Peaceful, beautiful park like cemetary. Note hours of Garfield monument and Wade chapel- they close earlier than cemetary. Download PDF of notable graves- they can be hard to find. Alan Freed and Eliot Ness are to the right of the Wade Chapel when facing it, Rockefeller to the right of Garfield Monument. Lovely place to walk around.

I know this sounds like an odd thing to do, but Lake View Cemetery is beautiful. The grounds are gorgeous. Plus, you can go see the Wade Memorial Chapel. It is one of the few interiors left in the world that was totally designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany and his studios. You can also visit the huge James A. Garfield Memorial. And, as a bonus, it's located right at the top of Little Italy, so you can just walk or drive down the hill for delicious food.

Beautiful ! Proud to have this magnificent cemetery in Cleveland. We are very familiar with the mausoleum as our father is there. Love walking the paths in the nice weather. Went to the Garfield Memorial last summer with my grandson and bought several items at the teeny tiny gift shop.

Three friends, each living 3 hrs away, met up in Cleveland for an afternoon of friendship, art, architecture, history, and food! One of our stops was Lake View Cemetery. The Garfield Memorial (open 10-4) is awesome! The docent shared the history of the Memorial (built 1891) and details of the memorial windows and the domed ceiling. The mosaics are stunning! We descended to the lower level to see the crypt, and we climbed the stairs to the upper level, enjoying the views into the atrium as well as the views of the cemetery and the city skyline from the outdoor terrace. Next we visited the Wade Chapel and all of its Tiffany glory!! The docent told us how the window was acquired, and the story of the stunning Tiffany mosaic murals. On a walkabout behind the chapel we stopped to pay our respects to Alan Freed, the DJ who coined the phrase "rock & roll" and then stopped up the road at the Eliot Ness cenotaph and the "Angel of Death" statue at the Haserot family plot. We thoroughly enjoyed our two hours at the cemetery!

Visited on a snowy day in March. Garfield's tomb and Wade chapel were not open yet. Many interesting tombstones. Look for Elliot Ness' tombstone.

Beautiful cemetery. The James Garfield memorial is currently closed for renovation, but you can still see it. We found John D. Rockefeller's grave, as well. Worth a short visit.

In addition to the crying Angel statue there is Alan Freed's resting place, Elliot Ness's plot where there is a large collection of pens left behind, and many other really interesting and beautiful memorials.

I would have never thought to go to a cemetery, but this was a really beautiful place. The chapel on the grounds with the murals and Tiffany window was truly great. Loved it!

OK, a cemetary is not usually the most popular place to visit for most people, but make an exception to that thinking for this place. We visited here twice during the month of October while I was recovering from surgery and still didn't get to see all of it. The leaves were beautiful, the critters were active--many fox, red, and grey squirrels and lots of birds, to a bird watchers' delight. Deer and other small game are said to live there, but we didn't see any. The statuary artwork is well done and varied in its styles, according to the time period of burial, which encompasses a span of over 150 years, so you will see everything from angels to guitars carved in stone, with horses and lions thrown into the mix. Prominent people from Cleveland's history have signage placed near the burial site to provide a snapshot of their contribution to society and/or history. And if you can't find the gravesite you are looking for, the helpful groundskeepers are glad to assist you. President Garfield's memorial was under renovation while we were there and closes for the winter at the end of October, so I was not able to view it at this time.(His family homestead is located in Mentor, OH, just a short drive away.)
A visitor's center is located near one of the main gates and can provide maps, brochures, and directions for the best viewing as well. Restrooms are located in several parts of the grounds. The Wade Chapel is another viewing treat with its Tiffany artistry on display. A volunteer is usually on hand to explain its finer points. There is also a building reserved for cremains which also serves as a memorial for those who have donated their bodies for medical research.
Walking the grounds is encouraged but bicycles and scooters are not allowed. A trolley-guided tour is available on weekends- check at the visitor's center for details.
Overall, it was a peaceful, calming experience with a feast for the eyes and knowledge for the soul of those who had gone before.

Yes its a cemetery but great landmarks to see.Plus they have 2 sets of bald eagles that live their Beautiful to see them in flight.

This cemetery is one of the most scenic spots in the Cleveland. It contains the Garfield memorial and monuments themselves are quite impressive. Informational brochures and maps of the cemetery are available near the entrances. This is an excellent place to take pictures.

I actually really enjoyed my visit here. Go into the main bldg and pay the $5 for a very helpful booklet of the cemetery and who is buried there. There is a docent in the Wade Chapel (Jim) that was amazing! I learned so many interesting facts. The docent at Garfield's tomb (Kevin) was also very informative. This is well worth spending a few hours. I walked it and it was a beautiful, peaceful day. A must do!

I know that sounds weird but with a history teacher and an anthropology background this was our cup of tea for an anniversary. We stopped in the office for a map and got the $5 booklet too. It’s a nonprofit so I was happy to get a little extra. The map was easy to follow once we got our bearings. There were guides in the Garfield monument as well as the Wade Chapel. The monument is undergoing work but the inside was open. The chapel was gorgeous and his knowledge of the mosaics was excellent. The cemetery was well kept and park-like. Will be going back with friends soon.

This place is a must-see for those interested in Cleveland’s long history as home to many leaders. From John Rockefeller to Alan Freed - a veritable who’s who of Cleveland history have their final resting place here. Wade Chapel features extensive Tiffany glass. As name implies - form the right locations you can catch a Lake Erie view. Found it a cool place to check out some afternoon - would recommend it. Stop at the office when you get there for a free map of prime places to visit.

This is a very large and beautiful cemetery! President Garfield’s memorial and burial site was closed for restoration but still a very cool place to see. There were a number of other cool monuments, including the founder of Rock n Roll and a monument of the Angel of Death Victorious.

We enjoyed walking around, exploring. Very interesting. My teen daughter enjoyed, as did we. Combo of history and art.

I took a tour with about a dozen others..i never thought I would like the tour but I really did..about 300 or so acres of well manicured vegetation and a lot of history...a small registration fee of $ 5.00...A PLACE TO SEE IF YOU'RE IN TOWN.

Very interesting cemetery- chapel with Tiffany window and mosaic tile of Old And New Testament- very knowledgeable volunteers - burial, site of many famous people

We came to see the Garfield Monument and were so impressed! The cemetery is . beautifully landscaped with rolling hills. President Garfield's monument and grave is very impressive. Inside is a statue of Garfield, beautiful architecture and dome. Walk up the stairs to an outdoor deck with views of the Cleveland skyline. Down below the main level is his casket.
The other stunning highlight is the Wade Chapel, which was designed and built in 1901 by Louis Tiffany. It includes beautiful mosaics on the walls as well as the incredible centerpiece - Tiffany's window, "The Flight of Souls". Prior to being placed in the chapel, the piece won first place at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris.
Other interesting monuments and markers are throughout the cemetery.

Saw some really interesting stones. Saw Michael Stanley's, Elliot Ness just to name a couple. The community moselium is so beautiful.

Lake View Cemetery is one of my favorite places in all of Cleveland to visit. It looks. Ack at a time when such places were viewed as places to walk about in and so has beautiful scenery. There's the Garfield monument to visit and chapels with Tiffany glass and names that look back to when Cleveland was THE city to live in.

The grounds are impeccable and so serene. The history of the cemetery and notaries interred is remarkable. Visiting Lakeview was a mini trip to the past. The headstones, masouleam and chapels were lovely. One had a sense of walking through time and getting a glimpse of a long ago era.

Where do I start?
This cemetery is so much more than a final resting place for that have passed. Sunday Lolley tours are well worth the money if you are short on time. Long afternoons are best to explore the hidden gems including the "lake view", view of the dam, Wade Chapel and the numerous beautiful gravestones among so much more.

I’m a cemetery lover, and enjoy walking through them as much as I can. This one has been one of my favorites. The weeping Angel is a must see while here. The walking paths are peaceful and clean, you’ll have a hard time leaving.

This is a must see. So many amazing monuments and statues. Beautiful chapel with Tiffany stained glass and wall to wall mosaics. President Garfield's tomb is one of the most ornate structures I have seen. The landscape is beautiful with old growth trees, ponds and rolling hills. Stop by the office, they have maps and the friendly staff can point out some of the most popular sights. If you like art and history (or are spooky) you will not be disappointed.

Get a map from the office off Euclid Avenue. Then ask staff person to add their favorites. There are interesting new gravestones, like Alan Freed's jukebox, but the older stones and mausoleums are elaborate, soaring and beautiful.

This is a beautiful cemetery. I have been here twice now. The Garfield memorial is really cool and easy to find. I would recommend visiting this cemetery to everyone.

It takes a certain type of person to appreciate Cleveland's Lake View Cemetary if you don't have a loved one buried there. Some of the who's who of Cleveland history are laid to rest there among beautifully landscaped grounds carved out of the last little hill of the Allegheny Plateau before it flattens into the Midwest plains.
You will find an imposing memorial for the assassinated President Andrew Garfield. That is always interesting.
But my favorite spot is immediately to the east of Garfield—the final resting place of John D. Rockefeller. I'm not the only one to go there regularly to deposit dimes on his tombstone as a ritual for financial prosperity.
In his later years, John D. Rockefeller was known for reaching in his pocket for one of the many dimes he always carried to give to children he met.

There is a chapel in the cemetery with an Art Deco interior completely designed and decorated by Tiffany; stain glass window, mosaic murals. The side walls are murals depicting rowers, one wall has dark-haired Romans and the opposite wall has blonde Greeks. One is Old Testament (dark) the other New Testament (enlightenment), and everybody is rowing towards Jesus in the window over the altar. Seriously, you must go see this.

A friend told me about this cemetery. There are over 100,000 graves here. The most prominent memorial is that of our 20th President James A. Garfield. Inside the memorial is amazing from the stain glass to the top of the dome. It even has an outdoor balcony from which you can see the skyline (on a clear day) of Cleveland. He was assassinated after four months in office.
Other notables and others not so notable include.
Eliot Ness: Cleveland’s Safety director and the best-known member of the Untouchables.
George W. “Peggy” Parratt: He is credited with throwing the first forward pass in a professional game. He was from Canada.
Raymond Johnson Chapman: A Cleveland Indian baseball player. He is the only MLB player that died as a result of an injury.
Alan Freed: The Cleveland native and radio DJ that coined the term “Rock & Roll”. His marker is unbelievable. A granite Rock-Ola jukebox.
The Haserot Angel: Also known as the weeping angel. The patina of the bronze statue makes it look as if it is crying.
One last thing don’t pass up a visit to the Wade Memorial Chapel which features an interior designed by Louis Tiffany. Stunning to say the least.
Enjoy your visit…….we did.

I know it’s odd to like a cemetery, but LakeView is gorgeous! In spring, thousands of daffodils pop up. On a clear day, you can climb to top of Garfield memorial and see all the way downtown and out to Lske Erie! Don’t miss Wade Chapel with its Tiffany windows!

Incredible! Beautifully laid out like a park, just like all Cleveland Metroparks (the Emerald Necklace), and highlights Cleveland's history and the philanthropy of Carnegie, Rockefeller and the Wade Family. Includes the James Garfield Memorial Site which is an American historical landmark and the top floor of his tomb (a presidential tomb! so cool!) provides, in my opinion the most beautiful view of the Cleveland Skyline (but is only accessible from April to September, I believe). The Garfield memorial alone is worthy of a few hours and the whole cemetery deserves a day trip. Great for families and kids, because it shows kids not to be afraid of ghosts, death, cemeteries, but also gets kids excited about field biology, environmental science, stone work and masonry, Cleveland/Ohio/American history, statues and art, even Egyptian pyramids because of "the crypt". My favorite place to walk through when I went to Case Western and a place I visited often to clear my thoughts during my 10 years in Cleveland. Great for hiking or biking, but after dark.....its dangerous. Do not sneak in or go running at dusk alone.

There is so much history in this Cemetery, not just the Garfield and Rockefellar Memorials, but all the gravestones with famous Cleveland names, including Higbees and Elliott Ness. The chapel is a must see with all the stunning Tiffany glass mosaics. Beautiful view of the lake. Cemetery is the final resting place for the famous and not famous. It is a very special place.

Wrote a bunch under the Garfield Monument page. We spent about an hour there. Interesting place to visit.

Wonderfully rich in the history, art and architecture of Cleveland. Wade Chapel and the Garfield Monument are must see features. The docents at both are extremely knowledgeable and enjoy sharing their knowledge with tours. I've been several times and it's always a special treat to have a one on one talk with the people, at either place as they have more time to get into some more hidden details.
Great for a kids history lesson although they'll get their fill of the talks well before the docent is done. So much to know about the area.

My husband was determined to find Eliot Ness's grave so we set out to search for it. This was a huge cemetery with lots of history. We not only found Eliot Ness's grave but President Garfield's monument was very historic. We ended up spending a couple hours here.

We drove through this vast old cemetery to see some fall color and enjoy the topography. It sits along a very hilly section that cradles Cleveland Heights and Cleveland. Some amazing crypts and if course you gotta stop at The Garfield Memorial. There is a large scale restoration effort underway on the memorial but it's still open through construction. Warning: for some odd reason they don't allow bicycles in the graveyard, which is completely dumbfounding. I found out the hard way trying to cut through on my way to work. (Security is pretty diligent) There is also an amazing little Chapel you can visit that has Tiffany stained glass in it. Worth a visit or a picnic.

I indicated that this is a "hidden gem". It is not exactly hidden but for most visitors to Cleveland it would not be prominent on their list of things to see. But I think it should be. Magnificently laid out on a hill above Little Italy and, indeed, offering a view of Lake Erie (and the Cleveland skyline) from its higher levels it is a splendid place. The architecture of the memorials and crypts, the artistry of the statuary are splendid. There is much to be learned about the city's history by walking among the graves. For the arborist there are many different species of trees, especially colorful in the fall. A surprise to some is a very large dam, well hidden by the trees. A key attraction is the Garfield Memorial - honoring President James Garfield. Unfortuantely it is closed at present due to the pandemic.

We have been here several times. Each of the statues, the damn, the quiet hidden areas are all so interesting. It has a rich history. Some of the trees and plants are rare and some of the headstones are integrated into the landscaping. We look forward to going back again. This time we may take a tour.

A peaceful place, where the famous and not so famous (including my mom) rest. Garfield's Tomb is interesting, but Wade Chapel is amazing, with Tiffany glass and mosaics.

This place is full of history with all the beautify Tiffany mausoleums. If you are lucky enough to be able to get inside Wade Chapel...it will not disappoint! The history alone is worth the trip.

We had an unforgettable group tour with Diana and she is to be commended for going above and beyond. This was not your run of the mill tour guide. Started in the Wade memorial Chapel. She has a beautiful speaking voice and compassion for the art (Tiffany), the history, the family behind it (Wade) and the religious purpose of the chapel. The tour continued to famous sites and graves. We learned so much and have a new appreciation for this Cleveland historic landmark, and we’re encouraged to partake in other programs the cemetery offers. Kudos Diana!!

As we were leaving Cleveland one of the friends suggested to stop by the cemetery. It was well worth the stop. The volunteer staff were soooo helpful and passionate about sharing the details of the cemetery. There is some beautiful and one of a kind cemetery head stones. You can take the official bus tour but we did it on our owe.

This place is simply amazing. We visited in the spring and the flowers were beautiful. Make sure to get out and really explore the James Garfield memorial and the Wade Chapel. We enjoyed this so much we came back to do another run through before returning home the next day.

Active cemetery with the history of Cleveland buried there. Rockefeller has a huge obelisk, President Garfield has an impressive monument, as well many other very nice gravestones. Be respectful and worth a visit.

Not many people go out of their way to visit a cemetery on vacation but there's so much history here, how could you not. My boyfriend is kind of a history buff. He got me to watch "the men who built america" so i learned about Rockefeller in a cool way rather than reading about it. I'd rather watch a special then go hunting the real story afterwards. So when i found out Rockefeller was buried here, i knew we had to go. The more i investigated, turns out Eliot Ness is here. I grew up in the 80's & 90's...Kevin Costner, The Untouchables. Again i had seen the movie, did the research later so we had to see this. Alan Freed is here. The man who coined the term "rock & roll". James Garfield Memorial is in the cemetery too (separate review) & i'm not sure who the Haserot Family is but the "Haserot Angel" is something to see. Very overwhelming. The angel is a bit scary, kind of sad yet so beautiful. Try to stop by here if you get the chance. Definitely worth seeing!

Took a friend to the cemetery to pick up the Christmas wreaths from the office. The people take such good care of her. She is 95 years old and they make sure all her needs are met.

Wonderful place if you are able to walk great distances. If not there is amply road space to drive. The history is well worth a visit.

Lakeview is the most beautiful cemetery I've ever visited. Don't be put off by the idea of going to a cemetery to look around. The monuments are a thing to behold and you'll love to walk and reflect on the winding tree-lined roads.

Good history landmark about President Garfield crypt and information. Glad we went. Would recommend to take about an hour.

Who would think that a cemetery would offer tours and that hundreds of people would be walking around the graves on any given day. Famous people such as Eliot Ness are buried here. Dont miss the daffodils on the hill in the spring. Garfield and a Tiffany window in the chapel

Be sure to go when there are docents at the major tombs. The Wade mausoleum was a Tiffany gem, including the mosaic walls.

Our ship's tour went to Lake View Cemetery primarily to visit the Wade Chapel. We did learn a few interesting facts.
>It is 285 acres with 65 acres remaining for future development (enough room for the next 100 years!)
>It was founded in 1869
>There are about 109,000 people buried, including cremation and entombments
>There is a memorial to President Garfield, a monument to honor to family of John D. Rockefeller
The ashes of crime fighter Eliot Ness were scattered in one of the lakes.

I told my wife that TripAdvisor rated this as a prime thing to do when visiting Cleveland. We weren't disappointed. The docent at the Wade Chapel was very friendly and informative. She took time to engage and educate visitors as they entered the building. It was a true representation of what God-inspired artisans can conceive and create.
Give yourself at least two hours depending upon what you want to see. Be aware that the Chapel and Garfield's tomb close at 4:00.

Beautiful old cemetery. Cool place for a picnic or to just drive through. Best time to visit is in the spring when all the daffodils are in bloom.

The monuments here are spectacular and many works of art. We visited the Wade Chapel and were able to sit in on a tour and learn some of the history. The mosaics on the wall and stained glass were amazing.

Take some time and take a tour - there are so many famous people buried in this beautifully landscaped cemetery. The history of the chapel alone is worth the tour price. Go see Tiffany Glass at its best.

I had no idea both these prominent men were buried here when we entered the cemetery. Very well kept place. Wish hours to the Garfield Monument were longer. Also, the founder of rock & roll is buried here.

A wonderful place! They really take good care of younand pay close attention to your needs. They are very knowledgeable and want to make sure you have the very best experience.

I came to Lake View Cemetery to visit the James Garfield Memorial Tomb. After finishing my visit to the Garfield Memorial I allowed myself some time to explore this large and very beautiful Cemetery that has an abundance of cemetery art. In addition to President Garfield there are a number of other notable people resting in this cemetery and I was able to visit several of them. Just a short distance from the Garfield Tomb is a large obelisk that marks the grave of the founder of Standard Oil, John D. Rockefeller. Also resting in this cemetery is Basketball Hall of Famer, Nate Thurmond, and the only Major Leage Baseball Player to die as a result of being hit by a pitched baseball, Ray Chapman. There is also a memorial cenotaph to the man who was the leader of “The UnTouchables” Elliot Ness, whose cremains were scattered in a nearby lake here in the cemetery. As cemeteries go, Lake View Cemetery is the final resting place of a number of notable people and everywhere you look there is an impressive amount of Cemetery Art.

We visited on a sunny but chilly winter day, and enjoyed this tranquil resting place mostly to ourselves. Although accessing the Garfield memorial was closed for the season, it was still interesting to contemplate the short and tragic tenure of our 20th president at his final resting spot. The rest of the cemetery also offers a lot of mostly 19th century and early 20th century history. With all respect to those who still use the cemetery or have relatives and ancestors buried here, it is also an interesting place to ponder the complicated history of Cleveland. One can’t help but think of the working class stiffs who powered grubby downtown and its factories and mills - while the upperclass owners, landlords, and magnates (“robber barons” is the less charitable way to describe those who earned their fortunes from the Civil War and other conflicts) built their mansions in the suburban hills and spend fortunes on their oversized tombstones and mausoleums. Researching some of the grave sites can actually enrich a visit to this beautiful place. For but one example, look up Silas Safford Stone, who has an ostentatious marker in the shadow of the nearby obelisk that serves as a beacon to John D. Rockefeller. Fascinating!

This cemetery is just beautiful, not to mention full of history, interesting people and stories. The Garfield Memorial is wonderful and don't miss taking the 60 plus steps up to see 40 miles of Lake Erie and the downtown skyline if the day is clear. Wade Memorial Chapel is breathtaking with the Tiffany glass window and designed walls. There are many walks and tours that you can take, and I highly recommend doing so, you learn so much about the cemetery. Can't wait to go back in the spring to see all the daffodils and in the fall for the leaves....it is just a lovely place in the middle of the city. Not to be missed.

We were told this was not to be missed. The monuments, Garfield, Rockefeller. We drove around in awe of everything we saw. I truly have never seen such a sacred, moving, powerful place.
So nice to have quiet and solitude as you reflect on what you are seeing. So special, I'm glad we went.

We went on a Sunday morning to walk, drive, and wander through the cemetery. We started at the Garfield Monument. We learned the history from one of the guides there. Very informative. There are steps up to the top and down to the basement. No elevator. There we got a map of monuments to look for. The grounds are just beautiful. Well kept up. The dam was dry but Who Knew we had that right in Cleveland? Fabulous. This is a must to do while visiting Cleveland.

On a recent Cleveland visit a friend and I decided to go explore Lakeview cemetery. What a surprise I didn’t realize it used to be a botanical garden. There’s a driving route you can take through the cemetery past all the beautiful foliage and greenery. Once you start to notice some of the headstones you see all the famous names of Cleveland. Alan freed, the Rockefeller’s and countless others. Also the gravesite of President Garfield is there with his body lying in state in the rotunda in the crypt below very interesting. The Wade Chapel designed by Tiffany is museum worthy all on its own. The Tiffany window and mosaic walls are breathtaking and a must see.

What an awesome view of Lake from top of the ridge!!!! We enjoyed a leisurely stroll among all the history found in the cemetery. Beautiful wooded area with huge trees and shrubs. A well maintained area. Public restroom was fabulous!!!!! Visit this old cemetery!!!!

Enjoyed driving through the cemetery and stopped at the Garfield monument. The guide(Kevin) at Garfield monument was very knowledgeable and added alot too our visit.

This place is a hidden gem. Visiting the gravesites of so many legendary Clevelanders in addition to President Garfield's crypt and monument was a fascinating experience. (Be sure to climb to the top and see the view of downtown and Lake Erie). The chapel that contains priceless Tiffany mosaics and stained glass was truly incredible.

I'm so glad I decided to visit Lake View Cemetery while visiting Cleveland. it was so interesting to visit President Garfield's gravesite and to see the beautiful Tiffany glass inside of the Wade Chapel. Also seen Rockefeller's monument.

We were driven through the cemetery by a guide who told the story behind some of the interesting gravesites here. Once outside the city, it is now easily reached on a city tour.

Very happy we stopped by. There is a 5 minute overview presented by an employee which gives history of the president. The crypt can be seen on the ground floor. The second floor has good views of the exhibit, and then the 3rd floor you can go outside and see Cleveland. Very happy that we visited.

You could easily spend a few hours and learn about Cleveland's notables and significant figures in American history. If you are tight for time, and want to see a few monuments within an hour's walk of one another, must see the Wade Memorial Chapel, not too far from the Euclid Entrance. (Hours are 9am - 4pm) Follow the white line from the entrance and you will see beautiful family mausoleums on your right hand side.
Guided tours are offered in the Wade Chapel and learn about the artwork by Tiffany. Stunning. Within a few minutes walk, is the juke box shaped marker of Alan Freed who is credited for coining the term Rock n. Roll. A little further on your right is the grave marker of Eliot Ness who brought down Al Capone. Further down the road, set back abit, you will see the haunting Haserot Angel.
President Garfield's Memorial (9am- 4pm) and Rockerfeller's Obelisk are the two other monuments that should be on your list if you have the time.

Cemetery is huge! Staff is helpful in providing info on grave locations. Garfield memorial was closed for the season so unfortunately could not go in. But overall, cemetery is well kept and provided map is easy to follow.

This is a truly gorgeous cemetery. The fact that the outstanding Garfield Monument and the Wade Memorial Chapel are here adds to the charm and beauty of this place. Do visit both above and get a tour by the friendly and informative docents there. Remember to leave a small donation if possible at the Garfield Monument and Wade Chapel to help them preserve these treasures. Also, you are only two minutes away from Little Italy, too. Two of the best things in Cleveland.

After several years away, I knew I had to stop here since I was coming in May. The views of the city skyline and lake, the blossoms in trees and flower beds was amazing. After a very slow loop by car, we couldn't resist getting out of the car and meandering around some more.

The Garfield Memorial is really interesting and well worth visiting. The cemetery feels more park like than a regular cemetery.

When we saw this we were like who visits cemeteries. When we went we found a couple hours a of surprises. Besides all the famous individuals byrued there (ex President Garfield) the headstones, memorial chapel with Tiffany glass and memorials are sites to be seen. The cemetary provides maps. We saw headstones look like a jukebox, Full size image of cats and people, and the Angel that cries. The Garfield memorial is a work of art in itself with the artist from Europe doing all the mosaic . A must see in Cleveland. Never thought I would recommend a visit to the cemetary but I am recommending this one.

The tour guides were helpful and knowledgeable. The Wade chapel was beautiful. The tour guide was brilliant and enthusiastic about his job. The Garfield monument was breathtaking and would love to see it get fixed up even more especially the tiles.

Lake View Cemetery is the site of the graves of such famous people as Elliot Ness, as well as the home of a lovely memorial to President James A Garfield. The grounds, however, are the draw for me. In the spring, the flowering trees and Daffodil Hill are a huge draw. There are signs to take visitors on a tour to see the best flowers. In the summer, the number of mature trees and the pond are beautiful. In the fall, the colors of all those trees are worth the trip. Even in winter the place is amazing. I drive through frequently when I’m in the area just to take a nature break.

We were amazed at all of the artistic family plot markers, many mausoleums with stained glass, and miles of unique headstones.

If you enjoy scenic cemeteries you will like this one. Well worth the visit. Went on a Sunday when the office was closed but found maps were available near the door.

The cemetery was one of the first places on my list to visit during our vacation in Cleveland. There are so many people interred there who were captains of industry in the seminal days of our country's development. Add a US President, spectacular art decorating gorgeous architecture in a bucolic setting makes a visit here a no brainer. Add Allen Freed, Elliot Ness, accomplished and decorated doctors, educators and just regular folks and you have a slice of American history right here in Cleveland. Every stone or monument tells a story, the sculpture and art work is stunning and the landscaping on the hilly terrain, makes this location one of a kind and a must see.

It's hard to say that a cemetery is an amazing place to see, but this cemetery is amazing! The head stones are just amazing. We would have gotten out and walked around but it was a cold and windy day. We plan on going back to go inside the Garfield memorial.

Stopped here on my trip to Cleveland. The Garfield memorial was beautiful-easy walk from parking by the office. Was surprised it was 4 stories and you were able to walk out on the balcony to a beautiful view.
Unfortunately for me got extremely lost walking around the grounds. The nicest groundskeeper offered to bring me back to my car though.

Yes, it's a cemetery, but there is a lot of history here under the shade of the beautiful trees. Several well-known people are buried here. We particularly liked the Garfield memorial, which is quite a tall structure with a statue of the president inside, and some really gorgeous mosaics. you can climb the spiral staircase (about 60 steps, no elevator) to a terrace high up with an outstanding view of downtown Cleveland. The docents are very informative and helpful. The Wade chapel is also amazing, with its Tiffany glass window.

If you like wandering thru cemeteries, you will enjoy this place as it is the final resting place for the important people of Cleveland.

The beauty of the cemetery is not just the variety of headstones but the tree, small pond and the paths which allows you to walk, cycle or run from Euclid to Mayfield.

We visited the main graves: Alan Ross, James Garfield, John D. Rockefeller, Eliot Ness. Definitely a good break from museums and HoFs.

Springtime visits to Daffodil Hill here are memorable, and I remember a school trip to see President Garfield's monument, as well as Rockefeller, Harvey Pekar, and the Tiffany window in the Wade Memorial Chapel.
The grounds are breathtaking, hilly, and good for an afternoon/evening hike.
Worth a visit.

Our 7th time visiting friends near to Cleveland and our first visit here.
It was very good and, although many of the famous people who are buried here won't be known to UK visitors, it has some amazing people.
The most famous were Rockefeller, Wade and President Garfield, but the most memorable was Raymond Johnson Chapman who played for Cleveland Indians and died at the age of 29 playing baseball. The only player to die having been hit with a ball.
Akso Alan Freed who coined the phrase 'Rock & Roll' in the early 1950s.
A must visit.

On a recent trip to Cleveland drove through the cemetery. Had a hard time finding certain sights and only too close to closing found them. Very unusual tombstones and other monuments. Looking to returning.

We visited here on Friday 7/23. The cemetery was very nice and the various headstones were interesting. The volunteers at the cemetery were very informative. We would recommend it.

Lake View Cemetery is a place to learn about Cleveland's rich and famous (Elliot Ness, Jeptha Wade and many more) and at least 8 Moses Cleveland trees-trees that were alive when Moses Cleveland surveyed the Western Reserve prior to 1797. The landscape changes seasonally. In summer FREE jazz concerts are held in front of the James Garfield Memorial. Lakeview is wonderful for a stroll or a guided tour.

I had some time to kill and decided to drive through this old cemetery. It was in the Spring and the plants and flowers were all in bloom. this is a great place to walk around and think.

This is a beautiful cemetery where James Garfield and a few other famous people are buried. We entered on the Euclid entrance where the office is located. I would suggest going into the office first. A tour guide gave us a map; there is a booklet for a $5 donation that details all the notable people buried here. Wade Chapel is particularly beautiful and there was a docent on duty to tell us about the chapel. James Garfield’s mausoleum is worth visiting as well (although the docent here didn’t bother to give us any details about the structure). You can take a spiral staircase to an overlook that has great views of Cleveland. We ended up spending about 1-1/2 hours at the cemetery.

There are so many famous people from Cleveland buried here. It's also a great walk. The Garfield Memorial is fantastic.

Highly recommend spending a few hours here. The grounds are breath taking. Even thou the grounds close at 7:30pm and the office closes at 5pm the Garfield Memorial hours are 9:30 to 4. Highly recommend requesting a map from the office or memorial of the grounds they point out the most popular tombs to see.

To Quote Stefon from Saturday night live.
This cemetery has everything.
James A. Garfield. ELLIOT Ness and Van Swerington Brothers and John Rockefeller.
Plus it's got a great view from the hill.

We had a wonderful tour of this absolutely beautiful place with our great tour guide Dianna. The Wade Chapel is an unbelievable treasure. If you go, take a tour with a guide so you get amazing history and so much more.

Love the free concerts and other activities. The Easter sunrise service is lovely too. Gone on several guided tours and own prowl very beautiful area. A must see in CLE

A lot of history to view. Prominent industrial tycoons and presidential monuments to see. Although it is a cementary, it is also a piece of CLEVELAND history.

This is one of the best places to learn the history of Cleveland and to do it in a beautiful setting. Among the many fascinating final resting places are those of President Garfield (with stunning views), John D. Rockefeller, Eliot Ness, and Ray Chapman (the only major league baseball player to be killed in a game). Pick up a guide and map and wander around on foot or by car. It's an incredibly picturesque place and the cemetery encourages visits. The Wade Chapel has incredible Tiffany glass and is the site of countless weddings.

My mother and I went. Very interesting. Where Garfield's body is in the cemetery is beautiful. That is a must see. The chapel is cool too. My mother loved the Tiffany stained glass window in the chapel. A must place to visit for anyone visiting Cleveland

A visit worth making There is so much history in this cemetery. Garfield's Monument is very impressive and climbing to the top outside explains the name LakeView
The chapel has a beautiful stain glass window
There are tours and events going on all the time

Yes, this spot is a burial ground, but is is also one of the most spectacular spots in Ohio. The grounds are absolutely breathtaking with water features, a dam (hidden) in a valley, "Daffodil Hill in the Springtime", and a Chapel that will take your breath away with its majesty.

Why visit a cemetery? It is both a beautiful and peaceful place to walk but has some of the most famous people entombed there - John D. Rockefeller, Eliot Ness, James Garfield, etc. The cemetery offers educational tours. We had a road rally through the cemetery and was on of the most remembered.

My friend and I both enjoy cemeteries, and decided to visit this one because James Garfield and John D. Rockefeller are both buried here. The cemetery is beautiful! So many interesting monuments and headstones. I recommend getting a map from the main office because the cemetery is massive.

I had a few cemeteries to visit in Cleveland and Lake View was amazing. By far one of the best cemeteries I've ever seen. Huge with a lot of statues and large monuments. The area of the cemetery I specifically was visiting had a lovely pond. I would love to return and take a tour.

We went because of the history. We did not want to be disrespectful and it was interesting. Historical area.

Resting place of John D Rockefeller, The Glidden Family, and President Garfield. Beautiful chapel with a Tiffany stained glass. Garfield lays in state in a large, grand memorial. Staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. Get off the main road to visit some of the lonely crypts down the back roads.

Absolutely beautiful, we went to see the daffodils they were at full bloom! The security guard or volunteer who stands by is a little rude. We can read the signs you didn't have to tell us 4 times not to walk on the hill. There were a ton of famous and just amazing stones to look at. We walked for hrs just looking at the beauty

An unusual destination to be sure but well worth it. Garfield has a giant tomb here and Wade has Tiffany glass. Beautiful grounds too and tours.

It's been a while since I was at the Cemetery but I would love to visit again. It is loaded with history, beautiful grounds and monuments. President Garfield and his family are there and so is legendary lawman, Eliot Ness.

A great stop for natural beauty if you're on a jam-packed tour of the University Circle museums and Little Italy. Stop by in the spring for a blooming tree/flower tour. In the summer, walk the grounds and admire the 19th-century memorials, take a guided tour of the famous people buried there, or visit Wade Chapel, which has murals designed by Tiffany. In the winter, a walk or auto tour will highlight the stark beauty of the memorials in relief against the bare tree branches and the snow.

I have to be honest; I teased my Cleveland based friends that a cemetery was the 3rd best place to go in Cleveland, but it really was a great place to visit. I was impressed and it was a great place to walk around. Doubly so if you're in to Geocaching.

One of Cleveland's gems. It's so much more than just a cemetery as it is the site of Garfield's Monument and the Wade Chapel. Also spectacular landscaping, lakes. Some of my family is buried here, so I've been often. Just beautiful.

The grounds were very well kept. Pretty landscaping. The people who work there were very helpful. Very nice!

The largest monument in the cemetery commemorates James A. Garfield and offers a great view of the Cleveland skyline, but there are a number of impressive and unusual gravestones throughout the grounds. The setting is very peaceful and park like with a variety of plantings, and a variety of tours, concerts and other activities. I took a Lolly the Trolley tour one Sunday afternoon that emphasized some of the famous people buried in the cemetery and included a stop at Wade Chapel to see the Tiffany mosaics. ***Please note: the Garfield Monument is closed during the winter.***

We visited here thanks to other TripAdvisor reviews and they were right. We spent about three hours wandering the grounds on a cool morning. Most people will only visit The Garfield Monument, Rockefeller Obelisk and Wade Chapel. Take the time to admire the difference in headstone design and look for the graves of Eliot Ness and Alan Freed

After visiting the Pere- Lachaise and Highgate cemeteries, I wanted to see Cleveland's well-known monumental cemetery. I did it in a rainy and cold day, which was the perfect gothic-like atmosphere. I liked the place, I think you will appreciate the easy paths to walk or drive around and, of course, the piece of authentic history a cemetery always represents.

What a great way to spend an afternoon. Walking around looking at the famous graves, the Garfield Memorial, the the flowers, and lakes. A beautiful historical place

Lake View Cemetery was modeled after the Victorian and Edwardian garden cemeteries of France and England and is filled with dramatic natural landscapes, curved roadways, artful plantings, and carefully designed monuments. It was designed as a rural retreat for urban dwellers to reconnect with the beauty and healing qualities of nature and is one of the largest cemeteries in the US. Two sites within the cemetery are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The first is the James A. Garfield Memorial, erected in 1890 as the tomb of assassinated President James A. Garfield. The second is Wade Memorial Chapel, which began construction in 1898 and was completed in 1901. It honors the memory of Jeptha Wade, one of the cemetery's co-founders, and was donated by his grandson. Other famous graves are John D. Rockefeller, Eliot Ness, Alan Freed, Ray Chapman, Garrett Morgan, Adella Prentiss Hughes, Al Lerner and Carl Stokes. Many beautiful statues, and a pretty lake with benches to sit and enjoy the views and the peaceful atmosphere.

Beautiful cemetary. Great place for a walk. Garfield monument is great-outstanding views from the top. John D. Rockefeller buried here.

Visit the Wade Memorial Chapel to see Louis Comfort Tiffany’s tribute the founder of Western Union. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the interior of the chapel was designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany and has a stunning stained glass window, two walls with River of Life and River of Death mosaics and a mosaic tile floor. A guide was in the chapel during our visit with a short introduction/guide but ready to expand on the introduction if that aligned with visitor schedules. Photo doesn’t do it justice. You can also purchase a booklet to contribute towards the upkeep of the chapel. If you go to the top of the hill where many members of the Wade family rest, you may be able to catch a glimpse of Lake Erie between the trees.
Also visit the Garfield Memorial (seasonal attraction as it’s only open during warmer months), the resting place of former President James A Garfield. Beautiful dome, stained glass windows and mosaics. You can ascend the stairs for a closer of p the dome, then ascend further stairs for a view from the balcony. You can then descend to the crypt. The memorial underwent cleaning and repairs during COVID with plans for further repairs. Team onsite had an e excellent concise introduction to the 20th President of the United States and the monument. You can contribute to the upkeep/repairs for a beautiful poster or a booklet, both making nice souvenirs with beautiful photos.
Of the notable legacies, John D Rockefeller may be one of the most recognised.

Both of my parents are buried her. As well as President Roosevel, Elliott Ness, and other notables. There are Mosoleums.

It is a very peaceful and beautiful cemetery to come and look around at. Make sure you check out the Garfield Memorial!

Founded in 1869, Lake View Cemetery, a private cemetery is modeled after the great garden cemeteries of Victorian England and France and has over 109,000 graves. There are awesome views of Lake Erie from various places. Although anyone regardless of religion, race, gender, or economic status may be buried here, there are many people of note buried here. Besides James Garfield, there is Elliot Ness, J.D. Rocckefeller, Haserot Angel, Charles F. Brush, Harvey Pekar, and so many more. At the time it was poured in 1978, the cemetery contained the largest concrete-poured dam east of the Mississippi holding 80M galls of water. Don't forget to see Wade Chapel with its lovely Tiffany windows.
This is a lovely cemetery and if you have the time and enjoy history, you will enjoy your stop. Get a map at the visitors center.
We had figured an hour at the most, but spent closer to two hours and thus did not get to go into Grant's Mausoleum so that is a stop for our next trip to Cleveland.

I never thought I'd want to go to a cemetery during down time on a work trip but tagged along with some colleagues and truly enjoyed checking out Garfield's tomb and the beautiful serene landscape in this intriguing place. It is definitely worth stopping here and reflecting on the history of this area and the lives of those buried here.

Sounds crazy to spend an afternoon in a cemetery, but it feels more like a park with a lot of history. Garfield's monument is the obvious stand-out here, but it is like a trip through Cleveland's storied history with all of the rich and powerful buried there in their splendid mausoleums. It's especially beautiful in the fall, when the leaves are changing. Very peaceful - you'd never know you're practically in the middle of the city!

We don't usually visit cemeteries while on vacation, but Lake View Cemetery was definitely worth the time we spent here. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has former President James A. Garfield's Monument located here.
If wandering through the cemetery, be careful where you walk...lots of bird residue you don't want to walk in.

This place is a hidden gem, the pictures just don't capture the beauty of the surroundings. We will definitely visit again when given the time.

If a history buff this cemetery is a must see. From president Garfield,John Rockefeller,,Eliot Ness to many famous people you don't know. Simply search there name off their headstone and you'll find many founders of corporations, judges, political leaders ,inventors etc. a treasure trove of who's who.

A beautiful setting with lovely landscaping and very interesting monuments. In addition to the Garfield monument where President Garfield is buried, there is a considerable number of very large, ornate, or unique monuments. There are some very old trees and many beautiful flowers. I expected there to be more walking paths, but since it is a cemetery the traffic is nothing to be concerned about when walking on the road. It is quite hilly.

Beautiful landscaped grounds. Many famous (and more not-so-famous) Clevelanders and former Clevelanders rest here. Visiting the Garfield tomb is a must, as is the Wade tomb.

you can help being in awe when you're next to John D. Rockefeller's obelisk or in the Tiffany designed Wade Chapel. the Wade Chapel is one of two Tiffany designed buildings left in this country. its free and to see the Tiffany mosaics is a must for any art enthusiast or Tiffany fan. see John Hay's final resting place, the Van Sweringens and many others Fall is a great time of year to visit

We were so pleased that we took time to visit this histoirc cemetery. We saw the mammoth resting place of President Garfield and the monuments to John D. Rockefeller, pioneering disc jockey Alan Freed and lawman Eliot Ness. Visitors should also see the majestic Wade Chapel.

Yesterday, a friend of mine and I got a wonderful tour of Lake View Cemetery via a golf cart accompanied by one of the cemetery's representatives (I am not going to give his name in this review for privacy issues)...but it was a wonderful tour and I saw places in this cemetery that I have never seen....it's that huge. I have visited this cemetery for years and could give my own tour to people who have never been there, but there are so many stories to tell that it would take forever to get through just one area of interest. I love Victorian style cemeteries with wonderful Romanesque statues and this cemetery has a number of them. Each section (you have to get a map because the numbers don't necessarily jive) has people who have tales to tell, whether they were noted or famous in their life or not. There have been some books written about the cemetery and some of the inhabitants....but a really good book would probably weigh a ton because of the amount of graves located here. FYI, section 10 is the "millionaire's section"....but then, there are lots of sections that had millionaires there too. I am not going to get into who is buried in this section, but John D. Rockefeller and his family is here, even if he left Cleveland on questionable terms.
As for the Garfield Monument...it is in the process of being restored and cleaned. It is a very interesting stone building (mausoleum), but I find the grounds to be much more interesting. As for attractiveness, the Wade Chapel is much lovelier with Tiffany stained glass windows and wonderful mosaics of the new and old testaments of the bible on opposing walls. There is a small pond behind the chapel with fake swans that look like the real birds. There is a "nature trail" for those who want to be buried or ashes buried that is seen by walking or by golf cart. There is a large dam that is used to curtail the water flow from Cleve. Hts. in heavy rains so Euclid Avenue and East Cleveland doesn't flood. There are magnificent old trees, an abundance of wildlife....just a wonderful place to visit. But....if you bring your dogs, bring a bag to clean up after them. Also, you can't go speeding through the streets (this is private property....not a thruway to get from here to there) and there are lots of speed bumps in the streets. One more thing...for you "rock and rollers", Alan Freed's ashes are buried here (after the new manager of the Rock Hall of Fame came into power and felt his ashes didn't belong there (he only coined Rock and Roll....it's a museum, duh...anyway, his ashes are better off here with a wonderful granite headstone that is made to look like a jukebox). And, Eliot Ness and family has a large bolder type of stone near Wade Chapel....but his ashes (& family) were dumped in the pond behind the chapel a number of years ago...but he was famous around the country, but ended up in Cleveland forever.

How exciting/interesting can a cemetery be? This one is really cool. President Garfield’s memorial is incredible—with views from the terrace all the way out to Lake Erie. Wade Chapel is also magnificent. Drive or walk around and see unique grave markers, mausoleums and beautiful grounds. They say you can’t take it with you, but those buried here wanted to let you know what they had; very showy tributes. The pond is beautiful; a very peaceful oasis in the middle of metro Cleveland.
Interesting for those of all ages!

It is not easy to find, but with GPS you can do it. Stop at the house and get a map. The Garfield memorial is something to see we were to late to get a tour, but we did have a tour at the Wade Chapel which is just beautiful, stained glass windows and mosaics of the old and new testament. The Alan Freed gravestone is a juke box. Eliott Ness is also buried there. Definitely worth a trip.

My parents were visiting me in the Cleveland area and I was trying to find something that they would enjoy that wasn't overly strenuous. My dad is in his 70s and had to take it a little slower on some of the hilly areas. We found a nice little wooded nature walk right by the grave of Eliot Ness. We spent a couple of hours driving around and walking areas as we could.
The grounds of this cemetery are absolutely beautiful and well-kept. All of the staff we encountered were very friendly. Some visitors weren't great at observing the posted speed limit, which doesn't feel safe when there aren't sidewalks, but they would usually slow down when they got close.
I would definitely recommend this because of the beauty, but it's probably not for everyone. My parents and I enjoyed it!

Do take a real tour & then take your Friends or anyone for a tour. Its Spooky Tackler but so BEAUTIFUL! Oh Oh I took my kids for a Picnic at Garfields Tomb. They thought I was nuts but then they got to see things sitting down & were amazed by the Beauty all around us.

This place is unbelievable!! Iv been in the funeral business for almost 20 and Iv never seen a cemetery as pretty as this place and so peaceful!!

This attraction probably makes a little more sense if you realize that Cleveland was one of the largest, richest, and most important cities in the country around 1900. This cemetery, which is maybe a square mile on a large hillside, is the beneficiary of that history.
To start, this attraction is really three on this site, the cemetery itself, the James Garfield monument, and the Wade chapel. The monument and chapel are maybe 500 yards apart and in the most interesting area of the cemetery, so you'll want to see them all together. Note that the chapel and monument close relatively early (around 4:00), so you'll want to arrive somewhat before then.
Lakeview is full of grand monuments that are interesting for both historical and artistic reasons. As to history, you'll find the graves/monuments of famous people like President James Garfield (assassinated in 1881), John D. Rockefeller, Eliot Ness (of Untouchables fame, and later mayor of Cleveland), the founders of Sherwin-Williams and Glidden, and many others. If you're at all familiar with Cleveland or its history, you'll recognize many of the names on the monuments, particularly around section 10 and the Wade Chapel and Garfield monument.
From an artistic standpoint, the views are beautiful - you can see out over Lake Erie, and the cemetery has a park-like feel with lots of trees, hill sides, and landscape features. Many of the tombs have intricate art. The Jeptha Wade chapel in particular (which you can enter) was designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany's studio and has stunning artwork inside, including a large stained glass window and large mosaics. You'll frequently find art students or photographers using the sights as inspiration.
Garfield's monument is itself ornate and there are great views from the top.
There is a map of sorts as you enter from the Mayfield Road/Cleveland Heights side, but there are also paper maps available in places like the Wade Chapel. You might also want to look on line for some of the more famous markers.
I would come here on a nicer day and mostly walk around. On a clear day or in the fall, it is very beautiful here.

Visited Historic Cemetery & enjoyed a blues band concert- we brought a picnic basket & bottle of wine. It was cool listening to good music with past presidents & other Historic people. They have summer concert series it was fun!

This is an incredible cemetery. I couldn’t get over how beautiful this place is. Definitely going to come back since I didn’t get to take it all in. I could spend a whole day here. I came to find the Haserot Angel with no map, which I eventually found after driving around a little bit.

An architectural, sculptureal and historic venue. The Wade Memorial Chapel with the stunning Tiffany stained glass window and captivating mosaics is a remarkable stop. The Garfield Memorial and Tomb is awe-inspiring. If you are physically able, be sure to trek up to the "porch", an open, upper-level area that features the most spectacular views of the cemetery, Lake Erie and the downtown Cleveland skyline. Take a slow drive through the cemetery to enjoy the range of elaborate markers, both oder and newer.

Lakeview is a beautiful park, as a retired funeral director we tour Cemeteries regularly, and this is the most beautiful park we've ever seen. The leaves were in full Fall spendor and the statuary was impressive. The subject of our tour was seeing Alan Freed's burial place, but the Ness and the Harvey Pekar Graves were an unexpected surprise. If you're in a car, drive over to the park for a nice change of pace experience.

Lakeview Cemetery is filled with memorials to Cleveland's most affluential family members as well as locals and from nearby communities. The layout is very outstanding and is a well manicured landscape. I have only visited during family funerals and really found it to be very much the best cemetery i have ever seen. So rich with history. as i read the other reviews i think i need to visit in the fall as i have always been in winter and spring.

Cleveland's most historical site. President Garfield's monument is here. My ancestors are buried here, so it has special significance. It has lovely grounds, where many people picnic and walk/jog. One can explore the gravestones of many famous people. A favorite activity of my family is to pick up pizza from Little Italy just around the corner and have a picnic on the grounds.

We had fun on Lolly the Trolley at the LVC. Good historical review and the chapel is beautiful. The Garfield Monument also was interesting and they provided a nice overview.

I had always heard that Lakeview Cemetary was a must-visit place to see. Both because of the historical giants buried there, and the sheer beauty of the grounds. We spent an entire day there a week ago and it did not disappoint. From the amazing President Garfield monument, the Rockefeller site, and the beautiful sites of numerous other Cleveland historical figures. Easy to see why a national website has it listed as one the ten cemeteries to visit in the United States. One day was not enough. We are going back in the spring.

Unfortunately I was there for a burial service. But it was really a unique experience inside Masoleum where the loved ones remains were being put to rest. I never saw someone placed into the wall like that before. However, the site itself is so beautiful.!!!!!

You may not think about going to a cemetery on your trip, but this one is a must see!!! The President Garfield tomb and the Ward Chapel are both amazing! The docents in each were so knowledgeable and willing to share the history and details of the gorgeous art! Walking around to see the beautiful monuments throughout the cemetery was interesting as well. Pick up a map at the chapel. We spent a few hours here.

This rolling cemetry, locate at the top of Little Italy is a wonderful place to explore. Graves of John D Rockefeller, Elliot Ness and other notables can be found here. You can get a map from the entrance, but they are clearly marked as you drive the wandering roads. Trees, plants and in the spring , daffodils give it a park like setting. Don't miss the Wade Chapel and McKinley Monument. View of downtown, the lake and surrounding areas are wonderful. You see families playing, people picnicking, it is a great spot..

This is a great place to visit. I got a wonderful map from the office as well as some good tips. High point was Wade Chapel: beautiful murals and a wonderful, restful spot. I also enjoyed what they call millionaire's row (where some of the richest folks from Cleveland's past are buried) as well as Garfield's memorial, and the dam (yes, they have their own dam). Worth the drive. Do not miss.

Spacious grounds with amazing tombstones..do not miss if in the area..very close to Little Italy and Art Museum

Beautiful and serene cemetary. The roads throughout the cemetary are lined with gorgeous flowering trees in the spring, ducks everywhere and beautiful gravestones. President Garfield is laid to rest in his crypt in the cemetary.

It is a very large cemetery with lots of interesting headstones, monuments and mausoleums in a nature preserve type of setting. The place is very lush and green, with plenty of birds and a lake and we even saw a deer. The James Garfield Mausoleum is very impressive, but if you take the time to look around you will find a lot of other smaller interesting memorials. The grounds are enormous, so you can spend 20 to 30 minutes driving around and looking at stuff.

From 1880 to 1910 during that 30 year. 50% of the millionaires in the United States lived in Cleveland Ohio the richest man in the world Rockefeller had an oil refinery on the Cuyahoga River Carnegie the steel man was here and many people who started up department stores Banks and businesses lived in Cleveland because it was a River City it was a booming City therefore the people in the cemetery are millionaires they competed to have Architects bring in headstones of statues for their graves President Garfield is buried here his Monument is like walking in a church the wait Chapel is here the number one Tiffany room in the world walking paths picnic tables unlike any other Cemetery I must see they even do Buster's of this Cemetery Eliot Ness is also here

It's weird to love a cemetery, but Lake View is phenomenal. The huge, ornate, magnificent monuments; the rolling hills and beautiful natural scenery; the solitude; the views of downtown and the lake; the history. It's just a gem. The amount of noteworthy headstones/monuments/mausoleums is also impressive and is worth doing a little homework about the place.

We went to Garfields tomg, Rckefellas and Haserot Angel. Rockefellas isnt labelled on the map so we had to ask. Garfields was amazing and glad we went to the Haserot but amazed at the hype. Bring a dime and place on Rockefellas
for prosperity.

Surprisingly, Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio is not only a cemetery, but a tourist destination as well!
After having lunch in Little Italy, my daughter suggested we visit Lake View Cemetery. Living just 45 minutes away, I had never even heard of this much visited cemetery.
Lake View Cemetery was founded in 1869 by a group of Cleveland businessmen and is the resting place for many significant people including James A. Garfield, our 20th President of the United States.
Visitors come from near and far to view the spectacular architecture and park-like grounds. Visitors can take a self-guided tour or take a tour by trolley. Three of twelve significant people who have made this cemetery their final resting place is James A. Garfield, John D. Rockefeller and Elliott Ness.
If you plan a visit to Lake View Cemetery, be sure to visit the James A. Garfield and Wade Monuments. You won't be disappointed.

Went to see garfield's tomb, stayed to see tombstones for John d. Rockefeller, Alan freed, Harvey pekar, elliot nest, and other illuminaries. Beautiful grounds, very easy to get around by car, bike or just walking. Would go back if in the area.

Sadly it was a funeral but lea need it was the oldest with massive stones and famous people buried there like a past president. Also learned they have concerts in the summer.

Our garden club toured Lakeview with docent, Diana, yesterday, September 18. The weather was perfect and Diana's clear presentation of the history and artistry in the Wade Chapel was absolutely fascinating. She also showed us some of the most interesting gravesites and of course, the Moses Cleaveland trees. Many of us continued on to the Garfield monument and then to Little Italy for lunch. We are inspired to return. For those who find walking difficult, I would say that the visit to the Wade Chapel alone was worth the trip.

I was intrigued by descriptions of famous people buried in the cemetery. If you stop by office they have a booklet for $5.00 that will give all the information about the cemetery you'll ever want to know and staff will also provide a free map and have someone come to the front to help guide you. There was a docent in the Wade chapel that was very knowledgeable about the interior and all the beautiful details you may not notice at first and the meanings of each, then the unusual alan f headstone (looks like a jukebox) was nearby other noteable were Rockefeller and President Garfield tomb (which will be undergoing exterior work to bring back original color). This is a must see and is unique and quite large. If you're interested in presidential gravesites this is a must see. You'll probably spend around 2 hrs there depending on how much walking you choose to do

Make sure to visit Wade’s chapel. Docent was very knowledgeable. Also saw JD Rockafeller’s grave, Eliot Ness, James Salisbury, the memorial to the 20th president (James Garfield) and numerous others.

My sister and I visited this cemetary in the fall and the trees had all turned, it was beautiful. The layout with the rolling hills is very peaceful. The Haserot Angel is not to be missed, very eerie. We visited the Garfield Memorial with it's beautiful marble interior and grand steps, as well as the Rockefeller grave. It's just a beautiful cemetary to drive thru if you don't even get out of your vehicle.

I find this cemetery to be very fascinating. There are such old stones and they actually tell the store of the family, names, ages what they did for a living, very interesting. the grounds are immaculate.

We went there primarily to see the Wade Chapel and Garfield tomb but the cemetery was really interesting. The woman at the Garfield tomb gave us a map and pointed out multiple things we needed to see. Everything she recommended was good. We were probably there less than an hour but it was worth the stop.

Visiting a graveyard may sound a bit spooky or sad. Not the case with Lake View Cemetery. This is so much more. The stones are all so personalized and unique, they make a statement about the person. Allen "Rock 'N Roll" Freen's stone was a jukebox design. The President Garfield monument was church-like with stained glass, mosaics and marble/granite. We climbed to the top of it and had an amazing view of the lake and downtown Cleveland. Funny, they had to post a sign in there saying to refrain from playing Pokemon-Go. The most beautiful part was the Wade Chapel. It was designed by Tiffany's and is just breathtaking with the amount of detail. FYI-the Wade Chapel and the Garfield monument are only opened April 1 - November 19, from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m

The architecture, landscape and history of this cemetery (and the famous people buried here) make it a great place to visit, especially spring through summer.

I've lived in Cleveland my whole life and just visited Lake View this morning. It is beautiful. Can't believe it took me so long to visit. Its peaceful and so historical. I definitely recommend walking around and seeing everything.

First stop at the main office and go inside and ask to have a map . This is a huge cemetery with lots of beautiful park like settings and famous people that are laid to rest there. President Garfield and his family , Elliot Ness and Rockefeller are all there and easy to find .
There are no bathrooms around any other parts but we did one in Garfield's building downstairs . Bring your camera and take some amazing photos. We spent about two hours here enjoying every minute.

Very powerful gravesite. One just has to see it to appreciate and understand the power of this site and moment. Take your time to put the monument in perspective and know the history. Supposed to be cursed but who knows.

Lake view cemetery has alot of historical monuments there as well as alot of history and very important people that made cleveland a thriving city back in the day including one president the most famous statue is the hasarot angle I think I spelled it right maybe not but this is a a place to come walk around and find a bunch of interesting things while respecting the dead and showing your respect

I have some family buried here so I visit once in a while. It is a huge and beautiful old cemetery with large monuments and gardens. If you visit go to the top of the Garfield memorial to see one of the most amazing veiws of the Cleveland area. I assure you that you will not be disappointed

Must see to believe. Park light setting nice landscaping walking path. President Garfield is buried here. Wade Chapel best Tiffany Room in the world. Many sculptured headstones. Many famous people buried here. Including Rockefeller who started Standard Oil. I've been here over 25 times. Love it!

Easy to get to. Wonderfully arranged. Monuments to be seen not just online but best in person. Some very old style. President Garfield's is awesome, tall, decorative, huge, and excellent craftmanship. Saw it in March and hoped to go inside, but found out that the cemetery allows visitors inside beginning in April. Will be a must-see if ever back in Cleveland during the months his place of entombment is open for visitors.

Beautiful cemetery. In the spring they have daffodil hill that is just beautiful when in full bloom,
Lots of historical persons buried here and it is easy to find them due to the markings in the cemetery.

Best cemetery ever seen in beautiful setting. Craftsmanship of stonemasons originally from Italy makes it memorable.

The most profoundly beautiful, restful places I know. My partner and I purchased our resting place here and I am so much at peace. Truly a spiritual experience.

I would never make a cemetery a destination while on vacation, but this place is a absolute must see!Take the self guided tour with your own car & radio as the guide.

Lake View Cemetery is a must visit for photographers, history buffs & anyone who enjoys the beauty of the outdoors and/or cemeteries. Lake View is a very park-like setting where one could literally get lost for hours walking. There are ponds, a dam, trails and you are even allowed to bring your dogs, as long as they are leashed. President Garfield & his wife are entombed in their own memorial building, which is beautiful. Many well-known local & national celebrities are buried there from a Rockefeller, to Elliot Ness, to Alan Freed & Harvey Pekar. This is one of my favorite places to take visitors & I always manage to see something new every time I visit. Love Lake View!

Lake View is always in mint condition. Unfortunately the McKinley Memorial is under construction so access is limited but still worth going.

As crazy as it sounds, a visit to the Lakeview Cemetary is actually quite cool and historic. Cleveland has a rich history of dignitaries and famous, wealthy individuals. The grounds are immaculately kept & it’s truly worth a tour to see the history & glamour of 19th century CLE!

Was amazed at the beautiful memorial of President Garfield. I have never been more impressed! Very knowledgeable volunteer was there and heart-fully explained a lot of interesting information regarding his memorial. It cost $136,000 to build at the time! Comparable to 3,000,000 today!! President Garfield and his wife are entombed there, as their caskets are on full display as well as there children’s urns. The tile work is magnificent as well as the view of Cleveland from a top.

We enjoyed walking through the cemetery and visiting the Garfield tomb. Beautiful tomb and a great view of Cleveland from the top.

We went to this cemetery to see the grave of President Garfield.and found out Elliott Ness . is buried here also. This is a beautiful cemetery with President Garfield's grave/mausoleum sitting on top of the hill. Unfortunately, we were here in late March, and we could not enter the beautiful mausoleum.

A quiet green park with history and architecture....take a drive through the quiet side roads and get a glimpse of the history of the city.

A really lovely cemetery in a park setting with rolling hills and lots of trees all shapes and sizes plus colorful flowering trees here and there. Since I knew we would have limited time on our visit, and that the office would not be open, I did my research online to identify the sites I wanted to see and note their section numbers and download a map from the cemetery website. We were able to readily locate the Garfield Memorial and the Rockefeller Obelisk but despite having the map with some sites noted, we still couldn't find the Haserot Angel or the Eliot Ness memorial. A more specific map available online and more signs in the cemetery would have been helpful. Still was an enjoyable visit...hope to return someday when we have more time to see it all!

I'm not usually a "cemetery person": I don't seek out cemeteries when we travel. Even the famous ones. The only reason i wanted to visit this one is because of the number of high ratings it has on TripAdvisor. I am so glad we visited. It was a worthwhile visit and very easy to navigate by car if you don't want to walk all of it.
I recommend you start at the cemetery office, located at the Euclid entrance. There are brochures and maps (get the map!), and see if there is an advisor in the office who can help you figure out where to drive (or walk). Karen did just that for us, and she is perfectly enthusiastic about the cemetery and what's worth seeing. She also takes tours on golf carts, and you'll need to contact her in advance for tours of 3-5 people. They also offer Lolly the Trolley tours on Sundays in the summer if you book them in advance.
In addition to the highlights others have mentioned (Wade Chapel, Garfield Memorial), this is a great place to see where lots of local "celebrities" have been buried. There are over 100-thousand people buried in this huge park-like setting, and it's not just a historic cemetery. There are people still being buried at Lake View, and the cemetery projects they won't fill their space for another 100 YEARS.

Many interesting areas. Garfield tomb was very interesting. Elliot Ness tomb is also located here. Just an interesting way to spend a couple of hours.

Just shame on me. Lived in Cleveland 69 years. Knew of Lake View Cemetery but never visited. I am going back, and back. Cultural, historical and beautiful. Beside the prestigious and interesting grave sites you must go into the Wade Chapel. Tiffany glass window worth over $2 million telling lifes story, old and new testament murals of glass fill the walls, marble floors and more. This chapel was created by Jeptha Wade's grandson to honor his grandfather and he exceeded the mark.
Jeptha Wade was one of the founders of Western Union Telegraph. I have seen the churches of Europe, this little chapel is stellar and a must see. I hope my chapel guide is around. She is a one of a kind in delivery and knowledge. When concluded drive around the corner to Little Italy for sustenance.

A beautiful cemetery which has some of the most awesome statues through the winding roads. There are many famous and wealthy Clevelanders located there. Among them is Elliot Ness, Rockefeller and President Garfield. Also located near the small pond is the Wade Chapel with Tiffany glass, which is usually open .during the day. Many people enjoy walking / jogging / or having lunch inside the cemetery. If you are looking for a great place to sit and read a book, walk in peace, or try to find all the famous people, It makes for a great peaceful moment in history.

I visit lots of cemeteries and this is absolutely one of the best I have ever been to. First off, the nature here is wonderful. There are tons of trees and greenery to enjoy and keep you cool even on hot days. The cemetery is easy to find and easy to drive around in. There are so many beautiful old gravestones here you could spend many hours wandering around. There are also some famous people buried here as well as a wonderfully beautiful and creepy angel statue that is supposed to be haunted. This is a must visit if you are in the Cleveland area.

Not as many famous people here, but some interesting grave sites and headstones. My husband especially liked Roy Chapman's baseball themed headstone. The Wade Chapel is beautiful. Worth an hour or so while seeing President Garfield's memorial/mausoleum.

The best cemetery on our trip! So much history and so many famous people. Beautiful tributes to loved ones as well. A must visit!!

I know it's a cemetery, but this is one of my favorite places in Cleveland because it is so beautiful. Gorgeous landscaping, and fill of grand monuments, especially the Garfield Monument and the Wade Chapel. Full of history and full of important dead people.

Interesting sites to visit. Wade Chapel is very nice. Rock and Roll Hall of fame is at least A 4 HOUR visit.

This cemetery is just gorgeous, filled with beautiful plants and memorials . We walked around for more than 2 hours and could have spent more time. Gorgeous mosaics and stained glass in the chapel, and the docent was very knowledgable.

Cemeteries might not be the destination of choice when on vacation, but Lake View Cemetery is definitely worth a visit, both for the extensive history and the glorious nature. The Wade Memorial Chapel, designed by Louis Tiffany (son of the renowned jeweler), and the James Garfield Memorial are the most famous monuments on site, but there are countless of others notable graves and mausoleums. The park is a gem on itself, with hills, ponds, creeks and even a concrete dam, and a new visual perspective at every turn.
A big thank you to Wayne, the guide at the Wade Memorial Chapel, for his knowledge and passion for art and history, and for his friendliness.

This cemetery is full of history and beauty. Spring , Summer and Fall are the best times to visit. They offer tours as well.

We found ourselves with 2 hours and came to see the Tiffany window and the resting place of James Garfield. No luck...who would have thought that in the summer, on the weekend that these places would close at 4 p.m. What a disappointment. We drove through looking for Rockerfellers and Elliott Ness, but never found the sections. Big, beautiful graveyard, but very hard to find your way around by car, and we were unable to find a map online that was helpful for navigation. It is a big place!
The summertime and the weekend are when folks are visiting the most... why not stay open until at least 6 p.m., since the sun goes down about 7:45! We found this to be true for many things...even the beautiful St. John's church, closed at 3 on Sunday!
Really too bad, Cleveland.

Lake View Cemetery is huge there are so may old headstones to see and some new ones also, its a well maintained. It will take a couple hours to drive through if and see everything.

Modeled after the great garden cemeteries of Victorian England Lake View Cemetery is comprised of 285 landscaped acres adjacent to the neighborhood of Little Italy. There are numerous monuments, mausoleums and tributes to honor individuals who have impacted the Cleveland area as well as our nation. Some key sites include those of President Garfield, J,D. Rockefeller, The Vans, Jeptha Wade (Chapel), A.O. Stone, H. Cushing, Dr. Crile, Glidden, Sherwin, Alan Freed and Ray Chapman.
Other unique offerings include: weddings and baptisms at Wade Chapel, summer concerts at the Garfield Memorial, Run Through History 5k/1k run/walk, Lolly the Trolly tours, Wreath Laying Ceremony, Schwan Christmas Tree Trimming, Memorial Day service, Holiday program of music and lights, school tours and educational sessions.
We spent about three hours walking the grounds which was perfect for our afternoon visit on a sunny autumn day. The cemetery is very beautiful with horticultural and architectural gems. Thanks to the docents, for all were accommodating and knowledgeable. I highly recommend a stop at the “9/11 Memorial” at the Mayfield entrance. There is a small section of a girder from the Twin Towers encased in a display. So you can see Lake View is not your typical resting place. While viewing a cemetery is not for everyone it was a delightful, informative and reverent time for us.

Cemetery is pretty. We specifically came to see where James Garfield is buried. On the website it said it was open until 2:30. We got there a lot earlier than that and it was closed. Kind of disappointing.

Beautiful cemetery. Don't miss Wade Chapel! The tour of the chapel was informative. The Garfield monument has a vice view of the city from the top.

Also, visit Wade Chapel. The entire inside was done by the Tiffany studio. Get a list of all of the important people buried here...they are in the Garfield Memorial.

Very well kept and very picturesque. The Garfield Monument stands out. Limited hours so didn't go inside. Elliot Ness and John Rockefeller burial sites are at the cemetery. The architecture of the crypts and tombstones are amazing pond and Chapel area was very serene.

Great for a day trip, beautiful grounds, full of history. Visit the Garfield monument, take a walk on the wooded paths, which also contain bench and boulder memorials. Enjoy the artistry and notice how the styles of monuments and markers changed over the decades. Stop and pay your respects at the veteran's cemetary and rejoice in the freedoms we enjoy due to their ultimate sacrifice. Then stop by Little Italy and visit Presti's for lunch!

This cemetery is more like a park, a beautiful park. Stroll the grounds or take a tour, you'll be surprised by who you see or walk over. Great vistas of the lake and Cleveland. See where Eliot Ness, Alan Freed (great headstone), President Garfield are laid to rest along with many more of the Cleveland rich and famous. Looking forward to returning in the spring to see the hill of daffodils.

This old cemetary is exquisite. Many of the shakers of early Cleveland are buried here and their graves are marked with a little history about them. Wonderful place to unwind.

This is a beautiful and historic place to visit. There is much to see and workers are very helpful. We will visit again.

My wife and I enjoyed our guided tour of the Lakeview Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio while visiting the area in early September 2018. The entire cemetery was very well kept and gorgeous when we were there. The flowers were blooming and the trees were green from recent rain. Also there are very unique monuments and statues throughout the cemetery. It is beauty mixed with culture. This enormous historical cemetery is the resting place of many notable names like President Garfield, Eliot Ness, and John D. Rockefeller. The artistry and scale of some of the monuments was amazing. The Lakeview Cemetery is one of Cleveland’s most beautiful landmarks and we would certainly include it on a must see list of anyone visiting the area.

The Lake View Cemetery is a beautiful and large (285 acres) cemetery and is located 6 miles east of downtown Cleveland and is open daily at 7:30 AM. It is also very close to Case Western Reserve University. There are about 105,000 people buried here and there is a lot of empty space for future burials. This cemetery was founded in 1869. There is no fee to enter this museum and they give out free cemetery maps if you stop by the Visitor Center. The map leads you around the cemetery and points out the famous graves and buildings.
I toured this cemetery with my wife on a Thursday evening in mid-August and enjoyed this beautiful and historic cemetery. I especially enjoyed the huge President Garfield Monument (and the great views from near the top of it) and the Wade Memorial Chapel which was designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany and his studios. The 3 most famous people buried here are President Garfield, Eliot Ness and John D Rockefeller.
Overall I enjoyed visiting this cemetery and recommend it (especially if you are a history buff). I recently read a book on Rockefeller and was interested in seeing his final resting place. In my opinion, the Garfield Monument and the Wade Memorial are the highlights and are not to be missed.

As far as visiting cemeteries go, this one is well worth your visit. Though the name of the cemetery makes you feel it is stationed on top of a hillside or next to the lake, it really offers no exceptional (or any) lake view (at least from what we experienced). There are a variety of very nice grave markers and tombstones throughout the site. The highlights are the James A Garfield monument (make sure you visit this before it closes at 4 pm) and the John D. Rockefeller grave. You would imagine a much more elaborate area for Rockefeller, but it is in fact a very simple tombstone and plain obelisk. Still, neat to see.

We learned about the Cemetery on our mission to find the Grand Garfield Monument while visiting Little Italy. We entered at the Mayfield Gate and winded through the cemetery which is well marked for directions to Garfield Monument. We found a lot more on our drive - seeing all the well kept graves and monuments. I was surprised that there wasnt better parking option at the Garfield Monument as many people were parking all over the road/grass.

Just a beautiful cemetery/arboretum - with plenty to see and beautiful grounds to just walk in. Some notable “famous” local/global celebrities are buried there - and plenty of neat headstones to check out (went specifically to see Allen Freed’s “Jukebox” headstone (see pics). Well worth a stop!

As a photographer, I have visited many cemeteries. Lake View is my favorite by far. I went on a Sunday morning and spent five hours photographing the amazing statuary. The views from the top of the hill are fantastic also. It is ALOT of walking so wear comfortable shoes.

We quickly drove through and stopped to see the President Garfield monument. It was interesting to see, but a little sad the condition - needs cleaning.

The Wade Chapel is amazing because of the tile work and the history. This is a place to wander and spend hours.

Over 280 rolling acres containing thousands of grave sites and mausoleums including President Garfield, Rockefeller and Sherwin..from Sherwin Williams.
A walk up the hill from Little Italy. Good to combine the 2 together for a wonderful day.

If you haven't seen any other famous world cemetery, and at the same time have nothing else to do in Cleveland then come here.
The cemetery is in the eastern suburbs, some 15-20 min drive and apart from it, you have nothing else to do in the area.
The cemetery is nicely landscaped and well maintained with some beautiful graves and monuments like the Haserot Angel and famous historical figures like President Garfield and Rockefeller buried there.
However, only in the US much more interesting are the New Orleans cemetery and the Springfield, IL where President Lincoln is buried - let alone Pierre Lachaise in Paris or Recoleta in Buenos Aires.

So many beautiful stones in this amazing cemetery. From President Garfield to the Rockefellers and so many local celebrities. Just an amazing place to go for a walk on gorgeous day. Highly recommend

This place is more like a park than a cemetery. The grounds are beautiful and there are benches and picnic table scattered throughout the place. We saw many joggers and people walking dogs seemingly unaware they were in a cemetery. There are so many headstones in this cemetery that are unique, different, and dare I say, pretty? We enjoyed driving around the 285 acres of this beautiful resting place. It was very humbling paying our respects to President Garfield, John D Rockefeller, Eliot Ness and other greats who now call Lakeview home.

I buried my late wife here in 2003 and enjoy visiting here often. The beauty of the grounds and the park like atmosphere is very comforting. Has wonderful history and historical significance

I was surprised by the size of the cemetery. We stopped by the Garfield Memorial tho it was under renovation. Still impressive to see.

We Uber'ed here and enjoyed our stroll of the grounds. Plenty to see and read while you imagine the lives no longer here.

The cemetery is the burial place of President Garfield and a beautiful monument to him. It's truly beautiful inside the memorial and there's a great view of Cleveland from the top.
And the Tiffany Chapel is definitely worth a visit! The stained glass and mosaics are a sight to see!

Make sure you stop inside the entrances and pick up a map. This cemetery is so huge, you will not want to miss some of the highlights noted on the map. There is a suggested route to follow if you don't have unlimited time and can only see some of the best memorials, but I wanted to see as much as possible and the detailed map was extra helpful.
Some of the most important people of Cleveland's history are buried there. Don't miss it and plan extra time to walk around so you can read the inscriptions on the monuments.
Be sure to visit the Garfield Monument and the Wade Chapel!

A beautifully maintained cemetery.
A lot of interesting things to see, including President Garfield's monument (it was not open as it was being restored), the beautiful Tiffany Wade chapel, Eliot Ness cenotaph (his ashes were scattered in the nearby lake) as well as the grave of Ray Chapman, the only baseball player to die from an injury during an MLB game (he was hit by a ball).

From hiking to jazz this cemetary is actually an exciting place to visit. Grant is buried here and the chapel has a beautiful tiffany window. My favorite hike is an angel tour. Elliot Ness is buried here too. Hard to explain all the activities that are held here during the year. Another favorite is daffadill hill in the spring

This was recommended to us and we were glad we stopped by on our way out of town. Lovely cemetery and a great place for a walk. It was a beautiful sunny day and we enjoyed the peace and quiet and looking at many of the gravesites. Unfortunately, we could not go inside the beautiful Garfield Memorial as it was closed the day we visited.

This is a beautiful cemetery with interesting features - Wade Chapel, Garfield Monument and others. They do offer tours - check the website. In spring, the daffodils are fabulous!

We visited Lakeview Cemetery on a tour of Cleveland. Many famous people ( including one president) buried there.
We were taken on a tour also of the chapel which was amazing inside. The interior was tolally designed by Tiffany. Beautiful Tiffany stained glass plus art work on walls was made up of Tiffany glass

What a lovely place! The grounds are extensive and immaculately kept; there are hills, paved roadways, water features, etc. Among the notable gravestones are Elliot Ness, and Alan Freed. Wade Chapel is a gem, with a stunning Tiffany window, beautiful woodwork, and murals.

What a hidden gem tourist attraction of huge histostorical background! My good friend took me for a few hours. It was a beautiful day. We lost track of time and were mistakenly locked in! Yikes! All was well. Lake View Cemetery is a must on your visit list. Just be sure to leave enough time to really take the time to enjoy it's beauty.

This is a must see place. It is amazing to see the old tomb stones. It is so large you can't believe it. Way in the very back I saw a 1800 marker with a "stuffed bunny" still on it!! It is a nice place, just to be quit.

i know it's strange to say you can visit a cemetery if you're not visiting a loved one but this cemetery has history and is beautiful through the seasons especially the rooftop view

Lake View is so large, we didn't know where to begin. We were too late to visit the Garfield memorial, the late President is buried here, plus there was a Blue Grass festival taking place. Finally, we saw a facility security vehicle and asked if she had any maps or guides. She produced one instantly, pointing out the back of it listed the more prominent graves which aligned with numbers on the map itself.
I should note here that while she was speaking with us, two people went by on bicycles. She excused herself and told them biking is not allowed on the property (Lake View is privately held). She ordered them to walk their bikes. So do not expect to ride a bike around this beautiful cemetery cum park if you visit.
There are a number of well known people buried here in addition to Garfield, including crime-buster Eliot Ness, the first Black mayor of a major city (Cleveland) Carl Stokes, oil baron John D. Rockefeller and more.
Saying this cemetery is ordinary is like saying Paris is just another big city.

It's weird to review a cemetery, but it really is an interesting place.
I have attend funerals here too. But even just taking a drive thru you can appreciate the cemetery. History buffs would definitely appreciate a visit.

My mum and I went here last year specifically to see the angel on Elliot Ness's grave, it was somber and felt like I was visiting the tomb of a hero. Leaving there, you can go to the Garfield memorial and climb to the top and see a BREATH TAKING view of the cleveland skyline. It was definitely worth the drive from Cortland. I can't wait to go back again.

I was fortunate to live in the area for three years so was able to visit Lake
View often. First of all, it's very peaceful and quiet so it's a very relaxing experience when visiting and walking throughout. The monuments are beautiful and the landscaping is impeccable. The James A Garfield memorial is a work of art and I always met friendly and knowledgeable guides.

It is a beautiful park. Well, it is a cemetery but it feels like a park with loads of untold stories, of all the people who are burried there.

I love a good old fashioned rolling hilled cemetery filled with great huge gothic monuments & lots of interesting residents!! You'll get that & more with Lake View!! The highlight is the over the top mausoleum for a guy who was President for less than 4 months, then basically killed by his own doctors poking his infected wound with their grubby uneducated fingers!! Garfield deserved better!! Other famous folk rest in peace in this beautiful verdant oasis from the living, especially a personal hero of mine, the great artist, writer, provocateur & human being, Harvey Pekar…go pay homage to the creator of the great graphic novel series American Splendor & leave him a pen for his writin'!!!

I have always loved old 1800s cemeteries. They were designed to be places families could stroll and spend the day and this lovely old one is a perfect example. You'll see marvelous mausoleums, graceful statues, monuments the Wade Chapel with Tiffany glass and mosaics and a very knowledgeable guide. Then there is the Garfield Memorial as well, a little temple that took longer to build then he actually was president. Kids might find it dull but history buffs will recognize many of the names engraved on those old stones. ,

I love going to this cemetery, it has several entrances and always, always clean . The graves are clearly marked and everything is in place. You can visit anytime they are always open and ready for visitors. I sometimes just like to ride through the cemetery to look around there are so many different things to see it’s such a peaceful ride through there and it’s a long ride all the way around it’s hills and slopes curves and winding roads. Go up and take a ride through the place it’s nice.

Lake View Cemetery has so much to offer so I am going to tell you about my favorite. "Daffodil Hill". Depending on Cleveland' s winter this vision occurs middle of April. As you enter the cemetery there are signs to follow. As you follow the signs there are other trees, flowers leading up to the hill filled with daffodils. The panoramic sight is breathtaking.

Everything every other review has stated and more. Most times there is very little traffic here and you have freedom and quietness as would be expected in such a place. In spring, there is one particular hill that comes alive with yellow daffodils and in the fall, well, everything is rendered more lovely by the colors of the trees and perhaps if you like such things, a mood more befitting a cemetery. Though make no mistake, Lakeview isn't a maudlin place to mope and moan. It celebrates the life of many notable Cleveland residents that have been mentioned here in other reviews. Some headstones like Alan Freed are easy to find while others like that of comic book author Harvey Pekar are worth seeking out. Within the Garfield Memorial an attendant will be happy to give you a map of the notable tombstones.
There is a large lake with plenty of benches, should you need a rest from all your discovering. It's a big place with lots to see. Bring your cameras or... if you're inclined, your paintbrushes.
TIPS FROM A LOCAL:
1. Bikes are NOT permitted, nor are pets.
2. You can only park in designated areas. Do not park even on the side of the road a little in the grass or it's likely someone will come after you if they should see you walking from the car. I understand it's above all, people's resting place and should be respected. They can't just let anyone do anything, but I was just hopping out of the car for a photo and a very stern employee informed me that no Sir, I was not allowed to park on the side of the road even for a few minutes.Take heed!

It feels really weird recommending a cemetery as a tourist destination but this is definitely a must see! The Garfield Memorial is breathtaking, and the Wade Chapel is small but spectacular. Just walking the grounds is a day well spent. I drug two coworkers with me who thought I was a bit kooky for wanting to visit a cemetery and a memorial for a President they didn't know a thing about and both left with such a great appreciation and so pleasantly surprised by how much they loved it.

Loved our experience in visiting this historic cemetery! Granted, the weather prevented us from visiting it until the day we were leaving for home, but we at least got to have a couple hours to visit, as well as it was the first day of the season for the Garfield Monument to be open to the public, so that worked out perfectly. Kudos to the very kind & informative workers in the Garfield monument, they were true professionals & very knowledgeable to say the very least. Many historic grave sites to check out and make a day off. We'd love to come back some time in the Fall if they ever do guided tours. This is a definite must see whenever in town!

Make sure to visit the James A. Grafield Memorial - best on a sunny day because of the large amount of Tiffany Glass. May other Rich and Famous are buried there Rockefeller, Van Swerindens, Elliot Ness. If you are a baseball fan Ray Chapman (Cleveland Indian) is buried there. He was he only Major League Baseball player to die from a thrown pitch (1920 - picher Carl Mays (NYY)

I'm a huge fan of cemeteries-I've been to quite a few all over Ohio, PA, West Virginia and Colorado, this is by far the prettiest and BIGGEST one I've been to. I go here at least one or twice a year.

Lakeview cemetary is awesome! No I'm not a death crazed zombie lover, the grounds are some of the most beautiful in the city. Small chapel overlooking a small lake...breathtaking. At times they have outdoor art installations which just add to the beauty of this historic cemetary. Must see.

This is the place to go for local, regional, national and international history. It is also an arboretum and flower meca. The cemetery has a community relations department ready to assist tourists and visitors. They have walking and trolly tours for every interest. The property is well maintained and beautiful. Two best known achitectural sites are the President James A Garfield monument and the Jeptha Wade Chapel by Tiffany. Eliot Ness's remains were scattered here and is he is memorialized here. Bring a picnic and dine with the greats (and notorious!) of Cleveland.

Went to see the Garfield memorial which wasn't open - but still beautiful from outside - only open from April to November. However the entire cemetery is quite large and full of beautiful monuments. Definitely worth driving or walking around.

Went to see the President James A Garfield Memorial, however I was not aware that it is closed mid November thru April 1...so beware. I did find the Rockefeller Family plot which is under a large white obelisk to the left of the Garfield's memorial. Nice and hilly and lots of shade

We stopped to place flowers on our mom's grave on her birthday. The grass was mowed unevenly and our monument was soiled from rain from tree branches above (not trimmed) and grass clippings blown on to the face of the granite and never brushed off.
It appears that I will have to come with a bucket of soapy water and a scrub brush and a triu=immin clipper.

I never thought touring a cemetery could be so peaceful and interesting. From the elaborate headstones to the mausoleum it was a great way to get outdoors and learn interesting facts about the past. Be sure to get on one of the pages that tells you the location of the famous spots to visit.

Park like setting. Some famous people are remembered there. Great place to walk! The rooftop deck of the Garfield Monument has clear views of the city skyline. There is also a dam on site.

The Wade chapel and Garfield's monument are beautiful. In the summer look for Lolly trolley tours and free music. Great place for walking.

This is a cemetery but also a beautiful park where you can bike or walk your dog. Lots of beautiful trees and there are famous people buried here.

Lake View is a large cemetery. We stopped in Wade Chapel as well as President Garfield's memorial. Both were quite interesting and beautiful. There was a docent at each location who imparted a good deal of information about the sites. In addition, we drove around and came across the Eliot Ness gravesite.it wasa bit chilly and rainy the day we went, so we did not spend a lot of time walking around the cemetery. (We did walk around The pond by the Garfield Memorial). Enjoyed it

Who would have thought that a cemetery could be such a neat place to visit! Don't miss this stop! The presidential monument for President Garfield is just the beginning of neat things to see. The Tiffany Chapel is the real show! So nice that both of those locations have staff on hand to share details about them and answer questions. When you enter at the main gate stop and grab a map off of the office door. Lots of neat headstones and monuments to see!

Great history here - Garfield Memorial is an absolute and the Wade Chapel is some amazing history - great stones throughout - well worth the time to spend especially if you enjoy history - Elliot Ness, John D Rockefeller - a must stop if you are visiting Cleveland

I came here on a Sunday morning before visit f the Cleveland Museum of Art. I visited the James A. Garfield Monument which was quite nice and large! I would like to have a monument erected like this when I pass away! I also visited the Wade Chapel, which was also nice but not as nice as the James A. Garfield Monument. The cemetery has a lot of beautiful tombstones and tombs. There were several people hanging out in the cemetery, which was quiet and peaceful.

Hard to figure out why I needed to see a cemetery, but I did. I was glad we saw it. We drove around a lot because we couldn’t find Elliot Ness a first. Cleveland memorial was under renovation but the outside was beautiful. Do it. Stop and check it out. I would recommend they add a audio guide. Like one of those radio stations you tune into for a guided tour

One of the best views of the city is atop the Garfield Memorial. You can see for miles. The cemetery itself is so big it goes through three cites. Not only are billionaires buried there, but they're buried amongst presidents and lawyers like Elliot Ness. The tombstones here are all more mini monuments while some are actual ones. It's also a great place for a run or to read and write. I've gone with friends and solo and never have I gotten weird vibes.

A rare warm & sunny day in Nov had us looking for an outdoor experience and WOW, did Lake View deliver! Whether you are fond of exploring graveyards or not, you will find "persons of interest" here to make a walkabout worthwhile: assassinated President Garfield's tomb, graves of Elliott Ness, Allan Freed ("father of Rock and Roll"), Harvey Pekar (of Letterman fame), and many more. Elaborate large tombs including one full of Tiffany glass panels are a sight to behold by themselves. This graveyard is extremely well maintained, SAFE to wander in, well staffed, and very open and inviting for tourist exploration.

Even when unfortunate circumstances arise the Beautiful scenery here is calming and peaceful 😇
A Cleveland landmark

What a lovely destination to walk off all the food consumed in Little Italy and all the pastries gobbled from the West Side Market. Additionally, a lovely spot for walking off the stress of the day — the residents (and often pithy tombstone advice) can help put things into productive very quickly.
Additionally, this is a lovely spot for photos, for nature and wildlife lovers: in just our brief visit, we saw wild turkeys, colorful birds, and deer. Oh, we saw swans, too, but were laughing hard when we realized their role.
Those working at the cemetery on the day of our visit were cheerful and polite — if we’d had more time, a tour would have been lovely.
Highly recommended.

Great trip. Walkable city, lots to see and do. Good restaurant finds in all price ranges. Little more homeless folks then expected but never a concern for our safety.

Went there multiple times for the Sunday Concert Series held all summer long. It is held in front of the President Garfield Memorial.

We were told to visit by one of the staff members of museum of fine arts. We got to see The Rockefeller family plot and Elliot Ness plot. We were unable to go into President Garfield Memorial because it was closed for the season.

When we explore a city, we never leave without visiting their best cemetery. This one is it. Absolutely incredible! Do not leave Cleveland until you have seen Pres. Garfield’s Memorial, the Tiffany glass in Wade Chapel, the crying angel, Rockefeller’s obelisk, the comic book guy’s site (next to Elliott Ness) & Alan “Mr. Rock-n-Roll” Well done landscaping crew. Y’all raise the bar in cemetery caretaking.

Always a beautiful place to respectfully explore. There's so much history and beauty here, that you could forget that it's a burial space. A must stop if you're in the area - rain or shine. Download their info for self guided tours.

You would think that a cemetery would be a little creepy to “tour” but not true. First of all, it is beautiful! The grounds are peaceful and there is so much to see. There are a number of famous folks buried there, including Elliot Ness, John Rockefeller, and Harvey Pekar to name a few. Stop at the property office and get info to take the driving tour to see where the famous graves are. Of course, the Garfield monument and Wade Chapel are awesome and easy to find. I went in April to see the daffodils entirely blanketing a large hillside area-it’s gorgeous! They also have events throughout the year including walking tours and concerts.

In addition to seeing the extraordinary monument to President Garfield, it’s worth wandering around to see the incredible artistry in the monuments and memorials around the grounds. The memorial to Alan Freed (Cleveland DJ and father of the term “rock ‘n roll”) is a full sized carved in stone jukebox- just amazing!
The office was closed when we arrived, so we did not have a map and couldn’t find one online. I’ll attach a photo of the one we finally got. Also note that the Garfield monument closes an hour or more before the cemetery does.

Wow! The Garfield tomb is a stunning destination. The architecture. The view. The tomb. And there was a concert outside during our visit. The chapel was closed but we did get a glance at Rockefeller’s gravesite.

the grounds were being set up for a concert. everythibg was so well controlled and lovely.and the grounds were maintained for respect. well kept

Some friends and I drove almost 3 hours to tour this cemetery. The main thing we wanted to see was the sculpture Angel Of Death Victorious, the Haserot Angel. It is located in section 9. We also drove through taking in all the other sculptures and beautiful old tomb stones.

Thank you, Trip Advisor. Admittedly this is not everyone’s cup of tea. There is so much to see and do and it is all done very well.

This is a beautiful place. Humongous with interesting monuments and scenery. We came to see the Angel. There's a monument for President Garfield but, that's under repair. This place is way too big to walk but you call Park and find interesting things. The RTA stops here if you're familiar.

Visiting a graveyard may not be the first thing on your "to-do list" when visiting any city but many Americans today have forgotten that Cleveland was at one time one of the largest and most prominent cities in the United States with a rich (literal and figurative) history.
The gravestones of American figures including John D. Rockefeller, President James A. Garfield, James Barnett, Eliot Ness, Garrett Morgan (founder of the tri-color. traffic light and gas mask), Henry A. Sherwin (founder of the Sherwin-Williams company), and others can be found here on the grounds.
Statues and inscriptions of weeping widows, mighty archangels, life-sized ship anchors, broken columns and other mysterious masonic symbols can be found throughout the maze of ground and stone.
A staunch yet gentle reminder of our own history and mortality.
Visit before the sun sets.

The cemetery has so much history that it is a destination all to itself. We were there on Memorial Day weekend so the place was very well decorated.

It is a beautiful place with many unusual headstones, famous and infamous people are buried there along with President Garfield and his wife. The chapel has Tiffany stain glass windows and is a must see. It is open when the cemetery is open. You can see angels, many different versions of crosses, statues of people and so much more. It is a nice place to have lunch by the lake or walk your dog (clean clean up the poop). You will always see people walking or jogging and sometimes just reading the interesting quotes on the stones. It is gorgeous a must see if in Cleveland. It is right down the street from University Circle and Little Italy.

While it doesn't rival the Hollywood celebrity cemeteries or Arlington, this cemetery is beautifully maintained with many interesting headstones and monuments. The two highlights are the Wade Chapel, with an interior fully designed by Tiffany, and the President Garfield Memorial. We forget about the tragedy of his assassination, and learn more of his historical contributions. Near the Cleveland Art Museum, this is a nice place to visit on the same day.

I have both walked and driven in this large cemetery and I recommend driving because you can't possibly walk all of it and see everything. Final resting place for Elliot Ness, Alan Freed, John Rockefeller and, of course, President Garfield. We were not able to see inside the Garfield Memorial or the Wade Chapel because we went of season. I'm going back during the warmer season to see what I missed. Also, I recommend you stop in the office and talk to Karen. She will give you a map and point out interesting things to see so you don't miss anything.

This place is AWESOME. Soooo much history here. First off, President Garfields tomb is a must. Parts of his oval office are enshrined on the walls, and the architecture is fabulous. The chapel has a giant window made by Tiffany himself. You wouldn't know, but John D. Rockefeller was from Cleveland and is buried there. Eliot Ness was cleveland's safety director and is also buried there. Great names of the past and a wonderful to reflect with a quiet time.

I stopped by on a Friday afternoon and was so impressed with the staff there! I learned so much from two of the tour guides at the Garfield Memorial and Wade Chapel, they were so knowledgeable and engaging!

Walked up from Little Italy and walked around the cemetry, peaceful and serene, some beatiful monuments and memorials. Garfield's tomb was very interesting and absorbing, it closes early at 4pm though.

An absolutely beautiful cemetery steeped in rich history. The James Garfield Memorial was wonderful. Final resting place of not only James Garfield, our 20th US President, but also Elliott Ness who brought down crime boss Al Capone and America's first billionaire John Davison Rockefeller.

This cemetery takes some getting too, 130th street on the east side, but well worth the drive. Famous burials include Alan Freed (hippest monument--a juke box!), JD Roosevelt, Pres. Garfield after his assassination, Eliot Ness.

Family members are buried here so I return frequently and am always inspired by the beauty. The landscaping is marvelous and it is always well-maintained. The monuments are special, and there are landmarks here worth visiting as a tourist. Great spot on the side of the hill.

Purchased two ninches for my mother and step father went to check on encryption on the stones also purchase the ninch above my mother for myself

I have always wanted to see where John D. Rockefeller and Elliot Ness were burried. You could easily spend 2 to 3 hours here if you are the curious type.

This is a gorgeous cemetery with rolling hills, plenty of scenery, and amazing headstones and monuments. I stopped to see a few of the notable burials and the place was packed with walkers and people checking it out. Great way to spend a day! Maps are available at the office so you know where the highlighted graves are.

Just a gorgeous place to visit. We spent about four hours there. I grew up in Cleveland but didn't know about it until now. Also didn't know a president was buried in Cleveland!
Largest Tiffany glass collection anywhere. Many famous (and gorgeous) graves.
Beautiful views of the city.
GO!
But, it was! Great history and beautiful monuments. My favorites were Elliott Ness, Alan Freed and President Garfield. Plus it was beautiful and quiet. It was a really nice, but quirky, way to spend an afternoon!
