Best tour in the region

By yblain |

Je3ff won't butter you up with fancy wine-speak - he's an engineer. But you will learn more about the art and science of wine making in Hendry's two-hour tour than anywhere else. Friendly, informative and beautiful surroundings. A must-go.

Oh yeah, almost forgot: their Cabernet franc is terrific.

Educational and in the dirt

By jdog99 |

This in the end was a worthwhile visit but not what we expected. This was a very hands on and educational tour getting into the details of the grafting and vine growing process. We also walked the vineyards to see different grapes and how the vines differed and we had a chance to taste grapes off the vine which was fun. If we were dresses properly and it wasn't 95 degrees outside it would have been much better but none of that is on the winery.

Most comprehensive tour in Napa

By Cooperspale |

George was our guide for the afternoon and he was excellent. His approach to the wine business is from an engineering background so there's a scientific aspect to it. Listening to George, you can't help but feel enthusiastic about wine, one would think that he has wine literally flowing through his veins.

Walking through the vines, we got an A-Z on growing grapes, the terroir, how the different grape parts contribute to your glass of wine.
We then went to the wine production area, where we were shown some of the machinery used to separate the grapes from stems, unripe and rotten. The red wine was undergoing malolactic fermentation and the smell was quite strong.

At the end of the tour, the tasting started. 11 wines and George went through everything with them right down to recommendations on food matching.
One of the best tours I have ever had the pleasure to attend, and I've been at a few in Europe and Australia.

Very education wine tour!

By Phin McGovern |

I did the afternoon tour and tasting, which was about 2 hours starting around 2pm. You can definitely tell they put a strong focus on the science that goes into wine making, between the stories of the owner and the explanation through the tour and tasting. It was very informative and quite interesting to hear their philosophy and practices, unlike any other tour I've been on. Highly recommend for anyone looking beyond the typical tasting.

Taste 10 wines

By familytime000 |

We did the tour and tasting. The person conducting our tour/tasting was great. The wines are very good. This is a small winery in the Carneros region. We enjoyed it.

Great wine tasting experience

By lori d |

We went on the tour and tasting after reading some of the reviews on Trip Advisor. We expected a great experience and we got one! They only take a small number of people which helps to keep it very conversational and interesting. The tasting was an incredible experience. Our host was Tamara (I think I got the name right) and she shared with us how professionals taste wine and develop their palette and knowledge. It was really interesting and not intimidating at all. None of us were very experienced, and it was great to be able to ask questions, and offer our opinions on what we were smelling and tasting. The wines are wonderful, and you can put the price of tour/tasting towards purchase of wine. We also got a great recommendation from her for a restaurant in downtown Napa called Zuzu to have dinner at (Spanish Tapas). I look forward to bringing friends to tour and taste and Hendry in the future.

Fantastic Tour!

Great educational tour; large wine tasting selection.

The science of wine and beyond.

By sigichloe |

The was by far the most informative of all the wine tastings we encountered in Napa. The owner, George Hendry gave us a real wine education from field to table which lasted for well over two hours. Among the many concepts explained by far the most fascinating involved how tannins affect your taste buds and how food interacts with wine. By conducting real experiments with his wines you came away with a clear understanding of how and why specific wines taste the way they do. Regardless if you're a wine novice or expert a visit to Hendry's must be your first stop in Napa. It's basically wine 101 and will change the way you look at wine.

A great education

By jorgeBelmontBay |

George Hendry personally gave us a 2.4 hour tour , very informative overview, and tasting of 10 wines for the low price of $20.! He also demonstrated wine pairings with examples of cuisine. I learned more about the wine industry in 2+ hours than I did in 30 years of consuming wines!

OK Tour; Great Tasting Session

By TheObjectiveCritic |

Overall, the winery tour was just OK, But the tasting session was worth the trip. Great for learning about wines and wine tasting. Side by side tastes of similar wines prepared in different styles is very instructive and really helps you learn what you like (and don’t like) and why, and how wines literally taste different depending on whether your food is sweet or oily/fatty. Wines are reasonably priced and pretty good quality. Aside from that, the tour of the winery itself was nothing special, especially for people who’ve previously toured wineries. Hint: the winery isn’t prominently marked. GPS will get you there accurately, but there isn’t a directional sign; there’s just a small marker on a mailbox where the driveway meets the road. Note: tasting fee is waived with a modest purchase.

Surprised

By prlanci |

Wonderful vinyard located just west of highway 29. Well worth the visit. Tamara gave us one of the most informative tasting, taking the time to explain all the nuances of the wines. Try the Albarino of you want a new white.

Great First Winery - Lots of Info

By PGE27 |

This was our first tour and it was fabulous - loaded with information. The seating tasting was fun and informative. the tour and tasting fees were waved if you bought wine - which of course we did. It was a great experience.

Best Wine Tasting and Tour Experience You Will Have

By Molly B |

Living in DC, I've visited and tasted at roughly 15-20 vineyards in the northern Virginia area, so I'm not new to the wine experience. Hendry Vineyards blew all of them out of the water. While on vacation in San Francisco, my fiance and I decided to take a trip up to Napa. We found Hendry through the excellent Trip Advisor reviews, and decided to book a tour/tasting. George Hendry, the owner of the vineyard, gives the tour and leads the tasting. His passion and knowledge for the entire process- growing to tasting to pairing- are on display throughout the entire experience. You could go to any old vineyard to taste wine. If you want to really learn about wine, book a tour and tasting at Hendry. I could babble on for paragraphs about my experience, but I'll keep this short and sweet. If you only have time for one vineyard in Napa, make sure it is Hendry Vineyards.

Totally different wine tasting experience

By Devon A |

I've lived here for a couple of years and was an engaged tourist for years before that. Wine tours are all a little different from each in that each winery has their own story to tell. The Hendry experience is different from any other tour/ tasting I've done. Jan was our Guide and she has a great sense of humor and a huge repertoire of knowledge. She's very laid back but anxious to address any question. The property is gorgeous. The tour is very educational and the tasting is even more so. Even if you are a real enthusiast, you will enjoy the nuances they impart to you with regard to enjoying your wine. It's nice that they limit to about 8 people so it's personable. The wine is delicious and reasonably priced.....you'll likely go home with some.

A hidden Gem Worth the Visit

By Jeffrey L |

A hidden gem for a great winery experience. We had a private tasting while learning about the history of Napa and how the winery played a role. Still family owned/operated and the wines are very enjoyable.

Educational & Friendly! Make it your first stop!

By Anna M |

First off, ignore the one star review. He's a moron.
Mr. Hendry is very kind and his wine tour/tasting was the most education I've ever done! I learned so much from his tasting and it was worth every penny (even if they didn't reimburse the $75 with a wine purchase). I visited here with three friends and we all felt this tour was a fantastic first stop in Napa.

Deserves to be #1 destination on TripAdvisor

By happytraveler1528 |

We made a reservation to visit this winery after reading all of the positive reviews. We generally don't visit wineries that don't have distribution on the east coast. However, we were intrigued. George Hendry is the consummate wine guide. As the vineyard owner, he speaks from the heart and is open and frank about the challenges he and his family encountered in developing their wines. We left this tour with more knowledge about producing wine than we had learned anyplace else.

The wine tasting included 11 wines with side-by-side tasting to explore the subtle differences in same types of wine made with different techniques or aged differently. This wine tasting takes 2.5 hours and is worth every minute.

Excellent tour; nice facility

By JimW551 |

By appointment only. Worth going as you will learn a lot. Small winery and the wines are nice, but not great. But it has a super location and history. Would recommend going on a tour if you can book it.

Gem of a tour

By KosTravelisLife |

This was a fantastic, informative learning experience! After walking through the vineyards for an hour, we toured with winery, cellers, etc and then sat down for a detailed tasting of some 11 wines.

The cost of the tour is 20$, but is waived if you buy wine worth 20$ or more.
One of the best tours I've been on. Period!

Overall, we found the Napa wine circuit to be a lot more 'touristy' than the Sonoma side... except for hidden gems like this place!

Go here first!

By Heather J |

Definitely go here first when you visit Napa. You will learn so much about wine. I have taken a few wine classes before so I wasn't sure how much I would learn from this tour but there was such a wealth of knowledge to add from George, the owner and guide of Hendry Ranch.

Our tour and tasting was almost 3 hours long. You will go out into the field where he will show you where each varietal is along with how they are grown. From there, you will see how the grapes are processed and barreled. The tasting ends the tour where you try 10 wines and learn how each should be paired.

The wines are ok but the tour alone is worth the visit. If you buy a bottle, the $20 tour and tasting fee is waived. Win, win!

Great tasting stop

By KateForbes |

We made an appointment for a tasting and enjoyed our time with Megan learning more about Hendry and their wines. She did a good job of giving us insight on the history of the winery and also the way that the family runs it. I found the information about how they choose information for their labels to be particularly interesting in comparison to others (more scientific, less what you *should* taste). We weren't rushed, felt very welcomed and learned a great deal. Definitely one we'll come back to (and look forward to drinking all the wine be bought/shipped).

Wow great tasting experience

By Jegyed |

The winery is a little off the beaten track making for an intimate experience. We tasted many great wines and learned about the vineyards and history of the winery. Tasting fees are forgiven with an equal wine purchase and believe me you will likely be doing that.

Best Tour in the Valley

By Deb S |

Mr. Hendry knows his stuff - don't you doubt it. He changed my life with his knowledge of tannins and food - so thank you Mr. Hendry!! This lovely family-owned winery is a treat to visit and the wines are a wonder to taste. Plan on two hours for a very insightful and personalized tour. Check out their website - appointments are a must.

excellent tour

By slmeath |

highlight of our stay, very informative and views were amazing. Mr Hendry was very passionate about his vineyard and wines and that created a great experience

Best experience of the week!

By Daisyartpeggy |

Two hours of education and tasting. I learned more about wines here than any of the wine classes I have ever been to. Family owned and priced well. Delicious wines loving made. This is a must stop for any Napa visitors.

A great place to learn about wine

By velagato |

This was the last winery on a 4 day trip to Nappa, and I will have to say that I learned more here about choosing wines than in all the other places combined. George Hendry is passionate and knowledgeable about wines and this shows not only in his approach to conducting a tasting, but also in his product. I was tempted to buy some of each wine we tried there, but limited myself to three. Absolutely fabulous.

Hidden gem

By Josie F |

Very personalized experience. Great wine, great history. Beautiful property. Very customized to your liking. Not pretentious, but delicious wines. One of our favorite!

Wonderful, informative and fun

By at9x |

We recently took the Hendry winery tour with the owner of the Ranch, George. This was an amazing experience. We decided to sign up for the 1.5 (ended up being closer to 2 hour) tour and I must admit I was hesitant. I do not find most winery tours to be good and generally don't take them. This was the best tour I have ever taken. I learned more about wine and about tasting wine from George than I have learned in 12 years of drinking wine. While I enjoyed touring the ranch and the wine making/barrel storage areas, the best part by far was the tasting experience. George took the time to explore the wines with us, and teach us about pairing the wines with foods. I never really understood how food changes and improves the taste of the wine. What a wonderful experience! A huge plus, was the quality of the Hendry wines. They were almost all wonderful. I would recommend this tour to almost anyone, the only exception would be loud, rowdy groups. George takes this very seriously and so this would not be a good place for a Bachelor/Bachelorette party who wants to drink and party.

Best personal wine tour in Napa!

By napavisitor |

George Hendry leads you through the vineyards and the wine making room, through the barrels and finally to the wine tasting room where you sample 11 different wines. The only detailed (2 1/2 hours) tour and tasting you need to book in Napa!

By mainlebo |

If you are looking for a genuine, unique tour experience where you will learn about growing to bottling, this is it. George Hendry is about as down to earth as they come, but you have to be willing to invest 2.5-3 hours. It's not flashy, but it is extremely educational. It may not be the best wine you taste on your trip, but is is good and includes 11 varietals. I highly recommend this tour if you want to learn a lot about wine and you enjoy a great family story.

Poor customer service

By Tina W |

I contacted the winery and spoke with Amber (60 days before our visit) to coordinate our larger group's celebration for a neighbor turning 50. Our group is traveling from Texas and I am meticulous with all plans to coordinate a great experience. We were told the largest size they take is 6 but they would try to accommodate 8. I booked it and planned accordingly. I called a week in advance of our trip, and I was told our reservation was not on their books and we would not be seated. The winery had all of my information and had simply placed us in the holding queue without actually reserving our time/date.

We have reservations across the wine country for this trip and this is the only winery that has completely failed us. I spoke with Linda who could not care less. She said another group had reserved and we were out of luck.

This is particularly disappointing given all of the calls and coordination. Thankfully, there is plenty of competition and opportunities to patronize others.

This is your 1st stop in Napa!

By echaffin |

This is my 2nd trip to Napa and I've visited 8 wineries. I wish I had visited Hendry's first. We were honored to have George Hendry as our guide and he is the best! Hendry's has a great story as a family vineyard, and George is a true treasure. His knowledge and straight shooting about the business are unparalleled. We were there over 2 1/2 hours. Where others appear to want to get you "in and out" George took his time explaining and answering our questions until there were no more. The wine tasting portion is at the top of the list too. You taste 11 different wines and George takes you through food pairings and why they work and don't work with certain wines (there is no actual food to taste just his explanations). Start here and then you will have a true measure of the other wineries and their tours. My bet is none will rise to the same level as Hendry's!

By BKMorgan |

Driving into the winery we wondered if we were at the right place or if we just entered someone's residents; it was both! George Hendry himself took us around. He spent almost 3 hours educating and explaining all aspects of the winery & his wines. We tasted 11 wines sometimes comparing the same varietal that was handled differently & how that changes the taste. George also gave very simple instructions/guides on how to pair the wines. I really enjoyed listening to him talk & he and his staff were all very friendly. Highly, highly recommend this tour.

Yeah, it's #1 on tripadvisor for a reason

By jm222 |

There have been many previous reviews that are thorough, so I will just reemphasize a couple points. First, if you are new or even relatively new to wine, this tour is exactly what you need. If you leave this tour without a good basic understanding of the wine making process, it's your fault. Like others have said, if you just want to drive around and drink wine then skip this tour/tasting. However, having said that, you are not deprived of what was our coolest tasting of the trip. George gives plenty of wine in the tasting. More importantly we really were educated on the importance of food pairings. A great demonstration was given on tannins and their effect on your taste buds, along with how food pairing can neutralize the bitterness associated with tannins for some people.
This was one of our first tastings/tour of several days all over wine country and this one helped educate us while tasting at others as well. Sometimes we knew much more than the person pouring our tastings after the George Hendry education we received!
They are also a great example of what a small business should strive for. They have been economically conservative, and obviously excellent employers as their employees have average tenures their over 20 years!

Great Experience!

By Candace W |

We visited Hendryband it is an awesome experience. It's not commercialized and when you visit its like your getting a personal one on one tour. The wines are excellent and George is informative. A definite must see when you visit Napa.

Great Boutique Winery a Tour From the Owner

By CMacDRC |

If you are looking to escape the tour busses & slick cattle call of many of the large wineries then look no further than Hendry. George Hendry the second generation owner & man who does it all will take you on a personalized tour of his vineyard. He loves questions & we learned so much about his wines & their pairings with foods, to the different wines that grow in different lots. It was so fun to spend time with someone so passionate about their vocation. It is a quaint little family operation in which their full time staff hand pick the grapes & do literally everything. You will learn a ton & appreciate the smaller wineries. george is a straight shooter & dispelled many of the wives tales that he has spent a lifetime 'unlearning' Great tour & we'd highly recommend it. Another fellow was there who had done extensive tours & claimed that this was the best one

Living legend...

By Desert Road |

I cannot describe beyond what others have said, only to add the following...
You are in the presence of a Napa Valley treasure when sitting in front of this individual, hearing about the local history, the local economy, environment and wisdom of having lived a tough life and built something that has enriched the valley and all those who come in contact with this place. If you are a student of history, wine, whatever - your inquisitive mind will appreciate this. Book the long tour!

Jeff made the visit

By Megan O'Leary |

This was my first winery tour - and everyone else is going to have a tough time measuring up to Jeff's tour at Hendry. Jeff gave us a great overview of the grape-growing and wine-making process in a very funny and matter-of-fact way. He also gave us an almost scientific tasting at the end (he'll tell you right away that he's an engineer first!) that was very eye-opening. He also focused a lot on pairing foods with wine, which I appreciated. I learned a lot, I laughed a lot and had a great time.

For $20, you get to taste 8-10 wines, or they waive the fee if you buy a bottle. Their wines were delicious, so it was a no-brainer to take a few bottles home with us.

Highly recommended.

Our favorite napa winery

By JC F |

We had a blast our fist visit here so we decided to comback. This time, we took the 10am tour/seminar with Mr. Hendry. Very knowlegeble and he really took time to answer our questions. The tasting was also fantastic, I learned alot about tasting wine properly and why food is paired better with certain wines. The tour fee is waived with equal amount of wine purchase. So we ended up buying 5 bottles and joining the wine club. Some of our favorites are: red, zin, barrell fermented chardonnay and primitivo.

Tip: Book your tour ahead of time. Space is limited to 8 people.

Enjoyable/informational winery tour/tasting

By Casey M |

Hendry was by far the best winery tour and tasting we visited in our weekend trip to Sonoma and Napa, CA. George Hendry personally showed us and 6 other visitors around their family winery, sharing lots of fascinating information about grape growing, harvesting, wine fermentation, and aging. The tasting was equally informative which made it all the more enjoyable. It helps so much to understand why wines have certain flavors and properties and thus go with certain foods. We have a really enjoyable time and would recommend this tour/tasting to anyone.

Interesting Wine Tasting/Tour

By browngirl45 |

We signed up for the tour and tasting of this family's wine and winery. The tour was very calm. However, the tasting was quite interesting. A wealth of information was given and I learned things about wine and pairings that I didn't from other tours. I would recommend skipping the tour and just doing the tasting.

Perfect - Should be a 10 Star

By Mantis |

If you only visit one winery, Hendry Family Wines is the one! Hendry is a small family owned winery. The principal owner, George Hendry, age 81, conducts the 3 hour wine tasting presentation. His presentation covers everything, from soils, to root grafting, to growing, to the harvest, to fermentation, and to how we taste wines. It is so interesting, it seems like you are there only 30 minutes. George is so very special and makes it all so interesting. My wife, who does not particularly care for wine absolutely loved the 3 hour tasting, and really enjoyed the wine tasting with George's explanations of how we taste wine. She wanted to attend the same presentation the next day, but we had other tastings to attend. Everyone who enjoys wine, and even those who do not, should attend the 3 hour tasting. The wines are really exceptional and each bottle you purchase reduces the tasting cost by a comparable amount. We have been to Napa-Sonoma many times but wish we had gone to Hendry all of those times. No one will be disappointed.

Intimate and wonderful experience

By Debbie P |

My husband and I really enjoyed our Hendry visit and would really recommend it. The tasting is done in a private room and our host was very knowledgeable and was very patient in explaining the vineyard history and their wines. After visiting numerous vineyards, we realize that the most enjoyable ones are with the boutique vineyards like Hendry where we get to learn a lot more and get to interact with the wine makers directly. Would highly recommend! Do say hi to their cute dog Gracie!!

This is what wine making is suppossed to be!

By Twobair |

If you truly love wines then Hendry Ranch Wines is the place to visit. Not only will you be guaranteed to taste amazing wines but you have the much added bonus of truly "learning" MUCH about how the wine makes it from vineyard to glass. As all of the other reviews note - you should plan at least 2 1/2 hours for your tour. This isn't a "stop in and taste" place. Wear comfortable walking shoes and appropriate clothing since you'll be walking a bit into the vineyards. They provide sunscreen - fyi! You'll enjoy learning about the "blocks" - or the addresses as I like to think of them as - of every grape that makes it into a bottle. You'll notice that George has kept the business of labeling very simple and easy to understand. Their wines need no fancy names - just an understanding of where the fruit grew up! It's kind of like when you meet people for the first time and they ask "where did you go to school?"

After tasting, I'd recommend joining their wine club. It's well priced and you'll receive hand selected wines on a regular basis. A great way to ensure you always have a bottle of Hendry on hand for any ocassion!

Engineers Rejoice!

By Gary H |

Meticulous craft wine making--See if you can get a tour, not easy. Magnificent property. They have hosted 11 wine dinners at Stage Left in New Brunswick, NJ one of NJ's top restaurants. A value buy

Excellent Tour

By Dan N |

The tour was a great way to start our Napa experience. We covered all the basics of winemaking in a fun and interesting way. Then there was a wine tasting with pairings so we could actually tell the differences between the various wines. The entire experience was great and I would highly recommend other travellors to go.

Hands down, best tasting.

By Doverho |

George takes the pretentious out of wine tasting and gives you a true education. Great tour and tasting.

Hats Off to George Hendry!

By smee33 |

By far the best wine tour and tasting we have ever had! Not only was the tour of the vineyards and winery very interesting and informative, perhaps more importantly George used the tasting to instruct each of the participants about his/her own palate and which wines pair best with what foods. The cost of the tour and tasting is $40 per person, which, if like us you chose to buy wine, is applied to your purchase. Certainly a worthwhile way to spend an afternoon.

A wonderful experience -- AGAIN!

By coastalgardener |

My husband and I visited Hendry Ranch last September and enjoyed it so much we took a small group back this September. If you are really interested in grape growing conditions, how wine is made and how it affects your palate, this is the place to go. No pretense OR dog and pony show here! George is educated and passionate -- very down to earth and you can tell the winery is his life. Wonderful staff onsite and the time we spent was worth every penny we paid. We are not wealthy but we do know excellent wine when we taste it.

Every one in our group of 10 though it was tops! We joined the wine club during our previous visit and look forward to receiving EVERY shipment!

A great wealth of knowledge

By pfttraveler |

My wife and I did the 10 am owners tour. We were glad we did. George Hendry is a wealth of knowledge and a rare resource. He has been on his ranch since for seventy years. His explanation on the economics, science and art of the winery business was exceptional. This is not your normal wine tasting with a few drinks and a few laughs. This is a learning experience from the Yoda of Napa valley.

Very informative---best tour I've been on

By Abbey F |

Make sure you check out this tour. It is very informative and you will learn a lot about why you like certain wines. I've read a lot of books and I learned more on this tour than any of them.

Great fun, lots of tastings!

By salidatious |

Friends from SF recommended this vineyard. We really enjoyed ourselves. The tour was interesting and informative. The Vineyard is run by engineers so there's lots and lots of interesting geekery about the equipment and modifications they have made over the years. The tastings were also lovely - about 11 wines in all which was good for us as we only had time for one vineyard visit. Would def recommend a visit to anyone who'd a) like a tour with a twist or b) like to sample lots!
Useful tip - tour is $20 but if you buy wine of same value it's free!

10/10 Recommend!

By Jessica K |

I’d give this place 10 stars if I could. Wow. By far the best place we went on our weekend trip to the area. Crazy great service. Outrageously excellent wine. The story is so cool and I’d come back here anytime!! Book a tasting slot here and I promise you will have an exceptional experience!!!

Wonderful experience

By Tom D |

Our first stop in Napa and could have stayed for hours. Jeff led the tasting and discussion was entertaining and very informative. We learned so much about wine and also tasted their excellent wine. A great winery to begin your stops in wine country!

Hendry gets my highest recommendation!

By lbl54 |

The Hendry winery is just what we hoped to find in Napa. Small, family-owned, unpretentious, beautiful location, friendly knowledgeable staff, and great wines at value pricing. The Hendry family began farming these lands over 80 years ago and started making their own wines over 30 years ago when they found that their grapes were going into some of Napa's most esteemed vintages. The winemaking includes "best of" methods and equipment. Their recent "Reserve" bottlings of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are extraordinary without the "vanity pricing" of many Napa wineries. My guess is that one reason these top-quality wines are so affordable is that they aren't paying a mortgage on the land that they own outright. I've joined the Friends of Hendry wine club that lets me adjust the selections to my preference and provides free shipping on the case. Plus the invitation to their member appreciation events and other tasting benefits. Really look forward to returning. Hendry gets my highest recommendation!

By Memillikan |

My husband and I loved touring Hendry's Ranch winery. The tasting session was extremely educational and the wines were spectacular. George Hendry is an amazing professional. We highly recommend this winery and are thankful we found this on tripadvisor.

George knows the science of wine

By Dorothy E |

We did the Seminar Tour and glad we did. George gives you the science behind wine making and how to better enjoy wine when properly paired with food. He provided a tour of his ranch and an explanation as to why certain grape vines grow better on different area of his ranch. The tasting he did was fabulous, where he let us taste 9 wines and pointed out how your taste buds are affected by the wine. He explained how the food you eat with wine will affect your taste buds and even make a great wine taste mediocre if not paired correctly. I recommend the experience for all who visit Napa. And yes, they waived the $150 tasting fee for the two of us when we bought at least that amount of wine. A Win-Win experience!!!

Fun and Informative

By nowakklmt |

This was the perfect winery tour for people who have a general interest in learning something, even if they aren't big wine enthusiasts. Took Mom and Aunt (in their 70s and never venturing from White Zinfandel) and Sister ("I only like White") and we all found George Hendry to be a knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide for each step of the process, from explaining the effects of weather, growing and tasting the grapes, observing the fermentation vats, and the effects of the proper casks, bottles, and corks. We also learned where the pricing comes from for different varietals. This is followed with a 9 bottle tasting to demonstrate the effects of the processing.

The tasting is a great presentation on which foods go well, or not, with different varieties. The groups are small (12 or less) so there is plenty of time and opportunity for questions. "Oh, that's good! Oh, I like that!" followed several of the Reds once we understood what and why we were tasting. The tour fee offsets any wine purchases-

Just when you think you know it all

By cjdotheworld |

Having been to wineries and vineyards all over the world, this was a way to fill some time. Those few hours with George were downright priceless! We learned about aspects of winemaking and growing that we'd never heard before. George is a hoot! The tasting after the tour is both informative and entertaining and most generous in number of wines sampled and size of pour. We were very impressed by his wine pairing recommendations; it made us want to schedule dinner at his house that evening

Wonderful (and unexpected!) private tour

By Dawn M |

When we asked our hotel and family for a tour/tasting recommendation, they recommended a more commercial and extremely popular vineyard. I knew we wanted something more unique, and Hendry was the perfect choice! My husband and I concluded our day in Napa with the 2 p.m. 1.5 hour tour and tasting. When we arrived, our host Theresa (hopefully I remembered her name properly!) informed us that the other guests could not make it and it would just be us three. What a wonderful tour and tasting--complete with adorable rescue dog Honey following alongside! Theresa was full of knowledge without being elitist, and we left Hendry knowing so much more about wine making than we ever thought possible. We highly anticipate the arrival of all the wine we ordered. Go to Hendry; you will not regret it.

By Cristal L |

The property is very beautiful and the service is outstanding from the moment you reserve over the phone. Very easy to find property and we started on time. We were lucky enough to have the owner George Hendry as our guide, try and get him he is wonderful. You can tell he loves what he does and makes your time worthwhile as a learning experience and gives you no bs, just as he says. He is more than willing to answer every question that comes to mind and even during the tasting gives you suggestions of which wine is best combine with what kind of food. Plus he goes into the science behind it all. I would go again and take my whole family.

very entertaining and knowledgeable staff

Their session (in room only) is excellent for beginners as they really spent time to explain the differences between the types of (their) wine and you get to sample 9 of them.

They also seem to really care for their products so you'd find yourself very comfortable buying them for knowing efforts been made to produce them.

palate-wise I think they're just average, but my friends like them and joined their membership (well, to each their own)

A great tasting experience

By LLLLLNNNNN |

We had an excellent guide who told us about the history of the place as well as the background on all the tastes wines. Some of the wines were delicious (all the reds, I am not a fan of Chardonnay but others in our party enjoyed those as well) and we ended up buying several. Highly recommended both for the wine and for the experience itself.

Amazing Experience

By MJF-USA |

We did the tour and tasting at Hendry. The tour was fun, educational and relaxed. As first time Napa visitors we were happy to experience their wines in such an easy atmosphere. The tasting fee is waived if you buy wine in an equivalent amount.

A Must Do Wine Tasting and Tour!

By Sagar P |

Napa was my first time doing a proper wine tasting and tour. This particular one was incredibly informative and fun! The owner, George Hendry, who is also an engineer served as our guide. I felt though his unique background he was able to explain everything about wines in an easy to understand manner. By the end of the day I left with a great understanding about how to pair wines with food as well as the entire wine making process. The tour and tasting combo is $40, but it is waived with an equivalent purchase of wine which I found to be an awesome deal. To sum it up, this was the best wine tasting and tour I went on during my time in Napa, I highly recommend it to anyone that wants a gain useful knowledge about wine!

Fantastic Experience

By luglug99 |

This was one of our first stops in the Napa Valley. It did not dissapoint. Great tour led by Jan and Sadie the dog (so awesome). Was able to eat the grapes right off the vine, learn about wine making, and what makes Hendry so unique. We tasted about 10 wines and the tour/tasting fee was waived with purchase. Can't wait to visit again!

Beautiful vineyard

By Yasmin M |

We visited Hendry and did the 11 am tasting. It was very informative and we learned a lot about the how the grapes and the terrain. The farm is peaceful and quiet. If you prefer a smaller setting then make sure to reserve a spot with this winery. There is a beautiful patio where you can have a picnic after the tasting and make sure to bring home some of their delicious wines.

Highly Informative

By lubedog |

We spent a month in Napa and visited over 40 wineries. Our visit to Hendry was one of our best overall experiences. We spent almost 3 hours with Mr. Hendry going over every aspect of his business. It was our first visit and really helped us to be more intelligent wine tasters and visitors for the rest of our stay. This was like a Wine 101-102 class. The wines were good the experience was great.

By Clj555 |

My fiancé and I loved this place! Our tour guide, Jan, was awesome! I can honestly say she is the only ballerina/ chemist/ wine-maker I have ever met. Learning that Jan's husband and George Hendry produce cyclotrons was also fascinating. The scientific backgrounds of the employees really set the tour apart from others. The main difference in this tour from others however, is that you get to try 11 different kinds of wine. Wow! The cost is $20, which is waived with the purchase of a bottle of wine. The wine is excellent and super affordable! I would recommend this place above any other winery, hands down!

Good Information and tasting

By kmalay |

I had a day to visit Napa and I picked up HRW based on reviews at Tripadvisor.
April is not best time to visit vineyards. There was nothing to see there. The buds are still to come out. I did not get a chance to visit any other winery but whatever I experienced was worth a visit HRW. Good 2 hours tour with 10 different wine tasting and knowledge about different wines. I bought a wine priced at 23$ and the 20$ tasting was waived.
Overall good trip but disappointed with time of the year I choose to visit.

We love George

By Mitch W |

He is awesome. Best tour in Napa as far as overall wine information not just about selling their wines.

Highlight of our trip

By Flatcoatfun |

You must make reservations in advance! We reserved the winemakers tour and it was the best thing we did in Napa. The down to earth facts and knowledge helped us during the rest of our wine tastings in Napa.

Bundle up as even inside it was cold. Fortunately he kept our walk in the vineyard short as there was a very cold and strong wind that day. But even in the winery and also inside the tasting rooms, it was cold.

Very worth it though as he explains everything from economics of wine making, to how to taste correctly. If you purchase an equivalent amount of wine they will wave the tour cost, so that is a great deal.

Best Napa Tour

By LaurieK24 |

This is by far the best winery tour in Napa. We went on the three hour tour that is led by the owner George Henry. What a treat!! We walked the winery with George after a brief talk about the history of the ranch and the different grapes. We then proceeded into where the grape pressing was taking place followed by a tour of the facility and an explanation of the process. After the tour was the tasting - not just a tasting but an education in the science of drinking wine and food pairings. What a great tour! Would highly recommend both the tour and the wine!

A Must-Do for Novice Winos

By Joe M |

Based on numerous suggestions from Reddit, we opted to do the 3-hour seminar and tasting, and it was more than worth it. Promptly at 10am, we met Mr. Hendry, who started by giving us a small history lesson on his family and the farm and how it transitioned to a full-blown vineyard and winery, as well as his extensive educational background. We then were taken on a tour of the winery, where Mr. Hendry led us on a deep-dive into the winemaking process and the science behind it. While his explanations on the various chemical interactions were highly detailed, he explains them in a way that may be easier for most folks to follow along (he also encourages questions during his lessons). The seminar is a must-do for anyone that wishes to know more about the science and chemistry behind winemaking.

After the tour, Mr. Hendry took us to the tasting room where he walked through how to taste wine, how different wines affect your pallet, and numerous tips on wine pairing. The wines were simple and excellent, and your seminar fee is waived when you buy wine (no brainer).

George Hendry is an intelligent, experienced winemaker and scientist, and it was a pleasure watching him work and teach. If we could go back in time, the only thing we should change is that we did this seminar earlier in our Napa vacation, and not at the end.

Best Tour of the Valley

By scryals |

Tour is given by the winery owner who is an engineer. If you are looking for a technical tour of the wine business then this it is and the wine tasting was the best ever! Mr. Hendry gives you great educational information about wine and food pairings. Can't wait to get my first shipment of wine as I joined their wine club!

Excellent 2 hour tour, $50 pp

By d828 |

As others have said, a great tour room learn a lot more about wines. At $50 PP tour fee which comes off wine purchases, you are guaranteeing yourself that you likely will be spending that much on wine here. Folks don't seem to mind just good to know in advance. Make appt.

An excellent lesson in wine & wine making

By Lena W |

When I began planning my trip to Napa a few months ago, I did some searching on TripAdvisor and came across the Hendry Ranch. I read some reviews, and made the decision to book. After a three hour wine maker tour, I can 100% understand why the reviews were so great.

The tour group was five people, and was led by George Hendry himself. It was great to have such a personalized experience, and the small group size allowed for more direct communication and gave us the opportunity to ask questions and really learn the ins and outs of the winemaking process at Hendry. George showed us some of his vineyards, and then walked us through the fermentation process, followed by showing us the barrels of wine, and finished with a wine tasting that was more of a lesson.

The wines we tasted were fabulous, and the lessons about food pairings that went with each sample was a great addition. It was also interesting to learn about tannins and why certain wines taste better or worse with each sip (and how to avoid the bad taste!)

The tasting fee is waived with purchase of the equivalent amount of wine, which was very easy to do!

Thanks for a great experience!

Wonderful tour!

By carriefromcharlotte |

Jeff was a fantastic tour guide - very witty and fun! Loved hearing how they made their wine since they do things a bit differently since they are engineers! Wonderful way to start off our Napa vacation and we loved their wines! Jeff taught us a lot - yet in a fun way! We got to even sample a "corked" wine vs one that wasn't - that was pretty fun since I never knew what to really be "looking" for (or rather smelling) when seeing if a wine was corked or not. Overall a beautiful farm and a fun tour!

Personal touch and family run winery..

By ohiogal |

Loved the fact that we had our own wine tasting on the porch. Blankets and heater was available too. One of the few place that is family own d grows their own grapes and bottles it. It’s not a corporate sell out. Loved the personal touch and attention. The wine is wonderful. The tasting fee was forgiven if you purchase equal or higher amounts of wine. This was our favorite stop while in Napa!!

best winery tour ever

By jacka82942 |

george gave us a 3 hour tour and tasting.Learned more about vineyards, grapes and food pairings than we've learned from all previous tours combined.if you take this tour, you won't need/want to take any other to learn about winemaking.
We got to sample 11 different wines in a nice seated atmosphere with george giving us a tutorial on each along with what to eat with each..the wines were all excellent.420 fww waived if you buy something

By TFloc |

George Hendry takes you on a tour through his vineyard and then the winery. All the while he shares his encyclopedic knowledge of growing grapes and making wine. The experience ends with side by side tastings of his wines. Two hours well spent!!

George is a class Act

By Maritime96 |

George Hendry is a class act and the way he tells a story and weaves into education about the wine making techniques and process pulls you in. I didn't expect to be all that interesting in the innards of wine making (was going for my wife mostly). I dare say my expectations would have been realized on a typical tour with a typical guide. I believe it was George's demeanor, humor and passion for what he does would leave most powerless to refrain from also being pulled into his stories and his wine making insights. Thanks George for beating expectation and striking a chord in me on a topic where I didn't think there was a chance.

Great tour to start out your Napa visit

By streake |

Mr. Hendry is definitely a character you will remember from your napa vacation. His farm tour is very comprehensive, you will learn a lot. I didn't love all the wines in the tasting, but everyone's tastes are different. I would still recommend this tour to friends because it is a great way to learn about the agriculture and the wine making process.

If you are at all technically minded this is a must do. If you aren't, at least you can get a free tour by buying wine.

By ocaptainmycaptain |

As a pilot and as a general contractor I deal in the relationship between the theoretical and the practical. Having the opportunity to meet with the winemaker/owner of a vineyard is a treat, especially when he has a scientific approach to explaining the magic of good wine. Both my wife and I left feeling like our experiences with wine have been forever altered with the knowledge of how, at a molecular level, food and wine interact with the user interface. After dozens of wine tours around the globe I can say without hesitation that this was my best wine related experience. Plus, if you buy wine equivalent to the fee, he waives any charge for the tour! I was all to happy to pick out $150 (two people toured) worth of wine in exchange for his time and knowledge. Thank you Mr. Hendry!

Great tour and very educational...

By mjzalord |

This was by far the most educational tour we took in Napa. We were able to tour the grounds and the vineyards. Then we were ushered back into the tasting room and were given and education on oak vs no oak, tannins, why wine tastes different with different foods. It was phenomenal. Highly recommended.

Amazing Wine Tour

By Wiltonsjs |

One of our friends suggested we go for the tour at Hendry Vineyards in Napa. We'd never even heard of it. Tour was conducted by the owner, George, and it was amazing. He's a bona fide original, engineer/scientist/farmer -- man, they don't make them anymore like George. This was the most educational and entertaining winery tour we've had anywhere on Planet Earth. Go if you can, truly!

A Profound Learning Experience

By James L |

We learned a ton about wines, winemaking and drinking the wines (and pairings) during the tour and class. The owner (tour guide) was very knowledgable and was able to explain wines from a scientific point of view as well as a business viewpoint. A great way to start your tour of Napa wineries, in my opinion. Do the winemaker's tour. It's expensive but they'll apply the price to any purchase.

The best tour!

By JMG117 |

This was one of the highlights of our visit to Napa Valley. Jeff was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. Great place to learn about the winery business, and the basics of wine-food pairing. The wines we sampled were excellent and we ended up buying a variety of them. Great deal, but best of all, a lot of fun!

Great tour wine too

By mlouk |

We enjoyed our visit to hendry. We were lucky that they were harvesting also. It was an intimate tour and detailed which appealed to us since we're nerds and were very interested in th process.

Best Wine Tasting in Napa

By BobandDeb |

What a treat wine tasting is at Hendry! Four of us had reservations for the 11:00 wine tasting (the earlier tour with George was full). When you enter the house, Tamara greeted us and brought us into a room with two other couples. Sitting at the table, Tamara gave us an informative lesson on the Hendry family, the grapes, and of course, we learned about the six different wines that we tasted. We all learned so much, and it was really interesting, not boring at all! It made us want to come back another time to book a tour. We went to two other wineries after this one, and they didn't even compare to this! The tasting fee is waived with wine purchases - you will want to buy their wine! The ambience of the ranch, and friendliness of the employees was outstanding. Thanks Tamara for a great day!

A Fine Education

By Philigirl |

My review is quick because I am writing all of my reviews from my San Francisco trip today. I think the other reviewers touched on what makes the experience worth while. I would just add that having been to both Napa and Sonoma before this tour is one of the most educational ones that I've experienced. I would highly recommend this tour.

Great Tasting

By NVShirleyH |

Megan gave us the most informative wine tasting I’ve ever experienced. The wines were excellent and reasonably priced. It is a small, family owned winery and they prefer a personal touch, so appointments are required, but I was able to call one day and get an appointment the next day. We were able to taste 7 wines for $30, and the tasting fee was applied to any wine purchase. I purchased the Red blend which was one of the more expensive wines, but worth every penny.

Great experience, real winery visit and tasting!

By rsl56 |

I went to O'Brien Estate Winery and to Hendry Ranch Wines and found a much better experience at Hendry. The tour costs something like 20-25usd but it is worth every penny. The guy who gives it is very knowledgeable about the process and goes into great detail. He even took us to the vines taugh how to identify good grapes for harvest. The tour ended with a tasting of 10 wines with very good explanations. Completely worth our time

Best Winery Tour!

By Katie F |

If you like or want to learn the science of wine and have 3 hours to spend enjoying a tour and tasting, you must take a trip here. It's $40 for this sort of tour, and you have to make a reservation. You might think that's a lot of money, but it's well worth it, and they comp the tour if you buy an equivalent amount of wine!

Mr. Hendry is incredibly knowledgable and takes you through the history of his vineyard - he tells you what he learned over the years, and even a few mistakes he made that helped him learn. After answering all your questions and taking you through the vineyard, the small tour group sits at a table for a tasting of what seemed like at least 10 different wines. Again, an incredible, personal, educational experience...and great wines!

Educational and Fun

By IMForever28 |

Based on Trip Advisor reviews, my husband and I booked a tour with Hendry Ranch Wines. It was every bit as good as all the reviews say. Jeff was our tour guide. He was very informative and made us laugh as well. This is a very personalized tour and isn't scripted. Hendry's passion for wine is apparent throughout the tour and tasting.

The tour is only $20 per person and the fee is waived if you purchase wine (why wouldn't you?).

If you are looking for an educational and fun tour, make this your first destination. If you want to go somewhere flashy and elaborate, choose one of the other wineries that spend more money on their showroom and produce lower quality wines.

It is a little tricky to find Hendry. There is a small sign on the side of the road. Turn in there and keep going...go past the old house and the tasting room will be on the right

By Alissa2179 |

This was my husband's and my first stop for wineries on our Napa/Sonoma trip and it was perfect! We called a day ahead and made a reservation for a tour & tasting and were very impressed. It is a small winery, where the owner, manager & managers wife give the tours. The "manager", Jeff gave us our tour. Being as he is originally by profession an engineer, I felt that his terminology, demeanor & approach to running a winery was very helpful and appreciated by most everyone on the tour. On fact, it kind of ruined it for the other tours we had later that week; but I digress... The wine was fantastic as well. We wound up ordering 3 bottles and can't wait to get home to have more than the tasting allowed. I'm not sure I'd bring food for a picnic as one other reviewer said here, but definitely stop in & visit. It's totally worth it!

Authentic, tranquil setting and delicious wine 🍷

By DodgeRog |

We managed to arrange a tasting here at short notice on our final day in Napa - and we are so glad we did. Everything about this place is authentic, interesting and unique - and the wine is simply delicious. We were hosted by Therese, who was a funny and informative host, who explained the history of the owner, George and the winery - which we found really fascinating. The setting is so tranquil and we loved each and every wine we tasted, leaving with full boxes, all for a very sensible price. If you want something different than the large, commercial, napa experience - Hendry should be the first choice on your list. Thank you for a wonderful afternoon.

Finest tour & tasting experience in Napa Valley!

By TJJones25 |

Hendry Vineyard and Winery provides the most interesting and informative winery tour and tasting in Napa Valley. Hendry should be at the top of the list for many people to visit when they visit. They provide a great introduction to wine and wine appreciation and also offer outstanding quality wines with many different varietals. If you want to learn more about wine, this is the place to visit! The three-hour tour and tasting is well worth the $20 but can be free if you purchase wine.

The ranch has been a vineyard since the 1859 when it was planted by the Sigrist family and was one of the most extensive vineyards in the valley. It has been owned by the Hendry family since 1939 when George W. Hendry, an agronomy professor at UCB and UCD, purchased the property which was taken over by his wife and two sons when he died in 1944. A growing appreciation of premium wines in the 1960s and 1970s led to their move away from plum orchards and dairy farming to focus in vineyard planting. In the 1970s they sold their grapes to Mondavi and in the 1980s they sold to Mondavi, Opus one and Kent Rosenblum. The first Hendry vintage was in 1992. During the tour, you will learn the history of the vineyard and how they decided to diversify by matching different wine varietals to the many microclimates on the property.

After the vineyard tour and history, the tour continues inside the winery where you will learn everything you always wanted to know about making wine. George encourages questions and no question is too simple or too technical for him to manage in a way that is geared specifically to the person asking the questions. He makes everything so clear that you will wonder if he also has an advanced degree in communication.

After two hours or more in the vineyard and winery, the tour continues up in the tasting room where an hour is spent tasting ten different wines. This is not your usual pour and taste experience. George describes what to look for in each wine, what foods it would pare with and helps you to understand wine appreciation. You will taste a wine, proceed to another and then return to the former wine to see how the taste changed. You will taste a wine and then some crackers with olive oil, returning to the wine to see how the wine is now completely different in taste. This is carefully conducted wine appreciation class, not just a hurried tasting. The entire tour and tasting will last at least three hours. (Reservations are required, of course.) Other wineries have good tours, but this is the most comprehensive tour and tasting I know of in Napa Valley. It is no surprise to see that Hendry is the highest rated tourist attraction in Napa Valley with Trip Advisor and why there are hundreds of highest rating reviews on Yelp. Hendry is probably the best place for many people to begin their Napa Valley wine tasting.

All wines are grown on the property so are Napa Valley wines. Many Napa Valley wineries purchase some grapes from outside Napa Valley so they can sell less expensive wines. Usually any wine sold for less than around $20 is not from Napa Valley because of the price of Napa Valley grapes. Wine prices at Hendry begin at $18 for their Pinot Gris, although they also have two other wines for $20 or less. The highest price current release is their 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon at $55, which is the only wine sold for over $38. Varietals include: Pinot Gris, Albarino, Unoaked Chardonnay, Barrel Fermented Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, various blocks of Zinfandel, two levels of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Italian Primitivo and Cabernet Franc. The Albarino and Primitivo are rarely found at any Napa Valley wineries, and you will not find much Pinot Gris or 100% Petit Verdot. So Hendry also offers you an opportunity to taste some varietals that you won’t find at most other Napa Valley wineries.

Our tasting notes of the ten wines would continue for many pages, so a summary seems more appropriate. We did not taste the Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc. Of the red wines we really liked the 2007 Cab, the 2008 Pinot Noir, the 2007 Red Wine and the 2007 Block 28 Zinfandel. The Primitivo was okay but I must confess I find Primitivos to be less interesting than Zins to which they are closely related. Primitivos seem to me to be Zins without tannin or spice. The HRW Cabernet Sauvignon was also just okay. But then it is only $23 which makes it a decent Napa Valley Cab for the price. With the white wines, I liked both of the Chardonnays. It was very interesting to compare the oaked and unoaked ones side by side. Neither one has had malolactic conversion, so you really taste the Chardonnay varietal on the unoaked one and can easily identify the effects of French oak on the other. The Pinot Gris and the Albarino were both good. I don’t drink Pinot Gris very often but love good Albarinos. Most Albarinos in the $20 or less range are not that good, but this one was.

If I had to pick my two favorites, they would be the 2007 Cab and the 2007 Red Wine. The red wine blend at $38 is darned good and very interesting. This wine is a blend of 36% Petit Verdot, 21% Malbec, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc and was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, with 70% of them new barrels. The 2007 Cab is a free run Cab that was in new French oak for 21 months. It is drinkable now but will cellar well. With cherry on the nose, well-integrated tannins and oak and very good balance, this is a very high quality Napa Cab. The 2008 Pinot Noir was also very good, a lighter style Pinot but bursting with red fruit flavors. We really liked every one of the wines we tasted. The overall tour and tasting is a fantastic experience!

Disappointed

By Jen K |

My husband and I visited Hendry because of the excellent reviews given by at Tripadvisor. I was really looking forward to the 2-21/2 hour tour given by George that I'd read about so often. George wasn't with us on our tour and it was disappointing that in 1 1/4 hours, we'd had our tour, tasting and orders were taken for our purchases. My understanding was that only 2 tours were given each day but on that day a third was coming in after ours and maybe that's why our tour was so rushed. I don't think I've ever tasted so many wines in such a hurry. The ranch has beautiful views and the tasting fee was waived on purchase but I wouldn't go back because it was so completely different than what was described online.

Excellent wine and tasting

By frrjames |

What a great tour/ tasting. Prof Hendry who is the current owner was very attentive to our questions as he led us through the beautiful vineyard and winery. What truly sets this apart was his treatment of the chemistry of wine making and how the completed wine reacts with different types of food. It's rare we get to meet and learn from a true expert. Excellent and very friendly and helpful staff!

By SuzMcM |

We loved our tour with Jan! As relative novices when it comes to winemaking and tasting, we really enjoyed her smart and funny tour. She is clearly enthusiastic and knowledgable. The vineyards are beautiful, and the small size of Hendry means you really get a feel for the process. Questions were welcomed. A great afternoon!

Always a great experience!

By Daydream48955329374 |

Rigo was knowledgable, accommodating and a wonderful host! He took the experience to the next level! I highly recommend this wineries' quality and consistency. Great product for a fair price. We will be back.

Best tasting tour in Napa

Make sure you go here first on your Napa visit. George Hendry will give you an amazing education in wine that you can use for other tours. Hendry was the highlight of my Napa stay.

Best Winery in Napa Valley!

By Discover786850 |

My wife and I recently visited the Hendry Ranch Winery and this was by far the bast stop of our trip. We booked the full three-hour wine tasting with Mr. Hendry which was a real treat. Mr. Hendry's family story and true passion for winemaking enhanced the experience more than anything. He gave us a comprehensive insight to not just winemaking but the business of owning and operating a winery long term. What a story!

The wines are fantastic but more than that, Mr. Hendry added his own personal touches to the entire experience recommending food combinations and telling the story behind every flavor. We loved it and highly recommend this as a must-stop for anyone coming to Napa Vally for a full winery/tasting experience.

My new favorite chardonnay is Hendry's Barrel fermented 2016 chardonnay!

Fantastic

By Doug W. |

Not sure about the recent review that only gave this a 1* rating, because they thought Hendry had a "bad attitude". Maybe he should read the hundreds of other reviews that suggest George Hendry is anything but! One of your "crew" was an "international sommelier"...and what...you weren't given special attention for your own commercial advantage? Sounds like you were the snob!
I too, took the 3 hour winery tour/tasting with Mr.Hendry. I've taken several other tours at Napa/Sonoma wineries over the past 5 years. While others may offer a higher caliber wine, no-one gives a better understanding of the wine business...from choosing the land, knowing what area of the farm is most conducive to which kind of grape, to how much moisture is needed, to walking the group through ever area of the property, to answering every question with his 50+ years of scientific knowledge, to the tasting room where he teaches both novice and experienced how to actually know what you're doing when sampling wines. Everyone needs to attend his tour before they set out on the rest of their wine region tastings to fully enjoy and understand how each wine differs from the others. Highly recommended, Mr.Hendry is a soft spoken, passionate farmer with decades of invaluable information. Spend the $75 per person, (it's reimbursed dollar for dollar for any wine purchase) you won't regret it.

To make a wine course so special and fun. A must!

By LindaSilas |

This tour was highly recommended and didn't disappoint ( well maybe one thing, we didn't get to meet George but Meagan was super)
We would recommend this tour as your first so you get more then the basic The only problem is you will leave with many great bottles of wine.
Enjoy

Wonderful Unique Tour!

By Copperpenny22_10 |

I chose this vineyard to tour based on the reviews, and it did not disappoint! The tour and tasting as completely worth it. The owner walks you through every hands-on aspect of the process. Even the one non wine drinker in our group enjoyed the tour. Note: It is on the longer side and you do need to call ahead.

Best Wine Tasting!

By 168Hannah |

Hendry himself gives the tour, and he is great. He gives excellent explanations, and selects 10 wines for each to taste to support his explanations. The wine is also affordable! Definitely worth visiting.

Best Tour in Napa!!!

By Guy M |

Had the privilege to take the Wine Owners tour on 12/26/15 and what a great experience. George was a true gentleman and gave all of us a wine education without the nonsense. George taught me lessons in wine that will last a lifetime and make me a smarter consumer of wine. Thank you George! Make this tour the first one and you will understand Napa wine experience better and learn to avoid the wine nonsense.

Personal Touch

By Clown_puncher |

We got to meet the wine maker, very interesting gentleman. It is off the beaten path but well worth the trip. Try the Primotivo! A zinfandel like wine but more fruity, our new favorite.

Outstanding!

By Mardigrasmama_10 |

George did our tour. Most informative and his pairing info with the wines to food was amazing. Learned a ton!!!

A guaranteed hit

By mukilteomike |

We called in the morning and they got us in on the 11 o'clock tasting. Fantastic! We didn't have much time, so we did the one hour option. It was fun and informative. Next time, though, we'll make sure to allow enough time for the 3 hour seminar. Your tasting fee is applied to the wine you buy making this a total win. This is an easy choice people--go!

Deeper appreciation of the wine maker's art and science

By CANJG |

Best wine tour / education session I have ever experienced at a winery. Most winery tours are really wine tastings.
By the end of our time there we had a much better understanding of the vintner's art and science. From selection of grape variety based on soil, light and access to water.
Choosing the perfect time to harvest. Sorting the harvest and wine production. We left with a much better appreciation of all that goes into making a vineyard work and produce wines at the highest level of quality.

George Hendry's is an amazing a multitalented man.

The Hendry experience is excellent so book ahead.

Wonderful winery to visit, if you want to improve your technical understanding

By Greg C |

This winery is run by engineer types, so their tour is very technical in nature. We spent approx 1.5 hours in the vineyard itself and the winery, tasting grapes, understanding the importance of topography, vine placement, the grafting process, etc. We were taken from planting of the vineyard, to harvesting, to production, and ultimately bottling. That was followed by an almost as informative 1.5 hour tasting inside. It's a great winery to start your visit with, so that when you visit the others where you do a flight of 3-6 tastes, buy the bottle and/or the club, and move on in 20 minutes, you'll have an enhanced perspective for those tastings.

Experience of a lifetime

Today my family (consisting of my parents from Arizona/UP of Michigan, Sister & Brother-in-law from Napa, niece from Redding, my husband and I from Montana) had the most wonderful experience touring the Hendry Winery. George, the proprietor/vintner was such a gracious host, answered all of our questions and ended the tour with a fabulous wine tasting. After our 3+ hour time spent, we walked away with a greater appreciation of wine; from the growing, pruning, picking, processing, bottling and drinking. The bonus was having him educate us on the art of pairing the wine with the food. Thank you George for your time and sharing your knowledge! We HIGHLY recommend this tour for EVERYONE. Plan ahead though, as they only do the tours by appointment. Pam Hayes

WOW - super special

By 454larah |

This was special. After I caused some confusion on our tasting booking confirmation AND then drove past their entrance making us a few minutes late, we were still welcomed with open arms! It's a small, family owned winery run by the owner/winemaker and a team of extremely passionate and knowledgable staff. We enjoyed the casual flow of the tasting experience, yet with so much info on the history of the family/farm and wines. You can feel the love for what they do. And you can taste it! I tasted it most in their Chardonnay, Primitivo and Bourdeaux blend. The tasting fee was waived with purchase of wine and if we could have taken cases back, we would have!

The best.

Great tour by the owner himself. Lots of knowledge in a short visit. Wines to take with you to enjoy later with good friends. Try to get to this one for sure.

A MUST DO!

By LEAH N |

Hendry is a must do while in Napa. I decided on Hendry because of the reviews I found online and wow, they did not steer us wrong.

My husband really knows his wine and the process so he already knew a lot of the information but also learned new things. We had the owner and wow, he really knows his stuff. He's humble, honest and you can tell, he really loves what he does.

I never thought I'd pick up some much information but I did. The tasting was wonderful too, even learned why I don't care for Cabs- even though I left wanting more!

This is a must do while in Napa.

One of my favorite experiences and very informative

By 0074travel |

I read the reviews about the tours on trip advisor beforehand and I have to admit, I was a little skeptical. However, I found that all the raving about the tour is absolutely warranted. This is a must do and was one of my favorite experiences in the Napa area. Jeff led our tour providing quite an education with a douse of humor to keep it light. I learned so much and thought the wines offered a really good value. This is an unpretentious, family owned winery. No airs about this place like some other high end places - what you see is what you get. Note: reservations are needed in advance for the tour. Book well in advance to ensure your place!

Very In-Depth and Interesting

By Matt D |

We were fortunate enough to get to do the Owner's Tour with George Hendry, and we are glad we did. It was a three hour experience that began with some history (and a view!), a vineyard walk, the tour of the winery, and finally, a very informative tasting. Given that his "day job" has to do with science, George enjoyed going into the science behind wine-making and wine-tasting. I felt like I received a quality education in wine, was able to enjoy some great wine, and had a great time.

Slow paced tour to learn about wines

By eddiEEEgirl |

This isn't like most of the other vineyards I went to in Napa. It's a slow paced tour where you actually learn about wine, pairing it with food, properly tasting it, etc. The tour was interesting because Mr. Hendry discussed the business aspect of owning a vineyard and being profitable. He also explained wine production in great detail which I really appreciated. He varied the tour based on what we wanted to know about wine making. I can honestly say that I learned something on this tour.

During the tasting, he specifies that it's not a party. He really does stress the learning component which I liked a lot. I recommend this tour for anyone who wants a personable intimate approach to wine making and the Napa Valley.

I loved that the fee was waived with purchase of wine!

Family wines in the heart of the Napa wine industry

By brenev1 |

We went to Hendry wines recently and loved it. Over the years we have been to many of the wineres and it is always the same big builidgs, big business feel to the tours and the tasting. This was different from the start. Hendry's is a family run business and from the start you could tell. Apparently the Hendry grandchildren were visiting and you could see that they were running around.

The wine tour was a nice personal feel run by one of the Hendry family members. Overall a good tour, good feel an great wines.

Outstanding Winery Experience

By sjlm |

What makes this tour different from other winery tours: it's a mini course in wine-making and wine-tasting; the $40/pp tour fee is subtracted from wine purchases. Having George Hendry, owner and wine-maker, give the tour makes it particularly interesting. It would be on any list of recommendations I would give for visiting Napa wineries.

awesome small family owned winery

By Lincoln L |

if u want to visit a smaller family owned winery that represents the napa valley wine country , u have to visit hendry ranch

Not as Great as I Hoped For

By Sally J |

Hendry was way too over hyped for what it turned out to be. All of the reviews raved about how great this place was and while it was very informative, it got a little boring. Perhaps it was the time we went or the tour guide. I really wanted to like it because of the wonderful reviews, but was let down.
Our group had about 10 people for the 2 PM tour/taste.
Some reviews have said to skip the tour for the taste. I totally agree.
The tasting is what Hendry is probably known for. You do learn a lot and it is in classroom setting. I appreciated the science behind and the huge amount of knowledge our tour guide had. My party just didn't have a great time. It was a miss for our group.
The wines weren't that great either.
I reluctantly bought the wine to cover my cost of the tour/taste. I guess that makes it much more worth it.

Great & Informative Tour!

By jenny h |

My boyfriend and I drove to San Francisco last summer and we wanted to stop in Napa for a day or two. We looked up a whole bunch of different winery tours and decided to go to the Hendry Ranch. I am so glad that we did because we ended up learning so much about wine and the whole process of making wine. The tasting was very informative and we ended up going home and showing off to our friends about our new found knowledge. I loved that they gave us the option of buying enough wine to cover the cost of the tour. I wasn't a huge red wine drinker but after the tour I became one. Now that is basically all that I drink when it comes to wine and I know what kind of food to pair it with also. He was so knowledgeable and he gave us the science behind why wine is made the way it is. Great tour!

Hit on all cylinders!

By Alan S |

Our first visit here was with a small group of friends. To a person, everyone thought this was our best visit. Jeff is incredibly knowledgeable in a most enjoyable way. He combined his engineering analytics with sharing new insights in a relaxing manner. The wines are an excllent value and much was learned about specific wines and food. Overall terrific!

If you REALLY want to learn about wine...

By NancyW260 |

Mr. Hendry led our tour and it is immediately obvious that his primary interest is teaching people about the quantifiable aspects of creating wine. His talk was peppered with terms like 'Phenols' and ... well honestly I can't begin to spell them. This winery is not about show, or luxury, or even marketing but we learned about an aspect of the industry that we had not been exposed to. Yes, he's a bit crotchety and got short with a group of French visitors who were not as attentive as he'd like but in fact they were distracting to the rest of us. If you're just interested in drinking and partying skip this one, if you want a scientific foundation to interpret the rest of your visit start here. Unfortunately while we did buy a few bottle the wines themselves are not particularly memorable.

Low key setting with great wine

By vegout2 |

We made an appointment for a tasting at Hendry and were blown away with tasting. The wine is moderately priced and is on par with the major wineries in Napa. We were so impressed that we joined the wine club (approximately $85 + shipping per shipment) You will not only taste great wine, but also receive an education on the wine making process and debate cork vs screw cap

Amazing experience!! Highly recommend.

By Morgan B |

Our first Napa Valley winery, and it will be hard to top!! We did the three hour seminar with the owner, Mr. Hendry, who is a biophysicist and a wine maker. He explained the economics of wine-making in California, why certain grapes grow better in certain areas, the science of aging wine, and the molecular-level reasons that certain wines pair well with certain foods. We learned so much on our tour and loved that our first Napa experience was a family owned winery. We also love that it’s one of the only wineries in Napa Valley (the only one that we found at least) that you can use your tasting fee towards a wine purchase. Napa tasting fees can add up, so this is great because you get to taste AND take some home with you for a reasonable price.

Mr Hendry is the best

By Faron C |

80 years young. If you want to know the science behind what makes a great wine on the palate, take the 3 hour session with the owner, Mr Hendry. We did 5 tours in 2 days and this was the best. Pricey, but if you purchase wine, they take the total purchase off the tour price.

By Jodygirl79 |

I prepared for our trip to Napa reading about wineries, hotels, etc in Napa, and after reading about Hendry I made reservations for a private tasting for my family of 6. Angela did not disappoint us. She was very knowledgeable about the wines at Hendry and our experience for the "tasting only" did not disappoint. For the $20 tasting fee (waived when wine is purchased) we spent an hour and a half learning a great deal about wine. She was very helpful in describing what our palettes might be experiencing and helping us learn how to articulate those experiences. Our entire family truly enjoyed this winery and the wines themselves.

Very Educational!

By Jeff R |

This is not a typical wine tour, and that is why I made a reservation here. George Hendry himself walked us (small group) around the vineyard and presented the tasting. Since George is a chemist / engineer and the wine maker, this is a very educational tour into wine making. The tasting goes into explanations that you don't normally get at a simple tasting. The wines are fantastic, and so we bought some! Highly recommended for those seeking more. Did I say the wines are all great?

First and finest stop in wine country

By ATLWanderLust |

I think Hendry Vineyard is the perfect starting point for any nerd who wants to get into wine. I use the term nerd affectionately as both my husband and I consider ourselves nerds since he's an engineer and I'm an architect. Hendry was our first wine tour, I scheduled it last minute after reading all the yelp and trip advisor reviews saying if you are engineer, this is the tour to take, and I thought, well we have an afternoon free before a full day of wine tasting in Sonoma, let's try Hendry! BEST DECISION I MADE!!!

George Hendry the owner, led our small group on a wine tour that lasted well over 2 hours. We LOVED this, but if you are not that interested or are already quite knowledgeable about the wine making process, I can see how this would not be everyone's cup of tea. We loved George, he answered all our questions, we had a great dialog back and forth throughout the entire tour and tasting. We tasted 11 different wines, and let me tell you, George is not shy on the pours! The tasting is $20, but waived if you buy a bottle of equal or greater value. We really enjoyed all the wines at Hendry, particularly the Zinfandels and the Cabernets. We actually brought home a case of Hendry wine, and we've since joined the "friends of Hendry" wine club.

I recommend Hendry to wine newbies who like technical details and small intimate groups.

I do not recommend Hendry for wine connoisseurs who do not want to waste over 2 hours on content they already know. I also do not recommend Hendry for groups not interested in technical details of wine but in getting intoxicated and visiting as many wineries as possible in a day.

Hendry was the perfect intro to our weekend in wine country, but it's not for everyone and I recommend doing your research to make sure it's the right fit for you before making your reservation.

Great Tour

By finewine35 |

Great tour and tasting with the owner. Completely worth the time. Beautiful property and great wines! One of our top 3 of the 23 wineries we visited.

One of our very favorite winery visits in the valley

By Jeff H |

We have been Hendry club members for many years. This is only our 2nd time back since the first visit (when we signed up). It is still a pleasure to visit this small winery. George Hendry still runs almost every aspect of the operation, and his way of operating is rather unique to the valley. The place is filled with fun history and stories. Our host Therese taught me more about wine and tasting than I think I needed to learn, but in a very fun interactive way. Of particular note, because of the location in Carneros, there are many different wine varietals than you will see in the traditional napa winery locations. This is approachable and affordable wine that could go for FAR more. You will very much enjoy this spot!

Excellent - needs to be your first winery of your Napa Trip!

By AlannaB490 |

Hendry was one of the most educational and informative wine tours that I visited in the Napa Valley - and I did 26 wineries total.

Appointments only. You must make a reservation.

We reserved the 10am tour and tasting with the owner Mr. Hendry himself. This was the best experience ever. As a scientist, he explained how the wine is made, why certain foods pair with certain wines the best, how to taste the wine, oaked vs. un-oaked, and so much more!

After learning about the Hendry family, the property and where the winery is today, we took an extensive tour of the property, tasted grapes, and ended with a sit-down tasting. The whole experience WILL last at least 3 hours.

I learned so much on this tour about wine and had a better understanding of wine. It is definitely a great winery to visit.

When you call to make a reservation, do not get discouraged about having to leave a voicemail. This is a family run winery and someone is always attentive to their guests on the property. I did leave a message of what date, how many people, and what tour/time I wanted to go. I got a call back fairly quickly and reserved with them on the phone.

Tip: Make Hendry your first winery experience while in Napa. We did, and it was the best decision that we made. I had a better experience and appreciation for all types of wine, even white wine which I usually don't care for, at other wineries. It opened my eyes to the varieties of wine that is available.

My wife and I learned a lot about wines

By Steve H |

We wanted to visit a winery that was unpretentious and this one was highly recommended. We did the morning seminar tour with George Hendry. It was great. He will take the time to answer all your questions. Walked us through the vineyard and the winery explaining each step along the way. It was very detailed and informative. We tasted 8 wines and he took the time to teach us about the different wines and pairing them with food. The icing on the cake was that they will apply your entrance fee towards buying the wines. A great experience!

Wine tour for geeks!

By Alice |

This was our second visit, so we are repeat visitors. We signed up for the 2-hour tour/seminar and tasting with George Hendry. Although there is a lot of walking and standing (a consideration for older guests), anyone interested in the chemistry, physics, and economics of a winery will love this tour. My 80-year old Dad, who is no connoisseur but loves science, was raving about the tour for days.

the intellectual winemaker

By DocJoey |

it is worth the 2 hours, even if you've been to dozens of wineries before. great variety of wines. both whites and reds and decently priced

Best tour and information in Napa

By MileHighJacket |

When you visit Hendry, you get the tour from George Hendry himself. The owner and winemaker. It is a great tour covering all aspects of winemaking and of why Hendry does what he does when making the wine. It is very in depth and technical, which was perfect for us. George is very personable and his wines are excellent. Definitely the highlight of our trip.

Unbelievable experience

By Mark C |

As a part of a three week west coast tour we had stopped off in Napa and had time to do one wine tour and tasting only.

I can honestly say this was one of the most interesting experiences we have all been on. Tamara was described by one couple on the tour as one of the best tour guides and most knowledgable they have ever had - even though this was our first tour, it’s hard to disagree. We all learnt so much and loved the wine tasting at the end

From the four of us who had come over from london - we learned so much and are currently enjoying our third bottle of Cabernet this evening...

Can not recommend this place enough.

Mark

By travelingcouple |

Jan was outstanding. Very intimate and educational. We enjoyed their wines and liked learning more about the winery and the history.

Superior

By Jen H |

George (the owner) is the man! By far the best and most informative tours I've ever been on! Everything from sampling the grapes fresh off the vine to table side tasting drills! Definitely my favorite vineyard and tour of the trip!

wine tour and tasting

I've been a wine club member at Hendry for years. Finally got to visit. We had a private tour and tasting with George Hendry himself. Not to be missed.

Hendry Ranch

By Brenda H |

Last week we spent a few days in Napa Valley. Our first stop was Hendry Ranch. It really is the best kept secret in Napa. Thanks George!

Great Place to Start

By Mpfertner |

Great tour for wine novices who want to learn more about the winemaking process and tasting tricks. The owner gives the tour and is very knowledgable and friendly. We even got to taste the grapes as he explained their mechanics. This is a great value (2.5 hour tour). The wines were good too!

Loved it

By Rob H |

My wife and I visited Hendry Ranch at the suggestion of our friends, and it was our highlight in Napa. We signed up for a morning tour, and ended up with a private tour with Mr. Hendry himself. He spent 2.5 hours taking us around his winery - and the time flew by. I could write pages about what I learned, but to keep it brief will just say that I was wowed by the quality of the tour and the quality of the wine. If you're looking for a non-pretentious winery to tour and support, this is the one.

Learn ins & outs of wine

By SaugaroJim |

This is a must stop for any winery tour. The owner, George, personally gave the tour and we learned about the "business" of wine making as well has the best wines and pairings. It was a 2 hour tour in a beautiful setting. Don't expect any fancy showroom or miles of barrels. It's pretty basic but then so is George.

Simply Incredible

By Lily H |

If you are interested in having a truly unique, informative, and special wine tasting experience, visiting Hendry is a must. I don't believe that Hendry is as touristy as other wineries in the area, and from this comes its charm. At Hendry, one is able to enjoy an intimate wine tasting experience and really learn about the wine-making process. If you schedule an appointment, you are taken on a free guided tour through the facilities and fields. Our host was so funny, friendly, and charming that we were in love with Hendry from the moment we pulled up. The tasting was free as well!--the Napa experience simply doesn't get better than Hendry. Thank you Apex Transportation for the recommendation; this place is a gem.

Favorite Wine Tour

By Heather D |

We just returned from Napa and visiting various wineries...the Hendry tour was by far the best. George provided us with fantastic tips and knowledge regarding the vineyards, wines, and food pairings. The tasting room was the highlight of the experience -taking home a number of bottles of their great wine.

No place better.

By DrDouglasRice |

If you want to learn about wine, take the tour at Hendry wines. You won't regret it. If you just want a quick, simple sip and go, search elsewhere. This is going to take time and energy, but it's worth it. I haven't had a tour, tasting, or event that's better.

We learned things like why the same wine can taste horrible to one person and delightful to another, how important the seeds are to the taste of red wine, and how food can impact wine taste and vice versa. If those are questions of yours, take the tour.

If those aren't your questions, write your own, (For example, what wine to pair with my favorite dishes, how recent vintages compare, and why two wines of the same varieties from the same vintner can be so different in price?) and go take the tour. Or don't write anything down, and jut take the tour, you'll still learn a ton.

I haven't found a better wine learning experience.

The tour leader, for most tours anyway, is George Hendry himself. He's is a engineer - very analytical and scientific. But he also has a charming, grandfatherly way. So even for those people that aren't interested in learning about the tannin producing phenols that make me love red wine, his passion for wine and his ability to teach people about it will win them over.

We had eleven tastes of darn good wine and a three hour education. It didn't cost us anything as the tour is comped if you buy an equivalent amount of wine, which we happily did.

If you want to learn about wine, this is the place. No place better.

By mrs_wright07 |

My husband and I went to several wineries and most of them were overcrowded and lacked personability. Many rushed you through your tasting with little info or patience for questions. But not this one! Hendry Ranch was very enjoyable and all the people there were down to earth and informative. The tour itself is worth the $20, not to mention the tasting! You will most definitely find a wine you enjoy whether you are an expert wine drinker or a novice. This was our first trip to Napa, but we will be back and our first stop will be Hendry.

We'll Be Back

By Yog-Sothoth |

We sampled the 2012 Zinfandel at the Redd Wood restaurant in Yountville, and stopped in at Hendry on our way back to San Francisco. It's tucked away on a back road, so you have to go looking for it. Although we had not booked a tour / tasting, they graciously accommodated our desire to slip in and buy a couple of bottle for Thanksgiving. If you like powerful red wines that induce deep dreams, Hendry is for you.

Very educational! A++++ Tour

By Meganlynne0218 |

Great Tour!
By far the most educational tour we have been on in napa!
Great staff! Great Wine A+++++

By SparkyChawee |

Very detailed. Gives a different vantage point for your next winery. Wish I had gone here first. The people are here for their passion it seems.

Great tour with George

By smbien1 |

As almost all have said, this is truly a unique Napa experience. We did lots of wineries and tastings over four days in Napa and enjoyed all of them while usually learning something new at each one. But, “visiting” with George on his three hour tour was such a great a experience we would highly recommend. The three hours flew by. Thanks George for sharing your farm, your knowledge of winemaking and the science of enjoying wine with food, and your tasty wines with us!

A long tour.

By SteakGuy75 |

Did the tour and tasting. Old guy running the tour is very nice and knowledgeable. Way too long. The actual wines are not very good considering they have been doing this for 40 years.

By haroldHood |

We learned a lot from this winery tour and tasting, however it kind of felt like taking a college course for credit. Very educational, not so much fun. A little too serious for our likIng, but the wine was good and I think they really know their stuff. We bought 6 bottles which we were able to checkin on the airline to go home.

Great experience!

By BethM920 |

we visited Hendry Ranch for the sit down tasting with Teresa. she is passionate and knowledgeable and engaging. what a great experience! the education was enlightening. the wines were fantastic. we are SOOO glad we found this winery.

while many wineries do not allow food, they were happy to have us bring food and enjoy it on their patio after our tasting with a bottle of their great wine!

I highly recommend the tasting experience and the wines!

Hendry Seminar Tour - WORTH EVERY PENNY

By Mary Kate D |

George Hendry is an awesome guy! And we LOVED his seminar tour. A quick overview: George walks you out into his winery, through his production facility, and then guides your tasting. He knowledge is vast, owning a winery is a second job (hes a physicist) and he talks as a kind of stream of consciousness. He shared so much knowledge and it wasn't just a pitch to buy his wines or why his wines were great (which they are). He dove into wines, tasting, and dining.

The wines themselves are great and he makes a few varieties that you can't really find anywhere else in the valley.

Best part: Your $75pp seminar fee applies to wine purchases. So why wouldn't you do this tour and then walk out with all the delicious wines you loved?!

I honestly wish I could buy a "George's Guide to Wine and Food Pairing" as I didn't take enough notes during our tasting experience.

Highly recommend this unique experience!

By thtrebuf |

We took the tour/seminar at the Hendry vineyard and it was hands down our favorite morning in Napa! The wines were good, Mr. Hendry was knowledgeable and I learned SO much about wine making and wine tasting. It was the most thorough and fun wine tasting I have ever done in my life. Do it!!!

Hendry Ranch -- Great Education and Wine!

By coastalgardener |

My husband and I were part of a group of 10 who toured the vinyard and winery with the owner himself, George Hendry. He talked extensively about the process of wine making from how to produce the best grapes to bottling the finished product -- and everything inbetween! We even had an opportunity to see wine being bottled mechanically.

After the tour we all sat around a large table and were served wine after wine by Mr. Hendry. During the tasting he gave us an indepth education about how to pair wine with food and comparing different vintages of the same wines -- FASCINATING!

Hendry Ranch wines are excellent! You need to allow 2-1/2 hours but it is time well spent. The best wine education I have ever had. We joined the club so we could continue to enjoy the wines at home.

Fabulous Wine Tasting

By Sarah M |

We were visiting Sonoma for a few days, and decided to visit Hendry Vineyards in Napa. This was a fantastic decision. We went just for the tasting, but you can also do a vineyard tour. It is by appointment, and they were extremely accommodating. This was one of the most informative and interesting tastings. There was tremendous detail about how to taste wine and how to pair wines with food. Highly recommended!

By Mrs T |

Super informative and interesting! Learned a ton and not boring at all! Was recommended to me and I will recommend to everyone else.

Top wines!

By McLeodofPoolewe |

An excellent family vineyard in Napa. I work as a wine professional in Europe and this vineyard was recommended to me for a visit. It didn't disappoint - although known for its Zinfandels, there was a wide range, including an unusual Albarinho, and all wines were top notch: beautifully crafted, balanced and elegant. My only disappointment is not being able to buy them where I live. A real family operation, and a very interesting visit. Highly recommend.

Excellent wine knowledge (by scientists)

By Traveltype31 |

After reading the many reviews here (supposedly all written by Jeff himself) decided to go to Hendry Ranch wines for an exclusive tour. Called in the day in advance and got a reservation at 10 am the next day. After a thorough explanation of wine, the dirt, and the grapes and a nice look in the small factory we got to taste about 8 wines with a proper explanation with it.
Very friendly people in a non-commercial setting, only two tours a day keeps it nice and cosy. If you come back between august and september you'll also see some more action, in June the factory has it's "quiet growing time". If you decide to buy a bottle (from 18-55 us $) the 20$ tourfee will be waived.

If you like wine, you have to come here

By xfan |

George Hendry gives the most amazing tours. If you want to learn about wine, this is the place. By the way, their wines are excellent. Allow plenty of time-they don't rush you through to get ready for the next group. best tour ever.

Educational tour and wine tasting experience with the owner/winemaker

By JLTfromDallas |

Forty year old family winery located about 15 minutes west of the town of Napa. The seventy-dollar tour (offset against wine purchases) is provided by unassuming, charming, and very knowledgeable owner and winemaker, George Hendry. Over three hours or so, G. Hendry provides his guests with extensive, intimate and grounded details on the recent history, the science and the economics of the vineyards and of winemaking. While walking the vineyards, visiting the "chai" and eventually tasting the Hendry wines, one can learn casually or be provided with very technical answers: it all depends on the guests' appetite for learning specific details on any aspect of the process. Great tour for an almost complete overview of the wine growing and wine making process, with a focus on science rather than folklore. And G. Hendry continuously adds a very personal touch making it a delightful learning experience. Highly recommended. Dedicate three hours .

Amazing tour

By J H |

We do not like wine but while we were in California we wanted to learn more about the wineries and how wine is made. This tour plus the wine-tasting following the tour provided us with so much information. George is an amazing person and his tour was awesome; he was willing to answer all questions asked. We even enjoyed the wine tasting; it provided us with quite an education, too!

Great place to start your Napa Vacation

By Maksim K |

If you are new to wine tasting and to Napa this is a great first stop. You will find out a lot about wine making, wine tasting, taste a few decent wines and have a some laughs in the process.

Terrific in-depth info on being a wine maker

By travel-lms |

Great tour, with lots of tidbits and information on what matters if you own a vineyard and make your own wine.

And the tasting was very informative too. A great tour if you like to learn about the vines, the soil, and the business of wine.

Great Experience - Informative, Personal, and Delicious!

By J Y |

Hendry Ranch is a gem in Napa. We went on many wine tours, and this one was by far the best. Not only were the wines the best, but the information was the kind that you just don't get with the larger scale "tasting mills". George is a very seasoned veteran of the wine making industry, understands the history of the Valley, and explains the wine making process in a scientific, yet approachable way. His explanations are simple, yet informative and he has a masterful understanding of wine.

Another plus is that the price of the tasting tour is refunded if you buy an equivalent amount of wine per person. It's not overpriced for the quality and you get an experience that no other winery will give you. If you go to Napa, this tour should be #1 on your list.

Very informative

By psych1014 |

I learned more about wine during this tasting than I ever expected to in my life. It was really cool to learn why certain wines go with certain foods and how they actually make the food taste better. The wines were excellent and the package you can buy to bring wine home as a carry one worked perfectly. I would highly recommend this tasting to anyone who does not know a lot about wine. I'm not a big wine drinker, but after this tasting I definitely will be drinking a lot more of it!

Best Wine of Our Trip

By Jan W |

We wanted to join the morning tour with Mr. Hendry, but couldn't arrange our schedule. We booked the afternoon tour and spent a couple of hours with Megan. She was a magnificent host and we learned so much. The best part was the wine. I so wish we could join their wine club, but alas...Mississippi says "NO!" Solution? Back to Napa and Hendry Ranch for another vacation as soon as possible. Cheers!!

Great wines in a rustic setting

By Mike K |

When I called to make a reservation for the 11am 8 person tasting, it was filled but Tamara said she could arrange a 1pm tasting for the 4 of us. We got there early and had a picnic lunch on the porch surrounded by vinyards blooming with yellow mustard. At 1 Tamara ushered us in to a private room where we could see the vineyards and mustard out of the windows. She was very knowledgeable and interesting and told us all about the history of the place. George Hendry is an 80 year old nuclear engineer who became a farmer and a winemaker and has lived in the house on the property since he was 2 years old. He still leads the 2pm tour and tasting. Anyway the wines were excellent - my favorite was a big, fruity Lot 7 & 22 zinfandel - and Tamara was great.

Like the "Good Eats" of wine tours

By secarte2 |

The fact that George Hendry and his partner produce cyclotrons and are engineers/scientists really explains a lot about the tours held at Hendry. If you like Good Eats and hearing Alton Brown explain the science behind the food we cook and eat, you'll enjoy a tour at Hendry. Jan was our guide, along with Gracie the dog (yay dogs), and she walked us around several different vineyard fields, through the wine-making facility, and into the tasting room where we even tasted our bitter receptors on our tongues at one point. We learned all about bricks and lees and all kinds of words I never knew before our trip. My only regret is that we didn't come here first so that I would have known what I was looking for on the rest of the visits! The wine was good and we took a few bottles home; would have joined the club except our state won't allow direct shipping. Really great experience! Wear comfortable shoes you can walk in, and book early!

Entertaining and informative

By MsDeb50 |

This was our first winery in Napa and that was a very good choice. We learned a lot and had a good time doing it. We made a reservation a week earlier on the recommendation of a friend who is a frequent visitor to the area. The winery is owned and run by engineers and does things a little differently. The resulting wines are very good. The tour and tasting was 2 1/2 hours and well worth it. Our guide, Jeff, was humorous and knowledgeable. We ordered wine and are looking forward to enjoying it now that we are back home in Ohio.

Best Tour Ever

By Anne K |

My husband and I took the 10 am tour with George and it was informative, funny, relaxing, and delicious! The grounds are beautiful and peaceful. George answered all of our questions and taught us so much about food and wine pairings. The cost of the tasting was applied towards purchases. The prices per bottle ranged from $24-$65. It was different/better than any of the other places we visited!

Great opportunity to learn and taste!

By TWayneMiller |

My wife and I read about this place on Trip Advisor. We were fortunate enough to get a tour the day we called due to a cancellation.

We learned so much about the agricultural processes and the fermentation processes involved in wine making.

We are novice wine tasters but we learned SO MUCH during our tour and taste.

I would highly recommend this for those just learning about wine. I think it would be well worth the tour for those who already know much about wine too.

I would definitely take a repeat of this experience if I am back in Napa in the future.

Fantastic tasting and education

By Emalee G |

We loved the tasting here and the education. The wines are great and I would highly recommend this winery. Make sure to make a reservation in advance. It was such a charming experience.

Lovely Vineyard - Truly Exceptional!

By Dylan H |

So full disclosure, we really weren't the biggest fans of Napa. Most of the wineries we went to were either too overpriced, snobby, corporate or all of the above. Hendry, was one of the few exceptions. After sharing our experience with another couple we met in the area, they told us we had to come here and it absolutely did not disappoint. We absolutely adored our tasting here. One of the few family owned wineries in the area, it showed in both their warmth as hosts and in the quality of their wines. We loved everything about this place (and their wine). In addition, the scenery is truly stunning! I cannot recommend this vineyard enough. A true gem in Napa Valley!

Great education from George

By WilmaIllinois |

We made this our first stop as it's voted #1 in Tripadvisor. George hosted the tour and the wine taste. George is great teacher to show us how humble but fulfilling the life they live, amidst great wine and open valley. Hendry is nice, quiet, unassuming, and understated. A little gem just down the road from the south end of Napa. We had a total of 3 hours with George and generous serving of 10 different wines sitting down in a long wood table. We did not have to stand up to the bar where there is a barrier between me and my wine guru. Definitely a highlight in the Napa/Sonoma visit.

Disappointing Tour in Napa, and the Price Suddenly Doubles

By GuyFromAtlanta_GA |

We made a reservation to tour the Hendry Ranch Winery based solely on the glowing reviews here at TripAdvisor. I must say this was the first time we were steered wrong. The tour and tasting was conducted by George. Although he is obviously an expert in the field, his presentation was slow, uninspired and downright boring. We did little touring of the facility and spent most of the time standing in the sun or beside barrels. Wine tasting is usually a festive and social event, but here it is like a lecture in chemistry class. Furthermore, in an email confirmation sent to me, this winery stated that the "tasting and tour fee is $20 per person" and that the fee is waived with an equivalent purchase. After the tasting, the fee suddenly doubled to $80 in equivalent purchases for the two of us. I told them about the email, but they were firm about coming up with $80 so we bought more wine than we wanted. We toured and tasted at wineries all over Napa, Sonoma and Anderson Valley. Hendry Ranch was the worst. Try any of the others before this one.

Informative and fun tour

By Eorchant |

We recently enjoyed a tour and tasting at the Hendry Ranch. We were given lots of good info on wine-making and tasting. You can use the tour fee toward wine purchase at the end of the tour, which we were happy to do.
A great way to spend the afternoon.

Great Experience

By BassHunter57 |

Perfect for novices and experts alike. The owner gives the tour. Do not take this tour if you will be bored by learning the science and wine making and how wine affects your sense of taste. But if you want to learn the basics of pairing wine and food, and the science behind it, this is a good experience.

Must-do / not your average 'tasting room'

By Keith M |

Hendry operates by reservation only, but the commitment is well worth it. We visited in late October and god a personalized/guided tour of the vineyards, production room, and cellar. At each stage, we had plenty of time to ask questions and really get a feeling for the chemistry behind wine making. The last half of your day at Hendry will be a comparative tasting that explains wine to your own taste beyond just a label or grape. Highly recommended whether you are in Napa for a day or a week, it was one of the most memorable visits of our trip.

Must visit boutique winery

By Joey M |

Must visit boutique winery in Napa. The barrel fermented Chardonnay and the Cabernet Sauvignon are very good and not ridiculously expensive. The views from the top of the hill show off the huge beautiful view. They also have some older vines that make the estate wines taste amazing.

Worth the trip!

By laurenmc82 |

Very informative tour, excellent tasting, friendly staff. George is the man! Not the place to go if one is looking for a quick tasting.

Wine Tour & Tasting

By Peter G |

We just finished a tour and tasting. When the winery owner quietly and humbly clears your tasting glasses you know you are at the real deal.
We had an amazing and educational experience. The facility was great, the tour was amazing, and wine tasting was wonderful. Thank you George and crew for a great Napa experience!

Engineer's Delight

By GaryFred |

First time to Hendry. Tasting with several couples and Jeff The Engineer was knowledgeable and enjoyable. Hendry has a broad lineup of wines, and given the size of the tasting crowd, they weren't as flexible with opening/tasting other wines that the group requested as some other spots are, but was still tremendously enjoyable.

Go here!!

By Bill A |

Stop. Do not go to another winery in Napa before going to Hendry. Period. We toured 7 on our trip. Hands down the best was Hendry.

Very Welcoming

By Jennifer C |

Definitely my favorite tour! We did the 3 hour tour with Mr. Hendry, loved it. All the employees were friendly and welcoming. Plus, we learned a lot about tasting, and the science behind it. A must do.

Novice and Intermediate Wine Drinkers Must Go Here First

By Tom W |

If you are a new or intermediate wine drinker, you must come here first in Napa. The small intimate wine tasting will empower you with so much knowledge in understanding wine and how to drink it. Jeff was fantastic at breaking down the art of wine for us. Many of my friends who have been to Napa a few times agree that this place offered the best small intimate tasting setting with the best value for the knowledge imparted on you. Few other wine tastings will give you as much knowledge as this place.

On top of that, their pricing is incredibly reasonable. $30 tasting, but purchase a $30+ wine bottle and it's waived. How can you say no to buying their wine?

Also, they have picnic tables and a nice hill you can go bring a picnic lunch to. They were accommodating for our picnic needs and even gave us a pitcher of water as we ate our own lunch outside their doors.

Make an appointment before you go as they get very busy.

Excellent Tour and Tasting

By Carol P |

My husband and I visited The Hendry Winery in May of 2019. We visited many wineries during our stay, but since this was our first time here in Napa, I wanted to take an educational winery tour. I did some research and Hendry always seems to be one of the best rated tours. I wanted to do the 3-hour tour with George Hendry, but my husband didn’t want to spend so much time at one winery, so we opted for the afternoon tour that is 2 hours in length. I read reviews about the tour and Meghan always received great reviews. I was hoping that she would be leading our tour that day and she was! The previous reviewers were right, she was a very knowledgeable guide and a lovely host. We were also fortunate that the other people on our tour were very nice. After leading us through the vineyards and explaining the process of growing different grapes we took a tour of the winery itself. What I really liked about Hendry is that everything was so down to earth and unpretentious. We especially loved their dog Honey. She accompanied us on our tour and sat with us during our tastings. The wines were very good and Meghan was very generous with the number of tastings and pours. Another nice benefit at Hendry is the tour fee is waived when you make an equivalent purchase. We have three bottles from Hendry here at home and when we open them, it will bring back memories of our visit.

Do not pass up the Hendry Winery Tour

By Kim B |

If you only take one winery tour in Napa, California, take this one. Rich history, knowledgeable and friendly staff, interesting and detailed information about the wine making process, and a wonderful tasting at the end.

Go for the Zin, stay for the stories

By Brian W |

Great wine tasting! We were led through a flight of very nice wines, while we learned about wine, grapes, prunes, walnuts, and history. When we left, we couldn't believe two hours has passed.

By Bbg8er |

Mr Hendry gave us an excellent group tour of the vineyard and winery. It was a great educational experience on a beautiful piece of land. We tasted 10 different wines which were described thoroughly to match different foods. Mr Hendry was very knowledgeable about every aspect of the business.

Excellent experience

By Jon V |

This was our third and best tour this week! Terese explained all of the wine making process, and then walked us through the tasting to help us understand the difference between the varietals and the interaction between wines and foods. She answered all questions completely. No pressure to buy a lot of wine either! Trust me, get off the highway and check out this winery! The owner, George Hendry, even does the 10 am tours himself!

A unique experience

By kib45 |

Me and my friends met with Mike Hendry, who gave us a fantastic tour at the wineyard. Wonderfull wine - the best we had during our stay in California. Fortunately we can by the Hendry wines in Denmark.,

I love wine

By Eric B |

Great Tour. George was great and we had a wonderful tour and drank more wine than one should. That is what is expected of a wine tour and it was met.

An Intimate Wine Experience

By Aalok P |

I knew this was a solid winery when I tried their 2012 BF Chardonnay 1-2 years ago, but it wasn't until my tour yesterday that I learned how amazing the people behind this organization are as well!

2-3 hour tour but you would hardly notice it given how intimate and engaging the experience was with George. In an area that is becoming more touristy each year with tours and tastings that err more on the transactional side, my time at Hendry Ranch was a refreshing change of pace. Reminded me more of the experiences I get with Sonoma wineries (if that makes sense).

George takes you through the ins and outs of winemaking, the mistakes he's made along the way, the lessons he's learned, etc. He also encourages you to ask any and all questions which is quite nice, no question is a silly or stupid one and he's eager to teach people.

The tasting itself is a great experience as well! You taste 8-9 different wines but there is no focus on getting you buzzed/drunk so you will want to buy more of their wine at the end. Instead you take a few sips of each in different orders to learn more about your individual palate (vs. the group's).

For people that are new to wine and are eager to learn more in a stress/pretentious-free environment, I would highly recommend doing the full tour w/ George. And for those that are more knowledgable, I think you'll really appreciate all of the above given that it's becoming harder and harder to find experiences like this in Napa.

Informative tour and great wine.

By Flash65 |

We attended the 'owners' tour and had a great time walking through the vineyards and facilities with the owner. Afterward enjoyed an informative tasting where we learned about wine and why the proper wine-food pairings make meals so much better. We were happy to purchase wine for shipment home. Coming from rural/farming backgrounds ourselves, we really enjoyed that this was a local family farm operation.

Peaceful tasting

By Tina A |

We had a great time is our host, T! We had a nice relaxed tasting and a private table on a beautiful sunny day. We learned a lot about the history of the winery and she explained in great detail about all the wines we were offered and sampled. We had a wonderful time and signed up for their six bottle wine club. We also took three bottles with us to go. Highly recommended if you are in the area. Please support this family business!

Awesome Seminar Tour

By Nick Z |

The seminar tour with Mr. Hendry was our favorite of our trip. I highly recommend doing this first of all your winery visits as it is so interesting and informative. Also, the tour fees can be used to purchase bottles so that's a nice perk.

We loved this

By reel_time33 |

Make sure this is your first stop of the trip, especially if you are a wine novice like me. We loved the tour, the tasting included 10 wines and full descriptions of what we would taste and why. George Hendry was an incredible and knowledgeable guide. This 2.5 hour trip made our 2-day Napa vacation totally amazing. It got us off on a good wine start. The nice bonus was when you buy wine, they wave the tasting fee. I am not sure what more he could have done to make it a more interesting and fun trip, and the wines were delicious.

Great for wine novices

By ppeebles |

This is a 2.5 hours wine education class. Our teacher was the owner himself, George Hendry.
Mr. Hendry teaches the class as a "wine professor." The Berkley educated teacher is amazing in his chemical explanation of why grapes become wine.
Be prepared to take a serious approach to wine making. Mr. Hendry is serious and doesn't joke around with amateurs.
Be prepared....If you just want a wine tasting experience...the one that you can taste 3 wines and laugh and joke with the pourer...this is not it!
You will taste 10-11 different Hendry wines and get great explanations on food pairings.
The biggest benefit and the material advantage to this class is that the $40 class fee can be applied to a Hendry wine order. That was fantastic.
Thoroughly recommend this activity.

All around, best winery experience we had in Napa.

By steve h |

It's difficult to put into words the feeling of knowledge you get when touring the estate with Jeff. We visited the Ranch on a nearly perfect day in early March, and were taken back by the education and warm welcome we received. It's very clear that Hendry is driven by passion. When you find out that two of the individuals that play a large role in the operations of the Ranch build Cyclotrons (Particle Accelerators) as a day job - the ultimate fusion of old world traditions and new world engineering is exposed. I won't ruin the tour for anyone, but they did two things that we didn't experience any other place. The tasting at the end of the tour included all wines they had available (we tasted 11 wines), and they used olive oil to simulate "Fat" in a steak and showed the group how they heavier Cabernet Sauvignon changed after you ate a cracker with olive oil on it. It was truly an eye-opening experience for our table. Joined their wine club, not because of the amazing tour or the fantastic people...but because they had the best tasting Cab Sauv and Red Bordeaux Blend we had the pleasure of trying. Don't miss it.

Perfect

By Elizabeth3418 |

I agree with the others who have said if you can only go to one winery this is the one to see. We spent over 3 hours there and worth every minute.

Good wine, decent presentation, okay experience

By GlobalExec |

What started as a most enjoyable day, ended with a "high pressured" sale of wine based on an upcharge of our tasting experience. Surprisingly charged us 150% of CONFIRMED price and forced to buy additional bottles to make up the difference (although we had email evidence of the lower price offer). In any case, the wine was good, the tasting session informative, and the weather was perfect for our first visit to this winery.

Absolutely AMAZING!!!!!!

By Addie D |

If we could give this 10 stars we would!! We opted for the tour given by George and OMG it was fabulous!!! Worth every dollar and they even waive the tasting fee if you buy the equivalent in wine so it’s even more awesome!
Not sure I can put in to words how great the tour and knowledge we learned from George was... I sure wish I learned this 15 years ago!! Sure you can do classes on pairing wine but George actually tells you WHY it is that way and has you taste in such a way so you can actually taste what he’s talking about! I by no means am a science or technical person but I was blown away! So much of what he said was “aha” moments in regards to why you feel or taste something after eating food or drinking wine.
George is a wealth of knowledge and was by far the best tour and experience we had in the 9 wineries we visited!
Yes it’s $75 but do it, you won’t be disappointed!! Plus as I said, if you buy wine the tasting doesn’t cost anything! I mean really?!?! How awesome is that???!
The tour with George is one not to be missed. It was the hidden gem in our 3 day adventure!

Thanks George and Hendry for a great experience, the knowledge we now have will help us for years to come!!

Nice tour and tasting

By Illini1222 |

My husband and I recently visited Hendry Ranch. We were very impressed with the informative tour provided by the owner of the winery. The tasting was also very organized and educational. We would definitely return.

Overpriced visit/tasting

By Alexandre P |

We visited this winery and were disappointed by the quality and content of the visit.

The wine tasting is really overpriced regarding the quality of some wines (especially pinot gris and chardonnay non oaked)

We also did not appreciate the push to buy such overpriced wines.

Don t loose time and money there.

Remote place with odd wines

By kurtinge |

This is worth a detour for a visit. If you want to taste other wines than Cab and Chard this is the place.

Worth the time

By tanyawilson27 |

So informative and interesting - enjoyed every minute and learned so much!

Seminar with George-an absolute must!

By JimRiesterer |

If you do nothing else in Napa-you MUST visit here and plan ahead and get signed up for the 3-hour wine tour/tasting/seminar hosted by 82-year old George Hendry. It’s offered daily at 10 am and there are only 8 spots. Cost is $75 but it’s 99% likely you will buy wine at the end of this amazing experience so if you buy $75 or more in wine it ends up being FREE. (I ended up buying a mixed case).

So why is this a MUST? George has been in the “farming” biz for 80 years and is also a brilliant scientist/engineer who has a gift for demystifying the world of wines. Whether you are a novice or someone like me who has visited wineries across the globe, this is an unforgettable and informative session that will totally up your appreciation and understanding of wine, food pairings and the science of taste. George is like the patient professor that you had that finally explained something in a way that turned on the lightbulb for you in college. His discussions and taste experiences really highlight a number of important principles.

So, don’t wAit- give them a call and get one of these scarce spots. You will be very glad you did.

Excellent tour and outstanding wines

By Donna S |

I had the privilege of tasting Hendry wines in the past. While I was in Napa I had to visit the winery. It did not disappoint. Teresa did a great job showing us the winery and explaining the approach for winemaking at Hendry. The unique grapes that are grown provide a different wine tour than you find at the hundreds of other wineries. Their Cabernet is outstanding. The Albarino and primitvo are unique and yummy wines to be able to try. I liked them so much I joined a wine club. You will not be disappointed in visiting Hendry winery

#1 for good reason!

By BN712 |

There's a reason (many reasons, actually) why Hendry is #1 on Trip Advisor! Our tour and tasting were excellent. A relaxed setting, beautiful scenery, thoroughly informative tour, and excellent wines. Jeff, our tour guide, was very knowledgable and comedic, so the tour was both informative and entertaining. He explained some of the quality control measures they use in the wine making process, and it's evident when you taste the wines. They are delicious, and the price point is very reasonable for such a high-quality product. I would definitely recommend visiting Hendry! The tour and tasting fee is waived with a purchase, which I think is a plus.

Very knowledgable and friendly

By Phillip F |

George the owner spent a lot of time explaining what his winery did and why things tasted the way the did including some tasting drills. It was long, but very informative and highly recomended for anyone new to wine tasting. Super nice and friendly people, and the vinyard is beautiful.

Great experience!!

By Alvaro C |

Loved every minute of our visit. A true and honest desire to make you learn about wine and not sell you bottles.
A place to recommend if you are looking for a nice experience out from regular commercial tastings in Napa

Great Tour and Great Wine!

By ChrisC1985 |

2 hour tour of winery and vineyard was very educational, including pairing wine with food. Very good wines with several different reds and whites. Liked the Zinfandel the best. Joined their wine club, recommend this tour for anyone who loves wine!

SUPERB Tour & Tasting

By LESLIE M |

I loved how well Mr. Hendry explained the whole process of making wines. He made the tour very instructional and easy for a novice to follow. The tasting that followed was equally instructional and enlightening. I have a much better understanding of wines in general, and feel much more confident in picking out wines now than I have ever been.

GREAT TOUR!!!!!

By jay c |

Jeff was fantastic. Despite warnings we did not find his "engineering" focused approach beyond the grasp of most non-engineers. My wife found it very informative and she leans way more towards the Martha Stewart domain! I found him to be very candid and open in his comments and was especially interested in numerous insights into the financial aspects of the business - after all, if wineries don't make $$$, we will all be drinking grape juice! Just a great way to spend 2 1/2 relaxing, informative hours. Thank goodness George, (owner) didn't allow Jeff to name the tour or it might have been "Jeff and Jan's Jiffy Junkets" . WHEW!!! Jeff, you just make sure those durn labels go on straight!

If you can visit one winery, visit Hendry.

By the_travel_c0uple |

We took the tour in late June during a visit to CA to celebrate our 25th anniversary. We saw many positive reviews about Hendry and decided to go to this vineyard/winery for our trip because we were going to be in the Napa area for only one day. The visit did not disappoint. Mr. Hendry showed us around the ranch and told us about the different grapes and why they were grown in certain areas of the property. We then went through the building where the wine was made and stored, and learned a great deal about the wine making process. We then returned to the main building for tasting and learned what Hendry wines go best with different food.

A wine lover's must-visit

By Steve K |

It's worth the trek out to Hendry for their winery tour, but be ready to spend a GOOD chunk of your day here. For those who may only have a few days in the area or who are on their first visit to Napa, I don't recommend it, since you won't get to sample as many wineries as you might have otherwise. Maybe for the NEXT time you're in Napa...

We were fortunate enough to have George, the owner and winemaker, leading our $20pp, 2.5 hour tour and the in-depth tasting session. If you ever wanted to talk about the details of winemaking, talk to George Hendry. He's happy to oblige, and his passion for wine and wine/ food pairings shows.

Informative, friendly folks, and a tour that any wine lover should take

Wonderful Way to start Weekend of Wine Tasting

By paigerenee2016 |

This was awesome!! I highly encourage a trip to this winery. Wine tasting is explained to you on a molecular level. After extensive research (I just can’t help myself), my husband and I decided to start with the most scientific winery tour and tasting, then ease into the most romantic (Stags’ Leap). It is the best of both worlds! Hendry winery is an incredible way to begin your wine tasting trip. Now, I know why wine tastes soooo goooood. Seriously, this is a must for a Napa trip. Go to the morning seminar, it is longer, and so worth it. You have to make reservations. It is well worth it!!

Zin master!

By Maxine B |

Great zinfandels, fantastic tasting room. Can be a bit hard to find, but worth the effort. Be sure to try the block designates.

A wonderful boutique winery

By Beth D |

I have never been on a wine tasting tour of a vineyard, so I wanted to find a winery that was small so that the tour wouldn't be overwhelming and I could really learn something. We met in the wine tasting rooms and were greeted by our tour guide. She told us what we'd be doing, then we went out into the into the vineyard. We learned about all the varieties, the processes of grape growing A healthy environment can impact the harvest. We then went in to see how the grapes are processed and then a fully explained tasting with lots of comparisons. Make sure this one's on your list of tours!

Great Tour and Tasting

By Emilio P |

Our 2hour tour/tasting; the ranch is beautiful. Clean and the staff demonstrates a genuine care for their work and the visitors. The cost of the tour is offset when making a wine purchase. Lots of award winning wines. A great variety. We are wine rookies but we certainly are glad that our first ever Napa valley wine tasting was at the Hendry Ranch Winery. It was worth every penny and there was NOTHING to dislike!

The staff is extremely helpful and demonstrate a great sense of professionalism and knowledge of their craft.

George Hendry - legend!

By lynneewilliams |

Very informative tour and tasting, no pressure to buy - George shared his knowledge with us and we learned a lot.

Fab tour

By Claint5 |

George Hendry has been in the business for years and he knows his stuff. We did a very intimate tour with 8 of us. He showed us around the winery and how the wine is produced before we headed to the tasting room. We sampled 8 wines, learning about how to taste, how to change the taste and how to pair each of them.
The tasting fee is waived if you purchase wine.

Very Interesting and Tasty!

By LovetheSnow31 |

We really enjoyed the seminar and tasting with George. It was a small group and it was a rare experience to have the owner give you the history of the ranch and winery as well as the technical side to winemaking and food and wine pairing. The tasting takes on a more serious tone than others we have been to as George leads the tasting in a structured classroom type format as he has really wants you to learn some things. The science behind it all is amazing. And the wines are delicious and reasonable priced for the qualtiy in Napa Valley. We joined the wine club!

WONDERFUL tour and wines!

By arauth |

This was the one tour we chose to take in Napa. There was only one other person with us on the tour. The tour was great, very interesting. We appreciated his no-nonsense approach. The tasting was sit-down and very enjoyable. It was the only place I didn't have one wine I didn't like. At the end of the trip, I wished I had bought more there! And they waive the fees with a wine purchase. What GREAT customer service! Other wineries in Napa could learn a lot from Hendry's friendly staff.

My favorite tour!

By meval13 |

This was my second time doing the seminar with Mr. Hendry since I wanted to bring my friends who are new to wine appreciation. Mr. Hendry's seminar is very educational! Since he's a neurophysiologist, he can explain winemaking & tasting in a very scientific way, but also in a way that lay people can understand & appreciate. The wines are excellent, we tasted about 8 of them. I especially enjoyed the reds. And it's great that they apply the price of the seminar towards your wine purchase. Highly, highly recommend this!!! My favorite tour in Napa!

Hit This One Up First

By Julie W |

Great first stop in Napa. Out of six wineries, this one was by far the most educational. You have a nice intimate seating and a really comprehensive breakdown of how to taste a wine. It helped us make the most of every winery we visited thereafter.
Also, the award-winning wines were just superb. This should definitely be on your list.

Fantastic educational tour and tasting

By kristy b |

I read reviews on Trip Advisor prior to our visit and made advance reservations to visit Hendry. Mr. Hendry gave us a comprehensive tour of the grounds and facilities, followed by a spectacular tasting experience. We learned so much about pairing food and wine and how to better evaluate wines. We purchased three bottles to take home as well. My parents who joined us on our tour, said this was the best tour they have had in all their trips to Napa Valley. I highly recommend this winery. Great staff- very helpful.

Blown off by Hendry

By Brittany C |

We called and made a reservation for today Saturday the 28th 2017 for a 2:30 premier tasting in advance and reserved with a credit card. We called 15 minutes prior to our reservation to state we would be 5 min late to our tasting. No and answered the phone, we left a nice voicemail. We showed up at the house next door which our maps directed us to as the Hendry winery. A very kind Spanish man directed us to how to get to the tasting room, when we arrived there were two cars parked out front a Range Rover and one other vehicle. We knew there were people there. The door already had a closed sign on the door. We called multiple times, knocked on the door many times, left more messages. And those inside "hid from us"...message sent. Rude. We came all the way from Colorado and only had reservations for two wineries today. Hess welcomed us warmly and we're very professional and kind..and delicious wines I may add. Our celar section with Hendry wines will be replaced. It's all about the attitude. For a small boutique winery this is not to be expected. Even Truchard will send you a kind email in reply. We will tell all of our wine loving friends to never go to Hendry. Very disappointing and unwelcoming. Guess they did not appreciate our orders and support over the years! Ciao Hendry!

Our first intro to Napa

By rar177 |

George is very knowledgeable and it was a very interesting discussion rather than tour, about wines in Napa and also further afield. George allows the conversation to develop rather than following a set format which makes each tour your very own.

Best Wine Tour and Tasting ever

By SocialTravellerBT |

This was the best tour for us. We were a group of 5 and George Hendry accommdated us inspite of having just 4 seats left. The tour was perfect. it started with touring the vineyards, then touring the winery and then ended with tasting 10 wines. George Hendry is very passionate about this business, unlike the commercial wineries, and gave a detailed education of the wine making process. And, it was super interesting. I think this is a must do when you visit Napa. The $25 fee is covered if you get a bottle of wine.

The only winery tour you must take...ever!

By joemooch |

You can keep reading more reviews about the great experience at Hendry...or just schedule the tour to see for yourself. After George's tour one only needs to do tastings at the other wineries...and learn to ignore the host blather about how any wine supposedly tastes and smells.

Great winery experience!

By Dick D |

A tour of the Hendry winery was a most informative experience for us. Jeff gave us a lot of information and we had a great, and informative, tasting. At 2+ hours it was clear that they care about what you learn. On top of this they have great wine. If you are tempted to go to go to Sinsky, go here instead. The best part: the cost of the tour can be offset by an equivalent purchase of wine.

Wine tasting and Vineyard visit

By RYam603 |

One the the owners, George Hendry, conducted our recent visit. It was so informative and interesting. Learned about the different grapes and even pairings. Really enjoyed!

Best Vineyard in the United States, EVER.

By kwokmun |

If you have one day in Napa Valley and you want to learn everything about wine, you only need to consider one place among all the vineyards: Hendry Vineyard and Winery. It is truly the best $20 and three hours you will ever spend in your trip.

I made a reservation a week before the actual date and I was really lucky it was a beautiful sunny day. The group was small and intimate, about 10 people or so and it was led by one of the co-owners. I thought three hours was a bit long but trust me, she was so knowledgeable and interesting, I couldn't get enough of it!

We went to see where the grapes were grown and had a crash course about viticulture, everything from how they were grown, fermentation, bottling and every scientific detail you can imagine. I have an engineering background and I really appreciate everything she talked about. But even if you're not into the details of wine making, there's still something to learn from her.

After 1.5 hours of the tour, we proceeded to the hall for wine tasting. We tasted all the wines they produce in their property, all 11-12 of them. Now that's impressive! Again, this was an eye opener. We tasted and sometimes re-tasted some wines to compare the subtle differences. I have to say, nobody does wine tasting like Hendry because I learnt so much about wines here than anywhere else. Even till today, I share what I learnt from Hendry in my parties.

What can I say, drive to Hendry and experience the best wine making and tasting experience in Napa Valley. Again, it was the best $20 and 3 hours I've ever spent in my trip. I went home with 3 bottles because they will waive the tour fee if each person buys a bottle.

Wine seminar - highlight of our trip

By jmgrier |

We were so lucky to spend a morning with George, the winemaker himself! We got a wonderful tour of the vineyard and winery on a beautiful morning, followed by a thorough tasting of 8 wines, with so much information regarding wine pairing with food. We look forward to building our wine knowledge after this excellent foundation. Thank you so much for the experience.

By far the best winery for tastings and tours

By VSattui1232 |

The was the absolutely the best wine tasting I've ever been to in over 23 years of going to Napa Valley. Our tasting was conducted around a table in a small conference room. The owner of the winery, George Hendry gave us a real wine education which lasted for well over 90 minutes. We sampled 10 different wines. George explained how your taste buds change when you drink wine and how food changes the taste of wine. I was practically impressed by the experiment with crackers and olive oil. Since I am adverse to tannins I can not stand the smell and/or taste of any red wine. By eating a cracker doused in olive oil I was then able to drink red wine and not be repulsed by it. This was a very fascinating presentation and was the highlight our visit the various Napa Valley wineries. Tastings and tours are by appointment only so call the winery ahead of time.

Be sure this one is on your schedule!

By Patricia A |

Visited Hendry for the second time this trip. ALL of the wines are spectacular and very reasonably priced. You need a reservation for this seated tasting. The history and education incorporated in your visit will be the icing on the cake. If you're trying to keep your wine club memberships to a minimum go ahead and put this one on the top of your list now.

Best of the best in Napa

By SdR08 |

As all the other reviewers have said, this should be your first stop in Napa. George is 2nd generation Hendry, and he is by far one of the most knowledgeable and down to earth people you will ever meet. Pride for his wines and knowledge of his craft is evident in every comment he makes. We learned so much about wine and wine making that when you go to the other tours you miss not having George there!
Thank you George for sharing your knowledge so freely!
If you plan to go, call them or send an email, these tours fill up fast. Two tours per day, one at 10 and one at 2 , don't miss out on this great experience. The tour and tasting will take about 2 hours.
There is a $20 fee that will be waived if you buy wine.

Best Wine Tour

By 4LIFE_TRAVELER |

We signed up for the Henry wine tour and this was by far the BEST and most educational wine tour we have been on. Had such a wonderful time and their wines were really excellent!

It's All True!!

By ML B |

Found this winery on tripadvisor!! Was worth the $20 per person. We put the cost towards 2 bottles. My fav wine was the unoaked chardonnay and the pinot noir. Our group asked tons of questions and Mr. Hendry was very gracious in answering all of them. The vineyard is very lovely, the tasting room is cozy and it's worth the low cost. 2 hours goes by fast. I'd visit again and recommend to friends!

Learned so much about wines

By daveho2000 |

My wife, daughter and I took the owner’s tour back in May and we got so much out of it. George Hendry took us around his vineyard and winery and practically gave a seminar on winemaking and wine tasting. During the tour, Mr. Hendry went into the history of Napa and his family’s winery in particular. He discussed the conditions that affects how the quality of the grapes, how grapes are picked, destemmed, and its juice extracted. Then he went into fermentation, the interaction of the wine with oak in barrels, and how long wine could age and develop after bottling. He even discussed the economics of winemaking. During the wine tasting, Mr. Hendry went into how tannin affects how we taste (wonder why the second sip of a dry wine is different than the first sip?) and why food pairing is important. There was so much information. I only wished I had taken notes! I have a deeper respect for the effort that goes into making a good bottle of wine. At the end of the tour and tasting, we bought a number of bottles of Hendry’s delicious zinfandel and chardonnay so we ended up not having to pay for the tour. If you are in Napa and are interested in more than just going around to different wineries and trying out wine, go to Hendry Ranch and take the owner’s tour.

Wonderful, intimate visit

By Bstaubes |

We loved our visit to Hendry! It’s a beautiful setting surrounded by vineyards. We were the only couple booked for a tasting while we were there so we were given undivided attention. We learned a lot of the history of the winery and about wines in general. Would highly recommend this winery if you’re looking for a smaller, high quality, family run spot!

By DNemo |

Imagine our surprise when our tour guide introduced himself as George Hendry! What a treat! George spent three hours sharing his knowledge about wine making and tasting.
My husband and I have had the pleasure of taking a number of winery tours but none have come close to this!
Highly recommended for both the novice and expert!

Highly Informational!

By SunNFunNJ |

If you want to learn about wine and wine making, you WILL on this tour! Even if you think you know a bit, you will certainly learn more. I took the afternoon tour and tasting with Tamra and she blesses you with an abundance of wine knowledge. Starting with a talk on the climate of the Napa valley and the history of the Hendry family is just the beginning. Afterwards, a tour around the vineyard learning how to identify the grapes, the leaves, the age of the vines is very interesting. The tour continues to the wine making equipment and the barrel room. Finally, there is an extensive tasting of 8 different wines. Tamra instructs how to identify wines by their color, aroma, taste and mouth feel. She has you imagine you are taking the sommelier exam and what tools you need to identify wines. Technical details on the chemistry of wine tasting are all highly intriguing. If you are looking for a fancy winery with a spectacular setting and luxurious surroundings, this is not the place to go. However, if you really want to learn about wine and wine making, you will most definitely enjoy this tour.

Great as always

By Caneast8228 |

This is a "must visit" whenever we come to Napa. We had a late lunch in Sonoma and the GPS sent us on a long route through the hills. We were late arriving at Hendry close to closing time. Meagan was so nice waiting for us, and suggested a few new wines for us to taste, all great. We've been here several times, and got warm welcome every time. Membership is highly recommended, because their wine, red and white, are all so good.

Must Do!

By jmkma09 |

Recently came back from a trip to Napa/Sonoma and visited this winery upon the suggestion of Trip Advisor. This is a MUST DO experience. George Hendry himself, owner, did our winery tour and the education that received was phenomenal. The cost can't be beat: $20 for a 2 1/2 hour tour complete with being in the vineyards and the price is refunded upon your making a wine purchase. The wines are fabulous. The knowledge and education received was, bar none, the best winery experience that I have ever known. Do not miss this on your next visit to Napa,

Great Winery Tour, Great Wines!

By Wonderweggers |

We read about Hendry Ranch Wines on TripAdvisor before our April trip to Napa; based on the great reviews, we decided to visit, too. So glad we did! We are not wine experts, but we like good wine, and we couldn't have been more pleased. This is an interesting and in-depth tour, and Mr. Hendry is passionate about his land, vines and wines. Clearly, there are lots and lots of winery tours in the Napa area; this one is not fancy, but the wines are great and it gives you a good appreciation for what goes into making each wine, how the land, climate and care impact it, and how it's done. Mr. Hendry greets groups out on the front porch for a introduction and you literally go from soil and vine, learning about the different grapes, water needs, harvest, soil, etc. to crushing, fermentation, bottling and then tasting. It's clear that Mr. Hendry loves what he does, and during the tasting, he shared lots of ideas for pairing the wines with complementary foods/meals. He actually pours the wines himself for the group, and is fun to listen to. We ended up buying a case of wine to take back with us! The prices are reasonable and we like the idea of supporting a smaller, independent wine maker who is so passionate about what they do. You need to make a reservation; we called the day ahead.

So glad we picked this tour!!

By gigglegirlie |

This tour was outstanding from the moment of booking (very friendly email confirmations including detailed info about the tour, as well as other tours in napa and recommended restaurants) George was so informative, interesting and funny! You could tell he was genuinely passionate about wine. The price of the tour, for what you get, was cheap enough anyway...but they waiver this cost if you buy some of the wine at an eual value (which after tasting...u will!!! It's beautiful.) This HAS to be the best wine tour in Napa. Thanks George, :)

Go Here First!

By TightTraveler |

We chose this tour because of other Tripadvisor reviews, and we were so glad we did. Everything else has already been said...we'll just add to the chorus of praise for this tour. George Hendry, the second generation owner and "payer of the bills" leads guests out into the vineyard for a two hour education about vine growing, grape harvesting and finally, wine making. Then, its inside to see the juicing and fermenting area. Upstairs, you return to a sit-down tasting of a full flight of all ten wines that the winery is currently offering. The tour and the tasting is only $20! George continues your education about taste, wine and food. If you go here first, you will use the education you received at every other winery you visit. Don't forget, if you buy wine, the tasting fee is waived!! Thanks George...we had the best time!

Amazing winery experience with Jeff!

By MaryKate601 |

My husband and I went to Hendry after reading many fantastic reviews on Tripadvisor and Yelp. This winery completely surpassed our expectations, and was the best vineyard we visited during our three day trip to Napa Valley. Jeff, the wine maker, gave our 2:00 tour. He was not only funny and knowledgable, but he was open about sharing his experience and wisdom about the wine making process with us. We learned so much about wine from this tour+tasting experience! The tour ended with an informative tasting session where we tasted through about seven or eight wines. Since we were there on a weekend, the tour+tasting fee per person was $50, but these fees are waived if you purchase bottles of wine. We felt that overall this was an amazing deal and experience! We toured or tasted at eight other vineyards and did not have as great of a time. Thank you, Jeff!

Warning: you must make reservations

By Jane T |

If you’re expecting a place to drop it and taste wines for a fee, be warned: this is a reservation-only place. We drove about 30 minutes to get there and it’s quite remote. When we arrived, the staff very nicely told us they couldn’t accommodate us because it’s by reservation only. They only do private tastings and a tour that takes 90 minutes.

Didn’t taste the wines.

Best winery tour I've ever been on

By ma_opinions |

We have lived in Northern California for decades and have been on lots of wine tours and done lots of tastings. This one stands far above all the others. Jan (one of the managers of the winery) gave us the tour and tasting. Her intimate knowledge of the business, her witty remarks and her chemistry background made her tour more informative than any I have ever been on. She took us into the vineyard where workers were tending the vines and explained what they were doing. The trip through the winemaking area gave us a chance to see the equipment close up (I mean as in close enough to touch and smell.) Tasting was equally informative. We tasted 11 wines. Several of the wines were paired with a similar wine (e.g. Unoaked vs Barrel Fermented Chardonnay) so that we could understand how different approaches to making the wine change the smell and taste of the wine.

Best of Napa

Mr. Hendry led our tour and wine tasting - what an amazing experience to learn from such a sweet and knowledgeable man.

A Great Afternoon!

By Louise J. |

What a great way to spend the afternoon with friends. "T" was a fabulous host! She shared the history of the Hendry family wine ranch. We were able to taste some the grapes right off the vines which was very interesting.. We got to hear some of the science behind the wine making. Hendry truly wants to make good wines. We were able to take our time and taste different varietals that we were interested in. Thank you T for being so accommodating. We look forward to a return visit.

Thanks tripadvisor for this rec!

By isitfriday |

This vinyard if off the beaten path in Napa, not up the 29 like everything else we visited on our recent trip to Napa - but worth seeking out. we took a tour with Jan, and it was very interesting, and fun. we learned a lot about the process, and the science beind the wine making. the facility is nice, and while the wines are not my personal preference, they pride themselves in zero residual sugar (and i like a sweeter wine) they were quite good, and we learned so much. I loved Sadie the dog, she was so cute and follwed us everywhere.

Educational Understanding of the Process of Making Wine

By KarlynnKM |

Hendry Vineyards was a fantastically informative experience. George Hendry, the owner himself, conducts the tour and takes you through the entire vineyard for a visit which lasts over 2 hours. This tour gives you more than a tasting; it is an educational understanding of the process of making wine. During the tasting we tried over 10 different kinds of wine and George really hits on how and why you feel certain reactions in your mouth from particular wines. You definitely should schedule your visit here early in your trip because you will gain knowledge you will find useful throughout other tours.

Small and inviting winery

By unlevin |

We stumbled on Hendry Ranch Winery a number of years ago before many people had discovered it. We were in love immediately. George Hendry gave an amazing tour of his property and explained in such detail about the growing process and the way the wine is made, we felt like we received an amazing education. The wine tasting was so informative and educational, we learned so much about each varietal and how important it is to pair certain foods with certain wines. We joined the wine club and love taking family and friends to visit and taste the wine. The staff working there, though small are highly dedicated people who undeniably love working there. I highly recommend Hendry Ranch Winery to anyone coming to Napa.

The wine host was extremely knowledge, learned a lot about how to taste one and the distinguishing factors.

By irish9chicago_IL |

We had a great time tasting wine here, very knowledgeable host who shared alot of her knowledge with us. We even met the owner. Beautiful ranch, with great wines. We ended up buying a bottle to bring home and they even had packing materials. Loved this winery.

Best winery tour!

By dmh415 |

Hendry is a very good small winery with a wide selection of wines. There are lots of those in Napa. What makes this one stand out from the rest is the amazingly informative and educational tour given by George Hendry himself. He is very knowledgable about wine if that interests you, you won't find anywhere better. The tour lasts 2-3 hours and ends with a group tasting where he points out how we all taste things differently and gives tips on what wines are best paired with different foods. He is not a wine snob and will not tell you how he can taste a different bowl of fruit with every sip. His information is useful and practical and everyone will be able to relate to what he says. This is by far the best and most interesting wine tour I have ever had. The tour costs $40 per person but there is no charge if you spend an equivalent amount on wine, which is not hard to do. Look at it like a tour with a free bottle or a bottle with a free tour:)

By emily172 |

This was our first stop while visiting the Napa Valley which was definitely the right decision. The tour was well worth the money, especially considering the fee goes toward your purchase. We were convinced we were at the wrong place because you basically drive past an old house and park next to a barn. You're at the right place. However, Mr. Hendry's tour was very informative and interesting. It starts outside (dress appropriately, no heels!) in the vineyard and ends with your tasting inside. It was one of the few wine tours where we were brought into the basement and introduced to the whole process. The samples are plentiful. Overall, we really enjoyed this tour and brought home several bottles of wine.

By Pholt73 |

I read about this tour on Tripadvisor and was not disappointed. This is not a commercial, booze it up sort of wine tour. This tour is for people that genuinely want to learn about wine - how it's produced and how to enjoy it. Jeff, our tour guide, was very informative. He has an engineering background, so the process is presented in a technical way which my husband and I appreciated. Not that this is a snooze by any means!! The wines presented were also very good. We actually did a food pairing with one of the wines to help us better understand tannins. We ended up purchasing wine, of course! I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who visits Napa and wants to know more about what they are drinking.

By Jacob White |

THere is a reason this is one of the hightest rated tours in Napa! George Hendry owner and CEO (also acclaimed physycist) was our tour guide. He graciously accomodating us by taking our tour at 9am instead of the normal first tour @ 10am (arranged by Dave @ Platypus tours see my review there Excellente!).

This is a small estate with production at right around 12,000 cases, 204 gross acres, 114 net vineyard acres, but they farm 11 different varietals. This just a taste of the wealth of information George provides during his tour specifically about his estate; he also goes intricately into the making and science of wine. He touches briefly on the economics of wine, but not su much to turn you off. George answers any questions with detail, but at his own pace and meter.

There is one caveat to this tour. It is long and may have more information than you will be able to focus on if you do this tour later in the day. My review would have been drastically different if we had toured this as our 3rd winery and not our first.

BUT as a first this place allows you to have a strong foundation to build your day and knowledge on allowing you to use your newfound knowledge to gaze adoringly into the hills and vineyards on your later tours content with the feeing you know far more about winemaking than this particular tour is letting on.

Great Experience

By sheenyb10 |

Did an 11am tasting with Therese and it was such a great experience. This was the highlight of our day in Napa and much more than your typical tasting. Therese was very knowledgeable and we learned quite a lot not only about their wines but just on wine making and how to taste wines in general. It was very educational and so fun. To make it even better the tasting fee was waived with equivalent wine purchase and we did not hesitate to bring home a couple of bottles. It was clear they were more concerned about providing a memorable experience than just trying to sell you something which was refreshing for a Napa winery. The grounds were so peaceful and picturesque. We will definitely be back, hopefully for a tour next time!

By Furcate |

Come here & sit through George Hendry's amazing tour! If you want to know more than your sommelier upon returning home, spend 3 hours doing this tour. You will leave feeling overwhelmed with the passion & brilliance he delivers. George is a cult icon in the Valley, just ask around of anyone who's been here more than 2 weeks. This was by far the best tour we had by a landslide. Thanks Tripadvisor!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place!

By foodie50Ny |

Okay, if you can only do one winery this is the place to go...if you can do more than one, be sure to leave time to fit this one in! Tours/tastings are by appointment only but I called the morning of the day we were available and managed to get an afternoon tour without a problem. Tours run about 2 1/2 hrs. George Hendry was our guide and he is a wonder of information--about the property (he was raised there), about the grapes/process of winemaking and about food to pair with the 12 wines you will be tasting. The wines are lovely and presented in twos to allow for comparisons(i.e. barrel aged vs stainless steel processed). This allows you to really understand how the differences in the production process affect the flavor of the finished product. George's science background (he is a distinguished engineer in cyclotron design) makes for a great learning experience. The tour is $20.00 but the price is applied to any wine purchased. Do yourself a favor and take the tour, get yourself a lovely bottle of wine and re-live the experience with a meal at home. Definitely a worthwhile experience.

Great Wine Tour

By FoodieIzMe |

We had a wine tour with the owner, the best opportunity to learn about wine making. He kindly answered all our questions. I would recommend this place just for the tour. The wines are not that exceptional.

By Travelag7 |

My husband and I visited this winery in June of 2012. This was the only winery we visited on a one day drive in to Napa. I loved this wine tasting! We tried 11 wines and our host, Jeff, was entertaining, informative and great at answering our questions. It was the only one we visited, but I'm glad we did. I would advise making a reservation. We were able to get in without a reservation, but only because they had a couple of no shows. We paid $20 a piece but they applied it to our wine purchase. Great visit!!

Not necessarily the #1 thing to do in Napa

By Beefhead |

My wife and I went to this winery based on it being the #1 attraction in Napa according to TripAdvisor. Was it informative? Yes. Were the wines good? Yes. Did it need to be almost 3 hours? No. If it was under 2 hours, I think I would give it a higher rating...

George is a nice man, but it's like you're getting a tour from your grandpa. He's smart and knowledgable, but doesn't really volunteer much information. He often looks to the group to ask questions, so his information is really driven by the content of the questions. I recommend coming armed with questions that you really want to know the answers to, not just asking questions for the sake of questions (which my group kinda did).

I'd also recommend taking the early tour. My wife and I were a little buzzed from other tastings earlier in the day, so listening to George talk slowly for 1.5 hours started to put us to sleep. The tour really drags at times. The first part could really be done in 30-45 minutes.

I'm not upset that I went to this winery, because there were a couple "experiments" that really gives you a better understanding of wine. I would recommend it under the conditions I explained before (take the early tour, come with questions). But don't think of it as the only thing you need to do in Napa, because we had just as good of an experience at other wineries in the area (sitting outside at Artesa, taking the tour at Quixote).

To each their own...

Excellent Educational Wine Experience

By kzecb40 |

Toured Hendry Ranch Winery on June 27th. It is a small beautiful winery. Mr. Hendry was our tour guide and he was patient, thorough and informative. His love of the wine making process was evident throughout. This is not just a quick walk through and taste tour. It is an opportunity to learn and question numerous details of the wine making process. The tour/tasting takes about 2.5 hours and may take a little longer. We sampled 8 wines. Mr. Hendry not only explained how each wine was made and the price points for each. He also took the time to discuss food pairings for each wine. I took lots of notes! We found the wines to be excellent and bought quite a bit to take back to friends at home. The Hendry wines surpass those of a more expensive price point. If you want more than the typical tour/taste experience, this tour is for you.

Education beyond Expectation!

By Sandy271 |

We are locals and we wanted to create a unique experience for our family from Washington DC. We booked a tour with George and we receive knowledge for a lifetime. We thought we knew about wines. NOT EVEN. Go to one of George's lectures and you will be changed for life. Thank you George for your time, effort and education about wines and tastings, we have not stop talking about it for three days now, although we have enjoyed one of your wines, "Red". We recommend to anyone who thinks they know wines. You will be quite surprised.

desappointing

By Jingles B |

after reading all the good reviews, we had made a reservation for the winery visit and wine tasting . We spend 1.5 hour standing in the field watching the grape plants. The guide was not very loud or enthousiast so it was hard to understand and easy to get bored . The tasting was boring as well, tasting only the wine that the owner wanted to promote and sell.... did not learn anything new even I was not an expect on wines.

Beyond Impressed with delicious wines

By CORockyMtnMama |

I spend a weekend in Napa with 7 friends. We toured many wineries while out over a weekend and Hendry was by far the most impressive tour. Its 2.5 hrs but it just flys by. Mr. Hendry himself gave our tour out to the vineyards, through the machinery that makes all the wines and finally through a 12 wine tasting. The tasting was so interesting and well done and the wines were truly magnificent! Everyone was so welcoming and friendly. I thought I knew a lot about wine going in but Mr. Hendry taught me so much more and it was so interesting to see how it’s made. We bought the most wine here because it was truly great. they had something for every pallet. the $20 fee is waived with the purchase of wine. We had such a fun time!! I will definitely return to this vineyard again.

Worst experience in my trip

By Adrián A |

Worst attitude and attention by the people in charge. He didn't offer us an alternative of anything. One of my crew was trying to write an article about Napa Winery, he's an international sommelier. Bad attitude.

Wine making and tasting , A memorable experience

By Priscilla J |

We were taken around the winery and explained the entire process of wine making by George Hendry himself. Could not have got someone more knowledgeable. We got to taste about eleven different wines. Great experience

Best wine tasting ever!

By John123456_11 |

This by far is one of the best if not the best wine tasting you will do. It’s a small winery with a great story. Not the corporate giants. We were the only couple at the winery. Tamara was our host and spent 90 minutes going over the history of the vineyard and the wines and grapes. The tasting was $75, but 1) it was for 8 wines and 2) can be applied to a wine purchase. The wines were all delicious. If you had to choose just one winery to visit in Napa, this should be it. IF you can get a reservation.

Hendry Ranch Winery Tour & Tasting

By Fingerpicker8 |

If you want to really find out more about wine making and the wine making business, I highly recommend arranging for a tour of Hendry Ranch Winery. It will cost $20 per person, but the tour cost may be applied to a wine purchase. This is the only winery we found that had that option.

George Hendry, the winery owner, was our tour guide. His family bought the property and have been growing grapes and making wine since 1939. The property is the site of some of the oldest vineyards in Napa, first planted in 1859.

George Hendry, like many private winery owners had a successful career away fro the ranch. He has a Master’s degree in Engineering and holds several important patents in the Cyclotron industry. George began devoting his time and resources to the ranch in the early 1970s and has applied his engineering skills and scientific approach to growing grapes, making wine and designing and building his winery.

On a tour, you will visit the vineyards and learn a great deal about the business of wine making. We learned about the reasons why French oak barrels are used, how to tell if a barrel could be used for another batch of wine or if it should be retired, many of the fine points of harvesting and crushing grapes and extracting the juice and where the costs are in wine production. If you have visited other wineries, you may begin to appreciate some of the ingenious design aspects of this winery that was completely designed around efficient work flow.

The wine tasting is a true comparison tasting where wines are sampled in pairs. You are strongly encouraged to taste, not drink, your wine and spit cups are provided for every person. George explained exactly what to be aware of with different varietals and demonstrated how tannins contribute to the “mouth feel” of a wine and how they work with fatty foods to refresh your taste buds. He also provided valuable help on pairing different foods with wines. This tasting is actually more like a seminar and for those who just want to go somewhere to drink some wine, this is probably not the best choice for you.

Of course, it all does come back to the wine itself. We tasted ten wines, all of which were very good and all made entirely from grapes grown on the ranch. The wines range in price from $18 for the Pinot Gris to $55 for the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon with most of the rest being $30 - $38. I particularly liked the Barrel Fermented Chardonnay, the Pinot Noir and the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon. But, if you like good wine, you will surely find your own favorites at Hendry.

Wonderful wine, amazing engineers

By Nicole S |

My husband and I went to Hendry thanks to some great Yelp reviews this past weekend and we couldn't have been more pleased. Jeff, our wine engineer for the morning, was hilarious, informative and genuinely happy to have us there and share with us his cad drawings of the vineyards varietals. We were happy to listen and you will be too. Let's be real, you go for the wine and the rest is all a bonus. Yet we felt that we got more than just a few sips of good wine but rather a really interesting session in wine making, family history, tricks of the trade to wine tasting, food paring all with plenty of warm humor and in a comfortable setting. The wine doesn't disappoint either. We were loaded for bear leaving there and I can't wait to open a bottle soon. The petit verdot is fantastic and a rare find. The wine will draw you into Hendry but the people make you want to sit a spell and chat.

Hendry Winery Best Kept Secret!

By dragonlady629 |

We are getting ready to take our 3rd tour of Hendry Winery and it is the best kept secret in Napa. We learned of their FABULOUS Zin at a local restaurant in Houston, TX. When we were in Napa we called to see if we could come for a tour. It was down a beautiful back road outside of Napa. We finally spotted a tiny mailbox that said "Hendy Ranch". A man in overalls out in the field waved at us as we drove by. We later learned it was George Hendry himself, a Ph.D. from Cal Berkeley who took us out in the field to show us how they determine when grapes are ready for harvest. It was harvest time so they took us inside and let us look under the microscope to see the fermentation process and to look in the vats as well. We also had the opportunity to go into the barrel room where they told us about the type of barrels they purchase and how they are prepared to hold their excellent varietals. He then took us inside and opened every varietal Hendry produces while giving us tips on perfect pairings. Angela in the office communicates with us regularly to keep us appraised of Hendry buying opportunities and arranges perfect return trips so we can show off the winery to all of our friends. The thing my husband and I love most about Hendry wines is that they are excellent quality without all the hype or big price. George Hendry is all about quality without fancy labels or price tags. They started out only selling their grapes but one day they asked why are we selling our grapes to the very pricey Opus and not producing wines ourself?

Amazing, exceeded all expectations

I read all the reviews on trip advisors before I went and was really excited to get the tour. It is hard to exceed expectations with all these reviews, but this was exceptional. George Hendry gave us the tour and has been tending to his family winery since he was 3! His experience and knowledge of wine is exceptional. The tour was informative and the testing was excellent. Not just tasting flights, but more of a wine seminar. If you buy some wine they even wave the tour fee. We bought three bottles. You will not be dissappointed with this tour.

Wonderful Experience!

To kick off our Napa wine tasting adventure, we stopped in at Hendry Ranch and took the Wine Makers Tour/Tasting. It was the perfect way to start!

The wine maker, George, is smart, funny, passionate and extremely knowledgeable about wine and about the history of the area. He taught us so much and the lessons helped us more fully appreciate all of the wines we sampled during the rest of our trip.

We found the price very reasonable, especially considering they apply it toward the purchase of wine. We took full advantage that policy!

Very informative!!! Good wine :)

This tour lasts about 2 1/2 hours so be prepared. It is very informative about he wine making process and I enjoyed it thouroughly. You go through a sort of tasting drill at the end and learn about food pairings as well. This is a small and very lovely family owned winery and their wines are very good and they are very friendly. I highly reccomend visiting.

2nd time is a charm!

We visited Hendry Ranch in 2012 and this time, with a group of 11 we came back and we're glad we did. George Hendry has only gotten better with his tour, explanations of the science of wine making and also, how your palate works when drinking wine. His organic chemistry education (he has a Masters) serves him well to educate you at a level of understanding that no one else in the valley can - at least that we've discovered. We ended up visiting 6 wineries over 2 days and by far, our group was unanimous that George was the best. You will learn more about wine, winemaking and wine drinking than any other winery you'll visit. I would recommend this to be your 1st stop so you will appreciate the rest of them.
Here's an example of what George taught us - old vines do not produce great wines. He told us we will hear that from others. He used the comparison to us as humans - are you as good at 75 as you were at 25 - No! Our very next stop at Mondavi, the very young, green tour guide proudly stated they had a small portion of the vineyard with 75 year old vines that produced the very best wine. We all looked at each other and just smiled as we had been schooled by George to know better.
One tip - George himself only does 1 tour a day. I believe it's the one at 10am and it usually is only a group of 8. They made an exception for our group of 11.
Enjoy!

Educational tour, fun!

George Hendry leads the tour beginning by describing ideal growing conditions for grapes and how certain weather, soil, pests and type of land (hill, flat, shade, sun, etc.) impact the grapes and the type/cost of wine they are able to produce. If you are interested in really learning the ins and outs of wine making, this is definately the tour for you! Our tour ended in a wine tasting in which George helped us understand how each of our tastebuds work differently by having us try different tasting techniques. Highly recommended to take this tour & tasting either as a group or just a couple.

Excellent and informative tour

If you are looking to slug some wines, and listen to sales people this is not for you.. if you want to learn in a short period many of the fundamentals of vinyeards and wineries, and some very, very informative information about pairing wines, how people taste wines and why they taste different to different people, this is the one for you. We had George Hendry himself and he is a fascinating gentleman with a wealth of experience which he readily shares, and takes any and all questions and gives informative answers. Highly recommend!

Best wine tour by far!!

We were lucky enough to stumble upon the trip advisor reviews for this winery and decided to check it out. We were pleasantly surprised and would recommend everyone visit this winery for a tour. Given by the owner, we learned everything imaginable about the wine making process, from planting to harvesting, to diseases of the vines, to costs and styles of wine production, to food pairings. We are from the Niagara wine region and have done MANY winery tours over the years and still learned some new things came away with a better appreciation of the world of wine. Tasting of 7 wines, with great teaching from the owner himself. Couldn't have asked for a better way to start the trip in Napa!!

A fun informative tour.

We had a great two hour tour of the property along with a tasting session of seven wines. My fiance and I learnt so much about wine. The winery provided a nice relaxed setting for an enjoyable afternoon, thanks so much for the experience!
The tour is also great value as you can purchase wine to the value of your tour fee which other wineries don't offer.

The real deal

My husband and I went here because it was rated so highly on tripadvisor. It was fantastic. Sweet man who has run and owned the vineyard for 40 years (George) takes you from sup to nuts in the process and agriculture of growing grapes and making wine. The grounds are beautiful and when the tasting begins George is generous in what he shares. He does little exercises to expand your knowledge of your palate. For us, this was the exact "wine tour" we wanted. It was why we came to napa. Its only $20 a head for a 2.5 hour tour/tasting and of course the fee is waived if you buy wine. Excellent!

Amazing wine education!

Tamra educated us on wine and the experience was amazing. Learned so much in a very short time. Loved it!

The Ultimate Wine Tour and Tasting Experience!

By emilie01010 |

I booked a tour of Hendry Ranch Wines because it was ranked #1 on TripAdvisor for activities in Napa. It had some of the best reviews ever. I decided this was my winery tour and tasting place. The cost was $40 each but they spent 2.5-3 hours with my friend and me. It exceeded all expectations and put all other winery tours and tastings to shame.

The Hendry Ranch winery had been family owned since 1939 and is composed of 114 vineyard acres stretched over 47 vineyard blocks. It’s a picturesque spot in Napa and the perfect tour and tasting for someone who wants to learn more about the wine making and wine tasting process.

Our tour group consisted of 14 people plus our guide, Mr. Hendry, who was the actual owner of the winery. He took two hours out of his day to talk to us about his vineyard. He regaled us with interesting tidbits about how closeness to a creek can affect a vine’s grape production and the taste of the grape. He confided how some of his experiments yielded cool things and others were a lesson learned. Through it all, he has a curious spirit that pushes his vineyard to be better and better.

There is nice indoor seating where we had our tasting. The owner spent almost an hour teaching us about his wines. I learned that many reds taste bitter to me because I have a tannin sensitivity. It’s also why I love lots of cream and splenda in my coffee.

This is the first time I really savored wine. It was a wonderful experience. I appreciated Mr. Hendry’s frankness about wines. He explained that everyone’s palette is different. So what is delicious to you might not be to me. Award-winning wines may not please your palette, but that’s okay because wine drinking should be tailored to the individual.

I enjoyed most of his wines, which is very rare for me. I found out I have a liking for pinot noir and zinfandels (which are both reds).

The tasting included 10 wines. I ended up purchasing six bottles and sending them home. Two for Dad and four for me. The staff were extremely efficient in the purchasing process. Made it a joy to spend money there. I’ll definitely be ordering more of his wines in the future.
