the train and area as the train made the hour round trip. Plenty of parking and the price is?worth it.

By Cbcd |

The train trip is wonderful and the mine tour is well worth it.
I want to mention our tour guide Josh, who was incredibly knowledgeable and entertaining. I got the sense that the amount of stuff he knew about silver mining and local history was like a deep untapped lode.

By Court |

My husband and I took the Santa’s Lighted Forest train ride. We were disappointed - there weren’t a ton of lights, and the displays were very sparse. The guy taking photos on the train was rude. Save your money and spend it somewhere else that is more festive.

By Carrie U |

The parlor seats sell out quickly, so we had to book these seats a few weeks in advance. Our family of 4 did the train ride to the Everette mine, which included gold panning and a hot dog meal. The Everette mine tour was fairly short and you do not go very far into the mine. You can always see the exit and you do not make any turns or changes in level. The parlor train was very nice with tables and chairs. Parlor seats include a free delicious snack basket with cheeses, crackers, and fruit, as well as a free drink. There are a few windows that open in the parlor car. The scenery from the train is amazing and our entire family greatly enjoyed this activity. The train and mine tour took about 2 and a half hours total. We did the 1:00 ride in July and the weather was perfect!

By Steven c |

We booked online 2 tables online for nearly $250 and, unbeknownst to us, were given a different date than requested. When we understandably didn't show up, they refused to give us a refund OR even just an alternate date. Horrible customer service!!!!!

By donna k |

Nice train ride with spectacular views all around. The train moves slow enough to see what you want to see and we went also went to a mine. That was cool.

By Monabhi29 |

Beautiful scenery. We were there at the peak time first weekend of October so the weather was beautiful .we got the coach seating . The views are outstanding.

By PH2003 |

It's a bit hard to do this on a whim as it seems like tickets sell out pretty quickly, but we managed to get a table on the parlor car on our way back to Denver. It is just before Thanksgiving, but the Georgetown Loop is already decked out for Christmas with music, lights, candy canes, and even Santa on the train cars.
We had a fun time sitting and looking at the view from the train. You get complimentary snacks in the parlor car and can get non-alcoholic or alcoholic drinks on the train for $2-10. The only downside is there's no narration from anyone about what you're riding past and the Silver Plume train station isn't open for you to get out and look at, but overall I had fun. I think the Christmas stuff is geared more towards kids, but us as two childless adults still managed to have a good time.
Downtown Georgetown is also a really fun area to drive around. The shops are cute and the houses are really neat to look at. It's easy to get to from Denver too. Only takes about an hour if traffic is moving, maybe less.

By Amy L |

We had a great time! Tess was amazing as our tour guide. We did the train ride, panned for gold, and the mine tour. The view on the train ride was beautiful. I would definitely do this again.

By Been There Done That |

Beautiful views and lots of fun. I recommend sitting outside so you can see all the view. Gets hot sitting in the sun when stopping at the next depot. They said the train would stop for 10 minutes. It stopped for about 30 minutes. We didn’t get off, but wished we had. We would of if we had known it was going to be that long. Everyone was very friendly. We had an issue and the manager was very friendly and took care of our issue. Highly recommend.

By Peter88888888 |

We had an hour to spare whilst driving through the Rockies and went on this old steam train. Staff enthusiastic but not particularly warm, sometimes a little officious. Open and covered carriages so you can choose. A gentle trundle through some nice countryside including crossing a high bridge. It all seemed safe. There is a mine that you can visit (we couldn’t because we got the last train of the day: go early if you want to include the mine). We felt that the trip needed some more activity: there is a short stop at halfway but only time to visit the gift shop and the restrooms. A pleasant if not very exciting experience.

By NLS222 |

My family of 5 (children ages 13, 10 and 8) took the train from Silver Plume and did the Lebanon Mine tour with gold panning. We had coach tickets, so we rode in an open air car. The staff was very nice and knowledgeable. The conductor had lots of interesting things to say during the train ride. We had fun learning how to pan for gold and our tiny vials with our "found" gold made neat souvenirs.
Everyone had to wear hard hats for the mine tour. It was amazing to me how the temperature dropped almost immediately when you stepped into the mine. Wearing a sweatshirt or light jacket is probably a good idea for the mine tours.
When we boarded the train for the return trip to Silver Plume, we sat in the first car. My kids and husband enjoyed watching the engine get hooked up to the train. We did get hit with some kind of soot or ash during the return trip, but our clothes didn't get ruined or even noticeably dirty.
I felt like the train ride got to be a little too long on the way back, but I did enjoy the scenery.
We did purchase the $20 souvenir photo package. The package included a 5x7 photo and two photo keychains. Normally, we wouldn't buy something like this, but the photo turned out nicely (which is not generally the case) and $20 didn't feel outrageous to us.
Overall, we had a really good time and was a good activity for our family vacation.

By DMunsey |

Great experience riding a steam train. The ride was informative and beautiful with nice scenery. We also did the Silver mine tour, it was very interesting. It was very interesting to hear about the early days of mining silver.

By Michigan0718 |

What a neat tour. We did the mining tour as well, reasonably priced for a 3 hour trip. Kids had a great time planning for golf and learning about the mine. We did the parlor car where we got drinks and snacks complimentary with our tickets. Beer was $5 and they had some local ones. Service was great- we would do it again.

By Raquel |

A must see if you’re ever in Colorado! Perfect for a family outing. We went to catch the leaves changing and the timing was perfect! The ride was smooth and had breathtaking views. Deep enough in the mountains where you can get the best views yet not a far drive from Denver. We went for the Pumpkin Fest and the staff was so warm and welcoming from start to finish. Also, Mark was amazing! I’m so looking forward to coming back!

By Josh F |

Not only did they leave us behind after saying they would wait for us after only 3 minutes and we had to wait for the next tour, this was a huge waste of money and time. No one on the train looked entertained. You could barely even hear the tour guide over the noise of the train car. To top it all of it’s pulled by a modern Diesel engine, not a steam engine like all of the advertisements. I wish I could give this place a 0/5, it’s a misleading “experience.” Do not give these guys your money.

By Alex NC |

The views were good but I was disappointed. First of all, the seats are positioned poorly and you have a hard time being able to look out of the train car. Secondly, there was no narration on the ride so we did not get any historical facts about the railroad or the area’s history. Besides those issues, the railroad was pretty fun for the kids and they were greeted by santa. I would recommend this attraction to families with young children who care less about history and more about the festive atmosphere.

By cbg326 |

What a fun and memorable experience! Fall color in the aspen were glorious and the steam engine sound is so fun. The staff are very friendly and considerate of both young and old. Would highly revommend

By StephanieHCO |

I took my grandmother for the Christmas train ride. She uses a walker and the staff was wonderful in regards to her walker and mobility. The snacks were very nice, and the variety of beverages available was many. The train ride itself wasn't extremely interesting, but definitely a great overall experience!

By Vicky |

We rode the train on opening day of the season. Beautiful, scenic, snowy tour through the mountains. Staff was all so friendly and I enjoyed hearing the history of the mining era and saw some old train cars along the way. We also saw some big horned sheep on the mountains above I-70 which was cool! It was a great way to spend an hour. Spectacular views from the tall bridge going over the creek and a bit scary if you're afraid of heights! I thought we would do an actual loop but it's not, it's the same route back and you do see a lot of I-70 along the route but all in all it was a fun experience!

By Swimmerfly |

What a wonderful Mothers' Day gift this was. Our son and his girlfriend surprised us with this unique experience. The weather cooperated and we were treated to gorgeous panoramic views of the Rockies as we wound around the RR track. At the end of the ride, all mothers were treated to a red rose and a box of 4 mini chocolates! A five star+ to the Georgetown loop AND our family for a highlight adventure!!

This is a beautiful train ride. While there were mainly families with young children, me and my adult children thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It's a fairly easy drive from Denver and a fun way to spend an afternoon. The town of Georgetown is also a quaint place worth stopping.

By Michelle S |

This was so much fun for adults and teens. Get there about 30 minutes early to start lining up. Seats are first come first serve. Some cars have roofs and some do not. The train goes at a slow speed so you’re able to take in the scenery. Also just FYI, it does not go in a loop. When you arrive at the Steamboat Springs depot the engine car just moved to the back and you go back down the same path. You get off if you want for 15 minutes at this depot so you could switch sides to the other side of the train for different views. I would do this again! You can bring your own water and snacks on board.

We came up to ride the train last year and it was wonderful. This year was a totally different
experience, several of the employees were very rude, particularly an employee who’s name starts with a Ch.The Speakers on the train were so loud and you couldn’t understand a word that the guy was saying. It would be much better to just enjoy the ride in quiet. A word of advice to people that plan to take the train, don’t sit in a car with speakers over your head. My ears are still ringing.

Great trip on the train ride and the mine tour. Staff was friendly and efficient. Very scenic ride and interesting mine trip.

Georgetown Loop Railroad is a relaxing, fun outing for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. The train is covered but has open sides for great 360-degree views of the mountains above and Clear Creek below. The conductor provides history of the railroad during the ride, which runs between Georgetown and Silver Plume. It’s about 25 minutes one-way, with a 15 minute stop between stations. Every moment is a photo op. Our family loved it. I highly recommend this railroad trip when visiting Georgetown!

By David T |

Great train ride with the mine tour. Weather was perfect. I suggest that you arrive 45 minutes before your departure, as they started lining us up about 30 minutes before boarding.
Also for the best views on the ride, try and fit on the right side of the car. You’ll get to see some great views going up and then you’ll see the other side going back down. We tickets for the first trip up, so the parking lot was empty. Not the same leaving 2 hours later. Also suggest buying snacks in town as the selection they have at the shops is not great and the prices are higher as well. Mine tour was great especially on a hot day. Not great for tall people over 5’6”. Lucky they give you hard hats.

By Kelli J |

We had a absolute blast on the train with all the jokes and history. We also did the hr silver mine tour with John David, he made the tour a historic and fun. He knew his info.

By Anita L |

We had a very nice time. Wonderful little narrow gauge railroad. Many reviews said they could not hear the intercom speakers but we were in a open car and had no problem at all.Very nice people many dressed in period attire.Real steam engine was great!

By mpicchioldi |

Parking was the first issue. Not enough parking at the train station. They make the overflow park on a dead end road. We were at least 3 blocks from the depot. Once onboard it was very nice. We had the extended mine tour also. The description did not tell of the long walk on uneven dirt road, just to get to the mine entrance. Once back onboard the train we were provided a nice snack in the parlor car and drinks were offered.

Kudos to this company! Took the train ride and mining tour which was lead by Josh. What a wonderful and knowledgeable young man. Very impressed with his knowledge and the organization of our entire tour. Highly recommend!

We did the Christmas light train at 8:00 pm about 10 days before Christmas and really enjoyed it - thousands of Christmas lights along the 1-hour trip. Snacks were served free of charge in the Parlor Car class. Some drinks were free, and others had a charge for them. The service was very good.

By Carol and Ray L |

We loved this train ride. It was beautiful weather and the scenery was lovely. We found this activity by seeing the signs when we were in Georgetown and even at the last minute we were able to get a ride. The parking lot was very full but they said we could park along the road. This would also be a fun activity to do with children.

Best way to be “in the mountains” without hiking! It was a good way to kill 1.5 hrs of your time. Its a cool little family activity when youre around or in georgetown

First, no choice on trip advisor for Family (all adults) which we were as a party of 8. Had out of town guests, 2 elderly, 1 handicapped. While looking at the railroad website, based on description, chose what I thought would be the most comfortable car, it was called Presidential after all and looked nice for the additional cost and service. It would have been great had 8 of us had not been crammed in 2 tables. Other couples had there own table. 8 legs (one person 6'4") do not fit comfortably under that tiny table. The bench seat with stationary outer arm left no choice but to press against each other intimately. Handicapped and elderly NOT helped on board despite adding it to my notes on the reservation. Each table had a plate of snacks and later dessert. 4 person tables received same amount of food as 2 and were only given 2 sets of plasticware. This made it obvious that the tables were meant for 2. The parlor car has dining room-type chairs so if you have a large group and want to enjoy the ride comfortably, do not select the presidential car unless you want to travel like sardines in a can. As for the view, the train does not travel in a loop. Each side sees the same view coming and going. The train stops at the top near the highway for 25 minutes so the moving time of the train up and back is not actually that long, maybe 20 up and 20 back if that. But since I had to sit on the arm of the chair instead of the seat, it felt like forever. There was no room for me to sit since my hubby was the handicapped one and could not press against window or stationary arm due to his injury. Suggestion for Georgetown Railroad website: state that larger parties may be seated 4 to a table and that seat bench is smaller than two chairs. Or do not call it the Presidential car because that is perceived as "better" than the other cars and not everyone that paid the same price is treated equally.

Spending the day in Georgetown this was next to the last thing we planned to do. The staff were friendly. There’s a gift shop and restrooms while you’re waiting. The ride is about an hour long. After about 20-30 min the train stopped for about 10 minutes for anyone that need to go to the restroom or want to go to the gift shop or the train museum.
The things I didn’t like we were seated on benches facing each other. I believe I understand why nevertheless I’m not a fan. You have to do a lot of turning to get pictures. I could hardly hear what they were saying over the speakers because the train and people were loud. The scenery didn’t wow me.
Nevertheless I’m glad we went. Just so I can say I took a train ride in the mountains.

Seeing the steam locomotive and Hearing the train whistles enlightens the imagination of what life was like back in the early 1800s.

This was a very unique experience to do with the family. If you need a break from hiking then this is it. The train ride is very relaxing. The open air cars are nice and the scenery was great. If you ride the railroad, then I recommend also doing the silver mine tour. It was very interesting! The guides were very knowledgeable and funny. The tour takes you very deep inside the mountain and you can feel what it must have been like to work in the silver mine (a very difficult job). It was nice and chilly in the mine. As an added bonus, you get to pan for gold and get to keep what gold you find (everyone will find some). It is a nice souvenir to take home with you. Overall, I highly recommend the Georgetown Loop Railroad and Silver Mine Tour.

By X3594UCjackk |

The ride was very enjoyable because of the constant and often humorous commentary of the conductor. jacket needed since can be very cool. Noted some people also wore gloves. The ride is up and along a canyon and does stop at a mine. Only did the train ride, because the mine can be steep and old legs might not be comfortable. Very kid friendly.
Nice views and pictures of the engine going up and down the canyon.
Very enjoyable.

By Leslie J |

We had a great time on a sunny afternoon on the Georgetown Loop Railroad. The ride is very scenic and entertaining, with a real steam locomotive. The narration gives you great information on mining, the railroad and the area. Beautiful views! Tip— sit on the right side of the train for lots of views of Clear Creek. One stop includes an optional mine tour (which we did not do) but some folks who had just completed it said it was very good.

By Claudia H |

The Railroad trip is not long -- about an hour with 2 short stops. It goes through beautiful mountain country and they tell you all about the history.

There are 2 types of cars -- coach I think it is and Parlor. The coach cars are PACKED during tourist time! Some, not all, have some type of covering ... roof or canvas. All are open air and bench seating.

If you travel Parlor you travel with complementary snacks and a soft drink or water. It's certainly pricier but you get a real railroad car, completely restored and windows -- some open, some fixed. I'd highly recommend the Parlor car as the altitude is about 8500 feet and that sun is HOT!

Took the entire family with kids (adult) and grand kids on a Sunday. COVID made everyone space out and wear masks. The hour long ride had a narrator give interesting facts about the railroad and history along with railway time lines and statistics

By RobertSuzanne |

A fun 3 mile train ride, where Engine 111, a steam powered locomotive, takes you through the mountain pass, along a winding track to see steep canyons and mountain peaks all around. The scenery is beautiful all the way there and back. Arriving in Silver Plume from Georgetown, the engine is filled with 500 gallons of water, needed for it to make the return trip. The round trip journey takes about 90 minutes if you don’t disembark for the mine tour. We chose the tour that added the Lebanon Mine Tour. It takes you about 1,000 ft into Leavenworth Mountain and the guide explains all about this once operational silver mine. Good place to learn about mining in Colorado as well as train history in the area.

By Kirbyk |

I’m not sure when they offer the steam engine but it’s not quite the same with a diesel locomotive. The scenery is spectacular and the staff person who describes the history of the railroad was excellent. The price was very reasonable for the experience offered.

By SunshineGA |

We rode the loop from Silver Plume to Georgetown and back. The scenery was beautiful, the narration from the conductor interesting. We didn't get to do the mine tour (for a variety of reasons that were our own), but the train alone was lovely. There's an opportunity for a family photo (which we bought), but it was low pressure. Highly recommend.

By Maria G |

A beautiful day with a fun train ride, an exceptional Extended Tour mine with our fun and knowledgeable tour guide Lorena made for a spectacular Sunday with family!!! Thanks for a great time!! We will be back!! :)

By Yianni A |

We did the train ride and Lebanon mine tour. The train ride was very scenic and makes you feel like you're in the late 1800's. The mine tour was also very cool with a ton of artifacts and stories. You go pretty deep into the silver mine and get to see where the miners followed the silver veins on each side. The only negative to this trip was that one of the conductors was visibly drunk on the train, stumbling around with slurred speech. Other than that, I would recommend this beautiful train ride to anyone visiting Colorado.

By K Kranzley |

Combining this beautiful train ride with an awesome silver mine tour... can't be beat for youngsters and oldsters! We have taken several train rides, including the Silverton Durango. Our conductor on the train shared really interesting facts along the way, and the magic of the train itself and that long whistle blowing made a great experience. It is a really good tour, particularly if you don't have a lot of time and want to limit expense. This train ride captures the history and atmosphere of the Old West. Super!

By Louis F |

We went for the Christmas train experience and our 4 year old loved it. It isn’t an actual loop but an out and back train ride that lasts about an hour. Go at night when all the Christmas lights are visible.

By stijntailly |

There are a number of nice railroads to ride in the great State of Colorado and while the Durango an Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is probably the most famous and spectacular of them (I'm only supposing here, I haven't actually ridden this one), the Georgetown Loop Railroad may well be considered an easier and shorter introduction. You can catch the train in either Georgetown, as we did, or in neighboring Silver Plume. And even though both places are just about a mile apart on Interstate 70, it will take about a half hour by train and will require the train to conquer a pretty steep grade. To do so, engineers devised a corkscrew bridge, which they nicknamed the Devil's Gate High Bridge. It will undoubtedly be the highlight of most people's visits. You can choose to sit in coach or first class, but with decent weather, I would probably recommend an open coach box car as it will allow you to see more. Additional options to take a mine tour halfway are available. Though spectacular mountain vistas are yours, most of the tracks run along I-70, spoiling some of the fun. Departing from Georgetown, we were let off in Silver Plume with just enough time to stretch our legs. Tickets, considering the fact that you get to ride for just over an hour, are as steep as the grades that the train navigates.

By Songbird865 |

I recommend the parlor car for your ride especially in the fall when it is cool. Reserved seating at a table and includes snacks and non alcoholic beverages. Not much time at Silver Plume stop to take pictures and read the plaques. The museum there not open. Narrator and our cars attendant were excellent.

By LEGBS |

Our conductor, was a wealth of information on the history of this railroad and town. I agree with other reviews that the sound system could be improved on. But questions and conversations could be shared with the conductor. The ride itself was a relaxing and fun steam train ride. Scenery was breathtaking. The ride is about 1.5-2 hours. We did not do the mine but if you do, perhaps tack on some extra time.

By pfefmeister |

We sat in an open car on a beautiful blue sky day - the steam engine doesn’t emit smoke like burning coal or diesel. Many families onboard with delighted kids of all ages squealing with excitement. Watch out for live Sasquatch along the rails! Not a bad couple of hours chugging up the mountain to the Mines and vistas.

By Bcivilized |

My wife and I enjoyed the train ride but inclusion of the mine tour made the trip worth while. The train is interesting but the ride is short. The mine is very interesting and informative and a must-see as long as you are there.

By Cassbella |

I’m glad we purchased the Mine tour with our train ticket this was the highlight! The train ride was just ok not anything too special.

We departed from Georgetown depot, get in line early if you want one of the seats that have windows to get out from the cold /wind. It’s about 15 mins from there to Silver depot where you get off if you want for 15 mins to go to the restroom or see a small museum with older trains. Also a small gift shop is there. From there you load the train and head to the mine. If you stay on the train (not doing the mine tour) you go back to Georgetown depot.

The mine was very interesting and our guide was very knowledgeable. They put you in small groups. We started with hands on gold mining then headed to a couple of educational buildings where our guide shared the history of mining. From there we headed into the mine.
There wasn’t any steep areas it’s pretty flat. There is gravel and some wet areas due to dampness inside.

Leaving the mine you walk up a hill to reach the train that takes you back to Georgetown.

Overall I would recommend for the mine tour plus train. I’m not sure I would do this for the train only because it’s not that long of a ride and you see I-70 quite a bit on the tour.

I couldn’t hear the narrator even on the way back from the mine I sit in the train car where the narrator was at and could barely hear, they do need a better sound system.

We did the Santa Train with a 3 and 6 year old and it was amazing, Santa was great with the kids and adults and the views were great as well. We would do this trip again and it was well worth the money.

We wanted to give the ground time to dry for hiking since it had rained many days. We found this railroad tour and drove to the ticket office arriving 5 min before it departed. We scored our spots and enjoyed the tour so much! Absolutely gorgeous scenery. Great family time together.

We had several guests from out of town we took for the train ride. We all enjoyed ourselves and I would take my guests again. The staff was friendly and helpful from getting our tickets to our servers during the ride! The basket of snacks was a nice touch. The scenery was breathtaking! We enjoyed the narrated historical facts along the way! After the ride we were taking different small group pictures and one of the gentlemen came up and offered to take our full group picture. A definite must-see when visiting the Rocky Mountains!

I lived in Colorado in the 90's and drove by this probably 100 times but never went. My daughter and I decided to do it when we were visiting and I am glad we did! Super fun! pretty views and the staff seemed to be having fun too!

This is really for young children and train enthusiasts.
The experience was OK for a lay person such as myself. I would have preferred my time hiking.

By Kelly B |

I bought the tickets that included the extended Lebanon mine tour. There’s also a shorter mine tour that includes gem mining in wooden tables.

We arrived at 9:20 a.m. for our 10 train ride. I definitely recommend getting there early if you want your choice of seats: we got to sit in the open air car, which is exactly what we wanted.

The train goes over the big bridge (probably the neatest part), and then makes it’s way to the Silver Plume station. This takes about thirty minutes. At Silver Plume, you have the option to get off and use the restroom. I would recommend staying on (which is what we did) if you want to keep your seats. It’s about a twelve minute stop.

Next, the train starts back to Georgetown. It stops along the way at the mine camp, and anyone who booked the mine tours gets off here. The extended tour was really good. We went further in than I had expected. Note that the light is low inside. Also, there’s a pretty steep incline to get back up to the station. I was huffing and puffing. Our tour took about an hour and ten minutes.

After the mine tour, you walk back up to the station. The train stops, and you get back on to ride back to Georgetown.

By Joe S |

Overall an okay experience but not spectacular. Train cars fog up so that you do not get a clear view of the lights. The amount of lights is not very large. Most are far off in the distance away from the tracks.

However, the Santa that came through the car and visited with every child was in no rush.

Money might be better spent on other Christmas experiences. A little pricey for the one hour ride.

By Elliott Y |

We came to visit the Georgetown Loop back in May. I hadn't paid the attraction too much attention, but in retrospect that was an error on my part. This attraction offers really good views of the valley and mountains. Plus you get a fantastic view of the over-and-under loop that gives the railroad its name. Depending on what tickets you get you also get a tour of the old mines, also really cool. And of course the staff were great. I can only mention that if you decide to do the mine tours, you may want to be ready for a mild hike up and downhill, but nothing severe. I recommend this attraction for anyone who is into trains, mining, or in my case both.

By granof03 |

This is a pleasant train ride with some pretty scenery. It is a steam engine that makes a loop. It is a nice ride for children. We had trouble hearing the information that was being told on the ride but we did get a couple of facts that we found interesting.

By Karen U |

I had always wanted to go on the Georgetown Loop because of the scenic views. It definitely didn't disappoint! The views were amazing! I believe the highest elevation while on the tour was 9200 feet. Got great pictures from even in one of the inside train cars. They doing social distancing so book your tickets fast. We bought our tickets at 9:30 am and the next available time was 1 pm. Great for the kids too.

By Karen H |

A few days ago, my husband and I had the pleasure of taking the afternoon Georgetown Loop ride. The scenery is gorgeous and they history behind the train was very interesting.

We look forward to visiting again, especially when we have my step-kids with us next summer.

I would recommend getting tickets in advance, as all of the trains were sold out on the day we visited. This is especially recommended as capacity is limited due to Covid restrictions.

Speaking of covid restrictions. I felt mostly safe, as a majority of guests wore masks per our state mandate. Several announcements were made as to enforce the mask requirement, however, we were seated near a family who were joking about the masks and would not wear them. Employees allowed them to board and no one asked them directly to put on a mask, even though about five different employees walked right passed them, both while in the queue waiting to board and during the train ride. I realize with the heated nature of masks vs anti-masks, that it puts employees in a difficult position to be enforcers of the policy, yet we were disappointed that no one said a word to them. We were not the only guests who were upset that this family was flaunting the rules. It made the ride less enjoyable as everyone was glaring at this family and frustrated.

Other than the covid-safety issue, the employees were very welcoming and informative.

The Georgetown Loop Train doesn't go in a circle as you would think the name implies. It actually spirals between its two stations (Silver Plume and Georgetown Devil’s Gate) to stretch out the distance from 2 miles to 4.5 miles to decrease the steep grade. There is just one stop for the mine tours when it travels from Silver Plume to Georgetown. The round trip train ride alone is about 1 hr 15 min and about 25 min of that is spent waiting in the opposite station where you can get off and look around. The trains are stored in Silver Plume and Georgetown has a gift shop. In the Summer, both stations are open, but in the Winter you can only board at Georgetown. If you add in a mine tour, expect about 2.5 hours. Ours ran 2 hr 45 min. We were there in the Summer and choose an open car with a canvas tent roof. It was very enjoyable. Both sides offer nice views and it doesn't matter where you sit, you can see everything. Booking in advance is recommended especially if you plan to do a a mine tour.

There are three mine tours available. There are two tours of the Lebanon Mine in which you go in quite (500' and 900'). We took the Evert Mine Tour which included a lunch of Hotdog, Chips and Lemonade plus you get to pan for gold and everyone goes home with gold! The tour is very informative and great for kids. They simulate you going down a mine shaft and give a lot of history of what is was like to be a miner back then. You don't really descend but you do walk about 100-200 feet straight back into the mine. It was very enjoyable.

By Diane T |

The train ride was a fun experience, it was impossible to hear what the guide were saying on the train though. We added the mining tour and I'm so glad we did. The mining tour was exceptional...we had a great guide that knew her mining history. she spoke loud and clear and made sure everyone was around her before she started speaking so we could all hear her.

We had a terrific day traveling from Steamboat Springs to take the scenic tour on the Georgetown Loop. Very picturesque and the staff couldn’t have been nicer!

By Derek I |

I would have rated the train ride higher, but the front steer was extremely rude. We arrived 10 minutes before the train was ready to depart, and they refused to sell us tickets. We came back on a later date, and the photographer was extremely rude. We declined to have our photos taken, but he said this is how I make my living. And when we walked by made rude comments. However, the train ride itself was pleasant, we did not start stop for the tour. Gave very nice views of the valley. Would not make a special trip for the railroad but if you’re in the area worth doing.

My extended family of eight adults and three children took the afternoon Santa Christmas train in the Tahoe Presidential train car. We arrived at the train station about 45 minutes before the train was scheduled to leave. We were able to park in the depot parking lot. After the lot fills up, cars park down the train depot road. We picked up paper tickets in the train depot and store. Free hot chocolate and cookies along with roasted chestnut samples were outside the store. We waited in the heated tent in the line designated for our car. The conductor directed us to start loading and another staff told us where our tables were located. Very nice so all of us could sit together. Santa was wonderful with the kids and led a fun sing-a-long. Service was great with everyone getting a small cheese and fruit plate and either a soft drink or alcoholic beverage. Additional drinks can be purchased (cash or card). We had plenty of room and didn’t feel rushed or crowded. The route took about 50 minutes (we were late leaving so this is just an estimate). The kids all received a bell and a candy cane. Adults just get the candy cane. They did have a photographer on board who offered 2 pictures with remembrance frames for $20. With so many people, it was nice to have a great photo to remember our day. We had a wonderful time and would highly recommend the experience, especially to families with young children.

Fun train ride with some history (and puns) tossed in. This is a narrow-gauge railroad that was used during the mining heyday of Georgetown.

By Noel |

So this incident took place Oct 20th 350pm silver plum train. The host not sure what the gentleman name was very rude and unprofessional to me. I decided to take my husband on this train ride because I heard positive things. I did enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery along w the fall colors as I'm from a place I don't get to see this. I felt very stupid as how I was talked to and I don't appreciate that. Don't come to this place the royal gorge route would be your best bet and worth the money.

By AmbyrLynne |

I've been on this train quite a few times as a kid and loved it so I thought it was a great opportunity to take my life to it. Ages are 6,4 and 1. It was just OK. The prices were expensive which I understand it's a historic train and upkeep is rough. The staff was friendly. We went for a table in an enclosed car during their fall leaves special run where you got a box of snacks and a drink included (for the price absolutely should). It might have been better if we could have heard the speaker but the cabin was way too loud. Honestly I prefer the 1800s train in keystone SD or Silverton over this one but it was worth doing once.

By Termite42 |

The train ride was fun and interesting, sometimes it gets pretty busy, but that is why, because it is a nice ride in the mountains. Make sure you go on the mine tour, it is an extra cost but well worth it. Bring a jacket because it is cool inside the mine. You will be happy that you went. The children well love it!

By Elsie M |

We rode the railroad and enjoyed the trip. Narration was informative. Scenery was neat. We took many pictures. It was interesting how the switchbacks and loop made it possible to gain the altitude necessary to get from one end to the other without excessive grades.

By Benjamin V |

Had a great time on our visit with an 18 month old. Staff went above and beyond. It started raining as we were boarding and one staff member went and got an umbrella and took us to the train so the little one wouldn't get wet. Great views, nice narration, and we actually enjoyed having all the cars be open-air. Everything was well-maintained and a lot of care obviously goes into this operation.

By Ashley |

My kids had a great time on this train ride. We flew into Denver from Houston and stopped here on our way to Breckenridge. It was a great way to introduce them to Colorado. The views were amazing and they loved sitting in the open air train cars!

By Natalie B |

Had a good time on the railroad today. Weather was nice, open cars offered a cool breeze. On the train for 55 minutes (out and back loop). Family friendly. Good price

By Busboy19 |

I believe this experience is a little overpriced for what you get. There's a bridge in the beginning that is cool to go over but other than that there isn't a ton to scenery. The train goes 30 minutes out and then 30 minutes back on the same path. The frozen river is pretty but view of the highway is kind of ugly. Santa was friendly and took his time with the kids to take pictures. Cute gift shop and some fun bells and cookies were given to kids. The train is well kept.

Visited this attraction in mid September 2019 and found the entire thing to be a great way to spend three hours on a sunny afternoon. I had three adults and two tweens with us and we all had an awesome time.

We visited the train museum on the Silver side and the authentic “first class car” was really cool. It would’ve been cooler if we could’ve wandered in to but we completely understood why that wasn’t going to happen.

They offered some cool grain memorabilia in the gift shop and my kids enjoyed that area as well.

We took the Everest mine tour which honestly would have been boring ,if it wasn’t for Anna, the awesome tour guide! She was friendly and engaging and had a great sense of story telling and history. Impressive. The free hot dog and lemonade was unexpected too!

I read some other reviews where they said the scenery was boring blah blah blah. We thought the scenery was awesome and hailing from the Midwest any terrain over 30 Feet tall is considered awe inspiring!

The ride was cool and we had an awesome afternoon with the Georgetown Loop. Thank you for a great time!

The weather in Colorado during our 4 day trip turned from sunny and warm to cold and snow so we changed plans and decided`to let the train take the strain. Just missed the 11.30 am but that was fine we explored Georgetown where we found a store still being run by lady who inherited it from her great grandparents. So having purchased lunch there we boarded the 1pm ride. Lots of steam, hooting and bells ringing as train ascends the 600 feet to next and last station. We sat in middle carriage, which enabled views in all directions. Autumn colours. Uses 500 galloons of water each journey. Even my wife liked it. We have done loop railways in Norway and Australia. This was more fun .

Never ones to pass up a good train ride, we stopped at this narrow gauge railroad just off 1-70 in Colorado, made short work of the very nice collection of souvenirs at the gift shop while awaiting the next train, and were delighted to see a great old Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive just coming down from the new Devil's Gate high bridge to discharge the last passengers and receive the new ones, including us. We had a great time! And so did several families with small kids riding with us.

We seated ourselves in the last car, thinking that such a location would help us get a good photo of the locomotive as it chugged around a curve, and we were not disappointed, getting a nice picture of it crossing a trestle through the deeply forested mountains here, only a stone's throw from busy I-70 yet seemingly a world away from all the hustle and bustle.

For train enthusiasts, there was the added bonus of the short stop at the old engine house, with its neat interpretive displays about the history of this mining railroad that was abandoned and dismantled as World War II loomed, with the gold and silver mines closing and tourism trickling to make it all unsustainable. Local efforts, aided by a $1 million charitable grant and Union Pacific's donation of track and ties, led to its full restoration in the 1980's.

This train is special enough that, as we did, you will likely pass some photographers perfectly poised in the hilly woods to get just the best shot of the train passing. There is a special tour of the old mines available, but we were pressed for time so had to skip it, meaning that our trip was just one hour. OK, as that was an hour in which saw and enjoyed much, so we came away happy and hope for a longer visit next time around.

Highly recommended.

We were three adults traveling from the East Coast hoping to catch some beautiful views of the mountains. (online photos sure make it seem like that's the case.) however our experience was quite different, the only views we had were of cheesy plastic animals set along the route. At the top of the mountain, before returning down, the train stopped for 20 minutes at their gift shop! On the way down, one of their employees spent the ride trying to sell photos . The locomotive burns motor oil which had a very predominant smell throughout the experience. Trust me, this is a no go.

By Sebastian825dlb |

If you love trains and beautiful scenery then this is for you. Staff was friendly and helpful. Best advice is to purchase tickets online and get the schedule time for the first ride in the morning. After that it gets busy with crowds. Be aware that the coal ash from the steam locomotive will most likely fall on you if you are in the open cars. It’s really no big deal as the partials are small but don’t wear white. Look out along the ride for Bigfoot in the woods.

I could not figure out how to purchase a ticket on their website for the parlor car and a mine tour, so I called them and asked. They assured me I was doing it correctly, the cost was $34/per person. So I bought them, went there, took the train ride, and then found out that I had not in fact purchased the mine tour. If you click on their website link for Purchase Tickets, the only options were all "daily round trip train", so I assumed the mine tour was part of it. Now, looking at different days, it appears that if there are still tickets available for the tours, they show up. When the tours are filled, all you see is Daily Round Trip Train, so you have no idea that you can't get the tour. If you go to the Mine Tours page and then click "Ride and Mine", the same thing happens. Annoying, since I bought 6 tickets for my family expecting to take a train ride to a mine and do some gold panning, and instead I just took a train ride.

We traveled with our 11 yr old and 13 yr old sons in late June, to ride the Georgetown Loop RR and we also took the Lebanon Mine tour with the gold panning. My husband and sons are RR train enthusiasts. We opted for the Parlor Class Car, as I did not want to fight the soot from the train or possible rain and we had been getting plenty on the Western slope. I was a tad hesitant though, because I am a photographer and was afraid my shots would be greatly limited. Both of these events and all my choices were spot on. We were well pleased. There are sliding windows by each table in the parlor car, so you will be able to get many photo opps. They serve you drinks and snacks, which is a nice treat during your journey. The crew are amazing and they all help tell the history of the RR and the mines and town that helped build it. *If you would like extra time on the train, to see the under of the beautiful loop bridge, and time to visit the museum, please take the SILVER PLUME tickets. It is only a few minute drive outside of Georgetown and well worth that extra littl drive on exchange for train time! Also, they do take a family/group picture before boarding, so expect to say cheese!
**The "Lebanon Mine Tour". I am a mine buff, but everyone in our family enjoyed the mine. The history was unexpected, the temperature inside is actually 40° so they aren't kidding about bringing a jacket. The gold psnning was fun and they instructed you all along instead of leaving you to yourself. They show you various buildings belonging to the mines and their usage, and various equipment!
**NOTE** this is at an altitude of 9000ft, I had a hard time breathing here due to my asthma, even though I live here at 5000 ft and often venture to 6000 and 7000ft. There are steep areas to navigate to and from the mine tunnels and they are unavoidable and there is a timed train to catch. Please keep this in mind for those not use to high altitudes, asthma sufferrrs, heart patients and anyone with fragile health. Tell your guide as you go TOO the tunnel sights that you will need more time going back to the train, if need be. There are no wheel chaiemrs or strollers allowed here.

My boyfriend and I were visiting Denver... we saw the great reviews for this online and figured we needed to make a day trip to Georgetown to do this.

This is definitely more of a family activity for very young children than it was for adults/couples. The train did not go more than 15 mph the entire way. The "Loop" was a little deceiving - we were on the ride for about 20 minutes, stopped, and went in reverse the same exact route that we took there.

I mean, the views were nice but you could probably see more by simply driving on the Guanella Pass Scenic Byway. Georgetown is a cute little town but we were bummed that we wasted an entire day here when we could've gone somewhere more worthwhile.

DO NOT BOOK THE “PRESIDENTIAL” train if it’s the TAHOE. It is NOT a presidential class experience. They cram a bunch of people into a dining car and sell it as presidential class. This is the biggest scam ever and my family of 15 and I were very disappointed. We’ve loved the presidential car in the past years when we did this and had made a tradition of it, but looks like we’ll be finding a new tradition from now on.

By Joanne H |

There is nothing too this. The train travels partway up the side of a mountain, sits there for awhile then reverses and goes back. Tacky straw animals, no mining discussion, expensive and a big waste of time.

By VicB423 |

We made a reservation the day of the trip and only thing available was coach. Although - I'm glad that's what we did. We were able to sit outside, enjoy the weather, and the scenery. The train ride wasn't too different than others we've been on, but we had never been to a silver mine. We did the extended mine tour. We both really enjoyed it, and we learned a lot of history from our guide, Rachael. She did a great job - and I was surprised when I asker her how long she'd been giving tours and she said a month!! I figured she'd been there several years. We were glad we took the time to do this on our way to Denver.

By foodiefamilyUSA |

This was one of those adventures that everyone young and old can enjoy. You just have to get on the train then sit back and relax. The views are spectacular as well as the tour guide that shared such interesting tidbits about the area. Great thing to do during the Covid pandemic as social distancing is easy to do.

By Kim449 |

I definitely have mixed reviews about this "scenic train". 1) Yes, we did see some pretty terrain but we could have seen the same from the highway since it ran parallel to the tracks the majority of the way. 2) It was not a loop but a track that you doubled back on so you saw the exact same thing twice. 3) It says allow 2-3 hours but I have no idea why. The train ride itself was only 45 minutes at best. We spent longer in the gift shop waiting to board. No bathrooms on train but not a problem due to the short duration.
We booked the nicer VIP car (the Waldorf Club) which cost $200 for 4 and it included a soda, water or hot drink of your choice and a basket of snacks (the chocolate covered oreos were awesome). Since the ride was slightly disappointing, I would recommend the other cars because they get the same view and would probably be a better value. You will miss out on the complimentary food and drink though.
I know they offer a night ride w/lights so that might be better if you have children.

By Soulpants |

This was a great activity to do with children. Besides the incredible scenic views they had Bigfoot sightings along the route & other fun toys to "I Spy !" The timing of the round trip ride was perfect. Great museum at the halfway point.

We had fun on this old timey train ride from the cool old town of
Georgetown thru mountains and tour of a silver mine. We took our kids and grandkids and all were delighted to spend the afternoon this way.Highly recommend.

By Vaughan S |

This is a fun attraction for all the family. A real trip back in time to experience travel on an old time narrow gauge steam locomotive. We had a lot of fun 😎👍🏼

By oldladyontheroad31 |

Lets just say, for almost 100.00 we got to set on a cushion bench, that they tried to squeeze 4 people into. You got a cheese and fruit plate with 1/2 apple cut up, 10 blueberries and 10 grapes. A small container of honey, small amount of cheese and a free soda, tea or water.
The rain consisted of going straight up the rail, then coming straight back down the same way. All you could see were rocks, bottoms of trees, a creek and at one point, Georgetown off in the distance.
We purchased Presidential car seats. Don't bother!!! there is nothing special here.

Also, be aware, the only bathrooms are by the parking lot.

I've ridden several trains in different states, I would not recommend this one to anyone.

My friend had never been on any train, so just the experience was okay with her.
I've been on several and this one was worthless.

By LynaeKenen |

The inital part of the ride was great. The way the seat are set up is not the best for views, you have to sit sideways on the bench in order to look out if you are on coach, but it wasn't bad for the first part of the trip since we took the 10AM train time. However, the Lebanon mine tour was a dissapointment. They should keep the ghost stories for the ghost tours, and stick to facts for the regular tour. The tour guides should also be better trained to facts, not just myth. Once we got back on the train our continued ride to the Georgetown terminal was good, however, they had oversold the coach tickets forcing people to squish into the people on both sides even though you might not know them. This might be a popular tourist location, but they need to come up with better seating options, like knowing how many people can sit on a coach comfortably, (and those people are not all size 0).

About two weeks ago, we visited Georgetown with friends and family who traveled from out of town. The tour was absolutely beautiful. The train was well kept and the tour guide was really funny! We learned the history of the railroad as well as the history of the town. Very cute picture opportunities and very helpful staff. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone wanting to spend and afternoon in a mountain town!

By neomi |

The loop rail road was real fun. But the combined silver mine tour was excellent! We had Sena - as our guide. she was knowledgeable, sharp, funny and a true story teller. We loved every moment and learned a lot!

By John R |

Nicely maintained historic railroad in a very scenic area just outside Denver. Open sided cars allow great photo opportunities. Can combine with gold mine tours but we were very satisfied with just the train.

By Hewitty15 |

Take the steam train between Georgetown & Silver Plume and get a great appreciation for how the old west moved its people, goods and ore. Drop into the Lebanon Mine and see just what the miners went through to scrape the silver from the ground. Immensely educational and informative. One word of caution tho. You'll be active at 9000+ spot elevation. If you're on oxygen or have breathing issues, be very careful enjoying these activities.

By 20Tibbs |

Easy to book, easy to find. A thoroughly enjoyable morning. The staff were great and the scenery is spectacular. If you’re in Denver, make a point of going to visit.

By rajaa25 |

Total waste of time and money. You are close to the interstate most of the trip and hardly go into the mountains. Drive up the mountain with your car to get a better view of the area.

By S F |

A fun time was had by all on the haunted railroad. Walking through a spooky mine tunnel waiting for the inevitable jump scare was just what we were expecting. The tale they were weaving as we moved from station to station was a little complicated and the finale was hard to hear but we got the gist of it. Recommend adding some ghouls to the short train ride next year.

We rode the Georgetown Loop Steam Train a couple of days ago and got a table for four in the parlor car. There was plenty of parking and it was easy to find the ticket counter in the gift shop. Our train was the Autumnfest train but we are not beer drinkers so we passed by the samples and cans of beer. The journey is only 30-32 minutes each way with a stop at the top for restrooms/gifts from the gift shop. There are some pros and one con to the parlor car - pros are that you have reserved seating (no first come, first served as in the other cars), you are warm and inside (people in the open cars were wearing jackets, hats, gloves etc.), you get a basket of snacks and free bottled water/soda. Hot chocolate, apple cider and coffee can be purchased (see photo) and you have nice staff to look after you. The only con was that it is really difficult to take photos while the train is going along as there is so much reflection from the windows. If you want to see the colors I would suggest going earlier in October as most of the leaves had already fallen. They were also already setting up the route for Christmas. However overall it was a great experience.

Starting with the mine tour part: We weren’t sure which mine tour to do: the extended mine tour, or the mine tour with gold panning. I couldn’t find good info on which was best for a family with kids from age 7-15. We chose to do the tour with gold panning, and this was great for us! The non-extended mine tour was PLENTY, and it was very fun and informative. Unless you are just a super mine fan, I’d say this tour is plenty. We were glad we panned for gold as all 3 kids loved getting to do this and take home a bottle of real gold flakes.
NOTE: If you are doing a mine tour, wear close toe shoes!! We bought tickets the night before. At the ticket counter up front, the person saw that my husband had worn tevas, and they told him he couldn’t do the mine tour (also no refunds!). They marked thru his ticket for that part and refused to give him the bracelet for it. We were all so so disappointed, and honestly I didn’t enjoy the train ride because of this. At the stop in Silver Plume, I asked our conductor about it. She looked very surprised that this was told to him. She said she would ask the mine guys when we arrived there. So then we had hope again. We arrived at the mine stop, and she went and asked the mine guys. They said it was fine as long as he knew he would get his feet wet (yeah, that’s why he wore those in the first place!). We were so relieved he got to enjoy the mine with us. We also saw other people who had on much less supportive footwear like Birks who apparently had not had issues at checkin! I think he just got a hard nose person. Anyway, so glad I asked, but also just avoid this by wearing sneakers! (The mine guys said they have had people do the tour in stilettos, so they weren’t worried about tevas!)
The train ride itself was nice. Do wish they’d upgrade their PA system as others have said.

Trip across the trestle bridge was thrilling. This entire trip far exceeded my expectations. Even though it was lightly raining we stayed dry in a covered car with open sides.

By John P |

In an effort to complete all the train rides in Colorado, we chose to come to Silver Plume Station because this was right on our way to Steamboat Springs via Vail from Denver and was just a short train ride with a mine tour, gold panning, and lunch.
The Everett Mine tour came with panning for gold and hot dogs, chips, lemonade, and sugar cookies. There was a $7 discount off the regular price for the 10 am train, making it $37.50 for each person and took about 2 hours to complete. The museum had restored railroad cars and the loop concept was interesting to climb the elevation required. Engineers designed a corkscrew route that traveled nearly twice that distance to connect them, slowly gaining more than 600 feet in elevation. The route included horseshoe curves, grades of up to 4%, and four bridges across Clear Creek, including the massive Devil's Gate High Bridge.
The weather was perfect and the open car views incredible. We were hoping the train continued into Georgetown and would allow for some walking around shops but it ends at a station and has a 5 minute turn around time. They took a group photo of our family but we didn't spring for the $20 price tag.

Absolute great way to spend a couple hours. Beautiful scenery and just a cool experience. Rail crew was awesome and helpful with all train nerd questions I had. All in all, fantastic

By SeasonedTraveler1K |

We took the enclosed car with the snack service and it was definitely worth the extra cost. We have taken the train before, but only in the summer. We went in late spring and there was fresh snow. It was like traveling through a wonderland - like Narnia. The grandkids loved it. It was a magical memory we will have forever.

Went to the Haunted Mine event. Was very nice... Heavy or'dourves before ride was nice. Halloween acting was entertaining. Mine is very low and thankfully they provide and insist on wearing hard hats as I hit my 6'2" head a few times.

Was a little surprised the train ride itself was only about 15 minutes.

Lots of hipsters... See pic.

By Heather D |

Beautiful ride! The leaves were turning and the mountains were beautiful. It was a great ride and the bridge is very scenic. It's not a long ride, but the open air seats are the best for pictures. I recommend going in the fall. We could hear the announcer just fine. it's get really busy.

By Misty J |

A perfect fall day to take the train thru Georgetown Loop. My husband and I reserved the October Fall Festival trip in the covered car which included snack, drinks, the mining tour, and free festival with a free craving pumpkin afterwards! It’s a Wonderful day trip a must do during Fall season, the colors are absolutely amazing, the train ride was fun and interesting learning about the railroad. The mining tour was fun and learned about mining in the area. This is the second train trip we have done. It never gets old we will do it again.

By Rene' S |

We were a little disappointed in the mine your because it doesn't go very far due to it being blocked. The volume of the narrator needs to be turned up a little bit. The views are breathtaking!

By Lauren K |

It was not a “bad” experience. Everyone was super friendly and very pleasant. As a family (11 year old boy) the ride was pretty boring... but scenic.

By Sachin B |

Georgetown train ride is good 1 hour long train ride. Its good to see old steam engines and taking a ride in the open train. You will see great views of valley and kids would enjoy it.

By Bill B |

A gem of an activity if you are a real steam engine lover. A real educational experience for the whole family. Even the teens will enjoy this walkthrough time. The gold mine tour was also a great addition to the days' activities.

By Kat W |

The Georgetown Loop railroad is an out and back ride of about two miles on a narrow-gauge railroad. The cars are open, so dress for the weather. The ride takes about an hour, including a stop of 15 minutes at one end and another stop of about five minutes for those who get off for a mining tour.

By Alexa B |

I visited the Georgetown to do the holiday train. One of the workers was informative and enthusiastic about his job, and told us how they decorate for four months. I sat in the coach section, which is the cheapest. The lights were good, but I think the experience is definitely a lot more magical for kids. It was cool to know the history of Georgetown while riding on the train. I wonder if seeing the scenery during the daytime would have been better, as an adult experience.

By Tozs1 |

We left from the silver plume tracks. While riding the steam train would have been neat it may have been better seeing it pass us and go around the bend!
We were very early for our ticket time, but Sam was amazing and friendly. Everyone was welcoming and full of knowledge. I can’t say enough great things about our experience.

By OhioArubaLovers |

We had a great time on a beautiful autumn day in September. The train ride was so nice and everyone was enjoying the Steam locomotive pulling us. Had fun panning for gold and Jimbo gave us a interesting tour of the silver mines.

By Mike H |

We didn’t go on a mine tour so that might have made this attraction more interesting or fun, but I doubt it. There is very little scenery other than a few views of the beautiful Clear Creek. But there is nit much to see here, especially considering the scenic beauty available in Colorado. The twin ride is short and boring. A drive through other parts of the state are much more rewarding and a lot less expensive!

By Pam E |

I did enjoy riding the train and going into the mind. Very educational i would have given a five star but our group was larger than their average of 15. We had 22 and it made it difficult to see what he was explaining. The mind is a walking tour.

By alliebdive |

We took the train ride with the Lebanon mine tour and the gold panning. It was absolutely excellent. The train ride is quite short, but very scenic, maybe 40 minutes in total. We got on in Silver Plume - nice little museum and town to check out. We rode in coach open seating which was fine as it was a warm sunny day and best for photos. The commontary was very interesting. When we got to the Lebanon Mine, there were 3 or 4 different tours. We were the only 2 doing our tour which was amazing. Our tour guide - a womn called Sheri - was superb, she really knew her stuff. The tour lasted over an hour. We panned for gold first and came away with a phil each. Then we went into the mine buildings and heard about the lives of the miners and the children who worked the mines. Then we went about 500 feet into the mine itself which waas fascinating. The ore is still there and visible and other things apart from silver. Not hard to imagine it in use. The best mine tour I have ever done. Definitely take the time to do it. Afterwards we got back on the train and rode the loop back to Silver Plume. Great views especially going over the high bridge. THoroughly enjoyed this trip.

By RebeccaMama23 |

Took my in laws for part of their Christmas present and enjoyed it very much. Paid for the Waldorf car and was glad as seating was very comfy. First drink is free (soda, coffee, etc) and a little plate of snacks. Ride a little short (1 hour) but we had an awesome attendant, Sena (?), who was full of great history about the train, area, etc. She really made it a great ride! They also have a photographer who takes a group picture, $20.00 for two 5 by 7 shots.

By April F |

Let me start by saying I love trains & hardly ever pass up an opportunity for a ride through the countryside when visiting an area. This train ride is WAY OVERPRICED! We spent more time boarding, un-boarding, and waiting for passengers to board from the 'mine' experience than actually traveling on the train! It is really only about a maximum 15 minute ride each way with A LOT of "filler" time. For the price of 2 adults, you can go do so much more elsewhere. The 'museum' needs a lot of work-- it seems like an afterthought. It is NOT A LOOP-- in the traditional sense; it goes back-n-forth on the same very short track between 2 points. I really wanted to love this but it is not worth it, trust me!

By peijenn2018 |

Visited this attraction when visiting with friends in Denver. We went with their two young children, who had a blast.

Scenery is beautiful. It was still snow covered when we were there, which made for very lovely woodland views.

We went in the ‘cheap’ car so it was important to be bundled up a little.

By Mhobson3 |

Excellent accommodations, great views, our tour guide was fantastic. Overall I would highly recommend!

By Shannon N |

We did the mining tour. Nick the your guide was so friendly and funny. My 10?year old got altitude sickness and he escorted us out where we met a lovely lady named Tina. She went above and beyond to make my done feel special. I am so grateful for her wonderful attitude and special treats. Tess helped us own for Gold.. she is an expert. I highly recommend coming to this little price of history.

We enjoyed our train ride. It rained during our outing which did make things uncomfortable for about 15 minutes considering it was a down pour. The train does have a few umbrellas to loan out, but as you can see in the picture they are not what you would call in great working order (we had a good laugh). So I suggest bringing your own, as well as any drink or snack you may want as you will be on the train for about an hour. But keep in mind there are no restroom breaks once you are on the train. The views were so pretty.

COVID requirements: They require masks while you are waiting to board the train, even if you are social distancing. They limit the amount of people in the restroom at one time. They did sanitize and wipe the train cars down in between trips. Once you board the train (they are limiting the number of tickets sold for each trip) they give you the option for open or covered train car. They have families sit a good distance apart (which is nice for the social distance aspect). However despite being outdoors, and socially distanced from others you are still required to wear your mask. I am unsure if this is their rules, or county mandate. But this was a tad annoying for us, especially when it started raining. We literally had water dripping from our soggy wet masks.

All in all we would most certainly ride again, just will bring our own umbrella the next time (LOL)

A wonderful man named Jimbo will delight you with the best historic tour you can experience in a mining tunnel. The train ride was good, but the mine tour is unforgettable.

By Kevin F |

Perfect fun little atmosphere for a family! Length of time just for train ride was 20 minutes each way with a 15 minute stop, which I think made this a just right experience for my family of little ones. It was enough to see the power of a train/locomotive which they have seen in their cartoons, and the view and information was great for an adult like me. The views from the bridge were stunning, and the history of the area with the humor was quite enjoyable.

By Cynthia A |

Weather was perfect. The train ride through the woods was delightful. If it had been raining or cold, I would not have enjoyed it as much. The cars were open so there would not have been protection from the weather.

By Mike F |

This is a fun little ride. We had good weather so, that helped. They have a conductor on board with a fantastic voice and great story telling! I told him he sounds like Alan Roach. For those who don't know; that is a compliment. I have read other reviews complaining about the emissions, we didn't experience that. You can smell the exhaust, but it is part of the charm and not too bad by any means. Look for discount coupons on travelzoo to really make this experience worth it.

By Dorothy N |

Our main visit to Georgetown was the train ride! So beautiful, the only recommendation would be to bring an umbrella or get a covered car, they had a limited number so we got a little wet but highly recommend!

By adwok |

Was a fun excursion with pretty scenery. We rode in the Parlor car and the "snack" provided was actually nicer than expected (cheeses, crackers, fruit, hummus, cookies) - plus having a table and chair was a plus. It was a full train so glad we reserved ahead. Just too bad so many needed to buy alcohol in the morning hours for such a short trip (1 1/2 hours) with so many little ones to keep watch over. That plus the slow boarding line were the only negatives.

By Melissa W |

It ways chilly day but we bundled up and went to the station anyway. We had been looked forward to the ride prior to our trip to Colorado. From the process of purchasing tickets to the history narrated by the engineer, it was extremely organized and well -designed.

By DebG |

We booked the parlor car in case the weather was bad. Turned out to be a gorgeous day, but the car was perfect and served free snack basket and beverage (can buy beer and wine). Every staff member can answer any question. We toured the Lebanon Extended mine tour which was fantastic. Jimbo was our guide (originally from CT) and was very informational and entertaining. All in all very worth the money and time to do it.

Absolutely spectacular, words can’t express how much fun we had. All we can say is if you want to experience the area the George Loop is the way.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

This is a vintage train with authentic steam engine. It makes a loop and the actual ride is about an hour. It is not as scenic or dramatic as the train from Durango to Silverton or the one in Leadville, but it is probably perfect for kids. The only drawback is we could not hear the narration provided by the young worker. She had a high pitched voice and the speakers were terrible. So we missed getting any informative information. Since the trip is not very dramatic, I think the railroad should invest in better speakers so people could hear. Staff were very nice.

By baileygirl2017 |

After 33 years in Colorado, we finally took the train. Never again. The view is mostly rocks and the highway. Same view up and back. The entire ride was about 40 minutes. We stopped at Silver Plume just long enough to put the train in reverse. I was looking forward to being pampered sitting in the Presidential car, that didn't happen. Stale crackers, over ripe fruit and a $6 4 oz Dixie cup of flat champagne......ugh! I felt sorry for the folks that they squeezed in 4 people into a table for 2. And then they were only given snacks for 2 and had to share among the 4 of them....Yikes! The people across from us didn't even know the two that they were jammed in with. So many beautiful places to visit in Colorado. Bypass this one.

By Luckdog303 |

So this is the second visit for us to the Georgetown Loop RR. This time we did the Everett Mine Tour, gold panning, and train ride. Train ride was stunning, 360° of incredible scenery and beautiful landscape. The mine tour was wonderful. Definitely shorter than the lantern tour, and not quite as in depth, but enjoyed the staff, the stories, and the coolness of the mine, as it was quite a hot day. Definitely recommend this one for kids, only over 5 though as they cannot go into the mine if they are younger. Quick snack and gold panning, then back on the train heading to the other depot. Very fun, really crowded. Can't wait to do the polar tour during Christmas time

Georgetown Loop Tour along with Lebanon Mine Tour and Gold Panning. Rocky Mountain Railroad was a fun experience. Nice views and a good way to learn about the area's mining.

I was excited about taking a train ride through the Colorado mountains, but it did not live up to my expectations. The scenery was beautiful but the train ride was too short and the stops too long.

Beautiful trip, nice gift store with very reasonable prices. The open-air seating was great and the scenery was gorgeous. We were travelling with my MIL who has knee problems and this was a wonderful way to see the scenery without further injury to her knee.

If you like train history, you will love the loop. My family thoroughly enjoyed the trip and the silver mine tour.

Pleasant enough but you can see the same scenery from your car on I70. The seats are uncomfortable benches, which face into the train car, you need to twist 180 degrees to snap a photo.

This was on my bucket list of train rides that I have wanted to visit. It was a nice day, and a good time to ride this railroad. Staff and the ride were awesome.

The railroad got its start back in the area’s mining days. Today, it serves as a way to experience the sights and history of this part of Colorado. The sightseeing trip takes a little over an hour and passes through beautiful mountain scenery. A narrator provides excellent commentary, explaining the history of the railroad and pointing out various spots of interest. The trip is suitable for all age groups, and on our trip the ages ranged from toddlers to seniors—all seeming to greatly enjoy themselves.

Most cars have bench seats and are open air, although shade is provided in quite a few. There is an enclosed “parlor car” with comfortable seats, available at an increased price.

The train holds a large number of people, but crowd control was excellent. The entire operation was professionally handled, making for a stress free experience. I highly recommend a trip on this historic train.

Historic & fun adventure as part of our Trafalgar Tour of Colorado. This is an open air train ride that is extensive and quite chilly to ride on in May. You will need a winter jacket, hat, scarf & gloves. A blanket would add to your enjoyment as the train ride extends for quite an elevation & it is cold. Cute gift shop & nice photo opportunities on grounds.

We loved it! The hour long train ride has amazing views, the Mine Tour very cool and interesting (Anna was an excellent tour guide), and panning for gold was fun (each person goes home with the tiny gold flakes that you found in a little bottle). It was a splurge for our family of five but totally worth it.

Tips: It was easier to hear the narrator on the train from the covered cars
It was not as cold in the mines as we thought it would be...sweatshirt is fine
My tall sons had to duck through much of the mine tour.
Bathrooms were open and clean.
Gift shop had pretty reasonable prices.

Nice ride into the mountains. Views were very pretty. Was difficult sometimes to hear the conductor but was able to garner most of the information. Sitting near a speaker might help. The 10am ride is somewhat cool temperature-wise for July so I would recommend a jacket. Also the state of Colorado is working I70 west of Denver so leave plenty of time for travel as traffic frequently came to a standstill. Almost missed the train due to this! Would recommend a stop in the town of Georgetown as the grocery store is so cute and the owner quite knowledgeable about the town’s history.

Visited Denver and surrounding areas for a week and did approx 2 things each day, and this was by far the least favorite (and most expensive). Have two girls, 14 & 3 and them nor my husband/myself were very impressed. Had paid for presidential tickets and for how quick it went, we wouldn’t do it again.

Love the steam whistle and the chugging sound of the engine as the train headed for SilverPlume. Fun to experience transportation from another time as you visualize the silver and gold mine tailings on the mountain side. Panning for gold and touring the mine added to the experience.

Not worth the money - could not hear a word of the narration, and we were sitting right under a speaker. Not much to see on the mine tour as there was no equipment inside and the tour guide didn't really know much about mining. The stop at Silver Plume was a joke, 15 minutes to see a tiny gift shop and use the facilities, and you HAD to go through the gift shop to get to them (and back through to get back to the train) as they had the outdoor routes roped off.

The Georgetown Loop Railroad is a section of the line established in the late 1800's to move ore, freight, and passengers to the mining towns in central Colorado. It was also an engineering feat of it's time to navigate the 6% grade. If you're a fan of railroads and steam engines, this one's for you.

The train ride itself is relatively short and not a scenic as others like the Durango-Silverton it does give you further reference to the mining history of the area. Recommend including the extended mine tour in your trip which takes you into one of the late 1800's area silver mines. We had taken the train some years earlier, but didn't do the mine tour then.

Our mine guide Rachel made the tour entertaining and interesting. The extended tour takes you deeper into the mine so you get to see a few more things and get a better flavor of what being an 1800's era miner was like.

A nice addition to spending the day in Georgetown!

A very enjoyable ride pulled by a steam engine. The scenery was very beautiful. I rode in the open air car. Going over the bridge was something to see.

This kind of "is what it is" -- you get to ride an old railroad along an old mining route.

It was good -- not amazing, not awful -- just good. I wish we could have heard the tour guide a little better; the audio wasn't great. If you're really into trains, this is likely a good choice for you; if not, your time in Colorado might be better spent elsewhere.

Beware sitting too close to the locomotive; we were hit with ash for the first half of the trip, despite the awning over our train car.

(We did not do the mining tour; perhaps we should have.)

I've done the train ride and mine tour twice now and it is by far the best in the area! The train ride is historical and factual, while still having surprises for kids. The mine tour takes you the furthest into the mines than any other local tour and is incredibly detailed in its stories, and facts. Both tour guides were fantastic!

Train ride is pretty boring and slow. you mostly ride around a mountain and see a lot of the interstate and lots of rock and trees. If you come on a weekend you have to park nearly 1 mile away from the depot and walk which isn't that great for older people. My advice would be to skip it. But if you're bored and repetitive scenery on a slow bumpy train is your thing by all means go for it.

Really beautiful route! We got to see the aspens turning gold and enjoyed the guide's history and banter. (One issue: They were setting up their Christmas lights along the route in early October, which made the trip a little surreal.)

This was a great way to spend an hour or so. The views were excellent. The guides were informative. They also came around to each group individually asking if anyone had any questions.
Book ahead of time if you want to do the optional waling mine tour. They only have a limited number of spots per trip.

The train ride didn't seem like anything too spectacular unless you was a little kid. The view from the train wasn't much except for a chipmunk or 2. The Extended Mine tour was interesting.

The train ride was very well organized and run. It was a adventure on a cold day. It only lasts a little over an hour.

Great time. Price was reasonable and a good history was given by the conductor. We felt very safe and everyone was wearing a face mask. We had our 2 year old grand son and 5 adults. All had a good time.

Visited about a week ago for Western days with wife and grandbabies! we love it! the staff was very nice! the actors, cowboys and madams were excellent! Our grandbabies, ages 5 tru 8, love the scenery and interacting with the cowboys!! I highly recommend this trip to everyone and especially families with children, ages 4 and up!!!

We went on the Christmas train with my family and they all loved it. The staff was very kind and made sure our trip was well worth it.

The train ride was wonderful. We had coach tickets which, in my opinion, are better than the parlor cars! We did the extended mine tour and had David, a wonderful guide, take us through and explain the whole process. Highly recommend!

Make a reservation online before just driving up. This is popular with mountain tour groups and fill quickly. We got lucky and 2 people cancelled so we got 2 tickets for the train. Bring your camera, kids love it, the staff is fun and full of local knowledge. Worth the price and the time!PS: They have a great General Store with beverages, snacks, and souviners!
