My wife and I have been to Little Finland several times and it never gets old. We have gone down with groups of side-by-side UTV enthusists. The combination of trails through sand, dirt and rock keeps it interesting and the rock formations at Little Finland are amazing. We take lunches and hike through the area exploring. We have also ranged down to the shores of Lake Mead from this area. We will be back.

Most visitors will take a vehicle 9 miles each way onto the gravel access road. However, this road has deep gravel in some spots. I believe a front drive only SUV would probably do okay on the road, but I wouldn't be 100% sure. (Months earlier my son and I attempted to ride the access road on REI brand mountain bikes but found areas of deep gravel that we couldn't ride the bikes on. There is no cell phone service in the area and traffic is infrequent. My son and I chose to park our vehicle right before the access road and walk about 3.3 miles along the road until we came to petroglyphs where we then left the road for a walk of about 2.2 miles to the Little Finland Rock Formations across the desert, some of it on what looked like trails and some of it on hard rock surface where previous foot traffic leaves no trace. So, if you are not going to drive any part of the access road figure on an 11 mile trip roundtrip. Before you get to the Little Finland access road you drive about 30 miles from US 95 on roads that vary between dirt, pavement and pavement with lots of potholes. Any vehicle can handle those rides, but figure on slow going, especially at night when you will see dozen of rabbits on the road and possibly larger animals.
If you have a four wheel drive vehicle this is a very different place to visit and well worthwhile if you do not mind spending a lot of time driving.

This is a neat spot that experiences little in the way of visitors. There are access spots on both the east and west sides with the west my preference if you only have time for one. Little Finland is located 115 miles from Las Vegas and the round trip driving time is just over 5 hours.

We love this trip and the scenery on the way. The road required high-clearance and 4x4, but your picnic will be is a place with views of the high dessert in all directions. Lots of pictograms to discover and very interesting geology.

SUV's or 4X4 trucks are a plus while traveling Gold Butte Road to Little Finland.
Bring plenty of snacks, gas and make sure your vehicle is in proper working order. No Services for 50 miles. Going in spring time is a must to truly enjoy the desert. I t comes to life and everything is in bloom.

This place was a bit difficult to drive to, but once we arrived, it was a short walk up a hill into another world. These formations are magnificent and totally worth the drive. We had never seen anything like it and there were only a few other visitors so we were able to take pictures and explore. Everything here is so fragile, so I hope it stays somewhat isolated to protect it from too many tourists.

Little Finland is in the Gold Butte National Monument. The off road to get there is challenging. Be prepared/plan, and review the trails and roads via the internet before you journey out there. Navigation can be tricky at some areas. City GPS will not work. There are 3 off road trails to Little Finland. Also, several side attractions along the way: Whitney Pockets, The Cistern, and Devil's Throat. Once you make it to Little Finland, you'll be rewarded with a short hike to amazing delicate Sandstone formations. It's an all day adventure so best to start early. This place is remote: no restrooms, no food, no water. Take in what you need to survive on, and take out what you discard: "Leave no Trace". There's a camp site where the paved portion of New Gold Butte road ends. No fees involved at this point. This is one of the newest BLM Natioinal Monuments designated Dec 2016.

Everything about gold butte is majestic. Bring your camera, lots of water and protection from the sun. A four wheel drive vehicle is a good way to go but many of the sights can be accessed with two wheel drive. A little ground clearance is recommended.

This ride is off the beaten path but worth the effort. I recommend high clearance vehicle for those unexpected ruts in the road. Landscape is beautiful!

Amazing rock formations. Some moderate hiking necessary. Far away enough from town that you won't see much traffic. Go early in the morning or in the fall or spring to avoid the heat. Don't go following recent rains. 4X4 a plus, high clearance vehicle a necessity. No entrance fee. No services, fill your gas tank and bring plenty of water and food.

Little Finland is a truly unbelievable place in Nevada close to town Mesquite.
The formations you will see there are very unique and should be every photographer's dream to see them.
The road to Little Finland is paved only about half of all distance and then becomes gravel.
The last portion requires SUV preferably 4WD because it is very sandy road and it is very easy to get stuck.

Very beautiful place. You need a 4x4. At nighttime wind blows strong. Must have a plenty of water, and food and extra 5gallon fuel tank.

Beautiful, long drive in 4x4, but worth the time. Don't forget your camera. The rocks have fins formed from wind etc. Be very careful not to break off any of the fine fins!

You will need a four-wheel drive, a map, and a camera. This place is beautiful beyond words. Gold Butte definitely needs to be granted National Monument status.

Drive a rugged vehicle and take plenty of water and a camera!
This geologic wonder is about 40 miles from Mesquite NV, in
the Gold Butte area. Hard to locate without a GPS. This area is
not on tourist maps because there are no services and poor
cellphone reception. Go early to avoid the heat of the day.
Follow all rules of desert travel and tell somebody where you are going and when you plan to be back.
All that said, this is an astounding place that is a wonder of nature.
Treat it as a priceless treasure.

After a long, rough, backcountry roadway you'll be mesmerized by the rock formations that comprise Little Finland. Where the name originated will become clear when see the fins. Lots of beautiful "goblins" and "rock creatures" to hike among. This area becomes all the more beautiful at sunset. An unforgettable Nevada experience.

Little Finland is located within the Gold Butte National Monument located between Lake Mead and Mesquite, Nevada. It is located 109 miles from Las Vegas with excellent roads for the first 73 miles, then 30 miles of poorly paved roadway that is easily passable for any auto followed by the last 6 miles where high clearance is recommended and 4wd might be necessary at times. It is a desert area and all desert precautions should be observed in case of experiencing problems, i.e.carry plenty of water and food but fuel should not be an issue. Virtually the whole monument is open to camping for extended visits.
Little Finland has amazing rock formations and the Monument has many other interesting formations and hiking trails. I highly encourage anyone contemplating travel in this area to check the BLM website before heading out there.
