My husband and I recently took our 6 year old grandson to the Lindsay Museum. He loved it! He could pretend he was the hawk soaring over Mount Diablo in one of their interactive exhibits to watching and listening to the handler of the turkey vulture, Diablo, as Diablo did his trainings. Our grandson loved the museum. He also loved that once outside the museum, there was a play area to run and climb, Larkey Park!

Great Children's Museum!

By Paul S |

The last time I was there was 40 years ago and a lot has changed. During our last Summer vacation, I took my family there, expecting the same, small museum with a lot of "touch" exhibits. Boy, was I surprised. Total and complete overhaul with a beautiful new building. The volunteers are excellent - knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. Excellent learning experience for the kids (and my wife and I) and great family-friendly venue.

Allow at least two hours and bring your camera as the handlers will bring the animals up close. The museum also sits in Larkey Park so you can bring a picnic lunch and spend some time geocaching and just playing. Walnut Creek does a great job with their park system.

good for kids and adults who like animals

By EagleObverver |

Lindsay is a small wildlife museum located in a section of a local neighborhood park. They are a place where injured animals can be brought, and so some of what you see may not be there the next visit, but there will be something else.

Clean location and fun meet and greet with a few animals!

By Rodney C |

The kids loved getting to pet a porcupine! The birds and other animals were interesting. The litle meet and greet with the owls was nice but the kids really went crazy about being able to pet a porcupine!

Up close and personal with the animals

By SuzanLaw |

This museum is small. They specialize in caring for and, if necessary, maintaining wounded animals. Where possible, the goal is to return animals to the wild. The docents are excellent. They are very knowledgeable and take time to answer your questions thoroughly. A good experience for children.

A special treat for your children and grandchildren!

By 862heather |

Thus is a small animal museum with attached clinic for injured wildlife and a nice small gift shop. Nearby is a miniature train museum especially wonderful during the holiday season.

Get close up to wild animals

By pieperhermosa |

We have a membership. It's a perfect outing with our young kids. It's not too big, but lots to see. They often have special talks, or behind the scenes look at the vets, or have an animal out for petting. I've learned a lot. As a member we have access to a lot of special events- like they brought in monkeys, another time a sloth, and another time wild cats. Plus, you get to feel good about your money going towards helping injured wild animals.

Perfect for little kids

By Tavishboo |

The live animals are amazing for the kids. At the porcupine show they all got to pet the porcupine! Programs aimed at a young audience just long enough. Easy content aimed at the kids. Lots of hands on and climb in and around stuff. Come early the indoor activities can get crowded and it can get stuffy.
There is a fabulous park right next to the building for when they have had enough education and just need to run. Very engaging play structures. We had six kids ages 20 months to 8 years. All had a great time!

Great place to bring hurt animals. Also for kids to learn an inter act with wild life

By bynner |

Lindsay Wildlife Museum, Serves as a hospital for hurt animals . Very good also for bringing children to inter act an learn about wild life. there is a park next door for a combination of things a family can do. Visit museum, picnic , play ground an there is also a pool there. One block up a small neighborhood store if needed.

Cute museum

By stacey1529 |

Cute outing for the kids 2 and 4 year old. We spend 1.5 hours here they enjoyed it but I wouldn’t be rushing back anytime soon. Good activity for a hot day to cool down

A Must

By MrPV |

They help all the hurt animals.. Plus it is fun for all ages..

By jjmail94526 |

The Lindsay Museum has done a fantastic job helping and rehabbing local wildlife. If you find an injured native animal, they are the ones to call! Don't try to rehab the critter yourself.

Their volunteers are the main force that keeps the museum going and the exhibits are geared to all ages.

The non-releasable animals are displayed and rotated out of the exhibits so they are not stressed and they are given a lot of enrichment exercises to keep them mentally and physically fit.

Excellent Museum Specializing in Raptor Type Birds

By John G |

Took my kids to this wonderful museum. They specialize in treating and bringing back to health raptor type birds. On our visit we saw an American bald eagle, owls, and many other birds of prey. Nice exhibits and at times volunteers take one bird out in the garden area for a closer view.

Very unique and truly a gem of a museum.

A Gem of a Museum

By Ed C |

My Aunt is a passionate supporter of the Lindsay Wildlife Museum and how I ended up there one visit. The staff is extremely friendly and incredibly helpful as you navigate the exhibits. Although geared toward a younger audience, it truly has a great deal to offer for the whole family. One of my favorite exhibits is an interactive chance to fly like a bird. Although my aunt is a regular visitor, it took my encouragement to get her on the platform for the first time. She had a blast soaring vicariously through the air. Really worth a stop if you are visiting or just looking for something else to do on a rainy day.

Great Place to take your grandchildren

By Maggie M |

My grandchildren ages 8 and 4 years we very interested in all the exhibits and presentation as was I . I especially enjoyed the Red Shoulder Hawk exhibit as we had a nest and babies and Mother and Father in a nest near the swimming pool I go to so we would have sightings all the time. I learned a lot about them.

Surprising place to interact with wildlife in suburban neighborhood

By Britt-Marie D |

To call this vibrant animal rehabilitation center a museum is, I think, a disservice to those looking for something fun and interesting to do in the neighborhood but associate "museums" with quiet places where you stand and look at objects in a solid state.
The Lindsay is a well-lit, cheerful place clearly geared toward children. However, our entire extended family, aged 3 to 60, enjoyed our visit.

The main floor houses maybe a dozen or so birds that live at the center, including various hawks, falcons, ravnes, and owls. Some of these birds are tethered to the top of their enclosures so that there are no bars or fences between visitors and birds. These are beautiful birds and it is a real pleasure to be so close to them.

The staff are extremely knowledgable and eager to talk about the animals in their care. We also had the opportunity to pet a snake while we were there. There are also several interactive exhibits to explore at your leisure. My aunt, who lives nearby, says there are special events and activities on the weekends, but we were there on a regular Friday. Great gift shop too.

Worth a couple hours.

Great little wildlife place off the beaten path

By Adam M |

So you're not gonna find it unles you're looking for it, but this place is really interesting and informative.

Definitely spend a day looking around here and learning about the local wildlife

The Lindsay Wildlife Museum: You, your grandchildren and your friends must visit!

By 631jon |

My wife and I went to the museum because we wanted an exciting place to take our grandchildren. This we knew from so many of our friends. The guide who toured us through the facility was knowledgeable, very personable and had a wonderful demeanor with children as we had some in our group. We learned about the purpose of the museum, a new respect for the living creatures and some fun, unexpected facts that the guide shared. This visit is valid for everyone. We have gone back with friends, with our grandchildren and by ourselves.

Great place to see birds of prey

By J L |

This is a great place to see various animals brought in to the Lindsay because they have been injured. There are usually a number of birds of prey on display which cannot be released into the wild because their injuries make survival in the wild impossible. Be sure to take time to see the presentation by the animal care staff who show animals currently being nursed back to helkth by the dedicated staff.

Awesome place for kids and adults

By DJ D |

Lindsay is a wildlife rescue and release center first. But the programs & non-releasable animals they cannot release are on display and used for education and enrichment. Great place to visit, great value !!

Great place to visit to teach children about wildlife

By jmi1003 |

We took our goddaughter and her brother and was surprised at the number of birds and creatures they have here! We also got to see the golden eagle up close and personal when one of the caretakers brought her out. Educational and fun!

Education and Fun

By Barb P |

Great accessible wildlife museum. Learn about the critters that populate California. The docents and staff are wonderful. Check the website for talk times and you can meet up with eagles, tortoises, squirrels and more. Wonderful for kids but very interesting for adults.

getting a close-up view of the wildlife around us

By douglas w |

From the turkey vulture outdoors to the predator birds inside and the hands on playroom spaces, the rich experiences of getting a close up view of the wildflife that surrounds us and the in depth explanations of habits and features...a family with children can have fun, learn and explore for well over two hours

Fun time with grandson

By hutchss |

Great, well-maintained wildlife museum! Very nice, informative and friendly people work there who appear to enjoy their jobs. Great place for kids, especially those ages 2-4 as many animal exhibits have portals at young kids’ height making it easy for the little ones to see. A fun day today for grandma, grandpa and grandson!

Great for younger kids

By SFWorld |

Lindsay was the go-to place when our first son was 3-4 years old. And now that he is in first grade his school returned there again and it still works. Having live birds of prey in the museum is always "awesome" and the other hands-on portions are still crowd pleasers. I'm not sure if by 2nd grade it will be too young for him but if you combine it with nearby Larkey Park you have a great afternoon out with the younger kids.

This place is amazing and a lot of fun to go there

By 92Mike92 |

The Lindsay Wildlife Museum is incredible and we have had a lot of fun there. It has been an amazing experience to visit there.

Great for your little wildlife enthusiast!

By djsulli424 |

This is a neat place to visit. It is geared for the 10 and under crowd, does have a bit of something for all ages. The displays are interesting and interactive. The talks are informative. I wish the animal hospital was a bit more integrated into the museum side of the facility.

very educational trip

By CalifRahu |

seeing natural wildlife for the area is always impressive. The people who work there are also informative and very helpful. Hands on classes for children is the best educational experience of all. I highly recommend this Museum for being unique, informative and helpful to our natural wildlife.

Great musiam to visit

By Karen B |

Terrific for kids and adults alike. Its a non profit...but a great adventure in learning about anaminals in Nor Calif.

Family time 101

By Tzigrrl |

A great place to get you and your family in touch with native wildlife near you. There are some stuffed representations and well as live animals as Lindsay is the only place in the area that does full wildlife rehabilitation of native wildlife saving all those lovely creatures from injury and illness.

Great daytrip w children!

By Callbob1 |

I have lived in Contra Costa for years, and yet this was my first visit (my grandchildren were visiting). I was not sure what to expect and this attraction exceeded my expectations. The cost to enter with the AAA discount was $26 for two adults and two children. The exhibits are different and enteratining. It isn't a large venue, but is local and easy to visit. There were a variety of live raptors (falcons and owls) that were right there in front of you (a few feet) and the information plus the extremely knowleable volunteers made everything even better. They had informational 'shows' in the afternoon that ran close enough together to make the visit unusually interesting, especially with the intimate small audience. The wildlife they were showcasing was different than going to a zoo. e ran short of time to be able to drive to the Oakland Zoo. This was a very acceptable alternative. I would definety go back and support this organization. Like I said - it is local, easy to visit, no crowds and a quality experience to everyone.

Great place to take grandkids - especially those under 10

By Carrieb1959 |

Great "hands on experiences" and little lectures, that are, just right for younger kids. This has been my 6 year old granddaughters favorite place to go with me when she.visits for 3 years. Not intimidating.at all and their playroom is also a required stop when we visit!

Very Entertained Family

By syd02030 |

I went here a couple of months ago with my family. I think my sister got a little too into looking at the squirrel. She probably stood there in front of it for twenty minutes. They also had rare birds and snakes on display. What I thought was pretty cool was that all the animas there had some kind of health problem that would prevent them from surviving in the wild, so it's not like the animals are there just for the amusement of people.

Great visitor center, great rehab center!

By Dana L |

I remember going here on a school field trip as a child— it’s since been upgraded, remodeled, and the visitor center is well designed. I’ve taken my nieces and nephew, as well as my friend’s kids here. It’s great for the kids—and I always enjoy it too. Good schedule of short talks and activities every half hour or so. Highly recommend for both locals and visitors to see and learn about native California wildlife.

Birds at Lindsay

By milesdc50 |

Great place to see birds of prey up close. Knowledgeable informative staff and good presentations . Nice location next to Larkey pool and the park. Kids liked it more than once

If You Like Animals You'll Love the Lindsay Wildlife Museum

By AnonymousPurveyor |

My friend would take injured birds (and such) here and they would either help him directly or give him a resource. I've been here as well. I'm not much of an animal person, but I can appreciate this attraction and all the good that LWM does for animals.

By Marcia G |

Just an interesting place to visit if you're in the area. Happened on it by accident, and were glad we did.

Great pass time if especially you like animals. I recommend spending 2 hours minimum. I had fun

Fun for kids and adults too!

By Hawley H |

The Lindsey is a great place to take young children. Just big enough for litle ones not to be overwhelmed.Wildlife that kids can recognize near their homes-raccoons,birds,snakes,etc. They also have a "hands on" art room for children to make prijects related to their visit. Very friendly staff and volunteers.

Wonderful local wildlife hospital and museum!

By Elizabeth H |

The Lindsay Museum is always at the top of our list of local attractions we proudly show visitors! It's a great place for all ages to learn about kcal wildlife and to appreciate the work that the hospital does rehabilitating and caring for injured wild animals; it's pretty extraordinary whe younger the #'s of thousands of animals that have been treated here.
They often have special exhibits that complement the work of the hospital.
We are so fortunate to have such a fantastic facility here in Walnut Creek!

Great hands on

Definitely worth a visit !!

This is an incredible Museum

By 92Mike92 |

Everything about the Lindsay Wildlife Museum is amazing. We took a group of kids there and they completely loved the place.

We have had many great day trips here!

By R C |

Very interactive Museum. My grandson has always had a great time here! It is the right size for toddlers and young children. Great hands on exhibits and play areas. There is also a great playground next to the Museum.

Support this wonderful refuge for animals

By Kathleen S |

We are members and have been for years. This is a super fun place to visit where you learn about local wildlife and see the wonderful animals that are cared for here. This hospital saves so many birds and other creatures every year. Please support them by joining, visiting and donating. One day you may find a sweet local bird or other animal in need and you can take them to Lindsay and they will save their lives. We are so lucky to have them in our community.

Hidden Gem

By Andy L |

Must see for their raptor program. Great little wildlife programs for children and adults alike. On the weekends one is able to get up front and personal with the raptors and other animals. I petted a porcupine the other day. Great to see hawks and a Bald Eagle Bert close up. GO!

Wonderful Business Model

By 773douglasf |

This museum is a wonderful source of getting to know your 'outside' neighbors, the things that go 'bump' in the night. Children love to interact with animals, and they have plenty of chances to do this. It is also a great place for rehabilitating wild critters. In fact, if you plan your visit during the spring, you can see all of the 'fell out of the nest' birds. Make sure that you leave yourself plenty of time for a visit. Especially good for young children. Enjoy!

Pleasant, small, interesting

By dan f. |

Nice place, interesting exhibits and animals, great hour or two for the kids, the Smithsonian it is not.

Visit with Hayley

By Leo A |

Great place to take little kids, a rescue like facility where kids can get a close up view of animals and plenty of games, books, and toys about animals. We purchased a 4 foot long snake for our granddaughter. And afterwards there is a park close by where the kids can play on swing sets, etc.

Great place for young kids!

By Christina |

This place is perfect for teaching your kids about animals. They also rescue injured animals in their animal hospital. They have lots of demonstrations and even have a time where your kids can pet some gentle animals. All the animals are securely taken care of so your children won't get injured or attacked. They even have a gift shop!!! And there are many animals!!😁

An Unique Kind of Museum - Worth a Trip

By David G |

The Lindsay Wildlife Museum has a collection of exhibits concerning the local flora and fauna in the area, as well as live animals who have been rescued from the wild. I have never seen a museum quite like this, and it is an excellent way to become familiar with the plants and animals in the area. One of the docents, named Rebecca, was particularly informative and very pleasant.

Great place to see some wild animals

By Andy L |

Up close and person experience with raptor birds and many other animals. Great staff of animal keepers and staff.

Animals!

By Vessiev |

This place is a little neighborhood gem! This is not just a museum and not quite a zoo, but a great place for kids to meet live animals, observe a session in training, feeding or petting animals all while learning about wildlife and nature! Kids of all ages will find something interesting here. Parking is free and abound and the $7 admission fee for adults is well worth it! We will be coming back again and again!

A Wonderful Place for Kids

By Mikegilson |

Lindsay has been a wonderful place to introduce young children to wildlife for many years - both of my girls grew up going to Lindsay. Lindsay is also a terrific facility for caring for injured wildlife and is in that regard pretty unique in the East Bay.

Fantastic Museum of animals.

By Richard D |

We have taken our kids and grand kids here many many times. It's a place for all families. They have exhibits of animals, birds, endangered species, and have trained staff to explaine about each as well as handle wildlife that are brought in because they need mending and recovery periods...

Very nice wildlife center

By jim41752 |

Fantastic wildlife center, primarily birds rescued and in rehabilitation there. Superb experience for children.

Super nice people and place

By Dave D |

Had a couple hours to kill and we stopped in. What a neat place with well cared for animals and a great staff. Go visit.

Wonderful museum, great for kids of all ages

By Tom M |

This is a great assest to the Walnut Creek community. This is fantastic for kids who can get up close and involved with nature. Pleanty of live animals as well. Good place for kid birthday events, and reasonable prices for a birthday program/admission. They also have an animal hosptital to take care of wild animals brought in by the public.

Animal Rescue

By dlglidden |

We've used the Museum mainly as a wildlife refuge and rehab center. A few years ago we found a baby squirrel under our bed. It was obviously brought in by our cat, Max. Max never learned to kill birds and small animals, he just likes to play with them. The squirrel probably fell out of his nest. Whatever happened, we couldn't "put him back." We took the squirrel to LWM; they agreed to feed and raise him until he could fend for himself in the wild, then to release him into a suitable habitat.

LWM is a wonderful community resource as well a being a first-rate museum.

By SharonTuckerDuarte |

This is a small Museum with heart. It is great for small children, I cannot imagine taking teenagers there. They have hands on exhibitions downstairs and if your lucky you can watch the prey birds having their exercise outside.

great for kids

By smpgrl |

I love this place because we can take found and or injured wildlife to them to care. They even let you know what happens to them

Still Love Lindsay

By CentralMass3 |

My wife and I were recently hiking along the community trail which separates Lindsay from Larkey Park. While we were enjoying the landscaping behind Lindsay, it was our good luck that multiple outdoor demonstrations were underway with a few of their Birds of Prey. We were able to see the birds quite closely. The demonstraters just motioned for us to "Ssshh" with their fingers to their lips. The Great Horned Owl was especially impressive and Large. A barn owl, and red-tailed hawk were also closely visible at their respective demo stations. The Bald Eagle demo was underway, and was a bit farther away from us. But this was another positive Lindsay experience for me. And it wasn't planned at all.

Wonderful place for children

By Twinoakmom |

I've been here a few times with my grand daughter when she was different ages. Each time she enjoyed it in a different way. she interacted differently each time

Wild Things Around Us

By Elaine S |

The Lindsay Wildlife Museum is a multi-faceted facility, including a wildlife hospital. I recently took my grandchildren there, because on their last visit, we took a bird we found wounded in our backyard to that facility for care. I wanted the kids to see the museum's programs for children. They enjoyed seeing several wild birds who are now residents there, discovered exhibits of wild animals in the area, and interacted with docents in two shows: watching a small fluffy opossum perform its trained moves and seeing an attendant treat a new "patient" at the hospital. They had a great time, even though the exhibits were less than they had offered in past years.

Wonderful interactive experience for kids

By John H |

Want to experience flying over the slopes of Mt. Diablo? You can lay on a set of wings and soar along with your imagination. Come fly with the birds. Speaking of birds; watch an owl watch you, see his head turn almost all way around, see hawks, eagles and other live creatures. What a wonderful, non-digital experience for you and your kids. Sound like a commercial, it is almost. My grandson loved it, both when he was six and now at almost nine years old. There's hands on workshops, short demos and docents to guide you. You'll love it too no matter how young at heart you are.

Great place, especially with kids

By Brad M |

Always great to see wildlife up close and personal. The docents really care about the animals and are very informative. They also run a clinic where you can take injured wild animals for check-out and release.

Go if you can!

By Emmaus_PAFisherman1 |

Lindsay is an excellent museum for its type. It is located in a city of about 67,000 people,
My grandchildren have been in an education program, I have attended a few of these programs. As a career educator I can attest to the quality of the teachers and the lessens. The museum has several in house animals for viewing

It's ok...

By Lisa D |

Lindsay Wildlife is an amazing organization. Love what they do for animals. The Museum itself is small, about 10 or so live animals to see and then a few activities for hands on. It is best suited for a young child who would like to see the animals and enjoy the activity room OR for an older child who is very interested in learning more about animals, habitats and such. Hard to keep and in between age child engaged for more than an hour or so. It is located right next to a great park and combining the park and museum makes for a good outing.

A Good Summer Time with Kids

By M S P |

Relatively small place but houses good many living species of birds and reptiles, the place also has an avian hospital in house. Live Shows are arranged to explain features of rare birds. Very educative experience for students of all age.

View local wildlife

By Danielle D |

This organization has had a consistently positive impact on the community for my whole life. They are experts at rescuing and rehabilitating local wildlife and offer some great educational programs as well. Stop by and see local animals you'd have a difficult time spotting on the trails yourself.

"Wonders Never Cease"

By Marsha S |

Lindsay Wildlife Museum is one of the best inter-generational destinations that I've ever been to. There's plenty of seating for Grandma and Grandpa while the kids view the Wildlife. All can play at the hands-on displays or sit and listen to animal talks with the animal right there. Most animals were injured (a roadrunner with limited eyesight, a peregrine falcon with an injured wing, magnificent owls on tethers being hand fed) and unable to return to the wild. There weren't any animals in the hospital part the day we visited. But you can see them care for injured animals behind glass. Besides care for animals, Lindsay has an active and extensive educational outreach program and lots of classrooms.

We combined Lindsay with a visit to ARF, Tony La Russa's Animal Rescue Foundation one of the best dog and cat rescue shelters in the USA which is nearby. It is not sad to go there.

You will be inspired to visit both these places.

LOVE

By DanaStangel |

I loved this place. You can learn so much about local wildlife here. You can also get a lot of behind the scenes info on what a wildlife hospital is really like. Pure awesome. Great for wildlife lovers and families.

animal care and education

By mark s |

just love the way the docents teach you about the animals and then show children all the interesting aspects of each animal.

By DebbieDebb22 |

Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall, Lindsey Wildlife Museum is the place to visit for the whole family. There are uncaged raptors and owls sitting high out of reach of human hands, but you are close enough to make eye contact, hear them "talking" and it feels like you are having a once in a lifetime experience out in nature. There are reptiles to view in their environment, plenty of docents to answer questions, and there are lots of hands on activities for all ages. You can sit in a nest, virtually fly like a bird and even measure your wingspan! If you are in the area, it is a must see destination!

Total turn off!

By CA-Traveler1022 |

I used to be a big supporter of this organization... until they screwed me over at their fund raising auction. I had bid the "buy it now" price on several wines. After the auction terminated the auctioneer went around and got people to outbid me!

The exhibit remains great for families and young children but we stopped going (and supporting) there after their treatment at this event.

Fantastic site for children and their parents!

By k m |

Great museum! Knowledgeable workers and volunteers, and great exhibits. Can't wait to go back. Just as fun for parents as kids, in my experience.

Wonderful Place for young children

By Eurotraveler280 |

The Museum is really a wildlife hospital where birds, snakes and other small animals come to be rehabilitated. There are docents who conduct hands on tours of the animals from the injured to those who will likely remain at the Museum due to extensive injuries. Adults will also enjoy the visit.

Fun for all ages

By tobshan |

We went with my 10 year old twins and 13 year old son. My teenager was not excited about going but once here he loved it. Live animals all around with quick, easy explanations to keep things moving. The rat was a big hit with all of my kids and they left with plans of getting one as a pet one day. A lot of hands on things to keep it interesting as well.

We saw a short talk with a golden eagle which was interesting. The key is that it was short.

There were many different types of birds such as owls, a roadrunner, and other larger breeds to look at. A few water animals and domestic breeds like a bunny and guinea pig were there plus a lizard and tarantula. The porcupine was actually amazing to see. I'm not sure I've ever seen a live one before.

The clear beehive was really interesting too.The bees had outside access and a clear tube into the hive where you could see that there are so many more bees than you would ever realize.

The animal hospital was interesting. I'm sure you could go when more is going on in there but we saw the doctor feeding a baby bird with tweezers and meal worms.

This is a nice family hour to hour or two. There is a park outside if you want to picnic but we went to downtown Walnut Creek to enjoy the town for lunch.

Great for Parents or Grandparents to take kids

By CaliforniaWanderlust |

Lovely experience especially seeing the animals and birds that are recovering and being handled by the staff.

A wonderful place to learn more about local wildlife

By Suzy K |

Well informed staff that helps kids learn about wildlife in the Bay Area. There is a nice park outside. They offer a lot of educational programs. I have taken many wounded animals/ birds here over the years and they are always professional and caring. A great place to visit with children or just to go and see what animals are there and learn more about them for yourself.

Great place to visit

By PGDad |

My wife and I visited here and loved it. If you have a little while it's worth your time to stop by.

Great learning experience for the kids

This place is full of learning experiences, exhibits, staff to help teach, explain, answer questions and a neat layout and fun place for special events i.e. halloween!

Wildlife at its best - and animal hospital

By Cali_Cake |

This is a great place to bring the kids. You'll get a first hand look at the wildlife of Northern California. The birds (owls, Hawks, etc) are all perched above their habitats - looking so very close. The best part is the live eagle. They also have a working wild life hospital, where they will take in injured birds and other wildlife. This is a great place to visit.

Not Worth It

By Michael B |

For what you have to pay to see a few birds, lizards and animals is not worth it. Its very small and we were not there more than 30 minutes. I guess if you have small children it would be interesting for them

Great experience

By nan s |

The Lindsay is a wonderful asset for the City of Walnut Creek and it's animal friends. This is a rescue facility that engages the community in educational, artistic, and social activities. It is a special place for both children and adults.

Science for every age

By Laura B |

Small facility, but full of engaging activities for all ages to share. The live animals brought clarity to issues as human encroachment on animal territory.

Hang with the animals at the Lindsey!

By vwheato |

The Lindsey is a fabulous to go and spend a few hours, hanging with the animals. The hospital is not always able to release its patients back into the wild-- they may not be able to hunt, or might have become too habituated to humans. When possible, the Lindsey employs these 'survival-challenged' creatures as animal ambassadors in their museum. A variety of hawks, owls, and eagles, plus opossums, raccoons, and squirrels can be observed up close in carefully crafted enclosures. Open afternoons, Tues-Sun.

Great Day With Granddaughter & Great Wildlife Hospital

By takeme2vallarta |

This summer my granddaughter and I had a very interesting day visiting all of the feathered, furry and winged creatures. There are many volunteers that gave wonderful information about a working bee hive, a rescued fox, and many other winded birds, owls, eagles etc. We both enjoyed the day and were happy little shoppers in the lovely gift shop.

I never thought I would be carrying a Coopers Hawk 2 months later into the hospital for care. Found on a grassy area outside of my home I couldn't bear the thought of neighbor dogs or cats catching and eatting it. Even though I just tried protecting fledgling birds from a Hawk earlier in the year. I still tried to give this particular hawk a chance just as I had the songbirds. Anyhow I was hesitate to bring it in to the museum/hospital because I was sure they would ask for donations for bringing it in. Much to my surprise they were appreciative to recieve the Hawk and never once even hinted they might like a donation. The drop off was quick and smooth and they even gave me paperwork with a check in number that I could call back and check on his progress.

They asked for a brief description of the circumstances he was caught in and carried him away for his care. That easy. Very impressed.

Unique and Educational

By Cee Miranda C |

This is a great place for the entire family. If you get there in the early morning, they have many of the birds of prey out and some of the other animals. This is the best place for an up-close-and personal encounter with wild animals. Kudos to them for their wildlife rehabilitation work.

Wildlife Central

By Grampy_Bob |

This excellent resource provides educational programs and exhibits and includes a hospital for injured wildlife. Well worth a visit.

take your kid here

By Gary L |

I visit here often with my 6 year old granddaughter. It has the best beehive I have ever seen anywhere, with a marked queen and great visibility of all their activity - larvae, hatching, gathering of pollen, and flight to the outside world. My granddaughter is especially captivated by the raptors and their feeding, and between feedings they sit tethered above where you can see them and listen to them.

Bring The Kids

By lovetotravel2 |

This is a great place to bring your kids (or grandkids) to explore local wildlife. We have been here on several occasions and have always discovered something new each time. The staff here is extremely friendly & helpful.
Located in Larkey Park gives you the chance to have a "special" day with the kids as noted by previous posts.

Great place to take young children

By LindaL246 |

We look forward to taking some of our youngest grandchildren and returning for a visit. We (adults) especially liked the hospital demonstration through one way glass plus a TV screen so one could see a bird being examined. The docent gave us the bird's history, how it had been wounded, and that it would be released later that day. It was fascinating.

I enjoyed the infrared black and white photography display in the basement. It wasn't, however, easy for us to find.

Parking is limited but one can park on the street in the non-neighborhood, houses area. One can also park across the street in the church parking lot, but not on Sundays.

Great for kids, close up and real?

By globeHopper56 |

Lots of wildlife and good close up animals of interest for those under 14. Laid back and casual environment.

Fun with the kids

By amylfed |

This is a fun place to go with the kids, especially if you're short of time. It's not a very big place but they've got some cool stuff and some animals.

Grandson Heaven!

By dweiss77 |

What a fun and educational outing! This place never gets old . We all have our favorite animals to see and always want to see the new exhibits. So important to have this non-tech time!! Prefer to go on weekdays, especially during school year. Enjoy!

We truly enjoyed our visit to the Lindsay Wildlife Experience. We learned a lot and saw beautiful animals and art. We highly recommend this museum!

AWESOME WELL ORGANIZED MUSEUM

By Helen S |

Took my 8 yr old Grandson. We had several hands-on experiences with animals. Got to see an old Vulture being carried outside of his cage by a docent. A totally wonderful experience.

NEVER IN MY F LIFE WILL BE HERE AGAIN

By Carlos R |

If you find a animal PLEASE DO NOT BRING THE ANIMAL HERE.. we found a bird and we take care of the bird.. she was recovering well and she ate and drink water.. we bring the bird to the rehabilitation center for a professional take care of the bird and return the bird to the natural habit.. we call one day later they kill the bird with the justification of "is the best decision" how this could be possible? PLEASE BE AWARE THIS PEOPLE JUST CARE ABOUT THE DONATIONS AND NO FOR THE REAL ANIMALS...

So many raptors!

By Monika H |

I love to bring my grandkids here. We live nearby and are members. It's so much fun to bring the kids to the member programs or just visit the animals. Everyone always has a good and memorable time. Some of the new social gatherings, such as happy hour...are fun too.

The staff is very good at engaging children in animal science. The rescue of these birds is a nice cause as well.

A Must See on Any Walnut Creek Visit

By Julie M |

This museum shows all of us how nature is right in our backyard. Kids learn a lot about animals and their behavior, and for us adults, it is always a good reminder that we are stewards of the environment around us. It's also nice to know that if you find an injured animal, there is a place to turn to. They are also very helpful if you need to call, which we have done a number of times!

A great place for seeing wildlife and they save animals that have been hurt and nurse them back to health.

Excellent facility, educational for all ages, thoughtful staff. Well worth your time - highly recommend.

Birthday party a great time!

By June K |

The staff is most accommodating with set up and take down from parties. The interaction with a couple of animals was quite nice and each child got a chance to interact. One suggestion......take paper towels and some sort of rags for your clean up as they do not provide that.

Birds gone wild

By alohakai925 |

This is a very nice experience. It is part museum but most of the action is in the live animals. You can see different wild birds that for some reason are not in the wild. At certain times you can watch as the vets and techs work to restore health to a sick or injured animal. Most of the action is on the upper floor but it is worth a trip to the lower floor if only to see the diorama from all angles. And a nice gift shop. Then grab lunch or snack at Larkey Market a half block away, then back to the park to eat and play.

i love lindsay

By Emily S |

if you love animals than you will love Lindsay. they have an education program that goes out to schools and does programs at Lindsay as well. they also have lots of cool animals, most of which are unable to survive in the wild. they have a hospital where you can bring injured animals also. i cant say enough about this place. i am especially in love with the porcupine and the birds, though. great place for kids as well as adults

Quality Organization Filling An Important Role

By Brett F |

Cannot say enough about this excellent organization and the service they provide to this area in terms of rescuing and rehabilitating wild animals. They also provide excellent education. We are members. My wife has volunteered there. We have brought wounded birds there. What would we do if Lindsay was not there?

Great for kids

By Snakewrangler |

Not that expensive and has a really neat interactive bird rescue section. It's not a huge place but enough to entertain the kids.

Up Close & Personal with Raptors!

By Jean B |

This is a unique nature center. . .the oldest wildlife rehabilitation center in the nation. You can view the operating room and learn about animal surgeries.
Their experts will introduce you to their resident eagle, great horned owl, and other raptors. Other animals include a gray fox. . .and who knows what others may be there for your visit!
Children can experience what its like to be a hawk flying over the surrounding hills and ridges with an interactive flight exhibit.

A place to take the children

By reise-tanta-di |

My children always loved Lindsay Wildlife Museum. We have many fond memories from this museum. Now I am taking my small grandchildren there. The bird exhibit is a big learning experience. They are also delighted in carefully petting some of the small animals there. Grandparents - become a member - your children and grandchildren will love it. Please help support this worthwhile organization. Once they saved a sick squirrel from our garden. We brought it in, they nursed it back in shape and released it back in our garden. What a wonderful staff.

Great museum to visit, see, and learn about wild animals

By Randall B |

What a wonderful place to take kids (or adults!). They do wonderful things here, doing their best to save and rescue injured/abandoned animals, as well as teach people about the problems of trying to domesticate wild animals. Look for the terrific LIVE owls. If you are there at the right time you can even watch the vets at work checking or repairing animals in the hospital. Worth every penny of the not-very-expensive admission charge.

Wonderful learning experience for myself and granddaughter.

By cplum |

I didn't expect how LWM has changed (definitely for the good) over the years. The live animals were a treat to watch, the information on display about them was well thought out and presented, the play area for children kept her busy and happy as well. The guides working there were informative and engaging answering many, many questions. Definitely take your camera(s)

Gem in Walnut Creek

Just a great little place to take the kids. Also a wonderful location for injured native animals. They have an awesome hospital and staff.

Lindsay wildlife museum

By Sandiel48 |

This is a wonderful place to go to see animals that have been rescued and given a better life. They offer classes and camps for children to learn more about caring properly for the wildlife of the bay area. There is an animal hospital also for helping wounded animals to be released back to nature.

Love the Owls

By The Total Package |

Entry is free to everyone on the third Friday of the month, so I took advantage. This is a small museum and the main attraction are the large birds - owls, hawks, falcons and ravens. The museum staff and volunteers are very knowledgeable and haelpful and their presentations are geared towards the young people. I saw a snake and some lizards. Outside there is a large cage with a turkey gulches inside. I'm glad I went and I like the work they do here.

Great rainy day activity

By Dan O |

I grew up in Walnut Creek so I've been going to Lindsay for a long time. (I turned 50 5 years ago; you do the math) It's a great quick trip on a rainy day or when you don't know what to do on an afternoon with the kids. The volunteers are great and knowledgeable. After they've gone once, the kids want to go back when you ask, "Hey guys, wanna go to Lindsay this afternoon?". Good alternative to a movie. Have fun and encourage questions.

Saving Wildlife

By ReddyBro |

Wonderful place doing really good work saving wildlife and educating adults and children
about the importance of all living things. The owls alone are worth the trip. Hospital
demonstration impressed all ages. We were able to pet a bunny and a gopher snake
during our visit but that varies depending on the available animals. Their goal is to always
rehabilitate and release back to the wild. Small fee was worth every cent.

Totally a very cool place!

By Shelly A |

Lindsay is fun for all ages. Exhibits and live animals.Always something interesting to take a look at. You never know what you will discover at Lindsay's. Larkey Park is next door so bring a picnic and make it a day. There is a pool at Larkey Park as well.

Amazing place that's fun for all ages! A real GEM in Walnut Creek!

By Angelinaxoxo89 |

This was an amazing find. The Lindsay Wildlife Museum is one of the oldest and largest rehabilitation centers in the US, and the very oldest in California. They host and exhibit a variety of animals that host more than 50 species of live, non-releasable, native California animals. It is truly an amazing place and I highly recommend this unique and affordable experience that helps contribute to treat the 5,000 injured and orphaned wild animals that are treated here each year!

With your visit, the best medical and husbandry care is provided to regional wild animals in need. Care takes place on site at the museum's wildlife hospital and off site at the homes of trained volunteers. Approximately 350 volunteers donate 60,000 hours of service in the hospital each year!

While we were there, we watched a beautiful golden eagle take a shower, we pet snakes and hamsters, we watched bees buzz, opossums eat, owls hoot, and hawks watch our every movement! They also have a small area for children to play that looks like a tree trunk, an area where you can look under a microscope at feathers, an area where you can pretend to fly like an eagle! There are different actives that happen every half-hour, and near the end of the museum's day they allow you to watch some of what happens in the hospital.

The animal that was in the exhibit room was a small hawk that required to be tube-fed because it's crop was severely damaged and would have starved without help. They have to feed this hawk a small amount about every hour or two until it's crop starts to heal, and hopefully it will recover and later be released. It was very interesting to see a glimpse of what happens on a daily basis in the animal hospital.

I would highly recommend this museum- it's a great cross between a zoo and a natural history museum, and they are doing wonderful things with the entrance fees to promote conservation and wildlife awareness, as well as protection and rehabilitation of our surrounding wildlife. This place is amazing!!

Great Museum!

By Ann W |

What a great museum for kids and adults. Fascinating and informative. Would highly recommend for a day trip in Walnut Creek.

Very Cool place to take a Nature Lover

By Chris K |

Our whole family enjoyed this visit from our preschooler on up to Grandpa. They have live animal showings and being able to see the rescued birds of prey is awesome.

Pro Tip: If you are traveling from another metro area and are a museum member check if they are part of the ASTC Passport Program for free admission.

Pro Tip: There is a nice playground around the side. Took the kiddos there and they burnt off some energy.

Wonderful and fun

By GMKhalsa |

Great opportunity to get close to many native animals. Many birds of prey species; eagles, hawks, owls, vultures & more. I know it's for kids but still found it noisy. Porcupine and possum were cool to see. Many other activities and things for kids to do.

Close up Views of Raptors, Porcupine, and other interesting animals

By Alan I |

We took our teenage grandkids there in January. We enjoyed seeing and touching the porcupine. We also had close-up views of hawks, eagles, and other raptors. It was a great outing.

Very hands on

By legsbell |

I took my two year old granddaughter and she loved every minute. The museum is definitely geared for a hands on experience. The soaring like a bird action video was great even for a two year old. She also liked the what do the animal eat kiosk.

Lindsay Museum worth seeing

By Rick M |

We have taken our grandkids to the Lindsay Wildlife Museum on several occasions and found it to be engrossing to them and us! The animals and birds are shown in interesting, educational ways and docents give helpful commentaries and presentations. The museum now offers brief tours of the 'hospital' side of the place, where wounded animals receive treatment, as well. Good experience for kids and grown-ups!

Great place for kids.

By yououttaknow |

Lots of educational programs and different animals displayed up close and personal through out the day. Great way to get the kids used to a small "museum" setting before attempting anything larger. They also have a wildlife hospital and take in injured native animals. Always call first to see if they will accept whatever bird or animal you have.

Lindsay wildlife museum

By specialklb29 |

Cool place took kids 5, 8, 13 spent about an hour there but it was rainy outside so there outside activities were moved inside. Would be fun on a warm day to see animals outdoors.

Worth Visiting

By Rachelle V |

Take your children to this well known museum. They also care for wounded animals and are so accepting of helping to nurture the critters back to their natural lifestyle. So worth it!

Good for elementary age and younger

By alohakai925 |

I live near by so I went over when they had a free admission day.
There are cool live wild animals who cannot live in the wild any longer due to an injury. You can watch the vets and vet techs in action. You can see birds on display. There are interactive discovery rooms for kids.
Downstairs is a bit dry in the exhibit department.
Love the gift shop. Great books for all ages, even adults, plus cool science and wildlife puzzles and other things.
Don't plan to stay all day, but it makes a nice couple hours of discovery.

Informative Fun for the Family

By Marilyn G |

Visiting Lindsay Wildlife Museum checks off all of the boxes parents/grandparents/caregivers require to combine fun, facts and information. There is parking directly in front of the museum; however, if it is full no worries, as across the street there is plenty of parking or on the street. There is an elevator should you require that service. The owls above the display area are the biggest treat as at first you are not certain if they are alive or stuffed until they move their heads! There are many presentations with the birds and the kids can sit so close to them and the employees engage in fact sharing with the children/audience. One fun thing to do is try to find the queen bee in the plexiglass 'hive' with her white dot! Another interactive fun time is the soaring over the hills. The child tips their hands (over a sensor) and it simulates them in flight. There is a viewing room/presentation where the employee shares what goes on in the hospital with rescue animals (located right next door for injured animals). There is a large room where the children can run around and play/discover. Restrooms are easily accessible and very clean. There are plenty of chairs etc for rest areas within the building. The small gift shop is perfect as there are prices for everyone from a few dollars to double digits. Bring a picnic or snacks and right outside the door of the museum is a wonderful park with two separate play structure areas. If your children like to play in the sand make sure to bring the sand toys. There are tennis courts directly across the street should you want to hit a few balls. This is a delightful corner of the Walnut Creek area. Up a few houses is a very well stocked small store where you can pickup beverages/snacks. Spend a few of the most well spent time here with your family while at the same time helping the museum care for injured animals.

Great Learning Experience for kids

By Mark W |

We were pleasantly surprised to find out when we arrived on Friday that admission was free the 3rd Friday of the month. There are hands on displays and live demonstrations that keep school age children occupied.

Lindsay Wildlife Museum is so fun to wander around and see all the beautiful animals, birds and all. Don't think it will be a short trip - you can lose track of time in there looking at everything.

A leader in its class

By BEM124 |

Our family has been to many nature centers, children's museums, natural history museums, etc. This one far exceeded my expectations. It was a small size but packed with exhibits and activities. I'd say it's probably best for kids 10 and under, although as an adult I enjoyed it as well. Our kids' favorites were flying like a hawk and watching the rats (if I remember correctly) crawl through their tube over our heads. We were there for a "Mini Monday" event and the kids also loved the craft and activity tables. This special event for kids 5 and under is very worthwhile. I loved that the museum was small enough that I could keep an eye on two kids at once, and the staff was plentiful and attentive as well. Thank you for a wonderful morning!

The kids loved it ! !

By TaireY |

It was very clean and had a lot of information . Larky Park is right there , so the kids can run and play after, great to bring lunch and enjoy the day!

Support this important place!

By Lovetobehomeagain |

This is a great place to educate kids, see some local animals, and play in the park afterwards. Best for young children (up to age 8?). Teens can apply to work as helpers. Lindsey is a valuable resource for the community, it is a great organization. It is located in Larkey Park which has lots of green area, barbeques, and a few playgrounds. There is also a train museum (open during limited times) and a pool in the summer. Weekends are full of birthday parties so reserve ahead of time if you have a large group.

Wonderful showcase of local wildlife for young children

By TJWilliamsDanville |

Our family has been a member of the Lindsay Wildlife Museum for under a year, after hearing so much about it from friends. And indeed, you couldn't find another place with so many people (paid staff and volunteers) dedicated to the humane showcasing of local wild life (I particularly like all the owls, and the single bald eagle). There is also a large playroom with wildlife themed toys and puzzles (those most are in need of replacement due to heavy use).

There are doting docents, hanging about, just jumping at the chance for anyone - I mean anyone - just waiting for the to ask them a question about their beloved animals. Most importantly, I've heard countless stories of how they've taken in and taken care of hurt wildlife.

Our toddler asks to come here specifically, and a trip isn't complete without a visit to Larkey Park next door.

Animals best friend

By Bellabegood |

On two separate times my loving cats and puppies decided to bring me home gifts from the wild still alive. I found this place simply because an injuried animal from the wild needs love to. We had to take a baby bird and a rodent to hopefully be saved. Sadly the baby bird passed away and the rodent well lets just say I didnt want to know out of sheer sadness my animals instincts were acted upon. Its a worthy organization that by far needs more exposure...it even has tours for children and lets face it much more educational and important then Disney...oh did I add more affordable to. Give this place a chance you wont be disappointed unless your to high maintenance for its humble existance.

Grandson Activity

By Charlotte A |

Great place for adults and kids. Always something educational going on. Nice collection of wildlife on display, owls, eagles and a wonderful little fox. Very good place for a few hours of grandson visit. They do very good work in the community.

Fun place to visit

By LisaandRod93013 |

My hubby and I came here for the first time and enjoyed learning more about the Lindsay Wildlife Museum Center and seeing the wildlife in person. The wildlife talks were also awesome to listen to during our visit. The staff members were nice and friendly as well.

Awesome Museum

By Cindy Chen |

I loved traveling to this place. There was so much to see, and I loved every minute of it. So much wildlife. I would say that the best thing that I did here was to touch a porcupine.

Raptors and more

By Jeff M |

A nice place to get up close with a variety of live raptor species, including various hawks, eagles and owls. Most of these birds have some disability meaning they stay in the care of Lindsay indefinitely. The displays for many of these include the backstory as to how the bird initially arrived here, a nice touch.

Seeing the birds during feeding or flight training is most interesting so check the event schedule so you have the opportunity to see some of these birds in action.

Many of the birds are out and sitting on perches above other display cases (see the many photos), these are live birds, but you might think they're stuffed at first, because they are pretty calm and still.

There are some other live animals on display besides the raptors, including an opossum, an anteater, some lizards and spiders. In addition, there is a working animal hospital associated with the museum and you can see into one of the exam rooms.

Lindsay museum

By Elena S |

My husband and I visited the museum since we had never been there. It was most interesting seeing the animals in a natural setting. We wished we had taken the grand children. Very informative on the habits and habitation of various snakes, etc. They also will answer questions if you have an animal invasion on your property such as skunks etc. They catch and release. They do not harm the animal. Very humane.

pleasantly surprised !

By mamatojulien |

I think I enjoyed this more than my son... seriously, but then he saw the bee display. Loved how they had them coming through the outside wall into the display hive!
Loved the tethered birds. Barn owls always get me! So pretty! Love the black raven tossing around his mouse, and the staff very helpful!

Great for animal lovers

By EdwinaSueClark |

My daughter, granddaughter and I have become members we like this place so much! Wonderful place for children, even very young children. Hands-on learning experiences for kids of all ages. We visit often.

Stopped in to waste some time, interesting

By Loz0404 |

Stopped by because we had some time on our hand from traveling. They charged $25 for 3 adults (two adults, one 15 y/o). They had 5 different type of falcons that were not in cages. They were injured so they could not fly or be returned to the wild. There were also 5 different Owls and a Road Runner to view. They had many different areas and interactive activities for little ones. We enjoyed it. Thought the price was a little high, but we understand that they need the money to help take care and rehabilitate the animals. All in all it was a good place to stop by and check out. If you got little ones definitely take them to check it out!

Terrific nature exhibits for kids and adults alike

By BarclaySanDiego |

Situated in a beautiful park surrounded by upscale residences, just a couple of miles from shops and restaurants in Pleasant Hill (Walnut Creek's downtown is further south), the museum features wildlife of the immediate area, with an emphasis on birds of all sorts, especially raptors. Docents present programs through the day, including an excellent one on how the museum's veterinarians attend to injured wildlife of all sorts brought in by the public. There's a public pool in the adjacent park and a super model railroad exhibit in its own clubhouse (fee).

SEE WILDLIFE FIRSTHAND

By CJSTBG |

Fantastic place to see wild animals firsthand. Excellent exhibits for all ages, particularly well done for children. A lot of good information: staff well trained and knowledgeable. Likes the bald eagle best!

Birds of a Feather

By bb0314 |

This was on my list of things to do for 5+ years. I finally went last Saturday and was impressed by the facility and the staff. They have expertise with raptors and it was fascinating to see them in a viewable habitat and to see 'Sentinel' the 25 year old bald eagle. I also appreciated hearing from the veterinary staff who take care of the birds as well as 'non-birds' and the inured wild animals brought to them by the public. This is a wonderful educational resource for us and our kids as well as a nice, modern facility that the area can be pround of. The exhibits are first rate and you will enjoy going there.

Perfect for Kids & Field Trips

By Ally G |

I have been here over the years as a kindergarten teacher in the area - this is a perfect field trip for students to learn about local wildlife and the care of injured animals.
I also brought my daughter here - she very much enjoyed the exhibits and live animals.
It is what you make it - it's not at video game speed - must slow down and be alert & attentive to be engaged and it's a great experience.

Lindsay Wildlife experiences.

By 429BobW13 |

Used to take my sons here a lot when they were smaller. They, and I, always enjoyed the exhibits and the friendly staff. It was our goto place to kill an afternoon.

By Alisa H |

If you love birds, don't miss this. Sensational. My nephew and I stared at the owls and hawks for over an hour. I didn't want to leave. The hospital presentation brought tears to my eyes, and I realized a hummingbird my cat maimed could have been saved had I known to drive it here and leave it in their care. If I were a philanthropist, I'd donate bank to this sanctuary.

Great family place

By Misterdon |

This museum is really amazing. Live raptors and other animal almost within reach, but safely out of range. Other animals up close and a great demonstration program.

Fun for little ones!

By Jan B |

We took our three year old grandson one afternoon. He enjoyed the interactive area where there were stuffed animals and little carriers to put them in the most. There was also veterinary tools like a stethoscope etc. Which he thoroughly enjoyed. Unfortunately we missed the porcupine out of the enclosure.

Free entrance with rescued animal

By AthenaJacq |

We have a habit of rescuing local wildlife that gets injured. I’ve brought in countless animals over the last 3 decades and they have always been an amazing contact for that. The educational center is such an amazing asset as a local mother, and homeschool teacher. Wonderful staff is kind, gentle with children, and have a great way of spinning even the negative questions and comments from kids into the positive to find the educational piece.

Not your usual museum.

By Clint L |

This is more an educational and wildlife rescue establishment than a museum. Our grandkids beg to return. They do live demonstrations of animal surgery with good camera coverage. Kids get to pet a snake. We've had one grandchild do a class there. It is adjacent to a park with picnic facilities so we take our lunch when the weather permits. It easy for elders to wait in a pleasant spot.

Great for family and school field trips!

By byebartelson |

Great introduction to animals surroundings in our community. Kids learn how to treat animals and their habitats.

A "must see" for anyone visiting Walnut Creek

By BillyTraveler |

The museum is a gem and provides a rare opportunity to see to learn about and interact with wildlife. Well staffed by a largely volunteer, dedicated workforce.

By CritterSaver |

This is an excellent place to see the native wildlife up close. There is a live collection and a window to wildlife exhibit to learn about what goes on in the wildlife hospital on site. It is a great way to spend an afternoon for a small fee.

Rare view into a wildlife medical clinic

By LLori |

We spent a perfect afternoon at the Lindsay Wildlife Museum and enjoyed the daily demonstration of staff handling an injured bird dropped off by a member of the public. The demonstration was a quick window into how vets can help and inspiring for any kid at heart. My favorite were the live birds on the entry level, especially the owls. The size of the Wildlife Museum is appropriate for those with short attention spans. The location can't be beat, as an excellent park nearby can work wonders on shaking the sillies out.

If you have a membership to any museum or zoo, see if they are in the reciprocal network.

The kids LOVE it

By Ron Y |

Bring the kids to learn to appreciate and respect nature and animals. A must trip for the youth. Be sure to say help to the turkey vulture.

Wildlife Close at Hand

By Denise K |

This small site is great for encountering and learning about wild animals from the area. Rescues come in regularly and you can meet owls and other animals. The people are knowledgeable but it isn't preachy like some museums. You can relax and enjoy while learning a little.

Worth a Visit

By TundraJayco |

I nice place dedicated to the protection of wildlife. Not fancy or large but interesting for kids and all animal lovers. We try to visit each time we are in the area to support the good work they do.

great place for kids!

By Jsuh |

My kids (7 and 9 years old) loved this place. there are many wild animals and most of them were rescued from your neighborhood. The education program was good and you can watch closely and even touch some of the animals under supervision and guide. My kids loved owls, especially!!

Nice wildlife rescue

By David J |

First and foremost this is a rescue. I think they indicated over 2000 this year! Live animals to view as well as some stuffed exhibits. The birds were really interesting perched up on high displays.

A great afternoon with Grandkids

Lindsay Museum has been one of my granddaughter's favorite places to go since she was 7-8 (now 12). The educational experience is wonderful for children - well adults too. Don't miss the talks when they have them..the with owls was just amazing.

Great wildlife place

By FredN47 |

Fun place to go in walnut creek to view local animals.
I like the raptor display. Fun to walk around and see everything.

Love this place

Nothing better then seeing our native wildlife and suppprting an agency that saves them at the same time! People work tirelessly to save animals that people bring in that are injured or sick!

The Best Day Out Around

By Mariah B |

If you've been to Lindsay before, go back because you will not believe all of the fabulous new interactive exhibits! This place is amazing because it's incredibly interesting and fun for adults sans kids AND for children of all ages. Live animals (who cannot be returned to the wild) are on display along with informative stories about nature around us. Interpretive guides answer questions and bring out animals for extra presentations, and there is also a great gift shop. You really cannot go wrong by visiting this wonderful place no matter who is accompanying you that day.

Great Grand Kid Experience

By Bill H |

We had taken our kids to Lindsay many times as they were growing up and now we've taken two of our grand kids (ages 7 and 4). Terrific learning experience for them, and the new facility is a great improvement over the old Museum. Lots of hands-on learning and the kids are still raving about Lindsay.

The Lindsay is the best!

By Lynne M |

We have been going to Lindsay Wildlife Museum for almost 20 years now and each time it is such a joy! The staff provides oustanding care for the animals and are so friendly and welcoming! Membership is the way to go so you can stop by anytime you like.

A Fantastic Place for Big and Little Kids!

By Neanna M |

When my own now grown children were teenagers, they worked here behind the scenes at the Lindsay Wildlife Museum, cleaning hundreds of animal cages and taking care of the animals on R&R from the public that they had brought to our home for rest. Thus, the museum played a very special part in their upbringing as they learned about the animals they cared for and the other important skills involved with volunteer work. But this place is not really a museum at all! It is a place in our community where injured animals are skillfully cared for and either released back into the wild, if possible, or are used to teach the public. Every aspect of the place is intensely interactive. Each visit will bring a new discovery because the museum is constantly changing. There are displays and special areas for all age levels. And when the children have had enough of the indoors, there is a first-rate play area just outside the museum.

Grandkids' Delight!

By Gil G |

This is a great beginning spot to introduce young children to ecology, science, and animals in general. My out-of town grandkids always ask if we could go there.

Took my grandchildren to the Lindsay and they had a blast. Probably like the birds of prey the most. Fascinated with the Owls and of course the Eagle. Fun Staff member kept it light and made it rewarding for the kids. Can't wait to go again.

Good for children

It's an amazing museum to go with kids! I took a 3 years old and a baby there and they had so much fun there. There are a lot of exotic animals there!

A Sparkling Gem in Walnut Creek

By Operagal94553 |

I have lived and worked in Walnut Creek area for many years and had never visited this museum. This was a family visit and we were able to be there in time to see the animal care hospital presentation. The workers provided medical attention to 2 baby squirrels who were brought in that morning. A superior volunteer described in detail everything we saw. He talked about the mission of the museum and the volume of animals they rescue, treat and release each year. The regular exhibits were outstanding and staffed with well-trained docents anxious to talk about the animals, their habitat, life cycle and why they cannot be returned to the wild. We really enjoyed seeing Topaz the magnificent Golden Eagle. I highly recommend to all parents of young children to visit this museum and learn about the animals who share the urban environment with us. Fascinating educational experience for everyone. My husband was so enthusiastic he bought a membership for the entire family.

Great Place for a Young Mind

By Michelle B |

My son wanted to go there every Friday since he was 2 years old. Each time we went, he found something new to explore. We even went on the days they had special animal exhibits. We still talk about the vulture outside. It's a shame they got rid of the house and replaced it with a puzzle and activity area. We enjoyed finding the stuffed animals and where they live in houses. I've taken my four kids there and sadly, two birds who didn't make it. It's a great place to see wild life up close and it's amazing what they do to help!

Invaluable Asset for the Commuity

By Bruce and Valer... H |

Lindsay Wildlife Museum and Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital is a true gem for Walnut Creek and the bay area. Not only does the museum house a collection of indigenous wildlife (all injured and unreleasable in the wild) but the Rehab Hospital provides a priceless service for the community.
It is a place where you can bring injured, indigenous wildlife and they will treat and release at no cost to the public. Wonderful place to visit, learn, and volunteer. Kids love the museum and there are many programs for adults as well.

Lindsey Wildlife Museum

By Gary S |

Without a doubt, the Lindsay Wildlife Museum is the top museum of its kind in the Bay Area. Almost 50 years old, this non-profit organization leads the way in wildlife interpretation and wildlife rescue and rehabilitation. Literally hundreds of birds and small animals are helped each year.
Several raptors and mammals that were rescued and rehabilitated in the Museum's hospital, but cannot be released in to the wild are on view. ,
Its exhibits are well suited for young as well as mature visitors. Interpretive guides are on duty to make the wild come alive.
The museum has a handsome facility located in Walnut Creek's Larkey Park, just outside the downtown area. The gift shop is well worth a look.

Great palce to take the kids

By DD19351 |

I have been going for over 35 years my dad use to take me. This is still a fun place easy to get too easy parking and fun for all. As a kid used to hang out there my dad best friend used to work there so i would get the inside tour.

Educational for everyone

By Audrey R |

The docents are very knowledgable about the animals. Every time we've visited we learned something new about the animals there.
Fascinating details about everyday wildlife in the area.

Love this place!

By JovielSeattle |

Every town should have a Gem like this! Been around forever and was my childhood favorite hangout! Way back when you could take a skunk for a walk in the local park! Great people run and volunteer here, dedicated to the care and wisdom sharing of our fellow creatures big and small. Animal loving kid's dream space to explore!

Great for children of all ages

By Pam H |

I took my great granddaughter here (7 years old) and she loved it. Saw soo many birds.
Loved the information from the workers. It's fun and educational.

Interesting comination museum-wildlife rehab center

By dsimberloff |

This is an unusual and very good attraction focused on local California species (especially birds, but also reptiles, amphibians, and mammals), beautifully set up for children but with much of interest to adults, including close-up interactions with rehabilitators, and lots of live raptors.

Kids love it

By Michelle L |

I've been bringing my children here for over ten years and they all have loved it. Through the years we have seen a coyote, a mountain lion, a fox, and many smaller animals and lots of raptors.

A warm fizzy feeling all over

By Darrell P |

This is a wonderful place to bring the whole family rain or shine. You will observe live rescued animals most of which will now live a full life safe and sound. The staff will teach you things that you never knew.

Photo opportunity you cannot miss!

By Andy L |

Great place to snap photos of birds and other animal up close and personal. Wonderful staff and great carding environment for non-releaseable animals.

Indoor family fun

By ShannaBanana8 |

When the weather turns bad this is a great place to let the kids run aground and explore when the weather is fine the docents offer outdoor show and tell of the museums residents!

Wild Animals

By Pat K |

This is a great place to take your kids or grandkids to learn about the local wildlife and the rehabilitation of injured animals from the area.

By DaddyBlue |

I was very impressed by the enthusiasm of the staff and volunteers of this little gem of a museum in Walnut Creek, CA. Museum is not really a good word to describe this place because of it contradicts what they do.

Visitors, young and old, will get a first hand view of wild exotic birds in this museum. I was surprised to see that the wild raptors on top of the exhibits were actually alive. They ranged from owls to the wonderful Bald Eagle.

The staff and volunteers actually engage in the rehabilitation and rejuvenation of the animals they showcase. Each animal has been saved from a physical and/or psychological incident. This gives all of them their unique character and stories. Half of the facility is actually a hospital which treats and releases animals back into the wild if possible.

The LWM is actually a small place but a great big park with play structures surround the place. The $7 entry is well spent knowing that your money is going to the rehabilitation and preservation of native wild animals.

Fascinating! Perfect for children!

By Me-MyHusband |

This is a new favorite haunt with our grandchildren (ages 5 to 9). We love the exhibits, all of the information, the live animals, the teaching medical clinic, the shows. I sometimes wish it were bigger but, in truth, the size is perfect for the children.

Great little wildlife museum.

By BedlamPro |

This is a great little place to visit and possible volunteer. Most of the animals when I was there were Owls, however they have a few other animals native to California. There was a very active Virginia Opossum wandering around it's enclosure. They have an excellent mountain diorama of several taxidermy animals. Also, while I was visiting there was a great art exhibit down in the basement.

By Paulo R |

It really deserves more than 5 stars because the place has many beautiful animals, the staff is so nice, as well. My son learnt a lot with the presentations, videos, interactions, and so on. The owls are awesome, there's no place like that with so beautiful creatures.

Wonderful Wildlife Museum!! Highly recommend.

By nevadaq |

This is one of the best places in the area to view birds and other wildlife. I highly recommend spending a few hours here, either with a school or as a family. It's highly worthwhile.

Great place for children and adults!

By bharrisrn |

Up close and personal educational opportunity for the whole family. In addition to the museum's Lindsay Wildlife Experience they offer many special events and naturalist led local excursions. Their rehabilitation hospital is the first and largest wildlife rehabilitation center in the United States. I brought in an injured animal at the advice of a friend and left being a lifetime supporter of their mission.

Great fun!

By daljulie |

My daughter & I took her toddler daughter here. She had a blast! Petting the giant bears, touching a snake, simulating flying like a hawk, crawling around inside the "tree", hearing the mountain lion sounds (pushing buttons!) & of course the terrific gift shop :) she was very unhappy when it was time to leave. After 2 hours! And we never even made it outside to the park! Take the whole family.

a great place for children

By Tessitori |

Went to the museum with my daughter and some of her classmates to find the docents extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic. I was expecting a little more depth to the exhibits but the enthusiasm and knowledge of the staff overcame this shortcoming.

An excellent educational museum for locals.

By Mehrnoush S |

This is not a zoo! It is a small size museum with a mission that is great only to be a member. Ticket is not worth for one time visit. But, it is perfect for families with small children. They rescue wild local animals and teach the kids by letting them interact with animals while listening to the information. It is small but you get to see close up so many wild animals. The museum is small but very clean, well-staffed and equipped. The gift shop is so much fun for kids to just play with some exciting animal toys.

A hidden treasure.

Welcome to Lindsay Wildlife Museum. This gem is a must for all ages. Wonderful programs, interactive exhibits, a animals of all kinds. We have also brought injured wildlife and happily welcomed by staff. Wonderful play ground in the park. Not to be missed.

Interesting for children and adults who like wild animals. This rescue and education center is a great resource for the community as well as visitors.

Day with grandsons- Animal Heaven!

By dweiss77 |

Our grandsons ask to visit Lindsay every time they visit! They live the hawks and the bald eagle. The docents do such a great job talking with kids and providing hands-on time with animals. We are happy to be members and support this important wildlife center. As the boys get older they can take in so much more, including the rehabilitation hospital. Now wherever we go they are more aware of their natural world and pride themselves on sighting hawks, turkey vultures and many more. Thanks Lindsay!!

A rare treat for kids and families

By Susanog2015 |

The Lindsay Museum is a unique way to experience wildlife that is being rehabilitated before being returned to their natural habitats. It is small enough to get up close to the creature (behind glass) and usually not crowed so it is easy to ask questions to helpful docents. The park adjacent is a great way to spend family time, picnicing or kite flying. Then visit the museum and let the kids play with the interactive exhibits, and watch the birds of prey being feed, or the snakes.

Awesome back to nature experience and good family adventure- Best part were the owls up close and out of cages - WOW!!!

sweet for those with pre-schoolers or early Elementary

By TravelwKids4 |

very small place which we found made it nice when our kids were quite young. We had a membership and came fairly frequently. Had a birthday party/class that was nice, but too regulated - we decided birthday parties should allow kids to be a bit wild. There's a park/playground right outside to let out the energy.

By CSkuza |

Highly recommend this place to take your children, the staff is friendly and well informed

Native animals of our Bay Area

For a fun, educational outing for families with kids, visit the Lindsay Museum. Many live critters to meet and observe. Variety of educational lectures, with some hands-on petting opportunities, too.

I become a member

By reise-tanta-di |

It is well worth supporting this wildlife museum. My youngest grandchild and I spent a few hours there in the middle of the week. We were able to see, through glass and TV, the room where they receive and treat injured animals. It was very informative and the guide was good. We will return.

Fun for kids 2 to 102

By mgh2020 |

Lindsay Wildlife Museum is located in Walnut Creek, conveniently located next to a large and very pleasant family park suitable for play and picnics. The museum itself is a journey through the natural history and wildlife the Mt. Diablo area. It is also a rescue refuge for wounded animals that can rehabilitate here and give the folks a chance to see them close up. I brought my kids here when they were small and now bringing a two year old grandson. He especially liked the road runner. They have workshops and educational opportunities and you can come as often as you like with an annual membership which is reasonably priced especially for families.

Fantastic gem of the East Bay

A great resource for families. Hands-on displays and attentive, informed staff answer children's questions carefully and in ways that foster further interest. Beautiful facility!

Excellent experience for children

By erc1 |

The animals are well displayed and the staff's descriptions in presentations are very well done. The animal hospital demonstrations are particularly interesting.

nice people, beautiful rescued animals, educational and fun for the kids (although we are child free adults and we loved it!) Will be visiting again soon. Coupons for admission discount often available I use Chinook book

Special place for local animals and those who care about them

By Donalamo |

We Grandparents accompanied our almost 3year old granddaughter here recently. We were impressed with the exhibits, docents, animals and educational mission of the Museum. They care for a huge number of wildlife from the area each year. We saw a demonstration in the clinic (through a one way window) of a small garden snake. Remarkable. There are hands on exhibits and we even got the chance to pet a porcupine! It is a small place with a big heart. A good place for us to learn to care about “all creatures great and small.”
Then we went to play at the park, just outside the Museum.
A great visit!

Nice outing for families and children

By SHERYL K R |

We've taken our grandkids here several times. Sometimes the waiting for feedings and other special events has seemed long and seating very limited. The wildlife and the staff are worth waiting for, however.

Great for Kids

By CheapLeap |

The live in the open Bald Eagles and Hawks were amazing to be so close up to them in doors without them being in an enclosure

Great animal rehab hospital!

By br776533 |

Lindsay Wildlife Experience (as it is now called) is a wonderful opportunity to visit "up-close" with animals that are native to the area. The museum is very hands on, the museum interpreters are quite informative, and the animals are kept in a well cared for environment. The summer months offer a variety of family orientated activities good for all ages.

By margaretEll |

The LIndsay Museum is a wonderful place for kids to visit and learn about wildlife. It is also great for kids and adults to serve as part of the organization. They can teach others, they can care for the animals. They can attend classes to learn. This is an ideal place to involve your child in a rewarding activity that may influence her/his life work.

Great place for all ages

By 6565Danville_Ca |

This museum is small, but their exhibits are great and the speakers are very knowledgeable. They are great with kids and patiently answer all questions.
They help save all sick and injured animals from the local areas.

Relaxed animal education

By RetroFan |

This little museum is near a beautiful park with walking paths and playgrounds. We first encountered a turkey vulture outside and the gal answered questions about her. Going inside, we enjoyed the exhibits explaining various features of raptors. The best part, of course, is the live animals on display. Some are behind glass and some are perched majestically above that. Wow! The back story of each animal is there along with fun facts. This museum is doing a wonderful service for injured animals and educating the public at the same time.

Excellent Place for Kids and actually their parents can have fun too

By Top_Ramen1 |

My son went there for the first time to attend a birthday party - was a cool idea. Have been there since a couple of times - very nice small place and the kids love the animals that are there. It is a surprise since they have a snake which the kids can actually pet. Super exciting for them. The eagle exhibit is great too.

Lovely place worth a visit - and unexpected. the volunteers are great too. Awesome.

Local Wildlife Museum

By suzannahMT |

Excellent museum to bring the kids to, has a great selection of local wildlife. They take in injured animals and only keep the ones that cannot be reintroduced to the wild. We've brought injured animals we've found to these folks for years for treatment.

Great place to visit with young kids

By sgregory2017 |

Just the right size for a first museum visit. The live animals are captivating and the are some hands on things to do with younger kids as well. Located in a park, you can combine the museum visit with outdoor play for a fun afternoon.

Local Wildlife Education

By CaNative07 |

I love that this place exists. It's one thing to go to a zoo and see animals you'll likely never encounter in your life, but the Lindsay Museum focuses on the wildlife all around us in the Mt. Diablo valley. All the animals (with few exceptions) are alive and unable to live in the wild. All those hawks you see perched on light poles? Yep, they have them there. It's a small facility, but they offer lots of educational opportunities for kids, including summer day camps. My daughter can't wait until she's old enough to be a camp assistant.
If your family likes to visit scientific museums, you might want to consider a family membership to the Lindsay. Their price is very affordable, and gets you access to the reciprocal benefits of lots of other zoos and museums in the Bay Area, and across the country. We've gotten 1/2 price and free admission to different facilities on the East Coast, and when we get an urge to visit the Oakland Zoo, it's nice to know it will be free (except for parking).

This place is awesome. Great for kids and interesting for adults. Many animals to see, my favorite is Richard the turkey vulture she, yes Richard is a she, is outside in her huge cage. She loves to look at people, as much as they like to look at her. Be careful, don't put your fingers in her cage, she bites !
Also lots of programs for kids

Great for all ages!

By AmyW2348 |

My daughter and I decided to walk to the museum from our hotel. It was really interesting how they care for injured animals and send them back into the wild, if possible. The animals that end up staying at the museum seem to be taken care of and spoiled a little, which is a good thing! People of all ages were there visiting. A nice place to get out of the sun for bit.

My son loves this place

By Michael L |

This is a wonderful place to bring kids of all ages. It's more than a museum - but also a hospital for sick or injured animals. I particularly like that every half hour or so they bring out an animal (golden eagle, snake, owl) and tell the children about them and let them get up close to them. It's a great place to spend the entire day, as it's adjacent to a large park.

My son loves this place so much that we go there pretty much every weekend (so I recommend becoming a member if you like your first visit!).
