Attended child's field trip. Well thought out tours and very educational. Capital Building laid out well and tours provide a wealth of history.

The State Capital is one of the loveliest building in MS. The interior with the different types of marble the elaborate stained glass and the majesty of the rotunda is well worth a visit.

It's being restored, but it is a striking monument and state Capitol, really impressive domed structure with ornate and solid Roman influenced design. Like a mini DC. Worth a visit. The copy liberty bell outside works too.

The rotunda and the house chamber were under construction when we visited in August 2023 so they were filled with scaffolding. Many capitols across the nation seem to be undergoing renovations when we visit. There also happened to be a city-wide power outage when we got there so we toured in the dark. The staff and volunteer tour guides were very nice, and we even got a behind-the-scenes peek at “The Vault” since the senator was not there at the time. I wish our luck would have been a little better for our tour. If you are thinking of going anytime soon, consider calling ahead to see how the construction is coming along.

Although we were only able to tour the outside of the Capitol Buidling because we drove through on a Sunday, we were so impressed with the excellent memorials and buildings.
It inspired us to make a return visit to throughly tour the buidling. It is ladden with history.

We went during the construction and when the legislature was not in session. Hope to see the fruits of labor when construction is complete. Our local senator, Senator Sally Doty, met us and gave the tour and an informative talk.

The House and Senate were in session. While we were waiting for our tour time, we had a couple representatives and a senator stop us in the hall to introduce themselves and take up conversation with us. Later, we spotted them from the balcony during our tour. Built in 1903. Beautiful interior with elegant details. There are 750 light bulbs in the rotunda alone. Free parking lot on High Street.

This is one of the most imnpressive building I have visited. The architecture and interior design is fantastic. It is a must see if you are in Jackson for any reason.

We weren't able to see the inside of the capitol building as it was all locked up. A disappointment as it is a nice looking building.

We arrived at a time right after the time it said tours were leaving, and we did not want to wait another hour.
We then wandered all over the Capitol, going to the visitor's section to look into the House and the Senate. The House Sgt. at Arms was at his post and answered some of our questions such as how seating is done, the number of representatives, etc. There were representatives present, but they were informally visiting and reading. There were only a couple of senators in the Senate chambers at the time. There appeared to be a number of lobbyists in the hallways, along with students visiting.
The choir from Mississippi State University sang a few pieces on the steps leading to the second floor, and we enjoyed hearing them.
We went into the Supreme Court chambers as well which were empty. We do not know if the Court still sits there, as there is a new Judicial Building nearby. There was no one to ask.
The building is a mixture of styles with some lovely art noveau features. It was interesting to see four medallions in the dome--one still of a Confederate officer. We walked around looking at the photos of the House of Representatives by year, especially after the 1960's Civil Rights movement in Mississippi.
We wish they had tours offered more often. We have toured a number of State capitols where the guides take groups more frequentlly. Also, it was difficult to get to the building. We parked on the street but had to go up over 30 steps to get to the building. Not sure if there is another entrance.

The building caught my eye and since there was lots of available parking right there I had to stop and have a look. Great architecture and the grounds are very nice. Out front is a Liberty Bell, which apparently is a reproduction and a Monument to the Mothers of the Confederacy. Worth a visit if you're in the area.

This is definitely worth a visit if you are in Jackson. We were there between guided tours so we did the self tour option. Lots of information sheets are provided so easy to get around and see things. We were able to park easily outside on a 2 hour free parking slot.

While in the area with my wife and daughter for a friend's wedding we decided to visit the state Capitol. We gave ourselves the Sunday afternoon self-guided tour of the grounds for photos and such. The highlight of our visit was my daughters new tradition...licking the Capitol. Haha. I know it's crazy but this is the second state Capitol that she has touched with her tongue. It all started when we took her to Montgomery with a friend and they said "what will we do when we get there?" Jokingly I said "lick the capitol I reckon". Well to make a long and funny story short...they did. Now any time we visit my daughter said she will keep the tradition. On 48 more states and DC to go!

Great, nice Building. Very sad it's occupant is a disgrace. Don't people vote in this state. What a horrible man with his views to run a state in 2017. Vote people.

We had the nicest tour guide. She gave a truly excellent tour of this magnificent building. This is a must see stop in Jackson.

When in Jackson, MS, spend a few hours touring the Capitol, an absolutely beautiful building (listed on the National Register of Historic Places) with its stained glass windows and domes, and sculpted marble. You can tour on your own or take a guided tour. Either tour details the State Capitol’s history, its magnificent architecture, and provides an up-close look inside the chambers of the Senate and House of Representatives. Don't miss this gorgeous structure!

Some capital buildings are better than others. I would put this one somewhere in the middle. What makes the visit to these places frequently is the guide. We had a very personable and knowledgeable one here. Apparently she just works Fridays as she did not want to have to mess with legislatures! I can see that.
Another interesting point with all the controversy going on about the Confederate battle flag is a painting in the rotunda. It is a small one of a Confederate general with the Stars and Bars. Also the Mississippi state flag's canton is the Confederate battle flag. I said something to the guide about the painting and she replied that they were instructed not to discuss the issue. I can see that.
They are currently remodeling the building so it was not in all its glory. I was glad to see that they were taking care of things. Sometimes public buildings do not get the care they deserve.
There is a gift shop, small, but they did have a souvenir magnet for my collection. Hopefully someday I will have 50 such magnets.
All in all, a nice visit.

Went here as part of my birthday trip. So much fun and educational. Interesting facts. Worth the trip!!!

We enjoy visiting state capitols in our travels; in a short time in a capitol we learn a lot about a state’s history, culture, politics and economy, especially when we take a guided tour. So it was for us again at the Mississippi Capitol, thanks to docent Mike, who squired us around the beautiful Beaux Arts building with fascinating facts and anecdotes about the building and the Magnolia State. Well worth the 45-60 minutes it takes.

Loved the personalized Capitol Tour with Bill!
Bill and the staff made our visit from FL to Mississippi a great one. Bill had a fun scavenger hunt for my daughter and was extremely knowledgeable and thorough. Would recommend a visit to the Capitol to any visitors.

The whole dome is currently covered in scaffolding and you cannot currently walk or stand under the dome when you get inside. Despite all that, we still had a very nice free tour of the building conducted by a very knowledgable guide. If you like beaux art architecture and design, you'll love this place.

We visited and self guided as we arrived in between guided tours, this is a very impressive building with exquisite detailing especially the domes. If I went again I would have a guided tour as I am sure you learn a lot more.

My son worked as a page for our local representative and everyone was wonderful to us while we were there. It is easy to park downtown just watch the pot holes.

We had a private tour by a Representative that just happened to be standing by the tour desk when we showed up. Great tour and beautiful building.

Decided to visit a Capitol building..never did before. We were very impressed with this one! The people as you enter were very nice...talked with Jeri...and she showed us a portrait of Robin Williams great grandfather who was a gouvenor! The surroundings were absolutely beautiful! Everyone there was very friendly! Even bought a state Capitol book so that when you visit a state Capitol you can have it stamped! It was fun! A must see if you have time!

We have visited numerous state capitols, and this is very characteristic of the classic design. It was closed on Saturday but we were able to walk around and peek in. It is a very beautiful building right downtown.

The Mississippi capitol is a large well maintained building. We took a self-guided tour as there were lots of school kids touring that day. We saw the old Supreme Court chamber along with the two legislative chambers. You could tell that they are in session as the desks are are full of personal objects. We even saw the Governor in the Senate chamber.
The rotunda is pretty and they have some nice art at the top of the main staircase. Also, each of the legislative chamber have stained glass ceilings, and a little dome of their own. On a sunny day they look good.

Built almost entirely of marble, this building is one of the crown jewels of the Magnolia State. Constructed between 1901-1903, it represents one of the finest examples of Beaux Arts architecture in America, There are 11 different types of marble, numerous special features, and much history in this building, The Capitol attracts visitors from all over the world and has volunteer docents who are happy to show it off.

The Mississippi State Capitol is located in Jackson and has been the home of Mississippi's state legislature since 1903. It is the third capitol building in Jackson. The building, which is in the Beaux-Arts architectural style, was designed to house all branches of the Mississippi state government. The grand rotunda and gold leaf eagle atop the dome are something to be seen. The Hall of Governors is a special treat.
Anyone interested in state history, government or architecture would enjoy visiting this historic site.
Admission is free and you are free to wander around on your own or guided tours are available at 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., or 2:30 p.m. on Monday through Friday. You may book a tour online.

The Capitol building is beautiful just to walk through, but if you take the time (about an hour) to take the self-guided tour you will really appreciate the materials and methods used in the construction of this building. Just the information about the double dome structure and the gold leaf on the eagle is worth the trip.
And, if you are visiting from Tennessee you will really appreciate the use of beautiful Tennessee marble!

We stopped by on a Thursday afternoon right at 5 pm. The guards allowed us to come in and view the inside.
Very interesting and absolutely beautiful. I think buildings like this are a rare gem. They just aren't building landmarks like this anymore. Our goal is to take out children to as many capitols as possible. Maybe they will appreciate it one day!
It's free to go in so why no go???

This is a very attractive capitol with some lovely features. I think I was most impressed by the stained glass windows, which are believed to be Tiffany. They are stunning! The staff there is extremely pleasant, even though tours are not always available. I did a self-guided tour and still had a great time. Parking was also pretty easy to find.

We were shown around this beautiful building by a lovely lady with access to almost all of it - very interesting

We thoroughly enjoyed our free guided tour of the State Capitol. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the building. The State Capitol has fantastic architectural detail throughout. Because we went when the senators and representatives were not in session, we were able to go through the chambers and get a close up look.
Not open on the weekends.
An easy walk from the Governor's Mansion, where we first toured. We were also able to get street parking between the two buildings.

We had a wonderful tour of a beautiful state house. We have been to many and Mississippi is rightfully proud of theirs!
Capital Tour-guide Ms. R. Taylor was a terrific ambassador for the State providing historical and architectural details along with stories we’ll remember!

I am not from the area and decided to visit the Captiol to kill some time. I am glad I did. It is really nice with the architecture, stain glass and marble. They have guided tours but I did not take that, I wanted to look at things at my leisure. I would recommend going with they are not in session, this way you can actually walk into the House and Senate chambers and what was the original supreme court.

We do love a Capitol building and enjoyed a free personal tour from Marco, as we just missed the last official one.
He was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable, taking us in all the chambers of this magnificent building.
Then we met Rep Greg Haney from Gulfport, who spent time with us, amazed that we’d come so far.
Great intro to Jackson and Mississippi.

The Capitol Building is a work of art. The dome, the stained glass, the rotunda, and the House and Senate Chambers are open and glorious. There is a metal detector at the entrance. Outside the main entrance is a huge sculpture of women placed in 1912 by the Daughters of the Confederacy. The Confederate flag is imprinted on the front of this sculpture. You are free to walk around on your own- get a brochure at the tour desk.

Was never on our travel agenda but we ended up in downtown Jackson near the Capitol none the less. We were just going to just take a few pictures from the outside but decided to wander inside. From the security guard to the gift shop woman, everyone was just so friendly. We didn't have time for the organized tour so we walked around the interior on our own. Were able to enter both the House and Senate Chambers and take plenty of pictures. Lots of beautiful stained glass images along the stairways. Wife was impressed with the incredible artisanship that went into the marble and carvings throughout the building.
The women who worked the front entrance gave us walking guides and a small color pamphlet type book on the Capitol building. Everyone in the family was also given a free golden pin in shape of the Capitol Dome. They were very friendly and talkative about who the governor was, some history on the building and even on what to see at the older, original capitol building that was just down the street.
The gift shop had few items to sell, but if you were looking for a perfect postcard or print of Jackson, they sold a 5 x 7 postcard of Jackson that was the best one I'd seen in the entire city. Almost good enough to frame. An Aerial shot of the Capitol with the Jackson skyline in the back. They also sold $3.00 sealed bags of postcards that included the 5 x 7 shot along with a bunch of postcards of the interior of the Capitol Building.
When we returned to Seattle after 30 days on the road, we had received a thank you card from the Capitol staff for taking the time to stop and visit. Not your Xeroxed form letter either. Someone had bought an actual thank you card and handwritten several paragraphs on how nice it was to meet us and hoping we had enjoyed our trip to Atlanta and our other vacation destinations. Talk about going the extra mile in hospitality.
Overall, we found the Capitol and downtown Jackson to be incredibly beautiful and friendly. I would rank it as one of the top 3 (I've only visited 25-26 though) most beautiful Capitol Buildings in America. Definitely worth visiting if ever in the area.

If you're looking for something to do in Jackson, I'd go here. There a free guided tours (not sure how often they leave). We missed the tour, but you are still able to guide yourself through.

Thank you Mr Steve Keller for our fantastic tour. He was so knowledgeable and easy going. We were the only ones on the tour so we where able to take our time. We were there about an hour or more and got to see most everything since no session was going on. The details and craftsmanship is stellar in this capitol. We have toured more capitols than I can count and it is always very enjoyable--this was no different. But I have to say Mr Steve was one of my favorite guides!

Park you car in the church parking lot.
The Capiltol open 24 hrs ! That mean you can come in whenever you want to. It is the beautiful structures. The people are very friendly and helpful.

I took my children to this for a field trip with our homeschool group and not only did they love it and learn I did as well. I would like to go back with my husband and take a little more time. We had a wonderful guide.

There were no group tours due to COVID but we were able to take a self-guided one. All of the workers we encountered were very helpful. Since the legislature was not in session, we were even able to go into the chambers for both the House and Senate. There are beautiful stained and leaded glass windows throughout the building.

We went on a Sunday, so all we saw was the outside. The building is currently under renovation, so it was difficult to see everything.

The free guided tour offered every hour is amazing. The tour guide is a volunteer that is very organized and can answer almost every question. The building itself is magnificent and worth seeing. Luckily, you only need about 45 minutes or so for this visit if you have limited time (like I did).

The capitol (new) offers tours starting at 09:30. The tour guide was knowledgeable. The legislature was in session so we could not take pictures from the senate gallery but could from the house gallery? We even met the governor as he walked by our tour group. Very nice of him to take a minute and shake hands!

Not only is the Mississippi state Capitol beautiful there is a lot of thought put into the self guided tour experience. A pamphlet is available that explains the architectural features and they even give you a classy state Capitol pin.
I parked adjacent to the Capitol for free. State Senators etc park in front of the building. It is from a different age.

It's a nice building to pass by and go into during business hours. The architecture is cool with the pillars and dome. It is worth a quick visit.

I ove to visit old buildings and this is a great building with fun architecture similar to capital building in dc with rotunda, they let us roam around the building and and my daughter 12 loved it.

We were fortunate during our self guided tour of the building to be approached by State Rep Terry Brown who offered to give us a personal tour and insite to a lot of Mississippi history. The building, of course, is georgous. The state of Mississippi is recovering from Hurrican Katrino and, still, the "Northern Agression". Commonly referred to in the north as "The Civil War".

I came for a scheduled tour, as advertised on the State Capitol's website. Brenda gave me an outstanding personal tour of the capitol building. She is very knowledgable about Mississippi history and was a pleasure to learn from. She also recommended that I visited the Mississippi Governor's Mansion which was giving tours that morning as well and I had a great tour there as well. Overall, I can't wait to come back to Jackson, Mississippi!

Very welcome, very nice building both inside and outside.
The guided tour is top, pies The doors were opened to us so we could enjoy to the maximum.

We were looking for an activity to do while beating the summer heat. We were pleasantly surprised with how much we liked the Capitol. It is easily accessible if you pay a couple of dollars to park on the street. A tour guide walked us around the building; pointing out marble fixtures, portraits, and customs. My teens learned a bit of history and really enjoyed looking at the art work and intricate designs of the building. We rode in the manual elevator, which was a new experience for us all.
Everyone we met, from an employee returning to lunch, the security guard, to the tour guide was extremely nice and helpful. Their demeanor really made it a pleasant experience for my family.

This was lovely and photo ops abound. Local pottery and friendly advice in the gift shop. Take the stairs all the way to the top for the best view.

We definitely recommend the tour. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and professional. The building is very well kept and we enjoyed the activity because the legislature was in session. Many interesting facts and features. A great place to put on your list to visit.

My friend and I have visited several state capitol buildings together, and I have visited 27 altogether. The Missisiippi capitol ranks very high on my list. It was designed by the same architect that designed the Library of Congress. The use of both natural and electric light are notable.
A capitol tour guide took my friend and I on a tour by ourselves. He was very knowledgeable about the building and its history. Since the legislature was in session, we were able to go in the galleries and see business being conducted.

We read about the Capitol and Mississippi history on our trip down, so we planned on a quick stop in to stamp our book and take a few photos, but a tour was starting right as we walked in. I'm so glad we stumbled into the tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and a very proud Mississippian. He absolutely brought to life the grandeur of the building. This Capitol is hands down the most beautiful Capitol we've seen yet. Built as electricity was becoming mainstream, there were light bulbs everywhere that lit up the building like a Broadway stage! It was absolutely stunning!!

Visiting this area for the first time we drove right up to the Capital. A guard came out of a shelter and I thought he was going to tell us to leave. We told him we were visiting from Pennsylvania and would like to see the capital building. He directed us to a parking place on the grounds and directed us to a doorway. Once inside we were greeted by two very nice ladies. One offered us a personal tour of the building. It was really worthwhile to learn the history and we also were allowed in the Senate and House chambers which were in session. An altogether remarkable experience that really showed the welcoming attitude of the folks in Mississippi.

It was late when we arrived, but we enjoyed driving around the capitol building. It's very impressive. We come from the capitol city of Missouri.

Really great tour with Bill! His architectural knowledge was exceptional. Really enjoyed learning about the features we take for granted but we're great feats of the time, like the lighting. Also, love the history about how the building was financed, the history of the land and the previous capital building. Really impressed with the quality of the tour. We were there for over an hour and a half and I loved every second of it! Highly recommend a tour with Bill!

We have toured 20 State Capitols so far and this building is one of the most beautiful. The use of marble in carvings, columns, adorning walls, & other creative ways is stunning. There is marble in various colors and textures. The grand staircase is of marble creating a wavy balustrade and the landing looks out facing beautiful stained glass windows. The tour was 1 1/2 hours long and the first time we wished we had taken a self-guided tour. One funny note: When we were touring the House one legislator who happened to be there pointed out the seat that John Grisham filled when he was a representative, writing his first book. I asked him did he mean he wrote it when he was at that desk and he said yes! I checked and he was a representative from 1984 to 1990 and the book was written in that exact time!

We arrived on Sunday so we could not go on a tour but have to say this is a very beautiful building, one of the best we have seen during our tour of the US.

Gorgeous building!! It was not busy or crowded at all the day we went so a great socially distanced activity for the family.

Took a tour with my child's school class. I have to say that this was a plesent exsperiance. The house was in session and all senators and legislators were present. Tours were guided and and students got to spend time observing lawmaking in secsion. Senators and Legislators took time to answer questions and explain the process. Security was tight and the grounds were well kept. My only complaint was the parking around the Capitol. There was public parking all around. After feeding a street meter 2 dollars I was aproched by a state capital police and told I would have to move that all public parking around the capital was reserved for staffers during session. There was no visable sinage in the are to confirm this. There was a small sign below the meter that said T30 I asume that is the taking spot.. I was forced to park 3 block away in a parking lot for the capital, it did provide security which was a plus to the circumstances. I would have given 5 stars if signs were posted and kept me from wasting time and money on parking.

We enjoyed the tour of the State Capitol. Our guide gave a very interesting history of the building of the Capitol, the materials used, and a description of how different areas of the building are used. Her love for history and for the building itself is infectious. Highly recommend the tour.

There was plenty of parking, free entry, friendly tour guides and an interesting story. What more do you need?

Whenever my husband and I travel and we're in a state capitol, we visit the capitol building. Since I've visited several other state capitols, but not my own, we set aside a day to visit and tour several downtown attractions in Jackson. The building is beautiful and our tour guide was very knowledgeable.

There is never a time that you go to see an exhibit, especially a state capitol that it isn't awesome and awe Inspiring.
Get out and go....
Go see this building.

What a fabulous building with very unique architecture. We arrived between tours and an idle guide spotted us and immediately began our tour. Our guide Steve was most informative, friendly and proud to be volunteering at the capital. A dedication to the person who picked the colors for the re painting of this beautiful structure should be erected.

Worth the walk about, marble walls and floor tiling make for a cool walk over about 30 mins with a great dome to look up inside at. Free to get in

We arrived on a quiet week day in September. The lady in front who receives the visitors offered us a tour, just the 2 of us. She really took all her time to take us through the whole building. Magnificent! What a beautiful building with many interesting details and definitely worth the time and visit! We spent about 2 hours in total. Gives you a behind-the-scenes look and feel. I would highly recommend this if you happen to get to Jackson.

We had planned to stay the night - but after getting to the capital - we decided to keep going to our next stop. The city is run down and filled with boarded up storefronts and rough roads. The State Capital building is the only place that still looks likes its been maintained and is free from litter. A beautiful capital building in what looks like it might have been a prosperous city - but not now.

The Mississippi State Capitol is gorgeous! I am taken aback each time I enter the building. As a Mississippian, I am so proud to have the grounds of our capitol building so beautifully manicured and open. Many who are employed at downtown businesses, law firms, and other state buildings use the lunch hour to walk around the capitol, enjoying the fresh air and beauty of the massive azaleas that cover the grounds. Please stop by and visit when you are in the central Mississippi area. The stop is worth your time!

The historic State Capitol Building was an amazing place to tour for a Granny and a 15 and 6 year-old. There is no cost and it was so interesting that they didn't realize it was also educational and a history lesson.
We found free parking across the street from the Capitol and took a photo of the grandkids in front of the building with a replica liberty bell. Note: NO photos or food/drink are allowed inside.
The building is elegant with ornate domed ceilings and beautiful marble and details. A free booklet is available detailing many of the details to look for and construction costs and information..
Access was easy on the lower level and after going thru a metal detector we had the option of a self-guided tour with an information sheet listing the highlights of the building. We rode the elevator to the 4th floor and visited the Senate and House chambers while the legislators were in session. It was hard to understand some of the bills presented as they spoke and moved very quickly. But we did hear one discussion on the Senate floor for a bill to teach CPR in high school, which was passed and relevant to my grandson. We then crossed over to the House chamber to view the process again, and then made sure to note the glass circles in the corridor floors. We proceeded down the grand staircase to view the stained glass panels illuminated buy natural light thru the circles in the floor above us, which the kids thought was pretty cool. We also saw the offices of the house & senate members and walked past the Governor's office, although he is usually across the street in another office. The second floor used to house the Supreme Court, and the first floor was a rotunda and small gift shop. The gift shop gave us free "capitol" pins, an informative coloring book for each child and a MS Tour Guide.
Next time, I'll opt for a guided tour to get more details and have the ability to get questions answered, but it was a gr8 way to spend an hour while in Jackson during Spring break..

A must see if visiting the Capital City. Beautiful rotundas. Tours available. Go when the legislative bodies are in session for a close up look at Southern politics.

Part of a bigger tour of the Southern USA with my wife and another couple. This was about half-way along our journey from Memphis so seemed like a good place to stop. There doesn't appear to be too much in Jackson other than this building and a few other Government facilities. It was a short visit but I'm glad we did it. It's an amazing piece of architecture and very well maintained outside and inside with lots of history attached to it.
When we got there, a tour was in full swing so we had to wait. We chatted to a really nice lady who gave us some details of the building and surrounding area, plus some pins and leaflets. We had a look around on our own before we decided to head off somewhere for lunch. I'm gald we visited and it was a good choice to stop off for a short break. If you don't visit here I'm not sure what else there is to do in Jackson though?

I work for the State of Mississippi as Executive Director for a State Agency, so I spend a LOT of time in our Capitol building. Legislation and appropriation can make for indigestion, but the views inside this magnificent building are incredible. I have often heard parts of the guided tours that are available to the public, and the information is incredibly interesting. If you visit during legislative session, you can sit in the upper level of each chamber and watch the session in progress. You can also visit the “Old Capitol Museum” (down the street) for a great interpretive tour.

We have traveled to a lot of cities across the country and seen a lot of state capitols. The state capitol of Mississippi is also a marvel of architectural design and we loved riding by it and seeing the amazing people working for the state hard at work. We decided not to take the tour due to time restrictions.

This building I'd definitely worth a visit. There is plenty of parking in High St. Good photos can be taken from all sides and tours are held weekdays. We arrived on a Sunday so I can't comment on the tour.

You can spend a hour on a guided tour of the building which is one of the best state capital buildings in the USA

A very beautiful historic site to visit and enjoy solo or with a group. Beautiful artifacts to behold and if available, have an ambassador guide you through for a more amazing experience!

We were the only ones on the 11 am tour and got to ask a lot of questions. The tour guide, an older gentleman (whose name I have unfortunately forgotten) was really nice and had wonderful stories. We really enjoyed our tour. And got some restaurant suggestions too when the tour ended.
Beautiful, detailed architecture.

Renovated front entrance is beautiful. Anyone interested in how government works should go and sit in on a session. “We the people . . . “ should be more informed on what goes on in our legislative bodies.

If you are a lover of stained glass & buldings with beautiful proportions - this is for you!!!Welll worht a visit - you can have a guided tour , or take yourself around with the printed 'self guide'

The State Capitol is so rich in history. The eagle at the top of the dome is so beautiful. There are guided tours and self paced tours, take your pick. It's fun and relaxing just to scroll the grounds. Great staff too.

Road trip! Today we visited the Mississippi State Capitol. A beautiful old building. They do 4 guides tours a day. The tour guide we had was ok, but not very energetic nor did she have a lot of interesting facts or figures about the capital. Worth a visit if you like state Capitols. It contains some beautiful stained glass and nice marble on the upper floors.

My wife and I visit state capitols, and Jackson was our 45th. This is an extremely beautiful building and we both rank it in the top three of the prettiest capitol buildings that we have visited. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and spent a considerable amout of time explaining the unique features of the building. The building is constructed from materials all over the country and features several different styles of columns, including both Greek and Roman. We highly recommend touring the building when you are in Jackson.

Built in 1901-1903, this Beaux Arts style capitol is a must see. The details are striking and the rotunda gorgeous. Be sure to check out the golden on top, facing south.

Presuming you have some time during your day, this beautiful Capitol is best explored on the hour-plus tour that takes you through the history of the state's governors as well as all the building's history and architectural details. I learned a lot and enjoyed my visit.

We have been to many state capitol buildings and were delighted with this one. It's facade is in the restoration stage, but the interiors is just spectacular. Had a wonderful tour guide who took us into all the legislative chambers and pointed out little known facts about the art and architecture. Great for history buffs and non-buffs alike. Try to stop if you're in Jackson. You won't be disappointed!

The MS State Capitol is stunning. There is so much detail in every room and the stained glass windows are beautiful. It is a must see if you are in Jackson.

Beautiful grounds, visited as a child, large great wonders to small eyes....good for little ones to be amazed

We were there on a very quiet day in July, and the capitol employees were very friendly and informative. The architecture is just beautiful with all the stone used throughout the building. A wonderful touch on the fourth floor is the clear tile in the flooring outside the senate and representatives chambers that allows natural light through to the third floor.

Well, some of us think it is a zoo. I refer to it as "The Puzzle Palace" It is worth taking a day of your time to go, visit with your senator or representative, just to let them know you haven't forgotten their promises. They love the attention..
You should also spend some time sitting in the gallery (house and senate) and watching the show. It is pretty interesting, if they are debating a piece of legislation of interest to you. Otherwise, just good theater. I think they should serve popcorn.

There is a huge renovation so we couldn't see much.
The marble looks really nice in the parts where it's not fake.
You can also sense the great history of Mississippi in all the portraits and the small details.

A lot of work was being done on the capitol when we visited and there was scaffolding all around the building. We elected to take the self-guided tour and ventured through the interior of the building on our own. It is a beautiful building on the inside. We have toured other state capitols and found this one to be really impressive.

The building was very beautiful and I took the free tour so I could learn more about it.
Legislation was in session so parking was a little crazy (when not in session you can park along the street) and it was super busy in the building, plus I couldn’t go onto the House and Senate floors (could go into the visitor balcony areas).
They offer 4 free tours a day (9:30am, 11am, 1pm & 2:30pm). And I would recommend taking the tour. If not they’ve got lots of information so you can do a self-guided tour.
Since it’s all free it isn’t a bad way to spend an hour or so!

The Mississippi State Capitol building is a very impressive building. The 1 hour guided tour (several times a day) is well worth your time.

I took my 7 granddaughters to see our beautiful Capitol. We had the best tour guide named Jackie. She was very knowledgable and so kind to my girls. Thank you!

Have been to the State Capitol many times. It is so beautiful! The charm lets you know you are somewhere special and you feel safe because of the security present. The elevator ride is a must, sometimes a person operates the elevator that looks like one from an old movie. The architecture is magnificent!

We went by on a Saturday afternoon so it was closed. The front had major construction being done. I took a photo of it anyway. This beautiful building is a must see.

This building and the supreme court building and others were very historic to me. We did not get to go inside of these buildings but the exterior was nice.

We visited the capitol and tagged along on one of the free tours offered. The design of the building is beautiful, both inside and out. It was very interesting to see inside the chambers where business is actually being conducted.

We got there just in time to do the 1:00 PM tour. Our docent, Mackie, knew so very much about the past history of Mississippi as well as current happenings. She gave a very enjoyable tour and educated our group of six along the way. There was a lot going on there today and the press were all there filming a lengthy interview. I highly recommend visiting the capital building and seeing where our elected officials make the decisions that govern us.

We arrived at 2.45 fully expecting to have missed the 2.30 tour but a lovely lady offered to do a tour for us anyway. She was brilliant- very knowledgeable and friendly. Took us into both the senate and the house and pointed about loads of interesting features. Highly recommend going on one of the tours if you can make it.

Downtown, is pretty cool and friendly. I went to Secretary of State Office and this location is near by. Downtown, people seemed friendly and one person helped with directions to SOS office. Parking is amble, but their is some construction going on around the Capital.

Marble floors and ornate decor the dome is beautiful. Something to be experienced by young and old.

beautifully restored and sparkling inside. it was decorated for xmas so quite cheery. the rotunda and lighting are wonderful. docents in the lobby can tell a lot about the history and architecture of the building. nice bathrooms everywhere!

Spouse and I are visiting all the state capitols and Mississippi is #26 on our quest. This was one of the best tours we've done and I can't recommend it enough!
Entrance is at the north or south sides of the building (not east or west sides), on the ground level. The tour office desk is just off the rotunda at the north entrance. Security isn't too intrusive-standard metal detector and x-ray of bags, but they were polite and professional about it. Thank you!
Our tour was at 9:30am with Steve Kelly and he delighted in showing us around the building and letting us in on some of the more interesting features and also giving us a lesson in Mississippi state government.
At the end of the tour the lovely ladies at the tour desk gave us souvenir stamped cards (great bookmarks if you don't collect them) and a free lapel pin! Southern hospitality at its best. Capitol also has a small but nice gift shop staffed by a woman who is a legend herself-stop in and say hi!

Our volunteer guide, Judy, was truly delightful, providing details about the Beaux Arts style architecture (as grand as the Paris Opera!) along with entertaining historical and contemporary anecdotes. Worth the time/effort to visit...and free parking on High Street is a bonus.

Probably one of the best kept tourist sights. The Capitol is open to the public free of charge. Even at night sometimes if Legislature is in session. It is a beautiful building and yours are provided. Don't miss the beautiful grounds and replica Liberty Bell.

Really pretty building in downtown Jackson. Built in 1903 and modeled after the U.S. Capitol. Knowledgeable and friendly tour guides (45 minutes). Be sure to visit the Old Capitol just down the street also.

If this is not the most beautiful state capitol in the country, it has to be in the top three.
Very interesting guided tour.

We’ve been to almost 40 state capitals and this one is for sure in the top five! The architecture is absolutely stunning and it’s nice to be able to access so many of the spaces. We loved our visit, and they have a very nice information desk with knowledgeable staff.

We visited here while on our scavenger hunt through PuzzlingAdventures that led us through downtown Jackson and to the Capitol. The grounds are simply beautiful and there are several statues and sitting areas all around. A must see if you are interested in history and like visiting capitol buildings!

It looks like the US Capitol in Washington, and is just as nearly breathtaking. You have to guide yourself around, but there are so many things to see that it's not hard.

We have been to many state capitol buildings but will always remember Mississippi as the illuminated one. We noticed the lights upon entry but our attention was drawn to them by tour guide on several occasions. The overall experience of the 30 minute tour gave simple information about structure but also history. Don't miss the old capitol museum as it brought the entire experience of Mississippi's history to life.

Even though there was a lot of scaffolding around the building and some windows were boarded up, this is one of the most beautiful state capitol building we have ever seen. The stained glass windows, the different colors of marble, the acute attention to structural details and the agency of colors all contribute to an exceptional place to visit and the dome ceiling takes your breath away.

We chose the Mississippi Capitol for our sightseeing during our stay in Jackson. Arriving on Monday morning, we were fortunate to get a tour from volunteer, Steve. He did an excellent job of pointing out the history and hidden facts in the building. Do not miss the picture of author John Grisham in the House portraits. The building itself is beautiful and compares favorably with most state capitols that I have seen. I recommend a visit, and a tour, preferably on Monday morning, especially when the legislature is in session. Look for Steve, the guide with the bow tie.

As a Photographer, State Capitol Buildings are one of my favorite subjects. This one didn't disappoint.

Capitol #20 on my wife's bucket list item to visit all 50. Though a smaller Capitol, the building feels grand yet warm and comfortable at the same time. Steve, our tour guide, provided a wealth of information, including an excellent discussion of the transition of the Democrat "Solid South" to the Republican leaning tier we see today.

We learned a lot of things about Mississippi while visiting here.

This has to be the most beautiful state capitol building that I have toured. Very informative tour. Must see while in Jackson.

Beautiful building. Every citizen of a state should visit their capital at least once. Proud to take my children there.

Another historical building where you can go in and sit and watch the government work. You sit in the balcony of the congressional floor and can see how laws are voted on and passed.

The guide for our tour was Pauline, a former history teacher and very interesting guide. She was knowledgeable about every aspect of the Capital and the construction and history. This is a free tour and worth a visit.

I took a guided tour of the Capitol while visiting Jackson for a conference. The tour guide did an excellent job providing a historical overview of the interior and external features of the Capitol building. Great photo opportunities.

We like to tour capital buildings when we are in capital cities. Mississippi's did not disappoint. There are beautiful stained glass windows & lots of pretty marble columns. The lighting is very unique & the rotunda is lovely. We had a great tour guide, Steve, who gave us lots of info & even took our picture in one of the chambers. There is also a nice little gift shop in the building.

If your visiting Mississippi or live there your entire life, you will enjoy this tour thought the State's history. This is a beautiful restored building. The museum covers three floors of the building a is an interesting way to spend a couple if hours. There is a shorten tour suggestion if you don't have a lot if time. If you like history you will enjoy this visit.

This is a beautiful capital building and if you have the time you can take the guided tour to receive a lot of great information.

I stopped into the capitol and the employee at the visitor booth was extremely informative. She told me many interesting facts about the capitol, gave me a map so I could take a self guided tour, and she also offered me information on various other attractions in the area. The capitol is absolutely beautiful! Definitely worth visiting.

We were passing through Mississippi on the way home from a Louisiana trip. We wanted to do one more activity that we couldn't do in Tennessee so we stopped here. The capital is a museum. It offers a lot of history, artifacts and more. There is a tiny gift area that has postcards mostly. The staff is very nice, knowledgeable, and helpful. The only con I can think of is that you have to park at least a block away.

We arrived for the 11 o clock tour, our guide, I think her name was Rachel? Forgive me an age related thing. She was very good informative and helpful. The capital building was first a prison but was badly damaged during the civil war, so it was demolished and t new building was built in two years using three different types of marble, it was also the home of the Supreme Court, but they are now in the justice building. It is well worth a visit if you are in Jackson.

The State Capitol was a lovely building. Our Capitol tour guide was Steve who explained the construction of the building and the Mississippi government. Since they were in session we couldn't go in the chambers but could view both the House and Senate from the galleries. It was a lovely visit.

My wife and visited the Mississippi State Capitol while passing through Jackson. The Mississippi State Capitol is located on High Street between President and West streets in downtown Jackson. The building’s address is 400 High St., Jackson, Mississippi. They offer guided tours which are conducted free of charge by staff and volunteers from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. There is a lot of history behind this State Capitol. The State Capitol is the third capitol building constructed in Jackson. The first building was completed in 1822, and the second building in 1839. The Mississippi State Capitol has been the seat of the state’s government since 1903. The building was located on the site of the old state penitentiary and was designed by Theodore Link, an architect from St. Louis, Missouri.

We were in town so we decided to visit the capitol building. What a pleasant surprise!. entering on the basement level, there are sheets for self guided walking. Each of the four floors have interesting features and activities. Built in the beaux artes style, the interior is beautiful, especially in the chambers. There is also a display explaining how the three domes were constructed. In addition to the structural artwork, we were greeted by so many friendly people. The legislature was in session and we met a representative lunching in the chamber. From the gallery, we had such a nice conversation as he explained the layout of the room. Then, passing by the executive office, a receptionist greeted us and even let us look in the governor's office as he was not there. Such a treat. This whim turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. (admission is free and photos are allowed except in legislative chambers).

While we were in Jackson we walked around the State Capitol and it is a grand building! There were one group of people taking some engagement pics and another group taking graduation pics; a lovely place for both with the Magnolia trees blooming and the grandeur of the building. The bell and bronze statue's are amazing.

We toured the Capitol on our short stay in Jackson. It's a great building. Unfortunately, our guide was not great. Shared very little information. We were put on a tour with a small, very well behaved school group of 5th graders from a nearby magnet school. As a former teacher, I felt badly that the kids were mostly ignored for the first part of the tour and barely heard any of what little the guide shared. It got a bit better at the end of the very brief tour, but I'd say take the self guided tour. The building is definitely worth seeing.

The archives is most impressive. Just about any information you might want on Mississippi and Mississippians can be retrieved there.

Surrounding area is in serious need of help, the area is not a place to walk at night, ok during the day but not so at night. Streets in need of repair and buildings in need or repair, they are trying to rebuild but it will still be years off.

The interior is one of the best, and trust me, I have been to quite a few state Capitols. Great guided tour which was very comprehensive and we even had the chance to meet the speaker of the House! They also gave away free lapel pins.

Be sure and take the guided tour. Our guide was wonderful, knew so much history. We always try to visit state capitals when we are in the area of one and this one was impressive. Not as grand as some but still beautiful in it's own way.

One of the best in Jackson, a well organised, very informative, brilliantly staffed history of Jackson during its splendour and obvious links to the President on the $20 bill

As capitals go, this one is pretty boring for a working capital. We’ve seen several while traveling. It has some high points but nothing interesting. We didn’t go to the old capital museum.

Having toured 35 statehouses, I will attest that Mississippi’s state capitol building is one of the best. Upon entering, after passing through security, look up to see the gorgeous dome; then, look around to drink in the stonework, staircases, and elevators. We were fascinated with the old water fountains. At the tour desk behind the staircase, ask for a tour – the docents are very friendly and informative – we enjoyed a great tour! Not only does the building have a beautiful central dome, each of the legislative chambers has a gorgeous ceiling of its own. This building, built for a million dollars more than 100 years ago, was funded with tax dollars from the railway companies. The beautiful building will continue to serve its state well for many years. Don’t miss the portraits of the former governors – one of them is the great, great-grandfather of actor/comedian Robin Williams. If you tour only one historic site in Jackson, this is the best one.

The building is impressive in its way but better still was the hustle and bustle of a place hard at its political work.
We visited both chambers in session, but found the House easier to relate to, not least because of its far better working sound system. It being during spring break there were many kids there and several had been assigned semi official roles.
Most moving was in he House when a visiting choir performed with gusto to entertain all there.

I went on a guided tour. The guide was personable and knew everything. I got to meet Wilfred, the Assistant Sergeant at Arms for the House of Representatives. He was super cool. The capitol was beautiful.

Really stunning architecture in a place with some great decorations and a lot to see. The Capitol Park is nice as well.

This landmark is worth an hour so stop and stretch your legs, join a tour group, or self-tour this state capitol. So much history included in its story! The rotunda and dome are a masterpiece. The congressional houses are remarkable, beautiful.

We were the only ones on our tour, so got to ask all the questions we wanted. Our guide was great - full of information and very personable. The building itself is a real treasure - all the beautiful domes!

Arrived about 9 on Monday. Parked in church lot to left rear of the capitol.Went through security and was directed to tour desk. Steve conducted 9:30 tour. He was great. Lot of history and building details. Because legislature in session we couldn't go to floor of house and senate but were allowed in galleries. No photos in the chambers. In fact had to leave camera outside with guards. Photos allowed elsewhere. Beautiful stained glass some recently cleaned. I liked the elevator doors. Small gift shop.

Good opportunity to take picutures, beautiful building! Would have loved to see the inside, but were there just overnight.

Historic State Capital building from the outside and inside.
Entrance is under the steps. Worth taking a quick visit.

Enjoyed the building grounds, and the beauty and historic characteristics of the building. Very beautiful.

If you are interest in history then it is a must if you are visiting Jackson, Mississippi. We strolled around the grounds and took pictures of the building on a beautiful spring day. It was Sunday so the building was closed. But when we asked where the closest restroom was, a very nice police officer let us into the building to use the facilities. It was southern hospitality at its best. The building looked beautiful inside. We chatted with the officer for a little bit and he gave us some history. What a gentleman and it gave us a great appreciation for the people of Mississippi.

Admission is free, but you do have to go through metal detectors and security. They offer tours, but i was running short on time so i had to skip this. (Unfortunate because the tour guide was a doll). The capitol building is beautiful - great rotunda and dome. Several monuments outside on the capitol grounds. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the Jackson area.

Nice big grounds to get out of the car and have a walkabout. Lots of trees to keep shade. Liked the Liberty Bell look alike and historical plaques.

The final of our capitol stops on our tour was this classic capitol building located in Jackson, MS. One of the features of this building is you get the opportunity to see both the old and the new buildings as well as the war memorial building all within a short distance of each other. The grounds feature several Civil War monuments and memorials which tell the great history of the state.

This is by far one of the most beautiful capitol buildings we have visited. Absolutely stunning!! The free tour is very informative and our tour guide had lots of information. Take your camera!! We visited on December 30th and parked in the parking lot in front of the capitol (no charge). They are working on the outside of the building but it did not distract from our visit.

Beautiful - stained glass - marble - rotunda is spectacular. Don't miss it!

A great place in Jackson. Free admission, friendly staff, interesting history, and beautiful architecture all in one! The staff told us that Anslem J. McLaurin, the 34th governor of Mississippi, his great-great grandson was Robin Williams! The rotunda is a must stop in the Capitol. You get to visit the Senate and House of Representatives, too. An awesome place while in Jackson.

The Capital is a fascinating place to see. I could walk around the inside and outside for hours, finding great spot to take pictures. I highly recommend stopping by on your travels.

This free tour was an unexpected jewel. So friendly and personable (thank you to Emily at the gift shop for the follow up email !) The building was startling with all the different marbles on show. We were fortunate to visit while summer break was happening, so we had access to all the areas.

Sorry but the whole city is run down and filled with boarded up storefronts and potholes in the road. The State Capital building is the only place that still looks likes its been maintained and is free from liter and despair. If your driving through and want to check out Jackson this is your photo op, stop in front of the building it won't be busy even on a Monday afternoon and you can snap a shot of a magnificent capital building in what used to be a prosperous city.

The Capitol is beautiful. Our guide was so knowledgeable we enjoyed every minute. Although some areas are under renovation, we received a fantastic tour.

I was in the neighborhood, for lunch at the "Two Sister's Kitchen" (recommended) when I stopped to see the capital grounds. It's very impressive from what I could see from the outside. They were having a GMO protest on the steps on the capital, which was entertaining on its own. The entire grounds and the area around it is beautiful with rich history. I would recommend anyone who does visit to get the guided tour though.

The guided tour is free and very interesting; you visit all four floors and can see the court rooms and learn some anecdotes about the senators. The building is beautiful, definitely worth a stop to visit.

Located in the heart of Jackson this Capitol Building is very easy to get to. Close to other attractions so it easy to build a downtown tour around it. Great history and the old capitol is just down the street and fun to compare the two. Worth a visit and good for a family stop.

Jackson has had many ups and downs as a state, and this museum does a wonderful job showing the history of the city through this building.
Extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff add so much to this museum.....and. ..it's free!
I personally enjoined the sections that show the refurbishing and preservation of this massive building.
If you are in the area, there is no reason not to visit. I do wish the rest of downtown gets a much need facelift.

My son, dad and I stopped by the state house on our way through Mississippi as we try to see all of the state houses when we travel through the states. I liked this statehouse because it is easy to get to from the interstate and has plenty of parking for visitors. While it was under some construction while we were there we could still walk up the steps and take plenty of pictures. It is a nice state house with very well-kept grounds and a lot of places to take good pictures. Well worth the visit!!!

Even though I say must visit, only 4 stars because I loved the old Capitol building so much more because of the history to it I guess. This building though is gorgeous. I did not do the tour inside as I had opted for other activities so that may have affected ability to earn 5 stars. I loved the beautiful photos I was able to capture, this building is certainly awesome architecture.

Parking - the H/S spots are for when the house and senate are in session it’s our understanding that you can park in those street sites if they are empty. We are in an oversized vehicle so we stopped and asked the guard for his suggestion on parking and he allowed us to park out front.
Security - as with all Capitol buildings you will be asked to open your purse and step through a metal detector before touring the building.
Grab one of the architectural information booklets and explore the building at your leisure. Some areas will be closed as it is an working government building. If you are participating in the “visit Jackson” passport the stamp is located on the second floor at the visitors’ desk.
We’ve visited a fair amount of Capitols on our travels and if I’m honest I’d say we felt the least welcomed at this location. The guards were kind and walked us through the scans, to the register book and handed us the free booklet. The four women who we wrongly assumed were the visitor guides/helpers knew nothing of the passport stamps or the building and made it very clear we were interrupting their phone time. So when we made it to the second floor and were greeted and welcomed to the Capitol we were delighted. She not only knew what we were talking about with the passport stamps but was excited to tell us more about the building. She turned our whole visit around; so if you feel unwelcome when you visit head on upstairs.
Favorite things to note: since electric lighting was relatively new they went all out with lightbulbs for this Capitol it’s quite impressive. The fourth floor floors are made from glass bricks allowing light to come from above and below.

The capitol building was under renovation when we were there, but there was still plenty that we were able to see. Our docent was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and had lots of great stories to tell about the history of the building. Travelers who tour capitol buildings a lot know pretty much what to expect to see, but there are always some unique features as well. This building was designed with glass pieces in the floors so that sunlight can filter down through the floors. Another fascinating fact is that one of Mississippi's former governors, Anselm J. McLaurin, was the great-grandfather of Robin Williams (whose middle name was McLaurin). Our docent told us that they only learned this after Williams' death when they saw it in a biography. Looking at McLaurin's portrait, the resemblance is unmistakable. He reminded me of Williams playing Teddy Roosevelt in the Night at the Museum movies.
There is much to see in the beautiful architecture and interior decor, including lots of stained glass. Be sure to take some time to tour outside the building, as there are statues and monuments to see.
Tip: be sure to tell your docent if anyone in your party has mobility issues; there is an elevator available.

This capitol building is currently undergoing major renovations but you can still see and appreciate the many beautiful features of this building. We were lucky to tour the building with Pauline who was both very nice and extremely knowledgeable about the building and it's history.

Tour was about 30 minutes long. Beautiful architecture and stained glass windows. The governor portraits on the lower level are interesting to look at. Not a lot of other artwork though. Spent total about an hour with the tour and walking around on our own. Also viewed the Veterans Memorial across the street. At the back entrance is the figurehead of the USS Mississippi, I would recommend seeing that.

We were on a tight travel schedule the day we visited so even though we were there before a tour time we chose to do a self guided tour instead. The tour guides were very friendly and helpful in getting us the proper information sheets and even gave us a brief intro before sending us on our way. Since nothing was in session when we visited we could walk into both house and Senate which was really neat. Lots of old style and lots and lots of electrical lights!

Informative tour of both House and Senate Chambers, Old Supreme Court, Hall of Governors, Rotunda, and stained glass mezzanines. Guided tours given Monday-Friday 4 times per day.

Touring state capitol buildings is a hobby of mine and it was nice adding Mississippi to my list. The staff was very welcoming and gave good information. The stained glass windows are really interesting, as are the multiple types of marble throughout. If in Jackson, I recommend visiting the capitol.

All the squirrels were jumping around the lovely grounds. The building is currently undergoing some roof restoration but it never distracts from the beautiful architecture. The stain glass windows were lovely with the sun hitting them in the afternoon.

Perhaps my favorite functioning state capitol building. The golden dome of the capital stands out from a distance and is just one small part of a beautiful building. There is no fee for the tour. However, I did not do the tour because they are typically done 11, 1, and 2:30. However, I would call in advance to confirm the tour times. I did spend thirty minutes walking around the grounds and toured through it on my own. The rotunda will hold your attention as you will notice several themse running through-Native Americans, Justice is blind, the settlement of Mississippi by white farmers. You can get passes to tour through the galleries of the Senate and House while you are there, but the pictures of senators and reps over the past 30 years is a history lesson all on its own. There is a small gift shop on the lower level of the rear of the building. The grounds do not have a lot of statues, but there is one to the women of the Confederacy which I founds fascinating on the back side of the grounds.

Lovely architecture and some interesting exhibits inside. Enjoyed it.Went on a Friday afternoon - parking wasn't bad and it wasn't very busy.

I visited the Mississippi State capital in March 2024. I intended to take a guided tour, the capital is open Monday through Friday and they offer free guided tours at 9:30, 11:30, 13:00 and 14:30. You can do a self-guided tour as there are lots of information literature for you to pick up, but I always prefer a guided tour. Although I arrived for the 09:30 tour, the person who was meant to be doing the tour wasn’t actually there, so I was waiting in the in the Rotunda for about 15 minutes, until a very kind lady who worked there actually took it upon herself to show show us around herself. She gave us a very detailed tour of the building showing us the Senate chamber, the house chamber, the governors office and giving a lot of information about the architecture and design of the building, I was extremely grateful that she took the time out her day to to show an English tourist around the building! When I visited, the building was bustling and very busy, the politicians working in both of the chambers, and yet you are still allowed to go in and visit. This is a free tour and it always amazes me how open and accessible these political buildings are in the United States.

Jackson is the capitol of Mississippi. While I'm not big on politics, most likely, the reason you are in Jackson other than seeing family has something to do with the capitol. It's an impressive building and gives a sense of what voters across the state view as their state government.

lot of history there on state of MS, from slave time up to today present. very beautiful bldg. tour was great and very education.

Toured the grounds. Pretty building, replica of the Liberty Bell out front, statue commemorating sacrifices of women of the Confederacy.

We visited in the evening, after traveling all day. Did not get to go inside as the hour was late. Grounds are beautiful, still lots to see/read.

Just a wonderful 90 minute tour given by a lovely lady that loves her city and state. We felt very welcomed and informed by the time we departed.

I did the self guided tour - the friendly staff gave me all the information to conduct a great tour on my own - the must see is the decorative class ceilings in the house and senate rooms.

This is a glorious example of the era of Belle Arte architecture. From the beautiful senate and legisslature halls all the way to the elevators it's a treat to see

Easy to walk around and tour the Capitol. The rotunda is beautiful as are the ceilings in the Senate and House rooms.

This an outstanding capitol building. Amazing architecture and the way they use natural lighting is a highlight. Make sure you try to go on the tour with a guide, learn so much more that way and even get to go places that aren't always accessible to individuals. Our guide was amazing.

You can visit it as part of a free tour, or on your own. Opted for the latter. Nice capitol, worth visiting if in the area. Just be warned, it is visited by school groups, so it can get noisy. There were a few when I visited.

The place is under renovation right now. We couldn't find a place to go inside, so we just took serval pictures and left. The building looks ok to me.

I love visiting state capitals and our visit to the Mississippi capital last month did not disappoint. We arrived shortly before closing and were a bit hesitant to go inside, but the security guards and other working in the building couldn't have been any nicer.
The building and the grounds are beautiful and we very much enjoyed our self-guided tour. It's too bad the Mississippi governor is a right wing nut.

We came here behind a high school group and just kind of tagged along on their tour. the tour guide was really enthusiastic and informative. we were able to see the Senate and the House of Representatives' rooms where they sit. The building is pretty. Great experience.

I stopped one hour and walk around inside and outside this magnificent building. It's definitely worth a visit.

We visited the capitol on June 16th. We took the guided tour at 11 am. There are guided tours at 9:30 am, 11 am, 1 pm and 2:30 pm. This was our 14th Capitol we saw and it is a nice one. Do not miss the stained glass in the senate and the house of representatives. In the gift shop you can by a book of the 50 State Capitols. It is signed by the author.

The area for parking had lots of construction and was difficult to get around due to huge trucks. I almost gave up but decided since I was already there give street parking a try. It was really worth it. The tour is free and the building amazing. Beaux Arts style always has lots of stained glass and the Capitol did not disappoint. The docent giving the tour was interesting and clearly loves her job.

We had heard about the book tour and being able to go and meet nearly 100 authors. We toured all the tables and met many authors. It was a sweltering August Day and folks were handing out water, little gifts, and edible treats. The number of books was amazing! Wish I had had my grandkids there. To cool off we went to the capitol and to see where our Representative, Richard Bennett day, as well as others from the coast. The capitol is stunning....gorgeous marble, much stained glass, hardwood bannisters and chairs. The gift shop was cheaper than the books outside! It truly is beautiful!

i liked everything and disliked nothing, and it is a capitol city to be moved too, a place to buy properties for ever the peace was great

The Capital building is a great place to see, it's full of art and people all day. I'm in the building at least 5-10 a month. However when I first visited it. It was breath taking because I had never seen anything like it. Since it's a building were laws are made in Mississippi.
A great time to go would be from Jan- Mar of you want to see laws being made. If not anytime is good. They have someone who will give you a tour for free. Put this on your list.

I climberd the 60 steps in the front of the building with my bum knee only to find out that it was not the entrance..It is under this staircase on the first floor. When you go in, it is like the airport. You have to have all your belongings screened by the Capitol Police. ANd you really can't tour this on your own. They frown on that. The docent will accommodate you in every which way possible so you are not roaming around.
But I rather enjoyed this tour by Steve. He was very knowledgeable about the marble, architecture, Senate and Representative chambers, as well as the Governor's office. IT was built in 1903 and it is an architectural marvel, especially the rotunda and the dome
Going on this forced tour was not really a bad thing..I got to talk to other Southerners like myself..They were from the Mississippi Delta and Tennessee. After the tour, I enjoyed a Mississippi plate of red beans and rice at their little restaurant located in front of the entrance. I was told it was the old carriage House.
This capital is only open on the weekdays and the Cafe is only open during the months that the legislature is in session, usually from January to May!

We had hoped to see both the old and new state capitols, but the old one, now a museum, was closed the day we were there. As it happened, this one is so unique and intriguing that we felt we got the old with the new, because this one was built just when electric lighting came in.
Thus, we have a building with the classic architectural design and embellishment of an older era, coupled with electric light fixtures, and an elegant elevator, things which were not available for many of the earlier capitols we have seen.
Everywhere you look, there is something unique and quite lovely in this building: The pediments of the columns surrounding the central rotunda; the wavy balustrade of the grand staircase; the garlands, and other embellishments of the ceiling of the staircase top landing; and much more.
The Legislature was hurrying to finish its session, so things were going on in both the Senate and House chambers. We were permitted to enter and sit quietly in both chambers.
The staff at the welcome desk were very helpful, and they provided excellent material for our self-guided tour. This is a truly beautiful, classic building, and we recommend it to those who might visit this area.

This was a great stop on our Mississippi tour. The lady who greeted us was extremely helpful and gave us suggestions for other things to see in downtown Jackson. Very beautiful building and great history.

Was very pleased with docent who guided us. Very well informed and obviously happy in his work. A pleasure to speak with and have as our tour guide. A tribute to the Syate Capitol .

I arrived just before 9am and was photographing the wonderful exterior of the building when Steve, the tour guide, approached me and asked if I was looking for a tour. In short order he cleared me thru security and conducted a personal tour of the building. I have visited a number of state capitols but never bothered with the tour before, but Steve got this just right. He showed me the various levels of the building and talked thru some of the portraits and the history and construction of the Capitol. I wouldn't have thought it possible to visit as many areas and was impressed to be able to see the senate and the congress rooms. Overall the tour was about 35 minutes (which was just right for me) and really enjoyable.
The surroundings are great and there is free and metered car parking very close by.
Don't miss it and please remember to leave a donation (the tour is free).

I had a great tour and both the house and senate were in session which was great to see the architecture.
Architecture in the building and attention to detail is Fantastic, wonderful guided tour and a small quaint gift shop

We called ahead and arranged for a private tour, and are glad we did. Our guide did an excellent job explaining the architectural nuances of the building. Don’t know how he got a done, but a turn-of-the-century governor was dynamic in his leadership in getting done for $1,093,000. She also did a great job intertwining Mississippi Constitutional separations as well as some political dynamics.
We are state capitol geeks. We enjoy going to state capitols and getting tours of the capitol buildings. In some respects they are all the same and at the same time all different. If you take the time to plan ahead to arrange a private tour, you’ll get a lot more out of it than just walking in, seeing another dome, and walking out. There’s much to see here if you take the time.

We had been here today. It’s so beautiful inside. Especially you spend extra time to feel the robust architecture! Each and every space has been built with lot of interest and thoughtfulness!!! Heard it has nearly 120 yrs history. It’s well maintained& beautifully decorated for Holidays. Loved it. I have shopped Capitol magnet in the gift shop for memories

My wife and I have toured many state capitols while traveling. Volunteers provide the individual tours for the Mississippi state capital. Our tour guide was excellent. My favorite part of the tour was learning about the history of Mississippi. For a state Capitol, the building is not impressive from the outside. It has some interesting and impressive architectural features on the inside. We highly recommend this tour.

There is parking around the Capitol area a short walk to several downtown sites. I entered via a security checkpoint and being off-hour did a self-guided tour instead of a guided tour. There is a sheet on the table you can take to help with the tour.

We drove in early in the morning on the off chance of being able to get in. There was a lot of scaffolding around the building and some windows were boarded up - not very encouraging, but we found a parking space and walked up to the entrance, through security and straight to visitors desk where 2 ladies welcomed us. We were in time for the 9.30 tour, we were the only ones there! Great tour given by a lovely lady, interesting and informative. This is a beautiful building - well worth a visit, so good we went to visit the old state capitol!

We only got to see the Capitol from the outside. Knowing it was closed on Saturday we were able to park right in front and take pictures. I imagine it is as beautiful inside as it is outside.

The State Capitol is beautiful and the free tour is very interesting. This is not your typical boring tour of a government building.

Step right up and be ready for a friendly face to show and tell you all you want and need to know about this capitol's story. It is being renovated these couple years, but the inside is most beautiful and full of historic and modern information, and is up and running. It is located on gorgeous grounds, surrounded by the state's own magnolia trees. Great outing for all!

I worked at the State Capitol for three years. It is a very beautiful place. Beautiful pictures, awesome interior and exterior. Floors are very beautiful, very spacious. Both chambers are in excellent condition Staff are very professional. Very spacious offices and meeting rooms.

Everyone was so friendly from the security guard to the tour guide Steve. An amazing building with a lot of history. Pulled right up to get parking. The interior was wonderful

It was beautiful in the capital, definitely a must see. The people are super friendly there, they told us all about the capitals history, very interesting.

This building is beautiful and should be what all capitols look like. I loves walking and just taking in the view.

We had a great time at the Mississippi State Capitol and spent about 1 hour there. There is no entrance fee and you can also join a tour if you are interested our you can explore on your own.

The art glass alone makes this a worthy destination. Remarkable architectural features have been masterfully restored. Self-guided tours with a printed guide from the reception desk take you throughout the building, exploring its aesthetically rich elements.

Having some free time while getting ready to fly out of Jackson, I decided to stop here for the free tour. The tour was capably led by a very pleasant retired gentleman, who eagerly shared his love of history and this building. The building itself is beautiful, and I very much enjoyed seeing its architecture and the chambers where the House and Senate meet.

me and my family were impressed with the grounds they were very well maintained. the markings and age of the artifacts were also very interesting.

My wife and I were spending the night in a hotel, passing through to Dallas. I got bored and suggested we go downtown to see how it looked. We "accidently" found the Capitol and I was blown away by how beautiful it was at night. The entire area is full of government building and churches. I was so impressed, we went back the next morning before beginning our trip to Dallas. I highly recommend seeing the Capitol building at night and during the day! You will be impressed with the entire area.

This is a beautiful old State Capitol Building, located in downtown and easily accesssible. The grounds are very well kept and the old trees provide tons of shade. It is so picturesque. Enjoyed time just walking around the entire block.

We always like to see state capitol buildings whenever possible so when traveling from Natchez to Mobile we made a little detour to see Mississippi's state capitol. It so happened to be Christmas Day so touring the state capitol building was not possible,in fact Jackson seemed like a ghost town with very few places open and just a handful of cars on the streets. (....mental note to self: major holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving are not the best time to travel and definitely not sightseeing!) Even so the building itself is modeled after the US Capitol in Washington DC and is quite impressive,a grandiose sight indeed! So if you're in the area check it out, snap a few pictures and if possible try to take a tour of its interior.

While waiting for an appointment time we walked around a bit in the capitol building. Had we had the time we would have taken one of the free guided tours that last about half an hour.
Lots of historic things to see in the building. We recommend it to folk from our state. In particular it would be good for children who are in about the 9th grade through the 12th grade. Younger kids likely would not grasp the historic significance of the building.
Security is almost like at an airport. Be prepared to show your briefcase or purse to the guards, then you will go through a metal detector to get in.

We wandered downtown to see the state capitol building, which was lovely in the early evening sun, just sad that there was scaffolding covering most of the top of it.

THe building was closed when we got there, but we walked around it. Very beautiful!!The stained glass was amazing and the architecture was so neat, also.

Visited the Capitol around 7pm. This area very tranquil. Saw a few people walking this area for exercise. Great access to take pictures up close. Can take pictures of each side of building with ease. Downtown seemed very peaceful and quiet.

One of America’s great state Capitol buildings. Full of history and a brilliant architectural achievement.
If you are in Jackson this is a must stop.
Go enjoy!

Will gave our family a great tour that lasted about an hour, contained interesting history and personal insights.

The "new" capitol, as opposed to the old capitol which is now a museum, was completed in 1903 at a cost of $1,093,641 dollars. This was paid by the Illinois Central Railroad through the back taxes they owed the state. In 2018 dollars the building cost more than $700 million. I do not believe that any state would be willing to spend that much on a public building today. In addition to the cost making the building irreplaceable, many of the skills and materials readily available in the early 1900's are, today, either nonexistent or so rare as to be exorbitant in cost. For instance, the stained glass in the domes was imported from Bohemia/Romania and those glass works no longer exist.
The building is a fine example of Beaux art architecture designed by Theodore Link of St. Louis. It is still in use as the center of Mississippi government. Generally open to the public from about eight to five weekdays, the grounds and exterior are always available.

The Mississippi State Capitol is located downtown Jackson. We visited on a busy and interesting day, since a special session was in progress.
The present building is the third capitol in Jackson and is a beautiful Beaux Arts building, dating from 1903. We opted for a self-guided tour and had some nice supplementary information from the excellent staff.
The impressive Rotunda with the beautiful illumination was a great experience. The grounds too are really worth a visit.

This is a living museum. You can walk through it and see where the history of MS was made. It is a well preserved piece of nostalgia that can be appreciated for years to come.

My wife and I visited the MS State Capital Building on the unusually cold morning (18 F) of Wednesday, January 17, 2018. The Building is undergoing a major renovation and consequently the visitor entry way was not clearly marked and not visible from the street and so consequently we parked on the wrong side of the building.... again it was frigid cold out. Upon entry the Security Personnel were quick, efficient, and very helpful. Tours are normally available but because of the inclement weather they were not being conducted on the day of our visit. However, very nicely printed pamphlets and brochures are readily available and the State workers were all very friendly, helpful, and took the time to welcome us to the State and Capital Building. In addition, my wife had her passport stamped. For lunch we dined at the little cafe on the first first floor located on the outside of the Security check-in point. The food was very good and reasonably priced. Overall it was a very enjoyable visit and we highly recommend it.

The Capitol is beautiful and full of History. It is under construction right now and will probably be until the end of 2015, but you can still tour and enjoy it. Excellent tour guides!

Excellent tour with a great host allows you to see all the key parts with good detail on the buildings history.

We went with my Sister due to her having to do somethings in their and it was a beautiful sight!! So big and the staff was Outstanding!!!

The Mississippi State Capitol is the closest state Capitol building in architectual style to the US Capitol building. Constructed in 1903 and renovated as well as restored to its original beauty on the 1980's, this landmark is worth the time of those who are interested in history as well as an appreciation for architectual styles and special construction techniques. After passing through security screens, stand on the lowest level and look up through the rotunda to the various levels of the building. Enjoy the stained glass scenes of Mississippi life as well as the marble and faux marble columns. Take in the intricate wood work and brass hardware and accents throughout the building. Stroll around the grounds and be sure to take a picture of the guilded gold eagle that has its wings spread atop of the Capitol dome. Allow 1-2 hours to enjoy this landmark.

I haven't written a review in a while due to my busy work schedule, but this deserved to be reviewed. So, I finally made the time. We truly had a fantastic tour of the Mississippi State Capitol Building with Ms. Dorathea Brock. We were the last tour of the day (~2:30 pm) that Wednesday afternoon in October and it was just the four of us with Dorathea. The building, itself, has many beautiful features, which she pointed out and explained to us. She was very knowledgeable about the building, friendly, and well-spoken. We all thoroughly enjoyed our tour! If you like history and/or architecture, I highly recommend stopping for a tour.

We enjoyed touring the Capitol Building. So much great history and interesting facts, as conveyed to us by our wonderful tour guide, Jackie!

Stately building

We were on our way to New Orleans and Florida for the time between Christmas to New Years.
We decided to stop in Jackson, to see the State Capitol and walk around.
It was around 8pm, in winter, so dark, but nice, and also safe.
We parked right next to the building, got out and walked around the South side... it’s a nice building - with golden Federal eagle on the top, flying in landing (or taking off?) north to south; round globe lights at four corners on top of roof. Dome.
Nice, stately.
We captured a few good family photos.
The grounds are nice and surely look even better in daylight.
Thank you, State of Mississippi!!!

We thoroughly enjoyed the tour. The Mississippi legislature was due to convene in the afternoon but the Capital was still fairly quiet before lunch. We had a wonderful guide who knew every answer and was sensitive to my problem with stairs. We have decided to start adding state capital tours to future trips.

Had wanted to see the State Capitol while in Jackson, but when we did go down there, the area didn't appear to be particularly pedestrian friendly, nor did we see any places to park, so we didn't stop.
It is in the midst of being renovated so there is scaffolding, etc.; perhaps when that is done it will be different.

We toured this capitol on our own late on a Wednesday. It is one of the most beautiful we have seen and we have seen 15 or so. Very nice folks. The statue out front of Mothers, Sisters, Wives, and Daughters is especially moving for those who are soldiers or have been soldiers. I hope that Mississippi does not ever forget history.

We did not tour inside, just walked around the grounds to get a closer view. Although the building was undergoing major renovations, we enjoyed the sight. This state capitol had a very deep southern feel reminding us of the Confederate days. The large gold eagle on top of the dome was a unique trademark and it was neat to see one of the Liberty Bell replicas. Would have loved to tour the inside if we had more time!

Very friendly people—I think every one we passed in the hall said hello or in some way acknowledged us, though we were clearly tourists (cameras and all). Some nice decoration and architectural details, but the grounds had almost nothing to recommend them.
The gift shop attendant was very friendly and clearly enjoyed her job. It was fascinating that almost as soon as we returned home, we got a handwritten thank you from her--very, very nice and special!

The inside of the capitol was bustling with activity which added to the experience. One of the first capitol that felt like they were doing something! The interior was beautiful with stained glass windows and original paintings. Some windows were boarded up and it looks like they were doing renovations but it didn't take away the history or beauty of the capitol building.

Enjoy the beautiful tour, decor, and staff. The workers are focused, professional, and friendly.. good old Mississippians.

Visiting the New Capital is an absolute delight. I grew up in Mississippi and lived their until I moved to Birmingham a few years ago. I have been in the Capital building probably a hundred times or more and every single time I am astonished at how truly beautiful this building really is. You can hardly imagine the quality of the material and finishes. If you’re u find yourself in Jackson Mississippi it would certainly be worth the effort to visit the New Capital and even the Old Capital Museum both will leave you smiling just seeing such fine architecture so lovingly maintained.

As with our visit to the Governors mansion. We were taken around by a volunteer who was excellent a real eye opener to politics in the US. A wonderful building and worth your time.

We had a marvelous time at our first book festival on the capital grounds. There were many authors there to sell and autograph there works. Several book publishers had large selections of autographed books available for sale. Several book panels were held in the capital. We busted both the house and senate chambers while we wandered around inside the capital.

Our bucket list contains visiting all of the US state capitol buildings. We were fortunate to have a tour of this building, which was built in the early 1900's. At the time, electric lighting was new, and this gorgeous building highlights that feature. Our guide took us through the building, explaining the history of the capitol, which really came to life. This was truly a southern treat to experience.

We happened by chance in Jackson capital of Mississippi, very pleasant surprise. City to see, Capitol, Governor's house and many beautiful churches.City sile area, clean and tidy.
It was founded by Jackson, who later became president of the United States. In front of the Capitol a large bell cast in Philadelphia. Excellent ce a al Char. They shot part of The help.

I went to the old state capitol first and then was informed there was this one. Both were amazing. I should probably take a class in architecture as I don't know how to describe the "ridge" along the frame of the triangle part of the capitol. It is beautiful!! Of course, a dome and a gold eagle to top it off. While at this capitol I was stopped by a person from the local news and was able to share my story of my bucket list to see ALL State capitols.

This is a great place to visit. Even got my picture taken "presiding" behind the podium in the house! Congenial, knowlegeable tour host. Don't go to the Old Statehouse, its closed! Made me late for the tour but the tour guide took me back over the places I missed. So nice.

The wonderful and knowledgeable volunteers provide a guided tour of this very beautiful building. I enjoyed the history and architecture. I highly recommend this visit.

We first stopped by on a Saturday and the building was closed. We returned on Monday and we lucked out with a personal tour with Steve. He really loves the building and is full of information he presents in a very good manner. The building is a beautiful example of Beaux Arts with lots of stained glass and ornamentation. Old fashioned light bulbs everywhere to make the building very bright. There is restoration work going on but it didn't detract too much. We were able to go on both the House and Senate floors. Overall worth waiting for.

It was my first time in MS, and this was the first attraction I visited. The tour guides told great stories that helped me become familiar with the background of the region's history and aware of different things to see in town. The details of the building are amazingly beautiful and worth walking through and taking a look.

As an Austinite, I thought the Mississippi State Capitol (which I toured inside) and the Governor's Mansion (which I missed the tour of) looked very much like our very nice buildings in Austin (unfortunately along with statues honoring the Confederacy). The capitol is definitely worth a look. Unfortunately, there's not much else to do in downtown Jackson, and it is sad that the city is such a state of disrepair. The old black section of town could have been renovated and turned into a blues and jazz venue, but at present, it is a wreck.

The people were very friendly and the capital was beautiful both inside and out. We also had an easy Time parking
Beautifully maintained, worth a visit
There is no charge to visit the capitol building - where we learned that cities are spelled capital and buildings are spelled capitol. A lovely, enthusiastic woman at the main desk greeted us and gave us some background information. We visited at about 10 am on a weekday, and were the only visitors we noticed while we were there. The building is 3 stories (there is elevator) and there are exhibits throughout and some interactive ones with movie or audio. Very interesting for history buffs and architecture fans.
