Very spiritual place. Beautiful. sacred grounds. Don't need to be Hindu to experience and appreciate the monastery

By Barbara K |

This is a beautiful place to visit. It's possible to just walk around, you just can't enter the temple unless you're going in to worship. Open to the public after 10:45 am, but be sure to read the website for the particulars so you can be respectful. It is lovely!

By WolfzoneMagic |

I have only ONE thing to say - GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can keep your ziplines and tourist trap attractions - the Monastery is NOT to be missed. Please be respectful in attire, and give a donation. It's fascinating and simply remarkable. We will never, ever forget it.

By ThePuba |

Due to construction constraints, visitors no longer have close up access to the new and most impressive temple itself for another 6-12 months. This is most disappointing for those of us that previously treasured this tour. The grounds of course are lovely and the small active temple is still accessible.

By sunnluvr |

Really a beautiful, serene place in the hills above Kapaa, on Kauai. I've been to Kauai many times but this was my first visit the Temple but won't be my last. Their visiting hours vary so check before you go up, but really a lovely place to spend an hour or so.

By beth ann k |

We had a reservation so we actually went in the temple. It was fascinating to watch everything and the grounds are lovely.

By KGreg2015 |

Definitely reserve a time to enter the main temple for quiet reflection and meditation. The grounds are beautiful. A wonderful way to wrap up our visit on Kauai.

By Marybart |

This is a don't miss power place on Kauai, the views, the vibe, the spectacular setting will have you immersed in a world that is astoundingly accessible to us.

There is a ceremony at 10:30AM and it's open every morning every day 9 to 12 noon. Check it out. And give your self more time than you think you need, don't rush through it. It might turn out to be the best thing you have see on Kauai.

Extremely paisible place. Every one who visit Kauai have to come here.
At the same time you can come here only if you have chance.
Place to be in Kauai

By Devine242 |

I enjoyed the worship very much. You need few hours to spend to see the temple. The devotees are very friendly and knowledgeable about the temple.

By TropicalFocus |

Meditation in their banyan tree and visiting their spiritual forest with its bamboo archway were worth visiting. Pictures of the temple weren't allowed however we were able to walk up to and look inside after removing our shoes and socks.

By Biana M |

My husband and I were in awe of the Banyan trees and the beautiful energy at Kauai's Hindu Monastery. Can't wait to return and take another stroll through the Rudraksha Forest!

By pinklady1998 |

My husband was kind enough to visit this monastery with me. It is not very big, visitors are limited to only certain parts but the property has some beautiful sites. The banyan trees and a view of a river. Go visit for a spiritual experience.

By Becky S |

If you want to do something different, visit this temple and monastery. It's off the beaten track but worth a visit. Reservations are required for the guided tour and we'd recommend doing this.

By DonSue M |

Went on a quiet Sunday morning, a beautiful setting, peaceful and opportunity for (non-denominational) reflection. Be respectful of the requests for modest clothing, entering temple without shoes. The surrounding grounds are lovely and the Hindu statues fascinating. The view overlooking Wailua River is stupendous.

By suaraorchids |

Aside from their requirements about shorts, short dresses, and tank tops, which require to wear a Sarong (provided at the front entrance), this was a spiritual awakening experience. We had Van there as our tour guide. Tours require reservations. I wish we had more time to visit.

By Kavipriya S |

Really a calm place to purify soul through chanting. Has a big collection of all plant & tree varieties. One of the biggest leaf i have ever seen, and flowers that smell chocolate.

By Michelle R |

You'll need a reservation for the tour, so make sure to plan in advance! The Hindu Monastery is gorgeous! I'd highly recommend it - bring the camera. They're building a huge temple and the story of the construction is amazing - so is the scale. It's not your typical Hawaii experience, but something to check out if you're looking for a different outing.

By Kanica K |

Cant beat the location of this Hindu Monastery and Temple. We reached right at 9am when they opened, saw the grounds and attended a puja for about 90 min. The aarti is a beautiful ceremony. We came here on the first day of our 1 week trip to Hawaii and made special plans to come to the monastery. The modest dressing was not a problem for us. Very diverse people which was good to see. Very relaxing.

By michelle b |

Gorgeous view over wailua river, beautiful grounds and temple; more lush flowers foliage if you can get special visit behind the rope which only happened in 2011 visit on my parents 50th wedding anniversary, had planned in advance, because this site is exactly where my parents had honeymoon before it became Monastery grounds so has a very special connection, the history, and the intention of the Hinduism philosophy are also, beautiful and inspirational

By robin h |

Took the 90 minute tour which was awesome our tour guide had a great sense of humor was a wealth of knowledge The second and New Temple which is not finished till 2017 we only could see from a distance is closed to the public looks beautiful but the venues were beautiful the great Banyan tree was magnificent and it all was very peaceful. I loved the view of the valley Was an awesome tour. You must really call ahead about the tour and parking is very limited the tour is only held on certain days according to the Hindu calendar Also a dress code is required

By lambda_by_mu |

We had a wonderful time visiting this not so popular location. The drive was phenomenal and then the place itself was so peaceful. it rained a lot. Much later we found out it is right by the wettest place on the planet!

By sabers86 |

It is off the main highway and has parking for maybe 30 cars or so. We started at their gift shop and bought some ball braclets that are suppose to keep your blood pressure down. We took a flyer on them. Wear long pants and a sleeve shirt or you will have to wear one of their saroungs. A monk gave a long session to your tour group so you will better understand of life in the monastery, Hindu religious beliefs. Once finished he takes you through the grounds, stops at intervals and each time. gives you more information. The scenery is beautiful with a few water falls along the flowing river. He then takes you to an area where they have monuments of several statues of workers that are building the new temple. At that point you are taken to a partial new temple which presently is scheduled to be finished by 2020 but since all parts etc. have to be made outside of Hawaii and then shipped to this final destination, the Monk lead you to believe it could be at least a few more years than that. The present temple is back near where the original session was held but you have to take your shoes off.to enter it. Also in touring the grounds there are a few ponds, statues, and beautiful banyan trees..

Walk the grounds of this peaceful sanctuary and feel the nature all around. Wonderful way to have a relaxing day and just take in all of the beauty.

By brotbacker1 |

Lovely and peaceful. Looking out from the grounds of the temple over the broken and beautiful natural landscaping below is one of the most memorable views I have experienced in 76 years. I am so glad I made this stop.

By veronicar |

Wonderful setting. Learned a lot about Hinduism in tropical setting. Best to book ahead of time for parking.

By Betty L |

We went purely to learn about Hinduism as an educational experience. We had a guided tour which was very informative. Call for times--the tours vary according to the Hindu calendar. I think a stroll around the grounds would not give you the informative experience we had. Some of the group members seemed to be very starry-eyed about the whole experience--talking about feeling "energy" from the place--but I found the nicest part was the very beautiful natural surroundings.

By Ichecku |

Its a Hindu monastery but its so peaceful that people of any faith can have a blissful moment there.
The temple is not run like Indian Hindu temples but the deities are the same.
The gardens behind the temple, the trees, the flowers, the mountains all make up a postcard like picture.
There is a small Rudraksha forest a little away from the monastery where you can pick rudraksha fallen on the ground. We we went there there were thousands of them on the forest floor. Beautiful monastery!

By Diana S |

The Hindu temple was beautiful and really soul searching. So calm and serene. I had a very good feeling when leaving.

If you are looking for an interesting experience on the island on Kauai, plan a visit to the Hindu Monastery on Kauai. Be sure to call and make a reservation for the guided tour that is held once a week. With the guided tour, one of the Hindu devotees serves as your guide provides information about the monastery and explains a bit about the Hindu religion. This place is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. Be sure to follow the dress code guidelines...no shorts or short dresses and be sure to cover your shoulders (men and women). We were lucky enough to see the Satguru Bodhi at the end of the tour. He even blessed my friend's beads that she bought for her kids! The tour is free but does accept donations.

Tucked away , in the middle of the jungle, just outside of Kapaa is a very special place.
We had been coming to Kauai for 20 years and NEVER knew it existed.
Built by hand the place has a magical vibe from the start. The location is outstanding. Views from the walking path , look like a fantasy Diorama . We happened to arrive during a service and we took off our shoes and stood quietly listening to the music and the chanting. Then a Monk, came out, with a small pot of sandalwood and showed us how to place a dot of it on our foreheads. Each of us were invited to partake and become part of the whole. It was wonderful.
There is a huge crystal on one of the paths and a meditation pool with Aum beautifully built into the tiles bottom.

My wife and I spent a few hours there, taking it all in, imagining what life is like for the monks. We spoke with the woman in the visitor center and she was very nice and very informative telling us the story of These monks and how it all came to be here in the jungle.
It was a wonderful experience all around and we left there renewed.
I highly recommend visiting this special place.

Absolutely wonderful place to visit in Kawaii even if you are not a Hindu or Shiv Bhagt!!
Amazing architecture friendly volunteers and absolutely will open your eyes to Hindu way of live and how you live in Harmony with nature even in modern day Kauai!!
While temple is still under construction one will be amazed at surrounding gardens !!
Likely you will return to meditate here !!
cannot wait to see the finished vision.

A place of quiet serenity. The Temple has been under construction since 1992. It is also osteoporosis complete. Gardens are being added using e danger ed native plants.
Upon e tearing there is a short I traction design riding the Hindu du region
And then a guided tour. Tours are on Wednesdays from 9 to 12.

By Bikram Das |

Beautiful grounds, and lot of literature on the sect of Hinduism which the temple monks belong to, very helpful volunteers, the temple is nice, brings you closer to The Almighty. The new temple is being built behind parts of which could be seen. The public is welcome each day from 9 am.

By Sue M |

We had a guided tour by a Hindu devotee. He was passionate and knowledgable. He gave an interesting and informative tour.
Temple structure itself is beautiful and amazing. Incredible story of how it is still all being built by hand some 40 years later.

By Sylvia R |

This lovely, serene monastery is set on beautiful grounds that features a stunning banyan tree and the lovely Kadavul temple that is open to all. It is truly one of the most splendid places of worship I have seen in the US. We were delighted by the puja ritual so much that we came back the morning of our departure. Not to be missed.

By chimayred |

Closes to public at noon, so not much to see. A few tenths of mile up the road there is a status of Hartman, the monkey god and a meditation forest. May have been worth it. AS it was, worth a drive by. from other's pictures, worth a visit.

By arti297 |

Best place to visit in kauai our trip was so sucessful visiitng the temple few times And visiting the rudraksha forest never could have seen in out lives. What a blessings.
Great dedications of the monks and love for lord shiva. Absoluetly Divine and Blissful to visit. No entrance tickets no complusion of any sort of donation. Very very peaceful and in the banks of the river with so much of positive energy which you will feel it for sure.

By oooom |

Kauai is the only place outside of India where you can see this authentic method and style of temple construction. Reservations recommended

By cliftiki |

So quiet so peaceful
Were pants / long sleeves. #RespectYo
open 9-noon most days
Nice Puja
SLOW service in the gift shop ------>SLOW.

By Fitzsidu |

Arrived at for self-tour 9:15 on a non-guided tour day (phone ahead for guided tour sporadic times). Had to wait until 9:45 to enter since prayers were taking place. Removed shoes or certain pathways became off-limits. Wear clothing that is respectful i.e. no bare legs, ball caps etc. We visited gift shop and info center and found volunteer very accommodating and helpful. We also purchased souvenirs ranging from $-$$$ in price. When we entered the monastery proper we found the self tour to be quite abbreviated since we were not partaking in prayer or meditation. The site is beautiful and well maintained but takes 10-15 minutes to view due to limited access. One could find a place to sit and meditate but the mosquitos would be a distraction. Bring your favourite bug repellant. Do yourself a favour and arrange for the longer guided tour that will allow you more/better access to the grounds.

By Vinay Y |

This is a beautiful and very peaceful Hindu Monastery in Kauai. They have a beautiful temple and the grounds are very nice and beautiful statues all around. They allow photos to be taken except inside the temple. The priests are very nice. If you are wearing shorts, they will ask you to wear a sarong (covering) or come wearing pants or a long skirt. Worth a visit and doesn't take too long to see.

By poohgirlrt |

Have been going to visit Monastery for years. Beautiful and peace-filled. Years ago you could wander the grounds during your tour, they keep you more confined now. Love to see the monastery being constructed. Definitely worth checking it out!

By LoveToTravelSamson |

very stunning grounds, beautiful temple, gorgeous tropical plants, lovely road leading to the site. On your way, stop to see pretty waterfalls. Only open 2 days a week with reservations only. FREE!

By capemeezers |

This was a surprise as I wasn't expecting the very lovely grounds and temple. We were allowed to go in during a service, sit quietly and mediate. There is a nice little shop with interesting books, jewelry, incense, and carvings. Everyone there was so welcoming and kind.

By Terri R |

The grounds are beautiful and if you like Hindu art, you will love it. Shorts and tank tops are not allowed, but they have soft pareos that they let you use. You have to take off your shoes once you enter the main garden. Do not take pictures inside the monastery! I didn't notice the "no cameras" sign just outside the door and started taking pictures of the beautiful room. I was asked to stop taking pictures and to delete the ones I had taken. Out of respect, I complied. This place is absolutely beautiful and very tranquil. I would love to visit again.

By GlobetrotterDuo |

We didn't expect we would find a Hindu monastery on the island of Kauai. The location of this monastery is very pristine - there's a huge banyan tree and forests all around. Looks like a perfect setting for meditation. The monastery closes in the afternoon - plan accordingly if you want to go in.

By Rohini C |

Beautiful Hindu temple. Pristine surroundings promoting peace, tranquility and happiness. Very friendly staff and excellent information. No pressure. Worth seeing no matter what religion you follow

By Steven-and-Wen |

While religion does not have a role in our lives, we decided to visit this place based on the good reviews. We didn't attend the service, but we walked around the grounds, and enjoyed the serene beauty. They also provided a lot of educational exhibits/reading about their history and construction projects, which was surprisingly interesting/amusing. It seems that the place that the public has access to is just a tiny part of the many acres that they have. You can also visit their forest which grows Rudraksha beads, which is about 1/2 mile away from the main public entrance.

By tnbala |

We were in Kauai and visited the temple. It is in US but the way the morning Pooja was conducted which we were fortunate to participate, it was divine. Few aspects to note
1 temple open from 9 to 12 noon every day
2 special shiva Pooja is conducted as in Tamil Nadu between 9 & 10 45.
3 there are dress restrictions but not to worry, since a colourful dhoti is offered by temple so that devotees are not inconvenienced
4 there is a forest for Rudraksha and the shop in the temple sells reliable quality Rudraksha. The forest is very close by and not to be missed
Overall it was a divine visit to a place having very good vibrations.

By HomeOnKauai |

Definitely take the public tour, which is offered about once a week, starts at 9 am and lasts about 2 hours. But you have to plan ahead - parking is very limited so you need a reservation, and the tour is only offered about once a week. Call a month or two in advance to make sure you can get on a tour that works for your visit. The tour includes an interesting talk about the hindu faith, plus a guided walk around the temple and monastery grounds, which include beautiful river valley views. To find out when tours are schedued and reserve a parking space, call 888-735-1619. If you have an open, curious mind, you will enjoy this experience!

By drsunshine108 |

This monastery and temple are exquisite, from the finely manicured lawns to the collection of exotic plants the grounds are immaculate. The Temple is the largest hand carved stone temple in the western world. Perhaps even anywhere outside of India. With great attention to detail this refined and professional operation offers a pristine and authentic experience. The monks are also very gentle and super knowledgeable. They care for their cows, bees, and fruit trees attentively and with great devotion. To me this says it all!

By Padmanabhan I |

A blissful experience. Very courteous and understanding monks. I experience really bliss when I entered here. Check out the place and surroundings. We could see Rudraksha tree in their own forest.

By Grumpyswife925 |

So peaceful. I entered the meditation dome and it took only a few minutes to feel the relaxation and calm this whole area provides. Love the opportunity to buy crystals and other wonderful items from the unassuming gift shop. The chance to bring some of that feeling home was wonderful. Go early, they close to visitors at noon, but you can see everything in less than an hour. Also, be prepared to be discretely covered by bringing a versatile pashmina or sarong for bare shoulders and/or legs. They provide them if you don't have one.

By chipnfay |

Not my thing, but I will share a little. The grounds were fairly well maintained. You are asked to put on a wrap, men and women both. you stroll at your leisure.

By Jerri L |

Stopped with my husband while visiting the area (using Shaka Guide Kauai app). We arrived in the parking area at 11:40am realizing that visitors are welcome only until 12. We quickly put in our sarongs to cover bare skin (wearing shorts or tank tops) and walked to the prayer tree area, removed our shoes and went through the temple (no photos allowed if temple and shoes must be removed) - there is also a path outside the temple you can follow if you wish to leave your shoes on. We walked by the pool and saw in the distance the temple being built as well as land across the river. We did not stop in the gift shop (open to visitors until 12:30) because of the time.

By Shashank V |

A worker on the premises threatend me with a sharp tool and called me various racial slurs. When I reported this to a staff member (older Caucasian lady), she refused to acknowledge my experience and laughed off these allegations of racism. When I queried who else I could complain to, she did not answer and ran away.

We have been left traumatized and will not be returning.

By CaliforniaTravelma |

Short drive to reach this area. Beautiful garden and setting. Definitely liked this place. You are not intruding and was good to see an active place of worship. Wear something to cover your legs and shoulders. They do have wraps but may run out. Beautiful views too!

By PS1 |

The temple is located within a forested area and is surrounded by mountains. Quiet, luscious and serene.

By KauaiVacationTours_K |

I would recommend taking time to visit this Monastery. I had a very relaxing morning wandering the exceptionally well manicured gardens. Full of creativity, amazing flowers, plants & sculptures. It is a place you can easily get lost in the calm beauty. Seeing the the new Monastery being built is unreal. The carving, care & time put in is worth a visit to see with your own eyes.

By Lisaann321 |

Interesting stop. Beautiful grounds and the history behind the area is fascinating. You will be taken to a covered shelter for an introduction and question/answer session. Afterward, there is a nice tour and an opportunity to stop inside a Temple to worship or just quietly observe.

By Jignesh S |

A Spiritual place to mediate, to unwind and to relax.
We found a monk in the forest of Rudraksha and chatted
with him on history of Monastery.
To pray and worship in the temple of Monastery take a reservation at least
two weeks before the visit.

By Deborah D |

A highlight of our stay on Kauai! This Monastery was simply beautiful and peaceful.
A MUST for anyone who desires to be circumspect with religions, and who can see the beauty that connects us all.

Take the free tour. Shut off your phone. Enjoy nature.

By Laura H |

This place is paradise on earth. We went 4 times in a week! It not only an architectural wonder but the grounds are gorgeous! We were able to take a tour of the temple it’s a must see!

By Songdoc |

I've previously seen the incredible new temple that is being constructed. It has not been accessible for about a year due to be surrounded by heavy landscaping equipment. The main reason to take the guided tour (unless you want to learn about Hinduism) is to see the new temple. They are hoping to re-open access to the temple soon. Until it opens you can do a self-guided tour and see the same sights on your own (no reservation needed) 9 am - noon. (Not sure if that's 7 days a week. Check the website.) The grounds and views are magnificent. We also visited the beautiful temple that remains open. It's near the trailhead for the Kuilau Trail (which I LOVE) and we combined the two activities.

By BoomerGal1955 |

The welcome talk was interesting and it was fun to learn a bit about the Hindu faith. We walked to the new temple and wow! All hand carved and absolutely fabulous. We will visit again when it's finished. We entered the temple and meditated in front of the "crystal" then finished our visit at the gift shop. Beautiful views and a calming energy.

By Steven858 |

Wednesdays they hold a tour of the grounds, call ahead for a parking spot. Bring insect repellent! The tour includes a history of this temple and Western Hinduism, a tour of the nearly completed hand carved temple, and many of the gardens.

By thenormaltraveler |

It’s simply a beautiful. I was amazed that in the middle of Kauai mountains there is this unreal Hindu monastery. Honestly .. it does not matter what your religious belief or affiliation is, you must take the time to go visit this place for even 30min.

Best times between 9 and 10:45 when they do the “aarti”. Then spend time in the gardens and banyan tree (for meditation).

It’s closer to Lihue (airport) so if you staying north shore then recommend visiting either on your way in or to the airport. Plan for a bit of a drive away from the main highway!

Enjoy!

By Karen N |

This was a fun stop in the morning while we were exploring the island. You need to get there before 12:00 and either wear modest shirt (with sleeves) and pants or skirt or you can borrow a cover-up from the temple. The gardens are very pretty and the temple itself is ornate and beautiful. The grounds have areas with signs to educate you on what you are seeing and what you can and can not do in that area ( ie wear shoes...etc). The gift shop is interesting and worth a look.

By 125Charlie4 |

We visited this beautiful serene temple and I was blown away by the serene , natural and calm environment . If you are visiting you must visit between 9-12am after that the site is closed. As you enter the grounds there is a hut which provides a sarong to cover up . We walked up the path into the temple where prayers were going on . The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Ganesh .The energy is so peaceful . We then walked around to where the new temple is being built and the scenery is like coming out of some Indiana Jones movie - a hidden waterfall and a majestic temple one one side - I was so overwhelmed by the beauty and spiritual site and was so grateful to be there. We didn’t have enough time to just stay and look at this site so moved to the path where there where huge banyan trees . Perfect place to meditate if I had time ! The shop and library is very informative selling precious Rudraksha Beads from the neighbouring forest . To end the trip we went to the forest to pick up some Rudraksha. I feel so blessed and lucky to come to this site and sincerely hope all travellers will make time to visit and experience this site - This has got be a Must !!

A group of friends spending time on Kauai came across this opportunity to visit a Buddhist temple. The grounds are manicured and beautiful, the history is very interesting, and the temple is amazing. I would highly recommend a visit to this temple!

By Bruce C |

The monastery is a stunningly beautiful place. The gardens, grounds and streams are simply spectacular as is the granite temple that they have been working on since the 1990's. The guided tour is well worthwhile and the guide we had patiently answered all questions and was very informative. It was a place that among other things promoted values such as peace, joy and acceptance if diversity, all good things in today's world. If interested in the guided tour, you will need to phone the monastery as times change according to phases of the moon.

By HarlanFisherIV |

I've been numerous times to this beautiful place, when friends visit from the mainland, always take them there. They have a guided tour once a week, you need to call for a reservation if you decide to go because of limited parking space. Otherwise, you can go there anytime without a reservation and cruise the grounds, but you won't get back to the temple which is being built unless you are with the guided tour. There is a dress code, best to google this activity to understand when they open, when the service is, and how to get there. It's free, there's a nice gift store if you want to make a purchase, a donation is warranted, but not required.

By Craig W |

A quiet spiritual space. Not being Hindi, I did not understand the significance of the symbols, but there were well documented write ups of their beliefs. And good comparisons between different religions. I left with a better understanding of the Hindu religion and how it compared to other major religions of the world.

By toddd530 |

I was in the area, saw this monastery on my Maps app and thought...well, why not? I arrived just before 9am, just in time for the beginning of their morning ceremony in the first Hindu temple. I took off my shoes, grabbed a cushion, and sat with a few other visitors for nearly an hour watching and listening to the offerings being made. It was so quiet, peaceful and calming. This is not at all the kind of thing I normally do, so it was all new to me, but I loved the experience.

By Sandy533 |

We really didn't know what to expect at the Monastery. We just took a chance and stopped there. We were met, by accident, in the parking lot by a member of the Monastery. We were shown around the grounds and even participated in the ceremony. The grounds were peaceful, lush and beautiful. The Monastery itself was very peaceful and calm.

By Analise83 |

I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to fit this in since I was staying on the north shore of the island and they have a pretty limited time period during the day when the public is welcome to enter (totally understandable but does require pre-planning, you can't just drop in whenever).

The grounds are beautiful and obviously well cared for. The people were all very nice and helpful and the whole area had a very meditative vibe to it. Kind of sad we couldn't see the temple under construction close up but it is at least visible from one point of the grounds and there's another spot where they have displays explaining how the temple is being constructed.

Most of the pictures I took that day I took at the monastery.

Things to note:

They ask you wear "modest" clothing. No shorts, tank tops, etc. They do provide sarong-type wraps at the front before you enter that you can use to cover up and just return when you leave.

While you can walk around the grounds in general with your shoes on, if you approach the temple currently in use, you need to remove your shoes and go barefoot.

You cannot take pictures of the interior of the temple (even if you're standing outside the door).

Admission is free but they do accept donations. I thought the experience was definitely worth putting money in the donation box.

The driveway is dirt and when I went was rutted and pitted so if you're driving in a car low to the ground you'll want to take care (I was in a Jeep).

By wingboyOR |

We had a great visit to the monastery. The folks were very friendly, and answered question after question. The grounds are beautiful. We came away with a better understanding of Hinduism.

By Cathy G |

This small monastery is a very serene place. We have never been able to take the guided tour which is only given on certain days. Go after their services so you can enter the temple. Long pants are needed or you will be expected to wear a sarong...men and women. Visit the Rudraksha Forest only a one-minute drive from the monastery on Kuamo'o Road. It is the only one in the Western world.

By Eva H |

You are on your own to feel the peaceful atmosphere a d wander the grounds. There is no guide. Good place to meditate and relax.

By 無名 |

...had me trippin - too beautiful. The view of the stream and monastery in the back is beyond description; I wouldn't argue with being the best place to look at on the island, and that is saying something. Peaceful place with some awesome Hindu statues, especially the one in the banyan tree. You got to come to this place and see it to believe it.

By Healthyiscool |

I have watched this monastery go up and each year I am delighted to see more beautiful craftsmanship. The property is a botanical heaven. I LOVE this place

By zeppo33 |

I visit this monastery every time I'm in Kauai. It is a peaceful sanctuary where you can do a lovely ritual: they have an area for burning pieces of paper for things you want to release in your life. A peaceful ritual that is so Kauai-an. Be sure to walk around the grounds - the trees are beyond amazing. Check hours, as it is a working monastery.

By DavidWMcCulloch |

I visited with my two boys (aged 4 and 6) on a very rainy day and we thoroughly enjoyed our 45-minute visit. The grounds of the monastery are beautiful, especially the overlook of the Wailua river below. While my boys weren't quite old enough to understand the Hindu religion, they enjoyed covering their legs with a sarong (required to entire the grounds), and were impressed by the huge Banyan tree that serves as a sort of temple / meditation area. We attended after 10.45am, so were also able to enter the main temple itself, which is beautifully adorned with golden statues and decorative hangings in the Hinda style. My youngest was a little overwhelmed by the solemnity of the temple but my eldest enjoyed looking around at the statues of Ganesha and other gods. The overlook of the new temple being constructed on the grounds was also very impressive, and there's a mounted telescope for taller kids to peer through. The guides were very kind to my boys. The welcome center / gift store is full of interesting Hindu items, and I would recommend taking a look.

By Sri V |

Very serene, quiet place surrounded by plants, tress and very neatly maintained. The whole experience was very divine. Walk through the rudraksha forest was amazing. The walk to see the new temple being built is very nice. The priests are very devoted.

By Gopi |

Even before reaching Kauai, a visit to this divine place was on our agenda. The temple is just in a fantastic location, very serene and divine. The pooja we attended on Saturday, conducted by a white priest, was in no way less than any of the best temples from South India. Hailing from Tamilnadu, I can very much vouch for the rituals. The temple is so clean, very serene and a good place for meditation. The surroundings are breath taking. Though we could not visit Iraivan Temple, which is under construction (which is likely to be inaugurated by 2022), got a chance to inter act with the sculptors who have been specially imported from Karaikudi, South Tamil Nadu & understand the dedication with which it is being built. A must visit place in Kauai.

I love visiting the monastery. I had the opportunity to be a part of the meditation and be blessed by a monk. The grounds are so beautiful and serene. I can't say enough about the beauty and the quiet. An amazing experience

By rickft |

If you are Hindu, this place is probably worth visiting. Otherwise, I don't see the point. Nothing in particular to learn about the religion or culture. Certainly nothing about the history of Kauai. Frankly, it looks more like a re-purposed resort than a religious site. There is a small waterfall that can be seen from the temple, and a very old transplanted banyon tree that is big. It's free and you don't have to take any more time than you want, so if I were driving past I might stop and see it but it's not worth going out of your way.

By Olym2010 |

We went here on a rainy day to see the actual temple only to find that you cannot go anywhere near the new one. We saw the old one and it was interesting. The bronze sculptures and the story of how the temple is being made was the best part of the visit.

Mandir in its true sense, where mind stops and heart feels peace. A true gem in the lap of Mother Nature, wish you all the leaders and organizers best in finishing remaining work to complete the beautiful marvel.

Access to the new temple (that is still under construction) is not currently available. They are hoping to open it soon, but call first. I've been there when it is open and it's FANTASTIC!!! I enjoyed the tour even without being able to go to the temple.

By FlickandTony |

We went to the Hindu Monastery and loved the place and the information provided. The tour is not trying to convert or gather followers at all. The grounds are beautiful and the history of the place and the temple being built are really worth the trip. You will need a car to get there or a taxi.Only open for a tour one day a week.

By Jkwusa |

A calming re-intro to Hindu faith in a heaven-on-earth setting. Intro presentation was a bit long and unfocused, given the heat and humidity. Depends on the presenter I'm sure. But the power of this most ancient of faiths is un-deniable and it's an experience you won't forget.

Then you can do like we did and downshift to modern non vegetarian vice-filled living - hit the Kapaa food trucks on the way back to the beach.

Beautiful little monastery in the mountains of Kauai. We went to the puja (prayers) at 9 am. They welcome all and the site is open to visitors from 9 am until 12 noon. The temple is inviting and the experience wonderful. One of the best things we did on the island. Beautiful banyan tree and scenic over looks. The are building a full Hindu temple overlooking a small waterfall on top of the cliff. Fantastic mountains in the background.

By MURPect |

Go back in time and take it the breathtaking views and buildings. Also very interesting history of the earliest publishing on the Island.
Spiritually rewarding.

By tedact |

This particular stop is listed under a couple other titles. Be sure to check the website as they are only open for public tours once a week. It is a very beautiful stop with incredible guides. We were part of a large group. That was unfortunate, as many people do not respect the fact that this is in monastery.

By itzmevm |

We were so glad that we were able to visit this temple on our wedding anniversary during our recent trip to Kauai. The temple was so peaceful and beautiful.

By vrz |

We are catholic, but open minded. We had a reservation to go ck out this beautiful place for a couple months before we went to Kauai and so glad we made this a priority. The grounds are amazing and the vibe is so cool. The presentation is a bit long, but okay. The native Indian builders and SO sweet and loved the visitors. Ask for a piece of stone they are chiseling and bring back a piece of history!

A magical place and very inspiring. A special place where one can find solitude and experience peace.

Recommended by a local we met, beautiful area, very peaceful not too crowded. Look at the dress code before you go.

I really enjoyed the Hindu Temple in Kapaa. The grounds are spectacularly beautiful. The introduction about the temple was very interesting. There is a lot of walking, so beware of that. A truly beautiful place to visit.

By SreenV |

Completely spellbound by this place, most peaceful, beautiful with attention to detail. Never seen such vedic explanation of Indian Gods in this part of the the world. Truly must have experience if visiting Kauai, Hawaii.

By Richard j |

Definitely worth a slight side trip up into the mountains along the Wailua River to visit.

It has a truly special feeling, soothing and stunning in its simplicity.

Gorgeous grounds, beautiful setting and peaceful vibe.

By Doyle C |

I arrived at 8:50 am as their Web site said the gates open at 9am. I had never attended a meditation service before. I was expecting a very quiet setting inside of the temple during the service but in fact the chanting, bell ringing and drumming were quite loud. The monetary property is apparently over 300 acres but the area accessible during the regular service was only about 10 acres. The visit is definately not for everyone but if you enjoy learning about various cultures and religions you will appreciate the visit. I'd recommend reading their Web site before visiting.

By SASshipmateS87 |

I had different expectation for this site. We visited a beautiful Buddhist Temple on Oahu & this site was rated high on TripAdvisor's activity list for Kauai, so I was expecting much more.
We were not certain if we had arrived to the right facility even though our GPS was guiding us. It is a modest entrance located at the end of a residential street. Sarongs are available at the entrance. There is a beautifully carved sculpture of Ganesh at the entrance to the grounds and another large deity in an exquisite tree garden. The building is made of exotic stone blocks and features a large carved bull at the entrance. The interior is adorned with gold deity statues placed on shelves along the wall. Photos are not permitted inside the temple, but the grounds provide excellent photograph opportunities.
I am glad we visited this site as it provided a glimpse to a religion that our family does not see often. This facility exudes tranquility and harmony with nature. It was a very peaceful and beautiful place. It is a wonderful spot for avid photographers seeking a different type of subject matter than what is typically found in Hawaii. However, it is not impressively large or educational. I fear my expectations were set too high for this visit and impacted my impression. Set your expectations low and you will be pleased.

This Monastery was an amazing visit!! The property that it sits on is one of the most beautiful places on Kauai. Beautiful ceremony was taking place while we were there. The huge meditation Banyan tree is amazing. Please be respectful of their dress code if you visit.

By Vacationer2Maine |

We had heard of this monastery from our audio guide and were eager to visit. We knew we had to be dressed appropriately (no shorts, no shoes, covered up) and came prepared. There was a good group of other interested visitors but it was not too crowded. There was a sign asking for no photos but it was confusing as to what that applied to, as several folks had their cameras out, taking pictures of the beautiful view. (So yes, I took a few too - but I did NOT photo anyone or photo the temple itself). We were invited into the temple to sit quietly and that was a very peaceful twenty minutes of time spent being quiet with others. I would recommend this if not just to see how others believe and live.

Go to the Kauai Hindu Monastery website to read about their tour. Most of the grounds are not open to the public with the exception of a morning tour done once a week. All you need to do is call and make a parking reservation. The tour is 2-3 hours.

After a lecture on the origins of Hinduism and the Kauai Monastery, the guide takes you through the grounds past the current temple and out to the new temple (about a quarter mile further beyond). Take rain gear as it does rain a lot since you are at the base of the volcano Waialeale (second rainiest spot on earth with over 450 inches of rain per year).

Great insight to a religion that most people in this area of the world are not familiar with. Amazing story of how the new temple is being built and all the work and dedication it's taken to make it a reality.

By drsunshine108 |

The monks at the KHM are genuine angels. They are kind and compassionate and super knowledgeable. The grounds are immaculate and the new temple a masterpiece. It is actually the largest (and only) hand carved stone Hindu Temple in the western world. They even hand carved the boulders from the mountain side in India. Inspiring and awesome. A must see!

By Maegan T |

Every time we visit we make a stop at this beautiful location. We went to a service this time and it was great taking, you will leave wanting to be a better person than when you walked in.

So i have visted Kauai oh six or so times but we never seemed to make it here. Well this trip ws all about the things we never did, glad we are. This place is tucked back into a neighborhood in Wailua but then you park and bam it is like you have been transported to somewhere else, the area you can visit is small but extremely beutiful. You can go into the temple and worship if you like, just dress modestly. There are no " faith police" you do not have to be Hindu. They have a great exhibit expliaining the differnces in religions and about Hinduism. We have visited other tmeples in Singapore in point of fact this one is much better for that reason and because the people there are so welcoming. Yes do go no matter your faith, namaste!.

By RamblingRoses |

The Hindu Monastery graciously allows access to a portion of its grounds M - F from 9 - noon. You can treat this as an opportunity to learn about the religion, or simply as a stroll through a beautiful garden. They have sarongs available at the entrance to cover yourself if you are wearing shorts.

By Starrseeded123 |

So beautiful and peaceful and quiet. The monks are gracious and very helpful with the history of the whole place

By Baggs909 |

I absolutely love this place. I have been there many times and I never get tired of the place. The beautiful view and the meditation areas are beautiful. It’s so peaceful. My favorite part is where you can write your worries down and burn it. Releasing your worries to the universe. What a lovely way to start your day!

By ElinyaT |

A Hindu Monastery located in a Hawaiian jungle paradise. Its situation high on a hilltop means that you can look out across the valley to stunning trees and a meandering water flow. The gardens are beautiful and the whole place gives a great vibe. Well worth a look unless you hate anything religious

By Lizmenzel |

A not to be missed spot, very peaceful and tranquil, the service and blessings were just lovely, the Siva Lingam crystal and it’s energy were amazing. Gift shop great too.

By Lydia G |

This is an authentic Hindu monastery offering guests the opportunity to experience the beauty of the grounds and puja (Sanskrit ritual), if you choose. You must make a reservation mostly because of limited parking. You can attend the puja or take the tour. You can't do both at the same visit. I went twice: once for the puja which was extraordinary and the second visit for the tour, which included a stroll through the grounds to the Iraivan Temple, currently under construction. Architecturally magnificent and spiritually profound! They have a very nice gift shop with books, sculptures and various other treasures. There are no eating facilities on the grounds, but you're close to the town of Kapaa for lunch afterward. Bring a rain jacket or umbrella and enjoy the beauty and hospitality of this one of a kind place on earth!

By Kevin H |

Very relaxing visit. Wonderful park like setting. Lots of birds and some great carvings. Active Hindu ceremonies and some great conversation with some monks. It was well worth the time whether one is Hindu or no. I am not and loved it there.

By paul60ii |

Rained 14 inches the day we visited but it was still a beautiful serene place. The banyan tree area even shielded us from the rain. The river was extremely swollen with water and trees.

By kamakshi2015 |

This monastery is a unique experience for most who come here . The entire area is vibrant with the divinity and the devotees who come here are treated with a feeling of caring welcome ! Walking around in the serene and peaceful premises is an unforgettable experience . Must visit .

By mms732 |

An amazing secret hidden away on beautiful grounds. Not to be missed.
Take note of the hours for visiting and look carefully for the road that leads to the monastery. Remember this is a religious site. If you arrive in shorts (men & women) & bare arms you will be provided a cover up sarong etc. There is a one hour tour that is not required. Otherwise you can wander in a peaceful environment. Carvings on a new temple that is being constructed are marvelous.

By Liz G |

I had intended to do the guided tour since I definitely wanted to go inside the temple and see the 700 pound crystal but didn't make it in time. So I decided to do a self guided tour between 10:45 am and noon. So glad I did! The grounds are beautiful and they have story boards, statues and plaques to describe how the stones are carved, Hinduism, etc. it was unclear in the guidebook but I was happy that I got to go inside the temple, meditate and see the crystal. Overall a lively way to spend a few hours.

By sndovale |

Beautiful grounds and interesting information about the site and the religion. Take the time to see it and learn something new.

By Marybart |

Don't miss this place, it is a serene sanctuary on Kauai, it's almost like being in India but a lot quieter. It's open every day 9AM to 12 noon, Women must have their legs and shoulders covered so no sun dresses. The temple is lovely and you'll leave with a meditative feeling of being blessed.

By Cytra K |

This is an extremely beautiful and peaceful place. I definitely recommend arriving after 10:30 (after the worship ceremony ends) so you can see the temple and take in the breathtaking view of a waterfall surrounding by a lush valley.

By 12345777 |

Very refreshing and quit place. All the place surrounded by greenary and with different varieties of flowers.

By Kevin S |

Be sure to get there well before noon. It's a wonderful place for mediation. Be respectful and wear a proper shirt and pants or borrow one of their sarongs.

By JeanneandDavid P |

spent a happy 2 hours here on a friday morning - need to arrive after 10:45 and leave by noon as this is a real monastery and only certain hours are set aside for guests - it is exotic and beautiful , and volunteers and monks most welcoming - excellent signage to explain the history of the monastery and tenants of their beliefs.....

By Deepjan |

Visited the monastery and temple twice during our visit to Kauai. I'm so glad we experienced this gem. Truly spectacular. Very clam and peaceful place. Loved the Shanmuka Swamy idol under the banyan tree. If you have time it's a great place to meditate and immerse in the nature. No one asked us for donations while we were there. Parking is free and very easy to find.

By Renee H |

We attended the Temple Darshan service, which was a special, unique experience. The grounds are beautiful. Make sure to see the amazing banyan tree.

By Jan Weinfurt |

One of my strongest and very intimate visit in Hawaii. The place has a spirit. If it tells you something - like me - enjoy it, as long as this place keeps it's spiritual strength.

By Palani N |

Very peaceful place in earth, the new Temple is under construction and it is going to finish in 2022

By thebucketllister |

THere are sarongs to wear if you are not dressed properly and will be asked to remove shoes during prayer areas. Beautiful place to embrace another form of religion.

By Jan P. Š |

Its very nice place, great garden with trees and flover, small ponds....but its it doesnt THAT mood like in real hindu temples in India.... but its woth in not sunny days. Very limited open hours !! Only from 9 to 12.

By Prem K |

The Hindu monastery, with its tranquil setting, is truly a remarkable place. The serene surroundings, lush green landscapes, and an atmosphere conducive to meditation make it an extraordinary retreat for spiritual seekers. The monastery's peaceful ambiance enhances the experience, offering a serene escape into a world of tranquility and reflection.

By Laura B |

unreal so very beautiful!!!! The feeling that I had while being there was amazing!! just breathtaking!

By NJCricketer |

Have been following developments at the temple since the early 2000s. It must be a real challenge to build things, getting the material all the way from India and the devotees are hard working as well. Yet, this seems like an endless project and it is difficult to see it completed in someone's lifetime - something one would like and is used to seeing at other places. But one has to accept it for what it is and the progress that is being made. Lovely place - worth visiting and getting to know the culture and supporting the place thru donations.

By sndovale |

Beautiful place. Take the free tour and learn about the religion. Make a donation. Enjoy your time in this peaceful location.

By rajasrinivasm |

Though not religious, we went there to take a look at the ambience. Surreal experience with large trees, streams and a small water fall.

By Sue K |

Wonderful find and beautiful drive to get here north of Wailua/Kapaa. Beautiful grounds with natural and manmade water features. Interesting background given regarding the Hindu religion. Funky off the beaten path experience

By Crescendo01 |

This is by far the most beautiful and unique place I have ever meditated. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity. Even if you are not familiar with Hinduism, you will appreciate the beauty of this place. The view of the river is worth the trip on its own!

Please make sure you dress appropriately- if you don’t have long pants or long sleeves, you can borrow sarongs at the front. You should also use bug spray if you can. It rains every day here and there are lots of lush plants, which results in mosquitos.

Visit the gift shop/library to learn more about what you are seeing. If you have any questions, just ask! Everyone there is very friendly.

By jayneCO |

we enjoyed our visit and the views are great. wear clothing that covers your legs and arms (respect and for mosquitos). Its a peaceful place.

By Sandra R |

We were disappointed that we could not walk down by the Hindu temple that is under construction still. The path leading down to the temple had been reseeded with grass but it had not done well so they were not allowing anyone down to it. There was not a good view that was anywhere close to it.

By JaneMcKJane |

This Hindu Monastery is off the beaten path, so driving there is an opportunity to see parts of Kauai that many don't see. The Temple is pretty and very peaceful. There is an awesome banyan tree there inside which people sit, contemplate, pray and/or meditate.

By CSTMaryland |

Three people told me about this place - I am so glad I went. Please come prepared to be conservatively dressed. No taking pictures on temple grounds. You can participate in the puja ceremonies. The meditation banyon is breath taking as well as all of the views of the forests. Truly divine.

By Mahesh K |

Beautiful and serene place. Had wonderful time. South Indian architecture. Peaceful.
Don't forget to visit Rudraksha garden.

By Anita |

Spectacular. The new temple is being built because of a swami's vision seeing Lord Shiva in 1969. Very peaceful and spiritual.

By Parag S |

Overwhelmed with emotions upon seeing the beauty of this Hindu monastery in Kauai. Beautiful outdoor monastery and new temple being built near Wailua River Falls. Statues and grounds are amazing. What a great find on the island of Kauai! Monks came here in 1968 and their story is awe-inspiring.

By Brian W |

Take an umbrella! It rained on us the whole time we were there. The tour is only available one day a week and you need to call and reserve a spot (for parking only, not number of people in the party). They prefer that women dress modestly and men wear pants. One thing that I found out that I didn't read anywhere else online is that they provide saris so if you didn't pack anything that fits the dress code, you can wrap yourself in one.

I found the tour very informative. The temple was still under construction when we visited and they would not allow us to walk down to it. When it is finished it is going to be a sight to behold.

By Linda K |

After more than 10 previous visits to Kauai, I thought that I had seen it all. But, thanks to Trip Advisor I found a place of beauty, peace and tranquillity that I had never heard of before. I am tempted to keep it to myself to avoid having it overrun by too many others. This Monastery is situated on a most scenic spot overlooking the Wailua River. There is a hand carved Temple of granite with an area with bronze statues depicting the laborious process. There is puja worship in the temple. When we were there at 11:30 a.m. a monk was walking through the Temple, ringing a bell and holding incense apparently blessing objects. He placed fresh flowers at the chest of a 16 ton black granite Nandi Bull statue. The grounds are beautifully maintained with lush flowers in abundance. It was like being in place an actual place of the inner tranquility that I am always trying to find in my meditation.

By Endless_Adventurers |

A must see hidden gem of Kauai! Check for hours and times of tours before going up there. Car pool whenever possible beacuse it can be very busy with limited parking. Amazing place even if your not religious, amazing gift shop too!

By arunraja |

Very peaceful, tranquil and scenic location for a Hindu temple. It is a simple place of worship amidst some very scenic landscapes. It was difficult to find the temple as there are no road signs. It is a Shiva Temple. It is open from 9 AM to 13:00 everyday.

By TimeMarchezOn |

Due to limited parking, you must call well in advance if you need to park a car there for their weekly tour. If you take a car service and don't park, you can join the tour without advance notice. The tour was a worthwhile experience although they do tend to spend a lot of time talking about the books they have for sale. It's a beautiful grounds with many various types of trees and flowers. There are also spectacular views of a small waterfall and pool. It's a very unique experience.

By heuster3 |

We arrived too late to go inside. So we just took pictures of the exterior grounds. It is very peaceful up there. But the one thing that I really liked was the burning of your problems in the granite cauldron. I only burned one...lol! They also have sarongs for those who are wearing shorts which are not allowed in the temple.

Just a little down the road is the Sacred Forest which is adjacent to the monastery grounds. We wouldn't have known about it if it wasn't for this couple who told us about it. Very peaceful

Both places are definitely worth visiting for a spiritual journey or out of curiosity.

By rutrippin |

You'll need to call ahead to book an appointment for the tour, since they are limited on parking spots. Be sure to wear long pants guys, otherwise you'll be wearing one of their serapes. The tour was really educational, and well delivered. The grounds are beautifully landscaped atop the mountain. This a working monastery, so it's important to be respectful, but at the same time, they want you to have fun, so talking and laughing is ok.
I would skip the gift shop, unless you feel like donating money.

By pholphak-k |

well worth the visit just for the sights.

The monastery was just beautiful & green. Attended the Puja, it was amazing. The energy was so calm & relaxing. Wonderful gift shop. Items were pricey though.

By Theresa B |

I don't know that I'd classify this as a must see but we did enjoy waking through the small-ish grounds. And it was on the way to other attractions so was good to do as part of a day out. They do have free sarongs to wear -- not allowed shorts. There is not cost but donations are welcomed. You can download the information brochure from their website.

By flwrgrdn |

The lush beauty of the gardens, the peaceful easy breathing atmosphere and the quiet contemplation made this a special visit for us. We loved the quietness and hushed walk through these gardens.

We especially appreciated the ceremony where you write down things you want to let go of, and then burn it in the rose colored urn. Such a sense of release and calm. We left mementos at the banyan tree of meditation. I've been before but my daughters and granddaughter had not. They experienced the same feeling of peacefulness I did when I visited previously a few years ago.

We had brought our own sarongs and we felt a part of this place as the hush and calm fills your soul.

By karaherber |

This was suggested to us after our kayak trip just around the corner from this little gem. It's a lushly gardened area that is peaceful and a cultural niche worth taking a quick look at.

By Coldvine |

It was very spiritual visiting the temple. A wonderful peace and tranquillity surrounds the area. It was a privilege to visit.

By nicekids |

We visited the Hindu Monastery on a friend's recommendation. This is a very serene place- built in beautiful surroundings. The highlight was visiting the small forest of 'Rudraksha' trees close-by. We saw these trees for the first time. We grew up in India and still never got a chance to see these trees there. The entire experience was amazing.

By vin_traveller |

I think as a hindu this one is a must visit temple! The temple performs pujas 24 X 7 X 365. Haven't seen any other temple that do it so religiously. It is has a serene setting in the island of Kauai. The temple has rudraksh tree that is rare. They are building a new temple which is really good. Must be open next year or so. The energy in this temple is something worth going for and experiencing. The gift shop is pretty good too. You would need a dhoti or cloth that can cover your legs in order to enter the temple (they provide it at the entrance to the temple). No shorts or pants allowed.

Yesterday March 11 2017 my wife and I who are on our Hawaii vacation trip and in Kauai visited this beautiful monastery and temple in beautiful Kauai.

Prior to our trip we had read about this place on Trip Advisor and heard about the many beautiful experiences vacationers and visitors have experienced while visiting this gorgeous place surrounded by lush mountains and streams and beautiful scenery.

We decided that we would also take the opportunity to visit this place of worship and tranquility.

As other reviewers have written we truly stumbled upon a hidden gem nestled amongst the mountains in beautiful unspoiled Kauai.

From our hotel the Sheraton in Poipu Beach its an easy 14 mile trek on a lovely highway and fairly easy to get to.

The actual address is 107 Kaholalele Rd, Kapaa Kauai HI. You can input this on your GPS and it will take you there without any issues.

Their phone number is 8887351619.

Nowadays they have provided for ample parking and signs are clearly posted to park. Its still limited but if you go early enough you will find parking at the nearby Temple Lane which is the recommended parking spot.

By car it took us about 35 mins or so in the morning and we were there by 9.15 am or so.

Please note that the temple is open everyday from 9 am - 12 noon.

To actually enter the temple property one has to be there at those times, otherwise the ornate gates are locked and you will be not allowed entry.

Our first stop was the Mini mela or gift shop where they have a good collection of souvenirs and books and literature for sale.

One does not necessarily have to visit this place but the attendant there was quite knowledgeable in the Hindu scriptures and items of worship like statues books etc.

It may be a good starting point to your visit though there are maps available with the suggested routes numbered from 1 to ... to see in order of appearance.

The gift shop is also a place to make donations which are subtly suggested.

All proceeds are to go towards the new temple they are constructing presently just across the current premises.

The salesperson in charge was pretty knowledgeable about the history of the temple and it was a good thing to engage in conversation.

As we had reached at an opportune time we were able to participate in a puja or religious ceremony conducted daily from 9 am- To 10.45 am.

This was a ritual of chants religious prayers to Lord Nataraja, Ganesh and Lord SIva inside the main ornate temple.

We were happy to see people of all faiths non-Hindus also participating in this ritual while giving it the seriousness it deserved by carefully observing the swami(priest) conducting his puja.

Soft religious music played in the background adding to the ambiance.

The temple itself is very beautifully constructed and very comfortable for a place of worship and one has a choice of sitting cross-legged on the carpeted floor with soft cushions provided, or for the physically handicapped or elderly folks who are unable to sit on the floor, plastic armchairs are provided for their convenience and comfort.

The temple has strict rules about the dress code. No shorts or t-shirts are allowed as are skirts.

If one does not know this sarongs (long cloths) are provided to cover oneself and only then is one allowed into the inner sanctums of the temple to see it or participate in the religious functions.

Apparently this custom is strictly adhered to as during our visit we saw many others in shorts skirts and t-shirts who had to drape these sarongs around themselves.

A nice touch to assist people who are not aware of this procedure and dress code though it is mentioned on their website.

Once inside there are ornate statues of the Hindu gods Shiva and Nataraja and beautiful carvings on the ceilings and walls.

It is an important thing to note that this temple houses the only "Shivling" (Lord Shiva) made out of crystal the only one of its kind in the world..

This is something to behold! But photographs inside the temple are strictly prohibited.

One experiences a serene peace of mind and calmness amongst lush green surroundings and the temple has been constructed very well with due regard for the physical comforts of mankind though I feel that in the prescence of the almighty one can forgo and give up some of the earthly comforts we enjoy elsewhere for a brief while during the day or during the the religious offerings being conducted daily.

But for the physically challenged they provide chairs to sit on to observe the proceedings or like other devotees one can sit cross-legged on the carpeted floor on comfy cushions provided.

Next to the temple is a bookstore and souvenir shop which is the only commercial aspect of this beautiful peaceful place.

There is a little pressure to donate and purchase items like statues of Lord Shiva and Ganesh.

All purchases go towards funding of the new temple premises near the current one which promises to be even better once it is completed. Access to the new temple is not allowed and is cordoned off.

So take it all in. Hawaii is truly a Heaven on Earth as a destination but this though of the beaten path and not on most folks holiday or vacation calendar its truly worth visiting, something different from the surf, sand and beaches Hawaii is known for

You will enjoy another beautiful hidden gem in Hawaii and truly feel blessed in the presence of the almighty.

I took many photos of the place whilst there of the exterior of the temple and lush surroundings but will have to provide them later as they yet have to be downloaded and processed from the camera.

This is absolutely one of my favorite stops. Check their website and call ahead. They do tours only once a week. It was a very informative tour, our group was an unusually large one which I think detracted from the tour. It is an absolutely breathtaking visit with beautiful picture taking opportunities.

By Ashleyyyyyhaha |

Tried to visit the temple but they were having mass until 1030 and could not. The outside grounds is beautiful tho and there is a waterfall lookout on the way up which made the drive more worth it

By Syounghatfield |

We greatly enjoyed our morning visit to this spectacular location. We arrived about 10:45, which was perfect for us. We are not Hindu, but have a great appreciation for the ceremony, music, tranquility found here. For worshipers, you should arrive by 9:30. Truly awe inspiring.

The temple tour was magical and we love how this place preserve plants and other, a must to visit

By Saffron |

Amazing monastery where you can experience spirituality among gorgeous and well-maintained grounds. The Banyan tree is spectacular!

By Cindy K |

We were staying in Kapaa and the Monastery was close by. This was one of the most serene places we had the opportunity to visit. There is a dress code. It is preferred that women do not wear shorts. If you do, they provide sarongs to wear. The views behind and around the Monastery were spectacular. You don't have to be Hindu to visit, but they do have times where you may worship.

By Luika |

Not a huge tourist attraction, but plenty busy, so you can tell positive reviews have spread via word of mouth. This is a unique experience and a gorgeous spot to visit.

By HarlanFisherIV |

This is a wonderful and unique experience for visitors to Kauai. The monastery's not listed in brochures, at activity desks, or any of the normal places you would expect to find attractions or points of interest. Aren't we fortunate to have TripAdvisor as a tool for travel! Anyway, the grounds are breathtaking, it sits on 300 + acres on a ridge overlooking the Wailua River. A hand carved, rather large temple is being built and it's impressive, you can see it on the tour, which they have once a week, but reservations are a must due to limited parking. The invitation to tour the grounds is free, but a sense of doing what's right prompts you to leave a donation.

By STofNV |

Where to begin about this special place? you'll don a sarong, provided at entrance, proceed past a house-like meditation banyan tree with Ganesh wrapped in the trunk, remove your shoes, visit a loving inspired temple, and look around the garden over the river. You can see the new temple under construction.

We thought this was very special and worth the drive up the mountains to visit. Twice.

The swami swims in the pool at the base of the waterfalls every morning we were told.

This is not for everyone - but if this attracts you, consider visiting.
Also, around the corner is a grove of trees that shed the buddha's tears -bright blue tears. The trees are called Rudraksha trees.

very special little place to visit.

By Shannon M |

Open from 9-12, check times for tours. I never made it to a tour, but loved walking in the areas I was permitted. Peaceful. Great to meditate by the Banyan Tree, learned about Hinduism and visited the temple. I was lucky enough to catch the end of a tour and listen to a monk and some teachings. I think this was my favorite place in Kuaui! Namaste

This is one of the most healing and beautiful places on the planet truly a refuge from the world...
The monks have created a virtual oasis ...of peaceful life....!!!!
Beautifully landscaped the countryside with rare and exotic plants flowers and fruit trees...lovely statues of Ganesh Lord Shiva and Many other Dieties of Divinity
Daily worship which public is permitted to attend and be blessed by the love and devotion of the residing devotees
An amazing view of mount waialeale and a guided tour is avaiable after checking the tour schedule of the newly created hand carved in Sri Lanka granite temple totally amazing and nearing completion....You definately dont want to miss this unique and heart healing and peace giving center of love and devotion it is free you may however consider giving a donation to help with the new Temple that will surely bless the world and yourself ....Om Namah Shivaya!!!!!

By Johnboy212 |

Fun to visit the shrine here but do be respectful of the culture and traditions of the monks; it's their space and they don't have to open it to the public. Guided tours only once a week; make sure to call first. We sat for some of the worship service; it was beautiful and inspiring. The new granite temple they are building must be seen. It will become an important pilgrimage site for Hindus for sure.

By Hansa G |

The most amazing and peaceful experience. The monks are chantings for 24/7 shlokas that they are following since 1970 approximately.Which has contributed a lot in the energy level and peace giving place. The temple has limited timings for public hours so make sure to see hours before you go there.

By Hari Iyer |

A serene temple surrounded by beautiful gardens and the Wailua river gushing through it. The place was very easy to find with Google Maps. Understandably it being a monastery there are rules on when you can visit and what you can and cannot do. There are people to guide you. Their website is also quite informative.

By 111patricia |

This place is special. We loved every moment, from the banyan tree to the temple. Not to be missed when you are on Kauai

By tanyag220 |

Such a beautiful, peaceful place. It was one of the last places we saw before leaving the island. It will be one of the first places we visit the next time we visit Kauai. The people there were very friendly. The temple grounds were amazing and pristine. So much flora found there that I did not see anywhere else on the island. The gift shop offered many wonderful treasures too. Please stop by this special place. I know we will be back.

By stevedM9456SJ |

Recommended. You won't need more than than an hour or even less. It's in active use, so voices are kept down, people in shorts are asked to put on sarongs that they're wearing shorts and in one area to remove their shoes. I was struck by the feeling of calm and grace there.

By Vinayakbs |

The temple is in a serene atmosphere and beautiful. In a far away Hawaii you feel like in India and architecture is great. The place is so peaceful that you can forget about the world around you. Also, the nearby Rudraksha forest is beutiful.

By Kittygoth |

Spent a morning on these peaceful and tranquil grounds. If you want to step away for a moment of calm, this is the place to go. Beautiful views and stone sculptures only add to the experience.

By oooom |

Make a reservation in advance if you want to go on the tour. Gardens are open to the public (See website for days and times)

By Shaulie |

Tip: the monestary is only open to visitors from 9AM to 12PM daily. This is a beautiful and peaceful place to stop by. The Darshan (prayer service) happened around 10:30AM (the day we were there) - so we were lucky enough to participate. The gardens are beautiful.

By Tina A |

I have wanted to come here for years and finally got the chance. Be sure to call and make a reservation because they only offer the tour once a week and parking is limited. It's worth it to plan ahead. We just happened to be there when it was raining and weren't sure if they would still have the tour, but 40 of us took off in the rain. Bring mosquito repellent (although they have it available) and be sure to check the dress code (they have sarongs there too). Our guide was interesting and funny. It's a good two hours for the whole tour but so interesting, if you are a follower of the Hindu faith or just want to know more about it. Or if you really don't care about any of that, just to see the grounds and the fabulous and amazing temple they are building is worth taking this drive up from the Wailua River. They have a nice gift shop/bookstore with numerous sculptures, books and jewelry for sale.

By Kandice H |

We enjoyed learning about the Hindu Monastery in Kauai. It's definitely worth stopping if you like learning about other cultures and religions. It's in a beautiful area and the people are very welcoming. Cool place!

By jcgtune |

We went on a rainy day, but it was still very special. Beautiful gardens and views. This is a spiritual oasis in a busy town. Great gift shop/bookstore too.

By ORMum |

The Hindu monastery and Kadavul Temple is a beautiful and serene place very close to the Kapaa beach and Lihue airport area. You have to make a reservation if you want to attend the 9am morning services/puja. The area around the monastery and temple are beautiful and serene. After the 9am services, we were able to get a tour of the new temple which is simply beautiful. There are beautiful gardens and a waterfall that all add to the serene and peaceful feeling here. There is also a gift shop that sells rudraskha beads in addition to many other items.

By Michael D |

You won't be disappointed with your visit to this Hindu Temple. Plan ahead and make a reservation for the tour.

By albuqerquemama |

Attended a service which was quite lush and peaceful. Everyone we encountered there was friendly and helpful. I was a bit hesitant to observe the ceremony but everyone was welcoming. This place is beyond beautiful; this was my favorite thing on my trip to Kauai!

By michelle d |

If you're interested in experiencing or learning about different spiritual customs - this is a great place to visit. Note that if you don't want to take part in the worship, general visitation is only open from 10:45am-12pm daily. We found if you come closer to the beginning, it's not that busy (parking is limited as well). Everyone is so welcoming and will invite you into the worship during this time, you can decide to participate in the temple or not (we decided to watch from outside). Even watching from outside was extremely involving for us, you really feel the power of the ceremony when the bell is ringing. I really enjoyed learning about the beliefs of this religion - there's a section of the property devoted to helping explain the difference between Hinduism and Buddhism, which was really well done - check it out, you won't be sorry you did!

By travelagentreplies |

Walked through the gardens and observed a temple ceremony. Very beautiful. Wear appropriate clothing, meaning no tank tops or shorts and you have to remove shoes to go to temple. They have sarongs for use if you are not dressed appropriately. Nice gift shop and views too. It’s calming

By Tony M |

OK, what can you say, its a monastery, how cool can that be? Well, Extremely cool if you are Kauai's Hindu Monastery! Located in the most absolutely amazing location this place is a garden of Eden when it comes to fantastic flora. Such lush and beautiful trees, plants and flowers. Very much worth a visit as the temple itself is now nearly complete..The tour is amazing, you'll learn a ton about the monastery and the religion but even if you don't care about Hinduisnm this is a fantastically beautiful place to visit :-)

By Cliff I |

This is not a tourist destination so much as a deliberate choice to be within a working monastery where beauty and reflection reward you deeply. Not to be rushed but truly savored. It is wise to submit a request to sit/meditate in the small temple in the last hour the grounds are open to the public each day. You will be amply rewarded in quietude.

By mva9 |

We were unaware of this temple till someone local suggested it. Found it absolutely peaceful and divine. There is a dress code to enter the temple premises. The temple is ideal for meditation as it is very quiet and with few people. The temple has the deity of Lord Shiva, the Hindu God.

Outside there is greenery all around with ponds and trees.

There is a new temple which is getting built and can be seen some distance away.

We also went to see the idol of the Hindu God Ganesha which is in the middle of a grove of Rudraksha (Elaeocarpus ganitrus roxb) trees. Located about 0.5 miles from the temple further west.

By monimoni2015 |

We went to the puja in the morning at 9AM, and it was a lovely ceremony done with great intent and devotion. This a very quiet and powerful temple charged with energy, containing beautiful statues and a massive crystal pillar.

The Banyan tree is very beautiful and a nice spot to meditate and the Rudraksha forest is amazing--especially the color of the berries which is a cobalt blue that I have rarely seen in nature.

We spent half a day at the temple and gift shop and enjoyed ourselves very much.

By Matty Lin |

Easy drive and easy to find. I parked under the giant banyan tree. You enter and ding a bell to let the gods know you're here. I'm not hindu but I wanted to visit this place and feel the peace and serenity. People there were so incredible and friendly (even the other visitors). Going into the big banyan tree was so incredible!! Definitely sit inside and just be still. Hopefully there won't be any groups of people around and you just hear the birds and the breeze. Further in, you're asked to remove shoes and you can stroll next to the pool that's there and admire the flowers and foliage they have. Great view of a waterfall behind the main prayer building. Just keep in mind, it's a quiet and peaceful place for a reason - no one's talking much, no noise, no foolishness. Very calming. They have a nice gift shop as well with lots of books and trinkets to take home.

By Mary H |

I went the the morning ceremony and really appreciated being a part of the Hindu traditional ceremony. I would suggest that there be a way for better instructions for people to turn off their cell phones completely. A woman next to me texting during the ceremony was distracting. But overall a wonderful experience. The grounds are amazing and magical. One could spend hours just being present here.

By Isa S |

Beautiful gardens, very serene environment. Tour guide was very passionate. Impressive to see them hand carve every stone for the Irvaivan Temple. Very limited parking, need to make reservations. Dress code required - no shorts.

By GRZ |

We had a pleasure of visiting the Valley of the Temples in Oahu during the same trip but even there among the various temples we haven't come across a Hindu one so this was very pleasant "surprise" to me

You drive through residential areas and it's almost hard to believe there is a temple in this area when you arrive - it has a pretty scenic surrounding with lots of trees and the river. The entrance to the grounds is free, they are fairly small and there is a limited area to walk around but quite pretty and nicely decorated - as others said you can schedule/book in advance to attend the ceremony, I want to say.

I follow no religion but always find it interesting to visit the temples to learn something new about different cultures - here is no different and there is a special area with boards that speak/explain a lot - you can definitely spend here a lot of time doing the readings, attending the ceremony or just like us stop by for a few minutes to explore the grounds.

TIP: follow the Dress Code - they have all the necessary "pieces" to adjust you available for free rental at the entrance - they even provide different colors for the sarongs :) and there are shelves/benches to put your shoes away when walking around the outside of the temple as well

By TravelingTraveler |

We were surprised to find a beautiful Hindu Monastery on Kauai up the road that follows the Wailua River. It is such a beautiful, peaceful site. It’s about 4.2 miles up the road. Turn left and it is at the end of the street.

By laurelpetterson |

The amazing garden that has been created over forty years is worth a visit just by itself. When you realize what an architectural marvel has been created with stone quarried in India and then carved and installed on Kauai, you will be amazed.

By mmajere |

Gorgeous waterfall and wonderful deities for meditative sessions under banyan trees. On certain days, you are allowed into the granite temple. Check the website for open days. Use a sarong provided at entrance if you are wearing shorts.

By Lone Wolfe |

This is a truly remarkable place of meditation and reflection. The grounds provide a place to find one self and to review your path and the true meaning of what life has to offer.
The scenery is beautiful and provide a calmness I have never experience anywhere else in the world.

By Thomas S |

We went up there on a very rainy day. Cool place if you have never been to a Hindu place before. You can even "burn" away all your sins!

By Rose J |

We've visited several times and always thoroughly enjoyed it. Surrounded by outstanding beauty and welcoming. I always buy something at the gift shop.

By harish621 |

We spent a few days here and really enjoyed the temple and it's surroundings. Very calm and peaceful environment.

By VinaM154 |

We made an appt to be able to enter the temple, which is lovely and serene. A great place to meditate. And then give yourself time to tour the beautiful grounds, see the overlook of the Wialua River Falls, visit the gift shop and pick up some special momentos.

By Claes W |

What a fantastic place for serene relaxation and mindful meditation. So much effort has been invested into creating this place, wearing the traditional sarong is an honor!

By joyce r |

A lovely place for a quiet walk. Gorgeous views and gardens. The gift shop was well stocked with something for everyone.

By magicblueflower |

It's very peaceful and beautiful here. They only do tours on certain days and reservations are required, but worth a visit any day.

By guluchadha |

It is a Monastery practising Hinduism but all the monks residing there are non Indians and not born as Hindus. Ritualistic worship of Lord Shiva is performed by resident monks 24 hrs/ 7 days a week. Open to public only 3 hours in the morning. A new big temple is under construction for the last several years..
They have planted on the property trees bearing Rudrakasak beads which are very rare. A must visit place for the faithful

By pam l |

Guided tours are offered only once a week. Call in advance to find out when because the guided tour allows you to view parts of the property that are private.

By Laurel Y |

There is a grove of trees called "blue marble trees," with a bench that you can sit down and enjoy. Take advantage of this beautiful scenery.

By joe20162015 |

If you are on Kauai and are looking for a spiritual boost visit this magical spot. It is truly exceptional to see such a place outside of India. It closes at 12 noon so a morning visit is required. Wednesday morning at 9 is a free tour of the grounds which includes a visit to the largest stone Hindu temple outside of India. This is a religious temple so wear long pants.or you will be asked to wear a sarong(complimentary use available). There is a visitors center with books, momentos, and a Noni juice they produce on site. They have a rose quarts crystal which I believe is one of the largest in the world. A Puja(prayer ceremony) is conducted every morning which you may join. A must visit for soul seekers.

By ateach52 |

Make sure you book this (free) tour in plenty of time, as it’s only given once or twice a week. Takes about two hours and is definitely better than just going there yourself and wandering around on your own as you get lots of very interesting information from Vel, the excellent guide who’s lived there for years. Dress appropriately although they have sarongs of you have shorts on. He’ll take you all through the grounds and to the temple that is presently being built and carved by Sri Lankan stone masons. The grounds and views of the mountains and valley will take your breath away!

By wandersmuch |

What a wonderful morning retreat and they make visitors feel so welcome to join in on the 9am puja should you be interested in meditating/observing.

By Katie H |

We stopped here on our way to a hike in the area and stayed about 20 minutes. It has a nice small walking path that weaves through a garden. Sarongs are provided at the entry for all guests to wear. You are welcome to go inside the temple if you wish. Bug spray is recommended if you plan on spending a significant amount of time here.

By sealbeachtraveler |

To get there, you drive above Wialua falls through a nondescript residential area to a jungle parking area. Your guide greets you and soothes with an introduction to the tenants of Hinduism. A great story about an orphan, star of the San Francisco ballet who left for years of study in India and returned to find this property on Kauai to launch a 30+ year construction of an amazing hand carved temple to bring the joys of Hinduism to the West. Stroll through a garden with plants with leaves the size of tablecloths, to see the white granite temple on a 1000 year flash concrete base with intricate carvings from a whole village in India. There are carvers working now to try to finish by 2022. Enjoy the banyan meditation tree, a jungle pool fit for Tarzan, a book store with crystals, carvings and of course books. Learn the basics of an ancient and powerful religion.

By Timothy5 |

Incredible to see all of the blocks and statues carved in India and brought to this beautiful setting and then gradually put in place. 16 years of construction so far. The service in the monastery prepares you. Talking with a monk gives you background. Just an extraordinary vision and undertaking!

By Debra R |

No not miss this experience!! The grounds are breathtaking!! If you are into flora & fauna it is absolutely amazing!!!

By explore_enjoy |

We had read about this temple on trip advisor before heading to the place. It is very relaxing and peaceful. There are meditation spots on the temple grounds. the library is a great resource too. I recommend you check their website and call ahead. They do limited tours-- only once a week. It was a very informative tour, group is very large usually . It is an absolutely breathtaking visit with beautiful picture taking opportunities.

By kamakshi2015 |

The South Indian temple in Hawaii is a place which invokes the devotion once you enter the holy premises . The beautifully done skuptures on the pillars , the style of the traditional South Indian temple is simply mesmerizing . The other small shrines located within the premises also shower blessing on the devotees who come here . The entire work of this temple was commissioned to the well known scupture making community from Karnataka and Tamilnadu and took many years to complete . A must visit if you religious minded and you are in Kauai.

By John F |

This is definitely worth doing. Extremely interesting. It was the high point of my visit to Kauai. A welcome, intellectual break from the beach.

By importedgood |

Stumbled upon this temple and was so glad! Just 15 minutes of walking around the place and I felt calm and rejuvenated. I could sit under that banyan tree all day.

They have sarongs for you to cover up with if you're wearing shorts, sleeveless shirts. I think they only allow visitors until noon. Lots of parking. We went on a Friday.

By Stephylee |

You don't have to be of any denomination to see this. No photo will do it justice. You may go from 9-10:45 if you wish to pray or meditate. Otherwise they open to the public 10:45-12:00. You can get a guided tour but it's only once a week and you have to make a reservation. The grounds are beyond even the beauty of Kauai, it's a must see. Where the expanse opens and you see the new temple in the distance, it's breathtaking awe. Visit under the Banyon tree, skip the gift shop until the end because it's open longer. There are saris or sarongs available to wear, as long as you don't have shorts or sleeveless shirts you are ok. Be mindful of areas to remove your shoes. Very happy we saw this sight.

By macmanion |

The peace and energy you feel in this place is considerable. The shrine and its grounds and the views are worth to visit.

By Tara |

this is a great quiet and lovely garden that is free and also have the only rudruska trees in the US. great spot to walk my cat.

By Steven858 |

Prepare for a full explanation of the history of the Swamis and the temple's history. After that 45 minutes a walking tour is conducted and you can see Monks and Swamis walking around the grounds as they attend to the beautiful gardens and chores which make up their daily lives. Use insect repellent for the mosquitoes greet you at the welcome pagoda.

By La_Carcedo |

This place is peaceful, amazing, spiritual, calm, nature, silence...........truly beautiful and unique. Most of the place you can not take pics but just be able to see it and have it in your soul is more that enought

By DoctorM |

Fire up your GPS. There are no signs pointing the way to Kauai's Hindu Monastery located at the end of a residential street about 4 miles west of Kapa'a.

The monastery is open to the public only from 9am to noon. There is a worship service(all are welcomed) from 9am to 10:45 and the grounds are open for viewing from 10:45 to noon. No shorts, no tank tops, no bare legs for men or women (sarongs are provided) , and you must remove your shoes before entering the temple area.

The grounds open to the public are small but stunning. Walk inside an enormous banyan tree to discover a huge black three-headed statue. Marvel at the 16 ton statue of a black bull which faces the entrance of the temple. Inside the temple you can observe, in silence, 108 statues of the god Siva performing his celestial dance Plus an amazing stone and crystal artifact which depicts the movement of the planets and stars. And finally Lord Siva in the central altar flanked by two other deities.

Frankly, we've never seen such extensive and large spider webs as here at the temple so watch your head. The views of the waterfall and pools below the temple are stunning. Unfortunately, you are not allowed to travel unescorted to the construction site of the new stone temple.

Certainly worth an hour visit and a welcome change from the tourist environment found along the beach. An exceptional beautiful location on a beautiful island.

By BhadraKali2015 |

We loved the temple and the huge banyan tree! If you aren’t dressed modestly don’t let that stop you. There are wraps provided at the entrance that our kids used to cover their arms and legs (you can’t go in the temple wearing tank tops or shorts). The inside of the temple is not to be missed! The Ganesha is amazing!! And the energy is wonderful. The monks were very nice and can explain things to you if you’re new to the temple experience. The gift shop sells a huge selection of beautiful natural stone beaded mala bracelets, all made with a rudraksha bead from the forest down the street. That is also not to be missed! Leaving the temple, turn left and drive about a half mile to the forest on your left - you’ll see a dirt road and the entrance is marked with a sign. Plenty of parking. Great experience, highly recommend both places!!

By Tamara E |

Didn't book formal tour so didn't get to see the main temple. It's under construction so if this is your main goal, you need to book it.

By ymeroe |

This is a breath taking place to visit, but be mindful that this is a working monastery and the true hours of visitation if you are not going to visit are limited. They close to the public at noon I believe as well. But so beautiful

By Kre Naidu |

This Hindu Monastery is a hidden gem in Kauai for those seeking an Indian Spiritual Encounter.
Park your vehicle on the property and you walk into a historical story of the property displayed over several wall plaques. There is paper available where you can write any burdens or sins and burn the message in a safe place.
From here, covering is required. Garmets are freely available/provided for the covering of legs and shoulders if necessary. You take the path up to the main temple. On the right you'll pass the gift shop which has many Indian Made items. On the left there is a deity in the woods. You may visit the 6 headed deity and stand in awe under the impressive trees.
The temple grounds are mostly free to explore other than a few privately marked areas. The main shrine is a gorgeous granite structure with stones hauled from India. You can sit, mediate, and enjoy prayer as the monks on site perform rituals throughout the day. There is an inner peace you feel while in the temple and on the property. Towards the back of the property is an overlook. There is a breath taking view of a waterfall and small valley. Guests are instructed to depart by 12 Noon so that the monks may continue their prayer and perform other rituals uninterrupted, so take care to arrive early. 1-2 hours budget should be ample.

By Lorna Bergeson A |

Just go and plan on spending an hour at least. people here are respectful of nature and each other. No pressure to donate but you can if you wish. The views from up there are magnificent

By Michelle P |

Give yourself the gift of a retreat from the hubbub of Kauai with a visit to the Kauai Monastery. We were warmly welcomed to participate in the morning service, walked around the lush gardens, took in the breathtaking view of the waterfall and new temple, and purchased wonderful and fair priced souvenirs from the gift store.

By VictoriaAshland |

The grounds are lovely, the spirituality is palpable and it’s not too impossible to find, lol, though everything off the beaten track requires patience and eagle eyes. Dress as they request, it’s not hard , and like you’re in church, quiet and respectful and you’ll have a wonderful day.

By Lisa S |

We had heard about the monastery on a previous trip but never ventured there. I'm so glad we did! This is a truly spiritual place and a nice respite from an active holiday. The day we went there were no tours offered, and that is the only reason I'm giving it 4 rather than 5 stars, because I wasn't sure about the significance of the beautiful statues, temple and shrines. But there is plenty to read at various points and the environment is lush and soothing.

By Anita |

This is a spiritual visit, and even if you are not religious or follow Hinduism, it's worth a visit because of the energy and peacefulness of the place. I have visited many Hindu temples around the world, but this is unique. It's also the first time we were able to visit a Hindu temple undergoing construction and talk to the sculptors. They said that each tap on the stone is an act of worship. The temple is built on a majestic part of the hill and it's where the founding Swami saw Shiva in 1969.

We were blessed to talk to the founding swamis and hear his perspective on life and death, and how the temple came to fruition.

Also, if you wear shorts to the temple, they have sarongs at the entrance where you can wrap yourself waist down.

By Ramya Rao P |

Namaste!! We visited the temple today and were threatened in an extremely dangerous, racially-motivated manner. On our way out of the temple, my cousin went to use the bathroom. He was told that he was trespassing and immediately turned back to avoid doing so. As he was leaving, the worker who had told him to leave called him racial slurs. When he turned back, the worker screamed violently at him and brandished his tools aggressively in his direction. I heard the screaming and called my uncle over. When he and my cousin returned to request an explanation for his behavior, he did not let them speak, but continued to scream and brandish his weapon violently. He also behaved this way to my other cousin.

We then approached the staff member (a short-haired, shorter elderly Caucasian woman) who had been directing people in and out of the main temple. She refused to acknowledge what had happened and laughed (literally) when we mentioned the racist behavior. She walked off instead of answering our questions about what more could be done.

Until then, we had been having a wonderful time at the monastery. As devout Hindus, we worshipped at the temple and visited the beautiful grounds. We even bought multiple items at the gift shop and donated. Instead of leaving with these feelings, we are traumatized by our treatment by the worked and the refusal of the staff member to hear our concerns or take any responsibility.

We hope the temple will look into this situation and make sure no one else faces what we did. At the very least, we would like an apology from the worker and staff member. We will also be returning the items we purchased at the gift shop (they are wonderful, but we cannot disassociate them from what happened).

Thank you,

Ramya

By Cindy T |

We enjoyed visiting this beautiful temple and monastery a couple of times. Participated in the beautiful Siva Puja ceremony, we walked the beautiful grounds and visited the Rudraksha Forest. The gift center has beautiful wonderful gifts and treasures that are priced very well. Highly recommend!

By Perry H |

This is one of my favorite Temples and place to visit on the Island. Absolutely stunning grounds and a beautiful walk through the property. Many plant and tree varieties, streams and ponds make for a perfect setting for the Temple and meditation. Call ahead to save your spot for the tour.

By DrDubious |

All the adjectives you've read in the other reviews are correct: beautiful, serene, inspiring, tranquil, gorgeous, healing, etc. I have nothing but admiration for this wonderful place. The problem, as usual, is human. We took the (reservation-only) guided tour, which is the only way to see all the areas open to the public. Prior to the tour, however, we were obliged to sit through a rambling and excruciatingly boring 45-minute lecture (it seemed longer!) on the history of the monastery and the finer points of the Saivite school of Hinduism, all of which is readily available on their website. It added very little to our appreciation of the monastery's wonders, and could have been done in 15 minutes. I'll definitely go back, but I'll do the self-guided tour, even if it means I won't get to see everything.

By Robert E |

An experience not to be missed. Make sure you call well in advance of your visit to Kauai to ensure that the tour is being offered and to book your parking spot - usually only once or twice a month. Be careful of your attire as per the rules (be sure to inquire dress code when calling to book). The amazing $22 million new temple is close to being completed - we were told a date of April 22, 2022. We were able to go into the current temple, but hours rather limited. Very beautiful grounds and informative and gracious tour guide (Vel). I am glad I visited this gem!

The kauai Hindu Monastery is the most heavenly place I have ever visited.
Calm, peaceful and so very beautiful.
You definitely feel the presence of God.
With special permission you can visit the new Sivan temple that is under construction.
The Swamis are very knowledgable and are always ready to explain and answer your questions. Do not fail to get the blessings of Bodinatha Swami, if you are fortunate to meet him.
Thanks to my son, he has enabled me to visit this Holy Monastery 5 times over the last few years and I consider myself blessed.
I am an elderly person but God willing I will visit this heavenly place over and over again.
Please visit this holy and heavenly place and experience it yourself.
Open to visitors between 9 AM and 12 Noon

Beautiful grounds. Shiva temple. Lovely experience. Peaceful.
Puja at 9 am is wonderful and a wonderful meditation experience. The monks are kind.

It was very spiritual and sacred experience. Loved the energy of this place. A place of stillness and peace.

its both interesting building, wonderful nature around. Its a bit
difficult to find as there are not signs for it, so just ask people when you are on the highway when you visit the natural reserve to see also Rainbow Eucalyptus

My wife and I enjoyed our experience at the Hindu Monastery. We made advanced reservations to attend the puja, which we found very interesting. We then spent a considerable amount of time viewing the flora, statues, and surrounding area. It was a very worthwhile experience.

A lovely Temple. The architecture is interesting, the grounds are beautiful. There are Hindu sculptures, some very nice crystals, including one of the 12 "earthkeeper" crystals in the world.
It is a functioning Temple, so you must be respectful of the worshippers. However, they are welcoming and friendly. The grounds are truly beautiful and the views are excellent.
I imagine this is a must for any practitioner of the Hindu Faith visiting the island. It is certainly an excellent choice for any visitor regardless of faith or lack thereof. Parking is accessible, they have a small gift shop which sells crystals, statues, various books on Hinduism and small jewelry. There are restrooms on the grounds.

I had a chance to visit this temple in dec 2018. It was a Hindu temple out of nowhere in Hawaii. We were given a short tour by swamiji and he took us on a golf cart all the way to the beautiful temple which is still under construction. The Lingam or phallus was made of mercury and the base was made of panchloha. I was so much at peace and I would suggest this if you ever visit Kauai.

We first went six years ago. Then we went two weeks ago for another visit of the Sunday puja. It is a great place to meditate. Then we booked a special guided tour of the new Iraivnian temple they are building. It will be finished in about two years. The tour was excellent, and well worthwhile. We got to see parts of the grounds closed to the public on previous visits. This is a beautiful sanctuary and everyone working there and the Swamis have a special glow.

Our family - two adults and two kids (8 and 10) made the trip last week. We went around 10.30am and spent about an hour and a half here.

This was a very serene place with a Banyan tree (Meditation Banyan), a beautiful (small) temple tank, a nicetemple (Kadavul) with a Spatika Lingam, Nandi bull & Dwaja stambham. Irrespective of your religious preference, this is a peaceful and beautiful place to visit.

We also went to the Rudraksha grove down the road and it was great to see the rudraksha berries - never knew they were blue in color as I have only seen the dried ones on a garland.

Interesting history. The tour guides seem very knowledgeable. You'll need to call and make reservations for the tour, which is recommended. Beautiful grounds. They explain that's not a place where you need to be quiet, whcih lightens the mood tremendously.

The ground were amazing with the shrine at the base of the Banyan tree and the views of the temple being built. Very relaxing.

Please be respectful! If the sign says to cover your legs and take off your shoes do it! They have sarongs for MEN and women. Wear them!

Beautiful spiritual place.

Beautiful setting and clear answers to your questions. I had never attended a Hindu service before. The beauty and experience leaves you feeling peaceful. Worth visiting.

By Anne D |

Stopped by during services so couldn't see inside the temple, but the grounds are beautiful and worth a stop. Just taking a moment out of a busy trip to say a prayer or just take a breath.

The Hindu gardens are open to the public for 3 hrs each morning.....~9-Noon....there are guided tours but on a moon phase or something.....I suppose you might get lucky enough to be on one.....it's a stunningly beautiful serene place though.....it's hidden in a residential neighborhood, no signage so use your GPS on the address....107 Kaholalele Rd., Kapaa

The “energy” there is off the charts. It is very beautiful and peaceful.
The website in my opinion is difficult to schedule a reservation. But be patient and just go. It’s worth it even if you don’t get into the big temple.

This is a beautiful and welcoming Hindu temple and monastery. Please review their visiting hours, expectations and guides on their website before visiting – we nearly missed these, and would have missed the visitor hours which are restricted from 9 AM to 12 PM. Please pay attention to dress code and shoe removal expectations, but they have sarongs on entry if you need it to cover up. Furthermore, reservations are required to attend religious services in the temple.
I commend the monks and volunteers who create such a welcoming environment- there are many signs, kiosks, brochures and even a guided tour at 10:45 which made our visit very easy and serene. There were visitors from several backgrounds on our visit, although most are South Asian families.
In addition to the detailed and fantastic stone sculptures and temples, the lush grounds and plantings are beautiful with the Wailua River running through them. Recommend visiting with an open mind for a unique experience.

This monastery is a beautiful destination. It is a sanctuary of many kinds - the grounds are breathtaking and for those seeking spiritual comfort or grounding, it can be an amazing experience. My husband and I visited 16 years ago and this time brought our kids - both were touched by what they experienced. Definitely worth the trip, but please not the visiting times and dress code.

By pazduha |

A peaceful oasis. You're not allowed to go anywhere near the new temple, which is under construction and looks amazing, but the existing worship space is open. They're quite strict about visiting hours, so pay close attention to that - a phone call to double check when visitors are allowed is probably a good idea. Contrary to what I've read online from other people, we found everyone at the monastery to be very friendly.

Interesting and very beautiful. They have tours once a week, no charge. Be sure to call for a reservation as they have limited parking. The tour itself is almost 3 hours long including about an hour of info at the beginning in chairs under a canopy. You can spend the whole time with the tour or leave whenever you wish.

They are still working on the new temple which is pretty awesome. All the stones are hand carved and we got to see some of the carvers in action. It is very slow and tedious work with a beautiful outcome.

Check out their website and be sure to follow their dress code.

This place is a short and lovely drive from our hotel in Lihue. On the way, there’s a lookout point not to be missed, which is the Opaeka’a Falls. Deep in the jungle, lies these two temples, one under construction, and one older but smaller temple. Although the parking is limited, there weren’t many people there. The temples open at 9.00 am and close at 12.00 pm. Up to 10.45 am is the temple prayer service.
We walked around the temple, and looked at the greenery around. It’s truly heavenly......
There’s a pool to dip your feet, which is advisable, as the Hindu custom always encourages one to wash their feet before entering a temple.
There is a massive banyan tree around a Shiva deity. The temple is small, but has the vibes of a place of worship. The serene surroundings and the vibes you get is truly wonderful.
The flow of the Wailua river can be seen at a distant. The image is like a postcard.
The shop nearby sells many things, mostly from India.
Before leaving, do take that short drive to the Rudraksha forest. It’s well worth a visit. Its a small area filled with the large Rudraksha trees.
Finally, I would like to say this. It’s amazing that in a remote island in the middle of the Pacific, someone has had the thought of building this place of worship. A visit to this place is like a brief feel of heaven.

Special history associated with this temple. Take the tour -book a reservation. The morning service is welcoming and spiritual. Dress modestly although paros are provided.

I loved that they allowed us to partake in the ceremony! It's wonderful to learn about other religions and cultures. The grounds that the monks take care of are outstanding. Such sustainability and beauty!

This is our second visit to Kauai and the temple; once again the temple is a highlight of our trip. Went there at 9am and witnessed the blissful Abhishekam for Lord Shiva. The puja lasted for 30 minutes, followed by devotee chants, and a Harati/Vibhudi/Kumkum offering, which lasted until 10am. The temple grounds are heavenly and soul soothing. The banyan tree is mystical and calming, ideal for a few minutes of meditation. I also recommend the visitor store, the lady there is very welcoming and shared the story of the crystal Lingam patiently. Don't miss the mystical Rudraksha forest, which is a half mile north of the temple. Overall, you can spend 2.5 hours in the monastery.

By kaitlinnicole |

Was very cool to visit. Pretty and very peaceful. However, we couldn't get down to the big temple. It was blocked off, so that was disappointing

By Jaime444213 |

We had the most amazing experience in April of 2022, the Monastery is beautiful and meditating under the trees and experiencing the ceremony from 11AM to 12PM was the highlight. From the time you enter the Monastery, you can feel the Tranqulity. Everyone was calm and peaceful. I recommend visiting the Monsatery if you're visiting Kauai.

The grounds are spectacular. We spent over an hour walking around the grounds and learning about Hinduism.

My family were in Kauai in September 2017. We are of the Hindu faith and while I was researching for our trip on TripAdvisor, I saw that there was this temple in Kauai. My parents are religious so I brought them here to visit. We all enjoyed this beautiful and serene place of prayer. Your shoulders have to be covered but there are shawls available at the front. We loved the view, and loved the story of the crystal lingum (which one of the ladies in the giftshop shared with us).

In the morning hours you can come and see the beautiful Hindu temple and monastery. It is very beautiful and sacred and there is a beautiful view of the Wailua River. Breathtaking! Check online for hours that they are open. It seemed to be limited.

By Lisa H |

The monastery is slightly off the beaten path but well worth the 15 minutes or so to get there from the main road. There is a beautiful meditation area under a huge Banyan tree, a beautiful temple, and interesting gift shop with unusual jewelry and other items. But perhaps most interesting is the view across the valley to another temple. On a misty day, it looks like an apparition from another world.

By Coffeehiker |

Did not expect such a historic place in the Pacific. Was there early morning when bus load of tourists arrived. Later learned it's better to go in afternoon as most buses have left. Take time to learn and enjoy. The island is in island time anyway.

By rakesh p |

The only Hindu temple that does not serve prashad to the devotees. Place is beautiful. Okay for a one time visit. You need to make advanced reservations.People are polite and nice.

By jyo10 |

This place is absolutely a must visit while in Kauai. Very serene and tranquil surroundings,.
Beautiful hindu Siva temple very impressed to learn, the monks are well versed with chants and rituals.
Temple is closed by the noon.

Sit down, forget all your problems and meditate! this place is good great to have a quiet moment off from your most likely stressful life. There are certain protocols that you need to follow but like any religious temple, is was a very peaceful and interesting visit.

By WellTraveled3 |

Our visit to the Hindu Monastery in Kapaa was an extremely interesting and informative experience. The monastery can be self-toured and you can observe the services (quietly and respectfully by wearing a sarong over shirts or skirts). The store is very well stocked with a wide variety of items at all price ranges and the staff is very helpful and informative.

Note that the entrance to the monastery is off of the main road (off of Route 580) through a gate. The setting is very beautiful, quiet and relaxing and the vista of the river valley below and the gardens are stunning.

By travelwisher |

Breathtaking views and location, must see whatever your religious beliefs are ! It is open only from 9am to noon and the walk to the larger monastry is only through a tour guide (free) and the tours are at 9.30am and 10.45am.

Another couple we were with read reviews about this place being beautiful and worth a visit so we went. We were happy we made the trip. The grounds are lovely and the temple was intricate and worth taking your shoes off. It's a super quiet and zen setting. If you have time, it's worth visiting.

By nadiaa |

we were really disappointed to arrive at the monastery and to be told that a mistake had been made and we would not be able to have the full guided tour that day. we had booked in advance no easy task as the schedule is very limited. this was the second time I tried to see the temple. maybe third time lucky. what we were able to see was beautiful, just wanted more.

By PepperRoss |

Loved the lush gardens surrounding the monastery and the beautiful view to the waterfall across the valley. Beautiful, peaceful spot.

By The_Rock_50 |

We visited the grounds and the monastery temple.
We even attended a ceremony in the morning.
That was such a great experience ! Something you must do if you can.
We did not know what to do at time but you follow others and there is always someone there to help you and guide you... as so to make the experience even better.
We loved it.

The grounds are lovely, all the plants, the trees, the buildings and fountain are so beautiful. They take real attention to details.

There is a shop on site to buy souvenirs, spiritual objects, prayer beads and books.

We will definitely go again on our next trip to Kauai.

Have wanted to do this tour for several years and finally got around to doing it. Found that the first two weeks that offered the guided tours were already booked so a tip to remember is to book in advance if you want to see it. Parking space is limited so they only take so many reservations. My granddaughter was with us and due to an injury, was wearing a boot and on crutches. Luckily we were on a paved path the whole time and there were areas to rest and sit. Knew nothing about Hinduism so it was enlightening to participate in some rituals and learn about others in general. Tour lasted about 2 1/2 hours. Use a bathroom before starting and bring a water bottle. There was no charge for the guided tour but you could leave a donation at their little book store or buy incense, jewelry, crystals, books etc. The views, statues and landscaping are amazing. Our DGD (17 yrs old) thought it was a little too long and got bored but for retired folks or those interested in beautiful gardens or want to learn a little about Hinduism it is a wonderful experience.

The views are stunning. It is a calm and serene place. Take a private tour of the temple. Loved it. The rudraksh forest is amazing too.

By swensy |

Went during a cleansing ritual. We couldn't go to the bigger temple but we're still able to get a good vibe. I would recommend this stop to everyone. I am going back and plan on staying longer..

By trixi |

Took this free guided tour thru the lovely manicured estate. There was a representative of their commune guiding us. First we gathered together seated on chairs while the Hindu religion was explained to us. There was a subtle push to buy books from the gift shop. I loved the tour but my husband and teenage granddaughter got antsy after an hour. There is free literature to educate yourself about the temple so in hindsight I would have gone on a self guided tour and read the brochures available.

By Tara R |

I really like to have my children experience different cultures and religions. We took the advice of others and called ahead to see when we could visit. The grounds/gardens were beautiful. I highly recommend. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because we were not allowed near the Temple that is being built. We would have liked to be able to get a little closer.

By ORMum |

The Kadavul temple is a part of the Kauai Hindu monastery. It is beautiful, and is close to the Rudraksha forest. I recommend spending at least 2-3 hours here so you can enjoy the morning puja, the library and gift shop, the tour to the temple and the surrounding area of the monastery.

By Al A |

Easy to find and very interesting. Sarongs provided for cover-ups if you happen to wear shorts. Get there before noon as it closes to visitors. The grove of trees planted by the monks nearby is interesting, too. A couple of picnic tables in the grove made for a nice lunch spot.

By amitsak |

Peace and tranquility are the words that come to my mind when I think about this temple. Located in the beautiful part of Kauai, we have visited this temple twice now over the years. The priests are very welcoming and friendly.
The energy in this temple is something you have to experience to feel the bliss!! It's our happy place!!!

By kpn320 |

Call them in advance (before you travel) to get a reservation for a "guided" tour. You can always take a self-guided tour (between 9 am and noon only). They request that you dress "modestly" - they do, however, provide sarongs that you can borrow to cover yourself. Also, be aware that you need to remove your shoes before you enter. We took the self-guided tour. There is a wonderful grove where you can meditate (under a large banyan tree).

A true hidden tucked away gem. You will get a bit of a background and history of this monastery as well as a guided tour and walk through the magnificent gardens.
