We have been coming here for years. First with our son and now with our grandson. A really nice nature walk minutes from downtown Rockville.

Have been to Lake Need wood many times since it is one mile from where I live. You can rent a canoe and paddle the entire lake. There are also very nice bike trails you can get on that will take you into DC. I often have brought my dog with me to run around.

I love coming here with my family and dogs. It's a great place for mild hiking and spending time outside. I come here often and it never disappoints. It's pretty and clean, making it a great place to go on the weekends with family.

By pmr2 |

I have walked here several times with my dogs, The trails are leisurely walks, and well-marked. The lake is clear, and beautiful to look at, and it appears to be a great family place with boat rental, picnic tables and grills, and plenty of parking. For me it's just a nice place to get away from the frenetic life of the city and having it so close to home is a major plus.

This park is a good place for hiking, paddle boating, canoeing, and picnics. We have had our annual summer family picnics here for years. The covered picnic table areas are clean and accessible. The bathroom shelters are clean. We pick a picnic site that is next to the swings and the volleyball area. Across the street from the picnic area is a wonderful adventure called "Go Ape" where you can travel through the treetops. The park itself is medium in size and it is worth a visit.

I do not see Lake Needwood in Isolation. It is this and the other Lakes, the Golf Course and the fourteen mile Rock Creek Trail, which I have not traversed completely, but intend to do one of these days. Of course, there are other attractions along the trail once it enters Washington DC. These include another golf course and the vicinity of Washington's "Smithsonian" Zoo - which indicates it is "no-ticket-for-entry zoo. There are open air theaters and many a place for picnicking with grills. One of the more "fun" activity I saw by the Lake recently was the "Battle" between Red and Green Forces of some medieval kingdoms or Knights of some Christian Order (for they had Big Crosses sewn to their attires - complete with (I guess) plastic mail chains. Yep! They were some knights. I suspect these were "gender-sensitive" too as some of the knights wore their blond manes under their helmets, that rolled over on receiving great blows of otherwise harmless swords over the green battlefield (No blood was to be seen). I am not into fishing, but have seen some with their lines. It is a great out-door, just so close to D.C.

Bike trails, picnic stops, boat rental, volleyball courts and even a zip line. A great place to take the kids or to hike/bike. There is a dam that controls the water flow and is also interesting to see. But watch out. There are many deer, hence many ticks and the strong potential for Lyme disease in the woods. And from time to time there are bacterial outbreaks in the lake itself so do not go swimming. A nice place to visit, nevertheless, just be careful.

Enjoyable, comfortable hiking trails around the lake. Slightly rough is some areas, but with your eyes open you will miss the ankle-grabbing roots. Folks are able to navigate baby strollers over the bumps and dips with no problems. Some ducks and geese to commune with, just don't get in their water. Archery ranges available. Nice picnic and play areas for younger set. Zip lines and the like for the adventuresome, plus connection to bike trails to D.C. (I think it's a 14 mile ride)

By Tamah G |

This is a lovely park, with a lake and paddleboats, places to picnic, hiking. There is a larger boat that takes people for a brief tour of the lake. The scenery is great, maybe especially in autumn, although the boats are gone at the end of the summer.

Love Lake Needwood in Rockville! It's a piece of quiet and nature in a busy area. It has so many entrances to trails, a boathouse, fishing, trails, and a playground! The playground has an awesome zip line that kids love. Plenty of room and attractions. Dogs welcome!

By Margarita M |

We had a wonderful time kayaking and watching others paddle boarding. It's a great place to decompress as a couple or even for great quality time as a family.

By Shannon L |

The park was beautiful even though we were unable to go out on the lake. We hiked around the lake and enjoyed an afternoon outdoors with excellent weather. Will definitely return soon!

By Greetings K |

A very nice place to relax !
Suitable for everyone , large or smal....
Especially in watching a beautiful play of color in October.

By manos6232 |

Great woods and trails and swimming lake in the summer -- a good all-round local park, rest rooms, etc

By Goingplaces64 |

Lake Needwood is a great place to walk or hike. Just don't touch the water! It is dangerously polluted.. Seneca Lake is a safer place for tcurious kids.

By 305KMD |

Trails are very walkable and definitely not the beaten path. There are open areas surrounded by trees. Sometimes you can rent pedal boats, but check hours and availability if you wan tto do that. You can bike here, bring a frisbee, bring Fido, or just enjoy walking around. There are benches here and there. You cannot swim here (at least not right now).

You don't hear the traffic of Rockville Pike, and you don't feel like you're in a major suburban area. Nice place for fresh air.

By TooToo6 |

Pretty place. Too bad amplified music is allowed to ruin the experience. Boom box? No offense, but I didn't come to the lake to listen to your music. Can't recommend this place for communing with nature.

High winds prevented the rental of the canoe. Was told that there was no way to control it. I was with 2 minors (13yo's), and it would not be safe. Other boats were rented to other families. Very disappointing.

By Rhonda C |

Luckily I live very close to this treasure. Early morning in the summer, my husband and I love walking the trails and enjoying nature.

By zeathore |

My wife and I walk around lake needwood pretty often as we live nearby. It has nice walking paths and is relaxing.

By adac1121 |

Love to visit this local park, the scenic and boat rides are great; also the path walking around is a peaceful route. There are many sections of the park which served different purpose of visits. Lots of BBQ stops and grills.

By NettaKrisp |

We used to leave close by and visited many times over the past 6 years.
It is good for hiking and biking and boating or kiaking.
Water bacteria problem is making it out if the question for fishing. It can alsi get crowded in weekends.
Good place for family fun.

By Anna B |

We really enjoyed our afternoon and what a pleasant surprise with Gorgeous views and lots to do. Very peaceful atmosphere and lots of things like fishing and zip-lining and renting boats. Kids loved it and so did I

By JennaMarie43 |

Go out to this lake while on summer break! Take a picnic lunch grab a boat ride for cheap while you are there ! Lovely way to spend a hot summer day!!!

By LM F |

I have been kayaking at Lake Needwood for the last few weeks and have really enjoyed the experience. Although there are no signs, when you come through the main entrance, and are at the stop sign next to Go Ape, go right and you'll see the parking spots on your left about 1/2 mile down. It is easy to pull your kayak down to the lake and easy to bring it back up. I usually go in the morning and it is never crowded. If you live close by, it is a great quick place to get in and out of so you can spend more time on the lake.

By mk4526 |

This lake is wonderful for family, friends, or solo. Lots of parking and great views everywhere. I have been going here for over 30 years. Love it!

By Tom B |

I live nearby and have been going here for years. Nice place to get out of the rat race. Take a lunch and enjoy the quiet. Also good for picnics - several charcoal grills scattered throughout and plenty of room to throw a ball around. They used to have a small paddle-wheeler for short boat rides around the lake. I don't know if it exists anymore, maybe in the Spring. They had a boat rental facility last year. Lake is stocked with trout in Spring but fishing is not very good otherwise.

By sisflynn |

There are several kinds of boats for rent on the lake, plus playgrounds for the kiddies, a huge gazebo with grills and tables for family gatherings. And great walking trails. Super family place with convenient parking all around.

By 54jeremiahs |

Great place to visit natures beauty on display, nice lake and u can cook out under picknick tables can play On vines swinging from tree to tree the great view

By Annatraveler_13 |

This is a nice park, so I was super excited to explore the trails. But I won't be back to walk or jog. Ran into a copperhead snake on my third visit - really scary!

By Dayle M |

A great free park with chance to rent canoes, paddle boats, row boats, picnic shelters - uncovered are free for the taking. Beautiful environment for walks as well

By Kshitij S |

The lake is nice with boating and fishing facilities. Ample parking and barbecue points. Worth spending time and relaxing

By Xiangjun D |

The view is good. The trails are good. But the water is not good. Come and enjoy the awesome fall beauty!

By LolaGo1 |

With sunny and warm weather, I decided to drive to and visit this attraction. There were cars at the parking lot but did not see anyone. I walked towards the Lake area and noted the icy water. I enjoyed the fresh/clean air and the beautiful, serene surroundings!

Summer: There are several activities to do here in the Summer time: Fishing, Boating, Hiking, Volleyball games, Hiking, Picnicking, etc.

I will definitely visit here again in the Spring and Summer time!

By Karen M |

Love this place and the staff at the boat rental are so professional, friendly and polite. Beautiful trails and lake.

By Stanley O |

We have been regular visitors for decades, taking dogs, grandchildren and visitors from overseas. A grand place to walk & explore for all four seasons

By Chris T |

Although there are often alot of people there, it is so big you'll never feel crowded. Lot's of places to explore, picninc, and play. We've enjoyed this gem for years and visit in every season.

Normally this would be a five star public park but "Visitors Urged to Use Caution and Avoid Ingesting Water at Lake Needwood Due to Elevated Microcystin Levels.
Microcystin, a toxic substance produced by blue-green algae (cyanobacteria), has been detected in Lake Needwood. Water that contains microcystin can cause severe liver damage if ingested. Please avoid all contact with the lake water, and do not allow dogs or other pets to swim in or drink from the lake. Swimming is prohibited at all times in Lake Needwood." If water activity is your objective, I would recommend Senaca Creek State Park as an alternative.

By Richard H |

My husband, father-in-law, and I walked around a good portion of the path. It truly is hidden in a neighborhood, with lots of trees and places to sit and rest. I got to hear many good stories from locals, such as the time some homes had to be evacuated due to flooding. We took our time and made an entire afternoon of it. I recommend going if you never have.

By Cavalier1994 |

Excellent trails (easy to moderate) that we enjoyed with a dog on a Sunday and the trails weren’t crowded. Highly Recommend the Needwood trail on the eastern side of the lake with its wonderful lakeside vistas and clearly marked trails. On the western side, we recommend the aptly named Westside Trail - this is further from the waters edge but has wider trails with lots of interesting vegetation and occasional views of the lake from a higher elevation. Not the biggest lake by far so you can go around the lake in 1-1.5 hrs. Although technically the trails do not loop around the entire lake on the northern tip, there is a pedestrian sidewalk with barriers next to the road that is outside the park property that people walk across from the west to the east side of the lake, and vice versa. The 3 picnic areas have ample shelters and picnic tables and plenty of accessible parking. We had a terrific time here.

I took my kids here to go paddleboarding. The boat house staff were pretty condescending and were poorly trained teenagers. I was told there was no swimming or wading. This confused me at a lake so I asked three different times if we could at least dip in to cool off or walk in the water on one of the beaches. Each time, the answer was a blunt "no" without explanation. We paid our $5 per board to launch our boats and the staff didn't even bother to move the rental kayaks off the landing they told us to use. We had no room to launch. After going back again to ask them to move the boats, they watched as we waded in the water to get on our boards. They also knew we had our feet in the water and legs as we paddled around. The water looked pretty nasty with clumps of algae everywhere. Turns out there was a valid reason for not being allowed in the water. It's potentially TOXIC! We did a little digging after our trip and found out that this lake has been contaminated with toxic blue algae for the last 7 years. There were no signs posted and the staff never once mentioned the possibility of the water being dangerous. A news article from last year said to avoid direct contact with the water. We all got wet and we all had our feet in the water (it's kind of hard NOT to on paddleboards, which the staff not only knew about but watched as we got on our boards). I called the director the next day and they did a little looking to determine if the lake has reached dangerous levels yet. They currently don't THINK it's dangerous but as I told him, shouldn't the staff have told me at least once out of the 3 times I asked that the reason there is no swimming or wading was the potential for dangerous bacteria?? That would've been a pertinent piece of information that would definitely have changed our decision to take the family on a lake where we were definitely going to come in direct contact with the water. We will never go back and as for the rest of the lake, it was pretty small and I guess it's ok for fishing if you don't mind the possibility of contamination? Never again. I do not recommend. Rude staff, small lake, & dangerous water.

By Christina R |

I grew up a few minutes from here and it has always been a great place to visit for kids, families, and even just to hang out on a nice day. Not too busy to go jogging or hiking. They have paddle boats and canoes for rent as well.

By Mary M |

I have grown up visiting this place, and I just love it here. My favorite time to visit is in the spring. I love to see all the beautiful animals.

By Brand-A-Images |

Being new in the area, we discovered Montgomery Co Park District, Lake Needwood. Excellent trails circle the lake allowing about a 2-3 mile loop. Currently, we found part of the trail was closed for reconstruction but we did not mind doubling back to our start point. A great fall hike. We used the Avery Rd entrance and passed by a commercial climbing ropes and Zip Line facility here in the park named "Go-Ape", but we did not try it. Perhaps in the summer.

By inWoodbridge |

There are many things to do, hike, picnic, sports, etc. This is a great place to gather the family for a cookout.

By Mamajogger |

Needwood is a beautiful park in which to jog, hike, picnic, or enjoy water sports. It offers cooler paths in summer heat.

By Elisa S |

We like to take the bike trail that leads to this place. Very idyllic and shadowed most of the time. The lake area is very relaxing after the ride. We usually pack a light picnic and it and rest there before heading back.

By TheDoctorsCompanion |

Nice scenery, golf nearby. Trails and a lake, as well as other opportunities for fun. Not sure if rafts can be taken.

By Stanley D |

You can hike completely around the lake, although there are places without a clear trail. This is a nice place for gatherings.

By bagnato1 |

We are regulars at Lake Needwood. This is not a complicated walk. But it is a nice 1-1 1/2 stroll, with some short trail offshoots to add to the journey. Paddle boats are offering for rental on the pleasant lake. Lots of picnic facilities, too.

By rcbjr |

It's a great place to spend a couple of hours with your family or even alone. It has beautiful trails (paved and natural) that goes around the lake. You can rent a paddleboat or bring your own small set-up.

By Cleverly C |

We went Kayaking at Lake Needwood and loved the experience. We saw a snake in the rocks by the water. The staff was nice and the views were lovely. The rain held off until after we kayaked and it was fun for the entire family. My kids are 9 and they rode with my husband and I. I think this would be a lovely family trip for anyone. It would also be fun for friends or couples. I would definitely visit again.

By RickWestlake |

This park has been part of my life since I moved into the Rockville area in 1985 ... I've gone hiking, bicycling and cross-country skiing, plus I've taken my kayak there in summer months; and we held my Mom's memorial service in the pavilion overlooking the lake. It's a huge park, close to the headwaters of Rock Creek, and wild enough for your kids' Peter Pan fantasies. (I haven't tried the Go Ape! zip-line trail, but I'm more into sailing nowadays and that takes me out to the Chesapeake Bay.)

By VeraGl |

Lake Needwood is my favorite place for a walk with my dogs. About 2.5 miles walk around the lake is very easy, though it does have a couple of inclines. The view of the lake and nature is superb! The place is moderately visited during the weekend, though it is difficult to describe it as crowded at any time. During the week days it is as tranquil and quiet as one can imagine. The trail is suitable for walking or biking. During the warm season for affordable price one can rent a paddle catamaran, small row boat or kayak to spend some time on the water. Dogs are allowed to be on the water with you, but you have to provide them with your own floating gear if you chose so. The park has several places for picnics. Do not try to park your car though in not designated spaces. The park police is there for you at all times!
Highly recommended place to visit and relax.

By Debbie N |

Sponsored by the Montgomery County Department of Police- annual event - good time for a great cause. Proud to participate with my co- workers.

By MDMensch |

We’ve been to Lake Needwood several times, and have found it to be overrun with activity and less intimate than we normally like. . .

To address this, we decided NOT to drive into the park or bike on the northbound trail that has been our normal course. Instead, we parked at True Respite Brewery off E. Gude Drive and hiked the hilly 1.25-mile long trail to the southeast side of the Lake, which places you on a shaded trail away from the hustle and bustle of weekend family picnics. IT WAS WONDERFUL. After the hike, you can also visit the True Respite Brewery and keep your unconventional outing going in the unassuming office park you started from.

By MKJourneys |

Nice size park to hike, bike, boating, picnic, etc. We spent a fun day boating (paddleboat and kayaks) with the family. The park was filled with families, teenagers, biking groups and folks just chillin'. Nice place to spend a nice relaxing summer day....

By RichardJPeppin |

Easy to get to, away from most noise, and clean. The lake is a pleasure to visit. Places to picnic and relax and trails to walk.

By trinigirlmd |

DH and I like to take walks in Lake Needwood on weekends in the spring and fall when it's a bit cooler. There are two sides -- one hike takes you up and into the trees and the other side takes you by a little brook and over a bridge. It's the perfect spot to catch up with each other when the weekdays are hectic.

By Jennifer H |

Helped the dad of these little guys catch some fry by the bait shop. He was such a hero to them that I gave him my Pautzke balls of fire when I left! Awesome fishing trip!

By Grandna W |

Beautiful Park. Lots of walking paths. Boat rental is seasonal. Lots of geocaches available. Fun for whole family.

By janethO7040KW |

We went to Lake Needwood several times over the course of a few months. It was really pretty in the winter when it was iced over and no one was there to walk around. When we went back in the summer we watched Renniciance dulls or fights that was awesome!

By elissa s |

loved the kayaks! lots of fun! go early on a sunday or anytime weekday. fun watching the activity on the lake.

By katwomansz |

Been to this lake before.
Today we were greeted by a bunch of brawling renaissance men and women that definitely added to the scenery.

By Jay A |

This is a great park for runners who want to go somewhere slightly different but still reasonably safe. The trails aren't frequented much during the daytime so be aware of your surroundings. It's a beautiful place to run and enjoy great scenery. The "trail" breaks a bit at the bottom of the lake which probably could be remedied with a better bridge and more dedicated trails. But that's nitpicky. You'll enjoy your run here, and there's paddleboats for the kids in the summer.

By drbking |

Lake Needwood features boats for rent, trails to walk or ride, and places for a nice picnic. On summer weekends it can get quite crowded, but on an autumn or winter day, it's a beautiful place for some solitude.

By KGupman |

I run an annual 5K in this park (soo hilly!). But it also has bike trail, canoe rentals, secluded picnic shelters with grills for parties, a Go Ape! zip line and canopy tour area; archery range. Nice place to go with the kids, or for a relaxing walk.

By kbmgroup |

Lake needwood is great. You have the lake which allows you to paddle boat or just enjoy the view. A few people fish. There are spots for the little ones to play. There is ziplining and hiking. There is pretty much something for everyone.

By Tsaiyuin F |

Kitsi and I love to walk around the Lake. It is a nice hike...a few miles...around. Some parts are shady, some are open and sunny. If you want to boat, there are launches and boat rentals. We took the dog in a rowboat once. There is a trail into Rock Creek Park that is about 3 or 4 miles that comes out near Twinbrook. There are covered bbq sites, volleyball sand courts, and even a zipline.

By LolaGo1 |

There are so many things to do at the Park and Lake Needwood for everyone, young and old alike. There are Picnic Sheds and Barbecue Grills for cookouts, Lake for boating and fishing, Zip line for those seeking thrills and adventures, Archery area for those wanting to practice their skills, and Trails (covered by verdant trees) for walking, hiking and jogging.

Located just outside Lake Needwood areas are the Needwood Mansion and the Golf Course for those wanting to play golf. There are many trees in the Park and Lake Needwood so one feels that she is out in the country and not in the busy suburbs of 'Rockville and Gaithersburg.

I highly recommend a visit to the Park and Lake Needwood for everyone. You would feel refreshed and energized after your visit. Spend the day there, enjoy and relax!

Note that there are fees to be paid for the sheds/barbecue grills, Zip Lines, and boat rides. These fees are needed to help maintain the Park and Lake Needwood. Fishing areas, trails, playground are all FREE!

By Chander S |

Right close to where we live, twenty minutes ride away, is nature offerings at their best. Golf course, archery, fishing, boating, picnicking and more, all next to lake Needle wood. Peace, quiet and beautiful forest trees with lake water glimmering in the sunlight, beckons people on weekends to explore and relax, and enjoy with friends and family. You could take a cruise too at noon, one and three pm. But check timings. Cycling and trekking are great options. Spend half a day chilling with nature!

By MC8721 |

This park is very easy to get to and free of charge in comparison to the nearby parks. The trails are normally well maintained. Good for hiking with the whole family. Must try the summer boating, very relaxing.

By cbrack98 |

This place is always nice. fishing is decent and not very crowded.
Come visit, you'll be happy you did!

By baller32 |

You go paddle boating and you get a hike around the lake and there it's so fun and you can just play around there so funnnn!!

By KNKinMD |

GO: Paddle Boating, Fishing, Hiking, Bike Riding, Walking, Rollerblading, Picnic, ... . Lake Needwood is a clean and comfortable place to go. The diversification of activities is very nice. My favorite continues to be bike riding thru the park. There is a particular hill that I enjoy the challenge of biking up. Alas, several times I have had to walk my bike the last little bit. -- Now, try hiking Bob's Hill!

By bmk367 |

Lake Needwood is a pleasant spot to spend an afternoon with your family. The trails are well-defined and shaded and go on for quite a distance. However, when it comes to the lake, you will often find notices posted noting that the lake is off-limits due to the toxicity of the algae.

By Y2C31 |

There's a lot you can do around here, from ziplining close by to renting a boat or kayak... Picnic or bbq... Talk a walk along the trail around the lake. This spot is a nice gem when you want to get outdoors

By ken |

Needwood is a very pretty small lake that has areas for picnics and rental of canoes, kayaks and rowboats. Worms for fishing ae available, but there is no fishing pier and few trophy catches, if any. In autumn, the shoreline is gorgeous, but there are signs that say to not touch the water because of some kind of algae.

By Shelly M |

This park has lots to offer, jogging and bike paths, hiking trails, archery ranges, boat rentals, picnic areas, etc.
The best part is catching the local Dagorhir group doing medieval combat on the soccer field! So much fun to watch!

By John D |

We had fun with the kids seeing turtles and birds on the lake. The staff were friendly. The lake is somewhat small, but that was just fine with us. We brought a picnic lunch, and enjoyed ourselves.

By 81grandma1942 |

Walking trail around the lake was most enjoyable. Trail was not paved. Outstanding for the fall foliage.

By TEX2MD |

If you want to get away and have a very nice safe, but secluded walk, this is a very nice way to have a relaxing time.

By LolaGo1 |

Feeling the Cabin Fever, I decided to drive to the Rock Creek Regional Park that includes this Lake. During my visit, the facilities of the Lake were closed, but there were several cars parked in the Parking Lot. Did not see anyone, perhaps they're hiking.

Also noted several 'humps" in the winding street to slow down one's driving. They were not there during my last visit. In Area 3, I noted the new playground and equipment. Children would definitely enjoy them when the weather turns warmer. Some constructions are going on at the Golf Course and areas near the Mansion.

Will visit it again when the warm weather arrives!

By Fei Y |

i was there in September 2015, it was so quiet and green there. i love the lake, it looked like a mirror. it is so good to canoe there and have a picnic with friends or family.

By fwlily |

I like the trail is under the shades so this is a great place to run in the Summer. Biking is always great because it's not packed like the Crescent Trial. The lake is beautiful in the morning. The park is nice and quiet but still with enough morning jogger and dog walkers that you won't feel too quiet. I love Lake Needwook!

By Keren C |

The lake is beautiful and from Memorial Day through Labor Day you can rent boats. Visiting in all seasons is highly recommended- fall is magnificent, when it's snowing in MD it's an amazing place to play with the kids or just walk around,Spring is one of the best times to have a picnic in the meadow, and kayaking in the summer is a lot of fun.

By Tennislefty |

if you love the change of seasons in the Mid atlantic and are a runner or walker then you need to stop by Needwood park and trail. clean, gorgeous colors in the spring and fall. easy mile markers too!

By Sylvia B |

With picnics, fishing, boating, biking, hiking and GoApe runs, this end of Rock Creek Park has much to offer.

By Angela D |

When the kids were small, we took them to Lake Needwood for family picnics. You can rent a canoe or paddle boat or do some light fishing. You can also tour the lake on a boat that leaves periodically. It's a restful place with some tables, bathrooms, covered pavilions. Also has a nice path to walk. Lots to do . Also lovely to just sit and look at the lake.

By ArchaeoBabe |

This park is not far from the headwaters of Rock Creek, and is a nice quite oasis in the middle of Derwood, MD. Located between Rockville and Gaithersburg in Rock Creek Park, it is nice place to hike, have a picnic, go fishing, in the summer go paddle boating or canoeing. For picnicing you can rent a pavilion near one of the playgrounds. They also have an archery range. You can download maps of the park that show the hiking trails. This a great place to bring the family for a fun day.

By Custer2013 |

It's an ideal place for all ages. There is a playground for young ones. If you like archery, volleyball, biking, jogging, hiking, walking your dogs, there are trails and separate areas for all of those activities. There's a trail that goes all the way to the district line. There's also boating around the lake in the summer and you can rent different boats. For more adventure you can also pay to do zip line at Go Ape, close to the entrance to the park.
It's a large park so you can do picnics across from the lake and go for walks. There different trails that you can take. The view of the lake on Needwood road is beautiful in the fall when all the leaves turn.
I like this park because it can be serene and animated at times.

By weimkitty |

It's nice! Lot of places to enjoy a lake view. Bike riders can connect to Rock Creek trail and go all the way to DC. Great for a family hike!

By drlynnrose |

I love the picnic shelters here. You have to pay the county to reserve the shelters for your event or family gathering but if you are willing to take the "risk" of just looking for one that is not reserved, you may be lucky and get a great spot for free.

By Ahn R |

The bacterial infestation has made it hard to take my dogs and kids there anymore. 5 years ago this was a great park to go to but now it has become more neglected so that we rarely go even living just 10 mins from it.

By vmseng |

Lake Needwood is great all on its own for running around, or for running through the streets in the park. It is a beautiful place to relax and exercise, an oasis in suburbia. I've enjoyed it most on a cycling date, when we parked in the lot and rode the Rock Creek Trail for a few miles. Very clean lake.

By Fabulouskaren12 |

I love the hiker/biker trail at Lake Needwood but I don't want everybody to know about it...It is a good place to go for a walk when it is drizzling outside because the leaves provide a canopy...

By CSNRWhite |

This nice, large park and lake area is near our home. We like to go here and walk around but its very drab, Yes, its a park but its need more appeal of the picnic and boating areas and the lake is dirty. A plus is the wildlife, pretty birds, eagles overhead, fish and turtles. But you have to be careful on the trails as there are frequent notices on our listserv of copperhead snake sightings.

By Marcia P |

We love this park and during the summer go almost every week to rent kayaks and spend an hour cruising the lake. We go early morning and always see some wildlife including beavers, herons, turtles, osprey and many smaller birds. Must be good fishing as there are always fishermen along the banks or in boats.

There is a path that encircles the lake, a good hike. Picnic areas, restrooms, and also a zipline. It's great!

By fredels |

My wife and I had a restful, nature-filled morning kayaking in a tandem kayak on August 23. It's a beautiful lake. There is some wildlife here, especially if you go early in the morning. The canoe/kayak/rowboat/paddleboat rentals are open on weekends all September (6:30 AM - 6:00 PM rentals) and cost $10 for an hour, and one must wear life jackets included. Don't take too long choosing the jackets, though. We like to go to west end of the lake along the southern shore. If the sun is out you may see some Cumberland Turtles basking on the rocks. Paddling back, about halfway from the west end of the lake to the dock, there is a shallow inlet (careful not to get grounded), where herons and egrets hang out. This particular morning we didn't see them, but we've seen them other times. If you rent for an hour, that is enough time to paddle to "turtle rocks" (15-20 minutes), and pass "egret inlet" on the way back. There is also a beaver dam on the side of the lake opposite the dock, and a little bit westward, that can be paddled past on the way to "turtle rocks". If you decide to go there before Labor Day, Lake Needwood boating rental opens on weekdays as well, but after 12:00 noon (not in the morning). Here is a site for more info: http://www.montgomeryparks.org/enterprise/park_facilities/boats/lake_needwood/lakeneedwood_boating.shtm

The scenery, lakes, picnic areas, all quite beautiful. However, parking is limited, and at least half the cars in/around the parking lot were ticketed with $50 tickets during my visit, because they parked along the edge of the parking lot or off the roadside. There weren't any No Parking signs to discourage this parking, so tickets came as a shock to all.

It was a nice surprising find. We first found it when we went zip-lining, which is a business on the property. That was fun, but since we've returned several times with our bows and arrows to take advantage of their archery range. Love the peacefulness of the lake and the other areas (like archery range) for people like me.

This could be a great place, but..... People let their dogs go off leash and I would not recommend bringing a young child or stroller here due to the danger. Also, there is dog poop everywhere--nobody picks up after their dog. When moving off the paved path for a cyclist I stepped in dog poop--there is dog poop near every path. No wonder the water often tests toxic and you shouldn't touch it. It's pretty much an environmental disaster.

I absolutely adore Lake Needwood and the various trails it has to offer. It's perfect for super humid days because the paths tend to be very shaded and the views are lovely as well!

....summer boating....hiking....nature trails....picnicing with tables and bbqs available. Lake has a toxic algae at this time so swimming is not allowed.

One of the only lakes in rockville. It has paddle boats. A walking path surrounds it. The go ape park is here. There are pavions and a few playgrounds. Crowded on weekends. Good place to bring the kids fishing.

Visited in the summer with my entire family, including grandchildren. We loved it. We took a long walk, fed the birds, picnicked, and just got away from the stress of urban life in the Washington D.C. area for a few hours. Try it some time; it's great!

This is a charming park with several trails that are well pounded by walkers, runners, cyclists, and the local high school cross country team.In season visitors can fish, rent row boats, paddle boats (2 and 4 passenger) and can ride in a pontoon boat that toodles around the perimeter. The water has a blue green algae (cyanobacteria), which produces a substance that is toxic to the liver in people and pets. You can bring Fido for a walk or run and even on the boats, but don't let him drink the water (same for Lake Frank nearby).
The trails include one that takes you around the lake, to Lake Frank and the Smith Center, as well as one that goes to Washington DC, and others.
The park has many picnic areas, pavilions for parties and 2 or 3 restrooms that are maintained well.
In season there is a snack stand with standard fare.
Oddly there is no cooking permitted, so between that and the algae it is rated with 4 circles

Great place to hike, walk or bird watch. When spring arrives good fishery for bass, crappie, bream and catfish. Fun for picnics and great play ground for children. Also, boat and canoe rentals.

This is a little slice of heaven in an otherwise congested, crowded and loud D.C. suburb. Spend peaceful hours walking around the lake, watching the herons, ducks and other waterfowl, or (in the warmer months) pedalboat, kayak or canoe on the lake itself. There are also pontoon programs and a huge gazebo where folks congregate. Clean and incredibly well-maintained, this is a gorgeous natural escape.

We go to lake Needwood a lot, you can hike and bike from here, lots of easy hikes - 7+ miles natural surface trails, or you rent kayaks, rowboats etc.. There is also a ropes course and archery range. Rock Creek Hiker /Biker Trail which is paved starts here and you can ride all the way to the District or Columbia / Montgomery County Boundary - (37.2 miles out and back).

I love this park because it is convenient and I can just slide my kayak in when I want. I have a regional pass that covers this park and Black Hills for boating seasonal. So I can go when I want and fee is paid.. They have rental kayaks and paddle boating, regular boats. Fishing and there is a place to go ziplining(need reservations)

We venture here often as it is close to home. The lake is beautiful and spacious, the area is sprawled with grills, tables, shelters and good walking trails. Our son loves to play near the water and watch the fisherman at work. There is no swimming in the lake and water should not be ingested due to Microcystin produced by algae. We sometimes take a canoe out on the lake, the boathouse is open during the spring and summer months.

If you like nature and lake this is a park for you. They had also boat and peddle boat rentals if you like to navigate on the water. Park also offer hiking trails along the beautiful lake and a 180 panoramic outdoor area.

A lovely park in the middle of Rockville, hidden from hustle and bustle of the city. As parks go it is modest with a lake and boat house and hiking trials. We go here during the weekdays when it is quiet and peaceful sometimes bringina a picnic lunch and sitting in the shade by the boathouse and gazebo. I expect it is alot busier during the weekend. Its a wonderful place to just get away and relax for a bit.Have not really paarticipated in the rowing or hiking activities. The park is a bit hard to find even with GPS as there are several entrances to it and the park entrance is not clearly marked. worth persisting.

been coming here for 30 plus years for picnic, boating, hiking and taking kids for the play ground, place to play volleyball, fishing....

Terrific locations, nice, clean and quiet.

Lake Needwood is conveniently located in Montgomery County. Parking is always available and free. It is a great place to go to get away to the woods without the long drive. Boats for rent and a snack bar fill out the experience. Little ones can be taken with adults on the larger needwood steamer.

Lake Needwood is a 75-acre (300,000 m2) reservoir in Derwood, Maryland just east of Rockville, in the eastern part of Montgomery County that is located on Rock Creek.

Once I followed the GPS to the address, there is a few car parks, I followed the sign to the trailhead carpark. There are a few trails, there is a 13.5 miles for bikers and hikers to Washington DC. I took another one that is supposed to be around the lake. I thought it was call the Blue Heron Trail, but it is not on the link today when I check it again. In any case, I was lost, the signage was poor, there are detours all over the place, because the park is going through some construction.

The lake is nice. There is a boating area where you can rent kayak, row boat, pedal boat, canoes and there is boat tours as well. You can just show up and there is a little house by the lake where you can get things arranged.

It is a nice Sunday out but I wish the signage could have been better.

Great place to walk your dog, walk yourself, walk by yourself, walk with friends. Just get out there and walk at the lake. It's especially pretty when the leaves are changing in the Fall. Sometimes we enjoy having a picnic lunch by the lake and just relax.

You can also rent canoes, kayaks and rowboats. I believe they stock the lake so you can also try fishing from the shoreline or in a rental boat.

Feeling bored, I decided to visit this Lake located at the Rock Creek Regional Park. There are a lot of activities to do at the lake such as fishing, walking, hiking, picnicking at the Shelters, etc. There are also some small playgrounds for the children as well as zip lining near by. Entrance is FREE.

The weather was nice during my visit, not too hot and with some breeze. Took some pictures and enjoyed my visit here.

Tips: Note that boats for rent are not available on Mondays and Tuesdays. See attached pictures for rental fees and other information.

Lake Needwood is a great place to take a picnic and have the kids play outside on a nice day. There are also amazing bike trails as well.

Perfect place to spend the day outside away from the trafic .They have sum activities so it's not boring at all.

Less than a mile from my house, Lake Needwood is a great place to relax, take walks along the several paths, and have a picnic or a sandwich with family or friends. Often crowded on warm, sunny days, less so when it chilly, it is always a place that affords relief from daily cares and leaves one refreshed.

A really nice park and lake in the middle of a densely populated suburban area. I love Lake Needwood and the surrounding area. Fishing is so-so, but the area is beautiful.

By danrezzy |

Have lived near this since 1968. Beautiful place with lake, trails, boat rentals, etc. Nice for picnics. FREE, EVEN THE PARKING! Can reserve group pavilion picnic areas.

By Chava Z |

If I'm not mistaken, a Montgomery County paddling pass gets you access to Lake Needwood in Rockville and Little Seneca Lake in Boyds. Lake Needwood does the trick when all I need is somewhere to paddle, but it's not particularly scenic as lakes go. If you're in the neighborhood, I recommend hiking around Lake Bernard Frank and the Meadowside Nature Center.

Any season will do. Hiking all year round is fine. Summer though brings out the boating and picnicking. Enjoy.

Sorta hidden getaway in middle of Montgomery County. Good sized lake with surrounding parkland for picnics, etc.

I have been to this park and lake more times than I can count. We even had a memorial for a dear friend here too. Being central to many places I go on any given day, I like to do a drive through from time to time. Winter isn't the best here, everything is sort of gloomy. However, in spring, summer and fall it is absolutely gorgeous there.

One of our favorite spots for walking year round. We love it here! So happy to be close by! Well kept trails, always clean, dogs on leashes.

My family has been visiting this lake for decades. For the most part, this park is nice to visit, however, do not come into contact with the water directly! It's dangerous. Because of this, there are many other parks in the area within reasonable driving distance, that have a lake where it's safe to touch the water.

Regarding the complaints about the staff, I've experienced both sides equally. I've personally witnessed where the staff has been amazingly helpful and friendly and the opposite. The gentleman Jim is usually friendly but I've seen him be passively aggressive towards visitors, too. He's probably the oldest person in charge, so maybe there's a power thing going on there. Typically, it's a nice visit, just be aware of the water.

This is a county park that's maintained by the parks and recreation department. It has a little something for everyone ... trails through wooded areas, an enormous lake with paddleboats, canoes and kayak rentals (check for times before you go ... in the off season their hours are very limited.) Fishing is allowed, and most often you'll see photographers throughout the park taking photos of the lake and its wildlife. (Mostly Canadian geese, but occasionally you can catch herons, egrets, various ducks and turtles -- I once saw an enormous snapping turtle in shallow water there. And of course there are the warblers, chickadees and nuthatch-variety of birds in the wooded areas. Definitely worth a visit for out of towners and a great place to unwind for locals who want a little oasis of nature in an otherwise over-developed region!

This was a an easy choice for weekends with the kids. Nice grounds, water views and boats to rent, fields for sports and lots of paths to hike. You can picnics and barbeque here too.
A nice place for a runner and the bike path to Rock Creek park goes by here so people can bike all the way to DC from here if they wish.

By Angel S |

Always been a great place and so close to everything. It is the nicest park I've ever been too but it has everything you need for a nice day out on the lake. For anyone in the Rockville area who has never been here; this is a must visit on a lazy afternoon.

Needwood has a trail that goes all way into DC. I recently walked 13 miles in one morning. the path is paved and in very good shape. The woods and stream are very pretty. Even saw deer along the trail. There are several places where you have to cross streets so be careful. Also no bathrooms along the trail, we had to detour off to fast food restaurant to use the facilities.
They also have boating there, we did not try this. The Go Ape Zipline is fun also.

Lake Needwood offers a number of outdoors activities close to home. Hiking, boating, fishing, picnicking, playground equipment, archery and a scenic boat ride are all available. The lake is stocked with fish and it is easy to catch bluegill, bass, tiger musky, and trout. The not so easy prey are large carp which always seem to be at least 10 feet beyond ones ability to cast to them but offer yet another challenge for the fisher. It is a great place to take young children to give them an outdoor experience.
