disaster

The place is deserted. The access road is blocked. There is no alternative transportation. Instead of a planned two- to three-hour visit, we spent no less than 7 hours on a grueling and difficult walking route. The toilets are closed, there are no water fountains. There is no representative of the authority. Highly recommend a visit there and continue to Yosemite Park.

LOVELY!

By Jean B |

Of course I visited Sequoia National Park before Yosemite so I had already experienced the joy of being in the middle of sequoia groves. But then, you can never get enough, so a visit to the Mariposa Grove was also outstanding!

Major COVID changes

By Lea F |

There used to be a parking lot just outside of the biggest trees at the grove BUT the park has closed that lot and is making everyone use the lower lot by the visitor center. What you don't know until you get there is that you now have to hike 2 miles, up hill, on dirt to get to the grove. We had a toddler in a stroller with us and only made it about 3/4 mile before we had to call it quits.

TREE-mendous

By DawgExplorer |

This is a great hike for everyone including small kids. It is a smooth surfaced trail that is a loop or you can go to the Grizzly Giant and turn around. You park a few miles away from the trailhead and take a shuttle bus up the mountain. There are several large sequoias in the grove, but I prefer the ones at Sequoia National Park. However if you are not going there then this is a good substitute.

Amazing area but recently had storms and fire go through

By Vicki69072 |

In June of 2021 we had to first hike the 2 miles to the start of the grove (shuttle busses are not running due to Covid). Then the handicap accessible trail was not open due to a storm that came through in January that pushed over many trees, including some of the giant sequoias. Between seeing the fire burned trees and the giant ones that were fallen from the storm it was a bit sad, but still amazing. Most of the "famous" trees are still standing. After walking 2 miles just to get here, we didn't have enough energy to walk the 4 mile path (knowing we had a 2 mile hike back down at the end). We walked as far as the tunnel tree and headed back in. Amazing work of God!

Nice Site, Limited Access in Winter

By Eric F |

I have been to the grove in summer before and thought it had impressive trees, but not much else, warranting a four-star rating. However, I am not here to review the sequoia forest. I am here to warn about coming here before May and after October. If you do this, you will have a very good chance of the trail being closed for snow. Also, the area is crowded year-round, so keep that in mind. It is still a nice walk, but access is limited in winter.

Our favorite place in all of Yosemite!

By Lauren Rutledge |

We had no idea that this grove was so close to our hotel and we could not wait to check it out. Worth every single second! The trails were nicely groomed and seeing these giant sequoias were something that I have been wanting to do since I was a little kid.

See our pictures below! We had the best time and will most definitely be back!

a place of the giants...trees

By Joe Alejo |

if you are ever in Yosemite national park one just has to go and visit this magnificent place of the giants...trees that is...its a great spot to go and see some of the largest living trees in the world within proximity of each other...very nice hike too...does get a bit busy but if one gets there early enough its not too bad

World Class Attraction

By GPBurdell67 |

I would guess that 80% of the people we witnessed during our visit in August were from outside the USA. And there were thousands of them. But the trees are worth it. So fight the crowds but enjoy these colossal trees.

Nice

By bli1220 |

Our trip of Yosemite started at South entrance which is where Grove is located. This was beautiful place to hike. Day we went there was light snow on the ground and sun was peaking thru. The trees were beautiful! The shuttle into the Grove is very efficient and stays on schedule. This is must see spot in the park. We visited in off season and during week so had no problems. If going on weekend or summer come early or you might not have place to park.

Easy trail, Wheelchair accessible, Senior passed

By Cr1717 |

You need to park just past the entrance to Yosemite, and take the shuttle bus to the Grove. For $80, seniors who are 62 years old or older can purchase a national parks pass which is good for the rest of their lives. There is a wheelchair accessible trail, and also slightly more difficult trail to the beautiful trees. We saw a few deer. It’s worth it to make a stop here, as there is nothing like the huge sequoia trees.

Beautiful Place to see Amazing Trees

By Flydog66 |

One of my favorite spots in Yosemite. The giant trees are just breathtaking and there is a very nice boardwalk trail that should be accessible to most. You have to take a shuttle bus from the parking area to the grove (or walk) but it comes quite often. The gift ship run by the Conservancy is the best on the park.

Awe inspiring

By SamsHuman |

The trail renovations they have done are great. There are several path lengths to choose from and all loop back to the drop off point. The free shuttle bus takes you up to the grove entrance from the parking lot in about 7 minutes and comes every 10 minutes and is comfortable and easy to ride on. The sequoia trees are just amazing. The beauty and majesty of these trees is just beyond words. So glad we got to see them.

Directions on best route to the less traveled upper grove - a full day

By Jon_94117 |

It's been years since we visited Yosemite. The valley with the crowds and traffic during "the season" no longer beckons us from San Francisco - we have memories of quieter times and fewer backpackers on the back-country trails. We'll go back during off-season, some time.

So we went to check out the revamped Mariposa Grove -- with the new emphasis on hiking rather than on the old Disneyland-like tram to ride through the giant sequoias.
We stayed for 2 nights at a nearby lodge/hotel and arrived at the Yosemite south gate and shuttle parking lot to the grove at 8:15am on a Friday before most schools let out for summer (June 7). There were only a few cars in the parking lot; a 15 minute wait for the shuttle. The guide office wasn't open and trail maps not available, so we took photos of the trail map posted on the wall.

The details from here on are for people looking for suggestions of how to spend an easy day in the grove. We're in our 60s, do a lot of walking, and did not find what we did as "strenuous," even though that's what the NPS trail markers calls our route. We just kept hiking because it seemed relatively easy, felt good, and we had energy and the desire to do more. And brought lunch and water. Total time was about 6 hours and about 7 miles. We spent a lot of time dawdling -- taking in what we were looking at... and taking pictures.

**Note: whenever possible, take one of the perimeter trails or similar less-traveled trails. If you're seeking peace and solitude in the giant sequoias, this is probably more what you're looking for. They are well-maintained. We didn't see any evidence that the trails have been used with horses, despite the signs marking this as a horse trail. There were very few people on the perimeter trails when we were there on a weekday with school still in session.

We started the regular Big Trees Loop trail (easy, about 2 miles total), then kept going on the Mariposa Grove Trail at the Grizzly Giant. But the MGT is basically an old tram road with the asphalt stripped off -- and not very interesting. So, on the MGT, across from the branch off to the California Tunnel Tree, we headed onto a smaller trail to the "Perimeter Trail" and kept going to the Mariposa Grove Cabin.
The perimeter trail was well maintained and more what we were looking for: a sweet hike through the woods on a narrow hiking trail. Not really "strenuous" in our book... just a moderate grade climb uphill.

The Mariposa Grove was inspiring... and the cabin story fascinating. We got great suggestions from the Conservancy volunteer there about trails.

From the cabin, we took a portion of the Guardian's Loop trail to the Telescope Tree and the Fallen Wawona Tunnel Tree, shifting whenever possible to cutoff trails or the Perimeter Trail. Then, from the Galen Clark Tree, took the Mariposa Grove Trail (old tram road) the 1/2 mile to Wawona Point. The view from Wawona Point is worth the walk -- and it's a great place to have a lunch or snack that you brought.

Heading back, we avoided the road-wide Mariposa Grove Trail for the lesser-traveled trails. At the Faithful Couple tree, we took the smaller trail until it joined up with the Grizzly Giant Loop Trail, then back to the start and shuttle stop.

We got back to the shuttle parking lot at 2:30 and saw quite a few open parking spaces. Then headed back to the lodge/hotel and a beeline to the hot tub and pool.

So why give this a 4 star instead of 5? I love this place, but giving it a rating involves comparing. And to me there's nothing that beats the intimacy, beauty, and peace of Muir Woods and the redwood grove in the early morning hours before 8:00am and the crowds begin to arrive. Maybe it's the number of groves/trees in that tiny amount of valley space, or the moisture from the fog, or the way the redwoods climb to the sky (redwoods are taller, sequoias are thicker). This close-up intimacy of Muir Woods is a very different experience than the much wider area and grandeur-of-a-different-sort of Mariposa Grove, where you happen upon groves of giant sequoias in the dry elevations of the Sierras.

It's all good.

Awed

By Chuck C |

Totally awed at the size and age of the redwoods.

Words are difficult for me to find to describe the feelings that I experienced while exploring the Grove.

Monster traffic jams

By eloprtbdn |

I wanted to put this comment, not to complain but to warn visitors. Watch out for busy periods (especially summer). We have just returned from our stay in the United States and I must say that we were disappointed by the organization in Yosemite. It is necessary to allow 1 to 2 hours of traffic jam before you can access the site (well parking in our case). We waited from 8:30 to 10:30 to enter. So plan on going before 8:00. We wanted to see Mariposa's redwoods. Know that it is necessary, after this wait, to take a shuttle (that is a good thing) to access Mariposa. The site was burned and lost its charm. It's really sad to see this charred landscape. Still, some subjects still hold up and are beautiful. It is still important to maintain your visit as it is necessary to support the park against this scourge and allow post-fire maintenance.
After Mariposa, to see other points of interest, it was necessary to plan again 1h30 drive, not counting traffic jams and without guarantee of parking space. So we gave up.
So plan to stay somewhere else after your visit so you don't have to drive back to your Inn for another 1.5 hours.
Attention also: you must have previously booked your entrance to the park (valid for 3 days). The objective is to anticipate the number of visitors (gauge). Unfortunately, that is not enough. Visitors should be given slots (as is done in other parks in the US) to avoid endless waiting at the entrance.

Very cool

By timbS5649YZ |

Our day was misty and it made it very cool and mysterious, the trees are amazing and the walk was great.

Amazing !

By Phuong N |

We was driving from Half Dome Village and took shuttle bus to Mariposa Grove. We tried moderate trail to Grizzy giant tree. It was great experience, especially learning a bit about giant sequoias.

Watched cone harvesters

By PacificNWFamily |

I enjoyed another hike among the Giant Sequoias with friends. This is one of my favorite areas of Yosemite National Park. In addition to many named and unnamed Giant Sequoias, we saw several bright red snow plants.

This time we were lucky to be visiting when the Ancient Forest Society was collecting cones for the National Park Service. These amazing climbers were at the tops of several trees, harvesting cones for seed collection. I wish I had brought binoculars to watch these folks.

Prefect hike to see the GIANT SEQUOIA TREES

By Marcella H |

We only made it to the Grizzly Giant as we were hiking with a toddler. This hike is mostly paved and easy enough for a toddler to walk and enjoy. You have to take a Free shuttle to the trail head, but the wait is short and pass by every 10 minutes. During the hike we saw deer, the Fallen Monarch, the Bachelor, and squirrels. Very entertaining for the toddler and peaceful for us. Make sure to carry snacks for the little ones. If you go in November make sure you dress in layers as the temperature changes while hiking.

Massive old trees!

By JRG |

Take a walk through history here! some of the oldest trees around! They are large and awe inspiring. Worth the hike.

Amazing Sequoias

By TravelerPhiladelphia |

Even though the road to the start of the trail was closed for the winter, we were able to get there by hiking 2 miles. The trails were completely covered with snow, which made the hike a little tiring, but also made it beautiful and quiet. Once we got past the Tunnel Tree we hiked the long route toward Wawona Point, and ran into one other party the entire time. Unfortunately it started raining pretty hard and the ground got slippery so we turned back, so I can’t comment on the view from the top.

Post Washburn Fire visit

By PacificNWFamily |

We shuttled up early in the morning to avoid the heat of the day. The Mariposa Grove shuttle driver clearly explained where to get off the shuttle and where to get back on. I noticed that the line to get back on the shuttle to head down has been updated with ropes to keep folks organized; when we visited in June, getting on the shuttle was just a pushy free-for-all. The return ride was about a 30 minute wait to board a shuttle. Midweek, late Sept.

We used various trails to connect the trees we wanted to see as we headed up to Wawona Point and through the Upper Grove. Seeing the burned trees from the Washburn Fire made me appreciate fire fighters even more. The Galen Clark tree has burn marks but is still standing.

Wonderful place to be visited. I suggest more than a day as there is plenty of place to visit. It is worth knowing

Credit card theft from car truck while hiking in Yosemite

By Shelene J |

My family (two cars) went up to enjoy the amazing national park and within 1 hour someone broke in (without damage) to our car.
We made the mistake of locking our purses/wallets in the trunk (terrible mistake, I know) as we didn't bring backpacks to carry them the 5+ mile hike we went on. We were told the park valley was too packed/full and to stay up top so we decided we didn't want to go thru 3 hours of traffic to drive thru the valley and went tot he Mariposa Grove to hike, we were back at our cars within 1 1/2 hours of arriving. There is no cell service so we didn't get an alert from our credit card companies about the charges until we were 20+ minutes outside the park, we stopped looked thru our belongs and realized we had been robbed. By that time they had already charged $7,000 between 5 credit cards at the 2 local Oakhurst grocery stores by purchasing $1,500 to $1900 of Visa gift cards in a single transaction (this is crazy because what clerk would not check ID for these types of transaction in a local small mountain town?) We went to both stores as we were alerted they were still charging (multiple credit cards and they all hadn't been reported stolen yet (because it take each one about 10 minutes). We called the Sheriff and they met us at the Vons where they thief were, and the clerk reported a group of 4 men had been for hours (not suspicious?) The Sheriff couldn't do anything, they left the store got in their cars (2 different ones) and drove off. It will take a week to get he video and identify them. By the time we cancelled all our cards, the total loss was over $10,000.
We believe the people must have come to the area we parked, watched us put our items in the truck and then followed us for a short period on the trail then turned back to our cars to break. We believe they either had a key fob device that mirrored mine when I locked it, or they used a device to unlock the doors by sticking it between the car door to unlock it then popping the truck from inside the car.
We are very lucky they didn't take our IDs, just credit cards and $500 in cash. They even left us all lee[ a small amount of cash ($7-$20) and didn't take our visa gift cards we had in our wallets.
I made a mistake by leaving my items in my truck. DON"T LEAVE YOURS, TAKE THEM WITH YOU!

Great short Hike! Moderate in difficulty, a little steep.

By kkleinrn |

Perhaps not the best of times but we had a great experience. The hike 1.9 miles up the well worn trail through the woods, or the paved highway is necessary at this time to arrive at the entrance to the Mariposa Grove. Ok, I'm in my 60's and hiked with my 3 grandkids 5 and under, we had to help them up the trail a lot but finally arrived at the top. A great hike! So proud of our little hikers! Beautiful! Perhaps our expectations were lower than some but we had a great time and loved the hike. We did opt to walk back down the highway, no cars, it's just an easy downhill walk, 1.9 miles. If you take the road you can totally bring a stroller. We limited our experience to seeing the sequoias at the entrance to the Grove. There are some amazing ones just as you start down the highway from the parking lot. I totally still think it's worth a visit. We'll hit Sequoia National Park another day to see more of the giants - but the hike is a great one!

The place to see giant Sequoias

By Boutip |

Best place to see giant sequoias. Be ready to do a bit of driving as it is located on the outskirt of the park. Plenty of parking and you have to use the shuttle to get to the sequoias. Nice little walk in the forest where you can appreciate all the Sequoias and take wonderful pictures. This is a must.

Incredible!

By Odyssey796690 |

We took the shuttle to the BIG trees trail. It was so beautiful! The trees are giants & it puts one in awe of nature. Thank you yosemite conservancy for remodeling the trail , making it easy for all to enjoy! ❤️

One of the jewels of Yosemite

By John Sowell |

The Mariposa Grove is one of Yosemite's greatest wonders. It recently reopened following a $40 million renovation that took three years to complete.

It's amazing to realize how utterly stupid and irresponsible park scientists and officials were previously. They paved roads next to the giant sequoia trees and disrupted the natural flow of water from snow runoff and rain, preventing the trees from receiving full benefit. And that doesn't include the brain surgeon decision to tunnel through one of the trees so people could drive through it. Brilliant.

It's great to see someone finally realized there were better ways to manage the trees, some of North America's most spectacular. The roads have been removed and the boardwalks raised above the ground to allow water to feed the tree roots. And there's no tram to belch gas fumes to disrupt people's enjoyment of the sequoias.

These are national treasures that deserve protection and tender loving care. It's nice to see them get that treatment finally.

Wow!!!!!!

By nirit i |

Yosemite is the most beautiful place I have ever been to.
The nature is shown at it best, the waterfalls, the cliffs and those giant trees are breathtaking!
Take a day and just absorb the feeling of seeing such wonderful sites.
I will definitely return.

Excellent - something for everyone

By momo-colorado |

The 3 year restoration project (the largest in the park’s history!) was well worth it - it removed parking lots and added a beautifully constructed boardwalk that helps minimize the impact to the land & trees and allows a maximum number of visitors at all levels of accessibility to experience the grove. This is how a park should be managed.

A free shuttle that runs every ten minutes ferries people to the grove, and from there you can choose your own adventure. There are four main loops that take you through the grove, with the longest at 7 miles. Educational panels provide a good amount of information.

The trees themselves are magnificent and it’s simply amazing to spend time in their presence.

Mariposa Big Trees (Very Few Little Trees)

By 7274Pillars |

The Grizzly Giant was magnificent. Hiked to the cabin in the woods. Walked about 5 miles. Nobody was home. Saw lots of squirrels. As tall as the trees were, I suspected these were elite level squirrels, like the special forces of squirrels. I left them alone. Not that I normally mess with squirrels. ‘Cause I don’t.

Totally Worth It!

By Wendy S |

So beautiful, total worth driving down to the lower end of the park. For sure take the bus back to the tree though, I mean unless you have time to hike all day.

Majesty and Serenity

By John H |

Take your time and enjoy this place, which you surely will. It wasn't as crowded as I thought it might be- perhaps it helped that I was there two weekends before Memorial Day-, which helped me savor it even more. I took the trail all the way to Wawona Point (14 miles round trip, I believe), and I'm glad I did, as there were very few people once I got past the main attractions, which also are well worth the visit! I'm glad they made the improvements, even if it added four miles to the hike since there was no shuttle service from the main parking lot. The hike is moderate in difficulty, a bit more so if you go all the way to the Point, but still very doable, and the trails are easy to follow. The Sequoias themselves are fantastic, and Wawona Point was quite a bonus!

Beautiful peaceful place

By travelgal1994 |

You must go see these beautiful trees!
The preservation is well done! It’s wonderful to be able to go at your own pace and enjoy each area. The history and stories behind these trees should be told more here at the grove in a clearer way. If we hadn’t seen the Yosemite film about the grove we wouldn’t have known. The giant trees are incredible!

Breathtaking

By legsbell |

I have been to the grove many times and I continue to be awed by the beauty and majesty of these Giants. The new walking paths and shuttle service are great as they help protect the trees. Go early to avoid the crowds.

Good substitute if no time for Sequoia NP

By Angie |

We stopped off here on the way out of the southern exit of Yosemite NP. You park up and get the free shuttle bus up to the Grove then choose the route you want to walk. Take water with you as there is a long slow climb at first. A great experience being near these beautiful ancient trees.

Enoyed Grizzly Giant

By Vic P |

After parking, you take a bus to a trail head to walk to Grizzly Giant. We took the upper loop back but was interupted with the deer want to see what we were doing. Met people and had a great time.

Fantastic Experience

By Mike G |

My friends and I had a great time at the Mariposa Grove this weekend. It was actually my third or fourth time visiting the grove; however, this was my first time getting a tour with one of the park rangers, and it was exceptionally well done. Ranger John Woolman did a fantastic job of explaining the history of the grove, teaching us about all of the types of trees in the grove, and explaining about how prescribed burning helps the forest thrive. He added so much to our experience, and we were so lucky to have happened upon the tour he was giving. In the future, I will always make sure to get there in time for the tour when I'm bringing friends who haven't been before.

Excellent Restoration

By PacificNWFamily |

The three year restoration of the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias was worth it. The NPS has done an excellent job of creating two visitor areas, the Welcome Plaza where you park and catch the shuttle, and the Arrival Area where you begin your hikes. I am so glad that Mariposa Grove no longer has a loud shuttle with a ranger on a loudspeaker describing what vehicle passengers can see; now it’s a quiet experience in the forest.

Shuttles were delayed on the June morning I visited Mariposa Grove. The driver was apologetic but did a good job of getting us up to the Big Trees. She explained a few things and then dropped us off.

I linked several trails together so I could see some of my favorite trees and get to Wawona Point quickly. Trail signs are excellent. After I passed the California Tunnel Tree, I did not see another hiker. My time on the trail was quiet and almost magical. On my return back to the Arrival Area, I saw many more people enjoying the grove.

Tip: take a photo of the trail map before you set out or print a map at home.

Beautiful Grove and Trails for hiking!

By Penny E |

We loved our stop at Mariposa Grove! Nice paved paths on the lower section and enjoyable climb up to dirt trails of several different lengths. Make sure you also do the Swinging Bridge hike!

Less frequented that the main valley but a stunning side trip if you have the time.

By ragriff |

This impressive stand of sequoias is accessed by shuttle bus from a car park just inside of the main gate. There are several walks from an easy circuit taking less than and hour to complete to the full circuit that will need a minimum of 3-4 hours walking time. Much of the lower circuit is very flat or on boardwalks and would be accessible by wheel chairs and for those with walking difficulties.
Area was affected by a fire 2 seasons ago, but is recovering well with evidence of new growth visible along most tracks. Some very impressive groups of trees have been unaffected and overall the current surge of rebuilding has greatly enhanced the area.
This is a worthwhile side trip if you have the time.

Majestic giants

By kay-cee-1138 |

Sequoias are different from redwood trees, but the feeling of awe in their presence is the same. The Mariposa Grove is on the far south side of Yosemite Nationa Park and appeared to be the most accessible of the three modest sequoia groves in the area.
The grove itself is reached by a shuttle bus from the main parking lot at the welcome plaza. The shuttle ran very frequently on the Friday we visited; we didn't have to wait for more than about 5 minutes for the next bus, coming or going. There are public restrooms at the drop-off point at the edge of the grove.
There is a trail system in the grove, so a visitor can walk as little or as much as one wants. Signs point the way to particular landmarks. The paths from the drop-off point are very well-maintained and we found it easy even for the mobility-impaired person in our party.
The trees themselves are the stars of the place, of course. They are huge and ancient and there are even a few that naturally fell long ago and can be viewed up close to really give one a appreciation for their sheer size. The trail near the transport drop-off offers a number of interpretive panels about the flora and fauna of the area.

Well done

By Dirk W |

The hike to the site is wonderful, the timber walkways beautiful. They allow you to walk among these giant trees without disturbing the surrounding area. Good facilities on-site as well. Easy and most enjoyable day out.

Easy and well worth the time.

By Tara F |

This is an easy walk with some uphill. Beautiful Sequoias and accessible to all ages. A must see on your visit to Yosemite. We did this right after Sentinel Dome trail and enjoyed it very much.

Nice, but not as good as Sequoia National Park

By Mark P |

Recently reopened after restoring the grove from decades of mismanagement by windshield tourism. You now park in an outlying lot and a free shuttle takes you to the grove.

Well worth the drive here

By Andrea D |

Well worth the drive to see these Sequoias. They have a shuttle that takes to the Grove of trees. Easy trails to walk.

The ideal place to observe redwood

By caveman |

Beautiful place to contemplate some of the most amazing redwoods in the US. I recommend arriving early to take a good place in the parking lot. Then take a free shuttle that takes you to the start of the trail. The tour is simple and can be done (complete) in just half a day. In addition, an extra is that it is at the gates of Yosemite National Park, making it the perfect stop on arrival/departure. Highly recommended.

Big Trees!

By Rodney B |

You park and take a shuttle in to the grove. The trail is easy and wide, but climbs up going in. It is about 0.6 miles to the Giant Grizzly but there are plenty of trails here to see other giant trees. This is just inside the South entrance so hit it going either in or out of the park. Restrooms are at the car lot and again a ways in to the grove. Great trees!

Beautiful area but a long walk

By Oldrecruiter |

To get to see the trees, you must do a 5 mile hike if the shuttle busses are not running- it really is worth it, but I am not a hiker!
Take water and snacks- its nice to stop and rest once you have reached the grove!

Beautiful and giant trees

By Daniel F |

The Maripose grove is the first turn to the right. it has shuttle that has approxamitly 2-4 stops (you get off at stop 2). You go the trail for an hour and a half, and see the iconic trees (grizzly giant and tunnel tree). Nice 2 hours tops.

Nice walk, but

By Kathy D |

I would skip it especially if you are planning to visit any other parks in California that has redwoods.

Relaxing hike.

By Paul Smith Palliser |

This was our first stop in our 5 day trip to Yosemite. It was a relaxing and beautiful hike to start things off. We only did the easy loop. Went in September so shuttles were functioning.

Massive trees!

By kevan j |

We did the basic hike that everyone else does. Not too long, not too difficult. We saw some enormous trees, including one of the few remaining trees you can walk through the trunk (big enough tunnel for a car). The drive here from Yosemite Valley is part of the charm.

Awe Inspiring

By Rebecca N |

We visited years ago. There is now a bus that takes you to the grove entrance. There is a large parking lot to park your car and a lovely welcome plaza with restrooms and of course, a gift shop. We hiked to Wawona Point, about a 4 hour round trip hike if you are fit. If you hike at a slower pace, allow up to six hours round trip. Once you get past the loop trail (.5 mile or so), the crowds thin and you can experience the true peace and quiet of the grove. Hiking beyond the loop gives visitors the opportunity to see uniquely named trees such as the Clothespin tree and the Faithful Couple, as well as spectacular views from Wawona Point. There is a restroom (no running water) about half way up the trail. An exceptional experience for those who have the time and stamina to hike the distance.

Not worth the hike

By Paige C |

If you have ever seen a giant sequoia anywhere else-Muir Woods, N Coast, Kings Canyon, you can skip Mariposa Grove. I love to hike and I love trees, but this was so disappointing. 2 mile hike uphill through manzanita that was very exposed and hot then you get to the "grove" and there are very few trees! I was expecting a beautiful, lush, cooling hike and grove. Nope. Unfortunately fire damage and managed thinning has reduced this grove to a few trees. I would not recommend. There is no shuttle right now. Maybe if the shuttle is running it would be worth a quick look.

Amazing Giant Sequoias

By TravelingAnnK |

Amazing giant sequoias. There is a bus that takes you from the visitor center to the grove of Sequoias. We came in the afternoon and did not have much time until the last bus back. There are hikes that you can take, we picked the shorter hike and added on a hike to the Grizzly Giant Sequoia. It was so worthwhile.

Amazing place

By TheSpear |

The added 2 mile hike in and out makes this a little more challenging but it is amazing and highly recommended.

Stunning sights, just slightly lacking?

By LEHeaven |

I feel very conflicted writing a less than excellent review for such an incredible sight. Sequoia's are arguably the most incredible trees on the planet, and i am privileged to have seen them. We were able to have a morning here as we were travelling out of yosemite, which is now probably my favourite place in the USA. I think its a great idea to keep traffic away from the main grove, and happily obliged the shuttle. I do feel a small drink stand or cafe would be so welcomed at the shuttle point. They have a shop, but very minimal drinks, despite a huge footfall of people. We visited the visitor centre further up, just felt this was a missed opportunity here. We didnt have hours and hours so i felt a bit sad we wouldnt have the time to walk up further into the grove. They drop you off at the bottom, which makes for a great short walk to see about 10-12 sequoias, nestled amongst redwoods. Its mainly boardwalk too which is lovely and accessible for people, albeit it feels a bit of a rabbit warren at first. But the walk further up takes significantly longer. I really wish the shuttle had 2 stops so we could have had the option to see more, and more information at the bottom advising people that other than toilets, there really isnt any other facilities further up that we could see. Giant Grizzly was a great must see, the tunnel tree didnt really interest me because as with everything, humans have spoilt it! So my advice would be to come prepared with drinks and snacks if needed, come early to get a parking space (its not huge at the bottom), and have the opportunity to make the most of the grove and walk around for longer.

Handicap access

By Barbara B |

I thank the parks for giving special attention to handicap access. I would not have been able to see this area without it. I wish I could have gotten closer to the trees but understand they have a fragile root system. I wanted to experience the energy of the old trees.

Breathtaking giants

By Ken F |

We hiked the whole Mariposa Grove - to the Grizzly Giant, Faithful Couple, Clothespin Tree, Mariposa Tree, Fallen Tunnel Tree, Surviving Tunnel Tree, etc.
It can take most of the day to do the whole grove.
We saw abundant wildlife and it was indeed breathtaking to stand between those giants. What a peaceful and quiet place.
Take your time to enjoy this natural wonder!

Lovely forrest

By Thom Mandos |

The forrest is beautiful and when i visited it wasn't to crowded. The problem was the busses where down and therefore you had to do a hike to the start of the trail before the real hike started. There where some beautiful sequoias in the park but not as much as aspected. All and all it do was special to see these beautiful trees in real life. Saw a family of wild deer on the end of the trail that made it extra special.

Tastefully restored and maintained

By Kirsty S |

A considerable amount of work has been done to concerve this Grove of Giant Sequoia trees. This includes creating a park and ride facility for access which works very efficiently. Good choice of way marked routes of various lengths.
Would visit again.

It's a great place, but be careful as the trams may stop running at times!

By J -3PO |

Unfortunately, the tram was stopped at the parking lot, so we walked along the trail from there. It was quite a long walk (about 3km of gradual uphill) and a tough one for the elderly.

Great views of the sequias, but take the long hike!

By ron c |

We loved our visit to the mariposa grove. Outside of Muir Woods in CA, this was our first visit to a large grove and it was really breathtaking. Most folks on tours or visiting only go on the shorter trail. Take the long trail and see the trees around the upper grove. We would have hiked more, but missed a few shortcuts we could have taken on perimeter trails They could use some better maps to show how the short cuts will save you time, especially for folks that dont want longer hikes. Fantastic views for us with fantastic weather!

Three choices of trails

By Dan R |

With the new design, you park a large parking lot (fills up by about 11am). Take a free bus up to the grove. First trail is about a 15 minute loop, flat, works even for wheel chairs. The second trial takes about 1.5 hours to see some of the giants. The third trail takes you up to the upper grove, and is a much major hike. Take water with you. They do have toilets along the trails.

Unbelievable Trees

By theokengineer |

I really enjoyed the trees at the Grove. I only went as far as the tree you can walk thru, which is about a mile into the park, but that was enough for me considering that I only had one day to explore the park.

If the shuttle is down wait for it

By Pukeonthestreet |

I can't stress enough how much easier it would've been with the shuttle up. When the shuttle is down the hike up is not easy for most people between the elevation and smoke it is rough. There are way too many cranky park rangers giving out bad or little information.

Stunning

By traveller |

The Grove walkways have been renovated since our last visit and very much improved. There’s a free shuttle from the parking lot and then about a 15-20 minute walk to the Grizzely Giant for anyone who has a moderate level of fitness. The full Grizzely Giant trail loop took us around 75 minutes with stops and it’s not to be missed. There are so many fabulous Sequoias to admire and be in awe

A L E R T the P U B L I C >>> N P S

By doublemdoublet |

Rangers were wrong. TIP: Read these 2021 posts people. No family should need to walk 6 miles to see these trees. I saw toddlers, little dogs and the elderly all on their near death hike to the trees during the heatwave. Many never made it. What a National Park Service (NPS) mistake this is! The Rangers are set up on wrong side of the visitor center. The public unknowingly walks to the trailhead without NPS input. You'd think someone is charge would step up. The Shuttles are not running. The New Visitor Center is now 2 miles away from the old Center so everyone with outdated guide books is ill prepared. Plan to see sequoias elsewhere.

Awesome and Magnificent

By Simon682015 |

We had a limited time staying near Yosemite and on arrival during the afternoon we were advised to go to Mariposa Grove later that afternoon. We arrived about 5pm drove straight into the park and had no wait for the shuttle bus.
The Sequoias were amazing, definitely a must see at Yosemite. I think the time we went was perfect, it was quiet and you could wander along the boardwalks and follow the routes enjoying the magnificence and beauty of these ancient trees. When we were there the shuttle didn't stop until 8 pm so plenty of time to get back. It also meant we missed th extreme heat of the day too.
The Yosemite entrance ticket was for two days so when we returned the next day to visit the Village and Glacier Point we didn't have to pay again, it's really great value for money!
You won't be disappointed

Sunset was beautiful walking down the 2 mile road to our car in December

By MichelleM408 |

My advice is based on what worked for my group. Wear water proof mid length hiking boots, bring a ton of water and walking poles. You need the poles going uphill in the snow safely.

The December hike through the woods is not super hard for hikers. It’s hilly. There’s more snow at the very top at the grove where it was super cold the day we were there. It was mild at the start and freezing at the grove. Have quality gloves and warm hat that covers your ears for the grove walk.

Note that families tend to separate at the top. Some people want to rest by the bathrooms while others want to walk farther. Cell phones don’t work great up there so come up with a plan to meet up. Would have been nice for the park to add a bulletin board under the baby awnings where people can post old fashion notes for one another!

If you walk down at sunset, take the road and wear a miner’s headlamp. That worked well for us. The sunset was beautiful.

Better than ever after recent renovations

By Gregory S |

The renovations are great! You can't get as close to some of the trees as in the past but that is better for the health of the trees. Good use of the conservancy's funds! I only wish that the museum was still open but I understand that it was not considered structurally safe so it is closed and is now listed as a cabin and you can still see the outside. :(

One of my FAVORITE SPOTS in Yosemite!

By JuneNY |

After you park at the Visitors Center (which has a small gift shop), you hop on a shuttle for a short drive to the grove. This was very efficient with shuttles leaving every few minutes.

The grove is beautiful and has well maintained wide walkways. There are lots of spots to get great pictures.

When we exited the grove, there was a bus ready to go, but it waited for us. This is a MUST DO if you are in Yosemite National Park.

Excellent and easy

By DutchTX |

A must see, these sequoias are up to 2000 years old and majestic. The first part of the park has several "famous" trees, and many people are walking there; but in case you want to walk to Wamona Point, then you will see many more and absolutely not crowded. We did the hike in 4 hours, including many photo stops, and a lunch; also take some of the non-paved paths, they are really nice.

Beautiful trees

By Jane P |

Stunning trees! The size of them is amazing. There are all so old. Such a beautiful place and most definitely well worth a visit. You won't be disappointed. There a number of different length walks depending on how long you've got. We went late afternoon mid July and not too busy. You park up then get the shuttle bus to the various walks. We did about an hour walk. The drive down from Yosemite Valley is just breath taking. It's not that far but takes a little while as the road is so winding. So sad to see so many burnt trees from the fires along the route.

Easiest accessible sequoia trees in Yosemite, recently updated trails

By Jeremy044 |

This was my first stop in Yosemite National Park as I drove up from Los Angeles and entered through the South entrance. I parked in the lot and waited about 10 minutes for the shuttle to take me to the grove. It was cool and had been rainy with thick clouds overhead. There were still about 40 people on the shuttle with me. I tried to stay ahead of the bulk of the group as I would rather enjoy the area with a bit of solace. I walked the main path past the fallen Monarch, The Bachelor and the 3 Graces, The Grizzly Giant, and To the California Tunnel Tree (A living tree that had a large hole cut out of its base and you can walk through it). I turned back after the California Tunnel Tree as I was limited on time. I saw some mule deer, chipmunks, woodpeckers and other birds while in the grove. The trail was easy although there were some places that were muddy and had flowing water over a small area. (It had been raining just before I arrived) The forest is beautiful and the recent path improvements and railings should help it stay that way. Having been to Sequoia National Park previously, this area didn't measure up to the forests of Sequoia. There weren't nearly as many trees and they weren't as big nor as impressive as the Sequoia Park trees, which is why my rating isn't higher. Perhaps if I had gone further into the grove it may have been more impressive, but the signage made me seem I had already seen many of the highlights.

Magnificent trees but get off the beaten path

By McShane J |

We were amazed by the giant grizzly and the other named trees but found the perimeter trail to be a little more intimate and enjoyable ( but we did not go through all of the upper grove).

Can't Miss This on Your Visit

By Haim B |

Amazing and breathtaking views everywhere. Quite a nice hike (if you don't take the shuttle, be prepared to take a two mile hike from the parking to the main Grove.

You also can't miss visiting El Capitan (after "Tunnel View")

If massive trees are your thing, come on down!

By Avalon1803 |

They are super-massive. Nice trails up the slopes through the forests to the Grizzly Giant (the huge tree at the top of the trail). I have a disability and the warden gave me permission to drive up to the top. It was the other three people I was with that confirmed the trail was great

An Easy, but uphill trail walk to see Grizzly

By tremm298 |

This is one of the more easily access sequoia groves in Yosemite Park. The other major one are down steep valley trails and this is a very nice uphill walk. We went of the ranger lead talk, and while there are no picnic facilities, we ate our sandwiches below these grand trees on the benches around Grizzly.

Besutiful

By Maca |

Such a beautiful place! Loved the trees, the fallen ones, the standing ones, but most of all I enjoyed the wildlife. I was mesmerised by a squirrel eating, another (smaller) peeling a cone, and a tiny chipmunk (I think) scurrying away.

A great add on to a day at Yosemite

By rozrae |

We stopped off here before leaving the park. Parking is free and so is the shuttle bus from the car park. Leaving it later in the day meant there weren’t any queues and the walk around was quiet. It’s open quite late. You can take the easy or more strenuous walks and it’s really informative. There’s an info & toilet block at the bus stop. Def worth stopping off to see.

Go to the upper area - lots more trees

By Mary K |

We intended to do the 1-2 walk through the lower area. This is where most people tour. Upon walking around, we would see signs for a named tree that was only .2 (point 2) miles away. We would walk there. Again we we see another sign indicating another named tree .2 or .3 miles. We would go. They next thing we knew we are in the upper area. There are A LOT more trees in the upper area. If you can, try to go there. It will consume 3-4 hours.

Only for the able

By Joseph H |

I've been coming to this grove since the late 80's. The trees are impressive. However after being closed for THREE years - which is blamed on one winter which probably got work started one month late - the grove is more inaccessible than ever because of the closure of the tram. 95% of the sequoias in the grove are in the spectacular upper level which requires a hike over over 2 miles - one way - and a significant elevation gain of approximately 900 feet. That's not a problem for anyone in my family, but when I hiked up to the cabin in the upper grove recently it was saddening to see how few people were able to make it up there. It was strangely lonely compared to the 4 or 5 other times I've been there. Good for me; bad for the public in general. Young children, out of shape folks, and the elderly are being denied access to the best part of the grove. Unless you're in really good shape, don't bother. They even closed the cabin museum. If you have a handicap sticker, accommodations can be made, but that's a small percentage of the people I'm referring to. Not to be all negative the rangers were friendly, the trees are astounding, and the signage and trails were good.

Breathtaking and Gorgeous

By Saugor |

There is choice of hikes for different levels depending on the availability of time and walking capacity. We opted for the moderate Grizzly Giant Loop trail. The paths are very well maintained. We had arrived there by about 9am to beat the crowds and the heat in July.

Better than where the masses were

By Renee L |

Not as many people go out to Mariposa as the other sites. We hit the first free shuttle from the parking lot and were off- allowing us the entire park to ourselves including unobstructed views of Giant Grizzly. Sit and just look at the size of the limbs coming off of this magnificent tree

Very Impressive

By Driver88 |

The sequoias are awesome! Nice hiking trails throughout the park. Limited parking. We took the shuttle in and hiked back to the parking. Hiking this way was mostly downhill. Long and windy drive to get to parking.

See the great Sequoia trees

By Barbara |

Beautiful area with large old sequoia trees. Easy/moderate hiking to the tree called Grizzly Giant, as well as Tunnel Tree and many more. If you can join a park ranger tour, do it! You will learn so much about the giznt sequoias!

It’s not in the main Yosemite Valley area, but don’t miss it

By CasieLH |

Our favorite part of everything we did in Yosemite. The trees are so much bigger than a photo can capture. We took the 2-mile Grizzly Giant Loop Trail late on a weekday in October and had parts of it to ourselves. You take a free bus 2 miles to trailheads, then choose your walk. The one we did goes uphill a bit but it’s not bad. Definitely worth it. It’s dusty, so avoid wearing white or canvas shoes if possible.

Lovely, quiet place to walk around and enjoy these magnificent trees!

By rewardgal |

We visited Sequoia Park years ago and found this part of Yosemite just as amazing. I loved the quiet and informational plaques. We caught up with a ranger-led group and when we saw a deer nestled at the base of the Grizzly Giant he told us that this was only the second time in his 10 years at the park that he had seen a deer resting there. The improvements made in the past few years make the visit very easy. Our two miles walking took us to all the major spots and we never felt cramped in by hordes of tourists as in the valley.

Very Organized

By Liz |

Visiting the Mariposa Grove is a must for Yosemite. The bus ride back to the grove was enjoyable getting to see huge trees. We went early in the morning, and it was not crowded at all. The buses run constantly, so it was easy to catch a ride back when you're ready.

no shuttle and visitor center wasn't open in June of 2021

By koabug |

The most southern entrance to Yosemite National Park is right next to Mariposa Grove Visitor Center. Be sure to have your day pass ready as the rangers are checking for them (June 2021). This attraction has the most parking spots in Yosemite Park. The visitor center wasn't open nor was the shuttle working in June 2021. To reach the trailhead where the Big Tree Loop Trail (closed due to trail maintenance) and Grizzly Giant Loop Trail start you have to either hike 1.5 miles in the forest which was nice but all uphill or walk uphill on the asphalt road which the shuttle drives on if it was working. So plan accordingly if you are tight on time to see all the sights in a day.

Huge

By Paul M |

A must visit, these trees are huge with plenty to get some good photos. We saw some deer close up which was a bonus.

Magnificent renovation of a world class treasure

By BobandDenise1979 |

Just inside the southern entrance to Yosemite National Park, the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoia redwood trees is one of the great nature experiences to be had in California. The recent renovations of paths, roads, restrooms, parking areas and captioning has made it more accessible than ever. A crisscrossing series of trails gives the hiker plenty of options from easy to moderately challenging. The views of the most well known trees here--the Grizzly Giant, the Fallen Tunnel Tree, the Bachelor and Three Sisters, and the Faithfull Couple--have been enhanced by careful forest clearing, ground cover planting, and lots of new fencing to prevent erosion and intrusive shortcutting by funloving visitors. We like the fact that parking is at a remove from the grove, so a free shuttle bus takes you to and from your destination. This prevents the parking lot from being completely overwhelmed by hordes of tourists and buses. Deer regularly wander through this park. We find peace and quiet, solace, reverence, joy, and impermanence here.

Stunning

By DaveyB1962 |

The trails are Mariposa Grove are not to be missed. The Giant Sequoias are simply stunning. If you are observant you should looks of wildlife too!
The only thing that lets it down is that it falls within the (Yosemite) National Park and they have introduced a reservation system meaning you cannot enter the park between 06.00 and 16.00 unless you have a reservation, but when we looked it was fully booked days ahead so we had to get there at 05.30!

Difficult to access

By wsritchie |

I am visiting Yosemite and took a side trip down to see the Mariposa Grove. Only way to access the grove is via shuttle bus or car with handicap placard. I am traveling with my dog like many people do, so accessing the grove was next to impossible. I don’t expect them to let me walk my dog around the grove, but I also don’t want to leave my dog in the car unattended while I ride a shuttle bus several miles back into the woods just to see the grove. I feel a lot better when I can park right near the area, take a quick trip through, and check on the dog several times if extra time is needed. I’m not sure what it is with the NPS, but I’ve been to a lot of NPS parks and they all seem to be anti-dog.

Special grove to walk in

By LeeMahwah |

Went to Mariposa grove 2 times. One cloudy day and another after it snowed. So wonderful to be walking amongst the giant sequoias. In the snow, trees looked magical. Used hiking poles, since walkways were messy

The trees are incredible

By Natty Park Traveler |

I will never tire of seeing the size of the trees on the west coast. The giant trees are amazing. They truly make you feel so small, but create such an appreciation for life in general.

A nice place to walk giving a totally different image of Yosemite

By Valerie O |

I'm so glad we made the trip out of the valley to walk in Mariposa Grove. It's a totally different perspective from the awesome granite structures in and around the valley. The giant sequoias are beautiful. Once you park in the parking lot, there a a shuttle bus that takes you to the beginning of the trailhead. The shuttle bus comes about every 10 minutes or so. Now that it's considered summer, the last bus leaving to go back down to the parking lot is at 8pm. The bus driver said they prefer if people take the 7:30pm one because by 8pm it's very crowded with all the people leaving the grove. There are many options for different types of walks, from short and easy, to long and strenuous. We did the Giant Grizzly walk, which including the shuttle back and forth, took us about an hour and a half. This was at a somewhat leisurely pace.

Better places to see.

By David S |

Place was nasty, brush and deadfall everywhere. Yours were crowded and not timely. Not well kept. Very disappointing that this place was in this condition for such noble trees. Did not take photos.

Stunning beauty

By DickandRobin |

A must see in the park. Slow down and soak in the beauty. Bring a camera, but stay on the trails in this delicate ecosystem.

Walk with the ranger

By Donna K |

We walked with Lindsay Sweet, a park ranger for a couple of hours, we learned so much about the trees, nature and the parks, above all, Lindsay‘s love of the Sequoia tress touched our heart. We had no intention to follow a program, just happened that we were there when the bus driver announced a walk with the ranger program would start right a way. We thought to listen for few minutes and then go our way, but we were hooked, and felt couldn’t hear enough from her. Thank you deeply, Lindsay! We would definitely recommend anyone who goes there to do this walk, with Lindsay if possible, and say hi for us from Germany.

Settings were not as natural as I thought

By Chiucheong |

Perhaps it was just a while after restoration/renovation, I didn’t feel that we were as close to nature as I did in Muir Woods. It’s felt like a walk through displays.. the land was also too sparse for my liking though I’m not sure if it was done purposely or it was just the way it is. I did see a lot of fallen trees though so I wondered if it was done on purpose to let the star trees grow better. We only had time to take one of the shorter loops that feature the Grizzly Giant and perhaps we’ve missed the good parts.

Never too many of these giants

By mesatraveler |

Giant redwoods are always spectacular in every season and this grove will not disappoint. This is definitely one of the highlights of the park.

Accessible Trees

By Jacida |

Truly amazing. It was a great way to start our tour of Yosemite. My husband has mobility issues and we found it very easy to see everything. We were even able to get to the tunnel tree using our handicap auto tag. My favorite spot was the toppled giant. It boggles the mind at how big those trees are!

Majestic

By Lv2travel |

The Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias is UNSURPASSED BEAUTY unlike any other you have ever seen or experienced! A definite must see again and again. Peaceful tranquility and you may even see a chickaree or some deer

Incredible

By Dougrun8 |

I have waited to see these giants my whole life(58 years). I will be back! They are a spiritual experience of nature!
HUGE and MAGNIFICENT!!!!!
A must see!

A great introduction to majestic trees

By RCKat |

The easily accessible grove is a really good introduction to these majestic and historic trees. The walks and hikes are well signposted with a lot of information to keep you interested along the way.

Pretty amazing walk .. got to see the grizzly and the tunnel sequoia trees .. nature’s Wonders
Easy shuttle ride .. slow peaceful walk and huge trees .. definitely worth a visit

Giant Sequoia

By John F |

An awe inspiring experience among these ancient giants, the history of the world that they have been living for, mind blowing. Although the weather was cold and wet at times, still a great experience. It would be wise to wear good walking boots as the ground can be very uneven, depending on the time of year a waterproof would be advisable. We visited for half a day about enough time. Don’t forget your camera.

Peaceful Time with Ancient Trees

By Gvgdb1189 |

We thoroughly enjoyed our walk up into the Mariposa Grove. We went around 8AM in early November. It was almost deserted this early in the day. It was a little cold until the sun was high enough around 10AM to warm us up. The stillness and quietness here was powerful. We saw the 2700 yr old Grizzly Giant, it was massive and breathtaking.

We spent extra time walking the loop on our way back down. Several mule deer walked within a few yards while eating. There are many Sequoia here to photgraph as well as many others (Ponderosa pines, etc.)

Bring drinking water!

By Marion H |

The road is open to hikers, but not to the shuttle service. We hiked it yesterday and it was a very warm day( high around 80*). The park has not turned on the water at the top of the road….a 2 mile hike! Then it is another one mile hike to see the sequoias . That means a 6 mile round trip hike. So be aware to bring lots of water!!!
The trees were awesome !!!

Spend Some Time with the Sequoias

By Evelyn C |

Kudos to the park service for protecting our trees! The area has been improved with a new shuttle and reworked paths. We walked the two-mile loop to see the tunnel tree and the Grizzly giant. The trail is moderate and takes you to many of the Big Trees. FYI: arrive at the Welcome Center early to find parking. The shuttle takes you to the Arrival Area and you can choose a short or long walk.

Amazing place within Yosemite park

By Gashsweena |

Arrive early and take the bus up to Mariposa grove. These trees are amazing and a must see in person. Bring good hiking shoes as their are several hiking options. Worth spending a 1/2 day here.

Giant Sequoias

By Steve T |

The bus is the only way to get up here, unless you have handicapped placards, where you follow bus in. You will be walking between .1 miles or up to 5, depending on where you go.

Finally seeing the famous Sequoias!

By Richard C |

What a wonderful day in Mariposa Grove. Being our first time in Yosemite we knew the Sequoias in Mariposa Grove would be the first site we wanted to see. The area was busy and parking was very packed. There is a shuttle service to the trailhead which is very necessary (without the shuttle you would have to take a very steep 2 mile hike just to get to the trailhead). There are various hikes you can take and obviously the shorter routes are much busier. Have an idea prior to your trip on what you want to see to better determine the route you want to take. Our family went further than a majority of the crowds and made our way to the Telescope Tree (very cool to actually go inside a Sequoia!). Our "custom" hike was just under 6 miles. Take breaks and plenty of water especially on a warm day!

Shuttles not operating as of 6/21/21

By Justin P |

Shuttles not operating, long hike, may be better off driving down to Sequoia NP to see giant Sequoias. Love Yosemite but disappointed that the shuttles are still not operating.

Wonderful but destroyed by wildfires

By Faker |

Free walk, really accessible and well explained, you have the choice between differents loops depending on how much you wanna walk.
Don’t be afraid to go for a « strenuous » walk, they are more like mediums.
Concerning the walk itself, wonderful trail in the forest, delivering various landscapes including sadly too many ravaged trees destroyed by wildfires. Especially when approaching the end of the trail, the Wawona Point, where all the top of the hill is burned.
(By the way, the point of view at the top isn’t exceptional, the heart of the trail is the walk into the sequoias)
Protect nature :)

Don't miss the Mariposa Grove

By lin45tx |

This was actually our last stop on our tour and the one we liked the best. We have been to multiple national parks and have seen loads of breathtaking scenery - but the giant sequoias were unique. We are retired so we took our time climbing up the path to the top to see the Grizzly. A true sight to behold, standing next to those giant trees. Some were felled due to fire and you got the perspective of seeing trees in tact on the ground as well as upstanding. Totally worthwhile experience. More sequoias at Sequoia National Park outside of Fresno. We didn't have the time to get there but wish we had.

Huge Sequoias

By Brendan S |

The sequoias in the Mariposa Grove are definitely a highlight of Yosemite. Seeing them involves a 30 mile drive from the Yosemite Valley and a short shuttle bus ride to the trail (or a 2-mile hike). At the Grove, there are several trails through the Grove. There's a two mile loop or a seven-mile loop. The tunnel tree and the Grizzly Giant are on the shorter trail, but the longer one includes the "clothespin" tree (with a hole in the trunk and Wawona Point, which offers a scenic view of the valley. The trail is uphill all the way to Wawona Point, but it's on a wide, graded road. If you've come all the way to Yosemite and you drove to the Grove, you might as well do the whole Trail.

Giant old growth trees of massive grandure

By Sue L |

I gladly took the shuttle out to the Mariposa Grove instead of thinking about how the root systems tolerated tons and tons of vehicles passing over it in the past before the NPS tried to revert it to more a natural setting. They certainly succeeded and enjoyed every moment. The shuttle is the way to go.

Make you become amazed of mother earth

By TheresiaSH |

An easy but pleasurable walk around in the grove. We where all amazed by the threes and what mother nature can create. We had not expected to be so thrilled. A great stop for 2-3 hours if you are in the area.

Glorious!

By kimbolina |

Had always wanted to see these trees and the area exceeded expectations. So happy to see the renovations done to protect these giants. Loved walking the boardwalk and trails - so many butterflies, a few flowers still in bloom, and the trees!!! Majestic, amazing and awe-some!

Favorite place in Yosemite

By Luxetravel23 |

Our favorite place in Yosemite! Several nice and easy trails to walk on. The trees are truly majestic and breathtaking. They have made some changes from before and now you have to park further away n take a shuttle to the grove. It’s all quite easy and probably better for the trees.

love the trees

By rrexerr |

great nature trip, beautiful trees and amazing nature experience. be kind to nature and fellow man and pick up your trash or any you might run across

Unfailingly impressive

By BobandDenise1979 |

The recent work in the Mariposa Grove adds greatly to its character as a shared space with the first peoples (American Indians) who populated this area for centuries before progress drove them out. Now we can return to this grove and feel less like usurpers and more like shared appreciators of this sacred forest in which indigenous tribes cared for the land and knew its secrets for many hundreds of years. There is no shuttle bus in the winter, so the two mile hike from the parking lot allows for a deeper sense of connection to the landscape, the sky and the water that runs through these mountains.

Ok

By MinnesotaRandy |

Glad we went, but much more enjoyed the redwoods as they were more dense and picturess than the sequois.

Beautiful area of Yosemite

By Sarah O |

This was an amazing way to spend a couple hours. This is right near the south entrance of the park. This section of the park had only been opened a couple days when we visited so the shuttles were not running. We left the parking lot about 9 and walked up the road. It took 50 minutes. Once we got up there it was REALLY snowy. The snow was pretty packed but we did slip and slide a little bit. For sake of time, we only hiked out to the tunnel tree (0.7) and then came back the same way. There are much longer hikes you can do if you want. It was a beautiful area of the park. Make sure you pack snacks and water and go to the bathroom before you go up. I would suggest doing this as early as possible to avoid large crowds. Great way to spend 3+ hours.

I Love Nature!

By Ronald Q |

For you nature lovers and hikers, this is definitely a treat. Just a peaceful walk through the park admiring trees that are tall as buildings and thousands of years old. It's just mind boggling to see them in person and how small you are compared to these giants. Make sure you bring lots of fluids as the walks can be rather long and the heat can definitely drain you. There's plenty to do so staying close by for a couple of days is recommended. Also, make sure you bring your camera and not a cheap one. Although the pictures do not do justice you will want to look them over and over again to remember this fascinating park.

Nice place to visit

Access is by shuttle bus which can take awhile and not enough parking to meet demand ( understandable). But the trees are memorable and hikes not to difficult. A good family activity.

very nice walk

By Shlomi F |

short walk between sequoias. very easy walk in relatively shady area. located in the entrance to the park and good place to relax from long driving

Giant Trees

By Joy_lee21 |

If you haven’t seen sequoias before it is about 30 miles from the west entry of El Portal side. There is a shuttle that runs during the summer. During the winter it is about an extra 4 mile round trip to get to the shuttle drop off up a hill or through the trail in the woods. There are some really large sequoias there like Grizzly Bear and the walk through tree.

make this a PRIORITY!!!

By Hollie R |

no photo or documentary will prepare you for the size of these majestic trees! We threw this trip in at the last minute and it was the highlight of our week in Yosemite! the entire forest trail is GORGEOUS. peaceful. calm. There were deer and loads of different bird species. And the beauty and size of the trees can not be explained. you really have to see it to believe it. A once in a lifetime experience!

Almost spiritual

By Guide32874 |

My sisters and I went to the Mariposa Grove as part of a 7 day northern California road trip that included San Francisco and Yosemite. There was such a feeling of peace and at the same time a power much greater than us, that we were literally speechless. No photos can capture that feeling. Everyone should experience it.

Beautiful place, lots of unique trees

By Krishnan R |

This is not just a forest of any trees. It has a lot of sequoia trees with a different history of each. It does involve a little bit of hiking but the trees are nice to see.

The bark on them does not feel like any other tree - very soft and touching overall.

Came here as part of a tour we booked and did not go all the way up but still enjoyed the place overall.

You gotta see it to believe it

By Boingjimgy1st |

Loved our day here after walking 13 miles the dy before. This is tranquil and fantastic. We had the best weather in September and it was relatively quiet. A must see place to visit.

Go, you just have to!

By Mattalie |

We were so happy that the grove us re-opened & the new welcome plaza & shuttle set up is fantastic. We did the grizzly giant loop trail which is a little up & down but not hard. Such amazing trees & great information about their history & environment. It’s very easy to find. There is no food available there. We continued on to tunnel view & Yosemite valley. Bridal veil falls is still going!

impressive and beautiful

By Theo_Holger_Geist |

You are taken by shuttle bus from the parking lot in a short drive to the trees. You are therefore dependent on the travel times of the bus. This should be taken into account when planning your trip.
We had done part of the circuit after the boardwalk. Unfortunately, our time was not enough for more. But these tree giants are very impressive and it is a beautiful spot of earth. Towards evening there were not many other tourists besides us, so it was not overflowing.

Must see while at Yosemite!

By terrycarlson2018 |

Magical experience walking through these majestic giants. So much history....we had a park range guide - a true treat.

Enjoy the trees the way they were meant to be, quietly and on foot

By Richard R |

For decades cars rolled through the grove belching exhaust and making noise. Now there is only silence. The parking lot in the grove is gone. the tram stop and gift shop are gone. all that are left is the shuttle road, shuttle stop and rest rooms. Now when you go to the grove you park by the highway, go to the shuttle stop and take a free shuttle to the grove. Once there you are free to walk the trails through the grove. Most of the old roads have been reclaimed. Now it is just hikers and walker traveling amongst the big trees. This is the way it should be. It is a nice change. Safe travels. Cheers.

Beautiful Sequoias!

By Seward07 |

We’ve been to Muir Woods so wasn’t sure if this would be different…and it was. The trees are absolutely massive, tall and have been here for ages..literally. Loved being in the forest and getting to see this. Would highly recommend.

Why no shuttle??

By Keith518 |

We made a special 120 mile trip to see Mariposa Grove and the sequoias for the first time. While the giant sequoias were amazing, the trip to see them was agonizing. We didn't know that the 3 mile shuttle would be closed in early May, but it was, so we had to walk the 5+ miles to see the sequoia forest. We set out - in light rain - for the long walk. We took the "trail" through the woods to get there. My wife and I are both in our late 60s and in pretty good condition, but my wife broke down and cried from the effort before we eventually reached the "rest area". It was not a fun experience. We saw Old Grizzly and the Tunnel Tree and then headed back downhill on the paved road. From all indications, the road was perfectly clear in both directions and there was no apparent reason why the shuttle wasn't running. We made it back with soreness in our feet, legs, hips and backs like we haven't felt in years. Was it worth the 4 hour trek? Probably not. Get the shuttle running sooner than later! No excuse this time.

Beautiful view

By shnpan |

This was the best part of Yosemite. You have to park by the gift shop and take a shuttle but it is free. The trails are well marked and they have various distances. If you have a handicap pass you can drive closer to the largest trees and walk from a different parking lot.

Amazing experience

By alanrenwick |

This was a breathtaking walking. What nature has given us here is amazing. Met a great guy on way round. Do not miss out.

Take the Ranger walk

By ERAvan |

You can walk around here by yourself, but if you want some good information and explanations, take the free ranger walk. It was great, and I learned more about the trees, how they grow and how and why they die. Spectacular views of these gorgeous trees.

A must do on your Yosemite list

By Dotty M |

The park has done a phenomenal job in refurbishing this area. New restrooms, better parking, easy shuttle on/off.

I should mention that my brother is disabled and we an accessibility pass at the front entrance for him. This pass allowed us to drive right to some of the areas that are shuttle bus or pedestrians only roads. Areas included Mariposa Grove and Mirror Lake. You still have walk a bit but not more than 1/4 mile, if that.

Ok back to Mariposa Grove. It is a .8 mile walk up a hill to get to the Giants. The Tunnel Tree and the Giant Grizzly. If you hike another 2 miles you will see many more of these giants.
The area is large, and peaceful as you stand under these beautiful creations!

Amazing place! Must visit!

By Leonski10 |

Visited here in March and the road was closed, but was able to hike trails in the snow. Absolutely amazing to look up and be in the presence of those giant sequoias!

Just Spectacular!

By M1809 |

Loved our visit here. The Mariposa Grove is situated just inside the South entrance to Yosemite and was about a 20 minute drive from our base in Oakhurst.
There is a large, free car park at the entrance to the Grove and from there, a free 5 minute bus ride to the Giant Sequoia forest.
These trees are absolutely spectacular and there were plenty of trails and walks for all ages and abilities. Suitable footwear required i.e walking shoes/trainers. I think we paid about $20 for a 7 day park pass when entering the park.
We saw lots of wildlife too including deer, squirrels and chipmunks.
The place was so mesmerising that we just kept walking through the thick forest which also had plenty of huge pine trees. After 20 minutes of walking, we stopped. The smell of the trees was so fresh and there was an eerie silence. No birds, no sound at all. It was like we had entered another world - alone. We had not seen a person for about 15 minutes.
It was a privilege to visit these ancient trees and walk amongst them. Wish we had more time to spend here and I’d like to return one day. An absolutely breathtaking experience.

Fantastic walks.

Well organised bus shuttles to walking areas. Well Marked out trails. Beautiful huge trees. Explanation plaques.

So hard to believe

By Richard J |

Done a nice job with parking and shuttling people to the site, a little disappointed in thier clean up of the woods with chain saw marks and thier burning techniques, mother nature has done it for thousands of years, let her take care of her own

Amazing! Don't miss this part of Yosemite!

By SpicyTaters |

We didn't get to Yosemite until late afternoon on a Saturday, so we didn't think that we'd have time to do much. Luckily we read some reviews that said the Mariposa Grove was great even in the early evening. We got to the Grove about 5pm, got the bus that runs every 10 minutes from the parking lot, and had plenty of time to hike up to the Grizzly Giant and back. It would have been great to make it all the way up to the larger grove, but we were very happy with all of the beautiful sequoias we did get to see.

Definitely take water and a flashlight if you're going to be on the trail at dusk. The hike is pretty easy, but rocky in some places, so you might want to wear some hiking boots.

Impressive trees accessible only by shuttle.

By Dick P |

The giant sequoia trees are very impressive. There are nice walking trails that allow you to see many of the trees. The only access to the grove is by shuttle from a parking lot that fills up early. The buses are standing room only and the drivers really pack folks in. At the actual grove, facilities are very limited (only two single toilets for all the people). The closer trails are easy to walk.

Fantastic Giant Redwoods

By flgo2019 |

One of the must see points at Yosemite NP. These trees are simply fascinating. We took the Grizzly trial and got a wonderful impression on these giants. Definitely recommended!

Grizzly Giant and others

By Natalie F |

We had to just stop and wonder at the sheer size of these trees and how long they are growing here. They are absolutely magnificent and a must see in Yosemite

Amazing and truly beautiful

By segawidow |

The scale of it is breathtaking, take a walk to the very top of the trail, it’s a fair old trek but it’s worth it, check out the photos

LOVELY PLACE

By Jordi B |

A beautiful place throughout its route, we crossed the mountains through this park and the views are formidable, the lakes, the rest and picnic areas, the giant sequels. A very quiet and relaxing place. The Rangers were very kind.

Best place to see sequoias

By B T |

We had done the Tuolumne Grove a couple days earlier and were going to skip this one because it was a little more out-of-the-way for us. We had time on our last day and decided to check it out, and I'm very glad we did. The Mariposa Grove, though WAY more crowded, is a much better display for Sequoias than the Tuolumne. The Grizzly Giant is amazing - pictures cannot do it justice.

During COVID there were no shuttles so we had to hoof it, though some cars were driving all the way up with handicap stickers. We decided to walk the road since we were flying out later that day. It's a steady incline on the way in, but the way down was more pleasant. We saw a bear on the hill above the road on the way in - very cool!

If you want to take the road, park closer to the entrance. Most cars were parked close to the trail so we almost forgot we could take the road. The distances are about the same.

Well worth the visit!

By HoultR |

Such an amazing place to walk around. It wasn’t too busy and the shuttle bus from the carpark made it fairly stress free. We walked around for just over an hour, but there was a number of walks you could chose from.

I've never seen trees like this before!

By Kaffy14 |

Wow! What a wonderful and calming place. Deer wandering through the spaces, woodpeckers, squirrels and birds and the tall, majestic sequoias.

It's Yosemite!

By SteveK28762 |

Even in the rain this is such a nice walk through the huge trees and wonderful countryside. So easy to get to the trail, and then follow the beaten path to the Fallen Monarch, the Bachelor and 3 Graces, and of course the Grizzly Giant... astonishing. The great outdoors at its best.

Amazing

By Kathb0110 |

Visited today, a 2 hour drive to Mariposa village for breakfast, then 30 mins to the Grove. No problem parking at 12 noon. Free shuttle bus and a stroll around the medium route. Plenty of shade in the hot sun which was a big bonus. The Park organisers are so geared up for visitors, it was a real pleasure to see the trees. Def worth the drive

Afternoon hike around the Sequoias

By Norris |

Lovely trail…nice and easy and great to see the majestic Sequoias, including the Grizzly Giant. Trail was well marketed and easy to follow

A truly quiet place

By Jeanne J |

We got to the parking lot by 9:30 on Saturday morning so got a space even though it was a free day at national parks. The free shuttle from the parking lot to the grove wasn’t even full. The trail is easy; we took the loop. Saw sequoias all along the trail but some stood out as much more massive than others. Well labled and good informational signs. Amazing trees!! There were lots of photo ops and others taking pictures but it didn’t seem crowded so we were able to feel that it was us and the trees. By the time we got the shuttle back it was full and so was the parking lot. Restrooms and water at the grove and at the parking lot. Still some patches in mid-April.

Beautiful and fun hike all by ourselves!!!

By tressarudik |

Loved running up to the trees from the parking lot. No one at all on the trail at all! So nice to have a bus to take us back to the parking lot

Impressive

By Jordi B |

A good excursion and a fabulous itinerary. The place is nice and cool when walking inside the forest. The whole route is well marked and does not have a high degree of difficulty. The only problem is parking, it depends on what time, you can't find anywhere to park.

Breath taking

By Becky S |

Be sure to take all trails nd your camera. Dont ne shy in asking others to snap a pic of you all in front of hug trees, itll show how really huge the trees are!

Giants of the Forest

By BT3rd |

Today you have to park and be shuttled into the park. This meant very crowded buses. Once in there is a amble to see the Grisly Giant. We were lucky to also see a hummingbird feeding. From there is is a steep walk deeper into the forest. We went as far as the Faithful Couple.

Wow!

By Mary LaFountain |

Loved the walking path through this grove of trees. Very peaceful and great for photography. Walking path gets a little dusty at times. Would like to see more plaques with information.

Nice but long walk if shuttles not running

By DonLincolnshire |

When we visited the shuttles were not running yet for the season so we had to walk up the access road 2 miles to get to the grove. It's not extremely steep but is uphill getting there, and if you're not in great shape coming back downhill is hard on the shins. Near the end of the access road before reaching the grove you will see a few sequoias on the left. The tree to the left is on a slight slope and has huge roots that look like toes. I thought this tree was more impressive than Grizzly Giant. Overall it was a nice side trip from the valley, but you can skip it if you plan on visiting Sequoia NP. It was also cool to see with snow on the ground. Parts of the boardwalk were totally covered in packed snow

Gorgeous trees

By Archie |

This is such a great introduction to sequoias trees. We took a shuttle from the parking lot. Leave the crowds and head straight to the grizzly giant. You can get all the pics you want. The tunnel tree is here as well. We enjoyed our walk. There is a loop trail that allows you to learn all about these trees. Its hard to get a complete shot.

Not an easy walk

By ExperiencedTravelers |

This is not an easy or short hike. Many people were exhausted and should not have undertaken it in the first place. At a minimum, be sure to have plenty of water.

Huge

By Dave C |

At the south entrance to the Park- if you can't get to the Sequoia Park you can still see these monster trees up close. Free shuttle into the area every 10 min. Nice facilities. Free.

browsing among the big trees

By beth a |

A definite must if visiting Yosemite. Easy walk or can loop on several trails. Take your time and enjoy these marvels!

Lovely part to visit

By Andy D |

Our first port of call in Yosemite and well worth the visit, fairly simple walks amongst the giant trees with some nice rest spots to have lunch.

Worth seeing.

By Donald F |

This is a lovely part of the park. The trees are huge and impressive. You needn’t spend a lot of time here - an hour should let you walk round and see most things. You need to use the shuttle bus as only disabled badge holders can park right at the start of the trail, much of which is wheel chair friendly.

Wow! Don't miss these trees!

By Wilma F |

The drive was scary and twisty along the mountain to this grove, but worth every wince! You park in a lot with a gift shop and restrooms, to catch a very short drive to the grove by shuttles that run about every 10 minutes. Once at the grove you can plainly see the sequoias. The path goes in a huge circle (come to find out). So it doesn't matter which path you take. Plan to get dirty and dusty because its an all dirt path. We chose the path to the left and it seemed longer with NO seats to rest on. It seemed to take forever. There are several sequoias to take pictures of and touch on this path. Once you finally get to the 'Granddad' sequoia, there are seats to rest! All the sequoias in this area are fenced off and you cannot get close. It was downhill all the way thank goodness! If you take the path to the right it will be steep with rustic railing/steps all the way up to 'granddad' and you circle back on the dirt/no seat path back to the bus. Plenty of restrooms at the bus terminal. Please do not get on the bus without your entire party because they will NOT wait for your late members! Again, no service on phones throughout most of Yosemite. Print out your directions before you leave home!

Wow! This is a wonderful place!

By Roaming G |

I had to walk in as due to the snow the shuttle wasn’t operating. It was quite a climb in the snow and ice but well worth it. The trees are spectacular and the new walk way is well done. There are plenty of information signs and areas of walkways so you can get good angles for pictures.

Upper Grove is magical

By PacificNWFamily |

We were happy to ride the shuttle to the Arrival Area. This much better than last year. And the water is turned on at the Arrival Area, so you can refill water bottles if needed.

The wheelchair accessible Big Trees Loop is not a loop. While much of the area has been fixed after the January 2020 windstorm, there is still a huge tree blocking the trail.

After viewing the Grizzly Giant & California Tunnel Tree, we continued up the Mariposa Grove Trail, enjoying the named and unnamed trees along the way. We went all the way to Wawona Point where we picnicked and watched local wildlife including a young Golden Eagle. Then we walked down to the Upper Grove for the Guardians Loop Trail. This is my favorite part of Mariposa Grove. I think it’s worth the effort, if folks feel they can hike that distance.

We headed down some unnamed trails past the Clothespin Tree and on to the Perimeter Trail & the end of the Grizzly Giant Loop.

Shuttles appeared to be running every 5 to 15 minutes. We had the 15 minute wait.

Big trees

By Andylad17 |

I did some research about visiting but it was out of date as when we got there I was expecting a small tram to take us to see the sights. Unfortunately this has now no longer running so we had a half a mile hike. It was quite easy slightly uphill but easily managed.

Sequoia 'Lite' for those with just one chance to see them

By Neal S |

The Mariposa Grove offers those with limited time the opportunity to see honest-to-gosh sequoias with educational materials nearby. Sequoia National Park offers the 'real deal' but is a hundred miles further on. Call this the 'Sequoia Lite' experience.

one of the best experiences of my life.

By VelvetSteamroller |

i am so very glad we got to experience this. my wife and I took our oldest here for her graduation present and it was such a great experience. we came july 2020 during the coronavirus upheaval and couldn't get a day entry pass so we took the YARTS bus into the park and it dropped us of right at the grove parking lot, which is literally right next to the park entrance. we got there as early as the YARTS bus could get us there, so we arrived at the mariposa grove parking area/bus stop at 830am. since they aren't running the park shuttles we walked the trail from the parking area to the grove. there was barely anyone else around, only maybe 10-20 cars in the parking lot. we are very active people so the hike to the grove on the trail wasn't difficult and took us about 45 minutes to cover the 2 miles. once we got to the grove (I want you to listen carefully to me here), it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. there was basically no one there. i counted 11 other people the entire time we were walking around the grove. it felt like we had it to ourselves and i felt so honored to have gotten that experience. i have never had that feeling in nature before. the trees are absolute giants and it was so cool to see them. we sat for 15 minutes on the benches at/under the grizzly giant and just absorbed how large and awesome it is and didn't see another person the whole time we sat there. we walked the rest of the Grizzly Giant Loop Trail and it was just as excellent as anyone could ever ask for. we didn't rush ourselves and we spent a comfortable amount of time in the grove and enjoyed ourselves there. we made it back to the grove parking area to catch the YARTS bus back out of the parking area about 1230 or so. since we didn't know how long it would take us to get to the grove, we were hiking with a good bit of hustle, but were able to take our time in the grove and on the hike back to the parking area. awesome experience, highly recommend. if you decided to take the trail from the parking area to the grove, your shoes and lower legs are going to be absolutely covered in dust. my wife and daughter used the time before the bus came one we got back to the parking area to wash their legs. being the caveman that i am i chose to just stew in my grime.

Large trees

By TracyGuichard |

I love how they are trying to save the trees. Took over an hour to get here. Plan on a 5 hour round trip from the Valley. Easy walking around the groove.

Just go you won't be disappointed

By tornillo2015 |

This is on the southern end of park and recently reopened after being closed for some time. The grove is spectacular and very enjoyable trails to walk and observe most of the giants in this area. Must take a shuttle to get there from plaza parking but they run often and wait to get one is minimal.

You need to go here to see Sequioas

By martin penney |

We stopped off an our road trip over to the Sierra Nevada. It was the perfect place to visit to see the best trees in the area. Do not miss it

Saved this for the last day

By kentuckyrain |

Seeing giant sequoias has been on my bucket list before I knew what a bucket list was... Coming to Yosemite for a week this summer I knew I'd finally get to see some big trees but thought we'd have to go to Kings Canyon or elsewhere. Once at the gate we were eager to get to our lodging in the Valley so they promised me we'd go to the Mariposa Grove on the way out as we headed back to Fresno to fly home. I admired many lovely trees all week. Then a week later we stopped at Mariposa Grove around 2 pm, the lot was not crowded; I was worried we'd run out of daylight. Lovely clean restrooms! Luckily we jumped on the first shuttle that pulled up. There seems to be choices of how to walk up to get to the Grizzly Giant. My son and I didn't pay much attention. tired of reading I guess. We went to the right. ?? Well, after a week of serious hiking at my age, this trail was a bit tough. Not supposed to be, but whoa, it was getting to me, but I WAS GOING TO SEE THESE TREES. it was worth it. Deep afternoon light, cool breezes, very few people. All quiet. Saw the 3 graces/bachelor and the Grizzly Giant. Wow. I am so happy we made this hike and stop on the way out on the end of our trip. My son knew it made me happy. Be sure to watch for the BIG tree the bus driver points out to you on the ride back. WOW.

Majestic

By Angiefl |

Giant sequoias can be seen here and walking among such giants gives you some perspective. They have been there for hundreds of years and some for thousands. I really enjoyed taking the time to see these beautiful giants.

So peaceful, we did not want to leave

By Westea |

There is something about walking among giants that is so calming and utterly awe- inspiring that all languages become one, all visitors become instant friends, whether or not we know each others' names or ever see each other again. We were in this place experiencing this immense fullfillment of man's protection of nature. this man thought he was dying and stood in front of these trees and said, NO! not here. to the loggers and lived into his 90s caring for the gentle giants.
"Thank you" and "majestic" are such small words to describe the huge, utterly in-expressible feelings - tears come to my eyes just trying to find words that will never convey the true experience. just go.

answers to the questions below: take more time if you want to hike. free after you pay park admission. take the shuttle up into the grove where the trails begin.

Love the Sequoias

By Cheryl D |

This is such a treasure. We loved hiking among the beautiful trees. The area was refurbished last year and the walkway is wonderful. Make sure to see the Grizzly Giant!

Great experience

By moimeme |

I was willing to go to these place for a while and planning the trip very carefully because I wanted to do it with my (3.9 and 0.2 years old) kids. Here are the things that you need to know before doing the hike:

- The shuttle service is amazingly fast
- restrooms are clean and kid friendly at the parking lot
- Take water with you or get it on the grove arrival area, where the shuttle leaves you
- Do not take any kind of stroller, nothing with wheels
- You won’t be able to touch the Grizzly Giant. It is surrounded by a wooden fence.
- You will probably have to wait in line to take pictures at the Tunnel Tree.

I was able to hike all over to the California Tunnel Tree and return doing the Grizzly Giant loop trail which is a 2 miles todo hike. I had an 3 years old in hand and a 2 months old baby in a carrier. I’m glad to have had my lovely cousin with me too.

Unforgettable experience.

Beautiful Sequoia Grove

By D. Aaronson |

As of 2021 the road up to the grove is closed, so it's an extra 4 miles (2 each way) to see the grove. Don't let this discourage you though, the advantage is that it is far less crowded than it normally would be. Take some extra water, allow a couple more hours and enjoy the trip.

Hiking through the Giant Sequoias of trees with our family.

By cwfaerber |

Yosemite is absolutely beautiful. We had spent four days at Bass Lake so when driving to the Valley to spend another four days, we passed right by the Mariposa Grove. The parking is close to the main road. All visitors need to park their car and take a shuttle to the park. There are great restrooms at the beginning of the trails. If you need a wheelchair, this wouldn't be the hike for you. Most of the trail that we took was pretty level. The beginning of the trail they have wood planks. Later you are on a dirt trail. The beauty of the grove makes you want to come back again and again. They had reconstructed parking, restrooms, and trails about three years ago so it was different from when we had visited years ago. This was at least our fourth visit. If you had to choose between Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove, I would choose to do the valley. However, we did all three, Yosemite Valley, Glacier Point, and Mariposa Grove. My family loves Yosemite as they grew up camping here many summers. We had our children, their spouses, and grandchildren on this trip.

Topping on the cake

By BigH Z |

While we were in Yosemite, since we did not have a car, we paid for the Grand Tour. First we traveled to Mariposa Sequoia Redwoods. there It was 2 mile round trip hike. Bill was our tour guide and he was great in explaining all that he pointed out. It is worth the trip if you can't see the Redwoods. These Sequoia trees were huge and tall. One tree you can walk right through it. You will pass by Bachelor and the three Graces, Grizzly giant, and the Hole in tree. Unique beauty in Mariposa Grove.

Amazing!! Must see!

By boymomdfw |

We did the 2+ mile hike into the forest. There are no busses yet but if you take the road up it's a smooth and paved walk up. There are several trails blocked by fallen trees. We were glad to see these beautiful trees!

Be prepared to hike 2 miles one way to get there.

By Jane a |

I guess due to COVID-19, the ability to get close to the grove is hiking only unless you have a handicapped placard, in which case you can drive right up and park. So, be prepared to hike in 2 miles, mostly uphill to get to the tree grove, plus more hiking in the grove to see the main tree attractions. The rangers were not going to budge on this arrangement. There is no shuttle. I didn’t hike further into the grove after the 2 mile hike to get a look at the trees because I already had blisters from previous hikes but my husband did and he was only mildly impressed as we’d seen similar trees traveling around Yosemite.
I highly recommend going to Glacier Point in addition to Yosemite valley. Fantastic!

Over-Rated

By Clint S |

Over-rated. This is truly the best way to describe this part of the park. Way over-crowded. There are other trails with the same thing that are less crowded.

Awesome trees and nice hikes too

By Sara Goldstein |

The grizzly giant is a monster of a tree but all the trees are pretty cool. We did the much shorter grizzly giant group and it was awesome, there were only tourists at the very beginning and end but on the trial we saw almost no one. Great for wild life watching!

A fun change of pace from Yosemite

By laurajean316 |

After a couple of days of long and strenuous hikes in Yosemite, it was nice to have a more mild and mostly flat hike amongst the sequoias. As others have mentioned- this will pale in comparison to Sequoia National Park. But that's ok- this is still fun and beautiful. It is perfect for all ages and there is a shuttle you can take right to the entrance. There is also a wheelchair accessible trail which is nice and sturdy for those who need it. We opted to walk the trail instead of the shuttle for more miles so it's up to you. We brought sandwiches and ate our lunch under the trees. It was peaceful and perfect. You will notice lots of burnt areas from the fires back in '21 or '22 I believe. But the forest has a magnificent way of healing itself and it was nice to see lots of new growth all around.

Sad, closures, destruction and fire damage everywhere

By Dan |

This is supposed to be a national treasure, but it was so sad and disappointing. There are probably people who came here for a once in a lifetime trip only to see destruction and closures, no shuttle buses, forced to hike two miles to upper parking lot where access is prohibited by car (I already said no shuttles) half the grove is closed off, with heavy equipment beeping. There are felled trees everywhere, only one trail is open, there is forest fire damage everywhere. luckily there were no crowds otherwise the tunnel tree and great grizzly, the only trees that were actually accessible would have been overrun. Came on a tuesday morning. Off my bucket list, never to return, I don't see the national parks getting better.

Wind storm disaster has closed the shorter of the loops

By messier27 |

First the bad- it's supposed to be a short, easy area of hikes. Unfortunately, it requires a 2 mile hike just to get to the Grove. This can mean a lot to those of us that aren't able to do alot of extended hikes for various hikes. Along with that, a huge disaster destroyed a large number of the sequoia in the Grove and as a result the shorter of the hikes was closed for damage. Don't misunderstand me, the park service always has my respect in all things they do. They obviously had to close the grove. It's just disappointing after the hike just to get there. The grizzly giant hike is listed as easy and it would be if there wasn't 4 additional miles added to it but should be updated to moderate. With all that, the sequoias are amazing and it was worth it. I even saw a Rubber Boa on the trail which was a first for me

Evening is a great time to visit.

We visited in the evening and there were no crowds. Deer came out. The trees are magnificent. Pretty accessible for people with disabilities. All ages will appreciate this place.

Renovations are wonderful!

By MED1500 |

What a great job they did, first class on everything. You park and take a shuttle to the Mariposa Grove. Walk is a little up hill but doable for most. Go in Spring or Fall to avoid the summer crowds.

Satisfactory Trail

By 재복 이 |

When you go up the shuttle and walk the trail, people line up and take pictures where they meet. It is a representative place to visit and take great photos.

Simply exquisite

By bolderclimber |

The place is breathtaking. Enough said!

Nature.
Beauty.
Pleasure.
Wildlife.

It is there in abundance. An amazing and historic experience.

A must if you are in Yosemite

Worth a visit

By Cathy B |

Along drive but not as crowded as other areas. Had a lovely stroll along the grizzly loop, loved the tree you can walk under. I would recommend visiting here after glacier point which is way more crowded.

Yes, very large.

By tim1999 |

Great day in the Grove. Trees were exactly what we expected. Nice places to walk and two key trees you need to visit (you can't miss them).

Excellent relaxing hike

By Oopsy |

We weren’t sure how we would get to the trailhead, but they had a climate controlled shuttle that actually does arrive every 10 minutes. The have an awesome gift shop. The hike to the Giant Grizzly and the California Tunnel tree was moderately easy. I’m out of shape and was able to manage it easily. Don’t be in a hurry so you can go at a pace that suits you.

Where you find the giant sequoias of Yosemite National Park

By Brad 🇭🇰 |

The Mariposa Grove was reopened in the summer of 2018 after several years of restoration works in this area of Yosemite National park. You can now visit the grove, spending time around the giant sequoias that live here. You can easily spend a few hours, a full day or more taking in the trails of the Mariposa Grove.

A new system of transportation is now in place whereby you park at the Mariposa Grove Welcome Plaza 2 miles away from the Grove. Free shuttle service is available, departing every 10 minutes and taking visitors to the Arrival Area at the Lower Grove. From here you can begin hikes that take the Lower and Upper Groves of Mariposa.

During our recent visit in late April, we were able to join a Ranger walk that lasted around 1 hour. The ranger made 8-9 stops along the first stretch of the Grizzly Giant and Lower Mariposa Trails, providing in depth information about the sequoias, the grove and the Yosemite National Park in general. This was highly educational and something we'd really look forward to participating in again.

After the Ranger talk and walk continued along the Grizzly Giant trail which loops back to the Arrival Area. From here there are other short loop hikes you can take or you can wait to board the free shuttle back to the Welcome Plaza where you vehicle is parked.

Note: Visit the Yosemite National Park website for information about the various easy and challenging hikes in the Mariposa Grove as well as times and frequency of the Mariposa shuttle service.

SEQUOIAS!

By Jennifer K |

If you need to see Sequoias and aren't able to get to Sequoia NP, visit Mariposa Grove. It was a nice little hike, but we've been to Sequoia NP so we were a little disappointed.... but Sequoias are beautiful wherever you are!

Different side of Yosemite!

By bobbyza |

Mariposa Grove, a large area made up of many giant sequioas is less visited due to its extreme SW corner of Yosemite. Due to Covid, the 1 mile uphill shuttle was NOT running so my wife and I added 2 miles to our hike. Trail from the trailhead is only slightly moderate uphill and not very challenging. But the visit to the Grizzly Giant , 2700 years old, was quite exciting and in our opinion well worth it!

Big Beautiful Trees

By Kenneth L |

We had stopped years earlier but when it started raining, my wife turned back. That time we parked near the trees, this time we parked in a remote lot and took a shuttle. We walked the trail as far as a paved road which may be the one we took the previous time. This road is only open when the shuttle isn't running. From what I could tell, we saw only a fraction of the entire Grove, so allow lots of time.

I think this is the only grove of Sequoia trees in Yosemite National Park. Sequoia trees are the most massive and among the most long lived living things on Earth. We didn't see many trees, but I think we would have had we allowed more time and followed more of the trails. The trail is up hill, but not difficult. We also saw deer.

Beautiful.

By ClanClark |

Everything you hope it’ll be and so much more. Get there at opening and you have the place to yourself. Amazing tees and some 100 plus year old graffiti 😀

Worth the stop to see these giants

By Kim B |

Once in the park you have to park and take a shuttle to the pathway. Grizzly is the largest tree in the park, and it is only about a mile in. The entire place is a board walk so you are not able to actually touch any trees. You are able to get pictures of them, but not as close as i would have liked. If you have never seen a tree like this before - make the stop. It is a nice drive on it's own as well.

2 adults, 2 young kids and a stroller (buggy)

By carlos |

Went today for a couple of hours with a five year old, a two year old and a standard stroller (buggy for us brits)

Great place. We got to the car park just before 8am and very few people around. Its about a 30 min drive from oakhurst and is windy roads throughout. Had a great feel to the place and the trees are awesome to be around. The only restroom (toilet) is by the car park.

It is doable with a stroller. There are a few parts that will mean you have to lift the buggy over a small stream, or a bit of wet mud and the stroller will get dirty. But if you are fit and there's two adults then totally doable.

Obviously this would be more of a secondary activity after lower yosemite falls and mirror lake (which we did with a stroller) but still awesome.

Quite impressive

By Susan D |

It is such a peaceful amazing place. Best place to see sequoias is at Sequoia National Park further south.

Fun time in the woods

By scrappysquirrel |

We enjoyed our visit to see the giant sequoias. We especially liked the Fallen Monarch, Grizzly Giant and California Tunnel Tree. The areas around these trees were a bit more crowded than other areas in Yosemite.

Still Big Trees To See

By Yesandnomads |

Question: what happens after hundreds of thousands of people tramp around big trees?

You can see for yourself. Much has changed since our 1985 visit. Drought, fire, heavy traffic. Still, now that the feds have built rails and walks to keep visitors from finishing off the forest, maybe the trees have a chance.

Nice - but id view sequoias in Kings of Sequois

By Sonja B |

The day before we had been to Sequoia itself. This was good but Yosemite is full of other attractions. Id keep sequoias for kings canyon and Sequoia and Yosemite for the mountains:-)

Don't miss!

By Susan S |

These trees are simply amazing and should not be missed. Go in the early morning or late afternoon .Use the free shuttle and take your time on the short easy trail. Magical!!

Just Wow!

By Philippa J |

No words can describe the majestic beauty of these trees and the countryside between S.F. And arriving in Yosemite NP.
There are several trails you can walk after the bus drops you off, we chose the 3 miles and ever the 14yr old was blown away and still says its one of his favorite parts of the holiday!!!!!

Good off day walk

By Julie |

Definitely giant sequoias and beautiful too. It was a good off day visit for us as we did a painful long hike the day before. Walk around and enjoy the sequoias.

Know before you go....

By Dr Jeff |

6.1 mile round trip. 3 hours from parking lot. It was entertaining to see so many people realize they should have hit the gym before their vacation. Lots of sore backs and sweating going on. Other than that, if you are fit....this place is awesome.

Famous Grove of Giant Sequoias

By Edward |

The Mariposa Grove is the main area to see Giant Sequoias (sequoiadendron giganteum) in Yosemite National Park. These are among the most massive trees in the world, and one of the tallest, but although more massive than the Coast Redwoods of the northern California Coastal region (sequoia sempervirens), they are not as tall. People often refer to these also as "redwoods" but do not confuse these with the taller, more slender Coast Redwoods. They are entirely different trees, they look entirely different, and they grow in entirely different parts of the state.

This grove is near Wawona at the southern end of the national park, and is not in, or even near, Yosemite Valley, which is the most famous part of the park.

The grove has some good walking trails, mostly easy and accessed from a car park and visitor centre, although one may need to walk along the road from the car park to get the grove trail, unless shuttles are operating.

The grove has some significant giant sequoias, most famous being the Grizzly Giant, plus it has a sequoia tunnel tree. Unlike the forests of the Coast Redwoods, which are humid and can be dense forests with innumerable tall redwoods, and which can be temperate rainforests, these trees are relatively few in number and tend to stand in less dense forests with many other trees. The area suffered some fire damage in 2022 and some of the trees over time have been lost. The grove as a whole is very nice and certainly worth a look, but a more impressive grove, with bigger trees, is in Sequoia National Park further to the south.

Great Hike Not Too Strenuous

By brienoc |

After hiking UP Yosemite Falls, I needed a day to just stretch my SORE legs. This is a great hiking area among some of the most beautiful trees in the world.

Beautiful trees

By John O |

Nice place to visit but I would take the shuttle and not do the hike. The hike is easy but time consuming.

So Happy This Is Open Again - So Sad There Is No More Tram

By VtaTraveler |

This was our first trip to the grove since they closed it for refurbishment several years ago. They have totally made it inaccessible for those with mobility issues. Whereas in the past, you could take a tram ride and see all the wonderful trees, now you are limited to whatever you can view from the main parking lot or the tiny parking area near the Grizzly Giant. If you can't walk a fair distance, forget it. What a travesty!! The only reason I am not giving it fewer stars is because the trees are magnificent. This truly is a wonderful place to visit, but I just wish they had not disregarded the needs of people who can't walk the trail to see all of the trees. Whatever happened to the ADA? Yes, with a handicap placard, you are able to drive a little way on the former tram road, but no narration, no signage on which trees are which. Totally disappointing to one who has visited these trees almost every year for the past 40 years until they closed it down.

Well worth a visit

By Gena R |

These trees are enormous and the park is stunning. There is information on a lot of the trees and various areas around the grove. Easy trails to walk and disable pathways.

Grizzly giant and updates

By Katy C |

Visiting in the spring, we were required to park at the visitor center and take the shuttle in, which was timely and not overly full in the mid morning. The entrance and hike within the grove has been completely redone since we visited four years ago, and while it does increase access, it takes from the natural beauty of the area with the addition of a large walkway. The sequoias are still lovely, but probably better viewed in other parks where you can walk among them rather than on a deck beside them.

Might not be "worth it" in 2021

By PacificNWFamily |

Mariposa Grove is one of my favorite places in Yosemite. Specifically, the Upper Grove is fabulous.

However, without a shuttle, I do not think that visiting Mariposa Grove this summer is worth the effort for most visitors. Tuolumne Grove has fewer trees but a much shorter hike.

This year, a visit to Mariposa Grove starts with a 2 mile walk uphill on the road (speeding cars) or on the dusty Washburn Trail to access the Mariposa Grove Arrival Area. Even though we started early in the morning, it was already hot on the trail.

We continued to the Grizzly Giant and the California Tunnel Tree. If we had turned around at this point and walked back down to our car, that would have been about 5 1/2 miles. But we continued up.

We saw many trees down, some completely blocking trail access. The January Mono Wind Event was devastating. We chose routes that were not blocked and continued up to Wawona Point. The Wawona Meadow and the (closed) Wawona Golf Course were visible in the distance as this was a clear day.

Our descent included the lovely Upper Grove. The Guardian Loop Trail is well done; it's hard to tell that it's an old road. The Telescope Tree is so much shorter after the winter storms.

We continued down to our car via the road. Drivers with a disabled placard are also able to use this road, and almost all of them were going much faster than the speed limit. Other walkers routinely called out "CAR" in warning. I don't think this was a safe situation for walkers, and I certainly would not take small children on this road.

Our day was about 12 miles. We filled our water bottles at the Mariposa Grove Welcome Plaza before and after our hike.

Awesome! Be prepared...

By nickib983 |

These trees are well-worth the hike it takes to see them all. I was here years ago, and the experience is 1000% improved since the renovation. It is beautiful, authentic, awe-inspiring. Make sure to bring your walking shoes and water. My 12yo daughter gave up and missed the best parts. My toddler was a trooper and hiked much of it herself. There is so much history here. Pictures don’t do the experience justice.

Awe inspiring!

By Rebecca M |

Done a brilliant job on the Grove, tracks are great with choices to suit everyone and shuttle bus system works really well! Few picnic tables would be nice but minor issue!

Giant Sequoias

By madNY |

The Mariposa Grove is immediately after you enter Yosemite via the southern entrance. You park in the lot and then catch the shuttle that runs frequently down to the grove. If you have a handicap sticker you can drive your car yourself. But the shuttle was easy. The Giant Sequoias are magnificent. The Grizzly Giant is about 2800 years old and there is a tunnel tree you can walk through. Wonderful that it has been saved. I would definitely plan to take at least one of the small hikes in the area to really see the trees.

Crazy Nature

By Chanté |

My friend and I hiked up to "The Giant", and the hiking trail is so nice! Ans everything is just so beautiful! "The Giant" is bigger than I expected - the side branches look like big trees!!!

I'd definitely recommend!

Amazing!

By Mark Vetock |

A must see...take the short loop to see Grizzly Giant and all the beautiful trees. We saw several mule deers along the loop. The trees are ABSOLUTELY gorgeous!

Not to be missed!

By Amy L |

We stayed near the south entrance to Yosemite so this was a convenient stop for us, but it should not be missed by those staying in the Valley. Newly updated trails, and facilities, this was a nice stop. Lots of options for trail lengths, and beautiful to see this grove of Giant Sequoia's protected. We did the grizzly loop and it took us about an hour.

Go to Wawona point if you can

By Travelpurple |

I’m sure we will feel it tomorrow but was so worth the long hike up. Amazing view and the groves of Redwoods are spectacular. Rated as “strenuous” and took us about 5 hours with some stops for snacks. They have done a very nice job with the renovation of the parking and entrance area.

Beautiful trees and nice hike

By Karim Maarouf |

I hiked down to the grove. It was about 20 minutes to hike down and 40 to come back up. The hike down is of course much easier. The trees were very impressive Also spotted a deer on the way down. Nice views and good photo-ops.

Giant sequoias are worth the effort

By Suzanne |

There is apparently one grove of Giant Sequoias in Yosemite and this is it. Yes, it is a 2 mile hike each way. We were rerouted here due to the fires in Sequoia which would have been much easier access to the sequoia trees so I was fussing as I walked this trail, believe me. With that said, the walk was beautiful along the trail and once there, the trees are magnificent, making it well worth it. A couple told us their plan to walk back on the actual road which was genius. It was still 2 miles but much less dusty and rough. It seemed to make it easier to take. This stop was a great way to start in the park if you enter the south entrance, it is immediately as you enter. Take plenty of water and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Excellent!

Amazing walk to the trees

By Jonathan S |

The whole site has just been revamped. Cars now park outside of the grove and there is a free shuttle bus into the grove itself.

There are walls for all abilities with helpful boards describing the key trees and sites.

There are only two toilets for both male and female at the grove itself so best to use the restroom at the main car park to avoid the queues.

Wonderful way to get back to nature

By opticook |

If you are looking for peace and quiet after the being in the crowds of Yosemite Vallley, this is the place to spend the afternoon. Don't go too early and you will have the forest almost to yourself.

Take the hike from the visitor center

By Lisaloo616 |

Instead of taking the bus up the the Mariposa Grove area, hike over. It’s about 2 miles but it’s a lovely hike with an opportunity for some great photo shots. When you get to the grove area the trees are spectacular to see. Incredible views of nature at its finest. Enjoy your time there

nice

By Bentelrab |

I went as a part of the grand tour with no guide and the hike was too long and hard to grizzly giant.
I went to calveras big tree at the same trip and it was much more impressive and enjoyable.

Nice walk among ancient trees

By AndyB5542 |

The Mariposa grove is a must see in Yosemite. It’s quite a way from the Yosemite valley, but it’s worth the drive. You park by the welcome center and take a shuttle to the grove. The shuttle runs every 20 mins.

The trees are something else. It’s very humbling to see them. There are a few trails that you can do. But you can see most of the popular trees within a mile walk or so.

Good family spot, but underwhelming for me

By Elle P |

Yes, magnificent and old and tall trees. But if you’ve seen them elsewhere (sequoia, Muir Woods, etc) then I would say you can skip this stop if you’re short on time.

When you arrive you park in a big lot and have to get on a free shuttle that comes every 10-15 min. I waited 15-20 min in a line. There are nice bathrooms here. The drive was only 2 miles.

I did the Grizzly loop which took me about half the time the sign said. (Hour ish with photos) I was alone and hike often. It was an easy hike for me. I saw some families struggling a bit!

If you enter (or are exiting) using the south entrance, you may as well stop by as these are immediately after you enter. It’s about an hour drive from here to the valley or to stops on glacier point road.

Not worth the effort

By Jill S |

Visited in May 2021; so much damage from the storm in January, trees were down everywhere and it really took away from the beauty of the grove. The biggest thing though was that there are NO SHUTTLES running (due to COVID), so you have to hike UPHILL 2 miles (via road or through the forest) to get to the entrance to the grove, then another 3/4 mile to the first tree (Grizzly Giant). It was a cool tree, but not worth the hike (time and effort) and seeing all the devastation was a real downer. (My husband and I are in our 40's, physically fit.) Check out Sequoia National Park, Kings Canyon, or Big Trees State Park instead (Been to Big Trees, it is amazing). Overall, my opinion is that the grove should be closed until they can clean it up and the shuttles can run again. If you are going to visit it, plan to spend a lot of time to allow for the added hike, in and out.

Good tour

By Deb T |

Beautiful location, informative driver.
Great tour for being able to do a few bits of many things in a short period of time.

Natural Beauty that shouldn't be Missed

By Kim C |

A beautiful area with so much beauty. If you venture beyond the Grisly Giant you have the paths to yourself. So many majestic giants along the paths.

This part of the park was amazing, but I disproportionately spent too much time here.

By TennisStar602 |

I hiked about two (2) miles around various mariposa trees. The elevation was decent and the scenery was phenomenal. I saw huge standing mariposa, fallen mariposas, and a mariposa that I could actually walk through. A person must take a shuttle bus to this site, and the buses come and go frequently.

Amazing; beautiful trees

By JT1952 |

This is a must see in Yosemite. Some of the trees are over 1000 years old. It is a lovely hike through the forest. We did the hike at the beginning and end our stay in Yosemite. It is such a peaceful, restful place.

Breathtaking

By Rachel J |

The giant sequoia trees NEVER get old. Take the road to the parking lot. There is a shuttle bus up to the tree loop. If you go early there are a lot less people to deal with. The trees are amazing.

Mariposa Grove - Yosemite

By Steve |

Since they have renovated and upgraded the area it's quite a place to visit! I visited in June and the grove is located 1hr south of Yosemite valley on hwy 41. After parking in a fairly large lot, you can either go to the store or jump on one of the buses that will drive ( at no cost, since it's still in Yosemite) you to Mariposa Grove. Once there you can wander at your own speed and take the various wide circuitous paths around the area. The trees are magnificent and are truly big! Some of their branches as bid as a normal tree! If you want to see big Sequoias without the crowds this is the park in my opinion. Buses were full but available.

Majestic trees in a nice forest

By Katja B |

It is impressing to see these old and majestic trees. The site has several nice trails that suits all levels. The best is to take one of the longer trails with less people. For example the Mariposa Grove Trail up to Wawona. We were surprised over the amount of people not wearing mask on the trail and thought that was a bit dis-respectful.

Amazing to see

By alic1988 |

Amazing to see these beautiful trees.
Lots of history and well looked after.
Quite a drive to get to, but free shuttle bus there.
Be warned that the buses stop collecting from 8pm.

Beautiful park within the Yosemite Natl Park

By greenham01 |

Been a long while since I last visited this grove, but just as beautiful and wonderful as when I first visited! The renovation was nicely done, there are nice walkways that protects the trees from us humans - be it just trampling all over the place or leaving our scratch marks on the trees. The giants are to be seen to be appreciated - we came in late Dec, just before the storms - not very many people around and it was serene and peaceful.

Bit of a trek for some, but should be ok for most people, to get to the interesting trees. Just take it slow, enjoy nature, look out for deers. What would have been nice is if the signs were a bit more frequent to indicate how close we are to the next interesting tree/grove. I saw some folks turning around just before getting to their destinations. I guess the adage of "keep going unless told otherwise" holds here - the signs are adequate for those in the know, for the first timers, maybe a tad sparse?

Anyway, enjoy the trees - they are a beauty and wonder to behold!

A Must See

By FellowTraveler33 |

New visitor center, parking and frequent and short air conditioned shuttle buses (nice) are well planned and convenient. Trees are amazing and NPS Rangers are informative. Short hikes with easy changes in elevation are accessible and worth the time while longer steeper hikes are here as well.

mariposa grove

By Balasubramanian R |

Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias is located in the southern part of Yosemite National Park and one of the tourist attraction. It is the largest grove of giant sequoias. Free shuttle from Mariposa grove welcome entrance.

New and informative

By SoCalAdventureSeeker |

Yosemite has done a beautiful job updating this area of the park. There is plenty of parking, and buses to take you to the grove. The various walking paths are well marked and offer lots of information on the trees and area. Because I went to Sequoia National Park prior to Yosemite. I was underwhelmed by the grove itself, but none the less it should be on your list to see at least once when visiting Yosemite. Kudos to Yosemite for the new facility and the beautiful new facility.

Walk through a tree!

By MsBeth |

These trees are as old as 2000 years! This was a good first day for us to acclimate ourself to the altitude. Easy hike
There is a tram that takes you to the trail head and hikes for every level.

Worth the hike

By nhfn |

The shortest route to see the giant sequoia and Tunnel tree is 6 miles round-trip. 2 miles through the forest to get there which was lovely and partially shaded with the possibility of seeing wildlife like deer, then about 2 miles in the Sequoia Grove, then 2 miles back. There are water fountains at the Sequoia Grove entrance before the 2 mile loop. We have a nine-year-old and 11-year-old and although they were really big troopers, it was a bit hard for the nine-year-old as she got a little tired and cranky towards the end.

Fabulous experience

By Dennis B |

Seeing these giant trees is an awesome experience and I have memories that I’ll cherish. Walking through the tunnel tree and then hugging this giant was mind blowing. The hike is easy and well worth the effort.

Super large trees

By Martin D |

That place is has been a unique experience, those trees are really big... it's awesome to be under those trees and enjoy the view below... the USA has it all!

Day trip to the big trees

By Cathy O |

So this was our first trip back to the big trees since it was redone. Before that we come up every four years or so. Really nice path ways for almost up to the grizzly giant, be aware that there are some stone steps. There are no more trams so my mother could not make the climb up to see anything which was a bummer. I did recognize some of the old paths are still there. The trees are always worth it, they are amazing.

Just reopened, an amazing peaceful walk among the giants

By michael j |

We were there just after it had reopened. All the trails refurbished, new signage and rails. A great setting with absolutely amazing giants and a variety of foliage. The Grizzly was incredible (bigger than the statue of Liberty). Some of the oldest trees in the world. But the best part are the groomed trails. Makes for a wonderful casual hike and serene setting. Don't miss if you're there.

Big Trees

By Bill B |

If you have been to Sequoia National Park, this isn't near as impressive. With that being said, we came here first and were stunned looking at these incredible trees. The Park Service makes it easy with the shuttle service to the tree area from the parking lot. The walk is strenuous if you are out of shape. But even then, they are awesome to see.

Worth the drive down

By bobbief747 |

If you came in from one of the northern entrances this is definitely worth the drive down to see! These trees are amazing! They only exist in a few places in California and unlike the Coastal Redwoods are very difficult to access. We only did a short 2 mile round trip hike to see one of the oldest Seqouas as the weather was not in our favor. If you have the time and weather permitting the longer hike to a bigger grove would be awesome!

Not as awesome as the Redwoods🙁

By Elsa C. L. |

I had been to the Redwoods and saw how massive Redwoods’ trunks are. Three of us spread our arms sideways with our fingers touching and our entire width was not as wide as that of a Redwood tree.

In the Redwoods, our car was able to drive through one tree. In comparison, the Sequioa’s width is wide enough only for a family of 4-5 to fit in the frame of the tree’s opening.

The Sequioas in Yosemite are not as grand.

DREAM COME TRUE!!

By downeyfresh07 |

I've wanted to see a giant sequoia ever since I was in elementary school, so to stand in this forest 27 years later, seeing these massive trees was so exciting. Since we came in October, the weather was cooler and less crowds. It did get a little noisier when a school group with young kids came in, but that was toward the end of our time there. Other than that, it was very quiet!

No Cowboy hat

By CavemanHHH |

Ok never wear a cowboy hat to Yosemite period. I learned my lesson while looking at the trees, because I was always taking it off to look up. Ended up carrying it most of the time. The walks through these trees are very tranquil. Make the effort to go to the south side to see this lovely grove.

I like Big Trees

By Shannon N |

We visited Mariposa Grove mid-November. We took the shuttle and walked on the wooden path. The path must be relatively new, but it's nice because elderly and wheelchairs can access it. There are trails beyond that, one of which we took, a "strenuous" hike, Mariposa Grove Trail up to the Perimeter Trail. It was mostly fire road, an upward grade, we huffed and puffed a little but it was worth it. About six miles round trip, barely saw a sole, and ate our lunch under a big Sequoia. It was magnificent!

Inspiring trees

By 2BEis2SKI |

A little off the beaten track vs. some of the other Yosemite attractions but well worth the trip.

Easy walk to see the main attractions but we had to wait quite a while for the bus on the trip up and back. That lone probably consumed an hour of our visit.

Definitely recommend though.

A beautiful restoration of this important area

By BruinDan |

The National Park Service recently completed a three-year restoration of the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias in Yosemite National Park. Having visited the Mariposa Grove several times prior to the restoration, I was anxious to see the changes. I was delighted to see that they had done a beautiful job!

Among the changes made were moving the parking lot away from the sequoias to an area near the Park’s south entrance, removing pavement from the roadways to improve the natural flow of water, adding an accessible trail in the lower grove, and building a new arrival plaza at the entrance to the Grove that includes a parking shuttle stop, book store and rest rooms.

We noticed that the trails were much better defined and marked. We also liked the raised boardwalk section (which will hopefully lead to restoration of natural wetlands) and the small fence that keeps visitors a respectable distance from the sequoias and discourages the creation of unofficial (or “social”) trails. Having to take a shuttle bus from the parking area was not overly inconvenient. The presence of actual rest rooms (there were only vault toilets at the Grove in the past) was especially appreciated.

Because of its distance from Yosemite Valley, many Park visitors don’t make to the Mariposa Grove. That is a shame, because these ancient sequoias are truly an impressive and memorable sight. In particular, if you’re coming in through the south entrance (Highway 41 from Oakhurst and Fresno) make sure you make this your first stop in Yosemite – you won’t regret it.

Imperdible

By Ladmir |

One of the most impressive sites of Yosemite. The giant sequoias trees are beautiful, large and imposing. They say there are about 500 of these trees.

Giants

By amsterdam05 |

You have to park your car and take a free bus to the real grove. From there it takes you still quite a steep walk to the first sequuoias. Bit it is really worth the effort. Impressive giants.

Majestic

By pinir67 |

The Mariposa Grove is a great place to connect with nature, appreciate it and understand how tiny and insignificant we are in comparison to it.
Easy stroll of 1 hour will take you into a counter clock well maintained trail through beautiful redwood and sequoia trees. Incredible.

Yep, they’re big ol’ trees...

By StreetwiseSmart |

...feel I need to prefix this review with a note that I found Yosemite NP underwhelming - I was expecting more. Where were the ‘walk out the door and hit a trail’ trails? Why aren’t the trails better signposted with clearer direction? Why, for ease of getting about, are there not walking routes that run alongside the highways through the park? It seemed that to experience anything in Yosemite required a vehicle journey. Mariposa Grove continued to meet my low expectations - our first attempt to access the grove failed as the car park was closed; yes closed. Apparently this happens all the time. Too busy. Well hey, if you’re so busy then why not limit how long vehicles can park - three hours seems sufficient for what’s to see. Why should some people be able to wile away a whole day there when others are turned away. The grove itself is tourist central. Honestly, worse that Fisherman’s Wharf. The two-way footpath regularly grinds to a halt as some teen vies for ‘the perfect selfie’. The redwood trees are impressive but how can they and their surroundings be appreciated as you’re jostled by people trying to get closer, further away, or that want you out of their photo. For me, unless you’re desperate to see big old trees, don’t bother. The best part of visiting the grove was the walk back down to the visitor centre (we didn’t bother with waiting for the shuttle). I got more enjoyment from walking that path and seeing the views, than I did looking up at an old tree.
I’d tell anyone - if you’ve got time on your trip, then save an afternoon and drive through Yosemite but don’t bother stopping - you’ll see the best of
Yosemite through the car windscreen. Joshua Tree is a better experience all round.

The trees are breathtaking. Hike is moderate to see the larger trees.

We took the shuttle to Mariposa Grove around 6pm in the fall. We had about an hour to see the trees before it got dark (the last shuttle runs at 8pm). The hike to see the larger trees is actually a moderate effort required. We decided to just make the first loop because it was getting dark. The trees in the loop are amazing. You can see burn marks on most of them from the 2018 fires in California.

Short hike but peaceful

By Celeste J |

Requires a short hike to see the giant sequoias. There was still snow on the main walkway, so not the best for wheelchairs and strollers, etc. Also, make sure to wear water proof shoes/hiking shoes. It's worth the trip though and definitely a must see for nature lovers.

Most of the Grove is Closed for Construction

By Grover R |

The grove and trees itself are a 5 star, but the attraction only gets 3 due to mismanagement. First, despite no snow on the road you still have to hike two miles one way to reach the grove. Second, when you get there the trail to the trees was underconstruction and closed. Third, they do not communicate this very well to enable you to plan. If we had known this we probably would have allocated our time differently to another attraction.

What I did see of the grove was impressive and made me wish I had more time. The trail is not bad walking through a beautiful section of forest that still had snow at the highest points. It is just you want to see Sequoias and you don't see them until the end. There are other groves in Yosemite that you could visit if it were known that this was closed. I hope this helps you plan better.

Disappointing

By David B |

It’s unfortunate that road to trailhead is closed and requires 2 mile hike each way. To see few sequoias you have to hike another 2 mile loop. Will need to hike 6 miles to see very few redwoods. It’s unfortunate that they had so much damage in windstorm but until road to trailhead or shuttles are running its simply not worth the time. It’s worth 30 mins of time but not the 3-4 hours it takes. Due to disappointment we altered plans and drove 3 hours to Sequioa National Park and saw General Sherman and Congress trail loop which was nothing short of amazing if you can swing it. Many more trees with easy trails for hikers of all ages.

Amazing!

By Lisa G |

After a 3 mile 1 way hike we came upon some of the most amazing trees you could imagine. It is hard to describe what one feels in the presence of such magnificence. The shuttle from the Mariposa grove welcome center was not running due to covid and the 1st Grove of sequoias are hard to see due to closure of the trail because if a huge wind storm in January but the hike to see the Grizzly Giant and also the California tunnel tree. It was not that crowded when we went later in the day. Bring plenty of water and be prepared to be amazed.

The wonders of God.

By johndisepio |

My family used to go to Sequoia every year when I was a boy and we used to have so much fun hiking,
cooking at our cabin, playing in the cold river and seeing the biggest trees in the world. The cabins are now gone but the trees are still there. You just have to get in your car and go see one of the wonders of the world. Don't play with the bears, they can get pretty big, just watch and admire all of the wildlife and you will be grateful you did.

Must See

By mfmc8591 |

After visiting Yosemite Valley, my husband and I were hesitant about driving to Mariposa Grove. However, it was a lovely two lane, no passing, therefore slow, drive the trees. Once there a shuttle takes you to the actual park. The trees are massive and awe inspiring. Some of the pathways are a little steep but alternative pathways are provided for accessibility. It was well worth the drive and the time spent.

Magestious

Between so many big trees I felt like a so little. The sherman, the biggest tree on earth is beautiful. Just by looking is worth the visit.

Wonderful

I returned to the Mariposa Grove after 5 years to see how the recently completed revamping of the grove experience changed the place. A big change and a very positive change it is. Gone are the team's and the traffic jam and in its place a well organized experience for all. The plaza has plenty of parking and it is a short walk to the shuttle boarding are for the 5 or 10 minute ride to the grove. The grove was quiet enough to hear the water from a nearby stream as u walked along the new boardwalk on my way through the grove. The board walk is wide, gently sloped with plenty of spots to stop and enjoy the view or rest. I give it a big thumbs up , even for the older folks like myself with some difficulty walking...namely arthritis. Don't miss it.

Awe-inspiring trees and a vigorous walk

By Sheryl F |

Worth your time to drive down to the sequoias (about an hour south of the Yosemite valley). It's very well organized with tram service and clearly marked trails that provide a nice, brisk walk if you take the loop. The trees themselves are giant and majestic.

This walk will get your heart pumping, but well worth it.

This is Yosemite, not Disneyland. So it’s nature at its best. This is hundreds of years of history in the making, it was never designed for humans to have an easy time seeing it. Having said that it has certainly been assisted in modern times to let us visit it. To give a balanced review we took the trail up from the main car park. $35 to enter Yosemite, but that lasts for 7 days. The walk up does have some fallen trees on it, of which most you walk around. If not, sit on it and slide over. It’s a steep walk and takes over an hour. Yes, it’s 2 miles. At that point you reach the car park, or if you had the appropriate badge, that’s where you park. Toilets were open and operational. Fallen Monarch road with easy access at this point is closed as there was damage to it. However easy access road to the left all the way to Bachelor and Three sisters is open, though to be honest if you are pushing a wheelchair it isn’t going to be easy. From here we walked the trail to Grizzly Giant and California Tunnel Tree. Total time at this point for a man of 60 years from entrance to Tunnel Tree took exactly one and a half hours. That was what I wanted to see so I can’t comment on anything else beyond. Return walk was down the road and was smoother but felt longer. No speeding traffic came past, just plenty of happy hikers with pleasant “Good mornings.” Total time to Tunnel Tree and back was 3 hours. Total distance 6.2 miles. Plenty of toilets available at various intervals, road or trail. If you are inspired by natures wonders well worth the effort. If you are looking for Disneyland and staff at every corner you are visiting the wrong location. Put simply, sorry to say but not everyone will be able to visit and enjoy it. For those that can, do. Another attraction nearby is the swinging bridge which is a lot easier to drive and walk to, which we did later, so consider that if you don’t want this strenuous hike.

A Wonderful Place to Take the Family

By Anthony D |

The newly redone pathway through the Mariposa grove of giant Sequoias offers a great view of these beautiful and ancient trees for the whole family. The path is easy to travel and because you are under these giants mostly in the shade. If you have never stood under one of these trees then prepare to be amazed! They are huge and just amazing to behold !

Brilliant day trip

Giants of Nature

By Fallbrookian |

This beautiful grove of Sequoias inspires the feeling of awe. We were so pleased to be there in May before the crowds and have time to walk around and enjoy the peaceful sound of the wind throughout and the majesty of the trees. The boardwalk trail in the lower loop makes it easy for mobility. We saw more than one person enjoying it by wheelchair. We parked at the shuttle lot and rode up to the grove by bus. It was a short ride through the forest up a steep hill. Shuttles run every ten minutes, so never a long wait. Plenty of bathroom opportunities at both ends of the shuttle ride.

Cool Giant Trees

By Yosemitesteve |

These trees are gigantic. It's hard to imagine you are looking at trees over 2000 years old.
The shuttle area seems to have ample parking. The bus wait times are very short but again we were there in October. The restrooms were clean and there's a small gift shop.
The Mariposa Grove area has walks/hikes to suit everyone. My Mom only felt like doing the main, short trail. The walkway path looked nice and fairly new. There were benches along the way to sit and enjoy your surroundings. We saw a few of the giants on the short trail. The plaques along the way were filled with some neat information.
The return shuttle had almost no wait time either. If you've never seen the giants it's a must see since these trees exist in few places in the world.

Grove of Giants are the Real Deal!!

By DannyWasserman |

This area is just south of the Yosemite Valley experience. Take a day and go into the grove of large sequoias and see why the weather and topography makes this area the perfect spot for these larger than life trees to grow and thrive. It takes a few hours to most of the day to witness this area, and the grove has paths and places to take photo opportunities.

Beautiful Sequoias! Warning - A 4-mile STRENUOUS hike!

By rrkkjones |

We were visiting Yosemite National Park and, of course, this was one of our must-sees! This is not something you can easily just drive by, walk to, and see. For people with handicap placards, however, you can drive up a special access road thereby eliminating a minimum 1.8m strenuous hike. You still have to walk some distance to see the famous trees in the area.

For those who are not eligible to use the special access roads, from the parking lot you have to first hike 1.8 miles to be even near any famous sequoias. This hike is pretty strenuous and uphill!!! One of our friends has bad asthma. This climb was extremely difficult for him, but he did make it. Whether that was wise is another question. It was also hard for me and for other people in our party. Once you reach the top you still have to hike/walk more to see the Grizzly Giant, the Bachelor and the 3 Graces, and the Tunnel Tree. But that hike or walk can be done on a paved road with a not-so-bad incline -- relatively flat.

Note, if you go up, you have to hike down to the parking lot! So, this trip is easily a 4-mile difficult hike. Due to covid, the shuttle to bring you down the parking lot (once you are up near the grove) is not running. Fortunately for us, we had somebody in the parking lot who was able to beg the ranger to allow her to use the special access road to pick us up. (So we didn't have to do a return 1.8 m hike).

We weren't sure if we would be picked up but our plan of attack then was to walk down the special access road. We thought that would be an easier walk down rather than the original path we took. We did see a few people walking down this special access road. So just be forewarned before you start your trek. Bring water!

Was it worth it! Personally, I thought seeing the beautiful trees and grove was worth the hike. I just wished that we knew what we were getting ourselves into before we started. If we knew ahead of time, our friend probably would not have done the trek. Would I do it again? I think so!

If you love nature and walking, this is the place to go to. Our family thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Yosemite and the Grove.

Huge Trees and such a peaceful walk!

By sephirothseviltwin |

Like the rest of Yosemite, a really wonderful, peaceful place, to appreciate nature. Yosemite really shows nature at its best, with breathtaking views. You can see the huge trees, and view all the big named ones. If you are looking for the Grizzly Giant, bear in mind that it is 1/3rd shorter than before, due to a lightning strike!
Really wonderful trail to walk and thoroughly enjoyed. Take a camera!

First Sequoia Experience...Spectacular!

By LynneMooHoo |

Absolutely loved getting o see sequoias for my first time ever...they were magnificent! This grove was at the far southwest part of the park and was a destination in itself, but very unlike the Valley area of Yosemite where we spent the rest of our time. The first couple of miles in this area are quite crowded but once you get beyond where most people go, it was very quiet and peaceful. We thoroughly enjoyed nearly a whole day there...with a picnic at the top overlooking a spectacular valley. Highly recommend visiting this spot!
