Fun hike from the Hyatt

By Steven B |

Great easy hike. Multiple trails seem to all end up in the same place. Great views and plenty of spots to stop and whale watch.

Wow!

By pjgrad |

This was a fun hike. You cross beach, sand dunes, cliffs, golf course, jungle and caves. The views are amazing. At the end you get a wonderful beach to relax on! Bring you towel and water.

Hard to find but worth the search

By Kathleen S |

The Mahaulepu Heritage Trail is hard to find because there is little to no signage, that we saw. Nor are there trail markings along the way. You basically just follow the beaten path. We ended up doing this trail from two different approaches. The first time we drove down a long dirt road with lots of potholes and the trail was rugged and through lots of prickly shrubbery. The second time we started from Shipwreck Beach, which I think if the official starting point, and the trek was much more enjoyable and picturesque. I would definitely encourage the hike starting from Shipwreck Beach. Lots of views and stopping points along the rugged coastline with the pounding waves of the ocean below. It was definitely the highlight. Shipwreck Beach was a great place to sit and relax in the shade and enjoy the Hawaiian atmosphere. The highlight of our first attempt was walking to the cave and seeing into that amazing site. We missed the opening hours of the cave, but the views from the outside were impressive. At that point we were also able to cross over a small bridge to visit a turtle refuge. The turtles are in enclosures and there wasn't any signage to explain why, or what type of turtles that they were.

Easy Walk

By Mike H |

This trail goes by ship wreck beach and then on further. You go by some cliffs with the waves baning against them. Look back and you have a great view of ship wreck beach

Stunning ocean views!!

By LeeMayo |

Nice hike along the shore. Beautiful ocean and cliff views! Truly breathtaking!! There are some tricky spots along the way, but alternative trails inland.

Gorgeous trail along the ocean

By Marco |

To get there you just have to go East on Poipu Rd until you reach the golf club. Then go south and you will be able to park really close to Shipwreck's Beach. Then walk to the East side of the beach and you will find the beginning of a stunning trail.

At the beginning you will climb to the top of the rock that is overlooking Shipwreck's Beach and then it is an easy hike along the ocean with spectaculars views. The weather was cloudy and misty but we were so amazed by the landscape that we did not mind at all. So please do not hesitate to go even if the weather is not the best, just appreciate the fact that you won't be suffering the heat under a very hot sun!

And if you want to experience something different, just choose a different path on your way back (go further from the ocean). You will see different kind of trees and flowers and it is really nice too.

This was one of our favorite places in Kauai so I definitely recommend it.

Nice Trail

By irawine |

When you get to the jumping off point at Shipwreck Beach you can either take a trail to the left or to the right. The one to the right was paved for the section we were on it, the trail to the left is unsaved and takes you up o to the cliffs overlooking the water. We enjoyed both sections.

includes both paved and unpaved areas; sturdy shoes recommended

By Cynthia F |

I enjoyed this attraction. Perfect support for my claim that some of the best attractions are free.

We were staying at the Grand Hyatt resort in Poipu Kauai and walked the heritage trail in several different directions. I highly recommend good sneakers or hiking boots. My husband wore flip flops one day and wasn't able to continue after a while, when the pavement ended and the trail became bumpy and rocky.

There are several different short trails ascending from Shipwrick Beach toward the cliff from which people cliff dive into the ocean. We were able to find two that were less treacherous and involved less climbing. There is a small public parking lot near this area and many more cars park on both sides of the road near the parking lot.

Easy hike!

By Lauren Grohs |

The views are absolutely worth it! Along the way there are plenary of places to stop and take it all in. There is also a cool location that you can leave your mark by stacking rocks!

smooth with incredible views

By ilovepetey |

i didn't love that this trail was so close to so many resorts but the trail itself was breathtaking and not too hard. i walked at a steady pace but stopped to take many photos and the entire trail took me 4 hours round trip from start to the very end. i would highly recommend this hike to anyone looking to catch some sun and beautiful views who isn't necessarily a very experienced hiker.

Great trail - few Markers

By Walter241 |

I started the trail near Shipwreck Beach by the Hyatt hotel. I saw no marker for the trail but was told that I was on it so kept walking. I ran into many intersecting trails but almost no indication of the correct way forward. It seems that people have made additional diversions as the trails all seem to converge at key points, like where you have to walk on the golf course. The cave trail does have a marker and is a side trip from the trail along the coast. I have attached a GPS record (Photo) of the walk I took. Great views of the coast line and for a while you walk on large sand dunes that have developed over the many years. Tthe sand banks have mostly ironwood trees growing on them.

Great trail along the coast

By Steveh3Texas |

We hike this trail each year we come to Poipu. We actually start at the Marriott Waiohai and walk past the Hyatt. When the waves are calm, this is one of the few places to spot whales.

Great walk.

By MrVisitsMexicoOften |

Great walk from major Poipu hotels, drive to and park at Shipwreck beach. Scale of total hike wasn't correct on map, it was 4 miles one way if you do the total hike, but, you can turnaround at any time, or at a few key beach stops. Save time for the CAVES if you can, it's a side hike.

Great hike

By davisfamilyMD |

We did not walk the full length but turned around at a small beach just past the stables.
Amazing views and colors around every bend and they look just as impressive on the way back.
We saw sea turtles and my buddy saw some whales offshore.
Park between the Hyatt and golf course. Trail is a not well marked with multiple options to start but they all end up in one place.

Beautiful vistas -2-hour hike

By JimRiesterer |

Also called the heritage trail, this starts at ship wreck beach on the southern coast of Kauai and continues along jagged cliffs ending at another long and isolated beach.

The only thing required is 2-3 hours and some good sturdy shoes-no flip flops or open sandals-to enjoy this scenic hike. Also bring water-it’s mostly sunny.

We started out around 8:15 on a Sunday and were lucky enough to even get a parking spot in the small lot next to the Hyatt. There are public restrooms at the park on the beach where you start your walk. The trail itself has three separate zones: (1) crumbling sandstone covered with sand to start (2) red clay dirt with sharp volcanic rocks in middle then (3) an easy walk in the grass on the edge of a PGA golf course-keep an eye out for golf balls.

If you keep going beyond there is another Large Beach and some caves (but they are only open certain days/hours).

We went to the caves and back at a modest pace, stopping often along the way for pictures. For us the round trip was around 2-1/2 hours. There are a few tricky spots but overall it wasn’t too bad in terms of hike-you just really need to watch your step on the volcanic rocks and stay back from the crumbling edges-especially in the sandstone section.

Beautiful hike with cliff and rock formations and isolated beaches.

By Douglas C |

A must hike, particularly if you stay on the South shore. Highly recommend going all the way to Kawailoa Bay and Kamala Point, which can reach either by hiking all the way from the Grand Hyatt or by driving on an extremely rough, rocky road. Check out Google maps and search for Kawailoa Bay. Fortunately getting there is long hike or over a treacherous road so it keeps the number of visitors low!

Beautiful hike

By ktstravels |

I really enjoyed this trail. It was a little hard to navigate at times, but after a while I realized that almost all paths lead to the same place. We tended to stay on the shoreline on the way there and more inland on the way back. I'd suggest packing lunch and lots of water- not a lot of shade along the journey.

Windy Walk

By lisaG2652XD |

Trail above the beach---windy day so didn't take the whole trail, but saw beautiful views! Trail not marked so almost missed the exit toward parking lot.

Nice easy trail with great views

By JeffG1234 |

We started at the Makauwahi cave preserve and walked towards Shipwreck beach. The trail has many different paths all braided together, pretty much any option works. A bit rough under foot at times, but mostly easy going. Great views of ocean, the sea cliffs and some of the ridges inland. Almost completely out in the open so pick a nice day.

very confusing trail but great views of the coast

By dj111 |

Perhaps we were too hot and tired for this hike but we found it difficult to navigate, zero signs, and multiple cutoffs and forks. Still worth a visit especially if you staying at the Hyatt.

Beautiful walk anytime of day

By MA250 |

We were lucky to stay in a condo along the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail and walked the path multiple times. Coming from the East coast of USA, we were up for the sunrise our first morning and took a stroll at first light. We found some great places in the early evening for family photos. The scenery was beautiful. The joggers in our party made good use of the trail.

Beautiful trail

By Wsb01 |

While this is not quite as easy as everyone says - at least if you take the path along the coast, it is incredibly beautiful and worthwhile. On a hot day it can feel longer than 2 miles. On the way back, I took the inner trail which was very easy and much quicker. But the coastal trail is stunning and highly recommended.

GORGEOUS hike - Skip the “turtle refuge”

By Jennifer D |

This hike is AMAZING! The views are breathtaking. Start at Shipwreck Beach. The trail is off to the left of the beach. I did this hike in Tevas and really wish I’d worn hiking boots. It would have been easier to maneuver the varied surfaces. Take the upper trail along the cliffs to avoid the heat. Even though the inner trail offers shade, it’s stifling hot. We went thru 2 liters of water (we are from Minnesota so it was HOT for us northerners). Stop the hike at the golf course. It’s awkward walking on the course and there is nothing interesting enough beyond the golf course to justify doubling the distance of the hike. We went all the way to Mahaulepo Beach and back and it was 5 miles (per Apple Watch). Don’t waste your time on the so called turtle refuge. It’s like a strange farm (we were thinking sea turtles) and we literally saw 1. Just enjoy the views from the cliffs and go back and enjoy Shipwreck Beach. It’s gorgeous!

Awesome easy trail along cliffs or tree lined path!

By Canuck |

Gorgeous views of several beaches and interesting cliff formations snakes this a must do in poipu.
Easy walk for most ages and even a tree lined path if you need a sun break or it’s get to hairy for you being near the edge

Great Family Hike

By amfram |

We did this hike starting at Shipwrecks beach with a 12 year old and a 10 year old. I took us about 40 minutes to get to the caves. We got a little lost, but someone showed us they way. Spent a little time at the caves and then made our way back. A great way to spend the morning in Kauai.

Recommended this path from a local and we enjoyed the trail. Not very challenging which is what we wanted. But nice.

By Dennis E |

This trail is right next to the golf course and the Poipu beach is the end result! Beautiful walk and perfect as we are recovering from knee replacement surgery.

Beautiful coastal trail

By Lisamb1 |

Such a beautiful trail. Was a cooler day with sun but a breeze the day we went, so not too hot! There is a jungle section and several areas out to or along the coast. Highly recommend and close to Poipu if you stay in that area. Maybe pick a cooler day or more cloudy day to go there and save the clear days for Waimea or jungle hikes

If you like to hike this is a must.

By R P |

Trail starts right at edge of Hyatt property and had a variety of terrain and fantastic views . Loved this !

Great Family Hike!

By Bags R Packed |

This was the perfect hike for our family of five. (It was rated as an easy hike by experienced hikers.) Go early in the morning, as you will want to hike along the cliffs looking down at the crashing waves while it is still cool. Also the parking lot fills up with cars in late morning, and you have no place to park…arrive before 9:00 am. if you can. First, the path meanders in a wooded grassy area, which eventually gives way to a more elevated rocky path and a breathtaking view of the ocean. We scheduled this hike for the first day of our Kauai vacation, and it was a nice start to our trip.

Gorgeous beaches

By Annrachelle |

We started at shipwreck beach and made our way to the very end. Although the trail is fairly exposed there was plenty of wind and lots of swimming spots to cool off. Highly recommend an early AM start, best around 7/7:30 to stay ahead of peak sun.

Beautiful And Easy Hike For The Family

By tphybridtx |

I hiked this relatively easy trail on my last full day of our Kauai vacation. This trail begins on Shipwreck Beach just behind the the Grand Hyatt Hotel. You can park in the beach parking lot if there is room, but there is also parking on the side of the road a little further up the road leading to the beach. Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail is about 4 miles long, out and back (2 miles each way). It has very little elevation change but the terrain does change quite frequently (sand, rock, etc.). The views along the trail are at times majestic, overlooking the cliffs, the amazing ocean views and often a few sea turtles along the way. It can get a little confusing because you have to hike on the golf course for a while and every few minutes there are different path option. The different paths always lead you back to the main trail, but it just adds extra walking. My visit was in the early afternoon. Parking was no problem, but the sun and heat can be a little problem for this time of day, especially if you have no water or are out of shape. The beach at the finish is not really a swimming location, but it is a great place for a picnic or just a short rest before you return. This hike can be done quite easily with children and is my only hike during our stay that was free from the famous Kauai mud. Not the best hike on Kauai, but still very enjoyable. I recommend tennis shoes or hiking shoes, but it can be done in sandals if you so desire.

Incredible views!

By Kdawg282 |

This is an awesome trail! It’s about 2 miles long one way and there are multiple ways you can go. We decided to take the one closer to the coast for the views and the first part has some difficult parts to cross is you take that route. It’s totally worth it though! Trail isn’t always clearly marked but relatively easy to figure out once you take a minute to look! This was something I would call a must do! We were able to catch a full rainbow during our hike as well! Incredible!

Nice easy hike

By Craig A |

My wife and I did this Saturday afternoon. It was a nice easy hike with some great ocean views. If the sun is out wear sunscreen and bring water!

Easy walk

By hounds20 |

Started at Shipwreck beach. Easy walk along coast and golf course. We started early so not many others along the trail.

Enjoyable hike to beautiful secluded beach

By Kimberly K |

Trail head is near Hyatt where we stayed so very convenient. It is an easy hike with ocean on one-side and golf course on other. I especially enjoyed the stop at the protected and preserved sink-hole which had interesting information about it's archeological importance on the island. I saw alot of people with sandles on - I'm glad I wore hiking boots as the trail has multiple surfaces - sand, rock and dirt.

Beach to bluffs

By Lawrence701 |

A pretty and easy walk right along the beach in front of the Grand Hyatt Kauai. You can jump off a mini cliff or see the sunrise and sunset within minutes of the resort.

long trail, nice beach views, great for photography

By EmAyJayAy |

We did this at the hottest time of the day so we were looking forward to the beach at the end the entire time, but I have to say it is a beautiful view (as you can see through all the visitor's photos). The walk is pretty easy, although at times it is not marked well. The beach at the end is very secluded, but mainly for strong swimmers as there is a strong undercurrent and it was quite difficult to get out of the water once going it as it keeps pulling you back in.

The walk itself is great and really good for some great photos!

Generally not too busy.

At one point you do walk through a gold course (on the edges of it) which was kind of odd, but I think that was the only way.

Saw A Whale From the Trail!!

By Robert D |

This trail is an easy hike over cliffs to the east of Poipu Beach. There are many spectacular views out over the ocean. We were lucky enough to see a large whale surface and spout about 500m from shore. Stayed at the Sheraton Kauai. Its about a one hour walk to the start of the trail. But the whole thing is walkable for a hiker from the hotel. About 10 to 15k round trip depending on how much exploring you do on the trail. A nice afternoon diversion!

Breathtaking views of the coast!

By Kathy F |

This is a fairly easy hike, although it can be tricky to find the right trail at times. However, it's so worth the fabulous views! Wear sunscreen, good walking shoes, and plenty of water. And a camera, of course!

Gorgeous coastline views of Kauai

By unepoire |

One of the most beautiful views of the ocean you can get on Kauai without doing any sort of serious hiking. This trail is certainly doable in flip flops, but a sturdier or closed toe shoe is probably more appropriate.

The first 1/3 of the trail starts at the Grand Hyatt in Poipu and is along the sandy beach in front of the hotel. The middle 1/3 of the trail is the most gorgeous portion. The last 1/3 of the trail mostly hugs a golf course and ends somewhat abruptly after a ranch/farm.

For the central 1/3 of route, there are actually two parallel trails (not sure which one is the official one). One trail closely hugs the coastline and is along the sand and rock cliffs and there is almost no foliage coverage for this trail, so definitely wear a hat or be prepared to be in the sun the entire way. There are a handful of areas where you have do hoist yourself a little bit on rocks but it’s all very doable. There are some areas as well where you are quite close to the cliff edge, but if you just follow the sandy footprints and well worn footpath, you’ll be fine. The second trail is parallel to the coastal trail and inland. The trail has several areas where there are Y splits and if you take the left hand trail (heading north), then you’ll end up on this well worn interior trail that is all covered with foliage and is mostly in the shade.

At a leisurely pace, starting from the southwest side of the Grand Hyatt in Poipu, it took us about 3 hours to do the hike round trip. We did not stop anywhere to picnic but I think that would be something to consider for a return excursion!

Nice stroll along the South side of Kauai

By Autumn |

This is a nice easy hike along the shoreline on the South shore of Kauai. We did a video of this trail on our YouTube channel complete with tips and information along the way. Very exposed so don't hike in the heat of the day and definitely wear a hat, hiking shoes or sneakers and take sunscreen and water!

Stunning hike

By C-Z-1982 |

Great path (multiple choice path...) along the coast. Terrain varies from sand, to rocks, to grass (along the golf course) and provides some spectacular view of the water bashing against the coast. Back and forth takes about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

Sandy Trail

By @atracks |

Very easy trail with minimal signs so it is a bit of a mystery how you go. The coast has some scenic spots but the worst part is much of the trail is sandy so expect sand to get in your shoes & socks or wear flip flops

Spectacular Views

By Wittywanderer |

Spectacular views of the ocean and the cliffs. We needed a little more signage to know how to stay on trail.

Beautiful trail along the ocean

By Luke A |

This was a great out-and-back hike. Partly on sand and partly on rock, so it's a good idea to be wearing hiking shoes. Throughout the trail there are anywhere from 2-10 trails that parallel eachother, often crossing one another. It can definitely make you feel like you took a wrong turn, but you didn't. They all lead to the same place. Stay closer to the ocean if you want the nice view and hopefully a breeze. Stay more inland if you're wanting some shade. In total you can hike up to 3 miles one way (starting at Shipwreck beach), but the views are similar throughout so you can turn around whenever you like without missing out on too much. Overall an awesome trail!

Unbelievable Views

By Terri S |

This was one of our favorite things to do while in Kauai. The trail is right along the coast, and the views are spectacular. It's free, and definitely worth seeing. We saw sea turtles in the water and a whale. It did get crowded when we were leaving, and parking is limited. Suggest getting there early.

Good Hike, Beautiful Views

By Michael I |

I enjoyed the hike, but have two warnings for you: a) there is not shade along the hike, so it may get pretty warm in the direct sun after awhile, make sure you are covered; and 2) we found the trail hard to discern at first. Basically, we were confused trying to find the trail’s start. It’s not that it is difficult, because you know you have to go up the hill, and any path up it will take you to the right place, but I can see how someone who is looking for a definite marked trail start might turn back in confusion because it isn’t that clear. Well worth the perseverance, though!

🤩 Stunning views!

By Diane E |

Stunning views of the beautiful Shipwreck beach from the top of the cliff. Trail pretty easy to maneuver. Views do not disappoint!!

Pleasant & Classic Hawaii Hike

By GnarGnarPowPow |

When I think of Hawaiian hikes, I think of ridgelines striding alongside the ocean. This trail fits the bill. Great for a morning stroll or an evening hike before dinner.

Parked at "Shipwreck's" and meandered my way into the bushes and up onto the ridge.

The only knock on this trail is that the trail itself is not well defined. But it's not that hard - don't walk into the water, walk alongside it and BOOM! Great hike!

Pretty Hike with poorly delineated trail markings

By TravelingCirque |

I can see why people like this hike, it really does offer beautiful views of the ocean, volcanic rock formations, and wildlife (we saw two huge turtles swimming around). However, I prefer trails that are more clearly marked. This path was not only hard to find, but there were many different converging and diverging pathways, and it was difficult to know which to follow. Getting back to the Grand Hyatt was easy due to having the ocean right next to us, but I found myself getting anxious due to all the similar looking trails winding in and out. If you are comfortable with getting a little lost i'm sure you wouldn't have an issue. It was also very hot when we did this hike, and we turned back after about 30 minutes. I wouldn't do this again.

Great hike/walk to see some beautiful views

By Shelly S |

We went on this hike at 9am. It got quite hot so make sure you bring lots of water and a snack. When you think you've see it all, keep on going. We walked as far as the creek running into the ocean but didn't go into the water because there was an advisory that there was/could be bacteria in the water from the heavy rains. I would definitely recommend that people do this hike/walk. Some people were wearing flip flops an other running shoes. We wore our runners and I think we chose wisely.

Stunning scenes especially at sunrise.

By Idahogoldman |

This is one of the best things you can do on the island of Kauai and it is free. The coastline of the southernmost shore is rugged and breathtaking. Certainly a must do in my 73-year old opinion.

Gorgeous trail - park next to the Hyatt

By kbpneacl |

This is a gorgeous self-guided trail along the cliffs of southern Kauai. The views are stunning. Note that you will be very exposed to the sun and wind if there is any - take a lot of water. The trail is not very well marked, and you can take various routes. The terrain varies from beach to lava cliffs, a bit of golf course, a partially collapsed cave, horse stables and wild cliffs. Near the end, just before Gillin's beach, there's a stream you gotta cross. Take note of pollution signs. At times, the stream can be polluted with bacteria and you should resist the temptation to get in. You do not want to spend your vacation on Kauai praying to the porcelain altar. All in all a great, but hot hike.

Tip for dog owners. The Humane Society on HI-50 just south of Lihue allows you to 'lend' a dog for a day in exchange for a small contribution. You can take a furry friend on your hike!

Final note: This trail is perfectly safe, provided you use common sense and stay away from the high and rough cliffs. There's plenty of space and warning signs, but few fences. If you fall, it's a long swim back to a place where you can get back on the island - if you can swim.

Top notch beach trail

By Vivek K |

Bring lots of water on this 2 mile hike from Shipwreck's beach. Trail takes you through some important historical spots along beautiful sandy coves and old Hawaiian temples to the Mahaulepu beach, a secluded stretch of sand that makes for a great picnic spot for humans as well as monk seals.

Gorgeous scenery, easy trail

By Diane C |

Loved the scenery along the coast. Got extremely hot - take water. People have gone off the beaten path alot and there aren't good signs. Found ourselves backtracking to find the paths. But really a nice hike.

Easy to lose trail

By DebbieInDenver |

This is the second year in a row that we have done this trail. It is not difficult but there are so many paths that it is hard to find the way and keep to the trail. Hot in the sun. Bring water. We did see whales. Nice views. I don’t enjoy the part of the trail on the golf course.

Another favorite...

By davestolz |

Great trail! I'd say be thankful for all the sun relief available but the breeze off the ocean keeps you cooler in the sun than in the treeline where there is no breeze. Very beautiful scenery and facinating formations. Saw several Nene's along the trail which I've never seen in all my trips to Hawaii outside of a cage or zoo.

Pretty area with nice hike

By Ryan S |

Park at the small lot at end of Ainakoa Street (Google Maps also calls it Ainako St) by the beach. Then go to the left (as you face the ocean). There are any number of trails that all criss cross and interconnect, you can take any of them as long as you are generally following along the ocean and heading east. We took a complete hodgepodge route across the various paths and it worked out fine. The views are great. The area cuts through trees and sandy spots, it feels a bit like a Greek island atmosphere. We saw a few people with blankets spread under the trees to picnic or nap the day away. Overall it took us about two hours to go up and back the trail. There's some scrambling over rocks, and some uphill too, depending which paths you choose. It's impossible to avoid lots of sandy sections, so wear the right shoes (not flip flops or sandals). There's a restroom at the parking lot.

Beautiful views.

By 547heidik |

Not a bad hike at all regardless of age. We are in our 70's. Need to wear study shoes. Hike it in the early morning before it gets too hot. Highly recommend.

Stunning views

By Sue J |

This is one of my favorite places on Kauai. The hard part is finding Shipwreck beach, where the parking lot is. But once you get there the hike is beautiful.

Great views of the ocean!

By cberling |

Easy trail that isn't just one trail, but veers off into different paths. Great views and picturesque.

Well worth the trip

By Philip D |

Catch this easy trail between the Grand Hyatt resort and the beach in front of the Hyatt. Be aware there are several different routes to take (all easy), as you walk it goes off into different directions. We stayed toward the ocean side the entire way as to catch the best views and get a breeze. We went as far as the golf course and turned around. Well worth the effort to go. Don't worry about the red dirt as others have mentioned, as it didn't even stain our shoes.

Highly recommend you do the Maha'ulepu Heritage Trail in Kauai.

By IAfarmgirl |

This is a must do! Very walkable with beautiful views and ocean breezes! Start out at Shipwreck Beach. Parking is limited.

Well worth it!

By Ann C |

We loved the heritage trail. We walked about 1.5 miles and then back again (total of 3 miles) however you can go longer...or shorter. There is limited shade so wear a hat and lots of sun block.

The views are great. This is a coastal hike that actually begins at the corner of Shipwreck Beach in Keonela Bay and ends at Punahoa point...it runs along sand-dune cliffs, limestone formations and rough, rocky cliffs. You will see a kind of a mesquite tree and some piney trees. The ocean below was rough the day we were there. The sky was clear and the views were breath taking.

We started the trail from the Grand Hyatt...you can park across the street and walk into the Hyatt and turn left...we picked up the trail start at the end of the beach.

The trail deviates into different paths but they all merge in one way or another.

Beautiful area to hike and explore

By sihaviation |

Not for people with limited mobility as very little is even surfaces and it’s all along cliffs, but that said it’s stunning and beautiful. Try waking up early and being there for sunrise!!!

Outstanding morning hike

By SFO_intl |

Great views, tons of unique vistas of cliffs and tidepools. Lots of shade between Shipwreck Beach and golf course portion of hike, less shade from there onward toward the Maha'ulepu end.

Views for miles

By Cthymrtn |

Best hike we did in Kauai. Heed the advise about wearing sturdy shoes or at least something with a hard sole. The hike is a little tricky at first. But once you get to the top of the hill the view will knock you out. We hiked the entire length of the trail, every bend brought an even more spectacular view of the ocean. Wear lots of sunscreen bring a hat and some water. We sat for a while watching the waves crash into the cliffs.

Amazing Views!!!

By AWSalida |

Plan ahead for this hike from Shipwreck Beach. The sun gets hot and the trail is sand most of the way. We spotted turtles swimming in the waves, whales, fossils, and the most amazing landscapes!!! Trails can get very confusing. Just stick to the widest most traveled paths. We saw the beautiful cave and went as far as Gillins Beach before heading back to Shipwreck Beach which took us about 3 hours.

Seaside scenery

By Richard j |

This is a fairly easy hike, but not well marked. You can take different pathways along the cliffside, and won’t get lost, but you’re left looking for footprints of other hikers in the sand to know you’re on the right track... Only real signage is near a large heiau (ancient Hawaiian temple) near the golf course.

Roughly an hour each way.

Some striking seaside scenery, and an interesting alternative to most of the hikes we’ve done on Kauai which are in the jungle. This is a much dryer part of the island with cacti and scrubbier greenery.

Access near Shipwrecks Beach, just past the Hyatt.

Nice hike

By Michael H |

This is a nice hike with some great views. We went early in the morning around 8am and there was almost no one there. Parking was easy. Very nice. I imagine it could get quite hot in the afternoon hours. Bring water as there are no amenities.

Beautiful views and monk seal sighting

By TacomaTraveler2013 |

We completed this trail and really enjoyed the views and sights along the way. There were many branches of the trail which can be confusing but we stayed close to the edge of the cliff. There were parts where found one person a bit concerned about the step/climb. Would recommend hiking back from the cliff if new to hiking. We saw a monk seal down by the water. Part of the trail goes along the golf course which is fun. Toward the end - it is confusing - which is where it would be nice for some markings. But makes it fun too. Be warned - it is windy!

Amazing high ocean views and fun hiking trail

By Stephanie P |

This trail offers spectacular views of the ocean while walking along the high cliffs. If you are staying at the Grand Hyatt, the path starts on the left side of the property and you will go past a public parking lot. Once you go up into the cliffs, the paths are not always clear, but there are multiple interior paths and then an exterior one. Hiking shoes are recommended instead of Tevas/Chacos due to the rocks encountered. We hiked almost every day we were at the resort and the views were just amazing!
The path also takes you through a sacred area and on the edge of the golf course, then more hiking until you get to a small beach.
Other reviews mentioned that there was a cave so we were hoping to explore that at the end. Unfortunately as of October 31, it is now closed to everyone permanently. So you can take the extra “cave trail” that you will see, but the cave is no longer open and has a closed sign. Bring a hat and water. Round trip back to the hotel was 5.5 miles.

Easy Ocean-Side Pathways, Beautiful Sea and Coast Views

By deburkins |

The views along this multi-pronged trail are beautiful. The whales spouting in the distance add spice to the sea view pauses. The trail is always connected to direct coastal views, but offers an easier ‘main route’ connector path usually 30-40 yards into a gentle, shaded casuarina forest. We (four vacationing upper-60’s seniors from the mainland east coast) strolled casually from great view to great view over the approximately 2 mile walk, taking about 1 1/2 hours for the trip out and back. FYI - parking near the Shipwreck Beach starting point (next to the Hyatt complex) is at a premium. Happy walking!

Gorgeous hike with incredible photo opportunities

By Beee_Travels |

To do this hike, you drive to Shipwreck Beach and park there. The trail starts on the far left side of the beach up a kind of incline (just keep following it and after 5 minutes or so it will level out and turn into a sandy trail). It’s stunning and really easy, I did this hike in tevas as opposed to my actual hiking boots that I used for other hikes. That being said, there is still lots of uneven terrain and you are hiking on sand, so it is still a 'hike' rather than just a walk. This is one of the last undeveloped sections of coast line on the south coast and it’s really really beautiful. You can explore this area of a while, 1-2 hours for sure. This trail is super sunny and exposed so bring a bunch of water and hats! It's easy to get lost so stick to the wide, main trail/clearing.

Beautiful hike

By 319mrsh |

Many ways to take this trail... through the woods or by the ocean. Gorgeous views! It is easy to get separated from your party if you take one trail up to a point and they take another. You will be on sand and rocky terrain. Hiking shoes or tennis shoes are best. Bring water.

Morning Hike-Breathtaking Views!

By Sue W |

I’ve hiked quite a bit (Grand Canyon, Zion and Arches National Parks) but this has been my favorite! We hiked approximately 6.6 miles round trip (out and back) with 215 foot elevation gain. You hike along seaside cliffs along ocean. Views are stunning. You hike through sandy beach, up and over rocks through fern trees and over red dirt. Knowing the trail was part beach/water we opted to not wear hiking boots and did our Kune sandals. They worked well with loose gravel and the rocky areas. Although we had to stop to remove sand and small rocks on occasion. The trail follows across Poipu Golf course and on to Makauwahi Cave. The cave is only open 10am-2pm I believe it said M,W, Sat and Sun. From there there is a pamphlet that has numbers correspond to markets along trail. It points out cave and restoration efforts. We hiked beyond where the Waiopili Stream meets ocean. We kept going walking along beach past house where you come to a cove. Here we saw a baby seal!! A 7 week old female playing with a stick! There was another 2 yr old female. A volunteer told us about both of them. We turned around at this point. There looked like a small parking area at the cove beach area and you could hike on about another mile. Fantastic!!! Take water and sunscreen. Have your camera ready!

Great hike

By Immerenga |

I just loved the hike towards the cave. The scenary is mostly just stunning. So many great cliffs. We were able to see many turtles and even spotted a ray in the open sea. The way takes about 90 minutes, including a couple of stops on the way there.

Easy to get to, easy to hike, big payoff views!

By Emily H |

This is an easy hike with beautiful views the entire route. You can stand on the edges of the cliffs and take in the crashing waves and salt air. We parked just outside of the Grand Hyatt and walked down to the beach to the entry point. There is really no main entry, but you will see a lot of folks headed up the trail. If you come down to the beach from the Grand Hyatt take a left until you get to the big rock - then start hiking up! Take your camera as the views are worthy of a framed photo once you get home. There are no trash cans so don't take food & beverage unless you have a backpack to stow it in until you get back. Also, don't be silly and wear flip-flops! Have fun! My Favorite Trail on Kauai

By Patricia C |

Starting at Shipwreck Beach, this trail heads up to the place where one can jump off the rock into the ocean. Yes, I skipped that part. Continue on the trail for a spectacular walk along the ocean cliffs. You can go 2 miles from Shipwreck to a lovely secluded beach or turn around at any point. After about the first 3/4 to 1 mile, you have the ocean on one side and a golf course on the other. Plan to stop frequently for photo ops. Some years ago we were able to drive a dirt road back to the beach at the end (great for pick-up if you didn't want to walk the 2 miles back) but this year it was not possible to get back there, as there was a gate across the road.

Gorgeous Ocean Cliff Views!

By PlayinCO |

This is a great place to see and spend a few hours hiking and exploring! We drove down to Shipwreck Beach and found the trail pretty easily. No markers, but this wasn't a problem for us. The views were spectacular, and there was hardly anyone we ran into the whole time. We ended our hike on a fairly secluded beach past the golf course. We spent lots of time along the way looking at the view, taking photos, sea shell collecting, looking at crabs and fish. We did bring some water, but mostly ran out by the time we reached the beach. We wished we had e brought backpacks with more water, food and towels, as spending more time at the beach would've been great! The only reason I put 4 stars instead of 5, is that it would've been great to find a porta potty along the way, a trail marker, a water fountain...something. We couldn't even get an Uber for the way back (no service), so we made it through w/sharing the last water. We should've been more prepared, but really didn't know what we were in for when we started. The views were just so amazing, we kept going!

Best. Run. Ever.

Arrived in Kauai late last night with last leg of our flight almost 7 hours. Ran the trail with my daughter this am and it was absolutely stunning. Exactly what we needed to start our day!

Spectacular Coastal Hike

By pfefmeister |

This coastal hike - about 4 miles round trip from Shipwreck Beach - is the perfect hike, with easy trails, overwhelming vistas, historic sites, and three nice beaches at the end - though the surf was too rough for me to enter the water. Photo opportunities at every step, this hike is a thousand times better than the overrated Canyon Trail in Waimea State Park. Note that there are many trails to walk on, we tended towards the ocean cliffs on the way out it, and the forest trails on the way back. The trail ends at a rock abutment. I would definitely classify as easy, other than the distance, the elevation gain/loss is insignificant. Of course bring water and your suit!

Favorite day hike

By delidog |

This is one of my favorite day hikes in Kauai. It leads to beautiful beaches, with only a few dozen people, as opposed to the hundreds you find at Poipu. The trail to the cliffs is wonderful, includes a dry blow hole, wildflowers and whale watching!

Rugged and Agreeable

By Veronica Hunter |

The Maha'ulepu Heritage Trail is rugged and agreeable. The trail took me to the top to admire the color of the ocean and huge rock formations on a beautiful clear day.

A Great Introduction To Kauai

By Linda P |

This set the tone for our Kauai vacation. A beautiful walk along cliffs, a golf course, the ocean and more. It is pretty exposed so be sure to wear a hat and bring plenty of water. Some of the cliff areas are somewhat precarious so be careful not to go to close the edge, lots of warning signs. We started at Shipwreck Beach and did the entire trail, you could turn around at any point though. A must do for all abilities.

What a beautiful adventure!

By Princess279 |

We started on the trail at sunrise - the best suggestion from reviews! The multiple paths can leave you disoriented at first, but watch your step, stay close to the oceanside, and you'll be fie. We wore sneakers, long sleeve shirts and long pants, but packed a towel, swimwear, and flip-flops with us (totally the way to go!). The backpack was handy in bringing a ton of water and some snacks for later. Don't get discouraged when you start guessing where the path will lead you. We skipped the cave (was too early - they don't open it until 10am). Once we came to a beautiful beach, where the river met the ocean, we switched into the beach gear and kept going (finding a couple of cool sea shells made it even more interesting). We set up camp at the end of the sand, where there's a little beach between the rocks, shaded with gorgeous pines. After some playtime in the water and snacking, back we went towards the Shipwreckbeach. FYI, the path didn't stop where we did, and if the sun didn't beat on us as soon as we stepped out of the shade, we'd kept going until running out of the path. Maybe the next time...there definitely will be the next time! This is a MUST-DO on Kauai!

Nice Trail for a Morning Walk!!

By JPDallas |

Nice easy trail starting right at Grand Hyatt: relatively flat and about 3.7 miles round-trip along the ocean. Some parts were on the neighboring golf course. Different cliff formation along the way. Good wave watching.

Fun user-friendly trial with outstanding views

By kimgd |

Our group of three, late 50's-early 60's girlfriends, loved this trial while spending the day in Poipu from Princeville. We picked up the trial from the Grand Hyatt parking lot which also provides a public restroom for changing for dinner afterwards. The trail is somewhat of a hike-your-own-path as there are no trail markers, however, you can simply follow the ocean's edge which will award you with stunning views. Obviously, watch your step as you can, literally, walk the cliff's edge. We ended our hike by relaxing on beautiful Shipwreck Beach.

Stunning View! Must see - Easy hike for everyone

By TruongFamily |

This was an easy 4 mile hike (round trip) with beautiful views entire route. Easy hike but sport shoes or water resistance shoes recommended. Worth a half day trip walking alone coastline; passing beautiful golf course at the end of the hike. This trail is next to the Grand Hyatt.

Nice Ocean Trail from Shipwreck Beach

By mariedesjardins |

Hiked this trail one am in June 2018. Starts at Shipwreck beach and passes by the Hyatt. Nice views of the crashing waves and lava that has hardened. Saw some sea turtles.

Scenic coastal views

By jellybellymelly |

We parked at The Point near to the Hyatt. You'll walk past the Hyatt onto the beach and an unmarked trail into the woods - there are lots of people doing this trail, so not to worry. Do wear proper shoes as you'll be hiking through the woods and also on rocky terrain. We turned back halfway as the scenery appears to be the same. Do budget an hour one way for this trail.

2nd best hike!

By Krista R |

Beautiful! So much variety in shoreline, rocks, cliffs, caves. Beautiful!!! Hope to be back. Ends at huge bay beach. Say sea turtle, crabs, sea slugs, etc

Beautiful trails

By captcalculus |

And there are lots of them, weaving in and out, so it might be easy to get lost, except you always have the ocean on one side. Lots of pretty scenery.

gorgeous views!

By Megan H |

we didn’t get to finish the trail because we were running out of time before our flight, but it was absolutely gorgeous throughout! it was sunny and HOT, so we tried to stay in the wind to keep cool—if we could’ve hopped in the ocean at the end instead of heading to the airport, definitely would have been better:) wish we could’ve finished and highly recommend!

Beautiful!

By Sondra P |

Relatively easy hike, sandy and rocky. Bring water it gets hot out there, wear a hat. Beautiful views along golf course.

quick, easy

By Laura S |

my husband and i did this walk maybe 2 or 3 times. it's super easy, lots of different pathways and beautiful views from the cliff. you can decide to turn around at any point, or just park it on a bluff and watch the views. super easy for children.

Beautiful views all along the way

By freetobe50 |

We enjoyed this hike very much. Although really hot and sunny in spots, it was most enjoyable. Bring water. I'm glad that the reviews were so descriptive and led us to this positive experience. Warning....it was a little tricky to find through GPS.
Maps of the trail are available at the Grand Hyatt. Another great website to help with this trail and others would be alltrails.com. Check that out. You can send information right to your phone. (Discovered after we got home.)

Beware of very dangerous golf balls

By Aki N |

This is a beautiful hike, however, the golf course that borders part of the hike is DANGEROUS! My husband was hit by a golf ball so hard that it broke the skin. We saw a family with a young baby, and if the baby had been hit, it could have been a serious injury. I don't recommend this hike at all.

Do it often

By Lauren M |

This is a wonderful trail following the south shoreline with easy parking access adjacent to the Hyatt and Shipwreck Beach. Numerous paths provide lots of variety so that you can do it often without getting bored. All paths go in the same direction so you don’t have to worry about getting lost. Best to go early to avoid heat. It’s windy most days—be careful not to lose your hat. Great for dogs on leash. Plan for about 2 hours, more if you go as far as Secret Beach or the Cave. Nice elevations for all ages without being difficult. Great views with the opportunity to see turtles and whales. What’s not to love?

Great trail to hike, but be careful taking kids!

By 451DennisM7 |

The trail starts at Shipwreck Beach and effectively ends at Gillin's Beach. However, you can continue walking along the seashore after you get to Gillin's beach. I highly recommend good footwear for the hike because of the length of the hike and rocks on the trail. Part of the trail is among large sand dunes, part of the trails is along rocky cliffs overlooking the ocean and part adjacent to a golf course. If you take children on this trail, be very careful because there are steep drop offs into the ocean along the trail with rocks below. Be sure and take sunscreen because most of the trail is exposed and take lots of water with you because there are no places along the trail to get water. The scenery along the trail is outstanding, but the trail is not very well marked and it's easy to lose the trail and find yourself in a dead end or taking off inland away from the shoreline. if you plan on hiking the entire trail, expect to take several hours, especially if you want to explore the isolated beaches at the end of the trail which I highly recommend.

Exceeded my modest expectations

By DGC2013 |

A very bumpy, dirt road for maybe 4 miles but worth the discomfort. Only one road so keep going you won't get lost. There are a few other parties enjoying the hike or secluded beach so you are not alone which was comforting. Nice sandy beach and dramatic black lava cliffs spraying up the ocean surf. Very beautiful! So why 5 stars? While hiking we saw a kite surfer take on the wind and waves. We saw a very large Monk Seal sunning himself. We quietly, slowly walked around in the vegetation because we were only 7 to 8 feet away on this narrow beach. As we passed safely by, a man coming from the other direction was too busy watching the kite surfer and almost stepped on the Monk Seal. It reared up it's head and snarled at the man whom was caught off his guard. Wow! We found a tiny cove with some swimmers but went further to take pictures of the black lava clliffs with the ocean spray. Great picture spot. Taked to a local man fishing for Giant Travelli he said he had caught an 80 pounder there once. He warned us that it was unsafe to swin here because of the powerful circular rip current, but people don't realize it. He said a friend of his drowned here. A very interesting time here today off the beaten track!

stunning views but a windy day

By dom1947 |

i climbed the rock trials to the top.i did the trial a few years ago but it seemed a harder climb but i turned 70 so i am not as spry as i once was.i walked the bluffs and enjoyed some beautiful scenery .it was so windy it blew my hat off as well as my glassed.i did not realize i lost my glasses until later and was not able to retrace my steps.there kare so many trials to travel so leading to the cliff.i tried to stay somewhat back as i di not wnt the wind to make me lose my footing.i walked as far as i couldbut i was tiring and did not want to take any careless chance.i enjoyed looking down to the ocean and to the horizon.the beauty of the sites were beyond compare.i wish i was 25 years younger and would have down the whole trial instead of 50 percent.this was a worthwhile adventure even losing my glasses.

the views!!!!!!!!!!!! don't skip this one - easy for kids

By TexasGingerbread |

I wish we had done this on our first day in kauai. It begins at Shipwreck Beach which is where we were staying (Hyatt) and it continues along the coastline. Make time for this gem! The views are amazing!! And we saw rainbows all along the way. So beautiful. My favorite trail to date in the entire world.

Easy trail with the best views!

By SheSavesSheTravels |

First of all, any trail that starts at a beach is a win in my book. You can enter the trail from shipwreck beach, at the clearing in the trees near the cliff.

The trail is 2 miles long but you can get great views all along so you could cut it short. The trail is easy enough for kids or inexperienced hikers.

Good shoes or water shoes are recommended, but I did see plenty of people wearing sandals too.

Grab sunblock and some bottled water. You’ll want to spend some time soaking up the views.

You can do the trail in 1/2 day, which is a nice option if you’ve got a lot planned on your trip to Kauai.

Breathtaking views!

By Amanda B |

We started at Shipwreck beach and went up the cliff. There are multiple trails/ networks of trails to choose from. We chose to go along the edge of the cliff on the way to the cave, because the views are breathtaking. The easiest part is when the trail goes along the golf course, but then it gets rockier. We’re talking jagged rocks that you do not want to trip or fall on. We made it to the cave and the tortoise sanctuary, highly recommend going all the way. Make sure you wear sunscreen and bring plenty of water. I would not take my younger kids on this hike but my husband and I really enjoyed it!

Great fun and great view!

By Alaskamaria |

This is a one of a kind trail that goes right along the lithifire cliffs from the far side of the Grand Hyatt Hotel by the Poipu golf course and by a Hawaiian "heinous" or holy site. You walk right next to the ocean, see crazy rock formations and often turtles playing in the water below. It is often windy there, great in the summer. Make sure to bring sunscreen and water!

Wonderful scenic trail

By Lynn H |

Wonderful trail along the cliffs and to the beach. History and geology. Pick up a brochure on the trail- it adds to the enjoyment.

Easy fun sunset hike

By Johnny_A916q |

I’d recommend this for any age group or active lifestyle. Easy to wake along the beautiful east coast of island. Unbelievable views around every corner.

Outstanding Coastal Hike

By Don M |

This a beautiful coastal hike that most anyone can do, but don’t go unprepared. We took our time, taking lots of pictures—total time just over three hours. Take plenty of water—83 degrees and sunny; we each drank three 16.9 ounce bottles of water. Hiking shoes work best as there are quite a few areas with sharp volcanic rock underfoot. Weekdays are best to find parking at Shipwreck Beach.

Beautiful Hike along the Ocean!

By Tom B |

Spectacular views along this moderate trail. Did not have time to make it all the way past the golf course but what we saw was amazing.

Great hike!

By Tara M |

This was our last hike in the islands, and it was very different from the previous 40 miles we had hiked on lava and through the jungle. Great lookout at Shipwreck Beach, and a quick hike with varied terrain and a nice beach at the end. Watch out for golf balls as the trail skirts part of a local golf course.

Decent Hike

By Charles K |

We have both run and hiked the trail. Great view and it goes on forever with many options from single track to large expansive sand areas

Fantastic early in the day hike!

By Becky B |

Had a fantastic time meandering along this trail. Often the path divides in a variety of directions but it all comes back together. Offers variety as you hike out and back. Cliffs are breathtaking! Enjoyed watching sea turtles and whales! Bring your water bottle.

A favorite

By Brenda T |

We have enjoyed walks along this trail bordering the beach each time we visit - this time no exception. It's beautiful for a morning stroll or afternoon walk. Views of ocean, cliffs, golf course, beach...you can make it as tricky or as easy as you like.

Excellent and easy to navigate trail along the ocean side.

By Matt B |

This is a worthwhile half day or so round trip walk along the ocean side, atop and beside some interesting and sometimes lithified dunes. Multiple heritage sites, beautiful views and some great beaches on either end.

Gorgeous hike!

By Brandi M |

This was such a beautiful hike. We didn’t make it all the way because we didn’t have enough time but it’s a great hike with great views. Someone else said something about a “choose your own adventure” and that’s true. There are a lot of paths that basically all meet up at some point so you can do most/all of the hike near the cliffs or in the forested area that abuts.

Great views of the coast and waves

By Nichole W |

This trail gives you a great view of Kauai's southern coastline. Watching the waves crash onto the rocks as you hike along the shore is so amazing! Go early in the day and take lots of water to drink.

A fabulous coastline hike! Great way to spend half a day.

By Vermonters210 |

We hiked the Maha'ulepu Heritage Trail twice: the first time we went only as far as the stables because we started a bit late in the afternoon. We started the second hike in the morning and did the entire Trail. It is awesome! We parked at Shipwrecks Beach and walked down to the beach heading to the left (as you face the water) and saw the cliffs that you climb to begin the hike. Please note that this is not a marked trail but it is a well-traveled trail - actually multiple footpaths - along the coast. You'll want to wear good hiking shoes/boots; and obviously take water and sunblock. The day that we hiked the entire trail was a windy and hot day. The waves were crashing, loudly and vigorously, against the cliffs. At times, we could feel the spray. Oh, the beauty! The rugged coastline and the endless ocean; the bushes and vegetation hugging these lithified sand dune cliffs; the pinnacles of rock; the erosion of the stone; the beach and mountains in the distance = all of this is breath-taking! As you hike along, you will eventually come to a Heiau (we saw several of these on our hikes in Kauai). The heiau is believed to have been a place of worship by the ancient people. Then the hike will take you onto the edge of the Po'ipu Bay Golf Course for a few hundred yards. We saw Nene here on both of our hikes. Then you're back into a grass tunnel as the hike heads towards Punahoa Point where we saw people fishing high above the water on these cliffs. Once past the stables that you can see on your left as you continue down the trail, you will come to the Makau-wahi Sinkhole and Cave system. While you can view the sinkhole from above, if the gate is open, you can actually crawl on hands-and-knees into one of the caves where you can stand up and then walk into the open sinkhole. We were fortunate that the entry was open the day we were there with a "docent of sorts" explaining about the caves and accompanying us into the larger caves. Awesome! The docent also told us about the reforestation program with indigenous plants in effect and told us to check out the tortoise enclosure once we left the cave area. We walked over to and then into (yes, people are welcome to climb up the little ladder and over the fence) into the tortoise enclosure; we saw at least 5 tortoises, one of which walked right up to and then right by us. Thereafter, we walked along the Wai-o-pili Stream out to Maha'ulepu Beach. We sat under the trees and had lunch as we watched the waves pounding the beach. Then we walked along the beach for a while before retracing our steps back along the coast to Shipwrecks Beach. A truly wonderful way to spend half a day!

Wonderful hike

By 3doglovr |

This is a marvelous hike along the coast. Lots to stop and see along the trail. Make sure to bring water and snacks and wear good sunscreen. We love watching for whales during whale season and on off season gawking at turtles and shorebirds.

Gentle hike with amazing views

By sheamartin9 |

Really enjoyed this hike down to Gillin's beach. It was not very difficult and well worth it. The views were magnificent .

Great hike

By IanF2 |

I’ll try and not repeat what others have said in their reviews. In summary a very worthwhile hike. Allow 3 hours which includes tour of cave and visit to tortoises. NOTE: as of dec 18, 2018 they are now offering guided tours of cave and sinkhole 7 days a week starting at 10am. Just turn up and make a donation afterwards. The other major point to note is that it’s easy to miss the cave/sinkhole if you are not looking for it. So, after a couple of miles you get to the stables on your left and you can see a long stretch of beach. As you approach the beach you need to look out for sigh saying “foot trail”. If u miss it don’t worry just go on to the beach and as you cross the stream in the southern corner you will see a track leading to a small bridge. From there follow the numbered markers. There is a small opening to one small part of the cave which brings you out into the sinkhole. If you are there between 10 and 2 it should be open. A guide will offer to show you around. The tortoise enclosure is also pretty cool. You go back over the bridge in an easterly direction. Walk 60 feet. It’s on your left. Walk over fence and get your selfie with the large African tortoises. The Long Beach is also lovely and at time of writing has a monk seal on it. The track is confusing the whole way so don’t worry about trying to find “the” track. Just follow your nose you’ll be fine. All roads lead to Rome. Leave by 830am to avoid the worst of heat and to be at the cave by 9am. Keep a look out on the way. We saw whales turtles and lots of cool birds

Our last dayin Kauai... Cherry On Top.

By ben s |

We tackled many trails/hikes while in Kauai but non more picturesque than the M-Heritage trail. It was actually our final trail on the island before going back home. To find the trail I would recommand getting the All Trail App. The App would take you to an enterance of Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort.
The trailhead is hard to pinpoint but once you find your way towards the ocean you can keep going until you find yourself on the most spectacular scenary. You can hang out by the cliffs and hope to see the whales or as we notices gazing at turtles swimming the vicinity. The trail hugs the coast on one side and Poipu Bay Golf Course on the other.

Great views of the beautiful coast line

By BST0817 |

Wanted to do some hiking on Kauai, and found this trail not far from our hotel in Poipu. Well marked and beautiful views of coast line, rock formations, beaches and ocean. We enjoyed this more than the Kalalau trail as it was dry, not as crowded, with better views.

WOW! definitely recommend this one

By Isa S |

We really enjoyed this hike, the scenery was amazing, huge waves crashing along the coastal side...saw many sea turtles from a distance and we got to see the sunset upon our return to Shipwreck Beach. Absolutely stunning - highly recommend.

Small Cave- if you have extra time

By Lee G |

We drove a heavily wash-boarded road to park near the entrance of the Maha'ulepu Cave. There are no signs from the main road until you pass the stables on the dirt road past the Grand Hyatt. There weren't any signs from the beach area either! From facing the ocean you go left (north) on a path that goes into a treed area. There's shade, but the walk is still very hot and humid.
The entrance to the cave was muddy and wet from rain earlier in the day, and two members of our group decided not to crawl through. Being short, I went through in a squatted position. Have someone watch your progress so you don't stand up too early and bonk your head!
A gentleman inside gave a short (15 minute) tour/talk about the cave over the years. Another example of the force of water over time!
The tortoise area being used for reforestation is interesting. We were able to find four. It's harder to find the restrooms that are hidden past the tortoises and down a dirt road on the left.
A donation box asked for $10/per person for the visit.

Maha'ulepu Heritage Trail

By Deborah C |

Loved this hike. One of my favorites. I felt safe and that descriptions of trail were surprisingly accurate. My only regret was starting later in day and not bringing enough water.

Must do, beautiful views!

By sharad c |

This is the must do while on the island. Amazing views of the ocean and you can see sea turtles and dolphins if you're lucky. Easy hike up the cliff!

Really nice trail along the ocean with great views!

By Ron M |

This is a nice trail along the ocean that is not a difficult trail to hike. Beautiful views throughout the walk. Best to get there early to find a place to park.

coastal walk

By francisr255 |

beautiful walk along ocean -- some cliffs but can go slightly inland for more secure and less adventuresome walk. Of note are sacred sites along the way, once on the trail no cars to contend with. Beautiful vistas and you see the coastal ridge that separates the south shore from Lihue.

dangerous

By Tyrannosaur |

we had high expectations after reading the reviews, but were hugely disappointed with the segment to the east of Grand Hyatt. It was rocky, unmarked, uneven, with dangerous cliffs. My son sprained his ankle twice during the hike because of the rocky path. The paved segment to the west of Hyatt was pleasant, and you can see plenty of sea turtles poking head out of the water along the rocky coast.

Great hike next to the Hyatt!

By DomCanada |

We were staying at the Grand Hyatt and did this quick hike for about 15 min each way in the morning (basically until you get to see the golf course and the view of the mountain - beautiful!). You should definitely wear hiking shoes as it's rocky. Bring water too. And I think you can hike much further if you want but we turned about after about 15 min. Loved it!

Excellent Views and Hiking

By Dawn Champine Larzelier |

We spent most of the afternoon hiking this trail and taking pictures of the waves on the rocks below. The local fisherman were friendly. Some Jeepers rode into the trails and on the rocks. Definitely wear your sturdy shoes on this one as there is all kinds of rocky terrain not suitable for sandals.

Nice hike

By KatieZ995 |

We started this hike from Shipwreck Beach in Poipu where there is plenty of parking in the morning. Just a 2 minute walk leads to stunning cliffs and gorgeous views out to the Pacific.

moderately easy out-and-back with stunning views. great way to start the day.

By elizabeth j |

It was not well marked and was a bit challenging to find the trail since there are many paths that veer inward from the coast and can take you off track. We asked someone that looked like they knew where they were going to get on the right track. We saw monk seals, dolphins, whale spouts, nesting sea birds. Your shoes will get stained and bring lots of extra water. There are some rocky spots to navigate.

Diverse Coastal Hike

By starizer |

This was my 2nd favorite hike after the Kalalau Trail in Kauai though my husband didn't enjoy it as much bc we had to hike through sand which got into his hiking shoes. I enjoyed this hike bc of the many different terrains you get to walk through though it was odd having to walk through a golf course ...

We started at Shipwreck's Beach, which you can get to by heading to Ainakoa St towards the coast. There's a parking lot at the end of the road. There is a bathroom next to the parking lot. Note no bathrooms along the trail. The trail head is not clearly marked, but facing the ocean we headed left towards the cliffs which we climbed up and then the path will transform to sand dunes covered in many trees. I have to say along the hike it was confusing to know if we were walking on the right trail but I knew this was along the coast so we made sure we stayed close to the shore and didn't stray too far inland. Then eventually you walk through a sacred site and a golf course. We walked all the way to Makauwahi Cave Reserve though by the time we got there it was closed, but it was interesting to look at from outside. I believe there is a free tour at the cace so check out the hours of operation and plan your hike accordingly if you'll like to check it out.

Excellent scenery, easy trail

By CMRZR |

This is a great walk/hike on the south side. Unlike most of the hikes on the island, this is a flat walk along the coast with minimal elevation change. Full of excellent scenery. A long stretch of it is along the beach, so wear shoes you can take off or don't mind walking in the sand. Plenty of opportunity to cool off in the ocean or take a break on the beach. There is hardly any shade on this walk, so wear sunblock and bring plenty of water. The ocean breeze helps keep you cool.

Early Morning scenic Hike

By Boomerang409 |

Great way to start the day, walking from Shipwreck along the coast, enjoying views before it gets too hot. Secluded beaches! We took an SPCA dog for a "field trip" along the trail-it was stunning.

Gorgeous sunrise, great view of cliffs and waves

By puzzlegal |

We walked here one day for sunrise, and liked it so much we returned the next day. It's accessible from shipwreck beach (where there is a small public parking lot) and is an easy scramble to the bluffs. It's also a short walk from the Hyatt, if you are staying there.

Spectacular views along coastline

By MarceKMBA |

This was my favorite hike on Kauai. We walked a couple of miles of Kauai coastline - gorgeous! The trail starts at the end of Shipwreck beach, and isn't clearly marked, and does converge and diverge several times, but as long as you stay close to the coastline, you'll get to your destination with amazing views on the way. There is a cave at the end, but it's only open certain hours (9-2? a couple of days a week?). It was closed when we got there, but we were still able to walk the nature trail above and around it (created by a boy scout eagle project), and we crossed the stream to an area where they were working to restore native wildlife - to do so, they brought in african tortoises that eat the vegetation like extinct Hawaiian birds would have done - you can get pretty close to these tortoises by crossing a stream and going over a style. Recommend.

Stretch your legs

By Jeffrey D |

You can start this shoreline trail near the Hyatt and walk north over the lithified sand cliffs and along the edge of the golf course. Alternatively, you can drive past the golf course and park near the horse stables. It’s a short walk from there to the sinkhole/cave and then on to Gillins Beach. Stop to visit the African tortoises in the fenced area past the cave and before the beach. The beach is not particularly crowded most days, but there’s a fair amount of foot traffic on weekends.

Great views-tough paths to follow.

By Rick K |

The trails are hard to follow and are not well marked. The views are amazing if you are willing to go on some tough trails.

Stunning views, easy hike

By Sara M |

Start at Shipwreck Beach by climbing up the rock on the far left (looking at the water) end. Our kids climbed up and then called us & said "go put all the beach stuff in the car and come up here". WOW! Some of the prettiest views I've ever seen and a super-easy walk along the coast. We didn't go very far (just to where we could see the golf course), but would definitely take the time to do that on our next trip. A decent photographer (not me!) could get some incredible shots from here.

Fun walk great views 👌👌🌴🌴

By Max_Hogg07 |

This walk was very good we saw plenty of lizards in the woods the terrain was rocky and also sandy so steardy footwear is advised, further along you will encounter a small rock pool with fish and crabs living inside that was fun. You should now where to go as the trail can sometimes lead to deadends and tight paths along the cliffs so plan your route 🌴🌴🦀🦀🐟🐟

Gorgeous Coastel Hike

By Kim A |

This trail is rated Easy by some apps but know that you need to be prepared for elevation changes, rocks, tree roots and it can be strenuous to occasional hikers. Wear good sturdy shoes.
Now, that being said, it is totally worth the energy. You'll enjoy coastline views, a gold course view, and occasionally seeing sea turtles in the water.
We used the All Trails app and found it to be helpful.

Nice ocean-side trail

By James F |

This is a very nice ocean-side trail that stretches over two miles along the south coast of Kauai. It is terminated at Shipwreck Beach and near Maha'ulepu Cave. It provides breathtaking views of cliffs and crashing waves with a beach at either end. A portion of the trail is on the Poipu golf course.

There is not a formally marked trail. It wanders through pines and other vegetation. Just keep the ocean to your side and you will be OK. We did have some problems near the cave end of the trail when we followed the "wrong" trail for a while and ended up at a dead-end. We actually did the trail three times.

Parking is at the end of the road that separates the Grand Hyatt Resort and Poipu Golf Course.

Great walk along the cliffs to a nice beach

By Travelor1686 |

This is a walk that begins at the cliffs at Shipwreck beach, right next to the Hyatt. The "trail" is really more of a bunch of winding paths that all lead to the same place. You can walk along the cliffs or behind the cliffs as close or as far from the water as you like. We walked along the cliffs for absolutely fabulous views the entire time. If you do the whole thing, it's about 2 miles each way. Wear sneakers or hiking shoes as there are lots ups and downs, and branches and rocks. It's an easy hike that any age could do. At the end is a beach, although it's not great for swimming as it's rocky with big waves. Most hikes I've done end with an amazing view but this one has beautiful vistas and photo ops all along the way. It's a great activity for a half a day if you like to walk/hike.

A beautiful trail

By LisaMNUSA |

Go early, otherwise it's hot. Bring water and hat with you. The beaches along the way are beautiful, not much different from other beautiful beaches though. We walked along the trail and got coast views. On the way back, it was hot, we walked through the tail with shade without the coast views.

Beautiful gem!

By DayTrip585448 |

We stumbled upon this hike on the last day of our trip. It was fairly easy with well marked paths and absolutely breath taking views! We did not complete the entire trail but spent a couple hours just taking it all in. Great opportunities for beautiful landscape. A must do!

Fantastic Hike!!!

By Gary333888 |

First time to do this trail. Wow! What a great hike. Distance is good (we did about 6.5 miles out/in). The hike is not difficult by any standards. Beautiful views of the coastline (including Shipwreck Beach) throughout the hike. 2-3 beaches are accessible along the trail. There were a lot of comments about the trail being confusing. Yes, there are a lot of off-shoots that might be confusing, but if you just stay w/ the coastline and/or next tot he golf course, you cannot get lost. Towards the end, do visit the caves. There is a recommended donation when you do. We suggest you do the $10 pp donation to aid in the protection of that site.

Easy hike with spectacular views!!

By Amy K |

Beautiful hike with amazing views of the ocean!! Super easy hike that starts at Shipwreck beach. We went around 1pm on a clear day and we got pretty hot so didn't make it all the way to the cave. We did talk to one couple who hiked to the cave and were under-impressed so we were glad to didn't do the full hike. Took a lot of frame worthy pictures - definitely do this when visiting Kauai!! Shipwreck beach is small and seems to be more of a local beach with large waves and surfers.

This walk is a must!

By Sheryl S |

This is a gorgeous and easy hike. We love to do it on our first day when we are up early from the time change and watch the gorgeous sunrise. Just a magnificent way to start your vacation.

Easy, scenic, stunning views!

By Linda L |

If you’re in Poipu and have a couple of free hours, do this. It’s easy and follows the coastline, past stunning rock formations, beautiful sandy coves, and the perfectly manicured Poipu Bay Golf Course. It’s about 2 miles each way. We went as far as the sacred cave and then turned around. We started at 4:00 and got back to the trailhead at the beach in time to watch the sun set.

Access is from Shipwreck Beach, at the north end of The Hyatt. The trail meanders off in many directions, but you won’t get lost. Just do it!

Best easy trail in Kauai

By Gafilpoo |

This is a great trail. It's described as easy, but that is by west US standards. Any hike like this in the eastern US would be classified as moderate. The trail winds along the coast, including some dangerous cliffs, and a couple places where the overlooks are actually rocks that hang out over empty spaces in the shore. Be careful. Even those in our party with bad knees made it because, for the most part, it is not too steep. It crosses a golf course and ends at the Makauwahi Cave Reserve. I would recommend hiking boots as there are rocks to cross. But again, there were those in our party with sandals that made it just fine. Parking can be tight, as the parking lot is very small.

Beautiful easy hike

By Aimee E |

Pretty easy trial with quite a few incredible views from up high and visits back to the water down below. Parking near the Grand Hyatt is available and we hiked all the way down to Shipwreck Beach. Took lots of photos and spent some time just enjoying the views. Some steep drop offs so if traveling with smaller kids you’ll need to be in high alert or have them in a carrier. No stroller would survive this hike.

Beautiful Scenery

By Jean S |

My husband and I went to Maha'ulepa Heritage Trail on Friday 8/22/25. It was beautiful. We started at the parking lot near the Hyatt. The cave is closed but you can go up above and look down into it. Easy walk.

Start early!

By Graham Roberts |

As we were staying at the Hyatt, the trail was very accessible, and a nice hike. It is not difficult but you need good footwear for climbing over some rocks. All beside the sea with great outlooks, ending on a remote beach. Of course you then need to walk back as it is not a loop track.
We started early (06.30) but it was quite hot by the time we returned, so take plenty of water.

OMG, it was incredible!

By The_Rock_50 |

When the travel brochures says this trail is a “with a treasure-trove of geological and cultural sites”, believe them, omg, it was incredible!
Along the trail you will find the Makawehi Lithified Cliffs, Makauwahi Cave Reserve, dunes & fossils formations with a backdrop of roaring ocean waves blasting massive waves against the coastline! “Did you see that” becomes your mantra of sorts, next to “OMG”…. You might even caught a sighting of a Humpback Whale if you are lucky!

Needed-Good footwear, water , sunscreen, camera!

I would never get tired of this view

By Via_girl |

This trail, right along the water, offers the most spectacular views. It can take a few hours if starting at Shipwreck beach but can also be done in sections if you're willing to drive a bit further down a rough, gravel road. Part of it requires walking in deep sand so it's not like a regular walking trail. A must do if in the area.

Wear sturdy footwear and bring water!

By EANelson2014 |

This hike is beautiful. It was one of my favorites while I was there. Not that busy, amazing views, good mix of flat areas and hill/rocky terrain. It was breezy which was good, because without it you would be sweating in the mugginess. Make sure you bring enough water and wear your sunscreen!

Thrilling views

By GardenShore99 |

The trailhead at Shipwrecks beach is easy to identify. Parking at shipwrecks is limited so for that and to avoid the heat, go early. The prettiest part of the hike is before and up to the golf course. After the golf course which you walk along for a ways, the views are less significant and could be skipped. There are many sandy side trails that go along the main trail allowing you to get as close to the ocean as you want. You wont get lost. We took the side trail to the caves which was underwhelming because they were closed. If this is an interest, go on a day they are open. The views along this hike are very pretty. Trail feels very safe. While very little elevation change, there are some larger steps up and down so make sure you where good shoes. One of the hotter hikes we did. Bring water and go early.

Great sunrise hike

By RobReno |

Beyond the Hyatt there is a great hike anytime, but sunrise is the best! Trail is easy but rocky and sandy, so watch your step while you watch the sun rise.

Nice hike with amazing views

By Kathy-Keith S |

We started at Shipwreck Beach. We brought our 3 adult children. This was one of our favorite spots on the island. The trail is about 2 miles one way - very scenic. Plan to stop frequently for photo ops. Suggest taking this hike early before it gets crowded and hot. There are two paths - one a bit easier and the other a little more rocky and near the cliffs (would not recommend the harder path with young children because of the cliffs and terrain). Definitely recommend doing this hike - one of the highlights.

Beautiful views

By SissyBDublin |

We hiked this trail mid-morning. The views were amazing. We could see sea turtles floating along the coast. Parts of the trail have you walking along a golf course. This was beautiful as well. I recommend stopping off to see the tortoises at the farm just off the beach from the private house. We started the trail by the Grand Hyatt.

Another annual hike/walk

By Venture801490 |

Every year, 20 years, never ceases to amaze and remind me there is a Greater Power in our World.
A very cool rock memorial at one point. Amazing ocean views the whole way.
Great whale siting in season.

An flat, relatively easy hike

By Theresa B |

We did this hike from starting at shipwreck beach and ending at the cave. Check out the AllTrails website for details.

It was a great walk along the coast with interesting formations. Enjoyed visiting the cave at the end as well as the beautiful beach. (Just go over the small bridge you'll see when going to the cave).

A good trail for the family as it's not too strenuous.

Awesome views

By naturelover57 |

This area is the real Hawaii. No resorts, just great and fairly easy hiking along ocean cliffs to 3 gorgeous and unspoiled beaches.

Great trail

By Evelin H |

Great trail. Ends at the shipwreck at the Hyatt.Beautiful scenery and up and down hills overlooking the mountain , by the ocean,Just breath taking.

The real shipwreck isn't here

By Alinschen |

We started searching for the shipwreck but couldn't find it. During this search we made this trail which starts in the back of the shipwrecks Beach in Poipu. These 3,7 miles (6 km) are an easy trail but we hiked just close to the golf course area as we thought this is strange and so we hiked back. As we just wanted to search for the shipwreck we realized a little late that we are on a trail so we had no water with us. Never forget to take enough water with you. Oh the shipwreck is at a beach in Niihau not Kauai as we found out.

Mahaulepu Heritage Trail

By Kelly T |

Make sure to bring a hat, sunscreen, snack and two liters of water each. I love the views. It is easy to get away from others.

Beautiful cliff, ocean views

By hjmartin24 |

We started our hike just after sunrise at Poipu Beach. We walked down the boardwalk, through the neighborhood, then joined the trail at a condo resort. We followed the trail to Mahaulepu Beach, about 3.5 miles.
The trail hugs the coast, is well-defined and relatively easy. There are a few small inclines, but only a few steps in length. It walks along lava floor, sea cliffs, boardwalk, through some forest, and along a golf course.

The scenery changes every few steps and is a fantastic way to see the coastline and the mountains (and some turtles!). The beach was nearly empty, but the waves were too big to do much swimming that day.

We had our family pick us up at CJM stables when we were done. You could park at the stables and walk either direction along the trail. Or park at any of the places along the trail and pick it up and then just turn around when you’re ready to head back.

Overall, this “hike” was one of our favorite things we did this trip - highly recommend it for anyone looking to get outside, take a break from the beach, stretch your legs or see another view of the island.

Spectacular!

By Robin G |

Great views, secluded beaches, and you can see sea turtles from the cliffs above, that's how clear the water is.

Very nice - good for the whole family

By Mark P |

Great walk that lets you choose how far you want to go out and back. We left Shipwrecks beach and went two miles along the cliff tops looking at the amazing shoreline and the power of the ocean. Awe inspiring. Had fun walking along Poipu Bay Golf course and decided to turn around at the stables at the two mile mark. The hike out was dead into cooling trade winds but the hike bath along the true trail was brutally hot. Soaked down at the beach side shower when done to cool off. Nice that this trail should be manageable by almost all family members.

Highly Enjoyable Easy Trail

By Thomas W |

Great views from the cliffs every step of the way. We saw lots of turtles down in the various coves. Gets some bad pub because it goes along the Hyatt and later the Poipu Bay golf course, but very well worth the time.

Beautiful Walk

By Marie R |

We really enjoyed this walk along the ocean. Beautiful scenery including plants, flowers and of course the gorgeous Pacific Ocean. The portion we walked was an easy walk.

Beautiful views the whole way

By Dawn C |

We found this trail thanks to TripAdvisor when we were looking for something to do that only took a couple of hours. We regretted that we didn't have a little more time to spend around the cave / tortoise end of the trail. The terrain is not difficult for most, although if you have any trouble with balance or tripping hazards you may want a walking stick of some sort, as the ground is uneven and rocky in some places. Very lovely trail for an afternoon jaunt.

Don't Miss This One!

By patsjag28 |

This is seriously one of the most beautiful hikes I've ever done. We began at the Grand Hyatt and walked along the beach leading to cliffs with incredible views of the ocean. It gets a bit confusing because the trail splits at different points. Stay along the coast for the best views. Some people were wearing flip flops. PLEASE DON'T. That's just dumb. There are parts where you must walk on rocks and sand quite close to the edge. One slip and you're in trouble. You can easily stay away from the edge, so don't let that deter you. On a nice day, its very sunny along the cliffs, so a hat or baseball cap and sunglasses will help along with water.
It's a rather easy hike but I would be leery about bringing small children. Keeping an eye on them while trying to enjoy the views is just too difficult. There are a lot of hiking trails on the island but don't miss this one!

Most scenic & enjoyable trail in Hawaii!

By Brian R |

After traveling thru the main 4 islands of Hawaii, as well as having done this trail twice, I consider this to be the most family friendly and enjoyable scenic trail of all. The Kalalau trail is more legendary and equally, if not more, spectacular but it isn’t as easily accessible and is much more technical. Maha’ulepu trail is easier to reach and can be long (2+ hours) or short (<1 hr) depends on your preference and skill level. But almost anyone can enjoy the beautiful ocean view that is constant and dramatic cliffs along the trail as well as occasional sighting of turtles surfing in the ocean. We were lucky to even spot a few whales some distance away. Despite only part of the trail being shaded, the proximity to the sea offers constant ocean breeze which makes it soothing and more pleasant. I would highly recommend this trail to anyone visiting Kauai to put this trail on their “must do” list. Highly unlikely to regret it!

Such a beautiful hike!

By Alheonu |

We loved this hike. There were so many exquisite views along the way. Bit tricky to find the trail at times. Definitely takes time, so bring sufficient water and food.

Great amazing experience!

By Iris Mae A |

The Maha'ulepu Heritage Trail was an incredible experience during our honeymoon, and we definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Kauai! The trail offers a variety of beautiful stops and lookouts along the way, with breathtaking views of the coastline and the ocean. We really enjoyed the scenic beauty and the peaceful atmosphere—it’s the kind of place where you can truly appreciate nature.

One of the highlights for us was stumbling upon a heart-shaped rose petal display along the trail. It seemed like a special spot, possibly set up for couples staying at the nearby Grand Hyatt Hotel for photoshoots. It added such a lovely, romantic touch to our hike.

Along the trail, we also discovered a nice tidepool down below, though getting there required navigating a small sand dune area. The tidepool was a peaceful spot to take in the views, and the calm waters were perfect for a quick stop to relax.

We didn’t have a lot of time to fully explore the trail, and in hindsight, we wish we had started earlier to make the most of it. There’s so much more to see, and we’d definitely love to come back next time to hike the full trail and enjoy all the sights it has to offer.

Overall, the Maha'ulepu Heritage Trail was a memorable and beautiful experience. If you’re in the area, make sure to add it to your list of must-do activities—it’s definitely not to be missed!

Excellent!

By momdzall |

Started at Shipwreck Beach, followed the path closest to the ocean. Absolutely gorgeous views. Luckily we had our binoculars, saw probably 30 whales. Saw numerous sea turtles. Definitely would not recommend wearing flip flops! Terrain very rough with lots of rocks. Our Keene's did well. Went all the way to the cave and saw the tortoises! About 4 mile hike, round trip and absolutely loved it! Was glad we froze out water bottles beforehand!

need to research so you catch it all

By Anne G |

start at pirates beach poipu. walk south. if you get lost head to the little white cottage. easier access is to drive to the horse farm and park there. on the walk you pass a heiau, turtles in the water, then you see the cottage and follow signs to Makauwahi Cave . once you have done that come out, turn left and go and see he giant african tortoises. this walk is short and easy but very much about searching for the high lights.. they are not obvious

Easy hike with a fantastic view of the ocean!

By adirondack1 |

This hike was very close to the southern end of Kauai where we were staying so within five minutes we were on the trail looking out at the ocean while walking along the edge. As reviewers before me have pointed out, it is an easy but worthwhile hike. I would only recommend that you turn around when you reach the golf course because I think you've already seen the best views and secondly the manicured course was a bit incongruous next to the rugged shoreline.

Great short hike with amazing views

By CaymanCarole |

If you want a relatively short hike with great views, try this one. Go past the Hyatt and the road curves around, past the golf course. You'll find free public parking near Shipwreck Beach. Head east, up a hill and then follow the trail at the top of the cliffs. You can get a well annotated trail map that describes geological features, plants, etc. from your hotel concierge. Great view of the ocean. Just walk as far as you want and turn back. If you did the whole trail, it's about 2 miles out and 2 miles back. Bring sunscreen and water. The breeze at the top is refreshing but can be deceiving as to how much sun you are really getting. I recommend sneakers, not sandals but I saw plenty of people who did this with sandals.

HOT!

By JV2006 |

Great workout in the blistering sun. There are parts that are shaded but you will need lots of water for this one. We walked down to the tidepools and saw a lot of fish, sea cukes, crabs, etc. We took the main road near the stable back after the cave because it was even hotter by the time we were done there.

Pretty Coastal Walk, But Hot

By Alison K |

Nice coastal views! We did not walk the whole thing since it was hot already even in the morning. We walked a little ways and turned around and drove to the tortoise sanctuary and cave reserve. There are some trees and bushes that provide some shade.

Excellent interpretive boards help to understand what life was like before Europeans. There has been more work done since I last visited. It is easily accessible. Lots of local and regional support has made this possible.

Stunning views

By RickandDenise9 |

We completed this hike two days in a row and without doubt I’d make this a daily thing. I don’t think you could tire of the views, easy walking and you can do at whatever pace that your into.
The trail goes and goes and you pick where to stop. Take time to search for turtles and you will see some for sure.

Enjoy 😊 🇨🇦

What a view!

By mkr1227 |

We found this trail just passed the Hyatt hotel. it is a bit hidden. there is a parking lot.We are not avid hikers, nor are we young--but found this trail easy to navigate for any age person. The views of the coastline are magnificent, and you can go as far as you want. It was not crowded when we went on a Friday morning. We hardly saw anyone on it. Highly recommend it. Tip: To find the lot, we looked on google maps, found the Hyatt and you can see it clearly

Gorgeous Views!

By Beachgirl42 |

This is one of my favorite Kauai hikes with breathtaking cliff views along the sea. We started at Shipwreck Beach. The hike isn’t difficult, but be aware of uneven terrain and drop offs while you’re looking ahead and viewing the dramatic seascape! You can choose trail options that are further from the edge. Highly recommend.

beautiful trail but sometimes hard to navigate

By harbrsl |

i had incredible weather for this hike and i loved every minute of seeing the blue blue of the water and the light changing the color of the orange in the cliffs. it is a beautiful hike that ends at a really nice beach.

my only issue was that the trail was hard to follow at times, to the point that i was literally looking for footprints in the sand. there were some hazards with tree roots as well. just a few well placed markers would serve everyone well, especially if they aren't local.

Breathtaking Views

By Holli S |

Warning first-
Do not put Maha'ulepu Heritage Trail into Google Maps. It puts you in the middle of the town. Well, actually, you end up at this amazing macadamia nut store where the lovely sales woman gives samples and accurate directions to Shipwreck Beach. (Do put that into your Google Maps, unless you want to try delicious macadamia nuts and butters from the Kauai Gourmet Nut store.)
This is a magnificent easy trail. I would still recommend sneakers because you will be on craggy cliffs. The views are spectacular.

Do it!

By Paul L |

We hiked the portion from the Hyatt/Shipwreck Beach east to the horse ranch, great hike / walk , very braided trail, killer views, amazing cliffs, saw some turtles, yes, part of it is along/on the golf course, but it’s not supposed to be death defying, enjoy, bring water. Parking is congested, but it is everywhere.

Great trail with fabulous views!!

By Debra H |

The trail is easy and has spectacular views!! Definitely must do this hike!! We actually did the hike twice because it was so pretty and we were trying to avoid the rain that was all over the rest of the island.

Fairly easy hike along ridge line

By LOMike |

Great hike that overlooks wonderful beaches and views of verdant hills (and if you are lucky, as we were) surfacing whales in the distance.

Great coastal views

By Bill2100 |

The trail provides some fantastic views of the coastline near Poipu. The scenery is truly incredible. You also pass by heiau sites that are very interesting. The trail could use a bit more maintenance, there are times when the vegetation pretty much covers the entire trail. There are also places where the trail splits in two or three directions, without any indication of which is the real trail. With that said, it was very easy to keep moving in the proper direction.

Beauty no words can describe

By asophie0936 |

Fairly easy hike/walk along the coast of poipu. Hard to find the beginning but if tou park your car at the grand hyatt hitel and you go to the beach, the trail starts at the left end of the beach (if you face the ocean). Right frim the start, beautiful cliffs unfold... it took us about 2 hrs to get to the deserted beach and tortoise sanctuary (we did stop a lot for pictures!). I recommend this trail to everyone...

Scenic but hot!

By Sue S |

We spent about 3 hours on this 4 mile round trip hike along the coastline, starting at the Hyatt. It was relatively flat but quite hot in the sun. We left around 10 am and
got back by 1pm taking the cooler shaded forest path on the way back. There were lots of opportunities for watching tortoises and taking tons of photos of the shoreline. We also had a refreshing swim at Gillian's beach and spent about 20 minutes in the cave with a local guide. Tips: 1) bring at least 1 L of water per person if you are going in the middle of the day, 2) bring good running shoes or hiking boots (flip flops won't cut it), 3) bring a swim suit for Gillian's beach and 4) bring $5 per person for the cave ( the recommended donation). It was a lovely hike with great views. The trails aren't always marked clearly, however, it would be pretty difficult to get lost, since you are walking by a golf course and a coastline!

Beautiful trail - an easy hike

By Ingrid |

This is an easy trail along the coast - a bit confusing as there are different paths but they all seem to meet up along the coast. Can either park by the horse ranch and head back along the coast to the Hyatt or you can park at the lot by the Hyatt and start from the trail there. We saw whales breaching along the big rock where it starts at the left of the Hyatt. It's a 2 mile hike - when you get past the golf course, you come to a bushy area - many people turned back but if you keep going, you will get to the caves which was interesting to see and just beyond that, the land tortoises are truly amazing. Ask the cave rangers how to get to the tortoises. If the rangers aren't working, can follow the little bridge after the caves and you will see a short 4 green steps going over the wired fence. Climb over and search for the land tortoises hiding under the trees - others are in their pens. The return trip without any stops is only 40 min. We took 2 hrs getting there because we took so many pictures. Well worth the time.

Breathtaking views!

By Kerri L |

beautiful hike, we saw sea turtles off the cliffs and the beach at the end was very nice! It was an easier hike but it was very hot the day we went so that made it more difficult so make sure to bring water.

Great easy hike

By passiontravelers |

Great hike along the coast. It starts at Shipwrecks beach. I would go early in the morning because parking can be limited and the sun can be brutal. Some of the trail is sandy and rocky so I would wear sneakers or hikers. There are wonderful views of the coast. We walked passed the golf course and then back. Total distance was about 2.8 miles. This was a very easy hike that almost anyone could enjoy.

Great saunter

By AugieD0ggie |

A wonderful walk. Walk as close to the shore as you can for the best views. Be careful as some areas are a bit eroded. Best time is early/mid morning otherwise it gets a bit warm. Total walk is about 5 miles if you go to the end of the trail and then turn around. Easy to turn around anytime.

Stunning hike along the coast

By Steph M |

Beautiful views at every turn! We loved walking this trail and enjoyed spending some time at the Maha'ulepu Beach, which was significantly less crowded than any other beach we visited. I would say it's a trail that is accessible to most fitness levels, though I would recommend close-toed shoes since there are some rocky spots.

Beautiful View while Hiking

By MrRu |

Very beautiful view. I started from Shipwreck Beach and hiking all the way to Maha'ulepu Beach. Pretty tired due to my age( late 50) but it is very well worth it Maha'ulepu is very beautiful and peaceful. I definitely will come back to this beach but by car not by hiking.

Great trail with great views

By TnJAdvents |

Great trail with all sorts of different terrain and views along the way. You can hike as little or as much as you like. We started at the Grand Hyatt and headed east for 3 miles so it was a good hike. To start if you want the easier route stay higher up. Not overly challenging but a very nice way to spend a morning before it gets too hot.

Awesome view but go early!

By kingmama |

As everyone says, especially if you go in the summer, get there early and bring lots of water! It’s a coastal walk, there is no shade. Can park in Grand Hyatt lot for free, go to concierge desk, they will give you a map and tell you where to start (basically go down to Shipwreck beach in front of hotel and go left to the cliff, and walk along the coast – not always a clear trail). People were cliff- jumping. Our teens (15 & 17) did that on Oahu and Maui 2 years ago, but here it was a bit of a swim back to the shore in mildly rough water here so we skipped that. The views are amazing, can shimmy down to the water in many places (to explore or cool off). We wore Keens hiking sandals which were fine, could walk right into the water to cool off, but the sand in sections was really soft and deep so had to take them off at times when it got tough to walk with a beach in your shoes! Took 1.5 hrs over, 0.5 back. We went to the point where we could see the beach (end of golf course) but didn’t go to it….getting hot and boys wanted to grab the boogie boards and hit the big waves on Shipwreck Beach. Had lunch at outdoor, casual Hale Nalu restaurant at Grand Hyatt. Standard resort prices, but food was very good and smoothies were excellent!

Beautiful stroll

By BanditTravels |

Start at the point of Poipu resort. Winds thru the Hilton next door then you get into the Sandy, uneven ground. Sneakers at least need to be written. Take lots of water. Preferably do in morning as there isn't much sun protection on the trail. Beautiful views. Well worth your time

Beautiful Views along this path

By aandmrun |

A walk along the ocean side is always great. This path gives you some history information along the way.

Awesome trail

By sleem50 |

Walked to see Cave and tortoises andanother day walked to see Monk seals! The road to trail is difficult - don't go too far unless you have all wheel drive!

Fun!

By Jaime T |

This was a fun trail to follow and explore. You can go as far as you want which was nice. We did this on our first day and there were lots to see!

Great CORVID-19 Hke!

By CaliTutu |

Do this at least once every year. With CORVID-19 we were looking for "safe distance" activities and this fit the bill. Beautiful and free!

A nice trail with a lower volume of tourists on it!

By Wilton W |

We discovered this trail by using Google Map, and drove to the nearby Hyatt Regency to connect to it. It is hiked by a very lower volume of traffic, as evidenced by the density of foliage along a somewhat narrow path. It was delightful to walk along, and then discover yourself very high over the ocean at a scenic lookout point on a cliff.

Breathtaking

By LPB627 |

This was the first time we hiked this trail. The trail is not that difficult to hike. It follows the coast with vistas of beautiful cliffs and rock formations. You can walk a trail right along the cliffs or follow a trail that is further from the edge if you have small children. This trail is a must do to appreciate the beauty of this island. We would recommend hiking in the morning when it is a little cooler.

Great hike!! Anyone can do this one! Beautiful views and a must do!

By wenturtle |

My sister and I decided to try this trail after trying the Kalalau Trail. We only made it 1/2 mile on the Kalalau, but did the full 4 mile round trip on this one. Only one or 2 hairy spots, but for the most part an extremely easy hike. All ages, as long as you can walk, will be able to do this hike. However, I strongly suggest sunglasses, a hat, snacks and plenty of water. There is almost no shade this entire hike, and the sun can be brutal. The views all along this trail are spectacular and photo-worthy. You start at Shipwreck Beach and hike all the way to the Makauwahi Cave and back. A must if you are in Poipu.

Beautiful Views

By Jeff H |

A nice hike with some awesome views. Not very difficult, saw multiple families with adolescent children. Don't get confused by the many path options. Eventually they all end up in the same place.

It’s a hike, not a trail

By Laura D |

This is a hike; wear appropriate shoes, such as tennis shoes or hikers. Bring water, and go during a time when it’s not the hottest. The views are amazing, even when you wander accidentally off the trail. The trail is not well marked, so be ready to go with the flow and do some backtracking.

Wow!

By Texans112 |

This was one of the best hikes to a beach we did on the entire island of Kauai! One of the locals recommended it to us. Take the dirt road passed the Grand Hyatt. It is pretty rough but we were able to navigate in a normal car. When you get to the end of the road. Walk along the edges all the way to the right. Incredible ocean views with cool dry holes and stunning Jurassic like views inland. Allow yourself an hour or two to really explore. There were 2 monk seals on the beach. The cave preserve had already closed but we were able to walk around to see a view from up above. Be sure to look in the gated fields for huge tortoises!

Beautiful views

By Krista Y |

Nice trail with several different paths to take. We took a detour to the cave and it’s worth the quick trip. The paths closest to the shoreline have beautiful views.

Great until golf course ( IMHO)

By john b |

Great hike, sandy and many off trails that let you gaze at the ocean and cliffs. We wanted to go to the end but as you approach the golf course you will see signs of "sacred place". Next time I would stop here ( BIG stone wall to your left). From here on you walk over little rocks, then through a gold course to a path that seems to go don to the beach.
Wonderful walk

Beautiful hike, highly recommend

By joebobeo |

We had the fun of doing this hike a few days ago, and part of it was in the rain! Plan for 2 hours, spectacular views, an amazing cave, and even tortoises at the end. Very nice hike, definitely hiking or running shoes recommended.

Nice coastal walk but hot

By CindyLCan |

This trail you can access right near the Grand Hyatt so it’s really convenient if you’re staying at the hotel and you feel like a hike by the coast. There is no cover so you are exposed to the sun and heat. I’m not sure I would do it with young kids though, I think they may get bored after a certain point. It’s really beautiful though with the cliffs, water, etc. We also saw a few people horseback riding near one of the beaches we walked to so that was nice to see. We were so hot by the time we reached the beach that it was nice to cool off in the water before we headed back. We probably walked a total of 4 miles and it took us a few hours since we stopped a bunch of times to look at the scenery.

Extremely Breathtaking

By heatseekerVancouver |

This is a must do hike which is fairly easy and loaded with lots of views and sites.you go along the coast from Shipwreck Beach and can go along the golf course to a featured cave, tortoise sanctuary, and beaches that are beautiful.

Beautiful views

By Nita M |

Path is fairly obvious, which is good because it's not really marked. You'll walk through sand, bushes, rocks and part of a golf course. We forgot to take our map and couldn't tell where the trail ended. We stopped above the riding stables next to cliffs overlooking a Bay Area. That was almost 2 miles. Later found out that we were supposed to finish at the other side of the bay (beach). Still was a great trail walk. Be sure to take water! You'll need it!

Beautiful vistas and easy hike!

By David E |

For those who are not advanced hikers, this is a great trail with beautiful views around every corner! Wear tennis shoes for most comfort. Not too muddy like some hikes in Kauai can get. It goes along the coast line and is just gorgeous! You can turn back anytime you feel like it and enjoy a whole other perspective on the way back. Beautiful!

End to end - delightful

By Safariholic |

Take care though. There are/were some spots where a fall could be really rather serious and one would not wamnt to worsen the surfaces by enhancing erosion.

Camera and Binns - mandatory

Great hike with amazing views

By Compass63092629211 |

Do not miss the cave, go all the way to the rear cave and talk to the docent. Go find the tortoise sanctuary past the cave as well. Great hike with kids. Just be mindful of golf balls when you’re on the trail next to the fairway.

My Favourite Running Trail

By Steve A |

Every year, I wonder if I will still be able to run this trail. At almost 74, I'm not as fast or as nimble but I still managed to run it a couple of times on this trip. Yesterday I ran to the head of the beach at Mahaulepu, which was 8 miles return from Kiahuna.
It is a spectacular trail and a challenging but fun run. At times you are scrambling up a sandy slope; other times you are leaping over roots and lava rock but when you are done, it really makes you feel as though you have accomplished something.
The vistas from the trail of the sky, the sea and the mountains, are extraordinary.
A week ago I ran it in the pouring rain, which was a different experience but still great fun!
Of course you can do it as a hike, and you can also go all along the Mahaulepu beach and beyond. Be sure to take water and go early in the morning if you can.
It is not only my favourite running trail, but it's my very favourite thing to do in Poipu.

Very nice walk with ocean views and caves

By Paul M |

We enjoyed this trail, starting from Shipwreck's Beach and going all the way out to the Makauwaki Caves. We did it early in the morning (a little before 9 AM), and had the trail mostly to ourselves. When we were heading back around 11 there were a lot of other people on the trail by then.

Absolutely beautiful hike and views

By mrss876 |

Did this yesterday with my family and kids 7 and 4. Wear hiking shoes and bring your camera. Can get pretty windy but can hike in the trees rather than along the bluff. We hiked to the secret beach I’m sure you can go farther by the golf course. Park at shipwreck beach. Definitely recommend!!

Bring your Camera!

By Tnole |

This is a wonderful trail that spans across the southwest side of Kauai from Shipwreck east - it's an easy flat hike that provides some of the most spectacular views of the island. Bring a lunch and water and enjoy a nice lil picnic after your walk.

Just ok

By Alicia Lynn |

Eh, good hiking spot if you can’t venture out too far or have children or dogs with you. It was a nice way to kill some time but wish it were a little more challenging or had better views. Not that the views were terrible (it’s Kauai for goodness sake!) but we hiked much better trails during our stay.

First Hawaians! Real tangible history

By aNnIe O |

you don't need to book a tour do this. you can drive to the end of Poipu road and follow the dirt road follow signs to visit the burial cave. There are donation boxes in the parking area. Other wise you can park at the Hyatt or the public beach next to the Hyatt climb the rock from the beach and walk the trail. The concierge at the Hyatt has a brochure on this trail.

Turtles riding the waves!

By Shaun M |

I chose to check out this hike over a dip in the pool, in the hope I would see green sea turtles. I was in luck! The path is paved for a while and then turns to gravel but it is not onerous or difficult. I walked to a point where many people were standing and was rewarded by several green turtles riding the waves, popping their heads out of the water from time to time. After watching a while, I walked on. Very pleasant trail and lovely view. I am looking forward to hiking the entire trail next time I am here.

A moderate hike yields great views and tortoises

By travelisgreatmn |

It looked like a nice hike until we got to the tortoise area and then it was a great hike. The cave is easy enough to get into if your knees work and/or if you are short. The cave has great colors. A naturalist is there at least on Sunday from 10- 2 who will answer questions. But the tortoises - how fun is it to be that close to them? I believe they are trying to introduce the tortoises here to eradicate non-native plants. They are replacing extinct ducks and geese which performed that function.

Short or long hike with great views

By Nashville_brent_65 |

We walked from our condo to the western entrance of the trail. Splendid views of the pacific from the cliffs.
Then we hiked through the Grand Hyatt’s gorgeous grounds to Shipwreck Beach.
We hiked through some trees up to the cliffs on the east side of the beach.
Then you can keep going east/north along the cliffs as far as you want.

Great views and small hike

By Seattlebirk |

Amazing. Very small hike up from parking lot. Incredible ledge hike on top. Keep a hold of the young ones. Easy to walk / hike and near a secluded beach

Beautiful Trail

By Donna P |

This trail was so much fun ...not to mention absolutely beautiful especially since your walking by the coast for most of it. It starts near the right side of the beach of the Hyatt in Poipu. There is another trail to the left side of the beach but that is not the Heritage Trail. The trail is fairly easy but there is a bit of climbing here and there..nothing major. The trail leads to caves and a beach. Plan on at least 2-3 hours round trip especially if you want to spend some time at the cave, beach or just exploring.

Be cautious after heavy rains

By MSue |

The day before we hiked this trail, Kauai had island wide rain. We started the next morning just before sunrise at Shipwreck beach to catch the sunrise from the cliffs, then started to make our way through. Absolutely stunning views along the cliffs when you begin. Unfortunately, we barely made it past the golf course as the trail was extremely muddy and we were being eaten alive by tiny mosquitoes that left huge welts. Bring bug spray, and avoid after heavy rain!

Ocean vistas galore

By Paripatetico |

This gets you away somewhat from the carefully manicured and curated Kauai into something more natural. The signage is poor to non-existent but the path is easy enough to find and follow (it’s actually more of a network of trails, except at the eastern end and along the golf course, where it’s a footpath).

The views from this mostly elevated trail are terrific; we watched sea turtles playing and humpback whales breaching along the way, as well as the usual endless - but never boring - sequence of waves breaking. The trail surface varies from packed earth to loose sand to rocks; it is mostly exposed to the midday sun with a few shaded areas along the way. Children from 4-5 years of age could do this but would require supervision due to the risk of falls (there are many unfenced ocean cliffs on this route, although they are easily skirted).
Ocean breezes are fairly reliable to keep things cool; sunscreen is recommended.

next to the coast

By Michelle Z |

It's a nice trail next on the coast, easy one, but part of the trail is sand beach, no way to avoid.

Beautiful hike

By Grace |

A beautiful hike along the coast! The entrance to the trail is not well marked, but not too difficult to find if you just walk along the beach until you see a sort of trail. It has some tricky footing, so be careful, though it isn’t anything that can’t be done! Highly recommend! (Always remember to bring water!)

Guidebook said remote - not so!

By idria50 |

The guidebook we had said that this trail took you into an area that was remote - but i mostly parallels and then ends up at a golf course. However, it was still a pretty hike along the coast with some nice views.

Turlte Viewing Area

By Stephenie S |

This is a review of the Turtle Viewing Area just off of the trail. It exists on the map in TripAdvisor, but you can't choose it to review it.

Surprisingly, I never saw a turtle in this area. Just before sunrise, I did wonder around a bit and found a small path out to a section of rocks with an AMAZING view of the sunrise. I also wondered through different paths.

How to get here – go to Parking for Mahaulepu Heritage Trail (on Google maps). Walk to the right and down the hill. It's a little steep and if it's dark before sunrise, use your phone as a flashlight. When the trail begins to go back uphill, stop and look around to the left. There are a few places that you can walk out there. If you can see the wide section of rocks to the left about 15 feet away, that's where you're going to go. After looking around, come back up the trail toward the parking lot. Watch for a small path in the greenery. You'll walk about 6 feet out to get to the rocks. Sit down and watch the show.

It's also worth walking a little up the Heritage Trail across the manicured grass for more amazing views.

Great hike with fabulous views.

By Connie12 |

We started out from the area right past the Hyatt. I work hiking boots and took a hiking stick but don't have the best ankles or balance. My husband had on hiking boots and wished he had the hiking stick but survived without it. Hike is mostly easy but since I have short legs and not great balance had a hard time in spots. The walk closest to the ocean is gorgeous but there is a much easier one more inland without the great views. There was a mother/daughter with her baby walking the path. The daughter with the baby was further inland to prevent falls or injury. We took 1.5 hours out and did the inland route back which took us an hour. The inland route is not very pretty but is much easier and faster. Of the 7 of us 5 would have said this was easy, my husband and I would give it a more moderate rating for the ocean front hike. The more inland hike was pretty easy for all but I got mosquito bites on that one.

Must Do!

By JFWhite |

Today we did this hike. Parked at the ShipWreck Beach amd walked this trail all the way to the caves. This trail is a must do if you are spending some time on this island. It is free and offers plenty a beautiful views. I wouls strongly recommend this as a must do for anyone!

Outstanding adventure walk

By Jake_MA_11 |

Such a beautiful walk along the Ocean and tropical woods. in some places, you need to watch your footing but it was such an enjoyable journey. I did not see too many people and enjoyed the solitude in such a beautiful area. This should be on your short list when visiting Kawai

Very easy trail with great views

By chitown5Chicago |

Some of the reviews will say this trail is easy to moderate. If you have done any hiking at all, you would not call this moderate. The hardest part would be maneuvering around a few boulders or rocks.

The views are spectacular. The golf course (Poipu Bay) is very nice (and hard if you play when there are tradewinds). all in all, it was a nice hike, but it was not as challenging as Waimea Canyon and the views are equally spectacular.

Must do easy trail on South Shore

By PhfamWA |

Go early since it gets hot. Easy hike. Take water. breathtaking views. the cave was open when we went and we got a tour which was very interesting. Very accessible. We parked at Shipwreck Beach.

Keep Calm and Trail On

By GalavantingJeff |

Parked at Punahoa Point (dirt road) and hiked west along Maha'ulepu Heritage Trail towards Shipwreck's Beach, Keonela Bay. Last stretch of accessible coastline on the south shore that has not been developed. Great coastal hike that takes you along sand-dune cliffs, Kiawe trees, limestone formations and rocky inlets. About 2 miles one way. Saw some whales breaching and blowholes, very cool. On the way back we carried on to Gillian's Beach and checked out Makauwahi Cave (free tours Wed thru Sun 10am - 2pm). Check out Lida's Field Of Dreams (farm) and saw giant tortoises. Took us 4 hours, can be done in less time. Whales watching and beachcombing was the highlight on top of the trail, cave, beaches and giant tortoises. Must do.

Predictably Sunny +/- Dry

By Taylo102 |

Winter or Summer this is your sunshine walk or hiking trail. If tired of rain/fog/mist in the high country give your day a break. Google Shipwreck Bay, park in the beach lot, determine your time to spend, put on your sunscreen, water in your sack if spending more than two hours and probably snack or lunch as well. Multiple trails at the start keeping reducing to fewer and a single poorly defined if you go as far as possible - 2-3 hours one way or turn around wherever you choose. The avid photographer may need 5 hours for the whole trail. Footwear seen varied from flip-flops to boots and rarely a bare foot as well. The only sure mostly sunny hike anytime of year on the island. A must do to at least some degree even if you “cheat” and 4X4 your way towards the end.

18 things you must know about the Maha'ulepu Heritage Trail

By robert c |

One of the most picturesque hiking trails on Kauai, with views of ocean, cliffs, limestone caves, sinkholes, horse stables, and expansive beaches.

We drive along Poipu road, passing the Grand Hyatt Resort and Spa, making a right turn just before the big concrete sign of the Poipu Bay Golf course.

Best to start early in the day before the temperatures heat up. Even on December 12, 2019 , temperatures hit 81 degrees by 11am, peaking at 83 degrees by 3pm. Carry water and wear a hat to protect from the tropical sun.

Parked in the free Shipwreck beach parking lot, which can fill in a hurry. Later arrivals parked alongside the road in the mud leading to the parking lot.

Use the bathroom facilities, as no bathrooms nor water alongside the trail. However, once we came here before 8am, and the bathrooms were closed.

We dressed in running shoes, as the first half mile is sand, and you don't want those causing blisters in your sandals or flip flops.

Walked along the edge of Shipwreck beach, and then up a rocky hillside, climbing upwards boulder to boulder. Over the top of the hill of limestone, and an awesome sight of waves crashing against the stone cliffs below, on this southeastern coastal corner of Kauai.

Trail goes alongside the ocean, in and out of forests of Kiwae, with fantastic limestone rock formations in view right at the ocean' edge. Arches of rock, and pinnacles rising right out of the sea.

Not advisable to hike on the sandy areas right on the cliffsides, as they might crumble.

Sandy dunes replace the rock path, and then red clay. Inlets everywhere along the jagged coast line, where during calmer times you can see sea turtles or Hawaiian monk seals resting on the sands of the inlets.

In the background the red-brown Makawehi Bluffs. We pass a pond and then the golf course itself. One time saw a dude on a mountain bike, just waiting to be cited by a ranger. Hikers are warned by signs to stay on the very edge of the golf course. Safety fences separate you from the very edge of the cliffs.

At the end of the golf course is an area of tall grasses, where you can see where you've hiked.

Go over the hill, and come down, passing CJM country horse stables.

Pass by the Makauwahi sinkhole and cave, now open 10am-4pm daily for tours.

Reach Mahaulepu or Gillin's beach about 75 minutes after starting. Rugged and remote area, but there is Gillin's beach house right on the beach.

On our way back, one can cut through the forests away from the limestone hill formation, but don't get lost, like we did and reach a dead end before doubling back.

Three hours after starting, we return to the now full parking lot and open restrooms. Long line of women at the women's restroom, and no line at the men's restroom.

I was stopped by two women, as their lady companion had to go so badly, she's using the guy's bathroom. At least they didn't have multiple unisex bathrooms like they do in Yosemite NP, as I would have had to wait my turn in line with all the ladies ahead of me!

Terrific Trail

By Naplestravelers |

We loved hiking by the ocean, golf course, and through the jungle. We mountain views were breathtaking. We ended up at the horse farm which was fun.

Must See Ocean Scape

By weifang2019 |

I am a nature lover, so I always seek out opportunity to be in nature.
The trail is about 3.7 miles long. We started from Shipwreck beach at dusk. We climbed the cliff and went on the sandy trail for about a mile but had to come back because my 10-year-old son was getting tired.
The climb is moderate with no sharp drops. If you want to see the ocean scape which is breathtaking you would have a pass sections of narrow path around the rock with slope leading to the ocean beneath, but it was not difficult.
We took some dramatic ocean view from on top and close to the edge even though I was afraid of the heights.
The trail seems to be a popular spot for the local because we saw them climb down the cliff and took wedding pictures with the dramatic ocean scape on the background.

Next time if I get a chance definitely want to finish the trail.
Before I left Grand Hyatt, I recommended to a family about the trail when they first arrived. They immediately gathered to go. Hope they have finished the trail.
In my opinion it is a must see and a highlight of my trip.

Interesting climb

By McFerrid |

You can do this hike in your swimsuit, but wear good sandals or hiking boots. Hard to make progress in sandy spots but you will enjoy great ocean views from high spots. It is about 3 miles long but when the path narrowed we chose to turn around. No reason to fall or get injured on a vacation! Watch your footing for rocks and tree roots and bring your camera!

Family Vacation

By Josh |

This is a must do if you have time while in Kauai! It is absolutely a beautiful hike-it is 4 miles round trip but it is not real hard-some areas are a little harder but nothing to worry about. My wife and I hiked it along with our 3 kids ages 14, 11, 8 and they had no problems! It took us a little over 3 hours for the round trip but we swam awhile and stopped to eat snacks. My suggestion would be to go early to hike it because it did get hot by the time we were done. Also make sure to bring plenty of water and some snacks and I would wear your swimsuit. At the end of the trail is a beach to cool off in-not good for swimming but for wadding into-there is also a cave to explore. The trail does get close to the edge at times but you can choose to hike up a little higher if you are nervous-plenty of great places to stop and get some amazing photos!!

Fantastic hike!

By Susan R |

This is an easy , fun hike with beautiful views of the ocean. You literally walk on cliff tops above the beach in places and the views are gorgeous! Bring comfortable shoes and water. There are no restroom facilities on this trail. It is an easy walk, but not accessible to wheelchairs or strollers. Take it to the end ( about 2+miles) and you can see whales ( we did) and a seal just lounging on the sand. Someone built a zen maze at the end. Pretty cool. The cutoff for the cave is off this trail. You can see the cave and if it is open you can go inside. There are brochures you can use for self guided tour, if you like.

Beautiful Beach Trail from Shipwreck Beach to Maha'ulepu Beach

By Ailton007 |

This trail takes you from Shipwreck Beach to Maha'ulepu Beach. We parked at Shipwreck Beach and started the trail from there. There's also another option to drive past the Grand Hyatt along a 1.5 mile dirt road which takes you closer but you miss out on a lot of views. Choose this option only if you want to hike all the way to Ha'ula Beach! Back to this one: We walked along the cliffs right past Shipwreck Beach and along the golf course all the way to Maha'ulepu which is secluded, offers great snorkeling and features the Gillin Beach House which was built in 1946 and is the only house on the entire coast. The hike offers amazing views and is fairly easy so good for people of all ages. You can spend hours at Maha'ulepu but only the trail is 2 hours round-trip. I highly recommend taking the detour to the Makauwahi sinkhole, a great open air atrium with palm trees and a tiny entrance to get in!

hot in the sun but oh so pretty

By Dave D |

Trail is mostly flat and easy to follow. Take water, we forgot and regretted it. Trail starts out in the trees but ends up in the open a few places.

Breathtaking Hike

By mbaack |

My husband and I have hiked in many locations across the world and this is one of the best we've done! We were able to see sea turtles along the shoreline and the trail led to a cave and a secluded beach area. The trail is classified as 'easy', but I found a walking stick to be helpful along the way to maneuver across some of the rocky and sandy terrain. Make sure to wear tennis shoes or hiking shoes rather than flipflops! It is best to go early so it is cooler. We even tried the hike 2 days in a row and it seemed like a different hike each day due to the weather conditions being sunny one day and cloudy the next. Also, there are so many different trails along the coast line that all lead to the same place, but they each have different vegetations and views.

Our favorite beach

By A_RAdventures |

We love this secluded beach! You can walk here from Shipwreck’s Beach which is a ways but worth the trip. You can also drive to a couple different spots then walk but the road can be rough & rutty and hard on a rental car. The beach & views are gorgeous. There is shade available depending on where you set up. Waves can be rough so not the best place for swimming but we do see people surfing at times. We were fortunate enough to see a monk seal and pup on our recent visit which was a real treat.

Shipwreck to Caves

By Venture637373 |

Beautiful views of the cliff side/ocean. Multiple trails side by side so you can be closer or further from the edge. Part of the trail walks through the golf course which is minimally awkward. Starts or ends at Shipwreck beach depending on where you come from. End parking is towards a ranch with caves near by.

Most Gorgeous Hike!

By Beth K |

Gorgeous! Stunning views! Not to be missed! My son and husband got mad because I stopped to many times to take pictures. We hiked from Shipwreck Beach all the way to Gillian's Beach. Need good shoes or at least Teva or Chaco's! Lots to see!

Good Hike for Most Folks

By Leon G |

Shipwreck Beach to Punahoa Point is a 6.0 kilometer lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Koloa, Kauai, Hawaii that offers the chance to see wildlife and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, trail running, and surfing and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. The trail head is at Shipwreck Beach just east of the Grand Hyatt at a parking lot. There are no trail markers. The footing is sandy with some slippery rocky areas. Stay inland for an easier walk. Will be difficult for children in some places. Bring water and wear a hat.

Great hike

By moncoer |

The vistas from the lihified cliffs are spectacular. Golf course views and tide pools and sandy beaches are all part of a 2 hour hike. Slightly strenuous

Nice Views

By Alka P |

Nice views, not too challenging. Good activity to do with the family. Easy to drive to from the north coast, which is where we stayed. North coast was rainy but the south coast was beautiful and sunny. in retrospect we should have stayed in the south part during our December vacation.

Crazy beautiful hike along the coast

By Xaby1 |

Start at Shipwreck Beach and walk left from the parking lot to the start of the trail. The trail (or trails since there are multiple spurs) goes down the coast line and provides stunning vistas of the ocean and cliffs. Hiking along the trails you also see cool lithified sand concretions. We only hiked to the golf course before turning around (had a shelter dog and 6 year old in tow).

After every new inlet it keeps getting better

By Jlandau99 |

Great place for pics. Little tough to find but worth it. Give yourselt a good hour + for this walk. On an island known for great hikes this is def up there.

Free and Amazing Views

Just a great and pretty easy hike. Amazing views and friendly people (other hikers) along the way. Well worth the time…and absolutely free! Highly recommended.

LOVE THIS PLACE!

I hike this trail every time I am in Kauai, usually several times at sunrise and sunset. If you are a photographer, there are endless possibilities for striking images. Parking is limited, as the beach area is used by surfers, so you may have to park above the paved parking lot. Once you get to the beach, turn sharp left to gain the trail. You will encounter sand, tree roots, and lava rocks throughout the trail, so I suggest not wearing flip-flops. The views are spectacular. As a pro photographer I find new opportunities every time I visit.

A beautiful walk off the beaten path

By Vickirevi |

What can I say? The whole area is gorgeous and there are less people around. Saw a monk seal and her new born pup. That stole the show.

Beautiful hike

We did this hike early in the morning with little crowds and the sun rising up. It is an easy hike but would still recommend runners or something besides flip flops. Lots of different side paths so you can choose your path a bit. Lots of spots to stop and take photos. We parked at shipwreck beach and started there. Definitely a must to do.

Absolutely gorgeous and serene

Went out for the hike with our two boys, we all enjoyed the views and the hike. It was short and sweet, make it long or short if you want. Parking was easy at shipwreck beach for the start.

Spectacular views

Hiked with friends. Beautiful scenery.
Ocean very turquoise, many rock formations as well as area of tortoises sanctuary. Very very worth the hike.

Highlight of our trip

By aack22 |

Ok, so our trip was relatively short at only 2.5 days, but we packed in a lot and this was by far our favorite activity. I can't wait to bring my kids back to experience it. I would consider it a mild to moderate hike depending on which path you take. There are plenty to choose from, and you can turn around whenever you feel done. We chose to follow the path along the cliff edges/beaches on the way out and the views were gorgeous. We spotted 6 turtles playing in the waves (be patient as you look out at the crashing waves as they peek their heads out and then their shells appear and sometimes you can see their shapes underwater as the ride a cresting wave if the light is right). We climbed down to a few of the safer beaches and found plenty of tide pools filled with little creatures. Crabs and fish of all types. Even pretty fish with stripes. It was almost like snorkeling without having to get wet. There are gorgeous cliff views and beach views and even lava rock along the way to see. Then there are the sacred grounds near the end which are very quiet compared to the rest of the hike. Very beautiful. We took a more inland path back and discovered it went up and down through deep sand a lot more than the path on the way out. Maybe we were just hot and tired, but it sure felt like the harder route. Really enjoyed this hike and I think most people including kids could do well with this (unless you have a child that will take off running as there are plenty of cliff edges that you do not want to be right on the edge of). I hiked it in my Teva sandals, so it wasn't too bad.

If you like to hike, this is a must do!

Trailhead is near parking at Shipwreck Beach. we hiked 4 miles round trip to the Makauwaki Cave. Much of the hike is on lava rock cliffs overlooking the ocean. Part of the hike is on the edge of a golf course. It took us 2 plus hours to do the hike but we stopped for several minutes at the cave and listened to it's story from a guide stationed there. It is a moderate hike due to the footing on the rock. We saw hikers from 8 to 80! Simply gorgeous and 2 hours of exercise!

Great trail

Easy to moderate trail with great views, worth doing for sure..get there early for parking near trail entryway. Hiking poles not necessary unless wet

Beautiful, but confusing

By applecat79 |

This is a lovely trail along the south side of Kauai and I highly recommend it if you are staying near Poipu. I'm not sure it is worth driving to if you are staying on the opposite side of the island as there are so many great hiking trails. The trail has no signs and splits off several times. The great thing is you will always end up going in the right direction but it's just confusing. And part of the trail literally goes through a golf course. The course is beautiful but it kind of takes you out of the nature mindset.

Great hike!!!

By ChicagoMom847 |

We love this 4 mike round trip hike along Kauai’s southern coast just east of the Grand Hyatt Kauai Hotel. We did this early one morning. It was a breeze and the views of the ocean and the Poipu Golf course were gorgeous! We’ll definitely do it again.

Easy short trail with great view!

By Yoko S |

It's a short and easy trail but you can enjoy great view of pacific ocean and cliff. You can bring your lunch and have a picnic overlooking beautiful ocean. I saw many turtles and fish from top of trail. If you go Maha'ulepu beach, you should try this trail!

Great hike for the morning

I loved getting up early in the morning and just taking our time enjoying the sunrise a beautiful, peaceful place.

Heritage Trail Maha'ulepu

By Connie T |

Trail was an easy walk, vistas and ocean views were breathtaking; trail wasn't overpopulated at the time we went end of October/first days of November

A great hike with a big reward at the end

By Steve W |

A bit technical and at 4 miles a bit long. We stopped at the Maha'ulepa Beach after seeing the sink hole and Makawauki Cave but were so happy we did this hike. We actaully went back to Maha'ulepa Beach a 2nd time because if was so beautiful (and mostly deserted) and managed to walk another 1/2 mile of the trail along the beach. A great way to spend a day in Kauai.

Great family hike

By Jessica S |

We loved this hike! We stopped a lot on the way out to take in the scenery and then walked quicker on the way back with less stops. I’d recommend following the trail closer to the water in one direction. My son said it was more fun and the views are amazing. We were tired after but didn’t have trouble and we’re not hikers. Take water. We had some granola bars and apples too for our teens. Towards the end it goes through a protected reserve and is lined up with a golf course.

This Is The One Above All Others

By outdoortrippers |

This is the hike that is a must-do for anybody and eveybody. Excellent coastal views the entire trip with minimal effort. It is a 2 mile out-and-back trail from Shipwreck Beach to the caves but going just half the direction gives you a superb view of the full trail. The caves just add a little more adventure to it. You can take the trail on the sunny side closer to the jagged coastline cliffs or go inner through the shade (consider on route back). Take advantage of this coastal trail you can't find in every seaside town in U.S.

Utterly breathtaking

By The Thompsons say Hi! |

We have done a bunch of hikes on the islands and this one probably has the most magnificent views. This was unexpected since it’s a coastal trail and doesn’t have major elevation change. But my goodness the views were astonishing. Huge rock formations, stunning cliffs and those amazing Hawaiian waters. This is a relatively easy hike but it is hot so bring water and lather up in advance. This will now be top of my list of “must do on Kauai!”

Must Do-Easy Access

By Sue S |

This was a moderately easy hike; You can make it as short or long as you like. We didnt go very far, but had fun exploring the caves and cliffs at the top of the trail. This entertained me and my teemage daughter for an hour and a half. on what had started out as a heavily overcast and drizzling day. If its rainy, expect to get muddy-bright orange mud! Next time we will go further down the trail.

Gorgeous!

We loved this very easy but stunning trails. Many beautiful views, clear path and plenty of pics opportunities

Great Hike!!!

By busconi |

Nice moderate hike along ocean cliffs from Shipwreck Beach to Mahaulepu Beach...pretty amazing hike. A little over two miles and the entire way are jaw dropping, beautiful views. We left early, about 8:00, before it got too hot. The hike back around 2:00 was a bit warm....be sure to bring water. You do have a small section where you hike along the side of a golf course, but most of the time you are right along side the cliffs. You will find there are many trails you can take...we chose to stay along the cliffs for the views and the cool breezes (sometimes really strong breezes!!!. If you don't get to the Shipwreck Beach Parking area early, it might be hard to find a parking spot...gets very busy. Highly recommend this hike!!!

About 2 miles, visit the caves!

By Brad |

This is about a 2 mile hike, each way. You are along the gorgeous coast and end at beach. There’s a fun cave/sinkhole off to the left you can visit. There are signs. It is worth the quick stop.

Beautiful, relatively easy trail

By JMC |

Beautiful, relatively easy trail. Bring water and snacks. Gorgeous views and a chance to jump in the beach at the end. Completely worth it. Takes about 2 1/2 hours total at a slow pace. People do it in flip-flops, but best to wear sneakers at least. No need for hiking boots.

AWESOME!!

By pratts81 |

Awesome, amazing & beautiful views from this 4+ mile round trip hike. There is easy parking on the street just in front of the entrance to Shipwreck's Beach. As you walk towards the beach turn to the left and you will see a small path. You should be able to see people up on the first cliff. The view from here is amazing but don't stop, keep walking and walking and walking. It is a very easy hike but wear the right shoes for walking/hiking. You will go through the golf coarse but once you get through it keep going as there is a lot more to see. Once the trail ends you can keep going. We went past the CJM stables all the way to Makauwahi Cave. It rained on us but that only added to the fun. We stopped under a tree or 2 until it let up some. Don't for get to bring water or gatorade to stay hydrated. It really was worth it and i would recommend it.

Very Easy Hike, But Crazy Hot!

By 1_Metallica_1 |

My wife and I did this hike and while it was fairly easy (about 2.3 miles each way) there is very minimal shade. BRING WATER! It is very cool at the end to see a seal on the beach. There are probably 50 different ways you could go, don't worry, they all take you to the same place.

Gorgeous trail.

Really enjoyed walking along the shore line. Seeing the cave at the end and even checked out the tortuous in the farm.

Beautiful!

By Travelfor2GA |

Beautiful hike! We parked adjacent to Shipwreck Beach. I think “hike” is too strenuous of a word to use, but a bit more than a walk. You definitely want to wear sneakers. Beautiful views of the ocean & great vistas. Kids age 11 & 14, one with some motor challenges, handled this with no issues. Do bring water! One of the more enjoyable walks we did this trip. we drove to the cave/tortoise preserve from here.

Sunrise!

By account4fun |

We were staying at the grand hyatt next door so would take this walk in the mornings to watch the sunrise. Beautiful spot and definitely worth getting up early for!

Wonderful hike with spectacular views

By dzoucha |

A great couple of hours hiking. At the end is the Makauwahi Cave Reserve. It is a nice reward after this nearly 2 mile hike. There are many side trails to explore, with beautiful foliage, birds, and stunning shoreline views. The trail is rated at moderate, but it is much easier than that, just a bit long when you stop to enjoy everything.

Great Views

By Danimal |

Easy hiking trail. If you’re squeamish about heights you’ll want to walk along the upper trail, but the lower trail provides very cool views of the coastal rocks and surf. Only thing missing is trail markers.

Gorgeous Views

By Heather |

I only followed this trail from Shipwreck Beach up to the caves, but it was one of the most beautiful hikes I've ever done. Fairly easy hike. Be sure to stay on trail where the signs say to protect local plants and wildlife!

A must!

Breathtaking! Such a cool trail, amazing views and a gorgeous beach. We even spotted a seal while here 🙂

Beautiful hike for the whole family!

By ConsultantSF |

Super fun and beautiful. We did this hike with 9, 11 and 13 year-olds. They did great. It can get hot so wear hats and bring water. As others have said, it's not really a marked trail so just follow the beaten path from Shipwreck beach.
