Staff are very nice and friendly

Worth a visit, you have to get a card, but it is something to see. You don't long in the space and there is a lot to see in the area.

Beautiful!

By runawaywinterbirds |

Never imagined such gorgeous architecture and decor in a North American city! More akin to something in Europe.

A Beautiful and Engaging Stop for the Whole Family

By Nichole |

During our family trip to Washington DC, we visited the Library of Congress and it quickly became one of our daughter’s favorite stops. We reserved our timed-entry tickets in advance, which is definitely something you need to plan for ahead of time.

The building itself is absolutely stunning. While we admired the beautiful architecture and exhibits, the girls completed a fun scavenger hunt that kept them engaged the whole time.

We decided to take our visit a step further by registering for our own Library of Congress Reading Room cards. Following the big orange arrows to the back room, we were photographed and given our special library cards. From there, we were able to explore the Reading Rooms, including the Kids Reading Room, which was a hit with the girls.

It was such a unique and enriching experience for the whole family and a highlight of our time in DC.

Pleasure

By jbdclaw |

Among the grand government buildings in Washington, DC, the Library of Congress may be the most stunningly beautiful.

Beautiful building

By Nel |

Beautiful building and well worth going in for a look around. It won’t take long to get round you can be in and out within the hour. Unfortunately the gift shop was closed when we were there.

A beautiful hidden treasure

By patriotsgirl58313 |

I have heard so many wonderful things about the Library of Congress and see photos of this place on TV I just had to see it for myself. This place is worth visiting. The interior of the building is incredibly beautiful as is the library. The exhibits in the David Rubenstein gallery were hands on, interactive, educational and informative. Thomas Jefferson's personal library will take your breath away. Entry is free and worth the visit. The gift shops are wonderful too,

"Wow"

By Callum |

The Library of Congress is the only thing that we had to queue for in our entire trip to Washington DC, which while standing outside, made us question what the cause for this was, given that the exterior of the building didn't stand out much against the others in DC.

However, from the moment you set foot inside the Main Hall of the building, all becomes clear. Both of us, in unison, said "Wow" and were then taken aback by the beauty of the inside of the building.

Having visited Rome and the Vatican a few years ago, when we later learned that the building had been styled on Italian Renaissance architecture, we can safely say that the architect absolutely nailed that.

I would highly recommend visiting on one of the days where tours of the Main Reading Room are available, as that then takes this even further. I have never seen a room or a library quite like this. The architecture is again, amazing, but the calm and welcoming atmosphere it creates is like nothing I have ever seen. If my University in the UK had something even close to this, I would definitely have spent as much time as possible in there completing my studies.

This is definitely a must-see when visiting DC.

Rely on the volunteers and not the staff

By Jane P |

The building is spectacular. While we were unsuccessful in getting a tour because the staff were not helpful, we lucked out by asking the many volunteer docents questions. They were a wealth of knowledge and offered lots of great tips about what to see in the exhibits.

Interesting...but no access to the actual library.

By 415Cyclist |

Interesting...but no access to the actual library. You get to access a balcony that overlooks the main reading room. Not necessary disappointed....more like meh of the experience.

Stunning architecture

By Lynn and Rich |

You will be reminded in full of the talent of the craftspeople who built this building and the artistic splendor that was put out by all. It is an amazing building and this history of it is fascinating. Get Kevin for your tour guide if possible, he was generous with his info and so enthusiastic.

Not a lot to see

By iver0185 |

To be honest, it is a neat building with a mcie history, but you don't get to see a lot. Worth going in for a peek, but that's about it.

Overwhelming

By Jota Gil |

Beautiful, outside and inside, full of dignity, knowledge and history. With free admitance, it's a MUST GO experience while visiting Washington

The Highlight of our 3-Day DC Visit

By CCV-en-Provence |

Almost 40 years after I had moved away from Washington, DC, I decided to return and do "all the usual tourist stuff" this impressive city has to offer. After visiting an exhaustive amount of museums, galleries, buildings, and institutions, we opted to tour the LoC. Boy, was that a good decision to save the best for last! Everything else pales in comparison to the wealth of beauty, wisdom, knowledge, culture, humility for knowledge, open-mindedness, and architecture this place embodies. Take your time and take a tour! And if you're lucky, you have Neal as your guide. His breadth of knowledge and his willingness to share it in a kind and well-digestible manner were stunning. -- Thank you for an amazing experience!

One of the most beautiful libraries

By Mariia K |

A very beautiful library indeed. From the exterior facade to the interior decoration.
Inside the heart of tourists, of course, they are not allowed, but you can still look at it. Albeit through the safety glass. It's still beautiful.
Apart from the main hall, there is much to see: everything is decorated with beautiful columns, paintings and even mosaics. In the left-hand section, a room that features several racks of different books, among which I found even the works of my compatriots, which was very entertaining. The right section has a small museum of exhibits.

Admission is free, but you need online registration, which can be completed in a couple of minutes.

*No drinking fountains were found, but there is a small counter on the first floor of the library where you can purchase water and snacks for a reasonable fee.
The toilets are clean, on the ground floor.

Amazing and awesome, must see!!

By ItchyFeet |

We visited almost every museum, the Capitol building, all the monuments, and the Library of Congress was definitely the highlight of our trip. We had no idea what to expect, and we were completely amazed and awestruck by the architecture inside the building. It’s the only place in this country where are you can see anything that closely resembles something you might see in Europe. The paintings on the ceilings and walls with the intricate detail were simply amazing. If you are there at 2 PM, you are able to go into the actual Library of Congress, but they keep the line moving at a quick pace, but you are allowed to take photos.

After you see the Capitol building you walk through the hall to the Library of Congress and I would definitely suggest that you take the time to do this!

A Hidden Gem

By Paul S |

What a lovely place. Not as much on the tourist trail as the wonderful mega Smithsonian establishments but absolutely up there in terms of an enjoyable and informative experience.
Wonderful photography exhibit on when we were there.
Shout out to the staff as well who were smiley and fun.

Amazing library with history

By jwillisbarrie2019 |

First time to visit the Library of Congress. Self guided tour - they have a good website - check it in advance. If you are wanting to see both Library of Congress and the Capitol follow the signs and you have to only clear security once to see both.
They have changing exhibits and option to take guided tour.

Absolutely stunning architecture

By Scarlett G |

Each and every detail in this building left me speechless. I would say that we were at the Library of Congress a good 2 hours just in awe with the architecture. If you ever find yourself in D.C and have an interest in architecture, I would highly recommend visiting this fascinating building.

Impressive

By Robbert L |

An amazing building. I did not expect such an astonishing building with all these extremely beautiul walls and ceilings. Impressive. So is the look you can have in the library itself ftom the balcony. From the wi dows you have great views over the Capitol.
There is an u derground connection between the Capitol and the Library.

Beautiful place, a lot to see

By Aurika |

We came to the library after the tour of the United States Capitol. Just scanned the code and got our passes. Our 8-year-old grandson got the brochure to do the Scavenger Hunt, which he enjoyed a lot

amazing

By Tori |

been a few times and its great each visit. incredible architecture and beautifully detailed exhibits

Saw some new things

By Traveller |

I visited the Library of Congress in August 2024. I have been here several times before. The architecture and art work are fantastic. I went up to look at and view the Reading Room. Next I went to see Thomas Jefferson’s library which I had never seen before. There was a special exhibit called Treasures from the Library of Congress which was very interesting. There was a display of the items that President Abraham Lincoln had with him when he was assassinated and many other interesting things. The Library of Congress has a book and gift shop. I always enjoy visiting the Library of Congress.

It's Not Just About Books

By Patrice A |

Of course, the library's significance is important. But the building itself, how it was constructed, and the various details in the artwork tell a story about the mindset of the times. Jefferson's library is a must see, as is a walk through the actual gallery.

Why have we not done this before? It's gorgeous

By Elizabeth J |

We had time for one tourist attraction during our recent trip to DC and had never been here before so decided on it. I knew the reading room was beautiful, but I wasn't expecting such impressive architecture throughout. The displays were impressive--Gettysburg address and other Lincoln items, a Gutenberg bible, etc. There was a family festival going on with Appalachian music which made it a little sensory overload at times but it was good to see the local families enjoying the space. You need a timed entry but it's super easy to do. Afterward, it was interesting to take the tunnel to the Capitol Visitor's Center. Highly, highly recommend.

Extraordinary

By Kmusikgal |

Met our expectations and then some. The architecture is larger than life. The reminder of the history was overwhelming.

Do Not Miss This National Treasure

By travelwithkidsut |

I scheduled my White House tour months in advance and am embarrassed to say that I didn’t request to add this building until a few days before our trip. I am so thankful that I did. It was a definite highlight! In fact, we decided to go back to go through the exhibits on our own a few days later. The guide on our scheduled tour was fantastic. She said several times that she just likes to breathe the air in the LOC and I couldn’t agree more. If I lived in the area, I would definitely frequent this beautiful building. If not to learn or see something new, simply to sit and soak in the beauty. What a national treasure!

Amazing architecture. And the old documents and Jefferson's private library awesome

By Ty K |

Loved seeing it. Particularly like the map section and Jefferson's private library. We were able to see the main part fo the library but would have been neat to go inside.

Wow!

By mermaidkatie |

Incredibly beautiful, floor to ceiling! Don't miss it! The mosaic of Minerva is unbelievable. Pretty Christmas Tree up in the Great Hall.

Make this a Mandatory Visit!

By APrettyLittlePark |

Don't miss this place. It beats most of the other gorgeous buildings. Take a tour or just wander around, either way your time will be well spent. Amazing place.

The Library of Congress is a national treasure

By Ellen B |

Visiting the LOC was a long awaited dream for this library nerd. The LOC has 3 main buildings so accessing the right bldg for our assigned entry time was a bit confusing. Reservations for timed entry are required. The architecture in the Jefferson Bldg is stunning & the exhibits were very interesting (Gutenberg Bible, Gershwin, Photos, Jefferson's library). Visitors can look down into the Main Reading Room but need a library card to enter & use it. If I only lived closer....! I was able to visit the Veterans History Project & thank Mrs. Donna Borden for her enthusiasm & expertise.

Order Timed Ticket in Advance; Visit towards sunset; Free Coat Check

By SayCheese |

• I have traveled a lot, and this was one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. Stunning, breathtaking, beyond gorgeous.
• MUST SIGN UP FOR TICKET. While it's free to visit, must have a timed ticket. The last ticket entrance is 4 pm. 3:15 was the last tour. Went on Thurs and closed early (5:30 instead of 8) because Congress was returning to D.C. to start their new session the next day and be sworn in. You need to establish an account first to register for a timed ticket. We were able to get the same day, but there were only 4 tickets available! NO walk-ins. Don’t forget to go to your email to finish the process.
• HOW TO VISIT -- Pressed for time, the info desk said to take elevator to Floor 2 to overlook the main reading room hall, then to Thomas Jefferson’s library, then the treasurer's gallery, then 1st floor to see the bible.
• TIME – visit a few hours before sunset as light shines in the windows.
• COAT CHECK – Free; they will NOT take tips
• PHOTOS – can take throughout except a few things. Don’t forget to shoot the ceilings and the tiled floors – both beautiful. You can take some nice photos of the Capitol Building from the 2nd floor windows.
• AFTER – Walk across the street to the Congressional Building and take photos on the steps.
• Absolutely breathtaking! Recommend going in the afternoon a couple of hours before sunset as the sun will be low and light those beautiful ceilings and walls. I’ve traveled quite a bit and it actually took my breath away.

• We had two brides having their photos taken.

Stunning building

By kiki_164 |

Best tourist attraction in my opinion to visit in Washington DC. Building is absolutely stunning inside and exhibitions were really interesting. At the time I visited, I needed to book a time slot online for when I could visit so make sure to check whether this is still applicable (no charges for admission).

I washington DCA often missed gem

By randsduxbury |

I first visited this building while doing my Masters degree while in the Navy as a LT. That was in 1966 and it was (still is) a beautiful building mostly unknown to many visitors. Please put this on your visit list.

Breath Taking

By Jessica G |

The most beautiful building. My, personal, favorite from our trip. Make sure to pre-register for a library card. Talk to the staff about the library. I loved learning from them.

Impressive

By James Y |

Amazing building, exhibits, and collections. Hard to really describe as it was somewhat overwhelming.

Very Cool

By Waunderlust |

Although you can only see from above, and through glass, I still think this is a pretty cool thing to pop in and see. Loved it!

Lovely Visit!

By LQ4L |

Enjoyed visiting the Library of Congress. Currently, you need to get a timed entry pass online (free) prior to visiting. However, if you have a Library of Congress- issued researcher pass, then you do not need a timed entry pass. There are exhibits to see on several floors, and a gift shop. The docents are very knowledgeable and I enjoyed listening to them.

Historic and Gorgeous!

By LQ4L |

This is a beautiful, historic building. I was able to use the Main Reading Room and do my research. There are several areas to visit at the LOC to view exhibits, including the gift shop. This is a must see. Highly recommend.

Reservations Needed and Worth it!!

By jill2bz |

I’ve never been here before and didn’t look up anything beforehand. Absolutely loved it!! Marble, paintings, the history. Everything was amazing. Elevators are available. Questions? Many docents are around to ask them.
Biggest thing everyone needs to remember is to make reservations!!! This includes almost everything that you want to do in DC

Stunning architecture

By Márcia C |

The Library of Congress is a place less known than it should be. The experience of the visit is intense. The imposition of the building, from ceiling to floor, the finishing details, is an entire work of art. A well-organized visit, volunteers spread out to serve the public in English, and there is a glazed place on top, from where you can admire and photograph the Library. The photos are beautiful, but say much less than the live experience. No cost to visit. Many marble stairs, but there are elevators, the place is inclusive. Don't stop going.

Colorful whole

By AM1308 |

Just a very beautiful building. Colorful, romantic. You can feast your eyes on all the details. Jefferson collection is impressively presented. Be sure to go all the way up the stairs to look at the workplaces from above. Impressive sight.

Beautiful

By jane a |

Well worth a visit, didn’t have much time unfortunately. There is a tunnel from the Capitol Building.
Lots to see.

Nice visit

By Enrique G |

The library is a really beautiful place that has a lot of history in its walls and collections. It is a great way of getting to know a little about american culture.

Majestic

By Vesponauta |

A library worthy of the United States Congress. Majestic building, profusely decorated with frescoes, containing millions of volumes, photographs and maps.
There is also the Gutenberg Bible, the first book printed on a large scale in 1454.
The visit is free, and tickets must be obtained in advance online.

Fascinating place!

By moodblu |

We went to the Library of Congress on our US History Tour. We entered through an underground passage from the Capitol. I would have like to have seen the main reading room of the Library of Congress better. We had to view from a mezzanine through a glass barrier that was set back quite a ways from the marble railing. One lady in our group could see pretty much nothing looking down as she was very short. I was intrigued with the detailed décor and the quotes about books and learning throughout the building. I was amazed to see an original Gutenberg Bible there—the first great book printed using moveable metal type in a mechanical process. This was a milestone turning point in bookmaking. I could have happily spent more time in the building if our tour schedule had allowed. We were able to see the amazing Thomas Jefferson Collection and hear the history of how he’d helped rebuild the Library’s books back up after the burning by the British in the War of 1812. We also had some time in the exhibit galleries adjacent to the Jefferson Collection. I recommend this building for anyone interested in books and research, or looking to see some very nice artistic architecture.

Impressive, Always

By Kittygal 🇺🇦 🌻 |

I stop by on each visit and continue to be impressed by the beauty of this building and its collections.

Timed entry slots are still required, but getting there via the underground tunnel from the capitol visitor's center is quite easy.

Even the elevators are spectacular!

An eye opening building

By Anthony C |

This is a breath taking building and it is a library, the colours and gold leaf are breath taking and built so long ago, if you go i would advise you to wait around for the free guided tour it is well worth the wait as they tell you the history of the library, the statues and carvings

Family vacation

By Lesley D |

Great experience and well worth a visit
Free entry but book a timed entry online
We used there online information guide which was really good and informative

Quick, interesting hit

By tinacaro |

Took my 9yo. She enjoyed the trip. She thought Jefferson’s library was very cool.

We had timed tickets but arrived 30 minutes early and were allowed in.

Gave my kid a scavenger hunt to do while looking around, which she loved.

Hidden secret of our constitutional party Goverment history

By JP G |

Not only is this place a place to absorb history, you can even look up history on old and new government insider information and find out what they are really doing with Government Bill number in congress. You can actually be enlighten with Government knowledge with research. It’s must see tourist stop with seeing Capitol Hill as well.

Not Just for Bibliophiles

By Fred R |

I admit that we visited the Library of Congress as a bit of an 'add-on' after visiting the actual Capitol building itself. However I was very much surprised in a good way.

The architecture of the building is just lovely. Whereas the Capitol is fairly austere neoclassicism with modest decoration, the Library of Congress has a much richer (even more fun) internal architecture. Very much a temple of books, but a temple worth visiting for its own sake.

At the time we visited there was a very interesting exhibition of a selection of the photographic collection of the library.

Bibliophiles will love it - as will everyone else

By Stefan G |

Very cool - another great free thing to do in DC. Beautiful architecture and art awaits within. Jefferson's book collection is on display (was when I visited, anyway). Reserve timed tickets in advance online (required, currently). Toilets, water fountains, and gift shop inside. About an hour will do to see everything.

capital hill/library of congress

By Steven Harvey |

This tour was really a blast for me. I couldn't had a better more knowledgeable tour guide in Laura. Just great!!!!!!

Don't Miss in DC

By Kate S |

The Library of Congress areas that you actually get to see as a tourist reminded me greatly of Rome with its frescos, mosaic floors, paintings, etc. It is very elaborate. You only get to actually see the library from a windowed room above it, but it looks like an amazing place to study! Throughout the time we were there, we also got to see some exhibits on photographs and Thomas Jefferson's private library. You will need timed entry tickets, but they are free.

Good

By Skycat97 |

The audio tour did not work for us. Not sure if the wifi service was the problem but after multiple attempts, we gave up. That was disappointing. It was very crowded but gorgeous. Such a thrill to see the main hall and the reading room.

Enchanting

By Roses |

Absolutely beautiful place with a sophisticated library and incredible study room. The architecture both inside and outside this area is just gorgeous.

Glorious

By Alireza123 |

We as a group of friends visited the library . It is a must see of dc.
Largest library in the world. Fantastic building.lots of things to learn.
It takes less than two hours.
Always there is a queue for entrance which takes 40 min. You should took free ticket online in advance.

Beautiful.

By Manuel P |

Very nice visit. The architecture of the place is beautiful. Possibility to see the Gutenberg Bible. Be careful, you must book your visit via their website but it is free. A tunnel exists between the Capitol and the library (allowing security only once for both visits). To do without hesitation.

A Temple of Knowlege

By Jemille Williams |

I love this building! It's so gorgeous!
I'm researching my family for a book, so there is always so much for anyone to find out more about their family.

This may be my favorite building in DC

By kathymY1120SY |

Didn't make it here on my first visit to DC, but did on this trip. I'm so glad I did. I LOVE this building. It's designed by Thomas Jefferson and it's absolutely gorgeous! The architecture and attention to detail are fantastic. Everywhere you look in this building is beautiful. Very well laid out, easy to tour and the best place to get a great photo of the Capitol building to the west (from the 3rd floor northwest window). It's a beautiful building, you don't want to miss this one! While you're there, sign up for a Library card, makes a great souvenir!

A MUST SEE

By Chefcolli |

This is a great place to see for the fantastic building details and all the history. I reccomend that you spend a least 2 hours there.

You have no idea how amazing this place is!

By ctimms125 |

I loved being here! I even got my library card! This building is beyond beautiful! There is so much here. This is art and history and information and the staff here is amazing.

Left me Speechless! The Architecture was surreal!

By Rob Caputo |

I was blown away by how beautiful this location was!! It was like I was transported into the center of Rome but never left the US! The Architecture and attention to detail left me speechless! It was a moving experience and should be experienced by everyone who lives in this country! I highly recommend visiting the Capitol Building first and then taking the tunnel over to the Library. 📚 What a great way to spend your time in Washington DC. My Youtube video does it's best to share the beauty!!

Fantastic Experience!! Do the Pre-Registration.

By Jake |

I had a work trip to DC and I flew in a few days early to see some things, and this was recommended by a Navy friend of mine. He suggested I pre-register to get a reader card to go into the reading room. This was the best suggestion! I just walked to registration, gave them my name and they printed off a card for me and I walked right in. Other people waited in line. I found it so fascinating to be in this library which consisted of many of Thomas Jefferson’s books. I learned that a lot of books were lost when the White House was burned down in during the war of 1812 and a lot of these books were surviving books. I just walked around and took it all in. I am a huge history nerd so I just loved it. There was a lot of people studying there too. The ceiling in there was beautiful and so were the walls. I definitely would love to go back some day.

Make sure to allow adequate time!

By TXMARTINS |

Somehow this didn’t make it on our list but we came upon it & I so wish we had more time to explore. Stunningly gorgeous inside, rich with history.

Excellent

By Simon C |

Perhaps a little off the beaten track, and possibly because, like most of Washington, its only emerging from post Covid hibernation, there are very few visitors to admire its architecture and history. It’s a relatively short visit, but interesting.

Beautiful!

By noworry |

Truly one of the most beautiful and interesting buildings in DC. Even if you just walk around on your own it is worth the visit.
Lucked out and just happened to be able to join a tour moments before it started. Can't imagine this would happen the majority of time --tickets!! Hank, I think, was the docent and had a wealth of interesting info.
Would put it at the top of the list of places to visit in DC.

An Architectural Masterpiece

By sloomis31 |

The Library of Congress is like no other building I've been in either in the US or abroad. The colors in the ceiling, the statues, the mosaics and even the floor are elegantly dedicated to learning. The map exhibit on the ground floor was a fascinating look at how our country developed geographically. There is also the Guttenburg Bible, and the chance to peer through a window to see the Reading Room. TIP - Make sure you go upstairs to see it from the gallery, the view is so much more impressive. Then there was the chance to see how it all started, part of Thomas Jefferson's original library which he sold to the government to form the Library of Congress. I loved how the guide pointed out how to tell which were actually Jefferson's and which the library had reconstructed. Lastly, there was the expansive shop where a librarian or history buff could pick up a quick keepsake. The only thing I wish we could have done is actually enter the Reading Room. That was a bit disappointing. If you want to go, visit their website and get a timed entry pass like we did. They are free and reserve you an entry window. Feel free to follow me for more fun reviews.

Surprisingly interesting and worthwhile visit

By Alan304 |

The building itself is worth a visit. The interior is a brilliant 19th Century tribute to knowledge and learning.

The audio tour takes you through many highlights including the Gutenberg Bible and Thomas Jefferson’s library.

Entry tickets are available online and are free.

If you love books you must go!

By Melissa G |

This was a really good experience visiting the largest library in the world! Seeing Thomas Jefferson’s books and the Gutenberg Bible was awesome. The staff were really nice telling stories and answering questions. It is a beautiful building.

Library of Congress

By Carrie R |

Building and books are beautiful. Cool film on the way to Thomas Jefferson’s Library. There is also an eye spy for your kids.

Something for everyone

By thankfulforhelp |

The LOC is a gem. If you have time, check out one of the many free events, whether they're concerts or lectures. Gloria Gaynor even performed there for a 70s disco event! And sign up to get a library card!

First time visitors

By curiouspalate |

Imposing and majestic edifice with informative and very helpful staff. The
Library of Congress is a national treasure.

Gorgeous! A must see!

By Sara G |

This building is gorgeous inside! A definite must stop when visiting DC! You can join a guided tour for free for more information.

Big government building is a gem inside

By Brian S |

Inside this official looking building adjacent to Capital and Supreme Court is a beautiful (ornate, elegant, breathtaking) interior. Often there are displays of historical or artistic works from the collection. You can go to a gallery to look down on scholars (in another gorgeous chamber) who are busily doing their work in the archives. Not a lengthy visit, but very well worth it.

Absolutely Beautiful!

By RachelB |

Library of Congress is definitely worth checking out. The building is absolutely beautiful. We also really enjoyed looking through the Thomas Jefferson Book Collection.

Library put me in Awwe.

By Maryann W. |

Beautiful historical building. I don't know why I thought there would be a huge amount of books there. There wasn't.

not to be missed

By FernandoEsposito |

Impressive building, although we did not take the guided tour, there were many people from the library willing to answer all kinds of questions.

Friday Morning Tour

By Schyler C |

This tour was much more than my partner and I had expected! You do need to schedule a timeslot online to enter, but the tour is self guided and free. You can enter the research library which is still active and the architecture is amazing. They also have Thomas Jeffersons Personal Library which is very cool!

Beautiful building

By Mees U |

Very nice building and well worth visiting. It is very much decorated as a museum, but the history that can also be read everywhere is beautiful. In addition, the building itself and the architectural style are phenomenal to see, especially the ceilings are great.

Fun place to stop at before the capitol

By Shayla |

We went here in January, so it was pretty cold out and there weren't a ton of people. The exhibits were great and we really enjoyed the Women's Suffrage exhibit. You can't actually go into the library portion but you can view it from the top. It's a free stop and the best place to start your day in DC. There's a tunnel connecting the Library of Congress to the Capitol building, which will save you time since you won't need to go through security a second time. With the colder weather, it was really nice to do this. We spent about about an hour and a half here, skipping only one main exhibit.

Don’t miss the Library of Congress while in DC.

By Keith T |

Stunningly beautiful Jefferson Building (Only one open to the public.)
Need online entry time appointment.
Self guide tour only. Plan to spend 60-90 minutes.
To go inside of the main reading room, you need a valid LOC library card which you can apply while onsite and is free. Inquire at the library. An application online is needed to proceed and you need to be personally present for the photograph. If it’s not a busy day, you can have the card in hand within an hour.

A bit of a letdown

By Jeff P |

This was one of my favorite DC stops when I visited as a kid. As a parent, I was disappointed. The reading room is open only a couple of hours here and there. We couldn't go in. Without that, it really wasn't worth going. There are some interesting nuggets here and there (children's reading room, George and Ira Gershwin exhibit), but with all the other amazing things to do in DC, we could have found a better way to spend this hour.

We only saw it from above, a shame

By Giorgio-7046 |

Although it is beautiful, it has a spectacular central room but we could not enter the main room and could only be seen from the upstairs through glass.

A Must!

By Dean_Amy-2004 |

After all the trips to DC, this was the first time we made it to the LOC; we have been missing out. Even with the current Covid restrictions, it is an amazing place and so much to explore on your own. The Rosa Parks exhibit was interesting; the Gutenberg Bible is a must see. All volunteers we spoke with were friendly and knowledgeable. The actual floor area is only accessible by appointment now, but you can go to the observation area and get a great view of the research area…the “National Treasure” shot.
Be sure to get your tickets in advance; timed entry is the only way to access the building.

An easy place to skip over but shouldn’t

By brittany z z |

I think it’s easy for tourists to skip over the library of congress. Even just go to take pictures inside of the great architecture and the use the tunnel to go over to the Capitol for a tour. For locals, they have great exhibits inside. Right now they have a grand one on women’s long fight to get the right to vote for the 100ty anniversary. They also have a Rosa Parks exhibit. The other exhibits were smaller and did not absorb as much of my time. I went on a Sunday in March. There was a little bit of a line to get in but I came in right after a big tour group.

Neat place and it doesn’t take long

By Princerman |

Interesting place to check out. They let you into the reading room for a few minutes. I don’t recommend this place for families with small kids due to it being a quiet place.

World's largest library and very beautiful

I was so glad to visit this on our reccent trip to DC because I did not have a chance to visit on my previous DC trip. This is the world's largest library (it does not have every single book in the world, but it does have bunches of books and also has a lot of recording too I am told). Anyone 16 years or older can get a library card and check out a book. The building itself inside and out is just spectacular and gorgeous. The library is actually several buildings but the main library is in the Jefferson Building and that's where you want to visit unless you're going to do research. Right now they are requiring timed entry passes which you can get online for free. The only time I could get was 10:45am (opening time) on Tuesday, and we had a Capitol tour scheduled an hour later. It was a short walk from there to the Capitol so we figured we had about 45 minutes for our visit and that turned out to be enough. The big items we saw were the Guttenburg Bible and Thomas Jefferson's Library (which he donated to Congress to begin the library). Not all of Jefferson's Library was viewable as some books were not there due to them digitizing the entire library. The view of the great reading room is just breathtaking. While you can definitely spend more than an hour here, if you are pressed for time, you can get it done in less than an hour for sure.

The highlight

By Lorenzo P68 |

From the outside it appears to be a rather austere and anonymous building but as soon as you enter a scenario opens up that (as far as I'm concerned) you don't expect to find in this city: the first room is striking (with marble staircases and a richly decorated ceiling) but obviously the highlight is the Library (inside which access is permitted for just over a minute, obviously in religious silence) but there are also other exhibition rooms with photographic exhibitions. Since it is located in front of the Visitor Center of the Capitol, we did the double in the same morning (calculate 1 hour of visit here) with an appointment at 10am and one at 12pm.

Beautiful & they have a Gutenberg Bible!

By 1Venus |

This was a great attraction. At the time of my visit they were doing timed entry by advance tickets. However, the entry was actually a "free-for-all" mess. It didn't seem to matter the time on your ticket. People in front of me had tickets for later times and the people behind me were supposed to be there an hour earlier. We waited outside in the cold for over an hour to get inside. But, the inside was great! You do your own self guided tour, but there were some employees there to answer questions along the way. My favorite thing was looking down on the library, seeing the books owned ty Thomas Jefferson, and seeing one of the 4 remaining Gutenberg Bibles. I saw another one of these bibles in Germany and waited in a very long line to do so. Here, there was no wait. People just walked right past it on their way to the bathrooms without noticing it was on display. If you go, don't miss it!

Interesting Facts and Exhibits about a Beautiful Building

By MinnesotaIgel |

Even if you're not a frequent library patron, this building was beautiful, interesting, and worth a visit. I highly recommend the self audio tour on your phone or take one of the other tours, if the library is open. You'll miss out on lots of interesting details about what you see if you don't listen to the tour. Otherwise it's just a beautiful building. They have special exhibits, room size and smaller displays. We saw one on The Great Gatsby which was great to learn about as well as Two Georges about King George III and George Washington. Made you think and ponder.

Fantastic Visit

By Traveller |

I visited the Library of Congress in August 2021. I had also visited in August 2017 but I saw more this time. I obtained my timed-entry ticket online. The architecture of the building is fantastic with the Neptune Fountain in front. The location of the Library of Congress near the US Capitol and Supreme Court makes for a lot of photo opportunities. I passed through strict security. I followed the "Quick Look" self-guided tour on the Library of Congress website. The first thing I looked at was the Guttenberg Bible which was very interesting to look at. This was located on the second floor. On the third floor, I took a look at the Reading Room. On the steps up to the viewing area for the Reading Room is a painting of Minerva. The ceiling is unbelievable. Back down on the second floor on the floor is a sun dial surrounded by the signs of the zodiac. These were the key things mentioned in the "Quick Look" self-guided tour. On the second floor were several exhibits which I did not have time to visit. Hopefully I will visit them my next time in the Library of Congress. The Library of Congress has a very nice gift and book shop.

Understated history and beauty, engaged us all

By Samantha M |

This was actually my favorite of all the landmarks and historical buildings we visited in DC. The mosaics and quotes about wisdom were breathtaking. The “I Spy” activity given to kids upon entering engaged my 6- and 9-year-old (as well as me, to be honest!). The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, explaining the Latin, etc. My husband spent most of the time waiting in line for a reader’s card, so he could access the stacks. He is so proud to have it, even though we’ll return to California and likely not use it. It’s a fun souvenir! We’re so blessed to be able to celebrate wisdom and learning!

Mixed Bag

By pes7 |

A little underwhelmed by this attraction. The Gutenberg Bible was a highlight as were some old maps that piqued my interest. However, the reading room was inaccessible and the other attractions weren't really to my taste. Will not be returning.

Worth Visiting

By Monjeme |

This is certainly worth 90 minutes of your time - extremely unique, beautiful, and historical building; our family of four thoroughly enjoyed it. Note: despite having a time stamped entry, you'll still make a long line, since visitors' entry times are note monitored.

Wow, just gorgous!

By TravelisMe |

It is hard to describe how beautiful this place is. It's stunning. Such detail in the craftsmanship of the interior and the grandness of the place. Highly recommend a visit.

Fascinating place

By 09robbins |

You have to book a free entry ticket in advance. The inside of the building was stunning and really interesting.

Beautiful building

By lbyrne99 |

Beautiful building. Give plenty of time for security. Tour cancelled last minute as certain sections closed without prior knowledge to your guide .

Stunning Architecture

By WendyhJones |

This building is stunning inside and I mean truly stunning. I did a tour and was pleasantly surprised by how detailed and informative it was. Although busy the tour was not hurried and gave plenty of time for me to look around. Highlights for me were the Gutenberg Bible and the Jefferson Collection. I also took out a readers card which, as an author, pleased me greatly. I would say it’s a must visit if you are in Washington.

Beautiful

By BF826 |

Washington DC truly have some of the most amazing buildings.
You must reserve your free time slot and visit. You will not regret walking around and soaking up how beautiful the architecture is. The building is truly stunning. Words and pictures don’t do enough, you need to see it with your own eyes.

mad trash

The book selection was very disappointing, and the books that were present were quite dry and boring.

Never seen anything prettier

By embeyfar |

I don't think I've ever been in a fancier building. It seems like every inch is a piece of art. Of the 4 times I've been to DC, I've never been here, but it's worth it to see the beauty of this buidling.

Great Surprise

By labs_home |

We did not have the Library of Congress in our plans originally, but are very glad we added it to the time on Capital Hill. Maybe the most beautiful interior in the city. And to see Thomas Jefferson's library! Wow!

What A Pleasant Surprise

By rfreeman2015 |

I traveled to DC after Christmas to visit several places I had not been to on my many trips to that city. One of the buildings on my list was the Library of Congress.

I was impressed by its substance and its beauty. It turned out to be the highlight of my trip. It's as much a museum as a library. I took the tour, and the docent, Norm, was excellent. He mentioned he had been a teacher, and his talent in that area was evident.

The Library of Congress doesn't seem to attract the notoriety of the White House, Washington Monument and several of the museums. But it's definitely worth a spot on your DC itinerary.

Tour guide not always needed

By Shana M |

This was not a great tour, but definitely handy for getting in and seeing many of the spots you might skip over. Because this was a combo tour, we didn't spend much time on any one thing...but that was ok too. I think I would recommend either starting earlier in the day or just doing one place at a time.

A true national treasure

By JayZee |

An authentic national treasure, the Library of Congress is a feast for the eyes. Every space is visually stunning! Among the highlights is the Jefferson library.

OUTSTANDING!

By GOUTESGO |

Excellent in ALL regards for any/all who have a working "brain" beyond little "screens!" (IF "well-modeled" by ENGANGED & INTERESTED accompanying parents/guardians/other adults), GREAT for upper-Grades elementary & on up!

Go there for the architecture (not the books)

By LAURIE S |

Beautiful architecture with so many themed areas on the walls/ceilings. The books we saw were from Thomas Jefferson’s collection and the big reading room. The special exhibit on the two George’s was the most special. Please note free timed entry tickets needed with physical security checks done upon entry/exit. Pleasantly surprised!!

Very pretty

By Molly |

We visited the Library of Congress on 05/11. It was really pretty, as was to be expected, but there were also a lot of exhibits inside.

In particular, we enjoyed the Rosa Parks and photography exhibits, so would recommend those most. Definitely has more than meets the eye - but make sure to book a timed slot as we were unaware of this and just got lucky.

Beautiful

By lucia m |

Beautiful building both externally and especially internally. It praises culture in all its forms, remembering poets, philosophers, historical scientists... The interiors are frescoed with sculptures, the library is beautiful and can of course be visited in absolute silence.
You have to book the entrance ticket online and it is free.

An amazing building

By Reuben J |

Absolutely stunning building, amazing. This has to be at the top of every visitors must see list. Nothing more needs to be said, go and see for yourself.

The Most Beautiful Building

By Dianne G |

In all the things we saw, this building was the most beautiful! Be careful as you walk because you are going to want to keep looking up at the art on the ceilings and the decorative columns. We took 20 minutes and got our Library of Congress Card. The best Library Card Available.

Amazing

By Shaden A |

A unique place. If you are visiting D.C then it is a must see attraction. The level of security is high. You'll get the chance to navigate the history of America and enjoy the old world maps, and history.

Breathtaking

By Bcrots88 |

Buildings are simply not made like this anymore. It is unbelievably gorgeous. The Gutenberg bible is here and that was really neat to see. I could have stayed for hours just to look at the architecture! Also, there is a tunnel that attaches to the Capitol building, if you plan to do both, its helpful because you dont have to go through security twice!

Beautiful building and history

By CristinaAriadna |

This has so much history and the architecture is amazing! Worth a look, even if it's a quick one. A photographer's heaven I'd say. If you go to the Capitol this is included in the visit.

Library of Congress

By Hendovol5 |

Beautiful building worth seeing! Just spent about an hour there just wandering around the special exhibits.

In an architecture a masterpiece of the late nineteenth century, the most important cultural institution in the United States

By ponan68 |

The Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., is the national library of the United States and is one of the largest libraries in the world. Founded in 1800, it serves primarily as a resource for members of the United States Congress, but is also open to the public. The library contains millions of books, recordings, photographs, maps and manuscripts in a wide range of languages and topics.

Beautiful mosaics

By Deanne D |

You can access the library from an underground tunnel connected to the Capitol building. This will mean you avoid a walk In the snow or rain. The library is lavishly decorated with beautiful mosaic floors and stunning ceilings covered in paintings. The reading room Itself is highly decorated and a quiet haven for reading. There are very interesting exhibitions on to see. Worth a visit.

Beautiful Library

By Aurora |

We visited the Library of Congress at the end of August. The library itself was absolutely beautiful, the main reading room was iconic, and the exhibitions were very well done. This is a must-see in Washington DC. The only negative for this place is some of the staff seem to treat visible minorities visitors quite differently than white visitors and not in a good way (i.e. staff helpful and attentive to white visitors but neglecting or condescending to visible minorities visitors). Wish they can improve on this to make the visit enjoyable for all.

A MUST VISIT! Most beautiful building in DC!

By 690CT |

The absolute BEST docents are at LOC! We've had the pleasure of learning from Mr. Rod on several recent visits and this time Mr. Norm! We've brought 3 out of town guests, including our 9 yr old granddaughter, and all thoroughly enjoyed the building and exhibits. A must see for all!

Highlight of DC

By Leonhkny |

This should be added to any visit to Washington DC. With the largest collection of books in the world, the Library of Congress impresses both readers and visitors. Decor is ornate and opulent in every sense. The Great Hall is particularly photogenic. As the de facto national temple of literature, it is a real gem.

Barely made it to this one

By Susan B |

Everything seems to close too early so we barely made it to the Library of Congress and couldn't see as much as last time. But it is definitely one to see.

gorgeous and enjoyed by all ages

By ncdel |

I don't recall visiting the LoC on DC visits as a kid but put it on the list when we took our 12 yr olds and so glad we did! We all really enjoyed this more than expected- it's unbelievably gorgeous, but the exhibits were super interesting as well. I think we were all a little awestruck looking at Jefferson's actual book collection.
One thing I wish there was more info on there was the artwork and design of everything, I ended up trying to google some things but some sort of self guided tour related to that would have been great (unless I missed it).

Wonderful Tour!

By Marion V |

Our tour guide was so friendly and knowledgeable! She made the tour so interesting! One of the highlights was seeing the special exhibit of Thomas Jefferson’s library

Overlooked National Treasure

By carlamck1961 |

We have been to DC many times over many years. Nowadays we are looking for things we haven't done. Library of Congress was one of those things.

Architecturally this is one of the most beautiful buildings I have been in. The mosaics, the frescos, the stained glass - amazing. The main reading room brings back memories of movies like National Treasure in which the room had a role. The exhibits are well done. I suspect that the Ark of the Covenant is either here or at the Smithsonian.

The LOC is America's Library so with a quick form and picture ID you can get your own Library card. We will be returning to this beautiful building next time we visit DC.

Not sure I've ever been inside such a fancy and nice building, and I've been in tons.

By eja117 |

We did need a timed entry but it was really easy to get one. There sure as heck was no line on Wednesday afternoon in late February. Loved several of the exhibits. Was one of my wife's favorite buildings she saw.

Meh

By ANR_78 |

The percentage of the area that John Q Public gets to see amounts to very little of the overall building space. The architecture of the part you can view was impressive but everything else was just meh. It's a library and I don't feel like I would ever just choose to go see a library in any other city on any other vacation. Basically, it was on our list so we went through the security line to be disappointed in the overall experience. I wouldn't go back.

Beautiful building - simply stunning interior. Beautiful concept!

By grey_flattop |

Imagine a time when members of Congress would use the considerable resources that the Library of Congress holds! A quest for research and learning driven by combing the collective works of our culture. Sadly twitter and cable TV informs many of our most outspoken "leaders" today and that's a damn shame.

Beautiful!

By Madeleine L |

Many people miss the Library of Congress when they visit DC. Don’t miss it! The building is truly beautiful and the exhibits are interesting.

Treasure of the Capitol district

By allthegirls2014 |

Be sure to arrange for a docented tour (for free). It will make the experience much better. I would not have known what I was looking at and all of the details of the art, architecture and particularly the significance of the Jefferson collection.

And these are the best views of the Capitol in the whole District!

Less than anticipated experience

By neosmusic |

If visiting from out of town and just wanting to see the building, it's less than stellar. The interior is beautiful for sure, but when walking through the library, there isn't much to see as a tourist beyond an area for George Gershwin and Thomas Jefferson's private collection. I would not recommend visiting unless you have a library card and plan to actually go into the main portion of the building.

Fantastic - review includes tips and details

By Sherri |

I don't have to tell you that the architecture and art of the LoC is amazing and that it should definitely be on your don't miss list, especially since it is an easy 5-minute underground walk from the Capitol Visitor Center. And you probably already know that you need (at least in August 2024) timed entry passes to get in.

Here are some things you might not know.

1. If you aren't there in DC in peak tourist season (March/April), you can probably get a timed entry pass minutes before you arrive, or even when you show up. You can reserve a pass on your phone, or they even have a little set up at the checkpoint where you can reserve a pass on the spot. When I was leaving the LoC at about 2 pm on a weekday first week of August, I checked on my phone, and there were still about 200 passes available for every entry time for the rest of the day. And I felt like it was pretty packed inside.

2. They ARE offering guided tours again, at least in August 2024. When I showed up at about noon, they were offering tickets for a 3:15 tour.

3. While you can learn this on the website if you read carefully, I missed it, so I want to highlight that (as of writing) you CAN walk onto the main reading room floor without the need to register for a reading card. The hours are limited (currently Tuesday – Friday, 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 pm). Important to note: You cannot take in anything big enough to hold a book, which means basically any backpack or purse. They have an attended checkroom in the basement level which I found easy to use (and free). But they also have cubbies (unguarded, use at your own risk) as you walk in if you didn't check your bag.

When you go in, you walk down an aisle to the center, walk around in a defined circular path around the center kiosk, and then back out the same aisle you came in on. I was trying to get in right at 2, so what follows may not be your experience if you just walk up in the middle of the time. The line started building up 10 minutes before 2 pm. They took in a defined number of people at a time; they then held the line until all those people had exited. They say you get 5 minutes, but I think my group was in there less than 2 minutes (upside - the line moves incredibly quickly - I was in the second group and I was out of there by 2:05). As you walk in, they tell you to keep moving and not stop, but I just stepped out of the flow to the extreme side of the pathway to take pictures, and no one yelled at me. They send an employee at the end of the group to keep everyone moving, and I think I might have been able to stop for as long as I did because I was at the front of the group; as soon as the end of the line passed me and the staff member at the end got to me, she told me to get moving. Two minutes is enough time to get a sense of the amazing architecture, to see the areas you can't see from the observation balcony, and to get some pictures, but not enough time to soak it in. I'm not sure if the line dies down at the midpoint of the hour, and if it does, if they let you stay longer.

4. If you are like me and want to know the symbolism and things to notice of everything, there is a pretty exhaustive guide that you can access using the "Virtual Views" in the left side menu of the main "Visiting the Library" page; then click on "Thomas Jefferson Building". At that site there is a guide to the art and architecture in most of the main public spaces (as well as some spaces that are not open to the public - sad face). You can step through the rooms using the "previous/next" arrows at the top or the menu bar on the left. For many sections, there is a sub-level where you can step through individual scenes/figures; look for arrows under the picture associated with description. For example, under Great Hall, under each Putti section (there are four separate entries), you can click through each Putti in that section by clicking on the arrows of the picture of the first one. This will give you MUCH more info that a docent or tour.

Unexpectedly shocking

By Viajero_pajarero |

A truly magnificent and spectacular place. I was very positively surprised. The collection he has, moreover, is up to scratch. No longer just see Thomas Jefferson’s personal library, but many other treasures, such as one of the few remaining bibles Gutenberg printed, or listen to a copy of the disc that travels on the voyager probe containing greetings in dozens of languages. Undoubtedly, a must from Washington

A Bucket List Item

By cbprc |

Getting credentialed to use the main reading room in the Jefferson Building was a life-long goal. This was one of 2 reasons we chose Washinton this time.

Beautiful

By MrMrsHappyR |

Stunning huge building across from the Capitol Building. We managed to scan the barcode while on the Capitol Building tour. Well worth a visit. Has an impressive green dome on the top and an incredible library section. Also holds the famous Gutenberg Bible

Unexpected Surprise

By David W |

The Library of Congress was an unexpected surprise. The areas open to the public are stunning. Whereas the multitudes of books aren't visible, it was interesting learning from the volunteers how the LoC works and where everything is stored. And fortunately for us, we happened to be there on a day where the main reading room was open to the public. No lines, no quick in-and-out visits. We walked in, talked to some of the volunteers, and sat at one of the study tables and took in the grandeur and history of that room. (Logistically speaking, visiting the LoC is convenient to lump with the Capitol and Supreme Court.)

Every copywriter book!

By Scott |

Make a reservation. Get in line early. Go through security like the capital, then wonder on a self tour. Most importantly, get a free sticker to enter the rotunda of the library. So cool! A functioning library of the people. No cafe, but restrooms. It’s right across from the capital.

Beautiful Reading Room

By Elizabeth S |

So grateful I was able to snag two tickets to go. It is one of the most stunning works of architecture I have ever seen. Very knowledgeable docents throughout to answer questions.

A reading room I always wanted

By JKJaster |

Finally got to visit The Library of Congress this visit and I was just amazed. Standing on the balcony over-looking the reading room I was just blown away. i wanted to buy a house just so I could have a reading room like that put in.

Fabulous Interior

By Jagzzz |

We were able to walk up and visit, reserving immediate access tickets via the bar code at the entrance.

Beautiful interiors. Lovely helpful and informative volunteers.

We completed the online Readers Card application process the evening prior to visiting. On the day we attended a nearby building to present our passports and be photographed for our cards. We were then able to visit inside the main Readers room.

Truly impressed

By Bea |

A must visit. We have booked this tour in advance and it was free. We first went to visit the Capitol Hill and after visiting Capitol Hill you can easily reach the library through an underground passage.
The building of the library is truly spectacular. In the library you can see for example Thomas Jefferson’s books and the Gutenberg Bible. We were truly impressed.

Stunning Architecture

By Janet F |

The library is beautiful and very well done; however, I recommend not walking from the White House on a hot day. Take the subway.

TJ's Books

By stevehh2525 |

The Thomas Jefferson collection display is amazing -- the ones that survived the fire, the ones replaced through purchase or having it in the Library already or missing still. Overlooking the reading room is great. Really wish one could call up an item to view...

Breathtaking!

By trwigg |

We were here on the day they reopened and was thrilled at the opportunity to visit this site. One of the most beautiful buildings in DC.

Fascinating Architecture

By Jax Cracker |

Beautiful to walk through but the main floor is inaccessible to the average visitor. During covid times the tour is a little less attractive but at least they have a coat check room so that you don't have to carry backpacks and coats around during the tour. I enjoyed the special exhibit on the first floor. It changes from time to time.

Plan ahead to get the most

By RRMerlinman |

Jaw-dropping visuals around every corner. The main reading room is too magnificent to describe here. We've been everywhere in this country and this is the most incredible room we have seen.
We did LOC on a whim and realized with some advanced planning we could have had a much more complete experience. We will make this stop #1 when we come back.

Gorgeous building!

By SeeTheW0rld62 |

The best part of the National Archives for me was the stunning building. The architecture an decorations on the walls, ceiling and floor are gorgeous. The exhibit of Jefferson's books and the Guttenberg Bible are interesting.

Must see!

By Puk69 |

A must see when in DC! There is so much to look at and the guides were super knowledgeable and friendly. They were so helpful to our teenage children when they had questions. The architecture of the building is breathtaking.

A must to go see. Beautiful.

By Jerry K |

You have to go there. It is so beautiful and although we did not do it, you can apply for a library card and go to the main floor. Make sure you make a reservation. No entry if you just show up.

Stunning library

By Spencer |

Great way to get out of the heat. Smooth entry and amazing inside. Easy to book tickets from the UK. We spent a good couple of hours wandering around. Stunning inside

Impressive

By sgavoyages |

It is quite simply the largest bookstore in the world. Impressive to see. Self-guided and free visit but you must book online. There is also an underground passage to go to the Capitol. Don't miss the superb hall, the Gutenberg Bible exhibitions and the large consultation room.

Beautiful experience

By sasri |

Doing half an hour of queuing outdoors in a cold wind fortunately did not discourage us. Too bad only that the entrance to the main room was sold out and we could only admire it from above. The bible written by Gutemberg is also wonderful. Nice palace and beautiful exposures. It is definitely worth it!

The most impressive building in Washington!

By Raintree_Thailand |

The entire Library of Congress is incredibly impressive. The Main Hall is superbly ornate, but the entire building is adorned with art, mosaics, statues, and architecturally appealing craftmanship. An added treat was to see an authentic Gutenberg Bible from the mid-1400s... one of only 21 complete copies still in existence today.

Amazing beauty

By Joelle D |

Worth the visit.
See the paintings in the halls, the huge reading hall, and the temporary exhibitions as we did.
The Thomas Jefferson Building features exhibitions like the pictures exhibition "Not an ostrich" and installations that bring the Library's unparalleled collections to life.

Pleasantly surprised

By Daniel S |

This collection is unbelievable and the history is incredible. Most people say it is less than an hour and that’s only if you can’t read.

Amazing building

By Pia S |

This is just an awesome building, there is so much art here its impossible to see it all. I was impressed about how they could have every square inch covered with art and it still didn't seem to clash at all. If you have the time you can spend hours in there as I said every square inch are covered from floor to sealing. You can take pictures in there no flash. It may not be the best place for very small children but young teenagers will be fine. If you want to see the library you have to check and find a day where there is no research that are the only days you can go in there.

The Most Beautiful Building in Washington

By Robyn |

The Library of Congress is without a doubt the most beautiful building in Washington. You can take tours that cost a lot of money or you can take a FREE tour offered every hour with well trained Library docents. You can also do a self guided tour. Lots of info on line at LOC.GOV.

Impressive. And what a great stories told.

By Sander_Yoho |

Impressive building and what a history! Loved to see the Gutenberg bible.
The exhibitions of photography and the one about Rosa Parks were super. Really great done. Never visited an exhibitions before where I red all the text.

Extremely aggressive and impolite staff (impossible to do research)

By Tam |

I am a foreign researcher and I wanted to do some research at the Library of Congress. However, employees were so aggressive and impolite that I was forced to cancel my plan as communication was impossible. The staff (security guards, especially two women at the office where people have to leave their bags, and librarians) did not answer to my hellos, goodbyes and questions, looking at me annoyed (especially when hearing my foreign accent) and violently yelling directions at me. The most aggressive person was a man wearing a mask at the registration card office who yelled at me directions, looking at me with a threatening look as if he was about to hit me. Due to this awful climate, I only stayed two hours as it was impossible to do research. When I asked a young lady at the security office if I could retrieve the bag I had to leave there before, she looked at me in a nasty way as if I was disturbing her as she was doing her nails. She put my bag on the desk not even looking at me. If you are a researcher looking for a particular document the experience will be extremely painful and unproductive. I am shocked that the chief of staff of the Library of Congress and its directors authorize such deplorable behaviors of their staff.

a must see

By 9000Gent |

Not only the building is impressive, also the collection is.
A must see in DC. The reading hall is not accessible (only for members)

Amazing interior

By Acineto |

I noticed a tunnel from the US Capitol to the Library of Congress and decided to go over to take a look. You need to pre-book a free timed ticket to the library and there was a QR code at the entrance so I was able to get a ticket before walking down the corridor. It was easier to get in since it wasn't as busy as the main entrance. There was no security check to get to the Library but there was one heading into the US Capitol.
The initial step into the hall was breathtaking. The vibrant colours and the carved stairwell was very beautiful. The roof paintings on the first and top floors were also quite nice. The top floor also had a gallery and Thomas Jefferson's Library. There is also a set of stairs which lead to a balcony in the main library.
As I was leaving, I noticed there was a stall in the great hall where there was someone distributing the tickets for the main library. It is a free tour of the library and I was lucky enough to be able to get a ticket for a tour in the next 15 minutes. You wait at the meeting point with your ticket and then you get to go into the main library. The library was huge and standing in the middle of it was quite an experience. Lots of books and the interior was as beautiful as the main hall. There were also statues lining the top and the top of the columns label the sections within the library.
It is definitely worth a stop if you are in the area to admire the beautiful interior.

Always something new!

By Kittygal 🇺🇦 🌻 |

This is one of my favorite spots in D.C. No matter how many times I visit, there's always something new to discover...in addition to architectural and artistic splendor at every turn.

This trip, I took in the exhibits on Rosa Parks, the centennial of the 19th amendment, an excellent history of a hundred years of comics, and some timely political cartoons.

Guided tours are offered, I've taken one in the past and they are excellent. Highly recommend! And the best part is if you've already gone through security to visit the Capitol, you can enter the Library via tunnel, with no need for a second security clearance.

Horrible Aggressive security guard- all because I didn't have a ticket.

By Rean G |

I was surprised and taken aback by the aggression we were met with when we arrived through the tunnel from the Capitol and did not have a ticket. The security guard obviously on a power trip was aggressive and made me feel embarrassed and like a leper for not having a ticket. He was rude, abrasive and aggressive to me. Ultimately the tickets were just a small inconvenience of having to log on and get a ticket, nothing to get so worked up about. How about you put some nicer guards at these entrances. YOu don' t have to embarrass international visitors for not having the right ticket (or not having one at all). Just help them get one instead of yelling . NOt a good look.

Once I had recovered from this experience, the rest of the library was beautiful and I enjoyed it.

Beautiful and interesting

By griffinrome |

Very beautiful architecture and meaningful sculptures. Look at Thomas Jefferson's book collection. Ask the volunteers questions--lots of great info.

Simply Amazing

By Ajerseybear |

If there is one building that you choose to visit in DC this is the one. The interior is simply Amazing. So much detail and craftmanship

Amazing library

By LisaMNUSA |

The great hall is gorgeous, but you can't to get in. The whole building looked very nice.
It's free, but you need book a timed entry pass on their website. The tour is self guided.
We visited there on a Wednesday late afternoon, it wasn't crowed.

Free admission – online tickets required

By GabrielaSeevetal |

An imposing building that we could reach underground from the Capitol. The library is huge and spans several buildings. The Thomas Jefferson Building can be visited, with bookshelves and a rare Gutenberg Bible. The “Great Hall” with mosaics, paintings and an imposing curved marble staircase is very worth seeing. The “Main Reading Room” is located under a 23 m high dome. Mahogany tables are being worked on there. Access is restricted to Capitol staff.

Neat experience, check out kids area

By Passport53 |

They make a library about as exciting as a library can be. It's a beautiful building thats full of history. If you have children, check out the kids area thats tucked away a bit in a back hallway. It provided a comfortable respite from a long day on the Mall.

Reader's card, shocking and amazing

By Scott |

Key to success at the library of Congress is getting a reader's card. If you just want to come check the place out as a tourist, do it you'll have a good time. Get a reader's card, free of charge, takes less than an hour, you have access to the entire compliment of stuff. And let me tell you, there's plenty of stuff.

Worth seeing

By Inga B |

Great library, well worth seeing. In addition to the richly decorated rooms, there was also an interesting photo exhibition in one room.

But you should reserve time tickets well in advance of your planned visit. Otherwise, you can still book remaining tickets for the day online at 8:30 a.m.

There is a security and bag check at the entrance.

Very engaging

By Katie |

*April 2019
I don’t know if it is thrill there, but the baseball exhibit was very interesting and engaging for both adults and kids. The rest of the library was also interesting, but nothing really stood out to me aside from the baseball exhibit.

Awesome place to visit

By DSandJK |

We weren't sure what we'd be seeing here, and it totally exceeded any expectations. Amazing architecture inside and out, interesting exhibits. Spent a lot more time than we thought we might. Don't skip this!

Best Library

By Jen H |

The library of Congress was absolutely amazing, and by far the most beautiful library. The architecture was phenomenal and so beautiful, the staff was incredible, the walls and ceiling were super pretty as well. It was as amazing as the White House, if not more, and would definitely recommend to anyone visiting DC. It is fascinating for almost any age, and was overall just incredibly beautiful, and has books in 470 languages while being the biggest library in the world.

It’s like no other site in DC

By Leslie k S |

Always my favorite building in DC. For some reason, the architecture always touches my soul.
It’s worth the trip, every time I go inside.

Old World Craftsmanship and Styling - Awesome

By tonyl46 |

We joined a local photography group, Washington Photo Safari, for our visit into the Library of Congress. Excellent experience, no need to be concerned if you are a photo beginner, novice, or experienced....cell phone, DSLR, or a new mirrorless camera...all levels are handled through an expert guide who explains to your level and satisfaction. And, there was lots of "free time" to meander, look, and explore the interior details as well as take a "few" pics. I was awestruck with the colors and architectural details inside our US Library...and the LC staff is very knowledgeable and polite. We visited in the late afternoon (2:30) and the crowds were light.

A mildly interesting experience

By Louie G |

It's an interesting brief sight. It's alright. I'm disappointed that you can't go any deeper into the building unless you are a researcher.

Incredible architecture!

By Valarie R |

We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the richly decorated Library of Congress. Seeing the Gutenberg Bible and Thomas Jefferson's book collection was intriguing as well. Making a reservation ahead of time allowed us to enter quickly via the shorter reservation line. Highly recommend!

spectacular

By Monia B |

If you visit the Capitol, from the Visitor Centre there is a tunnel that leads directly to the Library. Arrived, if you do not have a ticket you must do it from the machines, admission is free and we did not have to wait even 5 minutes to enter. Beautiful interior, too bad you can not approach in the reading room books

Not as good as I hoped

By jxx9595 |

It wasn't hard to get a time reservation, and going through security and admission was not too bad. The big wait was for getting into the main reading room. I arrived at 2 pm on a weekday, and the wait was about half an hour. An hour later, the wait was much shorter.

And the surprise was....it wasn't worth the wait. I've been in reading rooms and libraries around the world, and the LC main reading room was not particularly interesting or photogenic. I suspect most kids will be bored.

The other parts of the library accessible to tourists were variable. I liked the photo exhibit, but Thomas Jefferson's library was just okay. I didn't find anything else especially noteworthy. I recommend finding the western windows (on the second floor) and having a nice view of the Capitol.

Worth a visit? Yes, but it barely deserved four stars. It was a close call between three and four.

Don't count on a personal tour any longer

By JbRittt |

Preparing to go so I called to ask about the 1 hour tour, that I have read about, but he said they no longer give tours. So I will watch one online then download their map, when there, to see what I can. Called in April 2022.

I love this building...

By brandasa |

We got online tickets in advance - you can enter up to 30 minutes before the time on your ticket. Such a beautiful building! It only takes about an hour to tour inside but it's totally worth going in.

Come before 2pm so that you can visit the reading hall between 2 and 3 pm

By Alina A |

Very nice library, 51 Mio books, the Jefferson library was also very interesting. Come before 2pm so that you can visit the reading hall between 2 and 3 pm

Family Visit

By Bathsheba H |

The Library is beautiful. The staff was informative and super helpful. They had a game of I Spy for the little kids to get involved. The older kids loved the movie and the magnificent architecture.

Not to miss

By jean-charles e |

Very nice visit to magnificent places. This month there is also a remarkable exhibition of photos from the documentary collection.
Not to miss

Library of Congress

By Daniel Forssell |

Very cool building both exterior and interior. While visiting the area around the Capitol, be sure to check out the Library of Congress.

June Visit

By Jacob H |

Beautiful architecture and building! My family loved the views and getting photos of all of the rooms and details.

Breathtakingly Gorgeous

By ASBCRB |

You don’t see all the books unless you join and get a library pass, but don’t miss the architecture, mosaics, and paintings. The building is a marvel of its own. They also have exhibits that the public can see. You will be able to look inside the Reading Room to see how it is designed and the amazing sculptures and details. You need a timed ticket, but the visit is free. Don’t miss this beauty!

A first-class attraction!

By MKre84 |

How impressive! Certainly one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. Unfortunately, you can only look at the main hall from above behind glass, but that hardly spoils the experience! A must visit, there is no admission charge!

Historic and Elegant

By Jay |

The Library of Congress offers a close look at some historical and rare books. You are able to get a free Library of Congress library card if you wait in line and have photo ID. It's a cool walk around, but honestly you don't need to spend a lot of time here. I would rate this a high 4, I just think that it can be a bit difficult to navigate. I'm not sure I would visit again, but I did enjoy it.

Breathtaking Beauty

By Cheesepak |

Incredible decorations and beautiful architecture inside the building. Lots of helpful volunteers will answer every question and give you interesting facts. You will need to have a reservation to get in but it's free and easy. Definitely worth a visit!

Fantastic

By Catherinejulia |

Enjoyed a fabulous morning at the Library of Congress in February 2020. Beautiful building, amazing collection and the free and regular tours are so informative. Loved being able to get a laminated library card ( optional) which is valid for a few years. I treasure this. The visit was a true highlight of Washington DC. ❤️

Underrated Experience

By Keith D |

This may be one of the most beautiful buildings in DC. Built to mirror Italian renaissance styled architecture, the vaulted ceilings, mosaics and statuary are gorgeous. Times entry tickets are required and plan your visit so you can actually enter the main reading room rather than just view from an alcove above.

Fascinating history, beautiful building.

By Tbergster |

Our family loves the rich resources from the local libraries, but the Library of Congress was extraordinary. We chose not to take a tour, but wander at our leisure. Though a tour may have covered more details and history, the docets were abundant and very knowledgeable. The Gutenberg Bible was on display. I never knew several history making events that came from its making.
There are opportunities to see the reading room, but they were very limited time-wise. I even got a Library of Congress library card for use and research. I look forward to taking advantage of it when I'm back in town.
Even though it was spring break, we didn't wait long to get in. The process included a security check, and we needed time-holding (free) tickets, but it took little planning, and everything went smoothly. I consider this a must-see.

Jefferson Library is a highlight

By packcal |

The architecture and the Jefferson Library were our highlights.
Need timed entry, at least we did during our early April visit.

Very detailed architectural beauty

By Mike1232013 |

One the nicest buildings to visit in Washington DC. they also have a small collections of very old books that you can admire and the Gutenberg Bible.
Highly recommended.

One spectacular library!

By Car7177 |

This is one absolutely beautiful building. It requires a free reservation to enter. We still waited for about 30 minutes to get in on a Saturday. Totally worth it in everyone’s opinion. So gorgeous!

Best DC building interior

By tannerinasia |

The most beautiful interior out of any building I saw in DC. Really colourful and impressive. It was really annoying that I had to scan a QR code and and put in my info right before entering, but atleast there was no line. I went on a weekday so maybe that's why there wasn't many people there.

One of the best spots to visit in DC

By Worldtraveler8888 |

Required spot to visit when traveling to Washington DC. Amazing architecture and art. Historically, a must see for all Americans. One of the major reasons that makes America special, given the sheer volume of books held in the library. A little know fact is that anyone with a driver's license can register for a library card, which enables you to go on the floor of the Jefferson Building, which is well worth taking the time to do so!

So much to see. You will be amazed!

By Cynthia S |

Impressive building and collections. Wonderful volunteers! Everywhere you look there are symbols to interpret, decor and spaces that transcend expected museum experiences. The volumes of precious pages allows one to appreciate history and the written word even more. Books are cool! Knowledge is cool!

Amazing! Live @library is a great day to attend.

By Isa b |

We loved our visit at the library. I loved the exhibits, the opportunity to peak inside the actual library while people are researching there, the niceness of staff.

The Thomas Jefferson Library is stunning and so well documented. The photographs exhibit that was there was pretty cool too. The treasures are indeed treasures to be seen.

We went on Halloween Thursday during one of the Thursday's Live at the library events. We put on costumes, grabbed a drink and walked around collecting candy to the sound of DJ music. It was very very cool.

Love!

By michelle r |

It was my favorite visit in Washington, it’s just a great and impressive building and I love seen the Thomas Jefferson library.

Not to be missed

By David H |

Of all the sites that I visited in DC, this was the most impressive.
Entry is free, via timed ticket. Once inside, the building is full of ornate and opulent all and ceiling decorations. There is also the chance to see the Congress seating area. So glad that I decided to visit this wonderful building.

Don't miss this

By Kevin Y |

There is much to see in the Capital, but even if your list is short, please include the Library of Congress. The beauty of the building's interior is overwhelming. To see Thomas Jefferson's own personal library is a great attraction, as is the Guttenberg Bible and the Reading room. All librarians wearing the black vests are steeped in knowledge they are eager to share with you.

Happily surprised

By lewnettles |

We went expecting just a library and it’s much more of a museum. The architecture and detail in the decor was mesmerizing . Definitely worth the stop. You do need timed entry passes at this time .

Absolutely Stunning

By Steph S |

Visited the Library of Congress with my parents during a multi city break along the east coast of America, I can recommend going in the morning before it gets busy and being one of the first to enter I managed to get some lovely photos of the inside without any encroaching fellow tourists! Unfortunately we couldn’t go into the main reading room but we were able to view it from above and there are still a few other interesting things to see on your visit. All in all the visit wasn’t overly long, about an hour, but it really is worth a visit as the building itself and inside architecture is beautiful and at the end of the day it’s free to visit, you just need to reserve a timed entry pass online.

Forget Your Library Card?

By JNYCwriter |

Another worthwhile building to visit in Washington DC. This building is beautiful inside or outside. You can normally use certain of the libraries and think about all the famous people who have passed through the doors of the building. The artwork is also quite amazing. Located next to the Supreme Court and the US Capitol they are all next to one anther which makes for a pleasant afternoon.

Very Cool Place!

By Amy R |

I have been to Washington D.C. many times and never visited the Library of Congress until now. The building itself is beautiful. The overlook of the main reading room is very cool, and Thomas Jefferson's library is not to be missed. You do need a timed entry ticket, which is free.

Surprising

By Jussara Isabel T |

A spectacular place, full of positive energy from the exhibitions, quotes on the walls, the works of art to the priceless collection. I loved every minute, it just wasn't better due to lack of time! You need at least 6 hours to see everything

Very kid friendly except the reading room staff

By kantbyluv |

We went to Washington DC for Memorial day weekend (end of May) . We used the metro to get around . 2 adults 3 kids everything was easy to walk to and the weather was beautiful. This was our first time to the Library and I found the staff very friendly. The volunteers were so nice with the kids they had a I spy pamphlet with things to find in the museum. my only complaint was the reading room visit. Staff told us We had to get a time sticker to enter and showed us where to go to get it but they seemed very rude. We got the sticker came back and they had us wait. As the crowd gathered then they asked for a line and everyone just went in front of us. So I took my kids and lined up where we were supposed to the staff gave us a look. when inside the staff didn't explain anything about the room only shushed people and told them not to touch or keep walking. When I asked questions they were answered very short. "How do those people get in the room and in the desk area? Response- "They made an appointment". Oh is that to just read in here because its quiet? "response No they are doing research! I would give this place 5 stars if it wasn't for this area which needs improvement.

Don't Miss The Library of Congress On Your DC Tour

By Elisabeth C. |

This is a must-see in DC. The building itself is absolutely incredible, but make sure you ask the guides for information. They will share so much that will open your eyes as to what the Library of Congress really is- the world's research library. Try to get there before 3pm so that you are able to walk through the reading room. If it's closed, you can see it from above, but it's special to be able to walk through it as well.

Hidden gem

By HMom2 |

I had never thought of visiting the library before but so glad we did. The structure and interior are a sight to behold. We spent a lot of time reading the various quotes on the wall and admiring the architecture. Jefferson's library was pretty cool too

Fantastic architecture

By JP Explorer |

Most impressive is certainly the building itself. Opulent staircases and decorations throughout the building. If you are only a tourist - the main library hall (is to be seen from a glassed window on the top level). You may have to queue for it. Several highly interesting exhibitions (e.g. Rosa Parks currently) throughout the building including one of a few Gutenberg Bibles. Personally, I also enjoyed the artifacts and maps documenting the early conquest of Mexico by the Conquistadors. I would highly recommend a visit, even if you don't otherwise care about libraries and focus more in Instagram snapshots.

Amazing Gem, Underappreciated

By ThePlainsman |

This is one of America's greatest treasures, administered by true heroes who guard our finest treasure chests (too numerous and rich to do justice with a review here). Bravo!

Gorgeous and impressive! Go at lunchtime if possible.

By Freedom37641188431 |

We found that the place really thinned out around lunchtime. It is a gorgeous place to visit. The women in the family seemed to enjoy this much more than the men. It had a timed entry but we arrived an hour early and got in with no problems. There is an overlook into the reading room, so even if it is not open to the public, you can see it. I loved all the beautiful ceilings. You'll spend less than one hour. Then go next door to see the Supreme Court. After that you can eat lunch at Union Station down the street, or visit the Capitol Visitor's Center (but I suggest you get a tour through your State Representative's office to avoid the lines).

smaller than expected

By Stuart |

views over the main gallery are great, but i was a little dissapointed with this place. probably an hour is all thats needed here, but its pretty good.

Fantastic building and guides

By Gillian5555 |

Another free building to visit in DC . Wonderful building and article collection. Staff , guides were welcoming and knowledgeable, John helped us understand the little details that make the visit special , I think he was a volunteer.
Well worth an hour visit if you are near the capital building, but book a timed ticket to get in ( no charge )

Great experience.

By Sigi W |

Despite the huge amount of visitors, it was well organized. The Library of Congress was a great experience. I highly recommend taking a guided tour. John was great.

Nice pace

By Mariana |

We were expecting to see more books, the building is very nice and has some good expositions. The day we went the place was really full.

Go. Every time.

By Wynne W |

The Library of Congress is quite simply my favorite building in the world. I absolutely love it and try to go every time I am in Washington DC.

America's Library

By Jerry K |

One of the most beautiful building interiors in Washington DC and is often over looked by tourists. Don't forget to get your Library of Congress Card

MUST SEE!!

By CINDYROSE720 |

2020 February

We arrived here via uber early morning of President's Day. They were not open yet so there were about 30+ people ahead of us in a line. As soon as the door opened, we were inside in like 15 minutes. Free to get in.

There's like an airport-kind of security, bag scanner and metal scanner, at the doors.

The building was impressive outside but was EXTRA ORDINARY in the inside! Beautiful architecture! Lots of exhibits! Very informative. Lots of staff to answer your question. Even has a little sign where the staircase to the bottom level shown in the National Treasure 2 is. (But no, you cannot use that staircase)

This place is not-to-be missed when you visit the city.

Have a great visit!

If this review helped you in n anyway, please give it a thumbs up!

Self-tours only during COVID

Even though these are self-tours, they are still excellent and plenty of docents around to answer questions. Slots must be booked in advance on their website.

The Grandest Library of them all!

By Miss Savvy Travels |

I was looking for something to do after our work obligations for myself and a few coworkers and because the Library of Congress is open Thursday evenings until 8 pm, this was chosen. I had NO idea when I picked this (because it was free and open) that is was going to be so grand! It was also raining so we stayed longer than planned, opting not to go explore the monuments of the National Mall in the rain.

We reserved our free tickets online, some of us reserved them just a couple hours prior. We arrived, went through security and realized we were more in a museum than a library. The feel of the architecture and arches, marble, columns and intricately decorated spaces was breath taking. We went into several of the reading rooms and while we were more browsing everything, some of my coworkers did opt to get library passes which are good for two years and allow for certain benefits. If you plan to return more than once, I recommend getting the card.

I have been impressed by the NY Public Library, and this is on that level of architectural quality. This being the largest library in the world, housing some very unique collections certainly holds them all significantly. It feels huge, and creates the feeling of awe.

I do have a blog where I write about visiting in more detail, giving tips and traveling tricks for DC and itinerary building help. My link is in my bio if you are planning a trip there soon and want more information. I appreciate affordable stops and high-quality experiences! After we did walk to Mr. Henry's for dinner and it was a short walk through a lovely area.

Wow Factor

By billyboy07 |

Fabulous, fabulous place. Beautiful building. A must visit. Self guided tour. Just to look around is awe inspiring
Security/bag check in and out. Photography encouraged. No flash.

Definitely a Must See

By trippas123 |

There is so much to see and experience in the Capitol area and Congress Library is a part of that. It is close to the Capitol building with a passageway so easy to visit.
We found that each building offered something unique and all were worth seeing. We were sorry that we were rushed due to time restricitons.

A Must Visit

By Alexander S Ognibene |

tory, Research, Architecture, all in one. Having the ability to research and write my Master's Thesis here was one of the most amazing experiences ever. The tour was worth it as well. They are strict when it comes to back packs and water when it comes to the Reading Rooms.

Beautiful, but long security line

By Dianna R |

The line for security was long - it took about 45 minutes or more to get through it. Considering that we only spent about 30 minutes inside, it was probably not worth the wait. They were not very picky on the entry times on the passes, they seemed to let everyone in as long as they had a pass around the current time. The building is absolutely beautiful, especially the ceilings and marble. The reading room was closed, so you could only look into it. Some of the spaces/rooms were a little crowded and small compared to other DC buildings. If the security line is short, definitely go! If the security line is long, maybe spend the time doing something else.

fantastic

By Kai C |

Beautiful and inspiring place, done in a mixture of neoclassical, renaissance and Secession styles. There is the Main library, a collonaded atrium, the Jefferson library with a sprinkling of exhibits (this time Gerschwin, early Brazilian documents etc). From the architecture, the paintings, the exhortations, the titles of Jeffferson's. books it becomes clear what were was bedrock upon which this Republic was founded: Science, Truth, Art and Equality (not its marxist perversion, equity). The energy behind the founding was driven by the quest for Bueauty and Truth - you can't build an empire with the lazy phantoms of social justice. If you want to understand the US of A, a visit to this Library is an equivalent of having read a library-worth of books.

Worth the visit

By Genesis4ever |

Very nice place and Library to walk around, look and see. Impresive hall, stairs and place for 'readers'. It has an example of Gutenberg's Bible.

Beautiful

By Jennifer M |

You need a reservation to go but it’s free. I thought it was absolutely beautiful inside and the details were amazing. You won’t be there more than a hour

Take A Tour! A Must See Building!

By Garvp175 |

The Library of Congress is not just a building with books! it is a work of art, and has terrific exhibits to just amaze you. Take a guided tour, the guides are a wealth of know, and make the art murals come alive wit their messages. it is a spectacularly beautiful building too. Just helps make history, learning, and books and media come alive! Good for the whole family.

Most Beautiful Building in D.C.

By Stacy |

The Library of Congress offers guided tours but I chose to explore at my leisure. It is the most breathtaking building in D.C. If you’re in D.C. you have to make time to walk each level to admire the beauty. Photographs don’t do it justice.

Most beautiful building

By gljaggers |

My son and I were astonished at the beauty of the architecture of this building and loved every exhibit.

Awesome displays and incredible architecture!

By steady |

My husband and I recently visited the Library of Congress. We had free pre-arranged tickets that I recieved from the website. We arrived at 6:15 on a Thursday (late night is Thursday). Security was swift and we entered very quickly. The building is historic and absolutely beautiful. We enjoyed the Watergate anniversary display and Thomas Jefferson's library collection. We also enjoyed a section on the early Americans.

Self guided tour of the Thomas Jefferson building is very interesting

By flo220 |

We love libraries and how could we miss the national one? Entry to the Thomas Jefferson building (the only one you can get to) is free but you do need to make advance reservations. We were there when kids were in school and tourism was low so it was easy to get reservations and then we got right in. No guided tour but you walk around yourself following their map and see the beautiful building, the main reading room and more.

Amazing!

By Jack |

The Library of Congress building is a beautiful building on the inside and out, on Capitol Hill. The Library of Congress made popular literature available to the public, its main purpose is to serve Congress. Since I had come from the Capitol building, I was able to take a tunnel across to the Library of Congress. The first room you enter is very beautiful and has two floors. On the second floor, there is a viewpoint of the main room which is unavailable to the public. There are also side rooms which house popular literature, photos, etc. I highly recommend stopping by.

Must go for DC visit

By Miss Hana |

I am so glad we decided to take a visit here. Immediately after stepping up to the first floor, I was amazed by the luxury and grandeur of the interior. My eyes could not help but got drawn to the magnificent painting and patterns on the ceiling and floor, as well as the impressive marble columns with intricate sculptures on them. Definitely a must go and top highlight for my trip.

Beautiful beyond words

By Boots54 |

The architecture was stunning and the small exhibits (especially the one for the Gershwin brothers) were fascinating. This is a MUST-SEE national treasure that everyone should see on a visit to DC.

Amazing to see!

By triplenickel |

It may not be on everybody’s DC bucket list, but it should be! Incredible history and interior. Tickets 30 days in advance. You won’t be disappointed

One of our favorite spots!

By Pstaubesq |

Jefferson library was fascinating. The architecture and art was beautiful. Be sure to ask questions to the volunteers. One woman we spoke with was so knowledgeable and engaging. We appreciated her time and willingness to share.

Little know gem!

By stanton418 |

This is a very cool place to visit! It was not very crowded so we could move around and see a lot! We got to see and take photos of many this and it really was a fantastic experience!! I highly advise anyone to check this out!!

Our National Treasure

By jcantu409 |

Not only have amazing movies been shot in our National Library, but once or twice a year, the floor of the library opens to ANY / ALL those who wish to see the true knowledge of our Great American Nation. Anyone can visit and obtain a library card, can study where great leaders thoughts were/are captured on paper, and see that knowledge and our past is TRUE POWER.

Absolutely spectacularly beautiful building

By Lynn S |

Such a beautiful building! Words cannot adequately describe and pictures do not do this building justice! In every nook and cranny there is something new to see and some symbol or drawing or artwork. The library itself is over several buildings and the largest in the world. The building you go in is the Jefferson Building. Don't forget to go upstairs to the overlook to the reading room. It is so beautiful. One day I hope to have a week to just go and research while in the Library. You can also view Thomas Jefferson's library which was donated to Congress to begin the library. It is awe inspiring seeing Jefferson's actual books. They are currently digitizing the library. Make this a must see when you're around Capitol Hill

Something for everyone...

By Jeff90038 |

Fascinating. I didn't think it would be as interesting as it was. The building is beautiful and the displays and exhibits are incredible. There was something of interest for everyone in our group from 18 -88 years old.

Such an impressive place

By Sarah C |

This was a beautiful building with incredible contents on a majestic scale. We definitely learned much about the US structure and governance and culture visiting the LoC

Library of Congress visit

By quadmw |

The Library of Congress was breath taking. The staff were very knowledgeable and helpful. Seeing photos just doesn’t do it justice. A must see on a vacation in the Capitol.

Beautiful interior and a must see.

By Chris D |

One of the most beautiful interiors in the city. The LOC is a stunning building, inside and out. The fact that it houses so many historic works makes it even more impressive. While there are no longer guided tours, there are plenty of apps or websites that allows a visitor to navigate the LOC on their own.

The LOC is certainly worth a visit while in DC and is seldom crowded.

Beautiful building

By Allison L |

This building is simply beautiful inside and out. Floor to ceiling, the architecture and details are just amazing.
Favorite parts were Thomas Jefferson's library (collection of some of his original books) and the Gutenberg bible. You can see the rotunda part of the library from behind glass, but you cannot go in there without an appointment.

Good to see but nothing special

By Sorcham9 |

I wouldn’t have a huge interest in this but was nice to see and you can see things that were in movies ! We wanted to do the free tour but it was full even before it started

A Must See when in D.C.

By fjparol |

My daughter loves visiting filming locations from the National Treasure movies. We’ve been ticking them off our list and just visited the Library of Congress, Jefferson Building. Wow. Just Wow. I love great architecture and design and this building has the most beautiful interior out of anything I’ve visited in the U.S. I’ve spent time in Russia. The Hermitage Winter Palace still tops my list of most amazing interiors in the world. The LOC definitely makes my top 5 and possibly top 3. Couple the beauty with the learning that occurs while you’re here, and this is a no-brainer visit you must make.

Beautiful building, disappointing staff

By Jessica W |

I have always been in love with the Library of Congress, since I myself am a Library Director. I was extremely disappointed in the staff within the building. Most of them were rude and did not meet the standards of the employees that should be working there. If I had similar staff in my library, we would be an empty library. For what should be the gem of the library world, I was frankly disappointed.

Heaven for booklovers

By Rosemary C |

We made a timed reservation as required, and still had to wait in line for a half hour, probably due to the Christmas holiday. It was well worth the wait to visit this spectacular historic building. There is a self guided tour which is worth the time if you are interested and insures that you see the highlights of the building.

Beautiful building

By tjoneser |

This is a gorgeous building, seems like kind of a random selection of things to view and no tours were available so we did feel a little bit lost in there. There are docents floating around to ask questions of, and I wish we could have gone into the main library area, but it was free and worth seeing.

A must see

By adventix |

The place has a lot of history and architecture gems. Tickets must be secured in advance (online). The entrance is not at the top of the stairs but actually at the bottom of the stairs and to the left. Expect to spend here at least 2 hours.

Beautiful inside

By Teakwo23 |

This was such a beautiful building. One of the most intricate I’ve been inside. Its presence surpassed what was inside.

one of the MUST see attractions in DC

By ELKW |

you need to book the entry time, also need to pass through security check before entering the building. There are 3 building in the Library of congress, but visitors are only allowed to tour the Thomas Jefferson building, it's the most vintage and beautiful one

Enjoyed it!

By Brooke H |

Had an amazing time! Be sure to get a ticket online ahead of time, and get in line for the chamber tour when you get there as it isn't always open. Tons of room and not crowded, even when full of people!

Spectacular interior

By LesleyDublin |

Has to be seen to be believed. Stunning building. We booked tickets online about a month before our trip. There is no charge. The interior of the building has to be seen to be believed. The ceiling is unbelievable. We did a tour which was very informative. You can go up and look down a balcony to the library itself which is also stunning. If you are there on a Tuesday, from 10.30 to 11.30 and from 2-3 you can walk onto the floor of the library, you walk through. There is also the Thomas Jefferson Library which is contained in another area and you can see his books there. There is an information display beside that as well. It is a spectacular building and I would highly recommend it.

Bibliophile Nirvana

By Kristin S |

This was my first visit to the LoC and I don't have the adjectives to describe how incredible this experience was for a bibliophile with an interest in history. Not only is the display of tomes and miles of stacks breathtaking. The other details of the library such as the mosaics and statues left me in awe of the craftsmanship and attention that went into building this space. The library staff are attentive and clearly take pride in the space and are eager to share their knowledge. I may have discovered my post retirement employment.

Beautiful interior

By Lottelli |

We pre-booked tickets for a certain time so we did not have to wait in line.
The outside building is impressive - just like so many buildings in DC.
Thomas Jefferson’s library was really interesting. They also had an exhibit on maps with the first map to say ‘America’ on it.

The main lobby area is stunning. The colours are amazing and I spent a while just taking it all in.

You can see into the reading room which is stunning. You can’t go in side it though unless you have a research pass but even just to peer in it’s amazing.

Unspoken Gem of Landmarks in Washington DC

By Jcp650 |

There are so many attention-getting museums and buildings that vie for our attention when visiting Washington DC. Who has time for a library? Well, get that notion of what you think a library is all about before your cross the threshold of this truly spectacular representation of art, science, law, poetry, engineering, technology. It's just beyond words. They say there is more gold in the walls, murals and paintings than the rest of the city combined. It was the first building to have electricity and until 1940, it was the premier home of all knowledge about America.
I was able to go on a private tour but they have public ones that are worth it. Take the time to learn about the paintings, marble statutes and take some time to get yourself a library card! All you need is a current passport or driver's license and you too can look at the books in the stacks. No, we can't check anything out. I'm posting some photos from the tour. Some of the spaces were on the private tour, like the card catalog and the Senate reading room.

Library of Congress visit

By Jean A |

Had to be diligent about acquiring tickets to get in. I was afraid it would be crowded because we followed a school group, but the staff was fantastic. The Library staff was knowledgeable and very accessible.

Library of congress

By Jose R |

You need free, timed tickets to get in. It’s a beautiful library with plenty of history. The reading room is only open to researchers and can only see it from the second floor. We were able to use the Children’s library and spent there about an hour.

Impressive

By GMH153 |

Booking on line was easy even better was from the Senate Visitors Centre finding the underground way to the Library as it was very hot outside and missing all the queues

The library is always impressive with the architecture let alone the Jefferson Library and the Gutenberg Bible on display. Alongside a selection of of books which have changed America including Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring (memories of undergraduate essays)

There was a short queue to be allowed in the main library

Nice place to see

By Sarah G |

I and my children visited here, and really nice place to see. The buildings was amazing. My children really liked, and very interested about the history of it.

Beautiful library

By Mark Verhoeckx |

Beautiful library where one is let in in groups. The Gutenburg Bible can also be seen here.

Free admission

Spend time here!!

By CookseyMom |

We did a 'drive by' of this amazing building on our way from visiting the U.S. Capitol to lunch. I wish we'd had a lot more time than the half hour we spent walking through. The building itself and the beautiful architecture was incredible, but there were several exhibits that my husband and I wanted to see. Unfortunately, by then, our kids were very tired and museumed-out. Will definitely go back here and make it one of our first stops of our next DC trip.

Another must-do

By Gill O |

What a beautiful place. Prebooked our visit (it’s self-guided, not a guided tour) and wandered around at our own place. Plenty of volunteers ready to answer any questions. We didn’t go into the research library itself, were advised not to bother as you queue for some time then only get a few minutes inside. You can go to the first floor and see from above. Well worth doing.
We were there about an hour or so, it’s not a lengthy visit. But it is well worth exploring the smaller exhibitions to the sides. I believe they change regularly.

Absolutely beautiful

By Michelle L |

This extremely beautiful building can easily compete with some of Europe's treasures.
Although not as spacious as many places, the marble, the carvings, the ceilings, the deep wood contrast is exquisite. You can view the same books that Jefferson held and read, a unique representation of Rosa Parks, early colonization, one of only a few copies of the Guttenberg Bible printed on vellum, and more. It really is one of DC's must see.

Fabulous find for our family.

By Rick S |

Had to select a visit date, but haven't actually been there in decades. But we discovered a family treasure in these walls. The library contains a 776-page book of my family geneology published in 1940 with my family history documented back to 1303, over 1000 years, in Switzerland. I recently purchased the last five copies from the publisher for handing down to family members.

Don’t Skip This.

By EducatedandTravelled |

We visited on a Thursday evening for Live at the Library and it was the best. First, the interior by far the nicest in the city. An opportunity to walk through the Reading Room floor was like walking through the most hallowed cathedral. Enjoying a cocktail and some music in the foyer was great. This is a definite.

Beautiful Historical Building

By Lisa T |

As soon as you step inside it is just so breathtakingly beautiful. It is so well maintained and the architecture is just stunning. They just knew how to build amazing buildings that stand the test of time.

Beautiful historic must see

By Odisco |

Beautiful building - well organised and relaxed, even when busy. Informative exhibitions. Most importantly you can gaze longingly into the reading room wishing you had a reading pass and wondering how your life plans had not previously included this honour..

Amazing experience

By Ilene B |

The Library of Congress is amazing. There is a special room for Rosa Parks and embellished this room the most. You have to see history of a courageous woman who changed history. Again plan ahead get tickets online. Once you get into the Library go explore there are so many displays. I also remember a music display of musician Lionel Richie and his songs with Commodores and more.

Too beautiful to miss

By Wing_anda_Prayer1210 |

Changing exhibits are very well done. Just saw Rosa Parks, Women's Suffrage, Jefferson's library, and the first map that uses the name "America." The building itself is a work of art. Grab one of their tours, if you can.

Must see!

By cheekytiki |

Definitely a must see when visiting DC. This was my favorite building in the city. Beautiful interior and architecture. There were QR codes that you could scan and listen to a self guided audio tour which was neat.

The best parliamentary library I've ever been! Stunning ceilings and reading rooms!

By Arthur M |

Seeing the ceilings of the library reminded me of the Palais Garnier in Paris, and it was shockingly beautiful, the viewpoint of the reading room was stunning! I may not be a bookworm, but I would read books in peace in that beautiful room!

Don't forget to read Thomas Jefferson's library at the upper floor as well! But it's a pretty short visit to the library. I would say the lineup to enter was longer than the actual visit itself! We were at the actual street when we lined up 30 minuets before our time, and we entered 10 minutes past our alloted time.

Very nice library

By USASUN |

We visited this beautiful library on a Thursday evening during the extended opening hours. It was worth it. We were able to enjoy the beautiful building and the exhibition of old books with fewer visitors. Really an extraordinarily beautiful facility, even if the large reading room can only be accessed from the gallery.

Nerd Heaven

By Nekolover |

The inside of the library is incredibly interesting, chock full of meaning. The one thing is I didn't time it right to actually go inside the reading room.

Library card & fantastic art

By Maria F |

The art in this building is incredible. If you sign up ahead of time, you can receive a free library of congress library card and enter the stacks to explore.

Best architecture in the City.

By Ogadoo |

The Reading Room at the Jefferson building (main building) is maybe the most impressive room where I have ever sat in my life. You will need a library card which are immediately available to enter, The building also contains a terrific museum. Absolutely a must see!

Surprised by the beauty

By Tracie C |

In DC for a family trip and went to the Library of Congress because it was there. It is such a gorgeous building and quite a treat! Get there early for easy access to everything.

The most beautiful building in DC!

By Jolene C |

If you are visiting DC, do not miss the most beautiful building of all, Library of Congress. This building causes you to inhale and wonder at the genius of its architect.

Library of Congress is more than just books

By Roberlynn |

This winter holiday, I am not traveling overseas. So I am trying to take every opportunity to observe holiday festivities in DC. The Library of Congress was one of them and I had a wonderful tour given by Gerald, a dear alma mater friend who works there. It had a gorgeous Xmas tree decorated with books dedicated to 50 states. I found my kids’ birth states and mine. ☺️ The Library was built after the Capitol was in a fire in 1814 and it lost everything. Thomas Jefferson sold over 7 thousand books for about $23 thousand dollars to help start a library to provide sources and information for legislators primarily, which is now the Library of Congress. There is an exhibit of TJ’s original books and replicas and a grand room dedicated to scholars in mosaics; I enjoyed it immensely!

My dream

By reemakaa |

Amazing library. The dream of all book insects. I adored the library of Thomas Jefferson which contains 3000 books of every genre. One vosit is not enough..

Book signing

By zoey and chase 🐾 |

My 2nd grader had the opportunity to meet his favorite author Dav Pilkey, it was a great evening. They also have storytime for younger children. However if you have the chance to go by yourself it is worth the visit, take the train to Union Station and walk a few blocks to Library of Congress, such a beautiful scenario in DC.

A surprise that exceeds expectations!

By Frozen_72 |

It is one of the most beautiful buildings we have had the opportunity to visit in Washington, wonderful both outside and inside. To access the most famous and important sections it is necessary to make a reservation (to be made well in advance, free if you exclude $1 reservation per ticket), but it is absolutely worth it as the interior is richly decorated and not to be missed . Excellent welcome service and supervision of the visit.

Beautiful Archetecture

By Mike H |

It was worth a tour to walk through and see the architecture. They have the collection of books from Thomas Jefferson as well.

A jewel of architecture

By pneumotox |

Nothing to envy the most beautiful French or Italian architecture. The Renaissance style is perfectly mastered in the USA. Beautiful visit

Disappointing

By BateyBoy |

Unless you're really into the contents and history of the library, it's OK if you're in the area but not something I'd make a special trip to visit. Some of the security staff are particularly rude and aggressive.

Just a nice place to stay out of the sun

By 157henk157 |

Although it sounds ominous it is really not so impressive as I thought. It is fun to reach it through the Underground Tunnels from the Capitol Building, but the content itself is limited.

my favorite place in DC

By YellowFinch4927 |

My mother worked at the Library of Congress when we lived in DC. I never saw it until December 2019. Classical architecture was reason enough to go. the roots of our country are in this building. See it.

Palatial Neo-Renaissance Architecture reflecting On western Literary Greats

By Ashok Ganapathy Iyer |

The Jefferson Library of Congress in Washington DC represents the palatial reference of Renaissance Architecture and it’s distinct connection to the US Capitol complex with it’s Classical Dome. The western literary greats on the pediments and architraves juxtapose the fountain reminiscent of Florence and Venice.... A Roman Classical Extravagance

Beautiful

By Kinda Invisible |

This is a beautiful building and of course seeing important documents is a must when in The District. We were lucky to go when there weren't a ton of tourists so the guards made sure we knew we didn't have to line up single file to view. I'm not sure if that's the case when the crows are larger, but heads up.

Library of Congress

By ccarlson2022 |

The architecture in the building is truly amazing and reflective of most of the national buildings in DC.

You do need to reserve times entry tickets online but they are free.

Volunteers and very friendly and knowledgable about the entire collection.

One star because of the rudeness of the staff

By TERRAvelista |

This is a simply gorgeous building with amazing architecture for which it is known and we keep returning to visit it every single time we are in the area. Also is one of the few free remaining buildings to visit, besides museums as the Capitol needs booking months in advance, White House is not available to non-USA people etc

1. We booked this place 3 weeks in advance - you need to have timed entry to access it: there is only one queue for this yet people wanted to 'jump' the long queue all the time - it was raining lightly. I advised one older African woman with a walking stick to go under the entrance to protect herself while her more able friend to remain in the queue behind us yet the old woman decided to make fun of me(!!!) and discuss it with the people in front of us in order to jump the queue - no shame!!!!
2. Inside, you pass the airport style security and then you can go around to visit the building. I noticed on their map it showed the location of one of the Guthenberg bibles and after seeing the Book of Kels in Dublin I concluded is worth seeing this one too, since is bigger having 1200 pages. A 10 years old girl decided to come in front of me and step on my toes, leaving indentations on the leather of my expensive shoes - an apology does not repair the leather though!!!
3. Lots of unruly kids in the other areas too with the security staff shouting at them as they kept going where they were not allowed
4. Why 1 star though? Because one receptionist advised us to join the small queue and visit the Reading area, normally allowed only to researchers who organise this well in advance. After all, the Library is famed for it's millions of books, printed and audio material, maps, manuscripts, legislation pieces available to researchers only. However you do not see them and in the Reading area everything is located near the walls with lots of staff and security staff. My small crossover 14 X 14 inches containing only my valuables was deemed too big by a woman and then said rudely 'I am not going to argue with you'. I had to run down the stairs from the queue to deposit my cross over in the Coat check area and returning to the queue another member of the staff asked everybody to go near each other in what was a timed entry allowing you only 10 min inside the Reading room, then make place for another group. Your printed ticket for the time entry as well as the website mentions to respect the Covid rules, clearly contradicting what the staff does to you!!!
5. As I mentioned, you are at least 50 feet from any book in the Reading area where there is security every 10 feet as you go in circle to exit it yet, after visiting the rest of the building and try to leave, another security guy wanted to check my cross over as he said 'for books'! So basically these guys work on the assumption that visitors are thieves, despite everything mentioned above and if you have a bag is to hide a book, according to them!!!!!

Maybe for men is easy to deform their trousers with phones/wallets etc - very few women would do that. Following this place' rules, still leads to being insulted by the staff!!!! Returning here? No, I do not want to be insulted in all shapes and forms.

Very impressive

By Alex S |

Very impressive collection of books. The building itself is magnificent. Current exhibitions (Rosa Parks In Her Own Words and Shell Not Be Denied: Women Fight For The Vote) are very informative and interesting.
