So much to see and places to hike. Lots of easy trails for us seniors 😀
This was our 2nd time there and always look forward to returning. Lake Marie and Mirror Lake are a quiet and peaceful getaway from the noisy city.

As a UW grad many years ago, the close proximity to the Rockies, Snowy Range, Medicine Bow National Forest, Vedauwoo, and Fort Laramie up north, and yes the towns of Laramie and Cheyenne were major reasons to attend school during the week and hit the outdoors whenever there was a chance. One hasn't really lived a full life until they've spent time in the west, for example the south eastern corner of Wyoming.

Hang-gliding, para-sailing,rock climbing, hiking, cross country skiing, kayaking, camping, mushroom hunting, fishing, listening to the marmots. The streams are clear, cold and fast as the lakes, filled with fish.

The whole sky is blue with white clouds and the electric storms are short and colorful. The hills are high but invite climbers to be able to see for miles atop their peaks. Trees line valleys, and along the narrow riverbanks. The colors of the plains are antelope tan, sagebrush green, and deep reddish orange.

One cannot help feeling alive in this area of the country.

Picturesque scenery. Bring your hiking boots and camera. Beautiful hiking all year long. Other seasonal activity opportunities as well!

Spent weekend near Lake Owen. Beautiful views especially now that it is changing colors. Many spots to choose from. Atv heaven. Lots of paths. Many moose and elk. Lake had great fishing. A hidden treasure.

East of Laramie, the forest is rolling hills with broken forest of lodgepole pine, sagebrush hillsides, and beaver ponds. it is full of trails for hiking, biking, and even roads for ATVs. The climbing area, Veedauwoo is within the forest as are lots of other piles of rocks for bouldering and scrambling.
To the West, is a much more mountainous area, including Medicine Bow Peak at 12,000'. There is a great deal of great hiking above timberline as well as lots of trails through the forest and around lakes full of fish. It is beautiful in the winter for back country skiing, and it does have its share of snowmobiling.
In some parking areas there is a Forest Service fee, but lots of places are free to access.

Beautiful side trip. Traveling from Nebraska towards Utah and took this side trip. Was well worth the detour off the interstate.

Hiked 3 miles to Reservoir Lake. The hike starts as Gap Lakes Trail at Sugarloaf Recreation Area of Medicine Bow NF. $5 fee per vehicle (or Interagency Recreation Pass) required to park. This is a high elevation trail, starting at 10,000 ft. We needed gloves, sweater and a jacket at 10 AM (late August). By 12 Noon, we were down to T-shirts. Gap Lakes Trail meanders by many alpine lakes, still being fed by last winter's snow patches on the mountain sides. These alpine lakes are surrounded by granite and quartize, which creates roughed, spectacular mountain scenes. We saw about 20 people total, mostly in the first mile. Those further down the trail were backpackers, fisherman and a few other day hikers. Gap Lakes Trail ends at the junction with Quealy Lake Trail but if you turn left here and proceed another 1/8 mile you arrive at Reservoir Lake, which is a fine end point. Take note, when hiking along North Gap Lake, bouldering is required over one short section. We bouldered alongside the Lake on our hike in, then tried a different route back, over the steep rise - staying along the lake was a bit easier. There are no cairns to designate the route here. Other than this section, the trail is a easy-moderate level hike without a significant elevation increase - but like any hike > 10,000 ft you need to be reasonably fit, wear good tread footware, stay hydrated and be prepared for weather changes. This is a much easier hike than Medicine Bow Peak and extremely beautiful. Highly recommended!

I was in Laramie on business and had a free Saturday. We took a drive out to Sentennial for lunch and then on up into the Forest. Stopped at one point for a beautiful hour hike amid small lakes and even a small glacier. Even if you don't get out of the car there are lots of gorgeous views. Definitely was a good way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

By TJ W |

I came snowmobiling with a few friends for the weekend and I have to say the views are stunning! Many different trails to choose from.

By Lo A |

Camping here this summer. Love the area and the different lakes they have. Away from the wind a bit and fresh air is worth the drive up there.

By Fred C |

Trails and backroad with beautiful scenic views, jeep trails hiking trails, wildlife ( antelope mule deer elk and lot of prairie dogs .

By ca j |

I have gone here every year for the last 10 years. The lookout tower is pretty cool, you can see all over the range. I bring my own binoculars also. Even kids get a thrill. The lakes are amazing and crystal clear. Raptors soar over your head while taking a break and eating lunch by the alpine lakes. It's a great place to relax. There is even snow in June, July, and August., We even saw a moose up close and marmots!

By DannyWasserman |

An amazing forest that has so much to offer. We got a tip to go to Medicine Bow national forest and were not disappointed. This scenic drive thru mountains, lakes, plateaus, hills, snow caps, wildlife, was just a terrific place to check out. We loved going to Libby Flats or Mirror Lake. I have so many pictures of this iconic area and can't wait to go back.

By Pete B |

The hike to the top of Medicine Bow Peak is strenuous but does not require any climbing equipment. It is a 4-6 hour round trip depending on your pace. Take plenty of water. The views are spectacular.

By peter W |

Lovely drive to the forest. Visited the information centre before going to the park. Lady was so helpful. Scenery wonderful. Sadly lakes low on water and in some cases dry. Mirror lake was not a mirror due to high winds. Allow 4 hours if you are not hikers.

By Decheek |

Loved the scenery driving up to the mountains. The forest and trails are really beautiful. The forest feels vast and quiet. Really a place you can go to unplug. Really enjoyed ths park . Would love to go back and get to spend a few nights.

By Joani |

I love this forest! There is wildlife galore, and hidden fishing lakes all over the place. Now if we could only figure out how to keep it secluded and not ruin everything like humans do.

By Telkbear |

The Medicine Bow National Forest has a lot to offer a traveler. Great scenery, campgrounds, varied terrain, and Moose! A lot of the forest is closed after the first snow, so definitely contact the ranger station before planning a trip. Also, Wyoming 130 is closed almost all winter.

By StaceyQM |

We drove through the forest on our way from Cheyenne to Laramie on the Happy Jack Road. It was a very nice alternative to I80. We did not have time to explore much of the area on it's own.

By Nancy V |

We have traveled here year after year for maybe 15 years. The mountains, trails, and alpine terrain are breathtaking. We like to hike the Gap Lakes Trail, hike to Lost Lake, Sheep Lake, and the Lookout Lake Trail, to name a few. It is mostly about the lakes! but one should also climb Medicine Bow Peak at least once. Most lakes are 11,000' or lower; Med Bow Peak is 12,000'. Can't wait to go again!

Hiking season is relatively short, depending on your preference for weather. Wildflowers peak in mid-August. A couple trail heads charge for parking but most are still free. Restrooms are available at a few trail heads.

By Shawn D |

Very nice hike to the Peak. Spend about 4 hours walking at a leisurely pace, there and back. Brought a teenager and a dog alone, which slowed the pace. Beautiful views and a hike definitely worth taking.

By Natalie F |

The forest was so natural and beautiful. No cell service, so really made it a great day to escape the busyness of the world. Although, make sure you know where you’re going prior to venturing out due to no cell service!

By amarinesmom226 |

This is an absolutely beautiful drive and a must see for anyone coming through this area. We were in awe! The roads are well maintained and provide numerous pull-offs to get the perfect shot. We will definitely return.

By Arthur L |

This National Forest is so pretty. The green trees, mountains, open fields, water...it's all here, 1st time passing through but hopefully not the last.

By BlueDevilOKC |

The Little Laramie Trailhead, just up from Centennial (WY), provides an excellent jumping off point for low to medium difficulty day hiking. The trail options were great with multiple, crossing loops, allowing us to make changes to our plan en route. The views were also spectacular!

By Tami E |

Great trip but a little more snow would have been nice. The scenery is always beautiful. Lots of pines and rustic views. The snow capped mountains make for some fantastic pictures too.

By Cindy085 |

A great drive across the Snowy Mountain range - gorgeous vistas and lake views. There did seem to be a lot of dead pines - perhaps the beetles? Park service was doing a good job of cleaning out the dead treasure to prevent spread.

By bjhrch |

This is a great trip to make in the snowies in July. Chances are there will still be snow in the crevices and a lot of fun to get out and have a snowball battle.

By Kathy |

It's a great place to hike, picnic, camping or fishing. There're many trials that you can choose for different purposes. Summer or early fall is the best season to go!

By Columbus_CS |

Started hiking in late afternoon at Lake Marie West trailhead. Fascinating views but also strong winds.

By Steve Q |

The 4 hour hike up to the Medicine Bow Peak is downright spectacular. It is rated as difficult and it took us 4 hours but we also found out that the local grade school kids from Kindergarten to grade 6 climb this one every September so it is a very doable hike. The kids take a day to do it and it is quite the scramble for those of short legs as one little fellow told us.

By clarson2016 |

The Medicine Bow Recreation area has something for everyone. You can drive, hike etc. and still get a real feel for this area. Stunning. I didn't expect it to be so beautifully green

By Experience532260 |

A beautiful part of Wyoming. Went to a wedding at St Alban's Chapel and all I wanted to do was spend a full day just hiking around this beautiful mountain area.

By Brian J |

Beautiful. Not as many trees A's in used to but it's. Wyoming still nice and great rock. Formations. Beautiful

By jgriess10 |

About 45 minutes from Laramie, this National Forest is an easy to get to gem. You can park very near beautiful areas and hike to even more beautiful areas. We were impressed with the views for sure. Wasn’t super crowded either which was a bonus.

By Barbara S |

The views are breathtaking. Put down your camera and just take it all in. The forest is beautiful any time of the year.

By Ronald J B |

Forests, lakes. Easy to drive through. But 60 miles from Laramie on I-80. Suggest traveling to 130 from Laramie and taking 130 back to Laramie for dinner

By booapeek |

Medicine Bow National Forest is an unexpected delight in south/central Wyoming. A treasure as a National Byway, the views are breathtaking of the Medicine Bow Range. Camping is somewhat abundant, mostly RV and some tent. Established sites have vault toilets, camp hosts. Hiking is beautiful. Wildlife is always encountered. Lakes have fish. Much history, explore it. Take an extra drive to Saratoga to use paid or free hot springs. Tent season is short- but we go yearly because it is so amazing and peaceful. Have met some wonderful people up there, enjoying the same.

By ki0ki |

Stark scenery at this time of year. End of June. Hot, dry and windy. Be careful in a camper with those large flat sides. They do have some wind screens up to help

By George cassell |

A beautiful hike with spectacular views from the top...a memorable experience!!!we went over quite a bit of snow. The wild flowers were gorgeous and the rocks were Awesome!!!!

By MommaBMiss |

This has to be one of the best kept secrets! This is one of the prettiest places I have ever been. You can hike from mirror lake to take the lakes trail 1.7 miles each way. If you are up for an even bigger adventure, you can continue on up at the Medicine Bow Peak trail from there. It is gorgeous. At the top there is snow. Gorgeous wildflowers and small crowds were a huge plus! We loved it. The drive through alone is worth it!

By Tracey R |

Were here and camped and hiked eleven years ago. Came back to hike Medicine Bow Peak. The view and scenery is breathtaking. We were here during the 3rd week of September. There was some snow cover and the Aspens were bright yellow.

By mykapone |

Stopped by on our way from Denver to Grand Tetons - it was gorgeous. The snow was plowed off the roads, but there was still a lot of snow to see in June. In fact, many of the paths were still shut down. I understand why they call it the Snowies. The rivers were flowing well. It was so picturesque. This was possibly my favorite scenic route along the way. If you are in the area, taking the scenic route won't leave you disappointed. Just keep your camera handy. We visited the are just southwest of Laramie.

By Margaritaville1 |

Beautiful long hiking, fishing, and camping for the novice to experienced outdoorsy adventure seekers.

By karedmn |

Driving thru the forest to see the trees changingg color is beautiful.
The air is crisp and cool, just a wonderful drive! The lakes are true blue and picture perfect. Walking around on the trails is awesome and picturesque. Seeing the natural wildlife is gorgeous and inspiring.
All worth the natural beauty of the Snowy Range Forest.

By Debra S |

We hiked to the top of Medicine Bow Peak Sunday - despite the mountains looking snow covered as we approached the area, all hiking trails were clear. We did the longer trail from Lake Marie up the southern slope. After the initial 1/2 mile climb, the hiking was gradual through some open fields and rocky scrambles. The last mile increased the altitude and the last few hundred yards to the top was a challenge - but totally worth it. We found a place to shelter from the wind and have a sandwich on our way back down. we both highly recommend the hike and would do it again (on a less windy day!)

By heidilore76 |

Absolutely amazing views. If you are near here, I strongly recommend taking a drive through here and simply taking in the scenary. Well worth it and very spiritual!

By Rita M |

Loved the Medicine Bow Bike Trail!! We did 40 miles round trip. It was a smooth ride & very enjoyable. Rode on a Monday so we had the trail to ourselves. Highly recommend!

By mcascio10 |

The snowies have something for every skill level. You can view by car or hike the Backcountry. Be sure to stop by the ranger station for a map and suggestions.
We had a short hike, in the snow, to a Miner's cabin from the 1880's. We picnicked by Mirror Lake and hiked around Maria Lake.

By LostInColorado |

Late June . . . most of the snow will be gone, right? Apparently not.

That being said, the area is beautiful, even if not fully accessible "early season."

To make the most of your visit, stop at the Forest Service information center just west of Centennial, Wyoming.

Activities (when the snow limits such things): 1) Park by Lake Marie and follow the asphalt trail up to Mirror Lake. When we were there the access roads were closed, but were occasionally visible - we were able to "follow" the road and then hike a bit up above the lakes. 2) East Fork of the Little Laramie River - multiple loop trails through verdant pine forest with frequent views of the river. 3) Sugarloaf Recreation Area - the road was blocked by a 16' snowfield, but we were still able to hike in to Libby & Lewis Lakes. Well worth the trip - not just the lakes, but views through the "Gap" all the way to the north. We were able to follow the Gap Lakes trail for a bit, until it became a stream that disappeared into willows and another large snow field.

We'll be back "in season" to take advantage of an amazing trail system that visits enumerable lakes.

By CougLiz |

Definitely worth the time to drive up to Centennial and over the pass if you are in Laramie. Beautiful lakes and lots of hiking opportunities. We wish we'd had more time to do more hiking.

By Daniel M |

What can I say a national forest is always a spectacular place to visit. Nature preserved for future generations. Wonderful.

By AliceDilts |

We came here in April but access is limited due to the weather. I would come back in nicer weather to check it out. I plan to bring a decent camera with me though!

By Fisher327 |

It is hard to describe the beauty of this National Forest. There are many, many miles of Forest Service roads (some better than others). There are many dry camping spots available but most require reservations. Wildlife abounds- deer, elk, moose, hawks and bald eagles just to name a few. Rob Roy is a great spot to fish and traveling through the forest to the Platte river is a great and beautiful trip. Watch for Big Horn Sheep in the Platte Valley

By Mickeydude1972 |

Excellent area with scenic views and several lakes. The hikes are not crazy hard but can be a struggle at times.

By lizlesliephotos |

Visiting a friend at her cabin in Laramie WY the beginning of Sept 2016. We spent a day viewing the wonders of Medicine Bow National Forest. I had been there once before and will go there again. The mountains are so breathtaking. As a photographer I did not put my camera down much that is for sure. We had to cut our hike short do to weather. So we stopped at a bar and grill in called Beartree Tavern and Cafe in Centennial, WY. Very good veggie burger! And great pizza among other good food. Centennial is a tiny little tourist town, you will love it!!

At night the stars are so close that you can see many many more than at sea level. It is a wonderland there, great energy. We met nice people as we always do when we visit the national parks and forests.

By wecanoe |

After vacationing in the mountains of Colorado, we decided to check out this area of Wyoming. We were so glad we did! The scenery was spectacular from the road. I can only imagine the hiking trails! We drove through mid-week, and there were not many people in the area. We were not impressed with the camping, however. We were looking for a place to camp and found several of the campgrounds to be closed when we got to them. One was open but completely deserted. Lack of funding is evident.

By Lisa H |

Medicine Bow was absolutely gorgeous! We traveled on motorcycles throughout Colorado and the scenery and terrain was totally different but beautiful! I would highly recommend this drive if you have never been.

By margaret w |

Took a drive. Very scenic. Mountains not as big as the Tetons but looked just like them. It is about a 50 drive one way. There are a lot of places to stop and hike. There is camping and cabins in the park. It rained and snowed today Sept 3. There was snow on the ground. The trees smelled fantastic like that evergreen smell after a rain. Small lakes are all over the place. I drove into the park from Laramie. Absolutely beautiful drive.

By Jennifer L |

We stopped many times to see crystal clear lakes, mountains capped with snow in the summertime, and even a moose with her baby! Pristine and beautiful scenery everywhere you look. Keep going further past the Medicine Bow and you get to a town with a natural hot spring you can wade into!

By springsgirlColorado |

What a pleasant drive through a beautiful area. Even the wind farm was wonderful to see. We were on Happy Jack Road (route 210) and thoroughly enjoyed the drive from Cheyenne to Laramie.

By greenroche |

Exceptional beauty for such a small area! Due to the time of the year however, many of trails were closed or not fully assessible. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed what I was able to get to.

By Richard F |

If you live near Laramie or your traveling south maybe to Denver and you have the time take a side trip to visit this area. There are many people who use this area for winter sports but, if you just want to see a gorgeous area take the drive. We were heading to Denver and saw this on the map and decided to take a side trip. It was very much worth the extra time. When you get to the peak at 12,000 ft you even see a plaque that commemorates a plane crash there in 1955. We visited in June and there was still a lot of snow on the mountains.

By Mel L |

Medicine Bow National Forest is a wonderful park for families to camp, hike and get back in touch with nature. There is quite a bit of wildlife such as moose, deer and elk so pack the binoculars and camera.

By Crystal M |

We visited this area after we broke down in laramie. It was a pleasant drive with lots of beauty. We even got to hike and touch snow in August. Nice place to visit.

By Meander563698 |

As I was alone for the day and not from the area I decided to drive to Centennial from Laramie and then up to the National forest. It was such a beautiful drive. I saw a moose along the road eating and went up the snowy mountain top. Just a delightful day.

By Carol B |

Medicine Bow is absolutely beautiful. Be sure to stop at the many look out sights. There are lots of picture opportunities. It is usually quite windy! MAKE SURE TO TAKE A COAT WITH YOU. If you like hiking or mountain lakes, you'll love Medicine Bow. Roads are closed in the winter.

By JetMecGirl |

The Rangers were great and informative, the turn outs and viewing areas were great, and the fact that there was still snow on the ground on the high peaks in June was a treat.

By pjeltravel |

Fabulous views..this was on our way to Laramie and we are so glad we went that way. The glaciers and Lake Marie were beautiful. Wish we had more time to do some hiking there.

By CJ Shooter |

Absolutly beautiful drive thru pass but tuff with a heavy load trailer. We haul 44 ft 3-horse LQ aluminum Sooner and we got slowed down alot going over pass but it was do-able. The NORTH FORK camp is nice, has VERY nice road to get to it but tuff for big rigs to park, but with patience some spots are doable. Along the way to the camp there are several spots to camp in nat forrest where no fee or amenities are... We prefer those spots, they were nice, on creek, and we saw a moose. Must be wildlife prepared!
We will go back. Not far from Laramie.

By jjwinters3 |

This was a great trip. The ride through the Snowy Range Scenic Byway is breathtaking. Great views and many nice easy hikes for families. Also, many nice picnic areas for families to enjoy.

By doug |

Recently visited the Medicine Bow mountains outside Laramie. The drive on route 130 is great. The amazing vistas go on forever. We were driving in a rainstorm while on either side were bright blue skies with beautiful clouds. Stopped at the ranger station the ladies working were wonderful. Had a great time talking to them and getting directions. At the top of the mountain the lakes, snow, sky made unforgettable pictures. Crowds were not bad, hiking a little limited due to the snow but very worthwhile taking in the views. Amazing area.

By merionvw |

We drove the Snowy Range Scenic Highway through the Medicine Bow National Forest from Saratoga to Laramie. We got amazing views of glaciated mountains and scenic views. Unexpected and much less touristy than the Rockies. Beautiful

By GoPlaces709102 |

Beautiful spots around every bend. Tranquil clear lakes, perfect backdrops for photos and the freshest air in the country.

By aztraveler515 |

Beautiful area; well worth a day drive. Wouldn't want to do it at night due to wildlife. Wish we had had enough time for hiking.

By Joy B |

We did this drive in mid-October and it was really a beautiful surprise. One of the locals told us we had to do this drive and I'm so glad we did. We took a picnic lunch and just enjoyed all of the beautiful scenery, birds and even deer :-) It is not a very long drive but it took us several hours due to stopping and taking pictures and doing little hikes. Truly breathtaking! I'd highly recommend!

By KBN1966 |

Great place to visit as long as you have outdoorsy teens. Easy drive from Laramie. Beautiful and relaxing.

By gwk100 |

Wife and I camped in the Medicine Bow National Forest on our 1st night in Wyoming after traveling 1100 miles from Texas. It was late October and had the whole Campground to ourselves. We got about 2 inches of snow that night and the whole area was covered in White the next morning. A stunning site. Plan to go back in June for another night in the Mountains.

By Larry917 |

This area should be a national park! There are three non-contiguous parts: Vedauwoo (Pole Mountain), the Snowy Range (Medicine Bow Mountains), and the Sierra Madre. Each of these regions offers very different scenery. The drive through the Snowy Range southwest of Laramie is breathtaking. The hike up to Medicine Bow Peak (12,000 feet!) on the West Marie Lake to Lakes trails offers absolutely stunning views of the entire area as well as the peak itself. Probably one of the best loop trails I have ever hiked.

By pfefmeister |

Great drive up and down highway 130, with multiple stops along the way for scenic alpine lakes. There are quite a few trailheads along the routes, but, we only made a few stops. Definitely, a worthwhile scenic drive if you are in the area.

By sueonthego1 |

We recently tent camped for one night in the Willow campground. We were lucky to find a site with plenty of level ground that would accommodate two tents. There are no tent pads or cleared ground, so just make do and avoid ants, rocks, etc. The drive along Highway 130 was BEAUTIFUL. Plenty of snow tucked back in trees and in the summit area made for gorgeous pictures. Unfortunately the picnic area by Mirror Lake was still covered with snow.

By Pdonatyandkids |

We were very excited to hike Medicine Bow. However, our research was not through. When we arrived there was still 15 to 20 feet of snow pack (Memorial day weekend). We still got out with our hiking poles and walked around the area we could. Really majestic. The lake was still frozen solid and a few hearty locals were ice fishing. Prior to hitting the spot we stopped at the rangers stations which was very helpful as she pointed us to other places in the area which we could actually hike. We plan to hopefully return to the future to hike the main trail. The experience with the snow is one for the story book and was worth the stop.

By James C |

The drive from Centennial to Saratoga is beautiful year round when the road is open. The road is closed during the winter and spring. The Medicine Bow National Forest offers excellent opportunities for site seeing (Lake Marie is a must), fishing and hiking. The views from Medicine Bow Peak are awesome; however, it is a strenuous hike to the top and should only be done in late July or August due to the snow pack near the top. The columbines are in full bloom in mid to late July along the trail from Mirror Lake to Lewis Lake. I am not aware of any other spot in southeast Wyoming where they grow. To quench your thirst, there are three very good microbreweries in Laramie.

By Ties10 |

We drove through Medicine Bow on our way to the Grand Tetons/Yellowstone. It didn't take long, maybe an hour or two, because we stopped a few times to get pictures. The lakes/ponds here are gorgeous. We stopped at Libby Flats to enjoy the view.

By EcoArtTraveler |

Admittedly, we were there on a postcard-perfect day, but what beautiful hike the "Lakes" loop is, trailhead at Mirror Lake. One beautiful lake/pond after another, strung together by boggy areas with a rich plant community. Dramatic high mountain views. Don't forget that air is thin (over 11,000 feet at the end of the first 1.8-mile section) and you need more than usual sunscreen, water, and rest stops along the way.

By K M |

Beautiful and as impressive a drive as Trail Ridge Road or Pikes Peak. The aspens were a beautiful yellow and worth a fall visit.

By Wrldtravel_13 |

There are plenty of trails for dayhikers as well as backpackers. Lots of lakes and streams so backpackers do not need to carry much water.

By Mzznoah |

We enjoyed exploring here for several hours this morning. My husband was disappointed there was still so much snow pack that he could only make it safely up the trail he had hoped to hike to the top of a peak- but Mother Nature dropped 12 ft of snow a few weeks ago and it hasn't quite melted. Still it was a beautiful way to spend the day. It was also fun counting antelope on the way up. I think we made it past 50.

By oklambsrus |

This was a beautiful drive. We drove through in the morning and there wasn't very many cars on the road. We made several stops to take pictures. Lots of pretty flowers and clear streams. Even snow!

By zJustinScott |

Ha ha... I wish I could have this forest to myself, but I guess there is room to share. This is a hidden gem of Wyoming. But there is a lot of remote areas so come prepared, and mostly no cell phone service. So if you're looking for a true remote get-away then you've found the spot. Be careful....

By John O |

make sure you see the snowies lakes and small towns, a neat area not all fancied up. beautiful and clear.

By Japedo |

I highly recommended fitting this into any trip itinerary if you're in the area. The views are stunning. Stop if you can and take a small walk down to Lake Marie, just beautiful.

By Todd G |

This is a wonderful place, great scenic drive through the mountains. I think the views of the mountains near Lake Marie are just jaw dropping. Lots of opportunities to hike and camp.
You can rent atvs or snowmobiles in Albany to explore the area, or just hike the many trails.
Lots of wildlife in the area, we have seen moose, elk, bear, deer, foxes, mountain lions, antelope, to name a few.
There are lots of lodging choices, and good places to eat around. You can just pass through or I would recommend to stay a couple of days and enjoy.

By Dmlsun |

We drive up to Medicine Bow Forrest when we visit Laramie. It is a great place to take gorgeous photos, hike, picnic and simply enjoy nature. We especially like Lewis Lake area, Lake Marie and Mirror Lake areas. There are parking and picnic spots, rest rooms around and hiking trails. The scenic views are breathtaking!

By Ody G |

Yes, wonderful, virtually deserted outdoors in Wyoming. In the same time it takes you to et to lovely but horribley overcrowded Rocky Mtn National Park, you can get to many wonderful, lovely, almost deserted outdoor places in Wyoming. When you drive along the road through the Medicine Bow, you feel like you are on top of the world. Get off the road and take a few hikes. In the winter, the cross-country skiing is superb..

By Guadalupe H |

This national forest is no just beautiful but excellent for hiking on the summer but great for cross country, snow shoe etc. can wait to go back!!!

By Debra S |

You can do a 4 to 7 mile hike or more to get to the top of the 12,013' peak. Trails were well marked. The lakes were beautiful. Big sky. Big piles of rock! A challenge the last mile but well worth the effort. Don't start at Marie Lake West - go to Mirror Lake Trail head to avoid a paved walk ... did not add anything to the hike. No parking fees at the trailhead. Find a map online as the ranger stations are not always open. Trails were OK marked as long as you knew where you were going.

By Amy F |

We were staying at the Vee Bar Ranch nearby and this was one of the hiking trips they took us to. The van ride was wonderful because there is no bad view. Medicine Bow is just simply gorgeous. We stopped at Lake Marie and enjoyed strolling around the lake and taking in the view. A Must See when you are near Laramie!

By Todd G |

Lots of great views, great hiking for all levels. Lots of wildlife to watch, Aspens in the fall, lots of snow in the winter. Stop by the Friendly Store if your on the eastside for a map. Lots of things to do, camping, fishing, canoeing, hiking, biking. We hiked up Medicine Bow peak this trip, awesome views from 12,000+ Ft.
Stay for awhile, go for a walk, plenty of wildlife, I have seen plenty of Moose and Elk, deer and foxes. I have seen the tracks of plenty other big game- bears, mountain goats, and big cats. There are some rock roads to explore and can get rough but nothing most 4x4/ crossovers cant handle, watch out for rocks if you take a car in there.

By Teresa M |

We took our 4 kids, ages 6-17 on a backpacking trip along the Alpine Lakes loop (11 miles). The scenery was stunning. There were majestic mountain views and serene, peaceful alpine lakes and meadows. We camped at a lovely site at Shelf Lake 2. We passed numerous alpine lakes full of trout. We saw 3 moose and passed many elk tracks. Bring your bug spray- the mosquitoes were thick in early August. Weather varies from hot and sunny midday to hail storms and cold at night. Be prepared for any weather. This is a beautiful place!

By Isée B |

This national forest provides absolutely stunning landscapes. Either lots of access to wildlife and mountains from easy path to more adventurous hikes.

We loved this area! Just as scenic as Rocky Mountain National Park but far less overrun. Gorgeous scenery. We will be back again!

By Hearts1 |

The Medicine Bow is gorgeous. Is a place of great solitude and expanse. My wife kept saying where are all the people. As opposed to the huge crowds in the Rocky Mountain National Park the Medicine Bow is beauty without people.

Be sure to get out of your car and take some of the short trails. Within a quarter of a mile your next to Alpine Lakes and Senior you will never forget

If you're in the neighborhood, I highly recommend a side trip along the Snowy Range Road. The geology, plants, trees and animal life are outstanding. I saw a mama moose and two young ones, and an elk cow with two yearlings, in addition to marmots, and antelope down below.

By Sandy M |

Made a day drive up to Medicine a Bow from vacation in CO. We want to go back. It was in May and still pretty cool with high winds. Can't wait to go three for vacation.

By Simon H |

Stunning scenery and awesome driving roads make this a must see if you are around this way. Look out for the wildlife.

By Essexoldgirl |

We were staying in Laramie, and decided to drive up to the snowy mountains there was still loads of snow up there and it was beautiful we drove over the top then back we stopped at loads of places it was extremly cold but definately worth it.went.

By David J |

Even though this park is not one of the famous ones in Wyoming, it is well worth a visit. I was traveling from the west to Laramie and it was easy to turn south on RT 130 toward Saratoga, WY, and then taking it east across the Snowy Range of Medicine Bow. What a scenic trip! I just had to keep stopping all along the way to take pictures. I particularly enjoyed Lake Maria and Mirror Lake, with the magnificent rock cliffs behind. This is a natural place that I will return to!

By Jon H |

Awesome views and not overcrowded. Be sure to take raincoats in the summer, a shower can come up anytime. One of the best kept secrets in the national system. Will definitely return again.

By James and Debra |

Medicine Bow is a beautiful park. We were able to see a lot of large deer, elk, moose, and even a owl. But I didn't do my research on this park. The section I was looking for was not in Laramie so I decided to find the other section which was over 1 1/2 hours away. By the time we got there, it was getting dark. I ended up trying to find the closest gas station and hotel and ended up in some little town where the gas station and motel was closed but I was able to get gas. We finally ended up in Craig Colorado after 3 1/2 hours. We weren't prepared on how far the towns were away from each other. I would love to go back but better prepared.

By OffGridWanderlust |

This is a wonderful place to bring friends and family. Experience the great outdoors with rock climbing, hiking, camping, and exploring. There is some cell phone reception in various areas of the park but for the most part you’re totally off grid so be prepared to really camp!

By Sspropel |

The park is beautiful. There are several mountain lakes that you can either camp at or just stop to enjoy! High mountain backdrops, the Snowy Mountains are very beautiful. There are vault toilets in many locations, excellent hiking and dry camping locations.

By CO2_traveller |

This place is so close to Fort Collins and northern Colorado, but it appears that many never make it there. It's very beautiful, and many of the sights are right on the main road where everyone can see without hiking. 2 hours from Fort Collins and you can stop at Laramie on the way. There are many walking trails. The top of the pass is lovely. Mirror Lake and Lake Marie are gorgeous. On a hot day, it will still be somewhat cool here.

By Masondixon71 |

Pick your day wen the weather is fine in Summer and head to Medicine Bow. I love coming at different times of the year but we are generally in Wyoming in July and during hunting Season. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a coat as it can get cold even in Summer. A must see if you are visiting the Laramie Region of Wyoming.

By TherealVman |

We did not even scratch the surface of this gem of a National Forest. Do yourself a favor and make time to explore. This time of year, snow limited what we were willing to explore on foot. Will be back this summer.

By ckatzzz |

Didn't have time to stop but the views are tremendous from the road. Great place to travel and site see.

By lwdndvr |

Just came from a full day of riding our 2 seater RZR in the Medicine Bow National Forest. We wanted to see how badly the fire's of this Summer marred the scenery. We were so pleasantly pleased & surprised how beautiful it still is. That is SOLELY because of all the fire fighting heroes that put their lives at risk to quickly get that huge fire umd control & out TWICE! Because of inclement weather
Don't be afraid to visit, it's as beautiful as ever.

By Dmlsun |

Definitely worth the drive, scenic area for views of the surrounding mountains. We went in June and there was still snow on the ground up in the higher elevations.

By Linda C |

I LOVE this area. We lived in Laramie and spent a great deal of time here. We came though and stopped at a trail and went for a walk. Everything was great until we encountered a couple with dogs that were not leashed. My daughter and I stepped well off the trail and were waiting for them to pass when one of their dogs came growling and barking, baring its teeth at me. I tried to stop it but could not and it went after my daughter. Dogs are to BE LEASHED! If you cannot follow the rules, stay home!!!

By Jen2000M |

A local tried to explain to us where locals hike, because it's the most beautiful, but we hiked the regular route to Medicine Bow Peak anyway. It was breathtaking, both because it was amazingly gorgeous, and because the last part was basically a mile straight up to 12,000 feet. We chose not to cross a sketchy snow field, and so only got near the peak instead of right at it. But it was not to be missed!

By ShanHooper |

We stumbled on the Snowy Range and Medicine Bow by accident and probably would have pushed on thru. So Grateful we Didn't!! Stunning Views, Quiet Trails and Amazing Wildlife. If in or around Laramie...Medicine Bow is a MUST See!!

By Kristin V |

Drive trough Medicine Bow on our way from Lander to Laramie. It's a wonderfull drive with lots of views, small lakes, pit-stops.There are several parking-lots with amazing spots. At the top there is a special area with bonocoulars to have an amazing view over the Rocky Mountains. Not to miss when you're in the area!

By Bill L |

The east portion of the Medicine Bow National Forest lies between Laramie and Cheyenne so is easily accesible in the summer time. Interesting place to visit, hike, camp and spend time.

By Corey E |

This was on my list of places to visit on our vacation out west this year. Was so grateful for a sunny and 60 some degree day to enjoy this stunning place! Stopped on our way to Laramie. Love the history on how it got its name and you will not find a mediocre view. Peaceful and serene. a Photographers dream!

By Cshastry2 |

Medicine Bow National Forest has a long history. Around 8,000 years back when ancestors of the Plains inhabited this area. The Northern Arapaho, Oglala Sioux, Northern Cheyenne, Eastern Shoshone and the White River Utes all frequented the area. They utilized the forest to gather the prime “mountain mahogany” wood they liked to use when making bows. The soothing mineral hot springs along the banks of the North Platte River provided a welcome place to “make medicine” to cure their ills and hold ceremonial powwows. Must See... MIRROR LAKE!!! Nowhere on the Globe!

By teridGA |

Just WOW!!! We drove through Centennial and up to Saratoga- a lovely little town. The views were breathtaking!!! Everywhere you look, nature at its most beautiful. On our way back, we stopped at Lake Marie. There are no words to describe how spectacular the views are. Even in August, there was a bit of snow on the mountains. So serene and peaceful.

By Tonya S |

I am not an outdoorsy person at all unless there is a beach or a theme park involved, but even I can't deny how breathtaking the sky is, or how you can see for miles and miles and miles. Living on the east coast I get used to trees blocking everything and the sky is like a ceiling there, but out here it is like a dome. Do I want to live in it forever? No, but if you like the outdoors or just natural landscapes you gotta come to the west.

By Martha |

The views are amazing. The photos here do it justice. We drove the Snowy Range Scenic Byway, stopped at the Libby Flats Observation area for 360 degree views of the Medicine Bow Mountains, the Sierra Madre Mountains, Mt. Zirkel Wilderness, Rocky Mountain National Park, and the Laramie Mountains.

By Terri D |

I had never been through this forest before and I can't believe what I was missing! This is a wonderful place to visit and, seemingly, a well-kept secret. It reminded me of the Smoky Mountains, only higher...which means cooler in temperature, chances to see snow year-round and just as easy to navigate. Has a more "homey" feel than the taller ranges, but still has the air quality (like GoPlaces says), probably due to the lack of major metropolitan areas due southwest of the region.

By XXXXXVXXXXX |

Beautiful park with incredible vistas and some great hiking. The area around Mount Medicine Bow is especially stunning.

By Stephen E |

Uniquely beautiful. Not as grand as north western WY. but plenty aw inspiring views of the Snowy Range. Head west out of Laramie to Centennial, then up into the mountains. The rock faced peaks of the Snowy Range are impressive to view. The real gem is all the recreational opportunities. If you like to fish, hike up to the base of the peaks and fish one of the many small ponds/lakes. We enjoyed high alpine hikes, mountain biking and wildlife viewing. Elk and mule deer were not hard to find. It can get cold here at night even in mid summer.

By Vincent L |

I'm a little too old now to do the hiking that I would have liked to do, but there's still a lovely scenic drive through the Snowy Mountains. The visitor stations at each end of the drive a likely to be closed unless you are there on a weekend. On the other hand, there are a fair number of rustic bathrooms along the road. The excitement comes when you approach the sheer silverish cliffs along 2 lakes. It's very similar -- although smaller in scope -- to the Grand Tetons...and you can get up real close. Keep in mind that around this part of the drive you are at an elevation of around 12,000 feet...so you'll feel it. If you drive the western portion of the scenic byway you'll see a number of small lakes and ponds, and although there are no remains, you can stop at a camping area that was a POW camp during World War II. The whole drive back and forth can take as little as 2 h ours, but you'll want to stop along the lakes/main cliffs to take some photos and walk around on some of the easy trails.

By christn778 |

Wonderful place to go when you need to relax and get away. Air is very friesh, many opportunities to explore and hike, highly recommend for a day away.

By Movie M |

The temperature dropped about 20 degrees once at the top and was quite windy.... but the views were amazing! There are several lakes along the drive with beautiful photo opportunities. A few areas to stop, walk, hike, explore. Don't take the long way around to avoid the mountain.... go this route. The views are awesome and you will not be disappointed. Believe the roads highest elevation on about 10, 700'.

By ang61660 |

The Snowy Range Mountains west of Laramie are some of the most beautiful in Wyoming. Fish, hike, camp or drive over the range to the hot pools in Saratoga.

By 902lmm |

liked all the wild flowers, mountains, streams, rivers, lakes, and wildlife...we saw a moose and it's calf! Had first fly fishing experience and that was fun! Too bad about 60% of trees are dying due to beetle.

By cynthiav176 |

Love all the Wyoming mountain ranges, and enjoyed my first trip up into the Medicine Bow NF. I would sometime like to go earlier in the year and see more snow, but the sheer rock walls are impressive. Very much cooler than the lowlands.

By MarriedLady2014 |

It was more beautiful than the pictures, great 2 days, sunny and 70's till you reached the higher elevations. We made snowballs in shirt sleeves. We loved Mirror Lake and Lake Mariei, so clean and pristine!

By roadtripwoman |

We drove the Byway Monday 9/25/17. On Sun. 9/24/17, an early season storm came through Wyoming and the Snow Range Byway and there was at least 6" of snow on the ground. By 11AM the roads were clear and it was partly sunny. We have driven a lot of scenic roads in the West and this was one of the best and the snow just made it even more dramatic. Will definitely come back here.

By Beth W |

the drive into the Medicine Bow National Forest is sensational. The view changes around each corner, so take time to pull off at the viewing turnouts. late fall is a great time to make this trip as there is almost no traffic and the aspens are bright with color. do take warm clothes as the temperature can be quite a bit cooler than in town.

By NewMexicoSilverqueen |

This is another of those fabulous national forests you've never heard of! We spent two days camping here and it is a gorgeous location. The drive across route 130 is filled with breathtaking views and several historic spots - a CCC camp which morphed into a WWII POW camp and the site of a UAL crash over 50 years ago - right into the side of a mountain! Well worth the time to visit.

By Michael M |

Took a drive through Medicine Bow on our way to the Medicine Bow Rail Trail Bike route. Beautiful and peaceful.

By ncftx |

We drove from Laramie to Saratoga through Medicine Bow and stopped to hike at the Visitor Center. The road through the forest is so scenic and offers many spots to pull off for hikes, camping or just viewing. Lots of wildlife, wild flowers, little traffic, few houses/ranches but beautiful views at every turn. Definitely a highlight of our trip.

By b-n-wm-n |

This was our first visit to this area of the country and we were blown away by the beauty. We visited during an unusually warm week in September. Bright clear skies, short sleeved shirts. Amazing terrain and vistas around every bend.

By Dennis |

We hiked to the Medicine Bow Peak from Lewis lake. The view was great most part of the hike. It was our first trip to Wyoming. We were in northern Colorado visiting family and drove up to Wyoming only for this hike. It was well worth the drive and hike. Medicine Bow Peak is not as tall as the 14ers in Rocky Mountain National Park, but the scenery is no less than RMNPs. Remember $5 cash for park fee.

By Karmin J |

We spent an afternoon in the forest. The rock formations are fascinating. It was so peaceful - we loved it.

By MNPeach |

National forests really are underrated treasures, often practically unknown compared to national parks. Mirror Lake and Lake Maria were, for me, a couple of highlights of this beautiful forest and very easy to access.

By Todd H |

Great rolling hills. Rustic when taking Happy Jack, 210 freeway. Not many cars on Happy Jack so really scenic.

By Mary S |

Visiting Medicine Bow on a motorcycle trip. Riding through Snowy Range Pass was a highlight. Plenty of places to pull of the road to take pictures and enjoy natures awesome beauty. Many trail heads and camping areas available too. Lake Marie and Mirror Lake were especially breathtaking beauty. If you are riding motorcycle use caution to pick a weather appropriate day. Snowy Pass closes in the winter season.

By Leslie W |

Amazing views throughout the whole year and great place to hike and take pictures! Go before November as roads will be closed throughout the winter until the snow melts in the spring!

By GoAwayBear |

We drove past Medicine Bow National Forest when we were on our way to WYO (Laramie). The rock formations are amazing. After helping our son get settled in his college quarters, we decided to picnic at Vedauwoo and drove around Happy Jack road. If you are in the area, this is a not-to-miss place.

By chey_baybee |

I have hiked, camped, and snow-shoed in this area and never get tired of it. So many different trails to hike and hills to climb. Do check the weather before you go, the road may be closed, or the winds may be too high to enjoy your time outdoors.

By Kim W |

Sad to see the beetles have taken a good part of the trees, still a nice drive with scenic pull outs. Mirror lake is with stopping for.

By Staci T |

Stunning scenery! It snowed the night before and snowed while we were visiting. Looked like a winter fairy tale! Didn't have appropriate shoes for snow hiking. Next time!

By EddieColorado |

Don't expect creature comforts. But if you're into beauty and solitude this is the place. Just be prepared for weather changes and some level of independence and some self sufficiency.

By Marline2013 |

This jewel near Laramie is a perfect place for a relaxing hike, some trout fishing or just plain enjoying the scenery. My daughter and I took her German Shepherd for a hike and we were blown away by the beautiful views just a short walk from the parking area. The drive up to the top is gorgeous too...especially in the fall when the aspen are at their peak. Nice place for a few hours of reflection and a picnic.

By rjrober |

Really beautiful drive through Medicine Bow NF. Campgrounds are full on the weekend, at least on the Laramie side of the Snowy Range.

By montanapescado |

Gorgeous mountain scenery here with trails suitable for hiking, biking, or ATVing. The roads are good for scenic drives or motorcycling. Weather can be harsh and change without warning, so come prepared. Best of all, it doesn't have the crowds like the mountains in Colorado.

By Blusplyr |

I wasn't prepared for how beautiful this National Forest, and the Snowy Mountains, is. Great place to spend time outdoors in beautiful scenery.

By Megs015 |

Such a beautiful place! We went on a couple of hikes that were awesome. We always go to Colorado to hike & camp, but decided to give this place a try as it is a good half way point for our family in Colorado and us in Nebraska. It was wonderful! The scenery is unbelievable and there are way less people! We have already made plans to come back.

By DM1905 |

Less than an hour from Laramie, the national forest is a must see for hikers and other outdoors lovers. We took the loop trail to Medicine Bow Peak (clockwise) and it was fantastic; the views were amazing and the hike was a challenge. We were happy we brought our poles for crossing a large snowfield and coming down the steep trail near the peak. Get early for parking in summer as the lot filled up quick, as did parts of the trail.

By ItalianChicken1 |

The hubby and I went skiing and love going back time after time. The staff are very pleasant and helpful up there. Great for beginners.

By floridasquid |

Spectacular views of mountains for 100 mines in many directions. Visitor center staff helpful and friendly.
Cute little gift store at Centennial entrance.

By Lourdes H |

Fit this scenic byway into your trip plans, this was so beautiful, don't miss it.
It was a little wet and cold but the hike's were still good.

By Innga |

I have been to Laramie at least a dozen times, but until one of my daughters brought me here, this gem was undiscovered. It is as beautiful as Lake Jenny in the Tetons. One daughter will argue it is more beautiful. A real hidden gem

By 1hairleft |

Great place to walk and enjoy the scenery. Trails wind down next to the creek and up around and through the mountains.

By Arkybob75 |

I never thought would have thought that the views would have been so fantastic. Absolutely beautiful. Too bad we didn't go further (past the look-out point). We are told it is so much better. Should have researched it more. Make sure you go all the way to Mirror Lake!!

By Leslie C |

Perfect for quiet solitude after the crowds at Yellowstone and Grand Tetons. Tall beautiful mountains: the Snowy Range. Beautiful lake Marie. Parking and bathroom available!

By Leslie R |

The Snowy Mountains are one of my favorite places anywhere!! Breathtaking views and hardly any people to share the beauty with!! You can hike without seeing another person (during the week). You can see wildlife if you are observant! Worth the beautiful drive with minimal traffic, unlike some of the other more populated areas. Even snow in the summer on the 12,000 peaks.

By Andrei C |

This is a great forest to hike in. I went for a day hike and could not get enough of the scenery. Wildlife abounds and can be seen easily. We had elk come all the way to the walking path and they were not scared of hikers. Awesome!

By Bfreeze67 |

Gorgeous views!! We rode our motorcycles and had the best day ever. It is so beautiful here. Great ride!

By ARFX |

We hiked on many beautiful, wild flower laden trails. Lots of free parking and trail access is quite easy. Trails are well-maintained.

By hootmc |

It was a decent drive from Laramie, very gorgeous! Was super windy on the day we went, even being in mid-July wish I had taken a jacket.

By Corbin C |

Beautiful place off the regular paths. Lots of snow still there in Mid June. Will definitely look to visit again next time we are in this area. Not a bad drive even if you had an RV.

By jhvcpa |

We saw lots of wildlife and views. Had a lot of fun going through the park. All of the road we drove were dirt and passable by car. Different land than were we are from out east.

By Rica R |

I spend as much time here as possible. We camp and hike and fish. It's like being in a totally different world.

By Rachael X |

Camping in high wind is trick. Either you need a very good tent our a hardsided camper if you use Brooklyn Lake.

By jesse o |

Between Saratoga and Centennial, one of my favorite roads anywhere brings you thorough glorious yet generally unheralded country! The medicine bow ski area is small and pleasing. But the forest service campgrounds and the cerulean blue lakes and dense forests are such delightful bits of our heritage oft overlooked by those zipping past to the north on I-80. It is terrain in which one can lose him or herself, and, perhaps find same.

By Linda Dombkowski |

While heading to Reno recently we noticed a sign for Medicine Bow National Forest and Snowy Range Scenic Byway. We asked a couple at a gas station about it and they told us we would be sorry if we missed it. It is an absolutely beautiful drive with scenery around every turn. There was still a lot of snow on the hillsides and under trees. The lakes were beautiful, especially Marie Lane and Silver Lake. Traffic was light and we had no problem negotiating the 41-mile drive with several stops for photographs. Be sure to make this part of your trip if you are in the area.

By Grami5 |

My family would return time after time to Wyoming just to be in the Snowy Range and Medicine bow National Forest. This trip some of the hiking trails were still snowed in, but we took others and maybe forged one or two of our own. I almost hesitate to recommend it, as we feel like it's kind of our own little bit of paradise. We will be back again!

By MamaMolly |

We did a three day/two night loop, summiting Medicine Bow peak on the second night. Amazing trails and scenery. Incredible night sky!

By suzieFortCollins |

The snowy’s are truly a hidden gems with majestic mt views and glistening lakes every quarter mile. Endless hiking opportunities abound around every corner

By Lamarr K |

Drove over the mountain & experienced a hail storm with pea sized dropping about 3/4 inch deep in 12 minutes to look like snow. Covered the vehicle & on July 16.

By jpspvp3 |

The best views and no crowds, this is how Colorado use to be. We were able to stop and enjoy the views without being run down by traffic.

By Jay M |

...but it is beautiful and worth a drive. Or climb. Or bike it.

Just don't run it. It just may kill you.

By Keith H |

Almost impossible to write a review of a place where I enjoyed every minute
We took the long way from Laramie to Steamboat Springs
See pictures

By Clinton S |

This forest is just beautiful. We stopped, quite often, to take pictures. We stopped, at the lakes, at the top, and visited with some fishermen. They were catching trout. There were also a lot of hikers.

By rjgosselin |

Coming from Florida, we were excited about the prospect of mountains. (Not very many of those in Florida, mind you.)

But the unexpected view of SNOW upon the nearby peaks amazed us. We took a day to drive the Snowy Ridge Trail up into the mountains, make snowmen, throw snowballs and simply be amazed at the remains of winter 2013.

I suggest that you travel there in the summer (which is the last Thursday in June) unless you REALLY want a bunchof snow. Because if it STILL THERE in June, you can imagine what they had in January.

By brandyd320 |

Wonderful area full of mountains, streams, and lakes dotted throughout SE Wyoming. Beautiful for a drive or hike! Lots of back-country opportunities, just be aware of your surroundings.

By Carrick E |

We live in Laramie, Wyoming but we make frequent trips to Colorado as well. We constantly marvel at the difference between the Snowy Range and places along the front range nearer to Denver, particularly Rock Mountain National Park. If you want to be near the tallest mountain and the largest granite formations, RMNP is the place - but at the price of crowds, expense, and lack of parking. I recommend an eye on the goal - if you want peace in the mountains, with only occasional other hikers, and with lots and lots of picturesque mountain lakes and tarns at and near tree-line, the Snowy Range is the place to be. Beyond that, it's geologically interesting - rather than the granites and gneisses of RMNP, the Snowy Range is in an older package of rocks with quartzites, carbonates with stromatolites, and probable submarine volcanics from about 2 billion years ago. There's plenty to explore! Just watch out for sudden thunderstorms, mostly in the afternoon - being up on a ridge or exposed area during lightning can be deadly in any of these places.

By jtr2010 |

This is a great place to stop for a wonderful Scenic view and a nice rest. There are lovely wildflowers during the summer. As with most national Forest facilities, the bathroom is adequate, which means there is a vault toilet available. We stopped at a campground that had a lovely view of a lake. I think it was called Bowman Lake. The camp spot was that above 10,000 feet, so make sure you drink plenty of water.

By 007BigBlue |

This is another beautiful area Wyoming and this country and an awesome national forest. Aways remember to do our part to respect the lands and the take care of the forest for many others to share long behind us.

By Charles S |

Before you go, google Medicine circles. This is our version of Stonehenge. Just so much more to see in many different places. It left us with a new sense of wonder of the early inhabitants.

By Mark Vetock |

This is as good as it gets! A beautiful area full of gorgeous scenery, excellent hiking trails and beautiful alpine lakes. The drive through the snowy range is on of the best in America!

By Leslie R |

Great place to go for a walk or hike to see nature in its finest. Easy access for all levels including handicap. This park offers day hiking, rock climbing, trails, picnic and camping opportunities.

By j4mur2007 |

A beautiful place to visit. Visited most often in the mid summer. Great fishing and hiking experiences. Offers great snowmobiling in the winter.

By AllenMT |

Drove down the scenic byway through Medicine Bow which had just been opened the week before. There was still plenty of snow on the side of the road and numerous people were taking advantage of the nice day to go back country skiing. Many of the overlooks had yet to be plowed but the few that were had amazing views. If you're in the area, I would recommend this drive. Seems as though it would be less busy than some of the other options around Wyoming and Colorado.

By David L |

I have lived on the East Coast of the US my entire life and I never get into the mountains. However, after coming here, I realize I need to change that. The panoramas were unparalleled.

By M Richard M |

Spectacular views, try the dirt roads, even for cars. Wild life, saw 3 moose in one day. Great for 4x4 quads, hiking, and in winter the best groomed snow mobile trails.

By Gary L |

My family and I drove through here as a recommendation from our hotel in Laramie. Went over to the little town of Saratoga, WY. It was a tremendous drive with amazing views of beautiful mountains. Many cool places to stop and hike. I definitely recommend!

By lovebugvacations |

If you're looking for scenery without all the people of neighboring states, this is it. This is one of our favorite destinations. We've visited in summer and winter and haven't been disappointed. There's plenty to do whether you want to be out and busy or just take it easy and enjoy the mountain air. It's also kid friendly and doesn't feel as rushed/crowded as some of the other parks we've been to.

By okramarchuk |

Boy, the Medicine Bow National forest and especially the lakes are a nature lover's dream. Medicine Bow Peak and the surrounding Snowy Range are hidden in the mountains visible from Saratoga, WY from about 30 miles. When you arrive, the views are incredible. From the Libby Flats observation deck we could see to Long's Peak (about 180 miles as the crow flies) and as far away as the Routt National Forest. The hike wasn't easy but our late October visit was unforgettable. The weather was mild (about 40 degrees at 10,000'), the sun shine was splendid and the trails well marked. If you visit Wyoming, then a trip to Medicine Bow and the Snowy Range won't disappoint. We're definitely planning a return trip to camp and hike more.

By Jordan_McAlister |

This is one of my favorite national forests in the United States. It’s terrific for passing through on the highway between Laramie and Saratoga or getting out into the back country for hiking. There are well placed roadside pullouts along the way that emphasizes the majesty of the Snowy Range. Mirror Lake is a personal favorite. The alpine meadows are also great for wildflowers. It takes a very special person to not enjoy Medicine Bow National Forest.

By RBonin |

The first time we drove across the mountain range we hurried to beat the fog rolling in so it was pretty but not as beautiful as the second time we drove across. The weather was perfect! Very windy and cool on top, but seeing it in the sunshine was amazing!

By Johnbbq |

This was the 2nd Scenic Byway in the US. Uncrowded beautiful drive in the summer and fall over the famous Snowy Range and into the North Platte Valley. Connection west thru Encampment to Battle Pass Scenic Byway via WYDOT 70.

By Emily N |

We went for a quick ride while staying in Laramie. Beautiful to see. We stopped at the top of the mine and then drove down to Mirror Lake. The weather was getting nasty, but it was still a sight to see. Must be even prettier when the water is still.

By PineViewDr |

Beautiful drive with a great lookout at 10,800 feet. Stopped at several points to enjoy small lakes and stark rock walls. Glad we took this drive out of Laramie instead of driving straight on I-80.

By travelismyjob |

Well worth getting off interstate 80 to visit. a beautiful drive through pine forests, by lakes and snow capped peaks. There are many hiking trails to explore and trout to fish for.

By Japeth |

This is a wonderful group of parks. Plenty of campgrounds. Many are improved with water and pit toilets. Many more, spread over 100+ miles of gravel roads, provide quiet unimproved camping. Fantastic mountains and many miles of hiking, much of it strenuous. Get a road and trail map from a ranger station if you are leaving the paved roads.

By slimjim2348 |

Hiking in the national forest is excellent - there are people around but it is not crowded. We started at a trailhead in the Lewis lake picnic area. It is mostly at or above treeline. Good hiking, though you have to cross boulder fields in some areas.

By Brandi K |

We were staying in Laramie, took us about 45 minutes to drive to the visitor center, it was already 4, the ranger told us she would drive to Mirror Lake and then turn around and come back, that's what we did. The kids were so excited to see so much snow in the middle of June. We took our time, with lots of stops and pictures, still only took about an hour and a half. Beautiful scenery, so glad we went.

By Stu M |

Took this ride on the motorcycles with some friends for my 50th, all i can say is wow!!! The roadway is in great shape and the scenery and wildlife are abundant, We are going to make this an annual trip.

By Akshay1984 |

The park was not completely open due to snow on the road.. We could only visit few places around the forest.

By Caleb B |

This is just so beautiful. There are some great trails to hike and ponds to fish in. It is a bit of a drive from Laramie but totally worth it.

The Snowy Range and the Medicine Bow National Forest are vintage Wyoming... high elevation beauty at its finest. Pristine lakes and snow on the mountains which you can hike up to in the middle of summer. When we were there we saw Moose, Elk, and Marmots. The campgrounds harken back to a better time though as they have languished and are in disrepair. You cannot RSVP ahead of time so if you are from out of state timing is everything. The best spots are taken quickly and other prospective campers are left to circle like vultures in hopes someone is leaving. In the 10 minutes we were deciding between two spots, the campground became full. Good luck pulling in late in the evening. Don't expect the outhouses to be stocked with any supplies so bring your own TP and hand sanitizer. The consolation to camping in the area, is that these are some of the highest elevation campgrounds that you can actually use a camper in. There was a large snowfield below our campsite that we played in in the middle of summer. Pretty cool.

Native Americans used this sacred place for healing rituals and carving bows from the mahogany wood which is prevalent in the area. In this 2.2 million acre park you'll find a wide variety of settings including mountains, lakes, forests and grasslands. This is one of the most beautiful places on earth and definitely worth visiting. Absolutely gorgeous and meditatively peaceful. Happy trails.

Nice trails for hiking crisp clean lakes and streams it was late August and the lakes were probably forty degrees, we got to see a cow and bull moose up close at the back end of the road at the high altitude point seeing them on Television or in a photo does them no justice, they are huge, I thought the cow was big and then the bull stood up to check us out and he took my breath.

Loved this National Forest, driving from Laramie to Saratoga, Wyoming. Beautiful scenery! Could see the smoke from Colorado wildfires.

By travel644 |

We had often heard that the drive through the Medicine Bow National Forest was one of the most beautiful in the United States, but have never been in this part of Wyoming until this year. We were not disappointed. The scenery here is stunning, certainly as beautiful as the better known Rocky Mountain National Park. We found this drive to be unique in that it lacks the severe switchbacks and steep grades you find in other mountainous roads, but there is no lack in sheer beauty. Even in August we found much snow at the highest elevations, as well as glacial lakes and fields of colorful mountain flowers that seem to go on forever. We very much appreciated the lack of crowds and traffic that can sometimes take away from experiences at heavily traveled parks like Yellowstone. We've been all through the American West, and this has jumped to the top as one of our favorite drives of all time. Caution: you will fall in love with the Medicine Bow National Forest.

Very scenic!! The Snowy Range is spectacular and most of the hikes are right off of HWY 130 and there are alpine lakes around every corner.

By Deb S |

This scenic drive is well worth your time. It has a well maintained and wide road. We traveled it in a class C motorhome. There were amazing views and lots of turn outs and vista points. I recommend stopping at Libby Flats Observation site on the Snowy Mountain Range Summit (10,580ft) and walk to the observation tower. The view is breathtaking and you can see for miles. It also has nice informative signs to read. We traveled Wyoming 130 but you can take the longer route. We seen soaring hawks, antelope, wild horses and free ranging cattle. Beautiful wild flowers and interesting rock formations. There are places to camp and to hike. We spent about 4 hours on this drive, but I would love to go and do some of the hiking trails.

By Bill S |

This is a very scenic drive from Laramie to Saratoga reaching elevations in excess of 11,000 feet. For the fisherman, there are many small lakes on the way.

By Jeanette A |

We had one day in Laramie before heading south to Estes Park, Colorado. Saw many reviews on Trip Advisor recommending this drive if time allowed. It was unbelievably beautiful!! We walked the road down to a campground on Libby Lake and it couldn't have been more peaceful, serene and beautiful. Still lots of snow mid July. Had no idea this mt range was hidden in eastern Wyoming.
Thought it was funny that the mgr at the campground we stayed at lived in Laramie and had never visited. To all the locals…take the time to enjoy the beautiful nature outside your backdoor.

By derel s |

The Snowy Range is almost a secret destination since it lies along WYh 130 west of Laramie and south of I-80, so it doesn't get much attention or publicity. I shouldn't mention it now for fear that it would be overrun by tourists. I first witnessed it as a little kid back in the late '40s. When I moved to CO in'93, one of the first experiences I undertook was to visit the SR and see if it was I remembered. It was! Still breathtaking! I've returned many times to cabin or house rentals with friends and my animals, and they've always been very special and memorable expeiences. Many, many opportunities for hiking, fishing, climbing, etc. I intend to return again this June '20. Please don't overrun me!

By texasalan2016 |

Visited several areas. Very few people, you had the entire areas to yourself to enjoy the waterfalls, snow, views, and creeks.

By Cynthia J |

We stayed in one of the Forest Service cabins for a couple of nights. We did three great hikes including climbing Medicine Bow peak. There are so many beautiful lakes and views and great hikes. Highly recommend visiting and spending some time here.

By drkimspiration |

Counterclockwise proved the wise choice for my hike at Snowy Peaks ! I started on the lakes trail and added on the peak trail. Gentle descent. Only wish the ascending boulder field was better marked. If you want lake and mountain photos, this is the hike! The national forest is a gem most might pass by. Don’t!

By HuskerAndrea |

We drove through at the end of May and apparently, they had just cleared the roads. There was a lot of snow so it was difficult to access any trails but the views were stunning!

By Barbara G |

The area is beautiful and there is a quaint town (Centennial, WY) located in the area. Lots of hiking/walking trails. Plenty of camping areas. Recommend spending a few days in the area.

By Gary W S |

Hwy 130 west out of Laramie is scenic byway that takes you thru Centennial, then up into the Snowy Range. The beetles have hammered to forest pretty hard, but it is STILL scenic. There are numerous high altitude lakes, and the old stone observation tower at 10,800 ft Cameron Pass is an old classic.

By Michael P |

Read an article about MBNF in the Denver Post and decided to expand our range. We picked the toughest trail for our hike: Medicine Bow Peak.

By our standards the hike is short at about 9 miles round trip and moderate elevation gain of 1500 ft from the Lake Marie West TH. But the trail is extremely rocky making the going slow. The lake views at the start are great. Unfortunately the California fires’ smoke degraded the views from the top.

There are many more trails in this area and there are a fraction of the visitors that overrun the CO forests and parks.

We recommend this area. If you’re a camper, it’s very convenient. We’re not so we stayed in Laramie and had 30 mile drive each day but there was ZERO traffic on WY 130.

By Danielle E |

Sad to see the dead trees but overall a gorgeous place and fall is such a fun time of year when you get to see the leaves changing color! A beautiful drive and many places to stop and explore!

By L W |

I would love to say this place is awful just to keep everyone else away.... I cant do it... This forest is Wyomings best kept secret. Great fishing, hiking and wildlife. I love it

By PeachBelle8288 |

We drove thru the Snowy Range Scenic Highway and Medicine Bow National Forest on our way to Rawlins, WY. The route is beautiful and highly recommend it if you have the time. We did not have great visibility because of the heavy rain but it was a nice drive.

By Kathleen R |

Medicine Bow is by far the most beautiful place in Laramie. The hike to the top is a little strenuous but definitely worth it. If an intense hike isn't your idea of a good time, there are beautiful alpine fields and crystal clear lakes at the base of the mountain. Moose and deer usually hang out around here as well.

By Nancy V |

We have hiked here many times and never tire of it (well, tired at the end of the day!). There are trails at high elevations above treeline and trails through forests that are a bit lower (say, only 10,000 '). Beautiful lakes, good fishing we are told. People love to camp here. If you are a hiker or fisher person, this is a great destination. We notice more people than maybe 10 years ago, but it is still relatively undiscovered.

By Sharon S |

One of the most peaceful and beautiful places I have been is Mirror Lake in Medicine Bow National Forest. I could just sit and enjoy the beauty for hours. There were a couple people fly fishing there but we just enjoyed the view. One of my favorite spots on our trip.

By annette t |

We did this as a day trip from Laramie. even on the overcast day we went the views and animal life were abundant. We packed a picnic and found a nice place to eat after a short hike

By SmalltownColorado |

If you enjoy mountain scenery, this is well worth driving through. We did not stop at any of the lakes or pull outs as we were on our way home, but the scenery was lovely.

By dan r |

Absolute beauty! Grab a map, loop around as much as you have time for. We saw moose and a bear once we got off the main roads. Saratoga has some good lunch options.

By williamhX3534WT |

The town of Medicine Bow has a quaint restaurant/ hotel called the Virginian, great place to eat. 60 miles west of Laramie, Wyoming.

By Junior |

Spent half a day going from one scenic vista to another. The mountains tower over several lakes and there are numerous trails to hike from easy to difficult. I didn't see much wildlife but was lucky to see a wolf and a deer.

By Hugh S |

Strange to be reviewing God's country, but here goes. The scenery you see is just the beginning. In the summer, drive back into side roads a bit to experience peace and beauty. It'd be good to use sunscreen and a little repellent. Lewis Lake and Lake Marie are two main areas to view, and at any time of daylight. This area is only a half hour from Laramie, and I hesitate to say more because I don't want it ruined by developers. Plan a picnic and enjoy. You'll never regret it or forget it.

By Lisa T |

Drove up on Parent's weekend. Stopped by the ski area to check it out. By the time we reached the summit, it was snowing but beautiful pictures anyway. Breathtaking views and many places to pull off to take pictures. On the way back we stopped at the little town to check out the antique and Old West memorabilia. Gentleman volunteer had plenty of info for all our questions.

By caligirlecr |

Oh my.....you must see this amazing scenery. It is clean, beautiful, and there are many places to stop, rest, canoe, or sit and enjoy the surroundings. I had a dog with me and it was so nice for him, too.

By 7USAgirl |

Our family drove through Medicine Bow by way of Snowy Range Road. It took about one hour from Laramie to Saratoga, WY. Amazing views plenty of places to stop and take pictures.

By s b |

Took a day trip to see the colorful trees. Stoped at the visitor center and was given great information where to see the best colors and the favorite views of lakes and the Snowy Range.

By Katherine F |

My husband and I decided on a whim to drive through Medicine Bow on our way from Ft. Collins to Riverton, WY and boy were we pleasantly surprised. My husband had actually visited Mirror Lake once before with his family and so we decided to take the Snowy Range scenic drive through the National Forrest and stop at the lake as well. It's a beautiful, high-altitude drive that tops out with panoramic views of the mountains and a little lookout post that looks like a castle turret! The road back to the Mirror Lake picnic area was closed due to snow so we had to turn around and park a little ways back up the road in a pull off. We hiked the Lakes trail (about 1 mile) and had a little picnic before heading back to the car. There was quite a bit of snow still on the trail in July but it was a great payoff! Would love to return and spend more than just an afternoon in the Medicine Bow National Forest - definitely a hidden jewel!

By Melitta B |

Amazing scenery and wildlife! We enjoyed every minute of our drive thru this beautiful area. We would definitely encourage other travelers to visit.

By nise-hawks |

Instead of taking I-80 west of Laramie, we decided to take Hwy 130 west through Medicine Bow and we are so glad we took the scenic route! It is an absolutely beautiful park with sparkling clear lakes and snow topped mountains (in July)! We got to a high enough altitude the kids were able to play in the snow. It was not crowded and it had lots of hiking opportunities. We saw a wolf, which was the only one we saw on our 3000 mile road trip west. It was worth the extra time to take the scenic route.

By cellproguy |

The Libby and Lewis lakes in the Medicine Bow forest's Sugarloaf recreation area near the top of the pass between Laramie and Saratoga Wyoming are NOT to be missed! Trout fishing is great, even in the small creeks, and the Primitive Wilderness area starts just North of Lewis lake as you cross the ridge to drop into my favorite backpacking campground, Deep Lake! Take the Medicine Bow trail from Lewis Lake to the top of Medicine Bow peak for a stunning view! BE SURE to take your sun lotion as the altitude allows ample sunshine, although weather conditions can change on a dime up here. USDA Eagle permits honored in this national forest. SHOULD be open to vehicles by July through September. Check website for current open/closed status for vehicles.

By Doug K |

We wanted to access the National Forest but found that most of the snowmobilers in eastern Wyoming had the same idea. I'd advise foot travelers to pick a weekday to visit.

By John10050 |

Spent 3 days hiking and exploring. Was not disappointed. There are roads and trails all over. Trails are easy to find and locate and are available for every level of hiker. The views from the peaks are spectacular. Had a great time. This is a don't miss kind of place.

By Robert F |

This park is just a 40 minute drive outside of Laramie. It has great views, hiking trails and scenic stops. A must see in the area.

By beckywoods51 |

We came here to go snowmobiling and I have to say this is one of the best places to come for great trailes and amazing snow!

By Molly S |

I have been to Italy, Germany and the Czech Republic, and this is easily the most naturally beautiful place I have ever seen.

By d_erdmann |

Have been here before (hike around Marie and Mirror Lake) and decided to return. The ranger station recommended to do the Sugerlaof Mountain / Medicine Bow trail - what an excellent suggestion, with every switchback the view got better and better. Started at Lewis lake with lovely flowers around, got into the more rocky and alpine switchbacks up the mountain, up to some ice fields (in August!). Didn’t make it fully to the top because I seem to have left the original trail in the end and followed footsteps over an ice field which at the end was a bit too insecure for me as a single Traveller and no-one near, but the views up to there were already magnificent, and I am so glad that I went. Will return next time I’m in the area again - there are more spectacular trails to be hiked!

By Paula L |

We took a hike in Medicine Bow early on a Saturday morning. We were looking for Lake Marie, but ended hiking near Lake Lewis. Absolutely beautiful area. Loved it!

By RLG-AZ |

We drove west out of Laramie through Centennial into the mountains. Although we live in Arizona, this is one of our favorite places to visit. The scenery is amazing, and the hikes are awesome. This is a great alternative to the Rocky Mountain National Park because it is not overrun with tourists. The hike to Medicine Bow Peak is difficult, but the views are worth the work. This is one of our favorite hikes in the world.

By WolfoxRhose |

I admit, I love driving through National Forests, offering beautiful drives through gorgeous scenery. Medicine Bow is no exception, with signage of trails for hikers.

By BriguyThompson |

We did the medicine bow Peak trail from mirror lake. It's a tough 7 mile hike, but the views make it well worth the effort. The snow pack in July made the decent difficult and muddy at times. I would recommend trying this hike a little later, August perhaps.

By IrishHolliday |

It was quite a thrill to see so much snow in early June! While everyone else I know was headed to the beach, we headed to the mountains for some quiet time in the snow. The views are absolutely breath-taking. What you cannot enjoy in the photos is the smell of the pine trees or the brisk breeze on your face. The photos are lovely, but the in person experience can't be beat. We had a great time stopping along the way to enjoy the scenery. I also recommend that you visit the visitor's centers on both sides of the mountain. It was a lot of fun to learn more about the park from the park rangers. (Plus, I picked up some very cute toys for the nieces and nephews.)

By Mon55 |

We had wanted to drive the high road but due to weather we did not achieve this. However we went though the lower section and enjoyed this. It is beautiful in autumn colour

By Ronald F |

Great place to travel and see nice mountains great road with lots of scienary I would travel on it again.

By WyomingCooboy |

Highway 130 runs from Laramie over the Snowy Range of the Rockies to Saratoga and Encampment on the west side. It's officially a Scenic Byway, and deserves the designation. There are lots of places to stop and get out. I recommend the Libby Flats pull off at the summit. You can walk out to an observation point and see for miles in every direction. There are usually alpine wildflowers there and at other places as well during e summer. Be advised that the road is usually closed from late October to Memorial Day, and it can snow before or after that, so check the weather and/or the Wyoming DOT road conditions at wyoroad.info.

By davidtgordon |

Despite being a really cold and windy day we thoroughly enjoyed our day exploring Medicine Bow and the Snowy Range biway.
Great views from all the pull offs, shame some were inaccessible due to lying snow.
Well worth the drive.

By Margie W |

We were in Laramie to visit our son who has lived there for the past 12 years since attending UW. We took a ride up to the Snowy Range and Centennial

By Todd G |

Drive out of Laramie and really begin to see Wyoming. Head west 29 miles on Wyoming 130 and drive through the small town of Centennial to hit the Snowy Range. the peaks are covered in snow nearly all year. The drive is absolutely breathtaking and there are ample places to pull off. Half way up, you'll get to the Ski Resort. This is all part of the Medicine Bow National forest which extends deep into Colorado as well. You will likely see Moose, Bear, coyote and many others. There is a wonderful memorial at the summit of Snowy Mountain Range to the victims of a fateful United Airlines flight 409 from Denver in 1955.

By geeta16 |

I did not expect this place to be so beautiful. It is nature at its glorious best. The snow clad mountains, the lakes , the rocks and fantastic trails passing through meadows covered with lovely flowers are a sight to behold and cherish. A photographer's delight.

By Dane W |

We decided to go through Medicine Bow National Forrest on our way to the Tetons. Beautiful area that rivals the Teton/Yellowstone Parks minus the crowds. Lots of trails and scenic areas.

By jendespain |

Midsummer hikes are the best in this area! We saw a moose and thoroughly enjoyed the breathtaking scenery.

By Waterlaw |

Mountain range and grasslands, with beautifully clear streams. Terrific hiking and walking opportunities, particularly with dogs.

By Christina M |

Went to hike Medicine Bow peak and could not- conveniently forgot that there was still 20-foot high snow drifts on the mountain in early June. Was informed by the ranger that the snowfall melts ~1 foot/day as soon as the weather warms up. Hikes in the lowlands are not as physically strenuous, but are still beautiful.

By Sherry J |

Gorgeous scenery and views. Lake Marie had valleys of wildflowers. Truly beautiful drive. Missed seeing a bear cub by seconds. Take time to smell the flowers and relax.

By Caitlin N |

Breathtaking! There were so many great trails, byways, and great spots! It was such a nice place to travel through to get to the west side of the state.

By Michaela K |

This is a beautiful area and drive, especially on a clear day. There are great hikes for everyone, even just around the edge of the lakes. If you're up to hike the summit or even part of it, the views just get better!

By 088Traveler880 |

Make the effort to travel to Wyoming's Snowy Range to see Sugarloaf and Medicine Bow Peak. Reflected in Lake Marie and Mirror Lake, these peaks are beautiful in every season. Want snow? In September? You got it, if you're willing to trek to the top of Medicine Bow Peak. Hydrate well and and altitude effects should be minimal unless you're a legit flatlander. One of the true gems of the US west.

By REBORN IDENTITY |

I've been to Wyoming a few times and seen some great scenery but Medicine Bow Peak in Medicine Bow National Forest near Laramie is out of this world. I took my wife for our anniversary and we got our fill of Moose encounters, jaw-dropping panoramic views, and perfect weather for forest in higher elevation. I'll be back for sure with more time to explore.

By egeraldm |

The Medicine Bow National Forest is both east (Vedauwoo) and west (Snowy Range) of Laramie, WY. Both have their charm. Vedauwo is a mighty rock formation that extends north from I80. The turn-off is marked and the road is unpaved. Driving north from I80 provides views of Vedauwoo plus some mountain beautiful scenery. In the fall the aspen turn red and gold and provide a lovely scene against the backdrop the green pines.
West of Laramie about 25miles is the Snowy Range area of the Forest. The name comes from the fact that there is snow on the Range year-around. Driving through the Snowy Range is an exhilarating experience. There are mountain lakes, mountain streams. aspen, pine, wild flowers, and often a moose or elk. The paved road has turnoffs which allow time to view a variety of vistas, and the lakes are accessible for fishing (in season and with license), but are too cold and deep for swimming. The drive through the Snow Range is about thirty miles, and it is closed from October until Memorial Day because of the snow. On the west side of the Range is a lower and flatter stretch that comes to a stop where a right turn takes one to Saratoga and a left turn to Riverside. At Riverside one may continue into Colorado or return to Laramie via a companion route that goes through Woods Landing. There are a myriad of variations to the Snowy Range and back to Laramie. An interesting monument off the Highway (State 130) is found about ten miles after the Ranger Station. It marks the crash of a United Airline crash in the mid 1930s. The plane hit Laramie Peak in a snowstorm and all aboard were killed. At that time the main route of United was through Wyoming.

By dotdash |

Drove through here on way to Steamboat Springs. Stopped off to walk the Mirror Lake trail - or part of it. Beautiful rocky mountain scenery, pine forests (smelt lovely) and lakes. Really enjoyed having some quiet time with nature. Would recommend.

By Joy R |

Walked on Little Laramie trail. There's 3 different paths, and we took 2. Total of 5 miles, but you can go 6. Wish we would've. The map says it's a medium (difficulty)and for me I found it pretty easy.

By Larry |

The Medicine Bow National Forest is still fairly undefiled if you get off the beaten track. There are many small forest service roads if you're looking for someplace peaceful to relax.

By Gpickup |

All I can say is it is a pretty drive. We are from the flat lands, and Medicine Bow National Forest is not in the least flat.

By Lonnie S |

The Snowies offer many, many miles of hiking trails. The trail heads can be crowded but the area is so large that people disperse quickly as they head to their favorite spots. It is so beautiful in the summer, please pack out anything that you pack in.

By mjt1111 |

Medicine Bow National Forest is a gem. There's access to all types of outdoor activities -- hiking, fishing, camping, skiing. And it's beautiful all seasons.

By Skip L |

With our Polaris Ranger, we were able to do some serious exploring in and around Medicine Bow national Forest. We stayed in a wonderful cabin at Mountain Meadows Camp Ground. Wonderful Folks.

By Tlea126 |

Best medicine for stress. Need I say more. Wide open spaces everywhere you look with sparely placed ranches from people who had big dreams long ago with wildlife making themselves present, all knowing you are in their home space. Beauty at its BEST.

By austinfamilyof4 |

We were staying in Saratoga and drove Hwy 130 through Medicine Bow. We stopped at the very nice ranger station on the east side of the forest and received a free trail map, which we then used to drive our jeep on some of the off-road trails through the north part of the forest. The trails were well maintained and pretty well marked (we didn't really need a jeep or even a four wheel drive vehicle). We brought a cooler with lunch and stopped at the midpoint of our off-road excursion, Sandy Lake, to eat. Beautiful lake and some neat old cabins to inspect. Given that the whole area shuts down at the end of October, it was not crowded at all. Seemed like mostly hunters camping out, wish I had worn bright orange...
We also made a separate stop at Lake Marie right off of Hwy 130 and did the brief Falls Trail south of highway. I thought I was in pretty good shape but apparently not at 10k feet.

By John H |

we take time to explore new Forest Service roads every time we travel through this venue. Have never been disappointed by any experience here.

By egwegw |

We have been here a dozen times since moving to Wyoming and each time is breath-takingly beautiful. In spring there are alpine meadow flowers and near winter snow caps the ridges. Gorgeous.

By Bingo star |

The rock formations look interesting from the road. I passed by and headed to the Snowy Range my first day exploring the Cheyenne/ Laramie area. The next day I turned on Vedauwoo Road and entered the Medicine Bow National Forest . This area is beautiful!! It was raining so hard I decided to come back another day to camp, hike and trail run. Camping is walk up only. Turn off! You will enjoy this area.

By 1SRQTraveler |

Coming from Florida, this was a fantastic change of scenery. Beautiful vistas and mountain lakes. Walked on snow packed mountains!

Wife and I took a quick drive out to Medicine Bow National forest hadn't been there in a while. Hoping to see moose, we drove near some beaver ponds surrounded by willow, but no moose.
Thankful to have access to so many pretty places near Laramie.

By Greenfireflygirl |

There are so many trail options here, I will say that there's something for everyone. Wildflowers are amazing! Views are perfect everywhere! I recommend making a loop trail with lost lakes trail, you'll pass several lakes on every trail, and many amazing spots to stop and pitch a tent! These are not crowded trails, and while you WILL see people on a several day trip, you will not be forced to camp near any.

By webbfoot |

We were here on 09-24-18, it had snowed about 4" the night before. The mountains and lakes were beautiful. Great views of surrounding area from the tower overlook. It was very cold and very windy.

By Kimberly J |

Medicine Bow National Forest has a large variety of options for hiking trails from beginner/easy to expert/more difficult hikes. Very pretty

By Lorri M |

One of the most beautiful places on Earth! We made many stops along the drive to view the wildlife and the crystal clear lakes. We were here in July and not only were the mountains capped in snow but there was also snow still piled up along the side of the road. We even got to see a moose! It's an amazing drive and can't wait to go back!

By Annmarie P |

Beautiful trails and lakes. Definitely a must see when in Laramie. Had a great time. Trails can be little steep in places.

By go2wyo |

Nothing beats fishing at an altitude of 9,000 ft. with the sunny days, clear skies, and just the sound of the rushing stream. I'm captivated by the surrounding forest in which one can see everything from a fox, mule deer, elk or moose ambling in the dense undercover, or look up...you might see a hawk or even an eagle soaring in the sky. The trout may not be large, but they are plenty, and plenty tasty!
