You can spend hours taking in the beauty at Grand View Drive. It is a wonderful, romantic spot for just hanging out with someone special!

By Sally T |

One of the top drives to show out of the country visitors .. or anyone visiting this area and even take a lunch and get a table overlooking the river

By bliming |

Beautiful drive, but hard to find. While we were passing through Peoria, we added this to our drive. It took us several tries with Garman to find the address given. No luck. Finally, we stopped at a Subway and got a soda and asked them. They gave us good directions and we found it. Don't give up, it is worth the hassle. It only takes about 15 minutes to drive, so we picked up some to-go sandwiches and sat at a park bench and enjoyed the afternoon.

A great place for a drive or walk or photography. Take some time and check it out. Also close to peoria heights for shopping and food.

By Chris R |

This is a very picturesque drive - especially for Illinois.

Worth the ten minutes or so to complete with great views of the Illinois river and surroundings..

Some intersting architecture too

By Dwayneg |

See awesome views and amazing homes as you take this scenic drive. Several benches and picnic tables along the way. I'd suggest starting at the end by the river fr most convenient viewing.

By Debbie O |

Beautiful drive with turn outs to really enjoy the view. Enjoyed the river and trees in beautiful fall colors.

By Brenda S |

Most beautiful in the fall. Took our granddaughter there for the view!! Over looks the river and nice spots to park and view the scenery!

By lslyChicago |

Illinois is scenic in a Prairie State way. This road was winding and a little hilly so it had a little charater compared to most of Illinois roads.

By MusicgirlOakLawnIL |

AWESOME!!!!!!! The homes are beautiful, but the views are breathtaking. There are multiple places to stop and sit, have a picknick and enjoy the amazing vistas. A must-see!

By handyrandy6201 |

My wife and I took a one day trip to view the fall scenery on this magnificent road that is high on a bluff overlooking the Illinois River and beautiful stately homes on the opposite side. We got some beautiful shots on her camera but I've posted some here on my iphone that i took. I would say by November 12th the colors will be just about gone. We decided to take this trip again next fall but try for the middle to end of October to see its brilliance. This is a must see!!!!!

By beejm2015 |

On a beautiful day this is truly beautiful and relaxing. Take your time to enjoy the Illinois river valley and nature.

By 111Joy |

Spring, summer, or fall on a sunny day get some takeout and head for the Drive There are a few picnic tables, if none are available just put down all the windows and enjoy the view from the car. There are many pull outs for parking. Then walk off that lunch the view on one side and beautiful homes on the other. There is a park on the south end with play ground equipment for the children. On the first pull out on the north end you will find a trail down the hill to Forest Park Nature Center for more active hikers. I love to walk there. It's for any nature lover.

Really relaxing and such a pretty view. Went a night so bridge was light up beautifully! ❤️❤️ def go again! Easy and accessible

By Danielle G |

I have been there many times, back in the day we would have a picnic up there and watch the boats on the river. Have always loved the castle up there.

Have been in the travel business for 30 years and have traveled down GRAND VIEW DRIVE for over 70 years. Have seen picture postcard perfect drives all over the U.S. and many foreign countries and I will tell you that if you are in Peoria or Peoria Hts IL you don't want to miss a drive on Grand View Drive----it is fantastic. All of the beautiful homes, gold course and country club area, wooded area and much more. The CBS station in Peoria------call letters of WMBD were named by President Teddy Roosevelt back in the late 30's. People from all over the world that have visited here have taken the time to drive on this famous drive------many times----once is not enough.

Beautiful drive and view. Seeing the beautiful houses is bonus. If you’ve never done this, you’re missing out.

Don't visit Peoria without taking time to visit Grandview Drive, located in the Village of Peoria Heights, on Peoria's Northside. At GVD upper, Peoria Heights entry, you can take a glass elevator ride atop the Peoria Heights Watertower in Peoria Heights. That eagle-eye, 360 degree view on a clear day will let you see Peoria and the full, Illinois River Valley. Bring your camera! The Heights is filled with quaint shops and restaurants that will make casual shopping enjoyable. Reclaimed RR tracks run through the Heights that have been turned into a bike trail if you are an avid biker. Bring your own bike or use a rental one available at the trail. GVD itself runs from the upper entry on the Peoria Heights bluff, running parallel to the bluff giving excellent views of the lower, Illinois River Valley. As "The Drive" as locals call it, begins to drop into the lower river valley, you will snake through a heavily wooded area, eventually coming to the lower entrance to GVD on Galena Road, next to the Illinois River. In a visit during his Presidency, Theodore Roosevelt was taken for a touring car ride on GVD. He later referenced it as the "World's Most Beautiful Drive". (WMBD) Those call letters are used by the Peoria CBS affiliate. Though it may fall short in that assessment, it is certainly one of the most beautiful drives in Illinois. If you are in Peoria, don't miss the beautiful homes, the park-like setting and river views, and the wild turkeys that regularly feed in yards of some of Peoria's most stately, beautiful, period homes. Picnic tables are there for you to enjoy a lunch with your family in a tranquil setting. The Country Club of Peoria is located on GVD, as is one of Peoria's most recognized and famous homes, referred to as "The Castle". Locals frequently take GVD to drop from the upper to lower bluff, just to enjoy the scenery. It free, it's memorable, it's beautiful, and conveniences close by in the Village of Peoria Heights will fill all your outing needs with the family. If Teddy Roosevelt loved it, I'm sure you will too!

Family visits, romantic hangout, whatever you are looking for...this view has got it!!! Drive up the hill and view the beautiful homes, then park and walk around and just admire the views.

By Amy S |

My husband I have to cruise thru Grand View a few times a year for the amazing views, big homes and of course picnic over looking the river.

By Daline40 |

As visitors to the area, usually twice a year, we have seen this drive at different times of the year and every time there is something lovely to see. There is a ride on a vintage bus or driving yourself or being driven there is usually ample time to take a steady drive to appreciate the magnificent views..

By Sharon G |

Finding this idea on Tripadvisor, we drove this loop on a winter Sunday. Luckily it was sunny and we really enjoyed it. There were only a few stopping places, and if we were here in the summer, we'd surely have taken some walks. As this was our only trip to Peoria, seeing the width of the river/lake was really interesting from these cliffs. Also it was a leisurely drive along some beautiful homes.

By dnh1940 |

Several friends joined me for a lovely picnic dinner along beautiful Grandview Drive recently. There are several spots that have a few picnic tables and we each brought a sack meal (fast food or home made) and enjoyed each other’s company and the beautiful views. It’s very high up and you can see up and down the river for miles. It’s not a place you’d expect to find picnic areas but it works and is a special surprise. Very peaceful and serene.

By Chris O |

Like Theadore Roosevelt when he drove here over 100 years ago, it is every bit as amazing every time I drive or bike this wonderful road.

By TW U |

I love to travel this road. With its beautiful views and grand multimillion dollar houses, their is plenty to look at especially in the fall with the colorful leaves.

By Edward S |

We always make sure as soon as fall is near a Sunday after church drive includes Grand View Drive. Gorgeous looking down over the tops of the trees and on the Illinois river. Would be nice to have a couple more pull off spots to stop and take in the splendor of the season.

By Ladygrl |

Grand View Drive is just a nice drive with pull offs and beautiful views of the Illinois river from the bluff. Not only are the views beautiful, but the houses along the drive are also beautiful. My favorite time for this drive is in October when the Fall colors are in full peak.

By martab686 |

The views on this drive were gorgeous! Peak fall colors when we were there. The homes along the drive are also beautiful.

By karen m |

This road goes along the river with beautiful trees in the fall. It overlooks the valley of the river and is golden when the trees are turning. There are picnic tables along the way to stop and have lunch or dinner in the warmer months.

By Michaela B |

Neat drive through a nice neighborhood and fantastische views to the river. Worth doing this little drive. Some good spots for a great sunsrise

By nancylee54 |

This is a lovely area to stroll or take a drive. The view is beautiful and there are some very nice houses along the route.

By katgriffith2011 |

The only downside is that most of the drive has houses...luckily there are pull off drives and a couple of places to stop. Not really enough space for a picnic though.

By B3964NApaulb |

Teddy Roosevelt named it the "World's Most Beautiful Drive". Great place for a picnic. Has a playground area, too. Overlooks the Illinois River.

By Curt H |

Beautiful homes (Mansions) on one side, high atop the hillside with views of the river and the horizon this drive is the perfect place to take a leisurely drive, bike ride or stroll. Peaceful, tranquil and relaxing.

By OtPot |

Very nice view. Really nice homes. I don't agree with Mr. Roosevelt about being the most scenic drive in the country. Guess the Blue Ridge Parkway was not constructed when he was around. But, if you're in the area, it is worth seeing.

By John Z |

Everyone visiting the area needs to go down Grandview Drive, particularly in the fall when the colors change. Cool drive, spots for photographing the river vistas and for picnics, small park with playground for kids at the far end.

By Aneta |

Stunning views of the river, great place to walk, bike or run while admiring breath taking scenery and beautiful homes.

By Sally G |

Grand View Drive is the crown jewel of Peoria. Ever since Teddy Roosevelt dubbed it "The World's Most Beautiful Drive", it has been the highlight of every tour through Peoria. The drive itself is but about 20 minutes (even if you're driving very slowly) but there are a few "turn offs" where you can stop and get out of the car; picnic tables (if you're lucky enough to find one that's empty; benches and gorgeous old homes on the non-river side of the drive. And the newly resuscitated "downtown" of Peoria Heights is just a couple of blocks away with loads of chici little restaurants and shops. Don't miss it if you're in Peoria.

By debbiela2014 |

When we lived in Peoria, we would go once or twice a week during good weather to soak up the view, the atmosphere, and take a break from our every day life!

By Marianne20 |

Every home has a story and I heard that one of the homes has the chandelier from Gone With the Wind. Beautiful homes and breathtaking views of the Illinois River. They also have a sidewalk so just park and stroll along the neighborhood.

By Foster F |

Grand View Drive is my favorite way to get from Peoria Heights down to the river...when I'm not in a hurry. Catch lunch, a picnic - several drive-outs to park & enjoy the view. If you're visiting Peoria, be sure to include this stretch of road.

By Young-at-hearth |

All year around it is a splendid view over the Illinois river. The most beautiful when the leaves changing in fall. Nice walk with nice houses on one side and the slope with trees to the river on the other.

By D5765TUlindag |

Beautiful scenic drive of the Peoria area. You are able to see many different styles of homes and the grounds around the homes. The view of the river is amazing.

By Kris H |

Grand View Drive - World's Most Beautiful Drive. It is beautiful, especially during the spring and fall when the colors of the trees are changing. Depending on where you stop and look out over the river, the view can be breathtaking. Keep in mind you are in a neighborhood so there is traffic and other sightseers. If you are visiting Peoria/Peoria Heights it's worth a drive through.

By Jill D |

Early Spring and late Fall this historic and panoramic drive is worth the time and effort to stop and take in natures view.

By BPVBTess |

So, when you are traveling, do you like to take in the sites? If you're a local, when family comes to town, how do you show off your town? Grand View Drive delivers EVERY time. Whether I'm scooting along on my Honda Passport, feeling the wind on my face, or taking a drive on a foggy morning, or admiring the calm beauty as the snow falls, looking down down down onto the Illinois River from The Drive makes my is calming. It's at times like these that I remember why I like living in the Midwest. It only takes 5 minutes to drive it or about an hour to hike it from one end and back. If you turn your head the other way, you have the view of beautiful homes with interesting architecture, all set back from the street. Stop by the neighborhood. You'll be glad you did :).

By Ken R |

A very interesting drive that takes multiple trips to see everything worth seeing. This is a great way to get some very good ideas if you are planning on building a home.

By jtkoehler2 |

The drive up to the top of the hill was good the view great. It will take you 10 mins. If you use gps. To find it type in 4206 grandview. It will get you to the viewing spot

By Dave C |

Great 15-minute scenic drive - on one side, a variety of nice historic, fancy homes and on the other side, various views overlooking the Illinois River. Nice walking path alongside. A few places to park, get out, walk around, and take in the views.

By Peggy A |

I grew up in Peoria and we knew this as the World's Most Beautiful Drive. My husband specifically asked that we take this drive again on this trip. As you wind your way down from the top off of Prospect, stately homes are on your right with the "Lake Peoria" section of the Illinois River on your left. You eventually reach the park and ultimately Galena Road, which travels along the river. If you're looking to spend a few minutes driving and want to see one of Peoria's loveliest areas, take Grandview Drive.

By Clarence D |

We toured here on a tour bus. The views are fantastic and the homes are marvelous. Great views of Lake Peoria.

By lauraw1602 |

Take time to take the drive, especially in the fall when the leads are changing. There are spots for picnics too.

By Offbway |

When I was in high school, this was the perfect place to park . The views of the big bend in the Illinois River, called lake Peoria are as I said spectacular. The homes are architectural gems, Teddy Roosevelt called it the worlds most beautiful drive

By Littlefitters |

A true Peoria Gem. Great view from East Peoria too. We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful river area.

By bpjj |

This appropriately named drive, often called "The World's Most Beautiful Drive," offers gorgeous views any time of year you happen to visit, so just GO. Some say Peoria's radio station WMBD is named for this description of Grandview.

By hbatz6 |

Grand view drive not only has gorgeous mansions but the best view in the city, rival to none. Provides benches to sit and absorb the beauty of the Peoria river and lush trees. Beautiful in all seasons.

By interceptpubs |

This 2.5 mile scenic drive provides visitors with some stunning views of the Illinois River valley below along with equally stunning long range views of the surrounding area. Laid out in the 1890s by Swiss-born Oscar Dubois (who also worked on the "Great White City" for Chicago's Columbian Exposition) and Frederick Law Olmsted (legendary landscape architect perhaps most famous for Central Park in New York City), Theodore Roosevelt claimed that the result was "the world's most beautiful drive."

Paralleling the drive is 1.75 miles of paved sidewalks as well as a mile long nature trail for hikers. Along the drive are several overlooks, complete with park benches and picnic tables, where some of the best views can be enjoyed. There is also a park with playgrounds, volleyball and baseball facilities, a pavilion, and restrooms.

By 139mike139 |

Awesome scenic views of the river! Nice Mansions on the drive. Some look like castles! There are places where you can pull over and enjoy the views or you can have a picnic as well! Nice big oak trees! Road is very winding!

By MidwestLiketoTravel |

What a beautiful scenic drive - on one side, a variety of nice homes and on the other, various picturesque views of the Illinois River. In May, we also had the bonus of seeing some blooming trees and flowers. Nice walking path and people were out enjoying a fine spring day. This is a short (15 minute) drive but well worth it.

By Christina A |

Had some time between doctors appointments and decided to see what all the fuss was about. Best decision ever!! There were many places to pull over and enjoy the view, as well as scattered benches and picnic tables. The homes alone were worth the drive! We'll definitely be cruising this neighborhood again when we're in town. Wonderful spot for picnics.

By joe-chicago-23 |

The road is one big loop and most of it has beautiful views on both sides of the road. There are some amazing homes on one side and the Illinois River views on the other side.
As far as parking goes, there is a nice park in the middle but no views there. Along the main road there are several scenic overlooks where parking is available. At these and other places, there are also picnic tables and benches, plus walking paths.

By Bristolmichele321 |

Grand view Drive, with its elegant homes and stunning views, is always a favorite place to drive. If you're showing it off to visitors or just getting from A to B, it's a beautiful drive or a beautiful place to park and walk.
In the summer, there are places to pull into and have a picnic on the grass. Lots of walkers along this stretch too. Spring, the flowers are all appearing and Autumn shows off its magnificent foliage. The colours of the changing leaves are a must see. It's still beautiful even in winter with its white blanket draped everywhere, just bundle up!
You absolutely have to take your camera with you.

By Rena424 |

I would have my parents visit and we would go on the drive here. I have even taken my friends when they have visited. I'm hoping to take my fiance with me soon when we go visit campus... it will be his first time seeing where I went to school. I love the houses and the views!!

By ltownsend2 |

This drive exceeded our expectations. It is enjoyable by car or on foot. We tried both. A lovely morning walk in July. There are also trails to explore the forest below.

By NatParkLove |

One of my favorite views is from a picnic table once the woodchipped walkway appears on the side of the road. It's probably at least a couple miles down the road. There is a single, secluded picnic table down a little slope that has an awesome view of the river between two trees and is usually not taken. A great place for a picnic lunch, reading a book or just enjoying nature. Grandview is even more awesome in the fall!

No restrooms here, so plan ahead if you come. There is also an access point to the Pimiteoui Hiking Trail that will take you out to Forest Park if you hike the whole thing.

By Mark H |

This is gorgeous park that you can walk or drive through overlooking the river and a beautiful residential area with country club.

If you have time walk, if you are short on time, make the time to at least drive.

By parubnich |

This is a little bit of Heaven, you stand on the cliffs edge and can see for miles. Lovely fall foliage

By Edward Y |

Nice view off the bluff to Illinois River-- mansions and Peoria Country Club shows what was grand in this railroad mud-west town.

Great hit as a family picnic area!

By JeanRing5 |

There is a story that is told about Grand View Drive. In 1910 President Teddy Roosevelt visited the Peoria area and drove along Grand View. He proclaimed it "The World's Most Beautiful Drive". While I would go so far as to say that, I would say it is Peoria's most beautiful drive. Every season has its own unique beauty from the bluff overlooking the IL River. There is a walking path that follows the drive and even some hiking trails that can be accessed from the drive - if you know where to look. The homes along Grand View are an added bonus of interest as well.

By Lindsey W |

The neighborhood is surrounded by beautiful houses. There are two houses that look like castles and are absolutely amazing.

By sarah k |

Don't miss Grand View Drive for the scenic river views. The fall is an especially good time to visit, which the changing of the leaves. The colors when in full change are just gorgeous. Different times of year offer a different experience as when the leaves are gone in the winter, you can see more down the hills than in spring. Spring and summer bring the boats on the river so that is fun too. Lots of spots for picnics, etc. A great place to just take time out of busy life and sit and enjoy the view.

By Philip E |

Deemed the Worlds Most Beautiful Drive. This was a short fun little ride and a good place to stop and take in The best part of Peoria IL. Some very scenic river views and some pretty over the top homes. This is a "must do" ...if, you are already in the area.

By Taylor B |

You wouldn't think a scenic view like Grand View Drive would exist in mostly flat Illinois, would you? During a 1910 visit, President Theodore Roosevelt is said to have proclaimed that it was the "World's Most Beautiful Drive." Perhaps Roosevelt never visited Monument Valley. But Grand View Drive, a winding 2 1/2-mile road which stretches along the Illinois River bluffs from Prospect Road to Illinois Route 29 in Peoria and Peoria Heights, is full of scenery that Norman Rockwell would appreciate. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Major portions of the road provide a panoramic view of the Illinois River and its valley as well as clear views of some of the most prestigious and historic homes in the area. Along the road there are several outlooks for sight-seers, the Peoria Country Club with its golf course and tennis courts and a large park. Be sure to bring your camera. For trivia fans or historians, the roadway is near the birthplace of the first gasoline-powered car in America, the Duryea automobile, which was built in 1893 by Charles Duryea.

By kekremer |

Stroll along this scenic route for beautiful views of the river. Great for all ages to enjoy the beauty of the area.

By WeDreamOfTravel |

Local legend says that Teddy Roosevelt visited Peoria and was driven along this road. Captivated by the gorgeous scenery, he proclaimed that it was the world's most beautiful drive. This comment was turned into the station call letters for a local TV/Radio station: WMBD.

The man may have exaggerated somewhat, but it most definitely IS a spectacular view of the Illinois River valley, lush woods, and some of Peoria's most beautiful period architecture in the vintage homes that line it. It's free, parking is usually available, and it is just a short distance from the trendy shopping and dining places in the Heights. Grab a book or your Kindle, and relax in the shade along this delightful drive.

By Joe S |

One of the nicest places in Peoria. Many beautiful houses along this scenic drive with several areas to pull over and take a view, and what a view it is. Fall is a great time to visit when the 🍁 start changing.

By Lori L |

The best time to experience Grand View Drive is in the fall. The colors are amazing! There are several places to view and convenient pull-off points to drink in the beauty. You can also hike the park. The homes along Grand View are amazing too! Picnic tables at the top for a nice lunch!

By Anne W |

So beautiful. You can walk the sidewalk or you can drive along the road but either way it is wonderful to see. In winter you can see the houses in the hillside. In spring the trees are filling out. In summer the boats are on the river and barge traffic. In fall the trees are so many different colors. There are no bad seasons. In October, the castle is spectacular on Halloween. It was decorated as Wizard of Oz last year. Fun!

By Jane M |

We took a trip to Grand View Drive and thoroughly enjoyed the views and beautiful homes. We took some great pictures.

By Craig Trevor W |

I took this drive after dinner. There are spots to park and see the river or the sunset. I truly enjoyed taking this drive.

By TLER021213 |

We love driving along Grandview Drive or pulling over to look at the view. Usually do this on the weekend on our way to dinner in Peoria Heights.

By DBLasaine |

If you like great views of rivers, trees, mountailns and nature in general, you MUST drive, run or walk Grand View Drive. It's name says it all. Speticular views, very quiet and restful; relax and contemplate here. You can park and even eat your lunch at a picnic table.

By jrhauptly |

Beautiful place to view the whole Illinois river valley, to sit on the park benches and know that you are looking at one of Gods' magnificent gifts to us. Beautiful all seasons, especially the fall with all of the colors.

By JessaOlson |

Super pretty drive around Peoria. I highly recommend it to any way passing through Peoria or that lives here.

By Linda L H |

Took this short drive which winds up along the river and allows several spots to see for miles and enjoy river views. This drive is on National Historic Registrar. We also saw many beautiful large historic homes along the drive. Well worth the time.

By kb8e |

The best time to visit is in the fall when the leaves have begun to turn. There are places to picnic or just sit quietly and enjoy the view of the river valley from the hilltop.

By David L |

Lived in Peoria for years. The drive is awesome in the spring with trees and flowers coming awake. Well worth the drive

By George C |

You can access this drive from Prospect in Peoria heights, or from Adams St. just north of the McCluggage Bridge at the bottom of a steep and windy road the climbs to the top. I like to park at the bottom at a little pavilion at the entrance, then walk up to hill and along Grand View Drive to the other end. Very good exercise.

By TripBuddy278 |

The drive (2.5 miles) has historic beautiful homes on one side of the street and the other side spectacular views of the Illinois River. Areas where you can pull your car over and get out and sit on a bench and enjoy the view. We went in the summer but I can image the fall when the leaves change color views would be even better. Some walking trails. Take time to enjoy this unique experience.

By Bob C |

Quite often, when we have friends in Peoria from other parts of the
USA and from the Chicago area, we take them to Grand View Drive.
The Drive is locally known for it's beautiful views of the Illinois
River and river valley. Flanked on the River side with many beautiful
and colorful trees, and on the opposite side of the Drive some of
the nicest homes in the Peoria area! Fall is a great time to view the
beautiful foliage and the boaters still enjoying the river. A great
way to spend an hour or more in Peoria!

By Funtogo460 |

There isn't any time of year that this ride is not beautiful. The Fall was spectacular. Maybe better than some others. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy the view. We are fortunate to have such a neat drive and beautiful homes along the way, OH YES and the view!!!!

By db7477 |

We had a little extra time and took advantage of the recommendation. The drive was as billed: great views, stately homes and a Castle (with Gargoyles guarding the driveway) no less. It was a beautiful day - just wish that we had time to walk it.

By Dave B |

President Teddy Roosevelt said that when he was in Peoria. This is a linear park that is a beautiful drive in all seasons. In the spring and fall it is an especially beautiful walk as well. Hihgly recommended for photographers and nature lovers. Pet friendly. Lots of runners as well.

By C S |

Have gone there many times. Beautiful Homes. Looks like a nice place to live, Beautiful in the fall of the year. Looking over the Illinois River.

By Patricia W |

Grandview Drive is one of the most beautiful, peace places to go in the fall when leaves are changing

By David O |

I was fortunate to have a few minutes free during a business thip and took some "me" time. The drive was beautiful. Stunning fall foliage. Very relaxing, A must see in the fall.

By Cary C |

my son drove me up to Peoria Heights the day after the snow fall and it was truly amazing. with the snow on the trees and the ground just made the views so much better.

Grand View drive is a great place for a nice, relaxing stroll. Beautiful views of the IL River. There are picnic tables along the way so stop, have lunch, and enjoy the view.

By dwkfoster |

Great views of the Illinois river, and picnic tables everywhere.

Don't miss the Castle. It is a copy of a real French Castle from Northern France

By IllinoisBombom |

Beautiful part of Peoria history. The drive is filled with historic mansions from another era. The view of the Illinois river is spectacular, especially in the fall when all the trees are in their finest colors.

By JeffS |

Spring, summer, fall or winter - the view along Grand View Drive is spectacular. Allegedly, a President drove along the drive and pronounced it a "grand view." True or now, it is s spectacular location to view the beauty of the Illinois River bluffs. As part of the Peoria Park District, several viewing points are available to sit, picnic, chat or just enjoy the view. If you are in the area, regardless of the season it is worth the drive and a great place to have a picnic!

By Michael R |

Wonderful view of the Illinois River and beautiful houses. Great scenic drive with places to park and enjoy the view.

By Elizabeth B |

Stopped in Peoria for dinner on our way home to St. Louis. Was a quick beautiful drive with great views of the river and beautiful homes. For the drive, there are two entrances. Once in the park, if you stay on North Grand View Drive you will be on the most direct route. So glad we made this little detour.

By Allan C |

I've enjoyed this drive for many decades. Can be a very romantic location. Be sure to bring a camera. or drone!

By Michael J |

I grew up in East Peoria, IL. I lived there until my late 20's. I now live in Canada, but come back to visit my family once a year or so. Grand View Drive is always a must stop to drive down on every visit home. You really can't beat this drive in most places. The houses, the views...always spectacular. If you are in Peoria, please take a moment to take a drive down this wonderful road. You really shouldn't be disappointed.

By Mike T |

I live watching the trees change color here. The parks are almost always peaceful. One great place to "decompress"

By Roger B |

I had scene & read on the internet that this was a beautiful road to drive on. Well it didn't disappoint, first there was the trees, then the wonderful looking houses, then came some views of the Illinois River. Simply awesome, the one bad thing was that it was a little cloudy (but that's no reflection on the drive). We still got some really nice pictures of the river and the scenery.

By Sam Wagner |

President Roosevelt called it the world’s most beautiful drive with its wide and sweeping vista, overlooking Pimitui, sometimes called fat lake by interpretation of the Peoria Indian name.

By Becca W |

There are few things better to look at here in Peoria. The views of the river and the foliage around the river are beautiful. The houses are something to see, too, since it's the richest part of Peoria. Beautiful trails to walk around as well.

By schwach3 |

This short drive is always great on a sunny fall day. weekends are usually crowded with people hanging out. Can't grill, but table are available to have a snack.
you have a great view of the river. The drive is situated in a very desirable area.

By Klaw29 |

Historic homes, beautiful views of Illinois River Valley. Gorgeous drive and walk! Picnic tables and viewing areas have been set up by park district.

The properties along this two and a half mile drive are amazing and some real quirky ones stand out. The views are wonderful too. Well worth half an hour or more if your time

In a visit to the area in 1910, then President Theodore Roosevelt declared that Grandview Drive in Peoria Heights was "the world's most beautiful drive." Well, we've driven along Grandview Drive and marveled at its 2 1/2-mile vistas overlooking the Illinois River. And we've also driven through Monument Valley on the Utah/Arizona border. And we've viewed the Grand Canyon from the South Rim and the North Rim. Maybe Roosevelt didn't go that far west. Make no mistake. Grandview Drive is beautiful. You'd love to live in one of the stately mansions located on the bluffs in Peoria Heights, virtually unchanged since Native Americans first settled in the region centuries ago . On a clear day, you can see 30 miles of the scenic Illinois River valley, parts of Woodford, Tazewell and Marshall counties. Grandview Drive stretches from Prospect Road to Illinois Route 29 and is a winding road with several sight-seeing areas. The residential area on the west side of the drive, opposite the river, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. In the spring and summer and fall, it is a wonderful place to take a leisurely drive or take a walk or ride a bicycle or sit in the shade and observe the boats and barge traffic on the river. One other historic note: Grandview Drive is near the birthplace of the first gasoline-powered car in America, the Duryea automobile, built in 1893 by Charles Duryea.

My favorite place in Peoria. Views of the Illinois River valley are incredible in every season! Great place to walk, and picnic tables make for lovely place to relax and enjoy a meal with friends and/or family.

By RockyMountainsFan |

Often enjoy taking this detour to get across the river from Peoria Heights. One side of the car has a most spectacular view of the Illinois River, the other has fabulous homes, old and new, to see. A must do if you are in Peoria, Illinois

By Mu-0487 |

Go for a drive or take a hike! it is really a pleasant view all along. Recommended by a friend was a good one.

By L8009OZlinda |

Talk a walk with your dog in the fall. See the river and the rich houses. Bring a camera for photos with the river view as background

By Audrey M |

I live in Peoria Heights and recently took my friend from Texas on this scenic drive. I relayed the story to her of how Eisenhower how stated that this was the world's most beautiful drive and that is how our one of local television stations got their call letters - WMBD. She absolutely loved the drive, the scenery (especially the big trees and river view) and the gorgeous homes and completely agreed with his description. There are always many people along the drive having a picnic, relaxing or taking pictures. A must-see if you are in the Peoria area.

By Dennis H |

Anyone who comes to the Peoria area must take this drive. Any time of year the views are beautiful. President Roosevelt said he thought it was "the world's most beautiful drive".

By Seasondtravler |

a wonderful view of the Illinois river, which Theodore Roosevelt called the most beautiful river in the world

By Star2014 |

Overlooking the Illinois River and Valley, this scenic drive has gorgeous homes and beautiful Park District land with picnic areas and viewing areas. Walking distance to the charming area of Peoria Heights for shopping and restaurants.

By pamelaw799 |

The views of the lake are beautiful. The leaves are not quite at their peak but it was certainly a beautiful drive. In addition you get to see all of the beautiful mansion like properties that line the drive. There are several scenic overlook areas for picture taking and there is a walking trail as well.

By briansE8525ZI |

It's a nice drive that doesn't take much time to check out. Nothing too exciting if you've driven through a nice neighborhood before. Relative to the area though, it was nice to see. It was recommended to me by locals too.

I took my wife now of 30 years in a borrowed Cadillac Allante from Gary Uftring.
After dinner in the cattlemen’s car at the river station restaurant in Peoria, I got down on one knee and asked her to ignore her father and marry me.
Gary Uftring‘s dealerships are now far and wide because of the kindness he shows people, The River station restaurant is long gone, the Cadillac Allante turned out to be an electronic nightmare, but my wife gets sweeter with time.
As Teddy Roosevelt named it “the worlds most beautiful drive”.

The drive was very serene and peaceful. We stopped and took in the view. The homes were beautiful as well.

By jfadds |

Obviously the place to live if you have the cash

A stunning array of homes on view with river views across the street

There are public places with benches and tables along the way- nice on a sunny day

By Winkelcopes |

Quick drive but beautiful views of the water and amazing houses along the drive. It was raining so we didn’t get out would like to try this and do the trails another time.

By travelors20152016 |

Beautiful overlook of the Illinois River, with several picnic spots to enjoy a lunch during the workday, or to bring the family. Also, many older large beautiful homes along the drive.

By Kyle W |

You can do Grand View Drive in a few different ways: drive it, walk it, or stop at a park/ viewing area. Aside form the overlook of the river and trees there are a lot of interesting houses. It's worth checking out if you are around Peoria, but keep in mind it's more like a residential zone than a tour stop so you are not going to find much other than the view here until you get to Peoria Heights that has some nice restaurants/ shops.

By rcr1rcr1 |

If you're in the area, I suggest that you not leave until you have driven this wonderful drive at least once. It is said that Teddy Roosevelt dubbed it "The World's Most Beautiful Drive", Of course, in the Fall the changing colors of the leaves is breathtaking. Don't miss it.

By taxed1 |

Fun for all ages! Take a ride on the elevator up to the top of Peoria Heights Water Tower Observation Deck. You'll be treated to a beautiful view of the Illinois River. This bird's eye view of Grand View Drive is very spectacular when the leaves put on their fall colors.

By Jill D |

Looking for a relaxing drive meandering along the Illinois River? And, seeing some of the most beautiful and restored homes from an era gone? This is the drive, walk and stop for you and anyone from out of town to see and admire.

By IndianTraveller56003 |

A drive down Grandview is a spectacular experience. The views of the river are awesome. The houses along the drive are very opulent and represent a wide range of architectural styles and history. This is a great way to get a first-hand experience of Peoria at its finest.

By Mountainman827 |

Great short drive. See beautiful houses from 100 years ago. Great views of the river as the street drives along the top of the hill.

By Patricia |

This Mature Treed Drive isn't really all that long but it has some of the most magnificent homes and views of the Illinois River etc that you could ever experience. You won't be disappointed!

By Allison H |

Grab picnic things and head up to Grand View Drive. There are plenty of picnic tables & benches to eat and enjoy the view of the Illinois River. You can take a nice stroll on the sidewalk and chat to the others along the way. Lots of people walking, running, biking. So peaceful & amazing we have this right in Peoria! Go!

By William G |

This amazing-SCENIC drive runs off Prospect to Galena Road. Some of the best-largest-financially extravagant, lush home and MANSIONS in the surrounding city. ALL With views of the Illinois River. Thsi is a MUST see if you have time in Peoria!

By 826cathyr |

Best view of the Illinois River, especially in the fall when the leaves are glorious colors! There are areas to pull over and admire the scenery and take photos. If you start the drive from IL Hwy 29 and finish in Peoria Heights you can stop for a great cup of coffee or tea from Leaves and Beans, stroll the shops or get a good meal on Prospect Rd or at Junction City.

By Greg R |

This drive was incredible! It was a nice change from all the Farmland towns that are all over this entire greater Peoria area. This drive is slow and that is just the way it should be. Take in the majestic views of Upper Peoria Lake! There are plenty of overlooks to pull over and snap a great picture. Plenty of people biking and running, and walking the dogs here. My only complaint is the drive is too short. My drive ended at Tower Park. There is another nice park to go to along this route and it has plenty of amenities for the children and adults. It is appropriately named Grandview Drive Park. This is one of those drives that will not only take your breath away because of the views, but if you love HUGE, majestic houses then you will be in heaven. Also, the Country Club of Peoria is on this drive as well. If this view is this amazing in the winter time, I can't imagine how beautiful it is in the fall or spring time. If you are in the area, you definitely need to go on this drive! Amazing!!

By Russ P |

Was a very scenic route, just outside of downtown Peoria. Lots of pull offs and overlooks to stop at. Worth the detour

By Jim W |

Was a nice drive that was not busy, we felt comfortable stopping along the way. The river views are nice on the one side with a variety of housing on the other. We went south to north which lead us to the observation, water tower, one of its kind in Peoria Heights. My wife doesn't like elevators, but this tower has an outside glass one she could do. Stop and enjoy.

By covingtonal |

Grand View Drive in Peoria delivers some of the most beautiful valley vistas you will see anywhere. Visitors I have taken to the "Drive" are amazed that our midwestern town could have such a treasure. President Teddy Roosevelt visited Peoria and his description was " Worlds Most Beautiful Drive" . Those initials, WMBD, were taken by a local television/radio station many years later. Very near the Drive is a tower in Peoria Heights that provides spectacular views of the river valley.

By Bob R (mobility impaired) |

Taking a trip up Grand View Drive is relaxing, driving, bicycle, or walking will work. Plenty of places to just sit and view at the river. This area is part of the Peoria Park district and available to the public. It is accessible from two different directions, off of Prospect Road in Peoria Heights, near the Tower or from Route 29, near the Highway 150 interchange. It is a steep hill from the bottom (off of route 29), good hard walk.

President Roosevelt said "Worlds most beautiful drive". Just to sit and do nothing other than look at the river is something, but the homes on the south side of the street are magnificent. At Christmas, the houses are really decorated!

There are places to park as well as benches and tables. Great place to bring a sack lunch and eat.

One of the best places to take a drive in Peoria look at tow boats going up and down the river pretty in the fall great place to take a walk you might see some turkeys dear now and then one of the best places to go in Peoria to relax

By cathy s |

take the time to drive down Grand View all the way to see some very impressive architecture. It is great to see how the other half lives and be glad you don't have to clean those massive estates. We were there in June so lots of leaves on the trees which kept you from seeing much of the river, but still well worth it.

By karent488 |

Spectacular views of the Illinois River, Lake Peoria and wildlife. I spend some very peaceful time at the lookouts just taking the in the beauty.

By WStatesTraveler |

Yes, there are some nice views of the Illinois River Valley, but they are not very special. It is unclear where the drive starts (and ends). I decided to park my car and to walk along N Grandview Dr. This did not change my impression of what Grand View Drive has to offer. I was certainly impressed by the large houses built along this road. The variation in architecture is stunning and the houses are nice to look at.

By Pippadude |

I drive on this road whenever I am in the neighborhood. It is worth going out of your way if you have never driven along it. There are many views that have probably not changed much for hundreds of years. There are places to stop and have a picnic. I have many times picked up a carry-out meal and eaten at one of the picnic tables. It is beautiful at all times of the year.

By marywJ9663HR |

What a beautiful view while we walked. A lot of benches along the way to take in the beauty! Definitely a must in all seasons.

By carol s |

ways a pleasure to drive through there with the beautiful homes and the scenery of the area and the river, especially in the fall.

By TRH62160 |

I was not expecting too much from this scenic drive, but I was wrong. The roadway took you up to a residential area that was occupied with some truly large and beautiful older homes of quite large stature (mansions). They all had one thing in common; across this roadway was a beautiful, unobstructed front window, yard view of the valley and Illinois River below! We took the ride each day. My only wish is that we had traveled it in the fall to see all of the leaves and their many colors!

By Jennifer P |

It's been called "world's most beautiful drive" for a reason! It's pretty any time of year but it's especially breathtaking in fall. You'll have incredible views of the river.

By LeRoyGe |

Always a relaxing beautiful drive looking out over the Illinois River. No wonder some call this five mile or so "The Worlds Most Beautiful Drive" from the stately homes to the river valley expanses.

By June O |

We drove from one end of the grand view drive to the other. It's a also a nice place to go for a walk. Some places have a side walk. There are some picnic table where you can seat and admire the view. It's a very nice place to visit.

By Erick Scarpone |

Its a nice view but nothing to great about it, it takes like 10min to drive thru it, get down take a picture and that's it...is somewhat boring.

By Autumn Lake |

We stopped here on our way through on a road trip. The view was breathtaking and the houses along the road were just as lovely to look at. There is also a park to visit, and extra parking spaces along the road to stop and take photos.

By LONNY B |

Worlds Most Beautiful Drive!!! It totally is worth it to see on a sunny day!! Even some areas to pull off and have a picnic!!

By m0m0f6b0ys |

It was a nice drive with a couple of places to pull over and view the river. We were driving slowly to admire the houses and a couple of people pulled up behind us, annoyed.

By 123qwe |

Grand View Drive in Peoria, IL. was once called The Worlds Most Beautiful Drive by a former president years ago and I really can't disagree with that. When it is a beautiful day, my wife and my favorite thing to do is go to our favorite place to get a chilli dog and take lunch to Grand View Drive where we eat at one of their picnic tables while we enjoy the view.

By Marietta H |

Put 3210 Grandview Drive, Peoria, to get to the start of the driving trail. It was a gorgeous drive with amazing views and gorgeous houses to drool over. Along the almost two mile drive, there are several pullouts where you can park and walk or just admire the view for a few minutes. There are benches and picnic tables all along the drive.

By Margret Z |

Very cute short drive weird how nice the houses are in this area as soon as you get out of that area clear class change

By Layne S |

I recommend any out of town guests to drive on Grand View and enjoy the beautiful views of the river valley. The trail is also enjoyable.

By Libby B |

President Roosevelt visited this drive many years ago and said it is the 'WMBD" The world's most beautiful drive! The colors in fall are magnificent. In winter, look for the bald eagles soring over the bluffs and river. Spring and summer enjoy the view and the breezes. It is truly the "WMBD"!

By Uli S |

Drove along the Grand View Drive.
Weather wasn’t sunny, we still enjoyed the view. You’ll drive by and see some mansions to one side and the river to the other.
There is also a 1 mile path through the woods. We just walked a small part of it. Would like to try the whole path sometime.

By gasjoliet |

Sunday July 3rd was an overcast, cloudy day. Grand View Drive was a perfect destination for awesome views of the Illinois River. Gray skies overhead, an occasional drizzle kept the crowds away! Every lookout gave us a full advantage to pull over to admire the views from high above. The gorgeous homes along the drive were decorated with flags & bunting for the July 4th holiday. Very enjoyable hour spent appreciating this historic drive.

By tquinn3 |

Grand View Drive is a winding, hilly road that passes by many stately homes, and is maintained by the Peoria Park District. There are cutouts where you can have lunch, and points where you'll see really fantastic views of the Illinois River valley and the surrounding forests. The fall colors can be spectacular (the color quality will depend on the weather over the summer). In 1910, President Theodore Roosevelt declared that Grandview Driver was "the world's most beautiful drive."

By Candy L |

The drive along Grand View is always fun. The houses that lined the drive are wonderful to view. But the best views are looking towards the Illinois River...and especially in the fall of the year! Breathtaking! A great place to take a picnic and spend a cool autumn day! Summer picnics are fun, too! Actually, any season is a beautiful time of year to drive along this winding road!

By Montyd72 |

Grandview drive is a nice 5 minute drive winding up the bluff. There are numerous beautiful homes and several nice places to pull off and take in the view of the river. Good place for a picnic.

By Justine |

I'm just the kind of person who loves going for rides and checking the scenery and going to look at beautiful houses and this was a fantastic ride! There's a great charm to this neighborhood even though you can tell it's a big touristy attraction. The view is amazing. Would be an awesome spot to just go and relax or picnic on a date.

By Josh C |

Having grown up with grand view drive you do take it for granted. The views of the Illinois River Valley are definitely something to see. I’ve seen other views over the Mississippi that were enjoyable but not quite the same. The distance you can see is a big difference. It is a great place to have a picnic and tables are provided at various spots along the road. If you are visiting Peoria it’s worth a drive down grand view drive. If it’s good enough for Teddy Roosevelt to call the worlds most beautiful drive then it’s certainly worth a look.

By kimski4 |

Nice to do up and view the city and house's Christmas lights. However don't go on a snowy day. Drive is down right scary when it's slick.

By 437jamesk |

If you are in Peoria a must see id "the worlds most beutiful drive" and it is- try to catch it when the leaves change

By SFCRambo |

We drove around the whole area to look at the nave's and see the people with their mad look like I am an invader and not be there but the drive along the overlook areas were breath taking. Also taking in the different colors the trees were changing to.

By twt81 |

Needs to be seen in every season, as it changes for each one. A lovely drive, especially in the fall and winter.

By Paul Nelson |

High above the Illinois River, which I had never seen before. Lovely houses and magnificent views. Well worth the visit.

By IL_Jeff |

It is always beautiful along the drive - in any season!!! However, make sure to visit it when the trees start to turn colors - It is amazing!!!

By Chellee T |

Our friends live on this street so we drove this road many times while visiting with them. I never get tired of seeing all the beautiful homes, especially the castle one, but it is just as pretty on the other side. There a few benches where you can sit if you choose to walk the road instead of drive it. We saw lots of wild turkeys every day but we didn't see any deer this time around. Definitely worth at least one drive through.

By N163EAvalerieh |

Beautiful views and a great walking trail. Wear good shoes- this isn’t just a simple stroll- there are some hills that take a little cardio effort. Lots of foliage, great views and wildlife. Super date location!!

By Cary C |

drove thru here the other day and it is still as beautiful as it was when i was a teenager. just outstanding views

By April |

In Peoria for the first time while attending my daughters softball tournament. We wanted to drive through to see the fall trees and homes! Beautiful🧡⛵️🍁☀️

By raybyerley |

I couldn't find this already listed on Trip Advisor, but it is right by the Grand view Drive and has really grand views.

It cost a whopping $2 to ride the elevator up to the observation decks of the water tower.

It was a beautiful day and we could see for miles. There are brass "plaques" around the deck letting you know how far it is to places around the globe, I pasted in 3 I took toward London, Oslo, and our home - New Orleans.

If there is any breeze on the ground, take off or hold onto your hat up on the observation decks - it is windier up there.

By taffygirlMokena_IL |

This is a beautiful area. The houses are from a time gone by.
The only issue I gad, was there's nowhere to safely park to take pictures. You have to pull over on the side of the road..

By DanMarCo |

We've been visiting family in Peoria for 26 years & never heard of Grand View Drive. My husband was looking for something to do and saw this so we went.

It is a beautiful drive with views of the river on one side and large homes on the other. T. Roosevelt said it was "The Worlds Most Beautiful Drive", the local tv station used that to come up with their name...WMBD. Go see it, you will like it, even better, park your car and walk down the sidewalk.

By Donna P |

We traveled this road to get some group pics and the views did not disappoint! I would love to see it in the fall! I will definitely be back!

By Irina |

It's hard to describe Grand View Drive in words -- you have to see and admire it! No wonder, it's been called the World's Most Beautiful Drive. The view from the top of the hill upon the Illinois River and across it is spectacular, in any time of the year. The grounds are very well taken care of, as well as picnic areas, and parking places. Many benches to sit and relax and enjoy the scenery. Grand View Drive attracts both local public and tourists, of course. It is extremely popular with walkers, runners, joggers, dog-walkers -- basically with anybody who wants to have a good healthy time! One of the most beautiful (and safe) places in the area.

By Ronnie H |

Beautiful drive. Fun homes and beautiful view! Starts at Prospect. Don't miss Junction city shops. Nice.

By Anthony H |

We had family pictures taken here and it turned out amazing. The scenery is beautiful especially during the fall.

By Moti L |

It’s a nice drive with a few spots to stop. Most people usually leave their cars and walk this path. Either way you go, you will have different views of the river, and be able to see cool old school homes. I’m not very familiar with Peoria but this was a really nice place to visit, and beautiful drive.

By Steveh3Texas |

This drive overlooks the Illinois River. The drive is lined with historic and large homes. Peoria CC is located at the end. WMBD, not sure it's that good.

By Paula1964_13 |

Grandview Drive is awesome year 'round but especially beautiful in the fall.
A person would have to make several trips from top to bottom of the drive to be able to take in all of the beautiful views overlooking the Illinois River on one side and the gorgeous stately homes on the other side.

By david_hance_iowa |

I started at the entrance and expected to be driving through a big river bluff in a city park. I did for about a mile. Then I continue on the same street but large ornate o,d mansions appeared in the left hand side and periodic clearings of trees made it possible to see breath taking views of a deep river valley with large expanses if water in the Illi out River. It was a fabulous 3 miles long slow drive.

By Gail L |

This is such a beautiful place all year, but in the Fall it is spectacular, it takes your breath away.

By Sara F |

Just truly beautiful for central Illinois. A place for everyone to enjoy a nice walk or run, or just to sit at a picnic table and take pictures.

By Mike M |

Spring and Fall are the best times for this beautiful drive. The views of the IL River and wonderful before the leaves are on the trees. Then in the Fall, the colors are fantastic!

By TRSparenberg |

Though I don't think it's the Worlds Most Beautiful Drive, it's pretty Scenic none the less. A popular place for locals to jog and get photos taken. Worth a look if you are new and close by or you want a Peoria "Check in the box"

By jennifersN6023MI |

Grandview Drive was named the World's Most Beautiful Drive for a reason!! I grew up right off Grandview Drive so it is like home to me! Great to take a picnic or just go sit and enjoy the view! Beautiful homes and scenery!!

By Famontherun |

This is a short but very picturesque drive. There are lovely views of the lake with places to pull off, sit and take in the scenery. The homes are gorgeous...be on the look out for one that is modeled after a castle with turrets, a small bridge and large dragons out front; what a place! We even ran into a flock of wild turkeys. Be sure to hit Emo's for some yummy ice cream when done.

By RamblingBadger |

Wow- what a view out over the river. This a go to drive when we have friends visiting in Peoria. Also look across the street to notice the great old mansions.

By Sharon B |

Beautiful homes and scenic views. I wouldn't want to live there. Too many people enjoying my views. A bus load of senior citizens enjoying a picnic lunch would not be what I would want to see everyday.

By Gandalf Greyhame |

This is all about the view! The road runs along the bluff of the river, providing a grand view of the river and the bluff across it. In the fall, when the trees turn, the colors are often dramatic. In the Christmas season, many of the houses are beautifully decorated. Any time of the year, there is the view of the trees and the water, and the road has frequent areas for pulling off and just enjoying the view--many of which are provided with picnic tables.

By Kristen W |

Beautiful view. Many pull offs where you can picnic, take pictures of the Illinois River Valley, or just take a walk.

By Dave B |

We used to walk on Grandview drive many times a week. Great views in each season. Plenty of places to pull off and park. Lots of benches to sit on or even the grass in some areas.

By windyy |

as Teddy Rosevelt so named "worlds most beautiful drive" offers a extensive view of the Illinois River Valley especially to the North. And the trees lining the walk are excellent.

By Daveanew |

Beautiful drive in Peoria no matter the time of year. Gorgeous homes, vistas of the Illinois River and picnic areas,

By 1979jeffreyj |

Well-maintained trails that included sections perfect for the novice walker/hiker, and graduating all-the-way to the not-so-timid serious hiking enthusiasts ~ a wonderful day of exercise and sightseeing!

By van728 |

I would recommend that people coming to Peoria or going through Peoria take this drive. Not only is it beautiful, the neighborhood is gorgeous and if one likes old and unique houses, it’s worth it.

By Mike M |

there is a plaque on drive saying that Theodore Roosevelt said is was one of most impressive views he had ever seen.. and I although not as well traveled as him would agree

By d e |

You can walk, bike, or a slow drive for the best view the Illinois river can give you. Fall and spring are the best times to get great scenery, but summer and winter have their moments.

By Dennis Y |

Teddy Roosevelt thought it was beautiful,, and I do too! There are parking areas and benches to help take in the view. We like to walk/hike along the upper drive. I took a car load full of company brass for look. All were impressed.

By Rena424 |

I would have my parents visit and we would go on the drive here. I have even taken my friends when they have visited. I'm hoping to take my fiance with me soon when we go visit campus... it will be his first time seeing where I went to school. I love the houses and the views!!

By monicacN2080AI |

This drive is definitely worth it. There are spectacular homes and tremendous views. Christmas time is exceptional with all of the lights.

By Mehul_Desai |

Gem of a place in Peoria.
Have been visiting Peoria every week since 2 years, for work.

Found this place recently and now I am thinking, what took me so long to drive here.

It’s a short 2-3 mile drive. Has an awesome view of the river and of course lots of greenery and beautiful homes.

There are picnic tables and benches along the drive.

By Vytalstatistix |

If you are in Peoria, this is one of the best places to spend some time. Amazing views of the river on one side and magnificent houses on the other side. During my stay in Peoria, I would just take a book and head out here to sit on one of the benches and read. I am sure during that may be a challenge during winter but it is a great way to spend some time during summer. If you are up for some up-hill running, this would be a great place.

By cedric09 |

If you picture Peoria as a landscape of deserted factories along the riverfront and empty storefronts downtown, a trip to Grand View Drive will open your eyes. Endless vistas of the tree lined Illinois River on one side are balanced by grandiose mansions on the other. While steelworkers and dockhands toiled downtown, the wealthy built ostentatious villas high on the hillside above. Take time to walk along the paths and enjoy picnic tables with million dollar views. Well worth a detour.

By Jason M |

The world's most beautiful drive, according to some... is definitely an exaggeration. But for the flatlands of Illinois, this is some of the prettiest overlooks of the river that you'll find.

By freckles53 |

This 2 + mile ride is a magnificent view of the Illinois river and surrounding landscapes. Before or after, stop for a bite at one of the excellent restaurants in Peoria Heights.

By Gary |

Worlds most beautiful drive. I love this area. The only problem with it is that everyone else loves it too. If you are not from Peoria and you are visiting this would be an epic place to go visit.

By Mokenavince-11 |

This is a winding with a great view. It,s a nice relief to get off the interstate roads. Just beautiful escape.

By mickeywu |

This is a long drive overlooking the river, with homes on each side. Teddy Roosevelt once stated that this was the most beautiful drive in America. It is gorgeous. Take time to go slowly in your car or pick or picnic table or bench to overlook the river. Very serene.

By P E |

Oh this was such a lovely drive! So beautiful.. every step of the way. Plenty of opportunities to get out, sit and enjoy the grandeur.

By Have Camera, Will Travel |

Starting on the south end of the road, there are some 180 degree corners as you climb the hill. It was a cool little drive and you didn't need to speed to get a good sensation from your car. Once I was at the top, I pulled off at one of the parks and walked around. Being summer, the weeds and trees were blocking some of the views, which was a bummer. There were 2-3 other pull of areas that I went to and had the same issue. It is pretty and you can see the river, but it would be better in the fall or spring.

By local_diner27 |

Grand View Drive has always been a place to take a scenic drive to see the colors of the season or the beautiful landscaping. A quiet walk to reconnect with nature, but still feel like you aren't in the woods. On one side there is green space, trees and the river while the other side boasts beautiful dream homes.

By markparshall |

The view is great I love to go there in the fall when the leaves are turning. A former President called it a million dollar view.

By Marguerite a |

This is a lovely park with picnic tables and places to park. There are amazing houses that are varied in style and extravagant, with huge lawns, some dating to the early 20th centrury.

By E M |

We have driven along Grand View Drive hundreds of times and every time just gets better. We have walked portions of it and in the summer we have taken a picnic lunch or dinner to have at a couple of the rest areas along the drive.

By PJ P |

As a lifelong Peoria, IL, native, and having driven down Grandview Drive thousands of times, it still takes my breath away! From the lush green trees on the hillside to the Illinois River below, the view is just spectacular. In the fall, the colors are brilliant, and even during winter, the drive is beautiful. I can almost picture the Indians that used to live in our area surveying their lands from this vantage point. Grandview Drive, proclaimed "World's Most Beautiful Drive" by President Teddy Roosevelt, is something you don't want to miss.

Grand view Drive is a walk you won't want to miss. It overlooks the Illinois River and valley and every season offers a memorable view. It has been called the Worlds Most Beautiful Drive and it lives up to this title. There are beautiful large old homes on the drive and it is interesting to see the architecture and ornate lawns. The Peoria Country Club is on the drive and shares the beautiful view. If you cannot walk or bike it, be sure to drive along this road. You will not be disappointed.

Walked this drive when the leaves in the river valley were starting to turn. A sunny day and it was beautiful. The houses along the drive were a nice distraction as well.

We love the drive and the homes are so beautiful. It is a special place, having left Peoria some 25 years ago, spent a few hours traveling around seeing the sites... the Peoria Country Club. Bradley, Moss Ave....

Grandview drive is the highlight of Peoria!

It's always beautiful, offers many places to stop and relax, have a picnic, or just enjoy the view.

Highly recommended!!!!

Pack a picnic lunch and drive over to Grand View Drive. Beautiful viw of the river...but plz dont do it with high temps and humidity. Nice for a stroll, too.

By Wheels282 |

This is a free drive that is easy to get to. There are several places to pull off and walk on the sidewalk and grass. There were also several picnic tables. This is an area that I would love to see in all four seasons. I guess that is why there are some really big mansions built up here. There are several little restaurants that you can eat outside in the area (Peoria Heights). We found a nice little ice cream shop nearby.

You would never expect to find this location in central Illinois cornfields. Worlds Most Beautful Drive as described by a visiting president. Later became letters of local CBS television affiliate WMBD.

By rwgeiss |

The views from what Teddy Roosevelt called "the world's greatest drive" are outstanding at any season, but particularly spectacular in fall, when the colors rival those in New England and the Rockies.

I have been here in the Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter. Great Views of IL River no better View than here on Grandview Drive I Peoria Hieghts IL. Also the Homes on the Route. Park your Car Walk your Dog. Do you Jog? So Jog. You will like it here

By Learida |

Grandview Drive is a great place to go for a jog, a hike, a stroll or just to sit down on one of the benches and enjoy the view. The houses are charming and each of them is very unique. Nature is very expressive there and there is something to enjoy in every season. Very good for photo shoots.

The most beautiful drive in the city overlooking the Illinois River. Named from a quote from president FDR calling it " a grand view". A long and winding road perfect for walking, running or biking. You can a day of it and enjoy all the picnic areas and beautiful homes plus a country club. At the end of the drive is a wonderful park too.

By S J |

President Theodore Roosevelt is said to have proclaimed Grand View Drive as the "World's Most Beautiful Drive" during a 1910 visit. It does not disappoint! During the spring, summer, and fall, the trees and foliage are a sight to see while your walking along the path or just enjoying a quiet lunch. Definitely a must-see for the Peoria area!

By nikicox1974 |

Titled the worlds most beautiful drive. Multiple places from this drive give breathtaking views. Pack a lunch and make an afternoon of it. Peaceful and calm surroundings and beautiful homes are your landscape as you take in God's masterpiece.

Grand View Drive is a 2.5 mile drive up in the hills on the outskirts of Peoria. It is the setting for many gracious residences that would be right at home in Newport RI and other historic neighborhoods. We started at the bottom and drove up, past spectacular views and homes to the Country Club of Peoria at the top. As architecture fans, we couldn't think of a better way to spend a hour or two after dinner. This drive makes Peoria all but unforgettable.

Nice place to walk & overlook the river, lots of beautiful homes, there's a park with a playground & also volleyball court & baseball field

By JoAnn A |

Many picture opportunities especially in the fall. Nice walking path as well. There are some beautiful homes and landscaping. Picnic areas. Nice little drive!

By RebecMark |

Everyone should take advantage of this beautiful view. Completely awesome especially in fall. Tremendous view of colors.

By juliemH9001WM |

This is a great place to go get some exercise outdoors. The views are beautiful. There are benches along the way if you feel the need to stop and take a break. It gets really crowded in the fall but still worth the time to get out and take a stroll! And you get a good work out!!

By ChristineS6 |

No matter what the season you can always enjoy the breathtaking river bluff vistas over looking the Illinois River! It's no wonder President Roosevelt proclaimed Grandview Drive the World's Most Beautiful Drive in 1910.
Pack a Picnic and a book you will surely enjoy!

By Garris G |

This is a beautiful drive with places to pull off, picnic tables and benches. On one side of the road, at the bottom of the cliff, is the IL river. On the other side are huge mansions!

By Lkingery |

I was amazed with the breathtaking views on Grand view drive. the homes are amazing and there is even a castle.

By kmgIL |

This is an excellent area to go view the river and the homes other people can live in. I wonder what Grand View Drive was like back when the homes were new.

By jlglatz |

One of the most beautiful views of the river valley in central Illinois. Take a walk or a slow drive. Colors in the Fall are magnificent!!

By Mary R |

This drive is so wonderful, we drove it twice!! The fall is a spectacular time to go see all the colors Mother Nature shows off!!
Happened by chance to read of it, so glad we did!! It is a bucket list item!

By MeryMeCo |

We were in a Peoria for some shopping and took time out to drive down and then up Grandview Drive. The leaves were pretty and the views of the river are nice. Homes are pretty.

By Barb G |

This really is a beautiful drive, whether it be in a car or on a motorcycle. Plenty of pull off points to take in the stunning views. Pack a lunch and make a day of it!

Grand View Drive is undoubtedly a very beautiful site to visit and to enjoy -- it's 2,5 miles of smooth driving on a waving road, flanked by a lavish residential area in the west and fantastic panoramic views of the Illinois River in the east. Pedestrian walk runs parallel to the road, the top of the steep bank is very well maintained and nicely landscaped, and picnic areas with benches and tables add more comfort to the scenery of sheer beauty. The place is popular with walkers (including the pets), runners, bikers, people of all ages, really. Tourists usually visit Grand View Drive too, and take tons of photos!

Grand View Drive was constructed between 1910 ~ 1925, it is listed on the US National Register of Historic Places (1996), and the US President Theodore Roosevelt called it "the world's most beautiful drive". It most certainly is.

Love Grand View Drive!

If you want a place to see the beauty of the Illinois River Valley and stately mansions at the same time take a walk on Grand View Drive. It's peaceful and serene and the views are amazing. You have sidewalks so you don't have to walk on the street. Take food and water with you as there is none to be had there.

By Kevin Moloney |

I’m sure there are more scenic drives, but there’s not many places in Illinois that offer scenic river valley views, along with mansion like houses along it built to capture those views. Peoria Heights’ nearby downtown with Tower Park is decently walkable, along with bluff hiking trails that go down to Forest Park nature preserve.

By lay1201 |

Grandkids love cutting through Grand View so they can see view, especially pretty in the fall when leaves are changing

By Highwayfinds |

Friends took us on the drive, what a beautiful, peaceful view of the Illinois river. The homes were gorgeous and so well maintained, what a beautiful place to get to live. Enjoyed it throughly.

By GLars |

Nice drive overlooking the river. You can see all the homes you won't ever afford... Easy to find with GPS. Beautiful area even if you took away the homes.

By spratt66 |

Beautiful drive with great views, several pinic spots for lunch or coffee and just admire the location. The street is lined with historic manisons and several people just walk the drive and make a few hours of relaxation.

By Margaret C |

Take an evening stroll along Grandview Drive. Your might spot a deer, a flock or wild turkeys or seagulls circling overhead. Explore upper Grandivew Park or take the "secret path" where the sidewalk ends through the woods to the pavilion in the lower park. Stroll toward Prospect and explore the shops and restaurants in the Heights.

By annewW6092JJ |

Fantastic views. This is in an upscale neighborhood, so be mindful of the surrounding houses. Hiking trails will take you all the way down to Forest Park Nature Center, but they're steep. Limited Parking.

By Jeff9183 |

The winding road takes you up the embankment and boom you are at the top looking over the Illinois River. It is just beauty.

By smwiltz |

This is probably the most beautiful drive in the Peoria area. The view of the river down below is breathtaking. There are several places to get out and walk along the drive. Take a picnic and eat at any of the picnic tables. The homes along the drive are gorgeous to look at. My new husband and I just got married up there and I can’t wait for the pictures to come back. Worth an afternoon to stroll and relax!

By Yon Chul C |

Fall is a beautiful time in Illinois and if you are in Peoria, drive through Grandview is a must. The beautiful drive winds through majestic houses on top of bluff over looking the Illinois river. The leaves on the hills as you drive is stunning. There are few spots where you can pull over to enjoy the view and take pictures. It is no more than 10-15 minutes depending on how long you stay to enjoy the view. You won't find many drives in Illinois that will compare to this jewel.

By kjm65236 |

This has to be one of the most beautiful, romantic walks in IL or even US. Teddy Roosevelt gave it the name on his first visit. We live in Peoria and try to go at least 2 times a week - always different, changing with the time of day and seasons. It is on a wooded bluff with great panoramic views of the Illinois River Valley on one side and majestic homes on the other side. Down below the river widens into a series of lakes that almost always has barge traffic or sailboats. Most of the 2.5 mile drive has a sidewalk but a portion is a wide bark mulch path. There are many benches or picnic tables along the way to enjoy or rest. It's a fantastic place to watch people - couples, families, mom's with strollers, joggers, people walking their dog and sometimes a wedding party or prom couple taking advantage of the gorgeous backdrop for photos.

It's free! I'm sure it's even better in autumn, but we went in March and it was still amazing. Have your camera ready.

By Andrea T |

Such a pretty place to drive, walk or jog. A gem in Peoria and very fun to visit during the Christmas holidays when homeowners deck their houses with tons of lights and displays. One of my boys refers to the this as the drive with all those "chunks of fanciness" houses!

By N7334DVjerrys |

Theodore Roosevelt visited Peoria during his presidency and viewed the drive from the lower park up to Peoria Heights. During his ride, he called the place, “the world’s most beautiful drive.” After those famous words a radio station WMBD was named and has been broadcasting at AM1470 ever since. Check both out. Better yet, take a well stocked picnic basket and view the Illinois River from far above. Fall foliage is best, in my opinion.

By jollybc2 |

Driving on this road especially in the fall season will give you a very relaxing day. Admire the beauty of nature that God created for us and to feel so great about the different colors of leaves along the Illinois river. It's so cool, calm and the horizon is so wonderful that we can all enjoy.

By LostInTime |

This drive is up above the river. The views are great. There are places to picnic. And parking. And there are some really nice houses to also look at.

By James M |

Grand view Drive is a beautiful way to see the Illinois River Basin and lovely homes built along the route. Plan to drive slowly as it is mostly residential with areas to pull off the road, get out and view nature below you.

By nonofyourbuisness |

Took some friends from out of town and picked up some sack lunches. Found a picnic table and enjoyed the view A plesant time.

By Christine C |

Theodore Roosevelt named this paved road way back... stately homes... beautiful views, several areas to pull over for pics... take a picnic and tennies... there are paths to explore as well... directions... Prospect thru Peoria heights... you will see tower park on your right and Grandview is on the right. It terminates at 29 by the river.

By G4066KCjuliet |

Breathtaking view of the Illinois River on top of the Bluffs of Peoria Heights. Especially gorgeous when the leaves are changing in the fall and the spring, but every season is a beautiful vision of God's work.

By NorthernSpie |

Beautiful park and parkway. Lovely homes nearby but the view is not only for homeowners. Great place to picnic, paint, or, in my case, get proposed to! Can't miss for any tourist and never gets old for locals.

By Jerry D |

A drive through Grand View Drive should not be missed when in Peoria. Summer or Winter you will have great views of the Illinois River.

By JLKDix |

This was well worth driving down to view all the excellent vistas. Took the Riverfront Museums River City bus tour and this was included in the tour. Gorgeous views and unbelievable homes along the route.

By william w |

very nice drive thru some of the oldest home in one of the nice area of Peoria. Great views of the river and a nice area to take pictures and stop to eat lunch.

Driving in the state, you are drawn to the fact that everything is so flat. This drive was a wonderful view of fine homes, the river, and the hilly view, very nice

By Anna F |

This will give you a great view of the valley and the river. Go at night for the sunset! A great place to go and sit.

By Robbie A |

Great Scenery. My best friends parents live on this street. Has many scenic overlooks and many places to picnic.

By Julie C |

Beautiful short drive. Great view and some gorgeous homes. Especially the castle! You can stop and have a picnic. There are some walking trails as well.

By Frenchgoodtimes |

Perfect for a picnic in the height of fall "blooms"....gorgeous homes as a backdrop. Grandview Drive is a must for visitors....spring, summer, fall and winter. Take your pick.

By Rftstar |

Like others, the drive/walk was worth it. Many of the houses are incredible - some even look like a castle on a hilltop. The views over the Illinois River are beautfiul and well worth the drive.

Beautiful drive year around, a must when going thru peoria heights. Breath taking views over looking the Illinois river and beautiful houses. Great to park and walk as well. A photographers dream
