Completely agree with another reviewer regarding this beach. It is ghetto and dirty. The bathrooms horrible. I saw one lady naked washing herself around the bathroom sinks. She was barefoot! No way would i be barefoot in that bathroom! It is really gross. One thing I did notice is there were several people with pop up tents which annoyed me bc I went out and purchased an umbrella bc I didn't think I could use my tent. I saw at least three or four in the area i was in and park rangers were on the beach so I don't know if this tent rule is in effect. The other thing that concerns me are people on their phones taking pictures or videos. I saw several who appeared to be doing this. Its disappointing as I like the clothing optional aspect but not here.

This is the only beach my husband and I go to for day trips. It's great for people who enjoy the au naturel experience. It is a lovely feeling to sun bathe nude and swim nude. Be sure to bring provisions as it is a long walk and you won't be wanting to go back and forth to the car. It is a carry-in/carry-out program so you must bring your trash home with you. Recently, I noticed that some people had left their trash in the ladies room...NOT cool. This is Federal Land...the reason you can have alcohol and go au naturel is because there are no federal nudity or alcohol laws...but all it takes is one jerk to mess it all up by leaving trash in the bathroom. Go and enjoy Gunnison beach and never have to sit in a wet sandy bathing suit again!

The wife and I returned here for the first time in years one Summer Sunday. It's only a $15 daily fee. Turning at lot G we surprisingly found a spot in the nearby lot. If that lot is full there's a dirt lot a minute drive down the road. By the beach entrance only is a food stand, showers and restrooms. A short pedestrian friendly walkway leads to the wide open beach. From there it's a challenging trek across the beach. A large wheeled cart comes in handy. It's easy to spot where the naturist beach begins as everyone is congregating beyond the clothing optional sign and the textile beach is virtually empty. After finding a space, everyone can be free at their own pace. Since just about all are nude, it doesn't take long to feel comfortable. A definite necessity is more than enough sunscreen to keep the day from getting ruined. We like that everyone minds their own business other than a casual Hi of people passing by. Park rangers occasionally pass by to make sure everyone is behaving. The water is a bit cool for our high standards. We are amazed that a haven like this exists in the modest northeast US and in the shadow of NYC. Maybe this could be a model for future naturist sights in the region. We had a great time here at Gunnison Beach and are looking forward to returning here sometime.

Snack shack open at noon, lots of sand and room for socializing or being alone. Lifeguards and park rangers for your safety and protection. Romantic place for couples, good for families as well who practice naturism. Clothing is optional for those not as adventurous.

Gunnisen beach is incredibly beautiful beach with a fantastic breeze that blows in from the ocean.. and everyone there was a very friendly, laid back bunch!
We're already planning our next day to take a ride back again.. An item everyone should check off their bucket list!!!

This beach us very different from most new Jersey beaches (and I don't mean the nudity). The beach is beautiful and quiet with everyone very respectful (very different than the usual point pleasant crowd). As for the nudity, after a few minutes, you barely notice (other than making sure you don't burn in places that rarely see sun.). Also, one of the few beaches to which you can bring a cooler filed with beer.

I've reviewed Gunnison before, but I was able to get there twice recently, so I will not repeat what everyone says and instead off some brief updates:

PRO
It's a nude beach.
The crowd is very chill - all shapes, sizes, colors. The second of my more recent visits, the whole vibe was excellent. Clearly a lot of regulars and/or regular naturists. Friendly and noncreepy. Really, this is the naturist experience you want. The crowd definitely tilted older, with average age probably 50+, but that suits me.
The water was wonderful. If you've never skinny dipped in the ocean, you MUST try it. The water was calm and a good temperature. I spent most of one visit taking a "walk" in the water instead of on the beach.
It was after Labor Day, so it was free!

CON
First visit - VERY windy. check the weather before going. If winds >10 kt, make sure you have one of those wind barriers.
Second visit - biting flies. They seem to have been more drawn to me for some reason... perhaps that I like to sit by the waterline. I got dozens of bites. I had to spend my time in the water (see above) as the organic repellant I had was strikingly ineffective. I saw a couple people with mosquito nets, so I know I was not alone.

Putting your clothes on at the end of the day. That's always a con!

Went to Gunnison Beach labor day weekend. Beach was very crowded and not many ppl were wearing mask. I totally forgot covid was going on to be honest. 15 dollars to get on. The nude area is in part G I believe. View of the city was nice. The beach had a nice mix of old young fit and unfit. Also everyone there was just having a good time. It is quite a bit of a walk. They do not allow your personal tents. Or atleast they didn't let us have ours. They were very strict on this rule. Its not even a big tent its one for the beach. But they said we couldn't use it. You will definitely get an eye full. Great time though will definitely go there again

It was a somewhat cloudy day but hard to pass up the sand and saltwater with views of NYC, miles of clean sand, comfortable shower/changing areas, convenient parking, and friendly mix of nude and clothed beach-goers. Only room for improvement is some kind of concessionaire--an iced tea or lemonade would have been perfect.

My wife and went late Sunday and all day Monday 8/28, 29. This was our first time to this beach and I was pleased with the free and easy feeling of being on the beach in the nude. We have been to nude beaches in Jamaica but this was a different experience in a good way.
It is a very long walk from the parking to the beach, but you soon forget about it because of the free and easy feeling when you get there. Everyone is nude, there were a lot of people and we soon realized many people like this beach. There is no feeling of being judged or looked at in a negative way. Swimming in the water was great and just being relaxed in the purest form was a good time!

Amazing place!
There was one woman sitting right by the entrance, laying on her back with her legs spread...
But most people were very chilled, friendly and nice!

I took my mom and eldest brother for a beach day. SURPRISE it was Gunnison. She had a great time . Clean beach, respectful people and nice atmosphere .. She wants to go back next year when she is 81
Good times .. It was as if we were teenagers . We had a ball

It takes a while to get her but well worth the trip on a nice day. There are several great beaches in the Gateway National Recreation Area. This one had brilliant sand, a steeply shelving beach (for strong swimmers) but few other facilities were open when we visited in June. $5 per car to get onto the Sandy Hook Peninsula. Be aware there is a nudist beach up here as well.

By Krissi B |

We got there about 5:30am on a Sunday and there was trash everywhere from the parking lot to the beach. I saw one older gentleman picking it up in the parking lot. The bathrooms at that time were immaculate but when we left about 2pm there was waste on the floor of the ladies room. Once you walk to the beach it gets better, it was clean, people are friendly, and there's all types of ages and bodies. We enjoyed ourselves and plan on returning.

By LexGSR |

So, I admit that I came for the CO beach. I'll review it but there's more...

The beach is very nice - soft sand, lifeguards, clothing optional. There were not a lot of people there when I went, as the weather had been uncertain all morning (and it was a weekday). Most of the people I saw were male and most were 45+, although there were a lot of exceptions. I did not speak with many folks, although most were friendly.

And that's something important. I go to clothing-optional beaches for me. I enjoy the experience whether it's crowded or not. But when there are people to talk to, I find them to be very friendly. (When you have nothing to hide... or nothing BUT your hide...) And skinny dipping in the ocean is AMAZING. I encourage everyone to try it.

Downsides: the beach is very broad. It's a good walk to the shore. It's not as bad as some of the reviews here make it seem, though. Just travel light and you'll be fine.

Also, there are some biting flies. They were not greenheads because I mostly did not feel them bite. But I had some welts and regretted not having bug spray.

Something more:
Sandy Hook is really beautiful. It's not just the beach, but also the rugged scrub areas. And the very nice houses across the bay. Really picturesque.

$20 pay online or at the gate.
Cashless!!!!
Lot A closed, lots C is across from the kayak rentals.
Only
Kayak or paddleboard rentals.
BRING YOUR OWN TRASH BAG !!! Seriously not 1 can around.
The day that I went lot c , the truck of the day was ice cream , very expensive .
Literally beach facility nothing fun nothing fancy. Everything is bring your own. Water was perfect , we liked the side with waves. Sand is very hot !!! Watch your feet.

Very long patch for running , riding & relaxing to site see.
When you look up sandy hook beach , this is the area.
Last store before beach is cvs & there's a motel before the exit. I got lucky and saw a bunch of dolphins swim by. Even on a hazy day you can still see nyc.

Not sure what's up with other reviews. Wtf

Weekend after Labor day. Park opened and free. Beach is nice and clean. Long walk to water, and of course alittle chilly. Bring sunblock!!

By Jess T |

Very nice beach. The only thing is if you go off season there isn’t anything open to get something to eat. So I recommend bring something before you pass the bridge.

By Jack T. |

The clothing optional side used to be good, but it has gone downhill. Too many people go to gawk, masturbate and worse. Being naked in nature is about freedom, feeling like a kid again and relaxing. Not sex. Do that in private or somewhere else.

Go to the clothing part of the beach for a better experience.

By Steven O |

This was our first trip to the beach and were weary at first, but it was quiet, the people were friendly, it was a great experience. We went back the following weekend as we were so impressed and relaxed. It's a great way for a couple to spend a quiet relaxing time with others who are there for the same reason. You can bring alcohol , but no glass containers. Since the beach is clothing optional, I suggest strong sun block if it's your first visit. You won't regret trying it. We are hooked.

Great beach to work on an all over tan during the warm months. A well used beach with serious sun bathers working on their seamless tan. These folks come prepared. There is a nice walk from the parking lot before getting to the beach.. pack light or plan to make multiple trips.

By Great-Flying-Owl |

Summer is much different than my previous visits during winter and spring. On a weekday afternoon the beach was busy but not crowded. It is a bit of a hike from the parking lot but I think it is worth it. Make certain to use the restrooms before walking out to the beach. There are no facilities at the beach. Once you get out to the actual beach the north side is for everyone. The southern beach is swimsuit optional. It is a good crowd on both sides. Nothing raucous. Nothing to cause a scandal. Just people having a bit of fun in a safe environment. The lifeguards leave between 5pm and 6pm. By that time the beach was nearly empty. A cool place. There were even families on both sides of the dividing line.

By the way, there is a charge for parking between the beginning of Memorial Day weekend and the close of Labor Day weekend. Currently $15 for a carload, $7.50 for Seniors that already have an 'America the Beautiful' Senior Pass. Seasonal Passes are available for $75 regular visitors and $37.50 for Seniors with the 'America the Beautiful' Senior Pass.

Went on a Saturday for my first time, weather was great, tide was very strong. Unfortunately they had the south end closed for environmental reasons, so a larger group of people were crowded into a small area. all kinds of people there, felt very comfortable, no judgement

By Pablo G |

As I started to walk into the blue mesh path, I noticed a t-shirt for sale on the vending truck at the entrance, reading "NO TAN LINES AT GUNNISON BEACH". I wondered what it meant... I was about 30 yards from the sea shore when it kicked me in the head. A Nudist Beach!. In New Jersey??? I had been to many NB in Europe, but NJ? Well. Let me tell you: One of the best I have been. The culture was clearly defined, with no staring and no picture taking (not even on a cell phone- maybe because there are no pockets to hold it..). Open recommendation for those who enjoy this type of attractions. Just keep an eye on your belongings. The tides come up quite fast on this steep shore, and you may be washed off without warning, extending the experience back to the car... Enjoy!!

As of Friday June 20th 2025, no lifeguards and no swimming signs posted. I asked and received a refund when leaving the facility

My wife and I went to the beach on a Thursday after Labor Day. The walk from the parking lot to the beach wasn't that bad as everyone says. Bring what you need for the day ( food truck was not open). This was are first time so we did not know what to expect. The majority of beachgoers were nude and respectful so we were mostly comfortable in our surroundings. However there were numerous single males about the beach (25%) that at times made my wife feel awkward. We are planning a return visit in the future.

Gunnison beach is now my to-go beach. Have spent two weekends there this summer with my boyfriend and can't think of any reason to visit any other beach, ever! Gunnison beach is on federal land, therefore nudity is legal (unlike other NJ beaches that are on state land). The beach is wide, and there's a long walk from the entrance to water. There are two food trucks, and a station to rent umbrellas and beach chairs. There are no venders on the beach though, so unless you're prepared to walk to the entrance where the food trucks are, bring food/water/snacks. Don't be intimidated about going to a nude beach, there's no pressure. You can take everything off, or leave them on. Everyone is friendly and completely nonjudgmental. This was my first time on a nude beach, and I felt completely at home!

By MitchPhyllis65 |

Gunnison Beach is huge and so is the parking lot. Nice little hike to get to the ocean. This beach is a great area to walk your pet during the off season and no crowds. We went here this past Saturday and the only one we saw without clothing was our dog. The ocean view from Gunnison beach is fantastic. The freighters passing by look as though they are cruising along the beach. The restrooms were still open and clean.

By ajg4753 |

Despite the long death march to the ocean, Gunnison provides an opportunity to enjoy nature, naturally. Yes, there may be one or two "advertisers" but the other 99.9% of the beach goers are friendly, respectful and outgoing. Being nude removes most of the hang ups we carry in our day to day lives. It's really liberating.

By laurahollenbeck |

Beautiful, interesting. The beaches here are beautiful, even in February. You here how dirty NJ beaches are and this beach is perfect, clean and beautiful

By Andrew G |

Definitely something try if it's on your bucket list ... And then onto your regular list once you first try the feeling of freedom from being nude on the beach. The environment is very welcoming, nothing else like the feeling of swimming and enjoying the sand and air without a bathing suit. Must try!

By Nate B |

Was skeptical at first about going, but decided to go by myself this past weekend. The beach was easy to find by following the signage, bit of a walk from the parking lot but wasn't terrible since I had gotten there early (9am ish) before it was packed and sand had heated up. Everybody was doing their own thing on the beach having a good time, I really enjoyed being able to lay out, have some cold beverages, and take dips in the ocean periodically to cool off. Highly suggest lathering up on the sunscreen asap if you're not accustomed to the sun and keep re applying as I did get a bit burnt on my backside. Only questionable thing I saw was the park rangers giving people a hard time about having a 4 sided mosquito net that was 100% transparent, a bit harsh if you ask me. But, other than that I highly recommend Gunnison and I will be trying to get back as many days as possible for the remainder of the summer!

By Ruth B |

Went here yesterday specifically to showcase my dirty bits which are quite delightful if I do say so myself. GREAT choice. Most of CO beaches are loaded with old pervy dudes but this place was about 50/50 lady/dude. Every shape and size was present including a high number of full bush aficionados. Not a fan but interesting to see especially the massive ginger bush I stumbled upon near the life guard station. That bush definitely merited being in a National Park as it was nature gone insane. Any who, trim the taco or burrito and head down to Gunnison for a day of sweet nudie fun.

By Rpr527 |

I exercise there year round and get some beach time in the summer. Nude beach so be fore warned. It's cool

Gunnison Beach at Gateway National Park is a government sanctioned clothing optional beach on Sandy Hook in NJ. One can view the New York skyline from the beach.

By 278jackr |

We went early, 8:30am, on Sat, July 16th. Beautiful day, the parking lot was filling up quickly. It was low tide, water was very refreshing. It's a nude beach. No problem, the people are very friendly and easy to talk to. Beach was full, great day for visiting. The walk to the beach is long, but worth it. Anyone is afraid of visiting a nude beach, there is nothing to fear, the whole atmosphere is relaxed and very friendly. Once, you try it, you'll love it and want to come back.

By angie |

so much fun...we don’t have magazine cover bodies we are just average mom and pop and we felt so welcome, no judgement just having a good time at the beach 🏖 without a bathing suit😉

Our second year going to Gunnison Beach and we love it! It's the only beach in New Jersey that we go to now. Of course, our first visit, a bit apprehensive, being nude. But, by our second visit we were hooked. After you pay admission, its a beautiful ride along Sandy Hook and just follow the sign marked for Gunnison Beach. You will see the food truck, bathrooms and showers to the right. Usually, people drop off their chairs, umbrellas, etc. then park the car down to the entrance on the left. A bit easier than carrying it all the way to the beach, since it is quite a walk. The bathrooms are clean, but be wary of the birds flying around inside, since it is not well lit. The people we have met here are all pleasant. And, you don't have to worry about the shape that you are in. Trust me on this. And, you can drink alcohol on the beach. No glass containers allowed, and remember to take your garbage with you. Very clean beach and lifeguards are on duty. A very comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. There are also people that choose just to go topless or totally nude, or wear their bathing suit. It's all good. A great social atmosphere or even perfect if you want to be alone. Give it a try!

I am 60 yo. Next year 2019 I'll visit this beach. I like to have a good time, for.ex. with some older couple, and have a fun. Does it have on this beach?

By smarc1214 |

I went with my sister, brother in law, and my wife. What a great day. The water was great, the sand if fine, and best of all, I felt completely comfortable going nude there. I particularly like swimming in the ocean without baggy trunks. I wish there were more of these beaches. It was such a good time.

By Frederick S |

So many people have reviewed this unique place that there doesn't seem be much to add. It is a bit remote, well up into Sandy Hook, which itself is off the beaten path. In summer arrive early, really early, on weekends, and by late morning on sunny week days to enjoy a nicely kept beach with great views of Manhattan across the water and interesting surf and shells. Breezy too. Of course it is best known as one of the very few premier nude clothing/optional beaches on the Atlantic coast with a festive, non-judgmental, free atmosphere. Two caveats (and remember there is plenty of swimwear-required beach on either side: 1. The walk from the parking lots is on the long side (15-20 min.), so many use wheeled beach gear carriers to make the trudge, 2. The Park Rangers in vehicles do many drive buys, park there, park in the background-- so it's safe, but "misbehaving" is closely watched for. A small price to pay for the total freedom buzz that for the faithful make other beaches seem tacky. A tiny bit of Europe for metro NY.

The idea of visiting New Jersey’s only nude beach, Gunnison Beach, always intrigued me. Letting go of all inhibitions; lying in the sand and allowing the sun’s golden rays to evenly bake my body, no tan lines; and jumping into the surf with the crisp Atlantic enveloping every pore seemed tempting… And then reality would strike! I mean, really, who the hell would want to see me naked? Most days I don’t even want to see myself naked. I need not have worried at all. My first time visiting, I shed my clothes and inhibitions within 10 minutes of laying down my chair and towel on the sand. This is not a beach full of hard bodies and Brazilian models; it’s chock full of “regular folks” like me. Every shape, size, color, walk of life is represented here… nobody judges… nobody cares whether you have a pot belly and floppy boobs. You are who you are, and it’s all good! So completely carefree, friendly, relaxing and liberating; you’ll be hard-pressed to ever visit a clothed beach again. Summer 2015 was our second season visiting this amazing beach – my husband and I went nearly every weekend from July 4th weekend through Labor Day weekend. We even made some awesome friends this year and now have a regular group to sit with… We call this “Our Happy Place” and it really is!

By Josef G |

In spite of the relatively long walk from the parking lot to the water front this place is my favorite beach hangout in NJ. People are sociable and friendly, the view across the water of Manhattan Island is scenic. Alcoholic drinks are allowed and so is smoking. Beach is clean (for NJ) and facilities are adequate.

By Gary K |

Long walk from entrance to beach. Bring a nice rolling cart with large wheels. Bring snacks and cooler. All trash has to be carried back. There was a full large trash can in the men's room.

Parking often fills up early. We had no trouble since the beach wasn't crowded when we went. Parking is $15. A National Park Service Senior Pass got us in for 1/2 price. There is a ferry from 2 spots in Manhattan to the beach.

Nice view of NYC Skyline on clear day.

Beach is clean. People are friendly. No gawkers seen. Water was nice for body surfing, swimming and cooling off. Beach was patrolled by lifeguards. Facing the beach, the gay side is on the right.

Beach was not crowded because rain was expected. There was much less rain than expected. About 5:30 PM, there was a downpour. It was refreshing since it was about 88 degrees outside. Lifeguards cleared the beach because lightning was expected. About 45 minutes, people were able to return.

You may be photographed. A lot of people were taking photos and selfies.

By Ida A |

My husband and I visited the beach on Memorial Day weekend with our 6 month old baby. Surprisingly it wasn't too crowded. We got there early and left in the afternoon as it started to get more crowded. It was easy to find, we did have to pay $15 to park but the signs were very clear as to where to park for the beach. He walk is a little more than we typically like to walk to the beach and carrying all our gear + a baby was difficult and tiring but overall it was okay. The boardwalk through the wooded area was nice and then the mats on the sand for easier walking through deep sand were extremely helpful. The view from the beach was amazing seeing the lower NewYork skyline. There were several fishing boats too enjoying the water nearby which were nice to look at. The sand didn't get too hot but was rocky. The water was nice but way too cold to enjoy as it was early in the summer. There are bathroom facilities, refreshment stands, and showers at the pavilion before you walk to the beach so plan ahead if you will need any of that because it is quite a walk back.

As far as it being a nude beach, There was a variety of people. A few clothed, some women topless, but mostly full nude. Most people were older 40+. Not too many other young couples. There were ALOT of homosexual men, especially the further south you went on the beach. It was an okay place to bring a baby too it was pretty quiet most of the time so when he cried I felt as if I needed to calm him down very quickly not to upset the calm atmosphere. Later in the afternoon people started playing music, playing games, and walking around more. The People were nice, maybe too nice at times, as we kind of just wanted to be left alone. But they were super friendly and offered anything and everything we needed for our baby.

Overall it was a good trip,if we ever find ourselves in New Jersey again we would probably go back.

By slpsomm |

VERY crowded. Wall to wall people. Everyone almost touching each other. Some pretty loud people and many people drinking and hiding it from the rangers.

By podrozniczka60 |

And so i here it is the only NJ legal nude beach but off season as we did it it does not matter. All you get to see is the beautiful beach, relaxing seashore. As a South Jersey beach frequenting individual I am not surprised by the beautiful sand and nice quality of the beach. The beach is very wide. It is a great place to walk off season.

Walk Gunnison in the winter and experience the beach without all the visual static of the warmer days. I was out there for hours and saw no one else on the beach. The amazing variety of debris that’s pushed up at the highest tide line will work your mind in ways staring at your cell phone can’t. Ranging from drift wood from a Tolkien world to creepy lost toys, you can hang out and ponder it, with the NYC skyline visible all the time, and a steady amount of maritime traffic to watch. You’ll also encounter a some washed up trash. I captured a few jersey tumbleweeds and stuffed them with trash. (I’m more of a “remove all traces” than a “leave no trace” person, no days off in this career). You’ll be taking that trash out of the park, as there’s no legit place to dispose of trash inside the park. It’s peaceful out on Gunnison in the winter. Find a big piece of drift wood blocking the wind and lay down on the beach for a nap. No one’s out there to bother you.

By Jennifer C |

FYI-
They banned alcohol this year.

Also, if you bring a windbreaker, make sure you only set it up in a straight line. The park rangers were making anyone that had them set up in an ‘U’ shape (and sometimes a ‘L’ shape) rearrange them into a straight line. They claimed it was a tripping hazard if they weren’t straight.
I would think lack of alcohol would eliminate people tripping.....Love those national park rangers - looking out for our wellbeing....oy!

By Joseph B |

Been going there for 10 years. Nice place to just lay back and relax. National park so alcohol legal on beach.Patrolled by park service. People of all age groups, families ,etc..Long walk to beach so cart is helpful for cooler etc. People very friendly. Need to get there early as there is limited parking and when full park closes incoming gates. Gunnison parking is probably the first area to fill up. Just like being naked and having no tan lines!

My husband and I had wanted to try a nude beach for awhile and discovering one so close to home like Gunnison seemed ideal.

We planned this particular beach vacation as a belated 30th wedding anniversary celebration. The Husband was more excited than expected to visit our first nude beach. After reading reviews, we decided to visit anyway.

Firstly, yes, it IS a bit of a long walk, but if you plan on loading yourself down with a lot of stuff, it'll seem longer. The key is to pack lightly and not bring a lot of heavy stuff to carry then the walk isn't so bad unless it is a busy holiday weekend.

Secondly, they DID make the "walkway" longer and it IS a help but it is narrow so you may have to walk single file on either side of it so as to not stomp through the sand.

Thirdly, I only saw one of the Rangers and a vehicle patrolling. We saw more of the lifeguards than of the rangers.

Fourth, the beach was really very clean for the most part but there were a few spots were people did not take their garbage with them and it made for a bit of a mess on a windy day.

Now, as for the nudity ...

At no time did we see any lewd behavior nor anything risque. The beach was surreal and by this I mean you saw a lot of different people from all walks of life, of all ages, and of all races just being nude. But the best part about this whole experience is that everyone was relaxed and very laidback. It was a peaceful experience. No one was super-model-esque because clearly if they WERE, why not go to a PRIVATE beach? But the people who WERE there were singles, couples and even a few families. Everyone was so cool. There was no pretentiousness and everyone accepted everyone as they were. Of course everyone were curious and you may get the occasional glance or stare, but the beach goers were respectful, no one bothered you except to say the occasional 'hello' or nod as you passed by. Some made small talk by asking where you were from and 'how do you like it?' or to answer a question about the area. We met some really nice people.

For a first time experience, it was more than I could have hoped for. We enjoyed ourselves being on the beach and swimming in the buff. I don't think we could go back to a beach and wear a swimsuit ever again. We'll definitely go back again and are already planning visiting again next summer. The Husband wants to make this an annual thing and I heartily agree!

I'm Impressed!!!!
I actively search out opportunities for nude sunbathing and all that New York threw up was Jacob Riis Park Beach but I’m not convinced this is still allowed. However, jump on a ferry from East 35th St jetty and 45 min later you can be in the Gateway National Park, a 5 to 10 min free shuttle bus later you are at the path to Gunnison Beach, New Jersys’ LEGAL cloths optional beach. The following is my experience on Mon 25 Jun 2018 in glorious weather:

Lots of reviews talk about the “long” walk, it isn’t. The reality is paved path from car park to rest rooms/showers is 200 yards, 200 yards to beach on matted surface then 200 yards to the water. Only 600 yards to access such a gem of a beach is nothing.

The main beach area is about 200-250 yards deep but at the moment only about 250 yards wide as a large part of the beach is fenced off to the South due to nesting birds (typically mid June to mid August but does vary). When the whole area is open the beach will be about 1 mile wide by the sea, possibly more.

I arrived at about 10:00 and was amazed at how many couples and single females there were. There was also quite a wide age spread, not just the usual mass of elder men. There was a constant stream of people arriving all morning and well into the afternoon. Less than 12 people, including 2 families, were on the tiny clothed area (also blocked off to the North due to the birds) and most sat right by the nude area. Why not, the Life Guarded swimming area is shared by both the clothed and clothing optional sections. There was a bit of a blurring of the boundary between the two areas on the sand with several nudist setting up just inside the clothed area, and why not, there is no wall between the two so naked people are visible from all of the currently open clothed section and some of the clothed were only wearing tiny G-strings anyway.

The Rest rooms are large and modern with cold showers outside but are outside the nudist area so you are required to cover up and when busy eg weekends are patrolled by Park Rangers. Girls are required to cover their breasts but guys can get away with a G-string. There was also a fast food concession.

There are rules banning the use of closed tents/shelters etc i.e. you have to be on show (presumably to stop any lewd behaviour), unless the Rangers want to admire all the naked bodies :-)

This is a great nudist beach which was clearly popular as demonstrated by the 100’s of people of all ages making use of it mid week. I will be back as soon as I get the chance. If you have never been nude in public this would be a great beach to experience social nudity and nude sunbathing but be warned, once you try it you will actively seek out more opportunities and shun wearing horrible uncomfortable swim wear :-)

If you like to be natural this is the place for you. Only problem is it gets very crowded when part beach closed for rare birds, when open walk for a long way, gorgeous!

By Jaycera |

Our visit to Gunnison was enjoyable, but not as special as our visit to other naturist beaches in Florida and other areas of the world. Perhaps our couple of days there were "unlucky", but it was not very crowded and seemed to attract a handful of creepers or folks there for the wrong reason, ESPECIALLY after 5pm. We would try it again as it's the only naturist beach option in the northeast, but much prefer Florida's beaches by comparison.

I became a HUGE fan of Gunnison Beach, Sandy Hook this summer.

If you like the beach and sun and have no hang-ups with nudity than this is the place for you.

Gunnison is "Clothing Optional" you don't have to be nude but about 90% of the individuals on the beach are nude. However if you choose not to get nude that is okay, no one will look at you funny or ridicule you.

There are all body types here(All Shapes & Sizes). There are rules you should follow when are at a clothing optional or nude beach, you can look them up online. Most are are common sense but sense isn't so common now-a-days.

It Is a solid 2 hour ride from Philadelphia. It cost $15 to enter (Summer 2015). Once you pay at the entrance, Gunnison Beach parking is a few miles down the road. Keep your eyes open for the signage.

Once you find the parking lot, it is a "VERY LONG" walk... so pack light or get one of those rolling carts with the big wheels for the sand.

There are restrooms before you start the long walk to the beach. I suggest to stop to use the restrooms before you take the long walk to your spot on the beach.

Purchasing food is pretty much non-existent, so pack your own food/snacks and beverages.

If you have any questions, the regulars are pretty helpful and you will be able to spot them almost immediately.

I always go mid-week (Wed or Thurs.) and it is not crowded but heavily attended and parking on weekdays are not an issue. I heard weekends get crowed and they run out of parking and you can't get past the entrance gate until some of the cars leave.

So if you have always wanted to try nude sunbathing in a friendly and non threatening atmosphere, then Gunnison beach maybe the place for you.

Pros: Lots of space, large parking lot, semi clean

Cons: No food, food truck was closed on a Wednesday. Loooooooooooonng walk to beach from parking lot. And to end on the sand is even worse. Don't be out of shape. The flies were a major problem, they were aggressive. They bite so bring bug spray and not the weak kind.

Beautiful sunset, spend more than 1 hour with family on the beach, see old building and take pictures. Sun bathing is the best way in the evening

After spending a June Friday in Manhattan on business, I was pleasantly surprised when my husband decided to drive down from Boston after work so we could have a nude beach weekend at Gunnison Beach. It took about an hour and a half to drive to a hotel near Sandy Hook, NJ.

The first thing I noticed is that the signage at Gunnison Beach leaves much to be desired. When walking from the pavilion onto the beach, there are signs prohibiting alcohol and admonishing people to keep the volume of audio devices low, but there is nothing indicating that it’s a clothing-optional beach! Similarly, when leaving the beach, there is no sign indicating that clothing must be worn beyond a certain point. Somehow, people seemed to know where the imaginary line is delineating the clothed and unclothed sides. The only relevant signage is near the water line.

The nude beach frontage is only about 300 yards long. The south end (to the right when facing the water) has a sign forbidding access because of the presence of endangered species. Beyond the north end is about a 25-yard stretch of clothing-required beach before another sign forbidding access because of endangered species. About 1/3 of the nude beach (on the south side) is a de facto gay beach, with 95% of the people being male couples.

There is a lifeguard stand with room for 3 people at the north end of the nude beach. The lifeguards were clothed – with the female guard sporting a very cheeky bikini.

The sand extends 600 – 800 yards from the waterline to the dunes. There are two dune lines. The one closer to the water has several breaks where people and official vehicles can pass through.

My husband and I prefer to be out of hearing range of other people, so we set up near the dunes. We were at least 50 yards from the nearest people.

This was our first chance to be naked at the beach since our winter vacation. The weather was great – nice and warm with low humidity. It felt wonderful to lie on the beach and walk around without a stitch of clothing or a care in the world. We happily displayed our hard bodies. The park rangers who patrolled the beach in Jeeps and one-person ORVs passed close by us slowly many times.

There were about 2-3 thousand people on the beach each day, most of whom were crowded near to the water. But there’s so much sand between the water and the dunes that it’s easy to find a spot all to yourself, if that’s your preference. We had a great time – alternately as relaxing and as exciting as we wanted.

We didn’t spend much time in the water because, although the water was warmer than it is in New England at that time of year, it was still more exhilarating than delightful.

One piece of advice: Don't expect to see much eye candy. Not many people there had the kind of body that would warrant a second look. Do what I did: Bring your own eye candy!

Speaking of things to eat, there were two food trucks in the pavilion area - which is outside of the clothing-optional boundaries (apparently, although as noted above, there is no signage indicating this).

The crowd thinned late on Sunday afternoon and the patrols became less frequent. Our beach weekend had a very happy ending before we headed to the car for the drive home.

I was there a couple times recently. The last, there was almost no one there... 2 couples, one family, and a few solo men. Very calming. I am mostly posting because one of the couple consented to a very nice picture that I wanted to post. (The footprints in the foreground are mine as I went to ask permission before snapping the shot.) Idyllic.

By Simone A |

Decent beach. Access to bathroom and some food trucks. Rentals are available after you park.

It is clothing optional - people will be fully nude.

Arrive early. The parking lot gets full. There is a long walk from the parking lot to the beach area, but once you hit the sand there is a blue sand sidewalk (I forget what it’s called). You can drop your stuff off from the Main Street before you park so that you don’t have to drag it so far.

By Bare Chested |

This is a good spot to shed your inhibitions and your clothes. All shapes, sizes, and shades of people can be seen here in the altogether. I love the feel of the sun and wind all over my body, and the lack of a bathing suit is a definite plus for me. The beach is a bit of a drive up the hook and a walk from the parking lot, which I am told can fill up on the weekends. However, once you pass the Clothing Optional sign and lose your bathing suit, it's all good.

By Great-Flying-Owl |

We liked it because it was open to all comers. For those that wish to be nude they can. Those that wish to wear suits can. No hassles. The beach itself is very nice and fronts directly on the ocean.

By Aaron20152016 |

We went here for a third time. Beach is clean but small. It's carry in and carry out. The walk from the parking lot to the beach is grueling in the heat. The people are great and not much riffraff but there are some gawkers which is expected at a nude beach. Just beware that if you go there, it is not illegal for people to take pictures since it is a public place. Just don't be surprised if you see naked pictures of you on the internet.

By rubyesq2000 |

Kind of cool there is a nude beach still in NJ. Definitely do not bring the kids. Wasn't anyone there in February, but I am told it is still open in the Summer.

By natcpl |

Gunnison Beach is located in Sandy Hook Recreational area in New Jersey across the water from New York. It is one of the only official nude beaches on the east coast of the United States. The beach is beautiful. When entering the sandy hook recreational area drive all the way through past many textile only beaches following signs for Gunnison Beach. There is a huge parking lot there for Gunnison. Make sure you remember to bring everything you need to the beach because its a bit of a walk from the car to the beach. From the parking lot, at the entrance to the trail to the beach, is a large bathroom facility with picnic tables and outdoor showers.

The beach itself is wide and sandy. There is a shallow sand bar that stretches from the beach out into the water which is nice to walk out in. The beach services have been slowly restored since the superstorm. Concessions have returned to the beach and life guards are on duty.

Gunnison is a nudist beach. Basically 99% of the beach goers there are nude. Which makes for a very relaxed environment. In the past few years, there have been reports of increased police presence at the beach harassing some beach goers. We have not so far witnessed this.

Overall, Gunnison is one of our favorite beaches to visit during the summer. The beach is beautiful, you can see New York across the water, and the freedom to tan and play naked in the sun and sand cant be beat.

By John |

My wife and I were ending our week in New Jersey and decided to take a ride to Sandy Hook. The beach was vey crowded the day we were there (not much room between us other beach goers). Not sure if that was the normal crowd, or a result of a long holiday weekend. The parking lot was very far from the beach and then there is a long walk form the facilities to the actually beach. If you are looking for a quiet nude beach experience this is not the spot. Lots of loud music, people constantly walking back and forth to the water with close proximity to you.

BTW - parking was $20 for the day. They should have a lot much closer to the beach.

On a good note - you can see the NYC skyline on a clear day.

By Josh-Vron |

Gunnison Beach is a clothing optional paradise and is not too far a drive from NYC. We have been regulars at this beach for 2 years and just can't get enough. We go almost every weekend. Everyone is respectful, although you do see the occasional creep. No one really bothers you and everyone is very nice and friendly. The walk from the parking lot to the shore is long and treacherous (it's like walking through a desert), and there is no boardwalk or anything so it is crucial that you pack a cooler with your own water and food; there really is no place to purchase items once you're on the beach. There are 2 food trucks at the beach entrance, but it is quite a walk from the shore so make sure you are prepared. The bathrooms are also far, located right next to the food trucks. Despite the long walk and lack of facilities, this beach beats all others. There is no free-er feeling than spending a day on the beach in your birthday suit surrounded by fun, friendly people.

By Lyoder11 |

Gunnison Beach is a nice beach and is clothing optional for most of the beach. Walking out to the beach if you go to the left, that side is the clothed side. As everyone says it is a long walk from the parking lot to the water. It is a very large beach and some of it is closed for the summer due to the nesting birds. When it is opened it is a nice walk down the beach for a long time. Alcohol is prohibited and if you bring a windscreen it must be in a straight line (no U or L shapes).

I have finally found my happy place and it's Gunnison Beach. I'm not a naturist at all but I've have always considered trying nude bathing, it just sounds so good. I've always assumed you have to be in perfect shape and I've been very body conscious being a big guy and a bit over weight however in the last three months I dropped about 15lbs cycling 15-20 miles each day, and what a difference it's made. I'm still big but it made me feel really good about myself. I found out that there is a 12 mile cycle path on sandy hook, and a nude beach, so decided to go there. Be aware it takes forever to drive the last half a mile or so to the park entrance as you have to pay to get in. It took me 90 minutes, which is why I didn't give 5 stars, so be prepared to sit patiently or go really early. I parked in Lot G and took my bike ride which was awesome and ended up doing about 16 miles and then headed to the beach. It's a bit of a hike, so travel light, and the sand gets really hot. There's a stand where you can rent chairs and umbrellas for a reasonable fee, toilets, showers and a food truck before you walk onto the beach. I found a nice spot and looked around. Literally all ages, body shapes and sizes. If you have any concerns about body image, go to a nude beach, throw away any misconceptions you might have, it's the best therapy and feeling you could ever have. I set up my chair, stripped off and jumped into the ocean. It was absolutely amazing, I just can't explain how great it felt. I looked around and everyone was just relaxing and enjoying a beautiful day on a delightful sandy beach getting an all over tan. It felt like the most natural thing to do. No inhibitions at all. While a few women did keep there bottoms on, the people who were wearing bathing suits actually stood out like sore thumbs. Make sure you use plenty of high spf lotion. There were some really nice people sitting near me (while observing 6 feet of social distancing) and got chatting with a few of them. A few hours passed and it was time to leave but I will definitely be returning and could easily become a regular visitor.

Sandy Hook is conveniently located near the city and is one of the easiest shore points to get to if you want a quick escape from the NYC area. Gunnison Beach provides a wonderful, relaxed, clothing-optional area to sunbathe and swim.

The beach is a long walk from the parking lot and for whatever silly reason the restrooms and outdoor showers are by the road and require that you put on a bathing suit to use them... That said, everything else about the beach is wonderful. It is a broad swath of sand that, provided they haven't blocked off the majority for nesting birds, allows you to take peaceful walks along the beach and get away from the crowds of the guarded area. The waves are usually smaller than other beaches on the Jersey Shore because the beach faces slightly northeast towards NYC/Long Island rather than directly out to the east, making it great for swimming.

The crowds can be pretty large especially on weekends, but it's easy to find an area you fit into with beachgoers self-segregating into a family area, predominantly straight area, sort of party/loud area and a predominantly gay area. You can be as social or as antisocial as you wish and I have even made a few friends on the beach here.

I definitely recommend this beach to anyone who is open-minded and wants to try out a nude beach or anyone who is a veteran of nude beaches.

By LexGSR |

A really great experience - almost perfect weather (70's, mostly sunny, a little windy) brought a good number of folks out but it was not crowded. The water was too cold for a good skinny dip, but that's expected at this time of year. Crowd was clearly experienced/frequent visitors with a high comfort level with the nudity. (I like that.) Definitely a great experience. Only down side: it seems like the walk from the lot has gotten longer somehow!

By Reuven Ronnen T |

Nice idea for relaxing day at the beach, but there are too many people there who only want to take pictures of natural sun bathers.

By Kelly F |

Come alone or with friends/family, you will be sure to have a great time. Be ready for a long walk from parking and food/bath areas, but well worth it.

By KKC |

Husband loves this place. Me, not so much. Strongly agree with others who referred to it as “ghetto” - that’s true for the whole park, not just Gunnison. Ladies room odor will make you gag. Many groups of “regulars” who seems to know one another from other hedonistic pursuits. Not relaxing. In general, people seem to feel entitled to be LOUD. Personal space/loud music/ beach etiquette leave much to be desired. Especially crowded on weekends with everyone peeing in the ocean. Sorry, the whole place grosses me out.

By Lester M |

This is the part of Sandy Hook where you can be all natural, clothing is optional in this part where you be free to roam, play, swim, sunbath completely naked!

We visited Gunniston Beach for the first time on July 4, 2021. My wife and I have visited nude beaches in Florida, Greece and Saint Martin. We made the trip to Gunniston from Virginia specifically for the nude beach.
I appreciated reading all of the previous reviews - especially those about the distance to/from the parking lot to the beach and people playing loud music on the beach.

Useful Information:

The beach is much smaller (width) than what I would have expected creating a much denser population. Loud music playing and smoking were issues.

The drive from park admission to the beach is a long way.
.
The ratio of men to women was 10:1; White-to-black/brown was 35% / 65%.

$20 entrance fee was steep but allows for in/out of the park all day.

To mitigate the distance from the parking lot, we left one person on the road outside of the Men's Restroom with all of the heavy items - this cut the distance/hardship to the lot in half.

We brought our own food, beverage and plenty of sunscreen.

Park Rangers patrol (on foot and truck) looking for alcohol. If you are discreet and bring a small quantity, you should be OK. We poured our beverages in to metal Yeti containers. We saw a bust where the Rangers confiscated two 1.75L bottles of hard alcohol. Don't be flashy or too loud - don't attract attention.

The blue mesh walkway does help getting to the beach but, it ends at the far North end of the beach - you still need to trek through the sand to get to the middle of the beach.

It was nice having a volleyball court.

Along the surfline on a clear day, you can see the Brooklyn skyline.

Overall, a 3 out of 5 for the reasons above.

By chazzster |

This is a clean beach, on the ocean (not the bay). Bit of a walk from the parking, so be prepared for the walk (on a hot day, you must have sandals, sneakers or something for your feet. Also, make sure you have one of those huge tire type coolers, or you'll be dragging it through the sand for hundreds of yards. Great place to meet people who are naked, if that's your thing. Do not bring the kids or your parents.

By Kevin M |

you can RENT KAYAKS and PADDLEBOARDS by the hour day/week from guys at SanydHookKayaks.com! Book online and they pick you up anywhere in park w shuttle! We took ferry and paddled at their location on spermaceti cove!

By lilchicken |

The people are friendly and laid back. You see all kinds of body types, mostly middle age people. I was a little surprised to see children, but whatever. The walk from the parking lot to the beach seemed long, especially if you're carrying a bunch of stuff in the hot sun on the lumpy sand. Bring sun screen and I would recommend a beach tent or umbrella, especially if you plan to stay several hours. I got mild sunburn my first visit here, but on my second visit I bought a beach tent. It's refreshing to dip in the ocean occasionally to cool off from the hot sun. Also, bring lots of cold beverages. I plan on making this a weekly weekend trip for the remainder of the summer.

The gun emplacement is still fairly well preserved with a replica in place to view... A nice place for the look and feel of a shore battery, but be careful if you choose to venture towards the water... Gunnison isn't one very few federally sanctioned nude beaches remaining.... So, be warned.

By thessemer |

Went 1X last year and 2X this year. Atmosphere is so relaxing as everyone on the beach is nude. Only disturbing part is the occasional male parading in and out of the crowd in an excited state (if you know what I mean), Make sure you have plenty of sunscreen and cold beverages. Emjoy.

Best clothing optional beach in the world! Enjoy the sun. Have fun. Be free. Gunnison beach has it all!

We went twice while in the area. The beach is beautiful. Make sure to arrive early if going on the weekend. It is packed.

By Shirley G |

I fly from Eugene, Oregon to Newark Airport one day, Gunnison Beach the next day and the following day I fly back to the West Coast. WHY would anyone do that? Because Gunnison Beach at Sandy Hook is fantastic.

On a clear day you can see the New York skyline. Unlike the West Coast ocean the water is warm. The sand and pebbles on the beach are unlike anything on the west coast.

Be respectful...take no pictures of others unless you ask first.

The clothing optional beach is clearly marked. Please abide by the rules as we have so few nude beaches in the US we don't want to loose this one due to inappropriate behavior.

It is a carry in - carry out beach. Meaning no trash cans so carry out all your items, trash and whatever. Bathrooms are located close to the parking area. Also a water spike to wash your feet before heading to your car.

This beach is my all time favorite clothing optional beach.

By Aaron20152016 |

We went on a Saturday. Beach was extremely crowded. We arrived to Sandy Hook at 9:30 and we waited almost a half hour on line to get in. The beach was crowded and people weren't socially distancing. They definitely did not cut off entry after half the beach was filled. There was still a line of cars going in when we left at 1:00 p.m. The beach itself hasn't changed much but the walk to the beach is a little easier now that they extended the blue pathway. There were a lot of people playing loud music. Also I think it's ridiculous that people go there but don't get nude.

By Serenidad Q |

I went to this beach for the first time last year and loved it! It was also my first time at a nude beach period so I wasn't sure what to expect but it had a very laid back, come as you are feel to it. Everyone was friendly and just enjoying the beach. Couple things to note, this is a family friendly beach so there were a couple kids here and there. A little strange for me but to each his own. Another note is the walkway does NOT go all the way to the beach so there will come a point where you can't roll anymore and have to carry everything you bring! Unless you have one of those awesome (but expensive) wheeleez beach carts, be prepared for a little work out. I suggest you bring a sun tent & chairs you can carry on your back, a cooler for your food/drinks (alcohol is allowed) and enjoy!

By Michael T |

Gunnison is known for its clothing optional policy. The only beach in NJ with this allowance. It's the second to last beach on the hook, the one before North beach. It has a large parking lot down the street a bit. The lot is large, but it fills up on nice summer days. There are also changing rooms and facilities. You can buy grilled hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks (including beer) on the beach. Food available on the beach because the facilities are what seems like a mile away from the ocean. To get from the parking lot to the ocean, it can seem like crossing the Sahara. Gunnison is quite secluded, making it a good spot for nudity. As for the nudity, really, have you been to a nude beach? Most people should have their clothes on at all times. If you are a nudist or want to behold the variety of shapes people come in, Go! Revel, reveal, observe, critique. Otherwise, skip this beach. The view is better and the beach is closer to the parking lot and facilities at North Beach. ...Also, the farthest portion of the beach all the way to the right is the gay section.

By Anna F |

I have had this nude beach experience on my bucketlist for quite awhile but I needed to find the right beach. I wanted a popular, clean and safe location to bare it all. Gunnison definitely fits this! There is a really friendly crowd of locals.
The walk to the beach is not as bad as I expected (bring closed shoes for the walk if you are worried about sand burning your feet because the majority of your walk is on the actual beach)--this comes more into play if you are there in the afternoon as I can tell the sand would get burning hot.

***NOTE: This was the cleanest beach we went to along the northeast coast road trip from Boston, MA, down to Ocean City, NJ. (including beaches of Cape Cod).
You can find whole shells here, the shell of a crab (it has leopard spots on it!), and see the skyline of NYC in the distance. Oh and I can't forget the huge waves!

We were there in the morning and there were a lot of older people (mostly locals). Like others have stated you truly see bodies of all shapes and sizes. You really are free from judgement and I didn't really feel like anyone even noticed me. I wouldn't lie that I came there wanting to get a bit of attention ;) but not a single guy even seemed to care.

I have been to pools in Vegas where I was topless and in a thong, but dropping my bottoms was a whole new world. The feeling of the wind and sun down there was amazing! Getting into the water and swimming in the nude was so liberating. I truly felt at one with nature and comfortable in my skin. What an awesome feeling/moment! I wish everyone could experience this once in their life.

Also when it comes to seeing older generations in the nude, it gave me hope for the future that I could definitely keep an attractive form at any age (as I am not accustom to seeing older people naked and had previous misconceptions lol).

By Jack B |

This beach has a family fun in the sun area where bathing suits are worn by all. Don't venture far away from this area because Gunnison, because it is a federal park allows totally nude sun bathing. Men and women populate that area and everything is exposed. If you enjoy sun tanning without lines - this is about the only legal beach left. Wear hiking sandals - its a trek to this area, and don't even think of going optional on the way.

I went with a lady friend to Sandy Hook, New Jersey, mostly to go to Gunnison Beach. We did and we had a good time. We went there several times. You have to pay $20/car per day between 8 AM and 6 PM to get onto the Hook to go to any of the beaches/historic sites. I suggest going before 8 AM. Due to the nesting endangered birds, at this time of year the government does not allow you to walk north to North Beach or south to Fishing Beach. We found this to be unnecessarily restrictive, especially since Fishing Beach is 1.5 miles away. They can't give Gunnison a few hundred more yards to the south!?

We did find everyone to be open and friendly and had some good conversations. The beach did attract some men who were trying to "find a date" or find sex. We both found that disturbing at times.

When it was cold, almost everyone is clothed. When it warms up to over 80F, most everyone is nude. The clothed and nude get along seamlessly. Sometimes there was enough interest and people for volleyball games at both volleyball courts. The water was probably high 60sF so most people weren't in the waves and swells for very long. I swam a few times, and it was fun. There is almost always wind and waves so be prepared for that. This particular beach is not conducive to boogie boarding. Try other beaches on the Hook for that.

We overall enjoyed our time at Gunnison and the surrounding historic sites on Sandy Hook that we are planning on coming back there again.

While staying in Red Bank during a hot and humid spell in early June, my husband and I spent two days at Gunnison Beach. The air was ten degrees cooler there, with a steady breeze. The beach was remarkably uncrowded – perhaps only 200-300 people each day.

We walked between the parking lot and the beach wearing only our c-string swimsuits. As soon as we reached the sign for the clothing optional section, the swimsuits came off. I perked up, as my husband's masculinity became fully evident. The stiff breeze surely enhanced the effect.

We might have been the only people under thirty-five years old, and there were more men than women. Two lifeguards were on duty, and park rangers walked up and down the beach once each day. The clothing optional beach front is not wide, as it is bounded at both ends by long stretches of beach cordoned off for protected species of shore birds. It was necessary to bring sufficient food and water, as the food trucks in the pavilion were not in operation.

Some people set up windscreens on the far ends of the beach, blocking visibility from all directions. I imagined what activity might have taken place out of sight. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a windscreen of our own.

When leaving the beach on the second day, there were only three people in the pavilion area, so we rinsed off nude under the outdoor showers. For a lark, we took pictures of each other standing nude near the sign that reads CLOTHING OPTIONAL ONLY IN DESIGNATED AREA ON THE BEACH. One of the people nearby, an older gentleman in a thong swimsuit, graciously offered to take a picture of us with our bodies glistening and smiles beaming together by the sign.

For the walk back to the car, my husband put his swimsuit on – it was a tight fit – but I didn’t bother. Being nude – or topless, as I was all the other times when going between the car and the designated nude beach – would not usually be advisable, but conditions were conducive to pushing the limits. My husband expressed his deep appreciation for my uninhibited nonchalance after we got back to the car.

In addition to the great beach (watch out for nude bathers!) the site offers some restored and viewable artillery installations. Throughout the area there are a number of such installations in disrepair with warning signs to keep away from the hazards; but at Gunnison Beach two large artillery pieces are available for close up inspection. The platforms also allow for a great view of distant Manhattan (on a clear day).

A Very Clean Beach... Lots of parking to get to the beach.. and a lot of friendly people to interact with... What more can we say.. It had sand all the way down to the water... LOL

By John |

We were harassed by Ranger Lovelace for having a ‘Coolcabanas’ shade screen. We have been going to this beach for 5 years, and have had this screen all 5 years. We were asked to take the screen down because it did not comply with regulations. We asked if they had changed the regulations and we were directed to the website. We took the screen down. Then Ranger Lovelace proceeded to take my name, age and state of residency to file a warning to me due to the screen. We left the beach because this was absurd, embarrassing and we weren’t interested in being harassed by this Ranger anymore. He harassed others with the same screen. I looked up the policy on sun screens and ours falls within the 8’ diameter, one support pole as has always been the case.

Others here have described the physical layout so I’ll just mention ambiance and pros and cons. On a warm summer weekend day you can have 2,000 people there. Pluses: well regulated. Lifeguards every 50 !yards so women can feel safe and overt public sexual activity is at a minimum. People are relaxed and friendly. Spectacular open feeling with views of Manhattan and Long Island. Nice sand leading into water. Historical lighthouse to visit. Free access and parking before Memorial Day and after Labor Day. Minuses: after 3pm beach is swarmed by biting horseflies impervious to repellant. Parking areas full by 9.30am so arrive after that and you’re in another lot a mile up the road. Long walk from road to beach across hot heavy sand. Recommend minimalist stuff to carry: towel, mat, sun block, water bottles, snacks, umbrella, all in backpack. Overall: excellent for first-timers and veterans alike. Camping sites available online at recreation.gov for $15 a night if u are coming from faraway but weekend nights are mostly fully booked 6 months in advance, weeknights less so.

Perfect beach for a lazy afternoon, would definitely recommend for individuals looking to get out of the city by ferry.

This place is great.. I've gone 4 times this year and plan to keep going. I feel very comfortable here. Every one is naked!..and you can bring alcohol as long as its not in glass containers. But be prepared to hike to the water..its far

By Jeanette H |

A NPS ranger approached us and told us that our pop-up umbrella tent was no longer allowable under the new rules last year. So we had to take it down immediately, but umbrella rentals stop at 4 pm. Later we just bought an umbrella at Costco for $23. We don't understand why tents are no longer allowed while they are popular at many other beaches. Nonetheless we love Gunnison. Parking lots are huge but it's a long walk on the sand to the actual shore. There is also good camping nearby at NPS Gateway Nat'l Recreation Area (reservations online). Camping is $30/night or half-price with senior discount. Weekdays are less crowded. Camping is on the bike path and you could bike to Gunnison, assuming you could carry your gear on the bike.

Loved it! What a Liberating experience! Used to visit in my 20s, kept my bathing suit on. Was a bit shy. Last time was 2008. Wanted to come back to strip for the full experience. Now, 2020, 3 times in 2 weeks. Once you go you are hooked.
The walk is not hard. Pace yourself and carry light. I had water, sunglasses, a towel and myself. The experience is best if you go alone. All naked strangers. Nice way to make friends. All are there for the same reason.
Arrived at 3, breezy chill in the air, I could not wait to get naked! I set up in the center area. I stripped off my shorts and tank top and was suddenly overcome with such an incredible relaxed feeling. Almost indescribable. The tension of the day melted away. The ocean breeze felt amazing on my naked body.
I sat in my chair soaking up the experience. All equal here. A few gawkers kept walking back and forth past me. Harmless I hope but a bit creepy. As the sun set, you can see the New York Skyline lights. Most people left as the sun set, I stayed. As darkness came, I ran to the ocean and jumped in! Wow! Skinny dipping in the cool ocean water at night is a wonderful feeling. Erotic and definitely freeing. People say they come here to enjoy being naked in public but deep down, we all have those thoughts. My entire body felt the rush, I slept soundly that night, naked of course.
With that said, I highly recommend a trip to Gunnison Beach. Once you start, you will be back again. I hope this unique paradise stays just as it is.

No bathing suit required! This is a nice beach , long walk to the water & take everything you need with you ! Best on weekdays as it’s too crowded on the weekend. Parking can be a long way away. Get there early as the actually close the entrance when it’s full!

Relaxing quiet beach…clothing optional…
Everyone is respectful of your space. This was one of the most relaxing times I’ve spent on the beach as there was no kids running around, it was serene and seeing the NYC skyline was a bonus!

By Inshirah |

Me and my girlfriend truly love this beach we felt so free. We had a great time. The most liberating part of the experience was probably the feeling of being completely free and uninhibited, just embracing the natural surroundings without any judgment. It was so refreshing to let go of any worries and just enjoy the moment absolutely recommend !

By WmM903 |

Nude, clothing optional area of the park. Yep, nude people everywhere. No, you will not see sex on the beach, it is just for sunbathing and enjoying the company of like minded friendly people.

By nilsoneric99 |

I got there early and it was quiet. Over the period of fours hours it became quite the show. Very busy with people. Off season so no life guard but not too many in the water due to bad RIP current. It appeared to have the feeling of a gay pride festival with multiple partners primarily men. It didn't bother me but never saw the beach like that before. Again, like most say, it's a hike to get to the beach but once there it was nice. Dolphins jumping as well as small bluefish. Wish there were bathrooms around the beach area. It was a nice day left around 3pm and still many more people going to the beach. Kinda glad I left when I did.

I've been to Sandy Hook before because the beaches are great. I was aware it is clothing optional since I dated a woman a couple of years ago & we went there for the experience. We don't date anymore so this time I went by myself. Since I keep in good physical shape swimming laps in a Speedo & riding bikes in lycra bike shorts, I have no issues about my body. It is what it is, but after hanging out without swim wear for only about an hour, decided it's just TMI for me. I will go to Sandy Hook again because the beaches are beautiful...but not Gunnison Beach. Only Gunnison is clothing optional!

By Steven |

It's a very popular beach for naturalists. The long 1/2 mile walk from the parking lot, then across the sand, until you finally get to the water doesn't deter the 1,000s of visitors each day that the temperature is warm enough to shed your clothes for a game of volleyball, a dip in the ocean or sunning on the beach to erase your tan lines. I visited one late afternoon near the end of September and the beach was packed with sun worshipers trying to get in their last sun rays of the season.

By Lori D |

1st...everyone is right. The walk from the car to the beach is reaaallllyyyy far. Be prepared and dont carry too much heavy stuff without a cart! The beach was really nice and the people there were a better group than we see in point pleasant. They should have porta pottys or something bc the bathroom is also really far. I also don't like that everyone puts up those expanding wall things around them...I get the privacy but they go up in front of you and block your whole view of the beach. We couldn't even see The ocean 🙄. The beach itself is great and we will definitely be back

By Kevin Adams |

As far a I know, the only legal clothing optional beach in the northeast, of only less than a handful in the US. What a shame that we are so hung up here about nudity, but all types of hate and violence are the norm. With that said I'm so glad we have this beach at Sandy Hook.

I was there yesterday and it was beautiful being among a community of nude beach lovers. So relaxing, friendly and fun. I look forward to going many more times this summer. The water was cold but refreshing and seeing the NYC skyline in the distance is awesome.

Swimming in the water and relaxing in the sun without the restriction of damp wet trunks is amazing.

I hope this beach stays clothing optional for years to come. I'm never so relaxed and free than when I'm there on a lovely summer day. Heaven on earth.

By Murveman |

We went on a weekday because we heard the beach gets packed on the weekends.
It was our first time nude beach and it was a great experience. The regulars are very welcoming, the location is gorgeous, and there was a really delicious liquid nitrogen ice-cream stand just off the beach. My only warning is to bring an umbrella or tent for shade!

We can't wait to go again!

very fun, got turned around because of full lot at noon (was a sunday so) but was let in before 2. lots of people playing volleyball and socializing. cold water for me but that is all of jersey and north lol.

Had a great visit here with my wife yesterday. First time for both of us. Like the others here say, it’s a bit of a walk so be prepared if you visit- above all, bring plenty of water. We visited on a warm September weekday (Friday) so the parking lot (Lot “G”) was about 60% full. After you leave the parking lot, head down the walk to the beach entrance. The first part of your walk (from the parking lot to the beach entrance) is partially paved and partially boardwalk through wood and brush. You’ll then cross the road and find spacious restrooms and about 10 outside showers at the entrance area to the beach. We visited on Friday, Sept. 20- the restrooms were still open (and very clean) and the outside showers worked fine. After the entrance and restrooms/showers, start the long walk through soft sand to the beach. There were plenty of people on the beach but it wasn’t crowded. There were also a handful of people with dogs on leashes (sign says dogs are OK but only after Sept. 15). As for appropriate beach attire, I follow the old adage: “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” In that spirit, once on the beach I wasted no time changing into my birthday suit and it felt GREAT. My wife, who is extremely modest wouldn’t shed her bathing suit, not even her top (I couldn’t help but notice that about 1 in 3 women were topless; most folks-men and women- were fully nude). So you can wear whatever you want- or don’t want; as far as I could tell, nobody really cares. As for swimming, the surf was very rough, complete with rip currents, but a handful of people were in the water so I had to join them. I’m a strong swimmer and had no problem, but I wouldn’t recommend swimming here if you don’t swim well (make that VERY well). There are NO LIFEGUARDS, so you’re really on your own if you go in the water. If you’re not a good swimmer, you could wash up in Manhattan (if you’re lucky) or somewhere across the Atlantic Ocean (if you’re not so lucky), depending on the direction the currents take you. The people on the beach were all very friendly- we talked with a few and didn’t encounter any “pervs” or the like. Age range varied, as did body types- so don’t worry if you’re not a ripped athlete or runway model... just ordinary people here who happen to be comfortable in the clothes they were born in. My wife and I are in our early 60’s and didn’t feel out of place in any way (well, my wife might have been a little uncomfortable but as I said, she’s extremely modest- probably more so than most women her age). In summary, I think this is a very nice place to visit and I hope to be a regular- as for my wife, I’m not sure. As an afterthought- there are no entrance fees at the gate to the park after Labor Day, making September a great time to visit. Highly recommended+++

By Justme |

This will be my first time going. Are you able to bring alcohol and are there hotels around, I’ll be driving far to get to the beach?

By SailSunJay |

The distance from the parking lot to the beach make this only four instead of five. If they had either beach side rentals for chairs and umbrellas or served food on the beach.even with the distance it would be five.

By Aisha V |

Things you need to know: -Nice beach for nude (naturalist) sun bathing
-People are friendly or keep to themselves
-the walk from the showers to the sunbathing spot is long, try not to carry too much with you and wear shoes with a good sole- not just flip flops
- *BRING BUG SPRAY!* We were swarmed by flies that bite and draw blood!

My wife and I went to gunnison beach for the first time saturday april 29th. We are 28 and 30 years old. My wife is somewhat timid and shy and very conservative, but we were close for a wedding the night before and decided to stop by. it was free to get in and park but $15 after memorial day. There was a moderate walk from parking lot to beach. We were suprised to see so many people there for the time of year. Its funny b/c my wife was so worried but she said, she felt awkward because while walking to set up our spot , we were the only ones wearing clothes. We ditched all our clothes right away and she felt so comfortable. The crowd was mostly couples 25y/o to 45y/o with some definetly older. There was alot of single or groups of just girls under 30. Of course there were alot of middleage or older single men too but they all mixed in well. There were younger very attractivee girls and guys all the way to senior women and men. ALL body types. everyone we talked to in passing was nice and no one was misbehaved. It was so much fun strutting ourselves around in the nude. What a blast we both said we'll be back. A few tips, there were no food trucks or provisions when we went and the bathroom only had one stall open due to not being in season yet. Pack food and beer/ liquor but take your trash home and no glass bottles. So much fun, wish more places were like this and less yuppyish

By R W |

Public beaches have life guards on duty. Bring your food and LOTS of water. These services have not been restored after the super storm Sandy. Some food trucks are located on site. Rest rooms and outdoor showers are available. At ten am the park could be closed due to full parking areas. That means that an early arrival should be planned. There is no better sunset in the world.

To be fair, I have a pretty high bar for nude beaches, including those in France, Spain, Croatia, and Greece. Gunnison is nothing like any of those.

That said, I'm not a huge fan of New Jersey beaches in general. They're typically crowded and noisy, with people blaring radios and making SO much noise. In that regard, Gunnison fits right in! And since it's the only viable clothing-optional beach in the region, it draws an incredibly eclectic crowd. People watching is really a thing there.

When our kids were young, we were in search of a place like the family-oriented nude beaches we had experienced in France. We've seen very few children at Gunnison, and I don't think we would have felt comfortable bringing our own. Just a little too edgy.

All that said, there's enough space to find your own plot of sand, and again, I'm simply grateful that the beach exists at all. Rare, but amazing, is the day when you get a clear view of the Manhattan skyline. Worth the trek, just for that.

By Sharon B |

Agree with other reviewers about the long walk to the beach - bring a beach cart with balloon tires if you have to cart anything - and there was only one food truck and a drink vending machine - so bring your own snacks. It is also a carry-in/carry-out beach. The most amazing thing for me was the welcoming attitude and generosity of the beach-goers even when I chose to wear my bathing suit. When I go to the beach, I am in the water more than on the beach and the water was outstanding!

By Peter F |

Sandy Hook is a historic beach area which offers great swimming and water sports. Plenty of folks paddle board and rent kayaks.

By LexGSR |

Fantastic, as always. A great many regulars who are comfortable in their skins make you comfortable in yours. It's normal to be naked!

By cmp304 |

@Justknj - It has been a while since I've been but the really close local motels are a little seedy in my opinion. They are (were) independent, older and not really well maintained. I prefer to stay a little farther away at a mid level chain motel and drive a little. I go mid week and by hitting the beach early and staying late the traffic is not that bad.

By cxcartist |

I have been going to this location for a few years now. Easy access from NYC by ferry ride about and hour. But I have been driving here, it’s easy with all the beach stuff. Arrive early or/and during the week days it’s less busy but don’t be fouled it’s still busy during the week. Gunnison is a nude beach so be aware. Certainly one of the best beaches in the area for me. If you want to be naked it’s up to you but people around will be. It’s a great feeling to have people of all ages (no kids) and walk of life who just want to be free and not be bothered and minding their own business. It’s a national recreation park so no building around you. Just Manhattan skyline that you can spot in a very far distance. There is hiking, biking, water sport and camping as week near by.

By serlingj2000 |

Overall, a very positive experience. Only a couple of people misbehaving, but for the most part, everyone was happy, relaxing, strutting their stuff on the beach. All ages and body types. No need for shame.

By Nude Lease On Life |

Gunnison beach is quite the character! Historically boasted as the "largest clothing optional beach on the east coast of the United States," it is located within the Sandy Hook area of New Jersey. In 2020, new signs were installed limiting the official clothing optional area to a much smaller region than what has typically been enjoyed, though many seem to ignore the signs and take their beach walks far beyond these limits. This seems to work in most cases, as the nearest beaches (also within Gateway National Park at Sandy Hook) are quite a distance away. Despite all of the above, the beach is INCREDIBLY wide (not sure if that's the right word?) from a shore-to-dune perspective. While from "left to right" we may be more limited in nude use, the depth of the beach is astounding. Given this fact, the walk from the parking lot area is also arduously long (and in-season they put down mats to make the walk much more enjoyable), but the overall clothing optional area enables beachgoers to setup further back from the water if all of the "good spots" are already taken.

While parking is ample (daily rates in-season are $15 per vehicle as of writing this, rumor has it they will be increasing to $20 in 2021), on beautiful summer days traffic will back up significantly and it may be difficult to get a good spot on the beach, let alone have a convenient place to park. While the beach is open year round, most amenities are seasonal and include the mats mentioned above, restrooms, showers, and food trucks (although they are all adjacent to the parking area and still a pretty far walk from the beach itself). It is worth noting that the parking fee does not apply in the off-season, or if you arrive very early or very late in the day. In pre-COVID times, dumpsters were available within the parking lot area, but no trash bins were available otherwise -- please carry out anything you bring in. The beach is patrolled regularly by park rangers on a year-round basis, and has lifeguards stationed until 5pm during the summer season.

Speaking of 5pm... it seems Gunnison has gotten a bad reputation for what goes on after 5pm. While Rangers will still occasionally patrol, the beach is known to get a little bit rowdier after hours. Despite having a wonderful view of parts of the New York City skyline, Brooklyn, and the Verrazano-Narrows bridge, and being relatively close (as the crow flies) to these densely populated areas, the beach is still very remote and at least a few miles away from any regularly travelled roadways that aren't part of the national park area. As of 2019, alcohol is prohibited (rangers have been known to actually check your coolers) and they no longer allow tents or windscreens to be positioned in a fashion that completely obstructs the view of what is going on within your camp. This is not to detract from the beauty (and the fact that it's pretty much the only option in the northeast...) that Gunnison can provide during a typical summer weekend where it draws thousands of visitors, but a fair warning that you may not want to visit at odd hours, during questionable weather, or stay too late into the evening if you aren't interested in potentially seeing some borderline questionable behavior. To this end, while online communities of Gunnison regulars do exist, we personally believe the beach could benefit greatly from an ambassador program like what they have at Haulover and Blind Creek in Florida. While we wanted to provide a fair warning in this regard, please don't let this review alone prevent you from visiting the beach and trying it out for yourself!

By Gogon |

We recently spent an afternoon and the a morning at Gunnison. Certainly if you enjoy social nudity, it's worth having a visit. As reported many times in reviews, and well known to us before arrival, there is quite a trek from your car to the actual spot to throw down your blanket or chair. It's at least 3/4 mile. Once you hit the sand portion of the walk, it seems like it will take forever. You do not want to forget something in your car.

The beach itself is very large...plenty of room for all. The size is not only the waterfront, but the overall depth as well. The sand is nice and seemed fairly well policed for trash, but then again this was a Tuesday, perhaps the weekends with many more people would be a different story. On this first afternoon, there was a very strong wind coming up from the South. It blew the sand so hard that you felt sandblasted. Our less than quality beach umbrella didn't stand a chance. Plenty of people there had 3' beach screens set up as they must have known the potential. High winds, blowing sands, and naked bodies lead to grit in places you weren't sure you had. Closer to the water where the sand is wetter and heavier proved to be a bit of relief.

We arrived back on Wednesday morning and the wind was much better. It was very relaxing to just lay out and tune out the world. Interesting to lay out naked and look north to have a great view of Manhattan.

As we have seen at other C/O places we have gone (quite a few around the globe) people are very friendly and actually talk to each other...what a concept. There were couples, small groups, families, and some singles. All ages, all sizes, all everything. Just a nice group of people that enjoy beaching it the way Mother Nature started you

If you enjoy the ocean and want to be nude, give it a try.

By Aaron20152016 |

This was our 6th visit here. We usually make an annual trek as it's the only clothing optional beach in the area. We did not enjoy our last trip though. The beach has become more of a party beach where big social groups meet up. The LGBTQ section was overly crowded. Be prepared to breathe in the scent of marijuana as it pervades the air. Go in the water if you want to escape it. Also no matter where you sit, you are going to hear loud music. Try to sit near music you can tolerate. All in all not. as relaxing and pleasant as a trip to a clothing optional beach should be. Also they increased the parking fee to 20 dollars.

By MW03070 |

Very pleasant beach visit, we found it a little difficult to find the beach, we saw a sign for north beach but not gunnison beach but we did find parking lot G and followed the crowd. It wasn't terribly busy on a weekday. Others have made helpful comments that I won't reiterate. The only thing I would say was the current was very strong (red flag) and I definitely would not swim in these conditions unless you were an exceptionally good swimmer. The surf almost knocked us over hip deep standing.

By switchi21 |

I enjoy the beach scenery. My husband and I was the only one swimming there at that time and people watch

Just being naked on the beach, the freedom was great , the feeling …. Can’t explain it! Just go let it all out

By BHUANG69 |

Came here with a whole bunch of friends to spend a great day at the beach. We came with coolers, ice, beer and food. You need to arrive early (ideally by 9am). After that, the traffic will get messy at the toll booth where you pay for the admission. You are also more likely to get a parking spot at the nearest lot.
After we parking, we hauled everything towards the beach. The board walk ends soon and there was still a long walk to the beach. What we had (heavy beer and ice) did not help us. The sand is very soft and then you will have to work very hard to get to the beach and find a good spot. After finding a spot everything was easy. We spent five hours people watching, ocean watching, eating, talking and drinking. It was very memorable.

Its an awesome place for those who have the heart to be natural. First never knew one existed quite close-by. Sandy hook and the New Jersey shore has a number of beaches but this is different. Nudism is allowed encouraged and natural on this one. Don't think its a place for orgies and the like.. No.. Everyone just seems oblivious of being in their natural state... It was my first time (certainly wouldn't be my last). ! learnt that we come in all shapes and sizes.. and its all perfectly OK. Quite and experince.
As for the beach.. Its salt water.WEasy to enjoy and float in.. Its not the clearest of beaches. It has stones ... lots of stones and the water looks brown... but minimal dirt and artificial stuff. You are required to stay within limits where the lifeguards operate or can see you.
Didn't experience any indecency. LOL well going clothless isn't considered indecency here. Pretty much reduced everyone to being human.. and now I look at everyone on the streets the same way.. We all just plain humans. fancy clothes and styles are nothing. I encourage the brave to try this beach out. G car lot and a walk to the beach.

I’ve lived in NJ all my life (64) & have taken MANY trips to Sandy Hook Beach. My friends have shore houses @ “other” beaches , so I haven’t been here for awhile. The other morning my daughter-in-law, my son & 2 grandkids 13 & 5yrs. went down for the day. I COULDN’T BELIEVE the TRASH that was on the shoreline!! My first thought was maybe they were still getting ready for Memorial Day. The kids zoomed to the water & I, out of sheer mortification started picking up lg bags every kind of wrapper & bottle caps. There was a bottle of URINE!!! This was on D beach. Lord knows how the other areas looked!PLEASE, PLEASE INSTALL GARBAGE CANS!! What’s wrong with some people to TRASH a beautiful beach is beyond me!!

My husband and I spent an afternoon here on a summer-like October day during our drive back to Boston after visiting friends in the Atlantic City area. The location is on a lovely peninsula that comprises the Gateway National Recreation Area. It protrudes into New York harbor and provides a wonderful view of Staten Island and Manhattan. There is normally an entrance fee, but the collection booths were not staffed at this time of year.

There are several beaches on the ocean side, with parking areas designated by letters starting with A. The parking lot for Gunnison Beach fittingly is at parking lot G. The lot is huge and is a few minutes’ walk through a wooded area to a pavilion with showers and restrooms. It takes another few minutes to walk down the path to the beach.

The clothing-optional section of the beach is about ¾ mile long. Signs perpendicular to the shore mark the boundaries with the clothed sections. The path from the pavilion brings you to the left-side boundary which is an imaginary line that was not strictly honored.

There were several hundred people on the clothing-optional section. All were nude except for a few women wearing thongs. On the clothed section, there were about a dozen people wearing swimsuits and an equal number naked.

Most of the beachgoers were middle-aged or older, and men outnumbered women by a wide margin. There were many men who were solo, but there was also a section where they were paired up. The vibe was chill. I didn’t sense any creepiness.

I noticed only one person who was clearly in our demographic (under 30) – a woman (with her older boyfriend/husband) who took frequent walks up and down the beach with, or more often without, her male companion. No one bothered her.

I love being nude at the beach, and I’m cool with men looking at me – admiringly or lustfully, ha-ha – but my husband always goes with me when I walk. That works for me because I enjoy showing him off as much as he does me; he’s quite well put together, if you know what I mean.

The water was a bit rough but warm for the time of year. The view of New York City was spectacular.

When it came time to leave, we walked nude back to the pavilion. The pavilion has men’s and women’s restrooms and common outdoor showers in a patio area in front surrounded by a few small tables and benches. Curiously, we were the only people rinsing off nude; everyone else wore a swimsuit. In fact, we didn’t see anyone else walking nude from the beach to the pavilion. That seemed odd. There were no signs saying that clothing was required beyond a certain point. Furthermore, it would certainly be bizarre if people were allowed to be naked on the beach but required to wear clothing when showering! Presumably the showers were not enclosed and segregated by gender because everyone could see each other naked all day on the beach anyway. Whatever.

We had a very relaxing time. This is the way beaches should be: no clothes, no worries, no hassles. If we lived in the area, we’d love to check it out in the summertime. I’m sure it would be much more crowded but, I would hope, with a younger mix of people.

It’s a great friendly nude beach. There are people there from all walks of life.

When the weather is good you need to get there early to pick a spot to enjoy yourself.

Very nice beach, the walk can be brutal if you pack heavy. Wife and I had a get time first time going 8/3/15. People are very friendly just put being nude behind you. Can't wait until to go back next season.

I was nervous going to the beach, however my curiosity overshadowed my nervousness. We went, found a spot on the right side, and set up our 'camp' .At first I laid down on my chair, back up,and took it all in. when I saw a few guys totally nude walking, and even a Woman similar to me, I felt more comfortable.I put on my mirror glasses, relaxed and removed my top.It was like wow, this feels very weird, and I was about to retreat when I said like why? Everyone else is cool with it so I'm in. People walking by would glance but he,its a nude beach and there is no surprise or shock. On purpose my Husband walked away and, yes, there were 'lookers' and even a camp of a few Men purposely sat near by,when he left, but it was very normal to be curious. Not one problem, people are real cool, and the great Police there keep it very orderly. That was weeks ago,I go full nude at times, never leave my chair that way,but laying down,i have no problem, feels great to be free.Highly recommend it.

By ZenGolfGuy |

A few years ago I decided to challenge myself and go to Gunnison, the only nude beach around. It's a decent enough beach, with a killer view of NYC and the harbor. And it's amazing how quickly the nudity ceased to be an issue at all.

It's not brazilian models out there, it's normal folks. You'd be amazed at how freeing it is.

And by all means, the one thing you should definitely wear are sunglasses.

Chilly water but great beach vibe. A bit of a walk from lot. Pack a cooler. Don't bring glass. All and all a perfect beach day.

I was blown away by what a great time I had! So many diverse people, men and women, all having a beautiful day, naked at the beach. It is SO freeing not being conerned with how you look in your swim suit. No one cares, no one stares, and it seemed to me everyone was really enjoying the warm (well hot that day!) sunshine on their bare skin. It was so lovely and I will definitely be back. Just be prepared for a long trip from the entrance to Sandy Hook all the way to Parking Lot G where Gunnison is. The long trek on the matted path out to the actual beach is well worth it. Lots of sandy area, too, so you can be really close to the ocean or a good distance away. I loved it!

wonderful beach, people of all ages, but don't forget to visit the restrooms before going to the beach, it's a long way and the sand is hot, so you wouldn't appreciate coming back too often!

It is nice to be able to enjoy the sun's rays without having clothes on. This is a friendly, clean and safe beach with a view of the NYC skyline thrown in too.

Gunnison is a really nice beach. To get onto the property, it cost $15 per car and the beach is located at the far end of the strip. There is a large parking lot but it fills up quick. The beach itself is a bit of a walk especially if you are bringing in items. The view toward NYC is nice and the beach itself is peaceful. We went around 9:30 AM and by 11 AM it was really starting to get busy. There is a volleyball net and restrooms and showers are on the property.

Gunnerson Beach is a beach i go to often, i am a nudist , a citizen of nj, and its about 40 minutes from where i live... The beach is clothing optional, but when you are their feeling square with your bathing suits on you will eventually remove them, most of the crowd is either partially or fully nude. On my very first visit i had no problem going fully nude. Even my boyfriend eventually gave in. Nothing wrong with a little nudity.. Come early if you plan on getting in the lot especially on weekends during peak season, and bring sunscreen for those parts usually coverd. Have fun. I do every time.

Since we were going to be in NYC, we wanted to take some time to visit Gunnison Beach. I have been there many times before but it would be her first time visiting. We decided to spend two days at Gunni is the weather held out. One day before heading into the city and the last day as we headed out. The weather was beautiful both days. The first day, we were there later in the afternoon on a friday so the crowd had thinned a little already. The last day, we spent the whole day there from 10ish til 5 and it was quite busy the whole time.

First, the changes we noticed. There is no longer alcohol allowed on the beach. Though this mostly meant, no obvious alcohol. There were plenty of people sipping or drinking adult beverages out of tumblers, solo cups, etc. Just no obvious cans of beer or margaritas being passed around.

Second, the iconic beyond this point sign is no longer up. We looked for it because it is always such a popular photo to take on a Gunni visit, but we couldn't find it.

Nothing else seemed to have changed too much. There are food trucks now by the bathrooms and umbrella and chair rental there too. The old days of having the food cart at the beach by the life guard stand is sorely missed. The walk to the beach is still horrendously long. We did the double, triple check to make sure we had everything prior to leaving the car. Last thing we wanted was to forget something like the sunscreen after getting to the beach and having to trudge the distance back to the car.

So for those who havent been to Gunnison beach, it is the only sanctioned clothing optional beach in the northeast. There are life guards and police patrols, as well as the services we listed earlier. It is a beautiful beach that on a clear day gives you a clear view of the manhattan skyline. The beach itself is very wide, so the walk from the parking lot to the beach itself is quite a trek. It takes most people 20-30 min to get from the car to the beach. Especially when you are carrying or lugging all your beach gear. Of note, even though there is a short segment of carpeted walkway to get to the beach, the majority of the trek is on fairly deep soft sand with lots of shells. Only the burliest beach carts with huge wheels would be able to make it without difficulty. We saw many people stuggling with overloaded carts with even large plastic wheels during our time there. Also be prepared for wind, Gunni tends to be a fairly wind place. Many people bring wind screens and definitely bring only strong beach umbrellas or beach shelters that have strong anchors and stakes. We frequently heard people yell 'Umbrella!' as people's untended beach umbrella started coming free in the wind. Last thing anyone wants is to impale someone with your beach umbrella.

The beach fluctuates in length depending on the national park service. There is alway a clothed side (on the left) and a large clothing optional side (right). The areas are clearly designated with signs from the waters edge up to the lifeguard building further up on the beach. There are two life guard chairs currently up on the beach.

The crowd as Gunni is quite friendly. You will run into people from all walks of life and all ages. There are usually many groups that go there and will set up areas with wind screens that they will setup camp in for the day. Once you get to the beach, clothing is optional. It used to be when you reached the Beyond this Point sign, but now there is no clear line. They also have a nice beach Volleyball net setup with poles and is setup for 4 on 4 play.

After setting up our beach area, and lathering up with sunscreen, We spent our full day at Gunni walking the beach and meeting new people. The water was a bit chilly but it felt nice on a hot day. It was her first time to Gunni and she agreed that all beaches should be like this. It was funny because occasionally a woman wearing a skimpy bathing suit would walk the beach from the textile side and she would get more looks from guys than any of the hundreds of nude women milling around. The water depth is quite shallow until high tide, you can for most part of the day walk waist deep fairly far out from the beach. When the wind died down a bit, we even got enough people to play a little bit of beach Volleyball.

Besides pulling on some shorts to go grab some food at the food truck, it was really nice to spend a naked day in the sun. Gunni is a national treasure, we hope they never take it away.

Never been to a clothing optional beach before and this was a great first experience.Took a cab to the beach area and there was a little walk to the beach but not bad, most people went without clothes which it very comfortable to take ours off.Definatly recommended if you are looking for a nude beach experience.

Totally unsexual experience despite beautiful naked women. Just too far to walk in soft sand. Never again but a check off of the bucket list.

Wife and I had a interesting experience here. First visit, hope to get back to this beach again. It was a little on the chili side

I am a big fan of nude beaches - the feeling of freedom is indescribable. I especially like seeing the expression of childlike joy in others there: I know the feeling is shared. Most experienced folks will tell you that the worst part of going to a nude beach is having to put your clothes on at the end of the day.

Gunnison is quite nice. On my recent visit (not my first) there was a good mix of people, with lots of shapes, sizes, ages, skin tones, etc. As others have pointed out, there are older men wandering solo: they seem harmless but a little creepy.

It was pre-season (before Memorial Day), so park entrance was free, but there were no lifeguards and the snack bar was not open. The latter is by the parking, which everyone notes is a long walk from the waterline. Travel light... But pack your own lunch!

On the whole, a wonderful experience. Not the best nude beach I've been to... But I've never been to one that was less than 'good' - the experience is just too excellent for it ever to be bad!

I have watched this beach grow from a strip of beach 20 ft. wide to what it is today, BIG. It is a very long walk from the restrooms to the ocean. Be prepared. Bring anything you may need, especially shade and sunscreen. There are different parts of the beach, there is a family area, a party area, the area some don't venture, and a gay area. There is volleyball, although some tend to be very unfriendly if you are not a "good player", according to them. If the wind is blowing from the west don't go. Really I'm not kidding the flies will eat you alive!
