Absolutely beautiful and breathtaking through canyons and mountains sometimes a little scary but keeps your adrenaline going. Highly recommend that you stop and enjoy the scenic views. Take your time on this road

By Brssjunk |

The views are absolutely out of sight! It was worth every penny of the million dollars that it cost. As you travel, note the yellow river below and the tunnels scattered through the canyon.

I’m so glad we did this drive from Ouray to silverton. It’s a little scary in spots, with steep drop offs. Don’t go too fast so you can stop and view the pullouts. Take your time and enjoy the views!

What a fantastic drive and every corner gives a new view to see. We did it in a Kia Soul so it can be done in any kind of car and is totally worth it. Take it in turns to drive so everyone can see the stunning views

In a long list of must-drive-roads, this one probably ranks pretty high on my list. The stretch of US-550 from Ouray to Silverton - and you'll really want to drive it in this direction - is called the Million Dollar Highway, apparantly because that's what it cost to lay down the asphalt here through the breathtaking San Juan Mountains, although alternate etymologic explanations co-exist. Driving south will put you on the outer part of this two-lane, which at times has vertical drop-offs without any guardrails. It's this sole attribute that has catapulted the scenic byway, part of the San Juan Skyway, into eternal stardom. It's the passengers that really get to enjoy the views, and the feeling of helplessness, as the driver navigates the twisting road. Really, you shouldn't worry too much, definitely not in good weather, but rainy or icy conditions are a different story altogether.

I will start by saying I am afraid of heights!! By the time we got to Ouray from Durango I was in anxiety mode. I knew what I was getting myself into because we have been here before.

There are sections as you climb the mountains that there are no guardrails. You must be alert when driving.

The mountains and view were phenomenal!!

We have visited during the last week of September when the fall colors were at peak. It was such a beautiful drive with steep curves in between. You gotta be careful with the speed when driving this route. One tends to lose the control of the speed especially when descending the hill. We took the route from Ouray to Silverton. Though they say the highway extends till Ridgeway, the main scenic part is between Ouray and Silverton. Lots of photo opportunities throughout the highway. One must definitely stop at the Ouray lake and the red mountain scenic overlook.

Had a no plan day so we decided to drive from Ouray to Silverton just for this Highway. Why not!?!? It was beautiful. So many pull over spots to get pics. I can’t imagine driving it in the winter. It was sunny in the morning and we had the top down in the convertible. It was 50 degrees at 8am in July! It wasn’t as overwhelming as some made it seem lol. We passed semis, horse trailers, campers… and they were fine. There’s places to pull over if you’re going to slow so that’s nice. Def stop at the bridge overlook to take pics!

The drive from Ouray to Silverton is an experience. The mountains are beautiful and there is a number of waterfalls coming down the sides of the road throughout. This year there are many avalanche paths of debris that show the power all that snow has. The river is roaring and it’s incredible views the entire way.

After leaving Cortez, CO, we were headed to Albuquerque, NM. Having a few different options of travel to choose from, we opted for the quickest route possible. The initial roads out of Cortez, CO to access Route 550 are not very good - very bumpy, narrow and they take you through some areas where speed limits are limited. However, once we finally arrived on Route 550 - the roads were nicely paved, while providing safe passage with the large median strip area, yet windy and curvy roads. The sites along the way are numerous and vast, yet provided plenty of options to maintain your speed or speed up a bit due to limited traffic and other cars. We enjoyed the drive to Rio Rancho, just outside of Albuquerque on our way to the Balloon Festival.

Really something to see! Views all around you. Plus there is a few places to stop and get out of the car and take a break. one had a neat ledge to walk out on where you see a beautiful water fall and then also a canyon. with rushing water. another place to stop and take pictures is the sign "Ouray the Switzerland of The USA".
they road has no guard rails at all and it is 15 miles speed limit in some area.
but if you watch your speed you will be ok. with every minute of it!!

If you ever get a chance to drive down the million dollar highway I highly recommend it exceptionally scenic with multiple turn outs some beautiful waterfalls some near in some further away from the road

One of my favorite spots to photograph is Crystal Lake which is about 15 minutes south of Ouray. Look for a red stone abandon building on your left if you’re heading south from Ouray. Across from there you’ll see a metal gate and a road that leads to the lake go to the middle or at the very end of the road and look back towards the mountains, sunrise is quite spectacular.

If you just look where most of the people pulled over you’ll get the general idea where you need to get out and walk but there are some hidden gems that you really have to be paying attention and be quick to spot

We can thank Otto Mears for building this incredible road and Chief Ouray for letting him do it!

By FransHeijmans |

beautiful scenery along this mountain scenery highway. lots of history during the trip and fun to drive this winding road.

By Richi1967 |

We had an absolut fantastic drive from Ouray via Silverton to Durango on a beautiful September day.
Just "WOW's" and "BOAH".
Take the time to plan plenty of stops just to absorb this great scenerie!

By MildaLeo |

This very special highway has a spectacular history, lots of stories around it and offers amazing views. Many parts don't have regular safety measures, so drive attentively and avoid dark. But it is definitely one of the most breath-taking and historic roads in the US. First days of May were still full of snow and ice!

By ColoradoGuy582 |

taking this trip in the fall is great scenery w/old mines and golden aspens. there are some pulloffs to use for photo opps. it's a narrow & winding road, so keep at least an eye on the road.

if there is snow forecast, i'd postpone my trip over red mountain. there's not room for error in several sections.

By Marianne M |

The road goes through several terrains - one area has steep drop offs and no guard rails. Other areas include old mining and perhaps still active mining.

By MikeB1952 |

So, it's safe. It just doesn't feel like it in places. Driving out of Ouray, my wife was on the downhill side of the car. She asked me several times if I couldn't hug the center a bit more since it felt like we were too close to the edge. Wouldn't like to go in the middle of a snowstorm. Otherwise, just take it easy.

Now for the road. Wow! This has to be one of the most fabulous roads in America! The road is a real challenge in places. But the views - spectacular, ever changing. Near Ouray, the mountains are spectacular. When we were there the aspen were in full color (like the gorgeous Fall gold). We took the route slow so that we could soak in the beauty. We recommend the same for you.

If you can only go one place on your summer vacation, go to the San Juan Mountains of southeastern Colorado and drive the Million Dollar Highway. Scenic splendor will be yours every foot of this way. The Highway connects Ouray and Silverton, both some of the nicest towns in the state, and affordable places to stay. I recommend you stay in Silverton for the absolute peace and quiet, along with friendly locals. If you have a 4x4, this place is paradise, with high-mountain passes that give you views of heaven in every direction. You can also rent Jeeps in Silverton. Don't waste another vacation day anywhere else, come here!

By Tempusfugit2015 |

Plan a daytrip from Ouray to Silverton or Durango
Need AWD the views are incredible
Best to DO the drive on a sunny dry day
Leave by 9 am
There are no rails on most of the drive but plenty of viewing spots and lake camp sites to enjoy

By Cynthia K |

I give it 5 stars for the spectacular scenery. I thought it was great. My husband, who was driving, did NOT have a good time. We were traveling from Cortez, CO to Montrose with our 16 foot travel trailer. Almost non stop cussing.

There's several pulloffs. Our favorite (the only one we stopped at) was Molas Pass.
Large parking area. Information boards & pit toilet restrooms. Fabulous views!

He was stressed out with the numerous switchbacks, almost always on the brake. You had to watch for the dumbasses going the other way who thought the yellow line was just a suggestion.
The weather that day was perfect - sunny & dry. I wouldn't take this if it was precipitating in any way.

By KellyKile |

We drove from Durango through Silverton to Ouray. It was an amazing drive but scary at times. The views were spectacular for passengers but the driver better keep their eyes on the road. Lots of places to stop and look and take pictures

By Remy's Mom |

Fun, Fun, Fun. Respect your vehicle when driving this highway! Very scenic, very slow traveling, but worth every minute.

By Michelle Z |

The road is winding through the high mountains, narrow beside the cliffs. If you are afraid of height, make sure you drive from silverton to ouray, so you won't be on the outside/empty side of the road. It's better to drive on a good day.

By Mary S |

You must drive this scenic highway at some point in your life. Jaw dropping gorgeous, and worth every photo you will take. Be prepared to be amazed!

By Snmoblr |

Wanted to visit this stretch of road for a long time. We visited our on our motorcycle on the end of September. Leaves were spectacular in color, and the weather was beautiful. Take your time and enjoy the views. Stop in Silverton for lunch and continue to the end, dont short change the day.

By luvmythree |

The road is known for sharp curves, steep hills, and no guard rails. I will add that with the road construction scattered throughout this summer, there are also miles of loose gravel and NO lines on the pavement. Everyone drives slowly and if you just stay focused, it's not bad at all. I must admit that I had sweaty palms a few times....especially after my teen kids Googled "Million Dollar Highway DEATHS" right before we drove on the road! I think they were a little terrified, but when it was all done, it was one part of their favorite day on our whole road trip!

By Allen K |

Absolutely spectacular ride, definitely need to be a skilled rider! Make the entire loop thru Breckenridge and go both clockwise and counterclockwise. Definitely worth the effort!

By GKP46 |

I've ridden my motorcycle on the Million Dollar Highway many times and never tire of it. I ride from Texas traveling over 1600 miles to ride it......always enjoy the view and ride.

By 245cocoz |

Thought I would be nervous after some reviews but if you feel comfortable driving you should do just fine. Just slow down when needed is the only change I needed to make.
Just a lovely drive!

By Vickers55 |

It is a very scenic drive but can also be scary with no barriers and steep drops. But it is paved and two lane all way. Well worth doing

By Tammy P |

Went in late fall so most colors were gone. Snow was in the higher elevations but everything was open. We kept stopping for pictures, hikes, food, views, info for more things to visit later..... it was fantastic! We plan on doing this on our motorcycles Very soon!!

By LiketoeatCincinnati |

This is an awesome drive between Ouray and Silverton. The road is steep and curves winding. It can be a bit scary but also fun. The views are amazing.

By kyso1690 |

This is one of the most exhilarating rides we've been on on motorcycle. Spectacular views and a hart stoping, take your breath away route through the mountain side!!!

By Martha C |

Amazing views, we took our time to make sure we experienced everything this road has to offer. Saw some beautiful waterfalls just off the road and took some great pictures.

By barbaragwen270 |

We started in Durango and ended up in Ouray. This was one of the most beautiful drives I've ever taken anywhere in the world. The scenery is beyond description, simply amazingly breathtaking. Please be aware that the road is steep with hairpin and blind curves all along the way. The drop-off is very, very steep. Some guardrails, not many. We made this drive in our Corvette and we had a ball. The road is perfectly safe as long as you use your head and don't try to speed. Also, the driver should be able to drive in lower gears to avoid the burnout of the cars breaks. I would not make this drive pulling a large trailer or fifth wheel. If you want to see some beautiful sights, drive this road. You'll never forget the experience.

By Bowmanator22 |

I love taking scenic drives, and Highway 550 between Durango and Ouray is one of the most beautiful mountain drives I’ve ever seen! Late September was the perfect time of year, as the leaves were changing. That made for some unbelievable scenery! Definitely do this drive!

By Perry S |

Beautiful scenery, and if you are like me, love the winding road.
You get a lot of different views of the mountains, love the shelf road section.

By Gene E |

Vistas just too big to be captured by camera. Just when you think you have discovered the ultimate “Western View”, the next heart stopper comes into view.

By Doug K |

We hit the highway during the fall scenery peak and found people pulling off wherever they could to take photographs. And when a moose is sighted, forget it, they stop traffic>

By NWATravelers1000 |

This drive through Colorado was Gorgeous..I guess. As the driver I did not experience the beauty much. Drivers really have no opportunity to take their eyes off the road. Be sure to allow enough time to pull off at the overlooks to experience views. The speed limit is safe enough but you know when a local is on your bumper wanting you to speed up. One should definitely schedule time to spend at Ouray. This is a great mountain town with wonderful views of the surrounding mountains. Plenty of great food spots at Ouray.

By Sandy O |

All I can say is forget what you've read about it being scary. My husband and I did not find it scary at all to take this route, but we are seasoned travelers who have ridden in many parts of the country.
Take the drive, take it at a speed comfortable to you and you will be fine. There is lots of incredible scenery to see along the way.
The best advice I can give is to make sure you stay hydrated. Those of us from the Midwest don't think about things like this because we have more humidity in the air. We are also not experienced with altitude, so move a bit more slowly and you won't have a problem.
we continued on to make the complete loop past Ouray, but were turned around due to fires, so we got to ride this highway in both directions. Lucky us!

By Rosemary D |

The view (million $$$ worth, pun intended) are amazing. I wasn't driving so my husband couldn't enjoy it like I was but he says he'll never do it again. Maybe I'll drive next time.

By jen |

Absolutely beautiful drive if you can take the no guard rails. I was so freaked out my husband asked if I would take a Valium…and lay the seat down…and put a coat over my head…so he could concentrate on driving. It’s a white knuckle drive but one you must do.

By michaeljones46 |

Cool, not so scary drive from Durango to Ouray. Beautiful scenery, never did see a scary part of the road that many talk about. Thought the drive was great and quite gorgeous.

By AaronFWA |

Great spectacular views..plan plenty of time for the drive for certain. Real tunnels! Just be certain you are ok on taking a number of tight turns

By 59GypsyGirl |

After riding the train into Silverton, we rode out and back to Durango on the Million Dollar Highway. We were being rained on in Silverton, but it quickly turned to snow and enough to cover the road. It is as beautiful. My first ever in July. The drive is wonderful. And all enjoyed the views by leaving the driving to someone else.

By patkarenneal |

Fabulous scenery. I'm just sorry I was driving and couldn't snap pics right and left! Peak color on 9/23-23

By Rho |

We took the bus to Silverton to ride the train back to Durango. Our bus driver gave us so much history and it was very interesting to hear. The scenery was beautiful. We saw the trails from the wagon days, the devastation from an avalanche, a beautiful lake, the mountains, and waterfalls. It is a very scenic route to drive. I recommend by bus if you can so you can understand the history. We would do this again.

By cart21 |

This Highway experience was filled with Awesome, Fantastic, Breathtaking views!, The road was narrow; extremely curvy, speeds of 10-40 mph. Only ride in good weather LOL! Many photo opportunities with turnouts.

By Theresa D |

This highway is very curvy with switchbacks. The scenery is spectacular. Red Mountain is one of my favorite places to photograph.

By Richard R |

I originally thought this would be just another mountain highway with nice views. But I think it may have been one of the most impressive mountain drives I've done. A sheer drop off for the 2 or 3 miles immediately south of Ouray.

By Justus3 |

This drive was spectacular. Not one I could've driven myself with the drop off edges but so fascinating.

By lorianna1 |

A must do when visiting this area. Gorgeous views. We drove from Durango to Ouray, and stopped along the way to enjoy the scenery.

By 71Joakim |

We drove from Ouray to Durango! It's a windling, beautiful road, especially in the fall with all the trees changing colour. Let it take some time, there are a lot of great wiews!

By Debkb1 |

Too many awesome sites to mention. Windy road but nicely paved. Plenty of motorhomes and cars on road so good for all vehicles. Did I mention the views?

By Tammy B |

This highway is absolutely gorgeous! It’s not a good idea to drive through if you are in a hurry, because there is so much to see, and the cliff is a bit dangerous. Well worth taking the time to drive through.

By Peter G |

Spectacular morning drive during early season snowfall. Crossed red mtn past from Silverton to Ouray. Fantastic views complemented with aspens changing color.

By stephanie b |

This drive is beautiful! Plan time to stop and take pictures. There are turnouts available. You won't regret taking the drive!

By Fred N |

I usually travel on two wheels but ended up traveling the Million Dollar Highway via 4 wheels this time. It was Labor Day weekend and the traffic was heavy. The sights were excellent. Take the time to stop and take some pictures. We enjoyed one side trip to relax by a high mountain lake. Traffic moves quick and the road isn’t for the faint of heart. No highway rails makes you concentrate on driving rather than letting yourself get distracted. I will ride this road next summer. Safe travels.

By M J |

My husband and I drove the Million Dollar Highway in May of 1993 then again May of 2019. The road is pretty scary with a cliff on one side of the road and no guard rails. The scenery is beautiful. The trip southbound is the scariest.

By Randy R |

Incredible, inspiring, beautiful, breathtaking views. The color and majesty of the mountains are truly breathtaking. The road is Winding and steep in places but worth the drive. we will drive it again even if we have to make an excuse to go somewheres else. Hey it’s on the way to a lot of places.

By saddleup3030 |

Most of this road is OK but there is one part out of Ouray that is a bit chilling if you're the car on the outside. The road is narrow and winding in places but absolutely gorgeous.

By travelingmom233 |

The Million Dollar Highway has "million dollar views" to go with it! Just be careful driving it at night! On the 19 mile stretch between north Durango and Silverton, we literally came across 12 separate deer! Luckily, we had our high-beams on and we were very diligent in looking for wild life, so we avoided an accident. However, that's a lot of potential accidents in such a short span of road!

By kirt v |

We drove from Ouray to Durango today. It’s one of the best drives I had taken would recommend it to anyone. Stopped in Silverton for lunch.

By R. Jeffrey |

If you are in this area and a nine hour train trip is just too long, you can drive the Million Dollar Highway to Silverton and back in as little as 4 hours (or even less if you're really in a hurry, but don't be). We were going to ride the train, but the weather forecast was predicting scattered heavy rains for the whole day. We decided to save the $230 it would have cost and drive there instead. I'm certain the train ride is much better but on the train you may miss photographing some great views if a downpour starts. In a car, you can pull over and wait for the shower to pass. Most of these showers were short in duration so waiting on them to pass was no problem. The train does not stop so you would miss photographing things. Silverton was an interesting place as well. I reviewed it separately. We're going to be in the area again next year. Hopefully, the weather will be a little better and we will take that train ride.

By grandmalovestravling |

In April, we got on this road by accident because GPS gave us two options and we chose the shortest one. When we started up, it had been raining and then began snowing and the snow got heavier the higher we got. We never went over 20 mph going up and sometimes it was about 10mph around the corners. We were scared we would slip off the edge! Windows started fogging up, the temperature dropped to 28 degrees as we ascended. Husband was driving, he did a great job, however I was a basket case. Could hardly look anywhere but straight ahead or down into the car. We are two 70-somethings from Florida and have never driven in ice and snow. Made it to Silverton and stopped at a gas station. Owner said people stop there all the time, white knuckled and shaking from the trip. I have since seen beautiful pictures of the road we traveled and it is indeed beautiful, and the snow was enjoyed more on the way down to Durango as we were then on the inside, next to the mountain and you could enjoy the ride a little more. Would I do it again, no. We even talked to some people that were in Durango to ride the train that lived in Grand Junction and they said that they go around, not over the mountain.

By CastellanosML |

It is a beautiful byway to ride or drive. A must see for anyone who loves the mountains. make sure you enjoy every mile.

By Kenneth P |

Certainly one of the most beautiful 20-mile rides in America. You should know how to downshift and use your gears instead of your brakes before you drive this road!

By GaryCy |

Our drive was in great sunshine. If you are the driver, expect shotgun/backseat driver to be more nervous than you! Expect that he will tell you constantly to hug the center line and slow down on the down hill curves. ("Can you go slower")

Definitely not for the faint of heart.

Definitely a one and done.

By flexitdriver |

The 25 mile portion of the 235 mile loop of the San Juan Byway is certainly scenic, but the stretch over Red Mountain with its' many switchbacks and hairpin bends provides some excitement as well as you view the many drop-offs without guard rails.

By soldoutjcforever |

I'm an incredibly wordy person but there are almost not not enough words to describe this incredibly beautiful 6 mile stretch of highway between Silverton and Ouray! Around every curve, you are in awe of the next view that is before you. The mountains loom large and beautiful and about all you can do is "ooh" and "ahh" as you drive through. There are many places to pull over and take pictures or just sit awhile and drink in the spectacular views in every direction. Drive the speed limit as you're right on the edge of tremendous drop offs.

By ibn2books |

The first time we went on this Highway, I was scared to death, but now that we have been on it several times, it doesn't bother me. The views are beautiful, especially in the fall.

By Cnieves3 |

This has one of the most beautiful landscapes I have ever seen. We started in Cortez and finished in Durango. Plenty of pull offs for beautiful pictures and rest stops. This is worth a visit and you will not be disappointed.

By Cynthia S |

This is one if the most scenic drives in the USA. Can be a little unnerving as there are no guardrails, but just take your time and use pull offs to enjoy the views.

By Mike M |

Loved the stunning views. Drove from Ouray to Silverton and back. The road certainly has a couple of white knuckle spots, but the views were worth it.

By MonkeyMama74 |

I feel silly writing a review about a road, but I have to assure those who are afraid to just go for it. After reading some of the terrifying reviews, I lay awake at night, plotting an alternate ride to Durango through Telluride, adding over an hour and a half to our trip. If the weather is good (no heavy rain), go for it. I am so glad I relented and went. The views were absolutely stunning. We pulled off at different spots to go for walks, take in the views, take pictures. Just drive slowly and use the pullouts. If you are afraid of steep drop-offs, DO NOT do the drive at Pike's Peak. That drive is one I will never do again. This highway is pure gold.

By Greg P |

The Million Dollar Highway was named because of the cost to build the road to move ore out of Silverton before rail service. It is a very beautiful drive with many options to stop for pictures or a hike.

By Cindy |

We drove from Ouray to Silverton in a 32 foot RV towing our Jeep. We had a scary experience when an oncoming 18 wheeler turned so sharply on a hairpin curve that the back of his trailer came over into our lane. Luckily we were at a place where my husband could hit the brakes and pull over to avoid a collision. It is a gorgeous drive however, if accidents happen they could be life or death. We later drove our Jeep across the highway going to Ouray and back with no problem. If we return to Silverton we will drive our RV there through Durango and only cross over the beautiful Million Dollar Highway in our smaller vehicle.

By Bgallersmith |

The countryside was stunning, with amazing vistas. Every turn brought some new and amazing view. One of the countries most memorable drives. Late September and Early October presented stunning fall colours along the slopes.

By BA |

We enjoyed our drive from Ouray to Silverton and back. We felt like it was a little nicer coming north. While there are a couple steep drop areas, the road is plenty wide and the speed limit is 25 in those areas. No need to be worried about driving it. Plenty of areas to pull off and enjoy the views. Our favorite was looking down into the town of Ouray. Took us maybe two hours just to drive and stop a handful of times. Well worth the drive.

By Turner A |

Obviously the road is amazing on views, but is treacherous at times. The views are almost worth it, but please be very careful! CO put the famous eco save a buck tar and chip in some areas. Very loose gravel. Very steep cliffs if you get too far off the road. Very unnerving. Go slow, pull off where allowed and you will have all-in pictures forever ! Frame them, hang them and show them off.....go slow.

By Ursus_Polaris |

My wife and I drove this road from Silverton to Ouray. It was early October, sunshine and the colours were just fantastic ! We are keen photograpers, and had to stop many places underway for scenic shots.

We are norwegians, and have seen much worse roads. But it mights be steep and windy in places for people who are not familiar with this type of terrain. Worth a detour !

By wadenelson |

This is an utterly fantastic road. But in some portions there is no guardrail and a steep dropoff -- there has to be --- to be able to plow snow off the road in winter. Some drivers are so fearful they hug or even cross the centerline. Some novice motorcyclists as well, so you, YOU have to drive defensively, slowly enough to stop or get outta their way. There are also trucks, 18wheelers, and RV's that clog this road especially on weekends and impatient drivers/riders making "stupid passes." The real answer is to get on the road before 5 a.m. and avoid all the traffic which will also allow you better passing opportunities. Stay safe, have fun, but stay in your own lane!

By Michael T |

We did the Million Dollar Highway when we stayed in Ouray. This road is not for the faint hearted. The road extends right to the edge with a large drop off in many places. It is about 12 miles long and is worth the drive. The views are spectacular and you won't be disappointed.

By Pat L |

Heading south, you need some strong nerves. No guardrails make the drive a bit challenging for the first 1/3 of the way. But truly beautiful even in shoulder season.

By Jessica S |

This is one of those magical places we all must visit to truly understand the vast beauty this part of America holds.

Spent the morning in Ouray and drove the million dollar highway as the 2nd stop of the day. We could have easily spent hours driving this terrifying road, but has the most beautiful scenery and great hikes!

By Shelly H |

Though this drive is a tad nerve wracking in some areas don't let that deter you from seeing amazing majestic views! It is breathtaking!

By Tread_Morr |

The Million Dollar Highway between Silverton and Ouray offers amazing views of the mountains, old mines, waterfalls, and the town of Ouray. If you have a fear of heights or are unsure about traveling on a high road with sheer drop offs and no guard rails, you should consider and alternate route or just avoid this section of 550 altogether. We have travelled this road numerous times and love the views.

By Jaskel08 |

Beyond breathtaking. Definitely a must do! We traveled in the morning from Ouray to Durango. The highlight (most scenic) part of the trip was definitely between Ouray and Silverton. The highway is located on the side of a cliff within a narrow chasm/canyon that is surrounded by vertical peaks of 13,000 ft elevation. IMO, driving southbound is less nerve wracking then driving northbound.

Just south of Ouray is Bear Creek Falls. There’s a turnout on the east side of the highway from which to check it out.

Well paved, well maintained, mostly no barriers between the road and the cliff. Definitely watch the speed limit signs. I don’t believe the speed limit went over 40 MPH between Ouray and Silverton…… with many sections at 25 or 30 MPH. There are periodic turnouts for sightseeing. There are also plenty of passing lanes…. To pass those who are going atypically slow.

Tip….. make sure you fill up your gas tanks. There were not many gas stations between Durango and Ouray.

By Bev. |

A must drive for such beautiful scenery And wilderness. The small towns on the way are friendly and great to see the history in Silverton. Too many to mention but a drive worth taking

By AMsays |

I had started this journey from Montrose, but that part to Silverton has been described already in my bus trip. This 25 mile stretch from Silverton to Ouray, requires extreme concentration to avoid potential catastrophic consequences. Not only the twisting road full of hairpin turns, mountain passes Coal Bank, Molas and Red Mountain but also weather-related phenomenon like mist and fog and for me, the daunting experience of diminished sunlight at sunset. The scenery is spectacular, full of the last colours of fall interspersed with the majestic mountains, glorious gorges and verdant valleys. But still, watch the road too, you’ll be tempted otherwise.

By gypsyuno |

On a recent road trip we drove from Durango north on US 550, known as the San Juan Skyway. The stretch from Silverton to Ouray is also known as the Million Dollar Highway. We drove the Durango - Silverton segment last year, but this was the first time in many years I had been on the Million Dollar Highway north to Ouray and beyond. The road is really an engineering marvel all the way from Durango. To say that the scenery is spectacular, majestic and breathtaking is an understatement. This has got to be one of the most gorgeous and impressive mountain drives in North America, if not the whole world. The most impressive, from the standpoint of the engineering involved, is Red Mountain Pass south of Ouray. Hairpin curve after hairpin curve, and the speed limit doesn’t matter – the most you can do is about 10 miles per hour. This is not a road for idle driving, and obviously it won’t be open all the time in the winter. This is the first time I have driven this road for many years, and as you can probably tell, I am super impressed with it once again.

Beautiful scenery, words do not do it justice!! Loved the drive and the view!! Totally would do it again!!

Great drive. The road leaving Ouray is very curvy and there are no guard rails on the west side, so caution is advised. Have driven this road several times and never had a problem. If you’re driving north you will be on the Mountain side. Driving south you will be on the cliff side

At the end of May we drove from Durango to Montrose on Million Dollar Highway. The road was scary in a few sections. The views were amazing.

By Krr1975 |

What a drive! Beautiful views! This is a must do drive. Well worth it! Several places to pull off for photos. Don’t miss this if I’m the area!

By ParksRCalling |

Stunning views, especially this time of year when the leaves are changing. Much more yellow on the Silverton side of the pass, as they must be a little higher in elevation than Ouray, where we came from. The scary parts weren’t quite as scary as I feared, but you still need to be super cautious. We saw elk run across about a half mile in front of us at one point. Absolutely loved this drive, most scenic part of our colorado trip so far!

By Debbie F |

Spent the day jeeping. First time ever not being on this highway that it was not being worked on.
This is a must do if ever in Southwest Colorado. Absolutely beautiful.

By mpandd |

Such a BEAUTIFUL motorcycle ride! Beauty is everywhere I am so very happy that we were able to ride it all the way to Durango and then onto New Mexico prior to the fires starting last week. We were so blessed! HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS AS A RIDE OR A DRIVE FOR EVERYONE TO SEE!

BREATHTAKING!

By Bernard H |

Road with several passes at more than 3000m: it's beautiful in Durango at the start and it snows at the pass crossings with very slippery roads (given an accident), especially with rental vehicles rarely equipped with snow tires
(renting an AWD is also a plus for the slopes)
Otherwise the landscapes “seemed” indeed superb
Allow a day between Durango and Ouray with a visit to Silverton + a few viewpoints on the road

By LisaMNUSA |

We drove this road from Ouray to Silverton at the end September, the view was incredibly beautiful, the mountain ranges, lakes and bright yellow fall colors,
I read some reviews before our trip, this road was scary for some people, was OK for others. I was not sure what to expect, but certainly concerned about safety.
When I just got on the road for a short time, we reached a part of switchbacks and 15 speed limit. I was driving between 10 to 15, made sure I was not driving over the speed limit. There was a big van behind me and followed me closely. Finally there was a pullout, I pulled over and let the car pass me. When it was passing me, the driver drove very fast and beeped at me. I saw the car was bigger than mine, and the driver drove above the speed limit, suddenly I don't feel scared anymore. But people should let others drive at a speed they are comfortable with, isn't safety the most thing? If there is car crash on this road, it would be very bad. There are some pullouts along the way, it might be better if there are more.
My husband sat on the passage seat, he was afraid of height. When we drove by a segment without guardrail and sheer drop off, he couldn't looked at his side, but forward. Most part of this drive wasn't bad at all, but the view is beautiful.

By Sandra Wellman |

Decided to drive over from Durango, my husband had sweaty hands by the time we got there. A little scary but absolutely beautiful!!

By Cindy R |

Outstanding views! One of the highlights of our trip, highly recommend. Keep your eyes on the road and drive safely!

By Tim B |

The drive between Silverton and Ouray is a must for anyone who loves a good mountain drive. Lots of twists and turns with beautiful pull offs, little waterfalls, and awesome little towns. End your trip in the Ouray Hot Springs or Box Canyon Falls.

By Fei L |

We visited Colorado at the end of September. It was spectacular everywhere. We drove from Ouray to Silverton through million dollar highway. It was not too difficult to drive through. There are a lot of pull offs that we can stop to enjoy the areas. Aspen leaves are golden, truly beautiful!

By Asa49 |

My wife sat peacefully and thoroughly entranced with the natural beauty along this route. I, on the other hand, was a white knuckled mess who wound up cursing in languages I’ve never learned. Seriously though, the drive is not bad in good weather and only gets scary for the last ten miles going into Silverton from Durango. Lots of beautiful scenery the whole way.

By Jane E |

The views were amazing and the drive (Ouray to Durango) was not nearly as bad as I expected based on online comments. We were on the land side most of the drive, but even in the reverse direction, there are guardrails on the worst of the curves. Probably not for people troubled by heights but absolutely not the worst drive we did here in Colorado

By Lesley S |

You must take this drive out of Silverton - just take your time to be safe - very windy road with great views!

By siglerk76 |

We drove there with our four kids that from time to time pick their heads up from the devices and looked at the view, but me and my wife did not care, we loved it. It stretches for 50 miles but the best part is closer to Silverton and was the most breathtaking view of it all.
Drive slowly and enjoy the view, stop at any stop area that you want and have fun, don't rush the road.
It is a must see if you are in the area.

By houstonnative47 |

This drive on Highway 550 is a must do for anyone visiting Colorado. If driving from Ouray south toward Silverton, the road is more challenging. There are many twists and turns with drop offs on your right side so the driver has to pay attention while the passenger bites their fingernails and holds on to the arm rest! The views are spectacular especially when we went the first week of October 2019. The aspen trees were changing colors so we stopped to take pictures when we could. Try it so you can say you did it!

By BeachBum |

I don't like heights and I have to admit, parts of this road were a little intimidating, but well worth it. I would definitely travel this road again. Small gold mine towns and absolutely stunning views. Put this on your bucket list.

By rickwytt |

If you have never been to sout West Colorado this drive is a must ! Starting from Ridgeway to Durango the drive is magical you’ll drive on a two lane highway that would match anything in Switzerland Alps. The canyon itself is wonderful the waterfalls are equal the wildlife is everywhere the ascent up to almost 13,000 feet is amazing. You can’t do it during winter but spring, summer and especially fall with all the colors would match anything on the east coast. You can stop in Silverton Co to see a town from the 1800s boom of mining and left back in time. If your an off road enthusiast there are a lot of Jeep trails that are for the most part not for the light hearted. This drive is a must if your going to visit Colorado !

By RailFan1962 |

I read somewhere that there are 155 curves between Silverton and Ouray - believe it! Very curvy road and not for the faint at heart. You are reward with tremendously beautiful sights. Make sure to drink plenty of water as it will help with altitude issues you may experience.

By Marsha C |

We vacationed in Denver and decided to take the several hour drive to the Million Dollar Highway and are so glad we did; well worth the time and effort. It's dangerous, scary, and beautiful.....all at the same time. Unfortunately, our 'check engine' light came on, which was very concerning on this road, so we returned to the cute town of Ourey and spent the night. It's a shame this is so far away from just about everything because we'd love to go back, but this was probably a once-in a-lifetime visit for us. Highly recommend it.

By tkdjkd |

If you’re in a hurry, do not take this route. But it is so beautiful!!! It is worth the time!! (Check ahead for road closures from mud slides.)

By Martha W |

My girlfriend and I traveled on the Million Dollar Highway in late September as part of our 25 day road trip. Before we left I read many reviews and I was sooo worried about driving it. I am a 66 year old woman and I am NOT

an experienced mountain driver. So "fear" had me convinced that we could possibly go over the edge at Red Mountain Pass. Whatever you do don't let "fear" stop you! It was absolutly beautiful! The aspens were stunning! We were driving from South to North and as far as drop offs that is the best way to go. I know it would had been more scary driving from North to South. But I would absolutly do it either way. Just take your time. There are many places to pull over and left cars go around, which is what I did, I didn't want to feel rushed. So my friend, Just Do It! "Fear Not"! You will not be so glad you did!

By debinatorColorado |

Took us about 2.5 hours to drive because of all the Kodak moment stops along the way! Amazing scenery and twisty road, makes for a million $ trip!

By steben53 |

The San Juans are perhaps the most magnificent range in all the Rockies if not the world. A not-to-be-missed ride for motorcyclists!

By Michyb |

We loved this drive and were impressed with the quality of the highway roads. a great way to get around.

By antheaholloway |

We love this road with its wonderful views of the Rockies. The height of the road reaches to over 11,000 feet through mountain passes. There are few crash barriers, if any, and you need to concentrate on driving unless you pull off into one of the special lay-bys. The drive from Durango to Silverton is particularly scenic.

By HabariSafari |

Don’t miss this! It has some of the most breathtaking scenery Colorado has to offer! There are pull-offs along the way so you can take pictures. There are even some old mines to explore.

By D L |

We hit this by luck, but what a show...just as the aspens were turning near peak. beautiful. Highway can be tight, and I wouldn't recommend for large RVs. not because it isn't drivable, but why would you want to concentrate on a tough road when you can stop, go, and enjoy the scenery. Recommend 8-10 in the morning or 4-5 in the PM for best views. We had absolutely clear, blue skies/no smoke.

By Shari A |

We drive this beautiful stretch of Highway from Ouray to Silverton and we are so glad we did. We were a little nervous but just took it slow. The views are out of this world beautiful! If you’re the driver you won’t be able to enjoy them as much, but wow! Totally worth it!

By Cathi T |

Absolutely amazing! No rails made it scary at times and it is not for those afraid of heights. The scenary was amazing and lots of places to pull off and get a picture.

By Scott M |

We just rode 550 Montrose to Durango.
Breath taking. from Ouray to Silverton you can’t take your eyes off the road.

By Jen W |

We hadn’t heard of the Million Dollar Highway until we were already in the area and had little other option than to drive it.

In a car, it would be wonderful. The views are truly stunning.

In an older RV, even in low gear, we had to stop for awhile in Silverton to cool the brakes. It’s a cute town, and we ate dinner there. Then we had to stop again for 20 minutes at a pull-out within sight of Ouray.

What we expected to be about a 3-hour trip (from Mesa Verde NP to Ouray) ended up taking 6. I very much wish we had taken Highway 145 and now know you can look up route descriptions of highways on Wikipedia!

By Robert C |

We have driven the route from Durango to Silverton many times and from Silverton to Ouray twice. We never cease to be amazed by the beautiful natural scenery! The drive is a very easy drive (in our SUV) but the driver needs to attend to driving as there many spots that are sheer drop-offs with no guard rails. That said, the roads are keep up really well and is not a dangerous drive at all. The road between Silverton and Ouray has lots of sections with many curves but a beautiful drive! This route is certainly a must see!

By laurapaul2018 |

The climb and switchbacks and views are all very impressive, not for the faint of heart but totally worth the drive, relax and enjoy! Lots of ups and downs and twists and turns and changes in elevations. Nothing at Baker's Bridge that we saw of too much interest.

By Donna D |

I am a 60+ female from the delta of Arkansas where there are no hills or mountains. So, before deciding to drive this road I read a lot of reviews here on TA and elsewhere on the internet. I was pretty nervous about driving it after reading the reviews and comments I found. I had read that you needed to be experience in mountain driving to attempt this road. Many said they would never drive/ride it again. After our experience today I will say I'd go back in a heart beat. The fall foliage was just beautiful!! The scenery we saw was fantastic. It is a road to respect and take your time on. I LOVED it. We drove south to north which was not as scary as it would have been going north to south.

By Laura |

That’s all I can say about this road! The sceneries are incredible! Hang on and enjoy the ride! From Ouray to Silverton the curves twists and views are one of a kind.

By Debbie M |

Colors were spectacular. Light snow in the mountains. Views were amazing. No traffic. Drove up to Ouray from Durango and back.

By Jill F |

Drove from Silverton to Telluride and back after a long stop in Ouray. Views do not disappoint. I don't think this is a safe highway for cyclist as the curves are blinding.

By Janet F |

Beautiful, high mountain road between Silverton and Ouray. There are some steep drop offs and not too many guard rails, so drive carefully, but don’t miss this awesome road. The scenery is stunning. Stop at the pull outs for some awesome views.

By BlessedMamaWeaver |

WOW! just WOW! This was the most incredible drive, amazing views, and they just kept coming! The road is narrow and winds throughout, so if you get car sick this is Not the drive for you. So many photo opportunities and places to pull off and hike around. The towns of Silverton and Ouray were awesome. Telluride is another stop as well that is a must see.

By Autumn P |

We were following gps to Ophir pass to earn our first jeep trail badge and holy smokes accidentally ended up on this road. Yes it's beautiful. Ouray looked like a cool stop. This road is not for the meek. I'm scared of heights my hubs drove...i was clutching for my life. Exciting and scary and the most beautiful views.

By ddknip |

I traveled over the highway to get to Ouray, even though there was road construction, the turnouts has breath taking views.

By Michael S |

Twisty turns combined with switchbacks as high as 11,000 feet this road is incredible. It has NO BARRIERS on the outside edge, just a 1000 foot drop to the river below. It takes some concentration to drive it well. You'll compete with motorcycles, motor homes, and dump trucks as you negotiate these curves back and forth, up and down. It's exhilarating, but as others have said, not for the feint of heart. As they say in Silverton (9600 feet) and a must stop, "Sea level is for sissies."

By Tamara C |

We consider ourselves seasoned travelers and have been all over the west, and this drive on sept 14 during the 2 hours before sunset was incredible- such colors and contrasts and hairpin turns! So worth the choice to take this route through Ouray between Durango and Denver - simply unforgettable.

By misty_bee_Wyo |

When I travel, my mapping app routes aren’t always terribly detailed. For instance, I knew I’d be heading south on Highway 50, but at no point did the directions clarify that I would be merging to a spur of Hwy 50 -Highway 550- on my route, or that a portion of said route would include the Million Dollar Highway. Nor would it have meant anything to me if it did. I’ve never heard of the Million Dollar Highway, because you know what’s not on my bucket list? Driving any of the world’s top 12 most dangerous roads. Nonetheless, that’s what happened. They don’t even give you any warning, and once you’re on it, it’s too late to turn back. There should be a sign “MILLION DOLLAR HIGHWAY AHEAD -ONE OF THE WORLD’S 12 MOST DANGEROUS ROADS”
The most narrow road imaginable winding through sheer cliffs with nothing but hairpin curves and 10,000 ft drops, all with no guardrail and no shoulder whatsoever, the asphalt just ends abruptly in a sharp edge inches from the white line and your tires are way too close to that white line and certain death. That’s what really got me. The way the edge of the road just dropped off into nothing inches from my tires.
I was legitimately terrified, no lie. Vertigo hit so hard that my brain floated.

(Yes, it was beautiful. I think I would have liked it on a motorcycle where I wasn’t so close to the edge, I didn’t love it in a large vehicle though. It’s a 5 on sheer beauty, but a 1 for being a terrifying road when you’re not expecting it ;) )

(Since I made it over alive, I looked up the road and the reviews are spot on. One passenger said she just curled into the fetal position in the car and cried the whole time. I feel that. I couldn’t indulge because I was driving the damn car. Another guy who’s scuba dived with sharks and zip lined off a volcano said driving this road’s the only thing that ever terrified him. I feel that, too, buddy. 😑)

We were camping near Ouray and wanted to go to Durango on our way back to NM. My husband and I have driven this highway before, years ago. It's beautiful, but this time we were pulling a camper. The highway is narrow, no guard rails, lots of mountain switchbacks. We did OK pulling the camper, didn't fall off LOL! Take your time, enjoy the views.

By Ankit R |

Worst , drive it if want to risk your life. Not recommended at all . It’s just too much dangerous drive . Google it before you go drive

By chitownsam |

Great views on the 23 mile drive between Ouray and Silverton. Can be very windy in parts. If the sign for the curve says 10 or 15 mph, don’t try it at 35. As long as you keep your speed to around the (varying) speed limit,it’s not a hard drive. There are occasional drop offs and very few guardrails. Lack of guardrails makes it easier to push snow off the highway. There is a great viewpoint to Bear Falls a couple miles south of Ouray but you aren’t given any signage to this in either direction. Easier to notice it on the southbound drive to Silverton.

By John J |

We took the Million Dollar Hwy on our way to Durango from Aspen. It is not to be missed and not for the faint of heart with steep drop offs and few guardrails. Another warning is for animals crossing the road. Luckily, I was going the speed limit as a deep jumped out of the mountain and onto the road. She turned her head to me and then scampered off down to the valley. Pretty startling, but so cool. I was very lucky to have time to stop. The scenery is beautiful, and we were fortunate enough to have a sunny morning day to travel.

By Roy Martin |

Had traveled this road as a kid and had forgotten how beautiful and exciting the trip. Best part is from Silverton to Ouray...don't miss it!

By Chris T |

Well made road through postcard picture perfect area of Colorado. Stir in history and this easy drive from Durango to Silverton is well worth it. No guardrails in some spots, so I recommend sticking to the speed limits at all times.

By msa23_2000 |

Great drive with views. Go from Ouray to Silverton, but be aware you are driving right on the edge of a cliff. Enjoy the views they are spectacular

By Anne T |

The million dollar highway is a really must. Breath taking every time. You must not be afraid of heights cuz the road has no guard rails.

By tLynn18 |

We drove this out of Ouray on our way to Silverton. What a beautiful drive! My daughter and I drove our 21 ft GMC PU truck and my husband drove our 34 ft motorhome behind us. We could have hooked up but decided not to because it wasn't a very long drive to Silverton. We just took it at the suggested speed signs and had no issues. There aren't guard rails so it can be unnerving at times. I had my daughter take photos while I watched the road.

By JBRetired |

Look at it as an adventure if your driving. The section closest to Ouray has some sections you really have to pay attention. A lot of twists and turns but fun to drive. The passenger on the other hand is treated to some in readable views. Yes the driver gets the views but must watch the road

By CocoChanel05 |

For car enthusiasts and not, the Million Dollar Highway is absolutely amazing, gorgeous, scary, and thrilling! The switchbacks, curves, and hairpins are a fun, thrilling and scary (no guardrails and the drops are enormous) drive! So worth the drive from Durango to Silverton. We were considering the train ride from Durango to Silverton but did not want to be on their schedule to experience the area. We did see the train and drop off in Silverton (mad rush of people descending on downtown shops and restaurants, then a rush to get back on board). We wanted to drive at our pace, make stops and explore Silverton and so glad we did! The Silverton Welcome Center is in an old historic 1800s house and worth a visit (and has restrooms). The downtown consists of 2 streets and a park. The downtown buildings are historic and there are plenty of browsing opportunities. The Coffee Bear on the Main Street is good (prices in line with what you expect from a coffee place - my hot latte with caramel was very good and hit the spot). The history of Silverton Main Street and Blair Street is very interesting. We decided to drive a bit farther north on Million Dollar Highway and saw lots of mining shafts, old mining railroad tracks, remnants of ore deposits on the surrounding mountains, and gorgeous pines and aspens. Really beautiful drive to explore the mining around Silverton. The Million Dollar Highway goes farther north from Silverton and we will add more time to drive farther north on the next trip. Perhaps a sports car for the drive would be very fun! Highly recommend driving the Million Dollar Highway from Durango to Silverton!

By Debbi D |

Gorgeous scenery, beautiful drive. Drove from Durango to Ouray for lunch. No guardrails and steep cliffs. We drove in the rain in June. A little scary, but we had a confident driver. The views are amazing.

By Vince G |

We travel a lot, and always travel designated scenic routes if possible. This is one at he top of our list. There are many pullouts where you can pull over and let the locals pass by if you are taking your time, so don't get in a hurry. The views are beautiful everywhere, and there is quite a bit of wildlife if that is what you like. If you are in the area, do not miss this.

By Luvt0travel63 |

This area is simply beautiful. We drove south from Ouray to Silverton, on some very narrow cliff-like roads with no guardrails (we learned from a local that there are no guardrails so they can push the snow off the road in the winter). The mountains are spectacular, and around every bend there are new vistas to take in. Photos cannot do it justice. Colorado is one of our favorite states and we continue to discover beautiful places. The historic Victorian towns, Ouray and Silverton, are worth a visit. .

By Gary W |

Incredible splendor & splashes of color around every turn. Aspens are in stages of golden hues, chartreuse & variable oranges.

By Tuxtails |

Beautiful drive from Durango, Silverton and Ouray. The mountains are gorgeous, I would love to see this in fall. We actually camped outside Silverton and Ouray. Would love to come back and spend more time in the towns and go over to Telluride. Only a couple scary spots on this drive.

By Anthony M |

I have been through several mountain ranges in NM and Arizona. This Million Dollar Hwy trip was breathtaking. The sharp curves and steep declines can be a bit nerve raking but worth it.

By Carrie W |

Perfectly Beautiful and Kind of Frightening! Everyone must check it out at least once. We didn't realize that there are no guardrails and that the elevation was so high. That didn't change the fact that this is probably the most spectacular view in the world.

By Jackie K |

Love this road! You will experience beautiful Colorado scenery plus a somewhat adrenaline filled trip since much of the road does not have guard rails! Don’t look down!

By 180diannem |

We have driven this highway several and are amazed everytime. Beautiful views, pretty little yellow river and aspen groves all along the way. It can be a bit scary the first time but I don't know if the road has been improved over the years or we just got use to it. We have also taken the train from Durago to Silverton but love the drive from Ouray to Silverton. The little village of Silverton is so unoique and has several very good restaurants. Our favorite is the Brown Bear Cafe. Great food every time and the sweetest staff ever. This makes a great day trip if you are in the area even for the kids!! They will love the gift shops and of course the ice cream parlor!

By Jukka W |

Just beautiful sceneries on winding road between the mountains. Nice lookout places as well and possibility to see some old mining places was a great bonus. Sadly didn't see any wildlife.

By TCB |

Beyond breathtaking!!!! We came in October when the leaves are at full fall bloom with colors....just amazing! Stop off, take the pup out into the trails, and take lots of pictures!

By JEAN MARC L |

Views are worth it. This was my fourth time on this highway and the views are amazing. The snow on the mountains made it all worthwhile. highly recommend. top 10 drive in north america.

By okeydokey-pa |

We flew into the Montrose Airport for our stay in Durango. The views on this road are unbelievable! The driving is very scary. As most reviewers state, lots of switchbacks and steep drop offs. I went slow and if there were vehicles behind me, I usually found a safe spot to pull off and let them pass. On the way back to the airport after our vacation, we unfortunately had rain and fog. Then this road was terrifying. We had 2 vehicles in our family travelling this road. I did ok. But the 2nd person was petrified. She is a city girl, so this road really freaked her out. If we ever go to Durango again, I would probably find an alternate route or alternate airport. If I was staying in Ouray and didn't have to travel the whole road, I probably would do this again and stop at the wonderful areas.

By Sherry R |

Worth the drive! Being afraid of heights and reading numerous reviews on terrifying the drive is, I was hesitant on taking this route, but I am so happy we did! We drove from Ouray to Durango (which is often deemed the scarier route as you are on the cliff side). My partner drove, so I was on the “scary side” of the vehicle, however there were only a few minutes where I felt uneasy.
As long as you follow the speed limits, take the curves with caution and drive responsibly, you will be fine!
Absolutely stunning scenery with cute mountain towns along the route to stop for a break. Also, a decent number of areas to safely pull off to enjoy the views and take photos.

By Grammy |

I was visiting Cortez CO and after a day in Mesa Verde needed something less strenuous to do. I started driving the San Juan scenic byway to Ridgeway then headed back on the Million Dollar Highway. The views were spectacular! I was warned about the curves and switchbacks but after driving Ebbits Pass in California these were no problem. The leaves had started to change and the color contrast was beautiful. The biggest problem was the drivers who were afraid and would not go the speed limit.

By CREY70 |

We did this in a 32 foot RV. Beautiful views. Drive slow, many very tight turns. Great stops along the way is Silverton and Ouray.

By rich65k |

10 motorcycles (couples). What an amazing ride! Breathtaking scenery and views. Lots of curves and steep drop offs with no railings so it's not for the faint of heart. Bring your camera.

By Terri D |

Let someone else drive so you can see the terrain! Some real nail-biters and fun to experience. I was amazed at the number of tractor-trailer rigs that actually took this route. Watch your speed when you come back down...its really easy to tax your brakes, otherwise. Very cool pull-outs with historical mining info. Those guys had to be TOUGH!

By VincePCTD |

Ouray to Durango, vice versa, Silverton or anywhere in between you will find something awesome and interesting to see or do. Today's Red Mountain Pass is a breeze in the summer, but still a challenge for the squeamish.

Don't just do a drive by on this one. Plan significant time to stop often.

By Doug K |

If you are terrified of heights this might not be your favorite route but honestly as Colorado roads go this one is pretty tame.

By Rob R |

This is an incredible stretch of mountainous American road, with fascinating history! In the summer, traffic can be busy during the day, as RVs and other tourists make their way from Ouray to Silverton, then on to Purgatory @ DMR and Durango, or the reverse. This stretch of road offers many places to pull over and take a hike or take in the view. Don't hesitate to use "Colorado-courtesy," and let speedier motorists by when you can. Look out for bicyclists, motorcyclists, and wildlife. Don't ever be surprised at construction projects happening any time of the year; this road takes a beating! During winter, the passes sometimes close because of avalanche hazard and avalanche mitigation work. Check cotrip.org to stay up on the latest road conditions on the 550 Million Dollar Highway! Be safe, and enjoy!

By bigpittstop |

I will admit I had to suck in a little at some of the close drop offs, but do the pullouts and see the views. Then have dinner and catch your breath in Ouray

By gwendiscovery |

This road runs between Ouray and Durango, Colorado. Its curves and turns offer dramatic views of the mountains
and the valley below. The road is well maintained but 2 way traffic only with no guard rails. So simply be very careful. People drive it all the time. We drove our RV with no problem but we needed to be very careful.

By Durango550 |

This is one of the great drives of Colorado. The scenery is drop dead stunning on a narrow and twisting road. I love the drive which has one dramatic view after another, but some though might take it slow with few guard rails on the west side.

By Snowbikers |

If you visit Durango this is a MUST DO drive to make.
There are no words to fully describe the majesty of the mountains and the story of the making of the road.
It is a must venture when you visit the area.

By Scenic581487 |

We have came to Ouray twice and made day trips to Silverton for food and activities. Best views, photo opps galore, my favorite.

By so-many-dreams |

A scenic route through the mountains with plenty of opportunities for a photo stop. The road is wide and leads over two passes. And it is not difficult to drive, as some people write. There are completely different serpentines in Austria or Norway.

By Mark H |

This sinuous piece of pavement is one of the reasons for a motorcycle trip to Colorado. Of course, the state has many roads that are outstanding, but what’s nice about this one is that is so long and you have to string a bunch of roads together.

What makes it great for motorcycles is we can easily and safely pass in no passing so zones, unlike cars. You’ll find most motorists in cars will pull over slightly and let you pass them safely.

Yes the scenery is spectacular, however some people may be unnerved by the lack of guard rails in certain areas. They are plenty of places to pull over and make photos.

Highly recommend.

By IndianRd18 |

The views from Ouray to Durango are truly magnificent, there’s nothing else like it. I’ve driven it twice myself and experienced it as a child with my parents on family vacations. I’ve never felt unsafe, but I have not driven it in inclement weather. Take advantage of the pull outs to stop and get pictures or just soak in the unparalleled beauty offered by the snow-covered peaks of the Rockies. The waterfall, mines, and the bluest Colorado skies will not disappoint.

By mikeS7619 |

Spent 5 days in Ouray and drove the highway to get to some off road trails and abandoned mines so did 5 laps between Ouray and Silverton. Some beautiful sites and a wide range too, from a waterfall to off road trails, to mountains and old mines. The road itself was typical, it's all about the surrounding scenery.

I strongly recommend against taking a sport bike there due to many of the turns having decreasing and increasing radius angles so you really have to pay attention. Add in the very slow traffic and it is not a fun road on a sport bike.

By G W R |

This was an amazing drive. If shear drop offs and hairpin turns without a guard rail appeal, this is for you. I learned later from a narrated trip on the Durango Silverton train that this road does not have guard rails for a reason. In the winter, when they plow the road, they just push the snow off the edge of the road (aka cliff). They would not be able to do that with guard rails. I also learned this is the most dangerous road in the country. In the summer it was beautiful. I hate to think of driving it in the winter, or even worse driving a plow.

The 23-mile drive from Ouray to Silverton, CO features absolutely fabulous views on an incredibly nerve-racking road. It's completely worth it, though. My family goes on a lot of scenic drives and this was one of the best I've ever experienced, hands down. Lots of hairpin turns and fairly steep grades, plus big sections of it have no guard rail or shoulder between you and a drop-off. Takes about 90 minutes if you're careful, which you absolutely should be since so much of the road is in shadow and therefore has a tendency to hold ice, but it's a stunning journey both directions. Keep an eye out for deer (elk?) and abandoned mining equipment along the way.

By Saba |

The most spectacular Highway I have ever been to!! Gorgeous views all around but also gave me jitters as most part of the highway does not have rails. The driver needs to be extra careful with eyes on the road only. We went on it twice and couldnt stop raving.

By Tim B |

Great vistas and beautiful snow covered peaks. A good taste of the mountain roads and mining activity in the region. A must do for anyone visiting the area.

By Charles043 |

We came upon the most beautiful fall foliage vista I can ever recall setting my eyes or lens on descending Coal Bank Pass into Silverton on a very rainy day. The light is so even on wet days like this, good visibly, no shadows, a pure 360 degree Aspen glow!

The Million Dollar Highway is a marvelous road in excellent condition.

I've done the White Mountains, Green Mountains, Smokey Mountains, Alps, and more. Nothing ever topped this.

By Irishmamma2 |

Kind of nerve racking driving parts of this, but beautiful. My husband was very nervious. Lots of curves but you can make it. Locals will go flying around you and i don't know how those people pulling those HUGE camper do it? Silverton is a great place to sight see. Old buildings, cool shops and restuants. You must keep going and visit Ouray. gorgeous!!!! and if you do, stop in Mouse's Chocolate and Coffee and get a mouse scrap cookie! Its to die for!!!! Ymmmmm!!!

By fratwin |

If you can get here in the fall this is a great drive. The colors were absolutely beautiful. You do have to pay attention to the road, but there are places to pull over and take on the sights. Well worth the drive.

By MSK |

So, So glad we decided to make the drive. God's artwork and the people that built this highway put together a great trip.

By tbgrewal |

Colorado has so much scenic beauty. Almost any drive across the state which involves crossing or travelling through the Rockies is simply breathtaking. The scenery is not breathtaking on the Million Dollar Highway but nor is it boring. Stop and have a drink or meal along the way and take in the scenery and the fresh air. Lovely.

By rpsandyfeet |

I get severe motion sickness and even with getting sick, it was worth it. The views are amazing. We really enjoyed spending time in Ouray. It is such a cute little town.

By Ted M |

I have been on the Shenandoah Parkway. I have driven some wonderful roads in the Ozarks, the Smoky Mountains, and other beautiful places in the US. I hope to one day drive the Pacific Coast Highway. But this drive is a truly beautiful and spectacular trip.

By GlobeTrotting425738 |

Traveled from Durango to Silverton and it was awesome. The views are something you expect to see on a postcard. The colors were beautiful. On the way back we took a 12 mike off road drive (4x4) recommended. Across Old Lime Creek Rd. The views were amazing! I would move to this region in a heartbeat.

By Kevin W |

Let me begin by saying that if you would go through and look at all the bad reviews of this road, you'd find they all have one thing in common, most of those folks are scared of heights (or probably are) so if you are then you won't enjoy this. If you are a jeeper then the grades, curves and drop offs won't phase you. I can understand why some people would be scared by this road but, after the first trip we took to Colorado where we mistakenly wound up on a 1 and a quarter lane two way jeep road in Pike National forest in a Grand Prix with drop offs just like this, going down a normal size two lane paved road, doesn't seem so menacing even with the same steep long drop offs. What I think should be mentioned that I don't see mentioned in other reviews, is that for the 12 miles of the road that are sketchy (the actual part referred to as the million dollar highway), you're not exactly doing 50 down the highway. In that stretch the speed limits are in the range of 15-25 MPH so you'd really have to mess up bad to get yourself into a precarious situation. Going south you're on the outside lane, going north you're on the inside. For those that do make the trip and aren't doing the driving you won't get better views from a road anywhere else. I highly suggest making two trips so whoever drove the first time can be the passenger on the second trip and take it all in because the views are not to be missed.

Such a beautiful mountain drive. Beautiful views and horizons between Ouray and Silverton. Worth the trip

By christopherbO9687MP |

The Million Dollar Highway is an incredible scenic mountain road with little traffic to spoil the views. Plan to take your time on this road; there are a lot of switchback curves (think 15 MPH speed limits on those stretches) and a lot of mule deer wandering next to the highway to avoid.

Be sure your gas tank (or EV batteries) are full; towns with services or restaurants are few in the middle of this national forest. Also be sure your vehicle is in good shape; the brakes, steering system and engine will get a workout. I did part of this at night; you're not as tempted to be distracted by the great views but the curves can come upon you quickly.

By AuntieMame |

Every Fall we drive this route down to Durango. Every year it is magnificent. The colors are beyond beautiful and the weather can change at anytime. I have been there in the month of September and it snowed. There are wild Moose I recently learned down toward Red Mountain before you enter Silverton. Look to the east of the road along the water

By Rbusse |

The Million Dollar Highway has views that are spectacular especially in October when all of the Aspen leaves are golden. The road winds between Durango and Silverton and then onto Ouray! The best part of the ride is between Silverton and Ouray. Switchbacks, curves, and scenery that is breathtaking. Also one can see the remains of mining activity. Enjoy the Ride!

By Chas87714 |

We drove from Durango, through Silverton, and up to Ouray. The views from this highway are incredible. It winds and goes through several mountain passes. You can see rivers, waterfalls, 14,000 foot tall mountains, wildlife, and lots of historic mining equipment.

By Georgia L |

Traveling between Silverton and Ouray in the fall is absolutely beautiful...the mountains are painted in gold...a must do if you’re in the area!

By Local50 |

We drove on the section between Ouray and Silverton. Lots of winding curves, amazing scenery, scary drop offs. Part of the road was down to one lane for repairs due to a mudslide from heavy rains after the fire. Very thankful for this because this was the scariest part of the road. The side closed off was where the white line was the final edge of the road - no room for error here as there was no shoulder - so we drove on the “safer” side. This was one of the highlights of our trip and glad we drove to Silverton. Also loved Silverton - the modern day Wild West town.

By PamRoad |

We drove this drive expecting gorgeous mountain scenery and were not disappointed. This can be a dangerous road. There are lost of twisty curves with no shoulders, steep drop-offs and no railings! The mountains, valleys, waterfalls and lakes are amazing. Bring a fully charged camera with plenty of space on your camera card! The road is demanding enough that the driver won't be able to enjoy much of the scenery, but there are plenty of turnouts to stop and gaze.
We encountered significant snow / sleeting with temps in the 30's in the mountain passes outside of Ouray and Silverton, even though is was sunny and 60's in the towns, so be prepared for the weather to change quickly.
If you are anywhere near Hwy 550, this is a MUST-SEE scenic drive!

By philip g |

I had been waiting years to visit this highway on our motorcycle. It was everything I expected it to be and more. The views were breathtaking. The one thing I didn't expect was that some people do not have any regard for the lives of others. There are semi trucks on some of this road and cars and regular size trucks just can't wait until it's safe to pass and they put others in danger.

By LStoneyAcres |

Take your time and enjoy every turnout and scenic overlook. We drove from Durango to Telluride just to see the colors along this road. Well worth the time!

By texhills |

Drivers have to be alert and attentive on this drive. Beautiful scenery along the way but don’t risk a glance on the winding parts when there’s no guardrail and your passenger is gasping with fright. There are sections where you can appreciate your surroundings. Well worth the drive.

By KimHoo |

Well worth driving for a great view and many places to take pictures- Not while you’re driving though- being as though there are no guardrails!

By Karen W |

We did this drive from Manitou Springs clockwise. It was absolutely gorgeous. The trees were just starting to change colors and the scenery was beautiful. The driving was very scary, treacherous and exhausting. There are so many hairpin turns and no guardrail, not to mention I was having blurry vision that day and was driving a rental car I was not familiar with. I've driven the Pacific Coast Hwy and have done years of driving in Asia, nothing scared me like this did. I would never do it again, but so glad I got to experience it this one time.

By Susanne T |

The day we drove the Million Dollar Hwy, we had everything from dry weather to rain, sleet and snow. It was still absolutely beautiful and we enjoyed all the pull-outs and the (sometimes limited (due to fog or snow)) views.
Please be careful and obey the speed limit; on this road it is there for a reason.
The road is open for all cars and we saw 18-Wheelers, campers, motorhomes and all kinds of cars and motorcycles, so don't worry about what kind of vehicle you are driving.

By Manbyk |

As an avid motorcyclist riding the Million Dollar Highway from Durango to Ouray, Colorado has become an yearly obsession. The best time to visit, early May, avoid Memorial Day & beyond. Choosing to ride my favorite road networks for a third time in three years requires a modicum of planning. I want temps in the 40-70 degree range, clear skies, off tourist season, stunning scenery. I hit all four over Mother's Day weekend. The absence of traffic was stunning. That said, most people stay close to home on Mother's Day, absolutely perfect timing. I will add the stretch from Silverton to Ouray will appear to some "hairy" due to the lack of guardrails, 200 foot drop offs, sharp turns, altitude. For me, everything about it calls me back year after year.

By soonerlegend |

Absolutely beautiful drive! The views are amazing but be careful because not many guard rails along the way. There's several pull outs along the way to stop & take pictures or let faster drivers around. Would definitely recommend. We're seniors and made the drive without any issues.

By J M |

Drove this highway from Durango to Ouray. I an afraid of heights and feel more comfortable with guardrails. No guardrails along this road! One slip and our trip would have been over. We were very fortunate in that there was very little traffic in either direction. Spectacular views. No stopping along the way. Was well worth it to end up In Ouray. Have conquered another fear!!!

By joedvet |

We traveled down the million dollar highway from Ouray to Durango, allowing about two hours with a few stops. Beautiful drive, fairly safe I would say.

By AZBMWgirl |

This is a great ride on a motorcycle for sure! The road is in great condition with lots of twists and turns for your riding enjoyment! Don't miss this drive if you are in the area!

By Buffalodan |

Beautiful weather, we drove it 8;30am from Montrose to Durango and the light on the aspen was spectacular. The color was fullest at the Montrose end right now and greener towards Durango. Go if you can, it is glorious.

By Runningcoach |

It's impossible to describe the views as you drive the Million Dollar Highway from Durango to Silverton and on to Ouray...but just know that they are worth the drive. Plan on pulling out at most, if not all, of the turnouts. Otherwise, as the driver, you are not going to take your eyes off the road with the narrow, winding road. I especially loved the pullout and views from the top of Molas Pass (10,915 feet or 3,326.9 meters). We were fortunate to catch the views when there was a light mist falling throughout the day (thanks hurricane Rosa), which really accentuates the colors of the aspen trees.

By gigity2015 |

Beautiful sites with some very narrow road on the side of high mountains! Have the camera ready so you can say you did it at least once!

By Matt L |

Great views and drive was just fine, few spots you just need to go SLOW😊 View over painters cabin, water falls, rock formations were all very cool!!

By Chesapeake Gal |

This is the most spectacular road I've ever been on. I've driven through the alps and this was even more amazing. However, I will also add, it's the only time in my life I've literally been frozen with fear (fortunately I was a passenger, not driver!) . We were at one particularly treacherous point and a storm suddenly appeared which was not in the forecast. There was hail, lightening, and freezing rain. We finally found a point to pull off and made it through the route to Silverton. It was terrifying, but even the storm was spectacular since we were in the middle of the clouds with the storm surrounding us. Despite this, I recommend that if you are brave and don't have acrophobia, the views are worth it.

By Norma M |

We were traveling from Montrose area over the mountain to Silverton....on a coach bus...following a snow storm...in MAY! l!!! It was probably one of the most exhilarating travel trip we have taken. The scenery was breathtaking. There are no guide rails along the road. We were told so when the snow plows do their magic the snow doesn't build up and can be pushed over the edge.

By Mike F |

Unreal, so cool and loved every part of it. Even got stopped for road work and was fine with it! I wish we were returning through this area but this was a drive I won’t forget! If you ever have the chance, do it!

By Gordon H |

Lovely drive on a. sunny day with amazing scenery at every turn, but not for the faint hearted as there are plenty drop-offs with no crash barriers. Would be quite a thing to attempt this road in snow, ice or heavy rain

By Bruce E |

We drove the route Oct 2, 2024 with perfect weather and had no concerns about safety. We heard reviews and Utube videos about the route being scary which are over blown.. We enjoyed beautiful autumn aspen golden leaves and had plenty of stops to get photos and enjoy the scenery.

By Michael L |

Do not visit Durango without making the drive up to Telluride and vice versa. The drive is beautiful and the mountains are amazing.

By wasmith59 |

My wife and I visited friends in Fraser, and we made a driving tour to include the Million Dollar Highway. It is good to be a passenger! The views are spectacular. This is a MUST DO.

By Mike A |

We live in the Pacific NW and do mountain drives all the time.
This one is different.
With the openness of the area you can see so much breathtaking beauty.
Is the road narrow? Yes.
Is the rock face right next to you at times? Yes
Are there dropoffs to your death? Absolutely!
I would not do this drive pulling a large trailer... but that's me, even though I drive a tractor trailer for a living.
If you don't go you'll regret it, go slow and let traffic pass you when you have a pull off.

By 860SusanB860 |

I had read many of the reviews regarding how dangerous this highway was to drive and almost backed out! I am so glad that I didn't.
The drive was not as bad as some of the things you read. Yes, there are steep drop-offs in places without guard rails. There are also some places with guard rails. There are many highways that have as much risk. As long as you drive the speed limit and have a driver that keeps eyes on the road, you won't have any issues.
We drove up from Ouray to Silverton recently on a beautiful sunny day. The aspens were turning at the higher levels and the scenery was beautiful.
I particularly enjoyed seeing lots of the old mine equipment and shacks left from years gone by.
This is definitely a must-see if in the area!

By Michelle S |

This is a beautiful memorable road. We drove north from Durango to Montrose, stopping in Silverton and taking a side trip around to Telluride after Ouray. There are many places you will want ot stop and take in the views, especially at Molas Pass (the Molas Divide) overlooking the Weminuche Wilderness and the Colorado trail. Also stop at the overlook at Red Mountain (actually 3 red mountains) and the remains of the many mines that were in operation here until 1978.

By Brenda C |

The views are great if you can let go of the vehicle door to hold the camera your better than I was! What an amazing ride...not drive as we might still be there.

Everyone should do this once.

By Davigeta |

This is a beautiful scenic drive down Highway 550 from Ouray to Silverton. We continued on to Durango. There are several waterfalls, none of them mighty in August. The mountains and forest are wonderful.
The road is of normal width, with a small margin on the edge of the north and the south lanes. Though there are no guard rails, IF you follow the speed limits, it appears to be quite safe. My wife and I thought this was a potentially life-threatening trip, so we were much relieved at the end that the danger level was lower than expected. Again, please obey all traffic signs on this route.

By Wayne S |

Rode US 550 in August 2019 on a weekday from Ouray to Durango. Absolutely would do it again. Surprised to see semi’s running aggressively on it but I’m sure they are driven often on that road. Such a scenic ride. Wished we had more time to take in every stop and town. Certainly a bucket list item for sure.

By Susan R |

We traveled this road several times during our Colorado visit. The views are so beautiful have your camera ready! There are historical sight along the way such as old cabins, a mine, etc. you can access a lot of off roads from this highway to explore the backcountry.this is a blacktop toad and easy to drive.. a little more effort needed if driving and RV due to the turns and grades. There is construction betweenSilverton and Ouray so be prepared to stop for the one lane section.

By Bill F |

Great ride from Durango to Ouray Colorado. The ride from Durango to Silverton is easiest part, with Silverton to Ouray being more challenging. If you’re a new MC rider, think about waiting before tackling, as there are a number of tight switchbacks and drop offs.

Always, no matter what time of year, check CDOT for road conditions, as they change quickly, and snow is possible just about any month.

Gorgeous views, and plenty of wild life to see. Can’t miss stretch of highway.

By chasinUpstateNewYork |

It would be easy to take many hours driving this road, as the ever changing views demand to be seen. My friend drove up to Silverton and most of the way back down, which made it easy for me to simply watch constantly.

By sunnyskier |

We drove 9/20/2020 and the name of the highway did not disappoint! Leaves are changing and that made for an even more incredible experience today! The driver will have to pay attention to the road so drive slow so you can glance around!

By CPG3 |

We left the city of Grand Junction, on our way to Farmington, New Mexico. As we drove south, the stunningly beautiful San Juan Mountains loomed in front of us. As we entered them, the vistas were so beautiful that we just had to stop for pictures. eventually we reached the town of Ouray, which is a restored mountain village set between towering snow capped peaks. The town and its surroundings are breathtakingly beautiful. From Ouray to Silver City is a slow drive, but around every corner are more and more vistas that make it difficult not stop on every corner to drink in the beauty. If you are in South Western Colorado, don't miss this drive. It was awesome.

By mojomexia |

Beautiful drive - husband didn’t want it to end. I’m terrified of those narrow roads with no rails. I’m fine on the inside lane. We drove from Silverton to Ouray. They said that it’s not as scary as the other direction. I was surprised there was still lots of snow mid June. Stopped at two Cool waterfalls before Ouray.

By LYEVBA |

Scenery to die for! Rode and rode on a bus tour but never boring, not for one minute. The scenery is breathtaking all the way.

By The wanderer |

The scenery along this drive is spectacular with many switchbacks and curves. Great for the passenger but the driver can't take eyes off the road for a minute for the challenging drive. We entered the drive from Ouray and drove to Silverton for lunch then back again. Beautiful way to spend an afternoon.

By KristinalynRN |

We traveled this highway from Montrose Colorado all the way down to Durango. Please plan on taking your time and enjoying all of the scenic beauty this highway has to offer. There are hairpin turns, sheer cliffs and drop offs, beautiful scenic overlooks, several mountain summits, a couple of old mining structures to see, if you’re lucky a few wild animals, a waterfall, and a hot spring! Be sure your brakes are good and you have plenty of gas in your car and snacks! Bring your camera and hit the road!

By Hans |

The road from Durango to Silverton is beautiful around this time of the year (june) because there is still snow up the slopes and summit. This gives the scenery someting extra.

By Mixa's Travels |

At the Visit Durango - visitor center we got some good insight and guidance on driving the Million Dollar Highway.
First do it! The scenery is spectacular. Go early, allow time for stops along the way. The curviest part is on the way from Silverton to Ouray. Plan 2 hours to go about 60 miles (without stops). Remember cars, trucks and buses drive this road daily. Yes a lot of it doesn’t have guardrails on steep curves.
Don’t drive in rain, snow, sleet and don’t drink alcohol. It is awesome.
Thankfully my husband drove. I navigated and took pictures. Yes, there are some curved sections with minimal shoulders that are steep - straight down and no guardrails that are a bit scary. But again this road is traveled safely on a daily basis. On the way up we stopped at Andrews Lake, Molas Pass, Red Mountain and a waterfall. Since we were taking the train to Silverton we continued on to Ouray, a very quaint and charming town. Seeing dark clouds over the mountains at Ouray, we headed back but still got caught in rain. So little stopping on our return. Thankfully, we eventually drive out of the rain. Hopefully, the pictures give a little feel of the beauty.
Note: The Million Dollar Highway has totally different views and scenery than the Durango Silverton Train. Plus the Highway going to Ouray is very scenic. The train only goes to Silverton. We are glad we did both as it is like experiencing two different worlds of this beautiful scenic area. One of mountains and the other of canyons and the river.

By Nancy M |

This is a beautiful drive. But I must warn you to be extremely cautious and respectful of this drive. This is not a joy ride. It has some seriously dangerous areas that should be carefully driven. We rode on the highway on August 4, 2025 while staying in Ouray. The next day 3 people drove off the highway crashing 300+ feet into the raven and river. Two passengers died and an 11 year girl was life flighted out. She was lucky that another driver saw the incident otherwise she too may have died because no one would have known she was down the raven. Two days after that another car went off the road. They luckily were not seriously injured.

By 2babybluz |

Such an awesomely beautiful place. We have traveled every state in the US and this is one of the most beautiful!! There is SO much history in that gold mining area also!!! You have to drive the Million Dollar Highway it is worth taking the extra time!!!!

By Ron W |

This road should be on everyone's bucket list! It was 37 years ago I drove this for the first time and the scenery is fantastic!

By Lisa S |

Once our side of the road was hugging the mountains I calmed down. The scenery was indescribable! Absolutely loved it.

By D D |

Unbelievable Fall colors and plenty of places to pull off to take photos.
Road is in great shape and a pleasure to drive.

By Five_Aces_Tx |

I've seen all 50 states and I've done a lot of driving on scenic roads and this one is waaaaaay up there! Lots and lots to see but definitely take your time! There are four or five stretches with absolutely no shoulder. I could not imagine pulling a trailer on this route.

By Jim O |

It was a beautiful drive with so many amazing sights. Unfortunately there was still a lot of snow so we were not able to take some of the side roads and see everything we we were hoping to view.

By Dojarani |

This is a must do if you are in the area. Every turn is another beautiful view. There are lots of places to pull over and take pictures. Unfortunately because of all the tight curves and lack of guardrails in some places the driver doesn’t get to see much. Take your time and pull over to enjoy all the scenic overlooks.

By Linda S |

Be forewarned...if you have an aversion to glancing out the window and seeing nothing below for what seems to be miles and miles...take a Valium and sleep thru this drive. Seriously. This is not for the faint of heart. If I had not had complete trust in my husbands driving abilities to get us and a 25 ft argosy thru the million dollar highway, I would still be sitting in Silverton refusing to continue on. If you are fearful of heights, have a pre-drive margarita or 2 (you only...not your driver) and enjoy the beauty of the scenery around you...just don't look down! Here's to arriving safely in Pagosa Springs, Ouray, or wherever hwy 550 takes you...safe travels and remember...don't look down! Lol!

By AnitaJack |

Be sure to pull of road at viewpoints and "take it all in"! We stayed overnight in Durango, then started towards Ouray for our adventure. Stop in Silverton to hike up a short trail to see the Miner's Shrine. A 9 foot marble statue of Christ is there. Walk the historic main street. We found sales on Teva sandals and sweatshirts.

By MiscJMM |

This is a beautiful stretch of highway, but please check the forecast before you embark on your journey. My husband and I totally know better, but did not do so. On May 8th we got caught in a crazy heavy snowstorm about 2 miles north of Silverton and had to drive until we could find a safe place to turn around to head back to Durango. It was a white knuckle trip the entire way back. There was almost no traffic on the highway (others must have seen the forecast), visibility was poor, the road was slushy, and icing up quickly. We finally we got to a lower altitude and it turned to rain. There had been a winter storm warning issued and the forecast called for 10"-12" of snow and high winds. Had we checked, we would not have gone. Like I said, we know better.

By memtninde |

Listen I get it, drive on a highway and see the beautiful scenery. I did it and yea it’s beautiful. But, if you really want to see the area do the alpine loop. Rent you a Jeep or ATV in Silverton and get crackin you wont be disappointed.

By Twindaddy63 |

Keep your eyes on the road! (If you are driving) Very scenic and bookended by two very nice towns. Rent OHV and explore the area.

By Bkbak |

Take your time to enjoy things along the way. Go slow so that you can see the beautiful views and/or wildlife. There are many things to stop and enjoy along the way such as the pull offs at the passes, Yankee Girl Mine, Idarado Mine, waterfalls, hikes, and much more. Enjoy the road; slowly.

By Marlene S |

We have travelled this highway many times. We have driven a car, a class c motor home towing at S, a class A motor home, diesel pusher towing a jeep, and this year A chevy diesel pulling a 35 ft. 5th wheel, pulling an atv trailer. Yep, we pulled triple. You just gotta be careful, safe, smart, but not afraid. It is a good road, (when there is no rock or mud slides) with plenty of width for vehicles to pass. It is very steep and brakes better be good! The view is breath taking! Just sit back and enjoy the ride!

By suegg1822 |

This is a one of a kind drive. Pulling a trailer is tricky. Glad my husband was driving. Really, the views are amazing. Be sure and do it both directions.

By Michelle R |

I have lived in this area for over 40 years and I have traveled the world, The drive from Durango to Silverton stills takes my breath away with the stunning views of the majestic San Juan Mountains. If you're used to flat highway driving, it will take YOUR breath away for another reason....the drop-offs from the side of the road are steep and death defying. This road has gone from donkey trail to an easy drive that provides hairpin turn experiences. Take your time, it's' worth it.
The incredible views from the top of Molas Pass rival any other spectacular scenery you can find. There are many hiking stops available with a little research. A simple walk around the perimeter of tiny little Silverton surrounded by stunning peaks on all sides, is a delightful hike while not venturing far from your car.
You can do a full day loop of the "Scenic Skyway" by driving on through Ouray for more scenic shock. Stop in Telluride for a glamorous lunch and continue over Lizard Head pass down to Dolores. Head through tiny, artsy Mancos and back to Durango.

By staledale |

I thought this drive was stunning. My wife can't stand narrow roads, especially with huge drop-offs and minimal guard rails, so listening to her and watching her react to my driving which was always too close to the edge for her comfort, was difficult. Know your limits before going, but go anyway. It's really not that scary!

By Wyldecamp |

This is truly one of Colorado’s most amazing drives for scenery, history and exhilaration in road trips. Take advantage of the pull outs for stopping to take in the views. There is a historic mining town along the route that you can wander around in but please don’t vandalize or take items from that site. Use your low gears going down hill and don’t burn out your breaks.

By Jim |

This is an amazing stretch of highway, sure to take your breath away! We went during the Leaf Peeping season and the area was beautiful.

By keithpieper |

Towing a small trailer, I didn't think the drive was too bad and certainly was overcome by the best scenery in Colorado. But if you have anxiety over heights, you should probably think twice about the drive. There are small stretches just outside Ouray where the road is crumbling into the canyon below.

By RP-Netherlands |

We drove this road form Ouray to Silverado and it was gorgeous. We stopped a couple of time to take pictures. We have been to Switzerland many times and I can conform that the scenery is exactly the same. The snow capped peaks and grean meadows of the Apline landscape are awesome.

By Patrickbrown108@yahoo.com |

The srate of Colorado evidently doesn’t care about the safety of motorcycle tourism anymore. They are chip and sealing the million dollar highway. Just like they are many other state highways. We rode up from Durango to Ouray today, and the road was treacherous. They were chip snd sealing the road, and there was loose gravel everywhere. It was ridiculously hazardous. I would not recommend anyone riding a motorcycle on this highway until this problem is resolved.
The state brags about all of the income they have gained since the legalization of marijuana. But they are evidently spending a dime of this windfall on roads. There is no way that s stretch of highway that is sonwell traveled by motorcyclists should be chip and sealed ( especially in the middle of riding season). This highway has always been paved with asphalt (like it should be) but all of a sudden they cant afford it? Well evidently the folks in charge if the highways don’t realize the amount of their income that comes from motorcycle tourism.

By Kevin G |

Pulled off many times to see old mining sites rivers and lakes. Weather was perfect. Walked around Silverton for a while a headed back to Ouray great day

By Greenvilledan |

Wonderful drive, incredible scenery, but allow for extra time if you have to be somewhere on time.

The only problem was getting behind a slow driver ( the speed limits are already slow). It is very difficult to pass anyone.

We got caught behind people driving under the speed limits. There would be 10-12 cars creeping behind a slow driver.

The views were unbelievable and well worth the drive.

We drove this highway from north to south. The best views and sharpest drop-offs were on the section closest to Ouray. This road has some very sharp 10 mph curves, and fortunately, the occasional passing lane. However, there weren’t very many places where you could stop and get out to enjoy the views.

We took an extended drive one day, from Durango to Silverton, to Ouray and then on around to Telluride and back to Durango.
These roads afford simple magnificent vistas, with lots of hairpin turns and straight drops off the side of the road, sometimes without barriers.
One of the great scenic drives.
We went in April, but I would love to go again in the fall when to aspens are golden.

Do not miss this! The views are amazing! There are places without guardrails. If you’re afraid of heights, I’d say driving from Silverton to Ouray is better for the passenger. It was not as scary as I anticipated, and totally worth it! The driver really has to keep their eyes on the road, so they will miss some of the sights. 25 miles goes by really fast!

we visit every year from Texas and this is everything the name is cracked up to be!! be ready to be awed!!!!

The color of the aspens was extraordinary. The drive is winding but feels safe. There are lots of turnouts so you can stop & take pictures.

Mission accomplished: drove the million$$ highway and in December! (And I'm from South Texas) First- the views, the scenery, the drive is indescribable. Beautiful & awe inspiring to say the least.
The highway is well maintained. The best part is the final stretch from Silverton to Ouray (and first part returning from Ouray). Slow & steady wins. My wife who is afraid of heights had her side window open throughout the ride. Respect the road, observe speed limits & don't be intimidated by the highway nor those speedsters that have driven this beautiful road a few times.
No 4x4, offroad required for normal conditions. Again, the highway is well maintained & most folks are respectful, driving to enjoy this gorgeous part of Colorado.

The Million Dollar Highway is the stretch of highway between Silverton and Ouray, Colorado, and it is 100% worth the drive! It is beautiful!! The views are spectacular, there are some fun stops along the way, and when you have to spend some time traveling from one destination to another, it makes it so much more enjoyable. Loved it!

We drove through here as part of our drive from Utah to Oklahoma. We had never been here before...and it was truly awesome and beautiful. The views started to amaze as we approached Ouray and continued to amaze all the way through Durango. The road is very windy in parts and usually does not have guardrails. However, it was not particularly scary and the views of the mountain, the valleys, the towns, and the old mining operations were awesome. It would have been dangerous if I tried to take in all the views while driving, so I pulled over frequently to get out of the car, enjoy the views and breath the fresh air. We also took lots of time to enjoy the towns of Ouray and Silverton. They were both quaint and have lots of history. Very nice indeed! I highly recommend this drive if you have the time to really enjoy it. I would note that we made the drive when the weather pleasant and when the skies were blue. There was snow on the mountains but no ice on the roads...if the roads were icy it would have been scary.

If you’re coming in for the north, you probably will travel on U.S 550. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more awe inspiring road in the lower 48. Keep your eyes on the road, obey the speed signs, and you’ll be okay. Happy Trails!

We took advantage of every pull off along the road because the scenery was so awesome! Red Mountain and the many places where people had dug for silver and other minerals just enhanced the view.

Million Dollar Highway is breathtaking, scary but breathtaking. I've driven through this highway at least 5-6 times in different seasons, it's just beautiful!

We drove the beautiful Hwy 550 on 6/22/19 from Montrose, CO to Durango, CO--a little over 100 miles. It took us about 4 1/2 hours, but we made SEVERAL stops to take pictures as well as stopped for lunch at Ouray Brewery. This drive is AMAZING! The further south we drove, the prettier it got! We started our drive with hair pin turns in the mountains. The air was cool and smelled so fresh! The Uncompahgre River and National Forest also surrounded us on our drive. Once we got near Ouray, we started climbing into higher elevation. Ouray is a beautiful little town and was a great stopping point to get something to eat and check out a few souvenir shops. We stopped in the Ouray Brewery and sat outside on the roof top for a bit. While the view was amazing, it got too cold (upper 40's) and windy for us, and then it started raining. So we enjoyed homemade southwest chili and also pretzel bites with beer cheese in the warm indoors! After our little pit stop, we continued traveling south on Hwy 550. We stopped at the "Switzerland of America" look out point and a saw a beautiful view looking back down into the town of Ouray. We saw beautiful waterfalls down the mountains from where the snow was melting. As we climbed higher into the mountain passes, the rain continued. After driving a little higher, we thought it was hailing--until we realized it was sleeting!! Now the hairpin turns were seeming even scarier! Next thing we knew, we were driving in falling snow! (The temperature had now dropped into the 30's.) It was the second day of SUMMER! My advice here would be to be prepared for any type of weather, no matter what time of year it is. We continued our drive through the mountain passes. We made another pit stop in the old western town of Silverton, CO. After that quick pit stop, we continued seeing snow as we climbed up to Coal Bank Pass at over 10,000 ft. The snow was sticking to the trees (looked like Christmas!) and starting to pile up on the ground. This southern girl couldn't have been happier to see all of this snow!!! As we got closer to Durango, we started going down in elevation, and the snow turned to rain. We made another quick pit stop at Pinkerton Hot Springs, a pretty hot spring just off the side of the road on Hwy 550. The warm water felt nice. This drive was so beautiful and such a great memory on our big Southwest road trip.

If you have never been in this area, you will by saying WOW around every corner. So majestic! You will want to photograph everything!

It's the most amazing drive I have ever taken. Going from Ouray to Silverton is a white knuckler at first and unfortunately the driver misses the view because you do not want to take your eyes off of the road. My husband and I have our favorite spot where there is a steam that is hidden and we stop there every time and sit on a rock in the middle of the stream, fill up our water bottles with and enjoy the scenery.

Would recommend taking this drive in the daytime in good weather with a reliable car. Beautiful views, lots of turns and drop offs in remote area.

By lorettam55 |

We started this drive in the small community of Ouray, and drove to Silverton. Words are not adequate to describe the beauty of the scenery, and I wish we could have driven all the way to Durango instead of taking the Narrow Gauge Railroad train.

By angeleyes27 |

We drove 550 from Montrose to Durango. Steep drop offs at places. Unfortunately I was too scared to make stops to get pictures of the views. Keep your eyes on the road. I would have liked to stop at the ghost town stops and overlook for Ouray but I was scared. I saw several tractor trailers driving it. I think heading south is less scary

By smcdaniel |

There are no words to describe. It is absolutely the most beautiful place I've ever seen. Around every corner is something even more incredible. We did the whole loop from Durango clockwise back to Durango. Between Silverton and Ouray is the most awesome. It's a must do.

US 550 is a spur of U.S. Highway 50. The section from Silverton to Ouray is frequently called the 'Million Dollar Highway'.
The Million Dollar Highway stretches for about 25 miles in western Colorado and follows the route of U.S. 550 between Silverton and Ouray.
There are several legends about the origin of the name Million Dollar Highway, including one that claims it cost a million dollars a mile to build in the 1920s, and that its fill dirt contains a million dollars in gold ore. The twelve miles south of Ouray through the Uncompahgre Gorge to the summit of Red Mountain Pass give the highway its name. This stretch through the gorge is challenging and potentially hazardous to drive; it is characterized by steep cliffs, narrow lanes, and a lack of guardrails; the ascent of Red Mountain Pass, elevation 11,018 ft., is marked with a number of hairpin curves used to gain elevation, and again, narrow lanes for traffic, many of which cut directly into the sides of mountains. During this ascent, the remains of the Idarado Mine are visible. There is a pull out and it is safe to stop there to view the remains. Traveling north from Silverton to Ouray allows drivers to hug the inside of curves; travel south from Ouray to Silverton perches drivers on the outside edge of the highway. Large RVs travel in both directions. The highway is open all year, but also subject to closures at any time, due to snow, rain, or landslides. Rain is especially dangerous because it can loosen rocks from above, which will bounce down the mountain and potentially land on one's vehicle.
OK, that's the safety information, which needs to be heeded.
Our experience was exhilarating. We drove from Ouray to Silverton on a sparkly clear autumn morning with fall colors all around us and we had the highway to ourselves. Unless we wished to stop, we were able to maintain a steady comfortable speed. There is another stopping place at Molas Pass, elevation 10,899 ft., with a restroom. Its beautiful there.
When you arrive in Silverton, stop for lunch in one of the historic restaurants in town, or visit some of the gift shops. The entire town is an historical site and depends on tourism. The Durango Silverton Train arrives at about noon and when you drive south, you will follow the tracks, but for the most part, they are not visible.
We surely enjoyed our experience and came to this area just for this drive.

I love to drive on this road. It has beautiful scenery and it can be a challenge as it's a little scary in spots but I love it.

Probably an understatement ... but it is quite the drive. Other reviewers have provided appropriate adjectives.

We spent our Summer 2019 vacation in western and southern Colorado and used the Million Dollar Highway to get from Grand Junction to Cortez. This is an awesome drive. Amazing scenery, high mountain passes, and some nail biting sections all rolled into one beautiful drive. Bring a camera and take photos at the turn outs.

If you are visiting western Colorado, definitely make this route part of the trip. There is so much more to travel than arriving. Make the journey as much a part of the trip as the destination. You will be well rewarded.

Regarding the logistics, if you are driving south, make Ouray your first pit stop and tank up the vehicle. Do the same at Silverton. Your next opportunity for gas, restrooms, and restaurants is Durango. We started a bit late and didn't get to Durango until almost 6:00 PM and the mountain passes start losing daylight earlier than that.

Regardless, plan to make this drive part of your itinerary through Colorado. It is an awesome drive.

Too many views to be missed. If you are driving, pay attention to the road. If you aren't driving, soak it in.

I've driven this three times and I personally feel that going north from Silverton to Ouray is more hair-raising then the opposite direction. I will not go that route again but I have no problems going from Ouray to Silverton. Just my humble opinion ....it is something you can at least do once and I would definitely not drive it in an RV or a big vehicle.

We had a terrific time touring Ouray, Silverton and Durango. Some of the most beautiful views anywhere!

By ColoDream |

we live in the mountains of Colorado in Summit County and have driven over many passes. the pass and road from Silverton to Ouray is the best and scariest of them all. the views are spectacular. there are lots of switchback turns and lots of curves. the road is 2 lane and paved but a narrow 2 lane. the views are unobstructed due to few guardrails. our one friend is afraid of heights and risk and she was very nervous on this ride. i have a motorcycle and would have loved to ride this million dollar highway on it. this is a spectacular Colorado Rocky Mountain highway. would definitely be scary on a snow day.

Route 550, otherwise known as the Million Dollar Highway, Is one of the most beautiful drives in the US. It is about 25 miles long but takes a couple hours to complete. There are very few guard rails and extremely sharp switchbacks. Some of the drop-offs are well over 1000'. Not for the faint of heart. Once you start there is no turning back. The views are great but if you are the driver just keep your eyes on the road. I am a retired truck driver and I was thrilled when I completed the drive. If you want to do this, and I think most people should, follow the speed limit and you will be find, But seriously if you are afraid of heights I would not drive on this road. We had no idea this road was so extreme, my wife closed her eyes for most of the drive. She was not happy with me for taking her on this road. Once the road leveled off she was fine. As long as you are OK with everything I wrote than I would recommend this drive. I am glad we did this but being that I am 70 years old I will never do this again.

Sunny early morning before anyone . 6 am cold and beautiful.started in Taos NM through the SanJuan National Forest ( this road was designed for bikers)
So many Elks and dears on the side of the road grazing 😊
From Durango on up to Silverton get ready for a Biker Eticket (Dysney trill rides) I like to kick ass on the curves and baby it was knee down all the way .
This 550 is just made for bikes !❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

What a drive. Spectacular scenery, good roads (albeit no shoulders at times), great stops for photos. The town of Silverton is pretty cool and rustic. A good reminder of time gone by. The railway ends in town and a good amusement to see the train and tourists. The roads are set up and bust with side by side ATVs so watch crossing the street. This was a quite enjoyable stop. I would do it again as there is no way to take in all the beauty in a single trip.

By pjarider |

I rode this on my motorcycle and it was beautiful. A nice ride from Ouray to Silverton, even though the mudslide had some construction delays it was nice.. Don't miss the water fall overlook on the Ouray side just as you start.

By BrakiWorldTraveler |

We drove this spectacular road in September which I guess is the best time because of amazing Mother Nature fall color palette. We shot probably over a hundred photos along the route stopping often and enjoying fab views.
Million Dollar Hwy stretches only 25 miles from Silverton to Ouray, but we drove it around hour and a half including stops.
I see many write it is dangerous ??!! We didn't have that impression maybe because it was a terrific sunny day. I presume it's harder to drive it in rain, fog or snow, but it's a classic mountain road I drove all over Europe many times. Just be cautious and obey speed limits and you'll be fine.

By Barbara P |

The drive was spectacular but not a little bit stressful. I kept wanting to point out the beautiful sights to my hubby but since he was driving, I really didn't want him taking his eyes off the road either!!!

A beautiful stretch of road between Durango and Silverton. Plan on making many scenic lookout stops. Beautiful views of the San Juan Mountains. And do go to Silverton, a charming colorful town with lots of interesting shops. Talk to the vendors. They each have their stories and happy to share. I met my first Hopi Indian there. Very interesting to learn about the culture. Other than beautiful scenery, there is not much along the route.

This road is in great shape and winds up and down the mountains all the way to Durango. Beautiful scenery!

incredibly beautiful and a bit scary winding rode through the mountains.Absolutely worth driving but avoid if weather is not good.
