An excellent museum with an extensive collection and get exhibits. There is also a wonderful sculpture garden on the grounds.

When I was here, there was one temporary exhibition and three exhibitions based on the museum's existing collection, and it took me a little over an hour to go through everything. All the exhibitions were very diverse and interesting, so I didn't feel like I was looking at similar things the whole time. Museum staff are all very helpful and friendly.

Friendly staff and ultra clean museum makes me return regularly.
The outdoor bronze figures and water features create a reflective atmosphere.
You can get some serious mindful meditation done in these gardens.

An outstanding museum. The "Birds in Art" exhibits are always fun and fantastic.

This small, unique museum features art that specializes in pictures of birds and flowers. The quality of the pieces shown was outstanding! There is a lovely outdoor sculpture garden and a children's art space for hands-on activity.

For years I have wanted to go to this museum to view the pieces of art that were created by some of the best wildlife artists in the world. I was impressed with the many paintings, wood carvings, bronzes and other exhibits at the museum. Each year the displays change. The staff was friendly and talked about the many artists that visit and present their art to museum for display. The visit to garden area was special as their many bronzes of different wildlife. I was impressed with a horse that featured a pieces of driftwood to construct the horse and then to bronze.

As I had attended another event I asked people visiting and locals had they ever been to the Woodson Museum many said no. Some I talked to later did go and enjoyed it.

My several hours could have taken much of day and if I have a chance I will return.

It was a joy to experience the display of "recycled" items made into breath-taking art. Fun for all ages in our group. Fascinating, inspiring, uplifting.

We stopped Wausau on our way to Bayfield and lucked into finding this lovely museum on a pleasant summer afternoon. There was a special exhibit on quilts as well as a series of paintings by NC, Andrew and Jamie Wyeth. The focus of the museum is birds and their collection is stunning. There is a small but beautiful sculpture garden and there was a yoga class in progress. Highly recommend this place

The first Saturday after Labor Day the Woodson Art Museum has a show of bird art - pictures and sculptures from artists around the world. The quality and diversity of the works were amazing. On opening day, many of the artists were there (from all over the world) and happy to talk with visitors. One artist said there is nothing like this anywhere in the world! Each work had a short description from the artist about the work - why they chose the particular subject, the materials, and/or challenges in making it which was personal and engaging. It is free and open through November.

Highly recommend this special museum. They have a permanent Birds in Art exhibit that is awesome, and seasonal changes of shows with a wide variety of subjects and interests. It is a great way to enjoy a morning or an afternoon anytime. The outdoor gardens are especially beautiful on a lovely day.

We never would have expected to find a world class museum in Wausau Wisconsin. Birds in Art is an outstanding exhibit. The museum’s collection is also exceptional. We highly recommend it to any bird-lover and every art-lover!

Their exhibit of birds in art is epic. Not just one medium but many. Large, small, humorous, serious hard to imagine the creative vehicles of expression. If you are going to be in the area this is a must see. Oh, and did I say it's free?

By Ann G |

I have visited the museum in the past for different exhibits, especially the always popular birds in art. Now, I am visiting with a toddler for some of the programs designed just for them. Toddler Tuesday is once a month, and the art activities have a theme. It is generally based on something at the museum. Have you ever thought of painting a hedgehog with a bottle brush for the bristle effect? Or a fish by rolling golf balls through paint to get the scales? How about using a real flower as your paintbrush to add texture? These are all things my toddler has done there. Everything is prepped for them to work on. Add in a little snack, and some story time, and it's a great visit! What a great program this is, and they have programs for other ages, also.

We love birds, we love birds in art. The Woodson was perfect for us. We loved the beautiful grounds, stunning building and magnificent displays. The Birds In Art exhibit took our breath away, several times. Several of the artists were known to us, many others are now on our radar.
We hope to return, again and again.
I almost forgot to mention, it's free!!!

This museum is amazing! It is smaller compared to museums in metropolitan areas but it is worth the stop! The staff is very helpful and informative. There is a garden outside of the museum that you can walk around afer your done inside. I would recommend this museum to everyone and the best part is that it is free admission!

This was a fabulous little gem in the middle of a residential neighborhood. We visited the museum because of the M C Escher exhibition, and were so thrilled to see so many other wonderful artists, too. Reubens Peale, J J Audubon, Tiffany to name only a few. There was a display of glass art pieces that was unbelievably beautiful. The sculpture garden was gorgeous even though the day was chilly and it's too early in the season to get the true effect of the sculpture with the flowers. There is an interactive art studio on the lower level and we had a lot of fun with tessellations and perspective.

By TommyBear |

This is heresy, I know, but: I'm not a huge fan of bird art - I mean, I can appreciate it but wouldn't travel 2 hours to see it. Their special traveling exhibitions however are OUTSTANDING and well worth the trip. Over the years I've seen exhibits of Picasso Ceramics, Trompe L'oeil, The Art of Seating: Two Hundred Years of American Design - and next week I'll go see Tiffany Glass: Painting with Color and Light.

I especially love visiting in the summer when I can enjoy their beautiful sculpture garden.

This is definitely worth a stop for anyone traveling on US-29 or I-51. And if you're a bird enthusiast, well - the stop will be TWICE as wonderful!

Wonderful exibits, I have been there several times for a couple of the "touring shows". I always found the museum to be wonderful and entertaining.

We went to see the Birds in Art Exhibit. What a wonderful display of art this year. This is my favorite exhibit. The Sculpture Garden was updated. My favorite was the Sandhill Cranes. They made me smile and laugh. They looked happy.

Leigh Yawkey Woods on Museum is a "must see" while in Wausau. Families can go. There is an area for young artists to be creative. Exhibits change during the year. Artist's from all over the world are showcased.

Went to an quilting retreat and also enjoyed the speaker who presented quilts she had done and tips.

Great place for kids. Educational and interactive. Kids love it all. Outside statues are great and you can pose with them. Painting etc are always rigorous.

Free, great activities for kids of all ages in the basement. The sculpture garden and the rooftop garden are beautiful.

By 2paradise |

The visit to this museum took more of our time than we expected as there are outdoor sculptures and then the Bird Exhibit inside. Both had us enjoying every piece of artwork and creation. We went to this museum with our teen daughter and college daughter. There was an elementary school tour going through while we were here and we were impressed with the way they had the children's attention.

By Alecia S |

This is a wonderful museum and has many great exhibits. The children's section is always a hit with my niece and nephew. Going in the warmer months you can also enjoy the lovely gardens.

By Faith2015 |

Absolutely loved the Escher exhibit as well as the artist featured in the lower level. Always love spending time there.

By William S |

Having some of the works of Victor Vasarely here in Wausau is remarkable. The Op Art Master's serigraphs can only be experienced and explored at a museum. This is a great opportunity for the Wausau community to experience the kinetic art of 124 pieces of art work.

Every year, for the past twenty-some, we've made the pilgrimage to the Bird Art Show at Leigh Yawkey Woodson, and it just keeps getting better and better. The museum is worth a visit just for the architecture and surrounding gardens, but what happens here every fall is worth a visit. Artists from all over the world are represented in various mediums that showcase birds in art. You can enjoy bronzes, oils, acrylics, watercolor, woodcarving, scratchboard, serigraphs, batiks, graphite and pencil, all displayed in a professionally-done museum setting. Some years we've been lucky enough to attend the opening reception and meet several of the talented artists who enter their work. But, if you can't make the opening weekend, the show continues through to the middle of November each year, so there's plenty of time to schedule a trip to Wausau. Later in the fall, you can also view the show that goes on outside the museum...a rich pallette of fall colors. The hardwoods throughout the city and on surrounding Rib Mountain turn vibrant red, orange and yellows...beautiful!

By Judy M |

If you're a bird lover or if you enjoy excellent art work, you'll be glad you visited this gem of a museum. The grounds and gardens are lovely with bird sculptures to admire. Every year from September through November they host an exhibition of the very best contemporary two and three-dimensional interpretations of birds entitled Birds in Art. We've been to this exhibition twice now and will be back again whenever we can. We suspect all the exhibitions featured at the museum would be well worth a visit.

By Jerry B |

We often go there for the traveling displays. This time it was the origami display. Small but well done. Will look forward to the next change.

By Ed S |

We found out about the museum during a weekend stay in Wausau, WI. The museum is a gem. The grounds and sculpture garden were beautiful. The weekend we visited, they had a special exhibit of bird paintings. These were not the usual bird stamp type paintings. They had a variety of painting styles and most were truly beautiful works of art. We didn’t have a lot of time to explore the entire museum but we will go back anytime we’re in the area.

By Janet R |

Loved walking through the gardens with all the beautiful sculptures. The inside of the museum was equally enjoyable with all the bird paintings and more sculptures.

By CookieCanoeski |

We drive to Wausau to see Birds in Art every year and we love this museum, which keeps getting better all the time. This year we came early for the opening weekend, to hear Master Artist Cindy House speak, mingled with the large crowd which included many artists whose works were in the galleries, plus several who demonstrated and discussed their works. Birds In Art 2018 is an amazing exhibition. The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum (LYWAM) puts tons of effort into this world class annual event. The Artrageous opening weekend is over but the show goes into November so go yourself if you can.
We came back on Sunday afternoon when the LYWAM was not crowded to take some more time to view the BIA, plus two other exhibitions we had skipped on Saturday. One huge room of bird 'portraits' from their permanent collection (which must be amazing!) and several dozen serigraphs by Anne Senechal Faust, who we also love.
The LYWAM is always free! They close at 4 on weekdays, 5 on weekends. I didn't mention the lovely sculpture garden on the grounds. The museum is located in a residential neighborhood on the east side of town. At present there's not much road construction so getting in and out of Wausau is fairly easy these days. Pretty soon the colors will be changing and there's still a lot of trees in that part of the state. That would make for a beautiful drive and enhance your experience; on your way home you might see the landscapes differently. But even if you go when its cold gray and the leaves have blown, treat yourself and prepare to be charmed. This place is a gem.

By Annette T |

The Birds and Art exhibit was wonderful! This is always a fabulous exhibit and well worth a stop. Enjoyed it tremendously and drove three hours to get here.

By Linda H |

If you want an amazing experience, visit this jewel of a museum in Wausau, Wisconsin...and then take a look at all they offer! Wow! It's a great place for the whole family - you and the kids will love it.

By HTCWI |

Fantastic exhibit focusing on Susie Barstow & her circle of artists! Beautiful art giving various perspectives on our relationship to land & landscape. Also highly recommend “Beyond Measure: the art of scale” with rooms focusing on “think big” and “think small” - definitely worth checking out!

By Charles S |

This is another small museum, but is able to acquire many geat exhibits. Well worth going to .

By walmarttravel |

Art museum is fun to go too. Free pay is awesome. Different stuff you don't know what to expect. Kids get their own room for old art. I wish I could go again. Every thing is free except the meal.

By Jlars2006 |

This museum is very family friendly. Some of the outdoor sculptures were designed to allow children to climb on them. They also have an indoor children's area. In my opinion the best part of the museum is the programs for the children. We try to attend these programs with my toddler in the summer. It is a lovely introduction to art that is age appropriate. My only complaint is that I work during the school year so we are unable to attend these programs then.

Much to see all year around as exhibits change - French posters coming up - Will go again - Clean, documents, organized

We stopped on our drive home because we wanted to stretch our legs. We are glad this was the place we picked! When we pulled up and saw the sculptures in the garden we were pleasantly surprised. It was relaxing and inspiring to walk along the path and see the hippo and the cougars among other things. When we walked inside we found out that the main gallery was closed. We walked through one of the exhibits and enjoyed seeing the paintings of different types of birds and nature. Then we headed downstairs and came upon the children's area. We didn't have our kids but we had fun dressing up like Andy Warhol and climbing into the Campbell's Soup can. Next time we will bring them. The staff is friendly! We found ourselves in a conversation for quite awhile with one of the staff members who had fascinating stories. He was the icing on the cake. The pop art exhibit was wonderful. Seeing Andy Warhol's "Mao" was another highlight. We ran out of time though and plan to return shortly to see the bird exhibit and bring our kids.

I made a pilgrimage back to Wausau, where I lived from ages 1 to 9. I'm 60 now, so it has been awhile. I "happened" to go to the museum during the bird exhibit. It was breathtaking! I want to take family back to see it. My mom and sister were planning a trip with me, but Covid-19 took my mom for a ride. She survived, but I don't know whether we'll get back to Wausau together. I recommend this museum. I can't wait to go back!

By William S |

By far one of the best juried exhibits at the Museum. Thank you to all of the artists, staff and Woodson family for your efforts. Please allow adequate time in your schedule to enjoy your tour.

By George H |

This is a MUST stop for visitors to Wausau. The adjoining sculpture park is well done. The Art Museum always seems to have outstanding shows. The Bird art exhibit in the fall brings artists from around the world to participate.

By Gina M |

We were on our way to upper Wisconsin and we needed to take a break from the car ride. I read about this on tripadvisor, so we got off the interstate and visited the Art Museum. It was very entertaining! First, we walked through the outside garden which had a few different (and interesting) sculptures. Then, we went in and only really had time for the Night Garden exhibit. It was amazing! The photographs were amazing and very different. We all really enjoyed ourselves! I'd definitely recommend it!

By William S |

LYWAM has once again shown that art and its many mediums can be fun and amazing. Federicho Uribe's site specific exhibition encompasses many unusual items creating (building) animals, landscapes and humans. This is a must see exhibit while at the Museum until August 26, 2018. Save yourself a trip to t he Adelson Museum in Boston. Also enjoy Ann Faust's serigraphs in the south exhibit hall.

By HTCWI |

An absolute must for this summer is the current exhibit: Celebrating Summer Plein-Air Painters of America! These paintings are all breathtaking. Absolutely gorgeous outdoor paintings capturing natural light in every way possible! The exhibit runs through August 25, 2013 and is something everyone who enjoys the outdoors needs to see. Woodson Art Museum is always free and if you are looking for a nice cool stop on a hot summer day - this is the place to go. My favorite artists in the exhibit: Joseph McGurl & Brian Stewart - incredible! We also checked out the permanent exhibit: Owen J. Gromme - An Enduring Legacy while we were there and it was amazing as well. Detailed life like paintings primarily of Wisconsin wildlife and nature - check it out! Thank you Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum for the opportunity to see these amazing artists work!

By Michele K |

This museum is a must see! The collection starts with the statues and structures on the outside of the building. A stroll through the gardens is a must! Many opportunities for photos. When you get inside their collection is large and has a wide variety of mediums and interest. In the bird area, some of the pieces are so well done you think you are looking through the window at the real thing. It is amazing to see such a large collection in a place like Wausau. Great Job, Wausau!!

I recently met a friend in Wausau for a weekend trip.
We had select things to do and one of our choices was to visit
Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. At didn't expect much for such a small area, but was I in for a surprise. I was breath taken at the interior of this building. Simply gorgeous, very open and welcoming. It seems newly renovated thou I can't be sure. The displays where well laid out and each room flowed nicely to the next. Wonderful exhibits! One of the best features was the child friendly play museum in the lower level. Thou my son wasn't with me I have made plans to return with him to visit again. And i can't forget the most wonderful part.... no admission cost. I was astounded to learn when we arrived that there was no entry fee. I have been to many museums in my travels but never to such a beautiful, well put together, clean & friendly place without emptying my pocket book. They evidently also have an exterior park, with statues along walkways, though in the mid of winter, we were not able to partake in that feature. Still beautiful none the less.

If you go to Wausau and do not take your family to visit this museum, you would be missing a most pleasant area attraction.

By VAtraveller_11 |

We went to an exhibit here about two years ago and were surprised at the high quality of the place. It is located in an old lumber family's mansion.

Great collection of art relating to birds. The annual Birds in Art exhibit is top notch. This is a hidden gem in north central Wisconsin.

A little background info; I did not visit the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum until a college art course I was in took a field trip here. I would not have considered coming here otherwise, as when I hear "art museum", I generally just envision old paintings and pictures. This course was a couple months ago, and it changed my perception of this Museum and other art museums.

At the time, there was an amazing set of origami throughout the Museum. I understand some of their offerings rotate out every few months, whereas some like their Birds In Art exhibit remain stable. I was intrigued enough on the two hour field trip that I brought my family here a few weeks later to see everything. The amount of content available to view is staggering considering that it's free to visit. Their continual updating of the exhibits is appreciated, and we will likely visit again over the summer. Donation boxes are available throughout, and the staff we talked to was friendly and willing to help us as needed.

Finding the location is probably the hardest part, as it's tucked away up on the east side hill on the way out of town toward highway Z/Franklin St., and the main parking lot is a small walk from the main entrance. Thankfully, parking is free and abundant, as there's an overflow lot just across the street.

If you're in the area for any reason and want an interesting way to spend an hour or two, check out the Museum. I do appreciate abstract and dark art, but figured everything here would be more "user-friendly" or "mainstream", so-to-speak. However, even the Birds in Art exhibit has a lot of really unique pieces that caught my eye. A great, low-cost way to spend some time whether alone, as a couple, or with family.

By cf m |

For a small city this is an outstanding museum. We have been in some big city museums and this will rank with them on quality, but not size. It is easy however to spend a morning or afternoon here.

By CheeseheadsII |

I wished it hadn't been all birds but it was nice. We went with another couple after going on e chair lift at Granite Peak to see the fall colors. Lots of very interesting pieces.

By ForSure53 |

Inside art displays. Special features. Kids hands on activities. BEAUTIFUL gardens with a 'hidden' treasure hunt. This is the BEST museum I have attended. Small enough to not wear you out, and give you the opportunity to see 'everything', yet has some highly valued works of art displayed for your enjoyment. Go, and Go Often! All for free!

By NorthStar771279 |

Beautiful museum specializing in bird art and paintings. International artists. Well worth a quick stop while in Wausau. Pretty grounds too.

By Doni57 |

We love this museum! It has something for everyone. Kid friendly and really neat stuff outside too. Changes often so you rarely see the same things twice.

By Robert L |

This place is a must stop if you are in the Wausau area, they have so many big name works and for a medium size city such as Wausau it is a real treat

By Mark E |

I recently spent a couple of hours at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau on a Saturday afternoon. I was in the Wausau area for a day en route to Michigan's U.P. on my summer vacation. I decided to check out this free art museum, and it was a great way to spend some time! There are many interesting pieces of art to look at both inside and outside this beautiful facility. This is a very well maintained building, and everything was in very good condition here. There are a variety of rooms and sections to peruse, and I enjoyed the exhibits on artwork featuring birds on this visit. There are even multiple levels with exhibits, so be sure to check out all the floors. In particular, I enjoyed the room with the ABC's where an artist depicted each letter of the alphabet with some kind of living thing to represent the letter. I found that I completely missed a section of this museum during my last visit here 5 years ago or so, so definitely make sure to see everything! It was not overly busy when I was here either, so I had an enjoyable time looking at all the art in peace! I would recommend this art museum, and it is a great way to spend part of your day in Wausau!

By Nadyaveliz |

I went in a cold and snowy day, the building is so pretty, from outside looks like a beautiful Tudor house with stone façade. Although it's a small museum it was interesting. They offer an iPhone with earphones for specific tour spots. Well worth it to complete your experience. There's neither a fee for the entrance nor the iPhone. All the people working at the museum was very attentive.

By Don V |

The museum has quality art exhibits featuring birds as well as animals and other topics. We are in Wausau annually and this is the one thing we do not miss each time we are in the area. It's definitely a pleasure.

By Sue S |

Self Guided tour was very enjoyable. We couldn't believe all the chairs from different time periods. You can spend a lot of time or a short amount. You can give a donation which we always do but that's the nice part you decide how much you want to donate. We really enjoy the Sculpture Park. Every time we go there is something new added. Its always a delight to walk through to see what they have added.
Friendly staff and very clean.

By Kristine K |

A hidden gem. The grounds, the building, the staff - all wonderful. Worth a visit, even if just to walk the grounds and see the sculptures. Visited the glass exhibit and went back when Corning Glass Museum did their week visit of glass blowing and was so glad I went both times. Have walked the grounds several times. Do go. Exhibits change so find one you would like to see - or go see all the exhibits!

By Robby T |

The art in this museum was splendid. Every piece of art had amazing detail and lots of texture. It definitely was a great place to go. The outdoor sculptures were very detailed and great, although there is a statue of a dog with his genitals in plain sight. That was a little weird. Overall, great place.

By jgmgWisconsin |

Leigh Yawkey is a top notch art museum and one of the best in the U.S. WOW and it is in Central Wisconsin!! Their exhibits this January/February 2018 are exceptional. While you may not be into quilting or woodworking, you will be amazed at the exhibits currently there. Of course the museum also has their own art acquired over the years which is also spectacular. If you can make it before end of February you will very much enjoy the current exhibits which are fantastic. Enjoy!! We certainly did and spent more time than others looking it all over. Beautiful artistry.

By chesmorek76 |

They have s beautiful outside park with sculptures. They staff indoors is very informative and helpful. A nice place for picnicking but not for small children.

By Cindy G |

Leigh Yawkey Art Museum is probably one of the best art museums in the Midwest, and could be up there for the U.S.A. Whenever we have visited, the staff have been very accommodating and are able to answer any questions one may have. Their displays are beautifully displayed, their is much room for guests to roam around in while looking at the art. There is also a wonderful children's area. They also have many family oriented events throughout the year. We usually spend 2 hours there, but length of visit depends on the feature display. Their outside grounds are fantastic and stunningly beautiful! This is a favorite place for our family to visit and it's free!

By Jerrycur1s |

great place inside and out! the garden is very nice and well maintained. exhibits change every 3 months so always something new!

By Amber T |

I have been to this art museum a few times now and each time is always a little better than the last. My family and I have walked around the outside garden to view all of the sculptures and have enjoyed the variations and details we see within them.

Inside, there is enough variety with the exhibits that we can always find something to catch our eye, be it a color scheme within a painting, the style and shape of an image, or just a general topic or theme.

There is a kids' area as well which includes a couple of easels for children to draw, a chalk board area, and some other crafty little items for youngsters partake in if they choose. My son always enjoys drawing at the easel.

We look forward to seeing their newer exhibits as they become available.

By jasoczka |

This museum offers interesting exhibits which change quarterly. There is a children’s hands on section as well. The beautiful sculptures on the grounds are a bonus to an overall delightful experience. Museum is free though free will offerings are appreciated.

By alohagal1949 |

To be honest, I never saw myself as a person that would walk into an art museum let alone, become one of its biggest cheerleaders. The exhibits change every few months and I haven't seen one yet that I didn't enjoy. Even if you know nothing about the subject matter, (i.e. guitars) by the time you're through the exhibit, you're so glad you went and feel so appreciative you got to see it. The building itself and the gardens around it are so interesting and family friendly. Most exhibits can be seen in under an hour. There is no admission charge so everyone can enjoy this little gem.

By James C |

WOW!!!! This year I attended the 2018 Birds In Art exhibition. To be honest I was a participating artist. Having said that, this museum is outstanding in what it does beyond BIA. Other art galleries and museums could learn so much from this venue. They want art to be accessible to all, not just the elite. The staff is incredible. How's this, an art gallery which lets eye seeing dogs be trained inside the gallery, and tactile exhibitions so that those with limited sight are allowed to experience art. Nobody does it like The Woodson. Free admission, free parking, national museum and library award winner, the list goes on and on. If you're lucky enough to be anywhere near Wausau, stop in. It's a must. Great, friendly educational staff too. You will always feel welcome there no matter what your understanding of art is. Even wifi apps so you can hear the artists explain their work in their own words. This IS the place!! Do yourself a favour.

By Jerry B |

We go to see the changing exhibits now and again. This time it was the "chair exhibit". Was a quick in and out. One could spent more time there and see all of the exhibits if they wanted. It is a friendly and clean environment with staff on hand to help or answer questions. There is no admission fee but donations are accepted.

By Tina D |

Was at the Museum July 15 and saw artwork by Frederico Uribe which is very fun and amazing made with lots of pencils, soles of shoes, tops of shoes, rubber tires, helmets, etc. all into beautiful fun animals. This exhibit will be at the museum until August 26th. I would highly recommend seeing this beautiful, unbelievable talent from this artist. The museum itself is very very nice with an outside garden which small but beautiful. They also have an exhibit called Birds in Art.
There's no cost to get into the museum they do like a donation at the door when you're leaving, if you are able to afford it.

By David E |

I've visited smaller city museums all over the U.S., and this one is the best I've seen. Wausau is in the approximate middle of Wisconsin in an area famous for woods and cheese. But don't underestimate this first-class art museum - it's a dandy.

When we were there they were celebrating their 40th annual exhibition of Birds In Art. I was amazed at the scope of the art on exhibit - some truly outstanding pieces - as well as a smaller exhibit on Extinct and Endangered Birds of N. America. The Birds in Art exhibit runs through November, 2015 but the smaller Extinct and Endangered exhibit ends in July.

Also on display during our visit was a traveling exhibit from the National Guitar Museum. This also was first-class, with every guitar from ancient to a copy of Eddie Van Halen's heavily modified version. Especially interesting for young people, but even my non-guitarist spouse found it educational.

There is an outdoor large sculpture garden, featuring works by some of America's top artists, including a spectacular Trumpeter Swan piece by Tony Angell and one of Deborah Butterfield's famous horse-out-of-driftwood sculptures.

There is no entrance fee but I highly recommend making at least a $5 donation at the door when you leave. It is well worth it!

The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum is housed in a pretty building in the middle of a nice residential neighborhood. Parking is plentiful. The man who greeted us at the front door was chatty and friendly. It was exciting to see so many paintings by people still living - a rarity at any museum. I’m impressed and delighted that they are able to keep the museum free for visitors.

By rwbsangel |

i Love the exhibits the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Muesum displays! I went to see the quilt show and was sooooo amazed at the beautiful exhibits. They paired the quilt exhibits with carved wood exhibits which gave a wonderful variety of handmade craftsmanship. Simply beautiful. The childrens area also had a place for the children to make their own quilts with pieces made from paper. I thoroughly enjoy this place.

By Jeff K |

Famous among certain art afficinados mainly for their annual juried 'Birds in Art' show every fall this beautiful museum in a quiet part of Wausau has some other stellar attractions. Their sculpture garden (in a wooded area) is very good with some delightful sculptures including 2 bears playing/wrestling. There are permanent exhibitions and long term exhibitions, e.g. a focus on an artist such as Owen Gromme.

They also host interesting travelling exhibitions; currently it is a Tiffany Glass exhibit. My wife & I went and it turned out to be very fascinating.

Adjacent to the area where they have the current exhibit there is a very nicely done children's area where kids can do hands on projects related to the current exhibit.

Really nice museum in a modern facility. Large collection of paintings. They have an interesting outdoor sculpture garden, too.

We were in Wausau for a family event and had some time to fill on a lovely afternoon, so we headed for this museum. So glad we did! The grounds are stunning, with sculptures and landscaping. The museum itself is small, and all the art is bird-themed. This sounds like it would be monotonous, but far from it! The permanent collection is very good, and we were lucky to visit during the annual "Birds in Art" exhibition, which was wonderful. We were so impressed with the breadth and depth of the exhibition and the museum's permanent collection. There is no admission fee, but we left a donation.

By cathy s |

First a word about the museum. This is a very kid friendly place as they have classrooms and a docent who can explain things to them and even draw a picture. One room was a tactile exhibit where you were allowed, even encouraged to touch the exhibits. We are an older couple and found enough to entertain us and even enjoy a comfy padded bench to rest on before heading outside to the Sculpture Garden.
The Sculpture Garden is well shaded and if you get one of the handouts, identifies all the pieces, showing you locations, too. There were six items that they showed you what they look like and encouraged you to find them and place them on the map. I can see kids going crazy over who could find the sculpture first. Plenty of benches to sit on outside and enjoy nature.

We finally made the 2-1/2 hr drive here and wished we'd done it earlier. Wonderful National Geographic photo display, and birds exhibition-wonderful!

By ScoutMidwest |

The exhibitions rotate several times of year and they are very creative. Be sure to see the collection of art centering on birds! Come in the Spring Summer or Fall and enjoy the lovely gardens.

By Ferngirl2 |

Best bird paintings and sculpture in US! Wonderful exhibits in historic house. The Origami traveling exhibit was very interesting as well.

By Andshedid |

I visit Wausau frequently and am always impressed and amazed that a town of this size has what is really a world-class art museum - especially if you love birds. The outdoor gardens are as impressive as the inside, too. It's free and just a lovely time.

By 303janez |

My 8 year old granddaughter and I go to the museum every time they change. She loves it. We enjoy our time together. We love the children’s section. We put the puzzles together. I always take pictures, this time she started taking pictures. We love the museum very much.

By joshfrederickson11 |

If you are in Wausau, check this place out. Not only is it free (how can you go wrong), but they change out the exhibits. I go here once a year when in town skiing with my wife. We absolutely love it!

By Woodshopgirl14 |

They always have something cool to go see and the outside sculpture park is my favorite. The kid's playroom always has something fun too. The last time I was there they had the Walter Wick exhibit and it was exceptional!

By lhp5536 |

This is a great place to visit, art for all, changing exhibits, programs for kids, sculpture in the gardens, beautiful landscaping. One of the best reasons to come to Wausau.

By Great2Greatest |

Nice museum, has something for all ages. Nice outdoor sculpture park & free so you can go often. We were there in the winter so didn't walk through entire sculpture park. Nice hands on section for adults and children.

By Marguerite D |

The Woodson Art Museum is a wonderful small museum. If you can, catch their flagship juried fall exhibit, "Birds in Art", which features artists from all over the world. It runs from early September through November, with different art works each year. During the rest of the year there are a variety of traveling exhibits there for 8 weeks at a time.

The sculpture garden is wonderful, with a wide variety of sculptures and nice gardens. And the indoor "Art Park" for children is a great playground/learning adventure for the small ones.

It's a true gem.

By Billie O |

A gem on Wausau's east side, the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum is always free and always a great day out.

Suitable for kids with a great sculpture garden and many interactive modules in the kids' basement activity center.

While Birds in Art is a celebrated mainstay, the regular rotation of new exhibits and community events makes this museum is an absolute delight year round.

By JohnGrupe |

Leigh Yawkey not only has a great collection of birds in art but also sponsors many wonderful traveling exhibits. Check out their web site to see what is showing.

By Wausautraveler24 |

Always free, always interesting, very worth your time. The new Owen Gromme exhibit is marvelous. The sculpture garden is a delightful stroll in any weather.

By Quack Pack |

Very interesting and hidden Gem in the Wausau area. Worth checking out. Make sure to call ahead for hours as those change seasonally.

By Laura B |

This place is a true gem. We always enjoy our visits to this museum. The exhibits are outstanding, without fail. They offer activities for children which are great. We often go on Sundays just to walk the grounds and enjoy the serenity.

By yoink02 |

This is a great place. There is an incentives at the end for the kids. I like that they have the kids activity area at the end, otherwise we end up spending almost the whole time there. And The whole thing is very well put tighter! The gallery is beautifully laid out, It is an amazing space (I didn't know existed until last week) and even the kids area changes with the exposition, so there is something new for the little ones!

The exhibit too was wonderful.

By Michael F |

This is a "Best of" Wisconsin and definitely a "Don't Miss" for Wausau. It is a small museum, but there are many things to look at. They host traveling exhibits which have brought some very unique things to Wausau. Their own unique traveling exhibit is the "Birds in Art" exhibit which is viewable each year beginning the weekend after Labor Day through approximately Thanksgiving. This is a juried exhibit and artists from around the world submit artwork. This museum at the gateway to the north woods shows mostly artwork of nature. This is a treasure in Central Wisconsin!

By Dancer54401 |

Visiting this museum is always fun because they have great rotating exhibits and great art. The grounds are also kept very clean.

By remmen |

I cannot say enough about this museum. We were actually "killing" time, while waiting for our grandson's football game to begin that evening, so looked up what to do in Wausau on trip advisor. This museum came up as a top attraction. The day was a bit drizzly, but the trees in the area were magnificant, We thought it was a good day to explore, and were so happy we stopped here.
The sculpture garden at the entrance of this lovely old mansion, was incredible. When we entered the museum, we were told there was no admission fee (though, we left a donation when we left) and the featured exhibit was BIRDS IN ART. I was moved to tears with the beauty of this exhibit. We found out that it is an annual exhibit that is featured several months out of the year, and then changes annually. I cannot recommend this hidden treasure enough. You will not be disappointed!

By Barb Z |

A must see in this area. We came up for the fall colors at Rob Mountain and also to go to the museum. We loved the sculpture garden on this beautiful fall day and the Bird exhibit did not disappoint! We were here two years ago and this time brought our friends. What extraordinary bird art by the artists! We all see things so differently. Amazingly professional work by all. The museum itself is well taken care of and very clean. The staff and docents were very helpful and proud of their museum. We hope to visit every fall!

By caroldebbout |

This museum is unique in that it is strictly "Birds in Art". Don't let this deter you! There is ample parking, and a lovely garden area to walk thru that you shouldn't miss. The actual museum space is spacious and well lit, and very easy to follow thru all the exhibits. We were fascinated, and just loved our visit there! The children's area is a fun place with lots for the kids to do. The fact the admission is free is amazing, but don't let that lead you to believe that what's there is not worth a look ...IT IS! A A lovely morning we had visiting the Woodson, and you will too!

By Charlene A |

All art works are about the woods and animals. The art work inside has some of the most beautiful and marvelously executed pastels and ink drawings I have ever seen. Outside is a sculpture garden that is astounding. Peaceful place. Would be nice place to sit and read or have a wedding. Should see

By MooseGoose2022 |

The Birds in Art exhibit was fantastic - huge variety of works and media. There was also an interesting exhibit on stormy kromers. I'm looking forward to next year's Birds in Art!

By imtheglobetrotter |

What a neat museum with high-quality art. There is a lower-level section for kids to try out the art techniques the rest of the museum is featuring. There is a terrific outdoor sculpture garden with amazing statues, sculptures and other nifty things to look at (even in winter)!

Museum staff is knowledgeable and proud of this place. They said the collections change several times a year and there are public events as well.

By Ben H |

Don't miss the opportunity to visit the LYW Art Museum when you are in central Wisconsin! I would encourage you to even go out of your way to make it happen. In particular, you will want to take in the Birds in Art exhibition which opens each September, bringing artists together from around the world to this premier juried exhibit solely devoted to birds. Opportunities for all ages and abilities to engage in art experiences happen on a regular basis throughout the year.

By ticketme |

Before you walk in the door you are treated to a Secret Garden of realistic and fanciful sculptures. Inside the current exhibition was galleries full of wonderful drawings, paintings, and sculptures of mostly birds. Downstairs there are more exhibitions plus rooms for children to learn about art hands-on. It is a manageable size for young children or those with challenges. The art was was mostly realistic. The docent who greeted us was a gracious lady who explained where everything was and made us feel like honored guests. We will absolutely visit again every time we are in town as we smiled the whole time we were there.

By tammykevin |

Free museum on Wausau's east side has both permanent and seasonal/special exhibits. We did origami last fall and enjoyed both the outdoor sculpture garden and the indoor Owen Gromme permanent exhibit. Highlight of the year is Birds in Art which runs each fall. Smaller museum can be enjoyed in a few hours.

By Stephen M |

We went to this fine museum to see a glass work show. The exhibit was spectacular! The museum itself is a handsome structure with very nice grounds. The space throughout the building is comfortable and spacious. Designed well for art displays. Another reason why Wausau is one of our favorite cities in Wisconsin. I love visiting this town; and a stop at the art museum is always a must check out whenever we are in Wausau.

By 554bill1975 |

I would highly recommend a visit to Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum. Great wildlife art and a wonderful facility overall.

By Jin G |

This museum was wonderful for a small town art museum. I loved all the exhibits, and it was very peaceful to wander around on my own. There were just a few other visitors when I went during the winter, so I had the place to myself to explore. It would make a great stop on a road trip since it takes much less time to see than a larger museum. The staff was great, really down-to earth and caring.

By Bill D |

We were there to see the "Birds in Art" exhibit. I was blown away that a museum of this size had such a first class exhibit. The curators did a great job! Highly recommend it. Don't miss the outside garden sculpture as well. Lots of fun.

By DrDJJ |

This museum is free. While it always has exhibits of birds that are interesting, it also has traveling exhibits with art.from Andy Warhol to many others. The kids part of the museum also changes, which makes this museum fun to visit several times a year! Don't miss this gem of Wausau.

By ekpresley |

We try to visit whenever there is a new exhibit. I feel a point is made to make a lot of diversity in their exhibits, to interest many people with different aspects of art. It is free and the volunteers at the front desk are always welcoming and willing to help. Lots of parking, can stroll through the grounds, places to hang your coats, great bathrooms.

By SenCrow |

The people that settled in Central Wisconsin and launched industries that thrive yet today were remarkable for their foresight in protecting the environment and establishing a culture and legacy that thrives yet today.

This museum is professionally designed and profoundly exacting in its retelling of history. As with the best museums, a visitor can easily find themselves transported to another time.

By RadiantPath |

Set in a quiet Midwestern neighborhood, visiting this free museum was a highlight of our Fall Road Trip. Lovely grounds with substantial outdoor sculpture surround the museum itself home to a permanent exhibit and the annual Birds in Art show. Possible to spend several hours here wandering from room to room; docents knowledgeable and friendly.

By MES42812 |

Visited the museum and enjoyed every aspect of it. All the paintings, the sculptures, the pottery and glassware as well as the featured display artist; inside and the outer grounds. I do art myself, and was inspired. The only downfall was that I wanted to share a particular group of paintings with my husband that I had seen on a previous visit and it was closed.

By Rita W |

The designs of the quilt art were amazing. Many different textures and items used. Many hours must have been put into each piece.

By dcrabill |

The artwork and galleries they run throughout the year are always phenomenal. There is no cost to get in other than making a donation which I am always happy to provide. This museum is one of the gems of Wausau.

By Ann C |

I took my friend to the local attractions for her birthday since she isn't originally from the area. We went when they have the I Spy display. We rather enjoyed looking at all of the pieces and finding certain objects in some along the way. It brings back some nostalgia from yesteryears and toured the sculpture gardens afterwards since it was a gorgeous day. Also is fun to drive around the area of the museum since it does house many of the historical houses in Wausau as well. Definitely is fun to check out when it brings you back to your childhood.

By HTCWI |

My mom and I stopped to check out the “Abundant Future” exhibit and it did not disappoint. Beautiful paintings connected to gardens, farms and fields. The lower level “Farm to Table” art exhibit was also very interesting. The most unique display was the “Reforestation of the Imagination” exhibit which include virtual reality technology. We were also pleasantly surprised to know the rooftop garden was completed- the views from the roof were exceptional! This museum is always a must stop for our family!

By sajjuly |

The exhibit changes regularly. Small enough to tour in half of a day. Also has a hands on childcenter.

By Terri K |

Fun to make our own after seeing all on display. The basement had paper and cutters and lots of smaller tables for us kids to try this style of art. Lots of shapes making visual illusions. So super inspiring.

By lindabWisconsin |

Various themes at different times. Check website for classes & also kids projects. Yearly have birds in art, concerts in the summer. Beautiful gardens in the summer, many wedding pics taken here. Something for everyone, have been taking my daughter there since she was 2 now she is 13

By Jeff K |

My wife & I look forward to all the exhibitions that they have at the LYW Art Museum. They are always very good - excellent. Birds In Art was excellent again this year with varied media creatively curated. The artists come from all over the world. If you plan to see the exhibition next year you won't be disappointed.

By Northwoods_Newbie |

Birds in Art 2012 was wonderful. We did not have the opportunity to see the sculpture garden and I am looking forward to returning.

By Nora R |

In August, 2018 a group of my friends went to this museum. The exhibit was breath-taking as the artist used empty bullet shell casing to create numerous items. It was intriguing, creative, and very interesting as well as inspirational!!

By Wendy G |

Besides the great birds in art collection, Leigh Yawkey welcomes national changing exhibits. Free will offering, and a lovely sculpture garden.

By Tom P |

Located just east and up the hill from downtown Wausau this museum is well worth the stop. Free admission and a very first class display of talent from all over, the bird exhibit will begin in September. On a nice day you can begin in the sculpture garden and proceed to the different area throughout the building. The lower level has an area for little kids too. No cost however donations are welcome and well worth your visit!

By dikline |

We loved the NASA related art, especially by Rockwell and Annie Liebowitz. Very special woodcuts with a video the explain the process and a lawn of interesting bronze statutes.

By emma_Wisconsin |

It’s an amazing small museum with free admission. My husband said the last time he was here was 30 years ago. The landscaping was very beautiful. We were so impressed with Federico Uribe’s artwork display, they were so amazing. Very family friendly place. Strongly recommend!!

By Katydid |

This museum did a great job displaying all the art. The art was varied and wonderful look it at. I wish we had more time to look through all of it.

By keewest75 |

Beautiful museum with a great mix of eclectic exhibits. A visit to this museum should be included in every visit to Wausau. Great weekend hours and free admission!

By TravelingTessa60 |

Never been there before and always wanted to go. Took 4 kids with me, ages 12-16. They were not real interested. Maybe younger kids would be? We all did enjoy the art gallery of bird paintings/pictures and sculptures. A few pieces of the Cut Out and students art were interesting as well. Very nice building and I'm sure in the summer it's pretty on the grounds. Great drive through a historic district. It doesn't take long to walk through and the price is right - no charge. Donations appreciated.

By ChippewaJohnson |

Spring break and we couldn't afford to go to the beaches or other warm spots, but we found this museum to be a fantastic day trip from Chippewa Falls.

There is a very unique opportunity to see one of the most extensive exhibits of MC Escher's artwork within an 1.5 hour drive. Absolutely fantastic exhibit and wonderful gem of a museum.

By Marc L |

What a great exhibition! And what a beautiful sculpture garden. But even more important was the great welcome from the hostess. So much attention to her (Dutch) visitors almost made us shy. Oh yes, the exhibition was fantastic or did I mention that😉?

By Brenda P |

Beautiful grounds ana buldings and the traveling bird exhibit was awesome. All free. Impressed with the dedicated staff and the amount of visitors.

By golden15 |

Children are welcomed. Kids activity area downstairs.
Toddlers enjoy as well. This is a quiet, pretty place to visit year round. Situated on Wausau's historic East Hill. Convenient parking,
accessible for all. Friendly docents. Especially unique gardens.
Fall Bird festival is the annual must-see. No dislikes.

By dtesno |

The museum itself is outstanding, but the Birds in Art exhibit is even more outstanding. Each year this is one event we look forward to. World class artists and birds. A great combo! A must for birders!!

By yumtum2002 |

It was interesting. I always like to observe the different exhibits! The outdoor statues and art are always a sight to see.

By Tanya D |

What a wonderful place to visit!! The building itself is well cared for and beautiful. The 2018 bird art exhibit runs until November 28th and well worth seeing. The museum is full of bird paintings. Truly an amazing place. Don't forget to check out the charming animal sculptures in the garden and the willow seat enclosure. A must see if you love birds!. Oh, and it's free. just enjoy,

By SchDon |

We are locals and try to get to Leigh Yawkey Museum at least once a year. Besides a permanent art collection, they have a rotating collection at various times during the year. Right now into November is Birds in Art. This also changes each year, but they always have Birds in Art each Fall. The grounds are also wonderful! Statues, gardens, walkways and seats thruout with placards of the artists. This should be a must see for anyone visiting Wausau and all local residents as well. You won't be sorry! Nice place to sit and take in the seasons! This is always free and they do take donations!

By Nikki S |

We almost missed the two exhibit rooms. Please check in at the desk and ask where to go. There is also an outdoor display.

By heinzandmary |

Exhibits rotate so each time you go you see different highlighted art. Staff is always friendly and helpful, and the programs for the kids in the summer are great. they also occasionally have entertainment outdoors in the garden in the summer. Beautiful

By PriceBL |

Top quality, big city museum, in small town setting. Make it a Fall visit so you can do the bird art show.

By roonsters |

Beautiful building, interesting sculpture garden, and interesting exhibits for all ages. Worth the trip!

By juliemburns |

Excellent museum. Cozy atmosphere, friendly people, and an excellent opportunity to enrich the soul through art. They offer art reach opportunities for people of all ages and all backgrounds. Love it, Love it, Love it.

By Daniel J |

Wonderful little museum. The outdoor sculptures are interesting and fun. The indoor exhibit "Birds in Art" is stunning and showcasing a range of styles. The 2016 exhibit features 112 artists and is limited to art created in the last 3 years, which makes it very fresh to the eye.
Digression: If you enjoy "Birds in Art," you really must take in a wood carving exhibition that includes the wildfowl genre sometime.

By Sheila L |

This is a wonderful museum with travelling exhibits. When my daughter was in elementary school the class would go twice a year, have artists talk to them and do hands on activities,at times, they exhibit the kids art work also. There is a beautiful sculpture garden outside and benches to sit and marvel. A must-see when you are in Wausau. We live here and try to get to it at least a few times a year.

By Dennis H |

Super friendly staff. Had a couple Audubon and Wyeths I found interesting. The chair exhibit had an interesting Gerhy (who knew he did cardboard furniture?)

By david n |

This is a beautiful museum inside and out. And there is no charge although one will want to donate generously.
Volunteer staff friendly & knowledgable.

By Geof J |

We visited on a Saturday to see the Birds in Art exhibit. This is an exhibit of artwork of birds that is held every year and is world renowned. The art work was stunning, the museum was very nice and best of all - it is free! From the welcome we received upon entering (the greeters are great at letting you know all there is to see) to the art to the sculpture gardens we just loved our visit. This rivals many art museums in much larger cities.

By Robert W |

This museum is a Wisconsin gem. We come up from Chicago every year to see the "Birds in Art" exhibit. The museum is beautiful and the outdoor sculpture garden is relaxing and well maintained. This is a great place to stop if you are in the area.

By James P |

My wife and I chose to visit this location on a beautiful sunny Saturday just to get out of the hotel. What a great choice. This place is beautiful. The sculpture garden is beautiful with awesome sculptures. The old historical building is updated with modern architecture. Inside is simply awesome. Very quite and interesting. Awesome artwork with a great staff. This is the perfect place to take your spouse or your date if you like interesting places with lasting memories. There is no charge for admission.

By GLars |

The building fits right into a lovely near downtown neighborhood on the side of a hill. All the paintings are well displayed and the sculpture garden is thoughtfully laid out too. Worth a trip - expect 1 to 2 hours depending upon how long you like to linger and look a things.

By kathleenl270 |

Always enjoy going up to see the changing exhibits that they have. Sometimes living in the same city we don't take advantage of the wonderful Art museum and gardens we have right here. If you enjoy the Arts this is one place you should not miss when visiting Wausau.

By Frank T |

Neat works of art for the whole family. Interactive oragami was very fun for the kids. Great way to kill an hour or two.

By Renee B |

Very interesting if you are a Bird person, this is a small museum but very nice. Very glad we stopped.

By Jessica0823 |

We were spending the day in Wausau, decided to stop at the museum and didn't know about the exhibit by Frederico Uribe. But what an amazing thing to "stumble upon"! We were absolutely fascinated by his use of what others would view as "garbage" to create such stunning and joyful works of art. What a master! I laughed out loud at some of his creations - they are so whimsical and gorgeous. I highly recommend that everyone take advantage of this family friendly exhibit while it is still here. Great job, museum staff!

(And, as always, the grounds and sculpture garden are relaxing and inviting...)

By coptrdrivr |

Birds in Art is an annual event that is always a treat and a credit to the Greater Wausau community. It brings art from near and far- U.S., North America, Europe and more to be enjoyed in a beautiful setting. All that is asked is to consider donating in order to support the Museum and its continued quality work. A local treasure!

By marlow54 |

This museum is extremely nice. Unique. Children's area. Wildlife art. Travelling exhibits. Beautiful grounds, weather permitting.

By chris w |

if you're in Wausau its a nice place to visit for an hour or so. My kids and i were turned off by the many sketches of roadkill though...they didn't think of it as artistic at all.
Nice area for young children to try oragami or sketching downstairs.

By Mary M |

This show runs through February 25th, and worth the time to view these innovative works of art. Fascinating works that make you think--how did they do that? Colorful quilts are complimented by the woods from around the world. Practical, smaller pieces (wine corks, pens, key fobs) are also available in the book/greeting area.

By SamK2 |

Stopped in on during a hot weekend to enjoy the AC and look around. Ended up finding an amazing exhibit going on. All the staff are friendly and helpful. Plus it's free! Can't wait to see and explore other cool exhibits that come. Would highly recommend a stop here. You should also take a walk around the grounds as well, truly beautiful.

By Moonbeam9848 |

Love the birds in art. Also there are new exhibits throughout the year. Great area for kids too. Have always enjoyed this museum.

By Wausau_WIWapper |

Visited the museum this past Thursday evening for the Shaker exhibit and it did not disappoint. In fact, I don’t think I have ever been disappointed with any of the many exhibits frequented over the years. The new renovation is amazing! Can’t wait for spring to see how the grounds turn out.
If you visit Wausau you'll want to go here.

By Anna H |

This free museum is in a Tudor-style mansion, with a modern addition, that is on a hillside in a neighborhood. There is a fantastic sculpture garden, with the art being incorporated into the natural settings. The current temporary exhibit is a gigantic pair of cranes, with the feathers being made of plastic bags.
The interior has rotating special exhibits, currently involving chairs. The permanent collection focuses on avian related art, with a nice selection of Wyeth's.
There is a wing the focuses on the various aspects of sketching.
The staff was probably the most friendly that I have ever encountered.
A must stop when in the Wausau area.

By z0607 |

The combination of a beautiful building, sculpture garden and wonderful art is a delight. We spent 2 hours and did not stop and enjoy every art piece. The staff is great as well, very welcoming. Photography is allowed.

By PatCherylSchofieldWI |

Area is fortunate to have such a high class art museum. It is a pleasant surprise for a city of this size and does a wonderful job of serving the entire population. A facility to be proud of.

By Gerri B |

We enjoyed the outside art sculptures as well as the extensive indoor displays. The building itself is beautiful, airy in feel & well-maintained & the staff was very kind.

By Vickys-Guy |

My wife and I try to find new and interesting things to do on day trips. Some are busts, but this was not. We definitely want to come back in the summer. Art museums make me think of stuffy, snooty places with dark wood and serious people. This one is fun for old folks like us, and six year old kids, too. The current exhibit is especially good for kids.

I can't believe that I have lived within 90 miles of this and never visited, or even heard of it. It was worth the drive.

The garden has realistic and interesting sculptures. I'm sure the flowers and plants will be beautiful in a month.

It's free and well done.

By HSchoell |

This art museum is a wonderful treasure in downtown Wausau. The building and grounds were beautiful and the exhibits were very interesting. We also enjoyed the downstairs area where children were allowed to play. It was just a very enjoyable experience!

By Tricia O |

The exhibits are nice, facility is breathtaking and clean. The only drawback is most of the art is of birds. Would be nice to see something other than birds/wildlife.

By sunsetbay2016 |

If you like birds and art, you should put this on your calendar. Wonderful exhibit inside as well as the outside gardens.

By cricket2014 |

We've been to the art museum several times and it's always a fun, memorable experience. The quality of their exhibitions and the beautiful setting of the museum along with their friendly staff is superb.

By RibMountain60370 |

This museum has it all. From great exhibits rotating through to wonderful permeant collections. The free audio tour was a great bonus. I would recommend this to anyone. Plus with my limited attention span I can take it all in and not feel overwhelmed like some museums, Also it is free admission!

By Bosanchubo |

This is an awesome art museum, and offers many different, well-planned themes throughout the year. My favorite is "Birds in Art", in the fall. The children's "hands-on" section encourages families to attend this gem of a destination in Wausau, WI. Free, but donations appreciated.

By HappyTraveler0505 |

Who would have thought a community the size of Wausau could support a world class museum like the Leigh Yawkey? It's fun to know the original museum was the former residence of the Forester family. A recent addition offers a contemporary contrast to the original 1930's footprint. As museums go, the Leigh Yawkey is young. It's only 40 years old, but it has grown quickly. As you approach the entry you are greeted with stunning wildlife and avian sculptures along the walk way. There is a separate sculpture garden to enjoy that is filled with something for every one. The flower gardens that surround the museum are a visual delight. Don't miss the small walled garden tucked at the corner of the original house section. Inside the museum the display areas will impress you with the large open spaces available for 3-dimensional displays as well as the more than ample wall space for art viewing. There are two levels to the main section of the museum. The permanent collections are extensive and worth taking the time to view. The Leigh Yawkey is Family Friendly! Children will enjoy exploring the sculpture garden and will have fun enjoying the area in the lower level dedicated to the 'younger crowd' coming to the museum. Kids can have fun exploring hands on challenges and sensory experiences. While the museum is best known for it's Birds in Art exhibit which occurs September thru November of each year, the exhibits that come to the museum the remainder of the year promise to delight and satisfy visitors from the novice level to the most sophisticated and knowledgable of museum attendees. It's important to note that the Staff is welcoming, friendly and knowledgable. They are happy to answer any questions you may have about the museum or the community. Visiting the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum is an experience you will be glad you took the time for...don't miss it! There is no doubt that once you take the time to visit, each time you return to Wausau this museum will make your list of things you want to do!

By AJ M |

The Woodson museum has a lot of rotating shows as well as a great permanent collection that really shines. The outdoor pieces and kids area really round out an exceptional attraction. I've attended this museum many times before, and the latest trip was as wonderful as any in years past. Considering many of the lackluster galleries I've paid to visit, the fact this museum is still a free attraction really sets it above all the rest. If you're in the Wausau area, I highly recommend this excellent museum!

By Pinkus |

I cannot tell you how many times schools force children to go to this place for field trips here in Wausau. They have paintings/art, with their most popular being the bird exhibit that comes through periodically. If you like art museums, you'd probably like it here. If you don't care about art that much, you'll hate this place.

By JanisAusten |

This is a beautiful museum with a wonderful sculpture garden. But what it's most known for is its annual Birds in Art exhibit. This year's exhibit is a must-see for birders and art lovers alike. All media are represented - water colors, oils, charcoal, wood sculptures, bronzes, even art made of turkey feathers. This is the best bird art in the world, and highly competitive internationally. And you get to enjoy it smack dab in the middle of Wisconsin!

This museum was first designed as the home for the Yawkey's daughter in 1914. The Yawkey's only had one daughter, Leigh. This now contains a research library, exhibits, gift shop and the administrative offices. The history on the exhibits is very interesting, a must see and is just right across the street from the Yawkey's house. Even some interesting info on The Plumer Mansion and how it came to some very disappointing news you will hear about this house. The history is amazing and even have some fun activities for children!

This is a beautiful museum. The collections are amazing and the exhibit space is extremely well thought out and displayed. Staff was very friendly. Would definitely go back every year. Don't miss the outdoor sculpture garden

By Beatriz121 |

My husband and I were very impressed with the museum and the bird exhibit that is currently on display. The works of art are juried and come from all over the world. The exhibit was much more expansive than I thought. Besides for the pieces of art that are on display, the sculpture garden is also worth visiting because of its beauty, tranquility, and uniqueness of the sculptures. There is no charge for visiting but donations are accepted. Wausau can be very proud of being home to the Yawkey Woodson Museum.

By leafmaker431 |

exhibits change throughout the year,so, always something interesting. Also has beautiful grounds with art work

By Yoshi H |

Very nice small museum in Wausau, both indoor and outdoor facilities. I am a bit tired of Birds in art, it seems to last for 6 months.

By Lucy S |

Wonderful day of beauty. Outside grounds many pieces of sculpture to enjoy. Inside several floors of exhibits. Fall leaves perfect. From rooftop gallery several sculptures but the views were stupendous looking over downtown Wausau. Art work, I am envious of such talent. So thankful this is shared with the community.

One of the best small museums in the Midwest, maybe anywhere. We drove up from Chicago just for the most recent " Birds in Art " exhibit, having heard it was unique and outstanding. And, it truly was. You definitely do not have to be either a bird lover, or a museum goer to enjoy this. The grounds contain some really outstanding sculptures, and the current exhibit contains 50 or more pieces that I would be more than happy to have on my walls at home, and I doubt I could say this about more than a handful of other art museums we have ever visited....

By April S |

This a lovely landscaped museum. It is free so that's always nice. A great portion of the museum was closed. It had a lovely ceramic exhibit . I just have one comment, the staff did not have to follow us around so much. I had one staff member follow me into the bathroom even. I feel that we were dressed appropriately and on our best behavior so I don't know why. I get that some people are jerks but we weren't those people.

By Ann H |

We LOVE the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum! The outdoor sculpture garden is our absolute favorite. Beautiful gem, near downtown Wausau.

By Cynthia B |

Yawkey Woodson museum is one of my favorite places to visit.
The programs such as toddler Tuesday's are a wonderful way to spend the morning with small children.
I bring families that I work with to the museum, as well as when my own children and grandchildren come to Wausau to visit.
The staff at the museum are great, the grounds are beautiful.
This a a worthwhile place to visit.

By Patrat2000 |

This place is famous for its annual Birds in Art exhibit in the fall, but does have nice exhibits year round.

By Sam P |

The birds in art exhibit is worth the visit but the remainder of the year there is "canned art" road shows

By matt_greenberg4 |

Not a very large museum, but it's a good fit for the area. They do a great job bringing in wonderful exhibits that are always enjoyable. It's donation and volunteer based so only spend what you're comfortable with. It's a nice way to spend some time in Wausau. Check out their website for the latest news.

By JAK5878 |

They had three different exhibits when I went, all of which were beautiful (especially on a dreary winter day). The staff was very friendly and enthusiastic about the artwork presented.

By laurenh743 |

Great for the whole family- unbelievably still free. Enjoyably art for everyone to look at indoors and out, and also fun kids activities.

By Dawn S |

Visited this past fall to view the birds in art exhibit. Just beautiful. I highly recommend it. Plan on going back in the summer to view the displays in the garden. And it's free, always. What better way to spend time with family and enjoy the arts.

By Scamperaway |

You could almost hear the birds as you viewed the Birds in Art 2012 exhibit at this Wausau treasure, the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. We spent several relaxing hours enjoying the variety of paintings and sculptures at this classy museum set in a stately building. The outdoor sculpture garden was also a treat.

By bobbie492017 |

I visited the Tiffany Glass display in February and had visited the Birds in Art exhibit last fall. The museum is easy to reach and located in a quiet hillside area of beautiful historic homes. I found walking through the gallery and surrounding outdoor sculpture garden to be a peaceful, de-stressing experience. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. They all displayed such enthusiasm for their current exhibits, answering all my questions and offering background information. Admission is free, rare for such a quality experience; donations are accepted, if desired. The building is physically accessible throughout and they have wheelchairs and strollers available. There is a small gift shop, and on the lower level there is an area with a variety of motivating hands-on activities for children. The museum's schedule of current and upcoming exhibits is on their website. Looking forward to returning!

This art museum has wonderful rotating exhibits with optional recorded descriptions of certain pieces, as well as great activities for children and beautiful outdoor gardens with sculptures. Birds in Art is going on right now. Don't miss it!

By Jackiegh |

Didn't expect such a nice art museum- merits a couple visits. There is a nice sculpture garden outside, in addition to rotating exhibits

By Susan M |

This museum is a gem. Filled with wildlife art pieces so real you want to touch, especially loved the Owen J. Gromme birds.Don't miss the inviting sculpture garden.

By Brent45 |

In addition to its excellent collection of bird art, the museum mounts temporary exhibitions. The Art of Seating, 200 Years of American Design featured more than 40 antique and contemporary chairs designed by the likes of Charles and Ray Eames, the Stickley Brothers -- plus architects Frank Lloyd Wright, Frank Gehry and post-modernist Robert Venturi. Outside in the garden, we marveled at the giant sculpture of a pair of sandhill cranes in a mating dance.

As an art major in college and someone that grew up with access to Boston and New York’s art museums, I am very picky about art museums. I had low expectations for this small town museum but was very happily surprised! It has a lovely collection of well curated art pieces including several Andrew Wyeth pieces. When we visited, the exhibits were “birds in art” and “quilts.” The sculpture garden was also beautiful and we went back the next day to read and draw in the peaceful garden again. Highly recommend!!

Went not knowing what to expect and stayed 3 hours between the chair exhibit birds of art outdoor park and meeting rushnee a volunteer
Who has changed my life and way I look at the world.
What a fantastic museum and wonderful volunteer,

Decided to stop in Wausau on a trip and glad we did. This museum was a find but enjoy the grounds before or after. The exhibits are wonderful. And the cost is right!

By HTCWI |

Just visited "The Garden at Night: A Photographic Journey" exhibit and it was beautiful! I will definitely be going back before the end of the summer! This is always a great spot to visit with family and friend who are in town for a few days! Every time I visit the new exhibits broaden my range in the art world! Also if visiting with young children - don't forget to stop in the children's area on the lower level. It is always connected to the main exhibits on display and there are plenty of really cool exploratory activities and books for children. Also either on your way in or before you leave -take a walk around the sculpture garden - it is peaceful and again kid friendly! Finally - this museum is free so consider leave a small donation in the box at the entrance :) Thank you for always being wonderful Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum!

By T. D. |

This is a wonderful art museum with many fabulous pieces of art. It is not huge, but it’s so worth the visit. Especially if you love nature paintings, sculpture, etc.

By handymantulsa |

Went with sis and GMA and it had a nice temporary display. High quality place in a smaller city. The displays tend to be seasonal which is nice.

By phxwilsons |

I loved the American Folk Art quilt exhibit. It included historic and cultural quilts including a "wooden" quilt made from Hurricane Katrina wooden rubble. Be sure to check out the Pacific Ocean quilt on the lower level. It's unbelievable.

By Valedia |

This little museum was just perfect for a 2 hour visit. The grounds have some awesome sculptures outside, and the "Birds in Art" show had a wide variety of artwork that we all enjoyed for different reasons. The admission was free, there were audio tours available if you chose, and you could wander at will from room to room and never felt rushed to move on. It was easy to get to, and there was plenty of parking. Check it out - you won't regret it!

By QCWilly |

This is a jewel of Wausau. Upon my visit was a display of wood work art. I enjoyed this very much, especially after seeing the fine craftsmanship at the Yawkey house.

By Carolyn K |

The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum has something to captivate everyone from young to old. The featured Art exhibits guide you through with an audio tour option, you can use one of the museum's iPods or download an app for you phone to hear descriptions and background information of the unique art on exhibit.
On the lower level is a special exploration of the arts area just for the young artists, with hands on art experience and an exhibit area for their creations.
Don't forget to walk through the outside gardens with beautiful sculptures and landscape.

By Mark E |

If it hadn't been for Tripadvisor, I probably would not have even heard of this fabulous art museum in Wausau when I was in the area. It was in a different part of the city than where I was staying. I decided to visit based on the highly positive reviews on here. I am so glad I spent time at Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum! It is truly a hidden gem in Wausau and was worth finding. I needed something to do during a rainy afternoon, and this was perfect. They had an impressive collection of art for a city the size of Wausau. I spent about 1.5 hours here. I really enjoyed the exhibited art of wildlife by artist Owen J. Gromme. The museum is also very clean, neat, organized, and inviting. There were friendly staff members happy to answer any questions that people had. There were not too many people visiting when I was here, so it was nice and quiet. It was a real soothing experience. I am glad I took the time to stop at this art museum. I am not really an art person, but I found it very worthwhile and inspiring. Definitely give this a chance--even if you don't like art! It made a rainy afternoon better!

By Kathleen W |

The Leigh Yawkey Woodson has provided our young high school artists opportunities for which we are grateful. It also is a refuge for anyone wishing to absorb quiet and creative moments in a beautiful museum/home. The level of art is very notable and we especially enjoy the permanent glass pieces. Thanks to all the staff that makes it happen in Wausau!

By Terry M |

With their continuing rotation of touring and internally organized exhibitions, the Woodson Art Museum is a true gem in central Wisconsin for visitors and locals alike. Their annual, Internationally recognized and eagerly anticipated Birds in Art exhibition draws attending artists from across the globe, allowing museum visitors to meet and mingle during the public weekend opening each early September. At any time of year, well worth a visit to see exciting and thought-provoking exhibitions.

By bjweber1907 |

Where does one begin. Stroll their lovely gardens and enjoy the large size art pieces by yourself, with your children or grandchildren and you'll fall in love with the Leigh Yawkey Museum. The Birds in Art annual event is worthy of saving the date for. Yet year around exhibits are most inviting as well. One's ability to just stroll through the museum at your own pace, enjoy a conversation with a staff who are very knowledgeable, also made our several trips here a memorable one indeed. The Kids area was all around fun and educational. I feel so much at home here and it's always on list when we return to Wausau.

By Jeanne F |

I highly recommend this place. The building itself is gorgeous. The grounds are gorgeous. And, of course, the bird artwork is out of this world! Be sure to go to the rooftop--wonderful views!

And it's free!!

By Russ V |

a visit to this museum is always free. They have rotating exhibits throughout the year that change approximately every 3 months. In addition, they have a wonderful permanent collection. The museum specializes in birds and art. The average visit probably takes about 90 minutes.if the weather permits, there is also a nice outdoor collection.

By HTCWI |

Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum has amazing exhibits all year long. Always a relaxing and enjoyable visit! Beautiful gardens to stroll through during the summer season after checking out the art. Kids area for little ones to explore as well. Definitely worth a visit!

By Andy W |

Great free art museum with beautiful grounds to walk around. Would highly recommend for a visit if in tow.

By Karen Z |

The Bird Art exhibit was well done. We enjoyed walking through the gardens as well as spending time on the rooftop. Museum is free.

By Bob P |

We go almost every year and are never disappointed. Spectacular staff and volunteers. A must visit if in area!

By Jerry B |

We go there once in a while to see the traveling exhibits. They are usually there for a few months. This time it was wood and quilts. I found the wood quite interesting while my daughter preferred the quilts and my wife liked both.

By akmn |

What a great free activity. We spent about two hours enjoying the Walter Wick exhibit along with the Audubon to Wyeth along with a few other collections. Art was well displayed. The museum was very spacious spread over two floors. Had a nice kids area with crafts they could make and take home, had a video showing how to do craft, very neat. Outdoor sculpture garden is well worth the walk around, look for the little kitty. Highly recommend!

By Sharon D |

A museum devoted to bird art sounds like an acquired taste, but the Woodson Art Museum is delightful. It is manageable in size, and each image is accompanied by a detailed explanation of its creation. Admission is free, and there are often lectures and tours by visiting artists. We saw everything in a couple of hours.

By schneidkathy |

We were startled and pleased that there was no cost, even with the guide. Great place, warm friendly people

By jfadds |

What a wonderful resource for the area.
Any city would be happy to have this museum in its city limits

Now there is a wonderful show that has birds as its theme. Amazing how the various artists treated avian creatures in so many different methods.

The sculpture garden is also worth a visit- if nothing else- enjoy the Deborah Butterfield horse there .

By NorthwoodsWoman2013 |

By having a world class origami exhibit in the middle of small town Wisconsin, this lovely museum just keeps upping their standard of excellence and diversity. Remarkable! Then there are still all the other great works in the permanent collection, plus Owen Gromme's studio, which places you right there in the middle of pure genius. If you visit Wisconsin and miss this place, you haven't seen Wisconsin.

By Bethany B |

I really enjoy that they get new exhibits every few months. It keeps me coming back. I’ve gone here with my boyfriend and both of our families. Well maintained and clean place to enjoy art. Could spend a short amount of time or a few hours and have a good time. Recently went to the origami exhibit, very cool!

By Mike W |

Don't miss this hidden gem in Wausau! Great building, great collection and very impressive traveling exhibits.

By gerald k |

My wife and I brought some artwork we had inherited. We wanted to see if anything was of value. It wasn't. But the people were extremely nice and helpful. In looking around the gardens ar beautiful and the inside is spotless. I was truly impressed that such a small town could have such a nice exhibit.

By Vivienne27 |

This lovely museum has world class artists and a fantastic outdoor sculpture garden with fountains, etc. Well worth the time. Does not have admission fees either (optional donations).

By Stacy T |

We just loved the outdoor sculpture and the beautiful way it was displayed with the landscaping. And it was free!

By Star N |

Easy to find. Easy to park. Easy to stroll, sit, and view. Helpful staff. Free admission. The fall show Birds is a great show. Inside or outside you can find pieces filled with fun, humor, reality, and in flight. Very worth your time and support.

By Barbara B |

The Woodson Art Museum is a real treasure for Wausau, displaying wonderful wildlife paintings and sculptures. Set in the beautiful family home adds to the charm of the exhibit. The "Birds in Art" show was very special.

By Julie R |

Came here over Thanksgiving break on my first visit to WI. Loved this little museum. Perfect for a few hours. Loved the new exhibit with National Geographic photos. Beautiful bird art as well. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. Definitely recommend for people who live nearby or for visitors as well. It's nice that it's manageable to get through everything in about 3 hours or less depending on your pace.

By travelingmom3333 |

Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum is known for its bird exhibit, but if you aren't into aviary, there is so much more there to see and do!

An outside garden, which is especially lovely in the spring, summer and fall, showcases manicured lawns and statues made of various materials (bronze, wood, etc.) And don't forget to check out the 'secret garden'. There are days I don't even enter the actual museum it's so relaxing visiting the garden. No weeding required by me with all the benefits.

There is usually a rotating exhibit in the museum itself with such artist's work gracing its walls including M.C. Escher and Walter Wick (I SPY book series). Downstairs there is a fantastic children's area. A great place to hang out with your kiddos. Make some art, read books.

Oh, and the best part is it is FREEEEEEE!!!! Seriously. Go check it out.

By janiel00 |

It was amazing. We were there 2 hours and then we walked the outdoor sculpture gardens.
We saw the M. C. Escher exhibit. Fascinating. Enjoyed the audio tour.
They also had an artist exhibit from Madison, Wi who was delightful.

By bikerchickhpp |

This is a wonderful place to visit when in Wausau. The exhibits are amazing and presented so well too. Something for everyone.

By Anne W |

I come here often. with my best friend, or with my family, which all enjoy.Often times there are chldrens interactive things to see and do..great for the whole family

By Fricky1 |

If you love birds, animals/art, or botanical drawings, feast your eyes. Nice gallery spaces as well as an attractive smaller sculpture garden. Admission......free! Really well done.

By Trixies-MomandDad |

This is a very nice free museum. The grounds were lovely, the weather did not cooperate for a nice outdoor tour. The museum itself is filled with beautiful bird art. My only criticism is that there is almost nothing from the famous wildlife artist, Owen Gromme. We were a bit disappointed in that as expected to see some of the originals there. Also, I would not take children to this museum.

By Tom P |

Located in the heart of Wausau just up the hill from downtown. This museum boasts international exhibits as well as a Chihuly glass basket exhibit.
First class museum that will impress you. No entrance fee however donations are accepted and worth your visit. Rivals exhibits seen in much larger metro areas. Well worth your time!

My husband and I took a day trip to Wausau, WI to see the exhibit "Medieval to Metal: The Art & Evolution of the Guitar" at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. Wausau is a beautiful area and this lovely museum fits right in. It appears to be a mansion upon which an extension was added to house permanent and traveling exhibits.

The museum's primary focus in wildlife art. It holds an annual event to which renowned wildlife artist are invited to produce and show their work. The sculpture garden features several beautiful and interesting wildlife sculptures of different media. We were there on a lovely spring day prior to any plants blooming, but I can only imagine how lovely this garden is in the summer months with plants and flowers alike in bloom. If you'd like, you can bring a picnic lunch, throw out a blanket and enjoy the beauty of the garden.

I cannot say enough about the staff! It was obvious the two women with which we interfaced loved this museum. They were enthusiastic, knowledgeable and helpful.

The "Guitar" exhibition was excellent. My husband is a musician so he knows quite a bit about guitars. I have learned something about guitars through him, but both of us learned so much more from this exhibit. Listening devices are available so you can listen to small snippets of music made by the instruments and find out more about their history. The instruments span centuries and are in beautiful condition. The cases are clear on 3 sides so you can see the sides and some of the backs of most of the instruments. That may not seem like a big deal, but it is since some of the evolution of the guitar and its sound is affected by its shape. The written descriptions accompanying the displays are informative and well done. At the lower level of the museum, an acoustic and electric guitar are set out for people to noodle on if they so desire. The museum has and will feature artists playing various types of guitar music throughout the duration of the exhibit. NOTE: THIS EXHIBIT ONLY LASTS UNTIL MAY 31, 2015! However, it is a traveling exhibit which has not yet found a home. The Yawkey Woodson hopes to be its home in the future.

This museum is charming and is worth the visit should you be in Wausau. My husband and I loved it and I wanted to share it with those of you who like discovering small gems as you travel.

By Scott B |

Fantastic place to visit. Very family friendly with creative space for kids. Excellent exhibits, including world famous Birds in Art each fall. Very nice outdoor sculpture garden.

By DebbyM |

When I visited the museum, i=the theme was birds - in many different medias. There were paintings, mixed media pieces, and sculptures.

Also, the museum is handicap accessible, with ramps and elevators.

By Gladi507 |

Expected bird exhibits, which are there, but also enjoyed the variety offered. Enjoyed the children's book area, what creativity! The photographs were thought provoking. AND iT'S ALL FREE! Loved the sculpture garden.

By Richard J |

Took teenage grandkids to this museum to view their exhibit on birds. They had never been, and were only mildly interested in pleasing us by going. Within 15 minutes they were drawn into the wide variety of art. Staff helped us identify a painting in their collection by Fredrick Somers, an artist they had met. Then we discovered the temporary exhibit on cut outs. Whimsical and stunning. The stayed fascinated for 90 minutes with no reverting to cell phones until we were back in the car. Congratulations to the museum and its docents.

By Joshua R |

Great FREE museum. Mainly consists of bird art, but we really enjoyed the sculpture garden as well. Recommended.

By Alan |

Really nice display areas and very comfortable. Always keep my eyes open for what's next and will return when there is something of interest to us.

By jnskojnsko |

The Birds in Art juried show attracts artists worldwide, and its held in September. The Owen Gromme exhibit is a constant, adn other travelling shows abound thru the year. Activities for children and learning opportunities for adults make this grteat for all ages. Enjoy the sculpture garden or ice sculptures depending on the season.

By NorthwoodsWoman2013 |

Remarkable bird art, as always, plus the Owen Gromme display was breathtaking! The newly opened addition is lovely!

By MissPriss234 |

Location, continuity. Collections visit and are in a beautiful building. The place is easy to find and makes a permanent pleasant memory.

By Judy1966240 |

Although it had been a few years since our last visit to the museum for the annual fall exhibit of juried works -- the Birds in Art show -- we found this trip to be well worth a drive to Wausau. There was such a nice variety of media presented and the setting is delightful. Can't believe there is still no admission charge!
The audio tour is worthwhile and we enjoyed listening to the artists voices explaining their own work. We picked a cold, damp day for our visit so we skipped walking through the lovely outdoor sculpture garden. A visit in October is recommended when the trees are turning color.

By Darcey W |

Activities inside and outside of the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum will never disappoint. Come alone or bring a group.

By Mary Jo K |

This amazing free museum holds an annual “Birds in the Arts Exhibit” from Sept 7 to Dec 1 each year. This year features more than 127 works of art related to birds. There are wood and stone carvings; water color, oil, graphite and colored pencil paintings; bronze and metal sculptures and so much more.

There is a huge variety of artists. I took some pictures to show the incredible detail in these art works. One of my favorites is a bird and background made out of cut paper.

In addition to this annual Exhibit, there is a sculpture garden and several permanent exhibit rooms.

A truly remarkable place. Note each picture I post is followed by the artists description.

By Jerry B |

Went with my family. Usually am more interested in the changing displays but this time I did not understand it. Others in my family seemed to like ti though. Will definitely go back when there is something to my liking there.

By KirkandNan |

This free art museum is truly a treasure of north-central WI. Haven't been here since they added on. We loved the new Owen Gromme exhibit- he's an awesome wildlife/birt artist with WI roots. I would definitely recommend you visit this museum while the Birds in Art exhibit is still there. Definitely worth your time!

By prettylillies99 |

Our first time here. Seeing just the outside, I was at awe. The garden was awesome. There is no charge to go through.

By Barry K |

The outside garden path was very pleasant. The Walter Wick display was wonderful to look at. The people inside were helpful. It is a beautiful museum and it is nice that they have new displays.

By Penny W |

This is the most diverse art museum in the area. Between the facility itself and the beautiful 4 season outside art gardens, you can't go wrong! Rotating art exhibits keeps this museum always fresh and exciting. They have a great Hands-on Children' s Museum downstairs that is both educational and fun for children of all ages and a perfect way to segue children into the arts.

By Alan E |

I have been here several times they have great displays. The place was neat and clean they show their pride in what they do.
A touch of class in a small town.

By bluestraycat |

The museum was a great way to spend an afternoon. Sculpture garden outside was beautiful. Lots of beautiful paintings and exhibits indoors. They have permanent and temporary displays as well as an annual Birds in Art display every fall. Free admission and parking!

By Schneiders_10 |

Always a great presentation, not just during the fantastic Birds in Art display. The outdoor sculpture park is excellent and continues to grow. Our international guests think it is a fabulous museum and are impressed that a town the size of Wausau would have a world class museum like this. We visit several times a year because the exhibits change.

By DarMaMinneapolis |

We've tried to see the Woodson's "Birds in Art" fall exhibit over the past decade and have always been stimulated and delighted with that show and others. The Woodson is small yet has a quality collection and imaginative curators. When you're in Wisconsin, this art center is always worth a visit. Throughout the year there are about five exhibits of varied themes, not just great bird art: book art and other craft, fashion, iconoclast Wisconsin artists, etc . The Woodson's outdoor sculpture garden is a pleasant short walk, as well.

By Whynottodays |

An amazing exhibit of bird art this year plus 99 duck decoys.
This museum is a wonderful space with great gardens and garden statuary.

By Sfreddy31 |

We really enjoyed our stop here as well as our conversation with one of the staff members, I am sad that I don’t remember her name for this review because she deserves a kudos. My only complaint was that we came at a time that the exhibits were being changed out, so much of the museum wasn’t open. We will definitely be back if in the area.

By Tina T |

Took my kids and my little siblings here. It's super family friendly and also great for and adult outing.

By barretta |

We make the pilgrimage down here each year for the Birds in Art exhibit each fall. It is spectacularly good. The facility is exceptional, the docents pleasant, simple to park, nice little gift shop and a kid's area to take a break. I recommend it.

By northwoodsgal61 |

We often visit the "Birds in Art' exhibit, but on my most recent trip, my girlfriends and I saw a display of fashion created from recycled materials. Entitled "ReDress, this was a fantastic show. In addition to exhibits and special displays, the museum offers hands on classes and seminars for all ages. The museum itself is attractive, easy to walk through, and best of all - free!

By Puddler2014 |

Great Art Museum. I will have to go back in the summer to see the garden area with flowers in bloom. Very nice lady when you first walk in.

By JustLinky |

Famous for their Birds in Art exhibit (different every year), they also have some nice permanent collections. The great thing is that it is small so one can get a thorough view of everything in an hour or so. Outdoor sculpture garden is always interesting, too.

By LFL101 |

Worth a visit. Friendly staff, lovely building, sculpture garden and rooftop deck. It appears the exhibits change periodically so if you haven't visited in awhile it's time to stop in again.

By Margaret C |

What a treat to have this beautiful little museum in our back yards. The traveling exhibits are such fun and they always put such effort into making part of it accessible and interesting to children. With three little ones ages 6 and under, I not only feel comfortable bringing our family to the Yawkey Museum, my kids request it!

By DrDJJ |

This is a free attraction. Donations are voluntary. Has pictures of birds, with a usual traveling attraction that is usually very interesting.

By elcrawl |

I was back for the first time in a long time for their Medieval to Metal exhibit, which centered around guitars and the like. Honestly, it was kind of ho-hum. But aside from that, this place is definitely worth checking out. It's an old mansion, converted into an art museum and expanded over the years. There are outdoor sculptures and works, and the indoor gallery is quite expansive. Of course, they're famous for their Birds In Art exhibit, which lives up to the hype and is definitely a must-see. If you are in Wausau and looking for something to do check it out.

By mvoeg731 |

Really cool place to go and spend some time. Place for the kids to do crafts and stuff too. Nice place to have around to visit and see what they have going on when you need something to do.
