Great place for families

By travelsnob12 |

My Husband and I went to Madaket beach for an afternoon and had a great time. The beach is definitely targeted for families with a lot of young children running around, it's big enough where it's not overwhelming. Saying that, if you're looking for the laid back beach experience, go to Nobadeer where you can drive your cars on the sand and chill out with an older crowd. Another great part abt Madeket is Millie's for tacos and margaritas!

Beautiful beach with a bonus

By sonseekers |

This is a beautiful beach and it has the bonus that it is next to Millies. Now you have 2 reasons to head out here!

Another wonderful beach on Nantucket...

By STULETSEAT |

Every beach we visited on Nantucket was wonderful. Madakat with location on one of the tips was awesome.

Madeket beach

By Sandy F |

Nice beach but small...water was rough but it was a nice bike ride from town. It was a little crowded because of the small size...worth the trip

Great beach

By Fred C |

Great beach, good fishing, nice sunsets. Surf and currents can be rough, beware. It can be windy and foggy on this side of the island. Nantucket has about 78 miles of public sand beach more than twice as much as the state of Maine and the water is much warmer.

Pristine! Sunset spectacular!

By Travelingover50 |

We deliberately saved this beach for last so that we could catch the magnificent sun set! The beach was powdery sand soft and we enjoyed swimming in the clean water and lying about on the beach while we waited for sun set! We were not disappointed!

Visit for awesome sunset dinner at Millie's!

By Sunshine7310 |

Beautiful place to view the sunset and waves on the ocean, especially while you eat and drink at Millie's.

FISH

By fishdude s |

Great spot at sunset to catch blue fish and bass (depends on time of year)

A Different Side of the Island

By RCAtchisson |

MAdaket seems like it is a world a way from Nantucket proper. Just ten or so miles from town, it might as well be in a different country. The beaches in June were by and large empty. Seals played in the water just yards off shore. A young family played with their dog. Even a few brave souls attempted to swim in the cold, cold water. Yet another beautiful and unique brush stroke on the canvass that is Nantucket.

Perfect for sunset!

By Lisa |

I had read it was perfect for sunset and it certainly was. Even in November. Even saw a seal popping his head in and out of the water.

Crashing Waves

By P T |

Be sure to visit this side of the island. We were very glad we went. You should go before it disappears into the sea.

Best sunsets!

By Mary W |

I love Madaket beach! Every night we would drive to watch the sunset. Every evening, another beautiful sunset. There is a small parking lot with free parking, bring your picnic basket and blanket and have some drinks and snacks. The perfect ending after a perfect day in the sun at Madaket beach:) Great for the whole family.

Madaket Beach

By Meg F |

Absolutely amazing sunsets at Madaket. Bring a blanket, bottle of wine, and enjoy! Afterwards, grab dinner and some margaritas at Millie's!

Fog 30% of the time

By Megan A |

We came out from the town by bus to see the sunset- unfortunately it was soooo foggy that a couple near us lost there dog for an hour. We asked a local and they said it is foggy enough to obscure the sunset 30% of the time. So check the weather report before you go!

Beautiful

By Mary M |

Rode bikes out that way and it was just stunninginly beautiful. Went in the fall so didn't sunbathe or do the water thing. But just looked at the waterfront was so beautiful. Remote and doesn't appear it gets very crowded.

Beautiful Nantucket beach"

By DianeSpector |

We rode bikes from town to Madaket. It was a very nice ride on paved bike trails. There are benches along the way if you need to stop. It's about a 5 mile ride, mostly flat with few small hills. The beach is beautiful!

Beautiful

By Travel Savvy Diva |

A wonderful beach with beautiful soft sand, we didn't have great weather but was still worth a visit.

The second best place on nantucket after Great Point

By ryecapital |

The weather gods have repaired Smith Point to perfection . You can drive almost all the way to Tuckernuck Island now . Massive stretches of beach all to yourself but go to very end to watch the rip between the point and Tuckernuck ( its many miles drive but sand not as soft as Great Point so easier for newbies )

Bring a pole .... tends to be some bluefish or something feeding .

When my kids got sick of the party scene at Nobadeer , Smith Point became our new go-to spot .

Nice beach 25$ chair rentals

By Steakeater45 |

We took the bus out there for a few hours. The little store charged me 25$ each for beach rentals. There was a ramp down to beach which was a little steep. The beach was nice with a great view.

Great Beach

By blumre |

Possibly the best thing about this beach is that Millie's is right there. The other incredible thing is that just a short bike ride or walk away is access to smith's point which is possible the most gorgeous beach on Nantucket.

Nice bike ride

By Eric E |

Our family of 4 really enjoyed the bike ride from Nantucket Town, about 5 miles on a terrific and well-maintained bikepath. Once there, walk on the beach past the surf-grass and gray-and-white "cottages" (luxurious homes). Have a bloody mary at Millie's in Madaket.

Peaceful

By monnie377 |

We took the WAVE out here so we could see a different part of the island. We didn't walk far from the bus stop to the beach area. The waves are strong so I image it is a bit rough to go swimming. Very serene and peaceful as there was no one else at the beach that day.

A Restored Beach

By Jerry R |

Madaket Beach has been badly damaged by erosion over the years, and about three years ago had to be moved 100 feet with a new parking lot with a walkway access. Madaket is one of the best places on the Island for great sunsets, and is only a few minutes away from a very popular dining spot, Millie's.

Beautiful Beach on Nantucket

By Donna L |

Gorgeous beach with great waves and room to walk. We were fortunate to rent a house here never having visited before and were really pleased with the beautiful, serene setting.

Beautiful

By Joseph8484 |

One of New England's best beaches, pristine waters, soft white sand, and plenty of space to be away from the crowds. Watch out for big surf if you catch in on the right day. Definitely take a bike from town, the countryside of Nantucket is beautiful.

Great bike ride destination

By Dan F |

Walked around the beach, saw birds and seals. Lots of fun. They had BIKE racks to lock you bike to. The beach was flat and easy to do. If you are handicap DO NOT do it.

You need to watch the sunset here!

By nhtravelgirl03 |

We rented bikes and headed out to madaket. We loved it so much we went here twice during the weekend! Once in the afternoon and another time to watch the sunset. Simply stunning!

Beautiful beach, and beautiful bike ride to get there

By TomChatt |

Its a beautiful and easy bike ride from Nantucket town to Madaket Beach, mostly on dedicated bike trails going by ponds and coastal grassland. The beach itself is beautiful, nice sand, some surf but not too large, very clean sand and water. There was a lifeguard near the entry area, but you needn't walk too far if you want to get away from the crowd. We saw seals swimming in the surf just off shore. A place called Millie's, just before you get to the beach, has a great lunch and possibly the best lobster roll I had in 10 days around the Cape Cod area.

Vast, mostly empty beach, nearby restaurant

By Waldensis |

This is one of the better beaches, there's plenty of space and it's often pretty empty. There's a nearby restaurant with decent food and drinks. Bus to and from town if you don't have a car.

Good Place for Surf and Sunsets

By Douglas T |

First, I need to say that I am not a beach person. However, we bought sandwiches at Something Natural and caught the bus ($2) to Madaket Beach. We ate lunch on the sand watching and listening to the largest surf we have seen on Nantucket. There were many families out and it was a nice day. This was the only place we have seen any waves that vaguely resembled California surf on the island (but we did not go to Surfside or CIsco). We walked around after lunch, going to the far western portion, where you can go to the beach on the Nantucket sound side, where there is no surf at all and it is ideal for children, kayaking and surfboarding. The houses in Madaket are not as grand as many place on Nantucket, and the yards and flowers much less prevalent. Honestly, it is a good place to see a sunset, or go into the ocean where you can body surf and catch a wave, but not much else.

Beautiful to walk even in winter

By Genny164 |

I went for a nice walk here as the sun was setting. This is the best place to see a sunset. You must be very cautious of the surf here. It is open ocean and very strong. Parents should be careful with young children. I never swim here as there is so much debris in the water. I was actually with someone who I warned and she got hit in the leg by a three foot piece of metal from a street sign. Driven with the force of the waves behind it, it can be a bad place to swim. The beach itself is gorgeous. Go and walk it and enjoy the sunsets.

Great views, clean ocean and sand. convenient snack stand (Millie's) nearby

By Ray T |

IF you find yourself on Nantucket Island and you are looking for a nice clean beach that isn't swamped with tourists, take the extra drive or bike ride out to the southwestern corner of the island where you will find Madaket beach. The sand is clean, but facing the open ocean the surf is rough. There are lifeguards on duty

Madaket Beach Nantucket at Sunset...Get therre Early :}}}}}}}

Great beach and sunsets

By 759juliettesc |

Amazing surf and sunsets! Not to be misssed..dont forget to visit Millies for a bite to eat too..Yum!

Sunset!

By Angie711 |

Be sure to watch the sunset here....take a sweater though. Stop by MIllie's afterwards for great eats! They have large portions and great service in a casual atmosphere.

Best sunsets at Madaket Beach!

By dcalianno |

We drove out to Madaket Beach to see the sunset. It was about a 30 minute drive from the ferry terminal. It is the perfect spot to see the sunset.

There is limited parking and many people park along the road. Millie’s is a good Mexican restaurant located nearby.

Many people bring chairs, food and drinks to celebrate the sunset. I highly recommend checking out this beach.

Sunsets

By P Brian S |

The place on the entire island for the best sunsets. Beautiful!! While you're making the trip west, why not stop in at Millie's for a burrito and a cocktail!?

Big waves

By SuLouWill |

We enjoyed going for the long bike ride to this beach. The waves are often very large and this time we only had one surfer to watch.

A spot of paradise

By Lauren B |

Great beach vibe. Beautiful sunset. Ample space. Small parking lot with a portapotty. A little bit of trash washed up on the shore.

Grab A Bike Then Take A Dip

By Jun Jacinto |

You can go here by local bus(infront of Whaling Museum) or by bike with a good exercise to begin with before taking a dip to a nice cold water and play the waves.

Millie's

By Carpenter10 |

Quiet restaurant & bar on the other side of island. Very good place to eat. We took the shuttle bus from town over to the restaurant.

great sunsets, make sure to hit Millie's before

By joyandlaughter1 |

Beautiful beach, not the best for swimming in especially for small children. Go to Millies for a margarita, tacos or a mystery drink before heading to the beach

Great beach for older kids .. surf to strong for young kids ..

By calyx910 |

Great beach for older kids .. surf to strong for young kids .. one of our favorite beaches .. never gets too crowded. Lifeguards on duty but be careful the rip tides are strong here at times. Millies is a very short walk down the street and the sunsets here are amazing .. if nothing else come here to view the sunset with a nice glass of wine

Great spot for a Sunset

By slungo |

About a 6 mile bike ride from town. Rolling gentle bike path most of the way. With the ride on the right night.

Worth a long bike ride

By Anna P |

During a recent trip to Nantucket, we rented bikes and rode here. It's worth the trip. The beach is beautiful, serene, and sparsely populated. Due to a passing tropical storm, the waves were huge while we were here. It was a great sight. Skip the tchotchke shops in town and visit this beach instead.

Be aware of the surf on this beautiful beach

By Genny164 |

If there is no lifeguard, be aware of the tides here. They can have rip currents. My mother has been pulled out of this water before. The waves are strong. That being said, it is 8 miles from town. Bike path goes right to it. Restrooms are port a johns. Convenience store and restaurant right there as well. Shuttle service in season. Beautiful water to walk along toward Smiths point. Swimming is nice if the tides are right and you can get in safely.

gorgeous scenic beach

By jrleary423 |

absolutely gorgeous beach that was completely desolate in March which really added to its beauty, even in the cold it was worth a short walk. Feels so serene.

Impressive surf and seals!

By albanywanderer |

Because we were there in the middle of October there were very few people there which was lovely. We were not interested in swimming, just walking on the beach and watching the surf. It is a beautiful spot...we saw a number of seals which was just wonderful.

The beach is good!

By vperli |

The beach is good but it is a place far from downtown.
You need to drive.
I took a boat and went to the other side to know an island called "Tuckernuck".

Amazing sunsets

By SNC0893 |

Pet-friendly spot to enjoy beautiful sunsets. The WAVE transit bus takes you there from downtown (and other stops enroute) and is also pet friendly!

Nice, but..

By Chuly26 |

Not as nice as the rest of the Island, the busride was good, but
is a little far, and not much to see.

Beautiful, limited facilities however.

By Robert S |

Fairly wide beach, long stretch to walk. Only one restaurant nearby, Millies, but I would recommend it. No lifeguards, the water can be a but rough bit certainly can wade in to cool off. Saw one seal - no great whites however!

Nice waves, beautiful dunes & sunsets

By Jenster8 |

We rode bikes out from town to check out the beach. The sand is a bit rocky and shell-y, but the dunes, surf, and sunset are lovely. We decided to ride back to town, and come right back out on the WAVE shuttle with beach chairs and towels to wait out the afternoon for the sunset. One of our favorite days on the island!

Be sure to stop in to Millie's while you're there for some great beach food, too.

Portapotties???

By Elizabeth S |

No place to change clothes or rinse off. Four portapotties in a row. Loud and clear message that unless you rent or own property nearby, you aren't wanted.

I live their

By David B |

Not very crowded, rough waves if you have smaller children. Seals passing most of the day. Stay late and see the Madaket sunset. Easy parking, and Millies for lunch.

stunning sunsets!

By hadashi |

look, i'm biased with my 5 stars but i make no apology. this is the beach of many happy memories, and there is a good reason why.
when i was a kid i never understood why people thought Nantucket was such a fancy place to go. all i knew was that my uncle & aunt had a place there forever and that was where all the Chans went over the summer if you didn't want to wait until Christmas to see your peeps. we'd go clamming and crabbing and feed the ducks...and of course go to the beach. and this is the one, because it's walking distance from the house.
i get it now as a quasi-adult why people get all woo-woo when i say i'm going to Nantucket, but Madaket is so far away from Nantucket Town and/or 'Sconset -- both literally and figuratively -- that i'm happy that's where my peeps ended up all those years ago. sure, it's a drive (or solid bike ride) from Town, but it's well worth it. parking, even during peak times in summer, isn't awful, and because the public beach is right next to a "private" beach (where the residents go), everyone spreads out and it never feels crazy crowded. the water always feels so good, and curious seals will come check you out. sometimes the waves can get a little wild, but even on many windy days, the water will be relatively calm.
the best part of course is the SUNSETS...even this longtime Los Angeles-dweller, who has seen many a splendid beach sunset, has been totally and utterly WOWed by the sunsets at Madaket Beach. watching a fiery orb slowly descend below the watery horizon, turning the sky all colors and bathing the sand in a golden glow, is an experience you need to have if you've made it all the way out to Nantucket, let alone all the way out to Madaket. i will say it again: DO NOT MISS THE SUNSET HERE. (disclaimer: weather permitting!)
Millie's is right down the street so you can easily grab some grub and make it a sunset dinner picnic if you want to, if you are not lucky enough to have Chinese aunties who have already prepared some kind of seafood feast for you wrapped in aluminum foil. see, many happy memories. just go.

Had A Nice Walk Here

By Babz J |

After eating at Millie's, we decided to walk off our food on this beach. It wasn't crowded and appeared clean.

Great spot if you can get there

By NewEnglandGoodLife |

Madaket beach is a serene and remote beach on the western end of the island. We got there by rental bike. It was about 14 miles round trip. We took the Cliff Road bike path to the Madaket Rd bike path to get there, and returned entirely along the Madaket path.

There’s a well known store for provisions nearby, Millie’s, which has anything you might need if you forget. There are portapotties at the beach and bike racks.

It would be a tough beach with young kids as there are no formal facilities. But older kids and adults would enjoy it.

Prettiest beach on the island!

By Sheri M |

This beach is so clean and nice... an absolutely beautiful stretch of beach! It's a little bit of a drive from town, but it's worth it! We did it on a scooter, and it was so fun!

Greatest sunsets on island

By Kalina M |

Madaket is a great beach to go to, especially at the end of a long day. You could go for a long walk along the shore or just sit and enjoy the sunset, both are really good.

Best sunsets and waves!

By Lynda S |

Nature at it's best! Bring a sweater or jacket as it can be windy. The most beautiful sunsets and great for photos. Bring a beach chair and watch as the day is done!

Exquisite sunsets!

By Lisa F |

While Madaket is a beautiful beach at any time of day, it's the most popular for its exquisite sunsets! Get there at least a half hour before sunset (you'll be amazed how fast the sun can sizzle below the horizon!) and plan on staying at least a half hour after the sun sets. Some of the best color displays happen after the sun sinks into the ocean. Many families bring dinner and drinks while waiting for the sun to go down, which is very often followed by a grateful applause at nature's colorful gift.

Disappointing

By Kathy P |

Perhaps I am spoiled by southern beaches but you drive down a narrow, very rutted dirt road to get to the beach. You park along the road (no parking lot), there are no bathrooms, no showers, absolutely nothing but the beach. Mother Nature has done her job and it is pretty there and the place to go for sunset but be sure to bring everything you may want/need because you won't find anything out there.

Heaven on Earth

By Stacey S |

Beautiful beach with easy access.
Other beaches on the Island are more family oriented -
Madaket is more remote, tends to be a bit quieter and is a bit smaller.

Awesome sunsets

By Naomi S |

Lots of waves. There are life guards, but current is strong. Port-a-potty's and parking lot. Nearby restaurant -- Millies, but no restaurant on the beach.

Walk along the waterfront

By Sherpa177694 |

Great spot. At sunset it is breathtaking. During the day you can walk either way for over a mile.
Stop before or afterwards at Millie's for a snack - great salad and quesadillas. Big enough to share. Washed down with a beer or G&T.
Clear weather is best, but can also be magical in the sea mist.

Best Sunset on the island

By Robert W |

There are a lot of great sun set views on Nantucket but this one is my favorite, Its also just a fun beach to spend the day.

Best beach

By PiggyMarcello4 |

This was the most exquisite beach on Nantucket. Nice at any time of day. We rode bicycles to get there.

LIke most ACK beaches

By jcnenglish |

Like most ACK beaches, .ong and sandy, with lifeguards. Restaurant nearby is (and remains) a big plus.

beautiful beach, a lot of erosion though

By dmmahoney9 |

we enjoyed this beach day, the beach is stunning but eroding, what a shame... huge waves and riptides so be careful, I'd pick a different beach if I had small kids

Best Sunsets on Island

By All_Points_Images |

Madaket Beach is accessible by a variety of means - though the best is by driving to the end of Smiths Point. Be sure to tip your hat to the Crooked House as you pass on the right... Madaket is the best place to go surf casting at the end of a day and just to enjoy the sun setting.

Beautiful Sunset

By acimeow |

We were here to view the sunset on a chilly June evening. The beach is clean and sunset view was wonderful. Took the bus from town (20 minute ride), and got a bite at Millie's before the sun went down. What a perfect day, and one more reason to return to Nantucket.

Lovely beach, not sure how to get down from the public parking.

By Rosemary S |

At the end of a nice bike trail, we drove as we still had the jeep. Can see evidence of some of the beach erosion that has happened.

Greatest Sunsets on Nantucket

By All_Points_Images |

Aside from amazing beaches and fishing for blues and striped bass, this is a great place for amazing sunsets

Beach Walk

By Timsnapper |

Taken to Madaket Beach for a pre-lunch stroll we very much enjoyed the remoteness of this soft white sanded beach. Locals come to this beach to fish and picnic driving their 4 Wheel Drive vehicles on to the soft sand, however IF you do this remember to lower the air pressure in your tyres by several degrees to avoid getting stuck. Whilst we were there it was fairly empty, however I am sure that during the summer months it is more crowded, however as it so large I’m sure that there would be space for everyone! I am not sure how safe the swimming is on this beach so take local advice. There is a more sheltered area where locals keep dinghies and kayaks which might be suitable for swimming, after a walk here head to Millie’s Restaurant just nearby for a Mexican lunch!

Great waves, but Parking is limited

By Naomi S |

Beautiful beach and sunsets. Lots of waves. Port a potties are available and life guards. Accessible by the madaket bus, which was great. Went to Millies for an early dinner before the sunset.

Beautiful sunset -- and it's free!

By Vicki K |

madaket Beach has the best sunset on the Island. People pay a fortune to go the Galley Restaurant to see the sunset, but at Madaket Beach, you get the roaring Atlantic surf, sandy beach and beautiful sunset, all for free. Take a picnic and a bottle of wine and enjoy!

Best Sunset on ACK

By Tara M |

Great place to sit on the beach and watch the sunset. We had a great night here. We brought our chairs, a bottle of wine and just relaxed. We got some great pictures.

Sunset

By robertmM4838NU |

Absolutely gorgeous! I am a west coast girl so I have been missing my sunsets. The sunset on this beach was beautiful!

Our favorite beach

By _tsdifiore1 |

Though out of town, worth trying on the west end of the island...sunrise to sunsets always great biking and beach. Easy trolley ride into town as well. Sunsets are incredible

Worth discovering

By ajmmd |

Great find for walking a warm sheltered beach with extraordinary views and outstanding vistas. Eat first at Millie's and enjoy what Nantucket has to offer...peaceful surf and sand

Big waves

By NolaBola2008 |

Ver nice beach but the waves are big and strong so need to be very careful. Probably not good fora novice swimmer

Beautiful Beach

By Joanne V |

My only regret about Madaket is that it was way too rough to go swimming. This is a beautiful beach and it's a stop on the Wave transit system which is nice. The day we went red flags were up all over the place. The waves were huge and crashing right near the surf line. The lifeguards were not letting anyone in over their knees and were blowing their whistles the entire time we were there. The water was gorgeous and warm. Not certain if the surf is typically on the rough side since this was our first visit here. I would recommend going here even if you just sit on the beach and watch the waves.

Beautiful location for a sunset

By msh12205 |

We rented a Jeep Wrangler and drove it out to watch the sunset. Beautiful location and beautiful views

Beautiful and peaceful

By PattiMac |

Love this beach. Clean, peaceful, less crowded. Take the bus (wave) and get dropped off right near by. Big waves!!!

Great bike ride out to Madaket

By kaysandler |

The bike trails in Nantucket are wonderful. We took the trail out to Madaket on our 2nd day on the island. LOVED the trail, which was beautiful. Once you get to Madaket, there is really just the water and beach. There is one restaurant, Millie's, and a snack store. The restaurant is very expensive for getting a casual lunch. The snack store was perfect.

Windy but beautiful

By havaneserule |

Visited Madaket Beach in a blustery June day but it was still worth the Wave Bus trip to the eastern end of Nantucket. It is a lovely wide beach - with parking and porta-potties. Also has a small shop and restaurant nearby.

Bike trail to Madaket Beach

By mglassman22016 |

One way to spend a beautiful day in Nantucket is to rent a bike in town and ride the bike trail to Madaket Beach. Take a beach towel to sit on and watch the surf. It's not crowded and the sand is soft. There are bike racks and a clean Porto potty in the parking lot. You'll pass Millie's on the trail near the beach where you can buy a bottle of water in the general store or lunch in the restaurant.

At the edge of the world!

By Tina L |

Even an overcast day is something to be remembered! It is never packed, has plenty of room to spread out, relax, and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Don't miss seeing this beach!

By travelmissy4747 |

April is very cool, but we thought the view of the open ocean with huge rolling waves was spectacular! Worth renting the jeep just to see it.

Great beach - get takeout at Millie's

By Jill H |

We rode bikes from town last weekend. We stopped at Millie's for takeout quesadillas and drinks and enjoyed them on the beach. The weather then got bad so headed out earlier than expected, but it's not the beach's fault.

Our stay was here!

By Tammy D |

Breathtaking! Can't wait to return to this gorgeous, relaxing, historic, and all-around best destination to visit!

Stunning sunset

By MauiBoulder |

A bit out of the way, but well worth the trip! Stunning sunset after a tasty dinner at Millie's could be a perfect Nantucket evening

Madaket Beach Offers Beautiful Sunsets

By Cristina B |

In town for a wedding. The bride/groom rented a beautiful home, feet away from Madaket Beach. They hosted a beautiful Welcome Party/BBQ and it was topped off with a beautiful sunset on the beach. We all gathered on the beach to take in the sunset and it was beautiful, well worth watching.

Best beach for sunset!

By scarpinito |

Bike it out to Madaket, and make sure to have time for Millie's! This beach is just gorgeous, white soft sand under your feet and bluest blue water.

Best with a jeep

By Luke S |

We drove out to Madaket beach and watched the sun set one night and it was one of the most beautiful sites. Some of the widest most open beaches I have ever seen and a lot of shells to find.

Fun even on a cold day

By BostonMom333 |

We took the bus over to Madaket on a cold, overcast day. After a great meal at Millie's we went down to get a view of the beach. It wasn't until hours later that we finally left. The beach is beautiful and the sand is perfect for kids. We spent hours walking on the beach and burying the kids in the sand. Definitively worth a visit after a great meal at Millie's.

Best sunset in Natucket

By gojushiho |

As far as beaches go, it is a pretty straightforward gig. BUT....the sunset is spectacular and arguably the best on the island. Grab some wine, a blanket (and maybe a kite for the kids) and get there right before sunset. You will be glad you did!

One of the beaches where you can drive you 4x4.

By ManuLLosangeles |

Amazing beach where you are allowed to drive off-road, or even better, oversand. Keep driving all the way to the end of the tip, it's allowed, and watch the sunset. Unforgettable experience..... Go for it!

Breathtaking!

By HollyMAnderson |

There is nothing so relaxing as a book, a blanket, and a day by the sea. Cancel your appointment with the therapist. Hit this beach.

Beach not accessible!

By Ken B |

I am sure the beach is great - like most all on the island. However, we could not get down to the beach from the road or parking lot due to erosion and the stairs having been removed. Check before you go.

Come for the sunset!

By Lisa T |

What a beautiful beach to watch the sunset! My boyfriend and I went around 530 and hung out until the sunset, it was great! We took the bus from town ($2/person) and found a nice spot on the beach.
Highly recommend heading to Madaket for a great sunset, then go to Millie's for dinner, you won't be disappointed!

Favourite Nantucket beach

By Helen W |

We visited this beach day and night and it was the most charming on the island. The sunset was beautiful, and is the perfect way to end a dinner of tacos and cocktails at nearby Millie's. In the day, you'll see seals for the shoreline and pretty dunes. There's a lovely bike route from town to the beach which we loved.

Sunset

By Chris J |

Nothing better than heading out to Madaket to see one of the best sunsets on the earth, good thing is that there is one almost every night. Grab a couple bottles of wine, some beer from Cisco and find your spot on the beach. Key West is good but Madaket is the best.

Heavy surf

By Jean S |

When we recently visited the shuttles buses to Jetties beach weren't running yet for the summer, so I took the only other option to Madaket. It's a longish ride there and a short walk to the beach from the last bus stop. I remember coming here years ago when our children were small and being concerned about the intensity of the waves and surf. That would we my same concern with children even now. I just sat on the beach and read until the fog started to roll in. I'm more a Jetties Beach fan.

Surprised to find this!

By Jones102013 |

Really cool place - take a jeep and drive out here! Great views, sprawling beach, quiet, peaceful and just a cool place to experience.

Great for the sunset!

By Alexandra J L |

Awesome place to see the sunset! If I remember correctly, it's a little far off, especially if you don't have a car!

Beautiful beach

By happy1012 |

Great short bike ride from town to beautiful beach. Delicious fruit smoothies from Millie's market at the beach

The typical NANTUCKET Atlantic ocean beach is a sub section of the of the long strip of silica starting in the south-west of the island and sweeping 26M-42KM to the north-east tip. As such they tend to be open, rather featureless beaches, stretching off towards the horizon (or the next beach) each end with no defining headlands, and backed by low grass-covered dunes. Width from the high tide mark to the dunes tends to wax and wane both over distance and over time (due to storm wave attack). These beaches don’t light my fire (I’m a beach blogger with over 3 million hits, visited thousands of beaches over the years) but they are not unpleasant either – I tend to rate them AVERAGE (2 TripAdvisor roundels).
MADAKET is towards the western end of this long strip and is pretty typical, except for one advantage, ASPECT. It faces south-west and enjoys great sunsets over the sea (except for maybe around the summer solstice when the sun is at its most northerly extent) This aspect had the rather cool and strong NORTH EASTERLY winds at my time of visit blowing directly off the shore, making for smooth seas and warmer conditions than on more exposed beaches. Due to this favourable aspect I have given MADAKET an extra roundel – rating it ABOVE AVERAGE compared to other beaches I visited along this long strip.

MORE ON THE BEACH
- despite the late hour (I’m a sunset tragic) there was still a good crowd of people due to the sheltered conditions
- readers’ pix show width and gradient tend to vary over time: my visit saw plenty of the former and a moderate gradient.
- sand was the typical yellow-grey-brown. Dirtied up at access points. There was and a bit of weed at the high tide mark and a fair number of pebbles/shell fragments all over.
- this beach has lifeguards. The surf was very benign my visit, but the aspect makes it very exposed to Atlantic storm waves. Readers’ pix show big surf which leads to rip currents. Keep a close eye on your kids – they can get into trouble so quickly. If so, don’t try to rescue them – too many people drown trying to save family. Alert the lifeguards who have rescue and surf skills.
If YOU get caught in a rip current and are exhausted simply tread water (minimal effort activity) and let it carry you out the back. Surfers use rips as an easy way to access the take-off zone. Even the biggest rips dissipate less than 200m off the sand. It’s nice out there and you will soon be noticed.
Don’t try to swim against a rip, you can’t.
If not exhausted swim sideways - rips are narrow.
- the car park behind the beach only has about 20 spaces. There are change sheds/showers/rest rooms but I didn’t notice any food concessions.
- there is an hourly shuttle bus from town: 40mins/$3.

A Nice Place to Bicycle To

By David G |

We biked out the Madaket beach. It was a beautiful place to see the ocean, and a nice bike trail out there from Nantucket town.

Great Place to Wander the Beach

By VrVxVyVa |

A beautiful Nantucket beach that encourages long wandering walks to take in the views from every vantage point, or just sit on the beach and enjoy it from wherever you may be.

Best sunset on Nantucket

By Michael M |

Madaket is the more quaint, old school section of the island. The beach itself is at the end of a beautiful drive or bike ride from town. The best way to enjoy Madaket beach is to purchase an over sand driving permit from the town and drive on. From here you can access a more private experience instead of fighting the crowds (access just opened at the end of July). There are pretty much no facilities so be prepared (when you drive on). Madaket provides a great vantage point to view the sunet while the kids jump in the waves.

Great waves

By bob g |

A clean beach with great waves and a nice restaurant nearby. Don't be surprised if you see seals coming out of the water in a secluded area. it is their beach too!

Can't beat the sunset view here!

By TracyAcc |

Great family beach, good wave action and a lifeguard. Public parking available for free. Expect a small crowd at sunset as the beach makes a perfect viewing spot.

away from the city

By deborah r |

it is almos secluded but it has a nice wide beach and of course the beautiful view of the water. the ride out is scenic and you get to see the island. well worth the trip.

Sunsets a must.

By caref |

Gorgeous sunsets, but take care swimming. There's a riptide that can be treacherous! The bike path out to Madaket is lovely, and there's a restaurant at the end as an incentive...

Wide open beach with amazing sunsets!

By ACKReader |

This great beach offers public parking (turn left just before end of Madaket Road to enter parking lot) and has the best sunsets on the island.

Smith Point beach finally open

By Robert S |

Closed due to erosion they said, but when finally opened the first two miles certainly were NOT eroded in any way that I could see. Beautiful beach. And by mid Sept, hardly anyone on it. No life guards here. Sometimes, sometimes, you can catch fish in the surf.

Nice beach.

By Beth W |

Clean beach, not many visitors the day we went. We saw several seals and the surf was relaxing. Would recommend visiting this beach.

Heavenly

By thedogColumbia_MO |

What a beautiful spot. How lucky we were to be invited to share the week with my SIL & her husband. Perfect weather. Water just cold enough to be refreshing. Lots of rocks entering the beach but okay once you're in the water. Not too crowded. Sun hot but breeze cool. Loved watching the seals at play. Gorgeous

Wonderful view!

By Jovana V |

If you visit Nantucket, make sure not to skip Madaket Beach. It`s beautiful, quiet, the waves are great and there is no better place to watch the sunset from!

Best Sunsets on Nantucket!

By rjverma |

Hands down one of the best places to watch the sunset on Nantucket. Grab some wine, a blanket and head out for an amazing view!

Beautiful sunset spot; great beach overall

By Sarah F |

I loved watching the beautiful sunset on Madaket. It was dog friendly, which my little puppy and I both appreciated. I loved that it wasn't rocky or covered in shells, so walking on the sand barefoot was pleasant (note Jetties beach had so many shells is hurt to walk barefoot). This beach is further away from the town, but well worth the visit.

Beautiful Madaket

By julestibbs |

Sand as far as you can see and not a soul in sight. Hired a bike to get here, sadly missed the sunset which is meant to be spectacular. There was a portaloo and bike racks but no cafe or refreshment outlet, there is one nearby but this was shut as out of season. The quietness and lack of people was a bonus in my book

Sunset hot spot!

By Jana I |

Get to Millie's before the crowds, drinks are fantastic! Then head to the beach for the final bow! By taking the public transportation you can arrive and depart back to town after the sunset quickly :)

Great for sunsets

By GMM0 |

Biked out to Madaet Beach. It's beautiful - remote part of the island, lots of dunes. Best place on the island for sunsets. If you go, get a drink/bite at Millie's so you can watch the surf and sun and relax.

fun afternoon visit

By thesandcastle |

I went to madaket beach for the first time this month. I drove out from town specifically to check out the beach and fit in a quick lunch at Millie's. Although it was cool
(high 60's, low 70's) we had a relaxing outing. Would definitely return!

best sunsets!!

By tjay s |

Nice quiet beach close by to home we were staying...off roading is possible here and the sunsets can not be beat!

Very quiet off season but picture-perfect views

By New_Month_New_Trip |

Got here by bicycle from downtown Nantucket. Ride out to Madaket tends to be a gradual uphill climb along a paved bike path. Unfortunately, the path is mostly inland among the trees so you miss the beautiful water views along the way. This beach however was beautiful and quiet (off season October) and worth the ride. Much different scenery than downtown Nantucket.

Beach

By tracy m |

We rented bikes from downtown historical district where we were staying and biked out to Madaket Beach. It was scenic and enjoyable. Not to long or too short of a ride.

By nowincolorado |

We read that Madaket Beach has world-famous sunsets so that is where we headed to! We found out sunset was at 6:03pm (in Oct) and got there at 5:45pm.

There is no parking lot and very few (maybe for 3 cars) parking spots on the side road. The beach is not within walking distance from town.

The sunset on the beach was beautiful! We took tons of photos as the sun was setting only to discover that the BEST views were AFTER the sunset not when the sun was setting! (Wish someone would have told us that!).

See the attached picture and see why the "after the sunset" is so beautiful - the sky was filled with all shades of colors!

Excellent experience!

beautiful...accessible...

By eyeu |

Took one of the Nantucket buses to the beach...Costs $2 each way..or $1 for seniors.
Drops you at the beach...just gorgeous...Clean..lots of people...some have arrived by car..some by bikes...just a terrific way to spend a summer afternoon.

Quiet Beach

By KL1471 |

Great beach but not much around as far as grabbing beverages or a snack. Took a bike ride out from town and nice little ride along bike paths.

You must go for sunset!

By christine L |

Sunset from this beach is spectacular. You can ride your bikes out with a picnic dinner and put your bikes on the bus to get back.

Worth the trip

By Mom02360 |

We took the shuttle bus for a sunset walk and were glad we did. The beach is great to walk on, crashing waves were fun to watch, and the sunset made the trip especially worthwhile.

Beautiful beach with clear blue waters and very active waves

By Maruta V |

A delightful experience, visiting Madaket Beach was a treat! Away from the tourist hordes in downtown, it is well worth the trip to the south side of the island. It's beautiful, peaceful, and there's plenty of space to relax and enjoy the booming surf. Added bonus: Millie's restaurant, bar, and market are just a short trot away, and offer all sorts of goodies and treats for beach goers.

Nice Bike Ride

By Paul D |

When we visited it was very rough. This was hardly a beach for beach activities and there was essentially no parking. However, it had tremendous natural beauty. It makes for a nice bike ride from town.

One of my favorite spots

By Lmurphy67 |

We walked here to see Mr. Rogers's house and eat dinner at Millie's. The ocean waves were mesmerizing. Beautiful sunset. Probably my favorite beach on Nantucket.

Best Beach on the Island

By Mark M |

Secluded, nice waves, beautiful sand, warm temperature. Long drive unless you live in Madaket, but well worth it.

Madaket sunsets

By Dee02554 |

Madaket beach has the most amazing sunsets , grab a bottle of wine some chees and a loaf of bead and your all set to be amazed . be sure to keep your eyes open for that green flash just as the sun hits the water

Can't beat the sunsets

By Lauren T |

Sure can be rough, so not really appropriate for little children. But definitely a great place to let them run on the beach at sunset...which you don't want to miss. Bring your beach chairs, sunset beverages and camera to catch the show and take selfies....

Heaven at the end of the island!

By janet f |

Beautiful, pristine beach. Took the WAVE TRANSPORTATION from town.....$2.00 rt, 15 min ride. Not heavily populated, quiet. Eat at MILLIES! 2 minute walk from the beach. Millie's is a must to end your day at Madaket!!

Best sunset!!

By AldenHop802 |

By far the best sunset viewing spot-and Millie's restaurant is a must apre sunset!!! Try and sit outside on the deck if possible. The WAVE bus goes out there which is great because parking can be a bit tight!!

Good beach on west side of the island.

By Allan B |

Esay to get to but has limited parking. large stretch having much room for sun bathers and swimmers. usually has life guard and has portable toilet facility. Waves vary depebding on tide and wathe. Some surfacing is possible.

Windy

By AHW676 |

Disclaimer that our trip was in October, past peak season. On the day that we went to Madaket Beach, it’s was insanely windy and there was not another soul on the beach. So at least during the off-season, don’t look for boardwalks or restaurants or lifeguards. It was still lovely, but hang on tightly to your hat!

Go to the north of Madaket (and to the east) for Eel Beach

By Rebecca |

We went out to Eel Beach with Nantucket Surfcasting (James) and had a great time. Caught a 36" Striped Bass from the shore. That was the only fish we caught the first day, but my boys loved is so much (ages 13-14) we rented poles and went back for a full day. 7-8 Blue Fish were caught that day, all 2' or more! What a great place to fish in the ocean!

Sunsets are a don't miss

By Ned Maguire |

Madaket is the western most point on Nantucket so they are always spectacular. The sandy beach is long and clean with nice waves most days. If you are driving a 4 wheeler you can drive out to the end of the point.

Beautiful views

By surfer6 |

Madaket is a lovely area and the beach, while crowded in the summer, is a no mans land in the off season and that's the time to go. Stroll for hours without seeing a soul. Heaven!

Sunset Beach

By Lolly’s Look |

Our group rented jeeps and stopped at Bartletts Farm for some picnic items. We packed our cooler with champagne and brought beach chairs. It was an easy walk over to thesmall beach. It was our last night on Nantucket and we toasted the trip with a beautiful sunset. It was the perfect end to our beautiful Nantucket visit

Want you be my neighbor

By Josh W |

Madaket Beach is a photographers dream location. Little sounds. Big sky. Beautiful landscape and cozy little beach cabins. Stay for the sunset.

Beautiful beach to visit, but no facilities

By J Scott B |

We took the Wave bus from downtown and about 20 minutes later arrived on this great isolated beach. Millies, the only place out there to eat, was closed (too bad), but the walk on the beach was delightful. Some people swimming, but being on the ocean side the surf and undertow are dangerous - be careful

HUGE WAVES-STRONG CURRENT-PERFECT DUNES!!!

By Nicholas J |

Stroll down a long winding beach path to the frothy blue water.
Place a blanket behing the high dunes and unwind..
Be prepared for high waves and some rip-tides..
Stay close to shore unless you are a strong swimmer.
Far away from the center of Nantucket..Bus available
But be cautious about taking children into water or alone..
Best for strolling and viewing the sandy dunes and seagrass.

Surf, food, parking, and seals

By Larry D |

The Madaket Beach is at the far western end of the island and easily accessed right at the end of the Madaket Rd. The road has a parallell bike/roller blade/ walking paved path so although it's six miles from town, the trip out is scenic and easy. Just shy of the beach is Millie's, a summertime restaurant with a side business of selling beach stuff, minor food, and bottles. Also ice cream. The beach itself has lifeguards on the shore and seals scenically patrolling just outside the surf line. Since we have a house in Madaket we are loyal to and especially fond of the Madaket Beach.

My favorite place on earth!

By virginiak811 |

Madaket is a popular beach on the west end of the island. Every day brings a different personality to the water and waves. Sunset is an event here, and for good reason.... outstanding views! Millie's Sandwich shop nearby if you need something to eat or forget your sunscreen. Taking the Wave from town is easy with the stop being fairly close to the beach.

Yearly Visitors for a Reason!

By Kind Traveler |

Our family adores Madaket Beach and we are lucky enough to visit every year. Madaket hosts the best sunset viewing on Nantucket, easily viewed from the comfort of Millie's Restaurant or the nearby beach. We have seen a great deal of dune erosion over the past several years, including a few houses slipping into the ocean. Every year we go it seems that the beach gets smaller and smaller. We will continue to enjoy all that Madaket has to offer while we can!

Favorite Nantucket Beach

By Johnny4Q |

This really is a great beach. It's never crowded. The surf is usually strong, but you can go to the bay side and swim in calmer waters. We rode our bikes here. It's a nice ride out, mostly on bike paths. There's a market & restaurant right down the street from the beach.

Wonderful beach!

By Familyli4 |

My wife and I took a taxi from the ferry terminal to Madaket Beach $22 and took public bus back $3 each. I would not recommend bicycling unless you are in shape. A lot of hills.

The beach is great. Beautiful sand and great waves. Not too strong.
Their are porter potties on site.
The highlight was the large seals that were swimming not too far from beach. The ride out to the beach was very scenic.
I would recommend.

The First Beach

By Leo D |

Madaket was the first beach that we visited on our motor bikes and enjoyed the surf and the space. The is a small restaurant which serves great beach food.

Sunset at Madaket

By Lauren K |

I highly recommend driving out to Madaket, at the western end of the island, to take in the sunset from the beach. The drive out rates a *10* all by itself, especially passing between Long Pond and North Head Long Pond, and then turning right on Ames Avenue and taking in the oft-photographed, weirdly wonderful house on stilts. Settle in for a spectacular show in the sky as the sun dips below the horizon and turns the whole sky shades of pink, orange and red. Then head back to Millie's (which you will have passed on your way to the beach) for cocktails and food from an interesting menu. Be warned, though, the acoustics are terrible, so it gets super noisy.

Ahhhhh New England

By Steve N |

Beautiful. Quaint . Simple. Peaceful
The quintessential New England beach experience . Soft sand, endless skyline , calm water

Huge Waves & Best Sunset

By KatieAndPatrick |

Best beach to go watch the sunset. It's a 10 drive from the center of town, so don't try to walk it if you're coming from over there. Huge Waves! Swim with caution!

Beautiful!

By Villager |

Awesome beach. Not overcrowded. Clean with great sand. Very easily accessible by the Wave public transit system. Small market and restaurant close to entrance. As far as northeast beaches go, it's not quite Cooper's Beach in Southampton, but it's not far behind.

NIRVANA

By TEC342 |

The beach is clean, quiet and serene. It was an easy ride on the Wave Transit. You can walk for miles and not see another person.

Swim at your own risk, but gorgeous surf and sunsets

By Genny164 |

If you want to watch the sunset, this is the beach to do it from. It is also a beach with the roughest water on the island. You can walk quite a distance all the way to Smith Point. Erosion and storm damage have taken quite a toll on the beach here and getting down to the water takes some ability to climb up and down without railings. I don't swim here anymore. My friend came out of the waves holding a long metal fragment that hit her and my mother got pulled out in the waves and needed a lifeguard before. It is still a beautiful beach and there is a restaurant, convenience store and bus stop within one block of the beach.

I may be alone in counting this as my favorite Nantucket beach, but ...

By Chris K |

... it just is. Not the widest beach, certainly. But it has a true end-of-the-road feeling, being that it's on the far southwest point of the island. Millie's restaurant and market are a short walk from the beach. Good food and drink -- a nice break from the sun, when needed. Though we didn't quite make it to sunset, on either visit, we could see how it would be treat. A do-able bike ride from Nantucket town. Nice big waves on both days we visited.

Don't miss sunset

By Ned Maguire |

Large sandy beach but limited parking so get there early. Sunset over the ocean is a must see. Fun beach for families with plenty of room and great sand for castle building.

Sandy and fun

By sailorgirl123 |

Lovely and sandy. Good beach for a stroll and a quick visit. All of Nantucket's beaches are wonderful and easily accessible. You will want to pack snacks and drinks.

Amazing Sunsets!

By More_2_See |

Went late one afternoon and stayed for the sunset. Got some amazing pictures! Beach is clean and sandy but the surf was a little rough for swimming on even a calm day. There was a lifeguard chair but no lifeguard while we were there. No facilities -- just port-a-potties and a small store and Millies restaurant a half-mile up the road.

Best beach

By Christina J |

Pros:
Beautiful 6.2 mile bike ride
Millie's restaurant was awesome!
Beautiful beach
Not a lot of people

Sunsets

By JayC |

This is the beast beach to watch the sunset. There is a bike trail from town or you can take the NRTA bus in season. Go to Millie's and have a casual dinner and watch a spectacular sunset from you table.

Pretty beach

By 841ann |

Best to have a car to reach this beach, but the drive is easy and scenic. Beach is immaculate and has plenty of parking. It's a great place for shelling and relaxing as it is quiet but not too secluded. It is just a beautiful area.

Beach is falling into the sea

By TheRoyalFish5 |

We hadn't been to this beach in 2 years and couldn't believe how much it had changed. It is much narrower now but the waves are just as spectacular and the water is just as beautiful. Plus, the bike ride from town is fun and so is eating at Millie's!

A Nantucket Pleasure

By Jerry R |

One of the best beaches on Nantucket and terrific sunset-viewing. (if you have a 4 wheel drive, go to Smith's Point for the best sunset views anywhere). Enhance your visit with a stop at Millie's Restaurant. This establishment was completely rejuvenated about 5 years ago, and is a nice place to go for refreshments and good food.

Must visit while on Nantucket

By g2onario |

If you are on Nantucket, you must visit Madaket Beach. You can easily take the bus from downtown and it will get you to the beach in less than 20 minutes. Very quiet, very clean, very peaceful. Be sure to pack some snacks and/or drinks since there is not much besides Millie's out there.

Good Sunset Beach

By ethomas1850 |

This beach on the South-West side of the island is great for seeing the sunset in the summer. It is not the best beach for swimming since the waters are a little rough. If you are lucky, you might spot a seal or two in the water.

By meeshny |

It's a beautiful area but erosion has reclaimed the beach to the sea. The dunes are eroding, also and homes are in jeopardy. The sunsets are still magnificient.

Amazing sunset!

By 682toma |

We stumbled upon this gem by accident. We were told to try the local restaurant here which is Millie`s so we gave it a try. Took the free Millie`s shuttle from the visitors center in town to the restaurant. After eating we walk down to the beach, maybe about 50 yards or so and got there to see the most amazing sunset from the most western part of the Island. Worth the trip there.

Don't miss the sunset

By NYPNYC |

One of the best places to watch the sunset that we've ever been. Take a bottle of wine and a blanket and your camera!

What a beauftiful beach on the backside of Nantucket

By Mr. Guinea Pig |

The wife and I took a drive and found Madaket. What a gem! Beautiful beach on the Atlantic. The surfers were all over it when we were there and it made for some excellent video's

Best Beach with Great Restaurant on site.

By Dean D |

Madaket beach is an all around great beach for families & friends. However if you want to have the most outstanding lunch, while being at a beach, than go to Millie's restaurant. it's a 1-2 minute walk form the beach. The beach has a life guard & a free parking area that fills up fast.So arrive by 10:00am if you can. It has mobile toilets on site but I used Millie's when I had lunch. There are other great beaches on the island, but i can assure that one of them have great food like Millie's...

Great beach

By mjlothar |

Not too windy, large beach, good sand, a bit of waves, not too crowded. Ride your bike out there for a little exercise ;)

Surfs up!

By Meg W |

Madaket Beach is a great place to bike to and view the grand ocean expanse. Here is a cloudless day in July . The waves can either be calm or crashing on shore . That is the beauty of it. Pack a sunset picnic that will be memorable!
(Make sure you pack s cap for the wind !!)

Town to Millie's to Madaket = Perfect Day

By sarahgoeshere |

Hop on a bike and follow the path from town to Madaket, with a stop at Millie's to-go window for sandwiches to bring to the beach. (There's also a little shop to grab drinks/towels/etc.) When you're done at Madaket, treat yourself with a visit to Cisco Brewers, and that may just be the best Nantucket summer day ever.

(Note - this is re: 2016, though I don't think anything about the beach or that routine has changed since.)

End of island

By onatrip76 |

This beach is gradually being washed out to sea. The homes along this area are on a clock. Many have already been taken by the ocean. It is the best place to watch the sunset and a good walking beach. You can catch fish here, too!

Nude bathing after Labor Day

By SROVirginia |

Nice beach, very walkable and less crowded than other spots. Just don't be surprised if you see nude sunbathers, sea-bathers, and folks generally walking around nude after Labor Day.

Cool beach but rough waves - careful with kids

By Sebastian G |

My 12 year old didn't really want to get in here but the rest of us did - the waves were pretty big with a decent undertoe.

Jetties beach is much more calm and warmer water closer to town.

Good beach!

By Penny H |

... at the end of a very do-able bike-ride. I am not a particularly able bicyclist... & the ride was made easy by an off-road biking path.

The beach was sandy, with a large carpark. If you're off-season, you need to bring your own deli-picnic - the cafes will be shut!

Fire in the Sky

By Jcrosstalk |

Madaket is a great place to go off road and catch a great sunset. Rent a jeep ride on the sand dunes and park just before sunset to catch the most amazing colors in the sky.

Favorite Beach on Nantucket

By LinekinLass |

Madaket beach has a remote, beautiful, end of the earth feel to it even though it's gotten a bit more developed than I'd like. The trick is to wonder down the various sandy lanes and discover areas that even in the height of season are quiet If possible, stick around for the sunset. You won't be disappointed.

Best beach moment of my life

By Todd-e-bones |

was when I first arrived on Madaket beach and was BLOWN AWAY by the waves, the colors, the sky, the lay of the land, and the warm sun and solid 6mph breeze... it was a PERFECT MOMENT.

Then, the second day when the waves were NOT 6'+, my family and I all got out in the waves and we hopped around and body surfed the waved for hours - it was the best beach moment of my life. Awesome to the hilt.

Beautiful Beach

By JennaBird |

My husband and I went to Madakat beach the week of Labor day. It was one of the only beaches that still had bus access running every day after the Monday of Labor Day. It was so wonderfully quiet! There were only a few other people on the beach each day and we had some great beach days weather wise. One sad part about the beach is the obvious erosion. There is not much sand area to sit on and the area that is left is on a downhill slope. This did not bother us as we do not have any children yet and were really only here to relax. The sand that was there was great – nice and soft to walk on, but not too fine. There was a heavy breeze each day – this did not bother us either. The waves were a bit choppy each day and there was an undertow that seemed to be in effect each day. This would not be a beach that I would bring children who want to swim to. I was a bit disappointed myself that I was unable to enjoy going out further. There were no lifeguards on duty this week – I am guessing this is when the off season starts. We enjoyed Quesadillas one day from Millie’s which is a great restaurant that is next to the bus stop and beach. Check the schedule though as this is the only place to get food in the area and they are not open each day. There are outhouses – but they are to be as expected.
Would love to come back to this beach if we are ever back here again without children. Loved the peace and quiet – and even had a seal sighting.

Great End of the Day Spot

By Mark W |

Took the bus out for the sunset and stopped by Millies for some great California/Mexican style food and a drink. Great way to spend the end of the day on the island.

Worth the cycle !

By Ailin B |

We were staying near Surfside and town cycled the 7 miles to Madaket beach, while our husbands drove the cars, FULL of all the beach furniture!
On the way you MUST stop, to feed the snapping turtles. A real treat for the children and teenagers. Its a little inlet of water on the left side as you drive to Madaket, almost halfway..

The beach in Madaket is spotless and has lifeguards. There are portable toilets which STINK !!! ...

The waves are quite large here, and fine for our teenagers, but maybe not that suitable for little children as the rip is very strong.

However, each cloud has a silver lining and beside this beach is the acclaimed restaurant and bar Millie's of Madaket.
DEFINITELY for ALL the family and superb choice of foods and drinks.

There is a cute little shack style store adjacent to Millie's which has all the necessary items you may need going to the beach.

LOVE MADAKET and ALL our FAMILY will returen there.

Great Sunset

By AnnapMDHiker |

Took the Wave over to catch the sunset. Fun atmosphere. Get food from Millie's early if that is in your plan. Caught the first Wave bus back after sunset with no problem.

Nice sunset

By Dale E |

Nice place to go if you want to get away from the hub of the island. We enjoyed a stroll on the beach and the sunset after a scrumptious meal at Minnie's.

Home on Madaket Beach

By Kind Traveler |

Madaket is our favorite beach on Nantucket. Madaket is less crowded than the other beaches and has killer sunsets. It is easy to take the bus or ride bikes from town. Madaket has only one restaurant, Millies, and one little shop, also part of Millies. For a quite escape from downtown, check out Madaket Beach!

Small in Width, But Fun for Boogy Boarders

By John W |

The beach is smaller than many in width but it is plenty long. More than enough beach length to find your own private area. Usually there's good wave action providing fun in the surf; not long rides, but powerfull and fun.

Nice Beach, Rough Tides

By DLG6395 |

Madaket Beach is beautiful, but the surf and tides can be rough. I wouldn't recommend this beach for young kids or poor swimmers. Even on a hot day with a lifeguard few people were swimming.

Looking out at the ocean is breathtaking, but turn back to the beach and you'll see the remains of homes (wires, some debris and PVC pipes) sticking out of the sand dunes from recent storms that took out beachfront homes.

There are few shells on this beach, but the sand is soft. There is a ramp to the beach that can be used for wheelchair access. Parking is free if you can find it either in the dirt/sand lot or on the street. Go to Millie's for beach fare take out and have it on the beach during sunset for a beautiful evening to remember.

sunset

By ERIN L |

Great beach. Surf was rough. The sunset is amazing! You need to make it a point of your vacation to go! We headed over around 1:30pm (not crowded), went to Millies for dinner and walked back over for the sunset!

May Madaket survive erosion!

By Stuart P |

Once among the broadest beaches, with lovely dunes, Madaket Beach has been hard hit with storm damage and erosion, including the heartbreaking loss of homes. But it remains a substantial strand, great for long walks... and sunset shows no erosion!

Beautiful Beach

By Steve06831 |

For a beautiful day on a wonderful beach do not miss this gorgeous beach. A little far from town but worth it.

Awesome

By lovrtotrsavel |

Very clean, breezy, quiet! Should have better restrooms and perhaps a snack shack. Porta -potties arent my thing!

seals playing in the waves

By ksgnat |

very quiet, but millie's was still open and provided anything you might need for a day at the beach; gorgeous sunset spot

Beautiful sunsets!

By Bill13669 |

Madaket Beach is a spectacular beach location to watch the most magnificent sunsets on Nantucket. It is easy to get to as is everything on the island, and a must stop to see the sunset over the horizon!!

SUNSET

By deborahc840 |

It's a gorgeous place to watch the sunset and for people to gather in their lawn chairs. Wear a sweatshirt! It gets cold even in July. And if you really want to be ambitious, pack a bottle of wine. It's nice that so many people congregate to "celebrate" sunset.

A secluded place to visit.

By Patricia H |

This beach is walking distance from Millie's Restaurant so you can get some food to go to this beautiful and secluded beach. It was our first visit to this beach and we were so glad we sought it out during this trip.

WIneFest!

By Karen M |

My second year traveling to Nantucket for Wine Fest. If you haven't gone, GO! It is an amazing time, with beautiful beaches and five-star restaurants and WINE. Meeting wonderful people along the way is definitely one of the highlights.

Beautiful wide beach

By Seamoor7 |

Every year the sands shift at Madaket Beach. Some years the beach is narrow, others it can be quite wide and 4 wheel drive accessible. This is one of those years. You can drive on and make your way out toward Smith Point. Deep sand is a caution, let the air out of your tires for traction. This beach faces southwest so sunsets are spectacular. A great picnic area. There are several access points to the beach. Some have parking.

Madaket Beach in Fall

By Elizabeth B |

This beach is a bit different. The waves and surf can be very rough. There has been some noticeable erosion asof Oct 2017. Its a little bit of a drive from downtown but easy to find. Nice after the crowds left. Limited patking, but the lot is a mess. Big potholes so take it easy.

Weather didn't stop us

By 1421 |

Go see this beach. It's austere and beautiful. The weather wasn't the best this time, but were entertained by seals watching us walk the beach. It's fabulous when the weather's good. It's basic, hardly any parking, get a bike and ride out, one port-a-john.

Beautiful beaches

By Madaketdreaming |

Great little town area, outside of town. Easy access on bike path or by car/bus. Bus stops right in front of Millie's. Public beach near Millie's has a life guard, much calmer and really beautiful beach on Smith's Point. My favorite place in Nantucket!

Miles of tranquilty

By Bonny L |

Miles of serenity...almost feels like you're on a private beach!!! Coffee on the beach in the morning, sunbathing, fishing, walking, seal watching, and best location to watch the sunset!!!

Erosion at the Beach

By Kristen S |

We had just come to the island after a horrible storm - but we could not even step on Madaket beach when we biked up there.....huge holes between the path and the beach. They will probably have this fixed come Spring - but in Fall and Winter - Watch out

$2 bus from town!

By Robert S |

Great surf beach; easy access from town on public bus. Beautiful sunset views. Millie's restaurant is right there! Small convenience store also.

Spectacular

By Richard G |

Fabulous sandy beach with superb breakers rolling in from the North Atlantic, a sight to behold and wonder at the power and beauty of the ocean.

The best sunset on the island

By nrsantilli |

Madaket Beach is a must stop for Nantucket visitors. Beautiful, clean beach with plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the sun and surf.

Stick around for the sunset. It is the best place on the island to see the sunset. The beach attracted a great crowd for the sunset but there was plenty of space to drop a blanket or beach chair to soak up the colors of the sunset on a beautiful summer's evening.

Best place to see the sunset on Nantucket

By Trovato44 |

Came in the off-season (late October) - we rented bikes at Young's and took the 6 mile ride to see the sunset here. It was amazing - and not crowded at all (we saw maybe 5-6 people). I'm sure in the summer this place really picks up! Incredible views... and plenty of seals playing to keep you company.

By ex-staffer |

Took the bus, walked two minutes to the bluff overlooking the sea, watched the sunset, had pizza and a beer at the West End, caught the bus back. My idea of a lovely evening.

breathtaking

By Rebecca S |

accessible from the bike trail, beautiful, quiet, warm water

One of our favorite places on the Island

By PIRwayland |

Madaket beach is one of our favorite beaches for taking long walks with our dogs. Walking East from the where the life guards are takes you to Smith Point, empty beaches and wildlife.

Beautiful

By tim_dw1985 |

We recently visited this beach. The views were amazing. It was a very clean beach with lifeguard in duty. The beach was covered with fog in the middle of the day and was unlike any beach I'd seen before. It was a 5 minute walk from the bus stop.

Beautiful but huge waves

By NewYork5family |

Not too crowded and lovely but it was windy when we were there and the waves were monstrous. Walked up to Millie's for lunch which was one of our favorite meals. Saw a seal from shore.

Excellent!

By Gossamergrl67 |

Quiet and beautiful beach to walk late in the day. We ate at Millie's after and had an amazing meal. The Madaket Mystery cocktail was fabulous. Very beautiful and peaceful spot.

Best sunset!

By Tiffany367 |

Watching the bright green waves roll in onto the beach and the smell and feel of the salty ocean sea spray leaves a big grin on your face.

Madaket Beach

By Bernadette D |

We rode our bikes out to Madaket because we'd been told it was a great spot to watch the sunset and it was fabulous! Because we visited in the middle of September, the crowds had died down significantly and it was like being on your own private beach and the far end of the island. Sadly Millie's, the famous restaurant at the beach, was closed so we have another reason to go back to Nantucket!

Wonderful Sunsets from this beach !

By skibbees |

While on Nantucket Island this month ( August 2013 ) we rented a jeep for two days while on the island and one of our favorite points of interest was Madaket Beach. It has fabulous sunsets !

Beautiful beach

By Emma787 |

Beautiful long beach to walk along (too surfy for swimming). Picturesque (and there's a great restaurant at the end of the bike trail.)

Amazing sunsets

By david d |

My wife and I rode our bikes to Madaket Beach. It is a don't miss beach for the sunset alone. Go on a clear day and you will love the sunset

Perfect beach

By tracie1963 |

The Wave bus stops there, and there is a wonderful restaurant - Millie's- which also has a sandwich shop and small market. It was not crowded on a sunny Tuesday in July. Enough waves to be fun, but not dangerous. Lifeguards, bathrooms, seals, and nice sand. No shells and bathrooms are ports lets, no showers.

Ok beach

By deltaduck2 |

I have to be honest, I didn't find any of the beaches on Nantucket to be all that great. Compared to a lot of places we've been on the east coast, this doesn't rank up there for our family. I think for smaller kids there are some great beaches because there is little surf, but for teens looking for waves, they are often hard to come by.

Bus to beach

By CapeCodder001 |

Take the bus out of the town center to enjoy a short ride and tour of the island. Make a stop into Millie's as well for lunch or an ice cream.

Quiet beach

By Beth C |

The beach was lovely. Had porta potties. Close to Nellies for yummy food. We biked from town. Looked like parking was tight by noon.

One of my Favorite Spots on the Island!!!

By DMcmack |

I grew up going to Madaket every summer for two weeks and that was my favorite beach. It had been over ten years since I had been there last fall and I was amazed by how much beach had eroded but after walking far up towards Smith's Point and taking a Great and refreshing swim it was just as Awesome as I remembered!!!

Great surfer watching

By Randall M |

We rode bikes from town out to Madaket Beach one day and took the bus back the next day. Madaket has great wave action and the surfers were putting on a show! Good people watching spot. Easy access. Eat at Millie’s while you’re there and be sure to visit Cisco Brewers on the way back to town!

Love this beach

By Nancy M |

Madaket has the best beach as far as my Family is concerned. We have vacationed there for 20 years and will return when possible. With the shuttle easy access to downtown. Millie's is a great place to eat. Sunsets are beautiful! LOVE IT

washing away

By Solerita |

This is one of my favorite places but I was sad to see that the beach has eroded so much. Ride a bike out to Madaket and see the sunset, it is perfect. If you want to get food, there is Millie's where the food is just ok but it is fine for the beach. The waves are HUGE here so be careful if you are going with kids. Beautiful beach.....I would not miss a chance to be there.

Great sunsets

By Conrad |

The beach is grand - big waves and cool ocean breezes - match by great sunsets. Easy bus ride from town - about 15 minutes, with regular pick ups on the hour (in town) and half hour (at the beach).

The bus requires cash on the bus because, despite having a central bus station, one cannot buy tickets there.

Sunset and horseshoes Crab

By Akio A |

Soooooooooooo, many contributors says it is a nice spot for Sunset. And it is!!! Go there!!
If you didn't rent a bike, or think it is too far to go on that, take the bus!! Last stop!!!
Once on the beach, turn right, and keep walking!!! At some point, you will see not just the beach, but a bay area on your write hand. Step on the sandbanks, and check this bay area.
They have many HorseShoe Crab.
I had never seen it before. I first got scared as I've never seen it in the South hemisphere (I come from Brazil). Then I read few texts on it, and it is AMAZING!!! So try to see them!!!

Another advise. There is a bus map with hours in most of bus-stops. So check the bus schedule on you way back, so you don't get stuck in the bus stop for half hour in the middle of nothing particularly fun.

Have in mind that after the sunset, it can get chilled. So if y plan to stay after the sunset, or miss the bus, u might need a jacket!!!

Have a nice stay!

Great Sunsets

By Janie H |

Madaket Beach is the go-to spot for viewing the sunset and watching for the notorious 'green flash') I've never seen it. Take the shuttle bus from town to avoid the limited parking situation. After the sut sets walk to Millie's Resturant for a great taco dinner, then catch the shuttle back to town. It's s perfect summer evening for you and your family.

Of course you can swim under the watchful eyes of town-employeed lifeguards, who are on duty until 5:00 PM, but beware of potential strong undertow, so I only go swimming while they are present.

Excellent beach

By Emelen1 |

Small but nice surf.. Clean beach. Good walking beach. Never too crowded. Lifeguard on duty. Seems like plenty of parking.

fun in the sun

By Amy L |

Quiet, great waves and plenty of beach front. This is our 4th year visiting Madaket and we love it. Best of all, the beach offers the best seats in the house for those amazing sunsets. Port-o-potties are available, so is a quick walk to Millies for ice-cream or lunch. Its a great beach for everyone.

Usually heavy surf, great body surfing

By RAFEnginefixer |

No amenities in the beach, however shops nearby within walking distance. parking is limited with some roadside parking.

Madaket Beach

By Amy D |

A fantastic beach in Nantucket! The short drive from town is well worth it. It was too cold to get in the water but the sand felt great on our feet!

Completely New, Now

By Jerry R |

Over the last several years, erosion in Madaket has transformed the beach, and now the former one is completely closed off. But the town has down a great job of creating a new beach just yards away. Madaket has one of the best beaches on the island, and with its west orientation one of the best sunset-viewing spots. Visitors, in fact, bike or drive the 6 miles from town to view the sunset. Worth doing.

Sunset and dinner at Madaket Millie's

By Diane B |

Dinner at Millie's was fast, delicious, and reasonably priced...go early or be prepared to wait 20-30 minutes. The short walk to Madaket beach at about 6:30-7:00pm to watch the gorgeous sunset surrounded by lots of families with adorable kids and dogs chasing the waves was great fun. I highly recommend this stop while visiting Nantucket.

Watched the seals

By LeanneandBen404 |

Empty beach. We packed a lunch and biked out to watch the seals for the afternoon, simply beautiful.

Best beaches

By Denise L |

Beach near golf course excellent,, it was terrific and water not too cold, leave your shoes and go barefoot

Beautiful Sunset - worth the trip out

By Naomi S |

The sunsets are breathtaking and worth the trip. The beach is nice and has a lot of surf and waves. Glad to see life guards and port-a-potties.

Lovely beach for walks and relaxing

By Andre M |

We've been here in October, so it was too cold to go for a swim, but it was great for an extended beach walk.

Pristine beach - big waves for little ones!

By stephso |

Madaket Beach is on the western end of the island and is absolutely gorgeous. We visited this past weeks and compared to Dionis, the waves were big and it was very windy. We opted to head back to Dionis with our little ones where the water appeared to a little bit more friendly.

Beautiful beach

By shan262 |

We weren’t really prepared to get in the water and that’s a good thing because it was cold. However we biked to the beach and it’s a really beautiful beach to spend a little time. Not much service there so bring a picnic or some snacks.

Fantastic surf

By bk3104 |

The waves never slow down here! The houses near the beach are so wind and sand blown from the onshore wind. The beach itself is gorgeous and we'd love to return at sunset as the beach faces west.

great sunsets, just like the ones in Key West!

By ackmacphoto |

The food at the restaurant is a little pricy But the only game in town . Great kids meals and family eats. If you drink then great too!

Great beach on ACK....if you have a 4WD vehicle

By Robert S |

This year the beach was so wide that cars were allowed to drive 3/4 of the way to the point. Then in mid August, the terns had all fledged, and we could now drive to the tip of Smith's point! There USED to be geat fishing there. This August, the fishing was lousy.
This surf beach is pristine. Generally, those on the beach don't leave garbage around...though I did see a pile of used and broken chairs, waiting for who??? to clean up!
It is long enough so you can find some space, and not be cozied up to the next car on the beach.
It is a great beach on Nantucket!

Beautiful!

By Tina M |

We drove out to the beach on our rented scooter and the ride out was fabulous. Very scenic. The beach was lovely and we sat for a bit to watch people surf. Great spot to walk along the beach and just enjoy the scenery. Very clean as well.

Biked to Madaket Beach...worth the trip.

By thebrickhouse |

We biked to Madaket Beach from Surfside. Definetly worth the trip. If you get hungry along the way...Stop in at Millies...what a pleasant surprise and the food is super fresh.

Go for sunset!

By GMBG |

A great beach and the best place to watch the sunset on Nantucket. Big wide beach and easy access. A lovely and peaceful place off season

Sunset in the West

By curtinj |

While it has been one of favorite beaches; the sunset is worthy of the price of admission to visiting this wonderful island.

Good waves, great for sunset view

By onatrip76 |

This beach is slowly going out to sea, but it remains very popular every summer, especially with Millie's being so handy for snacks and lunch or dinner.

Sunsets worth the trip

By Kari B |

You must include a sunset at Madaket Beach on your trip to ACK. There is a very large parking lot. If you have time, have a margarita upstairs at Millies. But, you don't have to....mother nature takes care of the scene beautifully!

Gorgeous

By Susan Raisch |

This small beach is perfect. The only thing nearby is the legendary Millie's restaurant and lovely cottages. We took a picnic, books and our camera to enjoy the afternoon and evening. We waded into the water, jumped in the waves and watched the seals pass by and stick their heads up out of the water. The sunset was INCREDIBLE. We have been many places but this is our new favorite beach. If you go to Nantucket, this is a must.

Expecting a Nor'easter

By Norma J |

The ocean was powerful! It was so windy and the surf so rough that we could only enjoy being there for a short while - only ones there!

Good fishing here!

By Bill M |

This is always a good fishing location! Usually not crowded, you do have to walk a lot. For 100 I could repeat the first part. That do it?
