Great place to “spook” around

By jlawrence15 |

I have been to Hollywood Cemetery numerous times and I always see something new each time I go. It is especially spooky at Halloween time. I am amazed at the number of beautiful trees that are there, some of which are original (designed in 1847). Among many other famous residents, this is the final resting place of U.S. Presidents James Monroe and John Tyler. There is an impressive 90 foot Pyramid monument to the 18,000 Confederate War Dead buried in the cemetery. Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederacy is also buried there. There are many fabulous views of the James River, which has, for eons, carried the tops of Blue Ridge mountains downstream to create tidewater Virginia. This is a must see when visiting Richmond.

hauntingly beautiful

By RachelRaven |

This garden-style cemetery can be walked (wear comfortable footwear and be prepared to spend several hours) or driven through carefully. Its gravestones and statuary are typical of their eras, and are poignant reminders of how present death, particularly of the young, was in earlier times. The cemetery has historical value as the final resting place of U.S. presidents James Monroe and John Tyler, as well as president of the Confederacy Jefferson Davis. Besides being peaceful and evocative in the way that 19th century (and earlier) cemeteries are, the site adds another layer to Richmond's history.

A must see

By Jennifer T |

Hollywood cemetery is a beautiful place that is a must see location. The cemetery holds so much history and beauty it is a place to remember our past and honor those who have passed.

For the love of history

By Melissa G |

This is a great place to pack a lunch and plan on spending at least 4 to 5 hours here. You can walk all through the cemetery and visit the historical plots of servicemen as well as some presidents. Great trip for field trips .

A beautiful and peaceful 'park'

By JohnOfSouthCharlotte |

Having been away from Richmond for many years and only spending time visiting with family when in town, my aunt and I opted to visit Hollywood; a gem hidden on the banks of the James river which I had long forgotten about.
With the winding lanes, rolling hills and the incredible stones and mausoleums, it was a very calming and enjoyable visit. There are many old family friends, famous Richmonders and former Presidents buried there and it was nice to drive through and find the various ones.
Hollywood was laid out to be a very sacred place and with the very artfully carved headstones and other markers, it was like a park full of art. One the back side which is on a bluff overlooking the James River, one feels like they are in the middle of nowhere until one looks a little south, downriver, and see all the buildings and skyscrapers.
If you enjoy history, art-in the many forms it can take in a grave marker- and such you'll very much enjoy the time at Hollywood.

Cemetery

By Ahme1987 |

You drive thru the cemetery and follow the blue line to see the different areas of the cemetery. There are 2 US presidents and Confederate President buried in the cemetery. There is a memorial for the confederate soldiers . Also a nice view of the James River.

Vandalism

By Parker E |

We went to presidents circle and gravestones were broken purposely. Ruined the whole experience of visiting the President.

A large cemetery!!!

By patterd7 |

This cemetery is huge! We thought we could walk around to visit all the points of interest but didn't have enough time. Got to see the President's circle and some great views of Richmond and James River. Would probably drive around or take one of the tours offered.

Time in the Cemetery

By Hank |

Whether you like history, beautiful scenery, or both, this is the place for you! There is so much history here, and the grounds are kept up very well.

True History

By JeffBreedlove |

This is a stunning cemetery. Two US Presidents James Monroe and John Tyler, as well as the only Confederate States President, Jefferson Davis. There are more Confederate officers buried here than any other cemetery. Many Virginia leaders. There are wonderful views overlooking the James river

It’s free. Be responsible.

Beautiful cemetery

By RosieRo56 |

The Hollywood Cemetery is located in Richmond and is a beautiful and peaceful spot.

You can drive through the cemetery or there is limited parking on side streets. I went on a Sunday afternoon and wanted to walk and had no trouble finding a spot nearby. There is no admission either way.

The walkways are paved throughout the cemetery, but it is very hilly so if you have trouble walking I would be conscious of that. Other than that, although it is quite big, it’s very easy to navigate and does have street signs throughout. I think you can get a map, but office hours are only through the week.

It really is a lovely place with lots of beautiful headstones and statues, but it is a cemetery so if that’s not your thing, you might not find it super fascinating.

It is a good way to spend a sunny afternoon though if you like to walk and enjoy some history.

Historical Walking Tour

By realgrillmaster |

I booked the guided walking tour through the Valentine Museum. Our guide, LeAnn, was energetic, knowledgeable, and pleasant. The tour lasted a little more than 2 hours and covered a lot of ground. It was very enjoyable.

Really quite interesting

By Tim |

My wife and I visited Richmond to take in some of the city. We had heard of the cemetery but had never been to it.
Leann was a great guide and offered us a bottle of water because it was so incredibly hot.
We got to see where two former US presidents where buried, members of the confederacy and other notables.
If you’re out of shape, a two hour walking tour with some hills may not be for you.
The grounds were well kept, our guide was great and we learned a lot on the tour.

Beautiful drive through

By Trista R |

Husband and I drove through, he had never been there before. Saw some of the more notable sites within the cemetery and of course, the beautiful view of the river.

4 hour ride and I was pleased!

By Cynthia H |

I discovered the Hollywood Cemetery while searching for the best graveyards in the U.S. Since it was close to where we live, we made an overnight trip to Richmond. The cemetery is not hard to find. Make sure you have some change for tolls. The auto toll we encountered required exact change of 35 cents.

I sent my husband in to purchase the map for 1.00. The maps shows the route to see the most visited sites. We would park and walk some.

The pyramid monument was awesome! It is surrounded by the graves of soldiers. For those who love Civil War places, this area will be of interest to them. The monuments were varied and beautiful. To be in a large city like Richmond it was really quiet. I heard street noise on the soldiers side of the cemetery. Strolling along the hills and looking out to the river was very peaceful. This is a great spot for walking your dog. You could spend a day here and not see the whole cemetery. We spent 3 hours the day we arrived and came back the next morning and spent another 2 to get more pictures.

My 12 year old brought a camera and enjoyed taking photographs of the graves. Finally , something in his hand that was not a video game!

Don't miss the President's Circle or the Jefferson Davis memorial. This is the area of the river views.

This would be a gorgeous spot in the fall with all the trees changing colors.

For those who love strolling through graveyards, you will not be disappointed.

Stately Cemetery

By Kate Illinois1 |

Well manicured grounds. Erected in 1847, this stately cemetery offers views of majestic monuments and gravestones. We used the map on their website to navigate our way around. It would have been easier with paper form. Paper maps are sold at the cemetery office for $1.00. We did not stop for there wasn't a parking space available.

Cool Cemetery with lots of famous and infamous buried here

By kghudson |

Came on a beautiful afternoon. Stopped at the office for a map of the grounds and tour drive. We drove thru the cemetery following the tour route and using the map we were able to find many famous folk buried there. Lots of hills and narrow roads - I would recommend driving and if you could find a guide that would be cool too. Free and a neat way to spend a couple of hours.

Beautiful and amazing!

By Dena B |

Beautiful setting and so much symbolism in the tombstones and masoleums. Take the tour to get the full impact. Love it so much!

Follow the blue line and see it all!

By baze3026 |

I live in Richmond and use the cemetery as a place to run on a regular basis. I see many travelers try to make their way through the cemetery with map in hand. The trick is to follow the blue line on the road...It's about a 3 mi loop that will take you past all of the major historic gravesites.

Fascinating place to visit.

By Bill S |

Spent 90 minutes wandering around this cemetery. I have been to the National Cemetery at Arlington as well as the World War II Normandy Cemetery and the Civil War section of the Hollywood Cemetery had the same effect on me. Not as orderly, or as groomed but equally moving. Cemetery is large and even with a map one can easily get disorientated. Civil War section is only a small part of this large cemetery. Don't let the name confuse you - it is named after the Holly trees on the site!

If you Love History, this is the place

By JoeyWi |

This cemetery is so peaceful and in the middle of town!! Take a map or a tour to visit all the highlights. It has plenty of historical people laid to rest here. If you like historical places, the headstones are beautiful. It's a great place to visit while in Richmond.

The fog only added to the visit

By tosl |

Use a map but also wander. Empty and quiet, it was an evocative visit to the cemetery. A must see for Civil War buffs and photographers. An excellent companion to a visit to the nearby Civil War Museum - 5 minute drive.

A mix of interesting and creepy

By ehcdiva |

We did a drive through of the cemetery during the day so it wasn't too spooky. I liked that they have arrows marking the way to president's circle which is what I'm sure most people are going for. It has a few really nice views in the cemetery also, so that was unexpected.

Very Unique

By JoAnn M |

What an truly unique cemetery with so much cool history. All of the different head stones and family vaults are very fascinating.

Our complex history, even in the afterlife

By FamSiam V |

I went through on a chilly but sunny Sunday morning, and mostly had the place to myself. A walk would be very feasible, but because I had limited time, I drove - which was also doable. There’s no great parking near key most grave sites, but adequate room throughout to pull over and park for a few minutes. The history here is incredible, and of course complex. Take a picture of the stone map at the entrance to navigate the cemetery or use a guidebook on your smart phone. In addition to the presidential graves (ponder the fact that as of 2018, John Tyler, our 10th President, born in 1790, still has two living grandsons!), check out the memorial for the tragic Confederate figure, Major General George Pickett (of Pickett’s Charge infamy at Gettysburg); his wife was the first woman interred in the confederate section.

Guided tour

By William B |

I didn’t expect to enjoy a cemetery tour but was surprised by the history and stories provided by our guide. It was a welcome break from indoor meetings and provided a glimpse into Richmond history.

Nice meander

By jillikin |

I think of cemeteries as people museums and there are certainly a variety of notable Richmond residents here. Lots of very nice mature trees and unique monuments. Be sure to see President Monroe’s grace. It’s beautiful. It’s a little tricky to find but look for the highest point with a view of the river.

Lots to See

By Terry C |

We've been to the Hollywood Cemetery before, but love going back and finding new things. I realize it is a "working" cemetery, but it would be nice to have a tour on property to show the highlights that would keep from tromping all over the place trying to find a particular grave. The staff was so helpful and very accommodating.

Who knew cemeteries could be so interesting

By Andrew K |

The blend of history, a very walkable and attractive venue makes this a great place for a quiet, even contemplative time. Do wear walking shoes. This is a large place with undulating grounds. A map of the cemetery is available and recommended so you can go to the places and graves of interest. If you go to the edge on the river side, there is a great view of the city...really nice at dusk when the lights come up.

Experience History in Hollywood Cemetary

By ArtsyGalBaltimore |

Easy drive through of an enormous southern cemetery on a quiet December morning. (Others were leisurely walking.) The graves of President Monroe and President Tyler, confederate soldiers, and Jefferson Davis. Navigated with an internet map and the well marked blue line on the roads.

Stunning

By LakeSideLife |

We are big American history Buff's and this is a must-see for anyone. Not only is it gorgeous but many famous people are buried there including former presidents and Generals. Many Confederate soldiers and many many more I highly recommend going.

Lovely, Historic Spot with Great View

By vakamalua |

A must visit in Richmond. We visited on a beautiful early fall in the late afternoon as the sun was beginning to set. This is a sprawling cemetery with historic significance. There are many benches for quiet contemplation or just to take in the best view of downtown Richmond and the James River that runs through it. It is large and hilly so we drove through making stops along the way.

Park, Art Gallery or Botanical Garden?

By Richard C |

Make plans to do a tour of Hollywood Cemetery - it is truly a hidden gem just west of downtown Richmond. The grounds could not be more picturesque - spectacular views of the James River, striking arrays of trees, shrubs and flowers plus amazing museum-quality statuary adorning the grave sights. Learn about our US presidents and Confederate soldiers buried there, the dedicated efforts to protect and maintain the ancient trees and roses and fascinating stories about "residents" and their families. We did the Highlights tour through The Valentine's Walking Tours with Kathy Whittington the last Sunday in November and enjoyed the cool fall weather and colorful leaves. Guaranteed to be the one of the best 2-hour walks you can have!!

Good almost free spot

By Rachael B |

It is only $1 to buy the map and you can do a self guided tour, use the internet site to do a tour, or call Richmond Tours to do a Segway or motor tour. We just did the self guided tour. The grounds were beautiful. It's even more meaningful if you are interested or knowledgeable about Civil War history because many infamous Confederates are buried there. Monroe, Tyler, and Davis U. S. Presidents are buried there and the views over the James River are gorgeous. I recommend the scenic drive and you can get out and walk around and park on the side of the road.

Hidden Gem

By Mimi E |

Great place to drive around and then stop at look at the view over the river. Great walking tours as well as driving tour. Kids were very interested too.

Beautiful 1847 Cemetery

By Trish W |

This huge beautiful cemetery overlooks the James River and is the resting place for Presidents' James Monroe and John Taylor. The only confederate president, Jefferson Davis, is also buried here along with 28 confederate generals. There is a huge pyramid of granite rocks in the section where 18,000 soldiers, many unidentifiable, are buried. You can drive through it following the blue line to see much of it from your car, and there are a couple of places to park along the route. A map at the entrance can help you check out the terrain. There is a tour offered that is probably very informative but we did not know about it until we were leaving. There is a wealth of history to be found here.

Historic Richmond Cemetery with two US Presidents

By JDWL |

Hollywood Cemetery is an "Old Richmond" tour spot. Many of the FFV/FFR (Famous Families of Virginia/Richmond) have burial crypts or plots here. James Monroe and John Tyler are the two US Presidents buried here. Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States is also buried here.

Gorgeous piece of American history! I enjoyed every minute of this peaceful tour.

By Dianestamp |

BEAUTIFUL!!! This cemetery is very moving and gorgeous. The trees are spectacular and it is over 135 acres of rolling hills. The tombstones are very unique and we found that over 18,000 Confederate soldiers are buried here. Jefferson Davis and his whole family are also here, along with General George Pickett. If you love history, don't miss this. I would get your information from the web, however, as the one lady in the building is not the least bit helpful. They do sell a driving map for $1 if you can get her to answer the door...

Lovely drive through cemetery

By MominOC |

History around every corner. Headstones are elaborate. We saw several with dog statues watching over... never saw that before. Nice feeling!

Electric car is the way to go!

By GoinAgainNextYear |

Our guide “E.L,” toured us up an down this beautiful hilly park-cemetery. He is is treasure trove of history and we enjoyed it all from the comfort of a little electric open sided electric car. Thanks, E.L., for a great tour and for the suggestion to go into the Jefferson Hotel Main St. entrance. It is just stunning!

Great History

By Kevin C |

Went to visit the cemetery. Spent about 3 hours there just walking and looking at the history there. Took time to get information on the memorials and read the information. Is on top of a hill with beautiful view of the river. Lot of interesting history. Great pleasure to see.

Historic landmark of Richmond

By Prawet J |

Hollywood Cemetery is a large cemetery located on South Cherry Street a few minutes walk to VCU main campus. The cemetery is open for public to drive around or walk around to see (drive is better to mee more of the place). It is also the resting place of two U.S. Presidents and a few Confederate generals and Confederate States President. Great historic place and landmark of the city.

Monday afternoon

By Tom B |

We have visited a number of notable cemeteries over the years and when I saw this listed as a place of interest at our hotel we decided to go. For a dollar you can get a map of the cemetery, which I suggest doing. We were able to find all the grave-sites we wanted to see.

Great to Drive Around

By Will A |

Beautiful views of the river and lots of historical graves and monuments. Must see in Richmond! You can drive around the whole thing if you’re lazy.

James Monroe & John Tyler Graves

By The_Wanderer1992 |

My husband and I have found an interest is visiting the gravesites of famous dead people while on vacation, so I knew I had to come here while visiting Richmond. I'm not really into Civil War history, so I skipped past all the famous Confederate soldiers buried in this cemetery. The only one I didn't skip was Jefferson Davis who is the President of the Confederacy. I also saw the graves of James Monroe and John Tyler who are both former presidents. I followed a map on the cemetery's website and used it to find our way around. It worked well until we found some of the roads were blocked from down trees.

A Delightful Gem Car Tour

By ladydiBradenton_FL |

My husband and I spent a wonderful afternoon with Mr. E. L. Butterworth, our Gem Car Tour Guide. E.L. Is a living encyclopedia about the history of Richmond and its Hollywood Cemetery. This is a unique, unforgettable experience.

Rebels and American Presidents

By Roy C |

Hollywood cemetery is filled with the graves of dead Confederate soldiers as well as the graves of three presidents, albeit one of them is Jefferson Davis, the only president of the Confederate States of America.

Upon arriving, make certain to buy the map. It costs only a dollar and will guide you to all the important memorials, although it was difficult getting to the graves of Presidents John Tyler and James Monroe as a road was closed.

I have indicated 1 to 2 hours for a visit, but some may find they require much more time, depending on their inclinations regarding historic graves.

A grave-hunter's destination

By Allan A |

High on a hill with great views of the city. Mammoth cemetery worth driving around with multiple stops. Tours offer names of the rich and famous buried there (we did not take a tour). Stumbled upon Jefferson Davis' grave and statue, though. A Richmond highlight.

Historic, large and hilly cemetery

By Tara B |

I would highly recommend driving through this cemetery. It’s way too large and hilly to walk through it in a decent amount of time. There are places along the way to pull over and walk around if need be. Recommendation would be to follow the blue line along the side of the road. It will take you to all major points of cemetery. The view at Presidents circle is beautiful. Great view of Belle’s Island.

historically important cemetary in the city

By travelinmom12 |

huge cemetery with many historically important people and groups. You can drive around (and see everything this way), or walk around (it would take several hours to see everything). Another option is to drive to one of many small parking spots and walk around in that particular area. Beautiful views of the James river in the presidential area.

Nothing Like It !

By Meander664022 |

This Cemetery on the bluffs overlooking the James River provides

a lot of history for Richmond.Presidents,Governors and Confederate

Generals(No Yankees please) all reside here!

It is very shady with massive oaks overhanging the hilly topography

of Hollywood. So it's never too hot and humid for a Hollywood stroll.

The head stones are so unique, large and plentiful that they alone

could comprise a book of their own.

If you're on a history trip to Richmond, you won't want to miss the one and

only experience of Hollywood Cemetery.

Humbled

By SAA |

In this time of pandemic and social distancing I couldn't think of a place where there was more humbling history to be experienced, must experience while in Richmond.

Beautiful Walk!

By travelingfoodiefam |

Another showcase for RVA to display the beauty and history of Richmond, either can drive through or walk. The hills can be challenging for the elderly. The walk though can be magical in a somewhat eerie way. Sights are both of natural and man made beauty.

Hollywood Cemetray

By EmmeS1744 |

Now I know where they found the pyramid for the back of a dollar. It’s in Hollywood Cemetary. Stunning views to the James River, two presidents are buried here and countless Confederate soldiers. I only wish we had done more research to be able to know some of the magnificent stories of the lives that are buried here. There was a tour but we didn’t have time to take it. We needed way more time than we had.

Cool place to explore

By Emily M |

Very cool place to explore. Beautiful and serene. Great history lesson and scenery. A few cool Geocaches

A must on your list when in Richmond

By ir0ngate69 |

OK, Richmonders love their history, and thankfully there is plenty of it here. Still, this cemetery has it all, history, presidents, the view, the calm in the midst of a city, the unique.... plan to drive through it all as to walk it would be a good hike. When I first moved here from a war-torn country, I couldn’t understand why one would want to see a cemetery. This is like none other. Go see it.

Beautiful with lots of history

By Hayden T |

An absolutely beautiful cemetery overlooking the James River, and also a great place to take some cool pictures. It's free to go into the cemetery and look around, and you can drive through it. The only downside is that it closes at 6 pm, so you can't watch the sunset here or look for ghosts.

Cemetary drive

By claw98 |

Hubby couldn't walk far, so this was a great thing to do since you can drive around it. We enjoyed finding the highlights and seeing the view to the river. There is a bathroom at the entrance too, which is nice after a couple hours sightseeing.

fabulous spot for nature walking, and history

By Debi K |

beautiful old cemetery, resting place to lots of interesting, and tragic characters. take a walking tour through The Valentine Museum, or buy the map at the entry.

Architectural amazement

By Theonek |

We did the website tour. The comments were very helpful. The directions were lacking sure to no street names. We also used a nap from another store that has names. Check to see if the front area has a paper map. It will make negotiating the cemetery easier. The tombs, head stones, cobbles, crypts, and staues were a delight to see. We studied more about the architecture when we got home.

Incredible Beauty and History

By GrampyW |

This cemetery is an amazingly beautiful haven of solitude and is ripe for a time of contemplation.

The final resting place for former Presidents and national figures, along with many long-forgotten more-common folk, it is a marvel of arboreal and architectural beauty. Well worth a stop, and a long, peaceful, walk.

Vists the sweetness of the dead

By 736shelbyj |

This cemetery is very different. The gardens are beautiful. I have never seen anything so unique, and yet it tells tell

Must Do for cemetery lovers

By Angie M |

I loved this humongous cemetery. There was so much to see. Stop at the info center and pay the $1 for the map of the place. I got lost even with the map. I stayed a couple of hours, but could’ve stayed much longer. The Confederate monument was interesting and so many famous soldiers were buried there. Jefferson Davis’s grave and statue was worth seeing. President Monroe’s Memorial was stunningly beautiful. I also took pictures of many beautiful tombstones They had lovely scriptures and sentiments and lots of symbolism from Victorian era on the tombstones. As a matter of fact, if you look up some of that before you go, you will enjoy the experience even more.

Wonderful in a cemetery way - so many old and interesting sights.

By ewh410 |

Free, and you can drive around - so cool! It's a hilly area, and should be one-way roads. So beautiful, overlooking the James River. So many very old graves and monuments from the Civil War, and others too. It's in a sketchy part of town, but well worth the visit. It's a 15 fast-paced, or 30-45 minute gentler paced drive. Walking around would take an hour or two - probably a nicer way to take in the peace, sadness, and majesty.

great historic visit

By 34Darlin |

My daughter has recently married and moved to Richmond and on my first visit she took me to the cemetery which was truly incredible with history beyond any thing other than Normandy!! Richmond is full of wonderful history! Go visit

Beautiful Cemetery

By KK78 |

A beautiful cemetery to take a drive through. Saw many people walking and actually having a picnic along the river and saw some deer. Two presidents are buried here, along with thousands of soldiers.

Much more than a cemetery

By mammoth50 |

Despite 100 degree weather and high humidity was time well spent. More like a park than a graveyard. Foliage adds to the beauty and charm of the monuments of the dearly departed. From families to Generals and Presidents. Great beauty and history here. Hill top view of Richmond and the James River.

Mesmerizing!

By jeandJ1295JB |

Visited this cemetery in search of great grandmother's burial plot. When I stopped by the office first, the lady at the desk was so helpful! She not only looked up the location, she gave me all the burial info and a map of the cemetery, the directions to go straight to my inquiry and then also pointed out the history of the famous burials of US Presidents there. Also the views from the cemetery that overlooks the James River was breathtaking!

A Magical place in Richmond

By Robb M |

It may sound a bit morbid to some but strolling through Hollywood cemetery is truly magical. While there is tons of history amongst the headstomes there is a view of the James River that is breathtaking.
What a wonderful place to enjoy an impromptu picnic or spend time in reflection.

Just Beautiful!

By audawallace |

What a beautiful place to visit. So many ornate headstones and touching tributes to people's loved ones. So fascinating and old. The James River runs below and the grassy hills are lined with winding roads, so you don't have to get out of the car, if you don't want to, but it really is a wonderful place to walk.

Give Yourself Lots of Time

By Hank and Bonnie H |

We spent a couple of hours driving around getting out, and taking in this cemetery. We were especially interested in the Civil War areas. It's sobering to think of all the people who lost their lives, some so very young, in the war.

Perfect place to picnic and wonder about

By rareathlete |

Once upon a time cemeteries used to play more of a dual purpose in our society. They served both as a place for burial and as a place of recreation. People used to go, pack a lunch, and spend the afternoon at the cemetery using it as a park or a place for social gatherings. Hollywood cemetery has the feeling of a place where you could meander around for days. The setting is gorgeous with the huge old trees, rolling hills, and views of the river. It truly is one of the most beautiful cemeteries I've ever been in.

Cycling through Virginia history

By durontw2016 |

You are allowed to cycle through this Richmond treasurer. Noteable names from Virginia’s past and beautiful views of the James River and downtown Richmond

Thrilling and relaxing at the same time!

By Avishek Mazumdar |

If you are in Richmond area pls visit Hollywood Cemetery. It has the views, the silence, sound of the wind and an absokute chilling ambience to feel the atmosphere.

Beautiful cemetery

By RandS_TX |

I am on a journey to visit all of the President's graves. This site has Tyler and Monroe. They were very easy to find and fitting tributes. Equally impressive was Davis circle that had Jefferson Davis and many of his relatives. The grounds were lovely and it was easy to get around. Download the map from their website.

Blown away by the enormity

By ChristineR1995rn |

First let me say we didn't have time to do the whole tour but we drove around for 30 min and could've easily gotten lost but was able to find the 2 Presidents sites as well as the Confederate officers section and Jefferson Davis. It's just beside the James river and is so gorgeous!!!! I will be going back

See something new and social distance

By Hashbaugh84 |

The weather was crappy so we decided to check out the cemetery and drive around since our two young boys were tired. Glad we did. It was really beautiful. Neat to see the flag ship graves. Worth the trip. Our 4 and 6 year olds enjoyed the abbreviated quick 30+ minute drive through we did on a rainy day.

Lovely

By DKVeteran |

A wonderful, relaxing place for a walk on a sunny day and some interesting historic monuments on site. Worth the visit!

Beautiful Setting

By 86MissyJ |

We visited the graves sites of President Monroe, President Tyler and Jefferson Davis. Amazing that there are two Presidential gravesites within 20 feet of each other. Beautiful view of the James River from the cemetery, it is a nice spot to see history.

Beautifully landscaped historic cemetery

By PKS100 |

This was an unexpected gem on my trip to Richmond to visit my daughter. There was a lot of walking which we found great, but if you're not mobile skip the walking tour. The monuments, the history and landscaping were all worth the trip. Our tour guide shared some great unknown historical facts about Virginia, the Confederate Soldiers buried here as well as Jefferson Davis and two U.S. Presidents. Highly recommended trip with this lovely walk through history.

Fabulous Place to Visit

By CMDA |

Hollywood cemetery is the 2nd most visited cemetery after Arlington. It was named “Hollywood” due to the abundance of holly trees long long before Hollywood in CA was ever thought of. Visit the Presidential Circle and see grave sites of Presidents Monroe and Tyler, Davis Circle with Jefferson Davis and Family , Confederate Memorial. Pickett and JEB Stuart are buried there with other Confederate notables. View the James River from Palmer Chapel . You can drive thru or walk.
Highly recommend...worth your time.

Historical resting place

By shiredweller50 |

As Historical cemeteries go, this one is pretty intetesting. It lacks the ability to stir the emotions like those in Normandy, or the glitz and glamour of the various Forest Lawn cemeteries in LA, but for a who's who of Virginia history it's pretty impressive. US Presidents and key figures of the Confederacy are the most recognizable names, but it's also possible to learn about people of whom you previously knew absolutely nothing.

HIstoric cemetery

By r b |

Park like cemetery with great views of the James River. History with every step. Explore and wonder delving into the past.

Beautiful, historically important cemetery

By Cheri D |

This is a very nice, large, and beautiful cemetery. It is named after the abundance of holly trees there. We did have a tour with a guide who met us there and it was excellent. He drove us around and stopped at various locations of importance. First, there are both Union and Confederate soldiers who are buried here. Presidents John Tyler and James Monroe are buried here as well as Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy. The cemetery overlooks the James River and Bell Isle, beautiful views. We were told that it is an excellent place to go birding. We would have needed the whole day to walk around and appreciate the whole cemetery.

Lovely historic place

By Alice M |

Took a little side trip to this lovely cemetery which is beautiful and very well maintained. A little difficult for walking if hills are challenging but a equally beautiful place to drive through

Richmond must see

By Travelfun |

135 acres of acres of a beautiful resting place on the edge of the James River in downtown Richmond. Two U. S. Presidents along with so many Confederate soldiers. There is parking near the middle of the cemetery not far from the Presidents Circle which cuts down on the long walk from the entrance. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Richmond.

Great place to visit history and witness the love of family members. Some of the prettiest and most unique headesign stones I have ever seen. It is a great walk and there are tours available.

Awesome if just for the view of Richmond.

By Kev E |

Really interesting cemetery and like most in the US we were able to drive around and make stop - offs. Couple of important folks buried here and a few generals too so well worth the visit (45 mins/hour more than enough) but worth it just for the view of the river and downtown from the Jefferson Davies memorial.

Historic beautiful cemetery

By Kyle S |

Located on a buff overlooking the James River, the cemetery was alive with flowering tress and whispered tales of past lives well lived. We visited the graves of Presidents Monroe and Tyler as well as the resting place of Jefferson Davis . The tour guide was friendly and informative.

Nice location!

By Jodi P |

We spent much longer than expected driving through this cemetery. It sits on the edge of a bluff overlooking the river. There are a couple of Presidents buried here along with many Confederate soldiers. It was pretty and interesting.

Presidents and Confederate soldiers

By Lisa w |

We took a guided "golf cart" tour of the Cemetery, which allowed my 93 yr old father to see the entire grounds. The graves of Presidents Monroe and Tyler were impressive as was the monument for Confederate President Davis. A highlight is the Pyramid for Confederate Soldiers as well as the Iron Dog, which according to legend was moved to the cemetery to avid being melted down during the Civil War.

Hollywood Cemetery Trip

By tmrringo |

Very cool a trip worth taking. Drive through stop when you like the place is huge ++! Have gps to get you back out. It’s a great tour through old cemetery with civil war makers and crips throughout. Very peaceful and worth doing as part of a Richmond visit.

Beautiful Historic Cemetery

By JustUs89 |

Lovely historic cemetery. Jefferson Davis is buried here, as well as Fitzhugh Lee. Two U.S. presidents are buried here as well. The cemetery is beautifully maintained. We had the surprise of seeing a man dressed as a confederate soldier walking his dog through cemetery.

Amazing History and Incredible Views

By Mota N |

After decades of living in Virginia, visited Hollywood Cemetery. It did not disappoint.

Besides being the burial place of 2 Presidents, there are a number of notable people buried here. And just the sights of all the different gravestones is fascinating.

What was an expected treat was the picturesque views of the James River from the cemetery grounds. Truly worth lots of photographs.

Old and interesting cemetery in a hilly setting along the James

By Leesgirl |

My family and I went to Hollywood Cemetery looking for a particular grave, that of Colonel Charles Hancock Reed, who was instrumental in freeing Lipizzaner mares from captivity on the German/Czech border. We found a map online and determined the general area where Reed was buried and went hunting. It turns out that had we paid a bit more attention we would have found it by noticing the two small American flags planted at the corners of his gravestone, and the figurine of a Lipizzaner horse placed at the base of one of the flags. Pretty cool!
This cemetery is quite hilly with winding roads from where you can observe an interesting variety of tombs and tombstones, some embellished with hovering angels, dogs, even a child reading a book. Recommended if you are a lover of history or sprawling old cemeteries.

History Abounds

By Kuvasz1988 |

Within a short walk Presidents Tyler and Monroe are buried! A beautiful location overlooking the river. The entire cemetery is beautiful and full of historical figures including Confederate President Jeff Davis.

A lot of History

By Don P |

You can ride through the Cemetery, stop anytime and visit all the gravesites. So much history, and it's all free.

Many dignitaries buried here.

By sandyknitwit |

Make sure you get a guide before touring this cemetery so you don't miss any of the highlights..."the dog," Confederate generals and unknowns, and 2 U.S. Presidents are worth seeing.

Beautiful and historical

By Sparx770 |

Hollywood Cemetery is a beautiful, winding walk through history. The paved road is hilly, but there is a lot of shade as well as places to rest.

Commemorating those who have passed on

By Jeffry b |

Richmond was the capital of the Confederacy. Much of the Civil War, especially towards the end, was fought in Virginia. The 90 feet (27 meter) high granite obelisk commemorates the 18,000 Confederate soldiers interred in the Hollywood Cemetery. James Monroe and John Tayler, who served as presidents of the United States, are also buried here. The grave of Jefferson Davis, the only president of the Confederate States, can be found here, as can those of 28 Confederate generals. The cemetery adjoins Oregon Hill and overlooks the celebrated James River, site of the first successful British colony in North America. The tranquil cemetery has rolling hills, trees and meandering paths.

Notable and interesting, but get a guide

By cjyap |

I didn't take a tour, nor did I find where we could get a map, so I know I could have gotten more out of this cemetary. It is lovely, and there are many important people who have been buried here. Googling for info helped me find the President's Circle. It is large, so having an idea of where you want to go is a good idea before you start walking. I only gave it three stars due to the lack of my preparation, not the attraction.

An amazing 17th Century to current cemetery. Beautiful and historic.

By Mark V |

If you are into history, this is a must see. If you are offended by a certain history between 1860-1864, this may not be for you. If you are willing to take in a 16th century cemetery, along with all the amazing monuments, two Presidents, and an amazing wealth of history, it is for you. It doesn't hurt that it is beautiful rolling hills with woods and the sound of the river below. You can spend all day walking around in wonder.

Absolutely Beautiful

By The Jeff fam |

This cemetery is absolutely beautiful!! You can drive through it (be sure to know how to get out) or get out and walk. The grounds are beautiful and well kept, the tombs, gravestones, etc. are beautiful. There is a ton of history, the landscaping is wonderful, and there is a beautiful view of the city and river depending on where you are. You can cycle through, jog through, etc. It is one of the most beautiful cemeteries I've ever visited. Loved it!!!!

Beautiful Cemetery

By Amie G |

This cemetery is enormous. Thank goodness for the blue line on the road that we could follow otherwise we totally would have gotten lost. The pdf map on the website was essential as the office wasn't open for us to pick up a paper copy, if that was even an option. The rolling hills and the incredible views make this cemetery really stand out from others I have visited. The memorials are outstanding, from the many Confederate soldiers with their identical headstones to the tall obelisks and intricately carved headstones throughout the cemetery. I would definitely visit again.

Historic Cemetery

By Diane K |

My husband and I did a self guided driving and walking tour thru the cemetery with the map provided at the entrance. It was easy to find the historic people laid to rest here: James Monroe, John Tyler, and Jefferson Davis are most notable. But the Pyramid of granite in memory of the 18000 confederate soldiers was truly most moving. Lovely hilly place with interesting old trees and beautiful view of the James River. We spent about an hour meandering around.

Historic

By Tracy S |

Beautiful, historic cemetery. We drove through on our own and had no trouble finding important graves. The cemetery also provides beautiful views and photo opportunities for the skyline and James River.

Beautiful old cemetery and so easy to drive around and look at all of the crypts & tombs!!

By Stephanie D |

My friends, and I recently spent an hour or so here, driving through the cemetery and looking at all of the mausoleum’s and grounds. It is just beautiful and that we picked up from the main office was very helpful.

Great Place to schedule a Segway outing.

By Steve S |

I've been on a couple Segway outings here and the view us fantastic - overlooking the James River and full of history

Time to reflect!

By arnoldnm |

Although I live outside Richmond on a farm and a house built circa 1790, I often drive into Richmond. On occasion, I head in early to insure I make my destination on time. Happily, if I find myself early, or my appointment ends early, I often head to Hollywood Cemetery to cool my heels, or center my mind. The cemetery itself is located in a quiet neighborhood and high on a bluff adjacent to the north bank of the James River. Those buried here represent the entire spectrum of Virginia families: many well above my pay grade, famous for their politics, philanthropy, industry and dedication to this cause, or that. Some sites hold several generations, other but one personage known to but a few, if any. Here to you will find the final resting place of Jefferson Davis, the last President of the Confederacy. The drive through takes you up one seemingly endless tree lined lane to another, but always leading you back to the stone house at the main gate. Once again you are back to present day Richmond safe in the knowledge Hollywood Cemetery will be there for you to take a temporary rest among it’s many externals.

Drove around

Amazing how ginormous this cemetery is. It is quite the site to see. Easy to get lost in if you don’t pay attention

This is a very old Cemetery and is the final resting place of many historical individuals. It is a great place to discover where some of these folks are interned and to say you've actually been to their burial site.

A historic cemetery

By harryatkck |

This has the graves of 2 US presidents & several notable Civil War figures. It is well maintained & the monuments are stately. I used the map on the web site to navigate the cemetery, but found many streets were not on the map. I wish I had stopped by the office & bought the paper map for $1. Allow an hour or 2 to see this place. I got a late start & had to leave before I saw everything. If I am ever in Richmond again, I will come back.

Serene, Peaceful, Beautiful, Old, Historic

By JillnDallas |

We were amazed at the sheer size and beauty. Quiet, peaceful, yet full of life with visitors, joggers, cyclists, people sitting under trees & on benches reading or just meditating or praying. A must visit! Beautifully maintained.

Not all that great

By brcrow33 |

Our guide ended our tour 30 minutes early. We later learned he had to “be somewhere else”. We ended up waiting 30 minutes for our friends who were in the order car and who got to he whole tour. We were also told by our driver that there were only two Presidents buried there when it seems from other reviewers that there were more.

Trees, views, hills--and graves

By LuAnn O |

Lovely place to wander, even hike, around. Like an arboretum with so many huge trees. There are great views of the river and the city with some benches to sit and enjoy. We saw some of the more interesting graves including the huge pyramid for Confederate soldiers and Monroe and Tyler's graves.

Great visit with teenagers

By Lee W |

We all loved driving through this cemetery rich in history and overlooking the James River. Definitely worth the visit! Be sure to find the graves of Presidents Monroe and Tyler. You’ll also find Jefferson Davis further back.

An old cemetery

By RaleighNCtravel |

We rode through on a rainy Saturday. We did not see how to obtain a map so could not find any of the key graves. There are many different styles and monuments. We also saw 5 deer, near the road. It is just another old cemetery unless you have a map.

Amazing

By Lydia W |

Amazing cemetery. Would be nice to have maps and better marking to find your way around. So peaceful. Amazing views. Need a full day at least to get through it.

Take the Tour!

By meowgal |

We reserved the motorized tour and we're not disappointed! Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and made the whole tour interesting with his tidbits of quirky info!

Nice setting

By cordyroy |

We drove around the cemetery and were expecting something a little more of a grand scale. Very pretty setting and well cared for. President Monroe's Memorial was very nice. Don't make a special trip.

Gem Car tour, excellent1

By Anita B |

Our family of 3, with our 19 year old son enjoyed our gem car tour. Tour guide was very informative. Learned a lot of things that I had not heard before. I will forever look at cemeteries differently now. I will notice more of the details that were pointed out in the tour. Beautiful grounds, trees and flowers. Glad we went, highly recommend this tour.

Historic Cemetery

By TravelingSoccerLoon |

Sprawling historic cemetery well worth a visit if visiting Richmond. Final resting place of Presidents James Monroe and John Tyler and the President of the Confederacy Jefferson Davis among many others. Some very nice views of the James River and Downtown Richmond as well.

A walk thru history

By SeadooSue |

You can walk or drive, depending on the weather, through this beautiful, hilly historic cemetery. It is moving to see the graves of so many Confederate soldiers and of presidents and generals. The best part is the view of the James River at the back of the cemetery. There was supposed to be a map at the entrance but we never found it. We did find a map online

Just okay

By beth ann k |

We visited on a weekend, and the visitor center was not open. It was a little hard to find graves, because it's so big. It's very nice though, and I'm glad we stopped.

Well worth visiting

By Bruce014 |

My wife and I were driving west from the Outer Banks, and decided to visit Richmond. Hollywood Cemetery was a great introduction to the city. We did the 10am-noon Valentine guided tour led by Kathy. She was outstanding! Besides the two US presidents, Jefferson Davis and numerous Civil War soldiers’ graves, she pointed out unusual memorials like the bronze Newfoundland dog by a two-year-old’s grave. The cemetery is beautifully landscaped and has stunning flowering trees and bushes. Highly recommended.

Tour guide was delightful!

By LD B |

We had a fun and informative tour through the entire grounds by a well informed and delightful guide.

Interesting Cemetary

By dguern1 |

I love cemeteries and this one boasts many historical figures - presidents and such. We went on a weekend. I highly recommend going during the week as there are tours. Many of the sites are difficult to find (Jefferson & Madison) based on the maps. It was a fun walk and drive through it. We did find all of the sites. We spent about 4 hours total here.

Worth seeing

By rialou116 |

Our friends added this to a list of places to visit while we had a reunion in Richmond and glad that we took the time to see it. Very impressive and serene. Would highly recommend.

VERY NICE CEMETERY

By chad y |

Jefferson Davis, James Monroe and John Polk are also in this cemetery. You can walk or drive through.

Beauty and History abound in Hollywood!

By Rebecca Logan |

Since my husband and I visit Presidential Homes and Museums, this was a natural place to visit because of Presidents Circle, where several Presidents are buried, also Jefferson Davis. This is the second most visited cemetery in the country, Arlington is obviously the first. It's called Hollywood because of the many Holly Trees. The place is beautfiully landscaped, with great walking, and is pet friendly. We opted for a guided tour and are thankful we did. Mr. Butterfield is a knowledgable gentleman with a love of history He drove us around in a cool electric UTV that is roadworthy. We had ample opportunities to get out, walk and take photos. This cemetery has some of the best views in Richmond! I also throroughly recommend buying the book, "Famous Residents in Hollywood Cemetery" which provides biographical sketches. This is still a burial spot today, and a service was happening when we were there. However, it did not effect our tour. This is a MUST SEE!

Visiting family and friends

By clayhamner |

Anyone living in Richmond should visit this cemetery and take a tour. The history here is unequaled with monuments to US presidents, victims of the War of Northern Aggression, and locals. The paths are beautiful and the grounds are immaculate. If possible, take a Segway tour.

History on Wheels

By leadkat |

I have to say that one of the best ways to see the Hollywood Cemetery is on a guided tour on a Segway. A guided tour either thru Richmond's local Segway company or even a walking tour with the Valentine Museum are great ways to explore this historical cemetery and get all the details that you will not get by driving on your own.

Serene and overlooks the rocky James River

By CleopatraBunny |

We came here to find Jefferson Davis' gravesite as part of our civil war history tour, and enjoyed slowly driving around to see not only his grave, but the views from the rolling hillsides out towards the rocky James River. What a peaceful place to visit!

Great place and very friendly security staff

By 770MCP |

Stopped after hours to see jefferson davis' grave. Well we were attempting to walk to it but a nice guard told us she could take us but we had to leave after that. She was looking for another car so she had to drive around the park looking. We found the grave and took our pictures and headed back. The guard was great. She did us a big favor. Thank you.

This is a MUST SEE when in Richmond!

By Carrie L |

There are some really famous families/people buried in Richmond's Famous Hollywood Cemetery so it is a must see. The monuments and sculptures are amazing! I really recommend you bring a camera and if you are into rubbings, wax paper and crayons for creating some one of the kind marker rubbings! This cemetery dates back to the 1700s which is amazing! It is also VERY HILLY so either wear good walking shoes or plan to drive. Driving is doable but it is super tight! And just as a side note: hate or love the confederacy we are the capitol so there are a lot of War Veterans buried here but I can tell you the place is a must see. In the very back you can also see a beautiful picture perfect view of the famous James River which runs through our beautiful city.

Historic Celebrities

By kudzutn04 |

The drive thru the rolling hills and vistas of this cemetery is worth the visit. Added to this, there is a map ($1) that points out the historic burials, including JEB Stuart, Jeff Davis, George Pickett, Pres. Polk, and the decorative “grave house”/ monument for Pres. James Monroe (his wife has a flat metal plate next to it. )
There are short walks to several sites. We would totally recommend this stop.

Beautiful Cemetery

By beccapaige4483 |

This is a beautiful cemetary along the banks of the James River. Walkimg through and admiring the interesting tombstones and monuments is a must

Worth the Visit

By dsmith676 |

I have lived in Richmond my entire life. I always take out of town visitors to this very historic and beautiful cemetery. There are many famous people buried here and many unusual tombstones. It also has a beautiful view of the river.

The cemetery is beautiful with windy small roads that go up and down hills. Many large trees can be found throughout the cemetery.

You will not be disappointed

Fun place to visit.

By egg343 |

I really enjoy driving through the cemetery. It is a living history lesson. It is fun to try and find the graves of the presidents buried there. It is a very tranquil place.

A Lesser Known Site for History Buffs

By Tabitha S |

This large cemetery has some major historical figures buried here (Confederate President) as well as some quirky spots. Nice location right next to the river too. We even brought the kids and they enjoyed it too.

Beautiful, peaceful place

By Dean W |

This cemetery is well worth a visit. Final home of two US presidents, a confederate president and, some say, a vampire. It's a very beautiful, peaceful place (unless of course you come across the vampire) and an hour or so strolling around is highly recommended.

A nice way to spend some time, driving around, taking in all the monuments.

By LEIGH-ANN52 |

My husband and I found this very interesting. It was well maintained with paved roads and many unique monuments.

Both Great Beauty And Historical Associations

By ElaineAndGreg |

Hollywood Cemetery is a proverbial gem just outside of downtown Richmond. It sits on a large hill overlooking the James River. It houses the graves of U.S. Presidents James Monroe and John Tyler, as well as Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

Richmond was, of course, the capital of the Confederacy. The cemetery has the remains of something like 19,000 confederate soldiers, as well as George Pickett (of Picket's charge fame at Gettysburg), Jeb Stuart, and three of James Longstreet's children who died during the war. More recently, it also has the grave of former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Lewis F. Powell, Jr.

Physically, the cemetery feels like a large, well-landscaped park. There are winding roads and walkways. Even if you are not interested in the historic aspects, the cemetery is very attractive and there are some great views of the river, particularly from President's Circle (where the graves of Madison and Tyler are).

Here are a few tips:

1. Stop at the office just inside the main entrance and pay a dollar for a map. It's very well worth it and the nice person inside will help you if you are interested in something in particular.

2. The map has a blue line suggested route, which is pretty good. But here's the cool part: they have painted a blue line on the roads to make it easier to follow the routes. While there is some signage, all of the roads kind of wind around the hills and valleys of the part and it's easy to get off the past. Watch for the blue line and it will help you stay on track.

3. Note on the map that some of the roads appear in white and some in green. The white ones are where you can drive. Green roads are solely for walking. This is particularly important around President's Circle, which is strictly walking, although It is only 50 yards or so from the nearest road or parking. The walks are very well made.

4. There are small parking lots near the primary attractions. It is easy to park around Davis Circle (where Jefferson Davis is buried). There are also nice views from this location.

Wow - surprised at the size of it.. massive!

By Isabel S |

Wow! The cemetery is huge. I had seen some photos on the internet and decided to visit. Far exceeded expectations. The first day I walked.. only saw a small amount. The 2nd day I drove...far bigger than I expected and never saw all of it either. Was suprised on the 2nd day to see a mass of graves outside the perimeter. Very well kept, very interesting and very dignified.

Beautiful, amazing..

By teknoge3k |

My wife and I drove 3 hours to Richmond to see this historic cemetery. This is the second most visited cemetery in the United States, only behind Arlington. My wifes great great great great grandfather was killed in Pickett's charge in Gettysburg. Last year we went to Gettysburg to walk those footsteps and see the battlefields. This weekend we went to see the final resting place of Pickett and all of his men that were recovered. This is a very somber place to be but has a lot of Confederate history. We also saw the graves of the 2 Presidents as well as Jefferson Davis, and J.E.B. Stuart. If you are into the battle at Gettysburg, like Gettysburg, or know anything about the CSA then I highly recommend going here. We went twice over the weekend and spent hours. Also a very special thanks to the security guard who helped us find what we were looking for, only on his second day on the job.

Also to the vandals who destroyed the tombs of the dead, you suck and I hope karma gets you.

Lovely stroll. Much history

By Karen K |

Sandy was a fun tour guide. Well-informed. Entertaining. Kept a great pace and kept me interested for 90 minutes which is not easy to do!! I’m from the North, so learning the history of prominent southern families was new to me. Of course, I also enjoyed seeing the presidential burial sights. I would recommend this walking tour for the history and the beautiful river views!

Nice Place to Visit But wouldn't want to Stay

By Rieger153 |

We went on the 90 minute electric vehicle ride. The car was designed for four guest but they overbooked and we had five. Three people had to sit in the back row designed for two. The cemetery was full of interesting monuments and history. The guide was ok but she didn't know a lot of detail. I think that I would have been better off driving myself with a guide book in hand. Worth the visit.

Beautiful

By Hannah K |

I wish the navigation was a bit easier, but this is the most beauitful cemetery I've ever seen. It takes a while to get to Jefferson Davis's tomb, so try not to second-guess yourself if you've missed your turn!

Lovely, please allow lots of time for this.

Amazing guided tour

By DebbieW |

Our group of 26 had a guided tour by Kathy Whittington today. It was a beautiful, cool day as we were led through the cemetery. Kathy shares a wealth of knowledge about the various aspects of the park/garden/cemetery. It is truly a wonderful place to spend time in.
I'm not sure how much information you get if you do it on your own. I have always been with a tour and highly recommend that.

Fascinating

By JGB |

Very interesting. We used the interactive map from the website and had a great self guided tour, stopping to read about the various people buried here and their history. We drove, as it was a bit more walking then we wanted to do, but there were lots of walkers. The electric car option looked like fun, but we hadn’t booked ahead. Lots of photo opportunities. Really worth a visit. I also enjoyed reading more about the cemetery after our visit.

Its actually very cool!

By Brad T |

It's beautiful, historic and has one of the absolute best river views in the city. We took the RVA TukTuk and it was the ideal way to see the cemetary. For Walkers its a great way to enjoy your walk. Yes enjoy a Cemetary.

Never imagined this place was so big...

By Robin P |

I have been wanting to go to Hollywood Cemetery for some time now and decided to enjoy on a Sunday afternoon. Not really knowing what to expect, I was completely blown away by how many people were about as well as how large the cemetery is. You can drive around, take a Segway tour, enjoy a guided walking tour, or take it in on foot with the virtual tour provided on the website. I had purchased a book from the Historical Society several years ago and it was so HELPFUL with lots of fun and interesting facts. My husband and dog (yes, there were lots of dogs...bring own poop bags) walked around with me for over 2 hours and we only covered a small portion but I learned so much. Tons of history here!! Being on a bluff above the James River made for great views and the river was really running today so you could take in the rapids and we even saw some rafters and kayakers enjoying the waters. There are restrooms at the main gate and parking throughout the cemetery. I will definitely be back for another visit. Highly recommend.

Historic Richmond Virginia

By BobHxxx |

Hollywood Cemetery is one of the first garden cemeteries in the U.S. The cemetery is the residing place of historic figures such as Presidents and civil war dead. The old monuments containing statuary and angels are unique. Other figures such as a lead dog standing over a little girl's grave are said to move at times. A very unique and scenic place to visit.

A Nice Side Trip

By Neal J |

We toured the Hollywood Cemetery based on recommendations. The walk and/or drive around the cemetery is a nice way to get a glimpse at the people who are buried there. I recommend that you purchase a map of the cemetery before arriving. They don't have maps there. They have a "blue" line that matches the route on the map for prominent people interred there. They should put up a sign that tells people which way one should drive. It is worth taking an hour of your time (or more if you chose to walk).

Amazing stuff, but I got so lost!

By Marykay K |

The large cemetery in Richmond peaked my interest both historically and artistically. It's a good thing I had a GPS to get there! When I first arrived, I managed to find a parking place in the front of the cemetery. I went to what I assumed was the office, but it was locked. Later I was told by someone who knew, that the office is closed on the weekends. IDK if that meant just on Sunday, or the whole weekend. There was a large map near the parking the showed where "notable gravesites" were located. You could either follow the blue or red line. That wasn't terribly helpful as it is faded on parts of the road. Part of the way, there are also arrow signs for the red line, but by then I was heartily confused. First suggestion -- Print your own copy of the map off line.

There were a fair amount of people and cars in the area, someone was even walking a training service dog in the area. Nice walk. But, just in case you thought all these folks were there to see the cemetery, the majority of them were busy glancing at their phones playing "Pokemon Go!"

The cemetery is amazing and sobering. The pyramid monument to the Confederate soldiers that died is huge. Hollywood is the resting place for a few hundred of the soldiers who died during the Civil War and even that was sobering, many stones engraved w/ only the names of deceased and their company during the war.

Stones from the past couple of centuries, carved w/ names, topped w/ crosses, draped urns or statues invoke the memory of those long dead. Actually, this is still an active cemetery and some burials are quite recent.

Also buried on this site are President Tyler, President Monroe and Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy. Finding where the presidents were resting was difficult. A kind couple of Pokemon hunters gave me a spare map and I eventually stumbled upon President's Circle, where the 2 former US Presidents rest.

I was interested in the place as a whole, but after 2/ 1/2 hours of wandering around and seeing so many people's stones, I was ready to see the Presidents and leave. The skies were looking ominous and it started to rain. While I did eventually see their resting places, I have to say, the photos already enclosed w/ this listing made them seem much larger. Monroe's is striking w/ its white wrought iron and nestled in a grove of trees.

This place is definitely worth seeing. Just be sure you had a good amount of time, water and a map. I went thru the cemetery in my car and stopped at many places, passing thru the stones. I don't think the car or segway tours that are offered would allow you to see the carvings nestled in among the thousands of stones that cover the hills. Or, to share the sadness of seeing many stones with little lambs or angels carved on them, that remind that we live in a miracle age of vaccinations, antibiotics and low infant mortality.

A classic Richmond Visit

By bythetracks |

This was an unexpected high point. We went because the US Presidents Monroe and Tyler are at rest there. The cemetery is privately owned and operated. They do a tremendous job mowing, cleaning and maintaining it. The place is very well cared for and a jewel for Richmonders to be proud of.

It overlooks the rapids on the James river, offering a beautiful view and a great walk thru history from the 1840s onward. Free to enter open during daylight hours, there’s a restroom and a map for an historic walking tour.

So glad I took the time to visit.

By Seri B |

Beautiful peaceful - overlooks the James River.
Buy the $2 map at the office at the entrance-only open on weekdays!

Then follow the blue line on the roadway and you'll easily find "Presidents' Circle" for Presidents Monroe and Tyler, and "Davis Circle" for Jefferson Davis and family burial site. (If you go on the weekend, just follow the blue line on the right side of the road and you'll get to all the important places.

Don't miss "The Pyramid", the monument to thousands of Confederate soldiers. The headstones around it for the dead Confederate soldiers reminded me of Arlington.

So glad I took the time to visit.

We went here on a weekend, not busy at all.It was interesting to see where a couple of our Presidents are buried, and the pyramid dedicated to the 18,000 confederate soldiers. You can take a guided tour or just stroll thru on your own. There's alot of ground to cover so wear comfortable shoes. You can also drive thru as well.
Just get out before dark as urban legend says, the vampire will get you!👿

Monumentally Historical

By Mike K |

Utilize the electric car tour. Worth every dollar.

Without a guide, a visitor is like to miss key gravesites and history

A walking tour would be a major chore. A driving four omits the history that makes the Cemetary unique.

A must visit for history buffs!

History in the Raw

By Sara S |

Great Tour with Jim from Valentine tours!!! It is a walking tour but not to strenuous....you get to see so much and there are 2 president's (Tyler and Monroe) and the Confederate President Jefferson Davis, along with many many others

Interesting but not on my top spots for Richmond.

By Steve S |

Per the summary Hollywood is a Richmond bucket list item but did not live up to the hype. Probably more enjoyable on less hot days.

Quick trip to Richmond

By moseysmelody |

We stopped in Richmond on the way home to check out this cemetary. Hollywood cemetary grounds is beautiful with a beautiful view of the city. The graveyard itself is full of history. I definitely recommend stopping here if you are ever in Richmond!

Beautiful cemetary with a lot of history!

The cemetary was beautiful and well maintained. We went on a Sunday so the office was not open. We could get a map but it was very difficult to read and follow. We finally found President's Circle and that was awesome. The view of the city and river was really nice. Interesting place to visit when in the area.

President Monroe, President Tyler, General George Pickett

By Traveller |

I visited Hollywood Cemetery in October 2023. I drove my car to the Presidential Circle to visit the graves of President Monroe and President Tyler. Then I drove to the Confederate section. The main grave I visited was the grave of General George Pickett. He was known for Pickett’s Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg and also the Battle of Five Forks - the climactic moment of the Battle of Petersburg. I also saw a grave with a statue of a dog and a pyramid honoring women of the confederacy. I hope to return to Hollywood Cemetery next year after I do some more research about who is buried there.

Very neat place!

By Lindsay B |

This cemetery is absolutely amazing. Its huge, so I suggest downloading the map if you want to find the presidents circle. So many cool old tombstones.

You can't believe how big it is!

By moonlitemom |

I live in Richmond and have been here many times. I can never get over how big it is! I would recommend driving through it first to get your bearings and decide where you want to explore. Be aware there is not much parking inside the cemetery itself.

The cemetery is full of beautiful old magnolias and views of the James river "falls", but as far as I know there is no access to the river since you would have to cross railroad tracks and a canal to get there. I have also done the Segway tour which is fun and informative and much easier on your feet!

Fascinating Tour & History Lesson

By Grand-in-VA |

Our hiking group recently did a walking tour in Hollywood Cemetery. Our guide was provided through the Valentine Museum in Richmond and she made this tour! Hollywood is a “garden cemetery” with numerous sections containing beautiful examples of architecture, stone carvings and Richmond’s notable ironworks. Hollywood takes it’s name from the holly trees indigenous to Virginia. As the final resting place to two US Presidents, six VA governors, Confederate officers and soldiers and numerous other state and national notables, one could enjoy more than one day viewing over 170 years of history! If you have the chance, this is a not-to-be missed glimpse into Richmond’s past and present.

Huge Cemetery

By Carrie |

We happened upon this cemetery while on our driving trip to Virginia to see history. It was very well laid out to drive through. They offer a walking tour but it wasn’t opened the time we went.

Heart of Dixie - Southerners Rest In Peace

By Sam D |

The Hollywood Cemetery located at 412 South Cherry Street, Richmond, VA 23220, 804-648-8501, is a 130 acre, off the beaten path venue, that offers good insights since 1849 when opened, to those who have faithfully served the South first and the US nationally according to their views at the time. US Presidents James Monroe and John Tyler and Confederate President Jefferson Davis (see Davis Circle) along with 18,000+“ Johnny Rebs” and thousands of others are buried in the cemetery on the James River with lush foliage, beautiful trees, rolling hills and round and round and up and down paved roads. Be careful, the driving can be tedious. It’s a must visit, park, walk around, study the memorials, tombstones, if you want to explore the Richmond, Virginia, and the Southern culture.
You can do a drive by, park, spend several hours or all day, depending on what perks your interests. The cemetery is open daily 8AM - 6PM, and be sure to exit by 6PM, they do lock the entrance/exit gate. If locked in, it’s a challenge to exit, Enjoy.

Nice place but I wouldn't want to stay there

By Steve I |

Home to several presidents as well as other famous historical figures, it's actually a beautiful place to take a stroll on a nice day. I usually visit it the spring or late fall, when temperatures are more moderate

Spring break

Took a driving tour of this cemetery and found it very informative and interesting. The travel instructions were very helpful and the security guards nice.

History Galore!

By Joan F |

I was fascinated by so much history reflected on the headstones at Hollywood Cemetery. A great place to visit if one is a history buff.

A Somber, Beautiful and Historic Cemetery

By red69hoss |

Certainly one of the very nicest and most historic cemeteries in the U.S. A must for any history buff. The historic gravesites, landscaping and beautiful tombs make for a memorable destination. Two U.S. presidents plus Jeff Davis plus generals Stuart, Pickett and Fitzhugh Lee. Highly recommended.

Worth a couple of hours

By uebelher |

It’s a beautiful setting for a historic cemetery. Definitely worth stopping in to drive around a few key sites.

Worth a visit

By Heidicrnp |

This cemetery is definitely worth a visit. There are some unusual and interesting finds. The views of the James River are spectacular from parts of the cemetery. The monuments are interesting and old. Quite a few well known people are buried here; two former presidents, Jefferson Davis to name a few. There are Sedgway tours if you want to do it a different way. It is a large Confederate burial ground and it is very sad. I would have given it 5 stars if it was advertised that the office is closed on Sundays. Therefore the maps that can be purchased for $1 are not available on Sundays which makes it difficult to tour. Otherwise it is great

By Gayle W |

There are wonderful views from this site of the river and it helps Orient you to the city and how it connects to its River Rivers end communities.

Memento mori

By DOUGLAS G |

If you like walking through old cemeteries, this is a must, with an excellent view of the river. Although not an arboretum, there are some beautiful old trees here and the grounds were very well kept.

Historic Cemetery

By Amber M |

We stopped in Richmond just to go to Hollywood Cemetery. This historic cemetery is a sight to behold. It is breathtaking! While we only able to stay for about an hour, we are planning another visit to stay longer because there are so many graves to see. We did visit the President Circle and saw the birdcage.

Driving tour

By Chuck P |

A well marked driving tour leads you through the winding streets of the cemetery. A quick stop at the office for a map is recommended.
Many important locals are buried here along with presidents, politicians and Civil War personalities.
There are a number of interesting monuments and the diverse scenery attracts your attention.

Interesting Stop

By krissybee1979 |

We really enjoyed stopping here. The cemetery is beautiful and peaceful. Love seeing the old gravesites and a few notable graves.

Nice drive....

By rduinc |

Large cemetery, with many winding roads to follow as you make your way thru this beautiful cemetery. There are a lot of confederate soldiers buried here and in interesting pyramidal shaped stone structure commemorating their lives. We arrived very early in the morning so did not get a tour but will try for that next time.

History, Serenity, and Stunning Vistas

By Chip J |

A wonderful way to take a step back in time, Visit the graves of US Presidents Monroe and Tyler and CSA President Jefferson Davis. Be sure to stop by the 90ft stacked stone pyramid monument to the 18,000 Confederate soldiers buried here. Also, don't miss the Iron Dog, a statue guarding the resting place of little girl buried in 1862. Very drivable, walkable, or if you are adventurous, look into the Segway tours.

Truly amazing

By hookheath |

This is the second most visited cemetery in the country and after we visited, we now know why. Its a tough walk so we suggest you see it by TukTuk. Situated on the hill about the city, looking over the James River location and steeped in history

Rolling, massive cemetery!

By Big_bro_1_usa |

PROS: free, you can pay $1 for a map to find your favorite people in the cemetery. Read the articles at their website before going to orient you about it. Interesting old monuments and mausoleums ! I like the 3 car parking area by the President’s circle.

CONS: the Jefferson Davis monument was under renovation so I was disappointed to not be able to take the pics I wanted.

Drive Some-Walk Some

By Kath_fowler |

We drove the cemetery using the Follow The Blue Line method. But we saw many walking, biking, using skooters. Many convenient pull off parking areas that allow you to explore near your car. Ideal for older or handicapped. Saw so many families walking and biking. Leashed dogs enjoying the smooth pathways and lanes. Beautiful views of the James River. Picturesque and historic cemetery. This was a beautiful historic stop that you don't want to miss. Even if you're not a "Stonewalker" you'll love this cemetery.

A Beautiful and Historic Cemetary

By Mel M |

Hollywood Cemetery if filled with with hills and foliage. This is a beautiful place to walk, ride a bike or drive your car. The headstones are amazing and there are so many historic people buried there. The cemetery also overlooks the James River and tours are occasionally available and worth the time.

Historical last resting place

By Southall S |

One of the great cemeteries of Virginia with it being the burial location of Two US Presidents, monuments to confederate dead, and exceptional monuments for the Richmond famous and not so famous. There are excellent views of the James River which runs to the south of the location. Beautiful mature trees even in the newer sections of the place along with charming statuary sprinkled through the grounds.

Beautiful views of the river and city

By Yellowroses318 |

I love Richmond. Lived there for 9 months. This was one of my favorite places to visit. Great for a walk through and several stunning viewpoints. I love graveyards in general but this one is magical!

Somber and Artistic grounds

By Dewayne P |

I came to visit the graves of a few notable people like presidents Monroe and Tyler, and Civil War generals JEB Stuart and George Pickett. But I ended up staying for take in all of the gorgeous headstones. The cemetery also has a fantastic view of the river and downtown.

Hollywood Cemetery

By lbmullane |

Well marked driving path leads you to the major burial sites. Very touching Davis memorial, with all their young children buried about the memorial circle. Beautifully landscaped cemetery. We didn't take the walking tour -too expensive. So many other graves to learn something from, too. Spend at least two hours to fully appreciate. The stone pyramid with thousands buried there is stunning.

Not a creepy graveyard

By Sue S |

This is a beautifully terraced cemetery with fascinating headstones and stories galore. Stop by the front office and buy the map for $1. It is worth it for the extra information. Plan to visit on a pretty day because, although the cemetery can be walked, it is huge! It is better to follow the map and occasionally park and get out. Beautiful river and city views.

Intriguing

By drmommca |

This cemetery is definitely worth a "ride-through". Many famous persons are buried there, but what makes it charming are the unique tombs, usually of a bygone century.

Wonderful drive!

By SheralTx |

This cemetery is a must. Easy to drive through . Important part of history to see. Plan on an hour to park and walk too.

Glorious and Beautiful

By Paul J |

This cemetery is one of the most lovely I have visited and is truly massive. There are probably no finer views of the James River and a wide range of tombs, tombstones and epitaphs. For those up for a long stroll, follow the blue line on the road so you do not get lost. This will help you cover a great deal of territory and help you see many of the highlights. The only place you should jump off the blue line is at the Presidential Road, but after you visit those two tombs, make your way back out and rejoin the blue line. Just an amazing place.

Amazing History!

By LenEvanston |

Opened in 1847, the cemetery was named due to the large amount of holly trees on-site. I recommend stopping at the office to get a map because some of the street signs are not visible. The famous politicians buried here include Presidents James Monroe and John Tyler. They are buried in the President's Circle (at the top of the hill). Also buried here is Confederate President Jefferson Davis. In the Confederate Section, there are graves of 3,000 solders.

Beautiful cemetery

By Tamzpost |

It sounds strange but Hollywood cemetery is beautiful. You can walk or drive around. The pyramid is very interesting.

just a day out and about.

By oldjeep96 |

I have always found the grounds to well trimed and clean in repest to the many people and families that are laid to rest there.

Touring the city

By lucianacordoba |

It is part of the tour to learn about the history of the city. Presidents of the United States are buried there, which is why it is so important.

Beautiful Cemetery Full of History

By Steve5863 |

This beautiful cemetery located on rolling hills overlooking the James River is the final resting place of Presidents Monroe and Tyler, Jefferson Davis, six Virginia Governors, a number of Confederate Generals, numerous other notables, and hundreds or ordinary people from all walks of life. For a couple of dollars, pick-up a map and guide at the office just inside the entrance and follow the blue line to see the highlights which also include a huge stone pyramid Civil War memorial surrounded by the graves 18,000 Civil War soldiers, many unknown.

Beautiful graveyard with exquisite views

By actranslation |

This cemetery has a lot going for it: the unassuming entrance fools you into thinking it's small, but it is huge, and has a lot in it. We were thinking we would walk it, but ended up taking the car--we recommend you do too.

Two US presidents are in a delightful area; CSA president Jefferson Davis and his family have their own spot (under renovation when we were there), and a Confederate soldiers area, complete with a stunning monument. The presidential graves all have stunning views of the James River and downtown Richmond. If you are offended by Confederate flags, this place may not be for you; it is entirely appropriate that they be here.

Be aware that this is a working cemetery: funerals are a daily occasion and should be shown respect.

Hint: take a picture of the cemetery map at the entrance with your cell phone so you can find your way around.

great park as well as very historic

By pdenn |

Hollywood is a well preserved cemetery and park. It is not only significant for the historic graves and history but it also lovely. The grounds have rolling hills and views of the James River. The tour guides are well trained and informative. It is good for walks, bicycling, and jogging plus a good place for a picnic.

Best place for a contemplative/relaxing walk

By smarks2017 |

Have been many times. Tremendous history to see here, and the views of the river are spectacular. Don't miss it.

History buff and beautiful

Beautiful graveyard

This graveyard was very beautiful old historic so much history. We drove around there’s a lot of hills and we also happened to drive by General Pickett’s grave. Worth the trip.

Beautiful Garden Cemetery

By Goth Gardener |

The original area of the cemetery has a vast collection of ornate, 19th-century funerary monuments throughout with the earliest being carved in white marble in a variety of Classical and Picturesque styles. And of course true to the time there are still some elaborate black iron fences that still remain in the cemetery.

Hollywood is comprised primarily of family lots. Prior to 1861, the cemetery encouraged families to use ornate cast iron fencing, most of which came from a number of Richmond, Baltimore, and Philadelphia foundries. During the American Civil War, many churches gave their iron church bells to the Confederacy to support war efforts. The only place that was considered sacred enough not to remove such iron was the cemetery. After the war, the Hollywood Cemetery Company discouraged and in some cases restricted the use of cast iron, and much of the original cast iron was removed to ease maintenance. The fences that are left are stunning examples of the workmanship of its time.

One popular grave is that of the Rees family which juxtaposes black iron and white marble. You can see a French style cradle marker for a little girl who passed from a common 19th century disease. There are several items that are left on this grave. It’s become a tradition to place coins, rocks and shells, although some leave toys. The part that is intriguing to many visitors is the cast iron dog. This Newfoundland dog was actually the mascot for the Haywood and Bartlett Iron Company of Baltimore. While there are several stories which surround this grave, the dog was most likely placed here during the Civil War so that it wasn’t melted down for ammunition.

Hollywood Cemetery

By Jaden P |

The cemetery that houses the graves of two U.S. Presidents, James Monroe and John Tyler; the Confederate President, Jefferson Davis; and 28 Civil War Generals, including Jeb Stuart and George Pickett, is a beautiful cemetery that is the largest I’ve visited. It is a must see for Civil War history buffs.

One of America's great cemeteries

By GenotheViking |

This is one of the greatest cemeteries in America for history and monuments, Lots of Civil War Stories here and also two US presidents plus Jefferson Davis of the Confederacy, A great walking cemetery and tours are available. Bring your picnic too. Easy to find close to town.

Great place to spend a few hours

By ejl804 |

Remarkably beautiful and peaceful. Each season is different. Very hilly so be in shape. Would walk it or bike it.

Hollywood Cemetery

By Charlene F |

Drove through this amazing place. It is the second most visited cemetery in our country after Arlington. Beautiful, hilly grounds with fantastic array of monuments/headstones. Drive through if short on time, walk it if possible or take a tour. A must see experience.

Tour

By jldp1 |

Tour guide was very informative. Great upkeep of cemetery. Had no idea so many famous people live there permanently.

Full of US history

By Chris J |

The cemetery is fascinating. We downloaded a map online and did our own tour. The entire cemetery is accessible by car. So, if you know which graves you are infestered in, you can get there without walking. That was nice in July! I think I would have enjoyed walking if weather was cooler.

Great stop minimum 1 hour

By Merissa S |

Had a great time driving around the cemetery I would highly recommend getting a map from the office as it points out all of the highlights of the gravestones and people buried there including Confederate soldiers. The stone pyramid was much larger than I expected and an awesome site. Highly recommend the visit if you are in town. I would allow at least one hour if you want to get out and take some pictures for a quick drive through could be 10 to 15 minutes. You can walk it but it's a very long walk I recommend driving.

Wonderful visit

By ryansbrown |

We had a wonderful time exploring and learning about well known people buried there. And the grounds are full of beautiful views and architecture.

Historical names from America’s past

By ROBERT C |

Dr. Hunter Maguire, Stonewall Jackson’s doctor buried here. Many names from political and military leaders are here. The pyramid is quite interesting. Part of it overlooks river.

HUGE.

By Jack L |

The sole purpose of a visit was to view the Confederate memorial. This is a 90 foot high granite pyramid. The blocks are from the James River, which are not bonded, only the weight of the upper blocks hold the structure in place. The pyramid's title is 'To the Confederate Dead'. More than 18,000 confederate soldiers are buried here. The pyramid is located on the edge of a hill, near the southern end of the cemetery.

Down at the base of the hill is the John Marshall High School Cadet War Memorial. Walking up the hill behind this memorial is the 'Gettysburg Hill'. Included is George E. Picket & Dr. Rufus B. Weaver. Dr. Weaver brought back to Virginia over 3,000 confederate soldiers killed at Gettysburg. These soldiers are known as the 'Gettysburg Dead'.

Another civil site is the 1861-1865 Confederate Officers Section, erected October 1918. This site is not included with the other confederate soldiers. I would say on the western border.

This cemetery is the final resting site for U.S. presidents James Monroe & John Tyler. Also southern president Jefferson Davis. I first drove part of the cemetery before walking. An aerial view shows the confederate pyramid toward the south end, that is where I stated walking finding the pyramid in about 10 minutes. Looking for a certain site would be looking for a small pin in a very large hay stack. That is why my title is HUGE. The cemetery is composed of hills, valleys, flat sections & curves.

As I drove around I followed red arrows on a white boards. There tours available, however costly. Speed limit is 15 MPH. How many people are laid to rest I have no idea.

A visit is recommended.

Dead People Tell Tales

By PaoloStatiUniti |

This is one of the most scenic places to get dumped in the dirt in America. For those still above ground you can trace the history of not only Virginia, but the United States, especially the Civil War. All while enjoying great views of the Hollywood Rapids on the mighty mighty James River. Also worth a visit to stroll amongst beautifully sculpted headstones and ancient oaks and magnolias.
Perfect spot for a picnic too.

Walking tour of Hollywood Cemetery

By FromRichmondVA |

This is a great, two hour walking tour of Hollywood Cemetery, organized by the Valentine Museum. Excellent guide. The cemetery has a wonderful and complex history, it is a lovely stroll, and it has some of the very best views of the James and of downtown Richmond. Do it! You can usually just show up at 10:00 am to be on the tour-- but always best to double check schedules on the web.

Hollywood Cemetary - A must see

By Donna H |

It's not about movie stars or film executives, but rather this piece of property houses some very influential people in Richmond's history. You'll notice familiar names of Union and Confederate Generals and other high ranking commanders. Headstones also reflect those individuals representing the upper tiers of the Richmond socio-economic scenes back in the day. It's a pure marvel, the shape and scope of headstones and markers. It's a must see for any history buff or those like me, who have resting relatives.

So much U.S. history gathered together all in one place, SIMPLY JAW DROPPING

By jefferyp2017 |

So much U.S. history gathered together all in one place, SIMPLY JAW DROPPING, I can't find any other words to describe this awesome cemetery in Richmond. Our recent Civil war themed bus group tour did not include Hollywood Cemetery on their itinerary, so when we received some free time we called a cab and off to this beautiful cemetery we did go. Only problem was we only had an hour or so and our cab would not go on the grounds, he dropped us off at the gate and said call when your done. I had my printed map so off we went. Two hours and several miles of uphill walking later, we were able to see all the main sites and pretty much all the history I was hoping to see, it was great. The dark side of our visit, which angered me a bit, was all of the people in their cars, hundreds of them, driving around like mindless zombies with their faces glued to their phones navigating their way throughout the cemetery on their downloaded maps, not even getting out of their cars to pay respect, which gave this place an almost circus like atmosphere, its like something got lost in the translation, don't these people know this is a cemetery not an amusement park, but you wouldn't know it to see all the zombies, I was embarrassed at their behavior. To sum it all up, this was the most impressive place on our trip and at the same time its here I felt the most ashamed of the society of zombies we have become. SAD

Presidential burial place

By RKordziel |

Huge cemetery! I visited to find the graves of James Monroe, John Tyler and Jefferson Davis. The latter of which I found thanks to an extremely helpful Cemetery employee. This is one of three places that has multiple presidents buried there-along with Arlington National Cemetery (Taft & Kennedy) and United First Parish Church (John and John Quincy Adams).

History awaits

By NanaMarlin |

There are a lot of famous people here including Benjamin Franklin and his wife. Does famous in the military have their grave sites denoted with small America flag for easy identification. A real gem!

A Treasure of History

By HealerTraveler |

I remember being a grad student and sometimes taking my lunch to Hollywood Cemetary to feel the peace of the place in between hectic classes and life. The breathtaking overlooks of the river, the amazing history, the President's Circle, the Civil War history, and all manner of mausoleums, artistic statues, and fascinating gravestones are all part of the charm. It's extremely well-maintained, too. This is a must to see.

An historical perspective

By TrainingTravelBob |

When I first moved to Richmond, everyone told me I needed to visit Hollywood Cemetery, which seemed odd to me -- a cemetery as a tourist attraction? But, given the historical figures that call this "home," it really can be an interesting experience. In addition, the grounds are beautiful, with striking river and city views from behind the "chapel"- like building on one of the outer roads inside the cemetery, near the riverfront. Just be aware that the inside roads make it very easy to get lost while driving or walking. GPS may help you find your way out, if you are not on a tour. I'm not sure if I'd every go on a walking tour, given my physical endurance and the numerous steep hills. I always drive through in my car.

Second Visit

By ncip25 |

We were here 30 years ago. We were amazed by the size and history. It is an amazing historical cemetary. It's not easy finding specific graves sites. We wanted to revisit the Jefferson Davis burial site and checked google. It took a while but we found it. They are preparing a new site with a bronze statue. One could spend a couple of days here.

Impressive historical cemetary

By Dave V |

Be sure to search out the Jefferson Davis family polt. You will see a lot of interesting things on your way there.

Beautiful Cemetery with way too much confederate stuff

By David20130609 |

Beautiful cemetery with easy drive around. We just drove around for a while and got a nice few of the city of Richard.

Quick drive through

By Nancy B D |

The parking is the biggest issue and had we been able to find a spot this may have been nicer. No one was at the entrance so we did not have a map so had no way of knowing were any famous people were. It was an interesting cemetery with the hills and beautiful monumnets.

A great historical site with stunning scenery

By M3569OImike |

If you have a couple of hours in Richmond the Hollywood Cemetery is a great visit. We did it in our car with stop and look opportunities everywhere. Some great scenery with the many trees changing colour in the fall. 3 Presidents buried here and a host of other notable people. A great deal of Confederate history. Great views of the James River as well. The self guide map is available at the entrance for $1.

No maps

By Mary C |

Beautiful cemetery with many notable graves; however, there are no maps to guide visitors. There is a sign for tours but no more information re times, etc.

Incredible blend of history, art, and landscape

By RachelW2110 |

This 100+ acre cemetery includes gravestones and markers from the mid-1800s on. It's really neat to see the variety displayed here, from the incredibly ornate to the plain and undecorated. There are several museum-quality statues and the surrounding trees and plants are some of the best specimens in Richmond.

It's worth it to take a tour, but go for a walking one; the vehicle-based ones miss the charm and are (frankly) obnoxious for folks coming to honor their relatives.

History exploring

By Tracy F |

loved seeing the old gravestones esp Jefferson Davis family, civil war generals Stuart and Pickett and Presidents Monroe and Tyler

One of my Favorite Spots in Richmond

By Cindy M |

I love meandering around Hollywood Cemetery when I'm looking for paved paths to hike with peaceful views, including some overlooks of the James River. Filled with history as well as beautiful old headstones. Towering trees with areas of both sun and shade. Some portions are somewhat hilly but you can really find comfortable sections to walk and enjoy for most anyone.

Electric Car with EL

By Tammys66 |

This was an amazing tour that was very personalized by EL. He really knows the cemetery and the history of the area! I would ask for him again!

Love cemeteries!

By Trish G |

And this one has real character! We did the drive through ourselves; just stop in front and pay $1 for the map.
Some really old fascinating gravestones. And of course the us presidents that are buried there. I learned a lot online about certain people buried there, but there is a guided tour you could take on certain days with a guide that tells you stuff.

Interesting if you know VA

By Rachael K |

This cemetery sounded interesting to me because of the former VA politicians buried here, but I realized once I got there that I knew nothing about VA state history being from out-of-town. So, basically I stared out of my car at a whole bunch of Confederate soldier names I didn't recognize and felt awkward being there. Not the greatest experience.

Lots of famous dead people

By Larry M |

Take the walking tour. The guides are knowledgeable and the information is fascinating. It's too much for less than older teens. Little kids would miss the significance of the people buried there.

Lots of history here.

By Colin W |

In addition to seeing some interesting resting places for many of the departed, including past presidents, you will witness some marvelous views of the James River. While not necessarily a "must do"; it's worth the time if you have it available.

A great walk!

By Jaxiie |

I love walking through here and checking out the older graves. Definitely a cool place to stop by! If you don’t want to walk, you can drive through instead!
I recommend wearing comfy shoes if you choose to walk, there’s a lot of inclines.

Many important people buried here.

By Charliebones69 |

We had to drive around several times to find all the stops we wanted to make as the office was closed and we did not have a map. It was like a treasure hunt and down by the tomb of Jefferson Davis there is a beautiful view of the River and Richmond. I was especially pleased when I finally found the grave of Longstreet s three children who died within days of each other while he was off at war. It is on the left not far from the entrance: one headstone with three arches.

Incredible location!

By Catherine C |

We had the opportunity to visit the Hollywood Cemetery and see some of the grounds. It is a lovely location. I would love to come back and spend more time there!

Fascinating - Lots of important folks buried here and confederate soldiers

By Greg P |

this is a must see - Jefferson Davis, Robert E Lee and others as well as common confederate soldiers call this their final resting place

A very peaceful and beautiful place. The landscaping is immaculate. If you are interested in history, this is the place. Not to be missed.

Plan ahead

By Jason F |

As a Civil War buff, the purpose of my visit was to see the Civil War hero graves. This was not easily done just drivintg around. So view the online maps and resources ahead of time if you want to see J.E.B Stuars, Jeff Davis, and Picket's graves,

WOW! So many famous historical graves!

By Jim4249541 |

For US history buffs, especially of the Civil War, this is a must see! The graves of US presidents, generals and civil war figurs are all here.

Beautiful surroundings for a cemetery

We visited early in the morning when the dew was still on the grass and the trees. It was stunningly beautiful, peaceful and sobering. It is well maintained and a great source of history.

A Peaceful Rest In The Company of History And Beauty

By Rodney P |

Thousands of people flock in groups, small and large, to the resting place of Presidents, Generals, soldiers of all stripes and common folks from the Richmond area all surrounded in the magnificence of the rolling hills and ancient trees. Each day there are tours, visitors and families who come to share beauty and remembrance. The history is displayed on the tombstones, flags and the dusty records stored at the remarkable stone office at the entrance. From the top of the hill down the the broad view of the James River this is one visit that you should not pass up

Hollywood Cemetery

By kathleeng608 |

This was a beautiful walk. I highly recommend doing the tour. There is so much there that on your own you would not hear all of the stories and you would miss a lot of the really interesting people that are laid to rest there. Our tour guide Sandy was a wealth of information.

Rich in history

By Bubbaintexas |

A must see if visiting Richmond. Many famous people and Presidents buried here. You’re allowed to drive through. I enjoyed walking it.

I see dead people...and lots of live trees

By rpmc47 |

It’s a beautiful cemetery and a wonderful botanical garden to boot. Spend an hour here and see the graves of three presidents...Monroe, Tyler and Jeff Davis. One of my grandmothers always said she wanted to be buried where she’d have a beautiful view. She would have had a hard time picking the best spot here. Great views, great history, great architecture...Hollywood has to be right up there with the most scenic and important cemeteries in the US. The landscaping is a real plus...the trees and roses are worth a look.

Historical place to visit

I love talking the walking tour and stopping when I like to look at all the headstones and monuments.Going to the top at the end and having a wonderful peaceful view of the James River. A few of my friend and I took a picnic lunch and sit at the edge over looking the river. Such a peaceful and calming day. There is also two Presidents buried here.

Awesome

By Archiewhitehill |

So many picturesque grave sites from the austere to the magnificent. Civil war era graves, famous people, and ordinary people. Well landscaped with paved roads making it easy to traverse the huge cemetery. We drove around, but many were on bikes or walking. I would definitely go back to explore some more.

Very Historic Cemetery from 1847 with Rolling Hills and winding paths

By AlabamaTraveler |

This a beautiful old cemetery established 1847 in Richmond, Virginia. It is very historic and has 2 U.S. Presidents buried here as well as many soldiers from different wars -- especially from the Civil War where so many lives were lost in the Richmond area. We spent about 2 hours just driving thru the different parts of the Cemetery and looking at the many beautiful tombstone and beautiful old plants and trees in this historic cemetery. It was designed to be like a rural garden atmosphere among the rolling hills and winding paths where old trees, shrubs and flowers grow.

Weird to visit a cemetery? Not this one!

By Jim Asher |

We love visiting Hollywood cemetery, & we bring out-of-town visitors there too. They might think at first that it's weird to visit a cemetery, but they always love it!

Great gothic tombstones & crypts, many famous burial sites -- including presidents & many associated with the Civil War (it was originally a Confederate burial ground), and beautiful views of Richmond & the James River.

And just FYI: One famous Richmonder there is Lewis Ginter -- the man who built the Jefferson Hotel & who founded the Botanical gardens.

Interesting walk

By 18marilyn |

You can drive through or walk. Very interesting place, lots of types of gravestones, 2 presidents also. Nice views of the river.

Hot day, memorable visit

By Linda B |

We brought a stroller bound toddler and 5 adults up here to explore the park, and honor the memories of the deceased residents of the cemetery. We hiked, visited the presidents, governors and dignitaries and were very glad we came.

Full of history

By IronRangeMNGirl |

We stopped by for a couple of hours on our way through the area. It was a great place to get out and walk around. So interesting, all the history and different type of headstones. We really liked looking around. The cemetery itself is a beautiful setting, very sprawled out over rolling hills. You are able to drive around so you don't have to walk all around it. We drove around & got out at the ones of interest - the iron dog, the pyramid, the presidents, the Jefferson Davis family. But overall the whole cemetery is just a wonder to walk around. With Covid it was easy to stay distanced from everyone & most everyone was wearing masks.

There is a particularly interesting civil war grave marker that generations later the family has put a whole story of his life on the back of his marker. I had never seen anything like that on the back of a military headstone.

A civi war tour stop

By Bruce B |

If you have any interest in civil war history you need to tour the Hollywood cemetery in Richmond. On our civil war tour we wanted to go through the cemetery because this is where the Confederate dead from Gettysburg were interred from the battle site. We did not realize that Presidents Monroe and Tyler are also buried in Hollywood Cemetery along with Jefferson Davis. It is really worth seeing and I do highly recommend it.

Beautiful Artistic Headstones

By Wanda D |

There are many beautiful headstones in this cemetery to look at that makes you almost forget your in a cemetery. There are famous people in the cemetery from our history. It's a place of solitude yet it's a place with beautiful landscaping. You can get lost riding around but there are people that work there to guide you. Great place to visit. Spring and summer is amazing!

Explore history in Richmond

By bobRuthazer |

Off the beaten path, you can see hundreds of years of history in one cemetary. Well laid out with views of the James. Many monuments to famous and influential men and women of Virginia. A must see.

Beautiful and interesting

This cemetery in set by the river and is very pretty. It is great to get out of your car and explore-so much to see!

Electric car tour

By Dianna K |

The car tour was a no show after paid and confirmed more than 24 hours prior. They did refund our money and wasted and monopolized an hour of our time on the last morning in town.. the cemetery itself was breath taking. Wish we had all day to spend there.

Beautiful Cemetery

By kmbracy |

There are many ways to tour Hollywood Cemetery. There are professional tours that take you around the cemetery. There are guides that will walk around the cemetery with you. We chose to tour the cemetery ourselves.

Maps can be purchased at the office for $ 1. From there, you follow the blue line that is painted on the right hand side of the road.

We enjoyed seeing the resting place of 2 presidents and enjoyed the Confederate solder section as well.

We probably spent about 1 to 1 1/2 hours in the cemetery. My teens lost focus after that. They may have been more entertained by a tour guide but I am not sure.

Its a great place to see at least once in your lifetime.

Walking Tour is the Way to Go

By paulaspassport |

Signs are not great, so I would definitely recommend a walking tour. It was 2 hours but went by very quick. Not too many hills, and history was covered about graves, history and certain people.

A trip into history

This is awe inspiring to see the final resting place for presidents as well as noted historic fiqures overlooking the James River high on a bluff.

One of Richmond's major tourist attractions

By Taylor B |

Next to Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC, there is no other tourist attraction of its kind in the country to rival Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. You'll understand if you take the time to visit the beautiful 130-acre, sprawling cemetery amid rolling hills and winding paths overlooking the James River and downtown Richmond. Located at 412 South Cherry at Albemarle Street in the Carytown or Oregon Hill neighborhood of Richmond, Hollywood Cemetery was designated a Virginia Landmark and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. Established in 1849, it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in a town filled with historic sites dating to the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Start your tour at the cemetery office at the entrance to the cemetery. You can obtain a map that designates the locations of notable burials. Hollywood Cemetery is the resting place of two U.S. Presidents (James Monroe, John Tyler), President Jefferson Davis of the Confederacy, 28 Confederate generals, including Jeb Stuart, George Pickett, A.P. Hill and Fitzhugh Lee, more than 18,000 Confederate soldiers, historian Douglas Southall Freeman, Hunter McGuire, Stonewall Jackson's physician and a noted surgeon who founded the Virginia College of Medicine and was president of the American Medical Association, and Matthew Fontaine Maury, a world renowned American oceanographer and scientist. In 1869, a 90-foot high granite pyramid was constructed as a memorial to Confederate dead. A visit to Richmond isn't complete without a trip through Hollywood Cemetery.

Beautiful, Historic and Peaceful

By Seawolf30 |

This is a large and historic cemetery in which thousand of Confederate soldiers are interred, along with U. S. Presidents James Monroe and John Tyler, Confederate President Jefferson Davis, and Major General J. E. B. Stuart.

This is not your average place to sightsee.

By Fred P |

We have been there several times. When we have guest from out of town, we sometimes take them here. They are amazed at the history.

Huge Historical Cemetery

By Ronald B |

Very laid out drive thru the cemetery with beautilful monuments and markers of such famous people that are buried there. The scenery is breathtaking of the views in the cemetery and the James river. Be sure to check the map of the burial plots when you first enter the cemetery. Very enjoyable drive thru and not crowded the day we visited. Must see when in the area.

I want to be buried here

By GuatemalaCiclista |

Its a shame the dead don't enjoy their surroundings cuz this place is the bomb. Great afternoon activity.

Beautiful and Historic Cemetery

By David S |

A must see for those who appreciate U.S. and Virginia history. In particular, Civil War history buffs. It is never very busy and there is no admission fee. Much hilly walking. May be difficult for the handicapped in wheel chairs.

It’s a cemetery

By Nick T |

Oregon hill is a cool neighborhood but not much todo there. The cemetery is in good condition and walkable.

Nice place to be

By Jos H |

It's often the case that you finf peace and quitness at a cemetery. Hollywood offers you that and more. This "more" is the spectecular view over the Jamesriver. Parking is (limited) available on the cemetery. It seems parking is also available across the street.

Filled With History

By Jimm8117 |

We loved our visit. I only wish that we had more time. The gravesite of Jefferson Davis was phenomenal! Also visited the graves of General Pickett and JEB Stuart. If you love history don’t miss this place!

Visiting Richmond

By shellybean31 |

Went to Richmond to visit family and took a day trip to explore this historic cemetery. The grounds are like a maze in my opinion but easy to navigate. Beautiful and quiet with great views of the river below.

Graveyard with a stunning view

By Willem K |

Beautiful cemetery with a lot of history, among other things two US presidents. Also a gorgeous view of the river. Entrance is free. Lots of folks around just enjoying the area - not just visiting graves.

Great tour!

By Bernie22363376 |

I took the tour at 10 AM with a small group. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and helpful. She pointed out several interesting headstones and provided information on the plots and iron work surrounding them. The tour takes about 2 hours and personally I could have used another hour as there is so much to see. The tour costs $15 (cash only if you do not pay online) There were several, including myself, who had seen online it was a free tour - this is not the case. Parking is limited. One great item is a public restroom! Our guide pointed the direction to go to see other famous graves that are not on the tour. Wear comfortable shoes as there is a lot of walking.

Beautiful cemetery

By SBS20001 |

Some people might think it odd to visit a cemetery but they are often very peaceful places. Hollywood cemetery is huge and we only walked around a small portion. There are fantastic views of the James River and lots of ornate stone work around the graves. You can also check out the graves of two presidents. If you enjoy cemeteries this is a good one to visit.

Terrific self-guided visit

By Karin D |

We loved our visit to Hollywood Cemetery. The website has a great self-guided tour. There are 2 presidents buried here. The sobering part of the visit is the 20k or more confederate soldiers that are buried here.

Beautiful!

By RobynD804 |

This cemetery has to be the most beautiful cemetery I have ever seen! It sits on a hill overlooking the river and the landscaping is outstanding!

Wonderful and friendly staff

By EFW2014 |

A guide gave us a map of the cemetery and was wicked helpful in regards to whom was where.

Basically follow the blue line painted on the side of the road, it leads you around the historic portion of Hollywood cemetery. Restrooms located at the lower end of the office.

Historical and photogenic...a trip back in time

By mjmphoto |

As a Richmond resident and an amateur photographer, I've been to Hollywood Cemetery several times. There's so much to see and experience that I always find something interesting that I've missed. Going there is like going back in time. An old style cemetery in the truest sense, the graves date from the 1850's through to the present and include presidents, civil war generals and soldiers, supreme court justices, business and professional people, and ordinary Richmond residents. The graves in the older sections include beautifully ornate monuments and headstones. The grounds are beautifully kept and well laid out in a reserve of well over 100 acres. You can drive throughout the cemetery but I strongly recommend parking at several points along the way and walking among the graves to read the inscriptions. The property overlooks the James River and Richmond's stunning skyline. Hollywood is a cherished Richmond landmark and well worth a visit.

Very unique attraction

By Corey |

Great day trip, very unique. Go during good weather and walk or bike it. Very awesome to see a presidential grave and great scenery along the river.

massive and beautiful complex overlooking the James river

By Tracy Brady |

we visited this site today. the office was not open to get a map so we explored on our own. you can drive or walk, but be prepared to park at the front and hoof it! the place is massive! you can drive, but only about a third of the site. would be a nice place to take a tour and learn the history!

Cemetery 🪦

By Roses |

This cemetery is way bigger than I thought it’d be.
You can actually drive through it and I recommend doing that first before deciding if you’d like to walk through.
It’s very beautiful and very much worth the trip.

Two Presidents and a Whole lot of History

By Dennis W |

Jefferson Davis is the big draw here if your a Civil War buff. But there is a whole lot to see here besides Mr. Davis. Two us Presidents, a bunch of Generals in a beautiful location. Very nice walk around.

Quick Stop

By karlfickling |

I was in Richmond for 4 work days, with no day hours to see anything until the last day. I had about 2 hours before my flight left and chose to visit the Hollywood Cemetery. I't minutes from the airport. The office was staffed with a very friendly staff who gladly helped me with my #1 FAQ: "Do you have a map." The path to the graves of Civil War soldiers, and presidents Tyler and Monroe, and Jefferson Davis were marked for me. It was Spring and all the flowering trees were in full bloom--gorgeous! Plus, the cemetery looks out over the James River from a high bluff. I self-toured, but their are LOTS of guided tour options that I'll take advantage of on my next trip--because I already plan to bring my wife and spend some extra days.

Extremely interesting

By Michael M |

Extremely interesting , and well kept. Although I didn't get a map of the grounds I was able to use Ingress Prime to find points of interest.

Interesting place.

By Momto2 |

This was a very interesting place to visit. We saw graves of Presidents Tyler and Monroe. My young kids liked reading the years on the stones.

A Tour Through History’s Dead

By Richard M |

Hollywood Cemetery is a large and historic cemetery with amazing tombstones and monuments. Three past Presidents, including Jefferson Davis, over 18,000 Southern soldiers alongside CSA Generals Pickett and Stonewall Jackson. Hollywood Cemetery is either a great driving tour or walking tour.

Cemetery as Americana

By Caroline C |

I have family buried here so I try to drive through and wave when in town. Lots of fascinating monuments and tombstones to the departed. If you are a fan of the quirky, off-beat and free, this is a spot to check out. Nicely shaded on hot days. There is a large section of Civil War graves. I asked family how our ancestor came to be buried in Richmond. Turns out he was part of a Civil War POW exchange but became ill and died before he could get home. Learn about both Virginia and American history as you explore this historic cemetery. Staff in the office is very helpful if you have questions or need assistance locating a grave. .

classy&unique tumbstones

well kept cemetery, good job2the staff there! let yr imagination take u 6feet under& fist bump with them all!

Huge!

By Sheila M |

I didn’t take a tour but probably should have. The cemetery is very large, beautiful river views, several presidents, many Virginia governors, other notables, still a functioning family cemetery.

Beautiful Historic Cemetery

By Amy Hall |

This was our first visit to Richmond, and Hollywood Cemetery was one of our first stops. This is a huge cemetery, and we made the mistake of NOT stopping at the office for a map but we were able to pull one up on our cell phones. The cemetery was very quiet and peaceful, and we saw many people walking their dogs, cycling and jogging throughout the cemetery. Everything was beautiful and well maintained. We enjoyed visiting the grave sites of James Monroe, John Tyler and Jefferson Davis as well as the Civil War Memorial and the graves of more than 18,000 Civil War soldiers. The view of the river was awesome. I would highly recommend anyone interested in history to do some research and make a stop here if visiting the Richmond area.

Try a tour , Incredible place with lots of stories!

By totallytravelers |

We did this on a Segway tour , There are other non walking tours as well . It's large and 1 of us a hard time walking far. Incredible history and stories , well worth a tour guide . Though you can self walk as well. Pretty and interesting place for a nice day outing.

One of my favorite attractions!

By kjack10055 |

In addition to the grave sites of past Presidents and Confederate Soldiers, everywhere you go in this cemetery offers a small glimpse into our country's history. The views from the hillside of both Richmond and the James River were an added bonus!

Historic cemetery

Went back in 2007, has graves of a lot of Confederate generals. Great place to visit near Halloween or if you're a history buff

A great historical reminder

By Michael D |

I use to walk around the cementary a lot when i was younger and visit every now and then to this day. It is a very intresting place if your in the area going for a run or walk anyway might as well do it there. The sheer number of people buried there as well as the work done to preserve there memories is both humbling and terrifying with its reminders of the cost of war. When entering you will find a giant pyramid under which are the remains of unidentified civil war soldiers. The whole place has these reminders; if you are a history buff or just need a place for a long run its a good place to visit and im sure those lost wouldnt mind the company.
