Your Awesome National Forest

By TaylorPettit |

Literally thousands seriously thousands of acres of forest which you enjoy at your leisure. Want to hike do it. Want to fish, go ahead. Want to camp ok camp. It's your forest. This place is so pristine so open so amazing it defies description.

Beautiful wooded area far from the crowds

By danap765 |

Beautiful deciduous trees cover this little slice of the Ozarks. The well maintained roads carry you through huge stands of oak, hickory, dogwood and walnut. The colors in the Fall are awesome. Numerous streams and lakes dot the area creating thousands of perfect places for picnics. Roaring River State Park is also located here offering beautiful waterfront walks as well as a state hatchery that is open free to the public. There are several campgrounds including Roaring River and several Corps of Engineer parks along the lakes.

All of the Mark Twain National Forests are great places to hike and get away. Just driving through the forest is enjoyable. Try find geocaches here.

We passed through a portion of the Mark Twain National Forest on our trip from St. Louis to Arkansas. Spectacular vast forested area with very few houses or settlements!

Nice park

By Jaroslav Nečas |

Entire park is very large, we spend one afternoon by walking around Council Bluff Lake. Hike was quite easy.

Once of the nicest forests in the midwest

Highly recommend a car or motorcycle ride through the Ozarks and Mark Twain is part of the Ozark mountains.

Nice hike!

By CSchex |

I was pleasantly surprised when we arrived that there was actually some playground equipment. I had not read that on the website. We went on the Blossom Trail and hiked up to a great little rock formation. It was a good hike for our crew (3 boys, 13, 4 & 2). There were a few places that someone had to put the baby in a carrier, but he did a lot of the hike himself. It was longer than the signs posted. My pedometer said it was closer to 2.5 miles than the 1 mile it had listed. Lane Spring is really pretty and clear too, and we walked out to it and let the kids skip rocks. We had a great afternoon there.

Quick, Delightful Visit

By czimmer31 |

We were visiting in the area and discovered a hiking trail by Stone Mill Spring. If possible, we enjoyed the easy (stony) trail more than our grandson! The Spring bubbled into a pond like area and then "rivers" down to the Big Piney River. People were fishing (catch and release season) for small fish and several people had their dogs (on a leash). We were thrilled by the antics of an apparently well know armadillo. There was a bathroom available. We noticed more trails that looked less traveled & quite steep.

I love to hike and photograph - this area is definitely a great place to hike (not so much photography due to the density of the forest where I was). It is rugged and there are several hiking paths to suit most anyone.

Beautiful Scenic Drive

By JeramieOK |

We go through here every time we go to Roaring River, Eureka, Or Branson. Typical Ozark scenery with large cliffs, draws, hardwoods, etc. Breath taking during the fall because of the falling leafs and colors.

Right now (fall) is a great time to go drive through on the way to Branson for the Christmas lights, Silver Dollar City's Christmas Displays, etc.

Beautiful Forrest

By Tanya S |

Great camp ground and trout fishing at the Roaring River State Park. Lots of people catch lots of fish at the river just not me. They just look at me and smile. The trout hatchery is right here and the fish are plentiful. I like the lodge at the top of the hill. Good home cooked food.

Driving through Missouri

Mountain Biking in Mark Twain National Forest

By laurette042 |

We have visited the Mark Twain National Forest with our mountain bikes. We did a wonderful early morning biking through beautiful gravel roads and wonderful forest. There is also camping available , sites have a powerpoint.

Nice motorcycle riding

By John D |

We were just cutting through the MT Forest on the way to Rolla. If you are looking for the best motorcycle riding take the roads marked with letters or double letters. Very pleasant.

Scenic

Ended up on the road that went through and it was a long scenic road. Enjoyed the view. May go back and spend more time there.

Bell Mountain Wilderness

By Joe R |

This is a beautiful area of Missouri and offers many options for outdoor activities. We hiked and backpacked Bell Mountain which is a 11.6 mile loop with a grand summit of Bell Mountain. There are a number of campsites at the top which give you great views of sunsets or sunrises. Water is available at several places from Joe’s Creek on the north part of the loop. The parking area and trailhead are located on Highway A. A must see and must do!

One of the best hikes I have done!! Being from NY it was a shock to find 70 deg weather at this time of the year.

By Kevin L |

Even now I found my walk to be..... enchanting. The city of Rolla was a great place to start from. This is a place that you could spend a summer just enjoying nature. It's a must stop if you love the outdoors

Nice drive

By collegerep |

Nice drive there and just a good outdoor experience.
The trees should start serious color change in 10 days,

Silver Mines was great

By wenchfiona |

We stayed at the Silver Mines campground and it was lovely. The trick is, to get to the RV camping, you have to go past the sign for camping, over the bridge and take the next right. It took many tries and stops to look at their maps to figure this out. They don't have showers but instead we sat out in the river and washed us and the dogs off. Apparently this area can have problems with lead so don't drink the river water and wash off stuff when you're done. We did have a critter get into our food that we left out (our bad, no the critter) and we had to clean up some trash and tomatoes that it didn't like.

Really pretty

By 579Tammy |

We go through the forest on our way to my sister's and it is really pretty scenery. Don't go through at night as it is just way too dark and spooky, but during the day really beautiful.

Fun place to play

By vtxriders |

You can pick up a map at the Ranger Station in Cassville showing all of the trails. Fun place to hike or take the jeep out for an afternoon. I've even been known to have some fun with the camera out there.

By Velinda W |

I like there is no city, buildings, etc., but wish there were family picnic areas along road sides.

Lovely trails

By MsProfessorADK |

I thoroughly enjoyed hiking through the extensive trail system. There was a lot of poison oak along the trailway, but as I am not allergic, it did not bother me at all. Very worth the time spent there!

Awesome

Forest is pretty.

The hills and foggy background is pretty. Lots of curves though. You might want to bring some Sprite.

Visiting neat places close to home

By Linn R |

Mark Twain National Forest is a vast place to see. If you hike, leave a trail of bread crumbs, or if on horse, he will do it for you.
So much to see. Overnight campers can be done around Crag A Lee. The Ozarks at its finest on these trails.

Beautiful Restorative Nature

By LittleLassie |

Mark Twain NF is broken up into about 6 areas over southern MO. We were in the area of Rolla, it was beautiful. Rolling hills and heavy forests. A great easy to do trip and many places to stop and enjoy nature. Also, old Route #66 runs through Rolla, a nice piece of history to check out.

Beautiful area

Mark twain forest is a beautiful area to get away. There’s places for tent, RV and cabin camping. I love the walking trails and everything is clean and well-kept

We had a great time

By Dawn D |

My tip would be, take your time. Don't rush thru. You'll find interesting things to see, do and buy. I recommend going to MEL'S CANDLES & More. She's awesome and so is her shop. And she has good prices.

Driving thru

By Karla S |

Been driving thru Mark Twain Nat'l Forest for about a year now coming and going from Missouri to Arkansas. Beautiful areas. Lots of various places to picnic, camp or explore. Most areas are well taken care of .... even with the lack of government monies.

Great visit

By William S |

Its nice to see the changes from summer to fall colors. The peace and quiet of this place is worth the stop. You owe it to yourselves to enjoy these places and sometimes you have to stop and smell the roses. Great on a motorcycle.

What a great place!

By NotNiceNurse |

We aren't from MO we are from the desert and aren't used to the lush vegetation :) Did tons of hiking but due to vegetation some trails were hard to follow. It was absolutely gorgeous. There are so many different bugs and butterflies it was amazing. This was my favorite part of our trip to MO.

Beautiful National Forest in Rolling Hills of Missouri

By CJ5687 |

We drove through the Mark Twain National Forest and were impressed with this treasure in the American Forest/Park system. The Mark Twain NF is broken up, and the area we were in near Rolla was a carpet of green. Peaceful and enjoyable. If you enjoy green areas, then you will like this National Forest!

Nature!

By Kristen8012 |

We visited a small portion of this park. Our son enjoyed swimming in the river. Some were fishing, others swimming, some were in canoes/tubes/kayaks. There was plenty of parking and the bathroom facilities were open. There was a spring just down from where we were. Always enjoy visiting the great outdoors.

Hmmmm.

By blackstarryskye |

A million years ago, when I was more of a free spirit, I went to a Rainbow People gathering in the Mark Twain National Forest. I only stayed overnight and left early the next morning because I couldn't deal with the culture shock. I guess it wouldn't of been so bad if I had been used to camping in the wilderness, with almost no food or water except for the nearby river.

Lane Spring

By Koyangi |

Visited with family for an afternoon to cool off in the river and fish. The spring itself is very cold, but the creek was nice, and we caught a couple rainbow trout.

By Edward S |

A great scenic stop, can definitely spend an entire time hiking, scouting, and finding great wildlife.

Mark Twain National Forest

By Beulah S |

I live surrounded by the Mark Twain Forest. It is full of animals of all kinds and all the birds of the area and those that just stop through on their way to somewhere else. You do have to be on watch while on the trails for the bear that are out and roaming around. There are now signs out to warn the tourist to be aware. It is a wonderful and great place to experience your life. You cannot go wrong with a visit to any part of the great Mark Twain National Forest.

Little quiet time for nature

By Seward C |

We stopped by here early spring and enjoyed a little trail walk ....we have been here before and always enjoyed the little areas to just have a coffee and watch the birds etc. We are not long hikers and it is nice to have a area for your "nature time"
