If you are into photography this is a palce you want to go. Visit pavillian 10 where there is a good restroom, easy parking and a walkway with benched spaced at point that are just perfect. I saw several birds, deer, even an alligator in the water over at Pavillian 9 . I will be going back to this park everytime I visit Florida now.

Very well maintained park with something for everyone. Open fields, walking trails, and a boat ramp on Lake Tarpon. A nice place to relax and enjoy nature. There are picnic tables, barbeque and pavillions.

This is a great county park on the shores of Tarpon Lake. They have plenty of room for picnics. Numerous pavilions to choose from. The roads are all paved. Plenty of wildlife. I have always spotted gators ranging in size from small to large. Plenty of parking also.

By natalieb |

This is a beautiful place to enjoy a walk in the sunshine. Our first visit, but my snowbird cousins walk here almost daily. Seemed very clean. Walking paths were very well-maintained. Parking is convenient to walking paths.

By althea j |

We drove in to have a look, we have to return to walk the many boardwalks and picnic shelters they have there.

By poppopx3 |

You can picnic under pavilions, play baseball, birdwatch, fish, put in a boat at the ramp, jog, let pets run in their own area or just sit on a bench and watch the deer run about. It's relaxing there. I am a frequent visitor.

Beautiful nature park with quiet serene nature trails with both natural and boardwalk settings, Many picnic shelters avail;able for a large gathering and may reserve in advance for a small fee! The park is on the east side of lake tarpon , very quiet and shade cover is abundant, multiple playgrounds are also available for the children,A softball field, Horseshoe pits, and a boat ramp for lake tarpon! All types of wildlife can be seen in the park . This is a very relaxing park!

This park is just amazing. I visited because my family lives right down the street and I had never been before. It has an extensive system of boardwalks for wildlife watching, and beautiful views of Lake Tarpon. What impressed me most were all of the facilities. There are two great play areas for children, two dog parks, a boating ramp, and a bunch of pavilions that can be reserved for groups who want to grill or picnic. All of this is done without disrupting all of the wildlife. For visitors to the area it's worth going and spending a few hours in this park.

We love coming to the park with the kids and to take the dog to the dog ark. We like walking the park and like seeing the wildlife

By Runnergirl2017 |

Lots of wildlife. Deer, squirrels, gators. Boardwalks along Lake Tarpon. Boat ramps available. Picnic tables and play areas for all ages.

By Paul G |

The park was a great place to see nature from safe boardwalks . It had easy parking clean toilets and was Free.

By clearwaterdale |

Great park with various facilities, great boat ramp for Lake Tarpon access, nice trails, especially along Brooker Creek

Lots of room and very well maintained.

If you like tree, grass and the lake, this is your place!

By winrobaaa |

This is truly a lovely preserve with lots of amenities from a large lake and pond to covered shelters with barbeques and playgrounds for kids. They have a car show every year in the spring that brings out a lot of great classic and vintage cars. Our high school robotics team used to have their end of the year picnics there. Hot but with the shelter, it was much nicer.

By Mary B |

Beautiful park with lake. Nice paths for walking and shelters for picnic. Lots of birds and wildlife but watch out for gators! I didn't see any but there re signs.

By Dblnranch |

We enjoy going here to walk. It's shaded and has a nice breeze coming off of the lake which makes it more pleasant in the Florida heat.

By chriscpd98 |

Great place to exercise and walk long distances. Lots of heavily wooded trails. Great views of Lake Tarpon's south east side.

By Pamela G |

Beautiful peaceful park with great walking trails and boat access. Great place for a family picnic or company barbecue!

By treetrippers |

Lovely large park with many hiking running trails, picnic tables, dog park, playground. We saw many birds and wild deer. Didn't give a 5 due to the trails have no map or info re distance. Don't miss it if you like to see real Florida terrain

By AllisonCW |

What a pretty park! There were nice trails, with decks out onto a beautiful lake. They were picnic areas and we saw deer into spots! It was free admission and easy to park and walk around. Very nice find!

By captric1 |

Great park. It has several elevated wooden walks through swamp and woods. Located right at the south east end of lake Tarpon. It’s really a nice quiet place to picnic or just view some wildlife.

By Douglas M. L |

John chestnut is a great place to walk and hike the problem arises when you find bugs attacking you when you take the trails in the wet land section of the park

By figbay |

Nice walk areas, interesting water and developed areas. Plenty of room to view, walk or enjoy nature, with nice areas to rest and view!

By chris d |

This is a great place to get out and walk the dog. Lots of wild life to see. Nice & clean facilties. We always see the dear and squirrels while walking the dog.

By western u |

There are nice picnic shelters, plenty of parking, a boardwalk and bathrooms. This is a pretty oasis.

By FloridaRoadwarrior |

Great park located on lake Tarpon. Has walking trails, covered picnic facility, boat launches, fishing dock, dog park. Very shady, nice for a hot summer day. Free except for parking by the boat launch.

By Richard Pit |

I've been going to John Chestnut Sr. park for many years. I still call it "Brooker Creek" park because I hate the fact that they changed the name. Nothing against John Chestnut...I don't even know he is...a deceased county commissioner, I think.

Anyway, it's a very nice sized park, on Lake Tarpon, with multiple shelters & BBQ grills where you can have a quick cookout or a birthday party. It's well kept and nice.

Watch out for gators, though...sometimes they're chillin' at the edge of the lake!

By Don C |

Great place for family gatherings...a pick up softball game, birthday party, childrens playgroung and boardwalk that parallels Lake Tarpon and nature trails.
John Chestnut Park is a great place to walk, jog, and/or bike.

By Gary G |

Our family loves going to this beautiful park. Our friends live in the community next door and it's great to be able to walk to such a gorgeous place. They have a wonderful playground that our kids love, huge community boat ramp with plenty of parking, pavilions you can rent, dog park, baseball fields, observation tower, and plenty of walking areas. Great place for a family picnic or outing. We would highly recommend

By Jeff C |

Very good for family, friends, dogs, and events; we love this oasis in the middle of Palm Harbor on the eastern shore of Lake Tarpon.
We'll mannered people for the large majority of individuals, you never have to worry about a criminal element surfacing here as most people I have always seen here are safe, family minded, and solidly good people.
They also have a dog park for those that want to allow Rover to run free as long as they wish.
Couldn't recommend it more...

By PlayaZancudoDot |

We just bought a house in Palm Harbor and one of the reasons we chose this area (and there were MANY!!) was John Chesnut Sr. Park . . . what a fabulous place to have close by for a walk! There's a great boardwalk through the wetlands that is our new favorite place to go (lots of shade on hot, summer days) as well as covered picnic areas and a boat ramp. One of the walkways gives way to glimpses of Lake Tarpon - made me feel like a kid at summer camp!

By Gene O |

I had a similar experience to thor000777 where a park employee shouted at me to slow down (I was doing 16mph). I slowed down to 12 mph but he followed me and when I parked he came up to me and started yelling. When I left the park a LEO was waiting at the exit and pulled me over, the park employee had called the police!!! I explained the situation to the LEO and he mentioned that the park employee was being overzealous. Nice park, perhaps the best in Pinellas County but be careful not to drive 1mph over the posted limit!

By Gary G |

So many choices of where to explore. From Cypress swamps with elevated boardwalks to hiking along the large lake to peaceful woods and trees. You can even lunch your boat here and enjoy the large freshwater lake.

By dorisgoldman |

A very rainy weekend indeed, but a bit of sun and out we went with the kids. Great for kids and adults alike . Play ground, walking, watching birds, dogs, squirrels and lots of shade.

By 1951TinWoody |

John Chestnut park has it all except camping. Very nice day park. Walking trails, dog park, open water views to Lake Tarpon and canals. Lots of wildlife. All for free!

By Casandiego |

Going in the early morning is my favorite. Open dawn til dusk.
Some very tame deer linger next to the road just after dawn and graze in the ball field. An abundance of hawks, herons, ducks, ibis, & egrets call this shady park home and some will let you take their picture.
Shade is important in Florida. Here you can escape the heat and have a scenic walk under an abundant canopy of trees.
Besides being next to Tarpon Lake ( panoramic views on the west side of the park), the park has smaller ponds in the interior. The largest pond has a trail all the way around, about half a mile of walking.
A smaller pond has bridge crossings, so you can stop and look for alligators and birds.
There are several boardwalk nature trails that go out over the marshland next to the lake through a jungle of palmettos and oaks.
There are stands of huge live oaks around many of the picnic shelters. Plenty of facilities near picnic shelters including BBQ grills, restrooms, water fountains. The south end has a concrete boat launch for Tarpon Lake, and a secluded network of trails next to Brooker Creek.
Lots of parking everywhere and it is well maintained. There are run- free dog parks for big dogs and little dogs (two separate ones) but dogs can go out on roads & trails if leashed.
Even when the picnic shelters are full of activity, you can still find quiet trails and tranquility.
The beauty and abundance of wildlife is one of the best in the area.

By cookieglowaski |

Beautiful park and not to be missed if you are in this area. However, it should have retained its original name of Brooker Creek Park and not been renamed for one of the former county commissioners while his son was on the commission. Still, it is a lovely place to while away the hours as long as it is not 90 degrees. You can walk yourself, your child or your dog, ride your bike, have a picnic or just enjoy nature without any hassle. The park has deer and the squirrels are quite friendly.

By charliespal2 |

really nice park facilities. several picnic areas and boardwalks over the marsh. i went because of the reviews about birdwatchng. i had the bad luck of only seeing only 2 ducks and a flock of vultures...was there an hour before sunset, so should have been prime birding time...just my bad luck. tranquil place to enjoy the water though...dog friendly and very well maintained...

By Marnie S |

There are many different areas to explore. Hiking trail, boardwalks, fishing pier. We always see some wildlife- deer, alligators, nesting birds, turtles. Photographers dream

By travelphobic |

What a beautiful place ! We spent a couple of hours exploring the boardwalks and trails and saw an abundance of wildlife. It was so peaceful and just a great way to connect with nature…

By Anubus6 |

Have been to Chesnut Park many times and its a great place for all walks of life. The have restrooms, playgrounds, ball fields, pavilions, boardwalk along Tarpon Lake that includes a 3 story observation tower and a beautiful boat ramp. The boat ramp is one of the best ramps in the area and the ride from the ramp to the lake is beautiful.

By cdindot |

Nice park to jogging, walking or just watching the wildlife. The bridge connect to the 'jungle' is pretty cool. Don't forget to see the tower, you can see far.....

By Stacy C |

This park is so big. It has a lot of shelters for parties, a dog park, a baseball field, a couple of playgrounds, a big field for soccer or football, a boat launch into Lake Tarpon, and a gorgeous boardwalk with a tower that overlooks Lake Tarpon. It s a nice park to get back in touch with nature, and good for walking/running/riding bikes through.

By minna4201 |

We are lucky to have lovely parks in Pinellas County. They are well kept and often a beautiful venue for viewing wildlife, having a picnic, taking a walk or just sitting and relaxing in the scenery. Usually they're not overly crowded especially on non-holiday times. One of the best parts of living in this area is the nice parks. Enjoy!

By John I |

This park is a showplace for the county. Beautiful walkways through wetlands and higher ground. Plenty of covered picnic pavilions as well as playgrounds and a beach volleyball court. Dog parks for large and small dogs are well attended and well cared for. Highly recommend this park.

By x7525w |

This is a pet friendly destination and even has a dog park on premises broken into two sections for large and small dogs. We started there, then ventured into the park. The first kiosk we walked up to had the typical information about the wildlife but no map. There's really no chance of getting lost but we kind of fell upon the lake by accident, thinking an earlier pond in the route may have been it. The next time we go we'll definitely print out a map so we know where we were going. We were able to see some baby alligators near one of the observation piers that lets you get out over the water. There are a ton of picnic tables and covered eating areas. I noticed some had been reserved prior. It's a nicely laid out park and we'll definitely return soon.

By Frank C |

This has the nature preserve feel to it. Lots of opportunities to take pictures and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. Several walking bridges and natural waterways to observe wildlife.

By wvnavy |

This park has many features. In the park you will find 2 dog parks, one for small dogs and a big run space for larger dogs. Children's playground equipment is very attractive and safe. The park has picnic tables, shelters, lavatories and walking trails. Lots of trees - great place to bike and stroll and relax. It's a great park to explore...

By M V |

This park is gorgeous! There's something for everyone here. Located on the south end of Lake Tarpon there are several trails where you can see all kinds of wildlife; lots of deer; and it's a birders paradise where you'll find water fowl on the lake, & other species inland on the many trails. There's a ball field, play ground, rest rooms, shelters with bar-be-que grills, a small sandy beach area on the lake, fenced in dog park (one for small dogs, & one for larger breeds), a boardwalk, observation tower, boat launch, and a recycling area just outside the park.

By Holli W |

This park is wonderful. Very well maintained and cared for. The vibe here is peaceful and friendly. It's my absolute favorite, full of nicely situated spots to sit and enjoy the scenery and well maintained short trails.

By Prissy P |

This is a nice park to bicycle off road. The park is in it's natural setting. There is a doggie park inside of this park.

By Derk5658 |

I go to John Chesnut Park every morning. It is a large park with a considerable number of deer, hawks, owls, and gators. It has a beautiful walking trail on a boardwalk with numerous look out points on to Lake Tarpon. It also has a fire tower to climb. The park has playgrounds, picnic areas, and a boat launch.

By crissy |

Our favourite park in this area. So much wildlife to see & also peaceful to wander thro the trees . Seeing the deer up close is lovely, also spotting the baby alligators in the water & even larger ones on the grassy banks

By StephFerry |

Great public park. Great playground and trails! We come here every weekend. Love the playgrounds and the boardwalks.

By Gottfried K |

The right spot in the Tampa Bay area to enjoy nature and time off, very family friendly. Enjoy your party or your BBQ

By Catriona H |

This is a wonderful place just to walk and see the wildlife, deer, alligators (occasionally) I love to take my camera there to take photos. There is a small butterfly garden, a boat launch, just an ideal place for everyone, families included. Good picnic areas and well maintained clean bathrooms...I love it, my local and favorite park. Open areas for playing baseball and games. I think there are 2 wooden built lookout points - I can't say enough good things about this park - there is much to explore!

By Shane M |

Love taking the kids here for picnics and playground. Get there early and you can catch the dears grazing.

By Dan M |

This a very well kept park.. The last time in the park we saw several deer and gators.. There are several trails some boardwalks and some dirt.. If you have youngsters, they have several play areas.. If you love wildlife and being active this is the place for you...

By Stingers2015 |

Area is kind of confusing driving around, very wooded and very shaded area, large pavilions with picnic tables. Saw two small alligators, turtles, birds. Nice playground for small children

By Chuck B |

John Chesnut park is one of the parks in the Pinellas County park system. It has 10 pavilions for picnics or other activities (i.e. parties) and is located right on Lake Tarpon. There is a boat ramp and dock for those who are nautically inclined and lots of interesting trails where you can enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

By Gena C |

My friends told me about this park which is about 10 minutes from my home. I've been meeting friends there to take some walks. It is beautiful and one of my favorite area parks.

By Terri C |

The park is home to a plethora of wildlife located adjacent to Lake Tarpon in Palm Harbor, Florida right off of East Lake Rd. Hidden somewhat from the busy highway, you will find a nature oasis. A perfect place for nature enthusiasts and families. The park offers a place to enjoy some peace and tranquility. There are various forms of wildlife and waterfowl for the nature lover.

It offers plenty of parking, two playgrounds, pavillions for picnics, a softball field, dog park and 3 nature trails running through the cypress swamp. An escape from the fast paced everyday routine. It is a place to go and relax, enjoy the beauties of nature and spend a few pleasant hours with family and friends. I particulary enjoyed the quiet atmosphere, the unspoiled grounds and the easy access to all the facilities in the park. No crowds was a plus as well. A nice place to get away from it all. I would highly recommend visiting if you get the chance.

By Shannon I |

Love the trails and water here at the park. The wildlife is always abundant and makes a great place to relax and enjoy nature. Worth taking a few minutes out of the hustle and bustle to enjoy this park!

By nanM9003KN |

This park is a great place for a peaceful walk, bike ride or to go boating. It had a lot to offer. Try some of the paths too.

By Robin F |

I'm here on a regular basis. The park is lovely. The trails are easy to follow. Bikes are allowed. Dogs must be on leash. You can bring food and non-alcoholic drinks. If you are having a group you should reserve a shelter ahead of time. They have about 9 picnic tables under a roof- There are grills at some shelters. The only negative is that not all shelters are near an open restroom-especially in winter. When you are near the water watch out for alligators. There is a large playground for children. Lots of parking

By Janna64 |

I went to this park the very first time to join the local Audubon Society on a bird watching hike. The park was so lovely I spend nearly the whole day there. I started the day seeing two large groups of deer, then lots of birds, some turtles, gators and butterflies. It was so beautiful. I'm looking forward to going back and exploring more. I was told if you go early (I was there at 7:45 am) you are very likely to see deer.

By Ken J |

Not many places to let your dog have free run in Florida.
$150 fine if you take your dog on beach in Indian Rocks.
This park has segregated runs for large and small dogs.
Most owners and dogs very friendly

By NuK1 |

I used to live close to this park and bicycle there often. For a local park, it has quite a bit of amenities. There is a boat ramp into Lake Tarpon. There is a tower which gets you about 3 stories up for a good view of things. Separate Big and Small dog park areas which many folks utilize. Pavilions that can be reserved for events have grills (I have memories of cub scouts in a similar setting!!). There is a wide open area for some frisbee or football or snoozing on the grass. I seem to recall a volleyball court. What I really liked is that the road at the back of the park is a big circle...perfect for speed riding for exercise. There are some ponds on the property, but beware as there are gators in them. You can stand on the bridge over the water and watch the gators, turtles and fish. At nighttime after closing, I've been able to peek into the park and see many deer. Also, no shortage of squirrels, but please do not feed them.

By Anne F |

One of the best parks in the area that I have found. So much to do. Boat ramp, boardwalks, playsets, etc. Lots of space and area for running and activities. Saw at least 12 deer. Right on the lake as well.

By Liverpool1963 |

Great park to visit to see Alligators and turtles. Free to the public. Restrooms on park.A lot of people where having birthday party’s and picnics. But you can go find quiet spots

By wjm8309 |

The park was very relaxing with excellent walking and jogging trails. The park is very well maintained.

By Hondo 1 RPCV |

What a cool place. We saw all sorts of wildlife from cardinals to a gator. Quite a few wooden bridge trails to roam, a nice play area for kids, and plenty of space for a picnic. Didn't cost us anything and my teenage children were entertained. The lookout tower gave a good view of the area.

By Cindy U |

This bar has lots of beautiful trails Through the Jungle type Wilderness where you will see alligators in the wild, families of deer up close. there are lots of squirrels that can be very aggressive if you were having a picnic which made me a little nervous. there's also a longboard walk along the lake with beautiful scenery of the lake. Beautiful breezes lots of shade trees plenty of parking 2 playgrounds a dog park. Just a perfect place for a family picnic outing.

By b p |

This park has it all. Great walking/boardwalk trails on the lake, dog park, playgrounds, beautiful picnic areas on the lake and more. If you go at twilight, you will almost always see some baby alligators. We have seen deer there as well.

By Mavi46 |

Beautiful park, great for bird watching or spotting an occasional alligator. Love the boardwalk trails

By Mark S |

We stopped here to kill a little time in the afternoon. We decided to check out a little bit of Florida that we never get to see. Usually were at some theme park or amusement park. This place was pretty neat in woodsy. On this day it was in the mid 50s and windy not your typical Florida weather. We decided to walk on the boardwalk wooden trails along the lake. Also the bathrooms situation is a little weird but you have to see it to know what I’m talking about. Otherwise it looks like a popular local place for picnics or family get together‘s.

By HonJamm |

Super park for a few hours... Good boardwalks for wildlife spotting, free parking, children's play area. We saw deer and an alligator. Lovely lake with quiet shelters.

By charliespal2 |

This is a nice park with many picnic areas. However, there are many boardwalks throughout the park but there is a NO DOGS posting before you can get on the boardwalks. So you can't take your dog with you on the nicest parts of the walks around the park. There is a dog run in the park. Also, we saw several alligators in the ponds/lakes and there are signs warning people to be aware,.

By Debra M |

I walk with a friend during early morning hours. There is abundant wildlife and great bird watching! There is a dog park, a boat ramp, an observation tower and picnic pavillions. Really enjoyable rain or shine!

By kathryn b |

Whether you are choosing to wander the trails, guide your boat along the shoreline, or sit for a picnic, this park is everything you want.

By Eden P |

This is a great park, very spacious and with easy access to lake tarpon. There is a lot of wild life such as alligators and birds. There are also great BBQ and picnic spots. It is one of the best parks around with plenty of parking.

By Alyson G |

Awesome park for a nice little Publix Sub picnic with a date. We easily found a table under a canopy of tall trees with a water view. Definitely a gem I didn’t know was there after 20 years living/working in Pinellas / Hillsborough.

By mariell98 |

Great dog park. Lots of shade, large and small dogs are separated. Nice walking and picnic areas. Beautiful views of Lake Tarpon.

By Wendy L |

I live close to this park and it's one of my favorites. Driving through it won't give you the full effect. You have to get out of your car and look for the trails. There are boardwalks that take you over a swampy area, a waterway and lead to walking trails. As you enter the park don't take the first right. It's the exit and you'll find yourself having to loop around to the entrance. If you make a left it will take you to the boat docks. Keep going past the boat dock area and it takes you to a trail that leads you to a tower. There are trails that walk along a creek and have benches for sitting. Instead of making that left, go straight over the bridge. You'll have options to go right, left or straight ahead. Left takes you to swinging benches. Straight eventually leads you out of the park and right takes you to another bridge. right before that on the right hand side back by the water is a trail that leads to the boardwalk over the swampy area. Although this parks trails could be marked better it's been fun finding new turns. If you take the boardwalk trail by the boat dock, look to the land side for the alligators. NO they won't be able to get you but it's fun to catch a glimpse of them just sunning themselves. There are many picnic tables throughout the park in many different settings. These don't need reservations but don't have a grill. There is a kids play area and a good sized dog park split into two areas. One for large dogs and one for smaller dogs. Dogs are allowed throughout the park except on a few of the trails with the boardwalks. Best time to go is early morning if you want to see nature at it's finest. It's so quiet and and as you walk you'll see lots of deer, wild turkeys and birds of all kinds. The deer aren't intimidated so you can get some really good up close shots. I could write a book about this place and even though I've lived here and gone here at least once a week I it always feels like a new adventure.

By Ivanna R |

I went on New Year's Day and seemed to have the place (almost) to ourselves. It was freezing, but seemed like a great place to spend a few hours with kids or for a picnic if the weather is nice. We saw lots of deer, and the boardwalks are nice. We did have to drive around the park twice before we realized there are trails everywhere randomly. We were looking for some kind of sign. If it was warmer we could have just followed other people, but there wasn't anyone to follow. I'll definitely go back.

By Lou B |

When you arrive at Chesnut Park, you don't expect to see deer wandering around. We would recommend you not try to feed them although they look pretty friendly. Once you get beyond the deer sighting, the walk though the rest of the park is breath taking. Paths lead you along the lake edge where an occasional alligator may be sighted in the near distance. Of course, many different birds draw plenty of bird watchers. Enjoy!

By Tami T |

Chestnut park has great walking trails and boardwalks. At sundown deer roam making the park feel far from everything but the park is close by and easy to get to. We usually look for animals and see alligators, birds, hawks, and rabbits as well as the deer. The tower on the boardwalk gives a great view of Lake Tarpon and a treetop view of the trees and birds. This is a great place for picnics and walks.

By tclarkku |

I love this park. My favorite. Go early or late in the day to see the deer. I have been going here for eight years.

By Ed M |

This gem is located so close to East Lake Road that sometimes, you can hear the traffic while walking in what otherwise is a totally untouched Florida forest. But there are trails that take you away from the crowds, away from civilization, away from rush and noise. Excellent picnic areas, good views of Lake Tarpon, marvelous boardwalk trails through pristine wetlands. We've seen squirrels on the handrails, alligators, turtles, hawks, owls, deer (of course) and wild turkeys, to say nothing of a dozen or more types of wading birds and ducks. We love to find a quiet little corner for a picnic lunch, and then to read out in nature.
The park also has an excellent dog park, children's area with swings and climbing stuff, and great biking.
We love it!

By JeannieTP |

We spent a couple of hours walking along this boardwalk, viewing alligators, snakes, turtles and birds. Well kept, free, accessible.

By marvin0630 |

This park is absolutely beautiful! They have things for children to do, fishing, pavilions for picnics and plenty of nature to see. The best thing is, it's all free.

By GlobalTrekkers |

This is a wonderful hidden gem in the northern part of Pinellas County. There is a nice nature trail that runs along Lake Tarpon, through a forested area and along a boardwalk through a cypress swamp. There are several picnic shelters and clean restrooms. The only thing missing is a campground. Pinellas County is missing the boat by having only one county park with camping. Neighboring Hillsborough County has three.

On December 23, 2018, I entered the park at about 4:25 p.m. and was driving slow and at a prudent speed when a park employee got behind me and started to harass me and honk his horn at us. I was with my wife and we were just checking the park out on our way home from another park. There were young children kicking a soccer ball on the side of the street, families walking with their kids on the side of the road, and people just strolling down the road on the side of the road.

This guy approached my truck from behind with a purpose, this was not a chance meeting he was driving at double the speed in order to catch up with my truck. I noticed his small light on top of his truck and continued driving at what I felt was a safe and prudent speed given the conditions. He honked his horn at me and was following my truck so close that I could not see the front of his official white vehicle.

I then pulled to the side and waved him through and in turn, he waved his hand as if wanting me to continue driving. I refused to move and he got out of his truck and walked to my window, and abruptly, he then screamed at me and told me that I could not double park in fact lying and framing the real situation of his harassment under a lie, and walked back to his truck. As he walked back to his truck I told him that I was not double parking that I had stopped because he was harassing us.

When I was exiting the park he was waiting for us near the entrance of the park. This individual has issues that should be addressed by the park administration and I will be contacting the Office after the holidays to deal with this matter. Employees of the park who go around harassing people who are being cautious and careful and taking into consideration the safety of others and the environment are obviously a bad fit for the park.

I am 60 years old, I am a vet, and I was driving between 10 and 13 miles per hour (speed limit is 15 mph) and there was no other car coming towards us. I pulled to the side to allow him to drive by and he did not, meaning that he was not heading anywhere. I was driving slow because number one it is a park and there were lots of deer on the side of the road, children playing with balls and people walking on the side of the road. This guy was rude, a liar and malicious. I guess they hire the first derelict that applies and walks off the street for the job.

By calvinater1 |

This must be one of the most popular weekends for families to have a picnic. We had to book 52 weeks in advance to obtain a picnic site. The site has everything you would want. A covered area, a play area, lots of parking, and Great access to the trails and waterfront. It is easy to unload food and chairs from your vehicles to the picnic site and no worries about having seniors join us. Each site is quite separated from one another so there is plenty of privacy. There is a playground for the young ones to enjoy. Bring your own barbecue or coals for the on site ones.

John Chestnut is a great peaceful park. Always walk the trail and see alligators along the way. It had a dog park and regular parks for kids. Great for a family.

Super nice State Park. Miles of boardwalks to view all kinds of wildlife, deer, gators, woodpeckers and tons of birds along Tarpon Lake. Highly recommend for the one that loves seeing nature and getting exercise!!

By Laurinda W |

Wonderful place for easy hiking and enjoying Florida wildlife. The boardwalks are lovely with lots of picture-taking opportunities. Excellent picnic facilities, boating, and a dog park. This park is well maintained and has something for everyone.

By Lauren C |

This park is beautiful and a great way to spend your day with the family. My kids love the playground and it is nice because it offers a little and big kids play area. We have seen deer and gators here and love to come back to check out what other things we may find.

By CaptainCabinets |

Large park with decent wide trails, plus bathroom facilities! Highly recommend the walking trails - plus the park is adjacent to the Pinellas Trail. Being with nature makes you feel good!

By Troy M |

Great place for walks and much wildlife to see. Trails and boardwalks plus a boat ramp and picnic pavilions. Lots of birds and gators are around. When in grassy area's by the water watch for them.

By Sista94 |

I love this park. It is very shaded and has something for everyone. There's a dog park, child area, and you have access to Lake Tarpon. There's plenty of shelters to set up picnics. I loved seeing deer. It's definitely worth a drive.

By Memasmb |

Park has great areas for dogs, children, celebrating special occasions, boat ramp, restrooms, great walking paths. Park closes are sunset.

By karen g |

I don't usually like parks where there is wildlife. Way to rustic. But this park is beautiful and calm. Really lovely landscaping and if you have younger children you will love it

By Rn4131951 |

Great park. Big park. Boat ramp. Lots of walking trails. Picnic tables. Has a nice dog park. Restrooms. Clean pleasant park to spend the day.

By Onecheermom |

Great place for a picnic, many playgrounds, walking trails, small dog park. On lake tarpon. Picnic areas, boardwalk, boat launch. Great place to spend the day. You can rent shelters on their website for a fee.

By Tony and Ethel L |

One of Pinellas County's hidden gems. Not frequented by tourists in general. Right on Lake Tarpon and with great walkways through the forest.

By KeswickElizabeth |

An amazing park, enough room to walk without running into others. 2 huge dog areas, children's play areas, shelters, lots of washrooms, board walks, and lots of area just to keep moving. I highly recommend visiting this park.

By Teakwo23 |

Nice park to walk and watch nature. Trails are not really long enough for extended runs or bike trips.

By onemichael |

This is probably one of the best parks in this park of Florida. There are several trails including the North trail and includes Peggy Park Trail to the south. Every time I have been on one of the trails I come across wildlife be it birds, birds of prey, deer, squirrels, gators, woodpeckers, etc. It is very peaceful here. The park is over 2 miles long and many of the trails follow along the water. There are many people that walk here almost everyday. And if you ask if they have seen anything exciting they might just share their secrets. :-) Be friendly, as this is a friendly place, and people love to share. There are many shelters available as well. Enjoy your peaceful walk or run and come back often. Things can change daily.even from morning, noon to afternoon!!!

By JuliaReitor |

It's huge, clean, has plenty places to park a car. There are lots of BBQ spots and shelters. Great for a picnic

By Evan B |

My wife and I will go here from time to time. Its a wonderful park with lots to see. Whether you want to relax near the water, have a barbeque under a pavilion, or taking a short hike through the trees, this park has it all. I love this park!

By aviator320 |

This park has a peacefully secluded feel despite being in a very accessible part of Pinellas County. What really sets it apart are the several amazing boardwalk nature trails that meander through the wooded swamps of Lake Tarpon. The observation tower is always a favorite too.

By Juan A |

is a nice park too make picnick Boat Ramp nice place too walk very close too the supermarket and Gas station

By 84litsad |

Beautiful park, maintained, and spacious...families will enjoy the pavilions for reunions or celebrations. Dog park within so the entire family can enjoy nature at its best. Boat ramp and trails add to the variety of activities for everyone.

By Mel R |

This park is a wonderful part to meditate and commune with nature. It is great place for families, whether it is for walking, biking, and Recreation. They have boat launch areas, canoe launch areas, and playgrounds. There is fun for everyone.

By Birdman G |

We have loved this park since we moved here in 2000. Our eight year old loved the walks, the playgrounds, the birthday parties and cookouts as did our brand new baby. We walk the dog and take hikes all over the place. This is a well maintained beautiful place to enjoy. The watch tower is a must. Now that our "baby" is 15, he rides his bike to the park to meet up with friends and sometimes he just skateboards there. The have both large dog and small dog parks. And, they do a good job keeping animals in the appropriate places. The waterfowl are beautiful to watch. the woods are clean, too. And, they have plenty of restrooms all over the park. I hope this park stays the way it is. It is so naturally beautiful.

By Andi L |

We have been going to this park for years and it has always been very clean and well maintained. The playground is fun for the kids, there's a nice enclosed area for the dogs, and there are places to run, walk, hike and explore all throughout the park.

By russ |

What a great, beautiful Park. Real Florida scenery, on the north side of the Giant Lake Tarpon. Awesome gazebos for birthday parties Etc. If you're a tourist, you can go here and just walk around on some of the trails and check out the scenery. Really gorgeous. A slice of Florida.

By Nydia V |

This is an awesome park. Love the trails n the look tower.
Great if you are out for a run; family gatherings or for your dog At dog park.

Lake Tarpon is a very large fresh water lake in Tarpon Springs Florida and this park lies along the eastern shore of the lake. This is a great place to get up close to nature here in Florida. There are many sites for picnicking and it is popular with many photographers for shooting nature and especially local birds. I don't know the total acreage but it is a large park you can drive through as well as park and get out and explore a variety of scenes on foot. This is one of the official Pinellas County Parks. There may be a small charge for parking all day, but no charge to enter the park. Reservations are available for the picnic sites.

By janmuschar |

John Chestnut is a beautiful park right across the road from my complex. What luck!!!
I can walk there easily and have spent time there alone and with friends. The views of Lake Tarpon are lovely. It's fun to watch the boaters and the wildlife. The park is peaceful to walk through during the week. There are plenty of picnic shelters and tables. The rest rooms are clean and functional. There are nice playground areas for the kids. I highly recommend John Chestnut park as a place to relax and have fun!

By Robuck11 |

This is probably the most beautiful park in this area. There are beautiful trails with the most amazing trees. Some of the trails are around little ponds while others lead out to a much larger lake. The only negative is that there are not any signs in the park so you need to navigate on your own.

By Bryan K |

This park has many diverse things to offer. The boat launch on Lake Tarpon gives you access to myriad water recreation types. But watch out for gators! Anyway, we've visited the playgrounds, wandered on the paths and boardwalks, and just hung out for a picnic at one of its many shelters. It's a beautiful park.

It also is the formal endpoint of the Pinellas Trail. You can get on your bike there and ride all the way down to Fort DeSoto. So many places to go.

Clean and well-maintained, it's worth a visit.

By anthony n |

I recommend the park. As I said, something for everyone. Red tail hawks were my favorite. Wow, you can even launch your boat there. I go often. I love close by.

By Ron T |

I enjoy visiting this Pinellas county park in order to get back to nature. Home to a herd of deer, hawks, ospreys, alligators and numerous species of birds. No fees to stop in and walk the trails or picnic. Fees are charged to use the boat ramp into Lake Tarpon.

By jamuda77 |

This park situated on the east side of Lake Tarpon is one our family goes to time and again. There are board walks, a dog run, ample picnic areas and pavilions, play grounds, and biking. This park is large and hosts all kinds of Florida wildlife; it has something for everyone and is family friendly and relaxing. Don't leave the Bay area without taking time to visit John Chestnut Park.

By Robin F |

Our knitting group had an event here on a Sat. I had never been here and was pleasantly surprised. We had a reserved shelter- Large with picnic tables and grills in each shelter. Parking is close by- Each shelter has a parking area. There are modern bathrooms close by that service a few shelters. There are playground areas, nature trails and lots of shade- There is a ball field, a dog park, and a boat ramp into Lake Tarpon. No swimming. it is well kept up and a family or group could have a lovely day here.

By CtAlexa |

Went for an afternoon stroll. Beautifully maintained. Many families enjoying the outdoors. Gorgeous surroundings. Dog friendly.

By Ymellz |

Has a nice walkway by the waterfront and into the woods with picnic benches conveniently around. Drier than parks I've been to, but that's just the climate. Apparently their gator around!

By mikeengland2017 |

Love this park. It is a great place for picnics, walking the dog, viewing local wildlife, or just getting lost in your own thoughts. There is a fenced dog park that is divided for both larger and smaller dogs. The many walking trails allow access to Lake Tarpon and alligator viewing.

By Starviagera |

So beautiful and very large boardwalks. Totally free! It has everything and good for bird watching. Too bad it started raining.

By Tiffany |

Situated on Lake Tarpon this is a nice well maintained park with pavilions and a nice dog park. There are public boat ramps available but there is a daily charge to use

By Marti W |

John Chestnut park is a hidden gem. It's a cool place to take a walk on one of the several boardwalk hikes, or just around the roads. Lake Tarpon is in the middle of this park and you can put your boat in here or just walk around the lake. There are many interesting birds and wildlife (yes, alligators too!) a lookout tower, dog play area, free compost, picnic areas, swings and playgrounds.....all so beautiful.

By Sally M |

This park has a number of nature walks, many are on Lake Tarpon. Birds, turtles, and various forms of four legged animals abound. I just park my car at one of the many parking lots and walk the nearest trail.

By jdlcbl |

We actually bought our house where we did because we love John Chestnut Park so much. Great for walks, biking in the morning, birding anytime and so many nice trails.

By michaelbSanMartinCA |

Wow! This was a great example of a Florida swamp! Plenty examples of plants, animals, habitat and environment. The paths were well maintained and paved with crushed rock and shell. There were boardwalks over the wetlands that allowed walkers to see virtually untouched natural areas. There is a viewing stand on the west side of the park on which you climb stairs to see the view. What a wonderful surprise awaits you at the top!

There were no fees and parking was plentiful. The trail I walked was about 2.5 miles and all flat. You must stay on trails to protect the environment and avoid alligators. Dogs are welcome on leads. Be prepared for the usual Florida sun and/or rain, bugs and heat.

By Kim P |

I love walking the dog at this park. So much to experience. A great escape in the middle of the county. Easy access to entrance

By waynesimm04 |

We have have had numerous picnics there by ourselves and with several friends. Have enjoyed the gators and other wild life in the park plus numerous birds. Very clean and well run park. Love it there will visit more in the future

By Megrdillon |

I truly enjoyed John Chestnut Sr. Park. The park is woodsy with a beautiful walkway that travels over the water. It is very convenient and easy place to have a great walk. It is very peaceful also!

By NickHeckel |

John Chesnut is large county park with picnic shelters, restrooms, walking trails, and a dog park. It is heavily treed and very beautiful. Definitely worth visiting.

By Christopher S |

A nice park. Lots of trails to walk. You can see all kinds of wildlife. Lots of options for those with kids for play

By jleuenberger |

I went here on vacation with 8 of my family members, ranging from 47 to 8 years old. It's a really well laid out park with clear trails, lots of diversity in flora and fauna (mangrove trees and gators and a ton of different bird species!) and the picnic and restroom facilities were logically spaced and very clean. Highly recommended if you're in the area.

By altedbaseball |

I had not been to this park in over 20 years. It is as beautiful as ever. Everything needed for a family picnic.

Lovely walkable park. Beautiful water views, lovely flora and lots of shade to walk comfortably in Florida heat.

By Dietmar & D... H |

We take our small dog to the dog park and he loves it.
The have 2 sides. One for small dogs and one for big dogs. They also have a trail that we love to walk (dogs not allowed) the trail goes along Lake Tarpon. Plenty of clean restrooms and picnic areas.

By Louisalivingston |

This large park has at least 2 different entrances, depending on which road you take to it. It's one of the best parks I've ever hiked in. However, once you're in, there are virtually no signs pointing to the way out! Be sure to study a sign near the entrance of the park because it's easy to get lost for a bit. Next time, I'd take a photo of it to help us. Sidewalks in parts of the park make it doable for the handicapped to see some of the park. Many paths split off from the initial large path, making it kind of easy to get lost for awhile. Dogs and other pets are allowed - hopefully on a leash.

By lakestgeorge |

Huge park well maintained, perfect to organize large parties (picnic areas), cycling tracks, play ground, so much to do and discover. Special events also scheduled on a regular basis

By Radiohutch |

I recently spent a half day at John Chestnut Park just surveying the scene for wildlife and other interesting subjects to photograph. This is an enormous park on Lake Tarpon with trails, pavilions, picnic benches and much more. I had not been in the Park in several years though it is less than 15 minutes from my house. I was impressed with the number of deer, many bird species and reptiles. I left with many special photos. The Park would be a great place to bring friends or a club group. I plan to put John Chestnut Senior Park on my regular list of places to visit and picnic.

By acouplewithoutborders |

Park opened at 7am and there was a line of cars waiting when we arrived. Plenty of parking all around the park. Some of the boardwalks were being repaired and closed, but the ones that were finished were very nice. Saw some great birds like Limpkins and a Great Egret eating a catfish. Very nice park. Playground was closed for replacement.

By Bob19512014 |

This park has it all. Deer wander fearlessly. Tons of restrooms and picnic areas. There is a boat launch, playground, dog park, ball fields, sandy volleyball court, trails, on and on. Busy and big!!!

By Brian Kramer |

Dog park is fenced in. Kids loved the playground. Spanish oaks everywhere. Great place for cookout. Very spread out with good walking paths and plenty of picnic areas.

By isteingerg |

Terrible experience walking dog , park was recently updated no dogs allowed on any of the trails now, Tree huggers make you feel uncomfortable for being there would not recommend . Never used to be that way will not go back

John Chestnut park is a great place to relax, have a picnic, enjoy the wildlife, hike or even walk your dog. Good for family or event cookouts as well!

By fyifirefly |

Has boat ramps, picnic areas with and without pavilions, playgrounds, walking trails, and is truly lovely with a remarkably relaxing atmosphere. Well worth taking the time to visit.

By mfklinge |

Very nice place for a walk - well-manicured and kept up - lots of parking and nice water views and stop-offs. Didn't use restrooms, but they looked nice from putside

By Cate C |

This was such an amazing park. Really wild and natural but with a nice wide boardwalk skirting Tarpon lake. Saw a gator right off along with lots of birds and squirrels. Also a tower for viewing the lake. Others paths to walk, some paved some not. Boat ramp available for $6 parking fee. Great playgrounds and clean bathroom facilities. Lots of free parking. Can’t wait to go back!

By pooky1a |

Lots of walking paths and scenic areas/vistas. Plenty of picnic tables and grills, shelter houses and restroom facilities. Loads of wildlife!

the most wonderful park to cycle in or walk or just hanging out you can fish in the lake barbecue it is just a wonderful park

By Don Q |

Great boardwalks along wonderful nature trails for young and old.
Outstanding park with boat ramp and nice picnic areas.
Challenging bike rides since this Florida park actually has real hills !
Never a bad day at Chestnut Park on beautiful Lake Tarpon.

By tim r |

Very nice park for a scenic hike. The trail takes about 1.5 hours for both loops. We saw 6 baby alligators off the pier. Most of the trail is a boardwalk with lush vegatation below.

By Les K |

The park has a pretty big dog area which is always nice. Its a pretty big park. You can definetly do a good amount of walking here. Kids enjoyed the play area. I have no complaints about this place. The view of the lake is a plus. Will definetly take the kids here again.

By Cjwalla |

I typically go to John Chestnut park to use as my personal gym, but also a great place to take my grandchildren as well. There are two playgrounds one especially designed for the littler folks, a beautiful lookout tower that oversees the waters and vegetation. The boardwalk is a shady for the post part and a fun walk with the family. For dog lovers it has a two parks. A great running park, don't forget to run up and down the stairs a few times to get that great cardio workout.

By robert v |

Only spent a little bit of time there, but from what we saw, the park was very scenic and peaceful. Very nice place to see some of the backwoods of Florida without driving a long ways. I would not mind spending more time there to maybe take the more scenic trails. It was fun to watch the squirrels hoping around while you walked the paths. I would recommend for someone who to just get away from the business for a while.

By PJLOBBY |

From our home in Tarpon Springs to John Chestnut Sr. Park is a 25 mile round trip ride along the Pinellas Trail which ends there. The park is large with many picnic areas and it borders Lake Tarpon. Nice views but at certain times of the years the bugs will eat you alive.

By ceinc711 |

John Chestnut park has it all - boating access to Lake Tarpon, nature trails, playgrounds, picnic pavilions, dog park and many places to walk or jog. Love this park!!

By Darren S |

My wife and I go for a walk at Chestnut Park every weekend and have been doing so for many years, so we know the place very well. They have boardwalks, trails and paths from which you can regularly see deer early in mornings and in the evenings. Other animals that you can see from the trails include turtles, alligators, raccoons, a variety of birds and even the occasional otter. The park is adjacent to Lake Tarpon, so there are many great views of the lake. There is a boat launch at the south end of the park for motorboats, kayaks and canoes. In addition, Chestnut park also offers a number of picnic shelters, a dog park, a softball field and other amenities.

We have noticed over the past few years that many of the park's ponds have been covered over by plants, making it impossible to see any wildlife in those areas. Happily, we just noticed in the last few weeks that they have undertaken a project to start to clean up the park waterways, using heavy machinery..

The only issue I have with the park -- and it is certainly not their fault -- is the amount of trash that I see, particularly washed up along the shorelines of Lake Tarpon. Sadly, it seems that some people feel that it is okay to throw trash from their boats or while walking along the trails. I would encourage the park to promote a few volunteer days throughout the year for trash cleanup. This would certainly help to keep Chestnut Park as a gem in the Pinellas County Park system.

By snubagator3 |

This is a very nice, quiet park where one can take a relaxing walk along a nice path. Great place to get away from the hectic life, leave social media aside, and just be at peace with nature.

By Liz C |

Love this park! Great views of Tarpon Lake and various scenic ponds, quiet trails & a large dual dog park (1 side for small dogs and 1 side for large). Clean & well-maintained.

By jaybeeFL |

Took son and daughters families here in Dec/ Jan for boating, hiking, wildlife viewing and dog to the Park. A great time was had by all.
The boat ramps and docks are some of the best in the county; parking is easy, accessible and has large spaces for trailers.
Walks along the nature trails and boardwalks with their viewing towers is a real treat as you can see gators, snakes, possum, raccoons, and an occasional deer.
They have several dog parks and wonderful playgrounds.
Numerous picnic areas are available and they come with covered pavilions.
We residents of the county are extremely fortunate to have a parks system with jewels like John Chestnut Park.

By Mark R |

Beautiful park. Lots of picnic areas, boat ramp to Lake Tarpon, ($6.00 fee which is very cheap for Lake fun), dog park (fenced in large area) and plenty of recreational areas for nature's beauty. A few beautiful views of the lake and fun for the family. NO SWIMMING ALLOWED...

By dlSophia16 |

good place to walk and watch nature. Bring a camera, bug spray and sneakers bird watch name the trees

By mek99 |

This large park is situated on Lake Tarpon with miles of trails near and away from the water. Many trails have a boardwalk due to areas of bogs and wetlands. There is much wildlife to be seen in the park including alligators, deer, and birds. There is a large dog park and multiple play areas for children as well as covered pavilions for picnicking.

By lovetravelingplaces |

on the shore of Lake Tarpon. Places to walk, playground, boat launch, picnic areas. Great place to spend the day on land or in the water

By Jamy H |

Awesome park. Lakeside beauty. See deer, playground, walking trails, boating, picnic areas, it is all there. Just watch out for the squirrels, they can be clever and want your food. We went to the top of the look out tower on a sunny day and the view was awesome!

By Joey L |

Trails, asphalt, shade, sun, wildlife... Great place to run. Oftentimes you will run into others training for races. Mostly flat other than on the trails.

By Mike B |

Took my family which consists of three adult children and 4 of my grandbabies I call my G- kids. got there early around 8am and we're grabbed (1st come 1st served) a covered picnic patio. 4 huge benches and a charcoal grill. Rented a pontoon boat for the day (off of us19) for fishing and cruising on the very large lake tarpon. Had a fantastic day. took a hike on the nature trail when fishing on the boat played baseball in the field and the littlest of the kids played at their own mini Park while the adults played volleyball. Cooked up a feast and really really enjoy the day no charge that is parking closes at dusk. Hidden off of McMullen Booth Road in Palm Harbor half mile North of Tampa Rd bon west side. It was like taking a wonderful, stress free inexpensive mini vacation with the family!

By susann w |

stopped by this park to walk the nature trails. Beautiful park with many trails to walk. There are playgrounds for kids and benches for adults to rest. not a busy park but close to the water. Many birds to look at and seashells for the kids to find.

By Roberen72 |

Nice area for walking or having a picnic. There is also a dog park, but not sure how that is since I don't have a dog!!

By Cherry_Wonderdog |

Really exceptional park that I visited with my son after a morning at Clearwater Beach. It’s reminiscent of old Florida, underdeveloped, with a feeling of nature undisturbed for decades. The pathways were open and beautiful, leading to a variety of shrubs, trees, grasses, and luscious vegetation.

Early on in our stroll, we followed the grasses towards the water, and sure enough, we encountered a crocodile basking in the sun by the water’s bank. No, we didn’t lose any limbs, nor were we attacked, so consider that an additional plus for why we had a good time.

We enjoyed the excellent boardwalks (made of amphibian-impervious composite material), educational material on invasive species, inquisitive squirrels, diverse avian wildlife, and succulently scenic swamp. And all of this was enjoyed with very few people around and at no cost.

High marks on Cherry Wonderdog’s rating scale. Enjoy!

By unionboy |

Many areas to walk and see the wildlife, plenty of different bird varieties, gators and other wildlife.

By Brenda W |

You can pretty much count on seeing a gator overtime you go to the pier. The babies are so cute. The deer are always about as well. Lots of turtles and birds.

By Footprints717278 |

Beautiful view of Tarpon Springs Lake .Great place for boating, running, fishing and just kickin back and relax.
Alligators live this area too but don’t worry you are well protected.

By deapasquale7 |

We love this park! This park has nice walking trails, for joggers or family walks. Wild life viewing areas, just stay back from the edge of the marshes, warning signs for alligators. Although we never ever have had any issues. Nice playground for the kids! Check it out sometime, you'll enjoy it!

By Samuraismom |

Lots of folks enjoy the small dog park area that we visited . Dogs of all sizes were having a great time.

Nice trails and picnic areas everywhere. Nice park located on Lake Tarpon. Very family friendly.

By lilmsctfsh |

Fun for a place to walk around and see deer, and other critters. Nice trails and family areas. A great idea for a family get together or birthday party.

By Craig H |

Love the 300-acre John Chesnut Sr County Park on Lake Tarpon. We visit and walk the trails there almost daily.

By nnmercman |

This is a vast area of park operated by the County and can be confusing to drive round at first so perhaps the easiest thing to do is park up, take a hike/cycle ride/walk/jog! Nice boardwalks next to the lake and if you have a dog there's an enclosed area for them to romp free (otherwise they should on a leash). I saw two large children play areas plus plenty of open space for kids to let off steam. As well as restrooms there's numerous picnic areas which can be reserved. I did notice some floating trash washed up In places - the usual plastic bottles and cans which rather spoils the setting.

By BorninFlorida |

What a beautiful and relaxing space. Not far and will go back time and time again. Perfect trails, great for picnics!

They even have a dog park!

By Michele M |

Florida has the cleanest, family (including the dog) oriented parks. Right in the middle of a busy neighborhood. A great place to escape to but also close enough to home.

By SueInClearwater |

This is my favorite park and it’s close to where I live. It’s situated on Lake Tarpon. There is a wonderful walking trail through the park. You may encounter alligators in the lake and water around the park. Be aware and stay on the path when walking.
They have a doggie area where pets can run and play with other dogs. It’s fenced in with lots of space.
Throughout the park there are covered picnic areas you can reserve for parties, as well as a play area for kids.
Nature abounds at this beautiful park and you can see many varieties of birds, deer, turtles, dragonflies, butterflies and the list goes on.
I’ve visited this park many times and give it a big thumbs up.

By BlondieOriginal2014 |

What a fantastic park. Lots of space, dog runs, plenty of picnic tables and bar b que grills. Even on a weekday there was activity - people picnicking, biking, hiking, running their dogs. We had no idea this park was so big. Went all the way from East Lake Road to Lake Tarpon. Definitely coming back with my lunch and a good water bottle. And thanks to Pinellas County for cleaning it up after the storms - it's in tip top shape.

By Ann H |

This is a pretty park the borders Lake Tarpon. We enjoyed 2 trails and the overlook. My only disappointment was that there are more and longer trails. Nice bathrooms and a boat ramp.

By TaraR0312 |

Great park to explore! The grandkids love (we do too!) exploring the boardwalks looking for wildlife and various plants. We have seen deer, bunnies, squirrels, alligators, and many varieties of birds and butterflies. Playgrounds, picnic areas, a dog park, and grills are just some of the amenities offered.

This park is Fabulous!!! There are raised trails and piers where you can see wildlife and walk out onto Lake Tarpon.. We saw all sorts of tropical looking Birds, a small gator and a really Large Mama Gator 🐊. There were ladies in groups exercising in the woods and on the trails.. There were all kinds of palms and tropical looking foliage. The park here is Huge, it great for picnics, sight seeing, bird watching, gator watching, or just hanging out with friends..

By Kell_12Q |

I’ve been visiting this park since it was still called Brooker Creek Park and you could still swim in Lake Tarpon. When I was in college, I used to bring my books out here to study on days when the temperature was comfortable. When my children now grown, we’re little, we spent lots of time here.

The park is full of majestic live oaks dripping with Spanish moss, there are lots of picnic tables, grills, and pavilions. Its got good parking and trails.

It’s a beautiful oasis in the midst of what has sadly become an overbuilt area of Pinellas County.

It’s a very nice place to sit by yourself and read, bring young children to play on the monkey bars or ride their trikes, or pack a picnic for two to 99. And no charge—what’s not to love? Come in the winter months. The live oaks are gorgeous.

By 4ReelPete |

Nice walking dock about a hundred yards long from the boat launch and you can cast easily across the channel, in the spring it is hot for bass fishing etc.

By GeneandLois W |

We live near John Chestnut Sr. Park and feel so fortunate to have it as a resource for group gatherings, walking, playing with grandchildren at the playground, etc. We go there regularly. Unfortunately, this site does not allow me to say that except in the review itself. It is a wonderful gift to the community.

By Ginger C |

Great park for walking with boardwalk, walking trail and tower for viewing wildlife. We saw alligators and eagles, as well as many other birds. There is a bathroom and small pavilion for parties. Ballfield for playing games. Wish there was a concession stand.

By Lulabell S |

This is a great place to spend a weekend morning, enjoying the FL wildlife. The views along Lake Tarpon are varied, so it's worth several visits.

By Beth C |

This is a great park for walking & exploring nature. Lots of wildlife (gators, turtles, water foul, deer, etc.). Paved roads all through with trails, shelters & a bark park with separate spaces for both small & large breeds with friendly patrons. Easy to get to, right off East Lake Road.

By Atlanta1965 |

Our favorite part of the park was the swing that easily seated four of us as we looked out on the beautiful small lake enclosed in the park. We were two couples who met halfway between where each couple was living, and had no idea how perfect this park would be for our rendezvous. It is pretty, well cared for, and has a little something for almost everyone. Located on the edge of Lake Tarpon, it has a short boardwalk where you can look out on Lake Tarpon. A jewel of a little local park that isn't so little.

I love this park. It is peaceful and has a lot of opportunities for wildlife photography or just enjoying nature.

By Bill C |

Give yourself lots of time to wonder around this beautiful park. The boardwalks will keep you above all that you would not want to walk thru. Plenty of birds, animals, plants, and of course alligators to keep your camera busy.
Bring a lunch and enjoy some of Florida's nature.

By Laura P |

I've been to John Chestnut Park on many occasions and have enjoyed every visit. Between the lush landscape and the abundance of wildlife, you can visit for hours and never tire of it. From water fowl to white-tailed deer, beautiful plants and being surrounded by Lake Tarpon, it is an escape into nature that any naturalist, photographer or someone just looking for a break from the city would benefit from.

The park has a good sized dog park, a children's play area, plenty of picnic areas and fun activities that will add to your enjoyment of the area. I highly recommend John Chestnut Park to anyone wanting to get a taste of how Florida may have been centuries ago.

By Donna S |

This park is a wonderful place for families boating enthusiasts and especially dog lovers.
There are number of picnic spots with covered gazebos, a boat launch dock onto Lake Tarpon and best of all the dog park! The large dog park is huge with plenty of space for large dos to exercise. the small dog park is nice for them too. Both dog parks had a cool down pool for the summer so dogs can cool off after their romp or during.
Neither has been crowded when we've been there but we live very close by so we can go at times others might not. Either way this is a lovely well maintained park.

This is a beautiful park located on Lake Tarpon. There are wetland board walks to explore and an observation tower. There are plenty of picnic areas as well as ball fields and a dog park. This is just one of many excellent parks in the Pinellas County area.

Nice park, great trails, also a playground in the back is nice too. Can be buggy sometimes but overall great park with lots of shade

By Molly Durnas |

Nice trails, beautiful to walk or bike around. A wonderful place to get in touch with nature. I often bike here for some peace and quiet.

walking a trail along the water with family and my 6 year cold granddaughter. viewing the wildlife including small deer and also an egret in a nest.

By Fred L |

Great History, Beautiful walkways Private or public. Different type of park. Well worth the stop for a couple of hours

By Daniel S |

I frequent this park quite often in North Pinellas County, Florida. I am a photo buff and whenever I go there is something good to shoot, because it sits on lake Tarpon there are always shore birds, gators, turtles and other wildlife, the stands of cypress also present an opportunity for images as do the live oaks with Spanish moss and pine woods, with other flora along the trails which see great use for runners and walkers of all ages. The park also has deer which roam everywhere plenty of shelters and grills for picnickers I cannot say enough to boast the amenities of this place as there is also a boat launch with parking and a dog park where your pooch can run and frolic with others of the like, a great place and prize park in Palm Harbor's East Lake corridor if you like nature you will love this park!

By DrSandyD |

Picturesque views of Tarpon Lake, plenty of hiking trails. Boardwalks get you close to the water and plenty of wildlife. Nice observation tower by the boat launch. Nice restroom facilities. Kids play area and dog park. Something for everyone. We go often. If you haven’t been, you are missing out.

By pat c |

Beautiful park with many trees, walking paths and wildlife. Great for families with picnic benches and private picnic sites.

By JonesA26 |

Love bringing my kids here. They have fun playing on either of the playgrounds and also hunt for rocks decorated by Palm Harbor Rocks on FB. We almost always see a lot of deers, which my kids will never get tired of seeing. Great park!

By roblese07 |

First, I must thank those who decided this beautiful and natural land would stay out of the hands of developers. Lord knows it is prime real estate today. Secondly, we get to enjoy and escape to this peaceful park in the midst of suburbia via bike, walking and auto. Shelters are plentiful and vary in location with the corner 3 shelters that front Lake tarpon usually booking up first on the weekends . My family has celebrated Birthday parties there, had july 4th picnics with volleyball there, spent a day on the boat launching from the boat dock there and even held baseball practices at their ball field. Many trails for hiking and one includes a tower with a lovely view looking west across lake tarpon. A north pinellas sanctuary!

By Allison H |

this park is fabulous, great for boating, biking, walking, volleyball, small dog park, private pavilions for events, all in all one of the best parks in the area.

By Janet H |

This is a great place for an annual company or family picnic! There are thirteen pavilions which can be rented for a very reasonable price (approx $26.75 & $53.50). This can be done very easily on-line. There are three nature trails and a canoe/kayak trail that connects to Lake Tarpon. Bring your dog -- there is a dog park. The kids can enjoy playing on the two playgrounds. Bring your boat or jet skis and launch from the boat ramp ($6.00/day for parking with trailer) to enjoy Lake Tarpon. Multiple restrooms are conveniently located and are in good shape and CLEAN.

By Fearless469713 |

Beautiful park. Took a nice walk and saw deers and in the water saw baby alligators. Nice walking trails

By Donna G |

This park is just the right size. You can walk all around the entire park which is mostly treed. They also have a dog park. Quite surprisingly, the rest rooms are very nice. A nice place to bike, run or walk on the boardwalk & view the lake.

By MyLeMel |

John Chesnut Park, previously known at Brooker Creek Park is a great escape located off of Eastlake Road in Palm Harbor, FL. You have access to Tarpon Lake where many go fishing, skiing or joy riding. The park also offers volleyball courts, many shelters, great wooden walkways and much shade. It is a great place to walk, run or ride a bike.

By frqs |

2 dog playgrounds for big and smaller dogs, the kids playground further away, 2 boardwalks for walkers and bird watching - bring a sandwich and if you stop by the sidewalk near the lake on the north side of the park, and sit still, the cardinal will come share your sandwich, a favorite of my bird-loving mom. On the south side a tower will allow to see all of Tarpon lake shores. And keep on watching for sunning turtles.. and gators. Just respect those. If you see gators lying or swimming around, just don't feed them! They will soon associate food and humans and this is not the kind of animal you want to share your sandwich with!

By K W |

Great park. Plenty of shelters if you would like to picnic. If you walk the trails you will surely see the deer that are scattered throughout John Chestnut.

There are fenced in dog runs for both small and large dogs, both with benches to sit on and have a water station and small plastic pool for your K9 to cooI off in. I take my Boston Terrier on walks from the fenced in dog run around the entire park.

The view from the lookout tower is beautiful especially during sunset, at times you might be able to see a gator or two swimming along the reeds.

By Donna S |

There are many wonderful parks in the Tampa Bay Area but this park has it all! Dog park, kids playground, lake and boat launches, picnic gazebos, wildlife watching, nice restrooms. If you’re going on a cooler weekend you will need to go early because lots of people love this park.

By kellyholdsworth |

We’ve visited this park several times over the past 3 winters spent in Florida. There are numerous walking trails with the opportunity to see various wildlife. We’ve seen alligators, tortoises, & multiple birds including a cardinal , egrets & various types of ducks.

By Claudine J |

I have been a patron of John Chestnut Park for a very long time now... We are a group of walkers, and nature lovers... I have never ONCE encountered any problems with any of the rangers... they are all super polite and take great pride in their job. I have noticed that we have had a number of people who have been speeding at the park, I see it everyday. People tailgating me because they feel I am driving too slow when i am driving the speed limit...There is a county Sheriff who patrols the park and I see him quite often stopping speeders.. The rangers may wave someone to slow down. So if someone is offended for being caught speeding, double parking, or whatever.. its their own damn fault... don't blame others for your own shortcomings... And what does being 60, married, and a vet have to do with the price of beans... anyone can be caught making an infraction... even I can and I am 65... I am not exempt because of my age.. ridiculous...

By Cindy S |

John Chestnut is the best. It is clean and filled with wildlife -- I love spending time praying. And I try to run there a couple times a week.

By JeannineJeram |

What's not to like? The tranquility, the alligators, the playgrounds, the butterfly garden, the trails and picnic spots right on Lake Tarpon, the clean restrooms, the deer at dusk...a beautiful park to enjoy anytime except perhaps on weekends, especially Saturdays when it gets a bit crowded.

Grand old park of the South. Giant Oaks provide the kind of shade and light that refreshes the soul walking standing or sitting. Cool yet warm enough to enjoy a picnic lunch of cucumber sandwiches and a nice white wine. Senior Park, a place for folks with some years behind them to find comfort among the ancient oaks and plants.

By Scott C |

My wife and I love coming here for long relaxing walks along the shoreline. Perhaps the most serene park in the area and one of the key reasons I LOVE living here.

By CarrieJane R |

This is a beautiful park with many amenities! Picnic tables, restrooms, boat launches, boat parking, walking trails and plenty of green space! Beware the Gators! Never seen a problem, but they are lurking! Love it anyway.

By Kenneth I |

I use to come to the dog park regularly. Large space my dog loved. A lot of smokers come here which doesn't thrill me, but is close to home. I stopped going here after my feet got badly bite up twice. Both times wearing clean socks and shoes. Thought first time was a fluke. Also found other dogs more aggressive at this dog park. I now take my dog to Enterprise dog park. Large and calmer dogs there. S Much nicer experience.

By Karba1 |

Great place to spend some time and relax. There were hiking trails, ball fields, picnic areas, Geocaches, and plenty of wildlife to be seen.

By DrSandyD |

Lots of space to explore here on the shores of beautiful Lake Tarpon. Boardwalks are easy to navigate. Plenty of picnic shelters. Public boat launch. Cool observation tower. Clean restrooms. Dog park. Playground for the kids. Something for everyone. Don’t miss it.

By Jamie |

This use to be one of the best parks to go for walks with your dog.. Now no dogs are allowed on any of the trails(WHAT A WASTE OF SPACE). After 20yrs years of enjoyable moments there, it is very sad to see what has happened to lack of care they have for people who love their dogs. I will never go back.

By GinaHx |

Important note: it is not all boardwalk. Wheelchair was with us and able to go mostly everywhere. Is half boardwalk and half hard packed dirt. If wet the wheelchair wouldn't have made it. Deer, birds, gator etc great hike, nature!!!

By TravelVidaa |

Wow, this park is absolutely stunning.
Free entry to the park.
Free parking.
Lots of parking to choose from.
Wheel chair accessible
Lots of people walking their dogs. A fenced in dog park is located a quarter of a mile into the park.
There are adorable small deer strolling around. You can get great photos and videos of them eating and walking around.
There are fishing piers
Lots of picnic tables

I saw bathrooms adjacent to most of the picnic tables. I didn't go into them because they kinda creeped me out. I would advise always going with someone , if you use the park bathrooms. Even if they just wait outside while you do your business. Just to be on the safe side.

Really beautiful park.

By Ellen S |

This is the acerage Park to go for a Walk but it does have a Dog Park. Cant say much because we dont utilize it anymore. It also has a Playground for Kids, actually I thik it has two and it does have some Huts to BBQ under. Not sure if you have to make a Reservation for that. What is kind of neat is the Boardwalk along Tarpon Lake. Since we live closed by we take the Bike and ride around the Park. Kind of nice. People with Kids enjoy the Deer running around freely in there.

By Swimminglaura |

We visit this park often - the boardwalks through the mangroves have all been updated and are a peaceful place to observe deer and birds.

By k1sal |

An excellent spot to see wildlife and enjoy the outdoors. There are several areas where you can reserve for family outings or other get-togethers.

By gaill1 |

Love this park! Great to see dear. Birds, and getting your Fitbit steps in! Sightseeing, dog park and plenty of parking!

By stewytravels |

Hike this trail every year while visiting palm harbor. Elevated boardwalk over 2 miles long one way. Have seen deer ,turtles , alligators baby's and full size, all kinds of birds. They also have great picnic areas and several well equipped play grounds not to mention boat ramps to lake tarpon. Oh yeah a dog park also.

By 308angelinem |

My kids and I have been coming to this park for years. We all LOVE it! When there were smaller we loved taking the nature board walk to see if we could kind of get close to alligators (they can't get to us ;). The play park is nice and shaded. Great place for birthday parties even if you don't reserve shelter in time. Be sure to drive all around and check it out. Great for October runs too.

By Butch S |

Multiple walking trails inland and along lake tarpon shoreline. Encountered several species od birds throughout the walk as well as deer, squirrel, shore birds and even alligators what a treat. Great park for picnics, boating but check regulations.

By Marilyn E |

Nice paths and boardwalks. Had a lot of areas to picnic. We kayaked and it was beautiful. This was our first visit but would definitely go back and explore more.

By Josh H |

Great place to take my daughter to get out some energy. The playground area is nicely shaded under some trees. Then afterwards the covered picnic tables on the lakeside boardwalk are a nice place to relax and have lunch.

This is a Very large State Park with multiple Shelter area and multiple BBQ areas. Has several ponds and a fenced dog parks. Fenced dog parks are separated for large and small dog areas. You may be able to see Deer and Alligators at this park. Also a great walking area as the posted car speed is 15mph. You cal also see the Large Tarpon Lake and launch your boat from the Park boat ramp area. Plenty of shade and trees. The Park is sutable for everyone !

Very nice park. Big. Several areas to go. Thick woods, large open areas, picnic pads, ball field, playgrounds, dog park, several very nice trails, boat launch and a tower to walk up with a fabulous view of Lake Tarpon. One of my favorite spots to take children, do birthdays or take a lovely hike.

My wife and I recently visited this park. We walked around and came upon a number opportunities to see baby alligators. My wife and I also had packed a lunch, which we ate as we listened to the birds, and watched a pond with alligators. Very nice experience. I would return here.

We really enjoy walking in this park. The park is very shady and in Florida that's very important. The wild life and the view of the lake is very peaceful also.

By Mike |

Love this park! It has a lovely boardwalk that goes around the lake, dog park and two playgrounds for children along with other amenities. Such as ball fields and picnic areas.

By AllisonCW |

This is a great County Park with nice walking trails, boardwalks and lakes and swampy areas. We saw lots of beautiful birds and several baby alligators. There’s also a children’s playground. Everyone we saw was appreciative of the ability to get some exercise and to enjoy the wild life. It’s free to get in and there was parking in different areas of the park.

Nice clean park, good boat ramp, nice walk ways on water and land along river and through out park.
Playgrounds for children

By jsmench |

We enjoy the paths and opportunity to see lots of birds some deer and occasional hawk as well as gators. Still looking for an elusive owl
I wish the ponds were not all overgrown with plantlife but I believe there is a plan to have this cleaned up

By Ryan S |

As the title of my review states, there are MANY deer in this "city" park. Up until I visited this park, I was never able to get this close to deer before, despite living in Florida all my life. Being able to see these beautiful creatures up close in a protected environment is worth the trip to this park alone, but there are many other beautiful features to enjoy. As far as city parks go, this park is pretty raw, meaning you feel like you're in the middle of the wilderness much of the time. I visited this park near closing time, so I was not able to explore the trails that run through the park. But be advised that during the raining season, large areas of the park are saturated with standing water on the surface, so make sure you wear appropriate footwear if you plan on hiking during periods of heavy rainfall. The elevated boardwalks that run along Lake Tarpon and through the wooded area that borders the lake are very nice and peaceful.

By Kenn S |

Nicely shaded county park. Great place to do just nothing ! Good place for boating and fishing....and for a picnic. Nice dog park too.

By kah50442 |

The entrance to the park isn't all that large (East Lake Road). Once inside you will discover it very big. Nice boat ramp. Nice Dog Park, Kids play ground... Drive around and it's most likely you see some wild life (deer). Towards the back end, get out and walk - over a walk bridge - and you find picnic area next to Tarpon Lake. It is a very nice park and very busy on holidays. Next time your driving down East Lake Road, be sure to detour and see this beautiful area.

By dontchange |

This park is very large and sits on the east side of Lake Tarpon. There are plenty of walking trails, you can drop your kayak or boat or you can picnic and take in all the wild life.

By jsltennis |

This is a lovely park for family picnics. There are nice walking paths to the water. Lots of interesting foliage to see.

By 308dennisk |

Any excellent time visiting & walking trails, boardwalks etc. Lot's of wild life, marine life, fishing & picnic areas. You can leisurely stroll, sit on bench swings, bird watch etc. This park has it all.

Love John Chestnut Park. It is a beautiful serene place to go. Love seeing the deer wandering around

By Kim C |

I have been a frequent visitor to John Chestnut Sr Park and never get tired of it. This park is in a scenic, heavily-wooded area on beautiful Lake Tarpon, which is about a 5-mile long lake. There is a boat ramp which accommodates all sizes of boats, including kayaks, in addition to many Boardwalks and other trails, numerous picnic pavilions and picnic areas and benches. The children's playgrounds are new and worth the visit. You are almost guaranteed to see a deer or two (or more) every time you visit. (At dusk, you may even spot an owl or two.) You may be fortunate to catch sight of an alligator, but they aren't as prevalent as the deer. The Boardwalk by the boat ramp has a lookout tower giving you a very broad, scenic view of Lake Tarpon. As someone who is sensitive to being out in the sun, the nicely treed area is definitely appreciated so that I can spend more time outdoors. About a couple of years ago, a dog moved into my house, which gave me opportunity to start using the dog park. It is, by far, my favorite dog park because my dog can run around -- mostly in the shade -- while I can sit on a bench and keep an eye on him no matter where he roams. There is both a fenced-in area for small dogs as well as larger dogs.

As an aside, I scrolled through the reviews and was disheartened to hear "complaints" about being reprimanded by a park employee to "slow down." While I cannot speak from my own experience nor on behalf of any park employee, I have personally witnessed many cars whizzing by, even though a deer or two may be near the road, or a turtle trying to cross or even little ones that are being pushed in a stroller or young children nearby. From what I have seen of the park rangers, they appear to truly love being in this park and are committed to making it a safe experience for everyone. Sometimes it seems as if there is a constant flow of speeding vehicles so I can understand the park rangers getting a little frustrated and appearing to be over-zealous. Feel free to come sit in the dog park with me as we watch the vehicles go by (on the other side of the fence) and perhaps you may change your perception of their seemingly "over-zealousness" as well.

By Teakwo23 |

Nice park to walk and watch nature. Trails are not really long enough for extended runs or bike trips. Just a nice, little, park.

By Susan B |

I've never been disappointed taking friends and family to John Chestnut Sr. Park. Where else can you go that you're almost guaranteed an alligator sighting when you have family going back to a snowstorm in Minnesota? Everyone I've taken to this park has thoroughly enjoyed their visit and the boardwalk through the park is amazing.

By George M |

Beautiful place to relax and leave all your worries and stress behind you. The open fields, the picnic areas, the shade trees, the lake, the walkways through the woods all add to the feeling of being an another place.

By Sandyloucita |

My family and I love John Chesnut Park. This shady park never disappoints. It has a playground with swings for the kids, a fenced in dog running area, picnic shelters, water access for boating on Tarpon Springs Lake, sandy volleyball area, large field for ball games or frisbee etc. it has a wonderful Boardwalk where you can enjoy the lake view or the deer and wild life year around. Excellent park to bicycle ride, walk or jog.

By rickbrennanrn |

Great park for picnics, kid's birthday parties, events. Lots of nature around. If you don't see a gator, you're not looking very hard. Decent boat launch, good parking but only goes into Lake Tarpon.

By ArtyBeachLady |

This is one of our favorite places in Pinellas County. Great for cycling, walking and viewing wildlife. There is one trail that leads you to a lookout tower to see a good view of Lake Tarpon. Plenty of restrooms, (a few are not open except weekends) a butterfly garden and many other paths to explore. We've spotted otters, a pileated woodpecker, and lots of other birds. Every time is a wonderful experience.

By Mommatoon |

Today was a little cooler than normal which made our hike a very pleasant one. When walking on the boardwalks you forget that you are in town and quickly get lost within the lush vegetation and wildlife that lurks around you. A young dear played "peak-a-boo" through the trees while squirrels and geckos played among the boardwalk rails. An alligator sun-bathing among the lily pads look on while we took some photos. If you are looking to work your fit-bit....this park can keep you walking! We will be back!

By Traveler2AM |

John Chesnut Park is a very nice place for families with children who live nearby. The boardwalk over the water is easy to walk and safe. There are areas that jut out where one can sit and look for wildlife. In a short time I was able to see turtles, ducks and various birds. Also, for the kids there is a nice playground with restroom facilities nearby. Entrance/Parking is free.

If one one want a nice walk, go to a larger one like Philippe Park in Safety Harbor.

By debhomepro |

I recently performed a Baptism at the park it was wonderful. Also perform incredible weddings there. So beautiful!

By ScottieMom849 |

Just had lunch again at John Chestnut. Took the large dog park which is divided for small and large dogs. There are several areas with upgraded playground equipment located near bathroom facilities. The area we were in had two covered shelters and several individual tables under the trees and near the lake. The playground had new soft-surface footing with heavy resin integrated slides, climbing and imaginative play area with swings set off to the side for clear swinging. A new walkway out over the water allowed us to find two alligators in the lake. Squirrels, birds and deer also entertained us while in the park. Shelters can be reserved by calling the county park division. Great FREE escape for family or individuals.

By Joy E |

I've been to this beautiful park on Tarpon Springs twice. The second visit we were captivated by the osprey, ducks and a woman feeding a Titmouse our of her hand. The we sat down to pray a game at the picnic table and were frightened by squirrels aggression. These animals are cute from a distance, but when they interrupt your snacking time, we began to see the reason for the rule "Do Not Feed the Animals." Some restrooms are only open on the weekend.

By joe s |

A great little shady, wooded park with covered picnic areas and a scenic pier that goes out into Tarpon lake. Bring your camera as the park is on the National Birding trail. You can also see new born alligators in the marsh abutting Tarpon Lake in Spring or just walk your dog. There is a fenced dog release area. I love to use the pier to photo the magnificent sunsets to the west. There are rest rooms and ample parking. There is no swimming but most of the park is heavily shaded and cooled by the lake so it is a refuge
from the hot Florida sun. Deer can be viewed at dusk and small game wildlife is abundant.

By Mark R |

Very nice Park and excellent boat launch facilities. Restrooms are available. Picnic area is available. Capacity to launch four motorized vessels at the same time. Great lake for jet ski fun or relaxing pontoon boat adventure. I have a jet ski and my friends have a pontoon boat. Awesome Park..

By DrCro |

Very nice lake with great boat ramp. Picnic areas are well kept. We enjoyed watching wildlife including deer that are in abundance. You can also see alligators

By jaybeeFL |

Start with I am a local resident who has visited this park numerous times over the last 20+years and had always been impressed with the cleanliness and upkeep of the grounds and structures. Took a spin through the park recently and was amazed at the poor upkeep---ponds and backwaters were entirely weed choked, most areas hadn't ben mowed in awhile, a number of trash bins were overflowing and generally the place was in need of some TLC. This park/nature preserve is a jewel and should be better kept.

By canoebase |

We're fortunate to live within walking distance of John Chesnut Park (and it's Chesnut, NOT "chestnut", like "chestnuts roasting on an open fire". The park is about 250 acres on the eastern shore of Lake Tarpon, and is truly a gem. Sure, there's playgrounds for the children, a very nice boat launch ramp for the nautical set, lots of group picnic areas than can be reserved online pus many individual picnic areas that are first-come, first served, two dog parks (one for big dogs, and one for the smaller canines), a large open field suitable for baseball, football, soccer or just "red rover, red rover", but there's also a few miles of walking trails that get you away from the people! As you'd expect, weekends are busy, but if you get there early on a weekday, you're likely to have the park to yourself (with the exception of the animals, of course) Unfortunately, many park visitors have chosen to disregard the signs that warn "DON'T FEED THE ANIMALS", and as result, the animals associate people with food and are are not at all shy about getting what they want, so keep a watchful eye on your little ones. Squirrels may seem cute, but they also can administer a very painful bite, and a 200 pound deer is nothing to argue with!

By Sheila A. K |

Relaxing day in a beautiful park with boat dock. We went with a church group for a cookout and used their nice pavilion and grill facilities.

By Darrell H |

I've been to this park many times. It has a really nice layout. The park has playgrounds, a beach, picnic areas, boardwalks and abundant space. We usually take a blanket and picnic on the ground near one of the ponds or canals. It is easy to find a private spot under the abundant shade trees without being on top of other people. Plenty of open space to throw balls or frisbees without getting near other people.

By Cambridgeco |

Amazingly beautiful park. Great walking trails. Loaded with birds and other wildlife. Quiet, clean. Great place for a picnic. The best park in the area.

By LVETOTRAVEL |

Nice place to walk around and see some local Florida wildlife and nature. Great spot to visit early in the morning before it gets too humid, but very nice scenery.

By Mary F |

There is so much to do at this park. Playground for the kids, baseball field. Boat dock for those who want to launch their boats. Picnic areas can even view deer if you are lucky! There is a wonderful boardwalk as well to view nature at it's best.

Nice park. Good size and lots of space to explore, walk, jog, and ride a bike. Family friendly with 2 playgrounds for kids and a sand volleyball.

By Kathryn C |

John Chestnut Park is a beautiful park. It has plenty of things to do within the park. You can swim in Lake Tarpon, hike through the trails, play baseball, or play on swings, slides, etc for smaller children. My niece had her birthday party there and all the kids had a great time.

By Lin D |

We just moved here and were looking for something new outdoors to do, this park is less than 2 miles from our new house and we read on Tripadvisor that they have agreat dog park. They DO, large dog side and small dog side, both fenced in and perefct for letting your babies run free. The ramp was being worked on so we did not get to see the whole park, will be going back for sure. Oh, their playground was very nice as well, shaded by the large trees, deer in the woods, and whatg looked liek hiking / biking trails.

By 22000FT |

We visited John Chestnut Sr Park on a cold day in December. The boardwalk trail is an excellent way of experiencing local ecosystems. We saw deer, birds and other small animals on the trail. Although dogs are not allowed on boardwalk we encountered several on our visit which we did not mind. Surprisingly there were very few visitors so the place is still undiscovered!
