Beautiful lighthouse. Very well kept. Totally worth the trip up to the top. Amazing views as far as you can see! The trip up is very hot in the summer. With little breeze expect to sweat but totally worth it!

The Hunting Island lighthouse is located within the state park of the same name. Reopened after Hurricane Matthew there is s $2 additional charge to climb to the top. The fee is used to maintain the building. Climb 167 low rise steps with double handrails except for the last four steps. It would be nice to have a handrail added for the senior climbers. At the top you will be 134 feet up but you cannot go into the lantern room but the top platform gives you 360 degree viewsGood explanations located on each landing. Great views up and down the beach and see the pelicans fly past at eye level. Gift shop at the light. Highly recommend. Hope this helps.

We visited the lighthouse and had a great time. In addition to the lighthouse, there are several small buildings on the site with informative displays about what life was like for those who lived at the lighthouse. We were fortunate to visit on one of the days when a guided tour was available. The 167 step climb was broken up by about 7 landings, so that helps make the climb easier. Each landing has information posted for visitors to read about the lighthouse. The view from the top was spectacular, and well worth the climb. You must be 44 inches tall to climb, so our youngest child couldn't go up but they allowed her to go in and look up.

By binderweg |

Well worth the climb for outstanding views of Hunting Island and the ocean. Informative docents on sight to give detailed history and answer questions.

By Donald J |

Great presentation of an historic landmark. A small poster presentation describes the life of a keeper and what it took to construct the lighthouse. Small charge to go to the top and get a birds eye view of the surroundings.

By Michelle H |

The view from the top of the lighthouse is worth every step. The climb is really not bad. There is a landing every 15 steps or so. The folks taking tickets were very nice and gave us extra info about the lighthouse. We also enjoyed the other exhibits on the grounds. There is a small gift shop that we visited.

By Mathieu C |

Close until July 2017. This is not advertised, only when we arrived there did a police office tell us.

By shoelu |

It was cold and windy the day we visited but that did not deter from this wonderful lighthouse and stunning beach! The museum displays in the outbuildings were informative and really gave you a peek back into what life was like for the lighthouse keepers. We were able to climb the beautiful iron staircase to the top and enjoy the incredible views front the outdoor observation deck. The gift shop was ample and the beach has a really unique beauty to it that makes this worth the visit! I highly recommend this attraction!

My wife wanted to go to the beach and so I wanted to check out the old lighthouse. I did not realize that you had to make reservations ahead of time to climb to the top- 167 circular stairs which I did not do. It was probably a blessing as it was hot and humid and I really did not want to climb to the top anyways. They had interesting information about the lighthouse to read. The volunteer was very nice.

By CindyMcN |

The lighthouse was not open to go up in due to reservations and it was rainy the day we went but there was a very friendly volunteer for the lighthouse who was very knowledgeable and we enjoyed hearing about her growing up there and about the lighthouse.

By 2BEis2SKI |

We went late in the day and everything was understandably closed plus I believe reservations are required anyway. They had some nice markings and information but I would have preferred a bit more info for the casual visitor.

Still, the lighthouse and the area are worth a visit.

this island is very cool, the vietnam war scenes from the movie forrest gump were filmed here. the drive into the place is really cool it's like driving into jurassic park. the lighthouse offers some great photo ops. and the beach is pretty except where the trees are still laying blown over from the hurricane that hit the island a few years ago. if you go in the evening like we did the mosquitoes are terrible, so stop at the dollar place on the way and get the $1 bug spray it works and was about the best dollar i ever spent.

The lighthouse is located in Hunting Island State Park. Our favorite place to go when visiting Beaufort. The beaches are clean and not very many people. The "friends of Hunting Island" do a great job keeping the area clean and maintained. They have flowers planted near the lighthouse which add to the ambiance of the area.

By BnMadven |

The concierge at the Rhett House Inn recommended coming out to Hunting Island to check out the lighthouse here, so we took the 30 minute drive out. I was a little dubious about the $5 per person parks admission fee but bit the bullet and paid to get in. Our drive to the lighthouse felt like a drive through Jurassic Park, with the growths of palm trees mixed into the other vegetation. The beach looked to be a nice stretch of sand despite the overcast day. It's from the beach where we could find our way towards the lighthouse. My boyfriend and I got to the lighthouse where there's a $2 fee to climb up to the top and walk out to the circular lookout. Despite my fear of heights, I took the challenge to make the climb inside while my boyfriend stood outside to wait for me. The climb up the lighthouse is via a circular metal staircase, with history about the lighthouse and lighthouse life on each flat landing where you could catch your breath. Interesting facts such as feeling the weight of 50 gallons of lamp oil for the beacon that needed to be carried up the circular staircase, to the many variations of where the lighthouse had been located. The view from the top is pretty great, looking over the canopy of the trees that we drove in from to the expanse of the beach on either side. It was a very nice quick side trip to get to experience.

By Beverly S |

We got to walk to the top of the lighthouse which was a first time experience for all of us. It did not disappoint, my 8 year old even climbed it twice! The view was spectacular and the history behind the lighthouse was fascinating. We truly enjoyed it:)

By Phoinix2 |

Drove out to the lighthouse and beach one day while stopping in Beaufort. Do make the trip out to the Lighthouse..such a beautiful area. We did not do the steps , but if you deide to, call ahead and make reservations, and the number of people is limited at one time. Cute gift shop too!!!

By Wendy H |

Due to hurricane damage in October the park is currently closed (lighthouse, office, camping areas). Nature Centre is open, pier partially open. Beautiful area, still a nice drive if you are in area. Lots of birds in parking area and views from pier. One stop open on way to park but marsh boardwalk also out of commission. Park ranger told us Memorial Day opening is in plans.

By RWE |

A spectacular view of the island from the top of the lighthouse. the beach is beautiful. Well worth a visit while in the lowcountry.

By Robert W |

There’s a 5.00 per adult (cheaper for senior citizens and children) entry fee to the park, and a 2.00 per person climb fee for the lighthouse. The fees are worth it! The views are phenomenal and beautiful. It’s a nice day trip.

By Sandy R |

We enjoyed the view and everything neatly kept. The climate was warm to perfection! Clear skies, delightful walk!

By james c |

ALOT OF Spiral steps....minimum fee charged..beautiful view from top
Over looking ocean.
Sits on beautiful grounds
Nice state park.....Huntington island state park

By RecklessMidnight |

Love the view from the top. Fabulous over the tree tops. The climb was worth the size strategy effort for the opportunity to look out on the ocean.

By wattyates |

I climbed up to the top of this lighthouse with my family. The view was amazing even though it was a little scary. There was a lot of historical information about the lighthouse that was interesting even to the teenagers. Children have to be a certain height to climb the lighthouse. Bring bug spray if you come.

By thegrayhair |

Please take the time and go and see this place, it’s well worth your time. A great place of interest and so much history!

By Dana P |

It costs $2 each to climb the lighthouse, and it is definitely worth it. The park rangers were very nice and friendly and took our photo before we climbed. It's about 170 steps to the top. On the way, they have several displays about the lighthouse. The views from the top are beautiful. A must-do if you're in the area!

By VinoMan |

Nice visit and if you want to climb the steps to the top, call for reservations. Nice volunteers to help with info, etc.

By Robert B |

this was an excellant outing, enjoyed every minute did not know tom hanks viet-nam of movie was filmed here-reminder to take along cash as it does cost alittle to go to top of litehouse-once at top can see for miles PS sure does look alot like NAM

By msm1990 |

$2 cash per person to go up 167 steps and back down, great views well worth the money, especially after going to harbour town hilton head island have the cost was $ per person and not worth it at all

By Nurselet12 |

My family and I visited the lighthouse while at the Hunting Island State Park beaches. It was very affordable at $2 per person. They also allow you to return throughout the day, as long as you have your ticket. The views from the top are breathtaking! Definitely worth all of those steps!

By Jim H |

Walked up the 167 steps to an amazing view of the State park beaches, Fripp Island and Edisto. Excellent views and reminder of life in a different time in our history. The devastation from Hurricane Irma and Matthew are everywhere along the hiking trails and especially the beach areas and are a potent reminder of the powerful forces nature can thrust upon us.
Great way to spend a day hiking or longer periods camping.

By speak54 |

I parked near the lighthouse and roamed the beach for a few hours collecting shells. Restrooms are located near the parking for the lighthouse. $5 to get into the park.

By QueenBee0301 |

The state park suffered a lot of damage from Hurricane Matthew and was delayed opening due to cleanup. We were old the camping area was damaged heavily, but the public picnic area and beach at the lighthouse were accessible. The lighthouse stands in an area that houses the ruins of the lighthouse family home. The outbuildings share the story of the history of the light house and those who lived there. Worth a visit.

By JbirdinSC |

Our family visited the lighthouse during Spring Break week and it was not overly crowded. Likely because you can complete the lighthouse climb and grounds within one hour of arrival if you're worried about time. It is about 167 steps to the top level where you can go out and view the incredible scenic visuals. You can also access and walk the beach just steps away from the lighthouse. There is a small gift shop and restrooms on premise.

By Cathy G |

I had come across this gem while researching in Trip Advisor and it was such a highlight to our trip! You do have to make a reservation as they can only allow so many up at once. The reservation is simple - just call or email the person. There are many different landings along the 168 step journey to the top that explain the history and construction of the lighthouse. And it gives you time to catch a breath! The fortunate thing was we had our reservation printed out and when we arrived at the entrance to the park it was Full and they were re-directing cars to other areas, but since we showed them the reservation we were able to go in. The beach here was beautiful and the view from the top catwalk was spectacular. The parking area is divided into different lots so you may think it is full until you follow the signs to the other lots. Gift shop and rest rooms also included.

By Paul_P |

My wife and I visited recently on a cold rainy day, and had the place to ourselves. Access to the lighthouse was very inexpensive ($2 per person I think). The constructors were smart enough to build the lighthouse in such a way that it could be disassembled and moved, which it eventually was. It's the only lighthouse in our state that allows the general public inside. The stairs have large platforms interrupting the climb quite often, so if you need to rest on the way up, there are plenty of opportunities. The history was fascinating, and there are various outbuildings with more information on display.

By beachlovernc2015 |

We stopped here to see the lighthouse, have a picnic lunch and walk the beach. It was a beautiful day for late October so the beach was actually a bit crowded and finding a parking spot took a bit of time but there are plenty. There are picnic tables, bathroom facilities, a shop and of course, the lighthouse. Due to Covid they are only taking reservations to walk up to the top and we did not bother with that but instead, enjoyed a lovely walk on the beach. Will return when we have more time to spend.

By Griffis08 |

Quiet beach and short drive from Beaufort. We got there early. It did get a little more crowded as the day went on but it was summer and it's a beach so...
The lighthouse was nice.

By Traveling One |

Its $5/person to get into the park and $2/person to go up the lighthouse. Only 6 people are allowed to go up at a time so the wait can be pretty long. We enjoyed learning about lighthouses and of course the view at the top! I recommend doing this if you're in Beaufort.

For those with kids, you must be at least 44 inches tall to go to the top.

By jyelm |

Enjoyed climbing up the 167 step to the top of the lighthouse. The exhibits were interesting. It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed walking on the beach by it too.

By davliwoods4 |

We actually did not go in lighthouse but walked by to the beach. Visiting family. They asked if we sished to go in lighthouse but we had little one traveling with us. Beach was nice, unique. warm shallow water. good for pics

By 🌎The Pookies World Travelers 🌎 |

We came when there was a cold snap so the weather was not great. Cold, rainy, windy and overcast. We walked up the beach to the lighthouse and paid the fair price of $2 each to climb the 167 steps to the top. Super nice ranger greeted us and took our photos. The lighthouse had information on each level so you could pause and learn. It was a nice diversion and one I would recommend.

By livelife h |

Love this lighthouse, the staff are friendly the views are beautiful. You can see the beach and so much more. You must make a reservation to go up.

By Nancy B |

Wanted to take a run up to see the Lighthouse, however, we had to pay to get into the State Park. Even though it was a bit of a drive to get there we felt the cost diminished out enthusiasm. the drive was lovely, however.

By VespagirL55 |

Plan to spend half a day or more, if you want to take advantage of everything that Hunting Island state park has to offer. We started at the visitor's center, then rode our mountain bikes on the park's interior trails. Coming from the mountains of northern California, we didn't expect a challenging ride, but the rolling terrain combined with the heat and humidity made for a great workout. The nature center is a must-do, particularly if you have kids or are into critters. We then rode to the lighthouse, and very much enjoyed the history and the views. The displays were not extensive, but were interesting and well presented. Finally, we hit the beach, for more riding on the firm sand. We weren't prepared to swim, but we could have capped off the visit with a dip in the Atlantic. Note that it was $5 per head to get into the park, and an additional $2 each to access the lighthouse; money well spent in our opinion.

By Dave O |

During your visit to Hunting Island State Park be sure to take a trip up the steps to the top of the Hunting Island Lighthouse and enjoy the view. It's worth every step !

By rogersober |

The lighthouse is in great shape and it’s Village is partially kept in tack. The step tour seemed s Little to stressful for a hot day.

By Tricia D |

Didn't know they booked up the entire day ahead. We showed up pretty early, and they didn't know if they could squeeze us in any time that day. Plus it was reserved fully. The grounds were pretty and the little houses around pretty interesting however.

By MeganRatcliff97 |

You can't visit the hunting state park without a visit to the lighthouse. Although I am afraid of heights I always brave it.. the views are well worth it! Lowcountry at its finest, certainly not to be overlooked.

By Bo_99 |

Camped just down the beach and walked here. Beautiful lighthouse and picturesque setting. They had a nice selection of worthy gifts and quality sun wear in the gift shop.

By William W |

We enjoyed the park and the Light House very much. We had a pretty easy climb- nice solid, wide steps and a landing every 20 steps or so so you could stop, look at the display they had at each one and then go up the next flight. The view from the top was remarkable! It was a beautiful, clear day and we could see for miles! We highly recommend going to the top!

By CeylonKaren |

This is a very nice are and is a nice ride for a little trip in the Low Country, saying that however like the rest of the east coast of the Low Country it has a lot of tree damage so the all entrances to the light house and the camping area is closed. The nature center further down the road is open. & also has rest rooms The pier at the nature center was damage too & is closed about 1/2 way out for safety reasons. I am sure this spring they will get the area cleaned up. Looking forward to returning again. Beaufort is a short drive and is worth stopping to walk around and enjoy the downtown shopping, harbor, & restaurants. Enjoy the beautiful Low County of SC

By NarrowMender |

Stellar experience! The area had a lot to offer honestly. The ocean and historic sites all wrapped up in one adventure. Hanging out at the lighthouse and then seeing it from the beach was cool. Interesting fact the lighthouse was designed to be moved and has already been moved once due to erosion.

By mattandcolleen2015 |

My husband and I drove from the historic area of Beaufort to make a quick trip to view the Lighthouse before a scheduled tour for the sole purpose of killing time. We were so pleasantly surprised and thankful we made the effort. The 167 stairs climb to the top provides for a wonderful panoramic view of the ocean coast line and beach below. There were Information plaques on each level of the spiral staircase. Worth the trip!

By Linda C |

An easier climb than most lighthouses. Take in the view and savor the surroundings. It's a must do in the Charleston area.

By MaryAnnBG86 |

My nieces and sons went up the lighthouse and us adults watched them from below. We all walked together in the historic area. It was neat. Afterwards, we went to the beach and collected shark teeth. Fun few hours of history.

By NancyTColorado |

Worth the climb, also really interesting history of the people who operated the light house and their families who lived here. Nice to walk on the beach after the climb.

By Brittany R |

Great view from the top and we LOVED the reservations. Our group of six were able to enjoy the lighthouse to ourselves for a full hour which was much more enjoyable. I hope this reservation system stays!

By Eimeargency |

It was wonderful to be able to climb the lighthouse and find information on each level about the history of the lifehouse and those who once lived there. The outhouses and information of what was once there really created a visual image of what it was like when the lighthouse was a working part of Hunting Island.

By raulcQ557SU |

Great views $2 entry fee with having to be at least 44” tall to gain entry.
Tickets can be purchased at the gift store or at the lighthouse if you have cash.

By Melissa C |

Great view from the top. There are landings between the staircases to stop and rest of you need to. There is a $2 per person fee to enter the lighthouse, but it's well worth it. We took a walk on the beach afterwards. Bring a picnic lunch and your bathing suits! Plan to spend the day there.

By Jill B |

It's tiring to climb to the top of this lighthouse! No elevator. However, the interior staircase is graceful. Go in cool weather.

By NOregrets-Traveler |

At the end of the road in Hunting Island park. You can climb to the top and the lighthouse is in good shape.

By Laura S |

Located on Hunting Island, SC you can climb to the top and see forever! Has some old out buildings with historic references to read on the ground where the old keeper's housing was.

By MelanieR18 |

The grounds area is beautiful. There is a small charge for climbing the lighthouse. What this grandma enjoyed were the platforms in between stairs to take a short rest. The wind was gusting too much for us to exit the top to enjoy the view. I snapped a few photos from the windows.

By Steve t |

Lots of downed trees in the area...was told the park would be closed until end of year! Do stop at Beaufort visitors center for updated information on hurricane damage...most everything else in area is open.

You can drive by the park

By brian k |

This charmiong beach is one of our favorite anywhere. The trees come down to the ocean, you can walk through the tropical forest paths, and ther is a lagoon for fishing or kayaking.

By Tigerfan85 |

Just $2 plus admission to Hunting Island State Park. Like others have mentioned, it's an easy climb if you are at all fit. If not, you can stop and catch your breath on each broad landing while "reading" the informational sign and pretending that you are not out of breath. Haha. The view from the top is great.

By terhadley |

I love lighthouses and this one did not disappoint. Cheap to walk to the top. Great views. Grounds interesting too.

By Patti J |

We'd heard this is the lighthouse to see whe visiting the Hilton Head area. It's a bit of a drive to get there from our resort but it was well worth it for a number of reasons: we found a potential future camp site with an awesome beach, a trail system links sites across the island, the trip there includes at least 2 very nice and well-priced (not exorbitant, good values) seafood stops with their own shrimp boats (fresh shrimp!). There's also a nature center and a boat launch.
As for the lighthouse... well, i love climbing their stairs and the views from the top and this one had a nice display of information throughout. They have a minimum height for those climbing the stairs (44 inches, i think), allowing for extra safety, I'd guess. And the grounds have a few artifacts to see too.
Very nice!

By Debhud |

It's an easy climb to the top of the lighthouse. Large landings in between the flights of stairs. The view from the top of lighthouse is beautiful. Admission is $2.00.

By Kathy S |

Well preserved lighthouse and grounds I did not go up the lighthouse but I believe it was a fee to climb to the top. I thought it was a little expensive but I understand that they have to preserve the lighthouse.

The lighthouse sits back off of the beach probably 75 yards in the beach area have been hit by some hurricanes in the last couple years so they were still cleaning up from that last hurricane Irma I believe.

The white house itself is very pretty and in good shape with surrounding buildings and cabins for rent even

By Tim S |

We stopped in to go see the lighthouse and the beach. Both were very nice, we also found sharks teeth on the beach. There were good amenities at the beach also. The lighthouse was $2.00 to go into and not a bad climb. There are a lot of landings so it's not a straight climb to the top. The view was great and worth the treck. We wished we went here first and not wasted the time to go to Hilton Head, that sucked but this was a great trip.

By 907blaked |

We drove out to this lighthouse from downtown Beaufort - it took about 30 minutes. It cost $14 for 4 of us to get in the park (1 adult, 3 kids), and then $8 more for all 4 of us to walk to the top of the lighthouse ($2 each). We went on a cold day in December, and so we were pretty much the only ones. The climb to the top was a little scary for those afraid of heights, but the stairs were solidly built. The views at the top were great! And it was fun to climb to the top of a lighthouse. Be warned that those under 44" can't climb to the top; fortunately, my 5-year old was just barely tall enough. The ticket-taker said there are many a disappointed child not tall enough to climb. After climbing, we walked out to the beach, which was very cold and windy when we were there, but which I bet is fun on a hot summer day. I didn't see anything else to do in the Park other than see/climb the Lighthouse. Oh, and we learned about the lighthouse while we were there. For one thing, at every stop along the way to the top of the lighthouse, signs gave us information about the lighthouse. In addition, outside the lighthouse were the remnants of the lighthouse keepers village, with interesting signage.

By Pattersonmanor |

We drove down to see the lighthouse.

It cost $ 5 per person to get into the state park and then $2 per person to go up the lighthouse.

It’s a bit pricey if all you do is go up the lighthouse.

It was easier than it looks from the outside

Every 19 steps is a landing that allows you to stop and catch your breath. It also allows for people to more easily pass each other.

It’s a nice view from the top.

By Trevor42008 |

We stay on Harbor Island which is next to Hunting Island; and when the tide is really out you can walk from Harbor to Hunting Island. Great area to watch brown pelican.

By Marion W |

There was a waiting list but it was worth it. You aren't rushed which is nice. Definitely visit the little shed before going up and read some of the history of the lighthouse. Worth the climb.

By Mary Beth C |

On a day adventure, we decided to head to Huntington State Park. We noticed there was a lighthouse. We parked our vehicle, got out and walked to the lighthouse and were met by a very friendly and knowledgeable park guide. We were able to walk up the spiral stair case to the top (110 feet). We were able go around the catwalk and look out on the ocean and shoreline. It was a spectacular view!!! Don’t miss out on this historical and interesting landmark.

By A M |

If you are going to the lighthouse it is a nice half day trip. Reservations have to be made to climb to the top. The beach is beautiful with sea turtle nests marked and protected and we went on a 2 mile hike to the lagoon. The trail was well marked and groomed BUT the weather was oppressively humid. Maybe not the best place to visit in the summer unless you want to go solely to the beach.

By Deborah H |

This is the only lighthouse in the state of SC that you can still climb. The views from the top are wonderful! The grounds feature the footprints of the light keepers quarters and smaller outbuildings. The outbuildings contain a history of this and other US lighthouses and gives you a glimpse into the past. This historical site has been well maintained in keeping with the period in which it was built. For safety reasons babies, toddlers and children under 44 inches may not be taken to the top of the lighthouse. There are very nice facilities on site including bathrooms, showers, snack and gift shop, hiking trails, picnic shelters and grills ocean front and a very nice beach. Nice day trip for the entire family

By acphifer |

This lighthouse is located on the north beach of the park. It is stunning! The staff were so friendly and helpful...even offering to take our photo before beginning our climb. The lighthouse is well-maintained inside and out. At the top, the view is incredible.

By Shelliu |

Beautiful beachfront lighthouse. Get there early to make a reservation as entry is limited. The traffic to get there on the weekend after 10am is also horrible. The lighthouse has a height restriction to climb the steps so it’s not a good activity for small children. There is a little history walking tour though if you don’t want to go up in the lighthouse.

By Fay B |

You have got to do the clam it is an awesome view from the top. You can see Hilton Head Island and Edisto Island.

By Pennie Z |

The View is worth the $2 and all the stairs. Take your time going up and read the plaques! Friendly staff.. Very educational

By StephanieHeth |

Such a beautiful and well kept secret! The beach is beautiful and the Lighthouse is a gem!! It was a great weekend and a great place to get away from the Corona Virus for a bit!! Can’t wait to go back!

By Joe7954 |

Hunting island has a very nice beach area along with the ability to tour the lighthouse. There is a small fee for the lighthouse but well worth it.

By GLS05 |

This is a great place to visit. The climb up is 167 steps but there are several landings on which to rest. Lots of information posted and the view from the top is beautiful. The hostess was very friendly as well!

By Kristin S |

Staff were really friendly. It is definitely worth a stop, especially for lighthouse enthusiasts. Great view from the top!

By PTB46 |

OK, it's hot work climbing those stairs but the effort is repaid with stunning views of the island from the top. There's a little shop nearby with really good cooling fans and chilled drinks, so you'll recover quickly!

By moonflowerperfume |

The lighthouse survived Hurricane Irma but the park is closed for the rest of the year. The Visitors' Center is open.

By FLskibear |

During our weekend getaway to Beaufort we took a side trip to Hunting Island. The lighthouse was open for a small charge. Due to certain restrictions the number of guests were limited and reservations were given. The stairway inside the lighthouse is much larger than other lighthouses we have climbed. There are also very large landings for a chance to catch your breath on the climb up if needed! A must do if going to Hunting Island. The views at the top are amazing!

By Bobbie U |

Loved this beach. Free parking and clean showers and very clean restrooms. Nice place to take photos, walk along the beach and swim. Beautiful weathered trees.
An added bonus was the lighthouse and gift shop.

By karen c |

Be sure to climb to the top, the views are truly amazing. The climb was easy with nice big platforms between each floor with an informational plaque providing insight into the history of the lighthouse and the area.

By Dan K |

a sight that should be on everyones to do list when you visit hunting island state park.well worth the expense and energy needed to get to one of the best views in the county.

By beachbumchick777 |

This is a lighthouse you can climb, tour and enjoy the view from the top! You can learn the history of the lighthouse while visiting the park.

By Bob S |

Located at Hunting Island State Park, the lighthouse is worth the trip to this well kept park. There are many steps to climb to the top of the lighthouse, but the view is worth it. Take the elementary aged children if they are up to the challenge.
I appreciate the hard work of the State Park employees to keep this treasure of beach and lighthouse available to visitors.

By Pinkie13 |

This place holds such memories for me as a child, and it’s still just as fascinating and lovely. It costs $2 to climb to the top, but it’s well worth it. The park attendants are such nice people who offered to take photos for me and told us all about the history of the lighthouse and island. This is a must-do if you can! Be sure to walk out on the beach and visit the tree graveyard as well...it’s eerily beautiful.

By 2016andiamo |

Great natural shoreline and fantastic place to find sand dollars. Summers are very hot! We go there during the winter and fall.

By amy1003 |

We were out exploring and pulled into Huntington Beach when we saw the Lighthouse sign. The actual Lighthouse was closed but the views and park were fabulous. Definite stop if your in the area.

By Travlgal |

If you want to see a lighthouse this is a beautiful area. They charge a couple dollars to let you walk up in the lighthouse and are really sticklers about it.

By LSNS2652 |

We drove from Savannah to Beaufort, had a nice visit there. We decided to extend our drive a bit and go to Hunting Island.
We’re glad we did.
The state park is beautiful, there’s a wonderful beach and the Lighthouse is worth the extra 2 bucks.
We climbed to the top, loved the view, thoroughly enjoyed reading the history.
We tried to imagine what it was like for a lightkeeper to live such an isolated life.
Hunter Island Lighthouse is worth the visit!

By Angela H |

Nice little lighthouse. Just under 300 stair climb with a stiff breeze and good view on top. Wide landings between floors to catch your breath while reading up on the lighthouse history. If you have already paid the $5 admission to get into the park, you'll want to at least tour the grounds for free. And if you don't mind the stairs, it's well worth a climb to the top.

By cwh25 |

A short wait to climb to the top, but then (I am told since I didn't do it myself) a spectacular view of the water and surrounding area. Lots of shells to be found on the beach, and great places to stroll.

By LMJ29 |

This is a beautifully kept state park and beach area. The view from the top of the lighthouse is amazing! The beach is pristine, plenty of parking, bathrooms, and picnic areas. Don't forget to walk and see the trees that have been eroded by the sea.

By cmehend |

This is a beautiful lighthouse and in a great park setting. It's nice to see that it's actually open so you can walk to the top.

Loved this place. Very pretty and we enjoyed a picnic while soaking up the view. Of course, perfect for Instagram photos!:)

My husband and I visited this lighthouse on February 9, 2022. It was an interesting visit. We first had difficulty finding the location, finally found it, paid the $16 admission for the 2 of us at the entry gate --- I asked questions about the lighthouse and climbing it --- was told will have to inquire at the lighthouse - but that the north beach entrance was closed and we would have to park at the south beach entrance to walk up to the lighthouse --- we then arrived at the Visitor's Center to only see a note on the door opens at 11am -- we were there at 10:36am. So off we go to find a parking spot --- the first one we came to was in a small lot with an entrance onto the beach --- while my GPS indicated the lighthouse was 6/10ths of a mile away - that was in a straight line! my best estimate is we walked around 8/10ths all on the beach.

We arrive at the lighthouse and snap off a few photos with it in the background. I had seen a couple of people walking around on top of the lighthouse while we were walking towards it on the beach. Once we arrived at the entrance of the lighthouse - we were greeted by a lady who quickly apologized and told us the lighthouse was CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE! It seems the people I saw walking around were inspectors and they closed the lighthouse for repairs. We were told had we arrived prior to them we could have gone up. WELL the lighthouse doesn't open up until 10am --- we arrived at 10:36 then had the beach walk

Yes I was disappointed in not getting to climb the lighthouse - but --- it was still a beautiful lighthouse and there was historical information in the adjacent buildings.

We also found some wonderful shells along the beach on our walk - so it's still worth a visit.

JUST CALL BEFORE YOU GO SO YOU WILL KNOW THE HOURS AND INFO!!

Beautiful drive and well worth it to see this very stunning lighthouse. The area was well maintained and very clean.

By caroline t |

This is our second trip to Lighthouse, and we loved it. The view is wonderful! We love the educational pieces that are posted along each floor.

By sheldah |

Just the drive into this area was like nothing I have ever seen before. Although there is a cost to go into the park, the light house is free. The beach was also wonderful and had life guards that were friendly. Such a neat place

By Excursion175464 |

It was a beautiful beach...not at all crowded. The lighthouse was closed, but still a beautiful sight! The ride in from the highway was amazing too..very junglesque and "Jurassic parky"....

By Jerry B |

We made a short road trip from our hotel in Hilton Head to see a historic lighthouse. First you you have to pay to get into the state park. $20.00 for a car of 2 senior citizens and 2 children over the minimum age. The senior citizen rate only applies to in state seniors and not visiting seniors. There is no student rate offered. Then another $2 per person for the privilege to climb up to the top of the lighthouse. It is a great view from the top. Quite a few steps to get to the top. It does have history and it is interesting but I've seen may lighthouse around the great lakes and this one was nothing special.
If you plan on going to see the lighthouse I suggest that you make a day at the beach out of it. The beaches are very nice, the view is great without any buildings to obstruct the view and there does not seem to be many people. They do have lifeguards on duty.

By Ben31Trips |

This lighthouse is in excellent shape. If you climb it, there are plenty of landings to take a break. There are outstanding views at the top!

By Melinda & Robert Champion |

The volunteer working the lighthouse, Tammy Brown, was just as spectacular as the lighthouse.

Cost is $5.00 per adult to get into the park. South Carolina seniors get in for $3.50. Don't remember cost for children. To go up the lighthouse $2.00 per person. Height minimum is 42 inches.

Can not bring food or drinks into lighthouse. But that's OK. BRING BUG SPRAY.

Each flight has a landing to rest, wonderful informative plaques tell the history of the lighthouse. 167 steps to the top. Admission is from 10:00 am - 4:45 pm daily March - October, and until 3:45 pm November - February.

Picnic benches and covered picnic area at bottom of lighthouse. Wonderful beach access. Gift shop has concessions.

By mike h |

We had a great time at Hunting Island State Park. The state park itself is beautiful and the lighthouse was amazing. The grounds are nicely kept and there is a nice gift shop that’s available that sells local items and vacation things.

Unfortunately, the lighthouse itself is closed on the inside, while the steps are apparently being refurbished for safety reasons. The volunteers there indicated they were also working on a observation deck to improve things for future visitors. We were told that it would open in 2025, but there was not a specific date given .

By John A |

This lighthouse is one of the few that allows you to climb to the top. There is a small fee. The result is a view that is supurb.

By Lanette H |

Beautiful! The lighthouse was amazing. The view at the top is so nice. It is so worth the climb. The beach was great not crowded and just perfect.

By thereichtrack |

Our muscles are still sore, even though we routinely walk six miles a week and bike 12 miles a week! Beautifully wild scenery!

By W.Hall |

The views were breathtaking! Steps are very sturdy. So much amazing history, plenty of parking. The man selling the tickets was so helpful and friendly!

By pawibby |

This beach is like no other. Very rustic and the Lighthouse is a real plus. Hunting Island has taken a real beating with the storms but it keeps coming back thanks to many volunteers. The campground is right on the waterfront. Awesome!

By shawfam |

This was one of the most enjoyable stops we've made. The Lighthouse lies within Hunting Island State Park but $5 per person Park Entry Fee was well worth it!
Be sure to stop at the Visitor's Center after entering the park as some roads remain closed due to continuing clean up from Hurricane Matthew. Regardless, the park is beautiful with several beach access points and picnic areas.

We enjoyed a long walk on the beach before visiting the Lighthouse site which was fantastic. The original foundation of the Light Keeper's home is visible and several 'out buildings' house informative displays. The Hunting Island Lighthouse itself is open and visitors can climb all the way to the observation deck for a mere $2 donation. Volunteers at the Lighthouse are friendly and informative.

By Judy A |

We enjoyed walking the beach! The lighthouse climb was fairly easy (we are both in our late 60's). Beautiful view from the top.

By quilter0810 |

We absolutely loved this one. I climbed to the top. Good view. The guys manning the door wer really friendly

By Bill L |

The lighthouse is in a great park with several paths to the beach. The lighthouse is in great condition and you can walk to the top for a very small fee. The attendants are very friendly and knowledgeable and help make the visit more enjoyable. Terrific views from the top of the lighthouse and a great history of this movable tower. Had a great time and learned a little more about SC lighthouse history.

By cohoman |

My family took a slight detour when driving from Beaufort to Savannah to visit this lighthouse. We try to visit lighthouses when we can, and this one is open to the public (the only one in South Carolina). You have to enter the Hunting Island Park first ($5 per person) then drive over to the lighthouse and pay the docet there another $2 to climb up the lighthouse. When we arrived, we had to wait 30 mins because the docet was only letting 6 people at a time enter and climb the lighthouse. Although it was 9 floors up, it was an easy climb since it has landings at each level. If you're afraid of heights, you won't like the observation platform surrounding the top of the lighthouse. Really nice view from the top.

Note, there are restrooms across from the lighthouse, but watch out for mosquitos!

By hsbvim |

The Hunting Island Lighthouse certainly makes a bold statement against the blue sky! We were struck by its majesty as soon as we started walking toward it from the parking lot.

They are limiting climbing guests to six at a time during COVID, so we did not at all feel uncomfortable climbing the stairs without face masks. You get great 360 degree views of the beach and the surrounding area from atop.

We found the placards in the lighthouse as well as the accompanying buildings to be very educational. We were very glad we visited and think you will be too!

By Mythili R |

Beautiful climb of 168 steps. The view was to die for. A must see attraction in Beaufort. A lot of history to be learnt.

By Diane S |

Don’t miss this one! This state park is gorgeous and the drive through it was beautiful only to reach the lighthouse and the beach. RV camping available

By Kristi S |

We visited here while on vacation at Fripp Island. The lighthouse is an easy walk up. There is a total of 167 steps, but there is a landing about every 20 steps if you do need to rest. My 6 and 7 year old did it with no problems. If you have smaller kids you do have to be 44" to climb. View from the top was great because it was a very clear day. Before climbing we checked out the beach, the kids loved climbing over all the fallen trees and checking them out.

By Miriam A |

This is must see when visiting Beaufort S.C. It is also great for the kids to see and experience the meaning and history of this great lighthouse/

By Halfunit |

This is one of the few lighthouses in South Carolina that you can actually climb to the top. Your $2 admission gives you access to the lighthouse, as well as the artifacts that are displayed in the light keepers' quarters. There is also a nice gift shop. It's worth your time if you love lighthouses!

By Vermont68 |

A great treat to climb the stairs to the top and learn a bit of history on the way. Very pleasant staff.

By Julie W |

The view at the top was beautiful. I have climbed quite a few lighthouses and this one was a pretty easy climb probably because of the many landings. The price was right - $2 after a $5 entry fee to the state park. There is a small gift shop where I had to buy a lighthouse magnet. It was a hot day but there was a nice breeze at the top.

By Heather H |

Cant visit hunting island state park without a trip to visit the lighthouse. Really enjoyed the view from the top!!

By Richard S |

This lighthouse has been closed to the public since hurricane Matthew. It has been reopened recently and visitors can again walk to the top. It will be even better when they get the park cleaned up so visitors can enjoy the entire park.

By Zeke T |

The park has reopened. While you can still see the damage to the surrounding trees & fauna, the lighthouse still stands. Clean & bright, standing where you can get fantastic views. The beach areas, ocean & surrounding areas are recovering. The lighthouse grounds are in great shape so you can visit & climb to the top.

By Randy S |

A visit to the Hunting Island State Park lighthouse is more than just a climb up a tower to see what’s out there. The site provides a wonderful look back in history to how the families that lived there survived such a lonely life. There is an architectural aspect of the visit to learn how the lighthouse was designed in pieces enabling it to be moved over the years. And of course there is the beauty of this remote beach - well worth your time to check this place out.

By Mwatt784 |

It is $5 a person to get into the grounds but it is soooooo worth it! The light house is opened to all and the beach is wonderful. There wasn't any over crowding, it was clean, and we are already planning our trip back.

By Tonya G |

My husband and I climbed the lighthouse and the views were beautiful from up top! It is a must see whether you climb or not. The surrounding beach is beautiful.

By TeresaH05 |

We stopped by the HI lighthouse while we were staying at the campground. Such a nice area! Very well kept. We had our dog with us, so we stayed outside of the fenced area. Very worthwhile stop

By Kellye J |

This was the third lighthouse we saw on our trip. it is located in a lovely state park with a nice beach next to it. When we got to the top, we enjoyed the view and also saw a large number of dolphins swimming close to the breaker for the beach. The little building next to the lighthouse has a great display of historical info as well.

By Joyce S |

Climbed to the top to see a spectacular view. I would recommend going here for a climb to the top. 360 beautiful views.

By truman111 |

This was a hidden gem for our family. Clean, silky sand with shells to find. Very few beach combers around and the forest met the ocean. The light house was closed for repairs but still such a beautiful sight to see. We learned that there were many movies/shows that have been filmed here so that was interesting. Loved it here!

By Barbara J |

The history of this old light house is fascinating and worth the short drive from Beaufort. It has been well maintained and gives a beautiful view from the top. The 167 steps are not too bad. (Over 70 and no problems at all)

By rolsto314 |

Amazing views from 132 foot lighthouse that requires 167 steps to reach the landing. See ocean, marsh, coastline, bridge, roads, birds, beach, people watch. Only lighthouse in South Carolina open to the public. $2 fee per person. Original build in 1859, destroyed in civil war, rebuilt in 1879, moved 1 1/4 mile inland due to erosion, active until 1933. Several auxiliary buildings exist. Recommend camera, binoculars, no slick shoes. Hours 10 am till 4:45pm. Great phot ops and bonding event. Closest to beach of any lighthouse that I have visited. Must pay park admission $5 each so bring a picnic and bathing suit and make it a day. Park accepts sc palmetto pass ( green only). Small gift shop with cold drinks and bathrooms.

By Tami N |

The lighthouse is $2 per person to go inside. Many steps and not for the out if shape or for the persons afraid of heights. My friends who went up said the view of the beach were really beautiful.

By tkl99 |

We climbed the lighthouse during our recent visit to Beaufort / Hunting Island. They are limiting the # of people in the lighthouse to 6 at a time so definitely call early to book a time. It is worth the view.

By VAtraveller_11 |

There is a fee for non-South Carolina residents but pay it!! The beach is great and the gounds are pure South
Carolina islands. Get there early to snag a good parking spot (less problem on weekdays)

By Phil H |

Matthew, and now Irma did not bring her down. The view from the top will still be of a beautiful and natural undeveloped island. Watch for the park's opening in 2018.☀😎🌴🏖🏊

By Claudia P |

If you like lighthouses and beautiful views this is definitely worth visiting and climbing to the top.

By TimeToTravel2468 |

It was a pleasant late September day and the sky was blue. We made it up the 175 steps and enjoyed the panoramic view and the cool breeze. Visibility was great and the view amazing!! The lighthouse volunteer was friendly and helpful!! A beautiful lighthouse!!

By LaRee H |

Very happy to climb this lighthouse to the top because the views are amazing! One direction was the beautiful beach and water then oppisite way had beach with giant driftwood trees on and in the sand. There were landings every so many steps up the tower so fairly easy to get to top, only 6 people allowed up at one time so we had lots of room and time to look around, liked going in the other buildings too, great area and appreciate that the locals have preserved the history of this area and keep the lighthouse open for tours, was only a few dollars fee and more than worth it, love it. Thank you!

By Kelley G |

Being from New England, I have visited many lighthouses, but this one might be my favorite. There were over 700 steps to climb, and I am no youngster! But there is a large landing at every level and the stairs are wide, so it was a fairly easy climb. Each level had some i formation about the lighthouse, and the view from the top was spectacular. Best of all...it only cost $2.00.

By Ruthie454 |

The lighthouse is definitely a must see place when you visit. Climb to the top if possible, the view is amazing!

By WorldSoloTraveler |

Part of the Hunting Island State Park, pack your picnic and suntan lotion, beach fun for the family and a place memories are made.

By j0anne24 |

Beautiful state park and beach - lots of flooding on the roads but rangers were out in force. Easy parking and showers upon beach exit.

By David E |

Hunting Island and is South Carolinas most visited State Park. Parking is very close to the beach. The lighthouse is at the north end of the island with again, easy parking. If you are VERY healthy you can climb to the top for a great view out over the Atlantic.

By rhgbBirmingham_Al |

A quick day trip to Hunting Island was well worth it!! Still recovering from the Oct. 2016 hurricane so some areas were not open but the lighthouse and beach were. The volunteers at the lighthouse were awesome and very informative. The gift shop close to the lighthouse offered a free beach wheelchair for our family member that was in need of assistance. It was awesome!! He felt like king for a day perched in this chair complete with his own umbrella!! We also saw a small alligator crossing the road before entering the park! Such a great day - wish we could have stayed longer!!

By travellover021 |

Took my 84 year old mother to the top of this. Each landing has an educational display regarding the history of it. Not especially taxing physically. Incredible views from the top.

By ELFDUDE |

You never can go wrong in visiting an old Lighthouse! And for only $2 you can climb the 130 steps! Go off season and make sure to arrive between 9 and 430pm

By C809SQedwardr |

Make sure to keep driving through the park till you reach the parking area for the lighthouse. If you don't, and try to see the lighthouse from just anywhere on the beach, you could miss it entirely as its set far back from the water and nearly hidden by the trees. But still a must see for lighthouse fans.

By HapyGuy7 |

This is a historic lighthouse that is in great condition. If you haven’t been to one, this is a good start. Hunting Island is one of the best Natural Parks on the East Coast

By Alice Ann B |

My husband and I enjoyed a stroll along the beach looking for sharks teeth then spent an hour touring the lighthouse and its grounds. We climbed to the top and were rewarded with a beautiful view.

By SafariYoga |

The nominal fee to enter the park and the $2 charge to climb the lighthouse are well worth it for the beauty of the view from the top. The displays inside and out about the history of the spot are well-done and kept simple. The volunteer working at the lighthouse on the day of our visit was delightful! She cheerfully took photos for us and her pleasant demeanor really enhanced our visit.

By Goodtimesrus105 |

This is worth the trip to the state park. It's a few hours worth of entertainment to also visit the undisturbed beach and the nature center and pier which is at the second entrance just past the entrance to the state park and lighthouse. Be prepared with cash to climb to the top. There is one fee to enter the park itself, but then you'll need to pay a small fee to actually climb the lighthouse. Really beautiful views from the top. 137 steps isn't so bad because you can stop at each level to read the historical markers provided and then continue in to the top. One of the few lighthouses you can still go inside, so go while you're there!

By Chelly55 |

We paid to get into Hunting Island Park. The lighthouse was nice to see. It was difficult to get a good picture because of the vegetation of the park.

By RobOlson |

A delightful lighthouse, enjoyable setting with many picnic table for families. The top of the light house is accessible for a $2 fee. The view from the top is spectacular. Wonderful historic location. Stop and see it.

By bmbaird62 |

This is a must in the Beaufort area, especially with kids old enough to climb the steps as they always love the view from the top. The park is natural with many downed trees and only the roads and paths are kept clear. A great learning experience for all.

By Jennifer P |

My husband and I didn't go up this one, but our kids did. They said it was cool but scary. Might try it next time around.

By Hrab2020 |

Being 51 years old and never been inside a lighthouse and being able to climb to the top and experience the views and feel the beach air with My Princess!
To see the history on cards on every landing!

By Ben C |

Excellent lighthouse. A wealth of information on the tour. This has 167 steps, with plenty of landings to take a rest, if you need to. There is an information placard on each landing, so you can stop and read about the lighthouse at each one. The views at the top are fantastic!

There are still other buildings here from when the lighthouse was in operation. Take your time and enjoy the tour.

By tandspfau |

great view from the lighthouse. Very reasonable price of 2.00 to climb it and a beach to enjoy. Loved it.

By christyoverall3 |

My daughter and I visited in August 2020 and really enjoyed it. They're requiring that you call and make a reservation for when to visit, to limit the number of visitors at once. They're also asking that visitors wear masks. It's a decent walk up, but such a beautiful and historic light house. And the view is awesome. Plus the island drive is awesome. There's also a beach within walking distance. Go!

By Pattie B |

Climbing the lighthouse at Hunting Island was definitely worth the climb. The view at the top was amazing!!

By Alan Wks |

Drove out to Hunting Island State Park and it was worth the trip. We went for sunrise. Beautiful long stretches of uncrowded wide beach that ran for several miles. Good for shelling. Sunrise was spectacular across the marshes, on the palms and lighthouse. We were here in the off-season and the lighthouse was closed but we could still walk around it. Beautiful. Nice public restrooms at the beach parking. The entrance fee was $8.00 per car. The roads are bad. Broken asphalt, gravel, pot holes. We hope they make road improvements. I can see this being a very busy beach in summer. The no-seeums were a bit annoying so take bug spray. We would go back for sure and stay for a few hours. Go early for a parking spot.

By dennisking770 |

Drove 1.5 hours to see the island and lighthouse. Fees to enter $8 per person seemed high. No discounts. Road is full of potholes to dodge and try to avoid. Wish they would spend some of those fees on the roads. Lighthouse was interesting and view was great.

By williamcrook2003 |

On a very warm 21st of August 2016 day me and my wife who is two months pregnant visited this light house and the historic architecture in the lighthouse grounds. My wife managed to climb all 167 steps whilst pregnant and take panaromic pictures and video around the top of the light house and then walk down the 167 steps again. I went around the lighthouse grounds and saw, observed and read about how life was for the people who helped run and live in and around the lighthouse and it was inspirational to me and truly interesting and well worth the time and money spent visiting this lighthouse and its grounds.

By Michael A |

This is a very nice lighthouse located in the state park. Because of the Covid shutdown there are no park rangers but you can see the lighthouse and the grounds. You can't climb up right now, either. Short walk to a beautiful, deserted beach, too.

By Steve74017 |

One of the few old lighthouses that you can still climb up the stairs to the top. It was quite a hike so if you are not in good shape or have knee trouble you may not be able to make it to the top. The view is fantastic. On a clear day you can see for about 40 miles. They have a nice gift shop and clean restrooms.

By Karen D |

Visited on a beautiful, sunny day. Blue sky and white clouds made for a great photo op. Will definitely return.

By Linda L |

It was well worth the climb to me to see the beautiful view at the top, and to learn of the history and construction of the lighthouse. We visited on a pretty hot day, but there was a nice breeze at the top. Very interesting.

By phark |

Enjoyed our day trip from Hilton Head to visit this Lighthouse. Our 4 year old loved climbing the stairs to the top however I stayed below . I attempted to climb made it up the first set and me fear of heights sent me back down. I do have a love for lighthouses.

By Meander63827 |

Family had a great time climbing the stairs to the top for the view. The guide was very friendly and relayed many interesting stories about the history of the lighthouse.

By Buddy R |

We enjoyed a beautiful day at Hunting Island State Park and toured the lighthouse while we were there. It’s only $2.00 per person. It was fun yet a little scary climbing & up at the top. Beautiful from the top!!

By Jenny M |

If you are a fan of lighthouses, this one is impressive. It is quite far out and requires that you pay to enter the state park. The sand, please are intense… you’ve been warned.

By Carol O B |

So great to see coastline preserved in its' original state vs. houses & condos. Enjoyed climbing the lighthouse!

By Wendy S |

This is the only lighthouse you can tour in the state of South Carolina. It is well worth the trip there. The beach is fantastic, as well! Only six permitted up in the lighthouse at a time. Small museum and gift shop. Highly recommend!

By David W |

While traveling in South Carolina, we asked the natives about beaches and where families are more likely to enjoy the water with less commercialized atmosphere. We were guided to Hunting island state park and Lighthouse tour. Simply marvelous, and we enjoyed the other families that were there. For a small price of admission 5.00 adults kids free we really want to make this our vacation destination..

By sc40sumthin |

Beautifully kept! The volunteer was very pleasant and friendly, informative, and offered to take photos for us. Loved visiting here again.

By mekopp |

My husband and I really enjoyed our visit to the lighthouse. The admission fee is $2 a person. The guide graciously took our picture at the entrance to the lighthouse. It is 167 stairs to the observation platform. There are large platforms every 19 stairs. On each platform is information about how far you have climbed and how many feet. There are also multiple historical facts to read along the way. The prize for the climb - the spectacular views. The lighthouse was even decorated for Christmas. Only 6 people are allowed to climb at any time, so you don't have to worry about concerns of crowding. The stairs felt very safe.

By bugsy L |

Beautiful (especially the south end driftwood area), accessible, easy well-equipped fishing pier. A nice day's outing.

By gavtmimi |

Easy climb with facts on each level. Beautiful view from top. Would have given a 5 but mosquitoes were horrendous. Wear bug repellemt and you will enjoy it more.

By kristen l |

My wife and I so enjoy the views from the Hunting Island Lighthouse, and were disappointed to hear that it will be closed down for the season due to Hurricane Mathew. As soon as it reopens we will be back, and highly recommend for families and couples.

By 723terrib |

The beach has a lot of driftwood and after speaking with a local there was told that the driftwood area is knows at "The Graveyard". Not a lot of sea shells to be found but the view is good. Did not climb the lighthouse as it was not open in the early a.m.

By Randi M |

Even though my wife only made it up 3 flights and then had vertigo, I was still able to survey the romantic vistas with my father-in-law. Beautiful.

By crenne02 |

In the very pretty hunting state park. It is smaller than expected and is a 2$ charge to go up. What was a little confusing to us is that children have to be 44” to go up... not sure why but with families that makes it difficult with small children.

By LokiTheRascal |

My husband and I were vacationing in Beaufort, SC. One of the highlights of our trip was climbing the Hunting Island Lighthouse and the beautiful vistas from the top. We would definitely recommend this site for anyone who is able to climb the steps to the top of the lighthouse.

By one2go2018 |

Been to many state parks around the USA. This one is a hidden gem from the road. It has an amazing Lighthouse and breathtaking views. Just love to go to this bach.

By 0carolyn0 |

I absolutely loved climbing this well maintained lighthouse. There were spacious landings with interpretive signs on each. The signs also tracked your progress for you. The view from the top was very nice. The history of this lighthouse was also very interesting, as the whole lighthouse had to be dismantled and moved to another location at some point. Definitely worth a visit.

By tennisj0y |

Great hike up to the top of the lighthouse and beautiful views from the top! The park just underwent massive reconstruction after Hurricane Matthew did extensive damage, but the park has done tremendous work in getting it reopened again!

By Janet1959330 |

The many displays inform of lighthouse history. Climbing to top affords great views. Very good for families as well as all tourists.
Gift shope on site.

By Bobbie E |

If you've read the book ""The Light Between Oceans," you have to climb to the top of this lighthouse. Or even if you haven't read the book, it's a view you should experience. The climb is not real strenuous; there are landings every so often if you need a rest. Just do it!

By 455luannem |

A challenge to climb, but worth the effort. Stop at each level (every 19 stair steps) and learn more.

By dixiedog2015 |

Going to the top of this lighthouse let’s you see some great treasures and not too many are open to climb to the top

By Stephanie M |

Me and my family visited the lighthouse today staff was very friendly we really enjoyed it we paid 2$ each for all of us climb it if you don’t want to climb to the top I’m sure you can go inside to take a quick look or to take a picture inside my kids made it to the top no problems but don’t recommend climbing with small children it’s a lot of steps beautiful view at the top a bit windy not sure If that is all the time if you’re in the area I would take time to go here

By 10isgirl |

It costs $2.00 to climb the lighthouse, but the views from the top are spectacular. It was a hot day and the top offered a nice breeze. The history of the lighthouse is on plaques on each landing. The site around the lighthouse had the remains of the lighthouse keeper's home and some small buildings. The site is full of interesting information.

By babbling50 |

The lighthouse is incredible. We were there on a 98degree day. We did not make it inside to climb to the top. Some friends had gone before us and told us it is quite a hike (and they are in good shape). It was nice to see it and the surrounding grounds.

By Mike D |

The shop and light house were a good visit last fall. A great view from the top! I hope that it will reopen soon so more can enjoy the site.

By Dacw6 |

Two dollars to go to top. Can see 40 miles on a clear day. Staff was informative and history was well published. Clean and safe

By Lanette H |

What can say,but wow! It’s beautiful from the ground then when you climb to the top the view is amazing! Loved how each level has where you and read about the light house and it’s past purpose. If you are abl it’s so worth th climb the view makes it!

By Guy J |

Surprised that it cost $5 a person to get in, but once in, explored and stayed most of the day it was worth it. The drive in has a Jurassic Park feel. Some decent hiking. Large beach area, though do not be expecting white sandy beaches...still it was very nice.

By Kate F |

The Lighthouse Tour at Hunting Island State Park was extremely enjoyable and priced right. Walt was informative and had a fun time doing his job.

By 211SteveS211 |

Worth the walk up 167 steps! The view of the barrier islands is amazing. Hard to believe the keeper had to carry 50lbs of oil up the stairs.

By Passport474566 |

Awesome lighthouse. Good first lighthouse for our five year old grandson. He was able to climb it all by himself and didn’t get too tired!!!

By Foodie |

Some of the original lighthouse keepers building are on the property for you to go into and view. The lighthouse is great and the view is even better! It's 167 steps but there is a landing every 19 steps for you to take a rest, so it's not a hard one to climb.

By dgyuen |

The only remaining operating lighthouse in South Carolina that’s open to the public! The placards throughout the grounds offered so much information.

The climb to the top (160’) was fairly easy, with the steps being wider and foot traffic was metered though.

Gorgeous, expansive views from the top of the lighthouse, but not for the faint hearted especially on a windy day!

For a light house to have gone through so much, originally built of brick, beach erosion was the enemy.....than it was constructed out of steel and cement...it was moved to the location at which it stands now, worth a visit if your a lighthouse fan.

By RBonTheLake |

I love the views from lighthouses and this did not disappoint. The cost was $2 to go up (or free with a SC park pass). They did have a limited number of people who could be in there at one time so you may want to go earlier in the day. There is also a height limit so if you have young ones they may not be able to enter.

By Sandee2073 |

Beautiful area surrounded by the beach, trees and greenery. The lighthouse has a $2 climb fee and the climb was relatively easy. Short steps and landings spaced out to rest in between flights if needed. I have an issue with one of my knees and it gave me no problem on my trip up or down. There is a limit of 6 up at a time and there is minimal space at the top. Of course it is windy up there! :) So beautiful to look around all sides, especially the ocean side.

By Mark L |

This is a nice little side journey to go to. It’s great views of the beach in the surrounding area from the top. There is a two dollar admission fee on top of the admission fee to the park which was eight dollars. Seems a little steep for such a small little park. Once you’re in the park I would recommend you do go to the top of the lighthouse since it is so pretty up there

By 2017boat2017 |

Over the top both figuratively and literally. Climbing the stairs is healthy and the views of the migrating barrier islands, which have caused the light house to be moved, is important demonstration of how nature rules and how we should abide. We ent win. But we can adapt.

By Susie B |

My husband was the only one out of our family of 5 to climb the lighthouse. He said it was nice but very high and at the top outside it became very windy. Mean while his climb myself & our teenaged boys stayed at the bottom and walked around the beach, and lighthouse keepers grounds.

By mikesluckywife |

Stunning view and relatively short hike up to the top. Just beware the wind gusts - my husband offered a pair of sunglasses to the ground below!

By Ken S. |

Fabulous experience! One of very few lighthouses that still allow visitors to climb to the catwalk. Reservations are required, and the park entry plus lighthouse tickets make the total cost $10 per person. Very worth it!

By Kristen A |

Pay the $2 to climb to the top - you won't regret it! Love that each level has fun facts about the lighthouse's history. The views can't be beat - it's worth every one of the 100+ steps!

By jcf1010 |

I climbed the lighthouse last year, and I have the tee shirt to prove it! So I stayed on the ground while others went up to see the gorgeous view. The couple that were volunteering that day were very nice, we talked for a while and discovered it was one of those small world moments!

By RegularTraveler_13 |

I saw a review that said "90 steps". Wrong! There are 167 steps to the top but it's worth it. I am 71 and just took my time including resting on landings if needed. That said it is a serious climb. I would also add that the going down is really tougher on the legs and you should expect tight quads for the next 36 hours or so. Enough for the climbing. The view at the top is spectacular. Photos must be taken. I didn't have a long wait to go up and when I went by the light house the next afternoon there was no line. However this was on a Monday and Tuesday. The lady that sells tickets and monitors the line is very helpful and can probably give you and estimate of wait time if there is a line. They only allow six going up at a time. They also require kids to be at least 44 inches tall.

This light is part of the state park. There is a small cost to enter. The drive to the light is beautiful. There is beach access with restrooms and showers, a gift shop, and the lighthouse grounds themselves. The light can be climbed for a $2 fee (worth the view) but be prepared for a workout - 165 steps I believe. THere are also soe historic displays in some of the original outbuildings of the light.

By melark |

There are 90 plus steps to the top, but the view is magnificient and there was a breeze as well the day I walked up. It gives you the lay of the land , and it is a lighthouse and I don't see many of those!

By Nycdlm |

This is worth the drive. Lighthouse right on the beach with great 360 degree view of the area. The walk up isn’t bad and be sure to explore the beach after. It’s got a different feel than most given the trees push right up against it.

By AdventurousAuthor |

From Blackbeard the Pirate to a 7.0 earthquake to the dynamiting of the original lighthouse by the Confederacy (to compromise the safety of Union Mariners moving down the coast) the Hunting Lighthouse is a lovely stop with a fascinating history on the coast of South Carolina. The staff was very cordial and the $5.00 + $2.00 admission was quite affordable. The coastal view from the top of the lighthouse is well worth the climb to the top. The visitor center offers a very informative film about the history of the site. If you enjoy history, you'll appreciate the backdrop for this wonderful landmark.

By msa23_2000 |

It’s a lighthouse surrounded by palm trees. For $2 you can walk to the top. Clear cool day so we could see for miles. It’s a great way to spend a half hour. Beautiful to explore and then we walked in the nearby beach looking for shells.

By Fred M |

If you like lighthouses the lighthouse at Hunting Island State Park belongs on your must do list. Sitting at one of the islands most popular beach entries, this lighthouse adds to the history and beauty of the area.

By VirginiaCouple |

Got to enjoy the surrounding beaches after one night's dinner in Beaufort. Gosh it was amazing! Clean bathrooms for changing too.

By Margaret B |

Well documented with remains of original home laid. Beach is beautiful and pet friendly. Plenty of parking but not sure this holds for summer months, Getting a SC State Parks pass for seniors is the way to go!

By Tricia S |

Every time I go to Hunting Island, I feel like I'm driving into another world. It's a tropical paradise, with palms, live oaks, and ferns everywhere. And then, there's the beach.......

By cathylackey |

Love love loved it here. It is a great place to visit and an absolutely beautiful setting. Come have a picnic here.

By Carla Z |

We were there Labor Day weekend, cost to climb is$2/person+ the entrance fee to the state park, we were camping so our entry was part of the camping fee. There are 136 steps, my son says!! this is the 3rd time we have climbed, its always breath taking, to climb & then the view!! Hurricane Hermine had swept out the clouds, SOoo you could see nearly to Charleston to the north & Savannah to the south!!

By Joyce S |

Honestly, I think they are all beautiful, and full of history, worth the time to explore and learn about their contribution to their area and the history within. Timeless pieces of architecture.

By Ambajejus |

There are 167 steps to the top of the lighthouse with stops at each level to read interesting tidbits about the lighthouse. The view is spectacular!

By Debbie A |

My husband, daughter and granddaughter went to the top of the lighthouse last Monday (7/18). They all loved the view when they reached the top. My 11 yr old granddaughter even loved climbing the stairs, although it wasn't my husband and daughters favorite part. I think my daughter said there was 168 steps. I wisely decided to look in the gift shop while they did this activity, as I knew I wouldn't be capable of such a strenuous activity. They all agreed that it was worth climbing the steps, to see the beautiful view at the top.

By Prattypete |

It’s a little expensive to get into the park and then you have to pay $2 to climb lighthouse. If you consider the fact that your $$ is going to maintaining the park and conservation of the lighthouse, you feel better about spending $35 to climb the lighthouse :)

By linda s |

We made reservations in advance. Our group of four made the first climb of the day. The 45 minutes allowed per group is more than sufficient. We found the climb to the top well worth doing. Try for a clear day, of course! Also provided are informative plaques as well as outbuildings that provide additional information. They are worth the time. The staff here proved exceptional, knowledgeable, and friendly. At $2 per person this is a great value and fun opportunity.

By SGDH |

After paying $5 park admission, you drive along a paved, narrow, twisted road through high and tropical trees untill you come to the lighthouse. Just off the most gorgeous beach, it is beautiful. If you want to climb it, you sign up, pay the two dollars and wait. They only allow six people up at a time so you may have a wait. There are a lot of steps and it gets tighter as you ascend. The metal steps are open so you can see down - not good if heights bother you. Well worth it.

By TundraJayco |

Due to extensive damage from Hurricane Matthew access to the beach and lighthouse are now closed. If you find yourself in the area anyway there is a small nature building run by the park (keep driving by closed park entrance) that also has a pier. Unfortunately, much of the pier was also damaged by the storm but you can walk a little way out for a nice view. It is a pretty drive but remote for the most part with the lighthouse closed.

By missangelakay |

The lighthouse was so beautiful you can take fabulous pictures from the top inside they have plenty of info as to what the lighthouse is used for as you walk up you can feel the history the iron steps the exquisite scroll work it’s really a neat place two dollars admission to go to the top of the lighthouse which will make your legs hurt but it’s worth it if you have a premium park pass that will cover your parking your admission and the admission to the lighthouse and you can get them from the state park website wonderful wonderful lighthouse and staff

By Chantel G |

Our 1st time to visit Hunting State Park and the Lighthouse. And the place is beautiful! We were there on a Saturday afternoon and had to wait about 30 minutes to enter the lighthouse but it was worth the wait! It was pleasant outside but a bit warm as we climbed higher but oh wow!! The view from the top will take your breath away! There are educational displays between each of the 9 landings so feel free to stop and read and take a break! I have had a hip replacement and need one on the other hip but was determined to make it to the top and did! This lighthouse is amazing!

By Samantha_Boring |

After spending a day on South beach we drove to the lighthouse. It is $2 a person to climb and I did see a 44in tall height requirement for young ones. 137 steps if I remember correctly but it is a great hike to the top. There is landing after each set of steps so you can catch your breathe before the next set. The view from the top is awesome and the breeze was great. Overall recommend this for a good to do.

By Mage G |

be ready to climb stairs, there's no other way to the top and it's a must see at the top to enjoy the beach and beautiful view from the top!

By JandA4321 |

We enjoyed the climb up the lighthouse and the view from the top. The associate on staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. We are glad we visited the park and the lighthouse.

By ACE9697 |

I love Hunting Island. As you drive in it feels like Jurassic Park with the thick palms, evergreens and marshes with a beautiful beach and lighthouse reveal themselves.

By bpbmooring |

My wife and I climbed this lighthouse last weekend and enjoyed the views from the top. While it costs $2.00 to walk up the 167 steps, it is well worth it. There are no hand rails when you first start down, and the first few steps should be done cautiously, but there are landings about every 25 steps, so you can rest. Be sure to lift up the 50 pound bucket of hot oil to see what the lighthouse keeper had to carry up all the stairs several times a day and you will really appreciate how hard they worked. On the ground, look at the several buildings near the old house that house memorabilia and interesting facts. Docent was knowledgeable and very pleasant, and she even took our picture on the steps. Enjoyed this all very much.

By fkates |

The hunting Island Lighthouse sustained very little damage from the Hurricane in Oct. The park however remains closed pending restorations.

By Donna L |

Really enjoyed seeing and climbing this Lighthouse. Really well taken care of. Lots of interesting history. Friendly volunteers.

By scootervol |

I’d have given this a 5 star review if they weren’t doing maintenance on the Lighthouse steps. But because of the maintenance the lighthouse was closed to climbing. You could still tour the grounds & take pictures. The beach isn’t far at all. In fact, this was probably closer to shore than any lighthouse we’ve been to thus far.

By bplynch92 |

My family was reluctant to walk up the 172 steps with me but they did (after laying on some guilt) and they were glad they did. You could see for miles. Amazing views.

By Jason M |

Hunting Island is a great place to see palm trees and live oaks meet the sea. Climb the lighthouse and read the plaques around the grounds. A great place to bring a picnic lunch and hunt for seashells.

By Kris R |

Went there to explore the park, with our dog and adult son. We had a chilly overcast day but it was still awesome! The climb to the top (w/o the dog lol) was shorter than other lighthouses we've done. From the sweet lady that checked us in and took our picture for us, to the views from the top... Well worth it!!

By Stacy M |

We went in November so it wasnt crowded. It costs 5$ per person to get into the parking area and 2$ pp to climb the steps of the lighthouse.

By mark f |

Lighthouse was closed when we got there, but it is very nice and we'll maintained. Gift shop and surrounding grounds were nice.

By DRetired |

A quick twenty minute drive from beautiful Beaufort. A good way to take a break from all the good food that Beaufort has to offer. The lighthouse, although nothing out of the ordinary, was an enjoyable worthwhile visit. Climbing to the top is not a problem, even for a septuagenarian. However, they do charge a two dollar fee for your ascent. The best part of our afternoon visit was the beach area, approximately a hundred yards from the lighthouse. The beach directly in front of the lighthouse is nothing spectacular but, turn to the left and there is what my wife and I dubbed “the driftwood graveyard “. The beach for well over a hundred yards is completely strewn with fallen and uprooted trees. SPECTACULAR! This beach area is well worth the trip all by itself.
All in all, an afternoon well spent.
Oh yea, admission to the park and beach area is five dollars.
Enjoy!

We LOVE lighthouses! We've visited (and climbed) them all over the county and the world! We were so excited to climb Hunting Island Lighthouse and arrived to find it closed. I believe there had been a tragic accident that closed it down. However, we still walked the grounds and took lots of pictures! Beautiful spot and gorgeous from the beach, where we spent the afternoon!

By Tim L |

We enjoying visiting different lighthouses and seeing them was the reason for this trip. Entrance fee was $16 for the two of us (SC seniors get a reduced fee). The asphalt road in and out were in need of repair (and some repairs were in progress) with damage seemingly caused by tree roots raising the pavement surface.

The lighthouse was a beauty with the grounds and buildings within the fenced enclosure being well kept. With mask in place, one may visit the ground floor of the lighthouse. To go up the 392 step stairway one must be on the guided tour that has to be scheduled in advance.

A gift & snack shop is on site, as well as restrooms. The beach may also be accessed from this area.

By jamfan38 |

We spent an enjoyable Sunday afternoon visiting the Hunting Island lighthouse. Our guide that day, Mr. McKenzie, was patient, knowledgeable, friendly and just an outstanding representative for the park. Even on a breezy and chilly Sunday, this was well worth the excursion from Beaufort. Highly recommended. The lighthouse and its buildings are well preserved, and with its interpretive displays, the site is more than just the lighthouse. One can really learn a lot here about the lives and work of the lighthouse keepers and their families. Just fascinating.

By Merry |

To think this lighthouse stared off 1.2 miles away and has been moved is a compelling reason too see it. The views from the tip are incredible and climbing up one gets a sense of the hard work that went into keeping this running. The drive to Hunting Island makes us all appreciate what it must have been like to live and work the lighthouse all those years ago before bridges connected all the Seas Islands. So worth the trip...and the beach is right there!

By Bk5098 |

Wonderful view and was greatly maintained Love the historical buildings and exhibits which were in great shape and presented well. The lighthouse was in excellent shape and stairs well maintained. Highly recommend for any ages

By Mark |

The island is beautiful and I think all lighthouses are great. Built originally in 1859, then destroyed by the confederates in the civil war. Rebuilt in 1873, but moved to its present location in 1889. I would love to have seen how they did it. It was an active lighthouse until 1933. There is a fee to get into the park, but discounts for seniors and children. There is also a $2 fee to climb the 175 steps to the top.

By lisahD9934RR |

Go all the way to the top and take pictures of a great view. Unique museum located nearby with many historical items from bygone days of lighthouse keepers.
Lots of parking and walking areas.

By Tom C |

nice park with great fishing, quiet beach and grills for a picnic. Kids loved the lighthouse great view. did some surfcasting with some pretty good luck. Nice family beach with a campground next door

By sarali20 |

different, the people are very nice though. lots of stairs but the view after all that really pays off. is just so lovely and wonderful

By Uniquely Cullen |

Great stop to get pictures and to check out while at Hunting Island State Park. My father-in-law loves lighthouses so we had to get a few pictures for him especially. Definitely a "must stop" while in the area and a gorgeous place to see a sunset!

By 915ChrisM |

A beautiful lighthouse and beach right next to it. If you are in the area, go see it. If you go later on in the evening, the sunset will make it even prettier than in regular daylight. The beach is very nice right at the base of it with bathrooms and tables.

By Bill M |

Yes we climbed the the lighthouse on a rainy day. Well some of us did! It was a fun visit and took our minds off of the fact that every time it quit raining and we stopped to hoike it started again. I even got a tee shirt and bug spray. Do not leave the bug spray in the car.

By resident57966 |

We went to the lighthouse after a day in Beaufort, hoping for a "drive-by" view. Wrong. We could not see the lighthouse from the road or the gate of the state park.
It was also raining. There were 6 of us in the car and they wanted a "per person" fee just to get into the park, and the an additional fee to go up. We left as we determined it was not worth the exorbitant cost.

By Eve H |

We enjoyed going up into this old light house. The surprise was the house on the property that housed the family that worked at the lighthouse. The interior is updated and you can actually rent the house. It's very quaint. The gift shop onsite has some really cute shirts and souvenirs.

By Robert N |

Quiet place right on the water (duh).Nice easy strolling.Informative docent at the lighthouse. Not much to look at unless you venture to the top (I didn't)

By Deb L |

The light house and surrounding buildings are very well maintained. And the beach is beautiful. Very large. The whole area is beautiful.

By wchga12 |

Nice landings to rest between steps
Highly recommend. Only $2 per person

Interesting history of moving this lighthouse.

By mizzougalfromtx |

made reservation, as they only let 6 up at a time - great views and fun history on landings with information. Pretty neat to be able to climb the only public lighthouse in SC!

By Jim R |

We drove from Beaufort - it's only about half an hour. The history of the lighthouse was documented well by the historical markers in the park. We walked up to the top, and enjoyed the level-by-level explanations that occurred on each landing. Very enjoyable experience, and a great view from the top.

I had no idea that the shoals were so shallow in those waters until I saw a map on the wall in the lighthouse with the soundings depicted in the water. At one point, the ocean was only about 1 foot deep about a mile off shore in one location. They really needed that lighthouse back in those days to prevent shipwrecks!

By mhhayes |

Wonderful afternoon around the lighthouse. Great weather and fun times. Took lots of pictures. Would recommend to anyone of any age.

By Kira S |

I climbed this thing with my kids ages 12, 10, 8, and 6. They had no problem climbing, other than some unease when they looked down. My six year old climbed twice in a row! She did this because children under 42" are not allowed at all. We had planned on taking our baby in the hiking back pack, but since she couldn't go, my husband hung back and then he and the six year old went while the other children and I waited with the baby.

By GFaye |

It is a great lighthouse with volunteers manning the location. There is a $2.00 charge to climb but you can go in and look around the base for free. The area has displays and the beach is beautiful! We saw a sign that said cabins to rent but so far, no idea of pricing or where located. Would go back anytime.

By Barbara R |

I was thrilled to see this beautiful lighthouse here. It is well maintained and very majestic and located close to the parking area. We didn't walk to the top but o took several pictures;

By Lisa J |

What a beautiful lighthouse! And the views are great, but hang on the wind is pretty strong at the top. There is a platform every 20 feet and there is something to read on the light on every level so you get a little rest on the way up. I just love the wrought iron stairs, it makes for beautiful pictures.

By Michelle Cecchini |

Fun walking up all the steps and looking through the small windows as you circle to the top. The sites from the top were very fascinating and enjoyable.

By Corrina K |

The Hunting Island Lighthouse is magnificent ,.from the Visitor Center to the Beaches, it is well worth the drive tme and admission fee....The drive through the park is beautuflly serene . The Lighthouse is amazing and accessible for visitors who want to make the climb to the top. there are two mini museums displays historical details ... there si ample parking and beaches are well attended. A great way to spend the day.

By Tammy V |

Good for families, only $2 a person. We love the whole area.Beautiful scenery and lots of things to do.

By Diane C |

168 steps up and down and the view is worth every step...a granny and a 5 year old did just great! The park headquarters provides alot of info on the island

By Silvia M |

If near Beaufort or visiting Hunting Island State Park, a trip to the lighthouse is worthwhile. Informational plaques are located at each landing so you can climb the 167 steps as fast or slow as you wish. Children must be 44 inches tall to climb to the top. View from the top is breathtaking. We even got to watch dolphin playing near the shore. Originally built in 1859, the lighthouse was destroyed during the Civil War and rebuilt in 1875. It's $5 per person to enter the park and another $2 per person to climb the lighthouse. If you are already in the park for another reason, the $2 is worth it. If you are only going to the lighthouse, it can get expensive depending on the size of your party. Note: Some of the park areas were closed due to hurricane damage. Dogs allowed in park but not lighthouse grounds.

By cheaptravel_10 |

We didn't go up in the lighthouse as one member of our party was too short and another too old. We did enjoy the exhibits on the grounds, the sandy beach , the driftwood beach and the gift shop. All were a short walk from the parking lot. You only get a senior discount if you live in SC.

By Medina J |

If you enjoy taking pictures or climbing light houses then it's worth visiting. It's from the late 1800s, well preserved and cost only a few bucks if you want to climb. You can also pack a lunch or dinner and eat on the beach which is only a few steps away.

By TravelingBum10 |

We rode our bikes from the campground to the lighthouse. We bought tickets to go up. Only $2 per person. You have to wear a mask when you go inside. It was quite the climb to get to the top, but we’ll worth it. The views are amazing! The people working the doors are very nice. A must do if you’re in the area.

By monolos12 |

My family was very reluctant climbing up 172 steps and thought they could talked me out of it because it was raining absolutely not. The view was amazingly breath taking. I would definitely recommend anyone to take the climb its worth it.

By krandy21784 |

Beautiful piece of history...very approachable and great views from the top. Small charge to climb. Located very near the beach.

By Carson B |

The lighthouse has great views and is roughly 130 stairs to the top! Always a must do out on hunting island.

By travelwegl |

Have to see the view from the top of the lighthouse. For a small 2 dollar charge, you get to take the stairs to the top of the lighthouse. It's an easy climb with a great view. We do it each time we visit the State Park.

By IslandSquirrel |

People might be wary about climbing all the way to the top - but it really is not a bad climb. Every 19 steps is a landing large enough to stop and rest if you need to.
On each landing, there is also information to read and learn about the lighthouse.
The views from the top are amazing and well worth the climb.
The grounds are also interesting and informative about what life was like living on the island for the lighthouse keepers and their families.
The grounds and lighthouse are also well maintained - it makes for a very nice side trip.

By buckeyebatman |

If it was open, it would have been nice. Nice to look at and the surrounding were beautiful. Parking is not bad and walked to lighthouse and gift shop.

By brownie_starmite |

We have been to several lighthouses over the years. This one is clearly near the top of the best we’ve seen. Well preserved.
