A peaceful destination on Sunset Beach offering a place for reflection and sharing happy, sad, memorable experiences. When reading the words of those before you, you realize you are not alone on the journey of life.

Great stopping place on daily hikes from sunset beach to little river inlet. Nice to collect your thoughts and be thankful for all that you have.

Visiting Myrtle beach with my girlfriend and her family. She has wanted to observe Sea Turtles hatch for years so when we found out there were nests we had to head that way. The beach is located about an hour from where we are staying in Myrtle but it is much closer than our residences so it was a no brainer to try.
From what I learned, unless the turtles have hatched and are making their way to the ocean you are pretty much looking at sand. I'm sure if you get lucky and time it right it would be a memorable experience.
The mailbox is like any other mailbox but is a novel concept. There is a journal inside allowing for anyone to leave a note behind. It was about a 4.5 round trip so be prepared.

Visit Kindred Spirit and write down your thoughts and concerns, read some of the notebooks, and leave your cares behind. The beauty of this place and the peace it provides is unique.
For more about the story of Kindred Spirit and Bird Island, consider going on one of the Bird Island Walks. They take place each Wednesday morning June through August. They leave from the 40th St. walkway at 8:30 a.m.

My boyfriend and 2 friends and I specifically went for a walk on Sunset beach to find the Kindred Spirit Mailbox. It was a nice walk. The view was great. You could see Myrtle Beach South Carolina from the Mailbox. The Mailbox is easy to find. There is a bench you can sit on right next to it. There was no flag pole though. There is also a nature trail you can take right before you get to the mailbox that will take you to the back side of Bird Island so you can see the sound side. It was pretty. Watch out for sandspurs.
If you are planning to take a walk on the beach then there is no reason why you shouldn't go visit the mailbox. You don't have to leave a message if you don't want.

This mail box is amazing. The box has 5+ notebooks to write in and it is touching to read some of the other stories in it. The walk is really good, it's at least a 3 mile round trip from the last beach access but it is great.

It's worth the walk on Sunset Beach to find the kindred spirit mailbox. When you sit on the bench and look out of the ocean you can't help but be filled with the sense of wonder and peace. It is such a serene and beautiful experience. You can sit and read through the journals or write something yourself. It's a great place to connect with God, yourself and/or nature. And every day rush it's nice to have a place to go and just BE.

Depending on where you are on the beach, it may be a little bit of a trek (approximately 1-5 miles). It is a nice spot though, if you can muster it. Stay hydrated and wear good sun protection, especially if your trek is going to be long.
Essentially, its a lovely spot for photo opportunities, but other than that, nothing much more. It may also be overcrowded with tourists and hippies.

First time visitors seem to have a fixation on visiting the Mailbox. Frankly, there's not much to see, although the journals kept in the mailbox make for interesting reading. The Mailbox is perched on the edge of a dune and there are two wood benches to sit on. The walk there is actually the experience. Bird Island (no longer an island since the inlet filled in after a hurricane years ago) is a nature preserve. Along the way to the Mailbox there's wildlife and dune systems to be appreciated. But don't climb on the dunes...they're very fragile. Sady, every year we see visitors climbing on the dunes to get a view and this is destroying them. It's tempting but please don't do it. Also, it's a good healthy walk of about 20 mins. or more from the Sunset Beach pier, depending on how fast you can go. Not recommended if you have mobility imparments. Bring water in warm weather. Keep in mind that you can plainly see the Mailbox once you are near it past a large dune with foliage on it. It's not hidden away behind anything, so no need to go off exploring to find it.

Staying at my sister's place for the Christmas holiday, we were able to take a walk on the beach to the Kindred Spirit mailbox. We each left our names in the notebook. It was cute decoration with a Christmas decoration.

Your significant other will appreciate it. It is about a 2 to 2 1/2 mile walk but well worth it. Afternoon or later afternoon is a good time to visit.

This is agrat walk to the Kindred Spirit from Sunset Beach. You will cross the turtlr sanctuary and see many birds. The sand is flat and wonderful to walk on.

We are just leaving South Carolina and heading home to NJ. My in-laws moved down here last year and after a cruise from Charleston, we stayed to visit them for a week with our kids. While doing some research on things to do in the area I came across The Kindred Mailbox. I struggled to take the time out of our day to devote to this walk, but I kept coming back to it for some reason. And I am so glad that I did. My husband and I took the drive. We parked right by the 38th street public beach access. First, it is a beautiful and uncrowded beach. Second, the walk to the mailbox is very nice and actually helps you relax before you get there. So take your time on the walk... don't rush. Third, when you finally reach the mailbox, as simple as it is... It is also breath taking. It is almost like a blessing to see the red flag raised, open the mailbox, and find a few notebooks and pens. I sat, wrote and just lived in the moment. All of life's problems and worries drained for just a bit. I didn't read anyone else's entries until mine was complete. This is a place of hope and dreams. I am so grateful for those who maintain this and I plan to visit the library one day to read more entries ... maybe even ours.
Definitely worth the walk. Worth the time. And soul filling, even if just for a few moments.

Great walk to find a hidden place that I had seen on NC Weekend. It took me longer than I anticipated, but I am glad I went! I was most excited to be the only person there at the time.

By Michael H |

It's about 1.5 miles down the beach- far enough to get away from the crowds. Nice little bench to sit on and reflect. Worth the walk.

If you are ever in Southern NC or Northern SC you must take a trip to the Kindred Spirits mailbox located on Bird Island on Sunset Beach. It was made famous by the Nicholas Sparks bestseller, Every Breath, in which the mailbox plays a vital part in the book. The mailbox, however, was there long before his story was written. It is so great to first read the book and discover some of the power being Kindred Spirits and then make the visit. The walk or bike ride (I chose to bike it) is about 1.5 miles or so. So that makes it about a 3 mile round trip. If you can't do that physically then this is not the activity for you; there is no other way out there other than walking it or riding. I rented my bike across the street from the pier which is on the end of 25th street I believe. It was a small ice cream place that rents old bikes for $5 an hour. Plan on two hours and you will be fine. Sunset beach is absolutely stunning. One of the nicest beaches on the east coast in my opinion. The mailbox though is the main attraction here. It is filled with random writings from people like you and I. Much of the writings are very emotional and include topics that have to deal with loss, relationships, love, happiness, children, parents, meaning of life, etc. Because the writings are from common folk they tend to resonate with all of us. You will absolutely find something that just tugs on your heart strings. It is almost impossible not to. It is just such a powerful experience. If you have never been try to set at least an hour to read your fill. You could stay much longer if you choose. The mailbox itself is overseen by a group of volunteers and the journals appear to be refreshed every month or so. There is enough reading material for three to five people at a time. When I was there on a beautiful February afternoon, I came across about 4 other people in the hour that I was there. I did an hour of reading and was very satisfied. This will be an annual stop on my month in Myrtle Beach every year. I highly recommend.

Love kindred spirit mailbox. It is so nice to be able to write in the journals. Such a beautiful, peaceful beach area.

By Worldtravelerz1 |

If you love to walk on the beach, this is a great destination. Peaceful, quiet part of the beach, lots of sand dollars along the route. Best for early morning or late afternoon. Scenic exercise! If you're in Sunset Beach; it's must do.

I never thought I would write a review of a mailbox but when visiting friends in Sunset Beach, I read all the wonderful reviews which warranted a visit. It was a gorgeous, sunny day. We parked at West 40th street entering the beach at that location turning right away from the pier. It was approximately a 1.5 mile walk on a beautiful sandy beach with the Bird Island protected sanctuary on the right. No homes, just dunes and the ocean. Do not give up, keep on walking, as once you arrive, there is the mailbox with pens and paper and a bench to reflect. It is a beautiful spot, savour the moment and write if you want .... placing your thoughts in the mailbox. Such a simple idea but if you are a "Kindred Spirit" very moving.

By Carolinagurl9 |

I have been coming to Sunset Beach all of my life and I make it a point to make it to the mailbox each trip. Now that I live here, I make very frequent trips there. It's awesome to sit and read the journals of those that have stopped before you. It's a long walk or a short trip by bike but you should not miss it on your trip to Brunswick County! šŸ’œ

By Mallorie B |

Second year in a row we walked to the Kindred Spirit Mailbox. Sweet sentiments written on a beautiful coastal view. Definately worth the walk. (Actually, we rode our bikes)

By Shannon |

When I first heard about the Kindred Spirit mailbox, I didn't get it. "So there's a mailbox... out in the middle of nowhere and you leave a message?" Yep.
While there is literally nothing more to it than that, it's a charming notion that people leave some of the most personal thoughts and wishes in a mailbox to no where. Kinda like the "message in a bottle" idea. Anyway, it's still a nice excuse to take a walk down an undeveloped part of the coast. The walk from the 3 way stop sign on Sunset Boulevard to the mailbox is about 2.25 miles 1 way so it's quite a walk. Pen and paper can be found in the mailbox but bug spray cannot and the bugs are bad at times. Afterwards, buy a suvinier of the occasion at Sunset Beach Trading Company.

By denver60 |

We enjoyed this walk along the virtually secluded beach - it is approximately a 3 mile walk, round trip to Bird Island. The soft, white sand dunes are striking, early morning caw of the gulls and sound of the surf completes the experience.

By Buccomom |

Worth the walk! So serene and beautiful! There are benches to sit on and see the ocean and marsh! Bring water and your camera! Love it! We will be back!

By Gladys A |

I learned of the mailbox from reading "every breath" by Nicholas Sparks. The romantic idea of this mailbox made me want to go and see it for myself. The walk was 1.5 miles and it was one of the relaxing walks I have had. Sunset Beach is gorgeous and very wide and flat. This made the trip all worthwhile!!!

By MBChemist |

Kindred Spirit Mailbox is a long walk south from the southern-most beach access of Sunset Beach. In spite of the walk, the meaning behind the location can be spiritual and heart-warming. This location has hundreds of visitors a month and the messages left here are archived. Enjoy your walk and the search for this wonderful place.

By Jennifer K |

If you like walking the beach, getting to the Kindred Spirit mailbox is a must for walking Sunset Beach. It is located about a two mile walk from 40 th street beach entrance.
It is very peaceful with a bench to sit and watch the sea. Leaving a special message in one of the note pads inside the mailbox has been done for 40 years. Enjoy every minute.

By Betty R |

On probably the coldest day in January 2016 my husband and I (both seniors) decided to take the walk to the Kindred Spirit Mailbox. We layered our clothing and took our Nordic poles and headed down the beach. It was a wonderful day. Happy to make it to the mailbox. If we are fortunate enough to go back next year, I hope to do it again.

By DjCraig95 |

We walk over to Bird Island every time we stay at Sunset Beach and it's a ritual to walk over to the mailbox and place mail in it.

By CZiegler04 |

My friends and I had talked about visiting the Kindred Spirit Mailbox, and with today being overcast and not ideal for relaxing on the beach, we decided to make the pilgrimage. We could not have chosen a better day! It’s roughly 1.5 miles and an easy walk on the beach. It was peaceful and I would suspect much less crowded than a typical holiday weekend so we chose wisely for our first visit. The parking options are limited, but don’t let that deter you from enjoying this local favorite.

By Holly @ LoveAtFirstSite.blog |

We took the 1.5 mile walk to the mailbox today. My 94 year old grandma asked me to find it one day when we were in the area. She had read about it. I immediately had to read the Nicholas Sparka book after hearing of it. Talking the trip to it today was a great experience. To see it in person was truly moving. To see many other people stopping to read the notes within and share emotion. It was great. I will be sending the photos of it back home to my grandma.

I love the beach and the fact that this beach has a mailbox made my trip worthwhile. Such a memorable moment for me. It was worth the walk and time. I will definitely be back!

Terrific walk down bird island to the Kindred Spiritis Mailbox. Take your time while walking down to the mailbox and explore all that bird island has to offer

By J H |

Wonderful walk to the mailbox. Everyone must do it and take the time to read a couple of the letters and leave one from yourself also.

By Kathy M |

To be fair....I never made it to the mailbox....there was 5 parking spots.... 5!!!! An attraction that was publicized everywhere down there and had 5 parking spots....absolutely ridiculous!!

By DenS2803 |

Walking the 1.4 miles on the beach to the Kindred Mailbox gives much time for reflection and contemplation of life. When you finally arrive and begin to read the writings of others in the journals, your thoughts and emotions begin to pour out in your addition to the journals. It is a moving experience and recommended to all who visit the Sunset Beach area.

By Sugar Magnolia |

Been twice, once catching the amazing Sunset sunset.
Great for a wind down after a long day at the beach.

By Momsully7 |

The kindred spirit has quite the background. It is about a 40 minute walk from the sunset pier (it can be longer if you are searching for shells.) once you get there you will not be disappointed. You can sit and read journal entries that can range from pulling your heart strings to making you laugh. I encourage everyone to just write what you are feeling in the moment.

By SoSaMN |

It's about a mile and a half walk. Seems like forever but well worth it! Go check it out. Very relaxing to be able to walk along the beach. Also it's exciting to be able to write your own entry in the journal and being able to read some others. Very peaceful place and well respected!

By L M |

I go to Sunset beach many times as I live close part of the year. You have to walk about 1.25 miles from the last beach access #42 I think to get to the mailbox, and to be honest the first few times I went, I was sure I missed it. Please take the time to go, it is peaceful and the stories that are written are heartfelt and special. I go at least twice a year, and it brings me peace and a feeling of holiness somehow just being there.

Our group of 3 couples rented a pontoon boat for the afternoon. Fortunately some of our friends knew about Bird Island and so we dropped anchor and waded our way to the island. There were lots of boats with people splashing and playing in the water and relaxing on the beach. We then took a short hike to the opposite side of the island where we found the Kindred Spirit Mailbox. Once we arrived, we found the notebooks and pens and enjoyed reading passages left by others and then enjoyed some self reflection time. It was a unique little adventure enjoyed by us all!

By Susan W |

It's a great walk to Kindred Spirits mailbox and a beautiful place to sit and reflect. You can leave a comment or essay if you would like in the notebook enclosed in the mailbox. For some it is a cathartic way to express a loss or a celebration in life.

By Carol B |

A 1.4mile lovely beach walk from where we parked car at end of town.
Sunset Beach voted 4th best beach in the world.
Sand dollars galore. Then the mailbox is located on sand dune where you can compose a verse or 2 in the notebooks

By Kazie1 |

This is a must if visiting Sunset Beach, NC!! You walk the West End Entrance to the beach. Head right towards the West sunset. It is about a mile walk.. So beautiful... Beach that rivals the beauty of St. John, Carribbean but right here in America!! On your right look carefully and after about a mile you will see a black post ottice box. That is Kindred Spirit! Open the box and collect the notebook, Write something from your heart and return notebook to mailbox. Smile... Life is good!

By James B |

It's a long walk but when you get to the mailbox you will find a notebook with lots of short stories written by the thousands of vistors who make this walk each year. You can also add you story or a brief note on any thought you would like to write. Be sure to take your cell phone or camera and take a selfie for a remberance. Enjoy!

By Ron B |

Volunteers work tirelessly to inform anyone interested in Bird Island and the story of Kindred Spirit Mailbox. The history and need for preservation of this natural wonder and habitat is so interesting. The sand dunes survival and structure playing a vital part in the beach eco system. Beautiful and Spectacular! Thanks to all the volunteers for their knowledge, hard work, and genuine love and effort

By Barbara P |

Wonderful early morning walk from The Sunset Inn. Shared in the notebook and took in the peaceful view. Each of us had our quiet moments there -- there is seating. One can read others' writings, if one so desires.

By TXDavid937 |

Four mile round trip by foot down the beach from the pier, this amazing little spot is not serviced by US Post Office but you can share your thoughts, wishes, prayers and comments in a journal in the box. Someone maintains the box and there is a simple bench--a cool place to visit in solitude or with someone special. This place is at the other end of experience spectrum from Disney World and the price is right.

By Daniel C |

The mail box has been seen on World News tonight! The idea of leaving notes and reading others is pretty cool especially on such a beautiful beach as SUNSET!

By mark f |

From the 40th street entrance, it'seems about a 3 mile round-trip to the mailbox along a beautiful beach with nice dunes. At the mailbox is a bench and a notebook to put your thoughts. There are no facilities or shade along the walk.

By ladypoint |

For anyone looking for a truly unique experience you can not miss the Kindred Spirit mailbox
Whether you are looking to cleanse your soul, shout from the rooftop, or simply reflect on life's experiences- this is the place to do it
The journal can be as cathartic as you need it to be or you can simply set your reflection onto the dunes and ocean
Truly a magical place

By Conny B |

When I read Nicholas Sparks book Every Breath I knew I had to someday see this mailbox. Less than 6 months later we added the stop on our road trip to see family. I was not disappointed. We’ll worth what I measured on Strava as a 1.8 mile hike from the pier. The walk was easy at low tide with flat sand. The mailbox was easy to locate too although we did not see an American flag as some mentioned. The area is beautiful and it truly felt spiritual there. I wasn’t sure if I would write anything and if so, what it would be, but the words were easy and I filled a page and a half. I hope to make the trip again sometime.

By opti360 |

We didn’t park by 40th like other reviewers recommended. We parked in the public lot by the pier by the restrooms. It was a great walk to the mailbox. About 4 miles round trip from where we parked which may seem lengthy but this beach is SO clean and SO nice. Way nicer than MB where we felt comfortable walking barefoot the whole time.
By the mailbox we met some charming and friendly people from Denmark, Texas and NC. Loved reading some of the notes left by my fellow kindred spirits. Thanks to all that write and share a peace of their soul with the world. I left a couple notes myself. If you stop at the Sunset Beach Trading shop before or after they have several books on the topic. I’ll definitely return someday.

We have been to Kindred Spirit Mailbox many times and were concerned it would not be there after Hurricane Matthew. We had taken my brother and his two adult children in August and continue to be amazed at the beauty and mindfulness this place offers. We saw some erosion to the dunes, but found Kindred Spirit in place yesterday to leave a message. We are grateful to whoever tends to the mailbox. All new notebooks since the hurricane...so thankful to be able to be there one more time.

By Ruth Ann O |

I absolutely loved visiting the Mailbox. Be sure to take several bottles of frozen water and dress appropriately. Sunscreen is also a must. I read all four spiral notebooks and left a note of my own. The two mile hike was beautiful, but the climb on the small sandy hill to the Mailbox could be challenging for some. I'm 65, and I would do this again. Go early and park as close to 40th street as possible. Parking is free, and you can park at the pier, but the walk will be longer.

By SherriThacker |

The Kindred Spirit is a special place to visit when you go to Sunset Beach. This is a place you don’t want to miss!! We went on a Saturday in July around 10:30 and all 6 free parking spots were taken so we went back to the pier parking which was also full. They have a parking lot right next door and it’s $10 to park. It was a 35 min walk from 40th Street (we were dropped off and then one of us parked). There were 4 notebooks inside with many pens to write your deepest thoughts. Some were very moving and some just wrote their name. It’s based on Nicholas Spark’s book Every Breath. I highly recommend this.

By Richard K |

I use this mailbox found on an isolated beach as the inspiration for my Facebook group, Best Nation News. You have time to ponder what is really important in your life as you stroll the beach to share your thoughts,YOUR thoughts with folks you don't know and will never meet. And you can read of those thoughts that came before you. In this fast paced world it's good to be grateful and thoughtful. The Kindred Spirit brings out this in those willing to wander.

By Pamela N |

Enjoyed reading the heartfelt emotions people wrote. Also enjoyed leaving a note for others to read. It is thanks to Nicholas Sparks book Every Breath that I found out about this hidden gem! It is a good distance ( a little over a mile) but when you see an American flag, you will be close and will soon see it. Don't park at the main beach parking. Park at second ramp access. You will see a bush decorated with shells with kindred spirit written on them. Very beautuful place!

By Kelly S |

If you're visiting Sunset Beach or any of the surrounding South Brunswick Islands communities make sure to take a walk to Kindred Spirit.

By Carol H |

Kindred Spirit is great. There are notebooks there where you can write down your thoughts at the time. I heard that the books are collected and put in storage somewhere.

By gatorgal1972 |

I have been walking to the Mailbox for many years. It's a little bit of a hike but worth the energy. Some years, I leave happy notes -like the year my daughter got married here at the beach. Some years, I pour out all the sadness in my heart. It's a private little nook where you can go to think, dream, relax...whatever!

By obidi |

We loved our week at Sunset Beach with our son and his family. We all took the free nature walk to the Kindred Spirit Mailbox and our grand twins left notes in the box. Great family hike and we learned about sea turtles and sea shells along the way. The mailbox is a special place. The hike takes a good hour stopping along the way for talks then walking back. Parking is a challenge so leave early. Some took pre-written messages in envelopes to leave in the mailbox.

By Erin S |

It’s overwhelmingly beautiful in its simplicity. So glad I went. I will go back for serenity every time I’m in the area. <3

By Atraveller0511 |

When I came to visit this area, I read stories about Mailboxes here; almost like local folklore. So when read about Kinred Spirit, I was intrigued by it. Look a long walk to the mailbox and left note.

By Julie W |

It was really worth waking to Kindred Spirit, but it's hard to find. Park as far to the right of the pier as you can. Take a footpath to the beach and start walking to the right for a loooooong time. Almost to the end of the island (it took me 35 minutes walking at a good clip), you'll come to the Kindred Spirit. Leave a message in one of the many notebooks inside the box. Pens are furnished. Be warned -- no businesses, no bathrooms -- yikes!

By D. Passino |

On my drive I was thinking about my true love/soul mate. Certain songs came on the radio that had special meaning. I knew that instant that he was with me in spirit! As I made the walk up to the Kindred Spirits Mailbox I took a notebook, sat on the bench, and started writing. As the wind blew I could feel the presence of him. I got up and noticed a sea shell next to me on the bench and I knew he was there with me! This adventure was on Bucket List and I am so glad I got the opportunity to go. Beautiful place!

By Diana B |

It was a beautiful walk down the beach from 40th and Main. We could see ships coming into the ocean from the other side of the jetty. Beach is beautiful. Was disappointed to see all of the political post and negativity towards COVID. Ignored them and moved on as that was not needed at this special place.

By PineappleCasserole |

Very cute, quirky attractions. Definitely worth the short hike on the beautiful beach. A lot of friendly locals. I found out about it from a book and read about how to find it on roadside america.

By Joy Todd B |

Love sunset beach so beautiful and glad to complete my Nicholas Sparks weekend everyone was so nice.

By stefeee89 |

This is a long walk from 40th street beach access but so worth it. My husband and I took our bikes at low tide and rode to the mailbox. If you enter the beach from 40th street, you will go right about 1.5 miles. There is a sign. If you have read Nichols Sparks book you will love visiting!

By T M |

Maybe you've read about it. If not, Google it and get the full story.
The Kindred Spirit Mailbox is located in the dune, on the beach, in sight of Little River Inlet at the NC / SC state line. People from all over come here to enjoy the walk and the view of the ocean.
When you get here, there is a bench to rest on before continuing on. Inside is a notebook where you can leave your thoughts just as hundreds have done before you.

By Dkline18 |

Worth the walk, lovely view, and memory to share with your loved ones. Leave a note, snap some pictures, you’ll be happy you did.

By IrishTwin5211 |

I have loved all my visits to the mailbox. It’s beautiful there. It’s always so interesting to read the things people have written. I definitely recommend a visit!!

By Michelle L |

I was really looking forward to visiting the mailbox. It was very cool. A long walk but worth it. Such a neat idea!

By JEREMY L |

My family and I walked to the mailbox. It is a long walk, but very enjoyable and worth your time. We read some of the entries.

By WhitneyMcq |

This was magical! Loved the peaceful mile walk Bessie bird sanctuary to get to the lovely mailbox. We spent 30 min reading and writing and left feeling inspired and connected to those who have to come to the mailbox.

Notebooks and pens are provided. Free parking on street by edge of bird sanctuary.

By Beachcomb_33 |

A must-see in my book. I will admit it was a bit of a walk to find it, but it is there. Looking at the pier, go right and walk about a mile or longer. The mailbox is set up on a dune. There is a bit of a hill to walk up, but it's not bad. The mailbox is surrounded by two benches. It is a great place to sit and reflect on what you chose to write in the notebook inside the kindred spirit mailbox. It's a cool place to visit.

By mez824 |

Left my most heartfelt note with one of the Kindred Spirit notebooks. A beautiful walk of about 2 miles from Sunset Beach pier.

By Chris K |

We started walking to the Kindred Spirit at the last beach access point on Sunset Beach. As you walk the boards you will pass trees that are adorned with giant sanddollars with messages on them. We did not expect this but were moved by all of the messages. We started off at around 6:30pm. By the time we reached the mailbox the sun just started to set over the dunes. Bring bug spray if you go in the later afternoon, there were tiny knats everywhere around the bench next to the mailbox. This whole experience was truly worth the walk. You will not regret it.

By Rosalind P |

Read about this in Georgann Eubanks' wonderful travel book Literary Trails of Eastern North Carolina so decided to visit this unusual "attraction". We parked at the end of 40th and Main Street in Sunset Beach - not a lot of parking, but some parking also allowed parallel to the road - it must, however, be really busy there in season. Walked the boardwalk to the beach and turned right and walked on and on over the sands. We nearly missed it (it is up on the dunes just beyond a notice for a Nature Trail on Bird Island - if you reach the jetty, you have gone too far) but some other folks were seated there and we walked up. Lovely to read some of the thoughts that folks have left behind in the mailbox and feel inspired to write your own.

By Candy F |

Looking for some peace and quiet! Need a place to to and reflect on life? You will not find anything more beautiful on the East coast than the walk to the Kindred Spirit. Locals spend endless hours and money to protect this beach and if you will quickly see why. Writing in the journals will truly bring you peace.

By Melissa H |

After finishing the book by nicholas sparks, I wanted to see this mailbox. I went early morning and did the trek from the pier. For me, the walk was beautiful peaceful and spiritual. There were notebooks in the mailbox for people to write whatever moves them. I highly recommend this!!

By hummyJ |

I love to walk Sunset Beach. The mailbox is a good walk from the pier and has benches to sit and read or write in the journals or just take a break.

By Lori O |

Our hotel mentioned the mailbox in passing and we knew we had to experience it! It was about a mile and a half each way and it can only be reached walking. What a magical thing. So glad we were told about it.

By Veronica G |

Great beach, beautiful area to walk, and once to mailbox a time to write your thoughts/feelings in one of the journals inside the mailbox, or to read comments of others who shared their thoughts.

By Crystal0466 |

My first trip to the mailbox was a few years ago and I was glad to see that is survived the 2016 hurricane. Although a bench is missing and a new mailbox is in place, it is still the same experience. The walk from the 40th street access is long so just keep going and don't worry about missing it. Just keep walking and enjoy the view along the way. The beach is quiet with beautiful dunes and you may even find a sand dollar or two along the way. The spirit of the mailbox is why you make the trek and it's just a serene experience to sit on the bench and take a few minutes to write what's on your heart. Be respectful if others are there but don't pass up the opportunity. It's worth the walk and the experience and you'll want to come back again and again.

We have been coming to this mailbox for years. Every time is magical. Last year my son just happened to be there when a couple got engaged and snapped their photo. This year we went back and guess who was there? The same couple from last year. Was this mystical? Oh yes. The best place to sit, write, relax, enjoy the view and escape the hustle and bustle. I love this place.

It's about a mile and 3/4 or so from Sunset Beach entrance on a beautiful beach to the mailbox. Here you can sit down on a bench and review hundreds of travelers and locals thoughts about the beach, themselves and all kinds of things from prose to poetry and you can write something to leave for others to view.

Absolutely amazing experience! Well worth the long hot walk along the beach! Make sure to spend some time reading the journals...so inspirational. Many are tear-jerkers...but in a good way.

This has a neat story behind it. The walk is a good walk down the beach. Starting at 40th Avenue it is a good 45 minutes walk to the mailbox. Just enjoy the walk and the ocean. It is well worth the walk. It is very peaceful.

The walk to the Kindred Spirits mailbox is worth the time. Go in the early morning and enjoy the peace & quiet. I love seeing the people walking their dogs. It's also a great place to look for sand dollars.
Once you get to the mailbox, give anyone who is sitting a writing the time to finish and then have a seat and had your own submission to the notebook. Maybe you want to leave a note for your kindred spirit or just share your thoughts.
A wonderful tradition and one you're sure to want to continue once you've been.

Stop here to read the thoughts of folks of all ages, generally what they are thankful for - which is lovely time spent. A retreat in itself. Worth the walk!

By Christy J |

This is definitely worth the walk and there is a bench that you can sit on when you get to the mailbox. The beach is also very nice, clean and undeveloped on this end of the island!

By PLsimmons |

After finishing the book by nicholas sparks, i wanted to see this mailbox. So moving, the letters in the notebook - its hard to explain- real experiences documented written by real people. I am so glad we did this- it was 97 degrees that day but take your time and look for all the footprints leading to the dunes/mailbox. You will be glad that you took the time. We went to 40th street and had to circle the block to find parking, but worth the effort- especially if you read the book!

Went to Sunset for the second time but to the mailbox gor the 1st time. The walk from the Pier is close to 3 miles (appx) but a nice walk

It is an opportunity for reflection in the peace and solitude of nature. For a few minutes you get to tell the world what you really feel about your life or anything else you want to share in private

There is a notebook and pens available for your use

Enjoy!

Awesome walk along the beach enjoying the sound of the waves and watching nature.once you reach the mailbox, open it up grab a notebook and write your feelings.Enjoy reflecting from this peaceful place.PS Bring a bottle of water with you

Couple miles down the beach on bird island. My family, friends and I have been going for years. It is so special that my wife asked that her ashes be spread there—and we kept her wish

I had read about this mailbox in the Nicholas Sparks book entitled "Every Breath" and decided that I had to see it, especially since it is relatively near where I live. My husband and I went in January, on a cold, windy and sunny day, which was perfect because hardly anyone else was on the beach with us.

We finally reached the mailbox after a 1.4 mile walk. As we walked up the steep hill, we saw the notebooks and pens in the box for users to write entries. The view was spectacular. Both of us sat on the bench and wrote for a bit, as well as reviewed some of the entries in the books.

The whole experience was cathartic, peaceful, uninterrupted and beautiful. The best part was that no one else was there so we could immerse ourselves in the spirit in the mailbox with no other people to ruin it.

This is a great stroll for couples. I suggest wearing shoes for this walk. Don't go barefoot. The site has a couple of benches to view the scenery or read the journal entries. Your own entry is always welcome. Best times to go are before sunset and right before sunrise.

Had a great afternoon walking to the Kindred Spirit Mailbox on the beach. What a great feeling when I arrived to see the bench and mailbox. Had a opportunity to write in the notebook that was i the mailbox. An awesome time to sit peacefully and reflect on life past, present and future. Thank you so much.

By Laura K |

Great idea, Kindred Spirit! What a great way to get some exercise and think as you walk. Then you come to a mailbox on the beach that has pen and paper so you can record your thoughts,,,awesome!

By K F |

We enjoyed walking to the Kindred Spirit Mailbox. It's good to know that there are places so peaceful and people are respectful of the concept of this mailbox. Kudos to all that take care of the area.

By Jessica |

More than the mailbox, we enjoyed the walk along the quiet beach. We actually missed it on our walk and found it after we had returned from past the jetty. Beautiful sights!

By CFI1985 |

Although this is almost a five mile walk from the pier at Sunset beach it is worth every step. One of the most beautiful and peaceful places I have ever been . Its almost like your on your own private beach . Great spot to reflect on what in life is really important .

By NDrakatos |

This was on my list because of the Nicholas Sparks novel called Kindred Spirit. Not so easy to find but worth it.

By Dena S |

The KS mailbox is a special place to visit when you go to Sunset Beach. I enjoyed reading the notes that were written. Some happy and some sad. It was very peaceful just to sit and read. But it is so worth the walk. It is a long walk so be sure to take water to drink.

By MominOC |

after an hour we gave up. Suggest you ask around the town or research online maybe to cut down on mistakes and disappointment. Plan to walk a lot there is not much parking in the area. We will try again whenever we get back to the area hopefully.

By jtf26 |

As it rained for much of my trip to Sunset Beach, I decided to take a few hours when it actually stopped raining for a bit, and walk the beach, and stopped at the mailbox. I have been here several times over the years, and I always feel very spiritual while I stop. I wrote in one of the note books left in the mailbox, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip! So worth a stop!!!

By Kelly S |

The Kindred Spirit mailbox is tucked away in the dunes on one of the prettiest places to walk in the South Brunswick Islands! The west end of the island is a nature preserve so it sees little foot and bike traffic but is a favorite spot for local and visitors to get some exercise or search for shells.

By Erica L |

Some reviews say 3 mile round trip but I believe it's 3 miles, one way (from the pier). Nice to say I've been there but wasn't as special as I had hoped it would be.

By quackers13 |

We rented bikes nearby and rode the 2 miles to the Kindred Spirit mailboxes. Missed it the first time as it is back hidden in the dunes and if you aren’t looking you will miss it. (went to the jetty and walked back two dunes to the mailbox). Glad the jetty was there or we would have gone longer. I had beought a copy of Nicholas Spark’s book to give away and a written a letter to put in the mailbox. Very emotional. Happy that there are benches. Great opportunity for pics. Bring water, bug spray, sunscreen and lots of energy for the walk. (Gnats are abundant). Go early and on weekday if you can. If you park in one of the four spots, don’t miss the sand dollar tree on the walk to the beach.

After reading Nicholas Sparks book, and further reading a book by author, Jacqueline DeGroot, my husband and I decided this would be a nice trip to North Carolina ! ...We went last week, and we walked the 1.5 miles to the Kindred Spirit Mailbox! ....What a beautiful walk ! The beach at Sunset Beach is not heavily populated, is VERY clean, and the walk is very quiet and serene! ...We finally approached the mailbox, and there were several people there waiting for others to spend their time at the mailbox! ....Finally , it was our turn...and we can't say enough about the feeling that we had while there....It was very quiet, tranquil and the presence of God was definitely there! .....You can feel the urge to allow yourself to write in the journal about anything...your pain, health, death of loved ones...anything that is difficult for you to discuss otherwise...I will definitely go back! My husband said that he was very 'moved' my the tranquility of this place!!!

By dfrabon |

Don't miss a walk to the Kindred Spirit Mailbox on Bird Island. About a mile walk on the beach, very relaxing and beautiful. Special place.

By Darlene T |

It's a long walk but worth it..You have to believe...We walk there at least once per month (everytime we are in Sunset)

By BlueHeaven2 |

If you don't go by boat you have to walk about two miles to get there. Not worth it you say! Seriously? Two miles of beautiful pristine beach. Then when you arrive, there is a bench for sitting and reflecting on life or the beauty of the surroundings. There is a notebook for those who make the journey to write in but don't forget to read notes from those who came before you!

By Lori M |

It was fun finding the mailbox. I read online that you can find it easily by looking for the flag. Well, the flag is down, but we still found the mailbox. Idyllic location too.

By Jay H |

If you are into experiences that will warm your heart, this is it. After reading Every Breath by Nicholas Sparks, I was drawn to the mailbox. My husband and I have gone twice and hope to go again. The walk on the beach to the mailbox is beautiful as is
the little community of Sunset Beach. There are other novels based on the mailbox which I hope to read. Also many articles on internet.

By parsch2016 |

When you come out onto the beach walk in a westerly direction (turn right). The walk is great...Watch for turtles, birds, dolphins and shark fins. When you reach the American Flag that is flying in the breeze you have reached the mailbox. Neat reading on most of the mail. To me, it makes me feel that I'm glad that I'm, alive and that I had the chance to come this way.

By TMZ |

This was a beautiful walk along the beach to this mailbox. It is approximately a 30min walk from the pier and approximately 30 min back depending on how many times you stop to look for treasures. Very beautiful beach one of the nicest beaches I have visited. Would definitely recommend walking here.

By Jen S |

This was such a cool experience. The mailbox is tucked into the dunes...hidden until you're right there. There are 2 benches, allowing you to face the sunset or the sunrise, depending on when you're there. Inside the mailbox are notebook and trinkets left by visitors. We sat and read through the notebooks while the sun came up. It was a really wonderful experience. Far more powerful than I expected.

The Kindred Spirit mailbox is a 1 1/2 mile walk on the beach from the end of Sunset Beach on a place called Bird Island. About 35 years ago the mailbox was set in the dunes for people to write down their thoughts and dreams and leave it in the mailbox. UNC-W collects the contents frequently and catalogs them. You will find a flagpole with an american flag flying, and two benches. Recently a tropical storm blew down the mailbox and a group of Sunset Beach residents bought a new one and set it all back up. It's a wonderful place to just sit and relax and leave something behind in the mailbox if you wish. Well worth the walk!

By Leslie T |

I didn't write a lot, but it looks like a lot of pouring out of one's soul and heart written in these notebooks. I believe it can be a relief for some to bear one's secrets.

The walk to the mailbox and beyond is wonderful....what a beach should be. That is, no houses and real dunes! You can cross into SC at the end of the island.

By Dallasite1 |

We were blessed with a bright sunny day with a slight chill. Many walkers on the beach. Had to wait briefly for some people to finish up at the mailbox, but visitors are conscious and respectful of others. Pleasant experience to relax on the bench and compose some thoughts. And you can take your dog.

By Caroline L |

My husband and I walked to the mailbox and even on down to the jetty. It was a very enjoyable walk. The beach is nice and wide even at high tide. There is no problem getting to the island now that the inlet has filled in with sand. It was a little longer walk than I expected but we took our time and it was very pleasant. Well worth the walk the views the whole way are outstanding. Be sure to cut your distance by going all the way to 40th street. As I said even from there it is quite a hike. Do go even if you do not make it the whole way the beach is gorgeous ( you can always turn around when you get tired). It is so untouched by human expansions.

SunsetBeach is beyond description. Walk to the mailbox, sit on the bench and watch the waves roll in .Write your inner thoughts in the journal found in the mailbox. A place you will never forget !!!!

4 mile round trip walk from 4th Street. Our first visit after many trips to Sunset Beach. Closest facilities are at the pier. So plan ahead to take liquids and for those who don’t use the ocean. šŸ˜‰

By Tracie Bias |

It is worth the long walk, however you need a lot of water on a hot day and when you are almost to the jetty look right and see the most precious view, The Kindred Spirit Mailbox. It is quite a long walk but worth it.

By Hiness58 |

My brother co-owned a home at Sunset for years. He recently passed away. He brought his wife's ashes here 7 years ago. Tomorrow his sons and I will take him to be with her.

Simple mailbox in the dunes that inspires reflection while reading others inspirational thoughts. visited on a cool winter day but had a great walk. Have to see it to feel it.

By rprichied |

My wife and I were on the turtle Patrol and frequent into kindred spirit mailbox many times. There's a flag pole with the American flag flying in the breeze a park bench and of course the mailbox within the mailbox is a book where people can sign their name and read other people that have been to the mailbox it is at the West End Of Sunset Beach and it is a beautiful walk but you will enjoy it

By trico40 |

Peaceful and serene while sitting on the bench and jotting down thoughts, dreams and hopes. What a jewel Bird Island has in the Kindred Spirit Mailbox and the whole concept.

By LizNed55 |

In the middle of nature. A fabulous walk. Calming. Gorgeous sand dunes. Gorgeous beach. Mailbox with benches to sit and reflect on your Kindred Spirit.

By Lynn L |

Until 2020, when I read ā€œEvery Breathā€ the only parts of NC I’ve ever visited were the Outer Banks. But, I knew I needed to visit Kindred Spirits.

So, my friend and I who read the simultaneous decided to see it in person and write a contribution. The walk out it beautiful, there is a bird preserve, so wear sneakers.

The mail box was so nice to visit, and even if you’ve never read Nick Sparks, the town of Sunset Beach was warm and welcoming. Def a place I’d come back to in the future.

By CanoeBee |

A lovely spot to quietly reflect and ponder, and to creatively share one's feelings by putting pen to paper found in the mailbox.

By Jon W |

I'd been wanting to visit since about 15 years ago when I first heard of it. Such a neat idea. I'm guessing the recent storm (Matthew?) did away with the black mailbox, flag & second bench? Still one bench & a new white mailbox though. There was a long rope with a board attached that I couldn't figure out, anyone know the story there?
I was there the day after Christmas & some kind soul had it adorned with holiday cheer!
Great walk & only takes less than 30 minutes one way to get there & darned well worth it! :-)

By Patti |

Last year, about this time, sitting in a hotel room in Mount Airy, N C, following the Billy Joel concert, we watched Nicholas Sparks on GMA, on his book tour with Every Breath. At that time, this trip was planned. We WERE going to the Mailbox. We stayed at Sea Trail Champion Condo's and packed up and made the trek on Wednesday, 9/25. We were not disappointed. We left early in AM, and the walk was very pleasant. Beach area is quiet, tide was out, so lots of hard packed sand and a wonderful ocean breeze. I will definately be back again.

By Deborah K |

Long walk but worth it. It was crowded with visitors even in May so be prepared to wait - especially with social distancing!

By tonyalbisby |

I've been coming to Sunset Beach for over 20 years now and visit Kindred Spirit mailbox to write in the notebooks when we visit. Great place to exercise and write down your innermost feelings alone or with someone special.

By uclamates |

A pleasant 3 mile walk round-trip on a relatively secluded beach brings you to The Kindred Spirit mailbox. We parked as far down in Sunset Beach as possible, then walked from there. Enjoy soft white sand, long beaches and beautiful dunes. It is a heartfelt experience to read what others have left in the notebooks and dig deep within yourself to add something personal. I've been there twice now, most recently bringing my teenage children with me.

By Patricia M |

Choose this spot because friends were golfing in area. Looked up the mailbox and decided to go for it. Cannot believe it is three miles, after I got to the mailbox I continued to the Jetty. I knew it was far, but certainly didn't seem far. Beautiful. Bring a camera, smartphone or whatever. There is something about being near the Kindred Spirit, reading the entries and then writing. Something more than just a mailbox on a post. This beach is just gorgeous, even if the mailbox doesn't have that feeling for you.

By Tina V |

So happy we were able to visit the Kindred Spirit mailbox after the hurricane nearly cancelled our trip to Sunset Beach in September 2018. Ive read several articles about the mailbox and was looking forward to experiencing it for myself. To many, it may seem just like a mailbox in an odd location, but it has a local history all its own and a charm that makes me want to be a part of it. it is mentioned in several novels. Read up on it before visiting. Be aware, you have to walk the beach to get to it, there is no direct access. It’s a good walk, wear sunscreen or pick a strategic time of day to visit so you can sit a while to read and write.
