We enjoyed a great walk. There were also paddle boat and kayak rentals available. Also a small beach. It seemed like a popular bicycling area, too.

This lake is gorgeous. The colored bridge (the colored lights turn on at night) is wonderful. There are plenty of spaces to sit and enjoy yourself here. If you are looking for a park to have some solitude this is not the park to go to. There are almost always people at this park all day and all night until it closes. If you are exploring the Downtown Des Moines area I would definitely recommend taking a short trip out to this park-it is just beyond downtown DM

Note: construction on north side of grays lake park. Signage is not clear, but one can still bike and walk around the entire lake. Just some of the bike path is under reconstruction, and a detour around on the roadway is provided (but as I said, is not clear)
The bridge that goes over the south part of the lake is pretty neat. Path is guessing a mile to mile and a half long? But also connects up with the bike path on south side to water works or downtown (~2 miles) depending upon your preference.
This is boating, swimming?, docks, and a refreshment stand and bathrooms on the south side. Boating and refreshments were closed in early spring, but bathrooms were still open (thanks!)

Nice lake, clean water, nice running and biking trails. Parking lot was terribly dusty. Drought has hit the area hard.

Beautiful lake with nice parking and swimming facilities. A nice place for hangout with family/friends.

This is a great park, however in terms of privacy it's not too special because it's well known! So get there early and sit in a shady spot first and it's magical. However show up after it's been open for a while on a nice day and your unlikely to find parking or a decent picnic spot!

We traveled there in early August.I fell in love with it at the first glimpse of it for its tranquility.I love the trees and lake here. I hope I can visit it again!

I thoroughly enjoyed this lake and the surrounding trail. It's beautiful paved and easily accessible and perfectly flat. It goes around the lake and though it's short (i went around twice to compensate) it's lovely and worthwhile. You can also rent water activity equipment.

We went during the week and rented tandem bikes. It's a nice ride around the lake. The tandem bikes can be tricky. The check out and back in was smooth. Other people on the trail were enjoying the day too.

Gray's Lake is a nice park that appears to offer many amenities during the summer. Nice paved walking path which is good for walkers, runners, bikers and dog walkers. Saw many with fishing poles as well. It appears there is some construction in the park which made parking a bit difficult on the weekend. Hopefully, that will be resolved before full fledge summer is here.

This is a fabulous park that my wife and i visited most days to walk off the generous food portions we had at mealtimes!!
Really well kept park and lake with good facilities.
I particularly liked the directions for walking, keep to the right and do not stand on the path if stopping for photographs, which prevents congestion.

I was visiting a friend in Des Moines, (I'm from KC), and we decided a stroll outside was in order. The weather was divine and I admit, I was intrigued by the high number of Pokemon Go stops at this park. This park surprised me in every way. Joggers and dog walkers passed by peacefully, the small beach at the lake was being enjoyed by a few women and children. We eventually crossed the bridge and headed into what I imagine is the heart of the park. Walking and biking trails abounded in every direction from an adorable picnic area.
We chose to stroll over to the brewery that is a very short walk from the park.

We visited the Gray's Lake park because de Ironkid competition.
The place is beautiful, very clean and safe area.
Magnificent views, the lake was very clean and nice running and biking trails.
Great place to host this event!!!

Whether you're there to unwind, burn some stress, exercise, or just take in the scenery, Grays Lake is the perfect spot. Nice to take a date if you just want to take a walk and talk. It's beautiful.

I've always loved Gray's Lake. I grew up near it and have been going there since before the renovations happened. I remember in 5th grade hearing about how they were going to tear down the hotel? near it that had been flooded.
It's only gotten better since.
The bridge they put in is beautiful! Make sure to walk around it at night for the full lit-up effect.
I believe the trail is 2.5 miles around the lake and connects to other trails.

Brought a lunch and had a picnic next to the lake. It was June and the weather was perfect. Nice place to bring the kids and just let them run around.

We were in Iowa for a family wedding and wanted to get some exercise. This park has walking trails, a lake, picnic areas. It looks like they have events there too. It looked like you could rent paddle boats and bikes. If I lived here I'd visit often

we discovered this lake on the way to the airport and what a gem it is...the lake is beautiful and there is an almost 2 mile trail that runs around the lake...it is the perfect spot for a spring or summer walk....the trees provide nice cover and the green space is nicely kept...take a friend and enjoy

Dogs love it, the scenery is great and it is a blending of the masses. There are sail boat lesson, rentals, a beach, and a great waling trail with a view of the skyline.

Gray's Lake offers swimming, fishing, boating, walking, biking, and a view of the river that feels secluded & natural, not very urban. Yet it's ,iterally only blocks from downtown Des Moines. Refreshing, worth it, a wonderful addition to our city.

Great place to take a walk or just relax. I think it provides a great place to take pictures also. The walkway bridge is really cool at night with the lights and great for picture taking

The park surrounds a nice sized lake, it takes about 30-45 minutes to walk around it. The best part of the park are the eagles. If you leave the parking lot to the left, look across the river, and you will see a large nest in the trees across the river. While we were there we saw two eagles in the nest. One periodically left to gather food or nesting supplies I suppose. It was a treat I won't forget for a long time.

This is a great park. I have gotten lots of pictures taken at this park as well as had numerous sorority events there. They have a nice walking/running/biking trail if you just want to get some fresh air. Easy to get to and free parking.

We spent a few hours walking here on a Saturday morning and loved it. There were so many birds singing and the bridge is just beautiful! We even saw a nesting Bald Eagle, which my 9 year old loved. The walk was about 2 miles, which was a good amount for all of us. We noticed several connecting bike paths, so made plans to come back sometime on our bikes. Bathrooms were very clean and safe. Excellent outdoor area of Des Moines!

I will have to agree with what i heard about this park being the 3rd best park in the US. The location first is perfectly put where it is close to downtown, but not in downtown. It is exactly 1.98 miles around the main track that encircles Gray's lake. It has about every outlet you would want in a park from walking/rollerblading/biking on the trail to renting kayak, canoe, paddle boat, etc for an hourly rate on the lake. There is a bridge that lights up at night that exemplifies the beauty and there is a beach and playgrounds, etc.
I highly recommend this park as it is completely family oriented and user friendly as far as parks go.

I love walking here, it has a 2.2 K loop, along the river you can see birds, and eagles fishing and sometimes eaglets popping there heads out of a nest. It has a nice view of the down town sky line. In the spring and summer there are prairie wildflowers to enjoy as well. A safe place for seniors - great for families and our furry friends if they are leased. Walking at dusk is also very enjoyable

Great couple of mile walk around the lake. I never tire of this area, very pretty even after dark. Fairly safe, though I try not to walk alone. Plenty of parking east and west side of lake. Summer boat rentals and concession stand are a nice.

Gray's Lake Park is literally a gem in Des Moines. This was just a trip to relax and I spent about three and a half to four hours here just enjoying the park. It was amazing to see this park and I would highly recommend this to everyone who travels in Des Moines.

We visit here often. It is a beautiful walk especially about sunset. Worth stopping to see if you are passing through des moines in the evening.

Beautiful park, bridge is lit up at night. It is just shy of two mile around the lake, but can get a lot more mileage in running nearby on the trails and sidewalks. They also have kayaks and sailboats that you can rent. Excellent park.

Gray's Lake had been and still is one of our favorite walks.
The trip around the lake takes more than 5 minutes, so look at how long it is and determine how much time you need.
It looks like during the summer there are now Hobie Cat sailboats for rent.
The only time I've been on the lake is during winter, on foot.
I have sailed these before and they would be perfect on a lake of this size.

This 2 mile round trip loop of Gray's Lake Park is an awesome break with big trees, grass, a cool bridge and a 360 loop around the lake for a fun run. Go over at 5pm and see the locals relaxing and enjoying this beautiful space.

Gray's Lake is a great outdoor venue near downtown Des Moines. Linked to bike trails throughout down town and the Des Moines metro.

I grew up in Southern California. Des Moines is a great place to live and it’s come a LONG way since I moved here in 1995 or so. “Come a long way” means there are more things here now than 15 years ago, that I like to do/experience/buy, like healthy & yummy local foods.
I love walking/running around Gray’s Lake. It’s a nice substitute for the ocean. (oh, hush, you other ocean-lovers. I know, it’s not the same, but I’ll take what I can get here and be happy about it!) :)
The loop is 1.9 miles around, a great distance for me for a workout. I can loop it twice or thrice if I’m so-inclined. I like it best at night in the summer. Balmy, not too hot usually, and feels safe. Well-lit and plenty of other walkers and joggers for that safety in numbers factor. But hey, it’s Des Moines, and when you grow up in So Ca, it’s relatively safe anywhere here!
Come visit if you’re in town, or if you’re a local and you’ve never been, you’ll be glad!

Gray's Lake is a nice place to walk. The trail around the lake is a fun source for people watching as well as excersise. The bridge over the water is pleasant, there are varied landscapes, and it's a safe, comfortable path.

Was visiting the Des Moines Area and wanted to do some walking outside. Drove to Gray's Lake Park. What a beautiful place! Walked all the way around it and down in the sand by the beach area. Will definitely be back next time in the Des Moines area.

This small lake has a nice patio are to picnic as well as a bridge that crosses the southern half, making a nice walk. The outer trail is great to exercise. We have yet to try the boating options here, but you can rent small craft. It's very peaceful, despite being just south of the downtown area.

Beautiful trail around Gray's Lake, it's hard to believe it's in Des Moines! Families out for a walk, bicyclists, joggers, everyone.

The paved walking trail is 2.2 miles, and is a manageable walk in 45 minutes. Always enjoy the scenic view and is a pleasant way to get some exercise.

I can't say enough positive things about this place. I live downtown so I pop over here about every day. The loop around the lake is well maintained, the bridge adds a really cool feature at night, it is on the major bike tails that go though downtown, it's very clean, and there are plenty of picnic tables and benches. They have awesome events in the summer like the moon floats.

I strongly encourage everyone to take a walk around Gray's Lake. It has great views of downtown, the bridge -- especially in the evening -- is gorgeous.

This park is very cool- I LOVED the grass, it was like walking on a living carpet. The art was cool too :)

Nice place to enjoy some time away from it all. Walking trail around the lake complete with Bald Eagles. Next to Des Moines River. Beach, rentals for water craft, outdoor yoga. Check to see if it's open because they are doing some upgrades.

Gray’s Lake is a great spot for walking , skating, biking in the City of Des Moines. They also have rental equipment if you want to participate in water sports.

Great spot to walk the dog, go for a run, have an outdoor birthday party or rent a kayak and paddle onto Gray's Lake.

Great Beach great place to hang for the day. Close to airport close to hotels and wonderful place to hang out in Des Moines Iowa
Just take a load off and sit back and relax on a beach in Iowa. I drove to see this beach and it truly is a beautiful man made beach.
Canoes walking trails sail boats and more for only $10 am hour.
Worth the trip worry free and great place to play!

This lake is a charming jewel in the heart of a city. It is not only pretty, but offers fun in the water for young and old. Really family friendly.

If you are visiting Des Moines, you might enjoy a walk around Gray's Lake. The paved trail around the lake is enjoyed by residents and visitors and offers nice skyline views are well as a beautiful bridge that is lit at night. In the summer, small boats are available to rent as well.
The south entrance to the park offers a nice area overlooking the lake to sit or enjoy a picnic. This is a very family friendly park, with a playground on the north side of the lake.

Fantastic Park in the middle of the city. Many available activities at the park including the following: running, walking, biking, swimming, fishing, paddle boarding. Activities for the whole family to enjoy and great views of downtown.

Nice park near to downtown. Calm and could see people in various activities - Good for a nice walk or ride on bike with lake view.

This is an urban park on either side of a busy road. The side above was busy both days we were in Des Moines. We visited the opposite (water works) side and enjoyed the drive through. It is very, very hot in Des Moines in July. If you have your bathing suit, this looked like a gem.

We got to Gray's Lake late in the day and didn't allow enough time to do it all, but wish we had. There are walking trails...lots of people had their dogs on leashes for walks. Several biking trails to enjoy with one across a long bridge over the lake (I am told that it lights up after dark). We tried out the 4 person paddle boat that was a lot of fun...the lake was calm and it was easy to do a trip to the bridge and back to the dock in 45 minutes without wearing ourselves out. We saw people fishing from the banks of the lake as well as a dad and daughter in a rowboat. There are sailboats and canoes for rent as well as a bike powered floating device. The folks working there for the Parks and Rec dept were all friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our visit and hope to go back and spend more time there on the next visit.

Stopped and wished I had more time to take the walk across the bridge. Beautiful, dog friendly and clean. Many runners and walkers were here when I stopped mid day late in the week. Wished I had the time to also revisit at night. From a distance while in town it was gorgeous!

Walk around the lake for exercise was fun, enjoy the night lights. Planing to go back there once a week.

Gray's Lake is a oasis of nature nestled right into the downtown area. The walking path is well maintained, scenic and long enough to give walkers and runners a decent work out.
It's very dog friendly and you will find yourself greeting other walkers, runners and dogs as you walk. You can also swim during the warmer months or rent bikes, canoes and other recreational equipment.
It would be wonderful if there were more food and beverage vendors along the path. I think someone selling "picnic fare" from a food truck would do very well in the summer months.
But overall -- well maintained and a wonderful place to get some exercise and breath in some fresh air.

Wonderful trail, beautiful lakem very nice, clean, and freindly place for family.

The walkway over the lake is lit at night with colored panels in front. Making a pleasing reflection in the water or ice dependent on the season.
River flows on one side with an eagle's nest in the trees. Often, there are eagles flying. Great place for kayaking - especially lounging under the walkway above the lake on a hot summer day.
There is a walking/biking path around the lake. Paddle boats for rent in the summer. A tiny dock area for those. Bathrooms at this area.
Also, a sand beach in two areas one with roped off swimming.

My 46-year old friend died of a heart attack while biking because none of the city employees wanted to perform CPR. Due to foam coming from his mouth. CPR does not require breaths anymore. Someone also helped themselves to the thousand dollars in his wallet while he lay on the ground. They should have a defibrillator at the boat rental shop due to the large numbers of people gathered there in the summer.

Just stopped by. This lake has bike rentals, paddle boards, paddle boats, and a little more. It's along a bike/walking path. No bike equipment for small kids available to rent.

My friend and I ran around this lake in October. The fall colors were fantastic. I pleasantly noticed there was minimal tagging and/or litter. Most dog messes were picked up as well. It was nice to run through an area that was well cared for and appreciated by the community. The path is well paved and wide allowing for multiple walkers, runners, cyclists to share the path. We really enjoyed this.

Gray's Lake Park offers something for everyone. You can swim, fish, take a leisurely walk, walk or run for exercise, take your dog for an outing, have a picnic, or let your kids play in nice playgrounds. The lake is pretty, the walk ways are good, and the grounds are well kept. This is one of my granddaughter's favorite places to go.

Gray's Lake is a great place to get outdoors. There's paths for walking/running, play equipment for the children, and water accessibility. Pets are allowed (leashed) and there are tables and such for picnicking. It's a nice way to relax and enjoy the fresh air.

The service was not good at the rental spot. We called in advance to make sure paddle boarding was available that day and they told us that it was. When we arrived they told us that it wasn’t available and so they sold us an hour on paddle boats instead. When we walked down to the doc to get on our boat, there was none. The woman working was unapologetic and I found the service appalling. Very disappointed in this occupancies since I had previous experiences that were positive here.

this is a great place to get in a early morning run and enjoy the surrounding or nature. this is a safe place with a lot of out door adventure to undertake.

Gray's Lake is a spot for all. There is a 1.95 mile asphalt trail surrounding the lake that is walk and run friendly. There is a beach for swimming and plenty of places to have a picnic. There are numerous restrooms and you can walk dogs there. It appears to be a safe place to be.

Always been busy and something going on. But still a great place to get a way and always doing something to make the park better.

This is such a great spot for families to get out of the house and get some fresh air. I love coming here during sunset and going for a stroll. Highly recommend checking it out, you won't be disappointed!

This lake between airport and downtown features a well maintained walking biking path that circumvents the lake and is wide and fairly flat. There are restrooms and parking. At some seasons watercraft are on the lake.

This is my after-work bike ride destination. There are multiple bike trails that connect to Gray's Lake and there's always something different to see from the beach to the boat dock to the serpentine bridge. pump your tires or fill your water bottle at the boat rental facility. A great destination!

Excellent way to burn off a few calories. Very nice path and always enjoy the scenery! Love to take time to unwind! We have enjoyed walks as a couple or with our family. We have not taken time for a picnic but this would be a great place! Also, the lights on the bridge are beautiful at night. I love to go during different seasons because the scenery changes. Also, you can see the eagles from the one side!!

In the summer, boat rides. Year round, walking paths. The bridge is a beautiful piece of architecture, and with the plaques of remembrance, of meaning.

This is a great park to sit and relax, go for a stroll or more rigorous exercise. Water rentals are available in season... always lots of people running, walking dogs are hanging out by the water... and there are apparently Pokemon everywhere if you are into that sort of thing!

Warm November day with time for a walk. Very heartening to see lots of citizens out enjoying a beautiful day walking around this lake very pretty lots of places for picnics plenty of parking it's beautiful spend some time here.

My husband requested we go to Gray's Lake to grill out for a Father's Day picnic this year. It was a blistering hot day but there was shade and plenty of tables available. There are tables around the lake along the trail which is a fantastic walk. Many people also bike, jog, rollerblade or exercise their dogs on the trail and it is a very active space. There are kayaks, pedal boats and on certain dates stand up paddle boards for rent. There is a small snack bar area open certain hours and also a beach area. There are bathroom facilities available around the lake. The memorial/honorarium bridge is beautiful after dark with the lights. There is an eagle nest near the trail and at the right time of year the eagles can be seen there. It is a beautiful park!

this place is always so beautiful with the lake, light up bridge and trail. running, walking, biking or just sitting is always fun. there are events and rentals here that are worth looking into.

Great spot to walk or bike on paved trail, or enjoy the water wading. Not recommending swimming unless you don't mind murky water which can hide kids etc who go under. Beautiful trees, eagle nest, bridge with colorful night light panels. Rent a boat or take your own (no motors)... Feels like you're far from downtown yet it's not far to bike there to eat along the river etc. One of my favorite places in the city to feel nature submerged especially as right across the street is another huge park (Waterworks) with a trail leading to Greenwood and Ashworth Park, along the river.

The lake was a little smaller than I anticipated, but we rented stand up paddle boards and had a great time! If the wind is higher than 16 mph or they see 'white caps' they will stop renting for at least 30 minutes and then re-evaluate. This happened while we were there and quite a long line built up. Luckily we were first in line and didn't have to wait too long. There's bathroom facilities you can use or change in and the prices seemed very reasonable.

This is a great spot for walk, and I often recommend it to colleagues stay in town for business. The path is well lit, safe, and nicely done. There's always something to keep your interest on the walk as it goes along a small lake, through prairie grasses and across a bridge.

We enjoyed a walk around the lake and got a kick out of reading the messages on the plaques along the Gray's Lake Park Bridge. It's a testament to the support of the community that additional plaques can no longer be purchased. We encountered several people looking for Pokémon Go. Funny. We were sorry to see the number of large, old ash trees damaged by the Emerald Ash Borer and marked for removal. We returned the following day and rented kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and pedal boats at a very reasonable price for one hour of use. The staff, particularly the young man at the marina, was very attentive to our needs while maintaining a safe environment on the dock. This is a very well-maintained park that Des Moines residents can be very proud of.

This is a beautiful park with about a 2 mile walking path. The bridge lights up at night and is so cool. Plenty of different areas - grass, "beach," water, trails, kayaking/boat rentals. Plenty of parking too. It was really great!

If you are looking for a nice pleasant walk or run, this is a great tail. It is all paved and pretty around the lake, the bridge is the highlight.

I have gone to Gray's Lake many times in the late afternoon to ride my bike or walk around the path on the concrete walkway. I love to walk across the lighted foot bridge at night. The lake is beautiful.

Gray's Lake Park has a swimming beach, walking/bike path around the lake, peddle boat rentals and attracts those liking to throw a line in the water.

We went to Gray's Lake Park especially to view the flags in memory of those from the 9/11 terrorist attack. Such a simple thing - rows and rows of flags, blowing in the warm September breeze - was so very touching. We saw life move forward as toddlers waddled through the flags, sometimes reaching down to touch them and look closely at them. There were dogs, kids of all ages, teens, younger men and women, older men and women, handicapped, as well as the very elderly slowly passing by the humbling scene. Gray's Lake park was at its best - well trimmed, clean and the water was sparkling from the bright rays of sunshine.
It would have been a great stop just to visit without the flags. So relaxing, quiet and beautiful. Coming off Fleur Drive with the well-maintained "fleurs" along the street and Water Works Park just across the street is a statement for Des Moines, IA. It would be a great place to visit most any time of the year.
Walking trails, picnic areas, swimming or just taking some time for yourself are there for your enjoyment.

Went for an evening stroll with a friend to enjoy the park at dusk and see the bridge all lit up. Little did we know that we would encounter a beaver halfway around the path. It was certainly a highlight for me!

It is nice to see all the improvements that have been made to this area. It has a nice walking trail, swiming areas, and non-motorized watercrafts to rent. The bridge is colorfully lit at night. We love to take our dog for walks here. It is a great place to take in a little bit of nature in the middle of Des moines area. Safety has also been helped by good lighting and emergency call stations located all around the walking path. Come on out and enjoy.

Grays Lake has a great paved sidewalk and bridge to go around. The path is stroller friendly and has slight inclines and declines. It is not strenuous or over crowded. There is also a location, with limited hours, to rent paddle boats, paddle boards or sailboats.

Nice walk around a small lake. Great for stretching your legs. Lots of people and felt safe. walkers, joggers, bikers, skateboarders--all having a good time.

Great place to get out and walk if you love the great outdoors. Lots of nature to see and the walking bridge is fun. We were told that sometimes eagles are spotted flying about the lake.

Born and raised in DSM so I remember what this area used to be like. Those who live near downtown or on the south side we all know how great it is.
They have a beach area, but I haven't swam in it because it is river water and had a history of being shut down a few times because of "dirty water" issues. That's no surprise though.
Kayak, paddle boats, hydro bikes, bicycle, and catamaran rentals. Picnic areas for families, pets, and sports. The bicycle path connects to Principal Park and beyond. We love it!

Gray's Lake Park has an easy two mile walk around and even over the lake that so many families, runners and walkers enjoy. You can see every ethnic group in Des Moines take advantage of its beauty, its recreational activities and its picnic areas. There is an eagle's nest nearby that a telescope is always trained on for everybody to look through.
In short it is a good place for exercise, for gathering and for people watching. I go there frequently mostly for the beautiful walk.

Whenever I have the time to head towards the south side - a few laps around Grays Lake is one of my favorite things to do. Well taken care of and peaceful. I love it!

If you have time and want to get outside, Gray's Lake Park is the best. There is a nice trail around the lake -- which is 2 miles around. In addition to this trail, there are several picnic areas with grills, a shoreline, and a place where you can rent paddle boats and kayaks.

Great fun can be had at Gray's Lake and on any given day you will see hundreds of people enjoying this area. Walking, jogging, biking and boat rentals are just part of the fun. Free to enter and during the summer season they do have some concessions. A diverse crowd at a very nice venue.

Grab your family or a friend, shut your phone off and stroll around the lake as many times as you want. They don't charge a fee for this experience.

I love, love, love Gray's Lake! It is my favorite part of Des Moines. It is easy to get there, easy to get in and out. SO many options of stuff to do while there, and it is always so busy with active people. Kids, adults, dogs....it always makes me so happy to see so many people having daily walks, bike rides, runs, kayak's and even sailing. It is beautiful and always makes me happy. Bathrooms are always decent and easy to get in and out. I almost want to move to DesMoines for this place. I LOVE IT!

A very clean park which has a wonderful pathway right around the lake, including a raised deck over part of the lake, which allows for a bit of exercise. Swimming and boating in season as well.

Nice place for a walk and a breather. The beautiful lake and bridge view was awesome. We loved the grasshoppers! It's the simple things in life.

Visited the area in HJanuary before eating at Zombies Burgers. Nice area...clean and great views of the river and surrounding area.

Greys Lake is one of my favorite places to go when I just need to get away from the traffic and the city for a while. There is always good people watching available!

Wife and I went here for our anniversary. It's a small lake with lots of activity and they have cheap paddle boat, paddle boarding and other water based activites.

I had a great time visiting this park and had a nice walk along the water. It's very peaceful and green but you don't feel isolated as there were many people also enjoying nature. it's easy to get to ans has lots of parking.

Great for a work out or family day out. My sons and I came down and walked around before dropping my son at college. Beautiful Lake.

Took my mall walking Grandmother to enjoy a beautiful day while getting some exercise in. She loved it. Great views and wide and open enough for many.

This is a beautiful place to take a walk, jog or just sit and watch the people. You can also float around the lake in a rented paddle boat if you wish. Lots of activity going on here. I'd definitely recommend a visit to Gray's Lake.

My wife and I have done 3 walks around the lake and have loved it every time. Not crowded if you go before noon. The wildlife is wonderful to watch and photograph.

Gray's Lake is a family place ... or for the individual. If you want exercise, walk the trail around the lake. It's a 2.2 mile course that is low impact (no hills to speak of). The scenery is beautiful ... with even eagles to view as they nest on the north side. There is a beach area for those who want to swim. Paddle and sail boats are available for rent. There are concession stands on both the north and south sides of the lake. There is a picnic area on the south side for those who want to grill or bring in their dinner. There is a terrace area for receptions and parties. Plenty of parking. Plenty of fun The only negative is that cyclists can make it a bit dangerous as they pass walkers. Parents, keep an eye on small children! Gray's Lake is a real winner for Des Moines!

Very nice place quietly tucked into the heart of our state capital. There are lots of things to keep busy with; sailboat and kayak rentals, pretty sure I saw bicycle rentals too. The lake is about 100acres and almost all of it is accessible to fish from shore. Also a boat ramp to bring a fishing boat too. There is a bike/run/walk trail around the lake that hooks up to a much larger system. It is well maintained. Concession stand, picnic areas, and so on.
Just a quiet place seconds away from the chaos of a large city. It is rather busy, but everyone is polite.

We walked to Greys lake park from downtown Des Moines along the Des Moines river along past the fast flowing water dams, photo time, which were nice to see, then cross over the river and head up the other river called the Racoon river up a well paved walkway ond cycle track for about two miles to Grey' Lake park.
We were not at the main part of the park but there was tables and park benches available and a portaloo area. The beach area was further around the lake but there was a car park where we where.Thats where you can hire boats ans kayaks that you see on the lake.
A nice place too chill out and relax or have a picnic on a nice day. We caught a big fish with our bare hands even though we were not fishing,we were just out for a walk by the lake and the opportunity arose to catch it . Iwas two feet long and heavy, we took a photo of it and put it straight back and watched it swim away.
The park is policed by the police on eletric bicycles for your safety, and it's free.

Lock us in the park while we was fishing and didn't even checked just lock the gates. Not even a notice

Great place to go to relax. Family and pet friendly. Beautiful views. You can rent paddle boats, canoes and other water items for the lake. They have the life jackets there as well.

The view of the city from the pedestrian bridge is awesome. The bridge also lights up in geometric triangles at night. Great place to take pictures.

We were here for a dog show down the street and had a small pack hike with our dogs. We met at 8:00am and walked around the lake. We had a friend from the area who answered our questions along the way that was for sure a bonus. Our walk around the lake was so pleasant that we did it again walking 4 miles instead of the 2 that was intended. Just a beautiful place and wish I lived closer or had one just like it in my area. It was so peaceful but had traffic with mothers and their strollers, bikers and the serious joggers and then us who were just enjoying friends company. It was so well maintained, I just loved it and I keep the 5 stars for the special places I visit and this is right there!!!!

Stroll around this lake and you may see bald eagles overhead. For sure, you will see the unexpected diversity of Des Moines. All ages, ethic groups, singles and families. Very safe.

Grays lake and park offers a number of activities: beautiful hiking and biking trails, a few swimming beaches, boat rentals that include canoes, kayaks, & sailboats that are reasonably priced. Beautiful place for a picnic. A very nice area to spend some time away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Nice clean lake with very well kept walking paths. 2.2 miles around the lake or take another adventure onto another trail. The lake itself has a sandy beach, bike rentals and watercraft rentals.

Can always count on Grays Lake to have a clean quiet area to park and relax to a lunch and even some good looking women jogging always a great place to visit

Gray's Lake is a lake for all people. It has a two mile running, walking, biking trail around it with links to all of the local biking and running trails from downtown and Waterworks Park. If you want to run or walk, you can turn into the parking lot across from the Arboretum entrance and park by the close-by bathrooms and boat launch off of Fleur Drive. If you want a beach for swimming in the summer, a playground for your kids or a few picnic tables, you can drive further along the river from that same entrance and park further to the East by the bathrooms and swimming beach. Or, if you want to picnic and have grills, you can continue down the drive, curving around the bottom of the lake and park to the south of the lake. There you will find larger picnic sites for family groups and for grilling. If you want to rent sail boats or want to sit on the docks and look at downtown, drive further south on Fleur Drive and enter the south drive to Gray's Lake where the shelter, concessions and boat rentals are. This area has great views of downtown and the capital building. I have been running and walking around Gray's Lake at least once a week for almost ten years in all seasons, mostly in the mornings. The Park crew keeps the area incredibly well-kept. Even in the winter, they will clear the snow and ice from the walk and you can still walk or run around the lake ice-free. Gray's Lake has a reputation for getting warm and algae in the summer, so you can check bacteria levels before you swim, if you wish. I swim with my kids and dog off the beach there in the summer after a walk in hot weather. They love the play park and beach area. One of the real gifts of the area is the nesting family of Bald Eagles who have made Gray's Lake their home. They return to their huge nest of branches along the river (just by where the trails from downtown meet the Fleur entrance) each March and lay eggs. Many eagle babies have hatched along Gray's Lake and learned to fish and fly in that area. The most majestic, heart moving scenes I have had the honor to see have been a family of eagles fishing in the early morning calm waters of the river or lake -- the parents with white heads and the kids, still all brown. Everyone who visits the lake has been respectful and gives the eagles their space and so they are protected and keep returning. We are fortunate to have Gray's Lake so close to our city.

The water quality is questionable in here. Des Moines has other good spots to spend your time, even on grey day, than here.

Was in Des Moines to visit some friends and we stopped by Gray's Lake Park for a bit of a respite. The park consists of a small lake with a nice paved path surrounding it. At the start of the path, there are tables, bathrooms, and sitting areas for those who just want to chill.
It took us about 30-45 minutes to walk around the lake at a somewhat brisk pace. It was quite a nice walk, though there was not a whole lot of scenery or things to look at along the way. I don't remember seeing any bathrooms or water fountains either, so you'd best prepare for that.
We went on a Sunday afternoon and the parking lot was fairly full. I don't know if it is usually like that, but we were lucky to find a space to park the car.
All-on-all, Gray's Lake is a great place to chill out by either going on a pleasant stroll or sitting on a bench at the lake.

The city does a marvelous job keeping the place clean and inviting. The water is not clean enough to swim in, but that does not stop locals from dipping a toe.

You can hike around the lake, rent paddle boats, eat a picnic, swim, bike, read a book and more. They are building a tunnel under Fleur Drive so you can walk or bike to Water Works park. Is does flood when there is a lot of rain so currently unable to use. There is parking but when the weather is nice it fills up fast.

Grays Lake is a beautiful place to just go for a walk, bring your dog to play, have a picnic or kayak on the cool waters. I've been visiting the lake for almost two years since I moved here year round and sometimes my hubby and I bike from ho.e to the lake just for exercise. I recommend people check it out

My family stopped in Des Moines for a day while on vacation. We were not sure what to do with older, adult sons. We decided to go paddle boarding and kayaking on Gray's Lake. We had a great time! The lake is beautiful and you can see the downtown skyline. It makes you feel like you are in nature, but also in a cool city at the same time. The price was extremely reasonable and I would highly recommend this to any family who likes adventure. They also had bike rentals and if we had stayed longer I definitely would have rented them, as the bike trails are very cool.

Park is great; good trails, kayak rentals etc.
The gates are locked promptly at 10 pm and no way to get your car out until the next day. Need to post bigger signs to this effect.

Want to feel the warm culture of Des Moines on a beautiful hike? Gray's Lake is the ideal location where one is surrounded with an estimated 3 mile organic circle path that encompasses the lake. There is a beautiful yet brief bridge that spans across this lake and there exist several security phones to use in came of an emergency. I believe this area is patrolled by police as well but with the population that visits, safety seems to be always felt. Its a beautiful pit stop for a couple that wants a romantic scenery, a family searching for a wide variety of reasons to just be out in the fresh air. There is no fee, just an open mind and you will find yet another thing to love about Des Moines!

We only had a short time to visit this park. We could have spent two full days there between the extensive trails, swimming, and kayaking available.

Grays Lake Park. Des Moines,IA. People of IA are very fortunate to have Eagles and a Eagle nest this close to view. The Eagle pair have been using this nest for at least seven years.

The Capitol Building is beautiful. Downtown is very easy to navigate around to all the landmarks and most are within walking distance of each other.

Great place to meet friends, and then hook up with the bike trails connecting to Gray's Lake Park. Easy access from major streets in Des Moines.

The best place to walk if you like nature and beauty in the same place. The walking trail around the lake is 1.9 miles and easy to navigate. Watch for the Eagles nest on the north side of the lake. Rentals such as paddle boats and sail boats. Fun!

Great place to spend some time outdoors. The trip around Gray's lake is a little over one mile and well worth the trip. This is well maintained walkway, with lots of others taking advantage of the trip around the lake.

The city of Des Moines has taken a park and made a family fun place. They have a swimming area. They have a walkway around the lake and picnic areas as well as play areas.

Great trails and lots of people being active. Kayak and canoe rentals. Moonlight canoe rental some nights.

Ran through here for the half marathon. A beautiful park. The bridge across the lake is particularly nice. A fun lake for stand-up paddling.

It's so close to traffic but by itself is a serene place where one can sit by the water, walk, run or just have a picnic as the mood is. Difficult to believe it's so close to downtown!

Nice walkways, beautiful place.great walkway/runway loop around it.late evening is the best time for walk.safe n sound.well lit .Lots of families n folks come here.Park is wonderful. It offers fishing g,swimming, biking, walking picnic, great place to e joy nature.

They need to pick up after dogs and not let children in diapers swim in their lake. The water just looked gross and dog droppings everywhere. Yuck, no way would I ever swim there! (shiver)

Grays Lake has a wonderful walk=around that provides both sun and shade. Lovely views into downtown Des Moines just add to the ambiance. Great healthy activity for the whole family!

Very nice place for a healthy walk. Fresh air, trees blowing. There is a walking bridge, at night the city has it the lights on.
In the summer there is a beach to go swimming, picnic tables all over, paddle boats and kayaks to rent. Enjoy..

Gray's Lake is great for a picnic, a walk, a bike ride, kayaking and just being out side in general. It is kept clean and there aren't a lot of sketchy people lurking around. There are trails that lead to downtown and other parts of the city. Also you can walk right across the street into Water Works and walk through the arboretum. It's a very nice place to spend an afternoon.

I have been to this park a few times. If you want to take a leisurely stroll around the lake, or find a shady spot to picnic, or go for a run on a nice level surface, this is a great spot. Ample parking, centrally located (close to the airport), they have events here throughout the year, clean and well kept. What more can you ask for in a nice city park.

My husband and I went to the park and rented kayaks. It was nice to have all the equipment we needed available for us. It was very inexpensive and we had a great time on the lake. The staff was very helpful and we can't wait to go back.

It is a peaceful, park like setting to walk or run in. Even though many people at peak times, especially summer evenings, still plenty of space. And safety in numbers, never afraid because never alone. Good for families or more serious exercisers. Most keep pets well under control. Lake facilities, at south end of Lake, rents paddle boats, canoes and other craft. A few refreshments, also decent restrooms.

This park is gorgeous and is perfect if you want a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. A paved pathway circles the lake, and is about two miles in length. It's perfect for walking, running, or biking! There are also plenty of spots in which to soak in the lake on a hot day. If you want, there are also watersport rentals available. We saw people kayaking and paddleboarding on the lake.
No entrance fee and dogs are permitted.

This park, lake and walking trail are an ideal place to get a bit of nature and relaxation in the city. Very well maintained, including clean restrooms stocked with toilet paper and soap, it's a very enjoyable way to spend the day. Boats available for rent, small beach and swimming areas and the scenic trail make it ideal.

I have been boating here since I was 14. When ib season there are boat rentals. I prefer to bring my own kayak for a quick paddle. There is a beautiful observation area above the boat rentals with tables and chairs and beautiful view of downtown. Fir those who like to walk, there is tge mile long walking path. A sandy beach for swimming. Lots of wild life. Bald eagle's and barn swallows in the spring. Cranes, ducks and even a few pelican's passing through from July to October. A nice quiet place to come decompress from the daily grind, right in the heart if Des Moines!

Gray's lake has been on of my favorite places to exercise for years. The 2.2 mile trail that includes a walk across a bridge spanning part of the lake is a delightful way to keep fit. You can also bike on the trail, or while at the lake you can rent canoes, paddle boats, rowboats, windsurfers, sailboats or take your own mode of water transport. There is a playground in the park and a concession stand. You can park your car or your bike and just enjoy the surroundings or after your exercises are finished you can head across the street to Waterworks Park for more relaxing times.

It's always a good day to walk Grays Lake. Especially when the sun is out. the trail is easy to navigate, dogs enjoy the walk, and you can even rent a canoe or sail boat when the weather changes.

Wonderful city outdoor center. Food offerings would be nice.

Stopped in on Memorial Day. A little congested but that was to be expected. People in water vehicles and swimming. Pleasant place to sit and watch the world. Very clean.

We enjoy crossing the bridge and looking for our plaque, Kayaking the Moon Floats, or just using the trail to absorb the sun, wind, and outdoors. It is one of the best places to go to guarantee seeing smiling faces.

Lots of people go to Gray's for the environment. You can walk leisurely around the lake, or exercise. It is a beautiful place to enjoy the outdoors. We really had a wonderful walk when we went.

We love coming here to keep cool in the summer. The area is kept pretty clean and the available life jackets are always nice. The bathrooms could use some better drainage though.

The walkway bridge that extends into Grays Lake with the hundreds of memorial plaques was moving. Weather permitting You can rent paddle boats and paddle boards, No dogs allowed. There is a picinic area to eat or relax. Restrooms and drinking fountain available.

Close to downtown, perfectly located. One can easily stop here for a quick lap around the lake or rent a kayak and stay longer! The trees are great for hanging your hammock and enjoying nature.

Gray's Lake is a beautiful place on the near Southside of Des Moines in a wonderful setting. It is surrounded by a paved walking and biking trail approximately 5 miles long that includes a beautifully illuminated pedestrian bridge that is an amazing sight at night. It's possible to rent kayaks and paddle boats and there is a concession stand open during the warm months. The north side of Grayslake has a nice Beach area and there is ample parking. The south side of the lake offers beautiful views of downtown Des Moines and the State Capitol. Across Fleur Drive that runs along the west side of the park is Des Moines Water Works Park. This to, is a beautiful park that stretches west for a few miles along the Raccoon River and has hiking and biking trails and a number of lakes and ponds of various sizes. Camping is not allowed at Gray's Lake Park but there are picnic tables and many nice and scenic places to enjoy a picnic. There is typically a nice breeze coming off the lake that helps cool some of the hot days. During the summer months there are music concerts on the patio venue above the concession stand with basic food and drinks served. There is an incredible hiking and biking trail that connects to the Grays Lake Park Trail making it possible to travel from the lake to nearby downtown Des Moines or from the downtown area to the lake. It is about 5 miles between the two locations. The area is very family-friendly and many people will walk the part of the trail that includes the illuminated pedestrian bridge at night.

Great walk, lots of people, parking was really full the day we were there but we were able to make it work.

You can walk, run, bike, etc. around the lake, it's a 1.5-2ish miles. there's boating options to rent, paddling boarding, kayaking, canoeing, water bikes and sailboats, swimming area and picnic spots. open field areas and playground all near the waters edge. It's beautiful! It also has access to great bike paths that will take you downtown, and any direction in des moines and the surrounding areas. They also do some fun free events throughout the summer and fall.

I was living downtown, very overweight and totally out of shape when I discovered the trails that lead here. I began by driving to the parking lot and then started the 2 mile walk around the lake. The park benches, strategically placed along the path was the only way I was able to make it the whole way around. The first few times I probably sat at every bench. And I was so glad they had multiple rest rooms! But, as time went by I was able to skip some benches and keep going. Eventually I was able to skip them all. After 6 months I felt strong enough to walk from downtown to Principal Park, following the trail along the Racoon River all the way to Gray's Lake! Then followed Fleur to Locust and then back home. After 1 year I had lost over 100lbs and completed this walk weekly, in any type of weather, without even getting tired! What a long way from those days of having to stop at every bench. Thank you Gray's Lake for changing my life.

Nice city park with lake. Can rent kayaks and paddle boats. Wonderful lit walking path around the lake.

Rented kayaks for a reasonable price and spent time on the beach that is free. Friendly staff, good ice cream.

The park is beautiful and has a lovely bridge that gets lit up at night. It is a wonderful sight and is a nice walk on a brisk autumn day. Bring a picnic basket and stay for a few hours! Maybe you will witness a wedding!

Got to experience a beautiful lake surrounding a park and beach. Loved seeing all the people walking or exercising around very happy.

Nice lake-side park. Fun to walk around or rent a canoe.

Nice place to spend a day. Bring your own bike, canoe or kayak.
Rental rates were not that bad either.

Quiet and a little cold.....go there for a run or for inspiration. Bike trails connects Downtown and west Des moines. Best time to go is when it's not so cold. There are water activities available in the summer.

I love taking the dogs to the park and just walk around the path. There are a lot of places to stop and rest along the way. Lots of activity going on as people are walking, running, etc. There is a bowl of water for the doggies to drink from too so that is nice. One of my favorite places to go for a walk.

When we travel, just as when we write, we look for details that reveal the whole. On a recent jaunt to Des Moines, it happened to be a full moon. For this, the folks at Gray's Lake Park had announced a Moon Float. Any non-motorized watercraft was welcome to ply the water as a summer moon rose over a shoreline hill. And they happily rented canoes, some sort of aqua-bike and pedal boats to a long line of moon fans. It was fun and beautiful and kinda quiet and graceful. Here's the Iowa kicker, that detail that says something and keeps me going back to the Hawkeye State. Every announcement about this Moon Float said you MUST have a light on your craft. And then it said if you don't have one, they'd loan you one for free.

Great for walking, scenery, right in the heart of DSM. Fishing mostly stinks here, but great for all other recreational activities, boat rentals, etc. If it's too busy, go across the street to water works park for less congestion.

Gray's Lake was renovated and is beautiful and sparkling, there is a beautiful bridge you can walk across that catches the sun and makes colourful reflections. It is a safe and fun family friendly place to walk, jog or bike...and it's FREE!

My family took a leisurely stroll through this park on a nice Memorial day holiday. Waling along the lake and the nearby Raccoon River is very nice.

has a small lake with a great walking and biking trail in the heart of the city

from a total makeover into a wonderful family area. There are walkways, beaches and even movies during the Summer. A lovely area to take a walk or wade with your dog.

This area of a major town offers all that a city or country person with family, couple or solo would want in a day trip!!!

Fantastic spot for walking, running, biking, paddle boating, eagle watching...you name it! Definitely make an evening trip so you can see the bridge light up.

It's no Central Park, but what a fabulous asset for Des Moines. Beautiful jogging/walking/roller blading path, sailboat and kayak rentals. Swimming, toilet facilities. Amust see/do!

The playground is small but well appointed, near the abandoned silos. The lake has swimming, but as it was after the season, we didn't do that - the American White Pelicans were travelling through, and our 2 year old grand daughter loved seeing them. Nice loop walk around the park. Excellent and convenient parking. FREE.

It's hard to imagine what this park looked like 15 years ago with a derelict hotel, weeds, drug action and who knows what else. Today it is a spectacular amenity for all with walkways, rental canoes and paddle boats, picnic areas, play areas, a rainbow lit bridge, a beach and eagle nests across the river. This is one of our favorite places to walk and we try to walk it every day. Walking at night is magical with the city lights in the background. It is well lit and the pathways are plowed in the winter. We liked it so much that we donated a plaque and like to see it every time we cross the bridge. Absolutely marvelous.

If visiting Des Moines and you want a quiet walk, go to Gray's Lake and walk around the lake. It's a little over two miles long and will take about 30-45 minutes. Nice wide walk ways and always has a view of the lake and the DM skyline.

Run, Yoga, Pilates, Walk, Bike, water sports, etc. All you want to do at a park is found at Gray's Lake, in the most beautiful city of Iowa; DES MOINES!

When we first visited this place - way before the Flood of '93, it was just another 'waterfront' to hangout. Since the flood and the gaining of extra land from the erstwhile Holiday Inn (on the South-West corner) this lake has become one of the preeminent locales to visit. This is true not just for Des Monites or Iowans, but the whole Midwest. After the great renovations, Grays Lake is beautiful, colorful, and full of life and vigor.
There is a lot to do there: boating, kayaking, or just plain old taking in the sight of Down Town Des Moines. There is a café, rental boats and paddle boat. The walking bridge across the water is especially wonderful. Sit on the northern shore and watch it. The sight exceptionally wonderful just as the moon raises – full moon is the best time to see the reflection of the moon on the calm waters. And on a dark night, wow, with the walking bridge lights reflecting, it is exquisite, sensational...
This is a real jewel for Greater Des Moines. Enjoy.

Quiet, nicely maintained area. Great for walking around the lake or on the many connecting paths that go downtown or to Water Works park. Tends to be crowded on hot summer days.

Gray's Lake is very pretty and a 2 mile walk around the lake on a paved path. There are usually a lot of people of all ages at all times. I did not see any park staff/security so it does not feel safe to go at night, would never go alone as a female. There are nice restrooms, drinking fountain, playground area, benches to rest, volleyball nets, grills, and beach area. There are paddle boats that can be rented out, but the beach and water crafts were closed due to flooding and high E. coli levels.

I hit this place as often as I can when I'm in town. I like to jog - or at least walk - around the lake a couple of times. The trail is usually pretty busy with joggers & walkers, but it's not crowded. The scenery is nice, there's alot of wildlife and things going on that keep it interesting.

The lake is smallish but big enough for small boats and radio control enthusiasts. The paths are smooth and well-landscaped, and there are great viewing points around the lake. There is plenty of space for families and friends to spread out, play friendly sports, and just have a picnic. Close to downtown and residential areas, this park seems to carve out a special bit of time and space for recreation.

We were glad to find this park for a walk, the day after a long drive. It is popular with locals, judging from all the cyclists, runners, walkers, etc., that we saw. Very clean, no litter.

You can jog the trail or ride a bike, fish, rent a paddle boat, enjoy the beach or play frisbee on the grass. This place was not as nice 20 years ago but they have really improved it.

Ran there from our downtown hotel along the river path. Clean, safe and lovely running path and even saw bald eagles in their nest by the lake! Perfect way to start the day!

Great path around the lake for a walk, good photo opportunities this time of year (spring/fall) as well. Many people take their dogs.

What a beautiful lake! Clean & tranquil. It has a nice walking trail. The bridge is colorfully lit at night. Beach area is also there to swim. Boat/Bicycle rentals are also available.

What a beautiful lake. Clean, well kept, tranquil. A cool place to hang out, with lots of things to do.

Whether you go to walk, run or skate the trail around tis beautiful little lake it's one of my favorite places! It's safe and clean always.

Single girl who felt safe walking around. Paths not covered by heavy bushes so felt open and safe. Several paths to choose from (over lake, next to river, along woods). There is an Eagle nesting now across the river on the left hand side shortly after you enter the park. Also if you like walking check out the Arboreteum (sp?) across the road.

Great place for a picnic, taking a walk, biking and so many other things (Pokemon Go! anyone? lol) Very nice park with great trails, lots of people on a sunny day. A gem in the center of the city!

The focal point of this park is a small lake. The park includes a wonderful trail around the lake. The swimming beach is ok, but the water clarity is not the best. Most sunbath and skip getting into the water.
There are multiple very nice picnic areas and play areas. This is a great recreational resources for area residents.
I would NOT put it on a must see visitors list. Des Moines area has much better to offer.

Grays Lake is my go to place for my zen and my exercise! The scenic views and the active atmosphere always pumps me up and makes me smile! I love to paddle board or kayak on Grays Lake (inexpensive water rentals are available right on the lake) or walk around it, (you can bring your dog too) or bike ride the trails around it, and even ride to the downtown area for lunch. You can also swim or relax on the beach or yoga in the park. There is something for everyone!!

This park is on Fleur Drive across from The Water Works on the south side of downtown. It has a bike/walking path that circles the lake. The beautiful pedestrian bridge is lighted with different colors at night. Very popular on a nice day. Gets lots of use.

I always love to go for a run around Gray's Lake or even rent a paddle boat with my boyfriend and paddle around the lake and enjoy the day. I even love to go at dusk and watch the water and enjoy the bridge being lit up and the view of Downtown Des Moines. I just don't think it's good for swimming. It's a reservoir from the runoff from the river. The water always feels slimy and it seems like they have to close the water due to high levels of toxins quite often.

A beautiful green place to visit during the day or evening--weekday or weekend. I find it very relaxing to ride my bike over to the lake and sit and read a book by the water. Much to do there too ---can rent a canoe, paddleboats...dogs are welcome. There is a beach for swimming too.

This is not just a lake for walkers to enjoy the pathway - Grays Lake is a wonderful venue for members of the Des Moines Rowing Club. In early June they hold a novice day where you can try out this beautiful and exhilarating sport. Novice members then row here each week for training in the sport until they graduate to rowing on the Des Moines River where the rowing club has their main facility. You'll see the rowers out there early in the spring, and throughout the year as weather permits, rowing their singles and doubles, quietly self-propelled, able to enjoy the lake and the nature around them. Grays is a wonderful resource for our city, so close to the hub of downtown but still a safe, peaceful getaway for all kinds of outdoor activities.

This is a lovely place for a walk or bike ride. The trail is well lit for walks after dark. We love walking here after a great dinner in Des Moines.
Lots to do and fun for all ages!

This is a great little lake with a 2 mile walking trail around it. It was pretty busy after work (around 5:30), but not crowded. All sorts of people walk, run, bike, kayak, etc. It's a beautiful little park close to downtown. Highly recommend.

Gray's Lake Park is a nice large park that wraps around the lake. There are trails, benches, and lots of places to enjoy the scenery.

We enjoyed walking around this beautiful lake with views of the downtown of Des Moines. There is also a beach for swimming, fishing, playground, and canoes, kayaks, and boats available to rent.

The city of Des Moines has done a very good job of making this park classy. There are so many fun activities to do in and around the lake. Besides fun water activities you can take a very pleasant walk or ride around the lake. Beautiful bridge. Fabulous park for early mornings or late nights.

What a wonderful lake. My sister-in-law took me for a walk in the evening. It is a 2 mile walk. We could see the city center lit up at evening. The trail goes along raccoon river. There are eagles nesting along the river. It is not a hard walk.

The is a beautiful park near downtown Des Moines. It has lots to offer including a paved trail all the way around the late. You can rent kayaks and other lake vessels. There are a couple of beaches and a playground as well as picnic spots with grills all around the lake.

Great place for a walk or run. Beautiful trails walking biking
Or running. Animals are welcome. Has areas to fish swim and Picnic

The park was a little tough with the road construction, but well worth it. It is a nice easy level walk that goes out over the water so you can look down and see the fish and waterbirds around you.

Lots of walking trails highlighted by a beautiful bridge with views of downtown. Boats for rent but beach is free. No lifeguard.

Perfect place for a walk or run, path is 2 miles around! Fishing and small scale boating opportunities. Kinda crowded on the weekends, but what else isnt?

Whether you go to walk, run or skate the trail AROUND the lake -- or sail, swim or paddle IN the lake, this is a multi-season gem. The walkway is a beautiful piece of public art, as is the boat house and the native plantings near it.

The lake is indeed beautiful! There is a large swimming beach; however, it was closed due to harmful algae when we were there, so I can't say anything about the state of the lake bottom. There's a big park for children, appropriate for ages 2 and up. There is also a paved walking path around the lake.

Come here a lot to bike, walk my dog, exercise and just enjoy one of Des Moines best things to do. Love this park!

This park was waaaay cool! We spent an entire afternoon here and were not bored at all! The bike bridge and the trails were really nice and the kids park was good too. Lots of friendly people and seemed like a safe place to go!

Beautiful park just minutes from downtown Des Moines. Nice wide multi-use path around the lake, about a 2 mile loop. A few swimming beaches, plus a boating center where you can rent an assortment of small watercraft.

Love this two mile walk. There is always plenty of people walking. It is safe for families. The paved path is easy for strollers or wheelchairs.

In the middle of the bustle of the City there lays a quaint lil park with a lake and some amazingly beautiful views of the city. Seem to be activities here different times of the year.

A popular place to get out in nature: a lake / beach / walking trail in the heart of Des Moines. Check out the downtown view as well as bird watching (eagle's nest), boat rental, and sometimes free live entertainment. Great place to take your family or hanging out with friends.

Wonderfull place to walk where you are able to see Eagles return each year to nest and have their young. People greet you in a friendly matter as we pass. View of our State Capitol with it's gold dome at end of the lake. You can rent a paddle boat or launch your own boat for fun on the water. You can have a picnic in the park for special occasions. Convenient to get there by car or bike trails from all over the city. It is a great experience each time we go over there. Thanking the Lord and the city of Des Moines for this place!

Neat little lake area to walk around. Paved and all level footing. At some points you can extend your walk on to other connecting trails.

Gray's Lake is great for a respite from downtown Des Moines. It's so close, yet an oasis. It has many paved trails, including around the lake, and is big enough for biking or distance running. Even better, it has a large bathroom and water sports rental facility, so you "go" and then get ice cream ... and then get a boat and paddle out into the lake. Don't miss the rainbow bridge, a long bridge over part of the lake with prisms attached to the sides.

I love Gray's Lake Park near downtown Des Moines. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because it is so nice that it becomes extremely crowded in nice weather, and the crowds of families walking with kids and strollers and not paying attention to the fact that there are others around can be very frustrating. This crowding can also make it difficult to find parking.
Having introduced that caveat, I still love it. I believe the paved trail is just shy of 2 miles - 1.9 I believe, but it also has extensions that take you along the river to link up with the riverfront trails downtown, and also to Water Works park across Fleur Drive. The Gray's Lake trail is part of several running events, including the Leprechaun Chase and the Des Moines Marathon, and the lake itself has been used in the past for the swim portion of the Hy-Vee Triathlon.
The path is well done and beautiful, with a lovely walking bridge that has a nice colored light effect at night, and there is a point on the trail where you have a fantastic view of the downtown skyline across the water. There are plenty of spots to stop and sit on a park bench, and you can rent boats if you want to get on the water. There is also a beach if you want to swim. I've seen people paddle boarding, kayaking, fishing, canoeing, biking, walking, blading, running…there is something for most everyone here. There are decent bathroom facilities positioned along the trail, so you aren't squatting in bushes or dealing with port-a-potties. There is a concession area open during the warmer months, and they occasionally have outdoor movie nights.
In recent years, they have also started hosting Yoga In The Park, which draws a good crowd and is a beautiful way to begin a Saturday morning.
I definitely recommend Gray's Lake Park for the person looking to enjoy the outdoors, especially if you are looking for a good running route that makes it easy to keep track of mileage, just be advised that on the nicest days, you will need to brace yourself for crowds of people who don't really pay attention to the people around them.

A gem in the city! Great trail or grassy area to hang out by the lake. Well manicured, clean restrooms.

The trails around and near this park are fantastic for running, walking, biking, rollerblading, etc. If that's not your scene, they have plenty of picnic tables and good spots to lay a blanket down and relax. The pond offers a little beach, a small boat dock, and water sport opportunities. I've rowed out on the lake before and it's very peaceful for being right in the heart of Des Moines.
The park does flood pretty easily during the spring months, which is a downer. However, that's the only downside to this park.

Great place to get outdoors and run, bike, walk, fish, water sports or just take your dog for a walk. Also swimming beach.

We start our ride at Birdland Marina, ride downtown along the river and c ontinue on to Gray's Lake Park. The scenery is nice and the bridge across the lake is fun. I am a paraplegic and must pedal with my hands so most importantly to me is that there is't much to speak of as far as hills. And if one so desired, you could stop and take a dip in the lake in the summer to cool off. There are also some rentals available to get out on the lake.

We are very lucky to have a park with lake so close to the city. They have a 2 mile paved path around the lake for walking, running, etc. I've taken my dogs several times and it is such a nice area for all to enjoy. The last time I went they were doing an outdoor yoga class. They have boats and kayaks to rent. If you don't live in Des Moines you definitely should visit Gray's Lake!

this was our 1st trip to Des Moines and we were to told to visit this place by our friends, one of the best places to get away from everything and just relax and connect yourself with the nature. We walked all around the lake and it was worth every minute.

Very nice public resource, great walking and bike path. Nice beach, with change house and rentals. Bikes and water craft are available for rental on site.

An excellent place to walk off that big dinner meal! Love the boats and dock, nice seating deck, and a great resreshment stand!

We really enjoyed our walk in Gray's Lake Park across the bridge, while waiting to catch a film at the Fleur a few blocks away. Loved looking at all of the memorial plaques, and watching the huge fish, trying to decide if they were some sort of giant carp.

I was back in Iowa the first week of September it was well worth the stop a great place to go with family, GF or BF, the water is so calming, if you haven't been there yet you really should go.

Nice short walk around the lake, some great views of the city and lucky to spot a bald eagle in the trees on the river

A very nice place for a walk or run. Plenty of nature to take in on the approximately 2 mile path around the lake. There is a sand beach and plenty of restrooms. Lots of people will be there with you.

By the time we moved in to Des Moines, it was close to noon and were in badly need of a place for relax. Gary's Lake Park is an ideal place for that in the city, where one could relax under a shades of trees. A walkway around the lake allow park visitors to have walking exercises and the lake provides an opportunity for rowing. The bridge across the lake provides a nice view if the lake and the city.

Many trails lead to this park via Des Moines city and beyond. Jasper winery is under a mile from here. Plan your route to the winery carefully and you need not ride to much of a busy road. Great park and lake to ride around

This is the place to be if you want to see what Iowan's are doing or seeing. It is fun to people watch, it is a great walking area and bicycling area. The view of Downtown is the greatest and they have activities and food and even public bathrooms and showers on the beach area.

Lovely park small swimming area. Running path rent canoes cheap. Very nice
Lots of morning walkers runners etc

this park is awesome. Its free. Full of trails for biking and walking. You can rent boats for the lake and you can swim in it. did i mention parking and entry is free? So dope.

Beautiful, well-maintained city park. Wonderful taste of nature in the heart of the city! Lovely grassy areas with lots of picnic tables and several benches along the 2-mile trail. Water craft rentals are wel used on warm days. Great get-away!

In a park that is larger than NYC's Central Park. Great to see walkers, runners, bicyclists of all ages round this lake. Free community yoga on Saturdays starts May 25 on the SE section of the lake. 9 am. Join us!

I used to hang out here alot back when a friend of mine lived in town. Not so much anymore. Wonderful place to visit. This last time I was there, I even saw a huge, eagle occupied nest! Well patrolled too. Marcydiner tantrum scale of 5/5-no screaming kids.

This park is wonderful and perfect for people looking for a place to run or walk since the path is wide and I believe the loop is just shy of 2 miles. However, in the evening hours it is incredibly busy and I struggled to find a place to park.

This is a great place it's a good place for families, there's lots of family-friendly activities even if it's just walking in a picnic with plenty of parking all around. in the summer you can rent kayaks or paddle boats and things like that the city of Des Moines does a good job in maintaining the park. It's a good place for people with dogs that want to walk their dogs they have lots of waste pickup points for dog waste. Sometimes it can be crowded so if you are a person of a certain age, who has flexibility in their time you can go during the time periods when it's not crowded. You can see wonderful birds at different times of the year depending on when they're there there is an eagle's nest that's been there I know of at least five years. the city is also really work hard with volunteers to put in prairie plants and prairie pollinators. Eventually when the tunnel is open it'll offer easier access to water works park. It would not be a place that I would bike there's a bike trail right next to it that links up to the downtown and all the way out through water works in the suburbs there's just too many people normally on the trail to biking if you do bike have to really go slow and be aware of people who are walking and talking and dogs and all that.

Remodeled and looking good. The entire area is revamped and looks gorgeous! Water is clean, area is well groomed. Small boats for rent. Biking AND hiking paths!! BBQ area fun place for family gatherings

Gray's Lake is a beautiful place to take a walk or sit outside and enjoy the nice weather. There is plenty of space to play games, have a picnic, or lay out on a blanket and read.

There's an array of things to do here - you can rent kayaks etc, swim, fish, there's a wonderful walking path that's paved. Trees all around - an oasis in the middle of the city :)

This place is great if you just want to get out of the city while you're still in the city. It is the perfect place to go for a morning run or a lunchtime walk.

Nice place to go for a walk. 1.9 m on an asphalt trail around an old sand pit alongside to Raccoon River. A pair of Bald Eagles are visible on their nests at the NW corner of the walk. The only real big drawback to the place is the ever increasing number of dog owners that DON'T clean up after their animals.

Nice place to take a walk with your dog or significant other. Also, very family friendly. If I lived in Des Moines I would enjoy trying to get on the lake with a kayak!

Cute park, great little beach area, and a wonderful clean trail! We love going for walks here! Recommend 100%

After a warm June day in Des Moines, we went to Gray's Lake for a evening walk. The light breeze made our walk very pleasant as we rounded the 2 mile perimeter. Lots of families and folks out walking.

Good place to hike on a smooth surface. Easy to get into plenty of places to park, picnic, swimming is also available. No lifeguards on duty so keep close eye on everyone.

Lovely park for a run or a bike ride and in-line skating which I did! Very green and pretty with many other options for outdoor activities!

Love to run around the lake. The bridge is really cool with all the lights at night. Great place for outdoors.

This is a great place for an afternoon with the family or a romantic walk across the bridge. There's a trail around the lake for walking, jogging or biking. Boats are also available to take out on the lake. The kids enjoy a stop at the playground too.

When you come to visit Des Moines, or if you live here, take time to visit Gray's Lake. It is near downtown and accessible by bike and walking trails. For exercise, walk around the lake once and you will have logged 2.25 miles! There is also an area that has paddle boats and paddle boards for rent. You can fish and picnic anywhere around the lake. Part of the walking trail utilizes a beautiful pedestrian bridge. Great place to feel like you are out in the woods right in the middle of town!

The trail surrounding the lake is absolutely awesome! It is in great shape and big enough for lots of people to use. Love it!

Beautiful park-like setting easily accessible off Fleur Dr. Three parking areas for convenience. There is a wide biking/walking trail around a very nice sized lake. The bridge across one area is lite up at night and very pretty. Picnic tables and benches are available around lake. Off of south parking lot there is a large movie screen with family films shown. Pedal boats and sail boats can be rented from this lower area and they provide lessons on sailing in the summers. There are many walkers, families with children, bikers and some roller blades at times all managing to share the space in a safe manner. We have never encountered any problems, feel very safe there and wish there were more areas like this! Please go and enjoy!

If you are in town for business this a great location to catch fresh air. It's very close to downtown and the 2 mile loop is good for a walk or jog. Plenty of birds including an eagle's nest near the northern entrance to the park.

The park is pretty big. There are many roads with plenty of restrooms and parking areas close to the lake. There are also many trails for walking and several playgrounds for kids. There is also at least one "beach" area, where you can swim.

Love going with my husband Walk. Has a great Walking path for people and dogs love walking it's great roomie love that you sitting on the wall long The water

I absolutely love Gray's Lake! I have always felt very safe to go there and do runs around the lake! It's nice that they have a water fountain and bathrooms available.

I grew up in Des Moines, Iowa. One of the best memories that I have about Des Moines is the Gray's Lake Park. It has improved over the years. This is a perfect hangout place for families and friends. I wish we had more recreational places like this in Iowa.

LOTS and LOTS of locals come here since it is just south of downtown. Lots of runners after work, lots of families on weekends, and lots of swimmers and dogs in the summer. quite busy on a nice day but worth the crowds for the beautiful lake and trail system.

This is such a nice park to take a walk in and enjoy the surroundings and the view of Des Moines. There is a small beach and is family friendly!

When I travel on business and stay near the airport, this park is a great place to take a stroll or jog. Their is a paved path all around the lake. There are a couple of small beaches which look quite nice. I am never there in the summer so have not swum in it. I've seen lots of families hanging out and plenty of other friendly walkers and runners. Great place to unwind and move around before heading back to the hotel or to dinner.

Nice spot in the city, mostly quiet trail. easy access for a quick walk.

I was in Des Moines the other day visiting family & friends and was taken to this place. I was really impressed with what I witnessed. This place is "only" 167 acres big but it sure didn't appear to be that small. I have hiked in every state park in Iowa and let me tell you folks, being at this city park is just like walking/hiking at a state park. Don't judge a park by saying its located within the city limits. I was really impressed with this place. Of course, now that its November, in Iowa time and warmer days are quickly passing us by so I had to make the most of my day. I found out that in the Spring and Summer, this place also opens a concession stand selling food and drink and other stuff. This park also has boat and sailboat and bicycle rentals; fishin is permitted as is swimming. There is a beach here with no lifeguard on duty do be aware of that. Dogs on leashes are permitted but owners are warned to pick up after your dog. I really enjoyed walking the 1.9 mile paved loop that surrounds the park. Parking is abundant and plentiful with many handicapped spots everywhere. The park is open in Spring and Summer from dawn until midnight. In fall/winter its open only from dawn to dusk. This park is located at the SW edge of downtown Des Moines, Iowa. The state capital of Iowa for those of you who don't know. All in all, I had a great time here. I saw many people walking or running or socializing. Rollerbladers and bicyclists; people with dogs of all sizes; a nice day to get out & enjoy life. In my opinion, this place was a great day hike.

the fact that this park goes over the water makes it entertaining. i noticed a lot of health conscious folks unloading and riding their bicycles in a safe environment a nice clean set-up a great place for a nice walk

Gray's lake has so much to do! walking trails, fishing, and paddle boating are just a few options for the whole family. With the new underpass walk trail opening up to Waterworks Park, this is the place to enjoy the outdoors in the greater Des Moines Area. "Like" their Facebook page for details on night events at Gray's lake.

Gray's Lake has so much to offer Des Moines! We took our kayaks on our last visit. It's a great place to walk your dogs, hang around on the beach, etc.

This place is well manicured and extremely busy with people enjoying all it has to offer. Not crowded - just lots of people.

The trails around the lake are wonderful. While they are especially well suited to pedestrians they work for cyclists as well. The bridge over the lake is a work of art. A spot the city should be very proud of. One would never no it was for years the site of a flooded out derelict hotel.

I could sit here ALL day, this is such an amazing place. It is so beautiful and i feel like there is something for everyone to do.There were so many places & trails to walk, run or bike ride.I felt so relaxed when i was here, that i didn't want to leave.

Excellent hiking path, paved, and has a long bridge that makes the view of the park. There is boat rentals, a small beach and lots of family relaxation.

My husband and I enjoy going here to walk or ride bikes. It's a wide trail and makes a loop although there are off-shoots to other trails if you want to explore. Walking around the lake there's a breeze typically. It can be crowded. It's a little over 2 miles around.

Relaxing walk around lake in central Des Moines. Hard Surface path. Sand beach, restroom facilities, paddle and small sailboat rental. Light food service. Security alerts and lighting. Safe - there will generally be other walkers, bikers, online skaters, too!

Right in the middle of Des Moines, Iowa is a scenic park and lake. There is a 2 mile walking trail around the lake with a memorial bridge across one part. The trail joins a trail that connects with the downtown area and another that joins a bike trail that goes through Water Works Park across Fleur Drive. The walking path has sunny and shady segments with a large picnic area with many shade trees. There are pedal boats and bicycle rentals. Above the rental and snack areas is a covered seating area to meet with friends and view the beautiful lake with the Des Moines skyline in the distance. Enjoy the sandy beach on the north side of the lake that has bathhouses available. There is also a playground area for children on the north side. There are four parking lots with nearby restroom buildings that are well maintained.

I like to walk and talk with friends but sometimes when I want to walk my friends aren't available. That's when I like to go to Grey's Lake because others are walking there too and I don't feel like I am walking alone. I enjoy seeing the people walking their dogs and, of course, the Eagles in their nest.

My husband and I drive from NW Des Moines a couple times a week in the Spring and Summer to walk the 2 mile paved trail around Gray's Lake. Yesterday all four parking lots were full forcing others to get creative in finding places to park, so they could walk, picnic, kayak, bike, roller blade, or just curl up in a hammock, enjoying the beauty of the park.
It's a great place to bring children, dogs, your lunch and just enjoy nature in the middle of a bustling urban center.

A large lake with paved walking/biking trail. Fun for all ages. Can swim, kayak, paddleboat too. Took us about 45 min to walk the whole thing.

You can walk all the way around the lake. Nice swimming area. Paddle boat rentals and lots of area to just simply hang out and enjoy a nice day. Many downtown workers use it for a nice walk or outdoor lunch. Very nice and safe area.

Love this area, great 3 mile, mostly flat walking trail around a pretty lake. Lovely pedestrian bridge that is colorful, recreation rentals available such as stand up paddle boarding $5 for 30 minites, kayaks, sail boats, peddle boats. Very clean park with lots of families, runners, bicycle riders, always a pleasure to walk around this beautiful lake with lots of parking, trees, shade, and an occasional bald eagle.

We think this park with its lake, trails, and water works is an excellent recreation and leisure park in the capital city.

I love this park. There is always lots of people walking, riding bikes, having picnics.
It's very clean and it always feels safe.

SO much to do here & bonus - some of it is FREE!
Free: Bike, job, run, rollerblade, play at the park, climb trees, hang out at the beach, watch wildlife/eagles, geocache, people watch, sit on the beach, swim (if you dare swim in Iowa lakes:)
For a fee: kayak, pedal boat, paddle board... I'm sure there are more options in unaware of. We've done the pedal boats & really enjoyed it- love looking at the Dsm skyline from the water.
So many friendly people to meet here!

I used to go here in my youth and it really wasn't much but a mudhole with a hotel near it. After returning and seeing the improvements i was quite impressed . they've added a quite nice walking trail with tributaries to other areas or you can continue around the entire lake with some pretty nice scenery. 3rd best in the nation-----probably not, but well worth a person's time to visit and enjoy.

Great network of biking trails! You can access many other trails from this park.

I run here most mornings it is clean peaceful and a great place to take a family. They also have canoe rentals and paddle bikes

Nice pedestrian path. Almost 2 miles full circle. Great biking venue. Eagles nests sometimes visible.

We took our daughter's puppy around the lake for an afternoon stroll. It was beautiful, peaceful and a perfect distance. I loved that there were bridges and great natural scenery to enjoy along the way.

Great place to go for a run/walk/rollerblade. The trail around the lake is exactly two miles long, so it's easy to work out how far you've run. You can rent out bikes or kayaks etc at one end of the lake or pop in at Confluence micro-brewery for a quick beer. There are areas to have a grill/picnic with the family & in the summer there is yoga by the lake.

I have loved going to Gray's Lake for a long, long time, and have been able to do so many different activities there. There is a 2.1 mile loop around the lake, which is great for running, walking, or rollerblading. It's fine for cycling, too, though I would generally recommend taking one of the many paths that split off from the main lake loop for bicyclists, mostly because they're much longer a typically less crowded.
The lake itself is great for activities, too. There's a beach there, which I see people using regularly. I typically head to the dock to rent a paddleboard or kayak (they have canoes and other equipment, too). They supply you with everything for a fair price (I think to SUP costs $5 or $10 per half hour per person).
It's a beautiful place: the pedestrian bridge is gorgeous, especially at night. The lake always has wildlife in/around it, including bald eagles that have nested there for years.
As far as amenities, there is ample parking and multiple entrances depending on where you want to start. There are picnic tables on the east side of the lake, and above the equipment rental area on the south end is a great, partly covered area with tables, as well. You could easily spend an afternoon here. I definitely have on many occasions!

Very nice and calm place to visit! Very well taken care of nice place to visit! Nice place for family!

This lake side is very nice on the way to Des Moines Airport and easy to chip in through downtown. The place is good for boating,, fishing, running, walking even for pets it will be a relaxing place. Love to walk over the bridge. Winter time will be chilly.

Grays Lake offers evening paddle boating. My wife and I went out during a full moon and had a spectacular evening. Great date idea!
Great place to take a run or walk--love the trail here and the bridge. The view of downtown Des Moines is terrific.
