We had a wonderful time at the plantation. It was beautiful. We visited in February so there wasn't much greenery but still beautiful. The people were awesome. The tour was great. Loved our time there.

We visited this site to see an 18th century plantation house better understand life on a rice plantation in that time period. The docent was very good and led the house tour. He was very knowledgeable about the house, the family and the slaves roll in the building and running the rice plantation. Unfortunately there was no good representation of where the rice was grown. There is a good restaurant onsite. It’s a little pricey.

Tour guide could not answer any questions and spoke in a way that was extremely monotone and non exciting. Did not enjoy. It was only me, my husband, and my mom on the tour.

We were enchanted by our tour guide, who was dressed in period costume. She gave just enough details about the history of the house, without becomming boring. The afternoon tea was a delight, and the food and sevice was impeccable. We made a few purchases in the gift shop, then continued on to Georgetown. I would highly recommend a visit to the Plantation, but maybe not in the warmer months as mosquitos were already making their presence felt.

This was a most enjoyable informative tour. The plantation is beautiful. Our guide was great. We learned so much about rice plantations and the slaves brought there. I would definitely recommend this tour.

We thoroughly enjoyed our history lesson at the Hopsewee Plantation. We were vacationing in Myrtle Beach and saw an online recommendation to visit Hopsewee Plantation, something different from the usual tourist attractions. It was a nice ride from MB. The guide was very passionate about SC farming and environmental history. Hint: One of the signers of the Declaration of Independence once owned this Plantation. Enjoy and have lunch in the tearoom. The food was delicious and the staff was very friendly. Beware of the mosquitoes!

Our guide through the House - Linda - was not only knowledgeable about the house, its occupants, and local history, but she was extremely warm and friendly. It was a pleasure talking with her.
Lunch was fantastic - the setting, the service, and the food - everything was just great.
Thank you to everybody at the site for making our visit a real pleasure.

We live in MA and come to Murrells Inlet every year. Always try to visit Hopsewee for its Southern tea and other entrees. The variety of teas are outstanding and each small morsel on the tea trays a delight.
My husband enjoys the shrimp and grits and tried the coconut cake this visit.
We highly recommend this delightful tea room for a lovely lunch. The house tour is interesting and the grounds fun to explore. The hosts are wonderful people we met on a previous visit. It is gracious living here indeed.

My husband and I took a friend from out of state to celebrate her birthday at the River Oak Cottage Tea Room. We all had a wonderful time. The food was delicious. The service was attentive and friendly. We met the owner Raejean. She took time to talk to us about the recipes that she developed for the Tea Room. Our friend said it was and unforgettable birthday celebration.

We enjoyed lunch at the Tea Room. Service was excellent and food was delicious. The new Gullah/history museum was well done.

Well worth the visit. So much history. The home and grounds are beautiful. The guide was great. She has a wealth of information and answered questions.
Lunch was very good. Get the sampler.
Staff are welcoming and very friendly.

Disappointing experience. Not very friendly. Ready to go on a tour but once we found out we couldn’t get anything to eat it made our decision to leave easier. It was almost like “what are you doing here?”

For my wife and I the excellence of lunch and the Gullah talk was undone by an incident in our house tour. We had been told by our driver to ask about the rifle mounted over the mantle in the Master's study. When we entered the room I told our docent our driver had directed me to ask about the gun. "Who was your driver?" she asked. I gave his name. She responded "Thank *** for that question". She then proceeded to give a technical explanation of how the cocking mechanism of this rifle had been altered.
On the drive back our driver was outraged with this answer and promised to complain. The rifle he advised,as was confirmed by a display at the Old Slave Market, was a Slaver's Rifle used when they were guarding slaves.
In May of 2022 this white washing of the shameful history of slavery is INEXCUSABLE adding shame to shame and a disservice to history.
I would recommend suggest trying to find a more forthright plantation to visit.

Returning to Myrtle Beach, from a two-day side-trip to Charleston; we realized we still had time to catch a meal/tea at the Hopsewee's River Oak Cottage Tearoom....and rekindle memories of previous visits there.
The tearoom is as charming as ever; providing a casual elegance, set within the engaging Plantation grounds.
Our server was friendly, though a bit scattered.
We shared the Low-country sampler, and a chicken salad sandwich on sourdough, with gin-gin soup. Everything, as we remembered, was quite tasty (we took-out some of the very flavorful, homemade gin-gin soup for later enjoyment).
Of course, the whole meal was augmented by the accompanying bourbon/vanilla tea (with honey & cream); and indulgently concluded, with a couple of scones.
We're really glad that we were able to make a return visit; and bring back some fond memories, of Plantation tours, luncheons, and high teas here.

I spent a lovely afternoon at the Hopsewee Plantation. We combined a delicious lunch in the tea room with a Gullah sweet grass making class. ( reservations required) Both are highly recommended.

House tour was alright, but Gullah tour was not as advertised. The fill-in speaker was not familiar with the Gullah culture and gave a talk not pertinent to the Gullah subject. We should have been offered a refund instead of substituting a person that was not up to par on the subject advertised.

This was my second time touring the plantation house this summer. I took my college aged granddaughter earlier this week and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. The house is beautiful, but the tour guide, Yancey McLeod, brings it to life. Visitors could miss so much without the detail and the stories he has to tell. We also had tea and a mimosa in the beautiful tea room. This is a “must” stop if you’re anywhere within an hour or two. I plan to go a third time with friends in the fall.

Great band, food, drinks, and company. Big tent was a good idea. The hosts were gracious, as always, and the mix of participants stimulating.

My friend and I had a lovely time at Hopsewee. We spent a charming half hour with the lady who spoke and, informed us about, Gullah. Very personable and the "real thing". She and her family for generations back were Gullah. After the talk, we had lunch in the tea room and it was charming and tasty. Making it even more pleasant was everyone who was just so nice!

Visited with a couch trip. Very accommodating and informative. Our guides were amazing. Bambi was very funny and informative. Jonas was also extremely informative. You could tell they love what they do. Mrs. Beattie was in the tea room and very welcoming and willing to answer any question. If you like history, a must do.

The Hopsewee Plantation carries a beautiful energy of time gone by and yet is very well equipped for today. The plantation home is kept in a stately manner and the grounds are very well manicured. The Gullah Geechee presentation is very informative with Glander Pressley and the tea is lovely. The ghost tour has some fun facts and information about the area. The service staff was amazing and very accommodating. Julie greeted us in the gift shop and was delightful. Elizabeth was our guide for the house and ghost tour and was amazing and full of information. I highly recommend checking out this beautiful plantation.

My daughter and I took a sweetgrass basket making course at Hopsewee Plantation, taught by Ms. Vera Manigault, and it was delightful!!

This 50 minute tour is well worth the stop if you are in the area. The house has many interesting facts and the property is beautifully to stroll through.
Misquito spray is staged around the buildings, but you may wish to bring your own and dress accordingly.

My sisters and I were on a tour of the French Santee, and decided to bear off and cross over the river to go to have lunch at Hopsewee. We had made reservations for the tea room, the house tour, and the museum for which we paid in advance. We enjoyed our lunch, but found that there was a discrepancy between prices on the menu and prices that we were charged. We addressed it, but I cannot say that the staff handled it particularly well.
We went directly to the house tour that we enjoyed very much. Our guide was very knowledgeable and engaging, and we learned a lot from her. After the tour was over, we were most disappointed to learn that the museum had closed at 4 o’clock, at the same time that the house tour ended. We had bought tickets for the museum, so we lost $30 between us. It seems to me that we should have been told at the check-in desk that we would not be able to manage lunch, the house tour, and the museum during the time that we had reserved.
Perhaps some of the confusion was due to it being early in the season, and the management will hopefully work out the kinks, because otherwise, it is a beautiful, historic site that should be on one’s list of places to visit in the Lowcountry.

My fiancé and I chose Hopsewee for its magical atmosphere, and gorgeous views. The wedding package offered is awesome, and things are easily altered to your tastes. 10/10 would recommend to anyone!!

Our house guide, Bambi was very knowledgeable. We did the High Tea for lunch, was the high point of our Girls Weekend!

My sister and I had a wonderful afternoon with lunch at the Hopsewee dining room followed by a sweet grass basket class! Try the okra pancakes! The grounds are BEAUTIFUL!

Our group of four adults enjoyed greatly the docent who guided our tour of the Lynch house. Her knowledge and presentation was outstanding. The Gullah-Geechee presentation was disappointing. That docent did not stay on topic and spent much of her time self-aggrandizing. It was difficult to know if she was attempting to be in character or present her own world view. The dioramas were quite good but the docent offered nothing and was, in fact, confused and confusing.

The entrance to Hopsewee is wonderful driving on the hard packed one lane thru the lowland with the Spanish moss draped trees. Finished around 1740, Hopsewee is an outstanding example of a Low Country rice plantation. It's brick foundation, heart of pine floors, black cypress walls and unique hand carved candle molding are all part of its historic charm. Sitting on the banks of the North Santee River the original 500 acres was one of the largest rice and indigo plantations in the country. By 1850 they were producing over 560,000 pounds of rice in the island fields between the North and South Santee Rivers. The Lynch family was one of the most prominent in the country and sadly due to Thomas Sr's sudden death Thomas Jr was elevated to the Continental Congress and signed the Declaration of Independence in his father's place. Battling his own health problems, Thomas Jr left for France in 1779 via the West Indies but was lost at sea.
The fortunate thing for Hopsewee is there have only been 5 owners in its nearly 300 year existence and the last two the Maynard's and the current owner's the Beattie's understand the importance of stewardship with one of the most important pieces of our American history.

So glad to have added the visit to Hopsewee Plantation on my last day as a stop between Myrtle Beach and Charleston airport. The ladies were super nice. The house guide, Bambi, was knowledgeable and hilarious. The food was great. They even made a gluten free scone just for me. Didn't have time to take the whole tour, only saw the house and had lunch, but it was definitely worth it.

we decided to make the drive to somewhere off the beaten path and we were rewarded with a wonderful day at Hopsewee plantation near Georgetown SC. The tour of the home and grounds was very interesting and the views of the Santee river were beautiful. we looked forward to the restaurant reservations and our meal was delicious and freshly prepared with local shrimp and ingrediants. it was not overly expensive for the tour and meal (less than 140.00) it was relaxing since there was not a large crowd on Wednesday. with downtown Georgetown only a few minutes away we had a super day of sightseeing and shop hopping. would reccomend you give Hopsewee a try!

Ate at the tearoom. Terrible experience. Service was poor to non-existent. Waited 15 minutes to get water after finally being seated. Soup was all watery liquid, nothing except very small pieces of anything solid, crab cakes were bite sized and very expensive with all breading. Took so long that we missed our tour.

I can not recommend a visit to this historic site highly enough. The small museum was so interesting and didn't shy away from the "true history" of this plantation. The presentation in the museum was so moving. Our tour guide of the plantation house was well-spoken, knowledgeable and personable. The home itself, although smaller and less grand than others we have seen, was beautifully restored. The grounds are stunning with an abundance of trees covered with Spanish moss. We learned so much about rice farming and plantation life. We both have mixed feelings when it comes to visiting plantations, we felt that everyone who we encountered during our time here dealt with the history of the time realistically. Although the admission to this museum and the tour was more expensive than we had anticipated, it was worth every cent!

We had lunch at the River Oak Tea Room on September 25 at 1pm. We come here each year during our September vacation in Garden City Beach, South Carolina. The service & the food is excellent. Everything from the Pot of Hopsewee House Tea to the Gin Gin Soup then the Lo Country Sampler for me and the Hopsewee Salad Plate for my wife was fantastic. Then we top it off with the delicious Hummingbird Cake. Deb our waitress was wonderful.

We thoroughly enjoyed our day trip from North Myrtle Beach to Hopsewee Plantation.
We started with the Gullah Geechee talk, which was hugely informative as well as entertaining. The house tour was also quite interesting. The focus of the house tour is more on the birthplace of Thomas Lynch, Jr. and him being a signer of the American Constitution and less on the role of the slaves in the plantation’s history. Both tours were excellent.
We stayed for lunch in the Tea Room. The food was excellent and even though they were super busy and a bit slow, the staff kept checking with us to make sure that we were okay.
We would definitely recommend a visit.

My husband and I took a guided tour of the plantation house with Bambi Bullard that was one of the highlights of our stay in South Carolina’s Low Country. We learned a lot that we didn’t know about our history that led us to do further research on our own, especially on the 54th Massachusetts Regiment, Union Army. Informative , beautiful, well worth a visit!

We visited the plantation and did the house tour. The tour was approximately an hour and was informative. The grounds were beautiful. The mosquitos are HORRIBLE. They provided bug spray outside the check in. This is really convenient if you didn’t bring your own. After our tour we did a lunch and tea service. Our daughter (3) really loved the tea “party”. It was so fun letting her make our tea. The food was good and the kids tea plate was perfect for a child. This is one of her favorite things from our week long vacation. The service was timely and friendly.

My friend and I took the Sweetgrass basket Making class. Ms. Manigault is a great and patient teacher. Enjoyed listening to her tell about her family and the long history of the Gullah here in South Carolina. The class is well worth the time. You take home your own creation. A not to miss part of Hopswee.

Both the Gullah talk and the house tour were well done and interesting. The location on the river with a lot of live oak trees was beautiful. However the staff in the gift shop that checked you in and arranged for wine walk acted as though you were inconveniencing them. We were supposed to have appetizers with the wine and were given a small charcuterie board instead, none of which was nearly the price charged.

The weather was terrible, so there weren't many reservations, but we were treated wonderfully by the staff. Jennifrey (sp?) did her Gullah presentation just for us, and we could have all of our questions answered. Linda did the same with the house tour. In between the two presentations, we went through the little museum, which has a lot of great information. The tea shop ladies were also awesome. Because we were the only two on our tour, we finished a little early. I knew when I made reservations that we would have time in between, which I had planned to use walking the grounds, but it was way too cold for that. The tea shop was able to accommodate us for an earlier seating, though we would have waited by the fireplace. We did the full Southern tea, and it was excellent! I have worked in a tea shop, so I know tea and formal tea! We hope to come back someday (a little later in the year, but before mosquito season), and have lunch in the tea shop, as they do that as well, and the menu looks great.

Wonderful tour; full of great history of the owners, house, and the Revolutionary and Civil War. Our guide was Bambi 👍🏻

My wife and I made our second trip to Hopsewee Plantation. We visited the museum - a real nice addition and next door to the tea room. We then had their tea service in the tea room. We didn’t have time to visit the plantation house but we were graciously allowed to reschedule it for one week later. We plan to have lunch in the tea room on our return visit. The owners and wait staff are very warm and welcoming. Hopsewee Plantation is one of the stops on the Gullah Geechee Corridor.

The Guides were fantastic! We learned a lot, and felt the two tours were both well worth the money. We even had an excellent lunch there.

We toured the house, enjoyed a very informative presentation. Lunch was excellent, tasty and good portions. We highly recommend the basketmaking class, even if you are not a crafty person you will enjoy making your own little sweetgrass basket. The instructor was very well prepared and informative. Individually helped everyone make a beautiful basket. We definitely recommend spending the day!

We really enjoyed our tea for two. It was the first tea for my friend who is not a tea drinker - they accommodated with offering coffee, hot chocolate or champagne (which was an additional cost).
We enjoyed our delicious tea sandwiches, scones and dessert. Very nice way to spend the afternoon.

We toured the plantation house and took the Gullah tour. Both were very good and the tour guides were excellent. Lunch at the tea room, however, was disappointing. Service was terribly slow. The soup was lukewarm. The crab cakes were mushy and mostly breading. Water was not refilled, I ordered hot tea that took 15 minutes to arrive and needed reminding

Tea room low country food is excellent--RJ kept us entertained! Yancey, our docent for the tour is the definition of an erudite southern gentleman. Chivalry is alive and well!

Did the tour of the home. we must have picked the best time 11am because my friend and I were the only ones on the tour and it felt super exclusive! Did a southern tea service afterwards. I highly recommend that addition. Very reasonably priced and was enough food for a lunchtime meal.

The house was beautiful and it felt like walking back into history. Yancey the tour guide was very informative and awesome. This was worth the drive.

Our tour guide was the absolute best. She knew the house top to bottom. Don't miss this place. You will not regret it.

Such an incredibly serene setting ! Magnificent grounds. Lunch in the Tea Room never disappoints.
This should be on everyone’s to-do list.
Thank you

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Yancy was our guide and was so informative and interesting. We loved the tour of the home and enjoyed our lunch in the tea room. We highly recommend this experience.

Stunning grounds (watch out for the poison ivy though), incredible tour of the plantation house. Enjoyed the quality of the tour, walking around the grounds taking lots of pictures and just being with each other. A delightful day.

I love Hopsewee. It is charming, historic, and beautiful. The River Oaks Tea Room offers delicious food, but only for lunch. The staff, some of which in historic costume, are efficient and knowledgeable. I never miss a chance to visit Hopsewee.

We really enjoyed the lovely tea service at Hopsewee Plantation! The savories were very innovative and beautiful and the scones were moist and delicious and served with the traditional clotted cream and lemon curd. We loved the house tea blend so much that we took home a box to enjoy later. We were also touched by the wonderful hospitality provided by the Plantation's owner and the servers in the tea cottage. We would recommend this experience to any tea lovers!

We started with a delicious lunch in the Tea Room. Service was a little slow but, the food was worth the wait. We were still dining when our tour began and it was quickly rescheduled for 2pm. The house tour was excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed learning about the house and work on the rice plantation. This plantation was one of several owned by the renowned Lynch Family. When the tour explained the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we learned several facts about the signing unknown to us until this tour. Highly recommend going and be sure to enjoy lunch or High Tea before the tour begins.

Made reaservations for a afternoon with my Mother for an easrl Mothers day lunch. We were briefly greeted upon arrival and handed menus.
Wait staff was pleasanrt, however, could have explained their serve set-up, I asked, unsuccessfully for some menu clarifications,.. it just was not a smooth, lovely lunch as expected. Food was delicious, just need some "southern hospitality' on the serving side.

Elizabeth gave us a wonderful tour of the house. It was interesting how this house has stayed throughout history and how rice was king during the 1800’s

Enjoyed the connection to early South Carolina history, rice history and plantation life. The new history museum is a real plus.

Having toured the house and grounds, followed by a high-tea on last year's visit; we just opted for a meal and teas off the main menu this time.
Having apparently the only 11am reservation, it took awhile after our on-time arrival before anyone acknowledged our presence; even after walking about in the staff's line of sight for quite awhile. Once finally acknowledged, we were taken to the seating area; which was followed by some confusion and reshuffling of where we were to sit, accompanied by a further oblivious attitude to our presence (we don't need to be pampered, but it's nice to at least be acknowledged). Eventually things settled down, and the staff seemed to know what they were doing. After that, things proceeded more smoothly; and we began to feel like customers, rather than an occasional distraction (partly attributed to the arrival of various 11:30 am patrons).
We shared the gin-gin soup, and the lowcountry sampler; both of which were quite tasty. Of course, the real star of the experience was the tea. We both had the bourbon/vanilla tea (with honey & cream) and a cinnamon raisin scone. As before, it was excellent.
We added some take-out coconut and hummingbird cake for later enjoyment.
After a somewhat uncomfortable beginning: the overall whole experience was enjoyable.

drove 3 hours and had to wait over an hour to get a cup of tea overly expensive for what you get for tea service

Had lunch in the tea room, the food was delicious. Then, went on to the plantation for an informative tour

Enjoyed a personal tour of 50 minutes of the 4 x 4 mansion with a guide. Also seen slaves’ quarters in two same buildings,

The guide at the house was very knowledgeable and friendly. Being in period dress made her more interesting. The staff in the tea house were friendly - always smiling.

Hopsowee Plantation was everything we imagined it to be. The grounds were lovely, the guide was knowledgable, articulate and friendly as was all the rest of the staff. It was a little bit of a drive but worth it. We would go back again

What a beautiful location! We learned so much about the history of indigo and took home truly unique mementos. I would highly recommend the class as well as lunch.

Hopsewee is one of a kind in the Lowcountry. We were greeted in the tea room and had a delicious meal! Then Linda gave us a tour of the house and it was spectacular! Can’t wait to go back!

We very disappointed in the whole experience. The check in was disorganized and we were directed to the wrong place to meet with the guide to start the tour. The tour was not really a tour as the guide basically told us to walk through the rooms and let her know if we had any questions. She gave a minimal history of the house and the family and was more interested in talking about herself than them. I’ve been to many plantations and historical homes across the world and this one was the worst. Oh and in addition several of the “historical facts” that she imparted were actually incorrect.

Our purpose of the visit to Hopeswee for the tour was to learn more about the history of the plantation.
Instead we experienced 50 minutes of story telling about the house itself without gaining any knowledge about what happened there. Had I known this before booking the tour I would have just booked a tour of a historical stately home.
Whilst I understand its a very sensitive subject, I feel it is important to acknowledge the past of this plantation so that there is a greater understanding of American history.
I asked a few questions, one in particular about the bell that is situated in the car park. This question got passed from the lady at the front desk to the lady that currently owns the plantation, who couldn't give me an answer. In my opinion there is no reason to shy away from these things, as it's the only way of moving forward when people are educated about this subject.

Awesome accurately restored Revolutionary Was era house and grounds on a beautiful spot. Elizabeth, our tour guide was very knowledgeable and gave an excellent tour. Wonderful experience

A wonderful experience with excellent menu options and the service is exceptional. The menu consists of many Low Country favorites and does not disappoint! The Low Country Sampler is my favorite as it provides a little taste of many traditional Low Country favorites.

We took a class to learn how sweet grass baskets were made. I had taken this class before with Miss Vera before covid. This time I took my husband, my 2 granddaughters, and my mother in law. Of course we had different ages. She was attentive to each of us and helped when needed. My mother in law was 85, Miss Vera was helpful and understanding to her needs. The granddaughters, age 15 and 11 and my husband were able to grasp the concept easily. Miss Vera talked and answered questions, she was very engaging and she shared her family history and the history of this art passed down from generations. If you want something to do and to learn the history of this area, take this class.

This was such a fun experience with my family. I made a beautiful small basket with the help of Vera. Thank you.

We toured the house with Bambi, who , not only was extremely informed about the house and the signers of the Constitution, but was an absolute hoot of a guide! Kudos to her!
We also listened to the explanation of the Gullah Geechee culture and language whilst in one of the 2 slave cabins on site. Very interesting.
The afternoon tea at the end was a nice ending to the dsy.

Our group of four took a tour of the eighteenth century Lynch house and then had lunch at the restaurant/tea room. The tour of the home was presented in a very interesting manner, with a balanced historical view of the families living in the house and the enslaved African who served those in the house, Although the house does not contain original furnishings, the furnishes are mostly of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century and the artifacts on display provide an excellent background to the Lynch family and those with whom they were connected.
And the lunch was delicious, outstanding Lowcountry dishes for the lunch time. Service was attentive and prompt. Be sure to include a meal or a tea with the tour. It's well worth it.

We visited on 7/16/2022 and had a personal tour of the home with Elizabeth. She was extremely knowledgeable and very kind too. Afterward, we had a full lunch at the tea room. Our food was delicious. We would recommend this adventure to others.

Lunch at the tea room: Sweet! Costumed server couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating. Good food in a pretty setting. The hostess, however, left a lot to be desired. She was hardly a ray of sunshine, and though the place was not crowded, she acted as if we were personally inconveniencing her. Would a smile and a welcome been too much to expect, y'all? Especially down here in the Lowcountry, warm greetings and first impressions matter. But once one got past this unpleasant person, it was lovely.

Bambi was an awesome docent. She was very funny and knowledgeable. I would come back again. Great tour.

We toured the house and had a wonderful docent.
We then ate lunch in the quaint tea room.
I always take my out of town guests to enjoy Hopsewee Plantation.

I had dined at Hopsewee in the past. Some of my friends had never been. So for my retirement/birthday lunch, i asked my friends to join me. After lunch, we took a stroll along the river and around the grounds.

This area is Mosquito country for sure. Hopsewee was prepared for us by offering spray mosquito repellent upon our arrival. The tour guide, Jonah, was phenomenal. He knew the history of the plantation inside and out. It was a twist to get so much more Revolutionary vs antebellum history related to plantation homes. Even more, I enjoyed the history of the Gullah peoples. Their story should be told in every American history book. After the tour we had lunch in the Tea Room onsite. Delicious food. Collard greens and pork were exceptional.

The house tour was nice. The Gulla Geeche presentation was done by someone different and she rambled. Not sure what she was really getting to the point of.

This was our second visit to Hopsewee Plantation. The first time we could not eat at the tea room (which serves off the menu also) so it was a must on our return trip to Myrtle Beach. The meal did not disappoint. We ordered off the menu with husband getting the sampler plate of 7 different delicious dishes.

What a wonderful tea service they have and the plantation grounds are beautiful. I would definitely recommend taking your daughters, sisters or moms here. It's just a nice afternoon lunch and the walk by the river is incredibly beautiful.

Plantation guide was excellent but Tea room lunch was poor. Yea room lady who seated us was grouchy, not welcoming. I almost left but was with other couples. Waited a long time for drinks, food, check. Not enough wait staff and mistakes were made on our order.

We found this tour online and were not disappointed! It was interesting learning the history that is not taught in school and was unknown to my group. Seeing the plantation and surrounding areas was amazing. The tour guides were extremely knowledgeable and super nice. I would definitely recommend this tour.

Very lovely tour of the house. Learned some new information about the history of the area. Along with the plantation and its inhabitants.
Had a wonderful lunch in the Tea Room. Everyone was so polite and welcoming.

One of if not the best house tour, I took on trip covering Southeast US. The guide was knowledgeable and informative about the family and the interiors. I enjoyed a terrific, low country sampler plate for lunch, and of course had to buy several indigo products. Highly

This was my second time visiting Hopsewee Plantation. This time I brought my daughter and Mom to experience it. Our guide was Yancey. He was charismatic and charming! Very informative and welcomed questions. We thoroughly enjoyed his guided tour of the house. The grounds and river were beautiful.

We visited this plantation on Tuesday 2/20/2024. We arrived too late for a full tour, but they agreed we could do the Gullah presentation and tour for us anyway. They advertised that this tour was 1 hour 45 minutes based on a flyer describing tour options at the front desk. By the time the tip was added the cost was $48.
We waited for about 15 minutes in the designated area for the presenter to come get us for the tour to begin. When we inquired at the front desk about when to expect the tour guide to get us, we were informed that the presentation had already started and we were directed to the museum. Once there we heard a talk for maybe 20 minutes. Based on what we saw, the talk was informative, and the young lady seemed very nice, but she skimmed over what the presentation was supposed to cover based on the website description. I think there was more information presented on rice and how good it is, versus the contributions made by the slave trade and their importance in history. After the presentation, the guide then stated she would give us some time to go through the museum and then left to get something from the kitchen.
Next thing we knew the rest of the patrons had left the museum and we could not locate the guide. Initially, we thought that we hadn’t heard her tell us where to meet for the rest of the tour which was supposed to include the slave quarters. Turns out that that was the end of our time with the guide. It was so strange. We went back to the tearoom to ask what was going on and were told that the flyer they had posted in their business no longer applied to what they were currently offering and promptly took the flyer down.
When we returned home, we did a little research about their business and found that the terms of their tours/presentations had changed from what they were continuing to advertise at their front desk. Based on the information on their website, we were overcharged by $10 (not including tip) for that particular presentation.
We did not receive the full service we paid for as the tour was sold to us based on what was advertised on the flyer at the desk. We had repeatedly pointed to the specific tour on the flyer when purchasing the tickets, so they knew exactly what we were expecting to get for our money. Overall, we left very disappointed and felt we were taken advantage of.

Absolutely stunning setting and our meals were delicious. It was a first time visit for 2 of our party of 5 and we all definitely will return! If you are anywhere near the Area you should visit the plantation and take a tour!!

Delicious food, served beautifully. Friendly service and a unique atmosphere and menu. Our second visit within 3months.

We have passed this historic house for 40 years and never had the time to visit until this week. Oh my, what we have missed. There is so much history to this house. It sits right on the North Santee river. HWY 17 buzzes past and you can easily miss the house due to the trees. The story of the beginnings of the house are fascinating if you love SC history. It does need paint/exterior work which I hope will get done soon. Hardly any changes have been made to the house since the 1700"s.
The grounds have live oaks and camelias and the house is beautifully furnished. The tour guide was outstanding.

The tea room staff and food were excellent. The house tour felt more like a political rant about the evils of slavery. The history of slavery was needed but he went on and on and circled back again.

We toured the plantation house. Our guide was very informative about the structure and how it was built and why it is still standing today. We learned a lot of different stuff that we've not heard at other historical buildings. The staff were all welcoming and so friendly. I had the traditional tea service and my husband had crab cakes. We were both very pleased with our choices. Overall, this was a great tour. The grounds and trees are magnificent.

The tour of the house was interesting and well done. Beautiful grounds to walk around, including a boardwalk along the river. There were Revolutionary War re-enactors on site the day we visited and they provided interesting information. We had a delicious lunch in the tea room. Nice visit!

My friend and I went to Hopseewee for the Souther tea. We have both attended the River Oak Cottage on multiple occasions for the tea. As usual the food was excellent and rivaled the tea service in high end hotels.

We did the combination house and museum tours. Our house guide, Yancy, gave the tour from a perspective of how hard it was to clear the swamp. Vennie, the museum guide explained the rice fields very well. The new museum was done well and focused on rice farming at Hopsewee. The owners of the property have a vision to tell an accurate story of the plantation.

My husband and I recently visited Hopsewee Plantation for the first time. The owner and employees do a great job bringing plantation life to you in a very real way. No romance, just facts. The docents are very knowledgeable and willing to answer all your questions. We did the Gullah Geechee tour, mansion tour and had lunch in their Tea Room. Excellent all the way.

We did a tour of the house and grounds. The tour guide, Yancey was very informative. We had lunch in the restaurant which was a wonderful compliment to the day. If you are in the area don't miss it!

Thank you for a charming and delightful day! I have always wanted to see Hopsowee, and I found it enchanting. My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed lunch at the Tearoom. Having the opportunity to meet you, Rayjean, and other staff certainly was the highlight of the day. I've already told two friends that I want to return with them. A visit to Hopsowee is a "must" for anyone who loves history and the charm of the Lowcountry.

We did the house and Gullah tour. Enjoyed both tours immensely. Bambi was very informative on the history of the house. The Gullah lady was well versed on the Gullah culture, and she made you feel comfortable answering your questions.
Enjoyed seeing the woodwork and brickwork of the time on the house. Also, the slave cabins were built out of cypress wood. Very good place for history buffs.

We celebrated a girlfriend’s special birthday at the Hopsewee Tea room! The atmosphere was perfect, the food was delicious and the service was exceptional.

My mom and I are locals. We decided to venture out and try new places we've never been. We loved visiting Hopsewee! The home was beautiful and the tour guide was very knowledgeable. I also recommend visiting the on site museum. It's so very worth it. I truly appreciate how hard the owners have worked to honor the memories of those that worked this plantation. To top it off, we had the most amazing lunch at the on site restaurant! I am a foodie... and living in Charleston leaves me with very high expectations. This did not disappoint!! I highly recommend that you make a trip up Hopsewee!!

this was a lovely property and the tour was good. The docent knew much history of the house. We chose to have lunch after and the choices were perfect for meat eaters fish eaters pescatarians and vegetarians.

We had an excellenttime and the tours were so informative.
I loved the museum tour with Vinnie and how she really made us feel what it was like back then and the house tour was excellent too.
I am going for a second tour in April with my other sister who missed this one.
Also, don't miss the wonderful lunches they have in the tea room. We all agreed that the food was excellent.
Loved it all.

It was amazing to see all the objects and the architecture predating the civil war. The tour guide, Bambi, was amazing. She knew her history phenomenally well and she shared her knowledge with lots of enthusiasm!

Enjoyed our house tour with Yancey very much! Very informative!
Also had lunch at the tea room and enjoyed that.
This has been on my bucket list for quite awhile and it did not disappoint!

Having lunch in the beautiful surroundings at Hopsewee takes you back in time. The food is delicious and the staff are welcoming. Make sure to purchase their cookbook before you leave, this way you can take a little bit of Hopsewee home until you can visit again.

Highly recommended for interesting, balanced, insightful tour of the plantation home. And a delicious lunch with excellent service at the tea room.

We were so looking forward to this visit and drove way out of our plans to find it. After getting over the sticker shock of the admission price and being ignored over the Tea luncheon process, we waited for our tour to start. Our tour guide introduced himself and then kept talking about his career, family, interests, social acquaintances, health, politics, etc. We had to ask questions to get him on task. He talked so much about everything but the place that we had to finish the tour upstairs on our own as the next tour group was waiting for him and he abandoned us. Overall, the plantation may be of interest to visit but we would advise spending time in Georgetown itself which has various options for tours.

Enjoyable, educational, tour by Yance our well informed tour guide, Plenty of information in one hour tour about the rice cultivation, land clearing by hand, all performed by the plantation slaves in the 1700 and 1800 hundreds on this beautiful piece of property south of Georgetown, SC on the banks of Santee river. I highly recommend it if you like history of this period in the US and discovering how and why Georgetown County in SC was the richest state in the WORLD at that time. Don't miss the Tea Room Dining for a meal. Excellent food excellent service.

My daughter and I went to tea and thoroughly enjoyed it. Each course was beautifully presented and delicious and the tea selection was extensive. The server was great as was the owner who gave us a bit of the family history. Definitely worth the trip from
Charleston/Mt Pleasant.

The grounds were absolutely beautiful. We had a great time on the tour with Elizabeth. She was very knowledgeable. It was amazing to learn about all the history this place holds.

I stopped at the plantation on my way to Myrtle Beach. It was wonderful! The gentleman who led our tour was extremely knowledgeable, with fun facts and humor. I enjoy history and learning whenever I can. I feel I walked away from Hopsewee with a newfound appreciation of life on a plantation.

Really appreciate the knowledgeable tour guide Miss Elizabeth gave us. She is well versed and super friendly. The grounds are beautiful and we were encouraged to take our time as we took it all in. Well done.

Enjoyed learning the role SC played in the Revolutionary War. The tour of the house is probably not fun for those under 5 years old as historic home etiquette usually requires no touching of objects or furniture. The tea room served delicious food and tea. The gift shop had a wide variety of items.

Wonderful way to spend an afternoon! Dined in the tea room for a wonderful lunch in a beautiful setting and then enjoyed the Hopseewee Plantation tour. Both were leisurely and we learned a lot about the history of the plantation. Excellence all around!

I live about an hour away from Hopsewee, and I try to come every month or so. This particular visit came after a bad week at work, and the desire for some peace and quiet and a little pampering. I made a reservation for the Tea Room in the afternoon, and spent the hours leading up walking the grounds, sitting by the Santee, and taking in the house porch views from the porch swing. Thoroughly enjoyed Linda's indigo dying demonstrations! Lunch was spectacular as always, I had an Ambrosia cocktail, Tea Savories (think little, bite sized, super delicious) - cucumber sandwiches, curried chicken on nilla wafers, oh my! China plates, silverware, a beautiful room with beautiful views. Staff was friendly and attentive. The history, the grounds, the food...pampered!

If you are visiting the area or live here and looking for something special to do this holiday season, a trip to Hopsewee is well worth the time. We had a great tour of the historical house. The docent was knowledgeable and had lots of interesting facts and stories - well worth the time! Then we had High Tea at the restaurant. Oh My! If you are a tea lover you will be impressed - best tea ever! The food was delicious and just what you would expect to find at Buckingham Palace! The regular menu is full of southern favorites. We are going back in the spring! River view was beautiful and we are looking forward to a nice stroll along the river walk in the spring.

When visiting the site, it was like taking a walk back into time but with knowledgeable guides to help you along the way. The grounds are lovely to stroll, and the house is chock-full of interesting facts--being restored to accurately reflect furniture and decor. This is a day trip that is well worth the visit, especially when you have lunch in the tearoom.

I had a wonderful time with my girlfriends at tea. There were 5 of us and everyone enjoyed the tea and the historical tours..

It was interesting to learn about the history, especially to learn how much the slaves did to fell the trees, build the house, and grow the rice. I grew up in New England and did now know much about this history The volunteer guide was EXCELLENT. The house is not handicap compliant..

We had a 1pm house tour . We enjoyed our tour The tour guide was very informative and knowledgeable . Afterwards we toured the grounds . We loved all the beautiful Live Oak tree's and the river front was so pretty and a nice breeze comes off the water . You can sit on the front porch in rocking chairs and view the river . The only downside to walking the grounds were the mosquitoes. They did have bug spray sat out in different locations for you to use if you wanted to use it . We had lunch reservations at the Tea room at 3 . There was 2 of us . We ordered the Shrimp and Grits it came with potato salad and fresh fruit and BBQ sandwich which came with potato salad , fresh fruit , we also ordered 2 pimento cheese biscuits and 2 sodas. With tip lunch was aprox $50.00 . We enjoyed our lunch , everything was good and we especially liked the biscuits. The staff were all very accommodating and nice . I definitely would recommend this tour .

Yea service was very good. The museum tour was a lecture on how evil white people are. I get it, but my ancestors were not here until the later 1800’s and never owned a slave. Skip the museum.

Make sure servers know what they are doing. Have been there many times but this time did not work out. Food good but that's all.

A charming tea room with an amazing menu. My husband had the mint lemonade. He stated it was too sweet.
We had the Southern sample dish.
Ample servings of Pirleau, macaroni and cheese, collard greens and pulled pork.
We also had a cup of the GinGin soup. We were not impressed with the soup since we felt it was too bland. Service staff was grand.
Historical tour was one of the best we have experienced. We learned so much! The docent's compassionate explanation of slavery was outstanding. Yancy McLeod is the historian. The museum was well worth the additional fee.

The house is a beautiful old Four Square building, full of history and information. The owners are gracious people, who have decorated it with period antiques and portraits. We were unable to take the Gullah tours at the time of our visit, but I would like to do that in the future.

Beautiful glimpse into SC history. Bambi was interesting and informative. The only disappointment was learning that none of the home furnishings were original or from the same period.

Met up with a good friend for a house tour and lunch. Enjoyable day. Beautiful grounds to enjoy. Tour was very informative and house in good repair.
Lunch was very tasty and reasonably priced while the room had lots of glass to look out over the lovely grounds.

My mom and I had lunch in the tea room that was wonderfully delicious. I had the southern sampler and I highly recommend it so you can get a little bit of everything to try. Also, the okra fritters are spectacular. Then we headed into the lobby of the tea room for a sweetgrass basket making class and made our own baskets! I will not complain about the price of them anymore since I found out how hard it was.

Yancy was our tour guide. He was very knowledgeable, passionate and funny and told good stories. He spoke of all the history heartache and hard labor that was done by slaves. He was very wise regarding our environment. Learned about the families that lived there. It was a good tour.

This is a review of the 15 dollar house tour. Nice house, biting bugs were terrible, interesting history but tour seemed rushed and furnishings along with other things did not compare to the other homes and plantations we have toured in SC. Nothing in the house is original to the home and no pictures can be taken inside. If we had it to do over again would have skipped the tour took pictures outside and had tea at the tea room. Kaminski home in Georgetown was more interesting it just did not have a signer of the declaration of independence born there and did not have slave cabins.

My family and I did the museum/house combo tour. It took us around 2-2.5 hours. Our guide was very knowledge and created a good overall sense of what it must have been like during that time period for all. She was very neutral and non biased and stated facts. I would highly recommend!

Two senior sisters. We were hoping to be able to have lunch at the tea room and were fortunate enough to get a table. We both had sandwiches and tea which were delicious. I loved the little teaspoon from the New York World’s Fair to serve honey. When we arrived we paid for the “museum” and were kind of sent back and forth while waiting for our time for lunch. While the “museum “ is interesting, we found it a bit unorganized and very over priced. It’s mostly a walk through display with a narrator at the beginning of of the “tour”. We found the narrator did not welcome comments or questions as it put off her script. We wish we would have bought a pass to the house for $10 rather than the $20 for the “museum”. The property is gorgeous and we did enjoy our time there but found the museum a bit pricey. The next day we visited Brookgreen Gardens, acres and acres of gardens and spent the whole day there for $20.

Had high expectations for tea service based on other reviews. Online booking was quick and easy. However, when we arrived there was no one to greet us for about 10 minutes… there were people serving but we were not acknowledged and no one even made any eye contact! Unfortunately the food itself was sort of average. There wasn’t any one item that was “omg this is so good!”. The first course was a mix - the chicken curry was good, the salmon mousse served on a ritz cracker (nothing special), half the quiche was refrigerator-cold but other half warm. The second course was a supposed to be one of three flavors of scones, but by the time of our reservation (11:30 am), all that was left was plain. It was tasty but would have been nice to try something else, especially since our reservation was fairly early in the day. The final course was sweets that were just that- sweet but not so flavorful. There was an extensive assortment of teas but unfortunately it was hard to differentiate the flavors between them. Overall a disappointing experience.

The tour of the home was fantastic. It has been well maintained and the history of this plantation is fascinating. The grounds are spectacular and well kept. A must see!

A very nice tea room located on a historical site . You can visit the house, walk along the river and end at the tea room where you can enjoy lowcountry food or a delicious high tea in a cozy environment .

My wife and I visited Hopsewee Plantation while visiting Georgetown. Hands down, the best planation or house tour we've ever had. Our guide Yancy, was a wealth of information on building techniques, history, architecture and artifacts. His truthful description of the extraordinary hardships endured by African slaves clearing cypress swamps for rice cultivation was refreshing. The unique topography and 18th century building techniques means that the house has never been flooded, incredible for a three-century old house in the aptly named "South Carolina Lowcountry".
After the tour, we had a "Southern Tea" at the River Cottage. The tea included a variety of delicious savories, a scone (including homemade lemon curd and clotted cream) and three small sweets. We chose Hopsewee blend tea, which had a unique flavor. When the pot ran dry, we were invited to sample a different tea (we chose Buckingham Palace). Our server was delightful, and brought us information on the plantation, including recipes. The setting looks out on the majestic live oaks and the sparkling North Santee River beyond.
Highly recommend.
It is worthwhile to consider another nearby rice plantation, Hampton. Its history is equally fascinating; because it is a state park, admission to Hampton is relatively inexpensive.
Thanks, Yancy, for a memorable tour!

Hopsewee tour was interesting. Bambi was our tour guide. She was very friendly and informative. Everyone we met was very cordial and polite. We enjoyed our tour, the home, furnishings, etc. However, I think we would have liked more information of the moment in time. The actual operation and life of the residents and slaves. I think there were moments where the time could have been used to explain more. We know the tea room is very popular here. We didn’t have time on our agenda to stay for lunch. However, I ordered the hummingbird cake to go and it was delicious.
This plantation is about 13 miles from the downtown Harbor walk and historic homes.
Definitely make time to do them both.

Hopsewee is a nice example of an antebellum plantation. Beautiful house, grounds and location. Out tour guide was very knowledgeable and brought the history of SC, locate area and Hopsewee to life. A must visit.

We arrived at 11:45 and we thought the 12:00 tour might be full, but to our surprise we were the only ones. So we had a personal tour of the house and it was really worth the money. Our tour guide, Elizabeth, was very knowledgeable. We enjoyed her stories of the history of the house and the previous owners. The weather was perfect and we enjoyed our visit here very much.

Excellent low country platter for lunch. Low country cooking is a unique experience. I hope you will have a speaker on low country cooking sometime. I really enjoyed the tour of the house and the
speaker on the Gullah culture. A great day for me.

The Southern tea experience at Hopsewee is a real awesome experience! We had a group of 8 and we did the Southern Tea. You need reservations and they have slots of 1 hour and 15 minutes, which is plenty of time. They time bringing out your selections of teas and the treats that go with the tea. You get a lot of things and you have plenty of time to talk and taste several different kinds of teas. They brought us four pots of different teas we selected and we all tried them and then we got four other kinds of teas with four different pots the next go round. You get to drink more tea than you want actually, although it was fun trying all the different kinds. The gift shop has some cute things in it and the dining area is really nice. They also have tours available for an additional fee of the plantation home. I believe the original plantation owner was Thomas Lynch and he was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence! you can walk around the grounds some and it great for photos!

The tea room dining and grounds and gift shop were nice. But our 45 min tour was rushed and the speaker seemed very irritated. The group felt more like they were being advised as first graders. There was more to see, than what our tour time allowed and the speaker wanted no one lingering or prolonging it. She said " did you not know your tour is only 45 minutes?" We really appreciated the history and would have like more of it... especially for the Revolutionary value of it.

Three of us ladies did the Tea at Hopseewee which was lovely and plentiful. Highly recommend this combined with touring the house and/or museum.

Enjoyed the House tour and the lunch at the Tea room. Would do it again! I wish we could also have attended the Gullah tour, but time did not permit...will definitely have to return for it!

We went to Hopsewee specifically for the Southern High Tea as a birthday celebration. The High Tea was outstanding with great little sandwiches, scones, a variety of little cakes, two pots of tea each, etc. Service was great and very friendly, and they even provided a birthday "balloon" for the table. It was far superior to any of the much pricier High Teas we've tried in Charleston. Plus, the surrounding grounds of the Plantation are beautiful. We'll be back!

We went to Hopsewee to enjoy a good meal and experience a part of America's history. The food and service were excellent and we Stayed to take in 2 tours.

A wonderful way to spend an hour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and encouraged questions. The plantation is beautiful and every room has history hanging on its walls.

My daughter and I had a delightful afternoon tea at Hopsewee Plantation's tea room. Besides the scrumptious food and wide range of teas, the service was top-notch. We will definitely be back every time we are in the area.

What a beautiful place! We had a delicious lunch and so much fun making baskets with “Miss” Vera! The atmosphere was so relaxing with a friendly, welcoming staff!

Our tour guide, Bambi, was very knowledgeable and entertaining. We learned things that we had no idea happened. It was very enjoyable. Our lunch at the Tea Room was delicious. The shrimp and grits were excellent. All in all, a very pleasant experience!

Went for Tea with group of 5 friends that have been doing tea together for years. We all agreed the tea experience was wonderful. Beautiful view, great food and tea. Service was excellent. Well worth the drive from Charleston!

This is a must see if you love the Declaration of Independence and it’s history. Bambi was an amazing tour grade. Jenna was an amazing server in the tea room. So many great varieties of teas.

Yancey was a wonderful guide very knowledgeable and informative about the houses history did not sugar coat about the slave contributions to the owners wealth

NO Chef...Hostess was rude and condescending...a TOTAL disappointment.
No consideration for pre-made lunch reservations, Chef was ill...ok understandable
but NO backup for guests.. we should have received a call or text informing us of options

We go to the plantation 3-4 times each year and always include the tea house in our visit. Such a beautiful place with an interesting history. The staff is always friendly and helpful. This is a must-do while in the area!

We really enjoyed the grounds and the story of the Lynche family. Quite interesting and the historian who did the tour was great!

Amazing place and tour. The guide was so polite and knowledgeable. Was like stepping back in time. Enjoyed myself immensely! The tea and lunch was delicious. The grounds is absolutely gorgeous.

My husband and I arrived later than we had hoped but were still able to enjoy a delightful lunch in the beautiful Tea Room and were then treated to our own tour of the house by a kind and very informative guide. Thank you for providing such a beautiful place to visit! Highly recommend!

People were so wonderful and food was delicious as always! Been going since 2015 and it is always good!

Coastal SC is FULL of former plantation/museum houses All are unique and fascinating. What sets Hopsewee apart is the intimate size and knowledge of the tour guides. For only $20-25. We were educated and entertained about an important part of our colonial history. The adjoining restaurant offered (relatively) reasonable meals and sandwiches in a relaxed environment. Considering the prices of similar area historic attractions, this was a bargain!

A group of us ladies had a grand time at the Afternoon Tea. It was done so elegantly. All of the food for the tea was most delicious and so beautifully served. The table setting, tea service and the atmosphere was fitting for the Tea. Staff was so hospitable and answered any questions we had as well as having on the menu gluten free items. I am coming back with my family for the Afternoon Tea in the near future. It was everything we expected and then some. It was also nice to have met the owner,Mr Franklin. Thank y'all for a great afternoon.

It’s a beautiful piece of property and the staff was amazing. Our tour guide, Bambi made the tour relaxing and informative. After the tour I do suggest taking time to walk the property and have a tea. I do think that it was more expensive than the value we got out of it. It has a lot of history and should be treated as a historical site and not an opportunity for the owners to make money. I understand they want to make a profit, but I would suggest they add more significant historical content or a cup of tea for the money.
Glad I went but there are other plantation options in the area. For the money spent we could have gone to two others in the area.

We just returned from our first trip to Georgetown, SC and the highlight of the trip was definitely lunch at the Hopsewee Tea Room.
My wife had the salad plate. I had the full tea. Everything was absolutely wonderful. The meal was made even better by the oustanding service by Jenna who waited on us.

The tour was of house and not of the time more info on current ownership. Would of loved to of learned more of time period and traditions. Was not interested in owners. Would of loved to of heard what life was like and how slavery impacted the traditions of the plantation.

Beautiful venue just don’t plan to eat at the little restaurant. Food was terrible and our waitress didn’t seem to care to the point of being rude. Didn’t apologize for the food or offer refund and it was expensive.

The staff, the tour guides, the lunch in the tear room were all delightful. We were met with grace, joy and beauty in every way.

Do NOT reserve the southern tea through through Fare Harbor—25% fee added over menu price! But, the tea was delightful and delicious. The home and grounds are beautiful, and the history is quite interesting. The only disappointment was that the furnishings are not original, and in some cases very anachronistic. Still, worth a visit.

What a great venue for a bridal brunch! The River Oak Cottage was the perfect setting. We began with a mimosa bar and then onto three courses of savories, scones, and sweets all served on beautiful china with pots of delicious tea. The grounds are beautiful and Rae Jean, the proprietor, was super accommodating and easy to work with. Highly recommend!

We had lunch in the tea room and it was extra special. We especially loved the demonstration of how to wax flowers. The demonstrator was kind enough to give each of us one of the flowers that was a highlight. The young woman who showed us the Rice museum, was exceptional in every way. She was friendly and informative and a real delight. The gentleman who gave the tour of the house was a retired Professor. He was friendly and informative, and obviously loved his work.

Excellent guide, very informative. Tea Room had a wide variety of choices. Our food was delicious and our waitress was fabulous! I would return to eat at there again.
The down side is that they did not notify us until we checked in that due to a bus tour, they were pushing our reservation back 30 minutes! We don’t live around the corner and it was a cold dreary day - there is not enough indoor seating or space for people to sit.

This was my second time visiting Hopsewee in a two month span. Some girlfriends took me there for my birthday and I returned again in March. The Hopsewee Plantation experience is historic, beautiful, and delicious. I especially came back to see the new Museum depicting the journey and lives of the West African people who were enslaved by the plantation owners. Our tour guide, Loretta is passionate and knowledgeable in the history of the people who made rice king and plantation owners rich. I experienced her presentation twice and each time was moved by her stories. The museum itself has dioramas depicting life on the plantation as well as artifacts from the site. The plantation house tour is a nice addition to a day at Hopsewee with an expert guide. I highly recommend staying for lunch or tea as it is excellent. The food is delicious and the servers are attentive to you as a guest. Hopsewee is now on my tour for my friends and family.

We had a group of approximately 35 women. We had 4 delicious menu items to choose from ahead of time. The food was excellent. The service was great! The ambience of the Tea House was lovely. The owner/hostess was very gracious and told us about how the Tea House came to be. The whole experience was wonderful!!

High tea at Hopsewee Plantation was wonderful. Great food, great service, beautiful environment Wonderful way to spend an afternoon

We highly recommend the afternoon tea! Our server Deb was wonderful! The teas were awesome you get to try two different teas, most high teas only give you one. The food was great. The restaurant food going by us also looked delicious!

We had lunch at the River Oak Cottage Teahouse. An exceptional meal and delightful service. Very reasonably priced. We will definitely look forward to returning.

I experienced the home and the dining room . The tour was wonderful and just long enough. The manager at the dining home was wonderful a great place to visit

Property has a lot of history and location is beautiful. Tour of main house enlightling and interesting.
Tea Time very disappointing scones were terrible ( undercook and more like a cookie ).
Let the cook owner know and she did not have the courtesy to come out and speak to us as we requested, ( Very unprofessional )

We enjoyed our lunch at Hopsewee and the bonus was being able to watch the indigo dying class taking place just outside the window we were seated next. We will definitely come back to do the glass. Only negative thing was the wait staff trying hurrying us through lunch - an we did not linger. One of our plates was taken away prematurely and we were able to catch the server before it was too late to get the take out container we needed.

The Gullah presentation was great and informative. Had paid and scheduled tea service at 1p.m. Got seated after 2p.m. Was told some items were unavailable. Felt like they did not want to serve people/ancestors of slaves. Food and tea was below average.

We truly enjoyed everything about this trip. The trees flanking the entrance, the drive up to the beautifully kept house, the staff to greet and welcome you, and then there is Bambi-what a wealth of information!!! We loved her guided tour-she was amazing and filled with so much information regarding the history of not only the plantation, but also the area, and our Country during that time frame.

We took the Guided Historical Landmark Tour and the Gullah Geechee Presentation. The house tour was worth it and interesting. However, I especially liked the Gullah Geechee Presentation. I found it to be extremely educational about the history of the area and the Gullah roots and culture. After the tours, we enjoyed a fine lunch at the Hopseewee River Oak Cottage. We were there from about noon to 3:30 PM.

This is a lovely place to visit and best of all to have lunch. Unfortunately, the management likes to make fun of northerners on social media and consequently ignites demeaning discussions about our northern friends. Talk about "biting the hand that feeds you." Save yourself the fake southern hospitality or simply be forewarned.

I can't say enough wonderful things about the Indigo Dyeing Workshop my friends and I attended last week at Hopsewee Plantation! Linda (the instructor) made our entire experience very fun and informative. Even though it was a hot humid day with periods of rain, Linda thoughtfully prepared our work space on the covered back porch with a huge fan, so we were very comfortable the entire time. We learned so much, and we were all thrilled with the beautiful pieces we created. Linda even gave us great recommendations for places to eat on our way home. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a great way to spend the afternoon!

Beautiful Historic House with Yancey as our tour guide. the museum with a 3 minute film had enslaved families names listed on the entry wall.We then had a delicious luncheon at the tea room. Frank Beattie the owner even joined us at our table! Such an interesting man & what a privilege it was to spend valued time with him. Frank’s wife Raejean prepares the meals herself for their guest! A true memorable day! One we will remember for a long time.

Elizabeth was the tour guide; she was very knowledgeable. Interesting history regarding this plantation and the area, especially with one of the Declaration of Independence co-sponsors. The house was much smaller than I expected, but when considering that all the wood was harvested locally and cut into boards by hand, an amazing accomplishment in the mid 1700s.
Regardless of your opinion about the period of enslavement of human beings, it is important to study and understand the history…lest we forget.

This was our first trip to Hopsewee Plantation. I made reservations for lunch to start the day off. Lunch was very good. We ordered the Lowcountry Sampler which included pulled pork, pirleau, collard greens, mac & cheese, sweet potato casserole, and a pimento cheese biscuit. It was delicious and very filling. I ordered a mimosa drink that was featured on the menu, which was extremely delicious. After lunch, we went on a tour of the plantation home. The lady was extremely knowledgeable about the history of the plantation home and the current owners. After our tour, we went back to the tea room, where we had lunch, and we ordered dessert and tea. The Hopsewee brand tea was very tasty. We had a chocolate chip scone, served with cottage, cream and lemon curd, which was so tasty. We also tried the stout chocolate cake which was extremely good. Upon leaving the tea room, before heading home, I stopped in the cute little gift shop where I purchased two boxes of the Hopsewee tea bags and a lovely pair of earrings. The prices are very reasonable. The grounds of the Hopsewee plantation are just beautiful and I took a lot of pictures. I will definitely come back there again to check out the museum and other tours that they offer. The ladies in the gift shop are very pleasant and our server was very good and knowledgeable. It was a great day!

The Tour was good and our tour guide was very informative. We also enjoyed our lunch in the tea room.

Our guide Elizabeth took us through 3 levels of the amazingly restored home. She delivered a lot of information about life in the area, pre revolutionary war to present time. The museum, tea house, gift shop and grounds all presented additional information that made the visit interesting and informative. We spent about two hours on the grounds.

We toured yesterday (10/22/22), with elderly parentals and a friend with mobility issues. Everyone got around just fine, we all love history, our tour guide was knowledgable and lunch in the tearoom was charming and delicious! We got the lovely surprise of Mrs. Beattie manning the cash register...We discovered her identity on the tour, and she autographed her cookbook! Take some extra time to sit on the swing facing the river.

Our docent Bambi was witty, smart and obviously committed to providing a thorough and succinct introduction to the plantation institution, and the lives of enslaved Africans who were exploited in every way to build it into a vast financial engine for white colonials and early Americans. A true eye-opener!
After a lovely and delicious lunch, we were further edified by the Gullah history by Kim. We left whole lot edified and encouraged that despite the efforts of a vocal minority of oligarchs and politicians intent on denying true American history and moving us backward, the truth will prevail and we will progress ahead to become what America is called to be!

Friends and I went to the Tea and had a fabulous experience!! They had 2 full pages of tea selections, delicious tea sandwiches, scones and desserts !! The staff is so friendly and service was excellent !! Highly recommend going for the Tea!!

This was our second visit to Hopsewee Plantation. The first time was good, but this visit was very disappointing. We both ordered Southern Tea service and an appetizer of pimento cheese biscuits. The scones and biscuits were not fresh and tasted like they had been microwaved. The hot teas were served luke-warm and did not even dissolve honey. The plantation is a beautiful property and the tour was interesting.

The grounds and house are beautiful! The staff was courteous and friendly, however the service was extremely slow…took almost an hour to get our food and we had a reservation. The food was ok. Not great. The full tea looked like maybe that was a better choice, so if we go back we’ll do that next time.

Beautiful location with proper high tea. Ambrosia mimosa was delicious! Exceptional customer service. Our Guide for the House Tour was well informed and we learned so much history about the Plantation.

We had a fabulous time at Hopsewee Plantation! The grounds and buildings were terrific and the guides were some of the best we've ever had! Thanks Bambi and Vinie, you were both very informative and easy to interact with! We enjoyed the house tour and the museum more because of you both! We had the tea service at the café to celebrate my daughter's birthdays, and it was wonderful! Thank you to all the wait staff for their terrific service! Thank you all for the accommodation of a mobility challenged person! We highly recommend this as a place to visit!

Our Guide at the house, Yancey, was simply the best. He is a wealth of knowledge and filled with enthusiasm and passion for the history! So lucky he was part of our experirnce!

This property is privately owned by a family who clearly want to make people of today ‘think’ about slavery from the past.
The property host tours, weddings and tea time meals for lunch.
You can walk the grounds and explore the new museum on your own. This is a must see experience. See what you can based on the fees your willing to pay and the time you have available.

I think this tour can be great if a few things are tweaked. I liked the tour guide, but I found her to be a little too sarcastic at times. I agree with another review here that there was more time spent debunking history than discussing the family associated with the home. I brought my mother (85) and two daughters in their 20s and we all enjoyed it, but I will say there was a noticeable difference in how the younger and older crowds are treated. My daughters went into the tea room ahead of me for our reservation, and the elder lady at the front immediately went after them to find out why they were in there as if they didn’t belong. I witnessed this and put the hostess’ mind at ease. This made her softer and treat us all more hospitably. Also, we spent money in the gift shop and the hostess liked that. I’m not a fan of prejudice.

The tour was very good and informative. The tour guide, Yancey, gave a great presentation on the house, the plantation, history of the area, and background of the owners. Yancey was very personable and easy to talk to.

We toured the house with Bambi who was extremely knowledgeable about the plantation's history and both the Civil and Revolutionary War. We learned a lot!
The tearoom after was much fun. The food was great and the servers were very kind.

Both the tour guide and the other workers on the property were a wealth of knowledge. One young man stopped and talked with us for 15 minutes about the property. You could tell he loved his job!

We live in SC and enjoy taking our visitors to Hopsewee for lunch or Southern Tea. Make your reservations and enjoy!

We started the tour with the Gullah guide. She was friendly, informative and helpful. There was so much about the Gullah culture that I wasn't aware of.
After Gullah tour we met Bambi at the house and she shared many things about that time that I wasn't taught. She has a wonderful sense of humor that really brought the tour to life.
Once the tour was finished we had tea in the Tea House and it's definitely a stop you have to make!

The visit to Hopseww Plantstion was very informative. The grounds are beautiful and they offer a few different tours and activities. In addition, the tea house serves many assorted teas and a full tea service , as well as many delicious lunch specialties. The cakes were incredible and baked every day by the plantation owner. It was such a special day with my family. I highly recommend you visit .

5 of us drove down from NC. We did the house tour and lunch at the tea cottage. We enjoyed hearing the history and wish the tour lasted longer because there is so much more information to hear.
Our lunch was fabulous as well as our server, Deb.

Absolutely beautiful experience. Met the owner who was so gracious. Food was delicious...would suggest the sampler plate and the hummingbird cake (which 6 of us shared). Grounds were beautiful and well kept. Home tour guide was very informative. Would highly recommend a visit.

Outstanding, all the staff were friendly and helpful, and provided great knowledge. The facility was clean and well laid out. The lunch in the tea room was excellent. I’ll return again, I recommend this highly.

Great way to learn about SC. Tour guide was very knowledgeable. Estate was beautiful. Planning to go back to Tea Room & Gullah part of tour.

We visited the Cottage Tea Room and had the tea service for four. This was my third time visiting; the friends with me had never been. The mini food bites during the three courses were delicious and the teas were so very satisfying. I can’t think of a better place to visit and relax with friends. The view of the plantation is beautiful and the whole atmosphere gives a sense of being set apart from daily life. It is a truly unique experience. The staff are professional and very nice; I love the small gift shop that allows guests to take home their favorite tea! I will continue to recommend the Hopsewee Tea Cottage to friends. Each time I return, I leave with a sense of joy!

Vera Manigault conducted an interesting and educational workshop. I recommend this experience for locals as well as tourists. My "salad sampler" lunch in the Tea Room was delicious. Thank you for offering this workshop.

The gift shop attendant is so RUDE and grumpy. Don’t go at 3:00. She’ll be eating a snack and will be REALLY annoyed you’re there to disturb her. The house is beautiful. The grounds and history are lovely. We would have come back for tea at the cottage but not if we had to see grumpy annoyed lady.

Tour guide and presenter were excellent. An enjoyable lunch and wine by the river. Our waitress was superb!

The tour at Hopsewee Plantation is perfect for someone who is interested in learning more about life on a rice plantation. The additional options to weave sweet bread baskets or have a piece of pie make it completely enjoyable.

Very gracious. Great trip. We really enjoyed the basket weaving and the tea. Also Bambi was an amazing guide for the plantation house.

We did the house tour and then had tea in the River Oak Cottage. Our tour guide, Elizabeth, was very knowledgeable and informative. The house is small enough to tour for people with slight disabilities. You will need to be able to navigate stairs to thoroughly enjoy the entire tour. Lovely light lunch in the River Oak Cottage Room. Highly recommend the lemonade and the house blend iced tea! After lunch we strolled the grounds, and sat on the swing by the river.

I expected this to be more like other plantation visits. It was very basic. Our guide, Bambi, was interesting. Although we did not have time to take the Gulla Geechee tour, the woman who gives the tour spent some time with us telling us about the plantation - she was knowledgeable and friendly and we wished we'd had time to hear her presentation. Our welcome" in the gift shop/reception was not very warm and left a poor first impression. Greeter greeted us by telling us she was alone and therefore very busy - good morning to you, too! (Bambi also told us she was not supposed to be working that day - again, doesn't make for a good impression telling us no one wants to work there). I made a small purchase whose total price ended in 6 cents. I only had bills, no change. She was quite disturbed that I had no change. Told me should could only give me .95 cents and that I was wiping her out of her change completely. Since we were the first customers of the day, I'd call that poor planning to have a cash drawer with no coins. Or maybe a "give one take one" cup is needed. Or skips the 6 cents instead of suggesting that I should skip the 94 cents. All in all, not impressed and would not recommend.

We thoroughly enjoyed the mansion and slave quarters tours .
We also enjoyed the High Tea and looking forward to seeing you advertised in the Tea Time magazine

The experience was educational and fun. Our tour guide, Yancey McLeod, was able to relay the history of the land and the house in an interesting manner. He was one of the best tour guides we have ever experienced.

A wonderful and beautifully restored plantation. The plantation house and museum are filled with history and artifacts found on the grounds. We took part in making a Sweetgrass basket and dined in the lovely tearoom. Any trip to the South Carolina Lowcountry MUST include Hopsewee!

We had to wait for someone to greet us and the person was not friendly and imo should not deal with the public. There were two people who entered after us who were addressed first and they indicated we were there first. She had issues locating our name on the reservation list. She said follow me which we did and once in the tea room she turned around and said I wasn’t talking to you. Evidently she meant the people who were seated in the area before the tea room entrance. They didn’t follow so obviously didn’t realize she was speaking to them. We found our table and sat down. Our waitstaff was friendly and helpful and the meal was tasty. We walked the grounds a bit before the class and it was a lovely day for a stroll. The class imo was too large, 13 of us. Miss Vera did a great job having to deal with so many of us but there was more down time waiting for her to provide support because of the class size which is why the class time was 3 hours. I would recommend as it was a nice outing with an old and new friend, just set proper expectations.

My husband and I toured Hopsewee Plantation house and then ate a delicious lunch in the Tea Room. The owner and staff were very gracious during our visit. We will definitely visit again!🙂

It is a beautiful place to see and the tea is a must to experience. Only hiccup was that they were out of their house blend of tea when we visited. They were very gracious with time and the tea service was excellent. We will be visiting again just to have tea! Scones were scrumptious. Kudos to the chef!

To explore a plantation with friends and we were pleased with food and plantation tour. Would loved to have had more time to read about house.

We took a last minute detour to Hopsewe Plantation based on a recommendation. The greeting hostess was very gracious and helpful. We were able to connect with a house tour group and were by Bambi's, the tour guide/docent, knowledge of good sound historical facts. She inspired us to do some deeper research into our American history. We could tell she had a strong appreciation for her American heritage as a D.A.R.

Not as "big" a destination as I'd have thought. Lovely grounds & tour. Tea service very disappointing. Poor service, out of a lot of items and chaotic.

7/2013.Try Butterfly Cake.Would go back if opened after new year 2023. Tour guide was respectful and gave dates of enslaved people who worked at Hopsewee Plantation when asked.

Got there a few mins late but they moved us around to have lunch first, The Gullah Tour afterwards and then the house tour. Food was wonderful, we both had the salad plate and a piece of caramel cake. Gullah tour was very good.. Learned a lot from her. And lastly the house tour. Great tour guide, learned about a SC signer of the Declaration who signed in place of his father that was sick. Also learned that the signing was not done all at the same time. They moved it around for security reasons during the war. Also this was once a working plantation. Rice and Indigo were grown here. Santee River is front and center. It was hot outside but the house is air conditioned. 3 floors and a brick cellar. All beautifully restored. Learned a lot.

The house tour by Elizabeth was amazing. We have visited many plantations and this tour was far the best. She gave history in a truly informative and absorbing fashion. From the old glass in the windows to the paintings and memorabilia on the wallls and in the cellar, it was so very interesting.
There was also a cute Tea Room.

There were 7 of us who came and thoroughly enjoyed out experience - some newbies did the tour and we all had lunch. A beautiful day and lots of fun.

We did the High Tea and Tour of the House!!!
The Tea Room was sooo adorable and our waitress Candace was GREAT!!! So friendly and excellent service!!!!
The House Tour was AMAZING and our Guide Yancy was THE BEST he is soooo knowledgeable and adds humor to the tour!!! He made the home come aliv with his stories and the past and history of the home!!!
GREAT EXPERIENCE

Free parking on site. The tour was $45 for three people. Yancy was an excellent tour guide, providing in-depth information about the site, SC history, and even tidbits about himself! Tour lasted a little over an hour. Worth doing if you are in the area or interested in historic houses/properties.

Beautiful plantation, so relaxing. Hospitably and food was outstanding. Everyone in the group of 30 people would love to visit again.

We so loved our visit to Hopsewee Plantation. We had been passing by this Historic Site for over 30 years and never stopped in. We had a great tour with knowledgeable guide Bambi and a delightful lunch! Definitely we will visit again and take in one of their education sessions.

Great visit. The guide was great with lots of information. We had a great time. Had small children with us so didn't get to visit the tea room or the gift shop.

Our guide, Elizabeth, was very informative and professional. The house itself had an interesting history and provides a glance at home decor from the Colonial period. We didn’t do some of the other activities and we were unsuccessful at having lunch due to them apparently being understaffed. It seemed a little pricey, but we enjoyed the tour.

We were in North Myrtle Beach for a spring vacation. Since we love old houses and history, we always try to visit historical sites wherever we go. Hopsewee Plantation did not disappoint. The docent did a great job and it was amazing that the house was so well preserved. Very enjoyable visit. Our only comment would be that it would have been nicer if we had more time to read all the little historical postings around the house; we just felt a little rushed.

Linda is super knowledgeable and although the house to tour is relatively small the tour as a whole including lunch was a lovely way to spend the afternoon. Lunch was delicious set in a charming room!

We booked the house tour, the Gullah Geechee presentation, and the tea service. We loved everything! Looking forward to visiting again.

The tour was about 45 min from Myrtle Beach and definitely worth the trip. Beautiful grounds, tea room and interesting guided historical tour.

What a perfect place for a girls get together! Our group of old friends from Charleston spent a lovely afternoon at this beautiful paradise, set back in time by the river and under ancient oak trees, we had lunch at the Tea Room, took the tour and took lots of photos! Places like Hopsewee are few and far between. The owners and staff are very friendly, be sure to visit!

Tea room lunch
We were met by a woman in charge of seating who was not welcoming. Poor wait staff and sat for long periods of time. Need to train entire staff on customer care. Would not go back.

A few of us “hens” gathered to celebrate my daughter and the upcoming arrival of my granddaughter. The place was beautiful, the food was outstanding, and the service was
wonderful. I highly recommend Hopsewee tea room for a lunch. We can hardly wait to return for high tea. I had the shrimp creole and it was amazing!

Our house tour was interesting. But pricey, go done to the Hampton state park for more information and more chill environment. Our lunch was tasty but don’t expect to be welcomed with open arms. We where treated as we an inconvenience to as for service with out a reservation. We never did our museum tour even though we paid for it. The lady who was presenting was more than rude and made us feel very uncomfortable due to not giving the amount of time she needed “to tell her story”. We were never told there was a certain amount of time we had to be at or in the museum. Overall very unhappy with our visit. Like I said earlier, go down to Hampton state park for a less expensive and more enjoyable, knowledge experience.

We enjoyed the tea immensely. The food and tea is excellent and the staff superior. The tea room is lovely and sets the mood. This is my second visit and would recommend it for tea or lunch. Also nice are the grounds and the view of the North Santee River. We didn’t tour the plantation house as we had done that on a previous visit.

Following our 5 start lunch, including the delicious Ambrosia Mimosa, in the Tea Room with excellent service by Hannah we proceeded to hear the very interesting presentation regarding the Gullah Culture by Vinnie and then on to a great tour of the house by Docent Elizabeth. What a wonderful afternoon for my out of state guest. Next time I have company we will be visiting.

Thank you Raejean for a beautiful rainy day excursion from Charleston. My mom and I truly enjoyed every moment reliving our Southern roots and history to boot! The food, tea, cocktails and hospitality were a trip down memory lane. G-d bless you, one and all! Karen McDaniel - Charleston Tour Guide

Docent was very informative and interesting. It was nice that she was open to questions and did not rush the tour.

Everyone was very nice, but this plantation home is NOT in its original condition and has been GREATLY modified...Kitchen has granite countertops, a full size refrigerator, etc. Private owner has put up family photos all other the walls, curios have personal items in them, including Disney characters, etc.
There are so many truly original plantation homes to visit, I would not put this one on your list of to dos.

We visited Hopsewee on a rainy day after leaving Charleston. We managed to squeeze in lunch at the tea room before our tour although we didn't have reservations -- on a busier day, you'd definitely need reservations. (We split a Lowcountry Sampler, which was quite good.) The tour lasted about an hour and our guide was very informative about the house and its history. Current owners lived in the house and renovated it before moving to a different home nearby, so the furniture is largely what they felt was period-appropriate to decorate with. There seemed to be many special events available at other times of the year, so check the website before you go to see if you might be able to participate in one of them.

The Hopsewee Plantation is an amazing location. To be able to walk around a plantation house that is older than our country is so surreal. We participated in Tea Service, Plantation House Tour, and the Gullah Geechee presentation. The English Tea Serving in the Tea Room. It was quite good even if you're not that into tea. We had fun with it. The structures on the property were amazing. I wish the tour guides would have had a scripted presentation better depicting life on the plantation for the owners, operators, and slaves. If you want to know anything specific be prepared to ask a lot of questions. The presentations were not very good and kind of an off the cuff rambling of things for both the house tour and the Gullah Gitchee.

We had our wedding at Hopsewee. Perhaps one of the most cost effective venues to have a wedding. They offer turnkey weddings that include the venue, rentals, food, and alcohol at an extremely affordable price. We were blown away by the hospitality Raejean provided and how beautiful the property was. The food provided was absolutely amazing. The staff were super friendly and attentive. The service they provide would easily cost triple or more if you wanted the same thing in Charleston or other cities.

We had a girls Southern Tea. It was a very nice experience and the staff was very friendly. The food was all acceptable. The quantity was a lot so no one went away hungry.

We really enjoyed our whole experience at the Planation. Had lunch in the Tea Room. Would recommend the package tour of the planation and the museum.Lunch was delicious

We recently went to Hopsewee Plantation for afternoon tea and to visit the small museum located nearby. The tea was very gracious with tablecloths on each table. There was a large variety of teas available. The tea was served in small pots. The food and service were excellent. There is a small gift shop where you may purchase the Hopsewee Special Blend.
There is an extra charge to visit the museum. Here the history of growing rice and slavery in this area are well presented. Other activities are available according to your interests.

It was a great tour and very interesting. The tour guide Yancey was very knowledgeable. Definitely worth visiting.

Enjoyable visit with an out-of-town friend. Great tour guide, grounds are beautiful. The house itself was much smaller than expected. We opted to also include the Southern Tea and very happy we did. Exactly what we expected.

I booked a tea at the tea house for some out of town & local guests. We had 4 adults & 3 children. When I booked I spoke a couple of times to the people at the tea house checking how to order the teas ahead and what the childs tea conisisted of. We were seated pretty soon after we arrived but from then on the service was terrible. We had to ask for everything we needed. One of the ladies never got the light tea service that she ordered however she was the only one that received a tea cup in the beginning. None of the other Southern teas were as stated, after the 1st portion of those teas we were not served anything else. I don't believe the teas were made with tea leaves but a few tea bags in a large pot of water. You are suppose to get a different tea with each part of your tea but that never happened. From the waitress to the cook to the manager they all had an attitude about we should have been more patient because they had more customers than they expected & did not have enough of the food that was listed on the menus or enough help. One party told us that they had been there for over two hrs. The manager finally told us she would not charge us for our tea & we could leave something if we chose to. Since we never were addressed again nor were we served any of the other parts of the tea service we left.

I took a girlfriend for a lunch at Hopsewee Tea Room. We ate outside on the lawn and our fabulous server “Joy” was top notch. We were celebrating my recent birthday and “Joy” would sing “Happy Birthday” every time she came to our table. We had special luncheon at a wonderful plantation.

High Tea at Hopsewee on the Friday after Thanksgiving has become a tradition for our family and friends (although sometimes the fellows forsake us for football). High Tea consists of two pots of tea of your choice, a savory course, a scone of your choice, and a dessert course. Afterwards, you can tour the plantation or museum. We then head to historic Georgetown for some exploring and shopping.

The grounds of the home are hauntingly beautiful and transport you to a time long, long ago. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and very welcoming. The tour of the home was very informative and interesting and I want to go back and tour the new museum on the grounds. Do not, repeat, do not miss out on lunch or tea at the River Oak Cottage Tea Room. The food is excellent and the atmosphere is relaxing and casual.

We visited the River Oaks Tea Room. The teas were the perfect accompaniment for the foods. Very filling. Beautiful setting. There was only one server but she stayed on top of everything. Delightful afternoon!

We had a wonderful day touring Hopsewee! The staff was so friendly and welcoming. The views were beautiful and so much to learn about the plantation’s history. highly recommend sending a few hours of the day. And don’t miss the tea room. Food was amazing with superb service. Can’t wait to go again.

After our initial wedding venue in the mountains had to cancel due to flooding, we decided to stay close to home on the coast. 3 hours after our initial phone call with Hopsewee, we were touring the venue and decided to book it. The staff was incredible and friendly, and the owners were hands-on and very communicative. They also helped us pull off a wedding in less than a week!

The view and cool breeze from the new deck and dock on the river after lunch was our groups favorite

We took a couple of our friends for their birthday and then had lunch at the tea room. Everything was lovely. We had a great time.

We love the high teas served on our favorite cruise line. The teas served at Hopsewee in their lovely restaurant and tea room. It also serves as a great mid point meeting place for our family that lives in Charleston. We live in Myrtle Beach. Keep being as classy as you are!

Our guide, Yancey, was a wealth of information, and we could see his passion regarding history! The house is lovely and inside as well as outside, one could imagine life there in 1740. We also enjoyed lunch in their on-site Tea Cottage.

Great experience. Tea & teacakes were awesome. Our server was knowledgeable and attentive. A suggestion might be some instrumental classical music during dining.

The best thing about this visit was the tour guide in the house, she was very knowledgeable and informative. The entry cost $20 was pretty high for what there was to see, an extra $13 if you wanted to see another building.

We really learned a lot from the informative tour guide and thoroughly enjoyed the tea room and gift shop!

Loved the tour and our guide, Elizabeth, was so good. The grounds were beautiful and the house was very well done . Definitely thankful for the bug spray!!!

We toured the Hopsewee Plantation with tour guide Elizabeth. She was dressed appropriately for the Plantation era and carried with her artifacts that demonstrated parts of her information. It was interesting and informative and she was able to answer any questions that came up. We enjoyed the tour and the plantation grounds as well as lunch in the tearoom. It was a very pleasant experience.

Lunch was fabulous. I had the southern tea service. 3 courses of great bits and lovely tea. My three companions had lunch. All raved about their choices. Menu is extensive. Can’t wait to go back.
You can also take tours which I had done on a previous visit.

I have gone to Hopsewee twice for the tea service and I LOVE it! Highly recommend. I tell anyone I know to go and experience it!

Lunch was terrific, staff was warm and friendly and went out of the way to make us feel right at home and comfortable.
Will definitely return!!!!!

My daughter and I had a great visit. We did the plantation house tour and had lunch in the tea room. Food was delicious and the chocolate cake was one of the best cakes I have tasted in a long time. We plan on returning for the Gullah tour and another meal.

This was one of the highlights of our trip to Myrtle Beach. The drive to the plantation area was lined with trees dripping with Spanish Moss. We went to the building that houses the tearoom, gift shop, sitting area and bathrooms first to check in. Their gift shop may be small, but it contains many interesting things. The sitting area contained a model, a grand piano, bookcases, a fireplace, interesting items on display and a locked hidden room. The tea room was light and very pretty and the food we ate was delicious and the Hopsewee tea is very good. We picked up some to bring home. The plantation home sits very near the river, and it was very peaceful there. We shared our tour with one other couple, and it was so interesting. Our tour guide was named Bambi, and she was a Marine. She was one of the most interesting and knowledgeable tour guide I have ever had anywhere. The stuff we learned was intriguing. My husband and I highly recommend both the tour and eating at the tea room. If we get to try this again, we will add in the Gullah Geechee Presentation. They had plenty of bug spray placed around for people to use. There are quite a few stairs involved in the tour part.

Such a wonderful learning experience! Not only the skill of making a basket but ;
listening to the history of the Gullah People. Walking under old oaks and seeing the house facing the waterfront took you back to those times. Will definitely go again.

What a beautiful plantation! I planned this trip online, and the site was very easy to use. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and shared stories about the owners of the planation as well as general history. We then had lunch, and the atmosphere was very southern. We had a wonderful experience.

Our entire visit was enriching and educational, beginning with the excellent Gullah presentation in the “laundry” cabin, then a tour of the Middleton home, which beautifully tied into the family’s deep involvement with Continental Congress and Declaration of Independence. The new museum is brilliant. The “business” of running a huge rice plantation was communicated clearly noting the immense depth of work supported by hundreds of enslaved people, a far more personal (and often emotional) focus using creative yet accurate visuals - more so than other plantations we have visited. In particular, the detail given on growing rice was fascinating. I doubt many rice lovers could recognize “raw” rice growing in a field, much less know the lengthy process to produce those tiny grains we simply drop in boiling water. Lastly, the Tea Room was wonderful, menu is surprisingly extensive and the staff is absolutely delightful. Kudos to the Chef! Hopsewee is now our top destination for friends visiting us in Pawleys Island. Thank you for creating a a valuable and enriching historic experience. Andrea Berkeley Pawleys Island, SC

The tour guide in the house was very informative, and obviously had a passion for the subject. We also ate in the tea room and had some excellent Low Country cooking

We had a group of 8 friends taking the class and the leader Vanessa was fantastic! She had little starters of the weaving and taught us how to weave and taught us some of the history of the area. We are coming back for more classes and to have lunch in the tea room.

Very interesting and historic. Right on the river, and not too developed at all , gives a good sense of the past....albeit a challenging one if you are Black.
REAL IMPORTANT: Please improve your signage off of Route 17 . We went over the bridge and needed to turn around and almost got in an accident and then a little lost.
You need to realize you are out in the woods and not everyone can handle the quick turn off and the dirt road.

The tour states that you can arrive between 10-11 a.m. However, if you are not there at 10:00 you have to wait for the next tour an hour later. The house does not have period pieces due to the owner living in the home. He was moving out at the time of our visit.
The tour guide gives her interpretation of history that in her mind is correct, but reality it is not correct.
I would not encourage others to visit the plantation.

I first fell in love with Hopsewee when we attended their halloween-focused tours in October 2021. We were able to hear about local stories as well as tour the grounds and the lower level of the beautiful house. I have been back 2 additional times since then to enjoy their tearoom! The high tea was delightful. The most recent time I went back, we tried the regular menu for lunch and the low country sampler is a MUST have if you want to try a little bit of everything. Service has always been topnotch, and you can't beat the scenery. Go during sunset and watch it over the North Santee River--you won't regret it! Don't forget to say hi to some of the local kitties hanging around.

We arrived early for a tour of the main house and we’re met by an American Revolutionary War reenactor. He had spent the night in a former slave cottage and was cooking. For the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence Hopsewee has reenactor once a month as a special program. We learned a lot about South Carolina during the Revolution. Great reenactor!
We had a private tour of the beautifully maintained main house with docent Tony. Tony was a wealth of information about the families who lived in the home and the many slaves who worked in the rice paddies.
The teas and light meal were wonderful served in a separate building. The grounds just above the North Santee River are beautiful. Great place to visit and learn about rice growing, slave laborers, and early Americans.

Beautiful historic site. Our docent,Elizabeth was gracious, knowledgeable, pleasant and kind! This was my second trip.

Both the home tour and the lunch well exceeded my expectations. Elizabeth, the tour guide, was superb - very knowledgeable and a great storyteller. She has written a couple of books about Georgetown and was very open to questions.
The low country sampler at the River Oak Cottage was a wonderful selection of pulled pork, pirleau, collard greens, mac and cheese, sweet potato casserole, and a pimento cheese biscuit. Everything was delicious and well presented by Deb, who was welcoming and attentive.
I did not have time for the new museum but have that to look forward to on my next visit. Highly recommended!

Our docent, Yancey McLeod, provided a lovely tour of the Lynch family home at Hopsewee Plantation. The three New Yorkers who accompanied me are great world travelers, and each of them said this was literally the best and most enjoyable tour they have ever experienced!
I was raised in Memphis by Mississippi Delta people, and Yancey is what I think of as the epitome of a southern gentleman: gentle, kind, well-read, and a wonderful sense of humor. We appreciated the historical knowledge he imparted about the house, the Lynch family, and the mortise and tenon and long leaf pine knowledge that only a carpenter could share. But it was his humanity when speaking of the enslaved people at Hopsewee, and what they endured clearing the cypress swamps that especially endeared him to us.
If you visit Hopsewee, be sure to schedule your tour with Yancey--it will be special!

Loved visiting Hopsewee Plantation! Since it is a rice plantation it is different from visiting the huge plantations around the south that planted/harvested cotton. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and happy to answer questions. We enjoyed lunch/tea at the Rose Cottage Tea Room on the grounds and enjoyed it very much! After lunch we went into Georgetown to look around the shops. There you can tour the Rice Museum if you want more info on rice!
Only drawback the day we visited were the number of mosquitos out...it had been raining many days prior to our visit, so that did not help. So be sure to wear clothing that covers your legs & arms if you can. However, insect repellant works well. They have it available for you as your go in to get your tickets if you don't have your own.
Other than the mosquitos, I truly recommend making Hopsewee as a wonderful trip when you are visiting in the Grand Strand area or coming up from Charleston.

My wife and I went for a sweetgrass basket class with Mrs Vera Manigault. It was fantastic! Arrived early and were able to enjoy the tea room. Very friendly staff and excellent service.

The tour was very informative, and the tour guide kept it lively and entertaining. I would definitely recommend the tour. Next time I think we will stay for tea. Go early as the groups are much smaller. In fact, we were the first tour and it was just my wife and myself! We had plenty of time to explore and ask questions at our leisure as we had the tour guide all to ourselves.

Had a wonderful time. Will be going back. Loved the House tour and the service great. Tour guide very knowledgeable. Beautiful landscape.

Had such a great experience today at Hopsewee. The tea service is just wonderful. They set up a great table for us outside and even gave us some facts about the plantation as they were setting it up. The teas and food are also great. Our server went out of her way to make sure that we enjoyed our service. When tea was over she had our teas for taking home ready at the front along with ice tea of our choice for the ride back. Highly recommend a visit.

Loved it, can’t wait to go back. So cool that the family that owns it there and readily accessible to talk with. Beautiful plantation. Food was amazing

This is definitely worth a visit. We enjoyed both the plantation tour and the Gulla tour. We stopped at the tea room for a sandwich, and it was tasty.
Great tour of Hopsewee
We enjoyed the tour of the Hopsewee Plantation house. Yancy was our guide, and he was knowledgeable on many things, and able to answer just about anything. The tour shared about the people that lived there and the aspects of the building itself that made it unique. The grounds were beautiful to walk around with plenty of moss-draped live oaks. Be sure to bring bug spray. We did not get to view the museum or see anything else on the property due to time limits on our end, but it looked inviting and would have been nice to explore it more. All of the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful.
