take the tour

By Judi O |

We saw the movie at the visitor's center and took the tour. Beautiful mansion. The wallpaper is fantastic. Then we had the opportunity to attend a family event at the mansion. The staff was great.

Beautiful piece of history!

By LynnA1 |

From the minute you pull up curbside this place pulls you in. The architecture is magnificent. The surrounding grounds perfectly groomed. I could spend hours going through the rooms marveling at all of the details. Add to this the added bonus of being able to rent this jewel for private events. I was very fortunate to have recently coordinated a wedding at the mansion ( I am an event planner). Laura, Lana and staff are over the top sweet hearts. I would love to work with these ladies any day! And the room back drops are a photographers dream for wedding shots. I highly recommend McHenry Mansion for an afternoon sight seeing as well as a private event venue!

Fascinating Modesto Victorian-era history, a peek into the past

By evanie |

We were driving from Yosemite to the Bay Area and stopped in Modesto to take a tour of the Victorian-era McHenry Mansion. Our docent was delightful and very invested in sharing the history of the house, family, and area. A lot of care went into the house restoration and it's a shame that more Modesto grand houses weren't saved. This house was in grave disrepair at one point, but was saved by some very dedicated citizens. One can see unique items from that time (like human hair wreaths). Remember to visit the gift shop where you can see historic photographs of the family and house (it looks like the original trees lining the road are still standing). We went in April so the garden is lovely. There is no fee to visit but donations are welcomed (box in the house).

love touring this mansion tour guide so helpful and interesting

By peterpanjaffray |

this is worth the stop much infor about an interesting time Although this isn't on a grand scale the owner was trying to cut corners to get the house up quicker it was interesting

Gallo Family's selfless gift to Modesto

By julianna435 |

we who live in Modesto and surrounding areas are so lucky to have this glorious landmark to visit at any time. The docents who work at the mansion are so very knowledgeable which makes the tours that much more pleasant

A fascinating look at the history of Modesto

By ReneeW1 |

You'll really step back in time when you visit the McHenry Museum. Each room is set up to look almost as it did back when the family lived here. The docents do a great job explaining each room and provide a better experience than going on your own. It's a wonderful way to spend the afternoon!

Christmas in the Mansion

By Kristi J |

The Mansion is the best location for transporting yourself and kids to the past. Beautifully maintained and still open. Amazing.

By TicTocDragon |

Great place to visit, take in some Victorian era history. Loved the beautiful artwork and furniture of the time. The Gallo family revived what history there was in Modesto. Which isn't very much at all, as you find out on the tour. It seems like the city and its citizens have let Modesto history pass by without recording it properly or protecting it.
Beautifully taken care of inside and out.
Many weddings and special occasions in the gardens behind the Mchenry Mansion.
Only downside to this tour was the gift shop waiting for guests of the tour at the end. Its just another way to help maintain the building.

The house would be splendid without the added merchandise.

Special house

By Steven L |

Worth taking the time to see. It stands out in the neighborhood of Modesto. Better to visit in the Morning.

Worth your time.

By michellefY3233KQ |

Took a private tour with my son for a school project it was amazingly informative. We both enjoyed ourselves.

Its free

By andrewtY1233YF |

I enjoyed the free tour which you can register just up the street for free Monday to Friday, weekend different.

The Mansion itself is okay, but the associated museum across the street is better..

By Douglas D |

I've been here a few times and who dos,t like visiting an old mansion. a friend who was with me got the chills and said "something bad happened in this room" and wanted to leave immediately.. Maybe the para normal people should pay it a visit.

Very Informative Tour Including Early History of Modesto Area

By DanGalt |

My wife and I were escorted on a tour of the mansion by a very knowledgeable docent. The tour is worth it just for the historical background provided. The mansion itself is in a constant state of upgrade as funding becomes available, and hearing its own history is also very interesting. We'd recommend this tour to anyone and especially those with children age 7 or 8 and above.

Beautiful Victorian

By Dan W |

Well restored mansion offering free tours by well versed guides.
Tour takes about 30-40 minutes and is very informative. Site also has a well furnished gift shop. It is 1 block away from the McHenry Museum (old library) which is also well worth visiting.
Artifacts are professionally displayed and exhibits well documented. You can see both in about 2 hours time.

Hidden gem

By califwayoflife |

We were in town for the afternoon on our way home to San Francisco and decided to stop at this lovely museum.
We had friends recommended it to us. We spent two hours with the delight of learning so much more about the central valley .We then finished the tour in the lovely gift shop ,where we were pleasantly surprised that there was something for all ages to enjoy. I think I spent over $200!!! The nice sales lady was quite informative about the area and helpful in the shop. I think her name was Susan.
I'd highly recommend this place

Worth stopping

By Leslie N |

My husband and I decided to take the slightly longer drive home and went through Modesto. We stopped at the McHenry Mansion and it was a real treat. The home has been lovingly restored and is in immaculate condition. I especially loved the period wallpapers using nature and bringing it indoors. The volunteers and docents are enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Well worth it. Kudos to the curator, docents, volunteers, the Gallo family, and the city. A real treasure.

Historic

By Max S |

The mansion is amazing! The docents are even better. They lead you through this piece of history in small groups and give a window into what life in that era was like.

Worth a quick visit

By fairyknob |

McHenry Mansion is a charming Victorian home that's been well maintained and comes with an interesting history. We visited during the Christmas holiday so it was beautifully decorated. Modesto doesn't have much else in regards to historical landmarks so definitely put this on your list should you find yourself in the area.

Been here a couple years during christmas time.

By Eddie B |

A unique view into what a time period of how priveledged people lived. A home decor of Christmas and love. How it must have been without AC... How could the go w/o it:)

Pretty

By Samantha m |

Pretty place for pictures throughout the courtyard. Well kept and very comfortable place to walk and relax

Beautiful Mansion, wonderful docents

By Nancy F |

My aunt, husband and I visited this mansion on a Sunday and had a wonderful tour with an extremely knowledgeable docent. We watched a film prior to our tour and it was a wonderful overview of the history of the mansion, the family and the times. The mansion was owned by Robert McHenry who was really not who he said he was. But that is part of the mystery of the mansion and I'll let the docent tell you more.
The mansion has been lovingly restored to its original beauty. There are a few original pieces though most of the furniture is period furniture not original. I loved the Victorian wall papering, even on the ceilings. Our docent had lots of stories about the family and the furnishings and took us through every room. Thanks to the Gallos who bought the mansion and gave it to the city as a museum.

Insteresting.

By Sarah J |

Interesting place. The kids loved it. We went as a little tread for the kids and they enjoyed it a lot. We got some history and fun in one trip.

By Brenda S |

An ideal setting for such a wonderful visit. I would recommend this spot for anyonw. You will never be disappointed.

A Must-See in Modesto

By Amanda M |

The McHenry Mansion is a definite must-see when you are visiting Modesto. It is free to visit but you have to be accompanied by a Docent who will give you a guided tour. Our Docent Elizabeth was wonderful, very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the family and building's history. The Mansion is beautiful, inside and out and the history of the McHenry family is fascinating. There is a donation box as the Mansion relies heavily on donations from the public to keep running. It was worth every penny of our donation.

Interesting Space

By Jules V |

The McHenry Mansion is super charming. Having a docent follow you from room to room like a conversational mugger, not so much. Still, worth a gander and a lovely space for formal events.

Christmas

By victoria b |

I took my grandchildren to the McHenry Mansion for the Dickens Christmas Fair. The function was very well done and a great experience.

Great docents give a wonderful tour! Super gift shop!

By Sue C |

Gorgeous old mansion with fascinating history! Be sure to make it a must to do over the Christmas season. The mansion and the docents are all decorated for the season!

Beautiful place to go!

By Grace C |

The McHenry mansion is a great place to go and explore. They have tours that tell you about the wonderful history of the McHenry mansion. It is a fun thing to do when you are looking for things to do around Modesto. Sometimes the McHenry mansion even has special events that are really fun. I would recommend that you should visit the McHenry mansion.

Thanks for accommodating

By Trenae F |

A coworker and I are in town on business and we’re looking for something to do on an afternoon off. The hotel staff directed us to Modesto so we really wanted to see the mansion.

We arrived 20 minutes before closing, after the las tour time. The docent could have turned us away, but she was pleasant, informative, and efficient.

The mansion is beautiful and the stories made me want to research this family more.

I love to encounter a bit of history any time I can.

Beautiful Historic Fascinating

By Jeff N |

I love the McHenry Mansion, especially at Christmas. You have to see it at Christmas time. It's a must see.

By explorergirl10 |

The staff there is really rude this is not a place I would ever visit again. A small town staff with outdated attitudes.

The McHenry Mansion

By Ron0944 |

This is the ideal place for social events, parties, weddings, etc. The grounds are very well kept and the staff is great. Beautiful furnishings add to the ambiance of the mansion.

Restored Excellence

By SydSays |

Start in the nearby gift shop that has a small theater showing a video about the McHenry family. Always good to know the story of the people who lived at the residence. The restoration of the home from a divided apartment building back to its original layout was an amazing process to see as well. The gift shop is filled with a variety books, gadgets, art, etc. for every age group. A wonderful place to shop even if you are not going to tour the house.

The home is beautifully restored architecturally and decoratively. Each room held a variety of historic items on display. The docents were knowledgeable about the home and McHenry family and pleasant in general. It is easy to park nearby

Worth it if you are in the area

By Holly C |

It's a lovely Victorian mansion with attention to period details. (They are still finishing restoration after a fire.) It is one of the few historical sites to visit in Modesto. Unless you are really into Victorian mansions I wouldn't go out of my way to visit it, but it is pleasant if you happen to be in Modesto.

Admission is free, tour is guided, hours are limited.

The gift shop is particularly nice. The volunteers are very friendly.

Lovely old manse

By brambl67 |

We enjoyed our tour even though many rooms were closed for restoration after a fire. Our guide provided a good history of the building and its original owners. We will return when the restoration is complete.

Still under restoration

By jlk703 |

As of April 8, the mansion is closed for restoration. They are hoping for a May 1st opening. The visitor center next door is cute and adorable. Ask to see the video of the mansion, gives you a real feeling for the items in the mansion. The McHenry museum is open and located about a block and a half from the mansion. Excellent exhibits and good docents.

Christmas open house

By mcpcmp |

I had never been to the Mansion, so when we saw it open at Christmas we went for a tour. Enjoyed ourselves very much. They had very knowledgable Docents. You need to visit.

The mansion

By Traveler206186 |

Was very disappointed to hear that the mansion was divided up and into rental rooms. Then put back into what it is now. Took the joy out of it.

By Bryteworks |

I especially enjoyed the gift shop with memorabilia. I remember mainly the tall ceilings and long drapes. Reminds me of the John Muir house in Martinez. I prefer to walk alone; guides are gracious and knowledgabale. hours are not so convenient.

Great Modesto history visit

By mareehawkins |

Plan a visit to our McHenry Mansion Visitor Center and Mansion, the McHenry Museum and have lunch in downtown Modesto where there are many great places to eat. You'll be glad you paid a visit to Modesto and even understand the history of the Central Valley a bit more.

Step Back in Time

By HeartonFire64 |

What a wonderful way to Step Back In Time. Love taking a journey through the past, and McHenry Mansion is a great place to start!

McHenry Mansion

By bless235 |

We were traveling through California and made a little side trip to the mansion. It is beautiful! It's FREE and they give you a very informative tour through the house.

Historic house

By Frieda W |

I like old houses. I like the feel of those who have lived there. The docents are very knowledgeable and helpful. The museum store carries a wide variety of memorabelia and unique items. Have attended several dinner table decoration fund raisers. I love the photos of old Modesto.

It was draped with the 4th of July colors/bunting. We took pictures.

By Sharon J |

The Mansion. So glad it has been restored. It is still like stepping back in time when you visit. Can't wait until Christmas with the house will once again be open for the festivities with all their decor.

Memories oftimes past!!!

By Nancy A |

Wonderful afternoon tour of a Victorian Mansion, decorated beautifully! And a definite must for people who love history!!!! Everything is authentic to the time periods of 1884 -early 1900s. Tours run around 40 min. Could be longer or shorter depending on your time limit.

Great historical site

By Rex W |

Our niece had her wedding here, but we had an opportunity to view the interior of the mansion as well as the grounds in a private tour. Really a great facility, lots of victorian style exhibits.

Landmark

By Noreen F |

It has quite a bit of history about Modesto and the foundering families that settled this area. Along with artifacts from days long ago . Cool amount of pictures, and stories about the main group of families and their business they conducted

Beautiful Victorian

By Kathy B |

This is the most beautifully restored Victoian mansion that I have ever visited. Inside and out, it is colorful, tastefully done with a history that is a credit to the Central Valley. Knowledgeable docents give informative tours and it's free!!

An excellent stop in Modesto, great representation of local history.

By Gabriela N |

Absolutely an excellent stop in Modesto, just make sure that you don't set your GPS to McHenry House. The tours are free and the interior breathtaking. All is restored to the original state. Highly recommended. The gift shop actually sells very practical items, such as beautiful ceramic tea kettles, for a very reasonable price.

Lovely Mansion

By sha2ron |

Such a fun place to visit and see how the family lived when the mansion was the McHenry home. I really enjoy the Teas they have a few times a year. The mansion is beautiful during the Christmas season.

Beautiful Home in Modesto!

By trevor4travel |

It's a gorgeous home with a ton of history related to our local town.

A beautiful representation of Modesto's history

By ShanAnd |

I have loved visiting the McHenry Mansion since my childhood, but the best trips I've taken have been during the Christmas season, with the entire mansion decked out in gorgeous decorations! My children love the Dickens Faire, when the mansion is filled with cheer and warmth.

Very Beautiful Home

By lic0rice |

This is a very beautiful home we almost lost it to a fire a few years ago I am so thankful that they were stored it and we can still visit it. I want to go back at Christmas time when it is all decorated it is magical

By Highway1Star |

You must see this at Christmas'

By Barbara B |

We visit every year in December. It is absolutely beautiful. The Christmas Spirit is alive and well at the mchenry mansion. It's a little much for very small children, but they do try to accommodate everyone.

visited in 2016, during a holiday presentation.

By dcwiii2312 |

McHenry Mansion provides the viewer the opportunity to step back in time, to a long gone era, with docents to add to the mystery and mystique of life back when Modesto was a very small town.

Local history

By Catherine L |

The docents were very informative. They tell you the history of the house and all the changes it has gone through over the years. The house is beautiful inside and out. I have gone there with my grandkids on a tour and attended a garden dinner. The house is appointed in period pieces right down to a mouse trap in the kitchen. During Christmas is the real time to visit. The decorations are just the thing to put you in the spirit.

Great Historical Landmark

By Cheryl S |

I love old historical buildings. This one did not disappoint. It is a true beauty. Make sure you take advantage of this local beauty!

Kinda cool if your in the area

By wingnut457 |

Nice look at old time Modesto /Central Valley. Not sure I would make a special trip, but if you are in the area it is worth a look.

By tnitemare |

Last time I was there was before the fire around 2005. It was Christmastime and the house was decorated beautifully. You could feel the aura of history as you walked through the guided tour. The basement had an eerie feel to it but only that of being closed in. If you visit Modesto, you should definitely take the tour of the house. I'm going again as soon as it's open after the renovations from the recent fire

Beautiful old Mansion

By bcallinv |

I enjoyed going through this beautiful old house but most of the furniture are reproductions and not the original. Other then that, it was amazing to see how the people lived in the 1800's

Wonderful Victorian Home

By Sofia B |

My family visits during the Holidays every year. It is a must see experience! Beautifully decorated and the docents are very informative.

By Debra T |

My daugher was married here. How nice. House was so nice getting readty for the wedding. Needs more parking space

A Piece of Local History

By Barbara A |

Amazing piece of local history! Just took my third grade students on a field trip tour. So much to see inside the mansion! Tour guides are extremely knowledgeable and so nice! Great for a guided tour or just to wander around and look through at your own pace. Beautiful place to visit!

Christmas Open House - Tour and Dessert at the Mansion

By 704Traveler |

/The mansion is decorated as it would have been in its early years. One oil lamp remains - in the entry - used only for hte Christmas Open House. The docents wear period clothing, share history and stories with us. Ladies playing stringed instruments performed Christmas music in the living room. The "family and maid" reenacted a dinner scene. Dessert served downstairs. There's a gift shop a block away.

Dickens Faire and tour

By sshikers |

I visited the Dickens Faire, Farmer's Market and was able to tour the historic mansion as well? Authentic furnishings, looking out the window I could envision how it might have been when it was the Mchenry's home.

My 15 year old daughter and I spent the day going to second hand stores and we went to the museum then velvet creamery

By 125richardjr |

The staff is really good. They sit and let you enjoy the exhibits but if you have a question they are very helpful. Lots of good, interesting, high quality exibits.

Well Loved

By Cat33R |

Congratulations to Modesto for rescuing and restouring this beautiful old home.

I like the fact of having to watch the video of the history before touring the home, as it gives perspective. The history of the poeple whom lived in the house is just as interesting as the home itself, albeit a little sad due to a family tragedy.

The home is wonderfully restored and you can tell well loved by the people who work here and lead the tours.

If you love old homes, it is worth a visit. It is one of a kind in Modesto.

worth the drive out to Modesto if you like high vicrorian restorations

By scott r |

Lovingly (expensively) restored late 19thc mansion. Modest by city standards perhaps, it would have been the grandest thing west of the immediate Bay area at the time, save perhaps for a few places in Stockton. Had a fire 12+ years ago - Gallo money brought it back and then some. Holy wallpaer Batman! This is an event venue, so mind the hours, but it's FREE (supported by event revenue) to tour. Do't miss the gift shop display of Christmas ornaments - much better than average selection of actually interesting pieces. Pretty much done to a fare the well in the main rooms, and you do get to see upstairs. Very friendly docents, happy to converse and answer any / all questions. As is often the case with these lesser known gems - a solo and very complete tour. Learned a thing or two, always nice.

Back to the old days

By Cruiser |

This house museum is really a unique part of Modesto. I enjoyed looking at fashions and decor of the past. It’s a nice place to explore

An amazing home

By Jeff C |

A beautifully restored home. The curator has made the home look like the McHenry's could return! Elaine, the docent giving the tour, was so knowledgeable and interesting! And it's FREE!

Old Charm

By Sherawil |

A step back into the history of Modesto. Wonderful to see at Christmas when the Mansion is decorated for the holidays. Nice little gift shop with lots of wonderful tea pot sets for little girls or collectors. Been through the house several times plus attended a beautiful wedding in its gardens.

Intesting and historical find

By VickiA206 |

Came across this at the least minute and glad we did. The volunteers who gave the free tours were very interested in showing you the renovated mansion. Great historical information around this mansion. Definitely glad we found this treasure.

a nice tour of a different era

By earthgirl2019 |

When you arrive you can read about the family in the gift shop, I also knew some from a history book.. The tour guide was a little curt & quick, Took everything a little too personally, Like a librarian does.. I asked her about a room that i did know someone had died in & she got a little upset because i had asked something that was not on the tour, But i knew about.. I just wondered if she had any more info than what i knew.. She didn't.. & Hey.. She asked if we had any questions.. ha.. In all, it was a fun tour to see the beautiful grounds & how things worked & how the "help" had to use a bucket.. under their bed.. when the bathroom was the next room over.. wow..

Victorian With A Vengeance

By frank a |

McHenry Mansion is not a hotel, but a trip into the past. Well over a century old, it exemplifies the spirit and style of a bygone era. This was a private home that still has many of the original appointments, indicating a comfortable, well-to-do lifestyle. By modern standards, the style is formal and a bit cold, but it led this traveler into the past to wonder what it must have been like to live in a time before Isis, increasingly high taxes, and all the other accoutrements of modern civilization. There is a small entrance fee, which the non-profit foundation in charge of the property uses to maintain it. For a trip into the past, we don't have time machines with spinning dials and flashing lights, but we do have McHenry Mansion, redolent of an era that did not yet have the problems which afflict us today.

By Judy95361 |

Have not been there since they had a fire. It is furnished Victorian style. Has a lot of history about Modesto. I have been to special teas, that were very good.

beautiful old Victorian home

By Alice R |

Beautiful decor, and well cared for home. Docents are knowlegable and very willing to share the information about the home and previous owners. Don't miss the Christmas decorations ~!

Beautiful setting for the Christmas Season

By Amandaken |

The mansion durning Christmas is a great way to see it. I was also there for a wedding back in 1980. It was very beautiful

Beautiful!

By Deborah T |

McHenry Mansion is the stately beautiful former home of the McHenry Family. The Gallo Foundation purchased the home and donated it to the City of Modesto. The docents, who give tours daily, are wonderful sources of information. I am fairly certain that each tour is slightly different based on the questions and interests of the guests. It truly is a must see for anyone interested in Modesto City history!

Great Venue

By Kelly T |

Great exhibits for adults and the kids. There several good places to eat within walking distant of the Mansion

Just a perfect tour...

By MtGranny |

Our docent ,M.B. , surely loves this town and all the interesting history that goes with it. Please don't miss this tour while you are in Modesto. Before touring the house there is a short, but informative, film on the McHenry family. There is a lot to see in the mansion and the family history and building of Modesto is quite interesting.

A Part of Modesto History

By Traveler-O-World |

Modesto in California is a "modest" sized city with a population of about 2,00,000. The McHenry Mansion, which was just adjacent to our hotel, is an elegant mansion in Modesto and very much a part of local history. The mansion has been very well maintained and there is no entry fee - it is free!

VIP Reception

By Places2Enjoy |

This is a wonderful place to take pictures. You often see a bride & groom or young adults for there prom taking photos outside. The garden is well kept up. The inside has lots of history that pertains to Modesto. You will see old bicycles that were used long ago. Its a nice place to visit. I went there for the first time for a VIP Reception. They had an outside cater come in and service the event.

Lovely Victorian home open to the public.

By 519alice2016 |

This is a wonderful home, lovingly restored to it's heyday. Beautiful furnishings. Pride of Modesto, cared for by numerous volunteers who give tours and have lots of information about the house and its original owners, the McHenry family.

Beautiful & friendly staff, history at its best!

Lots of volunteers there to answer any questions, very welcoming & informed about the details of this lovely piece of history for Modesto.

Best FREE tour on Highway 99 in California

By Ed258536 |

What a wonderful old mansion in California history. How great it is to see an old mansion restored to the way it was. It is well worth the time spent. It costs nothing but you will be enriched with life the way it was before the streets were paved. If you are there the night before the tour take some pictures. It is well lit up and well presented. Please not that the tours do not start until about 11:30 am. Check on the web for current times.

Modesto's Treasure the McHenry Mansion

By AdventureTravelersCA |

I may be biased...as I am a Docent for the Mansion. It is spectacular now...a special place so worth visiting. We had a fire in Dec of 2011 and while the Mansion was open at times during the renovation it fully opened in April of 2013. It is amazing...you must see the home and the decor to believe it!
It is open Sunday through Friday for tours from 12:30 to 4PM.

A must-see landmark on your Modesto visit!

By LALAE9 |

A wonderful landmark in Modesto! The docents are very knowledgeable and pleasant. The home is beautiful. The basement is a venue for local events.

Take a step thru time

By Linda Martha M |

See how things were done back in the day. Enjoy their story and the Sophisticated history lesson. The mansion is in the community and its free. It's a museum now, but once upon a time, it was a home to the family before us. Shop in their little boutique before you leave. Plenty of street parking. Centrally located near everything; food, lodging & downtown. Check it out.

We dropped by this museum one day when we'd arrived too early for another appointment. What a surprise. Beautifully done. We were surprised to find a docent in the lower floor in WWII dress handing out brochures. Very informative. It ws all so interesting we almost missed our appointment.

Beautiful place and so interesting

Was such a joy to visit this place with so many things to look at. Our docent, Patty, was amazing! So informative and with a great sense of humor. So glad we went here.

A Victorian Gem

By 777VirginiaB777 |

The McHenry Mansion is a beautifully restored Victorian Italianate Mansion of 10,000 square feet. All the furniture are period pieces, with some original furnishings. Tours are given on the half hour starting at 12:30 Sunday through Friday. Last full tour is at 3p.m. Tours begin in the Visitors Center/Gift shop with a 10 minute video.
Total time is about an hour for the video and tour. Well worth a visit and the tours are free! (Donations are accepted)

Love all the old stuff, wish there was more!

By Ing5150 |

Great way to dive into local history. Lots of artifacts. Just wish there was more. Perhaps someone with stories to tell about the displays.

Wonderful restoration

By Jane S |

This house has been restored brilliantly, the furniture and the artefacts in the house have been sourced to reflect the period in which the house was a family home. The guides were very welcoming and very knowledgeable. We would certainly recommend a visit.

You've gotta see this place!

By DonaldYokum |

If you see nothing else in Modesto, you have to see this place! It's a study on how a well-to-do family lived in the Valley, the decor and the furnishings are truly fabulous! You get a good feel on what is was like to make a good life in the Valley. The history of the place is remarkable. The docents are very capable of telling the stories of the place.

Another beautiful mansion

By Gretchen D |

We didn't get to go inside and there were workers repainting the outside, but it was nice to learn a little bit about Modesto's history.

A must-see in Modesto

By Chuck1931 |

A beautifully restored Victorian Mansion on the edge of down-town Modesto. It is a perfect spot for your special event. We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary there a few years ago, and our out-of-town guests were totally impressed with the home.

Historical House....well worth the visit

By Teaqueen |

I lived in Modesto several years before I visited this lovely historical mansion but now I go often! The tour has changed over the years and currently the protocol is to visit the gift shop first where you are shown a short film about the McHenry family. Then a well informed docent will lead you on a tour through the lovely 2 story house. The docents are fabulous and give you lots of background and know their stuff!! The house is gorgeous and each room decorated as in the period of the house. Don't forget to visit at Christmas time when the whole house is decked out for the holidays!!

And the best part? All of this is free!! A donation box is set up at the entrance, but tour etc is all free.

This is a treasure in downtown Modesto. What a beautiful historic home! This home is open to the public and is free. Definitely worth visiting!

Worth seeing!

This is a nicely and accurately restored 130 year old mansion. It is very interesting to see the "comforts" that were in old houses and compare them to what we have today. The docents are very knowledgeable about the history of the building and why certain items are in certain rooms.

a bit of Modesto history

The McHenry Mansion is a beautiful place with an interesting past. The tour guide was excellent and very informative, as she explained the details of the mansion's beautiful interior and exterior, as well as its history. This place is one of very few historical gems remaining in the Modesto area.

Interesting tour and great gift shop

The tour was very informative and entertaining. The mansion was decorated for Christmas and is just beautiful. I did A LOT of my Christmas shopping at the gift shop. Very unique selections and lots of seasonal items. I will be back there after the holidays for any gifts I need.

From another time . . . .

A great tour, friendly docents, nice gift shop. I hadn't been to the Mansion in about 20 years so it was all new to me again! The best part was learning since then that Robert McHenry changed his name from Brewster to get out of a war......so he and I are related through the Brewster line off of the Mayflower. Sad thing tho, the docents wouldn't let me take a family heirloom! But we enjoyed the information and the gorgeous furnishings as well. The short video in the visitors' center was most helpful. After the tour we drove the 6 miles north on McHenry Blvd. to Crawford Rd., turned right, and looked at the original family mansion there. Gorgeous!!! Docents recommended a nice little soup and sandwich shop located just behind the mansion.

A TREASURED AND HISTORICAL RETURN TO THE PAST

By cynthia s |

This tour was a very interesting blast from the past history of the McHenry Mansion. The tour guide was very in tune with the events of this era, plus she added some other insights to its history as well. The intro to its beginning was shown in a short movie- to enhance its the mansion flavor, before the actual tour began. The grounds surrounding the house were well kept, this event of visiting such profoundness was worth the time to make- not to mention their little gift shop too boot. The items in the gift shop were unique and different as the tour itself.

Worth an hour of your time.

Our docents have always been friendly, knowledgeable, and courteous. If you want some local history and sometimes, depending on you docent, personal reminiscences about early Modesto, this is one of the best places to find it.
Enjoy yourself, we have several times.
I have seen several wedding parties use the grounds for pictures. I don't know if there a charge for this.
Great place for 6-years and up to get a glimpse of the past.

Local gem

McHenry Mansion is not huge. It is however, beautiful! A great place to take the kids to give them a piece of history and get them outta the house for a couple of hours. I loved the place when i was a kid. And I still think it is pretty cool. Everyone should check it out sometime while in modesto.

Great tour!

The mansion and the museum with it are very interesting with a lot of old and esoteric memorabilia on display. Glad places like this exist so we can learn about our past

An interesting snapshot of local history

By David_The_Runner |

An interesting old house, with a lot of local history attached. You go to the visitor centre first, just two houses down on 15th Street, where they show you a short video with some of the basic history. Then a volunteer guide takes you to the house and walks you through, highlighting the history of the McHenry family and how it is so intertwined with the history of Modesto. There are no set tour times - they just take you as soon as you've watched the video, so we effectively got a personal tour just for us. We went with Judy and she was very personable and knowledgable, and we really enjoyed her tour. And we had a lovely chat with volunteer Alva back at the visitor centre after the tour. There is no charge for the visit or the tour, so be sure to leave a decent donation.

Beautiful!!

Modesto's Treasure

By EvelynT221 |

A historical landmark. You can take a tour and learn about the people who once lived there. It's also available for rent for special occasions. There's also a Visitor Center / Gift Store located next to the mansion. Many unique items available!

Very informative

The staff is so polite and helpful! Both times we came here, the ladies (tour guides) were very informative. The house isnt huge but it was a very pleasant tour... i loved all the decor around the home and the different era's they represented. I would definitely recommend a visit here if youre in the Modesto area. I cant wait to come back during Christmas time while the house is all decked out with lights and music!

Closed at this time

A very nice museum for our little town and represents the by gone era. It is closed at this time for at least 6 months due to a fire in Dec 2011. Worth a visit when it re-opens. Very nice for dinners down stairs and wine tasting (Gallo, of course)

Pretty cool for school aged kids

The Mansion can feel pretty magical as a kid. Seeing the displays and using imagination are pretty fun to do here. The tour guides are very knowledgeable and can paint a good picture of how life used to be and how the masion has changed. The garden is great. I have been here many times my entire life. Christmas is the best time of year. They also hold weddings on the grounds. Its fun to walk through for all ages.

it was a fun tour of an historic mansion.....I went with my daughter - in law. It was a fun bonding experience for us and we went back a few weeks later with my son so he could experience the tour worth every penny.

Awesome Victorian Restored Home

By Joyce T |

This Victorian home as been completely restored to the time period of 1883 when Robert McHenry had it built so he could be nearer town. The home is beautifully decorated with period furnishings and is immaculately maintained by volunteer docents.

Beautiful & Historic

This is a must see if you've lived here forever or are passing through visiting! The history is amazing and the docents/volunteers are extremely helpful! (Steve was great!)

Beautifully restored mansion and pleasant tour.

Attended a wedding reception on the grounds that included a tour of the mansion. Very interesting tour and history of the home. The weather was on the warm side, but the many trees and beautiful grounds created the perfect backdrop for the celebration. It was a very special celebration.

A lot of local history there. Been thru it many times and have been to many fund raisers at the Mansion. Nice local spot.

A Victorian Masterpiece

By Arthur Paul B |

The mansion was rescued from demolition in 1978 by the late Julio Gallo who turned it over to the City of Modesto for restoration, The community responded and the City now has a wonderful replica of what was a grand house fully furnished with period pieces; some from the McHenry family. It should not be missed.

Lovely historical attraction.

A lovely local historical attraction. Bring the whole family and friends visiting from out of town. Close to downtown shops and restaurants.

History in Modesto

By sshikers |

Ok, I don't remember all the historical facts but I looked out one of the windows and imagined what Modesto may have looked like when the McHenry Mansion was first built? It was also set as as apartments way back when.
The grounds are beautiful and weddings can be held here. Docents give you all the information and tours. I want to attend a tea that is sometimes held there. I'm glad there's some Modesto history still in Modesto.

Fun place to go on a rainy day

I think the Mansion has a lot to offer for the public. It is quite the gem for Modesto. It depicts life in the 1800 in Modesto and has many, many original baubles for people to enjoy.
