Have to see long horns!

By MsLiz |

We loved being up close and personnel with these wild animals.
They even had a baby in tow.
Very pretty location to sit and observe as well.

Lots of sheep down today. Several males too!! Enjoy the kids facilities too. Very clean.

Sweet little park - see bighorn sheep!

By TommyBear |

I was staying at the Quality Inn about 2 blocks away, so I walked up here each morning. Met friendly locals out doing the same - just enjoying the view - and learned a lot about the area from them. If you're just passing through on your way to the dam, this would be a good place to take a break before getting into the madness at Hoover Dam.

Must see !

By DGE |

Must see to believe! We stopped by the park late in the day about 7pm thinking maybe we missed the Big Horn sheep but they were still grazing, we watched for close to an hour then they followed the path into the hills. We were at Zion and Grand Canyon but saw very little wild life until Hemenway Park. Treat your family put the park in your GPS then walk towards the back of the park find the bench or take a blanket and sit in the middle of the most beautiful sight.

Wildlife in the city

By Ann C |

If you build a city, you would think wildlife would take the hint. But in Boulder City, the bighorn sheep know where the best grass is. Morning and evening shows daily. Don't get close, but you won't see this at most attractions.

No Big Horn sheep til it's warmer

By brendrewsmom |

I went to this park very excited to see the sheep. They should make it clear, there are none until the weather is warmer. Most of the time they come down in later April. Great baseball park and awesome views of Lake Mead.

Hemenway Park

By Kathy F |

This park is awesome! The kids and adults loved the big horn sheep, and the playground. We will visit again!

The Big Horns are reliable

By IB S |

Another splendid visit to Hemenway Park. Herds seemed large and the babies were happy to explore. Good to see how well the herds are thriving.

I have been told noon the best time to view but have not made it over there near that time & still haven’t been disappointed. If you stop, more than likely you will be rewarded.

Big Horn Sheep!!!

By UncleDevoShamus |

Hemenway Park is a gem! Great view of Lake Mead in the background, big horn mountain sheep in the foreground.

Great Detour

By Shaun G |

Went to visit the Hoover Dam and saw the sign warning about them on the highway. I asked a Hoover Dam employee on the observation deck where I could find some and he mentioned this spot. I have to say I was shocked that there were about 30 of them in the park snacking on the grounds. They must come there often as there are permanent signs affixed that gives you information on the animals much like a zoo. You definitely don't see this type of think back east.

Territorial

By Amei |

A geriatric population next to this park own houses and condos near the park have real hostility towards tourists. Do not come hetr.

Finally saw the sheep!

By SantaFeDiva |

At our hotel we were speaking to some locals who said the sheep were around because they live near the park and they are decimating their trees, so at noon, we ventured over. We looked around, and up the hill, and low and behold, there they were running down the hill to the park! What a sight. Now, there was a older tagged male who was wary of the people, but the young ones went right for the grass. You keep your distance so you can shoot your photos and they will be fine.
Spoke to a Mom with her children and she said, "watching them never gets old".
Well, it just made me smile and start a day happy!

By WeekendVisitor2014 |

We found this place through Trip Advisor & our tour guides at Flightlinez. It was so neat to see the sheep in this setting. You can see that the land the park is on, has been theirs for a long time & I'm so glad the park has allowed them to stay. It takes a couple of minutes. Not far off the road on the way to the Hoover Dam.

Awesome experience

By Sumana A |

We have been there 4 times over the years but never got the chance to see those beautiful big horn mountain sheep. They were beautiful

moun tain sheep up close

By hbonnemx |

more than 20 male, female, adult and young sheep grazing and lazing on the grass, able to be seen up close. Unfortunately, some people ignore the signs and try to get up real close which spooks them. Fortunately, the male sheep usually back off but they are protecting the heard so I expect that at some time, someone will be charged.

Those are real bighorn sheeps!

By hiro_shiratori |

We stopped by this Hemenway Park and were skeptical, but we saw real bighorn sheeps. There were not many people, acutally more bighorn sheeps than humans at this particular time. It was in the afternoon during summer. I believe we were here around 3PM. They were pretty close to us where we were just sitting on the grass. Pictures came out very nice. What a pleasant place to relax watching these wild animals. We even saw baby bighorn sheeps. These wild animals were pretty close to humans, but humans also pay respect not to interreact with them and their natural habitats seem to be well preserved, which is very important! Great place!

See long horn sheep resting in the shade overlooking lake mead

By Coachwoodsjb |

We were told to stop by the park by our guide from the kayak tour we were on (kayaklakemeade@instagram) to see the long horned sheep and take pictures. Our tour was a Emerald cove kayak tour which I also recombed.

Love Big Horn Sheep

By Christina D |

I live by this park. I Love this place for our family and grandkids I always feel so fortunate to live by the majestic Big Horn sheep that frequent this park

Check out the Big Horn Sheep!

By William G |

This is an amazing stop for a visit to the area. Big Horn sheep come down from the mountains to graze, and you can get pretty close to them. Amazing animals.

Relaxing park with a unique view

By Tina S |

Located just a few blocks from the main highway you can enjoy this park that includes a playground for the kiddos, shaded picnic tables, and a view of mountain sheep relaxing in the grass. Definitely will return to take more photos of the sheep.

Bighorn Sheep Central!

By joyful1LasVegas |

Nice park overlooking Lake Mead. My husband and I drove out to the park the other morning around 10:30; parked just off the street and there were nearly 40 Bighorn sheep just nibbling on the grass or laying on the grass not more than 15 feet away! We just sat there in the car and watched them and enjoyed their antics!

Jon brought us here after out kayaking trip!

By lynnarseneau |

This so cool!!! It was a side trip and so amazing to see them!
Weather was great and the park was very pleasant.

A Herd of Big Horn Sheep

By Rich L |

This little park may not be the easiest to find but FIND IT - there is a little herd of Horned Sheep that evidently live there and are pretty tame (not for petting)... however, you will be able to get a close up view of these beautiful animals. GO THERE. Highly Recommend.

Close to nature

By RoxAnna F |

We love stopping by this park several times a year and watching the big horn sheep. Take a little picnic, watch the baby and momma sheep.

There have been a few times we have not seen any sheep, early February there wasn't a sheep in sight, but Mid December there were males and females, roaming around, and munching on grass. Several rams were up in the small hills above the park, and we got to watch them pick their way down the hills back into the park.

In early November there were several females and younger sheep.

We played with our little people on the large playground also in this park. Along with a tennis area, there is several activities to keep different ages busy. The gazebo is a great place to have a little lunch. A very nice place to take a walk with great views.

Like with any wild animal caution is in order. I have seen several people get too close and act stupid.

There are bathroom facilities on sight.

Parking can be challenging, the lot is very small and not for large vehicles. There is on street parking for large vehicles.

Great opportunity

By T-Scout_and_Mom |

I took my family to this park with high hopes of seeing big horn sheep. We were not let down. There were at least a couple of dozen sheep in the park. We also saw a family of quail and a couple of rabbits. The park overlooks Lake Mead and mountains. It was simply beautiful. Please do respect the area as it is located in a neighborhood.

This is so different

By FamilyTripPlanner66 |

You have never experienced a park like this. The rams are running free only a few feet. This is so cool.

A Hidden Gem

By SPARKLELasVegas |

The big horn sheep, the lush green grass with the beautiful blue of Lake Mead in the background as well as some shady areas and a great playground that has been painted with paint that resists heat- what more could you ask for? We absolutely love coming here and just watching the people and sheep. It's relaxing and soul quenching.

Nice Park …

By CharlieinTexas |

Lots of green space. Pretty view, at a distance, of Lake Mead. Easy terrain, well-maintained gravel path runs about 1/3 of a mile. Big horn sherp grazing on the grass.

Beautiful place to view & visit.

By Theresa |

The bighorn sheep were very majestic. They didn’t seem to mind humans there but I would recommend keeping young children at a safe distance as they are wild animals. The first tune we went at 10am on a day that was not too hot there were no sheep; but the next time we went at 1pm in the afternoon they were there.

Free park to see the Bighorn sheep!

By Nyormirror |

We stopped here during a NPS Hoover Dam highlight tour. Very well kept kept green area where bighorn sheep roam freely and rest in the shade. NO DOGS and please keep your distance from these WILD animals. Great photo opportunities. You also in a city of well known celebrities that have homes there.

COME SEE THE BIG HORN SHEEP GRAZING

By AFamilyGuy_1 |

A UNIQUE little park just outside of Boulder City, Nevada that many times has a heard of BIG HORN SHEEP grazing on the grounds. A known & popular park for this !

A Must

By travellingsinclairs |

Add grass to water and you have a feeding spot for Mountain Bighorn Sheep which come from the surrounding mountains to meet the shutter bug camera enthusiasts and wide eyed children getting close enough to touch. A thrill for young and old. The park is just to the east of Boulder City down the hill toward Hover Dam, first left turn and park is on your right 100 or so yards ahead. Best times morning and dusk.

Wanna see the Nevada State Animal??

By Ragski49 |

Grab a picnic lunch r a coffee in the afternoon, drive to this little neighborhood park in picturesque Boulder City and quietly wait. On most days, you will be amazed to see a rather large herd of Nevada Bighorn sheep strolling through this park!! Be quiet and take pictures---please DO NOT approach these protected animals or make loud noises...just enjoy the rare chance to see a beautiful bighorn in it's natural habitat.

Hemenway Ram Park Review

By aghyba |

After our tour of Hoover Damn we stopped here to check out the rams. Pretty place they live in, next to tennis courts. Got close but not too close.

Our local big horn sheep, can just come and sit on a park bench and watch them, wild animals, usual down in hot days

By Peggy |

Wonderful place to relax or have a picnic lunch. Picnic tables, benches to sit and enjoy the sheep. Beautiful views of Lake Mead and surrounding mountains.

Many people select this park for weddings and sometimes have big horn sheep guests.

Whoa!

By Lori E |

The Big Horn Sheep favor this park for its clover and accessibility to their local range. You can seriously get within 20 feet of these magnificent animals. Take your camera.

Worth the stop

By yolande b |

Stopped on the way to Hoover. Clean park, plenty of parking. Small trail. Great photo opportunities with view of water. Lucky to see one big horn sheep

See Big Horn Sheep up close!

By Eileen K |

What fun! We stopped by the park on our way to Hoover Dam and saw three or four sheep grazing on the grass. I’m glad we stopped by afterwards as well, because at least two dozen Big Horn Sheep were enjoying the park. The beauty of Lake Mead in the background added to the experience.

So excited that the big-horn sheep were here!

By Jim M |

what an awesome area to get up close and personal with a herd of big horn sheep...Fantastic photo opportunities and seeing the behavior of the sheep was very educational as well...

Aliens?

By Frank W |

I was recently on a visit to Las Vegas. We were on a group tour to Hoover Dam. On our way back our bus driver took us by Hemenway Park to possibly view the bighorn sheep. We did not see them; however our bus driver related a tall tail to us. It seems that monthly during certain months, the bighorn sheep descend from their mountains to visit Hemenway Park for a few days and then return to their mountain fastness. The story is that eons ago they were brought to Earth by aliens to determine if the Earth was suitable to sustain life. Now they return to Earth to await their transport home. We did not see any but their were numerous people in the park hoping to see the sheep.

Beautiful

By Kelly D |

A wonderful stop along the way where you will see animals roaming around and beautiful landscape of the area.

Stunning view

By Sarah Jane Abad |

The park overlooked Lake Mead and with the big horn sheep ... it was magical! Had to remember the sheep are wild and keep your distance for your safety.

Great place to stop and picnic.

By CarrelDawn |

t he big-horn sheep are stupendous and there are plenty of tables and shaded areas. Lots of information posted.

Wild Life

By chlene36 |

Hemenway Park is a pleasant stop with clean facilities. Wild mountain goats hanging out on the lawn.

Big horn sheep

By KathyW_11 |

It's not 100% that they will be here, but if they are you are in for a treat. Wild animals co-existing in a pretty park with kids on swings and picnicking families. Who knew? Amazing photo ops.

Great Park to see some mountain goats

By livelife h |

While on tour we stop by the park to see the mountain goats we were able to admire the goats from a safe distance and see the beautiful view in the background. Definitely a must-do if you're in Boulder City

A fun surprise

By embeyfar |

We didn't really thing there would be bighorn sheep just chilling at this park, but they were there! They look a little scary, but they seemed pretty friendly, and some of the family even got kinda close.

Fun

By Barb K |

Perfect place to see the mountain goats.
Park is small for ages past 4 years
Could be better.
But we love seeing the mountain goats.
Fantastic views.

Big Horn Sheep

By Sue C. |

My husband and I also make a stop in Boulder City whenever we visit LV but this was our 1st time stopping at this park. We were not sure what to expect but there were Big Horn Sheep everywhere. They were not bothered by everyone taking their pictures.
There were several coming down from the mountains, many relaxing in the shade and some grazing closer to the bottom of the park.
Just do yourself a favor and check out this park. You will be amazed and it is free.

Great relaxing experience

By babs12858 |

After visiting Hoover dam, we took a little drive over to this park to see the wild longhorn sheep. It was so quiet and serene, we just sat there for A long time and enjoyed watching them. A local who was there having a picnic with their family, told us that in the evenings they all go back up the path single file every night and that they don’t usually come down until early afternoons to graze in this park. This would be a great place to have a picnic and also a nice place for kids because there are swings and things for children to do.

Why chase them, the longhorn sheep are already there!

By Hoach |

I was told that instead of having to track the longhorn sheep all I had to do was visit this park. Sure enough there they were a whole herd of them and big ones. Oblivious to the park visitors and very accommodating to photographers. Just the day before I was in the mountains tracking some for photos, all I had to do here was show up!

Wild big horn sheep!

By Laura L |

This was one of my highlights of my trip to Las Vegas. It was only about a half an hour drive. We went about 1pm and the whole herd of big horn sheep had come out of the mountains to graze. They are not very afraid and they come pretty close. Awesome experience. Beautiful animals!

Dropped off here at the end of a full day kayak trip down Black Canyon

By shifra w |

We were dropped off at this park at the end of a very eventful day with Desert Adventures, kayaking twelve miles down Black Canyon from the Hoover Dam to Willow Beach.
The trailer carrying the kayaks burst a tire and the fellow driving our van had to go back to help, so we were deposited in this park for over an hour in mid August. It was wonderful until the mosquitoes started coming out, as evening approached. So, if you are here on a summer evening, do bring mosquito spray.
There is a nice playground for children, a covered gazebo with picnic tables and one bench out in the field.
If you are taking pictures, the bench is the best place to be sitting when you aim your camera.
I found not only the flock of bighorn sheep to be amazing, but also the views of Lake Mead. The shots I got looked like a gorgeous picture postcard, with the grazing sheep in the foreground and the gorgeous aquamarine Lake Mead in the background.

Lovely views and the big horned sheep were cute!

By Alex G |

Well I'll be honest, it would be a nice place to live! Super clean, lovely views and the big horned sheep wandering about made the place that little bit special! I wouldnt go out of the way to visit, but great as a stop on the way from Vegas to Hoover Dam!

See the mountain goats up close!!!

By tobmar |

Stumbled onto this! Free! Regular park that you can see the mountain goats up close, they will let you get within about 10 feet of them before they will move away! Beautiful site! Green sweet grass, and shade trees bring the mountain goats out of the mountains during the really hot weather. If you have animal lovers, this is definitely a place to stop! Right along the path to Hoover Dam or Grand Canyon!

Vegas to Hoover Dam - must stop!

By ogor |

One of the greatest views! The Rams were an added treat, as the view from this park is incredible. Hard to believe, very view people take the time to visit. There were a few locals at the park and a handful of others. We kept our distance, but got some great photo ops.

Magical!

By Paul B |

Sometimes, you have one of those magical experiences.

This morning, just after dawn, I took a short hike from our hotel in Boulder City, NV, with a friend - we were photo hunting Bighorn Sheep! They live in the hills above Lake Mead, but, early in the morning, they often come down from the hills to graze on the lush grass of a neighbourhood park.

We climbed a small ridge above the park, and could see a small herd of early arrivals in a wash below us, while more were cresting the next ridge. We waited for them to come down - over 40 in all! - including a small herd of older rams, with some very impressive racks on display.

The herd walked past us, a matter of a few feet, to graze on the grass. Most hung around the buffet, but the male herd continued on and into the neighbourhood streets (walking against the traffic as good pedestrians do).

We stayed with the main herd, of about 30-35 animals of all ages, including some youngsters of 6-18 months, some of whom enjoyed a little game of chase - it was fun to see these kids playing on the playground....!

As we started to return to the hotel, we stopped to talk to a couple in a car, and while knelt on the sidewalk taking shots of the youngsters grazing, a mature ram walked across the sidewalk in to the street, barely 2 feet from me! Quite extraordinary.

While they are wild animals, they are habituated to humans, as long as you are quiet and move slowly, and if you are respectful of them and their space. While they kept an eye on us, I don't believe they were particularly disturbed by our presence. It was certainly a very moving experience - there really is nothing quite like being up close and personal with nature in the raw, even in this semi-urban setting.

Great stop after Dam tour

By Tym2Pla |

This park has been on my to-do list since we started planning our trip. My husband and two of our adult grown children (Not sure why the FAMILY option for trip type was limited to young children or teens??) thought I had lost my mind and questioned how I could be sure the sheep would be there. I assured them "BECAUSE TRIP ADVISOR SAID SO". We were not disappointed. The park is lovely and happy we go there before a large tour bus stopped. They were a bit loud for my liking and we felt sorry for the sheep. We spent about an hour watching these beautiful creatures grazing and playing in the park. They did not appear to even notice the children playing on the playscape. Thanks for all the earlier T.A. reviews that help me plan our vacations!!

Park

By Angela K |

Great experience. I visited this park with a tour guide by the name of Bob. This park was amazing and the animals stayed a distance.

Very cool experience

By Werbrichfamily |

Heard from a local that we needed to go see the Big Horn Sheep in this city park. They really get close to you! Ooook. So we went to Hemenway Park. What a cool place. YES the big horn sheep are right there hanging out. Most were just hanging in the shade of the 115 degree heat. Some were eating grass and one other was trying to find a mate. There were probably 75 of them from babies to old timers with great big horns. We spend about 1/2 hour just watching them and being close. When we left, a tour bus pulled in. The bighorns don't seemed to be spooked by humans. Cool experience

Green grass, shade and you may see the goats.,

By Char X |

If you are visiting the Hoover Dam, this spot is a great add on. It is only 15 mins away from the dam. And makes a great pit stop. To sit in grass or have a picnic. And these mountain goats are often there dining on the grass.

Simple surprise!!!

By Shandra G |

While cooling off in the cafe of Hoover Dam (it was 117 while we were there), I searched for other things to see in Boulder City and stumbled across this listing. Super glad we went! My daughter had been intrigued by the mountain goat signs ( or now we know Little Bighorn sheep) and kept trying to find some while we were driving. So I told her we had a surprise. It is only minutes from Hoover dam. It is just a small neighborhood park where the sheep come down off the hills to graze. They aren't scared of people at all and seemed to actually like it when tour buses dropped off folks to see them. If you want to get up close and see them playing, fighting, and nuzzling their young, don't miss this simple suprise. BTW, my daughter (12) loved it... And didn't want to leave....

Beautiful

By Cynthia M |

Beautiful park. Great views of Lake Mead. The resident big horn sheep are awesome. The peaceful atmosphere was great. We spent a while just chilling watching the sheep and the lake. Very special place.

Close to Nature and close to City...great for kids of all ages

By Dsharp215 |

Local park that more often than not....Bighorn Mountain Sheep for all to see. Great to see nature at it's best so close to home.

Bring your camera, great for the kiddos....

Big Horn Sheep - Up close and personal

By Deb62862 |

We stopped at this park near Hoover Dam and Lake Mead after reading on the forum that Big Horn Sheep like to graze there and we weren't disappointed. We arrived late in the afternoon and there were probably 12 - 15 sheep having dinner! They seem completely unfazed by people stopping to look and take pictures. Its really right on the way to the dam and worth the stop.

Mountain Sheep!!!

By dcetraveling |

It is not everyday that you get to view wild mountain sheep grazing on green grass but this is the place to do it.

At first I thought this was just a regular city park. Why is the tour bus stopping at this place. Wrong.

This small community park provided a first hand experience of watching Mountain Sheep. An animal that I had never seen in the wild. The backdrop is overlooking Lake Mead and the mountains as well.

It was a nice surprise!

Bighorn Sheep

By DiscerningOnes |

This is the place to go to see bighorn sheep. They like to hang out in the grassy area near the kiddie slides, although sometimes a few are munching the grass right on the side of Highway 93. If you've never seen the herd, the few minutes you'd go out of your way is worth the chance of seeing them. You can't touch, feed, or interact with them, but it's very exciting to see these wild sheep so close.

Bighorn Sheep walked right by me...... OMG!

By Karen L |

The Desert Big Horn sheep were eating the grass on the playing field in the park. They were all males. They decided to walk up the hill and I sat very still. They walked right by the cars to the upper area. I am telling you, there were at least 30 sheep of all ages. I never saw one before. It is also free, since they are wild and can go where ever they like.

Fun place to see Bighorn Sheep

By Huntani1 |

I have been to Hemenway park a lot of times, and each time I saw plenty of bighorn sheep grazing and resting. The girls really like to visit a few times a year and watch the sheep as we relax in the shade with a picnic lunch. Great for young and old.

We were hoping to spot some big horn sheep but got skunked

By Dan S |

We were hoping to spot some big horn sheep but got skunked this time. This IS a good place to get some scenic pictures of Lake Mead though

Great views and Big Horn Sheep

By DebMaFin |

Great place for picnic with magnificent views of lake Mead and if you are lucky you will see Big Horn Sheep. One word of caution do not try to pet or feed they are wild animals. Nice playground for children too.

Wonderful surprise.

By MandS91 |

Traveling from Williams, AZ. Heading to Las Vegas, passed this wonderful park with these beautiful animals roaming free. So nice to stop and watch.

Big Horn Sheep

By Jeannet1957 |

OK, I live about a block away. Nice Park, Great Easter Sunrise Service there - free donuts. The sheep arrive in May, nearest I can tell is when it hits 100 degrees, and they leave in January. The items I've heard about the herds is there are 3, and the sheep number around 100. They show up around noon in May and gradually show up earlier and earlier towards the end of the year, as early as 6 am. Climbing board, swings, picnic tables and grills, permanent bathrooms which flush, two tennis courts with lights and 3 regulation looking base ball parks, walking areas with up to 30 miles if trails. Gas/convenience store up the block

Hidden Gem

By paulinespens |

Stopped off from a Grand Canyon tour and got to see some wild sheep.

The view is great and definitely a great photo opportunity.

Wildlife in Southern Nevada

By LVgabeg |

Wanted to get out of Vegas so took the family down to Boulder City to take some photos of the Big Horns and explore the town. So got there around 1pm and there was no sheep. So drove around looking at the houses in the nearby area. There is a really cool pirate house sitting on the hill. On our way back to the park we noticed Animal Control herding the sheep into the park around 2pm.

The sheep grazed in the shade of the trees that line this park. They don't allow you to get to close, but if you are sitting on a bench they have no problems walking by you. We spent quite a bit of time watching them and then walked around the park looking for other signs of wild life.

We saw lots of bunnies, a few great basin whiptails (lizards) and a hunting pair of red tail hawks. I was told in the past other people have encountered snakes, turkey vultures and even a bobcat (saw the guys photos.. pretty cool)

Anyway great place to sit and watch the herd over looking lake Mead. It is the middle of June so temperature is over 100 degrees so bring water. There was two baby sheep in the herd and a few expecting mothers. (guessing.. it may have been gas??) There are benches around the park in the shade as well as sitting under the trees. There is a tennis court and a playground in the park as well.

Great place to view lake mead & big horn sheep

By CherRuss M |

Lovely park to have a picnic, or family gathering. Great views of Lake Mead and the local Big Horn sheep herd!

Just outside of Vegas.

By Kappaphi153 |

This place is about 27 miles from Las Vegas. After visiting other parks across Utah, this was a nice place to enjoy, outside of the hustle and bustle of the city. The animals are wild and visit the park to eat grass. You can get some great pics of them grazing with Lake Mead in the background.

Relaxing to watch the rams

By sarahrey09 |

Came here with a friend, stayed about an hour and just relaxed in the grass. It was fun. We saw a bunch of rams. If you get too close they will walk away, but I managed to get like within 10 feet of them and take some pictures to show friends on facebook.

Highlight of the trip

By 10ringtraveler |

My wife has always wanted to spot one of these sheep, preferably in a more wild setting but she still loves to see them whenever she can, each time we drive through a desert environment she is always hopeful to spot one of these animals.
We visited the Lake Mead Visitor center and she asked one of the rangers if there was any place where we might spot one. We thought we would be driving to some remote part of the park, scanning distant hillsides or cliffs. He told us about this park and said they were not always there but we had a good chance of seeing them. As we drove towards the park, we were looking at the hillsides behind it when suddenly I hear. Oh my god STOP! I thought a child had run into the street in front of our car.....nope she had spotted the heard. Not one, or a few, not a dozen but we counted around 40 sheep. We spent the next hour and a half at least just watching and taking over 300 pictures! It was incredible!
Now on top of that, it is a very nice family park with activity courts and shaded areas for gathering. We spoke to a couple of neighbors and they were very nice. The park is clean and well maintained. We were only in Vegas for three days and this was probably the highlight! So recommended!

Wildlife!!!!!

By Deweyz |

This was fantastic. We saw the big horn sheep, with a nice scenic area around. We stopped for lunch and (with actual camera and zoom lens) got some fantastic photos.

One warning: Watch out as some people were getting too close and the sheep were getting a bit ruffled. But you can’t blame a place for the idiots that happen to visit.

Hard to find!

By Kristina B |

We only came to the park to see the sheep. We waited for a while and then found them. Look for shaded areas. There were only a few to be found! Definitely have to be patient.

Yes, the sheep were there

By MauricioBabilonia |

We were on our way back to Las Vegas from a visit to the Hoover Dam and found this place on TA. The bighorn sheep were there grazing and interacting during a very hot July day. We observed for a while and left. It has restrooms and drinking water.

Gorgeous Park in Boulder City

By Maureengirl |

Great View of Lake Mead, nice play area and gazebos for picnics. Big Horn Sheep graze on the grassy areas. Amazing encounter with magnificent wildlife. Located not too far off the Highway on your way to the Lake. Well worth your time!!!

A New Adventure

By Nunngirl |

Who would've thought that the Nevada's state animal would be the bighorn sheep?? I was amazed that this animal even existed. But when the bus driver stopped and showed us the critter up close and personal, I was simply amazed! Now I can say that I've seen one UP CLOSE!!

Big Horn Sheep

By MaryAnne O |

After a visit to the Hoover Dam and the O’Callaghan- Tillman Bridge we visited Hemenway Park. Our guide said he sometimes sees sheep there who come down from the mountain to eat the grass then sit in the shade of the trees. What a treat it was to see these animals up close - but not too close!!! There were several big horn sheep there. It was an added treasure to my trip. Look for them if you are in the area.

Amazing

By Sarah MB |

We went on New Year's Day. Didnt expect to see any sheep. Whoa! Surprised and amazed at the beauty of these animals. They were right in front of us. It was a real experience for my family. Can't wait to go back for a longer stay.

Bighorn sheep viewing

Take visitors all the time. Have always spotted big horn sheep. Often on the grass but sometimes the sprinklers move them around a bit.

Wanted to see long horn sheep for years traveling to Vegas and surrounding areas. Finally found them here!! Check off bucket list for sure!

Just a stop for the kids to run around. Had ample open space. Originally, plan was to go to the Train Museum nearby but it was closed during the work days unfortunately. Nice view of the lake. and a play ground for the kids to burn off some excess energy and a picnic area for the parents. Really nothing more to write about.

great little park

By BCRON |

Great park to view the lake and surrounding mountains. Sometimes the Big Horn sheep are their. Only please do not go into the neighborhoods looking for them as you will piss off the people who live there.

Don't Miss the Park Gem!

By ohsuzyq10 |

Our visits to six national parks had yielded almost no wildlife sightings but little Hemenway Park provided what the big parks did not provide. Returning from Hoover Dam, my daughter-in-law, three grandchildren, and I stopped here for a picnic lunch and found fifteen big horn sheep grazing on the hillside next to the parking lot!! Apparently this is a regular thing for this park as they had no fear of humans and grazed closer and closer to us yielding some nice pics. The park includes a nice playground, a basketball court, and a couple covered pavilions. After watching the sheep, we moved to a pavilion for our lunch and what next? Another group of sheep came bounding down from the hillside to graze with the first group! We thoroughly enjoyed our short visit and highly recommend Hemenway.

Take a moment to relax!

By Mel_Cat75 |

Perfect location to stop off on the way back to Vegas. We stopped and sat around, watching the bighorn sheep graze around the park. Would be a great spot for a lovely picnic lunch as there is shade and tables available.

Don’t miss it!

By Linda K |

Easy to get to, no charge, animals up soooo close. Don’t miss it!
Ignore it if it says closed. That must be for the community baseball field next door.

Skip this park - the reviews do not match my experience at the park.

By hooverdam4 |

Overrated reviews for hemenway park. The wildlife is not always there and we could not bring our dog. Plus the older people that have houses and condos near the park hate tourists and are not very welcoming. Skip the park and go to Lake Mead instead.

Up close with Bighorn Sheep

By Love2Travel_NE |

We always talked about doing the 30minute drive from our home to Hemenway Park. Finally did it . There were at least 35 Bighorn Sheep and stunning vies of Lake Mead. Work a side-trip if you are in the area.

A chance to see Big Horn Sheep

By Patty1123 |

Driving the old Highway 93 through Boulder City there is a small park on the lakeside of the highway. Many times the Big Horn Sheep come down to Hemenway Park and graze on the green grass. They are magnificent creatures and worth the time to stop.

Water is low.

By western u |

Thankfully they let you park near the end of the boat launch so you don't have a huge hike to your car after launch.

They have (formerly) floating restrooms nearby for easy usage.

Amazing experience

By Discover02086268949 |

We had bought a tour from Las Vegas to the Hoover Dam. Our guide told us about how the Long Horn sheep visit this park nearly every day, so we took a little detour to see if they were there. We counted 22! We were able to take photographs of the sheep and also had a awesome view of Lake Mead.

little gem

By Lisa H |

Beautifully maintained park. watching the big horn sheep graze on delicious green grass while eating our lunch was so amazing.

See up close

By Ralph D |

Want to see big horn mountain sheep up close, this is the place. Bring your camera, you won't see one or two, you'll see dozens of these beautiful animals. Best viewing is early morning and early evening

Great little park

By noworries2000 |

What a great little park -- one of the most modern play areas I've been to for kids. I wish I was a kid again... The herd of bighorn sheep that wander the grounds only adds to the tranquility of this place right in the heart of a local Boulder City neighborhood. The sheep are wild, but you can safely get plenty of good pictures from 100 feet away. Great views of Lake Mead off in the distance. Enjoy!

The sheep were there!

By Karynvic2 |

Driving to Las Vegas, decided to stop to see if the sheep were in fact there. We just stopped to take pictures and we were on our way.

Nice park- Bighorn like it too

By yorosey |

The park is OK but it is a great stop as there is almost always Bighorn Sheep hanging out there to see. They are not skittish so getting a pic or pics of them is very doable.

Big horned sheep at park

By Jennifer B |

The view was breathtaking and seeing the big horned sheep up close made it even better. They were freely roaming while kids were playing on the playground definitely a must see if you are in town.

Timing is everything

By ggintruckee |

We've stayed at the hotel across the street for many years and it's been hit and miss to see the big horn sheep, but the park is so close to the freeway it's worth a quick check to see if they are there. Unfortunately they have become so comfortable with humans that it takes away from the whole experience...but still cool to see them up close.

Great place to catch Bighorn Sheep

By StumblesandFumbles |

Nice park but the best feature of all is seeing the group of Bighorns that frequent the park. Great photo opportunity

Always a fun time.

By BCRON |

Stopped by the other day with my grandson. He loves playing on the gym equipment.
It offers a fantastic view of the lake. I fact a lot of people have their weddings here.
The sheep have been here most of the year.
All we ask is that you limit your watching at the park and not drive around the neighborhoods at rose there are lots of kids. And people tend to be busy looking up at the mountains and not look for the kids playing in the streets.

Yes, You Will See Bighorn Sheep

By Holly W |

This was a must see on our list. You see mostly females and small males up close and personal. If you get there as the sun begins to set, you can watch them climb up into the mountains.

It's fun to see the neighbors put pots of water out for them to drink. While there is no hunting, hunters enjoy seeing these wonderful animals.

If you're in the area, stop there frequently.

Great Park

By Kathleen C |

Loved watching the sheep. I took lots of pictures and enjoyed watching my grandkids play. Easy to get to.

Worth a short visit

By bitbytravelbug |

This is a small, neighborhood park. Plenty of parking. There were about 30 bighorns, mostly grazing or sitting in the shade chewing their cud. Quite a few males with amazing horns. 20 minutes is about enough time unless you 're here for the playground.

Great park with a lake view.

By Michel P |

This park has great lake views, shade facilities and a playground. During the summer, the sheep come down for the day and mingle freely with the people. Very unique place.

Pretty park with sheep and a killer view!

By Terry E |

I had read about this park because it was near a hotel that we were considering staying at. When I mentioned how it had Big Horned Sheep just roaming freely my husband thought this was something he had to see. After we left Hoover Dam we stopped. It's looks like any local community park with a shelter and playground area, only difference is instead of squirrels, you have sheep. There are signs telling people not to approach or bother the sheep and I suggest you following that rule. They are wild animals. Also remember with animals there is lots of animals waste. Walking was tricky. Once we saw the sheep we decided to sit at one of the benches and just take in the view. It was beautiful.

Bighorns!

By Terry W |

After driving around searching for Bighorns for quite some time, we finally spoke to someone who said that 99% of the time they are at the park so we visited and spent a long time sitting very quietly as they grazed all around us. It was an experience to remember.

We stopped by to see desert bighorns!

By Ron R |

And they were there! It was a cold a windy day so we focused on a few photos and left. The great thing is that this park is only a mile or two from downtown Boulder City.

Must see

By Lynnette M |

Went to the park after spending time at Lake Mead. We were there at approx. 1:30 PM. Saw 18 big horn sheep grazing. It was awesome.

Fun stop

By robin818 |

We stopped by this park in hopes of seeing the big goats and we were not disappointed. There was a large group hanging out and grazing. There was even one little baby. Good little side trip.

Views, well kept fields and bighorns

By Dave C |

Played on the fields for a softball tourney and was surprised that, with desert ALL AROUND, the fields were lush and green.
The bighorn sheep are brought in to, I guess, trim the grass. That's what they were doing this last weekend.
Also, the views of the depleted Lake Mead were spectacular.

Peaceful visit

By Mystiqgirl_66 |

I went to the park because I had heard there was bighorn sheep that roamed free in the park while grazing on the grass. I wasn't disappointed when I saw them freely roaming the park. The group were very close to the 95 freeway but if you park in the parking lot and walk just a short distance you can view the sheep very closely. I also took some photos of the bighorn sheep. There were many and they weren't at all scared of us...the humans. The park itself is on a smaller scale but was peaceful. Only 'noise' was from all the cars driving by on the freeway near here. And it's a very clean park too.

AMAZING

By wreztlingmom |

What an amzing sight!
So we are soooooo out of staters from Oregon. This is just a neighborhood park with a bunch of big horn sheep roaming free! Ridiculous! What an experiance! It totally made our day and trip! The residences of Boulder City are very lucky to have such beautiful creatures to see. To be able to walk up so close to them was so cool.
Im sorry, but it was freaking awesome!!!!
If you are in Boulder City this is a MUST DO! And it doesn't cost a thing. Don't pass this up!

In touch with nature and relaxing views

By scarletteheart |

Nestled in beautiful Boulder City, a park and playground with views of Lake Mead. Up close to Big Horn Sheep viewings. Also the occasional hummingbirds, rabbits, and other small wildlife. A great place to just regroup and reset your mindset.

So cool to see the bighorn sheep!

By jollsgwen |

There were about 8 bighorn sheep when we went just munching away on grass, not bothered in the least by people! so cool to just stand and watch these beautiful animals! we went about 2:00 in the afternoon on a beautiful fall day.

Bighorn Sheep are Back!!!

By DanielHarn |

For those who might have saw reviews that there has been no Bighorn Sheep at Hemenway Park for a while, I'm happy to report that as of yesterday, June 29th 2019, they were back in force, about 45 of them. We had a very wet winter/spring which led to a larger amount of grass and brush for the Bighorn Sheep to eat up the mountains so they had no reason to come down but now that the summer is here and the brush up in the hills is drying out, they are back in Hemenway Park! Stop by and enjoy but please don't get too close, there was 1 guy there with an iPad yesterday that scared several off because he tried to pet one while filming. Safe distance please, for your and the Sheep's safety!!! Oh and NO DOGS!!!!!

Worth a stop

By Rose Harrington |

Plan on a full day In Boulder City AFTER your visit to Hoover Dam or just by itself!
there is so much to do here for singles, couples and families alike! One place to stop with kids is Hemenway Park. When it was suggested to us, we thought we had to climb up the nearby hill to see Big Horn Sheep. Not so, there they are hanging in the park like a family on a picnic. Use caution as they are wild of course, but it sure is nice to see animals roaming free and NOT through a fenced in cage!

Sheep everywhere!

By Karen B |

We came here based on a recommendation from our campground host. We arrived in the early evening and there were sheep everywhere! Couldn't believe we could just have a picnic with big horn sheep around. Really cool!

Big Horned Sheep

By Kaitlyn G |

Stopped by the park after our 10 mile bike trip to the Hoover Dam ans was not disappointed. Walk slowly and sit down on the grass, they will walk right by you.

Big Horn Sheep

By Wanda204 |

Great place to see big horn sheep because they graze here, often in mid morning. It's hard to resist, but be safe, avoid going too close to them.

Big horn sheep!!

By CookseyMom |

On a lark, we drove by the park since other reviewers had mentioned big horn sheep. Sure enough, they were there, lounging like they were as tame as could be. We drove through and hiked several national parks on this trip, and this was the only one where we saw any wildlife other than a few deer at the Grand Canyon.

No wild sheep

By Scott W |

While waiting for our hotel room to be ready we walked to the Hemenway Park to view the wild sheep - all the reviews we read said they were there all the time. Well there were no sheep to be seen that day or the following when we went back.

Hemenway Park - Lots of Sheep!

By Christopher D |

We stopped by Hemenway Park on our way to lunch in Boulder City. We weren't able to see too many sheep at Zion National Park but this park is swarming with Big Horned Sheep. It's a small municipal park and you can get pretty close to the sheep. It is not recommended that you get "too" close as they are wild animals, but there is plenty of opportunity to take pictures. Watch out for sheep poo, it's everywhere. Also, no dogs allowed (because of the sheep).

Big Horns!

By Lori A |

DO NOT turn into first Hemenway Park ... where the "kids" are playing BALL! heHEhe! We are from WI so we went where the GPS took us! It had a Hemenway Park Sign ... so we got out and looked & looked AND NOooo Big Horns! We asked a few "locals" and 1 guy said they hadn't come down in a LONG TIME! Luckily the "gal" on our kayaking adventure said she had seen them the DAY prior so I kept asking ... finally one local said ... try down there and pointed to the "next" driveway ... which was also Hemenway Park sign. Well there they were! TONS of Big Horns! They were EVERYWHERE! Took a TON of photos! Enjoying nature out in nature is the BEST! We loved it!

Sheep & a Lake View

By Thomas Sims |

Cute, little park with a nice view of Lake Mead. We wanted to see the bighorn sheep and took a chance they would be there in the late afternoon. We were not disappointed as there were a bunch of them. Their horizontal pupils are kinda freaky though.

Big Horn Sheep. Beautiful park

By missbird2000 |

Hemenway Park, is a wonderful, small park in Boulder City, NV
It has a large herd of Big Horn Sheep that hang out in the park and graze on the grass. There are picnic tables where families come to eat and play and watch the sheep. There are play items for the kids to climb on to keep them entertained.
Please remember: the sheep are wild animals. Do not attempt to approach. Never run at the sheep or cause them any harm. If you walk slowly, you can take pictures of them as they eat or rest in the grass. They go into the hills, next to the park, for the winter months and have their young in early spring. When the young are old enough they return back to the park area.
So come, enjoy the park, the sheep, relax and enjoy the beautiful view of Lake Mead.

Day Trip to Boulder City

By Texas |

Spent day in Boulder with family. Beautiful Park with a view of the lake. There were over 20 big horn peacefully grazing and resting. Lots of benches to sit a spell and enjoy the view.

A must do on your list while near Boulder City

By Mudhutbob64 |

Definitely a must-see while visiting Boulder City or Hoover Dam. Lots of Big horn sheep grazing casually on this large field next to a playground. I recommend not having little kids try and touch or play with these beasts cuz they look tough. Other than that, just a great thing to do that's totally free,

Best place to see Big Horn sheep

By sharrongeg |

Every time we have out of town visitors….A trip to Hemenway Park is a must. Usually we will do the railroad tunnel hike (easy) then hit Hemenway on our way into Boulder city for lunch. 90% of the times we have visited….the big horn sheep are enjoying the lush green grass.

With plenty of parking and zero cost, it is always a hit

Big Horn Sheep Worth It

By jdck |

We drove to the park and the highlight was to watch the Big Horn Sheep crazing with beautiful homes nearby. Chilling and watching animals was relaxing and a nice reprieve from our travels. There was a small playground area.

Baaaaaahhh

By Bugbytes |

Coming back from visiting Lake Mead we saw the Big Horned she grazing in a park. We hipped in, parked and walked up to where they were grazing right in the park, with babies. A nice, quiet interlude.

Go to see the Rams

By Leah B |

So cool to see so many Rams just wandering around!
These rams just hang out in the cute little park, and are quite happy for people to stop and take pictures!
Definitely worth the stop!

Small Average Park

By Katie G |

We stopped by on our way back to the strip from the Hoover Dam. I would have been disappointed if we drove all that way just for this park. We didn't see any Sheep. Its a very small park though it is very nice. Would have been great if we had our kids with us but this was an adult only trip. There was a play area the kids would love and the view from the park of the lake is nice.

Beautiful Setting with Big Horn Sheep

By kghudson |

Came here for a picnic lunch hoping there would be big horn sheep here. We were not disappointed - there were 5 sheep here - 2 rams, a baby and 2 momma sheep. They are majestic creatures and so cool to see up close. They left the park and walked thru the neighborhood to get to the mountain and walked right past us in the car. Please be respectful and do not feed or get too close. A must do if in the area

Bighorn Sheep!

By Kathleen L |

My favorite part of traveling to Las Vegas from Arizona is spotting the bighorn sheep in Boulder City. When we traveled in February, we saw a nice group of ewes grazing in this nice park, which is why this review received an "excellent"!

Great stop in Boulder City

By Lisa J |

We were told about this park from some of the shops people in Boulder City. We were so glad they mentioned it! While it's not a huge park, the big horn sheep who graze here in the daytime are super cool. Our son (13yrs) loved seeing them and was able to get pretty close but at a respectful distance. It was a really cool experience and would recommend stopping by if you're in the area to relax under a shady tree and see the sheep when they are around.

Beautiful area

By saradE7460MR |

Very clean park. When we first pulled into the parking lot, we thought maybe the goat part wasn't true but they were down a slope. We really enjoyed watching them. For the most part, they were either eating or laying down. Lake Mead looked gorgeous from that viewpoint.

Amazingly close to the wildlife

By Jim T |

Hemenway Park in Boulder City gets you face to face with the wildlife. These Rocky Mtn Sheep are so habituated to people they almost get close enough to touch. Kids playing on the grass and playground don’t bother the sheep at all. What an amazing place. Located on Ville Dr. Off Hwy 93 (Great Basin Hwy). Don’t miss this one.

Nice park

By James G |

We came here early in the morning hoping to see the bighorn sheep. No luck, but still a nice park. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit, but nice to stretch your legs if you are in the area (or are futilely trying to see wildlife)

WATCH FOR SHEEP

By Been There Done That |

The sign says, "WATCH FOR SHEEP." This has nothing to do with a Timex. If you want to see a profusion of Big Horn Sheep, this is usually the place to do it. Most days there are several families of them, lying and grazing in the grass. They are used to people so they are not skittish. HOWEVAH, they are Wild Animals. Respect their territory. You can watch from your car in the parking lot or venture down the hill to be closer. Remember the above. Also, the hills have other denizens that can ruin your day: Scorpions, Tarantulas, and (drum roll) Rattlesnakes. Watch where you walk, don't run, and keep shoes on your children. Enjoy!

Awesome

By NVtoSF |

We loved this park. It was right by our hotel and was a perfect place for our kids to rid themselves of all their energy. The play equipment is very nice. I was disappointed that we didn’t see any of the big horn sheep the couple of times we went the park. I’ve never seen a park with such pristine green grass. There wasn’t a brown spot on it. The view of the lake is great as well. Bring your kids here after visiting the dam, you will be happy you did.

Must see

By LvGypz |

It's so peaceful and beautiful. Best part was the big horn shop, just hanging in the park. Please don't approach, thi is their living room.

One of the only spots in the world where you can see bighorn sheep up close

By Bluewater_2004 |

I'm so glad I read about this on TripAdvisor. Between July and November these animals come down to graze in this park from the nearby mountains. They're used to people but you have to use common sense since they're still wild animals - so make use of your telephoto lens and don't get too close! We stopped by two days in a row since we were in the area - the first day there were about 25 sheep there, the second day there were around 40. It was amazing watching the baby trying to butt its mother's head after seeing two rams locking horns. A National Geographic moment!

Hard to believe but true!

By PNWtraveler1 |

I read what other people said but was having trouble believing it. Drove to a tiny park in Boulder City and there were about 40 Bighorn Sheep lying in the grass. You can get pretty close to take photos with a backdrop of Lake Mead. Definitely worth a few minute detour if you are on your way to Lake Mead or other local attractions.

Bighorn Sheep As Promised

By PasssionateTraveler |

We went here after our rafting trip down the Colorado River, on the recommendation of our guide. She pretty much guaranteed we would see Bighorn Sheep and she was right. Looks like a nice family park to enjoy, but all I wanted was a photo of the Bighorn Sheep. Score!

Relaxing

By Gracie F |

This park is on the way to Hoover dam. I stop by every time I can to admire the majestic Nevada big horn sheeps. They don't mind people as long as they don't get bothered. Definitely a place to try on your travels.

Bog horn sheep

By HappyJana |

I love taking visitors to see the big horn sheep. It also has a good view of the lake and a playground.

Sheep City

By Paul S |

If Las Vegas is known as sin city for what goes on there, nearby peaceful and serene Boulder City should be known as sheep city for the wildlife that gathers to graze in Hemenway Park. Let's be clear: these are desert bighorn sheep, not longhorn, pronghorn, orange (our guide said one foreign lady only gave him one star because she misunderstood what he had said), mountain goats, or even rocky mountain bighorn sheep, a somewhat larger species. This is a species that is facing massive habitat destruction and encroachment and have adapted to mowing the park's grass for free. Many have collars to track their movements to help make sure they are still around for another generation to enjoy.

Great chance to see Desert Bighorn Sheep

By Bill S |

When traveling out of Boulder City toward the Hoover Dam, take a minute to stop off and see the wild sheep in this park. They are there most days behind the tennis courts and picnic area. The park itself is nothing special but nice, as the sheep are the main attraction.

There desert bighorn sheep were a plenty today 🙂

By Todd F |

We arrived around 11AM on Dec 19. The desert bighorn sheep were out and about. We enjoyed watching them for about an hour and a bit. They finally wandered out of the park. This is definitely worth it “IF” the sheep are out. Its a cute little park with bbq grills and a shelter for a picnic/shade.

Hemenway Park: Fun, free … and fantastic!

By Don H |

Hemenway Park in Boulder City might be the town’s most enjoyable attraction that tops even some of the spectacles of the nearby Las Vegas Strip.

Hemenway Park, not far from Hoover Dam, is a public park that daily attracts a herd of big horn sheep from nearby hills to munch on the lawn and rest in the shade. The big horns are quite accustomed to humans.

Since 1967, Nevada has used this herd to repopulate big horns around the state, growing the population from less than 3,000 in 1967 to more than 12,000 today.

A nice place to stop & stretch your legs

By Mrymerry |

It's free because it's a public park.

Seeing the Big Horn Sheep stroll through the park & pay almost no attention to the humans is kind of cool. We laughed because the sheep were on some of the playground equipment.

The kids even enjoyed seeing them.

Take a quick peek

By Lisa S |

I read in the paper that bighorn sheep come down from the mountains and graze at this small grassy park. So we took a ride and there they were just 10 feet from us! If you are driving by stop there you might get lucky and see them.

mountain rams

By Serena W |

Just before getting to Lake Vegas (great view of lake from here) there is a neighborhood where the mountain rams come down from the mountain and munch on the residents' landscaping. They LOVE the berries on the china berry trees. They just roam around - all over the place. Interesting and fun to see. Quick 10 minute side trip.

Rams are there seasonally

By NanKansasCity_MO |

We went 1/27/2015 and no rams were to be found. The sign at the park states that the rams stay up in the mountains until the vegetation is scorched. The mountain there are real rocky so I am assuming in the late spring and summer the vegetation is no more on the mountain so they come down to the park which is probably watered. However, pretty little park and great view of Lake Mead. Plus, the big homes in the neighborhood surrounding the park are also something to drive around and see.

Up close view of Big Horn Sheep

By Bridgette333 |

Hemenway Park is a "Must See" if you are going through Boulder City to see the Hoover Dam. Our family has always stopped by this city park to see the Big Horn Sheep. There must have been 40 of them this time. It is very quiet and peaceful there. They have a beautiful home looking out over Lake Mead.

Guaranteed Spot to take Photos of the Bighorn Sheep

By CA R |

You can go to the Hoover Dam to try to catch a glimpse. You can do the Black Canyon Raft Trip to try to catch some on the side of River...If disappointed not seeing any...STOP AT THIS PARK ON WAY OUT OF BOULDER CITY!!!! They all gather there to eat and relax. Great Photo opportunity!

Serene natural beauty

An enjoyable lunch watching long horned sheep graze. Clean facilities and challenging walking paths.

Check out the Sheep!! Nice place picnic and let the kids run around play. Has Tennis court and grill for you meat lovers-

Excellent Place for Nature Viewing

By Albrights |

Very cool experience with the park overlooking Lake Mead with a great view. Big horn sheep also tend to graze at the park, which is neat to see the wildlife so close.

By Francis D |

Lovely little spot with a view of the lake and some shady trees. Gazebos will likely be booked ahead, but if you have a larger group you can Book them on the Boulder city website.

Amazing!!

By Grant M |

Visited in early August and I’m so glad we did. Play ground for the kids to play on, beautiful view of lake mead and a chance to see big horn sheep up close. Easy stop between Lake Mead/Hoover Dam and Las Vegas!

The Rams up'close!

By Mike D |

We went on a tour of Hoover Dam. On the way back to Las Vegas, our tour guide Mark stopped here so we could observe the herd of big-horned sheep. My wife was able to get very close to them.

Beautiful.

By Anthony C |

After bypassing this place for many years i finally checked it out, and so glad i did.
I got there mid afternoon to be greeted by at least 35 bighorn sheep "chilling" in the sunshine.
A few males, mainly females with their young totally ignoring us.
The parking area is big, there is a playground and the views to Lake Mead are amazing.
A great place to have a picnic in this great little town.

So. Cool!

By Stef F |

On a lovely October day, we popped into Boulder City for breakfast at the Coffee Cup then perused the town. Neither of us had been to Hemenway Park. It's actually pretty tiny, tucked away the edge of a residential area overlooking the lake. Honestly, we had no expectations. WHICH MADE THEM BEING EXCEEDED SO RAD! Even as two people who have spent almost 30 years of their lives in Vegas, we didn't realize how little bighorn sheep are! So we sat down on this random bench all by itself, looking out at the lake, enjoying the perfect weather when we saw what we thought was a dog laying in the grass 25ish yards in front of us. Nope!, it turned out to be about 15 bighorn sheep. They didn't do anything spectacular, but it was so peaceful watching them graze, bask in the sun, play, repeat. Eventually, they made their way closer & closer to us & moseyed right around us (we could have touched them!) to make their way home.

Big Horn Sheep!

By nancy b |

Arrived to this beautiful park and we were delighted to see many sheep had come down to eat the grass. They were not even bothered by people milling about taking photos of them at all. It's a wonderful park to take children to play as well a place to sit and enjoy this Oasis in the desert.

Great Rest Stop on Las Vegas Hiway-Kids Will Love It

By MoviemakerLasVegas |

On some days in the Spring and Summer, the park is covered with hundreds of Big Horn Sheep. Stay in your car and watch or bring a picnic lunch or take out from town and sit at the picnic tables. Kids will never forget.

A chance to see the Bighorn Sheep up close

By SBVegasAdventures |

A great park with great views. This is the place to go for a chance to see the Bighorn Sheep up close. There were no less than 30 Bighorn sheep there when we visited. You can get close to them for a photo but they are wild so do not get too close. We also saw rabbits and quail.

Bighorn Sheep

By DanielHarn |

If you have lived in Vegas for any length of time, you should have heard of the famous park in Boulder City that is home to quite a few Bighorn Sheep. That park is Hemenway Park. It's a nice little park but the main attraction is the Bighorn Sheep who eat and relax in the park before going back up into the mountains for the night. They are used to people around but you should stay as far back as you can, they are wild animals. If you are looking to show your kids some nature up close, you can't go wrong with visiting here.

OMGoodness - What an INCREDIBLE HONOR

By e s |

I had read about the Big Horn Sheep and the possibility of seeing them while visiting Southern Nevada had me anticipating the opportunity...We drove in at the absolute PERFECT time and saw so many casually grazing on the green park grass. This was by far, one of the BEST things I did on my recent trip!!

The park has a playground for kids and pavillions perfect for a picnic and also restrooms.

Don't miss this park

By Beverly M |

The mountain sheep visit this park usually everyday. they are beautifully animals and we enjoy watching them. It is a nice park with covered picnic area with BRQ grills.

Morning viewing

By Edward G |

We arrived at the park around 10:30 and talked to a local person who lived up the street. He told us around 11:00 they all come down from the hill. He was right.

Good park for kids

By Jim O |

We came here after the Santa Train ride. The kids packed their lunches. We spread out a tablecloth to avoid the bighorn sheep droppings. The playground was built for kids. The grandson's remarks were "Better than eating at a restaurant. " 37 bighorns strolled around in the grass. About an hour of playing and the kids were tired. Nice park, we've been here many times before. A definite place to visit.

Have Realistic Expectations, Show Some Respect

By J D |

I'm a retired Las Vegas photographer. I had wanted to go to Hemenway Park for many years, but I got old instead. I had some visitors over this past weekend (Jan 2023), and they knew I had wanted to go so they made me go. I warned them that there was a good chance we wouldn't see any bighorn sheep, but they insisted. I insisted on taking my dog. Dogs are not allowed in the park, understandably, so we agreed that one of us would stay in the car with my dog while the others went into the park to take photos. We staked out the park on google maps street view, decided where to park so the dog wouldn't see the sheep, start barking, and scare them all away, and chose a path into the park so as not to scare the sheep away. When we arrived (about 2 pm), there was plenty of parking - on the street, in the Hemenway Park parking lot, and in the nearby Bighorn Park baseball fields. We found the perfect parking space, and the sheep were out grazing all the way up to the street. I counted eleven total. Two looked mature with big horns; the others looked younger with still-developing horns. In the park were three teenage girls laughing and dancing within about 20 feet of some grazing sheep. The girls paid no attention to the sheep, nor the sheep to the girls. I took a more tactical approach and walked quietly around the back through the grass. I was able to get within 20 feet as well, and the sheep were fine with that. Unfortunately, it was overcast and in the 50s, so no great photos. But it was a good enough experience to make us want to return in the spring when it's warmer and sunnier. If there are no sheep there when you visit, get over it. It's not like they operate a zoo or a business with set hours. It's freakin' wildlife. The sheep come and go as they please. As far as the nearby residents being hateful toward tourists, I don't get it. There are high walls separating the residential areas from the street, so just stay on the main road (Ville Drive) and you shouldn't have a problem with the residents. If you go just to get a few snapshots, it can be done in less than one hour. If you plan a picnic, one to two hours. If you're willing to hang around 'til you get that perfect shot, you could easily spend all day there. Whatever you do, go with some realistic expectations, and show respect for the animals, the locals, and other visitors. It's not rocket surgery.

Best Free Attraction close to Vegas.

You could go looking for Big Horn Sheep in Red Rock and if you are lucky you may get to see one from a distance. Or you could stop at Hemenway Park on your way to Lake Meade and see a herd of twenty or more just playing and eating away. The only problem is they only come to the park certain times of the day. We have seen them about half the visits to the park. Lunch and dinner time is best I think.

Big horn sheep up close

By McWett |

This is a great park to stop and have a picnic while watching the big horn sheep eat, sleep and sometimes play. The younger ones butting heads testing their mettle.

While they not be there everyday you might find them down near the highway or up above the houses.

See our flock of Big Horn Sheep!

By Keith H |

Over the years we've lived in the area, we've visited Hemenway Park to see the big horn sheep dozens of times and only once or twice have the sheep not been there when we arrived. They come down during the day to bask in the sun and munch on the lush grass of the park, then in the evenings, meander throughout the adjacent neighborhood into the mountains to bed down. It's truly a hidden gem: free, easily accessible. And you can bring some food and enjoy a picnic for an hour or two, or you can just stop in for a few minutes to see the flock.

go every time

Went twice this visit, first time around noon only 1 sheep to see,2nd visit 4 pm must have been over 100 sheep. Remember they are wild so dont get too close. Nice playground here if you jave little ones. Also look in bushes , we saw some kind of quail and the absolute tiniest bunny I have ever seen

Hemenway Valley Park is popular for the local Desert Big Horn Sheep that visit...they are very cool to see..

Hemenway Amenities: There's one shaded picnic/dining area but plenty of grass fields. The playground and swings for the kids will keep them busy for awhile. There's a fenced basketball area with 6 hoops that offers one regulation full court or two smaller full length courts. There's a horseshoe pit and there's a great view of Lake Mead on a clear day. There's some dirt mountains on the lake side where you can hike up quickly to get a better view of the lake.

Hemenway Desert Big Horn Sheep: It's awesome how the Big Horn Sheep just kind of roam around peacefully in a group. They are completely oblivious to the Human audience watching them chill out peacefully. The sheep are very social with humans and they were comfortable with only being a few feet away. Still take precautions as they are still wild animals.

Overall it's a small park but you're here to hang out with the Desert Big Horn sheep. It's definitely worth one visit to check out but I'm pretty sure I'll be back one day. Enjoy!

Very cool to see the Big Horn Sheep!

So cool to stop and see the sheep grazing at this kids park. Our tour guide stopped here on the way back from the Hoover Dam and we saw at least 35 of them! Must see.

Bighorn Sheep Park

By JLars34 |

Great little quiet park off the side of the highway. The main draw here is that there is a local heard of bighorn sheep that like to frequent this park. Very docile and you can get relatively close to take some great pics and just watch them. Park has tennis courts and a playground.

Filled with sheep at 9am

Was wondering if we'd get lucky enough to see some sheep, and BOOM there were a dozen or more when we arrived after breakfast.

See the Big Horns

By Frank C |

Excellent place to get photos of big horn sheep. Be patient, sit still, and let the big horns graze. The quieter you are the closer they will come, then carefully and slowly take photos. I really dislike people who try to approach these wild animals, and scare them away!

Bighorn

Awesome place to go visit, very clean and easy to get to and enjoy, the bighorn sheep are so cool, will come right down from the mountain and feed on the grass in the park ,in front of you

Nice place to see Big Horn Sheep

By Jeff S |

We came here hoping to see the bighorn sheep. A group was feeding near the back. It was soo cool to see them. Not worth the time it the sheep aren't there.

Worth the visit!

By Brigitte J |

It was such a wonderful, relaxing experience watching these majestic animals roam the park!
We visit Las Vegas several times a year and I'm amazed that it is right off the main road...we never even knew it was there! From now on, we will make it a point to stop by on our way in to Vegas every time.

A View of Local Wildlife

By Runner771941 |

A wonderful stop to see the Big Horn Sheep. But you need to know if they are in park as they don't come down from the mountain if they have enough water or are having off-springs.

What a View!

By scrappymel |

We visited twice while in town. The sheep were wandering about in the evening when we visited. We took breakfast to the park and ate overlooking the lake the next morning. This park is beautiful and serene. Wish we could have stayed much longer!

Wild Big Horn Sheep

By pat b |

The clerk at our motel suggested a visit to Hemenway Park, to see a herd of wild Big Horn Sheep. We were expecting some type of preserve but it is in fact a city park where children play on playground equipment while sometimes as many as 200 sheep roam about munching on lush green grass. Stand or sit still in one place and if they want the grass where you are they will come within a few feet of you. No sudden movements. They are wild and it is illegal to harass them. No dogs allowed in park for obvious reasons. Story boards along a walk way tell about the herd. It was amazing to be so close to them.

Big horn sheep!

By shescrapbooks |

I’m so glad I discovered this park while researching our trip on trip advisor! It’s a great little park all in it’s own. We stopped by in the morning and kids played on the playground and my husband and I meandered around and enjoyed the views of Lake Mead. No big horn sheep were around. After a full day exploring the Hoover dam, we decided to stop back and were so glad we did! The big horn sheep were grazing in the grass and I was surprised how close they came to us! We did not disturb them at all, but they were fun to watch for a bit!

Big horn sheep!!!

Small quite park. The big horn sheep come down and find shade in this park. Enjoy views of lake Meade and have a picnic.

FREE! Big Horn Sheep

By Denise_D07 |

Can you beat a FREE attraction? It's not really an attraction, it's an actual neighborhood park. But, the Big Horn Sheep - just show up here. They lounge around on the hill. Marvelous to see! If you are vacationing on a dime, or not, this is absolutely perfect. I wish we had packed a picnic lunch and ate here after visiting the Hoover Dam on our way back to our hotel in Vegas.

Love this park with friends and family

We love to bike and sometimes drive to this park.
Great View of the lake and enjoy watching big horn sheep.
Great stop for kids in every ages....

We Loved This Park

By James G |

We were told about this park by a member of the Lake Mead River Cruise and are so glad we stopped in to see the big horn sheep. My grandson loved the merry go round and slides. We spent an hour playing and watching the sheep. The restrooms were very clean, this is a great park.

Run Sheep Run

By patroo |

The sheep aren't always here, but when they are, they're well worth the stop. Give them their space, as they are wild animals. Bighorns aren't often seen in such convenient locations.

Unexpected, wonderful surprise!

By KLJNJ |

Someone in our group had read about Hemenway Park. Since we would be passing so near it on our way back from Hoover Dam to Las Vegas, we decided to stop. It was dusk and we didn't see any sheep so the kids just played on the playground a bit. When we got back into the cars, we spotted some sheep way up on a hill and we were thrilled! We decided to try and drive a bit closer to them and, as we turned onto a nearby street, a small herd of sheep (about 8-10) were walking toward us. We stopped the cars and they walked right by us! Such an amazing memory...one of the best from our entire trip!

Tiny park - Bighorn Sheep

By eroknyc |

Randomly asked someone in a restaurant in Boulder City for a recommendation and they told me this. I was not disappointed. There's a little random park just off the highway that had about 30 or so bighorn sheep just chilling out. I tried not to get too close, but I think they're a little desensitized to photographers. Anyway, if you have a few minutes on your way, this is a great nature stopoff to see the sheep.

Beautiful view

By Robin M |

We stopped at this park for a look at Lake Mead. It was beautiful. In the grassy area of the park were approximately 20 big horn sheep that came down from the mountains to eat the grass. It was great to get some good pictures of both the lake and the sheep.

Big Horn Sheep!

By nikolaik |

I read on TripAdvisor that you could see the sheep at this park. I was somewhat skeptical as it was really hot out - but we stopped by after a tour of the Hoover Dam and found the sheep resting under the shade of a tree. We didn't get too close but got some great photos and our kids loved it. Highly recommend!

Sit and watch the mountain sheep!

We sat on the bench next to the tennis courts and watched a herd of about 40 mountain sheep grazing, and relaxing. It was a REAL wildlife treat!

Nice spot to stop and take a walk. The day we stopped we saw a small herd, must have been 30 animals or more, of bighorn sheep. An unexpected treat!

SMALL PARK WITH BEAUTIFUL VIEWS OF LAKE MEAD

By Chris E |

I live around the corner of this magnificent park and go there frequently. It has a few picnic tables for family gatherings, tennis courts, basketball courts and horseshoe rings. You might need to reserve the picnic tables and tennis courts on the weekend with the Boulder City Parks Dept.

This park is gang and graffiti free courtesy the of citizens of Boulder City....we don't tolerate such activities. The park has surveillance cameras linked to the Boulder City Police and if you want to visit a park with graffiti/crime then head to Henderson or Las Vegas. "Concerned citizens" like myself visit these areas to maintain a sense of security for locals and travelers alike.

NO DOGS ARE ALLOWED...this is because Hemenway Park is a host to the Bighorn Sheep as exampled in the park's photographs. If you are travelling and want your pooch to stretch his legs then you can go between the park and the adjacent softball field. Also, there are other parks in Boulder City which allow dogs...just please pick up the dog dung!

Bring your camera...there are some awesome views of Lake Mead and the surrounding mountains and the Bighorn Sheep may be grazing around the park. All activities at this park can be photographed with Lake Mead and the local mountains in the background which is why this park is popular to photographers.

There's a clean restroom stocked with the paper essentials and there's a "convenience store" nearby located at the corner of Highway 93 and Ville Drive for last minute purchases. Downtown historic Boulder City is close-by so visit that during your trip for a nice friendly small-town atmosphere before you go into Vegas for an opposing environment.

No Climbing Involved With These Bighorn Sheep!

By Seamaid2 |

We were house hunting with our real estate agent right near where we were staying at the Quality Inn in Boulder City. He pointed out that bighorn sheep regularly come down to graze on the rich grass at Hemenway Park. There is a playground, picnic tables, and park benches as rams and their females composing harems ignore the human guests and go about their way munching grass, butting horns and getting frisky with their lady loves! Remember that these sheep are wild. I wouldn't advise getting too close. July through November is the rutting season. Some of the more mature rams had
humongous horns. The tour guides keep a close eye on folks moving too close, but some visitors on their own threw all caution to the wind, even coming close with their children.
It is best to photograph the herd with telephoto or long lenses. You can do this just by sitting on a park bench! This is about the easiest wildlife photography that I've ever seen!
This herd used to be instrumental in a breeding program for other locations until about 2013 when members of the herd were found to have been infected with a condition
that halted the breeding program.
This is one of the best wildlife viewing experiences that doesn't require any special skills in finding them!

Bighorns in the park

By Suzanne |

We drove to the park just to see the bighorn sheep I had read about. I didn’t realize it was a small park as such and relatively right in town but they obviously don’t care. Sure enough, they were lounging away up on the rocks comfy as could be! A few were on the green grass and just went about their business like we were not even there. They look perhaps like an older group, a little thin but what a great place for them to hang out. No worries here. Loved seeing them! Fantastic!!

Wow!

By AKT0707 |

I heard about the wild bighorn sheep coming to graze at the edge of Boulder City in a public park. It was on my list of things to see though I didn't know what time of day they liked to feed,or how frequently they came to civilization. We navigated our way to Hemenway Park after visiting Hoover Dam. We found two parks, one with swings and picnic tables and wonderful views of Lake Mead and.... there they were! A herd (flock?) of more than a dozen bighorn. Two wore tracking collars. Information signs explained that they were protected and efforts to increase their population from only 3000 animals were successful. You were warned to keep your distance, though the animals ignored us and half a dozen other visitors as they munched their dinner. A highlight of our Nevada trip!

Amazing views

By Brittany K |

The sheep were really cool to see seem very docile with the amount of people that kept trying to walk up to them. The park is clean and offers much for people to do. The views of Lake Mead were amazing.

Great park to visit !

We wanted to go to this park for a long time. We were hoping that we would see some big horn sheep and we weren't disappointed. What a fun place to go with a beautiful view of Lake Mead !

Lovely Surprise- Sheep in the Park?

By nancyjdolan |

We had read about Hemenway Way Park on Trip Advisor on our way to Hoover Dam. We stopped before going to the Dam about noon and no one at Park; no sheep to be found either. On leaving the Dam several hours later, we stopped again. Plenty of sheep grazing all over the park ! There were several park naturalists on site as well to answer questions. It was so relaxing to watch the sheep there and talk to the other visitors there. Don't miss this opportunity!

A nice place to relax and at times see bighorn sheep.

By Joseph S |

This park is located right at the base of some mountains where a herd of bighorn sheep live. It is a very popular place for tour buses will stop by to let the tourists get a close-up look and some pictures of the sheep. This time of year they usually don't come down until late afternoon. The park also has a small pavillion, a playground and a basketball court.

The Big Horn Sheep are back

By Jeannet1957 |

This is a nice park. They repaved the on park parking. There are new signage around the park. AND the sheep have babies . . . we have seen 4 new born sheep. in and around the park - very cute.
Remember the park has flushing toilets, tennis courts, baseball fields, several covered sitting areas, grills, and kids climbing walls and swings. Something for everyone.
And the views of Lake Mead are really nice.

Nature in Front of You

By mauiwolf |

This is an ordinary city park with tennis courts, a gazebo, picnic tables....oh, and herds of bighorn sheep.

Yes, it's an unusual place. They come out of the hills, wander through the neighborhoods, to sit on the cool grass in the shade of the trees and just chill.

What's nice is that it makes it easy to get great pictures of these majestic wild animals. And if you're lucky some of the rams will decide to do some head butting. That's an awesome sight to see.

Many photos added. Fun Visit in Boulder City

By NitroDog |

Was surprised to see them there in the 107 degree 1pm heat. I would have thought they went into the rocky hilltop to cool off. Gorgeous animals, a little baby sheep hiding behind mom, probably not used to humans, as there were 3-4 kids just running about and screaming. Must-see if visiting B.C. with a rental car. B.C. is what the "locals" in Las Vegas call Boulder City. Look out for the Sheep pellets (poop) they are all over. I will return the next time I am in B.C.
